(upbeat music) >> Hey everyone, Lisa Martin here with you on theCUBE Live from Mobile World Congress '23 in Barcelona. We're having a great day at the show. We hope you are too. I've got two guests here with me next. We're going to be talking about telco's 5G, all that exciting stuff. Please welcome Jason Inskeep, the AVP 5G, and Private 5G Center of Excellence at AT&T Business. And Doug Lieberman is here as well. Senior Director, Global Solutions Co-Creation Services at Dell Technologies. Guys, it's great to have you on the show, live from the show floor, talk to me about what's going on, how are you? >> Hey, thanks for having us on. It's a great show, I'm happy to be back here this year and really looking forward to the conversations that are going on and really continuing these partnerships that Dell has with companies like AT&T to truly drive the realities and the benefits of 5G. >> Absolutely, Doug, talk to me a little bit. You have an interesting title, Director of Global Solutions Co-Creation Services at Dell. Tell me a little bit about your role, what you're responsible for, and then Jason we'll have you do the same. >> Yeah, thanks for bringing that up. So, I have a very interesting role and a very exciting role at Dell because we have a unique organization that I run globally whose job it is, is to work with telcos to co-create services for enterprise and jointly go to market with those. So that basically take the combined power of AT&T and Dell and bring that to enterprise customers and other telcos so that enterprises can realize the value of, and truly leverage and harness the capabilities of 5G for private mobility and Mac and IOT and connected devices. >> Jason, let's bring you into the conversation now. You have an interesting title as well. You're with the 5G Center of Excellence at AT&T. Talk a little bit about your role and that COE. >> Yeah, thanks for having me again as well. The role with my team at AT&T is we're on the cutting edge. We're sitting in between our customers and our product houses that are working with folks at Dell, really helping putting our products together in the space of 5G. A lot of open opportunities here, a lot of things changing really fast. So my teams are off as well as putting this stuff in customers production sites it's also taking and capturing that information, working with my internal partners, both on the technology side, on the product side, and partners like Dell who are coming in helping us enabling those products and services that we can take and scale out through the different opportunities that we're seeing in this space. >> Let's double click on that partner angle, Jason, will stay with you. The 5G revolution, it's here, we are all excited about it. There's so much potential that will come from that. Let's talk about the AT&T/Dell partnership. How are you guys working together to deliver 5G globally? Jason, we'll start with you and then Doug will go to you. >> Yeah, at the core of it, when we started looking at 5G and seeing the changes that were happening, one of the biggest changes is it became software defined. So, the way we could deploy the hardware with the software becomes a whole new conversation. And what we saw coming out of that is it's not going to be a single winner and loser to really execute the way it's necessary for the experiences of tomorrow. It has to be an ecosystem that comes together. Dell creates a great opportunity for us from the hardware perspective to move those services around, to scale those services ultimately to all kinds of site types up to cities right down to small offices. And those different form factors that they bring with the software and the network pieces that we're adding on top of it help to streamline the flows and processes and really gets to that next generation that we see happening, which is this converged architecture. This meeting of network and application, creating a whole new skillset along with products. So we're at the very top we've got Dell/AT&T, at a partner level, it gets at a granular level too. The users and the developers underneath are starting to change as well, so very interesting dichotomy happening right now. >> Right, Doug, what's through Dell's lens? Tell us a little bit about the partnership and how you're working together to deliver 5G and really unlock its potential globally. >> Yeah, thank you, I'd love to bonus off of what Jason was saying, for Dell, what we look at is through the lens of an enterprise. An enterprise needs to execute their business function, their outcome, their mission that they need to operate. And so therefore they have workloads that they need to run. And 5G is an enabler for that technology, and there's lots of other enablers but the key piece is how can they get their business work done better, faster, cheaper, more efficiently, more securely? And the combination of AT&T and Dell truly is a combination that brings in a partnership that brings together a full breadth of those capabilities, with understanding what those enterprise workloads are and how they work and how an enterprise would leverage these capabilities. And then bonus on top of that and merge together with that the capabilities of AT&T. And when you look at 5G, there's a lot of people that talk about 5G being the enterprise G. And a lot of that is because of things that Jason mentioned. As we move to a disaggregated stack where you have software-defined aspects of it, and the ability in the underlying definition of what 5G in the specifications to allow much more customization. It means that enterprises now cannot just take connectivity as it is and use it however it comes but actually work with a telco and work with Dell to customize that connectivity in a way that better meets their requirements. Whether that be with slicing or private mobility or roaming between private and the public network and things like profiles and being able to have different views of how different users and devices connect to that network are all key in truly harnessing the power of that connectivity to have always on, always connected, always integrated systems from the edge, the core, to the cloud. >> Always on, always connected. That's what we all expect these days. Wherever we are in the world, whatever we're trying to do. But to be able to take advantage of all that 5G offers for all of us, telcos have to create infrastructures that can support it, let's double click guys on the infrastructure that Dell and AT&T have put in place to enable this. Jason, I want to get your perspective first and then Doug will go to you. >> Yeah, I mean, it's foundational, the things that we're trying to do and build out here and there's a lot of complexity in it now that we didn't have before because of the flexibility in it. It's one of those things like the good news in software is you can do whatever you want. The bad news in software is you can do whatever you want. Once you have that foundation there though in terms of infrastructure, which for us is really air to glass. Fiber through the spectrum on top. But underneath of that, we have the servers, we have that infrastructure where those fibers come together where that air meets the radios and so forth. And we've got to have that great foundation. So working with Dell and getting those spaces built together preps the area as needed so that there's additional place now for compute and scale at that new converged meet-me point. And that's going to be the opportunity that we're trying to think about really to get that foundation in a way that maximizes capacity and maximizes control for the customers and enterprises in particular. And more importantly, maximizes the time horizon. Because if you're putting in a foundation like this, you're not looking at two to three years. You're trying to skate beyond, skate where the puck is going, look at five, 10 years out, set that foundation. And that's what we're trying to look at with Dell. What can our network do already? Where can we push it? In return, they're going to build their solutions to help maximize that potential. >> From an infrastructure perspective, Doug, I want to understand really where Dell is really shining there but also what are some of the differentiators that Dell brings to this foundational infrastructure that to your point, is built for scale? >> Yeah, so it really all comes down to as we start to see this transition that's been happening for years, but it's accelerating because of always-connected devices and everything connected and the great proliferation of data at the edge. As we move assets from the data center and out to the edge we introduce new challenges that have to be overcome. You have things like security, automation, infrastructure cost, maintenance, day-one operations, day-two operations, all of these things are new complexities which enterprises want to enable their workloads, enable the outcomes that they want to generate. But they need to make sure that they're not taking a step backwards when it comes to things like regulations. In Europe, you've got GDPR, and in the US you've got different security regulations. No one wants to be the next front page headline about their company being attacked and having a ransomware attack. And so as we spread out these assets, what Dell is here to do is to work with AT&T and enable enterprises to effectively build their virtual enterprise around the world where those assets, whether they're at the edge or the core or in the cloud, are all managed with the same profiles and the same security features and the same automation that they have in a core data center. So my ability to deploy an edge cloud so that I can leverage AT&T's network and have end-user devices do things like gaming or connect to video services or get directed retail advertising to you are not basically introducing new vectors for security vulnerabilities into that network. And so Dell has worked really hard and is a leader in the industry in providing automation and lower cost of ownership and security for those solutions. So it's not just about putting a server out there but it's about putting an infrastructure and a cloud that is connected by AT&T's backbone and to a central core of automation management and orchestration capabilities so that I can leverage those assets securely and efficiently. >> That security element that you bring up, Doug, is so incredibly critical. We talk about it at every event, we talk about it every day. We've seen such dramatic changes in the threat landscape in the last couple of years with covid and things like that. So that security element isn't trivial, it's essential for every type of enterprise regardless of where they are. I want to talk a little bit now about best practices. And Doug, go back to you, looking at what AT&T is achieving, the 5G COE, what you're doing with Dell. From your lens and your experiences, what are some of the best practices for telcos deploying secured network and connectivity at the edge? >> Yeah, well, I think the first one is that automation and that orchestration, right? The answer is that you cannot have snowflakes at every single ag point. You need to make sure that those infrastructures are consistent and compliant with the integrations and with the policies that have been set across the network. The second thing is that you want to make sure that the connectivity is monitored and metered and managed so that we know whether, for example that endpoint is there and it's not there, if it goes offline. And ensuring the end-user experience is consistent throughout. And so what we are seeing is that it's really important that we provide an implementation where the enterprise can get a consistent and a predictable outcome for what they're trying to accomplish. What they don't want to do, what enterprises hate and is really bad for them is when they provide an inconsistent or inappropriate results to their users, to their customer base. So if your website goes offline or you're a gaming platform, if people can't get to your game you're going to lose customers, you're going to lose business you're going to have people lose faith in your network. And so our partnership with AT&T and with other telcos is about ensuring that we have all those aspects covered, day zero, day one, and day two, as well as the security aspects. And that back haul is an essential piece of that because as we get more and more devices and more and more edge devices set up, there's more sprawl. And so the complexity goes up substantially, but what really wins is when you can take that complexity and use it to your advantage and be able to manage and deploy those systems as though they were all within your virtual enterprise. >> Using complexity to your advantage. That's an interesting one, Doug, that you're bringing up. Jason, I want to know, what does that mean for you and how is AT&T leveraging complexity to its advantage for its customers all over the globe? >> You know, first thing is if you're thinking about, we're a network company we're not just a 5G company, so we're wireline, we're wireless, we're global in terms of the amount of fiber we have in the ground, the amount of in the US, domestic sailor deployments, our investments in FirstNet, is our first responder network here in the US. So we have a big portfolio inclusive of IOT. That is a global brand as well. That, if you look at it through the outside lens, that's super complex, all over the planet. So when we're talking to our customers now in this new world, which is very much, "Hey, you can do these things on your own." We go back and the bigger, obviously have the products, and the network and the tech but now that customers can take advantage of it and take things that Dell have rolled out, they need that new new age expertise. You also got the Dell expertise of building these platforms from maybe a software level, from an orchestration level, those kind of things. And at the edge that's creating a new type of person and a new type of workflow, a new type of way to respond and work. So that combination of those two is going to be that new skillset. It's in small pockets now, it's growing in how that looks because it's a little combination of both the app developer and the network developer, that's coming together. Our footprint and in terms of what we provide in there is not just 5G, it's 5G, it's fiber, it's all of those pieces together. And that's what's going to super enable that experience that Doug talked about when you're thinking about gaming or transportation, it's not just the network performance, it's the roundtrip, so we're really trying to focus on that and educate our customers in that way with the expertise that we bring over years and years of building these things. >> And if I could just jump in there. I'd like to just emphasize something Jason just said. When we look at workloads at the edge, very rarely are those workloads uniquely just an edge workload, there are components. The example I like to use is video surveillance. If you are a big box store and you have video surveillance inside your store, there is a set of workloads and outcomes you need for immediate response at that edge. You want to know if there's a safety hazard, if there is a theft or those things. Those things need to be processed real time in the store before the thief leaves the store. But then there's a set of connectivity as well where you want to process that data up in the cloud to get long-term analytics and data off of that information. What's my average store density on a Thursday afternoon in November when it's 20 degrees out. Because that would drive how many employees I have, how much inventory I carry, et cetera. And that combination is a factor that drives all the different aspects of AT&T's network. We need the connectivity in the store for the practicability and the spectrum for the cameras that talk to a central server. We need the high-speed backup and throughput in order to provide cyber recovery as well as point-of-sales services so that they can do credit card transactions flawlessly, which is using a lot of wireline services for AT&T. And together with their cloud and their other capabilities, an enterprise needs all those different aspects to work, both the edge, the core and the cloud coming together to form an outcome from one piece of input. So that one piece of input, that video stream is used in multiple different ways and because of that, that network that AT&T brings can support the end-to-end outcome and use cases for that implementation, as an example. >> That end-to-end roundtrip that you guys talked about is essential for every type of enterprise. A lot of great work that Dell and AT&T are doing together to really enable enterprises to really capitalize on all that the new technology that 5G has the potential to deliver. So I got to wrap things up, Jason, with you. From a business-customer perspective, what's next for AT&T? What can those business customers expect? >> Just continued to scaling because you're looking at a space that's evolving rapidly. It's evolving rapidly, there's a lot of opportunity. You look at the private wireless space in particular, it's nascent, but growing rapidly with the customers having their ability to do this on their own. So for us, and really where we're starting to think now is we're seeing the things move from POC, starting to move to production, customers are starting to think about what's next. For us, we're trying to skate ahead of that knowing how we built our own networks, knowing how we engaged in our own partnerships like with Dell and trying to bring that expertise back to