I'm John for your host, Michael Mike Miller here, director of machine learning thought leadership with AWS. Great to see you again. Yeah. Give alumni welcome back here. Back every time we got deep racer, always to talk >>About, Hey John, thanks for having me once again. It's great to be here. I appreciate it. >>So I want to get into the deep racer in context here, but first re Mars is a show. That's getting a lot of buzz, a lot of press. Um, not a lot of news, cuz it's not a newsy show. It's more of a builder kind of a convergence show, but a lot is happening here. It's almost a, a moment in time that I think's gonna be one of those timeless moments where we're gonna look back and saying that year at re Mars was an inflection point. It just seems like everything's pumping machine learning, scaling robotics is hot. It's now transforming fast. Just like the back office data center did years ago. Yeah. And so like a surge is coming. >>Yeah. >>What, what's your take of this show? >>Yeah. And all of these three or four components are all coming together. Right. And they're intersecting rather than just being in silos. Right. So we're seeing machine learning, enabled perception sort of on robots, um, applied to space and sort of these, uh, extra sort of application initiatives. Um, and that's, what's really exciting about this show is seeing all these things come together and all the industry-wide examples, um, of amazing perception and robotics kind of landing together. So, >>So the people out there that aren't yet inside the ropes of the show, what does it mean to them? This show? What, what, what they're gonna be what's in it for me, what's all this show. What does it mean? >>Yeah. It's just a glimpse into where things are headed. Right. And it's sort of the tip of the iceberg. It's sort of the beginning of the wave of, um, you know, these sort of advanced capabilities that we're gonna see imbued in applications, um, across all different industries. >>Awesome. Well, great to have you in the cube. Every time we have an event we wanna bring you on because deep racers become a, the hottest, I won't say cult following because it's no longer cult following. It's become massive following. Um, and which started out as an IOT, I think raspberry pie first time was like a, like >>A, we did a little camera initially camera >>And it was just a kind of a fun, little clever, I won't say hack, but just having a project that just took on a life OFS own, where are we? What's the update with racer you're here with the track. Yeah, >>Possibly >>You got the track and competing with the big dogs, literally dog, you got spot over there. Boston dynamics. >>Well we'll, we'll invite them over to the track later. Yeah. So deep razor, you know, is the fastest way to get hands on with machine learning. You know, we designed it as, uh, a way for developers to have fun while learning about this particular machine learning technique called reinforcement learning, which is all about using, uh, a simulation, uh, to teach the robot how to learn via trial and error. So deep racer includes a 3d racing simulator where you can train your model via trial and error. It includes the physical car. So you can take, uh, the model that you trained in the cloud, download it to this one 18th scale, um, kind of RC car. That's been imbued with an extra sensor. So we have a camera on the front. We've got an extra, uh, Intel, X, 86 processor inside here. Um, and this thing will drive itself, autonomously around the track. And of course what's a track and uh, some cars driving around it without a little competition. So we've got the deep racer league that sort of sits on top of this and adds a little spice to the whole thing. It's >>It's, it's like formula one for nerds. It really is. It's so good because a lot of people will have to readjust their models cuz they go off the track and I see people and it's oh my, then they gotta reset. This has turned into quite the phenomenon and it's fun to watch and every year it gets more competitive. I know you guys have a cut list that reinvent, it's almost like a, a super score gets you up. Yeah. Take, take us through the reinvents coming up. Sure. What's going on with the track there and then we'll get into some of the new adoption in terms of the people. >>Yeah, absolutely. So, uh, you know, we have monthly online races where we have a new track every month that challenges our, our developers to retrain their model or sort of tweak the existing model that they've trained to adapt for those new courses. Then at physical events like here at re Mars and at our AWS summits around the world, we have physical, uh, races. Um, and we crown a champion at each one of those races. You may have heard some cheering a minute ago. Yeah. That was our finals over there. We've got some really fast cars, fast models racing today. Um, so we take the winners from each of those two circuits, the virtual and the physical and they, the top ones of them come together at reinvent every year in November, December. Um, and we have a set of knockout rounds, championship rounds where these guys get the field gets narrowed to 10 racers and then those 10 racers, uh, race to hold up the championship cup and, um, earn, earn, uh, you know, a whole set of prizes, either cash or, or, you know, scholarships or, you know, tuition funds, whatever the, uh, the developer is most interested >>In. You know, I ask you this question every time you come on the cube because I I'm smiling. That's, it's so much fun. I mean, if I had not been with the cube anyway, I'd love to do this. Um, would you ever imagine when you first started this, that it would be such so popular and at the rise of eSports? So, you know, discord is booming. Yeah. The QB has a discord channel now. Sure, sure. Not that good on it yet, but we'll get there, but just the gaming culture, the nerd culture, the robotics clubs, the young people, just nerds who wanna compete. You never thought that would be this big. We, >>We were so surprised by a couple key things after we launched deep racer, you know, we envisioned this as a way for, you know, developers who had already graduated from school. They were in a company they wanted to grow their machine learning skills. Individuals could adopt this. What we saw was individuals were taking these devices and these concepts back to their companies. And they're saying, this is really fun. Like we should do something around this. And we saw companies like JPMC and Accenture and Morningstar into it and national Australia bank all adopting deep racer as a way to engage, excite their employees, but then also create some fun collaboration opportunities. Um, the second thing that was surprising was the interest from students. And it was actually really difficult for students to use deep racer because you needed an AWS account. You had to have a credit card. You might, you might get billed. There was a free tier involved. Um, so what we did this past year was we launched the deep racer student league, um, which caters to students 16 or over in high school or in college, uh, deep Razer student includes 10 hours a month of free training, um, so that they can train their models in the cloud. And of course the same series of virtual monthly events for them to race against each other and win, win prizes. >>So they don't have to go onto the dark web hack someone's credit card, get a proton email account just to get a deep Razer that's right. They can now come in on their own. >>That's right. That's right. They can log into that virtual the virtual environment, um, and get access. And, and one of the other things that we realized, um, and, and that's a common kind of, uh, realization across the industry is both the need for the democratization of machine learning. But also how can we address the skills gap for future ML learners? Um, and this applies to the, the, the world of students kind of engaging. And we said, Hey, you know, um, the world's gonna see the most successful and innovative ideas come from the widest possible range of participants. And so we knew that there were some issues with, um, you know, underserved and underrepresented minorities accessing this technology and getting the ML education to be successful. So we partnered with Intel and Udacity and launched the AI and ML scholarship program this past year. And it's also built on top of deep Bracer student. So now students, um, can register and opt into the scholarship program and we're gonna give out, uh, Udacity scholarships to 2000 students, um, at the end of this year who compete in AWS deep racer student racers, and also go through all of the learning modules online. >>Okay. Hold on, lets back up. Cuz it sounds, this sounds pretty cool. All right. So we kind went fast on that a little bit slow today at the end of the day. So if they sign up for the student account, which is lowered the batteries for, and they Intel and a desk, this is a courseware for the machine learning that's right. So in order to participate, you gotta take some courseware, check the boxes and, and, and Intel is paying for this or you get rewarded with the scholarship after the fact. >>So Intel's a partner of ours in, in putting this on. So it's both, um, helping kind of fund the scholarships for students, but also participating. So for the students who, um, get qualified for the scholarship and, and win one of those 2000 Udacity Nanodegree scholarships, uh, they also will get mentoring opportunities. So AWS and Intel, um, professionals will help mentor these students, uh, give them career advice, give them technical advice. C >>They'll they're getting smarter. Absolutely. So I'm just gonna get to data here. So is it money or credits for the, for the training? >>That's the scholarship or both? Yes. So, so the, the student training is free for students. Yep. They get 10 hours a month, no credits they need to redeem or anything. It's just, you log in and you get your account. Um, then the 2000, uh, Udacity scholarships, those are just scholarships that are awarded to, to the winners of the student, um, scholarship program. It's a four month long, uh, class on Python programming for >>AI so's real education. Yeah. It's like real, real, so ones here's 10 hours. Here's check the box. Here's here's the manual. Yep. >>Everybody gets access to that. That's >>Free. >>Yep. >>To the student over 16. Yes. Free. So that probably gonna increase the numbers. What kind of numbers are you looking at now? Yeah. In terms of scope to scale here for me. Yeah. Scope it >>Out. What's the numbers we've, we've been, uh, pleasantly surprised. We've got over 55,000 students from over 180 countries around the world that have signed up for the deep racer student program and of those over 30,000 have opted into that scholarship program. So we're seeing huge interest, um, from across the globe in, in this virtual students, um, opportunity, you know, and students are taking advantage of those 20 hours of learning. They're taking advantage of the fun, deep racer kind of hands on racing. Um, and obviously a large number of them are also interested in this scholarship opportunity >>Or how many people are in the AWS deep racer, um, group. Now, because now someone's gotta work on this stuff. It's went from a side hustle to like a full initiative. Well, >>You know, we're pretty efficient with what we, you know, we're pretty efficient. You've probably read about the two pizza teams at Amazon. So we keep ourselves pretty streamlined, but we're really proud of, um, what we've been able to bring to the table. And, you know, over those pandemic years, we really focused on that virtual experience in viewing it with those gaming kind of gamification sort of elements. You know, one of the things we did for the students is just like you guys, we have a discord channel, so not only can the students get hands on, but they also have this built in community of other students now to help support them bounce ideas off of and, you know, improve their learning. >>Awesome. So what's next, take us through after this event and what's going on for you more competitions. >>Yeah. So we're gonna be at the remainder of the AWS summits around the world. So places like Mexico city, you know, uh, this week we were in Milan, um, you know, we've got some AWS public sector, um, activities that are happening. Some of those are focused on students. So we've had student events in, um, Ottawa in Canada. We've had a student event in Japan. We've had a student event in, um, Australia, New Zealand. And so we've got events, both for students as well as for the professionals who wanna compete in the league happening around the world. And again, culminating at reinvent. So we'll be back here in Vegas, um, at the beginning of December where our champions will, uh, compete to ho to come. >>So you guys are going to all the summits, absolutely. Most of the summits or >>All of them, anytime there's a physical summit, we'll be there with a track and cars and give developers the opportunity to >>The track is always open. >>Absolutely. (upbeat music) >> Welcome, everyone, to this CUBE Conversation here in Palo Alto, California. I'm John Furrier, host of the CUBE. We're here to talk about the state of MarTech and AI. We're here with the co-founder and head of AI for Blueshift, Manyam Mallela. Welcome to the CUBE, thanks for coming on. >> Thank you, John. Thank you for having me, excited to chat with you. >> Blueshift is a company you've co-founded with a couple other co-founders and you guys have a stellar pedigree going in data AI back before it was fashionable, in the old days, Web 1.0, if you want to call it that. So, you know, we know what you guys have been doing in your careers. Now you got a company on the cutting edge, solving problems for customers as they transition from this new, new way of doing things where users have data and power and control, customers are trying to be more authentic, got walled gardens emerging everywhere but that we're supposed to be away from walled gardens. So there's a whole set of new patterns, new expectations and new behaviors. So all this is challenging, but yet it's an opportunity. So I want to get into it. What is your vision? And what's your view on the MarTech today and AI, and how do you guys fit into that, that story? >> Yeah. Great question, John. We are still in the very early innings of where