(soft techno music) >> Good evening. Welcome back to the Kube. Live in Los Angeles. We are at KubeCon Cloud Native Con 2021. Lisa Martin with Dave Nicholson, rounding out our day. We're going to introduce you to a new company, a new company that's new to us. I should say, log DNA. Peter Choi joins us the VP of product. Peter, welcome to the program. >> Thanks for having me. >> (Lisa) Talk to us about log DNA. Who are you guys? What do you do? >> So, you know, log DNA is a log medicine platform. Traditionally, we've been focused on, you know, offering log analysis, log management capabilities to dev ops teams. So your classic kind of troubleshooting, debugging, getting into your systems. More recently, maybe in like the last year or so we've been focused on a lot of control functionality around log medicine. So what I mean by that is a lot of people typically think of kind of the analysis or the dashboards, but with the pandemic, we noticed that you see this kind of surge of data because all of the services are being used, but you also see a downward pressure on cost, right? Because all of a sudden you don't want to be spending two X on those digital experiences. So we've been focused really on kind of tamping down kind of controls on the volume of log data coming in and making sure that they have a higher kind of signal and noise ratio. And then, you know, I'll talk about it a little bit, but we've really been honing in on how can we take those capabilities and kind of form them more in a pipeline. So log management, dev ops, you know, focusing on log data, but moving forward really focused on that flow of data. >> (Dave) So, when you talk about the flow of data and logs that are being read, make this a little more real, bring it up, bring it up just to level in terms of data, from what? >> Yeah. >> What kind of logs? What things are generating logs? What's the relevant information that's being. Kept track of? >> Yeah, I mean, so from our perspective, we're actually agnostic to data source. So we have an assist log integration. We have kind of basic API's. We have, you know, agents for any sort of operating system. Funny enough people actually use those agents to install, log DNA on robots, right? And so we have a customer they're, you know, one of the largest E-commerce platforms on, in the, in the world and they have a warehouse robots division and they installed the agent on every single one of those robots. They're, you know, they're running like arm 64 processors and they will send the log data directly to us. Right? So to us, it's no different. A robot is no different from a server is no different from an application is no different from a router. We take in all that data. Traditionally though, to answer your question, I guess, in the simplest way, mostly applications, servers, firewalls, all the traditional stuff you'd expect kind of going into a log platform. >> So you mentioned a big name customer. I've got a guess as to who that is. I won't, I won't say, but talk to us about the observability pipeline. What is that? What are the benefits in it for customers? >> (Peter) Sure. So, like if we zoom out again, you know, you think about logs traditionally. I think a lot of folks say, okay, we'll ingest the logs. We'll analyze them. What we noticed is that there's a lot of value in the step before that. So I think in the earlier days it was really novel to say, Hey, we're going to get logs and we're going to put it into a system. We're going to analyze it. We're going to centralize. Right. And that had its merits. But I think over time it got a little chaotic. And so you saw a lot of the vendors over the last three years consolidating and doing more of a single pane of glass, all the pillars of observability and whatnot. But then the downside of that is you're seeing a lot of the teams that are using that then saying being constrained by single vendor for all the ways that you can access that data. So we decided that the control point being on the analysis side on, on the very far right side was constricting. So we said, okay, let's move the control point up into a pipeline where the logs are coming to a single point of ingress. And then what we'll do is we will offer views, but also allow you to stream into other systems. So we'll allow you to stream into like a SIM or a data warehouse or something, something like that. Right? So, and you know, we're still trying to like nail down the messaging. I'm sure our marketing person's going to roast me after this. But the simplest way to think of observability pipeline is it's the step before the analysis part, that kind of ingest processes and routes the data. >> (Dave) Yeah. This is the Kube, by the way, neither one of us is a weather reporter. (laughing) So, so the technical stuff is good with us. >> Yes. It is. What are, and talk to us about some of the key features and capabilities and maybe anything that's newly announced are going to be announced. >> Yeah. For sure. So what we recently announced early access on is our streaming capabilities. So it's something that we built in conjunction with IBM and with a couple of, you know, large major institutions that we were working with on the IBM cloud. And basically we realized as we were ingesting a log data, some of those consumers wanted to access subsets of that data and other systems such as Q radar or, you know, a security product. So we ended up taking, we filtered down a subset of that data and we stream it out into those systems. And so we're taking those capabilities and then bringing it into our direct product, you know, whatever you access via logging.com. That is what's essentially going to be the seed for the kind of observability pipeline moving forward. So when you start thinking about it, all of this stuff that I mentioned, where we say, we're focusing on control, like allowing you to exclude logs, allowing you to transform logs, you take those processing capabilities, you take the streaming capabilities, you put them together and all of a sudden that's the pipeline, right? So that's the biggest focus for us now. And then we also have supporting features such as, you know, control API's. We have index rate alerting so that you can get notified if you see aberrations in the amount of flow of data. We have things like variable retention. So when a certain subset of logs come in, if you want it store it for seven days or 30 days, you can go ahead and do that because we know that a large block of logs is going to have many different use cases and many different associated values, right? >> So let's pretend for a moment that a user, somebody who has spent their money on log DNA is putting together a Yelp review and they've given you five stars. >> Yup. >> What do they say about log DNA? Why did they give you that five star rating? >> Yeah. Absolutely. I think, you know, the most common one and it's funny it's Yelp because we actually religiously mine, our G2 crowd reviews. (all laughing) And so the thing that we hear most often is, it's ease of use, right? A lot of these tools. I mean, I'm sure, you know, you're talking to founders and product leaders every day with developers. Like the, the bar, the baseline is so low, you know, a lot of, a lot of organizations where like, we'll give them the, you know, their coders, they'll figure it out. We'll just give them docs and they'll figure it out. But we, we went a little bit extra in terms of like, how can we smooth that experience so that when you go to your computer and you type in QTPL, blah, blah, blah, two lines, and all of a sudden all your logs are shipping from your cluster to log DNA. So that's the constant theme for us in all of our views is, Hey, I showed up, I signed up and within 30 minutes I had everything going that I needed to get. >> (Lisa) So fast time to value. >> Yes. >> Which is critical these days. >> Absolutely. >> Talk to me. So here we are at, at KubeCon, the CNCF community is huge. I think I, the number I saw yesterday was 138,000 contributors. Lots of activity, because we're in person, which is great. We can have those hallway networking conversations that we haven't been able to have in a year and a half. What are some of the things that you guys have heard at the booth in terms of being able to engage with the community again? >> You know, the thing that we've heard most often is just like having a finger on the pulse. It's so hard to do that because you know, when we're all at our computers, we just go from zoom to zoom. And so it, it like, unless it punches you in the face, you're not aware of it. Right. But when you come here, you look around, you go, you can start to identify trends, you hear the conversations in the hallway, you see the sessions. It's just that, that sense of, it's almost like a Phantom limb that, that sense of community and being kind of connected. I think that's the thing that we've heard most often that people are excited. And, you know, I think a lot of us are just kind of treating this like a dry run. Like we're kind of easing our way back in. And so it, you know, it felt good to be back. >> Well, they've done a great job here, right? I mean, you have to show your proof of vaccination. They're doing temperature checks, or you can show your clear health pass. So they're making it. We were talking to the executive director of CNCF earlier today and you're making it, it's not rocket science. We have enough data to know that this can be done carefully and safely. >> (David) Don't forget the wristbands. >> That's right. And, and did you see the wristbands? >> (Peter) Oh yeah. >> Yeah, yeah that's great. >> Yep, it is great. >> I was, I was on the fence by the way. I was like, I was a green or yellow, depending on the person. >> (both) Yeah. >> Yeah. But giving, giving everybody the opportunity to socialize again and to have those, those conversations that you just can't have by zoom, because you have somebody you've seen someone and it jogs your memory and also the control of do I want to shake someone's hand or do I not. They've done a great job. And I think hopefully this is a good test in the water for others, other organizations to learn. This can be done safely because of the community. You can't replicate that on video. >> (Peter) Absolutely. And I'll tell you this one for us, this is our, this is our event. This is the event for us every single year. We, we it's the only event we care about at the end of the day. So. >> What are some of the things that you've seen in the last year, in terms of where, we were talking a lot about the, the adoption of Kubernetes, kind of, where is it in its maturation state, but we've seen so much acceleration and digital transformation in the last 18 months for every industry businesses rapidly pivoting multiple times to try to, to survive one and then figure out a new way to thrive in this, this new I'll call it the new. Now I'll borrow that from a friend at Citrix, the new now, not the new normal, the new now, what are some of the things that you've seen in the last year and a half from, from your customer base in terms of what have they been coming to you saying help? >> (Peter) You know, I think going back to the earlier point about time to value, that's the thing that a lot. So a lot of our customers are, you know, very big Kubernetes, you know, they're, they're big consumers of Kubernetes. I would say, you know, for me, when I do the, we do our, our QBRs with our top customers, I would say 80% of them are huge Kubernetes shops. Right. And the biggest bottleneck for them actually is onboarding new engineers because a lot of the, and you know, we have a customer, we have better mortgage. We have, IBM, we have Rappi is a customer of ours. They're like Latin American version of Instacart. They double their engineering base and you, you know, like 18 in 18 months. And so that's, you know, I think it was maybe from 1500 to 3000 developers or so, so their thing is like, we need to get people on board as soon as possible. We need to get them in these tools, getting access to, to, to their longs, to whatever they need. And so that's been the biggest thing that we've heard over and over again is A, how can we hire? And then B when we hire them, how do we onboard them as quickly as possible, so that they're ramped up and they're adding value. >> How do you help with that onboarding, making it faster, seamless so that they can get value faster? >> So for us, you know, we really lean in on our, our customer success teams. So they do, you know, they do trainings, they do best practices. Basically. We kind of think of ourselves given how much Kubernetes contradiction we have, we think of ourselves as cross pollinators. So a lot of the times we'll go into those decks and we'll try to learn just as much as we're trying to try to teach. And then we'll go and repeat that process through every single set of our customers. So a lot of the patterns that we'll see are, well, you know, what kinds of tools are you using for orchestration? What kind of tools are you using for deployment? How are you thinking about X, Y, and Z? And then, you know, even our own SRE teams will kind of get into the mix and, you know, provide tips and feedback. >> (Lisa) Customer centricity is key. We've heard that a lot today. We hear that from a lot of companies. It's one thing to hear it. It's another thing to see it. And it sounds like the Yelp review that you would have given, or, or what you're hearing through G2 crowd. I mean, that voice of the customer is valid. That's, that's the only validation. I think that really matters because analysts are paid. >> Yeah. >> But hearing that validation through the voice of the customer consistently lets you know, we're going in the right direction here. >> Absolutely. >> I think it's, it's interesting that ease of use comes up. You wonder if those are only anonymous reviews, you don't necessarily associate open source community with cutting edge, you know, we're the people on the pirate ship. >> (Peter) Yeah. And so when, when, when people start to finally admit, you know, some ease of use would be nice. I think that's an indication of maturity at a certain point. It's saying, okay, not everyone is going to come in and sit behind a keyboard and program things in machine language. Every time we want to do some simple tasks, let's automate, let's get some ease of use into this. >> And I'll tell you in the early days it drove me and our, our CEO talker. It drove us nuts that people would say easiest to be like, that's so shallow. It doesn't mean anything. Well, you know, all of that. However, but to your point, if we don't meet the use case, if we don't have the power behind it, the ease of use is abstracting away. It's like an iceberg, right. It's abstracting away a lot. So we can't even have the ease of use conversation unless we're able to meet the use case. So, so what we've been doing is digging into that more, be like, okay, ease of use, but what were you trying to do? What, what is it that we enabled? Because ease of use, if it's a very shallow set of use cases is not as valid as ease of use for petabytes of data for an organization like IBM. Right? >> That's a great, I'm glad that you dug into that because ease of use is one of those things that you'll see it in marketing materials, but to your point, you want to know what does this actually mean? What are we delivering? >> Right. >> And now, you know what you're delivering with Peter, thank you for sharing with us about logged in and what you guys are doing, how you're helping your community of customers and hearing the voice of the customer through G2 and others. And we're here covering Postgres Vision 2021. The virtual version, thCUBE virtual, if you will. And welcome to our power-panel. Now in this session, we'll dig into database modernization. We want to better understand how and why customers are tapping open source to drive innovation. But at the same time, they've got to deliver the resiliency and enterprise capabilities that they're used to that are now necessary to support today's digital business requirements. And with me are three experts on these matters. Abdul Sheik, is Global CTO and President of Cintra. Young Il Cho, aka Charlie, is High Availability Cluster Sales Manager, at Daone CNS. And Alan Villalobos, is the Director of Development Partnerships, at IBM. Gentlemen, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you, Dave, nice to be here. >> Thank you, Dave. >> All right, let's talk trends and frame the problem. Abdul, I want to start with you? Cintra you're all about this topic. Accelerating innovation using EDB Postgres helping customers move to modern platforms. And doing so, you got to do it cost-effectively but what's driving these moves? What are the problems that you're seeing at the organizations that you serve? >> Oh, so let me quickly introduce, Abdul Sheik, CTO. I'll quickly introduce Cintra. So we are a multicloud and database architecture MSP. And we've been around for 25 plus years. Headquartered in New York and the UK. But as a global organization, we're serving our SMB customers as well as large enterprise customers. And the trends we're seeing certainly in this day and age is transformation and modernization. And what that means is, customers looking to get out of the legacy platforms, get out of the legacy data centers and really move towards a modern strategy with a lower cost base, while still retaining resiliency and freedom. Ultimately, in terms of where they're going. The key words that really I see driving this, number one is choice. They've been historically locked into vendors. With limited choice with a high cost base. So choice, freedom to choose in terms of what database technologies they apply to which workloads and certainly EDB and the work that has been done to closely marry what enterprise RD platforms offer with EDBs in a work that they've done in terms of filling those gaps and addressing where the resiliency monitoring performance and security requirements are, are certainly are required from an enterprise customer perspective. Choice is driving the move that we see and choice towards a lower cost platform that can be deployed anywhere. Both on-prem modernization customers are looking to retain on premise platforms or moving into any multi clouds whether it's an infrastructure cloud play or a platform cloud play. And certainly with EDBs offering in terms of, you know the latest cloud native offerings also very interesting. And lastly, aside from just cost and the freedom to choose where they deploy those platforms the SLA, the service level model where is the resiliency requirement where the which system is going to bronze, silver, gold? Which ones are the tier one revenue platform revenue generating platforms which are the lower, lower utility platforms. So a combination of choice, a combination of freedom to deploy anywhere and while still maintaining the resiliency and the service levels that the customers need to deliver to their businesses >> Abdul that was a beautiful setup. And, and we've got so much to talk about here because customers want to move from point A to point B but getting there and they, they need help. It's sometimes not trivial. So Charlie Daone is a consultancy. You've got a strong technical capabilities. What are you seeing in this space? You know, what are the major trends? Why are organizations considering that move? And what are some of the considerations there? >> Well, like in other country in South Korea or so our a lot of customers, banking's a manufacturing distributor. They are 90, over 90%. They are all are using Oracle DB and a rack system. But as the previous presenters pointed out, a lot of customers that are sick of the Oracle and they have to undergo the huge cost of a maintenance costs. They want to move away from this cost stress. And secondly, they can think about they're providing service to customer on their cloud base which is a private or the public. So we cannot imagine running on database, Oracle database running on the cloud the system that's not matches on this cloud. And first and second, and finally the customer what they want is the cost and they want to move away from the Oracle locking. They cannot be just a slave at Oracle for a long time and the premium for the new cloud the service for the customer. >> Great. Thank you for that. Oh, go ahead. Yeah. Did you have something else to add Charlie go ahead and please. >> No that's all. >> Okay, great. Yeah, Allen, welcome to theCUBE. You know, it's very interesting to us. IBM, you, you, of course, you're a big player in database. You have a lot of expertise here. And you partner with EDB, you're offering Postgres to customers, you know, what are you seeing? Charlie was talking about Oracle and RAC. I mean, the, the, the thing there is obviously, we talked about the maintenance costs but there's also a lot of high availability capabilities. That's something that IBM really understands well. Do you see this as largely a cloud migration trend? Is it more modernization? Interested in what's IBM's perspective on this? >> I think modernization is the right word. The points that the previous panelists brought up or are on point, right? You know, lower TCO or lower costs in general but that of agility and then availability for developers and data scientists as well. And then of course, you know, hybrid cloud, right? You know, you want to be able to deploy on prem or in the cloud, or both in a mixture of all of that. And I think, I think what ties it together is the customers are looking for insights, right? And, you know, especially in larger organizations there's a myriad of data sources that they're already working with. And, you know, we, you know we want to be able to play in that space. We want to give an offering that is based on Postgres and open source and be able to further what they're strong at at and kind of, you know on top of that, you know, a layer of, of of need that we see is, is seamless data governance across all of those different stores. >> All right, I'm going to go right to the heart of the hard problem here. So if, I mean, I want to, it's just that I want to get from point A to point B, I want to save money. I want