We've been here all day yesterday, and today and tomorrow I'm talking with lots of guests, really uncovering what's going on in the world of Kubernetes. Lisa Martin, here with Dave Nicholson. We've got some folks. Next we're going to be talking about a customer use case, which is always one of my favorite things to talk about. Please welcome Micah Coletti, the principal platform engineer at CHG healthcare, and Venkat Ramakrishnan VP of products from Portworx by Pure Storage, guys welcome to the program. >> Thank you. >> Happy to be here. >> Yeah. So Micah, first of all, let's go ahead and start with you. Give the audience an overview of CHG healthcare. >> Yeah. So CHG healthcare, we're a staffing company. So we try like a little companion. So our clients are doctors and hospitals, so we help staff hospitals with temporary doctors or even permanent placing. So we deal with a lot of doctors, a lot of nursing and we're a combination of multiple companies. So CHG is the parent. So, and yeah, we're known in the industry as one of the leaders in this field and providing hospitals with high quality doctors and nurses. And, you know, our customer service is like number one, and one of the things our CEO is really focused on is now how do we make that more digital? How do we provide that same level of quality of service, but a digital experience as rich for her. >> I can imagine it was a massive need for that in the last 18 months alone. >> COVID definitely really raised that awareness up for us and the importance of that digital experience and that we need to be out there in the digital market. >> Absolutely. So you're a customer port works by pure storage, we're going to get into that, but then Venkat talk to us about what's going on, the acquisition of port works by pure storage was about a year ago. Talk to us about your VP of products what's going on. >> Yeah, I mean, you know, first of all, I think I could not say how much of a great fit for a Portworx will be part of pure storage, it's, pure itself is a very fast moving, large startup that's a dominant leader in the flash and data center space, and, you know, pure recognizes the fact that Kubernetes is the new operating system of the cloud is not how, you know, it's kind of virtualizing the cloud itself, and there's a, you know, a big burgeoning need for data management and Kubernetes and how you can kind of orchestrate workloads between your on-prem data centers and the cloud and back. So Portworx fits right into the story as complete vision of data management for our customers, and it's been phenomenal. Our business has grown as part of being part of a pure, and you know, we're looking at launching some new products as well, and it's all exciting times. >> So you must've been pretty delighted to be acquired as a startup by essentially a startup because, because although pure has reached significant milestones in the storage business and is a leader in flash storage still that that startup mindset is absolutely unique. That's not, that's not the same as being acquired by a company that's been around for a hundred years seeking to revitalize itself. >> Absolutely. >> Can you talk a little bit about that aspect? >> Yeah, So I think, you know, purist culture is a highly innovation-driven and it's a very open, flat culture, right? I mean, it's, everybody in pure is accessible. It can easily have a composition with folks and everybody has his learning mindset and Portworx is and has always been the same way. Right? So when you put these teams together, if we can create wonders, I mean, we right after the acquisition, just within a few months, we announced an integrated solution that portworx orchestrates volumes and file shares in pure splash products and then delivers as an integrated solution for our customers, and pure has a phenomenal cloud-based monitoring and management system called pure one that we integrated well into. Now, we're bringing the power of all of the observability that pure's customers are used to for all of the corporate customers, and I've been super happy, you know, delegating that capability to our customers and our customers are delighted. Now they can have a complete view all the way from Kubernetes app to the flash. and I don't think any one company in the planet can even plan they can do that. >> I think it's fair to acknowledge that pure one was observability before observability was a word that everyone used regularly. >> Yep. >> Sounds very interesting. >> Micah Talk to us about, obviously you are a customer. CHG is a customer of Portworx now Portworx by Pure Storage. Talk to us about the use case. What, what was the compellent? Was there a compelling event and from a storage perspective that led you to Portworx in the first place. >> So we beat, they began this, our CEO base came to the vision, we need to have a digital presence we need enhances. and this was even before COVID. So they brought me on board and my, my manager read glossary. We basically had this task to, how are we going to get out into the cloud? How are we going to make that happen? And we chose to follow a very much a cloud native strategy and the platform of choice, I mean, it just made sense with Kubernetes. And so when we were looking at Kubernetes, we were starting to figure out how we're doing. We knew that data is going to be a big factor. You know, being a, provide data. We're very much focused on an event driven. We're really pushing to event driven architecture. So we leverage Kafka on top of Kubernetes, but at the time we were actually leveraging Kafka with a MSK down, out in AWS, and that was just a huge cost to us. So I came on board, I had experienced with Portworx, a prior company before that, and I basically said, we need to figure out a great storage relay overlay. and the only way to do is we got to have high performance storage, we've got to have secure. We got to be able to backup and recover that storage. And the Portworx was the right match. And that allowed us to have a very smooth transition off of MSK onto Kubernetes saving us a significant amount of money per month, and just leverage that already existing hardware that our existing compute memory and just, and the, and move right to Portworx. >> Leveraging your existing investments. >> Exactly. >> Which is key, >> Very key, very key so. >> So how common are the challenges that when you guys came together with CHG, how common are the challenges? >> It's actually a, that's a great question. You know, this is, you know, I'll tell you the challenges that Micah and his team are running into is what we see a lot in the industry where people pay a ton of money, you know to other vendors are, you know, especially in some cases use some cloud native services, but they want to have control over the data. They want to control the cost and they want higher performance and they want to have, you know, there's also governance and regulatory things that they need to control better. So they want to kind of bring these services and have more control over them. Right? So now we will work very well with all of our partners, including the cloud providers, as well as, you know, on-prem and server vendors and everybody, but different customers have different kinds of needs. And Portworx gives them that flexibility. If you are a customer who want, you know, have a lot of control over your applications, the performance, the latency, and want to control costs very well and leverage your existing investments Portworx can deliver that for you in your data center. Right now, you can integrate that with pure slash and you get a complete solution, or you want to run it in cloud, and you still want to have leverage the agility of the cloud and scale Portworx delivers a solution for you as well. So it kind of not only protects their investment its future proves their architecture, you get future proving your architecture completely. So if you want to tear the cloud or burst the cloud, you have a great solution that you can continue to leverage >> Micah, when you hear future-proof and I'm a marketer. So I always go, I love to