We are here for the 7th annual Cloud Now top women in cloud innovation awards. Excited to be welcoming to theCube for the first time, one of tonight's winners, Catherine Krow, the founder and CEO of Digitory Legal. Catherine, welcome. >> Thank you so much, it's a pleasure to be here. >> So one of the things I love about your story, Catherine, is you were a practicing attorney for 17 years. >> Yes. >> You're one of the assistant DA's in San Francisco. And you are now the founder of a SAS based software company. >> I am, and I was a partner at major law firm named Orrick for many many years before doing that. >> So, I can imagine, back in school when you were in law school, didn't envision you would actually be a female entrepreneur in technology. >> Oh heavens no. When I graduated from law school 20 years ago, this was probably dead last on the things that I thought I would be doing. But, when I was practicing, it became clear that there was an enormous change in the market, and a huge need for better and more powerful tools, particularly around the area of cost management and cost prediction. >> So tell us a little bit about Digitory Legal, and exactly what the software enables legal departments and companies to do. >> Well, the short answer is, we are bringing data driven cost prediction to law. And we're doing it to really help law firms and corporate legal departments succeed in a changing legal market. Now, for most of the time that I was practicing law, when clients would ask that "how much" question, the answer, which was perfectly acceptable, was, it depends. And that is no longer acceptable. So, in order for legal departments to do their job and for law firms to really succeed, we have to, as an industry, dig into our data and do better. And that's what we do. >> So when you had the idea, tell us about the process and the phases that you went through to carry it forward and get the angel funding that you're currently receiving. >> Well, the starting point was a lot of market research. Because I knew as a lawyer what my pain point was. I knew how hard it was to answer that "how much "question in complicated cases, and communicate with clients when things would change. But I didn't know if everybody else was feeling that pain, and I didn't know if there were markets out there, software tools out there that I just didn't know about. So I dug in and I dug in deep on what was out there, what were the pain points, and it took several months to realize that the problem really is a data problem, and it's been an industry wide problem for a long time. So to solve cost prediction, we needed to tackle the data problem, and then it was about pulling on my networking, finding the best Silicon Valley talent to help me do that. >> And speaking of network, here we are at CloudNOW, which is the network of women. And your background, and actually digging in there and being an attorney, looking at, these are the challenges I'm having, how much of an advantage has that been in the networking conversations that you've had, demonstrating to potential funders and those that are funding you, this is a huge gap in the market that isn't solvable, we have an idea, help us actually start this so we can start enabling organizations to leverage that data as you're saying, it's really the only option now. >> The industry expertise, the deep experience and my background, has really helped because I walked away from a big law firm partnership to solve this problem, it was so pressing. And there are very clear trigger points if you understand the industry very well, that are, make it easy to explain why now, and why us, and the market has changed and the whole approach of corporate law has changed, and we can explain that because I've lived it and breathed it. >> So a big part of this is digital transformation, which is a theme we hear at every tech event that we go to, but it's not just transforming a tech company. I was talking this morning to a ski resort company that digitized their entire process from paper to electronic, so everybody understands we are digital, we are mobile, we need to have that. I'm curious, do your conversations with maybe traditional law firms, maybe such as the ones that you've worked at, how easy is it to get them on board with being data driven, is the only way for you as a law form to continue to succeed and to compete with the next generation that understands data has to drive the business, revenue opportunities, etc. >> There's fortunately there's been enough publicity and enough of a market shift, and requirements on the client side that law is starting to understand that data driven decision making is the way of the future, and if they are not early, they are late. So in order to compete in what has become an incredibly difficult market for law firms, they must be able to help their clients make data driven decisions, and be different than the rest of the pack. So fortunately, the market has shifted, and that shift is very very clear to even the most traditional law firms. >> So even in customer conversations, they're getting it. >> They're getting it, and they know that I experience their pain. So it's working. >> Excellent. Well kind of to wrap things up, and to bring us back to the event that we're at tonight, you have the opportunity not only to present to about 300 attendees today, this event was sold out not even advertised, it was selling like hotcakes with just networking and word of mouth, but there's also some pretty big notable keynotes that are here tonight. Sheryl Sandberg being one of them, and kind of one of the beacons that us females in technology look to. You have the opportunity as a lawyer turned technology entrepreneur to present in front of someone who's pretty well known and inspirational. Thoughts on that? >> It's an honor. It's an honor and a privilege. I really can't thank CloudNOW enough for putting together this event and giving female entrepreneurs like myself the opportunity to stand up and say what we do to an audience like this. >> Lisa: It's pretty exciting. >> Yeah. >> Last question there, about your company, are you guys hiring, what types of rock stars are you looking for? Are you looking for people with legal background? With tech background? >> Um AI, because the core of what we do is artificial intelligence, natural language processing, so rock stars in artificial intelligence, send me your resume, I would love to talk to you. >> Excellent. We are here live in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay for Oracle's Modern CX show, Modern Customer Experience. The Modern Marketing Experience converted into the Modern CX Show. I'm John Furrier with The Cube. My co-host Peter Burris. Day two of coverage. Our next guest is Catherine Blackmore, Global Vice President, Customer Success, Global Customer Success at Oracle Marketing Cloud. Catherine, welcome back to The CUBE. Great to see you. >> Thank you so much for having me here. It's been an incredible week, just amazing. >> Last year we had a great conversation. Remember we had. >> Yes. >> It was one of those customer focused conversations. Because at the end of the day, the customers are the ones putting the products to use, solving their problems. You were on stage at the keynote. The theme here is journeys, and the heroes involved. What was the summary of the keynote? >> Sure. As you say, this theme has really been around heroic marketing moments. And in a way, I wanted to take our marketers and the audience to an experience and a time where I think a lot of folks can either remember or certainly relate where, what was the beginning of really one experience, which was Superman. If you think about heroism and a superhero, well, Superman will come to mind. But I think what was interesting about that is that it was created at a time where most folks were not doing well. It was actually during the Great Depression. And most folks wouldn't realize that Superman almost never came to be. It was an image, an icon, that was created by two teenage boys, Jerry Shuster and Joe Siegal. And what they did is they got audience. They understood, just as two teenage boys, my parents, my family, my community is just not doing well. And we see that folks are trying to escape reality. So we're going to come up with this hero of the people. And in doing so, what's interesting is, they really were bold, they were brave. They presented a new way to escape. And as a result, DC Comics took it up. And they launched, and they sold out every single copy. And I think it's just a really strong message about being able to think about creativity and being bold. Jerry and Joe were really the heroes of that story, which was around. My challenge to the audience is, who's your Superman? What is your creative idea that you need to get out there? Because in many ways, we need to keep moving forward. At the same time, though, balance running a business. >> It's interesting, you did mention Superman and they got passed over. And we do a lot of events in the industry, a lot of them are big data events. And it's one little insight could actually change a business, and most times, some people get passed over because they're not the decision maker or they may be lower in the organization or they may just be, not be knowing what to do. So the question on the Superman theme, I have to ask you, kind of put you on the spot here is, what is the kryptonite for the marketer, okay, because >> (laughing) Yes. >> there's a lot of obstacles in the way. >> Catherine: It is. >> And so people sometimes want to be Superman, but the kryptonite paralyzes them. >> Catherine: Yeah. >> Where's the paralysis? >> It's funny that you say that. I think I actually challenge folks to avoid the kryptonite. There was three things that we really talked about. Number one is, Modern Marketing Experience, it's just an incredible opportunity for folks to think ahead, dream big, be on the bleeding edge. But guess what, we're all going to go on flights, we're going to head home, and Monday morning's going to roll around and we're going to be stuck and running the business. And my inspiration and, really, challenge to the audience and to all of our marketers is how do we live Modern Marketing Experience everyday? How do we keep looking ahead and balance the business? And, really, those heroic marketers are able to do both. But it doesn't stop there. We talked a lot about this week, about talent. Do we have the right team? Kryptonite is not having the right people for today and tomorrow, and then in addition to that, you can't just have a team, you can't just have a vision, but what's your plan? Where actually having the right stakeholders engaged, the right sponsorship, that's certainly probably the ultimate kryptonite if you don't. >> The sponsorships are interesting because the people who actually will empower or have empathy for the users and empower their people and the team have to look for the yes's, not the no's. Right. And that's the theme that we see in the Cloud success stories is, they're looking for the yes. They're trying to get that yes. But they're challenging, but they're not saying no. That's going to shut it down. We've seen that in IT. IT's been a no-no, I was going to say no ops but in this digital transformation with the emphasis on speed, they have to get to the yes. So the question is, in your customer interactions, what are some of those use cases where getting to that yes, we could do this, What are some of the things, is it data availability? >> Catherine: Absolutely. >> Share some color on that. >> I think, So I actually had a wonderful time connecting with Marta Federici, she met with you earlier. And I love her story, because she really talks about the culture and placing the customer at the center of everything they're doing, to the extent that they're telling these stories about why are we doing this? We're trying to save lives, especially in healthcare. And just to have stories and images. And I know some companies do an amazing job of putting the customer up on the wall. When we talk to our customers about how do we actually advance a digital transformation plan? How do we actually align everyone towards this concept of a connected customer experience? It starts with thinking about everyone who touches the customer every day and inspiring them around how they can be part of being a customer centric organization. And that's really, that's really important. That's the formula, and that's what we see. Companies, that they can break through and have that customer conversation, it tends to align folks. >> Interesting. We were talking earlier, Mark Hurd's comment to both the CMO Summit that was happening in a separate part of the hotel here in the convention center, as well as his keynote. He was saying, look, we have all this technology. Why are we doing this one percent improvement? And he was basically saying, we have to get to a model where there's no data department anymore. There never was. >> That's right. >> And there shouldn't be. There shouldn't be, that department takes care of the data. That's kind of the old way of data warehousing. Everyone's a data department, and to your point, that's a liberating, and also enables opportunities. >> It does. We talked a lot. Actually, the CMO Summit that we had as well this week, a lot of our CMOs were talking about the democratization of data. And Elissa from Tableau, I think you also talked to. We talked about, how do you do that? And why, what are those use cases, where, Kristen O'Hara from Time Warner talked about it as well. And I think, that's where we have to go. And I think there's a lot of great examples on stage that I would like to think our marketers, and quite frankly, >> Which one's your favorite, favorite story? >> My favorite story. >> John: Your favorite story. >> Wow, that's really putting me on the spot. >> It's like picking your favorite child. I have four. I always say "well, they're good at this sport, or this kid's good in school." Is there? >> I guess one. >> John: Or ones that you want to highlight. >> Well one that I, because we talked about it today. And it was really a combination of team and plan. Just really highlighting on what Marta's driving. If you think about the challenges of a multinational >> Peter: Again, this is at Philips. >> John: Marta, yeah. >> Catherine: This is Philips, Royal Philips. So Marta, what she's really, her team has been trying to accomplish, both B to C and B to B, and it speaks to data, and it talks about obviously having CRM be kind of that central nervous system so that you can actually align your departments. But then, being able to think about team. They've done a lot of work, really making certain they have the team for today and the future. They're also leveraging partners, which is also key to success. And then, having a plan. We spent time with Royal Philips actually at headquarters a number of weeks ago and they are doing this transformation, this disruptive tour with all of their top folks across, around the world that running their different departments, to really have them up and them think differently which is aligning them around that culture of looking out to the future. >> Peter: Let's talk a bit about thinking differently. And I want to use you as an example. >> Catherine: Sure. >> So your title is Customer Success. Global Vice President, Global Customer Success. What does that mean? >> Sure. I know a lot of folks, I'd like to think that, that's just a household name right now in terms of Customer Success. But I realize it's still a little new and nascent. >> We've seen it elsewhere but it's still not crystal clear what it means. >> Sure, sure. So when I think of Customer Success, the shorter answer is, we help our customers be successful. But that, what does it really mean? And when I think about the evolution of what Customer Success, the department, the profession, the role, has really come to be, it's serving a very important piece of this Cloud story. Go back a decade when we were just getting started actually operationalizing SaaS and thinking about how to actually grow our businesses, we found that there just needed to be a different way of managing our customers and keeping customers, quite frankly. Cause as easy as it is to perhaps land a SaaS customer, and a Cloud customer, because it's easier to stand them up and it's easier for them to purchase, but then they can easily leave you too. And so what we found is, the sales organization, while, obviously understands the customer, they need to go after new customers. They need to grow share. And then in addition to that, in some organizations, there still are services to obviously help our customers be successful. And that's really important, but that is statement-of-work-based. There's a start and a stop and an end to that work. And then obviously there's support that is part of a services experience, but they tend to be queue-based, ticket-based, break-fix. And what we found in all of this is, who ultimately is going be the advocate of the customer? Who's going to help the customer achieve ROI business value and help them ensure that they are managing what they've purchased and getting value, but also looking out towards the future and helping them see what's around the corner. >> Catherine I want to ask the question. One of the themes in your keynote was live in the moment every day as a modern marketing executive, build your team for today and tomorrow, and plan for the future. You mentioned Marta, who was on yesterday, as well as Kristen O'Hara from Time Warner. But she made an interesting comment, because I was trying to dig into her a little bit, because Time Warner, everyone knows Time Warner. So, I was kind of curious. At the same time, it was a success story where there was no old way. It was only a new way, and she had a pilot. And she had enough rope to kind of get started, and do some pilots. So I was really curious in the journey that she had. And one thing she said was, it was a multi-year journey. >> Catherine: Yes. >> And some people just want it tomorrow. They want to go too fast. Talk through your experience with your customer success and this transformation for setting up the team, going on the transformational journey. Is there a clock? Is there a kind of order of magnitude time frame that you've seen, that works for most companies? >> Sure. And actually I want to bring in one more experience that I know folks had here at Modern Marketing, which was, also, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he actually talked about this very thing. I think a lot of folks related to that because what he's been doing in terms of building out this community and creating crowd-sourced, or I should say, I think he would want to say community-sourced content and creativity. It was about, you can't really think about going big. Like I'm not thinking about feature film. I'm thinking about short video clips, and then you build. And I think everyone, the audience, like okay I get that. And Kristen's saying, it took many little moments to get to the big moment. I think folks want to do it all, right at the very beginning. >> John: The Big Bang Theory, just add, >> Absolutely. >> Just add water, and instant Modern Marketing. >> It is, it is. >> John: And it's hard. >> And what we have found, and this is why the planning part is so important, because what you have to do, and it might not be the marketer. The marketer, that VP of Marketing, even that CMO may know, it's going to be a three year journey. But sometimes it's that CEO, Board of Director alignment that's really required to mark, this is the journey. This is what year one's going to look like. This is what we're going to accomplish year two. There may be some ups and downs through this, because we need to transform sales, we need to transform back in operations in terms of how we're going to retire old processes and do new. And in doing so, we're going to get to this end state. But you need all of your stakeholders to be engaged, otherwise you do get that pressure to go big because, you know what Mark was saying, I've got 18 months, we need to be able to show improvement right away. >> We were talking about CIOs on