Breaking Analysis: COVID-19 Takeaways & Sector Drilldowns Part II

Impact on Budgets Docker Korakia is back in with me soccer. It's great to see you really >>again for having >>your very welcome. Soccer is, of course, the director of research, that we are our data partner and man. I mean, you guys have just been digging into the data or a court reiterate We're down, you know, roughly around minus 5% for the year. The thing about what we're doing here and where they want to stress in the audience that that's going to change. The key point is we don't just do ah, placeholder and update you in December. Every time we get new information, we're going to convey it to you. So let's get right into it. What we want to do today is you kind of part two from the takeaways that we did last week. So let's start with the macro guys. If you bring up the first chart, take us through kind of the top three takeaways. And just to reiterate where we're at >>Yeah, no problem. And look, as you mentioned, uh, what we're doing right now is we're collecting the pulse of CIOs. And so things change on and we continue to expect them to change, you know, in the next few weeks, in the next few months, as things change with it. So just kind of give a recap of the survey and then kind of going through some of our top macro takeaways. So in March mid March, we launched our Technology Spending Intention Survey. We had 1250 CIOs approximately. Take that survey. They provided their updated 2020 verse 2019 spending intentions, right? So effectively, they first Davis, those 20 21st 19 spending intentions in January. And then they went ahead and up state of those based on what happened with move it and then in tandem with that, we did this kind of over 19 drill down survey where we asked CEOs to estimate the budget impact off overnight in versus what they originally forecast in the year. And so that leads us to our first take away here, where we essentially aggregated the data from all these CIOs in that Logan 19 drill down survey. And we saw a revision of 900 basis points so down to a decline of 5%. And so coming into the year, the consensus was about 4% growth. Ah, and now you can see we're down about 5% for the year. And again, that's subject to change. And we're going again re measure that a Z kind of get into June July and we have a couple of months under our belt with the folks at night. The second big take away here is, you know, the industries that are really indicating those declines and spend retail, consumer airlines, financials, telco I key services in consulting. Those are the verticals, as we mentioned last week, that we're really seeing some of the largest Pullbacks and spend from consumers and businesses. So it makes sense that they are revising their budgets downwards the most. And then finally, the last thing we captured that we spoke about last week as well as a few weeks before that, and I think that's really been playing out the last kind of week in 1/2 earnings is CIOs are continuing to press the pedal on digital transformation. Right? We saw that with Microsoft, with service now last night, right, those companies continued the post good numbers and you see good demand, what we're seeing and where those declines that we just mentioned earlier are coming from. It's it's the legacy that's the on premise that your place there's such a concentration of loss and deceleration within some of those companies. And we'll kind of get into that more a Z go through more slides. But that's really what kind of here, you know, that's really what we need to focus on is the declines are coming from very select vendors. >>Yeah, and of course you know where we were in earning season now, and we're paying close attention to that. A lot of people say I just ignore the earnings here, you know, you got the over 19 Mulligan, but But that's really not right. I mean, obviously you want to look at balance sheets, you want to look at cash flows, but also we're squinting through some of the data your point about I t services and insulting is interesting. I saw another research firm put out that you know, services and consulting was going to be OK. Our data does, you know, different. Uh, and we're watching. For instance, Jim Kavanaugh on IBM's earnings call was very specific about the metrics that they're watching. They're obviously very concerned about pricing and their ability. The book business. There we saw the cloud guys announced Google was up in the strong fifties. The estimate is DCP was even higher up in the 80% range. Azure, you know, we'll talk about this killing it. I mean, you guys have been all over of Microsoft and its presence, you know, high fifties aws solid at around 34% growth from a larger base. But as we've been reporting, you know, downturns. They've been they've been good to cloud. >>That's right. And I think, you know, based on the data that we've captured, um, you know, it's people are really pressing the pedal on cloud and SAS with this much remote work, you need to have you know, that structure in place to maintain productivity. >>Okay, let's bring up the next slide. Now. We've been reporting a lot on this sort of next generation work loads Bob one Dato all about storage and infrastructures of service. Compute. There's an obviously some database, but there's a new analytics workload emerging. Uh, and it's kind of replacing, or at least disinter mediating or disrupting the traditional e d ws. I've said for years. CDW is failed to live up to its expectations of 360 degree insights and real time data, and that's really what we're showing here is some of the traditional CDW guys are getting hit on Some of the emerging guys, um, are looking pretty good. So take us through what we're looking at here. Soccer. >>Yeah, no problem. So we're looking at the database data warehousing sector. What you're looking at here is replacement rates. Um And so, as example, if you see up in with roughly 20% replacement, what that means is one out of five people who took the survey for that particular sector for that vendor indicated that they were replacing, and so you can see here for their data. Cloudera, IBM, Oracle. They have very elevated and accelerating replacement rates. And so when we kind of think about this space. You can really see the bifurcation, right? Look how well positioned the Microsoft AWS is. Google Mongo, Snowflake, low replacements, right low, consistent replacements. And then, of course, on the left hand side of the screen, you're really seeing elevated, accelerating. And so this space is It kind of goes with that theme that we've been talking about that we covered last week by application, right when you think about the declines that you're seeing and spend again, it's very targeted for a lot of these kind of legacy legacy vendors. And we're again. We're seeing a lot of the next gen players that Microsoft AWS in your post very strong data. And so here, looking within database, it's very clear as to which vendors are well positioned for 2020 and which ones look like they're being ripped out and swapped out in the next few months. >>So this to me, is really interesting. So you know, you you've certainly reported on the impact that snowflake is having on Terra data. And in some of IBM's business, the old man, he's a business. You can see that here. You know, it's interesting. During the Hadoop days, Cloudera Horton works when they realize that it didn't really make money on Hadoop. They sort of getting the data management and data database and you're seeing that is under pressure. It's kind of interesting to me. Oracle, you know, is still not what we're seeing with terror data, right, Because they've got a stranglehold on the marketplace That's right, hanging in there. Right? But that snowflake would no replacements is very impressive. Mongo consistent performer. And in Google aws, Microsoft AWS supports with Red Shift. They did a one time license with Park Cell, which was an MPP database. They totally retooled a thing. And now they're sort of interestingly copycatting snowflake separating compute from storage and doing some other moves. And yet they're really strong partners. So interesting >>is going on and even, you know, red shift dynamodb all. They all look good. All these all these AWS products continue screen Very well. Ah, in the data warehousing space, So yeah, to your point, there's a clear divergence of which products CIOs want to use and which ones they no longer want in their stack. >>Yeah, the database market is very much now fragment that it used to be in an Oracle db two sequel server. As you mentioned, you got a lot of choices. The Amazon. I think I counted, you know, 10 data stores, maybe more. Dynamodb Aurora, Red shift on and on and on. So a really interesting space, a lot of activity in that new workload that I'm talking about taking, Ah, analytic databases, bringing data science, pooling into that space and really driving these real time insights that we've been reporting on. So that's that's quite an exciting space. Let's talk about this whole workflow. I t s m a service now. Just just announced, uh, we've been consistently crushing it. The Cube has been following them for many, many years, whether, you know, from the early days of Fred Luddy, Bruce Lukman, the short time John Donahoe. And now Bill McDermott is the CEO, but consistent performance since the AIPO. But what are we actually showing here? Saga? Yeah, You bring up that slot. Thank you. >>So our key take away on kind of the i t m m i t s m i t workflow spaces. Look, it's best in breed, which is service now, or some of the lower cost providers. Right There's really no room for middle of the pack, so >>this is an >>interesting charts. And so what you're looking at here, there's a few directives, so kind of walk you through it and then I'll walk through. The actual results is we're looking within service now accounts. And so we're seeing how these companies are doing within or among customers that are using service. Now, today, where you're looking at on the ex, access is essentially shared market share our shared customers, and then on the Y axis you're seeing essentially the spend velocity off those vendors within service. Now's outs, right? So if the vendor was doing well, you would see them moving up into the right, right? That means they're having more customer overlap with service now, and they're also accelerating Spend, but you can see if you will get zendesk. If you look at BMC, it's a managed right. You can see there either losing market share and spend within service now accounts or they're losing spend right and zendesk is another example Here, Um, and what's actually interesting is, and we've had a lot of anecdotal evidence from CIOs is that look they start with service. Now it's best in breed, but a few of them have said, Look, it's got expensive, Um, and so they would move over Rezendes. And then they would look at it versus a conference that last year, and we had a few CEO say, Look at last quarter of the price of zendesk. Andi moved away from Zendesk and subsequently well, with last year. And so it's just it's interesting that, you know, during these times where you know CIOs are reducing their budgets on that look, it's either best of breed or low cost. There's really no room in the middle, and so it's actually kind of interesting. In this space, it's It's an interesting dynamic and being usually it's best of breed or low cost. Rarely do you kind of see both win, and I think that's what kind of makes the space interesting. >>I've been following service now for a number of years. I just make a few comments there. First of all, you know, workday was the gold standard in enterprise software for the longest time and, you know, company and and and I I always considered service now to be kind of part of that you know Silicon Valley Mafia with Frank's Loop. But what's happened is, you know, Sluman did a masterful job of identifying the total available market and executing with demand, and now you know, his successors have picking it beyond there. You know, service now has a market cap that's not quite double, but I mean, I think workday last I checked was in the mid thirties. Service now is market valuation is up in the 60 billion range. I mean, they announced, um uh, just recently, very interestingly, they be expectations. They lowered their guidance relative to consensus guide, but I think the street hose, first of all, they beat their numbers and they've got that SAS model, that very predictable model. And I think people are saying, Look there, just leaving meat on the bone so they can continue to be because that's been their sort of m o these last several years. So you got to like their positioning and you get to talk to customers. They are pricey. You do hear complaints about that, and they've got a strong lock spec. But generally I got my experiences. If people can identify business value and clear productivity, they work through the lock in, you know, they'll just fight it out in the negotiations with procurement. >>That's right, and two things on that. So with service now and and even Salesforce, right, they are a platform like approach type of vendors right where you build on them. And that's what makes them such break companies, right? Even if they have, you know, little nicks and knacks here and there. When they report people see past that right, they understand their best of breed. You build your companies on the service now's and the sales forces of the world. And to the second point, you're exactly right. Businesses want to maintain consistent productivity on, and I think that, you know, is it kind of resonates with the theme, right, doubling down on Cloud and sas. Um, as as you have all this remote work, as you have kind of, you know, questionable are curating marquee a macro environment organizations want to make sure that their employees continue to execute that they're generating consistent productivity. And using these kind of best of breed tools is the way to go. >>It's interesting you mentioned, uh, salesforce and service now for years I've been saying they're on a collision course we haven't seen yet because they're both platforms. I still, uh I'm waiting for that to happen. Let's bring up the next card and let's get into networking way talk. Um Ah. Couple of weeks ago, about the whole shift from traditional Mpls moving to SD win. And this sort of really lays it out. Take us through the data here, please. >>Yeah, no problem. So we're just looking at a handful of vendors here. Really? We're looking at networking vendors that have the highest adoption rates within cloud accounts. And so what we did was we looked inside of aws azure GCC, right. We essentially isolated just those customers. And then we said which networking vendors are seeing the best spend data and the most adoptions within those cloud accounts. And so you get you can kind of see some, uh, some themes here, right? SD lan. Right. You can see Iraqi their VM. Where nsx. You see some next gen load balance saying are they're on the cdn side right then. And so you're seeing a theme here of more next gen players on You're not really seeing a lot of the mpls vendors here, right? They're the ones that have more flattening, decreasing and replacing data. And so the reason just kind of going on this slide is you know, when you kind of think about the networking space as a whole, this is where adoptions are going. This is this is where spends billing and expanded, arise it. And what we just talked about >>your networking such a fascinating space to me because you got you got the leader and Cisco That has helped 2/3 of the market for the longest time, despite competitors like Arista, Juniper and others trying to get in the Air Force and NSX. And the big Neisseria acquisition, you know, kind of potentially disrupted that. But you can see, you know, Cisco, they don't go down without a fight. And ah, there, let's take a look at the next card on Cdn. You know, this is interesting. Uh, you know, you think with all this activity around work from home and remote offices, there's a hot area, But what are we looking at here? >>Yeah, no problem. And that's right, right? You would think. And so we're looking at Cdn players here you would think with the uptake in traffic, you would see fantastic. That scores right for all the cdn vendor. So what you're looking at here and again there's a few lenses on here, so I kind of walk. You kind of walk the audience through here is first we isolated only those individuals that were accelerating their budgets due to work from home. Right. So we've had this conversation now for a few weeks where support employees working from home. You did see a decent number of organizations. I think it was 20 or 30% of organizations at the per server that indicated they're actually accelerate instead. So we're looking at those individuals. And then what we're doing is we're seeing how are how's Cloudflare and aka my performing within those accounts, right? And so we're looking at those specific customers and you could just see within Cloudflare and we practice and security and networking which by more the Cdn piece, How consistent elevated the date is right? This is spend in density, right? Not overall market share is obviously aka my you know, their brand father CD ends. They have the most market share and if you look at optimized to the right. Now you can see the spend velocity is not very good. It's actually negative across boats sector. So you know it's not. We're not saying that. Look, there's a changing of the guard that's occurring right now. We're still relatively small compared talk my But there's just such a start on trust here and again, it kind of goes to what we're talking about. Our macro themes, right? CIOs are continuing to invest in next gen Technologies, and better technologies on that is having an impact on some of these legacy. And, you know, grandfather providers. >>Well, I mean, I think as we enter this again, I've said a number of times. It's ironic overhead coming into a new decade. And you're seeing this throughout the I T. Stack, where you've got a lot of disruptors and you've got companies with large install bases, lot of on Prem or a lot of historical legacy. Yeah, and it's very hard for them to show growth. They often times squeeze R and D because they gotta serve Wall Street. And this is the kind of dilemma they're in, and the only good news with a comma here is there is less bad security go from negative 20% to a negative 8% net score. Um, but wow, what a what a contrast, but to your point, much, much smaller base, but still very relevant. We've seen this movie before. Let's let's wrap with another area that we've talked about. What is virtualization? Desktop virtualization? Beady eye again. A beneficiary of the work from home pivot. Um, And we're focused here, right on Fortune 500 net scores. But give us the low down on this start. >>Yeah, So this is something that look, I think it's it's pretty obvious to into the market you're seeing an uptake and spend across the board versus three months ago in a year ago and spending, etc. Among your desktop virtualization players, there's FBI, right? So that's gonna be your VPN right now. Obviously, they reported pretty good numbers there, so this is an obvious slide, but we wanted to kind of throw it in there. Just say, look, you know, these organizations are seeing nice upticks incent, you know, within the virtualization sectors, specifically within Fortune 500 again, that's kind of, you know, work from home spend that we're seeing here, >>right? So, I mean, this is really a 100% net score in the Fortune 500 for workspaces is pretty amazing. And I think the shared in on this that the end was actually quite large. It wasn't like single digits, Many dozens. I remember when Workspaces first came out, it maybe wasn't ready for prime time. But clearly there's momentum there, and we're seeing this across the board saga. Thanks so much for coming in this week. Really appreciate it. We're gonna be in touch with with you with the TR. You're in Bahrain for Amazon Webster, is this summit our second summit? Um, here. Big news. Amazon Web services announced the availability of the region in the Middle East. I'm here with the chief of Public Sector Theresa Cross and vice President of Worldwide Public Sector. This is a huge milestone. This event one just in terms of the event. The interest across multiple countries in the region. Yes. And you have a new region with multiple availability zones? Yes, up and running. Congratulations. >> Hey, we launched the confetti today and yes, we're open for business and we do. It's a hyper scale region with three available the zones and lots of activity already here in the delays. But it really is a substantial kind of milestone because we started this sometime back in the Middle East, was one of the top regions around the world requested by our partners and customers. And now here we are. >> We've been talking with you for many, many years and I love interviewing you, but this one to me feels like it's not the weight off your shoulders. It's you're at the start line of another marathon. You've achieved so much with this because what's the first thing about Bart Rainey? We've reported on this on Select Angle and our other sites is that you get a lot of work here, is not just turning on a region. There's a lot of government commitment cloud first, full modernization, fintech banking systems, a full re platforming of a government and society and Amazons powering a lot of it and causing a lot of economic growth. So this is a big deal. >> It really is a big deal because, like you said, it really is about digital transformation here. And when I met the crown Prince in 2014 we had this conversation about really creating the economy here in a different way because Bob terrain itself, it's not oil rich country, but a smaller country with lots and lots of tourism. But in this region, while we haven't based here in Bahrain, this is truly a Middle East GCC region and but But part of that, the reason to start it here in my reign was that they really did take a lead in government transformation. As you heard them say, they're going all in shake Some on today talked about government is moving really fast, and they actually did the hard work to think about their telecommunications industry, their government regulations. They started with cloud first, and then they created all the write regulations to make this happen. So it is kind of phenomenal how quickly, in some ways, you know, feel slower than we'd like, But it's really moving quite fast. >> It's pretty fast. You should get a lot of kudos for that. I think you will. But I think to me what's interesting. The news here is that there is a balance between regulation and innovation going on, and regulation can be hampering innovation, some cases and not enough regulation. You have a Facebook situation or >> right so >> it's a balance. These guys have done it right. But to me, the tell sign is the fintech community, >> because that's where >> the money is. The central bank and then the ABC bank are all talking about a pea eye's all in with Amazon that's gonna create an ecosystem for innovation. Startups, et cetera. >> It totally isn't you heard Thean Vivid Jewel from ABC Bank today talk about their platform. What they're doing with clouds and the reason they chose a DBS was because we had this region of Bob Terrain, and they wanted to move quickly in. The regulations now have been updated in a way that actually allows them to do their banking applications in the lab. There's also a startup accelerator here, Fintech May, and they're doing a tenant work with new types of financial applications. So it's so exciting to see this kind of happening than the lace for I think a lot of people thought it would be much slower. We have a ways to