One of our cube alumni, Rawlinson Rivera, who's the CTO of the global field at Cohesive E. Thanks for joining us again. My pleasure, man. Always excited when we get to talk to Ah, customer is a customer and a service provider. Brock Marie, who's the chief technologist at? Whoa, >> Correct. Thanks for having. >> All right. So we're gonna get Tau Whoa in a second, cause really want to dig in an interesting name? I'm sure you guys have some fun with that, I would hope. But Rawlinson, first of all, you know Veum world always big celebration back in San Francisco celebration. But 10 years of the Cube to you know, what's it all mean to you? >> Amazing. The fact that I've been here a couple of times now it's great. It's a good, great way to put a stamp on my existence. He would be able to >> Yeah, you know, amazing ecosystem and lots of ah ah, as we said, we just had Jerry chain on. It's the deviant where? Mafia. I'm sitting here with two former VM where employees do so even when they've left their still tight with a lot of going on there. All right, Brock, you've been to this event Ah, a few times before we get into Whoa, Just tell us, You know, what does the world mean to you? >> Soviet world is obviously it's a huge networking event. You get Thio not only see your peers, but also other players in the industries and be able to evaluate their products and see what they have. >> All right, so tell us a little bit about Whoa. >> So what dot com was founded in 2013 we ah, tout ourselves as a cyber secure cloud platform. Ah, we've done more than just stand up TVM where bits for hosting we've actually integrated some threat protection and some network defense items. Uh, around that infrastructure. >> All right, give us a little bit of the Brett. You know, how many locations? Verticality. All that kind of. >> So our headquarters is in Hollywood, Florida. We have a data center presence in Miami, a data center presence in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and one and switch LV in Las Vegas. So that gives us coverage over the United States. All >> right, I've toward one of those facilities. You probably amazing facility. So, uh, >> yeah, well, can you tell us a little bit about what was business? And I'm in particular interested in being a service provider in 2019 right? A lot of noise about the big public clouds. But as the folks here at B M, where no, there's trillions of dollars flowing through a nightie ecosystem that, you know, some of it's going to the public cloud. But there's lots of need for service providers. Providing specialty service's or hands on service is or I'm kind of curious. What is your business? What is your business and like, how does it intersect with data, Which is where we're getting to hear? >> Yeah, absolutely. So with our focus on compliance, that's really one of the major differentiators from us with the hyper scale Er's or the Big three is a lot of people like to call them, um that gives us the ability also to tune and make sure that their workloads are precise and running the way that they want with the security models around them. Uh, plus, it's the you know you got, you could reach out and you can contact us. We pick up the phone, we support all of our customers. Uh, we love to go above and beyond and make sure that they're happy. So we want to kind of give them that that boutique type feel and be able to provide. The service is out. >> We're talking verticals like, >> yes. Oh, health care is a big one. Obviously, um and then there's, you know, huge requirements around that for data protection and ah, data isolation and so forth. Um and also, you know, on the cyber security side, cyber scan the new release from these guys is something that we're definitely foaming at the mouth to get at it. Something that we're ready to put into play because it's it's a value, add back to our customers and having their product in that position gives us an advantage, >> right? Rawlinson. He teed you up. But you know, in general, you know, we know where cohesive He has played in the enterprise on what's been happening. A lot of the environment gives a little bit of the landscape for the service providers and where cohesively plays. We know that that's you know, it's been a great no only customer, but almost a channel for many technology in the space for a number of years. Well, you >> know, we have our own sort of like division within the Coast, just with sports writer of market. What we doing, we're enabling them to provide their customers with the value that we gave our enterprise customers already so opening up more than just the backup, right? So one of the things that rock mentioned is this new capability. Have a performing scans for vulnerability scans within the systems. When have you ever been able to do that on something that just sits there and it's just an insurance policy in the past. Now we can give you the ability to provide your customers ability to look into their data whether there have a vulnerability or not in place and tell him before they do it. Did you want to restore this? You wanna protect it with X amount of vulnerabilities. You want to fix it before you do it, And that kind of level of service is being provided. It delivers in immense value to customers everywhere. All >> right, So is this the first product that uses a few city or have you been using other >> s? So we obviously we dove in headfirst with data protection? Um, our previous data protection product wasn't living up to, ah, up to its claims. And that sparked us to go out and start looking at other vendors. And it actually happened at the end world. A few years ago, I came across Cohesive E, uh, worked with their guys. We did a POC. Um, we attacked some of our major pain points right off the bat, and cohesive handled it without any problems. >> I'm kind of curious. So we're talking about a second secondary storage platform. You know, uh, backup is is a use of it, But once you live in the world now we don't. We still put something, the things on tape, but okay, the bits are live there on a disk somewhere, and back them up. So as an example of this for the security scans, some of this ransomware stuff can lie dormant for months before turning on. So it's not a matter of like, Oh, I've just restored the backup from last week. You may have to go search through the all your your your checkpoints. Right. So that's an example of how having a secondary storage platform really enables a lot of security. So that's my with my understanding. Several out, maybe. Tee you up. Can you talk about data? The secondary storage data platform in general And security is one aspect. Data protection is another. I don't know. >> I mean, that's right. Yeah. The thing about what we do is that we as a data management platform, which was kind of getting falling into that there's many fastest to managing with data. We started with the data protection piece. Now we adding other value to the areas which is just pointed out. There's a lot of dark data that you don't get to see because of description of silos, and >> I >> don't really use that Now. We have the ability to provide that value that everyone else on the service provider business can leverage because now they have. Like you said, I have to go look through all these different generations of that protection job that I'm doing now. We do that instantaneous. We do that at the core. So now you're able to identify and report on that and be able to correct it before you have to go through that process, which is which is incredible. Now, if that's on the data protection side, we also have the ability of using. You can use cohesive as a file if they want to do that. Now we're talking to live information that can access the same suite of capability and tools, are there and can report the same way. >> Yeah, if I can add to that to one of the one of the really cool features that I that I like that Cohee City does is when you're using filer service is and things like that. You still have the ability to protect that data as well. So you can replicate those snapshots out to other locations and so forth. So ah, we found that was, ah, pretty good benefit for us. We have a configuration management platform that we ended up putting amount on one of those servers, and we want to protect that in our other location. And this is our own internal operations. So we leverage the platform is well, we protect that data by replicating into another Geo >> Brock. Connect the dots for us. We understand us pain points. But what is this colucci city solutions that you're using mean for your ultimate end user customers >> Confidence, That's, you know, knowing that when that backup report comes in and hits their inbox, that all of those jobs are gonna be successful. And ultimately, what that turns into is when they need that data back, they need to restore it. It's going to be there for them, all right? >> Anything you'd add about the impact on the customers when you're working with service providers, any kind of broader discussion of the service writers. >> I mean, it's great the things that we do because now we're not only typically we enable our enterprise customers to do this. Now we're neighbors and our service providers to enable their customers to do that as well. And you know what? We just we just in the background. It's their business, right? They're the ones who are providing the service, making a service for for the customer based on what they need. And it is good for us to kind of enable that and let them do what they need to. They would just make money, make money, protect their money and make more money. >> Brock, I'm kind of curious you and your your customers, right? A lot of talking vigil, transformation at agility. We've all gotta make money. We've all gotta move fast, and I'm guessing you know it again. In an ecosystem where there are very big players and very small players, part of you still have to move fast, and your customers expect you to be delivering News Service's and reliable service is et cetera. Can you maybe just talk a little bit about kind of what your customers are looking for? Uh, you know how the relationship goes with, Maybe with a with a provider like like you have a team And will he see building healthy? You know, how fast can you turn on the service is how fast is that ramp up in? Maybe with the >> Sure so. And it's funny because I've actually been having some other conversations on how we can improve the existing workflow. Ah, but the workflow has been, uh, not, um, we've had to re architect a couple of network items to be able to, ah, to facilitate external backups. For example, being a service provider, I don't just back up the EMS within my environment. I backup PM's in customers environments as well. So laying the foundation to be ableto have these. Ah, these units replicate between each other, eases that path and and again it comes down to revenue. The faster I can get that box coming in, the faster that I can realize revenue on the product. >> A lot of discussion in this show about some of the future things you know, the emerging, where is talking about container ization and building communities into Evie's fear, talking about their multi cloud connectivity that they're having. I know the City's got a strong play partnering with all the public cloud environment. Give us look out as toe. How does that impact your business? Where do you see that going from your roadmap standpoint? >> Absolutely. So, uh, with with the cohesive platform, especially with the, uh, the big three hyper scale er's, for example, we're actually looking at a way to put our long term storage out on that out on those service is we'll keep our short term storage internal or on Prem wherever the customers scenario might be. But we want to leverage that that long term storage so that we don't have to manage that data over a seven year period. We do manage it. We'll ever do your guys tools to be able to do it, but it's in a hyper scaler. I don't need to worry about it. >> And to add to that were also as a Zvi, Ammar moves alone and catches on the wave of the Cuban. Any journalist after we also do that already so we can actually provide protection of name spaces for for the kubernetes environment, something you'll start seeing, you'll see we released very soon. So we already given the short stories provides the ability to compete with the hyper scale is providing those newer cloud Native service is they need to be. You have available for them to know we're gonna make that would enable that for everyone. Still haven't we would offer it universal. >> Well, actually, that that brings up a question Brock hour in terms of being cloud native. Either you, you guys spending up more service is more cloud native APS or your customers. And I'm not sure if they're building off if they're bringing off the shelf APS to you or if they're building custom maps. I mean, where do you see the evolution of this hole field in terms of Dev Ops and Cloud Native? >> Definitely. So Cloud Native is ah, is a very interesting architecture play, especially with the micro service's and dynamically building machines on the fly. And things like that is very, very exciting. Very intriguing. Um, our workloads tend to be more traditional vm type workloads. Uh, I have been having conversations with customers, technical groups. Hey, you guys should start looking at Micro service. Is this is something you guys can improve your guys. Your service delivery with um, we haven't gotten there yet. We're using some container service is internally for our own operations, but externally, we're still trying to, you know, part of the digital transformation. Work with your customers to provide them >> solutions. All right, Brock, when you know one of the things we come to this show, we always get. Okay, great. Here's where we are today. Here's where we going tomorrow. Usually have a wish list, you know, we know service fighters. Yes. If you could make it a little cheaper, you know, we need to be able to pass those margins, you know, down to our customer. What? What's on your wish list? What would make you know your company's life easier? >> Ah, well, cohesive. He's done a very good job of that already, so ah, again, you know, having confidence in your backups and being able to sleep at night is definitely huge. Um, so on my wish list, I like the direction they're going with the integration and, ah, lot of the workbench products and so forth. Honestly, I don't have a ton of wish list. I'm more sitting back watching what these guys are gonna come out with because cyber scans, one that actually came out of left field for me. And, um, this >> is awesome. What I think is interesting about these these architecture is that there are this this app layer that they that they're now introducing that Yes, there's kubernetes there, but it's a lot of APS. Data service is that are very close to the data. I don't know what What do you guys have in store? What are you talking about here at the show in terms of new service is because it's now you just containerized it. You, Doc, arise it and stick it in your thing and your your plane. And it's there on the on the device that >> the focus for us has basically continue to deliver value on the platform that people only thought it was data protection. It's way more than that. He has he comes availability scanners being one of them, but also opening the platform for customers and cell service providers. You know what you need. You know what service? If you need to create a developed for what you need to do, do it and put it on us. Do not move the date away from where where is safely stored, located, bring the application to it. That eliminates risks of, you know, data leakage and all these kinds of things that you have a secure, centralized, scalable everything you want. It's all in place. >> Yeah, I think it's a great point. You know, when when the company first came out, it's like, Okay, well, here's the product at the day. But Mohit is building a platform that is his history, and that's not what he's doing. And I know that's what excited a lot of people in the early days. And as you said, your data management platform now. So we know we're now actually are, at least at the early stages of where the company is going with the overall solution. >> Your moments very methodical. He decided to go one way, one thing at a time, right? We're not a Swiss army knife. We're not gonna Well, the ocean we come out, we master the one thing that was the most painful so far. Data protection. We fixed back up, and now we're going to give you the rest of what you get from the platform after we master that. All >> right? I want to give you the final words. You've been going through this journey now for a few years when you talk to your peers, What advice would you give than anything you've learned along the way? Is that all? It's great, But boy, I wish I could have shortcut. Certain things were, you know, planned something a little bit different. You know what learning is gonna share? >> Eso definitely plant plan your deployments. You know, there's there's some new features and new items that are coming out. But, you know, again, one of the great things about you he city you have a virtual ization of the E series. Go in there and break it on the V E Siri's and then deployed on your hardware. >> All right, >> Brock and Rawlinson Thank you so much for joining us. I'm your host, Rebecca Knight, along with my cohost, Stu Miniman. We're joined by Rawlinson Rivera. He is the Chief Technology Officer, global field, at Cohesity. Thanks so much for coming on the show, Rawlinson. >> My pleasure, my pleasure. >> So, I want to hear from you what you're hearing from customers. This is obviously your first time at Microsoft Ignite. What are you hearing from them? What are they telling you? What are their challenges they're facing? Lay it on us. >> I mean the reception we've got here's been incredible. Everyone's kind of really looking into some of the things we're able to do with regards to disaster recovery, beyond some of the normal backup stuff that we're known for. But we got a chance to talk to a couple of executives, CIOs here where from different countries, different continents too where they've been actually very excited about some of the things that we can do, overcoming some of the challenges, in particular around disaster recovery and data mobility are some of the things we can actually do today very well. So, we're having, I've been having pretty good amount of conversations with respect to that and the reception's been incredible. >> So, we're talking about the recovery. What is a CIO, what keeps the CIO up at night in terms of that? What is he or she saying to you about that? >> For some time we've been talking about how we need to be able to leverage a public cloud and a cloud that kind of for use them as a form of disaster recovery, but it's always been a challenge to do that, moving data from one place to another from your private data center to a public data center and maintaining that sort of continuity and the ability to maintain business going after that happens. We're able to now produce a solution that can do that, where these guys can actually validated without having to actually have an actual distaster recovery to see if it really works. And when you have, when you can do that these sort of executives are like, okay I have a better way to sleep now. These are some of the things that I can now go to bed and safely know that if I have a failure, I have the solutions in place with enough of an ecosystem that allows me to come all the way across to my public cloud and kind of keep things going as it should be. >> Rawlinson, I think you bring up some really good points customers now have, they're living in a multi-cloud world, so they've got a lot of different tools out there. Making these choices aren't easy, it's like, well, they've got to choose to find their providers, they've got their existing data center, they're doing stuff as asked. We've seen Cohesity at a lot of these shows now and especially Microsoft plays across this broad spectrum so maybe give us a little bit more how important we know data is the lifeblood of companies, but how are things different from them today than where they might have been a couple of years ago to be able to take advantage of these new things? >> Well, Stu we've been at this for several years, sort of several different sort of companies since we've been around, but,when you think about the fact that there's so many different solutions, different silos, different. Those are probably the most, one of the biggest challenges, the biggest problems that exist in that world, when we have that many components in play, there's that much more risk to introduce into that sort of solution. What we're able to do now is basically consolidating, collapsing all these different silos and delivering a solution that can actually be natively integrated with the cloud, providing mobility, the necessary replication capabilities in order to move the data from one place to another. It eliminates sort of the risk, give you a risk adverse type of approach for DR, which is something that everyone needs in this particular case. When you are having a disaster recovery, risk is not something else you need to worry about when you want to come back up from a failure in that particular case and that's one of the things that we actually introduce and provide, were the particular solutions. >> Yeah, it's a conversation we've been having with Microsoft all week. Trust, Microsoft's a trusted brand out there. >> Absolutely, absolutely. >> We've had them forever. Maybe give us a little insight on what you hear from the Microsoft customers, you and I, we've, certain other shows we're much more familiar with, this has a little bit of a different vibe than-- >> Absolutely. >> Some other shows. Maybe, what are you hearing? >> So here, obviously, being able to work within the Microsoft ecosystem, being able to utilize and provide a right solution for the right application of the use, sequel shared point of exchange, not only about protecting their information, their data, but now how can I move it from on-prem to my actual Azure cloud. Being able to have those capabilities seamlessly without having to worry about anything else is something that customers really worry about now. How can we actually take your on-prem data, regardless of what infrastructure, virtual infrastructure resides on and put it on my private or my public Azure cloud. By being able to do that successfully without ruining and changing the behavior and the security of these applications is key and that's some of the things we can actually do very well seamlessly without having to do any afterthought, not having to introduce multiple components to do that and keeping everything simple and safe, which is actually what every customer wants. >> As CTO, global field, your role is really about defining and communicating Cohesity's vision and strategy. Two questions, number one, has Microsoft done that effectively at Ignite for its own products and strategy? And number two, when it is the Cohesity Ignite conference or you'll have some other za-za name after it, what do you want participants and attendees to come away with? >> What we look for is basically I think Microsoft has done a very good job with us here. We've also been able to sort of come into their show for the first time and sort of showcase our capabilities and the reception has been incredible, right? I think our session here was packed. People were just coming around the booth looking at some of our capabilities. For in the future, whenever we come up with, when Mohit decides to have the Mohit show somewhere else, right? I think it will be, it should be similar. It should be about an ecosystem, our customers, all of the folks want to come and see how we can, how we grow. We are in the midst of developing and growing our own ecosystem and some of the things we're doing and bringing forward and you'll see that come about, right? That's the same sort of a strategy we want to kind of maintain and it'll be a great thing for everyone to see and sort of come and communicate and experience and not just our own stuff, right? Because it's not about us all the time. We provide a specific solution and specific capabilities, but when we turn into an ecosystem where everyone comes in and plays into it and we're having a very tight partnership with Microsoft, but we want to grow that and eventually get to more things than we actually do today. >> Yeah you bring up an interesting point, we know how important ecosystems are especially, it's a software world. I can't do it all myself even though, we, it's interesting we had one Microsoft guest on and he talked about for certain ad solutions, they're going to vertically integrate all the way down to that end device, Microsoft will do end to end, but then you have things like the open-data initiative. They know when you talk about data, of course Cohesity heavily involved in data needs to go a lot of places. The open-data initiative, when you get companies like Adobe and SAP and Microsoft standing up and saying I want to be able to take that data and leverage it across these various solutions. Curious, do you have any feedback on that initiative, that ecosystem, and how does Cohesity look at making sure that you're open and work across all the solutions that your customers need? >> Look, we know very well that it's not our world and everybody is, wants to live in it, right? So the whole point is about ecosystem is very important, I can tell you that within our engineered organization, Mohit himself we're looking into how do we provide the ability for our platform to be consumable, not just by us, but by everyone within our ecosystem within in the industry. If there's a particular application that you as a customer use, you may want to use it on our platform to leverage our capabilities for your information. So these kind of initiatives are already in play to be announced soon. So we, for us, it's what we need to do, right? It's actually, given the customer, not only are the capabilities of our platform, but choice, 'cause we're always not going to be able to deliver and do some of the things that other applications are dedicated to do more effectively. We might be able to do it to a certain degree, but we want to give the customers the ultimate experience, the ultimate accessibility, to their data, to their information, which is, at the end of the day, it is what we say today, it's the new oil, right? Which is, that needs to be actually properly mind leveraged and protected and utilized and accessed. Without it, you'll be in some sort of a limited sort of approach within your business. >> Sutton Nudella was up on