My name is Dave Volonte and I'm your host. You know, the cloud is evolving like the universe is expanding at an accelerated pace. No longer is the cloud. Just a remote set of services, you know, somewhere up there. No, the cloud, it's extending to on premises. Data centers are reaching into the cloud through adjacent locations. Clouds are being connected together to each other and eventually they're gonna stretch to the edge and the far edge workloads, location latency, local laws and economics will define the value customers can extract from this new cloud model which unifies the operating experience independent of location. Cloud is moving rapidly from a spare capacity slash infrastructure resource to a platform for application innovation. Now, the challenge is how to make this new cloud simple, secure, agile and programmable. Oh and it has to be cloud agnostic. Now, the real opportunity for customers is to tap into a layer across clouds and data centers that abstracts the underlying complexity of the respective clouds and locations. And it's got to accommodate both mission critical workloads as well as general purpose applications across the spectrum cost, effectively enabling simplicity with minimal labor costs requires infrastructure i. E. Hardware, software, tooling, machine intelligence, AI and partnerships within an ecosystem. It's kind of accommodate a variety of application deployment models like serverless and containers and support for traditional work on VMS. By the way, it also requires a roadmap that will take us well into the next decade because the next 10 years they will not be like the last So why are we here? Well, the cube is covering Cisco's announcements today that connect next generation compute shared memory, intelligent networking and storage resource pools, bringing automation, visibility, application assurance and security to this new decentralized cloud. Now, of course in today's world you wouldn't be considered modern without supporting containers ai and operational tooling that is demanded by forward thinking practitioners. Good to see you. Welcome. >>Good to see you as well. Thank you Dave and pleasure to be here. >>So in 2020 we kind of had to redefine the notion of agility when it came to digital business or you know organizations, they had to rethink their concept of agility and business resilience. What are you seeing in terms of how companies are thinking about their operations in this sort of new abnormal context? >>Yeah, I think that's a great question. I think what what we're seeing is that pretty much the application is the center of the universe. And if you think about it, the application is actually driving brand recognition and the brand experience and the brand value. So the example I like to give is think about a banking app uh recovered that did everything that you would expect it to do. But if you wanted to withdraw cash from your bank you would actually have to go to the ATM and punch in some numbers and then look at your screen and go through a process and then finally withdraw cash. Think about what that would have, what what that would do in a post pandemic era where people are trying to go contact less. And so in a situation like this, the digitization efforts that all of these companies are going through and and the modernization of the automation is what is driving brand recognition, brand trust and brand experience. >>Yeah. So I was gonna ask you when I heard you say that, I was gonna say well, but hasn't it always been about the application, but it's different now, isn't it? So I wonder if you talk more about how the application is experience is changing. Yes. As a result of this new digital mandate. But how should organizations think about optimizing those experiences in this new world? >>Absolutely. And I think, yes, it's always been about the application, but it's becoming the center of the universe right now because all interactions with customers and consumers and even businesses are happening through that application. So if the application is unreliable or if the application is not available is untrusted insecure, uh, there's a problem. There's a problem with the brand, with the company and the trust that consumers and customers have with our company. So if you think about an application developer, the weight he or she is carrying on their shoulders is tremendous because you're thinking about rolling features quickly to be competitive. That's the only way to be competitive in this world. You need to think about availability and resiliency. Like you pointed out and experience, you need to think about security and trust. Am I as a customer or consumer willing to put my data in that application? So velocity, availability, Security and trust and all of that depends on the developer. So the experience, the security, the trust, the feature, velocity is what is driving the brand experience now. >>So are those two tensions that say agility and trust, you know, Zero Trust used to be a buzzword now it's a mandate. But are those two vectors counter posed? Can they be merged into one and not affect each other? Does the question makes sense? Right? Security usually handcuffs my speed. But how do you address that? >>Yeah that's a great question. And I think if you think about it today that's the way things are. And if you think about this developer all they want to do is run fast because they want to build those features out and they're going to pick and choose a piece and services that matter to them and build up their app and they want the complexities of the infrastructure and security and trust to be handled by somebody else is not that they don't care about it but they want that abstraction so that is handled by somebody else. And typically within an organization we've seen in the past where this friction between Netapp Sec ops I. T. Tops and and the cloud platform Teams and the developer on one side and these these frictions and these meetings and toil actually take a toll on the developer and that's why companies and apps and developers are not as agile as they would like to be. So I think but it doesn't have to be that way. So I think if there was something that would allow a developer to pick and choose, discover the apis that they would like to use connect those api is in a very simple manner and then be able to scale them out and be able to secure them and in fact not just secure them during the run time when it's deployed. We're right off the back when the fire up that I'd and start developing the application. Wouldn't that be nice? And as you do that, there is a smooth transition between that discovery connectivity and ease of consumption and security with the idea cops. Netapp psych ops teams and see source to ensure that they are not doing something that the organization won't allow them to do in a very seamless manner. >>I want to go back and talk about security but I want to add another complexity before we do that. So for a lot of organizations in the public cloud became a staple of keeping the lights on during the pandemic but it brings new complexities and differences in terms of latency security, which I want to come back to deployment models etcetera. So what are some of the specific networking challenges that you've seen with the cloud native architecture is how are you addressing those? >>Yeah. In fact, if you think about cloud, to me that is a that is a different way of seeing a distributed system. And if you think about a distributed system, what is at the center of the distributed system is the network. So my my favorite comment here is that the network is the wrong time for all distribute systems and modern applications. And that is true because if you think about where things are today, like you said, there's there's cloud assets that a developer might use in the banking example that I gave earlier. I mean if you want to build a contact less app so that you get verified, a customer gets verified on the app. They walk over to the ATM and they were broadcast without touching that ATM. In that kind of an example, you're touching the mobile Rus, let's say U S A P is you're touching cloud API is where the back end might sit. You're touching on primary PS maybe it's an oracle database or a mainframe even where transactional data exists. You're touching branch pipes were the team actually exists and the need for consistency when you withdraw cash and you're carrying all of this and in fact there might be customer data sitting in salesforce somewhere. So it's cloud API is a song premise branch. It's ass is mobile and you need to bring all of these things together and over time you will see more and more of these API is coming from various as providers. So it's not just cloud providers but saas providers that the developer has to use. And so this complexity is very, very real. And this complexity is across the wide open internet. So the application is built across this wide open internet. So the problems of discovery ability, the problems of being able to simply connect these apis and manage the data flow across these apis. The problems of consistency of policy and consumption because all of these areas have their own nuances and what they mean, what the arguments mean and what the A. P. I. Actually means. How do you make it consistent and easy for the developer? That is the networking problem. And that is a problem of building out this network, making traffic engineering easy, making policy easy, making scale out, scale down easy, all of that our networking problems. And so we are solving those problems uh Francisco. >>Yeah the internet is the new private network but it's not so private. So I want to go back to security. I often say that the security model of building a moat, you dig the moat, you get the hardened castle that's just outdated now that the queen is left her castle, I always say it's dangerous out there. And the point is you touched on this, it's it's a huge decentralized system and with distributed apps and data, that notion of perimeter security, it's just no longer valid. So I wonder if you could talk more about how you're thinking about this problem and you definitely address some of that in your earlier comments. But what are you specifically doing to address this and how do you see it evolving? >>Yeah, I mean, that's that's a very important point. I mean, I think if you think about again the wide open internet being the wrong time for all modern applications, what is perimeter security in this uh in this new world? I mean, it's to me it boils down to securing an API because again, going with that running example of this contact lists cash withdrawal feature for a bank, the ap wherever it's it's entre branch SAs cloud, IOS android doesn't matter that FBI is your new security perimeter. And the data object that is trying to access is also the new security perimeter. So if you can secure ap to ap communication and P two data object communication, you should be good. So that is the new frontier. But guess what software is buggy? Everybody's software not saying Cisco software, everybody's Softwares buggy. Uh software is buggy, humans are not reliable and so things mature, things change, things evolve over time. So there needs to be defense in depth. So you need to secure at the API layer had the data object layer, but you also need to secure at every layer below it so that you have good defense and depth if any layer in between is not working out properly. So for us that means ensuring ap to ap communication, not just during long time when the app has been deployed and is running, but during deployment and also during the development life cycle. So as soon as the developer launches an ID, they should be able to figure out that this api is security uses reputable, it has compliant, it is compliant to my to my organization's needs because it is hosted, let's say from Germany and my organization wants appears to be used only if they are being hosted out of Germany so compliance needs and and security needs and reputation. Is it available all the time? Is it secure? And being able to provide that feedback all the time between the security teams and the developer teams in a very seamless real time manner. Yes, again, that's something that we're trying to solve through some of the services that we're trying to produce in san Francisco. >>Yeah, I mean those that layered approach that you're talking about is critical because every layer has, you know, some vulnerability. And so you you've got to protect that with some depth in terms of thinking about security, how should we think about where where Cisco's primary value add is, I mean as parts of the interview has a great security business is growing business, Is it your intention to to to to add value across the entire value chain? I mean obviously you can't do everything so you've got a partner but so has the we think about Cisco's role over the next I'm thinking longer term over the over the next decade. >>Yeah, I mean I think so, we do come in with good strength from the runtime side of the house. So if you think about the security aspects that we haven't played today, uh there's a significant set of assets that we have around user security around around uh with with do and password less. We have significant assets in runtime security. I mean, the entire portfolio that Cisco brings to the table is around one time security, the secure X aspects around posture and policy that will bring to the table. And as you see, Cisco evolve over time, you will see us shifting left. I mean, I know it's an overused term, but that is where security is moving towards. And so that is where api security and data security are moving towards. So learning what we have during runtime because again, runtime is where you learn what's available and that's where you can apply all of the M. L. And I models to figure out what works what doesn't taking those learnings, Taking those catalogs, taking that reputation database and moving it into the deployment and development life cycle and making sure that that's part of that entire they have to deploy to runtime chain is what you will see. Dave to be here. >>Katie, let's talk about cloud you And I last time we're face to face was in Barcelona where we love talking about cloud and I always say to people look, Cisco is not a hyper Scaler, but the big public cloud players, they're like giving you a gift. They spent almost actually over $100 billion last year on Capex. The big four. So you can build on that infrastructure. Cisco is all about hybrid cloud. So help us understand the strategy. There may be how you can leverage that build out and importantly what a customer is telling you they want out of hybrid cloud. >>Yeah, no that's that's that's a perfect question to start with. Dave. So yes. So the hybrid hyper scholars have invested heavily building out their assets. There's a great lot of innovation coming from that space. Um There's also a great innovation set of innovation coming from open source and and that's another source of uh a gift. In fact the I. T. Community. But when I look at my customers they're saying well how do I in the context of my business implement a strategy that takes into consideration everything that I have to manage um in terms of my contemporary work clothes, in terms of my legacy, in terms of everything my developer community wants to do on DEVOPS and really harnessed that innovation that's built in the public cloud, that built an open source that built internally to me, and that naturally leads them down the path of a hybrid cloud strategy. And Siskel's mission is to provide for that imperative, the simplest more power, more powerful platform to deliver hybrid cloud and that platform. Uh It's inter site we've been investing in. Inner side, it's a it's a SAS um service um inner side delivers to them that bridge between their estates of today that were closer today, the need for them to be guardians of enterprise grade resiliency with the agility uh that's needed for the future. The embracing of cloud. Native of new paradigms of deVOPS models, the embracing of innovation coming from public cloud and an open source and bridging those two is what inner side has been doing. That's kind of that's kind of the crux of our strategy. Of course we have the entire portfolio behind it to support any, any version of that, whether that is on prem in the cloud, hybrid, cloud, multi cloud and so forth. >>But but if I understand it correctly from what I heard earlier today, the inter site is really a linchpin of that strategy, is it not? >>It really is and may take a second to totally familiarize those who don't know inner side with what it is. We started building this platform quite a few years back and we we built a ground up to be an immensely scalable SAs, super simple hybrid cloud platform and it's a platform that provides a slew of service is inherently and then on top of that there are suites of services, the sweets of services that are tied to infrastructure, automation. Cisco, as well as Cisco partners. The streets of services that have nothing to do with Cisco um products from a hardware perspective. And it's got to do with more cloud orchestration and cloud native and inner side and its suite of services um continue to kind of increase in pace and velocity of delivery video. Just over the last two quarters we've announced a whole number of things will go a little bit deeper into some of those but they span everything from infrastructure automation to kubernetes and delivering community than service to workload optimization and having visibility into your cloud estate. How much it's costing into your on premise state into your work clothes and how they're performing. It's got integrations with other tooling with both Cisco Abdi uh as well as non Cisco um, assets and then and then it's got a whole slew of capabilities around orchestration because at the end of the day, the job of it is to deliver something that works and works at scale that you can monitor and make sure is resilient and that includes that. That includes a workflow and ability to say, you know, do this and do this and do this. Or it includes other ways of automation, like infrastructure as code and so forth. So it includes self service that so that expand that. But inside the world's simplest hybrid cloud platform, rapidly evolving rapidly delivering new services. And uh we'll talk about some more of those day. >>Great, thank you, Katie VJ. Let's bring you into the discussion. You guys recently made an announcement with the ASCIi corp. I was stoked because even though it seemed like a long time ago, pre covid, I mean in my predictions post, I said, ha, she was a name to watch our data partners. Et are you look at the survey data and they really have become mainstream? You know, particularly we think very important in the whole multi cloud discussion. And as well, they're attractive to customers. They have open source offerings. You can very easily experiment. Smaller organizations can take advantage. But if you want to upgrade to enterprise features like clustering or whatever, you can plug right in. Not a big complicated migration. So a very, very compelling story there. Why is this important? Why is this partnership important to Cisco's customers? Mhm. >>Absolutely. When the spot on every single thing that you said, let me just start by paraphrasing what ambition statement is in the cloud and computer group. Right ambition statement is to enable a cloud operating model for hybrid cloud. And what we mean by that is the ability to have extreme amounts of automation orchestration and observe ability across your hybrid cloud idea operations now. Uh So developers and applications team get a great amount of agility in public clouds and we're on a mission to bring that kind of agility and automation to the private cloud and to the data centers and inter site is a quickie platform and lynchpin to enable that kind of operations. Uh, Cloud like operations in the in the private clouds and the key uh As you rightly said, harsher car is the, you know, they were the inventors of the concept of infrastructure at school and in terra form, they have the world's number one infrastructure as code platform. So it became a natural partnership for Cisco to enter into a technology partnership with harsher card to integrate inter site with hardship cops, terra form to bring the benefits of infrastructure as code to the to hybrid cloud operations. And we've entered into a very tight integration and uh partnership where we allow developers devops teams and infrastructure or administrators to allow the use of infrastructure as code in a SAS delivered manner for both public and private club. So it's a very unique partnership and a unique integration that allows the benefits of cloud managed i E C. To be delivered to hybrid cloud operations. And we've been very happy and proud to be partnering with Russian government shutdown. >>Yeah, Terra form gets very high marks from customers. The a lot of value there. The inner side integration adds to that value. Let's stay on cloud native for a minute. We all talk about cloud native cady was sort of mentioning before you got the the core apps, uh you want to protect those, make sure their enterprise create but they gotta be cool as well for developers. You're connecting to other apps in the cloud or wherever. How are you guys thinking about this? Cloud native trend? What other movies are you making in this regard? >>I mean cloud native is there is one of the paramount I. D. Trends of today and we're seeing massive amounts of adoption of cloud native architecture in all modern applications. Now, Cloud Native has become synonymous with kubernetes these days and communities has emerged as a de facto cloud native platform for modern cloud native app development. Now, what Cisco has done is we have created a brand new SAs delivered kubernetes service that is integrated with inter site, we call it the inter site community service for A. Ks. And this just geared a little over one month ago. Now, what interstate kubernetes service does is it delivers a cloud managed and cloud delivered kubernetes service that can be deployed on any supported target infrastructure. It could be a Cisco infrastructure, it could be a third party infrastructure or it could even be public club. But think of it as kubernetes anywhere delivered as says, managed from inside. It's a very powerful capability that we've just released into inter site to enable the power of communities and clog native to be used to be used anywhere. But today we made a very important aspect because we are today announced the brand new Cisco service mess manager, the Cisco service mesh manager, which is available as an extension to the KS are doing decide basically we see service measures as being the future of networking right in the past we had layer to networking and layer three networking and now with service measures, application networking and layer seven networking is the next frontier of, of networking. But you need to think about networking for the application age very differently how it is managed, how it is deployed. It needs to be ready, developer friendly and developer centric. And so what we've done is we've built out an application networking strategy and built out the service match manager as a very simple way to deliver application networking through the consumers, like like developers and application teams. This is built on an acquisition that Cisco made recently of Banzai Cloud and we've taken the assets of Banzai Cloud and deliver the Cisco service mesh manager as an extension to KS. That brings the promise of future networking and modern networking to application and development gives >>God thank you. BJ. And so Katie, let's let's let's wrap this up. I mean, there was a lot in this announcement today, a lot of themes around openness, heterogeneity and a lot of functionality and value. Give us your final thoughts. >>Absolutely. So, couple of things to close on, first of all, um Inner side is the simplest, most powerful hybrid cloud platform out there. It enables that that cloud operating model that VJ talked about, but enables that across cloud. So it's sad, it's relatively easy to get into it and give it a spin so that I'd highly encouraged anybody who's not familiar with it to try it out and anybody who is familiar with it to look at it again, because they're probably services in there that you didn't notice or didn't know last time you looked at it because we're moving so fast. So that's the first thing. The second thing I close with is um, we've been talking about this bridge that's kind of bridging, bridging uh your your on prem your open source, your cloud estates. And it's so important to to make that mental leap because uh in past generation, we used to talk about integrating technologies together and then with public cloud, we started talking about move to public cloud, but it's really how do we integrate, how do we integrate