And welcome to this special presentation with Nutanix. We're talking about A New Era In Database Management. To help us dig into it, first of all, I have the Senior Vice President and General Manager of Nutanix Era Databases and Business Critical Applications, that is Bala Kuchibhotla. And one of our other CUBE alongs, Monica Kumar. Who's an SVP also with Nutanix. Bala, Monica, thank you so much for joining us. >> Thank you, thank you so... >> Great to be here. All right, so first of all, Bala a new Era. We, have a little bit of a punj. You've got me with some punjs there. Of course we know that the database for Nutanix solution is Era. So, we always like to bring out the news first. Why don't you tell us, what does this mean? What is Nutanix announcing today? >> Awesome. Thank you, Stu. Yeah, so today's a very big day for us. I'm super excited to inform all of us and our audience that we are announcing the Eratory dot two GA bits for customers to enjoy it. Some customers can download and start playing with it. So what's new with Nutanix Eratory dot two? As you knows 1.0 is a single cluster solution meaning the customers have to have a Nutanix cluster and then have around the same cluster to enjoy the databases. But with Eratory dot two, it becomes multi-cluster solution. It's not just a multi-cluster solution, but customers can enjoy database across clusters, That means that they can have their Always On Availability Groups SQL servers, their Postgres servers across Nutanix clusters. That means that they can spread across Azure Availability Zones. Now, the most interesting point of this is, it's not just across clusters, customers can place these clusters in the cloud. That is AWS. You can have Nutanix cluster in the AWS cluster and then the primary production clusters maybe on the Nutanix and primary enterprise cloud kind of stuff, that's number one. Number two, we have extended our data management capabilities, data management platform capabilities, and what we call them as global time mission. Global time mission with a data access management. Like racing river, that you need to harness the racing river by constructing a dam and then harness it for multipurpose either irrigation projects or hydroelectric project kind of stuff. You need to kind of do the similar things for your data in company, enterprise company. You need to make sure that the right persons get the right amount of data, so that you don't kind of give all production data to everyone in the company. At the same time, they also need the accessible, with one click they can get the database, the data they want. So that's the data access management. Imagine a QA person only gets the sanitized snapshots or sanitize database backups for them to create the copies. And then we are extending our database engine portfolios too to introduce SAP HANA to the thing. As you know, that we support Oracle today, Postgres, MalSQL, Mariadb SQL server. I'm excited to inform that we are introducing SAP HANA. Our customers can do one click sandbox creation into an environment for SAP HANA predown intense platform. And lastly, I'm super excited to inform that we are becoming a Postgres vendor. We are willing to give 24 by seven, 365 day support but Postgres database engine, that's kind of a provision through Nutanix setup platform. So this way the customers can enjoy the engine, platform, service all together in one single shot with a single 180 company that they can call and get the support they want. I'm super duper excited that this is going to make the customers a truly multicloud multi cluster data management platform. Thank you. >> Yeah. And I'll just add to that too. It's fantastic that we are now offering this new capability. I just want to kind of remind our audience that Nutanix for many years has been providing the foundation the infrastructure software, where you can run all these multiple workloads including databases today. And what we're doing with Era is fantastic because now they are giving our customers the ability to take that database that they run on top of Nutanix to provide that as a service now. So now are talking to a whole different organization here. It's database administrations, it's administrators, it's teams that run databases, it teams that care about data and providing access to data and organizations. >> Well, first of all, congratulations, I've taught for a couple of years to the teams at Nutanix especially some of the people working on PostgreSQL really exciting stuff and you've both seen really the unlocking of database. It used to be ,we talked about, I have one database it's kind of the one that everything runs on. Now, customers they have more databases. You talked about that flexibility is then, where we run it. We'd love to hear, maybe Monica we start with you. You talk about the customers, what does this really mean for them? Because one of our most mission critical applications we talk about, we're not just throwing our databases or what. I don't wake up in the morning and say, Oh let me move it to this cloud and put it in this data center. This needs to be reliable. I need to have access to the data. I need to be able to work with it. So, what does this really mean? And what does it unlock for your customers? >> Yes absolutely, I love to talk about this topic. I mean, if you think about databases, they are means to an end. And in this case, the end is being able to mine insights from the data and then make meaningful decisions based on that. So when we talk to customers, it's really clear that data has not become one of the most valuable assets that an organization owns. Well, of course, in addition to the employees that are part of the organization and our customers. Data is one of the most important assets. But most organizations, the challenges they face is a lot of data gets collected. And in fact, we've heard numbers thrown around for many years like, almost 80% of world's data has been created in the last like three or four years. And data is doubling every two years in terms of volume. Well guess what? Data gets collected. It sits there and organizations are struggling to get access to it with the right performance, the right security and regulation compliance, the reliability, availability, by persona, developers need certain access, analysts needs different access line of businesses need different access. So what we see is organizations are struggling in getting access to data at the right time by the right person on the team and when they need it. And I think that's where database as a service is critical. It's not just about having the database software which is of course important but how you know not make that service available to your stakeholders, to developers to lines of business within the SLAs that they demand. So is it instantly? How quickly can you make it available? How quickly can you use have access to data and do something meaningful with it? And mind the insights for smarter business? And then the one thing I'd like to add is that's where IT and business really come together. That's the glue. If you think about it today, what is the blue between an IT Organization and a business organization? It's the data. And that's where they're really coming together to say how can we together deliver the right service? So you, the business owner can deliver the right outcome for our business. >> That's very true. Maybe I'll just add a couple of comments there. What we're trying to do is we are trying to bring the cloud experience, the RDS-like experience to the enterprise cloud and then hybrid cloud. So the customers will now have a choice of cloud. They don't need to be locked in a particular cloud, at the same time enjoy the true cloud utility experience. We help customers create clouds, database clouds either by themselves if that's big enough to manage the cloud themselves or they can partner with a GSIs like Wipro, WorkHCL and then create a completely managed database service kind of stuff. So, this brings this cloud neutrality, portability for customers and give them the choice and their terms, Stu. >> Well Bala, absolutely we've seen a huge growth in managed services as you've said, maybe bring us inside a little bit. What is free up customers? What we've said for so long that back when HCI first started, it was some of the storage administrators might bristle because you were taking things away from them. It was like, no, we're going to free you up to do other things that as Monica said, deliver more business value not mapping LUNs and doing that. How about from the DBA standpoint? What are some of those repetitive, undifferentiated heavy lifting that we're going to take away from them so that they can focus on the business value. >> Yep. Thank you Stu. So think about this. We all do copy paste operations in laptops. Something of that sort happens in data center at a much larger scale. Meaning that the same kind of copy paste operation happens to databases and petabytes and terabytes of scale. Hundreds of petabytes. It has become the most dreaded complex, long running error prone operation. Why should it be that way? Why should the DBS spend all this mundane tasks and then get busy for every cloning operation? It's a two day job for me, every backup job. It's like a hobby job for provisioning takes like three days. We can take this undifferentiated heavy lifting by this and then let the DBS focus on designing the cloud for them. Looking for the database tuning, design data modeling, ML aspects of the data kind of stuff. So we are freeing up the database Ops people, in a way that they can design the database cloud, and make sure that they are energy focused on high valid things and more towards the business center kind of stuff. >> Yeah. And you know automation is really important. You were talking about is automating mundane grunt work. Like IT spends 80% of its time in maintaining systems. So then where is the time for innovation. So if we can automate stuff that's repetitive, stuff that the machine can do, the software can do, why not? And I think that's what our database as a service often does. And I would add this, the big thing our database as a service does really is provide IT organizations and DV organizations a way to manage heterogeneous databases too. It's not like, here's my environment for Postgres. Here's my environment for my SQL. Here's my environment for Oracle. Here's my environment for SQL server. Now with a single offering, a single tool you can manage your heterogeneous environment across different clouds. On premises cloud, or in a public cloud environment. So I think that's the beauty we are talking about with Nutanix's Era. Is a truly, truly gives organizations that single environment to manage heterogeneous databases, apply the same automation and the ease of management across all these different environments. >> Yeah. I'll just add one comment to that. A true managed PaaS obviously customers in like a single shop go to public cloud, just click through and then they get the database and point. And then if someone is managing the database for them. But if you look at the enterprise data centers, they need to bring that enterprise GalNets and structure to these databases. It's not like anyone can do anything to any or these databases. So we are kind of getting the best of both, the needed enterprise GalNets by these enterprise people at the same time bringing the convenience for the application teams and developers they want to consume these databases like utility. So bringing the cloud experience, bringing the enterprise GalNets. At same time, I'm super confident we can cut down the cost. So that is what Nutanix Era is all about across all the clouds, including the enterprise cloud. >> Well, Bala being simpler and being less expensive are one of the original promises of the cloud that don't necessarily always come out there. So, that's super important. One of the other things, you talk about these hybrid environments. It's not just studied, in the public cloud want to understand these environments, if I'm in the public cloud, can I still leverage some of the services that are in the public cloud? So, if I want to run some analytics, if I want to use some of the phenomenal services that are coming out every day. Is that something that can be done in this environment? >> Yeah, beautiful. Thank you Stu. So we are seeing customers who two categories. There is a public cloud customer, completely born in public cloud cloud, native services. They realize that for every database that maintaining five or seven different copies and the management of these copies is prohibited just because every copy is a faulty copy in the public cloud. Meaning you take a backup snapshot and restore it. Your meter like New York taxi, it starts with running for your EBS and that you are looking at it kind of stuff. So they can leverage Nutanix clusters and then have a highly efficient cloning capability so that they can cut down some of these costs for these secondary environments that I talk about. What we call is copy data management, that's one kind of use case. The other kind of customers that we are seeing who's cloud is a phenomenon. There's no way that people have to move to cloud. That's the something at a C level mandate that happens. These customers are enjoying their database experience on our enterprise cloud. But when they try to go to these big hyperscalers, they are seeing the disconnect that they're not able to enjoy some of the things that they are seeing on the enterprise cloud with us. So this transition, they are talking to us. Can you get this kind of functionality with Nutanix platform onto some of these big hyperscalers? So there are kind of customers moving both sides, some customers that are public cloud they're time to enjoy our facilities other than copy data management and Nutanix. Customers that are on-prem but they have a mandate to good public cloud ,with our hybrid cloud strategy. They get to enjoy the same kind of convenience that they are seeing it on enterprise and bringing the same kind of governance that they used to do it. so that maybe see customers. Yeah. >> Yeah. Monica, I want to go back to something you talked about customers dealing with that heterogeneous environment that they have reminds me of a lot of the themes that we talked about at nutanix.next because customers have they have multiple clouds they're using, requires different skillsets, different tooling. It's that simplicity layer that Nutanix has been working to deliver since day one. What are you from your customers? How are they doing with this? And especially in the database world. What are some of those challenges that they're really facing that we're looking to help solve with the solution today. >> Yeah. I mean, if you think about it, what customers at least in our experience, what they want or what they're looking for is this modern cloud platform that can really work across multiple cloud environments. Cause people don't want to change running, let's say an Oracle database you're on-prem on a certain stack and then using a whole different stack to run Oracle database in the cloud. What they want is the same exact foundation. So be so they can be, for sure have the right performance. Availability, reliability, the applications don't have to be rewritten on top of Oracle database. They want to preserve all of that, but they want the flexibility to be able to run that cloud platform wherever they choose to. So that's one. So that's choosing the right and modernizing and choosing the right cloud platform is definitely very important to our customers, but you nailed it on the head Stu. It's been about how do you manage it? How do you operate it on a daily basis? And that's where our customers are struggling with multiple types of tools out there, custom tool for every single environment. And that's what they don't want. They want to be able to manage, simply across multiple environments using the same tools and skillsets. And again, and I'm going to beat the same drum, but that's when Nutanix shines. That's a design principle is. It's the exact same technology foundation that you provide to customers to run any applications. In this case it happens to be databases. Exact same foundation you can use to run databases on-prem in the cloud. And then on top of that using Era boom! Simple management, simple operations, simple provisioning simple copy data management, simple patching, all of that becomes easy using just a single framework to manage and operate. And I will tell you this, when we talk to customers, what is it that DBS and database teams are struggling with? They're struggling with SLS and performance on scalability, that's one, number two they're struggling with keeping it up and running and fulfilling the demands of the stakeholders because they cannot keep up with how many databases they need to keep provisioning and patching and updating. So at Nutanix now we are actually solving both those problems with the platform. We are solving the problem of a very specific SLA that we can deliver in any cloud. And with Era, you're solving the issue of that operational complexity. We're making it really easy. So again, IT stakeholders DBS can fulfill the demands of the business stakeholders and really help them monetize the data. >> Yeah. I'll just add on with one concrete examples too. Like we have a big financial customer, they want to run Postgres. They are looking at the public cloud. Can we do a manage services kind of stuff, but you look at this, that the cost difference between a Postgres and your company infrastructure versus managed services almost like $3X to $4X dollars. Now, with Nutanix platform and Era, we were able to show that they can do at much reduced cost, manage their best service experience including their DBA cost are including the cloud administration cost. Like we added the infrastructure picture. We added the people who are going to manage the cloud, internal cloud and then intern experience being, plus plus of what they can see to public cloud. That's what makes the big difference. And this is what data sovereignty, data control, compliance and infrastructure governance, all these things coupled with cloud experiences, what customers really see the value of Era and the enterprise cloud and with an extension to the public cloud, with our hybrid cloud strategy. if they want to move this workload to public cloud they can do it. So, today with AWS clusters and tomorrow with our Azure clusters. So that gives them that kind of insurance not getting locked in by a big hyperscaler, but at same time enjoy the cloud experience. That's what big customers are looking for. >> Alright Bala, all the things you laid out here, what's the availability of Era rotically dot two? >> Era rotically dot two is actually available today. The customers can enjoy download the bits. We already have bunches of beta customers who are trying it out with the recall big telco companies are financial companies, and even big companies that manage big pensions kind of stuff. Let's talk about that kind of stuff. People are looking to us. In fact, there are customers who are looking for, when is this available for Azure cluster so that we can move some of our workloads to and manage the databases in Azure classes. So it is available and I'm looking forward to great feedback from our customers. And I'm hoping that it will solve some of their major critical problems. And in the process they get the best of Nutanix. >> Monica, last question I have for you. This doesn't seem like it's necessarily the same traditional infrastructure go to market for a solution like this. If I think back to, people think of HCI it was like, Oh! well, it was kind of a new box. We know Nutanix is a software company. More of what you do today is subscription based. So, maybe if you could talk a little bit to just how Nutanix goes to market with a solution like this. >> Yeah. And you know what, maybe people don't realize it but I'm hoping a lot of people do that. Nutanix is not just an infrastructure company anymore. In the last many years we've developed a full cloud platform in not only do we offer the infrastructure services with hyperconverged infrastructure which is now really the foundation. It's the hybrid cloud infrastructure. As you know, Stu, we talked to you a month ago and we talked about the evolution of XCI to really becoming the hybrid cloud infrastructure. But in addition to that, we also offer other data center services on storage DR Networking. We also offer DevOps services with application provisioning automation, application orchestration and then of course, database services that we talking about today and we offer desktop services. So Nutanix has really evolved in the last few years to a complete cloud platform really focusing on the application and workloads that run on top of the infrastructure stack. So not just the infrastructure layer but how can we be the best platform to run your databases? Your end is the computing workloads, your analytics applications your enterprise applications, cloud native applications. So that's what this is. And databases is one of our most successful