I'm, I'm pumped for this. This is our first bit together. Exactly. >>It's gonna be fun. Yes. We have a great guest to kick off with. >>We absolutely do. We're at Supercomputing 2022 today, and very excited to talk to our next guest. We're gonna be talking about data at scale and data that really matters to us joining us. Kelly Gayer, thank you so much for being here and you are with tech. Tell everyone what TAC is. >>Tech is the Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas at Austin. And thank you so much for having me here. >>It is wonderful to have you. Your smile's contagious. And one of the themes that's come up a lot with all of our guests, and we just talked about it, is how good it is to be back in person, how good it is to be around our hardware, community tech. You did some very interesting research during the pandemic. Can you tell us about that? >>I can. I did. So when we realized sort of mid-March, we realized that, that this was really not normal times and the pandemic was statement. Yes. That pandemic was really gonna touch everyone. I think a lot of us at the center and me personally, we dropped everything to plug in and that's what we do. So UT's tagline is what starts here changes the world and tax tagline is powering discoveries that change the world. So we're all about impact, but I plugged in with the research group there at UT Austin, Dr. Lauren Myers, who's an epidemiologist, and just we figured out how to plug in and compute so that we could predict the spread of, of Covid 19. >>And you did that through the use of mobility data, cell phone signals. Tell us more about what exactly you were choreographing. >>Yeah, so that was really interesting. Safe graph during the pandemic made their mobility data. Typically it was used for marketing purposes to know who was going into Walmart. The offenses >>For advertising. >>Absolutely, yeah. They made all of their mobility data available for free to people who were doing research and plugging in trying to understand Covid. 19, I picked that data up and we used it as a proxy for human behavior. So we knew we had some idea, we got weekly mobility updates, but it was really mobility all day long, you know, anonymized. I didn't know who they were by cell phones across the US by census block group or zip code if we wanted to look at it that way. And we could see how people were moving around. We knew what their neighbor, their home neighborhoods were. We knew how they were traveling or not traveling. We knew where people were congregating, and we could get some idea of, of how people were behaving. Were they really, were they really locking down or were they moving in their neighborhoods or were they going outside of their neighborhoods? >>What a, what a fascinating window into our pandemic lives. So now that you were able to do this for this pandemic, as we look forward, what have you learned? How quickly could we forecast? What's the prognosis? >>Yeah, so we, we learned a tremendous amount. I think during the pandemic we were reacting, we were really trying. It was a, it was an interesting time as a scientist, we were reacting to things almost as if the earth was moving underneath us every single day. So it was something new every day. And I've told people since I've, I haven't, I haven't worked that hard since I was a graduate student. So it was really daylight to dark 24 7 for a long period of time because it was so important. And we knew, we, we knew we were, we were being a part of history and affecting something that was gonna make a difference for a really long time. And, and I think what we've learned is that indeed there is a lot of data being collected that we can use for good. We can really understand if we get organized and we get set up, we can use this data as a means of perhaps predicting our next pandemic or our next outbreak of whatever. It is almost like using it as a canary in the coal mine. There's a lot in human behavior we can use, given >>All the politicization of, of this last pandemic, knowing what we know now, making us better prepared in theory for the next one. How confident are you that at least in the US we will respond proactively and, and effectively when the next one comes around? >>Yeah, I mean, that's a, that's a great question and, and I certainly understand why you ask. I think in my experience as a scientist, certainly at tech, the more transparent you are with what you do and the more you explain things. Again, during the pandemic, things were shifting so rapidly we were reacting and doing the best that we could. And I think one thing we did right was we admitted where we felt uncertain. And that's important. You have to really be transparent to the general public. I, I don't know how well people are gonna react. I think if we have time to prepare, to communicate and always be really transparent about it. I think those are three factors that go into really increasing people's trust. >>I think you nailed it. And, and especially during times of chaos and disaster, you don't know who to trust or what to believe. And it sounds like, you know, providing a transparent source of truth is, is so critical. How do you protect the sensitive data that you're working with? I know it's a top priority for you and the team. >>It is, it is. And we, we've adopted the medical mantra, do no harm. So we have, we feel a great responsibility there. There's, you know, two things that you have to really keep in mind when you've got sensitive data. One is the physical protection of it. And so that's, that's governed by rule, federal rules, hipaa, ferpa, whatever, whatever kind of data that you have. So we certainly focus on the physical protection of it, but there's also sort of the ethical protection of it. What, what is the quote? There's lies, damn lies and statistics. >>Yes. Twain. >>Yeah. So you, you really have to be responsible with what you're doing with the data, how you're portraying the results. And again, I think it comes back to transparency is is basically if people are gonna reproduce what I did, I have to be really transparent with what I did. >>I, yeah, I think that's super important. And one of the themes with, with HPC that we've been talking about a lot too is, you know, do people trust ai? Do they trust all the data that's going into these systems? And I love that you just talked about the storytelling aspect of that, because there is a duty, it's not, you can cut data kind of however you want. I mean, I come from marketing background and we can massage it to, to do whatever we want. So in addition to being the deputy director at Tech, you are also the DEI officer. And diversity I know is important to you probably both as an individual, but also in the work that you're doing. Talk to us about that. >>Yeah, I mean, I, I very passionate about diversity, equity and inclusion in a sense of belongingness. I think that's one of the key aspects of it. Core >>Of community too. >>I got a computer science degree back in the eighties. I was akin to a unicorn in a, in an engineering computer science department. And, but I was really lucky in a couple of respects. I had a, I had a father that was into science that told me I could do anything I, I wanted to set my mind to do. So that was my whole life, was really having that support system. >>He was cheers to dad. >>Yeah. Oh yeah. And my mom as well, actually, you know, they were educators. I grew up, you know, in that respect, very, very privileged, but it was still really hard to make it. And I couldn't have told you back in that time why I made it and, and others didn't, why they dropped out. But I made it a mission probably back, gosh, maybe 10, 15 years ago, that I was really gonna do all that I could to change the needle. And it turns out that there are a number of things that you can do grassroots. There are certainly best practices. There are rules and there are things that you really, you know, best practices to follow to make people feel more included in an organization, to feel like they belong it, shared mission. But there are also clever things that you can do with programming to really engage students, to meet people and students where they are interested and where they are engaged. And I think that's what, that's what we've done over, you know, the course of our programming over the course of about maybe since 2016. We have built a lot of programming ATAC that really focuses on that as well, because I'm determined the needle is gonna change before it's all said and done. It just really has to. >>So what, what progress have you made and what goals have you set in this area? >>Yeah, that, that's a great question. So, you know, at first I was a little bit reluctant to set concrete goals because I really didn't know what we could accomplish. I really wasn't sure what grassroots efforts was gonna be able to, you're >>So honest, you can tell how transparent you are with the data as well. That's >>Great. Yeah, I mean, if I really, most of the successful work that I've done is both a scientist and in the education and outreach space is really trust relationships. If I break that trust, I'm done. I'm no longer effective. So yeah, I am really transparent about it. But, but what we did was, you know, the first thing we did was we counted, you know, to the extent that we could, what does the current picture look like? Let's be honest about it. Start where we are. Yep. It was not a pretty picture. I mean, we knew that anecdotally it was not gonna be a great picture, but we put it out there and we leaned into it. We said, this is what it is. We, you know, I hesitated to say we're gonna look 10% better next year because I'm, I'm gonna be honest, I don't always know we're gonna do our best. >>The things that I think we did really well was that we stopped to take time to talk and find out what people were interested in. It's almost like being present and listening. My grandmother had a saying, you have two errors in one mouth for a reason, just respect the ratio. Oh, I love that. Yeah. And I think it's just been building relationships, building trust, really focusing on making a difference, making it a priority. And I think now what we're doing is we've been successful in pockets of people in the center and we are, we are getting everybody on board. There's, there's something everyone can do, >>But the problem you're addressing doesn't begin in college. It begins much, much, that's right. And there's been a lot of talk about STEM education, particularly for girls, how they're pushed out of the system early on. Also for, for people of color. Do you see meaningful progress being made there now after years of, of lip service? >>I do. I do. But it is, again, grassroots. We do have a, a, a researcher who was a former teacher at the center, Carol Fletcher, who is doing research and for CS for all we know that the workforce, so if you work from the current workforce, her projected workforce backwards, we know that digital skills of some kind are gonna be needed. We also know we have a, a, a shortage. There's debate on how large that shortage is, but about roughly about 1 million unmet jobs was projected in 2020. It hasn't gotten a lot better. We can work that problem backwards. So what we do there is a little, like a scatter shot approach. We know that people come in all forms, all shapes, all sizes. They get interested for all different kinds of reasons. We expanded our set of pathways so that we can get them where they can get on to the path all the way back K through 12, that's Carol's work. Rosie Gomez at the center is doing sort of the undergraduate space. We've got Don Hunter that does it, middle school, high school space. So we are working all parts of the problem. I am pretty passionate about what we consider opportunity youth people who never had the opportunity to go to college. Is there a way that we can skill them and get, get them engaged in some aspect and perhaps get them into this workforce. >>I love that you're starting off so young. So give us an example of one of those programs. What are you talking to kindergartners about when it comes to CS education? >>You know, I mean, gaming. Yes. Right. It's what everybody can wrap their head around. So most kids have had some sort of gaming device. You talk in the context, in the context of something they understand. I'm not gonna talk to them about high performance computing. It, it would go right over their heads. And I think, yeah, you know, I, I'll go back to something that you said Paul, about, you know, girls were pushed out. I don't know that girls are being pushed out. I think girls aren't interested and things that are being presented and I think they, I >>Think you're generous. >>Yeah. I mean, I was a young girl and I don't know why I stayed. Well, I do know why I stayed with it because I had a father that saw something in me and I had people at critical points in my life that saw something in me that I didn't see. But I think if we ch, if we change the way we teach it, maybe in your words they don't get pushed out or they, or they won't lose interest. There's, there's some sort of computing in everything we do. Well, >>Absolutely. There's also the bro culture, which begins at a very early >>Age. Yeah, that's a different problem. Yeah. That's just having boys in the classroom. Absolutely. You got >>It. That's a whole nother case. >>That's a whole other thing. >>Last question for you, when we are sitting here, well actually I've got, it's two parter, let's put it that way. Is there a tool or something you wish you could flick a magic wand that would make your job easier? Where you, you know, is there, can you identify the, the linchpin in the DEI challenge? Or is it all still prototyping and iterating to figure out the best fit? >>Yeah, that is a, that's a wonderful question. I can tell you what I get frustrated with is that, that >>Counts >>Is that I, I feel like a lot of people don't fully understand the level of effort and engagement it takes to do something meaningful. The >>Commitment to a program, >>The commitment to a program. Totally agree. It's, there is no one and done. No. And in fact, if I do that, I will lose them forever. They'll be, they will, they will be lost in the space forever. Rather. The engagement is really sort of time intensive. It's relationship intensive, but there's a lot of follow up too. And the, the amount of funding that goes into this space really is not, it, it, it's not equal to the amount of time and effort that it really takes. And I think, you know, I think what you work in this space, you realize that what you gain is, is really more of, it's, it really feels good to make a difference in somebody's life, but it's really hard to do on a shoer budget. So if I could kind of wave a magic wand, yes, I would increase understanding. I would get people to understand that it's all of our responsibility. Yes, everybody is needed to make the difference and I would increase the funding that goes to the programs. >>I think that's awesome, Kelly, thank you for that. You all heard that. More funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Please Paul, thank you for a fantastic interview, Kelly. Atri Basu & Necati Cehreli | Root Cause as a Service - Never dig through logs again
(upbeat music) >> Okay, we're back with Atri Basu who is Cisco's resident philosopher who also holds a master's in computer science. We're going to have to unpack that a little bit. And Necati Cehreli, who's technical lead at Cisco. Welcome, guys. Thanks for coming on theCUBE. >> Happy to be here. >> Thanks a lot. >> All right, let's get into it. We want you to explain how Cisco validated the Zebrium technology and the proof points that you have that it actually works as advertised. So first Atri, first tell us about Cisco TAC. What does Cisco TAC do? >> So TAC is otherwise it's an acronym for Technical Assistance Center, is Cisco's support arm, the support organization. And the risk of sounding like I'm spouting a corporate line. The easiest way to summarize what TAC does is provide world class support to Cisco customers. What that means is we have about 8,000 engineers worldwide and any of our Cisco customers can either go on our web portal or call us to open a support request. And we get about 2.2 million of these support requests a year. And what these support requests are, are essentially the customer will describe something that they need done some networking goal that they have that they want to accomplish. And then it's TACs job to make sure that that goal does get accomplished. Now, it could be something like they're having trouble with an existing network solution and it's not working as expected or it could be that they're integrating with a new solution. They're, you know, upgrading devices maybe there's a hardware failure anything really to do with networking support and, you know the customer's network goals. If they open up a case for testing for help then TACs job is to respond and make sure the customer's, you know questions and requirements are met. About 44% of these support requests are usually trivial and, you know can be solved within a call or within a day. But the rest of TAC cases really involve getting into the network device, looking at logs. It's a very technical role. It's a very technical job. You need to be conversed with network solutions, their designs, protocols, et cetera. >> Wow. So 56% non-trivial. And so I would imagine you spend a lot of time digging through logs. Is that true? Can you quantify that like, you know, every month how much time you spend digging through logs and is that a pain point? >> Yeah, it's interesting you asked that because when we started on this journey to augment our support engineers workflow with Zebrium solution, one of the things that we did was we went out and asked our engineers what their experience was like doing log analysis. And the anecdotal evidence was that on average an engineer will spend three out of their eight hours reviewing logs either online or offline. So what that means is either with the customer live on a WebEx, they're going to be going over logs, network, state information, et cetera or they're going to do it offline where the customer sends them the logs it's attached to a, you know, a service request and they review it and try to figure out what's going on and provide the customer with information. So it's a very large chunk of our day. You know, I said 8,000 plus engineers and so three hours a day that's 24,000 man hours a day spent on log analysis. Now the struggle with logs or analyzing logs is there by out of necessity, logs are very contrite. They try to pack a lot of information in a very little space. And this is for performance reasons, storage reasons, et cetera, but the side effect of that is they're very esoteric. So they're hard to read if you're not conversant if you're not the developer who wrote these logs or you aren't doing code deep dives. And you're looking at where this logs getting printed and things like that, it may not be immediately obvious or even after a little while it may not be obvious what that log line means or how it correlates to whatever problem you're troubleshooting. So it requires tenure. It requires, you know, like I was saying before it requires a lot of knowledge about the protocol what's expected because when you're doing log analysis what you're really looking for is a needle in a haystack. You're looking for that one anomalous event, that single thing that tells you this shouldn't have happened, and this was a problem right. Now doing that kind of anomaly detection requires you to know what is normal. It requires, you know, what the baseline is. And that requires a very in depth understanding of, you know the state changes for that network solution or product. So it requires time to near and expertise to do well. And it takes a lot of time even when you have that kind of expertise. >> Wow. So thank you, Atri. And Necati, that's almost two days a week for a technical resource. That's not inexpensive. So what was Cisco looking for to sort of help with this and how'd you stumble upon Zebrium? >> Yeah, so, we have our internal automation system which has been running more than a decade now. And what happens is when a customer attach log bundle or diagnostic bundle into the service request we take that from the Sr we analyze it and we represent some kind of information. You know, it can be alerts or some tables, some graph, to the engineer, so they can, you know troubleshoot this particular issue. This is an incredible system, but it comes with its own challenges around maintenance to keep it up to date and relevant with Cisco's new products or a new version of a product, new defects, new issues and all kind of things. And when I mean with those challenges are let's say Cisco comes up with a product today. We need to come together with those engineers. We need to figure out how this bundle works, how it's structured out. We need to select individual logs, which are relevant and then start modeling these logs and get some values out of those logs, using PaaS or some rag access to come to a level that we can consume the logs. And then people start writing rules on top of that abstraction. So people can say in this log I'm seeing this value together with this other value in another log, maybe I'm hitting this particular defect. So that's how it works. And if you look at it, the abstraction it can fail the next time. And the next release when the development or engineer decides to change that log line which