I'm john Kerry host of the cube with Sandy carter and Lynn martin Vm ware Vice president of government education and healthcare. Great to see you both cube alumni's although she's been on since 2014 your first time in 2018 18 2018. Great to see you. Great to see you. Thanks for coming on. Yeah, thanks for having us. So VM ware and 80 of us have a huge partnership. We've covered that announcement when Andy and Pat nelson was the Ceo. Then a lots happened, a lot of growth. A lot of success. Congratulations. Thank you. What's the big news with AWS this year in >>public sector. So we just received our authorization to operate for Fed ramp high. Um and we actually have a lot of joint roadmap planning. You are kicking off our job today with the Department of Defense and I. L five for the defense customers is also in process. So um a lot of fruits of a long time of labor. So very excited, >>awesome. So explain what does the Fed ramp authority to operate mean? What is >>that all about? So I would say in a nutshell, it's really putting a commercial offering through the security protocols to support the federal government needs. Um and there's different layers of that depending on the end user customers. So Fed ramp i across this, across all the civilian and non classified workloads in the federal government. Um probably applicability for state, local government as well with the new state Gramp focus. Um Fed ramp. I will meet or exceed that. So it will be applicable across the other parts of the government as well and all operated, you know, in a controlled environment jointly. So you get the VM ware software stack on top of the platform from A W. S and all the services that is more VM >>ware, faster deployed usage, faster acceleration. >>Yeah, so I would say um today the government operates on VM ware across all of the government, state, local and federal, um some workloads are still on prem many and this will really accelerate that transformation journey to the cloud and be able to move workloads quicker onto the BMC on AWS platform without free architect in your >>application, without giving away any kind of VM World Secret because that's next week. What is the value proposition of VM ware cloud, on AWS? What is the, what is the, what is the main value proposition you guys see in the public >>sector? So I see three and then Sandy chime in their two, I would say, you know, the costs in general to operate In the Cloud vs on prem or significant savings, we've seen savings over 300% on some customers. Um the speed on the application movement I think is a >>huge >>unique benefit on BMC on AWS. So traditionally to move to native cloud, you have to really do a lot of application were to be able to move those workloads where on BMC on AWS to move them pretty fast. And it also leverages the investments that the government agencies have already made in their operational tools and things of that nature. So it's not like a full reinvestment for something new but really leveraging both the skill sets in the data center in the I. T. Shops and the tools and investments you've bought over the past. And then the third area I would say is really getting the agility and flexibility and speed of a cloud experience. >>What's your, what's your reaction to the partnership? >>You know, we were just talking uh in a survey to our customers and 67% of them said that the velocity of the migration really matters to them. And one of the things that we do really well together is migrate very quickly, so we have workloads that we've migrated that have taken you know weeks months uh as opposed to years as they go over, which is really powerful. And then also tomorrow VM ware is with us in a session on data led migration. We were talking about data earlier and VM ware cloud on Aws also helps to migrate over like sequel server, database oracle databases so that we can also leverage that data now on the cloud to make better decisions and >>real time decisions as >>well. It's been really interesting to watch the partnership and watching VM ware transform as well, not only the migrations are in play with the public sector, there's a lot of them, believe me, healthcare, you name every area. It's all, all those old systems are out there. You know, I'm talking about out there. But now with microservices and containers, you've got tansy and you got the whole cloud, native VM ware stack emerging that's going to allow customers to re factor This is a dynamic that is kind of under reported >>Migration is one thing. But I think, I think that the whole Tan Xue portfolio is one of the most interesting things going on in VM ware. And we also have some integration going on on D. M. C on AWS with tan to we don't have that pentagram. Yeah. For the government market, but it's on the road mapping plans and we have other customers And I would say, you know, some of my non federal government customers were able to move workloads in hours, not even days or weeks. There you go, literally back and forth. And very impressive on the BMC on AWS platform. So, um, as we expand things in with the Tan Xue platform is, you know, Sandy talked about this yesterday and our partners summit, Everyone's talking about containers and things like that. VM ware is doing a lot of investment around the cooper Netease plus the application migration work and things of that nature. >>I'd love to get you guys reaction to this comment because I've seen a lot of change. Obviously we're all seeing it. I've actually interviewed a bunch of aWS and VM ware customers and I would call um some of the categories skeptics the old school cloud holding the line. And then when the pandemic hit those skeptics flip over because they see the value. In fact I actually interviewed a skeptic who became an award winner who went on the record and said I love hey w I love the cloud. I was a skeptic because you saw the value the time to value. This is really a key dynamic. I know it's kind of thrown out a lot of digital transformation or I. T. Modernization but the agility and that kind of speed. It becomes the number one thing. What's your reaction to the skeptics converting? And then what happens >>next? Um So I think there's still a lot of folks in I. T. That our tree huggers or I call him several huggers uh um pick your term. And I think that um there is some concern about what their role will be. So I think one of the differences delivering cloud services to your internal constituents is really understand the business value of the applications and what that delivers from a mission perspective back to your client. And that's a shift for data center owners to really start thinking more from the customer mission perspective than or my servers running you know, do you have enough storage capacity blah blah blah. So I think that creates that skepticism and part of that's around what's my role going to be. So in the cloud transformation of a customer, there's all this old people part that becomes really the catalyst and I think the customers that have been very sad and really leverage that and then retool the business value back to the end users around the mission have done the best job. >>I mean we talk about this all the time, it's really hard to get the best debris partners together and then make it all work cloud, it becomes easier than doing it very bespoke or waterfall way >>Yeah, I have to say with the announcement yesterday, we're going to have a lot more partner with partners. So you and I have talked about this a few times where we bring partners together to work with each other. In fact, Lynn is going to go meet with one of those partners right after the interview um that want to really focus in on a couple of particular areas to really drive this and I think, you know, part of the, you know, as your re factoring or migrating VMro over the other big benefit is skills, people have really strong, these fear skills, the sand skills, >>operation >>operation tools Yeah. And so they want to preserve those, I think that's part of the beauty of doing VM ware cloud on Aws is you get to take those skills with you into the new world as well, >>you know, I was going to just ask the next question ai ops or day two operations, a big buzzword Yeah and that is essentially operation mindset, that devoPS DEVOps two is coming. Emily Freeman gave a keynote with our last event we had with with amazon public showcase revolution and devops devoPS 2.0 is coming which is now faster, security is built in the front end, so all these things are happening so now it's coming into the public sector with the GovCloud. So I have to ask you Lynn what are some of the big successes you've had with on the gulf cloudy, just Govcloud. >>So I would say we've had a lot of customers across the state local side especially um that weren't waiting for fed ramp and those customers were able to move like I mentioned this earlier and you guys just touched on it. So I think the benefit and the benefit, one of our best customers is Emmett Right? Absolutely mitt, God bless them. They've been on every cloud journey with VM ware since 2014 we moved in my three years now and talk about a skeptic. So although Mark is very revolutionary and tries new things, he was like oh who knows and literally when we moved those workloads it was minutes and the I. T shop day one there was no transformation work for them, it was literally using all the tools and things in that environment. So the progress of that and the growth of the applications that have been able to move their things. That took 2 to 3 years before we're all done within six months and really being able to expand those business values back out for the services that he delivers to the customers. So I think you'll see quite a bit across state, local federal government. You know, we have U. S. Marshals, thank them very much. They were our sponsor that we've been working with the last few years. We have a defense customer working with us around aisle five. >>Um you know, if we could also thank Coal Fire because Cold Fire is one of our joint partners talking about partner partners and they were played a critical role in helping BM We're cloud on AWS and get the fed ramp high certifications. >>They were R three p. O. We hired them for their exercise expertise with AWS as well as helping the BMR. >>Well the partnership with the war has been a really big success. Remember the naysayers when that was announced? Um it really has worked out well for you guys. Um I do want to ask you one more thing and we don't mind. Um One of the biggest challenges that you see the blockers or challenges from agencies moving to the cloud cover cloud because you know, people are always trying to get those blockers out of the way but it's an organizational culture is a process technology. What's your what's your take on that land. Um >>I think a lot does have to do with the people and the organizational history. I think somewhere you need a leader and a champion that really wants to change for good. I call Pat, used to call a tech for good. I love that. Right to really, you know, get things moving for the customers. I mean one of the things I'm most proud about supporting the government business in general though is really the focus on the mission is unparalleled, you know, in the sectors we support, you say, education or government or healthcare. Right? All three of those sectors, there's never any doubt on what that focuses. So I think the positives of it are like, how do you get into that change around that? And that could be systems, there's less what's VMC ON AWS as we mentioned, because the tools already in the environment so they know how to use it. But I do think there's a transformation on the data center teams and really becoming moving from technology to the business aspects a little bit more around the missions and things of that. >>What's interesting is that it's so, I mean, I actually love this environment even though it's kind of hard on everyone. Education and health care have been disrupted unprecedented ways and it's never gonna change back? Remember healthcare, hip data silos, silos, education don't spend on it. >>That education was the most remarkable part. Unbelievable. I started working in february before school started with one of the large cities everyone can guess and just the way they were able to pivot so fast was amazing and I don't think anybody, I think we did like five years of transformation in six months and it's never going to go back. >>I completely a great yes education. We just did a piece of work with CTS around the world and education is one of the most disrupted as you said health care and then the third one is government and all three of those are public sector. So the three most disruptive sectors or mission areas are in public sector which has created a lot of opportunity for us and our partnership to add value. I mean that's what we're all about right customer obsession working backwards from the customer and making sure that our partnership continues to add value to those customers >>while we love the tech action on the cube. Obviously we'd like to document and pontificate and talk about it. Digital revolution. Every application now is in play globally. Not just for I. T. But for society, public sector more than ever is the hottest area on the planet. >>Absolutely. And I would say that now our customers are looking at E. S. G. Environmental, they want to know what you're doing on sustainability. They want to know what you're doing for society. We just had a bid that came in and they wanted to