all of that innovation that's coming from the hyper scale, is everything they're doing to innovate superfast, All of that innovation is coming from open source, all of that innovation that's coming from from companies around the world, including Cisco, How do we integrate that to deliver an outcome? Because at the end of the day, if you're a cloud of Steam, if you're an idea of Steam, your job is to deliver an outcome and our mission is to make it super simple for you to do that. That's the mission we're on and we're hoping that everybody that's excited as we are about how simple we made that. >>Great, thank you a lot in this announcement today, appreciate you guys coming back on and help us unpack you know, some of the details. And James Leach is the director of business development for U. C. S. At the Cisco as well. We're gonna talk about computing in the age of hybrid cloud. Welcome gentlemen. Great to see you. >>Thank you. >>Thank you because let's start with you and talk about a little bit about computing architectures. We know that they're evolving. They're supporting new data intensive and other workloads especially as high performance workload requirements. What's this guy's point of view on all this? I mean specifically interested in your thoughts on fabrics. I mean it's kind of your wheelhouse, you've got accelerators. What are the workloads that are driving these evolving technologies and how how is it impacting customers? What are you seeing? >>Sure. First of all, very excited to be here today. You're absolutely right. The pace of innovation and foundational platform ingredients have just been phenomenal in recent years. The fabric that's writers that drives the processing power, the Golden city all have been evolving just an amazing place and the peace will only pick up further. But ultimately it is all about applications and the way applications leverage those innovations. And we do see applications evolving quite rapidly. The new classes of applications are evolving to absorb those innovations and deliver much better business values. Very, very exciting time step. We're talking about the impact on the customers. Well, these innovations have helped them very positively. We do see significant challenges in the data center with the point product based approach of delivering these platforms, innovations to the applications. What has happened is uh, these innovations today are being packaged as point point products to meet the needs of a specific application and as you know, the different applications have no different needs. Some applications need more to abuse, others need more memory, yet others need, you know, more course, something different kinds of fabrics. As a result, if you walk into a data center today, it is very common to see many different point products in the data center. This creates a manageability challenge. Imagine the aspect of managing, you know, several different form factors want you to you purpose built servers. The variety of, you know, a blade form factor, you know, this reminds me of the situation we had before smartphones arrived. You remember the days when you when we used to have a GPS device for navigation system, a cool music device for listening to the music. A phone device for making a call camera for taking the photos right? And we were all excited about it. It's when a smart phones the right that we realized all those cool innovations could be delivered in a much simpler, much convenient and easy to consume through one device. And you know, I could uh, that could completely transform our experience. So we see the customers were benefiting from these innovations to have a way to consume those things in a much more simplistic way than they are able to go to that. >>And I like to look, it's always been about the applications. But to your point, the applications are now moving in a much faster pace. The the customer experience is expectation is way escalated. And when you combine all these, I love your analogy there because because when you combine all these capabilities, it allows us to develop new Applications, new capabilities, new customer experiences. So that's that I always say the next 10 years, they ain't gonna be like the last James Public Cloud obviously is heavily influencing compute design and and and customer operating models. You know, it's funny when the public cloud first hit the market, everyone we were swooning about low cost standard off the shelf servers in storage devices, but it quickly became obvious that customers needed more. So I wonder if you could comment on this. How are the trends that we've seen from the hyper scale, Is how are they filtering into on prem infrastructure and maybe, you know, maybe there's some differences there as well that you could address. >>Absolutely. So I'd say, first of all, quite frankly, you know, public cloud has completely changed the expectations of how our customers want to consume, compute, right? So customers, especially in a public cloud environment, they've gotten used to or, you know, come to accept that they should consume from the application out, right? They want a very application focused view, a services focused view of the world. They don't want to think about infrastructure, right? They want to think about their application, they wanna move outward, Right? So this means that the infrastructure basically has to meet the application where it lives. So what that means for us is that, you know, we're taking a different approach. We're we've decided that we're not going to chase this single pane of glass view of the world, which, frankly, our customers don't want, they don't want a single pane of glass. What they want is a single operating model. They want an operating model that's similar to what they can get at the public with the public cloud, but they wanted across all of their cloud options they wanted across private cloud across hybrid cloud options as well. So what that means is they don't want to just consume infrastructure services. They want all of their cloud services from this operating model. So that means that they may want to consume infrastructure services for automation Orchestration, but they also need kubernetes services. They also need virtualization services, They may need terror form workload optimization. All of these services have to be available, um, from within the operating model, a consistent operating model. Right? So it doesn't matter whether you're talking about private cloud, hybrid cloud anywhere where the application lives. It doesn't matter what matters is that we have a consistent model that we think about it from the application out. And frankly, I'd say this has been the stumbling block for private cloud. Private cloud is hard, right. This is why it hasn't been really solved yet. This is why we had to take a brand new approach. And frankly, it's why we're super excited about X series and inter site as that operating model that fits the hybrid cloud better than anything else we've seen >>is acute. First, first time technology vendor has ever said it's not about a single pane of glass because I've been hearing for decades, we're gonna deliver a single pane of glass is going to be seamless and it never happens. It's like a single version of the truth. It's aspirational and, and it's just not reality. So can we stay in the X series for a minute James? Uh, maybe in this context, but in the launch that we saw today was like a fire hose of announcements. So how does the X series fit into the strategy with inter site and hybrid cloud and this operating model that you're talking about? >>Right. So I think it goes hand in hand, right. Um the two pieces go together very well. So we have uh, you know, this idea of a single operating model that is definitely something that our customers demand, right? It's what we have to have, but at the same time we need to solve the problems of the cost was talking about before we need a single infrastructure to go along with that single operating model. So no longer do we need to have silos within the infrastructure that give us different operating models are different sets of benefits when you want infrastructure that can kind of do all of those configurations, all those applications. And then, you know, the operating model is very important because that's where we abstract the complexity that could come with just throwing all that technology at the infrastructure so that, you know, this is, you know, the way that we think about is the data center is not centered right? It's no longer centered applications live everywhere. Infrastructure lives everywhere. And you know, we need to have that consistent operating model but we need to do things within the infrastructure as well to take full advantage. Right? So we want all the sas benefits um, of a Ci CD model of, you know, the inter site can bring, we want all that that proactive recommendation engine with the power of A I behind it. We want the connected support experience went all of that. They want to do it across the single infrastructure and we think that that's how they tie together, that's why one or the other doesn't really solve the problem. But both together, that's why we're here. That's why we're super excited. >>So Vegas, I make you laugh a little bit when I was an analyst at I D C, I was deep in infrastructure and then when I left I was doing, I was working with application development heads and like you said, uh infrastructure, it was just a, you know, roadblock but but so the target speakers with Cisco announced UCS a decade ago, I totally missed it. I didn't understand it. I thought it was Cisco getting into the traditional server business and it wasn't until I dug in then I realized that your vision was really to transform infrastructure, deployment and management and change them all. I was like, okay, I got that wrong uh but but so let's talk about the the ecosystem and the joint development efforts that are going on there, X series, how does it fit into this, this converged infrastructure business that you've, you've built and grown with partners, you got storage partners like Netapp and Pure, you've got i SV partners in the ecosystem. We see cohesive, he has been a while since we we hung out with all these companies at the Cisco live hopefully next year, but tell us what's happening in that regard. >>Absolutely, I'm looking forward to seeing you in the Cisco live next year. You know, they have absolutely you brought up a very good point. You see this is about the ecosystem that it brings together, it's about making our customers bring up the entire infrastructure from the core foundational hardware all the way to the application level so that they can, you know, go off and running pretty quick. The converse infrastructure has been one of the corners 2.5 hour of the strategy, as you pointed out in the last decade. And and and I'm I'm very glad to share that converse infrastructure continues to be a very popular architecture for several enterprise applications. Seven today, in fact, it is the preferred architecture for mission critical applications where performance resiliency latency are the critical requirements there almost a de facto standards for large scale deployments of virtualized and business critical data bases and so forth with X series with our partnerships with our Stories partners. Those architectures will absolutely continue and will get better. But in addition as a hybrid cloud world, so we are now bringing in the benefits of canvas in infrastructure uh to the world of hybrid cloud will be supporting the hybrid cloud applications now with the CIA infrastructure that we have built together with our strong partnership with the Stories partners to deliver the same benefits to the new ways applications as well. >>Yeah, that's what customers want. They want that cloud operating model. Right, go ahead please. >>I was going to say, you know, the CIA model will continue to thrive. It will transition uh it will expand the use cases now for the new use cases that were beginning to, you know, say they've absolutely >>great thank you for that. And James uh have said earlier today, we heard this huge announcement, um a lot of lot of parts to it and we heard Katie talk about this initiative is it's really computing built for the next decade. I mean I like that because it shows some vision and you've got a road map that you've thought through the coming changes in workloads and infrastructure management and and some of the technology that you can take advantage of beyond just uh, you know, one or two product cycles. So, but I want to understand what you've done here specifically that you feel differentiates you from other competitive architectures in the industry. >>Sure. You know that's a great question. Number one. Number two, um I'm frankly a little bit concerned at times for for customers in general for our customers customers in general because if you look at what's in the market, right, these rinse and repeat systems that were effectively just rehashes of the same old design, right? That we've seen since before 2000 and nine when we brought you C. S to market these are what we're seeing over and over and over again. That's that's not really going to work anymore frankly. And I think that people are getting lulled into a false sense of security by seeing those things continually put in the market. We rethought this from the ground up because frankly future proofing starts now, right? If you're not doing it right today, future proofing isn't even on your radar because you're not even you're not even today proved. So we re thought the entire chassis, the entire architecture from the ground up. Okay. If you look at other vendors, if you look at other solutions in the market, what you'll see is things like management inside the chassis. That's a great example, daisy chaining them together >>like who >>needs that? Who wants that? Like that kind of complexity is first of all, it's ridiculous. Um, second of all, um, if you want to manage across clouds, you have to do it from the cloud, right. It's just common sense. You have to move management where it can have the scale and the scope that it needs to impact your entire domain, your world, which is much larger now than it was before. We're talking about true hybrid cloud here. Right. So we had to solve certain problems that existed in the traditional architecture. You know, I can't tell you how many times I heard you talk about the mid plane is a great example. You know, the mid plane and a chastity is a limiting factor. It limits us on how much we can connect or how much bandwidth we have available to the chassis. It limits us on air flow and other things. So how do you solve that problem? Simple. Just get rid of it. Like we just we took it out, right. It's not no longer a problem. We designed an architecture that doesn't need it. It doesn't rely on it. No forklift upgrades. So, as we start moving down the path of needing liquid cooling or maybe we need to take advantage of some new, high performance, low latency fabrics. We can do that with almost. No problem at all. Right, So, we don't have any forklift upgrades. Park your forklift on the side. You won't need it anymore because you can upgrade gradually. You can move along as technologies come into existence that maybe don't even exist. They they may not even be on our radar today to take advantage of. But I like to think of these technologies, they're really important to our customers. These are, you know, we can call them disruptive technologies. The reality is that we don't want to disrupt our customers with these technologies. We want to give them these technologies so they can go out and be disruptive themselves. Right? And this is the way that we've designed this from the ground up to be easy to consume and to take advantage of what we know about today and what's coming in the future that we may not even know about. So we think this is a way to give our customers that ultimate capability flexibility and and future proofing. >>I like I like that phrase True hybrid cloud. It's one that we've used for years and but to me this is all about that horizontal infrastructure that can support that vision of what true hybrid cloud is. You can support the mission critical applications. You can you can develop on the system and you can support a variety of workload. You're not locked into one narrow stovepipe and that does have legs, Vegas and James. Thanks so much for coming on the program. Great to see you. >>Yeah. Thank you. We're here with thomas Shiva who is the Vice president of Product Management, A K A VP of all things data center, networking STN cloud. You name it in that category. Welcome thomas. Good to see you again. >>Hey Sam. Yes. Thanks for having me on. >>Yeah, it's our pleasure. Okay, let's get right into observe ability. When you think about observe ability, visibility, infrastructure monitoring problem resolution across the network. How does cloud change things? In other words, what are the challenges that networking teams are currently facing as they're moving to the cloud and trying to implement hybrid cloud? >>Yeah. Yeah, visibility as always is very, very important. And it's quite frankly, it's not just it's not just the networking team is actually the application team to write. And as you pointed out, the underlying impetus to what's going on here is the data center is where the data is. And I think we set us a couple years back and really what happens the applications are going to be deployed uh in different locations, right. Whether it's in a public cloud, whether it's on prayer, uh, and they are built differently right there, built as microservices, they might actually be distributed as well at the same application. And so what that really means is you need as an operator as well as actually a user better visibility. Where are my pieces and you need to be able to correlate between where the app is and what the underlying network is that is in place in these different locations. So you have actually a good knowledge while the app is running so fantastic or sometimes not. So I think that's that's really the problem statement. What what we're trying to go afterwards, observe ability. >>Okay, and let's double click on that. So a lot of customers tell me that you gotta stare at log files until your eyes bleed and you gotta bring in guys with lab coats who have phds to figure all this stuff out. So, so you just described, it's getting more complex, but at the same time you have to simplify things. So how how are you doing that, >>correct? So what we basically have done is we have this fantastic product that that is called 1000 Ice. And so what this does is basically as the name, which I think is a fantastic fantastic name. You have these sensors everywhere. Um, and you can have a good correlation on uh links between if I run from a site to aside from a site to a cloud, from a cloud to cloud and you basically can measure what is the performance of these links. And so what we're, what we're doing here is we're actually extending the footprint of these thousands agent. Right? Instead of just having uh inversion machine clouds, we are now embedding them with the Cisco network devices. Right? We announced this with the catalyst 9000 and we're extending this now to our 8000 catalyst product line for the for the SD were in products as well as to the data center products the next line. Um and so what you see is is, you know, half a saying, you have 1000 eyes, you get a million insights and you get a billion dollar of improvements uh for how your applications run. And this is really uh, the power of tying together the footprint of where the network is with the visibility, what is going on. So you actually know the application behavior that is attached to this network. >>I see. So okay. So as the cloud evolves and expands it connects your actually enabling 1000 eyes to go further, not just confined within a single data center location, but out to the network across clouds, et cetera, >>correct. Wherever the network is, you're going to have 1000 I sensor and you can't bring this together and you can quite frankly pick if you want to say, hey, I have my application in public cloud provider, a uh, domain one and I have another one domain to, I can't do monitor that link. I can also monitor have a user that has a campus location or branch location. I kind of put an agent there and then I can monitor the connectivity from that branch location all the way to the let's say corporations that data centre, our headquarter or to the cloud. And I can have these probes and just we have visibility and saying, hey, if there's a performance, I know where the issue is and then I obviously can use all the other foods that we have to address those. >>All right, let's talk about the cloud operating model. Everybody tells us it's really the change in the model that drives big numbers in terms of R. O. I. And I want you to maybe address how you're bringing automation and devops to this world of of hybrid and specifically how is Cisco enabling I. T. Organizations to move to a cloud operating model? Is that cloud definition expands? >>Yeah, no that's that's another interesting topic beyond the observe ability. So really, really what we're seeing and this is going on for uh I want to say a couple of years now, it's really this transition from operating infrastructure as a networking team more like a service like what you would expect from a cloud provider. Right? It's really around the network team offering services like a cloud provided us. And that's really what the meaning is of cloud operating model. Right? But this is infrastructure running your own data center where that's linking that infrastructure was whatever runs on the public club is operating and like a cloud service. And so we are on this journey for why? So one of the examples uh then we have removing some of the control software assets, the customers that they can deploy on prayer uh to uh an instance that they can deploy in a cloud provider and just busy, insane. She ate things there and then just run it that way. Right. And so the latest example for this is what we have our identity service engine that is now limited availability available on AWS and will become available in mid this year, both in Italy as unusual as a service. You can just go to market place, you can load it there and now you create, you can start running your policy control in a cloud, managing your access infrastructure in your data center, in your campus wherever you want to do it. And so that's just one example of how we see our customers network operations team taking advantage of a cloud operating model and basically employing their, their tools where they need them and when they need them. >>So what's the scope of, I hope I'm saying it right. Ice, right. I see. I think it's called ice. What's the scope of that like for instance, turn in effect my or even, you know, address simplify my security approach. >>Absolutely. That's now coming to what is the beauty of the product itself? Yes. What you can do is really is that there's a lot of people talking about else. How do I get to zero trust approach to networking? How do I get to a much more dynamic, flexible segmentation in my infrastructure. Again, whether this is only campus X as well as a data center and Ice help today, you can use this as a point to define your policies and then any connect from there. Right. In this particular case we would instant Ice in the cloud as a software load. You now can connect and say, hey, I want to manage and program my network infrastructure and my data center on my campus, going to the respective control over this DNA Center for campus or whether it is the A. C. I. Policy controller. And so yes, what you get as an effect out of this is a very elegant way to automatically manage in one place. What is my policy and then drive the right segmentation in your network infrastructure? >>zero. Trust that, you know, it was pre pandemic. It was kind of a buzzword. Now it's become a mandate. I wonder if we could talk about right. I mean I wonder if you talk about cloud native apps, you got all these developers that are working inside organizations. They're maintaining legacy apps. They're connecting their data to systems in the cloud there, sharing that data. I need these developers, they're rapidly advancing their skill sets. How is Cisco enabling its infrastructure to support this world of cloud? Native making infrastructure more responsive and agile for application developers? >>Yeah. So, you know, we're going to the top of his visibility, we talked about the operating model, how how our network operators actually want to use tools going forward. Now, the next step to this is it's not just the operator. How do they actually, where do they want to put these tools, how they, how they interact with these tools as well as quite frankly as how, let's say, a devops team on application team or Oclock team also