to modernize, but if I'm the canary in the coal mine at the customer, I'm saying guys, migration scares me. How do I do that? What are the considerations? And what do I need to know that I don't know. So Abdul, maybe you could walk us through what are some of the concerns that customers have? How do you help mitigate those? Whether it's other application dependencies, you know freezing code, you know, getting, again from that point A to point B without risking my existing business processes how do you handle that? >> Yeah, certainly I think a customer needs to understand what the journey looks like to begin with. So we've actually developed our own methodology that we call Rocket Cloud, which is also part of our cloud modernization strategy that builds in and database modernization strategy built into it starts with an assessment in terms of current state discovery. Not all customers totally understand where they are today. So understanding where the database state is, you know where the risks lie what are the criticality of the various databases? What technologies are used, where we have RAC or we don't have RAC but we have data God, where we have encryption. And so on. That gives the customer a very good insight in terms of the current state, both commercially and technically that's a key point to understand how they're licensed today and what costs could be freed up to free the journey to effectively fund the journey. It's a big, big topic, but once we do that, we get an idea and we've actually developed a tool called rapid discovery. That's able to discover a largest stake without knowing the database list. We just put the scripts at the database servers themselves and it tells us exactly which databases are suited to be you know, effectively migrated to Postgres with in terms of the feature function usage in terms of how heavy they are, would store procedures in the database amount of business logic use of technologies like RAC data guard and how they convert over to to Postgres specifically. That ultimately gives us the ability to give that customer an assessment and that assessment in a short sharp few weeks and get the customer view of all of my hundreds of databases. Here are the subset of candidates for Postgres and specifically than we do the schemer advisor tool the actual assessment tool from EDB, which gives us a sense of how well the schema gets converted and how best to then also look at the stored procedure conversion as well. That gives the customer a full view of their architecture mapping their specific candidate databases and then a cost analysis in terms of what that migration looks like and how we migrate. We also run and maintain those platforms once we're on EDB. >> Thank you for that again, very clear but so you're not replacing, doing an organ transplant. You may, you're you're, you know, this is not I don't mean this as a pejorative, but you're kind of cherry picking those workloads that are appropriate for EDB and then moving those and then maybe, maybe through attrition or, you know over time, sun-setting those other, those other core pieces. >> Exactly. >> Charlie, let me ask you, so we talked about RAC, real application clusters, data guard. These are, you know kind of high profile Oracle capabilities. Can you, can you really replicate the kind of resiliency at lower costs with open source, with EDB Postgres and how do you do that? >> It's my turn? >> yes, please. >> Quite technically, again, I go on in depths and technically the RAC, RAC system is so-called is the best you know, best the tool to protect data and especially in the Unix system, but apart from the RAC by the some nice data replication solution we just stream the application and log shipping and something and then monitor Pam and, and EFM solution which is enterprise failover manager. So even though it be compared to Apple the Apple RAC versus with EDB solution, we can definitely say that RAC is more stable one, but after migration, whatever, we can overcome the, you know, drawbacks of the HA cluster system by providing the EDB tools. So whatever the customer feel that after a successful migration, utilizing the EDB high availability failable solution they can make of themselves at home. So that's, that's how we approach it with the customers. >> So, Alan, again, to me, IBM is fascinating here with your level of involvement because you're the, you guys are sort of historically the master of proprietary the mainframes, VCM, CICF, EB2, all that stuff. And then, you know IBM was the first I remember Steve Mills actually announced we're going to invest a billion dollars in open source with Linux. And that was a major industry milestone. And of course, the, the acquisition of red hat. So you've got now this open source mindset this open source culture. So we, you know, as it's all about recovery in, in database and enterprise database and all the acid properties in two phase commits, and we're talking about, you know the things that Charlie just talked about. So what's your perspective here? IBM knows a lot about this. How do you help customers get there? >> Yeah, well, I mean the main, the main thrust right now IBM has a offering called IBM cloud Pak for data which from here, which runs EDB, right? EDB, Postgres runs on top of cloud Pak for Data But the, you know I think going back to Abdul's points about, you know migrating whatever's needed and whatever can be migrated to Postgres and maybe migrating other things other places, we have data virtualization and autoSQL, right? So once you have migrated those parts of your database or those schemes that can be, having, you know a single point where you can query across them and by the way, being able to query across them you know, before, during and after migration as well. Right? So we're kind of have that seamless experience of layer of SQL. And now with autoSQL of spark SQL as well, as you're, as you're migrating and after is, I'd say, you know, key to this. >> What, what's the typical migration look like? I know I'm sorry, but it's a consultant question but thinking about the, you know, the average, in terms of timeframe, what are the teams look like? You know who are the stakeholders that I need to get involved? If I'm a customer to really make this a success? maybe Abdul, you could talk about that and Charlie and Alan can chime in. >> Well, I think, well, number one you knew the exact sponsors bought into it in terms of the business case, supporting the business case an architect has got a big picture understanding not only database technology but also infrastructure that they're coming from as well as the target cloud platforms and how you ensure that the infrastructure can deliver the performance. So the architect role is important, of course the core DBA that lives within the scope of the database understands the schema of the data model the business logic itself, and the application on it. That's key specifically around the application certification testing connectivity and the migration of the code. And specifically in terms of timeline just to touch on that quickly. I mean, in our experience so far and we're seeing the momentum really really take off the last 18 months, a small project with limited business logic within the database itself can we migrate it in a couple of months but typically with all the testing and rigor around that you typically say three months timeline a medium-sized complexity projects, a six month timeline and a large complex project could be anything from nine months and beyond, but it really comes down to how heavy the database is with business logic and the database and how much effort it will take to re-engineer effectively migrate that PLC code, business logic into EDB given the compatibility level between Oracle and EDB it's relatively certainly an easier path than any other target platform in terms of options. Yeah. Not perspective. That's certainly looks like the composition of a team and timeline >> Charlie or Alan, anything you guys would add. >> Yeah. So, so I think all those personas make sense. I think you might, on the consumer side of the consumer the consumer of the data side the data scientists often we see, you know during migrations and then obviously the dev ops, I think or any operations, right, have to be heavily involved. And then lastly, you know, you see more and more data steward role or data steward type persona, CDO office type type person coming in there make sure that, you know, whatever data governance that is already in place or wants to be in place after the migration is also part of the conversation. >> Why EDB? You know, there's a lot of databases out there you know, it's funny, I always say like, you know, 10, 15 years ago databases were kind of sort of a boring market, right? It was like, okay, you're going to work or whatever. And now it's exploded. You got open source databases, you got, you know not only sequel databases, you got graph databases you know, you get cloud databases, it's going crazy. Why EDB? You wonder if you guys could address that? >> Allan why don't you go first this time? I'll compliment your answers. >> Yeah. I mean, again, I think it goes back to, to the, the I guess varying needs and, and enterprises. Right. And I think that's, what's driven this explosion in databases, whether it's a document store like you're saying, or, or new types of RDBMS, the needs that we talked about at the beginning, like lower TCO, and the push to open source. But you know, the fact of the matter is that that yes, there is a myriad, an ecosystem of databases, pretty much any organization. And so, yeah, we want to tap into that. And why EDB? EDB has done a great job of taking Postgres and making it enterprise ready, you know, that's what they're, they're good at and that, you know fits very nicely with the IBM story obviously. And, and so, you know, and they've they've worked with us as well. They have an operator on, on the runs on red hat OpenShift. So that makes it portable as well but also part of the IBM cloud Pak for data story. And, and yeah, you know, we want to break down those silos. We realized that that need is there for all of these, you know, there's this ecosystem of databases. And so, you know, we're, we see our role as being that platform, whether it's red hat OpenShift, or IBM cloud Pak for data that, that unifies, and kind of gives you that single pane of glass across all of those sources. >> And Charlie, you're obviously all in, you've got EDB in your background. Why EDB for you? >> Before talking about EDB you asked about the previous question about how the migration was different from Oracle to EDB. We had a couple of success story in Korea telecom and some banking area, and it was easier. So EDB provide MTK tool as a people know but it was an appropriate, like a 90%. So we are the channel partner of the EDB for four years. So what we have done was to hire the Oracle expert. So we train Oracle export as as EDB expert at the same time so that they can approach customer and make it easy. So you have no worry about that. Just migrating EDB, Oracle to EDB. There is a no issue. Those telltales include all the tasks, you know Stratus test and trainee, and a POC that we there. So by investing that Oracle expert that we could overcome and persuade the customer to adopt EDB. So, why EDB? Simply I can say there, is there any database they can finally replaced Oracle in the world? Why is the, it's the interoperability between Oracle to EDB as the many experts pointed out there is no other DBE. They can, you know, 90, 90% in compatibility and intercooperability with EDB. That's why, of course, there's the somewhat, you know budget issues or maintenance issue cost the issue escape from Oracle lock-in. But I think the the number one reason was the interoperability and the compatibility with database itself, Oracle database. That was a reason, I guess >> Great Abdul we've talked about, we all know the, as is, you've got a high maintenance costs. You got a lot of tuning, and it's just a lot of complexity. What about the 2B maybe you could share with us sort of the outcome some of the outcomes you've seen what the business impact has been of some of these migrations? >> Sure. I mean, I'll give you a very simple example then just the idea of running Oracle on prem a lot of customer systems teams, for example will drive a virtualization VMware strategy. We know some of the challenges of running Oracle MBM where from a license perspective. So giving the business the ability where I want to go customer in the financial services market in New York, heavy virtualization strategy the ability for them to move away from Oracle on, you know expensive hardware on to Postgres EDB on virtualization just leverage existing skillsets, leveraging existing investment in terms of infrastructure, and also give them portability in AWS. The other clouds, you know, in terms of a migration. More from a business perspective as well, I would say about some of the Allan's points in terms of just freeing up the ability for data scientists and data consumers, to, you know, to consume some of that data from an Postgres perspective more accessibility spinning up environments quicker less latency in terms of the agility is another key word in terms of the tangible differences, the business, lower cost agility, and the freedom to deploy anywhere at the end of the day. Choices, I think the key word that we could come back to and knowing that we can do that to Charlie's point specifically around maintaining service levels. And as architects, we support some of the big, big names out there in terms of airlines, online, cosmetic retailers, financial services, trading applications, hedge funds, and they all want one thing as architect: for us to deliver that resiliency and stand behind them. And as the MSP we're accountable to ensure those systems are up and running and performing. So knowing that the EDB is provided the compatibility but also plugged the specific requirements around performance management, security availability that's fundamentally been key. >> [Dave I mean, having done a lot of TCO studies in this area, it's, it's it Oracle's different. You know, normally the biggest component of TCO is labor with Oracle. The biggest component of TCO is licensed and maintenance costs. So if you can virtualize and reduce those costs and of course, of course the Oracle will fight you and say we won't support it in a VMware environment. Of course, you know, they will, but, but you got to really, you got to battle. But, so here's my last question. So if I'm a customer in that state that you described you know, a lot of sort of Oracle sprawl a lot of databases out there, high maintenance costs, the whole lock-in thing. I got to choices. I, you know, a lot of choices out there. One is EDB. You guys have convinced me that you've got the expertise If I can partner with firms like yours, it's safer route. Okay, cool. My other choice is Oracle is going to, The Oracle sales reps is going to get me in a headlock and talk about exit data and how their Oracle cloud, and how it's, they've invested a lot there. And they have, and, I can pay by the drink all this sort of modern sort of discussion, you know, Oracle act like they invented it late to the game. And then here we are. So, so help me. What's the pitch as to, well, that's kind of compelling. It's maybe the safe bet they're there. They're working with my CIO, whatever. Why should I go with the open source route versus that route? It sounds kind of attractive to me, help me understand that each of you maybe take me through that. Abdul, why don't you start. >> Yeah. I'd say, you know, Oracle's being the defacto for so many years that people have just assumed and defaulted saying, high availability, RAC, DR. Data guard, you know, and I'll apply to any database need that I have. And at the end of the day customers have a three tier database requirement: the lowest, less critical, bronze level databases that really don't need RAC or a high availability, silver tier that are departmental solutions. That means some level of resiliency. And then you've got your gold revenue producing brand impact databases that are they're down. And certainly they won. You see no reason why the bronze and silver databases can be targeted towards EDB. Admittedly, we have some of our largest customers are running platforms, are running $5 million an hour e-commerce platform or airlines running large e-commerce platforms. And exit data certainly has a place. RAC has a place in those, in those scenarios. Were not saying that the EDB is a solution for everything in all scenarios, but apply the technology where it's appropriate where it's required and, you know, generally wherever Oracle has being the defacto and it's being applied across the estate, that's fundamentally what's changed. It doesn't have to be the only answer you have multiple choices now. EDB provides us with the ability to probably address, you know more than 50% of the databases' state, and comfortably cope with that and just apply that more expensive kind of gold tier one cost-based but also capability, you know from the highest requirements of performance and availability where it's appropriate. >> Yeah. Very pragmatic approach. Abdul, thank you for that. And Charlie. Charlie, what's your perspective? Give us your closing thoughts. >> Well, it has been, Oracle has been dominating in Asia in South Korea has market or over many years. So customers got tired of this, continuous spending money for the maintenance costs and there is no discount. There is no negotiation. So they want to move away from expensive stuff. And they were looking for a flexible platform with the easygoing and the high speed and performance open source database like a possibly as career. And now the EDB cannot replace a hundred percent of existing legacy worker, but 10%, 20% 50% as time goes on the trend that will continue. And it will be reaching some high point or replacing the existing Oracle system. And it can, it can also leading to good business chance to a channel partner and EDB steps and other related business in open source. >> Great. Thank you, Charlie and Allen, bring us home here. Give us your follow up >> I think my, co- panelists hit the nail on the head, right? It's a menu, right? That's as things become more diverse and as people make more choices and as everybody wants more agility, you have to provide, I mean, and so that, that's where that's coming in and I liked the way that Andul I kind of split it into gold silver and bronze. Yeah. And I think that that's where, we're going, right? I mean you should ask your developers right? Are your developers like pining to start up a new instance of Oracle every time you're starting a new project? Probably not reach for their Postgres right? And so, because of that, that's where this is coming from and that's not going to change. And, and yeah, that that ecosystem is going to continue to, to thrive. And there'll be lots of different flavors in the growing open source ecosystem. >> Yeah. I mean, open source absolutely is the underpinning you know, the, the bedrock of innovation, these days. And welcome to our power-panel. Now in this session, we'll dig into database modernization. We want to better understand how and why customers are tapping open source to drive innovation. But at the same time, they've got to deliver the resiliency and enterprise capabilities that they're used to that are now necessary to support today's digital business requirements. And with me are three experts on these matters. Abdul Sheik, is Global CTO and President of Cintra. Young Il Cho, aka Charlie, is High Availability Cluster Sales Manager, at Daone CNS. And Alan Villalobos, is the Director of Development Partnerships, at IBM. Gentlemen, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you, Dave, nice to be here. >> Thank you, Dave. >> All right, let's talk trends and frame the problem. Abdul, I want to start with you? Cintra you're all about this topic. Accelerating innovation using EDB Postgres helping customers move to modern platforms. And doing so, you got to do it cost-effectively but what's driving these moves? What are the problems that you're seeing at the organizations that you serve? >> Oh, so let me quickly introduce, Abdul Sheik, CTO. I'll quickly introduce Cintra. So we are a multicloud and database architecture MSP. And we've been around for 25 plus years. Headquartered in New York and the UK. But as a global organization, we're serving our SMB customers as well as large enterprise customers. And the trends we're seeing certainly in this day and age is transformation and modernization. And what that means is, customers looking to get out of the legacy platforms, get out of the legacy data centers and really move towards a modern strategy with a lower cost base, while still retaining resiliency and freedom. Ultimately, in terms of where they're going. The key words that really I see driving this, number one is choice. They've been historically locked into vendors. With limited choice with a high cost base. So choice, freedom to choose in terms of what database technologies they apply to which workloads and certainly EDB and the work that has been done to closely marry what enterprise RD platforms offer with EDBs in a work that they've done in terms of filling those gaps and addressing where the resiliency monitoring performance and security requirements are, are certainly are required from an enterprise customer perspective. Choice is driving the move that we see and choice towards a lower cost platform that can be deployed anywhere. Both on-prem modernization customers are looking to retain on premise platforms or moving into any multi clouds whether it's an infrastructure cloud play or a platform cloud play. And certainly with EDBs offering in terms of, you know the latest cloud native offerings also very interesting. And lastly, aside from just cost and the freedom to choose where they deploy those platforms the SLA, the service level model where is the resiliency requirement where the which system is going to bronze, silver, gold? Which ones are the tier one revenue platform revenue generating platforms