Just announcing this week the new formation of his new company, the Transformation Group. I've known Robert for over 12 years now. Influencer, futurist. You've been out and about with the virtual reality, augmented reality, you're wearing the products. >> Yup. >> You've been all over the world, you were just at Mobile World Con, we've been following you. You are the canary in the coalmine poking at all the new technology. >> Well, the next five years, you're going to see some mind blowing things. In fact, just the next year, I predict that this thing is going to turn into a three ounce pair of glasses that's going to put virtual stuff on top of the world. So think about coming back to South by Southwest, you're wearing a couple pairs of glasses, and you are going to see blue lines on the floor taking you to your next meeting or TV screens up here so I can watch the Cube while I walk around the streets here. It's going to be a lot of crazy stuff. >> So, we've been on our opening segment, we talked about it, we just had a segment on social good around volunteering, but what the theme is coming out is this counter culture where there's now this humanization aspect they called the consumerization of IT in the past. But in the global world, the human involvement now has these emersion experiences with technology, and now is colliding with impacting lives. >> Well, absolutely true. >> This is a Microsoft HoloLens first of all. And HoloLens puts virtual stuff on top of the real world. But at home, I have an HTC Vibe, and I have an Oculus Rift for VR, and VR is that immersive media. This is augmented reality or what we call mixed reality, where the images are put on top of the world. So I can see something pop off of you. In fact, last year at South by, I met a guy who started a company called iFluence, he showed me a pair of glasses and you look at a bottle like this and a little menu pops off the side of a bottle, tells you how much it is, tells you what's in the bottle, and lets you buy new versions of this bottle, like a case of it and have it shipped to my house all with my eyes. That's coming out from Google next year. >> So the big thing on the immersion the AR, you look at what's going on at societal impact. What are the things that you see? Obviously, we've been seeing at Mobile World Congress before Peelers came out, autonomous vehicles is game changing, smart cities, median entertainment, the world that we know close to our world, and then smart home. >> Oh yeah. >> Smart home's been around for years, but autonomous vehicles truly is a societal change. >> Yes. >> The car is a data center now. It's got experiences. And there's three new startups you should pay attention to, in the new cars that are coming in the next 18 months. Quanergy is one. They make a new kind of light R, a new sensor. In fact, there's sensors here that are sensing the world as I walk around and seeing all the surfaces. The car works the same way. It has to see ahead to know that there's a kid in front of your car, the car needs to stop, right. And Quanergy is making a focusable semiconductor light R, that's going to be one to watch. And then there's a new kind of brain, a new kind AI coming, and DeepScale is the one that I'm watching. The DeepScale brain uses a new third company called Luminar Technologies, which is making a new kind of 3D map of the world. So think about going down the street. This new map is going to know every pot hole, every piece of paint, every bridge on the street, and it's going to, the brain, the AI, is going to compare the virtual map to the real map, to the real world and see if there's anything new, like a kid crossing across the street. Then the car needs to do something and make a new decision. So 3D startups are going to really change the car. But the reason I'm so focused on mixed reality, is mixed reality is the user interface for the self-driving car, for the smart city, for the internet of things, the fields in your farm or what not, and for your robot, and for your drone. You're going to have drones that are going to know this space, and you can fly it right, I've seen drones already in the R & D labs at Intel. You can fly them straight at the wall, it'll stop an inch from the wall because it knows where the wall is. >> 'Cause it's got the software, it's got the sensors, the internet of things. We are putting out a new research report at Wikibound called IOT and P, Internet Things and People. And this is the key point. I want to get your thoughts on this because you nailed a bunch of things, and I want you to define for the folks watching what you mean by mixed reality because this is not augmented reality. >> Well it is. >> John: You're talking about mixed reality. >> It is augmented reality, it's just-- >> John: But why mixed reality? >> We came up with the new term called mixed reality because on our, we have augmented reality on phones. But the augmented reality you have on phones like the Pokemon's we've been talking about. They're not locked to the world. So when I'm wearing this, there's actually a shark right here on this table, and it's locked on the table, and I can walk around that shark. And it seems like it's sitting here just like this bottle of water is sitting on the table. This is mind blowing. And now we can actually change the table itself and make it something else. Because every pixel in this space is going to be mapped by these new sensors on it. >> So, let's take that to the next level. You had mentioned earlier in your talk just now about user interface to cars. You didn't say in user interface to cars, you didn't say just smart, you kind of implied, I think you meant it's interface to all the environments. >> Robert: Yes. >> Can you expand on what your thoughts on that? >> You're going to be wearing glasses that look like yours in about a year, much smaller than this. This is too dorky and too big for an average consumer to wear around right, but if they're three ounces and they look something like what you're wearing right now. >> Some nice Ray Bans, yup. >> And they're coming. I've seen them in the R & D labs. They're coming from a variety of different companies. Google, Facebook, Loomis, Magic Leap, all sorts of different companies are coming with these lightweight small glasses. You're going to wear them around and it's going to lay interface elements on everything. So think about my watch. Why if I do this gesture, why do I have to look at a little tiny screen right here? Why isn't the whole screen of my calendar pop up right here? They could do that, that's a gesture. This computer in here can sense that I'm doing a gesture and can put a new user interface on top of that. Now, I've seen tractors that have sensors in them. Now, using a glass like this, it shows me what the pumps are doing in the tractor on the glasses. I can walk around a factory floor and see the sensors in the pipes on the factory floor and see the sensors in my electric motors on the factory. All with a one pair of glasses. >> So this is why the Intel AI thing interests me, this whole theme. Because what you just described requires data. So one, you need to have the data available. >> Robert: Yes. >> The data's got to be a frictionless, it can't be locked in some schema as they say in the database world. It's got to be free to be addressed by software. >> Yes. >> You need software that understands what that is. And then you need horsepower, compute power, chips to make it all happen. >> Yeah, think about a new kind of TV that's coming soon. I'm going to look at TV like this one, a physical TV. But it's too small and it's in the wrong angle. So I can just grab the image off the TV and virtually move it over here. And I'll see it, nobody else will see it. But I can put that TV screen right here, so I can watch my TV the way I want to watch it. >> Alright so this is all sci-fi great stuff, which actually-- >> It's not sci-fi, it's here already. You just don't have it. I have it (laughs). >> Well, you can see it's kind of dorky, but I'm not going to say you're a dork 'cause I know you. To mainstream America, mainstream world, it's a bit sci-fi but people are grokking this now. Certainly the younger generation that are digital native all are coming in post-9/11, they understand that this is a native world to them, and they take to it like a fish to water. >> Yes. >> Us old guys, but we are the software guys, we're the tech guys. So continue to the mainstream America, what has to happen in your mind to mainstream this stuff? Obviously self driving cars is coming. It's in fleets first, and then cars. >> We have to take people on a journey away from computing like this or computing like this to computing on glasses. So how do we do that? Well, you have to show deep utility. And these glasses show that. Wearing a HoloLens, I see aliens coming out of the walls. Blowing holes in this physical wall. >> John: Like right now? >> Yeah. >> What are you smoking (laughs)? >> Nothing yet. And then I can shoot them with my fingers because the virtual things are mixing with the real world. It's a mind blowing experience. >> So do you see this being programmed by users or being a library of stuff? >> Some are going to be programmed by users like Minecraft is today on a phone or on a tablet. Most of it is going to be built by developers. So there's a huge opportunity coming for developers. >> Talk about the developer angle, because that's huge. We're seeing massive changes in the developer ecosystems. Certainly, open source is going to be around for awhile. But which friends do you see in open source, I mean, I'm sorry, in the developer community, with this new overlay of 5G connectivity, all this amazing cloud technology? >> There's a new 3D mapping and it's a slam based map. So think about this space, this physical space. These sensors that are on the front of these new kinds of glasses that are coming out are going to sense the world in a new way and put it into a new kind of database, one that we can put programmatic information into. So think about me walking around a shopping mall. I walk in the front door of a shopping mall, I cross geo fence in that shopping mall. And the glasses then show me information about the shopping mall 'cause it knows it's in the shopping mall. And then I say, hey Intel, can you show me, or Siri, or Alexa, or Cortana, or whoever you're talking to. >> Mostly powered by Intel (laughs). >> Most of it is powered by Intel 'cause Intel's in all the data centers and all these glasses. In fact, Intel is the manufacturer of the new kind of controller that's inside this new HoloLens. And when I ask it, I can say, hey, where's the blue jeans in this shopping mall? And all of a sudden, three new pairs of blue jeans will appear in the air, virtual blue jeans, and it'll say this one's a Guess, this one's a Levi's, this one's a whatever. And I'll say, oh I want the Levi's 501, and I'll click on it, and a blue line will appear on the floor taking me right to the product. You know, the shopping mall companies already have the data. They already know where the jeans are in the shopping mall and these glasses are going to take you right to it. >> Robert, so AI is the theme, it's hot, but AI, I mean I love AI, don't get me wrong. AI is a mental model in my mind for people to kind of figure out that this futuristic world's here and it's moving fast. But machine learning is a big part of what AI is becoming. >> Yes. >> So machine learning is becoming automated. >> Well it's becoming a lot faster. >> Faster and available. >> Because it use to take 70,000 images of something like a bottle to train the system that this is a bottle versus a can, bottle versus can. And the scientists have figured out how to make it two images now. So all I need is two images of something new to train the system that we have a bottle versus a can. >> And also the fact that computes available. There's more and more faster processors that this stuff can get crunched, the data can be crunched. >> Absolutely, but it's the data that trains these things. So