the customer, because it isn't cookie cutter anymore. There's a lot of flexibility and each input creates a different output. So it's up to us to at least help them balance that. Define what I like to affectionately call, "Find their Goldilocks." What is that just right for them? >> Great point, Jason, it is no longer a cookie cutter. Cookie cutter isn't going to cut it. Jason, Doug, thank you so much for joining me on theCUBE today from Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. We appreciate thank you all of your insights. (upbeat jingle) >> Cameraman: Just look, Mike. >> Good afternoon everyone, and welcome back to Supercomputing. We're live here with theCUBE in Dallas. I'm joined by my cohost, David. Wonderful to be sharing the afternoon with you. And we are going to be kicking things off with a very thrilling discussion from two important thought leaders at Dell. Bhavesh and Shreya, thank you so much for being on the show. Welcome. How you doing? How does it feel to be at Supercomputing? >> Pretty good. We really enjoying the show and enjoying a lot of customer conversations ongoing. >> Yeah. Are most of your customers here? >> Yes. Most of the customers are, mostly in the Hyatt over there and a lot of discussions ongoing. >> Yeah. Must be nice to see everybody show off. Are you enjoying the show so far, Shreya? >> Yeah, I missed this for two years and so it's nice to be back and meeting people in person. >> Yeah, definitely. We all missed it. So, it's been a very exciting week for Dell. Do you want to talk about what you're most excited about in the announcement portfolio that we saw yesterday? >> Absolutely. >> Go for it, Shreya. >> Yeah, so, you know, before we get into the portfolio side of the house, you know, we really wanted to, kind of, share our thoughts, in terms of, you know, what is it that's, kind of, moving HPC and supercomputing, you know, for a long time- >> Stock trends >> For a long time HPC and supercomputing has been driven by packing the racks, you know, maximizing the performance. And as the work that Bhavesh and I have been doing over the last, you know, couple of generations, we're seeing an emerging trend and that is the thermal dissipated power is actually exploding. And so the idea of packing the racks is now turning into, how do you maximize your performance, but are able to deliver the infrastructure in that limited kilowatts per rack that you have in your data center. >> So I, it's been interesting walking around the show seeing how many businesses associated with cooling- >> Savannah: So many. >> are here. And it's funny to see, they open up the cabinet, and it's almost 19th-century-looking technology. It's pipes and pumps and- >> Savannah: And very industrial-like. >> Yeah, very, very industrial-looking. Yeah, and I think, so that's where the, the trends are more in the power and cooling. That is what everybody is trying to solve from an industry perspective. And what we did when we looked at our portfolio, what we want to bring up in this timeframe for targeting more the HPC and AI space. There are a couple of vectors we had to look at. We had to look at cooling, we had to look at power where the trends are happening. We had to look at, what are the data center needs showing up, be it in the cooler space, be it in the HPC space, be it in the large install happening out there. So, looking at those trends and then factoring in, how do you build a node out? We said, okay, we need to diversify and build out an infrastructure. And that's what me and Shreya looked into, not only looking at the silicon diversity showing up, but more looking at, okay, there is this power, there is this cooling, there is silicon diversity. Now, how do you start packing it up and bringing it to the marketplace? So, kind of, those are some of the trends that we captured. And that's what you see, kind of, in the exhibit floor today, even. >> And Dell technology supports both, liquid cooling, air cooling. Do you have a preference? Is it more just a customer-based? >> It is going to be, and Shreya can allude to it, it's more workload and application-focused. That is what we want to be thinking about. And it's not going to be siloed into, okay, is we going to be just targeting air-cooling, we wanted to target a breadth between air to liquid. And that's how we built into our portfolio when we looked at our GPUs. >> To add to that, if we look at our customer landscape, we see that there's a peak between 35 to 45 kilowatts per rack. We see another peak at 60, we see another peak at 80, and we've got selects, you know, very specialized customers above hundred kilowatts per rack. And so, if we take that 35 to 45 kilowatts per rack, you know, you can pack maybe three or four of these chassis, right? And so, to what Bhavesh is saying, we're really trying to provide the flexibility for what our customers can deliver in their data centers. Whether it be at the 35 end where air cooling may make complete sense. As you get above 45 and above, maybe that's the time to pivot to a liquid-cool solution. >> So, you said that there, so there are situations where you could have 90 kilowatts being consumed by a rack of equipment. So, I live in California where we are very, very closely attuned to things like the price for a kilowatt hour of electricity. >> Seriously. >> And I'm kind of an electric car nerd, so, for the folks who really aren't as attuned, 90 kilowatts, that's like over a hundred horsepower. So, think about a hundred horsepower worth of energy being used for compute in one of these racks. It's insane. So, we, you can kind of imagine a layperson can kind of imagine the variables that go into this equation of, you know, how do we, how do we bring the power and get the maximum bang for, per kilowatt hour. But, are there any, are there any kind of interesting odd twists in your equations that you find when you're trying to figure out. Do you have a- >> Yeah, and we, a lot of these trends when we look at it, okay, it's not, we think about it more from a power density that we want to try to go and solve. We are mindful about all the, from an energy perspective where the energy prices are moving. So, what we do is we try to be optimizing right at the node level and how we going to do our liquid-cooling and air cooled infrastructure. So, it's trying to, how do you keep a balance with it? That's what we are thinking about. And thinking about it is not just delivering or consuming the power that is maybe not needed for that particular node itself. So, that's what we are thinking about. The other way we optimize when we built this infrastructure out is we are thinking about, okay, how are we go going to deliver it at the rack level and more keeping in mind as to how this liquid-cooling plumbing will happen. Where is it coming into the data center? Is it coming in the bottom of the floor? Are we going to do it on the left hand side of your rack or the right hand side? It's a big thing. It's like it becomes, okay, yeah, it doesn't matter which side you put it on, but there is a piece of it going into our decision as to how we are going to build that, no doubt. So, there are multiple factors coming in and besides the power and cooling, which we all touched upon, But, Shreya and me also look at is where this whole GPU and accelerators are moving into. So, we're not just looking at the current set of GPUs and where they're moving from a power perspective. We are looking at this whole silicon diversity that is happening out there. So, we've been looking at multiple accelerators. There are multiple companies out there and we can tell you there'll be over three 30 to 50 silicon companies out there that we are actively engaged and looking into. So, our decision in building this particular portfolio out was being mindful about what the maturity curve is from a software point of view. From a hardware point of view and what can we deliver, what the customer really needs in it, yeah. >> It's a balancing act, yeah. >> Bhavesh: It is a balancing act. >> Let's, let's stay in that zone a little bit. What other trends, Shreya, let's go to you on this one. What other trends are you seeing in the acceleration landscape? >> Yeah, I think you know, to your point, the balancing act is actually a very interesting paradigm. One of the things that Bhavesh and I constantly think about, and we call it the Goldilocks syndrome, which is, you know, at that 90 and and a hundred, right? Density matters. >> Savannah: A lot. >> But, what we've done is we have really figured out what that optimal point is, 'cause we don't want to be the thinnest most possible. You lose a lot of power redundancy, you lose a lot of I/O capability, you lose a lot of storage capability. And so, from our portfolio perspective, we've really tried to think about the Goldilocks syndrome and where that sweet spot is. >> I love that. I love the thought of you all just standing around server racks, having a little bit of porridge and determining >> the porridge. Exactly the thickness that you want in terms of the density trade off there. Yeah, that's, I love that, though. I mean it's very digestible. Are you seeing anything else? >> No, I think that's pretty much, Shreya summed it up and we think about what we are thinking about, where the technology features are moving and what we are thinking, in terms of our portfolio, so it is, yeah. >> So, just a lesson, you know, Shreya, a lesson for us, a rudimentary lesson. You put power into a CPU or a GPU and you're getting something out and a lot of what we get out is heat. Is there a measure, is there an objective measure of efficiency in these devices that we look at? Because you could think of a 100 watt light bulb, an incandescent light bulb is going to give out a certain amount of light and a certain amount of heat. A 100 watt equivalent led, in terms of the lumens that it's putting out, in terms of light, a lot more light for the power going in, a lot less heat. We have led lights around us, thankfully, instead of incandescent lights. >> Savannah: Otherwise we would be melting. >> But, what is, when you put power into a CPU or a GPU, how do you measure that efficiency? 'Cause it's sort of funny, 'cause it's like, it's not moving, so it's not like measuring, putting power into a vehicle and measuring forward motion and heat. You're measuring this, sort of, esoteric thing, this processing thing that you can't see or touch. But, I mean, how much per watt of power, how do you, how do you measure it I guess? Help us out, from the base up understanding, 'cause people generally, most people have never been in a data center before. Maybe they've put their hand behind the fan in a personal computer or they've had a laptop feel warm on their lap. But, we're talking about massive amounts of heat being generated. Can you, kind of, explain the fundamentals of that? >> So, the way we think about it is, you know, there's a performance per dollar metric. There's a performance per dollar per watt metric and that's where the power kind of comes in. But, on the flip side, we have something called PUE, power utilization efficiency from a data center aspect. And so, we try to marry up those concepts together and really try to find that sweet spot. >> Is there anything in the way of harvesting that heat to do other worthwhile work, I mean? >> Yes. >> You know, it's like, hey, everybody that works in the data center, you all have your own personal shower now, water heated. >> Recirculating, too. >> Courtesy of Intel AMD. >> Or a heated swimming pool. >> Right, a heated swimming pool. >> I like the pool. >> So, that's the circulation of, or recycling of that thermal heat that you're talking about, absolutely. And we see that our customers in the, you know, in the Europe region, actually a lot more advanced in terms of taking that power and doing something that's valuable with it, right? >> Cooking croissant and, and making lattes, probably right? >> (laughing) Or heating your home. >> Makes me want to go on >> vacation, a pool, croissants. >> That would be a good use. But, do you, it's more on the PUE aspect of it. It's more thinking about how are we more energy efficient in our design, even, so we are more thinking about what's the best efficiency we can get, but what's the amount of heat capture we can get? Are we just kind of wasting any heat out there? So, that's always the goal when designing these particular platforms, so that's something that we had kept in mind with a lot of our power and cooling experts within Dell. When thinking about, okay, is it, how much can we get, can we capture? If we are not capturing anything, then what are we, kind of, recirculating it back in order to get much better efficiency when we think about it at a rack level and for the other equipment which is going to be purely air-cooled out there and what can we do about it, so. >> Do you think both of these technologies are going to continue to work in tandem, air cooling and liquid cooling? Yeah, so we're not going to see- >> Yeah, we don't, kind of, when we think about our portfolio and what we see the trends moving in the future, I think so, air-cooling is definitely going to be there. There'll be a huge amount of usage for customers looking into air-cooling. Air-cooling is not going to go away. Liquid-cooling is definitely something that a lot of customers are looking into adopting. PUE become the bigger factor for it. How much can I heat capture with it? That's a bigger equation that is coming into the picture. And that's where we said, okay, we have a transition happening. And that's what you see in our portfolio now. >> Yeah, Intel is, Intel, excuse me, Dell is agnostic when it comes to things like Intel, AMD, Broadcom, Nvidia. So, you can look at this landscape and I think make a, you know, make a fair judgment. When we talk about GPU versus CPU, in terms of efficiency, do you see that as something that will live on into the future for some applications? Meaning look, GPU is the answer or is it simply a question of leveraging what we think of as CPU cores differently? Is this going to be, is this going to ebb and flow back and forth? Shreya, are things going to change? 'Cause right now, a lot of what's announced recently, in the high performance computer area, leverages GPUs. But, we're right in the season of AMD and Intel coming out with NextGen processor architectures. >> Savannah: Great point. >> Shreya: Yeah >> Any thoughts? >> Yeah, so what I'll tell you is that it is all application dependent. If you rewind, you know, a couple of generations you'll see that the journey for GPU just started, right? And so there is an ROI, a minimum threshold ROI that customers have to realize in order to move their workloads from CPU-based to GPU-based. As the technology evolves and matures, you'll have more and more applications that will fit within that bucket. Does that mean that everything will fit in that bucket? I don't believe so, but as, you know, the technology will continue to mature on the CPU side, but also on the GPU side. And so, depending on where the customer is in their journey, it's the same for air versus liquid. Liquid is not an if, but it's a when. And when the environment, the data center environment is ready to support that, and when you have that ROI that goes with it is when it makes sense to transition to one way or the other. >> That's awesome. All right, last question for you both in a succinct phrase, if possible, I won't character count. What do you hope that we get to talk about next year when we have you back on theCUBE? Shreya, we'll start with you. >> Ooh, that's a good one. I'm going to let Bhavesh go first. >> Savannah: Go for it. >> (laughs) >> What do you think, Bhavesh? Next year, I think so, what you'll see more, because I'm in the CTI group, more talking about where cache coherency is moving. I've had the pleasure of spending this week with Lisa Martin and John Furrier. Thank you both so much for hanging out, for inviting me into the CUBE family. It's our first show together, it's been wonderful. >> Thank you. >> You nailed it. >> Oh thanks, sweetheart. >> Great job. Great job team, well done. Free wall to wall coverage, it's what we do. We stay till everyone else-- >> Savannah: 100 percent. >> Everyone else leaves, till they pull the plug. >> Lisa: Till they turn the lights out. We're still there. >> Literally. >> Literally last night. >> Still broadcasting. >> Whatever takes to get the stories and get 'em out there at scale. >> Yeah. >> Great time. >> 33. 