wants to take advantage of the program ability of the underlying network. And this is where we're moving into this whole cloud native discussion, right? Which is really two angles, that is the cloud native way, how applications are being built. And then there is the cloud native way, how you interact with infrastructure. Right? And so what we have done is we're a putting in place the on ramps between clouds and then on top of it we're exposing for all these tools, a P I S that can be used in leverage by standard uh cloud tools or uh cloud native tools. Right. And one example or two examples we always have and again, we're on this journey for a while is both answerable uh script capabilities that exist from red hat as well as uh Ashitaka from capabilities that you can orchestrate across infrastructure to drive infrastructure, automation and what what really stands behind it is what either the networking operations team wants to do or even the ap team. They want to be able to describe the application as a code and then drive automatically or programmatically in situation of infrastructure needed for that application. And so what you see us doing is providing all these capability as an interface for all our network tools. Right. Whether it's this ice that I just mentioned, whether this is our D. C. And controllers in the data center, uh whether these are the controllers in the in the campus for all of those, we have cloud native interfaces. So operator or uh devops team can actually interact directly with that infrastructure the way they would do today with everything that lives in the cloud, with everything how they brought the application. >>This is key. You can't even have the conversation of op cloud operating model that includes and comprises on prem without programmable infrastructure. So that's that's very important. Last question, thomas our customers actually using this, they made the announcement today. There are there are there any examples of customers out there doing this? >>We do have a lot of customers out there that are moving down the past and using the D. D. Cisco high performance infrastructure, but also on the compute side as well as on an exercise one of the customers. Uh and this is like an interesting case. It's Rakuten uh record and is a large tackle provider, a mobile five G. Operator uh in Japan and expanding and is in different countries. Uh and so people something oh, cloud, you must be talking about the public cloud provider, the big the big three or four. But if you look at it, there's a lot of the tackle service providers are actually cloud providers as well and expanding very rapidly. And so we're actually very proud to work together with with Rakuten and help them building a high performance uh, data and infrastructure based on hard gig and actually phone a gig uh to drive their deployment to. It's a five G mobile cloud infrastructure, which is which is uh where the whole the whole world where traffic is going. And so it's really exciting to see this development and see the power of automation visibility uh together with the high performance infrastructure becoming reality and delivering actually services, >>you have some great points you're making there. Yes, you have the big four clouds, your enormous, but then you have a lot of actually quite large clouds. Telcos that are either approximate to those clouds or they're in places where those hyper scholars may not have a presence and building out their own infrastructure. So so that's a great case study uh thomas, hey, great having you on. Thanks so much for spending some time with us. >>Yeah, same here. I appreciate it. And so you you've got to protect that with some I mean, the entire portfolio that Cisco brings to the Great to have you and look forward to having you again. Great to see you. but the big public cloud players, they're like giving you a gift. and really harnessed that innovation that's built in the public cloud, that built an open source that built internally the job of it is to deliver something that works and works at scale that you can monitor But if you want to upgrade to enterprise features like clustering or the key uh As you rightly said, harsher car is the, We all talk about cloud native cady was sort of mentioning before you got the the core the power of communities and clog native to be used to be used anywhere. and a lot of functionality and value. outcome and our mission is to make it super simple for you to do that. you know, some of the details. and futures in the age of hybrid cloud with Vegas Rattana and James leach. So you can build whatever you need today The bridge to possible. And James Leach is the director of business development for U. C. S. At the Cisco as well. You've got two great guests cube alumni's Tom Anderson VP of answerable automation platform and Robyn Bergeron who's the Senior manager and small community community architect and all the great things involved, Robyn great to see you tom. Thanks for coming back on red hat some of this year. Virtual. Good to see you. >>Thanks for having us. >>So since last summit, what's the updates on the answerable community and the automation platform? Tom we'll start with you automation platform. What's the big updates? >>Yeah. So since the last time a lot has happened in the unanswerable land. If you will also last time that we were talking about constant collections have given distribution format or the integrations that ends this close. So a lot of the content. Uh huh. As well as the commercial users we launched last year a fucking program certified contact program with our partners and including partners to certify the content collections today. Create co certify them where we work together to make sure that they're uh developed against and tested against a proper step so that both of us can provide them to our customer basis with confidence that they're going to be working informed broccoli and that we red hat and our partners co support those out in our customers production parts. That was a big deal. The other thing that we announced late last fall was the private automation hub. And that's the idea where our customers obviously appreciate the idea of being able to go to Ansel Galaxy or the answerable automation to go and grab these content collections. This these integrations and bring them down in their environment. They wanted a way that they wanted a methodology where there are a repository where they can curate content from different sources and then manager across the environment. The automation across their environment. Kind of leaning into a little bit of automation content as code if you will. And um, so we launched the automation of the private automation hub where that sits in our customers infrastructure, whether that's in the cloud or on premises with both, and allows them to grab content from Galaxy from the answer automation. Uh, the answer automation hub on cloud got red hat dot com as well as their internally developed content and to be able to manage and provide that across their organization governed by a set of policies. So lots of stuff is going on real advancement in the amount of content that we provide, uh, the amount of collections that we provide them certified up for customers and and the ability to manage that company across the teams. >>I want to do a drill down on some of the unification of teams, which is a big message as well as operating scale because that's the super value proposition you guys have and want to get that. But robert, I want to come back to you on the community so much has gone on, we are now into the pandemic for almost a year and a half now, um it's been a productivity boom. People, developers have been working at home for a long time, so it's not a new workflow for them, but you've seen a lot more productivity. What has changed in the community since last summit? Again, virtual to virtual again between the Windows here, event Windows, you guys have a lot going on. What's new in the community gets an update? >>Yeah, well, I mean if we go back to summit, you know, this time ish, you know, last year we were wrapping up more or less the, it was, you know, we used to have, you know, everything you would install answerable, you would get all the modules, you get everything, you know, it was all all all together, which, you know, is great for new users who don't want to have to figure things out. It helps them to really get up and started running quickly. Um and But, you know, for a from a community perspective, trying to manage that level of complexity turned out to be pretty hard. So the move to collection was actually great for, you know, not just, you know, for a user perspective, but also from a community perspective. Um and we came out with the answerable to 10 that was last fall, I believe, and that was the first real release advance. Well, where we had, you know, collections were fully in stan she hated uh you know, they were available on Galaxy, but you can also get them as part of the animal community distribution. Um, fast forward to now. You know, we just had the answer to all three point oh release here in february and we're looking to answer bill ford auto here in early May. So, you know, there's been a lot of activity, a lot has improved honestly as a result of the changes that we've made, it's made it a lot easier for contributors to get in with a smaller group that's more of their size and you know, be able to get start and identify, you know, who are, they're interested peers in the community. So that's been a boon for us honestly. Um, you know, the pandemic otherwise is, you know, I think taught all of us, you know, certainly you john about the, the amazing things that we can do virtually. So we've had a lot of our meetups pivot to being virtual meetups and, and things like that. And it's been great to see how, how easily the community's been able to pivot around. You know, this sort of event. Um, I hope that we don't have to just keep practicing it for forever, but in the meantime, you know, it's enabled us to continue to get things done. Thank goodness to every video platform on earth. Yeah, >>well we appreciate we're gonna come back and talk more about that in the future, but best practice what we all learned and stories. But I think I want to come back to you on the persona side of answerable because one of the things we talked about last time that seems to be getting a lot of traction is that multiple personas. So I want to just hold off that will come back tom back to back to you were red hat summit. You guys have an apple fest, which is your own event that you guys drill down on this. So users Washington, you know this, your own community, but now part of red hat part of IBM, which IBM thinks also happening soon as well. Red hat some, it still is unique event. How is answerable fitting into the big picture? Because the, the value proposition of unifying teams is really consistent now with red hats overall arching thing, which is operating at scale open shift Robin just mentioned, where is the automation platform going this year? What's the story here at red hat summit for the automation platform? >>Yeah, that's that's a great question. We've seen so kind of timeless, a little bit of dependent and how it has accelerated some existing trends that we already saw and one of those is really around the democratization of the application delivery teams, more people delivering infrastructure and applications independent of each other, which is right, faster and more agile, all of those other. Good, good uh, words that apply to that. But what that does bring up is the opportunity for um >>patient >>of work, replication of effort, uh not reusing necessary things that are in existence already that other things may have maybe not complying with all of the policies if you will, the configuration and compliance policies. And so it's really kind of brought danceable out into focus even more here because of the car comin back plane that provides a common language and common automation back plane across these different teams and across these different personas. The great thing about what we supply for these different personas, whether its application developers, infrastructure owners, network engineers set up teams, get ox teams, There's so many of these options out there now, All want independent access to infrastructure and deploying infrastructure. And Answerable has the kind of levers that each of those communities, whether it's API or Cli s or event based automation or uh web hooks, et cetera et cetera. You know, service catalog. He lies all of those um interfaces if you will or modalities are accessible into hands of water nations. What's really allowed us to be this sort of connective tissue or blue across these different silos or remains of the organization the time of the year? Open ship specifically one of the things that we talked about last fall and are answerable fest was our integration between Answerable to automation platform are advanced cluster management product and are open ship platform that allows native applications running on open ship. Be able to talk to a sensible automation operator that's running on that same platform to do things off platform for it that our customers are already using. Answer before. So connecting their cloud, native platforms with their existing ecosystems and infrastructures. Systems of records, network systems, uh, ticketing systems, you name it. So all of those sort of integrations and school has become the connected blew across all of these different environments time. Traditional, anti biotic native, you name it. So it's really been it's really been fun and it's been an exciting time for us inside the portfolio. And uh, >>that's a great point connective tissue is a great way to describe some of these platform benefits because you have been on this platform for a really long time and the benefits are kind of being seen in the market. Certainly as people have to move faster with the agility robert. I want to come back to you because you brought up this idea of personas. I mean we all know devops infrastructure as code has been our religion for over a decade more, but now the word DEv sec ops is more prevalent in all the conversations the securities now weaved in here. How are you seeing that play out in the community and then tom if you can give some color commentary to on the automation platform, how security fits in. So devops everything's being operationalized at scale, we get that that's one of the value problems You have. But def sec off as a persona, more people want more sex. Deb is great more ops and standardisation. More developers, agile standards and then security def sec ops. What's your? I >>thought it was dev net sec off. >>Okay. I've forgotten that they were putting that in their networks abstracted away, you know, As we say. Yeah. >>Well, you know, from, from my perspective, you know there are people and their jobs all over the place is right. Like they you know the more they can feel like they're efficient and doing great stuff at their work. Like they're happy to bring as many people into the fold as possible, right? And you know normally security has always been this you know it's sort of like networking right? It's always been this sort of isolated this special group over here that's the traditional you know one of the traditional I. T. Bottlenecks that causes us to not be able to get anything done. But you know on a community level we see folks who are interested in security you know all the time. I know we've certainly done quite a bit of work with some folks at IBM around one of their products which I assume tom will get more into here in just a moment, but from, you know, a community perspective, I mean, we've seen people who have been writing, you know, playbooks and roles and you know, now collections for uh you know, all the traditional government testing, you know, is are, you know, missed standards, all of that kind of stuff. Um and you know, it's one of those, it's part of network effects and it's a great place where actually automation hub, I think, you know, for folks who are on prem or you know, any of our customers are really going to start to see lots of value is how it will be able to connect folks inside the organization organically through just the place where I'm doing my answerable things, allows them to find each other really, and build those, you know, take it from being silos of automation everywhere into a really sort of networked, you know, internal network of of answerable friends and uh danceable power users that can work together and collaborate, you know, just the same way that we do an open source >>and tom so I. T. Modernization requires security. What's your take on this? Because, you know, you got cluster a lot of cluster advanced cluster management issues, you've got to deal with the modern apps, they're coming, I. T. S got to evolve. What's your take on all >>this? Yeah, not only does I have to call but it's it's an integration like the rest of the environment and be able to respond the spirit of that song on the areas that we put a lot of effort into advanced in terms of curating and solutions around national security automation. We talked about that in the past, the idea of connecting the SEc ops teams that are doing intrusion detection or threat hunting and then responding in an automated way to those threats protections. Right? So, connecting stepped up to the bike, which is traditionally been styled operations and silo teams. And now it is curated against the security automation uh, solution that we've got a market with our partners. It connects those two teams in a single sort of way. We've done a lot of work with our friends that idea around this area because they are big and that security area, a radar and other products in their portfolio. So we've done a lot of work with them but we don't want to work with lots of our partners for their side. There are Microsoft in those areas. Traditionally Danceable has done a great job on sort of compliance around configuration enforcement, right setting and enforcing configuration. Now we moved into connecting set pops with IT security automation. And now with our acquisition of staff blocks along with our advanced custom management immigration with Danceable were starting to say, what are the things inside that sack office workflow that may require integration or automation packaged? Automate automation with other parts of the environment, bringing all of those pieces together as we move forward to security for us. >>Okay. I gotta ask you guys the number one question that I get all the time and I see in the marketplace is kind of a combo question is how do I accelerate the automation of my cloud native development with my traditional infrastructure? Because as people put in green born the cloud projects, whether it's whether and then integrating able to cloud on premises with nutritional infrastructure, how do I accelerate those two environments? How I automate accelerate the automation? >>Yeah. So it's a great story for us and this is what we're talking about, small and special as we have bringing together of our advanced cluster management product, open ship platform and it's just, you know, widespread use through all the automation of both traditional and cognitive changes. Whether it's cloud infrastructure on premise, start network, you name it, customers are using answerable user, you're using answer to do all kinds of pieces in the system infrastructure. Being able to tie that to their new collaborative initiatives without having to redo all of that work that they've already done to integrate that existing um infrastructure automation with their cognitive accelerate substantial what I call the offer operationalization to say operated operationalization, their cloud native platforms that are existing infrastructure and existing I uh, ecosystem. I believe that that's where the answer the automation and plays a key role in connecting those students is together without having to redo all that work that's been done in investment >>robert. What's your take on this? This is what people are working on the trenches, they realized cloud benefits. They got some cloud native action, and also that they got the on the traditional environment, they got to get them connected and automated. >>Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you know, the beauty of answerable, you know, from an end user perspective is, you know, how easy it is to learn and how easy the languages to learn. And I think, you know, that that portability, you know, it doesn't matter like how much of a rocket scientist you are, you know, everybody appreciates simplicity, everybody appreciates being able to hand something simple to somebody else and letting other people get done and having it be more or less in a it's not quite english, but it's definitely, you know, answer is quite readable, right? Um, and you know, when we looked at, you know, when we started to work on all the answerable operators, you know, one of that, one of the main pieces there was, making sure that that simplicity that we have an answerable is brought over directly into the operators. So just because it's cloud native doesn't mean you suddenly have to learn, you know, a whole set of new languages and peoples just as portable there as it is to any other part of the your mighty organization, infrastructure or whatever it is that you have going on. >>Well, there's a lot of action going on here at red hat summit 2021 things I wanted to bring up in context of the show um is the successor and the importance of you guys having answerable collections. This has come up multiple times. Um as we talked about those personas and you've got these new contributors, you've got people contributing content. Um, as open source continues to grow and be phenomenal value proposition. Touch on this uh, concept of collections. What's the updates? Why is it important? Why should folks pay attention to it and continue to innovate with collection? >>This is from a commercial perspective of food products, questions and down has made a lot of these contributors to create an exploit, distribute content at the end, the problems mentioned earlier, these iterations announced, we'll have all of the documentation, all those collections, all within one. If you call the batteries included back at the time that day. Right. But that, that meant that contributors um, be able to deploy their content with the base, has the distribution. They have to wait for the next version. Events. Alright, that's when that content would get redistributed the next investment. He coupled content from the core engine, putting that into elections that are individual elements of related innovations closes can use at their own pace. So users and customers can get content baby a case that contributors like in public. So, uh, customers don't have to wait for the next evolution shipping products. You get a new version of the immigration is really like, you know, so again, a couple of those things that last into the different faces the engine or the platform itself is the state Department's here. It's going to be a certain website. Content itself, all the different content, the network providers ready platforms, all of those same pace. You girls have their own life cycle quite sweet. It allows us to get more functionality for customers hands like bigger and then launching our Certified can support that. Okay. Certified. Support that content tells me the values that we bring our customers with the subscription. Is that ecosystem and highest partners that we work with Certified and support the stuff that we should and support with possible superb benefits, both on the access to the technology as well as the access to the value of this. In terms of immigration testing and support >>Robin, What's your take on the community? I see custom automation with with the connector, a lot of action going on collections. >>Yeah, absolutely. Um, you know, it's been interesting, you know, tom just mentioned the, you know how everything previously all had to be released all at once. Right. And if you think about, you know sure I have answerable installed but you know, how often do I have to, you know, just even as a regular, I'm not a system administrator these days, type person like how often do I have to, you know, click that button to update, you know, my Mac or my Lennox machine or, you know, my Windows machine or, you know, the operating system on my telephone, right? Every time one of these devices that answerable connects to or a program or whatever it is, connects to something, those things are all operating and, you know, developing themselves at their own pace is right? So when a new version of, you know, uh, uh, well, we'll call Red Hat enterprise Linux when a new version of Red Hat enterprise Lennox comes out, uh, if there are new changes or new features that, you know, we want to be able to