let's talk about the bleeding edge of AI. I've seen AIs coming out of Israel that are just mind blowing. They take a 3D image of this table, they separate everything into an object. So this is an object. It's separate from the table that it's on. And it then lets me do AI look-ups on the object. So this is a Roxanne bottle of water. The 3D sensor can see the logo in this bottle of water, can look to the cloud, find all sorts of information about the manufacturer here, what the product is, all sorts of stuff. It might even pull down a CAD drawing like the computer that you're on. Pull down a CAD drawing, overlay it on top of the real product, and now we can put videos on the back of your Macintosh or something like that. You can do mind blowing stuff coming soon. That's one angle. Let's talk about medical. In Israel, I went to the AI manufacturers. They're training the MRI machines to recognize cancers. So you're going to be lying in an MRI machine and it's going to tell the people around the machine whether you have cancer or not and which cancer. And it's already faster than the doctor, cheaper than the doctor, and obviously doesn't need a doctor. And that's going to lead into a whole discussion-- >> The Christopher thing. These are societal problems by the way. The policy is the issue, not the technology. How do you deal with the ethical issues around gene sequencing and gene editing? >> That's a whole other thing. I'm just recognizing whether you have cancer on this example. But now we need to talk about jobs. How do we make new jobs in massive quantities. Because we're going to decimate a lot of peoples' jobs with these new technologies, so we need to talk about that, probably on a future Cube. But I think mixed reality is going to create millions of jobs because think about this bottle. In the future, I'm going to be wearing a pair of glasses and Skrillex is going to jump out of the bottle, on to the table, and give a performance, and then jump back into the bottle. That's only four years away according to the guy who's running a new startup called 8i. He's making a new volumetric camera, it's a camera 40 or 50 cameras around-- >> If you don't like Skrillex, Martin Garrix can come on. >> Whatever you want. Remember, this media's going to be personalized to your liking. Spotify is already doing that. Do you listen to Spotify? >> John: Yeah, of course. >> Do you listen to the discovery weekly feature on that? >> No. >> You should. It's magical. It brings you the best music based on what you've already listened and it's personalized. So your discovery weekly on your phone is different than the discovery weekly on my phone. And that's run by AI. >> So these are new collaborative filters. This is all about software? >> Yeah. Software and a little bit of hardware. Because you still need to sense the world in a new way. You're going to get new watches this year that have many more sensors that are looking in your veins for whether you have high blood pressure, whether you're a in shape for running. By the way, you're going to have an artificial coach when you go running in the morning, running next to you, just like when you see Mark Zuckerberg. He can afford to pay a real coach, I can't. So he has a real coach running with him every morning and saying hey, we're going to do some interval training today, we're going to do some sprints to get your cardio up. Well, now the glasses are going to do that for you. It's going to say, let's do some intervals today and you're going to wear the watch that's going to sense your blood pressure and your heart rate and the artificial coach running next you. And that's only two years away. >> Of course, great stuff. Robert Scoble, we have to close the segment. Quickly, how has South by changed in ten years? >> Well, 20, I've been coming for 20 years. I've been coming since it was 500 people and now it's 50,000, 70,000 people, it's crazy. >> How has it changed this year? What's going on this year? >> This is the VR year. Every year we have a year right. There was the Twitter year, there was the Foursquare year. This is the VR year, so if you're over at Capital Factory, you're going to see dozens of VR experiences. In fact, my co-author's playing the Mummy right now. I had to come on your show, I got the short straw (laughs). Sit in the sun instead of playing some cool stuff. But there's VR all over the place. Next year is going to be the mixed reality year, and this is a predictor of the next year that's coming. >> Alright, Robert Scoble, futurist right here on the Cube. Also, congratulations on your new company. You're going out on your own, Transformation Group. >> Yeah, we're helping out brands figure out this mixed reality world. >> Congratulations of course. Everybody welcome back to PegaWorld Inspired 2020 this is theCUBE and I'm Dave Vellante, we're here with Adam Field who is the head of innovation and experience at Pegasystems. Adam thanks for coming on, how are you doing man? >> It's my pleasure Dave, I'm doing well how are you? >> Good thank you, I'm excited we're talking innovation, we're talking to innovation hub but to start with your role I love the title, what do you do? Give us the background story. >> Yeah I get that question quite a bit so, I've been with Pega a little over 15 years now and I've held many roles, but currently as head of innovation and experience we have a team I like to call them Creative Misfits, if you will, we sort of bridge that gap between technology and creative, we do research on emerging tech and try to understand how our clients might use it, how it's going to change the future of work, that's the innovation side, on the experience side, we do things like for these PegaWorld events, we match we where art meets tech and we build these experiential things that people come and see at our events, we build all the demos and all the production that you see on the main stage, so we kind of touch a lot of different things around the future of where technology is going. >> Well, I can see, obviously you're innovative, you've got the awesome set up there, the great mic and sound, (laughing) fantastic you look good So and now you've been involved in previous PegaWorld both from behind the scenes and out front speaking obviously this is completely different, how did you prep differently for PegaWorld 2020 virtual versus what you normally do? >> Yeah right so this will be my well 16th I guess PegaWorld and obviously this one stands out as the most different normally we'd be in Boston today, we would have been, you know, working on our stage production and on a floor that's 170,000 square feet big with dozens of booths and hundreds of demos, and obviously this was completely different, but as far as prep goes, I remember the day we learned that early March, this was going virtual and after a few moments of sadness, the team really came together, and I remember the first thing we talked about is we're not going to take a three day event and try to put it all online. Let's--we know people's time is valuable, let's figure out how to take just what's important and get it out to people so that they're inspired to move forward and engage with Pega, so I think that's really been the biggest change in how we've prepped. >> Well, I think that's a great point because obviously theCUBE has been very much involved in these virtual events and. >> Right. >> People send out the note, hey we've made the tough decision to go virtual that's easy decision you really had no choice. >> That's right. >> The tough decision is what do you want to preserve from the physical and understanding that you can't just pop physical into virtual and you got to create a whole new content program, I think Robert Scoble wrote a post on, if you saw it he talks about, hey you better go out and hire Beyonce, oh you can't afford to be for Beyonce? well you better make your content interesting. So to me Adam, that's the tough part, help us understand how you thought that through and what the outcome actually is. >> Yeah, that's right. We didn't have Beyonce, but we did have the Dropkick Murphys, so that was pretty cool and they did a concert for us, so that's been great. But again a lot of people talk about all this free time that they have and I know I have two young kids who are schooling at home now, a job that's busier than it's ever been. I've tried to join a lot of these virtual events and frankly I have gotten overwhelmed, so we took two days and we boiled it down in a two and a half hours, and what we decided to do is we looked at all the areas which we go to market and how people design and deliver their apps, and some of the tech like Pega cloud that they use. And we went to our, I went to my extended team and I said, normally you have 75 booths, we're going to boil that down to 25, let's work together to figure that out. Normally your demos might be 20 minutes when someone walks up, we want to make them seven. But I think the biggest thing that we did, we said what we don't want to lose is that interactivity, and so we had online dozens of Pega experts we could ask questions live, Alan was online doing answering questions live. We made sure that we included live components, our host, Don Sherman was live from his house. We didn't just pre-record everything because then, why would anyone come join when they could just go watch it, 30 minutes later on your YouTube channel? >> See that's innovation to me is having that combination of live. Obviously, you've got to do some stuff a prerecorded, but having a live component adds a dimension, it's challenging, but that's pushing the envelope and I love it. The other thing is, Adam is roles. The roles are different in a virtual event, are they? You're not doing site inspections Like you said, you're not dealing with 170,000 square feet. How did you guys rethink the roles for virtual? >> Yeah so, there were some teams whose world was completely upended. You know, when this all went virtual, the people that do exactly what you were just talking about, dealing with hotels and vendors and things like that, and I got to tell you, one of the most events called PegaWorld Inspire and not to sound too cheesy about it, but one of the things that was really inspiring was to see how everyone stepped up and said, truly, how can I help? And what was really neat about it is we saw different skill sets come out of people that, maybe they hadn't had the opportunity to flex before where they might've worked on one thing that was no longer needed because of the change in the format, and they jumped into become copywriters or liaisons between cause now we have new vendors in this tech world that we didn't have that we turned around in just a matter of weeks. We had people like on my team who normally last year, build this massive physical exhibit containing mirrors and lights, that became video producers, to produce some of these live videos that we did. And one of the things was really impressive, you asked earlier about how did we prep differently and what changed? We looked in the marketplace for different tech and how to bring our CEO and our host and our head of product and everyone together live in split screen, and when you're a big studio you know, and you have that equipment ready to go, that's easy, but when you're just getting average people in their homes and you want to put all that together, we're finding some of the tech in the marketplace just wasn't there. My team built some new video chat technologies that they actually use to produce this in real time, so that was really impressive to me how we turn that around and really innovated not only the things that everyone sees, but all the stuff behind the scenes to. >> See again I think this is what's amazing to me is as I learned more and more about Pega interview Alan earlier. >> Sure. >> Pega is all about being able to adapt to these changes. So a lot of the processes we are using in virtual events, they're unknown. In normally software right through the history of software is okay, here's how the software