workloads that's that runs a Nutanix very well because of the way the infrastructure software is architected. Because it's really great to scale high performance because again our superior architecture. And now with Era, it's a tool, it's all in one. Now it's also about really simplifying the management of databases and delivering them speedily and with agility to drive innovation in the organizations. >> Yep. Thank you Monica. Thank you. I I'll just add a couple of lines of comments into that. DTM for databases as erotically dots two, is going to be a challenge. And historically we are seen as an infrastructure company but the beauty of databases is so and to send to the infrastructure, the storage. So the language slightly becomes easy. And in fact, this holistic way of looking at solving the problem at the solution level rather than infrastructure helps us to go to a different kind of buyer, different kinds of decision maker, and we are learning. And I can tell you confidently the kind of progress that we have seen for in one enough year, the kind of customers that we are winning. And we are proving that we can bring a big difference to them. Though there is a challenge of DTM speaking the language of database, but the sheer nature of cloud platform the way they are a hundred hyperscale work. That's the kind of language that we take. You can run your solution. And here is how you can cut down your database backup time from hours to less than minute. Here's how you can cut down your patching from 16 hours to less than one hour. It is how you can cut down your provisioning time from multiple weeks to let them like matter of minutes. That holistic way of approaching it coupled with the power of the platform, really making the big difference for us. And I usually tell every time I meet, can you give us an opportunity to cut down your database cost, the PC vote, total cost of operations by close to 50%? That gets them excited that lets then move lean in and say, how do you plan to do it? And then we go about how do we do it? And we do a deep dive and PC people and all of it. So I'm excited. I think this is going to be a big play for Nutanix. We're going to make big difference. >> Absolutely well, Bala, congratulations to the team. He is the VP GM Nutanix era and business critical lapse at Nutanix. Thanks so much for coming on the island. >>It's an honor to come here and talk to guys. >>So you were up on the main stage this morning. You did a fantastic job doing some demos for us. But up there you talked about your data, your days gold. And you said there are four p's thio the challenges of mining the burning process you want >>you want to go through >>those for our viewers? >>Definitely. So for every business, critical lab data is gold likely anam bigness for a lot of people are anyone. Now the question is like similar to how the gore gets processed and there's a lot of hazardous mining that happens and process finally get this processed gold. To me, the data is also very similar for business could collapse. Little database systems will be processed in a way to get the most efficient, elegant way of getting the database back data back. No. The four pains that I see for managing data businesses started provisioning even today. Some of his biggest companies that I talkto they take about 3 to 5 weeks toe provisions. A database. It goes from Infrastructure team. The ticket passes from infrastructure team, computer, networking stories, toe database team and the database administration team. That's number one silo. Number two is like proliferation, and it's very consistent, pretty much every big company I talkto there. How about 8 to 10 copies of the data for other analytics que year development staging Whatever it is, it's like over you take a photo and put it on. What Step and your friends download it. They're basically doing a coffee data. Essentially, that Fordham be becomes 40 and in no time in our what's up. It's the same thing that happens for databases, data bits gets cloned or if it's all the time. But this seemingly simple, simple operation off over Clone Copy copy paste operation becomes the most dreaded, complex long running error prone process. And I see that dedicated Devi is just doing Tony. That's another thing. And then lineage problem that someone is cloning the data to somewhere. I don't know where the data is coming from. Canister in The third pain that we talk about is the protection. Actually, to me it's like a number one and number two problem, but I was just putting it in the third. If you're running daily basis, and if you're running it for Mission critical data basis, your ability to restore the rhythm is to any point in time. It's an absolute must write like otherwise, you're not even calling The database. Question is, Are the technologies don't have this kind of production technology? Are they already taken care? They did already, but the question is on our new town expert from Are on Cloud platform. Can they be efficient and elegant? Can we can we take out some of the pain in this whole process? That's what we're talking about. And the last one is, ah, big company problem. Anyone who has dozens of databases can empathize with me how painful it is to patch how painful it is to get up get your complaints going to it. Holy Manager instead driven database service, this kind of stuff. So these are the four things that we actually think that if you solve them, your databases are one step. Are much a lot steps closer to database service. That's what I see >>Bala. It's interesting. You know, you spent a lot of time working for, you know, the big database company out there. There is no shortage of options out there for databases. When I talked to most enterprises, it's not one database they now have, you know, often dozens of databases that they have. Um so explain line. Now you know, there's still an unmet need in the marketplace that Nutanix is looking to help fill there. >>So you're absolutely right on the dark that there are lots of date of this technology is actually that compounds the problem because all these big enterprise companies that are specially Steadman stations for Oracle Post Grace may really be my sequel sequel administrator. Now they're new breed of databases in no sequel monger leave. You know, it's it's like Hardy Man is among really be somebody manage the Marta logics and stuff like that so no, we I personally eating their databases need to become seemed like Alex City. Right? So >>most of >>these banks and telcos all the company that we talk about data this is just a means to an end for them. So there should focus on the business logic. Creating those business value applications and databases are more like okay, I can just manage them with almost no touch Aghanistan. But whether these technologies that were created around 20 years back are there, there it kind of stopped. So that is what we're trying to talk about when you have a powerful platform like Nutanix that actually abstracts the stories and solve some of the fundamental problems for database upstream technologies to take advantage of. We combine the date of this FBI's the render A P s as well as the strength of the new tenants platform to give their simplicity. Essentially. So that's what I see. We're not inventing. New databases were trying to simplify the database. If that's what >>you and help make sure we understand that you know, Nutanix isn't just building the next great lock in, you know, from top to bottom. You know, Nutanix can provide it. But Optionality is a word that Nutanix way >>live and time by choice and freedom for the customers. In fact, I make this as one of the fundamental design principles, even for era we use. AP is provided with the database vendors, for example, for our men, we just use our men. AP is. We start the database in the backup, using our many years where we take that one day. That's what we can to protect the customers. Investment. >>Yeah. I mean, I'm curious. Your commentary. When you go listen, toe the big cloud player out there. It's, you know, they tell you how many hundreds of thousands of databases they've migrated. When I talk to customers and they think about their workload, migrations are gonna come even more often, and it's not a one way thing. It's often it's moving around and things change. So can we get there for the database? Because usually it's like, Well, it isn't it easier for me to move my computer to my data. You know, data has gravity. You know, there's a lot of, you know, physics. Tell General today. >>See what what is happening with hyper killers is. They're asking the applications. Toby return against clothed native databases, obviously by if you are writing an application again, it's chlorinated. Databases say there are Are are are even DCP big table. You're pretty much locked technical because further obligation to come back down from there is no view. There's no big table on and there's no one around. Where is what we're trying to say is the more one APS, the oracles the sequels were trying to clarify? We're trying to bring the simplicity of them, so if they can run in the clover, they condone an art crime. So that's how we protect the investment, that there is not much new engineering that needs to be done for your rafts as is, we can move them. Only thing is, we're taking or the pain off mobility leveraging all platform. So obviously we can run your APS, as is Oracle applications on the public lower like oracle, and if you feel like you want to do it on on from, we can do it on the impromptu canister so and to protect the investment for the customers, we do have grown feeling this man, That means that you can How did a bee is running on your ex editor and you can do capacity. Mediation means tier two tier three environments on Nutanix using our time mission technology. So we give the choicest customers >>So thinking about this truly virtualized d be what is what some of the things you're hearing from customers here a dot next Copenhagen. What are the things that you were they there, There there Pain points. I mean, in addition to those four peas. But what are some of the next generation problems that you're trying to solve here? >>So that first awful for the customers come in acknowledges way that this is a true database. Which letters? I don't know what happened is what tradition is all aboard compute. And when when he saw the computer watch logician problem you threw in database server and then try to run the databases. You're not really solving the problem of the data? No, With Nutanix, our DNA is in data. So we have started our pioneered the storage, which location and then extended to the files and objects. Now we're extending into database making that application Native Watch Ladies database for dilation, leveraging the story published Combining that with Computer. What's litigation? We think that we have made an honest effort to watch less data basis. Know the trend that I see is Everyone is moving. Our everyone wants cloudlike experience. It's not like they want to go to club, but they want the cloud like agility, that one click simplicity, consumer, great experience for the data basis, I would liketo kind of manage my data basis in self service matter. So we took both these dimensions. We made a great we made an honest effort to make. The databases are truly watch list. That's the copy data management and olive stuff and then coupled with how cloud works able to tow provisions. Self service way ability to manage your backups in self service. Weigh heavily to do patch self service fair and customers love it, and they want to take us tow new engines. One of the other thing that we see beget Bronte's with ERA is Chloe's. Olive or new databases generally are the post press and the cancer, but there's a lot of data on site because there's a lot of data on Mississippi. Honey, there's a lot of data on TV, too. Why don't we enjoy the same kind of experience for those databases? What? What did they do wrong? So can we >>give >>those experience the cloud like experience and then true? Watch allegation for those databases on the platform. That's what customers ask What kind of stuff. Obviously, they will have asked for more and more, um, br kind of facilities and other stuff that way there in the road map that we will be able to take it off. One >>of the questions we've had this week as Nutanix build out some of these application software not just infrastructure software pieces, go to market tends to be a little bit different. We had an interesting conversation with the Pro. They're wrapping the service for a row so that that seems like a really good way to be able to reach customers that might not even knew no Nutanix tell us, you know, how is that going? Is there an overlay? Salesforce's it? Some of the strategic channel and partnership engagements, you know, because this is not the traditional Nutanix, >>So obviously Nutanix is known. Andi made its name and fame for infrastructure as service. So it's really a challenge to talk about database language for our salespeople. But country that I heard the doubt when I kind of started my journey It Nutanix Okay, we will build a product. But how are you going to the city? And we get off this kind of sales for But believe me, we're making multimillion dollar deals mainly led by the application Native Miss our application centric nous so I could talk about federal governments. And yes, she made perches because it was a different station for them. We're talking about big telco company in Europe trying to replace their big Internet appliances because era makes the difference vanished. We're providing almost two X value almost half the price. So the pain point is real. Question is, can we translate their token reconnect with the right kind of customer? So we do have a cell so early for my division. They speak database language. Obviously we're very early in the game, so we will have selected few people in highly dense are important geographic regions who after that, but I also work with channels, work with apartments like geniuses like we prove head steal another kind of stuff and down the best people to leverage and take this holding and practice. This is the solution. In fact, companies like GE S D s is like people take an offer. Managed database seven. Right. So we have a product. People can build a cloud with it. But with the pro they can offer in a word, why do you want to go to public Lower? I can provide the same cloud. Man is database service more on our picks, Mortal kind of stuff. So we're kind of off fighting on all cylinders in this sense, but very selectively very focused. And I really believe that customers fill understand this, Mrs, that Nutanix is not just the infrastructure, but it's a cloud. It's a It's a club platform where I considered arise like Microsoft Office Suite on Microsoft's operating system. Think about that. That's the part off full power that we think that I can make make it happen >>and who are you know, you said you're going in very tight. Who are these Target customers without naming names? But what kinds of businesses are they? You know? How big are they? What kinds of challenges. Are >>they looking at all? The early customers were hardly in the third quarter of the business, but five. Financial sector is big. The pain point of data mismanagement is so acute there capacity limitation is a huge thing. They are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on this big. When that kind of stuff on can they run in the can extract efficiencies out of this hole all their investment. Second thing is manufacturing and tell Cole, and obviously federal is one of the biggest friend of Nutanix and I happened to pitch in and religions is loaded. And they said, Israel, let's do it real demo. And then let's make it happen. They actually tested the product and there are taking it. So the e r piece, where are they? Run Oracle, Where the run big sequence kind of stuff. This is what we're seeing. It >>followed. Wanna make sure there was a bunch of announcements about era tudo Otto, Just walk us through real quick kind of where we are today. And what should we be looking for? Directionally in the future. >>So we started out with four are five engines. Basically, Andi, you know that Oracle sequel and my sequel post this kind of stuff, and we attacked on four problems this provisioning patching copy, data management and then production. But when we talked to all these customers on, I talked to see Ables and City Walls. They love it. They wanted to say that Hey, Kanna, how around more engines? Right? So that's one will live. But more importantly, they do have practices. They have their closest vehicles that they want to have single pane of management, off era managing data basis across. So the multi cluster capability, what we call that's like equal and a prison central which manage multiple excesses. They weren't error to manage multiple clusters that manage daily basis, right? That's number one. That's big for a product with in one year that we regard to that stage. Second thing was, obviously, people and press customers expect rule rule based access control. But this is data, so it's not a simple privilege, and, uh, you would define the roles and religious and then get it over kind of stuff. You do want to know who is accessing the data, whether they can access the data and where they can accident. We want to give them freedom to create clones and data kind of act. Give the access to data, but in a country manor so they can clone on their cure. Clusters there need to file a huge big ticket with Wait for two weeks. They can have that flexibility, but they can manage the data at that particular fear class. So this is what we call D a M Data access management. It's like a dam on the like construct on the river, control flow of the water and then channel is it to the right place and right. But since Canister, so that's what we're trying to do for data. That's the second big thing that we look for in the attitude. Otto. Obviously, there's a lot off interest on engines. Expand both relation in Cecil has no sequel are We are seeing huge interest in recipe. Hannah. We're going to do it in a couple of months. You'll have take review monger. Dubious. The big big guy in no sequel space will expand that from long. Would it be to march logic and other stuff, But even D B two insiders There's a lot of interest. I'm just looking for committed Customers were, weren't They are willing to put the dollars on the table, and we're going to rule it out. That's the beauty of fair that we're not just talking about. This is day three of four days of coverage. I'm Stu Miniman, my cohost is Dave Velante. We've been talking so much about multi Cloud this week that a pineapple express has hit San Francisco, heavy winds and rains but we're safe and dry inside. They're handing out ponchos and making sure that everybody can still at all the information that they have. Happy to welcome back to the program Bala Rajaraman, who's an IBM fellow and vice president with the IBM Cloud Group. Bala, thanks so much for joining us. >> Very nice to meet you. Very nice to meet you guys and thank you again. Very good to see you guys. So, it's always, and I mean this, an honor to be able to talk to the IBM Fellows. I've had the pleasure of working with a number of IBM Fellows, and, of course, we've had many of them on the Cube. It is not just an honorific. It means you've done the work, you've been with IBM for more years than we'll mention on camera. >> (chuckles loudly) >> I did protect you there. But, Bala, we had you on the program a year ago, I think. Give us the update as to what you've been working on and, as we're speaking right now, the IBM research, the key note is going on and I love the connection between what happens at IBM in some of the, you know the pure research, what happens at universities and that funnel of innovation that happens through the company. >> Oh, that's a great question. I'm glad to be back here and it's been a fairly eventful year as you guys know. I worked on our public cloud, we worked with a lot of clients, and we looked at kind of the dynamics of the market, and what is the transition to take advantage of Cloud technologies and there was certain, not just barriers, but certain opportunities in terms of looking at things like private cloud, and you guys have done some really good work on some of the research there. So, private Clouds became a point of focus for me and over the last year, working with a lot of clients the notion of hybrid became really important. And hybrid is not just a Cloud structure it is how you actually build applications on top of it. So, when you look at some of the announcements around things like Watson everywhere it is not driven by just having Watson in different places but the use cases it addresses. So, things like manufacturing where you're bringing more intelligence to the edge, to the manufacturing floor, but you take advantage of big data analytics on the Cloud. How does that work together? How do you address a lot of the technical movements of data, etc. And so that was really the great opportunity and insights that we saw and that drove