the main stage talking about his company's culture and about the idea of being a learn-it-all, not a know-it-all. How would you describe Cohesity's culture? >> Well I got to tell you, it's tough. Because we have a series of geniuses working in this company and we're small, but they guy at the helm is obviously the brainiac, I would say. But our culture is to basically, we're very receptive, we believe in really staying humble and letting everyone sort of have a place to play. Open minded as always. A lot of things that happened at Cohesity happened in a short period of time because the way in which we listen to customers, the way in which we listen to the actual engineers themselves, and we're very customer-focused. A customer could come in with the right amount, with the right demand, in the right amount of time, in the right place, and we will basically deliver that specifically for them very quickly. And that sort of culture, it's important not only for us, for the business, but also for within the teams within themselves because everyone seems they're collaborative, everyone seems to be part of something that's going on and they can contribute to the, to what we're doing, which is changing some of the things that are actually within the data center, we're really pushing the needle forward and changing some of the things there. >> How do you maintain the culture? Because you are growing so fast, you are hiring so many new people. How do you make sure everyone is on the same page and pulling together? >> I got to tell you, the people that we bring in, it's not about the skills, right? Skills is one thing and skills is many many and everyone has skills, everyone has something to offer, but one of the things that we look at when we're screening folks to work at Cohesity, is how do they going to work? How do they behave? What are their, you know, what are their passions? That's just as important as the skills that they're bringing. Because one of the things that they'll do is that they may not know the technology and the things we're working on specifically there, but they're willing to learn and when it's collaborative with the team, and kind of move that on and get better and better as we go, that's very very important to us. >> Alright, Rawlinson, we talk about the speed of things changing. Let's look out. We're back talking with Cohesity, Microsoft Ignite 2019. What are we talking about with Cohesity? >> Well, it will be much more than what we so far see now, right? So, obviously we have, we came into the industry with this particular process or approach of data protection. Obviously, it's beyond that. So some of the things that I see us in how the future will be is that secondary storage, secondary data and applications, to be honest, it will be much more interesting and a lot better, in a sense, than the traditional storage function it is. Storage is about feats and speeds, I want performance, this and that, but a part that we play is what to do with your information, where to put it, where to place it, where to access it, process, compliance, who can get to this point. We're looking at information in a way that, we're calling it private, public clouds, they would be, probably, a primary and a secondary private, public cloud, for different purposes, being able to not only provide access to information, but also providing compliance, reporting, out of, I mean, instantaneously. We can no longer manage information or data in the speed that it's growing from a human perspective. There's just no way we can keep track of that. The result of that is a lot of risks, data leakage, all the problems that you see in the world, we are out to actually fix that, overcome that, right? When we can provide a solution where things are now seamlessly happening within the environment, you don't have to worry about all these different things. Microsoft plays a big part of that. Microsoft Office 365, all the things, all of the information that's stored and honed within the Microsoft ecosystem and their applications, we are specifically looking to make sure that is as seamless as possible so that now we're dealing with access my information, process information, get information where I need to go, without humans probably having to touch it. The more human touches we have, the more the risk. We want to make things that are more automated, accessible, utilize some of this AI machine learning, so that some of these things that actually happen much more effectively with less risk. >> I want to hear about customers. We've actually talked with a lot of Cohesity customers this week. We've had Brown University on, we have HKS later today, Lynn Lucas mentioned some examples of at Penn and at Burke. What else, even if you don't name names, I want to hear about the kinds of, the kinds of results you're hearing and the kind of ROI that customers are getting from Cohesity products and services. >> I mean, I've talked to so many in different verticals, whether it be, finance, medical, even, there's so many of them and everyone is really excited about the fact that when it comes to RI, one of the things that we're, like, out of the box, when everyone thinks of Cohesity, they look at what we can do, it's just, from an operations perspective, what we can reduce enough in that action. Not only from a software, hardware perspective what they're doing, but when you think about operations, we simplify operations so that when it comes to operations and efficiencies, we want to mitigate the risk in that process and they see it immediately, which by the way, whenever you introduce any new solution to any infrastructure, to any business, the biggest challenge is not the technology, it is how am I going to take that into my operating procedures and consume it as one? Because, listen, we can double click and we'll have people do that for days without a problem, but how do we do that and come into your systems effectively so that you can consume me, the smaller piece, with the larger part of the infrastructure, which is not the main point yet. We're able to do that very effectively. We come in and we complement the rest of the infrastructure that you have and we come into your consumption model. It's not about my interface, it's not about my server's catalog, we come into your service catalog. Whenever you talk to these guys and you see that, whenever I bring that up front, it not only I talk to them, I show it to them, they're like that's what I'm looking for. And showing it to folks, it's a lot different than when you show a logical diagram and tell them, oh this is what we can do, no, no, no. This is what we can do, this is your world, when we're in in your operating procedures. >> Yeah, you bring up a definitely something we agree and talk about on theCUBE a lot, which is the technology piece oftentimes is the easy part and we know technology's hard, but it's how do I change that mindset and the pace of changes so fast something I we've talked about for a number of years and I have a slightly different take on it now is, like, well, geez, how can I keep up? And the answer for me and I'd love your viewpoint on, is like, look, nobody can keep up on everything. What you need to have is you have to have trusted partners, your channel partners are the ones that are going to say, oh hey, I understand in your environment, here are some of the things that can help you because nobody, even I've had the chance to interview some of the smartest people in our industry and they're like, I can't keep up with the pace of innovation inside, so what do you hear from customers as to how they keep up, how they learn about new technologies. Are they more willing to try new vendors and new ways of doing things? Or are they just going to incrementally, wither themselves away to death? >> It is tough. I mean our industry changes, it is sort of the results of our gain, right? So how do we make and help our customers evolve and let them sort of look at what they can keep, try and keep up with. There are some key points here and, actually, we play in a world that our specific plays around the data, right? So when it comes to that, no one wants to put their data at risk, no one wants to expose a new tool to sort of, maybe, expose some sort of a leakage or a problem. Our ecosystem, our partnerships, are what with trusted partners within the industry, Microsoft think people of this kind of caliber, where there's trusted, there's trusted advisors, there's several companies already, we come in and we compliment each other, but the point is that we're, we want to deliver something that is not going to expose anyone at risk, but it gives them the opportunity to sort of adapt the portion that they need. One example of that is that we have the ability today when it comes to application portability that I haven't seen before. We've seen a lot of things, for example, in the industry and a lot of solutions for that. Today, we have a very simplistic solution that allows anyone to take their workloads or their application from on-prem to Microsoft Azure seamlessly. One single task, one place. And those are the type of solutions that you would want and become trusted because they're not going to change anything, I can rely on this thing working and coming into a Microsoft Azure cloud and consume it any way I want to do it. >> Rawlinson Rivera, thank you so much for coming on theCUBE. >> My pleasure. >> It was a pleasure having you here. That's the event it's a global conference from investors, bitcoin billionaires and millionaires, as well as entrepreneurs coming to Puerto Rico to discuss the future of Blockchain, the future cryptocurrency, the future of decentral application. Partnering with the island of Puerto Rico, our next guest is Damarius Riviera with Puerto Rico Advantage. And the big story is a lot of people are moving here for either tax advantages or entrepreneurial reasons and Damarius and her team at the Puerto Rico Advantage help set that up. Damarius, welcome to theCube. >> Hola, how are you? >> Thanks for coming on. >> Thanks. >> One of the big rush here is like a gold rush for folks coming in, moving to Puerto Rico but it's hard. You guys provide a service to do that for folks. How fast is it, how does it work? How does the service work? Okay, we're Puerto Rico Advantage came together as me, I'm a local from Puerto Rico and my partners are American from Wisconsin. They're both Act 20 and Act 22 themselves. So when they got here to the island, they took like seven months to find out the opportunity analysis and if the tax incentives work for them. So when they met me, I worked previously in the government before so I know how all of this works and I said let's come with one business that will be a one stop for each client. So when they come to us they get their grants, plus the relocation services for their business and themselves. >> Certainly the incentives right now are really wonderful for business and folks who are building companies and creating wealth. The tax advantages are here. There's been a surge of people coming here. What's it like? What's, how many people are coming through? Was it a lot of volume? You guys busy? Give us some insight into how it's working. >> Yes, a lot of people are coming. They're moving real estate pretty much in San Juan area. It's gone, so the other places like Dorado and Rincon are packed. When I go to the supermarket, everywhere I go it's full of American and people from upstate. And when you ask them where you're from and they will tell you from Puerto Rico. They're already calling themselves Puerto Rican. So it's very exciting and a great opportunity for us. >> One of the things I've been impressed with is the acceptance and the blending of the island folks and people coming in. Take me through an example. Let's just say hypothetically, hypothetically, I wanted to move to Puerto Rico, what do I do? I call you guys up and say hey get me a flat, get me a house. I need security I need a car. Do I need a driver's license? Do I need insurance, I mean what has to happen? Take me through and how do I, and what happens for me? Is it turn key, is it easy? What do you guys do? What do I have to do? Take me through a use case. >> Okay, first when the client calls, if it's interested in Act 20 business, they will tell a little bit about their business and then we can say if their business qualified. Then, we will take them to the CBA and work everything about the grant. It usually takes two week depending on all the info the client gives us and the quickly and I will manage everything in the government agencies. For the residential part, we schedule their meetings when they have kids to the great private schools here. We help them with the real estate, driver's license. They do need driver's licenses. I take them to get their voters ID, everything. We have like a draft, a checklist, with everything they need to qualify for residence, a Puerto Rico resident. And we take them, we make the process very easy for them. >> So they write a big check to you guys, for the service, but you guide them through the entire process? >> Yes, we do. >> So, for individuals, you can do it for individuals and businesses and individuals right? >> Yes. >> Take me through the scenarios. >> For individuals it will be the basic Act 22. So, that one is very simple and we just tell them what they need to do to comply with the 183 days they need to reside here in Puerto Rico to get the benefits for the grants tax incentives. >> So, take me through the business aspect. >> Oh, the business aspect is also very easy. As long as your company gives an export service, it qualifies. So, we even do the, if they need to hire staff, manage their business, everything. We help them with everything. >> And you guys see a lot of business coming from, people that were going to go to the Cayman Islands, or somewhere else, are they coming here? >> Yes, everybody likes because they feel Puerto Rico is part of the United States, but then we don't pay federal taxes so they have that great benefit, so they're moving a lot of the companies here. >> So since the Hurricane obviously there's been a lot of effort in the U.S. and focusing attention on helping Puerto Rico, and there's been stories good and bad, but as the new Blockchain and the Bitcoin cryptocurrency newly minted millionaires and billionaires come in, how has the culture reacted to that? They seem to be open arms. Has it been well received? What's some of the feedback that's been happening here in Puero Rico with the new in migration of folks? >> Yes, it's very well received and it's amazing because this group of the Blockchain just came after Hurricane Maria. So people were amazed like, wow, they're still considering moving here and help the island, even after this big natural disaster. So, it gives hope to a lot of people here and it's helping the island to do a lot of more progress. >> And what's great is the island is first of all beautiful but, with the infrastructure, opportunity to reboot it and reset new infrastructure, all the tech geeks, this is Blockchain, they're like tech nerds. They love the high-speed internet, they want to have the good infrastructure and the schools have now connected Blockchain. I talked to an entrepreneur here two days ago where he's linking all the schools, educational institutions and colleges with Blockchain to create a community. So there's kind of a nerd nation emerging here in Puerto Rico, isn't there? >> Yes, yes, it's amazing that we've been considered for all of that. >> Well thank you for coming on and explaining The Puerto Rican Advantage. Also, her partners are Jennifer Brockman and Angela Brookman. You guys are doing a great service. Thank you for what you do. I think a lot of people that I've talked to really appreciated it. For folks who want to come to Puerto Rico and help out and contribute but also get some real advantages for the business and as an individual. Brought to you by Red Hat. >> Welcome back, I'm your host, Rebecca Knight along with Stu Miniman, my co-host. We are joined by Sandra Rivera, Vice President and general manager Network Platform Groups at Intel. Thanks so much, Sandra. >> Thank you for having me. >> I want to talk about a point you made during your keynote address and you talked about the transformative power of data and just about how data will change the face of so many industries, from healthcare to airlines to the financial services industry. And yet there are so many challenges that companies and developers themselves face in dealing with this avalanche of data. Sifting through it, understanding it, sorting it, chunking it the right way and really understanding what it's saying. Can you talk about the challenges and then also what companies are doing to overcome the challenge? >> It is really at the crux of both challenge and opportunity is what do you do with all the massive amounts of data that is being generated, and I spoke about how an average user really generates or consumes about one and a half gigabytes of data per day, but if you fast forward of what's happening in the rest of the industry, we connect to cars at four terabytes of data per day or connect to planes at five terabytes or a smart factory at one petabyte of data a day. What do you do with all of that because today, much of that goes wasted and unutilized, right? We create these large data lakes and yet, the value creation portion that you need to turn it into something useful and profitable is really challenging. The things that we're doing to address those challenges, collectively with the ecosystem are really building standardized sets of software interfaces and APIs through our contributions and open source and open standards because we do believe that these are problems that are best addressed when you're doing it in community and in parallel and much of the investments that we're making in the underlying ingredient technologies, be it hardware or software, have to be exposed at a much higher level that, for the application developer, they know that there are some tools underneath giving them performance or capabilities that they desire for their customers, but not having to know a lot of those intricacies, so lot of that abstraction work that we do collectively with the ecosystem, and with Red Hat being a great partner of ours in that vein, in that effort, is really to abstract all those complexities and make it easier to onboard the developers and let them innovate and really focus on the value creation portion of the problem statement. >> So do developers now need a new layer of education to get the data? I mean, it could be data science. >> Exactly, well, and a lot you see a lot of the larger corporations hiring in data scientists, but everyone is not going to be a data scientist and everyone's not going to be able to afford one on their payroll, so our job is really to have, again this abstraction capability, but one that takes advantage of the underlying innovations that we invest in, both from a hardware and a software perspective. And then to really try to provide some of that education capability and some of the things that I spoke about are, as part of our community, a community that we call the Builder's Community. In fact, I was trying to get folk to go look at builders.intel.com because you see we have hundreds and hundreds of publications there of solution briefs and technical documents and reference architectures and tip and tricks and techniques for how you can optimize your software to take advantage of all of these innovations underneath instead of doing that trial and error that you would do if you're just starting from ground up and doing it and repeating that same process over and over again. It's really embracing much more of that Dev Ops model, which is new to the networking industry, but very familiar to the IT type developer. >> Sandra, I'm wondering if you can help us connect the dots. I think back to when we started talking about the term big data. One of the terms I loved, it was the bit flip from that all that data is going to be a challenge to, "hey, this is an opportunity for us to do good things." But when you start talking about the evolution now to machine learning, artificial intelligence. Big data, there's so many companies that are like, "we tried these initiatives and over 50% of them "were failing. "We just weren't delivering on the value. "We were investing, but we weren't there." Why will it be different, how is the ecosystem matured, this kind of maturation on the market? >> A lot of it is really about how do you make the access to all of that data look like another compute problem? And we have a lot of compute application developers that are very familiar with the types of software tools and optimization capabilities that we have, not just in the Intel portfolio, but in the ecosystem through our efforts in Open Source and Open Standards. I think that we learn that trying to dig down and get every ounce of optimization from the hardware by hard coding to a lot of those interfaces is not the fastest way to bring a broad community of developers onboard. And the investments that we have been making is in trying to both build up from a software side perspective, but also build out our capabilities in our existing software tool chains that we have that we have hundreds of thousands of developers that are familiar with developing to those interfaces. When you do that, or when we've been doing that, we don't think that the application developer will particularly care or should particularly care if that workload is running partly on a general purpose processing CPU, partly in a FPGA, which is another asset and capability that we have and is highly programmable or running in an ASIC environment which is another capability that we brought into the company specifically around machine learning and artificial intelligence, through an acquisition of a company by the name of Nirvana. Again, all of those are your building blocks, but our job is to create the software environment that just let's you put it together like Lego Blocks as opposed to really having to know the intricacies and complexities of the underlying ingredient technologies. >> And how does the Open Source initiatives help us get to that customization that I might need for specific verticals and help accelerate the growth for everyone? >> A lot of the investments that we've been making is both in the virtualization layer, but also in container types of technologies. I talked about the Open Shift initiative that we have with Red Hat and with other partners where we're looking at Docker and Kubernetes and container types of deployment models in addition to VM types of deployment models. If you look at everything that is happening in the industry and the investments going there, it really is very much around upleveling the tools so that you can take advantage of the underlying capabilities, but you do have opportunities for customization that don't require, necessarily, programming micro engines down at the bare metal layer or lower layers of the hardware stack, so it very much is the playbook around. If you want to enable a broad ecosystem, you have to lower the barriers to entry, you have to give them a tool chain that they can more easily adapt to or program to and you have to show them opportunities by working directly with the end customers to again, we talked about financial industry or healthcare industry that allows you to optimize for the problems that they're facing or the opportunities that they see as well. Some of the work we do is not just on the technology side, but very much in terms of matchmaking to the end customers and doing the proof of concept and doing the learnings and that iterative process of uncovering the things that you thought were going to be big problems sometimes aren't and the things that you didn't anticipate would be challenges sometimes are and it's hard work, but it actually is really being successful in terms of there's a lot of interest in this area, there's many more tools, there's more investment going in and there's a lot of opportunity for innovation and growth. >> And particularly with the emerging force of artificial intelligence and 5G that really will have a transformative effect on the way we customers, just individual customers interact with these industries. You had some great examples. >> I talked a little bit about a banking application that's sort of natural language processing that happens and the ability to have an AI assistant what can help you when you just speak in regular sentences and syntax but also get smarter over time to learn your individual habits and preferences and really, will provide advice. Not just answer questions but actually provide some investment advice, let's say. We talked about AI in sports, which is another great area for application of artificial intelligence and learning movements and motions and form of an athlete's swing, or an athlete's form or position as they're exercising their sport, but one of the other areas that we're seeing a lot of application is in something as old as agriculture, which is a 23,000 year old industry, but smart and connected cows and smart and connected wine, which is a wonderful application. >> Rebecca: Sure, sign me up! >> But for the farmers to understand the soil quality and to know the forecast and the moisture and the sunshine and the rainfall. I mean, all of these things really allow them to be more effective and have a higher output. More successful crops, more profits, and even their farming equipment. All the sensors that are in farming equipment to be able to predict a failure of the equipment or a service requirement for that piece of equipment, so all of these things that you realize that anything that can be smart and connected is going to be smart and connected. We fundamentally believe that at Intel that whether you're talking about sports and skateboards and bikes or you're talking about industries, financial, medical certainly is a huge one, education or agriculture, there's so many opportunities for you to really have that value creation element of the data collection process. >> I want to ask you also, about the technology industry and the community within the technology industry. It's getting a bad rap these days. There's very little diversity, there's very few women, particularly in leadership positions, very few minorities. I know that this is a cause that you champion personally and professionally. First of all, is it as bad as the headlines when you're in it and second, what are you doing to change it both as an individual leader and what Intel is doing? >> This is something that Intel is deeply committed to from our CEO through our leadership team and really driving throughout the