works. Figure out how to fit your process into it, very rigid. >> That's right. >> Today you know, the last three months with this lockdown in this coronavirus have been completely unknown, and so that's sort of one of the hallmarks of your company, isn't it? >> That's right and we've had the tagline Build For Change for really long time, and I will tell you, I remember in that first meeting again, when we learned this was going virtual and someone stood up and they said, guys we're about to live our tagline. And people really do believe in that, 'cause we go to our clients every single day and say, change is what's going to make you special changes is what's going to make you different, now's your opportunity, seize that change and run with it. And so we said, look, we can't change the world right now, we know we got to go virtual, all we can do is change the type of event that we do, we're not going to do the standard event that we think every one else is going to do, let's do it differently and today was a pretty good example, I think we achieved that. >> I think a couple of things from a challenge standpoint, you mentioned the chat, how do you get people to engage? You had to sort of invent something. >> Yeah. >> And then really think it through for virtual. And I think the other is tech people come to these events, they want to touch the tech. And so you've got you know the innovation hub, it's where people get to play with the technology. You got to take us through how you thought through that and. >> Right. >> What the outcome is. >> Yeah, so that is the toughest part, and I got to tell you, you know all of this being said, I'm looking forward to someday being able to get back and meeting my clients in person, and I'm the type, when I see you on the floor of the innovation hub, I run by a booth and high five you for all the great weeks of hard work, you know? And I love to see people's faces, they see the demos and that's tough not being able to see them smile and get that moment of wow. But what was interesting was it really helped us hone our messages. I think we really realized when I went to everybody and said you don't have 20 minutes, you have seven minutes, here's a template, to follow, to be able to tell your story better, and people started thinking in that mode of storytelling, and what was interesting was lot of people came back to me and said, actually you know what? I can tell that story in a much more crisp way and really show people what they need to see in a in a much faster timeframe. And what it really allowed us to do was find those bits that we thought were most important, find those demos that we think are most important and just, you know bubble those up. One of the things we also did too, we took the opportunity to say you know what, we're going to be online, I watch my kids. My kids are avid gamers whether I like it or not, and they. >> Yeah. >> Watch these Twitch streams, and we thought well, we should be able to do that with even corporate software. So we had these live build sessions where we took some of our developers and I said you're going to be put on the hot seat for 15 minutes on script and we're going to let people just guide and direct you. And they were a little nervous at first, but they went off great, and it was a new format we had never tried before. So if we keep doing these types of different things and we just embrace the moment that we're in I think people will really really come to it and get some value out of it. >> I mean that's awesome, you've got to keep your audience engaged, and so you do lose, you don't have a captive audience, so you lose some time in terms of how much you can you know? how much Kool-Aid injection you can give him. I mean take 20 minutes down to seven minutes. But so you do lose some of that, but what do you gain with virtual? >> Well, I think one of the things that you obviously gain is you can be more widespread, so yeah, you know this event reached tens of thousands of people in dozens of countries. I did an event first week of April, so you can imagine you know, we had two weeks to turn on and I was supposed to be in London and Amsterdam presenting in soccer stadiums. And instead we made that a one hour virtual event and we thought, well, we're just going to get people from the London market and from the Netherlands market, and it turned out, we got people from all over the world to join. So one of the benefits to this is the reach, so we're able to reach a lot more people. I'd say one of the other just things that we realized after tours we're creating a lot of content, we filmed all of this as we were rehearsing, and we're going to put it up online later, so now we have all this great content that anyone can use and go view later, so that was sort of you know, unexpected outcome as well. >> Right yeah, you lose the airline miles, but you gain. (laughing) as I want to going to say you gian the post. >> I don't mind not traveling as well. >> Yeah I here you but, but you do gain that post and I think with physical events, people always at the end of it, it's like, I've never given birth, but I've witnessed that many times. but people feel like, okay, I got to just chill out now for a couple of weeks, and then when they come back, now they're swamped, they've got to catch up. And I think people are realizing, wow, there's a real opportunity maximize the post event here, post nurturing peep streaming out content and continue that engagement, that is a plus of these virtual event. >> Oh, for sure, and you know we started early on deciding how are we going to do, what are we going to do is follow ups you know? That European event that I talked about once again instead of taking all these different markets and trying to replicate it, we did one one hour event. But then because we were in the early days of COVID and some of our clients weren't able to get recorded and speak, we did subsequent webinars in the weeks following them, and the attendance was fantastic. So it allowed us to plan ahead and you know, have a lot of followup activities that we're starting to launch right now as soon as the event ended. >> How do you feel about the outcome for Pega? Do you think it was better, worse, the same or just different? >> I'm going to go with different you know, like I said I get energy I love being up on stage in front of 5,000 people, I love meeting my clients in person, I love the energy of being with my colleagues, but you know it is what it is, We had to do it, and I think what we really embraced it, so I'll say it's just a different way of doing things, but you know I do look forward to the day that I'm able to go meet my clients again and get back on stage and produce some really great things and once again being able to physically see our attendees go oh, when they actually see the software in person, that's the most rewarding thing for me. >> It's going to be interesting as we come out of this I mean, very clearly things are going to be different probably going to have hybrid for some time. Maybe even indefinitely but I'm interested in some of the learnings, some of the things that you think will be permanent, some of the advice. And one of the things I always say to people is don't start with what software are we going to use in there? Your software platform, think about the experience that you want to work backwards from there but what are other advice would you give for given your experiences? >> Right. >> You're so right about that point, I remember interviewing a lot of vendors that we were going to use to bring this online and we were telling them what we wanted to do, and some of them said no one's ever asked about that before we can't do that, so you're a hundred percent right about that. The advice I will say, and the thing I do worry about a little bit is, at first people were a little bit more accepting if maybe the video quality wasn't as good, or you know the content was like any old webinar. As months ago on expectations are going to be higher, people are going to have attended a lot of these things so you're going to have to keep upping the game. And I think the advice I would give is try to take what's great about an in person event and put it online but don't try to replicate the event and put it online. And some of the best things about in person events are just the live nature of it, take the risks, do some live stuff. People will really appreciate that, you'll get a lot of credit for that. The interactivity is what's important about a live event, so as best you can, figure out how to make sure there's some interactivity. Now in the early days I think it's going to be some live Q and A as we move on, it'll be real private rooms with experts that you're able to have one-on-one chats and go through and bounce around and be able to talk to people you know, just like you would accept, between two cameras instead of in person. So I think everyone is months go on. they just going to have to up their game. I think that's great advice, you're absolutely right up your game, up your brand, get a good camera, get good sound, and it's going to just, help your personal brand and your company's brand. Adam. >> We learned what it was like to try to ship microphone and camera equipment around the world (laughing) overnight so we're experts at that, if you you've got any questions. >> Well, I mean what a difference it made, so Adam, thanks so much for coming on theCUBE and sharing your experiences. Welcome to the Cube's exclusive coverage of the Samsung Developer Conference, here in San Francisco at Moscone West. I'm John Furrier, co-founder of SiliconANGLE media, co-host of theCUBE. I'm here with Gregarious Narain, who's the co-founder of Before Alpha, an old friend of mine who introduced me to pod-casting back in 2004, right when the MP3 was put into the RSS feed. The early days of blogging, the early days of social. You're one of the most prolific social engineers I know. You've been there from day one. Great to see you. >> Yeah, you too, man. Long time. >> What a wave it's been. >> I know. >> Web 2.0, you were at the front end of creating with-- >> Fortunately they didn't make a 3.0. [Both Chuckle] >> Thank God, because Web 2.0 bursted. But those were the days, I mean, just think back, okay, Web 1.0 post-bubble burst, Web 2.0 you were part of a crew of folks. We were all small community at the time, really kind of rubbing nickels together trying to make things happen. You know, back then TechCrunch was formed, PodTech was formed, you had your venture going on, and we all were, before social media existed, we were doing stuff. Scoble was brought down from Microsoft with my start-up, PodTech. But, we were all kind of trying to figure out this new infrastructure. And then the bubbling burst a little bit, but it ended up turning out to be true that social infrastructure was created. Facepost we saw pre-Facebook was obsolete; MySpace. But the social graph, okay, that extended out from RSS with enabled blogging created some great innovations. We're seeing the value of interest graphs develop. >> Yeah. >> And a term that I coined, called the Value-Graph is now extending on top of the interest graph. Some term that we call in theCUBE which is a new form of collaboration is happening. You're riding this new wave, you've got your new firm. You're leading companies through transformation. What's your take of the Samsungs of the world, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Google. You got a lot of these old tech guards. >> Yeah. >> Trying to be consumer companies and infrastructure companies, B-to-B means B-to-C. But B-to-B is 'boring to boring'. >> Yeah. >> We don't want B-to-B anymore, we want the new. >> Gregarious: That's right. >> Everything to everything. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> Exciting to exciting. >> I think, you know, you nailed a lot of the points, I think, that are really interesting, because, you know, innovation is really about sort of like, blending cultural change and technological change together, right? And forming new things. And it usually is a succession of small iterations, And some moon shots, right? And I think like what Samsung's doing that's really interesting is that they bring all that stuff online in real time. Like, we don't wait, you know, ten years to hear about what the next innovation is. It's popping out before you even warm up your other phone, right? I think, you know, in the States, we're almost at a little bit of a disadvantage in seeing the breadth of Samsung, because like such of their footprint is actually significantly bigger. It's not nearly as adopted here, but I think as, you know, this, the theme today was the intelligence of things, really. I think it was a really powerful idea really. >> And they're onstage with Google, you see the relationship with Google, shining forward, I see a lot of big applause there, Google, also Android, not Apple, no iOS. >> Yeah, yeah. >> But this speaks to the consumer company of Samsung Hardware, even their IOT they are under the hood. >> Right. >> Geeky stuff, they put extra security modules in there, for device security, because now the hardware stacks are merging with software stacks. >> That's right, yeah. So, this is the challenge, because you know how hard it is to do database work. >> Yeah. >> We got a lot of unstructured data. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> Data is now a real-time dynamic, self-driving cars. You can't have latency less than nanoseconds. >> Gregarious: Yeah, that's right. >> And so, databases just don't cooperate that way. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> So a new architecture is being developed. What's your vision and thoughts about how companies are re-imagining? What are you seeing out there? I know it's early innings, but what are your thoughts? >> Well I think, you know, we went through this software as a service generation, right? Where, sort of software was at the center, right? Social was at the edge. Now the human is moving to the center, and I would say, with that, they're clutching to their devices, right? And so, there is a piece of hardware with every person basically, that's invoked. And I think hardware is becoming as extensible as software ultimately. And I think it is also being deconstructed, right? And I think a log of that Web 2.0 sort of aura was really the deconstruction, or the breakdown of sort of large monolithic services, down into smaller, discreet services that are addressable and serviceable. We're seeing that happen out on the hardware side as well. Things as really just micro-devices, you know, that embody all the pieces. >> If you look at the trend lines, right now we're kind of going back, but connecting the dots forward, there's a massive tsunami going on in opensource development. Linux Foundation was just down in L.A., talking about a exponential growth in new software shift, and a new class of developers coming in. Containerization in Cooper Netis' points to microservices, a whole other level of developer goodness at the top of the stack, freeing up the infrastructure configuration for the cloud, or 'dev ops' as we call it. >> Yeah. >> This is the phenomenon, this is the big wig. This isn't about developers being the guys writing, punching out code, this is front lines stuff. And certainly AR shows and devices from Samsung show. >> Well, and I think the interesting thing is that, with these hardware building blocks too, though, it's allowing software developers to articulate hardware without actually learning the hardware bits and pieces, right? So I think it's like, much idea obstraction, like, you don't have to know how byte code was generated now to work on the web, you sort of, don't necessarily know hardware is put together to be able to actually command an army of hardware pieces. >> How familiar with Samsung's cloud and data strategy, one of the things I see missing in the keynotes today, and clearly missing in the show, so this is kind of a critical analysis of Samsung, is I don't see a lot of the cloud. I see Smart Cloud, Samsung Cloud sprinkled around. I don't see a lot of cloud specifics. And they're not being specific around how the data is being used. >> Yeah. >> Like Alibaba there in China last week, data, data, data, refueling data, data acquisition, data usage, using data as a development tool, I'm not seeing that here. >> Well, I- >> Am I missing it, or...? >> I don't know, well I think at some of the pavilions around there are deeper dives in that, but I might argue that this is almost an intentional thing, right, like in some ways, because we're consumerizing more and more of these pieces. You know, AI scares the crap out of a lot of people. Right? Like and so do I really want to go deeper? >> You mean in a creepy way, or just like a surveillance way? >> I think all ways, right? Like, people are, you know, much like with personalization, you want to all wait until it's too good, right? And you know, I think this is a challenge. >> John: Like what else do they know about? >> Yeah, exactly, right? And so, how much of weeds are necessary? I think like at a developer-centric event like this, yes, like there definitely should be deeper dives, but likely not on that, I mean- >> So, from a messaging standpoint, probably best not to put data out there? It brings up questions. >> Yeah, all this stuff, this is Blendo, right? It all becomes consumer now, right? Like, so the more you put out there, the more you sort of alienate, potentially, adoption. >> So one of the things that we see, obviously, with theCUBE covers hundreds of events in the Enterprise and emerging tech area, but as we get more to the consumers with Samsung, Alibaba, Amazon, and so on, the consumerization trend is definitely here. That changes how businesses do business. IT, information technology, or called IT departments are no longer a department, it's now a fabric of how companies work because you have on-premise hardware, you buy your servers, but now you're operating on a cloud model. >> Yeah. >> You're using public Cloud with it; Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba, Samsung, whatever, do people care, if it works? >> Yeah. >> So this new phenomenon is shaping how companies are architecting their innovation strategies. >> Yeah. >> You guys are doing a lot of this at your Before Alpha venture. >> Gregarious: Yeah. >> What are you guys doing, is it early days? Are you just basically like, crawl, walk, run stage? Give us an update on the customer. >> Yeah, we look at innovation from like four points of view. As I mentioned earlier, that technological versus cultural, and really, you know, it goes back to the hardest start-ups, right, it's like when large companies see start-ups, they're like, we love what these guys are doing, and the real question they should ask is, "why do these guys exist?" Right? And usually, it's like either one thing, right? Like our norms or our beliefs have changed on the cultural side, or there's a new model of efficacy, or efficiency that's possible, right, inside of your business. So, we will get a perspective change, like am I in the right business, right? Is Samsung in the hardware business, or are they in the intelligence business? Right, like sort of question their positing now, right? What's the persona then, if we're in the intelligence business, 'cause suddenly it's not just the people who buy hardware bits and pieces, it's all the people who consume intelligence. What are the processes we use to build that stuff, how do we surface it, and of course, what are the products? What are the things that land in people' hands? >> Yeah, and I think one of the things I would add to that, is that the element of how they use compute power, because we look at internet of things, which is a message here, it's not too sexy, mainstream doesn't get IOT, but AI can service itself, self-driving cars essentially, you know, machine learning meets IOT which you could call AI. People can grop that and understand the self-driving car, but, you know, airplane connected to the internet, or machines on a factory line, that brings up the role of the data, so the compute power is critical. You don't want to move data around the network, so it's interesting how companies will buy their compute. Do they rent it? Do they send it around like a virtual machine? >> Yeah. >> So these are like legacy infrastructure things that are really high impact to architecture. >> Yeah, well you know, and also when you think about you know, fractional compute, and the whole timeshare model for compute, it is also another area where you have to really readjust, and reconfigure the way your entire system works, to be able to take advantage of it. >> Yeah, and one of the things we're seeing, when it comes to Intel transforming from being a chip company to a supplier of equipment to basically a compute company. >> Yeah. >> We're seeing things that- >> It's that perspective change, right? >> Well, yeah, I mean you got to look at computers now, with Cloud, unlimited potential resources. >> Exactly. You can spin up a zillion virtual machines on the cloud, to do an edge analysis, whether it's a car or something else that's a luxury we didn't have back in the days when you were doing your first venture, did we? >> Yeah, no. >> Whole new world. Final thoughts, what are you working on now? What's the coolest thing you're doing? Give us an update on what's happening for you in the next year or so. >> Ah, the coolest thing, I think, the most exciting work is when we work with companies who sort of understand that either the future is upon them, or that they need to get ahead of it, right? And so, like I say when we're working with customers who do have perspective change, it's like really reinventing their universe, I think that's really, really powerful. It's better, you know, when it's proactive, as opposed to like, great, someone just sat on our head, but you know, sometimes you get there how you get there. So we're doing a lot of work I think looking at like, the technology of the future, but more importantly, how it will impact consumers today, and you know, really the evolution of your own customer base. >> Co-founder of Before Alpha, he's the 'Lead Alpha.' Gregarious, great to have you on theCUBE. Final thought, you've seen many waves, you've worked as a CTO, you've worked on start-ups, you worked with database, you worked social technology, now you're working kind of helping customers put together the future. What's the big learnings that you've seen over the past ten years that you're putting into place now, from a practical perspective to bring to your customers? >> Yeah, you know, I think everyone asks me, 'what's the secret to innovation?' That's the number one question I probably get. I have a list but the one thing I put at the top of the list is permission, right, which is that organizations tend to fail at this because people don't feel like they have permission to do it, they don't have permission to fail, they don't have permission to not work on something else that's taking up fifty percent of their calendar, right? And I think, you know, you see Samsung's innovative culture right, like for other brands, companies, corporations to be successful, if they don't enable, give that permission to their employees, they're never going to make it. >> Certainly with Cloud, you can try something new, and iterate, we see the lean start-up culture, kind of growing and artistry kind of coming in mainstream. Thoughts on artistry and art in technology coming together? >> I think it was a natural, peanut butter and jelly kind of moment from the beginning. Right, you talk to any engineer, any developer, they view what they do as art, right? And the expression of that, it takes any number of forms. >> And the great news is at the front lines, as they get more consumer tech, with like Samsung and Apple, you see guys out in the front lines really adding value, changing the scope of what's possible. >> It's the creator movement, right? Like they were having here is a big theme