which are the lower, lower utility platforms. So a combination of choice, a combination of freedom to deploy anywhere and while still maintaining the resiliency and the service levels that the customers need to deliver to their businesses >> Abdul that was a beautiful setup. And, and we've got so much to talk about here because customers want to move from point A to point B but getting there and they, they need help. It's sometimes not trivial. So Charlie Daone is a consultancy. You've got a strong technical capabilities. What are you seeing in this space? You know, what are the major trends? Why are organizations considering that move? And what are some of the considerations there? >> Well, like in other country in South Korea or so our a lot of customers, banking's a manufacturing distributor. They are 90, over 90%. They are all are using Oracle DB and a rack system. But as the previous presenters pointed out, a lot of customers that are sick of the Oracle and they have to undergo the huge cost of a maintenance costs. They want to move away from this cost stress. And secondly, they can think about they're providing service to customer on their cloud base which is a private or the public. So we cannot imagine running on database, Oracle database running on the cloud the system that's not matches on this cloud. And first and second, and finally the customer what they want is the cost and they want to move away from the Oracle locking. They cannot be just a slave at Oracle for a long time and the premium for the new cloud the service for the customer. >> Great. Thank you for that. Oh, go ahead. Yeah. Did you have something else to add Charlie go ahead and please. >> No that's all. >> Okay, great. Yeah, Allen, welcome to theCUBE. You know, it's very interesting to us. IBM, you, you, of course, you're a big player in database. You have a lot of expertise here. And you partner with EDB, you're offering Postgres to customers, you know, what are you seeing? Charlie was talking about Oracle and RAC. I mean, the, the, the thing there is obviously, we talked about the maintenance costs but there's also a lot of high availability capabilities. That's something that IBM really understands well. Do you see this as largely a cloud migration trend? Is it more modernization? Interested in what's IBM's perspective on this? >> I think modernization is the right word. The points that the previous panelists brought up or are on point, right? You know, lower TCO or lower costs in general but that of agility and then availability for developers and data scientists as well. And then of course, you know, hybrid cloud, right? You know, you want to be able to deploy on prem or in the cloud, or both in a mixture of all of that. And I think, I think what ties it together is the customers are looking for insights, right? And, you know, especially in larger organizations there's a myriad of data sources that they're already working with. And, you know, we, you know we want to be able to play in that space. We want to give an offering that is based on Postgres and open source and be able to further what they're strong at at and kind of, you know on top of that, you know, a layer of, of of need that we see is, is seamless data governance across all of those different stores. >> All right, I'm going to go right to the heart of the hard problem here. So if, I mean, I want to, it's just that I want to get from point A to point B, I want to save money. I want to modernize, but if I'm the canary in the coal mine at the customer, I'm saying guys, migration scares me. How do I do that? What are the considerations? And what do I need to know that I don't know. So Abdul, maybe you could walk us through what are some of the concerns that customers have? How do you help mitigate those? Whether it's other application dependencies, you know freezing code, you know, getting, again from that point A to point B without risking my existing business processes how do you handle that? >> Yeah, certainly I think a customer needs to understand what the journey looks like to begin with. So we've actually developed our own methodology that we call Rocket Cloud, which is also part of our cloud modernization strategy that builds in and database modernization strategy built into it starts with an assessment in terms of current state discovery. Not all customers totally understand where they are today. So understanding where the database state is, you know where the risks lie what are the criticality of the various databases? What technologies are used, where we have RAC or we don't have RAC but we have data God, where we have encryption. And so on. That gives the customer a very good insight in terms of the current state, both commercially and technically that's a key point to understand how they're licensed today and what costs could be freed up to free the journey to effectively fund the journey. It's a big, big topic, but once we do that, we get an idea and we've actually developed a tool called rapid discovery. That's able to discover a largest stake without knowing the database list. We just put the scripts at the database servers themselves and it tells us exactly which databases are suited to be you know, effectively migrated to Postgres with in terms of the feature function usage in terms of how heavy they are, would store procedures in the database amount of business logic use of technologies like RAC data guard and how they convert over to to Postgres specifically. That ultimately gives us the ability to give that customer an assessment and that assessment in a short sharp few weeks and get the customer view of all of my hundreds of databases. Here are the subset of candidates for Postgres and specifically than we do the schemer advisor tool the actual assessment tool from EDB, which gives us a sense of how well the schema gets converted and how best to then also look at the stored procedure conversion as well. That gives the customer a full view of their architecture mapping their specific candidate databases and then a cost analysis in terms of what that migration looks like and how we migrate. We also run and maintain those platforms once we're on EDB. >> Thank you for that again, very clear but so you're not replacing, doing an organ transplant. You may, you're you're, you know, this is not I don't mean this as a pejorative, but you're kind of cherry picking those workloads that are appropriate for EDB and then moving those and then maybe, maybe through attrition or, you know over time, sun-setting those other, those other core pieces. >> Exactly. >> Charlie, let me ask you, so we talked about RAC, real application clusters, data guard. These are, you know kind of high profile Oracle capabilities. Can you, can you really replicate the kind of resiliency at lower costs with open source, with EDB Postgres and how do you do that? >> It's my turn? >> yes, please. >> Quite technically, again, I go on in depths and technically the RAC, RAC system is so-called is the best you know, best the tool to protect data and especially in the Unix system, but apart from the RAC by the some nice data replication solution we just stream the application and log shipping and something and then monitor Pam and, and EFM solution which is enterprise failover manager. So even though it be compared to Apple the Apple RAC versus with EDB solution, we can definitely say that RAC is more stable one, but after migration, whatever, we can overcome the, you know, drawbacks of the HA cluster system by providing the EDB tools. I mean, in our experience so far and we're seeing the momentum really really take off the last 18 months, a small project with limited business logic within the database itself can we migrate it in a couple of months but typically with all the testing and rigor around that you typically say three months timeline a medium-sized complexity projects, a six month timeline and a large complex project could be anything from nine months and beyond, but it really comes down to how heavy the database is with business logic and the database and how much effort it will take to re-engineer effectively migrate that PLC code, business logic into EDB given the compatibility level between Oracle and EDB it's relatively certainly an easier path than any other target platform in terms of options. Yeah. Not perspective. That's certainly looks like the composition of a team and timeline >> Charlie or Alan, anything you guys would add. >> Yeah. So, so I think all those personas make sense. I think you might, on the consumer side of the consumer the consumer of the data side the data scientists often we see, you know during migrations and then obviously the dev ops, I think or any operations, right, have to be heavily involved. And then lastly, you know, you see more and more data steward role or data steward type persona, CDO office type type person coming in there make sure that, you know, whatever data governance that is already in place or wants to be in place after the migration is also part of the conversation. >> Why EDB? You know, there's a lot of databases out there you know, it's funny, I always say like, you know, 10, 15 years ago databases were kind of sort of a boring market, right? It was like, okay, you're going to work or whatever. And now it's exploded. You got open source databases, you got, you know not only sequel databases, you got graph databases you know, you get cloud databases, it's going crazy. Why EDB? You wonder if you guys could address that? >> Allan why don't you go first this time? I'll compliment your answers. >> Yeah. I mean, again, I think it goes back to, to the, the I guess varying needs and, and enterprises. Right. And I think that's, what's driven this explosion in databases, whether it's a document store like you're saying, or, or new types of RDBMS, the needs that we talked about at the beginning, like lower TCO, and the push to open source. But you know, the fact of the matter is that that yes, there is a myriad, an ecosystem of databases, pretty much any organization. And so, yeah, we want to tap into that. And why EDB? EDB has done a great job of taking Postgres and making it enterprise ready, you know, that's what they're, they're good at and that, you know fits very nicely with the IBM story obviously. And, and so, you know, and they've they've worked with us as well. They have an operator on, on the runs on red hat OpenShift. So that makes it portable as well but also part of the IBM cloud Pak for data story. And, and yeah, you know, we want to break down those silos. We realized that that need is there for all of these, you know, there's this ecosystem of databases. And so, you know, we're, we see our role as being that platform, whether it's red hat OpenShift, or IBM cloud Pak for data that, that unifies, and kind of gives you that single pane of glass across all of those sources. >> And Charlie, you're obviously all in, you've got EDB in your background. Why EDB for you? >> Before talking about EDB you asked about the previous question about how the migration was different from Oracle to EDB. We had a couple of success story in Korea telecom and some banking area, and it was easier. So EDB provide MTK tool as a people know but it was an appropriate, like a 90%. So we are the channel partner of the EDB for four years. So what we have done was to hire the Oracle expert. So we train Oracle export as as EDB expert at the same time so that they can approach customer and make it easy. So you have no worry about that. Just migrating EDB, Oracle to EDB. There is a no issue. Those telltales include all the tasks, you know Stratus test and trainee, and a POC that we there. So by investing that Oracle expert that we could overcome and persuade the customer to adopt EDB. So, why EDB? Simply I can say there, is there any database they can finally replaced Oracle in the world? Why is the, it's the interoperability between Oracle to EDB as the many experts pointed out there is no other DBE. They can, you know, 90, 90% in compatibility and intercooperability with EDB. That's why, of course, there's the somewhat, you know budget issues or maintenance issue cost the issue escape from Oracle lock-in. But I think the the number one reason was the interoperability and the compatibility with database itself, Oracle database. That was a reason, I guess >> Great Abdul we've talked about, we all know the, as is, you've got a high maintenance costs. You got a lot of tuning, and it's just a lot of complexity. What about the 2B maybe you could share with us sort of the outcome some of the outcomes you've seen what the business impact has been of some of these migrations? >> Sure. I mean, I'll give you a very simple example then just the idea of running Oracle on prem a lot of customer systems teams, for example will drive a virtualization VMware strategy. We know some of the challenges of running Oracle MBM where from a license perspective. So giving the business the ability where I want to go customer in the financial services market in New York, heavy virtualization strategy the ability for them to move away from Oracle on, you know expensive hardware on to Postgres EDB on virtualization just leverage existing skillsets, leveraging existing investment in terms of infrastructure, and also give them portability in AWS. The other clouds, you know, in terms of a migration. More from a business perspective as well, I would say about some of the Allan's points in terms of just freeing up the ability for data scientists and data consumers, to, you know, to consume some of that data from an Postgres perspective more accessibility spinning up environments quicker less latency in terms of the agility is another key word in terms of the tangible differences, the business, lower cost agility, and the freedom to deploy anywhere at the end of the day. Choices, I think the key word that we could come back to and knowing that we can do that to Charlie's point specifically around maintaining service levels. And as architects, we support some of the big, big names out there in terms of airlines, online, cosmetic retailers, financial services, trading applications, hedge funds, and they all want one thing as architect: for us to deliver that resiliency and stand behind them. And as the MSP we're accountable to ensure those systems are up and running and performing. So knowing that the EDB is provided the compatibility but also plugged the specific requirements around performance management, security availability that's fundamentally been key. >> [Dave I mean, having done a lot of TCO studies in this area, it's, it's it Oracle's different. You know, normally the biggest component of TCO is labor with Oracle. The biggest component of TCO is licensed and maintenance costs. So if you can virtualize and reduce those costs and of course, of course the Oracle will fight you and say we won't support it in a VMware environment. Of course, you know, they will, but, but you got to really, you got to battle. But, so here's my last question. So if I'm a customer in that state that you described you know, a lot of sort of Oracle sprawl a lot of databases out there, high maintenance costs, the whole lock-in thing. I got to choices. I, you know, a lot of choices out there. One is EDB. You guys have convinced me that you've got the expertise If I can partner with firms like yours, it's safer route. Okay, cool. My other choice is Oracle is going to, The Oracle sales reps is going to get me in a headlock and talk about exit data and how their Oracle cloud, and how it's, they've invested a lot there. And they have, and, I can pay by the drink all this sort of modern sort of discussion, you know, Oracle act like they invented it late to the game. And then here we are. So, so help me. What's the pitch as to, well, that's kind of compelling. It's maybe the safe bet they're there. They're working with my CIO, whatever. Why should I go with the open source route versus that route? It sounds kind of attractive to me, help me understand that each of you maybe take me through that. Abdul, why don't you start. >> Yeah. I'd say, you know, Oracle's being the defacto for so many years that people have just assumed and defaulted saying, high availability, RAC, DR. Data guard, you know, and I'll apply to any database need that I have. And at the end of the day customers have a three tier database requirement: the lowest, less critical, bronze level databases that really don't need RAC or a high availability, silver tier that are departmental solutions. That means some level of resiliency. And then you've got your gold revenue producing brand impact databases that are they're down. And certainly they won. You see no reason why the bronze and silver databases can be targeted towards EDB. Admittedly, we have some of our largest customers are running platforms, are running $5 million an hour e-commerce platform or airlines running large e-commerce platforms. And exit data certainly has a place. RAC has a place in those, in those scenarios. Were not saying that the EDB is a solution for everything in all scenarios, but apply the technology where it's appropriate where it's required and, you know, generally wherever Oracle has being the defacto and it's being applied across the estate, that's fundamentally what's changed. It doesn't have to be the only answer you have multiple choices now. EDB provides us with the ability to probably address, you know more than 50% of the databases' state, and comfortably cope with that and just apply that more expensive kind of gold tier one cost-based but also capability, you know from the highest requirements of performance and availability where it's appropriate. >> Yeah. Very pragmatic approach. Abdul, thank you for that. And Charlie. Charlie, what's your perspective? Give us your closing thoughts. >> Well, it has been, Oracle has been dominating in Asia in South Korea has market or over many years. So customers got tired of this, continuous spending money for the maintenance costs and there is no discount. There is no negotiation. So they want to move away from expensive stuff. And they were looking for a flexible platform with the easygoing and the high speed and performance open source database like a possibly as career. And now the EDB cannot replace a hundred percent of existing legacy worker, but 10%, 20% 50% as time goes on the trend that will continue. And it will be reaching some high point or replacing the existing Oracle system. And it can, it can also leading to good business chance to a channel partner and EDB steps and other related business in open source. >> Great. Thank you, Charlie and Allen, bring us home here. Give us your follow up >> I think my, co- panelists hit the nail on the head, right? It's a menu, right? That's as things become more diverse and as people make more choices and as everybody wants more agility, you have to provide, I mean, and so that, that's where that's coming in and I liked the way that Andul I kind of split it into gold silver and bronze. Yeah. And I think that that's where, we're going, right? I mean you should ask your developers right? Are your developers like pining to start up a new instance of Oracle every time you're starting a new project? Probably not reach for their Postgres right? And so, because of that, that's where this is coming from and that's not going to change. And, and yeah, that that ecosystem is going to continue to, to thrive. And there'll be lots of different flavors in the growing open source ecosystem. >> Yeah. I mean, open source absolutely is the underpinning you know, the, the bedrock of innovation, these days. (upbeat pop music) >> From our studios in the heart of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, California, this is a CubeConversation. >> Hello, everyone welcome to this CUBE Conversation here in Palo Alto, California, I'm John Furrier, co-host of theCUBE. We are here forth Inhi Cho Suh General Manager of IBM Watson, Customer Engagement, Former Cube alumni, I think she's been on dozens of times. Great to see you again. Welcome to our Palo Alto Studios. >> Yeah, great being here, John. >> So, we haven't chatted in awhile. IBM thing just happened, a little bit of a rainy event, here in February. Interesting change over since we last talked, but first give an update on what you're up to these days, what group are you leading, what's new? >> Okay, well first of all, I'm here based in California, which I'm excited about, and I lead our Watson West office, which is our Watson headquarters, here on the west coast, in downtown San Francisco, and we hosted our Think Conference, and at Think I lead with, in IBM, what we call our Watson Customer Engagement Business Unit, which is really the business applications, of how we apply Watson and other disruptive tech to a line of business audiences, both SAS and on premise software, so really excited about the areas of applying AI and machine learning as well as Blockchain to things like supply chain, and logistics, to order management, to next generation of retail. A lot of new, exciting areas. >> Yeah, we've had many conversations over the years from big data to as your career spanned across IBM, and you have a much more horizontal view of things, now. You're horizontally scalable, as we say in the cloud world. What's your observation of the trends these days? Because there's a lot waves. Actually, the waves that you guys announced, was the IBM, Watson NE ware and the cloud private ware. Marvin and I had an amazing conversation that video went viral. This is now getting a big tailwind for IBM. What's your thoughts in general about the overall ecosystem, because you're here in Silicon Valley, you've seen the big waves, you've got another big data world, cloud is here, multi cloud. What's your thoughts on the big mega-trends? >> Yeah, that's a good question. I think the first chapter of cloud, everyone ran to public cloud. When you look at it through the lens of enterprise, though, the hot topic right now in the second chapter is really about not just public cloud, but multi-cloud, hybrid cloud. Meaning, whether it's a private, public, it's about thinking about the applications and the nature of the applications and regardless of where