go. It's still day one, for sure, but all the building blocks are getting there in the right place to really make this happen. >> You know, 80. Jessie's quoting the announcement you guys had just a couple weeks ago. Laura Angel And in July, the clouds of chance unlocked digital transmission. Middle East, says Andy chassis. Obviously unlocking is a key word because now you have customers from startups to large enterprises and ecosystem of a P M party. So the Ap N Group is here. Yes, So you have global I SUV's here and knew I s V's. You got the government and the education and to me, the news of the show. To me at least maybe it's not the big news, but is that you guys? They're offering a computer like a cloud computing degree. Yeah, for the first time about that news, >> you are right in terms of kind of every sector's picking at, but like in most places around the world, this is not unique. We need skills, and we've got to make sure that we're teaching the skills, working backwards from what the employer needs, like a TVs. So what? We've been here. We announced today we're launching our first cloud computing degree at the university of our terrain, and they're kind of thing. That's really unusual, John. They're going to do a phase one where they offer a cloud certification starting in early 2021 every program at the University of Bahrain, Whether you're in finance or banking, or business or health care or law, you can do this cloud computing certification, which gets you going and helps you understand how you last cloud in your business and then in the fall will be announcing the four year starting, the four year cloud computing degree, and that is in conjunction with our A DBS Educate program. And it will be all the right cloud skills that are needed to be successful. >> Talk about the demographics in this country because one of the things that's coming up is when I talk people in the doorways and it's a chance to talk to some local folks last night that that all in an Amazon, the theme is this. This younger generation yes, is here, and they have different expectations. They all want to work hard. They don't want to just sit back on their laurels and rest on their on their location. Here. They want to build companies they want to change. This is a key factor in the bottle rain modernization. Is that >> Yeah, generation well, all across the Middle East. The thing that's unique about the mill aces, the very young population you had millions of gamers across the Middle East as an example that comic con and Saudi like two years ago on that was one of the most popular things was fortnight. As soon as the region got at all the different gaming started taking place. But we want to create a culture of builders here, and the way you do that is what you said, John putting it into their hands, allowing these young people have the tools create a startup became entrepreneur, but they need to have access to these tools. And sometimes capital is often not that easy to get. So they want to make sure that the capital that they're given or that they have, whether it's bootstrap capital or venture capital, fending or whatever friends and family, they want to make sure that they can use that capital to the greatest advantage to build that company out. And I truly believe that this is gonna help them having an eight of us cloud region. I mean, you saw. Today we have 36 companies that launched their offering in the region on the day we actually announced so that they had specific offerings for the Middle East, which pretty exciting. I mean, that's a lot on day one. >> I mean, it's still day. One of you guys always say, but literally day one they were launching Yeah, I wanted to comment if you could just share some insights. I know, Um, your passion for, you know, entrepreneurship. You guys are also some skill development investing a lot of women in tech power panel this morning, there's major change going on. You guys were providing a lot of incentives, a lot of mentoring, this internships in conjunction with by rain. There's a lot of good things. Share some of the new things that you're working on, maybe deals you're talking about doing or >> way announced Thio kind of new things today. One is we have our we partake program, which I'm, of course, super passionate about. And that is about preventing tech learning and skills to women and underserved in representative communities. So we announced three other training programs here across the Middle East time. So those were put up today and you'll continue to see its role more and more of those out. And the other thing we did yesterday we announced a internship program with the minister of Youth here in Bahrain. That was shaped Nassir, who's a very famous He's that King san, and he's a very famous sportsmen. He does. He just won the Ironman Ironman and 2016. It was the world champion. He does endurance horse racing, so he's a He's a someone that the youth look at to here, and so he's doing all these programs. So we announced a partnership that were the first group doing the internship with this youth program, and so we're very excited. We're going to start that small and scale it, but we want to get these young people quickly and kind of get them excited. But here, what they focus on it is underrepresented communities. So it fits so nicely in with what we're doing with our attack. So you have both Oliver training our over 400 online courses that we offer with a dubious education academy. Now degree now our internship program and we protect. So, John, we're just getting going. I'm not saying that this is all will offer, but these are the things that were getting going with, and we need to make sure we also Taylor things like this Ministry of Youth program and sports at to the region in terms of water, their local needs, and we'll make sure that we're always looking >> at the entrance. Just just get him some great experience. Yes, so they can earn and feel good about themselves. This is kind of a key, exactly thing not just getting an internship, >> and it's, I think, locally it will be about teaching them to do that, disagree and commit really have that backbone to build that company and ask all those hard questions. So we're really going to try to indoctrinate them into the Amazon a TVs culture so we can help them be entrepreneurs like we are every day. >> And you got the data center, you got the city, the centers, you get the regions up and running, and architect, it perfectly suits up with people in it. Are you going to staff that with local talent, or is it gonna be Amazonian is coming in? What's the makeup of staff gonna be? What's the >> story? I mean, our goal is to hire as many local talent. We everywhere we go around the world. We want to get local talent because you can't yet if we did, First of all, we don't have enough people in our headquarters to bring folks in here, so we really have to train and educate. But locally, we have an office open here by rain. We haven't Office Open and Dubai and one down Saudi, and that is local talent. I mean, we are trying to use as much local talent and will continue to create that. And that's kind of the point. Jonas talking about the degree working backwards from what the employer needs. We want to give input because we think we also are getting good. Yeah, so we need to get the top. But we need those other individual employers that keep telling us we need more cloud skills to give that input. But, yeah, >> we're going to get a degree, migrate them into the job >> market, right quick like >> and educates. Been doing great. I learned a lot. This is a whole opportunity for people who want to make money, get a job. Amazon Web service is >> It's a place you could either work for us. It is leaders that make a decision that they wanted a faster and they want to modernize but have the capabilities. No matter if you're the U. S. Department of Defense. Ah, yes. Health and human resource is National Health Service in the UK or RG a hearing by rain, the government's or enterprises that we work with around the world. The key is leadership. And if there's that leader that is really strong and says we're moving, did you actually see organizations move a lot faster if you see people kind of waffle anger. I'm not sure, you know, that's when you can see the slowness. Wow, What I will tell you is from the early days of starting this business in 2010 the individuals that always move fastest for the mission owners because the mission owners of whatever the business West at a governmental level or enterprise, they said, we need to keep our mission going. So that's the reason they wanted to walk through this transformation. >> And now, I think, with developers coming in and started to see these employees for these companies saying, No, no, what's the reason why we can't go fast? That's right now a groundswell of pressure you see in both government, public sector and commercial. >> And you saw Mark Allen today on stage talking about security. It iss literally day. Zero thing for us, and the reason a lot of our customers are meeting faster now is because of security. Cloud is more secure in their meeting to the cloud for security because they feel like they could both optimize, move faster for workloads, and now they have security. Scene here is robust. Last year from this year, More energy, more deployed capital because you're deploying capital. You're building a company. Give us the update start. >> Yeah, I would say over the past year, just our Bahrain location alone. We've already hit 23 startups that we've invested in, and we're looking to increase that number by about 68 start ups every six months. Um, as you've seen over the past year and Amina region and the GCC, there's rapid growth in the startup scene. Um and we're slowly starting to see each vertical fill up with the relevant startups and get more saturated. I think for a while we were one of the regions that were a lot less saturated when it came to our local startup because systems and the rest of the world The good thing is, now that we've gotta love the financial infrastructure into place, flat six Labs is one of them. And I think that's where we really um, we're lacking support before on DSO were signed to feel see players come into every stage of the startup growth be ableto help the stops raise their seed funds. Siri's a Series B >> and your role here is outreach building out my rain. Yet where the Economic Development Board trying to figure out that put together an entrepreneur strategy and not figure it out. We know what it is. You get money? Yeah, yeah. Party together, >> Yes. So what we're trying to do is there's two main things. One is that we're trying Thio finally be the first kind of financial investor that can help people going from a full time job in tow. You know, full time entrepreneurship rolls on to give them access to three of the biggest barriers that they usually will face, which is a business development network mentorship on Capitol andan. Everything that we're doing is weed. So personally, What I take care of is that I go to a lot of the international events around the globe, would start up because systems and try and find very early stage founders and educate them on the market. The region see where people would fit, where the gaps are in the market on dumb kind of raise awareness of old advantages that we have here in Bahrain. >> What makes you guys different? What's the differentiation >> as a country or as flat six labs? Both. So I'd say, as a country behinds in a very unique position where we have, ah, cultural mindset that is very easy for a lot of foreigners and expatriates to adapt to, Um, I think we've even been ranked number one in the world as a place for expect us to live several times on DA number. Thing is that we have a very high skilled workforce. Um, overhead costs are lower. So, for example, when it comes to the cost of rent when it comes to hiring a team, you also have subsidies that come into place like Tom Keen, uh, which Sam has also benefited from where if you go and you hire fresh graduate Bahrainis, you'll get >> ah, >> large margin of that subsidized by the government. So you're looking at, ah, mix where you have a high quality of life. But at the same time, it's the best starting point for a lot of start ups. Because you can extend your runway. You have, ah, much lower cash burn, and at the same time you've got one of the biggest market places right next door, which is Saudi Arabia, is the 30 minute drive across the bridge. So we've kind of got the best of all worlds over here, and and because we're a small country, we have a government that's incredibly reactive. So the regulatory authorities are very close with the startup ecosystem, for example, were always involved in the economic development board round table meetings on the ministries, all working closely together to try and make this as friendly and atmosphere is possible for the startup >> and they're authentic. That's interesting and see government authentically aligning. >> Yeah, it's in the interest of entrepreneur, I would say. One thing we really have going on is it's really an nationwide initiative from the founders to the private entities and investors like us and to the governmental agencies where we all are really dedicated towards making this start up >> san talk about your company. What do you guys do and what's your situation? >> Right? So my company's name is sinking. We're software as a service company that helps businesses manage the really hard aspects of managing their employees like things like timesheets scheduling. Job safety is a big one for us and job costing, and our target market is actually us small businesses and way were early stage company, and we met Salar and Flat six Labs, and they convinced us to come sit up here in Bahrain and never looked back. But the access to talent here is just amazing the cost of very low and were able to do a lot of a very small amount of money. And so far we've got to a total of four and 1/2 1000 U. S. Businesses using the platform. And we've done that all here from Bahrain, >> so very low, low cost leverage, a model, and that's because of the substance of just talent >> as a >> mixer, so it's a little bit cheaper to hire. People have more access to tell him it's a number of things. It's both of those things. >> Yeah, the university programs were interesting there. Got a degree in cloud Computing. They announced that we heard that news today. I mean, that's compelling. I mean, have you want to make the market just teach it? Yeah, exact. This is good, I think. >> I think the good thing is that everyone's come to an understanding that all parties have to get actively involved to make it the right atmosphere. So the universities are also working very closely with us hand in hand. And I've seen Percy a gigantic improvement over the past year where their senior projects of the universities are turning out where they got legitimate startup. It's Dex on Dhe. Some of them are even ready to go straight into acceleration, which was not the case a few years ago. So everybody's really on board. >> That's one of things we met last year in the economic Dillman for that round table. Lotte. I won't say complaints but concerns, and they're very listening to the whiteboards out their charts. How are they doing? Checking the boxes? They are checking the items off, moving these blockers and what's remaining in your mind in terms of things to make it frictionless. >> Yeah, I'd say like there's so far. We've done a great start andan the space of a year. We've accomplished a lot. But of course there's still shifting the whole mentality to understand the startup scene and also, you know, to get people to be less as, ah, cultural mentality, risk averse and start letting people feel that failure is an okay thing. It's okay to go straight out of university and give it a shot and try and start your own startup, Um, and also educating people of all the tools that are available to them. So although we do a lot of outreach and roadshows, still, there's, ah, a lot of people that need to be educated on how exploration works, how the VC side of it works. And I'd say another thing. We need Thio See coming is bridge funds. So we've got people that are ready to come in at Siri's a that precede that seed. But then there's usually these gaps where we need to kind of help Fila's well to keep people on target towards seriously >> like a bullpen. Capital kind of model. Like Paul Martinez Company? Yeah, sass coming that are in between being Air B or B and C just need that little bridge. Yeah, exactly. That. Just >> that extra runway so that they can hit the targets that the later stage investors want us. >> Guys, give it plug for your reference. What you working on? Now? What do you quit your to do? Item? What's, uh what's the plan? Give a pitch for the company. >> Looks way No. The first company to attack time tendons. And we won't be the last. But where we think that we can win his job costing and job tracking, which is something that the customers that we talked to it really screaming out, too. So we've been building a really complex but simple to use system for managing jobs the last 3 to 6 months, and we're about to deploy that to our users in a few weeks. We're very excited about that. And that's really our secret source. We just a lot of guys doing the time in attendance. We're doing it very well, but we want to be the best of jobs. And we also want to stay laser focused throughout our particular users, which is actually employers with 1 to 20 employees in the states. And that's actually that actually makes up 89% of all employers in the States. And it's very hard to historically to find these guys. But we'll be having a smart phone in their pocket. It's actually becoming easier and easier for us, and we find it. >> And those coming need the most help, too, because they're the ones that could grow to 50 employees next. Exactly. So what's the U. I'll see in global fintech Everyone knows what that is, but it's interesting because entrepreneurship and innovation is not just for start ups. It's for countries and hearing by rain, this ecosystem and the mandate to go cloud first has had a ripple effect. We were talking about open banking, mandate, open banking versus regulation, chasing innovation, holding it back. You guys here taking a different approach. Take a minute to explain the philosophy. >> Yeah, I think there's there's benefits to being late adopters to the game. I think in the case of behind it's been a very interesting journey. I think the we started with the whole AWS. But if you look at the prerequisites of technical adoption and creating Data Pool's for analytics to run on, I think the what's interesting about Bahrain is it's really led by regulation. If you look at the prerequisites of creating a digital economy, what's happening in financial service is, or the digitization or openness of financial service. Is it really one context off the bigger picture of Bahrain's digitization plan or the economic strategy? And really, what happens here is if you look at first built the data fools and or the data centers bring a W. A s in and create the data centers. Number two is creator data or cloud First policy. Move the entire government onto the cloud and then give the ownership of the data to the people by implementing the Bahrain personal data protection laws. Once you've done that, then you've given the ownership to the people and you've created what we have is we started with a unique identifies. So the citizens of the country or the residents of the country have a unique identify our number where they're known by once you've done that and then you start mandating certain sectors to open up with a P I integrations. You're creating a very, very interesting value proposition. It creates a much faster you leap frog, a generation of technology. You're going from the classic screen scraping technologies or whatever to a very a completely open infrastructure and open a P I. Where things air cryptographic Lee signed. People are in control of their data, people can control the mobility of their date, and you're really creating a very robust data pool for a lot of algorithms to sit on. >> You know what I love about this has me were talking before he came on cameras that you guys are thinking holistically as a knocking operating system is being in a geek that I am. I love that. But it's not just one thing you're doing, it's a it's a system and it's it's a modernization view. Now we all know that financial systems, power economies and fin tech innovation unit, but you're in. This is important. You gotta have that. That leg of the stool, that pillar that's working absolutely sandbox. You have technology mechanisms to roll in tech, move things quickly moving fast. What's the strategy? What if some of the key things What's the sandbox? >> Let me start by saying The Kingdom of Bahrain has always been considered as a centre of excellence as a financial centre of excellence. And we do realize at the Central Bank in order for us to maintain that position, we have to innovate. We have to remain dynamic and agile enough to make the necessary reforms within our regulations to meet the dynamics off the digital economy. Technology is changing the paradigm off the financial system on the changes happening extremely fast. Regulators have had to come up with a mechanism whereby they can harness and test the feasibility of these innovations whilst putting the risks in a controlled environments as regulators were not typically assigned to host incubators to host startups. However, because of all this change in technology, it has become extremely essential that we come up with a regulatory approach to enable startups as well as existing financial institutions to test out their innovative financial solutions in a controlled environment. So a sandbox is really a controlled live bounds time bounds environment, enabling startups as well as existing financial institutions to test out their innovative solutions under the strict supervision off the regulator, without being required to abide by full regulatory requirements directly with volunteer customers. >> You have to put this trick standards now but means sandboxes. What developers? No, it's a collaborative approach, absolutely not being an incubator. But you're setting up a rules of engagement, Senator startups to take what they know how to do >> exactly >> end up sandboxes in the cloud. That's what everyone does >> absolutely, and our journey with the sandbox has been very successful. We've launched our sandbox back in 2000 and 17. Up to date, we have 35 companies that have been admitted into the sun box. We have been able to graduate to companies successfully. One of them has been licensed as a crypto acid provider, the other as an open biking service provider. We have four other companies in the pipeline ready to graduates. I think all in all, our experience with Sun Box has enabled us to grow and develop his regulators. It has enabled us to maintain open communication with animators, to come tea, to learn the needs of innovators and to enable innovators to live, get familiar realized. With the regulatory environment of the Kingdom of Bahrain, >> you know, you guys are doing some really pioneering work. I wouldn't want to say it's really commendable. I know it's fast and new, but if you look at the United States with Facebook there now asking to be regulated regulation if it comes too late is bad because you know things got out of control and if you're too early, you can put a clamp down and stifle innovation. So the balance between regulation and innovation has always been an art, if you will. >> Exactly. >> What do you guys, How do you view that? What's the philosophy? >> So from a regular perspective, we think that regulation and innovation