another show that I was doing with Peter. And I think Peter made the comment that the CIO's job sometimes doesn't last three years. So these transformations can't be three years. They got to get things going quicker, more parallel. So it sounds like you guys are sharing data here at the event among peers >> Catherine: Yes. >> around these expectations. Is there anything in terms of the playbook? >> Catherine: Yes. >> Is it parallel, a lot of AGILE going on? How do you get those little wins for that big moment? >> So I think this is where the, what I would call, the League of Justice. You got to call in that League of Justice. For all you Superman out there. Because in many ways you're really challenged with running the business, and I think that's the pressure all of us are under. But when you think about speeding up that journey, it really is engaging partners, engaging, Oracle Marketing Cloud, our success and services team. I know you're going to be talking to Tony a little bit about some of the things we're building but that's where we can really come in and help accelerate and really demonstrate business value along the way. >> Well one more question I had for you. On the show floor, I noticed, was a lot of great traffic. Did you guys do anything different this year compared to last year when we talked to make this show a little bit more fluid? Because it seems to me the hallway conversation has been all about the adaptive intelligence and data is in every conversation that we have right now. What have you guys done differently? Did it magically just come to you, (Catherine laughing) Say, we're going to have to tighten it up this year? What was the aha moment between last year and this year? It's like night and day. >> I would like to think that we are our first and best customer, because as we ourselves are delivering technology, we ourselves also have to live what we tell our customers to do every day. Look at the data, look at the feedback. Understand what customers are telling you. How can you help customers achieve value? And we think of this as an important moment for our partners and our companies, that are here spending money and spending time to be here, achieve value. What we've done is really create an experience where it's so much easier to have those conversations. Really understanding the flow of traffic, and how we can actually ensure people are able to experience our partners, get to know them, get to know other customers. A lot of folks, too, have been saying, love keynote, love these different breakout sessions, but I want to connect with other folks going through that same thing that I am, so I can get some gems, get some ideas that I can pick up. >> And peer review is key in that. They talk to each other. >> Exactly. That's right, that's right. And so we've really enabled that, the way that we've laid out the experience this year. And I know it's even going to be better next year. Cause I know we're going to collect a lot more data. >> Well last year we talked a lot about data being horizontally scalable. That's all people are talking about now, is making that data free. The question for you is, in the customer success journeys you've been involved, what's the progress bar of the customer in terms of, because we live in Silicon Valley. So oh yeah, data driven marketer! Everyone's that. Well, not really. People are now putting the training wheels on to get there. Where are we on the progress bar for that data driven marketer, where there's really, the empathy for the users is there. There's no on that doubts that. But there's the empowerment piece in the organization. Talk about that piece. Where are we in that truly data driven marketer? >> Oh, we're still early days. It was obvious in talking to our various CMO's. We were talking about talent and the change, and what the team and the landscape needs to look like to respond to certainly what we've experienced in technology over the last number of years and then even what was introduced today. That level of, I need to have more folks that really understand data on my team but I'll tell you, I think the thing that's really interesting though about what we've been driving around technology and specifically AI. I love what Steve said, by the way, which is if a company is presenting AI as magic, well the trick's on you. Because truly, it's not that easy. So I think the thing that we need to think about and we will work with our customers on is that there's certainly a need and you have to be data driven but at the same time, we want to be innovation ready and looking and helping our customers see the future to the extent that how we think about what we're introducing is very practical. There's ways that we can help our customers achieve success in understanding their audience in a way that is, I wouldn't say, it's just practical. We can help them with use cases, and the way the technology is helping them do that, I think we're going to see a lot of great results this year. >> AI is great, I love to promote AI hype because it just makes software more cooler and mainstream, but I always get asked the question, how do you evaluate whether something is BS in AI or real? And I go, well first of all, what is AI? It's a whole 'nother story. It is augmented intelligence, that's my definition of it. But I always say, "It's great sizzle. Look for the steak." So if someone says AI, you got to look on the grill, and see what's on there, because if they have substance, it's okay to put a little sizzle on it. So to me, I'm cool with that. Some people just say, oh we have an AI magical algorithm. Uh, it's just predictive analytics. >> Catherine: Yes. >> So that's not really AI. I mean, you could say you're using data. So how do you talk to customers when they say, "Hey, AI magic or real? How do I grok that?" How do I figure it out? >> I think it's an important advancement, but we can't be distracted by words we place on things that have probably been around for a little while. It's an important way to think about the technology, and I think even Steve mentioned it on stage. But I think we're helping customers be smarter and empowering them to be able to leverage data in an easier way, and that's what we have to do. Help them, and I know this is talked a lot, not take the human and the people factor out because that's still required, but we're going to help them be able to concentrate on what they do best, whether it's, I don't want to have to diminish my creative team by hiring a bunch of data scientists. We don't want that. We want to be able to help brands and companies still focus on really understanding customers. >> You know, AI may be almost as old as Superman. >> Catherine: (laughing) I think you're right. >> Yeah, because it all comes back to Turing's test of whether or not you can tell the difference between a machine and a human being, and that was the 1930s. >> Well, neural networks is a computer science. It's a great concept, but with compute and with data these things really become interesting now. >> Peter: It becomes possible. >> Yeah, and it's super fun. But it promotes nuanced things like machine learning and Internet Of Things. These are geeky under-the-hood stuff that most marketers are like, uh what? Yeah, a human wearing a gadget is an Internet of Things device. That's important data. So then if you look at it that way, AI can be just a way to kind of mentally think about it. >> That's right, that's right. >> I think that's cool for me, I can deal with that. Okay, final question, Catherine, for you. >> Catherine: Yes. >> What's the most important thing that you think folks should walk away from Modern CX this year? What would you share from this show, given that, on the keynote, CMO Summit, hallways, exhibits, breakouts, if there's a theme or a catalyst or one? >> Peter: What should they put in the trip report? >> It's all about the people. I think that, if I were to distill it down, you think about that word bubble chart, that's people. I think that's the biggest word that came out of this. As much as technology is important, it's going to enable us, it's going to enable our people, and it's going to put a lot of attention on our talent and our folks that are going to be able to take our customers to the next level. >> And then people are the ones that are generating the data too, that want experiences, to them. >> Catherine: That's right. >> It's a people centric culture. >> Catherine: It is. >> Catherine Blackmore here on site, The CUBE, at Modern CX's The CUBE, with more live coverage here from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, live after this short break. I'd like to think that, that's just but it's still not crystal clear what it means. the profession, the role, has really come to be, And she had enough rope to kind of get started, And some people just want it tomorrow. I think a lot of folks related to that and it might not be the marketer. And I think Peter made the comment that Is there anything in terms of the playbook? about some of the things we're building and data is in every conversation that we have right now. and spending time to be here, achieve value. They talk to each other. And I know it's even going to be better next year. in the customer success journeys you've been involved, to the extent that how we think about And I go, well first of all, what is AI? I mean, you could say you're using data. and empowering them to be able to leverage data and that was the 1930s. It's a great concept, but with compute and with data So then if you look at it that way, I think that's cool for me, I can deal with that. and it's going to put a lot of attention that are generating the data too, from the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas,

Global Event Celebrating International Women's Day I'm John for your host of the Cube here in Palo Alto, California and we had a great remote guests coming in from Bahrain in the Middle East. Cather Allegheny, general manager of 9 73 Labs. Uh, thanks for coming in and and being part of the Cube our International Women's Day. You can't get any more international in Bahrain. Thank you for coming on. >>It's my great pleasure and honour to be here. John, thank you so much for this opportunity. >>Well, I'm super excited to chat with you because in our two visits with the Cube in Bahrain covering the summit there the past few years, we notice of surgeon entrepreneurship. Um, it's almost as if the region of AWS has create this revitalization and energy and vitality and and momentum around entrepreneurship. Can you >>share? What's >>the scene down there? What's the What's it like? >>Well, uh, when it comes to my country, we're lucky to have a small population. It's not that large, but we have so many creative people who is eager to try the entrepreneurial journey, and having Amazon as a data centre in Bahrain is a privilege. And they are pushing, uh, to have more entrepreneurial ideas and innovation and solutions within the ecosystem of rain. So definitely with their support, I can I can see that so many youths, they are eager to come in and contribute. >>I noticed that you're also the general manager of, uh, 9 73 labs, but also the founder of a company. So you've got two things going on here. You've got the entrepreneurial thing happening. Um, this seems to be normal. People got entrepreneurial activity and the job doing both. They're both entrepreneurial. Is that normal? >>Yes, Absolutely. Well, I started my entrepreneurial journey back in, uh, four years and I've been appointed as a general manager of 97 3 labs, which is I'm leading on digital innovation. So that compliments my passion of being an entrepreneur. And while we can acquire talented people and support them to create their own solutions the best way they can So basically, uh, following the main pillars of the lab that I'm working on, which is conducting appropriate research and data analytics, innovation and sustainability. So, uh, for my two founded cos it's not only one I've worked in Fintech and also in property as well. >>What inspired you to be an entrepreneur and technology? >>Well, I would say that my inspiration was to think outside the box, and I see problems and gaps as an opportunity. So that helps me to figure out and come up with solutions that can be beneficial for everyone. So analysing detail as well as something that I would really love. And also, um, enhancing my skills and being more creative is my inspiration. >>I know this is a lot of entrepreneur activity in Bahrain. A lot of investors are now coming into the market. Um, what are some of the things that are going on there? Can you share what the entrepreneurial scene is like there what people are working on has cloud computing accelerated that? What's what are some of the things happening there on the ground? >>Um, I would see that there is multiple competitions or hackathons run by multiple financial institutions. Uh, and also, uh, there are so many NGO s as I am a board member and technology and business society and also a member of women empowerment in the field of cheque, we are trying to motivate and accelerate the desire to be within this ecosystem of entrepreneurial journey. So, basically, uh, we have the Supreme Council of Women who is pushing as well women and ladies to be in this, uh, sector, uh, from early age from, uh, university or even high school graduates that they should start on working on their ideas and come up with solutions. So you can see that everyone is up to, uh, being part of the ecosystem by putting in their ideas. >>And the government wants to be digitally completely transformed, and >>by certain >>they're pushing it hard to >>Absolutely. Yes, we have the governmental sector trying to migrate from legacy infrastructure to the cloud. I would say, uh and it's it's more efficient for government and also to the private sector as well. >>You know, one of the things that jumped out at me when I was in my rain visiting was there was a lunch. Uh, I'm sorry. Breakfast for women in tech. And I went there because I always go to those breakfast cause I really want to see and meet people. I had to get kicked out because it wasn't a table space. So I was for all the people that were there, Um, because I was the guy that was spot for women, it was sold out, was lying and lying to get in. So there's a huge interest of women in tech. I saw that firsthand. There are more and more people want to come in. So motivating women to consider Korean tech is really the focus. What steps do you see to make that happen? How do we take that to the next level? What's your view on motivating women to get into tech? How would you talk about that? >>Well, absolutely. I think it's really crucial to have a woman contribution within the field of cheque. But I believe there is some challenges, given our cultural norms of how man perceived woman working in the field of cheque, sometimes society burden woman from, you know, pursuing her passion to be in because it's a demanding field. I would say that it's, uh, equal to the medical field. You have to keep on updating and to be aware about what's going on. Um, so basically, that might create a bit of a burden for specifically married women of looking after her husband or their families. So I think, uh, this is one of the challenges. But the steps to overcome those challenge challenges is why, uh, you know, trying to shift and change the way, uh, society think about where women should position herself and what kind of job should she should be. And, uh, So I think the other thing is by having educational curriculum that we taught in schools, teaching both genders about the importance of, uh, how we are equal and how we can complement each other in that field because the future is in technology. So the young generation should understand this very well. >>How is the women, um, entrepreneurship going? Are they being finance for their ventures out there? What's the what's the What's the momentum and progress on women starting ventures? >>Yes, absolutely. We're lucky to have our first lady, the wife of the king who is heading the Supreme Council of Women who is pushing women to create their own businesses or to come to become an entrepreneur. Also, we have financings becoming through the government with an entity called Temkin will provide different plants and support all through, not financials only, but it covers other areas of businesses as well. So financing is not a problem again for an entrepreneur. Uh, woman. As an entrepreneur, you can always seek multiple options for financing, not necessarily inside. It can be international as well. >>So a lot of good capital there also, this fellowship opportunities. I noticed you were a Halsey in, uh, fellow. The fellowship with the Halsey in organisation. Talk about that. That experience? >>Well, I really loved the experience. We started in fact, last year, and we flew to Washington in July, and we've met with Amazon people who were really supportive. We got solution architects supporting us of how to build the solution that we want to deliver. And I got my CTO to get trained by the Amazon as well. So we found so much value and the courses and the mentorship they provided, uh, and I'm really glad to be part of that family and their CEO. She said, Now, uh, for a lifetime, you are part of our family, and, you know, it's all the support that we needed to get. >>It's a great community. What advice would you give to people who are out there who want to learn and get into cloud computing and take that step towards creating value on whether it's entrepreneurial or within a company. What's the secret formula that you would say our secrets to success? >>Absolutely. I think a cloud is a a massive, and it's a brilliant opportunity for any technology to be built on myself. I believe in the cloud. Most or all of my solutions is built on cloud. And now even me leading the digital lab on building infrastructure on cloud and basically it will give you more room. Uh, identify more gaps. You do assessment. You can utilise the tools that is within cloud, which is artificial intelligence machine learning. Uh, you call it so you can seize the opportunity to the maximum, and you can skill faster. So basically, you're not limited to your, uh, country. You can go across countries as well utilising cloud >>Catherine to talk about what's next for you. What's the next step? >>Well, uh, the next step in my new role or a new job leading on a digital innovation in 973 Labs is to finalise my strategy and also to acquire talented young people And, uh, you know, go through a programme, which is I designed where they get the mentorship, the support till they get a final product that will be invested in. And they can guarantee themselves a carrier, uh, within the digital love that I'm trying to lead on. Uh, and I think the projects that will be covering not specifically only infant IQ, it could be in any other industry. So, uh, we're trying to follow the recent trends, Uh, thanks to Amazon and Google and the other companies that we can extract data and create our own reporting. So to, uh, come up where we should be investing our time. >>That's great. I wanna ask you about the demographics of the folks in Bahrain. I noticed that they're very a lot of young entrepreneurs coming up and learn a lot of them. Um, is that true? >>Yes, Uh, our population, the majority of our youth, uh and I would say, um uh, the average age is in thirties until 35 or 36. So, relatively, we have so many young people or youth who was eager to learn. But again, we need the expertise. We need older people to also mentor and coach the young generation of how they should calculate the risk and come up with a proper business models and brilliant ideas. >>Well, I'm very impressed with the folks down there, I said before the pandemic. Unfortunately, the pandemic it, But we really wanted to have a cube location there, a lot of vitality out of action, a lot of good stuff going on. Certainly with the NWS region in there, it's really create a lot of value. And so we're looking forward to hearing more. And, uh, thanks for coming on and sharing your storey with us and for the folks out there watching. What advice would you give to