every digital experience is informed, both creatively from the marketing side of our organization, as well as the AI doing the heavy lifting under the herd to be able to create those experience at scale. And I think today every digital customer and every user out there are leaving a trail of very rich, very frequent interaction data with their brands and organizations that they interact with. You know, if you look at each of us, many, many moments and hours of our digital lives are with these interactions that we do on screens and devices, and that leaves a rich trail of data. And brands that are winning, brands that we want to interact with more, have user privacy and user safety at the center of it. And then they build that authentic connection from there on. And, you know, just like when we log into our favorite streaming shows or streaming applications, we want to see things that are relevant to us. They, in some sense, knowing kind of intimately our preferences or changing taste. And how does a brand or organization react to that but still make room for that authentic connection? >> It's an awesome opportunity. And it's a lot of challenges, and it's just starting, I totally agree. Let me ask you a question, Manyam, if you don't mind. How did you guys come up with Blueshift? I know you guys have been in this game before it was fashionable, so to speak, but you know, solving Web 1.0, 2.0 problems. And then, you know, Walmart Labs, everyone knows the history of Walmart and how fast they were with inventory and how they used data. You have that kind of trajectory. When you saw this opportunity, was it like the team was saying, wow, look at this, it's right in our wheelhouse, or, how did you guys get here, and then how did it all come together? >> Yeah, thanks for offering me an opportunity to share our personal journey. You know, I think prior to starting Blueshift with my co-founders, who I worked with for almost the past 20 years of my life, we were at a company called Kosmix, which was a Silicon Valley, early AI pioneer. We were doing semantics search, and in 2011, Walmart started their Silicon Valley innovation hub, Walmart Labs, with the acquisition of Kosmix. And, you know, we went into Walmart Labs, and until then they were already an e-commerce leader. They had been practicing e-commerce for better part of 12 years prior to that, but they're certainly you know, behind, compared to their peers, right? And the peers to be named! (laughs) But, they saw this lack of what it is that they were doing so well in brick and mortar that they're not able to fully get there on the digital side. And, you know, this was almost a decade ago. And when they brought in our team with a lot of AI and data systems at scale, building things at the cutting edge, you know, we went into it a little bit naively, thinking, you know, hey, we are going to solve this problem for Walmart scale in three months. (laughs) But it took us three years to build those systems of engagement. Despite Walmart having an enormous amount of resources being the number one retailer in the world and the data and the resource at their disposal, we had to rethink a lot of assumptions and the trends that were converging were, you know, uses for interacting with them across multiple formats and channels. And both offline and online, the velocity and complexity of the data was increasing. All the marketing and merchandising teams said even a millisecond delay for me is unconscionable. And how do you get fresh data and activated at the moment of experience, without delay, this significant challenge at scale? And that's what we solve for our organizations. >> It really is the data problem. It's a scale problem. It's all that. And then having the software to have that AI predictive and, you know, it's omnichannel when you think about it, in that retail and that brick and mortar term used for physical space and digital converging. And we saw the pandemic pull forward this same dynamic where events and group behaviors and just interactions were all converging. So this line between physical and digital is now blurred, completely blended, the line between customer experience and marketing has been erased, and you guys are the center of this. What does it mean for the customer? Because the customers out there, your customers, or potential customers. They got problems to solved. They're going all digital cloud-native applications, the digital transformation. This is the new normal, and some are on it, are starting it, some are way behind. What are they- What's the situation with the customers? >> Yeah, that's certainly the maturity of, you know, the, each brand and organization along that, you know, both transformation and from transformation to actually thriving in that ecosystem. And how do we actually win, you know, share of mind and then share of, like, that market that they're looking to does take a while. And, and many are, you know, kind of midway through their journey. I think, there was, initially there is a lot of, you know, push towards let's collect all the data that we can but then, you know, how does the actually data becomes something useful that changes experience for Manyam versus John is really that critical moment. And that moment is when, you know, a lot of things come into place. And if I look at, like, the broader landscape, there are certainly lines of powers like Discovery, like Udacity and LendingTree, and Zumper car pods across all these industries. Who would've thought like, you know, all these industries who you would not think of actually as solving a digital engagement problem are now saying that's the key to our success and our growth. >> Yeah. It's absolutely the number one problem. This is the number one opportunity for all businesses, not just verticals here and there, all verticals. So walk me through your typical customer scenario. You know, what are the challenges that they face? You're in the middle of it, you're solving these problems, what are their challenges that they face and how do you guys solve them? >> Absolutely. So I'll talk through two examples, one from a finance industry, one from online learning, you know, o One of our great customers that we partner with is LendingTree. They offer tens of millions of customers' finance products that span from home loans, students loans, auto loans, credits, all of that. And, and let these people come into their website and collect information that is relevant to the loan that they're considering, but engage them in a way for the next period of time. So if you typically think about engagement, it's not just a one interaction, usually that follows a series of steps an organization has to take to be able to explain all their offerings in a way that is digestible and relevant and personalized to each of those millions of customers and actually have them through the funnel and measure it and report on it and make sure that that is the most relevant to them. So in a finance setting that is about consuming credit products, consuming loan products, consuming reporting products in an online context. I'll give you an example of one of our customers, Udacity. Imagine you are a marketing team of two people, and you are in challenged with, how do you engage 20 million students. You're not going to write 20 million communications that are different for each of those students, certainly. I think you need a system to say what did actually all these students come for? How do I learn what they want at this moment in time? What do they want next? If they actually finished something that they started two months ago, would they be eligible for the right course? Maybe today we are talking about self-driving cars. That's the course that I should bring in front of them. And that's only a small segment of the students but someone else maybe on the media and the production side. How do I personalize the experience so that every single step of the way for that student is, you know, created and delivered at scale? And that's kind of the problem that we solve for our brands, which is they have these millions of touchpoint that are, that they have, how do they bring all their data, very fresh and activated at the moment of action? >> So you guys are creating the 10x marketer. I mean, kind of- >> That's right. That's a very (indistinct)- >> 10X engineer, the famous, you're 10X engineer. >> Right. >> You guys are bringing a lot of heavy lifting to short staffs or folks that don't have a data science team or data engineering team. You're kind of bringing that 10x marketing capability. >> Absolutely. I think that's a great way to put it. I call it the mission impossible, which is, you know, you're signing up for the mission impossible, for every marketing team, it's like, now they're like, they are the product managers they're the data scientists, they're the analysts. They are the creator, you know, author, all of that combined into a role. And now you're entrusted with this really massive challenge. And how do you actually get there? And it's that 10x marketer who are embracing these technologies to get there. >> Well, I'm looking forward to challenging though because I can imagine you get a lot of skeptics out there. I don't believe you. It sounds too good to be true. And I want to get to that in the next segment, but I want to ask you about the state of MarTech and AI specifically. MarTech traditionally has been on Web 2.0 standards, DNS, URLs. It's the naming system of the internet. It's the internet infrastructure. So- >> Right. what needs to change to make that scale higher? Does, is there any new abstraction or any kind of opportunities for doing things in just managing you know, tokens that need to be translated? It's hard to do cross to- I mean, there's a lot of problems with Web 2.0 legacy that kind of holds back the promise of high availability of data, privacy, AI, more machine learning, more exposure of data. Can you share your vision on this next layer? >> Absolutely. Yeah, I think, you know, there's a lot of excitement about what Web3 would bring us there in the very early innings of that possibility. But the challenge of, you know, data that leads to authentic experience still remains the same whichever metaverse we might actually interact with a brand name, like, you know, even if I go to a Nike store in the Metaverse, I still need to understand what that customer really prefers and keep up with that customer as they change their preferences. And AI is the key to be able to help a marketer. I call it the, you know, our own group call it like IPA you know, which is ingest all possible data, even from Metaverse, you know, the protocols might change, the formats might change, but then you have to not only have a sense of what happened in the past. I think there are more than enough tools to know what happened. There are only emerging tools to tell you what might happen. How do I predict? So ingest, predict, and then next step is activate. Actually you had to do something with it. How do I activate it, that the experience for you, whether it's Web3 or Web2 changes, and that IPA is kind of our own brew of, you know, AI marketing that we are taking to market. >> And that's the enablement piece, so how does this relate to the customer's data? You guys are storing all the data? Are they coming in? Is there a huge data lake involved? Can I bring in third party data? Does it have to be all be first party? How is that platform-level enabling this new form of customer engagement? >> Absolutely. There's a lot of heavy lifting that the data systems that one has to you know, bring to bear upon the problem, data systems ranging from, you know, distributed search, distributed indexing, low latency systems, data lakes that are built for high velocity, AI machine learning, training model inference, that validation pipeline. And, you know, we certainly leverage a lot of of data lake systems out there, including many of the components that are, you know, provided by our preferred partner, AWS and open source tools. And these data systems are certainly very complex to manage. And for an organization that, with a, you know, 5 to 10 people team of marketers, they're usually short staffed on the, the amount of attention that they get from rest of the organization. And what we have made is that you can ingest a lot more raw data. We do the heavy lifting, but both data management, identity resolution, segmentation, audience building, predictions, recommendations, and then give you also the delivery piece, which is, can I actually send you something? Can I put something in front of the user and measure it and report on it and tell you that, this is the ROI? How do, if all this would be for nothing, if actually you go through all this and there's no real ROI. And we have kind of, you know, our own forester did a total economic impact study with us. And they have found, they have found 781% ROI for implementing Blueshift. And it's a tremendous amount of ROI you get once you are able to reorient your organizations towards that. >> You know, Manyam, one of the problems of being a visionary and a pioneer like you guys are, you're early a lot. And so you must be scratching your head going, oh, the hot buzzword these days is the semantic layer, in Khan, you see snowflake and a bunch of other people kind of pushing this semantic layer. It's basically a data plane essentially for data, right? >> Right. >> And you guys have done that. Been there, done that, but now that's in play, you guys have this. >> That's right. >> You've got all this semantic search built in into the system, all this in data ingestion, it's a full platform. And so I need to ask you how you see this vectoring into the future state of customer engagement. Where, where do you see this intersecting with the organizations you're trying to bring this to? Are they putting more investment in, are they pulling back? Are they, where are, where are they and where are you guys relative to this, this technology? And, and, and, and first of all let's get your reaction to this semantic layer first. >> Right, right. It's a fantastic, you know, as a technologist, I love, you know, kind of the ontology and semantic differences, you know, how, how, you know, data planes, data meshes, data fabrics are put together. And, you know, I saw this, you know, kind of a dichotomy between CIO org and CMO org, right? The