goes hand in hand, and we have to embrace innovation open heartedly. However, having said that, regulators have to run all common sense checks, meaning that we don't accept an innovation that will potentially pulls more harm to the financial stability of the economy as opposed to the advantages that puzzles. We've passed the number of different regulations to support innovation in the financial services sector dating back to 2014 when we first issued our payment service provider licenses allowing more competition and innovation within the payments sector. We've issued CROWDFUNDING regulations. We've issued robo advisory regulations. We've issued insurance aggregator regulations, crypto asset service provider regulations, open banking regulations, Justin in a few. And I think that each of the regulations that we have issued solves a specific pain point, whether it's to enhance financial inclusion, whether it's to empower customers by retaining ownership back, uh, of their financial information and data, Whether it's too also empower startups and to enable them to get it gain access to funding through digital platforms. >> Have dual. I want to get you in here because as an entrepreneur, like I love all that great, I just wanna get funded. I want my product to market. I need a capital market that's going to be robust. And I need to have that's capital providers state venture capital for private equity supporting their limited partners. So I want to see that I don't wanna be standing there when I need gas for my car. I need fuel. I got to get to the next level. This is what I want And he bought >> on. I think, the one thing John that is very important that people look at in the context of fintech today. Raising money investing into fintech Regulatory uncertainty is one that defines scalability today. Once your technology is proven, where you go next really is dependent on the regulator that you'll be dealing with in the context of that specific activity that you'll be performing. In the case of Bahrain, I must say we were blown away by the receptiveness. We in what way? Yes, yes, mean mentioned open banking, for example. We got into the regulatory sandbox, which you hear a lot about sandboxes all around the world. We got into the sandbox. We got into the sandbox with contact with with with an idea of building and accounts aggregator direct FBI integration to these banks. And we got into the sandbox. We There were no regulations at the time. They like the idea. We started bouncing ideas back and forth on how to develop it. We developed the technology. We started piloting the technology. We integrated to 15 banks in the country on a sandbox environment. The consul, the white paper on open banking, was listed. They sent it out for consultation. We integrated on a production environment to more than 70% of the banks in it in the country. The central Bank of Bahrain mandated open banking across the entire nation. With every retail bank all in a period of less than 18 months. That's insane. That's the kind of context. So as a no Vester exactly so as an investor or as an entrepreneur that looks at the sector. The question is here. If anything, I think the regulator in Bahrain is the one that's leading the innovation and these air the benefits of being late adopters. We get to test out and see what's going on in the rest of the world and really develop great regulations that will embrace and and foster innovation. >> You know, I love the liquidity conversation because this neck goes to the next level. Liquidity is a wonderful thing started. Wanna go public? If that's what happens in the U. S. Mergers and acquisitions, we have an incubator that we're gonna interview here flat Six labs just had to come. One of their companies got sold to match dot com. So you're seeing a lot of cross border liquidity. Yeah, this is a new dynamic. It's only gonna get stronger, more come. He's gonna come out of my reign in the region. Liquid is important. Absent. So how do you guys want to foster that? What's the strategy? Continue to do the same. >> So from a regular perspective again, we don't really holds. Thank you. Beaters are actually two accelerators, but what we do as we refined our regulations to support startups to gain access to liquidity, for example, are crowdfunding regulations that have been passed in 2017 and they support both. Equity is one of financing crowdfunding, including conventional as well as Sharia compliant. Crowdfunding transactions were also currently working on refining our regulations for enabling venture capitalists to take roots and marine and to support these startups. >> Yeah, I think John, you mentioned two things you mentioned regulation leading. When you mandate something like open banking, you are ultimately pushing the entire sector forward, saying you better innovators fastest possible. And there's a gap that you need to you need to basically bridge, and that really loosens up a lot of liquidity when it comes to partnerships. When it comes to acquisitions, when it comes to these banks ultimately looking for better solutions, so they that's the role of the regulator. Here we are seeing a lot of VC activity come to the region right now, the region is only starting to open up. AWS just went live a few months ago. We're seeing the cloud adoption start to really take effect, and this is where you'll start seeing real scalability. But I think the most compelling thing here is Previously people would look at the Middle East with a boot with a bit of skepticism. How much innovation can really take place and the reality is here. There are a few prerequisites that have been put in place. Foreign ownership is at 100% cloud. First policy. There's a lot of things that can really foster innovation. And we're, I mean, where as an entrepreneur, where living proof off this whole Team Bahrain initiative of the fact that you can get in you can build in accounts aggregator in a country that never even had the regulations to adopted to mandate it and to be Ultimately, I think Bahrain will become the global reference point for open banking very soon because it has mandated a regulation of open AP eyes with cryptographic signatures ultimate security frameworks with a robust infrastructure across an entire nation. And don't forget, we still have a population of below the age of 30 70% of our population below. So it gives a very compelling story t test your technology. And then what we end up saying is, once you're on AWS or any cloud for that matter than the scalability of the technology just depends on where you want to go in there. >> No doubt the demographics are solid here, and I love the announcement here. The bachelor's degree. Yeah, cloud computing. We've seen some data science degrees, so new skills are coming on. My vision is interesting. I think that would interest me about the region of Amazon. Being here is these regions create revitalisation? >> Yeah, you >> guys are in perfect position with this Modernization trend is beautiful, not only to be a template for the world but a center for global banking. So I think to me, is that, you know is I'm trying to put together and connect the dots of where this goes in the next two decades. I mean, if crypto currency market continues to get matured and stabilized, that's still flowing with a lot of money. A lot of money in the relay >> absolutely >> was not just the region business to do here for couples to come here. It's you guys playing a role in global financial system. That's of interest to me. What's your vision? >> Absolutely. I think that regulators around the world are starting to realize the importance of collaborating together, to try and work on policy challenges in line with innovation within the financial service of sector and to share experiences to share lessons learned at the Central Bank of Bahrain were a member of the Global Financial Innovation Network, which is an initiative that has Bean passed by the F C A in the UK Again, we're also a member of the authentic working group of the GCC and through these two different initiatives, we work alongside other regulators to collaborate on solving policy issues, to solve, to share experiences and knowledge and to try and harmonize our regulations. Because of the end of the day, startups and innovators ultimately will want to scale up and want to serve customers across the friend jurisdictions. So it's important to have that kind of harmonization in terms of regulations to foster innovation as well as to safeguard the overall security of the international financial. Um, >> keep partnerships. Do you guys need to do to kind of go global on this 20 year vision? Is there other things they have to fall into place? That needs to happen? >> I think >> 20 years is a long time, I say in the next. Let's take five years, for example. If you say in the next five years and where I see this going, the question is, what do entrepreneurs and startups need to look at a jurisdiction and say That's where I want to test my technology. You need a robust infrastructure. You need a regulator than embraces you. You need technical subsidies and financial subsidies that are available, and then you need an independent arm that can really hand hold you and take you to that >> thrust. Its critical trust, money making absolutely ability. >> Just add to that and Byron, we take great pride in our human capital, which we believe is one of our biggest assets. And today, with having your Amazon web service is in Bahrain, this has enabled training of young Bahrainis for the data and knowledge economies which is expected Thio greet around 5000 jobs within becoming five years through different schemes such as Amazon education. Keynote | Red Hat Summit 2019 | DAY 2 Morning


 

>> Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Red Hat President Products and Technologies. Paul Cormier. Boring. >> Welcome back to Boston. Welcome back. And welcome back after a great night last night of our opening with with Jim and talking to certainly saw ten Jenny and and especially our customers. It was so great last night to hear our customers in how they set their their goals and how they met their goals. All possible because certainly with a little help from red hat, but all possible because of because of open source. And, you know, sometimes we have to all due that has set goals. And I'm going to talk this morning about what we as a company and with community, have set for our goals along the way. And sometimes you have to do that. You know, audacious goals. It can really change the perception of what's even possible. And, you know, if I look back, I can't think of anything, at least in my lifetime, that's more important. Or such a big golden John F. Kennedy setting the gold to the American people to go to the moon. I believe it or not, I was really, really only three years old when he said that, honestly. But as I grew up, I remember the passion around the whole country and the energy to make that goal a reality. So let's sort of talk about in compare and contrast, a little bit of where we are technically at that time, you know, tto win and to beat and winning the space race and even get into the space race. There was some really big technical challenges along the way. I mean, believe it or not. Not that long ago. But even But back then, math Malik mathematical calculations were being shifted from from brilliant people who we trusted, and you could look in the eye to A to a computer that was programmed with the results that were mostly printed out. This this is a time where the potential of computers was just really coming on the scene and, at the time, the space race at the time of space race it. It revolved around an IBM seventy ninety, which was one of the first transistor based computers. It could perform mathematical calculations faster than even the most brilliant mathematicians. But just like today, this also came with many, many challenges And while we had the goal of in the beginning of the technique and the technology to accomplish it, we needed people so dedicated to that goal that they would risk everything. And while it may seem commonplace to us today to trust, put our trust in machines, that wasn't the case. Back in nineteen sixty nine, the seven individuals that made up the Mercury Space crew were putting their their lives in the hands of those first computers. But on Sunday, July twentieth, nineteen sixty nine, these things all came together. The goal, the technology in the team and a human being walked on the moon. You know, if this was possible fifty years ago, just think about what Khun B. Accomplished today, where technology is part of our everyday lives. And with technology advances at an ever increasing rate, it's hard to comprehend the potential that sitting right at our fingertips every single day, everything you know about computing is continuing to change. Today, let's look a bit it back. A computing In nineteen sixty nine, the IBM seventy ninety could process one hundred thousand floating point operations per second, today's Xbox one that sitting in most of your living rooms probably can process six trillion flops. That's sixty million times more powerful than the original seventy ninety that helped put a human being on the moon. And at the same time that computing was, that was drastically changed. That this computing has drastically changed. So have the boundaries of where that computing sits and where it's been where it lives. At the time of the Apollo launch, the computing power was often a single machine. Then it moved to a single data center, and over time that grew to multiple data centers. Then with cloud, it extended all the way out to data centers that you didn't even own or have control of. But but computing now reaches far beyond any data center. This is also referred to as the edge. You hear a lot about that. The Apollo's, the Apollo's version of the Edge was the guidance system, a two megahertz computer that weighed seventy pounds embedded in the capsule. Today, today the edge is right here on my wrist. This apple watch weighs just a couple of ounces, and it's ten ten thousand times more powerful than that seventy ninety back in nineteen sixty nine But even more impactful than computing advances, combined with the pervasive availability of it, are the changes and who in what controls those that similar to social changes that have happened along the way. Shifting from mathematicians to computers, we're now facing the same type of changes with regards to operational control of our computing power. In its first forms. Operational control was your team, your team within your control? In some cases, a single person managed everything. But as complexity grows, our team's expanded, just like in the just like in the computing boundaries, system integrators and public cloud providers have become an extension of our team. But at the end of the day, it's still people that are still making all the decisions going forward with the progress of things like a I and software defined everything. It's quite likely that machines will be managing machines, and in many cases that's already happening today. But while the technology at our finger tips today is so impressive, the pace of changing complexity of the problems we aspire to solve our equally hard to comprehend and they are all intertwined with one another learning from each other, growing together faster and faster. We are tackling problems today on a global scale with unsinkable complexity beyond anyone beyond what any one single company or even one single country Khun solve alone. This is why open source is so important. This is why open source is so needed today in software. This is why open sources so needed today, even in the world, to solve other types of complex problems. And this is why open source has become the dominant development model which is driving the technology direction. Today is to bring two brother to bring together the best innovation from every corner of the planet. Toe fundamentally change how we solve problems. This approach and access the innovation is what has enabled open source To tackle The challenge is big challenges, like creating the hybrid cloud like building a truly open hybrid cloud. But even today it's really difficult to bridge the gap of the innovation. It's available in all in all of our fingertips by open source development, while providing the production level capabilities that are needed to really dip, ploy this in the enterprise and solve RIA world business problems. Red Hat has been committed to open source from the very, very beginning and bringing it to solve enterprise class problems for the last seventeen plus years. But when we built that model to bring open source to the enterprise, we absolutely knew we couldn't do it halfway tow harness the innovation. We had to fully embrace the model. We made a decision very early on. Give everything back and we live by that every single day. We didn't do crazy crazy things like you hear so many do out there. All this is open corps or everything below. The line is open and everything above the line is closed. We didn't do that, and we gave everything back Everything we learned in the process of becoming an enterprise class technology company. We gave it all of that back to the community to make better and better software. This is how it works. And we've seen the results of that. We've all seen the results of that and it could only have been possible within open source development model we've been building on the foundation of open source is most successful Project Lennox in the architecture of the future hybrid and bringing them to the Enterprise. This is what made Red Hat, the company that we are today and red hats journey. But we also had the set goals, and and many of them seemed insert insurmountable at the time, the first of which was making Lennox the Enterprise standard. And while this is so accepted today, let's take a look at what it took to get there. Our first launch into the Enterprise was rail two dot one. Yes, I know we two dot one, but we knew we couldn't release a one dato product. We knew that and and we didn't. But >> we didn't want to >> allow any reason why anyone of any customer anyone shouldn't should look past rail to solve their problems as an option. Back then, we had to fight every single flavor of Unix in every single account. But we were lucky to have a few initial partners and Big Eyes v partners that supported Rehl out of the gate. But while we had the determination, we knew we also had gaps in order to deliver on our on our priorities. In the early days of rail, I remember going to ask one of our engineers for a past rehl build because we were having a customer issue on it on an older release. And then I watched in horror as he rifled through his desk through a mess of CDs and magically came up and said, I found it here It is told me not to worry that the build this was he thinks this was the bill. This was the right one, and at that point I knew that despite the promise of Lennox, we had a lot of work ahead of us. The not only convinced the world that Lennox was secure, stable, an enterprise ready, but also to make that a reality. But we did. And today this is our reality. It's all of our reality. From the Enterprise Data Center standard to the fastest computers on the planet, Red Hat Enterprise, Lennox has continually risen to the challenge and has become the core foundation that many mission critical customers run and bet their business on. And an even bigger today Lennox is the foundation of which practically every single technology initiative is built upon. Lennox is not only standard toe build on today, it's the standard for innovation that builds around it. That's the innovation that's driving the future as well. We started our story with rail two dot one, and here we are today, seventeen years later, announcing rally as we did as we did last night. It's specifically designed for applications to run across the open hybrid. Clyde Cloud. Railed has become the best operating simp system for on premise all the way out to the cloud, providing that common operating model and workload foundation on which to build hybrid applications. Let's take it. So what about if I have to add a whole new application to this environment? >> Good that you're bringing that up. We build a new future into hell called application streams. Which the way for you to install different versions of your half stack that are supported I'LL show you with Youngmin a command line. But since Windows doesn't have a proper terminal, I'll just do it in the terminal that we built into the Web console Since the browser, I can even make this a bit bigger. I loved using know js and Java. So what about multiple versions of those? >> Yeah, that's exactly the idea way. Want to keep up with the fast moving ecosystems off programming language? So, Josh, how would I create a golden image? One VM image that can use and we have everything pre baked in? >> Yeah, absolutely. But >> we get that question all the time. So really includes image builder technology. Image builder technology is actually all of our hybrid cloud operating system image tools that we use to build our own images and rolled up in a nice, easy to integrate new system. So if I come here in the web console and I go to our image builder tab, it brings us to blueprints, right? Blueprints or what we used to actually control it goes into our golden image. Uh, and I heard you and Lars talking about post present python. So I went and started typing here. So it brings us to this page, but you could go to the selected components, and you can see here I've created a blueprint that has all the python and post press packages in it. Ah, and the interesting thing about this is it build on our existing kickstart technology. But you can use it to deploy that whatever cloud you want. And it's saved so that you don't actually have to know all the various incantations from Amazon toe azure to Google, whatever it's all baked in on. When you do this, you can actually see the dependencies that get brought in as well. Okay. Should we create one life? Yes, please. All right, cool. So if we go back to the blueprints page and we click create blueprint Let's, uh let's make a developer brute blueprint here. So we click great, and you can see here on the left hand side. I've got all of my content served up by Red Hat satellite. We have a lot of great stuff, and really, But we can go ahead and search. On even more of our pre bill image is up and running an azure with the web console there. So the really cool thing about this bird is that all of these images were built with image builder in a single location, controlling all the content that you want in your golden images deployed across the hybrid cloud. >> Wow, that is fantastic. As a matter of fact, several you folks right now in this audience to have to manage hundreds, if not thousands, of virtual machines I recently spoke to. Gentleman has to manage thirteen hundred servers. So how do you manage those machines? A great scale. So great that they have now joined us is that it looks like they worked things out. So now I'm curious, Tim. How will we manage hundreds, if not thousands, of computers? >> Welbourne, one human managing hundreds or even thousands of'em says, No problem, because we have Ansel automation. And by leveraging Ansel's integration into satellite, not only can we spin up those V em's really quickly, like Josh was just doing, but we can also make ongoing maintenance of them really simple. Weaken with that danceable integration easily apply those patches across our entire fleet of machines. Okay, >> that is fantastic. What is that? >> So, actually, one of the key design principles of relate is working with our customers over the last twenty years to integrate all the knowledge that we've gained and turn