Jon Siegal is here as the vice president of product marketing, cubulum from Dehli MC. Good to see you again Jon. >> Great to be back as always guys! >> And I love that you brought a customer, Suzan Pickett is here. >> That's what I do, by the way. You realize that, that's my new thing. >> Suzan is the VP and director of Converged Infrastructure at US Bank. >> Thank you for having me. >> Welcome, one of my banks. I got a lease with US Bank. You guys are great. >> Thank you. >> Great to have you guys. >> Let's start with a customer, if that's okay? >> Absolutely. >> Tell us about your role, you got CI in your title that's interesting. >> I do. >> That's a relatively new trend, explain that. >> Yeah absolutely, so I've been at the bank a couple years now and my teams focus on Converged and Hyperconverged Infrastructure, delivering solutions and infrastructure as a service for our business. >> You guys have been working together for a while if I understand it Jon, right? Talk a little bit about what's happening here at the show maybe give us a quick overview of what's happening in CI and HCI in your world. >> Absolutely, so a lot going on as you saw today in Dell Tech cloud announcement. HCI was a key pillar there. Really VxRail, in particular, was featured as the simple and fast foundation for the Dell Tech cloud both as the on-prem manage version as well as, as you heard, the Data Center as a service. So really exciting to see how HCI continues to evolve and it's use cases around cloud and infrastructure as a service, as well as platform as a service as well. So a lot of exciting announcements there. In addition to that, just this past week, by the way, we also, since you mentioned CI, Converged Infrastructure, we just announced that we re-upped our agreement with Cisco, a new multiyear agreement extension to continue to innovate with Cisco on the VxBlock, which, as you know, was the pioneer in this, Converged Infrastructure space and with all the recent integrations we've done now with VMware, VxBlock as well as HCI, is really built to be a on-prem foundation for the cloud. >> Yeah so, this goes back to 2009, when Cisco and VMware and EMC got together and created this concept of Converged Infrastructure. There were other competitors in the market, but you guys kind of lead that trend, and so when you go back to that years ago, that's our storage and networking and compute, they were different parts of the organization. I presume you guys went through a similar journey. You had to put all that together. Herd some calves. And what did that do for your business? What was your journey like to CI? >> I think we're still on that journey, but I think it's also evolving as we go more Agile and more DevOps, more software-defined, we're seeing a lot more blending of the teams as well so we're creating a lot of virtual teams that encompass not just infrastructure but security, developers, networking as well and really being able to deliver that infrastructure's service, platform as a service, end-to-end provisioning for our business lines. >> Suzan, I love that story because I remember talking to, when this started, you talk to the storage group and they'd say, "Oh my gosh, you're going to take away my job." I'm like, "You know that security thing that they've been yelling at you to fix for a while? You talk about the new business apps that we need to do. These are the types of jobs that we want you to do." I heard you talk about Agile and DevOps and all these things. Talk a little bit about, what are the pressures you're facing from the business and the relationship between your group that help you to meet those now. >> Sure, well the first thing we did was we created an infrastructure automation services team and people looked at us like we're a little crazy to do that and we pull those highly, highly motivated potentials from within the organization that we already had to focus on automation and get the foundation for infrastructure as a service and get that part right. Something as basic as provisioning a virtual machine would take 12 weeks or longer and through our journey with Kubernetes today, containers, vRealize Automation Suite, on both Converge and Hyperconverge, VxFlex. We're now reducing that down to about three days and we anticipate, with a lot of our sprints and iterations, that we're going to be getting that down to less than a day within the next quarter. >> So John Furry says that automation is the killer app for infrastructure, so are you guys, are you building essentially out on infrastructure as a service platform, where people used to call it private cloud. I don't know if you use that term still. I think it's still valid. >> We do, yeah. >> How's that going? What's been the business impact of that so-called private cloud? >> We had a Business Critical Application that would often take year release cycles, more than 12 weeks to get a server, primarily focusing on physical servers, and now what we're doing is we're partnering with them with not only the business, the application folks, the developers, the middleware teams, networks, security, but also all of the infrastructure teams to deliver that faster speed to market, and so now they're down to days now to provision. They actually gave us a stat the other day that said, "By using our automation with Kubernetes on Hyperconverge VxFlex, that they were able to have cost avoidance of hiring a bunch of people to build physical servers. So that in and of itself was a huge win, but the fact that we can repurpose and releverage that automation, those workflows, the orchestration models, means that we can continue this conversation with the next business line and the next business line and keep telling that story and it's a good one. >> Jon I'd live to hear from what Suzan was saying and there's so many of the modern things that they're doing. When you look at your customer base, how are they doing on that journey? We used to always ask, in the earlier days, it was like, alright how much was I just eliminating sub-silos but pretty much doing the same apps and same processes before or have I really gone through some transformation? >> I tell you what, we've seen quite a bit of transformation in our customer base because they had to. You look at now, as you see with US Banks, they're now transforming their organization to support DevOps, right? That's an entirely new realm for them to focus on. That means they need to make infrastructure easier and simpler so we're finding that is really, I think, that's the catalyst and that they're realizing that the way to do this is let's make infrastructure as simple as possible. Infrastructure service. Make that platform as a service available so our customers can spend less, wait, our IT department can spend less time on the speeds and fees, if you will, of maintaining infrastructure, more time innovating up the stack versus down the stack, right? >> Alright Suzan, I got to ask a question Jon probably doesn't want me to ask you. You're trying to simplify, 'cause you're doing all this stuff that's not really adding value to your business, you want to do stuff that's going to make you more competitive. Well why don't you just throw all this stuff in the cloud? >> Good question and I think that eventually we will have a multicloud strategy, but it is a bank and we don't want to be in the news for a data breach and that's the real answer but also because we want to, again, lay that foundation for an on-premise, solid infrastructure as a service with service catalogs at the business. We can then drive that product taxonomy and they know that they get a good, solid product from IT and then we extend that into the cloud so as much as we can do that, and maybe there will be some cloud native apps down the road that go 100% in the public cloud. I don't have a crystal ball. I suspect there will be, but again we want to do it right and we think this is the right foundation to lay for that. >> You want to have total control over, certainly, your mission critical apps, I'm presuming, right? Maybe put some stuff up. I'm sure you have plenty of stuff in the cloud. Well why Dell EMC? >> I think it goes back to our strategic partnership. It's always been that strong partnership, that enablement, and that continuous feedback loop. We need something, we go talk to our product teams. We get that back, we get it back from our product teams, so it's not always perfect, and there are competitors out there, but at the end of the day, when we look at the Dell Technologies family and that ecosystem and our ability to integrate, iterate, automate within that family, it just helps us stream like that and standardize. >> We've heard this morning from a lot of folks. Michael Dell talked about it. Jeff Clark talked about it. Companies want to consolidate the number of suppliers, certainly infrastructure suppliers, throwing sass forget it, so many apps now. Are you seeing that? Is there pressure to consolidate the number of suppliers, or do you still have, in certain cases, where you really want to go best of breed, so-called best of breed, for some niche app, or do you want to consolidate suppliers? >> So I always want to standardize because that's going to help our automation story, but I still want best of breed, and so that's one of the primary reasons that we're standardized on Dell Technologies today. VxFlex being one of them and Converged Infrastructure being another. There are use cases for multi-vendor strategy, but again, you would look at the right solution for the right job at the right time. >> Okay Jon, that was a totally loaded question, so can you be both a portfolio company like yours and still be best of breed and if so, how so? >> Well I think what we are, we certainly are a portfolio company in the way that, but I think we have leading infrastructure, leading solutions in each case. You take things like Hyperconverge and Converge, great example of that, and I think what we see at the US Bank is that that porfolio of solutions is what's actually enabling US Bank to essentially address all other challenges, right? Whether it's the IS, whether it's the crown jewel applications that Suzan's trying to support, whether it's the DevOps that they're trying to actually build out right now. We've got best of breed solutions for each of those as well within our portfolio. And also, I would say that we're really focused on, ultimately, a portfolio with a purpose meaning that we're taking our networking, for example, portfolio, you just talk to Drew Shulkin. Together with out HCI portfolio, and we're ensuring that they work really seamlessly together so that in the case of, for example, working with, say VxRail or VxRack, we're able to automate all the networking for a HCI environment or at least 98% of it. That's really, again, taking but that's because we're best of breed and porfolio at the same time. >> Yeah so, I'm throwing all kinds of loaded questions out here, and I want to understand this because as independent observers you get Company A says this, Company B says that, but the customer's ultimately the arbiter. How do you, maybe not define, but how do you look at best of breed, what is best of breed to you? >> I look at the technology that's going to make me look good and that's going to make my teams look good and that's not just day one, that's day two and I think that's where the differentiator is as well. We've always found that Dell Technologies is there to support us. Stuff breaks, right? Your car needs oil, your tires need rotating, and it's the same with equipment in the Data Center. How those companies react and they support and they have your back when that happens, I think is the key differentiator and we always found Dell Technologies to be there for us. >> So I'm hearing the breadth, the porfolio. We haven't talked about services but I know that's a key part of it. >> Well, Suzan I hear you talking about day two. CI helped simplify that day one and then, as it matured, it worked more on the day two, and HCI even more. When you talk about the cloud solutions from Dell EMC, that cloud operating model. When you think about public cloud, I don't think about what version I'm on, it takes care of that. When I hear some of the solutions from Dell, it's getting to that model. How are they doing along that that spectrum, I guess, from the, "Okay I need to do the RCM and manage when I do the updates" to "I don't even think about it anymore." >> Sure, I think it is still something that we all care about as much as we're told we shouldn't care about it, I care. I want to make sure that we're doing the right things at the right time. I think it's a journey. I think we've come a long way in the last few years and I think that every year it gets better and as we start extending to that multicloud, obviously that's going to drive some of that solutioning as well. I think we'll continue to see improvement in that area. >> What is something that you'd like to see Jon do to make your life better? (laughs) Besides cut prices, you can't say cut prices. >> Alright, cut prices. >> Every year you cut prices. >> Let's talk about that deal. I think just continuing to be there, continuing to represent, bringing forth the products, the products team, helping us be strategic and also be very tactical. While I have this one last opportunity 'cause I don't know where we are timewise. I just want to shout out to my team. Right, so it's not just the Dell Technologies team that's bringing all this to the table, it's my team and the organization and my peer teams as well. We just keep sharing, we keep collaborating, and we keep iterating. >> Yeah Jon, one of the things, talk about collaboration, my understanding is Suzan's part of one of the user groups here. You know, big community. >> Yes. >> We always talk about at these shows. Maybe you can share that. >> Yeah so Suzan is actually a new board member for our Converge user group which has been around for several years now and she just joined a few months ago. >> I did. >> And I think that we talk about collaboration and feedback. Suzan is representing not just her own team, she's representing teams around IT around the world. And I think she's a great example of providing feedback, not just at Dell EMC directly, but to other users as well, and best practices and tips and tricks. We have a user group tomorrow at three o'clock. I think couple big executives might be there as well, so it's going to be a lot of fun. So tomorrow at three o'clock. I think it's, at least, our sixth annual that we've had here. But the user group itself, I think exemplifies as much as you've been talking about 'cause that's evolved from being what used to just be about a user group just about blocks, VxBlocks, now it's about CI, it's about HCI, it's about VxBlock, it's about Dell Tech cloud. We have VMware on the panel as well as Dell EMC so I think you see the user group has evolved with our customers and with our portfolio. >> It's a community, it's a mechanism for people to say, "How did you do that" or "How should I do this" or "How do I get my team motivated" or "How do I collaborate with security?" These are tough questions and so I think just having that network of people that can come together and ask those questions and be transparent and be authentic, that's what it's about. >> Appearance, problem-solving, sharing ideas. >> Yeah. >> You've been a Converged Infrastructure client, customer for a number of years. >> I have. >> So you've seen pre-acquisition, how has the Dell EMC merger affected your perception of the company and your relationship with them? >> I think in the last year, or the previous year, we were all waiting to see where things fell and what was going to happen, and I think now it's found it's feet, right? We're starting to see some announcements in both the Converged and the VxFlex space, and it's really starting to come together and I think that story, the Dell Technologies family story is really starting to come together where maybe in the last 12, 18 months, there was a little bit of unknown there and so, we just kind of sitting back and waiting and curious but keep doing what we're doing using that best of breed, the best practices that we have on the floor. >> Alright awesome. (upbeat music) >> Hey everyone. Welcome back to Las Vegas. The Cube is live. I can't say that enough. We are alive at AWS re:Invent 2021. Lisa Martin with Dave Nicholson. Hey Dave. >> Hey Lisa. >> Having a good day so far. >> So far, so good. >> We have an alumni back with us. We have about a hundred segments on the cube at AWS remit. We've got one of our original alumni back with us. Zaki Bajwa joins us the global head of partner solution engineers at Stripe. Zaki welcome back. >> Thank you, Lisa, thank you, Dave. Pleasure to be here. >> Lisa: Isn't it great to be back in person? >> Love it. Love it. Can't do a whiteboard virtually, you can, it's not the same. >> It's not the same and all those conversations I'm sure that you've had with partners and with customers the last couple of days that you just can't replicate that over zoom. >> Zaki: Exactly. >> So just for anyone who doesn't understand, AWS has a massive ecosystem of partners. So we'll get to talk about Stripe and AWS, but for anyone that doesn't know what Stripe is, give us the lowdown. You guys started 10 years ago. Talk to us about Stripe, the business strategy, what it's like today. >> Yeah, sure. So you guys know Stripe started 10 years ago by two brothers, John and Patrick Collison. And they've really focused on the developer and helping the developers accelerate digital commerce. Why? Cause the status quo at the time was one where a developer needed to, you know, build banking relationships with issuing banks, merchant banks, card networks, payment networks, tax liabilities, data compliance, and all of these manual processes that they had to deal with. So what Stripe aspires to do is build a complete commerce platform. Leveraging our integrated suite of products that is really allowing us to build what we call the global payments and treasury network. So if you think about the global payment and treasury network or what we call the G P T N it's meant to not only help abstract all of that complexity from a global payment infrastructure point of view, but also help move money in a simple and borderless and a programmable way just like we do in the internet. So that's the core essence of Stripe is to build this global payment treasury network to allow for money movement to happen in a simple and borderless manner. >> Simple and borderless two key things there. How has the business strategy evolved in the last 10 years and specifically in the last 20, 22 months? >> Yeah. Great question. So as you can imagine with COVID, you know, David you can order a cup of coffee or a brand new car, and that whole direct to consumer model has accelerated in COVID right. We've accelerated ourselves going to upwards of 6,000 employees. We've been able to answer or manage upwards of 170 billion API requests in the last 12 months alone. Right we deliver upwards of five nines from a availability performance point of view. That means 13 seconds of downtime or less a month. And we're doing this originally starting off for the developer David as you talked about allowing developers to deliver, you know, what I call process payments, accept payments and reconcile payments. But the evolution that you're talking about Lisa has really led to three key areas of focus that our users are requesting from us. And Stripe's first operating principle is really that user first mentality similar to the Amazons where we listen to our users and they're really asking for three key areas of focus. Number one is all around modernizing their digital commerce. So this is big enterprises coming to us and saying, whether I'm a uni lever or a Ford, how do you help me with a direct to consumer a e-commerce type platform? Number one. Secondly, is companies like Deliveroo and Lyft creating what we call marketplaces. Also think about Twitter and clubhouse, more solopreneurs entrepreneurs kind of marketplaces. Third is all around SaaS business models. So think about slack and Atlassian. That are customer vivers and accelerating the journey with us around digitizing digital commerce. So that's the first area of evolution. The second area is all around what we call embedded FinTech. So we know just like Amazon helped accelerate infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and function as a service. We're helping accelerate FinTech as a service. So we believe every company in every industry aspires to add more and more FinTech capabilities in their core services that they offer to their customers. So think about a Shopify or a Lyft they're adding more FinTech capabilities, leveraging Stripe APIs that they offer to their consumers. Likewise, when you think about a Monzo bank or a and 26, what we call Neo banks. They're creating more banking as a service component so a second area of evolution is all around FinTech as a service or embedded FinTech. And the third area of focus again, listen to our users is all around users are saying. Hey, Stripe, you have our financial data. How do you help us more with business operations and automating and optimizing our business operations? So this is revenue management, revenue reconciliation, financial reporting, all of the business processes, you and I know, code to cash, order to cash, pay to procure. Help us automate, optimize, and not just optimize, but help us create net new business models. So these are the three key areas of evolution that we've seen modernizing digital commerce, embedded FinTech, and then certainly last but not least business operations and automating that. >> And your target audience is the developers. Or are you having conversations now that are more, I mean, this is like transformative to industries and disruptive. Are you having conversations higher up in the chain? >> Great, great question. And this is the parallel with Amazon, just like Amazon started with developers, AWS. And then what up to the C-suite, if you will, we're seeing the same exact thing. Obviously our DNA is developer first making it intuitive, natural easy for developers to build on Stripe. But we're seeing more and more C-suite leaders come to us and saying, help us evolve our business model, help us modernize and digitize net new business models to get new revenue streams. So those parallel work streams are both developer mindset and C-suite led is certainly a big evolution for us. And we're looking to learn from our Amazon friends as to the success that they've had there. >> Do you have any examples of projects that developers have proposed that were at first glance, completely outlandish? Something that, you know, is there any sort of corner of the chart use case where Stripe didn't think of it, some developer came up with the idea, maybe it can't be done yet. If you have an example of that, that would be very interesting. >> Yeah, I'll give you two examples. So as I said, we're definitely a user first entity. That's our operating principle. We always think about the user. So let me go to developers and say, what are you struggling with? What are you thinking about? What are the next set of things you need from us? And a simple comment around tax started to come up and do you know in the U S there's 11,000 tax jurisdictions that you and you're selling something online have to abide to these different jurisdictions. So one of the things that we then evolved into is created a Stripe tax product, which initially users or developers were really struggling with and working on. So we created a Stripe tax product. We've done an acquisition called tax jar that helps us accelerate that journey for tax. The other one is this notion of low code that we see in the marketplace right now, where developers saying. Hey, give me more embeddables on top of the primitives that you've created on top of the APIs. So we went leveraging what our customers have already done, created things like a checkout capability, which is a simple redirect highly customized for conversion, which you can just integrate to one API. You have a full checkout capability. You can embed that into your platform, which didn't exist before and needed you to really integrate into different APIs. So all of these capabilities are what developers have really focused on and built that we've done leverage and Excel on. >> Yeah, I think between Lisa and myself, we've paid taxes in about 7,000 of those >> Lisa: Yeah, probably. >> Not 11,000 jurisdictions, but all the various sales taxes and everything else. So we're sort of familiar with it. >> I think so, so here we are, you know, on the floor at re-invent. Great, as we said to be back in person, the 10th annual, but with, as each year goes by AWS has a ecosystem of partners gets bigger and bigger. The flywheel gets, I don't know, I think faster and faster, the number of announcements that came out yesterday and today talk to us about some of the common traits that Stripe and AWS share. >> Yeah. So I've mentioned a few of them. One is certainly the user first mentality where we're listening to users. That tax example is a perfect one of how do we decide new features, new capability based on user first, Amazon does that better than anyone else. Second is that developer mindset focus on the developer. Those will be the core persona we target give you an example, Lyft, we all know Lyft. They wanted to create instant payouts for their drivers. So their developers came to us and say, our developers don't want to get paid. I'm sorry. Our drivers don't want to get paid in a week or two weeks. So we work with their developers who create a instant payout mechanism. Now in six months, over 40% of their drivers are using Stripe instant payout powered by Stripe. And that's a developer first mindset again, back to AWS. And then the third is really around the go to market. And the market opportunity is very similar. You talked about the developer persona and the C-suite very similar to Amazon. But also we're not just catering to enterprise and strategic big customers. We are just so much focused on startups, SMB, mid-market, digital native, just like Amazon is. And I would say the last parallel, which is probably the most important one is innovation. I come from enterprise software where we looked at monthly, quarterly, biannual, annual release cycles. Well, as Stripe, all of that goes out the door just like Amazon. We may have a hundred to a thousand APIs in motion at any time in alpha beta production. And just like Amazon we're iterating and releasing new innovations consistently. So I would say that's probably the most important one that we have with Amazon. >> So a lot of synergies there like deep integrated trusted partner synergies it sounds like. >> Agreed, definitely and then we're seeing this. I was going more as we are going more up market. We're seeing a demand for end to end solutions that require integrations with a CRM vendor for customer 360 with our accounting vendor for pivotal procure order to cash, billing accounting with a e-commerce company like Adobe Magento to do better econ. So more end to end solutions with these tech partners, we're working with our GSI to help deliver those end to end solutions. And certainly, but not least the dev agencies who are still sort of our core constituents that help us keep relevant with those developers. >> You mentioned this at the outset, but some things bear repeating. Can you go into a little more detail on the difference between me wanting to start up a business and take credit cards as payment 10 years ago? Let's say versus today, how much of the friction have you removed from that system? >> It is literally an hour to two hour process versus weeks and months before. >> But what are those steps? Like who would I, you mentioned this, again you mentioned this already, but the go through that, go through that again who would I have to reach out to, to make this happen? And we were talking, you know, relationships with banks, et cetera, et cetera. >> Yeah. So it starts at initiating and registering that company. So imagine you going and having to register a company today, you can do that with a Stripe Atlas product in a matter of hours, get your EIN number, get your tax jurisdictions on your registration as a Delaware entity within the U S you can be anywhere at globally and go do that within a matter of one hour. That's number one, you start there. From there, then it's a matter of embedding payment embeddables within your e-commerce platform, marketplace platform, et cetera. As you've heard us talk about seven lines of code to get payments going, you can quickly onboard accept payments, process payments, reconcile payments