We're in Santa Clara, California at the Churchills. It's the ninth annual awards banquet put on by the Churchills Club, and this year is all about leadership. We're excited to be joined by our next guest who knows a little bit about leadership. He's Carl Guardino, the president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. Carl, great to see you. >> Great to see you, too, Jeff. >> So what is the Silicon Valley Leadership Group all about? >> The Silicon Valley Leadership Group is an association of about 360, primarily innovation economy employers that want to make a positive, proactive difference here in the region, as well as in our state and across the United States. >> What are some of the hot topics that are on top of the plate right now? Because there is a lot of craziness kind of going on here in Silicon Valley. >> There is. But what we try to do is impact those issues that are as important to families in their living rooms as they are to CEOs in their board rooms. And here in the bay area, we call those THEE issues. An acronym, T-H-E-E. The T, traffic; H, housing affordability; E, education; and the fourth E, the economy. And we try to bring together diverse points of view for those areas that unite us, where we can actually solve some of those challenges. >> Right, and those are big, big challenges. And you work both with public as well as private groups to try to bring them together to make movement on those things. >> We're a bridge. And the first thing about a bridge is that you try to bring folks together to cross the bridge and work together. The second most important thing about a bridge is that you build them, you don't burn them down. And that's the role that we try to play with 360 highly engaged CEOs and c-suite officers. >> And it's only appropriate, because tonight you'll be sitting down in a conversation with the mayor of San Jose, Sam Liccardo, to kind of get into some of these issues. San Jose seems to be on a roll right now, a positive roll. A lot of positive news coming out of San Jose. >> Yes, and that always starts with leadership rather than luck. San Jose mayor Sam Liccardo, 10th largest city in the United States, has been able to strike that balance of being pro-innovation economy, while also caring deeply about his citizens, the residents of San Jose, 1,053,000, and how we make sure that we have a strong and vibrant economy, but also a great quality of life. >> Right. So how do you even begin to - we'll start with traffic. The T in the THEE. To address that issue, it's so multifaceted, right, it's so tied to jobs, it's tied to housing, it's tied to the growth of the economy, you know, unfortunately freeways are slow to build, public transportation's expensive, but we continue to see growth there. How do you kind of eat that elephant, one bite at a time, with something like traffic? >> Well the role of the leadership group is, again, by bringing people together to solve complex problems in a democracy with winning solutions. So we'd rather win than whine. And when it comes to traffic, one of our core competencies is actually to lead and run ballot initiatives to fund transportation improvements throughout the region and the state. In fact, in the last 30 years alone, I've had the pleasure of going on loan from the leadership group to run ballot campaigns for transportation improvements that have totaled 30 billion dollars in revenue through those measures, approved by voters to reach into our own wallets, rather than our neighbors, to build improvements that, this Christmas, in time to go into your stocking, we'll be bringing BART to San Jose, and working on the electrification of Caltrain, linking transit and better road improvements, making it better for all of us trying to travel throughout this region. >> Right. Good, we need it. >> We do. >> And on the housing, you know, because the housing is also very closely tied to traffic, and we see that the old days of single-family homes on big pieces of dirt, those are going away. They just can't support it in higher density areas like San Fransisco, San Jose, to bring those jobs next to that. So we're seeing a huge transformation in the housing space as well. >> And we need a huge transformation, both in transportation and in housing. And it's really the flip side to the same coin. T, for tails, or transportation; H, for head, or housing. And you have to make sure that you keep those linked. In fact, one of our initiatives right now is to work with all six, fixed rail transit operators throughout the nine bay area counties. What are the current and future uses of those half miles around every fixed rail transit stop that you have? How do we maximize those uses? Here's a great example. What Google wants to do in downtown San Jose, at the Diridon SAP station, is only because of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group's work to bring BART to that station, electrify Caltrain, light rail is there, Amtrak, ACE, et cetera, and they want to have 20 to 25 thousand future Google employees there within the next 10 to 12 years. Why? Because it is a sustainable location that doesn't rely on you and I slogging through traffic in our single-occupant cars. >> Right. I can't wait to see what you guys do to El Camino. That's the next one that's going to - as somebody once said in one of these traffic things, it's just a bunch of old retail stores with empty parking lots, just placed by Microsoft. Or excuse me, by Amazon. So I think we'll see a big transformation with housing and jobs, you know, along that quarter, which happens to parallel the Caltrain, and is near and dear to my heart. So a lot of good opportunities I think to make improvements. >> Jeff, there is. And as hard as transportation and traffic solutions are to put into place, housing is even tougher. And while Bay Area residents think housing is the bigger crisis, the solutions are tougher to come about, because the community isn't as united on those solutions. So the role that a group of employers like ours play, is how do we bring people together around solutions that make sure that we build homes, that are good for everyone in our society. >> Well Carl, I like your positive attitude, a lot of winning and no whining, so I wish you nothing but success. Brought to you by VMware. >> Hey, welcome back to theCUBE's exclusive coverage of VMware's Radio 2019, Lisa Martin with John Furrier, John, we started really bright and early this morning with a very excited Pat Gelsinger. VMware, this is the fifteenth Radio, Radio is R&D innovation offsite. There's about 1800 VMware engineers from lots of B.U.s, very competitive event, very passion driven event, and really just is a... what a great manifestation of the VMware culture and the spirit of innovation. >> This is the best of the best event, and the story around Radio 2019 is really a cumulation of multiple years, as you pointed out, of cultural innovation, engineering. VMware has always been an engineering culture, coming out of Stanford, and from day one they've had that guiding principle. They've also been open and transparent, as we heard on theCUBE interviews today, that has created the culture of community. Open Source dives beautifully into it. And so radio is about that cumulation of the talent. It's the best of the best internally, they submit papers, it's a bottoms-up process, so it's truly a meritocracy from an engineering standpoint. But it's a culture of engineering, and their job is to come up with the future, and what's notable about this event is it's the second year now theCUBE's been here. Last year was the first year they've invited press, so three outlets from the media were allowed, were one of them. And we get exposed, we get to look under the hood, and look at the engine of innovation coming down the road for VMware and their partners. So, it's a super exciting event, Radio is a community within VMware that's now global, 50% outside of North America and the United States, all a bottoms-up, a hive mind, we heard that here. Really successful for VMware to continue this, bringing the press in, get the stories out there, take that transparency and open message from the content. We can share it, we get access to the data, it's a beautiful co-creation formula with theCUBE and VMware. It's a success, and their challenge is can they take it global and extend it. >> And this is day four of Radio19 and you can hear the amount of people that are still here, still passionate, these are projects that they're doing outside of their day jobs. So, the transparency that you talked about, I loved when we were talking with David Tennenhouse about the bottoms-up approach, that this is not a set agenda, we're going to talk about Blockchain, and IOT, and security, this is driven as you said, from thousand-plus submissions of people who want to have papers presented here. >> People don't want to leave, because this is like a kid in the candy store, it's like being intoxicated with technology and there's so much content here. Now that's also a bellwether and a barometer of the company. If R&D is weak, you don't have the innovation. There's companies that don't really invest in R&D, they wouldn't have this kind of mojo or this kind of excitement. But VMware prides themselves on doing 15% R&D, that's way outside the box. The rest is all done within the constraints of what they're doing in the market, so relevance is high, but still room to play and dream the future. And again, I've always believed that you can't dream it up, you can't build it. >> Now of course, VMware, all about, as every business should be, we needed to be developing products and solutions and services that the market needs to solve real-world problems. One of the cool things we learned about today, John, is, from the EMEA CTO John Bagley, is the CTO Ambassador program, the CTOA program, where there are folks, and this is also a competitive program, it's a couple, I think you said a four year tenure to get folks through the program, but being out in the field, in customer sights, learning about all these enterprise organizations, what they actually need, so in that spirit of openness that you talked about, they're bringing in customer information, building and fostering relationships, so that what they're investing in from an R&D standpoint, is going to be able to solve customer problems that they don't even know they have today. >> Yeah, that Champion program, that Ambassador CTO program, that Joe mentioned, what's interesting about VMware, and this is what I love, I admire about the company, as well as companies like AWS and Amazon web services, the people are smart and they think about scaling. So, that's kind of a cliché these days, how does it scale, makes you look smarter if you ask that question, but VMware actually thinks about how to scale, and so, the problem that they had was, they had these field CTOs that were out evangelizing with customers half the time, and doing internal real CTO work around architecture with the teams to build great stuff and move that to market, they couldn't scale. So they used their community of their own ecosystem to find people to come in and replicate. You heard Joe Bagley, "I had to be Steve Herrod," cause he can't be everywhere. That's the mindset of this culture, and I think they have real opportunity to crush it at Open Source, they have a real opportunity to take the Radio culture, and superimpose that in as a new way to do work, new way to create distributed, decentralized teams, and ultimately better software, and at the end of the day, they have to attract great engineers and keep them, work on hard problems, because, Pat's ambitious. And we know Pat. What he says, and what's real, they're all catching up to Pat. Pat has this great vision and he's nailing it, but the engineers got to build what Pat says they got to do. When he says "I'm abstracting away Kubernetes, as an abstraction layer," yeah that sounds simple, but it's really hard to do. >> Absolutely, and I want to get your perspective too, on this, not just the culture of innovation, that you talked about, that VMware has had for a very long time, but also in the spirit of VMware leveraging their innovation programs like Radio, to attract and retain this high quality talent, from your perspective, how does a conference like this, which is kind of academic in nature, it's kind of like a science fair for engineers, how does it differ from some of the other companies, like a Google that say "we have innovation programs." In your perspective, how is this different? >> Well, Google actually is fairly similar in the sense that they came out of Stanford, they have that kind of ethos of academic. Facebook is exactly the opposite, he wants to be Bill Gates, and be like Microsoft, as I was saying the other day. Google's internal stuff is pretty strong, they don't externalize it, and that's why Google Cloud's having such a hard time gaining market shares, that they're not good on the external game. Their thing is the SAS offering, it's all programmable. They're awesome at technology, but they're not good at externalizing it. So, I think Google's struggle is not a lot of internal to external translation. What Radio has done successfully, and we heard a little bit here, was they took it from the Palo Alto bubble, which Google lives in, and they've extended it beyond to the rest of the world, so 50% of the Radio attendees here are from outside the United States. So what they got right is, they've actually externalized it better, they're allowing press to come in, the storytelling that we're doing, that's going on, the collaboration here, is about people collaborating, that's why this successful. And it a world where everything's open, and information's freely available, there's a an audience for "high end," tech nerd activity. This is, this meets the high bar of the geeks of the best of the best, and so why isn't it being covered? Well, it is. We are here. >> You're right, we are here. And also, if you look at, it's one thing for companies to have innovative cultures, but it's another thing, some of the key elements that really can catalyze innovation are partnerships, diversity, that come to mind, both of which VMware does very, very well. Big foci on partnerships, which we've seen and heard about here as well, as well as, not just diversity and gender and things, but also thought diversity, and how groups from completely disparate business units can come together, either organically, before Radio, or even probably, can you imagine the hallway conversations that are going on here? Where suddenly, these different ideas are coming together. Partnerships and diversity are really catalysts for VMware's innovation- >> Well that's a great point, one of the first, on the partnership side, clearly a catalyst, because of multi-cloud and cloud native, seeing that. Diversity is a homerun for them, because they are a diverse culture, but look, how many women are here? Not many, I mean still, more than some, still a lot more work to do. But diversity of opinion, the inclusion that VMware has, they're a very inclusive company. So, it's not like, I just don't think there's enough population of women, in my opinion, that are in the community. But they're inclusive, there's different people with different backgrounds, different technical backgrounds, so from so from a quote "diversity" skill set, it's a melting pot. You've got people talking about carbon fiber, sustainability, to kubernetes, all kind of coming together. So I think diversity's a real strength for them. >> So we heard, I know you had a really, really intriguing Blockchain conversation today. We talked a lot about some of those emerging technologies, Vmworld 2019, which theCUBE will be at, for, I believe the tenth year, it's just around the corner. What excites you about some of the things you heard today that you think we might hear more about in August? >> What excited me about VMworld is what Pat Gelsinger said off camera, that it's going to be a ton of news, a ton of activity, and I think if you look at what VMware's doing, again, like I said, Pat Gelsinger's got an amazing vision, and I think he's cleared the runway, or sailed away from the icebergs. VMware's in a really good market position right now. They have great growth going on, and, look, the organic innovation here at Radio, amazing. Content's solid, people are still buzzing for it, they could probably stay here for a week, two weeks. Acquisitions, CloudHealth, Bitnami, again, two smart acquisitions, they're making smart deals, the ecosystem's evolving, it's a new VMware. So I think Vmworld is going to be, have a spring to its step this year, I think you'll see a lot of action, they'll be two CUBE sets again this year, it's going to be a different company next ten years, VMWare, than it was the past ten years. >> Well, I'm excited to be there with theCUBE, two sets as you mentioned, my interest is certainly heightened after some of the things we heard today. I'm John Furrier with Stu Miniman, as well as David Vellante, who has been co-host, he's out there getting stories and getting all the scoop. We are here with two great guests, Cube alumni's, Aparna Sinha, the Group Product Manager at Google, and Chen Goldberg, director of Engineering, Google. Both the architects of the big wave that we're riding. Containers, kubernetes, and anthos. Guys, great to see you, thanks for coming on again. >> Aparna: Thanks for having us, great to be here. >> Chen: Thank you. >> So, you were smirking last night when we saw each other at the press gathering, knowing what was coming. I watched the keynote, it was awesome. I didn't get a chance to see the spotlight session you guys just had, but Anthos, obviously the rebranding and the additional integration points for making things run end to end, this is our dream come true, Devops Infrastructure as Code is happening, we've been talking about this for a while, you guys are behind it all, give us the update. >> So we've been hard at work over the last eight months since our last Next. Can you believe that it's only been eight months? Last year we were here announcing GK On Prem. This year we've rebranded CSP to Anthos and enlarged it and we've moved it to GA. So that's the big announcement. In our spotlight we actually walked through all the pieces and gave three live demos, as well as had two customers on stage and really the big difference in the eight months is while we're moving to GA now we've been working throughout this time with a set of customers. We saw unprecedented demand for what we announced last year and we've had that privilege of working with customers to build the product, which is what's unique really. So we had two of those folks up on stage talking about the transformation that Anthos is creating in their companies. >> I want to get to the customer focus a little bit later, but I want to just get it out on the record while you're here, because there's not a lot of time on stage other than the great demo Jennifer Lynn did. What actually is the difference, what's the new things, because obviously its a rebrand, some people might say, "Oh, they're just rebranding the announcement from last year", what were the new things, what are the new elements of Anthos, why is it important, what does it mean, what's under the covers, tell us what's new. >> Chen: So, first of all lets talk about, "What is Anthos?" Anthos is a Google opinionated solution that lets you right once, deploy anywhere. Really, the key thing about Anthos is choice. What we've been hearing from our customers, how much they appreciate choice in their journey to the cloud and modernization in general. The main thing that we have announced is that everything we have announced last year is GA. So talking about GKE On Prem, Anthos config management and our marketplace and the control plane from managing multiple classes, all of that has moved to GA. when thinking about choice, we've added new capabilities and one choice that customers are thinking about, "Do I need to choose a single cloud provider?" I had a discussion just yesterday with one of the customers and they said that when they exclude a cloud provider from their strategy, they're actually blocking their own innovation and that might get even a bigger risk for them. So we know that customers are adopting a multi cloud strategy. The big announcement here is that we are moving towards, or maybe we are even leaning more into multi cloud, we already had other solutions that we were talking about and definitely with Kubernetes and Istio talking about open API's, but we are leaning in towards multi cloud strategy, so that would be one. The second thing that talks about choice, is "How do we start?" One thing we are hearing from our customers is the importance that they want to innovate with what they have. So Anthos migrate, lets them take their existing applications, package applications that are running today on VM's and onboard to Anthos automatically and see value. So those are the top two announcements and I think the third one would be around all the partnerships, which is part of the people we've been working with in eight months. >> That's awesome. >> Stu: I'm sorry, the migrate piece, that's not GA yet, am I understanding? >> No, it's moving to beta. >> So Stu, you and I have been talking about applications, Renaissance, multi cloud, obviously is a reality for enterprises. Now you've got the hybrid model, this is kind of in the main themes of what this all means with anthem. So its holistically looking at the cloud, as you said, not just Google Cloud. This is a key nuance, its kind of embedded in the announcement, but its not just Google Cloud. >> That's right and I think in that sense, Anthos is a game changer, its not just an incremental improvement to something that's existing for customers. Its not like its just something faster or cheaper or adds more features, its actually something that allows them to do something they couldn't do before, which is, have a consistent platform that they can use to write once and deploy their workloads anywhere, On Prem, in GCP and that we had, but expanding that to any cloud, not just Google Cloud. >> I want to get your guys' thoughts here because you've got the brain and trust inside Google Cloud, because I've been talking on the cube about this and publicly. There seems to be confusion around what multi cloud means, and a company is an enterprise, there's a lot of things going on in the enterprise, so certainly the enterprise will have multiple workloads. There's certain situations that some people say, "Hey, this workload would be great on this cloud, this workload would be great on that cloud." So its not about having a cloud for cloud's sake. "We have to standardize on Google, we have to standardize on Amazon." Instead, what I hear, and I want to get your thoughts and reaction to is, I'd like to have a workload that has data, highly addressable, really low latency for this workload, and a cloud for this workload, but together its multi cloud, this seems to be a trend, do you guys agree with that? Is that something that you're seeing, is that the main message here? It's not so much standardized on the cloud, but have multiple clouds, pick the right cloud for the job, kind of philosophy. What's your thoughts, this is kind of a philosophical question. >> So this is exactly what we are hearing from our customers about their multicloud strategy and exactly what you are saying. This is actually for most of them is a reality, either because they have been organically building things in the cloud or they want to get to multiple geographies, and it's not only a cloud vendor, we need to remember that On Prem is where most of their workloads are still running and where they still need to innovate or when you talk about retail or banks, they have their branches and their stores where they need to have compute at. Really, services are spread all over. Now the question is, this kind of situation creates a lot of risk for our customers. Security risk and talent fragmentation, which are related, so how can I manage all of those environments? >> The risk is multi cloud, or one cloud? >> So multi cloud actually increases the risk even further, so they already have a multicloud reality. That's their strategy forward, but how can they mitigate risk with that reality? We are talking about kubernetes gave you portability of workloads, but how can you do portability of skills and making sure that your talent can really focus where it matters and not be spread too thin, so this is one example that I think Anthos is really unique about using it from our hosted control plane on GCP. >> So let the workloads decide what's best for the workloads and let the clouds naturally use kubernetes. >> Yeah, I mean one thing I've seen in our customer base is, you know the line of business wants to innovate and they want to use the best service for whatever it is that they're doing and the different clouds have different types of services, they have different strengths. So, you don't want centralized IT to say, "Hey, no actually you can't do that, you have to follow this policy." We've seen many examples where centralized IT is taking months to approve cloud services and they've got a backlong of hundreds of services that they need to approve. That's really slowing down innovation, and, "why is that happening?" Because you don't have a consistent platform that you can run and use across clouds. Like you said, kubernetes actually solves that and so that's why were introducing Anthos based on kubernetes, so that you don't have that risk, you don't have that fragmentation and you can innovate faster. >> Lets do one more question and with compounds to complexity