women who are watching around the world around entrepreneurship? What's going on from your experience? What should we be doing and talking about? What's the Storey? I'll see this theme is bias, uh, inherent bias and in the culture, um, what would you share your thoughts on to the world? >>Well, I think the only advice I can give to all of the women out there just try something new to try to solve a problem. There are so many gaps we have around. Just look around. You just take one step forward and try it. At least once in your life, you can come up with a brilliant, uh, solution that serves all humankind, not only the people of your country. So even if the road is bumpy, just be have the courage, be resilient and go for it. >>And we're all connected on the Internet. So of course, we can communicate with each other and have a good time and and grow the community. >>Mhm Yes. Hi lisa Martin here with the cube we are covering Dell technologies world, the digital event experience. I have two guests here with me today that are new to the program. So I would like to welcome David Lowe, the Director of product management for Dell Technologies. David. Welcome to the >>program. Hi, how are you >>doing well? And Catherine Ward is here as well, customer experience strategist at Dell Technologies Catherine, it's great to have you join us. Thanks. Happy to be here lisa. So we're talking about embracing as a service. That was a big announcement at Dell Technologies World as we were talking before we went live just a few months ago in the end of 2020 where the new Dell Technologies cloud console was announced. David start with our audience in terms of describing the apex council, what it is when it was launched and give us some color around that. >>Absolutely. Back in october we announced the Dell Technologies cloud console as part of unveiling the apex vision and this was really uh in response to what we heard from our customers about the need to be able to take advantage of cloud and as a service, operating models, being able to take advantage of our products and services around infrastructure in a way that really uh you know, met their needs in terms of the business results that they were trying to drive the kind of flexibility that they needed about how to get those offerings in place and be able to to run them having simplicity and how they managed those offers while also having just a greater degree of control, of course, that's afforded by having infrastructure running on premises versus uh in the public cloud. So with the apex console today, again, we're just listening to what customers say about being able to double down on that vision and provide even more functionality and capabilities on top of additional services that we're making available in the apex console today, >>Captain, let's get some point of view from the customers. David mentioned them a number of times. Obviously this is why you're doing this, but how does apex designed to help simplify operations? What are some of the things that you're hearing from the customer experience about it being able to simplify ops? >>Yeah, absolutely. So we've we've talked to many customers that's part of my team's job to ensure we're delivering a great experience. We've really heard >>that customers >>appreciate that they can now subscribe to services and and that the Dell offers. Um we've heard a lot from customers and sales folks that tells us that not every project they want to do is funded in a complex way. And so one of the great benefits of Dell clouds offers and the apex console is being able to get things in an op X way so they can pay on a subscription, uh sorry, so they can play on a subscription basis uh to meet, you know, their business needs is one major positive that we've been hearing from customers. >>One of the things that I read when apex launched a few months ago was this really as a way to demonstrate cloud as an operating model rather than a destination and lets you get both of your opinions on that and since launched what you thought, David, we'll start with you. >>Yeah, Well that's it's a great it's a great concept that customers really that really resonates with customers. So I mean, you know, cloud as an operating model has been something that many companies have moved towards over the last, you know, 10, 15 years, where there are fundamental characteristics of cloud that are defined as being on demand, being self service, providing easier access with elastic scale and then also just paying for what you use. And and and these are the things that customers really care about. And so as part of the apex vision and unveiling today in the in the apex console where offering services, for example, like apex storage services, where customers will have the ability to subscribe to that service on demand through the Apex Council in a self service way, they'll be able to take advantage of it in a way they pay for what they use because on top of a a committed storage capacity, it's an on demand usage model, uh and they have the ability to come in at any time and increase as their business demands what storage is available to them. So we really are capitalizing on those cloud characteristics that customers want to be able to take advantage of but doing so, you know, on top of uh, infrastructure products from Dell that customers have trusted for decades. >>Right. So one of the things that we've talked about so many times in the last year is the acceleration that we've seen in every industry with perspective digital transformation and seeing so many businesses in every industry pivot multiple times here. And that speed up, you know, like, you know, here we are using SAS applications to communicate and to reach customers. I'd love to know Katherine, what some of the things are that you've learned since the initial launch. Kind of given the interesting times that we're in, what are some of the things that you've learned from customer feedback that are going to be utilized to help uh, uh, kind of modify the product going forward? >>Yeah, absolutely. So one thing is customers echoing David, really value self serve. They want to be able to do things on their time when they want. And one of the great things that customers can do through the console is build solutions, choose services that best meet their needs, they don't have to involve sales, they obviously can if they want to, but they don't have to. And that is a big selling point key, you know, meets a key need of that. We've heard from customers, I'd say. The second thing that we've heard from folks is that they really like how we have set up our role based access >>and identity >>management capabilities. Uh and I'll give you an example, So there are company very large companies, let's say who may have one finance department and they are the only people who are empowered to sign off on orders, let's say. So maybe a more purchaser type role, you may have an entire separate set of folks who are more technical folks who understand how to configure an offer, how to put it all together and those, but those folks can't buy. Um And so we have built in some workflows um to help support those processes that we've heard from customers that they have, and by doing that they can ensure appropriate separation of duties according to their internal policies as well as help them get a handle on unexpected spend from I. T. Services. >>Catherine is really touching on an incredibly important point there that customers over the last 10 years as they've used cloud services from other providers. We know that the democratization of cloud, that said that anybody can come in off the street with a credit card and start using services. That's a great way for people to get up and running. But that also leads to the problem of shadow I. T. It also leads to uh you know, an unbounded expenses and and you know difficulty in managing costs and unpredictable expenditure. So we've seen over time how even other cloud providers have had to come back laser and based on customer feedback, start adding governance, start adding policies, start adding, you know budget management and spend controls, uh Start ensuring that the kind of workflow that Catherine mentioned is in place around uh you know, ordering And we decided to put that in just from day 1. So when customers come to the apex console, they're going to be coming in the context of a company or an organization where there will be users that have specific roles. And as Catherine mentioned, they'll have specific permissions that might align with their particular job function and there will be governance that an administrator can implement to ensure that only certain people can perform certain tasks, which, you know, we already know from customer feedback is incredibly important to give customers that kind of control that they might not get or that they might have been asking for from other cloud providers in order to ensure that this is truly like an enterprise grade level of servants. >>Yeah. And just to play off that David, you know, I've talked also while I also, I talked to customers a lot also make sure I interact quite a bit with our sales team so to get their views as well. And there's a university customer that we have who has this exact problem of shadow it. And they were, their goal was to unify and get all their main campuses on same system, following same policies, same procedures, same infrastructure. Um And one of the key challenges that they have is people, developers get excited, they want to build stuff and they will go to the public cloud, use a credit card for example and just get up and running. And now this company realizes that a those folks kind of going off and doing some of that on their own are actually spending more than their central it spends. So again I think it's a real world problem that we think we're we're well positioned to solve. >>Yeah, those guardrails seem really outstanding for customers to be able to get that. You both mentioned shadow I. T. And that's one of the things that we know so easy to spin up services. But yet you then disconnect I thi from different business units which is always a challenge for organizations. So having the governance and the role based access controls really provides your customers with more of a chance to, as you said I think a minute ago David consume and only pay for what they're consuming but also have that line of sight that visibility across who's using these services. What are we paying? Are we are we getting what we need and are we ensuring that we're getting more control over our environment? I can't even imagine how much more important that is these days with so many people still scattered and remote. >>Yeah and and and and and and it's it's just really part of the whole customer lifecycle as they work with our services. So after customer is able to subscribe to something like apex data storage services and after it has been deployed at their data center they'll be able to come in to the apex council, they'll be able to see information about that subscription and about the infrastructure that they're running including having health monitoring and alerts and be able to see the capacity usage of that service. Uh And with that telemetry and insight then be able to take action. Uh Perhaps as you say to you know either uh you know put in place additional controls within their teams on on spending or consumption or increase the available storage that they have to ensure that it meets uh their business needs. And and as we build out this end and life cycle within the apex console customers will see more and more features coming to help with you know tagging of expenditure for show back purpose is to simplify the way in which uh you know both I. T. Teams and financial uh personnel within a company are able to ensure that they're being responsible and and have that governance over over what's being consumed and spent. >>Yeah. Absolutely critical. Catherine talked to us about for existing Dell customers, how can they access the apex console? What's the what's the process there that you advise? >>Yeah. Great great question. So the good news is if you already have a Dell account, whether you're an existing premier customer or perhaps you visit us through Dell dot com your credentials will work. All you need to do is talk to your sales team, your sales representative and ask them to be enabled and the process typically goes that they will sales will help enable an administrator and from there the administrator at your company can start giving access and assigning those roles as as as you as you need. >>Just a little bit of a pivot on that. And what are we talking about in terms of time frame when we think of cloud services being able to spend them up knowing that there's still so much remote work going on. How quickly can Adele customer follow that process that you just mentioned and activate these services? >>Yeah, that's a great question. So our goal is to be able to, once, you know, we have your interest, we understand what you want to get you equipment and get you up and running within 14 days is our is our goal and our target. Um It's a lot depends on on what the customer needs and if they can get, you know, if they can accept delivery that quickly and all that. But but that is our that's our goal is get you up and running in 14 days. >>Excellent. That time to values David. Go ahead. >>Oh yeah, the the getting access to the council can be can be can be, you know, certainly a lot faster. But as Catherine said, you know, once you get into the console and you want to be able to consume the services, especially for those infrastructure services that are going to show up and be deployed at your data center. Uh You know, we we include features like integrated site survey that customers are going to see shortly when they're able to go through the subscription process and enter information about their physical data center. Maybe uh you know, physical access characteristics or power or networking configurations that they have So that our deployment services team knows what to expect when they show up. We can get everything wrapped and stacked and ready to go put it on the truck and have it uh you know, to the customer as quickly as possible as Catherine said, with the time to value promise of 14 days. >>Excellent. And that fast access last question David, before we wrap up, talk to us about what's next? This was only announced in the last 67 months so lots of Development and progress, lots of customer feedback helping to tune the services. What can customers expect you know going out the rest of 20 calendar year 2021 >>more. Just I mean you know we'll have access for more customers in more countries to be able to consume more services and more capabilities within the console to provide that richer and to end experience today we already have access Uh for the console within 17 countries around the world with customers from the US and. UK. and France and Germany already able to subscribe to certain services. We have access for apex data storage services and other countries uh Coming very soon. Uh So we'll be adding more countries or languages will be adding more services uh in the coming months. And as we alluded to earlier more capabilities to ensure that the end and experience that customers have crosses all of the different boundaries within their organizations and supports all of the different roles who need to be able to come in and do everything from discover services. Subscribe to them, provision, resources, uh manage, operate support and and and build solutions on on top of what they have. I'll be with you throughout the day from an amazing lineup of content, over 50 different sessions, cube tracks, keynotes, and we've got two great co-hosts here with Docker, Jenny Burcio and Bret Fisher. We have a great day planned for you. >> Guys great job getting this all together. I know how hard it is. These virtual events are hard to pull off. I'm blown away by the community at Docker. The amount of sessions that are coming in the sponsor support has been amazing. Just the overall excitement around the brand and the opportunities given this tough times where we're in. It's super exciting again, made the internet gods be with us throughout the day, but there's plenty of content. Bret's got an amazing all day marathon group of people coming in and chatting. Jenny, this has been an amazing journey and it's a great opportunity. Tell us about the virtual event. Why DockerCon virtual. Obviously everyone's canceling their events, but this is special to you guys. Talk about DockerCon virtual this year. >> The Docker community shows up at DockerCon every year, and even though we didn't have the opportunity to do an in person event this year, we didn't want to lose the time that we all come together at DockerCon. The conversations, the amazing content and learning opportunities. So we decided back in December to make DockerCon a virtual event. And of course when we did that, there was no quarantine we didn't expect, you know, I certainly didn't expect to be delivering it from my living room, but we were just, I mean we were completely blown away. There's nearly 70,000 people across the globe that have registered for DockerCon today. And when you look at DockerCon of past right live events, really and we're learning are just the tip of the iceberg and so thrilled to be able to deliver a more inclusive global event today. And we have so much planned I think. Bret, you want to tell us some of the things that you have planned? >> Well, I'm sure I'm going to forget something 'cause there's a lot going on. But, we've obviously got interviews all day today on this channel with John and the crew. Jenny has put together an amazing set of all these speakers, and then you have the captain's on deck, which is essentially the YouTube live hangout where we just basically talk shop. It's all engineers, all day long. Captains and special guests. And we're going to be in chat talking to you about answering your questions. Maybe we'll dig into some stuff based on the problems you're having or the questions you have. Maybe there'll be some random demos, but it's basically not scripted, it's an all day long unscripted event. So I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun hanging out in there. >> Well guys, I want to just say it's been amazing how you structured this so everyone has a chance to ask questions, whether it's informal laid back in the captain's channel or in the sessions, where the speakers will be there with their presentations. But Jenny, I want to get your thoughts because we have a site out there that's structured a certain way for the folks watching. If you're on your desktop, there's a main stage hero. Maybe there's some stuff you want to check out and other sessions that you want to chat and talk with the instructors, the speakers there, and then you're going to come back to us, right? But the coolest thing about as business online, is that we actually get to involve everyone, so as long as you have a computer and internet, you can actually attend DockerCon if you've never been to one before. So we're trying to recreate that experience online. Like Jenny said, the code of conduct is important. So, we're all in this together with the chat, so try to be nice in there. These are all real humans that, have feelings just like me. So let's try to keep it cool. I'm looking forward to the Microsoft Amazon sessions, which are going to be good. And there's a couple of great customer sessions there. I tweeted this out last night and let them get you guys' reaction to this because there's been a lot of talk around the COVID crisis that we're in, but there's also a positive upshot to this is Cambridge and explosion of developers that are going to be building new apps. And I said, you know, apps aren't going to just change the world, they're going to save the world. So a lot of the theme here is the impact that developers are having right now in the current situation. If we get the goodness of compose and all the things going on in Docker and the relationships, this real impact happening with the developer community. And it's pretty evident in the program