know what it means to different people. What does that mean to you in your environment? >> My environment. So a future-proof means like one of the things we've been addressing lately, that's just a real big challenge. And I'm sure it's a challenge in the industry, especially the Q and A's is upgrading our clusters. The ability to actually maintain a consistent flow with how fast Kubernetes is growing, you know, they're, they they're out. I think he cast, we leverage the cast. So it's like 121 or 122 now, and that effort to upgrade a cluster, it can be a daunting one. With Portworx, we actually were able to make that to where we could actually spin up a brand new cluster. And with Portworx shift, all our applications, services, data migrated completely over, Portworx handles all of that for us and stand up that new cluster in, in less than a day. And that effort, I mean, it would take us a week, two weeks to do so, not even man hours and time spent there, but just the reliability of being able to do that in the cost, you know, instead of standing up a new cluster and configuring it and doing all that and spending all that time, we can just really, we move to what we call blue green cut-over strategy. And Portworx is an essential piece of that. >> So Venkat, is it fair to say that there are a variety of ways that people approach Portworx from a value perspective in terms of, I know that one area that you are particularly good in is the area of backups in this environment, but then you get data management and there's a third kind of vector there. What is the third vector? >> As all of the data services, >> Data services, >> Yeah Like for example, deep database as a service on any Kubernetes cluster feed on your cloud or your on-prem data centers. >> Which data, what kind of databases are you talking about? >> I mean we're talking about anything from Reddit Kafka, Post-stress my sequel console, we are supporting. We just announced something called a Portworx Data Services Offering that essentially delivers all these databases as a service on any Kubernetes cluster that a customer can point to and lets them kind of get the automated management of the database from day one to day three, the entire life cycle, you know, through regular Kubernetes, scoop cuddle experience through APIs and SDKs and a nice slick UI that they can, you know, that's, role-based access control and all of that, that they can completely control their data and their applications through it. And you know, that's the third vector of Portworx office. >> Micah a question for you. So Portworx has been a part of pure storage? You've known it since obviously for several years before you were at CHG, you brought it to CHG. You now know it a year into being acquired by a fast paced startup. Talk to me about the relationship and some of the benefits that you're getting with Portworx as a part of pure storage? >> Well, I mean, one of the things I, you know, when I heard about the acquisition, my first thing was, I was a little bit concerned is that relationship going to change? And when we were acquiring, when we were looking at adopting Portworx, one thing I would tell my management is Portworx is not just a vendor that wants to throw a solution on you and provide some capability. They're a partner. They want to partner with you and your success in your journey and this whole cloud native journey to provide this rich digital experience in the, for not only our platform engineering team, but our Dev teams, but also be able to really accelerate the development of our services. So we can provide that digital portal for our end users. And that didn't change. If anything, that it accelerated that relationship did not change. You know, I came to Venkat with an issue. We just we're, we're dealing with, he immediately got someone on a phone call with me. And so that has not changed. So it's really exciting to see that now that they've been acquired, that they still are very much invested in the success of their customers and making sure we're successful. You know, it's not all of a sudden. I was worried I was going to have to do a whole different support PA process, and it was going to go into a black hole. Didn't happen. They still are very much involved with their customers. >> It's sounds kind of Venkat similar to what you talked about with the cultural alignment. I've known here for a long time and they're very customer centric sounds like one of the areas in which there was a very strong alignment with Portworx >> Absolutely. and Portworx has always taken pride in being customer first company. Our founders are heavily customer focused. You know, they are aligned. They want, they have always aligned. our portraits business to our customers' needs. Now Pure is a company that's maniacally focused on customers, right? I mean, that's all in a pure pounder cars and everybody cared about. And so, you know, bringing these companies together and being part of the Pure team, I kind of see how, how synergistic it is. And, you know, we have, you know, that has enabled us to serve our customer's customers even better than before. >> So I'm curious about the two of you personally, in terms of your, your histories, I'm going to assume that you didn't both just bounce out of high school into the world of Kubernetes, right? So like Lisa and I you're spanning the generations between the world of say virtualization based on x86 architecture, virtualization, where you're not, you don't have microservices, you have a full blown operating system that you're working with. Kind of talk about, you know, Micah with you first talk about what that's been like navigating that change. We were in the midst of that. Do you have advice for others that are navigating that change? >> Don't be afraid of it. You know, a lot of people want to, you know, I call it we're moving from where we're name me. We still have cats and dogs. They have a name that the VMs either whether or not they're physical boxes or their VMs to where it's more like, he'd say cattle, you know, it's like we don't own the OOS and not to be afraid of afraid of that, because change is really good. You know, the ability for me to not have to worry about patching and operating system, it's huge, you know, where I can rely on someone like EKS and, and the version and allow them to, if a CV comes out, they let me know. I go and I use their tools to be able to upgrade. So I don't have to literally worry about owning that OOS and containers as the same thing. You know, you, you know, it's all about being fault-tolerant right. And being able to be changed or where, you know, you can actually roll out a new version of a container, a base image with a lot of ease without having to go and patch a bunch of servers. I mean, patch night was hell and sorry if I could say that, but it was a nightmare, you know, but this whole world has just been a game changer with that. >> So Venkat from your perspective, you were coming at it, going into a startup, looking at the landscape in the future and seeing opportunity. What what's that been like for you? I guess the question for you is more something, Lisa and I talk about this concept of peak Kubernetes, where are we in the wave? Is this just, is this just the beginning? Are we in the thick of it? >> I think I would say we're kind of transitioning from early adopters, early majority phase in the whole, you know, crossing the chasm analogy, right? So I would say we're still early stages of this big wave. That's going to transform how infrastructure is built. Apps are apps are built and managed and run in production. I think some of the pieces, the key pieces are falling in place and maturing. There are some other pieces like observability and security, you know, kind of edge use cases need to be, you know, they're kind of going to get a lot more mature and you'll see that the cloud, as we know today, and the apps, as we know today, they're going to be radically different. And you know, if you're not building your apps and your business on this modern platform, on this modern infrastructure, you're going