understand our diversity plan and then open governance. They're looking for that openness. They're not just artificial intelligence but looking at explainable AI as well. So I think that we have a chance to impact environment societies and governance >>and you mentioned space earlier. Another way I talked with closure. I mean I'm an interview today too, but what's happening with space and what you can monitor disasters, understand how to deploy resources to areas that might have challenges, earthquakes or fires or other things. All new things are happening. >>Absolutely. And all that data people like to say, why are you spending money on space? There's so many problems here, but that data that comes from space is going to impact us here on earth. And so all the things that we're doing, all that data could be used with VM ware cloud on AWS as well. >>Well, you watch closely we got some space coverage coming. I got a big scoop. I'm gonna release soon about something behind the dark side of the moon on in terms of space sovereignty coming a lot of action, cybersecurity in space. That's really heavy right now. But >>aren't you glad that VMC cloud on AWS isn't hidden on the dark side of the moon. It's >>right on the congratulations. Thanks for coming on. You guys are doing great. My name is David Locke. They still minimus here. John Barrier is also in the house. We're covering the active FIO data driven 19 event. Second year for this conference. It's all about data. It's all about being data driven. Charlie Quanis here. He's the director of data and a I offering management and IBM. Charlie, thanks for coming on The Cube. >> Happy to be here. Thank you. >> So active Theo has had a long history with IBM. Effect with company got started at a time the marketplace took a virtual ization product and allowed them to be be first really and then get heavily into the data virtualization. They since evolved that you guys are doing a lot of partnerships together. We're going to get into that, But talk about your role with an IBM and you know, what is this data and a I offering management thing? >> He absolutely eso data and a I is our business unit within IBN Overall Corporation, our focus and our mission is really about helping our customers drive better business outcomes through data. Leveraging data in the contacts and the pursuit of analytics and artificial intelligence are augmented intelligence. >> So >> a portion of the business that I'm part of his unified governance and integration and you think about data and I as a whole, you could think about it in the context of the latter day. I often times when we talk about data and I we talk about the foundational principles and capabilities that are required to help companies and our customers progress on their journey. They II and it really is about the information architecture that we help them build. That information architectures essentially a foundational prerequisite around that journey to a i. R. Analytics and those layers of the latter day I r. Collecting the data and making sure you haven't easily accessible to the individual's need it organizing the data. That's where the unified governance in Immigration folio comes into play. Building trusted business ready data, high quality with governance around that making shorts available to be used later, thie analyzed layer in terms of leveraging the data for analytics and die and then infuse across the organization, leveraging those models across the organization. So within that context of data and I, we partnered with Active Theo at the end of 2018. >> So before we get into that, I have started dropped. You know, probably Rob Thomas is, and I want a double click on what you just said. Rob Thomas is is famous for saying There is no way I without a training, no, no artificial intelligence without information architecture so sounds good. You talk about governance. That's obviously part of it. But what does that mean? No A without a. >> So it is really about the fundamental prerequisites to be able to have the underlying infrastructure around the data assets that you have. A fundamental tenet is that data is one of your tremendous assets. Any enterprise may have a lot of time, and effort has been spent investing and man hours invested into collecting the data, making sure it's available. But at the same time, it hasn't been freed up to be. A ploy used for downstream purpose is whether it's operational use cases or analytical cases, and the information architecture is really about How do you frame your data strategy so that you have that data available to use and to drive business outcomes later. And those business outcomes, maybe results of insights that are driven out of the way the data but they got could also be part of the data pipeline that goes into feeding things like application development or test data management. And that's one of the areas that were working with that feeling. >> So the information architecture's a framework that you guys essentially publish and communicate to your clients. It doesn't require that you have IBM products plugged in, but of course, you can certainly plug in. IBM products are. If you're smart enough to develop information architect here presumably, and you got to show where your products fit. You're gonna sell more stuff, but it's not a prerequisite. I confuse other tooling if I wanted to go there. The framework is a good >> prerequisite, the products and self of course, now right. But the framework is a good foundational. Construct around how you can think about it so that you can progress along that journey, >> right? You started talking about active fio. You're relationship there. See that created the Info sphere Virtual data pipeline, right? Why did you developed that product or we'll get into it? >> Sure, it's all part of our overall unified covers and integration portfolio. Like I said, that's that organized layer of the latter day I that I was referring to. And it's all about making sure you have clear visibility and knowing what they had assets that you have. So we always talk about in terms of no trust in use. No, the data assets you have. Make sure you understand the data quality in the classification around that data that you have trust the data, understand the lineage, understand how it's been Touch Haussmann, transformed building catalog around that data and then use and make sure it's usable to downstream applications of down street individuals. And the virtual data pipeline offering really helps us on that last category around using and making use of the data, the assets that you have putting it into directly into the hands of the users of that data. So whether they be data scientist and data engineers or application developers and testers. So the virtual data pipeline and the capabilities based on activity sky virtual appliance really help build a snapshot data provide the self service user interface to be able to get into the hands of application developers and testers or data engineers and data scientist. >> And why is that important? Is it because they're actually using the same O. R. O R. Substantially similar data sets across their their their their work stream. Maybe you could explain that it's important >> because the speed at which the applications are being built insights are being driven is requiring that there is a lot more agility and ability to self service into the data that you need. Traditional challenges that we see is you think about preparing to build an application or preparing to build an aye aye model, building it, deploy it and managing it the majority of the time. 80% of the time. Todd spilled front, preparing the data talking, trying to figure out what data you need asking for and waiting for two weeks to two months to try to get access to that data getting. And they're realizing, Oh, I got the wrong data. I need to supplement that. I need to do another iteration of the model going back to try to get more data on. That's you have the area that application developers and data scientists don't necessarily want to be spending their >> time on. >> And so >> we're trying to shrink >> that timeframe. And how do we shrink? That is by providing business users our line of business users, data scientist application developers with the individuals that are actually using the data to provide their own access to it, right To be able to get that snapshot that point in time, access to that point of production data to be able to then infuse it into their development process. They're testing process or the analytic development process >> is we're we're do traditional tooling were just traditional tooling fit in this sort of new world because you remember what the Duke came out. It was like, Oh, that enterprise data warehouses dead. And then you ask customers like What's one of the most important things you're doing in your big data? Play blind and they'd say, Oh, yeah, we need R w. So I could now collect more data for lower costs keep her longer low stuff. But the traditional btw was still critical, but well, you were just describing, you know, building a cube. You guys own Cognos Obviously, that's one of the biggest acquisitions that I'm being made here is a critical component. Um, you talk about data quality, integration, those things. It's all the puzzle fits together in this larger mosaic and help us understand that. Sure >> and well, One of the fundamental things to understand is you have to know what you have right, and the data catalogue is a critical component of that data strategy. Understanding where your enterprise assets sit, they could be structured information that may be a instruction information city and file repositories or e mails, for example. But understanding what you have, understanding how it's been touched, how it's been used, understanding the requirements and limitations around that data understanding. Who are the owners of that data? So building that catalog view of your overall enterprise assets fundamental starting point from a governess standpoint. And then from there, you can allow access to individuals that are interested in understanding and leveraging that date assets that you may have in one pool here challenges data exists across enterprise everywhere. Right silos that may have rose in one particular department that then gets murdered in with another department, and then you have two organization that may not even know what the other individual has. So the challenge is to try to break down those silos, get clarity of the visibility around what assets so that individuals condemned leverage that data for whatever uses they may have, whether it be development or testing or analytics. >> So if I could generalize the problem, Yeah, too much data, not enough value. And I'll talk about value in terms of things that you guys do that I'm inferring. Risk reduction. Correct uh, speed to insights. Andan. Ultimately, lowering costs are increasing revenue. That's kind of what it's all >> the way to talk about business outcomes in terms of increase revenue, decrease costs or reduce risk, right in terms of governance, those air the three things that you want to unlock for your customers and you don't think about governance and creating new revenue streams. We generally don't think about in terms of reducing costs, but you do think about it oftentimes in terms of reducing your risk profile and compliance. But the ability to actually know your data built trust and then use that data really does open up different opportunities to actually build new application new systems of engagement uses a record new applications around analytics and a I that will unlock those different ways that we can market to customers. Cell two customers engage our own employees. >> Yes. So the initial entry into the organism the budget, if you will, is around that risk reduction. Right? Can you stand that? I got all this data and I need to make sure that I'm managing a corner on the edicts of my organization. But you actually seeing we play skeptic, you're really seeing value beyond that risk reduction. I mean, it's been nirvana in the compliance and governance world, not just compliance and governance and, you know, avoiding fees and right getting slapped on the wrist or even something worse? Sure, but we can actually, through the state Equality Initiative and integration, etcetera, etcetera Dr. Other value. You actually seeing that? >> Yes. We are actually, particularly last year with the whole onslaught of GDP are in the European Union, and the implications of GDP are here in the U. S. Or other parts of the world. Really was a pervasive topic on a lot of what we were talking about was specifically that compliance make sure you stay on the right side of the regulation, but the same time investing in that data architecture, information, architecture, investing in the governance programme actually allowed our customers to understand the different components that are touching the individual. Because it's all about individual rights and individual privacy. It's understanding what they're buying, understanding what information we're collecting on them, understanding what permissions and consent that we have, the leverage their information really allowed. Our customers actually delivered that information and for a different purpose. Outside of the whole compliance mindset is compliance is a difficult nut to crack. This is breaking news for everybody, including you. You had just won the Definite Creator Award. Tell us about now you're feeling since you just got that