We're talking today about the future of work and co vid. The pandemic has certainly transformed so much about the way we live and the way we were is changed the way we communicate the way we collaborate, the way we accomplish what we want to accomplish. I want to start with you. Harold, can you give us, um, broad brush thoughts about how this pandemic has changed the future of >>work? Well, this is quite interesting because we were talking about the future of work as something that was going to come in the future. But the future waas very, very long, far away from where we are right now. Now, suddenly, we brought the future of work to our current reality covered, transformed or accelerated the digital transformation that was already happening. So digital transformation was something that we were pushing somehow or influencing a lot because it's a need because everything is common digital. All our life has transformed because of the digital implementation, off new technologies in all areas. But for companies, what was quite interesting is the fact that they were looking for or thinking about when toe implement or starting implementing nuisance in terms of technology. On suddenly the decision Waas, where now we are in this emergency emergency mode that the Covic that the pandemic created in our organizations on this prompted and push a lot of this decision that we were thinking maybe in the future to start doing to put it right now. But this gay also brought a lot of issues in terms off how we deal with customers. Because this is continuity is our priority. How we deal with employees, how we make sure that employees, customers on we and the management this in relation are all connected in the street and work together to provide our president services to our customers. >>So you're talking about Kobe is really a forcing mechanism that has has really accelerated the digital transformation that so many companies in the U. S. And also around the world. Um, we heard from the previous panel that there was this Yes. We can attitude this idea that we can make this happen, um, things that were ordinarily maybe too challenging or something that we push a little bit further down the road. Do you think that that is how pervasive is that attitude and is that yes, we can. And yes, we have Thio. >>Absolutely, absolutely. You know, here in Miami, in Florida, we are used to have the hurricanes. When we have a hurricane is something that Everybody gets an alarm mode emergency mode and everybody started running. But we think or we work on business continuity implementing the product culture policies. But at the same time we think, Okay, people before a couple of which no more than that. Now, when we have those situations we have really see, we really see this positive attitude. Everybody wants to work together. Everybody wants to push to make things happen. Everybody works in a very collaborative mode. Everybody really wants to team and bring ideas and bring the energy that is necessary so we can make it happen. So I would say that now that is something that the pandemic product to the new situation where we don't know how long this mist ake this will take maybe a couple of months more, maybe a year. Maybe more than that, we still don't know. But we really know is that digital transformation on the future of work that we were thinking was going to be on the wrong way Now is something that we're not going back with this >>chip. I want to bring you in here. We're hearing that the future of work is now and this shift toward the new normal. I want to hear you talk a little bit about what you're seeing in terms of increased agility and adaptability and flexibility. How is that playing out, particularly with regard to technology? >>Yeah, I think the the yes, we can attitude. We see that all over the place and many instances it's like heroic efforts. And we heard that from the panel, right? Literally heroic efforts happening and people are doing that. It reminds me of an example with the UK National Health System, where we rolled out 1.2 million teams, Microsoft teams users in seven days. I mean, those are the kinds of things we're seeing all over the place, and and now that yes, we can approach is kind of sinking in. And I think Harold was kind of talking about that, right? It's sinking in tow, how we're looking at technology every day. We're seeing things like, you know, the the acceleration of the move to cloud, for example, a substantial acceleration to the movement, the cloud, a substantial acceleration to be more agile, and we're just seeing that kind of in in all of our work now and and That's the focus for organizations they want to know now. How do we capture this amazing innovation that happened as a result of this event and take it forward in their organizations going forward? >>And so they're thinking about how they captured this. But Herbert, at this time of tremendous uncertainty and at a time when the economic recovery, the global economic recovery, is stop and start, how are you thinking about prioritizing? What kinds of criteria are you using and how are you evaluating what needs to happen? >>I think that's very simple, and I use my standard procedure here in the most e think it must be possible for the users and therefore, for the companies to work and be productive. That's that's, I think, the most important thing technology should be provided the best possible support here, for example, of the state off the our digital workplace. But in this uncertain times, we have some new demands At the moment. That means we have new priorities, for example, conducting teamwork ships online. Normally, we have conducted such events in special conference rooms or in a hotel for the will of the world, for example, we now have the requirement create all off our workshops and also the documentation off it we had to Allah instead of using, for example, physical pain, port to group topics and so on. So we saw here a change that larger events to We need the factions for breakout rooms and so on. And honestly, at the moment, big events in the with the world will not Still the same leg in a physical world, for example Ah, big conferences, technology conferences and so on. >>No, Absolutely. And what you're describing is this this hybrid world in which some people are going into offices and and others of us are not, And we are we're doing what we need to dio in in digital formats. I wanna ask you chip about this hybrid workplace. This appears to be this construct that we're seeing more and more in the marketplace. We heard Gen. Brent of HP talking about this in the previous panel. How do you see this playing out in the next 12 to 24 months and beyond, even in our pandemic and and post pandemic lives? And what do you see as the primary advantages and drawbacks of having this hybrid workforce. >>Well, I I think it's very interesting, right? And I think it s century. We were very lucky because we are 500,000 employees that have been fully, you know, kind of hybrid work or remote enabled, even going into the pandemic. And many other companies and organizations did not have that in place, right? The key to me is you had this protective environment will call the office right where everybody went in tow work to they had their technology there. The security was in place around that office, and everything was kind of focused on that office and all sudden, that office, it didn't disappear, but it became distributed. And the key behind we are a big user of Aruba Technologies within Accenture. And it became very important, in my view, to be able to take >>ah, >>lot of the concepts that you brought into the office and distributed it out. So we're we have offerings where we're using technologies such as Aruba's remote access points in virtual desktop technologies, right that enable us to take all the rules >>and >>capability and functionality and security that you had in that nice controlled office environment and roll it out, thio the workers wherever they may be sitting now, whether it be at home, whether it be sitting on the road someplace, um, traveling whatever. And that's really important. And I did see a couple instances with organizations where they had security incidents because of the way they rolled out that office of the future. So it's really important as we go forward that not only do we look at the enablement, but we also make sure we're securing that to our principles and standards going >>forward. >>So the principles and standards I wanna I wanna talk to you a little bit about that. Harold. There are the security elements that we that we just heard about. But there's also the culture, the workplace culture, the mission, the values of the organization when employees air not co located. When we are talking about distributed teams, how do you make sure that those values are are consistent throughout the organization and that employees do feel that they are part of something bigger, even if they're not in the cubicle next door or just in the hallway? >>That that is a great question, because here what happens now is that we still need to find a balance in the way we work. Maybe some company says we need to fool the day with busier conferences so we can see each other so we can make sure what we're doing and we're connected. But also we need to get some balance because we need to make sure that we have time to do the job. Everybody needs to do their job but also need to communicate to each other on communication, in the whole group, in a video in several video conferences in the day. Maybe it's not enough or not with effective for that communication. So we need to find the right balance because we have a lot of tools, a lot of technology that can help us on by helping us in this moment to make sure that we are sharing our values, values that common set off values that makes or defines on how organizations need to be present in every interaction that we have with our employees on. We need to also make sure that we're taking care off the needs off employees because when we see from a former employee standpoint, what is going on we need to understand the context that we're working today instead of working on at the office. We're working from home at home. Always. We have also we have our partners wife, Children also that are in the same place. We're also connected with work or with distance learning so that there is a new environment, the home environment, that from a company perspective, also needs to be taken into consideration now how we share our values well, it's a time something that we need to understand. Also, that we all always try to understand is that every crisis bring on opportunity together. So we should see. This also is an opportunity toe. Refocus our strategies on culture not to emerge stronger on to put everybody with the yes attitude with really desire to make things happen every day in this time in this same symphony. Oh, but how we do that also, it's an opportunity for delivering training. Delivery is an opportunity to make sure that we identify those skills that are needed for the future of work in the digitals, because we have a lot of digital training that is needed on those skills that are not exactly a tech, but they are needed also, from the human perspective to make sure that we are creating a strong culture that even working in a hybrid or or remote work, we can be strong enough in the market. >>So I wanna let everyone here have the last word in picking up on on that last point that this is an exceedingly complex time for everyone, Unprecedented. There's so much uncertainty. What is your best advice for leaders as they navigate their employees through this hybrid remote work environment? Um, I want to start with you, Herbert. >>From my opinion, I think communication is very important. So communicate with your team and your employees much more than in the past and toe and be clear in your statements and in your answers. I think it's very important for the team >>chip. Best advice. >>So you know, it feels like we've jumped maybe two years ahead and innovation, and I think you know, from a non organization standpoint, except that, you know, embrace it, capture it. But then also at the same time, make sure you're applying your principles of security and those pieces to it, so do it in the right way, but embrace the change that's that's happened, >>Harold. Last last. Best advice for for managers during this time >>he communication are absolutely essential. Now let's look for new way of communicating that it's not only sending emails is not only sending text messages, we need to find ways to connect to each other in this remote working environment on may be coming again. Toe pick up the phone on, Have a chat conversation with our employees are working remotely. But doing that with kind off frequently, I would say that would be very effective toe. Improve the communication on to create this environment where everybody feels part off an organization >>everyone feels part of the team. Well, thank you so much. All of you. Today's breakout session is entitled Keep Data Private Prepare and Analyze Without Unencrypting With Voltage SecureData for Vertica. I'm Paige Roberts, Open Source Relations Manager at Vertica, and I'll be your host for this session. Joining me is Rich Gaston, Global Solutions Architect, Security, Risk, and Government at Voltage. All right, let's get started. Over to you, Rich. >> Rich: Hey, thank you very much, Paige, and appreciate the opportunity to discuss this topic with the audience. My name is Rich Gaston and I'm a Global Solutions Architect, within the Micro Focus team, and I work on global Data privacy and protection efforts, for many different organizations, looking to take that journey toward breach defense and regulatory compliance, from platforms ranging from mobile to mainframe, everything in between, cloud, you name it, we're there in terms of our solution sets. Vertica is one of our major partners in this space, and I'm very excited to talk with you today about our solutions on the Vertica platform. First, let's talk a little bit about what you're not going to learn today, and that is, on screen you'll see, just part of the mathematics that goes into, the format-preserving encryption algorithm. We are the originators and authors and patent holders on that algorithm. Came out of research from Stanford University, back in the '90s, and we are very proud, to take that out into the market through the NIST standard process, and license that to others. So we are the originators and maintainers, of both standards and athureader in the industry. We try to make this easy and you don't have to learn any of this tough math. Behind this there are also many other layers of technology. They are part of the security, the platform, such