and some of the talks and some of the examples. how containers and microservices are certainly changing the world and helping save the world, your thoughts. >> Like you said, a number of sessions and interviews in the program today that really dive into that. And even particularly around COVID, Clement Beyondo is sharing his company's experience, from being able to continue operations in Italy when they were completely shut down beginning of March. We have also in theCUBE channel several interviews about from the national Institute of health and precision cancer medicine at the end of the day. And you just can really see how containerization and developers are moving in industry and really humanity forward because of what they're able to build and create, with advances in technology. >> Yeah and the first responders and these days is developers. Bret compose is getting a lot of traction on Twitter. I can see some buzz already building up. There's huge traction with compose, just the ease of use and almost a call for arms for integrating into all the system language libraries, I mean, what's going on with compose? I mean, what's the captain say about this? I mean, it seems to be really tracking in terms of demand and interest. >> I think we're over 700,000 composed files on GitHub. So it's definitely beyond just the standard Docker run commands. It's definitely the next tool that people use to run containers. Just by having that we just buy, and that's not even counting. I mean that's just counting the files that are named Docker compose YAML. So I'm sure a lot of you out there have created a YAML file to manage your local containers or even on a server with Docker compose. And the nice thing is is Docker is doubling down on that. So we've gotten some news recently, from them about what they want to do with opening the spec up, getting more companies involved because compose is already gathered so much interest from the community. You know, AWS has importers, there's Kubernetes importers for it. So there's more stuff coming and we might just see something here in a few minutes. >> All right, well let's get into the keynote guys, jump into the keynote. Hi, I'm Scott Johnson, CEO of Docker and welcome to DockerCon 2020. This year DockerCon is an all virtual event with more than 60,000 members of the Docker Community joining from around the world. And with the global shelter in place policies, we're excited to offer a unifying, inclusive virtual community event in which anyone and everyone can participate from their home. As a company, Docker has been through a lot of changes since our last DockerCon last year. The most important starting last November, is our refocusing 100% on developers and development teams. As part of that refocusing, one of the big challenges we've been working on, is how to help development teams quickly and efficiently get their app from code to cloud And wouldn't it be cool, if developers could quickly deploy to the cloud right from their local environment with the commands and workflow they already know. We're excited to give you a sneak preview of what we've been working on. And rather than slides, we thought we jumped right into the product. And joining me demonstrate some of these cool new features, is enclave your DACA. One of our engineers here at Docker working on Docker compose. Hello Lanca. >> Hello. >> We're going to show how an application development team collaborates using Docker desktop and Docker hub. And then deploys the app directly from the Docker command line to the clouds in just two commands. A development team would use this to quickly share functional changes of their app with the product management team, with beta testers or other development teams. Let's go ahead and take a look at our app. Now, this is a web app, that randomly pulls words from the database, and assembles them into sentences. You can see it's a pretty typical three tier application with each tier implemented in its own container. We have a front end web service, a middle tier, which implements the logic to randomly pull the words from the database and assemble them and a backend database. And here you can see the database uses the Postgres official image from Docker hub. Now let's first run the app locally using Docker command line and the Docker engine in Docker desktop. We'll do a Doc compose up and you can see that it's pulling the containers from our Docker organization account. Wordsmith, inc. Now that it's up. Let's go ahead and look at local host and we'll confirm that the application is functioning as desired. So there's one sentence, let's pull and now you and you can indeed see that we are pulling random words and assembling into sentences. Now you can also see though that the look and feel is a bit dated. And so Lanca is going to show us how easy it is to make changes and share them with the rest of the team. Lanca, over to you. >> Thank you, so I have, the source code of our application on my machine and I have updated it with the latest team from DockerCon 2020. So before committing the code, I'm going to build the application locally and run it, to verify that indeed the changes are good. So I'm going to build with Docker compose the image for the web service. Now that the image has been built, I'm going to deploy it locally. Wait to compose up. We can now check the dashboard in a Docker desktop that indeed our containers are up and running, and we can access, we can open in the web browser, the end point for the web service. So as we can see, we have the latest changes in for our application. So as you can see, the application has been updated successfully. So now, I'm going to push the image that I have just built to my organization's shared repository on Docker hub. So I can do this with Docker compose push web. Now that the image has been updated in the Docker hub repository, or my teammates can access it and check the changes. >> Excellent, well, thank you Lanca. Now of course, in these times, video conferencing is the new normal, and as great as it is, video conferencing does not allow users to actually test the application. And so, to allow us to have our app be accessible by others outside organizations such as beta testers or others, let's go ahead and deploy to the cloud. >> Sure we, can do this by employing a context. A Docker context, is a mechanism that we can use to target different platforms for deploying containers. The context we hold, information as the endpoint for the platform, and also how to authenticate to it. So I'm going to list the context that I have set locally. As you can see, I'm currently using the default context that is pointing to my local Docker engine. So all the commands that I have issued so far, we're targeting my local engine. Now, in order to deploy the application on a cloud. I have an account in the Azure Cloud, where I have no resource running currently, and I have created for this account, dedicated context that will hold the information on how to connect it to it. So now all I need to do, is to switch to this context, with Docker context use, and the name of my cloud context. So all the commands that I'm going to run, from now on, are going to target the cloud platform. So we can also check very, more simpler, in a simpler way we can check the running containers with Docker PS. So as we see no container is running in my cloud account. Now to deploy the application, all I need to do is to run a Docker compose up. And this will trigger the deployment of my application. >> Thanks Lanca. Now notice that Lanca did not have to move the composed file from Docker desktop to Azure. Notice you have to make any changes to the Docker compose file, and nor did she change any of the containers that she and I were using locally in our local environments. So the same composed file, same images, run locally and upon Azure without changes. While the app is deploying to Azure, let's highlight some of the features in Docker hub that helps teams with remote first collaboration. So first, here's our team's account where it (murmurs) and you can see the updated container sentences web that Lanca just pushed a couple of minutes ago. As far as collaboration, we can add members using their Docker ID or their email, and then we can organize them into different teams depending on their role in the application development process. So and then Lancae they're organized into different teams, we can assign them permissions, so that teams can work in parallel without stepping on each other's changes accidentally. For example, we'll give the engineering team full read, write access, whereas the product management team will go ahead and just give read only access. So this role based access controls, is just one of the many features in Docker hub that allows teams to collaboratively and quickly develop applications. Okay Lanca, how's our app doing? >> Our app has been successfully deployed to the cloud. So, we can easily check either the Azure portal to verify the containers running for it or simpler we can run a Docker PS again to get the list with the containers that have been deployed for it. In the output from the Docker PS, we can see an end point that we can use to access our application in the web browser. So we can see the application running in clouds. It's really up to date and now we can take this particular endpoint and share it within our organization such that anybody can have a look at it. >> That's cool Onka. We showed how we can deploy an app to the cloud in minutes and just two commands, and using commands that Docker users already know, thanks so much. In that sneak preview, you saw a team developing an app collaboratively, with a tool chain that includes Docker desktop and Docker hub. And simply by switching Docker context from their local environment to the cloud, deploy that app to the cloud, to Azure without leaving the command line using Docker commands they already know. And in doing so, really simplifying for development team, getting their app from code to cloud. And just as important, what you did not see, was a lot of complexity. You did not see cloud specific interfaces, user management or security. You did not see us having to provision and configure compute networking and storage resources in the cloud. And you did not see infrastructure specific application changes to either the composed file or the Docker images. And by simplifying a way that complexity, these new features help application DevOps teams, quickly iterate and get their ideas, their apps from code to cloud, and helping development teams, build share and run great applications, is what Docker is all about. A Docker is able to simplify for development teams getting their app from code to cloud quickly as a result of standards, products and ecosystem partners. It starts with open standards for applications and application artifacts, and active open source communities around those standards to ensure portability and choice. Then as you saw in the demo, the Docker experience delivered by Docker desktop and Docker hub, simplifies a team's collaborative development of applications, and together with ecosystem partners provides every stage of an application development tool chain. For example, deploying applications to the cloud in two commands. What you saw on the demo, well that's an extension of our strategic partnership with Microsoft, which we announced yesterday. And you can learn more about our partnership from Amanda Silver from Microsoft later today, right here at DockerCon. Another tool chain stage, the capability to scan applications for security and vulnerabilities, as a result of our partnership with Sneak, which we announced last week. You can learn more about that partnership from Peter McKay, CEO Sneak, again later today, right here at DockerCon. A third example, development team can automate the build of container images upon a simple get push, as a result of Docker hub integrations with GitHub and Alaska and Bitbucket. As a final example of Docker and the ecosystem helping teams quickly build applications, together with our ISV partners. We offer in Docker hub over 500 official and verified publisher images of ready to run Dockerized application components such as databases, load balancers, programming languages, and much more. Of course, none of this happens without people. And I would like to take a moment to thank four groups of people in particular. First, the Docker team, past and present. We've had a challenging 12 months including a restructuring and then a global pandemic, and yet their support for each other, and their passion for the product, this community and our customers has never been stronger. We think our community, Docker wouldn't be Docker without you, and whether you're one of the 50 Docker captains, they're almost 400 meetup organizers, the thousands of contributors and maintainers. Every day you show up, you give back, you teach new support. We thank our users, more than six and a half million developers who have built more than 7 million applications and are then sharing those applications through Docker hub at a rate of more than one and a half billion poles per week. Those apps are then run, are more than 44 million Docker engines. And finally, we thank our customers, the over 18,000 docker subscribers, both individual developers and development teams from startups to large organizations, 60% of which are outside the United States. Now looking forward, given these unprecedented times, we would like to offer a challenge. While it would be easy to feel helpless and miss this global pandemic, the challenge is for us as individuals and as a community to instead see and grasp the tremendous opportunities before us to be forces for good. For starters, look no further than the pandemic itself, in the fight against this global disaster, applications and data are playing a critical role, and the Docker Community quickly recognize this and rose to the challenge. There are over 600 COVID-19 related publicly available projects on Docker hub today, from data processing to genome analytics to data visualization folding at home. The distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, is also available on Docker hub, and it uses spirit compute capacity to analyze COVID-19 proteins to aid in the design of new therapies. And right here at DockerCon, you can hear how Clemente Biondo and his company engineering in Gagne area Informatica are using Docker in the fight with COVID-19 in Italy every day. Now, in addition to fighting the pandemic directly, as a community, we also have an opportunity to bridge the disruption the pandemic is wreaking. It's impacting us at work and at home in every country around the world and every aspect of our lives. For example, many of you have a student at home, whose world is going to be very different when they returned to school. As employees, all of us have experienced the stresses from working from home as well as many of the benefits and in fact 75% of us say that going forward, we're going to continue to work from home at least occasionally. And of course one of the biggest disruptions has been job losses, over 35 million in the United States alone. And we know that's affected many of you. And yet your skills are in such demand and so important now more than ever. And that's why here at DockerCon, we want to try to do our part to help, and we're promoting this hashtag on Twitter, hashtag DockerCon jobs, where job seekers and those offering jobs can reach out to one another and connect. Now, pandemics disruption is accelerating the shift of more and more of our time, our priorities, our dollars from offline to online to hybrid, and even online only ways of living. We need to find new ways to collaborate, new approaches to engage customers, new modes for education and much more. And what is going to fill the needs created by this acceleration from offline, online? New applications. So stay with us and enjoy the rest of the day. We'll see you back shortly. (upbeat music) >> Hi, I'm James Governor, one of the co-founders of a company called RedMonk. We're an industry research firm focusing on developer led technology adoption. So that's I guess why Docker invited me to DockerCon 2020 to talk about some trends that we're seeing in the world of work and software development. So Monk Chips, that's who I am. I spent a lot of time on Twitter. It's a great research tool. It's a great way to find out what's going on with keep track of, as I say, there's people that we value so highly software developers, engineers and practitioners. So when I started talking to Docker about this event and it was pre Rhona, should we say, the idea of a crowd wasn't a scary thing, but today you see something like this, it makes you feel uncomfortable. This is not a place that I want to be. I'm pretty sure it's a place you don't want to be. And you know, to that end, I think it's interesting quote by Ellen Powell, she says, "Work from home is now just work" And we're going to see more and more of that. Organizations aren't feeling the same way they did about work before. Who all these people? Who is my cLancaern? So GitHub says has 50 million developers right on its network. Now, one of the things I think is most interesting, it's not that it has 50 million developers. Perhaps that's a proxy for number of developers worldwide. But quite frankly, a lot of those accounts, there's all kinds of people there. They're just Selena's. There are data engineers, there are data scientists, there are product managers, there were tech marketers. It's a big, big community and it goes way beyond just software developers itself. Frankly for me, I'd probably be saying there's more like 20 to 25 million developers worldwide, but GitHub knows a lot about the world of code. So what else do they know? One of the things they know is that world of code software and opensource, is becoming increasingly global. I get so excited about this stuff. The idea that there are these different software communities around the planet where we're seeing massive expansions in terms of things like open source. Great example is Nigeria. So Nigeria more than 200 million people, right? The energy there in terms of events, in terms of learning, in terms of teaching, in terms of the desire to code, the desire to launch businesses, desire to be part of a global software community is just so exciting. And you know, these, this sort of energy is not just in Nigeria, it's in other countries in Africa, it's happening in Egypt. It's happening around the world. This energy is something that's super interesting to me. We need to think about that. We've got global that we need to solve. And software is going to be a big part of that. At the moment, we can talk about other countries, but what about frankly the gender gap, the gender issue that, you know, from 1984 onwards, the number of women taking computer science degrees began to, not track but to create in comparison to what men were doing. The tech industry is way too male focused, there are men that are dominant, it's not welcoming, we haven't found ways to have those pathways and frankly to drive inclusion. And the women I know in tech, have to deal with the massively disproportionate amount of stress and things like online networks. But talking about online networks and talking about a better way of living, I was really excited by get up satellite recently, was a fantastic demo by Alison McMillan and she did a demo of a code spaces. So code spaces is Microsoft online ID, new platform that they've built. And online IDs, we're never quite sure, you know, plenty of people still out there just using the max. But, visual studio code has been a big success. And so this idea of moving to one online IDE, it's been around that for awhile. What they did was just make really tight integration. So you're in your GitHub repo and just be able to create a development environment with effectively one click, getting rid of all of the act shaving, making it super easy. And what I loved was it the demo, what Ali's like, yeah cause this is great. One of my kids are having a nap, I can just start (murmurs) and I don't have to sort out all the rest of it. And to me that