news. >> Well, in the same time, I feel excited. I feel honored and I feel so humble. It's a bigger word to win. And I'm very proud that I can bring this. There's a way back home to my my company. >> Did they tell you this is only the second year that they've given out these awards? Did it tell you some of the criteria? Because obviously you were selected and were surprised. Just learned up today. Pretty cool surprise to happen. Did they give you in context about who they're looking for you, Like your activity in the definite community and things like that. It's a little bit about that >> exactly. So they're looking for the people who are having a great impact and more great advocates of definite outside of the Siskel world. So when they're going to clients and where they're going to the developer community in the different countries so they're looking for advocates, they're also looking for people who are great contributors to the network. So if you have some very nice code examples and you're posting them on the Codex and so they had a couple of pretty is that they're following. >> And how long have you been an active member of the definite community? >> I'm quite the veteran. I've been there since the very beginning of the definite. So I before even the release, I already got reviewed the information that something in this direction we'LL come. And then I was there from the very beginning, The journey continued with being there at the first definite express event being now, for example, here definite create a last year, I've organized the first different express event at the partner so together in my company with the mission. Later, we're organized the first definite expressive end in the front foot where we have invited clients but also a lot of people from our engineering teams. So quite the fantastic journeys. What's the biggest surprise or notable change with definite community? >> There are a couple of things were changing. So inside the company, for example, with the adoption of definite and with people going very often on definitely have seen a different style of learning. So engineers now have a different way of how do I approach learning? Where do I go if I need to find something and another change is related to how people interact with each other? Because, yeah, you know, like the network engineer was there, he was doing very cool. His staff, maybe sometimes he was also sharing, but definite the entire opened. This is now standard, so people are sharing between them. Colleagues are also taking on in even internal social media like yammer and the posting. Hey, look, I've done this cool stuff and it's only like a lot of it. It's also thanks to definite, because it brought a little bit a new style of things. >> And they bring definite create, which is gonna cloud native kind of mindset. How has that gone over with network engineers being coding? Python machine learning, Iraqi new things are coming. >> So they're all on the transformation path, and our company's doing a lot of activities in this direction. We've had, For example, last year, our, um Wei have ah, very good advocate for coding on the mission leader. His name is Anthony Shaw. He had last year an entire initiative running learned to code on. So we had colleagues from all over the company independently of the department you work from, which started to code, right? So we had way had them learning how to code. And then this is basically the very bay a fundament on you can refuse. Start afterwards with learning pets in the definite. So it's quite a transformation. And I would say that it's a nice joining Toby. And >> how have you guys? The gentleman that you just mentioned on yourself is, as you described a veteran of the definite community. So on one hand, Anthony show with his very successful initiative, this has brought the transformation from the learning side. And on the other hand, by starting to have skills, we have brought out the news through our clients. And so this has impacted the business. And when the business is impacting and when you show a business value by using automation by using the net or program ability, then the entire company is aware. And this is how afterwards way started to okay. We really embraced >> the challenge, really sort of changing the culture of dimension data in a good way. >> Yes, I wouldn't say it's It's totally changing, but we see that way are very easily adapting to the new way. Talk about >> the automation peace. What do you do in your day to day job? Take us through a day in the life of what you're doing with the cool things you do. Struggles, challenges, opportunities. What's the fun stuff? What's the not so fun stuff that software's automating away. >> Okay, very nice. So on one hand, on the day to day basis, we analyzed with our clients what they're doing, and we are coming with suggestions where they could be faster. And also we're coming with suggestions where they could reduce errors and someone. So basically, we go. We talkto our clients. We're coming back with the problems they have with prepare for them a solution, then afterwards. The solution. It's mainly based on using AP eyes. Scrapie eyes are also amongst our favorite. Once we are presenting the solution than the clients are saying, Yes, it's something I would like to have in my network or no, it's something I don't want. Then, once the clients are happy with the solution that we're proposing them, then we start developing were developing in the Angel methodology, so very close touch with the client failed fast and improved and have a very inter way of doing things afterwards. Once the project is done, you know, we continue improving what we have with the customer with the clients and continuing are joining from there. This is part of what a day in a software engineering department looks like or like in a native ox engineering department looks on top of this. We need all the time to take care of best practices. How do we called? We need to take care of being security compliance, like working in Europe. You know, we have a lot of rules regulations that we need to respect, and we are of some of these rules and tradition. We have very proud that they are there and they're there to protect us and to protect the data which somethings belongs to us. So this is also a topic that way are working on day today. Afterwards were also working a lot and improving our skills. We're having a weekly making learn, for example, where someone is waiting to take someone else's. Presenting the technical topic. So it's it's an entire process and these are all the people that were running on the day today. >> You know, one of the big trends wass going back ten years, Dev Ups Infrastructure is code Great great great trend now Net Dev ups you mentioned that term is about Dev ops applied networking. That's a big theme of definite definite creators. Programmable networks. What does that mean to you? People say Net devil. >> It means a lot. It's very close to my heart. It's also the topic of my presentation later. Today. I have a speaker's not a tech talk in another works A lot of people might think. OK, it's just network continuous. We're writing something. One script in the network. Well, it's not just that. It's a lot of components. It's also about the culture. It's about the people. It's about the process. You're involving. It's about what tools you're using me. The entire net evolves is really close to my heart because it's an entire mindset, which is which needs >> to learn about it. What they where should they go to learn about? Net Dev ops. Sorry, Where should people go to learn about Do Net? De Bob's what it is. >> It's a very, very good entry point. It's the definite right. You have there a lot off learning labs you have the sandbox is yours. Have tracks can go from there and of course you can. You go online, you have a lot of courses. You have a lot of bloggers. You have a lot of you for answers. Were posting about what's what's going on and what you should adapt in your network. Uh, then, yes, you can also use some books. There are also some nice books there, of course, and tow the attention because by the time a book is released, maybe that information could be different. Created, you know, like it runs quite fast. A lot of activity. >> Yes, it is indeed a lot of activity, and I'd like to believe that data is somehow. Then you go though the new petroleo s o having a handle, the data and something that valuable indeed. >> How you found if we look at you know that the participants that air here, we've got, you know, developers, infrastructure, folks who were moving towards adopting De Bob's kind of connecting them with the app developers. How have you seen people change? Job roles change as, uh, these other folks are adopting develops. Especially now that you're talking about bringing in the network. That's how Have you seen roles change and how has your job in particular changed and advance and evolved with practice of Net Dev >> ops. So I was starting the first part of your question. Rolls have indeed changed a lot. And this also I can see in the moment when we try to recruit because there is no profile out there that say okay, I want to recruit another bobs. You will not find on the market native ops of already built as a professor, you need thio recruit people when you see the potential and try to bring thiss new colleagues into the Net evolves journey. So this is one part on how Rosa revolving and then very direct to myself on my career has evolved. I think it's very linked to how the entire definite community has evolved. I've started five years ago the mission it and it was my first. A big job in Germany on my career has evolved in a very rapid way. What are some of the skills, maybe even some of the softer skills, like being a good collaborator, being a good communicator, that you would recommend that the younger generation really fine tune in addition to their technology expertise that you think this is going to make someone really gets this this role and can help really transform it. >> So I think outside of all the technical skills so they can acquire in terms of OK, programming, networking and someone, there are two big soft skills that they should have. And in my opinion, it's something very important, something I'm looking at, every person I'm interviewing, thiss to our curiosity. You need to be curious about what's out there. If you're not serious, you cannot evolve. And the second one is learning ability. Even if you don't know something, you still you say Okay, I don't know when, but I will Girl go and learn about it, you know, like wear learning every day, something like what was there five years ago and what is there to years ago? A customer out there that needs needs an extra arm into it. We've done a lot of interviews of public sector folks with their towns and cities, air, ground rules, municipalities, cities, their I t light. And then they don't have the Dev ops expertise, but clouds a perfect fit for them. But they have a lot of certain characters. Whether it's email is very ephemeral. People come and go, So getting people collaborating in these distinct user groups that have different roles and responsibilities is a challenge. How are you guys solving that? Because there's something I know you guys have worked on. There's a challenge that's only Republicans for enterprises do. How do you bring people that are distinct user populations that have an application or roll or use case into a collaborative, horizontally scaleable >> system? We show Be honest way. Go in there and we go in there and we discover as to what they're doing now, what are their pain points? What do they want? Change where they want to go and then we show them the collaboration started. We shone like what makes team's way? Show him all of the, uh, meetings room devices, things like that. And then not just on the collaboration side, but also if there helping with three, six, five their security than Rocky. That's how we bring. Date is moving from Point A to point B. All right, but he's kind of integration challenges. Kind of seamless program ability is the core theme here. What's your reaction? Thoughts on all this? >> No. >> Well, first off, this is my first definite create. I've been to other Siskel lives have not been too. Don't think great yet so so far, I'm enjoying this a lot. It's I like the tight niche, the community style of this of this event I'm sorry. Go back, >> Tio. Go live a little creations that are going on here. Very community already. Kind of be open source projects. Yeah, people talking to each other, a lot of hallway conversations. But it's a kind of a new kind of collaborative model that customers are now getting exposed to write. This is something >> new. I mean, it is. It's new, and I'm finding a lot times where a lot of customers and clients they've heard about it, but they don't know yet. So it's our job to actually get them to adopt to it and and also adapt to it as well. So it's almost like how we have our own like community here. For definite. It's almost how can we take that structure and show it to our clients >> and translation involved Kind of kind of taper down the excitement, maybe, or keeping up questions for you people watching that aren't here. A definite what's that? What's the vibe here? Like, what's some of the cools? Things you've seen and heard are something Well, the keynote was >> great either. Yes, the data out there, >> all that data and they just machine learning A I just watching people, seeing what they're doing, kind