as stateless key management. That's a really complex area, and we make it very simple for you. We have very mature and powerful products in that space, that really make your job quite easy, when you want to implement our technology within Vertica. So today, our goal is to make Data protection easy for you, to be able to understand the basics of Voltage Secure Data, you're going to be learning how the Vertica UDx, can help you get started quickly, and we're going to see some examples of how Vertica plus Voltage Secure Data, are going to be working together, in our customer cases out in the field. First, let's take you through a quick introduction to Voltage Secure Data. The business drivers and what's this all about. First of all, we started off with Breach Defense. We see that despite continued investments, in personal perimeter and platform security, Data breaches continue to occur. Voltage Secure Data plus Vertica, provides defense in depth for sensitive Data, and that's a key concept that we're going to be referring to. in the security field defense in depth, is a standard approach to be able to provide, more layers of protection around sensitive assets, such as your Data, and that's exactly what Secure Data is designed to do. Now that we've come through many of these breach examples, and big ticket items, getting the news around breaches and their impact, the business regulators have stepped up, and regulatory compliance, is now a hot topic in Data privacy. Regulations such as GDPR came online in 2018 for the EU. CCPA came online just this year, a couple months ago for California, and is the de-facto standard for the United States now, as organizations are trying to look at, the best practices for providing, regulatory compliance around Data privacy and protection. These gives massive new rights to consumers, but also obligations to organizations, to protect that personal Data. Secure Data Plus Vertica provides, fine grained authorization around sensitive Data, And we're going to show you exactly how that works, within the Vertica platform. At the bottom, you'll see some of the snippets there, of the news articles that just keep racking up, and our goal is to keep you off the news, to keep your company safe, so that you can have the assurance, that even if there is an unintentional, or intentional breach of Data out of the corporation, if it is protected by voltage Secure Data, it will be of no value to those hackers, and then you have no impact, in terms of risk to the organization. What do we mean by defense in depth? Let's take a look first at the encryption types, and the benefits that they provide, and we see our customers implementing, all kinds of different protection mechanisms, within the organization. You could be looking at disk level protection, file system protection, protection on the files themselves. You could protect the entire Database, you could protect our transmissions, as they go from the client to the server via TLS, or other protected tunnels. And then we look at Field-level Encryption, and that's what we're talking about today. That's all the above protections, at the perimeter level at the platform level. Plus, we're giving you granular access control, to your sensitive Data. Our main message is, keep the Data protected for at the earliest possible point, and only access it, when you have a valid business need to do so. That's a really critical aspect as we see Vertica customers, loading terabytes, petabytes of Data, into clusters of Vertica console, Vertica Database being able to give access to that Data, out to a wide variety of end users. We started off with organizations having, four people in an office doing Data science, or analytics, or Data warehousing, or whatever it's called within an organization, and that's now ballooned out, to a new customer coming in and telling us, we're going to have 1000 people accessing it, plus service accounts accessing Vertica, we need to be able to provide fine level access control, and be able to understand what are folks doing with that sensitive Data? And how can we Secure it, the best practices possible. In very simple state, voltage protect Data at rest and in motion. The encryption of Data facilitates compliance, and it reduces your risk of breach. So if you take a look at what we mean by feel level, we could take a name, that name might not just be in US ASCII. Here we have a sort of Latin one extended, example of Harold Potter, and we could take a look at the example protected Data. Notice that we're taking a character set approach, to protecting it, meaning, I've got an alphanumeric option here for the format, that I'm applying to that name. That gives me a mix of alpha and numeric, and plus, I've got some of that Latin one extended alphabet in there as well, and that's really controllable by the end customer. They can have this be just US ASCII, they can have it be numbers for numbers, you can have a wide variety, of different protection mechanisms, including ignoring some characters in the alphabet, in case you want to maintain formatting. We've got all the bells and whistles, that you would ever want, to put on top of format preserving encryption, and we continue to add more to that platform, as we go forward. Taking a look at tax ID, there's an example of numbers for numbers, pretty basic, but it gives us the sort of idea, that we can very quickly and easily keep the Data protected, while maintaining the format. No schema changes are going to be required, when you want to protect that Data. If you look at credit card number, really popular example, and the same concept can be applied to tax ID, often the last four digits will be used in a tax ID, to verify someone's identity. That could be on an automated telephone system, it could be a customer service representative, just trying to validate the security of the customer, and we can keep that Data in the clear for that purpose, while protecting the entire string from breach. Dates are another critical area of concern, for a lot of medical use cases. But we're seeing Date of Birth, being included in a lot of Data privacy conversations, and we can protect dates with dates, they're going to be a valid date, and we have some really nifty tools, to maintain offsets between dates. So again, we've got the real depth of capability, within our encryption, that's not just saying, here's a one size fits all approach, GPS location, customer ID, IP address, all of those kinds of Data strings, can be protected by voltage Secure Data within Vertica. Let's take a look at the UDx basics. So what are we doing, when we add Voltage to Vertica? Vertica stays as is in the center. In fact, if you get the Vertical distribution, you're getting the Secure Data UDx onboard, you just need to enable it, and have Secure Data virtual appliance, that's the box there on the middle right. That's what we come in and add to the mix, as we start to be able to add those capabilities to Vertica. On the left hand side, you'll see that your users, your service accounts, your analytics, are still typically doing Select, Update, Insert, Delete, type of functionality within Vertica. And they're going to come into Vertica's access control layer, they're going to also access those services via SQL, and we simply extend SQL for Vertica. So when you add the UDx, you get additional syntax that we can provide, and we're going to show you examples of that. You can also integrate that with concepts, like Views within Vertica. So that we can say, let's give a view of Data, that gives the Data in the clear, using the UDx to decrypt that Data, and let's give everybody else, access to the raw Data which is protected. Third parties could be brought in, folks like contractors or folks that aren't vetted, as closely as a security team might do, for internal sensitive Data access, could be given access to the Vertical cluster, without risk of them breaching and going into some area, they're not supposed to take a look at. Vertica has excellent control for access, down even to the column level, which is phenomenal, and really provides you with world class security, around the Vertical solution itself. Secure Data adds another layer of protection, like we're mentioning, so that we can have Data protected in use, Data protected at rest, and then we can have the ability, to share that protected Data throughout the organization. And that's really where Secure Data shines, is the ability to protect that Data on mainframe, on mobile, and open systems, in the cloud, everywhere you want to have that Data move to and from Vertica, then you can have Secure Data, integrated with those endpoints as well. That's an additional solution on top, the Secure Data Plus Vertica solution, that is bundled together today for a sales purpose. But we can also have that conversation with you, about those wider Secure Data use cases, we'd be happy to talk to you about that. Security to the virtual appliance, is a lightweight appliance, sits on something like eight cores, 16 gigs of RAM, 100 gig of disk or 200 gig of disk, really a lightweight appliance, you can have one or many. Most customers have four in production, just for redundancy, they don't need them for scale. But we have some customers with 16 or more in production, because they're running such high volumes of transaction load. They're running a lot of web service transactions, and they're running Vertica as well. So we're going to have those virtual appliances, as co-located around the globe, hooked up to all kinds of systems, like Syslog, LDAP, load balancers, we've got a lot of capability within the appliance, to fit into your enterprise IP landscape. So let me get you directly into the neat, of what does the UDx do. If you're technical and you know SQL, this is probably going to be pretty straightforward to you, you'll see the copy command, used widely in Vertica to get Data into Vertica. So let's try to protect that Data when we're ingesting it. Let's grab it from maybe a CSV file, and put it straight into Vertica, but protected on the way and that's what the UDx does. We have Voltage Secure protectors, an added syntax, like I mentioned, to the Vertica SQL. And that allows us to say, we're going to protect the customer first name, using the parameters of hyper alphanumeric. That's our internal lingo of a format, within Secure Data, this part of our API, the API is require very few inputs. The format is the one, that you as a developer will be supplying, and you'll have different ones for maybe SSN, you'll have different formats for street address, but you can reuse a lot of your formats, across a lot of your PII, PHI Data types. Protecting after ingest is also common. So I've got some Data, that's already been put into a staging area, perhaps I've got a landing zone, a sandbox of some sort, now I want to be able to move that, into a different zone in Vertica, different area of the schema, and I want to have that Data protected. We can do that with the update command, and simply again, you'll notice Voltage Secure protect, nothing too wild there, basically the same syntax. We're going to query unprotected Data. How do we search once I've encrypted all my Data? Well, actually, there's a pretty nifty trick to do so. If you want to be able to query unprotected Data, and we have the search string, like a phone number there in this example, simply call Voltage Secure protect on that, now you'll have the cipher text, and you'll be able to search the stored cipher text. Again, we're just format preserving encrypting the Data, and it's just a string, and we can always compare those strings, using standard syntax and SQL. Using views to decrypt Data, again a powerful concept, in terms of how to make this work, within the Vertica Landscape, when you have a lot of different groups of users. Views are very powerful, to be able to point a BI tool, for instance, business intelligence tools, Cognos, Tableau, etc, might be accessing Data from Vertica with simple queries. Well, let's point them to a view that does the hard work, and uses the Vertical nodes, and its horsepower of CPU and RAM, to actually run that Udx, and do the decryption of the Data in use, temporarily in memory, and then throw that away, so that it can't be breached. That's a nice way to keep your users active and working and going forward, with their Data access and Data analytics, while also keeping the Data Secure in the process. And then we might want to export some Data, and push it out to someone in a clear text manner. We've got a third party, needs to take the tax ID along with some Data, to do some processing, all we need to do is call Voltage Secure Access, again, very similar to the protect call, and you're writing the parameter again, and boom, we have decrypted the Data and used again, the Vertical resources of RAM and CPU and horsepower, to do the work. All we're doing with Voltage Secure Data Appliance, is a real simple little key fetch, across a protected tunnel, that's a tiny atomic transaction, gets done very quick, and you're good to go. This is it in terms of the UDx, you have a couple of calls, and one parameter to pass, everything else is config driven, and really, you're up and running very quickly. We can even do demos and samples of this Vertical Udx, using hosted appliances, that we put up for pre sales purposes. So folks want to get up and get a demo going. We could take that Udx, configure it to point to our, appliance sitting on the internet, and within a couple of minutes, we're up and running with some simple use cases. Of course, for on-prem deployment, or deployment in the cloud, you'll want your own appliance in your own crypto district, you have your own security, but it just shows, that we can easily connect to any appliance, and get this working in a matter of minutes. Let's take a look deeper at the voltage plus Vertica solution, and we'll describe some of the use cases and path to success. First of all your steps to, implementing Data-centric security and Vertica. Want to note there on the left hand side, identify sensitive Data. How do we do this? I have one customer, where they look at me and say, Rich, we know exactly what our sensitive Data is, we develop the schema, it's our own App, we have a customer table, we don't need any help in this. We've got other customers that say, Rich, we have a very complex Database environment, with multiple Databases, multiple schemas, thousands of tables, hundreds of thousands of columns, it's really, really complex help, and we don't know what people have been doing exactly, with some of that Data, We've got various teams that share this resource. There, we do have additional tools, I wanted to give a shout out to another microfocus product, which is called Structured Data Manager. It's