all within an hour. And that's just the start. But now you get into more complex use cases around marketplaces and multi-party connection. Multi-party payouts, different commission rates, different subscription models. Think about a flat tier model, a metered tier model, all of these different things that we've abstracted and allow you to just use one to three different integrations to help accelerate and use that in your digital commerce platform. So all of these different workflows have is what we've automated through our APIs. >> Dave: That's unbelievable. >> Yeah. >> It really is. >> It is unbelievable, the amount of automation and innovation that's gone on in such a short time period. What are some of the things as we kind of wrap up here that we can look forward to from stripe from a roadmap perspective, technology wise, partner wise? >> Yes. I mean, we have a slew of data you can imagine billions of billions of transactional data. And you guys know what we do with data is we're looking at fraud prevention. We're looking at, we have a product called radar that looks at fraud, we're doing acceptance, adaptive acceptance to do more AIML learned data and authorization. We're also looking at how do we feed a lot of this financial data into the right mechanisms to allow you to then create new business models on top of this, whether it's cross sell upsell to new user business capture. As well as you know, one of the things I did not talk about, which coming from a farming background is this notion of Stripe climate. Where we have upwards of 2000 companies across 37 countries that are leveraging our Stripe climate product to give back to tech advanced companies that are helping in carbon offset. And super exciting times there from an ESG environmental social governance point of view. So all of those combined is what excites us about the future at Stripe. >> Wow. The future seems unlimited. >>Earlier this week, Oracle announced the new X nine M generation of exit data platforms for its cloud at customer and legacy on prem deployments. And the company made some enhancements to its zero data loss, recovery appliance. CLRA something we've covered quite often since its announcement. We had a video exclusive with one Louisa who was the executive vice president of mission critical database technologies. At Oracle. We did that on the day of the announcement who got his take on it. And I asked Oracle, Hey, can we get some subject matter experts, some technical gurus to dig deeper and get more details on the architecture because we want to better understand some of the performance claims that Oracle is making. And with me today is Susan. Who's the vice president of product management for exit data database machine. Bob tome is the vice president of product management for exit data cloud at customer. And Tim chin is the senior director of product management for DRA folks. Welcome to this power panel and welcome to the cube. >>Thank you, Dave. >>Can we start with you? Um, Juan and I, we talked about the X nine M a that Oracle just launched a couple of days ago. Maybe you could give us a recap, some of the, what do we need to know? The, especially I'm interested in the big numbers once more so we can just understand the claims you're making around this announcement. We can dig into that. >>Absolutely. They've very excited to do that. In a nutshell, we have the world's fastest database machine for both LTP and analytics, and we made that even faster, not just simply faster, but for all LPP we made it 70% faster and we took the oil PPV ops all the way up to 27.6 million read IOPS and mind you, this is being measured at the sequel layer for analytics. We did pretty much the same thing, an 87% increase in analytics. And we broke through that one terabyte per second barrier, absolutely phenomenal stuff. Now, while all those numbers by themselves are fascinating, here's something that's even more fascinating in my mind, 80% of the product development work for extra data, X nine M was done during COVID, which means all of us were remote. And what that meant was extreme levels of teamwork between the development teams, manufacturing teams, procurement teams, software teams, the works. I mean, everybody coming together as one to deliver this product, I think it's kudos to everybody who touched this product in one way or the other extremely proud of it. >>Thank you for making that point. And I'm laughing because it's like you the same bolt of a mission-critical OLT T O LTP performance. You had the world record, and now you're saying, adding on top of that. Um, but, okay. But, so there are customers that still, you know, build the builder and they're trying to build their own exit data. What they do is they buy their own servers and storage and networking components. And I do that when I talk to them, they'll say, look, they want to maintain their independence. They don't want to get locked in Oracle, or maybe they believe it's cheaper. You know, maybe they're sort of focused on the, the, the CapEx the CFO has him in the headlock, or they might, sometimes they talk about, they want a platform that can support, you know, horizontal, uh, apps, maybe not Oracle stuff, or, or maybe they're just trying to preserve their job. I don't know, but why shouldn't these customers roll their own and why can't they get similar results just using standard off the shelf technologies? >>Great question. It's going to require a little involved answer, but let's just look at the statistics to begin with. Oracle's exit data was first productized in Delaware to the market in 2008. And at that point in time itself, we had industry leadership across a number of metrics. Today, we are at the 11th generation of exit data, and we are way far ahead than the competition, like 50 X, faster hundred X faster, right? I mean, we are talking orders of magnitude faster. How did we achieve this? And I think the answer to your question is going to lie in what are we doing at the engineering level to make these magical numbers come to, uh, for right first, it starts with the hardware. Oracle has its own hardware server design team, where we are embedding in capabilities towards increasing performance, reliability, security, and scalability down at the hardware level, the database, which is a user level process talks to the hardware directly. >>The only reason we can do this is because we own the source code for pretty much everything in between, starting with the database, going into the operating system, the hypervisor. And as I, as I just mentioned the hardware, and then we also worked with the former elements on this entire thing, the key to making extra data, the best Oracle database machine lies in that engineering, where we take the operating system, make it fit like tongue and groove into, uh, a bit with the opera, with the hardware, and then do the same with the database. And because we have got this deep insight into what are the workloads that are, that are running at any given point in time on the compute side of extra data, we can then do micromanagement at the software layers of how traffic flows are flowing through the entire system and do things like, you know, prioritize all PP transactions on a very specific, uh, you know, queue on the RDMA. >>We'll converse Ethan at be able to do smart scan, use the compute elements in the storage tier to be able to offload SQL processing. They call them the longer I used formats of data, extend them into flash, just a whole bunch of things that we've been doing over the last 12 years, because we have this deep engineering, you can try to cobble a system together, which sort of looks like an extra data. It's got a network and it's got storage, tiering compute here, but you're not going to be able to achieve anything close to what we are doing. The biggest deal in my mind, apart from the performance and the high availability is the security, because we are testing the stack top to bottom. When you're trying to build your own best of breed kind of stuff. You're not going to be able to do that because it depended on the server that had to do something and HP to do something else or Dell to do something else and a Brocade switch to do something it's not possible. We can do this, we've done it. We've proven it. We've delivered it for over a decade. End of story. For as far as I'm concerned, >>I mean, you know, at this fine, remember when Oracle purchased Sohn and I know a big part of that purchase was to get Java, but I remember saying at the time it was a brilliant acquisition. I was looking at it from a financial standpoint. I think you paid seven and a half billion for it. And it automatically, when you're, when Safra was able to get back to sort of pre acquisition margins, you got the Oracle uplift in terms of revenue multiples. So then that standpoint, it was a no brainer, but the other thing is back in the Unix days, it was like HP. Oracle was the standard. And, and in terms of all the benchmarks and performance, but even then, I'm sure you work closely with HP, but it was like to get the stuff to work together, you know, make sure that it was going to be able to recover according to your standards, but you couldn't actually do that deep engineering that you just described now earlier, Subin you, you, you, you stated that the X sign now in M you get, oh, LTP IO, IOP reads at 27 million IOPS. Uh, you got 19 microseconds latency, so pretty impressive stuff, impressive numbers. And you kind of just went there. Um, but how are you measuring these numbers versus other performance claims from your competitors? What what's, you know, are you, are you stacking the deck? Can you give you share with us there? >>Sure. So Shada incidents, we are mentioning it at the sequel layer. This is not some kind of an ion meter or a micro benchmark. That's looking at just a flash subsystem or just a persistent memory subsystem. This is measured at the compute, not doing an entire set of transactions. And how many times can you finish that? Right? So that's how it's being measured. Now. Most people cannot measure it like that because of the disparity and the number of vendors that are involved in that particular solution, right? You've got servers from vendor a and storage from vendor B, the storage network from vendor C, the operating system from vendor D. How do you tune all of these things on your own? You cannot write. I mean, there's only certain bells and whistles and knobs that are available for you to tune, but so that's how we are measuring the 19 microseconds is at the sequel layer. >>What that means is this a real world customer running a real world. Workload is guaranteed to get that kind of a latency. None of the other suppliers can make that claim. This is the real world capability. Now let's take a look at that 19 microseconds we boast and we say, Hey, we had an order of magnitude two orders of magnitude faster than everybody else. When it comes down to latency. And one things that this is we'll do our magic while it is magical. The magic is really grounded in deep engineering and deep physics and science. The way we implement this is we, first of all, put the persistent memory tier in the storage. And that way it's shared across all of the database instances that are running on the compute tier. Then we have this ultra fast hundred gigabit ethernet RDMA over converged ethernet fabric. >>With this, what we have been able to do is at the hardware level between two network interface guides that are resident on that fabric, we create paths that enable high priority low-latency communication between any two end points on that fabric. And then given the fact that we implemented persistent memory in the storage tier, what that means is with that persistent memory, sitting on the memory bus of the processor in the storage tier, we can perform it remote direct memory access operation from the compute tier to memory address spaces in the persistent memory of the storage tier, without the involvement of the operating system on either end, no context, switches, knowing processing latencies and all of that. So it's hardware to hardware, communication with security built in, which is immutable, right? So all of this is built into the hardware itself. So there's no software involved. You perform a read, the data comes back 19 microseconds, boom. End of story. >>Yeah. So that's key to my next topic, which is security because if you're not getting the OSTP involved and that's, you know, very oftentimes if I can get access to the OSTP, I get privileged. Like I can really take advantage of that as a hacker. But so, but, but before I go there, like Oracle talks about, it's got a huge percentage of the Gayety 7% of the fortune 100 companies run their mission, critical workloads on exit data. But so that's not only important to the companies, but they're serving consumer me, right. I'm going to my ATM or I'm swiping my credit card. And Juan mentioned that you use a layered security model. I just sort of inferred anyway, that, that having this stuff in hardware and not have to involve access to the OS actually contributes to better security. But can you describe this in a bit more detail? >>So yeah, what Brian was talking about was this layered security set differently. It is defense in depth, and that's been our mantra and philosophy for several years now. So what does that entail? As I mentioned earlier, we designed our own servers. We do this for performance. We also do it for security. We've got a number of features that are built into the hardware that make sure that we've got immutable areas of form where we, for instance, let me give you this example. If you take an article x86 server, just a standard x86 server, not even express in the form of an extra data system, even if you had super user privileges sitting on top of an operating system, you cannot modify the bias as a user, as a super user that has to be done through the system management network. So we put gates and protection modes, et cetera, right in the hardware itself. >>Now, of course the security of that hardware goes all the way back to the fact that we own the design. We've got a global supply chain, but we are making sure that our supply chain is protected monitored. And, uh, we also protect the last mile of the supply chain, which is we can detect if there's been any tampering of form where that's been, uh, that's occurred in the hardware while the hardware shipped from our factory to the customers, uh, docks. Right? So we, we know that something's been tampered with the moment it comes back up on the customer. So that's on the hardware. Let's take a look at the operating system, Oracle Linux, we own article the next, the entire source code. And what shipping on exit data is the unbreakable enterprise Connell, the carnal and the operating system itself have been reduced in terms of eliminating all unnecessary packages from that operating system bundle. >>When we deliver it in the form of the data, let's put some real numbers on that. A standard Oracle Linux or a standard Linux distribution has got about 5,000 plus packages. These things include like print servers, web servers, a whole bunch of stuff that you're not absolutely going to use at all on exit data. Why ship those? Because the moment you ship more stuff than you need, you are increasing the, uh, the target, uh, that attackers can get to. So on AXA data, there are only 701 packages. So compare this 5,413 packages on a standard Linux, 701 and exit data. So we reduced the attack surface another aspect on this, when we, we do our own STIG, uh, ASCAP benchmarking. If you take a standard Linux and you run that ASCAP benchmark, you'll get about a 30% pass score on exit data. It's 90 plus percent. >>So which means we are doing the heavy lifting of doing the security checks on the operating system before it even goes out to the factory. And then you layer on Oracle database, transparent data encryption. We've got all kinds of protection capabilities, data reduction, being able to do an authentication on a user ID basis, being able to log it, being able to track it, being able to determine who access the system when and log back. So it's basically defend at every single layer. And then of course the customer's responsibility. It doesn't just stop by getting this high secure, uh, environment. They have to do their own job of them securing their network perimeters, securing who has physical access to the system and everything else. So it's a giant responsibility. And as you mentioned, you know, you as a consumer going to an ATM machine and withdrawing money, you would do 200. You don't want to see 5,000 deducted from your account. And so all of this is made possible with exited and the amount of security focus that we have on the system >>And the bank doesn't want to see it the other way. So I'm geeking out here in the cube, but I got one more question for you. Juan talked about X nine M best system for database consolidation. So I, I kinda, you know, it was built to handle all LTP analytics, et cetera. So I want to push you a little bit on this because I can make an argument that, that this is kind of a Swiss army knife versus the best screwdriver or the best knife. How do you respond to that concern and how, how do you respond to the concern that you're putting too many eggs in one basket? Like, what do you tell people to fear you're consolidating workloads to save money, but you're also narrowing the blast radius. Isn't that a problem? >>Very good question there. So, yes. So this is an interesting problem, and it is a balancing act. As you correctly pointed out, you want to have the economies of scale that you get when you consolidate more and more databases, but at the same time, when something happens when hardware fails or there's an attack, you want to make sure that you have business continuity. So what we are doing on exit data, first of all, as I mentioned, we are designing our own hardware and a building in reliability into the system and at the hardware layer, that means having redundancy, redundancy for fans, power supplies. We even have the ability to isolate faulty cores on the processor. And we've got this a tremendous amount of sweeping that's going on by the system management stack, looking for problem areas and trying to contain them as much as possible within the hardware itself. >>Then you take it up to the software layer. We used our reliability to then build high availability. What that implies is, and that's fundamental to the exited architecture is this entire scale out model, our based system, you cannot go smaller than having two database nodes and three storage cells. Why is that? That's because you want to have high availability of your database instances. So if something happens to one server hardware, software, whatever you got another server that's ready to take on that load. And then with real application clusters, you can then switch over between these two, why three storage cells. We want to make sure that when you have got duplicate copies of data, because you at least want to have one additional copy of your data in case something happens to the disc that has got that only that one copy, right? So the reason we have got three is because then you can Stripe data across these three different servers and deliver high availability. >>Now you take that up to the rack level. A lot of things happen. Now, when you're really talking about the blast radius, you want to make sure that if something physically happens to this data center, that you have infrastructure that's available for it to function for business continuity, we maintain, which is why we have the maximum availability architecture. So with components like golden gate and active data guard, and other ways by which we can keep to this distant systems in sync is extremely critical for us to deliver these high availability paths that make, uh, the whole equation about how many eggs in one basket versus containing the containment of the blast radius. A lot easier to grapple with because business continuity is something which is paramount to us. I mean, Oracle, the enterprise is running on Xcel data. Our high value cloud customers are running on extra data. And I'm sure Bob's going to talk a lot more about the cloud piece of it. So I think we have all the tools in place to, to go after that optimization on how many eggs in one basket was his blast radius. It's a question of working through the solution and the criticalities of that particular instance. >>Okay, great. Thank you for that detailed soup. We're going to give you a break. You go take a breath, get a, get a drink of water. Maybe we'll come back to you. If we have time, let's go to Bob, Bob, Bob tome, X data cloud at customer X nine M earlier this week, Juan said kinda, kinda cocky. What we're bothering, comparing exit data against your cloud, a customer against outpost or Azure stack. Can you elaborate on, on why that is? >>Sure. Or you, you know, first of all, I want to say, I love, I love baby. We go south posts. You know why it affirms everything that we've been doing for the past four and a half years with clouded customer. It affirms that cloud is running that running cloud services in customers' data center is a large and important market, large and important enough that AWS felt that the need provide these, um, you know, these customers with an AWS option, even if it only supports a sliver of the functionality that they provide in the public cloud. And that's what they're doing. They're giving it a sliver and they're not exactly leading with the best they could offer. So for that reason, you know, that reason alone, there's really nothing to compare. And so we, we give them the benefit of the doubt and we actually are using their public cloud solutions. >>Another point most customers are looking to deploy to Oracle cloud, a customer they're looking for a per performance, scalable, secure, and highly available platform to deploy. What's offered their most critical databases. Most often they are Oracle databases does outposts for an Oracle database. No. Does outpost run a comparable database? Not really does outposts run Amazon's top OTP and analytics database services, the ones that are top in their cloud public cloud. No, that we couldn't find anything that runs outposts that's worth comparing against X data clouded customer, which is why the comparisons are against their public cloud products. And even with that still we're looking at numbers like 50 times a hundred times slower, right? So then there's the Azure stack. One of the key benefits to, um, you know, that customers love about the cloud that I think is really under, appreciated it under appreciated is really that it's a single vendor solution, right? You have a problem with cloud service could be I as pass SAS doesn't matter. And there's a single vendor responsible for fixing your issue as your stack is missing big here, because they're a multi-vendor cloud solution like AWS outposts. Also, they don't exactly offer the same services in the cloud that they offer on prem. And from what I hear, it can be a management nightmare requiring specialized administrators to keep that beast running. >>Okay. So, well, thanks for that. I'll I'll grant you that, first of all, granted that Oracle was the first with that same, same vision. I always tell people that, you know, if they say, well, we were first I'm like, well, actually, no, Oracle's first having said that, Bob and I hear you that, that right now, outpost is a one Datto version. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but neither did your cloud when you first launched your cloud. So let's, let's let it bake for a while and we'll come back in a couple of years and see how things compare. So if you're up for it. Yeah. >>Just remember that we're still in the oven too. Right. >>Okay. All right. Good. I love it. I love the, the chutzpah. One also talked about Deutsche bank. Um, and that, I, I mean, I saw that Deutsche bank announcement, how they're working with Oracle, they're modernizing their infrastructure around database. They're building other services around that and kind of building their own sort of version of a cloud for their customers. How does exit data cloud a customer fit in to that whole Deutsche bank deal? Is, is this solution unique to Deutsche bank? Do you see other organizations adopting clouded customer for similar reasons and use cases? >>Yeah, I'll start with that. First. I want to say that I don't think Georgia bank is unique. They want what all customers want. They want to be able to run their most important workloads. The ones today running their data center on exit eight as a non other high-end systems in a cloud environment where they can benefit from things like cloud economics, cloud operations, cloud automations, but they can't move to public cloud. They need to maintain the service levels, the performance, the scalability of the security and the availability that their business has. It has come to depend on most clouds can't provide that. Although actually Oracle's cloud can our public cloud Ken, because our public cloud does run exit data, but still even with that, they can't do it because as a bank, they're subject to lots of rules and regulations, they cannot move their 40 petabytes of data to a point outside the control of their data center. >>They have thousands of interconnected databases, right? And applications. It's like a rat's nest, right? And this is similar many large customers have this problem. How do you move that to the cloud? You can move it piecemeal. Uh, I'm going to move these apps and, you know, not move those apps. Um, but suddenly ended up with these things where some pieces are up here. Some pieces are down here. The thing just dies because of the long latency over a land connection, it just doesn't work. Right. So you can also shut it down. Let's shut it down on, on Friday and move everything all at once. Unfortunately, when you're looking at it, a state decides that most customers have, you're not going to be able to, you're going to be down for a month, right? Who can, who can tolerate that? So it's a big challenge and exited cloud a customer let's then move to the cloud without losing control of their data. >>And without unhappy having to untangle that thousands of interconnected databases. So, you know, that's why these customers are choosing X data, clouded customer. More importantly, it sets them up for the future with exited cloud at customer, they can run not just in their data center, but they could also run in public cloud, adjacent sites, giving them a path to moving some work out of the data center and ultimately into the public cloud. You know, as I said, they're not unique. Other banks are watching and some are acting and it's not just banks. Just last week. Telefonica telco in Spain announced their intent to migrate the bulk of their Oracle databases to excavate a cloud at customer. This will be the key cloud platform running. They're running in their data center to support both new services, as well as mission critical and operational systems. And one last important point exited cloud a customer can also run autonomous database. Even if customers aren't today ready to adopt this. A lot of them are interested in it. They see it as a key piece of the puzzle moving forward in the future and customers know that they can easily start to migrate to autonomous in the future as they're ready. And this of course is going to drive additional efficiencies and additional cost savings. >>So, Bob, I got a question for you because you know, Oracle's playing both sides, right? You've got a cloud, you know, you've got a true public cloud now. And, and obviously you have a huge on-premise state. When I talk to companies that don't own a cloud, uh, whether it's Dell or HPE, Cisco, et cetera, they have made, they make the point. And I agree with them by the way that the world is hybrid, not everything's going into the, to the cloud. However, I had a lot of respect for folks at Amazon as well. And they believed long-term, they'll say this, they've got them on record of saying this, that they believe long-term ultimately all workloads are going to be running in the cloud. Now, I guess it depends on how you define the cloud. The cloud is expanding and all that other stuff. But my question to you, because again, you kind of on both sides, here are our hybrid solutions like cloud at customer. Do you see them as a stepping stone to the cloud, or is cloud in your data center, sort of a continuous sort of permanent, you know, essential play >>That. That's a great question. As I recall, people debated this a few years back when we first introduced clouded customer. And at that point, some people I'm talking about even internal