to be left behind. You know, I, my wife's birthday was a couple of days ago. I was telling the story to my couple of friends is that I, I used another flowers delivery website. They miss delivering the flowers on the same day, right. So they told me all kinds of excuses. Then I just went and looked up a, you know, like door dash, which is delivers, you know, and then, you know, like your food, but there's also flower delivery and door dash and I don't do I door dash flowers to her, and I can track the flower delivery all the way she did not need them, but my kids love the chocolates though. Right. So, and you know, the case in point is that you cannot be in a building, a modern business without leveraging the model tool chain and modern tool chain and how the business is going to be delivered at that thing is going to be changing dramatically. And those kinds of customer experience, if you don't deliver, you're not going to be successful in business. And Kubernetes is the fundamental technology that enables this containers is a fundamental piece of technology that enables building new businesses, you know, modernizing existing businesses. And the 5G is going to be, there's going to be new innovations. It's going to get unleashed. And again, Kubernetes and containers enable us to leverage those. And so we're still scratching the surface on this. It's big. Now, it's going to be much, much bigger, you know, as, as we go into the next couple of years. >> Speaking, scratching the surface, Micah, take us out in the last 30 seconds or so with where CHG healthcare is on institutional transformation, how is Portworx facilitating that? >> So we're, we're right in the thick of it. I mean, we are, we still have what we call the legacy. We're working on getting those, but I mean, we're really moving forward to provide that rich experience, especially with event driven platforms like Kafka and Kubernetes and partnering with Portworx is one of the key things for us with that. And AWS along with that. But we're a, and I remember I heard a talk and I can't, I can't remember her name, but he talked about how, how Pure Kubernetes is sort of like the 56K modem, right. You're hearing it and see, but it's got to get to the point where it's just there. It's just the high-speed internet and Kelsey Hightower. That's great. But yeah, and I really liked that because that's true, you know, and that's where we are. We're all in that transition where we're still early, it's still at 50. So you still want to hear note, you still want to do cube CTL. You want to learn it the hard way and do all that fun stuff. But eventually it's going to be where it's just, it's just there. And it's running everything like 5G. I mean, stripped down doing micro, you know, Kate's things like that. You know, we're going to see it in a lot of other areas and just periphery and really accelerate the industry in compute and memory and storage, and. >> Yeah, a lot of acceleration. Guys thank you. This has been a really interesting session. I always love digging into customer use cases. How CHG is really driving its evolution with Portworx. So Michael, first of all, let's go ahead and start with you, give the audience an overview of CHG healthcare. >>Yeah, so CHG Healthcare were a staffing company so we sure like a locum pen and so our clients are doctors and hospitals, so we help staff hospitals with temporary doctors or even permanent placing. The acquisition of port works by peer storage was about a year ago I talked to us about your VP of product, what's going on? >>Yeah, I mean, you know, first of all, I think I could not say how much of a great fit for a port works to be part of your storage. It's uh uh Pure itself is a very fast moving large start up that's a dominant leader in a flash and data center space. And you know, pure recognizes the fact that Cuban it is is the new operating system of the cloud is now how you know, it's kind of virtualizing the cloud itself and there is a, you know, a big burgeoning need for data management in communities and how you can kind of orchestrate work lords between your on prem data centers in the cloud and back. So port books fits right into the story as complete vision of data management for our customers and uh spend phenomenal or business has grown as part of being part of Pure and uh you know, we're looking at uh launching some new products as well and it's all exciting times. >>So you must have been pretty delighted to be acquired as a startup by essentially a startup because because although pure has reached significant milestones in the storage business and is a leader in flash storage still, that, that startup mindset is there, that's unique, that's not, that's not the same as being acquired by a company that's been around for 100 years seeking to revitalize >>itself. And, you know, that's the third vector of potatoes Africans >>like a question for you. So what works has been a part of peer storage? You've known it since obviously for several years before you were a c h G, you brought up to see H G, you now know it a year into being acquired by a fast paced startup. Talk to me about the relationship and some of the benefits that you're getting with port works as a part of pure storage. >>Well, I mean one of the things, you know, when, when I heard about the accusation, my first thing was I was a little bit concerned is that relationship going to change and when we were acquiring, when we're looking at a doctor and Poor works, One thing I would tell my management is poor works is not just a vendor that wants to throw a solution on you and provide some capability there, partner, they want to partner with you and your success in your journey and this whole cloud native journey to provide this rich digital experience for not only our platform engineering team, but our dev teams, but also be able to really accelerate the development of our services so we can provide that digital portal for our end users and that didn't change. If anything that accelerated that that relationship did not change. You know, I came to the cat with an issue we just, we're dealing with, he immediately got someone on the phone call with me and so that has not changed. So it's really exciting to see that now that they've been acquired that they still are very much invested in the success of their customers and making sure we're successful. You know, it's not all of a sudden I was worried I was gonna have to do a whole different support process and it's gonna go into a black hole didn't happen. They still are very much involved with their customers. And >>that sounds kind of similar to what you talked about with the cultural alignment I've known here for a long time and they're very customer centric. Sounds like one of the areas in which there was a very strong alignment with port works. >>Absolutely important works has always taken pride in being customer. First company. Our founders are heavily customer focused. Uh, you know, they are aligned. They want, they have always aligned uh, the portraits business to our customers needs. Uh Pure is a company that's men. I actually focused on customers, right? I mean, that's all, you know, purist founder cause and everybody care about and so, you know, bringing these companies together and being part of the pure team. I kind of see how synergistic it is. And you know, we have, you know, that has enabled us to serve our customers customers even better than before. >>So, I'm curious about the two of you personally, in terms of your histories, I'm going to assume that you didn't both just bounce out of high school into the world of kubernetes, right? So like lisa and I your spanning the generations between the world of, say, virtualization based on X 86 architecture and virtualization where you can have microservices, you have a full blown operating system that you're working with, that kind of talk about, you know, Michael with you first talk about what that's been like navigating that change. We were in the midst of that, Do you have advice for others that are navigating that change? >>Don't be afraid of