organization. It isn't just because it's the right thing to do, diversity is the right thing to do but it just makes business sense. If you look at just women in general and women and men, women make over half of the purchasing decisions in a family, and actually, in the household, they make more than half the purchasing decisions for the big ticket items, and so it's kind of dumb to not include more women in leadership positions that could have a different perspective on product development and features and trade offs and capabilities in just organically, what you do in terms of your own product innovation. But beyond that, we also know that any organization that has diversity and it's men, it's women, it's ethnicity, it's experience, large company, small company, it's different cultures and backgrounds, you will drive a better business result. Data proves it over and over and over again that you are quicker to innovate, you're quicker to find and identify problems, you're quicker as a team to just move to something that is more innovative faster and it's proven that all of those companies that have more diversity on their boards and in their senior leadership team do drive better business outcomes, so from that perspective, it's again, the right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense. But it is a complex problem and at Intel, we certainly know it's a pipeline problem that starts at a very young age, in terms of just getting, in particular, more girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. Then when they graduate, it's attracting them to come and really be engineers and to maintain that technical passion that they have and sometimes in the face of a lot of adversity, because we know that sometimes their inputs get marginalized or discounted, but then we find that even after we've made it all through that that it's a retention problem from the perspective that women want to see a career progression just like men do, and typically, that is just a bigger challenge for women because the people that make those decisions or provide those opportunities, there's not enough women that are advocating and frankly, not just women, but there are not enough men advocating for those women, so we have a lot that we're investing in this very multifaceted problem. It is a journey, but to your point, I'm not discouraged. I really do think it's better than it's ever been. >> And the bro culture, you talked about the women who may get discouraged because they're not called on in a meeting, they're not chosen for that cool new project. That is deflating. >> It is deflating, and those are the thing that you have to address, but one of the ways that we have found to do that is that you have to assume that there is a bias. We all have biases. This is one thing that we learn is that if you have a brain, you have a bias. It's not good or bad, it just is. There's so many ways to overcome those biases. There's all kinds of ways. We know this from studies that were done. Women that were trying out for the Philharmonic Orchestra in New York. >> Rebecca: The blind audition. >> If you did the audition behind the curtain, they were chosen 50% more of time than if they weren't behind the curtain because you just tend to, your bias is, "well, I didn't hear them play that well," but it's unconscious. You don't realize that you're actually doing that. THere's so many ways that you can overcome the unconscious bias, but you have to acknowledge that it exists and once it exists, then there's a lot of tools and techniques that we employ at Intel in terms of having more diverse hiring panels, having more diverse candidates that you're bringing in, and establishing your criteria for hiring before you meet the candidates, and then assessing each candidate against that criteria so that you don't get to change your mind afterwards. There's lots of ways, but truly, I am very encouraged. I've been at this a long time and I think it is a much better environment now than it was. It's nowhere where we need it to be, but yeah, the culture is tough, but it's not as bad as it was and it is getting better every day. >> Great, well, thank you so much Sandra Rivera. Jeff Frick here with The Cube. We are in Santa Clara, California at the Open Networking Summit 2017. I'm joined this whole show by my co-host, Scott Raynovich. Scott, great to see you. We're excited in this segment to get one of the keynote presenters to come down and spend some time with us on The Cube. So, Sandra Rivera, she's the Corporate VP and GM of Network Platform Groups at Intel. Welcome. >> Thank you. >> Jeff: And your keynote is all about >> 5G. >> Jeff: 5G is now. >> 5G is happening now. >> That is a powerful, declarative statement. >> Indeed, but it's true. >> Jeff: It's true. >> Yes. If you look at 5G being the true convergence of computing and communications, then you see that so much of the capabilities that we have had in the cloud and in the core of the network, really need to scale out to both the Edge and the Access network, to be ever closer to the end user or the end point. It could be a smart phone, it could be a laptop, it could be a tablet, or it could be some of the new devices that we see, drones and robots and connected cars. So this idea that we have to bring programmable, scalable, flexible computing closer to those end points is really the foundation upon which 5G is going to be built. All of that is really what we're driving with software defined networking and network functions virtualization. So 5G is indeed happening now. >> This is really a continuation of the theme from Mobile World Congress just a few weeks ago. Time flies. >> Is it a few weeks? I think it's a couple months. >> I don't know, I can't keep track anymore. >> 5G at Mobile Congress was all the rage. We were talking a lot about what 5G will enable. Connected cars and smart cities and smart factories and smart homes, as well as those immersive experiences that you'll have in your home, cloud gaming and 3D types of experiences and virtual reality or, actually what we're calling merged reality, the ability to put physical objects in the virtual world or virtual objects in your physical world. All of that requires way more bandwidth, very low latency, and much better responsiveness in that end point near the device or the user, which is what all the innovations in 5G from a radio perspective will enable, but of course the rest of the infrastructure has to support it as well. >> There was quite a bit of discussion at Mobile World Congress about 5G, and I think there was a lot of questions also being raised. Some of the larger carriers, such as Deutsche Telekom, I think maybe Orange, they were questioning the size of the investment that's necessary, and I think for some people it threw the timeline into question a little bit, as we know. As we were discussing prior to the show, the standard, we're looking at 2019, 2020 maybe for deployment? >> Sandra: Right. >> What's Intel's view on the deployment timeline? Does that matter to you? >> It matters a lot because we are investing now, and we're investing with a broad ecosystem of partners. If you look at it just from a pure radio perspective, yes indeed, the 3GPP spec for 5G doesn't really get nailed down until the end of '18. You'll start to see true compliant 5G devices introduced in 2019, and rampant scale in 2020. But the network infrastructure, that idea that you need this programmable, agile, composable infrastructure, really starts now, because you're not going to be able to have a light switch of, "Well, this is the network that I need to support all those devices and all those use cases." That composability of the network is anchored on having a programmable capability as opposed to a fixed function set of boxes or appliances, which is really how networks have been architected and built and deployed up until now. It embraces server volume economics, virtualization technologies and that pooling benefit that you get from sharing an underlying resource, as well as cloud architectures and cloud business models. The idea that you can pay as you go. You hear a lot about network slicing and that really is about composing the network for not too few or not too many resources that you need for that particular end use case. So all that is happening now. We are participating with Verizon in the 5G tech forum. We're working with KT and SKT as they get ready for the Winter Olympics. We're working with operators and telecom equipment manufacturers all over the world to prove out connected car and smart cities and smart factories types of use cases. I think that there's always some healthy skepticism about, are we over-investing or are we investing too early? But if you look at the amount of work that we have to get done in what is a relatively short window of time, we feel like we actually need to speed up. >> And 2019 is right around the corner, Scott. I can't believe we're already a third of the way through 2017. >> I have it marked on my calendar already. It's right here. 5G arrives. But tell us, the play for Intel is to be in the NFV Infrastructure for 5G, is that your play? >> Actually, Intel's strategy for 5G is end to end. Clearly we have modem technology that will go into client devices, yes smartphones, yes tablets, yes laptops, but also drones and robots and cars and any number of devices that haven't even yet been invented. We are in all of the infrastructure, from the access layer in terms of the base stations and a lot of the edge computing that is happening there, we're in the edge of the network which could be close to the enterprise, or close to the consumer, and we're in the core of the network which is where a lot of the switching and routing functions, the authentication functions, the security functions are done. Then, of course, we power most of the world's cloud infrastructure. So back into the cloud and the data center, that's Intel. It really is end to end. We have this broad view and this scalable architecture where it's a consistent silken architecture, a common tool chain, and a very broad access to ecosystem and developers to take you through that end to end portfolio of services and capabilities that you require. >> And at the end of the day, it's just eating up a lot of compute, right? >> Lots of compute. If it's a compute problem, Intel feels pretty comfortable that we have leadership there. Indeed. But we have some new announcements here. >> Okay, because you're here. Besides the keynote, you have announcements, too. >> We have some announcements around our data playing development kit, or DPDK. Intel invented DPDK in 2010. That was a set of libraries and optimized drivers for running high performance packet processing on general purpose CPUs. And of course, if you're in the network business it's all about moving the packets, so you need high performance packet processing. But the ability to have these optimized libraries for queue and buffer management, for flow classification, for quality of service, and run it on your standard server CPU, is a very powerful capability because you no longer need purpose built silken to run those functions. We invented DPDK, we contributed it into open source, it ran in an open source project called DPDK.org, but we announced on Monday of this week that that's moving to the Linux Foundation. We're broadening the community of developers, we are multi-architecture, we are very broad in terms of the developers that are contributing to DPDK and we think that this is a fundamental building block of networks that will be, again, built and deployed over time. >> So you'd already invented it, but you handed it over to Linux Foundation. >> We invented it and we contributed it to open source, actually some years ago, into a project called DPDK.org but the announcement was that it was now moving into a Linux Foundation hosted project, because that gives us a broader umbrella by which we can attract more developers and have greater contributions from a broad ecosystem. >> Right. And we saw AT&T just gave a bunch of stuff to the Linux Foundation. >> Sandra: That's right. >> Scott: Everybody's giving it to the Linux Foundation. >> That's right, it's a good place to be. I was curious. Tell me your take, from the Intel perspective on this show specifically, but also more just open source in general and the role that Linux Foundation plays in taking a project that was obviously of significant value, but enabling it to go places maybe that it wouldn't if it wasn't part of the Foundation. >> Indeed, yeah. So Intel is a big believer in open source, open standards, and a big enabler and investor in broad ecosystems. We're consistently the number one or the number two contributor to many of the projects that we participate in, including Linux, the actual Linux kernel. From networking projects perspective, we really do like the leadership that the Linux Foundation is demonstrating in coalescing the industry around some of the big problems and challenges, as well as opportunities that we face together. >> Yes, we're live. >> We're live, it's that stage. So, we do believe that having just a broader landing zone, if you will, for the work that we're contributing, and having that parallelization that comes from a community of developers tackling the same problems together as opposed to one at a time, or as opposed to doing the same thing in various places, is very, very powerful. So we're very happy to be part of many of these networking projects and, of course, we're a big supporter and partner to the Linux Foundation for many years. >> Okay. I guess we're a third of the way, or a quarter of the way through 2017, on our way to 2019, the launch of 5G. Just curious, Sandra, as you look at what you're working on in 2017, obviously the 5G Initiative and all the developments around that are very exciting, we really are excited about it for the IoT side. We don't really spend too much time on the handset side, per se, but obviously for IoT it's very exciting. But what are some of the other priorities you have for 2017 that you're working on if we catch up a year from now that you can report back on? >> We definitely are driving toward the commercialization of NFV and SDN. We have been through a period of time, of technical feasibility, a lot of early lab trials followed by field trials. But we are absolutely seeing now this much broader scale of commercial deployments and we're going to see that throughout 2017 and 2018. We think that, clearly 5G acts as an accelerant to a lot of that work. A lot of the foundational work that needs to be done in terms of network transformation and network virtualization, enables 5G, and then 5G creates a compelling event for us to go faster. So we're getting ready for some of the 2018 Olympics, types of demonstrations of early technologies on the path to 5G in 2019 and 2020. Network transformation, network virtualization is a fundamental piece of that. The other area that we're investing quite a bit in is data analytics. AI, machine learning, deep learning. One of the things that we know is once we have programmable computing in all parts of the network, in the entire spectrum, from the client, to the access, to the edge, the core, and the cloud, that you can actually collect and harness that data and turn it into business value, either upstream to the content providers or downstream to the consumers of the information or the data. We'll see much more of that really starting to come to fruition this year, not just in the big hyperscale cloud guys but a lot of ways that the enterprises can use data and turn that into business value. So we're pretty excited about everything that's happening on that front, as well. >> You're going to be a busy lady. >> Sandra: We're busy. >> All right. Well, Sandra, thanks for stopping by. I had a chance to talk to Intel at 1:30 this morning, in California time, early morning Tuesday time here, Tuesday time in Barcelona. Had a chance to talk with Sandra Rivera, who's the Corporate Vice President/General Manager of Intel's Network Platforms Group. She is in charge of the Intel Technology Group that brings the end-to-end transformation. Really getting 5G ready, part of the Intel brain trust and the leader and really taking the world by storm. 5G obviously the top story and underneath the hood of 5G is the network transformation. I had a chance to ask some very pointed questions, like, "Is 5G ready for prime time?" and, "What's it going to take to change the game "to bring a new business model to power "all the new use cases like autonomous vehicles, "smart cities, a new kind of media and entertainment "landscape as well as smart homes "and smart businesses?" So, let's hear what Sandra had to say, and here's my interview from this morning in Barcelona." >> Sandra: Well, I would certainly say it's revolution not evolution. If you look at all the previous generations of radio technology, 2G, 3G, 4G, it was largely driven by connecting people to other people, and of course the voice era with the 2G and 3G, came the app revolution, and us connecting with our loved ones over social media and all of the new capabilities that we found on the Internet. 4G then became about more capacity and coverage and faster upload and download speeds. With all of the, again, social media and video and media processing. But 5G is fundamentally different because it really brings together the computing and communications paradigm. It is truly that convergence of both computing and communication, and so, in addition to the billions of people that we've been connecting and all the other generations of radio technology, we are now connecting tens of billions of things in that era of 5G. And a lot of what we're seeing here on the ground is just some of those use cases are starting to merge in terms of once you really converge computing and communications, what is possible? What is possible to do? >> John: The big conversation that we've been having yesterday on theCUBE was the confluence between consumer technology and enterprise technology from a business model standpoint. We hear the word "digital transformation," that's the business model for pretty much the global business landscape, but really there's a lot of stuff going on under the hood around, you guys are calling, network transformation. Your CEO was talking on Fortune before the show started about this end-to-end architecture. >> Sandra: Yes, so when we talk about end-to-end, we do talk about every every point of either accessing or delivering information at the end either between people or between things. So it's from the jump-on point, if you will, on the network and the access layer and so of course it's all the new radio technologies up to the edge of a network where a lot of the decision points and the data analytics live and exist, up to the core of the network, which again, is the workhorse of where things are routed and where traffic is steered and what is the different types of traffic that you're trying to get from the source to the endpoint, and then of course back into the data center in the cloud, which is the place where most of the content is either originated or stored or served up. So when we talk about end-to-end, we do talk about every point in that continuum, and the need to have programmable, intelligent computing and communications capability which is very very different from what we've had historically from a network infrastructure perspective. So network transformation is all about embracing server-based technologies and the volume economics benefits that that brings for its relation technology and the fact that you can pool assets and use 'em across many different users and use cases, and of course cloud as both a technology and a business model and the idea that you can lease an asset and afford to lease almost unlimited compute capability, and then release it when you're done. So that end-to-end view and that transformation of the underlying infrastructure is really what we talk about when we talk about network transformation and because 5G requires that programmable computing capability all across that continuum, and in particular being closer and closer to those endpoints, whether they're the autonomous car, or they're drones, or robots, or of course the things that we're quite familiar with in terms of tablets and laptops and smartphones, that is really what we're now enabling under that umbrella of network transformation and 5G is accelerating. >> John: And for the folks watching and listening, we had a great interview with Lynn Comp, who went and did a drill down on NFE and some of those cool tech behind that. On the business model, kind of the landscape question, you mentioned drones, certainly hot. People can look at drones, they see the autonomous vehicles. This is an environment where these new applications and use cases are emerging. So there always seems to be the challenge, and we had an expert discussion this morning in theCUBE here in Palo Alto, around the trade-off between bandwidth and true mobility, and sometimes there is some trade-offs. And not one technology or partner will win it, and you guys are a big part of that. What is your view and Intel's view on the kinds of robust, diverse technologies that are needed to balance the many use cases, and at the same time, create an open ecosystem around fostering this new future growth, which seems to be a big wave we haven't seen since the iPhone in 2007. This is a really game changer. How do you guys view this multitude of technologies and diverse ecosystem and how do you guy foster that? >> Sandra: As Intel, we are a technology innovator and a technology leader and of course that clock never stands still, right? So you need to innovate (laughs) on the technology front and bring out new capabilities, and in particular as that computing and communications world come together, we know that we need to integrate more of the network and wireless IP into the standard roadmap of processors and capabilities that we bring to the market, both in hardware and software ingredients. But as we do that, we are trying to protect the software investment that the developers make in bringing new and emerging applications to market. So while we have, of course, huge CPU assets within Intel, we also have SCGA assets for use cases that would involve changing algorithms, whether they're security algorithms that are deployed differently in different parts of the world, different countries, or of course artificial intelligence, which is again an emerging field with new algorithms and new computational requirements, or on the radio side where the 5G wireless standards are going to be taking route and solidifying over the next several years and continue to evolve. You want to have that programmability so the SCGA assets come into play. And then we leverage that even further with some of the ASIC competency that we have, where you really do work in a hardened piece of silicon, on the ability to run very very fast calculations, many many times over, and to do it in as efficient possible way, both from a cost and count perspective. But all of that underlying hardware and silicon architecture choice really needs to be served up to a broad ecosystem through a software framework that is consistent and undeterministic in where you have a very robust toolchain which is really what Intel invests in. So we invest in robust and comprehensive software tools and frameworks so that we can tap into the very broadest application developer ecosystem that exists in the world. And that's how we see the capabilities that we bring to market tapping into our technology innovation in silicon and software ingredients, but then tapping into, again, something that we believe deeply in, which is a broad ecosystem, and the more market participation you have, the faster that innovation curve that you can drive. >> John: "Rising tide floats all boats," I love that saying, I think that seems to be the case here. Sandra, I want to get your thoughts on the business model on telcos and the industry. People know Mobile World Congress is the big show, but it's also where everyone who's anyone in the business goes, it's a lot of business conversations. I'm sure you're backed up between meeting and meeting after meeting because you got a lot of customers there. Take us through some of the hallway conversations you're having or specific business conversations that you're meeting with customers. What's the buzz in the hallways and what specific conversations are you having with the customers around commercializing, not just accelerating, but commercializing the business models that are going to emerge from these new use cases? >> Sandra: Yeah, well you know actually that's a great question because I've been coming to Mobile Congress for many many years and a lot of the network transformation discussions, and a lot of the discussions even around NFE and FEN in years past, have been rooted in the desire to try to achieve the lower cost point, a total cost of operation that was lower, when you move from fixed-function, purpose-filled, can't reprogram, reprovision the hardware to do anything other than what it was originally designed to do, even though the asset utilization on that investment was very low, 20% maybe 30% at best. So it was this desire to move to, again, volume economics and server-based technology and the benefits of virtualization and pooling. So it started in a cost-optimization type of conversation, but the map moved in the last year, certainly with 5G, into much more, "Well how do we innovate "services faster? "How do we bring new capabilities to market? "And how do we really help to grow the top line, "not just manage our costs?" And I think that's what you're seeing at this event this year, is the excitement around virtual reality and augmented reality, the excitement around a smart home and all the capabilities that you'll have in your appliances and in your infrastructure in your own home and how you run your household. Seeing all of the innovations that we've got in smart cities, so smart lighting, smart water systems, smart meters, and smart parking, another thing that we're seeing here in terms of a set of use cases that we're enabling. Of course, no trade show event that you're talking about in terms of new use cases and new experiences is complete without an autonomous car, so we have a beautiful BMW 7 Series auton. vehicle that we're showcasing here, but again, this is part of what we're enabling in terms of new use cases when you have virtual unlimited computes being brought to the edge of the network with all new radio technologies to address a lot of that bandwidth, a lot of that latency, highly sensitive type of ultra-reliable capability that you need for an autonomous car. So what you're