was amazing. It was like productivity as inclusion. I'm here was a senior director at GitHub. They're doing this amazing work and then making this clear statement about being a parent. And I think that was fantastic. Because that's what, to me, importantly just working from home, which has been so challenging for so many of us, began to open up new possibilities, and frankly exciting possibilities. So Alley's also got a podcast parent-driven development, which I think is super important. Because this is about men and women rule in this together show parenting is a team sport, same as software development. And the idea that we should be thinking about, how to be more productive, is super important to me. So I want to talk a bit about developer culture and how it led to social media. Because you know, your social media, we're in this ad bomb stage now. It's TikTok, it's like exercise, people doing incredible back flips and stuff like that. Doing a bunch of dancing. We've had the world of sharing cat gifts, Facebook, we sort of see social media is I think a phenomenon in its own right. Whereas the me, I think it's interesting because it's its progenitors, where did it come from? So here's (murmurs) So 1971, one of the features in the emergency management information system, that he built, which it's topical, it was for medical tracking medical information as well, medical emergencies, included a bulletin board system. So that it could keep track of what people were doing on a team and make sure that they were collaborating effectively, boom! That was the start of something big, obviously. Another day I think is worth looking at 1983, Sorania Pullman, spanning tree protocol. So at DEC, they were very good at distributed systems. And the idea was that you can have a distributed system and so much of the internet working that we do today was based on radius work. And then it showed that basically, you could span out a huge network so that everyone could collaborate. That is incredibly exciting in terms of the trends, that I'm talking about. So then let's look at 1988, you've got IRC. IRC what developer has not used IRC, right. Well, I guess maybe some of the other ones might not have. But I don't know if we're post IRC yet, but (murmurs) at a finished university, really nailed it with IRC as a platform that people could communicate effectively with. And then we go into like 1991. So we've had IRC, we've had finished universities, doing a lot of really fantastic work about collaboration. And I don't think it was necessarily an accident that this is where the line is twofold, announced Linux. So Linux was a wonderfully packaged, idea in terms of we're going to take this Unix thing. And when I say package, what a package was the idea that we could collaborate on software. So, it may have just been the work of one person, but clearly what made it important, made it interesting, was finding a social networking pattern, for software development so that everybody could work on something at scale. That was really, I think, fundamental and foundational. Now I think it's important, We're going to talk about Linus, to talk about some things that are not good about software culture, not good about open source culture, not good about hacker culture. And that's where I'm going to talk about code of conduct. We have not been welcoming to new people. We got the acronyms, JFTI, We call people news, that's super unhelpful. We've got to find ways to be more welcoming and more self-sustaining in our communities, because otherwise communities will fail. And I'd like to thank everyone that has a code of conduct and has encouraged others to have codes of conduct. We need to have codes of conduct that are enforced to ensure that we have better diversity at our events. And that's what women, underrepresented minorities, all different kinds of people need to be well looked off to and be in safe and inclusive spaces. And that's the online events. But of course it's also for all of our activities offline. So Linus, as I say, I'm not the most charming of characters at all time, but he has done some amazing technology. So we got to like 2005 the creation of GIT. Not necessarily the distributed version control system that would win. But there was some interesting principles there, and they'd come out of the work that he had done in terms of trying to build and sustain the Linux code base. So it was very much based on experience. He had an itch that he needed to scratch and there was a community that was this building, this thing. So what was going to be the option, came up with Git foundational to another huge wave of social change, frankly get to logical awesome. April 20 April, 2008 GitHub, right? GiHub comes up, they've looked at Git, they've packaged it up, they found a way to make it consumable so the teams could use it and really begin to take advantage of the power of that distributed version control model. Now, ironically enough, of course they centralized the service in doing so. So we have a single point of failure on GitHub. But on the other hand, the notion of the poll request, the primitives that they established and made usable by people, that changed everything in terms of software development. I think another one that I'd really like to look at is Slack. So Slack is a huge success used by all different kinds of businesses. But it began specifically as a pivot from a company called Glitch. It was a game company and they still wanted, a tool internally that was better than IRC. So they built out something that later became Slack. So Slack 2014, is established as a company and basically it was this Slack fit software engineering. The focus on automation, the conversational aspects, the asynchronous aspects. It really pulled things together in a way that was interesting to software developers. And I think we've seen this pattern in the world, frankly, of the last few years. Software developers are influences. So Slack first used by the engineering teams, later used by everybody. And arguably you could say the same thing actually happened with Apple. Apple was mainstreamed by developers adopting that platform. Get to 2013, boom again, Solomon Hikes, Docker, right? So Docker was, I mean containers were not new, they were just super hard to use. People found it difficult technology, it was Easter Terek. It wasn't something that they could fully understand. Solomon did an incredible job of understanding how containers could fit into modern developer workflows. So if we think about immutable images, if we think about the ability to have everything required in the package where you are, it really tied into what people were trying to do with CICD, tied into microservices. And certainly the notion of sort of display usability Docker nailed that, and I guess from this conference, at least the rest is history. So I want to talk a little bit about, scratching the itch. And particularly what has become, I call it the developer authentic. So let's go into dark mode now. I've talked about developers laying out these foundations and frameworks that, the mainstream, frankly now my son, he's 14, he (murmurs) at me if I don't have dark mode on in an application. And it's this notion that developers, they have an aesthetic, it does get adopted I mean it's quite often jokey. One of the things we've seen in the really successful platforms like GitHub, Docker, NPM, let's look at GitHub. Let's look at over that Playfulness. I think was really interesting. And that changes the world of work, right? So we've got the world of work which can be buttoned up, which can be somewhat tight. I think both of those companies were really influential, in thinking that software development, which is a profession, it's also something that can and is fun. And I think about how can we make it more fun? How can we develop better applications together? Takes me to, if we think about Docker talking about build, share and run, for me the key word is share, because development has to be a team sport. It needs to be sharing. It needs to be kind and it needs to bring together people to do more effective work. Because that's what it's all about, doing effective work. If you think about zoom, it's a proxy for collaboration in terms of its value. So we've got all of these airlines and frankly, add up that their share that add up their total value. It's currently less than Zoom. So video conferencing has become so much of how we live now on a consumer basis. But certainly from a business to business perspective. I want to talk about how we live now. I want to think about like, what will come out all of this traumatic and it is incredibly traumatic time? I'd like to say I'm very privileged. I can work from home. So thank you to all the frontline workers that are out there that they're not in that position. But overall what I'm really thinking about, there's some things that will come out of this that will benefit us as a culture. Looking at cities like Paris, Milan, London, New York, putting a new cycling infrastructure, so that people can social distance and travel outside because they don't feel comfortable on public transport. I think sort of amazing widening pavements or we can't do that. All these cities have done it literally overnight. This sort of changes is exciting. And what does come off that like, oh there are some positive aspects of the current issues that we face. So I've got a conference or I've got a community that may and some of those, I've been working on. So Katie from HashiCorp and Carla from container solutions basically about, look, what will the world look like in developer relations? Can we have developer relations without the air miles? 'Cause developer advocates, they do too much travel ends up, you know, burning them out, develop relations. People don't like to say no. They may have bosses that say, you know, I was like, Oh that corporates went great. Now we're going to roll it out worldwide to 47 cities. That's stuff is terrible. It's terrible from a personal perspective, it's really terrible from an environmental perspective. We need to travel less. Virtual events are crushing it. Microsoft just at build, right? Normally that'd be just over 10,000 people, they had 245,000 plus registrations. 40,000 of them in the last day, right? Red Hat summit, 80,000 people, IBM think 90,000 people, GitHub Crushed it as well. Like this is a more inclusive way people can dip in. They can be from all around the world. I mentioned Nigeria and how fantastic it is. Very often Nigerian developers and advocates find it hard to get visas. Why should they be shut out of events? Events are going to start to become remote first because frankly, look at it, if you're turning in those kinds of numbers, and Microsoft was already doing great online events, but they absolutely nailed it. They're going to have to ask some serious questions about why everybody should get back on a plane again. So if you're going to do remote, you've got to be intentional about it. It's one thing I've learned some exciting about GitLab. GitLab's culture is amazing. Everything is documented, everything is public, everything is transparent. Think that really clear and if you look at their principles, everything, you can't have implicit collaboration models. Everything needs to be documented and explicit, so that anyone can work anywhere and they can still be part of the team. Remote first is where we're at now, Coinbase, Shopify, even Barkley says the not going to go back to having everybody in offices in the way they used to. This is a fundamental shift. And I think it's got significant implications for all industries, but definitely for software development. Here's the thing, the last 20 years were about distributed computing, microservices, the cloud, we've got pretty good at that. The next 20 years will be about distributed work. We can't have everybody living in San Francisco and London and Berlin. The talent is distributed, the talent is elsewhere. So how are we going to build tools? Who is going to scratch that itch to build tools to make them more effective? Who's building the next generation of apps, you are, thanks.

I know how hard it is. These virtual events are hard to pull off. I'm blown away by the community at Docker. The amount of sessions that are coming in the sponsor support has been amazing. Obviously everyone's cancelling their events, but this is special to you guys. Talk about Docker con virtual this year. >>Yeah. You know, the Docker community shows up at DockerCon every year and even though we didn't have the opportunity to do an in person event this year, we didn't want to lose the time that we all come together at DockerCon. The conversations, the amazing content and learning opportunities. So we decided back in December to make Docker con a virtual event. And of course when we did that, there was no quarantine. Um, we didn't expect, you know, I certainly didn't expect to be delivering it from my living room, but we were just, I mean we were completely blown away. There's nearly 70,000 people across the globe that have registered for Docker con today. And when you look at backer cons of past right live events, really and more learning are just the tip of the iceberg. And so thrilled to be able to deliver a more inclusive vocal event today. And we have so much planned. Uh, I think Brett, you want to tell us some of the things that you have planned? >>Well, I'm sure I'm going to forget something cause there's a lot going on. But, uh, we've obviously got interviews all day today on this channel with John the crew. Um, Jenny has put together an amazing set of all these speakers all day long in the sessions. And then you have a captain's on deck, which is essentially the YouTube live hangout where we just basically talk shop. Oh, it's all engineers, all day long, captains and special guests. And we're going to be in chat talking to you about answering your questions. Maybe we'll dig into some stuff based on the problems you're having or the questions you have. Maybe there'll be some random demos, but it's basically, uh, not scripted. It's an all day long unscripted event, so I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun hanging out in there. >>Well guys, I want to just say it's been amazing how you structured this so everyone has a chance to ask questions, whether it's informal laid back in the captain's channel or in the sessions where the speakers will be there with their, with their presentations. And even particularly around coven, um, Clemente is sharing his company's experience, uh, from being able to continue operations in Italy when they were completely shut down. Uh, beginning of March, we have also in the cube channel several interviews about from the national Institute of health and precision cancer medicine at the end of the day. And you just can really see how containerization and, uh, developers are moving in industry and, and really humanity forward because of what they're able to build and create, uh, with advances in technology. Yeah. >>And first responders and these days is developers. Brett compose is getting a lot of traction on Twitter. I can see some buzz already building up. There's huge traction with compose, just the ease of use and almost a call for arms for integrating into all the system language libraries. I mean, what's going on with compose? I mean, what's the captain say about this? I mean, it seems to be really tracking in terms of demand and interest. >>Yeah, it's, it's a, I think we're over 700,000 composed files on GitHub. Um, so it's definitely beyond just the standard Docker run commands. It's definitely the next tool that people use to run containers. Um, just by having that we just by, and that's not even counting. I mean, that's just counting the files that are named Docker compose Yammel so I'm sure a lot of you out there have created a gamma file to manage your local containers or even on a server with Docker compose. And the nice thing is, is Docker is doubling down on that. So we've gotten some news recently, um, from them about what they want to do with opening the spec up, getting more companies involved, because compose is already gathered so much interest from the community. You know, AWS has importers, there's Kubernetes importers for it. So there's more stuff coming and we might just see something here in a few minutes. >>Well, let's get into the keynote. It's the cube covering RSA conference, 2020 San Francisco brought to you by Silicon angle media. >>Hello and welcome back to the cube coverage here in San Francisco, the Moscone center for RSA Congress 2020 for all the coverage period for three days. I'm John, host of the cube. You know, as cybersecurity goes to the next level, as cloud computing goes, continues to go more enterprise, large scale AI and machine learning have become critical managing the data. We've got a great guest here from Intel, Kaz Borzynski, senior director of the AI price with Intel. Thanks for joining us. Oh thanks. So data is a huge, huge data problem when it comes down to cybersecurity, uh, and and generally across the enterprise. Now it's well known, well documented, but you're here giving a talk about machine learning privacy because everyone wants to know who the bad guys are. So do the bad guys deserve privacy? Okay, we'll get to that later. But first tell about your talk and give a talk here at RSA. >>We'll get into other stuff later. I gave a talk, so thanks for having me. I gave a talk on a whole suite of exciting new techniques known as privacy preserving machine learning. So this is a set of machine learning techniques that help people realize the promise of AI and machine learning. But we know that machine learning systems rely on underlying data to train. So how can you also respect the privacy and the security of the underlying data while still being able to train and use AI systems and just take it, where are you within the Intel sphere? Because Intel osseous surgery obviously chips and power to all the enterprises in large. Skip. How are you on the software side AI group? Explain where you are. And so I'm in the AI group at Intel, but I have the most fun job at Intel. I think so cause I work in the CTO office of the AI group, which means I get to think about more futuristic, you know, where is AI going? >>What are some of the major inflection points? One of these that we've been looking at for the last couple of years is this kind of collision course between the need for data to train machine learning systems to unlock all the power of AI, but still the need to keep data private. Yeah, and I think that's generally consistent with our editorial in our research, which is the confluence of cloud native, large scale cloud computing, multi-cloud and AI or machine learning, all kinds of coming together. Those are multigenerational technologies that are coming. So that's, this wave is big. That's right. And I think one thing that's kind of maybe underappreciated about machine learning, especially in production is it's almost always a multi-party interaction. So you'll have, let's say one party that owns data and other party may own a model. They're running a system on somebody else's hardware. So because of the nature of digital data, if you want to share things, you have to worry about what other parties may be doing with those data. >>Because you bring up a great point I want to get your reaction and thoughts on is that, is that it's multidisciplinary. Now as people aren't breaking into the field. I mean people are really excited about AI. I mean you talk to someone who's 12 years old, they see a Tesla, they see software, they see all these things, they see all this cool stuff. So machine learning, which powers AI is very enticing to anyone that's got kind of technical or nerdy background and social attracting a lot of young people. So it's not just getting a computer science degree. There's so much more to AI because you talk about why, what someone needs to be successful too. And to engage in the AI wave. You don't need to just be a code or you could be outside the scope because it's an integrated model or is it's very much, so my group at Intel is better, very heterogeneous. >>So what have