a great tool that helps you identify sensitive Data, with some really amazing technology under the hood, that can go into a Vertica repository, scan those tables, take a sample of rows or a full table scan, and give you back some really good reports on, we think this is sensitive, let's go confirm it, and move forward with Data protection. So if you need help on that, we've got the tools to do it. Once you identify that sensitive Data, you're going to want to understand, your Data flows and your use cases. Take a look at what analytics you're doing today. What analytics do you want to do, on sensitive Data in the future? Let's start designing our analytics, to work with sensitive Data, and there's some tips and tricks that we can provide, to help you mitigate, any kind of concerns around performance, or any kind of concerns around rewriting your SQL. As you've noted, you can just simply insert our SQL additions, into your code and you're off and running. You want to install and configure the Udx, and secure Data software plants. Well, the UDx is pretty darn simple. The documentation on Vertica is publicly available, you could see how that works, and what you need to configure it, one file here, and you're ready to go. So that's pretty straightforward to process, either grant some access to the Udx, and that's really up to the customer, because there are many different ways, to handle access control in Vertica, we're going to be flexible to fit within your model, of access control and adding the UDx to your mix. Each customer is a little different there, so you might want to talk with us a little bit about, the best practices for your use cases. But in general, that's going to be up and running in just a minute. The security software plants, hardened Linux appliance today, sits on-prem or in the cloud. And you can deploy that. I've seen it done in 15 minutes, but that's what the real tech you had, access to being able to generate a search, and do all this so that, your being able to set the firewall and all the DNS entries, the basically blocking and tackling of a software appliance, you get that done, corporations can take care of that, in just a couple of weeks, they get it all done, because they have wait waiting on other teams, but the software plants are really fast to get stood up, and they're very simple to administer, with our web based GUI. Then finally, you're going to implement your UDx use cases. Once the software appliance is up and running, we can set authentication methods, we could set up the format that you're going to use in Vertica, and then those two start talking together. And it should be going in dev and test in about half a day, and then you're running toward production, in just a matter of days, in most cases. We've got other customers that say, Hey, this is going to be a bigger migration project for us. We might want to split this up into chunks. Let's do the real sensitive and scary Data, like tax ID first, as our sort of toe in the water approach, and then we'll come back and protect other Data elements. That's one way to slice and dice, and implement your solution in a planned manner. Another way is schema based. Let's take a look at this section of the schema, and implement protection on these Data elements. Now let's take a look at the different schema, and we'll repeat the process, so you can iteratively move forward with your deployment. So what's the added value? When you add full Vertica plus voltage? I want to highlight this distinction because, Vertica contains world class security controls, around their Database. I'm an old time DBA from a different product, competing against Vertica in the past, and I'm really aware of the granular access controls, that are provided within various platforms. Vertica would rank at the very top of the list, in terms of being able to give me very tight control, and a lot of different AWS methods, being able to protect the Data, in a lot of different use cases. So Vertica can handle a lot of your Data protection needs, right out of the box. Voltage Secure Data, as we keep mentioning, adds that defense in-Depth, and it's going to enable those, enterprise wide use cases as well. So first off, I mentioned this, the standard of FF1, that is format preserving encryption, we're the authors of it, we continue to maintain that, and we want to emphasize that customers, really ought to be very, very careful, in terms of choosing a NIST standard, when implementing any kind of encryption, within the organization. So 8 ES was one of the first, and Hallmark, benchmark encryption algorithms, and in 2016, we were added to that mix, as FF1 with CS online. If you search NIST, and Voltage Security, you'll see us right there as the author of the standard, and all the processes that went along with that approval. We have centralized policy for key management, authentication, audit and compliance. We can now see that Vertica selected or fetch the key, to be able to protect some Data at this date and time. We can track that and be able to give you audit, and compliance reporting against that Data. You can move protected Data into and out of Vertica. So if we ingest via Kafka, and just via NiFi and Kafka, ingest on stream sets. There are a variety of different ingestion methods, and streaming methods, that can get Data into Vertica. We can integrate secure Data with all of those components. We're very well suited to integrate, with any Hadoop technology or any big Data technology, as we have API's in a variety of languages, bitness and platforms. So we've got that all out of the box, ready to go for you, if you need it. When you're moving Data out of Vertica, you might move it into an open systems platform, you might move it to the cloud, we can also operate and do the decryption there, you're going to get the same plaintext back, and if you protect Data over in the cloud, and move it into Vertica, you're going to be able to decrypt it in Vertica. That's our cross platform promise. We've been delivering on that for many, many years, and we now have many, many endpoints that do that, in production for the world's largest organization. We're going to preserve your Data format, and referential integrity. So if I protect my social security number today, I can protect another batch of Data tomorrow, and that same ciphertext will be generated, when I put that into Vertica, I can have absolute referential integrity on that Data, to be able to allow for analytics to occur, without even decrypting Data in many cases. And we have decrypt access for authorized users only, with the ability to add LDAP authentication authorization, for UDx users. So you can really have a number of different approaches, and flavors of how you implement voltage within Vertica, but what you're getting is the additional ability, to have that confidence, that we've got the Data protected at rest, even if I have a DBA that's not vetted or someone new, or I don't know where this person is from a third party, and being provided access as a DBA level privilege. They could select star from all day long, and they're going to get ciphertext, they're going to have nothing of any value, and if they want to use the UDF to decrypt it, they're going to be tracked and traced, as to their utilization of that. So it allows us to have that control, and additional layer of security on your sensitive Data. This may be required by regulatory agencies, and it's seeming that we're seeing compliance audits, get more and more strict every year. GDPR was kind of funny, because they said in 2016, hey, this is coming, they said in 2018, it's here, and now they're saying in 2020, hey, we're serious about this, and the fines are mounting. And let's give you some examples to kind of, help you understand, that these regulations are real, the fines are real, and your reputational damage can be significant, if you were to be in breach, of a regulatory compliance requirements. We're finding so many different use cases now, popping up around regional protection of Data. I need to protect this Data so that it cannot go offshore. I need to protect this Data, so that people from another region cannot see it. That's all the kind of capability that we have, within secure Data that we can add to Vertica. We have that broad platform support, and I mentioned NiFi and Kafka, those would be on the left hand side, as we start to ingest Data from applications into Vertica. We can have landing zone approaches, where we provide some automated scripting at an OS level, to be able to protect ETL batch transactions coming in. We could protect within the Vertica UDx, as I mentioned, with the copy command, directly using Vertica. Everything inside that dot dash line, is the Vertical Plus Voltage Secure Data combo, that's sold together as a single package. Additionally, we'd love to talk with you, about the stuff that's outside the dash box, because we have dozens and dozens of endpoints, that could protect and access Data, on many different platforms. And this is where you really start to leverage, some of the extensive power of secure Data, to go across platform to handle your web based apps, to handle apps in the cloud, and to handle all of this at scale, with hundreds of thousands of transactions per second, of format preserving encryption. That may not sound like much, but when you take a look at the algorithm, what we're doing on the mathematics side, when you look at everything that goes into that transaction, to me, that's an amazing accomplishment, that we're trying to reach those kinds of levels of scale, and with Vertica, it scales horizontally. So the more nodes you add, the more power you get, the more throughput you're going to get, from voltage secure Data. I want to highlight the next steps, on how we can continue to move forward. Our secure Data team is available to you, to talk about the landscape, your use cases, your Data. We really love the concept that, we've got so many different organizations out there, using secure Data in so many different and unique ways. We have vehicle manufacturers, who are protecting not just the VIN, not just their customer Data, but in fact they're protecting sensor Data from the vehicles, which is sent over the network, down to the home base every 15 minutes, for every vehicle that's on the road, and every vehicle of this customer of ours, since 2017, has included that capability. So now we're talking about, an additional millions and millions of units coming online, as those cars are sold and distributed, and used by customers. That sensor Data is critical to the customer, and they cannot let that be ex-filled in the clear. So they protect that Data with secure Data, and we have a great track record of being able to meet, a variety of different unique requirements, whether it's IoT, whether it's web based Apps, E-commerce, healthcare, all kinds of different industries, we would love to help move the conversations forward, and we do find that it's really a three party discussion, the customer, secure Data experts in some cases, and the Vertica team. We have great enablement within Vertica team, to be able to explain and present, our secure Data solution to you. But we also have that other ability to add other experts in, to keep that conversation going into a broader perspective, of how can I protect my Data across all my platforms, not just in Vertica. I want to give a shout out to our friends at Vertica Academy. They're building out a great demo and training facilities, to be able to help you learn more about these UDx's, and how they're implemented. The Academy, is a terrific reference and resource for your teams, to be able to learn more, about the solution in a self guided way, and then we'd love to have your feedback on that. How can we help you more? What are the topics you'd like to learn more about? How can we look to the future, in protecting unstructured Data? How can we look to the future, of being able to protect Data at scale? What are the requirements that we need to be meeting? Like I mentioned before, we have publicly available hosted appliance, for demo purposes, that we can make available to you, if you want to PLC this. Reach out to us. We really want to make this accessible to you, and help demystify the concept of encryption, because when you see it as a developer, and you start to get your hands on it and put it to use, you can very quickly see, huh, I could use this in a variety of different cases, and I could use this to protect my Data, without impacting my analytics. Those are some of the really big concerns that folks have, and once we start to get through that learning process, and playing around with it in a PLC way, that we can start to really put it to practice into production, to say, with confidence, we're going to move forward toward Data encryption, and have a very good result, at the end of the day. This is one of the things I find with customers, that's really interesting. Their biggest stress, is not around the timeframe or the resource, it's really around, this is my Data, I have been working on collecting this Data, and making it available in a very high quality way, for many years. This is my job and I'm responsible for this Data, and now you're telling me, you're going to encrypt that Data? It makes me nervous, and that's common, everybody feels that. So we want to have that conversation, and that sort of trial and error process to say, hey, let's get your feet wet with it, and see how you like it in a sandbox environment. Let's now take that into analytics, and take a look at how we can make this, go for a quick 1.0 release, and let's then take a look at, future expansions to that, where we start adding Kafka on the ingest side. We start sending Data off, into other machine learning and analytics platforms, that we might want to utilize outside of Vertica, for certain purposes, in certain industries. Let's take a look at those use cases together, and through that journey, we can really chart a path toward the future, where we can really help you protect that Data, at rest, in use, and keep you safe, from both the hackers and the regulators, and that I think at the end of the day, is really what it's all about, in terms of protecting our Data within Vertica. Keynote Analysis | Cisco Live EU Barcelona 2020