that into insights that we can use to keep our red hat Enterprise Lennox servers running securely, inefficiently. And so what we actually have here is a few things that we could take a look at show folks what that is. >> OK, so we basically have this new feature. We're going to show people right now. And so one thing I want to make sure it's absolutely included within the redhead enterprise in that state. >> Yes. Oh, that's Ah, that's an announcement that we're making this week is that this is a brand new feature that's integrated with Red Hat Enterprise clinics, and it's available to everybody that has a red hat enterprise like subscription. So >> I believe everyone in this room right now has a rail subscriptions, so it's available to all of them. >> Absolutely, absolutely. So let's take a quick look and try this out. So we actually have. Here is a list of about six hundred rules. They're configuration security and performance rules. And this is this list is growing every single day, so customers can actually opt in to the rules that are most that are most applicable to their enterprises. So what we're actually doing here is combining the experience and knowledge that we have with the data that our customers opt into sending us. So customers have opted in and are sending us more data every single night. Then they actually have in total over the last twenty years via any other mechanism. >> Now there's I see now there's some critical findings. That's what I was talking about. But it comes to CVS and things that nature. >> Yeah, I'm betting that those air probably some of the rail seven boxes that we haven't actually upgraded quite yet. So we get back to that. What? I'd really like to show everybody here because everybody has access to this is how easy it is to opt in and enable this feature for real. Okay, let's do that real quick, so I gotta hop back over to satellite here. This is the satellite that we saw before, and I'll grab one of the hosts and we can use the new Web console feature that's part of Railly, and via single sign on I could jump right from satellite over to the Web console. So it's really, really easy. And I'LL grab a terminal here and registering with insights is really, really easy. Is one command troops, and what's happening right now is the box is going to gather some data. It's going to send it up to the cloud, and within just a minute or two, we're gonna have some results that we can look at back on the Web interface. >> I love it so it's just a single command and you're ready to register this box right now. That is super easy. Well, that's fantastic, >> Brent. We started this whole series of demonstrations by telling the audience that Red Hat Enterprise Lennox eight was the easiest, most economical and smartest operating system on the planet, period. And well, I think it's cute how you can go ahead and captain on a single machine. I'm going to show you one more thing. This is Answerable Tower. You can use as a bell tower to managing govern your answerable playbook, usage across your entire organization and with this. What I could do is on every single VM that was spun up here today. Opt in and register insights with a single click of a button. >> Okay, I want to see that right now. I know everyone's waiting for it as well, But hey, you're VM is ready. Josh. Lars? >> Yeah. Uh, let's go back and take a look at some of those critical issues affecting a few of our systems here. So you can see this is a particular deanna's mask issue. It's going to affect a couple of machines. We saw that in the overview, and I can actually go and get some more details about what this particular issue is. So if you take a look at the right side of the screen there, there's actually a critical likelihood an impact that's associated with this particular issue. And what that really translates to is that there's a high level of risk to our organization from this particular issue. But also there's a low risk of change. And so what that means is that it's really, really safe for us to go ahead and use answerable to mediate this so I can grab the machines will select those two and we're mediate with answerable. I can create a new playbook. It's our maintenance window, but we'LL do something along the lines of like stuff Tim broke and that'LL be our cause. We name it whatever we want. So we'Ll create that playbook and take a look at it, and it's actually going to give us some details about the machines. You know what, what type of reboots Efendi you're going to be needed and what we need here. So we'LL go ahead and execute the playbook and what you're going to see is the outputs goingto happen in real time. So this is happening from the cloud were affecting machines. No matter where they are, they could be on Prem. They could be in a hybrid cloud, a public cloud or in a private cloud. And these things are gonna be remediated very, very easily with answerable. So it's really, really awesome. Everybody here with a red hat. We hear about that all the time, as I just told you a few minutes ago, Lennox isn't just the foundation for enterprise and cloud computing. It's also the foundation for the fastest super computers in the world. In our next guest is here to tell us a lot more about that. >> Please welcome Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. HPC solution Architect Robin Goldstone. >> Thank you so much, Robin. >> So welcome. Welcome to the summit. Welcome to Boston. And thank thank you so much for coming for joining us. Can you tell us a bit about the goals of Lawrence Livermore National Lab and how high high performance computing really works at this level? >> Sure. So Lawrence Livermore National >> Lab was established during the Cold War to address urgent national security needs by advancing the state of nuclear weapons, science and technology and high performance computing has always been one of our core capabilities. In fact, our very first supercomputer, ah Univac one was ordered by Edward Teller before our lab even opened back in nineteen fifty two. Our mission has evolved since then to cover a broad range of national security challenges. But first and foremost, our job is to ensure the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. Oh, since the US no longer performs underground nuclear testing, our ability to certify the stockpile depends heavily on science based science space methods. We rely on H P C to simulate the behavior of complex weapons systems to ensure that they can function as expected, well beyond their intended life spans. That's actually great. >> So are you really are still running on that on that Univac? >> No, Actually, we we've moved on since then. So Sierra is Lawrence Livermore. Its latest and greatest supercomputer is currently the Seconds spastic supercomputer in the world and for the geeks in the audience, I think there's a few of them out there. We put up some of the specs of Syrah on the screen behind me, a couple of things worth highlighting our Sierra's peak performance and its power utilisation. So one hundred twenty five Pata flops of performance is equivalent to about twenty thousand of those Xbox one excess that you mentioned earlier and eleven point six megawatts of power required Operate Sierra is enough to power around eleven thousand homes. Syria is a very large and complex system, but underneath it all, it starts out as a collection of servers running Lin IX and more specifically, rail. >> So did Lawrence. Did Lawrence Livermore National Lab National Lab used Yisrael before >> Sierra? Oh, yeah, most definitely. So we've been running rail for a very long time on what I'll call our mid range HPC systems. So these clusters, built from commodity components, are sort of the bread and butter of our computer center. And running rail on these systems provides us with a continuity of operations and a common user environment across multiple generations of hardware. Also between Lawrence Livermore in our sister labs, Los Alamos and Sandia. Alongside these commodity clusters, though, we've always had one sort of world class supercomputer like Sierra. Historically, these systems have been built for a sort of exotic proprietary hardware running entirely closed source operating systems. Anytime something broke, which was often the Vander would be on the hook to fix it. And you know, >> that sounds >> like a good model, except that what we found overtime is most the issues that we have on these systems were either due to the extreme scale or the complexity of our workloads. Vendors seldom had a system anywhere near the size of ours, and we couldn't give them our classified codes. So their ability to reproduce our problem was was pretty limited. In some cases, they've even sent an engineer on site to try to reproduce our problems. But even then, sometimes we wouldn't get a fix for months or else they would just tell us they weren't going to fix the problem because we were the only ones having it. >> So for many of us, for many of us, the challenges is one of driving reasons for open source, you know, for even open source existing. How has how did Sierra change? Things are on open source for >> you. Sure. So when we developed our technical requirements for Sierra, we had an explicit requirement that we want to run an open source operating system and a strong preference for rail. At the time, IBM was working with red hat toe add support Terrell for their new little Indian power architecture. So it was really just natural for them to bid a red. A rail bay system for Sierra running Raylan Cyril allows us to leverage the model that's worked so well for us for all this time on our commodity clusters any packages that we build for X eighty six, we can now build those packages for power as well as our market texture using our internal build infrastructure. And while we have a formal support relationship with IBM, we can also tap our in house colonel developers to help debug complex problems are sys. Admin is Khun now work on any of our systems, including Sierra, without having toe pull out their cheat sheet of obscure proprietary commands. Our users get a consistent software environment across all our systems. And if the security vulnerability comes out, we don't have to chase around getting fixes from Multan slo es fenders. >> You know, you've been able, you've been able to extend your foundation from all the way from X eighty six all all the way to the extract excess Excuse scale supercomputing. We talk about giving customers all we talked about it all the time. A standard operational foundation to build upon. This isn't This isn't exactly what we've envisioned. So So what's next for you >> guys? Right. So what's next? So Sierra's just now going into production. But even so, we're already working on the contract for our next supercomputer called El Capitan. That's scheduled to be delivered the Lawrence Livermore in the twenty twenty two twenty timeframe. El Capitan is expected to be about ten times the performance of Sierra. I can't share any more details about that system right now, but we are hoping that we're going to be able to continue to build on a solid foundation. That relish provided us for well over a decade. >> Well, thank you so much for your support of realm over the years, Robin. And And thank you so much for coming and tell us about it today. And we can't wait to hear more about El Capitan. Thank you. Thank you very much. So now you know why we're so proud of realm. And while you saw confetti cannons and T shirt cannons last night, um, so you know, as as burned the team talked about the demo rail is the force multiplier for servers. We've made Lennox one of the most powerful platforms in the history of platforms. But just as Lennox has become a viable platform with access for everyone, and rail has become viable, more viable every day in the enterprise open source projects began to flourish around the operating system. And we needed to bring those projects to our enterprise customers in the form of products with the same trust models as we did with Ralph seeing the incredible progress of software development occurring around Lennox. Let's let's lead us to the next goal that we said tow, tow ourselves. That goal was to make hybrid cloud the default enterprise for the architecture. How many? How many of you out here in the audience or are Cesar are? HC sees how many out there a lot. A lot. You are the people that our building the next generation of computing the hybrid cloud, you know, again with like just like our goals around Lennox. This goals might seem a little daunting in the beginning, but as a community we've proved it time and time again. We are unstoppable. Let's talk a bit about what got us to the point we're at right right now and in the work that, as always, we still have in front of us. We've been on a decade long mission on this. Believe it or not, this mission was to build the capabilities needed around the Lenox operating system to really build and make the hybrid cloud. When we saw well, first taking hold in the enterprise, we knew that was just taking the first step. Because for a platform to really succeed, you need applications running on it. And to get those applications on your platform, you have to enable developers with the tools and run times for them to build, to build upon. Over the years, we've closed a few, if not a lot of those gaps, starting with the acquisition of J. Boss many years ago, all the way to the new Cuban Eddie's native code ready workspaces we launched just a few months back. We realized very early on that building a developer friendly platform was critical to the success of Lennox and open source in the enterprise. Shortly after this, the public cloud stormed onto the scene while our first focus as a company was done on premise in customer data centers, the public cloud was really beginning to take hold. Rehl very quickly became the standard across public clouds, just as it was in the enterprise, giving customers that common operating platform to build their applications upon ensuring that those applications could move between locations without ever having to change their code or operating model. With this new model of the data center spread across so many multiple environments, management had to be completely re sought and re architected. And given the fact that environments spanned multiple locations, management, real solid management became even more important. Customers deploying in hybrid architectures had to understand where their applications were running in how they were running, regardless of which infrastructure provider they they were running on. We invested over the years with management right alongside the platform, from satellite in the early days to cloud forms to cloud forms, insights and now answerable. We focused on having management to support the platform wherever it lives. Next came data, which is very tightly linked toe applications. Enterprise class applications tend to create tons of data and to have a common operating platform foyer applications. You need a storage solutions. That's Justus, flexible as that platform able to run on premise. Just a CZ. Well, as in the cloud, even across multiple clouds. This let us tow acquisitions like bluster, SEF perma bitch in Nubia, complimenting our Pratt platform with red hat storage for us, even though this sounds very condensed, this was a decade's worth of investment, all in preparation for building the hybrid cloud. Expanding the portfolio to cover the areas that a customer would depend on to deploy riel hybrid cloud architectures, finding any finding an amplifying the right open source project and technologies, or filling the gaps with some of these acquisitions. When that necessarily wasn't available by twenty fourteen, our foundation had expanded, but one big challenge remained workload portability. Virtual machine formats were fragmented across the various deployments and higher level framework such as Java e still very much depended on a significant amount of operating system configuration and then containers happened containers, despite having a very long being in existence for a very long time. As a technology exploded on the scene in twenty fourteen, Cooper Netease followed shortly after in twenty fifteen, allowing containers to span multiple locations and in one fell swoop containers became the killer technology to really enable the hybrid cloud. And here we are. Hybrid is really the on ly practical reality in way for customers and a red hat. We've been investing in all aspects of this over the last eight plus years to make our customers and partners successful in this model. We've worked with you both our customers and our partners building critical realm in open shift deployments. We've been constantly learning about what has caused problems and what has worked well in many cases. And while we've and while we've amassed a pretty big amount of expertise to solve most any challenge in in any area that stack, it takes more than just our own learning's to build the next generation platform. Today we're also introducing open shit for which is the culmination of those learnings. This is the next generation of the application platform. This is truly a platform that has been built with our customers and not simply just with our customers in mind. This is something that could only be possible in an open source development model and just like relish the force multiplier for servers. Open shift is the force multiplier for data centers across the hybrid cloud, allowing customers to build thousands of containers and operate them its scale. And we've also announced open shift, and we've also announced azure open shift. Last night. Satya on this stage talked about that in depth. This is all about extending our goals of a common operating platform enabling applications across the hybrid cloud, regardless of whether you run it yourself or just consume it as a service. And with this flagship release, we are also introducing operators, which is the central, which is the central feature here. We talked about this work last year with the operator framework, and today we're not going to just show you today. We're not going to just show you open shift for we're going to show you operators running at scale operators that will do updates and patches for you, letting you focus more of your time and running your infrastructure and running running your business. We want to make all this easier and intuitive. So let's have a quick look at how we're doing. Just that >> painting. I know all of you have heard we're talking to pretend to new >> customers about the travel out. So new plan. Just open it up as a service been launched by this summer. This is where you see open shift four on how you can manage large clusters of applications from eggs limits containers across the hybrid cloud. We're going to see this is where suffer operators fundamentally empower human operators and especially make ups and Deb work efficiently, more efficiently and effectively there together than ever before. In large part, that's because open shit for has extended management of the clusters down to the infrastructure, the diversity kinds of parent. When you take >> a look at the open ship console, >> you can now see the machines that make up the cluster where machine represents the infrastructure. Underneath that Cooper, Eddie's node open shit for now handles provisioning Andy provisioning of those machines. From there, you could dig into it open ship node and see how it's configured and monitor how it's behaving. So >> I'm curious, >> though it does this work on bare metal infrastructure as well as virtualized infrastructure. >> Yeah, that's right. Burn So Pa Journal nodes, no eternal machines and open shit for can now manage it all. Something else we found extremely useful about open ship for is that it now has the ability to update itself. We can see this cluster hasn't update available and at the press of a button. Upgrades are responsible for updating. The entire platform includes the nodes, the control plane and even the operating system and real core arrests. All of this is possible because the infrastructure components and their configuration is now controlled by technology called operators. Thes software operators are responsible for aligning the cluster to a desired state. And all of this makes operational management of unopened ship cluster much simpler than ever before. All right, I >> love the fact that all that's been on one console Now you can see the full stack right all way down to the bare metal right there in that one console. Fantastic. So I wanted to scare us for a moment, though. And now let's talk to Deva, right? So Jessica here represents our all our developers in the room as my facts. He manages a large team of developers here Red hat. But more importantly, she represents our vice president development and has a large team that she has to worry about on a regular basis of Jessica. What can you show us? We'LL burn My team has hundreds of developers and were constantly under pressure to deliver value to our business. And frankly, we can't really wait for Dan and his ops team to provisioned the infrastructure and the services that we need to do our job. So we've chosen open shift as our platform to run our applications on. But until recently, we really struggled to find a reliable source of Cooper Netease Technologies that have the operational characteristics that Dan's going to actually let us install through the cluster. But now, with operator, How bio, we're really seeing the V ecosystem be unlocked. And the technology's there. Things that my team needs, its databases and message cues tracing and monitoring. And these operators are actually responsible for complex applications like Prometheus here. Okay, they're written in a variety of languages, danceable, but that is awesome. So I do see a number of options there already, and preaches is a great example. But >> how do you >> know that one? These operators really is mature enough and robust enough for Dan and the outside of the house. Wilbert, Here we have the operator maturity model, and this is going to tell me and my team whether this particular operator is going to do a basic install if it's going to upgrade that application over time through different versions or all the way out to full auto pilot, where it's automatically scaling and tuning the application based on the current environment. And it's very cool. So coming over toothy open shift Consul, now we can actually see Dan has made the sequel server operator available to me and my team. That's the database that we're using. A sequel server. That's a great example. So cynics over running here in the cluster? But this is a great example for a developer. What if I want to create a new secret server instance? Sure, we're so it's as easy as provisioning any other service from the developer catalog. We come in and I can type for sequel server on what this is actually creating is, ah, native resource called Sequel Server, and you can think of that like a promise that a sequel server will get created. The operator is going to see that resource, install the application and then manage it over its life cycle, KAL, and from this install it operators view, I can see the operators running in my project and which resource is its managing Okay, but I'm >> kind of missing >> something here. I see this custom resource here, the sequel server. But where the community's resource is like pods. Yeah, I think it's cool that we get this native resource now called Sequel Server. But if I need to, I can still come in and see the native communities. Resource is like your staple set in service here. Okay, that is fantastic. Now, we did say earlier on, though, like many of our customers in the audience right now, you have a large team of engineers. Lost a large team of developers