the data sits, what are the implications of actually getting work done? Through, kind of, new container services, new ways of microservices in the development, of how APIs are integrated, and so, the hot topic right now is definitely hybrid cloud, multi cloud. And the work we've done to certify, what we call, IBM cloud private really enables us to not just take any business application to any cloud in our cloud, as well, but actually to enable Watson and Watson based applications also across multi cloud environments. >> So, chapter two, Jenny mentioned that in her key notes, I want to dig into that because we've been talking a lot about multi cloud architecture, and one of the big debates has been, in the industry, oh, don't pick a soul cloud. I've been writing a bunch of content about that at this DOD jedi deal with Amazon and Oracle, fighting for it out there, but that's also happening at the enterprise, but the reality is, everyone has multiple clouds. If you've got a sales force or if you've got this and that and the other thing, you probably have multiple clouds, so it's not so much soul cloud vs. as it is, workloads having a cloud for the right job and that seems to be validated at IBM Think, in talking to the top technical people and in the industry. They all say, pick the right cloud for the job. And we've heard that before in Big Data. Pick the right tool for the job. So, given that, workloads seem to be driving the demand for cloud. Since you're on the app side, how are you seeing that? Because the world's flipped. It used to be infrastructure and software enable the app's capabilities. Now the workloads have infrastructure as code, made with cloud, they're driving the requirements. This is a change over. >> It is a big change and part of, I would say, when people first ran to the cloud, and a lot of the public cloud services were digital SaaS services, where people were wanting to stitch multiple applications across clouds, and that became a challenge, so in this next iteration, that I'm seeing is, really, a couple things. One is, data gravity. So, where does the data actually reside, for the workload that's actually happening? Whether it's the transactions, whether it's customer information, whether it's product information, that's one piece. The second piece is a lot more analytics, right? And the spectrum of analytics running from traditional warehouse capabilities, to more, let's say, larger scale big data projects to full blown advanced algorithms and AI applications, is, people are saying, look, not only do I want to stitch these applications across multiple clouds; I also want to make sure I can actually tap into the data to apply new types of analytics and derive new services and new values out of relationships, understanding of how products are consumed, and so forth. So, for us, when we think about it is, we want to be able to enable that fluid understanding of data across the clouds, as well as protect and be thoughtful about the data privacy rights around it, compliance around GDPR, as well as how we think about the security aspects as well, for the enterprise. >> That is a great point. I think I want to drill down on the data piece, your background on data obviously is going to be key in your job now obviously, it's pretty obvious with Watson, but David Floyd, a wiki bonds research analyst, just posted a taxonomy of hybrid cloud research report that laid out the different kinds of cloud you could have. There's edge clouds, there's all kinds of things from public to edge, so when you look at that, you're thinking, okay, the data plain is the critical nature of the cloud. Now, depending on which cloud architecture for the use case, the workload, whatever, the data plain seems to be this magical opportunity. AI is going to have a big part of that. Can you just talk about how you guys see that evolving? Because, obviously, AI is a killer part of your strategy. This data piece is inter-operating across the clouds. >> Yes. >> Data management governs you're smiling, cause there's a killer answer coming. >> Totally. This is such a great set up. Actually, Ginni even said it in her keynote at Think, which was, you can't have an AI strategy without an information architecture strategy, which is an IA strategy, and information architecture is all about what you said: it's data preparation; understanding the foundation of it, making sure you've got the right governance structure, the integration of it, and then actually how you apply the more advanced analytics on top. So, information architecture and thinking about the data aspects in all kinds of data. Majority of the data actually sits behind, what I would say, the traditional public firewall. So, it sits behind the firewalls of our enterprise clients, like 80 plus percent of it, and then, many of the clients, we actually recently did a study, with about 5,000 senior executives, across many, many thousands of organizations, and 85% of them want to apply AI to improve their customer service, to improve the way they engage their clients and their products and services, so this is a huge opportunity right now for pretty much every organization to think through; kind of their data strategy. Their information architecture strategy, as part of their overall AI strategy. >> So, a question a got on twitter comes up a lot, and, also on my notes here, I wanted to ask you is, how can companies increase transparency trust and mitigate bias in AI? Because this comes up a lot and that's the questions that come in from the community is, Hey, I got my site, my apps running in Germany. I've got users over there, I'm global. I have to manage compliance, I got all this governess now, I'm over my shoulders, kind of a pain in the butt, but also I don't want to have the software be skewed on bias and other things, and then, I also get this whole Facebook dynamic going on, where it's like, I don't trust people holding my data. This is a big, huge issue. >> It is enormous. >> You guys are in the middle of it, what's your thoughts, what's the update, what's the dynamic and what's the solution? >> So, this is a big topic. I think we could do a whole episode just on this topic alone. So, trust and developing trust and transparency in AI should be a fundamental requirement across many, many different types of institutions. So, first of all, the responsibility doesn't sit only with the technology vendors; it's a shared responsibility across government institutions, the consumers, as well as the business leaders, in terms of how they're thinking about it. The more important piece, though, is when you think about the population that's available, that really understands AI, and they're actually coding and developing on it, is that we have to think about the diverse population that's participating in the governance of it, because you don't want just one tribe or one group that's coding and developing the algorithms, or deciding the decision models. >> Like the nerds or the geeks; they're a social aspect, society aspect as well, right? Social science. >> Exactly. I actually just did a recent conversational series with Northwestern Kellogg's business school, around the importance of developing trust and transparency, not only in the algorithms themselves, but the methodology of how you think about culture and value and ethics come into play through different lens, depending on the country you live in, as you kind of referenced, depending on your different values and religious backgrounds. It may because of different institutional and/or policy positions, depending on the nature, and so there has to be a general awareness of this that's thoughtful. Now, why I'm so excited about the work we're doing at IBM is we've actually launched a couple new initiatives. One is, what we call, AI OpenScale, which is really a platform and an opportunity to have the ability to begin to apply AI, see how AI operations and models function in production. We have methodologies in terms of engaging understanding fairness, so there's a 360 degree fairness kit, which is actually available in the open source world, there's a set of tools to understand and train people on recognizing bias, so even just definitions of, what do you mean by bias? It could be things like, group think, it could be, you're just self selecting on certain data sets to reinforce your hypotheses, it could be unconscious levels and it's not just traditionally socially oriented, types of bias. >> It could be data bias, too. It could be data bias, right? >> Totally. Machine generated biases in IOT world, also. >> So, contextual and behavioral biases kind of kick into play here. >> Yeah, but it starts with transparency trust. It also starts with thoughtful governance, it starts with understanding in your position on policy around data privacy, and those things are things that should be educational conversations across the entire industry. >> How far along are we on the progress bar there? I mean, it seems like it's early and we seem to be talking for awhile, but it seems even more early than most people think. Still a lot more work. Your thoughts on where the progress bar is on this whole mash up of tech and social issues around bias and data? Where are we? >> We're really at the early stages, and part of the reason we're at the early stages is I think people have, so far, really applied AI in very simple task oriented applications. The more, what we call, broad AI, meaning multi task work flow applications are starting, and we're also starting seeing in the enterprise. Now, in the enterprise world, you can still have bias, so, for example, when you talked about data bias, one of the simple examples I use is, think about loan approvals. If one of the criteria may be based on gender, you may have a sensitivity around the lack of women owned business leaders, and that could be a scoring algorithm that says, hey, maybe it's a higher risk when in fact, it's not necessarily a higher risk, it's just that the sampling is off, right. So, that would be a detection to say, hey maybe you have sensitivity around that data set, because you actually have an insufficient amount of data. So, part of data detection and understanding biases; where you have sampling of data that's incorrect, where your segmentation could be rethought, where it may just require an additional supervision or like decision making criteria as part of your governance process. >> This is actually a great area for young people to get involved, whether at their universities or curriculum, this kind of seems to be, whether it's political science and/or data science kind of coming together, you kind of have a mash. What's your advice to people watching that might be either in high school, college, or rethinking their career, because this seems to be hot area. >> It is a hot area. I would recommend it for every student at every age, quite frankly and we're at such an early stage that it's not too late to join and you're not too young nor are you too old to actually get in the industry, so that's point one. This is a great time for everyone to get involved. The second piece is, I would just start with online courses that are available, as well as participate in communities and companies like IBM, where we actually make available on a number of our web based applications, that you can actually do some online training and courses to understand the services that we have, to begin to understand the taxonomy and the language, so a very simple set, would be like, learn the language of AI first, and then, as you're learning coding, if you're more technically inclined, there's just a myriad of classes available. >> Final question, before I move on to the topic around inclusion and diversity, machine learning is impacting all verticals. I was just in an interview, talking with Don En-ju-bin-ski, she's got a company where it's neuroscience and machine learning coming together. Machine learning's being impacted all over. We mentioned basic data bias, and machine learning can help there. Machine learning meets blank every vertical, every market, is being impacted machine learning, which will trigger some of the things you're seeing on the app side. Your thoughts, looking at where you've come from in your career at IBM to now, just the evolution of what machine learning has enabled, your thoughts on the impact of machine learning. >> Oh, it's exciting and I'll give you a real simple example, so one of the great things my own team actually did was apply machine learning to, everyone loves the holiday shopping period, right? Between Thanksgiving to New Years, so we actually develop, what we call, Watson Order Optimizer and one of my favorite brands is REI, so the recreational equipment incorporated company, they actually applied our Watson Order Optimizer to optimize in real time. The best place, let's say you want to order a kayak or a T-shirt or a hiking boot, but the best way to create the algorithms to ship from different stores, and shipping from stores, for most retailers, is a high cost variable, because you don't know what the inventory positions are, you don't necessarily know the movement of traffic into that store, you may not even know what the price promotions are, so what was exciting about putting machine learning algorithms to this was, we could actually curate things like shipping and tax information, inventory positions of products in stores, pricing, a movement of goods as part of that calculation. So, this is like a set of business rules that are automatically developed, using Watson, in a way that would be almost impossible for any human to actually come up with all of the possible business roles, right? Because this is such a complex situation, and then you're trying to do it at the peak time, which is, like Black Friday, Cyber Monday Weekend, so we were able to actually apply Watson Machine Learning to create the business roles for when it should be shipped from a warehouse or a particular store. In order to meet the customer requirement, which is the fulfillment of that brand experienced, or the product experienced, so my view is, there are so many different places across the industry, that we could actually apply machine learning to, and my team is really excited about what we've been doing, especially in the next generation of supply chain. >> And it's also causing students to be really attracted to computer science, both men and women. My daughter, who is a senior at Berkeley, is interested in it, so you're starting to see the impact of machine learning is hitting all main stream, which is a good segue to my next question, we've been very passionate, I know it's one of your passions is inclusion and diversity or diversity and inclusion, there's always debates: D before I or I before D? Some say inclusion and diversity or diversity and inclusion. It's all the same thing, there's just a lot of effort going on to bring the tech industry up to par with the reality of the world, and so you have a study out. I've got a copy here. Talk about this study: Women in Leadership and the Priority Paradox. Talk about the study; what was behind it and what were some of the findings? >> Sure, and I'm excited that your daughter, that's a senior in college, is going to be another woman that's entering the workforce, and especially being in tech, so the priority paradox is that we actually looked at over 2,300 organizations, these are some of the top institutions around the world, that are curating and attracting the best talent and skills. Now, when you look at that population, we were surprised to find out that you would think by 2019-2018 that only 18% of those organizations actually had women in senior leadership positions, and what I categorize as senior leading positions, are in the see-swee, as vice presidents, maybe senior executives or senior managers; director level folks. So, that's one piece, which is, wow, given the size and the state where we are in the industry, only 18%: we could do better. Now, why do we believe that? The second piece is, you want the full population of the human capacity to think and creatively solve. Some of the world's biggest complex problems; you don't want a small population of the world trying to do this, so, the second piece of the paradox, which was the most surprising, is that 79% of these companies actually said that formalizing or prioritizing gender, fostering that kind of inclusive culture, was not a business priority, and that they had a harder time actually mapping that gap. Now, in the study, what we actually discovered though, was those companies, that did make it a priority, actually had first mover advantage, and making it a priority is quite simple. It's about understanding how to create that inclusive culture, to allow different perspectives and different experiences to be allowed in the co-creation and development. >> So, first mover advantage, in terms of what? >> Performance, actual business performance, so even though 80% of the organizations that we interviewed actually said that they've not made it a business priority, the 20% that did, we actually saw higher performance in their outcomes, in terms of business performance. >> So, this is actually a business benefit, too. I think your point is, the first mover advantage is saying, those companies that actually brought in the leadership to create that different perspective, had higher performance. >> Absolutely. >> We've talked about this before; one of the things I always say is that, tech is now mainstream, and it's 18% of the target audience of tech isn't the market, it's 50/50 or 51. Some say 51% women/men, so who's building the products for half the audience? So, again, this doesn't make any sense, so this is a good statistic. >> It is, and if you think about the students that are actually graduating out of graduate school, recently, there's actually more women graduating out of grad school than men. When you think about that population that's now entering the workforce, and what's actually happening through the pipeline, I think there's got to be thoughtful focus and programmatic improvements across the industry, around how to develop talent and make sure that different companies and organizations can move. Like you said, problem solve for creating new products that actually serve the world, not just serve certain populations, but also do it in a way that's thoughtful about, kind of, the makeup. >> And the mainstream and prep of tech obviously makes it more attractive, I mean, you're seeing a lot more women thinking about machines, like my daughter, the question is, how do they come in and not lose their footing, mentor-ship? So, what are the priorities that you see the industry needs to do? What are some of the imperatives to keep the pipeline and keep all the mentoring, obviously mentoring is hot, we see the networking built. >> Yeah, mentoring is huge. >> What's your thoughts on the best practices that you've been involved in? >> Some of the best practices we've actually done a number with an IBM, we've done a program called, Tech Re-Entry, so women that have decided to come back into the tech workforce, we actually have a 12 week internship program to do that. Another is a big initiative that we have around P-TECH, which is the next generation of workers aren't just going to have a formal college and or PHD masters type degrees. The next generation, which we're calling, is not necessarily a white collar, blue collar, what we're calling it is, new collar, meaning these are students that are able to combine their equivalent of a high school degree and early college education in one to be kind of, if you think about it, next generation of technical vocational schools, right? That quickly enter the workforce, are able to do jobs in terms of web development, in terms of cloud management, cloud services, it could be next generation of-- >> It's a huge skill gap opportunity, this is a big opportunity for people. >> It is, and we're seeing great adoption. We've seen it on a number of states across the US, this is an effort that we partner with, the states and the governors of each state, because public education has got to be done in a systematic way that you can actually sustain it for many, many years and this is something that we were excited about championing in the state of New York first. >> The ReEntry program and other things, I always tell myself, the technology is so new now you could level up a lot faster than, there's not that linear school kind of mentality, you don't need eight years to learn something. You could literally learn something pretty quickly these days because the gap between you and someone else is so short now, because it's all new skills. >> It's true, it's true. We talk about digital disruption through the lens of businesses, but there's a huge digital disruption through the lens of what you're talking about, which is our individual development and talent, and the ability to learn through so many different channels that's available now, and the focus around micro degrees, micro skills, micro certifications, there's so many ways for everyone to get involved, but I really do encourage everyone across every industry to have some knowledge and basis and understanding of tech, because tech will redefine how services and products are delivered across every category. >> And that's not male or female: that's just everyone. Again, back to technology for good, we can solve technology problems, You guys have been doing it at IBM, solve technology problems, but now the people problem is about getting people empowered, all gender, races, et cetera, the people getting the skills, getting employed, working for clouds, this is an opportunity. >> This is a huge opportunity. I think this is an exciting time. We feel like we're entering this next phase of, what I call, chapter two of cloud, this is chapter two of digital reinvention, of the enterprise, digital reinvention of the individual, actually, and it's an opportunity for every country, every population group to get involved, in so many new and creative ways, and we're at the early foundation stages in terms of both AI development, as well as new capabilities like Blockchain. Brought to you by