CO says like, you know, I have the best data plane, the data mesh, the data fabric. And the CMO says like, but I'm actually trying to accomplish something for this campaign. And they're like, oh, that, does it actually connect the both of pieces? >> So I think, the- >> Yeah? >> The CMO org certainly will need purpose-built applications, on top of the data fabric, on top of the data lakes, on top of the data measures, to be able to help marketing teams both technical and semi-technical to be able to accomplish that. >> Yeah. And then, and the new personas they want turnkey, they want to have it self-service. Again, the 10x marketer is someone with a small staff that can do the staff of hundred people, right? >> That's absolutely- >> So that's where it's going. And this is, this i6s the new normal. >> So, we call them AI marketers. And I think it's a, it's like you're calling a 10x marketer. I think, you know, over time we didn't have, you know this word, business intelligence analyst, but then once the tool are there, then they become business intelligence analysts. I think likewise, once these tools are available then we'll have AI marketers out in the market. >> Well, Manyam, I'd love to do a full, like, one-hour podcast with you. You can go for a long time with these topics given what you guys are working on, how relevant it is, how cool it is right now, and with what you guys have as a team and solution. I really appreciate you coming on the CUBE to chat. For the last minute we have here, give a quick plug for the company, what you guys are up to, size, funding, revenues, what you're looking for. What should people pay attention to? Give the plug. >> Yeah. Yeah, we are a global team, spanning, you know, multiple time zones. You know, we have raised $65 million to date to build out our vision and, you know, over the last eight years of our funding, we have served hundreds of customers and continuing to, you know, take on more. I think, you know, our hope is that over time, the next 10,000 organizations see this as a very much an approachable, you know, problem to solve for themselves, which I think is where we are. AI marketing is real doable, proven ROI. Can we get the next 10,000 customers to embrace that? >> You know, as we always used to say in the kind of web business and search, it's the contextual and the behavioral, you got to bring 'em together here. You got all that technology for the, for the sites and applications for the behavior and converting that contextually into value. Really compelling solution. Thanks for sharing your insight. >> Yeah. (upbeat music) >> Okay, welcome back everyone, Cube coverage live on the floor in the Moscone center in San Francisco, California. I'm John Furrier host of the Cube. AWS summit 2022 is here in San Francisco, we're back in live events. Of course, Amazon summit in New York city is coming, Amazon summit this summer we'll be there as well. We've got a great guest Mike Miller, GN of AI devices at AWS always one of my favorite interviews. We've got a little prop here, we got the car, DeepRacer, very popular at the events. Mike, welcome to the Cube. Good to see you. >> Hey John, thank you for having me. It's really exciting to be back and chat with you a little bit about DeepRacer. >> Well I want to get into the prop in a second, not the prop, the product. >> Yeah. >> So DeepRacer program, you got the race track here. Just explain what it is real quick, we'll get that out of the way. >> Absolutely so, well, you know that AI, AWS is passionate about making AI and ML more accessible to developers of all skill levels. So DeepRacer is one of our tools to do that. So DeepRacer is a 3D cloud-based racing simulator, a 1/18th scale autonomously driven car and a league to add a little spicy competition into it. So developers can start with the cloud-based simulator where they're introduced to reinforcement learning which basically teaches the, our car to drive around a track through trial and error and of course you're in a virtual simulator so it's easy for it to make mistakes and restart. Then once that model is trained, it's downloaded to the car which then can drive around a track autonomously, kind of making its own way and of course we track lap time and your successful lap completions and all of that data feeds into our league to try to top the leaderboard and win prizes. >> This is the ultimate gamification tool. (chuckles) >> Absolutely >> Making it fun to learn about machine learning. All right, let's get into the car, let's get into the showcase of the car. show everyone what's going on. >> Absolutely. So this is our 1/18th scale autonomously driven car. It's built off of a monster truck chassis so you can see it's got four wheel drive, it's got steering in the front, we've got a camera on the front. So the camera is the, does the sensing to the compute board that's driven by an Intel atom a processor on the, on the vehicle, that allows it to make sense of the in front of it and then decide where it wants to drive. So you take the car, you download your trained model to it and then it races around the track. >> So the front is the camera. >> The front is the camera, that's correct. >> Okay, So... >> So it's a little bit awkward but we needed to give it plenty of room here so that I can actually see the track in front of it. >> John: It needs eyes. >> Yep. That's exactly right. >> Awesome. >> Yes. >> And so I got to buy that if I'm a developer. >> So, developers can start in two ways, they can use our virtual racing experience and so there's no hardware cost for that, but once you want the experience, the hands on racing, then the car is needed but if you come to one of our AWS summits, like here in San Francisco or anywhere else around the world we have one or more tracks set up and you can get hands on, you can bring the model that you trained at home download it to a car and see it race around the track. >> So use a car here. You guys are not renting cars, but you're letting people use the cars. >> Absolutely. >> Can I build my own car or does it have to be assembled by AWS? >> Yeah, we, we sell it as a, as a kit that's already assembled because we've got the specific compute board in there, that Intel processor and all of the software that's already built on there that knows how to drive around the track. >> That's awesome, so talk about the results. What's going on? What's the feedback from developers? Obviously it's a nerd dream, people like race cars, people love formula one now, all the racing there. IOT is always an IOT opportunity as well. >> Absolutely, and as you said, gamification, right? And so what we found and what we thought we would find was that adding in those sort of ease of learning so we make it the on-ramp to machine learning very easy. So developers of all skill levels can take advantage of this, but we also make it fun by kind of gamifying it. We have different challenges every month, we have a leader board so you can see how you rank against your peers and actually we have split our league into two, there's an open division which is more designed for novices so you'll get rewarded for just participating and then we have a pro league. So if you're one of the top performers in the open league each month, you graduate and you get to race against the big boys in the pro leagues. >> What's the purse? >> Oh, the, (John laughing) we definitely have cash and prizes that happen, both every month. We have prizes cause we do races every month and those winners of those races all get qualified to race at the championship, which of course happens in Las Vegas at re:Invent. So we bring all the winners to re:Invent and they all race against each other for the grand prize the big trophy and the, and the, and the cash prize. >> Well, you know, I'm a big fan of what you guys are doing so I'm kind of obviously biased on this whole program but you got to look at trend of what's going on in eSports and the online engagement is off the charts, are there plans to kind of make this more official and bigger? Is there traction there or is this just all part of the Amazon goodness, love that you guys give back? I mean, obviously it's got traction. >> Yeah. I mean, the thing that's interesting about eSports is the number of young people who are getting into it and what we saw over the last couple years is that, there were a lot of students who were adopting DeepRacer but there were some hurdles, you know, it wasn't really designed for them. So what we did was we made some changes and at the beginning of this year we launched a student focused DeepRacer program. So they get both free training every month, they get free educational materials and their own private league so they know students can race against other students, as part of that league. >> John: Yeah. >> So that was really our first step in kind of thinking about those users and what do we need to do to cater to their kind of unique needs? >> Tell about some of the power dynamics or the, or not power dynamics, the group dynamics around teams and individuals, can I play as an individual? Do I, do I have to be on a team? Can I do teams? How does that look? How do you think about those things? >> Yeah, absolutely. Great, great question. The primary way to compete is individually. Now we do have an offering that allows companies to use DeepRacer to excite and engage their own employees and this is where operating as a team and collaborating with your coworkers comes into play so, if, if I may there's, you know, Accenture and JPMC are a couple big customers of ours, really strong partners. >> John: Yeah. >> Who've been able to take advantage of DeepRacer to educate their workforce. So Accenture ran a 24 hour round the, round the globe race a couple years ago, encouraging their employees to collaborate and form teams to race and then this past year JPMC, had over 3000 of their builders participate over a three month period where they ran a private league and they went on to win the top two spots, first place and second place. >> John: Yeah. >> At reinvent last year. >> It reminds me the NASCAR and all these like competitions, the owners have multiple cars on the race. Do you guys at re:Invent have to start cutting people like, only two submissions or is it free for all? >> Well, you have to qualify to get to the races at re:invent so it's very, it's very cutthroat leading up to that point. We've got winners of our monthly virtual contests, the winners like of the summit races will also get invited. So it's interesting, this dynamic, you'll have some people who won virtual races, some people who won physical races, all competing together. >> And do you guys have a name for the final cup or is it like what's the, what's the final, how do you guys talk about the prizes and the... >> It's, it's the DeepRacer Championship Cup of course. >> John: Of course. (laughter) >> Big silver cup, you get to hoist it and... >> Are the names inscribed in it, is it like the Stanley cup or is it just one. >> It's a unique one, so you get to hold onto it each year. The champion gets their own version of the cup. >> It's a lot of fun. I think it's really kind of cool. What's the benefits for a student? Talk about the student ones. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> So I'm a student I'm learning machine learning, what's in it for me is a career path and the fund's obvious, I see that. >> Yeah absolutely. You know, the, for students, it's a hands on way that's a very easy on-ramp to machine learning and you know, one of the things, as I mentioned we're passionate about making it accessible to all. Well, when we mean all we were really do mean all. So, we've got a couple partners who are passionate about the same thing, right? Which is how do we, if, if AI and ML is going to transform our world and solve our most challenging problems, how can we get the right minds from all walks of life and all backgrounds to learn machine learning and get engaged? So with two of our partners, so with Udacity and with Intel we launched a $10 million AWS, AI and ML scholarship program and we built it around DeepRacer. So not only can students who are college and high school students, age 16 and over can use DeepRacer, can learn about machine learning and then get qualified to win one of several thousand scholarships. >> Any other promotions going on that people should know about? >> Yeah, one, one final one is, so we talked about enterprises like JPMC and Accenture, so we've got a promotion that we just started yesterday. So if you are an enterprise and you want to host a DeepRacer event at your company to excite your employees and get 'em collaborating more, if you have over 50 employees participating, we're going to give you up to a hundred thousand dollars in AWS credits, to offset the costs of running your DeepRacer event at your, at your company so >> That's real money. >> Yeah. Real, real, real exciting I think for companies now to pick up DeepRacer. >> So, I mean, honestly, I know Andy Jassy, I have many sports car conversations with him. He's a sports guy, he's now the CEO of Amazon, gets to go all the sporting events, NFL. I wish I could bring the Cube there but, we'll stick with with cloud for now. You got to look at the purse kind of thing. I'm interested in like the whole economic point of cause I mean, forget the learning for side for a second which is by the way awesome. This is great competition. You got leader boards, you got regional activities, you got a funneling system laddering up to the final output. >> And we've really done a decent job and, and of adding capabilities into that user experience to make it more engaging. You can see the countries that the different competitors are from, you can see how the lap times change over time, you know, we give awards as I mentioned, the two divisions now. So if you're not super competitive, we'll reward you for just participating in that open league but if you want to get competitive, we'll even better rewards monthly in the Pro League. >> Do you guys have any conversations internally like, this is getting too big, we might have to outsource it or you keep it in inside the fold? (laughter) >> We, we love DeepRacer and it's so much fun running this, >> You see where I'm going with this. You see where I'm going with this right? The Cube might want to take this over. >> Hey. >> And you know >> We're always looking for partners and sponsors who can help us make it bigger so, absolutely. >> It's a good business opportunity. I just love it. Congratulations, great stuff. What's the big learning in this, you know, as a as an executive, you look back you got GM, AI super important and, and I think it is great community, communal activity as well. What's the learning, what have you learned from this over the years besides that it's working but like what's the big takeaway? >> Yeah, I mean. We've got such a wide range of developers and builders who are customers that we need to provide a variety of opportunities for people to get hands on and there's no better way to learn a complex technology like AI and ML than getting hands on and seeing, you know, physically the result of the AI and I think that's been the biggest learning, is that just having the hands on and the sort of element of watching what it does, just light bulbs go off. When, when developers look at this and they start piecing the, the puzzle pieces together, how they can benefit. >> So I have to ask the question that might be on other peoples minds, maybe it's not, maybe I'm just thinking really dark here but gamers love to hack and they love cheat codes, they love to get, you know, get into the system, any attempts to do a little hacking to win the, the the game, have you guys, is there, you know? >> Well, well, you know, last year we, we we released an open source version of the vehicle so that people could start using it as a platform to explore and do that kind of hacking and give them an opportunity build on top of it. >> So using mods, mods modules, we can mod out on this thing. >> Yeah, absolutely. If you go to deepracer.com, we have sort of extensions page there, and you can see, somebody mounted a Nerf cannon onto the top of this, somebody built a computer vision model that could recognize you know, rodents and this thing would kind of drive to scare 'em, all kinds of fun topics. >> So it's a feature, not a bug. >> Absolutely. >> Open it up. >> Yeah. >> And also on transparency, if you have the source code out there you guys can have some review. >> Yeah. The whole idea is like, let's see what developers, >> It's really not hackable. It's not hackable. >> Yeah, I mean, for the, if you think about it when we do the races, we bring the cars ourselves, the only way a developer interacts is by giving us their trained models so... >> And you, do you guys review the models? Nothing to review, right? >> Yeah. There's nothing really to review. It's all about, you know, there, there was a model that we saw one time where the car went backwards and then went forwards across the finish line but we, we, we gently told them, well that's really not a valid way to race. >> That was kind of a hack, not really a hack. That was a hack hack. (laughter) That was just a growth hack. >> Exactly, but everybody just has a lot of fun with it across the board. >> Mike, great, thanks for coming on. Love the prop. Thanks for bringing the car on, looks great. Success every year. I want to see the purse, you know, big up to $1,000,000 you know, the masters, you know, tournament. >> Someday. Jeff Frick here with theCUBE we are in our Palo Alto studios today. We're still getting through COVID, thankfully media was a necessary industry, so we've been able to come in and keep a small COVID crew, but we can still reach out to the community and through the magic of the internet and camera's on laptops, we can reach out and touch base with our friends. So we're excited to have somebody who's talking about and working on kind of the next big edge, the next big cutting thing going on in technology. And that's the internet of things you've heard about it the industrial Internet of Things. There's a lot of different words for it. But the foundation of it is this company it's Intel. We're happy to have joined us Bill Pearson. He is the Vice President of Internet of Things often said IoT for Intel, Bill, great to see you. >> Same Jeff. Nice to be here. >> Yeah, absolutely. So I just was teasing getting ready for this interview, doing a little homework and I saw you talking about Internet of Things in a 2015 interview, actually referencing a 2014 interview. So you've been at this for a while. So before we jump into where we are today, I wonder if you can share, you know, kind of a little bit of a perspective of what's happened over the last five or six years. >> I mean, I think data has really grown at a tremendous pace, which has changed the perception of what IoT is going to do for us. And the other thing that's been really interesting is the rise of AI. And of course we need it to be able to make sense of all that data. So, you know, one thing that's different is today where we're really focused on how do we take that data that is being produced at this rapid rate and really make sense of it so that people can get better business outcomes from that. >> Right, right. But the thing that's so interesting on the things part of the Internet of Things and even though people are things too, is that the scale and the pace of data that's coming off, kind of machine generated activity versus people generated is orders of magnitude higher in terms of the frequency, the variety, and all kind of your classic big data meme. So that's a very different challenge then, you know, kind of the growth of data that we had before and the types of data, 'cause it's really gone kind of exponential across every single vector. >> Absolutely. It has, I mean, we've seen estimates that data is going to increase by about five times as much as it is today, over the next, just a couple years. So it's exponential as you said. >> Right. The other thing that's happened is Cloud. And so, you know, kind of breaking the mold of the old mold roar, all the compute was either in your mini computer or data center or mainframe or on your laptop. Now, you know, with Cloud and instant connectivity, you know, it opens up a lot of different opportunities. So now we're coming to the edge and Internet of Things. So when you look at kind of edge in Internet of Things, kind of now folding into this ecosystem, you know, what are some of the tremendous benefits that we can get by leveraging those things that we couldn't with kind of the old infrastructure and our old way kind of gathering and storing and acting on data? >> Yeah. So one of the things we're doing today with the edge is really bringing the compute much closer to where all the data is being generated. So these sensors and devices are generating tons and tons of data and for a variety of reasons, we can't send it somewhere else to get processed. You know, there may be latency requirements for that control loop that you're running in your factory or there's bandwidth constraints that you have, or there's just security or privacy reasons to keep it onsite. And so you've got to process a lot of this data onsite and maybe some estimates or maybe half of the data is going to remain onsite here. And when you look at that, you know, that's where you need compute. And so the edge is all about taking compute, bringing it to where the data is, and then being able to use the intelligence, the AI and analytics to make sense of that data and take actions in real time. >> Right, right. But it's a complicated situation, right? 'Cause depending on where that edge is, what the device is, does it have power? Does it not have power? Does it have good connectivity? Does it not have good connectivity? Does it have even the ability to run those types of algorithms or does it have to send it to some interim step, even if it doesn't have, you know, kind of the ability to send it all the way back to the Cloud or all the way back to the data center for latency. So as you kind of slice and dice all these pieces of the chain, where do you see the great opportunity for Intel, where's a good kind of sweet spot where you can start to bring in some compute horsepower and you can start to bring in some algorithmic processing and actually do things between just the itty-bitty sensor at the itty-bitty end of the chain versus the data center that's way, way upstream and far, far away. >> Yeah. Our business is really high performance compute and it's this idea of taking all of these workloads and bringing them in to this high performance compute to be able to run multiple software defined workloads on single boxes, to be able to then process and analyze and store all that data that's being created at the edge, do it in a high performance way. And whether that's a retail smart shelf, for example, that we can do realtime inventory on that shelf, as things are coming and going, or whether it's a factory and somebody's doing, you know,real time defect detection of something moving across their textile line. So all of that comes down to being able to have the compute horsepower, to make sense of the data and do something with it. >> Right, right. So you wouldn't necessarily like in your shelf example that the compute might be done there at the local store or some aggregation point beyond just that actual, you know, kind of sensor that's underneath that one box of tide, if you will. >> Absolutely. Yeah, you could have that on-prem, a big box that does multiple shelves, for example. >> Okay, great. So there's a great example and you guys have the software development kit, you have a lot of resources for developers and in one of the case studies that I just wanted to highlight before we jump into the dev side was I think Audi was the customer. And it really illustrates a point that we talked about a lot in kind of the big data meme, which is, you know, people used to take action on a sample of data after the fact. And I think this case here we're talking about running 1,000 cars a day through this factory, they're doing so many welds, 5 million welds a day, and they would pull one at the end of the day, sample a couple welds and did we have a good day or not? Versus what they're doing now with your technology is actually testing each and every weld as it's being welded, based on data that's coming off the welding machine and they're inspecting every single weld. So I just love you've been at this for a long time. When you talk to customers about what is possible from a business point of view, when you go from after the fact with a sample of data, to in real time with all the data, how that completely changes your view and ability to react to your business. >> Yeah. I mean, it makes people be able to make better decisions in real time. You know, as you've got cameras on things like textile manufacturers or footwear manufacturers, or even these realtime inventory examples you mentioned, people are going to be able to make and can make decisions in real time about how to stock that shelf, what to order about what to pull off the line, am I getting a good product or not? And this has really changed, as you said, we don't have to go back and sample anymore. You can tell right now as that part is passing through your manufacturing line, or as that item is sitting on your shelf, what's happening to it. It's really incredible. >> So let's talk about developers. So you've got a lot of resources available for developers and everyone knows Intel obviously historically in PCs and data centers. And you would do what they call design wins back when I was there, many moons ago, right? You try to get a design win and then, you know, they're going to put your microprocessors and a bunch of other components in a device. When you're trying to work with, kind of Cutting Edge Developers in kind of new fields and new areas, this feels like a much more direct touch to the actual people building the applications than the people that are really just designing the systems of which Intel becomes a core part of. I wonder if you could talk about, you know, the role developers and really Intel's outreach to developers and how you're trying to help them, you know, kind of move forward in this new crazy world. >> Yeah, developers are essential to our business. They're essential to IoT. Developers, as you said, create the applications that are going to really make the business possible. And so we know the value of developers and want to make sure that they have the tools and resources that they need to use our products most effectively. We've done some things around OpenVINO toolkit as an example, to really try and simplify, democratize AI application so that more developers can take advantage of this and, you know, take the ambitions that they have to do something really interesting for their business, and then go put it into action. And the whole, you know, our whole purpose is making sure we can actually accomplish that. >> Right. So let's talk about OPenVINO. It's an interesting topic. So I actually found out what OpeVINO means, Open Visual Inference and Neural Optimization toolkit,. So it's a lot about computer vision. So I will, you know, and computer vision is an interesting early AI application that I think a lot of people are familiar with through Google photos or other things where, you know, suddenly they're putting together little or a highlight movies for you, or they're pulling together all the photos of a particular person or a particular place. So the computer vision is pretty interesting. Inference is a special subset of AI. So I wonder, you know, you guys are way behind OpenVINO. Where do you see the opportunities in visualization? What are some of the instances that you're seeing with the developers out there doing innovative things around computer vision? >> Yeah, there's a whole variety of used cases with computer vision. You know, one that we talked about earlier here was looking at defect detection. There's a company that we work with that has a 360 degree view. They use cameras all around their manufacturing line. And from there, they didn't know what a good part looks like and using inference and OpenVINO, they can tell when a bad part goes through or there's a defect in their line and they can go and pull that and make corrections as needed. We've also seen, you know, use cases like smart shopping, where there's a point of sale fraud detection. We call it, you know, is the item being scanned the same as the item that is actually going through the line. And so we can be much smarter about understanding retail. One example that I saw was a customer