seeing is these smart cities and virtual reality and autonomous driving and smart home, and how all of the underlying technologies make that possible. And from a business perspective, all those new services are clearly what the communication service providers are trying to deliver to the market and trying to do it in a way that embraces cloud business models but also working with all of the enterprises and that traditional business, whether it's an automotive industry or whether it's an industrial automation industry or even all of the appliances that go into your home. All these traditional businesses really disrupting themselves to embrace technology and to bring many more capabilities that, again, have never been possible before. >> John: Yeah the car really brings this data center to the edge in full light for the consumer. It's a moving data center, needs to talk to a base station, needs to talk to the network. And really, this is the new normal. You see Alexa in the home and the voice activation, all the coolness going on there. And a lot of folks have criticized the telcos in the past for being very good at turning on subscribers and billing them as their core competency. But now with IOT, you have literally, you know, provisioning that's happening so fast and so dynamic, you have literally anything with a SIM card is now on the network. This kind of changes the notion of a subscriber. So, moving from that bill to operational in this new thousands of things and people on the network, it's not as clean as it was in the old days. Are the telcos on this? Do they get this concept? I mean, this changes the requirements for the network to be more dynamic and manage the technologies. >> Sandra: It's a fundamental transformation that they're going through, rooted in an urgent business problem that they have, which is that the more data that is created and consumed, the more they have to build out the capacity, but they have to do that in an affordable way, and they can't do it when they're provisioning new services and capabilities and hardware, and particularly in hardware that only does what it was originally intended to do, and they're now moving to a model that is software-defined, where you are able to innovate and provision and deploy at the speed of software, not being anchored in hardware. But they really are absolutely welcoming that opportunity, again, to bring those new services and capabilities to market when they can create a network infrastructure that becomes a platform of innovation, where they can attract developers to imagine new use cases and applications and capabilities that they themselves have the DNA to do but they have such unique assets. They have spectrum, they have contextual information about network bandwidth and conditions. They have customer profile information. They have a billing relationship. >> John: They need security, too, as well. >> Sandra: They have security and reliability, and I mean, all of those assets, if they can tap into that and serve that up, as again, a platform upon which innovation can happen, then that's really their endgame. So while, to your point, they may have been criticized as being kind of slow moving, we really do see them embracing fully this idea that, in order to grow their top lines, and in order to innovate faster in terms of services that, embracing again this fundamental different architectural model of computing and communication converging the server-based and cloud-based technologies, is the wave of the future. And you know 5G just put the nice bow on it, right, because it just makes everything go faster given that all these new use cases that we're looking to enable. >> Producer: Hey John, you only have one question left, so key money question if you want. >> John: Great, my final question. Sandra, my final question is: what's the bumper sticker this year for Mobile World Congress?" If you had to put the bumper sticker on the car, what would it say this year to encapsulate Mobile World Congress? >> Sandra: So for me, it's "5G Starts Today." Because, in order to be ready for all those drones and robots and autonomous cars and all of those immersive experiences in your living room, you really have to transform the network infrastructure today, and that composability of the network infrastructure of the ability to capture a slice of the network and optimize it in realtime for your use case, all that requires programmable, scalable, flexible computing that is secure, that's reliable, and that embraces cloud architectures and cloud business models. And so that is happening today to get ready for 2018, 2019, 2020, when you see many more of those endpoints, those end devices, and those use cases come to be realized, you need to get started today. So 5G is absolutely on its way, and we're very very excited to be a key enabler of that vision. >> John: Sandra Rivera, thanks so much. >>Welcome back to Couchbase connect. My name is Dave Vellante and we're going to dig into a customer case study of sorts with two software engineers from a company called trendy all the largest e-commerce platform in Turkey. And with me are in MRA, tan Rivera, both software engineers at trendy. All welcome. Good to see you guys. Hey, before we get into the story, maybe you can tell us a little bit about trendy all. >>Let me answer that question first. Um, tri-annual uh, today is, um, 10 years old. Uh, actually, uh, it starts with them, um, e-commerce company, uh, Jen, uh, especially, uh, for clothing, uh, today, uh, it's serves several, uh, services, uh, mainly still e-commerce right. Um, we, uh, we do our business mainly on technology and we even have a say in technology, uh, technology is our main concern actually. Um, just like that actually now, >>So thank you for that. I mean, you started, I think, I think the company was founded in 2009, 2010. So you weren't, you were just, you know, kind of which we would consider the, sort of the modern era at the same time. When you look back 10 years, you know, major challenges, major advancements from a technology standpoint. So you at, at the time you had a, uh, a legacy database and you, you had a migraine, maybe you could describe the business conditions that drove you to think about actually making a change. What was the before, and then we can get into the after and what was driving that change? >>Um, maybe I could start it a bit. Well, uh, we have a recommendation domain and try new. It's like when you, when you look at a certain product, like for example, you look at a pencil, it it's commanding you, uh, any razor, uh, if you are going to buy a pink dress, it's going to recommend you a yellow dress. So if you're going to maybe buy pants, it will show you some t-shirts according to it. So, uh, since the recommendations, domain group larger, uh, we, we have struggled, uh, to keep it high scale, and it wasn't a relational DB at first, but that's even as product count increased and, uh, our right frequency increased day by day, uh, and our reef performance was affected very dramatically. Uh, I believe. Yeah. >>So you were using a traditional RDBMS, uh, and then, and, and the issue was you quite, you couldn't make the recommendations fast enough. And, you know, we always say what's real time. Real time is before you lose the customer. So you, you have to make those recommendations in time for the customer to act otherwise, you know, what do you do? Send an email after the fact, Hey, you bought this, nobody's going to pay attention to that. Right? You want to catch them in the moment. Um, and so, so what was it that, that led you to, to Couchbase and w and what was the experience of that? You know, whether it was onboarding, you know, the technology, you know, how difficult was it to get up and running to where you are today? >>Um, we were using ch Couchbase in, uh, in inter-annual, um, for several years, and we had experienced on that. Uh, and, uh, we actually, we need performance as described. So, uh, we convert our data structure to, from relational DB to, um, noise, Carol Levy, um, them actually on our recommendation, uh, platform, the main problem was, uh, invalidation process. You know, um, we are selling things and, um, in seconds they can be sold out and we, we shouldn't be recommend them anymore. And we are, we are keeping track of this by invalidation process and relational DB writing those data to our relationship Libby was, uh, was taking two, two minutes too much time. And, um, by changing this structure to, uh, pathways, we, we, we see that benefits, uh, and it takes so, so, uh, uh, short time, actually, >>I'm so sorry if, if I can just clarify w what was taking a long time, the, the updating the actual records, so that you could actually inform a customer that it was out of stock, or was it the coding that was too complicated? >>Well, it was, it was not because, um, there are millions of products intangible, and, uh, those issues are coming huge, actually. So we are keeping track of time if it's sold out or it's, it can be sellable, uh, when, when a product, uh, detail is seen by the customers, we are recommending some other products too, but those other products must be sellable too. So the main, the main problem was that, and, uh, we are writing them in our relational DB. There is a huge rights law actually. So it was not coding. It was the amount of data actually. >>Okay. And so it was the update intensity, um, within the database and the ability of the database to actually return accurate results quickly. So what was the after, like, uh, can you talk about sort of the, the business impact? What were the, the improvements that you've experienced? >>Yeah. Maybe I can ask her that, uh, like parties said that the main reason we switched is because that, uh, there are so many products coming near in trend, and many of them are being stopped being sold out and the updates to it, it was on a relational, the vendor rights, or too much that you couldn't, uh, dur customers that fast reply because the database was getting effected by the amount of high rights. Because when you think about it, there are millions of products coming, and there are millions of rights, uh, operations on the database. So those affecting the reach performance. So, uh, it, it could occur to you that when you click on a product, you would see maybe as took out product as a recommendation, or maybe a product that is not in the website anymore. So, uh, when we switched to, uh, Couchbase that, uh, we saw that, uh, it's using less resources, which, uh, using less posts, active, alive, and it's also, uh, giving responses faster. >>The main reason, uh, we were using relational DB at first was the invalidation process like five. He said, because it was, we had a consumer that was listening to messages, uh, the innovation messages, and then, uh, and then the writing them into database. But, uh, in the part, uh, it meant that actively writing to database that for every product document that you would need to update the document, but for, uh, for, for, uh, for relational DB, it would be vetoed easier to just make this product, uh, every available, false, or true. So that's why we were sticking with relationship with DB at first. And that's why we made it that first as a relational DB, but as time increased and our product count, and our sellers increased, we realized that, uh, we should find another solution to the invalidation process, and we should, uh, switch because, uh, I mean, it CA it has come to a point at one point that it would just maybe, uh, take a solid, so much time that, uh, we were scaling our consumers at nighttime to just not affect daily users anymore. >>Uh, so that's why that's the main reason we switched. And, uh, after switching, we had in, uh, like I said, the response time and high write throughput, and also one of the reasons is also because that the, uh, the application that was with the use of Couchbase because, uh, since strangled is growing larger than our main data centers. And, uh, like we can see that every day, sometimes we deploy our, uh, apps to yet another cluster. And we, that's why we sometimes need to have backups or different data centers, and Couchbase was providing very good relations, very good solutions to this, which is. Yeah. That's why we switched actually. So we asked >>Couchbase running it's if I understand it, it's running the recommendation engine. And do you still use a traditional RDBMS for the transaction system or is Couchbase doing both? >>Yeah, okay. Uh, we are, uh, actually inter-annual, we are in discovery a team, actually, we call it tribe and in discovery, tribe, uh, relational DB, I think, uh, now, uh, very small, uh, small, uh, teams are using it. Um, it's personally just very low actually. Uh, but, uh, other other tribes, for example, orders, checkout, and maybe, uh, uh, promotions, uh, something like other teams are still using RDBMS, but in discovery team, it's very important to serve customers very fast. We need to show them the products immediately. We need to personalize them. Uh, we sh we should, uh, show them, uh, related products in the meantime, in real time, actually. So in this current Stripe, we are, um, barely using it, uh, RDBMS systems, actually. >>How hard was it to migrate from the RDBMS? Because you hear a lot of stories about how difficult that is to do. You've got to freeze the code, you bringing up new code, you've got to synchronize the functionality. How did you manage that? >>Well, to be honest with you, just ask the data science team to just send the products. Uh, at the same time, we were like, we were keeping the legacy API open that the clients were still coming there. And, um, to be honest, there were lots of legs on that, too. So even if, uh, the, the newer products came a bit later, uh, it shouldn't be seen because it was always coming late. So, uh, we had, we made a new API that is connecting to Couchbase and we wanted the data science team to start feeding it, but we asked the clients to switch it by time. I mean, we were still supporting the old one, but, uh, when we, when we asked the clients to switch to the new API, we just closed the last one. So we didn't really migrate any data to be honest. Like we, we, it was from scratch. And since it's a, it's a recommendation domain, uh, we believe it's better to, uh, add data's from scratch because in our new domains, we are storing them in documents. They are always sending a new list to us. So that's how it gets updated all the time. So since it's not a user related data, it wasn't really like a migration process. >>Is this is part of the secret sauce that you're doing. Schema lists, no schema on, right to Couchbase. And is that correct? And how are you handling it? I'm like, how are you getting that awesome write performance? >>Well, the main reason we believe is that, uh, before, when it was relational DB, like for example, loan product to one product and a second product to first product, third product, first of all, that like you were duplicating the records so that when the product gets removed, uh, from, from a product recommendation, or maybe one of, if a product is getting invisible, for any reason, it should be removed, or maybe it could be a stockout that it means it's not that for every record, you are sending your records for invalidation, but in our new system, it means that this, uh, for this content, there are 24 contents let's say, and like four of them that's finished. It's not there. It's okay. You're just replacing the whole list so that you are not duplicating the records. I mean, this is not like first product first and first, the second, and first to third, and first changes you are replicating this, this change three times, like a delete, uh, product one from three, three product, one from two, and you are deprecating the deletion record, but now we are just replacing the list. So you are doing that all of the operation in 1, 1, 1, uh, Kafka queue message. If I should be able, if I was able to, uh, tell about it. So it's a bit hard to explain it in, uh, in speech, but, uh, we have a nice graphic that's showing how we are doing it now. >>That makes sense. Okay. Thank you for that. And so, as you think about, you're modernizing your application infrastructure, where are you at today? How do you see this modernization effort going forward >>Actually, um, today, uh, we are mainly looking for, um, cross cluster replication. Uh, all our products are, uh, uh, deployed, uh, different clusters and different geographical locations. Uh, we, we always using ch um, we try to always use, um, modern products and, uh, uh, try to avoid, uh, old relational databases, especially for our discovery. Right. And, uh, my mandala is modernizing it, uh, all, uh, engineer's keeping up to date with recent technologies and, uh, our customers are happier. They are not seeing some glitches, some, uh, rates, uh, or while they're using our products. >>Okay. So maybe I could double click on that. So, cause you mentioned the impact of customers and I'm interested in your organizational impact and what it means for you internally, but, but when you talk about cross cluster replication, is that to scale, uh, is that a performance impact? Is that for availability? What's the impact of that effort? That modernization effort? >>Uh, I believe it's, it's all, uh, main reason is availability. I believe. Uh, like we can't know when a cluster can go down, we can't be sure about it, uh, in a, in a system we can, but that we should be up and running all the time. And, uh, there should be some, uh, some backups that, uh, that can switch when a cluster goes down. But also the main reason, uh, well, one of the main reasons is to be able to scale because, uh, the, the clusters that we had wasn't enough, uh, considering our user base. So, uh, let's say you want to even extend your user base, but, uh, like the cluster is being a bottleneck to you because you can't get that much users, but, uh, when you do post cluster that you have backup and you have scalability and it's, uh, considering how new considering if the machines are newer, maybe faster response times. I don't know, uh, maybe, uh, network part would know that better, but, uh, yeah, but all of them, I will leave. >>Great guys. Well, thank you so much for sharing your story, uh, uh, MRA and Fati. conversation a little bit of a break from the road we'd like to have guests come into the palo alto studio and have a little bit calmer conversation without all the buzz of the show and we're excited to have a return guest he hasn't been on for like two and a half years which i find extremely hard to believe it's been too long maria tar she's the CMO of keysight technologies really great to see you wonderful yeah so last time we had you on i had to look it up it was it was october 2016 and you were the CMO of Ixia which is a little bit different or really not that different tell us how you got from ixia to to keysight so keysight technologies acquired Exia and i was fortunate enough to be chosen to be the CMO for keysight technologies so it was a great evolution both for me personally and professionally right and a very kind of similar product and solutions portfolio bigger obviously than what you were doing at Ixia but for people that aren't familiar with keysight give them kind of the quick overview sure so Ixia served two audiences they really targeted the QA engineer as well as the IT infrastructure and keysight actually targets I would say the design engineer the manufacturing engineer part of the Ixia business which is very closely aligned to keysight's is in the test and measurement space so keysight technologies really helped any electrical engineer develop and innovate and bring products to market that that basically have an electric signal going through them what keysight delivers are things like oscilloscopes Network analyzers you know power supplies signal generators and and anything in terms of test and measurement right of design of electronics so you guys in companies been around for a while is four billion in revenue so you guys are basically testing and measuring pretty much everything right this as you say has an electronic signal go through it we have a broad area that we cover and we also have a very very long history in terms of being in this space our heritage started off as the original heel at Packard evolved into Agilent and keysight was spent out about four four or five years ago as an independent company and we're doing really well in terms of raising our awareness and visibility of a new name because anytime you change names you have to re-educate the market right hey this is us you've worked with us for a very long time and we continue to be leaders in this space right good opportunity for you though right that's the that's what they can good see in Mo's four I love my so the cool thing is not only are you working with stuff that's shipping today but you guys have good visibility into the future and as we talked about all the time you know there's some really massive mega trends that are that are coming down the pike that would love to you know kind of get your thoughts off one of them is is 5g and where World Congress was just a couple weeks ago I think you're also at RSA 5g has been getting talked about for a while but it's it's coming and and we see more and more parts I think there's actually been a couple hands that's delivered you probably know way more than I intended tower so wonder if you can explain to people a little bit about 5g when you think about five gene their potential because I don't think many people know much beyond kind of the buzzword that it's you know bigger faster stronger but it's a pretty significant leap over the Kern LTE it's truly a revolutionary and disruptive technology and it enables so much more than what's available today which has really been what I would call incremental evolution with 5g it is it's truly transformative because it you know in addition to faster it is going into spectrum that was traditionally reserved for organizations getting into millimeter-wave so it really changes the technology that we're all used to with the big cell towers 5g uses much smaller antennas and multiple antennas that actually sit on buildings it's you know in terms of because you're using millimeter wave it doesn't travel as long distances there's what you have with LTE which is sub 6 gigahertz that's all on the technology front what's really amazing about 5g is it has capabilities such as ultra-low latency and it's supposed to consume a lot less power so you could almost see it as as really disrupting and transforming everything and how we think about everything whether it's enabling the car of the future and autonomous driving because now all of a sudden your car can actually communicate to everything with vehicle to everything communication or cellular vehicle to everything communications you can think about it as a way that it's transforming IOT and the evolution of everything that's happening in IOT right so yes it's bigger faster better much more reliable you know much more lower latency and and for for those of us who care a lot about sustainability it's supposed to also deliver much lower power consumption right just interesting right because LTE was I think kind of the first step into real data space and and people figured out that we're using our phones for a lot more than talk in fact you know the data transmission rates are way higher than then the voice course on voice over IP and people watched football on their on their TV switches or on their screens which is unimaginable a couple years ago but in 5g now that's really not necessarily optimized for but really an enabler for as you said IOT and kind of this next level of you know kind of machine to machine communication it's not just me texting you with a data input but more these super-high fast really require low latency applications in this IOT and in the industrial IOT world that everybody's so psyched about it can't happen without this type of technology it really can't I mean the whole industry 4.0 and in terms of manufacturing and robotics and real-time communication that can happen in in in that if you think about a lot of the the cars that are out there if you look at Tesla they're doing ongoing updates and ongoing communications with all their cars all the time and so something like 5g enables even a higher degree of communication and understanding of what's going on with the vehicle and as you get into more of autonomous vehicles understanding what all the sensors and the radar in the car is seeing basically communicating that to what's happening with edge computing having all of that processing happen there and being able to you know send that back and and be able to adapt to the environment is going to be pretty significant and revolutionary I mean I think in every area this new technology in some ways just in terms of what it opens up will enable us to think of really transformative and disruptive ways of how we do things right and it does require going along for the ride investing early understanding what it means and I would say it crosses so many vertical industries right we definitely have to have lunch with you and Sandra Rivera from Intel it would be a really really fun lunch but I one of the things you touched on with that I don't think people really appreciate is this kind of new age of connected device and clearly Tesla's an easy example right it checks in every night but as we see more and more devices being connected kind of back to the mothership and and the ability for a maker of something to actually know now how are people using it it's not just I build it I ship it to my distributor and maybe I'll get a few back every now and then and we can we can take it apart and see how people used it but just the whole kind of product management lifecycle when you've got connected devices that actually report home and to how they're actually being used and how people are using them is such a transformational both the relationship between the user and the device but now the device back to the man you that they never never used to have before yeah and it has both kind of technological as well as I would say society oriented ramifications if you think about in the Tesla example you're effectively saying hey it's okay for Tesla to constantly talk to my car a lot of times we're used to the model of once I buy something it's mine you know this is my device not something that's part of your ongoing network so to speak and so with with a lot of these evolutions that are going on there's going to be both a capability shift in terms of what we can enable but there's also going to come with it somewhat of a society shift of what's now accessed about you so for example with IOT if you choose