Oracle, right? Some people saw this as a stop gap measure to let people leverage cloud benefits until they're really ready for the public cloud. But I think over the past four and a half years, the changing the thinking has changed a little bit on this. And everyone kind of agrees that clouded customer may be a stepping stone for some customers, but others see that as the end game, right? Not every workload can run in the public cloud, not at least not given the, um, you know, today's regulations and the issues that are faced by many of these regulated industries. These industries move very, very slowly and customers are content to, and in many cases required to retain complete control of their data and they will be running under their control. They'll be running with that data under their control and the data center for the foreseeable future. >>Oh, I got another question for kind of just, if I could take a little tangent, cause the other thing I hear from the, on the, the, the on-prem don't own, the cloud folks is it's actually cheaper to run in on-prem, uh, because they're getting better at automation, et cetera. When you get the exact opposite from the cloud guys, they roll their eyes. Are you kidding me? It's way cheaper to run it in the cloud, which is more cost-effective is it one of those? It depends, Bob. >>Um, you know, the great thing about numbers is you can make, you can, you can kind of twist them to show anything that you want, right? That's a have spreadsheet. Can I, can, I can sell you on anything? Um, I think that there's, there's customers who look at it and they say, oh, on-premise sheet is cheaper. And there's customers who look at it and say, the cloud is cheaper. If you, um, you know, there's a lot of ways that you may incur savings in the cloud. A lot of it has to do with the cloud economics, the ability to pay for what you're using and only what you're using. If you were to kind of, you know, if you, if you size something for your peak workload and then, you know, on prem, you probably put a little bit of a buffer in it, right? >>If you size everything for that, you're gonna find that you're paying, you know, this much, right? All the time you're paying for peak workload all the time with the cloud, of course, we support scaling up, scaling down. We supply, we support you're paying for what you use and you can scale up and scale down. That's where the big savings is now. There's also additional savings associated with you. Don't have the cloud vendors like work. Well, we manage that infrastructure for you. You no longer have to worry about it. Um, we have a lot of automation, things that you use to either, you know, probably what used to happen is you used to have to spend hours and hours or years or whatever, scripting these things yourselves. We now have this automation to do it. We have, um, you eyes that make things ad hoc things, as simple as point and click and, uh, you know, that eliminates errors. And, and it's often difficult to put a cost on those things. And I think the more enlightened customers can put a cost on all of those. So the people that were saying it's cheaper to run on prem, uh, they, they either, you know, have a very stable workload that never changes and their environment never changes, um, or more likely. They just really haven't thought through the, all the hidden costs out there. >>All right, you got some new features. Thank you for that. By the way, you got some new features in, in cloud, a customer, a what are those? Do I have to upgrade to X nine M to, to get >>All right. So, you know, we're always introducing new features for clouded customer, but two significant things that we've rolled out recently are operator access control and elastic storage expansion. As we discussed, many organizations are using Axeda cloud a customer they're attracting the cloud economics, the operational benefits, but they're required by regulations to retain control and visibility of their data, as well as any infrastructure that sits inside their data center with operator access control, enabled cloud operations, staff members must request access to a customer system, a customer, it team grants, a designated person, specific access to a specific component for a specific period of time with specific privileges, they can then kind of view audit controls in real time. And if they see something they don't like, you know, Hey, what's this guy doing? It looks like he's, he's stealing my data or doing something I don't like, boom. >>They can kill that operators, access the session, the connections, everything right away. And this gives everyone, especially customers that need to, you know, regulate remote access to their infrastructure. It gives them the confidence that they need to use exit data cloud, uh, conduct, customer service. And, and the other thing that's new is, um, elastic storage expansion. Customers could out add additional service to their system either at initial deployment or after the fact. And this really provides two important benefits. The first is that they can right size their configuration if they need only the minimum compute capacity, but they don't need the maximum number of storage servers to get that capacity. They don't need to subscribe to kind of a fixed shape. We used to have fixed shapes, I guess, with hundreds of unnecessary database cores, just to get the storage capacity, they can select a smaller system. >>And then incrementally add on that storage. The second benefit is the, is kind of key for many customers. You are at a storage, guess what you can add more. And that way, when you're out of storage, that's really important. Now they'll get to your last part of that question. Do you need a deck, a new, uh, exit aquatic customer XIM system to get these features? No they're available for all gen two exited clouded customer systems. That's really one of the best things about cloud. The service you subscribed to today just keeps getting better and better. And unless there's some technical limitation that, you know, we, and it, which is rare, most new features are available even for the oldest cloud customer systems. >>Cool. And you can bring that in on from my, my last question for you, Bob is a, another one on security. Obviously, again, we talked to Susan about this. It's a big deal. How can customer data be secure if it's in the cloud, if somebody, other than the, their own vetted employees are managing the underlying infrastructure, is is that a concern you hear a lot and how do you handle that? >>You know, it's, it's only something because a lot of these customers, they have big, you know, security people and it's their job to be concerned about that kind of stuff. And security. However, is one of the biggest, but least appreciate appreciated benefits of cloud cloud vendors, such as Oracle hire the best and brightest security experts to ensure that their clouds are secure. Something that only the largest customers can afford to do. You're a small, small shop. You're not going to be able to, you know, hire some of this expertise. So you're better off being in the cloud. Customers who are running in the Oracle cloud can also use articles, data, safe tool, which we provide, which basically lets you inspect your databases, insurance. Sure that everything is locked down and secure and your data is secure. But your question is actually a little bit different. >>It was about potential internal threats to company's data. Given the cloud vendor, not the customer's employees have access to the infrastructure that sits beneath the databases and really the first and most important thing we do to protect customers' data is we encrypt that database by default. Actually Subin listed a whole laundry list of things, but that's the one thing I want to point out. We encrypt your database. It's, you know, it's, it's encrypted. Yes. It sits on our infrastructure. Yes. Our operations persons can actually see those data files sitting on the infrastructure, but guess what? They can't see the data. The data is encrypted. All they see as kind of a big encrypted blob. Um, so they can't access the data themselves. And you know, as you'd expect, we have very tight controls over operations access to the infrastructure. They need to securely log in using mechanisms by stuff to present, prevent unauthorized access. >>And then all access is logged and suspicious. Activities are investigated, but that still may not be enough for some customers, especially the ones I mentioned earlier, the regulated industries. And that's why we offer app operator access control. As I mentioned, that gives customers complete control over the access to the infrastructure. The, when the, what ops can do, how long can they do it? Customers can monitor in real time. And if they see something they don't like they stop it immediately. Lastly, I just want to mention Oracle's data ball feature. This prevents administrators from accessing data, protecting data from road operators, robot, world operations, whether they be from Oracle or from the customer's own it staff, this database option. A lot of ball is sorry. Database ball data vault is included when running a license included service on exited clouded customer. So basically to get it with the service. Got it. >>Hi Tom. Thank you so much. It's unbelievable, Bob. I mean, we've got a lot to unpack there, but uh, we're going to give you a break now and go to Tim, Tim chin, zero data loss, recovery appliance. We always love that name. The big guy we think named it, but nobody will tell us, but we've been talking about security. There's been a lot of news around ransomware attacks. Every industry around the globe, any knucklehead with, uh, with a high school diploma could become a ransomware attack or go in the dark web, get, get ransomware as a service stick, a, put a stick in and take a piece of the VIG and hopefully get arrested. Um, with, when you think about database, how do you deal with the ransomware challenge? >>Yeah, Dave, um, that's an extremely important and timely question. Um, we are hearing this from our customers. We just talk about ha and backup strategies and ransomware, um, has been coming up more and more. Um, and the unfortunate thing that these ransoms are actually paid, um, uh, in the hope of the re you know, the, uh, the ability to access the data again. So what that means it tells me is that today's recovery solutions and processes are not sufficient to get these systems back in a reliable and timely manner. Um, and so you have to pay the ransom, right, to get, uh, to get the, even a hope of getting the data back now for databases. This can have a huge impact because we're talking about transactional workloads. And so even a compromise of just a few minutes, a blip, um, can affect hundreds or even thousands of transactions. This can literally represent hundreds of lost orders, right? If you're a big manufacturing company or even like millions of dollars worth of, uh, financial transactions in a bank. Right. Um, and that's why protecting databases at a transaction level is especially critical, um, for ransomware. And that's a huge contrast to traditional backup approaches. Okay. >>So how do you approach that? What do you, what do you do specifically for ransomware protection for the database? >>Yeah, so we have the zero data loss recovery appliance, which we announced the X nine M generation. Um, it is really the only solution in the market, which offers that transaction level of protection, which allows all transactions to be recovered with zero RPO, zero again, and this is only possible because Oracle has very innovative and unique technology called real-time redo, which captures all the transactional changes from the databases by the appliance, and then stored as well by the appliance, moreover, the appliance validates all these backups and reading. So you want to make sure that you can recover them after you've sent them, right? So it's not just a file level integrity check on a file system. That's actual database level of validation that the Oracle blocks and the redo that I mentioned can be restored and recovered as a usable database, any kind of, um, malicious attack or modification of that backup data and transmit that, or if it's even stored on the appliance and it was compromised would be immediately detected and reported by that validation. >>So this allows administrators to take action. This is removing that system from the network. And so it's a huge leap in terms of what customers can get today. The last thing I just want to point out is we call our cyber vault deployment, right? Um, a lot of customers in the industry are creating what we call air gapped environments, where they have a separate location where their backup copies are stored physically network separated from the production systems. And so this prevents ransomware for possibly infiltrating that last good copy of backups. So you can deploy recovery appliance in a cyber vault and have it synchronized at random times when the network's available, uh, to, to keep it in sync. Right. Um, so that combined with our transaction level zero data loss validation, it's a nice package and really a game changer in protecting and recovering your databases from modern day cyber threats. >>Okay, great. Thank you for clarifying that air gap piece. Cause I, there was some confusion about that. Every data protection and backup company that I know as a ransomware solution, it's like the hottest topic going, you got newer players in, in, in recovery and backup like rubric Cohesity. They raised a ton of dough. Dell has got solutions, HPE just acquired Zerto to deal with this problem. And other things IBM has got stuff. Veem seems to be doing pretty well. Veritas got a range of, of recovery solutions. They're sort of all out there. What's your take on these and their strategy and how do you differentiate? >>Yeah, it's a pretty crowded market, like you said. Um, I think the first thing you really have to keep in mind and understand that these vendors, these new and up and coming, um, uh, uh, vendors start in the copy data management, we call CDN space and they're not traditional backup recovery designed are purpose built for the purpose of CDM products is to provide these fast point in time copies for test dev non-production use, and that's a viable problem and it needs a solution. So you create these one time copy and then you create snapshots. Um, after you apply these incremental changes to that copy, and then the snapshot can be quickly restored and presented as like it's a fully populated, uh, file. And this is all done through the underlying storage of block pointers. So all of this kind of sounds really cool and modern, right? It's like new and upcoming and lots of people in the market doing this. Well, it's really not that modern because we've, we know storage, snapshot technologies has been around for years. Right. Um, what these new vendors have been doing is essentially repackaging the old technology for backup and recovery use cases and having sort of an easier to use automation interface wrapped around it. >>Yeah. So you mentioned a copy data management, uh, last year, active FIO. Uh, they started that whole space from what I recall at one point there, they value more than a billion dollars. They were acquired by Google. Uh, and as I say, they kind of created that, that category. So fast forward a little bit, nine months a year, whatever it's been, do you see that Google active FIO offer in, in, in customer engagements? Is that something that you run into? >>We really don't. Um, yeah, it was really popular and known some years ago, but we really don't hear about it anymore. Um, after the acquisition, you look at all the collateral and the marketing, they are really a CDM and backup solution exclusively for Google cloud use cases. And they're not being positioned as for on premises or any other use cases outside of Google cloud. That's what, 90, 90 plus percent of your market there that isn't addressable now by Activia. So really we don't see them in any of our engagements at this time. >>I want to come back and push it a little bit, uh, on some of the tech that you said, it's kind of really not that modern. Uh, I mean it's, if they certainly position it as modern, a lot of the engineers who are building there's new sort of backup and recovery capabilities came from the hyperscalers, whether it's copy data management, you know, the bot mock quote, unquote modern backup recovery, it's kind of a data management, sort of this nice all in one solution seems pretty compelling. How does recovery clients specifically stack up? You know, a lot of people think it's a niche product for, for really high end use cases. Is that fair? How do you see a town? >>Yeah. Yeah. So it's, I think it's so important to just, you know, understand, again, the fundamental use of this technology is to create data copies for test W's right. Um, and that's really different than operational backup recovery in which you must have this ability to do full and point in time recoverability in any production outage or Dr. Situation. Um, and then more importantly, after you recover and your applications are back in business, that performance must continue to meet servers levels as before. And when you look at a CDM product, um, and you restore a snapshot and you say with that product and the application is brought up on that restored snapshot, what happens or your production application is now running on actual read rideable snapshots on backup storage. Remember they don't restore all the data back to the production, uh, level stores. They're restoring it as a snapshot okay. >>Onto their storage. And so you have a huge difference in performance. Now running these applications where they instantly recovered, if you will database. So to meet these true operational requirements, you have to fully restore the files to production storage period. And so recovery appliance was first and foremost designed to accomplish this. It's an operational recovery solution, right? We accomplish that. Like I mentioned, with this real-time transaction protection, we have incremental forever backup strategies. So that you're just taking just the changes every day. And you, you can create these virtual full backups that are quickly restored, fully restored, if you will, at 24 terabytes an hour. And we validate and document that performance very clearly in our website. And of course we provide that continuous recovery validation for all the backups that are stored on the system. So it's, um, it's a very nice, complete solution. >>It scales to meet your demands, hundreds of thousands of databases, you know, it's, um, you know, these CDM products might seem great and they work well for a few databases, but then you put a real enterprise load and these hundreds of databases, and we've seen a lot of times where it just buckles, you know, it can't handle that kind of load in that, uh, in that scale. Uh, and, and this is important because customers read their marketing and read the collateral like, Hey, instant recovery. Why wouldn't I want that? Well, it's, you know, nicer than it looks, you know, it always sounds better. Right. Um, and so we have to educate them and about exactly what that means for the database, especially backup recovery use cases. And they're not really handled well, um, with their products. >>I know I'm like way over. I had a lot of questions on this announcement and I was gonna, I was gonna let you go, Tim, but you just mentioned something that, that gave me one more question if I may. So you talked about, uh, supporting hundreds of thousands of databases. You petabytes, you have real world use cases that, that actually leverage the, the appliance in these types of environments. Where does it really shine? >>Yeah. Let me just give you just two real quick ones. You know, we have a company energy transfer, the major natural gas and pipeline operator in the U S so they are a big part of our country's critical infrastructure services. We know ransomware, and these kinds of threats are, you know, are very much viable. We saw the colonial pipeline incident that happened, right? And so the attack, right, critical services while energy transfer was running, lots of databases and their legacy backup environments just couldn't keep up with their enterprise needs. They had backups taking like, well, over a day, they had restores taking several hours. Um, and so they had problems and they couldn't meet their SLS. They moved to the recovery appliance and now they're seeing backwards complete with that incremental forever in just 15 minutes. So that's like a 48 times improvement in backup time. >>And they're also seeing restores completing in about 30 minutes, right. Versus several hours. So it's a, it's a huge difference for them. And they also get that nice recovery validation and monitoring by the system. They know the health of their enterprise at their fingertips. The second quick one is just a global financial services customer. Um, and they have like over 10,000 databases globally and they, they really couldn't find a solution other than throw more hardware kind of approach to, uh, to fix their backups. Well, this, uh, not that the failures and not as the issues. So they moved to recovery appliance and they saw their failed backup rates go down for Matta plea. They saw four times better backup and restore performance. Um, and they have also a very nice centralized way to monitor and manage the system. Uh, real-time view if you will, that data protection health for their entire environment. Uh, and they can show this to the executive management and auditing teams. This is great for compliance reporting. Um, and so they finally done that. They have north of 50 plus, um, recovery appliances a day across that on global enterprise. >>Love it. Thank you for that. Um, uh, guys, great power panel. We have a lot of Oracle customers in our community and the best way to, to help them is to, I get to ask you a bunch of questions and get the experts to answer. So I wonder if you could bring us home, maybe you could just sort of give us the, the top takeaways that you want to your customers to remember in our audience to remember from this announcement. >>Sure, sorry. Uh, I want to actually pick up from where Tim left off and talk about a real customer use case. This is hot off the press. One of the largest banks in the United States, they decided to, that they needed to update. So performance software update on 3000 of their database instances, which are spanning 68, exited a clusters, massive undertaking, correct. They finished the entire task in three hours, three hours to update 3000 databases and 68 exited a clusters. Talk about availability, try doing this on any other infrastructure, no way anyone's going to be able to achieve this. So that's on terms of the availability, right? We are engineering in all of the aspects of database management, performance, security availability, being able to provide redundancy at every single level is all part of the design philosophy and how we are engineering this product. And as far as we are concerned, the, the goal is for forever. >>We are just going to continue to go down this path of increasing performance, increasing the security aspect of the, uh, of the infrastructure, as well as our Oracle database and keep going on this. You know, this, while these have been great results that we've delivered with extra data X nine M the, the journey is on and to our customers. The biggest advantage that you're going to get from the kind of performance metrics that we are driving with extra data is consolidation consolidate more, move, more database instances onto the extended platform, gain the benefits from that consolidation, reduce your operational expenses, reduce your capital expenses. They use your management expenses, all of those, bring it down to accelerator. Your total cost of ownership is guaranteed to go down. Those are my key takeaways, Dave >>Guys, you've been really generous with your time. And I think the answer to your question is going to lie in what are we doing at the engineering And as I, as I just mentioned the hardware, and then we also worked with the former elements on in the storage tier to be able to offload SQL processing. you know, make sure that it was going to be able to recover according to your standards, the storage network from vendor C, the operating system from vendor D. How do you tune all of these None of the other suppliers can make that claim. remote direct memory access operation from the compute tier to And Juan mentioned that you use a layered security model. that are built into the hardware that make sure that we've got immutable areas of form Now, of course the security of that hardware goes all the way back to the fact that we own the design. Because the moment you ship more stuff than you need, you are increasing going to an ATM machine and withdrawing money, you would do 200. And the bank doesn't want to see it the other way. economies of scale that you get when you consolidate more and more databases, but at the same time, So if something happens to one server hardware, software, whatever you the blast radius, you want to make sure that if something physically happens We're going to give you a break. of the functionality that they provide in the public cloud. you know, that customers love about the cloud that I think is really under, appreciated it under I always tell people that, you know, if they say, well, we were first I'm like, Just remember that we're still in the oven too. Do you see other organizations adopting clouded customer for they cannot move their 40 petabytes of data to a point outside the control of their data center. Uh, I'm going to move these apps and, you know, not move those apps. They see it as a key piece of the puzzle moving forward in the future and customers know that they can You've got a cloud, you know, you've got a true public cloud now. not at least not given the, um, you know, today's regulations and the issues that are When you get the exact opposite from the cloud guys, they roll their eyes. the cloud economics, the ability to pay for what you're using and only what you're using. Welcome Scott Mullins, the worldwide financial services business development leader at AWS. Scott. Welcome back. Great to have you joining us, >>Lisa. It's great to be back on the cube and to be visiting with you today from virtual re-invent 2020. >>Yes. Reinventing reinvent. The last show that I got to host in-person for the cube was reinvent last year. And here we have this three week virtual event that started last week. So lots more even going on. I think I even saw a hundred thousand or so registered, so massive event, lots of news. So walk us through some of the highlights that have been announced at reinvent this year and some of the things that you're seeing the most interest from customers in. >>Well, I think one of the big highlights is 500,000 registrants that are reinvented 50,000 attendees last year to reinvent or 50,000 or so to 500,000 re registered for the event. So that's, that's, that's worth talking about in its own. Right. But I think, you know, one of the things, and you mentioned this, you know, more re-invent three weeks, uh, this year, as opposed to the four days that we normally spend in Las Vegas together, physically, when you do, when you do it digitally, you have the ability to actually include more things and more leaders talking about things. And so when we think about the announcements that are having impacts, uh, with financial services customers specifically I'd point to a couple of things and, you know, they're obviously gonna mention Andy's keynote, but there's going to be some things that you might go wait a minute. >>I didn't even see that announcement. Uh, and then maybe I could point you and the viewers to some other, other, um, keynotes or some other sessions that were announced. So obviously I think, uh, first and foremost in Andy's keynote, uh, hybrid, uh, was something that was a very, uh, big focus for him and I for a very long time, we've had the messaging of the right tool for the right job when it comes to any of your services. I think you could alter that today to say it's the right tool for the right job at the right time and in the right place. That makes sense for you and especially for financial institutions. Um, you could look at the announcements around containers, the announcements around Amazon EKS, distro, Amazon EKS, anywhere, and then also Amazon ECS anywhere, which allows our customers to actually, uh, put AWS container technology anywhere they would like to put it. >>You could look also at the additions of the one you and two you form factors to outposts. So no longer do