our multi Cloud and public Cloud strategy. >> You bring up a really good point. I mean, the application is, you know, it's the reason why infrastructure existed, is to run the application and the data's important and I think back 10 years ago, it was like, well, am I going to burst applications? Are they going to stretch between them? And the dialogue has changed quite a bit. It's now with micro services architectures. It's not that my application's spread, it's that pieces of applications could live different places. They can live in a multi Cloud, I sometimes might be splitting it up into geography or time. So, IBM has strong ties, it has lots of applications that deliver, and working in all of these developer micro services environment. Tell us where the work's happening and what you're hearing from users? >> You know, it's a really good question. So, I think we really see three movements here. We accept the fact and the market has validated it in terms of hybrid Cloud, which is, you got pieces running on Prime, you have pieces running on the Edge, you got pieces running on one or more Cloud providers. So the hybrid multi Cloud landscape is really a preferred architecture. But that architecture also brings complexity, and the three dimensions of complexity that I see are one, around programming models and integration. How do all of these components integrate together from a programming perspective? Because you choosing different Clouds for different reasons and how do those capabilities integrate together? The second element is data. You got data moving to different Clouds, you got compute moving to data. How does data governance, how does data integration work? And Rob Thomas talked a lot about some of our different shaders there. The third element is managing the environment from a security perspective, from a compliance perspective, from a configurational consistency perspective, from an upgrade perspective, from an availability and monitoring per... These three dimensions and the amount of work we're doing in that context, not just in terms of the existing portfolio around integration, but when you look at the complexity of micro services, a number of entities, you really start bringing in elements of AI into the discussion. So, how do you enable operations with AI? How do you enable data placement, categorization, governance with AI? So, it is, even thought it might seem like different technologies, I think bringing them together just to solve this problem is perhaps one of the most exciting things that we can provide to the market. >> So, Bala, when it was becoming clear that public Cloud was going to be a force, way back when, people with large estates on Prime started talking about Hybrid, we use that term now, maybe they didn't use it then, but the notion, as Stu was describing, that you'd have some parts of the workload in public, some parts in private, maybe there's bursting. This was long before Edge and the ascendancy of micro services and Docker and Core OS and the like, and then it became pretty obvious to a lot of users, wow, this is really complicated and the use cases just don't warrant the business case. So, these things have changed. We've seen the ascendancy of these other services. You just laid out three complexities, the programming models, the data movement, which is huge, and then, how do you manage all that? So, how are the use cases evolving? Is the business case more compelling now, today, than it was, say 10, 12 years ago? >> Yes, and I think that's a really, really good question because it takes the problem to the next level. The need for Hybrid always existed. It was impractical to look at very, very large complex workloads, transactional needs, to say that there is a one solution fits it all, I can move it somewhere. I think expanding and taking advantage of different Cloud capabilities is much more of a realistic scenario and a more pragmatic, cost effective, and it meets many of the business cases. >> And that's how we got to the 20 percent though-- >> Exactly. >> Which (mumbles) would call a chapter one. >> Yep. So, now we have chapter two. Now, why is chapter two realistic? Your question was very apropos, meaning that there's complexity, and when you open up the aperture to more choices the complexity expands exponentially. What has been really central to it, has been the notion of what degree of consistency can I get across all of these elements? And open source, the emergence of things like containers and Kubernetes, not just from a run time perspective, but from a manageability and orchestration perspective, and giving you a foundation against which the consistency that it can take advantage of, is been the fundamental revolution over the last two years, which has made that intractable problem that we had with multiple choices and the complexity therein to become much more feasible. And so, if you look at our strategy underpinning those three dimensions of programming models and integration, data and management, which are not complexities but realistic needs for enterprises to take things into production. The notion of an underlying open, multi Cloud hybrid platform based on technologies like containers and Kubernetes and orchestrating across that is the fundamental transformation that has happened. And that is the exciting part. If it's open you create an ecosystem, you really address enterprise concerns from how do I build stuff in a consistent way and leverage skills in the market to all the way, how can I manage it to production goals and security goals. I think we are on the cusp of something that can really transform the way enterprises build applications, and that's what Jenny was mentioning when she said that we are very well positioned to take advantage of the Hybrid transformation and the markets behind it. That is the technical underpinnings of why we think we can do it. >> I'm glad you brought up ecosystem because it's vitally important and you've got a few larger companies, I mean wouldn't it be nice if we just say, "Oh, I'll just use one cloud?" well, that's not going to happen. That's not practical. You'd love it to be IBM's cloud, Amazon would love it to be their cloud. It's just not going to happen. So, you have this complexity. Ecosystem is critical. You've only got a few companies that really have the resources to deliver what you described and to attract the ecosystem. So, specifically, can you talk about the ecosystem and how that's evolving, from IBM's perspective? >> So, we're just peeling the onion, and I think we're going through a good progression. When you look at development of an ecosystem, the ability to provide choice to an enterprise, and the foundations on which the ecosystem is built is very critical. Now, if you look at the history of ecosystems it's been built on certain standard programming models, a certain APIs, so, Arvind keeps talking about things like TCPIP was the foundation of why the internet became a platform. So, in a similar vein, when you look at things like Kubernetes, the open standards around it, the ability through all of these orchestration and run time capabilities to create a variety of choice, and the set of choices work together and can be managed together. That is going to create an immense ecos... We are already seeing pieces of it, right? I mean, Kubernetes is becoming a model in which many providers are providing the same component across different clouds. You see the the adaption of Kubernetes across different clouds. So, rather than looking at an individual part of the ecosystem, it is how can we create a broad ecosystem based on open standards, open capabilities, interoperable standards, whether they are formal standards or they are de facto standards. That is what is exciting about this environment. >> And you're essentially saying that Kubernetes is sort of that analog to old reliable TCPIP here, or is that-- >> Yes, to a certain extent. I mean, I think if I combine TCPIP, HTTP, DNS, how things work together, how things can be managed together, you're moving up to the next level of coherent standards across every provider. And that set of standards, the things that made the internet work, Kubernetes makes applications work. So, networks work together, now applications work together and data works together, which is really nice. >> That a rat hole, Stu, but those are largely government funded standards, which, after a while, dried up because people said, "Okay, hey, we're there," and now you got open source as the sort of new-- >> Open source is the engine for innovation, and I think it's a circuitous way to get to that pithy phrase that says, "Open source is the engine of innovation." but that is really the progressive logic that gets you to the fact that it's important. So, Bala, if we have a solid foundational layer one of the things, if I think back in my career 10 years or even 20 years, things like automation and intelligence in my environment, we've been talking about it for a long time. Can you explain why now, 2019 is different and how some of these are actually coming to reality more than some of the efforts we've done in the past? >> That's a great point because there are two interesting trends that are happening. One of them is, the ability to build intelligent systems at scale is being enabled by the cloud. You have the emergence of standard platforms. Now it becomes an application game, which is how can I leverage the scale, the availability and the models of innovation to solve really tricky problems? Whether it is supply chains that are globally distributed or enterprises that need survivability in different ways, all the way from the Clouds to the Edge, what other new architecture is possible? But this distribution's also caused complexity, and when you have complexity you have to bring some of these new technologies into play, like AI and so on and so forth, and so, the combination of these three events, Cloud, the emergence of open standards that span multiple Clouds, and the complexity it creates, but the answer's that complexity that also have emerged, to me, is a very critical point for innovation. I think the landscape is going to look completely different going forward. >> And I don't think you had the business case for automation, right? Do you remember people were afraid of automation. It's like, "Well, why should we really do this? "We can handle this manually," but today, with digital transformation, data, machine intelligence and the Cloud you can actually make a significant business case to transform your business and drive competitive advantage that you couldn't make 20 years ago. >> You have no choice but to look at automation-- >> I think that. >> Because the scale and that everything's there. >> And go back to the notion of micro services. You're taking something that you could fence and you could apply certain prescriptive measures to keep it under control, now you have micro services, you have SAS systems, you have data that is being dispersed, you have computing that's being dispersed. The only way to take advantage of that agility is to create a different level of being able to understand the systems, secure the systems, and that is going to be driven by new technologies, completely new technologies. >> Alright, so, Bala, you mentioned one of my favorite words, innovation, so what are you seeing in the cloud, both from IBM, from your customers, from your partners, where is that incubation for some of those next trends, you and I, if we were prepped from this, thinking about Bell Lev back in the day or the space race, where do we get those ancillary innovations that help transform industries? How will Cloud impact that? >> I think there's two interesting questions there. One is how will cloud impact innovation, but more importantly, how will innovation impact cloud? Right, and both of these directions are important. So, Cloud really gives you the ability to Cloud, and, again I look at Cloud as, kind of in quotes "Cloud" because it includes a variety of easy access to resources, the open source innovation, the ecosystem that gets built, all of them are drivers of innovation. And it gives a way to easily exploit that innovation. I see that as the fundamental value of Cloud. Now, the interesting part is there's a bunch of other innovations, whether you look at the Debater from Watson, or you look at quantum technologies, you look at some of the Watson capabilities around conversation. How do those start transforming existing processes? So, when you look at, for example, to me one of the exciting things about Debater is when you can process incredible amounts of information, not only to provide insight but to provide rational insights and rationalizable insights. It is a tremendous innovation. Can that be applied to topics like why is my network having a problem? And can you actually debate with a system to isolate the problem? The amount of possibilities, when you look at those, how they transform, how you run your Clouds, how you run applications in the Cloud, how you work across the ecosystem, I think there's a tremendous amount of potential. And I think obviously, with things like quantum solving a different class of problems, making it easily accessible, solving different kinds of security issues, the potential is... The accessibility to innovation, with the innovation, and how it impacts the foundation that delivers that innovation. I think there's a great marriage right there. >> Bala, I want to give you the final word, lots going on here at IBM, we'd seen a year ago, we were five or six different shows pulled together, we're here at the renovated Moscone Center, thousands of people walking around, going to so many different sessions, diversity. Give us a key take away that you want people to have when they walk away from IBM Think 2019. >> So, to me, the two key take aways are one, your observation that everything is coming together is really symptomatic of the change in IBM. We are bringing things together to address complexity, make complexity simple for our clients, to bring innovation to our clients. So that's number one. And that has to be done in an open, in an ecosystem across, not just providers, but across a whole, not only a partnership but a resource ecosystem, a open source ecosystem, and the drivers of innovation that we are participating in and how we are going to influence that is something that I look forward to as well. So that's the combination. >> And it's got to be done through code. I mean, it can't just be services and I know IBM knows this, right? >> Oh, yes. >> It's built this company, this recent chapter on top of services, but that's a huge opportunity for IBM, to take its deep industry expertise, codify it through software and code, and deliver on that vision. This is an enormous opportunity. >> Exactly, and the opportunities for code are great because now it's really transforming what new code, what is the potential of code in this ecosystem. >> Well, Bala, really appreciate you coming back, sharing your body of effort that's happening to help pull together and help simplify this multi hybrid Cloud environment. >> Great, thank you very much, guys. >> Great to have you again. >> Thanks. We're gonna be talking about developers in this segment. I'm Stu Miniman and my cohost is Joep Piscaer. Happy to welcome to the program two first time guests, Bala Kuchibhotla is the General Manager of Nutanix Era, and sitting next to him is Greg Muscarella who recently joined Nutanix, is Vice President of Products at Nutanix. Both of you been up on stage, Greg was talking about Carbon and cloud native, and of course Era is the databases of service. Gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us. >> Thank you, thank you. >> Good to be here. >> Alright, so look, developers. You know, we were thinking back, you know, I love the old meme, developers, developers, developers! Balmer had it right, and style might not have been there. Microsoft, company that does quite well with developers. You know, my background is in the enterprise space. I'm an infrastructure guy that goes to cloud, and the struggle I've had a little bit is, you know, developers really work from the application down. It's like that's where they live, and as an infrastructure guy, it's a little uncomfortable for me. So maybe to set that stage, because you know I look at Nutanix, you know, at it's core, infrastructure's a big piece of it, but its distributed architectures, it's built from the architecture from like really the hyper-scale type of environments. So help connect the dots as to where Nutanix plays with the developers, and then we'll get into your products and everything else after. Bala, you want to start? >> Cool, okay. So as you know, Nutanix is definitely addressing the IT ops market. We cannot simply its storage, compute, networking, and build the infrastructure as service. Obviously if you look at the private cloud, the IT operators are becoming the cloud operators and then giving them to the developers. We are basically trying to build a cloud for IT operators so they can present the cloud to developer. Now that we have this infrastructure pretty much there for quite some time, we're not expanding the services to other things, the platform, the platform as service. Now going back to the developer community, you will have the same kind of cloud-like consumption. That these cloud operators, the IT operators are providing the cloud for you. US developers get the same kind of public cloud consumption. They lack ability, that the ability you are trying to do, easy tools, (mumbling), and S3s, that kind of stuff, EBS, you have the same kind of APS for our Nutanix that you can spin up a VM, spin up a database, spin up a storage and then do what you want to do kind of stuff. So that's the natural journey for that kind of stuff. >> Yeah, Greg? >> Yeah, I have to agree. Look, the world has changed quite a bit for developers, and it's gotten a lot better. If you look at the tooling and what you can now do on your laptop and spinning up what would be a pretty complex environment from a three tier application with a robust database, an app tier, anything else you might have on the storage side, spin it up, break it down, and with your CICD pipeline you can have it deployed to production pretty rapidly. So we look at doing is, you know, recreating that experience that the cloud has really brought to those developers and having the same type of tooling for those enterprise-grade applications that are going to be deployed, you know, on that infrastructure that is needed in private data centers. >> So looking at, you know, one of the reasons why developers love cloud services so much, it's easy for them. They can just consume it, it's very low friction. They don't even really, you know, need to go through a purchasing process, other than credit card maybe paid for themselves in the beginning. So you know, low friction is really the key word here. So I'm wondering, you know, looking at the Nutanix, the IT ops perspective, how are you kinda bring that low friction into the developer world? >> Yeah, so I'll take the question. So essentially what I am seeing is the world in the enterprise world is very fragmented. People doing silos kind of stuff. As you rightly said, developers really want to be liberated from all this bureaucracy, right? So they really need a service kind of world where they can go click on it, they get their compute kind of stuff. There's a pressure on the IT ops to give that experience, otherwise people will flee to public a lot. As simple as that, right? So to me, the way I see is the IT ops, the DB ops, the traditional DB ops inner ring, they are understanding the need that, hey well, we gotta be service-ified. We want to provide that kind of service-like interface to our teams who are consuming that kinda stuff. So this software, Nutanix as the enterprise cloud software, lets them create their own private cloud and then give those services to the developers kinda stuff. So it's a natural transition as a company for us. We got to start from the cloud operators, now we're exposing the cloud services from the cloud operators to the cloud consumers. Essentially the developers. >> Greg, up on stage you talked about cloud native, and your premise is that cloud native is a term for a methodology, not necessarily that it's born in the cloud. Maybe help explain that a little bit, and you know, we think Nutanix is mostly in data centers today, so, you know, why isn't this just saying, "No, no, no, we can be cloud native, too." >> Fair point, and I think we're not alone in that as well, in being an enterprise infrastructure company that was looking at enabling cloud native applications, our cloud native architecture within the private data center Say look, really it's a form of doing distributed computing, right, and that's the core to it, right? So you have a stateless, ephemeral infrastructure. You're not upgrading things, you know, you're blowing it away and rebuilding it. There's some core things like that, that will move across whether it be in the cloud or on prem. And of course you need tooling for that, right, 'cause that's not the