of almost like predicting what they're going to do >> and every little bit, actually, a little bit. I agree with you. I thought they did a great job with that, Especially coming off the heels of Coachella and showing how they can enable Cisco enable developers for social folks to set up secure networks of different sizes and also be able to use in real time machine learning a eye to evaluate what's going on the offensive. And that was a very cool, real world example of what they showed. Leveraging machine learning, identifying. There's there's an issue here. There's an altercation. They surprised at a sports event, right? And deploying those. It has a lot security, many sports events, though I thought it was all that the security was just casually walking up to fight. That's another thing >> that you would slow >> down. But you don't know what >> you're right. >> And it is so many more etiquette rules now at events, whether it's, you know, hate crimes or just, you know, just violent language fights. Also, everyone sees those that write that events. But this actual now, surveillance tech out there. We're integrating with connect allies with Iraqi doing eight about and so that I have it where that there'll be a trigger or Web hook from one my rocky cameras like emotion which will trigger which will create a ticket and connect allies so they can help out some help tasks service desk and then that which will also they get thrown into teams and click on the ticket and then also run commands and grab a snapshot from the camera. It's not just what you might think it is, it seems to be connected tissue you meant. There's a great demo that added to she's showing around. They are with looking at network configuration. We're obviously to be connecting all of this together. What's your view on this? What's that? >> I for one, I love muraki. I run Rocky at home, so five the viol. Although the wireless is switching cameras and just that, it's it's one. Really. They have, like their own room platform that connects has all their devices connecting into the dashboard, and you could do so much with it that they're actually they're open up Now. The eyes, the web hooks this so much things that you can actually integrate with it. It's it's great, and it's the analytics that you get from it. >> And this is what you're talking about really about bringing these teams together through Webb Hooks for AP, eyes in through Morocco, the connected to direct and then allow the APS to be valuable, cross different groups >> very valuable, but then so that then you don't have it on. Engineer doesn't have have to touch different applications or devices. They get it all from one and from that one application, click and go to where you need to get got. >> So we're only on halfway through Day one of your first up that crate. But it sounds like you've already been exposed to so many things that I could see the wheels turning us without anticipating that you're going to be able to bring back to liberty. We're coming to you Live from the Computer System Museum at the third annual Cisco Definite Create twenty nineteen Excited to be joined by Joycelyn Developer Advocate from Postman Joyce Welcome to the Q Thank you. So you are a developer advocate. But postman is a tool that helps the community learn about Cisco ap eyes Postman is a Cisco was a customer of yours but a little bit about your experience at definite cry Because you have an interesting story from last year, which was your first year of this event >> Exactly last year. We just happen to stop by. And as I was walking through this very room you hear all these workshops going on behind us My ears perked up cause I heard somebody say python in postman or two of most powerful tools And I was like, Hey, I >> work a postman >> So I like, stopped in to see and I slapped my team back immediately at the office there, really using postman to teach Cisco Technology here. >> That was surprising to you. And here you are now here a year later. Tell us some of the things that you're expecting to learn and hear and feel and see from twenty nineteen. Create. >> So this year I hear about all these people learning postman learning about tech through postman. So I'm actually giving to talks this afternoon The first talks talking about building the community because a lot of people use postman in the second talk is about using mock servers. Had a fake an AP I until you actually coded and deploy it. >> Take a minute to explain. Postman. Why is it so popular? Why Francisco jazzed about it? What are they using it for? How they bring that in take a minute to talk about what you guys do >> Well, several years ago, when postman started as a side project was primarily for developers and help developers do their day to day jobs. But we found a lot more People are interacting with technology or working at tech companies where they might not have the setup to initiate a request. AP I request, and so postman allows them tio on their desktop be able. Teo interact with the tech in a way that normally they wouldn't have the whole set up to do it. >> So So in terms of developers, what's is a freemium model? They do have a free hand leads >> premium. And I think within the last year we've scooch almost anything that used to be a paid feature down to free so you can try it out. And in fact, if you have a small business or a side project, it's it's free. >> And what's the talk track? You're gonna have to get to talks. One on community, one on serve servers. Monster. >> Yeah, So Mock service is something that I thought might be interesting to this crowd. But a lot of these people have are in charge of managing the infrastructure or supporting existing AP eyes or services that are out in the cloud. And so mock servers are a way that you can essentially mock an FBI for parallel development or to build a prototype put into >> you. And so this helps develop, get faster app up and running. And then what happens when they have to get rid of mock server and put a real server on there? They had built out the re p I. Is that what happens? >> Typically, they're spinning Oppa marks over first, and then they're building out their own servers. So, yeah, they would swap out the mock with their own. >> And what's the other talk on community? Just how did do a community open sores? What's the aspects of the community talk? >> It's kind of on >> odd topic for this kind of crowd, but a lot of people work for companies that are or work for teams where they're just trying to build, like, a sense of community or foster some sort of mission. And so just telling the Postman story and Postman was free for absolutely free for a super long time in growth has just been astronomical. >> You're six million developers on the planet working on that, but I can't say on the company's one hundred thirty million plus AP eyes. And that's all. Just since the company was established in twenty fourteen after this sort of side project that you talked about so pretty, >> pretty quick >> growth trajectory that you guys are on >> and a lot of it was word of mouth. I mean, until I came here last year and heard all the system people talking about how they're using postman. We did not know that. >> So how have how has Postman actually evolved your technology in the last year? Just since you stumbled upon? Wow, this we're actually really hot here. We are really facilitator of developers. This community that's now what five hundred eighty five thousand members strong Learn about Cisco AP eyes. I'd love to know how that has sort of catalyzed growth for postman. Well, back in the >> day, Postman started as developer first. So here's an individual developer. How can they work more effectively? But teams like Cisco you'll be lucky if you find a team of ten people these air hundreds and thousands of developers coming together to work together. So postman as a tool has shifted from focusing on on ly the developer to how do you support developers working in larger teams? >> So what? The community angle? Because one of the things that Lise and I were just talking about you she does a lot of women in tech interviews with Cube and we're building out these communities ourselves and in Silicon Valley, the old expression fake it till you make it. It's kind of a startup buzzword, but people try to fake community or by community. You really can't get away with that. In communities, communities are very fickle. A successful open source projects you've gotta contribute. You've gotta have presence. You've got to show your work to get you to the bad actors. It's >> pretty >> efficient. But things air new now in communities this modern era coming into slag, you got tools. How is community evolving? That's your perspective on this. >> That's an interesting question. I think the community you never wanted fake community absolutely agree, and something that Postman is kind of lagged on is the community's been huge, but we haven't really been involved. So around the world we have people giving workshops that we don't even know about, like around the world. And how can we support them and allow them to tell, teach things consistently and teach best practices? So I wouldn't say unfortunately, well or fortunately, we're not in the position where we have to encourage the growth, but rather just support the people that are already doing this. This >> is the pure ingredient Teo Community development, because you're enabling other people to be relevant with their communities. So you're not so much like just trying to be a community player. You're just your product enables community growth. >> Absolutely. Yeah. >> You just gotta come feed >> postman as a tool. And then postman, the seeds >> of community. >> Yeah, we're healthy. >> So talk about some of the where you guys locate. How many people in your company? What's this? What numbers >> were headquartered in San Francisco. We have a huge engineering department in Bangalore where our founders air from. And I think just a few months ago, we started having distributed people. So now we're everywhere. I think we're about a hundred head count. Uh, fifty five percent of that is engineering. So where? I don't know where a >> start off. I mean, they were started hunting with number two hundred thousand companies using the technologies. We said over six million developers. How do you get a handle on to your point earlier supporting all of these groups that are out there enabling us Johnson enabling and fueling communities like Deb. Nanny? How do you start that with a one hundred person organization? >> Yeah. I'm so glad you're like, Wow, that doesn't seem like a huge organization because other people are like I thought you are way bigger than that. One thing is that we do listen to our community. And so if they're having a pain point way, try to aggregate all those voices and then come out with a cohesive road map because what might be the loudest voice for even a lot of voices might not be what's right for the tool. The other thing is, we're not open source company, but we have a ton of open source projects. So the community has again developed converters, integrations all these open source tools that for their specific workflow works for them. And actually, they're sharing with the community. >> How did you get into all this? How did you join the company? What attracted you and what's what story? >> Well, I'm in San Francisco, so I work for a tech company. I have a hodgepodge background, but I won't go into because it just sounds confusing. Some people call me the Wolverine at work. >> That's a nickname. >> Um, hopefully it's not because I'm so Harry, but because I've had many lives, so I I kind of bring a little bit of that, too. My developer advocate role, a little bit of product, A little bit of marketing, little bit of the business side. >> It's good versatility, lot of versatility. Yeah, let me ask a question. One of the things we've been covering is actually we love cloud nated. We've been covering cloud in the early days. Oh, wait. Oh, seven All the way through Love Cloud native We get that check enterprises Ha! You see Cisco using your stuff. Enterprise developers are hot right now. People are fast filling applications has got a cloud native flare to a definite create. It's also gotta integrate into the classic enterprise. What's the difference in your view and your experience, your observations between enterprise developers and then your classic You know, hard core cloud native developer >> I would say that's something that postman, as an organization is dealing with right now because we started developer first. Now we're finding Oh, it's a different person making these decisions. What tools should we use? Sometimes it's top down, but at the end of the day, it's always the developer that is going to support a top down decision. A developer that's going to find the utility out of certain tool. So we're shifting our focus. But not necessarily by that much. Because long as you focus developer first, it's still >> so enterprise. Kind of taking more of a classic cloud developer or native cloud native developer. You think that kind of profile you in your mind? >> Well, again, you have an enterprise developer. But what? Where's that enterprise developer going to be in two years? So we're not hanging our hat too much on Enterprise? Only now >> what do you want? The Ciscos measures of programming. The network. I mean, infrastructure is code. That's kind of a nice value proposition. Take the complexity away. What's your take on reaction toe that vision? >> I