you write that rag X or we can come up with a new version which we completely change the services or processes then whatever you have wrote needs to be re-written for the new service. And we see that a lot with products, like for instance, WebEx where you have a very short release cycle that things can change maybe the next week with a new release. So whatever you are writing, especially for that abstraction and for those rules are maybe not relevant with that new release. With that being said we have a incredible rule creation process and governance process around it which starts with maybe a defect. And then it takes it to a level where we have an automation in place. But if you look at it, this really ties to human bandwidth. And our engineers are really busy working on you know, customer facing, working on issues daily and sometimes creating news rules or these PaaS are not their biggest priorities so they can be delayed a bit. So we have this delay between a new issue being identified to a level where we have the automation to detect it next time that some customer faces it. So with all these questions and with all challenges in mind we start looking into ways of actually how we can automate these automation. So these things that we are doing manually how we can move it a bit further and automate. And we had actually a couple of things in mind that we were looking for and this being one of them being this has to be product agnostic. Like if Cisco comes up with a product tomorrow I should be able to take it logs without writing, you know, complex regs, PaaS, whatever and deploy it into this system. So it can embrace our logs and make sense of it. And we wanted this platform to be unsupervised. So none of the engineers need to create rules, you know, label logs, this is bad, this is good. Or train the system like which requires a lot of computational power. And the other most important thing for us was we wanted this to be not noisy at all because what happens with noises when your level of false positives really high your engineers start ignoring the good things between that noise. So they start the next time, you know thinking that this thing will not be relevant. So we want something with a lot more less noise. And ultimately we wanted this new platform or new framework to be easily adaptable to our existing workflow. So this is where we started. We start looking into the, you know first of all, internally, if we can build this thing and also start researching it, and we came up to Zebrium actually Larry, one of the co-founders of Zebrium. We came upon his presentation where he clearly explained why this is different, how this works and it immediately clicked in and we said, okay, this is exactly what we were looking for. We dive deeper. We checked the block posts where Zebrium guys really explain everything very clearly there. They're really open about it. And most importantly, there is a button in their system. And so what happens usually with AI ML vendors is they have this button where you fill in your details and a sales guys call you back and you know, explains the system here. They were like, this is our trial system. We believe in the system you can just sign up and try it yourself. And that's what we did. We took one of our Cisco live DNA Center, wireless platforms. We start streaming logs out of it. And then we synthetically, you know, introduce errors like we broke things. And then we realized that Zebrium was really catching the errors perfectly. And on top of that, it was really quiet unless you are really breaking something. And the other thing we realized was during that first trial is Zebrium was actually bringing a lot of context on top of the logs. During those failures, we worked with couple of technical leaders and they said, "Okay if this failure happens I'm expecting this individual log to be there." And we found out with Zebrium apart from that individual log there were a lot of other things which gives a bit more context around the root cause, which was great. And that's where we wanted to take it to the next level. Yeah. >> Okay. So, you know, a couple things to unpack there. I mean, you have the dart board behind you which is kind of interesting, 'cause a lot of times it's like throwing darts at the board to try to figure this stuff out. But to your other point, Cisco actually has some pretty rich tools with AppD and doing observability and you've made acquisitions like thousand eyes. And like you said, I'm presuming you got to eat your own dog food or drink your own champagne. And so you've got to be tools agnostic. And when I first heard about Zebrium, I was like wait a minute. Really? I was kind of skeptical. I've heard this before. You're telling me all I need is plain text and a timestamp. And you got my problem solved. So, and I understand that you guys said, okay let's run a POC. Let's see if we can cut that from, let's say two days a week down to one day, a week. In other words, 50%, let's see if we can automate 50% of the root cause analysis. And so you funded a POC. How did you test it? You put, you know, synthetic, you know errors and problems in there, but how did you test that, it actually works Necati? >> Yeah. So we wanted to take it to the next level which is meaning that we wanted to back test is with existing SaaS. And we decided, you know, we chose four different products from four different verticals, data center security, collaboration, and enterprise networking. And we find out SaaS where the engineer put some kind of log in the resolution summary. So they closed the case. And in the summary of the SR, they put "I identified these log lines and they led me to the root cause" and we ingested those log bundles. And we tried to see if Zebrium can surface that exact same log line in their analysis. So we initially did it with archery ourself and after 50 tests or so we were really happy with the results. I mean, almost most of them we saw the log line that we were looking for but that was not enough. And we brought it of course to our management and they said, "Okay, let's try this with real users" because the log being there is one thing but the engineer reaching to that log is another take. So we wanted to make sure that when we put it in front of our users, our engineers, they can actually come to that log themselves because, you know, we know this platform so we can, you know make searches and find whatever we are looking for but we wanted to do that. So we extended our pilots to some selected engineers and they tested with their own SaaS. Also due some back testing for some SaaS which are closed in the past or recently. And with a sample set of, I guess, close to 200 SaaS we find out like majority of the time, almost 95% of the time the engineer could find the log they were looking for in Zebrium's analysis. >> Yeah. Okay. So you were looking for 50%, you got the 95%. And my understanding is you actually did it with four pretty well known Cisco products, WebEx client, DNA Center Identity services, engine ISE, and then UCS. Unified pursuit. So you use actual real data and that was kind of your proof point, but Atri, so that sounds pretty impressive. And have you put this into production now and what have you found? >> Well, yes, we've launched this with the four products that you mentioned. We're providing our TAC engineers with the ability, whenever a support bundle for that product gets attached to the support request. We are processing it, using sense and then providing that sense analysis to the TAC engineer for their review. >> So are you seeing the results in production? I mean, are you actually able to reclaim that time that people are spending? I mean, it was literally almost two days a week down to you know, a part of a day, is that what you're seeing in production and what are you able to do with that extra time and people getting their weekends back? Are you putting 'em on more strategic tasks? How are you handling that? >> Yeah. So what we're seeing is, and I can tell you from my own personal experience using this tool that troubleshooting any one of the cases, I don't take more than 15 to 20 minutes to go through the Zebrium report. And I know within that time either what the root causes or I know that Zebrium doesn't have the information that I need to solve this particular case. So we've definitely seen, well it's been very hard to measure exactly how much time we've saved per engineer, right? Again, anecdotally, what we've heard from our users is that out of those three hours that they were spending per day, we're definitely able to reclaim at least one of those hours and what even more importantly, you know, what the kind of feedback that we've gotten in terms of I think one statement that really summarizes how Zebrium's impacted our workflow was from one of our users. And they said, "Well, you know, until you provide us with this tool, log analysis was a very black and white affair, but now it's become really colorful." And I mean, if you think about it log analysis is indeed black and white. You're looking at it on a terminal screen where the background is black and the text is white, or you're looking at it as a text where the background is white and the text is black, but what they're really trying to say is there are hardly any visual cues that help you navigate these logs which are so esoteric, so dense, et cetera. But what Zebrium does is it provides a lot of color and context to the whole process. So now you're able to quickly get to, you know using their Word Cloud, using their interactive histogram, using the summaries of every incident. You're very quickly able to summarize what might be happening and what you need to look into. Like, what are the important aspects of this particular log bundle that might be relevant to you? So we've definitely seen that. A really great use case that kind of encapsulates all of this was very early on in our experiment. There was this support request that had been escalated to the business unit or the development team. And the TAC engineer had really, they had an intuition about what was going wrong because of their experience because of, you know the symptoms that they'd seen. They kind of had an idea but they weren't able to convince the development team because they weren't able to find any evidence to back up what they thought was happening. And it was entirely happenstance that I happened to pick up that case and did an analysis using Zebrium. And then I sat down with a TAC engineer and we were very quickly within 15 minutes we were able to get down to the exact sequence of events that highlighted what the customer thought was happening, evidence of what the sorry not the customer what the TAC engineer thought was a root cause. And then we were able to share that evidence with our business unit and, you know redirect their resources so that we could chase down what the problem was. And that that really shows you how that color and context helps in log analysis. >> Interesting. You know, we do a fair amount of work in theCUBE in the RPA space, the robotic process automation and the narrative in the press when our RPA first started taking off was, oh, it's, you know machines replacing humans, or we're going to lose jobs. And what actually happened was people were just eliminating mundane tasks and the employees actually very happy about it. But what my question to you is was there ever a reticence amongst your team? Like, oh, wow, I'm going to lose my job if the machine's going to replace me or have you found that people were excited about this and what's been the reaction amongst the team? >> Well, I think, you know, every automation and AI project has that immediate gut reaction of you're automating away our jobs and so forth. And there is initially there's a little bit of reticence but I mean, it's like you said once you start using the tool, you realize that it's not your job, that's getting automated away. It's just that your job's becoming a little easier to do and it's faster and more efficient. And you're able to get more done in less time. That's really what we're trying to accomplish here. At the end of the day, Zebrium will identify these incidents. They'll do the correlation, et cetera. But if you don't understand what you're reading then that information's useless to you. So you need the human you need the network expert to actually look at these incidents, but what we are able to skin away or get rid of is all of is all the fat that's involved in our process like without having to download the bundle, which, you know when it's many gigabytes in size and now we're working from home with the pandemic and everything, you're, you know pulling massive amounts of logs from the corporate network onto your local device that takes time and then opening it up, loading it in a text editor that takes time. All of these things are we're trying to get rid of. And instead we're trying to make it easier and quicker for you to find what you're looking for. So it's like you said, you take away the mundane you take away the difficulties and the slog but you don't really take away the work the work still needs to be done. >> Yeah, great. Dec 16th Keynote Analysis with Jeremy Burton | AWS re:Invent 2020

Um, and if you're watching this live on the platform tomorrow, Thursday at two o'clock Andy Jassy, we'll be live here on the cube with one-on-one with me to address all the hard questions, but here we're doing a day two of week three analysis with Jeremy Burton industry legend entrepreneur. Now the CEO of observe Inc, um, formerly the CMO of Dell technologies before that EMC has done a variety of ventures, seeing many ways of innovation, friend of the cube. Jeremy, thank you for coming on. >>Yeah, my pleasure. Great. Always great to be on the cube. >>Uh, great to have you on in particularly because, um, yesterday Verner, Vogel's talked a lot about observability and I noticed you got your observed shirt on, uh, observe Inc is your company's name, which is one of the many, uh, hot startups around observability, where you're making a business out of basically what he talked about yesterday. Um, and today's keynote. You had the extended cloud, uh, edge applications. You had bill Vass who leads up both edge and quantum. And then you had Rudy Valdez who, who talked a lot about, uh, evolution of cloud architecture. And of course you finally had, um, David Richardson, who is the VP of serverless. So you got edge. Quantum serverless architecture speaks to the sea change, Jeremy, and you have a good read on these big waves. When you look at serverless and then quantum, you look at, uh, edge, which is data, and you look at, um, all this coming together and on their architecture, Verner's keynote yesterday kind of makes sense. It's a systems architecture and this new observability trend, isn't like a point product. It's a broader concepts. You have a complete rethinking of distributed computing in the cloud. This is kinda what this Amazon feels like. What's your, what's your take? >>Yeah, it's a, it's a good observation. You know, the, the, the, the sort of punchline is, is that people are building applications differently. Um, so the, the, the, the, the technologies that people are using to build apps are different, um, the way in which they build applications is different. Um, the way folks released codes into production is different, and it stands to reason. Therefore, you're going to need a different approach, uh, when you want to troubleshoot these applications. So, uh, when you find, uh, you know, w w what is show when you want to find out what issues customers are having? So what, what we fell a couple of three years ago when we started to observe was that, um, uh, a new approach was required, what you're going to need to monitor your application. And, you know, 2020 is not the same as what you needed in 2015 or 2010. >>And we felt very strongly that this new wave was, was going to be called observability. It, it brings a tear to my eye to hear a Verner, talk about it, because as much as we observe, you know, believe that we can do big things in future. It's the big vendors today that can move markets. And so the Amazon and vulnerable particular talk about observability, I think it lends more credence to the topic. Um, we think that organizations should have observability teams. We think there should be a head of observability. And again, you know, Amazon and Dawson this, uh, I think means that there's a much stronger chance that that's going to happen. And they're going to start, start to shine a light on, I think, a topic that almost everybody needs to pay attention to as they build their next generation of applications. >>When you guys, I know you guys are launched and you have couple of campaign customers now and growing rapidly, um, well-funded, um, uh, get some great investors have found that the investors of snowflake also, um, invested in you guys. So they see this cloud trend LC snowflake when public, and I know you're on the board of snowflake as well. So, uh, you, you, you know, a little bit about what's going on with Amazon and the opportunity when you look at observability, okay, you're building a business around it. And again, you think about head of observability. That's not like a small thing when you make, put someone in charge of something. So why do you say that? I mean, what, I mean, you know, some would say, you know, Hey, it's a feature, not a company. I mean, this is two mindsets that are different. How do you address that? >>Yeah, the, the, the, the thing I'd say is, look, the number one job in America is, um, is a software engineer is writing code. The number two job is fixing it. And so, you know, th th the job think about that for a second. The job of fixing our applications is almost as big as the job of creating our applications. Uh, something has to change, right? I know the job of fixing cars is not as big as the auto industry. Why, because over time that industry has matured and there are better tools to diagnose cars. Uh, and so they're, they, they become easy to fix over time. We've, we've not made that leap with our applications. Um, the tools that the engineering team use to debug and troubleshoot their application are often still very different to what the dev ops team is using, um, which is very different to what maybe the SRE team is using. >>And so it's a huge problem in our industry. Um, really not being able to diagnose troubleshoot issues when they arise. It, it costs the industry, a fortune, it costs, you know, sort of in indirect wasted productivity of development teams, but it also costs in terms of customer experience. Um, I mean, you know, you and I both know is, look, if we're, if we're having a bad experience with maybe a new service that we're trying out online, w w we're probably going to go somewhere else. And so the there's never been like a more important time for people to invest in observing the entire environment, the entire customer experience, not only will you have happier customers, you might actually reduce the costs and improve the productivity in your engineering team as well. So I feel like the opportunity there is, is, is, is, is vast. Um, I also think longer term, um, it doesn't just apply to troubleshooting distributed applications. >>Um, I think the security systems are very related to the way we build software. Um, I mean, I think in, in, in the news in recent days, we've, we've come attuned, uh, uh, to, to software defects, um, or malware in software causing breaches and government agencies. Um, Hey, that, that could be anybody's software right there. Yeah. And so security has got a role to play in observability and the customer experience. It doesn't stop when they have a bad experience on the website. What if they complain? You know, what if a help desk ticket get, how do you track that? >>Yeah, I'm going to, I have a lot of questions for chassis tomorrow. One of them I'm going to ask him, and I want to get your thoughts on it. Cause you brought that up. And I think it's a key point, you know, building applications and supporting them and fixing them. It kind of reminds me of the old adage of, um, you know, you know, you gotta run it running the operation, 70% of the budget using to running it. If you look at what's happening and if you talk to customers and this is what I'm going to ask chassis tomorrow, Verner actually talked about, I on day two operations in his keynote. Yeah. I mean, this is Amazon they're, they're targeting builders. And so I talked to, um, a few other entrepreneurs, um, who were growing companies and some CIA CIOs and CEOs and the basic enterprises. >>They don't want to be building things like they, that's not their DNA. They don't build things like, that's not what they do. I mean, first of all, I love the builder mentality and with Amazon. Um, but they might be at a time where there might not be enough builders, Jeremy right out there. So you've got skill shortages and then ultimately are enterprises really builders. Yeah. They'll build something, but then they just run it it's. So, so at what point do they stop building or they build their own thing in the cloud and then they got to run it. So I think Amazon is going to shift quickly to day two operations, get bill, bill, bill run, run, run. >>Yeah. That's a great topic of conversation. I think what you sort of poking out is, is sort of the maturation of this digital age in the state that we're at. Um, I mean, if you, if you go back, you, you know, to, you know, 10, 10, 20 years, um, I