methodology most enterprise developers or operators are really going through, right, so everything's pets, not much cattle. We're really trying to change that quite a bit, and that's both enabling technology but it's also the practices that people will deploy. And we're seeing is, it's not so much us trying to sell this it's more like hey, we're used to this in the cloud, why can't we do this on prem in our private data center where we have all of our data, and the other services that we need to interact with, like, that's where the demand's really coming from. So it's that mass of data they want to interact with with the type of architecture that they've gotten used to for rapid development and deployment. >> So one other thing, you mentioned pets versus cattle. One of the things I've been seeing from, you know, an IT ops perspective is you need a good ecosystem of management products around your pets or your cattle to be able to make it cattle, right? If you don't have the tooling, you're gonna do manual interaction, and it's going to become pets. So I'm wondering, you know, in that cloud native space, how are you helping the IT ops to actually make it a cattle experience, and you know, towards management or monitoring, or backup stuff like that? >> So, you know, a lot of that is surrounded around Kubernetes, right, as a center of mass. So it's not just us doing it, it's us pulling in a lot of the support and ecosystem that is being built by the community for that and leveraging that piece. And then we have other things we'll either add onto that as it integrates with our platform and some of the capabilities there, or things that we may do, just again, pure open source. Give you a couple examples of that, so I mentioned Epoch on stage, right, so it's sort of something that brings additional metrics to Prometheus. So in addition to CPU and memory storage consumption, you're actually getting latency and other more business metrics that you might be using to trigger things in Kubernetes, like auto-scaling. I don't necessarily always scale on CPU or memory, maybe it's a customer experience that's difficult to measure The other thing is because we have the storage layer underneath, you know, we look at doing things like, again it's early in Kubernetes, but snapshotting from within Kubernetes. Right, so if we have a CSI provider, why not from within Kubernetes let an application or a container trigger a snapshot. Underneath our storage layer will take that snap and then it becomes an object that's available from within Kubernetes. So there's a whole lot of things happening. >> I just want to add a couple of comments to that. This pets versus cattle is standardization, right, like we're talking about it. In typical, old legacy enterprises there are let's take the example of databases. Like, every application team has their own databases they are trying to pass, they're all trying to do management around it kind of stuff. When we do a couple of servers, like we looked at around 2,400 databases for a typical company, they have 400 different configurations of the software. And so like this is one of the biggest companies that we talking about kind of stuff. With that kind of stuff they cannot manage cloud, obviously. This is not no more a cattle kind of stuff. But how do you bring that kind of standardization, right? That is where the Era as a product is actually coming into this. We are trying to standardize, but when you try to standardize these database environments for on premise enterprise cloud, you have to do it at their terms. What I meant to try to say is when you try to go for public cloud, you have this catalog 11204 pull the node to PSE5, you can only create databases with whatever the software the public cloud guys are doing it. But on premise needs are slightly different. So that is where Nutanix, Era, and this products will come into. We allow to people to create the cloud, and then we allow them to create their own catalog of software that they can standardize. So that is what I call standardization at their customer terms, that's what we're trying. >> And let me add to that, though. It also brings in this convenience, 'cause not only is it coming up with standardize, but we've made it even more convenient, right, because now a developer can go provision their own database, they're gonna get a standard configuration for what that is, and so you made it easier for developers and you're getting something that is more cattle-like. >> Bala, I think you're in a good seat to be able to actually give us a little bit of independent commentary, you know. The movement of databases is one of the hottest topics in the industry. I haven't seen whether Andy Jassy was sparing back with Larry Ellison, you know, at re:Invent this week, but you know, we've been watching the growth of things like Postgres, and lot of these changes, you know, Era sits clearly in that space. So what do you seeing from customers, you know, the modernization of applications is, you know, what I call the long pole in the tent. It's the toughest thing for me to be able to do. I said we usually want to first, you know, you modernize your platform, Nutanix helps with that, public cloud helps with that, and then I can modernize my application. You know, database tends to be, it's the stickiest application that we have in the industry. So what are you seeing? >> Yeah, so there are two class of applications that we see. This space is completely green field We are starting off completely. People love cloud-like experience and cloud native databases that's where the public cloud can kind of try to help them. But if you see 70 to 80% of the money still is with all the traditional apps. You're trying to now cloudify them. The cloud native stack that we talk about, the cloud native database, is not going to the game. Like you really need to think about how do you kind of take these big, giant databases that are there with Oracles, and DBTools, that kind of stuff but give the cloud-like experience, right? So the actually very difficult game for any public cloud, that's why you don't see rack provisioning and a dot list is still not there, or even if JCP natively. Oracle does that but little bit difficult. Data gravity forces people to come to on premise, that's my humble take on this, right. But how do you build, how do you make this gray area I call it a brown field, and convert them into more of a consumer-centered kind of stuff? That's where Era actually tries to play. It has two roles that, if you have existing databases, we turn to kind of convert them into more of a cloud-like databases for you, or if you have a green field then we can get you directly onto the cloud native experience. Or if you're trying to migrate from technology to other technology, definitely we would like to help. These are the three things that we try to do through Era kinda of stuff, yeah. >> So looking forward, you know, we're starting out with databases, you know, making that simple, making that small so that there's less friction in that. So maybe a question for Greg, so what's the future for Nutanix in, you know, enabling other services, other cloud-like services on a Nutanix platform going forward? >> In addition to databases. >> Exactly. >> Yeah, so we're a big proponent of standard APIs, as I talked about, right, so we have that in storage for a long time, that makes things easy with databases. We have a standard client talking to standard database backends. As we see other core building blocks, those are the kind of things that we're gonna want to build and deliver as well. So S3 is a defacto standard for object storage, for instance, so people are following that. You'll get Pub/Sub with Kafka APIs, Druid. There's a whole bunch of things, especially from the Apache project, that have become sort of defacto standards, so really it's like, okay, well which building blocks are needed by developers to build these applications that they want, and how do we really work the the community to establish those as open standards. 'Cause we really want, you know, I talked about the portability quite a bit. So we don't want anyone locked into our stack or anyone else's stack, it's like hey, let's build with the best toolkits, let's use standard, open APIs, and then developers get what they need which is portability, or run the application where they want to run it. So that's our strategy of going forward. >> Into some-I-tab we have easy to equal end, which is AHV, we have EBS equal end, we have our called Acropolis Block Services. We have S3 equal end, which is called Buckets, we have database RDS equal end, we have Era, and now we are going with content as which we call Carbon. So we are trying to kind of look at those critical services for anyone, especially for developers, to say that man, it's all ecosystem, it's not like one piece, single piece It's not this compute, it's not this storage, but it is an ecosystem of services that we need to kind of predict. >> Want to just come back to what we were talking beginning, the relationship with developers. How much of what Nutanix does is really kind of the IT ops that then enables developers, and how much direct developer engagement is it? Like, you know, is there development activity here at the conference going on that we should know about? I know that Nutanix goes to a lot of the developer shows. But maybe if you could give us some commentary on that. >> Yeah, I can start that, it's a path, right? So currently we certainly have the bulk of our interactions are gonna be on the IT operations side, and so it's only through them, because their customers are the developers that we really interact primarily today. But you should see that changing quite a bit, and I think that you'll that with the tools that we're providing directly to developers to interact with you know, through the APIs like they have Era. So for instance, if IT has deployed Era internally, then if I want a database I can go straight to those APIs or command line to grab those things. And you'll see that continuously be a trend as we let developers interact directly with our products. >> Just to give you an example, right, within the company, within Nutanix, we are drinking our own champaign, right. So we are operating a private cloud and we are exposing our APIs to all our developers. Today, if someone wants a database in Nutanix, they go to a control plane and say I want a database. Right, that's the API. How the infrastructure is getting, it's a means to an end for them, right. That's where we are going with our customers, too, hey, here is how you build your private cloud, here is how you expose all your service end points for different services, and your developers just need to enjoy them. And then there's a building aspect of it, that's the nuance that private clouds need to deal with. How do they charge the developers, how do they charge meter, that kind of stuff that people will talk about today. >> You know, I definitely heard when I talked to all the product teams, especially everything in Zai cloud, you know, extensibility with APIs is built into everything you're doing. Bala Chandrasekaran, Dell EMC | Dell EMC: Get Ready For AI
(techno music) >> Hey welcome back everybody, Jeff Frick here with theCUBE. We're in Austin, Texas at the Dell EMC HPC and AI Innovation Lab. As you can see behind me, there's racks and racks and racks of gear, where they build all types of vessel configurations around specific applications, whether its Oracle or S.A.P. And more recently a lot more around artificial intelligence, whether it's machine learning, deep learning, so it's a really cool place to be. We're excited to be here. And our next guest is Bala Chandrasekaran. He is in the technical staff as a systems engineer. Bala, welcome! >> Thank you. >> So how do you like playing with all these toys all day long? >> Oh I love it! >> I mean you guys have literally everything in there. A lot more than just Dell EMC gear, but you've got switches and networking gear-- >> Right. >> Everything. >> And not just the gear, it's also all the software components, it's the deep learning libraries, deep learning models, so a whole bunch of things that we can get to play around with. >> Now that's interesting 'cause it's harder to see the software, right? >> Exactly right. >> The software's pumping through all these machines but you guys do all types of really, optimization and configuration, correct? >> Yes, we try to make it easy for the end customer. And the project that I'm working on, machine learning for Hadoop, we try to make things easy for the data scientists. >> Right, so we got all the Hadoop shows, Hadoop World, Hadoop Summit, Strata, Big Data NYC, Silicone Valley, and the knock on Hadoop is always it's too hard, there aren't enough engineers, I can't get enough people to do it myself. It's a cool open source project, but it's not that easy to do. You guys are really helping people solve that problem. >> Yes and what you're saying is true for the infrastructure guys. Now imagine a data scientist, right? So Hadoop cluster accessing it, securing it, is going to be really tough for them. And they shouldn't be worried about it. Right? They should be focused on data science. So those are some of the things that we try to do for them. >> So what are some of the tips and tricks as you build these systems that throw people off all the time that are relatively simple things to fix? And then what are some of the hard stuff where you guys have really applied your expertise to get over those challenges? >> Let me give you a small example. So this is a new project A.I. we hired data scientists. So I walk the data scientist through the lab. He looked at all he cluster and he pulled me aside and said hey you're not going to ask me to work on these things, right? I have no idea how to do these things. So that kind of gives you a sense of what a data scientist should focus on and what what they shouldn't focus on. So some of the things that we do, and some of the things that are probably difficult for them is all the libraries that are needed to run their project, the conflicts between libraries, the dependencies between them. So one of the things that we do deliver this pre-configured engine that you can readily download into our product and run. So data scientist don't have to worry about what library I should use. >> Right. >> They have to worry about the models and accuracy and whatever data science needs to be done, rather than focusing on the infrastructure. >> So you not only package the hardware and the systems, but you've packaged the software distribution and all the kind of surrounding components of that as well. >> Exactly right. Right. >> So when you have the data scientists here talking about the Hadoop cluster, if they didn't want to talk about the hardware and the software, what were you helping them with? How did you engage with the customers here at the lab? >> So the example that I gave is for the data scientist that we newly hired for our team so we had to set up environments for them. so that was the example, but the same thing applies for a customer as well. So again to help them in solving the problem we tried to package some of the things as part of our product and deliver it to them so it's easy for them to deploy and get started on things. >> Now the other piece that's included and again is not in this room is the services -- >> Right. >> And the support so you guys have a full team of professional services. Once you configure and figure out what the optimum solution is for them then you got a team that can actually go deploy it at their actual site. >> So we have packaged things even for our services. So the services would go to the customer side. They would apply the solution and download and deploy our packages and be able to demonstrate how easy it is to think of them as tutorials if you like. So here are the tutorials. Here's how you run various models. So here's how easy it is for you to get started. So that's what they would train the customer on. So there's not just the deployment piece of it but just packaging things for them so they can show customers how to get started quickly, how everything works and kind of of give a green check mark if you will. >> So what are some of your favorite applications that people are using these things for? Do you get involved in the applications stack on the customer side? What are some of the fun use cases that people use in your technology to solve? >> So for the application my project is about mission learning on Hadoop via packaging Cloudera's CDSW that's Cloudera Data Science Workbench as part of the product. So that allows data science access to the Hadoop cluster and abstracting the complexities of the cluster. So they can access the cluster. They can access the data. They can have security without worrying about all the intricacies of the cluster. In addition to that they can create different projects, have different libraries in different projects. So they don't have to conflict with each other and also they can add users to it. They can work collaboratively. So basically choose to help data scientists, software developers, do their job and not worry about the infrastructure. >> Right. >> They should not be. >> Right great. Well Bala it's pretty exciting place to work. I'm sure you're having a ball. >> Yes I am thank you. >> All right. And we have two days, sorry, three days of live wall-to-wall coverage of IBM Think 2018. My name is Dave Vellante. I'm here with my co-host Peter Burris. Steve Robinson is here; he's the general manager of client technical engagement for IBM, and he's joined by Bala Rajaramen, who's an IBM fellow, expert in Hybrid Cloud. (microphone feedback) Gentlemen, welcome to theCube. >> Oh, good, thanks for having us. Always a pleasure. >> Thank you. >> You're very welcome. So, Steve, let's start with you. >> Sure. >> We were talking off camera about some of the work that we've been doing in what we call true private cloud. You talked about some of the work you've done with BCG, your own internal work. What are you seeing in terms of private cloud and the resurgence of private cloud? >> You know, it's kind of fascinating. You know, over the past, probably two years, we started to see this kind of next definition of private cloud coming about, where most firms had spent a lot of effort on virtualizing their data center, building up these beautiful VMware firms, etc., and then this next level is, how can I start to do more cloud capability back behind the firewall? This notion of CaaS, container as a service, started showing up in RFPs. People wanted to say, hey, can Kubernetes come back as well, could I use private cloud as a parking lot for certain workloads, and could it possibly be the basis for doing true multi-cloud down the road where some of these environments may start landing both on private, multinode private, and even on public as well. So it's been a real resurgence from our side. >> So we made the observation several years ago with our research team that CIOs are realizing they couldn't just put their business into the public cloud. >> Right, right. >> Rather, they wanted the cloud experience and they wanted to bring that experience to their data wherever that lives. >> Exactly. >> So, Bala, what technical challenges does that bring and how do you guys solve them? >> Yeah, it's interesting because, I mean, when you look at cloud, it's about what makes something a cloud. And I think the two things that CIOs are struggling with, which is why public cloud was an attractor initially, was that easy self-service. I can get to things quickly from the business perspective, and I can manage it very consistently because everything works the same. And I think what Steve alluded to was when you bring the cloud to you, it's not just bringing the capability, but it's bringing the experience. And can people get to it easily? Can businesses be competitive in that environment? Can the operations guy manage that environment like they would manage something at a cloud scale? And that, essentially, was the challenges we had to solve, not just in moving things, but in moving all the right pieces around it so that it was a cloud, yeah. >> So, we talked with you about the whole concept is the cloud experience where the data warrants it. And as you said, it's not just bringing technology in, it's also bringing the entire operating model-- >> That's right. >> Of how the cloud works. IBM is a big company, has always been its first customer. What has IBM been learning as you become more of a cloud-first company, or a cloud-oriented company, and how are you bringing that to your customers? >> Well, definitely I think the key thing we've been doing has been in a, you know, spirit of transformation for the past three years, as well. One of the things we picked up critically when we started the private cloud effort is there's a dimension of having to fit in with what an enterprise has already. They've got a strong system management process in place, they've got ticketing, they've got their plasmas up on the hall showing the up time of their applications. The biggest challenge was when