don't know what you're talking >> about. I don't know what part. >> What part of tell you are. >> Well, they're saying developers shouldn't have to configure hardware. You know, abstract the network capabilities out and make it code. So the developers just it just happens. >> Got it? Yeah, And if you think about how you Khun scale, can you scale linearly or exponentially? Enabling every developer or team to deploy their own code at their own pace with their own tools is something that allows you to scale exponentially. So things like mock servers that were talking about earlier. If I'm relying on somebody, that's my bottleneck. To spin this up with the normal workflow for the organization, that's a bottleneck. Spin up your own mock server. >> Find mock servers were great. Resource because remember the old days and mobile the emulators kind of had to have an emulator to kind of get going. Okay, that was, like five years, but similar model like, Hey, I don't need I can't build that out now. But I need to know what it's gonna look like so I can get this done. >> And that allows you to iterated at the fastest >> level at the local >> developer level. >> We've been covering the old days here in the Cube world. >> Throwback. A long thing with the Cube, where he with Amy Loki G Sweet vice president of U X for Google. Great to see you. Thanks for coming on. >> Thank you so much for having me. >> So we've been here. It's day two of three days of coverage. A lot of action here. Great profile of of attendees. You got developers. You've got a lot of corporate enterprise focus kind of cloud coming. Maid. She has been the part of the theme, But I loved your key. No, you're showing all the cool features of G. Sweep of the new innovations was kind of going away. What's coming around the corner? What was the mean exercise of Aquino was the main theme. What was the key message? >> Yeah, well, I think in general we are really excited about how g speed is adapting to the changing landscape of work. And so what you heard me talk about was really how we're seeing how ghee sweets, playing a key role and connecting mobile remote workforces. So those front line workers with the back office. And that's a scenario that we're seeing happening today with our customers and many different industries, some unexpected, some expected. So, you know, we heard about AirAsia aviation industry on DH. Then we also talked about a scenario in the retail industry. And so what we're seeing is that these frontline workers are using products like hangouts, chat to communicate very quickly and send data and information back to the back office. S O G. Sweets. Really helping make this immediate sharing of information available so that, you know, strategic decisions can be made based on the data and the information that this remote workforce has available to them. And so, you know, helping connect those groups is a key piece of, I think, where we see work going in the future. What if some >> of the innovations, because one thing is that we're power uses of G sweet disclosure, we use G sweet, happy customers. The productivity has always been a big one stand up very easily. Don't need it. Get search all this great. All these great features. But as people keep using it, you guys are innovating more. What of the key design and user experience? Innovations to help people remember more productive because no males not going away. You've got good filtering. What if some of the new things >> right, Right. Well, you know, I think I certainly a hot word, right? But that is something where we see, you know, plays a key role in the enterprise. Because what we found through a lot of the user research that my team has done and also just largely in the industry, is that people categorized their work into two things. One is kind of repetitive, mundane work that the things that they have to do but they don't really enjoy and the other would be their core work. That, they see, is their intellectual contribution that builds their profile, builds their reputation, makes the marketable, unemployable and so on. And so if you look at that category of that repetitive work hey, I can play a really amazing role in helping alleviate that mundane, repetitive work. And so, you know, great example of that. A smart compose which hopefully you views on. So what we look at is things like, say, a salutation in an email where you have to think about who are you addressing? How do you want to address some? How do you spell their name? We can alleviate that and make your composition much faster. S o The exciting announcement that we had today was that we are leveraging the Google assistant. So the assistant that you're used to using at home via your home devices are on your phone and we're connecting that to your Google calendar. And so you'LL be able to ask your assistant what you have on your schedule. You know what's ahead of you during your day. Be able to do that on the go. So, you know, I think in general one of the unique opportunities that we have with G suite is not only I, but taking these products that consumers know in love and bringing them into the enterprise. And so we see that that helps people adopted understand the products, but also just brings that like consumer grade simplicity and elegance in the design into the enterprise, which brings joy to the workplace. >> You talk about this kind of new vision of of how you're gonna work. And I I first started. It was introduced with the sweet because of collaboration features. I mean, to this day, if somebody wants to be to edit a document, if it's not in Google docks, I'm going to look at it. >> Not gonna tell >> you I'm not going to do when I got it. You get it? It's just a waste of time. So I want to work faster. Smarter? I want more productive. I wanted to be secure. And the great thing is, these features just show up. Yes. Yeah. You call that smart? Composed. I call it, finish my thought. So. So paint a vision of what that future of work looks like. >> Yeah, well, I mean, certainly we see that work is getting more distributed. Work is getting more mobile. You know, we see more and more that work forces are in many different locations, not just all together in one office. So what excites me about these tools is I really see them in ways that we kind of build relationships amongst colleagues that may not get to spend face to face time together. So whether that's through video conferencing, whether that's through chat, all of these tools play a critical role in really building connective ity and culture of a team so that they can do their best work together. And so I really think of them not just a CZ like productivity tools, but as relationship building tools on DH. So I think the more that the tools can almost just help facilitate humans connecting and communicating. That's when we're really going to elevate the way that people can work together. >> I think cloud is so disrupted. We've been talking all today and yesterday around how the disruptive business miles changed with SAS and Cloud and databases from databases to the front end and one of the things that we've seen over the years. The trends is O Cloud. First Mobile first, first Mobile first and cloud First data first. But one of the things we're seeing is that no one's really cracked the code yet on virtual First, where companies now could be virtual. You don't really need maybe even need an office for me when you say virtual first. That means having an HR app that's designed for remote and distributed work teams. This's becoming a trend. Now we're starting to see some visibility around this new virtual first. >> Yeah, you guys look >> at it that way You guys have any conversation about? Can you share any reaction to that concept of virtual first companies where the processes were tailored for those remote work forces that might gather for meetings physical face to face, but then have to go back and be digital? Yeah, it's on that. >> Uh, Well, yeah. I mean, I think it goes back. Tio, this distributed idea, right? People are working in different places, but I think also different time place an element as well to solve, you know, speak for Google. In particular, we have a global team, right? Which means my team is working on different time zones. It's different, you know, different places as well. So you have to find kind of like you said that virtual way to connect. It's definitely something that we're seeing. I don't know that I have anything specific to comment on it this time, and it's definitely a trend that we're aware of. How >> about you? I designed and user experience what some of the cutting edge techniques that are emerging that you're seeing that's working that you're doubling down on. Can you share some insight into what u ex think customers and users like? >> Sure, Well, I mean, I think one of the big thing is voice input, right? And so you hear a lot about conversational You y is certainly very much an emerging discipline within the field. So, you know, when I started this career path, it was all about pixels on a screen and how you might move and manipulate those pixels and interact with them. But now, with all the voice to text capability, it's really about how can you communicate in an interactive way with digital experience? But you don't necessarily have to use your hands right. You don't necessarily have to have an input device like a mouse or a keyboard, which is a really exciting space, right, because it also opens up a world of, you know, ways that we can bring in more diverse workforce together through assistive technology and accessibility features. Right? So one of the things that I was excited to demonstrate today eyes the transcription capability within a meeting. So using hangouts meet you'LL be able to transcribe the meeting and have that show up on text on the screen, which helps people with varying ways that they might want to engage, be able to engage with the conversation right >> there. Just taking notes >> first is taking the right person. You >> are listening to the whole, you know, recorded video aft. The fact, Yeah, yeah, time consuming. >> Absolutely. You could look at a transcription. So I do think that, like interaction, is going to be less necessarily about using a device that helps you interact and more about using a natural interface like a conversation. >> We had a highlight reel for the meetings. That >> way you get the hard life. That's machine learning could come in. I was asking about the inbox before. What did you learn from that initiative? What do you carrying over what could use his expect? >> Yeah, well, I mean, inbox certainly was a great way for us to experiment and try out different features. There was a lot that we learn from that product. Onda lot of it. We have brought over ways that we kind of come prioritized your messages. Help kind of remind you what to get back Teo and categorize them. And those are all things that we've learned from inbox and we'LL continue to carry for it and it to Gino >> One of things we hear all the time that we've been covering Google clouds. Really, since the beginning, security has always been a big part of it. One things that you guys do that I like is identifying malicious e mails. Right? So talk about how you guys interface because also, you've got a little warning. Gotta warn users. Well, maybe a visual thing as well. But also this tech involved, right? Security's a huge concern for fishing. Spear fishing, Right, So we're talking about that. >> What's fantastic about what we could do a female is like I mentioned this morning. This is a product that, you know, I think over one point five billion people use right, which means that our machine learning on that data is incredibly powerful. And that's how we're able to detect malicious e mails and protect you from them and also warn you. And it's where design plays a role, too, because, like you may have seen it, I know it for myself. I rarely see them, but when I d'Oh, there's a big red banner at the top of the email that warns you that this is an email you should probably be cautious around, right? Eso ITT's were designed plays a role in security. But also our technology really is, you know, kind of far above on. You know what >> you do notice? It's like, Are you sure you want to hit? Send this makes your right. Thank you. Thank >> you. The productivity is is also a double edged sword. You guys have been so good with filtering. I can't use the excuse almost being my spam folder. You guys do a great job of filtering out spam, and it's kind of killing the newsletter business. But there's a lot of stuff that you guys categorize this this kind of again back to the collective intelligence across the billions of signals or users. How do you guys look at that? What's the Can you share some insight on how that works is their secret sauce is there, You know, because you've got spam, you got, you know, not urgent. You got a ways to kind of bring all that out >> Yeah. You know, I'm probably not the best to comment on how that all works, you know, coming from or is it a secret arrest after >> some machine learning? >> So that's an element. But, you know, essentially, what we want to do is make sure that your most important messages are in the foreground. And then you Khun, respond to the other messages when you have the right time and you want to address this thing. So you know, I find for me it's actually useful to go through, and I'm in that mindset like maybe it's a Sunday morning while I'm having my lot go through the newsletters and see