mean, look at the mid nineties, um, there were a lot of people building custom applications, right? I mean, you know, it was innovation, it was all about building custom apps. And I think that golden era of application development whack that now, um, and, and customers in order to get competitive advantage, they are building their own applications. When you talk about digital transformation, what does that mean? Well, it means, you know, often a traditional company building a new digital experience for services that they've potentially offered in a physical way, uh, in the past. So make no mistake, P people are builders or they are writing code, they are becoming digital. >>I think what you'll find at some point as the industry's mature, some of these digital experience is become packaged. And so you can buy those off the shelf. And so there's less building required. But I think as we sit today, um, that there's probably more code been written in anger by more organizations that at any point in the last 30 years. And, and I think this is another reason why observability is so important, um, as you're building that code and as you're developing that customer experience, you want to be able to understand, um, where the issues are and, and, um, uh, like along the way, you don't want to wait until there's a, a big customer disaster on the day of you roll that, something to production before you start investigate. And you want to do that as you go. >>Yeah. And I think that's a kill. I do agree with you, by the way. I think the, there is a builder mentality, but it's probably right. But remember those days back in it, if you want to put our, our time machine hat on and go through the time machine is, you know, that was during the mainframe client server transition. And it was called spaghetti code. You know, it's like the monoliths were built and then it had to be supported and that became legacy. So I kind of see that happening today, where, um, people are moving to the cloud, they are building, but at some point you got to build your thing in the cloud. If I'm a company. And again, this isn't some dots trying to connect in real time. I got serverless, which is totally cool. I'm gonna have quantum has headroom for compute. >>I'm going to have, um, kind of a S a SOA service oriented architecture with web services, with observability. I'm gonna have all these modern apps great that, or run them. And I'm now I'm gonna shift them. Multiple clouds is so, you know, maybe the private cloud waves coming back, you're seeing telco clouds. You start to see these new tier. I won't say tier two clouds, but I mean, people will build their own cloud environment. There's no doubt as going to the cloud. And Steve Malania, Aviatrix kind of made this point yesterday in his analysis where he's like, he thinks private cloud will be back. I was just, it'll just be public cloud. People will build their own clouds and run them. >>Yeah. I feel well, what happens over time is, is the, the sort of line above which you would add value rises. So I kind of feel like, look, cloud is just going to the infrastructure. We can debate, you know, private cloud, public cloud. Is it a public cloud, or is it a private cloud served up by a public cloud provider? My view is, is look, all of that is, is, um, just going to be commodity, right? Um, it's going to be served up for an ever decreasing cost. And so then it's incumbent on organizations to innovate above that line. And, you know, 20 years ago, you know, we, we built our own data centers. Um, and now increasingly that, that seeming like a crazy idea. Um, and you know, now you can get almost all of your infrastructure from the cloud. The great thing is, I mean, look at observe. >>We have no people running data center operations, none, right? We have no people building a database, non, you know, we use snowflake in the cloud. It runs on AWS. We have, we have one dev ops, uh, engineer. And so all the people in the company right now, we're focused on adding value, helping people understand and analyze data, uh, above that line. And we just pay for a service level and, and look, uh, as time goes by, there's going to be more and more services and that line's going to rise. And so, you know, what, what I care about and what I think a lot of CEOs care about is are most of my resources innovating above that sort of value creation line, um, because that's what people are going to pay for in our business. And I think that's, what's going to represent you, you know, sort of value add for you, you know, organizations big and small. >>Yeah. That's a good point. I want to shift to the next topic and then we'll get into some observability questions I have for you and update on your company. Um, complexity has been a big theme. That's come out of all the conversations with analysts that have come on the cube, as you hear it with Amazon, a lot of undifferentiated, heavy lifting, being extracted away to your point about value layers and competing on value. Amazon continues to do that all great stuff, but some are saying, and we had said on the cube, yes, two days ago you put them complexity behind the curtain. It's still complexity, right? So, so complexity with the edge is highlighted. Uh, even though they got green, uh, I, um, edge core Greengrass, which has core thing, IOT core, a lot of cool things happening, but it's still not yet super easy. So complexity tends to slow things down became striction, what's your view on this? Because taming, the complexity seems to be a post COVID pandemic mandate for cloud journeys. What's your thing. >>Yeah, I totally agree. I think, I think in certainly you look organizations that have been in existence, but you know, 30, 40 years, or maybe even 10 years look at there's an amount of technical debt and complexity that you build up over time. Um, but even newer companies, um, the way that people are building modern distributed applications and in some respects is, is more complex than in days gone by, you know, microservices. Um, some of which maybe you own some of which maybe you don't, and what you've gotta be able to do is, is see the big picture, you know, w w when, when there's something in my code, but then when am I making a call out to maybe a third party microservice and, and that microservices bailing out on me, like people have got to see the big picture. And I think what hasn't been available as people have changed the architecture and their applications, there hasn't been an equivalent set of innovation or evolution in the tools that they use to manage that environment. And so you, you, you, you've got this sort of dichotomy of, uh, a better way for software developers to write code and deploy it into production microservices. But at the same time, you don't have good information and good tools to make sense of that complexity. >>That's great stuff. Jeremy Burton is here. He's the CEO of observe Inc cube, alumni, VIP cube alumni, by the way, has been on the cube every year, since the Q has been around 2010, when he took the new job as the CMO of EMC prior to being bought by Dell, Jeremy, you're a legend in the industry, certainly on as an executive and a marketer. And as an entrepreneur, um, I gotta ask you observe Inc, your company now, um, you're right in the middle of all this, you, you got a big bet going on. Could you share, in your opinion, your words, what is the big bet that you're making with observing? Uh, what are you betting on? How do you see the preferred future unfolding and where are you guys going to capture that value? >>Yes, I I'll big bat. Hey, uh, really is to take a new approach, um, in, in, in, in terms of enabling people to observe their systems, that the term observability actually goes back, uh, to a guy in control systems theory in the sixties. And then it's got quite a simple definition, which is, you know, being able to determine the, uh, I've been able to diagnose a system by the telemetry data that it emits. So let's look at the external outputs. And then based on that, can I determine the internal state of the application? And so from the get-go, we felt like observability was not about building another tool, right? We're not, you know, it's not about building another monitoring tool, a logging tool. Um, it's about analyzing data. And I, I was struck many years ago. Uh, I spent a bit of time with, with Andy McAfee, uh, from the sea sail lab at MIT. >>And he made a statement that I thought at the time was quite profound, which he said, look, everything's a matter of data. If you have enough data, you can solve any problem. And that stuck with me for a long time. And, um, you know, observe really what we do is we ingest vast quantities of telemetry data. We treat everything as events and we try and make sense of it. And the economics of the infrastructure now is such, that is you truly can ingest all the Alltel telemetry data and it's affordable, right? I mean, one of the wonderful things that Amazon has done is they've brought you, you know, very cheap, affordable storage. You can ingest all your data and keep it forever. Um, but, but now can you make sense of it? Well, you know, compute is pretty cheap these days and you've got amazing processing engines like snowflake. >>And so I was sense was that if we could allow folks to ingest all of this telemetry data process, that data and help people easily analyze that data, then they could find almost any problem that existed, uh, in their applications or in their infrastructure. So we really set out to create a data company, which I think is fundamentally different to, to really what everybody else is doing. And today we're troubleshooting distributed applications, but I think in future, we, my hope is that we can, we can help people analyze almost anything around their applications or infrastructure. >>And what's the use case problem statement that you're entering the market on? Is it just making sure microservices can be deployed as a Kubernetes? Is it managing containers? Is there a specific, um, customer adoption use case that you're focused on right now? >>Yeah, we've tried to target our ideal customer if you like has been the three or 4,000, uh, uh, SAS companies. Uh, we're, we're really focused on the U S right now, but three to 5,000 SAS companies, um, predominantly, uh, obviously running on AWS often, uh, Kubernetes infrastructure, but, you know, people who, uh, having a hard time, uh, understanding the complexity of the application that they've created, and they're having a hard time understanding, uh, the experience that their customers are having and tracking that back to root cause. So, you know, really helping those SAS companies troubleshoot their applications and having a better customer experience that's where the early customers are. And if we can do a good job in that area, I think we can, you know, over time, you know, start to take on some of the bigger companies and maybe some of the more established companies that are moving in this, this digital direction. >>Jeremy, thanks for sharing that. And I got one last set of questions for you around the industry, but before I get there, give a quick plug for observe. What are you guys looking to do hire, I mean, give a quick, uh, a PSA on what's going on with observed. >>Yeah, so we're, uh, the company is now what a rough and tough. About three years old, we got about 40 people. Uh we're well-funded by sort of Hill ventures. Uh, they were the original investors in, in snowflake. Um, and, um, yeah, I mean, we we've, we've well, more than doubled in size since the COVID lockdown began. We had about 15 people when that began. We've got almost 40 now. Um, and I would anticipate in the next year we're, we're probably going to double in size again, but, um, yeah, really the core focus in the company is, is understanding and analyzing vast quantities of data. And so anybody who is interested in, uh, that space look us up >>Mainly any areas, obviously engineering and the other areas okay. >>Near in all over. I mean, we, you know, w w w as you'll see, if you go to observing.com, we've got a pretty slick front end. Uh, we invested very early on in design and UX design. So we believe that you are, can be a differentiator. So we've got some amazing engineers on the front end. Uh, so going to can always do with the help there, but obviously, um, you know, there's a data processing platform here as well. Um, we, uh, we do run on top of snowflake. We, we do have a number of folks here who are very familiar, uh, you know, with the snowflake database and, and how to write efficiency equals. So, so front and backend. Um, we very soon, I think we'll be starting to expand the sales team. Um, we're really starting to get our initial set of customers and the feedback loop rule in rolling into engineering. And my hope would be, you know, probably early part of next year, we re we really start to nail the product market fit. Um, and we've got a huge release coming in the early part of next year where that the metrics and alerting functionality will be in the product. So, yeah, it's, it's sort of all systems go right now. >>Congratulations. Love to see the entrepreneurial journey. We'll keep an eye out for you and you're in a hot space. So we'll be riding, you'll be riding that wave, uh, question for you on the, um, just kind of the industry, uh, you're in the heart of Silicon Valley. Like I am honestly, I'm fellow Alto, you're up in the Hillsborough area. Um, I think you're in Hillsborough, right? That's where you, where you live. Um, San Francisco, the Valley, the pandemic pretty hard hit right now. People are sheltering in place, but still a lot of activity. Um, what are you hearing in, um, in, in the VC circles, startup circles, as everyone looks at coming out of the pandemic and you look at Amazon and you look at what snowflake has done. I mean, snowflake was built on top of Amazon competing against Redshift. Um, okay. They were hugely successful at doing that. So there's kind of this new playbook emerging. What are, what are people talking about? What's the scuttlebutt. >>Yeah. I mean, clearly TAC has done very well throughout what has been, you know, like just a terrible environment. Um, I think both kind of socially and economically, and I think what's going on in the stock market right now is probably not reflective of the, of the economic situation. And I think a lot of the indices are dominated by tech companies. So you, if you're not careful, you can get a little bit of a false read. Um, but look, what is undisputed is, is that the world is going to become more digital, more tech centric than, than less. Um, so I think there is a very, very bright future, you know, for tech, um, that there is certainly plenty of VC money, um, available. Um, you know, that is not really changed materially in the last year. Um, so if you have a good idea, if you're on one of these major trends, I think that there is a very good chance that you can get the company funded. >>Um, and you know, our, our expectation is that, you know, next year, obviously industries are going to return to work that have been dominant maybe for the last six, nine months. And so some parts of the economy should pick up again, but I would also tell you, I think certain, uh, sort of habits are not going to die. I mean, I think more things are going to be done online and we've gotten used to that way of working and, and you know, what, not, some of it is measurable. I don't know about cocktails over zoom, but working with customers, um, in some respects is easier because they're not traveling, we're not traveling. So we both have more time. Uh, it's sometimes easy to get meetings with people that you would never get. Now. Now, can you do an efficient sales process, education proof of concept? You know, those processes maybe have to grow up a little bit to be taken online, but I think the certain parts of the last, maybe six to nine months that we don't want to throw away and go back to the way we were doing it, because I think, you know, maybe this way of doing it is, is more efficient. >>What do you think about the, uh, entrepreneurial journeys out there? Obviously, um, Amazon we're here covering re-invent is really kind of, you know, building a massive compute engine. They've got higher level services and, you know, I've been speculating for years. I think snowflake is the first kind of big sign. That points to kind of what I said five years ago, which is there's going to be an opportunity for these other clouds as specialty clouds. I called them might be the wrong word, but snowflake basically built on top of Amazon, you know, most valuable company ever on wall street, uh, IPO on someone else's cloud. So is that a playbook? I mean, is that a move? I mean, this is kind of like a new thing. >>Yeah. I mean, that's, I mean, I, I feel like on databases, I've got a lot of history on management, Oracle almost 10 years. And you know, what snowflake does they did was they, they rearchitected the database explicitly for the cloud. I mean, you can run Oracle on the cloud, but, but it, but it doesn't do things the way that snowflake does it. Right. I mean, snowflake uses commodity storage. It uses S3 it's elastic. And so when you're not using it, you're not paying it. And these things sound very simple and very obvious now, which is I think what, what, what the genius of the founders, you know, Ben Warren and Tre, uh, work, and, and I think there will be other costs, you know, categories of infrastructure that will get rearchitected and reinvented for the cloud. And, you know, I've got equally big opportunities. Um, and so, yeah, I mean, I think the model, I believe firmly that the model is if you're a startup, you don't need to waste a lot of time, like reinventing the wheel on data center, infrastructure and databases, and a lot of the services that you would use to construct an application. >>You, you, you can start, you know, if, if the building that you're trying to build is like 12 floors, you can start at the eighth or ninth floor. Um, you know, I've, I've got like what three or 400 quality engineers at snowflake that are building our database. I don't, I don't need to do that. I can just piggyback on top of what they've done and add value. And, you know, the, the, the beautiful thing, you know, now, if you're a business out there thinking of, of, of, of becoming digital and reinventing yourself, or you're a startup just getting going, there's a lot of stuff you just don't have to build anymore. You just don't even have to think about it. >>Yeah. This is the new program of bull internet. It's internet, truly 2.0 or 3.0, whatever 4.0, a complete reset of online. And I think the pandemic, as you pointed out on many cube interviews and Andy Jassy send his keynote is on full display right now. And I think the smart money and smart entrepreneurs are going to see the opportunities. Okay. >>Yeah. It comes back to ideas and a great, I mean, I've always been a product person. Um, but look at great idea, a great product idea and a great product idea that, that capitalizes on the big trends in the industry. I think there's always going to be funding for those kinds of things. I don't know a lot about the consumer world I've always worked in, in B2B, but, um, you know, the kind of things that you're going to be able to do in future. I mean, think about it. If storage is essentially free and compute is essentially free. Just imagine what you could do, right. Jeremy, >>This is the new consumer. Get out. Let's understand that. Finally, B2B is the new consumer enterprise is hot. I was, again, it was riffing on this all week. All the things going on in enterprise is complex is now the new consumers now all connected. It's all one thing. The consumerization of it, the condition of computing has happened. It's going on. So you're a leader. Thank you for coming on. And, you know, 2020 is not the same as what you needed in 2015 or 2010. And again, you know, Amazon and Dawson I mean, what, I mean, you know, some would say, you know, Hey, it's a feature, not a company. it. And so, you know, th th the job think about that for a second. And so the there's never been like a more important time for people to invest in observing the You know, what if a help desk ticket get, how do you track that? It kind of reminds me of the old adage of, um, you know, you know, you gotta run it running the operation, I mean, first of all, I love the builder mentality and with Amazon. I think what you sort of poking out is, is sort of the maturation on the day of you roll that, something to production before you start investigate. you know, that was during the mainframe client server transition. Multiple clouds is so, you know, maybe the private cloud waves coming Um, and you know, now you can get almost all of your infrastructure from the cloud. And so, you know, what, what I care about and what I think a lot of CEOs care about is that have come on the cube, as you hear it with Amazon, a lot of undifferentiated, heavy lifting, is see the big picture, you know, w w when, when there's something in my code, And as an entrepreneur, um, I gotta ask you observe Inc, which is, you know, being able to determine the, uh, I've been able to diagnose a system And the economics of the infrastructure now is such, that is you truly can ingest all the Alltel And so I was sense was that if we could allow folks to ingest all of this telemetry data job in that area, I think we can, you know, over time, you know, start to take on some of the bigger companies And I