you have to do the, the, the large for you, uh, foreign factor for outposts, smaller outposts for smaller spaces, uh, that particular will play well in the financial service industry. You may not have necessarily as much room for a full cabinet. You could also look from the hybrid perspective in the announcement we made, um, around red hat OpenShift on AWS, all of are giving customers the ability to choose how they actually want to deploy, um, and pursue a hybrid. I'd also point to some announcements we made around management and governance in the financial services, industry governance, uh, is a very important topic. Uh, we announced the management and government lens for the AWS well architected, um, uh, program, uh, that is focused on breath practices for evolving governance for the cloud. >>It has recommended combination of AWS services integrations with our partner network and vetted reference architectures and guidance for addressing regulatory obligations as well. I'd also point to some things we made around audits. I was specifically in Steve Smith's, um, session today, he talked about AWS audit manager. That's a new tool for continually assessing areas and environments for controls or risk compliance. That includes prebuilt compliance frameworks for things like PCI DSS and GDPR, uh, two things that are very important in the financial services industry and last, but certainly not least I'd point to the announcement around the AWS audit Academy. This is training for auditors to actually be able to audit clouds from an agnostic perspective. Any cloud, not specifically AWS that's tree, uh, digital training to do that. And then also an instructor led course specifically on how to audit AWS. So some very key announcements, both from the standpoint of services, uh, as well as additional layers of helping customers in the financial services industry in regulated industries actually use our services. >>So typical, re-invent typical in a lot of news, a lot of announcements, the 500,000 Mark in terms of registering. I hadn't heard that. That's amazing. Let's talk that this has been an Andy. Jassy had an exclusive with John furrier just a couple of weeks ago before. I think it was last week, actually. And we've been talking about this acceleration of digital business transformation because of COVID we've been talking about it, the entire pandemic on the virtual cube, talking about how companies it's really about right now, surviving and thriving to be able to go forward and companies that haven't accelerated are probably in some trouble. Talk to me about how AWS has been working with your financial services customers to help them pivot and move to the cloud faster, really to not just help them survive now, but thrive in the long-term. >>Yeah. Immediately when COVID hit and it hit at different times in different, in different parts of the world. Immediately when COVID hit, we saw the conversation that we were having turning from, Hey, what's my digital strategy to immediately, what are my digital capabilities? And what that really means is what do I have the ability to do tomorrow? Because tomorrow is going to really matter. I don't have necessarily the time to plan for the next several quarters or the next several years, what can I do tomorrow to, um, really, uh, support my, my own workforce and support my own customers and the obligations I have as a financial institution. The first thing we saw people do was to try and make sure that those who financial services work can work. You can look at the adoption of Amazon workspaces, as well as our, uh, Amazon connect, uh, call centers as a service. >>As two examples there at the RBL bank in India was able to move to Amazon workspaces in just 10 days to enable its teams to actually work remotely from home. When they couldn't come into the office, you can look at Barclays. Barclays is actually a presenter at re-invent this year. They'll have a session on how they use Amazon connect, which again is our call center as a service offering to enable 25,000 contacts and our agents to work from home when they can no longer work out of the, out of their traditional contact center. The second thing we saw a financial institutions joining was making sure that customer engagements could still be meaningful when digital was the only option, um, specifically here in the U S you could look at the work that each of us did with FinTech companies like biz two X or fins Zack, or BlueVine Stripe and cabbage in support of the care act in the U S you might remember that the cares act, um, hasn't provisions for funding for small businesses. >>This small business administration had a program called the paycheck protection program, and those organizations were active in providing funding, uh, to small businesses. Uh, through that program. I'll give you an example of cabbage cabbage had previously not been an SBA lender, um, but they were able to, in two weeks build a fully automated system for small businesses to access PPP funding using Amazon text track, to extract information from documentation that those folks submitted to get alone. That reduced approval times from multiple days to about a median of four hours to actually get approval, to get funding through the PPP program. And then just four months cabbage became the second largest PPP lender. They lent over $7 billion in funding, which was twice the amount of funding that they went last year in 2019 loans. So we were happy to support organizations like cabbage and those other FinTech companies, as they help small businesses in the U S get access to funding, uh, during this critical time. >>And as we know, as you said, critical time, but really life or death for a lot of businesses. And as we continue to go through these ways, but it's interesting that you talked about that the speed of facilitation that during such unprecedented times, AWS and this massive machine was able to continue moving at full speed ahead and helping those customers to pivot. You talked about the cloud connect. I had a conversation with a guest on the queue last week about that. And, and I now think about if I have to call in a contact center and that person might be from home. So, you know, we're fortunate that the cloud computing technology and people like you and AWS, or are able to power that because it's, it's literally essential, which is probably one of the words of the year, but being able to keep the machinery going and innovate at the same time has been, make or break for a lot of businesses. >>Absolutely. And you, you look at, you know, kind of one of the last year is that I'll point to is, um, financial institutions. Uh, anti-virus, we're were very much focused on making sure that that cannot fail, that they scaled. And so you can look at the work we did with, uh, with the, with FINRA FINRA is the primary capital markets regulator here in the U S and on a daily basis frame or processes about 400 billion market events on every night to do surveillance on our markets, that when COVID hit, we had unprecedented volume and volatility in the market. And FINRA was, was, um, looking at processing, uh, anywhere from two to three times, their normal daily market volumes that's anywhere from 800 billion market events to 1.2 trillion a night. And if you look at how they were able to scale, they're actually able to scale up compute resources in AWS. We're on a nightly basis. They're able to automatically turn on and off up to a hundred thousand compute nodes in a single day. That automatic ability to scale is, is the power you're talking about. Being able to actually turn things up when you needed it and turn things down when you, when you don't need it based on the volumes. >>Well, and that's going to be something key going forward. As we know that there will be one thing I think that I always say we can count on right now is uncertainty and continued uncertainty, but we've also seen I'm calling them COVID catalysts. You know, the, what you talked about with cabbage, for example, and how that business pivoted quickly, because of the power of cloud computing and emerging technologies, what are some of the things that you think as we go into 2021 in the financial services arena, what are some of the big tech trends that you think were maybe born during COVID that are going to be critical going forward? >>Well, you know, you, you, you had Melanie Frank from capital one on cube a couple of days ago, and she was talking about, you know, their shift to cloud and what that's really enabled, and it, and she kind of sums it up nicely. She says, look, we want to give our customers experience that are real time, and that are intelligent. And you just can't do that with legacy technology. That's sitting in, you know, kind of a legacy data center. And so I think that's going to be kind of the, the, the all encompassing statement for what's happening in the financial services industry. As I mentioned, you know, organizations overnight said, okay, wait a minute, let's take that strategy. And then let's put it aside. Let's talk about capabilities. What can we do? And I think, you know, necessity is the mother of invention. Um, and when you're faced with limitations and challenges, like we all have been faced with around the world and not just in the financial services industry, it, it breeds, um, invention and the, and the desire and the need to actually meet those challenges head on, in very engineered of ways. >>And I think you're going to see more invention and specifically more invention from the established players in the financial services industry. Cloud use is not just experimental on the edges anymore. You're going to see more organizations coming out of COVID. Um, having had those experiences where they actually stood up a context center and scaled it. And, and just a matter of a few days to, to thousands of agents, you're going to find, um, organizations saying, wait a minute, we, we can do remote work. We could, we have access to things like Amazon workspaces. So I think you're, you're gonna, you're going to see that, uh, be a, be a trend. I think you're also gonna see, um, w what Lori beer said in the keynote with Andy, you know, she, she made a very, very astute statement, and I don't know if people caught it, cause it's kind of neat in the middle of her conversation. >>She said, look, we're trying to infuse analytics into everything that we do at JP Morgan. I think you're going to see more and more financial institutions looking to do that, to actually leverage the power of analytics, to power everything we do as a financial institution. So I think those, those are a couple of things that you're going to see. Um, and then, you know, looking, uh, you know, kind of around the corner, I think you're going to continue to see more re-invention within the industry. And what I mean by that is you've seen many financial institutions over the last week, uh, with, uh, re-invent making announcements, you saw bank and we towel saying, Hey, look, we are completely transforming ourselves with AWS. Uh, just a few weeks before we even saw standard charter, the same thing HSBC said, the same thing, global payments earlier in the year said the same thing. And you're going to see more and more organizations coming out and talking about these strategic decisions to reinvent everything that they do to make the financial systems of the world work. And so we're really pleased to be partnering with those organizations to make those transformations possible. We're seeing a lot of invention within the industry, and we're very pleased to be a part of the reinvention of the financial systems around the world. >>It's interesting to hear that you, you see, even the JP Morgan, some of those legacy, big houses are going to be really pivoting. They have to, to be competitive and to be able to utilize analytics, to deliver those real-time services. Because as we all know, as consumers, our patients is wearing thin these days, but I agree with you. I think there's a lot of opportunity there that innovation is exciting and there will have to be reinvention of entire industries, but I think there's a lot of silver linings there. Scott. I wish we had more time, cause I know we could keep talking, but thank you for sharing your insights on this reinvented reinvent this year. >>I appreciate it. Thank you, Lisa. In this episode, we're gonna learn more about what I owe Tahoe is doing in the field of adaptive data governance how it can help achieve business outcomes and mitigate data security risks. I'm Lisa Martin, and I'm joined by a J. Bihar on the CEO of Iot Tahoe and Lester Waters, the CEO of Bio Tahoe. Gentlemen, it's great to have you on the program. >>Thank you. Lisa is good to be back. >>Great. Staley's >>likewise very socially distant. Of course as we are. Listen, we're gonna start with you. What's going on? And I am Tahoe. What's name? Well, >>I've been with Iot Tahoe for a little over the year, and one thing I've learned is every customer needs air just a bit different. So we've been working on our next major release of the I O. Tahoe product. But to really try to address these customer concerns because, you know, we wanna we wanna be flexible enough in order to come in and not just profile the date and not just understand data quality and lineage, but also to address the unique needs of each and every customer that we have. And so that required a platform rewrite of our product so that we could, uh, extend the product without building a new version of the product. We wanted to be able to have plausible modules. We also focused a lot on performance. That's very important with the bulk of data that we deal with that we're able to pass through that data in a single pass and do the analytics that are needed, whether it's, uh, lineage, data quality or just identifying the underlying data. And we're incorporating all that we've learned. We're tuning up our machine learning we're analyzing on MAWR dimensions than we've ever done before. We're able to do data quality without doing a Nen initial rejects for, for example, just out of the box. So I think it's all of these things were coming together to form our next version of our product. We're really excited by it, >>So it's exciting a J from the CEO's level. What's going on? >>Wow, I think just building on that. But let's still just mentioned there. It's were growing pretty quickly with our partners. And today, here with Oracle are excited. Thio explain how that shaping up lots of collaboration already with Oracle in government, in insurance, on in banking and we're excited because we get to have an impact. It's real satisfying to see how we're able. Thio. Help businesses transform, Redefine what's possible with their data on bond. Having I recall there is a partner, uh, to lean in with is definitely helping. >>Excellent. We're gonna dig into that a little bit later. Let's let's go back over to you. Explain adaptive data governance. Help us understand that >>really adaptive data governance is about achieving business outcomes through automation. It's really also about establishing a data driven culture and pushing what's traditionally managed in I t out to the business. And to do that, you've got to you've got Thio. You've got to enable an environment where people can actually access and look at the information about the data, not necessarily access the underlying data because we've got privacy concerns itself. But they need to understand what kind of data they have, what shape it's in what's dependent on it upstream and downstream, and so that they could make their educated decisions on on what they need to do to achieve those business outcomes. >>Ah, >>lot of a lot of frameworks these days are hardwired, so you can set up a set of business rules, and that set of business rules works for a very specific database and a specific schema. But imagine a world where you could just >>say, you >>know, the start date of alone must always be before the end date of alone and having that generic rule, regardless of the underlying database and applying it even when a new database comes online and having those rules applied. That's what adaptive data governance about I like to think of. It is the intersection of three circles, Really. It's the technical metadata coming together with policies and rules and coming together with the business ontology ease that are that are unique to that particular business. And this all of this. Bringing this all together allows you to enable rapid change in your environment. So it's a mouthful, adaptive data governance. But that's what it kind of comes down to. >>So, Angie, help me understand this. Is this book enterprise companies are doing now? Are they not quite there yet. >>Well, you know, Lisa, I think every organization is is going at its pace. But, you know, markets are changing the economy and the speed at which, um, some of the changes in the economy happening is is compelling more businesses to look at being more digital in how they serve their own customers. Eh? So what we're seeing is a number of trends here from heads of data Chief Data Officers, CEO, stepping back from, ah, one size fits all approach because they've tried that before, and it it just hasn't worked. They've spent millions of dollars on I T programs China Dr Value from that data on Bennett. And they've ended up with large teams of manual processing around data to try and hardwire these policies to fit with the context and each line of business and on that hasn't worked. So the trends that we're seeing emerge really relate. Thio, How do I There's a chief data officer as a CEO. Inject more automation into a lot of these common tax. Andi, you know, we've been able toc that impact. I think the news here is you know, if you're trying to create a knowledge graph a data catalog or Ah, business glossary. And you're trying to do that manually will stop you. You don't have to do that manually anymore. I think best example I can give is Lester and I We we like Chinese food and Japanese food on. If you were sitting there with your chopsticks, you wouldn't eat the bowl of rice with the chopsticks, one grain at a time. What you'd want to do is to find a more productive way to to enjoy that meal before it gets cold. Andi, that's similar to how we're able to help the organizations to digest their data is to get through it faster, enjoy the benefits of putting that data to work. >>And if it was me eating that food with you guys, I would be not using chopsticks. I would be using a fork and probably a spoon. So eso Lester, how then does iota who go about doing this and enabling customers to achieve this? >>Let me, uh, let me show you a little story have here. So if you take a look at the challenges the most customers have, they're very similar, but every customers on a different data journey, so but it all starts with what data do I have? What questions or what shape is that data in? Uh, how is it structured? What's dependent on it? Upstream and downstream. Um, what insights can I derive from that data? And how can I answer all of those questions automatically? So if you look at the challenges for these data professionals, you know, they're either on a journey to the cloud. Maybe they're doing a migration oracle. Maybe they're doing some data governance changes on bits about enabling this. So if you look at these challenges and I'm gonna take you through a >>story here, E, >>I want to introduce Amanda. Man does not live like, uh, anyone in any large organization. She's looking around and she just sees stacks of data. I mean, different databases, the one she knows about, the one she doesn't know about what should know about various different kinds of databases. And a man is just tasking with understanding all of this so that they can embark on her data journey program. So So a man who goes through and she's great. I've got some handy tools. I can start looking at these databases and getting an idea of what we've got. Well, as she digs into the databases, she starts to see that not everything is as clear as she might have hoped it would be. You know, property names or column names, or have ambiguous names like Attribute one and attribute to or maybe date one and date to s Oh, man is starting to struggle, even though she's get tools to visualize. And look what look at these databases. She still No, she's got a long road ahead. And with 2000 databases in her large enterprise, yes, it's gonna be a long turkey but Amanda Smart. So she pulls out her trusty spreadsheet to track all of her findings on what she doesn't know about. She raises a ticket or maybe tries to track down the owner to find what the data means. And she's tracking all this information. Clearly, this doesn't scale that well for Amanda, you know? So maybe organization will get 10 Amanda's to sort of divide and conquer that work. But even that doesn't work that well because they're still ambiguities in the data with Iota ho. What we do is we actually profile the underlying data. By looking at the underlying data, we can quickly see that attribute. One looks very much like a U. S. Social Security number and attribute to looks like a I c D 10 medical code. And we do this by using anthologies and dictionaries and algorithms to help identify the underlying data and then tag it. Key Thio Doing, uh, this automation is really being able to normalize things across different databases, so that where there's differences in column names, I know that in fact, they contain contain the same data. And by going through this exercise with a Tahoe, not only can we identify the data, but we also could gain insights about the data. So, for example, we can see that 97% of that time that column named Attribute one that's got us Social Security numbers has something that looks like a Social Security number. But 3% of the time, it doesn't quite look right. Maybe there's a dash missing. Maybe there's a digit dropped. Or maybe there's even characters embedded in it. So there may be that may be indicative of a data quality issues, so we try to find those kind of things going a step further. We also try to identify data quality relationships. So, for example, we have two columns, one date, one date to through Ah, observation. We can see that date 1 99% of the time is less than date, too. 1% of the time. It's not probably indicative of a data quality issue, but going a step further, we can also build a business rule that says Day one is less than date to. And so then when it pops up again, we can quickly identify and re mediate that problem. So these are the kinds of things that we could do with with iota going even a step further. You could take your your favorite data science solution production ISAT and incorporated into our next version a zey what we call a worker process to do your own bespoke analytics. >>We spoke analytics. Excellent, Lester. Thank you. So a J talk us through some examples of where you're putting this to use. And also what is some of the feedback from >>some customers? But I think it helped do this Bring it to life a little bit. Lisa is just to talk through a case study way. Pull something together. I know it's available for download, but in ah, well known telecommunications media company, they had a lot of the issues that lasted. You spoke about lots of teams of Amanda's, um, super bright data practitioners, um, on baby looking to to get more productivity out of their day on, deliver a good result for their own customers for cell phone subscribers, Um, on broadband users. So you know that some of the examples that we can see here is how we went about auto generating a lot of that understanding off that data within hours. So Amanda had her data catalog populated automatically. A business class three built up on it. Really? Then start to see. Okay, where do I want Thio? Apply some policies to the data to to set in place some controls where they want to adapt, how different lines of business, maybe tax versus customer operations have different access or permissions to that data on What we've been able to do there is, is to build up that picture to see how does data move across the entire organization across the state. Andi on monitor that overtime for improvement, so have taken it from being a reactive. Let's do something Thio. Fix something. Thio, Now more proactive. We can see what's happening with our data. Who's using it? Who's accessing it, how it's being used, how it's being combined. Um, on from there. Taking a proactive approach is a real smart use of of the talents in in that telco organization Onda folks that worked there with data. >>Okay, Jason, dig into that a little bit deeper. And one of the things I was thinking when you were talking through some of those outcomes that you're helping customers achieve is our ally. How do customers measure are? Why? What are they seeing with iota host >>solution? Yeah, right now that the big ticket item is time to value on. And I think in data, a lot of the upfront investment cause quite expensive. They have been today with a lot of the larger vendors and technologies. So what a CEO and economic bio really needs to be certain of is how quickly can I get that are away. I think we've got something we can show. Just pull up a before and after, and it really comes down to hours, days and weeks. Um, where we've been able Thio have that impact on in this playbook that we pulled together before and after picture really shows. You know, those savings that committed a bit through providing data into some actionable form within hours and days to to drive agility, but at the same time being out and forced the controls to protect the use of that data who has access to it. So these are the number one thing I'd have to say. It's time on. We can see that on the the graphic that we've just pulled up here. >>We talk about achieving adaptive data governance. Lester, you guys talk about automation. You talk about machine learning. How are you seeing those technologies being a facilitator of organizations adopting adaptive data governance? Well, >>Azaz, we see Mitt Emmanuel day. The days of manual effort are so I think you know this >>is a >>multi step process. But the very first step is understanding what you have in normalizing that across your data estate. So you couple this with the ontology, that air unique to your business. There is no algorithms, and you basically go across and you identify and tag tag that data that allows for the next steps toe happen. So now I can write business rules not in terms of columns named columns, but I could write him in terms of the tags being able to automate. That is a huge time saver and the fact that we can suggest that as a rule, rather than waiting for a person to come along and say, Oh, wow. Okay, I need this rule. I need this will thes air steps that increased that are, I should say, decrease that time to value that A. J talked about and then, lastly, a couple of machine learning because even with even with great automation and being able to profile all of your data and getting a good understanding, that brings you to a certain point. But there's still ambiguities in the data. So, for example, I might have to columns date one and date to. I may have even observed the date. One should be less than day two, but I don't really know what date one and date to our other than a date. So this is where it comes in, and I might ask the user said, >>Can >>you help me identify what date? One and date You are in this in this table. Turns out they're a start date and an end date for alone That gets remembered, cycled into the machine learning. So if I start to see this pattern of date one day to elsewhere, I'm going to say, Is it start dating and date? And these Bringing all these things together with this all this automation is really what's key to enabling this This'll data governance. Yeah, >>great. Thanks. Lester and a j wanna wrap things up with something that you mentioned in the beginning about what you guys were doing with Oracle. Take us out by telling us what you're doing there. How are you guys working together? >>Yeah, I think those of us who worked in i t for many years we've We've learned Thio trust articles technology that they're shifting now to ah, hybrid on Prohm Cloud Generation to platform, which is exciting. Andi on their existing customers and new customers moving to article on a journey. So? So Oracle came to us and said, you know, we can see how quickly you're able to help us change mindsets Ondas mindsets are locked in a way of thinking around operating models of I t. That there may be no agile and what siloed on day wanting to break free of that and adopt a more agile A p I at driven approach. A lot of the work that we're doing with our recall no is around, uh, accelerating what customers conduce with understanding their data and to build