IBM. >> Hello everyone welcome to the Cube, I'm John Furrier, we are here in Las Vegas for the Cube coverage of IBM Think 2018. So Cube Studios, live coverage, all day long three days, this is our third day, our next guest, is Cube alumni, Inhi Cho Suh, she's also the general manager of Watson Customer Engagement, been on so many times I don't know, eight, ten, a lot, you're a VIP. Great to see you. >> Thank you, good seeing you John, I really enjoy hanging out with you guys. >> So we love to hear what you're up to, cause you always have your finger on the pulse, here at IBM, take a minute to explain the group that you're in, Watson Customer Engagement, that's kind of a nice bumper-- but there's a lot to it, you're doing now. >> There is. >> It's large it's got billions of dollars in revenue, give us the numbers, run the numbers for us, size, people, products, all in 30 seconds, no go. >> It's an exciting space. So Watson Customer Engagement is really a Watson business applications, that are relevant for marketers, merchandisers, digital commerce leaders, as well as supply chain professionals. So my team really develops the software, both for on premises and SasS for everything from digital marketing experiences, personalized marketing, campaign management, to managing next generation of interactive sites and shopping sites, to understanding customer journeys, and journey analytics, so supply chains, and big big collaborations. So it is a pretty broad breadth of about 21 solutions in offerings, that span many industries and many countries. >> We you got your hands in a lot of great stuff across the board but I think the big news today was the blockchain announcements, you guys featured a solution on stage, this is hard news, so explain, so talk about the hard news, you have an announcement, it's on stage, it's blockchain related, >> Yup absolutely so my team has been working on creating more analytics in our supply chain solution. So one of our solutions is called Supply Chain Insights which really is about adding visibility to disruptions. And being able to apply analytics to let's say management response, incident management. Then we were thinking about our supply chain business network, so that is a separate offering that we have, which is about 6 thousand clients are on it. With 400 thousand trading partners, we do 8 million transaction documents a day, in terms of this trading network. What we did was we announced a shared visibility ledger, for any of our clients and partners, in the supply chain business network. So we're adding blockchain to that as a way to ensure that transparency, as well as speed of operations, so we're really excited about it >> And security. >> And security huge. >> Huge. So supply chain, blockchain, value activities, all this stuff, this is where blockchain shines, because this is a core competency of IBM, for generations. >> Oh absolutely. >> I mean providing applications for value chains, so this is interesting, so just to get the clarification the product is on preview? >> Yeah it's a technology showcase that we're doing right now that we've prototyped, and we're going to make it available as an offering that's called shared ledger, for any client that's actually on our supply chain business network today. >> And what's in it for them? How do they implement it, and the vision of the product, they already have a product, they bolt in on, is this a new offering? >> Yeah so if they already have it, they'll get access to let's say a visibility layer, so the shared ledger will allow you to see where in the process your transaction document is. So let's say you're in the area of consumer and merchandising and moving goods. From in transit. So knowing when a box actually left a particular warehouse, is it in transit or not and did it actually deliver on time. There's a lot of parties involved in all of that. >> And paperwork, and manual processing, data entry >> You got it. Now you have the actual stamped records, of who's touched it, when, and whether or not with IOT instrumentation too. Of when things have moved or not. >> So this brings up the conversation we've been having on the Cube about the inefficiencies now going to be abstracted away with things like blockchain and AI. Used cases that you've seen that jump out at you, that you'd like to share, that can highlight that, obviously AI, I said analytics, that's your wheelhouse. Now blockchain's emerging, I mean this is the innovation sandwich. AI on one hand is bread, and then you got blockchain, and data's the meat. >> Well you know especially in areas like supply chain, where small bits of optimization, meaning a one percent improvement, or resolving invoice and settlements, have such huge ripple effects downstream. So there was a great example in terms of our Maersk work, and global trade and blockchain. Is food shipments in particular, and food safety. And being able to resolve the source of where the original food, whether it was grown, or harvested, and being able to do that in seconds, not weeks, right, going through that paperwork. So there's huge opportunities there. We're excited because we're now adding in not just AI capabilities, but we're also adding in collaboration capabilities into that, which then allow groups of people to interact together, in time, just in moment, to address alternative decisions and routes. >> Inhi I want to get your personal perspective on something, we've had so many conversations in the past around points in time, show messaging, and products you're announcing, it seems like this show at IBM, with everything coming together under one big tent, you see visibility now on unit economics of value, you're starting to see the path towards solutions, for customers, it's not as foggy as it once was. How do you explain that, you've see this evolve, and Jamie Thomas and I were talking earlier about, you know we base an investments and bets is now paying off what's really happening here, what's the big ah ha moment, where all this is kind of crystallizing right now. >> Well a couple things have happened. You know IBM's gone through, we've gone through our own transformation. If you think about even four or five years ago, the mix of our portfolio, to what it is now, less than I would say three billion of our revenue basis was in the mix that we have now. And if you think about our fourth quarter earnings even as we enter first quarter, we had I think over 46 percent, 46 to 48 percent of our portfolio tied to what we call our strategic imperatives. And that's a huge transformation, so part of that is a couple things, one is, we said look, this world of AI leverages and consumes a tremendous amount of data, and we want to make sure that you're protecting your data set. So we want to be thoughtful about how you engage strategically so let's have your strategy, let's make sure you understand your data, we want to protect you in that. We want to actually enable you to curate, train, harvest, the insights from that. We want to make sure we leverage your expertise. So your people, your talent, so augmenting them with capabilities that are work flow oriented, task management, self discovery, and then most importantly, delivering platforms multiple platforms quite frankly, over time that learn. Right, learn to interact, and evolve and can integrate these data sets, in order to give our clients speed. So that's what's been great about here, is we're actually getting to share our own transformation story, but also our portfolio has evolved across strategy, data, and platform. >> It's been sure and a clear line of sight on some value. What's the big bets that you could look back on the past five years and say wow, we made some big bets, these one's paid off. What were those big bets in your mind. You've been involved in a lot of deals I know, analytics side, what were the big bets that IBM made that's paying off right now? >> You know I feel like I've known you almost eight, nine years now right, since you guys started on some of this. I would say for example, our better round big data. That is a huge bet, in terms of our analytics capability, and that is a full spectrum, that is something that we've been investing in for quite a long time. And then when you think about the bet on Watson and AI, and transforming, not just businesses and business process but actually transforming professions. We have Watson today operating across multiple industries, like 20 different industries in 45 countries. Multiple languages, multiple implementations, and it's getting better and better, whether it's healthcare, it's tax accounting, it's law and cyber security, we're seeing huge opportunities >> Data paid off big time. >> Huge payoff. Cloud. Cloud is huge for every client, because they're in different states of their journey. There may be certain application workloads, that they want to manage themselves, there maybe be applications that they want, and services that they want to subscribe to in the cloud. Public, private, hybrid, we're having that dialogue. So I think everyone is on that journey now. So that's another huge bet. And then verticalizing the application sets. And so one of the things that I've got the opportunity to be a part of right now, is really the business applications, and how are we infusing Watson into our business applications. >> And leveraging the horizontal scale of Cloud, and everything else, and blockchain. So what's the priorities for you going into the new business, you got a big organization, thousands of employees, or people work for you, a lot going on, what's the priorities, what is the focus? >> I've got about five thousand people on the team, so small team (laughs) Globally dispersed, we're working on a number of things actually, and what's so exciting about that is we're thinking about personalizing AI at mass scale. So when you think about, through the lens of a marketer, real time personalization is becoming more, and more challenged, because of not only the data sets, but the types of tools and the varied tool applications, you're switching context all the time. So we're providing ways to integrate and mix data sets, so our user behavior exchange data set really gives insights around consumer sentiment, behavior, and context. The work the team has been doing around metropolts, hyper local store and a city location data, mixing that with events and other activities, and customer transaction data. So a lot on that front. The second category we're really focused on, is next generation of embedding, what I would consider cognitive services, like search, headless search, so really understanding intent that's pervasive, on other platforms. We're adding things also, like embedded agents, so everyone's right now talking about you know they want to create chat bots, and bots, But they may be embedded in systems, and they also may be embedded in different types of use cases, call center, so forth, so we're excited about that. And then obviously the supply chain area with blockchain, so we've got a lot. >> And the payoff in data's interesting because now you've got contextual relevance for things that are embedded, like chat bots, or whatever at the right time. And also if you think about the gamification opportunities, data now in these network affect markets, whether it's blockchain evolving into cryptocurrency, and decentralized web applications. The commerce piece is going to be impacted. Your vertical integrations are going to be gamified. This is coming right down main street for IBM isn't it? >> Well and if you think about blockchain one of the biggest challenges is onboarding into a network. So what we're trying to do is one of the use cases is actually adding blockchain to existing networks, and so that once you're onboarded into a network, you can connect to other networks. So a network of networks sort of effect. >> And their effects is all data driven. >> It's all data driven. So membership and governance around blockchain is important, and then the other piece we're thinking through is use cases by vertical, so retail, so when you go through that lens, and retail in terms of fashion, it's a very different lens than when you think through the business lens of retail banking, right. And our team is thoughtful about what does that mean in the next generation of content services. So how do you automatically tag images, and surface them up, for it be published in the right media form, independent of the channel, or the navigation tools or assets. There's a lot here I'm excited. >> So final question for you, it's kind of a philosophical one, you can answer it or not. You know you always get the zingers from me, but the tools are changing too, so in these new emerging markets, where there's just not-- take finance for instance and say cryptocurrency, and software, the tooling's not there, you can't just stand up at a trading exchange, that's in these new token environments, or what these apps have. So there's new tooling coming out, that's a concern, how are you guys helping customers get the tooling? Is that on your radar? Is that something you guys are talking about? >> Well you know it's interesting that you bring it up, which is technology adoption. I'm just going to call it in a broader sense, because part of tooling is really about in user education and enablement. We are actually adding a capability called Ask Watson, embedded in our software and services, especially our SasS properties, such that hey, I want to build a new email campaign, well what are my choices, and instead of reading through a traditional manual, or having to go and find someone, or watching a bunch of YouTube videos, what if Watson actually surfaced, here are ways here are some existing templates, where would you like to start. And all of a sudden this kind of co-creation happens. So we're actually thinking of applying Watson, embedded in our software, and SasS services to enable, not just tooling, actually automatic assistance in the task, in the moment. >> Yeah no need to code. Insights is a service. >> Huge, customer insights is actually one of our top applications. So we're doing capabilities around journey analytics, and customer experience analytics, so think about when you're any business person, who's got a set of clients, you know what they want to do as they express their brand, it may be done through email communications, it may be push notifications, there may be a SEO notification, and in that scenario, at what point, does the consumer, or the be to be struggle, in actually fulfilling a transaction. Was it as they're zooming in and doing product comparisons was it as they were looking at post purchase serviceability. We are able to actually understand and look at their journey as they travel through all these touch points. So we're actually doing customer experience analytics, too. So for me, just coming from that data analytics background, into this application space of so many domain practitioners, >> And these applications got to be real time, they got to have the data analytics. okay we're back live here inside the cube rounding out day one of exclusive coverage of IBM information on demand I'm John further the founder SiliconANGLE enjoy my co-host Davey lonte we're here in heat you saw who's the vice president I said that speaks that you know I think you always get promoted you've been on the cube so many times you doing so well it's all your reason tatian was so amazing I always liked SVP the cute good things happen that's exactly why i be MVP is a big deal unlike some of the starters where everyone gets EVP all these other titles but welcome back thank you so the storytelling has been phenomenal here although murs a little bit critical some of the presentations earlier from gardner but the stories higher your IBM just from last year take us through what's changed from iod last year to this year the story has gotten tighter yes comprehensive give us the quick okay quick view um okay here's the point of view here's the point of view first you got to invest in a platform which we've all talked about and i will tell you it's not just us saying it i would say other vendors are now copying what we're saying cuz if you went to strata yes which you were there we were there probably heard some of the messages that's right why everybody wants to be a platform okay one two elevated risk uncertainty governance I think privacy privacy security risk this is what people are talking about they want to invest in a more why because you know what the decisions matter they want to make bigger beds they want to do more things around customer experience they want to improve products they want to improve pricing the third area is really a cultural statement like applying analytics in the organization because the people and the skills I would say the culture conversation is happening a lot more this year than it was a year ago not just at IOD but in the industry so I think what you're seeing here at IOD is actually a reflection of what the conversations are happening so our organizations culturally ready for this I mean you guys are going to say yes and everybody comes on says oh yes we're seeing it all over the place but are they really ready it depends I think some are some are absolutely ready some are not and probably the best examples are and it really depends on the industry so I'll give you a few examples so in the government area I think people see the power of applying things like real-time contextual insight leveraging stream computing why because national security matters a lot of fraudulent activity because that's measurable you can drive revenue or savings healthcare people know that a lot of decision-making is being made without a comprehensive view of the analytics and the data now the other area that's interesting is most people like to talk about text analytics unstructured data a lot of social media data but the bulk of the data that's actually being used currently in terms of big data analytics is really transactional data why because that's what's maintained in most operational systems where health systems so you're going to see a lot more data warehouse augmentation use cases leverage you can do on the front end or the back end you're going to see kind of more in terms of comprehensive view of the customer right augmenting like an existing customer loyalty or segmentation data with additional let's say activity data that they're interacting with and that was the usta kind of demo showing social data cell phone metadata is that considered transactional you know it is well call me to record right CDR call detail records well the real time is important to you mentioned the US open just for folks out there was a demo on stage when you guys open data yeah at all the trend sentiment data the social data but that's people's thoughts right so you can see what people are doing now that's big yeah you know what's amazing about that just one second which is what we were doing was we were predicting it based on the past but then we were modifying it based on real time activity and conversation so let's say something hot happened and all of a sudden it was interesting when Brian told me this he was like oh yeah Serena's average Twitter score was like 2,200 twit tweets a day and then if some activity were to happen let's say I don't know she didn't he wrote she had got into a romance or let's say she decided to launch a new product then all of a sudden you'd see an accused spike rate in activity social activity that would then predict how they wanted to operate that environment that's amazing and you know we you know we love daily seen our our crowd spots be finder we have the new crowd chat one and this idea of connecting consumers is loose data it's ephemeral data it's transient data but it's now capture will so people can have a have fun into tennis tournament and then it's over they go back home to work you still have that metadata we do that's very kind of its transient and ephemeral that's value so you know Merv was saying also that your groups doing a lot of value creation let's talk about that for a second business outcomes what do you what's the top conversation when you walk into a customer that says hey you know here's point a point B B's my outcome mm-hmm one of those conversations like I mean what are they what are some of the outcomes you just talked to use case you tell customers but like what did some of the exact you know what I'll tell you one use case so and this was actually in the healthcare hotel you won healthcare use case in one financial services use case both conversations happened actually in the last two weeks so in the healthcare use case there's already let's say a model that's happening for this particular hospital now they have a workflow process typically in a workflow process you you're applying capabilities where you've modeled out your steps right you do a before be before see and you automate this leveraging BPM type capabilities in a data context you don't actually start necessarily with knowing what the workflow is you kind of let the data determine what the workflow should be so in the this was in an ICU arena historically if you wanted to decide who was the healthiest of the patients in the ICU because you had another trauma coming in there was a workflow that said you had to go check the nurses the patient's profile and say who gets kicked out of what bed or moved because they're most likely to be in a healthy state that's a predefined workflow but if you're applying streams for example all the sudden you could have real-time visibility without necessarily a nurse calling a doctor who that calls the local staff who then calls the cleaning crew rate you could actually have a dashboard that says with eighty percent confidence beds2 and ate those patients because of the following conditions could be the ones that you are proactive in and saying oh you know what not only can they be released but we have this degree of confidence around them being because of the days that it's coming obvious information that changes then potentially you know the way your kind of setting your rules and policies around your workflow another example which was really a government