it, you know, a lot of people want to, you know, I call it, we're moving from where we're uh naming, we still have cats and dogs, they have a name, the VMS either whether or not their physical boxes or their VMS to where it's more like it's a cattle, you know, it's like we don't own the Os and not to be afraid afraid of that because change is really good. You know, the ability for me to not have to worry about patching and operating system is huge, you know, where I can rely on someone like the chaos and and the version and allow them to, if CV comes out, they let me know I go and I use their tools to be able to upgrade. So I don't have to literally worry about owning that Os and continues the same thing. You know, you, you, you know, it's all about being fault tolerant, right? And being able to be changed where you can actually brought a new version of a container, a base image with a lot of these without having to go and catch a bunch of servers, I mean patch night was held, I'm sorry if I could say that, but it was a nightmare, you know, but this whole world has just been a game changer >>with that. So Van cut from your perspective, you were coming at it, going into a startup, looking at the landscape in the future and seeing opportunity, um what what what's that been like for you? I guess the question for you is more something lisa and I talk about this concept of peak kubernetes, where are we in the wave, is this just is this just the beginning, are we in the thick of it? >>Yeah, I think I would say we're kind of transitioning from earlier doctors too early majority face in the whole, you know, um crossing the chasm analogy. Right, so uh I would say we're still the early stages of this big wave that's going to transform how infrastructure is built, apps are, apps are built and managed and run in production. Um I think some of the uh pieces, the key pieces are falling in place and maturing, uh there are some other pieces like observe ability and security, uh you know, kind of edge use cases need to be, you know, they're kind of going to get a lot more mature and you'll see that the cloud as we know today and the apps as we know today, they're going to be radically different and you know, if you're not building your apps and your business on this modern platform, on this modern infrastructure, you're gonna be left behind. Um, you know, I, my wife's birthday was a couple of days ago. I was telling this story a couple of friends is that I r I used another flowers delivery website. Uh they missed delivering the flowers on the same day, right? So when they told me all kinds of excuses, then I just went and looked up, you know, like door dash, which delivers uh, you know, and then, you know, like your food, but there's also flower delivery, indoor dash and I don't do it, I door dash flowers to her and I can track the flower does all the way she did not eat them, okay, You need them. But my kids love the chocolates though. So, you know, the case in point is that you cannot be, you know, building a modern business without leveraging the moral toolchain and modern toolchain and how the business is going to be delivered. That that thing is going to be changing dramatically. And those kind of customer experience, if you don't deliver, uh, you're not gonna be successful in business and communities is the fundamental technology that enables these containers. It's a fundamental piece of technology that enables building new businesses, you know, modernizing existing businesses and the five G is gonna be, there's gonna be new innovations that's going to get unleashed. And uh, again, communities and containers enable us to leverage those. And so we're still scratching the surface on this, it's big now, it's going to be much, much bigger as we go to the next couple of years. >>Speaking of scratching the surface, Michael, take us out in the last 30 seconds or so with where CHG healthcare is on its digital transformation. How is port works facilitating that? >>So we're right in the thick of it. I mean we are we still have what we call the legacy, we're working on getting those. But I mean we're really moving forward um to provide that rich experience, especially with inventing driven platforms like Kafka and Kubernetes and partnering with port works is one of the key things for us with that and a W s along with that. But we're, and I remember I heard a talk and I can't, I can't remember me but he he talked about how, how kubernetes just sort of like 56 K. Modem, You're hearing it, see, but it's got to get to the point where it's just there, it's just the high speed internet and Kelsey Hightower, That's who Great. Yeah, and I really like that because that's true, you know, and that's where we're on that transition, where we're still early, it's still that 50. So you still want to hear a note, you still want to do cube Cto, you want to learn it the hard way and do all that fun stuff, but eventually it's gonna be where it's just, it's just there and it's running everything like five G. I mean stripped down doing Micro K. It's things like that, you know, we're gonna see it in a lot of other areas and just proliferate and really accelerate uh the industry and compute and memory and, and storage and >>yeah, a lot of acceleration guys, thank you. Our next two guests is Mike Bundy, senior director of Global Cisco Lines with pure storage and Z, who's in charge of Christ Francisco. Welcome to the Cube. Thanks for joining >> us. Thank you for having us here. >> Also one, but we're in the definite zone. It's packed with people learning really use cases. Get rolling up the sleeves. Talk about the Cisco pure relationship. How do you guys fit into all this? What's the alliance? >> You understand? >> Sure. So we have a partnership with Cisco, primarily around a solution called flashback in the Converse infrastructure space. And most recently, we've evolved a new use case, an application together for our official intelligence that Z's business unit have just released a new platform that works with Cisco and in video to accomplish. You know, customer application needs mainly in machine learning, but but all aspects of our official intel it >> Hey, Eyes, obviously hot trend in machine learning. But today it's Cisco. The big story was, it's not about the data center as much anymore is. It's the data at the center of the value proposition, which spans the on premises I ot edge and multiple clouds. So data now is every where you gonna store it? So it's going to start in. The cloud is on premises. Data at the center means a lot of things you can programme with its gotta be addressable and has be smart and aware and take advantage of networking. So, with all that is a background backdrop, what is the A I approach? How should people think about a I in context to storing data using data, not just moving package from point A to point B? But you're storing it? You're pulling it out. You're in agreeing into apple cases. A lot of moving parts there. What's that? >> Yeah, you got a really good point here. When people think about machine learning traditional age, they just think about training. But we look at this more than Chinese. The whole did a pipeline that starts with collecting the data stored the data, analyze the data between the data and didn't deploy it and then for the data back. So it's really a vory. It's a cycle there, right? It's it's where you need to consider >> how you actually collect the data from the edge, how you store them in the speed that you can and give the data to the training side. So I believe way work was pure. We try to create this as a whole data pipeline and thinking about entire data movement and the star, which need that would look here. >> So we're in the definite zone, and I'm looking at the machine learning with Python ML library >> center >> Flow of Apache sparked a >> lot of this data >> science type stuff, but increasingly a ISA workload that's going mainstream. But what The trends that you guys are seeing in terms of, you know, traditional, I tease involvement is >> it's still sort of >> a I often an island. What are you