digital APS by identifying the the underlying data that has value. Onda at the time were able to do that in in in hours, days and weeks. Rather many months. Is opening up the eyes to Chief Data Officers CEO to say, Well, maybe we can do this whole digital transformation this year. Maybe we can bring that forward and and transform who we are as a company on that's driving innovation, which we're excited about it. Governments want to talk a lot about that. Please welcome Yusuf Khan, the global director of data services for Iot Tahoe. We also have Santiago Castor, the chief data officer at the First Bank of Nigeria, and good John Vander Wal, Oracle's senior manager of digital transformation and industries. Gentlemen, it's great to have you joining us in this in this panel. Great >>to be >>tried for me. >>Alright, Santiago, we're going to start with you. Can you talk to the audience a little bit about the first Bank of Nigeria and its scale? This is beyond Nigeria. Talk to us about that. >>Yes, eso First Bank of Nigeria was created 125 years ago. One of the oldest ignored the old in Africa because of the history he grew everywhere in the region on beyond the region. I am calling based in London, where it's kind of the headquarters and it really promotes trade, finance, institutional banking, corporate banking, private banking around the world in particular, in relationship to Africa. We are also in Asia in in the Middle East. >>So, Sanjay, go talk to me about what adaptive data governance means to you. And how does it help the first Bank of Nigeria to be able to innovate faster with the data that you have? >>Yes, I like that concept off adaptive data governor, because it's kind of Ah, I would say an approach that can really happen today with the new technologies before it was much more difficult to implement. So just to give you a little bit of context, I I used to work in consulting for 16, 17 years before joining the president of Nigeria, and I saw many organizations trying to apply different type of approaches in the governance on by the beginning early days was really kind of a year. A Chicago A. A top down approach where data governance was seeing as implement a set of rules, policies and procedures. But really, from the top down on is important. It's important to have the battle off your sea level of your of your director. Whatever I saw, just the way it fails, you really need to have a complimentary approach. You can say bottom are actually as a CEO are really trying to decentralize the governor's. Really, Instead of imposing a framework that some people in the business don't understand or don't care about it, it really needs to come from them. So what I'm trying to say is that data basically support business objectives on what you need to do is every business area needs information on the detector decisions toe actually be able to be more efficient or create value etcetera. Now, depending on the business questions they have to solve, they will need certain data set. So they need actually to be ableto have data quality for their own. For us now, when they understand that they become the stores naturally on their own data sets. And that is where my bottom line is meeting my top down. You can guide them from the top, but they need themselves to be also empower and be actually, in a way flexible to adapt the different questions that they have in orderto be able to respond to the business needs. Now I cannot impose at the finish for everyone. I need them to adapt and to bring their answers toe their own business questions. That is adaptive data governor and all That is possible because we have. And I was saying at the very beginning just to finalize the point, we have new technologies that allow you to do this method data classifications, uh, in a very sophisticated way that you can actually create analitico of your metadata. You can understand your different data sources in order to be able to create those classifications like nationalities, a way of classifying your customers, your products, etcetera. >>So one of the things that you just said Santa kind of struck me to enable the users to be adaptive. They probably don't want to be logging in support ticket. So how do you support that sort of self service to meet the demand of the users so that they can be adaptive. >>More and more business users wants autonomy, and they want to basically be ableto grab the data and answer their own question. Now when you have, that is great, because then you have demand of businesses asking for data. They're asking for the insight. Eso How do you actually support that? I would say there is a changing culture that is happening more and more. I would say even the current pandemic has helped a lot into that because you have had, in a way, off course, technology is one of the biggest winners without technology. We couldn't have been working remotely without these technologies where people can actually looking from their homes and still have a market data marketplaces where they self serve their their information. But even beyond that data is a big winner. Data because the pandemic has shown us that crisis happened, that we cannot predict everything and that we are actually facing a new kind of situation out of our comfort zone, where we need to explore that we need to adapt and we need to be flexible. How do we do that with data. Every single company either saw the revenue going down or the revenue going very up For those companies that are very digital already. Now it changed the reality, so they needed to adapt. But for that they needed information. In order to think on innovate, try toe, create responses So that type of, uh, self service off data Haider for data in order to be able to understand what's happening when the prospect is changing is something that is becoming more, uh, the topic today because off the condemning because of the new abilities, the technologies that allow that and then you then are allowed to basically help your data. Citizens that call them in the organization people that no other business and can actually start playing and an answer their own questions. Eso so these technologies that gives more accessibility to the data that is some cataloging so they can understand where to go or what to find lineage and relationships. All this is is basically the new type of platforms and tools that allow you to create what are called a data marketplace. I think these new tools are really strong because they are now allowing for people that are not technology or I t people to be able to play with data because it comes in the digital world There. Used to a given example without your who You have a very interesting search functionality. Where if you want to find your data you want to sell, Sir, you go there in that search and you actually go on book for your data. Everybody knows how to search in Google, everybody's searching Internet. So this is part of the data culture, the digital culture. They know how to use those schools. Now, similarly, that data marketplace is, uh, in you can, for example, see which data sources they're mostly used >>and enabling that speed that we're all demanding today during these unprecedented times. Goodwin, I wanted to go to you as we talk about in the spirit of evolution, technology is changing. Talk to us a little bit about Oracle Digital. What are you guys doing there? >>Yeah, Thank you. Um, well, Oracle Digital is a business unit that Oracle EMEA on. We focus on emerging countries as well as low and enterprises in the mid market, in more developed countries and four years ago. This started with the idea to engage digital with our customers. Fear Central helps across EMEA. That means engaging with video, having conference calls, having a wall, a green wall where we stand in front and engage with our customers. No one at that time could have foreseen how this is the situation today, and this helps us to engage with our customers in the way we were already doing and then about my team. The focus of my team is to have early stage conversations with our with our customers on digital transformation and innovation. And we also have a team off industry experts who engaged with our customers and share expertise across EMEA, and we inspire our customers. The outcome of these conversations for Oracle is a deep understanding of our customer needs, which is very important so we can help the customer and for the customer means that we will help them with our technology and our resource is to achieve their goals. >>It's all about outcomes, right? Good Ron. So in terms of automation, what are some of the things Oracle's doing there to help your clients leverage automation to improve agility? So that they can innovate faster, which in these interesting times it's demanded. >>Yeah, thank you. Well, traditionally, Oracle is known for their databases, which have bean innovated year over year. So here's the first lunch on the latest innovation is the autonomous database and autonomous data warehouse. For our customers, this means a reduction in operational costs by 90% with a multi medal converts, database and machine learning based automation for full life cycle management. Our databases self driving. This means we automate database provisioning, tuning and scaling. The database is self securing. This means ultimate data protection and security, and it's self repairing the automates failure, detection fail over and repair. And then the question is for our customers, What does it mean? It means they can focus on their on their business instead off maintaining their infrastructure and their operations. >>That's absolutely critical use if I want to go over to you now. Some of the things that we've talked about, just the massive progression and technology, the evolution of that. But we know that whether we're talking about beta management or digital transformation, a one size fits all approach doesn't work to address the challenges that the business has, um that the i t folks have, as you're looking through the industry with what Santiago told us about first Bank of Nigeria. What are some of the changes that you're seeing that I owe Tahoe seeing throughout the industry? >>Uh, well, Lisa, I think the first way I'd characterize it is to say, the traditional kind of top down approach to data where you have almost a data Policeman who tells you what you can and can't do, just doesn't work anymore. It's too slow. It's too resource intensive. Uh, data management data, governments, digital transformation itself. It has to be collaborative on. There has to be in a personalization to data users. Um, in the environment we find ourselves in. Now, it has to be about enabling self service as well. Um, a one size fits all model when it comes to those things around. Data doesn't work. As Santiago was saying, it needs to be adapted toe how the data is used. Andi, who is using it on in order to do this cos enterprises organizations really need to know their data. They need to understand what data they hold, where it is on what the sensitivity of it is they can then any more agile way apply appropriate controls on access so that people themselves are and groups within businesses are our job and could innovate. Otherwise, everything grinds to a halt, and you risk falling behind your competitors. >>Yeah, that one size fits all term just doesn't apply when you're talking about adaptive and agility. So we heard from Santiago about some of the impact that they're making with First Bank of Nigeria. Used to talk to us about some of the business outcomes that you're seeing other customers make leveraging automation that they could not do >>before it's it's automatically being able to classify terabytes, terabytes of data or even petabytes of data across different sources to find duplicates, which you can then re mediate on. Deletes now, with the capabilities that iota offers on the Oracle offers, you can do things not just where the five times or 10 times improvement, but it actually enables you to do projects for Stop that otherwise would fail or you would just not be able to dio I mean, uh, classifying multi terrible and multi petabytes states across different sources, formats very large volumes of data in many scenarios. You just can't do that manually. I mean, we've worked with government departments on the issues there is expect are the result of fragmented data. There's a lot of different sources. There's lot of different formats and without these newer technologies to address it with automation on machine learning, the project isn't durable. But now it is on that that could lead to a revolution in some of these businesses organizations >>to enable that revolution that there's got to be the right cultural mindset. And one of the when Santiago was talking about folks really kind of adapted that. The thing I always call that getting comfortably uncomfortable. But that's hard for organizations to. The technology is here to enable that. But well, you're talking with customers use. How do you help them build the trust in the confidence that the new technologies and a new approaches can deliver what they need? How do you help drive the kind of a tech in the culture? >>It's really good question is because it can be quite scary. I think the first thing we'd start with is to say, Look, the technology is here with businesses like I Tahoe. Unlike Oracle, it's already arrived. What you need to be comfortable doing is experimenting being agile around it, Andi trying new ways of doing things. Uh, if you don't wanna get less behind that Santiago on the team that fbn are a great example off embracing it, testing it on a small scale on, then scaling up a Toyota, we offer what we call a data health check, which can actually be done very quickly in a matter of a few weeks. So we'll work with a customer. Picky use case, install the application, uh, analyzed data. Drive out Cem Cem quick winds. So we worked in the last few weeks of a large entity energy supplier, and in about 20 days, we were able to give them an accurate understanding of their critical data. Elements apply. Helping apply data protection policies. Minimize copies of the data on work out what data they needed to delete to reduce their infrastructure. Spend eso. It's about experimenting on that small scale, being agile on, then scaling up in a kind of very modern way. >>Great advice. Uh, Santiago, I'd like to go back to Is we kind of look at again that that topic of culture and the need to get that mindset there to facilitate these rapid changes, I want to understand kind of last question for you about how you're doing that from a digital transformation perspective. We know everything is accelerating in 2020. So how are you building resilience into your data architecture and also driving that cultural change that can help everyone in this shift to remote working and a lot of the the digital challenges and changes that we're all going through? >>The new technologies allowed us to discover the dating anyway. Toe flawed and see very quickly Information toe. Have new models off over in the data on giving autonomy to our different data units. Now, from that autonomy, they can then compose an innovator own ways. So for me now, we're talking about resilience because in a way, autonomy and flexibility in a organization in a data structure with platform gives you resilience. The organizations and the business units that I have experienced in the pandemic are working well. Are those that actually because they're not physically present during more in the office, you need to give them their autonomy and let them actually engaged on their own side that do their own job and trust them in a way on as you give them, that they start innovating and they start having a really interesting ideas. So autonomy and flexibility. I think this is a key component off the new infrastructure. But even the new reality that on then it show us that, yes, we used to be very kind off structure, policies, procedures as very important. But now we learn flexibility and adaptability of the same side. Now, when you have that a key, other components of resiliency speed, because people want, you know, to access the data and access it fast and on the site fast, especially changes are changing so quickly nowadays that you need to be ableto do you know, interact. Reiterate with your information to answer your questions. Pretty, um, so technology that allows you toe be flexible iterating on in a very fast job way continue will allow you toe actually be resilient in that way, because you are flexible, you adapt your job and you continue answering questions as they come without having everything, setting a structure that is too hard. We also are a partner off Oracle and Oracle. Embodies is great. They have embedded within the transactional system many algorithms that are allowing us to calculate as the transactions happened. What happened there is that when our customers engaged with algorithms and again without your powers, well, the machine learning that is there for for speeding the automation of how you find your data allows you to create a new alliance with the machine. The machine is their toe, actually, in a way to your best friend to actually have more volume of data calculated faster. In a way, it's cover more variety. I mean, we couldn't hope without being connected to this algorithm on >>that engagement is absolutely critical. Santiago. Thank you for sharing that. I do wanna rap really quickly. Good On one last question for you, Santiago talked about Oracle. You've talked about a little bit. As we look at digital resilience, talk to us a little bit in the last minute about the evolution of Oracle. What you guys were doing there to help your customers get the resilience that they have toe have to be not just survive but thrive. >>Yeah. Oracle has a cloud offering for infrastructure, database, platform service and a complete solutions offered a South on Daz. As Santiago also mentioned, We are using AI across our entire portfolio and by this will help our customers to focus on their business innovation and capitalize on data by enabling new business models. Um, and Oracle has a global conference with our cloud regions. It's massively investing and innovating and expanding their clouds. And by offering clouds as public cloud in our data centers and also as private cloud with clouded customer, we can meet every sovereignty and security requirements. And in this way we help people to see data in new ways. We discover insights and unlock endless possibilities. And and maybe 11 of my takeaways is if I If I speak with customers, I always tell them you better start collecting your data. Now we enable this partners like Iota help us as well. If you collect your data now, you are ready for tomorrow. You can never collect your data backwards, So that is my take away for today. >>You can't collect your data backwards. Excellently, John. Hey, everyone so great to be here. I said my name is Patrick Samit. I'm the enterprise data engineer here in Ohio Tahoe. And we're so excited to be here and talk about this topic as one thing we're really trying to perpetuate is that data is everyone's business. >>So, guys, what patent I got? I've actually had multiple discussions with clients from different organizations with different roles. So we spoke with both your technical and your non technical audience. So while they were interested in different aspects of our platform, we found that what they had in common was they wanted to make data easy to understand and usable. So that comes back. The pats point off to being everybody's business because no matter your role, we're all dependent on data. So what Pan I wanted to do today was wanted to walk you guys through some of those client questions, slash pain points that we're hearing from different industries and different rules and demo how our platform here, like Tahoe, is used for automating Dozier related tasks. So with that said are you ready for the first one, Pat? >>Yeah, Let's do it. >>Great. So I'm gonna put my technical hat on for this one. So I'm a data practitioner. I just started my job. ABC Bank. I have, like, over 100 different data sources. So I have data kept in Data Lakes, legacy data, sources, even the cloud. So my issue is I don't know what those data sources hold. I don't know what data sensitive, and I don't even understand how that data is connected. So how can I saw who help? >>Yeah, I think that's a very common experience many are facing and definitely something I've encountered in my past. Typically, the first step is to catalog the data and then start mapping the relationships between your various data stores. Now, more often than not, this has tackled through numerous meetings and a combination of excel and something similar to video which are too great tools in their own part. But they're very difficult to maintain. Just due to the rate that we are creating data in the modern world. It starts to beg for an idea that can scale with your business needs. And this is where a platform like Io Tahoe becomes so appealing, you can see here visualization of the data relationships created by the I. O. Tahoe service. Now, what is fantastic about this is it's not only laid out in a very human and digestible format in the same action of creating this view, the data catalog was constructed. >>Um so is the data catalog automatically populated? Correct. Okay, so So what I'm using Iota hope at what I'm getting is this complete, unified automated platform without the added cost? Of course. >>Exactly. And that's at the heart of Iota Ho. They're always such a joy to deal with. Now, by leveraging this interface, we can start to answer the first part of your question and understand where the core relationships within our data exists. Uh, personally, I'm a big fan of this view, as it really just helps the i b naturally John to these focal points that coincide with these key columns following that train of thought, Let's examine the customer I D column that seems to be at the center of a lot of these relationships. We can see that it's a fairly important column as it's maintaining the relationship between at least three other tables. >>Now you >>notice all the connectors are in this blue color. This means that their system defined relationships. But I hope Tahoe goes that extra mile and actually creates thes orange colored connectors as well. These air ones that are machine learning algorithms have predicted to be relationships on. You can leverage to try and make new and powerful relationships within your data. >>Eso So this is really cool, and I can see how this could be leverage quickly now. What if I added new data sources or your multiple data sources and need toe identify what data sensitive can iota who detect that? >>Yeah, definitely. Within the hotel platform. There, already over 300 pre defined policies such as hip for C, C, P. A and the like one can choose which of these policies to run against their data along for flexibility and efficiency and running the policies that affect organization. >>Okay, so so 300 is an exceptional number. I'll give you that. But what about internal policies that apply to my organization? Is there any ability for me to write custom policies? >>Yeah, that's no issue. And it's something that clients leverage fairly often to utilize this function when simply has to write a rejects that our team has helped many deploy. After that, the custom policy is stored for future use to profile sensitive data. One then selects the data sources they're interested in and select the policies that meet your particular needs. The interface will automatically take your data according to the policies of detects, after which you can review the discoveries confirming or rejecting the tagging. All of these insights are easily exported through the interface. Someone can work these into the action items within your project management systems, and I think this lends to the collaboration as a team can work through the discovery simultaneously, and as each item is confirmed or rejected, they can see it ni instantaneously. All this translates to a confidence that with iota hope, you can be sure you're in compliance. >>So I'm glad you mentioned compliance because that's extremely important to my organization. So what you're saying when I use the eye a Tahoe automated platform, we'd be 90% more compliant that before were other than if you were going to be using a human. >>Yeah, definitely the collaboration and documentation that the Iot Tahoe interface lends itself to really help you build that confidence that your compliance is sound. >>So we're planning a migration. Andi, I have a set of reports I need to migrate. But what I need to know is, uh well, what what data sources? Those report those reports are dependent on. And what's feeding those tables? >>Yeah, it's a fantastic questions to be toe identifying critical data elements, and the interdependencies within the various databases could be a time consuming but vital process and the migration initiative. Luckily, Iota Ho does have an answer, and again, it's presented in a very visual format. >>Eso So what I'm looking at here is my entire day landscape. >>Yes, exactly. >>Let's say I add another data source. I can still see that unified 3 60 view. >>Yeah, One future that is particularly helpful is the ability to add data sources after the data lineage. Discovery has finished alone for the flexibility and scope necessary for any data migration project. If you only need need to select a few databases or your entirety, this service will provide the answers. You're looking for things. Visual representation of the connectivity makes the identification of critical data elements a simple matter. The connections air driven by both system defined flows as well as those predicted by our algorithms, the confidence of which, uh, can actually be customized to make sure that they're meeting the needs of the initiative that you have in place. This also provides tabular output in case you needed for your own internal documentation or for your action items, which we can see right here. Uh, in this interface, you can actually also confirm or deny the pair rejection the pair directions, allowing to make sure that the data is as accurate as possible. Does that help with your data lineage needs? >>Definitely. So So, Pat, My next big question here is So now I know a little bit about my data. How do I know I can trust >>it? So >>what I'm interested in knowing, really is is it in a fit state for me to use it? Is it accurate? Does it conform to the right format? >>Yeah, that's a great question. And I think that is a pain point felt across the board, be it by data practitioners or data consumers alike. Another service that I owe Tahoe provides is the ability to write custom data quality rules and understand how well the data pertains to these rules. This dashboard gives a unified view of the strength of these rules, and your dad is overall quality. >>Okay, so Pat s o on on the accuracy scores there. So if my marketing team needs to run, a campaign can read dependent those accuracy scores to know what what tables have quality data to use for our marketing campaign. >>Yeah, this view would allow you to understand your overall accuracy as well as dive into the minutia to see which data elements are of the highest quality. So for that marketing campaign, if you need everything in a strong form, you'll be able to see very quickly with these high level numbers. But if you're only dependent on a few columns to get that information out the door, you can find that within this view, eso >>you >>no longer have to rely on reports about reports, but instead just come to this one platform to help drive conversations between stakeholders and data practitioners. >>So I get now the value of IATA who brings by automatically capturing all those technical metadata from sources. But how do we match that with the business glossary? >>Yeah, within the same data quality service that we just reviewed, one can actually add business rules detailing the definitions and the business domains that these fall into. What's more is that the data quality rules were just looking at can then be tied into these definitions. A J ahora is CEO of I O ta ho, JJ. Good to see how things in London >>Thanks doing well. Things in, well, customers that I speak to on day in, day out that we partner with, um, they're busy adapting their businesses to serve their customers. It's very much a game of ensuring the week and serve our customers to help their customers. Um, you know, the adaptation that's happening here is, um, trying to be more agile. Got to be more flexible. Um, a lot of pressure on data, a lot of demand on data and to deliver more value to the business, too. So that customers, >>as I said, we've