they were moving to public cloud, they were kind of giving that to the public cloud vendors and they were losing visibility in that as well. So part of this, we had to respect them to be able to allow them to see their applications, to be able to fit into their existing environments, and be able to fit into the process. We can't leave that system management team behind. >> And just to add to that, I think when you look at the evolution of things like microservices, you're breaking something that was intrinsically a whole and manageable as a whole, into a bunch of individual pieces. That challenge has always existed when you move from mainframes to distributed, because the management challenge more than anything else. You could build applications quickly, but it's really hard to manage them with microservices across multiple clouds, it's a fascinating exercise. So I think our learnings, to your point, was we have to think about it in a different way. Think about from an app-centric way, not from an infrastructure-centric way. And I think that's critical. >> I want to build on that for a second because Judy talked this morning, and we certainly would agree with the concept of your data as an asset. Are we really thinking apps-centric longer term, or data-centric longer term, and apps-centric is more how do we affect the transition because that's where the value proposition is today? >> Right, and that's where your assets are, right? >> Right. >> And your data becomes an integral part, an entangled part of it. As you split your applications, you're also looking at splitting your data, and how do you manage that? How do you manage where the data is placed? Manage where applications are placed? I think the true cloud value, going back to your question, is how does this multi-cloud universe around placement of data, placement of applications, security models, availability models, how does it all come together? And I think that's the biggest challenge, and I think we are doing some interesting work to address this. >> We almost view it always as kind of two planes at the same time. Where do we optimize the application based off of the performance characteristics, you know, how much compute do we need around it, you know if it's a very sophisticated investment banking, let's get that closer. We've even been running private cloud back on the mainframe, Kubernetes clusters back on the mainframe. But then the whole data story now with regulatory, with GDRP, etc., gives you another layer of complexity. So we almost have to look at what's the app doing, and then what's the data doing at the same time? >> You've kind of called it cloud your way. >> Yeah, right. (laughs) >> You used that statement a while back. And so we could define cloud a lot of different ways. We're talking about our data, you talked about some of your studies, and you show them, actually, the private cloud and the public cloud infrastructure's comparable in size. >> It's pretty close. Pretty close. >> We show private cloud smaller but growing twice as fast, so, okay. >> But we also call it two-prong cloud. >> Yeah, so we maybe have a different definition, but let's talk about the customer definition. >> Of course, yeah. >> A cloud is in the eye of the beholder-- >> Beholder, right, right, right. >> Beholder's the customer. So to me, it's about the business impact. Are they seeing an impact on agility? Is it changing their operating model? Because if it is, then it's going to have a bottom line impact, and if it's not, it's just a lift and shift on prem. What are you seeing in terms of the customers? >> Well, I think it's interesting, though, you used the term lift and shift. That's one of these, I call it an urban myth of cloud. Nothing is a lift and shift. >> Dave: Right. >> I think part of the challenge for us is could we bring some cloud attributes back behind, and what would that do for you? I know Bala mentioned self service. We, you know, some degree of horizontal scalability. We'll never have ultimate scalability like we have in the public cloud, but we can spin up multiple instances and start to manage pieces in a different way. The other area that we looked at that we had never thought about when we did our Bluemix local product, etc., could this be a path also for their middleware coming forward at the same time? Could we take this opportunity to start to containerize WebSphere, MQ, DB2, so that more workloads could move towards the cloud without having to have them be fully replaced and change up all the dependency chains, etc. So that's been a key thing, to pull the gravity of that middleware forward, while you kind of have it back on premise, as well. >> Yeah, absolutely. I think, going back to the lift and shift point, right, I mean, I think the traditional disadvantage of a lift and shift was you're moving your bad with your good, right? >> Right, right. >> And I think what this gives us in approach is how do you actually decouple that? Your applications are your crown jewels. You have invested a lot of effort over many years. What held you back was the processes you put around it that slowed you down. So being able to, to Steve's point, when you bring WebSphere, for example, onto a cloud platform, you minimize the risk, you enhance the value of building your application or moving your applications as is. That's a valuable lift and shift. But what you're not lifting and shifting is all of your processes, all the bureaucracy, all of the more traditional ways of doing things, and that combination, I think, is really the, to pick on your definition, is a true private cloud because it brings a customer-perceived value of, and a customer-perceived values risk. It is cost, and how do you optimize that? You're minimizing the risk, you're giving them a new operating model, a new self-service model, that takes away the bad and keeps the good. And I think that is, to me personally, I think that's a very exciting thing. >> Well one of the things that people always talk about when they talk about cloud is they talk about elasticity. >> Steve: Right. >> Great idea. But we like to talk about plasticity. >> Steve: Yes. >> Which is a different definition. Elasticity is same workload and scale, plasticity is the ability to consume, bring up, new workloads, do a better job of patches and updates. >> Steve: You got it. >> What do you think about that notion? At what point in time does the industry start to focus more on the fact that you can use cloud to fit your business differently? To snap your business into place differently, as a consequence of these services? >> That's a great insight, and it's one that I think most people just don't realize out of the gate that even bringing some of these cloud capabilities and also some of these more advanced container orchestration capabilities to all of their workloads gives them a lot more flexibility. We use a term pet versus cattle. You know, where in the old days, I would stand up, middleware stack, etc., and I would do everything to make sure that thing stood up, it was never impacted, etc. With some of the orchestration that we find in Kubernetes, I can stand up six versions of those. If one ends up getting knocked down, who cares? I can just automatically launch another one right back up. It changes the way how I manage that environment. It gives you more flexibility. It gives you more dynamic capability as to where I actually put individual pieces, even with my own infrastructure as well. So I think this could open a whole new era of how I manage. The plasticity; I like that idea as well. >> Yeah, that's a great word because I think when we started this discussion, I did not define cloud as being elastic for very much the same reason because from a business perspective, elasticity is a lower down function, or more of a second-order function. Being able to consume it easily, not be worried about how it's deployed-- >> It's a value proposition with a cloud guy's term. >> That's right, that's right. >> Exactly. And so plasticity's a much better word because that is a business impacting statement, which is, all to the point, which is I can deploy it. I can remove it. I'm not locked into particular things. I can evolve it very quickly. I think you're absolutely right and I think it's different. >> So speaking of the cloud guys, I got to ask you. So if the cloud guys were here, the public cloud pure plays wheel, they would say, oh, IBM, and we get this all the time with our true private cloud, that's old-guard thinking. >> Sure. >> Okay, so what we're doing is changing the world, what they're doing is trying to put a little, you know, lipstick on virtualization. How would you respond? >> If you look at the workloads that a typical enterprise, now, trust me, if I was building greenfield applications or doing a brand-new start-up with my BC money, etc., boom, if I had the chance, I would put it on public and run right away. A lot of flexibility, etc., with that. But the enterprises that we've worked with, I tend to say that most of the ones where we come in and we evaluate large number of workloads, you know, we just did one with a bank. We evaluated 900 different workloads. 15% met their regulatory and their risk policy and could move to the public cloud. That leaves 85% that are either going to stay in their legacy state, or are not going to start taking advantage of some of the cloud concepts we have. So, yeah, you've got to come back behind. And I think if you look at the public vendors, they're trying desperately to either send hard drives down or send appliances down. They understand they're going to have to extend down so that they can bring more workloads the right direction here. >> Of course. >> Now, we're advising our clients to focus on what's their value proposition, what activities are most important, what data's required to perform those activities. >> Steve: We say right cloud for the right workload. >> Yeah, and the question with data is latency, regulatory, and IP protection. Does that resonate with you guys? >> Yeah, that resonates very well. And I think, to me, we are trying to impose a strategy on a current state of the universe. So I think we are arguing whether public cloud is the right answer, or private cloud is the right answer, based on how we perceive private and public today. I think it's, in the next 10 years, you're not going to be able to tell the distinction. I mean, it's going to be more like a central office model where you have the core switches, you're going to have distributed switches. That is the cloud. And who manages what, how you delegate it, multiple providers, cross-provider billing, it's going to become a fabric. Then I can't tell the difference between what's public and what's private. I mean, I have the boundaries well-defined. And so, I think I view that as the eventual strategy, and I think we are now predicting a future that we are just guessing. >> Does that suggest, Bala, then, that the capabilities of the on-prem services are going to be substantially similar to what you see in the public? Do you guys benchmark yourselves against your IBM cloud brethren and have a little healthy internal competition, or? >> No, it is contextual. So if you take something very complex like weather, where it is gathering data from a whole bunch of sources, it makes almost no sense to have something that's local. But if you look at some of the other services, even things like machine learning and so on and so forth, there are some that make perfect sense on a cloud. There's things that make sense on closer to the data, on premise. But what's going to be more interesting is how they work together. And over time, you're going to see the programming model evolve to eliminate the distinction between what is private and what's public. And you're going to see an operational model evolve with the right delegation and controls that wipes out the distinction. In 10 years, I think we are not going to be having this discussion of private versus public. It is going to be a cloud with private components, with public components, and the ability for, from a business perspective, for a client to manage it in the right way. >> So things like, sorry, Peter, things like functional programming models will be pervasive. >> That's correct. >> And it will be up to the client to choose which, where their data is, essentially, is going to dictate what they use and what-- >> Well, and I think-- >> The business requires. >> We envision today where it's almost done on a dynamic basis, you know, where you're really to the point where I may have a load that's based on CPU, etc., running predominantly in the private cloud. Then we have a bursting scenario, actually be able to pick that container up and dynamically move it up to public as need be. As my risk and compliance rules begin to change, I could dynamically say, the same application, these three we're running here today, let me do a distributed, distribution of those as well. Not heavy lifting. >> Really quickly, so we're going to focus more on how you get value out of your data where the infrastructure's not the issue, and even the applications are less of an issue. One quick question though. >> Steve: Yeah? >> So we talk about, we talk about self-service, we talk about rolling updates, we talk about new maintenance styles, all associated with the cloud. What about metering? What about pay as you go? At what point in time does pay as you go start to really hit private cloud options? >> Sure, sure. >> I think it'll hit it sooner than later, but I think what's going to be interesting is the economics of it. >> Yeah. >> I think there's a supposition that pay as you go is a better model from an economic perspective. Not always. It depends on the duty cycle of your workloads. We are seeing movement where, when the workload is variable, that pay as you go model is, is a better fit. When things get where you can actually understand the application, optimize the application, optimize the infrastructure behind the application, a different model which is-- >> But doesn't it make sense to give the customer options? >> Yes, it does. >> Of course you do. But I think we always talk about clouded option and cloud transformation. There's both a technical piece and there's a cultural piece as well. I had Forrester on stage with me yesterday, and I said, "What is the one thing that "enterprises have to get right with cloud in 2018?" He said, "Procurement." And I can recall a CIO asking me one time if I could sell him compute by the nanosecond. I said, "Can you buy compute by the nanosecond?" And he said, "Touche." (all laughing) They are used to buying in big blocks in certain circumstances. They're used to the enterprise license in certain instances. So that's going to have to show as much change as, you know, we could do fine-grain billing today. Does it match, and does it fit the need? >> All right, we've got to go, but Steve, I want to give you the last word. We really didn't talk much about Cloud Private, which is your sort of branding and your offering. Maybe you could give us a little commercial on that? >> Sure. Yeah, we launched this last year, early November. We did IBM Cloud Private. So what we did is we took a core Kubernetes base, we extended it with some other compute models, you'll see Cloud Foundry in there, you'll see VM's in there as well. We took our middleware, we did a full containerization of it so you'll see a lot of rich stack of our middlewares, and then you see this automation layer's on top of it, our processes, etc., to kind of help you manage that overall environment. It's gone gangbusters. In just two months we had over 150 of our large enterprise clients. We got some of the great ones here with Hertz, MRN, etc., and getting great value out of it already. So we're very positive. Getting a lot of great press off of it, and we got a sales team extremely excited about it as well. >> Okay, Steve, Bala, great discussion as always. Our next guest is Bala Kumaresan, who's the senior vice president and general manager of data security for Informatica, formally in charge of engineering, been in R and D, super technical, knowledgeable. Thanks for spending the time to come on theCUBE, appreciate it. >> Thank you. We get to ask you all the tough questions under the hood. What's in the engine of innovation. >> Absolutely. >> Peter: First question, the innovation engine for Informatica, what is it? Describe it quickly. So, the innovation engine of Informatica is entirely metadata driven. It's a data centric metadata driven engine. We call this concept CLAIRE. (John chuckles) It's EI driven, and in a sense, in order for you to make better decisions, you really need to look at your metadata. You really need to-- One of the most important things in security, which actually, current traditional systems lag behind, is the lack of data centricity, resulting in lack of accuracy. If you really want highest time-to-value, and the ability to respond quickly, you really need to be smart enough. Not only out-of-the-box accuracy, but also a period of time, learn, and look into the inputs that are specific to your ecosystem. Specific to that particular environment, and be able to provide actionable insights. Actionability... Actionability without accuracy is basically disaster. >> One of the big drivers in today's market is some of the penalties around governance. Okay, so, there's um, what do you call, G... >> Peter: Oh, GDRP? >> GDRP >> Bala: GDPR! GDPR. >> GDPR, and then Europe is different than North America, but bottom line is you get penalized. There's a risk management piece around the governance, but that's if you've been hacked, so lets talk about the security is fundamental to governance. They play hand in hand. What bet did you guys make on security, and what should people watching know about what Informatica's doing with respect to security, data security? >> I think, great point. General data protection regulation at Europe, that's a regulation that's actually going to go effective May 2018. It's going to be, like, 4% of your annual revenues are going to be the fines in case for every non-compliance and so on. So, we believe that part of the problem that exists today, with or without GDPR, GDPR is today, tomorrow it could be something else, is that lack of versatility, lack of versatility. The entire traditional data security is all about perimeter. You secure the perimeter, and everybody inside the perimeter is trusted. I was just telling, where trust begins, vulnerability seeps in. (Peter chuckles) So you really need to trust and verify. And, what are you protecting? You're really protecting data, so insights into the data is super critical. Our investment on secular source is centered around the Informatica Metadata Company, and insights into the data, how to you translate that into a security prospective. That is precisely what we have done. So, what kind of data you have? Classify the data. How is it being used, where are all that is present, who the users are. Everything is changing. >> So data is the fundamental centroid for security, because perimeter's gone, right? I mean, you got the cloud. I mean, not gone, but its not the fundamental-- >> It becomes the primary citizen in a security regime. >> Yes, yes. So... >> Well said. >> Absolutely. It doesn't matter where your data is. It could be in your relational databases, it could be in the cloud, it could be in your big data systems. It does not matter. It's all about data. Let me give a couple of examples as to the problems that exist today. Once you are inside the perimeter, and you are an authorized user, you pretty much are a trusted person, and then nobody is monitoring your behavior. Are you still the same person, or has somebody hacked into your account? Or did the person turn into... Did his role shift? None of that is being-- So, basically, two main things we are delivering part of our innovation. Role-based access control. It's not user, user... Identity based access control, it is actually role-based access control. If your role is in a IT, versus if your role is a development organization, You, within a company, could move but your privileges actually should be based on the role. That's number one. The second thing is that, look, you... Let's say you have access to all the sales force, because you are a sales force, you're actually part of our sales team. You typical patterns are that you're look at 10 records, 20 records a day, even though you have access to the million records, right? But, the base line and the behavior changes. They're actually indicate something. So this is part of trust and verify. You trust a person, but you also need to verify. Keep up with the changes, and that's fundamental to the data centric security. >> I want to amplify a piece of that, and tell me if I'm so appropriately. Role based security, I would actually ask, are we going to move to something we might call context based security, where context is what do you do. The role is part of what you do. So it says, what do you do, and who are you, and how are you doing it. So that's number one, and number two is, how does this relate back to some of the metadata initiatives that