I'm John Furrier, host of the Cube Dave Volante Ecosystem Minimum here all week in Barcelona, kicking off 2020 With the keynote analysis, Cisco just unveiled their looks like their plan for the year and what looks like a future direction of Cisco again. We were here past two years covering Cisco Live. We'll be at the US show this year as well. David Stew Keynote analysis. Let's get into it right away. Mostly you start to still see the messaging Positioning unfolding in front of us is clearly not there yet. A lot of people have their check boxes that rotation David get kicked it off. I mean, when we kicked it off David gentler key executive, really leading the charge here. But this is about Cisco setting the table. Let's get into it. What do you guys think? I thought it was a good keynote. I thought was a little bit lacking in the story, telling what was the thread was no common thread. Heard a lot of little cloud. I heard a lot of sis card, a lot of speeds and feeds. Everyone kind of has their turn, and all the top people were on there. What's your thoughts? >>Well, who is? Cisco was my first thought. Is your kid coming out of college? You hear that keynote, which I agree was good keynote. But I still wouldn't be sure exactly what Cisco does on. And so I think that you're right, that messaging needs to be tightened up. There needs to be a threat. At the same time, we saw some innovation. They sort of double down on the December announcements and talked about that. I really liked the collaboration that that's been a sleepy market zoom change that woke everybody up. And so we saw some interesting features. Their stuff on app d. They made a lot of claims, which I don't know if they're true or not. It seemed like VM Ware could do some of that stuff and new relic and some of the others dynatrace. But Cisco is coming at it from a networking area of strength, and, um so I guess my bottom line is, I still wanna understand what that threat is, and they talked about multi cloud. I really do think that Cisco is in the best position to connect those clouds to on Prem and Hybrid. They've got the data from the network, and they're in the best position to leverage that for value for their customers. Kind of came through, but I think it's my inference, not their claim. I was >>a little surprised. A This third year we've done this show, and usually there's, you know, the new tag line, and they were reusing the bridge to possible and feels still where things are coming together. Francisco, as you and John were saying, some of the products moving together. So it's awesome chatter on Twitter said, Oh, great Inter site and Empty, actually going to integrate and work well together on that integration messages, one that Cisco's highlighting Cisco's always had a really broad ecosystem. They put up the video about like, you know, if you know the Internet and everything you've done, we've been there, and we're going to drive that for the next generation in the collaboration space. It's not the same WebEx that you've known forever heck, you know, we're gonna have Microsoft with teams and WebEx trying to squint through that a little bit and say, Okay, well, Cisco's got a bunch of devices. Is that all it is? Is, you know, being saying great. You know, I've got Cisco Devices and therefore, if I'm you know, teams customer for Microsoft, I can plug into that. It seems like there's a lot of inter networking pieces underneath the covers there because Microsoft driving hard in that space. Zoom as you said Dave, for the quick, easy experience that that came out of Cisco. So a lot of things moving in the collaboration space. But in the hardcore data, says center space workload Optimizer is something that they were focused on. Talk about the new router Jonathan Davidson, who we'll have on the Cube tomorrow, talking about that space. So Cisco's got a very broad portfolio, and John, I think you nailed it. I did not come out of it. A consistent You know who Cisco is. The message for how we're going to partner with in the future. >>The day bring up a good point college kid looks at This is a good way to kind of zoom out of the technical world. Remember, David Gettler is a technical person. He ran engineering. He sees his big marketing word is multi domain. Come on, Multi domain is not a marketing word. It's just it's a technical feature, but >>this is a >>technical show and a lot of their audience here at the show. We are techies, and so it's clear to me that Cisco's brick by brick building the sass ification, the cloud ification of Cisco and this is something. I think they're not yet ready to pull the switch on Dave as to use a sailing analogy as they attack into the marketplace. They got to do a full turn on the boat. I think this is just the progression. I think it's natural to see Cisco spending millions of billions of dollars as we heard cloud defying and creating this subscription business model. The other notable things is you start to see some tell signs from the keynote, a few little things and I picked up out of this that shows that they're kind of going in the right direction. Still a lot more work to do, and the story needs to be up leveled a bit. I totally agree, rather than just speeds and feeds the classic enterprise. But Wendy hit it clearly. Business model is the new killer app, and I think all the things that we've discussed over the past 10 years to past five, in particular with Cloud Native is the business outcomes is what the APS are focused on. And so they're headlining the event with APP application dynamics, which makes sense. But it's not clear enough that the business model is the key to everything, and you're gonna connect businesses what Cisco does. I mean, what a Cisco Date. They connect business that's been their their mission. From day one, they >>got to take that message, bring it >>up with the applications, are driving business model changes and results. And I think that's the thread they're trying to get through and trying to thread the needle. They're they're just not ready. >>See, from an umbrella messaging standpoint, I think that would have been a lot more effective. But some of the things that I liked in the keynote, you know, Wendy Mars did talk about the importance of privacy, how Europe is leading in diversity. So so that is really important. And they also talked about how last decade was all about enabling APS. And this decade is going to be all about enabling APs and to your point, about enabling business. John. They talked a lot about bringing I t an OT together lists, and Tony really made a big point of that. When we walked into The DEV. Net zone, there was all these network engineers looking at an I O T presentation, these air I t guys trying to learn about the edge in OT. And so I think that's a really important message to the collaboration front. You know, some neat, neat features I just wanted to mention. But my understanding is that Microsoft Teams is all about taking its the old Skype business, which has, like, fallen off a cliff because everybody hates Skype and migrating at the team so they can compete more effectively with WebEx and the rest of them. So again, a lot of different parts of Cisco, but I think there was some definite innovation there, and then when I talked about they're December announcements the optics, the silicon one and the software bringing that together, you know, that is going to power service providers for the next 5 10 years, >>we'll do. I want to get your thoughts here because one of the things that we're observing and they've got hit with teams is that they're kind of groping a little bit on areas. Everyone's gonna get their time on stage. I get that. You know, the comment I made yesterday in our pre game day zero analysis was that there needs to be a Tesla of this industry and to completely change the game. So I think Cisco, if they take the business, we're connecting businesses and looking for a business model. Change is we're gonna look for the engine of the of the car of the application of the company and then what it ISS. So Cisco as a company, is the car, the engines were there, the weaknesses. So if you look at Cisco, all they do is talk about the engine and the features of the Pistons and all the technical speeds and feeds. That's great, but at the end of the day it's a new environment on the business front and I think they got to get that kind of conversion and bring that together Because, of course, they have to check the boxes on. Look, we've got a new engine. We've got new clouds modification. This is where it's at, but it's the destination that you're driving to, which is a business model Outcomes. So, you know, under the hood, are they there? So it seems to be they're still trying to get the engine fixed, and then they could roll out >>one of the things when we always look at all of these keynotes is Are they effectively letting customers tell their story? And does that resonate with what they're talking about? For the piece I saw, I only saw two customers. There was a video with Michael Bay, Great special effects. And actually, you know, I thought it kind of resonated because it's like, Okay, you know, I've got 10 locations shooting around the world and you know, there's terror, bits of information. He's like, I don't even know what a terabyte. It sounds like a dinosaur. And of course, all the networking like Ha ha. You know, you do cool exploding stuff, but you don't know what a terabyte is. And then they had Airbus and Dave, you talked about. Listen, Tony got up on stage and look at it and ot they don't play well together and that's we've done research, looking at the challenge of really delivering on I ot it is that schism between I T and OT and I would have loved to hear a little bit more because she said, Oh well, our tools just enable ot to work on anything. It's not that easy. Just >>well, I throw >>those two worlds >>together, key their security, and we're talking about securing critical infrastructure and really, that's a whole new opportunity in realm. I mean, it kind of came through, but But that's the linchpin is really securing that critical infrastructure, whether it's power plants, it roads, all kinds of logistics and a >>lot of one on Dave. I mean, this is the whole point about Cisco's challenges. One from a story standpoint is complex from a technology integration standpoint complex because you got application awareness, which is going down to the network. And then they showed a lot of that, and I thought that was a key highlight that didn't actually come through, but they did present it. They got the clarification story And then they got network automation all those things, as well as five g around the corner. Silicon One is a lot coming >>together. Nailed that, I mean, no doubt, >>a lot coming together. And I think the key is Is that Scott? Harold nailed it. I think we get clearer and the team are right on the money. On terms of the engine is intent based networking. Multi domain. Is that to me means multi cloud and hybrid. Nail that, and you can get those kinds of innovations. And I think Scott Harrell said it. Simplification is key security and inclusive of the cloud that one word to use, he said. We're talking about something that's inclusive of cloud. He really slam Cloud, he said. You know, it's a fancy place. It's Nirvana. But don't forget the intent of having the on premise basically. So I thought that was a nice thread, the three layers of insight security business in I T. But to me it's simple. I think Cisco needs to think differently around how they position themselves, because if they're going to throw WebEx out there and throw out all these analytics and data, they're a data company. They're a data first company, and they have to be a video first company of its five G. And they got to be a virtual first company because the new future workplace is about having those kinds of workloads running those kinds of app set, you know, feed the modern enterprise. And to me, my premise is, if you can automate it, it's not a feature for the modern modern enterprise has. Automation will be critical of everything, and you can't have bloated software running virtual first environment. >>But to your point, Cisco's advantage is that the data is running through the network, so they have visibility on that data. So they are in a very good position to leverage that data for automation and to connect businesses. Networks of data video is killer feature for that. I mean, they really are the only company right now in the business that can do that. >>Yeah, actually, I like the analogy. They said you should think of the network as a sensor. This is what's going to be able to drive your insight and outcomes. It's not just the plumbing anymore, but you know, that's one of the earliest areas where we drove analytics and data out of everything that's going on and set them up for that machine learning and AI world that people are driving toe extract data >>and to your point on cloud. I mean, look it. They know that you sort of reference that the cloud is slowly eating away at their opportunity because I T practitioners will tell you what the more we do in the cloud, the less we're gonna have to spend on our own network year. >>Yeah, but here's the thing that's coming out. And during the SD win section, I was making some comments >>on >>YouTube channel. SD Win is really, to me, a bellwether of how this goes because latency matters. If you're in the Cisco ecosystem, it's late in the late latency. And if the win is the new land, which is my premise than the interactions with security between the routes becomes critical, right? So you have to have that kind of insight. So we look at something like Web experiences on the collaboration side is that product truly defined for that environment? And I think you mentioned Zoom earlier as kind of waking everyone up is they've built a product around latency and around the environment around land, not the land. So WebEx and desktop is not the state of the art. So unless you got an NVIDIA graphics card designed into it and gaming rig, it's gotta be mobile. It's gonna be over a land link for virtual. And I think if the software to bloated, it's not gonna work. And I think that's gonna be an area that Cisco is going to look at and say, Does these products fit this new use case? >>Okay, so let's say three days of coverage, right? We did. Day Zero is actually four days of coverage for us. We got a lot of good guests coming on. A lot of Cisco execs. What >>are you guys looking for? This. Let's go look at the week we had a lot of guests coming on. Dave's do. What are you guys looking for? In terms of analysis? What are you looking to tease out of the show? >>Well, like any of these shows, I'm really trying to look at the substance, trying to understand the announcements that they're making, how real they are and how they map into the customer's view of what it is that they need. I say the collaboration thing is interesting to me. I was really concerned about Cisco. I thought they were just sort of sitting on their laurels. I think they're WebEx install Base is gonna really look hard at these features. If they're in fact, they're available. I want to understand from practitioners and particularly service providers, You know