is old procurement rules might slow it down. I've got to buy this. So the old baggage on procurement standards, Its kind of a moving train. >> Yeah, I mean enterprise has its policies, we've been talking to some of they largest banks, we had HSBC on stage with us, we had (mumbles), which is one of the largest grocers, we have kohls, these companies have policies and they have compliance requirements and these are very valid compliance requirements and they need to be adhered to. Its just, how can you speed that process up, and if you have a platform that actually spans environments, it doesn't look different in each environment, you can imagine that simplifies the process, it simplifies the approval process because the platform's already pre-approved and then new services as they come online, if they follow a certain pattern, they're kubernetes approved services, then it's much easier to approve them and it's much easier to unlock that productivity without increasing risk. >> If I could poke on that just a little bit (mumbles) approved services isn't a term I've heard yet. There are dozens of providers that have kubernetes, Anthos I know is different but if I go out there and use kubernetes from a different cloud provider or a different service provider. Kubernetes is not a magic layer, everybody builds lots of stuff on top of that and a concern is if I just have a platform that spans all of these environments. There's skillset challenges and do I also get a least common denominator. Cloud is not a utility, GCP is very different from the other clouds, how do I balance that and how do I make sure that I'm actually being able to get the most out of why I choose a specific platform or cloud. >> That's where Anthos is that layer that actually is more than kubernetes. We have, in Anthos, an opinionated platform from google that utilizes kubernetes but it isn't just pure kubernetes, as you would experience it from the open source with the fragmentation, we're working with certified kubernetes distributions and we've got this marketplace where the applications that are in the marketplace have been tested and certified and are supported by a set of partners as well as by Google Cloud to run on these different distributions that you connect and register with Anthos. >> To give maybe another perspective of that, what we have seen with kubernetes is that customers do appreciate that consistency. They have been demanding, for example, that all kubernetes distribution will be conformed. We had that announcement when we were on stage today about consistency and how we can integrate PKS into Anthos. I think what customers are telling us, they don't want us to innovate in that layer. So they appreciate us using open API's and using sensibility which is predefined and actually allows that interoperability of services and this is something that is really in the foundation of Anthos. >> Well you guys have done a great job, we've been following the progress from day one and watching the foundation of Google Enterprise. You guys have been big contributors, congratulations to your work, it's great to see the progress and it seems to be, the train's moving faster on the tracks, so congratulations. I guess my final question for you guys is, boil down Anthos. To the folks watching that are in IT, they're trying to solve some problems, a lot of people realize and wake up, "wow I've got multiple clouds." That's not (mumbles), that's reality. They see billing statements from multiple vendors how they still want maybe hybrid, what does Anthos mean to those people? What is it about, what is it? I'm trying to get bumper sticker. What's the bottom line, what is Anthos? >> So Anthos gives you a choice without the risk. That means that they can choose an existing service or a new green field service to use, On Prem or in the cloud. Containerized or uncontainerized, and they can build on top of that at their own pace. So that's the choice and they can mitigate risk by giving those tools to manage that consistently. The other thing I would say for something that we are not talking a lot about because we are focusing about technology and requirements and constraints is what we hear about our customers that Anthos is good for the engineering teams, and what we hear our customers say, that because they are choosing this technology, their talent is appreciating that they can use the best and latest technology and their skills are portable to other areas as well and they can attract the best talent. That to me is a very big value for us that are looking to do digital transformation. >> I'll take a crack at it as well, so Anthos is Google's opinionated solution for hybrid and multi cloud and it is like Chen said, something that mitigates risk and gives users choice so that they're not locked in to a particular cloud and instead, they can build once and deploy anywhere. From a technical standpoint, it's three things. There's a multi cluster, multi cloud, management plane, that's hosted in Google Cloud. Number two, there's a service management layer which actually bridges your monolithic, migrated services with your green field services that are containerized and treats them all as services that you can secure, manage, and control, and then number three, we have an awesome marketplace from which you can deploy Google Services, you can also deploy partner services, and you can deploy them into anywhere that Anthos is registered and can run. >> So Anthos embraces the cloud, all clouds, all services. >> Anthos embraces the user and it puts the user first. >> Does this benefits, good choice, lock in options, negotiating contracts, developers love it, ... (upbeat music) >> Hey welcome back, Jeff Rick here with theCUBE. We're in San Francisco International, actually at gate 54B if you're trying to to track us down. It's the Alaska Airlines improved flight experience launch event. A lot of vendors here, they're rebranding their planes, they've rebranded all the Virgin Airbus planes, and they've taken that opportunity to add a lot of new innovations. So we're excited to be here, to talk to some of the people participating, and our first guest. It's Rene Donkworth, he is the general manager of Aircraft Seating America's for Recaro. Rene, great to see you. >> Thank you, great to be here. >> So I've seen a lot of people are familiar with the Recaro seats, we think of them as racing seats or, you know, upgrading our cars when we were kids, everybody wanted a Recaro seat. I had no idea you guys played such a major role in aviation. >> Absolutely. And we are since the early 70s already in the aircraft seating business, and really a major player, a global player in this business and you know it's a very long term experience and people are often flying and they're sitting on an aircraft and to be comfortable in traveling is very important and it's our mission. >> Right, it's funny because people probably usually don't think of the seat specifically until they're uncomfortable or, you know, they're in it. But you've got a lot of technology and a lot of innovation in the past but also some of these new seats that you're showing here today. >> Right. So we are showing the seat for first class here that we have displayed for Alaska Airlines, and we developed together in a very intensive process, a lot of thing on the seat here. We have a memory foam cushion with netting, a six way head rest which overall comes to a very comfortable seating experience for the passenger, and that's really one step ahead of other products, and we went through a very intensive process with Alaska and we are proud to present it and to see the roll out now because it's exciting. If you've worked all the time on such a project to see it's flying now. >> So there's a couple components to this seat, right? There's obviously the safety, its' got to stay bolted on, but you've got kind of this limited ergonomic space in terms of what the pitch is from one seat to the other. What are some of the unique challenges there and what are some of the things you guys have done to operate, you know, in kind of a restrained space? >> Of course it's always to optimize everything with the given conditions that you have. But really looking into the small details. Reduced pressure points on the body, we are using kind of pressure mapping methods to develop that together with the customer, looking into a cushy experience for the passenger, optimizing it so that you have really kinds of luxury feeling on the seat. But in addition it's also important to look into solutions like content. How is content provided and what kind of tablet integration is there, so we have very smart solutions there that we are showing today with the right viewing angles there's the right power, the high power USB which support the power, so the overall package needs to be optimized, and that's what we are working with. >> And that's where I was going to go next, is when you're sitting there for 2 hours, 5 hours, 10 hours now we're talking about 20 hour flights, right, some of these crazy ones, people are doing things in their seat. They're not just sitting, as you said. They want power, they want connectivity, they want to watch their movie on their laptop or their tablet or their phone. So you guys have really incorporated kind of that next gen entertainment experience into this new seat. >> Right. So as I explained, there is a lot about tablet integration, not only for the first class as well also for the economy class that you can see today that you can experience. But there's also a lot about stowage in total. You know, stowage is always a big topic. Where do you stow your belongings? And there you will also see here smart solutions, lots of stowage options. For example also on the coach class seat you can use the tablet, you have the right viewing angle. In addition you can fold or unfold the table, you can use the stowages, so everything is really optimized in the details. >> And this is a huge kind of change in thought process when you think of the entertainment world, right, where it used to be you have a projector TV and then they put individual seat screens, but the airlines woke up and figured out everyone's already packing their screen of choice so how do we support that experience versus putting our own screen on that seat. >> Yeah, that's where we are going, and if you look into today's passengers almost everybody has his own tablet or iPhone or whatever with him, so it's important to be able to stow everything, to connect every kind of device, to have the power. But I think then the content is really important to be provided. (upbeat music) >> Hey welcome back, and we're here live with CUBE coverage here in Seattle for KubeCon + CloudNativeCon. I'm John Furrier, Stu Miniman is here, and Jason McGee. Who's an IBM fellow, CTO of IBM's Cloud platform, Kube alumni. Great to see you. Welcome back. >> Great to be here. >> I want to jump right in. You got a talk coming up, you got a show here that's doubling in size. The community is clearly resonates around Kubernetes. >> Yeah absolutely. >> Which is goodness for the industry. We covered that last year, how people started to snap in in getting it. Bringing it together, seeing visibility into value points where people can co-exist and create value. But we're now going to the next level. Cloud's certainly been validated, the hybrid cloud, on premises and public cloud. Working? >> Yeah >> Customers are seeing it, uptake is there. Where's the big thread now that's being worked on? Because, as going to the next level, it's an app market. We've also got some systems in there. Where do you see this coming together? I know you're giving a talk on this. >> Yeah I think, at the end of the day, people are trying to run applications. That's what this game has always been about. They have applications they're trying to build and run. They run their business. And I think, as a community, this group of people here has been working together to build that platform. And I think it's been actually incredible to watch the last couple of years. Everyone rallying round Kubernetes and Containers. That agreement amongst everyone happened so much faster than I thought it would. I was pretty confident two or three years ago that Kube was the right path forward, but that everyone came there has been pretty amazing. And I think what's happening now is, well what about stateless Twelve-Factor apps? What about functions? What about the rest of the stack? And how do we all come together as a community to find that going forward? >> Talk about the role of functions and as compute storage and networking that we call the holy trinity of IT. Those things have changed with Cloud, but specifically compute. I mean, I used to say, "Spin up a server in 10 seconds." Well I need now, milliseconds. So you see functions in, you know Amazon with Lambda, these things are changing the game. Now with containers and functions, a dynamic is evolving pretty interestingly. How do you see that evolving, and the impact of that piece? Because compute certainly is goodness to a lot of things. >> Sure, I think functions is interesting 'cause there's kind of two angles on it. There's functions as a business model, and functions as an architecture. And I think the architecture part, the programmable part is quite interesting. There are certain styles of applications, mostly Ven-oriented applications, where that is a really natural way to solve a problem. And I think what platforms are all about is having the platform be rich enough that for diversity workloads that you're running it's easy to consume the platform. And so, us all agreeing on functions as a programming model and getting that in the platform, and integrated with Kubernetes, and integrated with Istio, I think will enable people to build apps much more quickly. >> You see that's a good size right now? Good signals? >> Yeah. The Knative project is a great example of something new. >> Yeah Jason, I wonder if we can pull on that thread a little bit there? Because the holy grail has always been, I just want to worry about my application and all that storage and networking stuff should just work. When we went to virtualization it helped to a level, but that was just an abstraction. What's the same and what's different about when we go to something like functions, compared to what we've been doing in the past? >> Well, I think there's a couple things. First, I think IT is under this kind of, we're trying to flip the model. For my whole 20+ year career, IT has been mostly about infrastructure, and we started at infrastructure and we built our way up to apps. And what I think we've been trying to do with Kubernetes and with Knative is flip it, and start at apps and move our way down. Now Kube was a good step in that journey but it's still pretty raw, you know? You still have storage abstractions, you still have networking abstractions. What you want is for certain workloads to not worry about any of that, and functions and also Twelve-Factor systems, like Cloud Foundry, both play a role and if you fit within a paradigm we can get rid of all of that for you. And that's what developers want. And it doesn't work for everything. Not every application follows the rules. And I think Cloud Foundry has a particular opinionated view of twelve-factor stateless apps, functions has a particular opinionated view of event-orientated apps. We need those abstractions, and we need them to be done consistently with the rest of the platform, so you can kind of mix and match as you see fit. >> Istio has gotten hot too, so service batches are coming in. I know there's been some debate around how much does Kubernetes become or staying core. Last year we had big conversations around the core and let things fill in around it. Your thoughts on this trend and how people are thinking about it and what's being actually implemented? >> So my view is, I think the community has done a good job in letting different projects fill in their role, but us all agreeing on the stack. I mean container being Kubernetes, and Istio, and Knative, Prometheus. All these things are kind of slotting into their place, and I think in general we've done a good job of avoiding one mega system design. And I think CNCF has done a good job of letting a few competitors play with each other in the community, and make each other better. >> Jason, you bring up such a great point there, because one of the things when we reach this size and there are so many people here, there's the obvious comparison to, is this OpenStack? And you've just brought up one of the biggest things that I've seen is, before it was like, okay well how many different pieces are in the core and I've got the big tent and all these things, but it all needed to live together, as opposed to here, I've got all of these components and, in many ways we're trying to decompose Kubernetes and we've got all these various pieces, and they're not all dependent on each other and we don't all have to agree. There can be, from observability, for management, there's so many different ways that I can take the pieces and put them together. So, I would love your viewpoint as to what we're getting right now? And how do we not duplicate some of the sins of the past? >> Yeah, I mean, first off it's always something that a community as vibrant as this has to keep their eye on. It's like, is it all getting out of control? So far I think we've all done a good job because we've been very application oriented, and we've also been very focused on real usage. Most of the technologies we're talking about here, people are really using in production, ad-scale... There's somebody who has real earning behind that. And I think it's driven good decision-making. I think one of the, maybe, unsung things about Kubernetes is the extensibility model, that's built into Kubernetes. The loose coupling that's built into this community has been incredibly powerful. Because it's allowed new things, like Istio is a great example. We, with Google and Lyft and others, built Istio. We built it in this completely native experience inside of Kubernetes without changing anything about Kubernetes. We were able to insert it into the system in a very natural way. And I think that allows us to experiment and figure out where we need to go without it becoming this big mess. >> Scale's great, and that's a key value of the Cloud. Security is number one. What's your view on security? How's that going? What are end users experiencing? How serious is a security issue? Recently Kubernetes seemed to work, from the recovery standpoint, to automate it pretty quickly. But security is a concern. It's top of mine. You've got the security containment boundary there, the boundary within containers, you've got role of DMs. How do a new dimension... How do you view the security piece of Kubernetes? So I think it's letting us solve those problems in completely different ways. The holy grail for a long time has been get to standardized systems. And I think with Containers, we're as close as we've ever been. And I wouldn't say we're there, but we're awfully close to having a model where we've got clean separation between the application layer and the system. We can plug in security. We can do image enforcement. We can do scanning. We can do firewalling and network stuff in very different ways. Even Istio. Istio, at the end of the day, a lot of what people are interested in with Istio is the security idea. Like, I can do a cryptic communications between microservices, and that's all kind of done for me in the infrastructure underneath. So I think security is important. I think we're making it easier for developers to be successful building secure systems with platforms like we're talking about here. Because we're able to solve them in new ways. >> We've got IBM Think coming up. theCUBE will be there February, I think 15th? >> 12th to the 15th >> 12th to the 15th, in San Fransisco. What are you guys going to be talking about at IBM Think for folks that are going, or people might want to sign up. Plug for theCUBE and IBM Think there for a quick second. What's going to be there? What's the focus with an IBM... You guys got a lot of customers. What's their resonance to Kubernetes? How are they thinking about it? How are they consuming it? Will you share a little bit about what's coming up for them? >> Yeah, at IBM we're focused on helping customers make that journey to Cloud, and we're very pragmatic. We understand the complexity of the environments they have. They're building awesome new Cloud Native stuff, they have a bunch of existing middleware workloads. So we're going to be talking a lot about how we help you get there and how you handle the diversity of workloads. We're going to talk a lot about technology, about Kubernetes. We're going to do some fun stuff. We're going to do an awesome... We have a session that's all drones, flying drones demo of how Kubernetes works. Like all live, maybe somebody'll get hurt; I'm not sure. But we're going to do some awesome tech demos. >> We've heard a little bit of discussion about IoT here but not a lot about AI when it comes here. And I wondered if you might be able to help connect the dots for us? >> Yeah, so I'd say two things. AI is its whole own domain. I think the intersection with AI and a conference like this is Kubernetes is the platform for AI too. At IBM we run all of Watson on Kubernetes. We run all of our machine-learning and deep-learning systems by Kubernetes. So it is becoming the platform for AI developers as well, to be able to be successful, taking advantage of all the compute resource, custom hardware and stuff that's available in Cloud. So I think there's a strong intersection, of this being the platform for those workloads. >> So on the Cloud Native stuff, we know we've been covering you guys for a long time. You had SoftLayer in acquisition, but even before SoftLayer you had Bluemix. Bluemix was developing a lot of Cloud Native technologies. How is the result of the years of investment around Bluemix changing or evolving with the rise of Kubernetes and the rise of these new sets of microservices? Because you got operations impact, you got developer impact, you've the the simplicity model you were just talking about. How is IBM bringing that to bear? Can you share some inside commentary on what's happening? >> Over the last 2+ years, we've been building up the platform I've been describing to you in our cloud. We made a decision that Kubernetes was the foundation, both for the existing apps to modernize and for new things. And then we've been taking our serverless platform, our Cloud Foundry investment, our DevOps tools, and bringing them all together. My goal is to build that new platform. As an old web seer guy from 20 years ago, I saw the value in the industry rallying round a common platform for apps. I think we can do that again. I think we've made so much progress. And at IBM we're trying to drive that thought, both in our products and in these community interactions. >> Talk about that dynamic you mentioned... We were talking about before we came on camera here, about how I was saying it's a systems world now. People who have a different mindset seem to resonate well with Cloud. You mentioned the app server days, those blurry days. There's a renaissance of those two dimensions going on. Just share you thoughts on that. I thought you had an interesting insight. >> I think it's interesting. Cloud is absolutely a systems kind of problem. It's how do you bring hardware and networking, abstractions around compute, all these pieces together, and do it in a way that's composable. I think that's the really interesting part of Cloud, is you have a hundred things that all on their own have to have solid capability, and then you have to be able to mix and match them. And you can't do that unless you take a systems view. That security is the same, the user experience is the same, APIs are the same. And it's been actually really challenging to do that in the context of OpenSource, because every OpenSource project has its own viewpoints on how you do authentication, and authorisation, users, and getting all this stuff to work together is hard. And so I do think we have a little bit of a resurgence of people who understand how to build complete end-to-end systems. >> And then once you enable that you have some horizontally scalable capabilities, you got data and virtual specialization. >> You can specialize and you can have some common base. >> So now at the top, above that, is the app server kind of vibe that you went through. That's kind of happening now. You see that. >> Absolutely. >> And we see it for our clients and ourselves. All of IBM Cloud we've moved to run on the same platform. We run all of our services on Kubernetes. And so we've kind of used the platform ourselves to prove how it can handle this diverse set of workloads. >> This is really disruptive. I think that's a great angle. Jason, thanks for sharing that on theCUBE. We really want to get that out. Cloud is disrupting IT, open source communities, and the developer market, both horizontal scale and new kinds of application environments. It's certainly exciting. Happy to welcome to the program Michael Garski, who's the director of platform engineering at Fender. Thanks so much for joining me. >> Thanks, Stu. Thanks for having me on. >> All right, so, luckily, I don't need to introduce Fender because I think most of our audience will be familiar with, you know, Fender, guitars, music, all that stuff, but we're going to talk a little bit about the tech side. >> Okay. >> Even though, let me ask, there's a question I usually ask. Most companies, you know, going through the digital transformation, lots of changes