to move towards this concept of body area networks and having sensors all over you or potentially even embedded in you how that is being leveraged to provide you information how do you protect that from a security standpoint from someone tapping into that to abuse that information so a lot of those topics were really big topics at Mobile World Congress in terms of the coming of 5g and you know just even kind of there the the completion of the standard because it's not yet fully ratified yet right so there's ongoing evolutions and not there's obviously a lot of hype out there on this we are very much involved with the whole ecosystem that's involved in 5g all the way from chipsets to the devices to the networks that carry them you know sort of looking at the whole end-to-end eCos to the antennas you name it to the base stations we're involved in in that whole ecosystem and you as keysight we actually have to get in really early because all of those innovators are depending on our technology to test and validate that it will perform as expected because you're working with all those pieces of electronics in that hole that holes system yeah well Mobile World Congress is interesting last week or the week before was our essay and a lot of the things you're talking about I would argue are probably gonna be more important on the RS a type of kind of view of the world versus the Mobile World Congress assuming you get everything to work which which which I'm sure everybody will but but kind of the legal ramifications and the moral ramifications and the data privacy ramifications when there is so many more connected devices and as you said body area network right now it's my heart rate I went to an interesting Wall Street Journal conference where people can sell back their 23andme genomic data back into a pool for researchers who are looking for certain profiles so they can do their clinical trials and you know that's basically it's basically an electronic representation of literally who you are and so again I think you I think you touch on a lot of really important points that it's the security and David privacy and and in the the moral issues around how that's used treated stored protected are gonna be the bigger issues as we just get more and more of these things becoming really its software and data which we see in the products tehsils a lot more software than it is a car and that's why they can do updates all the time and keep updating the features well even in our business we're becoming much more of a software oriented business in terms of our test and measurement and how we look at the whole design workflow and to end so in many ways everything is is becoming software right just because if you think about this concept of the digitization that's going on of everything there's a lot of discussions about this concept of digital twins right where there's enough information derived from something physical that you can essentially replicate the digital twin and you can do the simulations and in in what you're describing you know you basically you could potentially have it model and represent whether it's a robotic process or a car process and anticipate hey this is time when this is going to wear down you know this is what I'm seeing out there and and it's almost becomes predictive right in terms of what's going on in the real world so it's it's really exciting stuff and it's wonderful to be at the because of this right going to RSA i agree with you all of those topics we're front and center very important to understand and have the visibility in terms of a lot of these 5g networks there's so much throughput going in how do you you know let's say you're a service provider and you want to offer this service how do you actually measure and have visibility in terms of really that is the service that you're offering so there's a lot of discussion in terms of providing that visibility and that security in terms of for those types of customers right it's funny we've done a lot of stuff with GE and back with the software group with Bill ruin team and they've talked about gee talks about digital twins a lot in the context of the industrial products that they built whether it's a turbine engine or whatever to the point that you said so you can do testing and you can do maintenance scheduling and all this other stuff what was weird at the Wall Street Journal conferences they're talking about digital twins for people your digital twins so now I can test you know how would you respond to certain drug treatments how might you respond to a different diet regime how might you respond differently to a different exercise regime and I'd never kind of heard that digital twin concept applied to a person and it's that's really interesting it's really interesting times but before I let you go I imagine your business has changed quite a bit as the kind of percentage of make up of all these devices has shifted from you know kind of dedicated purpose-built hardware which is probably relatively easy to test to kind of hardware platforms that are supporting a larger and increasing amount of software that actually drive the functionality must be good for your business because I'm sure the testing has got to be much more complex not to mention people are pushing updates all of the time really different models and just testing a box well it has changed and actually what's you know when I talk to our customers their goal is to innovate and bring their products to market faster and as a company that supports them our goal is to accelerate their innovation and a lot of times it's how do you share the information as it's going from the design engineer - you know sort of the the quality and test - then go to manufacturing because a designer will build his product and then he'll send it off and say ok I'm kind of done how do you then make sure that at every cog of the wheel you're basically able to share back what his expectation were when he was building it in a CAD system versus what what they're actually seeing when they test the real-life product versus what they actually see when they're manufacturing and applying the same tests so having that consistent software which at keysight we call path wave it really allows that acceleration and the sharing across all of those different groups so that you can optimize the flow so to speak of your design the other exciting part is is you're right there's just so much innovation and evolution in terms of the areas that we participate in because all of these technologies are changing you know we talked about sort of the the autonomous vehicle just as important as the electric vehicle and and the growth in terms of how do you manufacture and test batteries in a scale that's going to be required to keep up with the demand because traditional methods it takes a long time to to test a battery to make sure it's available and can be used and we have some really innovative technology that allows us to to expedite and accelerate that testing so customers of ours like BMW are leveraging this technology so that they can accelerate their their battery production testing and deployment right well we'll have to have you back another time we're out of time dig just just I'm so excited by the whole kind of change of mobility which is driven by really high capacity inexpensive batteries and these really powerful little brushless motors and and as those things kind of permeate and all these different form factors thankfully driven by the high bania fact or the high volume car manufacturers since it's the same little cells that run a lot of these things it's pretty pretty cool space but but we can't get deep into that this time I'll have to say throw for next time so hopefully it won't be another two and a half years I hope very well thanks for stopping (salsa music) >> Hello everyone, welcome to our special CUBE exclusive coverage in Puerto Rico. I've been here on the island all week, talking to the most important people, entrepreneurs, citizens of Puerto Rico, the entrepreneur, the students, connecting with Blockchain, investors, thought leaders, and the pioneers. I'm John Furrier, the cohost of theCUBE, co-founder of SiliconANGLE Media, and we're here with Crystal Rose, who is the CEO and co-founder of Sensay, doing something really cutting edge, really relevant, and kind of ahead of its time, but I think it's time to get it out there and get that token program. Crystal Rose, thanks for joining me and spending time with me. >> Thank you for having me. >> So one of the things I think that you're doing, and I want you to explain this because it's nuanced, and a lot of the super geeks get it and alpha geeks will get it, but the mainstream people are used to dealing in their silos. I use Facebook, I use LinkedIn, I use Twitter, I use chat, I use Telegram, I use these apps. The world's kind of horizontally being disrupted because of the network affect that Blockchain and Crypto is now the underpinnings of, and there's ICOs out there and other things happening, but it's a disruption at the technology stack with software. You guys are doing something with Sensay in the SENSE token that is changing the equation of how people come together, how people grow and learn, whether it's a nonlinear path of some proficiency or connecting with folks or just learning, whatever it is, it's a discovery mechanism. Take a minute to explain what you guys are doing and why it's so important. >> Well we built Sensay to connect everyone together without any borders or intermediaries, and so really it's as simple as every phone has the capability to have a messenger. We have five billion phones that have SMS on them, and so we wanted to take the most basic messaging system, which is the most important thing that people do, and connect it to any other messenger, so Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Slack, anywhere where people are chatting, we wanted to create a system that is interoperable and can decentralize your contact list, essentially. >> Yeah, so this is important, so like most people when they go to social networks you got to find a friend, you get connected. In some cases I don't want to have to friend someone just to have a chat, I mean I may not want to friend them, or I might want to or it's a hassle, I don't know who to friend. Is that kind of where you guys come in? >> Yeah, that's one really great use case, because things like Facebook max you at five thousand friends, so if you friended everybody that you had a conversation with, if you needed to know something. Let's say that every Google search that you did was actually a conversation, you would cap the number of potential contacts. We have a circle of people around us that extends out with different tiers. But I think some of the most important people in our lives are actually strangers. So instead of building the social graph we wanted to build the stranger graph. Sensay cares more about what you know than who you know. Because if we can connect people together around similar interests and like-mindedness, we're connecting tribes, and that's really the innate human connection that we're all looking for. And it's also when you extend yourself outside of your social graph, you're most likely to educate yourself or to uplift yourself more. So the way to level up is to get somebody who's an eight or a 10 if you're a five or a two, and find someone outside of your current circle. >> And that also eliminates all this group think we've seen on some of these hate threads that have been on, whether it's Facebook or some IRC backchannel or Slack channel, you see the hate just comes in because everyone's just talking to themselves. This is the new way, right? Connecting out? Through the metadata of the chat. >> Exactly, we want people to seek out good connections, helpful connections, and so if you can both contribute what you know you get rewarded. And if you can ask people on the network you also get rewarded. So by asking something, you're receiving a reward. It's a two-way system. So it's not just the person who is helping, so we don't really encourage an economy of experts. We think that everyone is a sensei. A sensei literally means a person who's been there before. So we think of that as somebody who has had that life experience. And I think if we look at the internet, the internet democratized expertise. It gave us the ability for every single person to write what they were thinking, or contribute some kind of content in some way. But for 20 years the internet has been free. It's a really beautiful thing for consumption, and open source is the absolute right methodology for software. When it comes to your own content a reward makes sense, and so we wanted to create SENSE on top of the platform as a value exchange. It was a point system, so kind of like Reddit Karma. And we wanted to let people exchange it out for some value that they could transact in the world. >> So basically you're going to reward folks with a system that says, okay, first ante up some content, that's your SENSE token, and then based upon how you want to work with people in the network, there's a token transaction that could come out of it. Did I get that right? >> Exactly. So the person who contributes on the network gets rewarded for that data, and it can be anything that you've done in the past, too. So if you have a lot historical data on Facebook or on GitHub for instance. Let's say you're a developer and you have a bunch of repos out there that could be analyzed to see what kind of developer you are, or if you've contributed a lot to Reddit, all of that data is out there, and it's been something that defines you and your personality and your skills and who you are, so you can leverage that, and you can get a reward for it just by letting Sensay understand more about you, so the AI runs through it. You get more rewards, though, if you have real conversations. So it's almost like a bounty program on conversation. >> So we have the same mission. We love what you're doing. I'm really so glad you're doing it. I want to get to an example in Puerto Rico where you've reached out with strangers, I know you have. And get that, I want to get to that in a minute, but I want to continue on the Sensay for a second and the SENSE token. As you guys do this, what is the token going to be looking like to the user? Because you have a user who's contributing content and data, and then you have people who are going to transact with the token, it could be a bounty, it could be someone trying to connect. How is the token economics, just so I can get that out there, how does that work? >> Well right now in Sensay the transaction is peer to peer, so both users who are chatting have the ability to tip each other, essentially. They can give each other some coins within the chat. We have the concept that when you're having a conversation it's always a buyer and a seller. It's always a merchant and a consumer, and sometimes those roles flip, too. I'll be selling you something and eventually you're selling me something. But it's a natural way that we chat to transact. So that was the first way that the token could be used. We then realized that the powerful part of the platform is actually everything underlying the application. So the layer underneath really was the most powerful thing. And so SENSE network evolved as a way for developers who are creating apps or bots to be able to build on top of the network and leverage the access to the humans or to their data, and so now the token can be used to access the network. You get paid if you contribute data or users and vice versa, you can pay to access them. What that's doing is it's taking away the advertising model from being the only entity that's earning a profit on the data. So you, the user, when you're giving your data to Facebook, Facebook earns a lot of money on it, selling it over and over repeatedly to advertisers, and while it's technically yours in the terms you own it, you don't actually have any upside of that profit, and so what we're doing is saying, well why don't we just let a potential business talk to you directly on your consent and give you the money directly for that? So that two or five dollars for one connection would go straight to you. >> This is the new business model. I mean, this is something that, I mean first of all, don't get me started on my ad and tech rant because advertising creates a bad behavior. Okay? You're chasing a business model that's failing, attention and page views, so the content is not optimized the proper way. And you mentioned the Facebook example. Facebook's not optimizing their data for a user experience, they're optimizing for their monetization, which is counter to what users want to do. So I think you kind of are taking it in another direction, which we love 'cause that's what we do, we are open source content, but the role of the data is critical so I got to ask you the hard question. I'm a user, it's my data, how do the developers get access to it? Do they pay me coins or... You want developers because that's going to be a nice piece of the growth so what's the relationship between the developer, who's trying to add value, but also respecting the user's data? >> Exactly, so the developer pays the network and as a user you're a token holder, you own the network, essentially. So there is really no real middle layer since the token will take a small amount out for continuing to power the network, but a nominal amount. Right now the most expensive thing that happens is the gas that's on top of Ethereum because we're an ERC20 token. So we're looking to be polychain. We want to move onto other types of blockchains that have better, faster transactions with no fees and be able to pass that through as well. So we really want to just do a peer-to-peer connection. There's no interest in owning that connection or owning the repository of data. That's why the blockchain's important. We want the data to be distributed, we want it to be owned by the user, and we want it to be accessible by anyone that they want to give access to. So if it's a developer, they're building a bot maybe, or if it's a brand, they're using a developer on their behalf they have to pay the user for that data. So the developer's incentives are completely aligned with the peer-to-peer architecture that you have, users interests, and the technical underpinnings of the plumbing. Is that right? >> Exactly. >> Okay, good, so check. Now I got that. All right, now let's talk about my favorite topic, since we're on this kind of data topic. Who's influential? I mean, what does an influencer mean to you? Is it the most followers (mumbles) it's kind of a canned question, you can hear it coming. I'll just say it. I don't like the influencer model right now because it's all about followers. It's the wrong signal. 'Cause you can have a zillion followers and not be influential. And we know people are buying followers. So there's kind of been that gamification. What should influence really be like in this network? Because sometimes you can be really influential and then discover and go outside your comfort zone into a new area for some reason, whether it's a discovery or progression to some proficiency or connection, you're not an influencer, you're a newbie. So, context is very important. How do you guys look at, how do you look at influencers and how influence is measured? >> I think at the bare bones an influencer is someone who drives action. So it's a person who can elicit an action in another person. And if you can do that at scale, so one to many, then you have more power as an influencer. So that's sort of the traditional thinking. But I think we're missing something there, which is good action. So an influencer to me, a good influencer, is somebody who can encourage positive action. And so if it's one to one and you get one person to do one positive thing, versus one to a thousand and you get a thousand people to do something not so great, like buy a product that's crap because it was advertised to them for the purpose of that influencer making profit, that metric doesn't add up. So I think we live in a world of vanity metrics, where we have tons of numbers all over the place, we have hearts and likes and stars and followers and all of these things that keep adding up, but they have no real value. And so I think it's a really, like you said before, the behavior is being trained in the wrong way. We're encouraged to just get numbers rather than quality, and so what I think a really good influencer is is somebody who has a small group of people who will always take action. It can be any number of people. But let's say a group of followers who will take action based on that person's movements and will follow them in a positive direction. >> And guess what, its a network graph so you can actually measure it. That's interesting... >> Exactly, exactly. >> I can see where you're going with this. Okay, so I got to talk about your role here in Puerto Rico. You mentioned earlier about reaching out to strangers, the stranger graph, which is a way, people's outside of their comfort zones sometimes, reaching out to strangers. You came here in the analog sense, you're in person, but on the digital side as well, kind of blends together. Give an example where you reached out to strangers and how that's impacted your life and their life, because this is the heart of your system, if I can get that right. You're connecting people and creating value, I mean sometimes there might not be value, but you're creating connections, which have the potential for more value. What have you done here in Puerto Rico that's been a stranger outreach that turned into a wow moment. >> Our outreach has been so far an invitation. So we bought a space here that's turned into a community center. Even at the very beginning we had no power as most of the places around that have been sitting for a year or two or since the hurricane, and so we put a call out and said we'd like to get to know the community. We're doing something called Let There Be Light, which is turn the power on, and you know, we put it out to a public group and saw who would show up. So basically it's a community, central building, it's a historical building, so a lot of people know it. There's a lot of curiosity, so it was just a call, it was a call for help. It was really, I think the biggest thing people love is when you're asking them for help, and then you give gratitude in return for that help and you create a connection around it. So that's why we built Sensay the way that we did, and I think there's a lot of possibilities for how it could be used, but having that encouragement of the community to come and share, we've done that now this whole week, so this is restart week, and one of the other things that we've done is help all of the conferences come together, collaborate rather than compete, so go into the same week, and put all of these satellite groups around it. And then we blanketed a week around it so that we had one place for people to go and look for all of the events, and also for them to understand a movement. So we since then have done a dinner every single night, and it's been an open invitation. It's basically whoever comes in first, and we've had drinks every night as well, open. So it's really been an invitation. It's been an open invitation. >> Well congratulations. I really love what you're doing. You guys are doing great work down here. The event this week has been great. We've got great content. We have some amazing people and it's working, so congratulations on that. As you guys look forward, one of the things I've observed in my many years of history, is that there are a lot of waves, I've seen all the waves, this wave's the biggest. But what jumps out at me is the mission-driven aspect of it. So I mean I can geek out on what's the decentralize and the stacks and all the tech stuff happening, but what's most impressive is the mission oriented, the impact kind of thinking. This is now, society is now software driven. This is a new major thinking. Used to be philanthropy was a waterfall model. Yeah, donate, it either goes or doesn't go. Go to the next one, go to the next one. Now you have this integrated model where it's not just philanthropy, it's action, there's money behind it, there's coding, there's community. This is now a new era of societal entrepreneurship, societal missions. Let's talk about your vision on this mission and impact culture that's part of this ethos. >> I think impact is the important word there. So we think about, we think about bringing capital, like you said with normal philanthropy, you can bring capital and you can continuously pump capital into something, but if the model is wrong it's just going to drain, and it's going to go to inefficient systems, and in the end maybe do some help, but a very small percentage of the capacity of what it could do. So what we have the concept of is bringing funds here. We have a fund that was just launched called Restart Ventures, and the idea is instead of compounding interests, we want to make compounding impact, and so it's a social good focused fund, but at the same time all of the proceeds generated from the fund recycle back into other things that are making more impact. So we're measuring based on how much impact can be created with different projects. It could be a charity or it could be an entrepreneur. And if we're getting a multiple, most of that money is going back. So a very small percentage goes to the actual fund and to the fund managers, and the lion's share of the fund is going back into Puerto Rico. So I think if we look at how we can help in a way that is constantly regenerative, sustainable is good, regenerative is better. We want to at least elevate ourselves and get to the point of sustainability, but we're not improving at that point. We're still just fixing problems. We want regenerative. So if we can keep planting things that regrow themselves, if we can make it so that we're setting up the ecosystem to constantly mend itself, it's like a self-healing system of software, this is the right way to do it. So I think that's the new model. >> You built in some nurturing into the algorithm, I like that. 