seeing there? So I'll take a take a gas stab at it. So, really, every major company industry that we work with have you know, Aye, aye. Initiatives. It's the core of the future for their business. So, no, what we're trying to do is partner with I t to get ahead of the large infrastructure demands that will come from those smaller, innovative projects that Aeryn pilot mode so that they are a partner to the business and the data scientist, rather than, you know, a laggard in the business. The way that you know, sometimes there the reputation that that I guess we want to be the infrastructure solid, you know, like a cloud like experience for the data scientists. So they can worry more about the applications, the data, what it means the business and less about the infrastructure. Okay. And so you guys are trying to simplify that >> infrastructure, whether it's converged infrastructure. No other sort of unifying approaches is Are you seeing the shift of a sort of that heavy lifting of people out now? Shifting resource is, too. You work loads like a I Maybe you could discuss trends, are there? >> Yeah, absolutely. So I think I started was more like a data signs experiment. Right? You see, want to date, assigns a couple of data science experiment. Now it's really getting into ministry. More and more people report into that and us. Apologize. Mike, Mike, The way we start that questions my deep apology. I need a GP or something. >> Like, I need to >> store the data better. >> Your fortnight? Yes. >> So as Micah's had early on, right? It's it's not just the data scientist is actually all a challenge as well. And I think was Cisco, where twenty do was pure. Here is, you know, that Cisco thing. We're saying we're breach right. We want to bridge the gap between the data scientists and the it and make it not just as experiments, but a scale at production level and be wedded to actually, Crew will impact with the technology infrastructure that we can table >> might talk about yours position You guys have announced here in the cloud. Yes, he's seeing that software. Focus software is the key here. Or you can get to a software model. Aye, aye. And she learned Only we're talking about is software data is now available to be addressed and managing that software. Lifecycle. How is this Corolla software for you guys? With converge infrastructure at the San Francisco announce your downstage day, we'll converge infrastructure to the edge. >> Yeah, so if you look at the plant, one that we built, that's it's referenced by being called the data hub. The data hub has a very tight synergy, with all the applications referring to spark tenser PLO, etcetera, etcetera cafe. So we look it as the next generation analytics, and the platform has a super layer on top of all those applications because that that's going to really make the integration possible for the data scientists. They could go quicker and faster. What we're trying to do underneath that is used the data hub that no matter what the size, whether it's small data, large data transaction based or more bulk data warehouse type applications, you know the data hub in the flash blade solution or need handle all of that very, very different and probably more optimizing and easier than traditional legacy infrastructures, even tradition, even even even flash, you know, from some of our competitors. Because, you know, we've built this a purpose built application for that, you know, not trying to go backwards in terms of technology, >> I want to put both you guys on the spot for a question. We hear infrastructure is code for going on many, many years since the few started at nine years ago. Infrastructures code. Now it's here. The network's programmable infrastructures, programmable storages, programmable What a customer! Or someone asked you. How is infrastructure Network's in storage, Programmable. And what do I do? I'm used to provisional storage. I've got servers. I'm going cloud. What do I do? How do I become? A. I enabled that I could program the infrastructure. How do you guys answer that question? >> So a lot of that comes to the infrastructure management layer, right? How do you actually using policy and using the white infrastructure managing to make the right configuration want? And I think one thing from program eligibility is also flexibility. Instead of having just a fixed conflagration. What we're doing with pure here is really having that flexibility right where you can put pure Star Ridge different kind of star, which was different, kind off. Compute that you have. No matter. It's we're talking about two are used for you. That kind of computing power is different and connects with a different Star wars, depending on what the customer use cases. So that flexibility driven by the driven to the proper program ability that is managed by the infrastructure. Imagine a layer, and we're extending that So pure and Cisco's infrastructure management actually tying together it's really single pane of glass was in decide that we can actually manage both pure and Cisco. That's the program ability that we're talking >> about. Get pure storage and to end manageability. >> Where's the Cisco compute its A single pane of glass. >> So what do I buy? I want to get started. What? What do you got for me? What you have, it's pretty simple. Three basic components, you know, Cisco Compute and a platform for machine learning that's powered by and video GP. Use Cisco Flash Blade, which is the data hub and storage component and then network connectivity from the number one network provider in the world. Francisco. Very simple. It's askew. It's a solution. It's very, very skewed. It's very simple. It's data driven, so you know it's not tied to a specific skew. It's more flexible than that. So you have a better optimization of the network. You know you don't buy a one thousand Siri's ex. Okay, Only used fifty percent of it. It's very customized. Okay, so I can customize it for my whatever data science team or my workloads and provisioning for multipurpose. Same way of service provider would ifyou're a large organization >> trend trend around Breaking Silas has been being discussed heavily. Talk about multiple clouds on premise and cloud and edge all coming together. How should companies think about their data architecture on? Because Silas Air good for certain things to make multi cloud work and all this and to end and intent based networking and all the power of a eyes around the corner. You gotta have the date out there, right? It's gotta be horizontally scaleable of you. How do you break down those silos? Twitter advises air use cases or anarchic for architecture. >> You know what I think? It's a classic example of how it has evolved to not think just silos and be multi cloud. So you know, we've advocate is is you have a date, a platform that transpires the entire community, whether its development, test engineering production applications and that, you know, runs holistically across the entire organization that would include on from it would include integration with the cloud. Because most you know cos now require, That s so you could have different levels of high availability or lower cost if your data needs to be archived. So it's really, you know, building and thinking about The data is on platform across the across the company and not just you know, silos for >> replication never goes away. Never. It's gonna be around for a long, long time. >> Deaf tests never goes away. Yeah, >> you thought some >> s o i. D On top of that, We believe where you infrastructure should go is where the data goes, right? You want to follow that where the data is, And that's exactly why I want a partner was pure here because we see a lot of the data sitting today in the very important infrastructure which is built by pure storage and want to make sure that we're not just building a sidle box sitting there where you have for the data in there all the time, but actually connected our chips. Silver was pure storage in the most manageable way. And it's the same kind of manager layer you're not thinking about All have to manage