what they think of all this new stuff that's coming out cause it's expensive. But that's a big, big cap ex investment for these guys. And I want understanding the core Cisco business, their their data center business, their networks. They're hyper converged where they stand competitively. And the last thing is the partner ecosystem. You know, we've talked about how they have to walk a fine line between, you know, servicing guys like IBM and Netapp and then also competing with their former great partner in EMC now Dell, EMC, and how they're gonna go forward in the next 10 years. >>Yeah, you touched on the partner ecosystem and service riders. Edge is the next big opportunity for Cisco, and how will they leverage what they're doing to support all of those partners? going forward. Big thing I'm looking for this week as well as a Z you said Dave. Maturation of a lot of the pieces that they add. Where's the substance behind the announcements that they've made? How much of them are table stakes that we see some of the other environs? Collaboration Space John. As you said, Oh, here's these things on the desktop I could do all these things on my phone was so trying to understand what is differentiated >>awesome for me I'm looking for actually, we're in the Dev Net Zone Cube. I'm looking for the developer equations that came up clear, kind of last with Susie Wee. But she put the new world of developers that's going to change the whole CC certification area and on the ecosystem. And for the developers, it's a C I O T. D and a center Inter site an umbrella. Outside of that, I'm gonna be looking for how Cisco is looking at cloud ification of networking network as a service way into Cloud versus internal SD win simplification of the edge security and networking common policy to name a few know talk a WiFi. I mean, WiFi is the preferred connectivity point inside the enterprise. And how does that relate to the whole edge thing? Application awareness. I really jazzed up by app D and I think where they're going with that is really gonna be the front end of that network policy. And that application awareness is critical on finally network automation from See I CD pipeline into analytics and how that relates to Fixed Wireless the five G, which is going to be I o. T. In the subscription based model. So yeah, to me, that's the That's the big picture. I want to dig into those areas >>that you are the things if I May 1 is this gestalt of, um, I'm gonna buy best of breed or am I going to buy from, you know, one throat to choke? And I think Cisco is obviously trying to be the ladder, and I think the last for me. Security, security, security. And how is Cisco going to help practitioners implement the best security possible? >>Yeah. And John John mentioned in the DEV. Net zone. It is that modernization of the workforce, one of the last things in the keynote they want, accelerate the 1st 500 certified definite engineers out there. So what Sisi Iea's had been doing for many decades, many of them in the future are going to be part of that dev net with security being one of the key areas that we focus >>on. And, of course, we're the top story that so far out of the keynote to me, the top story so far is that Cisco is not gonna yield to the big cloud guys, They're brick by brick moving the needle on their rebooting of their products to be cloud enabled for hybrid. And then ultimately, in multi cloud. And I still think the big switches coming. They haven't pull that lever. They haven't yet made a big move, I think a lot more to come. But it's not clear enough that the business model is the key to everything, And I think that's the thread they're trying to get through and trying to thread the needle. But some of the things that I liked in the keynote, you know, Wendy Mars did talk about the importance of privacy, a new environment on the business front and I think they got to get that kind of one of the things when we always look at all of these keynotes is Are they effectively letting customers but But that's the linchpin is really securing that critical infrastructure, They got the clarification story And then they got network automation Nailed that, I mean, no doubt, I think Cisco needs to think differently around how I mean, they really are the only company right now in the business that can do that. It's not just the plumbing the less we're gonna have to spend on our own network year. Steve Mullaney, Aviatrix | AWS re:Invent 2019

I'm John Furrier here instructing the singer from the noise. We have an amazing guest here, the founder of Aviatrix, I mean the CEO of Aviatrix, Steve Mullaney. Welcome to the Cube, thanks for comin' out. >> Thank you, good to see you. >> So first of all, I want to get into your experience, because I think it's notable having you on, because you've been in the industry for years, you're CEO of a multicloud software, a new kind of company. And this is what Andy Jassy was talking about on his Keynote today, that there's new kinds of companies, there's the born in the cloud, then there's enterprises re-borning in the cloud, my word. It's actually pivoting or re-platforming, re-imagining, whatever you want to call it. This is the new game, and if you're not on that side of the street you could be out of business. >> Steve: Yeah, no we're definitely seeing that and I think that's the thing that really got me excited about a year ago, was watching enterprises make that transition and say you know what, the center of gravity has gone from architectures inside the on-prem data center, is now moved to in the cloud. That shift has happened, people talked about it five years ago, but they didn't mean it. Now when you talk to enterprises, they are actually moving into the cloud, not just talking about it. And they're saying that is the center of gravity. And what's interesting to me was, I think even just the tone of Andy Jassy today and what he was talking about was once you define what your architecture is, you push it everywhere. So cloud 1.0 and 2.0 was really more about taking my architecture that was on-prem and pushing it into the cloud. So let me take virtual clients, a virtual router, basically my hardware router, package it up, put it on the cloud. That's not cloud native, it's cloud naive as we talk, right? So the change that's happened is now everybody realizes that the center of gravity is in the cloud, and you start seeing things like outposts. You see things like wavelength, you see things like TGW network Manager and things getting pushed out. The architecture of the cloud, now actually pushing out and extending out into on premises. >> John: Well, I want to give you a prop for a couple things. One is, for the folks watching, and read my post about my interview with Andy Jassy, I said two things in there that I borrowed or stole from Steve. One was cloud native without the T is cloud naive. And T for trust, T for IT, that was clever. And we're going to get into that-- >> Well I stole that from our sales guy Harold Hilderbrand, so you know what? >> John: Harold shout out to you. The second thing that I heard used when we were talking, we were talking about transitions vs. transformations. I think that is so on point because I think that encapsulates what Jassy's saying and what the industry is feeling right now. Transitions are for incremental improvements, transformations are for flipping the script. >> Steve: Right, right. >> This is really happening. Can you share what you mean by transitions vs. transformations? >> Yeah, so when you're in a computing model, there's been really three computing models. There's mainframe, which was 50's or 60's, to 80's or 90's, there's a 20-30 year period where IBM, DAC and so forth. That was the way you did enterprise computing. Then this PC client server thing came along, which was viewed as a toy at the beginning. For print sharing and work groups and people said are you kidding me? PCs, Servers are just PCs with two power supplies. I'm not running my mission critical infrastructure on PCs. But in the 90's with the internet, IP protocol, it's shifted. That became that transformation. So incumbents never win transformations. DEC, IBM and what happens is they're never in the conversation, because it's a transformation. Incumbents always win transitions, so for the last 20 to 30 years, Cisco, great, fantastic company. Very respected company. John Jamers will talk about transitions and talk about he would pat himself on the back, and how they would win market transitions. You're supposed to win a market transition as an incumbent, don't pat yourself on the back. The customers will force you to win the transition because they don't want another leader when you're in that same model. We are now entering that third transformation, this a model of computing change. This is from the top down business transformation Andy was talking about, which is true. You have companies redefining who they are, and they are leveraging cloud technologies to do that. This is not a cost thing, this is not a bottoms up technology thing that IT guys just say ah I want to learn something new. This is top down business transformation, existential threat to the survival of my company kind of stuff, and we need to move fast, and enterprises all move together. That's now happening and transformations, that confusion creates opportunities, because it moves so fast that the legacy vendors just don't have time. They have the innovators dilemma, they can't move to the new way quick enough. >> Yeah and one of the things I want to get your thoughts on and I want to get your reaction to is as we go to all the events in cloud, in this business, we see everything, the one tell sign, for me, is the security market. Security got unbuckled out of IT, in the board conversation. The jewels are on the table, the security, if you get hacked you're out of business. Talk about threats to the business, security is the leading indicator. What's going on in security? They're building their own staff, they're hiring developers in house. They are really changing the game on how they use technology. That's just in one area. You're talking about a complete reset, or reconsideration of everything that Jassy said. >> Everything, yeah, it's the business, right? Your applications are your business, right? And then all the infrastructure underneath that is there to service the applications and the data, that's why it's there. When you talk to different people, and you talk to customers like NBC and CBS, and content people, they're moving to the cloud. They're now having channels that are 100% hosted on AWS for the first time. Why are you doing that? I asked this of CBS. Because we need to move faster. Guess what, they're competing with Netflix and Amazon. They can't do it the old way, they're going to die. So they're moving all of their channels, hundreds of channels to be now cloud enabled. Because it allows them to deliver it in months as opposed to years. >> Your really interesting background, I'll share with the audience, you have a networking background, the old WellFleet became Bay Networks. Early employee at Cisco, then went to early employee at Palo Alto Networks security company. CEO Of Nicira, which is a big pioneer in software-defined networking. Which, at the time, evolved into the crown jewels of AVMWare. >> Yep, in a sense. >> You would say I would agree with that. And now you're on Aviatrix where it's got a multi-cloud abstraction, so you're kind of riding this new wave. So the question I have for you is, I coined the term being reborn in the cloud. Not born in the cloud. People who are born in the cloud, clean sheet of paper, they can scale up. But an enterprise has got to transform. Has to become reborn with cloud architecture. >> Steve: Yes, yes. >> This is a fundamental, almost look in the mirror moment as an enterprise executive, saying are we being reborn? >> Yes. >> How do companies do that? >> So we have a number of companies, enterprise companies, that are 30 year old, 40 year old enterprise software companies that, honestly, were left for dead. Where people thought, they weren't SaaS. They missed out on the whole Benny Hoff SaaS movement and they were on-prem. They had all the features, all the functionality, but they didn't have the delivery model of SaaS. They were hurting, they were going to die. People left them for dead. Now what they are doing is they've reborn themselves, in the cloud. They are pushing themselves in the cloud. Informatic, Variant, Epsolon, Eluysian, Teradata. We've got tens of these companies, that are, have reinvented themselves and now they're actually doing really, really, well. Because they had the functionality that they've always had, but now they have the delivery mechanism. There not SaaS actually, and the customers like that. Because I get my own three or four VPCs, it's my own network, it's not multi-tenant. It's hosted within AWS and now they're just migrating as fast as they can, all of their on-prem applications of customers into AWS and other clouds. >> John: All right, so I want to ask you about multi-cloud. Jassy didn't use the word multi-cloud, the critics are tweeting away on that. But, of course he's going to say multi-cloud, he's the cloud. He's the one cloud, he wants to be. >> Yeah. >> Multi-cloud is a reality. He did point out in my interview, and I think he might have mentioned on stage, that people are picking up primary and secondary. And then it's not 50/50 it's 70/30, 90/10. Whatever the ratio is then just pick one. Amazon gets picked a lot for the leader. What's your vision and how do you see the multi-cloud playing out? As people start becoming more cloud operations based. >> My view, and people, we are in the first pitch in the first inning of this cloud and people say AWS is a 40 billion dollar run rate, how can that be? Because the money has always been and always will be with large enterprise. They are now just starting to move into the cloud. There's trillions of dollars of spend that's coming into public cloud. So, first off, it's very beginning, early days. Second thing is AWS has done incredibly well with the developers and the born in the cloud people. Enterprises, not so much. And, you know what? Microsoft kind of understands enterprises. So I think we're going to be set up for a little bit of battle here, and it's, by no means, over. So I think AWS recognizes that and every single enterprise that I have talked to says I may not be a third, a third, a third across all three of the big clouds. Maybe I'll have one primary, and I think Andy Jassy says that, which I kind of agree with. I think people will have a primary, but I don't think everyone's primary is going to be AWS. I think there's going to be a lot of Azure primaries. And even some Google primaries, probably