got one last set of questions for you around the industry, And so anybody who is interested in, I mean, we, you know, w w w as you'll see, if you go to observing.com, Um, what are you hearing in, um, in, in the VC circles, Um, you know, that is not really Um, and you know, our, our expectation is that, you know, They've got higher level services and, you know, I've been speculating for years. Welcome to the Q Virtual Oh, >>thank you for having me. It's great to be here. >>So you have a really interesting background that I wanted to share with our audience. You were the first see so in the history of U. S presidential campaigns with Mayor Pete, you were also branch shape of Threat intelligence at the executive office of the President. Tell us something about about your background is so interesting. >>Uh, yeah, those and I'm a gonna Def con and I teach lock picking for funds. Ease working for Mayor Pete A. C. So the campaign was really, really unique opportunity and I'm glad I did it. I'm hoping that, you know, on both sides of the aisle, no matter what your political preference, people realize that security and campaigns can only be married together. That was an incredible experience and worked with Mayor P. And I learned so much about how campaigns work and just the overall political process. And then previous to that being at the White House and a threat intelligence, role of branch chief they're working over the last election, the 2016 election. I think I learned probably more than any one person wants Thio about elections over that time. So, you know, I'm just a security nerd. That kind of fell into those things. And and and here I am and really, really, really just fortunate to have had those experiences. >>Your phone and your email must have been blowing up the last couple of weeks in the wake of the US presidential election, where the word fraud has brought up many times everyday. But election security. When I saw that you were the first, see so for Pete Buddha Judge, that was so recent, I thought, Really, Why? Why are they just now getting folks like yourself? And you are a self described a cybersecurity nerd? Why are they Why were they just recently starting to catch on to this? >>I think it's, uh like security on the campaign and security anywhere else on credit to the Buddha Judge campaign. There is no federal or mandate or anything like that that says your campaign has toe have a security person at the head of it or any standards to implement those security. So you know that the Buddha Judge campaign kind of leaned into it. We wanna be secure. We saw everything that happened in 2016. We don't want that to be us. And I think Mawr campaigns are getting on that plane. Definitely. You know, you saw recently, uh, Trump's campaign, Biden's campaign. They all had a lot of security folks in, and I think it's the normal. Now people realize how important security is. Uh, not only a political campaign, but I guess the political process overall, >>absolutely. We've seen the rise of cyber attacks and threats and threat vectors this year alone, Ransomware occurring. Everyone attack every 11 seconds or so I was reading recently. So give me an other view of what the biggest threats are right now. >>Two elections and I think the election process in general. You know, like I said, I'm just a security nerd. I've just got a weird background and done some really unique things. Eso I always attack the problems like I'm a security nerd and it comes down to, you know that that triumvirate, the people process and technology people need had to have faith in the process. Faith in the technology. You need to have a a clear source to get their information from the process. To me, I think this year, more than previous elections highlighted the lack of a federal uniforms standard for federal elections. State the state. We have different, different standards, and that kind of leads to confusion with people because, hey, my friend in Washington did it this way. But I'm in Texas and we do it this way. And I think that that standard would help a lot in the faith in the system. And then the last part of that. The technology, uh, you know, voting machines campaigns like I mentioned about campaigns. There's nothing that says a campaign has toe have a security person or a security program, and I think those are the kind of standards for, you know, just voting machines. Um, that needs to be a standard across the board. That's uniforms, so people will will have more faith because It's not different from state to state, and it's a uniformed process. >>E think whole country could have benefited from or uniformed processes in 2020. But one of the things that I like I did my first male and fellow this year always loved going and having that in person voting experience and putting on my sticker. And this year I thought in California we got all of our But there was this massive rise in mainland ballots. I mean, think about that and security in terms of getting the public's confidence. What are some of the things that you saw that you think needs to be uniforms going forward >>again? I think it goes back to when When you look at, you know, you voted by mail and I voted absentee and your ballot was due by this date. Um, you know where I live? Voting absentee. It's Dubai. This state needs we received by the state. Andi, I think this year really highlighted the differences between the states, and I'm hoping that election security and again everyone has done a super fantastic job. Um, sister has done incredible. If you're all their efforts for the working with election officials, secretaries of states on both sides of the aisle. It's an incredible work, and I hope it continues. I think the big problem election security is you know, the election is over, so we don't care again until 2022 or 2024. And I think putting something like a federalized standard, whether it be technology or process putting that in place now so that we're not talking about this in two or four years. I'm hoping that moment, um, continues, >>what would your recommendation be from building security programs to culture and awareness? How would you advise that they start? >>So, uh, one of the things that when I was on the Buddha Judge campaign, you know, like I said, we was the first person to do security for a campaign. And a lot of the staffers didn't quite have the background of professional background of work with security person. No, you know why? What I was doing there Eso my hallmark was You know, I'm trying to build a culture heavy on the cult. Um, you got to get people to buy in. I think this year when you look at what What Krebs and siesta and where the team over there have done is really find a way to tell us. Security story and every facet of the election, whether it be the machines themselves, the transporting the votes, counting the votes, how that information gets out to people websites I started like rumor control, which were were amazing amazing efforts. The public private partnerships that were there I had a chance to work with, uh, MJ and Tanya from from AWS some election project. I think everyone has skin in the game. Everyone wants to make it better. And I hope that moment, um, continues. But I think, you know, embracing that there needs to be a centralized, uniformed place, uh, for every state. And I think that would get rid of a lot of confusion >>when you talk about culture and you mentioned specifically called Do you think that people and agencies and politicians are ready to embrace the culture? Is there enough data to support that? This is really serious. We need to embrace this. We need to buy in a You said, um >>I hope right. I don't know what it could take. I'm hoping so after seeing everything you know, being at the White House from that aperture in 2016. Seeing all of that, I would, you know, think right away. Oh, my gosh. 2018, The midterms, We're gonna be on the ball. And that really didn't happen like we thought it would. 2020. We saw a different kind of technical or I guess, not as technical, uh, security problem. And I think I'm kind of shifting from that to the future. People realize. And I think, uh, both sides of the aisle are working towards security programs and security posture. I think there's a lot of people that have bought into the idea. Um, but I think it kind of starts from the top, and I'm hoping it becomes a standard, so there's not really an option. You will do this just for the security and safety of the campaigns and the electoral process. But I do see a lot more people leaning into it, and a lot more resource is available for those people that are >>talk to me about kind of the status of awareness of security. Needing to combat these issues, be able to remediate them, be able to defend against them where our folks in that awareness cycle, >>I think it ebbs and flows like any other process. Any other you know, incident, event. That happens. And from my experience in the info SEC world, normally there's a compromise. There's an incident, a bunch of money gets thrown at it and then we forget about it a year or two later. Um, I think that culture, that awareness comes in when you have folks that would sustain that effort. And again, you know, on the campaign, um, even at the White House, we try to make everyone apart of security. Security is and all the time thing that everyone has a stake in. Um, you know, I can lock down your email at work. I can make sure this system is super super secure, but it's your personal threat model. You know, your personal email account, your personal social media, putting more security on those and being aware of those, I think that's that awareness is growing. And I Seymour folks in the security community just kind of preaching that awareness more and more and something I'm really, really excited about. >>Yeah, the biggest thing I always think when we talk about security is people that were the biggest threat vector and what happened 89 months ago when so many businesses, um, in any, you know, public sector and private went from on site almost maybe 100% on site to 100% remote people suddenly going, I've got to get connected through my home network. Maybe I'm on my own personal device and didn't really have the time of so many distractions to recognize a phishing email just could come in and propagate. So it's that the people challenge e always seems to me like that might be the biggest challenge. Besides, the technology in the process is what do you think >>I again it goes back. I think it's all part of it. I think. People, um, I've >>looked at it >>slightly. Ah, friend of mine made a really good point. Once he was like, Hey, people gonna click on the link in the email. It's just I think 30% of people dio it's just it's just the nature of people after 20 some odd years and info sec, 20 some odd years and security. I think we should have maybe done a better job of making that link safer, to click on, to click on to make it not militias. But again it goes back, Thio being aware, being vigilant and to your point. Since earlier this year, we've seen a tax increase exponentially specifically on remote desktop protocols from Cove. It related themes and scams and, you know, ransomware targeting healthcare systems. I think it's just the world's getting smaller and we're getting more connected digitally. That vigilance is something you kind of have to building your threat model and build into the ecosystem. When we're doing everything, it's just something you know. I quit a lot, too. You've got junk email, your open your mailbox. You got some junk mail in there. You just throw it out. Your email inbox is no different, and just kind of being aware of that a little more than we are now might go a long way. But again, I think security folks want to do a better job of kind of making these things safer because malicious actors aren't going away. >>No, they're definitely not going away that we're seeing the threat surfaces expanding. I think it was Facebook and TIC Tac and Instagram that were hacked in September. And I think it was unsecured cloud database that was the vehicle. But talking about communication because we talk about culture and awareness communication from the top down Thio every level is imperative. How how do we embrace that and actually make it a standard as possible? >>Uh, in my experience, you know, from an analyst to a C So being able to communicate and communicate effectively, it's gonna save your butt, right? It's if you're a security person, you're You're that cyber guy in the back end, something just got hacked or something just got compromised. I need to be able to communicate that effectively to my leadership, who is gonna be non technical people, and then that leadership has to communicate it out to all the folks that need to hear it. I do think this year just going back to our elections, you saw ah lot of rapid communication, whether it was from DHS, whether it was from, you know, public partners, whether was from the team over Facebook or Twitter, you know, it was ah, lot of activity that they detected and put out as soon as they found it on it was communicated clearly, and I thought the messaging was done beautifully. When you look at all the work that you know Microsoft did on the block post that came out, that information is put out as widely as possible on. But I think it just goes back to making sure that the people have access to it whenever they need it, and they know where to get it from. Um, I think a lot of times you have compromised and that information is slow to get out. And you know that DeLay just creates a confusion, so it clearly concisely and find a place for people, could get it >>absolutely. And how do you see some of these challenges spilling over into your role as the security advisor for Splunk? What are some of the things that you're talking with customers about about right now that are really pressing issues? >>I think my Rolex Plunkett's super super weird, because I started earlier in the year, I actually started in February of this year and a month later, like, Hey, I'm hanging out at home, Um, but I do get a chance to talk to ah, lot of organizations about her security posture about what they're doing. Onda about what they're seeing and you know everything. Everybody has their own. Everybody's a special snowflakes so much more special than others. Um, credit to Billy, but people are kind of seeing the same thing. You know, everybody's at home. You're seeing an increase in the attack surface through remote desktop. You're seeing a lot more fishing. You're singing just a lot. People just under computer all the time. Um, Zoom WebEx I've got like, I don't know, a dozen different chat clients on my computer to talk to people. And you're seeing a lot of exploits kind of coming through that because of that, people are more vigilant. People are adopting new technologies and new processes and kind of finding a way to move into a new working model. I see zero trust architecture becoming a big thing because we're all at home. We're not gonna go anywhere. And we're online more than we're not. I think my circadian rhythm went out the window back in July, so all I do is sit on my computer more often than not. And that caused authentication, just, you know, make sure those assets are secure that we're accessing from our our work resource is I think that gets worse and worse or it doesn't. Not worse, rather. But that doesn't go away, no matter what. Your model is >>right. And I agree with you on that circadian rhythm challenge. Uh, last question for you. As we look at one thing, we know this uncertainty that we're living in is going to continue for some time. And there's gonna be some elements of this that air gonna be permanent. We here execs in many industries saying that maybe we're going to keep 30 to 50% of our folks remote forever. And tech companies that air saying Okay, maybe 50% come back in July 2021. As we look at moving into what we all hope will be a glorious 2021 how can businesses prepare now, knowing some amount of this is going to remain permanent? >>It's a really interesting question, and I'll beyond, I think e no, the team here. It's Plunkett's constantly discussions that start having are constantly evaluating, constantly changing. Um, you know, friends in the industry, it's I think businesses and those executives have to be ready to embrace change as it changes. The same thing that the plans we would have made in July are different than the plans we would have made in November and so on. Andi, I think, is having a rough outline of how we want to go. The most important thing, I think, is being realistic with yourself. And, um, what, you need to be effective as an organization. I think, you know, 50% folks going back to the office works in your model. It doesn't, But we might not be able to do that. And I think that constant ability Thio, adjust. Ah, lot of company has kind of been thrown into the fire. I know my backgrounds mostly public sector and the federal. The federal Space has done a tremendous shift like I never well, rarely got to work, uh, vert remotely in my federal career because I did secret squirrel stuff, but like now, the federal space just leaning into it just they don't have an option. And I think once you have that, I don't I don't think you put Pandora back in that box. I think it's just we work. We work remote now. and it's just a new. It's just a way of working. >>Yep. And then that couldn't be more important to embrace, change and and change over and over again. Make. It's been great chatting with you. I'd love to get dig into some of that secret squirrel stuff. I know you probably have to shoot me, so we will go into that. But it's been great having you on the Cube. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on election security. It's C T O and S VP of product strategy And Dave Russell, VP of Enterprise Strategy, is here as well. Danny and a Welcome back to the Cube. >>Hi, Lisa. Great to be here. >>Hey, Lisa. Great to be here. Love talking with this audience >>It and thankfully, because of technologies like this in the zoom, were still able to engage with that audience, even though we would all be gearing up to be Go spending five days in Vegas with what 47,000 of our closest friends across, you know, and walking a lot. But I wanted Thio. Danny, start with you and you guys had them on virtually this summer. That's an event known for its energy. Talk to me about some of the things that you guys announced there. And how are your customers doing with this rapid change toe? work from home and this massive amount of uncertainty. >>Well, certainly no one would have predicted this the beginning of the year. There has been such transformation. There was a statement made earlier this year that we've gone through two years of transformation in just two months, and I would say that is definitely true. If you look both internally and bean our workforce, we have 4400 employees all of a sudden, 3000 of them that had been going into the office or working from home. And that is true of our customer base as well. There's a lot of remote, uh, remote employ, mental remote working, and so that has. You would think it would have impact on the digital systems. But what it's done is it's accelerated the transformation that organizations were going through, and that's been good in a number of different aspects. One certainly cloud adoption of clouds picked up things like Microsoft teams and collaboration software is certainly picked up, so it's certainly been a challenging year on many fronts. But on the on the other hand, it's also been very beneficial for us as well. >>Yeah, I've talked to so many folks in the last few months. There's silver linings everywhere. There's opportunity everywhere. But give our audience standing an overview of who them is, what you do and how you help customers secure their data. >>Sure, so VM has been in the backup businesses. What I'll say We started right around when virtualization was taking off a little before AWS and you see two left computing services on DWI would do back up a virtual environments. You know, over the last decade, we have grown into a $1 billion company doing backup solutions that enable cloud data management. What do you mean by that? Is we do backup of all kinds of different infrastructures, from virtual to cloud based Assad's based to physical systems, You name it. And then when we ingest that data, what we do is we begin to manage it. So an example of this is we have 400,000 customers, they're going back up on premises. And one of the things that we've seen this year is this massive push of that backup data into S three into the public cloud and s. So this is something that we help our customers with as they go through this transformation. >>And so you've got a team for a ws Cloud native solution. Talk to me a little bit about that. And how does that allow business is to get that centralized view of virtual physical SAS applications? >>Yeah, I think it all starts with architecture er and fundamentally beams, architectures. ER is based upon having a portable data format that self describing. So what >>does >>that mean? That means it reduces the friction from moving data that might have been born on premises to later being Stan Shih ated in, say, the AWS cloud. Or you can also imagine now new workloads being born in the cloud, especially towards the middle and end of this year. A lot of us we couldn't get into our data center. We had to do everything remotely. So we had to try to keep those lights on operationally. But