at this event as well. >> Right, creator moment, building the good apps, great technology, just theCUBE, creating great content here on the ground, at the edge of the network, here at the Samsung Developer Conference in Moscone West in San Fransisco. We are here live in the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, this is SiliconANGLE's The Cube, our flagship program. We go out to the events and extract the signal from the noise, I'm John Furrier, the co-founder of SiliconANGLE, joined with my co-host Peter Burris with SiliconANGLE's Wikibon.com, head of research. Our next guest is Aaron Schidler VP of Cloud Industry Product Development. A lot there. Cross-industry, horizontally scalable product development. Welcome to The Cube, thanks for joining us. >> Aaron: Thank you. >> So, I mean there's a lot going on at this show, modern CX is the hashtag, it also is the theme. It's not modern marketing, cloud experience show. It's an integrated message with one clear message: Customer experience. Everything's -- that's the end game of this platform. It's hard. Take a minute to just talk about, in context, to set the table -- What's happening? Why is all this the focus now? >> I think it's interesting, over the past, 10 years, we went from everyone having structured, on-premise applications, that took a year to two years to manage and upgrade. Then all of a sudden, all these great cloud innovations started coming into the picture, and the question was: How do we introduce them? So the business made buying decisions. They bought the great capabilities and now they're trying to figure out: How do we move more to the cloud? For the agility that we get, but more importantly: How do we start standardizing, creating a platform for taking these capabilities forward for our customers? >> John: We did an earlier segment today it felt like a history class, because we're all like historians talking about the old days. But if you think about the role of software over the years -- Shrink wrapped software, download it from the internet, SaaS, and now, going to the next level is a new, kind of modern version of SaaS, whether you call it infrastructure, service platforms, (mumbles), services and SaaS. But basically, it's in the cloud. All cloud all the time. On premise or in the public cloud, which you guys have. This requires more intelligence. This adaptive, machine-learning, AI, augmented intelligence thing is happening. This is making smarter customer experiences. (chuckling) What does that actually mean? Because this is your wheelhouse. >> Yeah. No, and smarter, it's a great question. It's probably the talk of the hallways throughout the course of the week. Is how do we make our applications smarter? And I think there are two parts to it. One is, you have to make it simpler. So we just talked about the platform and trying to identify what are those key processes. For me, from an industry perspective, it's what are the key processes in manufacturing? What are the key processes in pharmaceuticals? What are the key processes in automotive? And how do we deliver a solution there? But just doing the transactional stuff was yesterday's news. The question is really: How do we start to take data and information that we have along with some science and create a different experience? Create one that we take the learnings from old and apply them so that the next best offer that we make is one that's based on you and other people like you and the products that you've bought. So we're really looking at just baking in that intelligence along the way so that sales reps and service reps don't have to figure it out themselves. They leverage the power of the company and the data. >> It sounds easy but it's not. But I want to ask a specific question because one of the ethos of the cloud is horizontally scalable. And that's a nice way to think about data, and we've heard that throughout the show so far. But in the industries, in vertical industries, there's unique things, that require some specialism. >> Aaron: Yeah, that's right. So you have a kind of notion of, I need horizontally scalable, but also I got to have some specialty differentiation for the apps. So this is a key part of the platform that you guys are building. How do you talk to customers? Because in the old days it was full vertical stack. Here's your software. Retail industry, health, human services, whatever it is. How is that different now? >> We're leveraging the same horizontal capabilities so that we don't have to redefine it. I would argue that we've started from a smarter place based on our history at Oracle, we understand that companies want to work with customers, customers may work with partners, and customers may also be a contact that's part of a household. So as you start to build that horizontal set of capabilities for the platform, those things were taken into mind. But your points are spot on in that, at the end of the day, nobody cares whether you have a great horizontal platform, what they care about is, as an automotive manufacturer: Can by OEM's talk to the dealer's in a way that makes sense? Can we help pass leads that come in from customers to the manufacturer efficiently, to the right company to be able to support them? So it requires us to address, I call it three areas >> - excuse me -- six areas. The data model: How do we define data for the industry? The business policies and processes: How do you take those leads and get them to the right people and contacts to the industry requirement. The next piece is user experience. A branch banker has a completely different view than a person that's doing your financial wealth advising across the table, is different than me using my mobile application from my home to transact. Integrations are also important. Oracle comes with a little bit of requirement around: How do I complete end-to-end? Because we provide end-to-end capabilities. So if I'm a bank; How do I integrate my front-end applications, my CX apps, into my core banking platform applications? If I'm a communications company; How do I tie into OSS and BSS systems? So integration becomes a key requirement. >> Two more left, come on! >> Aaron: I'm getting them. (laughing) Analytics, different measurements and metrics for each industry, as to how you're going to adapt and perform and then finally, we are talking about cloud, and cloud means that we're taking on some of the responsibility of making sure that regulatory and compliance requirements for the data centers that we support and manage are also supported. >> And also how they consume the software. >> Aaron: That's exactly right. >> And that's now moving to a subscription model. >> I think there's a seventh, which you may want to add, which is semantics. Especially as you start thinking about AI; What do things mean? It's more than just the measurements. I want to tie this back to the whole concept of CX though. >> Aaron: Yep. >> The historical orientation of vertical industry was, these businesses are common or similar because they have similar assets. Retail had a store, had a warehouse, had, you know, point of sale. Those types of things. Digital transformation reduces the specificity of those assets. >> Aaron: Yeah. >> Amazon's a retail company as much as Walmart is. They're competing >> Aaron: Yeah. >> But they have a very very different arrangement of assets. >> Does CX now become, or is the new vertical orientation now, not your arrangement of assets but the customers you serve? Where these customers have common characteristics and the companies that are in transportation serve customers in this moment, in this way. Companies that are in retail serve customers in this moment, in this way. And that's what's really driving so much of the CX. Is the vertical orientation moving from an asset focus to a customer focus, a need focus, a moment focus. What do you think? >> No, I think it certainly makes it easier. And in fact, you used the one word that's sort of binding all of them together, which is digital. And maybe the second word would be real-time. And so whether I'm talking to a SIC code of retail, meaning traditional retailer, or a bank that wants to have a better retail experience. All of those are about; Do you know me? Can you provide me a personalized journey through the process? And can you do it without necessarily engaging with people through the entire experience? Now, omni-channel is certainly important. But I can't tell you the last time I went into a branch bank location. All of my work's really been done on a digital channel. With that said, the processes are still unique. So when I talk about my cellular phone, and management of the cellular phone, the minutes make more sense to me than if I'm talking to my banking application and the dollars make sense to me. So the ingredients that I highlighted before in terms of an industry solution are still relevant. Some of the themes that you highlighted around digital transformation and real-time are definitely new to this new world that we're in around customer engagement. >> Which industries are you guys supporting? Because again, you know, industries have unique requirements. But you have a platform, so, conceptually, you should be able to spin up these industries pretty quickly. Which ones do you guys have supported? And what are coming? >> So I think there are two parts that I'd highlight. One is, it is easy to set up because we set the platform up in the beginning, knowing we wanted to deliver industry-specific capability. So I think that's a differentiator that Oracle's providing. But I think the second piece is, there are several industries that, in fact, customers can use our capabilities horizontally to support. We've got about 20 industries that customers are purchasing our products to use in. With that said, we've put specific investment into areas like communications, banking, consumer goods and retail, and there's some synergies there that you highlighted where consumer goods companies want to get to know their customers more directly. So lots of synergies there. We just announced and released a higher ed set of capabilities as well. And a roadmap for several others. So those are the key primary targets that we had with more to come this year. >> John: That's super, super awesome. What's unique -- share with the folks, take a minute to explain what's unique going on in your job, that they may not know about that you could share. Is it the data that you watch? As a product developer, you've got to look at, I mean you got to, to use cloud terms, "stand up" solutions fast. Your customers have to now do that. Whether it's an app, it should be agile, you know, three weeks, innovation's complete. That's kind of the cycle which we're seeing in cloud. Three week development, that's it. Not three years or three months, three week. >> Aaron: Yeah. >> I mean, imagine that. So imagine a three week development cycle. What does it take? What are the most important things that people should know about that you're working on and that make that happen? >> Yeah I think the, and I've met with a dozen customers already here this week, and I think the most common discussion is, we've got a lot of the capabilities, we need to define what our vision is. So while you've got some on-premise capabilities still, now you're augmenting it with things like data science and other ingredients. The question is, what's the vacation you're going on? What are the stops along the way that take you ten days to 30 days? And how do we start to create a vision that goes end-to-end from the time we engage with our customers for the first time to the time we engage with them for the hundredth time. So I would say most of that is really around helping customers strategically think about how these solutions are going to tie together, what business values and benefits they're going to be delivering, and how do we leverage the assets that they have today in order to do that? >> So is it the vision of Oracle to the customer, or the customer's vision of how it's going to use