connect to it. That's not really helpful when we're not releasing for another six months. Right? So it's really helped us, you know, from a community angle to be able to have each of these collections working in concert with, you know, like for example, in real like the Lennox subsystems that are actually making things that will be turned into collections, right? Like Sc Lennox or System D right? Like those things move at their own pace, we can update those at our own pace in in collections and then people can update those collections without having to wait another six months or eight months or whatever it is for a new version of answerable to come out. It's really made it easier for all of those, you know, developers of content to work on their content and their, you know, answerable relationships almost in sync and make sure that, you know, but not, I'm going to do it over here and then I'm gonna come back over here and fix everything later. It's more of a continuous >>development. So they contribute experience is better than you'd say. >>I'm sorry, >>the contributor experiences better than. Oh, >>absolutely. Yeah, 100%. I mean, it's, >>it's, >>you know, there's something to be said for. I wouldn't say it's like instant satisfaction, but, but certainly the ability to have a little bit more independence and be able to release things as as you see fit and not be gated by the entire rest of the project is amazing for those >>votes. So I put you on the spot, Robin. So if I'm a, I'm a developer bottom line, me, what's in it for me? Why? Why should I pay attention to collections? What's the bottom >>line? Well, you know, answerable as a platform and, and for benefits from network effects. Um, you know, the reason that we've gotten as big as we have sort of like the snowball rolling downhill, right, the more people that latch on to what you're doing, the more people benefit and the more, you know, additional folks want to join in. So, you know, if I, if I was working on any other product that I would consider being able to have automated with answerable, um, you know, the biggest thing that I would look at is, well, you know, what are those people also using or they automating it with an apple and I can guarantee you 99% of the time, everything else that people are using is also being automated with answerable. So you'd be crazy to not, you know, want to participate and make sure that you're providing the best, you know, and experience for your application because for every Application or device that we can connect you, there's probably 20 other competitors that also make similar applications that folks might also consider in lieu of you if you're not using your not providing ample content >>for it. Hey, make things easier, simple to use and you reduce the steps it takes to do things. That's a winning formula. Tom. I mean when you make things that good, then you get the network effect. But this highlights what you mentioned earlier about connective tissue. When you use words like connective tissue, it implies an organizational is not a mechanism. It's not just software, it's people, there's a people experience here in the automation platform. This seems to be the bottom line. What's, what's your take? What's your bottom line of you? I'm a developer. What's in it for me? Why should I pay attention to the automation platform? >>States of the public developer. What excites me is using it? Yeah, I'm just composition department and crossing those domains in silence and sort of can issue across these tools and resolve this means those contributors is developed as a great denomination come embedded in the hands of more people across the organization. Absoluteal more simple. five way by using the explanation. Sometimes they get access right. You see those out the automation of South coast for so long as they get access to existing automation faster. They have to run into the expert on their part requirement a local hotel folks and the real in terms of automation and that kind of a patient. Excellently. When I'm getting on you about the details of what it takes them, you configure the network and figure the storage elements. They rely on those automation developers and contributors that would do that for them. You must really work powers of this Children across those news process of human. Again when I got kidnapped and sent cops, the idea of connecting to the network, being able to do all of these tasks with the same language and the same. In addition, funds had some money faster and get some of the kind of quote responsibilities without worrying. Line >>Robin, you wanted to talk about something uh, in the community. Any updates? I think navigator you mentioned you wanted to mention uh, plug for that. Absolutely. >>So, you know, um, much like any other platform in the universe. You know, if you don't have really great uh, tools for developing content, you're kind of, you know, dead in the water, right? Or you're leaving it to fate. So we've been working on a new project. I'm not part of the product yet, but you know, it's sort of in a community exploratory phrase released early release often or you know, minimum viable project I guess might be the other way to describe it currently. Uh it's a called Animal Navigator, it's a TUI which is like a gooey, but it's got a sort of a terminal user interface look to it that allows you to, you know, develop, its a sort of interface where you can develop content, uh you know, all in one window, have your, you know, documentation accessible to you have, you know, all of your test results available to you in one window, um rather than I'm going to do something here and then I'm gonna go over here and now, I'm not sure. So now I'm gonna go over here and look at docs instead. It's all, you know, it's all in one place, um which we think will actually, but I mean, I know the folks who have seen it have already been like, but you know, it's definitely an early community stages right now. It's, you know, we can give you the link github dot com slash answer slash danceable navigator, but >>versus a gooey versus a command line interface are how do you innovate on the command line? It's a kuwaiti uh it's >>um you know, there there's so many ideas out there and I think tom can probably talk to some of this, you know, how that might relate to V. S. Code or you know, many of the other traditional developer ideas that are out there, but you know, the goal certainly to be able to integrate with some of those other pieces. Um but you know, it's one of those things where, you know, if everybody is using the same tool, we can start to enforce higher levels of quality and standards through that tool. Uh there's benefits for everyone tom, I don't know if you want to add on to that in any way. >>Yeah, it's just kind of one of our focus areas religious making it as easy as possible to create things and a lot of nations. So part of that is essentially a kind of road map in the nesting table and spoke that that's not presented to the security is you don't build test deploy. And we certainly know the new normal is not going away. We've been doing this since the middle of March. We're all the way to October. And so we're excited of our next guest. He's Thomas Shy V. He's the vice president of product marketing and data center networking for the intent based networking group at Cisco. Thomas, great to see you. >>Hey, good to see you, too. Yeah. Yeah. And truly running in normal, as everybody can see in our background. >>Exactly. Exactly so. But I mean, I'm curious. We've talked to a lot of people. We talked to a lot of leaders, you know, especially like back in March and April with this light switch moment, which was, you know, no time to prep. And suddenly everybody has to work from home. Teachers got to teach from home. And so you got the kids home. You got the spouse home. Everybody's home trying to get on the network and do their zoom calls in their classes. I'm curious from your perspective. You guys air right there on the on the network. You're right in the infrastructure. What did you hear and see? Kind of from your customers When suddenly, you know, March 16th hit and everybody had to go home. >>Well, good point. A. I do think we all appreciate the network much more than we used to do before on. Then the only other differences I'm really more on. Ravix calls and zoom called, but you know otherwise? Yes. Um what? What I do see, actually, is that, as I said, network becomes much more operates as a critical piece. And so before we really talked a lot about, uh, agility and flexibility these days, we talk much more about resiliency. Quite frankly, uh, what do I need to have in place with respect to network? To get my things from left to right and, you know, just 2000 east or west, as we say in the data center Right on. That just is for most of my customers, very, very important topic at this point, right? >>You know, it's it's amazing to think, you know, had this happened, you know, five years ago, 10 years ago. You know, the ability for so many people in the information industry to be able to actually make that transition relatively seamlessly. Eyes is actually pretty amazing. I'm sure there was some some excitement in some kudos in terms of, you know, it is all based on the network, and it is kind of this quiet thing in the background that nobody pays attention to. It's like a ref in the football game until they make a bad play. So, you know, it is pretty fascinating that you and your colleagues that put this infrastructure and that enabled us to really make that move with with with really no prep, no planning and actually have a whole lot of services delivered into our homes that were used to getting at the office or used to getting at school. >>Yeah, and I mean to your point, I mean, some of us did some planning. We're clearly talking about some of these thes trends in the way I look at this. Trans is being distributed data centers and having the ability to move your workloads and your access for users to wherever you wanna be. And so I think that clearly went on for a while. And so in a sense, we practice or knowing what we're prepping for. Um, but as I said, resiliency just became so much more important. And, you know, one of things. I actually do a little clock, a little little prep you for block I put out end of August around resiliency. Uh, you if you didn't, if you didn't put this in place, you better put in place because I think, as we all know, we saw her march. This is like, maybe two or three months. We're now in October. Uh, and I think this is the new normal for some time being. Yeah, >>I think so. So let's stick on that theme in terms of trends, right? The other great trend is public cloud, um, and hybrid cloud and multi cloud. There's all types of variants on that theme. Yeah, you had in that block post about resiliency and data center cloud networking data center cloud. You know, some people think Wait, it's it's kind of an either or either got my data center or I've got my stuff in the cloud and I got Public Cloud. And then, as I said, Hybrid cloud, you're talking really specifically about enabling, um, both in inner Data Center resiliency within multi data centers within the same enterprise as well as connecting to the cloud. That's probably counterintuitive for some people to think that that's something that Cisco is excited about and supporting. So I wonder if you can share, you know, kind of the market is changing. How you guys air reacting and really putting the things in place t to deliver customer choice. >>Yeah, I know. It's actually to me. It's really not counterintuitive, because in the end, what what I'm focusing on and the company's focus on is what our customers want to do and need to do on. That's really, um, would you know, most people call hybrid cloud or multi cloud, Uh, in in the end, what? What? This is really the ability to have the flexibility to move your workloads where you want him to be, and they have different reasons why you want to place them right. You might have placed them for security reason. You might have placed for clients. Reason depending on which customer segment you're after. If you're in the United States or in Europe, in Asia there are a lot of different reasons we're gonna put your things. And so I think in the end, what on enterprise looks for is that agility, flexibility and resiliency. And and so really, what you want to put in place is what we call like a cloud on ramp, right? You need to have an ability to move sings as needed. But the larger context action which we see in the last couple of months accelerating, is really this whole seem around digital transformation, which goes hand in hand. Then, was the requirement on the Teesside really do? And I t operations transformation, Right? How I t operates on. I think that's really exciting to see. And this is actually where a lot off my discussions I was customers. What does it actually mean with respect to the I t organization? And what are the operational changes? There's a lot of our customers they're going through, quite frankly, accelerated going through >>right and and automation is in the title of the event. So automation is you know is an increasingly important thing. You know, as the as we know and we hear all the time, you know, the flows of data, the complexity of the data, either the on the security or the way the networks moving or, as you said, shifting workloads around based on dynamic situations. Whether that's business security, etcetera, you too suffer to find networking has been around for a while. How are you seeing kind of this evolution in and adding mawr automation, You know, to more and more processes to free up those those, um, kind of limited resource is in terms of really skilled people to focus on the things that they should be focused on and not stuff that that hopefully you can, you know, get a machine to run with some level of >>automation. Yeah, that's a good point. And they said the Tekla and a half, you know, sometimes in my mind is really going from cloud ready, which I think most of infrastructures today to cloud native. And so let me a little expand on. This right is like the cloud ready is basically what we have put in place over the last 5 to 6 years. All the infrastructure that our customers have network infrastructure or the Nexus 9000. They're all cloud ready right now, what this really means. You have a P ice everywhere, right? Whether this is on the box, whether it's on the controller, whether this is on the operations tools, all of these a p i a neighborhood. And that's just the foundation for automation, right? You have to have that now. The next step really is What do you do with that capability? And right? And this is the integration was a lot off automation tools on. That's the whole range, right? This is where the I t operation transformation kicks in. Different customers a different speed, right? Some just You know, I used these AP ice and use normal tools that they have in the network world just to pull information. Some customers go for further and saying, I want to integrate this with extensive Deb equals some go even further and saying this is like the cloud native people saying, Oh, I want to use, let's say, redhead answerable. I want to use how she called terra form and use those things to actually drive. How I manage my infrastructure. And so that's really the combination of the automation capability. Plus, the integration was relevant cloud native, enabling tools that really is happening. At this point, we're seeing customers accelerating that. That motion, which really then drives, is how they run their I t operations. And so that's a pretty exciting, exciting area to see given. As I said, we have the infrastructure in place. There is no need for customers to actually do change something most of them have already. The infrastructures that can do this is just no doing the operation change the process, changes to actually get there >>right. And it's funny we we recently covered, you know, pager duty. And they highlight which you just talked about. The cloud native, which is, you know, all of these applications now were so interdependent on all these different a p. I s, you know, pulling data from all these applications. So a when they work great, it's terrific. But if there's a problem, you know there's a whole lot of potential throats to choke out there and find. Find those issues and it's all being connected via the network. So, you know, it's even Mawr. Critically important not only for the application, but for all these little tiny components within the application to deliver. You know, ultimately a customer experience within very small units of time s so that you don't lose that customer. You complete that transaction, they check out of the shopping cart. You know, all these these things that are now created with cloud native applications that just couldn't really do before. >>No, you're absolutely right. And this, this is like I just said, I'm actually very excited because it opens up a lot off abilities for our customers how they want to actually structure the operation, right? One of the nice things around this whole automation, plus, uh, true integration closer to integration is you actually open this up. Now, this whole automation trained not just to the network operations person, right? You also open it up and can use this for the sake cups person or for the death of a person or for the cloud tops engineering team. Right? Because the way it's structured, the way we built this, um, it's literally it's an A p I interface, and you can now decide what is your process? Do you wanna have? On what? Traditional process. You have a request number. Corporation teams executes request using these tools and enhance it back over. Or you say, Hey, maybe some of these security things I'm gonna hand over the second team and it can directly call these days a p I s right or even one step further. You can have the opportunity that the death of So the application team actually says, Hey, I got to write a whole infrastructure as code kind of a script or template and I just execute right and it's really just using what the infrastructure provides. And so that whole range off different user roles in our customer base. What they can do with the automation capability that's available. It's just very, very exciting, right, because it's literally unleashes a lot of flexibility, how they want to structure and how they wanna. We built the I T operations processes. >>That's interesting, you know, because the you know, the Dev ops culture has taken over a lot. Right obviously changed software programming for the last 20 years, and and I think you know there's a There's a lot of just kind of the concept of Dev ops versus necessarily. You know, the actual things that you do to execute that technique. And I don't think most people would think of, you know, network ops or, you know, netapp. You know, whatever the equivalent is in the networking world toe have, you know, kind of a fast changing dynamic kind of point of view versus a You know, stick it in, you know, spec it, stick it in, lock it down. So I wonder if you can You can share how, you know, kind of that, Dev ops, um attitude, point of view, workflow, whatever the right verb is has impacted, you know, things that Cisco and the way you guys think about networking and flexibility within the networking world. >>Yeah, literally. Absolutely. And again, it's all customer driven, right? Is none of this. None of this is really actually, you know, a little bit of credit. Maybe some of us where we have a vision, but a lot of this just customer driven feedback. Uh, yeah, we we do have even network operations teams comes to saying, Hey, we use answerable heavily on the computer side. We might use this for for seven. We want to use the same for networking. And so we made available all these integrations with the variety of state. Whether these are the switches, whether it's our A, C and D C and controller or our Martha said orchestration capabilities, all of these has answerable integration away. All right, The other one is you mentioned how she from Cherepkov telephone. We have integrations available and they see the request for these tools to use that on DSO. That is emotion. We're in for over a year now. And another block, actually, that's out there. We're just supposed to saying you all set what you can do on then in parallel to this, right? Just making the integration available. We also have a very, very heavy focus on on definite and enablement and training on, you know, a little pluck. And I know probably part of the segment. The whole definite community that Cisco has is very, very vibrant. Uh, and the beauty off this is right. If you look at this, whether your naps person or a deaf person or seconds person, it doesn't really matter. There is a lot of like capability available to just help you get going or go from one level to the next level, right? And there's simple things like sandbox environments where you can, you know, without stress, dry things out. Snippets of code A there you could do all of these things. And so we do see, it's a kind of a push and pull a tremendous amount of interest and the tremendous, uh uh, time people spend to learn, quite frankly. And that's another side product off. You know, the situation wherein people sit home and say, Okay, online learning is the thing. So thes, thes thes tools. They're used very heavily, right? >>So that's awesome. Because, you know, we've We've had Suzy we on a number of times. And I know he and Mandy and the team, right, really built this definite thing. And it really follows along this other theme that we see consistently across other pieces of tech, which is democratization, right? Democratization to the access tool, taking it out of of just a mahogany row with again really limited number of people that know how to make it work and and could make changes in opening up to a software defined world where now that you know It's his application centric point of view where the people that are building the APS to go create competitive advantage now don't have to wait for, you know, the one network person to help him out of these environments. Really interesting. I wonder, you know, when you look at what's happened with Public Cloud and how they kind of changed the buying parameter, how they kind of changed the the the degree of difficulty to get projects started. You know how you guys have kind of integrated that that type of thought process to make it easier for app developers to get their job done? >>Yeah, I mean again, it's It's I took a look at this more from a from a customer. Answer, right? It's the transformation process, and it always starts is I want agility. I want flexibility. Anyone resiliency, right. This is where we talked to a business owner what they're looking for and then it translates into into a night operations process, right? Your strategy needs to map them. How you actually do this on that? Just tries. Then what truths do you want to have available to actually enable this right and the enablement again? is for different roles right there is. You need to give sing services to the app developer and, uh, the platform team and the security team right to your point so the network can act at the same speed. But you also give to to the network operations teams because they need thio adjust. And they have the ability to react thio to some of these requirements. Right? And it's not just automation. I think we we focused on that. But there's also to your point, the need how to extend between data sent us, you know, just just for backup and recovery. And how do I extend into public clouds? Right. Uh, in the end, that's ah, that's the network connectivity problem. And we have soft us. We have made us available. We have integrations into, uh, W s. We have integrations into azure to actually make this very easy from a from a network perspective to extend your private domains private networks into virtual private networks on on these public cloud. So from an app developer perspective, now it looks like he's on the same network. It's a protective enterprise network. Some of it might sit here, someone might sit here, but it's really looking the same. And that's really in the end. I think what what a business looks at, right? They don't necessarily want to say I need to have something separate for this deployment was separate for that deployment. What they want is I need to deploy something. E need to do this resilient in the resilient way in an enjoyable way. Give me the tools. And so that's really where we focus, Um, and what we're driving right? It's that combination of automation consistently and then definite tools available that we support. But they're all open. Uh, they're all standard tools. The ones I mentioned right that everybody is using. So you're not getting into this. Oh, this is specific to Cisco. Uh, it's really democratization. I actually like the term. Yeah, >>it's