there. How does digital impact Fender? >> Digitally, Fender started a digital division in late 2015 and it was a focus on all-new digital products to complement our well-known physical products. Since then we've launched Fender Mod Shop, where a user can order a customized guitar online, have it delivered in a month. We have a single sign-on solution across all of our web and mobile applications, a guitar tuner, we have connected amplifiers, with companion apps to control amplifiers remotely. And our flagship product is Fender Play, which is an instructional app which allows the user to learn to play guitar, ukulele, and coming soon, bass. >> Love it. I'm guessing that has something to do with what you're involved with on the cloud and Serverless side to enable those technologies on the mobile side. >> Exactly. We've fully embraced AWS Lambda to support all of the services for the web and mobile applications. >> Okay, so A Cloud Guru's a training company and we've talked to them extensively as to why Serverless was a good fit for them, and enabled them to do it, but bring us through what led to your adoption of AWS Lambda, give us a little bit about what kind of technologies you were using before, and how you got to this solution. >> Well, we started out building services and go, just standard EC2 based microservices, and then we started tinkering a bit with Lambda. We had to adjust the product catalog from SAP. They could deliver a file, drop it into an S3 bucket, so it was simple enough to create a function that can process that file and ingest it into elastic search. From there, we used custom authorizers with API Gateway mapping templates to save custom tunings for users, and then as we started building for Tone and Play, Tone especially is a very limited audience. It's whoever buys the amplifiers. So we're not talking millions of people, it's going to be hundreds of thousands. So, it was a very good use case to go ahead and do that. Same thing with Play, we're starting a new business that's a great model for us, that we can just pay per usage. >> All right, so, yeah it sounds like you were using cloud and the usage model fit for what Serverless was built for, correct? >> Exactly, yes. >> All right, how much is management aware of, you know, kind of the underlying technology? Is your group, kind of just allowed free reign to kind of deal with this? Or are there anything you need to go to the CFO, and be like, well, you know our billings going to change a little bit compared to what you might have known in the past? >> It's, we pretty much have free reign. And our biggest AWS expense is actually what we pay for, in AWS Glacier for storage for the raw footage, of all the 4K footage from, instructional video shoots, and Lambda on top of that is simply a rounding error. >> Yeah, excellent. And the mobile apps that you've built, are there trials on there? Is everybody up to sign-up to be able to use it? Is it a freemium model or is it a paid model? >> The Tuner is a completely free application. There is an in-app purchase for cord and scale libraries, and some pro features of the tuner. Custom tunings are free. The Play application comes with a 30-day free trial, so user can sign up either on the web, or via the Google or Apple app stores on their mobile device. >> Okay, so, with that kind of model, I would think that Lambda would be nice. There's, you know, you said your expenses aren't that high using this kind of service. >> No, not at all, like I, in the month of June, we spent, I think it was like $132 for 68 million Lambda invocations. And to kind of put that in perspective a bit, it's what we pay for some EC2 services, EC2 instances that support our legacy authentication service, but we're also moving that over to Cognito now so we can get rid of all the EC2 instances. >> Okay, when you started using this technology, how'd you first learn about it? How'd you get up to speed on it? Tell us a little bit about kind of, training adoption. >> It was a lot of experimentation. So, we have it set up where we use one account for our QA and production environments and another account for our development environment. All the engineers on the team have free-reign to do whatever they want to in the development environment. They can spin up whatever they need to. So we just started playing around with things and experimenting. Like, let's hook up Lambda function to API Gateway, oh, this is going to work really well! And just kind of proceeded down that path. >> All right, great, and any learnings, anything that you tried playing with and said, like wow, this just isn't going to be a fit for what I need? Tell us, you know, what worked, what didn't? >> I would say about the only thing we found that really doesn't fit within Lambda and Serverless would be really very low latency applications. You're doing an auto complete for a search system. You want that snappy. It's, humans observe, I think it's about 100 milliseconds things seemed instantaneous, and that's going to be very challenging to get from API Gateway Lambda to get that consistently. >> Okay, great. And you're speaking here at the conference, how'd that end up happening, what are you looking to share with your peers? >> How it happened was I submitted a talk for a conference and then Drew from A Cloud Guru approached me and asked me to submit I had to tell him I already did, so they went ahead and approved it. And, I'm sharing what we've done and built at Fender Digital, and sort of what we found as far as tools for monitoring, performance optimization, as well as some things to really be cautious of when you're dealing with Lambda, especially with regards to concurrency controls. >> 'Kay, great and, how have you found the show so far? You were at the keynote, got about 500 people here. >> Yeah, it's really interesting. I'd really like the focus all on Serverless. You see, go to a lot of conferences, there might be one or two talks that kind of focus on that. It's nice to have something completely focused in that space. >> All right, and, you know, from a maturity standpoint, are there things that you're looking for in the roadmap from Amazon? They've been baking Serverless kind of into all of their services, so do you expect to stay on Lambda, or are there other services that kind of, you know FAZ or Serverless built into it that you might be using? >> We expect to stay on Lambda for the near term. I don't, we don't have any plans or looking at anything else like Azure or Google Cloud functions, our intention is to stay with AWS. They have a lot of other services, their new machine learning services, we use DynamoDB quite extensively, and so we're probably going to stick with them. >> Yeah, but inside Amazon, they've been expanding their Serverless portfolio as it was. >> Oh, yeah. >> And I remember, I was at the show when Lambda was announced, and then, you know it's Aurora with Serverless underneath and all those, so do you expect to adopt some of those other services that have AWS Serverless kind of baked into it as opposed to just using, kind of a Lambda tool. >> Absolutely, especially with, you just mentioned the Aurora Serverless model. That's one that we're taking a look at and evaluating as we've got some data in DynamoDB, but as requirements have shifted in the business over time it's really, it's becoming very difficult to model in DynamoDB, so we're going to kind of take a look at that, and possibly move to Aurora Serverless. >> I'm curious, how does Fender, does Fender think of the data involved? Is that something that, you mentioned AI, some of these, is that something that you'll be able to take the data and leverage that potentially even make new business revenue streams out of that in the future? >> We're doing some of that already by just watching user, analyzing user behavior so we can improve our products internally. And we're looking at adding more features to where we can really understand what people are doing, and then make our products better. >> All right. Michael, want to give you the final word. For your peers out there that might be saying hey, I've heard of Serverless, I'm kind of thinking at it, what advice would you give them? >> Just dive in, get started, don't hesitate. It's, it doesn't cost you anything, really to experiment with it. That model works very, very nice. >> Yeah, and it's one of the things that's great. It used to be you would take a lot of period of time and some big investment to be able to try a technology out or maybe you would get some demo, but Serverless is pretty easy to get started on. >> Exactly. Especially if you're using a framework like say, Serverless framework, or maybe using AWS. Excuse me, AWS's Serverless application model, it really helps as far as setting up all the resources that your function needs as well. >> All right well, Michael really appreciate you riffing with us on your deployments with Serverless and hope your peers will definitely check it out. This is theCUBE's exclusive coverage, and John Furrier, Here in San Fransisco for VMware's Radio 2018 14th year where all the top engineers and R&D folks get together and show their best stuff, ideas, discussions, and have a great time. Our next guest is Nicola Acutt who's the vice president of stability strategy office of the CTO VMware part of the group that puts this event together, really a celebration, but also competitive. Welcome to theCUBE, thanks for showing up. >> Thanks, it's great to be here, thank you. >> So, talk about what your role is, because sustainability, we were just talking off camera about blockchain and the energy. Is sustainability an energy thing, is it a society thing, what is your focus? >> John we think about sustainability at VMware in a holistic way, and it's some total of how we run our business, so from an operations perspective, how we do that in a responsible and an environmentally responsible way, but it also includes our people and culture. Sustainability is a lot about culture change, and then most importantly, it's also about what we do, and the impact of our product. And so at VMware, we focus on sustainability and what's unique about our approach is that it's in the business, that we have placed the sustainability function in the office of the CTO, because we believe that the biggest impact that we can have is actually through our technology. >> You guys do a great job, I have to say. And the building, by the way, in Palo Alto, your headquarters, which is voted one of the most best places to work, is very sustainable. I know they got a couple of pens from the trees, and you guys use all the wood, all the stories involving the building. So the culture's there, so I gotta ask you here at Radio, what are some of the sustainability ideas, what are some of the conversations, what are some of the papers, what are some of the core tech off-road map that's exciting you and the team at VMWare on sustainability? >> Right, it's really exciting, and Radio is such a magical event for all those reasons. And the sustainability piece of this is really exciting, and there's a couple of dimensions that we have. We have an expo up in the science fair part of the event where some of our engineers who participated in our recent Borathon, which is like a Hackathon, and the theme was sustainability, and so they're presenting their hacks, some of their crazy cool ideas. On one end there was a project around using block chain technology for microgrids, there was a broken build predictor, there was a project around monitoring real time energy for our service. So fascinating, sort of skunkwork projects in the office of the CTO, and then we also are going to be doing a paper cosponsored with two of our principle engineers looking at, and asking a really big question. And that is around code sustainability, and how we think about sustainability and energy as a metric of success just like we consider performance, quality, and security. So I'm excited about that, because that ultimately is about culture, and it's about thinking about hard problems. And that's what innovation is about, right? It's creativity solving hard problems, and implementing something as a result. >> And the big debate about, oh servers aren't gonna be made 'cause the clouds eating server market, well someone's gotta buy servers, someone's gotta run data, so that's always been the challenge of how do I get more power? And now intermitting things, the IOT devices, are needing power. So you've got solar, not a lot of challenges at the network layer but also our layer. Because it's not connected to the network, it has to transmit, it needs power. How do you guys see that evolving on the R&D front? >> You know, I think that's one of the big horizon issues for our industry, frankly. VMWare celebrating our 20th year anniversary, and recently we had an event where some of our alumni and founders and they were asked the question, "what are the things that "keep you up at night about our industry?" And there were two answers to that, one is security and the other is energy. So we really have to fundamentally think about this question, and that is something that we are taking to heart at VMWare and considering what does that future look like? For some companies sustainability is about innovating around things like, can we make products from plastic pollution in the ocean? And for us, we're asking the question what does the future of energy look like for our customers and for our industry? And that future is going to be a distributed energy future. So what does that mean for computing? I don't have the answers right now, but that's part of, and events like this where we bring our smart people together to start to ask those questions, and that's where innovation begins. >> And you don't know where the spark is gonna come from, that's what's great about these tech events, is that there's no bad ideas, 'cause you can kick it around. There's enough people around you, and then now you go back to the company, digitally connected. So you have the Hackathons and the tech talks, you have cool vibe environment, the question I wanna ask you with that is that, is that distributed energy challenge the number one item on the agenda? What are some of the key things that are shaping the agenda for you guys with sustainability? 'Cause I think that's what folks might wanna know about, "okay, what should I think about, is it energy, "what are some of the things I should "start thinking about in the shower, "thinking about as I'm at work or at play?" >> Right, great question. And you know, sustainability is a complex issue that challenges us as a society. For us at VMware, like I said, we're taking a holistic perspective on sustainability, so that includes environmental, social and governance matters. But to answer your question from a technology perspective, we are focused on energy, that's not the only thing, but it is a priority. So we're looking at that from several dimensions. One is our own processes, so that's where the sustainability code initiative code comes in, so how we make our code and our product. And then the products and features that get built into our products and services to our customers, and then layered on top of that is then the energy mix, and doing our part as a progressive company to drive through renewable energy's markets. So we've made a commitment to 100% renewable energy, to carbon neutrality, to do our fair share, but also to help shift the market. Because the future is about not only the applications and the problems that technology can help solve, but it's also about the nature of energy, and the grid mix, so that's a combination. >> And the empowerment to society is also a big one. Huge focus this year, not this year, but this decade on mission driven initiatives. Sustainability clearly falls in that. We were talking about before we came on camera about block chain, and one of the things I've observed in my reporting is that a lot of energy ideas in block chain. You mentioned one of them, where token economics could be an issue. I know block chain has it's own challenges with energy, but that's a hard problem that could be solved that needs to be solved. So folks watching, solve the energy problem, and the speed problem too on block chain. But these are the new ideas that are growing in India, in Africa, these new areas of the world where the middle class is exploding in growths. More access people to computing, more mobile devices. So you start to see new geographies around the world challenge. >> Absolutely, and I fundamentally share the optimism around technology. I think as technologists, we need to be thoughtful about the impact of technology, and I think that is another topic of the day we could have a separate conversation on that, but when you look at the challenges of the world, and the United Nations has put out the sustainable development framework that really names those big gnarly problems of the world that we need to solve, and at the heart of all of those, I believe, technology plays a role. To me, I think that's where companies like Vmware can have a bigger impact, is to think about where is that sweet spot around which we can help bridge those divides, and enable a better future more globally. >> I know you gotta go, real quick, describe what's going on here at Radio, San Francisco to the folks that are watching could make it, what's the vibe, what's it like, share some color commentary. >> You can just feel the energy. It's like a big science fair, but at the end of the day-- >> [John] It's social, too. >> It's very social, and this event is about technology, but it's actually about community. So we talk a lot about all the cool things and things in our future, off-road maps, but at the end of the day, software is all about people, and you see that here, you feel it, it is a community event, and it is about people connecting, and that's the best part about it. >> It's the social collaborative construct. We're at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California, for the 14th Annual Association of Corporate Growth Silicon Valley GROW! Awards. We've been here for a couple of years now, and it's a big event, 300 people coming in to talk about an ecosystem of helping other companies grow. And we're excited to have the new CEO, Drue Freeman. Drew, great to meet you. >> Thanks Jeff, pleasure to be here. >> So you've been here two months, I think. What attracted you to the opportunity? >> It's kind of an exciting organization, actually. I've been working with ACG Silicon Valley for a little while now doing some programming with them around autonomous driving and the connected car. And I got to know my predecessor, Sally Pera, through that and through the course of discussions-- She's a wonderful salesperson, she kind of sucked me into the role and here I am. >> Jeff Frick: What is the mission, for people that aren't familiar with ACG? >> Essentially what we are is an organization that's dedicated towards providing networking opportunities, education opportunities, programming for C-Level executives, and other senior-level executives at companies to help them develop their career and also grow their businesses. >> Like you said, Sally's been at it for 13 years, she's stepping out of the role, which opened up the opportunity for you. What's your charter now, as you take the baton from Sally? Fresh enthusiasm, fresh energy, fresh face. What are you excited about? >> Of course, it sounds silly, but to take things to the next level, whatever that means, to try to identify a vision for the organization, going forward. Maybe find some new areas to develop content around. Attract some sponsors in the technology domain, and bring content that will maybe continue the Thought Leadership area. We are recognized as a Thought Leadership within the community here in Silicon Valley, and also within the greater ACG community. But we want to really kind of notch that up a little bit. We're bringing in some university sponsorship now and really looking at some of the leading edge areas that Silicon Valley is on the tip of the spear of, essentially, globally, for innovation. We want to make sure that we're putting that content out really to our community. >> Right. And this is the GROW! Awards, this is an awards banquet, a celebration tonight, but you guys do a number of different types of events throughout the year. What are some of the formats of the different ways that people can get involved? >> The one that most people are aware of is our keynote panels because those are open to a larger audience. Typically we get about 100 people there at these events. We bring in a panel of experts and we have a discussion on some topic that's quite current at the moment. But we also have a Public Board Circle, where people who are on public boards of publicly traded companies will have a discussion within that smaller group of people about relevant topics. We have a C-Suite Circle, where C-Level executives come together. We bring in outside experts that will come in and talk about things like economic trends or whatever the current issues are, and then they have a robust discussion around that topic. We have an MNA Circle. We also have an accelerator environment, where we have younger companies, sometimes start-ups, sometimes mid-market companies, where we bring in some experts that kind of help them pop the hood and look at what some of the strategic issues are that they might be facing, et cetera. >> Okay, so that's all great, but let's talk about the stuff I know you're passionate about and is so fun right now, that's autonomous vehicles. It's a really crazy time in the industry. You've got changes in the players. You've got changes in the propulsion. You've got changes in the ownership structure. You've got so many changes happening in the autonomous vehicle space and all the ecosystem around it. I'd just love to get your impressions. You've been playing in that space for a long time, in the automotive space, but to see the changes really accelerate driven in a large part, obviously, by Tesla and Elon Musk. And we're here at the Computer History Museum. They've got that great little display over there with the Google cars. Which they now weigh more and they have to keep changing them out because it went from the little bug-looking thing, now they're driving the vans. I'd love to get your impressions as to the speed, some surprises, not surprises, as we see this autonomous vehicle trend coming down the pipe. >> Technology is evolving at a remarkable speed. That's being driven largely by the availability of increased processing power. You need to address the data bandwidth power, as well. You've got to move a lot of different data around the car to address this technology. And that's really pushing the envelope of what cars can do. The industry itself still needs to make sure they can bring that to the market in a way that the market will accept. That people in Main Street, USA, or Main Street, Europe, or Main Street, Asia are going to be comfortable driving in. Car ownership is going to change a little bit, especially in urban areas. People may not choose to buy a car in the urban areas. They might choose to do carsharing. But in the Midwest, I think car ownership is still going to be a key element, and it's not clear yet how ready people are to have a self-driving car as part of their own ownership. The technology, while we can demonstrate it works, still needs to be demonstrated that it works in a way that makes people feel comfortable. And so, I think there's still a lot of innovation to be done in the software, in the AI, the machine learning, that makes people feel comfortable with that. And there's a lot of great companies working on that. I'm amazed every day at the companies developing not only the sensors and things that enable the perception of the vehicle to improve, but also the AI around that. But honestly, I think the roll-out in-- Making it available to you and I on the street it's going to be a lot slower than I think a lot of us have been thinking about for a while. >> Yeah. The trust issue is so interesting to me. 