technology, and how it's going to be reflected back in Oracle? Or a combination of both? >> It's a little bit of both. We've had several customer advisory boards this week where we gather feedback from customers. But the reality is, if you have an advisory board with all automotive manufacturers where we had about 25 companies come together this week, they all have great ideas, but what's interesting is when you bring a retailer in to talk to them and have them highlight some of the things that they're doing that are working in their industry that are leading edge and may generate some new ideas. So I think a lot of the customers are looking really for Oracle to sum up all of the engagements that we have with these companies, come up with those key things that we think could transform their industry, and then deliver it as a simplified solution so that they can uptake it in ten to 30 days. >> So they're kind of pulling you in the direction of Oracle becoming a digital capabilities company. >> Aaron: Yeah, that's right. In terms of; How can you A. Help us with vision, and then B. Help us deliver the pieces that make sense for Oracle? We've got a rich set of partners as well. It's hard to leave them out, in terms of digital agencies, and/or implementation partners. We also have partners that have built and developed innovative capabilities for industry that we've integrated into these solutions. But I think in terms of the total vision, we have a unique perspective that an individual customer, or company, or industry might not have. >> My final question for you is, Everyone likes to know, what's the hallway conversion? And that's where you hear a lot of the commentary on, Oh great keynote. But I want to ask specifically around what customers are saying. You've been doing a lot on customer activities in the hallways and meetings. We're hearing some. What's your take on the hallway customer conversations? What are they talking about in the halls? >> Yeah, automation, I think, in terms of, and the AI portions of what we're discussing. How can we make the resources that we have smarter? Make them more intelligent about the learnings that we have as an overall company, and then be able to parlay that into the processes, not as a separate set of flows, but into the processes that we educate today. And it's interesting, you could highlight a buzz word bingo card with things like IoT, and AI -- >> And ML and VR and AR and machine learning, virtual reality, augmented reality... >> But the question isn't; Can you do those things? The question is: Can you do it in context to the customer experience to change the game? And that's really the fun part of this for me. >> John: I had a conversation with Robert Scoble who's a futurist and a friend, and he's really been talking about this Mixed Reality and he's talking about Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality, but if you think about what you guys are doing here with modern CX is the mixed reality from the consumer perspective is, wherever they are. (laughing) I'm shopping. Or, I have a wearable, or maybe someday a headset or some sort of augmented experience. You've got to be ready for it. >> Aaron: Yeah. You're the guy who has to build the products and lay the architecture down. So what's the roadmap look like for you guys? Without giving away the secrets, you know, for a customer that's maybe watching; What's the arc for the product development team? What are the top priorities? >> I think there are two big things that I would highlight. One is simplification. I think all of the cloud choices that customers had for a long period of time gave them access to innovations that they hadn't had before. The question was the practicality and how can we start pulling those together, so Oracle really has a responsibility to simplify that set of discussions. And the second part is we've got to innovate, we've got to show people that there's a path to leverage all of those buzzword bingo items in your day to day job to deliver business value. So I think you'll see out of us, taking some of the themes that you're hearing about as individual conversations and start baking them into the DNA and fabric of the solutions. >> John: Oh well I've seen Amit Zavery, a Cube alumni who's been on multiple times, great executive, super smart, big fan of his work, trying to get developer oriented around cloud native, Siddhartha Agarwal, was also on The Cube in our offices. And there's movement within Oracle to be cloud native. Is there a developer plan, or is that just groping for relevance in the outside of Oracle world, is there a dot to be connected in the cloud native world where Oracle is now playing with public cloud? How do you talk to those customers? Because you don't see a lot of Oracle developers out there outside of Oracle. You've got a lot of Oracle developers, doing DBA's and systems work, how about that developer, app developer, how do you get them? Is there a plan? >> You know, I think it's the innovation and the discussion about innovation. There are probably people other than me that will highlight some of the details but you may have seen some press releases recently that talk about how we're introducing some innovation centers for us to recruit the types of people that you're highlighting, and change the perception, if you will, on some of the things that Oracle's done in the past to highlight some of the innovations that we're delivering now in cloud. >> John: I mean you've got a lot of platform value to potentially share. >> Aaron: That's right. >> To some app developers out there on iOS. So there is a plan? >> Aaron: Absolutely a plan. >> Okay Aaron, thanks so much for coming on The Cube. Really appreciate the insight. Alison Yu, Cloudera - SXSW 2017 - #IntelAI - #theCUBE

I'm John Furrier of Silicon Angle for the Cube. Our next guest is Alison Yu who's with Cloudera. And in the news today, although they won't comment on it. It's great to see you, social media manager at Cloudera. >> Yes, it's nice to see you as well. >> Great to see you. So, Cloudera has a strategic relationship with Intel. You guys have a strategic investment, Intel, and you guys partner up, so it's well-known in the industry. But what's going on here is interesting, AI for social good is our theme. >> Alison: Yes. >> Cloudera has always been a pay-it-forward company. And I've known the founders, Mike Olson and Amr Awadallah. >> Really all about the community and paying it forward. So Alison, talk about what you guys are working on. Because you're involved in a panel, but also Cloudera Cares. And you guys have teamed up with Thorn, doing some interesting things. >> Alison: Yeah (laughing). >> Take it away! >> Sure, thanks. Thanks for the great intro. So I'll give you a little bit of a brief introduction to Cloudera Cares. Cloudera Cares was founded roughly about three years ago. It was really an employee-driven and -led effort. I kind of stepped into the role and ended up being a little bit more of the leader just by the way it worked out. So we've really gone from, going from, you know, we're just doing soup kitchens and everything else, to strategic partnerships, donating software, professional service hours, things along those lines. >> Which has been very exciting to see our nonprofit partnerships grow in that way. So it really went from almost grass-root efforts to an organized organization now. And we start stepping up our strategic partnerships about a year and a half ago. We started with DataKind, is our initial one. About two years ago, we initiated that. Then we a year ago, about in September, we finalized our donation of an enterprise data hub to Thorn, which if you're not aware of they're all about using technology and innovation to stop child-trafficking. So last year, around September or so, we announced the partnership and we donated professional service hours. And then in October, we went with them to Grace Hopper, which is obviously the largest Women in Tech Conference in North America. And we hosted a hackathon and we helped mentor women entering into the tech workforce, and trying to come up with some really cool innovative solutions for them to track and see what's going on with the dark web, so we had quite a few interesting ideas coming out of that. >> Okay, awesome. We had Frederico Gomez Suarez on, who was the technical advisor. >> Alison: Yeah. >> A Microsoft employee, but he's volunteering at Thorn, and this is interesting because this is not just donating to the soup kitchens and what not. >> Alison: Yeah. >> You're starting to see a community approach to philanthropy that's coding RENN. >> Yeah. >> Hackathons turning into community galvanizing communities, and actually taking it to the next level. >> Yeah. So, I think one of the things we realize is tech, while it's so great, we have actually introduced a lot of new problems. So, I don't know if everyone's aware, but in the '80s and '90s, child exploitation had almost completely died. They had almost resolved the issue. With the introduction of technology and the Internet, it opened up a lot more ways for people to go ahead and exploit children, arrange things, in the dark web. So we're trying to figure out a way to use technology to combat a problem that technology kind of created as well, but not only solving it, but rescuing people. >> It's a classic security problem, the surface area has increased for this kind of thing. But big data, which is where you guys were founded on in the cloud era that we live in. >> Alison: Yeah. >> Pun intended. (laughing) Using the machine learning now you start with some scale now involved. >> Yes, exactly, and that's what we're really hoping, so we're partnering with Intel in the National Center of Missing Exploited Children. We're actually kicking off a virtual hackathon tomorrow, and our hope is we can figure out some different innovative ways that AI can be applied to scraping data and finding children. A lot of times we'll see there's not a lot of clues, but for example, if we can upload, if there can be a tool that can upload three or four different angles of a child's face when they go missing, maybe what happens is someone posts a picture on Instagram or Twitter that has a geo tag and this kid is in the background. That would be an amazing way of using AI and machine learning-- >> Yeah. >> Alison: To find a child, right. >> Well, I'll give you guy a plug for Cloudera. And I'll reference Dr. Naveen Rao, who's the GM of Intel's AI group, was on earlier. And he was talking about how there's a lot of storage available, not a lot of compute. Now, Cloudera, you guys have really pioneered the data lake, data hub concept where storage is critical. >> Yeah. >> Now, you got this compute power and machine learning, that's kind of where it comes together. Did I get that right? >> Yeah, and I think it's great that with the partnership with Intel we're able to integrate our technology directly into the hardware, which makes it so much more efficient. You're able to compute massive amounts of data in a very short amount of time, and really come up with real results. And with this partnership, specifically with Thorn and NCMEC, we're seeing that it's real impact for thousands of people last year, I think. In the 2016 impact report, Thorn said they identified over 6,000 trafficking victims, of which over 2,000 were children. Right, so that tool that they use is actually built on Cloudera. So, it's great seeing our technology put into place. >> Yeah, that's awesome. I was talking to an Intel person the other day, they have 72 cores now on a processor, on the high-end Xeons. Let's get down to some other things that you're working on. What are you doing here at the show? Do you have things that you're doing? You have a panel? >> Yeah, so at the show, at South by Southwest, we're kicking off a virtual hackathon tomorrow at our Austin offices for South by Southwest. Everyone's welcome to come. I just did the liquor order, so yes, everyone please come. (laughing) >> You just came from Austin's office, you're just