been talking about data ops a lot. The idea being Dev Ops applied to the data pipeline, But talk about enterprise data automation. What is it to you. And how is it different from data off >>Dev Ops, you know, has been great for breaking down those silos between different roles functions and bring people together to collaborate. Andi, you know, we definitely see that those tools, those methodologies, those processes, that kind of thinking, um, lending itself to data with data is exciting. We look to do is build on top of that when data automation, it's the it's the nuts and bolts of the the algorithms, the models behind machine learning that the functions. That's where we investors, our r and d on bringing that in to build on top of the the methods, the ways of thinking that break down those silos on injecting that automation into the business processes that are going to drive a business to serve its customers. It's, um, a layer beyond Dev ops data ops. They can get to that point where well, I think about it is is the automation behind new dimension. We've come a long way in the last few years. Boy is, we started out with automating some of those simple, um, to codify, um, I have a high impact on organization across the data a cost effective way house. There's data related tasks that classify data on and a lot of our original pattern certain people value that were built up is is very much around that >>love to get into the tech a little bit in terms of how it works. And I think we have a graphic here that gets into that a little bit. So, guys, if you bring that up, >>sure. I mean right there in the middle that the heart of what we do it is, you know, the intellectual property now that we've built up over time that takes from Hacha genius data sources. Your Oracle Relational database. Short your mainframe. It's a lay and increasingly AP eyes and devices that produce data and that creates the ability to automatically discover that data. Classify that data after it's classified. Them have the ability to form relationships across those different source systems, silos, different lines of business. And once we've automated that that we can start to do some cool things that just puts of contact and meaning around that data. So it's moving it now from bringing data driven on increasingly where we have really smile, right people in our customer organizations you want I do some of those advanced knowledge tasks data scientists and ah, yeah, quants in some of the banks that we work with, the the onus is on, then, putting everything we've done there with automation, pacifying it, relationship, understanding that equality, the policies that you can apply to that data. I'm putting it in context once you've got the ability to power. Okay, a professional is using data, um, to be able to put that data and contacts and search across the entire enterprise estate. Then then they can start to do some exciting things and piece together the the tapestry that fabric across that different system could be crm air P system such as s AP and some of the newer brown databases that we work with. Snowflake is a great well, if I look back maybe five years ago, we had prevalence of daily technologies at the cutting edge. Those are converging to some of the cloud platforms that we work with Google and AWS and I think very much is, as you said it, those manual attempts to try and grasp. But it is such a complex challenges scale quickly runs out of steam because once, once you've got your hat, once you've got your fingers on the details Oh, um, what's what's in your data state? It's changed, You know, you've onboard a new customer. You signed up a new partner. Um, customer has, you know, adopted a new product that you just Lawrence and there that that slew of data keeps coming. So it's keeping pace with that. The only answer really is is some form of automation >>you're working with AWS. You're working with Google, You got red hat. IBM is as partners. What is attracting those folks to your ecosystem and give us your thoughts on the importance of ecosystem? >>That's fundamental. So, I mean, when I caimans where you tell here is the CEO of one of the, um, trends that I wanted us CIO to be part of was being open, having an open architecture allowed one thing that was close to my heart, which is as a CEO, um, a c i o where you go, a budget vision on and you've already made investments into your organization, and some of those are pretty long term bets. They should be going out 5 10 years, sometimes with the CRM system training up your people, getting everybody working together around a common business platform. What I wanted to ensure is that we could openly like it using AP eyes that were available, the love that some investment on the cost that has already gone into managing in organizations I t. But business users to before. So part of the reason why we've been able to be successful with, um, the partners like Google AWS and increasingly, a number of technology players. That red hat mongo DB is another one where we're doing a lot of good work with, um and snowflake here is, um Is those investments have been made by the organizations that are our customers, and we want to make sure we're adding to that. And they're leveraging the value that they've already committed to. >>Yeah, and maybe you could give us some examples of the r A y and the business impact. >>Yeah, I mean, the r a y David is is built upon on three things that I mentioned is a combination off. You're leveraging the existing investment with the existing estate, whether that's on Microsoft Azure or AWS or Google, IBM, and I'm putting that to work because, yeah, the customers that we work with have had made those choices. On top of that, it's, um, is ensuring that we have got the automation that is working right down to the level off data, a column level or the file level we don't do with meta data. It is being very specific to be at the most granular level. So as we've grown our processes and on the automation, gasification tagging, applying policies from across different compliance and regulatory needs that an organization has to the data, everything that then happens downstream from that is ready to serve a business outcome now without hoping out which run those processes within hours of getting started And, um, Bill that picture, visualize that picture and bring it to life. You know, the PR Oh, I that's off the bat with finding data that should have been deleted data that was copies off on and being able to allow the architect whether it's we're working on GCB or a migration to any other clouds such as AWS or a multi cloud landscape right off the map. >>A. She's a senior vice president of enterprise Data Architecture at Webster Bank. Good to see you. Thanks for coming on. >>Nice to see you too. Yes. >>So let's let's start with Let's start with Webster Bank. You guys are kind of a regional. I think New York, New England, uh, leave headquartered out of Connecticut, but tell us a little bit about the >>bank. Yeah, Webster Bank is regional, Boston. And that again in New York, Um, very focused on in Westchester and Fairfield County. Um, they're a really highly rated bank regional bank for this area. They, um, hold, um, quite a few awards for the area for being supportive for the community. And, um, are really moving forward. Technology lives. Currently, today we have, ah, a small group that is just working toward moving into a more futuristic, more data driven data warehouse. That's our first item. And then the other item is to drive new revenue by anticipating what customers do when they go to the bank or when they log into there to be able to give them the best offer. The only way to do that is you have timely, accurate, complete data on the customer and what's really a great value on off something to offer that >>at the top level, what were some of what are some of the key business drivers there catalyzing your desire for change >>the ability to give the customer what they need at the time when they need it? And what I mean by that is that we have, um, customer interactions and multiple weights, right? And I want to be able for the customer, too. Walk into a bank, um, or online and see the same the same format and being able to have the same feel, the same look and also to be able to offer them the next best offer for them. >>Part of it is really the cycle time, the end end cycle, time that you're pressing. And then there's if I understand it, residual benefits that are pretty substantial from a revenue opportunity >>exactly. It's drive new customers, Teoh new opportunities. It's enhanced the risk, and it's to optimize the banking process and then obviously, to create new business. Um, and the only way we're going to be able to do that is that we have the ability to look at the data right when the customer walks in the door or right when they open up their app. >>Do you see the potential to increase the data sources and hence the quality of the data? Or is that sort of premature? >>Oh, no. Um, exactly. Right. So right now we ingest a lot of flat files and from our mainframe type of runnin system that we've had for quite a few years. But now that we're moving to the cloud and off Prem and on France, you know, moving off Prem into, like, an s three bucket Where that data king, we can process that data and get that data faster by using real time tools to move that data into a place where, like, snowflake Good, um, utilize that data or we can give it out to our market. The data scientists are out in the lines of business right now, which is great, cause I think that's where data science belongs. We should give them on, and that's what we're working towards now is giving them more self service, giving them the ability to access the data in a more robust way. And it's a single source of truth. So they're not pulling the data down into their own like tableau dashboards and then pushing the data back out. I have eight engineers, data architects, they database administrators, right, um, and then data traditional data forwarding people, Um, and because some customers that I have that our business customers lines of business, they want to just subscribe to a report. They don't want to go out and do any data science work. Um, and we still have to provide that. So we still want to provide them some kind of read regiment that they wake up in the morning and they open up their email. And there's the report that they just drive, um, which is great. And it works out really well. And one of the things. This is why we purchase I o waas. I would have the ability to give the lines of business the ability to do search within the data, and we read the data flows and data redundancy and things like that and help me cleanup the data and also, um, to give it to the data. Analysts who say All right, they just asked me. They want this certain report and it used to take Okay, well, we're gonna four weeks, we're going to go. We're gonna look at the data, and then we'll come back and tell you what we dio. But now with Iot Tahoe, they're able to look at the data and then, in one or two days of being able to go back and say, Yes, we have data. This is where it is. This is where we found that this is the data flows that we've found also, which is what I call it is the birth of a column. It's where the calm was created and where it went live as a teenager. And then it went to, you know, die very archive. >>In researching Iot Tahoe, it seems like one of the strengths of their platform is the ability to visualize data the data structure, and actually dig into it. But also see it, um, and that speeds things up and gives everybody additional confidence. And then the other pieces essentially infusing ai or machine intelligence into the data pipeline is really how you're attacking automation, right? >>Exactly. So you're able to let's say that I have I have seven cause lines of business that are asking me questions. And one of the questions I'll ask me is, um, we want to know if this customer is okay to contact, right? And you know, there's different avenues so you can go online to go. Do not contact me. You can go to the bank And you could say, I don't want, um, email, but I'll take tests and I want, you know, phone calls. Um, all that information. So seven different lines of business asked me that question in different ways once said Okay to contact the other one says, You know, just for one to pray all these, you know, um, and each project before I got there used to be siloed. So one customer would be 100 hours for them to do that and analytical work, and then another cut. Another of analysts would do another 100 hours on the other project. Well, now I can do that all at once, and I can do those type of searches and say yes we already have that documentation. Here it is. And this is where you can find where the customer has said, You know, you don't want I don't want to get access from you by email, or I've subscribed to get emails from you. I'm using Iot typos eight automation right now to bring in the data and to start analyzing the data close to make sure that I'm not missing anything and that I'm not bringing over redundant data. Um, the data warehouse that I'm working off is not, um a It's an on prem. It's an oracle database. Um, and it's 15 years old, so it has extra data in it. It has, um, things that we don't need anymore. And Iot. Tahoe's helping me shake out that, um, extra data that does not need to be moved into my S three. So it's saving me money when I'm moving from offering on Prem. >>What's your vision or your your data driven organization? >>Um, I want for the bankers to be able to walk around with on iPad in their hands and be able to access data for that customer really fast and be able to give them the best deal that they can get. I want Webster to be right there on top, with being able to add new customers and to be able to serve our existing customers who had bank accounts. Since you were 12 years old there and now our, you know, multi. Whatever. Um, I want them to be able to have the best experience with our our bankers. >>That's really what I want is a banking customer. I want my bank to know who I am, anticipate my needs and create a great experience for me. And then let me go on with my life. And so that's a great story. Give us a little background CTO, You've got a deep, deep expertise in a lot of different areas. But what do we need to know? >>Well, David, I started my career basically at Microsoft, uh, where I started the information Security Cryptography group. They're the very 1st 1 that the company had, and that led to a career in information, security. And and, of course, as easy as you go along with information security data is the key element to be protected. Eso I always had my hands and data not naturally progressed into a roll out Iot talk was their CTO. >>What's the prescription for that automation journey and simplifying that migration to the cloud? >>Well, I think the first thing is understanding what you've got. So discover and cataloging your data and your applications. You know, I don't know what I have. I can't move it. I can't. I can't improve it. I can't build upon it. And I have to understand there's dependence. And so building that data catalog is the very first step What I got. Okay, >>so So we've done the audit. We know we've got what's what's next? Where do we go >>next? So the next thing is remediating that data you know, where do I have duplicate data? I may have often times in an organization. Uh, data will get duplicated. So somebody will take a snapshot of the data, you know, and then end up building a new application, which suddenly becomes dependent on that data. So it's not uncommon for an organization of 20 master instances of a customer, and you can see where that will go. And trying to keep all that stuff in sync becomes a nightmare all by itself. So you want to sort of understand where all your redundant data is? So when you go to the cloud, maybe you have an opportunity here to do you consolidate that that data, >>then what? You figure out what to get rid of our actually get rid of it. What's what's next? >>Yes, yes, that would be the next step. So figure out what you need. What, you don't need you Often times I've found that there's obsolete columns of data in your databases that you just don't need. Or maybe it's been superseded by another. You've got tables have been superseded by other tables in your database, so you got to kind of understand what's being used and what's not. And then from that, you can decide. I'm gonna leave this stuff behind or I'm gonna I'm gonna archive this stuff because I might need it for data retention where I'm just gonna delete it. You don't need it. All were >>plowing through your steps here. What's next on the >>journey? The next one is is in a nutshell. Preserve your data format. Don't. Don't, Don't. Don't boil the ocean here at music Cliche. You know, you you want to do a certain degree of lift and shift because you've got application dependencies on that data and the data format, the tables in which they sent the columns and the way they're named. So some degree, you are gonna be doing a lift and ship, but it's an intelligent lift and ship. The >>data lives in silos. So how do you kind of deal with that? Problem? Is that is that part of the journey? >>That's that's great pointed because you're right that the data silos happen because, you know, this business unit is start chartered with this task. Another business unit has this task and that's how you get those in stance creations of the same data occurring in multiple places. So you really want to is part of your cloud migration. You really want a plan where there's an opportunity to consolidate your data because that means it will be less to manage. Would be less data to secure, and it will be. It will have a smaller footprint, which means reduce costs. >>But maybe you could address data quality. Where does that fit in on the >>journey? That's that's a very important point, you know. First of all, you don't want to bring your legacy issues with U. S. As the point I made earlier. If you've got data quality issues, this is a good time to find those and and identify and remediate them. But that could be a laborious task, and you could probably accomplish. It will take a lot of work. So the opportunity used tools you and automate that process is really will help you find those outliers that >>what's next? I think we're through. I think I've counted six. What's the What's the lucky seven >>Lucky seven involved your business users. Really, When you think about it, you're your data is in silos, part of part of this migration to cloud as an opportunity to break down the silos. These silence that naturally occurs are the business. You, uh, you've got to break these cultural barriers that sometimes exists between business and say so. For example, I always advise there's an opportunity year to consolidate your sensitive data. Your P I. I personally identifiable information and and three different business units have the same source of truth From that, there's an opportunity to consolidate that into one. >>Well, great advice, Lester. The hashtag is data automated and we're going to really dig into data migrations, data migrations. They're risky, they're time consuming and they're expensive. Yousef con is here. He's the head of partnerships and alliances at I o ta ho coming again from London. Hey, good to see you, Seth. Thanks very much. >>Thank you. >>So let's set up the problem a little bit. And then I want to get into some of the data said that migration is a risky, time consuming, expensive. They're they're often times a blocker for organizations to really get value out of data. Why is that? >>I think I mean, all migrations have to start with knowing the facts about your data. Uh, and you can try and do this manually. But when you have an organization that may have been going for decades or longer, they will probably have a pretty large legacy data estate so that I have everything from on premise mainframes. They may have stuff which is probably in the cloud, but they probably have hundreds, if not thousands of applications and potentially hundreds of different data stores. >>So I want to dig into this migration and let's let's pull up graphic. It will talk about We'll talk about what a typical migration project looks like. So what you see, here it is. It's very detailed. I know it's a bit of an eye test, but let me call your attention to some of the key aspects of this, uh and then use if I want you to chime in. So at the top here, you see that area graph that's operational risk for a typical migration project, and you can see the timeline and the the milestones That Blue Bar is the time to test so you can see the second step. Data analysis. It's 24 weeks so very time consuming, and then let's not get dig into the stuff in the middle of the fine print. But there's some real good detail there, but go down the bottom. That's labor intensity in the in the bottom, and you can see hi is that sort of brown and and you could see a number of data analysis data staging data prep, the trial, the implementation post implementation fixtures, the transition to be a Blu, which I think is business as usual. >>The key thing is, when you don't understand your data upfront, it's very difficult to scope to set up a project because you go to business stakeholders and decision makers, and you say Okay, we want to migrate these data stores. We want to put them in the cloud most often, but actually, you probably don't know how much data is there. You don't necessarily know how many applications that relates to, you know, the relationships between the data. You don't know the flow of the basis of the direction in which the data is going between different data stores and tables. So you start from a position where you have pretty high risk and probably the area that risk you could be. Stack your project team of lots and lots of people to do the next phase, which is analysis. And so you set up a project which has got a pretty high cost. The big projects, more people, the heavy of governance, obviously on then there, then in the phase where they're trying to do lots and lots of manual analysis, um, manual processes, as we all know, on the layer of trying to relate data that's in different grocery stores relating individual tables and columns, very time consuming, expensive. If you're hiring in resource from consultants or systems integrators externally, you might need to buy or to use party tools. Aziz said earlier the people who understand some of those systems may have left a while ago. CEO even higher risks quite cost situation from the off on the same things that have developed through the project. Um, what are you doing with Ayatollah? Who is that? We're able to automate a lot of this process from the very beginning because we can do the initial data. Discovery run, for example, automatically you very quickly have an automated validator. A data met on the data flow has been generated automatically, much less time and effort and much less cars stopped. >>Yeah. And now let's bring up the the the same chart. But with a set of an automation injection in here and now. So you now see the sort of Cisco said accelerated by Iot, Tom. Okay, great. And we're gonna talk about this, but look, what happens to the operational risk. A dramatic reduction in that, That that graph and then look at the bars, the bars, those blue bars. You know, data analysis went from 24 weeks down to four weeks and then look at the labor intensity. The it was all these were high data analysis, data staging data prep trialling post implementation fixtures in transition to be a you all those went from high labor intensity. So we've now attacked that and gone to low labor intensity. Explain how that magic happened. >>I think that the example off a data catalog. So every large enterprise wants to have some kind of repository where they put all their understanding about their data in its price States catalog. If you like, imagine trying to do that manually, you need to go into every individual data store. You need a DB, a business analyst, reach data store. They need to do an extract of the data. But it on the table was individually they need to cross reference that with other data school, it stores and schemers and tables you probably with the mother of all Lock Excel spreadsheets. It would be a very, very difficult exercise to do. I mean, in fact, one of our reflections as we automate lots of data lots of these things is, um it accelerates the ability to water may, But in some cases, it also makes it possible for enterprise customers with legacy systems take banks, for example. There quite often end up staying on mainframe systems that they've had in place for decades. I'm not migrating away from them because they're not able to actually do the work of understanding the data, duplicating the data, deleting data isn't relevant and then confidently going forward to migrate. So they stay where they are with all the attendant problems assistance systems that are out of support. You know, you know, the biggest frustration for lots of them and the thing that they spend far too much time doing is trying to work out what the right data is on cleaning data, which really you don't want a highly paid thanks to scientists doing with their time. But if you sort out your data in the first place, get rid of duplication that sounds migrate to cloud store where things are really accessible. It's easy to build connections and to use native machine learning tools. You well, on the way up to the maturity card, you can start to use some of the more advanced applications >>massive opportunities not only for technology companies, but for those organizations that can apply technology for business. Breaking Analysis: How Tech Execs are Responding to COVID 19