'Cause on one hand, people do have to have some trust and we've talked to Phantom Auto and some other companies that are trying to kind of insert a person back in at some point in time to help with that trust. On the other hand, you have people driving the Teslas especially, or at least that's the ones we hear the most about, that's a level two assist that people are treating like a level five fully autonomous vehicle. And unfortunately, there's been some fatalities and they're not level five vehicles. So it's really two opposite extremes, that we see people and their interaction with these things. They want it to be fully autonomous today, and it's not but people are treating them that way. It's weird. >> Yeah, and I think that's one of the risks, right? I think level three is one area where I really think you probably will not see a lot of. I think level four, where you can basically have fully autonomous but in a geo-fenced area, will I think be the first area that really takes off. So on campuses, in maybe urban areas that are fenced off from other vehicles. I think you will see that develop first. I don't think mixed-mode traffic where you have a lot of vehicles where they're fully autonomous but you're going to expect the driver to be paying attention all the time and willing to take over the vehicle at any minute. I don't think that works. The human brain doesn't work that way. >> No, it doesn't work. It's funny, we were at a Ford event, and it was a press event so they had the sample driver guy ready to go, and they had a guy sitting in the right seat with a laptop, checking things out. And this poor guy in the left seat, he had his hands half an inch from the wheel on both side, just completely alert and ready to go. You couldn't do this for more than fifteen minutes or twenty minutes. It was the worst of all worlds for this poor guy. It is going to be interesting, that intermediate phase, and it's going to be complicated, but it's clearly coming at an incredible rate of speed. >> Right. Exactly. And then you also have to manage-- How do you manage the traffic when you have mixed mode, when you have human-driven vehicles combined with autonomous vehicles? How do the autonomous vehicles react to the human-driven vehicles and how do the humans react to autonomous-driven vehicles? And we haven't really figured that out yet. >> Right, and then there's all the other law of unintended consequences with, what do you do with the parking structures? I think curb management is an interesting thing that's really been highlighted lately in San Francisco with all the electric scooters that are now littering the sidewalks, which nobody ever really thought about when they rolled out hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of these scooters all over San Fransisco. Good opportunities and crazy times ahead. >> And that's the beauty of this, right? All of these things actually create opportunities, you just have to stick with it and look at solutions, and there's no shortage of really talented, creative people to go address these opportunities. (uplifting music) >> Hi, I'm Stu Miniman and this is a CUBEConversation at SiliconANGLE's, Palo Alto studio, happy to welcome to the program, a first time guest and and new to Nutanix, the Chief Marketing Officer, Ben Gibson. Ben, thank you so much for joining us. >> Stu thanks for having me here. I love the studio and love the chance to chat with you. >> Alright, so our audience know Nutanix really well, so let's introduce them to you first of all. Give our audience a little bit about your background and, you know, we know Nutanix IPO'd not that long ago. Exciting. Growing real fast so, you know, I'm sure it makes sense but why for Ben? >> Yeah. For me, firs and foremost, it's such an exciting company. We're going through a lot of fairly strong growth right now. We've really created a category in the Space Realm Hyperconvergence and now we're really expanding from that position and to be in the middle of that, I think is really exciting. >> So your background is mostly in the networking space and it's one of those things, I'm a networking guy by background. >> Yeah. >> Networking is changing a lot, lately, but not nearly as fast as some of the other parts so, you know, tell us a little bit about your background, where you've been, what your skillset is going to bring to Nutanix, in that ecosystem. >> Yeah, you know, I did, like you, I hailed from the networking industry. I spent a good portion of my career at Sisco, I spent part of my career at Aruba Networks, which is in the Wi-Fi, wireless space, but I think you're right. I think the acceleration of innovation in Nutanix's industry a lot of stuff has changed so quickly in that space, so networking hasn't quite kept up with that level of change of things and for me it's kind of getting on a much faster train and moving forward with it. >> Alright, so we've had theCUBE at every single one of the DotNext conferences >> Ben: Thank you. >> They're fun. Your predecessor Howard Ting had a certain flair so let's talk a little bit about the show and, you know are there things that your going to be putting your stamp on at this show, coming up in New Orleans? >> Yeah, I mean first of all it great to succeed Howard, in the role. I used to be an advisor for the company and so Howard and I used to have periodic pancake breakfasts and I told him what I thought and he shared with me a lot about how exciting things were. What was happening at Nutanix and how they really move forward. And I knew about DotNext, I've seen DotNext I know what an exciting show it is. For a company like Nutanix to draw, this year, over 5000, attendees to this show, that's notable. And, what, to me, that signals is the level of intensity and the level of loyalty that we enjoy in our customer base, they're believers and they're coming to the show to learn from us, to connect with each other and really to accelerate some of their plans on how they continue to innovate. >> Yeah, you know, we travel to so many different shows and absolutely, it is at it's core, it's a user conference, it's users there wanting to learn how to use what they have even better. Learn about the cool net technologies. Dave Valente and I have talked about Nutanix is up there with companies like Service Now, that have, just, people that come and are just, you know, kind of fanatically supported. It reminds me of, you know, Vmware's a great company, doing well today. Many years ago everybody had the I love VMware bumper stickers. Vmware is a great show. We'll be there this year >> Ben: Yeah, so will we. >> And your company will too, so ah, what, what do people what brings them to that show from your standpoint and give us a little insight as to, kind of, some of the special things they'll be seeing this year in New Orleans. >> Yeah, you know, I think one of the biggest attractions of coming to this show is if you think about the role of an infrastructure professional, someone who's looking at hybrid Cloud environments and how do you manage those. Thinking about what applications run on what cloud platform. There's a lot of change and fluidity to that and I think the nature or the role of an IT or an Infrastructure professional is changing. Server Store J-Admin is quickly evolving because that's converging, just like the technology has and so, for me this show is about how do you get ahead of those trends. How do you position yourself to be as strategic as possible, within your own organization? And that's the way I like to think of Dotnext, it's a place that a professional can come to learn and to grow their career and their technology expertise. >> Yeah it's a great point, one of the things I've loved on theCUBE is there are speakers that aren't just from the tech industry, so everyone from Deepak Malhotra, who is from Harvard, um, thought leaders in the space to onstage at one of the shows it was David Blaine doing a magic trick while one of your engineers was configuring stuff. So there's some great speakers that'll be at the event this year to, not only learn the tech but as you said, you're thinking about the persons career and how do they embrace change and how do they help become more valuable to their company. >> Yeah, you know, there's two in particular that are going to be joining this year that I'm very excited about. One is Dr. Brene Brown. If you haven't seen her TED talk on YouTube I highly recommend you go and check it out. It's something different. It's about how do you be vulnerable, with yourself, with your career. How do you take chances? How do you take risk, and that's a lot of what's going on in our in our industry right now. The second one I think is going to be really fun and that's Anthony Bourdain. Known for his show, Parts Unknown and he's going to have colorful language, right, noted, some colorful language but also he's just a riot. He's the one I think is going to bring his special kind of flair to the show and get everyone really excited, laughing and maybe a little bit of gasping, in terms of what he's going to be sharing with us. >> Yeah, absolutely I mean, New Orleans is a great culinary destination and so I know everybody that's going there you'll want to check out the music, the culture and a lot going in there. So, excited about the show. We're going to have theCUBE there for two days. Last thing I want to talk to you about, Ben, just, Nutanix as a company, when I registered for the show there was one of the questions I thought was pretty interesting. They said, "What do you think Nutanix is?" You know, how do you, what's your relationship with Nutanix? And I'm trying to remember, I know one of the options was M: Is Nutanix a hypercovergence infrastructure player? Are they a cloud player? I think storage might even be in there, it's been one of those things as to, who is Nutanix? What are you today and what do you want to be in the next phase of growth? >> You know, it's a great question Stu, "Who is Nutanix?" We are focused on helping our customers build their enterprise cloud. Our taglines could be Your Enterprise Cloud. Enterprise Cloud is not only how you modernize your own data center but it's also, how do you embrace? How do you have a strategy? How do you govern? How do you bring together the right workload, for the right cloud platform at the right time? And that's the direction we're taking with our innovation. This is what more and more of our customers are looking to do. Not every application's going to a public cloud provider. Not every application is staying on premise. We're going to be living in the hybrid world, Enterprise Cloud is about how do you take the ingredients of hyperconvergent infrastructure? Take the ingredients for automation and management, over these different workloads, across these different environments and do so in a way that makes the complexity of infrastructure and multiple cloud management and make that all invisible. So for us that's our mission. It's building that Enterprise Cloud and making all that complexity go away. And that's the vision we're going to be talking about and that's what we think our attendees are really looking to get the guidance and, kind of the vision of how they move their careers forward and flourish in that space >> Ben, it's the barometer that I've been using for probably the last two years. If I spend a lot more time in kind of the Dev/Op Cloud native, you know, worlds these days. We were at an Amazon summit yesterday but, absolutely. It's heterogeneous world. IT has never, you know, let's throw out the old and start the new. Sure there's some new companies that might do that but it's a heterogeneous world, it's a multi-cloud world and big struggle for people is how do they get their arms around it? So if I look at a company that has started mostly on premises, it's like, oh how are you evolving? How are you working with the public Cloud? You know, Nutanix has been working very closely with Google over the last year or so. A new acquisition recently that I know plays into this whole story. Tell us a little bit about the acquisition and, you know, how does Nutanix look at itself, which is now, I mean, if you read the Wall Street reports, Nutanix is a software company. And you're getting great multiples on that and it's helping and you know I've been pretty vocal on this from it's early days, is Nutanix was never a hardware company. It, you know, building an appliance was a go to market choice to simplify and make it easy for customers but as the company matured, >> Yep. >> It made a lot more options and today it makes perfect sense that really software is where it goes, so you talked about a bunch of things there but specifically, kind of the multi-cloud and the acquisition first. >> You know Stu, we're really excited about this recent acquisition we made. It's a company called Minjar and the offering is essentially it's going to be integrated into our broader software platform, that allows customers to be able to assess on a realtime basis. What's the right Cloud platform for a particular workload from a costing perspective? From reliability standpoint. Derish talks about the law of the land. The laws of physics and the like, you need to apply these all to determine what you're going to run where. And what we got with this Minjar acquisition, is a really sophisticated way that our customers can embrace and is part of their enterprise cloud. Because part of this is taking back control over all this disaggregation of workloads running everywhere. You're losing control. Losing governance of your data and your applications if you don't really keep on top of it, this acquisition, I believe, is going to be a really key part of helping IT organizations regain that control. Yet still enjoy all the benefits of hybrid-cloud environments. Whether it be with an AWS an Azure a Google Cloud platform, like we're partnering very closely with, as well as what they're building with their Enterprise Cloud on premise. Whether it be, you know, with Nutanix. >> Yeah, it reminds me of, was it Progressive Insurance, I think has the, you know >> Yeah. >> We're going to give you quote on all of the things there. Cloud is complicated these days. Is there bias towards it, pushing towards, you know, Nutanix closer partners in the technology itself. >> Yeah, I mean it certainly has. There's a lot of complexity around that and to me the industry hasn't solved a lot of new complexity that has come out of the emerging trend of a different line of businesses starting to develop a new application now, on a certain Cloud platform and the like. And as you're seeing this demand for more application mobility between clouds, so all of a sudden the partners that are coming to us and the partners we're seeing and are demanded of that we work with in the market our players are looking at application automation. Players that are looking at dev/ops tools and the like and it both guides how we innovate on our Calm platform, which we introduced last year at DotNext as well it helps us expand our reach. So, we talked to our traditional buyers but there's a lot of new buyers now that are building those apps and managing those environments and we're going to start to see some of those come into the DotNext show. >> Alright. Ben I want to give you the final word. DotNext is one of the many events that I know you do lots of regional shows and the like, what should we expect to see from Nutanix through 2018? >> Yeah, you know the first thing is that the dialogue, the narrative for the company, that we're going out with we've moved to be a software only company and I think our customers tell us and I heard this from one of our largest retail industry customers just a few weeks ago, by moving to a software only model, it's given them freedom to take advantage of Nutanix, regardless of their hardware platforms. And like you said we've never been a hardware company, it's all been about software value and what you're going to see from us is a new narrative. An expansion of the branded Nutanix talking about the freedom we give for customers to build the data center they've always wanted to build. Freedom to run their application or the workload that they've wanted to run, where they choose to run it based on that insight I talked about. And in another realm, the freedom to play. Freedom to get their weekends back. A lot of our value proposition is because of all the complexity we've taken out of the equation, is that we give our customers their weekends back. This is a story that our DotNext attendees, I think, know better than other but we want to spread the word and so part of that is harnessing that freedom concept to build, to run, to play to invent and tell the world. And DotNext, whether is be in New Orleans, which I think is going to be a blast. When we take it to Europe, London and we do this all around the world, to me that's kind of ground zero for that story. For the community of what we've built together with our customers and partners and that what we take out to the world. >> Alright, well Ben Gibson, I'm glad we could introduce you to our community today because we're going to be seeing you at lots of other events, you and your team, of course, theCUBE will be at Nutanix, DotNext in New Orleans. I'm John Furrier co-founder of SiliconANGLE media, co-host of theCUBE. My next guest is artist, director, and producer Rob Prior, at Robprior.com. Great to have you, thanks for spending time. >> It's good to be here. >> Alright. Great to have you. You're super impressive. I was amazed by the work behind me on the wide shot. Can we go to the wide shot? You can see the work you've done. You were just here behind us on the main Disruptor studio with Stan Lee who was Marvel Comics, legend in the industry. >> Legend. >> I mean absolutely legend. And he's here promoting, you know, the edge of the network with Samsung. Games and all that good stuff, part of the developer conference. >> Yeah. >> But you were up there painting with both hands in real time. And did this art. >> Yeah, it was less than an hour, I think this one was. I don't know I don't even keep track anymore. I'm just like... >> So you do both hands. So how did that come about? How did you get to the two hands? >> When I was about, alright, I was going to be an artist no matter what. My entire family line were artists, but none by profession. So, I was kind of not even given a choice. So I got to be about 10 years old and I thought the same thing that every 10 year old thinks, "what if I loose my right hand?". No 10 year old thinks that. So I switched at 10. I switched to, you know I was born a righty, I switched to be a lefty. I switched everything. I switched, you know, baseball, how I threw a balls, playing guitar. I switched everything over. So for two years, no mater how much any one begged me, to like, my grades were going down, cause no one could read my writing, cause I'm like... >> Cryptic. >> Yeah it was weird, and so at that point I made my left hand as good as my right hand. And I was published very young. I was published at 13, internationally at 15. And 13, when I got published, I had math homework due, and I had a painting, a cover due. And I'm like oh my god how am I going to do, I mean. >> Screw the homework, I'm going to do the painting. >> Yeah, so I picked up two brushes and I'm was oh yeah I can do this. Then I actually figured out that I could do my math homework and paint simultaneously. I shut my eyes apparently, when, I don't know when I do it, but when I paint, my eyes are shut a lot of the time. >> Wow, that's awesome. So great skills, so it gets it done faster, but it's also creative. Talk about your work, your artistry, cartoons. You started doing, what did you get into first? And how did your career evolve? Take us through the evolution of your career, because now in the tech scene, you're doing some awesome art, but we live in a digital world. >> Yeah. >> How's that? You're doing cartoons, covers. >> When I first started out, I was doing interiors. Like just pen and ink interiors. And then I started moving into color painted covers, and, you know, sort of gradually went from, you know from black and white work to full color work, to being, doing a lot of different magazine covers, book covers. You name it. I worked heavily with TSR, which is Dungeons and Dragons at the time. >> Yeah. >> And I just sort of moved forward and kept... >> And you got then you got to Hollywood started with movies. What movies did you work on? >> Oh my god, I've worked on a lot of low budget movies. I worked on TV series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Angel. God, so many. I mean, like literally that whole era of TV shows. You know, movie wise I've done stuff with Fast and the Furious. Wow, it's amazing, when you get asked, when you have a giant body of work. When you ask that question all I see are ducks going across. >> Well you just came off stage, so you're really in painting mode now, and you just did this painting. >> Yeah. And how long did it take you do this one? >> I'm sorry? >> This art, how long did it take you to do this one? >> This was a little under an hour. I painted one earlier as well on the main stage during the keynote speech. And that one took me 45 minutes or something like that. >> So they're giving their talk, and you're painting away. >> Yep. >> And you've done this at concerts? >> Yeah >> Tell us what other venues have you done? >> Things like this. I've done it with concerts. People like Tech N9ne, Linkin Park, you know, Steve Aoki, Flo Rida, just to name a few. So I do it while they're performing. So I'll do a full, like, four foot by eight foot painting in about an hour and a half. But when I'm doing gallery work it takes me about a day, maximum two days a painting. >> Yeah. Well you're considerable talent. You mentioned before we came on camera, you're going to do the Linkin Park memorial at the Hollywood Bowl. >> I am, I'm going to be painting there on the 27th, at the Hollywood Bowl. You know, there's going to be a lot of people there, just, you know I think they said the tickets sold out in, like, 39 seconds, or, it was crazy. >> Yeah. >> But I'm fortunate to be able to do that. >> Yeah. >> And pay my respects as well, so. >> Well great work you're doing. I'm really inspired by that because one of the things we're passionate about at SiliconANGLE and theCUBE here is social science, arts, and technology coming together. That's clearly a trend that's happening. I start see the younger generation too coming into this world, and certainly, you have four kids, I have four kids too. We talked about that earlier, but, they're getting immersed in this digital culture and might miss out on some of the analog art. >> Absolutely. >> And what's your thoughts on that, because, this is like, you do both right. >> Yes. >> So you get your hands dirty, I see your hands are dirty. >> Yep they're filthy. >> Good job, you really roll up your sleeves, little pun intended. So, this is the key to success. Share your thoughts and vision for the younger generation and other artists out there, because art will be the front and center piece of technology inspiration, user interface, gaming, augmented reality. >> No, absolutely, you know what, here's the thing. And this is something that you and I were talking about just a little bit ago. I think the, we as humans have a choice. You know, especially kids nowadays they can go and they can be fully immersed, but then they miss all the other things, you know. I've seen kids at tables texting each other instead of talking. But I think if you take the analog era, the thing, like the live painting. Cause I use, I'll take a picture of this I'll pour it into the computer, ill clean it up, and I'll do that. I think mixing the two worlds is vital, you know, in advancing forwards as humans. I mean that's just my opinion, I try to teach my kids that as well. >> Yeah. >> You can't forget about the real world. >> Yeah. >> Because the real world's going to be here no matter what. >> Yeah. >> So, you know- >> And then game developers are out there right now working on a lot of ideas, inspiration, you've drawn monsters before. >> Absolutely >> Some of the characters here from Marvel with Stan Lee. There is, do you need the creative spark? >> Oh absolutely. And look there are, creative spark, anything can be a tool. You know, so, the computer, doing computer art is an amazing opportunity to explore a new kind of tool, right? To invent and create new creatures or new things. It's all on how you use it. And then you get the people, I said this on stage the other day, you get people who are taking photos and then pressing 27 filters and calling it art. I think you have to go backwards and, once again, be able to do the analog. Write your story, create your idea and take any tool that's available and make it happen. Whether it's to picking up a paintbrush, whether it's getting on a computer on a Wacom tablet. >> So you think that's practice from a young artist standpoint is get down and dirty, get analog. >> Absolutely. >> And that's your inspiration sandbox, if you will. >> Absolutely, you know, and I think, here's an example. It's hard to have a gallery show of all digital stuff. Beause then it's just prints of things that you've done. There's no brush strokes, there's nothing there. And a lot of art collectors want to see the stroke. They want to know it's one-of-a-kind, that's it. >> Yeah the prototype. >> Yeah >> Or whatever the inspiration was. It's inspiring. >> Absolutely. So I tell all artistes, and even to the best computer artists, I'm like, go analog, get your hands dirty, paint. And let that speak as well. >> I've been lucky at my age to see a bunch of waves of innovation in technology. It's super exciting. I'd love to get your thoughts, from your perspective, and the artistry community, and you've been in L.A., over the past 10 years, maybe even 20, but say 10 an easier number. 