use case was think about in government security so in security scenarios and national security state there is you never quite know exactly what people are intended to do other than you know they're intending something bad right and they're intentionally trying not to be found so human trafficking it's an ugly topic but I want to bring it up for a second here what you're doing is you're actually looking at data compositions and and different patterns and resolving entities and based on that that will dictate kind of potentially a whole new flow or a treatment or remediation or activity or savior which is not the predefined workflow it's you're letting the data actually all of a sudden connect to other data points that then you're arriving at the insight to take the action where is completely different I wanna go back to sleep RFI course not healthcare examples yeah so where are we today is that something that's actually being implemented is that something they sort of a proof of concept well that's actually being done at it's being done in a couple different hospitals one of which is actually in hospital in Canada and then we're also leveraging streams in the emory university intensive Timothy Buckman on you did earlier oh yeah the ICU of the future right absolutely brilliant trafficking example brings up you know Ashley that's the underbelly of the world in society but like data condition to Jeff Jonas been on the queue as you know many times and he talks with his puzzle pieces in a way that the data is traveling on a network a network that's distributed essentially that's network computing I mean estate management so look at network management you can look at patterns right so so that's an interesting example so that begs the next question what is the craziest most interesting use case you seen oh my gosh okay now i got i think about oh yes and you can talk about and i can talk about that creates business value or society value oh you know I okay um for you are putting me on the spot the craziest one so 3 we could be great could be g-rated don't you know they go to 2k yeah you know what I participated three weeks ago tiaa-cref actually hosted a fraud summit where it was all investigators like they were doing crime investigation so more than sixty percent of the guys in the room carried weapons because they were Security Intelligence they were pleased they were DA's they repented I was not packing anyway and there was about so 60-plus percent were those right and then only about thirty percent in the room were what i would consider the data scientists in the room like these are the guys are trying to decide which claims are not true or false so forth there were at least like three or four use cases in that discussion that came out they were unbelievable so one is in the fraud area in particular and in crime they're luring the data there what does luring the data they're taking location-based data for geographic region they're putting crime data on top of that right historical like drug rings and even like datasets in miami-dade county the DA told me they were doing things where rather than looking at people that are doing the drugs they they realize people that had possession of a drug typically purchased within a certain location and they had these abandoned properties and were able to identify entire rings based on that another one this is also semi drug-related is in the energy utility space there was in the middle part of the United States houses in Nice urban areas where they were completely torn apart on the interior and build into marijuana houses and so of course they're utilizing high levels of gas and electricity in order to maintain the water fertilization everything else well what happens is it drives peaks in the way that the energy utility looks on a given day pattern so based on that they're able to detect how inappropriate activities are happening and whether it's a single opportunistic type activity whether it's saying this was doing laundry or irrigating the Erie hey we well you know what's interesting about electricity to is especially someone's using electricity but no one's like using any of the gas you're like home but no one's cooking you know something's a little long but it was fascinating i mean really fascinating there were like several other crime scenarios in terms of speed i actually did not know the US Postal Service is like the longest running federal institution that actually tracked like mail fraud and one of the use cases i'm sure jeff has talked about here on the cube is probably a moneygram use case but we talked about that we talked I mean it the stories were unreal because I was spending time with forensic scientists as well as forensic investigators and that's a completely do we're getting we're getting the few minutes need for a platform to handle all this diversity so that's the security risk the governance everything you gotta go cuz your star for the analyst me I can't watch this conversation one final question one of the best yet as we get drugs in there we got other things packing guns guns and drugs you in traffic you know tobacco if you go / news / tobacco well write the knowledge worker all right final question for I know you gotta go this big data applications were you know the guys in the mailroom the guys work for the post office are now unable to actually do this kind of high-level kind of date basically data science yeah if you will or being an analyst so that what I want you to share the folks your vision of the definition of the knowledge worker overused word that's been kicked around for the PC generates but now with handheld with analytical real-time with streaming all this stuff happening at the edge how is it going to change that the knowledge work or the person in the trenches it could be person the cubicle the person on the go the mobile sales person or anyone you know I some people feel threatened when they hear that you're going to apply data and analytics everywhere because you're it implies that you're automating things but that's actually not the value the real value is the insight so that you can double down on the decisions you want to make so if you're more confident you're going to take bigger bets right and decision-making historically has been I think reserved for a very elite few and what we're talking about now is a democratization of that insight and with that comes a lot of empowerment a lot empowerment for everyone and you don't have to be a data scientist be able to be able to make decisions and inform decisions if anything you know actually Tim Buckman I had a good conversation about them as a professional you know what I if I was a physician I'd want to work at the hospital that has the advanced capabilities why because it allows me as a professional physician to then be able to do what I was trained to do not to detect and have to pay attention to all these alarms going off you know I want to work at the institutions and organizations that are investing appropriately because it pushes the caliber of the work I get to do so I think it just changes the dynamics for everyone tim was like a high-priced logistics manager you want to work with people want to work with leaders and now we're in a modern era this new wave is upon us who care and they want to improve and this is about continuing to improve Dave and I always talk about the open source world that those principles are going mainstream to every aspect of business collaboration openness transparency not controlled And welcome to the cubes live coverage of Microsoft Ignite Here in Orlando, I'm your host, Rebecca Night, along with my co host Stew Minimum. We're joined by Nicholas Djerassi. Moto's He is a cloud computing evangelist at Red Hat. Thank you so much for coming on the Cube. It's a pleasure. Thank you. So tell us a little bit about what you do at Red Hat. >>So I work with a lot of red, have partners really trying to foster the ecosystem and build red have products and solutions that can actually be deployable, repeatable for different customers. So different verticals. Financial health care doesn't really matter. For the most part, I try and just focus on cloud computing and really just evangelizing a lot of our technologies that we have. >>Okay, so So what are the kinds of things you're doing here at ignite? >>So I've been spending a lot of time actually working with some of the partners, like a center IBM. We've been doing a bunch of different webinars a little bit of hands on workshops that kind of educating people about distributed computing edge computing on dhe some of the technologies that we've been working along with Microsoft. So, uh, co engineering of sequel server The man is service offering that we're doing with open shift, which is our enterprise great kubernetes platform along many other >>different things. So So, Nicholas, you know, it's been a couple of years now that we've gotten over some of the gas. Wait. Microsoft has not said that, you know, we're killing the penguins, you know, off on the side. I was in Boston for Red Hat Summit. Tatiana Della's up on stage there, you know, Red hat. You know he's not hiding at the show. So bring us inside. You know where customers deployments are happening where engineering efforts are working together. You know, we know we've been hearing for years red hats in all of the clouds and partnering all of the merit. So what? What, you know, different or special, about the Microsoft relationship? >>I mean, honestly, I think the relationship is just evolving and growing because our customers were asking for it right there, going towards hybrid and multi cloud type of strategies. They want to be able to take advantage of, you know, running rail within their own data. Centers were running rails specifically on top of Microsoft Azure, but they're also looking at other club service providers. I think it's gonna be mandated eventually at some point in time where customers are gonna start looking at diversification when it comes to running applications, wherever it makes sense, taking advantage of different you know, cloud end of service is different providers. So we've been getting a lot of time like understanding what their needs are and then trying to build the engineering to actually address those needs. I think a lot of that has really come from the co engineering that we have going on. So we have a red head engineer sitting alongside bikers, off engineers, spending a lot of time building things like the Windows distraction layer wsl things along those lines, All >>right, so I'll be a Q Khan in a couple of weeks and kubernetes still, a lot of people don't really understand where it fits Way have been saying in a Cuban eight is gonna be baked into every platform. Red hat, of course, is not really a major contributor but has a lot of customers on open shift. We had Microsoft, you know, this week, talking about as your arc is in preview. But you know, they're they're the David Taunton who does partnership, Engagement says. You know, this does not mean that we will not continue to partner with open shift in the best place to run open shift is on azure. It's the most secure. It's the best. So help us understand his toe. You know where this fits In the overall discussion of that multi hybrid cloud that we were talking about earlier. I >>think everybody wants kind of a single pane of glass for manageability. They want ability to actually look and see where their infrastructure is being deployed. One of the pitfalls of moving to the cloud is the fact that it's so easy to spend a resource is that a lot of times we lose track of where these resource is. Our or individuals leave companies, and when they leave, cos they leave behind a lot of leftover items and instances, and that becomes really costly over a period of time. Maybe not so bad if you have, you know, 100 or 500 instances. But when you talk to some of these enterprise customers that are running 110,000 instances and spending millions of dollars a month, it could get very costly. And not only that, but it could also be a security risk is well, >>so let's talk about security. What kinds of conversations are you having with regard to security and data protection at this conference? >>So you know, one of the biggest things that we've had a lot of customers asking about his redhead insights so ready in sizes away it's a smart management application that actually ties into looking at either workloads or configuration management. It could actually tell you if you have a drift. So, for example, let's say you install sequel server on well, and you miss configure it. You leave the admin account running on it, it can actually alert you and make recommendations for remediation. Or maybe in general, you're using you know, S E. Lennox is disabled. The things along those lines so insights can actually look into, uh, the operating system or the applications and tell you if there's miss configurations all right, >>a lot of discussion about developers here, You know, day to keynote was all about, you know, AP Dev And, like Sathya have been a lot of time talking about the citizen developer. Seems like that would be an intersection between what red hats doing in and Microsoft. >>Um, so I would say, you know, we're obviously very developer first focused right when we built things like Open Shift Way kind of. We're thinking about developers. Before you were thinking about operations, and later on, we actually had to build more of the operations aspects into it. Now, like, for example, in open shift, there's two different portals. There's one for the developer Focus and one for the I T admin focus with operations groups because they want to see what's going on. Developers don't really care specifically about seeing the distraction of where things are. They just want to deploy their code, get it out the door as quickly as they can, and they're really just not too concerned about the infrastructure component pieces. But all of these developers, they want to be ableto right there, applications right there code and deploy it essentially anywhere and everywhere and having the easiest process and We're really just trying to make that as simple as possible, like visual studio plug ins that we have for open shift, you know, Eclipse G and other things. So really, I mean, Red has always been very developer focused first, >>so does that seeing Microsoft Satya Nadella up on the stage talking about this developer first attitude that Microsoft is really embracing the developer. And, as you said at development for all that does seem like a bit of a cultural shift for Microsoft much more aligned with the red hat way and sort of open source. So are you talking about that within without your cut with your colleagues? That red hat, about the change that you've seen the evolution of Microsoft? >>Absolutely. I mean, if you look at, like Microsoft, the contributions that they're putting towards, like kubernetes or even contribution towards open shift, it's It's amazing, right? I mean, it's like the company's gonna complete 1 80 from the way that they used to be. There's so much more open the acquisition of Like Get Hub, for example, all these different changes, it's it's amazing. He's done amazing things with the company. I can't say enough positive things about all the wonderful things that he's done. So >>all right, so Nicholas Red Hat has an interesting position in the marketplace because you do partner with all of the clouds on the environment. While IBM is now the parent owner of Red Hat and they have a cloud, your customers touch all of them. I'm not gonna ask you to competitively analyze them. But when you're talking to customers that are choosing Azure, is there anything that calling out as to why they're choosing Microsoft where you know they have, you know, a advantage of the marketplace or what is drawing customers to them on then? Of course, redhead. With that, >>I think Microsoft is more advanced when it comes to artificial intelligence and machine learning. A, I and ML and computing. I think they're light years ahead of everyone else at this point in time. I think you know, Amazon and Google are kind of playing a little bit of catch up there, Um, and it's showing right. If you look at the power platform, for example, customers are embracing that. It's just it's fantastic looking at a lot of the changes that they've implemented and I think it's very complimentary toe the way that people are starting to build their applications. Moving towards distributed infrastructures, Micro Service's and then obviously cloud native service is as well >>in terms of the future will be. We are really just scratching the surface when it comes to to the cloud. What do you see 5 10 years from now in terms of growth rates and also in terms of the ways in which companies are using the cloud. >>So I kind of like Thio equate it towards, like, the progression that we've had with cars. I know it sounds so simple, but, you know, we went from steam engine to regular piston engines, and now we've gotten to a point where we have electric cars and there's gonna be self driving cars. I think we're gonna get to a point where code is gonna be autonomous in a sense, right self correcting ability to actually just write code and deploy it. Not really having to worry about that entire infrastructure layer. Everybody's calling it server lists. There's always gonna be a server per se, but I think we're gonna have a point where next 5 to 10 years that all of that is gonna be completely abstracted away. It's just gonna be focused on writing the code and machine learning is gonna help us actually evolve that code and make it run faster and make it run better. We're already seeing huge benefits. And when it comes to machine learning and the big data analytics and things on those lines, it's just natural progression. All right, >>love, you know what's top of mine from the customers that you're talking to Earth event. Any new learning is that you've had or, you know, things that have kind of caught your attention. >>I think the biggest thing, honestly, is really been them. The multi cloud Polly Cloud methodology that everybody seems to be embracing. It seems like every customer I'm talking to is looking at trying to avoid that vendor lock and per se, but still have that flexibility to deploy their applications wherever and still utilize cloud Native Service's without actually specifically having to, you know, go completely open source >>and one of the challenges there is every cloud. I need different skills to be able to do them. If I'm deploying it, it's the people and being able to do that. You know, we all lived through that era of trying to do multi vendor, and often it was challenges. So have we learned from what we've done in the past? Can multi cloud actually be more valuable to a company than the sum of its parts? >>I think so. And I think that's the reason why I, like Microsoft, is investing in art. For example, I think those methodologies way No multi clouds, tough. It's never gonna be easy. And so these companies need to start building in developing platforms for it. There needs to be be great if there were standard AP ice and such right, but they're never gonna do something along those lines. But I think the investments that they're putting forth now are gonna make Multiplied and Polly Cloud a lot easier in the future. And I think customers are asking for it. Customers ask for it, they're gonna build it. >>What does this mean for the workforce, though? In in terms of the kinds of candidates that cos they're going to hire because, as we said, it does require different skills and and different capabilities. So how what's your advice to the young computer scientists coming up in terms of what they should be learning. And then also, how do you think companies are making sensible of this? >>So I know from a company respectable. It's challenging a lot of companies. Especially, for example, I was talking to a very large financial institution, and they were saying that their biggest issue right now is hiring talented people to deal with Micro Service's kubernetes. Any time to hire someone, they end up getting poached by the big cloud companies. So you know, it's one of those things where people are gonna have to start diversifying their talents and look at the future. So I mean, obviously, Micro Service's are here. They're gonna continue to be here. I would say people should invest in that. But also look a server Lis, you know, I definitely think serverless these days towards the future. And then when it comes to like learning skills of multi club, I think cloud competing, that's just the number one growing in general. >>So since you didn't bring up server Lis, you know, today I hear serverless and most customers that I talked to that means a W s number two in the space probably is Microsoft, but there's efforts in to try to help, you know, give a little bit of open source and standardization there. Where's Red Hat? Stand on this. What do you see? What from Microsoft? What are you hearing from customers? >>Were heavily contribute all the different, you know, projects, trying to make server lists like easier to use and not so much specific vendors, Right? So whether that's, you know, Apache, spar or whatever you want to consider it to be, were trying to invest. Invest in those different types of technologies. I think the main issue we serve earless right now is we still don't really know how to utilize it effectively. And it's still kind of this gray area in a sense, right? It's cutting edge, bleeding edge emerging technologies. And it's just, in my opinion, it's not perfectly ready for prime time. But I think that's specifically because there's just not enough people that are actually invested in it. This point in time. So >>So what are you gonna take back with you when you head back to Phoenix from from this conference? What are the things that have sparked your interest the most. >>Gosh, I live, I would probably have to say, Really digging in deep on the Ark announcement. I think that's the thing that I'm most interested in, understanding how how we can actually contribute to that and maybe make that plug double for things like