you guys have, where increasingly, some of the most crucial metadata will be the metadata that's ultimately used to put bounds on how the data gets employed. >> Let me answer that question in three different dimensions. Number one, yes. Absolutely. Role is part of the context. It's not the entire the entire context, but role is part of the context. >> Peter: Correct. >> Any protection, and any access to the protected information needs to be role based. Number two, the data context that we have in our product, where we go and catalog and classify all the data, that is very much used in prioritizing. For example, an alarm that goes on in a school during the school hours versus an alarm that goes on in a junkyard. They're both alarms. Today most of the traditional security actually kind of categorizes them as similar. An alarm went off. But, are they the same? No, they are not. So that's where the second level of the context. The third level of the context is in terms of the real... Basically, third level of the context is actually, what do you need to be in compliance with. What kind of usage is allowed? It's actually nothing to do with that particular usage itself, its actually got to do with a whole bunch of other safeguards that you need to manage. That's where our central policy management comes in the picture. So with these three contexts, the business context, the user context, and the category or the classification of the data context, it is totally-- >> All that has to be part of the security regime. >> Absolutely. That's actually, the metadata that we have, which drives those accurate decisions, accurate decisions for prioritization as well as detection, and the right protection. >> So here's a question, then. Again, I'm going to test this on you. Historically people have separated data, data sec-- metadata, data security. In the future, how do we keep those separate? We have to start seeing how they come together, right? >> I think, fantastic, fantastic question. Our view is that data governments is about... The governance actually has a slice across many dimensions. One of them is the data stewardship, the provenance, and the quality of the data, and so on. The other part is actually about data security governance, in terms of what kind of safeguards the role based access control. Really, what kind of risks that you are entitled to and, how are you managing the risks. So, that's our views. So, when we look at metadata, the metadata is actually driving multiple decisions. One of them is quality. The other one is risk. The other one is protection. So, we see this as a unifier bringing things together. Informatica is uniquely positioned with our Axon, EAC, and Secure@Source products. In fact, one of the things that we are announcing in Informatica World is actually about our GDPR bundle, because GDPR is actually about, as much about data governance as about privacy, and also it is about policy driven data protection. >> Well, privacy, policy, inform. The governance regime. You can't separate. It's not just about compliance, and I'll give you-- I'm going to test one more thing on you. At some point in time, as we think about digital business and the idea that a digital business is defined more by its use of data assets. Otherwise its just a business, and we want to protect our data. We're also worried about how we share our data, and how others share data with us. We want to make sure that we are not inappropriately exploiting somebody else's data because we don't want to create a billion dollar business that fundamentally, upon inspection, was predicated on the misappropriation of somebody else's data. >> Absolutely. You are touching upon the consent, and the consent control, and what kind of validations we have in place to evaluate... This might not be popular. What I'm going to say is not necessarily popular, right? I think it goes back data ethics, as well. I think companies consider customer data, partner data as their asset. They, 20 years, 30 years of how the data's been used, I think the realization is going to sink in. The realization is already sinking in with respect to the ethics, with respect to the trust-- >> John: That it's not their data. >> It's not their asset. >> What's sinking in is it's not their data assets. >> Its not their data. They are, in fact... They are, in fact, obligated. They're, in fact, supposed to use that with care. They're, in fact, accountable for that data. So, while regulations are starting to put those things in place, with GDPR being one and then every other... Geography is going to come up with its own set of modifications similar to that. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for companies to go to that higher order, and really start to think this as, why they are ethical. What is the ethics that they want to put in place, above and beyond what the regulations talk about. I think Informatica is uniquely positioned with our metadata driven strategy, with our metadata cloud engine which is driving solutions across quality, governance, and security as well as constant control over-- Yeah. >> Well let me make one more point on that. It comes back to this fundamental notion of your brand is the promise you're making to the marketplace. What you just described will have more impact on company brands in 10 years, and probably even five years, than the characteristics of the products they sell very often. >> Absolutely. If I'm an investor, I'm thinking about reputation. What is the company's reputation? What kind of pull effect the reputation has towards expanding the business. That is where the ethics, actually, is in higher order of existence. Where, people want to partner with you. People what to do business with you, and I think that's actually where we can be very helpful. I mean, there're already intelligent solutions, use them intelligently. >> Its interesting you bring up data ethics, because I wanted to jump in on that, because if digital transformation, if we believe that its happening, and of course everyone's talking about business transformation, which is the outcome of digital transformation, ethics transforms too, digitally. >> Bala: Digitally, yes. >> So, where is, in your mind, the ethics with data? Is there, I mean there's articles that's thought leadership around it, but, is it actually in use. Do actually people have data ethics in your opinion? Is this something that's talked about but not walked? Your thoughts on that, reactions that-- >> I think it's an evolving concept. So far, companies have been taking advantage of the data. The evolving concept is going to catch on. It is actually catching on. Analysts are actually talking about it. I think we are thinking about it. We are thinking about what we are building is actually kind of going to help customers go there. But I want to also separate it. There is actually something that is at a higher level of existence versus what is really, absolutely necessary and need it today? Policy driven data protection while we are able to standardize the policies across the enterprise, across all your data silos. That is super critical, to get the immediate problem resolved while we can start to build on that's access towards the ethics. >> This economy's a scale. You can't just jump the data ethics and be ethical. You got to, you got to build your way up. Have a trajectory and tract record of foundational-- >> Here's what I say John, and Bala, you know, tell me if you think I'm wrong, but... >> Make sure you say if you think he's wrong. >> Yeah, please do, cause I have been wrong in the past. You said something very interesting. You said, "Yeah, everybody's talking about data, >> Data ethics. or additional business. And that's just it. They're doing it, but they're not doing plan-fully, because we often don't understand exactly what it is, and the process of thinking though the ethics is crutial to informing that planful approach to thinking about digital business. At least, that's my perspective. What do you think about that, Bala? >> I think the versability. The versability at the board level, the versability at the senior exec's level, as to where you stand. What is your risk? What is your compliance scorecard? Do you have a plan in place where there's an informed remediation plan? Did we actually allocate sufficient budget? Its not about budget justification, its actually about did you allocate budget for this risk. Also, do we have systems in place that are continuously assessing and reassessing to basically drive towards risk correction and towards maintaining the compliance. Those are key, and I think that addresses what you are saying, and I think I agree with you. >> So, lets take this very practically. If you look at the industry, you see companies like Apple and Microsoft being very clear about how they're going to use their customer's data. >> John: Facebook? (John laughs) >> You see Facebook and Google being less clear about how they're use your data. You see Amazon right in the middle, and people wondering which way they're going to go. This is a huge issue. Not to talk about it's security level, but just overall business model. This is going to have an enormous impact on a global basis of how we think about digital business and the role data's going to play in creating new shareholder customer value-- >> If data's the new gold, so here's my take on this. Love to get the reaction. If data's the new oil, if data's the new gold, the new heartbeat, whatever metaphor you use. If its the new gold, let's just say its the gold. That's valuable. So, the value will shift to whoever has the data. Someone's going to wake up and say, hey wait a minute. That's my data. And I think you're starting to see that a little bit with Facebook certainly. Less Google because the utility is pretty well intergraded, but at some point the utility value has to be greater than than the value of the data gold, if you will, cause otherwise, I will demand the data back. So I think there's end user, or the primary use of the data, the primary user of data-- >> This is a very coarse view, but I wonder if Uber right now is wondering how they could've used data security different, relative to the 200 million, what ever it is, lawsuit that Waymo's bought against them. So this issue of ethics and the role the data's going to play is going to have enormous implications-- >> John: Love that conversation on the eithics side. >> Yeah, I think actually if you look at the way companies use data, and then the way you lay out in terms of where different companies are, that is actually a spectrum of how you could question them. One is actually how they can help the consumer. That's something that we all love. And then there's an absolute exploitation. >> John And Peter: Yes. And then there is something in the middle, and ethics is actually not about exploitation. Ethics is actually about keeping people informed. Letting them know exactly-- >> John: Transparency. >> Transparency, and-- >> John] There's always an underbelly everywhere. >> Peter: Well, you can a bad ethics. (Bala laughs) >> All those bad actors out there. Okay, we got to wrap it up. I want to get one quick comment from Bala. Obviously, I can't help but jump to blockchain when I start thinking about security. Thoughts on blockchain. How's that going to be relevant, if any. Obviously, supply chain. You're seeing some indications there. Blockchain has a potential mechinism-- >> The blockchain technology is very compelling. It has the integrity. Its basically... One of the things that I've always talked about with my team and in general for prag development is that security has always been in the past, as an afterthought. As something that sits outside, and if you were to go back and design some of the systems that we built in the last 20, 25 years, with so much emphasis on privacy and compliance and security and protecting breach, wouldn't security be built in, part of the design? Part of the code. >> John: The primary (John laughs) >> part of the design. Right? So, very appealing from that point of view. The applicability of blockchains today is mostly around transactional ledgers and... basically transfer of value, and so on. I think one of the, you know-- It also has, it also comes with certain baggage. The blockchain remembers everything. You know, (John laughs) So, let me zero in on... I think everybody's trying to figure out how to actually apply blockchain beyond the traditional, beyond the ledger and so on. I think it's going to have a place. Its going to have a place in... We're already starting to see that some applications where shot-dam contracts like, for example, you're doing a building contract that is a supplier, that is actually a valuer, and it is a project. It exists for a temporary period and it goes away. All of the coordinating parties are coordinating with confidence. They're sharing and colliaberating with confidence. Blockchain actually gives them confidence, because it has-- >> So it's relevant, but it's emmerging. Still at, not, it's early innings-- >> It's relevant. It's emerging. We are very closly looking at it. I think we already have a play there, where one of the main and most important things that blockchains mean is that... Identity. As a unique identity. If you look at some of the old prducts... Customer 360, its all abnout quality of customer data. Data quality for customer data, right? There, perhaps, is a way for us to integrate the blockchain. The other place where we are already looking at is can we consume the information in the blockchain to enhance our metadata? Of course we can. >> Peter: Yeah. (Peter laughs) >> So, those are two low hanging fruits, and of course we'll keep it... We'll stay-- >> We'll have to get you down to our studio in Palo Alto. We'll do a whole segiment on unpacking blockchain. I love blockchain. I think, my personal belief is yeah, there's some low hanging fruit that'll use-cases, but if theirs money to be had in reconfiguring parties working together to create wealth-- I have some crazy thoughts on this, actually. (laughter) So we can not stipulate, because-- >> John: You're definitely coming to Palo-- We're going to go to where you are! >> Did we run out of time, or-- >> John: We're running out of time. I'm still minimum and we're covering Nutanix Is New Era database launch Of course, we had to do instead of conversation with Monica Ambala talking about era to Dato and to dig into it a little bit further. We have some new tennis guests as well as what? One of their close partners. So going across the channel, first of all, happy to welcome to the program. Uh, the new kid UPA she is the gsc strategy and go to market with Nutanix sitting in the middle chair we have on and Akila whose product marketing leader with Nutanix and then from HCL happy to welcome to the program Tasing who is the senior vice president with HCL Technologies. I mentioned all three of you. Thank you so much for joining us. >>Glad to be here, >>right? Uh they knew What? Why don't we start with you? You handle the relationship between Nutanix and HCL. As I said, some exciting announcements database services help us understand how Ah partner like HCL takes the technology and what will help bring it to market. >>Let me start by thanking used to for this opportunity. Head Seal is a very significant partner for Nutanix and we've had this partnership for a long time now. It's one of our long standing partnership. Over the five years we've closed over 100 accounts across all three theaters. Trained professionals both on the Nutanix side on the outside, on built a 3 60 relationships so we can deliver the best experience around solutions to our partners. In the very recent announcement, we're looking to build a database as a service offering. With that CL we want Thio leverage are intelligent technology that allows us to simplify off and increase operating efficiency. Andi Couple it with head seals ability to offer world class services on it. It's a scale to reach the go to market needs needed right. We're very confident that the solution is going to drive significant incremental business for both our companies. >>Excellent taste. We would love to hear from your standpoint. What is it that excites you? We we know HCL knows the data space real well. So I think you've got some customers that air looking to take advantage of some of these new offerings. >>Yeah, So if you look at where the focus has been so far, most of the focus is on taking applications to cloud and moving them from VM two probably containers one of the most. Uh, I won't say, uh, neglected, but the space that needs to change now is the entire database space on. If you look at how customers are managing databases today, they have taken hardware on a KPIX model. They have the operating system and the database licenses on L. A model from the E. M s on. Then they have, ah, teams which are siloed depending upon the database technology that is there in the environment and managing that I think that whole model is has to change, enabling customers to transform Onda accelerate the digital transformation journey on. That is where our offering off database as a service ises very unique because it offers a full stack off services which includes right from hardware and all the way to operations on a completely utility model powered by the Nutanix era. >>Yeah, on it might make sense if you could give us a little bit of a broader context for your users. Some of the data that you have around this offering, >>yeah, you know, attend effect. All the solution, our joint solutions. Our customers, uh, they are trying to deliver the best individual experience, right? That's at the heart of it. What they're trying to do, I'll give you a couple of customer examples. For example, Arbil Bank in India. You know, they deployed their database solutions and applications, and Nutanix got 16 fasters application response. That means like they used to take 180 seconds. Uh, Thio logging into the application. And now it's, uh, 20 seconds, 36 times faster. Another example I could give. I can give many examples, but when this one is really interesting, Delaware Valley community held, you know, at the time of Kobe they went remote. They started working from home and they had medical systems applications. EMR electronic medical record applications and used to take even before they were working from home, is take like 171 seconds to log into medical systems before they could, you know, talk to their patients and look at their, you know, health results and everything and that from 171 seconds, it went to 19 seconds. So these are some of the values that customers seeing when it comes to delivering the individual experience to their customers. >>Yeah, absolutely. We've seen police stage go ahead. >>Yeah, and I just had to What men? Who said that? It's also the ability tohave self service with dynamic provisioning capability that really brings the value toe the to the I T teams and to the application teams who are consuming these services. So we have cases where customers were waiting for about a week, 10 days for the environments to be provisioned to them. And now it's a matter of seconds or minutes where they can have a full fledged environments leading to develop a productivity. And that also really adds the whole acceleration that we just spoke about. >>Yeah, we we've absolutely seen such a transformation in database for the longest time. It was, you know, a database. It didn't change too much. That's what everything run on Now there's a lot of flexibility. Open source is a big piece of what's going on there. I'd like to come back to you and you know, they know. I know you're gonna want to chime in here. You know, HCL doesn't just, you know, take this off the shelf and, you know, resell it, help us understand. You know what is unique about the offering that that HCL brings market? Uh, with with >>Nutanix. Right. So one is that we have standardized reference architectures, which really x ray the time to consume the offering. We're not building anything from from from ground up. Three Nutanix is also part off our velocity framework, which helps customers deploy software defined infrastructure as the as a foundation element for their for their private cloud. Now, what is unique is also the ability toe not only provide operations on different databases that are there in the environment on a completely utility model, but also help customers, you know, move to cloud and adopt the database clouded of databases and then manage the whole show seamlessly using using the BP platform and that really, you know, if you look at the trend that is there, there's a short term impact on the long term impact off transformation. In the short term, there's hardly an industry which is not touched by by covert on most of our customers are either looking at cost or initiatives or are looking at ah platform, which will help them in a weight or find new business model to to sail through. In the long term, we strongly believe that the customers will be in a hybrid, multi cloud world where they will still have the heritage environments. The article and the Sequels on a lot off cloud native data business will also