10 years ago the Iphone wasn't even out, right? >> Oh god. >> So actually, 10 years ago it was the Iphone, but let's say 11 years ago. There was no Iphone, there was, YouTube just hit the scene. So this whole digital culture has just shifted. >> Oh absolutely. >> Apple was a no name company in 2000, right? Micheal Dell once said, " They should give the stock back to stockholders". (laughter) So Steven Jobs proved them all wrong. What is the scene like in your world around the last 10 years? What's been the disruptive change? Where's the enablement? What's been bad? What's been good? What's your thoughts? >> You know, in the art world itself, it's something I just mentioned, what's disrupted the art world, is people coming in and literally just being, what I call, a button pusher artist. You know, they figure out a filter or a tan, or whatever, they make art on their phone, and they're like. And that disrupts a lot of things. Because then it shows, or can teach, kids or artists, or anybody. People our age, whatever, it doesn't matter. That it's okay to do that and skip all of the steps, and I think that's the biggest point is the technology has allowed people to think they can skip steps, but you can't. You can never skip the step- >> What's the consequences of those steps skipping. What's the consequence there? >> So, if that's what you are, and you've figured out filters, and you get hired to do a job, because maybe you're the greatest filter button pusher in the world. But then all of the sudden your computer goes out. What do you do? >> Call Apple Care. >> Yeah, there you go. >> Cheese bar appointment. >> I know, I konw You're screwed basically. >> You are. I mean, I knew way back in the 20 years ago, if you were versed in drawing cars, and you got a job doing storyboards for a commercial, and all of the sudden they said, "Hey we're changing everything. Now we're taking out all the cars and now it's real people". If you're not good at drawing real people, you lost your job. Same basic concept. >> Yeah. >> You have to take it all in, you know, in a giant ball. And for the people who are like, "I don't want to touch a computer". Man, that's- >> So it works both ways. >> Absolutely works both ways. >> So what you're saying, if I get this right, is the computer's a great enable and accelerant of a finished product. >> Rob: Absolutely. >> So you use it, you'll take this print you did behind us, you'll touch it up, and you'll turn it into posters, you'll sell it, you'll syndicate it. >> Yep. >> Etcetera, etcetera, but you did the work here in an hour. With both hands. You did it just on the fly, total creative, creativity. >> Yeah, I mean, today's world, I think, if we let things go too much then the computer takes over and we loose a part of ourselves. >> And what about your social friends. Like musicians, you know? >> Oh my god. >> So what's the musician vibe, same thing? I mean tools are out there now, my son's doing some stuff on Ableton live, he loves that software suite, but he's still laying some guitar licks down. >> Absolutely, and you know, the great thing about in the music scene, I heard this a lot when Pro Tools first came out. Everybody was like, "That's the death of the producer". No, that was the beginning of a different kind of producer. And if you can do things at home and you're good, then it's great. >> What's the culture like in L.A. right now in terms of the creative producer, creator? Cause you've got like a maker culture on the geek side. Robotics, maker culture put stuff together, build some new things. Now you got a creator culture which builds off the maker culture, then you got the builder culture all kind of coming together. What's the success formula in your mind, besides the managing the tools. What's the mindset of the new producer, the new director, the new artist? What do you see as success points? >> These are some of the best questions I've ever been asked. Like, literally in every interview I'm answering the same ones. No, this is great. I think, I think it's a little bit of the wild west out in L.A., you know, and all over. Because, you're forming amalgamations. The director of a movie is no longer, possibly, just a director. He's also working on some of the cinematography. Maybe he's an editor, you know, it's a jack of all trades thing. And I think a lot of the people that had one trade going in, and were really good at it, are finding that they're getting passed up sometimes by the person who can do four or five different things including being able to be versed at technology >> Yeah we're seeing a lot of the things happen in the computer industry, just to share on my side of the table. Data scientist is the hottest job on the planet. Doing data. Some of the best data scientists are anthropologists. >> Really? >> Like weird majors in college. But they have a unique view of the data. They're not parochial in their thinking. They're looking at it differently. Or they have a math background, and obviously math is pretty important in data science, but also, it's not just prototypical, you got to be this spec. It's a little bit of a different artsy kind of a feel, cause you got to be, look at things differently. You got to be able to rotate around 360. >> And that's exactly it. That you've got to have, you got to be thinking outside of the box at all times nowadays. >> Well Rob what's next for you? What' going on? You got a lot of things going on. >> Rob: Oh wow. >> You got a lot of business ventures, you make a lot of money on your prints, you're famous. You're exploring new territory. What are some of the boundaries you're pushing right now creatively, that's really getting you excited? >> Well, I'm going to be directing a movie coming up. Which I find great because it allows me to take every bit of all the things I know and put it into a package, that's fun. I've got several gallery shows coming up. I've got a gallery show that I'll be doing with Stan, which will be New York and L.A. And, just getting on stage with more and more bands. You know, I think- >> You're a cult of personality, what's it like working with Stan? He's a cult of personality. >> Oh my god, Stan is, Stan's great. >> People yelling stuff at him, "hey what do you think about that". I mean there's a lot of culture in the Marvel Comics world. >> Oh man he, you know, and look he's like what, 95. And he's got more energy than I do. Literally last night, we're all out to dinner and I left before everybody else did. Stan outlast me. A 95 year old guy, and I'm like, "I'm too tired, I got to go to bed". And Stan's still going, you know. >> The energizer bunny. >> He's an animal. >> Well great for coming on. Thanks for the inspiration. In all seriousness, thanks for coming out, appreciate it. >> Oh, my pleasure. >> Love talking tech here; Samsung obviously is huge with Android, that's what you do. What do you do with Uber? Let's get that out on the table. What's your role at Uber as an engineer? >> I'm an Android engineer, I work on UberEATS, which is our food delivery product. I've been at Uber for about three years now. So I've gotten to see UberEATS grow from just a tiny operations experiment, in LA, all the way up to being in over 120 cities and having its own app. >> Uber's got that great culture; trying new things. Love the iteration and our family uses the competitor, DoorDash, and I can't wait for UberEATS to come to Palo Alto. Is it in Palo Alto yet? >> Yeah, it is. >> I better try it out. So let's talk about Samsung, obviously this is a developer's conference, you're on the front line, building the app on the Android side. >> Yeah >> Google was on stage yesterday so there it is, it's all out there, Samsung innovating with the handset. Great reviews on the new 8, great screen. This is an Apple-esque going on here. They're there, they got an iOT strategy, so they're bringing together lifestyle. >> Yeah. >> Okay, this is the new user experience. Okay, so has Android gone up? They got Bixby. >> They got Bixby, yeah. >> What's your experience with Android and developing in the environment? >> Well I've been developing on Android for about four or five years now, and it's wonderful. It's open, it enables you to actually go and build. Using more of the APIs and having more ability to connect into the phone itself. To be honest, I love it. It's one of those where you actually get to take your ideas and ship it out to a much broader range of people. >> Build things that are still very very beautiful and very usable to people. >> I was talking with Sam Ramji, who's heading up Cloud product management at Google, as well as, developer programs across Google. We were talking at VM World, and I know their conference is more Cloud oriented. >> Hmm Hmm >> Talking about the user experience and Google is hyper-focused on building open-sourced libraries. >> Hmm Hmm >> So Google is going to be contributing all this goodness, you got the tensor flow, you got all this innovations going on at Google, that's translating to the edge of the network, we're seeing that with Samsung. House devices are great, you got TVs that are known for that, but connecting the smart things is really their strategy. As a developer, how do you look at that landscape, because you're looking at now tons of open source goodness coming in, from Google and then the communities, Android leveling up on capability. >> Hmm hmm >> And with the open APIs, where do you try to navigate, how do you extract the signal from the noise in the community? >> Well basically, you look for whatever libraries are actually used very heavily by people that have latest commands. If it comes from something like from Google, or from other really strong reputed open source players, like Square, you'll end up seeing adoption of that a lot more. When you then go into internet of things, it becomes also like how you see community - the chicken and egg thing. Is this the best opportunity to go for right now? Is the community there, can I monetize this? How do you integrate it? >> Yeah, that's the big question, what's the integration? So let me ask you a question on the Android. In your opinion, Android, Apple IOS, leveled up, in terms of capability? >> Pretty much, yeah. >> What's the difference between IOS and the Android, if you could explain to someone that's knocking on the door of both developer communities. >> Well basically, I would go for who you were trying to go for first. Are you trying to target the U.S, and trying to target that higher end of consumer? Or are you trying to have a mass appeal? For a lot of small start-ups, I'd actually say go IOS first, it makes sense. But when you want to bring it to the global market that's when you really, really, really need Android. When you want to bring it to places around the world where there are more Androids than IOS, that's definitely something that just needs that core experience. >> Is there anything that Android has, because it seems to me that Android has a lot more unique opportunities to customize. >> Yes. >> I think that seems to appeal to developers. When I look at our data, we look at our audience, I'll see the general purpose, I call general purpose Apple because Apple is like fine jewelry. Everyone wants to have the high-end suits, and the high-end code, whatever. But, you don't have the flexibility because it's kind of a walled garden from Java's standpoint. You have the open garden with the Android, that community, their playing more in open source, you're seeing block chain, you're seeing all these kinds of cool communities. What are some of the things that Android offers in this open approach that you like? Is there things that jump out at you? >> Well a lot of it's the ability to get customized, to have better security controls, to have widgets on your home screen. From a developer's standpoint, to have more flexibility about when you ask for permissions vs. when you don't. Also, the richness of the notifications, we've had that for a while on Android. It's like you can do actions and have things animate and keep things like progress bars on there for quite some time and IOS is finally catching up to that. >> And you're happy with Android? >> Oh, very much so. >> Alright, so what's your take on this show at Samsung? What's your vibe on the show, feeling, they got some good stuff? When do they need to work on things? >> Ummm. >> Give me the positive review and then give me the critical what they can do better? >> Yeah, I think actually bringing everything together in a connected cloud makes a lot of sense. Developers don't really like fragmented APIs. If you have to actually go talk to five or six different services to get something done, that's a lot more effort and a lot more overhead of understanding of how to connect to each one. So bringing it all together in one place, especially if that can have the overhead of, handle the overhead, making it secure, and doing data storage, and all that stuff, makes a lot of sense. >> Awesome. Hilary, final question for ya, personal question, put you on the spot here. What's the coolest thing you've built this past couple of years? That you coded, could be anything. >> Ohhh. >> What's the coolest thing that you feel >> Personally? >> Yeah. >> Alright, so I guess it was a year and a half now, there was a team of four of us that build the new Android Eats app. Built it from scratch in about three and a half months It was a team that was magical and never happens in Silicon Valley. It was three women and a latino dude, and we shipped it. >> No way. >> Yeah. >> Three months? >> Yeah, three and a half months. Starting in September, shipping early. >> We're talking, on the drawing board, on the design, >> Yeah. Literally, start to end. First line of code in early September, end of code writing, like wrapping and shipping it up right before Christmas. >> That's the new format, three women and a latino dude. (laughing) Congratulations, anything you'd like to share with the audience about the development scene here, what you're thinking about, what you're passionate about? >> I really really loved the piece of using technology to build more human connection, better humanity. Great to see you. >> Great to see you, John. >> We see each other all the time at the industry events, usually enterprise and some cloud events. We've been seeing each other a lot at these, kind of consumer events. >> Yeah. >> Sounds like the consumerization of IT is happening. >> Big crossover. Yeah, I don't believe there is any consumer or enterprise, there's just degrees of, you know, how much security, how much management ya get, right? It's got to be a good consumer device to be used by anyone. >> What are some of the analyst reports you guys are putting out now? Obviously, you've been covering apps, to kind of set that up. As you know, we always talk in the past about IoT, >> Maribel: Yeah. >> The intelligent edge, cloud, and the role of app developers that are coming into the enterprise. Every CIO has got a mandate. More app development. Devops. Devops. It's hard. How is this helping? >> You know, I've previously come at this from the concept of mobile enablement in the enterprise, right? And now, it just seems like we're just looking at new applications, new experiences that cross boundaries, right? Is it at your home? Is it in a hotel? Is it on your corporate campus, right? I think the role of the app developer is changing to be more encompassing. I think the big news in all the shows we go to now is like AI and machine learning. That term is just everywhere. It's the IoT of 2017, right? Last year was IoT; this year it's AI and machine learning. So we're seeing a lot of that for the app dev community. >> And now you start to see Augmented Reality, also known as AR, in this space of Samsung and Apple and these new app developers. Augmented Reality core, obviously from a development standpoint, big news here at the Samsung conference. The other big news is ARCore and ARKit, ARKit is the IOT piece. [Maribel] - Mhm. >> So we've been seeing a lot of slowdown in Iot. For instance, everyone is kicking the tires on Iot, but it's industrial Iot that's getting the traction. >> Yeah, I think industrial IoT is getting the traction because they've been at it for years, right? It was M2M before that. If you look at what is happening in consumer IoT, it's still an absolute disaster. So, I think the big news of the day, for Samsung, I mean, obviously, we just talked about how AI was in there, we talked about how ARVR was in there. But, what we didn't talk about is the fact that now we're looking at the SmartThings Cloud. And this is the attempt to say, listen, we've got many different clouds; how do we unify clouds as Samsung? And then, also, how do we let other people participate in the cloud? 'Cause the real challenge is, everybody has their fiefdom right now. >> John: Yeah. >> You know, you're in the Apple fiefdom, you're in the Google fiefdom, you're in the Alexa Amazon fiefdom. How do we get to a point where I can just use my stuff? >> Yeah, this is classic breaking down the silos in the world we talk about in the enterprise. >> Yeah. >> And that's been like a two generation initiative. But you look at the guest I just had on theCUBE, Mary Min and Greg Harris before that. They're a different culture. They don't really give a crap about plumbing. >> Maribel: (laughs) No, no. >> They're producing AR games. they've got security challenges. So their development challenges are very DevOps native. They didn't sign up for DevOps, they just are DevOps cloud native. So, that world is one, then you got the IT guys going, wait a minute, I got to support this new edge device. >> Right. I've got to manage it, I've got to secure it. >> Those worlds are coming together. >> Maribel: Yes, absolutely. >> Your thoughts on Samsung's opportunity; are they poised, do they care about IT; IT care about Samsung? >> You know, Samsung's a big company, right? So it really depends on what division of Samsung you're looking at, whether or not they care about IT. What I would say though, is that they're trying to make moves that will can across the board now, right? Trying to make a cloud that can be secure for your consumer things, but can also be upleveled if you want to make it an enterprise of things cloud as well, right? The AI concept is really about just creating usability. And, I think when we think of DevOps, what we think about is creating better application experiences that can know you, that can respond to you. And this is the whole... we talked about Big Data a few years ago, remember everything was Big Data, right? Well Big Data is now machine learning and AI, which is the natural evolution of it. So, I'm starting to see a lot of things that can be used across Samsung. So, I do think in that regard, they're well positioned. They've got a lot of technology in the home. They've got a lot of presence for the enterprise mobile camp. The IoT camp, I think is a wild card for everybody right now. >> What do you think about Samsung's chances with the cloud they have? Because they sprinkle a little bit of cloud in there. >> Maribel: Yeah. >> They didn't talk about data at all, which I was surprised. They kind of inherently... I mean it's a privacy issue; a security thing. But I love the presentation about the kitchen. >> Maribel: Oh yeah, that was great. >> Because the kitchen is where... >> The family hub for the home, right? >> The family hub, that's where everyone hangs out at the parties, right? Everyone ends up in the kitchen. But it kind of highlights this consumerization trend. They kind of sprinkled cloud, but I'm not seeing cloud... I'm not seeing, like, we're bringing compute to you. So, is that just native for Samsung? Is it a missed opportunity? Are they strong there? What's your thoughts? >> I think you actually started with this whole dialogue of well, does anybody really care about what the background technology is, right? So I think we're definitely a little lighter on the terms and more about what the use cases were. Like, why do you use this? They have semiconductors, they have a cloud, they have security, they have devices. They've got a lot of things, so it's really not about the technology as much as it used to be, right? What I think some of the differences might be is a cloud for what? >> Yeah. >> And they are actually taking the approach of we've got a cloud for things and we know what these things are. So I think they're well positioned in that regard because they will have a specific cloud that's not just a generic cloud. >> I think they want to own the interface. To me, my take away, squithing through the hype is they want to own the interface edge. If you contrast say Samsung to say Alibaba group, which we were just covering them in China, compare them to Amazon, you'll see a contrast in strategies. Obviously, Amazon is just blowing everyone away on a massive scale. And they're not even in China. So, if they were actually in China the numbers would be off the charts. >> Maribel: Yeah, be a different thing, yeah. >> But, lets take Alibaba, for instance, and Samsung. Alibaba's an eCommerce company. But they don't want to be known as an eCommerce company. They're heavily invested in data. That's front and center of their message. Smart cities, they're talking about. They have a big cloud that they're pumping out, so that's much different, for them, they don't have an edge device, ya know? >> Yeah, well.. >> Samsung does, but we don't hear cloud, smart cities. We hear family hubs, smart TV, Bixby. >> But it is an experience world, right? And I think that's been the problem with technology adoption to date. You can't figure out how to use it, right? So the next big evolution of technology isn't necessarily about creating a new thing. It's about being able to use a thing. I think Enjon actually made a great comment when he said we use about 10% of the functionality in our cell phone. Why is that? You don't even know it's there. You don't know how to find it, you don't know how to turn it on and off. Like how do you just simplify what we have today? And if they can do that, that was, or used to be, the hallmark of Apple right? >> John: Right. >> And now people are like, well, even Apple products are kind of of complex compared to what they used to be. So how do we get this back to we can use the stuff that we already have built. >> You're nailing it, Maribel. I totally agree with you 100% because if you look at the big waves of innovation: web 1.0 '90's. Mid '90's, '95. Web 2.0 and then now Blockchain and cloud. >> Absolutely. >> All the winners simplified things, reduced the steps it takes to do something and made it easy to use. >> Yeah. >> That's the magical formula. >> Frictionless. >> FYI, entrepreneurs, simplify, make it easy to use and reduce the steps it takes to find stuff; to do stuff. >> Absolutely. >> That's the magical formula. Okay, so, with that in mind, critical analysis of Samsung and a positive analysis of Samsung, then. What did they do right here and what can they work on? >> Okay, so what they did right: I think they are finally trying to pull together all the different versions of Samsung and allow you to have a couple of things, Bixby and cloud, to go across devices; that's right. What I think they still need to work on is there's still boundaries there. It's not exactly clear like where things start, where things end. And they're a little cryptic on the details right now. >> John: You mean under the hood. >> Under hood, I mean I think devs are here to figure out what's going on. How do I make this happen? So there better be some real serious deep dives in these dev sessions so that they know exactly, when they leave, what they can build with Samsung. And how does it work with non-Samsung things. That's still a huge wild card. >> And obviously, cloud, multi-cloud enterprises, you need infrastructure. >> Yeah. >> I mean, smart cities, smart homes, you need plumbing. You need to have compute power, you need some storage. I'm not hearing any of that here. >> No, I don't think that that was a tone that they were trying to take. I think they've been looking much more high level at, if you're a developer, what experiences could you have. I'd also like to see more about how to help monetization. If you go to IO, you go to WWDC, there's always these big slides about how are we going to make money as developers by using this platform. And so that's something we need to see a little more of. >> I got my Samsung smaller phone. I'm going to have to get the Galaxy, the big one, looking good. The screens are great, the cameras are great. >> The Note 8 is really great. It's a good device. >> They're the one with the pen, that's on the Note. Okay, Maribel, thanks for coming on. Appreciate you sharing your analysis. Quick update, what are you doing now? What are you up to? What are they key research pillars? >> Yeah, everybody's trying to figure out what machine learning and AI mean for them. And then, what are the real use case behind IoT. So, we talked a lot about industrial Iots's, right? Anything else? Is there Iot for GENbiz? We'll have to find out. >> Maribel Lopez, been on theCUBE so many times, she's practically an analyst on theCUBE here. Great to have you come on, really appreciate your insight. I'm here with Gregarious Narain, who's the co-founder of Before Alpha, an old friend of mine who introduced me to pod-casting back in 2004, right when the MP3 was put into the RSS feed. The early days of blogging, the early days of social. You're one of the most prolific social engineers I know. You've been there from day one. Great to see you. >> Yeah, you too, man. Long time. >> What a wave it's been. >> I know. >> Web 2.0, you were at the front end of creating with-- >> Fortunately they didn't make a 3.0. [Both Chuckle] >> Thank God, because Web 2.0 bursted. But those were the days, I mean, just think back, okay, Web 1.0 post-bubble burst, Web 2.0 you were part of a crew of folks. We were all small community at the time, really kind of rubbing nickels together trying to make things happen. You know, back then TechCrunch was formed, PodTech was formed, you had your venture going on, and we all were, before social media existed, we were doing stuff. Scoble was brought down from Microsoft with my start-up, PodTech. But, we were all kind of trying to figure out this new infrastructure. And then the bubbling burst a little bit, but it ended up turning out to be true that social infrastructure was created. Facepost we saw pre-Facebook was obsolete; MySpace. But the social graph, okay, that extended out from RSS with enabled blogging created some great innovations. We're seeing the value of interest graphs develop. >> Yeah. >> And a term that I coined, called the Value-Graph is now extending on top of the interest graph. Some term that we call in theCUBE which is a new form of collaboration is happening. You're riding this new wave, you've got your new firm. You're leading companies through transformation. What's your take of the Samsungs of the world, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google. You got a lot of these old tech guards. >> Yeah. >> Trying to be consumer companies and infrastructure companies, B-to-B means B-to-C. But B-to-B is 'boring to boring'. >> Yeah. >> We don't want B-to-B anymore, we want the new. >> Gregarious: That's right. >> Everything to everything. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> Exciting to exciting. >> I think, you know, you nailed a lot of the points, I think, that are really interesting, because, you know, innovation is really about sort of like, blending cultural change and technological change together, right? And forming new things. And it usually is a succession of small iterations, And some moon shots, right? And I think like what Samsung's doing that's really interesting is that they bring all that stuff online in real time. Like, we don't wait, you know, ten years to hear about what the next innovation is. It's popping out before you even warm up your other phone, right? I think, you know, in the States, we're almost at a little bit of a disadvantage in seeing the breadth of Samsung, because like such of their footprint is actually significantly bigger. It's not nearly as adopted here, but I think as, you know, this, the theme today was the intelligence of things, really. I think it was a really powerful idea really. >> And they're onstage with Google, you see the relationship with Google, shining forward, I see a lot of big applause there, Google, also Android, not Apple, no iOS. >> Yeah, yeah. >> But this speaks to the consumer company of Samsung Hardware, even their IOT they are under the hood. >> Right. >> Geeky stuff, they put extra security modules in there, for device security, because now the hardware stacks are merging with software stacks. >> That's right, yeah. So, this is the challenge, because you know how hard it is to do database work. >> Yeah. >> We got a lot of unstructured data. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> Data is now a real-time dynamic, self-driving cars. You can't have latency less than nanoseconds. >> Gregarious: Yeah, that's right. >> And so, databases just don't cooperate that way. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> So a new architecture is being developed. What's your vision and thoughts about how companies are re-imagining? What are you seeing out there? I know it's early innings, but what are your thoughts? >> Well I think, you know, we went through this software as a service generation, right? Where, sort of software was at the center, right? Social was at the edge. Now the human is moving to the center, and I would say, with that, they're clutching to their devices, right? And so, there is a piece of hardware with every person basically, that's invoked. And I think hardware is becoming as extensible as software ultimately. And I think it is also being deconstructed, right? And I think a log of that Web 2.0 sort of aura was really the deconstruction, or the breakdown of sort of large monolithic services, down into smaller, discreet services that are addressable and serviceable. We're seeing that happen out on the hardware side as well. Things as really just micro-devices, you know, that embody all the pieces. >> If you look at the trend lines, right now we're kind of going back, but connecting the dots forward, there's a massive tsunami going on in opensource development. Linux Foundation was just down in L.A., talking about a exponential growth in new software shift, and a new class of developers coming in. Containerization in Cooper Netis' points to microservices, a whole other level of developer goodness at the top of the stack, freeing up the infrastructure configuration for the cloud, or 'dev ops' as we call it. >> Yeah. >> This is the phenomenon, this is the big wig. This isn't about developers being the guys writing, punching out code, this is front lines stuff. And certainly AR shows and devices from Samsung show. >> Well, and I think the interesting thing is that, with these hardware building blocks too, though, it's allowing software developers to articulate hardware without actually learning the hardware bits and pieces, right? So I think it's like, much idea obstraction, like, you don't have to know how byte code was generated now to work on the web, you sort of, don't necessarily know hardware is put together to be able to actually command an army of hardware pieces. >> How familiar with Samsung's cloud and data strategy, one of the things I see missing in the keynotes today, and clearly missing in the show, so this is kind of a critical analysis of Samsung, is I don't see a lot of the cloud. I see Smart Cloud, Samsung Cloud sprinkled around. I don't see a lot of cloud specifics. And they're not being specific around how the data is being used. >> Yeah. >> Like Alibaba there in China last week, data, data, data, refueling data, data acquisition, data usage, using data as a development tool, I'm not seeing that here. >> Well, I- >> Am I missing it, or...? >> I don't know, well I think at some of the pavilions around there are deeper dives in that, but I might argue that this is almost an intentional thing, right, like in some ways, because we're consumerizing more and more of these pieces. You know, AI scares the crap out of a lot of people. Right? Like and so do I really want to go deeper? >> You mean in a creepy way, or just like a surveillance way? >> I think all ways, right? Like, people are, you know, much like with personalization, you want to all wait until it's too good, right? And you know, I think this is a challenge. >> John: Like what else do they know about? >> Yeah, exactly, right? And so, how much of weeds are necessary? I think like at a developer-centric event like this, yes, like there definitely should be deeper dives, but likely not on that, I mean- >> So, from a messaging standpoint, probably best not to put data out there? It brings up questions. >> Yeah, all this stuff, this is Blendo, right? It all becomes consumer now, right? Like, so the more you put out there, the more you sort of alienate, potentially, adoption. >> So one of the things that we see, obviously, with theCUBE covers hundreds of events in the Enterprise and emerging tech area, but as we get more to the consumers with Samsung, Alibaba, Amazon, and so on, the consumerization trend is definitely here. That changes how businesses do business. IT, information technology, or called IT departments are no longer a department, it's now a fabric of how companies work because you have on-premise hardware, you buy your servers, but now you're operating on a cloud model. >> Yeah. >> You're using public Cloud with it; Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba, Samsung, whatever, do people care, if it works? >> Yeah. >> So this new phenomenon is shaping how companies are architecting their innovation strategies. >> Yeah. >> You guys are doing a lot of this at your Before Alpha venture. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> What are you guys doing, is it early days? Are you just basically like, crawl, walk, run stage? Give us an update on the customer. >> Yeah, we look at innovation from like four points of view. As I mentioned earlier, that technological versus cultural, and really, you know, it goes back to the hardest start-ups, right, it's like when large companies see start-ups, they're like, we love what these guys are doing, and the real question they should ask is, "why do these guys exist?" Right? And usually, it's like either one thing, right? Like our norms or our beliefs have changed on the cultural side, or there's a new model of efficacy, or efficiency that's possible, right, inside of your business. So, we will get a perspective change, like am I in the right business, right? Is Samsung in the hardware business, or are they in the intelligence business? Right, like sort of question their positing now, right? What's the persona then, if we're in the intelligence business, 'cause suddenly it's not just the people who buy hardware bits and pieces, it's all the people who consume intelligence. What are the processes we use to build that stuff, how do we surface it, and of course, what are the products? What are the things that land in people' hands? >> Yeah, and I think one of the things I would add to that, is that the element of how they use compute power, because we look at internet of things, which is a message here, it's not too sexy, mainstream doesn't get IOT, but AI can service itself, self-driving cars essentially, you know, machine learning meets IOT which you could call AI. People can grop that and understand the self-driving car, but, you know, airplane connected to the internet, or machines on a factory line, that brings up the role of the data, so the compute power is critical. You don't want to move data around the network, so it's interesting how companies will buy their compute. Do they rent it? Do they send it around like a virtual machine? >> Yeah. >> So these are like legacy infrastructure things that are really high impact to architecture. >> Yeah, well you know, and also when you think about you know, fractional compute, and the whole timeshare model for compute, it is also another area where you have to really readjust, and reconfigure the way your entire system works, to be able to take advantage of it. >> Yeah, and one of the things we're seeing, when it comes to Intel transforming from being a chip company to a supplier of equipment to basically a compute company. >> Yeah. >> We're seeing things that- >> It's that perspective change, right? >> Well, yeah, I mean you got to look at computers now, with Cloud, unlimited potential resources. >> Exactly. You can spin up a zillion virtual machines on the cloud, to do an edge analysis, whether it's a car or something else that's a luxury we didn't have back in the days when you were doing your first venture, did we? >> Yeah, no. >> Whole new world. Final thoughts, what are you working on now? What's the coolest thing you're doing? Give us an update on what's happening for you in the next year or so. >> Ah, the coolest thing, I think, the most exciting work is when we work with companies who sort of understand that either the future is upon them, or that they need to get ahead of it, right? And so, like I say when we're working with customers who do have perspective change, it's like really reinventing their universe, I think that's really, really powerful. It's better, you know, when it's proactive, as opposed to like, great, someone just sat on our head, but you know, sometimes you get there how you get there. So we're doing a lot of work I think looking at like, the technology of the future, but more importantly, how it will impact consumers today, and you know, really the evolution of your own customer base. >> Co-founder of Before Alpha, he's the 'Lead Alpha.' Gregarious, great to have you on theCUBE. Final thought, you've seen many waves, you've worked as a CTO, you've worked on start-ups, you worked with database, you worked social technology, now you're working kind of helping customers put together the future. What's the big learnings that you've seen over the past ten years that you're putting into place now, from a practical perspective to bring to your customers? >> Yeah, you know, I think everyone asks me, 'what's the secret to innovation?' That's the number one question I probably get. I have a list but the one thing I put at the top of the list is permission, right, which is that organizations tend to fail at this because people don't feel like they have permission to do it, they don't have permission to fail, they don't have permission to not work on something else that's taking up fifty percent of their calendar, right? And I think, you know, you see Samsung's innovative culture right, like for other brands, companies, corporations to be successful, if they don't enable, give that permission to their employees, they're never going to make it. >> Certainly with Cloud, you can try something new, and iterate, we see the lean start-up culture, kind of growing and artistry kind of coming in mainstream. Thoughts on artistry and art in technology coming together? >> I think it was a natural, peanut butter and jelly kind of moment from the beginning. Right, you talk to any engineer, any developer, they view what they do as art, right? And the expression of that, it takes any number of forms. >> And the great news is at the front lines, as they get more consumer tech, with like Samsung and Apple, you see guys out in the front lines really adding value, changing the scope of what's possible. >> It's the creator movement, right? Like they were having here is a big theme at this event as well. >> Right, creator moment, building the good apps, great technology, just theCUBE, creating great content here on the ground, at the edge of the network, here at the Samsung Developer Conference in Moscone West in San Fransisco. Covering InterConnect 2017 brought to you by IBM. >> Hey welcome back everyone, we are live in Las Vegas for IBM InterConnect 2017. This is the CUBE's coverage of IBM's Cloud and data show. I'm John Furrier, with my co-host Dave Vellante. Our next guest is Abby Kearns, Executive Director of Cloud Foundry Foundation. Welcome to the CUBE! >> Welcome, thank you! >> Thanks for joining us, so Cloud Foundry, you're new as the executive role, Sam had moved on to Microsoft? >> Abby: Google. >> Google, I'm sorry, Google, he was formerly at Microsoft, former Microsoft employee, but Google, Google Cloud Next was a recent show. >> Yeah. >> So, you're new. >> I'm new. >> John: To the reins but you're not new, new to the community. >> I've been a part of the community for several years prior to joining the foundation a year ago I was at Pivotal for a couple of years so I've been part of the Cloud Foundry community for several years and it's a technology that's near and dear to my heart and it's a community that I am very passionate about. >> And the emergence of Cloud Foundry if you think about it has really kind of changed the game it's really lifted all the boats, if you will, rising tide floats all boats. IBM uses it, you've got a lot of customers. Just go down the list of the notable folks working with Cloud Foundry. >> Well, look no further than those that are on our board and those that represent the strategic vision around the Cloud Foundry, so IBM, Pivotal, but, Dell EMC, and Cisco and SAP and VMware and Allianz and Swisscom. And of course, Pivotal. I think all of them really bring such a broad perspective to the table. But then broadening beyond that community, our community has grown so much. A lot of people don't realize that Cloud Foundry has only been an open-source project for just a little over two years, so January 2015 marked when it became an official open-source project. Prior to that it was part of Pivotal. And in that little-over-two years, we've grown to nearly 70 members in our community and are just excited to continue to grow and bring more perspectives to the table. >> So what has been the differences, a lot of people have been taking a different approach on for Bluemix, for instance, they have a good core at Cloud Foundry. Is it going the way you guys had thought as a community, that this was the plan all along? Because you see people really kind of making some good stuff out of the Cloud Foundry. Was that part of the plan, this open direction? >> Well I think part of the plan was really coalescing around the single vision of that abstraction And what's the whole vision of Cloud Foundry, it's to allow developers to create code faster. And whatever realm that takes. Our industry is evolving and it's evolving so quickly and exciting, all of these enterprise organizations that are becoming software companies. I mean how exciting is that? As we think about the abstraction that Cloud Foundry can provide for them and the automation it can provide, it allows them to focus on one thing and one thing only, creating code that changes their business. We're really focused myopically on ensuring that developers have the ability to quickly and easily create code and innovate quickly as an organization. >> So on the development side, sometimes standards can go fall down by forcing syntax or forcing certain things. You guys had a different approach, looking back now, what were the key things that were critical for Cloud Foundry to maintain its momentum? >> I think a couple of things. It's a complex distributed system but it is put together amazingly well. Quality was first and foremost, part of its origins. And it's continued to adhere to that quality and that control around the development process and around the release process. So Cloud Foundry as an open-source project is very much a governance by contribution. So we look for those in the organizations and different communities to be part of it and contribute. So we have the full-time committers that are basically doing this all day, every day, and then we have the contributors that are also part of the community providing feedback and value. >> And there was a big testimonial with American Airlines on stage, that's a big win. >> Abby: Yes, it is a big win. >> Give us some color on that deal. >> I can't give you any details on the deal that IBM has-- >> But that's a Cloud Foundry, IBM-- >> But it is Cloud Foundry, yes. >> You guys were part of the Bluemix thing? >> Yes. And American Airlines is a company that I have a lot of history with, They were a customer of mine for many years in the early 2000s, so I'm thrilled to see them innovating and taking advantage of a platform. >> So, help us unpack this conversation that's going on around PaaS, right? >> Some people say, "oh, PaaS is pase," but it's development tools and it's programming and it's a platform that you've created, so what do you make of that conversation? What implications does it have to your strategy and your ecosystem strategy? >> Well, I for one don't like the term PaaS anyway, so I'm happy to say PaaS is pase. Because I do think it's evolved, so when I talk about Cloud Foundry, I talk about it as a Cloud application platform. Because at the end of the day, our goal is to help organizations create code faster. The high degrees of automation, the abstraction that the platform brings to the table, it isn't just a platform, it is an enabler for that development. So we think about what that means, it's, can I create applications faster and do I have a proliferation of services to your ecosystem point that enable applications to grow and to scale and to change the way that organization works. Because it's a technology-enabled business transformation for many of these organizations. >> John: It's app-driven, too, that's the key to success. >> It's app-driven, which is why we talk so much about developers, is because that's the key, if I'm going to become a software company, what does that mean? I am writing code, and that code is changing the way I think about my business and my consumers. >> And the app landscape has certainly changed with UX creativity, but now you've got IoT, there's a real functional integration going on with the analog world going digital, it's like, "Whoa, "I've got all this stuff that's now instrumented "connected to the internet!" IoT, Internet of Things. That's going to be interesting, Cloud has to power that. >> I think it does, because what is IoT reliant on? Applications that take advantage of that data. That's what you're looking to gain, you're looking to have small applications streaming large amounts of data from sensors, be it from cars, or be it from a manufacturing plant, if you're thinking industrial IoT, so Cloud Foundry provides the platform for many of these applications to be developed, created, and scaled at the level that companies like GE, and Siemens, and others are looking to build out and tackle that IoT space. >> It's open, I mean we can all agree that Cloud Foundry's the most open platform to develop applications on, but developers have choices. You're seeing infrastructure as a service, plus you're seeing SAS kind of minus emerge. How should we be thinking about the evolution, you said earlier it evolved, where is it evolving to? Obviously you bet on open, good bet. Other more propriet... I don't even know what open is anymore sometimes (Abby laughs) >> But we can agree that Cloud Foundry's open. But how should we be thinking about the evolution going forward? >> Well that's the beauty of open, right? What is open-source, open-source brings together a diverse set of perspective and background to innovate faster. And that's where we are, we're seeing a lot of technology evolve. I mean, just think about all of the things that evolved the last two years. Where we've had technologies come up, some go down, but there's so much happening right now, because the time is now. For these companies that are trying to develop more applications, or trying to figure out ways to not only develop these applications, but develop them at scale and really grow those out and build those and IoT, and you're getting more data, and we're capturing those data and operationalizing that data and it comes back to one thing. Applications that can take advantage of that. And so I think there's the potential, as we build out and innovate both the ecosystem but the platform will naturally evolve and take advantage of those winds from these organizations that are driving this to scale. >> So scale is the linchpin. >> Abby: Yeah. >> If you think about traditional paths, environments, if I can use that term, they're limited in scale, and obviously simplicity. Is that another way to think about it? >> I think about it this way, the platform enables you to run fast. You're not running fast with scissors. You want to be able to run fast safely. And so it provides that abstraction and those guardrails so you can quickly iterate and develop and deploy code. If I look at what... HCSE as a company. They went from developing an application, it took them 35 people and nine months to create an app, right? And now with Cloud Foundry, they're able to do it with four people and six weeks. It changes the way you work as an organization. Just imagine as you scale that out, what that means. Imagine the changes that can bring in your organization when you're software-centric and you're customer-first and you're bringing that feedback loop in. >> And you guys do a lot of heavy lifting on behalf of the customer, but you're not hardening it to the point where they can't mold it and shape it to what they want is kind of what I'm-- >> No, we want to abstract away and automate as much as possible, the things you care about. Resiliency, auto-scaling, the ability to do security and compliance, because those are things you care about as an enterprise. Let's make that happen for you, but then give the control to the developer to self provision, to scale, to quickly deploy and iterate, do continuous delivery. All of those things that allow you to go from developing an app once a year to developing an app and iterating on that app constantly, all the time. >> So I've been wanting to ask you to kind of take a step back, and look at the community trends right now. PC Open Stack has a trajectory, it's becoming more of an infrastructure, as a service, kind of settling in there. That's gone through a lot of changes. Seeing a lot of growth in IoT, which we talked about. You're starting to see some movement in the open-source community. CNCF has got traction, The Linux Foundation, Cloud Native, you've got the Kubernetes, I call it the Cold War for orchestration going on right now so it's a really interesting time, microservices are booming. This is the holy grail for developers for the next gen. It's going to be awesome, like machine learning, everyone's getting intoxicated on that these days, so super cool things coming down the pike. >> For sure, I think we're in the coolest time. >> What's going on in the communities, is there any movement, is there trends, is there a sentiment among the developer communities that you see that you could... Any patterns developing around what people are gravitating to? >> I think developers want the freedom to create. They want the ability to create applications and see those come to fruition. I think a lot of things that were new and innovative a couple of years ago and even now, are becoming table stakes. For example, five years ago, having a mobile app as a bank was new and interesting and kind of fun. Now, it's table stakes. Are you going to go bank with a bank that doesn't have one? Are you going to bank with a bank that doesn't have it? It becomes table stakes or, who doesn't, if you don't have fraud detection which is basically event driven responses, right? And so you think about what table stakes are and what, as we think about the abstraction moving up, that's really where it's going to get interesting. >> But open-source community, is it going to move to these new ground, what I'm trying to get at is to see what's happening, what's the trend in the developer community. What's hot, what's fashionable. Is there new projects popping up that you could share that you think is cool and interesting? >> Well they're all cool and interesting. >> John: You'd rather not comment. (laughs) >> I think they're all cool and interesting, I think, you know, CNCF is a sister organization underneath The Linux Foundation. >> John: They kind of inherited that from Kub Con though. Kubernetes Con. >> Yeah, I think they're doing interesting things. I think any organizations that's promoting Cloud Native application architecture and the value of that, we all deserve to be part of the same conversation because to your point earlier, a rising tide lifts all boats. And if every organizations is doing Cloud Native application architectures and Cloud Native solutions, it's going to be super interesting. >> We just