got a, you know, kind of mathematicians, but I also have coders. I have, uh, an attorney who's a public policy expert. I have cryptographers. Uh, I think there's a number of ways to get involved in, in meaning my, my background is actually a neuroscience. So, um, it makes sense. Good. Stitch it all together. Yeah. Well, societal changes has to be the, the algorithm needs training they need to learn. So having the most diverse input seems to me to be a, a posture the industry is taking and what's, is that right? Is that the right way to think about it? How should we be thinking about how to make AI highly effective versus super scary? Right. Well, one of the efforts that we're making, part of my message here is that to make these systems better, generally more data helps, right? If you can expand the availability of data, that's always going to help machine learning systems. >>And so we're trying to unlock data silos that may exist across countries, across the organizations. So for example, you know, in healthcare you could have multiple hospitals that have patient data. If somehow they could pool all their data together, you would get much more effective models, much better patient outcomes, but for very good privacy reasons, they're not allowed to do that. So there's these interesting ideas like federated learning where you could somehow decentralize the machine learning process so that you can still respect privacy but get the statistical power. That's a double down on that for a second cause I want to explore that. I think this is the most important story that's not being talked about. It's nuance a little bit. Yeah. You know, healthcare, you had HIPAA, which was built for all the right reasons back then, but now when you start to get into much more of a cross pollination of data, you need to manage the benefit of why it existed with privacy. >>So encryption, homomorphic encryption for instance, data and use. Yes. Okay. When it's being used, not just in flight or being arrested becomes, now you have the three triads of data. Yes. This is now causing a new formula for encryption privacy. What are some of the state of the art mindset thinkings around how to make data open a usable but yet either secure, encrypted or protected. That's right. So it's kind of this paradox of how do I use the data but not actually get the data. You mentioned homomorphic encryption. So this is one of the most kind of leading edge techniques in this area where somehow you're able to, there are ways of doing math on the data while it stays encrypted and the answer that comes out, it's still encrypted and it's only the actual owner of the data who can reveal the answer. So it seems like magic, but with this capability you enable all kinds of new use cases that wouldn't be possible before where third parties can act on, you know, your sensitive data without ever being exposed to it in any way. >>So discovery and leverage of the days that what you're getting at in terms of the benefits, I mean use cases. So stay on that. They used cases of the, of this new idea. Yeah. Is discovery and usage. How would that work? Well, so when we talked about federated learning and pooling across hospitals, that's one set of techniques. Homomorphic encryption would be, for example, suppose that some AI system has already been trained, but I'd like to use it on sensitive data. How do I do that in such a way that the third party service isn't, you know, this what makes, I think machine learning different from different types of data. You know, security problems is that machine learning, you have to operate on the data. You're not just storing it, you're not just moving it around. So how do you, yeah, and this is a key thing. >>So I've got to ask you the question because one of the things that's a real interesting trade off these days is AI and machine learning is really can create great benefits, but also people just go the knee jerk reaction of, you know, Oh my God, it's scary. My privacy. So it's a frontline with Amazon, just facial recognition. Oh my God, it's evil. Yeah. So there's a lot of scared people that might not be informed. Yeah. How should companies invest in machine learning and AI from your opinion? On how should they think about the next 10 year trajectory starting today, thinking about how to invest, what's the right way to think about it, build a team. Yeah. What's your thoughts on that? Because, and this is the number one challenge right now. Yeah. Well I think the, uh, some of this scary issues that you mentioned, you know, there are legitimately scary. >>They're going to have to be resolved, not by companies, but probably, you know, by society and kind of our delegates. So lawmakers, regulators, part of what we're trying to do at the technical level is give society and regulators a, a more flexible set of tools around which you can slice and dice data privacy and so on, so that it's not just all or none. Right. I think that's kind of my main goal as a, as an organization. I think again, the, this idea of having a heterogeneous set of talents, you know, you're going to need policy experts and applied mathematicians and linguists and you know, neuroscientists. So diversity is a huge opportunity, very much so. Not just diversity of people, but diverse data, diverse data, diverse kind of mindsets, approaches to problems that are hard but very promising. If so. Okay. Let's flip to the other side of the spectrum, which is what should people not do? >>What does, what's a, what's a fail failure formula one dimensional thinking? What's a, what's an identification of something that's not, may not go in the right way? Well, you know, one, uh, distinguishing feature of the machine learning field, and it's kind of a cultural thing, but it's given it a lot of traction is it's fundamentally, it had been a very open culture. So there's a lot of, uh, sharing of methods. It's a very, uh, collaborative academic field. So I think within a company you want to kind of be re you want to be part of that culture too. So every company is going to have its secret sauce. It's things that it needs to keep proprietary, but it's very important for companies to engage this broader community of researchers. So you're saying, which I would want, maybe I'm what I would agree with, but I'll just say it. >>You can agree or disagree to be successful, you got to be open. If you're data-driven, you've gotta be open. That's right. There's more JD equals better data. That's why more data, more approaches to data, kind of more eyes on the problem. But you know, still you can definitely keep your proprietary, you know, it kind of forces organizations to think about what are our core strengths that we really want to keep proprietary. But then other things let's, you know, open. All right. So what's the coolest thing you've working on right now? What are some of the fun projects you guys are digging into and you've got a great job. Sounds like you're excited about it. I mean, AI I think is the most exciting thing. I mean I wish I could be 20 again in computer science or whatever field. Cause I think AI is more than a multigenerational things. >>Super exciting as a technical person. But what are you working on that you're excited about? So I'm very excited about taking some of these things like homomorphic encryption and making them much more available to developers, to data scientists because it's asking too much for a data scientist to also be a kind of a post quantum crypto expert. So we've written an open source package called H E transformer, H G for homomorphic encryption. It allows the data scientists to kind of do their normal data science and Python or whatever they're used to, but then they kind of flick a switch and suddenly their model is able to run on encrypted data. Can you just take a minute to explain why homomorphic encryption trend right now is really important? I mean, give a peek into the why because this is something that is now becoming much more real. >>Yeah. The data in use kind of philosophy. Why now? Why is it so important right now? Well, I think, uh, the, because of cloud in the, the power of cloud and the fact that you know, data are collected in one place and possibly processed in another place, you're going to have to, you know, your data are moving around and they're being operated on. So if you can know that, you know, as long as my data are moving around and people are operating on it but it's staying encrypted the whole time, you know, not just in transit, that gives a much higher level of comfort around and the applications are going to probably be onboarded. I mean you can almost imagine new applications will emerge from this application discovery cataloging and API integration points. I mean you can almost imagine the trust will go up and you can also kind of end up with these different business models where you have entities that compete in some spheres but they may decide to collaborate in other ways. >>So for example, banks could compete on, you know, lending and so on under normal activities. But in terms of fraud detection, they may decide, Hey, maybe we can make some Alliance where we cross check with each other as models on certain transactions, but I'm not actually giving you any transaction data. So that's maybe okay. Right. So that's a very powerful, it's really interesting. I mean I think the uh, the compute power has allowed, the overhead seems to be much more robust because people are working on this for in the eighties and nineties I remember. Yes. But it was just so expensive overhead while that's right. Yeah. So you bring up a great point here. So, and this is one of the areas where Intel is really pushing, my team is pushing these techniques have been around for 20 years. Initially they were maybe like 10 million times slower than real time. >>So people thought, okay, this is interesting, you know, mathematically, but not practical. There've been massive improvements just in the last two years where now things are running, you know, a hundred times slower than, than kind of un-encrypted math. But still that, that means that something that you know would take 50 milliseconds now takes five seconds. That's still not an unreasonable, you're my new friend. Now, my best friend on AI. Um, and I got a business to run and I'm going to ask you, what should I do? I really want to leverage machine learning and AI in my business. Okay, I'm investing in more tech. I got cloud and building my own software. How should I be investing? How do I build out a great machine learning AI scene and then ultimately capabilities? How should I do that? Okay, well I would start with a team that has a kind of a research mindset, not because you want them to come in and like write research papers, but the path from research into production is so incredibly short in AI. >>You know, you have things that are papers one year and they're going into production at Google search and within a year. So you kind of need that research mindset. I think another thing is that you want to, uh, you're gonna, you're going to require a very close collaboration between this data science team and your CIO and kind of, you know, systems. And a lot of the challenges around AI are not just coming up with the model, but how do you actually scale it up and you know, go to production with it and interesting about the research. I totally agree with you. I think, you know, you can almost call that product management kind of new fangled Prague product management because if it's applied research, you kind of have your eye on a market generally, but you're not making hardcore product decisions. You're researching it, you're writing it so that you got to, got to do the homework, you know, dream it before you can build it. >>Well, I'm just saying that the field is moving so fast that you're going to need on your team, uh, people who can kind of consume the latest papers. Oh, you're saying consume the research as well. Yeah, I mean if they can contribute, that's great too. I mean, I think this is this kind of open culture where, you know, people consume, they find some improvement. They can then publish it at the next year's conference. It's just been this incredibly healthy eco software. Acceleration's a big part of the cloud. Awesome. Well I really appreciate your insight. This is great topic. I could go for an hour. One of my favorite things. I love the homophobic uh, encryption. I think that's going to be a game changer. I think we're going to start to see some interesting discoveries there. Uh, give a quick plug for Intel. What are you working on now? >>What are you looking to do? What's your plans, highs hiring, doing more research, what's going on? Well, so we think that this intersection of privacy and AI is kind of at the core of, of Intel's data centric mission. So we're trying to figure out, you know, whatever it takes to enable the community, whether it's, you know, uh, optimize software libraries. It could be custom Silicon, it could be even services where, you know, we really want to listen to customers, figure out what they need. Funding. Moore's law is always going to be around the next wave is going to have more compute. It's never going away. More storage, more data. It's just gets better and better. Yeah. In fact there are 20 thousand people expected to be engaging with our livestream today. Joining us on the program is Kristina Draper, the chief technology officer at Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo, one of the sponsors, Kristina welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you so much Lisa, it's a real pleasure to be here. >> So this is the forth annual WiDS, and as I was mentioning some of the numbers, it's incredible, the momentum that this event has generated, we'd like to call it a movement. Tell a little bit about your involvement in WiDS, as well as Wells Fargo's involvement as a sponsor. >> Yes, um, so we are really honored to be able to be a part of WiDS. I was introduced to WiDS from an employee of mine, Catherine Lee, she joined our team just about a year ago, and she's been part of WiDS since the Inception. So working with Margo and the team and we believe so strongly that in the consumer bank space we have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to understand how our customers interact with Wells Fargo and that will require a discipline around data science and so we had an opportunity, and had asked this year to be an executive sponsor and we jumped at it and I think we'll continue to be here at that sponsor level in future years. >> So you've been in Wells Fargo for a long time, tell me a little bit about your background of rising to become the chief technology officer. >> Sure, thank you so much for the question. It's been an interesting journey, I haven't always been at Well. So I did a few start ups here in the Silicon Valley. Um, kind of middle of my career and I came back to Wells Fargo. Most recently, I have a responsibility for the consumer bank technology space, that's the majority of branch technology. It's all of the ATMs, the point of sale network for customers. It also is a lot of business services, so how we think about services oriented architecture to ensure that we're always thinking about our customer and their accounts, in a consistent way regardless of how customers interact with Wells Fargo. So, all channels consistently trusted, so that data set's really important. And then, I also have the customer feedback and customer complaints so the idea that from survey all the way through complaints are being able to understand how our customers are interacting with us. >> And data is an interesting topic, because it's to broad. And I think so many people now across generations understand data privacy, to some degree you can think of you know, the baby-boomers that were affected by the Facebook information and things being shared. From a financial perspective, tell as a little bit about the discipline of data science, not just from the technology background and understanding that your team needs to have, but also other skills such as empathy, communication, negotiation, how are all of those contribute to what your team is delivering? >> Yeah, I would tell you we are in the business of trust. And three years ago, after sales practice came into Wells Fargo, was a very interesting time for our company. We kind of lost our way. And the opportunity with data science is an opportunity to reestablish trust with our customers. And so, you've seen a lot of the rebranding that Wells Fargo is doing in about... We were invented in 1852, but we're reinventing ourselves now. And we have to understand our customers, we have to know our responsibilities to be that trusted advisor to really care for our customers in every interaction. And so, I would think empathy, absolutely. Trust is all about every interaction consistent every time. And so, you think about even just a personal relationship and how you establish trust. It's very hard to reestablish trust, and so for us right now, the commitment to data science is about that reestablishing trust and to really thinking about every interaction with every customer and ensuring we're getting it right. >> You've been there a long time as I've mentioned, I'd love to understand your, some of the things that you've seen along the way as technology changes in terms of more females becoming interested, as we know that there was you know, from where we were in the 80s, where it has been a downwards spiral but you were recently named one of the 50 most powerful women in technology. What are some of the things as you think of how technology in Wells Fargo is re-imagining data and trust? What are the things that you've seen in terms of the evolution of females in technology and in leadership roles? >> Sure, absolutely. Thank you so much. You know think about industry recognition, and I think about how important it is to recognize women's value in the industry. So the recognition women in technology and most powerful women for me, it's an opportunity to really demonstrate that we should be very confident in the value that we bring as leaders, and that confidence as a woman is hard to come by. I think of my own personal career and the way that doors were opened for me along the way often we are our own worst enemies we second guess ourselves, we second guess our value, and we have to really work for that seat at the table. There's certainly been, I wouldn't have come back to Wells if I didn't believed that I had the right sponsors and the right mentors that were not only willing to help me kind of see the doors to walk through but to walk through those doors. And so my coming back to Wells was really about a opportunity as a leader in technology. I just had two start ups here in Silicon Valley, and so I was invited to come back and it was really the leaders and the leadership that brought me back to Wells. I felt I could make a real impact and I think that there's, when I think about the couple of jobs I've had since my second return to Wells Fargo it's really been about impact and recognizing my voice and starting to step into that accountability. When I think about what we can do as women leaders in technology and in data science a lot of it is owning that accountability to leadership and to really kind of paving the way for leaders behind us. There comes a part in a career certainly mine, where you no longer thinking about the next job for yourself and you know, I'm really fortunate that I've been able to get to a CTO level a tech division executive level, I have, you know the recognition on most powerful woman. But I don't do that alone. I do that with a team of women and men who've helped to really create value in the space that we're in. And we're in a consumer banking space and financial services and so there's certainly a lot of places to innovate, there's a lot of places to think about how technology can help to serve a Wells Fargo customer and if you think about when you need your bank you need your bank throughout your entire life. And whether you are thinking about a home purchase, an auto purchase, college for your children, retirement, there's so many big markers in life and