It's a great terminate, and it's it's really interesting, especially with with the A p i s and the way everything is so tight together that everyone kind of has to enable this because that's what the customers demanding. Um, and it is all about the applications and workloads, and one of those things are moving, but they don't really wanna manage that. They just wanna, you know, deliver business, benefit to their customers and respond. Thio, you know, competitive threats in the marketplace, etcetera. So it's really an interesting time for the infrastructure, you know, to really support kind of this at first point of view versus the other way around is kind of what it used to be and and enable this hyper fast development, hyper fast change and in the competitive landscape, or else you will be left behind. Um, so super important stuff. >>Yeah. No, I totally agree. And as I said, I mean, it's it's kind of interesting because we we started on the Cisco Data Center side we started. It's probably six or seven years ago, uh, when we when we named the applications centric. Clearly, a lot of these concepts evolved, but in a sense it is. That reversal of the role from the network provides something, and you used Teoh. This is what I want to do, and I need a service thinking on the networking side to explosives that can be consumed, and so that clearly is playing out and said Automation Issa Kiki Foundation that we put in place in our customers. Most of our customers this point on these on these products? Uh, they have all the capabilities there. They can literally take advantage. There's really nothing that stops them points. >>Well, it's good times for you because I'm sure you've seen all the memes in in in social Media, right? What's driving your digital transformation? Is that the CEO, the CMO or cove it? And we all know the answer to the question, so I don't think the pace of change is going to slow down any time soon. So for keeping the network up and enabling us all the get done, what we have to get done and and all the little magic that happens behind the scenes >>Yeah, I know. Thanks. Thanks for having me. It's the cube covering AWS reinvent 2019 brought to you by Amazon web services and along with its ecosystem partners. >>Well, welcome back to the cube live here in Las Vegas for AWS reinvent 2019 it's the cubes seventh year, eighth year of reinvent. We've been there almost from the beginning. I'm John ferry with Dave Volante extracting the signal from the noise. The two great guests here chew senior leaders, VMware, auntie that were Sanjay Poonan, COO of VMware cube alumni, Mike Clayville, vice president of worldwide commercial sales and business development for AWS guys. You're the senior leaders out on the field making things happen. I got to say the AWS VMware relationship, which we covered a couple of years ago when Gelsinger and Jassy were doing the little love Fest, they're in San Francisco. A lot of people were skeptical. This show here, we're hearing things like, that's my Superbowl moment. Things are working great. Cloud is scaling, so congratulations and welcome to the cube. Good to see you. Thank you. Yeah. All right, so let's get to the relationship. >>Talk about you guys' relationship and how it's morphed into such a success. We're hearing great feedback. The numbers on the research at day's been digging into shows. Customer spend is up. Is that the wave of cloud? Is that the integration? Sanjay, what's going on? Give us, gives you up to, Oh, I think we're delighted. You know Mike obviously and I have been friends for years. He's had some connections with VMware in his past that certainly helped in setting up this partnerships. So we're grateful to Mike and Andy and the team for that and it's, you know, two and a half to three years now since we announced it. Tremendous amount of customer interest. Listen, you know we said at the beginning of this, when you take sort of the King of the public cloud and the King, the private cloud together and don't force customers to say these have to be separate doors, you're going to do them both together. >>Customers liked that message and what we've been really doing over the course of the last 1218 months is perfecting use cases for this platform. I think to us, the key word is migrations. Cloud migrations. When people are moving their workloads off an app off VMware vSphere or cloud foundation, we want this to be the best place for it to land. We are McCloud in AWS for migration opportunity and anything short of that refactoring app would we, you know, not something that would be a good use of people's time and money because they should be then modernizing with all the wonderful services that Amazon's built, one they've migrated. So we've really perfected our message in the course of the last six, 12 months to two M's, migrate and modernize, migrate and modernize. So we could migrate you into this Avenue and then modernize with a set of container and other services. So that messes working. We put on stage at VMworld and there are many of them here, two big Amazon customers, VMware cloud, Amazon, Freddie Mac and IHS market. And they were telling our tens of thousands customers at those shows and similarly many of them here, that that's the best option to be able to do things. >>Yeah, it's great. It's great by the way, because it's a frictionless migration, right? So you've got a platform that same code base working on pram, same cloud based and cloud creating a seamless integration between the two platforms. We're finding customers very in enthralled by that. I say they say they love that because it's less disruptive for them. Yeah. But at the same time they say, but eventually I want to change my operating model to really drive profits to my bottom line. So could you talk a little bit about what that journey looks like? And I'm really interested in longer term Sanjay, how you play in that. I look Mike, sorry. So the first thing I'd say that one of the real reasons I love it is because they've got a big investment today and that investment is in skills. That investment is in operational processes. That investment is in licensing and all of that comes along with them on their journey. Whether it's a migration journey or a migration to modernize journey, it's working. So when you're talking about the bottom line, like you are, this is a great play for that bottom line. >>Yeah, I know. And I'd say, listen, from our perspective, we want to take a Freddie Mac. When they spoke at VMworld, they have I think 800 applications, 50 of whom are SAS and the other 750 are custom built, deep Lee virtualized and they're going to move all of them over the course of the next 12 months. I fell off my chair when I, when I heard how fast they planned to do it. IHS market has very a variety of very spread accounts and Amazon. Now we're going to help them move a lot of their workloads there. Once they're there, we want them to then use the tools that Amazon's bill. I'll give you two examples, maybe some of their backup tools into S3 CloudWatch some of their analytical monitoring types of tools. So there's going to be, and then of course AI database services and the best place once you've moved it there is to make sure that that migrated stack is stable. >>You have the best of the VMware tools, V center, V motion, all you know and the best of the Amazon tools. So when people start to see this, I think the myth of Sarah's saying refactor and replatform that application, which is in essence like taking a home. Okay. And having to destroy the home and completely rebuild it. Right? And that's just a meal, a waste of money and time when you could migrate it and then modernize it. So we just need to get that story well understood. Get our, you know, I, I mean Amazon probably has a few million customers. We have a half a million customers. If all of those customers can hear the story and beginning their journey with us, I think we will tip this in a way. Starting >>to tip, to get the, back to the point of your question as well. Look, our two companies have been engineering these solutions together deeply. So this just isn't a paper arbiters. Yeah. This is an engineering partnership that started years ago and what that means is as customers migrate to a beam ware on AWS, now they have access to over 175 AWS services, can it, right. Significant native access to a broad range of services that they can continue to innovate, identify new business models and it all seamlessly integrates back into a single platform. >>Yeah. One of the things I always said when I talked to Andy and Amazon folks is that the competitive advantage of the businesses scale and also the new announcements that come in. So one of the things we heard yesterday from a customer, uh, one of your joint customers was, you know, I asked him about outpost, which you guys now are going to ship in 2020, which was announced you already got native outpost, general availability. He goes, look it, we'd love VMware. We could probably look at VMware and kind of poke at things, maybe do things differently. But frankly I don't want to have to rearchitect my stack because I want the data science stuff from studio a Sage maker studio because the demand for the business results is coming in from the new capabilities. So this seems to be the trend where the migration is just lift and shifts, keep the operational flow going, foundation and the business value over the top is whatever you guys can bring in from an NSX and then the apps. Is this something that you're hearing more of? Because this points to all of us, the discussion around the platform is irrelevant because the business value is coming in from the data. Yeah. What, how do you guys react to that? Is that something that you're hearing? >>Well, the first thing I would say is the, you know, the pundents will tell you that by 2020 90% of customers will be in a hybrid model. So you know, the migration is, you talk about is in play and, and arguably 2020 will be the year of the most migrations in history if those pendants are correct. Right. And so that gets a lot of customers in the mode of being able to leverage a BMC and then be able to take advantage of all the, you know, the extensive amount of data services we have available. But if you ask me, where do you know, what are the, what are the big reasons driving the migration? It's traditional economics, right? It's, I'm, I don't need to be a capital expense heavy organization anymore. Why do I have to build data centers? Why do I have to extend data centers? Why am I building, why am I buying air conditioning that's not differentiating my business? Right? All of those things are creating drivers for this migration. Now as you begin the migration, that's when you begin to see, wow, imagine the simplicity of the same code base, same operational processes. I don't have to retrain a bunch of people just moving it right onto the cloud and now let me really dig in to the new services available from AWS. Look for those new business. >>I suppose having that focus of differentiation and VMware and saying, let's keep it and expand it to the edge and do things like that. And yeah, absolutely. I mean, listen, I think they had Cerner yesterday on stage and I think it was interesting to hear the CEO, they're talking about three verbs, migrated, modernize, and innovate. I mean that's the thing thing. So I think when you, when you start to see that becoming a very active dialogue, not just from CEOs but from CEOs and boards that are saying, listen, you know, part of the reason we want to move to the cloud is an increase our bruiser agility. It's not just a cost reduction. Yeah. I mean I don't need to have 80 data centers have, I could have half a zero a one or two so that I get, but beyond cost, if we can kind of get agility going faster. >>And for many of these folks, I think when I sit down in their customer advisory councils, when I, when we are advising them, they're all trying to serve their customers better, get data to become sort of the oil of their ability to make decisions better and AI and analytics sort of help in that area. And then of course, getting more efficient in lowering costs and risks. And I think when you're doing it, the scale that both of us have experienced doing, we understand data centers really well. We've software defined them for 20 years. These guys understand cloud probably better than anybody else. When we bring that sort of scale together and as Mike pointed out, a deeply engineered solution, we have a, we have a significant R and D investment in this and we're doing that jointly with them. When I often sit down in our joint QPRs, I joke about it with Mike and Andy and others, I sometimes forget, is that a VMware person speaking or an Amazon person because there's finishing each other's sentences. So there's a lot of that joint trust they've built and we just now have to keep showing that this is a solution that's innovating every three months because you're running on monthly and quarterly cycles and get large customers. I mean to us now, it's less so about the noise of getting everybody on stage. It's much more of a showing customer attraction. >>So I wonder if we could talk about one of the other big problems in the industry. Mikey talked about deep engineering and you guys are, you know, you're never done right, but you've solved that problem or solving that problem of making it easy for customers, VM-ware customers to run in the cloud. There's another big problem it could be concerned about customers is security and there seems to be somewhat of a dissonance. And I wonder if you could share with us maybe some of the thinking around this. So Steven Schmidt for instance, who is Amazon CSO says, Hey, the state of security in the cloud is, is great. And it is, it's, you know, you don't have a lot of technical debt coming in to the game. Pat Gelsinger is saying, Hey, you know, security, the state of security in my world is broken. So what's the conversation with you guys in terms of addressing that big concern on the minds of CEOs? And >>yeah, I'll start and they might feel free to add them. Thomas, I mean we've talked to Steve, we're like Steve, he's a very, he's a, he's an innovator and a thought leader in security. We're coming at it from a place that's complimentary to some of the point of views of, of Amazon. Um, and I shared this at our last VM world discussion. When we look at the, the, the control points of security where traditional security spent network, endpoint, identity, cloud and analytics, those are five, four control points where a lot of security is spent inside the $50 billion security market. We picked two that we're going to do really well. The network and endpoint NSX has been doing really well there. Now granted a bunch of that is on prem. It's replacing or complimenting Cisco, Palo Alto, checkpoint fire, a flash for a railroad bed, F five NetScaler spent. >>And now that business 13,000 customers in has become a 40, 50% of its security use cases. The network we just acquired, carbon black aide runs on the Amazon platform. It runs, uh, a next gen endpoint security. That's, you know, an evolution from the old world of Symantec, McAfee, you know, and there were only two vendors doing this at scale carbon black and CrowdStrike, we built, we built, we bought the better one. So when you put those together and collect a significant amount of telemetry from that, we think we could do something highly differentiated and security. So VMware, his goal and to the extent that Amazon or others are doing things in security that compliment our view of it, we'll build on it, right? Whether it's identity and access tools, whether it's load balancers, whether it's security, event management capabilities. >>Well we're in, we're integrating those two into the security in the cloud, which makes it seamless security, which is critical. >>Goal would be, listen, when we go and when we talked about this is what we're doing, security, we go to Mike and Andy and Steve and said, listen, this is our ambitions and security. We don't view Amazon as a competitor. And that's why he's very much complimented. They'll will be on the fringes. They have a load balancer. We now have a cloud. But that's okay. But that's the bigger part. If they were going off for endpoint security, as we be competitive there, if they were going up in network secure, but they're not. So I think when we share our intents, which we do very openly, we have open kimono sessions. He, this is where we are, this is where we're going. That's what we, and we go deep in that >>trust luck, but this is a historic partnership. This is not a partnership that I've seen anywhere in the industry in my 35 years. This is something that's at the next level and I think you'll look back, history will look back at this partnership and and recognize that its impact on cloud is going to be substantial. >>You hope you guys deserve a lot of credit and again, the critics were critical of the announcement. We were obviously favor, we saw the vision, but I think what surprised me most is that the spend numbers reflect is you guys clarified your cloud play with this move. The customers saluted it 100% they were on board and the numbers are showing it, but as Andy and you guys go to the next level, I got to get your thoughts on this trend of transformation. We have two means. We started in the cube this week. One was if you take the T out of cloud native, it's cloud naive. And the other one is what I said in my post about being reborn in the cloud. So you've got born in the cloud, startups and growth and enterprises were becoming reborn, okay? In the cloud, which means they're transforming. >>So as that trillions of dollars that are coming into the migration, you look at the numbers, there's only 20% of it spend in cloud. Roughly give or take. You're talking about trillions of dollars of new money. You guys are the commercial guys. Hey look, it's still day one for the cloud. It's still day one. I agree. You have a lot of people who might not make the migration, might die of starvation. Okay? As they move to the new model, you guys are out there have to take and you're going to go get that cash. What are you guys seeing? Cause this is a big trillions and trillions of dollars are on the table. You started Mike off. Well look. So, >>you know, uh, Sanjay talked about you see these customers and how enthusiastic they are about the opportunity here, right? And, and Freddie Mac's a great example of 100 million lines of code, and I've got to get out of three data centers in 24 months. Bam, they're out in 10, 10 months, 10 months, right? Um, 100 million lines of code over hundreds of, of applications done in 10 months. Now imagine the rest that the company can do now that they got that behind him, right? And that's what we're seeing is this partnership enables our customers to get a bunch done very economically, much faster, and now they can get onto the other things that they need to do. >>Yeah. And I'd build on that. Listen, you know, we track about a trillion dollars of it spend. And if you add up all of the cloud spend today, it's probably a, I mean, Amazon and Salesforce are probably the biggest in infrastructure and apps. It's probably 150 billion in total cloud spend, maybe 200 billion. So that's 15 to 20% of the total it spend, which is massive, but it's still as, as my points, that's early innings is that 20% it's probably going to become 50% at some point soon, right? If you look at the pace at which the cloud companies are growing, so the key question is, is going to go as 150 billion, the 1 trillion total number is going to grow, but probably a little bit faster and GDP most every 5% max, who's going to go grab that 150 Boone as it goes from 150 billion to 500 billion and the on premise spend slows down. >>Right? Um, I think that, you know, I think Amazon is very well positioned and from our perspective at VMware, we have a, you know, 10 $11 billion business. We're trying to tilt this increasingly more cloud. We announced our earnings call, 13% of it now is hybrid cloud and SAS, that 13% should become 2025 50. They are a pure cloud company. 100% of their businesses is cloud. We're in that transition. But why are we in that transition? Because we see that 150 billion of it spend likely becoming 500 billion. And if we don't get it somebody else's well hybrids, are we a tailwind for you guys? Because outpost is actually a statement that says hybrid at the edge. Now the data centers an edge, you've got edge. What is an edge? So cloud operations is now the standard and we, I mean, we actually coined the term hybrid six years ago and everyone could five, six years ago and everyone really laughed at us and now I think it's being validated. So it's, it's very gratifying now that Amazon has a similar vision to hybrid as us. Uh, we believe both the VMware cloud on Amazon outpost and BMR cloud running on outpost, we're very committed to that joint vision. >>Yeah. You're talking about the spending data and you know, VMware yet another revenue hit. I was pretty consistent in that and that standpoint. But if you look at the spending data, virtually every sort of traditional company with very few exceptions is you're seeing a share shift to the cloud. VMware is an exception. It didn't use to be that way a couple of years ago, but you're embracing the cloud really changed and became, you may cloud a tailwind right now to headwind. >>I think this partnership helped in that area and you put it right, right. Everything in life is either an opportunity or a threat. I think, and I've talked about it in your show before, cloud and containers were a significant threat. When I joined Amazon, sorry, when I was partners with Amazon, I joined VMware six years ago. I asked Pat and I said, listen, I think the threats to VMR, Amazon and Docker in 2013 now Docker is a whole different story. Kubernetes took their head out. Uh, but to our credit we joined credit, we partnered here and I think from our perspective, see, we at VMware aren't able to do a complete pivot like Adobe did to say burn the boats on, on premise and completely shift everything. SAS. Why? Because customers still want NSX on prem. Customers still want our HCI product on prem. People are still buying vSphere on prem. >>So we've got this more delicate balance of starting to shift and on-prem business. The aircraft carrier, you know at the time, 5,000,000,005, six years ago now, 11 billion to something that's a blend of on prem and cloud. While the cloud part grows a lot faster, that 13% of revenue we announced our earnings call is growing 40% yeah. So we can keep that growing foster and foster while the on-prem business is not decaying, it's still growing but not growing at the same pace, plus changing its end, make that transition a few years from now to being a lot more of a cloud company. >>The other thing you're seeing in the spending data, I wonder if you could comment is, you know, digital initiatives really started in earnest, let's say 2016 and people were doing a lot of experimentation. They were throwing everything for the new stuff against the wall. And what we're seeing now is they're narrowing the new and they were keeping the legacy stuff around because they were sort of running in parallel to hedge their bets. What we're seeing now is less experimentation in the new, and they're starting to unplug some of the older stuff. What they're not unplugging is cloud and they're hanging on to VMware and we're seeing, you know, spending levels revert to pre 2018 levels. I wonder what you guys are seeing at the macro. >>Well, the first thing I would say is I see experimentation continuing to accelerate, right? All of the new functionality that we bring out every day. Everybody's excuse, you're the sandbox for us. It's very invigorating because we love people to experiment and, uh, and we, you know, a lot of those experiments turned into amazing new startups as an example. And, or a bunch of those experiments turned into major new project projects in our, in our big, uh, enterprises. So we're continuing to see a real push towards experimentation and driving agility into the business. I don't know. Yeah, >>no, I, well, Mike, I'd agree. I mean, listen, we in some senses, uh, we have a very good strong, you know, on-premise business and when we see a really innovative company that's in the order of 33 35%, that's already 35 three 35 billion growing in the forties 30 to 40% I mean that's incredible. When we see companies like Salesforce and Adobe that are giant SAS companies approaching, you know, 10 1115 20 billion growing 2020 5% I think that infrastructure is a service and SAS business for us are trailblazers of where this cloud is headed now, these, the biggest companies in infrastructure and in SAS and we follow that. Now we have to then navigate to say, listen, the growth rates and the spending is going to be reflected by cloud spend that's heavily spending on there. And the