the things that I want to catch in Terms of promotions are offers things like that, and I like being able to compartmentalize my time that way. One of >> the nice things that I noticed that you guys a collective intelligence, always a good thing that's where data comes in is that you have these now reminded. Sometimes I see some stuff on my email or says, Hey, you might want to pay attention this evening. >> A little >> kind of pops up the nudge. Is that new? When does that come out. Is that something that's been around >> something that's been out for a bit? I don't remember specifically when we launched it, but it was probably in the last few months, kind of time frame. But yeah, that's another way that we want to make sure that you're not missing important messages. I find it incredibly useful at work because there are those messages that I read, and I think I'm going to respond right away, but something to divert me to something else. And then I pushes down the list, so I find that the accuracy on this is amazing as well. >> About search of discovery I was just one of the benefits of of G Suite is across the board surgeon. Cross correlation. Any innovations there? Any new kind of techniques that you're seeing around search and layout holders is going because anything new there were thinking around that. >> I spoke a bit this morning about clouds search, which is, you know, a product that we launched about two years ago and that really, that enables businesses bring the power of Google search into their business, and it's also a standalone products. So if businesses aren't totally ready to make the move to G suite. They can kind of dip a toe in the water by trying search within their business on DH. Then what was exciting that we announced today is we now allow third party connectivity, so clouds search will not just searched. Your corpus of G sweet data are Google data. It will search all types of data at your company. So you know, including things like cells for us or SAPI data on. So that means that now, for the end user benefit, they can search all of the digital assets at their company and all the people and get those results in one place >> because, I mean, I know I personally creating data faster than I could manage it. So having a powerful search like that, So that sounds like was gonna ask you that sounds like you help how you'LL help use your solve that problem. Yeah, absolutely. So that's a product that I can purchase a standalone you completely standalone. Whatever data I want >> all the data within your business. Yeah, and, you know, based on our research, we find that people spend an inordinate, inordinate amount of time at work, searching for information, right? So we can help cut down that time and help them find the thing that they need That saves people that kind of time at work. >> How do you price it is for users that there's a terabyte or >> I have to get back? >> Don't know. Don't >> know off the top >> of citrus and I'm ready to buy a castle only objective. Come on. Any >> question for you on a CZ you look at the Enterprise is a big enterprise. Focus. What have you learned in dealing with the enterprise? Because great born in the clouds standing up Jeez, we, like we've done ten years ago on then certainly won't get the corporate account been great for our business. But as enterprising had the legacy stuff, whether Microsoft outlook or whatever they have existing stuff that they're used to. What have you learned dealing with the enterprise either? Integration. Sarah experienced What? Can you share any insights to some of those learnings? >> Yeah, absolutely. I mean so one of the things that's tantamount the enterprises interoperability. And so we've been really focused on ensuring that the sweet works well with other products in the enterprise, and I think that is a continuing trend way. See more and more when we speak with our customers. They're not looking for a one size fits all solution for all of their software needs. They understand now that really employees have a lot more control and influence on the tools that they want to use on DH. That's where you really looking at. You know, an employee will try to seek out the tool that they think is the best user experience, and that's what they want to use in the work place. And so that means the employer, the enterprise has to be much more nimble about how they might put a complimentary group of tools together. Eh? So we've been very, very focused on ensuring that our products work well with other products, including Microsoft, but including, you know, other video conferencing solutions, hardware solutions and so on. >> Security. Something neat. Thanks so much for sharing the inside. The update on G Suite. Final question for him. Curious because you're going unique position. Vice president of U Ex share what your job is. What do you do on a day to day basis? There's through the day in the life for a year in the life. What do you work on? What's in the projects? What do your objective? What do you do for your job? Specifically? Were the key things? >> Yeah. I mean, the best part of my job is I get to be, you know, really close with our customers and users. And I see my job is kind of like cheap chief. Empathize, er right. And so really understanding the human need behind you know, users and what they need to accomplish. And I spoke today about one of the most rewarding aspects is helping people accomplish their most important goals. And that could be in their personal life. It could be for education on it could be in the workplace is well, too. And so for us, like my team does a lot of user research and design to understand. What are those big bulls that people have? What is the friction that they have in accomplishing those goals? And then how can our tools solve those problems for them and make a frictionless experience that brings delight and helps him accomplish great things? >> You're like a life coaching a psychologist, same time. Our next two guests is Mike Bundy, senior director of Global Cisco Lines with pure storage and Z, who's in charge of Christ Francisco. Welcome to the Cube. Thanks for joining >> us. Thank you for having us here. >> Also one, but we're in the definite zone. It's packed with people learning really use cases. Get rolling up the sleeves. Talk about the Cisco pure relationship. How do you guys fit into all this? What's the alliance? >> You understand? >> Sure. So we have a partnership with Cisco, primarily around a solution called flashback in the Converse infrastructure space. And most recently, we've evolved a new use case, an application together for our official intelligence that Z's business unit have just released a new platform that works with Cisco and in video to accomplish. You know, customer application needs mainly in machine learning, but but all aspects of our official intel it >> Hey, Eyes, obviously hot trend in machine learning. But today it's Cisco. The big story was, it's not about the data center as much anymore is. It's the data at the center of the value proposition, which spans the on premises I ot edge and multiple clouds. So data now is every where you gonna store it? So it's going to start in. The cloud is on premises. Data at the center means a lot of things you can programme with its gotta be addressable and has be smart and aware and take advantage of networking. So, with all that is a background backdrop, what is the A I approach? How should people think about a I in context to storing data using data, not just moving package from point A to point B? But you're storing it? You're pulling it out. You're in agreeing into apple cases. A lot of moving parts there. What's that? >> Yeah, you got a really good point here. When people think about machine learning traditional age, they just think about training. But we look at this more than Chinese. The whole did a pipeline that starts with collecting the data stored the data, analyze the data between the data and didn't deploy it and then for the data back. So it's really a vory. It's a cycle there, right? It's it's where you need to consider >> how you actually collect the data from the edge, how you store them in the speed that you can and give the data to the training side. So I believe way work was pure. We try to create this as a whole data pipeline and thinking about entire data movement and the star, which need that would look here. >> So we're in the definite zone, and I'm looking at the machine learning with Python ML library >> center >> Flow of Apache sparked a >> lot of this data >> science type stuff, but increasingly a ISA workload that's going mainstream. But what The trends that you guys are seeing in terms of, you know, traditional, I tease involvement is >> it's still sort of >> a I often an island. What are you seeing there? So I'll take a take a gas stab at it. So, really, every major company industry that we work with have you know, Aye, aye. Initiatives. It's the core of the future for their business. So, no, what we're trying to do is partner with I t to get ahead of the large infrastructure demands that will come from those smaller, innovative projects that Aeryn pilot mode so that they are a partner to the business and the data scientist, rather than, you know, a laggard in the business. The way that you know, sometimes there the reputation that that I guess we want to be the infrastructure solid, you know, like a cloud like experience for the data scientists. So they can worry more about the applications, the data, what it means the business and less about the infrastructure. Okay. And so you guys are trying to simplify that >> infrastructure, whether it's converged infrastructure. No other sort of unifying approaches is Are you seeing the shift of a sort of that heavy lifting of people out now? Shifting resource is, too. You work loads like a I Maybe you could discuss trends, are there? >> Yeah, absolutely. So I think I started was more like a data signs experiment. Right? You see, want to date, assigns a couple of data science experiment. Now it's really getting into ministry. More and more people report into that and us. Apologize. Mike, Mike, The way we start that questions my deep apology. I need a GP or something. >> Like, I need to >> store the data better. >> Your fortnight? Yes. >> So as Micah's had early on, right? It's it's not just the data scientist is actually all a challenge as well. And I think was Cisco, where twenty do was pure. Here is, you know, that Cisco thing. We're saying we're breach right. We want to bridge the gap between the data scientists and the it and make it not just as experiments, but a scale at production level and be wedded to actually, Crew will impact with the technology infrastructure that we can table >> might talk about yours position You guys have announced here in the cloud. Yes, he's seeing that software. Focus software is the key here. Or you can get to a software model. Aye, aye. And she learned Only we're talking about is software data is now available to be addressed and managing that software. Lifecycle. How is this Corolla software for you guys? With converge infrastructure at the San Francisco announce your downstage day, we'll converge infrastructure to the edge. >> Yeah, so if you look at the plant, one that we built, that's it's referenced by being called the data hub. The data hub has a very tight synergy, with all the applications referring to spark tenser PLO, etcetera, etcetera cafe. So we look it as the next generation analytics, and the platform has a super layer on top of all those applications because that that's going to really make the integration possible for the data scientists. They could go quicker and faster. What we're trying to do underneath that is used the data hub that no matter what the size, whether it's small data, large data transaction based or more bulk data warehouse type applications, you know the data hub in the flash blade solution or need handle all of that very, very different and probably more optimizing and easier than traditional legacy infrastructures, even tradition, even even even flash, you know, from some of our competitors. Because, you know, we've built this a purpose built application for that, you know, not trying to go backwards in terms of technology, >> I want to put both you guys on the spot for a question. We hear infrastructure is code for going on many, many years since the few started at nine years ago. Infrastructures code. Now it's here. The network's programmable infrastructures, programmable storages, programmable What a customer! Or someone asked you. How is infrastructure Network's in storage, Programmable. And what do I do? I'm used to provisional storage. I've got servers. I'm going cloud. What do I do? How do I become? A. I enabled that I could program the infrastructure. How do you guys answer that question? >> So a lot of that comes to the infrastructure management layer, right? How do you actually using policy and using the white infrastructure managing to make the right configuration want? And I think one thing from program eligibility is also flexibility. Instead of having just a fixed conflagration. What we're doing with pure here is really having that flexibility right where you can put pure Star Ridge different kind of star, which was different, kind off. Compute that you have. No matter. It's we're talking about two are used for you. That kind of computing power is different and connects with a different Star wars, depending on what the customer use cases. So that flexibility driven by