all the Sala box or the shadow it that some day that time would have under their desks. Right. That's the least thing you want it. >> And the other thing that came up in the Kino today, which we've been seeing on the Cuban, all the experts reaffirm, is moving data cost money got late in sea. Costs also just cost to move traffic around, so moving compute to the edge of moving. Compute to the data has been a big hot trend. How is the computer equation changed? I got storage. I'm moving. I'm not just moving packets around. I'm storing it and moving it around. How does that changed the computers? It put more emphasis on the computer. >> Wait, It's definitely putting a lot more emphasis on computer. I think it's where you want to compute to happen, right? You can pull all the data and I want it happen in the centre place. That's fine if that's the way you want to manage it. If you have, if you have already simplify the data, you want to put it in that way. If you want to do it at the edge near where the data sources, you can also do the cleaning there. So we want to make sure that no matter how you want to manage it. We have the portfolio that can actually help you to manage. And >> his alternative alternate processors mentioned video first. Yeah, you would deal with them in other ways to you've got to take advantage of technologies like uber, Nettie says. Example. So you can move the containers where they need to be and have policy managers for the computer requirements. And also, you know, storage so you don't have contention or data and integrity issues. So embracing those technologies and a multi cloud world, it's very, very >> like. I want to ask you a question around customer trends. What are you seeing as a pattern from a customer standpoint as they prepare for a I and start re factory? Some of their end or resource is. Is there a certain use case that they set up with pure in terms of how they set up their storage? Is it different by customers? Are a common trend that you see >> there are some commonalities, you know, like take financial services want trading as an example. We have a number of customers that leverage our platform for that. Is this very you know, time sensitive, high availability data? So really, I think the customers the trend over all of that would be a step back. Take a look at your data and focus on how can I correlate, Organize that and really get it ready so that whatever platform used from a story standpoint, you're you're thinking about all aspects of data and get it in a format in a forum where you can manage and catalog, because that's kind of the sentence. >> I mean, it really highlights all the key things that would say it in storage for a long time. I availability integrity of the data. And now you got at patient developers programming with data. This's a hole with a P IIs. Now you're slinging FBI's around like it's Tom mentioned me its weight should be. This is like Nirvana finally got here. How far along are we in the progress? How far we earlier we moving the needle? Where the >> customers himself a partnership partnership. Deanna >> and General, You guys were going to say, You got you got storage, You got networking and compute all kind of working together. That's reflex school elastic like the cloud >> I my feeling, mike, contract me or you can disagree with me. I think right now, if we look at all the wood analysts saying what we're saying, I think most of the companies more than fifty percent of companies either have deployed a Emma or are considering implant off deploying that right. But having said that, we do see that we're seeing at a relatively early stage because the challenges off making a deployment at scale where data scientist and I'd really working together, right? You need that level of security in that level, off skill ofthe infrastructure and software involving Devon I. So my feeling is where stew At a relatively early stage, >> I think we are in the early adopter face. You know, we've had customers for last two years. They've really been driving this way, worked with about seven of the automated car, you know, driving Cos. But, you know, if you look at the data from Morgan Stanley and other analysts, is about a thirteen billion dollars infrastructure that's required for a eye over the next three years from twenty, nineteen, twenty, twenty one. So you know, that is probably six x seven x what it is today, so we haven't quite hit that. >> So people are doing their homework right now. You are the leader. >> Its leaders in the industry, not mastering everybody else is going to close that gap. So that's where you guys come into helping that scale way built this. This platform with Cisco on is really flashback for a I is around scale for, you know, tens and twenties of petabytes of data that will be required for >> these targeted solution for a I with all the integration pieces Francisco built in. Yes. Great. We'll keep track of a look sighting. We think it's cliche to say future proof, but this, in this case, literally is preparing for the future. The bridge? >> Yes. Future. Yes. We're live in Silicon Valley for Big Data SV, Big Data Silicon Valley in conjunction with Strata + Hadoob. This is the week where it all happens in Silicon Valley around the emergence of the Big Data as it goes to the next level. The Cube is actually on the ground covering it like a blanket. I'm John Furrier. My cohost, George Gilbert with Boogie Bond. And our next guest, we have two executives from Zeloni, Ben Sharma, who's the founder and CEO, and Tony Fischer, SVP and strategy. Guys, welcome back to The Cube. Good to see you. >> Thank you for having us back. >> You guys are great guests. You're in New York for Big Data NYC, and a lot is going on, certainly, here, and it's just getting kicked off with Strata-Hadoob, they got the sessions today, but you guys have already got some news out there. Give us the update. What's the big discussion at the show? >> So yeah, 20-16 was a great year for us. A lot of growth. We tripled our customer base, and a lot of interest in data lake, as customers are going from say Pilot and POCs into production implementation so far though. And in conjunction with that, this week we launched what we call a solution named Data Lake in a Box, appropriately, right? So what that means is we're bringing the full stack together to customers, so that we can get a data lake up and running in eight weeks time frame, with enterprise create data ingestion from their source systems hydrated into the data lake and ready for analytics. >> So is it a pretty big box, and is it waterproof? (all laughing) I mean, this is the big discussion now, pun intended. But the data lake is evolving, so I wanted to get your take on it. This is kind of been a theme that's been leading up and now front and center here on The Cube. Already the data lake has changed, also we've heard, I think Dave Alante in New York said data swamp. But using the data is critical on a data lake. So as it goes to more mature model of leveraging the data, what are the key trends right now? What are you guys seeing? Because this is a hot topic that everyone is talking about. >> Well, that's a good distinction that we like to make, is the difference between a data swamp and a data lake. >> And a data lake is much more governed. It has the rigor, it has the automation, it has a lot of the concepts that people are used to from traditional architectures, only we apply them in the scale-out architecture. So we put together a maturity model that really maps out a customer's journey throughout the big data and the data lake experience. And each phase of this, we can see what the customer's doing, what their trends are and where they want to go, and we can advise to them the right way to move forward. And so a lot of the customers we see are kind of in kind of what we call the ignore stage. I'd say most of the people we talk to are just ignoring. They don't have things active, but they're doing a lot of research. They're trying to figure out what's next. And we want to move them from there. The next stage up is called store. And