way in which the on premise world is what spending, we have a bunch of hardware companies, we work very closely. >>We're watching how that spending is, is playing OD, whether it's Cisco, whether it's HP, whether it's Lenovo, Dell and others. And then of course we've got VM. We're sitting right in between and I think what we're trying to manage as you got a whole world of on-prem driven primarily by hardware companies. You've got a bunch of these cloud new companies, Amazon, Salesforce, Adobe, and we have a right in the middle saying, okay, listen, we want to be dragged by both while many of our customers still want some on prem. It's a delicate balance, but there's no, um, I mean we are very clear within VMware. We want to be led by a cloud first policy wherever we can. I'll give you an example. Workspace one, manage these devices. We want a company five years ago named AirWatch, why did we buy them versus somebody else? >>It was cloud. It was cloud-first that business now and use a computing has stilted itself to be primarily cloud-based, very subscription-based. It was on premise VDI at the time Mike was at the company six, seven years ago. It's become now completely cloud based on the back of a workspace one, you know, kind of thing. So that's how we're thinking about it. The new acquisitions we've done, whether it's carbon black, whether it's Velo club, it's CloudHealth. They're all cloud-based. Well, you guys made a good bet on cloud operations. That's the real shift. The cloud operation model is right in your wheelhouse. You guys have operators, VMware, you guys have cloud operations everywhere now edge with outpost. Congratulations. I want to say, Sanjay, it's been a great journey with you. You've been with the cube all 10 years. All seven years. We've been actually the 10 year anniversary. >>We've been documenting the history. Wow. The historic moments like you guys together writing AWS, really appreciate it. and of course that was good to see more action coming. Cloud 2.0 next gen. Cloud competition controversies. I mean what? Guys, this is the time where we get to take a deep breath two days under our belts look and reflect on all the news we've covered in a dark to last analysis sessions but also kind of riff on. We got two nights in hallway conversations we learned a lot of the party means do. I learned a lot last night. Dave. I know you. You learned a lots, do you, Thomas? When things that the chatter Certainly twittersphere hashtag the emerald. A lot of action on there, but it's the hallway conversations. It's the party that people have a few cocktails in them day that you start to hear the truth. The real deal comes out, >> No doubt. And and again Jon Stewart, there's real concern over from the from the practitioners we talked to about this acquisition spree. Are they going to be integrated? Are they going to just throw all this stuff at us and keep jamming products and service is down our throats? Or is this going to be a coherent set of solutions that solves our problem? We also had a little little interesting side conversation about, you know, Snowflake, Frank's lumens new company and how basically Frank is bringing back the Pirates from Data Domain and from service. Now Mike Scarpelli is over there. He's a rock star. CFO Beth White is eventually is back over there. And Frank's Lupin. He's the guy who takes companies from, you know, 100 million to a billion, so that's gonna be >> very serious money making him going on there. >> We have been following his career for a number of years now. We watched him take data domain. We watched him pull that that rabbit out of his hat with the sale with net app, and then the emcee swooped in. And then we saw what he did service. Now we've documented this is an individual to watch, you know, >> he's a world class management team member I mean, he's executes. >> Oh, yeah, no doubt. And >> he has >> a formula that's been proven and in time and time again. And to me, the biggest testament salute Min is the success of the continued success of Data Domain. After he left Hey, he really helped clean up the emcees data protection mess. Um, and then the second thing is, look at service now is performance after he left, I haven't missed a beat. And, yeah, John Donahoe, great executive and all, but it's because Frank's Lubin had everything in place and that was a really well run >> dry. And they got a nice little oracle like business model. >> Yeah. No, you're right. They kind of, you know, the big complaint now as well. Your price is too high that Oracle. >> What have you learned? What you hear in the hallways? I mean, a lot of chatter. >> Yes, John, we We've been reflecting back a lot. It's 10 years in 10th year of the Cube here and back here in San Francisco. The new Mosconi, our third show that I've been at this year in Mosconi and we always track year to year. But since it's been what 45 years since we were here for VM World. When I talked to the average vendor. When I talk to you know, the analysts here were like, Oh, thank goodness we're not in Vegas. When I talked to the average attendee, they're like, Oh my God, what happened to San Francisco since last time we were here? It is too expensive. And the experience walking around San Francisco has really not nearly as nice as it might have been five or 10 years ago. And many of them we were talking to, Ah, woman that runs an event that has been Vegas in San Francisco. And she said, Oh, we did in San Francisco and got tremendous feedback. Don't do it there again. Brings back to Vegas both for costs and the enjoyment of being around the environment. >> Where was a shit show here in San Francisco is horrible right now, I got to say to your right eye was walking this morning from my hotel. Literally. A homeless person passed out the middle of the sidewalk. Um, your smells like urine. It's P, and it's It's just I mean, it's really bad this tense now. I mean City of San Francisco is gonna do some. Mosconi, by the way, has been rebuilt. Awesome. So, you know, in terms of the new Mosconi stew, that's a serious upgrade. Hotel rooms are scarce and just the homeless problem. It's just ridiculous. I don't know what they're >> doing. So one of the other big things when I was reflecting coming into here two years ago when VM wear really started down right before the war on AWS announcement, they made a big announcement. IBM because they had sold off the cloud air toe Oh, VH And for two years Oh, VH was a big partner, Talked about that transition, said we handed off this great asset over h isn't here at the show. I was like, Oh, my gosh, you know, that was, you know, such a big story and other companies like New >> 12. That's good. One lets someone who's not at the show and why. Yeah, oh, VH wired to hear >> They aren't here because, well, they've got customers. More of them are in Europe That was supposed to be a big entry into the United States. Obviously, it wasn't as valuable for them to be here, even though I'm sure they're still part of that service provider ecosystem. They have other big one for us, and we've had on the Cube Nutanix. You know, we've had Dheeraj Pandey. First time we had him on was that this show is still the majority of Nutanix. Customers are VM where customers I've talked to lots of Nutanix customers at the event, even part of the analyst event. Some of the customers I talked to were like, Oh, yeah, my hardware stacks Nutanix and amusing NSX. And I'm using other things there. But they are not here. They're not allowed to be at the show. And I >> mean, they were blatantly told they can't come. >> They can't come here. They can't come to the regional things. They can't do the partner things. So that that that relationship is definitely >> from red hat. What kind of presence have you seen from Red s? >> So their number companies like red Hat that they're kept at a lower level of sponsorship. So they're here. They participate, you know. Open shift, of course, is you know, big enemy for cloud native. Lots of open shift runs on V sphere. So many of those companies that are part of the ecosystem, but not the ones that they want to celebrate and put front and forward. So it's always interesting kind of walk around on those. Even Microsoft is an interesting relationship for, you know, decades with the M wear. You know, of course, azure they partner with. But hyper V was long a competitors. So, you know, we understand those competitive relationships >> could be interesting. Stew and Dave on the ecosystem Jerry Chan Day when we just doing my interview yesterday on the other set mentioned that the ecosystem reinvents itself the community. The question now is with Delhi emceeing Del Technologies obviously heard Michael Dell essentially laying out his plan, which is he's got. He's trying to keep people distracted, but the bottom line is going to top people putting together the cloud right well service provider model. So you know, that's what he's gonna be a big impact. VM wear the crown jewel of Del Technologies certainly is looking more and more like It's >> well and yesterday remember the first VM world we did in 2010? It was It was del I mean course and see only the time Who's Del? It was H p Yes, the emcee was there, but it was net app. I mean, everybody could've had equal standing yesterday at the keynotes. It was Project Dimension of V M, where cloud on Delhi emcee and long keynotes >> data protection into the VM were >> also it's It's all very heavily, you know, Jeff Clarke has his his thumb on, you know, the the deli emcee folks pushing that through Veum where Michael is orchestrating the whole thing. Pat obviously is allowing it. I was sitting in the audience Next next, Some folks from Netapp they're like, you know, this kind of a bummer. Calvin Sito from h p e tweeted Wow how to stick it in the face of your ecosystem partners. He then later went on Facebook saying, Hey, I love this ecosystem, so sort of balancing it out because, you know, he wants to be a good, good citizen, but clearly the ecosystem partners who basically brought VM where you know, to the the position where it's in through distribution, our little ruffled. Right now you can't blame him, But at the same time, the mandate is clear. Michael Dell is driving his products and his solutions through VM were period the end. And, you know, if you don't like it, leave >> right. They had such great success with V San and VX rail in that joint product development and go to market. If they can replicate that with a number of other solutions, they get that the synergies. If >> you don't like it, don't leave. That leave is worse than that. They say you don't like it, you know, invited you. But >> how about what Pat said yesterday in the Cube about when they announced on Gwen heavily leaned into V san. He said publicly that Joe Tucci was pissed and I hate her. They were going at it so that so that shows you the change, right? I mean, so so so e m. C. When it owned VM where was very cautious about allowing Veum wears a software company to drive value somewhere Now is just acting like a software company. >> Well, I think I mean, I learned last night's do, um and you can appreciate this. I learned that the top executives of'em where are looking heavily and working hard at understanding and drive them kubernetes cloud native thing because this is not a throwaway deal. This is not a you know, far anything that they are investing. They get their top brass tech execs on kubernetes fto. Two big players job. Ada, Craig McCaw calumnies. We know interviews since day one, but I think the cloud native thing is going to be interesting. And I think it's gonna be evolution. I think there's gonna be a very dynamic road thing's gonna be a series, of course, corrections, but directionally they're all in on. They're going for it, they're not. >> And actually, I had a, you know, good discussion with Chad Attack. It's a good friend of the program now working at GM, where for the first time, but came from AMC worked at Pivotal. He said, culturally, such a gap between VM wear don't have to touch your app, you know, move everything along lifted shift is nice and easy versus pivotal, you know must go completely You know, dual programming, you know, agile everything there, so bridging those because there's multiple paths and the rail pharaoh announcement is that would be cloud native stuff that won't necessarily go to the EMS. We're going to retool V EMS to now be a platform for kubernetes so that they have a few passed to bridge or to build towards the future. Here's the >> answer strategy. Discussion That and Rayo Farrell was now running Cloud native. Think this is just really >> ties in the interesting discussion that I had with some folks was that you've essentially got well, Jerry Chen brought this up last time we had him on it and reinventing because >> we have >> a conversation all the time about this Amazon have to go up the stack. And Jerry Chen made a really he said, Look, it they're not They're not gonna become an e r peace offer company. What they're gonna do is give tools to the builders so that they can disrupt Europea. They can disrupt service. Now they can disrupt Oracle. That's their strategy, at least for now. Okay, so what does that say? I think the strategy discussion inside of'em were and and l is about by whatever clouds gonna be 35 to 50% of the market. Fine. And the cloud native abs. Great. But you got this mission critical. E r p is an example. Database saps that are on Prem. What we have to do is keep them there. So we're going to sell to the incumbents and we're going to give them cloud native tools, toe modernize. Those APS have build new acts on Prem, and that's the that is the collision course that's coming. So the big question is, can the cloud native guys and AWS disrupt that >> huge? I've always said I'm is on and like the way they're coming in, a tsunami is coming in. And who's gonna build that sea wall to stop it right? And that's essentially only hope that these guys have. You look at all the competitive strategy. Was Oracle. Whoever just gotta stop it? You can't like >> the sea >> wall. That's a great building. A sea wall I was, I would say, is Is that you know, they're only hope at this point is to, you know, get in the game because see Amazon is the stack. They're not really moving up the stack. You hear that from Cisco and Dale and other people? That's where it's a game of musical chairs. Right now, the music's you know, there's still a lot of shares left, but soon chairs getting pulled away and Cisco Deli emcee VM, where they're all fighting for these big chairs. And one >> thing >> we talked about yesterday is that VM wears very directional, product driven. Otherwise they pick a direction, is a statement of direction and don't really have a lot of meat on the bone. In the product side, Sister is actually in market with service providers there in market with NETWORKINGS to this no vapor there that's installed basis and incumbent business. You have developers Esso Baton talks about suffered to find data center, suffer defined networking. I mean, come on, Really. I mean, they're getting there, but it didn't have the complete solution. Cisco >> Coming into this week, I expected here a bit more about the progress and all the customers of'em wear on AWS and feel like Vienna actually downplayed the AWS. We know what a strong partnership it is at every Amazon show we go to, and we got a lot of them Now there's a big presence there, and I can talk to customers that are starting to roll out and move there, but it felt like it was David's. You pointed out there are some messaging differences when you talk about multi cloud and how they're positioning it. So, you know, put those >> here Amazon. If your Amazon you're not happy with Microsoft Dell Technologies World The big announcement that was positioned a cloud foundation Although it wasn't a joint engineering, But the press picked it up as though the Amazon deal has been replicated with Microsoft and Google. I mean, you gotta be gotta be hurt if your Amazon >> So I've I've just been taking notes this this event, there's I've noted at least five major points of difference between a W s what they're saying and their philosophy and the anywhere so eight of us. We know they they don't talk multi cloud. They've told their partners, If you're doing joint marketing with us, you cannot say multi cloud aws that reinforce John. We saw this. Steven Schmidt said that this narrative that security is broken doesn't help the industry. Security's not broken, you know, we're doing great. The state of the nation is wonderful. Aws Matt. Not really. I agree. By the way. Uh, that's not the case. I agree with Pat saying Security's broken. It's a do over VM where wants to be the best infrastructure and developer software company. Who's the best infrastructure and software development platform. Eight of us. The M one wants to be the security cloud. Who's the security cloud? Eight of us. And then, uh, they talked about 10,000 cloud data Listeners are those really cloud data centers at Vienna. And the last one was this was a little nuanced Veum was talking about We know about migrating, modernize, lifted ship shift and then modernize The empire's not talking about modernize and then migrate. If you want to. I totally in conflict >> as a collision course. That's got Look, look, look at the data center was Look, it looks like we're going. We're going away, right to the data center. Staying. That's music to Michael Dell's VM. Where's years they live in the Data City? Do you pointed out yesterday? Data Senate goes away. So does begin. Where's business? >> One of things. I'm surprised. I'm wondering you both have talked to some of the service fighter telco pieces of'em, where they're doing that project dimension, which is the VM where stack on del that looks just like outposts on. And I know they had deployments on this for months. If I was them, you know, it's everybody's hearing about Outpost to talk about it, being more like we're already doing it in. This has you in that Amazon ecosystem. It might be a little strong for the Amazon story, but have you been hearing any about that this week? >> I think they keep a lot of cards close to the chest, but it's clear from the announces that they're doing certainly del the VM, where on Delhi Emcee Cloud or whatever it's called, it's not a cloud but their their infrastructure that is essentially a managed service. That's gonna be really strong for I t. People, because I think that the value proposition of going toe i t and saying we have this, you don't need to do anything. It's very strong, I mean, because I didn't want him >> and justified because this the project to mention it is that single, that thinner stack like what we saw on Outpost in the Amazon video, as opposed to Veum, where cloud on AWS, which is the full C i r h d. I stack. >> I haven't heard anything still on >> well, but the conversation I had from from Vienna, where standpoint, they could make money on that manage service. That's why it's the preferred partnership, right? And so that's their part of their cloud play. If you don't have a public cloud, I said this yesterday, you have to redefine Cloud and you have to get into cloud service. And that's what's happening. And that's exactly what's happening. And what I like about what V M where is doing is they are transitioning their model to a sass based model. Now it's only 12 and 1/2 percent of the revenues today. But both pivotal and carbon black are gonna add, you know, ah, $1,000,000,000 next year to that subscription based $3 billion in year two. Um, and so you know, Pat said the other day, I think we could get to 50 50. I don't necessarily think in the near term we're gonna go beyond that. It's not the Adobe >> way could be critical. Critical of'em were in some areas, but I gotta tell you their core strength that they went to a software operators on the data center friend of prices. That's been a great strategy. Focusing on their core building from there is Jerry 10 point out adding other products so their software company, So I think they're really got a good solution. And you? The data shows that people are increasing their spending, John. Just one based on >> that. Because I had a couple of really good conversation with customers, customers that would deploy VCF So they've got the full stack on there. So using H C I, but not necessarily on Dell hardware, could be Cisco Hardware. Could be HB hardware in the like or they're buying NSX. But the virtual ization team owns it, and they get kind of put in. A box storage team says That's not the array I'm used to buy. Well, maybe I'll put a pure storage box and put it in between. The networking team says I'm refreshing my Cisco hardware. You know, we're like, but we have NSX, and it's great. Well, you can use NSX over there. We're going to use a C I over here. So the term I heard from a number of customers is organizations still have hardware to find roles, and they're trying to figure out how to move to that software world. Which hurts me, cause I spent years trying to get beyond silos and helping people you know, move through those environments. And still, in 2019 it's a big challenge. That organizational shift is we know how tough that is. >> So just couple points in the data, because you're right. There are some countervailing trends, though. So, yes, people are spending Maurin VM where in the second half. But at the same time, the data shows that cloud is hurting VM wear spend. So this that's kind of gets interesting. Our containers gonna kill VM where? No, there's no evidence that container's air hurting VM where spend. But there's clearly risks there, you know, as we've talked about who's best position of multi cloud. Well, it turns out three guys with the public cloud are best positioned in multi Google and Microsoft on, and so and then the pivotal thing is interesting, and ties ties all this in so that the data is actually really interesting. It's like you're seeing tugs at both sides, and I think your your notion about the seawall is dead on. That's exactly what they're doing. >> You see that with Oracle's trying to stop jet. I just want they can't win this one to stop Amazon just on the tracks gave great data. Great reporting, Stoop. Good observations. Help that I got cloud in the brain. Gentlemen, welcome to the Cube. Thank you much for coming on, Luis. Let's start with you. Uh, a little bit about Cardinal Health. What you guys air are all about. Tell us about the business. Sure. >> Uh, Cardinal Health is a global supply chain medical products services company. We service hospitals, pharmacies throughout the world. We're drivers are delivering cost effective solutions to our two patients right throughout the world. >> Awesome. We're gonna get into that, Anthony, you've been in the Cube a couple times here almost a year since we were last at this show. it's grown quite a bit. Good thing Mosconi is new and improved. He's got all these new customers here. Give us the update. On what? Look back a year, What's transpired? One of the highlights for you. >> Open it up. You know, we've achieved a tremendous amount. I mean, you know, we were a Google partner of the year, which was quite nice. Wasn't even award for the hard work? You know, we have a very special relationship with Google. We actually engineer directly into the Google console, our services that their products that are sold by Google, which gives us a very unique value proposition. We just keep adding, you know, we have more services and we had more regions on. We continue to sort of differentiate the basic services that that customers are now using for secondary workloads and increasingly very large primary work. Look all >> right, we're going to get into it and learn more about the partnership. But but thinking about what's going on, a cardinal health question for you, Lewis is one of the drivers in your business that are affecting your technology strategy and how you're dealing with those. >> Sure, there's a few things on. I'm sure this is the same in many industries, right? We're facing cost pressures. We need to deliver solutions at a lower cost than we have been in the past. We need to move faster. We need to have agility to be able to respond to changes in the market place. So on Prem doesn't didn't give us a lot of that flexibility to turn those lovers in any of those three areas that those three things have really driven our push into the cloud. All >> right, Louis, let let's dig into that a little bit. You could kind of Do you still have on Prem as part of your solution way? Still have >> some eso We've been working over the past two years to my great work loads out of our data center into the cloud. We're about eighty percent of the way there. There's gonna be some workloads. I Siri's doesn't run in the cloud. Very well. You know, we've got Cem >> Way. Were just joking about that earlier today. Yes, yes, yes. Lots of things. But in the back corner somewhere, I've got that icier