more, and I think it will be a two horse race for that. But then they're going to use the other clouds because, I was just talking to a customer today. The signature recognition software runs better in Azure. They're an AWS customer, they're moving to Azure for this. Why, because that app runs better in Azure for some reason. I think people, particularly enterprises, will make that decision. >> All right, so I want to get your take on two things, first of all I agree with you. >> I think that's what will happen. >> I would agree with that, so let's just take this scenario. Amazon wins on capabilities, they're constantly adding new stuff everyday. So, if you're a builder, it's the ultimate tool shed for technology. Azure isn't there yet, they're trying to catch up as fast as they can, they're pedaling as fast as they can. But there's a build out level and then there's a consumption level. So there's having all that capability, but also the customer's consumption has to be addressed. Solutions packaging, ease of use. So delivery mechanisms for infrastructure in the cloud. The consumption, how I buy and use, is now a consideration. Or consumer experience or whatever you want to call it. What's your take on those two dynamics? >> I think you'll see, from AWS, I don't know this, but it has to be, because this is what enterprises want. The phrase 'Go Build' is great for an early adopter. You go tell that to an enterprise, here's the power tools, go build your house. They go, I'm going to cut my hand off. I don't want to go build anything, I want to consume. So I think you're going to see them changing their tune a little bit, because the markets evolved, and I think it's caught them a little bit by surprise as well. I think Microsoft, because they know the enterprise, they won't say 'Go Build'. They're going to say 'Come Consume'. And I think that's going to resonate with enterprises. Because, at the end of the day, they don't really want to do that. Now, either way, I think it's going to be a battle. That's where Aviatrix comes into play. We help enterprises, no matter what cloud you're on, across multiple clouds or one, actually consume services. So we abstract away all the details of those native services. >> Well, I would say, if you got to transform, you have to do some building, but it would have to be the easy kit. >> Steve: Yeah, I want the easy button, I mean. >> John: Paint by numbers. >> Yeah. >> John: Self-installing house. So I got your take on that. So you got a lot of buzz in the analyst community around a phrase I've heard you say. >> Steve: Which one is that? >> There's no more food left in the data center. >> Oh, okay, yeah. >> John: And the animals are leaving the data center. >> And that's right. >> John: Food being the supplier. >> The on-prem data center. >> John: The on-prem are money and the animals being the vendors. So if there's no food in the data center, what's happening? What does that mean? >> Steve: They're goin' through, the center of gravity has moved into the cloud, that's where the food is. So you're going to see a lot of cloud naive legacy vendors put cloud on things, right? It's the same crap they had, they're just going to put cloud on it because, like I said, what do animals do when they run out of food? They go find where the food is, right? If people get mad when I say that because data centers are not going away. I know that data centers aren't goin' away, but they're going to get quarantined like mainframes got quarantined. It's going to be an expense area, it's not going to be an investment. And what do you do with an expense? You quarantine it, you cap it, you hopefully keep it flat, or your reduce it. But, sure, the data centers are going to be around for a long time but all their market caps are based on big growth. And, where people are confused is, for the last five years, everybody said we are moving to cloud. But they were talking. So if you look over the last five years, all the people selling the on-prem have done very well. So, clearly, this whole cloud thing was a hoax, right? Because, for five years, you said it was coming and it hasn't, so therefore I'm good. The problem is you're good right up until you're not good and that just happened. >> And that's happening now in your opinion? >> That's happening now and your seeing it in peoples results, publicly. And they're washing it over. They're saying it's a temporary problem. I compensated the field wrong. Bullshit, I know what's going on and, you know what? There's going to be no hiding from that. >> Yeah, and the expansion's going to be in the cloud where the developers are building apps that drive top line. >> Steve: That's where all the investment's going. >> Okay so, there's a couple of major areas developing with the cloud dynamic. The cloud scale and now data tsunami and data scale. Diversity of data and all those things are happening. You can see that in the announcements. Large scale data, the data layer network, data ops, data as code, infrastructure as code, large scale, all that's great. But networking still becomes the fundamental problem. Jassy talked about it on stage. Hops to the network, they got this wavelength thing for 5G. That's really cool. All the kind of important things that are going on, is going on at the network. Same concepts being applied to a new architecture. >> Yeah. >> Your thoughts? >> Exactly right. One of our customers, I forget who it was, said a phrase to me that I love. Again I steal everything John. >> John: I steal from you. >> Yeah, he said the network comes first. I go that is perfect, I'm going to use that. In fact, actually it's on our website. The network comes first. Because when you're building up that infrastructure, in all of computing. Compute network and storage, what's the most important? Network by far. Why, because if the network isn't architected correctly, you're screwed for life. So you've got to get that right. So that's what everybody is doing right now. Is they look and they say strategically, we're going to go build a city. First thing I got to go and do is get the basic infrastructure, and the network comes first. That is the core of my basic infrastructure. If you get that wrong, life is bad for a long long time. That's what's going on right now. >> Okay, so you've had a great career, you got the CEO of Aviatrix going on. You're also looking at startups, you advise, been on boards. What's your view of the startup landscape if you're advising startups to go at this market, this trillion dollar enterprise market, the money's being thrown in the air and the money's in the middle of the table. How do they attack that money, how do they attack the marketplace? >> First thing, number one, you got to be cloud native. You have got to understand the basic native constructs of Azure, Google, AWS. You cannot be just this thing that plops on top of it, you got to be able to programmatically, program that infrastructure and leverage it. Because all of the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent, you want to use that, right. You don't want to have to go recreate that. So that, to me, is number one. And then number two, I think there's a lot of opportunity in the cloud. Everybody thinks AWS will do anything and everything you need in networking. That is a bunch of crap. There is so many limitations that they have for enterprises. Like hundreds of limitations. The beautiful thing with networking is you push one area, and ten other problems happen. So we've got 20 years of things to do to make networking better. So that's what we're going to do. But also at the edges, right? I would say where the interesting thing happens, is the interface between on-prem and cloud. So BGP, IOS, Cisco IOS, all the things that, because it's kind of like the virtual, the physical interface. It's the cloud to on-prem interface. There's still going to be an interface. >> John: You still need plumbing. >> Then there's still going to be an interface. That interface is where a lot of the complexity and friction comes. So whether it's IoT, edge computing type things, or things that we do of bringing that cloud in a seamless, kind of simple, automated way. Bringing on the on-prem into the cloud world in a very seamless way. >> John: So, I'm got to ask you a final question. You came out of retirement. You had the good life on boards, golfing, clipping coupons, going to the beach every day. Now you're the CEO of a company going grinding it out again. A lot of older ageism coming back into the biz. A lot of people who have been in the systems business. >> Steve: Oh yeah. >> A lot of people coming back into the game. Why did you come back, what was the main driver for you to come back out of retirement? >> 'Cause this is a thousand foot wave and it's ten times bigger than what I saw in client server. It's the biggest opportunity of value creation and innovation that I have ever seen and ever will see in my life. What's also fun is every single one of the customers that we are dealing with are all old guys like me. They're all 40s, 50s, 60s, it's the IT guys from 30 years ago that everyone left for dead. Everyone thought, oh it's the developer-led infrastructure, the developers are going to do everything, uh uh. This is IT, IT is coming back and saying thank you very much developer, we got it from here. This is serious business now. This isn't fun and games anymore. We're taking over. >> But it's serious IT, it's reborn IT, it's not the old IT. >> Not the old IT, they want to do it. It's the old guys. But they're enlightened guys and gals and they want to do it in the cloud way, with the simplicity and the automation. But yet I want to bring the functionality, visibility, and control that I had on-prem. I don't want to do it the old way. I want to do it the new way. Guy today I was just talking to a customer who said, I don't want to build my Dad's network. But he's 50 years old, he's my age, you know. And so, but I think that's the key, they're enlightened networking people, yet they have the 30 years of history of understanding the subtleties of BGP and networking. >> This was our chance to hear you in the Cube, we had such a great time, our team's awesome. It's our seventh year doing reInvent, eight years total of this conference. What's your take of Jassy's Keynote this year? Is this an inflection point? Is this one of those moments where you're going to look back and say this was a time that Amazon made a change, or gassed it extra hard? >> I think, my take is, look every year he says amazing things and every year is another step function. But I think this year will go down as the year that people will look back a couple of years from now and say that was the point, that it got serious, like really serious in terms of big enterprises coming in and I think it's going to send a message to the other public clouds, and a message to all the other enterprises that say hey, maybe I'm falling behind. When you see Goldman Sachs and you see banks are laggers to the cloud. They're not early adopters, they're laggers. You see that and you go well, wait a minute, maybe I'm missing out. I think it's going to actually accelerate because he's seeing it, you know. So I think it will go down as a big inflection point. >> John: Steve Mullaney, President and CEO of Aviatrix, who's going to, you'll be on Thursday to go over some of the stuff you guys do as a company. Appreciate the commentary, and great experience riding the wave. How high was that wave? >> A thousand foot. >> Thousand foot wave. We've been riding this wave for years. And I think that's going to resonate with enterprises. Well, I would say, if you got to transform, So you got a lot of buzz in the analyst community and the animals being the vendors. Yeah, and the expansion's going to be in the cloud You can see that in the announcements. said a phrase to me that I love. That is the core of my basic infrastructure. money's in the middle of the table. It's the cloud to on-prem interface. Jim Walker, Vice President of Product Marketing at Cockroach Labs, the custodian/founders of Cockroach Database. Welcome back, good to see you. >> Congratulations on your new role, new gig. Been there for a while? >> Yeah it's been a while since I've seen you, John, I've jumped out of the data space and into Kubernetes, and so, yeah, I landed at Cockroach Labs about a year ago. And having fun. >> It's interesting, the game is still the same, data is still the same as a value proposition, but software. >> Yeah. >> Data is now code, data is looking, interacting with software, data control planes, data layers, data lakes. All this is an evolution of stuff we were talking about back in the open source days at Hortonworks. The data is in motion, data in flight, data at rest, data is continuing to be critical in automation, security, every single app. >> Yeah, it's at the center of the big battle right now, right, there's this like... I just sense there's a larger battle going on for the platform right now, and the platform is being battled out by these large public cloud providers, and it's who can get compute, who can get actually, you know, people, residents in their cloud. Data has always been the centerpiece of that. Data is gravity, if it was on, before it was on-premise, so the battle was in-house at all these people and now it's like how do we get this stuff to move over. >> Yeah, we were talking before you came on camera, it helps we talk online a lot, and have a lot of connected friends in the cloud native space, but now that Cloud 2.0 has arrived, where it's enterprise hybrid, people are starting to get excited about that, you're seeing the re-platformization or refactoring or whatever word you want to use, a modern enterprise architecture, that has the best of cloud native, has the best of what the enterprise used to do with comput-- like mini-computers, whatnot, now packaged up an operating model. This modernization trend is hitting everything, note, developers, security, this is kind of where you're playing right now. Look what Google's done with Spanner database and where that's all come from in these kinds of large-scale data problems. Modernization's here, what's your take on this? >> Yeah, I know this is modernization, but it's stuff we've been doing for a long time. It's like, you know, I was talking to Steve Mulaney earlier, Steve's brilliant, right, and Steve's talking about 1992 we saw this transition to kind of client server. I've never seen anything like this trans... This transition and this modernization is much bigger than any of the other trends that we've been through. Back when we were talking before it was the Hadoop game, and we were talking modern data architecture, how do we actually transform the way we thought about data from these kind