33 different segments too. Very impressive. John, I'm curious, you're a trend watcher and you've been at every single KubeCon. >> Yep. >> What are the trends this year? Give us the breakdown. >> I think CNCF does this, it's a hard job to balance all the stakeholders. So one, congratulations to the CNCF for another great KubeCon and CloudNativeCon. It is really hard to balance bringing in the experts who, as time goes by, seven years we've been all of, as you said, you get experts, you get seniority, and people who can be mentors, 60% new people. You have vendors who are sponsoring and there's always people complaining and bitching and moaning. They want this, they want that. It's always hard and they always do a good job of balancing it. We're lucky that we get to scale the stories with CUBE and that's been great. We had some great stories here, but it's a great community and again, they're inclusive. As I've said before, we've talked about it. This year though is an inflection point in my opinion, because you're seeing the developer ecosystem growing so fast. It's global. You're seeing events pop up, you're seeing derivative events. CNCF is at the center point and they have to maintain the culture of developer experts, maintainers, while balancing the newbies. And that's going to be >> Savannah: Mm-hmm. really hard. And they've done a great job. We had a great conversation with them. So great job. And I think it's going to continue. I think the attendance metric is a little bit of a false positive. There's a lot of online people who didn't come to Detroit this year. And I think maybe the combination of the venue, the city, or just Covid preferences may not look good on paper, on the numbers 'cause it's not a major step up in attendance. It's still bigger, but the community, I think, is going to continue to grow. I'm bullish on it. >> Yeah, I mean at least we did see double the number of people that we had in Los Angeles. Very curious. I think Amsterdam, where we'll be next with CNCF in the spring, in April. I think that's actually going to be a better pulse check. We'll be in Europe, we'll see what's going on. >> John: Totally. >> I mean, who doesn't like Amsterdam in the springtime? Lisa, what have been some of your observations? >> Oh, so many observations. The evolution of the conference, the hallway track conversations really shifting towards adjusting to the enterprise. The enterprise momentum that we saw here as well. We had on the show, Ford. >> Savannah: Yes. We had MassMutual, we had ING, that was today. Home Depot is here. We are seeing all these big companies that we know and love, become software companies right before our eyes. >> Yeah. Well, and I think we forget that software powers our entire world. And so of course they're going to have to be here. So much running on Kubernetes. It's on-prem, it's at the edge, it's everywhere. It's exciting. Woo, I'm excited. John, what do you think is the number one story? This is your question. I love asking you this question. What is the number one story out KubeCon? >> Well, I think the top story is a combination of two things. One is the evolution of Cloud Native. We're starting to see web assembly. That's a big hyped up area. It got a lot of attention. >> Savannah: Yeah. That's kind of teething out the future. >> Savannah: Rightfully so. The future of this kind of lightweight. You got the heavy duty VMs, you got Kubernetes and containers, and now this web assembly, shows a trajectory of apps, server-like environment. And then the big story is security. Software supply chain is, to me, was the number one consistent theme. At almost all the interviews, in the containers, and the workflows, >> Savannah: Very hot. software supply chain is real. The CD Foundation mentioned >> Savannah: Mm-hmm. >> they had 16,000 vulnerabilities identified in their code base. They were going to automate that. So again, >> Savannah: That was wild. >> That's the top story. The growth of open source exposes potential vulnerabilities with security. So software supply chain gets my vote. >> Did you hear anything that surprised you? You guys did this great preview of what you thought we were going to hear and see and feel and touch at KubeCon, CloudNativeCon 2022. You talked about, for example, the, you know, healthcare financial services being early adopters of this. Anything surprise either one of you in terms of what you predicted versus what we saw? Savannah, let's start with you. >> You know what really surprised me, and this is ironic, so I'm a community gal by trade. But I was really just impressed by the energy that everyone brought here and the desire to help. The thing about the open source community that always strikes me is, I mean 187 different countries participating. You've got, I believe it's something like 175,000 people contributing to the 140 projects plus that CNCF is working on. But that culture of collaboration extends far beyond just the CNCF projects. Everyone here is keen to help each other. We had the conversation just before about the teaching and the learnings that are going on here. They brought in Detroit's students to come and learn, which is just the most heartwarming story out of this entire thing. And I think it's just the authenticity of everyone in this community and their passion. Even though I know it's here, it still surprises me to see it in the flesh. Especially in a place like Detroit. >> It's nice. >> Yeah. >> It's so nice to see it. And you bring up a good point. It's very authentic. >> Savannah: It's super authentic. >> I mean, what surprised me is one, the Wasm, or web assembly. I didn't see that coming at the scale of the conversation. It sucked a lot of options out of the room in my opinion, still hyped up. But this looks like it's got a good trajectory. I like that. The other thing that surprised me that was a learning was my interview with Solo.io, Idit, and Brian Gracely, because he's a CUBE alumni and former host of theCUBE, and analyst at Wikibon, was how their go-to-market was an example of a modern company in Covid with a clean sheet of paper and smart people, they're just doing things different. They're in Slack with their customers. And I walked away with, "Wow that's like a playbook that's not, was never, in the go-to-market VC-backed company playbook." I thought that was, for me, a personal walk away saying that's important. I like how they did that. And there's a lot of companies I think could learn from that. Especially as the recession comes where partnering with customers has always been a top priority. And how they did that was very clever, very effective, very efficient. So I walked away with that saying, "I think that's going to be a standard." So that was a pleasant surprise. >> That was a great surprise. Also, that's a female-founded company, which is obviously not super common. And the growth that they've experienced, to your point, really being catalyzed by Covid, is incredibly impressive. I mean they have some massive brand name customers, Amex, BMW for example. >> Savannah: Yeah. >> Great point. >> And I interviewed her years ago and I remember saying to myself, "Wow, she's impressive." I liked her. She's a player. A player for sure. And she's got confidence. Even on the interview she said, "We're just better, we have better product." And I just like the point of view. Very customer-focused but confident. And I just took, that's again, a great company. And again, I'm not surprised that Brian Gracely left Red Hat to go work there. So yeah, great, great call there. And of course other things that weren't surprising that I predicted, Red Hat continued to invest. They continue to bring people on theCUBE, they support theCUBE but more importantly they have a good strategy. They're in that multicloud positioning. They're going to have an opportunity to get a bite at the apple. And I what I call the supercloud. As enterprises try to go and be mainstream, Cloud Native, they're going to need some help. And Red Hat is always has the large enterprise customers. >> Savannah: What surprised you, Lisa? >> Oh my gosh, so many things. I think some of the memorable conversations that we had. I love talking with some of the enterprises that we mentioned, ING Bank for example. You know, or institutions that have been around for 100 plus years. >> Savannah: Oh, yeah. To see not only how much they've innovated and stayed relevant to meet the demands of the consumer, which are only increasing, but they're doing so while fostering a culture of innovation and a culture that allows these technology leaders to really grow within the organization. That was a really refreshing conversation that I think we had. 'Cause you can kind of >> Savannah: Absolutely. think about these old stodgy companies. Nah, of course they're going to digitize. >> Thinking about working for the bank, I think it's boring. >> Right? >> Yeah. And they were talking about, in fact, those great t-shirts that they had on, >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. were all about getting more people to understand how fun it is to work in tech for ING Bank in different industries. You don't just have to work for the big tech companies to be doing really cool stuff in technology. >> What I really liked about this show is we had two female hosts. >> Savannah: Yeah. >> How about that? Come on. >> Hey, well done, well done on your recruitment there, champ. >> Yes, thank you boss. (John laughs) >> And not to mention we have a really all-star production team. I do just want to give them a little shout out. To all the wonderful folks behind the lines here. (people clapping) >> John: Brendan. Good job. >> Yeah. I do, I really want to talk about this because I think it's really special. It's an ethos and some magic has happened here. Let's talk about Detroit. Let's talk about what it means to be here. We saw so many, and I can't stress this enough, but I think it really matters. There was a commitment to celebrating place here. Lisa, did you notice this too? >> Absolutely. And it surprised me because we just don't see that at conferences. >> Yeah. We're so used to going to the same places. >> Right. >> Vegas. Vegas, Vegas. More Vegas. >> Your tone-- >> San Francisco >> (both laugh) sums up my feelings. Yes. >> Right? >> Yeah. And, well, it's almost robotic but, and the fact that we're like, oh Detroit, really? But there was so much love for this city and recognizing and supporting its residents that we just don't see at conferences. You uncovered a lot of that with your swag-savvy segments, >> Savannah: Yeah. >> And you got more of that to talk about today. >> Don't worry, it's coming. Yeah. (laughs) >> What about you? Have you enjoyed Detroit? I know you hadn't been here in a long time, when we did our intro session. >> I think it's a bold move for the CNCF to come here and celebrate. What they did, from teaching the kids in the city some tech, they had a session. I thought that was good. >> Savannah: Loved that. I think it was a risky move because a lot of people, like, weren't sure if they were going to fly to Detroit. So some say it might impact the attendance. I thought they did a good job. Their theme, Road Ahead. Nice tie in. >> Savannah: Yeah. And so I think I enjoyed Detroit. The weather was great. It didn't rain. Nice breeze outside. >> Yeah. >> The weather was great, the restaurants are phenomenal. So Detroit's a good city. I missed some hockey games. I'd love to see the Red Wings play. Missed that game. But we always come back. >> I think it's really special. I mean, every time I talked to a company about their swag, that had sourced it locally, there was a real reason for this story. I mean even with Kasten in that last segment when I noticed that they had done Carhartt beanies, Carhartt being a Michigan company. They said, "I'm so glad you noticed. That's why we did it." And I think that type of, the community commitment to place, it all comes back to community. One of the bigger themes of the show. But that passion and that support, we need more of that. >> Lisa: Yeah. >> And the thing about the guests we've had this past three days have been phenomenal. We had a diverse set of companies, individuals come on theCUBE, you know, from Scott Johnston at Docker. A really one on one. We had a great intense conversation. >> Savannah: Great way to kick it off. >> We shared a lot of inside baseball, about Docker, super important company. You know, impressed with companies like Platform9 it's been around since the OpenStack days who are now in a relevant position. Rafi Systems, hot startup, they don't have a lot of resources, a lot of guerilla marketing going on. So I love to see the mix of startups really contributing. The big players are here. So it's a real great mix of companies. And I thought the interviews were phenomenal, like you said, Ford. We had, Kubia launched on theCUBE. >> Savannah: Yes. >> That's-- >> We snooped the location for KubeCon North America. >> You did? >> Chicago, everyone. In case you missed it, Bianca was nice enough to share that with us. >> We had Sarbjeet Johal, CUBE analyst came on, Keith Townsend, yesterday with you guys. >> We had like analyst speed dating last night. (all laugh) >> How'd that go? (laughs) >> It was actually great. One of the things that they-- >> Did they hug and kiss at the end? >> Here's the funny thing is that they were debating the size of the CNC app. One thinks it's too big, one thinks it's too small. And I thought, is John Goldilocks? (John laughs) >> Savannah: Yeah. >> What is John going to think about that? >> Well I loved that segment. I thought, 'cause Keith and Sarbjeet argue with each other on Twitter all the time. And I heard Keith say before, he went, "Yeah let's have it out on theCUBE." We got a lot of CNCF projects and one of the ways to catch the attention of people walking the show floor is to have interesting swag. So we looked for the most unique swag on Wednesday and I hadn't found this yet, but I do just want to bring it up. Oops, I think I might have just dropped it. This is cute. Is, most random swag of the entire show goes to this toothbrush. I don't really have more in terms of the pitch there because this is just random. (Lisa laughs) >> But so, everyone needs that. >> John: So what's their tagline? >> And you forget these. >> Yeah, so the idea was to brush your cloud bills. So I think they're reducing the cost of-- >> Kind of a hygiene angle. >> Yeah, yeah. Very much a hygiene angle, which I found a little ironic in this crowd to be completely honest with you. >> John: Don't leave the lights on theCUBE. That's what they say. >> Yeah. >> I mean we are theCUBE so it would be unjust of me not to show you a Rubik's cube. This is actually one of those speed cubes. I'm not going to be able to solve this for you with one hand on camera, but apparently someone did it in 17 seconds at the booth. Knowing this audience, not surprising to me at all. Today we are, and yesterday, was the t-shirt contest. Best t-shirt contest. Today we really dove into the socks. So this is, I noticed this trend at KubeCon in Los Angeles last year. Lots of different socks, clouds obviously a theme for the cloud. I'm just going to lay these out. Lots of gamers in the house. Not surprising. Here on this one. >> John: Level up. >> Got to level up. I love these 'cause they say, "It's not a bug." And anyone who's coded has obviously had to deal with that. We've got, so Star Wars is a huge theme here. But if we're going to narrow it down to some champions, I love these little bee elephants from Raft. And when I went up to these guys, I actually probably would've called these my personal winner. They said, again, so community focused and humble here at CNCF, they said that Wiz was actually the champion according to the community. These unicorn socks are pretty excellent. And I have to say the branding is flawless. So we'll go ahead and give Wiz the win on the best sock contest. >> John: For the win. >> Yeah, Wiz for the win. However, the thing that I am probably going to use the most is this really dope Detroit snapback from Kasten. So I'm going to be rocking this from now on for the rest of the segment as well. (John laughs) >> So what are we expecting between now and KubeCon in Amsterdam? >> Well, I think it's going to be great to see how they, the European side, it's a chill show. It's great. Brings in the European audience from the global perspective. I always love the EU shows because one, it's a great destination. Amsterdam's going to be a great location. >> Savannah: I'm pumped. >> The American crowd loves going over there. All the event cities that they choose are always awesome. I missed Valencia cause I got Covid. I'm really bummed about that. But I love the European shows. It's just a little bit, it's high intensity, but it's the European chill. And they mentioned that they had 11,000 people who have taken their Kubernetes course in that first year. If that's a benchmark and an indicator, we've got the veteran players here. But I do think that, I personally think that the hype of Kubernetes has actually preceded adoption. If you look at the data and now we're finally tipping over. I think the last two years we were on the fringe and right now we're there. It's great. Breaking Analysis: re:Invent 2019...of Transformation & NextGen Cloud