we also had to begin to lift and shift and accelerate your point about silver linings. You know, if there is a silver lining, the very prepared really benefited. And I think those that were maybe a little more laggards they caught up pretty quickly. >>Well, that's good to hear stick big sticking with you. I'd love to get your perspectives on I t challenges in the last nine months in particular, what things have changed, what remains the same. And where is back up as a priority for the the I T folks and really the business folks, too? >>Yeah, I almost want to start with that last piece. Where? Where's backup? So back up? Obviously well understood as a concept, it's well funded. I mean, almost everybody in their right mind has a backup product, especially for critical data. But yet that all sounds very much the same. What's very, very different, though? Where are those workloads? Where do they need to be going forward? What are the service level agreements? Meaning that access times required for those workloads? And while we're arguably transitioning from certain types of applications to new applications, the vast majority of us are dead in the middle of that. So we've got to be able to embrace the new while also anchoring back to the past. >>Yeah, I'm not so easily sudden, done professionally or personally, Danny, I'd love to get your perspective on how your customer conversations have changed. You know, we're executives like you, both of you are so used to getting on planes and flying around and being able Thio, engage with your customers, especially events like Vermont, and reinvent What's the change been like? And from a business perspective, are you having more conversations at that business? Little as the end of the day. If you can't recover the data, that's the whole point, right? >>Yeah, it is. I would say the conversations really have four sentiments to them. The first is always starts with the pandemic and the impact of the pandemic on the business. The second from there is it talks about resource. We talked about resource management. That's resource management, both from a cost perspective. Customers trying to shift the costs from Capex models typically on premises into Op X cloud consumption models and also resource management as well. There's the shift from customers who are used to doing business one way, and they're trying to shift the resources to make it effective in a new and better way. I'd say the third conversation actually pivots from there to things like security and governance. One of the interesting things this year we've seen a lot of is ransomware and malware and attacks, especially because the attack surface has increased with people working from home. There is more opportunity for organizations to be challenged, and then, lastly, always pivots where it ends up his digital transformation. How do I get from where I used to be to where I want to be? >>Yeah, the ransomware increase has been quite substantial. I've seen a number of big. Of course you never want to be. The brand garment was head Carnival Cruise Line. I think canon cameras as well and you're talking about you know you're right, Danny. The attacks are toe surfaces, expanding. Um, you know, with unprotected cloud databases. I think that was the Facebook Tic Tac Instagram pack. And so it's and also is getting more personal, which we have more people from home, more distractions. And that's a big challenge that organizations need to be prepared for, because, really, it's not a matter of are we going to get a hit? But it's It's when, and we need to make sure that we have that resiliency. They've talked to us about how them enables customers toe have that resiliency. >>Yeah, you know, it's a multilayered approach like you know, any good defensive mechanism. It's not one thing it's trying to do all of the right things in advance, meaning passwords and perimeter security and, ideally, virtual private networks. But to your point, some of those things can fail, especially as we're all working remotely, and there's more dependence on now. Suddenly, perhaps not so. I t sophisticated people, too. Now do the right things on a daily basis and your point about how personal is getting. If we're all getting emails about, click on this for helpful information on the pandemic, you know there's the likelihood of this goes up. So in addition to try and do good things ahead of time, we've got some early warning detection capabilities. We can alert that something looks suspicious or a novelist, and bare bears out better investigation to confirm that. But ultimately, the couple of things that we do, they're very interesting and unique to beam are we can lock down copy of the backup data so that even internal employees, even somewhat at Amazon, can't go. If it's marked immutable and destroy it, remove it, alter it in any way before it's due to be modified or deleted, erased in any way. But one of the ones I'm most excited about is we can actually recover from an old backup and now introduce updated virus signatures to ensure we don't reintroduced Day zero threats into production environment. >>Is it across all workloads, physical virtual things like, you know, Microsoft or 65 slack talked about those collaboration tools that immune ability, >>so immune ability. We're expanding out into multiple platforms today. We've got it on on premises object storage through a variety of different partners. Actually, a couple dozen different partners now, and we have something very unique with AWS s three object lock that we you can really lock down that data and ensure that can't be compromised. >>That's excellent, Danny, over to you in terms of cloud adoption, you both talked about this acceleration of digital business transformation that we've all seen. I think everyone has whiplash from that and that this adoption of cloud has increased. We've seen a lot of that is being a facilitator like, are you working with clients who are sort of, you know, maybe Dave at that point you talked about in the beginning, like kind of on that on that. Bring in the beginning and we've got to transform. We've got to go to the cloud. How do you kind of help? Maybe facilitate their adoption of public health services like AWS with the technologies that the off first? >>Yeah, I'd say it's really two things everyone wants to say, Hey, we're disrupting the market. We're changing everything about the world around us. You should come with us. Being actually is a very different approach to this one is we provide stability through the disruption around you. So as your business is changing and evolving and you're going through digital transformation, we can give you the stability through that and not only the stability through that change, but we can help in that change. And what I mean by that is if you have a customer who's been on premises and running the workloads on premises for a long while, and maybe they've been sending their backups and deaths three and flagging that impute ability. But maybe now they want to actually migrate the workloads into E. C to weaken. Do that. It's a It's a three step three clicks and workflow to hit a button and say send it up into Easy to. And then once it's in AWS, we can protect the workload when it's there. So we don't just give the stability in this changing environment around us. But we actually help customers go through that transformation and help them move the workloads to the most appropriate business location for them. >>And how does that Danny contending with you from a cost optimization perspective? Of course, we always talk about cost as a factor. Um, I'm going to the cloud. How does that a facilitator of, like, being able to move some of those workloads like attitude that you talked about? Is that a facilitator of cost optimization? Lower tco? I would imagine at some point Yes, >>Yes, it is. So I have this saying the cloud is not a charity right there later in margin, and often people don't understand necessarily what it's going to cost them. So one of the fundamental things that we've had in being back up for a W s since the very beginning since version one is we give cost forecasting and it's not just a rudimentary cost forecasting. We look at the storage we looked compute. We looked at the networking. We look at what all of the different factors that go into a policy, and we will tell them in advance what it's going to cost. That way you don't end up in a position where you're paying a lot more than you expected to pay. And so giving that transparency, giving the the visibility into what the costs of the cloud migration and adoption are going to be is a critical motivator for customers actually to use our software. >>Awesome. And Dave, I'm curious if we look at some of the things trends wise that have gone on, what are you seeing? I t folks in terms of work from home, the remote workers, but I am imagine they're getting their hands on this. But do you expect that a good amount of certain types of folks from industries won't go back into the office because I ts realizing, like more cost optimization? Zor Hey, we don't need to be on site because we can leverage cloud capabilities. >>Yeah, I think it works, actually, in both directions least, I think we'll see employees continue to work remotely, so the notion of skyscrapers being filled with tens of thousands of people, you know, knowledge workers, as they were once called back in the day. That may not come to pass at least any time soon. But conversely to your point everybody getting back into the data center, you know, from a business perspective, the vast majorities of CEO so they don't wanna be in the real estate business. They don't wanna be in the brick and mortar and the power cooling the facilities business. So >>that was >>a trend that was already directionally happening. And just as an accelerant, I think 2000 and 20 and probably 2021 at least the first half just continues that trend. >>Yeah, Silicon Valley is a bit lonely. The freeways there certainly emptier, which is one thing. But it is. It's one of those things that you think you could be now granted folks that worked from home regardless of the functions they were in before. It's not the same. I think we all know that it's not the same working from home during a pandemic when there's just so much more going on. But at the same time, I think businesses are realizing where they can actually get more cost optimization. Since you point not wanting to manage real estate, big data centers, things like that, that may be a ah, positive spin on what this situation has demonstrated. Daddy Last question to you. I always loved it to hear about successful customers. Talk to me about one of your favorite reference customers that really just articulates beams value, especially in this time of helping customers with so many pivots. >>Well, the whole concept of digital transformation is clearly coming to the forefront with the pandemic. And so one of my favorite customers, for example, ducks unlimited up in Canada. They have i ot sensors where they're collecting data about about climate information. They put it into a repository and they keep it for 60 years. Why 60 years? Because who knows? Over the next 60 years, when these sensors in the data they're collecting may be able to solve problems like climate change. But if you >>look at it >>a broader sense, take that same concept of collection of data. I think we're in a fantastic period right now where things like Callum medicine. Um, in the past, >>it was >>kind of in a slow roll remote education and training was on kind of a slow roll. Climate change. Slow roll. Um, but now the pandemics accelerating. Ah, lot of that. Another customer, Royal Dutch Shell, for example. Traditionally in the oil and petrochemical industry, their now taking the data that they have, they're going through this transformation faster than ever before and saying, How do I move to sustainable energy? And so a lot of people look at 2020 and say, I want how does this year? Or, you know, this is not the transformation I want. I actually take the reverse of that. The customers that we have right now are taking the data sets that they have, and they're actually optimizing for a more sustainable future, a better future for us and for our Children. And I think that's a fantastic thing, and being obviously helps in that transformation. >>That's excellent. And I agree with you, Danny, you know, the necessity is the mother of invention. And sometimes when all of these challenges air exposed, it's hard right away to see what are the what are the positives right? What are the opportunities? But from a business perspective is you guys were talking about the beginning of our segment, you know, in the beginning was keeping the lights on. Well, now we've got to get from keeping the lights on, too. Surviving to pivoting well to thriving. So that hopefully 2021 this is good as everybody hopes it's going to be. Right, Dave? >>Yeah, absolutely. It's all data driven and you're right. We have to move from keep the lights up on going the operational aspect to growing the business in new ways and ideally transforming the business in new ways. And you can see we hit on digital transformation a number of times. Why? Because its data driven, Why do we intercept that with being well? Because if it's important to you, it's probably backed up and held for long term safekeeping. So we want to be able to better leverage the data like Danny mentioned with Ducks Unlimited. >>And of course, as we know, data volumes are only growing. from the cube studios in Palo Alto in Boston connecting with thought leaders all around the world this is a cube conversation LeBron's special conversation I'm John Tory here in the cube I'm not in the studio I'm at home we're sheltering in place the studio quarantine crew is there we've got a great guest here to break down and Alice in the tech industries for vallah who's this principle of zk research Aziz great to check in with you for our check-in last time we chatted you broke down entire industry a lot to talk about now we have the Cisco earnings just came out and a lot of other great things are happening thanks for joining me well what's your take on what's going on yeah I think so thanks John it's uh it's been heard about tumultuous last few months I think one of the takeaways I had from Cisco's earnings actually was that it's not as bad as you think I know if you read a lot of what's going on the media we get everything from doomsday and the world's ending or whatever but I think what Cisco's earnings showed and in Cisco I know they have a lot of enemies and a lot of competitors out there but they're really still a bellwether for the industry and so everyone should rejoice in the fact that they actually had a pretty good quarter I think what was was telling about that was security was up the services business was up the margins were good and what that shows me is that there's still room for innovation customers relax are still buying things and they're willing to pay for things that actually help drive their business forward and so Cisco's put a lot of energy into their services group to make sure that customers are able to adapt their technology and change their business right and so from an overall market perspective Cisco is you know they're the quarters are the court has shifted from almost everybody else's and so they're generally a leading indicator of where things are going so I think the fact that they showed some strength they guided up from where the street thought I think that's a good thing for the entire industry and I think I'm not saying we're out of this yet but I think businesses are starting to spend money where they need to in order to put themselves in a position to come on strong after well once we start going back to work whoever knows what that'll be I think the other sort of interesting pivot here is that I think the overall role the network has changed with income right we've covered networking technologies a long time it gets a little bit of interest sometimes from sea level certainly not as much as it should from CEOs and CIOs a lot of people think of it as the plumbing and the pipes it's hard to understand it's a very complicated technology sometimes but when you look at what's happened with digital transformation initiatives and now covent we've got more people at home or adopting cloud services we use video for connecting more things with IOT initiatives so the overall value of the network is increased that I think that was also reflected in Cisco's numbers I think this transition had started when you look at a lot of the building blocks and digital transformation IOT cloud mobility things like that they're all Network centric in nature and so for the first time in history I think business leaders actually need to look at their network strategies because if that's without a sound network strategy as we sort of come out of this and the companies that have a good one will be able to really step on the gas and do what they want with their business the ones that don't I think I'd a really struggle to survive because I'm not gonna be able to do a lot of these advanced things yeah great point one of the things Brazil the new cisco has a new leadership new c has been in place for a while positioning they're going after and you know with the cloven crisis it really puts more pressure knock the move of the network because it's a core staple of an organization yet the transformation journey is going to be accelerated this gives Cisco it's a lucky strike for Cisco because it'll move packets around and the multi cloud conversation comes in and the enablement of application development all being five to the network is what cisco has been preparing on and this has kind of been a nuance point then that everyone understands but coming out of Cova to have a growth strategy if you're not programming up and down the stack with DevOps and Nets a cops or whatever you want to call it people working at home a new perimeter is now emerged that's everything everything is the premise is this a tailwind for Cisco your thoughts on that your face oh yeah the big time tailwind francisco i think what's happened gentlemen you look at network evolution over the last five years we can do much more with our network that's coming to cost and that cost us complexity so trying to tie all these things together SP Winn Sassie datacenter Sdn right we've got Wi-Fi six coming we've got 5g coming so we've got all these great things that we're gonna let our networks be faster than ever before and run applications we can never run before right you look at some of the demos on 5g we're able to wear untethered Wi-Fi our virtual reality headsets complete creating completely new shopping experiences educational experiences but you need a lot of bandwidth that but not only you need bandwidth I think the one thing that Kovac has taught us is do you have any weakness in the network anywhere right from the user's hand all the way to the cloud that weak point at the time and so now you have to start thinking of your network not in pieces of having a campus network Wi-Fi network data center network and that a single network right and so cisco is really one of the few companies maybe the only company that can actually deliver that end and network that starts in the company extends to people's homes goes out to the cloud and with what they've done masterfully under Chuck Robbins is they've been able to pile those things together to create a much simpler way of operating this complicated network so you look at what they're doing you know with a CI and intent based networking what that is is you can think of it almost as a software overlay that masks the complexity of the network that's underneath it yeah talking about cisco over the past decade and a half and i'm with the stack guys you gotta move up the stack this has been this is now their opportunity and with multi cloud on the horizon or here this is going to give cisco a path but I got to ask you what is your take and advice to Cisco when you're out there talking to them you're talking to of the customers all the time and practitioners you're the analyst what do they need to do better because you can't just wish a multi cloud upon the marketplace it's coming but it's not clearly not the use case yet so that's a time lag between a CI intent based networking to true multi-cloud what if Cisco do in the meantime yeah well I think what's this go has to do is is think about what they're doing with a CI and multi cloud and actually help their customers implement it in in pieces and what the description I'd use is is the paths this goes on and the path customers are on actually in this world of you think if the end state is true hybrid multi-cloud right we have to get there in ship shots and not moon shots and what I mean by that is if you were to say to a customer this is your end state right the path to get there is so donkey and it's like a moon shot that it paralyzes the customer if you break this down into a set of chip shots right that gets much easier so so put the infrastructure in place to be able to just have the visibility across applause then maybe automate movement from hi private the public cloud right then automate some of the processes that give you the most headaches then move to a bigger Ottoman Ottoman automation framework right so yeah areas like security network configuration right things like that those are those are very difficult for customers to do manually those are the things they should