you gotta handle. You gotta have more than one secret server, right? We do one for every team as we're developing, and we use a lot of other technologies running on open shift as well, including Tomcat and our Jenkins pipelines and our dough js app that is gonna actually talk to that sequel server database. Okay, so this point we can kind of provisions, Some of these? Yes. Oh, since all of this is self service for me and my team's, I'm actually gonna go and create one of all of those things I just said on all of our projects, right Now, if you just give me a minute, Okay? Well, right. So basically, you're going to knock down No Jazz Jenkins sequel server. All right, now, that's like hundreds of bits of application level infrastructure right now. Live. So, Dan, are you not terrified? Well, I >> guess I should have done a little bit better >> job of managing guests this quota and historically just can. I might have had some conflict here because creating all these new applications would admit my team now had a massive back like tickets to work on. But now, because of software operators, my human operators were able to run our infrastructure at scale. So since I'm long into the cluster here as the cluster admin, I get this view of pods across all projects. And so I get an idea of what's happening across the entire cluster. And so I could see now we have four hundred ninety four pods already running, and there's a few more still starting up. And if I scroll to the list, we can see the different workloads Jessica just mentioned of Tomcats. And no Gs is And Jenkins is and and Siegel servers down here too, you know, I see continues >> creating and you have, like, close to five hundred pods running >> there. So, yeah, filters list down by secret server, so we could just see. Okay, But >> aren't you not >> running going around a cluster capacity at some point? >> Actually, yeah, we we definitely have a limited capacity in this cluster. And so, luckily, though, we already set up auto scale er's And so because the additional workload was launching, we see now those outer scholars have kicked in and some new machines are being created that don't yet have noticed. I'm because they're still starting up. And so there's another good view of this as well, so you can see machine sets. We have one machine set per availability zone, and you could see the each one is now scaling from ten to twelve machines. And the way they all those killers working is for each availability zone, they will. If capacities needed, they will add additional machines to that availability zone and then later effect fast. He's no longer needed. It will automatically take those machines away. >> That is incredible. So right now we're auto scaling across multiple available zones based on load. Okay, so looks like capacity planning and automation is fully, you know, handle this point. But I >> do have >> another question for year logged in. Is the cluster admin right now into the console? Can you show us your view of >> operator suffer operators? Actually, there's a couple of unique views here for operators, for Cluster admits. The first of those is operator Hub. This is where a cluster admin gets the ability to curate the experience of what operators are available to users of the cluster. And so obviously we already have the secret server operator installed, which which we've been using. The other unique view is operator management. This gives a cluster I've been the ability to maintain the operators they've already installed. And so if we dig in and see the secret server operator, well, see, we haven't set up for manual approval. And what that means is if a new update comes in for a single server, then a cluster and we would have the ability to approve or disapprove with that update before installs into the cluster, we'LL actually and there isn't upgrade that's available. Uh, I should probably wait to install this, though we're in the middle of scaling out this cluster. And I really don't want to disturb Jessica's application. Workflow. >> Yeah, so, actually, Dan, it's fine. My app is already up. It's running. Let me show it to you over here. So this is our products application that's talking to that sequel server instance. And for debugging purposes, we can see which version of sequel server we're currently talking to. Its two point two right now. And then which pod? Since this is a cluster, there's more than one secret server pod we could be connected to. Okay, I could see right there the bounder screeners they know to point to. That's the version we have right now. But, you know, >> this is kind of >> point of software operators at this point. So, you know, everyone in this room, you know, wants to see you hit that upgrade button. Let's do it. Live here on stage. Right, then. All >> right. All right. I could see where this is going. So whenever you updated operator, it's just like any other resource on communities. And so the first thing that happens is the operator pot itself gets updated so we actually see a new version of the operator is currently being created now, and what's that gets created, the overseer will be terminated. And that point, the new, softer operator will notice. It's now responsible for managing lots of existing Siegel servers already in the environment. And so it's then going Teo update each of those sickle servers to match to the new version of the single server operator and so we could see it's running. And so if we switch now to the all projects view and we filter that list down by sequel server, then we should be able to see us. So lots of these sickle servers are now being created and the old ones are being terminated. So is the rolling update across the cluster? Exactly a So the secret server operator Deploy single server and an H A configuration. And it's on ly updates a single instance of secret server at a time, which means single server always left in nature configuration, and Jessica doesn't really have to worry about downtime with their applications. >> Yeah, that's awesome dance. So glad the team doesn't have to worry about >> that anymore and just got I think enough of these might have run by Now, if you try your app again might be updated. >> Let's see Jessica's application up here. All right. On laptop three. >> Here we go. >> Fantastic. And yet look, we're We're into two before we're onto three. Now we're on to victory. Excellent on. >> You know, I actually works so well. I don't even see a reason for us to leave this on manual approval. So I'm going to switch this automatic approval. And then in the future, if a new single server comes in, then we don't have to do anything, and it'll be all automatically updated on the cluster. >> That is absolutely fantastic. And so I was glad you guys got a chance to see that rolling update across the cluster. That is so cool. The Secret Service database being automated and fully updated. That is fantastic. Alright, so I can see how a software operator doesn't able. You don't manage hundreds if not thousands of applications. I know a lot of folks or interest in the back in infrastructure. Could you give us an example of the infrastructure >> behind this console? Yeah, absolutely. So we all know that open shift is designed that run in lots of different environments. But our teams think that as your redhead over, Schiff provides one of the best experiences by deeply integrating the open chief Resource is into the azure console, and it's even integrated into the azure command line toll and the easy open ship man. And, as was announced yesterday, it's now available for everyone to try out. And there's actually one more thing we wanted to show Everyone related to open shit, for this is all so new with a penchant for which is we now have multi cluster management. This gives you the ability to keep track of all your open shift environments, regardless of where they're running as well as you can create new clusters from here. And I'll dig into the azure cluster that we were just taking a look at. >> Okay, but is this user and face something have to install them one of my existing clusters? >> No, actually, this is the host of service that's provided by Red hat is part of cloud that redhead that calm and so all you have to do is log in with your red hair credentials to get access. >> That is incredible. So one console, one user experience to see across the entire hybrid cloud we saw earlier with Red update. Right and red embers. Thank Satan. Now we see it for multi cluster management. But home shift so you can fundamentally see. Now the suffer operators do finally change the game when it comes to making human operators vastly more productive and, more importantly, making Devon ops work more efficiently together than ever before. So we saw the rich ice vehicle system of those software operators. We can manage them across the Khyber Cloud with any, um, shift instance. Install, upgrade, remove nodes, control everything about your application environment, virtual physical, all the way out to the cloud making, making things happen when the business demands it even at scale, because that's where it's going to get. Our next guest has lots of experience with demand at scale. and they're using open source container management to do it. Their work, their their their work building a successful cloud, First platform and there, the twenty nineteen Innovation Award winner. >> Please welcome twenty nineteen Innovation Award winner. Cole's senior vice president of technology, Rich Hodak. >> How you doing? Thanks. >> Thanks so much for coming out. We really appreciate it. So I guess you guys set some big goals, too. So can you baby tell us about the bold goal? Helped you personally help set for Cole's. And what inspired you to take that on? Yes. So it was twenty seventeen and life was pretty good. I had no gray hair and our business was, well, our tech was working well, and but we knew we'd have to do better into the future if we wanted to compete. Retails being disrupted. Our customers are asking for new experiences, So we set out on a goal to become an open hybrid cloud platform, and we chose Red had to partner with us on a lot of that. We set off on a three year journey. We're currently in Year two, and so far all KP eyes are on track, so it's been a great journey thus far. That's awesome. That's awesome. So So you Obviously, Obviously you think open source is the way to do cloud computing. So way absolutely agree with you on that point. So So what? What is it that's convinced you even more along? Yeah, So I think first and foremost wait, do we have a lot of traditional IAS fees? But we found that the open source partners actually are outpacing them with innovation. So I think that's where it starts for us. Um, secondly, we think there's maybe some financial upside to going more open source. We think we can maybe take some cost out unwind from these big fellas were in and thirdly, a CZ. We go to universities. We started hearing. Is we interviewed? Hey, what is Cole's doing with open source and way? Wanted to use that as a lever to help recruit talent. So I'm kind of excited, you know, we partner with Red Hat on open shift in in Rail and Gloucester and active M Q and answerable and lots of things. But we've also now launched our first open source projects. So it's really great to see this journey. We've been on. That's awesome, Rich. So you're in. You're in a high touch beta with with open shift for So what? What features and components or capabilities are you most excited about and looking forward to what? The launch and you know, and what? You know what? What are the something maybe some new goals that you might be able to accomplish with with the new features. And yeah, So I will tell you we're off to a great start with open shift. We've been on the platform for over a year now. We want an innovation award. We have this great team of engineers out here that have done some outstanding work. But certainly there's room to continue to mature that platform. It calls, and we're excited about open shift, for I think there's probably three things that were really looking forward to. One is we're looking forward to, ah, better upgrade process. And I think we saw, you know, some of that in the last demo. So upgrades have been kind of painful up until now. So we think that that that will help us. Um, number two, A lot of our open shift workloads today or the workloads. We run an open shifts are the stateless apse. Right? And we're really looking forward to moving more of our state full lapse into the platform. And then thirdly, I think that we've done a great job of automating a lot of the day. One stuff, you know, the provisioning of, of things. There's great opportunity o out there to do mohr automation for day two things. So to integrate mohr with our messaging systems in our database systems and so forth. So we, uh we're excited. Teo, get on board with the version for wear too. A critical part of being successful in the hybrid cloud is being successful in your data center with your own infrastructure. We've been helping our customers do that in these environments. For almost twenty years now, we've been running the most complex work loads in the world. But you know, while the public cloud has opened up tremendous possibilities, it also brings in another type of another layer of infrastructure complexity. So what's our next goal? Extend your extend your data center all the way to the edge while being as effective as you have been over the last twenty twenty years, when it's all at your own fingertips. First from a practical sense, Enterprises air going to have to have their own data centers in their own environment for a very long time. But there are advantages of being able to manage your own infrastructure that expand even beyond the public cloud all the way out to the edge. In fact, we talked about that very early on how technology advances in computer networking is storage are changing the physical boundaries of the data center every single day. The need, the need to process data at the source is becoming more and more critical. New use cases Air coming up every day. Self driving cars need to make the decisions on the fly. In the car factory processes are using a I need to adapt in real time. The factory floor has become the new edge of the data center, working with things like video analysis of a of A car's paint job as it comes off the line, where a massive amount of data is on ly needed for seconds in order to make critical decisions in real time. If we had to wait for the video to go up to the cloud and back, it would be too late. The damage would have already been done. The enterprise is being stretched to be able to process on site, whether it's in a car, a factory, a store or in eight or nine PM, usually involving massive amounts of data that just can't easily be moved. Just like these use cases couldn't be solved in private cloud alone because of things like blatant see on data movement, toe address, real time and requirements. They also can't be solved in public cloud alone. This is why open hybrid is really the model that's needed in the only model forward. So how do you address this class of workload that requires all of the above running at the edge? With the latest technology all its scale, let me give you a bit of a preview of what we're working on. We are taking our open hybrid cloud technologies to the edge, Integrated with integrated with Aro AM Hardware Partners. This is a preview of a solution that will contain red had open shift self storage in K V M virtual ization with Red Hat Enterprise Lennox at the core, all running on pre configured hardware. The first hardware out of the out of the gate will be with our long time. Oh, am partner Del Technologies. Rid her dot com and here we can see the classroom Dannon Jessica working on just a few moments ago From here we have a bird's eye view ofthe all of our open ship plasters across the hybrid cloud from multiple cloud providers to on premises and noticed the spare medal last year. Well, that's the one that my team built right here on this stage. So let's go ahead and open the admin console for that last year. Now, in this demo, we'LL take a look at three things. A multi plaster inventory for the open Harbor cloud at cloud redhead dot com. Second open shift container storage, providing convert storage for virtual machines and containers and the same functionality for cloud vert and bare metal. And third, everything we see here is scuba unit is native, so by plugging directly into communities, orchestration begin common storage. Let working on monitoring facilities now. Last year, we saw how continue native actualization and Q Bert allow you to run virtual machines on Cabinet is an open shift, allowing for a single converge platform to manage both containers and virtual machines. So here I have this dark net project now from last year behead of induced virtual machine running it S P darknet application, and we had started to modernize and continue. Arise it by moving. Parts of the application from the windows began to the next containers. So let's take a look at it here. I have it again. >> Oh, large shirt, you windows. It's just another service in open shift open shifts. Running both containers and virtual machines together opens a whole new world of possibilities. But why stop there? So this here be broadened to come in. It is native infrastructure as our vision to redefine the operation's off on premises infrastructure, and this applies to all matters of workloads. Using open shift on metal running all the way from the data center to the edge. No by your desk, right to main benefits. Want to help reduce the operation casts And second, to help bring advance good when it is orchestration concept to your infrastructure. So next, let's take a look at storage. So open shift container storage is software defined storage, providing the same functionality for both the public and the private lads. By leveraging the operator framework, open shift container storage automatically detects the available hardware configuration to utilize the discs in the most optimal vein. So then adding my note, you don't have to think about how to balance the storage. Storage is just another service running an open shift. >> And I really love this dashboard quite honestly, because I love seeing all the storage right here. So I'm kind of curious, though. Karima. What kind of storage would you What, What kind of applications would you use with the storage? >> Yeah, so this is the persistent storage. To be used by a database is your files and any data from applications such as a Magic Africa. Now the A Patrick after operator uses school, been at this for scheduling and high availability, and it uses open shift containers. Shortest. Restore the messages now Here are on premises. System is running a caf co workload streaming sensor data on DH. We want toe sort it and act on it locally, right In a minute. A place where maybe we need low latency or maybe in a data lake like situation. So we don't want to send the starter to the cloud. Instead, we want to act on it locally, right? Let's look at the griffon a dashboard and see how our system is doing so with the incoming message rate of about four hundred messages for second, the system seems to be performing well, right? I want to emphasize this is a fully integrated system. We're doing the testing An optimization sze so that the system can Artoo tune itself based on the applications. >> Okay, I love the automated operations. Now I am a curious because I know other folks in the audience want to know this too. What? Can you tell us more about how there's truly integrated communities can give us an example of that? >> Yes. Again, You know, I want to emphasize everything here is managed poorly by communities on open shift. Right. So you can really use the latest coolest to manage them. All right. Next, let's take a look at how easy it is to use K native with azure functions to script alive Reaction to a live migration event. >> Okay, Native is a great example. If actually were part of my breakout session yesterday, you saw me demonstrate came native. And actually, if you want to get hands on with it tonight, you can come to our guru night at five PM and actually get hands on like a native. So I really have enjoyed using K. Dated myself as a software developer. And but I am curious about the azure functions component. >> Yeah, so as your functions is a function is a service engine developed by Microsoft fully open source, and it runs on top of communities. So it works really well with our on premises open shift here. Right now, I have a simple azure function that I already have here and this azure function, you know, Let's see if this will send out a tweet every time we live My greater Windows virtual machine. Right. So I have it integrated with open shift on DH. Let's move a note to maintenance to see what happens. So >> basically has that via moves. We're going to see the event triggered. They trigger the function. >> Yeah, important point I want to make again here. Windows virtue in machines are equal citizens inside of open shift. We're investing heavily in automation through the use of the operator framework and also providing integration with the hardware. Right, So next, Now let's move that note to maintain it. >> But let's be very clear here. I wanna make sure you understand one thing, and that is there is no underlying virtual ization software here. This is open ship running on bear. Meddle with these bare metal host. >> That is absolutely right. The system can automatically discover the bare metal hosts. All right, so here, let's move this note to maintenance. So I start them Internets now. But what will happen at this point is storage will heal itself, and communities will bring back the same level of service for the CAFTA application by launching a part on another note and the virtual machine belive my great right and this will create communities events. So we can see. You know, the events in the event stream changes have started to happen. And as a result of this migration, the key native function will send out a tweet to confirm that could win. It is native infrastructure has indeed done the migration for the live Ian. Right? >> See the events rolling through right there? >> Yeah. All right. And if we go to Twitter? >> All right, we got tweets. Fantastic. >> And here we can see the source Nord report. Migration has succeeded. It's a pretty cool stuff right here. No. So we want to bring you a cloud like experience, but this means is we're making operational ease a fuse as a top goal. We're investing heavily in encapsulating management knowledge and working to pre certify hardware configuration in working with their partners such as Dell, and they're dead already. Note program so that we can provide you guidance on specific benchmarks for specific work loads on our auto tuning system. >> All right, well, this is tow. And highlight in the skill set is that we, as a group required in order to transform using these approaches, we can no move things from ideation to scale and weeks and days sometimes rather than months. Andi, I think that if we can take what they've done on DH, use more open source technology, we contain that technology and apply across the whole group to tackle this Jill challenge. And I think that we use technologists and it's really cool. I think that we can no use technology and open source technology to solve some of these big challenges that we have and actually just preserve the planet in a better way. So So what's the next step for you guys at BP? So moving forward, we we are embracing ourselves, bracing a clothed, forced organization. We need to continue to live to deliver on our strategy, build >> over the technology across the entire group to address the jewel >> challenge and continue to make