store is basically just the sandbox environment. "I'm going to stick stuff in there." "I'm going to hope something comes out of it." No collaboration. But then, moving forward, there's the managed phase, the automated phase, and the optimized phase. And our goal is to move them up into those phases as quickly as possible. And data lake in a box is an effort to do that, to leapfrog them into a managed data lake environment. >> So that's kind of where the swamp analogy comes in, because the data lake, the swamp is kind of dirty, where you can almost think, "Okay, the first step is store it." And then they get busy or they try to figure out how to operationalize it, and then it's kind of like, "Uh ..." So your point, they're trying to get to that. So you guys get 'em to that set up, and then move them quickly to value? Is that kind of the approach? >> Yeah. So, time to value is critical, right? So how do you reduce the time to insight from the time the data is produced by the date producer, till the time you can make the data available to the data consumer for analytics and downstream use cases. So that's kind of our core focus in bringing these solutions to the market. >> Dave often and I were talking, and George always talk about the value of data at the right time at the right place, is the critical lynch-pin for the value, whether it's an app-driven, or whatever. So the data lake, you never know what data in the data lake will need to be pulled out and put into either real time or an app. So you have to assume at any given moment there's going to be data value. >> Sure >> So that, conceptually, people can get that. But how do you make that happen? Because that's a really hard problem. How do you guys tackle that when a customer says, "Hey, I want to do the data lake. "I've got to have the coverage. "I got to know who's accessing stuff. "But at the end of the day, "I got to move the data to where it's valuable." >> Sure. So the approach we have taken is with an integrated platform with a common metadata layer. Metadata is the key. So, using this common metadata layer, being able to do managed ingestion from various different sources, being able to do data validation and data quality, being able to manage the life cycle of the data, being able to generate these insights about the data itself, so that you can use that effectively for data science or for downstream applications and use cases is critical based on our experience of taking these applications from, say, a POC pilot phase into a production phase. >> And what's the next step, once you guys get to that point with the metadata? Because, like, I get that, it's like everyone's got the metadata focus. Now, I'm the data engineer, the data NG or the geek, the supergeek and then you've got the data science, then the analysts, then there will probably be a new category, a bot or something AI will do something. But you can have a spectrum of applications on the data side. How do they get access to the metadata? Is it through the machine learning? Do you guys have anything unique there that makes that seamless or is that the end goal? >> Sure, do you want to take that? >> Yes sure, it's a multi-pronged answer, but I'll start and you can jump in. One of the things we provide as part of our overall platform is a product called Micah. And Micah is really the kind of on-ramp to the data. And all those people that you just named, we love them all, but their access to the data is through a self-service data preparation product, and key to that is the metadata repository. So, all the metadata is out there; we call it a catalog at that point, and so they can go in, look at the catalog, get a sense for the data, get an understanding for the form and function of the data, see who uses it, see where it's used, and determine if that's the data that they want, and if it is, they have the ability to refine it further, or they can put it in a shopping cart if they have access to it, they can get it immediately, they can refine it, if they don't have access to it, there's an automatic request that they can get access to it. And so it's a onramp concept, of having a card catalog of all the information that's out there, how it's being used, how it's been refined, to allow the end user to make sure that they've got the right data, they can be positioned for their ultimate application. >> And just to add to what Tony said, because we are using this common metadata layer, and capturing metadata every instance, if you will, we are serving it up to the data consumers, using a rich catalog, so that a lot of our enterprise customers are now starting to create what they consider a data marketplace or a data portal within their organization, so that they're able to catalog not just the data that's in the data lake, but also data that's in other data stores. And provide one single unified view of these data sets, so that your data scientists can come in and see is this a data set that I can use for my model building? What are the different attributes of this data set? What is the quality of the data? How fresh is the data? And those kind of traits, so that they are effective in their analytical journey. >> I think that's the key thing that's interesting to me, is that you're seeing the big data explosions over the past ten years, eight years, we've been covering The Cube since the dupe world started. But now, it's the data set world, so it's a big data set in this market. The data sets are the key because that's what data scientists want to wrangle around with, and sling data sets with whatever tooling they want to use. Is that kind of the same trend that you guys see? >> That's correct. And also what we're seeing in the marketplace, is that customers are moving from a single architecture to a distributed architecture, where they may have a hybrid environment with some things being instantiated in the Cloud, some things being on PRIM. So how do you not provide a unified interface across these multiple environments, and in a governed way, so that the right people have access to the right data, and it's not the data swamp. >> Okay, so lets go back to the maturity model because I like that framework. So now you've just complicated the heck out of it. Cause now you've got Cloud, and then on PRIM, and then now, how do you put that prism of maturity model, on now hybrid, so how does that cross-connect there? And a second follow-up to that is, where are the customers on this progress bar? I'm sure they're different by customer but, so, maturity model to the hybrid, and then trends in the customer base that you're seeing? >> Alright, I'll take the second one, and then you can take the first one, okay? So, the vast majority of the people that we work with, and the people, the prospects customers, analysts we've talked to, other industry dignitaries, they put the vast majority of the customers in the ignore stage. Really just doing their research. So a good 50% plus of most organizations are still in that stage. And then, the data swamp environment, that I'm using it to store stuff, hopefully I'll get something good out of it. That's another 25% of the population. And so, most of the customers are there, and we're trying to move them kind of rapidly up and into a managed and automated data lake environment. The other trend along these lines that we're seeing, that's pretty interesting, is the emergence of IT in the big data world. It used to be a business user's world, and business users built these sandboxes, and business users did what they wanted to. But now, we see organizations that are really starting to bring IT into the fold, because they need the governance, they need the automation, they need the type of rigor that they're used to, in other data environments, and has been lacking in the big data environment. >> And you've got the IOT code cracking the code on the IOT side which has created another dimension of complexity. On the numbers of the 50% that ignore, is that profile more for Fortune 1000? >> It's larger companies, it's Fortune, and Global 2000. >> Got it, okay, and the terms of the