of single stovepipes of data into larger data lakes and this sort of thing. That was the beginning. What we're seeing this time though is a massive transformation up and down the stack of which data is one huge, massive piece of that. And as we know, man, data has gravity and it's at the center of this battle again. >> What's your definition of multicloud? We're at the first ever multicloud conference, what is multicloud? >> You know I get asked this a fair amount, so as I was looking for speakers it was like, "Well, what do you mean, a multicloud conference, what does that even mean?" There's a lot of people, multicloud unbelievers. I think we already live in a multicloud world. I think hybrid cloud is just multicloud. I talked to a lot of people through the CFP process for the conference. I had guys who were running edge computing platforms saying, "Talk to me about this", I'm like, "Well, if you look at it, it's just servers, they're just servers that are everywhere" and actually, how do we actually start to attach all this stuff. It's all multicloud, you know what is the cloud but a bunch of different servers that somebody else owns? You may own them, you may not. The challenge is going to be how do we tie all that together? >> Computer history has proven, if anything, heterogeneous environments, multi-vendor. You can go back and talk about, the comment about the client server, I mean, that was a real threat to the mainframe. Internetworking completely changed the game. At that time PCs were exploding in growth, and multi-vendor was a big buzzword. And that was the reality, you had to compete and service multiple vendors in an environment. >> Yeah, and-- >> Multiple cloud is just multiple vendors. >> John, it's called the multicloud conference, and you know my friend Joseph Jacks, I mean Joseph and I have a lot of conversations about things, you know, and he's brilliant in terms of how he thinks about commercial open source and how these things are, and you know I really played around with changing the name of this to the open and independent cloud conference, because that's really what this is about, it's about how do we have a conversation, in the open, about how we open up the cloud? I just thought, I was a little frustrated with some of the conferences I went to because, I think people are talking about this, but it's not lip service, it's just difficult to talk about it in a broader sense. >> Well, I'm really glad you did this because I've been calling multicloud bullshit on theCube for over a year, Stu and I have debates about this, and you know, putting-- >> I watched. >> Okay, of course, but people who know what I mean know that I believe that multicloud reality of "I have Amazon, I got Azure, I mean, hell, if you upgrade Office 365, you have Azure, so that's another cloud. So yes, people have multiple clouds in their environment, but the foundational work is being done now, you guys are doing it, and that's what I was getting at. There's no multiclouding going on, meaning sense of the seamless workload, what HashiCorp is doing, so this is the foundational, what you guys are getting at, in my mind, at least from my perspective, is a foundational conversation around what is the foundation of multicloud look like. >> And John, there is a technical equation here. I think a lot of people will argue the technical merits of what is multicloud, is it even possible to combine networking and security and all, those are really difficult problems to solve. At Cockroach Labs, to solve the database problem, to solve the data problem, to actually have, you know I could spin up a node at Cockroach on this laptop that's sitting next to you and have that participate in a database that spans multiple clouds, that's awesome. But there's a whole other side of this conversation, John, around what does it mean for my skills in my organization, what does it mean for the financial side of things, the legal, and so I think we're all dealing with a lot of these multicloud concepts, we're just not addressing them yet, and so, it's complex. >> Well, first of all, it's fun too, I mean it's complex, but innovation is complex. But here's the thing, Dave and I were joking around Cloud 2.0 and we picked that term, talking about Cloud 2.0, mainly because I remember during Web 2.0, it was just, everyone was just, "What is Web"..., and to create such a debate, so to goof on Web 2.0 we said Cloud 2.0, but what we mean is that it's changing, right? I'll give you an example, I mean to me Cloud 2.0 or multicloud is having a fully horizontal scalable infrastructure, that on-demand, elastic resource with domain specialty application development that takes advantage of data and machine learning for domain-specific context. And then having an addressable data layer on top of that. That to me is multicloud. >> And being able to service your customers no matter where they are. And unfortunately the public copywriters don't have full coverage across the whole planet so we inherently live in this multicloud world. If you wanted to pull an application today, I'm sorry but the world is your audience, there's no segmenting your app to just New York, right? And so how you actually service customers when they're coming at you from all over the planet. It's another challenge that we have. Fortunately I want to add to your Cloud Two conversation, I'm sorry the Cloud 2.0 conversation, that it is a world of hybrid and multi and multi region and single region and it's the evolution between these different kind of flavors of this situation, I feel is the emerging trend that's happening and we're-- >> Well categories are changing, network management becomes observability, configuration management becomes automation, the old database becomes a different kind of database for you, data protection is cyber protection. There's redefining moments here where white spaces are becoming larger categories. I mean, look at observability, probably going public, getting bought. >> John, look at what Google did over the past, like, 10, 12 years and look at the startups that are now out there that are kind of doing this really innovative stuff. We have LightStep here, you know Cockroach is another great example, what the Upbound team is doing, so people have been through this. From a data point of view we couldn't agree more. I can spin up an instance of RDS, Postgres and it's going to be a single instance, it's going to live in one region and that's going to service one bit of a cloud in one corner of the world. The cloud, and this massive distribution of stuff, it changed, you have to inherently start over when you're building these technologies, and that's why the CNCF has come about, right, is there's a fundamentally different approach-- >> CNCF, I love those guys and we're going to go to do CubeCon, but one of the things that I was talking with hashCode co-founder earlier today, he was talking about workflows. I was talking about workloads, and so I think the conversation is still technical and geeky but if you just abstract out all of the nerd talk and geek talk and say, "What's the workflow and what's the workload?", you go, okay, no other buzzwords should be talked. You've got to go onstage, so you've got to go. Everybody watching the Cube, the leader in live tech coverage. This day. One of our coverage of Sisqo Live 2019 from San Diego. I'm Dave a lot with my co host to minimum. Lisa Martin is also here. Kip Compton is the senior vice president of Cisco's Cloud Platform and Solutions, and he's joined by Fabio Gori was the senior director of Cloud Solutions Marketing. Gentlemen, thanks so much for coming on the Cube. >> Thanks. Great to be here having us. >> You're very welcome, Fabio. So, Kip, Let's start with you. I want to start with a customer perspective. People are transforming. Cloud is part of that innovation cocktail, if you will. Absolutely. How would you summarize your customers? Cloud strategies? >> Well, I mean, in one word, I'd say Multi cloud, and it's what I've been saying for some time. Is Custer's air really expanding into the cloud and it really expanding into multiple clouds? And what's driving that is the need to take advantage of the innovation in the economics that are offered in the various clouds, and we sit like to say that they're expanding into the cloud because for the vast majority, their coast of our coasters, they have data centers. They're going to continue to have data centers. Nothing's going to keep running in those data centers now. What's happening is they thought it would be easy to start with everyone here. CEO Chuck likes to talk about, however, and thought they just moved to the cloud like moving to another neighborhood. Everything would be great. Well, when they're multiple clouds, you leaving some stuff on him. All of a sudden, what was supposed to be simple and easy becomes quite complex. >> Yeah, I've often said Well, multi club was kind of a symptom of multi vendor. But what you're saying is, essentially, it's it's becoming horses for courses, the workload matching the workload with the best cloud to solve that problem. >> I think it's a feature not above. I think it's here to stay. >> So how is that informing your strategy is Cisco? >> Well, you know, we're very customer responsive, and we see this problem and we look at how we can solve it and what customs have told us is that they want access to the different innovation in these different clouds and the different economic offers in each of these clouds. But they want to do it with less complexity, and they want to do it with less friction. And there's a bunch of areas where they're not looking for innovation. They don't need things work differently in networking. They want one way for networking to work across the multiple clouds and, frankly, to integrate with their own primus. Well. Likewise, for Security. A lot of Custer's air a little freaked out by the idea that there be different security regimes in every cloud that they use and maybe even different than what they already have on him. So they want that to be connected and to work management an application lifecycle. They're worried about that. They're like they don't want it to be different in every single cloud. A map Dynamics is a great example of an asset here. We got strong feedback for our customers that they needed to be able to measure the application performance in a common way across the environments. When imagine going to your CEO and talking about the performance of applications and having different metrics. 2,000,000,000 where it's hosted. It doesn't make any sense in terms of getting business insights. So I've dynamics is another example of something that Custer's one across all of that. So we really see Cisco's role is bringing all of those common capabilities and really reducing the complexity and friction of multi Cobb, enabling our customers to really take the most advantage possible. Multiple cloud. >> So Fabio kept talked about how moving to cloud is a little bit more complex than moving house from one neighborhood to the other. What are some of the key challenges that you guys are seeing? And how specifically is Cisco helping to ameliorate some of those challenges? >> Well, there are some challenges that are squarely in the camp where we can help. Others are related, and probably they're the toughest in clouds to fundamentally acquisition of talent. Right way can help with our custom off course with our partner ecosystem in this case, but a lot of that is really the culture of the company needs to change, right? We keep talking about develops way, keep talking about what does he mean operating this infrastructure in the cloud. It's a whole different ballgame, right? It's a continues integration, continues. Development is actually moving toe agile, kind of softer. The album models. And, you know, I very often do the analogy or what we've seen a few years ago in the data center space where we so actually, the end off the super specialization, like people on Lino in storage, all innit, working on ly computing. And then we saw the rise of people fundamentally expert in in the entire stack. We're seeing the same in the cloud with the rise of the Cloud Architect. These guys now are the ones they're behind building Cloud Centre of excellence. The issue. If you want guidance, where's the control remains into the other team's right. But this is very, very important. So it's overcoming, overcoming the talent gap and knowing how to deal with that on the bottom of that on the other side, so you get a free economy is technology challenges. For instance, embracing Q Burnett is becomes an embracing open source is a big, big challenge, right? You've gotta be able to master this kind of science if you want and trusting partners like, for instance, ourselves and others that will give you a curated versions of the softer image in life. Very often do customer meetings, and I ask how many how many tools to use in production for your Cuban Embassy plantation? And the answer ranges from 20 to 25. It's crazy, right? So imagine if 12 or three of these stools go away. What are you going to do? So you know, it's it's a whole different ball game really going to go into this kind of world. So Kip, we understand >> today, customers are multi cloud and future. It's going to be multi cloud. Think So. >> How do we make >> sure that multi cloud doesn't become least Domine, Denominator Cloud? Or, you know, you really say All I have is this combination of a bunch of pieces like the old multi vendor. How does multi cloud become more powerful than just the sum of its components? Is a good question, and we've really, I mean, way support a lot of different ways of accessing a cloud, Francisco, because we have such a broad Custer base and our goal is really to support our customers. However, they want to work. But we have made a bet in terms of avoiding the lowest common denominator on DH. Some people look ATT, accessing multiple clouds as sort of laying down one software platform and writing their software to one set of AP eyes that they didn't somehow implement in every cloud. And I think that does tend to get you to lowest common denominator because, you know, if you want to be on the Alexis Smart speaker, you have to be on the Lambda Service at a job. Yes, that's it. It doesn't exist anywhere else. And so if you're trying to create a common layer across so your clouds and that's your approach, you have to give up unique capabilities like that. And almost every consumer brand wants to be our needs to be on that election. Smart speaker. So we actually see it is more taking the functions that are not points of innovation, reducing the friction and leaving our customers with the time and energy to focus on taking advantage of their unique capabilities. And