be automating today so what they want to do is almost take through their intent-based network to almost as a lighthouse the road to a visionary state and then help customers get there in pieces because if they try and rush them along too fast I think they'll lose the customer because the complexity is too high the other area they should really be focused on is continuing to mature the services business I think that's something under Chuck Robbins that's night and day different than what it was the services business - Cisco prior to Chuck was a lot of break fix you know their TAC is well renowned as being a great pack but now they've gotten more of the pro services they've gotten more into adoption services and I think the more subscription they sell what Cisco needs to really understand is that customers tend not to renew things they don't use right so making sure that the services group helps customers and use the things that they're paying for and that'll pay dividends for them multiple dividends for them down the road I want to get the silken one on that opportunity to upsell and do a refresh because what refreshes are not gonna be on the docket early on unless discuss business value so let's hold that for a second John Chambers has been on the cube recently in his new role as a coach and investor and he says to us on the cube you know transitions versus transformation Cisco and the big companies are expected to win the transitions but now with coming out of this there's real transformation so you got to look at things like collaboration hey guys get better this is not just win the enterprise with a better web max zoom is they can ask Bob teams is out there so you know Cisco's that's a huge collaboration piece and a bunch of other business so where's their transition wins and where's their transformational opportunity in Europe in well I think the entire company is kind of going through transformations right even on the network side so it's right it's like you know the industry has been calling Francisco to get commoditized for years right and if you look the product gross margins are actually the strongest they've been in a decade right so I remember when I fell below 60% they everybody thought the world was falling this quarter I think was a little over 65 on the product side and so my belief is nothing is really a commodity if you can drive innovation that's what's this has been doing so from a transition standpoint I think they've done a lot of that they've transitioned the company to software and services they've transitioned the company more terrain model they've actually decoupled software from the hardware so customers can buy differently and you brought up the fact that we may not have a hardware refresh but that's okay as long as they keep the software a newa cycles forth where the transformations has to come is completely change the dynamics of how something works and so with intent-based networking you think of the old way that network engineers to work like the way I used to work when I was an engineer a lot of hunting pecking and at a CLI doing a lot of cutting and pasting and using homegrown tools that doesn't scale anymore my research shows that on average takes companies about four months the implemented change network-wide far too slow for digital company right so Francisco's done is they've accelerated that by letting customers automate more things and so Francisco the transformation comes in allowing customers to new new things I think you read in the collaboration side there's more work to do nobody's got a bigger collaboration portfolio than Cisco they got endpoints they got rooms just right they've got software they were a cloud on Prem but they got to take that and tie it together and I think the other area that's is gonna need improving is on they've they've got a lot of management tools that that look at different things they have at the ACI manager and a whole bunch of different security consoles in fact they funded them sometimes and said that the market leader in single panes of glass because they have more than anybody right I think eventually they got to be able to tie that information together and help customers understand what it means from a cross domain perspective because they still build a product's wireless campus data center but as I mentioned before we just have one network and so Cisco can aggregate this data up apply machine learning to it and help customers what that means they see insight across the entire network that would really be powerful because they they've got the footprint now they just have to be able to deliver the machine learning based insights some customers understand what that data means and they have a unique opportunity in the short term no one's going to be kidding Cisco out anytime soon there's a safety rating and using the big companies I think what what Cisco is able to bring is a there's a level of financial stability that other companies may not have and so they can weather the storm for a long time so you know I it's easy to say going to Cisco is the safe bet it has been for a long time but but i but I think it's also the smart bet I think they're they're able to continue to invest in things maybe smaller companies more people do yeah my question on Cisco a big fan of their strategy have been vocal about that for a while my question on Cisco want to be critical is to say how fast can you get that development going show the software value in market show customers a growth trajectory that they can execute on it can advantage the network policy intelligence if they could do that they're gonna be in good shape you agree yeah I think one of the challenges though is the transformation of their customer base do and that's where the work Suzy we've been doing in the dev that teams so important like if if they were to shift their whole strategy over at the developer folks talk word today I think that would largely put them in a position or trouble because the engineers that work with the stuff and the resellers that work with the stuff aren't they don't really have the skill sets they advantage that right so last year Suzy we she really talked a lot about the growth a definite this year they came out with in Barcelona this year they they came up with a bunch of certifications for dev net now there they were actually coming out with a number of a partner certifications as well so the resellers can get certified but I think it's important that they continue to push their engineer base into gaining these new skills I'll give you an interesting data point for my research and that's you know that only about a quarter of networking engineers has ever made an API call right and so you look at all Cisco's new gear it's all API driven and so if you want to do something as simple as say get all the IP addresses in your network you can just use an API call for that right the other way to do it is you do a show command and the CLI your screen scrape and you take a visual basic trip that you parse it you know and you get it that way right so the API map using those is a lot easier and so I think Cisco's got a good strategy with Deb net they've grown that face a lot it's still relatively small you know it's under a million people and you think of the overall size the Cisco customer user base point that's where they gonna put some effort right more and more out driving adoption to them now well I think you're smarter than I think you're researching them they must be listening to you because they haven't really tried to jam that down their throats they've been very humble about it and I think a million is pretty damn good number I think Cisco again to your point they're bringing people into the water the low end first before you you go to the deep end so swim with the bubble if you will with definite what they did was they assumed the engineer had no knowledge of software because I think at first when they put the lot of the programs a place they assumed people would have some knowledge of how to code right and and I also think the industry did them a bit of a disservice we used her there was a lot of stuff written in the media how every network engineer needs to become a software developer well they don't have to summer get make them software developers but they at least have to come software power ease right so do your job through software but you don't have to be a developer and that's where definite really when it really matured is that diverge down to past developer engineer who's your saw common software skills and then you break down a specialist after that and so they've they've actually helped with the maturity of that they've changed their certification programs for reflect that and I think Devin that really is a big be and if they can transition that engineer base then it helps the adoption of the new on these I want to get your final thoughts on this segment on multi-cloud obviously it would be a really great win for it creates of interoperability strictly with the network intelligence cisco could bring to the table and others you got startups out there like aviatrix and others and vmware with nsx trying to get that for the security fabric a lot of action going on with multi cloud and networking your thoughts what does your research tell you what's gonna transpire how do you see that market playing out in my research shows that little R ad percent of companies prior to Co vid had multi-cloud on the roadmap and I'm assuming that's that's gone up I haven't actually done a survey since then um one of the I think it's funny koban exposed a lot of things from a lot of vendors right and I think one of the things that is is shown cracks in the cloud yeah you look at some of the the data and how many outages Microsoft had Google had some strains AWS has held up pretty well under the strain of of a lot of the higher utilization when coated but they've been building a lot of capacity into theirs as well so I think from a customer perspective it makes sense you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket some cloud providers are stronger in some regions they each have different their own different cloud platforms other private cloud platforms and the problem is is if you decide if you decide to go multi-cloud you can't use the cloud providers tools right so if I use an AWS load balancer that works great in AWS but it's not gonna help me with Azure or GCE similarly if I use GCP tools I can't extend that out the azure so something needs to connect those and be able to five security and policy and that's where multi cloud comes from and you're right there's some good startups there I think um the difference with Cisco this time versus the Sdn world was when as the ends came about I think Cisco didn't want that to happen and I think they actually actively worked against us the end and I've talked to chuck Robbins about that he said you'll never ever see Cisco do that again if something is good for the customers they want to lead that transition and so Cisco's been very active in multi focking and given they've got the install base already I do think they will help bring this long but there are some good stir yeah it's interesting Sdn really wasn't ready for primetime even when VMware bought in this era hey when it was still there I didn't have a lot of revenue it had a future VMware claims that's the saves and NSX was saved by a Sdn some people say was completely rewritten final thoughts on outlook and you see coming out of Ovid obviously it's been well reported we've been reporting VPNs have been under provision that was a blind spot bought a blind spots and disruption that wasn't forecasted in the classic sense there was no there was no you know hurricane there was no flood it was a covin invisible disruption yeah and there's no impact right like even with when you think of what happened with the the floods in New York and 9/11 people knew that they'd eventually go back and so business continuity and disaster recovery was a temporary thing and I can I set up a data center to work for a couple months so I can go back to New York that's not the case with koban where we're trying to manage for an undefined endpoint which is extremely difficult for an IT perspective I do think that Kogan again has highlighted the value of the network I think we'll see a lot of transition from VPN to sd when I think that's that's certainly good I think the rise in video will also cause a Wi-Fi upgrade cycle we'll get back to the office and I think you'll see a lot of focus on programmability and agility because I don't believe we're gonna see everybody return to the office was like one big bang John I think we're more likely to see is the future work to be almost like when you and I were in college we do a bunch of stuff at home we go to the campus when we have classes and when we want to meet people similarly we'll go to work when we have meetings and then in between meetings we'll go find an open place to work but in general we'll do a lot of work a lot more work from home in fact my research shows 93 percent of the business leaders I interviewed said they expect to see at least a 30 percent increase in the work from home post Kovan right so we're gonna have a lot more people doing that but it's not gonna be everyone working for home everybody work in the office it's gonna be a hybrid of the two people are gonna come and go and that bribes the need for agility and today's networks really not that agile and so I need I want to go back to college if we do thirsty happy hours do I mean have the whole week or the stupid stuff it's the final point you mentioned SP when I was talking with Dave Volante SP Minutemen just last week and I said you know this SD win today is not your grandfather's sdn meaning SP where it's changed a lot it's basically the internet now so what was the modern update definition of SD grin I mean it used to be you connect the wide area network you can have some campus you'd do some networking what is it now what's the same name but it's yeah what is it your journey the technology if you look at the adoption of anything right the first wave of stuff is to make the new stuff look like the old stuff so we put VoIP in we made it look a lot like TDM when we had cloud we lifted and shift it and how did we didn't really enjoy wraps and then we eventually get smart and think what can I do with the new thing that I can't do the old thing and so a lot of early SD win deployments were simply just replacements for MPLS and they were put in to save a bit of money but now companies are getting smarter they're thinking about what can I do with my SD win that I couldn't do before so there's a lot more tighter integration with security I think as companies but SD win in and and think about what the win is today John it used to be corporate offices and data centers I think it's everybody's house right and so being able to extend your win at the single people out to planes trains and automobiles you remember that movie but those are all getting connected as well people's back acts fan kiosk those are all becoming way endpoints right so that's where you need to embed more security in the network and so I think that's a transition we've seen into that see you and I think the technology has matured to the point where it's getting easier to deploy faster to flow and you're right we can use the internet for transport in some cases some will still keep there still be a lot of MPLS out there but I do think we wind up in this hybrid world but clearly then the time has never been better for for SD win I will see a rule of curve for that because it's the only way to extend the win the people's homes the things the cars and really anything that's connected you know that's such a great point and I think this is a real new once in the industry it's a whole nother rebirth of the category because the aperture is brighter you got policy you've got reliability and get security built in this is key key Johnny H salt key yeah yeah whole concept the AI ops becomes real because we're collecting data and we're able to use AI to automate operations so Z's we call it s T win 2.0 that's what you got to do we got making an acronym out of this come on we can't just saw s T when it is SD win - righto because it's the next it's that it's it's the second wave of it we're actually thinking about how to transform our companies so the the John Chambers quote of transition for transversus transformation is apropos because the like I said a lot of the waves that that Cisco went through early on was we transition the market and then we transform right and so SD win so far has been transitional moving away from the old thing but now in strength and defense formed where our entire network operates these gradients that always a pleasure to talk to you get the straight scoop for the signal right there from all the noise in the industry now more than ever people are gonna be Stefan Renner is Technical Director, Global Alliances at Veeam Software is with us with Darren Williams, @MrHyperFlex, that's his Twitter handle, go check him out. HyperFlex-V at Cisco, guys welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you. >> Also love the Twitter handle. >> Darren: I live the brand. >> You live the brand. I mean that's got some longevity to it, it's evergreen. So congratulations on that. You guys are together with Cisco Veeam, what's the story? What's going on in Europe with Cisco and Veeam? >> I would say there is a lot of stuff going on between Cisco and Veeam. Especially around the Hyperflex story, obviously is the topic of this session, right? So having integration, Hyperflex, having a good go-to-market, having a good relationship between the two companies. We just joked about how often we've been in front of cameras talking about this exact same topic. So that shows that the relationship between the two of us is really moving forward and in a good shape. >> I think we're in good shape in terms of, you think about not just my product, Hyperflex, but you look at what Veeam can do for the rest of Cisco data-centered products, and be that backup, safer hands around what we need in terms of that data protection layer. But also then, what we can add in terms of that target to be the server of choice for backups so you get the benefits of the speed, performance, and more importantly, you get quicker restores. Because that's the important bit, you need to be able to do the quick restore. >> Yeah, we usually talk about availability, right? We don't talk about backups or recovery. Even if recovery is maybe the most important part of availability, still we talk more about availability than maybe anything else. The good thing about Cisco is that the actually can deliver what we need in terms of performance, in terms of capacity, in terms of compute resources. So yeah, that's a real benefit. >> It's such an interesting time, I mean we look back at history, go back 10 years ago, maybe, or more; backup recover, that's like, "Oh, we forgot to talk about that in our RFP." Kind of bolted on, kind of retrofitted in. But now we've seen it come to the main center. But more importantly, with AI and Cloud, and all the action happening with DevOpps on premises, you hear CIOs and CXOs and developers saying, "We're data driven." >> Yeah. >> Okay, so if you're data driven, you have to be data protection driven too. So those things go hand in hand. So the question for you guys is how does a data driven organization, whether it's in the data center, all the way up to the business units, or the business processes, become data protection built in? How do they design in from day one a data protection system up and down the stack? >> Yeah, so maybe I'll start to answer that question. I think when I'm going to customers, and I fully agree on what you just said, most customers 10 years ago were focusing on getting used to platforms and getting used to org systems. It has to be an isolated project, right? Now in those days when I go to customers I tried to convince them to include data protection in every project the do in data center, because at the end, data protection is one of the core elements. >> So designing in early, at the front end? >> I say whenever you go about having a new Hyperflex system or whenever you talk about replacing your existing environment, whatever you do, right, just look into data protection, looking into your availability story. Because right now, and you mentioned that, it's about data services, right? We don't really talk about restoring of EM, we don't restore to the single file. It's about, the customer wants to have a data availability in terms of a service availability. And that includes more than just the VM, it includes more than just the single thing, right? >> Yeah. So they need to include data protection and the design of that in the whole org chart. From the beginning. >> And you're point? >> Yeah we look at it from a similar thing in terms of where you've got changes happening in terms of the way people are looking at how they want to design their applications, where they want their data to live. And that's the whole messaging around 3.0, is that multi-Cloud readiness platform. Being able to think about an application and go, "Do I want to design in the public, and house privately, "or vice versa? Do I want to house the data "of the application in a private location "and the actual application in public?" Having that being able to be transparent to a user in terms of the way they design it and then position, but also as we