who was trying to detect if it was a vodka or potatoes that was being scanned in an automated checkout system. And again, using cameras and OpenVINO, they can tell the difference. >> We haven't talked about a computer testing yet. We're still sticking with computer vision and the natural language processing. I know one of the areas you're interested in and it's going to only increase in importance is education. Especially with what's going on, I keep waiting for someone to start rolling out some national, you know, best practice education courses for kindergartens and third graders and sixth graders. And you know, all these poor teachers that are learning to teach on the fly from home, you guys are doing a lot of work in education. I wonder if you can share, I think your work doing some work with Udacity. What are you doing? Where do you see the opportunity to apply some of this AI and IoT in education? >> Yeah, we launched the Nanodegree with Udacity, and it's all about OpenVINO and Edge AI and the idea is, again, get more developers educated on this technology, take a leader like your Udacity, partner with them to make the coursework available and get more developers understanding using and building things using Edge AI. And so we partnered with them as part of their million developer goal. We're trying to get as many developers as possible through that. >> Okay. And I would be remiss if we talked about IoT and I didn't throw 5G into the conversation. So 5G is a really big deal. I know Intel has put a ton of resources behind it and have been talking about it for a long, long time. You know, I think the huge value in 5G is a lot around IoT as opposed to my handset going faster, which is funny that they're actually releasing 5G handsets out there. But when you look at 5G combined with the other capabilities in IoT, again, how do you see 5G being this kind of step function in ability to do real time analysis and make real time business decisions? >> Well, I think it brings more connectivity certainly and bandwidth and reduces latency. But the cool thing about it is when you look at the applications of it, you know, we talked about factories. A lot of those factors may want to have a private 5G networks that are running inside that factory, running all the machines or robots or things in there. And so, you know, it brings capabilities that actually make a difference in the world of IoT and the things that developers are trying to build. >> That's great. So before I let you go, you've been at this for a while. You've been at Intel for a while. You've seen a lot of big sweeping changes, kind of come through the industry, you know, as you sit back with a little bit of perspective, and it's funny, even IoT, like you said, you've been talking about it for five years and 5G we've been been waiting for it, but the waves keep coming, right? That's kind of the fun of being in this business. As you sit there where you are today, you know, kind of looking forward the next couple of years, couple of four or five years, you know, what has just surprised you beyond compare and what are you still kind of surprised that's it's still a little bit lagging that you would have expected to see a little bit more progress at this point. >> You know, to me the incredible thing about the computing industry is just the insatiable demand that the world has for compute. It seems like we always come up with, our customers always come up with more and more uses for this compute power. You know, as we've talked about data and the exponential growth of data and now we need to process and analyze and store that data. It's impressive to see developers just constantly thinking about new ways to apply their craft and, you know, new ways to use all that available computing power. And, you know, I'm delighted 'cause I've been at this for a while, as you said, and I just see this continuing to go far as far as the eye can see. >> Yeah, yeah. I think you're right. There's no shortage of opportunity. I mean, the data explosion is kind of funny. The data has always been there, we just weren't keeping track of it before. And the other thing that as I look at Jira, Internet of Things, kind of toolkit, you guys have such a broad portfolio now where a lot of times people think of Intel pretty much as a CPU company, but as you mentioned, you got to FPGAs and VPUs and Vision Solutions, stretch applications Intel has really done a good job in terms of broadening the portfolio to go after, you know, kind of this disparate or kind of sharding, if you will, of all these different types of computer applications have very different demands in terms of power and bandwidth and crunching utilization to technical (indistinct). >> Yeah. Absolutely the various computer architectures really just to help our customers with the needs, whether it's high power or low performance, a mixture of both, being able to use all of those heterogeneous architectures with a tool like OpenVINO, so you can program once, right once and then run your application across any of those architectures, help simplify the life of our developers, but also gives them the compute performance, the way that they need it. >> Alright Bill, well keep at it. I'm your host, Rebecca Knight, along with my co-host, John Furrier. We are joined by Ariel Kelman. He is the VP, Worldwide Marketing at AWS. Thank you so much for coming on theCUBE. >> Thanks so much for having me on today. >> So let's start out just at ten thousand feet and talk a little bit about what you're seeing as the major cloud and AI trends and what your customers are telling you. >> Yeah, so I mean, clearly, machine learning and AI is really the forefront of a lot of discussions in enterprise IT and there's massive interest but it's still really early. And one of the things that we're seeing companies really focused on now is just getting all their data ready to do the machine learning training. And as opposed to also, in addition I mean, training up all their people to be able to use these new skills. But we're seeing tons of interest, it's still very early, but you know one of the reasons here at Informatica World is that getting all the data imported and ready is, you know, it's almost doubled or tripled in importance as it was when people were just trying to do analytics. Now they're doing machine learning as well. You know, we're seeing huge interest in that. >> I want to get into some of the cloud trends with your business, but first, what's the relationship with Informatica, and you know we see them certainly at re:Invent. Why are you here? Was there an announcement? What's the big story? >> I mean, we've been working together for a long time and it's very complementary products and number varies. I think the relationship really started deepening when we released Redshift in 2013, and having so many customers that wanted to get data into the cloud to do data we're housing, we're already using Informatica in, to help get the data loaded and cleansed and so really they're one of the great partners that's fueling moving data into the cloud and helping our customers be more successful with Redshift. >> Yeah, one of the things I really admire about you guys is that you're very customer centric. We've been following Amazon as you know since their, actually second reinvent, Cube's been there every time, and just watching the growth, you know, Cloud certainly has been a power source for innovation, SAS companies that are born in the cloud have exponentially scaled faster than most enterprises because they use data. And so data's been a heart of all the successful SAS businesses, that's why start ups gravitated to the Cloud right away. But now that you guys got enterprise adoption, you guys have been customer centric and as you listen to customers, what are you guys hearing from that? Because the data on premises, you've got more compliance, you've got more regulation, you've got-- news today-- more privacy and now you've got regions, countries with different laws. So the complexity around even just regulatory, nevermind tech complexity, how are you guys helping customers when they say, you know what, I want to get to the cloud, love Amazon, love the cloud, but I've got my, I've got to clean up my on param house. >> Yeah, I would say like a lot, if you look at a lot of the professional services work that we do, a lot of it is around getting the company prepared and organized with all their data before they move to the cloud: segmenting it, understanding the different security regulatory requirements, coming up with a plan of what they need, what data they're going to maybe abstract up, before they load it, and there's a lot of work there. And, you know, we've been focused on trying to help customers.. >> And is there a part in you're helping migrate to the cloud, is that.. >> Yeah, there's technology pieces, companies like Informatica helping to extract and transform and load the data and on data governance policies. But then also, for a lot of our systems integrator partners, Cognizant, Accenture, Deloitte-- they're very involved in these projects. There's a lot of work that goes on; a lot of people don't talk about just before you can even start doing the machine learning, and a lot of that's getting your data ready. >> So how, what are some of the best practices that have emerged in working with companies that, as you said, there's a lot of pre-work that needs to be done and they need to be very thoughtful about about sort of getting their data sorted. >> Well I think the number one thing that I see and I recommend is to actually first take a step back from the data and to focus on what are the business requirements of, what questions are you trying to answer, let's say with machine learning, or with data science advanced analytics, and then back out the data from that. What we see a lot of, you know companies sometimes will have it be a data science driven project. Okay, here's all the data that we have, let's put it in one place, when you may not be spending time proportionate to the value of the data. And so that's one of the key things that we see, and to come up-- just come up with a strong plan around what answers you're, what business questions you're trying to answer. >> On the growth of Amazon, you guys certainly have had great record numbers, growth, even in the double digit kind of growth you're seeing on top of your baseline has been phenomenal. Clearly number one on the cloud. Enterprise has been a big focus. I noticed that on the NHL, your logo's on the ice during the playoffs; you've got the Statcast. You guys are creating a lot of aware-- I see a lot of billboards everywhere, a lot of TV ads. Is that part of the strategy is to get you guys more brand awareness? What's the.. >> We're trying, you know, it's part of our overall brand awareness strategy. What we're trying to do is to help, we're trying to communicate to the world how our customers are being successful using our technology, specifically machine learning and AI. It's one of these things where so many companies want to do it but they say, well, what am I supposed to use it for? And so, you know, one of, if you dumb down what marketing is at AWS, it's inspiring people about what they can run in the cloud with AWS, what use cases they should consider us for, and then we spend a lot of energy giving them the technical education and enablement so they can be successful using our products. At the end of the day, we make money when our customers are successful using our products. >> One of the hot products was SageMaker, we see in that group, AI's gone mainstream. That's a great tail wind for you guys because it kind of encapsulates or kind of doesn't have to get all nerdy about cloud, you know, infrastructure and SAS. AI kind of speaks to many people. It's one of the hottest curriculums and topics in the world. >> Yeah, and with SageMaker, we're trying to address a problem that we see in most of our customers where the everyday developer is not, does not have expertise in machine learning. They want to learn it, so we think that anything we can do to make it easier for every developer to ramp up on machine learning the better. So that's why we came up with SageMaker as a platform to really make all three stages of machine learning easier: getting your data prepared for training, training in optimized models, and then running inference to make the predictions and incorporate that into people's applications. >> One of the themes that's really emerging in this conversation is the need to make sure developers are ready and that your people are skilled up and know what they need to know. How are, how is AWS thinking about the skills gap, and what are you doing to remedy it? >> Yeah, a couple things. I mean, we're really, like a lot of things we do, we'll say what are all the ways we can attack the problem and let's try and help. So, we have free training that we've been creating online. We've been partnering with large online training firms like Udacity and Coursera. We have an ML solutions lab that help companies prototype, we have a pretty significant professional services team, and then we're working with all of out systems integrators partners to build up their machine learning practices. It's a new area for a lot of them and we've been pushing them to add more people so they can help their customers. >> Talk about the conferences, you have re:Invent, the CORE conference, we've been theCUBE there. We've just also covered London, Amazon's Web Services summit, and 22,000 registered, 14,000 showed up. Got huge global reach now. How do you keep up with this? I mean it's a... >> Well we're trying to help our customers keep up with all the technology. I mean, really, we have about, maybe 25 or so of these summits around the world-- usually around two days, several thousand people, free conferences. And what we're trying to do is >> They're free? >> The summits are free and it's like, we introduce so much new technology, new services, deeper functionality within our exiting services, and our customers are very hungry to learn the latest best practices and how they can use these, and so we're trying to be in all the major areas to come in and provide deep educational content to help our customers be more successful. >> And re:Invent's coming around the corner. Any themes there early on, numbers wise? Last