'Cause you're not going to do the classic venture capital carry, you're going to rotate in, but still pay some operators to run it, so they got to get paid. So I noticed in the announcement there was some money for managing directors to do it. So they get paid, and the rest goes into the compounding impact. >> Right. >> Okay, so I got to ask you what your view is these days on something that's really been important in open source software, which again, when I started it was a tier 2 citizen, at best, now it's running the world, tier 1. Open source ethoses are sprinkled throughout these new, awesome opportunities, but community made it happen. What is your current view on the role of the community, communities in general, to make this new compounding impact, whether it's software development, innovation, impact giving, regenerative growth. What's your view on community? >> If community operates with a mentality of giving or contribution over consumption we do a lot better. So when you have an open source network, if a community comes and they contribute to it more, that's something that regenerates. It keeps adding value. But if a community comes and they just keep consuming, then you have to continue to have more and more people giving. I think a really good example of this is Wikipedia. Wikipedia has hundreds of thousands of people who constantly contribute, and the only reward that they've ever gotten for that is a banner ad that says please donate because we don't do ads. So it's a broken model, because you want it to be free and you want it to continue to have the same ethos and you want it to have no advertising, yet the people who contribute most of the time also contribute most of the funding to keep it alive because they love it and care about it so much. So how could we change that model so that the community could give contributions while also receiving a way to make sure that they're able to keep doing that. And a reward system works, and maybe that's not the only solution, but we have to think about how we can keep creating more and more. >> Well I think transparency is one thing I've always loved. The thing that I always hear, especially with women in tech and these new important areas like underserved minorities, and also the bad behavior that goes on in other groups, is to shine the light on things. Having the data being open, changes everything. That is a huge thing. So community and open data. Your thoughts? I'm sure you agree? Open data and the importance of having the data exposed. >> One hundred percent. So our platform also has a layer of anonymity on the user by default, and part of the idea of being able to understand whether or not data is good. Because think of human data, we have to figure out quality. In the past there would be a validation system that is actually other humans telling you whether or not you're good and giving you some accreditation, some verification. This is our concept of experts on things. Now we would rather take consensus. So let's just crowdsource this validation and use a consensus mechanism that would see whether or not other humans think the data is good. If we're using a system like that, we have to have open data, it has to be transparent and it has to be able to be viewed in order to be voted on. So on our platform on just the first application on Sensay, we expose this consensus mechanism in a feature called Peek. So Peek basically lets you peek inside of conversations happening on the network. You can watch all the conversations that happen, the AI pulls out the good ones, and then you vote on them. >> It's kind of like when you walk into a nightclub, do I want to kind of hang out here? >> Yeah, you're kind of a voyeur but you get rewarded for doing it. It's a way for us to help classify, it's a way for us to help train the AI, and also it's a way for people to have passive ability to interact without having to have a conversation with an actual human. >> Well you're exposing the conversation to folks, but also you get signaling data. Who jumps in, who kind of walks away. I mean it's a gesture data, but it's a data point. >> Right, and it's completely private. So the beauty of the transparency is there's actually privacy baked in. And that's what I love about blockchain is it has all of the good things. >> Crystal, I got to ask you a final question. I know you're very busy, and thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me today here on theCUBE here in Puerto Rico. This week you've been super busy, you look great. I'm sure you've been up, burning the midnight oil, as they say. What is the, I won't say craziest thing because I've seen a lot of cool, crazy things going on here, it's been fun, what is some highlights for you? Conversations, meeting new people, can you just share a couple anecdotal highlights from restart week that have moved you or surprised you or just in general might be worth noting. >> I've been overall extremely surprised but the sheer number of people who showed up. I feel like a few months ago there was a small group of us sitting around wondering what it would be like if we could encourage our friends to come here and share the space. So just to see the thousands of people who have come here to support these several conferences has been amazing. My most surprising thing, though, is the amount of people that have told me that they bought a one-way ticket and have no intention of going home. So to make Puerto Rico your home I think is a really amazing first step, and I just did a panel earlier today with the person in government who had instituted Act 20 and 22, and that was the initial incentive-- >> Just take a minute to explain what that is for the folks that don't know what it is. >> Sure. So Act 20 and 22 are for the company and the individual respectively. They are a way for you to get a tax incentive for moving here as a resident or domiciling your company here. So you get 0% taxes. I think companies range up to 4% or something like that, and that incentive was created to bring more brilliant minds and entrepreneurs and different types of people with different vocations to the island. So basically, give them a tax incentive and encourage the stimulation of economy. So that has brought this wave of people in who have an idea that no taxes are great. At the same time they fall in love with the island. It's amazing because to me Puerto Rico is a combination of LA's weather, San Francisco's open-mindedness, and Barcelona's deep European history. It's just a really beautiful place. >> And it's US territory, so it's a short hop and a jump to the States if you need to, or Europe. >> Yeah exactly. And no customs and you have your driver's license to get here. Also it's a US dollar. And I say that because most people in America mainland don't realize that Puerto Rico is an American territory, and so they sort of think they're going to a foreign country because it's treated that way by our government. But what I've been really shocked about, though, is the sheer amount of innovation already here. The forward thinking ways of people and the embracing of things like open source and blockchain technology, because their minds are already in a mode of community, a mode of sharing, a mode of giving. >> We interviewed Michael Angelo from Edublock.ido, Edublock, they're connecting all the universities with blockchain. We also interviewed Damaris Rivera, with Puerto Rico Advantage. They'll move you down here. You can press a button, it's instant move. So folks in Silicon Valley who are watching who know us and around the world know theCUBE, there's a group of like-minded people here that have tech chops, there's capital flowing. There's capital people I know have moved here, setting up shop, as well as the Caymans and everywhere else, but it's nice. So it's kind of like LA. >> There is a lot of capital. I have just witnessed a couple hundred million dollars of funds that were established in the last couple of months. And this is around all different types of technology sectors. You don't have to be a blockchain company. You can be innovating in any way possible. One of my favorite projects is a machine that turns plastic bottles into diesel fuel. So one of the problems here is that the generators on the island, when we were here last time we met a guy that was working at a bar in a restaurant, and he was like, "Hey I saw you guys in New York Times "and I think you're like the Crypto people." And he had a conversation, and he said, "I was wondering if you could help my grandmother "who is stuck with no power, and it's been months, "and she's in her 90s, and she needs a generator to run "a machine that keeps her life supported." and so a couple of people went out to bring more fuel, bring a generator to donate. They started understanding that there are so many areas that still need this level of help, that there's a lot that we can do. So when I see projects like that, that's something I want to back. >> Yeah, it's entrepreneurial action taking impact. Crystal, thanks so much for coming out. Crystal Rose, CEO, co-founder of Sensay, real innovative company, pioneer here in the Puerto Rico movement. It's a movement, a lot of tech, entrepreneurs, capital, investors, and the pioneers in the blockchain, decentralized internet are all here. Day One Wrap - Red Hat Summit 2017


 

>> Announcer: Live from Boston, Massachusetts, it's The Cube covering Red Hat Summit 2017. Brought to you by Red hat. >> I'm joined by my co-host, Stu Miniman. Stu, this is day one of the conference: 20 keynotes, six general sessions, people from 70 countries gathered here in Boston, Massachusetts. You are a Red Hat Summit veteran. Thoughts, impressions of the first day. What has struck you really? >> So first of all, it's like Red Hat itself. The company just keeps growing. It's just one of those, you know, strong progress. We talked a little bit over the intro this morning with Dave Vellante as, what is it, 60 quarters consecutively that the company has had revenue growth. It's like, I've worked for a lot of tech companies. It's like, I remember when I worked for (mumbles) when they were doing it (mumbles). They have a miss and the stock kind of drops. IBM, you know, has had quarter and quarter and things like this, but with all of these waves and look, Red Hat's not the biggest company out there, but they are an important player in many changes in the ecosystem. This is one of my favorite developer shows that we cover at the show. Of course, Open Source, we used to say, okay, software's leaving the world and Open Source is eating software. Red Hat's right in the middle of this. I think most people agree. There is really only one way to Red Hat. There's not going to be a Red Hat of something else. There's no one else to really capture that. They got involved at a certain point in time where they could have that model, but they've extended it. They understand what they're doing. They're getting involved in a lot of interesting technologies and there's a lot of people, like most conferences that we go to, there's a lot of passionate people that are really interested, very tech savvy group here, going into all of these breakouts. Many came yesterday for some things. They're coming for a whole week to just dig in, do demos. Down on the show floor, they've got little coating challenges and VR things. I mean there's just a lot of pieces of the show and we only get to see a part of it, but I've enjoyed the customers, the executives, and only one day of three that we're covering so far. >> It is early days in the summit, but where would you say that we are in terms of the maturity of the cloud? We heard from Jim Whitehurst, the CEO, he's going to be on the program tomorrow. He talked about how cloud strategy really is the #1 thing on customers' mind. The cloud is not new and we are really evolving and is maturing, where are we? >> Right, a couple of stats from the keynote this morning. It was 84% of customers have a cloud strategy. Now those of us in the analyst world, we might say, "Well, let's see whether they really have a strategy "they understand," and 59% have a multi-cloud environment which doesn't surprise us. Most people, the joke we used to have was, you had two types of customers, those that were using Amazon and those that didn't realize that some group was using Amazon, reminds me of a comment I made earlier, about like Linux itself. There was always, 15 years ago, big companies would be like, "oh, no, we're a Unix shop," or "we're looking at windows." No, no, no, there's the guy in the corner. He's been using Linux for awhile and that's been a big driver, so cloud absolutely is maturing. I loved, it was an interesting discussion we had with Paul Cormier towards the end of the day. We were seeing Ramgji from Google talking about how we've got the infrastructure and we've got the applications. And I'm an infrastructure guy, but I knew from day one, the reason you build infrastructures is because of your application. If I can just buy SaaS, I don't care about the infrastructure underneath it. The SaaS provider sure does. We talked a lot to SaaS providers as to how they're building their solution. If I'm using infrastructure as a service, you know, there's some I need to understand the infrastructure and there's plenty of infrastructure here, everything from, there's the storage and networking teams, Open Source is permeating every corner of the environment, so it's maturing, but in many ways it's gotten more complex. Cloud was supposed to, many of us thought, simplify the environment, but boy, it seems that many of the things that we had in previous ways as it gets more mature, gets a little bit more complex. Red Hat tries to take those pieces together, build them into solutions. We've talked about there's Red Hat Linux. Enterprise Linux is the platform that can live in many environments. Open Shift is something that allows to encapsulate all of those services, things like containers, we're working with our cloud data applications, and how I want to build them, Open Shift's going to help and you know Cooper Netties goes into the mix so Red Hat is places strategic bets, and, you know, has a strong position in the number place and has big partners. It's really interesting to see. We've had a couple on already, and we'll have many on through the week from key providers in the infrastructure and cloud players out there. >> I think the theme of this year's conference is the power of the individual, and it really is. I mean, we heard from Sam Ramji who said, "This is the age of the developer." Developers have more respect, more veneration, than ever before and yet we also heard from Sandra Rivera, it is also harder than it has ever been before to be a developer because there is just so much data and it's hard to know the difference between the good data and the bad data and where you find the right insights to make decisions that drive the business on that data and if you're a developer, you might not have the business savvy to do that, so it's a real balance here that the companies and developers themselves are trying to strike. Are they doing a good job? I mean, is it still too early? >> It's funny. When you say that it makes me think of in the machine-learning space, it's how do we get the data to train the machine to understand what is good or not, and you know, I wish they'd done that for us when we all went to college because in my job, it's always like, okay, what data can we trust? Well, if you remember from Princess Bride, it was like, with Versini, it was like, well, I know a vendor told me information, so therefore, I know I can't trust that data, but if I take someone else's data, you know, it gets very confusing as it, what I'm saying, is any single piece of data a lot of times you know you can throw that out because maybe it's good, maybe it's not, but how do I get, understand the trends, understand what's going on. I love talking to practitioners here that when they're talking about their business and the impact it's had. We had one of the customers on today was like, "Look, I deployed this, and I have like $6 million "worth of savings in my business year every year. I mean, that's hard information, hard to argue with it. Now are there other solutions that might do that? Sure, but yeah, it's challenging to understand what's good data, what's not good data. As an industry, you know, whether that's the kind of the people or the machines themselves. >> I think the other question that we're all grappling with here is that, and you talked about this earlier, just talking about the evolution of Red Hat that you've seen in coming to this summit all these years. This is a company founded in 1993. Today it has a market cap of $15 billion, 2.4 billion in revenue, nearly 8,000 employees. Can a big company, and it's a big company now, can it innovate, can it truly innovate and we heard in the keynote one of the things that Jim Whitehurst was trying to do was to cultivate a startup mindset. Is that possible? >> Yeah, it's a great question, and I know, Rebecca, you and I've been talking about this throughout the week so far as to big companies have challenges because there are the structure and the organization and what drives the business. What's interesting about Red Hat, of course, is that sure they have products, but underneath it, it's all Open Source, so community is in their DNA. As Paul Cormier said, he's like "We couldn't "buy a company and do it closed-source again." They did that a couple years ago, it didn't go well. They were going to transition it, but it's been a case study that's been written up. (talking over each other) >> Me and Jim in the room alone, yes. >> Absolutely, so what's interesting is Red Hat is more like a community in many ways. As Jim Whitehurst spoke, is the open organizations so they act more like an Open Source community than they do a company, of course, that being said, they're profitable, they have employees, they have benefits, they have locations all around the world so it's been interesting to see how Red Hat adopts certain technologies, contributes to them. You know, it would be interesting to see who else Jim Whitehurst tomorrow and say okay, you know, what is a product that was developed by Red Hat versus a project that was taken in by Red Hat, something I've seen over the last three or four years, a lot of acquisitions they made, it was, let's take Open Stack for example. There is a big survey that's done twice a year that said what are people using and what are they interested in with Open Stack, and it felt like that was the buying guide for Red Hat because it was like, "Oh, okay, here's the sent-to-us stuff, "that was pretty interesting. "Well, we can't buy Konica, we'll buy Sento West," and that comes under the umbrella. "Oh, there's this storage management piece "that actually is open source that people "are using for Open Stack, well let me buy that one, too." So Red Hat has become inquisitive, but it's to get deeper engagement in the community. They are all Open Source so always there is that balance in big companies of what do I do with R & D and what do I do with M & A? And Red Hat has done both. I think they've done a good job of moving the industry forward. Innovation is a lot of times a buzz word, but they do some good stuff. They contribute a lot. People here are very positive about what's going on. Just because they haven't created the next flying car or things like that. >> But they're on that. We heard here that they're thinking about it. I mean, I think that's also, I didn't mean to ask the question insinuating that they're not innovating, but I do think that particularly at a time where we are seeing Microsoft years of no growth, Intel, stalled growth, you know, what is Red Hat's secret sauce, and also what is going to the breaking point for these other lagging enterprise companies? When will we see some new ideas and fresh perspective? >> Yeah, it's interesting 'cause we write this whole, the shift of what's happening with cloud, the wave of the machine-learning, the augmented intelligence or artificial intelligence, how much is that going to ding the traditional companies, especially the infrastructure companies. Red Hat touches it, but they're much broader. Their growth, they're an Open Source company. It's interesting. I've seen a lot of other companies, the Open Sourced-based ones, "Oh, we're not "an Open Source company. "We're an enterprise software company," or "software company." I'm sure we asked Red Hat if they were a software company, they will say well, of course, like everything we deliver is software, but at their DNA, they are Open Source, and that kind of sets them apart from the pack even though there are other examples Dave Vellante went through this morning of other companies that are heavily involved in Open Source, struggling with that how do we monetize Open Source. >> Well, is it a problem with the business model? Why is it so challenging? >> It's a great question. The first time I interviewed Jim Whitehurst, it's like "Jim, why aren't there more billion dollar Open Source companies," and his answer was, you know, Not being flippy," he's like, "Look, selling free is hard." >> Yeah, that's a great point, but I think that we should, we need to dig a little deeper and hopefully we can get to the bottom of that by day three. >> Absolutely, and I tell ya, I'm sitting here listening to, you know, we'll be doing the Cloud Foundry Summit in June there, which is pivotal as making a lot of money with that, but most of the other companies not doing so much. We were just a Docker Con. A couple weeks ago, Docker Company seems to be growing, doing well. They just changed their CEO today so hot news out on SiliconANGLE.com. Ben Golub, the CEO, I just interviewed him a couple weeks ago and now he's moving the board, but they're bringing the Chairman of the Board to be CEO, so we look at all these companies: Cloudera just IPO'd. Hortonworks is a public company. These companies that have Open Core or Open Source as a major piece of what they're doing, none have had the just measured growth and success that Red Hat does, so you know, Red Hat has a case study. It still seems to be one that stands alone category by themselves, but you know, partnering and growing and doing great, and it's exciting to cover. >> Day two, anything you're particularly excited about? >> Yeah, so I got a taste of the AWS-enhanced partnership talking about how Open Shift is going to have deeper integration and we talked a little bit with Paul Cormier so I suspect Jim Whitehurst will be talking to him about it. We have one of the main guys involved in that from Red Hat side will be on our program tomorrow. So the keynote tomorrow, I'll be watching here. Maybe there'll be a special guest during the keynote talk about that announcement some, but you know, obviously a space we watch real closely. We had Optum, one of the customers on today, he said, "I use Open Shift and I'm using Amazon and want to do it most and this is a game-changer for me," so we think this is really interest to watch, really, you talked about maturity early in this segment here, the maturity of hybrid cloud. If Amazon starts to get deeper into the data centers, partnering with companies like Red Hat and like VMware, that will help them to stave off some of the competition that's coming at them. (mumbles) to Microsoft and Google who's getting Cooper Netties everywhere. Lots more to dig in with. There's some announcements today but a lot more to come and you know, more customers, more partners, more Red Hatters. >> That's great, great. Brought to you by the Linux Foundation. >> Hey, welcome back everybody, Jeff Frick here with theCUBE, we are winding down at Open Networking Summit 2017, it's quite a conference. A lot of buzz about open-source as it goes into the networking space and continues to find traction. A lot of big companies donating projects to open-source, and then of course 5G and IoT, and the innovation never stops. So, Scott, really enjoying having Scott Raynovich cohost with us for these last couple days. Scott, what'd you think? >> Thanks again, Jeff. It's been a great show, lots of activity, some good news flow, actually announcements, and people opening up to us about open-source. As you said, lots of good stuff. >> Right. So I should've checked the tape from 2014, 'cus I think you actually co-hosted theCUBE at ONS in 2014, a long time ago. But clearly the narratives are changing quite significantly from there. >> Totally different world. >> You've been following this thing forever. So, before we get into some of the specifics, just kind of your general impressions of direction, and speed in that direction, as we continue to evolve. >> Sure, sure. Well, we talked a little bit about it with Martin, and that Martin kind of talked about in his keynote, how when he started Nicira, which for those of you who don't follow the SDN world, was kind of one of the first big open-networking startups, you know, let's have our code base be based on open-source, and have commodity hardware, run the software so anybody can swap in any hardware and run the software. That's the concept of open-networking and SDN. As Martin pointed out, when he started, it was like a speculative academic project. And he had no idea what it would become, and he pointed out it's now, after it was acquired by VMware, it's now a billion dollar business. And then we have other people, like AT&T, talking about in the keynote, John Donovan talking about how they're moving from 30% SDN open-networking last year, to more than 50%. So they're going to cross over, so that the majority of their network will be based on homegrown open-networking technology. Leveraging a lot of this open-source, that is the main topic of this show, which is run by the Linux foundation, which has become kind of the giant mega aggregator of networking open-source technologies. So, the main message is, we've gone from the academic speculative phase, to the actual let's get this stuff into production, let's run networks on it, and let's deliver your YouTube videos faster. >> Right, right. And as you look at the sponsor sheet behind us, right, a lot of startups, a lot of innovation, that comes with open-source. But you've still got Cisco, and Juniper, and the incumbents, and we had Dave Ward on from Cisco. So as you look at kind of the incumbent positionings, that benefited from a non open-source world, and dedicated, integrated boxes. >> Absolutely. >> How do you see them reacting and shifting in this new kind of market paradigm? >> Well, the first thing is, they all like to talk about software more than the hardware, right? 