start coming into picture. How do you manage is also seamlessly is what will be the next challenge for for most of the customers. And that's where we come in, along with Nutanix, to solve the problem. >>Well, very simply put right, we have different categories of customers. One off them refers to buy the ingredients and make their own meal on some really large customers, and global customers prefer to buy the meal and pay for it on on as consumer basis. What that seal does is take era, which simplifies a lot of the database operations, puts it into a full stack solution and gives the customer the full stack solution. Everything from assessing that environment to deploying, to making sure that the designers I accurate and then of course, the day and through they do through and, uh, uh, environment, right. So literally the customer can Now I'll offload any off their data center, our database management and operation to hit cl from my perspective on do rest assured, run their projects toe, etc. Also, excel becomes their extended arm, the beauty off. It is also like working with dead C. Elgar now able to offer the entire solution on a pay as you go model or pay as you use model, which is very relevant to the existing times where everybody is trying to cut their Catholics costs and and optimized on the utilization. >>Well, great. Great to hear about that. You've mentioned that this partnership has been for many years, so I know you've got plenty of joint customers. Anything specifically could share about these new offerings on. And I know you've got a lot of the customer stories there. Maybe you could start would look love, freedom. The rest of you, >>Thio, I'll start what? You know, Like I talked about a couple of customers. But recently I'm really excited about. And this is something that to be a announcing today as well. Ah, study that we did with Forrester called Forrester T I study, which is what it means total economic impact study. And what they do is that they topped with customers, uh, interviewed them, four of them. And based on their experience, uh, you know what? They observe what kind of benefit they got, what challenges they had, what was cause they built an economic model. And based on that economic model, they found that customers were rolled all off them were able to get their payback within six months. So Bala talked about it earlier that, you know, like all the great experience, all the great value that we offer, but at a very, very good cost. So the six less than six months payback was used and the r y for the three years period and again, this is ah, model based on four enterprises was 2 91 100% almost like three times mawr. So whatever they invested, I think on an average day the cost was 2.3 million and the benefit was nine million or so so huge value customers have observed already. And with this new launch, I believe that it will just go to the next level. All the things about provisioning copy data saving that the stories All of that adds to the R Y that I'm talking about and our joint customers with SCL or otherwise, who are customers who are running their applications, their business critical applications on you can X Platform managed by era an era is built out off a bunch off best practices that over time that we have done. I talked about custom performance earlier, and a lot of the performance comes from fine tuning. You do that like a lot of tea tuning and to get to the right kind of performance. Uh, era comes with that, those best practices. So when your provisioning an application, you know, it gives you you don't have to do all that tuning. So that's the value customers are experiencing. And I'm really excited about the joint customers what they could experience and benefit out off the new expanded solution. >>Great Tiger. Any other customer examples that you'd like to share? >>Well, we got a lot of go ahead page, >>but it's okay. >>No, I was just saying that we've had a lot of success with Head cl across the board anywhere from data center organization Thio v. D. I. We had a very large manufacturing company in America where we partner together. They have a huge number of sub brands. We partnered together to go evaluate that environment and then also even that is a B infrastructure with databases. It's a relatively new offering we're announcing today. But we're leveraging the expertise that SCL has in the market, uh, to go to go deeper into that market with cl eso. I will leave it to page to give us the NCL examples. >>So one thing that is happening is the very definition off infrastructure and infrastructure operation itself is changing. So a couple of years ago, for many of our customers, it was about operating system management, hardware management, network management and all the use. Uh, the concept that you're going back to customer is about platform operations. That means everything to do with application operations. Downward is going to be done by one integrated unit. Now, with Nutanix, we can we can really bring a lot of change, and we're bringing a lot of change in our in the operations model for for lot off a large customers where earlier you had siloed teams around Compute network storage, offering system databases both at the Level two and level three, and you had a level one, which was basically command center. Now, we're saying is that with the artificial intelligence and machine learning driven OBS, you can practically eliminate the need for command center on the level two layer because the platform enables you toe be multi skilled. You need not have siloed engineers looking after databases separately on and operating system separately. You can have the same sort of people who are cross train, multi skilled, looking at the entire state. On at level three. You may want to keep people who are deep into databases as a separate team, then from people who are managing the Nutanix platform, which is a combination off compute storage and and and and the SCN. So that's the change that we're bringing. A lot of our customers were going about infrastructure, platform modernization, Azaz, the public cloud or hybrid clubs. >>Well, I think you're really articulated well, that modernization journey we've seen so many companies going through. The thing I've been saying with Nutanix for years is modernize the platform, then you can modernize everything that runs on top of it. All the applications on, of course, did databases a major piece of this on. And that brings up a point I want to get your take on. We haven't talked about developers, you know, the DEV ops trend. Something we've seen, you know, huge growth for for a number of years. So what >>does this >>mean from developers? This something that you know, mostly the infrastructure team's gonna handle. Or how do you bridge that gap to the people that really are? You know, building and building and building the APS. >>Yeah. And in this digital world, you know the cycle time from idea to production. Everyone is trying to reduce that. What that means is that things are moving left. People are trying to develop and test early in the life cycle when it is easy to find a problem and easy to and cheaper to fix. Right. So for that, you need a your application environment, your application and database available to test and develop in, uh, you know, like in volume. And that's where databases the service era helps developers and develops professionals to provision in the whole infrastructure for testing and involvement in hundreds and thousands of them at the same time without, you know, worrying about the storage back back and how much story it is consuming. So it is. It helps developers to to really expedite their development and testing left lifecycle ultimately resulting in excellent and unique experience. >>Yeah, absolutely way no. Of just moving faster. Being able to respond to the business so critically important. Uh, they know Tasia wanna let you have the final word Talk about the partnership and what we should expect, you know, in the coming months and quarters. >>So, uh, I'll go first. And then we can come in, uh, a salon and Nutanix you to share the same values where we believe that we need to provide a very innovative platform for our customers to accelerate their digital transformation journey. No matter what it is right, we share common values and way have a 3 60 degree relationship. It started way back in 2015 and we have come a long way since then. A C also does engineering services for for Nutanix, and we have closed about 850 r plus people who has prayed and 35 on Nutanix Solutions. Providing manage services to our customers on Nutanix is also part off our software defined infrastructure portfolio on we're taking it to our customers as part of our entire infrastructure platform modernization that, I suppose talk about earlier three recent announcement off Nutanix clusters running on AWS. I think it's a significant announcement and it will provide a lot off options to our customers. And as an S, I, uh, you know, we are able to bring a lot of value to our customers. We're looking at adopting cloud the database as a service offering. I think we're very excited about it. I I think we have about 300 plus customers, and many of them are still stuck with the way they are managing databases the old way. And we can bring in a lot of value to those customers, whether it is about reducing cars or increasing agility or helping them modern ice, The platform one ended up hybrid multi club >>business critical lapse are growing, are still growing, and data is pretty much gold in these scenarios, right? It's it's doubling every two years, if not more with every transaction being remote today with zeal. We actually look forward to addressing that market and optimizing the environment for our customers. Both of our companies believe in partnership crossed and the customer first mindset. And when you have that belief, trust comes with delivering the best experience to our customers. Help that I got cloud in the brain. Gentlemen, welcome to the Cube. Thank you much for coming on, Luis. Let's start with you. Uh, a little bit about Cardinal Health. What you guys air are all about. Tell us about the business. Sure. >> Uh, Cardinal Health is a global supply chain medical products services company. We service hospitals, pharmacies throughout the world. We're drivers are delivering cost effective solutions to our two patients right throughout the world. >> Awesome. We're gonna get into that, Anthony, you've been in the Cube a couple times here almost a year since we were last at this show. it's grown quite a bit. Good thing Mosconi is new and improved. He's got all these new customers here. Give us the update. On what? Look back a year, What's transpired? One of the highlights for you. >> Open it up. You know, we've achieved a tremendous amount. I mean, you know, we were a Google partner of the year, which was quite nice. Wasn't even award for the hard work? You know, we have a very special relationship with Google. We actually engineer directly into the Google console, our services that their products that are sold by Google, which gives us a very unique value proposition. We just keep adding, you know, we have more services and we had more regions on. We continue to sort of differentiate the basic services that that customers are now using for secondary workloads and increasingly very large primary work. Look all >> right, we're going to get into it and learn more about the partnership. But but thinking about what's going on, a cardinal health question for you, Lewis is one of the drivers in your business that are affecting your technology strategy and how you're dealing with those. >> Sure, there's a few things on. I'm sure this is the same in many industries, right? We're facing cost pressures. We need to deliver solutions at a lower cost than we have been in the past. We need to move faster. We need to have agility to be able to respond to changes in the market place. So on Prem doesn't didn't give us a lot of that flexibility to turn those lovers in any of those three areas that those three things have really driven our push into the cloud. All >> right, Louis, let let's dig into that a little bit. You could kind of Do you still have on Prem as part of your solution way? Still have >> some eso We've been working over the past two years to my great work loads out of our data center into the cloud. We're about eighty percent of the way there. There's gonna be some workloads. I Siri's doesn't run in the cloud. Very well. You know, we've got Cem >> Way. Were just joking about that earlier today. Yes, yes, yes. Lots of things. But in the back corner somewhere, I've got that icier running or the day working on that Anthony way. >> Blessed with blessed. You know, this is a customer of ours, and way enabled him to run some, you know, pretty heavy on Prem workloads that required NFS can now run, you know, production on Google clouds. So >> yeah, and you're basically trying to make that experience Seamus Wright A cz muchas. You can wait. Talk about that. That partnership with Google, What are the challenges that you guys are tryingto tackle? I'm just going to refer to your >> question. I mean, you know, what we see is that there's a sort of a pivot with the clouds that traditional i t people thought horizontally and they try and sort of you had a storage team and you had a security team and you had a networking team in the cloud. It's sort of pivots ninety degrees, and you have people who don't work clothes on the workload. People are experts in every single thing, and so they go to the cloud, assuming that the cloud itself will take care of a lot of that problem for So we worked with Google and we built a service. We didn't We didn't build it for a storage guy tow, configure. And you know it undo the bolts and nuts way built it like dial tone. That there is. The NFS is always on in Google Cloud and you come and provisioned an end point and you just tell us how much capacity you want and how much performance. And that's it. It takes about eight seconds to establish a volume in Ghoul Cloud that may take through, you know, trouble tickets, and I t capital purchases about six months to do. >> Yeah, Anthony. Actually, one of my favorite interviews last year is I talked to Dave Hits at your event, and he talked about when we first started building it. We build something that storage people would love, and you shot him down and said, No, no, no, This needs to be a cloud first Clouds absolution. Louis, I want to poke at you. You actually said Price is a main driver for cloud agility. Absolutely. But bring this inside a little bit. I know you're speaking at the show a year. You know, people always say, it's like, Hey, you know, cloud isn't easy. Is it cheap? Well, you know, Devil's in the details there. So would love to hear your experience there. And you know how you know less expensive translates in your world? Sure. >> So when we were looking for something, we tried to get away from Nasim. We're moving to the cloud and we just can't do it right There's way have a lot of cots, applications, a lot of processes that you just have to have known as right and we're looking for something Is Anthony described that with a click of a button are developers Khun spin up their own storage. The price point was lower than then. Frankly, you could get just provisioning the type of disk that you need in the cloud fur, and that was acceptable for most of our workloads. The the the ability to tear right. There's through three classes of storage and in the cloud volume services. Most of our workloads are running on the standard tear, but we've got some workloads where they've got higher performance and we provisioned them right on the standard. And when that you're doing, they're testing like, hey, we need a little bit more with a click of a button there at a higher tier of storage. No downtime, no restarting, no moving storage. It's I just worked. So the cost, the agility were getting all of that out of the solution to >> manage those laces, that sort of, ah, sort of automated way or you sort of monitoring things. And what's the process for for managing, which slays the slaves on the different tiers of storage. If >> we provide him, Yeah, we're not. We're not money for s. >> So it's all automated. >> Run it. And we stand by guarantees throughput guarantees on we take the pain away. You know, I always like to say, you know, what people want to do in the public cloud is innovate, not administrator. And generally, you know. So when when people say clouds cheaper, it's because I think they've decided that they're better use of the dollar is in application development, data science, and then they can retire people and put application developers into the business. So what ghoul does, I think incredibly well as it has infrastructure to remove the sort of the legacy barrier and the traditional stuff. And then it has this wonderful new innovation that, you know, maybe a few companies in the world could decide could use it. But most people couldn't afford to put TP use or GP use in their data center, so they know he was really two very strong Valley proposition. >> And maybe what they're saying is when they say the cloud is cheaper, maybe is better are why I'm spending money elsewhere. That's give me a better return. >> I do things that make you different. Not the same, right, >> right, right. So storage strategy. I mean, I'm sure there should be such a thing anymore. Work illustrated back in the day when used to work A DMC was II by AMC for Block Net out for file Things have changed in terms of how you run a strategy. Think about your business. So what is your strategy when you think about infrastructure and storage and workloads? >> So we really don't want to have to focus on an infrastructure strategy, right? Right now we're mostly running traditional workloads in the cloud running on PM's. We're working towards getting a lot of work loads into geeky, using that service and in Google Cloud platform, >> so can you just step back for a second? How do you end up on Google? Why'd you choose them versus some of the alternative out there. >> So we started our cloud journey a couple of years ago. Started out with really the main cloud player in town, like most people have. Um, and about a year in, not all of our needs were being met. You know, they that company entered decided to enter our business segment. S O, you know, starts asking some questions. People start asking some questions there. So that prompted us to do an r f p to try to see technologically really, were we on the right cloud cloud platform? And we compared the top three cloud providers and ended up on GP from a technological decision, not just a business decision. It gave us the ability to have a top level organization where we could provisioned projects to application teams. They could work autonomously within those projects, but we still had a shared VPC, a shared network where we could put Enterprise Guard rails in place to protect the company. >> Dominic Price was on earlier with Google and he was saying some nice things about net happened. I'd like to hear your perspective is why Ned App What's unique about Nana. What's so special about net app in the cloud. Sure, a few of the >> things that Anthony talked about were really differentiators for us. We didn't have to go sign a Pio with another company, and we didn't need to commit to a certain amount of storage. We didn't need to build our own infrastructure. Even in the cloud, the service was just there. You do a little bit of up front, set up to connect your networking and weaken prevision storage whenever we want. We can change the speed the through. Put that we're getting on that storage at any point in time. We congrats. That storage with no downtime. Those are all things that were really different and other solutions that were out there. >> I mean, it's interesting infrastructure. Tio was really still even in a cloud. It's kind of like a bunch of Lego blocks on what we always said it was. You know, people want to buy the pirate ship, you know, they don't want to, like, have to dig in all these bins. And so we sort of said, Let's build storage, Kind of like a pirate ship that you just know that the end result is a pirate ship and I don't have to understand how to pick a ll Those pieces. Someone's done that for me. So, you know, we're really trying, Teo. I was I'd say we like to create easy buns. You know, people just hit the easy button and go. Someone else is going to make sure it's there. Someone else is going to make sure it performs. I am just a consumer off it, >> Anthony Wave talkto you and Ned app. You play across all the major cloud providers out there and you've got opinion when it comes to Kerber Netease, Help! Help! Help! Give us the you know where what you think about what you've heard this weekend. Google. You know, I think how they differentiate themselves in the market. >> You know, I think it's great, you know, that Google, I think open source community. So I think that was a ninja stry changing event. And, you know, I think community's really starts to redefine application development. I think portability is obviously