open Shift. You know, whether it's open shift on premise, open shit, running in the cloud on another, Well, architecture's, you know, things like insights. For the most part, I try and just focus on cloud computing and really just evangelizing a lot of our technologies that computing edge computing on dhe some of the technologies that we've been working along with Microsoft. we're killing the penguins, you know, off on the side. taking advantage of different you know, cloud end of service is different providers. We had Microsoft, you know, this week, talking about as your arc is in is the fact that it's so easy to spend a resource is that a lot of times we lose track of where these resource is. What kinds of conversations are you having with regard to security So you know, one of the biggest things that we've had a lot of customers asking about his redhead insights so ready you know, AP Dev And, like Sathya have been a lot of time talking about the citizen developer. like visual studio plug ins that we have for open shift, you know, Eclipse G and other things. So are you talking about that within I mean, if you look at, like Microsoft, the contributions that they're putting towards, all right, so Nicholas Red Hat has an interesting position in the marketplace because you do partner with all of the clouds I think you know, Amazon and Google are kind of playing a little bit of catch up there, We are really just scratching the surface when it comes to to I know it sounds so simple, but, you know, we went from steam engine to regular piston engines, love, you know what's top of mine from the customers that you're talking to Earth event. Native Service's without actually specifically having to, you know, go completely open If I'm deploying it, it's the people and being able to do that. And I think that's the reason why I, like Microsoft, is investing in art. In in terms of the kinds of candidates that cos they're going to hire because, So you know, but there's efforts in to try to help, you know, give a little bit of open Were heavily contribute all the different, you know, projects, trying to make server lists like easier So what are you gonna take back with you when you head back to Phoenix from from this conference? open shit, running in the cloud on another, Well, architecture's, you know, things like insights. So you have You have two Rolls Global Ecosystem Strategy and Michael Microsoft's ecosystem lead. Explain how those work and how they there is synergy between those two roles. Yeah, I mean, I started >>off with the Microsoft role, but what we figured out is that actually, the world is much bigger than just one alliance, and that's why we call ourselves the Ecosystem. So it's all about driving alliances from different partner speed as I speed Eyes V's or also smaller partners in different segments and build a whole ecosystem play. That's what I'm attempting to do. >>So how do HB and Microsoft worked together. So we've >>seen partnering for 30 years strong, strong relationship with Microsoft and really nice to see. Also today, you know some of the H p e solutions on stage and even deepening our partnership. We have several areas. Probably 34 I can talk about in the next few minutes on how we work together with Microsoft specifically. >>Yeah. So? So Barbara, You know, I think most of us remember back, you know, early if you're talking about windows and office and you know HP here what's now part of HP Inc? Not sure. As many people know about all of the places that H p e Partners, obviously on the server side, it makes sense. But Azure is something. And the Azure arc announcement Help us understand, you know, Azure stack and beyond. Where? HP. Ethan with Microsoft on the Enterprise side. >>Perfect. Absolutely. We have still in Microsoft. Oh, am business where we have actually service attached with licenses. That's not going away rights. We absolutely. It's a strong business class. We work very closely around sequel with Microsoft, and that's also worried this whole azure arc announcement fits in. But it's more than just a sequel right with this as your arc. For me, it's a announcement around deepening relationships. Both. We're interested in a hybrid strategy. I really like Thio here from Satya today. How important hybrid is for Microsoft and this announcement as your ark. That's in public preview now, right? Well, give somewhat details on that. So we'd love to work with customers on that we actually our part of the public review and if anyone is interested, love to hear from customers. Please come to me, Barbara Holman's and we'll hook you up and get into the program. It's really about the hybrid piece, right that we both worked >>in Barbara H. P. E. If my understanding plays on both sides of it, it's not just in the data center with some gear there, but as you said, there's a sequel. The application side, you know, hybrid HP, you know, plays across the board, >>Indeed, So I don't know if you know about HB is actually a expert MSP partner for Azure. We got that last year. We're very proud of what I think we're one of 50 world by its partners. That also means we can actually offer Manage Service's Migration Service is helping people to move to an azure based clout. And that actually came partially because off our position off CTP Cloud Technology Partners, but also read pixie in the UK, and there are no old part off our point. Next service is group, and so as such, we have numerous customers were actually helped into the public cloud. Help them to find the right place. Because if you don't know if you've seen the video from Eric Poodle, that was part of the announcement today as well around as your ark, this is all about finding the right mix off your applications, and this is where we work together and a perfect fit. >>What are some of the biggest challenges you're seeing from your cut from your customers in terms of how you might, how Azure Arc might be the solution for them >>so as your ark? It's hard to say at this >>stage, because I just really don't work for Michael >>Self. So, yeah, we have to ask these people. But again, what I understand division is really that way will be able to manage hybrid environments in a in a better way, and again, this is what HP You know, we have a lot off our tour, of course, but we also announce that our hardware, all of that, will be available as a service within the next two for years. So we're moving in that direction in addition to Azure. And I think this will help customers to take adventures in the end. But it's hard to say Right, So you on this. This is very new. At this stage, the odds are right >>and this is a Microsoft show, not on HP show, but I I read somewhere that you had done a talk. Fear no cloud with H. P m. Our company's afraid. I mean, how would you describe the atmosphere with the companies that you work with? I worked >>in the cloud space, but for the last 10 years or longer, you know, it was on different parts off the industry there and from the early adoption. Really. People looking into you know, should I trust my data in this specific with this cloud provider or which applications am I gonna move? And I think today people have lost the fear a little bit, but they still don't know what to put where and there's applications, you do not want to move in a cloud. There's others that you for your specific company, you don't want to move, and another company may do that. And that's what we're trying to help them, right? So don't you don't have to fear the cloud you can. Actually, we can help you to adopt it at your pace in your way and so that you take most of the advantage out of it. >>But Barbara would love to hear any color you could give from the joint HP, EA and Microsoft customers very much. The announcement today feels like it completely. It's an update on the hybrid message, but A B and Microsoft have been working together on solutions like Azure Stack for a number of years. So what? What's working well today? What do you think you know? This will mean down the road a CZ. Some of these solutions start start to mature even further. >>Maybe moving to another area that HB and Microsoft worked very well together is around the modern workplace practice, and in there we just had a really nice win with Portia thing, actually in Austria, but planning to roll this out no further than that, and h b E's team has helped them to move from the current applicator from the current environment. Thio up two dates. Microsoft 3 65 Environment There's em OD in the UK and it's fast twice if I can talk about M. O D on stage here and they said yes, another customer that we should help to move to a Microsoft 3 65 environment. So there's numerous customers that trust HP with Microsoft in moving their their information to the to the clouds. Yeah, that's one example Asha Stack we have. You know, there's several customers that hard won about ashes. Takis. Difficult to talk about the customers because a lot of them are in the government sector on. So you know, there's a few that we can talk about, but they're mostly service providers, but the really big names, unfortunately, we can talk about because of the conference shit Confidentiality. Yeah, >>trust is one of the things that we keep hearing so much of it about at this conference. Satya Nadella talked about it on the main stage this morning in terms of the relationship that you have and HP standing in the technology world. How do you feel trust with customers? And how do you make sure you are maintaining that? That bond of trust and also the reputation of being a trustworthy partner? >>Yeah, I think I love you know, I love Saturdays, Point on trust because that actually makes the difference between you. Just deliver hardware and you walk away. And this is probably coming back to Azure stack Hop, as it's called now, right? You know, we've been told actually by Microsoft that we've accomplished with the customers from a delivery from a You know, we don't just walk away and say Good luck with the equipment you're on your own really helped them thio and make sure it's working for them. So for me, that's the key that you can come back to a customer afterwards and the customer will actually have you in your office again. >>Well, Barbara, I think back for most of my career what one of the hallmarks of an H. P e solution Was that the turnkey offering we know from, you know, ordering through delivery through, you know, up and running. HP has been streamlining that you know, I think back my entire career cloud has been not necessarily the simplest solutions out there. So maybe give us directionally. How does HPD partner with Microsoft on dhe your customers toe make? I would easier as WeII go through this journey >>S O s aside. Whereas your expert MSP partner a such we have done several of course trainings with Microsoft. We make sure that our people are educated on it way have, you know, with red pixy in the UK it's now part of point next, but I love to say the name because people really associate still with this a specific, strong and trustworthy team. You really build up a very good practice with Microsoft. There's, you know, local deal clinics where we really work in the specific deal. Steal by deal on how we can make it better for the customer. So a lot off local engagement. But for me, that all happens in country. Write me at a global level. I can only help them and steered a little bit. But that's also for me trust. It's a person to person relationship that happens in country. >>And would you say there are big differences country to country in terms of how willingly trust you and and and then how long it takes to build that relationship. >>So I'm gonna get in >>trouble now with some of the country. >>No, I you know the >>somewhere, even your CEO. >>You know, it's no, I mean you and I personally lift in Canada for a while, and so for me, it's some people are harder, you know, you need to get to know them. But then trust is even deeper then some of the others. But I have to say, it's all we're I mean, we're, I would say, from all those who look at h p were really a global company, right? And from this goes from Japan, Thio South Pacific too. You know, many countries in Asia will be very successful with ashes, stack specifically and always in Europe, the Middle East, all the way to North America, South America. So, I mean, that's the nice thing about HPD, I would say for the customers as well that they really get a global view on DA, a global company that can trust. >>So you're here, Ed ignite from Germany. What are the kinds of conversations you're having. And what do you think you're gonna take back with you when you go back to the office next week? So the other piece >>and we have ah, quite big. Both hear it at the event, right? We have a very nice edge line 8000 with us, which is kind of a ruggedized us or a smaller version. It's kindof almost my hand back, kind of to carry along, which has caught a lot of interest from the customers. So just standing there, watching the customers, asking, What is it? Can you tell me more about it? Rest is, you know, I love the bus and I love the actually part of the Microsoft Advisory Council for inspired, which is the partner event, right? But I love the bus to see here what's what's going on and always like to see how other people what they do, what they what they do at these events and then just Microsoft. I think it's wonderful, wonderful company. The inspiration. The story today was just into end a great story with great customer stories as well. So she does to the Microsoft team. AstraZeneca is a name that probably a lot of folks know in the bio medical pharmaceutical space. But for those that don't give us an overview of AstraZeneca. What you guys are what you d'oh! >>Obviously we're we're, ah, bio pharmaceutical company with global presence way be used. The primary care takes off. Medicines be sale throughout the world. So everything from Kearney care to tiu oncology onda also are massive. Around six years ago, before we went live knowing how critical data is toe AstraZeneca's business, What was the data strategy like a few years ago? >>It was pretty convoluted six years ago when am I fought during the actual Danica over largely exhaust to various companies? So their strategy basically that have one. We don't really have much of a strategy for looking after our deal with five or six different backup products, but then the cinnamon on lane their storage products is now. So over the last 56 years, can stealing that down to one key data storage provider in the APP and also for backup from the store combo. We do still have some leg. A few years ago, six years ago, we didn't have a date, a strategy. What was some of the you know from the top, down from the C suite down, maybe from the board down saying, Hey, guys, we have to get our hands around. I mean, this is before GDP are But in terms of the opportunities that I provided the company, where did that initiative come from? And a new year old come about now. But you guys want a couple of different routes, Talk to us a little bit about that initiative and the initial directions to where you are now. >>Yes, O. R. Xia Old Smalley obviously had a vision for how the country is going to progress. Set sail in his tenure on a massive pile that was understanding with our data waas how it was used on but most importantly have it was protected as well. And so that kind of drove the insertion from likes of HCL Congress and emphasis into looking after our own environment. You can, after our own idea for choosing strategies as well, so that organically company could grow based on best directions for using that there that we could meet from what we had the radio through collaboration with other bio farmers is a game just for the greater good of fame than that. And they actually shared a quote from you during the keynote before Actually, before everyone walked. From a business perspective, Combo has done a lot of evolving in the last nine months with the new leadership. It's too. And you were talking about some of the new technology, some of the new announcements from that evolutionary perspective and what you guys like about it. What are you seeing in terms of them going forward? Are you saying hey, there really listening? They're looking at use cases like ours, learning from it to not only make the technology is better, but to expand their portfolio. >>I mean, for a lot of it's based in the constant evolution of the FBI's that convo used for access and videos need parts. Technology will be backing up of the M two, backing up kubernetes containers and using that in the Secret Service's environment is Val to Tolliver's to ensure that whatever it comes to get from Lourdes cannot feel like several. It's computing environments that don't understand what what they put watch. So we can either reuse it, destroy, are used different manner, so that for us, that's great. Because obviously for our own C A c d pay planes, they're all FBI driven on to be able to use a convert production. Did you start from a data started perspective, like within one division or one part of the company to maybe pilot, because you ended up with a whole bunch of different software solutions in there. EVP general manager, Telco and Edge of Cloud for Vienna. Where Thanks for coming on. Thanks for having me. I know you're super busy. We don't have a lot of time. Get right to it. Um five g a big part of the key. No discussion that's gonna enable a whole bunch of Pakal the pregame show pre gaming not even talk about that. Also. Telco on the Edge Computing Big part Michael Dell said, Edges the future Now these air to emerging areas for you guys. What's the positioning? What's the update? >> No, absolutely. I mean, if you look a tw telecom infrastructure. For the longest time, telcos have played a role just as pure basic connectivity providers. And with five g coming on board, they finally have an opportunity to break out of that and redefine the cloud off the future. So for us the big opportunity around five g is not just the better provisioning off like Higher Man With Service is to consumer for voice and data buy the whole set off new enterprise service is that can be provided on top of this five g network. And in order to be able to do that, you really need to go in with a virtualized telco Cloud architecture. Underneath that, and so we are working with carriers globally now preparing them for five G with an architecture that's going to help them deploy. New service is faster for both their consumer as well as enterprise. >> Going to be the white knight at, so to speak. For these telcos because they've been struggling for years over the top and any kind of differentiates service is even in the network layer. Exactly. I've had tons of rack and stack machine, so they're after their well, well stacked up in terms of computer storage. Also connectivity to the edge. That's the back hall. So you have back haul, which is connectivity. Companies that have massive expertise in scale but fumbling in operational cloud natives that >> by not just that, but I also think that having the idea off on application platform that allows them to go and deploy service is faster and then decide whether they're just going to play at the network connectivity level or at the application tear or a full SAS tear. These are all options that are open to them now with this notion off. Telco five G coupled with an NFI and cloud telco cloud infrastructure. Underneath that and never before have they had this option to doing that. And this is now open to them >> and the cloud native is there greenfield for AP supporter having applications on top of it. Exact icing on the cake, right? >> Exactly, Exactly. And so they're all looking at core architectures and then, potentially, their radio architectures now all being opened up toe deploying new service is that are much faster to provisions and then extending that to EJ and >> five G's deploying. So we know it's out there. So it is pre game is Pat, Guzman said. You know, not even an inning Yet in the metaphor of baseball innings, I >> gotta ask you get my phone. That's not that's fake ill. The surface area is going to radically get bigger with this capability. Yeah, security's gonna be baked in. This is the number one concern for io ti. And more importantly, industrial I ot We've been reporting on silicon angle dot com. This is a national security issue because we're under cyber attacks. Town's getting locked out with ransomware critical infrastructure exposed. We're free country, and I want to be free. We don't lock down. So you have security built into this new promiscuous landscape that is called the coyote Edge. Because you wanna have no perimeter. You want the benefits of cloud. But one whole malware is in there. One take over physical device could cost lives. >> Yeah, there's a big concern. Yeah. What's your thoughts? Yeah, No. So I think there >> are two ways of looking at it. One is the way you looked at it in terms of the security perimeter expanding and then us making sure that we have the right level off infrastructure security baked in to enable this to be an easier, manageable security architecture. This is sort of the pitch you heard from Mia Mary, even in the context of our acquisition of carbon black and how we're thinking about baking security into the infrastructure, the other way of looking at this is if you think about some of the concerns around providers off telecom infrastructure today and how there might be or might not be security back doors. This is happening in today's hardware infrastructure. Okay, so in fact, I would argue that a sick software defined architecture, er, actually ends up providing you greater levels of security. Because what you now have is the option off running all of these network functions as secured as software workloads in a policy envelope that you can introspect. And then you can decide what kind of security you want to deploy on what kind of workload. >> That's an innovative approach. But it doesn't change much, really, from an infrastructure standpoint, does it? Or does it? >> No, it does, >> because now, instead of having a hardware box where you have to worry, I mean, if it's a close, hard red box and you