>>from the Cube Studios in Palo Alto and Boston connecting with thought leaders all around the world. This is a cube conversation. Hello, everyone, and welcome to this week's Cuban sites, powered by ET are in this breaking analysis, we want to accomplish three things. First thing I'll do is we'll recap the current spending outlook. Next, we want to share some of the priorities and sentiments and the outlook that we're hearing from leading tech execs that we've been interviewing in the past couple of weeks on the remote cube. And finally, we'll take a look at really what's going on in the market place, a little bit of a look forward and what we expect in the coming weeks and months ahead. Now, as you know, E. T. R was really the first to quantify with real survey data the impact of covert 19 on I t spend. So I just want to review that for a moment. This CTR graphic right here shows that results from more than 1200 CIOs and I T practitioners. That shows that they expect their I t spending how they're they're spending on the change in 2020 now, look at the gray bar shows a very large number of organizations that they're plowing ahead without any change. In overall, I spend about 35% now shown in the green bars before 21% of respondents are actually increase their budgets this year. And the red bars, of course, they show the carnage. Really, 28% of customers are expecting a decrease of more than 10% year on year. Now, as we've reported, the picture would look a lot worse were it not for the work from home infrastructure, offset by E spending on collaboration tools and related networking security. VPN, VD I interest infrastructure, etcetera. Now remember each year launched this survey on March 11th and ran it through early April. So it caught the change in sentiment literally in real time on a daily basis. And that's what I'm showing here in this graphic. What it does is it overlays key events that occurred during that time frame and what E. T. R did was they modeled and rear end the data excluding the responses prior to each event. So, of course, the forecast got progressively worse over time. But as you can see on the Purple Line. There was a little bit of an uptick in sentiment from the stimulus package, and it looked like, you know, there's another. It looks like there's another economic cash injection coming soon. Now, as we've reported, the card forecast calls for around 4% decline in I t spend from 2020. That's down from plus 4% prior to Corona virus. It's ER has now entered its self imposed quiet period for two weeks. But what we're doing here is showing some of the sectors that we're watching closely for big changes. We're gonna drill into these over the next several weeks. Now, of course, is we've reported we're seeing a substantial cut in I t spend across the board. Capex will be down. We would expect sectors like I t consulting and outsourcing to be way, way down as organizations put a lot of projects on the back burner. But there are bright spots is shown here in the green. One that we really haven't highlighted to date is cloud really haven't dug into that and also data center related services around Cloud Cloud, we think, is definitely going to remain strong and these related services to get connect clouds via Coehlo services and really reducing latency across clouds and on Prem, we think will remain strong. Now I want to shift gears a little bit and talk about some of the learnings and takeaways from our conversations with CSOs over the past couple of weeks. One of the great things about the Cube is we get to build relationships with many, many people. Over the past 10 years, I've probably personally interviewed close to 5000 people, so we've reached out to a number of those execs over the last couple of weeks to really try and understand how they're managing through this cove in 19 Crisis. So let me summarize just some of the things that we heard. And then I'll let the execs speak to you directly first, of course, like tech execs, are there half full people perpetual optimist, if you will. It was interesting to hear how many of the people that I spoke with, that they actually had early visibility on this crisis. Why? Because a lot of our operations, we're actually in China and other parts of Asia, so they saw this coming to an extent, and they saw it coming to the U. S. And so you know, there were somewhat ready and you're here. They all had on air of confidence about their long term viability and putting their put their employees ahead of profits. But the same time, once they see that their employees are okay, they want to get them focused and productive. Now what they've also done is they've increased the cadence and the frequency of their communications. Yeah, and most, if not all, are trying to get back with a free no strings attached software and other similar programs. But the bottom line is, they really don't know what's coming. They don't know when this thing will end. They don't know what a recovery really is gonna look like when people are going to feel safe traveling again what the overall economic impact is gonna be. So I think it's best summarized to say they're hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. But let's listen to this highlight clip that we put together of five execs that I talked to along with John Furrier Melissa DiDonato of Susa. Frank Sluman, who had snowflake and he's formerly the chairman and CEO of service. Now Jeremy Burton is the CEO of a company called Observe. He used to be the CMO of Dell and EMC. Before that, brand products Sanjay Poonam as the CEO of VM Ware and ST ST Vossen heads up Cisco's collaboration business. Roll the clip. >>What keeps me up at night now and how I wake up every morning is wondering about the health of my employees, that a couple of employees, one that was quite ill in Italy. We were phoning him and calling and emailing him from his hospital bed. And that's what's really keeping me going. What's inspiring me to leave this incredible company is the people and the culture that they built that I'm honoring and taking forward as part of the open source value system. My first movers, Let's not overreact. Take a deep breath. Let's really examine what we know. Let's not jump to conclusions. Let's not try to project things that were not capable of projecting death hard because, you know, we tend to have sort of levels off certainty about what's gonna happen in the next week in the next month, and so on. All of a sudden that's out of the window creates enormous anxiety with people. So, in other words, you've got a sort of a reset to Okay, what do we know? What can we do? What we control, Um, and and not let our minds sort of, you know, go out of control. So I talk to are people time of maintain a sense of normalcy focused on the work. Stay in the state in the moment. And ah, I don't turn the news feed off. Right, Because the hysteria you get through that through the media really not helpful. Just haven't been through, you know, a couple of recessions where, you know, we all went through 9 11 You know, the world just turn around and you come out the other side. And so the key thing is, you said it very much is a cliche, but you gotta live in the moment. What can I do right now? What can I affect right now? How can I make sure that you know what I'm working on is a value for when we come out the other side. And when you know more code balls come along. I think you'd better reason about that with the best information you have at the time. I always tell people the profits of VM Ware wheat. If you are not well, if your loved ones not well, if you take a picture of that first, we will be fine. You know this to show fast, but if you're healthy, let's turn our attention because we're not going to just sit in a little mini games. We're gonna so, customers, How do we do that? A lot of our customers are adjusting to this pool, and as a result they have to, you know, either order devices, but the laptop screens things were the kinds to allow work for your environment to be as close to productive as they're working today. I do see some, some things coming. Problem right? Do I expect the volumes off collaboration to go down? You know, it's never going to go back to the same level. The world as we know it is going to change forever. We are going to have a post code area, and that's going to be changed for the better. There's a number of employees who have been skeptical, reticent, working from home were suddenly going to say just work from home. Thing is not so bad after all. >>So you can hear from the execs who all either currently or one point of lead large companies in large teams. They're pretty optimistic now. The other thing that's Lukman told me, by the way, is he approves investments in engineering with no qualms because that's the future of the company. But he's much more circumspect with regard to go to market investments because he wants to see a high probability of yield from the sales teams before making investments there. I also want to share some perspectives that I've learned from small early stage companies, and we've all seen the Sequoia Black Swan memo and you might remember there onerous rest in peace, good times the alert that they put out in 2008. It basically they're essentially advising companies to stop spending on non essential items. By the way, another slew of society also somewhat scoffed at this advice, and he told me on the Cube, you should always stop spending money on non essential items. At any rate, I've talked to a number of early stage investors and portfolio companies, and I'll share a little bit of their play Bach playbook that they're using during this crisis, and it might have some value to the cut, cut cut narrative that you're hearing out there. I think the summary for these early stage startups is first focus on those customers that got you to where you are today. In other words, don't lose sight of your core. The second thing is, try to hone your go to market and align it with current conditions. In other words, paint a picture of the ideal customer and the value proposition that you deliver specifically in the context of the current market. The third thing is, they're updating their forecast more frequently and running sensitivity analysis much more often so that they can better predict outcomes. I e. Reset. You're likely best case and worst case models. The third is essentially reset your near term and midterm plans and those goals and re balance your expense portfolio to reflect these new targets. And this is important by the way, to communicate to your investors. When I've seen is those companies with annual recurring revenue there actually in pretty good shape, believe it or not, in almost all cases, I've seen targets lowered. But there are some examples of startups that are actually increasing their outlook. Think, Zoom, even those who is not a startup anymore. But generally I've seen resets of between 5 to 10% downward, which you know what often is in pretty much in line with the board level goals. And I've seen more drastic reductions as well of up to 50% now. So we've heard some pretty good stories from larger tech companies and some of these VC funded startups. Now I want to talk about small business broadly and what we're hearing from small business owners and also the banks that serve them. Look, I'm not going to sugar coat this many small businesses, as you well know, in deep trouble. They're gonna go out of business. They're laying off people on. There are a number of unemployed the aid package that the government's putting forth the small businesses. It's not working its way through the banking system. Not nearly fast enough, despite the Treasury secretaries efforts, The bottom line is banks don't want to make these loans to small businesses. Right now, there's too much that they don't understand. They're making no money on these loans they're being overwhelmed with. Volume will give you some examples. Bank of America, when the small business payroll program first hit signal that would Onley help companies with both ah banking relationship and an existing lending relationship with the bank UPS is another example said it was only gonna directly help companies with over 500 employees. And for small businesses, it was outsourcing that relationship to another firm, which, of course, meant you had to go through a new rectal exam, if you will, with that new firm. In a way, you can't blame the banks. They're being asked to execute on these programs without clear guidance on how they're supposed to enforce guidelines. And what happens if they make a mistake? Is the federal government gonna pull their guaranteed backing? What are those guidelines? They seem to be changing all the time. And what's the banks, liability and authority to enforce them? Why don't I spend time talking about this? Well, nearly half of US employees work for small businesses, and nearly 17 million workers as of this date have filed for unemployment, and I'll say the banks got bailed out in the financial crisis of 2008 and they need to step up, period, and the government needs to help them, all right. The other buzz kill data that I want to bring up is our national debt. Now many have invoked that there's no such thing as a free lunch, including the famous Milton Friedman, the Economist who I'm gonna credit. Others have said it, but I'll give it to him. Why? Because he espoused controlling the money supply and letting the market's fix themselves bailouts. The banks, airlines, Boeing, automakers, etcetera, those air antithetical to his underlying philosophy. Currently, the U. S national debt is $24 trillion. That's $194,000. Protects player Americans. Personal debt is now 20 trillion. Our unfunded liabilities, like Social Security, Medicare, etcetera now stands at a whopping 139 trillion. And that equates to about 422,000 per citizen. Think about this. The average liquid savings for US family is 15 K, and the U. S debt is now 111% of GDP. So we've been applying Kenzie and Economics for a while now. I'm gonna say it seems to have been working. Think about the predictions of inflation after the 8 4000 and nine crisis. They proved to be wrong. But my concern is I don't see how we grow our way out of this debt, and I worry about that. I've worried about this for a long time, but look, we're knee deep into it and it looks like there's no turning back so well, I'll try to keep my rhetoric to a minimum and stay positive here because I think there is light at the end of the tunnel. We're starting to see some some good opportunities emerging here just in terms of flattening the curve and the like. One of the things that pretty positive about is there gonna be some permanent changes from Cove it. It's kind of ironic that this thing hit as we're entering a new decade decade and as I said before, I expect digital transformations to be accelerated because of this crisis and the many companies that have talked digital from the corner office. But I haven't necessarily really walked the walk, I think will now I think is going to be more cloud more subscription less wasted labor, more automation, more work from home unless big physical events, at least in the next couple of years. You're in Bahrain for Amazon Webster, is this summit our second summit? Um, here. Big news. Amazon Web services announced the availability of the region in the Middle East. I'm here with the chief of Public Sector Theresa Cross and vice President of Worldwide Public Sector. This is a huge milestone. This event one just in terms of the event. The interest across multiple countries in the region. Yes. And you have a new region with multiple availability zones? Yes, up and running. Congratulations. >> Hey, we launched the confetti today and yes, we're open for business and we do. It's a hyper scale region with three available the zones and lots of activity already here in the delays. But it really is a substantial kind of milestone because we started this sometime back in the Middle East, was one of the top regions around the world requested by our partners and customers. And now here we are. >> We've been talking with you for many, many years and I love interviewing you, but this one to me feels like it's not the weight off your shoulders. It's you're at the start line of another marathon. You've achieved so much with this because what's the first thing about Bart Rainey? We've reported on this on Select Angle and our other sites is that you get a lot of work here, is not just turning on a region. There's a lot of government commitment cloud first, full modernization, fintech banking systems, a full re platforming of a government and society and Amazons powering a lot of it and causing a lot of economic growth. So this is a big deal. >> It really is a big deal because, like you said, it really is about digital transformation here. And when I met the crown Prince in 2014 we had this conversation about really creating the economy here in a different way because Bob terrain itself, it's not oil rich country, but a smaller country with lots and lots of tourism. But in this region, while we haven't based here in Bahrain, this is truly a Middle East GCC region and but But part of that, the reason to start it here in my reign was that they really did take a lead in government transformation. As you heard them say, they're going all in shake Some on today talked about government is moving really fast, and they actually did the hard work to think about their telecommunications industry, their government regulations. They started with cloud first, and then they created all the write regulations to make this happen. So it is kind of phenomenal how quickly, in some ways, you know, feel slower than we'd like, But it's really moving quite fast. >> It's pretty fast. You should get a lot of kudos for that. I think you will. But I think to me what's interesting. The news here is that there is a balance between regulation and innovation going on, and regulation can be hampering innovation, some cases and not enough regulation. You have a Facebook situation or >> right so >> it's a balance. These guys have done it right. But to me, the tell sign is the fintech community, >> because that's where >> the money is. The central bank and then the ABC bank are all talking about a pea eye's all in with Amazon that's gonna create an ecosystem for innovation. Startups, et cetera. >> It totally isn't you heard Thean Vivid Jewel from ABC Bank today talk about their platform. What they're doing with clouds and the reason they chose a DBS was because we had this region of Bob Terrain, and they wanted to move quickly in. The regulations now have been updated in a way that actually allows them to do their banking applications in the lab. There's also a startup accelerator here, Fintech May, and they're doing a tenant work with new types of financial applications. So it's so exciting to see this kind of happening than the lace for I think a lot of people thought it would be much slower. We have a ways to go. It's still day one, for sure, but all the building blocks are getting there in the right place to really make this happen. >> You know, 80. Jessie's quoting the announcement you guys had just a couple weeks ago. Laura Angel And in July, the clouds of chance unlocked digital transmission. Middle East, says Andy chassis. Obviously unlocking is a key word because now you have customers from startups to large enterprises and ecosystem of a P M party. So the Ap N Group is here. Yes, So you have global I SUV's here and knew I s V's. You got the government and the education and to me, the news of the show. To me at least maybe it's not the big news, but is that you guys? They're offering a computer like a cloud computing degree. Yeah, for the first time about that news, >> you are right in terms of kind of every sector's picking at, but like in most places around the world, this is not unique. We need skills, and we've got to make sure that we're teaching the skills, working backwards from what the employer needs, like a TVs. So what? We've been here. We announced today we're launching our first cloud computing degree at the university of our terrain, and they're kind of thing. That's really unusual, John. They're going to do a phase one where they offer a cloud certification starting in early 2021 every program at the University of Bahrain, Whether you're in finance or banking, or business or health care or law, you can do this cloud computing certification, which gets you going and helps you understand how you last cloud in your business and then in the fall will be announcing the four year starting, the four year cloud computing degree, and that is in conjunction with our A DBS Educate program. And it will be all the right cloud skills that are needed to be successful. >> Talk about the demographics in this country because one of the things that's coming up is when I talk people in the doorways and it's a chance to talk to some local folks last night that that all in an Amazon, the theme is this. This younger generation yes, is here, and they have different expectations. They all want to work hard. They don't want to just sit back on their laurels and rest on their on their location. Here. They want to build companies they want to change. This is a key factor in the bottle rain modernization. Is that >> Yeah, generation well, all across the Middle East. The thing that's unique about the mill aces, the very young population you had millions of gamers across the Middle East as an example that comic con and Saudi like two years ago on that was one of the most popular things was fortnight. As soon as the region got at all the different gaming started taking place. But we want to create a culture of builders here, and the way you do that is what you said, John putting it into their hands, allowing these young people have the tools create a startup became entrepreneur, but they need to have access to these tools. And sometimes capital is often not that easy to get. So they want to make sure that the capital that they're given or that they have, whether it's bootstrap capital or venture capital, fending or whatever friends and family, they want to make sure that they can use that capital to the greatest advantage to build that company out. And I truly believe that this is gonna help them having an eight of us cloud region. I mean, you saw. Today we have 36 companies that launched their offering in the region on the day we actually announced so that they had specific offerings for the Middle East, which pretty exciting. I mean, that's a lot on day one. >> I mean, it's still day. One of you guys always say, but literally day one they were launching Yeah, I wanted to comment if you could just share some insights. I know, Um, your passion for, you know, entrepreneurship. You guys are also some skill development investing a lot of women in tech power panel this morning, there's major change going on. You guys were providing a lot of incentives, a lot of mentoring, this internships in conjunction with by rain. There's a lot of good things. Share some of the new things that you're working on, maybe deals you're talking about doing or >> way announced Thio kind of new things today. One is we have our we partake program, which I'm, of course, super passionate about. And that is about preventing tech learning and skills to women and underserved in representative communities. So we announced three other training programs here across the Middle East time. So those were put up today and you'll continue to see its role more and more of those out. And the other thing we did yesterday we announced a internship program with the minister of Youth here in Bahrain. That was shaped Nassir, who's a very famous He's that King san, and he's a very famous sportsmen. He does. He just won the Ironman Ironman and 2016. It was the world champion. He does endurance horse racing, so he's a He's a someone that the youth look at to here, and so he's doing all these programs. So we announced a partnership that were the first group doing the internship with this youth program, and so we're very excited. We're going to start that small and scale it, but we want to get these young people quickly and kind of get them excited. But here, what they focus on it is underrepresented communities. So it fits so nicely in with what we're doing with our attack. So you have both Oliver training our over 400 online courses that we offer with a dubious education academy. Now degree now our internship program and we protect. So, John, we're just getting going. I'm not saying that this is all will offer, but these are the things that were getting going with, and we need to make sure we also Taylor things like this Ministry of Youth program and sports at to the region in terms of water, their local needs, and we'll make sure that we're always looking >> at the entrance. Just just get him some great experience. Yes, so they can earn and feel good about themselves. This is kind of a key, exactly thing not just getting an internship, >> and it's, I think, locally it will be about teaching them to do that, disagree and commit really have that backbone to build that company and ask all those hard questions. So we're really going to try to indoctrinate them into the Amazon a TVs culture so we can help them be entrepreneurs like we are every day. >> And you got the data center, you got the city, the centers, you get the regions up and running, and architect, it perfectly suits up with people in it. Are you going to staff that with local talent, or is it gonna be Amazonian is coming in? What's the makeup of staff gonna be? What's the >> story? I mean, our goal is to hire as many local talent. We everywhere we go around the world. We want to get local talent because you can't yet if we did, First of all, we don't have enough people in our headquarters to bring folks in here, so we really have to train and educate. But locally, we have an office open here by rain. We haven't Office Open and Dubai and one down Saudi, and that is local talent. I mean, we are trying to use as much local talent and will continue to create that. And that's kind of the point. Jonas talking about the degree working backwards from what the employer needs. We want to give input because we think we also are getting good. Yeah, so we need to get the top. But we need those other individual employers that keep telling us we need more cloud skills to give that input. But, yeah, >> we're going to get a degree, migrate them into the job >> market, right quick like >> and educates. Been doing great. I learned a lot. This is a whole opportunity for people who want to make money, get a job. Amazon Web service is >> It's a place you could either work for us. Work for someone now, like even the government has a >> virus. Make a person tomorrow >> there. Yet >> we had one, >> but the point of being a builder, what we're seeing more and more John are these companies and government entities are building their talent internally. They're not outsourcing everything anymore, and the whole culture at being a builder, not just outsourcing all that. And that's what eight of us really helps all these entities. D'oh is moved quicker by having kind of some in house talent and not outsourcing everything to slow you down. That >> really thank ABC pointed that out beautifully in his point was, Hey, I'm gonna you know, I'm all in on AWS. We have domain expertise, We have data. That's our intellectual property. We're going to use that and be competitive and partner. And >> yes, and the new models it is. And that I p stays in house with that company or entity or government organization. It was so fun for me today to hear Shake some on from Maggie. A talk about the government is moving fast, and I think that's an example of a really are they figured out clown helps him just go a lot faster and save many security. >> I'm glad you brought that up. I know you got a short time here, but I want one last point in. We've been talking a lot about modernization of government, your success with C i a United States jet I contract still under consideration. All this going on you're experiencing by ranges and, um, unbelievable, fast moving government. They kind of get it. United States some places gets it. This is really about focusing in on the workloads. What have you learned? As you've been engaging these modernization efforts with governments summer slow, some of political ramifications behind. No one wants to lose. Old guard will hold onto the rails. We've seen that in the news, but this is coming fast. What are you learning? What do you >> take away its leadership? I mean, at the end of the day, all these things were driven by a very strong leaders. And even you can see everybody today on stage. It is leaders that make a decision that they wanted a faster and they want to modernize but have the capabilities. No matter if you're the U. S. Department of Defense. Ah, yes. Health and human resource is National Health Service in the UK or RG a hearing by rain, the government's or enterprises that we work with around the world. The key is leadership. And if there's that leader that is really strong and says we're moving, did you actually see organizations move a lot faster if you see people kind of waffle anger. I'm not sure, you know, that's when you can see the slowness. Wow, What I will tell you is from the early days of starting this business in 2010 the individuals that always move fastest for the mission owners because the mission owners of whatever the business West at a governmental level or enterprise, they said, we need to keep our mission going. So that's the reason they wanted to walk through this transformation. >> And now, I think, with developers coming in and started to see these employees for these companies saying, No, no, what's the reason why we can't go fast? That's right now a groundswell of pressure you see in both government, public sector and commercial. >> And you saw Mark Allen today on stage talking about security. It iss literally day. Zero thing for us, and the reason a lot of our customers are meeting faster now is because of security. Cloud is more secure in their meeting to the cloud for security because they feel like they could both optimize, move faster for workloads, and now they have security. Uh, and we've really just bought came down to what is the bit viable business model? We all were all entrepreneurs and we had looking for a new opportunity. Does with a lot of people coming into this industry with those with any innovation, lots of opportunities arise. And we've looked at the world and the world had many exchanges that were the most successful businesses in this industry. The exchanges facilitating the trade that was the most interest. That was the highest demand. That was the real use case. And we found that, um, there were exchanges popping up from around the world, but they weren't here any in the in the Middle East yet, And perhaps it was due to a regulatory, uncertain see or other difficulties of coming into this market. But Bahrain really opened up for us and we met with the Central Bank of Bahrain about three or four years ago and things really got started from there. >> And being a marketplace, you gotta have a lot of, you know, governance. It's all a lot of regulatory pressures from the folks that started. People who watch the Cube know that we've been very bullish on Krypton. We love Blockchain as an underlying technology. Yeah, that's, um, sustainability issues around Bitcoin and others. We recognize that, but in general this is a wave that cannot be denied. The moneys flow, right? So money's flowing in Kryptos, you scripted a crypto. You guys have the Fiat piece of it. So this brings on the first