'Cause you notice that the discussion tends to focus on software these days. So they know that these hardware platforms are being commoditized, and you have these third-party manufacturers, that are coming out with these so-called "white boxes", which is the generic third-party hardware, that can run all the software. So, Juniper and Cisco are obviously, they have lots of software products, but you see from their acquisition strategies, they're focusing on buying software companies now, and they want to become known as software companies. And, I think, you know, they have a shot. They certainly haven't, lets not, say that Cisco hasn't stopped selling network gear, they're still a huge power in the space. >> Jeff Frick: There's a lot of it (laughs) >> And it's not like everybody is running out to buy commodity hardware, they're still looking for people to help them integrate, people to help provide service and support. The so-called, "throat to choke." >> One throat to choke, right, right. >> Yeah so, you know, that's kind of where they're moving. But obviously some of these companies are big oil tankers and you don't turn them around in a day. >> Right. And then we had Intel on, interesting conversation about 5G. Basically, the message being, 5G is now, you're saying, coming back from Mobile World Congress, it's not quite now. But really, the point was, we're preparing for it coming, which is why the preparation is now. So again, your prospective on 5G, interesting keynote this morning, you're talking about orders of magnitude of change, in the mobile network data capacity, over all these various iterations, and how it's really moving to, from, you know, voice to data, but now, not only from data, from people, but obviously things, internet of things. So, as you look at that kind of evolution, it's coming, right? It's coming in a big, big, big, way. >> Totally, totally. Yeah, I mean 5G is a, I mean, we could talk about 5G all day long. There's so many questions and debates about it. You know, Sandra Rivera, who we had on, from Intel, had some really good points, which is, if you're providing the fundamental technology like Intel, that the chips for the NFE Box, is the chips for the radio. The end to end solution in the semi-conductor space, you obviously have to invest now, and prepare for 5G. The standard won't be ratified or complete 'til, at least, well, they're saying possibly late 2018, but everybody really thinks it's 2019, 2020. But, the biq question is the applications, to your point. There's kind of this explosion of these new wireless WAN technologies, if you will, and internet of things is driving a lot of that. You know, you hear about the self-driving cars,right? >> Right, right. >> The trucks that are going to communicate back to HQ, and tell the boss where they are all the time, and how much fuel they're consuming, and how fast they're going, what their average. This Internet of Things market, self-driving cars, that's going to drive the need for more sophisticated mobile networks. But in industrial space, there's a different need, for very low power, low bandwidth, there's a WAN technology called LoRa, LoRa WAN, which is different from 5G. So, what people are trying to figure out with 5G, is the applications. Where does it fit in? What is, actually, 5G? Verizon has announced a point to point 5G pilot project. It's really "pre 5G", you know 'cause 5G isn't here, but they're kind of experimenting with, as a fiber replacement. Jeff needs faster broadband, he doesn't want to wait for the truck to come in and install. >> Jeff Frick: And dig the cable. >> The cable maybe will have 5G, as a new last mile solution, point to point, or point to point for businesses, you know, the big oil derrick, that needs a big pipe. There's many different applications that are being discussed. You know, for 5G. >> And is the timing of the standard, is it just kind of going through its natural stages? Or are there a couple of, you know, kind of key items that are still being hashed out, that they can't come to agreement, or is just kind of working its way. >> Oh, there's many, many items. I mean, I'm not technically sophisticated enough to dive into all the different. They'll argue about, you know, the protocols for authentication. Exactly how much bandwidth do we need? Are there different flavors of it? A lower bandwidth flavor versus a gigabit flavor. What are the chip sets going to look like? It's a very complex standard. But more importantly, on the business side, the carriers are asking, "How much money are we going to have to spend, to deliver 5G? "And we just spent all this money on LTE "and all the licenses." (Jeff chuckles) >> And does LTE go away, when 5G comes, or they run those in parallel? >> It'll definitely co-exist. >> Jeff Frick: It'll still be there, right? >> Well, that's what I'm saying, that's the question. Like you, Jeff Frick, do you really need 5G now? And what are you going to pay for it? You need to pay so your kids can watch YouTube faster? >> No, but I definitely want my autonomous vehicle to hit the brakes on time, before I hit the pedestrian, so. There's definitely application. >> I didn't realize you had an autonomous vehicle. >> Not yet, but, you know, I'm hoping. If more people watch theCUBE, I'll get one faster. >> So next year, when you acquire your autonomous Tesla. >> Jeff Frick: Right, right, my autonomous, which they just sent the software download, which is amazing. That's a whole different story. Shifting gears, edge, lot of conversation about edge. We do a lot of stuff with G, and IoT, and as you like to say IIoT, the Industrial Internet of Things, and kind of, this whole concept of, you can't get everything back to the cloud, 'cause the speed of light is just too damn slow. >> Scott Raynovich: That's right, that's right. >> And we talked to Ihab Tarazi, from Equinix, and we talk about the edge at the devices, as you said, low power, nasty conditions, yes, we're alive, they're banging plates over there. But then he really talked about the edge of all the clouds, and really the edge in the data center side. Because most of this stuff is traveling peer to peer, direct connect, and having that edge between your organization and then back into all these various clouds. >> That's right, that's right. >> Pretty interesting take, as that kind of back end sophistication and interconnectivity, just gets tighter and tighter and tighter. >> Totally, totally. Google also talked about that, building a new B2, they call it the B2 peering network. If people don't realize, how sophisticated theses networks have to be, right? You think that you, you know, you download a video, and it's just out there, right? It's actually going through a private network possibly, you know, a Netflix, has their own network, then it's peering with your local ISP, it's peering somewhere with your last mile provider, or if you're on a mobile network, it might be getting to you a different way, and so the discussion of where the edge goes is very important because as you pointed out, with IoT computing processing, it takes a long time, as we see with Siri all the time. Have you ever had that problem where Siri's not there? >> Google's always there. >> Yeah (laughs) >> Ok Google, no it works seemlessly, perfectly all the time. >> Okay, you're an Android guy, so yeah. >> Not quite. (laughs) >> So when you ask that question, to Siri or Google, it's going back all the way to the cloud and making that computation, back somewhere in the cloud. So the question is, where should that computation happen? When Jeff Frick needs his breaks, to avoid knocking over the (laughs) >> Unless it's a criminal, that's a different piece of software, you actually want to hit the criminal. >> You don't want that computation getting hung up in the cloud, right? So that's what the debate about the edge is. >> It's fascinating, it's why I love being in this business, it just continues to evolve and change over time. So last thing really, we are at the Open Networking Summit, it's a Linux Foundation show, Linux took this over a litle while ago, and as you said earlier, this huge move to move a lot of these open-source projects to the Linux Foundation, for them to really provide a home, if you will, and a set of resources, and a set of, everything from the 501(c)(3), and everything else you need. AT&T talked about delivering their project open-sourced, today. We heard earlier from Dell EMC, making a contribution. So as you look at the evolution of open-source, and Linux Foundation, as a subset, and how it impacts this networking and software-defined networking catching up to, software-defined compute and software-defined storage. How significant is that, as a driver of this adoption? >> Well, it's a big move. Most of the folks here at ONS are really, more in a telecom world, if you think of networking. What's happened to networking over the last decade, it's moved from enterprise, more to cloud and telecom, right? If you're in enterprise, you don't have to worry about building your network as much anymore, because most of your applications are heading to the cloud, right, with your service provider. So they are emulating what the cloud leaders did. The cloud leaders, such as, Google, were very aggressive with open-source. And the telecom players saw how fast they moved, by sharing code, and having more of a grassroots approach to building the code base. So that's, the reason why it's a big move, is that's a huge shift for telecom, right? 'Cause telecom has, for decades, built their proprietary network so. You want an LTE? Okay, we're going to do it our way, and we're going to work with a vendor, and take years to build this very specific proprietary network. And they've looked at cloud, and they want the speed. They want it to be able to move faster. So AT&T talked about how, when they deployed this new white box network, in production, they did it in three months. Which is, incredible. From the chip coming out of the foundry, to developing the box and the software and the service, it took them three to four months. Which is just an incredible change from the way these networks used to be built, it use to take years. >> Right, well the other really interesting plan, you teased it out, with the announcement with AT&T and this little company SnapRoute, some little startup, and we also heard it from Drew at Dell EMC, that, because of the open-source connection via the Linux Foundation, it exposes them and creates an ecosystem that they can now leverage all the smarts, and ingenuity, and innovation, coming out of a sea of startups, that they may or may not, have ever had a direct relationship with, and to leverage that internally. Pretty cool factor there. >> Exactly, it can all happen a lot faster, 'cause if its all based on open standards, you can, just plug it in, doesn't work the first day, but three months is a big change from, you know, two years. >> Donkey ears. Alright, so last word, you're launching a new thing. >> Oh, great! >> The new Scott Raynovich, so give us, what's the new name, where can people get information, and when do you actually launch? I know that's a little preview, but that's okay. >> It's called Futuriom. That's R-I-O-M. You know, 'cause, the names are running out on the internet, I don't know if you noticed that. (Jeff chuckles) And it launches in two weeks, and it's my hybrid blog research platform. So I'll have contributed information, we'll have big reports on industrial IoT. It's a premium service, but we'll also have free reports. So you can download free stuff, you can download premium reports you want to understand about all of these emerging technologies, and IoT, SD-WAN, cloud infrastructure, where it's going, Futuriom is really-- >> If you can't figure out the spelling, just tweet to Scott, and ask him, he'll send you a link. Sandy Carter, Silicon Blitz - PBWC 2017 #InclusionNow - #theCUBE


 

(click) >> Hey, welcome back everybody. Jeff Frick here with theCUBE. We're in downtown San Francisco at Moscone West at the Professional BusinessWomen of California Conference. 6,000 women, this thing's been going on for 28 years. It's a pretty amazing show. We see a lot of big women in tech conferences, but this is certainly one of the biggest and it's all about diversity, not just women. And of course, if there's a women in tech event, who are we going to see? Sandy Carter. >> Woo hoo! (laughs) >> Sandy, so great to see you. CEO of Silicon Blitz and been involved with PBWC for a while. >> I had suggested to Congresswoman Jackie when I saw her about three or four years ago about doing something special for the senior women. I proposed this leadership summit, and you know what they always say, if you suggest something, be prepared to execute it. She said, "Would you help us get this going?" Three years ago, I started the Senior Leaders Forum here, and yesterday we had that forum. We had 75 amazing women from all the great companies of California Chevron, Clorox, IBM, Microsoft Intel, Amazon, you name it all the great companies here in the Bay. Oh, Salesforce, Airbnb, all goes on. >> That was like a little conference in the conference? >> It was for C-Suite only and it was about 75 women. We do three TED Talks. We pick out talks that are hot but that are very actionable for companies. So yesterday, Jeff, we talked about millennials how to have inclusion of millennials in your workforce. 50% of the workforce by 2020 will be millennials. >> Is that a harder challenge than just straight-up diversity? >> This is really important. (laughs) It may be. But I had Allison Erwiener and Erby Foster from Clorox come and speak and they did a TED talk. Then we actually do little workshops to action. What would a millennial program look like? Our second topic was around innovation. How do you link diversity to innovation? There are so many studies, Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley, Harvard, DeLoy that shows there is a linkage but how do you get the linkage? For all these amazing diverse- >> The linkage between better business outcomes, correct? >> That's right. >> Better outcomes. >> That's right. In fact, the latest study from Harvard came out at the end of 2016 that showed not only with diverse teams do you get more innovation but more profitable innovation which is everybody's bailiwick today. We had Jeremiah Owyang of Crowd Companies who's a innovation expert come and really do that session for us. Then last but not least we talked about diversity and inclusion, primarily inclusion in the next century. What is that going to look like? We saw some facts about what's going on in changes in population, changes in diversity and then how we as companies should manage programs in order to tap into those changes. It was an awesome, awesome session. Then of course we had Pat Waters from Linkedin. She is chief talent officer there. She came and closed it out with her definition of inclusion. It was powerful. >> You won an award. >> I won an award, yes. >> Congratulations, what did you win? >> Game Changer for PBWC, and I'm really proud of it because last year we had Serena Williams speak and she was the first recipient so I guess you'd say I'm in great company because it's now Serena and I with this great award. >> Absolutely. Before we went on air we were talking about some of this next-gen diversity and thinking about getting that into programming languages and you brought up, there was some conversation around bots and obviously chat bots are all the rage and AI and ML is driving a lot of this but ultimately someone's got to write the software to teach these things how to behave so you're going to run into the same types of issues if you don't have a diversity of the thinking of the way the rules and those bots work as you have in any other situation where you have singular thinking. >> I think Jeff, you're right on. In fact, I think it's really going to accelerate the desire for diverse teams. If you think about artificial intelligence machine learning, and bots you have to train the computer. The computer's not naturally smart. There is a team that actually uses a corpus of knowledge and trains the bot. If the data that goes in my dad always said, "Garbage in, garbage out." If the data that goes in is biased then the output is biased and we're seeing that now. For instance, I was just looking at some VR headsets and people are now looking at virtual reality. You know you get a little nauseous. They've been tweaking it with artificial intelligence so that you don't get as nauseous but it was done by all men. As a result, it greatly improved the nauseousness of men but not women. That's just one example. You want your product to go for 100% of the world. >> That's weird, you'd think that would be pretty biological and not so much gender-specific. >> You would, but there are apparently differences. We talked to a doctor yesterday. There's apparently differences in motion-sickness between the two and if you only have one set of data you don't have the other. >> But then there's this other kind of interesting danger with machine learning and I think we see it a lot in what's going on in the news and causing a lot of diversion within the country in that the algorithms are going to keep feeding you more of that which you already have demonstrated an affinity to. It's almost like you have to purposefully break the things or specifically tell it, either through active action or programming that no, please send me stuff that I'm not necessarily seeing all the time. Please give me stuff that's going to give me a diversity of points of view and opinion and sources because it feels like with your basic recommendation engine it's going to keep sending you more of the same and rat hole you down one little track. >> That is true, and that's why today we have a panel and we're going to be talking about especially for AI and bots you must have diverse teams. From the session this morning I really loved one of the speakers, Kim Rivera, from HP and she said, "It's hard, but we just said 'Look, we've got to have 50% women on the board. We've got to do this.'" I think the same thing's going to be true for AI or bots Jeff, if you don't have a diverse team, you will not get the right answer from a bot. Bots are so powerful, and I was just with a group of nine year old girls and we had a coding camp and I asked them, "What do you want to do?" All of them wanted to do bots. >> Really. >> They had all played with- >> What kind of bots- >> The Zootopia- >> Did they want to do? >> They all had played with a Zootopia bot from Disney. I don't know, did you see Zootopia? >> I did not see it. I heard it was a great movie. >> It's a great movie, animated movie of the year. >> Bunnies, bunnies, bunnies as cops, right? >> That's right. In fact, the bunny is what they made into a chat bot. 10 million kids use that chat bot to get a little badge. Now all the kids are into bots. They used bots to remind them to brush their teeth to do their homework. In fact, there was a chat bot written by a 14 year old boy in Canada that's a homework reminder. It's actually really quite good. >> Also I'm thinking of is the Microsoft little kid that didn't, I guess timing is everything. >> Timing is everything, that's right. >> That one didn't work so well. >> But I guess what I would just leave with people is that when you're looking at this great, great new technology for AI and bots in particular, you must have a diverse team. You must look at your data. Your data's got to be unbiased. Like you said, if you just keep doing the same old thing you're going to get the same old answer. You've got to do something different. >> You're doing all kinds of stuff. You're working with Girls in Tech on the board there. I think you're doing some stuff with the Athena Alliance who's driving to get more women on >> Boards. >> Boards. You're really putting your toes in all kinds of puddles to really help move this thing because it also came up in the keynote. It's not a strategy problem. It's an execution problem. >> That's right, and because I'm so passionate about tech I love tech and I see this linkage today that is been never really been there that strong before but now it's almost like if you don't have diversity your AI and bots are going to fail. Forester just said that AI and bots is the future so companies have to pay attention to this now. I really think it's the moment of time. >> We're running out of time. I'm going to give you the last word. What are one or two concrete things that you've seen in your experience that leaders can do, like came up today in the keynote tomorrow to really help move the ball down the field? >> I think one is to make sure you have a diverse team and make sure that it represents diversity of thought and that could be age, it could be gender it could be sexual orientation, race you got to look at that diversity of team, that's one. Secondly, just by having a diverse team doesn't mean you're going to get great output. You've got to be inclusive. You've got to give these folks great projects. Like millennials, give them a passion project. Let them go and do something that can really make a difference. Then third, I think you have to test and make sure what you're delivering out there represents that cognitive diversity of thought so make sure that you're not just putting stuff out there just to get it out there but really double-checking it. and it's all about diversity, not just women. Sandy, so great to see you. and you know what they always say, 50% of the workforce by 2020 will be millennials. but how do you get the linkage? What is that going to look like? and she was the first recipient if you don't have a diversity of the thinking so that you don't get as nauseous and not so much gender-specific. and if you only have one set of data in that the algorithms are going to keep feeding you and I asked them, "What do you want to do?" I don't know, did you see Zootopia? I heard it was a great movie. Brought to you by Intel. >> Okay, welcome back everyone, we're here live in Palo Alto for day two of two days of Mobile World Congress special coverage here in Palo Alto, where we're bringing all the folks in Silicon Valley here in the studio to analyze all the news and commentary of which we've been watching heavily on the ground in Barcelona. We have reporters, we have analysts, and we have friends there, of course, Intel is there as well as SAP, and a variety of other companies we've been talking to on the phone and all those interviews are on YouTube.com/siliconANGLE. And we're here with Chuck Tato, who's the marketing director of the data center of communications with Intel around the FPGA, which is the programmable chips, formerly with the Alterra Group, now a part of Intel, welcome to theCUBE, and thanks for coming on. >> Thank you for having me. So, actually all the rage Mobile World Congress Intel, big splash, and you guys have been, I mean, Intel has always bene the bellweather. I was saying this earlier, Intel plays the long game. You have to in the chips games. You got to build the factories, build fabs. Most of all, have been the heartbeat of the industry, but now doing more of less chips, Most of all, making them smaller, faster, cheaper, or less expensive and just more power. The cloud does that. So you're in the cloud data center group. Take a second to talk about what you guys do within Intel, and why that's important for folks to understand. >> Sure. I'm part of the programmable solutions group. So the programmable solutions group primarily focuses on field programmable gate array technology that was acquired through the Alterra acquisition at Intel. So our focus in my particular group is around data center and Coms infrastructure. So there, what we're doing is we're taking the FPGAs and we're applying them to the data center as well as carrier infrastructure to accelerate things, make them faster, make them more repeatable, or more terministic in nature. >> And so, that how it works, as you were explaining beforehand, kind of, you can set stream of bits at it and it changes the functionality of the chip. >> Yes. So essentially, an FPGA, think of it as a malleable set of resources. When I say that, you know, you can create, it's basically a fabric with many resources in an array. So through the use of a bit stream, you can actually program that fabric to interconnect the different elements of the chip to create any function that you would like, for the most part. So think of it as you can create a switch, you can create a classification engine, and things like that. >> Any why would someone want that functionality versus just a purpose-built chip. >> Perfect question. So if you look at, there's two areas. So in the data center, as well as in carrier infrastructure, the workloads are changing constantly. And there's two problems. Number one you could create infrastructure that becomes stranded. You know, you think you're going to have so much traffic of a certain type and you don't. So you end up buying a lot of purpose-built equipment that's just wrong for what you need going forward. So by building infrastructure that is common, so it kind of COTS, you know, on servers, but adding FPGAs to the mix allows you to reconfigure the networking within the cloud, to allow you to address workloads that you care about at any given time. >> Adaptability seems to be the key thing. You know kind of trends based upon certain things, and certainly the first time you see things, you've got to figure it out. But this gives a lot of flexibility, it sounds like. >> Exactly. Adaptability is the key, as well as bandwidth, and determinism, right? So when you get a high bandwidth coming into the network, and you want to something very rapidly and consistently to provide a certain service level agreement you need to have circuits that are actually very, very deterministic in nature. >> Chuck, I want to get your thoughts on one of the key things. I talked with Sandra Reddy, Sandra Rivera, sorry, she was, I interviewed her this morning, as well as Dan Rodriguez, and Caroline Chan, Lyn Comp as well. Lot of different perspectives. I see 5G as big on one hand, have the devices out there announcing on Sunday. But what was missing, and I think Fortune was the really, the only one I saw pick up on this besides SiliconANGLE, on terms of the coverage was, there's a real end-to-end discussion here around not just the 5G as the connectivity piece that the carriers care about, but there's the under-the-hood work that's changing in the Data Center. And the car's a data center now, right? >> Yeah. >> So you have all these new things happening, IOT, people with sensors on them, and devices, and then you've got the cloud-ready compute available, right? And we love what's happening with cloud. Infinite compute is there and makes data work much better. How does the end-to-end story with Intel, and the group that you're in, impact that and what are some of the use cases that seem to be popping up in that area. >> Okay, so that's a great question, and I guess some of the examples that I could give of where we're creating end-to-end solutions would be in wireless infrastructure, as you just mentioned. As you move on to 5G infrastructure, the goal is to increase the bandwidth by 100X and reduce the latency by orders of magnitude. It's a very, very significant challenge. To do that is quite difficult, to do it just in software. FPGA is a perfect complement to a