some of these bold changes and actually get into and really use. Our technology is, I said, too addresses you'LL challenge and make the future of our planet a better place for ourselves and our children and our children's children. That's that's a big goal. Now comes the part that, frankly, I think his best part of the best part of this presentation We're going to meet the type of person that makes all of these things a reality. This tip this type of person typically works for one of our customers or with one of with one of our customers as a partner to help them make the kinds of bold goals like you've heard about today and the ones you'll hear about Maura the way more in the >> week. I think the thing I like most about it is you feel that reward Just helping people I mean and helping people with stuff you enjoy right with computers. My dad was the math and science teacher at the local high school. And so in the early eighties, that kind of met here, the default person. So he's always bringing in a computer stuff, and I started a pretty young age. What Jason's been able to do here is Mohr evangelize a lot of the technologies between different teams. I think a lot of it comes from the training and his certifications that he's got. He's always concerned about their experience, how easy it is for them to get applications written, how easy it is for them to get them up and running at the end of the day. We're a loan company, you know. That's way we lean on accounting like red. That's where we get our support front. That's why we decided to go with a product like open shift. I really, really like to product. So I went down. The certification are out in the training ground to learn more about open shit itself. So my daughter's teacher, they were doing a day of coding, and so they asked me if I wanted to come and talk about what I do and then spend the day helping the kids do their coding class. The people that we have on our teams, like Jason, are what make us better than our competitors, right? Anybody could buy something off the shelf. It's people like him. They're able to take that and mold it into something that then it is a great offering for our partners and for >> customers. You know what makes open source work is passion and people that apply those considerable talents that passion like Jason here to making it worked and to contribute their idea there. There's back. You know, everything you've heard about today is just a small representation of what's ahead of us. We've had us. We've had a set of goals and realize some bold goals over the last number of years that have gotten us to where we are today. Just to recap those bold goals First bait build a company based solely on open source software. It seems so logical now, but it had never been done before. Next building the operating system of the future that's going to run in power. The enterprise making the standard base platform in the op in the Enterprise Olympics based operating system. And after that making hybrid cloud the architecture of the future make hybrid the new data center, all leading to the largest software acquisition in history. Think about it around us around a company with one hundred percent open source DNA without. Throughout. Despite all the fun we encountered over those last seventeen years, I have to ask, Is there really any question that open source has won? Realizing our bold goals and changing the way software is developed in the commercial world was what we set out to do from the first day in the Red Hat was born. But we only got to that goal because of you. Many of you contributors, many of you knew toe open source software and willing to take the risk along side of us and many of partners on that journey, both inside and outside of Red Hat. Going forward with the reach of IBM, Red hat will accelerate. Even Mohr. This will bring open source general innovation to the next generation hybrid data center, continuing on our original mission and goal to bring open source technology toe every corner of the planet. What I what I just went through in the last hour Soul, while mind boggling to many of us in the room who have had a front row seat to this overto last seventeen plus years has only been red hats. First step. Think about it. We have brought open source development from a niche player to the dominant development model in software and beyond. Open Source is now the cornerstone of the multi billion dollar enterprise software world and even the next generation hybrid act. Architecture would not even be possible without Lennox at the core in the open innovation that it feeds to build around it. This is not just a step forward for software. It's a huge leap in the technology world beyond even what the original pioneers of open source ever could have imagined. We have. We have witnessed open source accomplished in the last seventeen years more than what most people will see in their career. Or maybe even a lifetime open source has forever changed the boundaries of what will be possible in technology in the future. And in the one last thing to say, it's everybody in this room and beyond. I'm John Furrier, your host, we have two great guests from C5 Accelerator in Washington D.C., now kicking it out in Bahrain. Hadyah Fathalla, executive director C5 Accelerate and Eva Dimitriadis, good to see you again. >> Thank you. >> Chief operating officer. >> Great to be here. >> Guys, congratulations. Bahrain, D.C. >> The world. >> The world, it's global. >> Thank you, yeah. >> C5 Global. >> It's great to be here. >> It's an exciting time. I mean, I got to ask you Eva, because we had previously met, talked about interviews in D.C. Smart people that known Amazon, because Teresa and Andy Jassy and Jeff Bezos always say, "We're going to be misunderstood for a while." Come on, that's not true. (laughing) A region in this area is going to explode the entrepreneurial scene. What's your take? >> I think that's absolutely true. As we see today at the Summit, there's just such a growing number of entrepreneurs and people who are excited to embrace digital innovation. Three years ago I think the story would have been different but ever since we set up the accelerator here, which was the first once in Bahrain, we've just seen an explosion of interest and not just from Bahrain but from around the GCC. Even start ups from abroad coming and setting up here as their Middle East practice. >> Talk about C5 for a second. Let's take a minute, to explain what you guys do. I jumped ahead a little bit because I'm excited because I just love the entrepreneurial energy. This is a really important thing happening and you guys are playing a role. Talk about C5 Accelerate, what are you guys doin'? What's your business model? Just take a minute to explain as a set up. >> So I'll let Eva talk maybe more about our global operations but really C5 Accelerate a few years ago, branch the business which was largely an investment business, including innovation business and we built Bahrain's first and one the regions, in fact, first cloud enabled accelerators and Bahrain's very first technology accelerator and we did that in partnership with the Economic Development Board, the labor firm Tamkeen and obviously with AWS. Really we benefited from the first mover advantage and the thinking around that was that as Amazon grows it's geographic footprint there is great opportunity to build on the cloud in places like the Middle East where the ecosystem is nascent and there is an amazing first mover advantage. >> Yeah. >> So when we partnered with the government to build this, we realized as we do that, we also need to contribute to building a healthy ecosystem so we built this first accelerator and we have felt-- >> When was that, by the way? >> 2016. >> Great, thank you. >> Actually September marks our two year. We've since graduated five cohorts. We're gearing up for six and we have 34 start ups under our belt. Our first cohort was an all Bahraini cohort and today we're very proud to say that actually half of the start ups that have graduated from this program that is based out of Bahrain are international start ups. That's what we're doing locally. Maybe Eva can tell you a little bit more about what we're doing on a global scale. >> You know and that's important. I want to make sure you got that out about having a bunch of start ups under your belt because when I went to the start up Bahrain session yesterday I was really, really impressed by two things. One is, just the smart energy, the smart people who like understand entrepreneurship. Either went to school for it or have learned through the scar tissue of trial and tribulations like myself. And then the entrepreneurs were there themselves. >> Mm-hmm. >> And you know a healthy entrepreneurial community when they start bitchin' and moanin', they're all chirping away, they're hungry. There's a hungry appetite for entrepreneurship here and creating but it's not fake entrepreneurship. They're really hungry. They're, where's the cash? Where's the capital? So this is really a positive sign. >> It is and I want to add something really quick before Eva jumps in, I think in the past two years what's great about a small ecosystem and the ability to pivot and build fast is you actually see the impact that you can have as an individual and as a company and as a community really on the landscape. But also regionally we've had great collaborative efforts across the GCC and in the region with partners in Saudi and Kuwait and Egypt and in Jordan so I think there's a lot of momentum that we're riding on now, and I think it's a great time to be building in the tech space. >> Well Eva, before you get to your comments. I just want to follow up on the comment around Saudi and different regions because this is a trend that has been happening for a while in Silicon Valley, as you know. People have been leaving Silicon Valley, because it's cost to live there, but people have been putting engineering teams outside of Silicon Valley. I mean, 20 years ago, you only went outside of Silicon Valley or the US to outsource which is not really product development, it's just coding. Then the trend became real engineering and product development, real chops outside. We just had Abdul on from Saudi and he was talking about his shape of his team, the psychology, the make up of the people, it's just not in Saudi Arabia. It's in China, it's all over the world. As developers are working across the world, this is a really big deal. I mean this is the new dynamic. >> Yep. >> Diverse teams, geo located, no borders, this is going to change the political landscape. It's a cultural shift. >> Definitely, I mean I think it's a while before we have here the same secret sauce that exists in Silicon Valley or that has existed there for the past decade or so. But the emphasis on training and upscaling is huge and as we've heard a number of times today, there are so many incentives to do so for free so you can actually learn to code, you can become a certified AWS coder for free in Bahrain. Which is a phenomenal advantage and step up. I mean, no one would pay me to do that in the UK. I think that, along with a number of other initiatives are really going to leap frog the development here. And in terms of what you talk about, the sort of the landscape and geo location, it goes in so many different directions now. There's no single focus so we had a Swiss company last year come and incorporate in Bahrain, and hire developers here to grow their business. It can go in so many different directions. >> Yeah, the winner take all business model is an old business model and now it's everyone's winning so it's a little bit of flattening of the wealth and the opportunities but the pie is getting bigger. >> Yes. >> I think this is the dynamic that cloud and Amazon continues to demonstrate that the Oracles, for instance, of the world, we got to win it all, lock everyone in and we got to own it. That ethos is not, that dog's not hunting, as they say. This is changing the entrepreneurial landscape and the other thing I observe is the younger generation. Leveling up is very easy to them. It's like a video game, right? Leveling up is AI, blockchain, I think one of your companies I talked to, oh we're doing a blockchain implementation. They will eat up the cloud. >> Mm. >> I mean it's going to be like, pretty fast. >> You mentioned-- >> So I'm expecting some accelerated. >> Definitely. I mean you mentioned hungry but they're also fearless. The entrepreneurs that we work with have that perfect mix of a super smart idea and an understanding of a niche sector of the market but also this resilience and recklessness that you need to embrace the opportunity. And all the scary stuff that comes with it. >> And I think adding to that, I think what's great with Amazon coming to Bahrain, with us working across the globe, it's a cross pollination that happens because whether we like it or not, like Eva said, we are not Silicon Valley yet and maybe we don't aspire to be specifically Silicon Valley and we want to build our own unique ecosystem but the lessons learned from the likes of Silicon Valley and London and Singapore and China and everywhere else in the world. >> Yeah. >> Really helps build, not just the skills required but the grit that could otherwise be absent. >> The grit's key, yeah. >> And it can engender the kind of cultural shift that's necessary so you need, so you can develop these robust and resilient qualities that are necessary for a founder. >> Well, that's a really great point. I moved from the east coast in the US to California with my first start up because that's where the action was and I can tell ya, I've been there 20 years and I've been an entrepreneur doing things ever since. And there's a fallacy of trying to emulate Silicon Valley. Every i dotted, t crossed and trying to take the playbook. There's no direct match, however, there's some consistencies in there. That's grit, creativity, openness, capital markets and community and this is something that you guys kind of have in place. And then adapting that to your culture. Now I will say that my impression here is it feels a little bit Silicon Valley because it's a little bit more open and loose. People like to go fast. Fast and loose is the Silicon Valley way. Dubai's a little bit more like New York to me. So I can feel more, valley-like here. I'm not saying that Dubai's bad, I'm just saying it's different cultures. Bigger, its more ... >> There's definitely a lot of agility here. I think one of the other advantages which leads back into what C5 is as a whole, we're primarily an investment business. We have a venture capital fund based in the UK. What we're really looking for is investible, scalable business models where we're de risking the cost of capital with cloud computing because that is how ultimately these start ups scale. Another benefit that we really see in this market is value for money. If you're a start up in Silicon Valley and you get to the stage that some of our start ups get to when they finish their program, your valuation is pretty much always triple what we would see here, so valuation's a very sensitive subject. Our start ups hate talking about it. We structure our deals with them in a way that generally avoids having a valuation. >> It's very easy to do business here. You just keep on increasing the valuation, all the stars will come dropping to your doorstep. >> It's a nuanced area. >> Yeah. >> But that being said, you can get really good value for money businesses but more importantly you're investing in the teams and the entrepreneurs and there's no shortage of that here. >> Let's talk about the ecosystem here and then let's talk about the women in tech because one of the things that blew me away yesterday was Teresa Carlson held a women breakfast and for the first time I got kicked off a table because they wanted to make room for the workshop. >> Sorry about that. (laughing) >> I'm like, wait a minute. This is not an inclusive environment. Sorry, no, we need the table. Okay, I know, I was happy to tap out. But I wasn't expecting that and the energy and the, just really, again, this event, they had to lock the doors for the keynote so there's really a big interest across the board. Talk about the ecosystem and then the women in tech situation. >> So I think the ecosystem is an interesting question because, I mean, we work very collaboratively. Like I said, even though this initiative largely was kind of envisioned by the government and mainly by the Economic Development Board and I'm sure you got a chance to speak to Khalid Humaidan, he might have given you a bit of an idea of how this started off but really the EBD threw this idea of start up Bahrain to the community and said, "Look, you guys lead on it." And it took a little bit of time for the community to figure out what that really means and what it's going to look like but it really made the community and ourselves also think pragmatically about what we want this ecosystem to look like. So even though it's not as mature, like I said, as other ecosystems further away and especially in the west, it is coming together very nicely because it's coming together as a collaborative effort. You see a very good continuous consultative work between private sector, public sector, the start ups and then the other stakeholders, including ourselves, and academia. We still have a long way to go, I think specially in areas and this is something that I always emphasize, is to shift the culture you really need to start at a much younger age so at schools, at universities. We engage with them and are keen to do more on that front but I think we are laying the foundation for what I hope in the next five, 10 years will be a pretty competitive entrepreneurial and start up-- >> It might be sooner. >> Hopefully sooner. >> Yeah. >> I think we have the right recipe now to build a robust ecosystem. >> Yeah, I can say I can attest to that after what I saw yesterday. Your thoughts? >> Yeah I mean our team in Bahrain is 100% Bahraini. I'm based in London, but Hadyah here leads a phenomenal team who are all Bahraini citizens. Being the island that it is, we know everybody so Hadyah's done an excellent job of engaging with everyone from schools to universities to post grads to public sector, private sector. So really all the stakeholders in the ecosystem are engaged and everyone from the oil and gas industry to the finance sphere are thinking about how innovation can advance their businesses so that they don't get left behind at the train station. >> Yeah. >> It's really top of mind and top of agenda which is a very invigorating scenario. I think, going back to some of the initiatives, from bankruptcy laws to having a fintech bay with the Central Bank of Bahrain, there's just so much, like they're constantly pushing the envelope to make this a friendly environment for entrepreneurs to come and do business. >> And I want to add one thing. There's always this question of, does government have a role to drive innovation and create an ecosystem? >> They do. >> I think Bahrain is a good example for others in the region and even beyond to say actually government does have an important role. >> They do. >> If you look at Bahrain, it's government that has been very flexible and nimble in terms of moving to accommodate. Whether it's the new bankruptcy laws or allowing for the fintech sandbox and a cloud first policy and shaping the start up Bahrain. The government has taken the lead on a lot of these initiatives so it's a good example of how there can be a top down approach to building an entrepreneurial landscape but also where the bottom needs to come and meet the top so I think Bahrain a good example. >> Just to reiterate, my observation is that they know how to get things going and sponsor but they're also listening and self aware and even on theCUBE here, we heard comments like, we'll get out of the way. >> Mm-hmm. >> Now that's the difference between good judgment. >> Mm-hmm. >> You know? And, no, no I funded you, I own you, I mean I've seen that in the public sector or, we're going to fund you as an NGO and then I kind of own you so come to my receptions and be my show horse-- >> Mascot. >> Show all of my people how good I am, donating money. So there's a little bit of a balance between enabling. >> Yep. >> But at the end of the day, this is going to be a fast pace and that's where I think the speed, knowing when to get out of the way and letting the community go. I mean, people like speed here. Cars are driving fast, you got a Formula 1 race track up at 14 months. >> They like speed but sometimes things are surprisingly slow. >> Yes. >> So it's incredible that we are where we are. You asked about women in tech and I think there's something there that we're really proud of. C5 globally, 43% of the start up founders that we've supported through our accelerators are women. In terms of diversity, we're thrilled about that statistic. We'd like it be 50%. >> Yep. >> And I think that the Middle East, we're seeing so much hunger from women entrepreneurs and women who want to learn to code to be founders and we want to do everything in our power to enable that. >> Computer science degrees coming out of the university? >> Absolutely. Hadyah here had this fantastic idea a year ago to found what we call C5 Nebula. I'll let Hadyah talk about why we came up with that name and how it relates to our business but this is now a new stream of our business which really it's a membership platform where all women globally are invited to join and we provide education, upscaling, jogs, connectivity, mentorships and through this network we are allowing a complete globalization of the talent and skills that we have. >> Yeah. >> So you can be a student in D.C. wanting to come and volunteer to work for a company here and we will make that match happen. I think it's a very exciting phase for us and we've seen so much demand for this program. Maybe Hadyah can talk about why we came up with this name? >> Yeah, so like Eva said, we, I'm Bahraini, we've always had, we've been lucky to have been pioneering and have work very closely men and have had really equal opportunity but in industries like tech, globally, women's representation is lower than that of men and there are areas where there's still work to be done. >> A lot of work to be done, yeah. >> So last year, actually, with the first AWS Summit, when Teresa was out here, we figured we do a women in tech breakfast. When we were curating that guest list we couldn't find that many women and we didn't know if wasn't that we didn't know them or that they didn't exist and we realized really we need to put together something to bring all the women together and work more closely so we built Nebula, really to, like Eva said, do three things and a little more. One is the connectivity side of things and then the upscaling but also to raise awareness and appreciation. >> What is Nebula? >> What is? >> What is Nebula? >> So Nebula, scientifically it's an astrological, astronomical phenomenon-- >> But it's your network group, is that what it's called? >> It's a platform. >> Okay. >> So it's actually been officially launched three weeks ago, you can go online and visit it and it's a platform that allows you to become a member of Nebula and gives you access to mentorship, to opportunities to upscale and train but also to raise awareness and appreciation for the amazing opportunities for women in the tech space. >> Is there a URL? >> There is a URL, it's-- >> We've been debating what is is today. (laughing) >> It's www.c5nebula.com. >> Okay, I'll put it up, publish it with the video. >> And what it means, it's the Latin word for cloud and it's where stars are born. >> Yeah. It's also, what's important, is it's a compilation of a bunch of different clouds and electrons and it's a