running or the day working on that Anthony way. >> Blessed with blessed. You know, this is a customer of ours, and way enabled him to run some, you know, pretty heavy on Prem workloads that required NFS can now run, you know, production on Google clouds. So >> yeah, and you're basically trying to make that experience Seamus Wright A cz muchas. You can wait. Talk about that. That partnership with Google, What are the challenges that you guys are tryingto tackle? I'm just going to refer to your >> question. I mean, you know, what we see is that there's a sort of a pivot with the clouds that traditional i t people thought horizontally and they try and sort of you had a storage team and you had a security team and you had a networking team in the cloud. It's sort of pivots ninety degrees, and you have people who don't work clothes on the workload. People are experts in every single thing, and so they go to the cloud, assuming that the cloud itself will take care of a lot of that problem for So we worked with Google and we built a service. We didn't We didn't build it for a storage guy tow, configure. And you know it undo the bolts and nuts way built it like dial tone. That there is. The NFS is always on in Google Cloud and you come and provisioned an end point and you just tell us how much capacity you want and how much performance. And that's it. It takes about eight seconds to establish a volume in Ghoul Cloud that may take through, you know, trouble tickets, and I t capital purchases about six months to do. >> Yeah, Anthony. Actually, one of my favorite interviews last year is I talked to Dave Hits at your event, and he talked about when we first started building it. We build something that storage people would love, and you shot him down and said, No, no, no, This needs to be a cloud first Clouds absolution. Louis, I want to poke at you. You actually said Price is a main driver for cloud agility. Absolutely. But bring this inside a little bit. I know you're speaking at the show a year. You know, people always say, it's like, Hey, you know, cloud isn't easy. Is it cheap? Well, you know, Devil's in the details there. So would love to hear your experience there. And you know how you know less expensive translates in your world? Sure. >> So when we were looking for something, we tried to get away from Nasim. We're moving to the cloud and we just can't do it right There's way have a lot of cots, applications, a lot of processes that you just have to have known as right and we're looking for something Is Anthony described that with a click of a button are developers Khun spin up their own storage. The price point was lower than then. Frankly, you could get just provisioning the type of disk that you need in the cloud fur, and that was acceptable for most of our workloads. The the the ability to tear right. There's through three classes of storage and in the cloud volume services. Most of our workloads are running on the standard tear, but we've got some workloads where they've got higher performance and we provisioned them right on the standard. And when that you're doing, they're testing like, hey, we need a little bit more with a click of a button there at a higher tier of storage. No downtime, no restarting, no moving storage. It's I just worked. So the cost, the agility were getting all of that out of the solution to >> manage those laces, that sort of, ah, sort of automated way or you sort of monitoring things. And what's the process for for managing, which slays the slaves on the different tiers of storage. If >> we provide him, Yeah, we're not. We're not money for s. >> So it's all automated. >> Run it. And we stand by guarantees throughput guarantees on we take the pain away. You know, I always like to say, you know, what people want to do in the public cloud is innovate, not administrator. And generally, you know. So when when people say clouds cheaper, it's because I think they've decided that they're better use of the dollar is in application development, data science, and then they can retire people and put application developers into the business. So what ghoul does, I think incredibly well as it has infrastructure to remove the sort of the legacy barrier and the traditional stuff. And then it has this wonderful new innovation that, you know, maybe a few companies in the world could decide could use it. But most people couldn't afford to put TP use or GP use in their data center, so they know he was really two very strong Valley proposition. >> And maybe what they're saying is when they say the cloud is cheaper, maybe is better are why I'm spending money elsewhere. That's give me a better return. >> I do things that make you different. Not the same, right, >> right, right. So storage strategy. I mean, I'm sure there should be such a thing anymore. Work illustrated back in the day when used to work A DMC was II by AMC for Block Net out for file Things have changed in terms of how you run a strategy. Think about your business. So what is your strategy when you think about infrastructure and storage and workloads? >> So we really don't want to have to focus on an infrastructure strategy, right? Right now we're mostly running traditional workloads in the cloud running on PM's. We're working towards getting a lot of work loads into geeky, using that service and in Google Cloud platform, >> so can you just step back for a second? How do you end up on Google? Why'd you choose them versus some of the alternative out there. >> So we started our cloud journey a couple of years ago. Started out with really the main cloud player in town, like most people have. Um, and about a year in, not all of our needs were being met. You know, they that company entered decided to enter our business segment. S O, you know, starts asking some questions. People start asking some questions there. So that prompted us to do an r f p to try to see technologically really, were we on the right cloud cloud platform? And we compared the top three cloud providers and ended up on GP from a technological decision, not just a business decision. It gave us the ability to have a top level organization where we could provisioned projects to application teams. They could work autonomously within those projects, but we still had a shared VPC, a shared network where we could put Enterprise Guard rails in place to protect the company. >> Dominic Price was on earlier with Google and he was saying some nice things about net happened. I'd like to hear your perspective is why Ned App What's unique about Nana. What's so special about net app in the cloud. Sure, a few of the >> things that Anthony talked about were really differentiators for us. We didn't have to go sign a Pio with another company, and we didn't need to commit to a certain amount of storage. We didn't need to build our own infrastructure. Even in the cloud, the service was just there. You do a little bit of up front, set up to connect your networking and weaken prevision storage whenever we want. We can change the speed the through. Put that we're getting on that storage at any point in time. We congrats. That storage with no downtime. Those are all things that were really different and other solutions that were out there. >> I mean, it's interesting infrastructure. Tio was really still even in a cloud. It's kind of like a bunch of Lego blocks on what we always said it was. You know, people want to buy the pirate ship, you know, they don't want to, like, have to dig in all these bins. And so we sort of said, Let's build storage, Kind of like a pirate ship that you just know that the end result is a pirate ship and I don't have to understand how to pick a ll Those pieces. Someone's done that for me. So, you know, we're really trying, Teo. I was I'd say we like to create easy buns. You know, people just hit the easy button and go. Someone else is going to make sure it's there. Someone else is going to make sure it performs. I am just a consumer off it, >> Anthony Wave talkto you and Ned app. You play across all the major cloud providers out there and you've got opinion when it comes to Kerber Netease, Help! Help! Help! Give us the you know where what you think about what you've heard this weekend. Google. You know, I think how they differentiate themselves in the market. >> You know, I think it's great, you know, that Google, I think open source community. So I think that was a ninja stry changing event. And, you know, I think community's really starts to redefine application development. I think portability is obviously a big thing with it, But But for an application, developer of the V. M. Was something that somebody added afterwards, and it was sort of like, Oh, no way overboard infrastructure. So now we'Ll virtual eyes it But the cost of virtual izing things was so expensive, you know, you put a no s in a V m and communities was, was built and was sort of attracted to the developer. And so the developers are coding and re factoring, and I just You just look around now and you just see the ground swell on Cuban cnc f is here, and the contributions that were being made to communities are astonishing. It's it's reached a scale way bigger than Lennox. The amount of innovation that's going into cos I think is unstoppable. Now it's it's going to be the standard if it isn't already >> Well, Louis, I'd love you to expand. You said it sounded like you moved to the cloud first, but now you're going down that application modernization, you know, how does Cooper Netease fit into that? And what what other pieces? Because it's changing the applications and get me the long pole in the tent and modernization. So >> cardinal took the approach of we need to get everything into the cloud. And then we can begin modernizing our applications because if we tried to modernize everything up front, would take us ten to fifteen years to get to the cloud, and we couldn't afford to do that. So lifting and shifting machines was about seventy eighty percent of our migration to the cloud. What we're looking at now is modern, modernizing some of her applications R E commerce solution will be will be running on Cooper. Nettie is very shortly on DH will be taking other workloads there in the future. That's definitely the next step. The next evolution >> Okuda Cloud or multi Cloud? That is the question way >> are multi cloud. There are, you know, certain needs that can only be met in certain clouds, right? So Google Cloud is our primary cloud provider. But we're also also using Amazon for specific >> workloads and used net up across those clouds erect. Okay, so is that What's that like? Is that nap experience across clouds so still coming together? Is it sort of highly similar? What's experience like? >> So it's it's using that app in both solutions is the same. I think there's some stuff that we're looking forward to, that where where things will be tied together a little bit more and >> that brings me to the road map Question. That's Please get your best people working on that. >> Oh, yeah. No, no. I mean, I So, look, I think storages that sort of wonderful business because, you know, data is heavy, it's hard, it doesn't like to be moved, and it needs to be managed. It's It's the primary asset of your business these days. So So we have we have, you know, we released continuously new features onto the service. So, you know, we've got full S and B nfs support routing an FSB four support routing a backup service. We're integrating NFS into communities, which is a very frequently asked response. A lot of companies developers want to build ST collapse and Block has a real problem when the container failed. NFS doesn't So we're almost seeing a renaissance with communities and NFS So So you know, we just we subscribe to that constant innovation and we'll just continue to build out mohr and more services that that allow I think cloud customers to, as I said, to sort of spend their time innovating while we take care of the administration for them >> two thousand six to floor. And I wrote a manifesto on storage is a service. Yeah, I didn't know it. Take this long, but I'm glad you got there. Last question, Lewis. Cool stuff. You working on fun projects? What's floating your boat these days? >> My time these days is, uh, the cloud. As I said, we went to the cloud for cost for cost savings. You can spend more money than you anticipate in the cloud. I know it's a shocker. So that's one of the things that I'm focusing our efforts on right now is making sure that way. Keep those costs under control. Still deliver the speed and agility. But keep an eye on those things >> that they put a bow on. Google next twenty nineteen. Partner of the year. That's awesome. Congratulations. Thank >> you. Uh, you know, I would say, you know, to put in a bone it's great to see Thomas again. You know, I went to Thomas that Oracle for about six and a half years. He's an incredibly bright man on DH. I think he's going to do a lot of really good things for Google. As you know, I work for his twin brother, George on DH. They are insanely bright people and really fun to work with. So for me, it was great to come up here and see Thomas and I shook hands when we won the award, and it was kind of too really was like, you know, we're both in a Google event. >> Yeah, it was fun. I'm gonna make an observation. I was saying the studio in the Kino today. They were both Patriots fans. So Bill Bala check. He has progeny. Coaches leave. They try to be him. It just doesn't work. Thomas Curie is not trying to be Larry. I'm sure they, you know, share a lot of the same technical philosophies and cellphone. But he's got his own way of doing things in his own style. You know, I always like to say, you know, what people want to do in the public cloud is And maybe what they're saying is when they say the cloud is cheaper, maybe is better are why I do things that make you different. have changed in terms of how you run a strategy. So we really don't want to have to focus on an infrastructure strategy, so can you just step back for a second? S O, you know, starts asking some questions. Give us give us the data here because a I anywhere in the center of the announcements we have a story up on. Slick earnings have been reported on CNBC. John Ford was here earlier talking to Ginny. This is a course centerpiece of it. Aye, aye. On any cloud. This highlights the data conversation you've been part of. Now, I think what seven years seems like more. But this is now happening. Give us your thoughts. >> Go back to basics. I've shared this with you before. There's no AI without IA, meaning you need an information architecture to support what you want to do in AI. We started looking into that. Our thesis became so clients are buying into that idea. The problem is their data is everywhere onpremise, private cloud, multiple public clouds. So our thesis became very simple. If we can bring AI to the data, it will make Watson the leading AI platform. So what we announced wtih Watson Anywhere is you could now have it wherever your data is public, private, any public cloud, build the models, run them where you want. I think it's gonna be amazing >> data everywhere and anywhere. So containers are big role in This is a little bit of a deb ops. The world you've been living in convergence of data cloud. How does that set for clients up? What are they need to know about this announcement? Was the impact of them if any >> way that we enable Multi Cloud and Watson anywhere is through IBM cloud private for data? That's our data Micro services architectural writing on Cooper Netease that gives you the portability so that it can run anywhere because, in addition Teo, I'd say, Aye, aye, ambitions. The other big client ambition is around how we modernize to cloud native architectures. Mohr compose herbal services, so the combination gets delivered. Is part of this. >> So this notion of you can't have a eye without a it's It's obviously a great tagline. You use it a lot, but it's super important because there's a gap between those who sort of have a I chops and those who don't. And if I understand what you're doing is you're closing that gap by allowing you to bring you call that a eye to the data is it's sort of a silo buster in regard. Er yeah, >> the model we use. I called the eye ladder. So they give it as all the levels of sophistication an organization needs to think about. From how you collect data, how you organize data, analyze data and then infused data with a I. That's kind of the model that we used to talk about. Talk to clients about that. What we're able to do here is same. You don't have to move your data. The biggest problem Modi projects is the first task is OK move a bunch of data that takes a lot of time. That takes a lot of money. We say you don't need to do that. Leave your data wherever it is. With Cloud private for data, we can virtualized data from any source. That's kind of the ah ha moment people have when they see that. So we're making that piece really >> easy. What's the impact this year and IBM? Think to the part product portfolio. You You had data products in the past. Now you got a eye products. Any changes? How should people live in the latter schism? A kind of a rubric or a view of where they fit into it? But what's up with the products and he changes? People should know about? >> Well, we've brought together the analytics and I units and IBM into this new organization we call Dayton ay, ay, that's a reflection of us. Seen that as two sides of the same coin. I really couldn't really keep them separate. We've really simplified how we're going to market with the Watson products. It's about how you build run Manager II watching studio Watson Machine Learning Watson Open scale. That's for clients that want to build their own. Aye, aye. For clients that wants something out of the box. They want an application. We've got Watson assistant for customer service. Watson Discovery, Watson Health Outset. So we've made it really easy to consume Watson. Whether you want to build your own or you want an application designed for the line of business and then up and down the data, stack a bunch of different announcements. We're bringing out big sequel on Cloudera as part of our evolving partnership with the new Cloudera Horn Works entity. Virtual Data Pipeline is a partnership that we've built with active fio, so we're doing things at all layers of the last. >> You're simplifying the consumption from a client, your customer perspective. It's all data. It's all Watson's, the umbrella for brand for everything underneath that from a tizzy, right? >> Yeah, Watson is the Aye, aye, brand. It is a technology that's having an impact. We have amazing clients on stage with this this week talking about, Hey, Eyes No longer. I'd like to say I was not magic. It's no longer this mystical thing. We have clients that are getting real outcomes. Who they II today we've got Rollback of Scotland talking about how they've automated and augmented forty percent of their customer service with watching the system. So we've got great clients talking about other using >> I today. You seen any patterns, rob in terms of those customers you mentioned, some customers want to do their own. Aye, aye. Some customers wanted out of the box. What? The patterns that you're seeing in terms of who wants to do their own. Aye. Aye. Why do they want to do their own, eh? I do. They get some kind of competitive advantage. So they have additional skill sets that they need. >> It's a >> It's a maker's mark. It is how I would describe it. There's a lot of people that want to make their own and try their own. Ugh. I think most organizations, they're gonna end up with hundreds of different tools for building for running. This is why we introduced Watson Open Scale at the end of last year. That's How would you manage all of your A II environments? What did they come from? IBM or not? Because you got the and the organization has to have this manageable. Understandable, regardless of which tool they're using. I would say the biggest impact that we see is when we pick a customer problem. That is widespread, and the number one right now is customer service. Every organization, regardless of industry, wants to do a better job of serving clients. That's why Watson assistant is taking off >> this's. Where? Data The value of real time data. Historical data kind of horizontally. Scaleable data, not silo data. We've talked us in the past. How important is to date a quality piece of this? Because you have real time and you have a historical date and everything in between that you had to bring to bear at low ladened psi applications. Now we're gonna have data embedded in them as a feature. Right. How does this change? The workloads? The makeup of you? Major customer services? One piece, the low hanging fruit. I get that. But this is a key thing. The data architecture more than anything, isn't it? >> It is. Now remember, there's there's two rungs at the bottom of the ladder on data collection. We have to build a collect data in any form in any type. That's why you've seen us do relationships with Mongo. D B. Were they ship? Obviously with Claude Era? We've got her own data warehouse, so we integrate all of that through our sequel engine. That thing gets to your point around. Are you gonna organize the data? How are you going to curate it? We've got data catalogue. Every client will have a data catalogue for many dollar data across. Clouds were now doing automated metadata creation using a I and machine learning So the organization peace. Once you've collected it than the organization, peace become most important. Certainly, if you want to get to self service analytics, you want to make data available to data scientists around the organization. You have to have those governance pieces. >> Talk about the ecosystem. One of the things that's been impressive IBM of the years is your partnerships. You've done good partners. Partnership of relationships now in an ecosystem is a lot of building blocks. There's more complexity requires software to distract him away. We get that. What's opportunities for you to create new relationships? Where are the upper opportunities for someone a developer or accompanied to engage with you guys? Where's the white spaces? Where is someone? Take advantage of your momentum and you're you're a vision. >> I am dying for partners that air doing domain specific industry specific applications to come have them run on IBM cloud private for data, which unleashes all the data they need to be a valuable application. We've already got a few of those data mirrors. One sensing is another one that air running now as industry applications on top of IBM Club private for data. I'd like to have a thousand of these. So all comers there. We announced a partnership with Red Hat back in May. Eventually, that became more than just a partnership. But that was about enabling Cloud Private, for data on red had open shift, So we're partnered at all layers of the stack. But the greatest customer need is give me an industry solution, leveraging the best of my data. That's why I'm really looking for Eyes V. Partners to run on Ivan clubs. >> What's your pitch to those guys? Why, why I should be going. >> There is no other data platform that will connect to all your data sources, whether they're on eight of us as your Google Cloud on premise. So if you believe data is important to your application. There's simply no better place to run than IBM. Claude Private for data >> in terms of functionality, breath o r. Everything >> well, integrating with all your data. Normally they have to have the application in five different places. We integrate with all the data we build the data catalogue. So the data's organized. So the ingestion of the data becomes very easy for the Iast V. And by the way, thirdly, IBM has got a pretty good reach. Globally, one hundred seventy countries, business partners, resellers all over the world, sales people all over the world. We will help you get your product to market. That's a pretty good value >> today. We talk about this in the Cube all the time. When the cloud came, one of the best things about the cloud wasn't allowed. People to put applications go there really quickly. Stand them up. Startups did that. But now, in this domain world of of data with the clouds scale, I think you're right. I think domain X expertise is the top of the stack where you need specially special ism expertise and you don't build the bottom half out. What you're getting at is of Europe. If you know how to create innovation in the business model, you could come in and innovate quickly >> and vertical APS don't scale enough for me. So that's why focus on horizontal things like customer service. But if you go talk to a bank, sometimes customer service is not in office. I want to do something in loan origination or you're in insurance company. I want to use their own underwriting those air, the solutions that will get a lot of value out of running on an integrated data start >> a thousand