a big thing with it, But But for an application, developer of the V. M. Was something that somebody added afterwards, and it was sort of like, Oh, no way overboard infrastructure. So now we'Ll virtual eyes it But the cost of virtual izing things was so expensive, you know, you put a no s in a V m and communities was, was built and was sort of attracted to the developer. And so the developers are coding and re factoring, and I just You just look around now and you just see the ground swell on Cuban cnc f is here, and the contributions that were being made to communities are astonishing. It's it's reached a scale way bigger than Lennox. The amount of innovation that's going into cos I think is unstoppable. Now it's it's going to be the standard if it isn't already >> Well, Louis, I'd love you to expand. You said it sounded like you moved to the cloud first, but now you're going down that application modernization, you know, how does Cooper Netease fit into that? And what what other pieces? Because it's changing the applications and get me the long pole in the tent and modernization. So >> cardinal took the approach of we need to get everything into the cloud. And then we can begin modernizing our applications because if we tried to modernize everything up front, would take us ten to fifteen years to get to the cloud, and we couldn't afford to do that. So lifting and shifting machines was about seventy eighty percent of our migration to the cloud. What we're looking at now is modern, modernizing some of her applications R E commerce solution will be will be running on Cooper. Nettie is very shortly on DH will be taking other workloads there in the future. That's definitely the next step. The next evolution >> Okuda Cloud or multi Cloud? That is the question way >> are multi cloud. There are, you know, certain needs that can only be met in certain clouds, right? So Google Cloud is our primary cloud provider. But we're also also using Amazon for specific >> workloads and used net up across those clouds erect. Okay, so is that What's that like? Is that nap experience across clouds so still coming together? Is it sort of highly similar? What's experience like? >> So it's it's using that app in both solutions is the same. I think there's some stuff that we're looking forward to, that where where things will be tied together a little bit more and >> that brings me to the road map Question. That's Please get your best people working on that. >> Oh, yeah. No, no. I mean, I So, look, I think storages that sort of wonderful business because, you know, data is heavy, it's hard, it doesn't like to be moved, and it needs to be managed. It's It's the primary asset of your business these days. So So we have we have, you know, we released continuously new features onto the service. So, you know, we've got full S and B nfs support routing an FSB four support routing a backup service. We're integrating NFS into communities, which is a very frequently asked response. A lot of companies developers want to build ST collapse and Block has a real problem when the container failed. NFS doesn't So we're almost seeing a renaissance with communities and NFS So So you know, we just we subscribe to that constant innovation and we'll just continue to build out mohr and more services that that allow I think cloud customers to, as I said, to sort of spend their time innovating while we take care of the administration for them >> two thousand six to floor. And I wrote a manifesto on storage is a service. Yeah, I didn't know it. Take this long, but I'm glad you got there. Last question, Lewis. Cool stuff. You working on fun projects? What's floating your boat these days? >> My time these days is, uh, the cloud. As I said, we went to the cloud for cost for cost savings. You can spend more money than you anticipate in the cloud. I know it's a shocker. So that's one of the things that I'm focusing our efforts on right now is making sure that way. Keep those costs under control. Still deliver the speed and agility. We are in Las Vegas, the Mandalay Bay, for IBM Think. Six shows are coming into one packed house. We have two great guests here, Brian Wallace, who's the CTO of Insurance for DXC technologies, and we have, Bala, The Bala, but goes by Bala, banking and capital markets CTO for DXC technologies. Guys, welcome to the cube. Thanks for joining us. >> Thank you. >> It's our pleasure, yeah, thanks. >> So, the innovation sandwich, I'm calling it IBM strategy. You've got in the middle, the meat, is data. And the bread is blockchain and AI. Two really fundamental technologies powered by cloud and a variety of other things. Obviously, AI is disrupted, we know what that looks like. Block Chain now emerging as a viable infrastructure enabler that's creating token economics, a lot of cool things, certainly on the banking side, seeing a lot of controversy. Block Chain really is driving it. You guys are out on the front lines. You're doing a lot crowd chats, been following your digital transformation story that you guys have been putting out there. Really you're on this. So, what's the conversations like that you guys are having with block chain and AI; Share? >> Bala: So, let me begin with a couple of quick points on block chain. DXC has done some fantastic work around the world leveraging both the trust capability that block chain brings to bear in financial banking industry use cases, like KYC for instance, institutional KYC in particular, but also, in simplification of entire value chains such as lending. And we're doing very interesting work in lending where not only are we looking at the up-front origination process of lending but also the downstream securitization. Which is where the tokenization of principle and interest payments and those type of things happen. >> John: Energy too? >> Oh yes, absolutely. So there are a number of these creating type use cases that follow into securitization. And with that, we're doing some very interesting work. >> John: Bala, talk about the globalization because one of the things we're seeing in the US a shrinking middle class, but outside the US in emerging markets, a growing middle class. Thanks to mobile technology, thanks to data, thanks to block chain, you're seeing, you know, countries that "hey, we have infrastructure but we don't have the core and modern infrastructure but you throw in a decentralized capability, You've got all these capabilities, and the killer app in all this is money. You're in, that's your vertical. >> Bala: Yes. >> That's your industry. The killer app is money and marketplaces. Your thoughts? >> Bala: I think, the beauty of what these technologies are doing, is for the first time creating financial inclusion to happen and the very first case of where financial inclusion is enabled, is in payments. So, when we open up the banking system predominantly from a payment perspective, which is what things like blockchain and others enable, if we succeed in doing that, then for the first time we've enabled, that's 2 billion people unbanked or underbanked-2 billion. >> John: Yeah. >> Bringing them into this financial system allows for. >> And some people are discriminated against too because they don't have a track record. Banks can't handle some of the things that others are now filling the void with crypto and blockchain. >> Bala: Right, or they can't service them profitably. But for the first time now, you're looking at the economics that cloud, and AI, and blockchain, these technologies bring, not just into banking and capital markets areas but into insurance and I'd love to have my colleague, Brian, talk with the insurance cases are enabled as well. >> John: Brian, insurance- go. >> Yeah, so it's a slightly different dynamic. There it's the, if you think about the fundamental pattern of blockchain it's around eliminating a central or a middle-man or a central, you know, gatekeeper, if you will. And the entire insurance industry is largely made up of middle-men, right? You've got people with risk at one end and you've got sources of capital at the other end and everybody's playing a role between a broker, and a carrier, and a re-insurer. In sort of facilitating that management and that transfer of risk. >> John: So you've got to extract some efficiencies out of that. Business model opportunity. >> So efficiencies, there's a lot of conversations around efficiencies, around automation, but interestingly, it's around the disruptive business model, right? The technology is mildly interesting but it's the new business models that blockchain will enable. >> John: Yeah, I see banking picking up. The early adopter on blockchain but I see, maybe it lagging a bit in insurance but I definitely see some opportunity there. But short term, data is driving insurance because, you know, I don't have a Tesla but my friend has a Tesla. The insurance company will know exactly who is rolling through those stop signs. They know everything that he's doing, All the data is there, so AI becomes really the low hanging fruit for insurance in that industry. Do you agree with that? Comment, reaction? >> Brian: Yeah, and we're just at the beginning, right? Because as you say, data is the asset that we manage. So we have a lot of data in terms of transactional data, the traditional operational data. What we're discovering, and what we're sort of licking our lips over almost is all of this new unstructured data, whether it's sensor data, behavioral data, and you're right, 'cause the challenge that we had around automation and cognitive computing, if you will. We're here at IBM with the Watson tech, was enough data, and the consistency and quality of that data. So we have that now, and we're making tremendous strides around in particular here, with the Watson brand, and the Watson cognitive. >> John: You know, one of the things I wish, was Dan Hutches was here, he's not, he's the CTO in charge. You've guys have been doing all these crowd chats our software that we wrote. That's pretty interesting. I've personally enjoyed all the conversations and give a shout out to Dan and you guys for really great conversation. You guys know what you're talking about. It's clear in the data you guys are taking an outside-in approach and collaborating. But your topics are on target. You're talking about digital transformation kind of holistically, but then you start to dive down into specific use cases. So, Bala, what is the favorite, or the most popular digital disruptive topic that's being discussed within DXC and your clients and in the marketplace? >> So, at the outset, within DXC, as digital transformation takes hold with our customers and we aim to be the premier provider of that enablement, what we've realized ourselves is that we provide a lot of services to our clients across many industries but there are commonalities across what we provide in terms of service delivery. And so it made sense for us to, number one: look at the commonalities and create a platform that was common across industries, across offerings that we bring to the marketplace. That commonality is what we call internally, and externally now, as bionics. And it's a platform that we are bringing forward that for the first time ties together what we are talking about both here at this event but also with our clients. Ties together intelligence, orchestration, and automation which are the fundamental, >> John: It's called bionics? >> Bionics. And internally we call it platform DXC upon which all of our offerings and services are brought to market. >> John: Well there's disruption going on in your business. So, I want to talk about, double-down on that for a second. I'm seeing a trend, certainly in the public sector market where the use cases are well enough defined. So you're seeing automatic code generation becoming a real part of the delivery process. Now, what that's going to do is essentially, think of provisioning and configuration management in cloud. If you could apply actual process code that you've done before in the commonalities, this is going to change the delivery timeframe. So you're looking at essentially auto-provisioning software. Not just like, configuration management resources. No, I'm saying here's a value chain, here's a block chain, here's some AI, just configure it like a LEGO block, push. That could take months to deliver the old way. >> Bala: Right. >> Your thoughts to that? Are you guys on that? Do you guys see that as something that's going to be an opportunity for you? Some companies, I've seen, Global system integrator, is being disrupted by this, cause they don't have this. New SI's, new system integrators, are thinking this way and that's a DevOps mindset. Are you prepared for that, do you see it coming? And what's your answer to that? >> So we saw that coming about 3 and a half plus years ago. And our shift away from being a pure SI began then. And so we are an SI, but we are a service integrator rather than a systems integrator. And we began that trend in our journey, 3 plus years ago. And the reason we began that trend was what you pointed out. Today, infrastructure is delivered as a code. So not even as a service but as a code, and so imagine provisioning infrastructure and all the capabilities that ride on it, just as code. And that's where this is headed. In that model, we become provider and provisioner of services, rather than just a system. >> John: And the cost structure is completely changed because the services, Amazon has proven, and now IBM is following suit with their power platform and other things, that you can actually have the kind of compute but it's a catalog of services. So this is going to change the price competitiveness. So you know, big bids, that used to be billions of dollars, you guys can compete. I mean, am I seeing it right? >> Brian: That transition's already, that ship's sailed, so to speak, in terms of the large outsourcing deals the large, where there's apps or infrastructure, it's all moving to digital transformation consumption based commercial models. And it's really bionics that Bala mentioned a minute ago, that is our answer to the threat you described a minute ago. It's really about automating and digitizing and building intelligence into the entire, if you will, build, deliver, operate value chain of our business. >> John: Talk about the multi-vendor, multi-choice, technology-choice, as your customers and people in general on this journey of digital transformation. They have to make, they used to make technology decisions. Now they're making business logic decisions around how to reconfigure their value chains to optimize for new efficiencies and extract away inefficiencies. Blockchain is a great example, AI is another, automation is in the middle, all the cloud. So you have now business logic as the risk, technology not so much because infrastructure as code has proven that you can have server-less, you can have all kinds of coolness that can be managed in an agile way. So the business model aspect is key. How are you guys dealing with that, cause I know you're here at the IBM Think Show, their partner. I see you at the Amazon shows. We see you guys everywhere. So you're horizontally scaling. By design, is that what customers want? What is the DXC view on this? >> So our value proposition has always had partners as the key element of what we do. And so if you look at what we do, you can look at it from two perspectives. One, proprietary ways of thinking, proprietary systems are long since gone. >> And waterfall methodologies, gone, dead. >> Yes, those are all long since gone. >> If you're still doing that, note to self: you're going to be out of business. >> Exactly, so we've actually hinged a lot of what we do on our offerings, our capabilities, and so on around openness, around open source, and so forth. So that's number one. Number Two: In this world, it's no longer about just DXC or just IBM or just somebody, one person bringing everything to our clients. It's about how do you engage proactively and build co-innovation and co-services with our partners and bring that to our clients. >> I mean, IBM just announced that a deal with Google. They've got tensorflow and their deal. So you have all kinds of melting pot. Okay, let's talk about blockchain again. Go back to my favorite topic. So, if you look up that stack, you've got blockchain, you've got cryptocurrency, protocols, and what-not, mentioned securitization, you've got security tokens, you've got utility tokens. You can almost see where this is going. And then you've got on top of that, what's coming, is a mass in-migration of decentralized application developers. Okay, kind of cloud plus. You know, they know cloud, they know DevOps, infrastructure as code, but they're looking at it from a decentralization standpoint, different makeup. And you see, ICOs, initial coin offerings, I think this is an application of you know, inefficiencies around capital markets but that's, you know, put that aside for a second. But blockchain, crypto currency, and decentralized applications, how do you guys see that trend? What are you guys doing? Are you integrating it in? You mentioned token economics, you're in the banking field. Your thoughts on that? >> Bala: Sure, on the blockchain front, as I mentioned to you, there are a number of platforms that are out there. There is the R3 Corda platform. There's a platform that JPMorgan initiated that we're leveraging as well. >> John: Yeah, so they pooh-poohed Bitcoin but then they're back in the game again. (laughter) >> Bala: Yes, that's right. And then there is the Hyperledger Fabric as well. So these platforms are going to take their course of evolution and we are working across all of those platforms. Now, the more interesting thing that you mentioned is people and skills. What we've find today in the marketplace is with our clients is a dramatic shortage of skills in these areas. And so internally, what we have done at DXC is actually open our own service delivery to a vast pool of developers that you talked about earlier as being freelance, independent folks. We open our entire service delivery to them as well. And we look at that global talent pool for our own service delivery. >> Using community as a way to scale. >> Bala: Using communities, yes. And that's exactly what we're doing in our talent process. It's not just about our people, our employees, but our partners as well as what exists in the open marketplace. >> Brian, talk about the insurance area as a way to tease out other trends. Specifically, the question is What is the biggest things that people know they're walking into? What's the tail-wind that they see, that's going to give them hope? And then, What's the head-winds? What are the blockers? And what should they be aware of? What are some of the marketplace dynamics that translate into other industries? >> Brian: Well, let's start with the obvious blocker is legacy debt, right? So you talked about the risk of all that business knowledge, that domain expertise, that's all today encapsulated in existing, what you may call legacy systems, right? So that's the head-wind by far. The tail-wind is that unlike, say 15 years ago, and we were in the last sort of, dot-com boom, when it was all about the front office and customer experience, the customer is way ahead of us. So culturally, the customer is challenging industry to catch up. So that's the tail-wind in my mind. And the real opportunity is to think about it in terms of a dual agenda. So think about it in terms as progressively, simultaneously building new digital capability, whilst ultimately beginning to unbundle and tackle that legacy debt. And I think customers now are starting to see a path forward. We're in the market in both banking and insurance with digital platforms, with industry resource models, API fabrics that can go back in, modernize legacy systems. So there's a real fast time to market. >> And it changes your engagement with clients. It's not a one and done, you're sticking through the service layer. >> Brian: Oh it's a journey, but the difference, I think, between DXC and a lot of other people is that we are in the market, in production, with real assets. And you can show that journey. So it just becomes a conversation around what's your pain point? Where are you starting from? Where do you want to go? >> And you're bringing the community in to help on the delivery side, everyone wins. >> Brian: And that community is a combination of three things. That's our own employees, obviously within the industry, and within our offerings that know banking, that know insurance. It's all of the DXC people in the horizontals. Because we're bringing everything now. These platforms encapsulate infrastructure, security, service management, analytics, mobility, all of that is built into these platforms. And then, it's going out into our partner community. And then, it's going out into the open community. And we're tapping into all of those. >> John: Brian and Bala, thanks so much. 2 power CTOs here on the Cube, having a CTO conversation around how scale, cloud, AI, blockchain, new technologies are enabling new business models at a faster pace of change, with a lower cost structure, and more time to value.