Now, here's your host, Dave Vellante. >> Hello, everyone, and welcome to this week's episode of theCUBE Insights, powered by ETR. In this Breaking Analysis, I want to do a quasi post-mortem on AWS re:Invent, and put the company's prospects into context using some ETR spending data. First I want to try to summarize some of the high-level things that we heard at the event. I won't go into all the announcements in any kind of great detail, there's a lot that's been written out there on what was announced, but I will touch on a few of the items that I felt were noteworthy and try to give you some of the main themes. I then want to dig into some of the spending data and share with you what's happening from a buyer's perspective in the context of budgets, and we'll specifically focus on AWS's business lines. And then I'm going to bring my colleague Stu Miniman into the conversation, and we're going to talk about AWS's hybrid strategy in some detail, and then we're going to wrap. So, the first thing that I want to do is give you a brief snapshot of the re:Invent takeaways, and I'll try to give you some commentary that you might not have heard coming out of the show. So, to summarize re:Invent, AWS is not being on rinsing and repeating, they have this culture of raising the bar, but one thing that doesn't change is this shock and awe that they do of announcements, it comes out each year, and it's obvious. It's always a big theme, and this year Andy Jassy really wanted to underscore the company's feature and functional lead relative to some of the other cloud providers. Now the overarching theme that Jassy brought home in his keynote this year is that the cloud is enabling transformation. Not just teeny, incremental improvement, he's talking about transformation that has to start at the very top of the organization, so it's somewhat a challenge and an appeal to enterprises, generally versus what is often a message to startups at re:Invent. And he was specifically talking to the c-suite here. Jassy didn't say this, but let me paraphrase something that John Furrier said in his analysis on theCUBE. He said if you're not born in the cloud, you basically better find the religion and get reborn, or you're going to be out of business. Now, one of the other big trends that we saw this year at re:Invent, and it's starting to come into focus, is that AWS is increasingly leveraging its acquisition of Annapurna with these new chip sets that give it higher performance and better cost structures and utilization than it can with merchant silicon, and specifically Intel. And here's what I'll say about that. AWS is one of the largest, if not the largest customer of Intel's in the world. But here's the thing, Intel wants a level playing field. We've seen this over the years, where it's in Intel's best interest to have that level playing field as much as possible, in its customer base. You saw it in PCs, in servers, and now you're seeing it in cloud. The more balanced the customer base is, the better it is for Intel because no one customer can exert undue influence and control over Intel. Intel's a consummate arms dealer, and so from AWS's perspective it makes sense to add capabilities and innovate, and vertically integrate in a way that can drive proprietary advantage that they can't necessarily get from Intel, and drive down costs. So that's kind of what's happening here. The other big thing we saw is latency, what Pat Gelsinger calls the law of physics. Well a few years ago, AWS, they wouldn't even acknowledge on-prem workloads, and Stu and I are going to talk about that, but clearly sees hybrid as an opportunity now. I'm going to talk more on detail and drill into this with Stu, but a big theme of the event was moving Outposts closer to on-prem workloads, that aren't going to be moving into the cloud anytime soon. And then also the edge, as well as, for instance, Amazon's Wavelength announcement that puts Outposts into 5G networks at major carriers. Now another takeaway is that AWS is unequivocal about the right tool for the right job, and you see this really prominently in database, where I've counted at least 10 purpose-built databases in the portfolio. AWS took some really indirect shots at Oracle, maybe even direct shots at Oracle, which, Oracle treats Oracle Database as a hammer, and every opportunity as a nail, antithetical to AWS's philosophy. Now there were a ton of announcements around AI and specifically the SageMaker IDE, specifically Studio, SageMaker Studio, which stood out as a way to simplify machine intelligence. Now this approach addresses the skillset problem. What I mean by that is, the lack of data scientists to leverage AI. But one of the things that we're kind of watching here is, it's going to be interesting to see if it exacerbates the AI black box issue. Making the logic behind the machines' outcomes less transparent. Now, all of this builds up to what we've been calling next-gen cloud, and we're entering a new era that goes well beyond infrastructure as a service, and lift and shift workloads. And it really ties back to Jassy's theme of transformation, where analytics approaches new computing models, like serverless, which are fundamental now, as is security, and a topic that we've addressed in detail in prior Breaking Analysis segments. AWS even made an announcement around quantum computing as a service, they call it Braket. So those are some of the things that we were watching. All right, now let's pivot and look at some of the data. Here's a reminder of the macro financials for AWS, we get some decent data around AWS financials, and this chart, I've showed before, but it's AWS's absolute revenue and quarterly revenue year on year with the growth rates. It's very large and it's growing, that's the bottom line, but growth is slowing to 35% last quarter as you can see. But to iterate, or reiterate, we're looking at a roughly 36 billion dollar company, growing at 35% a year, and you don't see that often. And so, this market, it still has a long way to go. Now let's look at some of the ETR tactical data on spending. Now remember, spending attentions according to ETR are reverting to pre-2018 levels, and are beginning to show signs of moderation. This chart shows spending momentum based on what ETR calls net score, and that represents the net percentage of customers that are spending more on a particular platform. Now, here's what's really interesting about this chart. It show the net scores for AWS across a number of the company's markets, comparing the gray, which is October '18 survey, with the blue, July '19, and the yellow, October '19. And you can see that workspaces, machine learning and AI, cloud overall, analytic databases, they're all either up or holding the same levels as a year ago, so you see AWS is bucking the trend, and even though spending on containers appears to be a little less than last year, it's holding firm from the July survey, so my point is that AWS is really bucking that trend from the overall market, and is continuing to do very very well. Now this next slide takes the same segments, and looks at what ETR refers to as market share, which is a measure of pervasiveness in the survey. So as you can see, AWS is gaining in virtually all of its segments. So even though spending overall is softening, AWS in the marketplace, AWS is doing a much better job than its peers on balance. Now, the other thing I want to address is this notion of repatriation. I get this a lot, as I'm sure do other analysts. People say to me, "Dave, you should really look into this. "We hear from a lot of customers "that they moved to the cloud, "now they're moving workloads back on-prem "because the cloud is so expensive." Okay, so they say "You should look into this." So this next chart really does look into this. What the chart shows is across those same offerings from AWS, so the same services, the percent of customers that are replacing AWS, so I'm using this as a proxy for repatriation. Look at the numbers, they're low single digits. You see traditional enterprise vendors' overall business growing in the low single digits, or shrinking. AWS's defections are in the low single digits, so, okay, now look at this next chart. What about adoptions, if the cloud is slowing down, you'd expect a slowdown in new adoptions. What this data shows is the percent of customers that are responding, that they're adding AWS in these segments, so there's a new platform. So look, across the board, you're seeing increases of most of AWS's market segments. Notably, in respondents citing AWS overall at the very rightmost bars, you are admittedly seeing some moderation relative to last year. So that's a bit of a concern and clearly something to watch, but as I showed you earlier, AWS overall, that same category, is holding firm, because existing customers are spending more. All right, so that's the data portion of the conversation, hopefully we put that repatriation stuff to bed, and I now want to bring in Stu Miniman to the conversation, and we're going to talk more about multicloud, hybrid, on-prem, we'll talk about Outposts specifically, so Stu, welcome, thank you very much for coming on. >> Thanks Dave, glad to be here with you. >> All right, so let's talk about, let's start with multicloud, and dig into the role of Kubernetes a little bit, let me sort of comment on how I think AWS looks at multicloud. I think they look at multicloud as using multiple public clouds, and they look at on-prem as hybrid. Your thoughts on AWS's perspective on multicloud, and what's going on in the market. >> Yeah, and first of all, Dave, I'll step back for a second, you talked about how Amazon has for years had shots against Oracle. The one that Amazon actually was taking some shots at this year was Microsoft, so, not only did they talk about Oracle, they talked about customers looking to flee their SQL customers, and I lead into that because when you talk about hybrid cloud, Dave, if you talked to any analyst over the last three, four years and you say "Okay, what vendor is best position in hybrid, "which cloud provider has the "best solution for hybrid cloud?" Microsoft is the one that we'd say, because their strong domain in the enterprise, of course with Windows, the move to Office 365, the clear number two player in Azure, and they've had Azure Stack for a number of years, and they had Azure Pack before that, they'd had a number of offerings, they just announced this year Azure Arc, so three, we've had at least three generations of hybrid multicloud solutions from Microsoft, Amazon has a different positioning. As we've talked about for years, Dave, not only doesn't Amazon like to use the words hybrid or multicloud, for the most part, but they do have a different viewpoint. So the partnership with VMware expanded what they're doing on hybrid, and while Andy Jassy, he at least acknowledges that multicloud is a thing, when he sat down with John Furrier ahead of the show, he said "Well, there might be reasons why customers "either there's a group inside "that has a service that they want, "that they might want to do a secondary cloud, "or if I'm concerned that I might fall out of love "with this primary supplier I have, "I might need a second one." Andy said in not so, just exactly, said "Look, we understand multicloud is a thing." Now, architecturally, Amazon's positioning on this is that you should use Amazon, and they should be the center of what you're doing. You talked a lot about Outposts, Outposts, critical to what Amazon is doing in this environment. >> And we're going to talk about that, but you're right, Amazon doesn't like to talk about multicloud as a term, however, and by the way, they say that multicloud is more expensive, less secure, more complicated, more costly, and probably true, but you're right, they are acknowledging at least, and I would predict just as hybrid, which we want to talk about right now, they'll be talking about, they'll be participating in some way, shape, or form, but before we go to multicloud, or hybrid, what about Kubernetes? >> So, right, first of all, we've been at the KubeCon show for years, we've watching Kubernetes since the early days. Kubernetes is not a magic layer, it does not automatically say "Hey, I've got my application, I can move it willy-nilly." Data gravity's really important, how I architect my microservices solution absolutely is hugely important. When I talk to my friends in the app dev world, Dave, hybrid is the way they are building things a lot, if I took some big monolithic application, and I start pulling it apart, if I have that data warehouse or data store in my data center, I can't just migrate that to the cloud, David Floyer for years has been talking about the cost of migration, so microservice architecture's the way most customers are building, a hybrid environment often is there. Multicloud, we're not doing cloud bursting, we're not just saying "Oh hey, I woke up today, "and cloud A is cheaper than cloud B, "let me move my workload." Absolutely, I had a great conversation with a good Amazon customer that said two years ago, when they deployed Kubernetes, they did it on Azure. You want to know why, the Azure solution was more mature and they were doing Azure, they were doing things there, but as Amazon fully embraced Kubernetes, not just sitting on top of their solution, but launched the service, which is EKS, they looked at it, and they took an application, and they migrated it from Azure to Amazon. Now, migrating it, there's the underlying services and everybody does things a little bit different. If you look at some of the tooling out there, great one to look at is HashiCorp has some great tooling that can span across multiple clouds, but if you look at how they deploy, to Azure, to Google, to AWS, it's different, so you got to have different code, there's different skillsets, it's not a utility and just generic compute and storage and networking underneath, you need to have specific skills there, so Kubernetes, absolutely when I've been talking to users for the last few years and saying "Why are you using Kubernetes?" The answer is "I need that eject lever, "so that if I want to leave AWS with an application, "I can do that, and it's not press a button and it's easy, "that easy, but I know that I can move that, "'cause underneath the pods, and the containers, "and all those pieces, the core building blocks "are the same, I will have to do some reconfiguration," as we know with the migration, usually I can get 80 to 90 percent of the way there, and then I need to make the last minute-- >> So it's a viable hedge on your AWS strategy, okay. >> Absolutely, and I've talked to lots of customers, Amazon shows that most cloud Kubernetes solutions out there are running on Amazon, and when I go talk to customers, absolutely, a lot of the customers that are doing Kubernetes in the public cloud are doing that on Amazon, and one of the main reasons they're using it is in case they do want to, as a hedge against being all-in on Amazon. >> All right, let's talk about Outposts, specifically as part of Amazon's hybrid strategy, and now their edge strategy as well. >> Right, so Azure Stack, I mentioned earlier from Microsoft has been out there for a few years. It has not been doing phenomenally well, when I was at Microsoft Ignite this year, I heard basically certain government agencies and service providers are using it and basically acting, delivering Azure as a service, but, Azure Stack is basically an availability zone in my data center, and Amazon looked at this and says "That's not how we're going to build this." Outposts is an extension of your local region, so, while people look at the box and they say, I took a picture of the box and Shu was like, "Hey, whose server and what networking card, "and the chipset and everything," I said "Hold on a second. "You might look at that box, "and you might be able to open the door, "but Amazon is going to deploy that, "they're going to manage that, "really you should put a curtain in front of it "and say pay no attention to what's behind here, "because this is Amazon gear, it's an Amazon "as a service in your data center, "and there are only a few handful of services "that are going to be there at first." If I want to even use S3, day one, the Amazon native services, you're going to just use S3 in your local region. Well, what if I need special latency? Well, Amazon's going to look at that, and see what's available, so, it is Amazon hardware, the Amazon software, the Amazon control plane, reaching into that data center, and very scalable, it's, Amazon says over time it should be able to go to thousands of racks if you need, so absolutely that cloud experience closer to my environment, but where I need certain applications, certain latency, certain pieces of data that I need to store there. >> And we've seen Amazon dip its toe into the hybrid on-prem market with Snowball and Greengrass and stuff like that before, but this is a much bigger commitment, one might even say capitulation, to hybrid. >> Well, right, and the reason why I even say, this is hybrid, but it's all Amazon, it is not "Take my private cloud and my public cloud "and tie 'em together," it's not, "I've taken cloud to customer" or IBM solution, where they're saying "I'm going to put a rack here "and a rack there, and it's all going to work the same." It is the same hardware and software, but it is not all of the pieces-- >> VMware and Outposts is hybrid. >> Really interesting, Dave, as the native AWS solution is announced first here in 2019, and the VMware solution on Outposts isn't going to be available until 2020. Draw what you will, it's been a strong partnership, there are exabytes of data in the VMware cloud on AWS now, but yeah, it's a little bit of a-- >> Quid pro quo, I think is what you call that. >> Well I'd say Amazon is definitely, "We're going to encroach a little bit on your business, "and we're going to woke you into our environment, too." >> Okay, let's talk about the edge, and Outposts at the edge, they announced Wavelength, which is essentially taking Outposts and putting it into 5G networks at carriers. >> Yeah, so Outposts is this building block, and what Amazon did is they said, "This is pretty cool, "we actually have our environment "and we can do other things with it." So sometimes they're just taking, pretty much that same block, and using it for another service, so one that you didn't mention was AWS Local Zones. So it is not a whole new availability zone, but it is basically extending the cloud, multi-tenant, the first one is done for the TME market in Los Angeles, and you expect, how does Amazon get lower latency and get closer, and get specialized services, local zones are how they're going to do this. The Wavelength solution is something they built specifically for the telco environment. I actually got to sit down with Verizon, this was at least an 18 month integration, anybody that's worked in the telco space knows that it's usually not standard gear, there's NEBB certification, there's all these things, it's often even DC power, so, it