flowers. Bloom is kind of ecosystem opportunity. Looking forward to checking in on that. Thoughts on on gaps. For that you guys want to make you want to do em in a on or areas that you think you want to double down on. That might need some help, either organic innovation or emanate what areas you looking at. Can you share a little bit of direction on that? >> We have, >> ah, a unique benefit. And IBM because we have IBM research. One of their big announcement this week is what we call Auto Way I, which is basically automating the process of feature engineering algorithm selection, bringing that into Watson Studio and Watson Machine learning. I am spending most of my time figure out howto I continue to bring great technology out of IBM research and put in the hand of clients through our products. You guys solve the debaters stuff yesterday. We're just getting started with that. We've got some pretty exciting organic innovation happen in IBM. >> It's awesome. Great news for startups. Final question for you. For the folks watching who aren't here in San Francisco, what's the big story here? And IBM think here in San Francisco. Big event closing down the streets here in Howard Street. It's huge. What's the big story? What's the most important things happening? >> The most important thing to me and the customer stories >> here >> are unbelievable. I think we've gotten past this point of a eyes, some idea for the future we have. Hundreds of clients were talking about how they did an A I project, and here's the outcome they got. It's really encouraging to see what I encourage. All clients, though, is so build your strategy off of one big guy. Project company should be doing hundreds of Aye, aye projects. So in twenty nineteen do one hundred projects. Half of them will probably fail. That's okay. The one's that work will more than make up for the ones that don't work. So we're really encouraging mass experimentation. And I think the clients that air here are, you know, creating an aspirational thing for things >> just anecdotally you mentioned earlier. Customer service is a low hanging fruit. Other use cases that are great low hanging fruit opportunities for a >> data discovery data curation these air really hard manual task. in Las Vegas this is silicon angles the cube our flagship program when we go out to the events and extract the signal annoys we are at IBM interconnect 2016 it's our fifth year now doing all the IV meds now interconnecting out the cloud show I'm John furrier with my coach Dave vellante our next guest is Eric Herzog vice president of storage and software-defined at IBM welcome back you belong great to see you great thank you very much always loved helping guys out of the cube thank you very much for including us pleasure we are very cognitive today we get cognition going on the cube we have all kinds of real-time we've got api's and notifications or and we're going to stract some insight and predictive and prescriptive analytics from you right first what's going on with storage and software obviously storage right now you're seeing huge change Dell buying EMC which you know a lot about emc IBM buys the weather company two contrasting strategies but Stewart still it's the center of the value proposition we also heard Robert de Blanc say on stage today cheap compute he didn't say cheap storage storage visited it did he didn't say so long about cheap storage okay I stand corrected but you talk about a commoditization of resource still valuable I always said what's wrong with cheap compute want more of it I want more and more compute so storage does he changing the software values their last time we spoke about that what's the update in context to cloud what's the storage equation was a storage angle well for us there's a huge value proposition when both the cognitive side and in the cloud infrastructure side obviously with the tumultuous change in storage both from just where the world is going we believe that you ride the wave a flash and software-defined and that is our mantra as you know one of the industry analyst firms who tracks the numbers we were number one in flash capacity shift and number one in flash units last year are all flash and we've been number one several years in row and software-defined storage so while the storage envelope is changing if you open up that envelope we're writing the change inside that omelet which is flash software to find converged infrastructure with our pure power product and also with our partnership with Cisco on the verses stack that's two years in a row for flash leadership right yes charge same thing with software to bunt well the good thing is well the other guy leads in revenue we believe in a fair price for an outstanding award-winning product line on the software value now the cell where that fits in we had multiple guests on today we had you know Jamie Thomas former GM and storage now thinking a more systems view its horizontally composable infrastructure now our dead loss infrastructure as code how does that change the equation certainly we want storage but now you've got software driving the change where's the wisdom value points there well when you look at the software-defined infrastructure the magic fairy dust is in the software so we can work with our own hardware we can work with our competitors hardware over 300 different raise from our competitors are completely compatible with our software to find solutions for storage and we can use with white box if one of our channel partners our end users would rather have a white box storage bear hard drives from seagate OWD and some some flash and just a wrapper of metal we are software provides the value add for integration into hybrid cloud configurations in the cognitive configurations into the oceans of data and big data and into analytic environments all powered by software-defined storage ok so you've been on less than a year now all right you came on last summer right yes mid year so what nine months roughly yes inland what are the big learnings that you've encountered and then we'll start from there and then we're going to get into result are you going to transfer yeah I think the big learning is the world is evolving and a lot of the customer base hasn't gotten there yet so we're going to take them on that journey with flash software-defined converged infrastructure so we're going to lead that charge we're going to ride the wave not fight the wave sometimes iBM has fought the wave we've changed that in the storage world so we're going to be a leader we're are a leader in flash we're leader and software-defined are converged infrastructure particularly with Cisco had an incredible year last year you know for our first year we had over 250 customers over 400 units sold and while there are others who are bigger in our first year that was one of the best first years in the converging instructor of any vendor and that's the power of our software to find portfolio our flash portfolio and the things we deliver from a storage perspective that helps customers they convert either the software-defined infrastructure or converged infrastructure so that case so that sort of answers the question as to how you're going to deal with immediate it's not unique you got old stuff that's declining you got new stuff that's growing like crazy but still not big enough to offset the decline of the old stuff you got currency headwinds but the there's light at the end of the tunnel in terms of that transformation to those newer architectures is that fair yes absolutely last year if you look whether it was in the channel with our award from computer reseller news as the best enterprise storage provider in the world and that was in the fall of 2015 so when you look at the channel and what they're looking for from their provider unlike the guys in hopkinton in Austin who are merging they didn't win that IBM one that so great solution for our Channel Partner base we've won awards for software-defined for all flash we did very well in the hybrid or a category last year with several product of the Year awards so again yes we have an older installed base one of our big goals this year is to refresh that installed base with software-defined with all flash with a comprehensive family of hybrid raise to make sure that people understand this is where the market is going this is where you need to go to drive cognitive value hybrid cloud value quite honestly it's all about applications workloads and use cases and even though I've done storage for 31 years let's face it most CEOs can't stand storage have to put it in the language that they understand which is software value-add and how it can enhance their ability to meet the business SLA s that the CIO is under pressure from the VP of Operations the VP of Marketing the finance side and of course ultimately the CEO so in this business I've been in the business maybe not 31 years but maybe 35 okay so the product portfolio is very very important one of the criticisms I've had of IBM over the years has been just not enough product innovation coming out great R&D but doesn't hit the pipeline so when you came to see us in Boston you showed us a little you know glimpse of the roadmap and it's very clear that's accelerating I wonder if you could talk about that what can you share with our audience sure we've done it we've done a couple things first of all we have the flash religion we acquired a flash company get started but so did several of our competitors in addition to spending money on that acquisition we've invested over a billion dollars in engineering resources on the flash site software-defined we're spending a billion dollars in that as you know we recently bought the award-winning and market-leading object storage technology with clever safe and we spent money on that so IBM is putting its money where its mouth is its focus is on storage and how storage enhances hybrid clouds cognitive big data analytics and you know deals with these oceans of data that our customers are facing and how do you manage that and how do you make the data more valuable and more productive to the business because that's what about it's not about storage it's about the management that data to optimize our customers business and how we can deliver that with effective cost so clever save was mentioned in the keynote in context to LeBlanc's reference to the digital transport transit of you know new stream the video stuff interesting how he plugged in clever see how it is that relate I mean honestly I know it's a recent acquisition is it's just the objects towards an unstructured data why is clever stay plugged into that kind of portfolio of those four companies you mentioned around you know is when you develop that type of technology you end up with incredible amounts of data and an object store is designed to handle exabytes of capacity and exabytes of information it doesn't necessarily have to be fast for example video surveillance data and all kinds of other data may be hot for a while and one of the values of clever say for example is on our spectrum scale product which is our scale out network attached storage actually will automatically cheer too clever safe we're in a public beta right now our spectrum protect product we've also talked about is going to support clever safe either as an source so you could back it up but more importantly as a target so you could take gobs of data and back it up into a clever safe repository when you've got oceans of data and people are generating exabytes and exabytes of data what you can get with clever safe on premises or in a cloud configuration allows you to handle this extensive data growth cost-effectively and in an easy to manage and configure way about the end where relationship with storage obviously there in an announcement today with IBM EMC recently had an announcement with VMware and VX rail rom and the big debate was I see his hybrid cloud was deposition using their software stack to be a glue and into the hybrid cloud journey but one of the comments that we made note of that we captured on the prowl chat was from Keith Townsend one of our members of our community he wrote it took Netflix seven years to move to the public cloud meaning everything all flash they had one of the first all flesh implementations that Amazon ever rolled out what does that mean for the average VMware customer in this case IBM customer from a product perspective so you got you know your relationship VMware you have this notion of hybrid cloud right it took Netflix seven years there in the cutting edge what does that mean for the average customer this whole notion of using software in storage plugging the hybrid cloud it took them seven years was it 70 years for an average company well you've got to remember that that started a while ago and the move to the hybrid cloud is just accelerated dramatically so our spectrum scale product our spectrum accelerate product our spectrum protect product all are designed for hybrid cloud configurations right this minute they're easy to employ they're easy to use they're all available in softlayer they're also filled with other cloud providers spectrum protect as close to a hundred different msps and csps who provide backup and archive services with award-winning spectrum protect so our specialist families and I've different than it was seven years ago today actually its accelerated easy-to-deploy it's easy to use you have a wide choice of msps and csps to use whether it's soft layer or other providers in the industry and our software-defined storage supports all of that vendor base regardless of whether it's IBM SoftLayer or other cloud providers as well well you could argue to Netflix did it at a time when it was early days right it was near the Pioneer they were they were final trees hack and you know right they're the ones with the arrows in motion tracking chaos monkeys everywhere so so Tommy you guys okay all right sorry John I want to talk about the state of the industry it's a lot of interesting stuff going on even in the business for four decades you understand some of the trends you've seen a lot of the ebb and the flow how would you describe where we're at right now seems like an uncertain time so storage is incredibly tumultuous right now one of the good things about storage it's constantly filled with innovation as you know from my past I've done seven startups thank God five have been acquired so I can wear a Hawaiian shirt they're expensive these days ISA why insurance so every five six years you have a wave of startups of the storage business that's not common in most other segments of the IT market space but in storage it is so you have a constant wave of startups that happens on a normal basis and we're in one of those phases right now at the same time you have massive change in the Tier one vendor base EMC and Dell emerging HP splits into two network appliance which had been an incredibly great company it's fast has now missed their numbers almost eight quarters in Rowan just last week announced they're laying off 1500 people so the world is changing dramatically also the applications workloads and use cases are changing dramatically so you've gone to a cognitive ear you don't have cereal management of data you now have parallel management of data you don't want databases that react or let's say a data warehouse it takes 30 hours to run a report you want the report to run in one so if you will real-time cognitive data availability and ability to analyze that data and that is dramatically changing what startups are out how successful they'll be how the tier 1 vendors are reacting you know for example one of the great things about IBM is we are focused on flash which is the fastest grain storage systems market and software to find which was one of the fastest growing storage software markets and we're leaders in both market spaces so when you open up the envelope of what's inside storage it's a slow growth market three to four percent per year is all it's growing but certain segments are growing rapidly and IBM focuses on those rapid growth segments now but the cloud piece right so you make you guys are talking about clever safe before I was thought that was a cloud acquisition which it was in part right but it's also something that falls into the storage portfolio right and that's because clever safe can be configured in a number of different ways on-premises only cloud only or hybrid configuration we can have an on-premises clever safe configuration talking to a cloud-based configuration so again part of IBM strategy to make sure that from a storage perspective all of our software to find infrastructure and what we acquired with clever safe are designed for hybrid cloud configurations or private cloud configurations or public again our spectrum family is used by hundreds of public cloud service writers to deliver a backup service for example a spectrum protect so the reason my question was this very clearly in effect on that you talked about three percent or whatever you know the the latest numbers are it's flat Marcus gases and flat is flat but the cloud market of course is growing like that from a smaller base but it's clearly having an impact on demand is that a fair statement yeah I think what's happening when you look at it from a storage perspective where you're really having the biggest impact on cloud is in the lower end in the entry space yes the capacity is growing exponentially but whether it's the department level of a giant at global fortune 500 whether it's Herzog's bar and grill or a midsize company when they need a small array a lot of times are going to a public cloud configuration so that low end of the market is shrinking at the same time when you do software-defined if you're one of the tier 1 vendors the storage could come from off-the-shelf hard drives so the values in the software but that also delivers a revenue hit to the vendor base and Ashley when you think about how would you get incredible performance five or six years ago you would have bought an array that was five to eight million dollars best case if not closer to 10 you'd be lucky if you could get 200,000 I ops maybe you could get five milliseconds latency today at an average sale place of 300,000 dollars we can deliver over a million I ops and sub hundred micro center and latency so you don't need to buy your big iron at five eight 10 million you can do it with something for three hundred thousand dollars huge the bottleneck John okay I mean this is back to our kena brian.krall from Apple was on stage another great company leaders in the delivering great value but he made a comment I want to get your reaction to because I know it's a phone analogy but I want to bring into storage if the values and the software and all flash is the bet you guys are making the numbers are impressive in terms of performance in terms of I ops throughput and and cost per puss per megabyte he said you got to get closer to the hardware to write your native apps and he's referring to the iphone software app using Swift and xcode to the hardware so in storage look different how does the software piece take advantage of the hardware and is that built-in is an obstacle the customer because we're seeing this notion of okay take care of it take advantage of the hardware so what was how do you reconcile the we've done some very strong things there so let's take for example our spectrum virtualized software spectrum virtualize allows enterprise class data services across heterogeneous storage environments hours our competitors and anything that's white box over 300 arrays we have taken the spectrum virtualized platform and integrate it into our v nine thousand flash systems all-flash array into our mid tier storwize v7000 and our mid tier storwize v5000 which we just launched last week three new configurations we also have the sand volume controller but what we've done is integrate that spectrum virtualized software which rides a virtual back end of all storage not just our own provides a single way to replicate a single way to snapshot transparent block migration on the fly and integrate that right into flash systems and storwize as a software comes as a hard annick Stauffer comes with it exactly it's built into the size of Jeff managed as a code or estructuras code like an apple programa billion native app to the iphone what does that develop or doing with you guys is it through that software layer or how they could be right i mean the key thing when you look from a DevOps perspective they want to quickly be able to provision storage okay and with things like all the spectrum family and with the gooeys we've implemented into our store wise our XIV and all of our storage products it's very easy to deploy storage you can do it in minutes so whether the DevOps guy does or where the deadlock flight calls the storage guy the bottom line is they can get the storage up and running in a virtual environment a containerized environment in a matter of minutes and from a DevOps perspective that's what they want so we're able to meet the needs of the DevOps guy but also the traditional storage vendor as well don't get one last question for me for the henna we've run out of time they might have one more but I want to get your take on this because it's really been an interesting industry chess game with VCE and VMware and EMC doing the hyper converged x4 star calling it this hyper conversion without Cisco right this is because no longer you mentioned you in partnership with Cisco so VCC and bx rails was talked about last week what's going on with VCE is it still going to be around you see you're taking multiple forms is the increased breadth of solution is going to be multi-vendor what's your in it what you're taking on so you were at IBM cell you have relationship with cisco has that how does that what a customer's deal and what does the customer do because they're like okay who do I so I think there's a couple things that customers to look at first of all there's going to be a transformation VCE as it was originally constructed a partnership with cisco EMC and VMware will not exist after the acquisition this is my theory what will happen this distinctive sorry Cisco is go in there's no luck involved so all happen is those Cisco servers will be transitioned now and dell servers will be tradition did it's exactly what's going to happen so cisco is aware of this and cisco has been engaging with other partners like i mentioned the vs. tak had the best first year of any converged infrastructure in the history within its first year why well in the middle of last year what happened Dell an EMC an announced a merger so a lot of the business partners a lot of the end users there's cause for concern and EMC is already taken Cisco out of a number of configurations and there's a number of things for an end-user to think about one look at the development budgets what was the EMC development budget what's the dell development budget and substantially lower EMC did an outstanding job of acquiring startups with the debt load that's been written about publicly not just in the storage fresh but really in the financial press will be able to afford to buy a bunch of cool startups like EMC used to do the old days hard to say an EMC well I thought of stata domain was a great acquisition for uniting isilon same thing will they be able to continue to do that and like IBM EMC has a pretty good reputation for support and service that's not really reputation of the guys in Austin their reputation is cost-effective rapid delivery not necessarily the best important service the enterprise side people looking for that enterprise-class important service so those the questions that a customer needs to ask at the end user level where a channel partner use a civ as this merger goes for how's it going to impact the roadmap for the future the development expense my support capability those are things that have different models in those two companies so being should see how it pans out unfortunately we're out of time because we could do a whole cube second just on that area thanks for coming by give you the last word what does the digital transformation for the customer of IBM the buyer when they talked to you in the elevator and they say hey what's the storage angle on this digital treasure where the stores fit into my digital transformation what's the what's the bumper sticker what's the value proposition well the key thing digital transformation is a different sort of data it's been data for years and years and years data has to sit on storage the better the storage is your better the digital environment is the faster it is things like flash systems or our spectrum scale for cognitive the better that date is going to be so the digital era is powered by storage underneath it's like the foundation of a home good foundation great home good foundation great digital data great foundation the cube day one here more foundational coverage tomorrow the cube