software-based solution to achieve these goals. For example, virtual switching. It's a significant load on the processors. By offloading virtual switching in an FPGA, you an create the virtual switch that you need for the particular workload that you need. Workloads change, depending on what type of services you're offering in a given area. So you can tailor it to exactly what you need. You may or may not need6 high levels of security, so things like IPsec, yo6u know, at full line rate, are the kind of things that FPGAs allow you to add ad hoc. You can add them where you need them, when you need them, and change them as the services change. >> It sounds like, I'd never thought about that, but it sounds like this is a real architectural advantage, because I'd never thought about offloading the processor, and we all know we all open up or build our PCs know that the heat syncs only get bigger and bigger, so that people want that horsepower for very processor-intensive things. >> Absolutely. So we do two things. One is we do create this flexible infrastructure, the second thing is we offload the processor for things that you know, free up cores to do more value-added things. >> Like gaming for, my kids love to see that gaming. >> Yes. There's gaming, virtual reality, augmented virtual reality, all of those things are very CPU intensive, but there's also a compute-intensive aspect. >> Okay, so I've got to get your take on this. This is kind of a cool conversation because that's, the virtual reality and augmented reality really are relevant. That is a key part of Mobile World Congress, beside the IOT, which I think is the biggest story this year, is IOT, and all the security aspects of it around, and all that good stuff. And that's really where the meat is, but the real sex appeal is the virtual reality and augmented reality. That's an example of the new things that have popped out of the woodwork, so the question for you is for all these new-use cases that I have found that emerge, there will be new things that pop out of the woodwork. "Oh, my God, I don't have to write software for that, There's an app for that now." So the new apps are going to start coming in, whether it's something new and cool on a car, Something new and cool on a sensor, something new and cool in the data center. How adaptive are you guys and how do you guys kind of fit into that kind of preparing for this unknown future. >> Well, that's a great question, too. I like to think about new services coming forward as being a unique blend of storage, compute, and networking, and depending on the application and the moment in that application, you may have to change that mix in a very flexible way. So again, the FPGA provides you the ability to change all of those to match the application needs. I'm surprised as we dig into applications, you know, how many different sets of needs there are. So each time you do that, you can envision, reprogramming your FPGA. So just like a processor, it's completely reprogrammable. You're not going to reprogram it in the same instantaneous way that you do in software, but you can reprogram it on the fly, whatever you would like. >> So, I'm kind of a neophyte here, so I want to ask some dumb questions, probably be dumb to you, but common to me, but would be like, okay, who writes bits? Is it the coders or is it someone on the firmware side, I'm trying to understand where the line is between that hardened top of kind of Intel goodness that goes on algorithmically or automatically, or what programmers do. So think full-stack developer, or a composer, a more artisan type who's maybe writing an app. Are there both access points to the coding, or is it, where's the coding come from? >> So there's multiple ways that this is happening. The traditional way of programming FPGA is the same way that you would design any ASIC in the industry, right? Somebody sits down and they write RTL, they're very specialized programmers However, going forward, there's multiple ways you an access it. For one, we're creating libraries of solutions that you can access through APIs that are built into DPDK, for example on Xeon. So you can very easily access accelerated applications and inline applications that are being developed by ourselves as well as third parties. So there's a rich eco system. >> So you guys are writing hooks that go beyond being the ASIC special type, specialist programming. >> Absolutely. So this makes it very accessible to programmers. The acceleration that's there from a library and purpose-built. >> Give me an example, if you can. >> Sure, virtual switch. So in our platform for NFE, we're building in a virtual switch solution, and you can program that just like you know, totally in software through DPDK. >> One of the things that coming up with NFE that's interesting, I don't know if this y6our wheelhouse or not, but I want to throw it out there because it's come up in multiple interviews and in the industry. You're seeing very cool ideas and solutions roll out, and I'll give, you know, I'll make one up off the top of my head, Openstack. Openstack is a great, great vision, but it's a lot of fumbling in the execution of it and the cost of ownership goes through the roof because there's a lot of operation, I'm overgeneralizing certain use-case, not all Openstack, but in generally speaking, I do have the same problem with big data where, great solution-- >> Uh-huh. >> But when you lay out the architect and then deploy it there's a lot of cost of ownership overhead in terms of resources. So is this kind of an area that you guys can help simplify, 'cause that seems to be a sticking point for people who want to stand up some infrastructure and do dev ops and then get into this API-like framework. >> Yes, from a hardware perspective, we're actually creating a platform, which includes a lot of software to tie into Openstack. So that's all preintegrated for you, if you will. So at least from a hardware interface perspective, I can say that that part of the equation gets neutralized. In terms of the rest of the ownership part, I'm not really qualified to answer that question. >> That's good media training, right there. Chuck just came back from Intel media training, which is good. We got you fresh. Network transformation, and at the, also points to some really cool exciting areas that are going on that are really important. The network layer you see, EDFE, and SDN, for instance, that's really important areas that people are innovating on, and they're super important because, again, this is where the action is. You have virtualization, you have new capabilities, you've got some security things going down lower in the stack. What's the impact there from an Intel perspective, helping this end-to-end architecture be seamless? >> Sure. So what we are doing right now is creating a layer on top of our FPGA-based SmartNIC solutions, which ties together all of that into a single platform, and it cuts across multiple Intel products. We have, you know, Xeon processors integrated with FPGAs, we have discreet FPGAs built onto cards that we are in the process of developing. So from a SmartNIC through to a fully-integrated FPGA plus Xeon processor is one common framework. One common way of programming the FPGA, so IP can move from one to the other. So there's a lot of very neat end-to-end and seamless capabilities. >> So the final question is the customer environment. I would say you guys have a lot of customers out there. The edge computing is a huge thing right now. We're seeing that as a big part of this, kind of, the clarity coming out of Mobile World Congress, at least from the telco standpoints, it's kind of not new in the data center area. The edge now is redefined. Certainly with IOT-- >> Yes. >> And IOTP, which we're calling IOTP app for people having devices. What are the customer challenges right now, that you are addressing. Specifically, what's the pain points and what's the current state-of-the-art relative to the customer's expectations now, that they're focused on that you guys are solving. >> Yeah, that's a great question, too. We have a lot of customers now that are taking transmission equipment, for example, mobile backhaul types of equipment, and they want to add mobile edge computing and NFE-type capabilities to that equipment. The beauty of what we're doing is that the same solution that we have for the cloud works just as well in that same piece of equipment. FPGAs come in all different sizes, so you can fit within your power envelope or processors come in all different sizes. So you can tailor your solution-- >> That's super important on the telco side. I mean, power is huge. >> Yes, yes, and FPGAs allow you to tailor the power equation as much as possible. >> So the question, I think is the next question is, does this make it cloud-ready, because that's term that we've been hearing a lot of. Cloud-ready. Cause that sounds like what you're offering is the ability to kind of tie into the same stuff that the cloud has, or the data center. >> Yes, exactly. In fact, you know, there's been very high profile press around the use of FPGAs in cloud infrastructure. So we're seeing a huge uptick there. So it is getting cloud-ready. I wouldn't say it's perfectly there, but we're getting very close. >> Well the thing that's exciting to me, I think, is the cloud native movement really talks about again, you know, these abstractions with micro services, and you mentioned the APIs, really fits well into some of the agilenesss that needs to happen at the network layer, to be more dynamic. I mean, just think about the provisioning of IOT. >> Chuck: Yeah. >> I mean, I'm a telco, I got to provision a phone, that's get a phone number, connect on the network, and then have sessions go to the base station, and then back to the cloud. Imagine having to provision up and down zillions of times those devices that may get provision once and go away in an hour. >> Right. >> That's still challenging, give you the network fabric. >> Yes. It is going to be a challenge, but I think as common as we can make the physical infrastructure, the better and the easier that's going to be, and as we create more common-- >> Chuck, final question, what's your take from Mobile World Congress? What are you hearing, what's your analysis, commentary, any kind of input you've heard? Obviously, Intel's got a big presence there, your thoughts on what's happening at Mobile World Congress. >> Well, see I'm not at Mobile World Congress, I'm here in Silicon Valley right now, but-- >> John: What have you heard? >> Things are very exciting. I'm mostly focused on the NFE world myself, and there's been just lots and lots of-- >> It's been high profile. >> Yes, and there's been lots of activity, and you know, we've been doing demos and really cool stuff in that area. We haven't announced much of that on the FPGA side, but I think you'll be seeing more-- >> But you're involved, so what's the coolest thing in NFE that you're seeing, because it seems to be crunch time for NFE right now. This is a catalyst point where at least, from my covering NFE, and looking at it, the iterations of it, it's primetime right now for NFE, true? >> Yeah, it's perfect timing, and it's actually perfect timing for FPGA. I'm not trying to just give it a plug. When you look at it, trials have gone on, very significant, lots of learnings from those trials. What we've done is we've identified the bottlenecks, and my group has been working very hard to resolve those bottlenecks, so we can scale and roll out in the next couple of years, and be ready for 5G when it comes. >> Software definer, Chuck Tato, here from Intel, inside theCUBE, breaking down the coverage from Mobile World Congress, as we wind down our day in California, the folks in Spain are just going out. Covering Mobile World Congress 2017, brought to you by INTEL. >> Okay welcome back everyone to our special two days of coverage of Mobile World Congress 2017. I'm John Furrier, here in the Palo Alo Studios covering what's happening in Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. Of course this is our day two of wall to wall coverage. Eight a.m. to six p.m. for two days and of course, as we kick off our day two and get early morning here in California or mid morning, they're ending the day in Barcelona and all the news is dropping. Again, it's continuing the theme of 5G, IoT and the notion of the super demos, all the flare and glam around IoT, AI and everything else. On the phone right now in Barcelona, Spain, is our friend and analyst with the Futuriom Group, Scott Raynovich, who will also be co-hosting with the CUBE at ONS, Open Networking Summit. Longtime industry analyst, guru in the space around mobile, certainly SDN and what's going on. Scott, welcome and thanks for taking the time to call in from Barcelona. >> [Scott] Thanks, John. Great to be here, and also I might add some color to one thing you said, when you said the day was winding down. (John laughs) Apparently in Barcelona the day never ends. It just goes all the way through. >> Well the show is ending but now the real action happens, all the hallway conversations at dinner and certainly we know that you take a nap around this time and go out and get ready to burn the midnight oil 'til three in the morning. We have many stories of Barcelona, but let's get down to it. What's happened today in Barcelona? What's the big story? What are you seeing on the ground there? What's the vibe? Give us some insight into what's happening, the experiences you're having and what's the big stories today coming out of Mobile World Congress. >> [Scott] Yeah sure, John. Well there's, as you know, there's a lot of hype about a lot of buzz words, so you got to throw all the buzz words out there: IoT, 5g, self driving cars, VR, AR, augmented reality. If you run through the halls you see a lot of those gizmos and gadgets and I would say the scene has shifted a lot in recent years. As you know a couple years ago it was all about Samsung's big tablet or the latest phone and now it's more about these kind of more advanced technologies, they call them interactive technologies that we're going to see coming down the road the next few years, so there's lots of stuff. >> The show has been very telco orientated and still really is a device and telco show basically. The device guys had their moment in the sun on Saturday and Sunday, but Monday kicked off really the telco show. This is really about ... The telco is trying to figure out their future. Their core competency over the years has been how to provision subscribers and billing, and been trying to figure out the over the top, and now as you look at the software that's coming out with the 5g plus the end to end, some of the things happening at the network transformation area. There's some real action happening. I want to just get your thoughts on is this the time where we're starting to see the needle move on the progress of really bringing the kind of networks that are going to power the cool technologies and promises of use cases, whether it's e-sports up to driving cars that are essentially data centers. Huge amount of data problems, huge amount of network reconfiguration, is this the time where there is an inflection point? What's your thoughts? >> [Scott] Yeah, that's a great point. You have the service providers for a number of years have felt a little bit - I don't know what the word is - spurned by success. They created all this plumbing and they put this massive investment into LTE, broadband, that really enabled all these applications, but it was more people like Apple and Netflix and Amazon that kind of stole the show by leveraging that bandwidth for these new services. Cloud services, music services, of course Netflix, the most popular internet service in the world, and so the service providers kind of feel like 5G is another opportunity that they don't want to squander and so they're being very careful about how to position that. But to your point, they have realized that they absolutely need to virtualize their network because what's going to addle a 5G is you have this massive amount of bandwidth but you need to splice it up into different - they called them actually network slices - so that you can provide all these advanced services, and that's where the service providers want to figure out how they're going to monetize that. So it's certainly a launchpad for the technology and the somewhat maligned technology known as NFV, Network Function Virtualization, but I think that the pressure to get 5G out is going to accelerate their investment in NFV because they need that cloud platform to kind of serve up all these next generation services. >> Is the telco's NFV efforts going to make them more cloud ready in your mind? Is that the sentiment? Is it that, do they have to kind of do a lot of things right now? And the question is, what are the use cases if they are cloud ready and if they can get their act together, the network layer to power these aps that are going to be running on 5G, so you know? >> [Scott] Yeah, yeah. I think so, I mean they're progressing. AT&T makes periodic announcements that they've virtualized whatever it is, 30 or 40 percent of the network, and Verizon has a pretty interesting company Radisys, which recently got a 70 million dollar contract from Verizon to install NFV infrastructure. Now that's not ... 70 million dollars is a drop in the bucket in terms of capital spending for a small virtualization platform like Radisys, but that's a pretty big move and so I think you're seeing this stuff finally becoming real, and they are going to have, within a few ... We'll wait for them because they're a much more flexible platform. It's based on the cloud web scale model, where you snap in a bunch of servers and all the networking is virtualized and you can move things around in the cloud and they want to take advantage of new services they can offer, whether that's a virtualized enterprise security service, you know security service in the cloud where you go into the Verizon Data Center and you order it up and you have a cloud security model that it will protect you, or other what we call Virtual Network Functions, another hot area you've probably heard of SD-WAN. There are a lot of SD-WAN services being rolled out >> Cool >> and that's a virtualized WAN solution that doesn't require you to, say you have a bunch of branch offices around the world, you don't have to ship them all routers and then hook them up with expensive leased lines. You can kind of close them in with the cloud if you will, and there are a bunch of hot companies in that area, including Aryaka Networks, Velo Cloud, Viptela, which are all mentioned as active acquisition targets these days, so there's definitely still a lot of virtualization thought going on but I will say it took a backseat to, this year it took a backseat to 5g and IoT. >> Yeah great commentary. I got to say, I talked with Intel with an exclusive interview with Sandra Rivera from Intel GM, with Communications Network Platforms Group, and we were talking about the dynamics and I think the big IoT thing has been autonomous vehicles. Obviously smart cities is, you've got some surveillance, you've got cameras and stuff in towns and cities, and certainly the smart home. You can't move an inch in the industry without hearing about echo and google in the home, kind of voice activated automation. Then you've got media entertainment, you mentioned Netflix. You know all these things are essentially coming back to rear its data center environment. This is like the data center meets consumer, and we were commenting that the autonomous vehicle is essentially a data center on wheels and that there's going to be trade offs between low latency high bandwidth and true mobility. You know car is not going to be dictated by millimeter wave technology because they might have different frequencies, so this brings up this diversity of network. And so I'll get your thoughts on how you see the market evolving with the pressure for open source software, you mentioned SD WAN it's software defined, WAN software defined radio, software defined networks, software defined data center, the whole world is software defined so the role of open standards both on open source software as well as open wireless if you will, meaning not one vendor is going to own it, how do you grok that? How do you pull that picture together and how do you advise your clients on what this actually means for them and their impact? >> [Scott] Yeah that's a great question. Well, you kind of hit the nail on the head with the question, because I spent much of the show looking at all of the ... If you want to break it up into two buckets of things here, you talked about cloud and WAN, so the infrastructure that builds the data center but as you pointed out, this is a service provider show, so a lot of the discussion is around connectivity standards of course, and it's really amazing John. It's amazing. You know we can boil these things down into these neat little buzz words >> IoT and 5G - but just today, I talked to people about at least five different forms of IoT standards and of course 5G today was a super controversial topic. So let me just break those off one by one. With IoT connectivity, you have something called LoRaWAN, which is a open standard, an IoT open standard, and there's about 500 members signed onto the LoRaWAN alliance, including Cisco and IBM and China Electric, so that has a fair amount of momentum. It has certain characteristics. Very low bandwidth, and not in real time so it's, I'll just give you one example. If you want a connected cow, John, I saw a connected cow, and the idea is that is be large. When a massive operation wanted, you want to track your livestock, so you need a very low cost device that does that. That's an example. You also have so called MBIOT, which Cisco's pushing pretty hard narrow band IoT, with another standard that's going to be used for IoT applications. You have the 3GPP working on LPWAN, which is kind of like a 2G recycled for IoT. The characteristics of IoT have to be really cheap there has to be really low power, so you can't use LTE right? So that's another one. Then you have a couple of hot private companies. SigFox, which has over 100 million dollars funding, and it might even be hundreds of millions of dollars at this point, based in France. Another company called Ingenu, which is spun out of east San Diego qualcon hotbed with a lot of really interesting IT and they have a technology called RPMA, so those two companies are building networks worldwide based on proprietary standards. They've said, "We're going to build an IoT network, "a radio network for IoT all over the world, "and it's going to be based on our proprietary technology, "'cuz it works better," so that ... I just gave you IoT, right? Okay, and then you have 5G, which dozens of service providers (incoming call beep) all have different things about that and actually argued about 5G doesn't exist right? Right so you have Verizon rolling out a pretty standard 5G trial and then you have something called 5GNR, New Radio, which is a multi spectrum flavor of 5G that Qualcomm and are fooling around with, and then you have people like Nokia saying, "Woah, woah, woah slow down. We can't push 5G "before its time. We don't want it to fragment, you know? (vibrating phone) "We don't want it to just "splinter all over the place," >> Yeah. >> [Scott] You know, pull like an Android. So I don't know, that was a mouthful but if you- >> So what does it mean? Is it ... >> You get the idea of how these buzzwords, when you unpack them, they get really complicated. >> Is it forking? Is 5G essentially a land grab right now, or is this all part of the evolution in your mind, because it does seem that you need a catalyst. Obviously Intel's taking a leadership position. They've done a deal with Nokia. You've seen some Ericcson announcement but then you've got Qualcomm on the other side with Snapdragon and you know the competition between Intel and Qualcomm is at an all time high, certainly on the handset side. But at the end of the day, the network is the key at this point, and so the question is, is 5G going to be broken down by the forking? >> 5G is a hype grab, it's totally a grab. >> It's a hype grab. (laughs) >> [Scott] Because 5G will not exist for at least ... They won't be rolling it out 'til 2020 and I heard several people argue today that it's really 2021, so it's not a land grab until it actually exists, right? So it's all about positioning your marketing around it, but just to give you an example of one of the controversies today was accelerating. Should we accelerate to 5G? You know and then BT came out and said, "Well we have to be careful because it's really expensive." 5G is actually going to be more expensive than LTE. If you don't have the return on investment, you know you're going to kill yourself, so people are confused. >> Scott, Intel claims they're going to have 5G in Winter Olympics in Korea. That is what they told me on the record. Not sure if that is a trial network or is that going to be just some data stations? >> [Scott] Yeah they'll have some form of 5G. I mean what I'm trying to point out with all these things is when somebody says the buzz word, it doesn't mean one thing, right? >> Yeah. >> [Scott] It means like yeah, it means several things. And it'll certainly be pretty standard 5G trials. I'm just saying right now we don't even know what that is. Nobody has even settled on what the spectrum is for 5G. There's like been four different announcements about different spectrums and then you have this 5GNR thing which is a multi spectrum technology, so it's really hard to say. I'd be shocked if anybody at Intel definitively knows what 5G looks like at this point. >> Well certainly it begs a question for a follow up conversation around what is 5G. Certainly people will argue what that means in terms of bandwidth, but the question we had on The CUBE yesterday was, "What aps are even ready for a gigabyte "and what does that mean?" Is that fixed wire, is that true mobility, is that latency versus bandwidth, and et cetera et cetera. You know the debate will rage on. Honestly I just want to see more bandwidth. I love connectivity so. Alright Scott, thanks so much for taking the time. I got to ask you a final question. You know, what's the best party so far in Barcelona? What's the best tapas you've had? What's the scene like in and around town? What's some of the buzz? >> [Scott] (laughing) Well I haven't been to any big parties to tell you the truth, I've mostly been to private dinners. The food is amazing and so is the wine. >> Yeah. >> [Scott] It's pretty hard to go wrong in Barcelona. It's probably like a foodie's paradise I would say. >> Yeah it certainly is.