hybrid maturity model, how's that, and add a third dimension, IOT, we've got a multi-dimensional chess game going here. >> I think they way we think about it is, that they're different patterns of data sets coming in. So they could be batched, they could be files, or database extracts, or they could be streams, right? So as long as you think about a converged architecture that can handle these different patterns, then you can map different use cases whether they are IOT and streaming use cases versus what we are seeing is that a lot of companies are trying to replace their operational analytics platforms with a data lake environment, and they're building their operational analytics on top of the data lake, correct? So you need to think more from an abstraction layer, how do you abstract it out? Because one of the challenges that we see customers facing, is that they don't want to get sticky with one Cloud service provider because they may have multiple Cloud service providers, >> John: It's a multi-Cloud world right now. >> So how do you leverage that, where you have one Cloud service provider in one geo, another Cloud service provider in another geo, and still being able to have an abstraction layer on top of it, so that you're building applications? >> So do you guys provide that data layer across that abstraction? >> That is correct, yes, so we leverage the ecosystem, but what we do is add the data management and data governance layer, we provide that abstraction, so that you can be on PREM, you can be in Cloud service provider one, or Cloud service provider two. You still have the same controls, and same governance functions as you build your data lake environment. >> And this is consistent with some of the Cube interviews we had all day today, and other Cube interviews, where when you had the Cloud, you're renting basically, but you own your data. You get to have a nice ... And that metadata seems to be the key, that's the key, right? For everything. >> That's right. And now what we're seeing is that a lot of our Enterprise customers are looking at bringing in some of the public cloud infrastructure into their on-PRAM environment as they are going to be available in appliances and things like that, right? So how do you then make sure that whatever you're doing in a non-enterprise cloud environment you are also able to extend it to the enterprise-- >> And the consequences to the enterprise is that the enterprise multiple jobs, if they don't have a consistent data layer ... >> Sure, yeah. >> It's just more redundancy. >> Exactly. >> Not redundancy, duplication actually. >> Yeah, duplication and difficulty of rationalizing it together. >> So let me drill down into a little more detail on the transition between these sort of maturity phases? And then the movement into production apps. I'm curious to know, we've heard Tableau, XL, Power BI, Click I guess, being-- sort of adapting to being front ends to big data. But they don't, for their experience to work they can't really handle big data sets. So you need the MPP sequel database on the data lake. And I guess the question there is is there value to be gotten or measurable value to be gotten just from turning the data lake into you know, interactive BI kind of platform? And sort of as the first step along that maturity model. >> One of the patterns we were seeing is that serving LIR is becoming more and more mature in the data lake, so that earlier it used to be mainly batch type of workloads. Now, with MPP engines running on the data lake itself, you are able to connect your existing BI applications, whether it's Tableau, Click, Power BI, and others, to these engines so that you are able to get low-latency query response times and are able to slice-and-dice your data sets in the data lake itself. >> But you're essentially still, you have to sample the data. You can't handle the full data set unless you're working with something like Zoom Data. >> Yeah, so there are physical limitations obviously. And then there are also this next generation of BI tools which work in a converged manner in the data lake itself. So there's like Zoom Data, Arcadia, and others that are able to kind of run inside the data lake itself instead of you having to have an external environment like the other BI tools, so we see that as a pattern. But if you already are an enterprise, you have on board a BI platform, how do you leverage that with the data lake as part of the next-generation architecture is a key trend that we are seeing. >> So that your metadata helps make that from swamp to curated data lake. >> That's right, and not only that what we have done, as Tony was mentioning, in our Micah product we have a self-service catalog and then we provide a shopping cart experience where you can actually source data sets into the shopping cart, and we let them provision a sandbox. And when they provision the sandbox, they can actually launch Tableau or whatever the BI tool of choice is on that sandbox, so that they can actually-- and that sandbox could exist in the data lake or it could exist on a relational data store or an MPP data store that's outside of the data lake. That's part of your modern data architecture. >> But further to your point, if people have to throw out all of their decision support applications and their BI applications in order to change their data infrastructure, they're not going to do it. >> Understood. >> So you have to make that environment work and that's what Ben's referring to with a lot of the new accelerator tools and things that will sit on top of the data lake. >> Guys, thanks so much for coming on The Cube. Really appreciate it. I'll give you guys the final word in the segment ... What do you expect this week? I mean, obviously, we've been seeing the consolidation. You're starting to see the swim lanes of with Spark and Open Source and you see the cloud and IOT colliding, there's a huge intersection with deep learning, AI is certainly hyped up now beyond all recognition but it's essentially deep learning. Neural networks meets machine learning. That's been around before, but now freely available with Cloud and Compute. And so kind of a interesting dynamic that's rockin' the big data world. Your thoughts on what we're going to see this week and how that relates to the industry? >> I'll take a stab at it and you may feel free to jump in. I think what we'll see is that lot of customers that have been playing with big data for a couple of years are now getting to a point where what worked for one or two use cases now needs to be scaled out and provided at an enterprise scale. So they're looking at a managed and a governance layer to put on top of the platform. So they can enable machine learning and AI and all those use cases, because business is asking for them. Right? Business is asking for how they can bring intenser flow and run on the data lake itself, right? So we see those kind of requirements coming up more and more frequently. >> Awesome. Tony? >> What he said. >> And enterprise readiness certainly has to be table-- there's a lot of table stakes in the enterprise. It's not like, easy to get into, you can see Google kind of just putting their toe in the water with the Google cloud, tenser flow, great highlight they got spanner, so all these other things like latency rearing their heads again. So these are all kind of table stakes. >> Yeah, and the other thing, moving forward with respect to machine learning and some of the advanced algorithms, what we're doing now and some of the research we're doing is actually using machine learning to manage the data lake, which is a new concept, so when we get to the optimized phase of our maturity model, a lot of that has to do with self-correcting and self-automating. >> I need some machine learning and some AI, so does George and we need machine learning to watch the machine learn, and then algorithmists for algorithms. It's a crazy world, exciting time for us. >> Are we going to have a bot next time when we come here? (all laughing) >> We're going to chat off of messenger, we just came from south by southwest.