is leveraging Outposts, but it is not them rolling the same thing into Verizon that they did in their environments. Similar how they're going to manage it, but as you said, it's going to push to the telco edge and in a partnership with Verizon, Vodafone, SK, Telecom, and some others that will be rolling out across the globe, they are going to have that 5G offering and this little bit, I actually buy it from Amazon, but you still buy the 5G from your local carrier. It's going to roll out in Chicago first, and enabling all of those edge applications. >> Well what I like about the Amazon strategy at the edge is, and I've said this before, on a number of occasions on theCUBE Breaking Analysis, they're taking programmable infrastructure to the edge, the edge will be won by developers in my view, and Amazon obviously has got great developer traction, I don't see that same developer traction at HPE, even Dell EMC proper, even within VMware, and now they've got Pivotal, they've got an opportunity there, but they've really got a long way to go in terms of appealing to developers, whereas Amazon I think is there, obviously, today. >> Yeah, absolutely true, Dave. When we first started going to the show seven years ago, it was very much the hoodie crowd, and all of those cloud-native, now, as you said, it's those companies that are trying to become born again in the cloud, and do these environments, because I had a great conversation with Andy Jassy on air, Dave, and I said "Do we just shrink wrap solutions "and make it easy for the enterprise to deploy, "or are we doing the enterprise a disservice?" Because if you are truly going to thrive and survive in the cloud-native era, you've got to go through a little bit of pain, you need to have more developers. I've seen lots of stats about how fast people are hiring developers and I need to, it's really a reversal of that old outsourcing trend, I really need IT and the business working together, being agile, and being able to respond and leverage data. >> It's that hyperscaler mentality that Jassy has, "We got engineers, we'll spend time "on creating a better mousetrap, on lowering costs," whereas the enterprise, they don't have necessarily as many resources or as many engineers running around, they'll spend money to save time, so your point about solutions I think is right on. We'll see, I mean look, never say never with Amazon. We've seen it, certainly with on-prem, hybrid, whatever you want to call it, and I think you'll see the same with multicloud, and so we watch. >> Yeah, Dave, the analogy I gave in the final wrap is "Finding the right cloud is like Goldilocks "finding the perfect solution." There's one solution out there, I think it's a little too hot, and you're probably not smart enough to use it just yet. There's one solution that, yeah, absolutely, you can use all of your credits to leverage it, and will meet you where you are and it's great, and then you've got Amazon trying to fit everything in between, and they feel that they are just right no matter where you are on that spectrum, and that's why you get 36 billion growing at 35%, not something I've seen in the software space. >> All right, Stu, thank you for your thoughts on re:Invent, and thank you for watching this episode of theCUBE Insights, powered by ETR, this is Dave Vellante for Stu Miniman, we'll see you next time. It's theCUBE's 10th year of operations, it's our seventh AWS reInvent and every year, it gets better and better and every year, we've had theCUBE at reInvent, Jerry Chen has been on as a guest. He's a VIP, Jerry Chen, now a general partner at Greylock Tier One, one of the leading global Venture capitals at Silicon Valley. Jerry, you've been on the journey with us the whole time. >> I guess I'm your good luck charm. >> (laughs) Well, keep it going. Keep on changing the game. So, thanks for coming on. >> Jerry: Thanks for having me. >> So, now that you're a seasoned partner now at Greylock. You got a lot of investments under your belt. How's it going? >> It's great, I mean look, every single year, I look around the landscape thinking, "What else could be coming? "What if we surprise this year?" What's the new trends? What both macro-trends, also company trends, like, who's going to buy who, who's going to go public? Every year, it just gets busier and busier and bigger and bigger. >> All these new categories are emerging with this new architecture. I call it Cloud 2.0, maybe next gen Cloud, whatever you want to call it, it's clear visibility now into the fact that DevOps is working, Cloud operations, large scale operations with Cloud is certainly a great value proposition. You're seeing now multiple databases, pick the tool, I think Jassy got that right in his keynote, I believe that, but now the data equation comes over the top. So, you got DevOps infrastructure as code, you got data now looking like it's going to go down that same path of data as code where developers don't have to deal with all the different nuances of how data's stored, how it's handled, where is it, warm or cold or at glacier. So, developers still don't have that yet today. Seems to be an area of Amazon. What's your take on all this? >> I think you saw, so what drove DevOps? Speed, right? It's basically how developers shows you operations, merging of two groups. So, we're seeing the same trend DataOps, right? How data engineers and data scientists can now have the same speeds developers had for the past 10 years, DataOps. So, A, what does that mean? Give me the menu of what I want like, Goldilocks, too big, too small, just right. Too hot, too cold, just right. Like, give me the storage tier, the data tier, the size I want, the temperature I want and the speed I want. So, you're seeing DataOps give the same kind of Goldilocks treatment as developers. >> And on terms of like Cloud evolution again, you've seen the movie from the beginning at VM where now through Amazon, seventh year. What jumps out at you, what do you look at as squinting through the trend lines and the fashion of the features, it still seems to be the same old game, compute memory storage and software. >> Well I mean, compute memory storage, there's an atomic building blocks of a compute, right? So, regardless of services these high level frameworks, deep down, you still have compute networking and storage. So, that's the building blocks but I think we're seeing 10th year of reInvent this kind of, it's not one size fits all but this really big fat long tail, small instances, micro-instances, server lists, big instances for like jumbo VMs, bare metal, right? So, you're seeing not one architecture but folks can kind of pick and choose buy compute by the drip, the drop or buy compute by the whole VM or whole server full. >> And a lot of people are like, the builders love that. Amazon owns the builder market. I mean, if anyone who's doing a startup, they pretty much start on Amazon. It's the most robust, you pick your tools, you build, but Steve Malaney was just on before us says, "Enterprise don't want power tools, "they're going to cut their hand off." (laughs) Right so, Microsoft's been winning with this approach of consumable Cloud and it's a nice card to play because they're not yet there with capabilities with Amazon, so it's a good call, they got an Enterprise sales force. Microsoft playing a different game than AWS because they have to. >> Sure I mean, what's football now, you have a running game, you need a passing game, right? So, if you can't beat them with the running game, you go with a passing game and so, Amazon has kind of like the fundamental building blocks or power tools for the builders. There's a large segment of population out there that don't want that level of building blocks but they want us a little bit more prescriptive. Microsoft's been around Enterprise for many many years, they understand prescriptive tools and architectures. So, you're going to become a little bit more prefab, if you will. Here's how you can actually construct the right application, ML apps, AI apps, et cetera. Let me give you the building blocks at a higher level abstraction. >> So, I want to get your take on value creations. >> Jerry: Sure. >> So, if it's still early (mumbles), it's took a lot more growth, you start to see Jassy even admit that in his keynotes that he said quote, "There are two types "of developers and customers. "People want the building blocks "or people who want solutions." Or prefab or some sort of more consumable. >> More prescriptive, yeah. >> So, I think Amazon's going to start going that way but that being said, there's still opportunities for startups. You're an investor, you invest in startups. Where do you see opportunities? If you're looking at the startup landscape, what is the playbook? How should you advise startups? Because ya know, have the best team or whatever but you look at Amazon, it's like, okay, they got large scale. >> Jerry: Yeah. >> I'm going to be a little nervous. Are they going to eat my lunch? Do I take advantage of them? Do I draft off them? There are wide spaces as vertical market's exploding that are available. What's your view on how startups should attack the wealth creation opportunity value creation? >> There, I mean, Amazon's creating a new market, right? So, you look at their list of many services. There's just like 175 services out there, which is basically too many for any one company to win every single service. So, but you look at that menu of services, each one of those services themselves can be a startup or a collection of services can be a startup. So, I look at that as a roadmap for opportunity of companies can actually go in and create value around AI, around data, around security, around observability because Amazon's not going to naturally win all of those markets. What they do have is distribution, right? They have a lot of developer mind share. So, if you're a startup, you play one or three themes. So like, one is how do I pick one area and go deep for IP, right? Like, cheaper, better, faster, own some IP and though, they're going to execute better and that's doable over and over again in different markets. Number two is, we talked about this before, there's not going to be a one Cloud wins all, Amazon's clearly in the lead, they have won most of the Cloud, so far, but it'll be a multi-Cloud world, it'll be On Premise world. So, how do I play a multi-Cloud world, is another angle, so, go deep in IP, go multi-Cloud. Number three is this end to end solution, kind of prescriptive. Amazon can get you 80% of the way there, 70% of the way there but if you're like, an AI developer, you're a CMO, you're a marketing developer, you kind of want this end to end solution. So, how can I put together a full suite of tools from beginning to end that can give me a product that's a better experience. So, either I have something that's a deeper IP play a seam between multiple Clouds or give it end to end solutions around a problem and solve that one problem for our customer. >> And in most cases, the underlay is Amazon or Azure. >> Or Google or Alley Cloud or On Premises. Not going to wait any time soon, right? And so, how do I create a single fabric, if you will that looks similar? >> I want to riff with you in real time here on theCUBE around data. So, data scale is obviously a big discussion that's starting to happen now, data tsunami, we've heard that for years. So, there's two scale benefits, horizontal scale with data and then vertical specialism, vertical scale or ya know, using AI machine learning in apps, having data, so, how do you view that? What's your reaction to the notion of creating the horizontal scale value and vertical specialism value? >> Both are a great place for startups, right? They're not mutually exclusive but I think if you go horizontal, the amount of data being created by your applications, your infrastructure, your sensors, time stories data, ridiculously large amount, right? And that's not going away any time soon. I recently did investment in ChronoSphere, 'cause you guys covered over at CUBEcon a few weeks ago, that's talking about metrics and observability data, time stories data. So, they're going to handle that horizontal amount of data, petabytes and petabytes, how can we quarry this quickly, deeply with a lot of insight? That's one play, right? Cheaper, better, faster at scale. The next play, like you said, is vertical. It's how do I own data or slice the data with more contacts than I know I was going to have? We talked about the virtual cycle of data, right? Just the system of intelligence, as well. If I own a set of data, be it healthcare, government or self-driving car data, that no one else has, I can build a solution end to end and go deep and so either pick a lane or pick a geography, you can go either way. It's hard to do both, though. >> It's hard for startup. >> For a startup. >> Any big company. >> Very few companies can do two things well, startups especially, succeed by doing one thing very well. >> I think my observation is that I think looking at Amazon, is that they want the horizontal and they're leaving offers on the table for our startups, the vertical. >> Yeah, if you look at their strategy, the lower level Amazon gets, the more open-sourced, the more ubiquitous you try to be for containers, server lists, networking, S3, basic sub straits, so, horizontal horizontal, low price. As you get higher up from like, deep mind like, AI technologies, perception, prediction, they're getting a little bit more specialized, right? As you see these solutions around retail, healthcare, voice, so, the higher up in the stack, they can build more narrow solutions because like any startup of any product, you need the right wedge. What's the right wedge in the customers? At the base level of developers, building blocks, ubiquitous. For solutions marketing, healthcare, financial services, retail, how do I find a fine point wedge? >> So, the old Venture business was all enamored with consumers over the years and then, maybe four years ago, Enterprise got hot. We were lowly Enterprise guys where no one-- >> Enterprise has been hot forever in my mind, John but maybe-- >> Well, first of all, we've been hot on Enterprise, we love Enterprise but then all of a sudden, it just seemed like, oh my God, people had an awakening like, and there's real value to be had. The IT spend has been trillions and the stats are roughly 20 or so percent, yet to move to the Cloud or this new next gen architecture that you're investing companies in. So, a big market... that's an investment thesis. So, a huge enterprise market, Steve Malaney of Aviation called it a thousand foot wave. So, there's going to be a massive enterprise money... big bag of money on the table. (laughs) A lot of re-transformations, lot of reborn on the Cloud, lot of action. What's your take on that? Do you see it the same way because look how they're getting in big time, Goldman Sachs on stage here. It's a lot of cash. How do you think it's going to be deployed and who's going to be fighting for it? >> Well, I think, we talked about this in the past. When you look to make an investment, as a startup founder or as a VC, you want to pick a wave bigger than you, bigger than your competitors. Right so, on the consumer side, ya know, the classic example, your Instagram fighting Facebook and photo sharing, you pick the mobile first wave, iPhone wave, right, the first mobile native photo sharing. If you're fighting Enterprise infrastructure, you pick the Cloud data wave, right? You pick the big data wave, you pick the AI waves. So, first as a founder startup, I'm looking for these macro-waves that I see not going away any time soon. So, moving from BaaS data to streaming real time data. That's a wave that's happening, that's inevitable. Dollars are floating from slower BaaS data bases to streaming real time analytics. So, Rocksett, one of the investors we talked about, they're riding that wave from going BaaS to real time, how to do analytics and sequel on real time data. Likewise, time servers, you're going from like, ya know, BaaS data, slow data to massive amounts of time storage data, Chronosphere, playing that wave. So, I think you have to look for these macro-waves of Cloud, which anyone knows but then, you pick these small wavelettes, if that's a word, like a wavelettes or a smaller wave within a wave that says, "Okay, I'm going to "pick this one trend." Ride it as a startup, ride it as an investor and because that's going to be more powerful than my competitors. >> And then, get inside the wave or inside the tornado, whatever metaphor. >> We're going to torch the metaphors but yeah, ride that wave. >> All right, Jerry, great to have you on. Seven years of CUBE action. Great to have you on, congratulations, you're VIP, you've been with us the whole time. >> Congratulations to you, theCUBE, the entire staff here. It's amazing to watch your business grow in the past seven years, as well. >> And we soft launch our CUBE 365, search it, it's on Amazon's marketplace. >> Jerry: Amazing. >> SaaS, our first SaaS offering. >> I love it, I mean-- >> John: No Venture funding. (laughs) Ya know, we're going to be out there. Ya know, maybe let you in on the deal. >> But now, like you broadcast the deal to the rest of the market. >> (laughs) Jerry, great to have you on. Awards. At the Computer History Museum in Mountainview, can you hear the buzz of 230 plus attendees behind me? I'm very pleased to welcome one of the ACG SV board members Dr. Shampa Banerjee, technology executive, and chief product officer at Eros Digital. Shampa, thank you so much for giving us some of your time this