mess, it's a bit of a mess but it's a lot of forces working together and I guess the moral of the story is, we can create stars in the space but we all have to work together and it all has to come together to-- >> And it's powerful when you work together. >> Only 10% of VC funding worldwide goes to women founder companies and 1% of that goes to women of color so there's some staggering statistics there. Globally, this is not a Middle East problem, this is globally a real big area of disparity that we're trying to help address. >> Well you guys know our door's open in California and Boston, and certainly the women in tech, we got a big network, we can merge them into the Nebula connect our networks. >> We would love that. >> We would love that. >> We're open and anything you guys have to share with us we love co-creating with the communities, that's what we do at theCUBE. We are here live in Bahrain for Amazon's Web Service Summit in the Middle East, really built around the big announcement around their region coming which would open up in Q1 2019. And Amazon full force here and really bringing together a combination of cloud-computing, cloud-native, together with the community and entrepreneurship here. And of course we wanted to save the best for last of the day interview, the entrepreneurs themselves are going to tell a straight scoop what's happening 'cause it's a lot of action here. Alharith Alatawi, who is the CEO of ONEGCC and Zaman Zaman, founder and CEO of Skiplino. Welcome to theCUBE. Thanks for coming on. >> Thank you for having us. >> Thank you for having us. >> So I got to say, I was watching you guys yesterday in your little, and then Bahrain, you're on your best behavior. You didn't chirp too loud, but I can see the energy in the entrepreneurs. You know there's real entrepreneurs in the room when you can see the energy, right? And all the executives were in there, and you've got the Amazon, so you're on your best behavior banging your fists on the door. You guys are doing some good work, so congratulations. >> Thank you very much. >> So what's the real deal? What's it like here? I mean I know it's tough to get access to capital, but the government's bringing some capital to the table, there's momentum, there's opportunities. What's the straight scoop here? >> So for the past three years, when Start-up Bahrain started, there's been tremendous support from the government because they really want to see this, what they're calling the Fourth Industrial Revolution, they want it to happen. They're pushing for it. They're pushing technology start-ups. And we were really blessed to be, I mean to have started just a few months before that, so we're riding an amazing wave. We've been getting a lot of support from Tamkeen, a lot of legislation support from the government, the EDB obviously have been doing a massive job in trying to support us, getting us business. And I mean since we started til today, we've at least doubled or even tripled the amount of clients we have. And there's a lot of attention now to technology start-ups. And I think as a growing sector, Bahrain, we're really reaping the fruits of it. >> And what is your start-up, ONEGCC? Just take a minute to explain what your start-up's doing, how many people you've got going on, the stage of the opportunity. >> So before I founded or co-founded ONEGCC, I was in an investment firm, and one of our investments was in Saudi. It was called a mega-recruitment company. And what we were trying to do is, we had 500,000 work permits. We had to bring a bunch of people and start outsourcing them to companies, but the Ministry of Labor still wanted us to maintain Saudization within these companies that we're working with. And it was a very tough challenge trying to find the right GCC nationals, the right Saudis. I mean 40% of them hold degrees in Humanitarian Islamic Studies, so how do you place all of these when most of the jobs that are being offered are in construction, retail, and other services? So that's when we started ONEGCC. We said you know what, we'll hire people based on skills rather than their job titles or academic background. And that's really where we started ONEGCC. >> So it solves your own problem? >> Exactly. >> You had a little pain there. >> Well today it's our own problem. >> Yeah, now you have a bigger problem. It's called growth. >> (laughs) Yeah, but tomorrow it's going to become a global problem with AI and smart machines wiping out almost maybe 70%. >> So how many people involved in the start-up? What's the stage, would you call it? >> So today we have 18 employees. We're still early stage, but we're growing as well as we can. >> Great. Tell us about your story here. >> Well, mine was a multi-lingual intelligent queue management system. So we realized there was a gap in the market. >> First, explain what a queue management system is, and remember 'queue' is not an American word. That's an English word, or international word. Queue is 'line' they call it in America. >> Okay, let's say line management. >> But we're talking about physical standing in line at the bank. >> Yes. When you go there, you actually take a token and wait. So we realized it was a problem not only in Bahrain. It was a global problem. What we did was, we went to investigate the issue. How it started was, I went to a bank a day before I traveled, and I had to wait for one hour and forty-five minutes just to clear a check. So I found that not acceptable. So what we did was go study the markets. And we realized that was like three or four players controlling the market for the past thirty years. Some people tried to do it cloud-based, but they didn't get it right because they didn't cater to those segments, which is the large B2B clients that need to scale or have a large number of branches. So when we decided to go and build it on the cloud, we realized that there is no performance management on each agent that is live and was streamed. So when we built the reports, we realized that most of it is bottlenecks that can be solved with AI or machine learning. So we incorporated that into Skiplino. Now Skiplino has around 2,500 companies from around the globe in 196 countries. And it's now in 69 languages. >> That's amazing. How many people in your opportunity, working with you? >> Including founders, we're around 15. >> Fifteen, great. Well congratulations, and one of the things I wanted to kind of get here while we're broadcasting around the continent and around cloud is, I live in Silicon Valley, so everyone's got the entrepreneurial bug going on, but you have successes and failures. That's the way it works. You've got to try something and hit the homeruns once in a while, but you got to get a couple base hits. It's really hard. I mean people don't understand how hard it is, right? If they've never done it, it's hard as hell. So, but having the ecosystem support is key, but Start-up Bahrain is doing some good work with EDB. What is the key requirement and what's the need? Where is it working, are you guys seeing on the ground here? Because the community's there and that's a check. That's hard to do. I mean robust entrepreneur community's good, and there's money. So now you've just got to fill in the blank. What is the cloud going to bring you guys? What are you guys hoping for? What do you want to see? >> Of course with the cloud, the best thing that comes with the cloud is scalability, for us. In effect, we're removing the unpremised queue management systems businesses, but the good thing that's happening in Bahrain, and around the GCC too, is ministries and governments are more receptive for additional transformation, and they know that's the only way to keep up. So actually we're the first cloud-based service the Bahraini government used. >> And you're using Amazon now? >> No, (laughs) we're actually a Microsoft concept partner. >> Oh, okay. >> We're the first. >> Are you using Azure? >> Yes. >> Okay, makes sense. Great partner. >> Because we usually deal with banks and telecoms. Microsoft always has a foot in the door there, but we are thinking of having an AWS structure, too. >> It's okay, use it here. It is what it is, a multi-cloud world we're living in. How about your solution? >> So actually we were in the first cohort of C5 Accelerate, which is a program supported by AWS, so we are on AWS, and obviously for us, as a start-up, setting up in the beginning, we have limited resources, and setting up on the cloud just makes it so much easier. >> Yeah, a no-brainer. Not a decision. >> Exactly. >> You got to go to cloud. If you do a start-up and you're not on the cloud, you're spending too much cash. >> (laughs) Exactly. >> It's just the way it is. It's the dumbest thing you should ever do. Unless there's a prototype and you want it next to you, like a puppy and a dog or whatever pet, kind of thing, a security issue. Other than that, there's no reason. >> And it's faster to set up. It's easier for us to reach a wider audience. When we do reach the wider audience- >> What do you think about the show here? What was your walk-away? Obviously you guys are in the middle of the community. We're here for the first time. I was really impressed and I learned a lot, and I made some observations that I didn't expect to have that were really positive. It was a good experience for me, but you guys live it every day. Amazon's in town. There's good dynamics going on. What's your impression? >> Impression on what? >> This show, Amazon's presence, the community coming together. Everyone came here from the gulf states. >> I think one of the main things that we needed to happen in the system is that mind shift. So corporates to start adopting start-up technologies, and for investors who are used to investing in traditional investments and real estate to start actually investing in start-ups. So I think AWS really helped in that mind shift. I think the work that EDB is doing also is helping that mind shift. Now we're seeing more angel investors who are interested in getting into the tech start-up space and more corporates are willing to adopt our technologies, even though they're fairly new. >> Your thoughts on the show? >> It definitely shined a spotlight on Bahrain. Getting Amazon to open AWS in Bahrain is, first of all, we're getting a lot of talent that's going to come in and be trained to set up. So it's a huge- >> It's like you guys are standing around. The metaphor, I'm imagining, you're standing around, you're working on some things, you're hustling, you're scrapping, you're smart. And then all of a sudden, a big resource generator just pops down and says, hey entrepreneurs, I was built for you. >> Yeah. >> And you're there and now you're present at creation. And when you're present at creation of a movement that has this much growth because let's face it, this is going to be growth, and you guys are going to be the leaders. >> Yeah. >> Hopefully. >> So you got to pay it forward. You have big responsibilities. >> Hopefully. >> And you going to make some money along the way, too. I mean, you know the old expression. >> No pressure, huh? (laughs) >> You know the expression, "Hang around the barber shop, "you'll get a haircut." So this is, "Hang around the cloud, "you're going to create some value." So you've got to capture it. So this is the dynamic that I see as an entrepreneur. I was like, damn, if I lived here, I'd be setting up shop. I'd have five companies going on. I'd be telling all my friends to come on in. >> Because you're in the ground floor right now. >> You're present at creation. We're going to start covering you guys, and do some work with you guys. I'm already convinced. >> It's a big wave, and we're happy to be riding it. >> We're going to collaborate with you guys. I think it's a really unique thing. I mean at this scale, it's unprecedented. I mean this is Amazon. I mean in the U.S. everyone is jockeying for where Amazon's next headquarters is going to be, and literally, people are freaking out, like, come to my state. Because they know, with it come jobs, services. It's like putting up a sports stadium, and all of a sudden there's all these new things around it, right? >> Sure. >> It's going on, >> Exactly. >> So this is going to be a big opportunity. >> It's huge. >> For start-ups. So you guys are going to be reaping the rewards. >> Hopefully. >> You hungry? >> We are. (all laughing) >> You have no idea. >> I'm from California. In America, it's like we call it the wave. Get your surfboard, get out there. A lot of sets coming in. So congratulations. Thanks for sharing. >> Thank you very much. >> Thank you for coming to Bahrain. We'd love the coverage, we meet a lot of great people. Our next guest is Simon Martin who's the ambassador of the British embassy here in Bahrain. Simon, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thanks. >> Thanks for joining us. >> My pleasure. >> So, OK, so I want, I want to just kind of get your perspective. I met the US ambassador yesterday the last night at dinner. He's kind of new to the area and the job. >> But he's already, >> You've got experience, >> But he's already well informed, I can tell you (laughs). >> He's well informed (laughs). Birth by fire, thrown in the deep end. You've been here for a few years. >> Yeah, three. >> Take a minute to talk about the environment here, because we're first time here. We're learning or observing. I'm certainly surprised. My daughter was asking me: What are the women like there? We had a women's breakfast yesterday. 70 plus people. The energy, the diversity, interesting culture. Feels like very open, what's your thoughts. >> Well, very much so, I mean, Bahrain has been at the sort of crossroads of international travel for hundreds and hundreds of years. The UK's relationship with Bahrain, the formal one, goes back just over 200. And that was all to do with trade. Manama means the place of sleep. And it was the place that people used to stop to rest on their way across the Arabian subcontinent and towards the Indian subcontinent, and so on. So, it's a place which is naturally welcoming of foreigners and outside ideas. And I think that's what Amazon have found here. So, there is an often lot of change going on in this part of the world. Bahrain is relatively small economy compared to its neighbors. It was the place that oil was first discovered in the Gulf, but, actually, once they discovered it, they realized that she had rather less than most of the neighbors and, therefore, it's an economy which has had to adapt to keep, keep growing. In contrast, >> Mainly, mainly the dependence on oil, other oil-rich areas. >> Yeah. >> Right, is that it? >> Yeah. So, that's been the main stay of the economy for some time, but there is not the, there is not yet the potential for the growth that's needed in order to help develop an economy with its, with the necessary modern infrastructure. A growing population, a need for, for quality employment for young people which is something that we've heard a lot of in the last few years. >> Talk about your history, how long have you been in the job you're in, what's the background, what are some of the things that you've done >> OK >> at the government in the UK. >> Yeah, well, Thank you, so I've been here for three years. Before that, I was working, actually, for His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. And in that role, visited this part of the world on a couple of occasions, and so, and so the impact of that very important part of our relationship, royal family's relationship with the royal families in this part of the Gulf, and it just opened my eyes a bit to the, to the importance of having multifaceted relationships. And, again, this is what we're now, this is what we are now seeing here, that Amazon Web Services with the cloud region that they are building here have brought a new dimension, >> (laughs) The fly got... >> Not surprised, to the Bahraini economy. >> So, tell me about the multifaceted piece of news. What I'm fascinated by is the Dubai dynamic, right. You know, I see Dubai, a lot of events there, Blockchain events, AI events, a lot of tech events. Feels like New York to me, using the American metaphor. It's kind of like a Silicon Valery kind of vibe. But they all work, been working together for years. What's the historical relationships, how have they changed, and how does cloud computing make up for that? How does that play into it? >> Well, of course there've been, it's been a very collaborative and yet competitive relationship between the different, particularly the finance centers of the Gulf for many years. The economic success story of Dubai is very well known. Bahrain has continued to develop, but without the resources that underpin the UAE success, has done so on a more, more progressive way. But this is always be, going to be a much smaller economy and Bahrain has to, has to compete in niches in which it has the competitive advantage. And it's this, what we have now happening here, is creating a wonderful new niche opportunity for Bahrain. But, of course, I don't think am letting out any secrets to say that each of the countries in the Gulf would love to have been hosting the new cloud region. >> Yeah. >> So Bahrain had try incredibly hard to present an environment in which to host this kind of, this kind of investment which requires regulation. It requires openness and ease of doing business and it also requires an openness to developing the labor force to support not only the Amazon, but all of the train of companies that we're expecting to invest along behind it. >> Well, Simon, I really appreciate your experience and candor here on theCUBE. Certainly, for us it's a new area and you have certainly a perspective for, for the Royal Family in the UK, and now being here. But one of the interesting things I'd like to get your perspective on is, you know, you look at globalization and you look at regulations, you look at digital, things like GDPR, you see all traditional things, you mean, you can go back when I was a young kid growing up, I remember the pound and the French franc and all the different currencies going on, and then EU comes together. And now you have Asia and cryptocurrency. So you have a whole another cloud computing generation coming where that might reimagine the political landscape, might imagine the economic relationships. These are opportunities, but also threats. And so how people handle it is interesting. So, how do you, when you look at that kind of dynamic, you got a little bit uncertainty and opportunity at the same time, depending how you look at it, it's the glass half full or the glass half empty. >> Exactly. >> How should executives and government officials start thinking about this new model, this new marketplace. London is certainly the center of the action and connects now into Bahrain, could be a different dynamic, frictionless, digital. >> Mhmm. >> People living across borders. These are new dynamics. What's your thoughts on this new melting pot of digital impact? >> Well, of course, everybody wants a piece of it, everybody wants to be at the center of a new melting pot. And for Bahrain, they're looking to be the of it within, within this region, but of course, the Dubai Finance Center and, you know, Abu Dhabi and Kuwait, and so on are also, are also very keen, and no one, no one is expecting to be the dominant player. And certainly from Bahrain's perspective, it's very much about creating the environment in which companies will see, this is a good place to start. The Gulf region is a coherent region with an incipient single market, and so on, within the GCC, and so, naturally, investors from the outside are going to look at one place to start. And so what Bahrain has done, and I think it's, it's been very well founded, it's just taken place over the three years that I've been here, it's to dramatically increase the ease of doing business, and then find proportionate ways in which the government can support new companies to get them established. So, you mentioned GDPR and, you know, how's this going to affect a company in the Gulf. Well, I was at the launch of a very interesting new big data software project by one of the, in fact British owned new startups in the FinTech Bay here which is supported by the Economic Development Board. They're starting point is that the product that we are selling out of Bahrain is GDPR compliant, which gives you an idea of the way, >> Yeah. >> in which even from, from this relatively small island in the Gulf, >> Yeah. >> the global perspective has been taken. >> And certainly with, you know, digital currency, the Know Your Customer Anti Money Laundering is the big thing too, you got to get that right. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> So, they have an opportunity with FinTech. Final question for you, as you look out and see the human capital market and the future of work. >> Yeah. >> It's a big conversation we're always having and certainly I live in Silicon Valley where everyone's, no secret that there's a migration out of Silicon Valley due to the prices of living there, but yet concentration of entrepreneurship. People are going to have engineering teams all over the world. so you have a disperse workforce now crossing borders and not just the domicile issue, that's one, you know, taxes, where to domicile, outside say the US or other countries. So, you have a combination of diverse workforces. >> Mhmm. >> This is big, this is a big opportunity too, challenge and opportunity. >> It is, it is. And, of course, there are not just big changes, now, there's constant fluctuation in the way the workforce and the populations in this part of the world and within the gulf are changing. Look at Vision 2030 in Saudi Arabia, the big increase in the Saudi workforce, both through the policy of Saudization and through the creation of many more opportunities for women in the workforce. That's affecting Bahrain. But Bahrain has always been a place where people come to work and sometimes to work remotely, sometimes to live here and work across in Saudi Arabia. So, the Bahrainis feel that they are very, very attuned to these challenges. But I might just mention as well that this is not just about economics. And what impresses me about the reform program you see going on here is that, the idea is that we will create a broader and wider spread opportunity, particularly through the opportunities for young professionals working in AWS, but also in the environment all the way around it, for all communities in Bahrain, not just the wealthy, not just the sort of Ivy league equivalent graduates. >> Yeah. >> And so that's why the academy that they're setting up here can, >> And then network does emerge in social networking is going to bring people closer together. >> Yeah. >> OK, great to have you on. Final question is, as people look at this moment in time, maybe an inflection point, shot heard around the Gulf, if you will, of Amazon, certainly they did this with CIA in our country, the said success is coming in, and kind of changing how things do, reimagining value creation and value capture. What do you see as the impact of the, a diverse region have been in this area and the geography? Just your thoughts on what the impact's going to be. >> Well, of course, this is a virtual world and a cloud region is the virtual concept, so it's easy to say, well it shouldn't take an Amazon Web Services cloud region to transform the way in which governments work here. In practice, what AWS have seen wherever they have established cloud regions, it's a magnet for other businesses to develop around it, and it provides the reassurance that governments need to take that step forward. I don't know whether you heard Max Peterson and his presentation this morning saying he was amazed at the speed with which the entire Bahraini government system has embraced the move to the cloud which, indeed, my own government is doing as we speak. And this, I think, is going to be one of the really big, the really big impacts which will allow governments to get smaller and more efficient and more transparent >> And serve their citizens in a different way, in a better way. >> But one last thing, John. Because, you may not have heard about this is, we're hearing a lot about the shift towards renewable energy in this part of the world, and people say, why on earth would we need renewable energy which is, you know, so much of the world's petrol carbon resources are based here, but, of course, if you don't burn them, you can sell them. And that's very simple economics. The fact is that it has taken longer than other parts of the world for the transition to renewable energy, even though we have so much sunshine and at times quite a lot of wind. The government here just put out a tender for a 100 megawatt solar farm. And the driving force behind that is because AWS have said: we want to power our cloud region from renewable energy. And this is an example of industry and the big investors actually applying a positive force to speed up the direction of the government policy already. And it's something that has been well. >> It's happened fast, this private partnership public relationship, that's a success story. >> And I think there are lots of other ways we will see this happening, as I say, you can't have over 2000 people here all focusing on the cloud technology without bringing an awful lot of extra attention to and focus on what else is going on in Bahrain. >> Yeah. >> From my perspective, the Bahrain government is saying we welcome, we welcome this, this publicity, and we look forward to explaining ourselves. And I think we'll see a lot of further development in this area. >> Simon that's a great point. Sustainable energy and the trade-off between industry, private industry trying to make money, but contributing technology and a co-creation with the government. >> Yeah. >> I mean, data center, it's hot here, you need cooling, you got sun power, you see, you got to have that solution. >> Absolutely, yeah. >> You can't burn it, you can sell it, so good opportunity. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Simon Martin, ambassador, the British ambassador to the embassy here in Bahrain. Our next guest is Dalal Buhejji, who is the Chair Person for the Women in FinTech Initiative, a big growing organization here and the role of technology is about to change in a big way as Amazon Web Services Region comes online in 2019. It should spawn massive amounts of innovation, education, connections, networks. Thanks for joining us, thanks for coming on. >> Thank you, thank you for inviting me. It's a pleasure. >> So, what a great opportunity you have. FinTech's is a strategic initiative for this country. It's one of their core competencies. They see FinTech. >> Absolutely. I mean, FinTech is definitely growing in Bahrain. There's definitely a shift towards Financial Services moving towards innovation and digitalization. And, you know, we've seen women participate quite heavily when it comes to FinTech in Bahrain. And that's not something that's new to Bahrain. We've seen women that are a part of the Financial Services Sector for many decades. >> Yeah. >> So naturally, if the Financial Services Sector will innovate. >> Yeah. >> Then women will be part of this move. >> And the women movement is phenomenal. We had a breakfast we attended with Teresa Carlson. >> Yeah. >> Yesterday morning. >> Yes. >> It was absolutely a packed house. I even got kicked out of my table because, >> I wanted to participate >> (laughing) but I'm happy to give my chair up. There's so many women there. >> Yeah. >> And some Coders mostly new to tech. But this professionalization of digital >> (agrees) >> is going to impact FinTech more than ever. Take a minute to explain about the group. >> Yeah. >> The mission, what you guys are trying to do. How many people are in? What's your aspiration? >> Sure, it's a very recent and new initiative. It's a Women in FinTech Bahrain. It's a network of Professional women that are in the Financial Services Sector or that have impacted or worked in the FinTech Ecosystem. So, it's anywhere from a woman that work in the Central Bank of Bahrain, Founders of FinTech companies, people such as me, who attract inward investment and try to attract companies to set up in Bahrain. But also accelerators and incubators. >> Yeah. >> And we gather together. >> Yeah. >> And we're like, you know what? There's a lot of women in this FinTech Ecosystem and I'm sure a lot of them want to also be part of it. So, why don't we build awareness, empower more women, invite more women to come and be part of the growth of the FinTech Ecosystem in Bahrain. >> And Teresa Carlson was sharing some of her personal experience yesterday. >> Yeah. >> Unfortunately we didn't have a camera. I got audio, I'm going to put it as a podcast cause I thought it was so compelling. She said you know there's different ways to connect in and the most important thing is to be networked. >> Yes. >> And have each other's back. >> Absolutely. >> And amplify and support each other. This is normal. This is what people do. >> Absolutely. >> This is important as the growth comes. >> Yes. >> There's going to be a massive amount of opportunity coming into Bahrain. >> Absolutely. >> Big time. >> Yes, I mean, you nailed it. Like the network is actually how it's started. So we used to attend a number of events. Like the AWS Summit that we are here in today. And you know it's a bunch of women that just, you know, just happen to be part of the FinTech Ecosystem. >> Yeah. And we're like hang on, we might, there be might more women that are part of this that we're not aware of. >> Yeah. >> So why don't we make it formal in a way and call it a network where we attend more events. >> Yeah. >> Promote it more. >> Try to invite more people to attend and be part of it. So you know, not to shy away as being a women to be part of the FinTech revolution in Bahrain. >> You now one of the thing is wanted to ask you because this is a big trend that we're seeing in the United States. >> Yeah. >> And around the world. And OpenSource Software set the trend for this, is that co-creation, makes you feel part of a shared experience. >> Absolutely. >> And content and creation together makes people feel part of something. >> Yes. >> But is also creates a network effect. >> Yes. >> Network effects are some of the most important dynamics of bringing people together. >> Yes. >> But also extracting value and creating value. >> Yes. I mean, you know, once we initiated this Women in FinTech. It was two months ago, and what we did, we did this amazing picture. We took all this picture of us together and we got so much publicity out of it. So one of my colleagues visited Innovate Finance in UK, which is headed by a woman, and she also have women in FinTech a group. And we're exploring what can we do to collaborate. >> Yeah. >> I got a phone call a week ago from a VC, a Venture Capitalist who happens to be run by a woman and it's all about women entrepreneurs that seed money into FinTech companies or Startup companies that are funded by women. So it's all about the network as you said. >> Yeah and what's beautiful is that when you have this collaboration. >> Yeah. >> The people who create the value are going to shepard the extraction and sharing of that value in a community way. >> Absolutely. >> It's a community. The community is critical. Not over playing the hand or over driving. You know what I'm saying? It's like. >> Yes. >> It's a balance between community formation. >> Which is very crucial for a sector that's in it's initial stages and growing quite significantly. So you know, Bahrain has always been a Financial Services Hub. What we've seen that the sector has been digitalizing and innovating. >> Yeah. >> The last two years. So it's quite new. And you know, you need to gain as much knowledge as you want and the only way to do it is to create a network. >> Well I'm so impressed with what you're doing. >> Thank you. >> I really think Dalal of course our door is always open in Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, we'll amplify your message. >> Thank you. >> It's super important. So what is your goals and objectives? Share to the folks out there who're watching who might want to get involved. What are your goals? What are some of your objectives that you're trying to achieve. >> Right now it's initial stages. We are there just to create more awareness of women involvement in Bahrain, when it comes to FinTech, and to invite more women to participate in the growth of the FinTech Ecosystem in Bahrain. >> But you are also not limiting it to Bahrain, it's also externally. >> Of course not. >> You mentioned UK. >> Correct. Correct. Ultimately we will grow even further and have Bahrain as a FinTech hub for the region so we welcome any collaboration across borders. >> You know we were just talking about John Wood, who's a Senior Entrepreneur. Been around the block, very successful. Partnering with Teresa and Amazon at a high level. And he said, you know, what you read in the paper in the news and the media and then you come to Bahrain it's different. The ground truth here, when you look at, when you're on the ground. >> Yeah. >> Meeting people, and seeing all of this action, it's a different truth. >> Yes. >> What would you say to the folks watching here, who might watch it now live or on demand, what is the ground truth here in Bahrain? What's happening? How are women becoming the power engine? What's in general and the over all ecosystem at large? What's the story? How would you explain the phenomenon that is Bahrain? >> If you look at it beyond FinTech and look at it beyond Financial services. The involvement of women in the Private Sector is quite phenomenal in Bahrain. >> Yeah. And it goes way beyond just a few years ago. It's decades of the women involvement. We have women at Cabinet. We have women in, leading good you know, financial institutions or corporates. So the involvement of women has always been prominent in Bahrain. And we welcome and want to see more of women go towards digitalization now. >> Yeah. >> And give them the right means to be able to achieve that. >> And one of the things that's interesting is that when you're not here on the ground, you might have some old history of what the role of women here. >> Yeah. >> My 21 year old daughter Jacqueline asked me and my 17 year old daughter Caroline said. They were curios, they just don't know. They're like: "What's it like to be a woman there?" What's it like to be a woman in Bahrain? It's a very comfortable and liberal place to live in. You know, education was introduced first for women in the GCC. You see a lot of woman participate in any cross-sectors within the Private Sector. It's a very friendly place to live in. You know, and it's a great to see how knowledgeable those women are. They are hungry for knowledge. >> Yeah. >> And very impressive characters, I must say. So, you know, it's something to be, definitely to monitor and to watch very closely. Tala Fahkro came on earlier. >> Yes. >> She's the Executive Director of the EDB, Economic Development Board here in Bahrain. >> Correct. >> She said it's a learning culture. >> It is, it is. >> And it's always been a learning culture. >> Absolutely. >> And always been open and liberal, if you will. But open minded. >> Exactly. I mean, see Bahrain has always been in a very unique position, that it was a trade-hub for many years. So it's welcomed people of different cultures. >> Yeah. >> Which opened that learning culture. We're very much receptive to understanding what people from India or China or the US have to do. So it's a very as, I totally agree with Tala Fahkro and I think it is definitely a learning culture. >> Well certainly our door's open in Silicon Valley. >> Thank you. >> Thanks for spending the time. >> Thank you. >> And good luck with your opportunity. Live here in San Francisco it's theCUBE's coverage of Google Cloud and their big conference Google Next #GoogleNext18. I'm John Furrier, Dave Vellante. Our next guest is Adam Seligman, Vice President of Developer Relations at Google. Man, making it all happen, keeping the trains on time, keeping everyone motivated, welcome to theCUBE. Thanks for joining us. >> Thanks, glad to be here. >> So, first of all, take a step back, what is your job at Developer Relations? Are you herding cats, are you feeding them great code, are you overseeing a big team? Google's been very big on open-source, you've been part of the code program going back many many years. Google's always been a steward of open-source and developers are just devouring open-source in a big way right now. What's your job? >> I look after Developer Relations. There's around 20, 22 million developers in the world and we want to make every single one of them successful and build cool things, learn new technology, be part of community. That's something that's super important. I try to rally all of Google to sort of stand for developers. >> One of the big trends we're seeing now at open-source is that it's becoming such a good norm. I remember the days when I was getting into the business back in the late '80s, early '90s. Open-source, we'd kind of steal some code here and it kind of was radical. It's so normal now, and you start to see the clean, upstream etiquette, upstream projects, everyone's contributing, co-creating for a common good, monetizing downstream has been really well defined. There's some examples of probably where that could be better but for the most part, I think people are generally seeing a positive contribution. That's a community dynamic. How do you go to the next level for developers? Because this has turned out to be quite an opportunity to one: learn, meet new people, learn new skills and take advantage of some new technologies. How do you foster that community? What are you guys doing? Because no-one wants vendors to put their fingers in these upstream projects (laughs) but they're super important, they're all participating. What's the formula? How is that evolving? How do you see that? >> Google's been an open-source for maybe 20 years. Some big contributions early days, things like GCC, foundational compiler technology. And we have whole businesses that build around open-source, Chrome on the Web, Android for mobile, and now we see kubernetes in cloud and TensorFlow and AI and new things like Knative and Istio, so I think there's a course there where open-source can really shape whole ecosystems and create a lot of opportunity and a lot of innovation. And I think the challenge in all that is to do it in a really healthy, positive, community-centric way. And I think that's some real learning we've had in the last couple of years, is great leaders like Sarah Novotny have really helped guide us and her interface with open-source communities and foster the right kind of community interactions, and that's a big focus. We're trying to bring that here also. >> So, you had a keynote coming up, I know you got a hard stop and we want to try and get as many questions as we can. But I want to ask you, what are you going to be talking about at your keynote, what's the topic? 'Cos this is a, I won't say coming-out party for Google Cloud in particular, but clearly setting a couple stakes in the ground on what's going on. Enterprise focus, checking the boxes, table stakes are being met. And real tech: high performance, large-scale, really a good developer environment. What are you going to talk about at the keynote? >> Well, I think customers like HSBC and Target and others are coming to us, not for table stakes, they're coming to us for what's next. They're coming to us for massive-scale kubernetes, they're coming to us for AI. So, I think that the introductions we've had so far, things like the Cloud Services Platform, Istio 1.0, Knative, it really shows a bright future of service and AI-driven applications. What we're going to talk in the developer keynote, tomorrow, in day three, is really three themes: innovation, openness and open-source, and then that community theme that we were just talking about. And one area of innovation that we're going to talk about is Melody Meckfessel, who I think you talked to earlier, is going to talk about our approach to Cloud Build and integrated toolchains. We have a lot of technology we're going to open up in the DevOps space. But it's really a mentality, and this is the thing that I think is really needed coming to Google, is it's not just about pushing code down the waterfall to production, it's about building services for users and building services that the developers consume. And really flowing from code right out to running services, and then when you're done, the service is a turn on for everybody, you start routing traffic to it, you run canaries. So, it's a big step-change in how we think about continuous delivery and DevOps, we really want to land that in the keynote tomorrow. >> So I got to give some props to my partner, John Furrier, in 2010, John, you said, "Data is the new development kit." It was a while ago, and it's turned out, in my view anyway, to be true, but, Adam, it's also changed the profile of the developer. Data hackers, statisticians, mathematicians, artists. And so it's changed the way in which we think about a developer. I wonder, if you could talk about that, in terms of, how that's changed Developer Relations? >> Yufeng Guo is going to do a section AI in the keynote and he does these videos on YouTube that literally millions of people watch about how to get started on machine learning. And he's got a great line in there, which I think is attributed to him, that says, "AI is programming with data." And so I think we're in a world where all this data of user interactions and event streams and interactive things and mobile applications, we now have a lot of data to program the world on. And I think it's an incredible opportunity for developers. But the flip side, if we just restrict it to a couple thousand data scientists, it doesn't open up the world to everyone. So I think beyond that 20 million, what are the next 20 million we could pull in with AutoML? The next 20 million that can do SQL queries and can use BigQuery and do ML in BigQuery? So that's the vision of opening it up to more people, more developers. >> And the democratization of software, I mean, it's interesting, that's my background in software engineering, computer science, in the '80s you were called software engineering. Then it became software developer, then it became a software hacker. Now we're hearing words like software artisan. I interviewed Aparna, she said, "You don't need three PhDs, three degrees "in computer science, to do development anymore." The aperture's widening, big-time, because now craft is coming back to development. Because a lot of these abstractions, both on the business and tech side, are enabling different personas to come in. >> It's not legacy development anymore, it's heritage development, right?. (John laughs) I love that developers have the freedom to define their own titles and define their own tools they want to work with, and do a mix of the old and the new, and mix it up. So I think it's really important that we're not too narrow in how we define people and you don't have to be this tall to ride the ride, we really welcome everybody in to be a part of the community and if your entrance to ML is AutoML, but then eventually you graduate to TPUs, that's just fantastic. >> And how about crypto developers? They've exploded with innovation, what do you see in there? >> I could just go back to security, I think every company is really wrestling with security right now. How do they get two-factor everywhere? How do they stop phishing? How do they keep their employees safe? How do they have shielded VMs at every level of security? And it's a challenge to get developers to think about security sometimes. It's the operators that have to live with it, and so understanding your dependencies, way back up with developers are like, "Oh, I'll just use this library, "and I'll just use this library." How do you ensure you're using trusted dependencies back there, you don't have vulnerabilities you're introducing by taking dependencies in other codes. So I think there's a lot of education and best practice to share with developers to get them to care about security. >> My final question, I know you got to go. I just want to get it out there, years ago, when David and I used to hear on theCUBE, people come on, "We want to win the developers," no, they're not winnable. You don't win developers, you earn trust and you earn relationships and they might work with you and enjoy the services that they might provide to them. So I always kind of used to poo-poo that. But now with the Cloud you're seeing again, more range with developers. So, how do you keep developers happy? That might be a better question, because in order to earn and have a relationship with people who are going to be contributing IP and building IP, how do you keep harmonious relations? How do you keep people happy if you have things, like technical debt bothers people and people are like, "Oh, technical debt," you know, shipping codes, times. How do you think about that because keeping people happy is a broad answer, but in general, what's your view on keeping developers happy, harmonious, loving, working together, doing the things they love to do? >> It's a little different at Google, it's an interesting place, because there's never an "us and them" with developers, this is a company with tens of thousands of engineers on staff, most of the senior leadership team have an engineering background. So it's more like we live in the community of developers, my engineers are all over the world, living in developer communities. And so I think it really does matter how we show up and how we interact. But we sort of live it every day. So I don't think we have a hill to climb, so much as get to developers, I think we just have to have a really clear narrative, and then a really keen ear to listen to what they need and that's what I'm trying to orient them around. >> Listening, I think that's a great answer, listening. "What do you want?" you know, "What's important to you?" And then you have that perspective yourselves. Yeah, I mean, we're sort of a developer-centric company and I think the important thing is we put them at the center of everything we do, I use the word with my team, it's empathy. We have empathy for developers, you know, they have great jobs, great opportunities, but also great challenges, and as humans, can't we have empathy for them. >> I was hosting a panel one time, a night event, it was all out of fun, bunch of nerds on there were talking tech, getting on the hood, talking developers, all this stuff, range of questions, and one guy introduced himself as the, "I'm the CTO, I'm the Chief Toy Officer." (Adam laughs) Because we play with technology then we turn it into product. And you guys brought a lot of toys out here with Google, all this open-source. >> And then if we can amplify that for all the amazing talent that's in the world, at Google I/O, we host the developers' student clubs from Indonesia, and these young Indonesian women are teaching other college kids how to do android development. So, if we could bring that kind of magic to all of our assets, to the Cloud assets, I think there's this amazing, receptive community out there that could give us a bunch of whole new ideas that we don't just get in South of Market, San Francisco. >> It's inspiring to see people build things with open-source, pay it forward, contribute upstream, be part of a community, this is what it's all about, Developer Relations.