kind of liquidity opportunity in crypto thio. Real money? >> Yeah, absolutely. So that's our main goal is we're serving both retail and institutions and we believe there's going to be a lot of traffic from the traditional finance world, from institutions and individual investors into the crypt, a world and the opposite as well. A lot of people had challenges with taking the profits out of exchanges and withdrawing them to their bank in a regulatory compliant way. And that's really what we're solving here for the lowest fees in the region. >> But rain, once the blubbering, was to be modern society. They're going all in on cloud computing. They want to be a cloud country. They're open to new ideas. What attracted you, these guys? What made them different as it was that their vision was their posture on oversight? What was some of the things that make makes it work here? >> Well, at first it was the reception The behind central bank had a fintech unit already in in 2000 I think set a release 2017. So that was great. I think other central banks around the region and the world we're just starting. Then there was the behind fintech beh ah, dedicated working space for fintech companies here. So the ecosystem and the reception was really what attracted us at the beginning, other than knowing that Bahrain was a good financial hub for quite some time for the region. So we joined the Bahrain, um, Central banks regulatory sandbox which allowed us to experiment and test whether we can do this in a safe and secure way. And about a year and 1/2 later, uh, central bank drafted the regulations. Four crypto asset exchanges, brokerages s. So now that the regulation have got drafted and published, we graduated from the sandbox. Thankfully, and we were allowed to apply for the license shortly after we applied. We we earned the license. Thankfully. >> So what's next? What's goes on now? You do a lot of get a lot of work, A lot of coding. Gotta make sure the fintech compliance a lot of hurdles there. Yeah, I can understand that. What's now next? Got the regulation place? Yep. You'd expand. What's the plan? >> Well, we announced the license and Ah, a tte the same time, we also announced closing our seed round. So with that, we were able to grow our team the past month from, um, 8 to 9 people to 15 to 17 people now, and just more and more joining on board every day and are really our focus is growth. Now we're out of the sandbox. We don't have the limitations of the sandbox we had before, and we have banking relationships already made with different Banks s. So now we're just trying to reach out for the market. So we have grown our customer support team growing our engineering team hiring and comply a compliance officer, um, and other growth aspect. Just moving forward, >> getting up the basics of the business. That's right. What's your target audience gonna be? The inside solutions at first retail. What's the target audience? It's >> really both. It depends on what the market is providing. We've see institutional demand that has always relied on. When we spoke with institutions, they always relied on getting the license first because they don't want to operate with anyone unlike since, which makes it ah, you know, really interesting, because that means they haven't been able to get into the digital asset of crypto asset world the past few years while it's going up and down. So we we see ah, 50 50 divide most likely and what's going to be similar ratio than the rest of the world. But right now it's a lot of retail. Customers >> feel great to get your perspective here. It's even in the space. For a while, we saw the fire hype cycle go up, then the wet blanket Crypto Winter hit? Yeah, in the United States. Certainly it put a clamp down on most I CEOs. The SEC is right looking at a bunch of stars behavior, you know, Pretty Wild West is they call it, but an internationally still been pretty active even in the crypt A winter Go back, say 2018 Go back Last year on March it kind of stopped, got cold and then frosted over. Now it's been a block of ice. If you descript a winter, what's your take on it? What's the vibe? Internationally, I'll see Still money still flowing Bitcoins over 10,000 I think this morning, but still a lot of activity. Yes, some tokens have fallen away. Some are staying around. What's your assessment? >> So we've seen a lot of ah cycles. If you've been in this industry for 567 years, you'll see that we've had multiple of these winters, some of them lost, lasting longer than others on dhe. This late last one didn't didn't last as long as the one before. So what we really every time we see a ah boom, we have ah lot of media and a lot of people coming in brand new, trying to educate themselves about What is this? So we see just on everlasting cycle of just expansion on dhe. The price right now is not at the all time high, but it's still considered pretty significant at the beginning of the year was only about three or $4000. Right now it's about 10,000 and $100 for for a Bitcoin a cz with the eye CEOs. There have been a lot of concerns, rightfully so, because anyone can whip out a token and start selling it almost a security. But the central banker behind has a list of acceptable crypto assets that they will allow us to list. So right now we only have four crypto currencies are assets Bitcoin like coin ethereum and X R P. But nothing more than that at the time. And we hope to add more in the future. >> Ripples been taken some hits lately in the U. S. What about Eos and some of the other ones around the coin gets a corner, get some growth, you seeing some new things. How you guys gonna be evaluating some of these other new currencies? Is there a formula, you keep an eye on them. What's the consisted of concensus? What's that >> right? So we are agnostic to choosing the crypto asset that the color customers want to invest in it. If the central bank of behind accept this as secure liquid enough and, um, essentially time tested as well, For if it's been around for, let's say, 3 to 5 years with no network issues, then maybe retail customers can invest in it. But if it if it is just came up a brand new, we might come up. It's not time tested. Security wise, um, it hasn't gone through some certain pressures that are necessary for a network for payments are storing of value. >> So the central bank makes the decision on what they're gonna accept. What they >> listed in viable. That's right. But we we take customer input all the time. We started with just three, and then we had a lot of demand for exactly here in the region, and way listed it after getting improved. >> So we can't get Cube coin up there, can we? >> It defends the eyes that thinks he's coming. Okay, coming for two years in a row, knows >> what's coming. What's your final thoughts? The entrepreneurs out there because it's a lot of activity. This is one of those things where persistence really matters. No, your space Stay humble. Yeah, deal with these cycles because they are happening right? There is a There is a high velocity of cycles seasons, if you will, winter and summer. >> Well, I really think people should be should be more calculated to think long term with this technology. A lot of people are trying to make a quick buck or just make something, um, thinking that it's just a quick way to make money. But I really think people should educate themselves, both the entrepreneurs and the the retail investors that, uh, you know about the market about the technology so they can really see where the use cases might be of most need to the market. >> Talk about your, uh, your expansion plans. You have to to co founders in the US You're the co founders in Egypt. Is there gonna be a remote team? Is it going to be in by rain? What's the what's the hiring look like? Where's that where people will be located. >> So most of our if not all, of our customer support. Our client service agents are here in the in Bahrain. Um, we have the phone co founders now the to Joseph and a J from the Bay area there in behind as well here for the majority of the year there in the office. Now, um, the the engineering team, however, is a little scattered. Sometimes we we find we're security is a really high priority for us. It's the number one priority for us, as any Cryptocurrency exchange would be. So we re really scout talent and from the U. S. From Canada from other places around the world. Eso our engineering team is based in the Bay Area and other places in the U. S. Um, aside from Joseph, who leads it, who's the co founder here and behind. And the rest of the business and customer team is here behind. >> So really, the gating factor on hiring is making sure security's number one. So it's not so much. Get people filled in an office on the engineering front. >> No, it's definitely way. Look for high quality candidates, so that's our priority. We may be a small team, but they're all superstars. To be honest, >> what's been the biggest challenge that you guys have to overcome in this process because it's tough to get the license wasn't just being patient was. It's the diligence. What were some of the things that you overcame that were challenges? >> Well, it's it's definitely it definitely was a challenge to talk to. Ah, lot of regulators in the region. In general, Bahrain was by far the most cooperative. So right now the challenge is perhaps talking to other regulators when you talk expansion plans, we hoped we are serving the whole Middle East here from the from behind. But we'd idly, ideally want to also set up banking in Kuwait or youe or Saudi just so we can have better, quicker, on and off ramps for the customers. They're >> one of the big stories out. See Amazon Web service. It has a region here, um, pretty important. Pretty big deal. What's your take on what you think is gonna do for the region having a Amazon region multiple availability zones? What's that going to do for the entrepreneurship equation? >> I mean, it's fantastic. You see a lot of excitement here from entrepreneurs in the region and especially with regulation. How about having customer data stored here in the region? Um, it's really going to help. A lot of entrepreneurs also mitigate, You know, any downtime from hosting it in other places? >> New generation of entrepreneurship Hitting the scene here, isn't it? >> Yeah, it's really exciting. Lots of funding going around. Lots of ideas. Pretty really, really exciting for all entrepreneurs. >> Fail fast. Dell Technology World's series of announcements Cloud ability, unified work spaces and then multi cloud with, uh, watershed announced with Microsoft support for VMware with Azure are guests here theCUBE alumni that Seo, senior leader of'Em Where Sanjay *** and such a great to see you, >> John and Dave always a pleasure to be on your show. >> So before we get into the hard core news around Microsoft because you and Satya have a relationship, you also know Andy Jassy very well. You've been following the Clouds game in a big way, but also as a senior leader in the industry and leading BM where, um, the evolution of the end user computing kind of genre, that whole area is just completely transformed with mobility and cloud kind of coming together with data and all this new kinds of applications. The modern applications are different. It's changing the game on how end users, employees, normal people use computing because some announcement here on their What's your take on the ever changing role of cloud and user software? >> Yeah, John, I think that our vision , as you know, it was the first job I came to do at VMware almost six years ago, to run and use a computing. And the vision we had at that time was that you should be able to work at the speed of life, right? You and I happen to be on a plane at the same time yesterday coming here, we should be able to pick our amps up on our devices. You often have Internet now even up at thirty thousand feet. In the consumer world, you don't lug around your CDs, your music, your movies come to you. So the vision of any app on any device was what we articulated with the digital workspace We. had Apple and Google very well figured out. IOS later on Mac, Android, later on chrome . The Microsoft relationship in end use the computing was contentious because we overlapped. They had a product, PMS and in tune. But we always dreamed of a day. I tweeted out this morning that for five and a half years I competed with these guys. It was always my dream to partner with the With Microsoft. Um, you know, a wonderful person, whom I respect there, Brad Anderson. He's a friend, but we were like LeBron and Steph Curry. We were competing against each other. Today everything changed. We are now partners. Uh, Brad and I we're friends, we'll still be friends were actually partners now why? Because we want to bring the best of the digital workspace solution VMware brings workspace one to the best of what Microsoft brings in Microsoft 365 , active directory, E3 capabilities around E. M. S and into it and combined those together to help customers get the best for any device. Apple, Google and Microsoft that's a game changer. >> Tell about the impact of the real issue of Microsoft on this one point, because is there overlap is their gaps, as Joe Tucci used to say, You can't have any. There's no there's no overlap if you have overlapped. That's not a >> better to have overlapped and seems right. A gaps. >> So where's the gaps? Where this words the overlapping cloud. Next, in the end user world, >> there is a little bit of overlap. But the much bigger picture is the complementarity. We are, for example, not trying to be a directory in the Cloud That's azure active directory, which is the sequel to Active Directory. So if we have an identity access solution that connect to active directory, we're gonna compliment that we've done that already. With Octo. Why not do that? Also inactive Directory Boom that's clear. Ignored. You overlap. Look at the much bigger picture. There's a little bit of overlap between in tune and air Watch capabilities, but that's not the big picture. The big picture is combining workspace one with E. M s. to allow Office 365 customers to get conditional access. That's a game, so I think in any partnership you have to look past, I call it sort of these Berlin Wall moments. If the U. S and Soviet Union will fighting over like East Germany, vs West Germany, you wouldn't have had that Berlin wall moment. You have to look past the overlaps. Look at the much bigger picture and I find the way by which the customer wins. When the customer wins, both sides are happy. >> Tearing down the access wall, letting you get seamless. Access the data. All right, Cloud computing housely Multi cloud announcement was azure something to tell on stage, which was a surprise no one knew was coming. No one was briefed on this. It was kind of the hush hush, the big news Michael Delll, Pat Girl singer and it's nothing to tell up there. Um, Safia did a great job and really shows the commitment of Microsoft with the M wear and Dell Technologies. What is this announcement? First, give us your take an analysis of what they announced. And what does it mean? Impact the customers? >> Yeah, listen, you know, for us, it's a further That's what, like the chess pieces lining up of'Em wars vision that we laid up many years for a hybrid cloud world where it's not all public cloud, it isn't all on premise. It's a mixture. We coined that Tom hybrid loud, and we're beginning to see that realize So we had four thousand cloud providers starting to build a stack on VM, where we announced IBM Cloud and eight of us. And they're very special relationships. But customers, some customers of azure, some of the retailers, for example, like Wal Mart was quoted in the press, released Kroger's and some others so they would ask us, Listen, we're gonna have a way by which we can host BMO Workloads in there. So, through a partnership now with Virtue Stream that's owned by Dell on DH er, we will be able to allow we, um, where were close to run in Virtue Stream. Microsoft will sell that solution as what's called Azure V M, where solutions and customers now get the benefit of GMO workloads being able to migrate there if they want to. Or my great back on the on premise. We want to be the best cloud infrastructure for that multi cloud world. >> So you've got IBM eight of us Google last month, you know, knock down now Azure Ali Baba and trying you. Last November, you announced Ali Baba, but not a solution. Right >> now, it's a very similar solutions of easy solution. There's similar what's announced with IBM and Nash >> So is it like your kids where you loved them all equally or what? You just mentioned it that Microsoft will sell the VM wear on Azure. You actually sell the eight of us, >> so there is a distinction. So let me make that clear because everything on the surface might look similar. We have built a solution that is first and preferred for us. Called were MacLeod on a W s. It's a V m er manage solution where the Cloud Foundation stack compute storage networking runs on a ws bare metal, and V. Ember manages that our reps sell that often lead with that. And that's a solution that's, you know, we announced you were three years ago. It's a very special relationship. We have now customer attraction. We announce some big deals in queue, for that's going great, and we want it even grow faster and listen. Eight of us is number one in the market, but there are the customers who have azure and for customers, one azure very similar. You should think of this A similar to the IBM ah cloud relationship where the V C P. V Partners host VM where, and they sell a solution and we get a subscription revenue result out of that, that's exactly what Microsoft is doing. Our reps will get compensated when they sell at a particular customer, but it's not a solution that's managed by BM. Where >> am I correct? You've announced that I think a twenty million dollars deal last quarter via MacLeod and A W. And that's that's an entire deal. Or is that the video >> was Oh, that was an entirely with a customer who was making a big shift to the cloud. When I talked to that customer about the types of workloads, they said that they're going to move hundreds off their APs okay on premise onto via MacLeod. And it appears, so that's, you know, that's the type of cloud transformation were doing. And now with this announcement, there will be other customers. We gave an example of few that Well, then you're seeing certain verticals that are picking as yours. We want those two also be happy. Our goal is to be the undisputed cloud infrastructure for any cloud, any cloud, any AP any device. >> I want to get your thoughts. I was just in the analysts presentation with Dell technology CFO and looking at the numbers, the performance numbers on the revenue side Don Gabin gap our earnings as well as market share. Dell. That scales because Michael Delll, when we interviewed many years ago when it was all going down, hinted that look at this benefits that scale and not everyone's seeing the obvious that we now know what the Amazon scale winds so scale is a huge advantage. Um, bm Where has scale Amazon's got scale as your Microsoft have scales scales Now the new table stakes just as an industry executive and leader as you look at the mark landscape, it's a having have not world you'd have scale. You don't If you don't have scale, you're either ecosystem partner. You're in a white space. How do companies compete in this market? Sanjay, what's your thoughts on I thinkit's >> Jonah's? You said there is a benefit to scale Dell, now at about ninety billion in revenue, has gone public on their stock prices. Done where Dellvin, since the ideal thing, the leader >> and sir, is that point >> leader in storage leader inclined computing peces with Vienna and many other assets like pivotal leaders and others. So that scale VM, Where about a ten billion dollar company, fifth largest software company doing verywell leader in the softer to find infrastructure leader, then use a computing leader and softer, defined networking. I think you need the combination of scale and speed, uh, just scale on its own. You could become a dinosaur, right? And what's the fear that every big company should have that you become ossified? And I think what we've been able to show the world is that V M wear and L can move with scale and speed. It's like having the combination of an elephant and a cheetah and won and that to me special. And for companies like us that do have scaled, we've to constantly ask ourselves, How do we disrupt ourselves? How do we move faster? How do we partner together? How do we look past these blind spots? How do we pardon with big companies, small companies and the winner is the customer. That's the way we think. And we could keep doing that, you'll say so. For example, five, six years ago, nobody thought of VMware--this is going before Dell or EMC--in the world of networking, quietly with ten thousand customers, a two million dollar run rate, NSX has become the undisputed leader and software-defined networking. So now we've got a combination of server, storage and a networking story and Dell VMware, where that's very strong And that's because we moved with speed and with scale. >> So of course, that came to an acquisition with Nice Sarah. Give us updates on the recent acquisitions. Hep C e o of Vela Cloud. What's happening there? >> Yeah, we've done three. That, I think very exciting to kind of walk through them in chronological order about eighteen months ago was Velo Cloud. We're really excited about that. It's sort of like the name, velocity and cloud fast. Simple Cloud based. It is the best solution. Ston. How do we come to deciding that we went to talk to our partners like t other service providers? They were telling us this is the best solution in town. It connects to the data center story to the cloud story and allows our virtual cloud network to be the best softer. To find out what you can, you have your existing Mpls you might have your land infrastructure but there's nobody who does softer to find when, like Philip, they're excited about that cloud health. We're very excited about that because that brings a multi cloud management like, sort of think of it like an e r P system on top of a w eso azure to allow you to manage your costs and resource What ASAP do it allows you to manage? Resource is for materials world manufacturing world. In this world, you've got resources that are sitting on a ws or azure. Uh, cloud held does it better than anybody else. Hefty. Oh, now takes a Cuban eighty story that we'd already begun with pivotal and with Google is you remember at at PM world two years ago. And that's that because the founders of Cuban eighties left Google and started FTO. So we're bringing that DNA we've become now one of the top two three contributors to communities, and we want to continue to become the de facto platform for containers. If you go to some of the airports in San Francisco, New York, I think Keilani and Heathrow to you'LL see these ads that are called container where okay, where do you think the Ware comes from Vienna, where, OK, and our goal is to make containers as container where you know, come to you from the company that made vmc possible of'Em where So if we popularized PM's, why not also popularised the best enterprise contain a platform? That's what helped you will help us do >> talk about Coburn at ease for a minute because you have an interesting bridge between end user computing and their cloud. The service is micro. Services that are coming on are going to be powering all these APS with either data and or these dynamic services. Cooper, Nettie sees me the heart of that. We've been covering it like a blanket. Um, I'm gonna get your take on how important that is. Because back Nelson, you're setting the keynote at the Emerald last year. Who burn it eases the dial tone. What's the thoughts there? >> Yeah, First off, Listen, I think the world has begun to realize it is a world of containers and V ems. If you looked at the company that's done the most with containers. Google. They run their containers in V EMS in their cloud platform, so it's not one or the other. It's vote. There may be a world where some parts of containers run a bare metal, but the bulk of containers today run and Beyonce And then I would say, Secondly, you know, five. Six years ago, people all thought that Doctor was going to obliterate VM where, But what happened was doctors become a very good container format, but the orchestration layer from that has not become daugher. In fact, Cuban Eddie's is kind of taking a little of the head and steam off Dr Swarm and Dr Enterprise, and it is Cooper Navy took the steam completely away. So Senses Way waited for the right time to embrace containers because the obvious choice initially would have been some part of the doctor stack. We waited as Borg became communities. You know, the story of how that came on Google. We've embraced that big time, and we've stated a very important ball hefty on All these moves are all part of our goal to become the undisputed enterprise container platform, and we think in a multi cloud world that's ours to lose. Who else can do multi cloud better than VM? Where may be the only company that could have done that was Red Hat. Not so much now, inside IBM, I think we have the best chance of doing that relative. Let me first say that IBM Global Services GTS is one about top sai partners. We do a ton of really good work with them. Uh, I'm software re partner number different areas. Lennox, They've got parts of J Boss and Open Stack that I kind of, you know, not doing so well. But we do compete with open ship. That's okay, but we don't know when we can walk and chew gum so we can compete with Red Hat. And yet partner with IBM. That's okay. Way just need to be the best at doing containing platform is better than open shifter. Anybody, anything that red hat has were still partner with IBM. We have to be able to look at a world that's not black and white. And this partnership with Microsoft is a good example. >> It's not a zero sum game, and it's a huge market in its early days. Talk >> about what's up for you now. What's next? What's your main focus? What's your priorities? >> Listen, we're getting ready for VM World now. You know in August we want to continue to build momentum on make many of these solutions platforms. So I tell our sales reps, take the number of customers you have and add a zero behind that. OK, so if you've got ten thousand customers of NSX, how do we get one hundred thousand customers of insects. You have nineteen thousand customers of Visa, which, by the way, significantly head of Nutanix. How do we have make one hundred ninety thousand customers? And we have that base? Because we have V sphere and we have the Delll base. We have other partners. We have, I think, eighty thousand customers off and use of computing tens of millions of devices. How do we make sure that we are workspace? One is on billion. Device is very much possible. That's the vision. >> I think that I think what's resonating for me when I hear you guys, when you hear you talk when we have conversations also in Pat on stage talks about it, the simplification message is a good one and the consistency of operating across multiple environments because it sounds great that if you can achieve that, that's a good thing. How you guys get into how you making it simple to run I T. And consistent operating environment. It's all about keeping the customer in the middle of this. And when we listen to customs, all of these announcements the partnership's when there was eight of us, Microsoft, anything that we've done, it's about keeping the customer first, and the customer is basically guiding up out there. And often when I sit down with customers, I had the privilege of talking hundreds of thousands of them. Many of these CEOs the S and P five hundred I've known for years from S athe of'Em were they'LL Call me or text me. They want us to be a trusted advisor to help them understand where and how they should move in their digital transformation and compared their journey to somebody else's. So when we can bring the best off, for example, of developer and operations infrastructure together, what's called DEV Ops customers are wrestling threw that in there cloud journey when we can bring a multi device world with additional workspace. Customers are wrestling that without journey there, trying to figure out how much they keep on premise how much they move in the cloud. They're thinking about vertical specific applications. All of these places where if there's one lesson I've learned in my last ten twenty years of it has become a trusted advisor to your customers. Lean on them and they will lean on you on when you do that.