evening. >> Thank you, it's a pleasure. >> So lots of great, innovative, and inspiring conversations, no doubt, going on behind us. >> I'm trying to listen to it. >> Yeah, so talk to us a little bit about Eros Digital, who you are, what you do. >> So Eros International is the largest studio in India. It produces or distributes around 60 to 70 percent of the films made in India, Bollywood films. So I run the streaming platform, the Netflix for Bollywood, that's what I call it. >> The Netflix for Bollywood, I love it. Now, tell us more about that. >> So, you know, it's a streaming platform, a lot of the titles are from what we produce. A lot of the titles we lease from other production houses, and that is the entire technology platform, and then how do you get to the, we connect the consumers, rather, to the entertainment, right? So we like to help them discover, we help them indulge in the whole experience, and then as they keep coming to us more and more, we personalize the experience for them, so that's really what we give them. >> You know, personalization is so key. We expect it right in our lives, and whatever it is that we're doing, we're engaging with an Amazon or a Netflix or at Eros for example, we kind of now expect that. We're sort of demanding consumers, right? We expect them to know what I want, just what I want, don't give me any things that I don't want, so is that one of the things that you've seen, maybe surprising in your career, is this increasing demand for personalization? >> Absolutely, because, you know, there's so much content out there, so much information, and unless there's a filtering mechanism that makes sense for you, people don't want to, you know, it's very hard for them, so they want you to do the work for them. It's entertainment, right? So absolutely. Everyone kind of expects it. It's not said. It's not explicit, but that's the expectation. >> And obviously, with the goal of delighting and retaining those customers, you as the chief product officer have to listen and react to that. >> I spent, I'll tell you a short story. I spent once a month going through all the customers' comments in different platforms, right? And one of the stories I read was this 17-year-old French gal in Paris, she loves watching Bollywood because she was suffering from leukemia and after she gets a treatment, she comes home, she wants to watch something that makes her happy, and we had some issues with that subtitles, and she was having a problem watching our movies and she begged "Please bring them back". And I ran out of my office, went to my team, and I said, "Guys, this is who we wake up for every day. We give her joy, we give her pleasure." So to me, that's how listening to the customers to me is primary, to me they are my biggest stakeholder, and I've told the CEO and founder that, look at the end of the day, I leave and argue with you if it doesn't serve my customers. That's what I believe, listening to the customers, listening to them, understanding, of course, we do a lot of data collection and we look at what we are doing and the patterns, and based on that we make modifications, we test different things to see what makes sense, what's working, and what's not working, because people don't always tell you, and even if you ask them, they're shy to tell you. But then you can see what they're doing, and that's an indicator. >> Well that makes you feel really good, seeing and hearing and feeling the impact that you're making, and speaking of impact, you have been, in the last minute or so that we have, you've been on the board of ACG SV for about the last five years. We're here tonight to honor Arista as the Outstanding Growth Award winner and (mumbles) Technology as the Emerging Growth winner, but really quickly, what makes ACG SV worth your time? >> So ACG honestly is a fantastic organization and you know, living in the Bay Area, there are many organizations, there are many events that are always going on, you know. ACG has been a place where I've seen it's a very, very, very, very diverse organization, of course I still wish there were more females, you know, but it's a very diverse organization, people of all ages, people from different walks of life, from different kinds of companies, you know, and people are very, very collaborative and help each other to do business. I've become personal friends with many of them, but the main thing is, you know, you come here, if you're new to the Valley especially, whether as a company or as an individual, this is one of the best places to come to because it's not too large, it's not too small, it has the right number of people, and it helps you quickly on board. They'll introduce you to people, introduce you to events, they give you what you need to kind of get started. So to me it's like, when I joined, I joined before I was on the board, almost, I don't know, seven or eight years ago, and I've seen this whole thing transform and it's just an excellent, supportive, the people are very open-minded, great ideas, and it's just an excellent organization, love it. So it's worth my time, you know, to take the extra hours, and I would love to see it get even bigger and more diverse and more interesting. >> Well it sounds like, I love how you kind of described ACG SV as being that Goldilocks type of organization, not too big, not too small, just right, but we thank you so much. I wish we had more time to talk, as a female in technology, but we'll have to have you back at the studio on The Cube! >> Thank you so much. >> Thank you so much for your time. (electronic music) >> Hey, welcome back everyone, live here in New York. This is the CUBE here in Manhattan for Big Data NYC's three days of coverage. We're one day three, things are starting to settle in, starting to see the patterns out there. I'll say it's Big Data week here, in conjunction with Hadoop World, formerly known as Strata Conference, Strata-Hadoop, Strata-Data, soon to be Strata-AI, soon to be Strata-IOT. Big Data, Mike Maccaux who's the Global Big Data Practice Lead at Dell EMC. We've been in this world now for multiple years and, well, what a riot it's been. >> Yeah, it has. It's been really interesting as the organizations have gone from their legacy systems, they have been modernizing. And we've sort of seen Big Data 1.0 a couple years ago. Big Data 2.0 and now we're moving on sort of the what's next? >> Yeah. >> And it's interesting because the Big Data space has really lagged the application space. You talk about microservices-based applications, and deploying in the cloud and stateless things. The data technologies and the data space has not quite caught up. The technology's there, but the thinking around it, and the deployment of those, it seems to be a slower, more methodical process. And so what we're seeing in a lot of enterprises is that the ones that got in early, have built out capabilities, are now looking for that, how do we get to the next level? How do we provide self-service? How do we enable our data scientists to be more productive within the enterprise, right? If you're a startup, it's easy, right? You're somewhere in the public cloud, you're using cloud based API, it's all fine. But if you're an enterprise, with the inertia of those legacy systems and governance and controls, it's a different problem to solve for. >> Let's just face it. We'll just call a spade a spade. Total cost of ownership was out of control. Hadoop was great, but it was built for something that tried to be something else as it evolved. And that's good also, because we need to decentralize and democratize the incumbent big data warehouse stuff. But let's face it, Hadoop is not the game anymore, it's everything else. >> Right, yep. >> Around it so, we've seen that, that's a couple years old. It's about business value right now. That seems to be the big thing. The separation between the players that can deliver value for the customers. >> Matt: Yep. >> And show a little bit of headroom for future AI things, they've seen that. And have the cloud on premise play. >> Yep. >> Right now, to me, that's the call here. What do you, do you agree? >> I absolutely see it. It's funny, you talk to organizations and they say, "We're going cloud, we're doing cloud." Well what does that mean? Can you even put your data in the cloud? Are you allowed to? How are you going to manage that? How are you going to govern that? How are you going to secure that? So many organizations, once they've asked those questions, they've realized, maybe we should start with the model of cloud on premise. And figure out what works and what doesn't. How do users actually want to self serve? What do we templatize for them? And what do we give them the freedom to do themselves? >> Yeah. >> And they sort of get their sea legs with that, and then we look at sort of a hybrid cloud model. How do we be able to span on premise, off premise, whatever your public cloud is, in a seamless way? Because we don't want to end up with the same thing that we had with mainframes decades ago, where it was, IBM had the best, it was the fastest, it was the most efficient, it was the new paradigm. And then 10 years later, organizations realized they were locked in, there was different technology. The same thing's true if you go cloud native. You're sort of locked in. So how do you be cloud agnostic? >> How do you get locked in a cloud native? You mean with Amazon? >> Or any of them, right? >> Okay. >> So they all have their own APIs that are really good for doing certain things. So Google's TensorFlow happens to be very good. >> Yeah. Amazon EMR. >> But you build applications that are using those native APIS, you're sort of locked. And maybe you want to switch to something else. How do you do that? So the idea is to-- >> That's why Kubernetes is so important, right now. That's a very key workload and orchestration container-based system. >> That's right, so we believe that containerization of workloads that you can define in one place, and deploy anywhere is the path forward, right? Deploy 'em on prem, deploy 'em in a private cloud, public cloud, it doesn't matter the infrastructure. Infrastructure's irrelevant. Just like Hadoop is sort of not that important anymore. >> So let me get your reaction on this. >> Yeah. So Dell EMC, so you guys have actually been a supplier. They've been the leading supplier, and now with Dell EMC across the portfolio of everything. From Dell computers, servers and what not, to storage, EMC's run the table on that for many generations. Yeah, there's people nippin' at your heels like Pure, okay that's fine. >> Sure. It's still storage is storage. You got to store the data somewhere, so storage will always be around. Here's what I heard from a CXO. This is the pattern I hear, but I'll just summarize it in one conversation. And then you can give a reaction to it. John, my life is hell. I have application development investment plan, it's just boot up all these new developers. New dev ops guys. We're going to do open source, I got to build that out. I got that, trying to get dev ops going on. >> Yep. >> That's a huge initiative. I got the security team. I'm unbundling from my IT department, into a new, difference in a reporting to the board. And then I got all this data governance crap underneath here, and then I got IOT over the top, and I still don't know where my security holes are. >> Yep. And you want to sell me what? (Matt laughs) So that's the fear. >> That's right. >> Their plates are full. How do you guys help that scenario? You walk in, actually security's pretty much, important obviously you can see that. But how do you walk into that conversation? >> Yeah, it's sort of stop the madness, right? >> (laughs) That's right. >> And all of that matters-- >> No, but this is all critical. Every room in the house is on fire. >> It is. >> And I got to get my house in order, so your comment to me better not be hype. TensorFlow, don't give me this TensorFlow stuff. >> That's right. >> I want real deal. >> Right, I need, my guys are-- >> I love TensorFlow but, doesn't put the fire out. >> They just want spark, right? I need to speed up my-- >> John: All right, so how do you help me? >> So, what we'd do is, we want to complement and augment their existing capabilities with better ways of scaling their architecture. So let's help them containerize their big data workload so that they can deploy them anywhere. Let's help them define centralized security policies that can be defined once and enforced everywhere, so that now we have a way to automate the deployment of environments. And users can bring their own tools. They can bring their data from outside, but because we have intelligent centralized policies, we can enforce that. And so with our elastic data platform, we are doing that with partners in the industry, Blue Talent and Blue Data, they provide that capability on top of whatever the customer's infrastructure is. >> How important is it to you guys that Dell EMC are partnering. I know Michael Dell talks about it all the time, so I know it's important. But I want to hear your reaction. Down in the trenches, you're in the front lines, providing the value, pulling things together. Partnerships seem to be really important. Explain how you look at that, how you guys do your partners. You mentioned Blue Talent and Blue Data. >> That's right, well I'm in the consulting organization. So we are on the front lines. We are dealing with customers day in and day out. And they want us to help them solve their problems, not put more of our kit in their data centers, on their desktops. And so partnering is really key, and our job is to find where the problems are with our customers, and find the best tool for the best job. The right thing for the right workload. And you know what? If the customer says, "We're moving to Amazon," then Dell EMC might not sell any more compute infrastructure to that customer. They might, we might not, right? But it's our job to help them get there, and by partnering with organizations, we can help that seamless. And that strengthens the relationship, and they're going to purchase-- >> So you're saying that you will put the customer over Dell EMC? >> Well, the customer is number one to Dell EMC. Net promoter score is one of the most important metrics that we have-- >> Just want to make sure get on the record, and that's important, 'cause Amazon, and you know, we saw it in Net App. I've got to say, give Net App credit. They heard from customers early on that Amazon was important. They started building into Amazon support. So people saying, "Are you crazy?" VMware, everyone's saying, "Hey you capitulated "by going to Amazon." Turns out that that was a damn good move. >> That's right. >> For Kelsinger. >> Yep. >> Look at VM World. They're going to own the cloud service provider market as an arms dealer. >> Yep. >> I mean, you would have thought that a year ago, no way. And then when they did the deal, they said, >> We have really smart leadership in the organization. Obviously Michael is a brilliant man. And it sort of trickles on down. It's customer first, solve the customer's problems, build the relationship with them, and there will be other things that come, right? There will be other needs, other workloads. We do happen to have a private cloud solution with Virtustream. Some of these customers need that intermediary step, before they go full public, with a hosted private solution using a Virtustream. >> All right, so what's the, final question, so what's the number one thing you're working on right now with customers? What's the pattern? You got the stack rank, you're requests, your deliverables, where you spend your time. What's the top things you're working on? >> The top thing right now is scaling architectures. So getting organizations past, they've already got their first 20 use cases. They've already got lakes, they got pedabytes in there. How do we enable self service so that we can actually bring that business value back, as you mentioned. Bring that business value back by making those data scientists productive. That's number one. Number two is aligning that to overall strategy. So organizations want to monetize their data, but they don't really know what that means. And so, within a consulting practice, we help our customers define, and put a road map in place, to align that strategy to their goals, the policies, the security, the GDP, or the regulations. You have to marry the business and the technology together. You can't do either one in isolation. Or ultimately, you're not going to be efficient. >> All right, and just your take on Big Data NYC this year. What's going on in Manhattan this year? What's the big trend from your standpoint? That you could take away from this show besides it becoming a sprawl of you know, everyone just promoting their wares. I mean it's a big, hyped show that O'Reilly does, >> It is. >> But in general, what's the takeaway from the signal? >> It was good hearing from customers this year. Customer segments, I hope to see more of that in the future. Not all just vendors showing their wares. Hearing customers actually talk about the pain and the success that they've had. So the Barclay session where they went up and they talked about their entire journey. It was a packed room, standing room only. They described their journey. And I saw other banks walk up to them and say, "We're feeling the same thing." And this is a highly competitive financial services space. >> Yeah, we had Packsotta's customer on Standard Bank. They came off about their journey, and how they're wrangling automating. Automating's the big thing. Machine learning, automation, no doubt. If people aren't looking at that, they're dead in my mind. I mean, that's what I'm seeing. >> That's right. And you have to get your house in order before you can start doing the fancy gardening. >> John: Yeah. >> And organizations aspire to do the gardening, right? >> I couldn't agree more. You got to be able to drive the car, you got to know how to drive the car if you want to actually play in this game. But it's a good example, the house. Got to get the house in order. Rooms are on fire (laughs) right? Put the fires out, retrench. That's why private cloud's kicking ass right now. I'm telling you right now. Wikibon nailed it in their true private cloud survey. No other firm nailed this. They nailed it, and it went viral. And that is, private cloud is working and growing faster than some areas because the fact of the matter is, there's some bursting through the clouds, and great use cases in the cloud. But, >> Yep. >> People have to get the ops right on premise. >> Matt: That's right, yep. >> I'm not saying on premise is going to be the future. >> Not forever. >> I'm just saying that the stack and rack operational model is going cloud model. >> Yes. >> John: That's absolutely happening, that's growing. You agree? >> Absolutely, we completely, we see that pattern over and over and over again. And it's the Goldilocks problem. There's the organizations that say, "We're never going to go cloud." There's the organizations that say, "We're going to go full cloud." For big data workloads, I think there's an intermediary for the next couple years, while we figure out operating pulse. >> This evolution, what's fun about the market right now, and it's clear to me that, people who try to get a spot too early, there's too many diseconomies of scale. >> Yep. >> Let the evolution, Kubernetes looking good off the tee right now. Docker containers and containerization in general's happened. >> Yep. >> Happening, dev ops is going mainstream. >> Yep. >> So that's going to develop. While that's developing, you get your house in order, and certainly go to the cloud for bursting, and other green field opportunities. >> Sure. >> No doubt. >> But wait until everything's teed up. >> That's right, the right workload in the right place. >> I mean Amazon's got thousands of enterprises using the cloud. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> It's not like people aren't using the cloud. >> No, they're, yeah. >> It's not 100% yet. (laughs) >> And what's the workload, right? What data can you put there? Do you know what data you're putting there? How do you secure that? And how do you do that in a repeatable way. Yeah, and you think cloud's driving the big data market right now. That's what I was saying earlier. I was saying, I think that the cloud is the unsubtext of this show. >> It's enabling. I don't know if it's driving, but it's the enabling factor. It allows for that scale and speed. >> It accelerates. >> Yeah. >> It accelerates... >> That's a better word, accelerates. >> Accelerates that horizontally scalable. This is Dave Vellante with Peter Burris and we are here at VM World 2017 in Las Vegas. This is the eighth year of the Cube doing VM World, it started in Moscow and Moscow is under construction. So we're here back in Vegas. Although they've had VM World in Vegas a couple times. Collin Gallagher is here. He's the senior director of product marketing for Hyper Converged Infrastructure at Dell EMC. Collin, great to see you, thanks for coming to the Cube. >> Thanks Dave, thanks for having me. >> So first of all, how's the show going for you? >> Fantastic. Incredibly busy. As you can see, Hyper Converged is the hot thing yet again. I think last year was a big thing. But it's nice to see it's being... Customers are asking about it, you're seeing it in the keynotes. You know, the products being mentioned, Vsan, VXrail, et cetera. And just being swamped and busy and having a little bit of fun as well. >> So before we get into the announcements and we want to do that and give you the opportunity to talk about that, Peter and I and folks in the Cube have been talking all week, really all year. >> Peter: Yeah. >> About how customers are coming to the reality that I can't just reform my business and try to stuff it into the cloud, I really got to understand the realities of my business and bring the cloud model to the extent that I can, to the business. So what role does Hyper Converged play, in that context of bringing the cloud to my business? >> Well, I think Hyper Converged is the technology that allows you to do that. But as you bring out, as you mentioned, you have to also rethink about how you maintain your business, right? Because Hyper Converged consolidates you compute, your storage, your networking into one system. But that means that you may have to think about consolidating your storage teams, your compute teams and your networking teams as well. Right? And if you're going to keep them separate but merge the technology, there's going to be some impedance mismatched there. So Hyper Converged is an enabler for that, but it requires you to transform not just the technology, but also how you manage and staff your business as well. >> So I remember, I guess it was three years ago now, at VM World, you guys made the sort of first announcement of sort of software defined true Hyper Converged product and it's really evolved quite dramatically from then so maybe bring us up to where we are today and talk about some of the announcements that you made. >> Yeah, so... Yes, when Hyper Converged was announced a couple years ago, in a couple different products, but the point I was making a little bit earlier is that Hyper Converged is not just a single product. It's enabling technology. And much like Flash was five to seven year ago, it's going everywhere. >> Peter: It's a design approach. >> It's a design, exactly. >> Yeah, it's a design approach. And you're seeing it in appliances that have been very successful today, you're seeing it in larger rack scale systems, you're seeing it in software only systems, it depends on how and much, as you said, Dave, you want to transform right? You can do some of your build your own Hyper Converged stuff and not transform very much at all. You can do full turn-key cloud built on Hyper Converged, but that's going to require a vast degree of not just infrastructure transformation, but also work force transformation to go with it. >> Now, one of the things we've observed, Collin, and get some feedback from you on this is that... Cause we totally agree. In fact, we wrote a piece of research we called the Iron Triangle of IT and the fact that there is this very tight linking between people with skills, the automation that they use to manage products, that dictate the skills that dictate the automation, and breaking that as well. And a lot of our CIO clients are telling us, that you guy don't understand. The biggest problem I got is getting my people to work differently together. New processes, new approach to doing things. So one of the forcing funtions has been is historically when we think about designing systems to run work loads, we started with the CPU. We sized the CPU and then we did everything else. Now we start thinking about a lot of these data driven, digital oriented kinds of systems. We're thinking about something different. That catalyzed with this enormous performance improvements and storage over the last few year through Flash, vSAN related types of things. What are some of the new design principles that people have to factor as they start thinking about the role that Hyper Converged is going to play? >> So let me play off that. So yes, people design for the CPU because that was the bottle neck, right? Then as CPU performance grew, 5X, 10X, et cetera, they started designing for storage because that became the bottle neck, right? So part of your question is what's going to be the next bottleneck? Right? And I think you just had Chad talking on before. I think the network may be that upcoming bottleneck right now. You know, particularly in the Hyper Converged world where everything is connected through the network. That's your back plan. It's a different approach to storage. So designing around your network capabilities or your network infrastructure, you know, deploying Hyper Converged in a branch office with one GIG is very different than deploying Hyper Converged in a data center with 25 GIG and how you do it. So that's one, but I think Hyper Converged is all about balance in general, right. There's a fixed ratio depending on the product implementation of storage to compute, right? And generally they like to be in the Goldilocks zone, right? Not too much CPU, just... Not too CPU heavy or not too much storage heavy. And I think as Hyper Converged is going more mainstream and more normal, it's pushing those subtle boundaries there. And I think things like flexing out to the cloud when you need additional storage or additional compute capability, is one of those design considerations you need to take into account as you're deploying Hyper Converged because, as you said, you're designing around constraints and there's some physical constraints you have to manage and you have to figure out how you can tap into some of the extra ones. >> So literally it's start with the outcomes, identify the data that's associated with those outcomes, figure out the physical characteristics necessary to apply and process and move that data or not move it. And use that as the starting point for the design considerations. Being very cognitive, going back to what Chad was talking about, that at the end of the day, it's the network that's binding these things and how far out is a protocol going to go, local versus wide area. >> I'm going to steal something that I read on Twitter the other day, that data is the new oil. Alright, and that's how you run your business. And just like how you ship oil to and from, from a well to a refinery, to finally to your gas station pump, you have to think of it, what's your data chain and how you get it and where you need to move it. >> So that's a term that we started using in the Cube in, I don't know, 2010. But what we found is that data is plentiful, but insights aren't. And so you see organizations really spending a lot of time, money, energy, trying to get to those insights, to give them competitive advantage and a new infrastructure emerging to support those. So I wonder, Collin, if you could talk about the portfolio, the products that you sort of look after and tie it into some of the things that you've announced this week. >> Yeah. So I look after our VM or Hyper Converged systems so Vxrail and Vxrack SDDC. You know, both jointly developed with VM Ware. I'm sure you've heard Pat and everybody else talk about them so if you've been watching any of the keynotes. But we also have a much larger portfolio. We have our Vsan ready nodes for customers who want to do it themselves, want to build their own systems. And again, that's, as we talk about degree of transformation, that allows customers to get into the Hyper Converged space, but not significantly transform how they're managing their business. We have the appliances. Obviously our Vxrail systems. So by the way, the news with the Vsan ready nodes is we're announcing them available on the Dell Poweredge 14G Platforms. Those are available now to order. On our Vxrail appliances, and the rest of the portfolio that'll be out on the 14G platform by the end of the year. But what's new with Vxrail, we're announcing Vxrail 4 dot 5, which provides life cycle management orchestration for the latest and greatest VM Ware software stacks. So Vsan, 6 dot 5, Vsan 6 dot 6 Vsphere 6 dot 5. So both of those are out now and available. With all the great goodness that you've seen and heard about them. We're also announcing new configuration options for our Vxrack SDDC platform. So that's our much larger, it's the big brother to Vxrail, fully turn-key, you know, software defined data center infrastructure including NSX, all managed under one umbrella. >> So a higher-end solution? >> It's a much higher-end solution. Much higher for larger... Not necessarily scale because you know, it's not necessarily scale because you can start pretty small. As low as-- >> Peter: But still organized, coherent, well-packaged. >> But you have to, again, if we're talking about degrees of transformation, if you go with an appliance, okay you manage your compute and storage together. If you're going with a rack scale system, your managing the network as part of that as well. So that's another degree of transformation you have to be willing to make. So that's what's really the big difference between the two. New configuration options, up to 40 different hardware configs available now for that so really driven by customer choice. I want lower powered CPU's for certain workloads, I want higher powered CPU's, I want more all Flash choices, so really flush that portfolio out. And then lastly, we're announcing, our EHC and NHC platforms from Dell EMC are available built on Vxrack SDDC as well. >> EHC acronym? >> Collin: Enterprise Hybrid Cloud. >> And? >> Native Hybrid Cloud. EHC and NHC, sorry. Both of those two systems, which had run on our Vblock infrastructure before, are now running on Vxrack SDDC as well. So you get fully turn-key hybrid cloud built on top of an HCI system. >> And when you think of a EHC, Enterprise Hybrid Cloud, and Native Hybrid Cloud, NHC, can you talk about the work loads? That customers should think about putting on each? >> Yeah, so EHC is much more for traditional workloads. For customers who are looking to get into hybrid cloud. Actually, we see a lot of, our number one customer for someone who buys EHC, is they've tried to build cloud on their own and failed. They want something turn-key, they don't want to make the same mistakes again, they have the scars, and they want something easier and simpler than building it themselves. But that is traditional workloads, your traditional data center workloads managed in a cloud environment. NHC, our Native Hybrid Cloud product is for cloud native workloads, it's actually turn-key pivotal systems. So it's PSC based so if you're deploying workloads that will run in pivotal and you want it as a test dev system in house, or you want to run that in house and then migrate it later to the cloud, that's what NHC is for. >> Okay, we got to leave it there. But I'll give you a last word on VM World 2017, cloud, Hyper Converged, a lot of new innovation. What's your bumper sticker, Collin, on the show? >> My bumper sticker is again, HCI is primetime, it's here, I used to say that, customers, when I started this job two years ago would tell me, "tell me why I need HCI?" And what customers are asking me now is, last year was, "tell me how I use HCI?" and this year it's "tell me where I can't use HCI?" So there's been this waterfall shift in how they're looking at doing it. >> Dave: So they like it, they're trying to apply it. >> Peter: What is it? How it works? And what's the impact? >> Dave: And I want to apply it in as many places as possible. Where are my blind spots? >> Yeah, where doesn't it fit? What are the constraints where it doesn't fit? >> Collin Gallagher, thanks so much for coming back in the Cube. >> Oh, my pleasure. Thanks, Dave. >> Keep right there, everybody. We're live in San Francisco for CUBE's special coverage, exclusive coverage, of Cisco Systems DevNet Create. It's an inaugural event for DevNet, a new extension to their developer program. DevNet, which is their classic developer program for the Cisco ecosystem, network guys, so on and so forth, moving packets around, hardware guys. DevNet Create is about developers and dev ops and cloud-native, all the goodness of application developers. Where apps meets infrastructure, certainly with the Cisco acquisition of AppDynamics, a new world order is coming down the pipe. Cisco's moving up the stack. I'm John Furrier, Peter Burris is my co-host, our next guest is Val Bercovici, CUBE alumni and also guest analyst in our studio in Palo Alto, also the cofounder of Peritus.ai, and now you can talk about it. Welcome to theCUBE. >> Thanks, John. We get to talk about it, finally. >> So before we get into your company, and I want to drill into it because the first public CUBE interview, drilling down on what you're working on. What's your take on Cisco's event here, because, I've known Cisco since I moved to Silicon Valley, 18 years, and even before then, and they scaled all the internet connecting networks. There's always been a discussion internally inside Cisco about moving up the stack. And it's always been kind of like a Civil War. Half the company wants to move up the stack, half doesn't, and now, you've been in NetApp, you know this world and its infrastructure, its hardware, its gear, its boxes, network packets. This is a seminal moment for Cisco. They've tried some open source before, but this seems like an all-in bet. Your thoughts? >> It is, and I was just telling Yodi Rahm, before we went live on stage that I think this is like Goldilocks event, right? It's my first. Apparently, it's the first one of its kind here at Cisco, and for me it's not too big. It's not too small. I find it really just the right size, and I find it very well-targeted, in terms of the fellow speakers, panelists that I was on with today in terms of, I see the right amount of laptops, the right amount of code, basically, amongst the attendees on the floor here. So my first impression, 'cause that's all I have so far, is it's a very well-targeted show, and it's not unique anymore. You'll