look at other applications, not all people on this journey are going to go, "We're going to put everything in the Cloud." They're going to look at about, maybe have a little bit in the Cloud, a little bit of the traditional apps we need to manage and protect. And it's all about that 3.0 that we've delivered the pre-multi-Cloud offering around Hyperconvergence, we've now brought the multi-Cloud element. It's giving you the choice of where you want to position things, where you want to house things, how you want to design things. And keeping it nice and simple for customers, and the agility and performance. >> Darren, some really interesting points that you just had there. When I think back to a few years ago, Hyperconverge, pretty strong in North America. But it was project based, it was like, let's take a VDI, some virtualized environment, it wasn't a Cloud discussion. >> Darren: Correct. >> Take us inside what you're seeing in Europe here, because today Hyperconverge is a lot about Cloud, how that kind of hybrid or multi-Cloud environment, so what are you hearing from your customers? >> Absolutely, and I think if you look at the, what's happened in times of Hyperconvergence up to this point it's the initial building block of this multi-Cloud. And we're seeing more and more customers now, I think the latest IDC survey, surveyed that 87% of all customers have a multi-Cloud strategy. And we're seeing now more of the ability to think of Hyperconvergence as that multi-Cloud strategy, and have that simplicity that people have done in terms of the initial thought around a simple application, how they can collapse the layers, they can now utilize that experience into the multi-Cloud experience. And we're seeing more and more of that. We've now got 2500 users around the world around Hyperflex, and about 700-800 EMEA, and the majority of those are utilizing it as private Cloud experience. They're getting the benefits of what they've had in the Cloud, and getting away from the sovereignty issues, and the shadow IT issues that they all face. They can now bring it back into their own data center. They can start small. They can spin out applications very quickly. They're getting the benefit of that Cloud message, but locally now. >> And I think that perfectly aligns with the Veeam story because as you know we are also focusing on the Cloud. We recently changed and also did some acquisitions on the Cloud, so we're also moving forward in the Cloud story and the HyperCloud area. And that's more or less what Cisco's multi-Cloud's story is also about, right? And I think one thing we should also mention here coming a bit back to how to implement and how to design such solutions as having more of a broad view on all the projects. I think one important thing for customers is the CBD Cisco has, right? And we do have CBD available to beam Cisco on the data protection layer. So we try to make it really easy for customers and for partners to design, implement and actually do the right decisions for those projects. >> Stefan, at Veeam On, of course a lot of partners, a lot of talk about the multi-Cloud, of course Veeam has a long history of VMware, but why don't you talk about Microsoft? I believe there's some things you've been doing lately with Hyper-V and the like, what's the update? >> Yeah, so obviously with Hyperflex there is Hyper-V coming, right? That's one of the bigger things coming to Hyperflex. Now for us, when we started to talk with Cisco, Cisco actually told us that Hyper-V is next and 3.0. We said that's fine for us, because as I said, we are dealing with Hyper-V like we did with VMware since a couple of years. So there is no big difference in terms of features and what we can do with Hyper-V. On the Microsoft side obviously it's around extract, which also is a big story with Cisco and Veeam, because there is a extract solution, and so we tried to get the extract fully integrated in the Veeam portfolio, and it's about effort, right? As we just talked about, making this Cloud journey even easier for the customer, making sure we have data protection forever, or making sure we can actually use our Cloud solutions to provide the full experience in the cloud. >> So the question on European audience, I was just looking at some Twitter tweets, getting in some feedback, is, "Ask the GDPR our question." Which is basically code words for the sophistication between data protection, you know we say as you get bitten in the butt if you don't prepare. And this is one of those things where I mean literally, there's so much data out there, people can't understand their own tables. I mean, if you have accounts, how do I know a user uses a certain name in this one, I got a certain name in this database, I mean it's just a nightmare to even understand what data do you have, nevermind taking someone out of a database. >> Yeah. >> So, the challenges are massive. >> Yep. >> This is coming down and it really highlights the bigger trend is: what do I do with the data, what is my protection, what's my recovery, how do I engage in real time, GDPR issue? Talk about the GDPR issue, and then what it really is going to mean for customers going forward. >> Well, I think if you think about GDPR, and people, I've got the understanding that it's just a mere thing, it's not. It's a worldwide thing. Any data that relates to a European citizen, anywhere in the world, is covered under the GDPR. So you've got to think about the multinationals we work with, have to have this GDPR thoughts, even if they're not based in EMEA. They may house data based around a European citizen. So it's a massive thing. Now, not one person or one organization can fix GDPR. We're all part of a bigger framework. So it looks like if you look at the Hyperflex offering, having self-encrypting drives, having good data protection and replication of the data so it's protected. That protects the actual content of a record, but it doesn't solve everything around GDPR. There's no one organization that can do that. It's about having that framework of you do the right decisions around the architecture, and the data protection, you'll get in there in terms of the protection. >> Well, I mean, I'm just going to rant here and say whoever came up with GDPR doesn't know anything about databases, okay. >> Darren: Yeah. >> I mean I get the concept, but, I mean, just think about how hard it is to deal with unstructured data, and structured data in and of itself within a company. Nevermind inside a company, what's happening externally, it is a technical nightmare. And so, yeah, just hand waving, "Hey, someone came "to your website." Well, did they come in anonymously, did they login, which identity did they login on? There's no - I mean it's a nightmare. This is a huge problem. What do customers do? >> I think if you talk about GDPR it's first of all not about a single solution, right? It's not an issue of just one company, or one vendor, one solution. It goes across different databases, different applications, different software, so as you said, it's database solutions, you need to delete maybe a single table entry, which is almost impossible right now. Especially if that's ina backup, right? How are you going to do that? I think between Cisco and us, and he mentioned that one important part of GDPR is data protection itself. So the customers need to make sure they can actually promise and they can show to the government that they have a proper data protection in place, so they can showcase what does my DR plan look like? How do I recover? What is my RPO? So we can already solve those issues. >> It changes your game because, for you, it turns you into a insurance policy to a proactive; in order to do data protection you actually have to know what the data is. So it kind of creates an opportunity to say hey, this is an opportunity to say we're going to start thinking about, kind of a new e-discovery model. >> If you look at 3.0, the multi-Cloud platform, we were discussing around how Hyperconvergence started very small in certain apps. But when you actually then expand that out into the multi-Cloud, security is a major pillar. And you've got to have the security elements, and Cisco has some great security offerings in the data center and outside of the data center. They all form part of that GDPR message. But it's been baked into multi-Cloud 3.0. as a key component to allow customers that confidence. >> It's going to be a Hyperconvergence of databases. So this is coming. >> Darren: Yeah. >> So this is going to force, I think the compliance is going to be more a shot across the bow, if you will. I don't know how hardcore they're going to be enforcing it. >> It's going to be interesting in the first one. Because at the moment I think a lot of customers are thinking, "Well, we'll wait till we see "how big the fines are, and then we'll decide." >> They're going to create shell corporations in the Cayman Islands. (laughter) >> Alright, so we've talked a little bit about some of the headwinds we're facing in IT. Talk about the tailwinds. A lot of things in the Hyperflex 3.0, got 700-800 customers, what's going to drive adoption, get that into thousands of customers here in 2018? >> So I think it's the simplicity message. Customers want ease of use of technology. They want to get away from what they've had before where they've had tough times standing up applications, where they've had to invest time around different skill sets for the infrastructure, be it networking, be it storage, be it compute. Having 3 teams back leaning against each other, and change windows. So the simplicity message of Hyperflex is you can have a three node cluster up and running in 34 minutes, including the network. We're the only ones that incorporate the network into the solution, and we do it for good reason. Because when we can get predictability in performance, and we can grow the solution very, very easily. And that's the whole point of what they're doing, is they want to be able to start small, and add more nodes when required, around what applications they're going to deploy on. Our tagline is "any application, anywhere" now, and either private location or into that multi-Cloud location. Gives customers choice, and I think as we start seeing more and more customers, 700 in just under 2 years is a phenomenal amount in EMEA, and 2500 worldwide, we've had some great traction. And it's just going to get faster and faster. >> Yeah, I think a lot of customers are obviously talking about moving to the Cloud completely or at least majority of the data. So for the customers that stay for them, and I talked with some customers today, and they told me, "For us right now, we can't focus "anymore on a data center itself. "We do have much more difficult and more important "topics to talk about and to cover in our IT business "than the basic data center itself" That includes compute, that includes digitalization. So it's great to hear you can actually set up a Hyperflex system, no matter if that's Hyper-V or VM or whatever in less than an hour, right? And if I tell you now that if you add Veeam on that to provide the availability for Hyperflex environment that's also less than an hour. So if you know how to configure that you can be done in a couple of hours, and you have more or less the whole data center set up. >> You bring up a really good point. What are customers concerned about? I have to worry about my application portfolio, I have my security issue, my whole Cloud strategy piece, so, if the infrastructure piece is just invisible and I don't have to touch it, tweak it and do that, I'm going to have time to actually grow my business. >> The more integrated it is, the more easy it is to set up and to maintain and troubleshoot by the way, that's also an important thing, right? What if it doesn't work? If there is a consistent layer, a consistent way to get all this information sent to get a troubleshooting thing done, the better it is for our customers. Because again, they don't want to care anymore about what's happening in the back end. >> And that's the next challenge we're addressing, in-app product or Insight, is taking that management solution into the Cloud to make things easier for customers. And being able to take a lot of the things we have in point product into a Cloud model. So the likes of analytics, the likes of Smart Tac. Customers get fed up if when they have an issue they have to go and roll the logs up into Tac, and then go and FTP them. They get away from that, they don't need to do that in Insight. And it's all about, we're talking about the deployment of technology, well one of the fist benefits of Insight is Hyperflex. We can roll out sites without even visiting them. You just do a Cloud deployment, and a Cloud management, and it's job done. >> And this is the whole point we were kind of getting at earlier, connect back to the compliance issue, these agile like things are happening; it's throwing off data too. So now you got to organize the data, you can't protect what you don't understand. >> Correct. >> I mean that is ultimately the bottom line for what's happening here. >> Yeah, you can't protect what you don't understand, I think that's a good conclusion of the whole thing. And I think for us >> By the way when you guys use that tagline I want royalties. But it's true. (laughter) We'll get back to you on that. No, but this is a big problem. Protection is inherently assuming you know the data is. >> Stefan: Yeah. >> Darren: Yeah. >> There it is. >> That's for sure the case, and one thing we worked on and, you know, we announced it a couple of months ago, was the Veeam Ability Orchestrator, which is another layer on top of it. So he just talked about how they can deploy within the site, multiple sites of Hyperflex very easily. And for us it's about, you know, getting the customer an easy solution with all the successful recovery and failovers in areas across the data centers with the Availability Orchestrator. >> Data is the competitive advantage, data is messy if you don't control it and reign it in, of course theCUBE is doing their part and bringing the data to you guys here in theCUBE with Veeam and Cisco partnership. When I think back to a few years ago, Hyperconverge, and about 700-800 EMEA, and the majority of those and actually do the right decisions for those projects. We're gettin' towards the end of the day here at Super Computing 2017 in Denver, Colorado. 12,000 people talkin' really about the outer limits of what you can do with compute power and lookin' out into the universe and black holes and all kinds of exciting stuff. We're kind of bringin' it back, right? We're all about democratization of technology for people to solve real problems. We're really excited to have our last guest of the day, bringin' the energy, Armughan Ahmad. He's SVP and GM, Hybrid Cloud and Ready Solutions for Dell EMC, and a many-time CUBE alumni. Armughan, great to see you. >> Yeah, good to see you, Jeff. So, first off, just impressions of the show. 12,000 people, we had no idea. We've never been to this show before. This is great. >> This is a show that has been around. If you know the history of the show, this was an IEEE engineering show, that actually turned into high-performance computing around research-based analytics and other things that came out of it. But, it's just grown. We're seeing now, yesterday the super computing top petaflops were released here. So, it's fascinating. You have some of the brightest minds in the world that actually come to this event. 12,000 of them. >> Yeah, and Dell EMC is here in force, so a lot of announcements, a lot of excitement. What are you guys excited about participating in this type of show? >> Yeah, Jeff, so when we come to an event like this, HBC-- We know that HBC is also evolved from your traditional HBC, which was around modeling and simulation, and how it started from engineering to then clusters. It's now evolving more towards machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence. So, what we announced here-- Yesterday, our press release went out. It was really related to how our strategy of advancing HBC, but also democratizing HBC's working. So, on the advancing, on the HBC side, the top 500 super computing list came out. We're powering some of the top 500 of those. One big one is TAC, which is Texas Institute out of UT, University of Texas. They now have, I believe, the number 12 spot in the top 500 super computers in the world, running an 8.2 petaflops off computing. >> So, a lot of zeros. I have no idea what a petaflop is. >> It's very, very big. It's very big. It's available for machine learning, but also eventually going to be available for deep learning. But, more importantly, we're also moving towards democratizing HBC because we feel that democratizing is also very important, where HBC should not only be for the research and the academia, but it should also be focused towards the manufacturing customers, the financial customers, our commercial customers, so that they can actually take the complexity of HBC out, and that's where our-- We call it our HBC 2.0 strategy, off learning from the advancements that we continue to drive, to then also democratizing it for our customers. >> It's interesting, I think, back to the old days of Intel microprocessors getting better and better and better, and you had Spark and you had Silicon Graphics, and these things that were way better. This huge differentiation. But, the Intel I32 just kept pluggin' along and it really begs the question, where is the distinction now? You have huge clusters of computers you can put together with virtualization. Where is the difference between just a really big cluster and HBC and super computing? >> So, I think, if you look at HBC, HBC is also evolving, so let's look at the customer view, right? So, the other part of our announcement here was artificial intelligence, which is really, what is artificial intelligence? It's, if you look at a customer retailer, a retailer has-- They start with data, for example. You buy beer and chips at J's Retailer, for example. You come in and do that, you usually used to run a SEQUEL database or you used to run a RDBMS database, and then that would basically tell you, these are the people who can purchase from me. You know their purchase history. But, then you evolved into BI, and then if that data got really, very large, you then had an HBC cluster, would which basically analyze a lot of that data for you, and show you trends and things. That would then tell you, you know what, these are my customers, this is how many times they are frequent. But, now it's moving more towards machine learning and deep learning as well. So, as the data gets larger and larger, we're seeing datas becoming larger, not just by social media, but your traditional computational frameworks, your traditional applications and others. We're finding that data is also growing at the edge, so by 2020, about 20 billion devices are going to wake up at the edge and start generating data. So, now, Internet data is going to look very small over the next three, four years, as the edge data comes up. So, you actually need to now start thinking of machine learning and deep learning a lot more. So, you asked the question, how do you see that evolving? So, you see an RDBMS traditional SQL evolving to BI. BI then evolves into either an HBC or hadoop. Then, from HBC and hadoop, what do you do next? What you do next is you start to now feed predictive analytics into machine learning kind of solutions, and then once those predictive analytics are there, then you really, truly start thinking about the full deep learning frameworks. >> Right, well and clearly like the data in motion. I think it's funny, we used to make decisions on a sample of data in the past. Now, we have the opportunity to take all the data in real time and make those decisions with Kafka and Spark and Flink and all these crazy systems that are comin' to play. Makes Hadoop look ancient, tired, and yesterday, right? But, it's still valid, right? >> A lot of customers are still paying. Customers are using it, and that's where we feel we need to simplify the complex for our customers. That's why we announced our Machine Learning Ready Bundle and our Deep Learning Ready Bundle. We announced it with Intel and Nvidia together, because we feel like our customers either go to the GPU route, which is your accelerator's route. We announced-- You were talking to Ravi, from our server team, earlier, where he talked about the C4140, which has the quad GPU power, and it's perfect for deep learning. But, with Intel, we've also worked on the same, where we worked on the AI software with Intel. Why are we doing all of this? We're saying that if you thought that RDBMS was difficult, and if you thought that building a hadoop cluster or HBC was a little challenging and time consuming, as the customers move to machine learning and deep learning, you now have to think about the whole stack. So, let me explain the stack to you. You think of a compute storage and network stack, then you think of-- The whole eternity. Yeah, that's right, the whole eternity of our data center. Then you talk about our-- These frameworks, like Theano, Caffe, TensorFlow, right? These are new frameworks. They are machine learning and deep learning frameworks. They're open source and others. Then you go to libraries. Then you go to accelerators, which accelerators you choose, then you go to your operating systems. Now, you haven't even talked about your use case. Retail use case or genomic sequencing