year you had, again, record numbers. I mean at some point, is Vegas too small >> Yeah, we had over 50,000 people. We're going to have even more, and we've been expanding to more and more locations around Las Vegas and you know we're going to keep growing. There's a lot of demand. I mean, we want to be able to provide the re:Invent experience for as many people as want to attend. >> What's the biggest skill set, you know the folks graduating this month, my daughter's graduating from Cal Berkeley, and a lot of others are graduating >> Congratulations >> high school. Everyone wants to either jump into some sort of data related field, doesn't have to be computer science, those numbers are up. What's your view of skill sets that are needed right now that weren't in curriculum, or what pieces of curriculum should people be learning to be successful if machine learning continues to grow from helping videos surface to collecting customer data. Machine learning's going to be feeding the AI applications and SAS businesses. >> Yeah, I mean look, you just forget about machine learning, you go to a higher level. There's not enough good developers. I mean, we're in a world now where any enterprise that is going to be successful is going to have their own software developers. They're going to be writing their own software. That's not how the world was 15 years ago. But if you're a large corporation and you're outsourcing your technology, you're going to get disrupted by someone else who does believe in custom software and developers. So the demand for really good software engineers, I mean we deal with all the time, we're hiring. It is always going to outstrip supply. And so, for young people, I would encourage them to start coding and to not be over reliant on the university curriculums, which don't always keep pace with, you know, with the latest trends. >> And you guys got a ton of material online too, you can always go to your site. Okay, on the next question around, as someone figures out, okay, enterprise versus pure SAS, you guys have proven with the Cloud that start ups can grow very fast and then the list goes on: AirBnB, Pinterest, Zoom Communications, disrupting existing big, mature markets by having access to the data. So how do you talk about customers when you say, hey, you know, I want to be like a SAS company, like a consumer company, leverage data, but I've got a lot of stuff on premise. So how do I not make that data constrained? How do you guys feel about that conversation because that seems to be the top conversation here, is you know, it's not to say be consumer, it's consumer-like. Leveraging data, cause if data's not into AI, there's no, AI doesn't work, right? So >> Right >> It can't be constrained by anything. >> Well, you know, you talk to all these companies and at first they don't even know what they don't know in terms of what is that data? And where is it? And what are the pieces that are important? And so, you know, we encourage people to do a good amount of strategy work before they even start to move bits up to the cloud. And of course, then we have a lot of ways we can help them, from our Snowball machines that they can plug in, all the way to our Snowmobile, which is the semi truck that you can drive up to your data center and offload very large amounts of data and drive it over to our data centers. >> One of the things that is trending-- we had Ali from Data Bricks talk about, he absolutely believes a lot of the same philosophies you guys do-- data in the cloud. And one of his arguments was is that there's a lot of data sets in these marketplaces now where you can really leverage other people's data, and we see that on cybersecurity where people are starting to share data, and Cloud is a better model for that than trying to ship drives around, and there's a time for Snowball, I get that, and Snowmobile, the big trucks for large ingestion into the cloud, but the enterprise, this is a new phenomenon. No one really shared a lot in the old days. This is a new dynamic. Talk about that, is it-- >> I mean, sharing, selling, monetizing data. If there's something that is important, there will be a market for it. And I think we're seeing that just the hunger, everything from enterprises to startups, that want more data, whether it's for machine learning to train their models, or it's just to run analytics and compare against their data sets. So I think the commercial opportunity is pretty large. >> I think you're right on that. I think that's a great insight. I mean, no one ever thought about data as a service from our data set standpoint, 'cause data sets feed machine learning. All right, so let's do, give the plug on what's going on with AWS. What's new, what's on your plate, what's notable. I mean I love the NHL, I couldn't resist that plug for you being a hockey fan. But what's new in your world? >> Um, you know, we're, we're in early planning stages on our re:Invent conference, our engineers are hard at work on a lot of new technology that we're going to have ready between now and our re:Invent show. You know, also we're, my team's been doing a lot of work with the sports organizations. We've had some interesting machine learning work with major league baseball. They rolled out this year a new machine learning model to do stolen base predictions. So, you can see on some of the broadcasts, as a runner goes past first base, we'll have a ticker that will show what the probability is that they'll be successful stealing second base if they choose to run. Trying to make a little more entertaining all those scenes we've seen in the past of the pitcher throwing the ball back to first, trying to use AI machine leaning to give a little bit more insight into what's going on. >> And that's the Statcast. Part of that's the Statcast >> That's Statcast, yeah >> And you got anything new coming around that besides that new.. >> Yeah, I think that yeah, major league baseball is hard at work on some new models that I think will be announced fairly soon. >> All right, to wrap up Informatica real quick, an announcement here, news coming I hear. How are you guys working with Informatica in the field? Is there any, can you share more about relationship >> Yeah I mean I think we're going to have an announcement a little bit later today, I mean it's around the subject we've been talking about: making it easier for customers to, you know, be successful moving their data to the Cloud so that they can start to benefit from the agility, the speed and the cost savings of data analytics and machine learning in the Cloud. >> And so when you're working with customers, I mean, because this is the thing about Amazon. It is a famously innovative, cutting edge company, and when you talk about the hunger that you describe, that these customers, isn't it just that they want to be around Amazon and kind of rub shoulders with this really creative, thinking four steps ahead kind of company. I mean how do you let your innovation rub off on these customers? >> I mean there's a couple ways We do, one of the things we've done recently is these innovation workshops. We have this thing we talk about a lot this working backwards process where we force the engineers to write a press release before we'll green light the product because we feel like if you can't clearly articulate the customer benefit, then we probably shouldn't start investing, right? And so we, that's one of the processes that we use to help us innovate better, more effectively and so we've been walk-- we walk customers through this. We have them come, you know there's an international company that I was, part of one of the efforts we did in Palo Alto last year where we had a bunch of their leadership team out for two days of workshops where we worked a bunch of ideas through, through our process. And so we do some of that but the other area is we try and capture area where we think that we've innovated in some interesting way into a service that then customers can use. Like Amazon Connect I think is a good example of it. This is our contact center call routing technology and you know, one of the things Amazon's consumer business is known for is having great customer support, customer service, and they spent a lot of time and energy making sure that calls get routed intelligently to the right people, that you don't sit on hold forever, and so we figure we're probably not the only company that could benefit from that. Kind of like with AWS, when we figure out how to run infrastructure securely and high performance and availability, and so we turn that into a service and it's become a very successful service for us. A lot of companies have similar contact center problems. >> As a customer, I can attest to being on hold a lot. Ariel, thank you so much for coming on theCUBE. This is our exclusive coverage of Amazon's new region we're covering. Part of AWS Summit, first time here in the Middle East for theCUBE. We're excited to be here. Next guest is Tala Fakhro, Executive Director of Market and Strategy Intelligence of Bahrain's Economic Development Board, also known as the EDB. >> That's right! >> Great to see you. Thanks for coming on. >> Thanks for having me. >> I've learned so much and it was great to meet you last night and have a conversation around some of the things you are working on. The Economic Development Board is a big part of this digital first, cloud first strategy. >> That's right. >> And Amazon's at the center of it. They're going to drop a region in here. This is really big news and it's certainly got our attention. And I've learned so much about what's happening in the startup community. >> Yes, we are very-- >> You've got a lot going on. What's the impact of the AWS region mean for Bahrain, the region, and the economic development opportunity? >> We took a look at Bahrain, and we decided we are going to have to transform this economy from an oil dependent one into a digital one. It just, it seemed like the right thing to do. And having Amazon here, attracting Amazon, allows us to plant that flag to say we are serious, we want to do this. And we will do what we need to do. We, we work together as a government. You know Bahrain is unique because we can do we can do things really fast when we want to. We built the Formula One Racetrack in 14 months, which is unheard of. And we did the same for Amazon. We engaged with them at every level. It wasn't just let's talk about this plot of land here, or this fiber optic cable there. We had the government engaged in legislation, and regulation and education. Every part of the government was actively pushing for this transaction. >> And I think that's an important point. I want to just amplify and double down on that and talk about it, because I think culturally, Bahrain, what I learned was this is a culture of fast moving, open, friendly but pragmatic people. >> Absolutely. >> And that's Amazon's ethos. >> Absolutely. >> Scale, move fast, and innovate. >> Absolutely. We, we've been a trading nation all our lives since time immemorial, you know. We're a tiny little country in the middle of the map. We were cross-border trading before we knew what that was called. So this is something not unique to us. It is part of our DNA, and we found a good match with Amazon. They wanted all the same things we wanted and they are genuinely interested in making the ecosystem of the countries in which they install their regions better. And we found that to be very attractive for us. >> So I've got to ask you, as Amazon comes in they're expected to have that, this region up and running in the beginning of 2019. >> That's right. >> Which is just right around the corner, so they're running fast, so congratulations. >> Thank you. >> It's the new Formula One Racetrack for cloud computing. What is driving the demand for cloud computing? Because obviously we've seen the history of what's happened in North America with startups. >> That's right. >> And as Amazon goes around the world, there's a growth engine underneath Amazon. What's driving the demand for cloud computing in the region? >> Well, 96% by some measures of our entire economy are startups or SMEs. So you could imagine that the cost savings that Amazon offers is extremely attractive. In addition, the volatility of oil prices has put a big crunch on the government budget and so they are also attracted to the idea of saving some money on the cloud. And the government is a big employer and a big consumer. So they really drive the economy. >> Yeah. >> So in both, it was a win-win for everybody. We are really interested in making sure that our Startup scene is vibrant and is scalable. And cloud is the way to do that. It allows you to use as much as you need and pay for only what you would consume, so it's great. >> And so, Khalid Al Rumaihi, the CEO of the EDB. >> Yes. >> Who's a very good visionary. He has private sector background, super smart. Really enjoyed that conversation. But one of the things that we talked about was we always say in theCUBE and sometimes debate this, but data is the new oil. >> Absolutely. >> Couldn't be more indicative of an oil region, and you mentioned that in moving off the dependence of oil, or getting into a new market like data, data needs refineries as an economic opportunity. So he mentions, Vintech as a big driver for what could be possible in Bahrain as a core competency. When you do your research and your insight and intelligent analysis of the data of what's going on the macro level, is that consistent of what you are seeing that there's a need for this digital refinery, being a center point of innovation? And if so, what does that mean? What is, how should people understand that Bahrain is a small country in a big region? >> It is a small-- >> How do you differentiate? How do you take a leadership opportunity? >> Well, Bahrain is a small country but it is a small country that's rich in one thing. If it's not rich in oil, it's rich in its people. We are bilingual. Many of us are trilingual. We've always been open and outgoing and we've been willing to make partnerships and friends with other nations and other places. So we think that our human capital is coming together with the hard infrastructure that a region will bring. It makes it a, you know, a real good proposition. And it allows for our students, who are, by the way, already starting to be cloud trained. Over 2500 Bahrainis have signed up for cloud training since the program started six months ago. >> Yeah. >> That's a huge proportion given our population. That's a much faster rate than India or China for example. >> Yeah. >> So this shows you how much, how willing we are. You know coding is the new English. We learned English in the 70's so that we could compete globally. Now we are learning coding to do the same thing. >> And that's super important. Let's talk about the human capital side of it, 'cause I think this is a good point that a lot of people overlook. Everyone's now connected with mobile devices, so connectedness is now common. So coding is the new language. Digital is the new culture. How are you guys looking at transforming some of the day-to-day citizen roles? Because now you have opportunities to serve citizens from a government standpoint and to get enable them to be successful. And one of the things that I noticed at the Startup Bahrain sessions I was attending yesterday was the vibrant entrepreneurs. They're opinionated, which I love. 