notice Intel kind of pulled back from having one large event, one large annual event, and smaller more targeted events for developers, for operators, for other ISVs, and so forth. >> You're talking about the IDF Intel Developer Forum. >> The IDF, yeah, it's no longer a big, monolithic event. They split it up into more- >> And IBM has also collapsed their shows into one monster show. So little micro-events seem to be the norm. >> Yeah, I wouldn't even call it quite even a micro-event. It's a bit bigger than that, but it's not a VMworld . >> It's not a Dreamforce. >> It's not a COMDEX to VR sales. >> Interesting, I like they did their homework on the panels. So in terms of subject matter, the agenda looks great, but I do agree with you. I like how principals are here. It's not just staff here. It's both people in the trenches at Cisco, and the execs are here. Susie Wee and some other folks, they run Cisco a lot. They're all here. >> And their CTO, this morning, I caught the opening keynote livestream on the way over here. She did a fantastic job describing the role of the infrastructure developer, which is something that is a bit nebulous to nail down, at least it has been in the past, and I'm really glad that Cisco is echoing that, because I think it helps their entire ecosystem, their partner ecosystem, particularly former employers like NetApp of mine. >> I'm usually critical of big companies trying to put their toe in the water with some event that looks like a little cloud washing or you know, here or there, but I think Cisco's got a legit opportunity with programmable infrastructure. And I think, just in general, straight up, they do, because their infrastructure, and Peter and I talked about that. But I think IoT is really the big driver. They could really, that's a network connection. It's at the edge. It requires intelligence. That's a good angle for them. >> It's a great angle. The only beef I have, the gripe I have, is they still call it IoE, I think. If it's going to be Internet of Everything, and it's Internet of nothing, right? I really wish they'd kind of stick to the agreed term, and what they are doing of course is giving- >> But they were first with IoE. They were, you got to give Cisco, when they ran those commercials, what 10 years ago? >> Yeah. >> You know. >> It's a personal in for me. The commercials are fantastic. It's just the term bothers me. >> They got dogma with IoE, come on, get rid of it. Okay, tell me about your company? >> So Peritus.ai, we've realized now there's a chance to go beyond traditional digital disruption of existing industries to cognitive disruption. Let me explain what I mean by that. We're seeing a lot of increasing pace of change in data centers. The conference here, and all the technologies spoken about here, are very foreign to more traditional data center operators, and so the new environments, microservice architectures, or cloud-native apps or so forth. It's a pace of change that we haven't seen before. Agile business and agile software developer models can push code out realistically on a daily basis, whereas the waterfall model and the iCode models in most IT service practitioners practice, that's a manual or quarterly update cycle, with formal change managed practices. >> John: A more settled, structured. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Slow. >> Familiar. >> John: Reliable. >> You know, but it's the past, and the pace of change now is creating stress within IT organizations and stress within the product support organizations of the vendors that they choose to deploy. You couple that with increasing complexity of the environments we have here. We have a lot going on, the ethos of CNCF, which is container packaged, dynamically orchestrated, and micro services architected apps, cloud-native apps. The abstraction layers are masking a lot of complexity there, but the complexity is still there. And you have very good availability if you're able to write to cloud-native principles as a developer, but nevertheless, you still got that .001% of your outages so forth. And the last line of defense towards business continuity is still a human. You still got escalation engineers and support organizations that go through pretty contrived and complicated workflows to triage and diagnose problems, perhaps a case manager to assign a case or subject manager expert, get that back and forth information with the customer and finally resolve the case, and this is what we term cognitive disruption. The maturity of the AI platforms now have reached a point where you can take these complicated workflows that require nuance and inference, and actually apply true machine learning and deep learning to them. And if not entirely automate the resolution of these complex cases, better prepare a scarce resource, an escalation engineer with lots of experience, with more context up front when they encounter the case, so they can close it more quickly, and this has- >> So you're targeting, so if I understand this correctly, you're targeting the personnel in the data center. >> Val: The supportability space. >> Escalation engineers, the human labor, the last mile, if you will, or whatever, first mile, how you look at it. >> Correct. We see APM vendors in this space, we see ITSM vendors in the space. They're partners and even platforms for us. No one really is focused on supportability and automating those workflows using cognitive techniques. >> John: Give an example, give an example. >> The best example I can give actually is firsthand. I'll try and be as generic as I can to protect the innocent, but if you take a look- >> John: NetApp. >> (laughs) It's not even specifically a NetApp case. >> John: Okay, all right. >> If you look at the supply chain upstream, let's talk about electronic supply chain. If a particular manufacturer defect occurs upstream, that defect gets shipped in bundles, purchased by an equipment supplier vendor in bundles, and deployed by customers in bundles. So it's not like one of these one node outage situations is the best case scenario, traditional triple replication, you know. >> John: It's a bad batch basically. >> A bad batch. >> A lot of bad product. >> That can take out not just a node, it can take out a rack. It can take out multiple racks of storage gear, switching gear, server hosts, and so forth. In that case, again, your last line of defense is a human. You basically got to triage and diagnose the problem, could be hardware problem, could be a driver-software problem, could be an upstream OS or database problem. And it's a very stressful environment, a very stressful situation. You can take a look at prior case notes. You can take a look at machine logs and data. You can take a look at product documentation and bill of materials from suppliers, and you can pre-analyze a lot of that, and factor that into your diagnosis, effectively having it almost ready before the case is even opened, so that when the escalation engineer is assigned the case, they don't start from ground zero. They start from third base and almost they're rounding their way to home, and they're able to apply all the prior knowledge, algorithms never sleep. All the prior knowledge in terms of all the cases that have actually been dealt with that match that to a degree. They're never perfect matches, because that's just business process automation. There's a degree of inference required, and using AI techniques, we're able to guess that you know what? I've seen this before. It's very obscure, but it's actually going to be this resolution. >> So AI's technology that you're using in machine learning and data, what problem are you solving specifically? Saving them time, getting them faster resolutions? >> So we're improving the efficiency of support operations. There's always margin pressures within customer support operations. We're fundamentally solving complex system problems. We've reached a point now where business process automation can solve trivial support cases. >> John: Wait a minute, wait a minute, hold on. Expert system's supposed to do this. >> And they did in the past, and now we're evolving beyond the expert. >> Not really. Remember those expert system stays? >> Yeah, I remember LISP and all those early days, so yeah. >> So this kind of sounds like a modern version of an expert system to aid the support engineers to either have a predetermined understanding of options and time to solution. >> So we're able to do so much more than that, right? We're able to create what we call otologies. We're able to categorize all the cases that you've seen in the past, find out whether this new one fits an existing category, if so, if it matches other criteria, if not, defining a category. We're able to orchestrate. Resolution is not just a one-shot deal. Resolution is diagnose the problem, find out if you have some subject matter experts available to resolve the issue, assign it to them, track their progress, close the case, follow up on customer satisfaction. All those things are pretty elaborate workflows that can be highly automated today with cognitive approach-- >> Congratulations on launching. Thanks for spending the time to lay that out. What's next? You've got some seed funding? >> Val: We've got some seed funding. >> You got some in an incubator at the Hive in Palo Alto, which we know quite well. Rob is great, Rob is a great friend. He's done great, he's done great. How many people do have, what are you guys looking to do? What are some of the priorities? >> We are hiring. We're definitely looking to get more data scientists on staff, more full-stack engineers particularly with log experience. We're still looking for a CTO and leadership team. So there's a lot of hiring coming in place. >> John: How many in there now? >> We have about, less than 10 people working right now. >> It's a great opportunity for a classic early-stage opportunity. >> Yeah, early stage opportunity. We're addressing a hot space, and what I love is I personally shifted from being a provider of cloud-native solutions in this market to being a consumer. So I'm seeing exactly how a perfect storm is coming together of machine and deep learning algorithms, running on, orchestrated-- >> John: Both sides of the table. You should talk to Mark Sister. >> Yeah. He's been on both sides. What's it like to be on the other side now? >> It's everything I actually thought it would be, because at the end of the day, I always say, developers are the ultimate pragmatists. So it's not so much about brand loyalty at any particular vendors. What solution, whether it's an open source library, whether it's a commercial library, whether it's a propietary cloud service or something in between. What solution can solve my task, this next task? And composite applications are a very real thing right now. >> So we had a question I posted into the crowd chat, from this social net. I'm going to ask you the same questions. So Burt's watching and maybe you'll find that thread, and I'll add to it later. Here's the question. What challenges still remain as part of implementing DevOps, in your opinion? How did you see the landscape, and how are people addressing them? In your expert opinion, what's the answer to that question? What's your opinion? >> It's a two-faceted answer, at least. The first one, it's not a cliche. It's still a cultural challenge. If you want to actually want to map, it's not even a cultural challenge specifically, it's Conway's Law. Any product output, software output, is a function of your organizational structure that created it. So I find that whether you want to call it culture, whether you want to call it org structure, the org structure's rarely in place to incentivize entire teams to collaborate together throughout a full CICD pipeline process. You've still got incentive structures and org structures in place for people to develop code, unit test it, perhaps even integration test it, but I see more often than I'd like to, isolated or fenced off operations teams that take that and try to make it something real. They might call themselves SREs, and outside recovery engineers, but they're not integrated enough into the development process, in my mind. >> So you're saying the organization structures are also foreclosing their ability be agile, even though they're trying hard, that the incentives are too grounded in there. >> So I still see a lot of skunkworks projects as DevOps projects, and it shouldn't be that way anymore, right? There should be, where there's a legitimate business reason for more agile businesses, there should be a much more formal DevOps structure, as opposed to skunkworks DevOps structure. So that's one challenge, and it's not new, but it's also not resolved. And the other one really is this blind spot for the autonomous data center vision, this blind spot for operations being 100% automated and really just never having to deal with the problem. The blind spot is everything breaks. New technology just happens to break in new ways, but it does fundamentally break, and if your last line of defense is a human or a group of humans, you can expect a very, very different sort of responsiveness and agility as opposed to having something automated. >> Peter and I have been talking all morning the Ford firing of Mark Fields, which was announced yesterday. He quote retired by the Twitter handle of Ford, which is just code words for he got pushed aside. One, we're big fans of Mark Fields, before we covered Ford there in Palo Alto, doing some innovative centers over there, and also a Cloud Foundry customer. So I was actually, took notice of that. We were commenting on not so much the tech, but the guy got fired in less than three years into his journey as chief executive. >> Val: Yeah. >> Now the stock's down 39% so the hammer's coming down from either the family, Ford family, or Wall Street, Peter thinks Wall Street. But this brings up the question, how are you going to be a transformational leader, if you don't have the runway? Back to your org structure. This is, this is-- >> I'm like a broken record. I was thinking that yesterday as I was watching CNBC, and just thinking in my mind, processing what they were announcing. I'm realizing in my head, I bet why, because I don't know, but I bet why, I speculate why he got fired, because he wasn't able to put the org structure and incentives in place to run faster, and that's what the board asked his successor is run faster, and if his successor doesn't put the org structure and the incentives in place to be an agile business. That's the definition of insanity. It's banging your head against the wall. >> If I had to add one more thing to that comment, which by the way I agree with you. If you could configure an asset in a company besides the organizational structure, so you did that, what would your next asset be? More cloud, more data-centric, what would be? >> It might be cliche, but it's totally true, I would have a cloud-first approach to everything. So we don't remember this guy called Obama anymore, but really he did a pretty revolutionary thing, when he brought in a CIO eight, nine years ago, and he made every federal government department defend a capital purchase. And they basically have to go through a multi-hundred page document to defend a capital IT acquisition, but to actually go cloud first or cloud native, didn't require almost any pre-approval at all to get funding. >> So we made it easier incentives to go cloud. >> Created incentives, and I'm a big believer that cloud is not a panacea. >> That helped Amazon, not IBM, as the CIA case now. >> I'm a big believer in life cycles, so it's not like cloud is the rubber stamp solution for every problem, but the beginning innovation phase of every new product line or revenue stream really should be in the cloud right now. The amazing services, forget about IS and all that. Look at the machine language and APIs, IoT APIs, the entire CICD pipelines that are automated and simplistic, the innovation phase for everyone should be in the crowd. Then you got to take a step back, look at that bill, get over your sticker shock, and figure out whether you can afford to stay in a cloud using maybe some of those higher-level proprietary high-margin services and whether you want to re-factor. And that's where professional services kick in, and I think that might be the next great disruption for AI, is re-factoring apps. >> I think one of the things, final question I want to get your thoughts on. Pretend that we're at Cisco and we go back to the ranch, and someone says, "Hey, what's that DevNet Create?" What's our advice to our peers, if we had an opinion that people valued inside Cisco, doubled down on DevNet Create, continue, merge it DevNet? What would your advice be? >> I'm a long time James Governor fan. Developers are the new kingmakers. Actually I think we're in this situation that's not very well understood by business leaders right now, where developers are influencing all the technology infrastructure decisions we're making, but they don't necessarily write the checks. But if you want to run an agile business, a digital business today, you can't do it without happy developers and a good developer experience, so you have to cater to their needs and their biases and so forth, and at shows like this I think, bring Cisco's large ecosystem to bear, where we can figure out how Cisco can maximize the developer experience, how partners, and I'm soon to be a Cisco partner myself at Peritus.ai can maximize their developer experience and just drive more modern business. >> Bring the developer community in with the networking, get those margins connected.