had STRAD at Duke, we ran our own event last week called Big Data SV, and it's very clear to us that the big data world industry and Cloud are coming together and the forcing function is machine learning, IoT, and then AI is the appeal, that's the big trend that's kind of, puts a mental model around but IoT is driving this data and the Cloud horsepower is forcing this to move faster. It seems to be very accelerated. >> But, it also enables so much, I mean if you can operationalize this data that you're aggregating and turn it into actionable apps that do things for your business, save money, improve logistics, reach your users better and faster, you start to see the change and the shift that that can bring. You have the data married with the apps, married with the in point sensors and all of a sudden this gets to be a really interesting evolution of technology. >> So what's your hundred day plan, well you're in the hundred day plan already. So what's your plan for this year as new Executive Director for Cloud Foundry, what's on the agenda, what's your top three things you're going to chip away at this year for objectives? >> Developers, developers, developers, does that count as top three? >> More, more, more? Increase the developer count? (laughs) >> Just really, reaching out to the developers and ensuring that they're able to be successful in Cloud Foundry. So I think you'll hear more from us in the next couple of weeks about that. But, ensuring-- >> John: The proof points, basically? >> The proof points, but just ensuring they can be successful and ensuring that scale is affable for them, and then really, our summits are even changing. We've actually added developer tracks to our summit, to make them a place not only where you can learn about Cloud Foundry, but also where you can work with other developers and learn from them and learn about specific languages, but also, how to enable those into Cloud Native application architectures and I think our goal this year is to really enrich that development community and build that pipeline and help fill those gaps. >> And celebrate the wins like the American Airlines of the world, and as IBM and others are successful, then it gets to be less... You don't want to have cognitive dissonance as a developer, that's the worst thing, developers want to make sure they're on a good bus with good people. >> You've obviously got some technology titans behind you, IBM the most prominent, I would say, but obviously guys like VMware, and Cisco, and others, but you've also got [Interference] organizations, guys like Allianz, VW, Allstate I think was early-on in the program. >> JPMC, Citibank. >> Yeah, I shouldn't have started, 'cause I know I'd leave some out, but you're the Executive Director, so you have to fill in the gaps. That's somewhat unique, in a consortium like this. Somewhat, but that many is somewhat unique. Is there more traction there? What's their motivation? >> Abby: As a user? >> Yeah. >> Well, to your earlier point, we're an open-source, right? And what's the value, if I'm an enterprise and I'm looking to take advantage of a platform, but also an open-source platform, open-source allows me to be part of that conversation. I can be a contributor, I can be part of the direction, I can influence where it's going and I think that is a powerful sentiment, for many of these organizations that are looking to evolve and become more software-centric, and this is a good way for them to give back and be part of that momentum. >> And Cloud's exploding, more open-source is needed, it's just a great mission. Brian McDaniel is here he's an infrastructure architect at the Baylor College of Medicine, not to be confused with Baylor University in Waco Texas, anymore. Brian Welcome to theCUBE. >> Thanks for having me appreciate it. >> You're very welcome. Tell us about the Baylor College of Medicine. >> So, Baylor College of Medicine is a, first and foremost, a teaching facility but also the leader in research and development for healthcare in the Texas Medical Center in Houston Texas. We currently employ roughly 1,500 physicians and so they occupy a multitude of institutions, not only at Baylor but other facilities and hospitals in and around the Texas Medical Center. >> So, it's kind of' healthcare morning here Stu. We've been talking about electronic medical records, meaningful use, the Affordable Care Act, potential changes there, HIPAA, saving lives. These are big issues. >> We're not at the HIMSS Conference Dave? >> We should be at HIMMS. So these are big issues for any organization in healthcare. It's just exacerbates the challenges on IT. So, I wonder if you can talk about some of the drivers in your business, compliance, and in new tech and maybe share with us some of the things that you're seeing. >> Absolutely so first and foremost, we are an Epic system shop. That's our EMR. So, from a enterprise and clinical operation, that is our number one mission critical application. It provides your electronic medical records to our staff, regardless of where they're physically located at. So that alone is a demanding type of solution if you will, the mobility aspect of it. Delivering that in a fast manner and a repeatable manner is upmost important to our physicians because they're actually seeing patients and getting to your records and being able to add notes and collaborate with other institutions if necessary. So, time to market is very important and accessibility is also up there. >> Right so, you mentioned that collaboration and part of that collaboration is so much data now, being able to harness that data and share it. Data explodes everywhere but in healthcare, there's so much data to the extent we start instrumenting things. What are you guys doing with all that data? >> Right now, it lives within the clinical application, right in Epic, but as you pointed out that is where the value is. that is where your crown jewels so to speak are at. That data is now being looked at as a possible access point outside of the clinical operation. So, it's environment is going to be even more important going forward, when you look to branch out into some of the basic sides in more of a research, to gain access to that clinical data. That historically has been problematic for the research to be done accessing that information. >> So, in the corporate we like to think of, from an IT perspective, you got to run the business, you got to grow the business, you got to transform the business. It's a little different in healthcare. You kind of got to comply. A lot of your time is spent on compliance and regulation changes and keeping up with that. And then there's got to be a fair amount that's at least attempting to do transformation and in kind of keeping up with the innovations. Maybe you could talk about that a little bit. >> Absolutely, particularly on the innovation side, we work closely with out partners at Epic and we work to decide roadmaps and how that fits into the Baylor world. Case in point, a year ago we were set to go to the new version of Epic, which was 2015. And Epic is nice enough to lay out requirements for you and say, here's what your system needs to meet in order to comply with Epic standards. So, they give you a seal of approval, so to speak. And there's monetary implications for not meeting those requirements. So it's actually dollars and cents. It's not just , we want you to meet this. If you do then there's advantages to meeting it. So, they provided that to us and went though the normal testing phases and evaluations of our current platform, both from compute and storage. And honestly we struggled to meet their requirements with our legacy systems. So the team was challenged to say well, what can we do to meet this? We have our historical infrastructures, so if we're going to deviate from that, let's really deviate and look at what's available to the market. So, Flash comes to mind immediately. So, there's a multitude of vendors that make Flash storage products. So we started meeting with all of 'em, doing our fact finding and our data gathering, meeting with all of 'em. First and foremost, they have to be Epic certified. That eliminated a couple of contenders right off the bat. Right? You're not certified. >> I would expect some of the startups especially. >> It did. Some of the smaller, Flash vendors, for example, one of 'em came in and we said, well, what do you do with Epic? And they said what's Epic. And you kind of scratch your head and say thank you. >> Thank you for playing. >> Here's the door. So, it eliminates people but then when we meet with PURE, and we talked to them and we meet 'em and you get to really know that the family and the culture that they bring with the technology. Yes it's got to be fast but Flash is going to be fast. What else can you do? And that's where you start learning about how it was born on Flash, how it was native to Flash and so you get added benefits to the infrastructure by looking at that type of technology, which ultimately led us there, where we're at running Epic on our Flash arrays. >> And Brian, you're using the Flash stack configuration of converge infrastructure. It sounds like it was PURE that lead you that way as opposed to Cisco? Could you maybe walk us through that? >> That's very interesting, so we're a UCS shop. We were before PURE. So when PURE came in, the fact that they had a validated design with the Flash stack infrastructure, made it all that more easier to implement the PURE solution because it just is modular enough to fit in with our current infrastructure. That made it very appealing that we didn't have to change or alter much. We just looked at the validated design that says, here's your reference architecture, how it applies to the Flash stack. You already have UCS. We love it, we're a big fan. And here's how to implement it. And it made the time to market, to get production work loads on it, very quick. >> And the CVD that you got from Cisco, that's Cisco plus PURE but was it healthcare Epic specific or was that the PURE had some knowledge for that that they pulled in? >> So, that was one of the value adds that we feel PURE brought was the Epic experience. And whether that's scripting, the backups, and if you're familiar with Epic, the environmental refreshes that they have to do. There's seven Epic environments. And they all have to refresh off of each other and play off of each other so, >> So you have a window that you have to hit right. >> And you do right? And historically that window's been quite large. And now, not so much which makes everybody happy. >> Hey, that's what weekends are for. >> Absolutely, yeah, our DBAs attest to that right? So, we would like to think we've made their world and life a little bit more enjoyable 'cause those weekends now, they're not having to babysit the Epic refreshes. Back to the point of Epic experience, that was instrumental in the decision makings from a support with the PURESTORAGE help desk, awareness of what it takes to run Epic on PURE, and then going forward knowing that there's a partnership behind Epic and PURE and certainly Baylor College of Medicine as we continue to look at the next versions of Epic, whether that's 2018 and on to 2020, whatever that decision is, we know that we have a solid foundation now to grow. >> And Brian I'm curious, you've been a Cisco shop for a while, Cisco has lots of partnerships as well as, they've got a hyper-converged offering that they sell themselves. What was your experience working with Cisco and do they just let you choose and you said, I want PURE and they're like, great? Do you know? What was that like? >> To your point, there's validated designs for many customers and Cisco is kind of at the hub of that, that core with the compute and memory of the blade systems, the UCS. They liked the fact that we went with PURE 'cause it does me a validated design. And they have others with other vendors. The challenge there is how do they really integrate with each other from tools to possibly automation down the road, and how do they truly integrate with each other. 'Cause we did bring in some of the other validated design architecture organizations and I think we did our due diligence and looked at 'em to see how they differentiate between each other. And ultimately, we wanted something that was new and different approach to storage. It wasn't just layering your legacy OS on a bunch of Flash drives and call it good. Something that was natively born to take advantage of that technology. And that's what ultimately led us to PURE. >> Well, PURE has a point of view on the so called hyper-converged space. You heard Scott Dietzen talking this morning. What's your perspective on hyper-convergence? >> Hyper-converge is one of those buzz words that I think gets thrown out of there kind of off the cuff if you will. But people hear it and get excited about it. But what type of workloads are you looking to take advantage of it? Is it truly hyper-converged or is it just something that you can say you're doing because it sounds cool? I think to some degree, people are led astray on the buzzwords of the technology where they get down to say, what's going to take advantage of it? What kind of application are you putting on it? If your application, in our case, can be written by a grad student 20 years ago that a lab is still using, it does it make sense to put it on hyper-converged? No, because it can't take advantage of the architecture or the design. So, in a lot of ways, we're waiting and seeing. And the reason we didn't go to a hyper-converged platform is a, Epic support and b, we were already changing enough to stay comfortable with the environment and knowing that come Monday morning, doctors will be seeing patients and we're already changing enough, that was another layer that we chose not to change. We went with a standard UCS configuration that everyone was already happy with. That made a significant difference from an operational perspective. >> Essentially, your processes are tightly tied to Epic and the workflow associated with that. So from an infrastructure perspective, it sounds like you just don't want it to be in the way. >> We don't. The last thing we want in infrastructure getting in the way. And quite frankly, it was in the way. Whether that was meeting latency requirements or IOPS requirements from the Cache database or the Clarity database within the Epic system, or if was just all of are just taking a little bit longer than they expect. We don't want to be that bottleneck, if you will, we want them to be able to see patients faster, run reports faster, gain access to that valuable data in a much faster way to enable them to go about their business and not have to worry about infrastructure. >> Brian, PURE said that they had, I believe it's like 25 new announcements made this morning, a lot of software features. Curious, is there anything that jumped out at you, that you've been waiting for and anything still on your to do list that you're hoping for PURE or PURE and it's extended ecosystem to deliver for you? >> Great question, so at the top of that list is the replication of the arrays, whether that's in an offsite data center or a colo and how that applies to an Epic environment that has to go through this flux of refreshes, and from a disaster or business continuity standpoint, we're actively pursuing that, and how that's going to fit with Baylor. So, we're very excited to see what our current investment, free of charge by the way, once you do the upgrade to 5.0, is to take advantage of those features, with replication being one of 'em. >> And then, I thought I heard today, Third Sight is a service. Right? So you don't have to install your own infrastructure. So, I'm not sure exactly what that's all about. I got to peel the onion on that one. >> To be determined right? When we look at things like that, particularly with Epic, we have to be careful because that is the HIPAA, PHI, that's your records, yours and mine, medical records right? You just don't want that, if I told you it's going to be hosted in a public cloud. Wait a minute. Where? No it's not. We don't want to be on the 10 o'clock news right? However, there's things like SAP HANA and other enterprise applications that we certainly could look at leveraging that technology. >> Excellent, we listen, thank you very much Brian for coming on theCUBE. We are live in San Fransisco for Informatica World 2017. This is theCUBE's exclusive coverage, two days. We're on day two, meeting all the top executives, customers, sentures, system integrators, all the best guests here at Informatica World. Part of Informatica's three year coverage with theCUBE. I'm John Furrier with Peter Burris. Our next guest is Bala Kumaresan, who's the senior vice president and general manager of data security for Informatica, formally in charge of engineering, been in R and D, super technical, knowledgeable. Thanks for spending the time to come on theCUBE, appreciate it. >> Thank you. We get to ask you all the tough questions under the hood. What's in the engine of innovation. >> Absolutely. >> Peter: First question, the innovation engine for Informatica, what is it? Describe it quickly. So, the innovation engine of Informatica is entirely metadata driven. It's a data centric metadata driven engine. We call this concept CLAIRE. (John chuckles) It's EI driven, and in a sense, in order for you to make better decisions, you really need to look at your metadata. You really need to-- One of the most important things in security, which actually, current traditional systems lag behind, is the lack of data centricity, resulting in lack of accuracy. If you really want highest time-to-value, and the ability to respond quickly, you really need to be smart enough. Not only out-of-the-box accuracy, but also a period of time, learn, and look into the inputs that are specific to your ecosystem. Specific to that particular environment, and be able to provide actionable insights. Actionability... Actionability without accuracy is basically disaster. >> One of the big drivers in today's market is some of the penalties around governance. Okay, so, there's um, what do you call, G... >> Peter: Oh, GDRP? >> GDRP >> Bala: GDPR! GDPR. >> GDPR, and then Europe is different than North America, but bottom line is you get penalized. There's a risk management piece around the governance, but that's if you've been hacked, so lets talk about the security is fundamental to governance. They play hand in hand. What bet did you guys make on security, and what should people watching know about what Informatica's doing with respect to security, data security? >> I think, great point. General data protection regulation at Europe, that's a regulation that's actually going to go effective May 2018. It's going to be, like, 4% of your annual revenues are going to be the fines in case for every non-compliance and so on. So, we believe that part of the problem that exists today, with or without GDPR, GDPR is today, tomorrow it could be something else, is that lack of versatility, lack of versatility. The entire traditional data security is all about perimeter. You secure the perimeter, and everybody inside the perimeter is trusted. I was just telling, where trust begins, vulnerability seeps in. (Peter chuckles) So you really need to trust and verify. And, what are you protecting? You're really protecting data, so insights into the data is super critical. Our investment on secular source is centered around the Informatica Metadata Company, and insights into the data, how to you translate that into a security prospective. That is precisely what we have done. So, what kind of data you have? Classify the data. How is it being used, where are all that is present, who the users are. Everything is changing. >> So data is the fundamental centroid for security, because perimeter's gone, right? I mean, you got the cloud. I mean, not gone, but its not the fundamental-- >> It becomes the primary citizen in a security regime. >> Yes, yes. So... >> Well said. >> Absolutely. It doesn't matter where your data is. It could be in your relational databases, it could be in the cloud, it could be in your big data systems. It does not matter. It's all about data. Let me give a couple of examples as to the problems that exist today. Once you are inside the perimeter, and you are an authorized user, you pretty much are a trusted person, and then nobody is monitoring your behavior. Are you still the same person, or has somebody hacked into your account? Or did the person turn into... Did his role shift? None of that is being-- So, basically, two main things we are delivering part of our innovation. Role-based access control. It's not user, user... Identity based access control, it is actually role-based access control. If your role is in a IT, versus if your role is a development organization, You, within a company, could move but your privileges actually should be based on the role. That's number one. The second thing is that, look, you... Let's say you have access to all the sales force, because you are a sales force, you're actually part of our sales team. You typical patterns are that you're look at 10 records, 20 records a day, even though you have access to the million records, right? But, the base line and the behavior changes. They're actually indicate something. So this is part of trust and verify. You trust a person, but you also need to verify. Keep up with the changes, and that's fundamental to the data centric security. >> I want to amplify a piece of that, and tell me if I'm so appropriately. Role based security, I would actually ask, are we going to move to something we might call context based security, where context is what do you do. The role is part of what you do. So it says, what do you do, and who are you, and how are you doing it. So that's number one, and number two is, how does this relate back to some of the metadata initiatives that you guys have, where increasingly, some of the most crucial metadata will be the metadata that's ultimately used to put bounds on how the data gets employed. >> Let me answer that question in three different dimensions. Number one, yes. Absolutely. Role is part of the context. It's not the entire the entire context, but role is part of the context. >> Peter: Correct. >> Any protection, and any access to the protected information needs to be role based. Number two, the data context that we have in our product, where we go and catalog and classify all the data, that is very much used in prioritizing. For example, an alarm that goes on in a school during the school hours versus an alarm that goes on in a junkyard. They're both alarms. Today most of the traditional security actually kind of categorizes them as similar. An alarm went off. But, are they the same? No, they are not. So that's where the second level of the context. The third level of the context is in terms of the real... Basically, third level of the context is actually, what do you need to be in compliance with. What kind of usage is allowed? It's actually nothing to do with that particular usage itself, its actually got to do with a whole bunch of other safeguards that you need to manage. That's where our central policy management comes in the picture. So with these three contexts, the business context, the user context, and the category or the classification of the data context, it is totally-- >> All that has to be part of the security regime. >> Absolutely. That's actually, the metadata that we have, which drives those accurate decisions, accurate decisions for prioritization as well as detection, and the right protection. >> So here's a question, then. Again, I'm going to test this on you. Historically people have separated data, data sec-- metadata, data security. In the future, how do we keep those separate? We have to start seeing how they come together, right? >> I think, fantastic, fantastic question. Our view is that data governments is about... The governance actually has a slice across many dimensions. One of them is the data stewardship, the provenance, and the quality of the data, and so on. The other part is actually about data security governance, in terms of what kind of safeguards the role based access control. Really, what kind of risks that you are entitled to and, how are you managing the risks. So, that's our views. So, when we look at metadata, the metadata is actually driving multiple decisions. One of them is quality. The other one is risk. The other one is protection. So, we see this as a unifier bringing things together. Informatica is uniquely positioned with our Axon, EAC, and Secure@Source products. In fact, one of the things that we are announcing in Informatica World is actually about our GDPR bundle, because GDPR is actually about, as much about data governance as about privacy, and also it is about policy driven data protection. >> Well, privacy, policy, inform. The governance regime. You can't separate. It's not just about compliance, and I'll give you-- I'm going to test one more thing on you. At some point in time, as we think about digital business and the idea that a digital business is defined more by its use of data assets. Otherwise its just a business, and we want to protect our data. We're also worried about how we share our data, and how others share data with us. We want to make sure that we are not inappropriately exploiting somebody else's data because we don't want to create a billion dollar business that fundamentally, upon inspection, was predicated on the misappropriation of somebody else's data. >> Absolutely. You are touching upon the consent, and the consent control, and what kind of validations we have in place to evaluate... This might not be popular. What I'm going to say is not necessarily popular, right? I think it goes back data ethics, as well. I think companies consider customer data, partner data as their asset. They, 20 years, 30 years of how the data's been used, I think the realization is going to sink in. The realization is already sinking in with respect to the ethics, with respect to the trust-- >> John: That it's not their data. >> It's not their asset. >> What's sinking in is it's not their data assets. >> Its not their data. They are, in fact... They are, in fact, obligated. They're, in fact, supposed to use that with care. They're, in fact, accountable for that data. So, while regulations are starting to put those things in place, with GDPR being one and then every other... Geography is going to come up with its own set of modifications similar to that. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for companies to go to that higher order, and really start to think this as, why they are ethical. What is the ethics that they want to put in place, above and beyond what the regulations talk about. I think Informatica is uniquely positioned with our metadata driven strategy, with our metadata cloud engine which is driving solutions across quality, governance, and security as well as constant control over-- Yeah. >> Well let me make one more point on that. It comes back to this fundamental notion of your brand is the promise you're making to the marketplace. What you just described will have more impact on company brands in 10 years, and probably even five years, than the characteristics of the products they sell very often. >> Absolutely. If I'm an investor, I'm thinking about reputation. What is the company's reputation? What kind of pull effect the reputation has towards expanding the business. That is where the ethics, actually, is in higher order of existence. Where, people want to partner with you. People what to do business with you, and I think that's actually where we can be very helpful. I mean, there're already intelligent solutions, use them intelligently. >> Its interesting you bring up data ethics, because I wanted to jump in on that, because if digital transformation, if we believe that its happening, and of course everyone's talking about business transformation, which is the outcome of digital transformation, ethics transforms too, digitally. >> Bala: Digitally, yes. >> So, where is, in your mind, the ethics with data? Is there, I mean there's articles that's thought leadership around it, but, is it actually in use. Do actually people have data ethics in your opinion? Is this something that's talked about but not walked? Your thoughts on that, reactions that-- >> I think it's an evolving concept. So far, companies have been taking advantage of the data. The evolving concept is going to catch on. It is actually catching on. Analysts are actually talking about it. I think we are thinking about it. We are thinking about what we are building is actually kind of going to help customers go there. But I want to also separate it. There is actually something that is at a higher level of existence versus what is really, absolutely necessary and need it today? Policy driven data protection while we are able to standardize the policies across the enterprise, across all your data silos. That is super critical, to get the immediate problem resolved while we can start to build on that's access towards the ethics. >> This economy's a scale. You can't just jump the data ethics and be ethical. You got to, you got to build your way up. Have a trajectory and tract record of foundational-- >> Here's what I say John, and Bala, you know, tell me if you think I'm wrong, but... >> Make sure you say if you think he's wrong. >> Yeah, please do, cause I have been wrong in the past. You said something very interesting. You said, "Yeah, everybody's talking about data, >> Data ethics. or additional business. And that's just it. They're doing it, but they're not doing plan-fully, because we often don't understand exactly what it is, and the process of thinking though the ethics is crutial to informing that planful approach to thinking about digital business. At least, that's my perspective. What do you think about that, Bala? >> I think the versability. The versability at the board level, the versability at the senior exec's level, as to where you stand. What is your risk? What is your compliance scorecard? Do you have a plan in place where there's an informed remediation plan? Did we actually allocate sufficient budget? Its not about budget justification, its actually about did you allocate budget for this risk. Also, do we have systems in place that are continuously assessing and reassessing to basically drive towards risk correction and towards maintaining the compliance. Those are key, and I think that addresses what you are saying, and I think I agree with you. >> So, lets take this very practically. If you look at the industry, you see companies like Apple and Microsoft being very clear about how they're going to use their customer's data. >> John: Facebook? (John laughs) >> You see Facebook and Google being less clear about how they're use your data. You see Amazon right in the middle, and people wondering which way they're going to go. This is a huge issue. Not to talk about it's security level, but just overall business model. This is going to have an enormous impact on a global basis of how we think about digital business and the role data's going to play in creating new shareholder customer value-- >> If data's the new gold, so here's my take on this. Love to get the reaction. If data's the new oil, if data's the new gold, the new heartbeat, whatever metaphor you use. If its the new gold, let's just say its the gold. That's valuable. So, the value will shift to whoever has the data. Someone's going to wake up and say, hey wait a minute. That's my data. And I think you're starting to see that a little bit with Facebook certainly. Less Google because the utility is pretty well intergraded, but at some point the utility value has to be greater than than the value of the data gold, if you will, cause otherwise, I will demand the data back. So I think there's end user, or the primary use of the data, the primary user of data-- >> This is a very coarse view, but I wonder if Uber right now is wondering how they could've used data security different, relative to the 200 million, what ever it is, lawsuit that Waymo's bought against them. So this issue of ethics and the role the data's going to play is going to have enormous implications-- >> John: Love that conversation on the eithics side. >> Yeah, I think actually if you look at the way companies use data, and then the way you lay out in terms of where different companies are, that is actually a spectrum of how you could question them. One is actually how they can help the consumer. That's something that we all love. And then there's an absolute exploitation. >> John And Peter: Yes. And then there is something in the middle, and ethics is actually not about exploitation. Ethics is actually about keeping people informed. Letting them know exactly-- >> John: Transparency. >> Transparency, and-- >> John] There's always an underbelly everywhere. >> Peter: Well, you can a bad ethics. (Bala laughs) >> All those bad actors out there. Okay, we got to wrap it up. I want to get one quick comment from Bala. Obviously, I can't help but jump to blockchain when I start thinking about security. Thoughts on blockchain. How's that going to be relevant, if any. Obviously, supply chain. You're seeing some indications there. Blockchain has a potential mechinism-- >> The blockchain technology is very compelling. It has the integrity. Its basically... One of the things that I've always talked about with my team and in general for prag development is that security has always been in the past, as an afterthought. As something that sits outside, and if you were to go back and design some of the systems that we built in the last 20, 25 years, with so much emphasis on privacy and compliance and security and protecting breach, wouldn't security be built in, part of the design? Part of the code. >> John: The primary (John laughs) >> part of the design. Right? So, very appealing from that point of view. The applicability of blockchains today is mostly around transactional ledgers and... basically transfer of value, and so on. I think one of the, you know-- It also has, it also comes with certain baggage. The blockchain remembers everything. You know, (John laughs) So, let me zero in on... I think everybody's trying to figure out how to actually apply blockchain beyond the traditional, beyond the ledger and so on. I think it's going to have a place. Its going to have a place in... We're already starting to see that some applications where shot-dam contracts like, for example, you're doing a building contract that is a supplier, that is actually a valuer, and it is a project. It exists for a temporary period and it goes away. All of the coordinating parties are coordinating with confidence. They're sharing and colliaberating with confidence. Blockchain actually gives them confidence, because it has-- >> So it's relevant, but it's emmerging. Still at, not, it's early innings-- >> It's relevant. It's emerging. We are very closly looking at it. I think we already have a play there, where one of the main and most important things that blockchains mean is that... Identity. As a unique identity. If you look at some of the old prducts... Customer 360, its all abnout quality of customer data. Data quality for customer data, right? There, perhaps, is a way for us to integrate the blockchain. The other place where we are already looking at is can we consume the information in the blockchain to enhance our metadata? Of course we can. >> Peter: Yeah. (Peter laughs) >> So, those are two low hanging fruits, and of course we'll keep it... We'll stay-- >> We'll have to get you down to our studio in Palo Alto. We'll do a whole segiment on unpacking blockchain. I love blockchain. I think, my personal belief is yeah, there's some low hanging fruit that'll use-cases, but if theirs money to be had in reconfiguring parties working together to create wealth-- I have some crazy thoughts on this, actually. (laughter) So we can not stipulate, because-- >> John: You're definitely coming to Palo-- We're going to go to where you are! >> Did we run out of time, or-- >> John: We're running out of time. We're live here in San Francisco for Informatica World 2017. I'm John Furrier with theCUBE, SiliconeANGLE's flag shift program. We go out to the events and extract the seth-a-pla-noids. Big data architect, enterprise business intelligence strategy and planning with Dell, EMC Dell. Welcome to theCUBE. >> Deepak: Thank you so much. >> Or Dell Technologies. That's a big company now. You got a zillion brands. We just came back from two days at Dell EMC World in Vegas. A lot of action goin' on in your world, but you're here in Informatica World. You are the distinct winner of the Innovation Honorary Award. Tell us about that. That was last night. >> Yeah, exactly. It was a really good. It was great to be there, and part of the Honorary Awards and things like that. Its been really trusting that, well, you should know, big data is coming into maturity at Informatica, and we use a lot of Informatica products to be successful in the big data site. >> So, you're a customer I n this case, with Informatica. You're a customer of theirs. >> Deepak: Yes >> Alright, so how are you guys using Informatica? >> So, Informatica, we use, uh... Well you name it, and we have it so many products that are out there for Informatica right now, so, we started our journey back in 2007 with Informatica Power Center. As we evolved in different silos and different data sets, that got into, over a site regard lot of structure and unstructured data, and the first of big data also started growing tremendously. So, we have a new platform, and we have a data lake today that we harvest a lot of data that's coming from different sources. Some structured, unstructured, semi-structured data. We needed a tool and technology that can help us to actually use our existing skill set, and the army of the people who knows Informatica from the days of 2007 til today, that we have kept in sight. We wanted to level raise our skill set. Then you're creating a bunch of new folks in the big data platform, and starting them from scratch. >> Deepak, Hadoop was supposed to change the world, and like actually kill Informatica. All the press had, "Low End for Matica," and "Big Data Hadoop." Hadoop is just one element, now, of the big data space, or, how we wanted to describe it. Data lakes are also just fine. I don't like the them data lake because they become data swamps if you don't use the data, and as Informatica-- My question is, as data is gettin' laid out, whether it's Hadoop, or in the clouds, making it relevant is a real architectural challenge. Can you share your insight into, how do you guys look at that data architecture? >> Differently, right? So, like anybody else, you know we also face the same problem off record a lot of data or that we put it on, whether it is water data or lake? Whatever you want to call it. Then over the time we realized like, "Oh, okay. "Now what do we do with this data? "What is the value? How we can extract it," right? That's how the tools and technologies around this whole ecosystem comes into the play, which actually provide that value to get that data value extracted from it. Informatica is one of the tools that our choice was offered doing some of the big ops, and going though a process off proof of concept, and we are identified. This is the stage that we have to make a conclusion to say that we want to go with Informatica because of too many reasons I can't speak about, but one the major reason was, what I can say, I can do the same existing skill sets of what we have in house, and improve on top of it. >> So Deepak, the concept of data management used to be associated with managing a file, managing a data base, effectively managing tools that handle data. As we're hearing it increasing applied in the digital universe, I presume at Dell as well, the notion of data management is starting to extend and generalize a little bit differently. How do you see data management? And the next question I may ask you is, from an architectural standpoint, what's the relationship between what you do an architecture standpoint and how you envision data to managed. What is data management to you? >> So the data management is basically like harvesting your data, right? So basically, drives, like I said, data is coming in different forms. You wanted to go and get the data consumption happen from different sources and different silos that we have one time. Now we are at the situation like, what kind of data exists? What is a metadata? What is the governance unearned it, right? So those are becoming more and more and more important as we move and getting mature in this whole data management prospective. >> So, its looking at data across applications and across tools to try to increasingly treat data as an asset that can be managed just like a plant can be managed. Do I got right? >> Exactly. So, we have to realize that now data is an asset. That's where the value is. Your business and your stakeholders, everybody is looking at the data that we extract a value enough. >> So, does a data architect, then... Again a data architect used to be the person who laid out the database manager, and what not. Do you see your job now more as, design plus implementation with an eye towards performance and ensuring peple understand how to use data. Making sure things can be governed. What does the emerging and evolving job of a data architect in this new era of data management as managing data assets? >> So, traditionally with the relational database, it worked pretty well for the architects with the work they are doing, and it worked pretty well. But the thing is with the new changes we are going though, with the fast evolving technologies that we are having and the mobile data that we are getting in different forms. It always gets challenging that it's not just a data architect. It have to be co-- Together with some of the solution architecture together, to see how we have to go and consume all this information, but at the same time, Paul, we are providing value at affect >> So the tools that Informatica is providing are helping you do that? >> Yes the tools at Informatica have definitely helped us, starting at the power center site, which is more inclined towards conditional databases. Today we use big data management tools on our website, which is actually helping us the same kind of value that it provided with the power center. Now we can provide the same value at our new platform. >> So as you look forward over the course of the next few years, do you anticipate that the assets, the data assets that you're creating in Dell, are going to be applied to... How developers going to do things differently? How users are going to do that things differently. How do you see the data architect and data management serving these different consumers of data within Dell? So, what all includes, like, you know the business satisfaction right? The business is trying to get the value of the data yesterday. So, you know what? You need to be so fast enough to deliver the stuff to the business. One of the major capabilities that we are looking at is, to have the self-service capabilities for the business stakeholders so they can go and do themself rather than waiting for the IT or being a bottleneck for them to deliver what they want. >> So I got to ask you about this award. Dell was recently selected as the grand prize winner of the Informatica one million dollar software and services big data ready challenge. Was that cash prize? Michael Dell just spent 69 billion dollars on EMC, you'd probably use-- No, I'm only kiddin' (Peter laughs) Was that cash or was that product services and-- >> No, it's not the cash. You're suggest I'm one of the hundred year award that we got as Dell, being a proactive customer. A few guys who got inbranded. And, so research and the software that actually we are looking at Informatica data and degration hub and Informatica Intelligence Data Lake, which actually will provide self-service capabilities and integration at a single point. >> So you apply-- so, the objective of the self-service capaibility. The outcomes that you seek, you use the data inegration hub and some, for a period of time, some free software and free services to build that pilot, and then roll it outto the organization. >> Exactly. The whole idea is to show the values out of the these tools and technologies that Informatica has been investing` and helping the whole ecosystem to improvise the standards. >> So, Deepak, I got to ask you. We had some of the execs on earlier, and they're talking about, "oh, data's the heartbeat of the organization." You know, kind of cliches, but kind of accurate. We believe that to be true. Certainly, data is the center of the action. But then, it brings up the whole data conversation. Who's the practitioner? Do you have heart surgeons? And then, what about the hygienist? You know you got to have data hygiene. The big data ready challenge is interesting because its always been a challenge to go from pilot to production, but then also its the readiness around an organization's ability to understand what the hell they have, how do they use it, and then how do they take it to the next level? The mastery of doing the data. So, certainly there's different skill sets. How do you look at that analogy, and how would you organize teams around that, because in some cases, there's a heart surgeon needed. You got to redo some surgery on the company, Felt at the data strategy. And, sometimes its just know your hygiene, brush your teeth, if you will, kind of a concept of being ready. Your thoughts and reaction to that? >> So, yeah, initially we also started in the simplest days just to get the data and put it in one place, but it's not; it's just one part of the whole equation. You have so many things like data governance, data quality, data security, because you know, you might have a PIAD now that you want to secure it, and you might have something like, weblocks is doing your security. Everybody has a play in this. Its not just a one thing that you know, here we have the data fusion done, and then, you know, you're good. So it's not that the case. You should just always that the maturity happens in different stages. >> So the hiring and organizing a team, that's a specialty right? You're going to have the more skilled folks, and then some of the, you day to day, maybe an analyst or citizens data wrangler. You know, these things going on. Your thoughts on organizing, and the teams around data. >> Yeah, so one of the teams is that we are starting looking at these. We are harvesting a lot of data scientists interknow to Dell. That's because Dell's the ones, guys stuck Bill Nye on mostly to see, to extract the value of the hidden stuff, that we are not able to see as of today. To do that in an effective manner, we need to know how to unleash those guys and be self sustained by themself, so they can improve the quality and provide the value of innovation. >> The folks that have been following Informatica over the years, they were once a public company. The data warehouse was all the rage. Now, its real time. All kinds of landscape changes in the marketplace. What's Informatica all about today? >> Informatica is no more just data platform. I think its fanning it's wings to do more stuff. Especially on the beginner side. Now you have this Informatica data degration hub, and you are talking about having this intelligent data lake, and things like that. Which is going to be a link to use in learning off machine learning algorithms and things like that, having this whole meditator concept that is matured, or just a metadata manager. And right now, its going very huge because of the different big data platforms are coming together. Its not only the big data platform. The big data platform is very loose term to me. It's just not the Hadoop, you know? It could be... At Dell, we have so many different technologies come together and recall all of them as a data platform for us. We did a platform for us. We know how to just being one of the competent ones. >> So you're saying basically is there's no silver bullet. >> Yes. >> and there is no magical answer. >> But there are skills. >> Yes. >> And so, increasing what you're looking to do, is saying, what are the outcomes? What are the objectives? What are the skills we need to get there? And then, lets look for tools you today are lining up nicely with Informatica. >> Deepak: Exactly. >> So if you think about the next steps that you're going to take, where does the function of a data architect go within Dell, and what kind of recommendations would you make to those users out there who are thinking about how they want to optimize their skills. Their use of their skills in a data analytics world. >> Yeah, sure. So the data architecture is, like I said, knowing the previously in their traditional data warehouse kind of stuff, it was pretty straight forward. But now, they don't-- we are seeing that data architects are getting more and more matured, and I'm getting this data into semi-structured data, and improvising that how the data fit actually get readjusted in the right manner, so that, you know what we can really... Is it like three and one half, or whatever? Is it-- You can't have a data silos anymore? It's like what you need to bring in all data sets together to actually making a meaningful answer-- >> Peter: Well, at least make it possible to bring it together. >> Exactly. >> We had a lot of costs and a lot of pain. >> Yes. >> You may not have to bring them all together. As you said, you don't, its not all about putting it all in the data lake, its about making it possible to acquire. >> Exactly. So you have to know where the data is, you have to be able to quarry, you have to build and reformat on the fly, all these other things to servwe your customers, especially in the self-service world. >> Right. >> So, where does this go? How is this going to drive? What recommendation would you give to companies who are looking to accelerate their use of these new technologies and new approaches? >> I would say this to everybody. Adhere to your customers. Adhere to your business. They are the reason it is for your-- like you know what? There's no person in the organization that knows every domain. So you need to be in a way where right off your sneeze off different data domains that you have, and make sure you pull all these resources together to actually contributing to the whole arbitrational white impact. >> So, start with-- be true to your business. Your customers. Focus on finding data. And then focus on bringing the appropriate level of integration. Not putting it all in one place, but so your customers can be matched to the data they need. >> Deepak: Exactly. >> John: Alright, Deepak, final question. Just your thoughts on the show here. Again 3,000 people and growing every year. The new rebranding, Informatica going into the cloud world. Automation, you're seeing CLAIRE, this new AI meets data. What's your thoughts? >> I think this is phenomenal approach that Informatica is taking right now, and I'm glad. Like you said, there's 3,000 people here really interested to know what's going on and how the things are evolving with Informatica. It's a really great show to be here. Thank you. I can knock down some of that purchase price, but I'm sure you guys are big customer.