the driven to the proper program ability that is managed by the infrastructure. Imagine a layer, and we're extending that So pure and Cisco's infrastructure management actually tying together it's really single pane of glass was in decide that we can actually manage both pure and Cisco. That's the program ability that we're talking >> about. Get pure storage and to end manageability. >> Where's the Cisco compute its A single pane of glass. >> So what do I buy? I want to get started. What? What do you got for me? What you have, it's pretty simple. Three basic components, you know, Cisco Compute and a platform for machine learning that's powered by and video GP. Use Cisco Flash Blade, which is the data hub and storage component and then network connectivity from the number one network provider in the world. Francisco. Very simple. It's askew. It's a solution. It's very, very skewed. It's very simple. It's data driven, so you know it's not tied to a specific skew. It's more flexible than that. So you have a better optimization of the network. You know you don't buy a one thousand Siri's ex. Okay, Only used fifty percent of it. It's very customized. Okay, so I can customize it for my whatever data science team or my workloads and provisioning for multipurpose. Same way of service provider would ifyou're a large organization >> trend trend around Breaking Silas has been being discussed heavily. Talk about multiple clouds on premise and cloud and edge all coming together. How should companies think about their data architecture on? Because Silas Air good for certain things to make multi cloud work and all this and to end and intent based networking and all the power of a eyes around the corner. You gotta have the date out there, right? It's gotta be horizontally scaleable of you. How do you break down those silos? Twitter advises air use cases or anarchic for architecture. >> You know what I think? It's a classic example of how it has evolved to not think just silos and be multi cloud. So you know, we've advocate is is you have a date, a platform that transpires the entire community, whether its development, test engineering production applications and that, you know, runs holistically across the entire organization that would include on from it would include integration with the cloud. Because most you know cos now require, That s so you could have different levels of high availability or lower cost if your data needs to be archived. So it's really, you know, building and thinking about The data is on platform across the across the company and not just you know, silos for >> replication never goes away. Never. It's gonna be around for a long, long time. >> Deaf tests never goes away. Yeah, >> you thought some >> s o i. D On top of that, We believe where you infrastructure should go is where the data goes, right? You want to follow that where the data is, And that's exactly why I want a partner was pure here because we see a lot of the data sitting today in the very important infrastructure which is built by pure storage and want to make sure that we're not just building a sidle box sitting there where you have for the data in there all the time, but actually connected our chips. Silver was pure storage in the most manageable way. And it's the same kind of manager layer you're not thinking about All have to manage all the Sala box or the shadow it that some day that time would have under their desks. Right. That's the least thing you want it. >> And the other thing that came up in the Kino today, which we've been seeing on the Cuban, all the experts reaffirm, is moving data cost money got late in sea. Costs also just cost to move traffic around, so moving compute to the edge of moving. Compute to the data has been a big hot trend. How is the computer equation changed? I got storage. I'm moving. I'm not just moving packets around. I'm storing it and moving it around. How does that changed the computers? It put more emphasis on the computer. >> Wait, It's definitely putting a lot more emphasis on computer. I think it's where you want to compute to happen, right? You can pull all the data and I want it happen in the centre place. That's fine if that's the way you want to manage it. If you have, if you have already simplify the data, you want to put it in that way. If you want to do it at the edge near where the data sources, you can also do the cleaning there. So we want to make sure that no matter how you want to manage it. We have the portfolio that can actually help you to manage. And >> his alternative alternate processors mentioned video first. Yeah, you would deal with them in other ways to you've got to take advantage of technologies like uber, Nettie says. Example. So you can move the containers where they need to be and have policy managers for the computer requirements. And also, you know, storage so you don't have contention or data and integrity issues. So embracing those technologies and a multi cloud world, it's very, very >> like. I want to ask you a question around customer trends. What are you seeing as a pattern from a customer standpoint as they prepare for a I and start re factory? Some of their end or resource is. Is there a certain use case that they set up with pure in terms of how they set up their storage? Is it different by customers? Are a common trend that you see >> there are some commonalities, you know, like take financial services want trading as an example. We have a number of customers that leverage our platform for that. Is this very you know, time sensitive, high availability data? So really, I think the customers the trend over all of that would be a step back. Take a look at your data and focus on how can I correlate, Organize that and really get it ready so that whatever platform used from a story standpoint, you're you're thinking about all aspects of data and get it in a format in a forum where you can manage and catalog, because that's kind of the sentence. >> I mean, it really highlights all the key things that would say it in storage for a long time. I availability integrity of the data. And now you got at patient developers programming with data. This's a hole with a P IIs. Now you're slinging FBI's around like it's Tom mentioned me its weight should be. This is like Nirvana finally got here. How far along are we in the progress? How far we earlier we moving the needle? Where the >> customers himself a partnership partnership. Deanna >> and General, You guys were going to say, You got you got storage, You got networking and compute all kind of working together. That's reflex school elastic like the cloud >> I my feeling, mike, contract me or you can disagree with me. I think right now, if we look at all the wood analysts saying what we're saying, I think most of the companies more than fifty percent of companies either have deployed a Emma or are considering implant off deploying that right. But having said that, we do see that we're seeing at a relatively early stage because the challenges off making a deployment at scale where data scientist and I'd really working together, right? You need that level of security in that level, off skill ofthe infrastructure and software involving Devon I. So my feeling is where stew At a relatively early stage, >> I think we are in the early adopter face. You know, we've had customers for last two years. They've really been driving this way, worked with about seven of the automated car, you know, driving Cos. But, you know, if you look at the data from Morgan Stanley and other analysts, is about a thirteen billion dollars infrastructure that's required for a eye over the next three years from twenty, nineteen, twenty, twenty one. So you know, that is probably six x seven x what it is today, so we haven't quite hit that. >> So people are doing their homework right now. You are the leader. >> Its leaders in the industry, not mastering everybody else is going to close that gap. So that's where you guys come into helping that scale way built this. This platform with Cisco on is really flashback for a I is around scale for, you know, tens and twenties of petabytes of data that will be required for >> these targeted solution for a I with all the integration pieces Francisco built in. Everyone live here in Silicon valley in San Jose. This is a dupe summit. This is Silicon angle and Wiki bonds. The cube is our flagship program. We go out to the events and extract the signal to noise. I'm John barrier, the founder SiliconANGLE joins my cohost, Jeff Kelly, top big data analyst in the, in the community. Our next guest, Jack Norris, COO of map R security enterprise. That's the buzz of the show and it was the buzz of OpenStack summit. Another open source show. And here this year, you're just seeing move after, move at the moon, talking about a couple of critical issues. Enterprise grade Hadoop, Hortonworks announced a big acquisition when all in, as they said, and now cloud era follows suit with their news. Today, I, you sitting back saying, they're catching up to you guys. I mean, how do you look at that? I mean, cause you guys have that's the security stuff nailed down. So what Dan, >>You feel about that now? I think I'm, if you look at the kind of Hadoop market, it's definitely moving from a test experimental phase into a production phase. We've got tremendous customers across verticals that are doing some really interesting production use cases. And we recognized very early on that to really meet the needs of customers required some architectural innovation. So combining the open source ecosystem packages with some innovations underneath to really deliver high availability, data protection, disaster recovery features, security is part of that. But if you can't predict the PR protect the data, if you can't have multitenancy and separate workflows across the cluster, then it doesn't matter how secure it is. You know, you need those. >>I got to ask you a direct question since we're here at Hadoop summit, because we get this question all the time. Silicon lucky bond is so successful, but I just don't understand your business model without plates were free content and they have some underwriters. So you guys have been very successful yet. People aren't looking at map are as good at the quiet leader, like you doing your business, you're making money. Jeff. He had some numbers with us that in the Hindu community, about 20% are paying subscriptions. That's unlike your business model. So explain to the folks out there, the business model and specifically the traction because you have >>Customers. Yeah. Oh no, we've got, we've got over 500 paying customers. We've got at least $1 million customer in seven different verticals. So we've got breadth and depth and our business model is simple. We're an enterprise software company. That's looking at how to provide the best of open source as well as innovations underneath >>The most open distribution of Hadoop. But you add that value separately to that, right? So you're, it's not so much that you're proprietary at all. Right. Okay. >>You clarify that. Right. So if you look at, at this exciting ecosystem, Hadoop is fairly early in its life cycle. If it's a commoditization phase like Linux or, or relational database with my SQL open source, kind of equates the whole technology here at the beginning of this life cycle, early stages of the life cycle. There's some architectural innovations that are really required. If you look at Hadoop, it's an append only file system relying on Linux. And that really limits the types of operations. That types of use cases that you can do. What map ours done is provide some deep architectural innovations, provide complete read-write file systems to integrate data protection with snapshots and mirroring, et cetera. So there's a whole host of capabilities that make it easy to integrate enterprise secure and, and scale much better. Do you think, >>I feel like you were maybe a little early to the market in the sense that we heard Merv Adrian and his keynote this morning. Talk about, you know, it's about 10 years when you start to get these questions about security and governance and we're about nine years into Hadoop. Do you feel like maybe you guys were a little early and now you're at a tipping point, whereas these more, as more and more deployments get ready to go to production, this is going to be an area that's going to become increasingly important. >>I think, I think our timing has been spectacular because we, we kind of came out at a time when there was some customers that were really serious about Hadoop. We were able to work closely with them and prove our technology. And now as the market is just ramping, we're here with all of those features that they need. And what's a, what's an issue. Is that an incremental improvement to provide those kind of key features is not really possible if the underlying architecture isn't there and it's hard to provide, you know, online real-time capabilities in a underlying platform that's append only. So the, the HDFS layer written in Java, relying on the Linux file system is kind of the, the weak underbelly, if you will, of, of the ecosystem. There's a lot of, a lot of important developments happening yarn on top of it, a lot of really kind of exciting things. So we're actively participating in including Apache drill and on top of a complete read-write file system and integrated Hindu database. It just makes it all come to life. >>Yeah. I mean, those things on top are critical, but you know, it's, it's the underlying infrastructure that, you