'Cause that's what entrepreneurs are. They're like, come on, let's move faster. Where's the cash? Where's the capital? So the human capital seems to be a big equation here. What are you guys doing to facilitate that? Where are you guys on the progress bar in your mind? Are people coding at a young age? Has it started? Is it, what's, what's the progress? Can you take us through the plan? >> Well we, as I mentioned, for a cloud computing, specifically we already have programs in place. We also have many other initiatives coming up through Udacity, through Carcera, through others. We are bringing them to Bahrain to have the technical skills added to the human capital skill set that we already have. But I think most importantly, we are making it important. We are making it a forefront of the government agenda. You know, we are making it something that is a requirement. And I think that as we set our national economic strategy for the next four years, human capital is a crucial driver for that and it is going to have it's very own chapter with all the recommendations and all the initiatives that we think need to be done in order to increase, not just our stem cell but also our creativity, our entrepreneurship, >> Yeah. >> And all the things that had made us great in the past. >> You know as I was observing also, talking to your CEO about, I've seen people trying to replicate Silicon Valley trying to manufacture innovation in a way or trying to get a momentum. It's really hard. But what you guys I think have done or have here that's hard to do or hard to replicate or manufacture out of thin air is you guys have actually built a community of people. I see the entrepreneurs. I see the support around them through the EDB. You have money? >> We do. >> And you have growth coming. The other stuff's mechanics. How do you get funded? How to do this? How are you looking at that? When you look at the research and you dig into, and sometimes the best move is just let it develop. Get out of the way and let the entrepreneurs develop. How are you guys letting this develop because I won't say that Bahrain has an identity crisis. I think they have an opportunity to set a new identity. >> Absolutely. >> How do you look at that? And how do you guys see that opportunity? How do you talk about it? >> Well, you can't buy innovation. I think we've proven that enough times, that government is no good at making people innovate. But what we can do is make life easier for those who want to innovate. So what we want to do is pave the way. Allow for the opportunities to be there. And then, you know, then it's every man for himself and the free market will compete. We're a very free market oriented entity and government and so all we're going to do is we're going to get out of the way. But we're going to make sure that the path is as clear as we can make it. We are going to make sure that whatever we can do to help, we will. Whether that's bringing somebody like an Amazon here, to have the people here or the Al Waha Fund which is a venture capital fund to fund, which was just launched and which is already invested in. And three or four independently managed >> Yeah. >> Venture capital funds. We feel like these kinds of things, where we're not directly funding but we are encouraging, motivating, helping, that's the role of the government. >> And I also want to just to say to the folks watching, you guys and give you guys some props, you don't just talk it, you walk it. And I think what I noticed in the sessions yesterday and meeting some of the top policy makers and the entrepreneurs was you guys are actually doing the work. >> Oh, we're trying. >> And Teresa Carlson's success in Washington D.C. with Amazon web services really is a testament that if you do the work, the results will pay off. And when Teresa came to Washington DC, Amazon Cloud Computing was like, whoa it'll never work. It is not secure. You know, now they are winning. They are doing extremely well. I've seen the model. Everyone's emulating and moving towards. You guys are doing the work. I see the check boxes. But there's still some work to do. EKYC, other things. >> Yup. >> So congratulations. >> Thank you very much. >> So the question is, what do you got done and what is to do? And what does that mean for people who want to come either work here or collaborate with Bahrain? 'Cause if you check the boxes you're going to be set up. What's the status? >> Well, the first thing we wanted to do was to make sure that the soft infrastructure was there, so we, as a government passed what we call the digital ecosystem package. So that's data protection. That's electronic transactions laws. There's a new law that's in the process that will allow people who are storing data on Amazon's region in Bahrain to bring their own laws with them. So that there are no issues with conflict of laws. >> On the compliance side? >> Exactly. >> Yeah. >> So you know, it's as if they are storing in Saudi or Kuwait. >> Yeah. >> But they are storing here. So these kinds of things, this was the first step. And we've passed a bunch of those laws and we think that they are very important. In addition, as I mentioned, we have the funding situation. We begin to look at that. We hope that with this-- >> That's a hundred million fund of funds. >> That's a hundred million dollars fund to fund. >> Fund to fund, which means that you are going to enable private sector-- >> Correct. >> And professionals to come in. >> Absolutely. People who know what they're doing, who have done it before, in the region and outside of the region, whether it's Silicon Valley or Dubai. They're going to come here and they're going to look at the Bahraini startups, and that gives us the chance to compete on the world stage and shine. And it also gives us the chance to up our game. Once you see the competition, then you can >> Yeah. >> Fix and adjust and do what you need to do. And that's what we want. We want them. We're not going to help spoonfeed them. >> Yeah. >> We're not going to give them charity. This is, you are going to compete because what we dream is that Bahrain will eventually become a global player, and we think we can do that. That's our vision. That's what we want to do, and that's where we are headed. >> So you guys are competitive? >> We have to be. (John laughing) We're a tie, we are the underdog. >> Yeah. >> But sometimes underdogs win. >> You know as I was saying also observing that, we're our first time here with theCUBE in the region. So I was noticing that, you know, we see a lot of events in Dubai. And Dubai is very blown, built, blown up now and is developed. Bahrain feels like Silicon Valley because New York is different than say, the San Francisco Bay area, Silicon Valley. But they don't have to be each other. New York is New York. Hustle, bustle. Silicon Valley is where innovation is. It feels like you guys have that same kind of-- >> We do. >> Vibe here. >> We do, and a rising tide lifts all ships. Where there's good for the Emirates and Saudi, there's also good for Bahrain. It's a region at the end of the day. We're too small to be a player on our own. But one thing I wanted to touch on, you mentioned, that, you know, with the Silicon Valley. The difference between New York and Silicon Valley is everybody knows everybody in Silicon Valley. So if you are an entrepreneur and you have a good idea, you can easily access the people that you need to access. >> Yeah. >> We think Bahrain has that advantage too. And this is-- >> Yeah. >> Clearly demonstrated in the Amazon transaction because you know at the time when we could, we had everyone from His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince on down. If we needed them, they were a phone call away. >> And people are accessible here. They're open. >> They're open. >> They're very friendly. But it's kind of, I won't say no, it's kind of no nonsense in the sense of people just want, get to the point. Right? But it's not in your face like a East Coast New York kind of thing. >> Well, we're not there yet. (John laughing) Give us time. >> All right, so back to the access to capital concept because I think first of all, we're going to open up our doors >> Yes. >> With theCUBE in Silicon Valley for you guys. So very impressive. Consider that an open invitation. But now you're talking about networks. As you built community outside of Bahrain, what are some of the things that you guys are trying to do? What does the research say to do? Is it, is there regions that you see that you need to connect through? Obviously, you want to build some communications with other groups. What's the data show for you guys? What's the sequence of execution? >> So I think what we need to do is we really need to focus on the partners that we have and enhance that relationship. But also we need to look a little bit deeper. So I think India and China are areas of interest for us as well because they are interested in this part of the world, and we need to improve our relationship with Silicon Valley. Not just giving them money. >> Yeah. >> Because everyone wants to give Silicon valley money. But we want to really learn-- >> Yeah. >> And understand what they have done, why it's worked there, why it doesn't work elsewhere, and apply some of those lessons here. >> And bring some collaborations, certainly. >> Absolutely. >> Well, people are leaving Silicon Valley and I know that most startups and growing companies have engineering teams all over the world so it's a global economy. >> Absolutely. >> Final question for you as we wrap up. What is going to attract, folks you are, or, let me rephrase that. What should companies know about Bahrain if they want to engage with you guys here and work with you, or domicile here and create a group here? >> Well first of all, they should know that they don't need to involve anyone else because they can come in and set up on their own. 100% foreign ownership is something that we have here. Where it's a very liberal economy. It's a great place to live. and that sounds facetious but it's actually really important because talent is the crucial component of every success for these companies. And people like to live here. People enjoy it. I think you'll find a welcoming environment. You'll find an environment where if you have an issue, you can raise it to the highest level very easily. >> Got it. >> And EDB is here to help with that. >> Well Tala, thank you coming on. >> Thank you. >> Tala Fakhro, Executive Director of the Bahrain Economic Development Board, the EDB. I'm here with Joel Horwitz who's the Vice President of Digital Partnerships & Offerings at IBM. Good to see you again Joel. >> Thanks, great to be here, thanks for having me. >> So I was just, you're very welcome- It was just, let's see, was it last month, at Think? >> Yeah, it's hard to keep track, right. >> And we were talking about your new role- >> It's been a busy year. >> the importance of partnerships. One of the things I want to, well let's talk about your role, but I really want to get into, it's innovation. And we talked about this at Think, because it's so critical, in my opinion anyway, that you can attract partnerships, innovation partnerships, startups, established companies, et cetera. >> Joel: Yeah. >> To really help drive that innovation, it takes a team of people, IBM can't do it on its own. >> Yeah, I mean look, IBM is the leader in innovation, as we all know. We're the market leader for patents, that we put out each year, and how you get that technology in the hands of the real innovators, the developers, the longtail ISVs, our partners out there, that's the challenging part at times, and so what we've been up to is really looking at how we make it easier for partners to partner with IBM. How we make it easier for developers to work with IBM. So we have a number of areas that we've been adding, so for example, we've added a whole IBM Code portal, so if you go to developer.ibm.com/code you can actually see hundreds of code patterns that we've created to help really any client, any partner, get started using IBM's technology, and to innovate. >> Yeah, and that's critical, I mean you're right, because to me innovation is a combination of invention, which is what you guys do really, and then it's adoption, which is what your customers are all about. You come from the data science world. We're here at the Chief Data Officer Summit, what's the intersection between data science and CDOs? What are you seeing there? >> Yeah, so when I was here last, it was about two years ago in 2015, actually, maybe three years ago, man, time flies when you're having fun. >> Dave: Yeah, the Spark Summit- >> Yeah Spark Technology Center and the Spark Summit, and we were here, I was here at the Chief Data Officer Summit. And it was great, and at that time, I think a lot of the conversation was really not that different than what I'm seeing today. Which is, how do you manage all of your data assets? I think a big part of doing good data science, which is my kind of background, is really having a good understanding of what your data governance is, what your data catalog is, so, you know we introduced the Watson Studio at Think, and actually, what's nice about that, is it brings a lot of this together. So if you look in the market, in the data market, today, you know we used to segment it by a