Fabio, you're partnering at Cisco with a number of their providers out there. Where are we with the maturity of all this? We were at the Cube con show and you know you're right. There's a lot of different tools. Simple is not what we're discussing, mostly out that show. So what do we solve today? And what kind of things does Cisco and its partners look to be solving kind of in the next 6 to 12 months? >> Partner? Partnering with this big players is absolutely a company priority for us, for Cisco, and one thing that's important is you, said multi vendor at the beginning. That was an interesting common, because if you think about it, multiple out is really business need, right? You want a hardness, innovation wherever it comes from. But then when you work with a specific provider in your reach, critical mass you want tohave integrations with this with this different providers, and that is the hybrid world. So hybrid is more of a technology need to streamline things like networking or security, or the way you storage because the poor things of this nature so that's three. Liza is a big need, and we'll continue, of course, adding more and more from the standpoint of partnerships every every one of the environments in our customers want to uses of interest for us, right to extend their policies to extend our reach. >> So just following up on that partnership, You guys air cloud agnostic, You don't own your own clouds, right? Not selling that. So you were at Google Cloud next to Europe on stage David Gettler, you've got a relationship with as your you got relationship with a W s. Obviously so talking about the importance of partnerships and specific strategy there in terms of your go to market, >> Well, you know, first, all the partnerships or critical I mean, it's you said we're not trying to move the workload Stark filed. And by the way, a lot of our customers has said that something that they value they see us is one of the biggest, most capable companies on the planet. That still is someone. I got sick and ableto work with them on. What's the right answer for their business? Not trying to move everything to one place and those partnerships a critical. So you're going to see us continue Teo building this partnerships. In fact, it's only day one here. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw some news this week on that. >> We were wondering if we're going to see somebody parachute in, that would be exciting. So why Cisco? Uh, ask each of you guys Maybe maybe, kid, you could You could give us the answer from your perspective and an Aussie. The same question. >> Well, from my perspective, it's based on what our customers tell us that again. You know, the things that were very good at things like networking and security are some of the biggest problems that our customs face in taking advantage of clouds and are some of things that they most want common across clouds. So we have a very natural role in this. I actually think back to the founding of Cisco, if you know the story. But it was Sandy Lerner and Limbo zakat Stanford. Their networks couldn't talk each other. You didn't remember back to the days like deck net and apple talk and all these things. It's hard to even recall because this new thing called peace pipe he obviously took over. That was the beginning of Sisko is building the multi protocol router that let those different islands talk each other. In many ways, Custer's see us doing sort of the same thing or want us to do the same thing in a multi cloud world. >> Well, just aside before I ask you, Fabian, a lot of people think that, you know, the microprocessor revolution killed many computers. IPads. Cisco kind of killed many computers to your point. But, Fabio, anything you would add to the sort of wisest >> guy would say, If you want my three seconds elevator peaches, we make multiple easier and more secure. Multiple this complex. So we definitely make it easier through our software. And we have three big buckets if you want there really compelling for for our customers, the 1st 1 is all of our software. Arsenal around weapon on his cloud center work looked a musician manager that helps last summer in building a unified application management kind of soft or sweet across home Prem and any of the public clouds that we've been talking about. The 2nd 1 is, as you said, we build on our DNA, which is, if you want and you heard Gettler today are multi domain kind of architecture, right, which is incredibly relevant in this case, you are not working in security. Fabric really is important there, and the thirties are ability because we don't compete with any other big players to partner with them and solve problems for our customers. So these three buckets are really, really important that deliver. Ah hi business value to >> our customers if I want to come back to something we're talking about is the Customs said the customers don't want a different security regime for each cloud, right? So it's complicated because, first of all, they're trying to struggle with their own security regime anyway, Right? Right? And that's transforming. What is the right right? Sorry security regime in this cloud here. How is it evolving? >> Well, me, What we're doing is we're bringing tools like Te Trae Shen, which now runs on prim and in the clouds. Things like stealth watch what's runs on permanent cloud and simply bringing them security frameworks that are very effective where I think a very capable of well known security vendor, but bringing them the capability to run the same capabilities in there on prem environments in their data centers as well as a multiple public clouds, and that just eliminates the scenes that hackers could maybe get into. It makes common policy possibles. They going to find policy around an application once and have it apply across Balto environments, which not only is easier for them but eliminates potential mistakes that they might make that might leave things open. Joe Hacker. So for us, it's that simple bringing very effective common frameworks for security across all these >> years. You certainly see the awareness of the security imperative moving beyond the SEC ops team. There's no question about that. It's now board level lines of business are worried about. For their digital transformation was data, but our organizations at the point where there operationalize ing security practices and the like, you know, to the extent that they should be >> well, I mean, I think when you say they should be, there's always room for improvement. Okay, but we're seeing just about all of our customers. I mean, as you said, securities is a sea level, if not a board level discussion and just about all of our customers. It's routinely top first or second concern on a survey when Custer's saw about what's concerning them with the clouds. And so we're seeing them really view, you know, security's foundational to what they're doing. >> I mean, it used to be. This sort of failure equals fire mentality. You somebody cracks through, you're fired. And so nobody talked about it. Now I think people realize, look, bad guys are going to get through. It's how you respond to them. Don't you think about how you using analytics, but yeah. So >> when we start just the >> way you were moving quickly >> towards, well, more or less quickly to a zero trust kind ofwork thie action assist you in this area every since the acquisition ofthe duo is performing exceptionally well. And if you want at the top of the security ecosystem in a multi polar world, you find identity because if you don't know who the user or the thing is, they're trying to use a certain application, you're in trouble because perimeter, all security off course is important. But you know that you're going to be penetrated, right? So it boils down to understanding who's doing what and re mediating a soon as possible. So it's a whole different paradigm >> of a security huge tail. When Francisco it's a business growing 21% a year, it's three more than three times the growth of the company. Overall, which is actually still pretty good. Five or 6%. So security rocketship? >> Yeah, Fabio, Just I noticed before we did the interview here that everybody is wearing the T shirts. The cloud takeover is happening here at the definite zone. So give those of us that you know aren't among the 28,000 you know here at the show. A little bit of what's happening from you're >> gonna do something unusual going, gonna turn that question to keep because he was actually on stage >> the second single. Why don't you just get that off? You know, I think it links back to it. Bobby. Always talking about what talent I mean, obviously the most important thing we bring our customers is the technology. We are a technology company, but so many of our customers were asking us to help them with this talent cap. And I think the growth of definite I mean, we're actually sitting here in the definite zone. It's got its own area Here. It's Sisk alive. It's gotten bigger every single year. Here it's just go live. The growth of definite is a sign of how important talent issue is as well as the new certifications that we announce we expanded our certification program to include software conjuncture with Dev. Net. So now people be able to get professional certifications Francisco not just on networking but on software capabilities and skills. And this is something both our partners, our customers have told us. They're really looking for now in terms of the takeover, it's something fun that the definite crew does. I think you're doing five of them during this week. I was really excited, Suzy. We asked us to be the first Eso es the opportunity. Kick it off. It does include beer. So that's one of the nice things. It includes T shirts, both things that I think are prevalent in the developer community. I'll say, Andi, just have an hour where the focus is on cloud technology. So we got everyone in cloud T shirts, a bunch of the experts for my product enduring teams on hand. We had some special presentations, were just many an hour focused on cloud >> Well, and I love that you're doing that definite zone. We've always been super impressed with this whole notion of infrastructures code. I think I've said many times of all the traditional enterprise cos you know computer companies, if you will hae t companies Cisco has done a better job of anybody than making its infrastructure programmable. We're talking about security before it's critical. If you're still tossing stuff over to the operations team, you're gonna be have exposures. Whereas you guys are in a position now and you talk talent, you're transitioning. You know the role of the C C I. A. And now is becoming essentially a developer of infrastructure is code, and it's a very powerful absolutely. I think we're >> helping our partners and our customers transform. Justus were transforming. I think it's kind of a symbiotic relationship that's super important to us. >> It's also important you think about the balancing act between agility, cost, called security or even data assurance. There. Tradeoffs involved the nobs. You have to turn, but you can. You can you achieve all three, you know, to optimize your business. >> Look, there may always be trade offs, but it's not sort of a zero sum game. All those we sing customers who've automated that through things like C I. D. Move Teo, you know, a different place in a much better place where They're not necessarily making trade offs on security to get better agility if they fully off if they fully automated their deployment chains. So they know that there are no mistakes there. They know that they have the ability to roll out fixes if they need to. They know that they're containers, for instance. They're being scanned from a security perspective, very every time they deploy them. They're actually able to build automated infrastructures that are more agile and more secure so that it's pretty exciting. >> So it involves the automated change management and date assurance talking about containers. That's interesting. Spinning up containers. You want to spend it down frequently. So the bad guys that makes it harder for them to get through. >> You talk about BM sprawling, right? Yeah, right. The Janus sprawling biggest issues out there. And by the way, you know, as you automate this infrastructure, rightly so you mention infrastructures code that you can do the other magic, which is introducing machine learning artificial intelligence. And today they get learn such Gupta gave school. Harold, thank you. Have a terrific demonstration off. You know, finding Rocco's analysis for very, very complex kind of problems that will take forever in the old fashion world. Now, all of a sudden you have the management system. In this case, the nation tells you actually where the problem is, and if you value there that you click a button and instantaneously you deploy, you know, new policies and configuration. That's a dream come true. Literally, you may say, probably we're the last ones to the party in terms of infrastructure players, the industry means. But we're getting there very quickly, and this is a whole new set of possibilities now, >> way talking the cube a lot, and I think it's really relevant for what I'm hearing about your strategies. This cloud is about bringing the cloud operating model to your data wherever your data lives. And that seems to be kind of underscore your your strategy. Absolutely. It's so edge cloud on Prem hybrid, you guys, Your strategy is really to enable customers to bring that operating model wherever they need to. Absolutely right >> that transparency is a big deal. I mean, application anywhere, eating. Did I anywhere? That's a world where we're going to >> guys thoughts. Final thoughts on Sisqo live this year. No, it's only day one gets a customer meetings tonight, but initial impression San Diego >> Well, it's It's a well, it's always great to be in San Diego on DH. It's a great facility, and we know our customers really enjoy San Diego is Well, I think we'll have a great customer appreciation event on Wednesday night. Um, but, you know, I was struck. Uh, you just have to the keynote. I mean, the world solutions was buzzing, and there seems to be is always a lot of energy. It's just go live. But somehow so far this season, maybe even a little bit more energy. I know we've got a number of announcements coming this week across a bunch different areas, including clouds. So we're excited for next few days. >> Well, you got the double whammy first half. We were in February when Barcelona guys don't waste any time. You come right back. And June, your final thoughts value. >> Oh, it's just so exciting to speak with customers and partners. Over here, you can touch their excitement. People love to come together and get old.