coming there. >> Yeah, exactly. So we've-- >> Unlimited Red Bull, pizza, food. (laughing) >> Well, we'll be doing lots and lots tomorrow, but we're kicking that off, we have representatives from Thorn, NCMEC, Google, Intel, all on site to answer questions. That's kind of our kickoff of this month-long virtual hackathon. You don't need to be in Austin to participate, but that is one of the things that we are kicking off. >> And then on Sunday, actually here at the Intel AI Lounge we're doing a panel on AI for Good, and using artificial intelligence to solve problems. >> And we'll be broadcasting that live here on The Cube. So, folks, SiliconAngle.tv will carry that. Alison, talk about the trend that, you weren't here when we were talking about how there's now a new counterculture developing in a good way around community and social change. How real is the trend that you're starting to see these hackathons evolve from what used to be recruiting sessions to people just jamming together to meet each other. Now, you're starting to see the next level of formation where people are organizing collectively-- >> Yeah. >> To impact real issues. >> Yeah. >> Is this a real trend or where is that trend, can you speak to that? >> Sure, so from what I've seen from the hackathons what we've been seeing before was it's very company-specific. Only one company wanted to do it, and they would kind of silo themselves, right? Now, we're kind of seeing this coming together of companies that are generally competitors, but they see a great social cause and they decide that they want to band together, regardless of their differences in technology, product, et cetera, for a common good. And, so. >> Like a Thorn. >> For Thorn, you'll see a lot of competitors, so you'll see Facebook and Twitter or Google and Amazon, right? >> John: Yeah. >> And we'll see all these different competitors come together, lend their workforce to us, and have them code for one great project. >> So, you see it as a real trend. >> I do see it as a trend. I saw Thorn last year did a great one with Facebook and on-site with Facebook. This year as we started to introduce this hackathon, we decided that we wanted to do a hackathon series versus just a one-off hackathon. So we're seeing people being able to share code, contribute, work on top of other code, right, and it's very much a sharing community, so we're very excited for that. >> All right, so I got to ask you what's they culture like at Cloudera these days, as you guys prepare to go public? What's the vibe internally of the company, obviously Mike Olson, the founder, is still around, Amr's around. You guys have been growing really fast. Got your new space. What's the vibe like in Cloudera now? >> Honestly, the culture at Cloudera hasn't really changed. So, when I joined three years ago we were much smaller than we are now. But I think one thing that we're really excited about is everyone's still so collaborative, and everyone makes sure to help one another out. So, I think our common goal is really more along the lines of we're one team, and let's put out the best product we can. >> Awesome. So, what's South by Southwest mean to you this year? If you had to kind of zoom out and say, okay. What's the theme? We heard Robert Scoble earlier say it's a VR theme. We hear at Intel it's AI. So, there's a plethora of different touchpoints here. What do you see? >> Yeah, so I actually went to the opening keynote this morning, which was great. There was an introduction, and then I don't know if you realized, but Cory Booker was on as well, which is great. >> John: Yep. >> But I think a lot of what we had seen was they called out on stage that artificial intelligence is something that will be a trend for the next year. And I think that's very exciting that Intel really hit the nail on the head with the AI Lounge, right? >> Cory Booker, I'm a big fan. He's from my neighborhood, went to the same school I went to, that my family. So in Northern Valley, Old Tappan. Cory, if you're watching, retweet us, hashtag #IntelAI. So AI's there. >> AI is definitely there. >> No doubt, it's on stage. >> Yes, but I think we're also seeing a very large, just community around how can we make our community better versus let's try to go in these different silos, and just be hyper-aware of what's only in front of us, right? So, we're seeing a lot more from the community as well, just being interested in things that are not immediately in front of us, the wider, either nation, global, et cetera. So, I think that's very exciting people are stepping out of just their own little bubbles, right? And looking and having more compassion for other people, and figuring out how they can give back. >> And, of course, open source at the center of all the innovation as always. (laughing) >> I would like to think so, right? >> It is! I would testify. Machine learning is just a great example, how that's now going up into the cloud. We started to see that really being part of all the apps coming out, which is great because you guys are in the big data business. >> Alison: Yeah. >> Okay, Alison, thanks so much for taking the time. Real quick plug for your panel on Sunday here. >> Yeah. >> What are you going to talk about? >> So we're going to be talking a lot about AI for good. We're really going to be talking about the NCMEC, Thorn, Google, Intel, Cloudera partnership. How we've been able to do that, and a lot of what we're going to also concentrate on is how the everyday tech worker can really get involved and give back and contribute. I think there is generally a misconception of if there's not a program at my company, how do I give back? >> John: Yeah. >> And I think Cloudera's a shining example of how a few employees can really enact a lot of change. We went from grassroots, just a few employees, to a global program pretty quickly, so. >> And it's organically grown, which is the formula for success versus some sort of structured company program (laughing). >> Exactly, so we definitely gone from soup kitchen to strategic partnerships, and being able to donate our own time, our engineers' times, and obviously our software, so. >> Thanks for taking the time to come on our Cube. (electronic music) Now, here's John Furrier. >> Hello, and welcome to a special broadcast of Silicon Angles, the Cube. This is our flagship program. We go out to the events and extract the signal from the noise. We're here for a special broadcast, kicking off South by Southwest. This show is the center of the entertainment/media universe and we are here in the Intel AI Lounge, the hashtag Intel AI, and of course, hashtag The Cube, hashtag South by Southwest, and, again, South by Southwest, I call it the Burning Man for the tech industry, the music industry. It is where all the creative, the talented, and the innovators, the bomb throwers, the disrupters, and also the innovators building the next generation technologies. We're going to have wall-to-wall coverage, all day interviews here, and our theme this week at South by Southwest, is really powered by Intel AI, and that is, AI for social good. We're going to be unpacking all the cutting edge technology that's taking us into the next generation. What's this world look like with AI? What's this world look like with autonomous vehicles? These are significant shifts that we've never seen in the computer industry before. We're going to be breaking them down. And here to kickoff day one of our Cube coverage is, my friend, Brian Fanzo. iSocialFanz, is the founder. Great guy, young guy-- younger than me but, you know, still in the front lines. Brian, welcome to our kickoff. >> Thanks for having me. I like to be here. First time on the show was 2013, VM world. So, we were inside VM world, 2013, and now outside the Intel Lounge at South by. Pretty exciting. >> So, it's high noon here. We got our sunglasses on. High noon in Texas. I'm wearing my Ray Bans, but you have your Snapchat spectacles on. What's going on? Do you like them? Give us the update. >> Yeah, I'm actually a new user of them. I'm one who likes to jump on new technology, embrace the FOMO. I kind of waited a little bit on the specs. I also wanted to have something cool to release them with. After I got them, I decided to keep them in wraps until South by Southwest, but it's kind of fun. It's interactive. They are definitely-- now that you can buy them online, I think they're going to be seen a little bit more frequent, but here at South by, just walking down the streets, people are still stopping and saying, "Hey, take a picture of me," and, "How does it work?" I've been impressed. The quality's been pretty good, and it's really easy to use. I think battery life has a long way to go but we'll see. I think battery life in everything mobile has a long way to go. >> Well, that leads to our whole theme here. We're going to have Robert Scoble on, good friend, he's been doing a lot in Virtual Reality and AR, benpar, and a lot of scientists from Intel. Really, folks, talking about this kind of movement. There's a shift going on, user behavior shifting. You're seeing actually entrepreneurship, young companies coming out and changing the world, and not changing the world to go public and some of those vanity things around money, but really around social change, and that's our theme. You have been really prolific over the past couple years, this year in particular, going out, pounding the pavement. You've been at a zillion events. We see each other all the time. Of course, we do over a hundred events last year. You see a lot of stuff. What's the pattern that you're seeing out right now? In this new world order, there's certainly a couple key trends, and the big ones are autonomous vehicles, smart cities. Median entertainment's changing. The home, Alexa, Google Home, automation, but a paradigm shift is happening. What is your take on this? >> I think it comes down to, a lot of it, I think we've all realized we want an experience. Experience is extremely important. But what does an experience mean? And how do you make an experience stand out? I think that's one of the bigger problems today, is, with so much noise, so many things that are out there, I think a lot of people-- the idea of social good, people want to know that what they're working with, what they're working on, has a greater purpose. And I think, today's world, you're connected with no limitations, no silos, and not only being connected at all times, but how can you be connected at the right time and reach the right audience. I think technology like AI and some of the things-- especially cognitive, the idea that machines are learning with us, so it's not just machines learning and leaving the humans behind, but it's humans teaching machines, machines teaching humans, and then moving forward together. I think that's some exciting change. And it's from TV entertainment to enterprise tech, to even the social media space where I do a lot of work in. >> We're here in the Intel AI Lounge. Brian, the whole theme is here at Intel, and at South by Southwest, is real progressive thinkers, Intel's tag line is, "Your amazing starts with Intel." You start to see, even Intel, which powered the PC revolution, servers, are starting to make chips not just for machines anymore, for the Cloud, for cars. If you just think about autonomous vehicles, for instance. You think about what that does for the younger generation coming in, the computing landscape isn't about a device anymore, it's about an integrated experience, and one of the things we've been talking about on the Cube, and we're going to talk about this year, is, my vision of counterculture. >> Right. >> Every single movement, if you go look at the 60s, the computer industry was impacted by the counterculture of the 60s. You look at the PC revolution with Steve Jobs in the 80s, that was a counterculture. We're starting to see a counterculture now around new amazing new things. >> Brian: Right. >> With software, machine learning, AI-- I mean, it's mind boggling. >> Brian: It is. >> So, what is this