few things, like data gravity, data movement, data science, and data governance. And those are kind of the four themes that I continue to see. And so outside of IBM, I would contend that those are relatively separate kind of tools that are disconnected, in fact Dinesh Nirmal, who's our engineer on the analytic side, Head of Development there, he wrote a great blog just recently, about how you can have some great machine learning, you have some great data, but if you can't operationalize that, then really you can't put it to use. And so it's funny to me because we've been focused on this challenge, and IBM is making the right steps, in my, I'm obviously biased, but we're making some great strides toward unifying the, this tool chain. Which is data management, to data science, to operationalizing, you know, machine learning. So that's what we're starting to see with Watson Studio. >> Well, I always push Dinesh on this and like okay, you've got a collection of tools, but are you bringing those together? And he flat-out says no, we developed this, a lot of this from scratch. Yes, we bring in the best of the knowledge that we have there, but we're not trying to just cobble together a bunch of disparate tools with a UI layer. >> Right, right. >> It's really a fundamental foundation that you're trying to build. >> Well, what's really interesting about that, that piece, is that yeah, I think a lot of folks have cobbled together a UI layer, so we formed a partnership, coming back to the partnership view, with a company called Lightbend, who's based here in San Francisco, as well as in Europe, and the reason why we did that, wasn't just because of the fact that Reactive development, if you're not familiar with Reactive, it's essentially Scala, Akka, Play, this whole framework, that basically allows developers to write once, and it kind of scales up with demand. In fact, Verizon actually used our platform with Lightbend to launch the iPhone 10. And they show dramatic improvements. Now what's exciting about Lightbend, is the fact that application developers are developing with Reactive, but if you turn around, you'll also now be able to operationalize models with Reactive as well. Because it's basically a single platform to move between these two worlds. So what we've continued to see is data science kind of separate from the application world. Really kind of, AI and cloud as different universes. The reality is that for any enterprise, or any company, to really innovate, you have to find a way to bring those two worlds together, to get the most use out of it. >> Fourier always says "Data is the new development kit". He said this I think five or six years ago, and it's barely becoming true. You guys have tried to make an attempt, and have done a pretty good job, of trying to bring those worlds together in a single platform, what do you call it? The Watson Data Platform? >> Yeah, Watson Data Platform, now Watson Studio, and I think the other, so one side of it is, us trying to, not really trying, but us actually bringing together these disparate systems. I mean we are kind of a systems company, we're IT. But not only that, but bringing our trained algorithms, and our trained models to the developers. So for example, we also did a partnership with Unity, at the end of last year, that's now just reaching some pretty good growth, in terms of bringing the Watson SDK to game developers on the Unity platform. So again, it's this idea of bringing the game developer, the application developer, in closer contact with these trained models, and these trained algorithms. And that's where you're seeing incredible things happen. So for example, Star Trek Bridge Crew, which I don't know how many Trekkies we have here at the CDO Summit. >> A few over here probably. >> Yeah, a couple? They're using our SDK in Unity, to basically allow a gamer to use voice commands through the headset, through a VR headset, to talk to other players in the virtual game. So we're going to see more, I can't really disclose too much what we're doing there, but there's some cool stuff coming out of that partnership. >> Real immersive experience driving a lot of data. Now you're part of the Digital Business Group. I like the term digital business, because we talk about it all the time. Digital business, what's the difference between a digital business and a business? What's the, how they use data. >> Joel: Yeah. >> You're a data person, what does that mean? That you're part of the Digital Business Group? Is that an internal facing thing? An external facing thing? Both? >> It's really both. So our Chief Digital Officer, Bob Lord, he has a presentation that he'll give, where he starts out, and he goes, when I tell people I'm the Chief Digital Officer they usually think I just manage the website. You know, if I tell people I'm a Chief Data Officer, it means I manage our data, in governance over here. The reality is that I think these Chief Digital Officer, Chief Data Officer, they're really responsible for business transformation. And so, if you actually look at what we're doing, I think on both sides is we're using data, we're using marketing technology, martech, like Optimizely, like Segment, like some of these great partners of ours, to really look at how we can quickly A/B test, get user feedback, to look at how we actually test different offerings and market. And so really what we're doing is we're setting up a testing platform, to bring not only our traditional offers to market, like DB2, Mainframe, et cetera, but also bring new offers to market, like blockchain, and quantum, and others, and actually figure out how we get better product-market fit. What actually, one thing, one story that comes to mind, is if you've seen the movie Hidden Figures- >> Oh yeah. >> There's this scene where Kevin Costner, I know this is going to look not great for IBM, but I'm going to say it anyways, which is Kevin Costner has like a sledgehammer, and he's like trying to break down the wall to get the mainframe in the room. That's what it feels like sometimes, 'cause we create the best technology, but we forget sometimes about the last mile. You know like, we got to break down the wall. >> Where am I going to put it? >> You know, to get it in the room! So, honestly I think that's a lot of what we're doing. We're bridging that last mile, between these different audiences. So between developers, between ISVs, between commercial buyers. Like how do we actually make this technology, not just accessible to large enterprise, which are our main clients, but also to the other ecosystems, and other audiences out there. >> Well so that's interesting Joel, because as a potential partner of IBM, they want, obviously your go-to-market, your massive company, and great distribution channel. But at the same time, you want more than that. You know you want to have a closer, IBM always focuses on partnerships that have intrinsic value. So you talked about offerings, you talked about quantum, blockchain, off-camera talking about cloud containers. >> Joel: Yeah. >> I'd say cloud and containers may be a little closer than those others, but those others are going to take a lot of market development. So what are the offerings that you guys are bringing? How do they get into the hands of your partners? >> I mean, the commonality with all of these, all the emerging offerings, if you ask me, is the distributed nature of the offering. So if you look at blockchain, it's a distributed ledger. It's a distributed transaction chain that's secure. If you look at data, really and we can hark back to say, Hadoop, right before object storage, it's distributed storage, so it's not just storing on your hard drive locally, it's storing on a distributed network of servers that are all over the world and data centers. If you look at cloud, and containers, what you're really doing is not running your application on an individual server that can go down. You're using containers because you want to distribute that application over a large network of servers, so that if one server goes down, you're not going to be hosed. And so I think the fundamental shift that you're seeing is this distributed nature, which in essence is cloud. So I think cloud is just kind of a synonym, in my opinion, for distributed nature of our business. >> That's interesting and that brings up, you're right, cloud and Big Data/Hadoop, we don't talk about Hadoop much anymore, but it kind of got it all started, with that notion of leave the data where it is. And it's the same thing with cloud. You can't just stuff your business into the public cloud. You got to bring the cloud to your data. >> Joel: That's right. >> But that brings up a whole new set of challenges, which obviously, you're in a position just to help solve. Performance, latency, physics come into play. >> Physics is a rough one. It's kind of hard to avoid that one. >> I hear your best people are working on it though. Some other partnerships that you want to sort of, elucidate. >> Yeah, no, I mean we have some really great, so I think the key kind of partnership, I would say area, that I would allude to is, one of the things, and you kind of referenced this, is a lot of our partners, big or small, want to work with our top clients. So they want to work with our top banking clients. They want, 'cause these are, if you look at for example, MaRisk and what we're doing with them around blockchain, and frankly, talk about innovation, they're innovating containers for real, not virtual containers- >> And that's a joint venture right? >> Yeah, it is, and so it's exciting because, what we're bringing to market is, I also lead our startup programs, called the Global Entrepreneurship Program, and so what I'm focused on doing, and you'll probably see more to come this quarter, is how do we actually bridge that end-to-end? How do you, if you're startup or a small business, ultimately reach that kind of global business partner level? And so kind of bridging that, that end-to-end. So we're starting to bring out a number of different incentives for partners, like co-marketing, so I'll help startups when they're early, figure out product-market fit. We'll give you free credits to use our innovative technology, and we'll also bring you into a number of clients, to basically help you not burn all of your cash on creating your own marketing channel. God knows I did that when I was at a start-up. So I think we're doing a lot to kind of bridge that end-to-end, and help any partner kind of come in, and then grow with IBM. I think that's where we're headed. >> I think that's a critical part of your job. Because I mean, obviously IBM is known for its Global 2000, big enterprise presence, but startups, again, fuel that innovation fire. So being able to attract them, which you're proving you can, providing whatever it is, access, early access to cloud services, or like you say, these other offerings that you're producing, in addition to that go-to-market, 'cause it's funny, we always talk about how efficient, capital efficient, software is, but then you have these companies raising hundreds of millions of dollars, why? Because they got to do promotion, marketing, sales, you know, go-to-market. >> Yeah, it's really expensive. I mean, you look at most startups, like their biggest ticket item is usually marketing and sales. And building channels, and so yeah, if you're, you know we're talking to a number of partners who want to work with us because of the fact that, it's not just like, the direct kind of channel, it's also, as you kind of mentioned, there's other challenges that you have to overcome when you're working with a larger company. for example, security is a big one, GDPR compliance now, is a big one, and just making sure that things don't fall over, is a big one. And so a lot of partners work with us because ultimately, a number of the decision makers in these larger enterprises are going, well, I trust IBM, and if IBM says you're good, then I believe you. And so that's where we're kind of starting to pull partners in, and pull an ecosystem towards us. Because of the fact that we can take them through that level of certification. So we have a number of free online courses. So if you go to partners, excuse me, ibm.com/partners/learn there's a number of blockchain courses that you can learn today, and will actually give you a digital certificate, that's actually certified on our own blockchain, which we're actually a first of a kind to do that, which I think is pretty slick, and it's accredited at some of the universities. So I think that's where people are looking to IBM, and other leaders in this industry, is to help them become experts in their, in this technology, and especially in this emerging technology. >> I love that blockchain actually, because it's such a growing, and interesting, and innovative field. But it needs players like IBM, that can bring credibility, enterprise-grade, whether it's security, or just, as I say, credibility. 'Cause you know, this is, so much of negative connotations associated with blockchain and crypto, but companies like IBM coming to the table, enterprise companies, and building that ecosystem out is in my view, crucial. >> Yeah, no, it takes a village. I mean, there's a lot of folks, I mean that's a big reason why I came to IBM, three, four years ago, was because when I was in start-up land, I used to work for H20, I worked for Alpine Data Labs, Datameer, back in the Hadoop days, and what I realized was that, it's an opportunity cost. So you can't really drive true global innovation, transformation, in some of these bigger companies because there's only so much that you can really kind of bite off. And so you know at IBM it's been a really rewarding experience because we have done things like for example, we partnered with Girls Who Code, Treehouse, Udacity. So there's a number of early educators that we've partnered with, to bring code to, to bring technology to, that frankly, would never have access to some of this stuff. Some of this technology, if we didn't form these alliances, and if we didn't join these partnerships. So I'm very excited about the future of IBM, and I'm very excited about the future of what our partners are doing with IBM, because, geez, you know the cloud, and everything that we're doing to make this accessible, is bar none, I mean, it's great. >> I can tell you're excited.