that's where I get excited about, not only the leadership role that I have now, but I have the opportunity to bring a team with me to contribute real value. And so that's for me what really brought me back was an opportunity to have that impact to think about data science and technology in a way that there's true visible value being added to the market place to the industry. >> So it's almost like can we have pay it forward added to, how are you using that to expand your team with the right skills and the right people regardless of gender, regardless of any of that, to continue this big movement, this re-imagination that Wells Fargo is a business in undergoing. >> Yeah, well I would tell you WiDS is one way. WiDS is certainly a tremendous network opportunity if you think about the breadth and the reach across countries, across landscapes, across geographies, this is just one example of how I think about that. There's real power in relationships. There's real power in ability to establish not only a strong industry network a strong personal brand, but also a personal network. Even in the last couple of hours, WiDS started today, so inspired by the keynote speaker, so inspired about how they're turning data science and really thinking about different problems, different ways that we can improve, not only our lives, but the lives of future generations to come. I think part of how I think about it is finding that inspiration, because we have to inspire future generations of leaders, of women, and of men to really tackle the problem and have the right skills and confidence to be able to jump into that space. >> I agree with you. I think one of my favorite things in this, theCUBE has been covering WiDS since the beginning for four years and I always love coming here because you walk in and you immediately feel inspired. But you also feel that sense of collaboration, you talked about how important that is, not just for people that are in academia but in industry as well, you know I can't do what I do, you can't be a successful CTO at anywhere, at Wells Fargo let alone, any organization, without that collaborative spirit and I think I always feel that very strongly every time I walked in the door at a WiDS event, that people, they really do live up to their mission statement which is to inspire and educate women in data science and people in data science in general. >> Yeah, and I would offer that there's a lot of magic in the empty space, so the space in between and the way I would describe that is that so you come in to WidS data conference and certainly I come from a financial services background that the primary, you know, my primary professional background has been in financial services and technology, but the problems that our future generations will face can't be solved with just one lens. You can't solve problems with just a financial services expertise or just a technical expertise. You need to really look for how do you... It's the AND, and sometimes the space in between and bringing art and science. It's an ability to bring to think across industry and to apply solutions and innovation that have been brought forward through other industries, through other companies, through other academia and thinking about how that could apply in solving the problems that we're faced with in the financial services space. And so, to me coming to WiDS conference or spending time with the women that we'll meet in the room or the men that we'll meet in the room it's really about listening to their stories, listening to their passions, thinking about the problems they're solving and stepping back and identifying well, gosh if I really turned some of the problems that we're faced with upside down and thought about it with that perspective of with that lens, and maybe invited some people to your point, the collaboration to help solve problems with us, we might come up with a better answer, it's the space that's in between that might have called the difference. >> I like that! The space in between, there's so much applicability, I mean there's 2.5 quintillion data generated everyday across every industry. Whether it's you know, personal banking information or what we eat or where we travel, we do everything through mobile these days, and companies like Wells Fargo have such potential to be able to utilize that data to you know, create solutions that helps so many people. But you're right it's what can, how can financial services and the data that you deal with and to help customers and that sense, with the opportunity to influence all these other disciplines. I think that's one of the things that excites me about data science, it's how broad and symbiotic this discipline really is. >> Totally agree with you. And I have a new leader, Jason Strle, who just came in to Wells Fargo, just over a year ago, and he talks about a vision where we are 100 percent transparent in our data with our customers, so think about that value proposition in financial services, where there's a 100 percent data symmetry. What we know, you know. What you know, we know, when you want us to know it. And that can be so powerful, and that's really how we're thinking about the transformation around technology, the investment that we're going to make in data science, an AI and machine learning, because that 100 percent data symmetry comes back to trust. If we're a 100 percent transparent with everyone of our customers about what we know think about how that establishes trust. I mean that is a rock solid foundation for trust in the future, and I think that's really something that can be very powerful if we capitalize it, but we can't to it alone, we're going to need partners. We're going to need partners like so many of the companies in the academics that are in this room today. And we'll have to reach even broader because some of the solutions won't be found if we just look internal to Wells Fargo. >> Exactly. That diversity in so many ways is so impactful. We're live here in Washington DC as Inforum has brought its show to our nation's capital. I'm John Walls along with Dave Vellante. It's now a pleasure to welcome Vice President of corporate communications Dan Barnhardt. >> Thank you. >> Hey Dan, good morning to you. >> Good morning to you. Good to see you again. >> We were kidding before we got started about why you're here in Washington. We think it's for the weather, right, because it's so nice. >> It's gorgeous. >> But there is a reason. I mean, you've released a federal product today, have an announcement we'll get to in just a moment. But about coming to Washington. You've been in New York before, you've been in New Orleans. Why DC, why now? >> Well, it's important for us to make sure that our customers can access the event. We've got more customers that came this year than came previous years, certainly, than last year. And it's important to be in a city where it's accessible for our customers not just in the US, but also from Europe and Asia Pacific, Latin America and Washington DC's very accessible. We also are one of the largest suppliers to public sector organizations. That's, uh, local, state, and federal government. We've got a particular focus on federal government and fed ramp compliance this year, which we achieved. And, so, we're here so that we can show off some of that new technology that you just mentioned. >> Yeah, what about the significance of that? Of reaching the compliance goal. And what does that mean to the business going forward? >> Well, it's yet another example of the benefits of our cloud strategy and working with the AWS beginning in 2014. Infor was the first large ISV to embrace a public cloud. And Amazon and Amazon web services in particular has been very helpful in achieving fed ramp. They have a lot of federal customers. They've got a very large federal agency with three initials that is a customer and they require compliance with all of the federal regulations that continually change and the utmost security for customers and we're able to offer that to our customers as well. >> Yeah, we were talking on the kick off about that - how you guys can draft the AWS innovations and things like fed ramp and other compliance. They were first, they were way ahead of anybody. You as an ISV, you don't have to worry about all that stuff. I mean, you've still got to connect to it, but they do a lot of the heavy lifting, so that's cool. You got some other hard news. >> Well we also are able to focus on our products by doing that. We don't have to invest in proprietary cloud infrastructure or data centers or databases. We can focus on delivering innovation in our products and functionality that makes a difference for our customers. Their business is not - their customers don't care what infrastructure they're running on, they care how they're able to provide goods and services. So Infor focuses just on delivering better goods and services for our customers. >> What Charles said at the keynote this morning - our strategy, we didn't want to compete with Google and Amazon and Microsoft for scale of cloud. That made no sense. It also made the point that when we were an on prem - exclusively on prem software company, we didn't go out and manage servers for our clients. So we don't want to do that. So, big differentiator for sure, from some of the other SAS players. >> And it's paying off now in a way that our competitors are starting to come after us when they used to not want to acknowledge us. One of our larger competitors - on premise legacy vendor - had an anti-Infor ad on their homepage. They've got cabs outside of here. >> We're talking about- - Yeah >> And then Charles said, ya know if you're - we're welcome the competition here if you'd like to see innovation in enterprise software, this is the place to be. >> Well, congratulations, right, 'cause, well, you know, when Oracle's coming at you, it means you succeeded - that's good. Um, other hard news that you guys had this week - you got true cost accounting in healthcare and some other things, take us through those. >> Well health care has been a major focus industry for us, just along with government, which we mentioned. Um, seventy plus percent of large hospitals in the United States are automated using an Infor software. And healthcare has been an industry that's undergone a lot of disruption, obviously, for the last ten, twelve years, with the Affordable Care Act and others. And we're trying to figure out - we as a society are trying to figure out - how to deliver better care to patients, that's the goal for healthcare organizations. And to do that, they need to better understand what's the cost of care. So the Infor true cost, which we announced in January and have now delivered and have customers implementing, will help our customers understand better what is the cost of the care that they're giving so that they can give better care to their patients and allocate their resources in a way that will help more people heal better and feel better. >> We heard on the intro to the keynotes today, Turing, Edison, and Coleman. It sounded like it was Charles' voiceover. I don't know if it was or not, but >> It was. >> It was. He's got the smooth, mellifluous voice. Um, last year Coleman, Catherine, Coleman, Johnson - you named your AI offering platform after her. Give us the update where you're at today, you've got some other announcements around that as well. >> We do. It's a big announcement for Coleman here. We've got the GA of Coleman digital assistant, which is - enables humans to have - everyone to have an assistant at work with them to help automate certain functions such as search and gather, which can take twenty percent of people's time just collecting the information to make a decision. But now with Coleman digital assistant being live and customers implementing and going live on it right now, they're able - users are able to ask Coleman to fetch information and deliver not only the information but predictions and smart intelligence that helps people make better decisions and be more productive. >> So we had a lot of conversation this morning about robotic process automation, which is really interesting. I mean, essentially, we're talking about software robots taking over mundane tasks to humans. Now a lot of people like to talk about how - and we talked about this in the Cube all the time - how, oh, the machines are taking away jobs, but in speaking to numerous customers about RPA, they're thrilled that they don't have to do these mundane tasks because it makes them more valuable, they're doing more interesting things, and they're getting offers from others that are asking them to do this type of automation for their company. So they're more valuable to their existing company and outside companies. So, RPA - hot topic. You guys are leaning in hard. >> We definitely are. We definitely believe that there are jobs that - there are functions that can be better served by automation, particularly search and gather that we mentioned. There are multiple functions that will always be done by people. Human interaction is not going to change so we are looking to have a digital assistant make productivity better. Productivity is a function of being able to do more, having more workers, and we'd like to do both with this. We'd like people to be more productive using artificial intelligence assistance. And, also, a conversational user experience with software will make it easier and less intimidating for a lot of people to interact with technology at work. And we think that will also help people be able to be more productive in their jobs and have more people able to take more jobs that right now or in the past have required a level of technical expertise that you won't need when you can simply ask the computer to do something for you using your own conversational language. >> Some major data points - excuse me - >> That's okay. that came out of the keynote this morning - one is that there are now more job openings than there are unemployed individuals and productivity, even though the tech spending is booming, it doesn't show up in the productivity numbers. We saw this actually, you know, a couple decades ago in the nineties. And all of a sudden you saw this massive productivity boom. I've predicted that with automation and artificial intelligence you're going to see something similar. It seems like Infor's on a mission - that human potential tagline - on a mission to really drive that productivity and help close those gaps. >> We definitely are. Our tagline is "design for progress" and we are looking to promote progress around the world and do what we can in order to help human progress and the theme at Inforum is human potential and that's what we're looking to do here. We have seen a lot of productivity growth in people's personal lives. I now - I don't know how to set a timer to cook anymore, I just ask Alexa to do it, but we haven't seen that at enterprise yet. So we're bringing consumer grade technology that people have gotten used to in their everyday lives but they don't see at the office. We're bringing it to the office to help make them equally as productive as they are in their personal lives. >> Yeah, that's what I wanted to hit on, actually, was the theme of the show. We're talking about human potential and which Hervan Jones talking about that, you know, from a personal mission statement if you want - that's the way he worded it. But, what's the broad scope of that in terms of how you apply that thematically throughout the company when you talk about human potential, because it's just not you, obviously you're trying to do that for your clients, you're trying to do that for the people they serve, do it for taxpayers, right, through the federal sector. But talk about that from the thirty thousand foot level about human potential - unlocking that and how Infor totally is, I guess, trying to illustrate that or put that in place. >> Certainly. The first thing I would mention is our human capital management. Infor is a very large provider of HR software - there's others that are perhaps better known, but Infor has many customers that are using our HR software, but they're also using our software for other key functions. And by integrating those two things, we're able to help people be their best self at work. Because it's not just the HR management, but the HR system knows what you're working on, they can help with professional development, and talent management, and align that to the business processes that the company has. We're also looking to engage workers. As you mentioned, there are more job openings than there are unemployed people that we believe seeking employment right now, but they're not very engaged. So we're hoping to have technology and learning management to help engage more workers. And then we'd also like to increase new business creation. One of the things that Charles mentioned that slowed down is the introduction of new businesses and small businesses. We believe one of the reasons for that is that there is so much business automation that goes on that in order to achieve that to be competitive requires so much capital investment that it makes it difficult to start a new business. But if we're able to automate a lot of that business, we're able to make it really easy through Infor cloud suite for new business starting, we feel like we'll be able to help entrepreneurs generate new businesses which will employ more people and offer more engaging and rewarding jobs and help fill some of those gaps that we have. >> We've talked a lot about AI - not just some magic thing that you throw at your business - it has to be operationalized and the likely way in which organizations are going to consume AI is it's going to be infused in applications. And this is exactly what your strategy it, isn't it? >> It is. The artificial intelligence is only going to be as smart as the amount of data that it can access and that it can analyze. It doesn't have a brain, it looks at data and learns from that data and where it tells you. And Infor has access to data that very few companies have - mission critical data, ERP, data manufacturing, distribution - core processes that we're able to put in the cloud, and not just in the cloud, but in a multi-tenant cloud environment where it can be drawn from analytics, from our burst analytics engine. And then, Coleman can make decisions based on that data - not only from within the enterprise but across the network using GT Nexus commerce network. >> Yeah, so we're hearing a lot about HCM, of course, at this show, you know, human potential, fits into talent management, HCM. You guys have a very competitive product there, it's sort of a knife fight with some of the large SAS players, but I was excited to see so much attention paid to HCM as a key part of your SAS portfolio - your thoughts? >> I do, I agree with you and I think one of the differentiating points that we just mentioned was that Infor HCM also connects to Infor systems that automate core business processes. So it's not just about those business processes, but also knowing who the people are that work on them and helping companies navigate. So much time is wasted from what we would call tribal knowledge - an employee getting up to speed or figuring out how to navigate inside an organization, particularly a large enterprise. And Infor HCM can help make that easier, but they can do that while attached to a business process so that everything can move faster and more efficiently for the customer. >> I wonder if you could comment, Dan, on this notion of best of breed versus a full suite. It seems like - so for decades, there's been this argument of oh, best of breed point products will sometimes win but full suite, people want a single throat to choke and that integration - It seems like with your micro-vertical strategy you're trying to do both - be both best of breed and have a full suite across the enterprise application portfolio. Is that right, you know, do you feel like you guys are succeeding at that, uh where do you think you fit in that whole spectrum? >> That is correct, and it's one of the things that we're able to do because of our cloud strategy - is to offer the complete suite