know, we asked, we keep on community about that. And what's the, what are the things that are really holding you back from Paducah and production and the, and the biggest challenge is they cited worth high availability, backup, and recovery and maintaining performance at scale. Those are the top three and that's kind of where Matt BARR has been focused, you know, since day one. >>So if you look at a major retailer, 2000 nodes and map bar 50 unique applications running on a single cluster on 10,000 jobs a day running on top of that, if you look at the Rubicon project, they recently went public a hundred million add actions, a hundred billion ad auctions a day. And on top of that platform, beats music that just got acquired for $3 billion. Basically it's the underlying map, our engine that allowed them to scale and personalize that music service. So there's a, there's a lot of proof points in terms of how quickly we scale the enterprise grade features that we provide and kind of the blending of deep predictive analytics in a batch environment with online capabilities. >>So I got to ask you about your go to market. I'll see Cloudera and Hortonworks have different business models. Just talk about that, but Cloudera got the massive funding. So you get this question all the time. What do you, how do you counter that army and the arms race? I think >>I just wrote an article in Forbes and he says cash is not a strategy. And I think that was, that was an excellent, excellent article. And he goes in and, you know, in this fast growing market, you know, an amount of money isn't necessarily translate to architectural innovations or speeding the development of that. This is a fairly fragmented ecosystem in terms of the stack that runs on top of it. There's no single application or single vendor that kind of drives value. So an acquisition strategy is >>So your field Salesforce has direct or indirect, both mixable. How do you handle the, because Cloudera has got feet on the street and every squirrel will find it, not if they're parked there, parking sales reps and SCS and all the enterprise accounts, you know, they're going to get the, squirrel's going to find a nut once in awhile. Yeah. And they're going to actually try to engage the clients. So, you know, I guess it is a strategy if they're deploying sales and marketing, right? So >>The beauty about that, and in fact, we're all in this together in terms of sharing an API and driving an ecosystem, it's not a fragmented market. You can start with one distribution and move to another, without recompiling or without doing any sort of changes. So it's a fairly open community. If this were a vendor lock-in or, you know, then spending money on brand, et cetera, would, would be important. Our focus is on the, so the sales execution of direct sales, yes, we have direct sales. We also have partners and it depends on the geographies as to what that percentage is. >>And John Schroeder on with the HP at fifth big data NYC has updated the HP relationship. >>Oh, excellent. In fact, we just launched our application gallery app gallery, make it very easy for administrators and developers and analysts to get access and understand what's available in the ecosystem. That's available directly on our website. And one of the featured applications there today is an integration with the map, our sandbox and HP Vertica. So you can get early access, try it and get the best of kind of enterprise grade SQL first, >>First Hadoop app store, basically. Yeah. If you want to call it that way. Right. So like >>Sure. Available, we launched with close to 30, 30 with, you know, a whole wave kind of following that. >>So talk a little bit about, you know, speaking of verdict and kind of the sequel on Hadoop. So, you know, there's a lot of talk about that. Some confusion about the different methods for applying SQL on predicts or map art takes an open approach. I know you'll support things like Impala from, from a competitor Cloudera, talk about that approach from a map arts perspective. >>So I guess our, our, our perspective is kind of unbiased open source. We don't try to pick and choose and dictate what's the right open source based on either our participation or some community involvement. And the reality is with multiple applications being run on the platform, there are different use cases that make difference, you know, make different sense. So whether it's a hive solution or, you know, drill drills available, or HP Vertica people have the choice. And it's part of, of a broad range of capabilities that you want to be able to run on the platform for your workflows, whether it's SQL access or a MapReduce or a spark framework shark, et cetera. >>So, yeah, I mean there is because there's so many different there's spark there's, you know, you can run HP Vertica, you've got Impala, you've got hive. And the stinger initiative is, is that whole kind of SQL on Hadoop ecosystem, still working itself out. Are we going to have this many options in a year or two years from now? Or are they complimentary and potentially, you know, each has its has its role. >>I think the major differences is kind of how it deals with the new data formats. Can it deal with self-describing data? Sources can leverage, Jason file does require a centralized metadata, and those are some of the perspectives and advantages say the Apache drill has to expand the data sets that are possible enabled data exploration without dependency on a, on an it administrator to define that, that metadata. >>So another, maybe not always as exciting, but taking workloads from existing systems, moving them to Hadoop is one of the ways that a lot of people get started with, to do whether associated transformation workloads or there's something in that vein. So I know you've announced a partnership with Syncsort and that's one of the things that they focus on is really making it as easy as possible to meet those. We'll talk a little bit about that partnership, why that makes sense for you and, and >>When your customer, I think it's a great proof point because we announced that partnership around mainframe offload, we have flipped comScore and experience in that, in that press release. And if you look at a workload on a mainframe going to duke, that that seems like that's a, that's really an oxymoron, but by having the capabilities that map R has and making that a system of record with that full high availability and that data protection, we're actually an option to offload from mainframe offload, from sand processing and provide a really cost effective, scalable alternative. And we've got customers that had, had tried to offload from the mainframe multiple times in the past, on successfully and have done it successfully with Mapbox. >>So talk a little bit more about kind of the broader partnership strategy. I mean, we're, we're here at Hadoop summit. Of course, Hortonworks talks a lot about their partnerships and kind of their reseller arrangements. Fedor. I seem to take a little bit more of a direct approach what's map R's approach to kind of partnering and, and as that relates to kind of resell arrangements and things like, >>I think the app gallery is probably a great proof point there. The strategy is, is an ecosystem approach. It's having a collection of tools and applications and management facilities as well as applications on top. So it's a very open strategy. We focus on making sure that we have open API APIs at that application layer, that it's very easy to get data in and out. And part of that architecture by presenting standard file system format, by allowing non Java applications to run directly on our platform to support standard database connections, ODBC, and JDBC, to provide database functionality. In addition to kind of this deep predictive analytics really it's about supporting the broadest set of applications on top of a single platform. What we're seeing in this kind of this, this modern architecture is data gravity matters. And the more processing you can do on a single platform, the better off you are, the more agile, the more competitive, right? >>So in terms of, so you're partnering with people like SAS, for example, to kind of bring some of the, some of the analytic capabilities into the platform. Can you kind of tell us a little bit about any >>Companies like SAS and revolution analytics and Skytree, and I mean, just a whole host of, of companies on the analytics side, as well as on the tools and visualization, et cetera. Yeah. >>Well, I mean, I, I bring up SAS because I think they, they get the fact that the, the whole data gravity situation is they've got it. They've got to go to where the data is and not have the data come to them. So, you know, I give them credit for kind of acknowledging that, that kind of big data truth ism, that it's >>All going to the data, not bringing the data >>To the computer. Jack talk about the success you had with the customers had some pretty impressive numbers talking about 500 customers, Merv agent. The garden was on with us earlier, essentially reiterating not mentioning that bar. He was just saying what you guys are doing is right where the puck is going. And some think the puck is not even there at the same rink, some other vendors. So I gotta give you props on that. So what I want you to talk about the success you have in specifically around where you're winning and where you're successful, you guys have struggled with, >>I need to improve on, yeah, there's a, there's a whole class of applications that I think Hadoop is enabling, which is about operations in analytics. It's taking this, this higher arrival rate machine generated data and doing analytics as it happens and then impacting the business. So whether it's fraud detection or recommendation engines, or, you know, supply chain applications using sensor data, it's happening very, very quickly. So a system that can tolerate and accept streaming data sources, it has real-time operations. That is 24 by seven and highly available is, is what really moves the needle. And that's the examples I used with, you know, add a Rubicon project and, you know, cable TV, >>The very outcome. What's the primary outcomes your clients want with your product? Is it stability? And the platform has enabled development. Is there a specific, is there an outcome that's consistent across all your wins? >>Well, the big picture, some of them are focused on revenues. Like how do we optimize revenue either? It's a new data source or it's a new application or it's existing application. We're exploding the dataset. Some of it's reducing costs. So they want to do things like a mainframe offload or data warehouse offload. And then there's some that are focused on risk mitigation. And if there's anything that they have in common it's, as they moved from kind of test and looked at production, it's the key capabilities that they have in enterprise systems today that they want to make sure they're in Hindu. So it's not, it's not anything new. It's just like, Hey, we've got SLS and I've got data protection policies, and I've got a disaster recovery procedure. And why can't I expect the same level of capabilities in Hindu that I have today in those other systems. >>It's a final question. Where are you guys heading this year? What's your key objectives. Obviously, you're getting these announcements as flurry of announcements, good success state of the company. How many employees were you guys at? Give us a quick update on the numbers. >>So, you know, we just reported this incredible momentum where we've tripled core growth year over year, we've added a tremendous amount of customers. We're over 500 now. So we're basically sticking to our knitting, focusing on the customers, elevating the proof points here. Some of the most significant customers we have in the telco and financial services and healthcare and, and retail area are, you know, view this as a strategic weapon view, this is a huge competitive advantage, and it's helping them impact their business. That's really spring our success. We've, you know, we're, we're growing at an incredible clip here and it's just, it's a great time to have made those calls and those investments early on and kind of reaping the benefits. >>It's. Now I've always said, when we, since the first Hadoop summit, when Hortonworks came out of Yahoo and this whole community kind of burst open, you had to duke world. Now Riley runs at it's a whole different vibe of itself. This was look at the developer vibe. So I got to ask you, and we would have been a big fan. I mean, everyone has enough beachhead to be successful, not about map arbors Hortonworks or cloud air. And this is why I always kind of smile when everyone goes, oh, Cloudera or Hortonworks. I mean, they're two different animals at this point. It would do different things. If you guys were over here, everyone has their quote, swim lanes or beachhead is not a lot of super competition. Do you think, or is it going to be this way for awhile? What's your fork at some? At what point do you see more competition? 10 years out? I mean, Merv was talking a 10 year horizon for innovation. >>I think that the more people learn and understand about Hadoop, the more they'll appreciate these kind of set of capabilities that matter in production and post-production, and it'll migrate earlier. And as we, you know, focus on more developer tools like our sandbox, so people can easily get experienced and understand kind of what map are, is. I think we'll start to see a lot more understanding and momentum. >>Awesome.