counterculture? Do you have any thoughts on it? Do you agree, do you have any thoughts on that? >> I like to say, when Henry Ford said, that if he would've asked then what they wanted, they would have said faster horses not cars. I think today's generation has a bigger megaphone, is not afraid to say what they want, and because now, we have all of the data, they're not afraid to share that data. We're being much more transparent, allowing people to be a little bit more authentic with what they're sharing. I think we now have the opportunity to really shape new technology based on more data than we've ever had, more understanding of our consumers than we've ever had, and I like to say the consumer's no longer dumb, therefore, we have to start really pushing the boundaries. I love the tagline with awesome in it, because I think we are now creating awesome experiences and connecting things, probably in ways we would have never imagined. >> Yeah, I mean, one of the things we've been unpacking on Silicon Angle on the Cube, is this notion of all these trends that we're watching. A couple things we can talk about-- Delete Uber campaign came out of nowhere. The company's reeling because of one blog post by a woman who worked there, accusing the CEO of having a misogynistic culture. Fake news during the election. Global communication, now network, with instant sharing. We start to see these points where the voices of the internet of people is now part and disrupting traditional sacred cows, whether it's government, play, academia, so you can almost see it if you look at it and zoom out, you can say, "Woah, a new set of amazing things are happening, good and bad." >> Yeah, for sure, and I think, also, in that same realm, where now, it's kind of this idea where-- I think for the longest time, technology was taking us further away from the human condition, and we were able to be fake online, throw up a website, and really distance ourselves from the consumer and the community. And I believe now, because people are seeing through that, and the idea where people are faking profiles, we're now coming full circle where live video and a lot of these other things are saying, "Hey, we want humans, we want-- and then we want to be able to connect and come together." And I love the idea that we don't need-- a movement doesn't require a resume, doesn't require you to live in the same location. You can come together around a shared purpose, a shared passion, leveraging technology, and you can do it anywhere in the world. Especially from a mobile perspective, it's exciting to see people being able to have their voice heard, no matter where they are in the world. >> I mean, they literally-- I hate to use the phrase democratization, but that is really what's happening here, and if you look at how politics is changing and media-- the gatekeepers used to be a few parts of the world, whether it's a group of guys or a group of media companies or whatever, they were the gatekeepers. That's now leveled. You have now a leveling of that where you have these voices. So, what's happening, in my mind, is this whole AI for social good is super interesting to me because, if you think about it, the younger generation that's coming online right now and growing up into adulthood or teens is post-9/11 generation. When you think about 9/11, what that meant for our world, and now you're seeing the whole terrorist thing, these are people who are digital natives. There's a sense of, I won't say philanthropy, but societal thinking. >> And I think a part of it is, I think everyone has always wanted the ability to make a bigger impact on the world, but they also, now, I believe-- chapter three of my upcoming book is actually the future of marketing as social good, because I believe people want to know that what they're investing their money, their time in, has a greater purpose than themselves, and I think, because they're able to be connected, and we're able to expose cultures-- I mean, my daughter says good night to Alexa when she goes to bed, as if it's a human, and she's like, "Well, I got to say good night to it." It's this idea where, we're able to share, connect, and communicate-- computers are as much a part of that as humans are online, and it's an exciting movement because I think it's going to highlight and amplify the good and we're going to start to be able to drown out the noise and the bad that, before, oftentimes had a larger microphone and now, we're able to kind of equalize that. >> This is what I like about what Intel's doing. If you think about AI for social good. First of all, Intel benefits, thanks to Intel for sponsoring the Cube here, appreciate that. Plug for Intel. But if you know what they're doing under the hood, Intel makes chips. Moore's law has been one of those things that, for the folks who don't know, look it up on Google, Moore's law. Doubling the power every x-number of months, that creates really good processing power. That powers your glasses. That powers your car. The car is now a data center. The car is now an internet device. A human might have implants, chips some day. So this notion of the power, the computing power and now software's creation an amazing thing, but if you look at what you just said, it has nothing to do with computers. >> Brian: Right. >> So, computers are enabling us to do things and be connected, but if you think about that next generation of impact, it's going to come from human beings. Human beings, part of communities. And I think, if you look at the community dynamic, which has always been kind of like, oh yeah, I'm part of a community, but now, that there's intercommunication, your glasses are doing a streaming a video, we're doing a live broadcast, Twitter's out there, people can talk all over the place. You have a self-forming governance, a network. >> Which is awesome, because now, it's connecting great people no matter where you're at, you're not limited by your resume or where you grew up, and I also think there's an element here where, if you look at collaboration-- I believe collaboration is this key for the future of innovation. I think it's the idea of chips coming together with hardware and software, working together, not only in the post-product stage, but also in the innovation stage. And also, R&D Teams working together to now make things faster and smaller and able to really push the envelope. Things like, in the glasses, having sound and video, and having it connected to my phone, and transmitting with very little human input, we're now able to get perspectives that we would have never imagined, especially from just a regular person walking the streets. >> One of the things I want to get your thoughts on, because you're in the front lines, and also, I look at you, and you're not a young guy, you're an adult, but you're part of a new generation. I was talking with some folks at Stanford just last week around algorithms, and it's kind of an AI conversation, and something popped up. There is actually an issue of gender bias in algorithms. Who would have ever thought? So, now, there's kind of like algorithms for algorithms. This is kind of this AI for social good where, we don't want to actually start bringing our biases into the algorithms, so we have to always be monitoring that. But that brings up the whole point of-- Okay, we're living in a world of first time opportunities and problems and challenges. In the old days in the tech, we knew what the processes were: automated accounting software, automate this, automate some IT department, with unknown technology. And the technology would come out, like Intel and others-- now, we have unknown processes and problems, and known technology developing faster. So, what that's going to require is the human involvement, the communities to be very agile. >> Without question. Not only embrace change, but you also have to look at communities now where, I don't believe we are doing things massively different as humans today than we were years ago, we just now have more transparency and more exposure and access to all of our lives, and I think, with that becomes, as technology exposes more of our vulnerabilities, we as humans have to start to realize that people are more vulnerable and no one's perfect, and things are migrating in a different pattern. Give me that collaboration because we have to be able to trust the algorithms, there has to be that transparency there, but we also want some version of our own privacy, but I kind of live in the space where I don't think of privacy anymore. I think of things as transparently sharing, engaging, and then, hopefully, technology amplifying that and giving us the controls. >> And that's why I like how the AI for social good that Intel's doing here at South by, because it's not just the tech, it's the humanization of it, and South by Southwest represents a global culture of tech, creative tech practitioners, tech visionaries, futurists, kind of all kind of coming together. So, give us the update so far. You've been on the streets. You've been seeing folks last night. I've been on the influencers list last night on Facebook, there's a special group there, all our friends are on there. What's the update so far at South by Southwest, what's the current vibe, how do you see it going this week, what are some of the themes you see popping out of the woodwork at South by Southwest? >> I think last year was interesting. This is my third year in a row at South by, and I present and talk on a bunch of different topics, but I think last year, it was a lot about what is VR, and VR was shiny and fancy, and the conversations now seem to be, what is VR doing, what's the content look like, and where is it going and how do I get there. That's an exciting conversation because, I think, instead of it being a shiny object, it's now VR and AR and AI, how do they intertwine into our lives. The idea of interactive-- South by Southwest Interactive, really what these tools and technology are, is connecting that interactive capabilities. It's interesting to see the different car brands here. You have Intel, you have Dell, you have IBM, but then you also have some of these other brands that are trying to push the, I'd say, the startup agenda. That's exciting, because I remember, I wasn't here for Twitter when you were here for Twitter, but Meerkat, two years ago, for me, was the darling live streaming app that launched here, and it died a year later, but I'm glad to see that innovation and the startup culture is now mixing, kind of hand-in-hand with the enterprise. >> Well, I'm going to see some of my old peeps from the Web 2.0 days, and a lot of people were like, "Oh, the Web 2.0 days didn't happen," just like the bubble burst and the internet bubble, and that burst, but it all happened. Everything that was put out there, pets online, everything online went online. Everything that was promoted in Web 2.0 is happening now, so I believe that you're seeing now the absolute operationalizing, the globalization of democratization. The technology has now come with software for that democratization and now, what's exciting is, with machine learning, data sets, and all the stuff happening with the cloud technology and 5G, it's going to get faster now. >> Which is exciting, because I think real time is a powerful element, but if you're able to get multiple senses of data, interact with machines, and ultimately push that forward at the right time, I think that collaboration of machine, human, and experience at the right time is where we start pushing new innovations. AR and VR, even some of this cognitive type learning, starts hitting to mainstream, which I'm excited about because, I think, we're getting to this culture now where we look at change and we're hopefully now embracing the opportunities rather than looking and saying what you do. I think, now we're realizing no one cares what the product is, we want to know how does it impact us and why should we care. >> Brian Fanzo, new generation, a millennial, making things happen out there, checking things out.