don't quite know what is happening there, the question is, is that more secure than a infrastructure radio running the software that you can actually introspect. I would argue that the software defined approach is more secure than having a hardware box that you don't know. >> I would buy the premise that certainly we know that supply chain concerned. You know the speculation Super Micro, which never was proved. >> It doesn't matter who the vendor is or what the country is. It really is a concern in terms of not being able to introspect what has happened Going inside >> for my tea shop. I'm running VM where operating I want developers. So now you're going to tell Coz you revitalize their business model? They had a rule out appy. Now what did you see? That connecting is gonna be connective tissue between >> I'll think about it. I didn't feel goto a telco. We look at really three stakeholders in there. One is I t the second Is there be to be or enterprise facing business and then the 3rd 1 is their core and access network or the CTO. We're now have a value proposition of having a uniform architecture across all three stakeholders with the uniform ability to create applications and drop it on top of each of these infrastructures with the ability to manage and secure these again in a uniform way, not just that, but also make this work well with other cloud infrastructures private, hyper scale, public as well as EJ. >> That's table stakes. You have to do that. These jokers have to operate whatever >> well it is, But it's not. I mean, if you think about what the infrastructure off a tailcoat today is, it's far from that, because it's it's sort of a closed environment. You can't access anything from a telco environment in order to go build an application to it, and it does not resemble anything like any club >> you could enable Telco. Just I'm just kind of thinking connecting the dots here real time in the Cube. If I'm a telco, hell, I'll take that VM wear on a deli and see model. Make me a cloud and I'll sell Cloud Service is to markets that kind of >> it is. Actually it's a very important part of our business model because most telcos would not move their own infrastructure from a network standpoint onto a public cloud. But they are eagerly awaiting the ability to operate their own network as a cloud, and if they can have somebody manage that for them, then that is very much within the >> you're enabling. An increase in the number of cloud service provides potentially the paint on the makeup of the telco tier one tier two tier three size. Pretty much >> potentially. I mean, it's taking an existing operator and having them operate in a more agile way and potentially increasing anew form off a cloud service >> provided telcos wouldn't move into the public cloud because of they want to control. And the cost is that right or it's >> mostly control. It's not about cost. It's about taking What is your sort of coordinating for, ah, packet corps or for a radio network? Yeah, and there is also an angle around competition, I think telcos our what in about the Amazons of the world and the azure eyes of the world potentially becoming a service provided >> themselves. And that's what I wanted to ask you about the business impact of all this discussion you guys were having is, you know, the cost for bits coming down. The amount of data is increasing faster. You got over the top providers just, you know, picking off the telcos. Telcos can't compete their infrastructures of so hardened. Will this all change that? >> Absolutely So. I think that it has the potential to changing all that. I don't think all the telcos will take advantage of it. Some off them might end up being more traditional and sort of sticking to where they were. But for those that are willing to make the leap, I mean, as an example, Vodafone is a customer that has actually gone in with this architecture with us. A. T and T is working with us with the Vela Cloud software from via Mary bringing a new form off branch computer branch connectivity through SD man. So these are all examples of telcos that are actually leading the >> charter. But if they don't lean in, they have this vision there either. Well, it's either because they're protected by their local government or they're going to go out of business. No, I would >> agree. I mean, it's sort of silly from our standpoint to be talking about five G and not thinking about this as the architecture for five, right? I mean, if you only focus on radio waves and your wireless network that's like a part of the problem, but you really need to have the ability to deploy these agile service's. Otherwise, you could get killed by >> the O. T. T. So how do you compete against the competition? What's the business plan that you have? C. Five G? We see that in the horizon that's evolving its evolution, so to speak. Pun intended on edge is certainly very relevant for enterprises, whether it's manufacturing or industrial or just people. Yeah, >> I'd say there are two things. One is a CZ. I'm sure you heard from folks at GM, where our vision is this notion of any any anywhere. We've talked about any cloud at any application that any device. So that becomes one of the strongest different chaining factors in terms of what V Amir can bring. Tow any of our customers compared to the competition, right? Nobody can actually make it really across these dimensions. If you then take that architecture and use that to deploy a telco cloud, we're now making investments that are telco specific that allow the tailcoat than take this and make the most out of it. As an example, we're investing in open stack we're investing in container ization. We just bought a company called Johanna and Johanna essentially allows the operator to go and provide metrics from their radio access networks. Use at that to train a learning engine and then feed that back so that the operator can tune their network to get like fewer dropped calls in the region. So if you combined technology like that with this, any cloud infrastructure that we have underneath that that's the best in class deployment methodology for any. Tell Cho to deploy >> five. Your business model metrics for you internally is get Maur deployments. What stage of development five G certainly is in a certain stage, but you know, edges there. Where is the Progress bar? If you're the kind of oh, >> it's actually mold phenomenally. I mean, every time we have conversations like this, we're moving about further in terms off. How many carriers are deploying on via mare on a telco cloud Architecture? How many subscribers are basically being serviced by an architectural like this? And then how many network functions are being deployed? Two of'em air architecture. So we are over 100 carriers now we are over. We have about 800 million subscribers, or so that about globally are being serviced by a V M Air supported network. On then, we have essentially over 120 network functions that >> are operating on top of you. Usually bring in all the same stuff that's announced that the show that stuff's gonna fold into the operating platform or Joe Chuckles have different requirements. Off course. It's >> both. We take the best of what is there from the sort of overall vehement factory and then as a team. My team then builds other widgets on top that are telco specific. >> How big is your your tam up Terry for you? >> Well, so the best way to look at it as telcos globally spend about a trillion dollars in capital investment and then probably to X that in terms of their operating expenditure over the course off all of the things that they do right? And out of that, I would say probably a tent off that. So if you take about $100 billion opportunity, opens itself up toe infrastructure investment in terms off the kinds of things that we're talking about now, they're not gonna move from like 0 200 of course. So if you take some period of time, I would say good subset off that $100 billion opportunity is gonna open itself up >> to it. This kind of business cases, eliminating that two x factor, at least reducing it. Is that exactly? That's not just that Service is that's, >> ah, cost reduction alternative. But then you have the ability to go deploy. Service is faster, so it's really a combination off both sort of carrot and the stick, right? I mean, the character here is the ability to go monetize More new service is with five G faster. The stick is that if you don't do it, Ortiz will get there faster and your costs off. Deploying your simple service is will increase his >> telcos, in your opinion, have what they have to do to get the DNA chops to actually be able to compete with the over to top OT T providers and be more agile. I mean, it's obviously sort of new skills that they have to bring in a new talent. Yeah, >> well, first and foremost, they need toe get to a point where their infrastructure is agile and they get into a business model off knowing how to monetize that agile infrastructure. So, for example, they could offer network as a service on a consume as you go basis. They could offer a platform as a service on top off that network in order for or titties to go build applications so they can do Rev shares with the forties. Or they could have offer. Full service is where they could go in and say, We are the conferencing provider for videoconferencing for enterprises. I mean, these are all models that >> the great conversation love to do. Your Palo Alto? Yes. Have you in our studio want to do more of a deep dive? We love the serious, super provocative, and it's important Final question for you. Though Pat Sr here on the Cube, lay asked him, Look back in the past 10 years. Yeah, look back in the next 10 years. What waves should everyone be riding? He said three things that working security and kubernetes humans being number one actually promoting convinced everyone for the ride, for obvious reasons, clouded. I get that, but networking Yeah, that's your world. That's changing. Which which events do you go to where you meet your audience out there in the telco because networking is a telco fundamental thing. Sure moving packets around. This is a big thing, >> eh? So far, operator networking related stuff, I would say. I mean the biggest shows that for us would be Mobile World Congress as an example, right? It's where many operators are. But I would also say that when we do our own events like this is the ember. But the movie forums in in Asia packers an example. A lot of the telco conversations I find they are best done one on one before. Tell >> me. So we discovered generation in the high school. Our technology teacher air showed as the contest, and we decided to join. And we're old friends. We're here at the Mosconi Center. This is Day one of our three day coverage of Google next twenty nineteen, the second year the Cube has done Google. Next, Google's Big Cloud show, Thomas Curry and up on stage today, the newly minted head of Google Cloud. I'm Dave Volante and this is my co host student, and you're watching the Cube, the leader in live tech coverage. And we're here with Cy Mukundan, who was the director of product management at Cohesive deci. Great to see you again. Thanks for coming back in the queue. >> Thanks, Dave. Thanks. Too nice to be here. >> So if you could show it's hopping. Your clouds were all the action is. But let's talk a little bit about how he city you guys were on fire growing like crazy. What's the quick update on the city? >> Cool. Yeah, cohesive ahs you might have heard last year we had a big funding round way. Heard investment from Softbank. I know it's a result off that we just launched cohesively Japan s. So that's how we're going to market in Japan. So that's expanding our international presence, particularly in Asia. And then here, you know, not America. There's been a growing number off customer acquisition, and I would say, more importantly, repeat customers as well. You know, you you really realize that with enterprises, it's the repeat. Customers help you drive more adoption. That customer case studies on that again gets new customers, right? So that's what you're seeing and cohesive e >> big mega trends that are tail winds and opportunities for Kohi City and other other players in the space. Cloud, obviously, is one of those big ones that changed the way in which we develop applications changed the developer world. But also there's a desire to get Maura out of backups. I want to talk about you know, some of those trends. What is driving your business. What do you guys see? A CZ. The big trends. What's the premise? >> Yeah, So the premises data protection is no longer the insurance policy, so to speak that customers were thinking about they're really thinking about. What else can I do beyond just data protection? Right. So That's where the power ofthe cohesively platform comes in. In terms ofthe, once the data is there on platform, the ability to do other things. Stability to leverage it for tester for disaster recovery for analytics so recently. You know, sometime back we actually launched our APP store, both powered by applications that can know where Bill by Cho Hee City and then also in partnership. It's plunked on a couple of other renders where these APs are now running on the data set that has landed on cohesive. So customers are now truly realizing the vision that we had promised to them in terms of being able to do more with the data. >> So speed a cloud. You guys get hard news, so take us through that. >> Yeah, so today's an exciting day. We actually released our first SAS offering. It's caused. Could cohesively cloud backup service for Google Cloud Platform? So think of it as truly backup. A service broadly speaking, three things right? So it provides that enterprise grade data protection that customers are looking for in G. C. P. So you heard in the main stage today about Google warning to partner with another windows and This is one such partnership. There we provide backup and recovery for applications running on ***, so that's the first one enterprise grade. The second aspect ofthe the solution is the fact that it is truly scalable in nature, but at the same time provides that granular recovery capabilities when the customer needs that data back right on. The last one is really the ease off use and management, because when you're doing things in the cloud, customers are usedto ease off use in terms of consuming the service, right. So here it's integrated with Google both in the marketplace as well as in terms ofthe the building that they get. So everything is all integrated with G C. P. All >> right, so if so, we've talked to all the hybrid multi cloud shows, you know, Big virtual ization show in all three of the Big Cloud shows. What differentiates the SAS offering from what, what cohesive has been offering in the past? >> Yeah, I think so. Up until now, it's bean to major things that we have delivered for customers. One is the Khyber return videos that you guys have alluded to as well and then born in the Cloud Cloud native, their customers still sort of like Do it yourself, you know, deployed the platform from us and then perform all the day today infrastructure management and keep planning around it. This one truly is a different shade or game changer. In the sense start, it's truly backup as a service, so no longer there's a customer need to worry about the infrastructure management aspect ofthe things. They just go into the marketplace as easy as a few clicks, deploy the solution on. Then they're open running in terms ofthe being able to back up and recover. So it's it's really the SAS model. The fact that we're embracing sass on our customers are heading in the direction is what truly differentiates this particular off >> so sight. Why why Google? Let's just start there is to know what you're hearing from customers. Be back. How come this is the first *** offering? Your >> long I think two things right. One is there are enterprises wear hearing more and more enterprises adopting, you know, Google Cloud as well. So this was obviously driven by some customers Summerlee customers asking for such a solution, so that always helps make a business case Right on then. The second one is you heard in the keynote this morning about Google being truly open, winding toward more with partners. And this is the result of one such strategic partnerships a Google sort of collab collaborating with co history and working together to get the solution toe and customer. So >> you see them is more partner friendly. Can you discern the difference between Google and other partners Air, You know, I'm looking for Okay, I heard it on stage. I mean, they're doing so you know, actions speak louder than words, But a za partner, do you discern >> that? I think it resonates well with me for just based on our experience with the whole launch and everything. I'll give you a couple of instances right on. This relates to the fact that you know, Google's acknowledging that they're also learning along with customers, especially the enterprise customers. So we have a number of enterprise customers and knowledge of how to work with them. And to be honest, you know, some of the things on their marketplace and other things required a close collaboration between us. Not everything was there out of the box and Google was a very willing partner. Toe, listen, tow us and collaborate with us on. I make things happen on the second aspect ofthe it really comes down to also the gold market benefits that we're beginning to see as part of that partnership because it's one thing to build a solution. But then taking it to their in customers and our mutual customers is also a big aspect of the partnership. >> Okay, I gotta ask you size. So I hear a lot. I don't have to back up my data. It's in the cloud. Explain our audience. The difference between sort of that statement and what you know, backup recovery, a data protection, modern data protection is all about Why can't I just back it up in the cloud and Google take care of it? >> Yeah, I think not just Google, but with all the clouds. What? What they provide is availability right on the fact that data stays in no multiple regions. But it's essentially the same data set that replicated across different zones are regions a CZ, they call it. But at the end of the day, you know customers want to be able to go back to a certain point in time because there are several reasons for it. One is human errors, you know. That's probably the number one cause of why you know, they they need data protection. But besides that, there's a reason to do step on a certain version ofthe the data is there's a reason John anonymized the data. So a lot of reasons to just, you know, go for a data protection solution beyond what the Cloud Windows offer it offer themselves available. >> One of things we hear is in a hybrid and multi cloud world. I've got my data and a lot of places. So if I can have something that is agnostic tall, those locations that companies like cohesive have done, how does this new SAS offering fit into all of those other environments? If I'm already cohesive customers, they're going to be a similar look and feel. And am I gonna understand that you know what? What? What's the same? What's different? >> Yeah, so we have ah, Helios, which is our SAS management portal. So that's what customers used today. For all they're both on premise as well as crowd deployments on the way it works is it provides you that truly I know single pane of glass is sort of very abuse word, but it really provides us a single view into all your environments across raiders, different deployments off cohesively, whether it's at the edge of the data center or in the cloud. And so in the service, we leverage the same, you know, Helios Banishment portal, but in a much more simply fired format because you're you're taking some off the, you know, administrative aspect away from the customers and having to just provide them just this. The service Functional lady off. Just backup in >> recovery. What is the pricing model for the cloud Backup service is a capacity based usage base monthly. How's it work? >> S Oh, it's truly a consumption based, more like everything else that we're aware off in the clouds. So the way it's priced is it's based on the consumption consumption on the service, the city service, and here's where we provide that benefit back to the inn customer in terms ofthe great deal application and the storage efficiency benefits that we offer provide a lot, you know, lower capacity that actually lands on the service. A supposed to you know what, maybe running in your primary environment. So we provide that benefit back to the customer in terms ofthe charging them on a usage based on consumption based model, in this case, based on the capacity that's landed on the service. And so it's again, like I said earlier, it's integrated with the Google billing. So when a customer looks at their monthly Google infra infrastructure costs, it also includes an additional line item for the cohesively service. So the customer at the end of the day just has to deal with their gcpd. >> So it's a true cloud cloud pricing model, absolute, which is which I say that because much, if not most, of the SAS products that you purchase are not what I would consider to cloud model You'LL you know, make the annual commitment or a multi year commitment. And as the vast majority of the SAS says, the infrastructure guys, they think, got it right. >> You could scale only one way up. Yeah, >> that's good. All right, so I give you closing thoughts on on Google Next your your announcement of the future for the city. >> The one thing that excited me from the keynote this morning was was Antos. I mean, they talked about how that could be a single control plane, not just for G c p, but potentially across other clouds, clouds as well and and even on trim on. That's where I think there is more synergy. There's more partnership because we excel in the data center we excel in the cloud on. So I'm looking forward to this partnership with Google to extend cloud backup service beyond what we have released today. >> Still, what you call the motion for the cloud that powerful concept and we know what the motion did for virtual ization.