use case. All you're trying to do is now figure out TensorFlow works with this accelerator or does not work with this accelerator. Or, does Caffe and Theano work with this operating system or not? And, that is a complexity that is way more complex. So, that's where we felt that we really needed to launch these new solutions, and we prelaunched them here at Super Computing, because we feel the evolution of HBC towards AI is happening. We're going to start shipping these Ready Bundles for machine learning and deep learning in first half of 2018. >> So, that's what the Ready Solutions are? You're basically putting the solution together for the client, then they can start-- You work together to build the application to fix whatever it is they're trying to do. >> That's exactly it. But, not just fix it. It's an outcome. So, I'm going to go back to the retailer. So, if you are the CEO of the biggest retailer and you are saying, hey, I just don't want to know who buys from me, I want to now do predictive analytics, which is who buys chips and beer, but who can I sell more things to, right? So, you now start thinking about demographic data. You start thinking about payroll data and other datas that surround-- You start feeding that data into it, so your machine now starts to learn a lot more of those frameworks, and then can actually give you predictive analytics. But, imagine a day where you actually-- The machine or the deep learning AI actually tells you that it's not just who you want to sell chips and beer to, it's who's going to buy the 4k TV? You're makin' a lot of presumptions. Well, there you go, and the 4k-- But, I'm glad you're doin' the 4k TV. So, that's important, right? That is where our customers need to understand how predictive analytics are going to move towards cognitive analytics. So, this is complex but we're trying to make that complex simple with these Ready Solutions from machine learning and deep learning. >> So, I want to just get your take on-- You've kind of talked about these three things a couple times, how you delineate between AI, machine learning, and deep learning. >> So, as I said, there is an evolution. I don't think a customer can achieve artificial intelligence unless they go through the whole crawl walk around space. There's no shortcuts there, right? What do you do? So, if you think about, Mastercard is a great customer of ours. They do an incredible amount of transactions per day, (laughs) as you can think, right? In millions. They want to do facial recognitions at kiosks, or they're looking at different policies based on your buying behavior-- That, hey, Jeff doesn't buy $20,000 Rolexes every year. Maybe once every week, you know, (laughs) it just depends how your mood is. I was in the Emirates. Exactly, you were in Dubai (laughs). Then, you think about his credit card is being used where? And, based on your behaviors that's important. Now, think about, even for Mastercard, they have traditional RDBMS databases. They went to BI. They have high-performance computing clusters. Then, they developed the hadoop cluster. So, what we did with them, we said okay. All that is good. That data that has been generated for you through customers and through internal IT organizations, those things are all very important. But, at the same time, now you need to start going through this data and start analyzing this data for predictive analytics. So, they had 1.2 million policies, for example, that they had to crunch. Now, think about 1.2 million policies that they had to say-- In which they had to take decisions on. That they had to take decisions on. One of the policies could be, hey, does Jeff go to Dubai to buy a Rolex or not? Or, does Jeff do these other patterns, or is Armughan taking his card and having a field day with it? So, those are policies that they feed into machine learning frameworks, and then machine learning actually gives you patterns that they can now see what your behavior is. Then, based on that, eventually deep learning is when they move to next. Deep learning now not only you actually talk about your behavior patterns on the credit card, but your entire other life data starts to-- Starts to also come into that. Then, now, you're actually talking about something before, that's for catching a fraud, you can actually be a lot more predictive about it and cognitive about it. So, that's where we feel that our Ready Solutions around machine learning and deep learning are really geared towards, so taking HBC to then democratizing it, advancing it, and then now helping our customers move towards machine learning and deep learning, 'cause these buzzwords of AIs are out there. If you're a financial institution and you're trying to figure out, who is that customer who's going to buy the next mortgage from you? Or, who are you going to lend to next? You want the machine and others to tell you this, not to take over your life, but to actually help you make these decisions so that your bottom line can go up along with your top line. Revenue and margins are important to every customer. >> It's amazing on the credit card example, because people get so pissed if there's a false positive. With the amount of effort that they've put into keep you from making fraudulent transactions, and if your credit card ever gets denied, people go bananas, right? The behavior just is amazing. But, I want to ask you-- We're comin' to the end of 2017, which is hard to believe. Things are rolling at Dell EMC. Michael Dell, ever since he took that thing private, you could see the sparkle in his eye. We got him on a CUBE interview a few years back. A year from now, 2018. What are we going to talk about? What are your top priorities for 2018? >> So, number one, Michael continues to talk about that our vision is advancing human progress through technology, right? That's our vision. We want to get there. But, at the same time we know that we have to drive IT transformation, we have to drive workforce transformation, we have to drive digital transformation, and we have to drive security transformation. All those things are important because lots of customers-- I mean, Jeff, do you know like 75% of the S&P 500 companies will not exist by 2027 because they're either not going to be able to make that shift from Blockbuster to Netflix, or Uber taxi-- It's happened to our friends at GE over the last little while. >> You can think about any customer-- That's what Michael did. Michael actually disrupted Dell with Dell technologies and the acquisition of EMC and Pivotal and VMWare. In a year from now, our strategy is really about edge to core to the cloud. We think the world is going to be all three, because the rise of 20 billion devices at the edge is going to require new computational frameworks. But, at the same time, people are going to bring them into the core, and then cloud will still exist. But, a lot of times-- Let me ask you, if you were driving an autonomous vehicle, do you want that data-- I'm an Edge guy. I know where you're going with this. It's not going to go, right? You want it at the edge, because data gravity is important. That's where we're going, so it's going to be huge. We feel data gravity is going to be big. We think core is going to be big. We think cloud's going to be big. And we really want to play in all three of those areas. >> That's when the speed of light is just too damn slow, in the car example. You don't want to send it to the data center and back. You don't want to send it to the data center, you want those decisions to be made at the edge. Your manufacturing floor needs to make the decision at the edge as well. You don't want a lot of that data going back to the cloud. (upbeat music) >> Hi, and we're back, I'm Stu Miniman, and this is SilconANGLES production of the Cube, here at DockerCon 2017, Austin, Texas. Happy to have on the program Kiran Kamity, who was CEO of ContainerX which was acquired by Cisco. And you're currently the senior director and head of container products at Cisco. And also joining us is Brad Wong, who is the director of product management at Docker. Gentlemen, thank you so much for joining us. >> Brad: Thanks for having us. [Kiran] Thank you, Stu. >> So Kiran, talk a little bit about ContainerX, you know, bring us back to, why containers, you know why you help start a company with containers, and when to be acquired by a big company like Cisco. >> Yeah, it was actually late 2014 is when Pradeep and I, my co-founder from ContainerX, we started brainstorming about, you know, what do we do in the space and the fact that the space was growing, and my previous company called RingCube, which has sold to Citrix, where we had actually built a container between 2006 and 2010. So we wanted to build a management platform for containers, and it was in a way there was little bit of an overlap with Docker Datacenter, but we were focusing on mostly tendency aspects of it. Bringing in concepts like viamordi rs into containers et cetera. And we were acquired by Cisco about eight months ago now, and the transition in the last eight months has been fantastic. >> Great, and Brad, you're first time on the cube, so give us your background, what brought you to Docker? >> Yeah, so actually before Docker I was at actually, a veteran of Cisco, interestingly enough. Many different ventures in Cisco, most recently I was actually part of the Insieme Networks team, focusing on the software defined networking, and Application Centric Infrastructure. Obviously I saw a pretty trend in the infrastructure space, that the future of infrastructure is being led by applications and developers. With that I actually got to start digging around with Docker quite a lot, found some good interest, and we started talking, and essentially that's how I ended up at Docker, to look at our partner ecosystem, how we can evolve that. Two years ago now, actually. >> I think two years ago Docker networking was a big discussion point. Cisco's been a partner there, but bring us up to speed if you would, both of you, on where you're engaging, on the engineering side, customer side, and the breadth and depth of what you're doing. >> You're right, two years ago, networking was in quite a different place. We kicked it off with acquiring a company back then called SocketPlane, which helped us really define-- >> Yeah and we know actually, ---- and ----, two alums, actually I know those guys, from the idea to starting the company, to doing acquisition was pretty quick for you and for them. >> Right, and we felt that we really needed to bring on board a good solid networking DNA into the company. We did that, and they helped us define what a successful model would be for networking which is why they came up with things like the container networking model, and live network, which then actually opened the door for our partners to then start creating extensions to that, and be able to ride on top of that to offer more advanced networking technologies like Contiv for example. >> Contiv was actually an open source project that was started within Cisco, even before the container was acquisitioned. Right after the acquisition happened, that team got blended into our team and we realized that there were some really crown jewels in Contiv that we wanted to productize. We've been working with Docker for the last six months now trying to productize that, and we went from alpha to beta to g a. Now Contiv is g a today, and it was announced in a blog post today, and it's actually 100% open-source networking product that Cisco TAC and Cisco advanced services have offered commercial support and services support. It's actually a unique moment, because this is the fist 100% open-source project that Cisco TAC has actually offered commercial support for, so it's a pretty interesting milestone I think. >> I think also with that, we also have it available on Docker store as well. It's actually the first Docker networking plug-in that it's been certified as well. We're pretty also happy to have that on there as well. >> Yeah. >> Anything else for the relationship we want to go in beyond those pieces? >> We also saw that there was a lot of other great synergies between the two companies as well. The first thing we wanted to do was to look at how we can also make it a lot better experience for joint customers to get Docker up and running, Docker Enterprise Edition up and running on infrastructure, specifically on Cisco infrastructure, so Cisco UCS. So we also kicked off a series of activities to test and validate and document how Docker Enterprise Edition can run on Cisco UCS, Nexus platforms, et cetera. We went ahead with that and a couple months later we brought out, jointly, to our Cisco validated designs for Docker Enterprise Edition. One on Cisco UCS infrastructure alone, and the other one jointly with NetApp as well, with the FlexPod Solution. So we're also very very happy with that as well. >> Great. Our community I'm sure knows the CVD's from what they are out there. UCS was originally designed to be the infrastructure for virtualized environments. Can you walk me through, what other significant differences there or anything kind of changing to move to containers versus what UCS for virtualized environment. >> The goal with that, UCS is esentially considered a premium kind of infrastructure server infrastructure for our customers. Not only can they run virtual environments today, but our goal is as containers become mainstreamed, containers evolved to being a first-class citizen alongside VM. We have to provide our customers with a solution that they need. And a turnkey solution from a Cisco standpoint is to take something like a Docker stack, or other stacks that our customer stopped, such as Kubernetes or other stacks as well, and offer them turnkey kind of experience. So with Docker Data Center what we have done is the CVD that we've announced so far has Docker Data Center, and the recipe provides an easy way for customers to get started with USC on Docker Data Center so that they get that turnkey experience. And with the MTA program that was announced, today at the key note. So that allows Cisco and Docker to work even more closely together to have not just the products, but also provide services to ensure that customers can completely sort of get started very very easily with support from advanced services and things like that. >> Great, I'm wondering if you have any customer examples that you can talk through. If you can't talk about a specific, logo, maybe you can talk about. Or if there are key verticals that you see that you're engaging first, or what can you share? >> We've been working joint customer evals, actually a couple of them. Once again I don't think we can point out the names yet. We haven't fully disclosed, or cleared it with their Prs Definitely into financials. Especially the online financials, a significant company that we've been working with jointly that has actually adopted both Contiv, and is actually seeing quite a lot of value in being able to take Docker, and also leverage the networking stack that Contiv provides. And be able to not just orchestrate networking policies for containers, but the other thing that they want to do is to have those same policies be able to run on cloud infrastructure, like EWS for example. So they obviously see that Docker is a great platform to be enable their affordability between on premises and also public cloud. But at the same time be able to leverage these kind of tools that makes that transition, and makes that move a lot easier so they don't have to re-think their security networking policies all over again. That's been actually a pretty used case I thought of the joint work that we did together with Contiv. >> Some of the customers that we've been talking to in fact we have one customer that I don't think I'm supposed say the name just yet, but we've drollled it out, has drolled out Contiv with the Docker on time. In five production data centers already. And these are the kind of customers that actually take to advanced networking capabilites that Contiv offers so that they can comprehensive L2 networking, L3 networking. Their monitoring pools that they currently use will be able to address the containers, because the L2, the L3 networking capabilities allows each container to have an IP address that is externally addressable, so that the current monitoring tools that you use for VMs et cetera can completely stay relevant, and be applicable in the container world. If you have an ACI fabric that continues to work with containers. So those are some of the reasons why these customers seem to like it. >> Kiran, you're relatively new into Cisco, and you were a software company. Many people they still think of Cisco as a networking company. I've heard people derogatory it's like, "Oh they made hardware define networking when they rolled out some of this stuff." Tell us about, you talk about an open source project that you guys are doing. I've talked to Lou Tucker a number of times. I know some of the software things you guys are doing. Give us your viewpoint as to your new employer, and how they might be different than people think of as the Cisco that we've known for decades. >> Cisco is, has of course it has, you know, several billion dollars of revenue coming in from hardware and infrastructure. And networking and security have been the bread and the butter for the company for many many years now But as the world moves to Cloud-Native becoming a first class citizen, the goal is really to provide complete solutions to our customers. And if you think of complete solutions, those solutions include things like networking, thing like security. Including analytics, and complete management platforms. At the same time, at the end of the day, the customers want to come to peace with the fact that this is a multi-cloud world Customers have data centers on premises, or on hosted private cloud environments. They have workloads that are running on public clouds. So with products like cloud center, our goal is to make sure that whatever they, the applications that they have, can be orchestrated across these multiple clouds. We want to make sure that the pain points the customers have around deploying whole solutions include easy set-up of products on infrastructure that they have, and that includes partnerships like UCS, or running on ACI or Nexus. We want to make sure that we give that turnkey experience to these customers. We want to make sure that those workloads can be moved across and run across these different clouds. That's where products like cloud center come in. We want to make sure that these customers have top grade analytics, which is completely software. That's were the app dynamics acquisition comes in. And we want to make sure that we provide that turnkey experience with support in terms of services. With our massive services organization, partners, et cetera. We view this as our job is to provide our customers what they need in terms of the end solution that they're looking for. And so it's not just hardware, it's just a part of it. Software, services, et cetera, complimented. >> Alright, Brad last question that I have for you in the keynote yesterday, I couldn't count how many times the word ecosystem was used. I think it was loud and clear that everybody there I think it was like, you know, Docker will not be successful unless it's partners are successful, kind of vice versa. When you look at kind of the product development piece of things, how does that resonate with you and the job that you're doing? >> We basically are seeing Docker become more of a, more and more of a platform as evidenced by yesterdays keynote. Every platform, the only way that platform's going to be successful is if we can do great, we have great options for our partners, like Cisco, to be able to integrate with us on multiple different levels, not just on one place. The networking plug-in is just one example. Many many other places as well Yesterday we announced two new open source initiatives. Lennox kit and also the movi project. You can imagine that there's probably lots of great places where partners like Cisco can actually play in there, not just only in the service fees, but maybe also in things like IOT as well, which is also a fast-emerging place for us to be. And all the way up until day two type of monitoring, type of environment as well where we think there's a lot of great places where once again, options like app dynamics, tetration analytics can fit in quite nicely with how do you take applications that have been migrated or modernized into containers, and start really tracking those using a common tool set. So we think that's really really good opportunities for our ecosystem partners to really innovate in those spaces, and to differentiate as well. >> Kiran, I want to give you the final word, take-aways that you want the users here, and those out watching the show to know about, you know, Cisco, and the Docker environment. >> I want to let everybody know that Cisco is not just hardware. Our goal is to provide turnkey complete solutions and experiences to our customers. And as they walk through this journey of embracing Cloud-Native workloads, and containerized workload there's various parts of the problem, that include all the way from hardware, to running analytics, to networking, to security, and services help, and Cisco as a company is here to offer that help, and make sure that the customers can walk away with turnkey solutions and experiences. >> Kiran and Brad, thank you so much for joining us.