and the artificial intelligence that comes on top of it. In the past, when there wasn't an artificial intelligence layer, there wasn't the machine learning that needed to draw from all of that data, best of breed individual applications would work. But now that we're trying to pull data together so that you can make more intelligent and you get actionable insights that let you make more intelligent decisions, that requires an integrated suite. And that can be done now in a multi-tenant cloud environment that couldn't be done before. >> The other thing I would observe - we talked about this, John - is - >> I'd also really quick just add that I think that that's proving to be correct in the amount of growth that we're seeing. Infor is significantly outgrowing from a revenue perspective. Oracle, more than forty percent last year, more than double the rate of growth of SAP and our growth rate for cloud applications is up there with work day which is setting the bar for cloud software companies. >> Yeah, that's true, that's a great point. I mean work day has set the bar and this is an example of what was essentially a narrow point product there to, of course, trying to get into other spaces. Of course, SAP and Oracle always have had a large suite. Your strategy has seemed to be working in terms of being a place where a customer can come in and access a lot of different functionality. The other thing that we heard today - a year in - is the Koch Industries investment. I was noticing that you now see Accenture here, you see Grant Thorton, Deloitte- >> Capgemini >> Yeah, Capgemini - these people are taking notice of - I would imagine Koch Industries does a lot of business with those guys and one of the gentlemen from Koch told me last year - said "Hey, we're going to expose these SI's to the Infor opportunity." It seems like it started to happen and I've heard that there's been several large deals that they've helped to catalyze, so it's great to see that presence here. Talk a little bit about the Koch Industries dynamic and what that's brought to the table. >> Well, the Koch relationship for Infor has been so helpful. First, obviously, there's a large infusion of cash from the investment. It was 2.5 billion dollars - one of the largest tech investments that wasn't an acquisition in history. And we're able to use that capital to increase more functionality. Not only that, but Infor has an industrial background. The majority of our customers are in manufacturing or distribution - industries that Koch Industries is a big player in. So not only do we have a great partner, but we have a living lab in one of the world's best and most efficient companies with which to develop our software, implement our software, and test our software. And we've got a willing partner in Koch that can do that and provide a lot of that expertise. >> I was telling Dave that that's what really struck me listening to the keynote was that - yeah - it's this wonderful symbiotic relationship and they gave you money - that's nice, right - but you have an opportunity now to roll out services, products, experiment a little bit. >> We do. >> See how it works within the Koch family, if you will, before you take it out further and so you've got this great test lab at your disposal that you didn't have before. >> And like Infor, Koch is a private company, so we don't feel the same pressure to provide quarterly return to shareholders that public companies do. So we're able to invest more of our revenue in development and R and D in ensuring that our products are going to deliver the best experience and the best functionality for our customers. >> Well, to me, the key for Infor - a key - is you've got a large install base and you're trying to get that install base to come to a more modern, SAS-like, cloud-like platform. To do that, you got to be relevant. So, the stuff like Coleman, the burst acquisition, your micro-verticals - those are all highly relevant. You know, your ability eliminate custom mods because you go that last mile. Highly relevant to companies that have to place a bet. Now, when they have to move to this new world, you know, others are going to try to grab them, so you got to hang on to them. To me, relevance, and showing a road map, and showing an investment, and things like R and D, is critical - your thoughts? >> I agree with you, I think that's the reason that we're seeing those large global system integrators partner with Infor now and develop practices that Accenture and Deloitte, Grant Thornton, and Capgemini, that will implement Infor software at their customers. They're having the demand from the customers that they're working with, including up to the largest of enterprises, for Infor software, just simply because we are able to automate processes and help them get to a level of automation that will let them compete in the digital era. There are companies all over are fearing that they're going to be disrupted by a digital, native competitor or a digitally enabled competitor. I am your host, Rebecca Knight. We have a great panel today. Uh, three distinguished guests, Jeanette Epps, an aerospace astronaut. Uh, an engineer at NASA, Mimi Valdez, a executive producer on the film, hidden figures and Christina DOJ who is a, I want to call her a rocket scientist. She will not let me, she's an electrical engineer at, at, at NASA. Thank you so much for joining me. Hey Jeanette. I want to start with you. Um, recently president Obama has said we're gonna put men on Mars, men and women, men and women on Mars. How realistic is that? I mean, it's exciting for the, for the rest of us, non astronauts to hear this is, is it realistic? >>It is realistic. And one of the things I love that he, he did that was that it gives a national initiative to go back to Mars. And so that means that people will get more involved in STEM careers, especially girls will get more involved. And it's kinda like, you know what JFK did back in the 60s to give us that push a goal, an end goal to do something. Great. >>And do you think that, you know, he said by 2030, it's not very long from now. I mean, is it going to happen? I mean, what's, >>well right now a witness is working on is we have the NASA Orion program and it's a, uh, a power light capsule that will be launched off of one of the largest rockets bigger than the Saturn five or as big. And so that the mission of NASA, Orion is to take us beyond low earth orbit and go deeper into space. So we're looking at NASA, Orion, potentially maybe being the ship that will go to Mars and you know, maybe we have more work to do, but all of getting the nation onboard with going to Mars will inspire a new generation to do great things that will help us to get to Mars. Even >>Obama has said he loves science as a kid. That was his favorite subject in school. And do you think that it will have this galvanizing effect of, as you said, making sure more little boys and girls are studying STEM? >>Well, I've seen it already with some of the tweets and different things, questions that kids ask me nowadays. I think every kid has in their heart this goal to go to Mars now. And um, I can't go to a conference or anywhere without, uh, some young child asking about Mars and what, what are, how are we going to get there? When are we going to get there? And you know, I think one of my jobs is to inspire them to get involved in STEM and help us to get to Mars. There's a lot of technology that we need to develop and produce so that we can get astronauts to live longer away from the earth surface. We have the propulsion system that can get them there faster and bring them back home long. Will it take, well, it depends on the propulsion system that we developed. So there's a number of things that we're working on to make sure that what president Obama has said will get us to Mars in the 2030s if it's pushed out to a little later, that's fine. We're working on it and we're, we're going forward with them. >>Mimi, I want to talk to you now about the film hidden figures. Uh, we'll be out in some theaters and Christmas wide release in January. It is the story of black women mathematicians working in the 1960s at NASA. How did you find out about this story? Well, I give credits at Donna gelato, one of the producers on the film who optioned the book when it was a book proposal. So before the book was even written, she optioned this the story, and it's just this amazing story that the world doesn't even know about. We all know about John Glenn's mission. He came back a national hero. It was a moment in history that galvanized the world. You know, America winning the space race. But we don't know the story of all these brilliant mathematicians, all these women who actually will really responsible Katherine Johnson specifically who hand calculated those numbers for his cause. >>Everybody, I mean, I think this is such an amazing thing to do. And, and again, we just don't know her story. And as well as Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson, I mean, so many women that worked at NASA that were just, um, they were hidden. You just don't know their stories. So, so the film tells their story, it tells their, um, it tells what they did, how they helped John Glenn. Did John Glenn appreciate that John Glenn actually would not go into space unless Katherine double checked the numbers. Like he wanted her to actually, you know, he, he, he trusted her because this is when the IBM computers were first coming into NASA. So they had started asserted use that and he was like, Hmm, I, I need Catherine to check the numbers before I go into say they were friends, professional colleagues. I mean he just knew who, you know, obviously she, she was really responsible and sort of that whole mission. >>And, and you know, for him it was just sort of like, eh, these computers thing, this was like a new thing at NASA. He's like, I need a human to make sure that these numbers are right. Right. Yeah. So we're excited about the film. Who's in it? Taraji P Henson plays captain Johnson. Octavia Spencer, please. I'm Dorothy Vaughan and Janell Monae. Um, she's a, uh, a musician. This is sort of her first really big role and she plays Mary Jackson. Kevin Costner is the head of the space station. Um, we have really great actors, but I think what was really important to everyone who participated in the film was everyone understood the importance of the story and wanting to make sure that we got it right. And also, you know, movies are supposed to be entertaining, but when they can be also inspirational and educate in some way, the fact that some young girls somewhere may see this movie and decide to pursue a career in math or science or any of the STEM careers is really gratifying to us because that's what we would love to accomplish. >>You know, Christina, you have been at NASA for nine years. Uh, tell me about your style, how you got, how you got to NASA in the first place. So I've always loved space since I was like a young child. I was in fifth grade when I told my parents that I wanted to work for NASA. So really since that point, like that was, you know, my dream. And so I, you know, pursued the math and science. Those were some of my favorite subjects. Um, luckily I had some supportive parents who really like saw that desire in me and kind of nurtured and encouraged me to, Hey, if that's what you want to do, then you go for it. We'll do whatever we can. Um, and then I came across some NASA opportunities in high school. Um, and one of the programs was the high school aerospace scholars program. >>And in that program I kinda got a glimpse into what it was like to be an engineer, to work at NASA. I got to speak with, you know, fight directors and um, flight controllers. And there's so many people who contribute to the space program. And that experience really solidified my desire to pursue STEM, STEM. Um, so I started to electrical engineering and then from there, um, you know, did the internship at NASA and I've enjoyed my career so far. It's been a, it's been a great experience. And so you work on the jet propulsion system of spaceships. Um, I work Lena. Um, I work on the power systems power systems. So you are, what do you do? So, um, as an electrical engineer on power systems, I work on the design of the power system testing. Um, basically everything on the spacecraft is going to need power. >>So I'm responsible for how I need to provide power, how much, um, when we talk about going to Mars, that's a, that's a long duration mission and power is something that, um, you have to budget for. So we need to advance that technology to support these missions that, um, our administration has said we want to go there. How are y'all going to accomplish this? So there's a lot of um, design hands on work and it's, you know, it's a challenge. But I mean, together as a team, we can, I believe that will, you know, meet that goal and be able to deliver a power system that will take us to Mars. So this is a question for rip for really all of you. You're an astronaut, you were working at NASA, you just made a movie to encourage young women to, to, to, to get into the STEM field. Why is it NASA recruiting here at, at, at Grace Hopper and, and should it be, do not, do you want to take this? >>Well, that's a good question. It's not that I'm mass and I don't, it's not that I don't think NASA has a desire to recruit here. I think there's recruiting times where people come out and do that. But I think I'm, one of the things that we do in the astronaut Corps, we try to go out and attend conferences like that and try to inspire students to be interested in NASA to understand what NASA is doing, to understand, you know, the shuttle retired. But we're still flying. In fact, when I fly to space and hopefully in 2018 I'll fly with the Russians. But in the meantime, NASA's building two shadows that would take astronauts to the international space station and NASA, Orion, that'll take us deeper into space. So we want to try to inspire with our stories and get people interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and now even the arts, the arts play a big part of this. The arts play a big part of the well, yeah, I think I'm as a scientist and looking at patterns and things like that, there's a lot of um, people who, um, begin to work in the arts, even if it's building things with their hands and making, sculpting things, painting things. And so there's a lot of artwork that comes into play in science that is >>really refreshing, exciting, count, counterintuitive. I mean, what would you say are the ways we've talked about getting them, getting them interested through, through film. Um, talking about, uh, Obama making this, this grand announcement and Treme, what are some other ways that we can get the next generation into this field? Well, representation is obviously important. I think when people get to see images in the media of these different fields and all the possibilities, I mean every kid on this planet is obsessed with their phone, maybe not realizing like the importance of these STEM careers that are making these phones even possible or even exist. And I think the more that we can expose these careers and all these possibilities, I think it will just be just more beneficial just for humanity in general. I mean, as we know, nothing in this world can exist without math. >>Nothing. So the more that we can sort of encourage young people to see what an incredible career this is in all the possibilities that go into it, I just think we'll be better off as a nation and as a, you know, just globally as a world. Jeanette, I mean, do you have any thoughts about how, what you would advise someone? I mean you started at NASA nine years ago. So I mean, as an engineer I feel like, I mean I am making some contribution, but really the way I feel like I have more impact is through mentoring and you know, participating in those outreach type of activities for, uh, younger students like K through 12. And then also, um, you know, undergraduate like where they're really like trying to figure out what are the career options and STEM. And so that's how I feel I can have an impact there. >>And these movies help because there's a surge of like, like it's inspirational for young students to see this and be like, Oh, I never knew that that was an option. And so we get outreached to NASA, um, our request to, you know, interact with, uh, local schools and communities and kind of, um, you know, do all my lessons or just teaching with them, just talking about kind of like what the career is like. So, um, I mean I hoping that I can contribute in that way for younger, younger people. Janette are, you are an impressive astronaut, but you are also known as a black woman astronaut. Yeah. D do you do, do you bristle at that or do you embrace it? What, what do you, how, what's the responsibility? >>Oh, I totally embrace it. You know, I'm young ladies always ask me, did you have a problem being a black woman and engineering? And I always tell them that, um, I don't have a problem with being a black woman. And if other people do, then that's their problem. I totally embrace it because I'm, one of the things that I didn't realize was that, um, there's still a need to have positive role models and images of yourself. You know, growing up, my mom never taught my twin sister and I that you couldn't do something because you are a female or Brown. But there are a lot of young ladies that actually do experience that. And so having a positive roam out of it, show them that, Hey look, if I can do this, you can do this too. There's no reason you shouldn't be doing this right now yourself. >>So you are a role model. And how do you then also make sure that it's active role modeling and not just sort of standing on a pedestal of. >>One of the things I like to do is like Catherine Johnson and these great ladies that, you know, without them I, you know, I wouldn't be here is you have to do well and you have to perform well. You have to do the same work that your colleagues are doing and don't do less and don't accept less either. And when it comes to the hard work, put in the time, do the work, complete the tasks and make sure you're, you're representing yourself and your group well and you don't want to be accounted as well. You know, she's the one that we've got to help and we've got to do this, but you want to be a contributing member to every group that you're a part of and completing the tasks, doing the same work if not better. I like to say do better work, but you know, you want to be a part of the. >>Yeah. But that puts so much pressure too because it is, it's, it's be a contributor, but also don't mess up because you are under a microscope to some degree because those are, >>you know, messing up isn't, isn't. Um, failure is never, um, should never be. If it's unintentional, that's okay because you always learn from your mistakes and you have to forgive yourself and keep moving forward. If you stop right there because of a failure, um, you wouldn't go anywhere. We all fell. And it's how you respond to it. That matters. >>Yeah. Every failure is an opportunity to learn. And I think, um, you know, yeah. You can't be scared. I mean, the first and foremost is just doing a good job that, cause once, if you're just dedicated and focused on that, then I think great things can happen. And then failure is really a, a buzzword in Silicon Valley too. Right now. It's a fail fast. Um, and this idea, as you were talking about that it's your response to failure that makes a difference. Yeah. And NASA, I became familiar with this famous phrase of failing forward, meaning that yes, you're going to encounter problems, but if you are learning from the, if you're making improvements, you can design something better. So we call it failing forward. And that concept has, I've embraced that comset and it's, you know, I've encountered many failures. I mean, designing new hardware. It's not gonna, you know, work right off the box. And I'm kind of embracing that idea that it's a learning experience. As long as you don't give up as if you're applying what you learned, then that is not a failure. Christina, this is great. Christina DOJ, Mimi Valdez, Jeanette Epps.
