the cube here in our Palo Alto office for remote interviews during this time of covin 19 we're here with the quarantine crew here in our studio we got a great guest here from Google we'll Grannis managing director head of the office of the CTO with Google cloud thanks for coming on we'll appreciate you you spend some time with me Oh John's great to be with you and as you said in these times more important than ever to stay connected yeah and I'm really glad you came on because a couple things one congratulations to Google cloud for the success you guys had so a lot of big wins under your belt both on the momentum side on the business side but also on the technical side meat is available now for folks anthos is doing very very well partner ecosystem is developing got some nice used cases in vertical marker so I want to get in and unpack with you but really the bigger story here is that the world has seen the future before was ready for it and that is the at scale challenge that the Cova 19 has shown everyone we're seeing you know the future has been pulled forward we're living in a virtualized environment it's funny to say that virtualization has a server virtualization is a tech term but that enabled a lot of things we're living in a virtualized world now because we have to but this is gonna set in motion a series of new realities that you guys have been experiencing and supporting for many many years but now as a provider of Google cloud you guys have to operate at scale you have and now the whole world realizes that scale is a big deal and so you guys have had some successes I want to get your thoughts on the this at scale problem that the world now realizes I mean everyone's at home that's a disruption that was unfortunate whether it's under provisioning VPNs NIT to a surface area for security to just work and play and activities are now confined so people aren't convening anymore and it's a huge issue what's your take on all this well I mean to your point just now the fact that we can have this conversation we can have it blue idli from our respective remote locations just goes to show you the power of information technology that underlies so many of the things that we say and for Google Cloud this is not a new thing and for Google this is not a new thing for Google cloud we add a mission of trying to help companies accelerate their transformation and enable them in these new digital environments and so many companies that we've been working with they've already been on the path to operating an environments that are digital that are fluid and you think about the cloud that's one of the great benefits loud is that scalability income with the business demand and it also helps the scale situation without having to you know do the typical what you need to find the procurement people we need to find server vendors we need to get the storage lined up it really allows a much more fluid response to unexpected and unfortunate situations whether that's customer demand or you know in this case the global endemic yeah one of the things I want to get in with you I want to get you have explained your job is there because I see Google's got a new CEO now for over a year Tom's Korean came from Oracle knows the enterprise up and down you had Diane Greene before that again another enterprise leader Google Cloud has essentially rebuilt itself from the original Google cloud to be very enterprise centric you guys have great momentum and and this is a world where cloud native is going to be required I mean everyone now sees it the the tide has been pulled out there everything's exposed all the gaps in business from a tech standpoint it's kind of exposed and so the smart managers and companies are looking at things and saying double down on that let's kill that we don't want to pay that supplier they're not core to our business this is going to be a very rapid acceleration of what I call a vetting of the new the new set of players that are going to emerge because the folks who don't adapt to this new cloud native reality whether it's app workloads for banking to whatever they're gonna have to have to reinvent themselves now and reset and tweek to come out of this crisis so it's gonna be very cloud native this is a big deal can you share your your reaction to that absolutely and so as you pointed out there are kind of two worlds that exist right now companies that are moving to become more digital and transform and you mentioned the momentum I mean in Google cloud just over the last year greater than 50 percent revenue growth and you know and I greater than 10 billion dollar run rate business and adding customers that are really quick flip you know including you know just yesterday slung and you know along the way Telecom Italia Major League Baseball Vodafone Lowe's Wayfarer Activision Blizzard's so this is not you this transformation and this digitization is not just for you know a few or just for any one industry it's happening across the board and then you add that to the implementations that have been happening across you know Shopify and the Spotify and HSBC which was a early customer of ours in the cloud and it you know already has a little bit of a head start of this transformation so you see these new companies coming in and seeing the value of digital transformation and then these other companies that have kind of lit the path for others to consider and you know Shopify is a really good example of how seeing you know drastic uptick in demand they're able to responding you know roughly half a million shops up and running you know during a period of time where many retailers are trying to figure out how to stay online or you can get online well what is your role at Google I see you're the managing director title is managing director ahead of the office of the CTO we've seen these roles before you know head of this CTO you're off see technical role is it partnering with the CEO on strategy is it you kick tire kicking new things are you overseeing any strategic initiatives what is what is your role so a little bit of all those things combined into one so I I spent the first couple decades of my career on the other side of the in the non-tech you know community no in the enterprise where we were still building technology and we were still you know digitally minded but not the way that people view technology in Silicon Valley and so you know spending a couple decades in that environment really gave me insights into how to take technology and apply them to a specific problem and when I came to Google five years ago yeah selfishly it was because I knew the potential of Google's technology having been on the other side and I was really interested in forming a better bridge between Google's technology and people like me who were CTOs of public companies and really wanted the leverage that technology for problems that I was solving whether it was aerospace public sector manufacturing what-have-you and so it's been great it's the it's the role of a lifetime I've been able to build the team that I wanted as an enterprise technologist for decades and the entire span of technologies at our disposal and we do two things one is we help our most strategic customers accelerate their path loud and 2 we create these signals by working with the top companies moving to the cloud and digitally transforming we learned so much John about what we need to build as an organization so it also helps balance out the Google driven innovation with our customer driven innovation yeah and I could I can attest that we didn't watching you guys from the from day one hired a lot of great enterprise people that I personally know so you getting the enterprise chops and staff and getting you seeing some progress I have to ask you though because I first of all a big fan of Google at the scale from knowing them from when they were just a little search engine to what they are now the there was an expression a few years ago I heard from enterprise customers it was goes along the lines like this I want to be like Google because you guys had a great network you had large-scale you've had all these things that were like awesome and then they realized what we can't be like Google we don't have that sorry we don't have large-scale data centers so there was a little bit of a translation and I want to say a little bit of a overplay of the Google hand and you guys had since realized that you didn't it wasn't just people gonna bang your doorstep and be adopting Google cloud because there was a little bit of a cultural disconnect from wanting to be like Google then leveraging Google in their business as they transform so as you guys have moved from that what's changed they still want to be like Google in the sense you have great security got a great network you got that scale and it prizes a little bit slower to adopt that which you're focused on now what is that the story there because I think that's kind of the theme that I'm hearing okay Google now understands me they know I'm not as fast as Google they got super great people we are training our people we're treating you know retrain them this is the transformation that they're going through so you might be a little bit ahead of them certainly but now they need to level up how do you respond to that well a lot of this is the transformation that Thomas has been enacting you know over the last year plus and it comes in kind of three very operation or technical pillars that I think the first we expanded our customer and we continue to expand our customer facing themes you know three times what they were before because we need to be there we need to be in those situations we need to hear from the customer mean to learn more about the problems they're trying to solve so we don't just take a theoretical principle and try to overlay it onto a problem we actually get very visceral understanding of what trying to solve but you have to be there the game that empathy and that understanding and so one is showing up and that you know has been mobilizing a much larger engine the customer facing out personnel from Google second it's also been really important that we evolve our own you know just as Google brought sre principles and principles of distributed systems and software design out for the world we also had a little bit to learn about transitioning from typical customer support and moving to more customer experience so you've seen you know that evolution under on this as well with cloud changing you know moving from talking about support to talking about customer experience that white glove experience that our customers get our partners get from the beginning of their journey with us all the way through and then finally making sure that our product roadmap has the solutions that are relevant across be priority industries for us and you know that's again that only comes from being present from having a focus in those industry and then developing the solutions that progress those companies so again not this isn't about taking you know a principle and trying to apply it blindly this is about adding that connection that really deep connections to our customers and our partners and letting that connection manifest the things that we have to do as a product company the best support them over a long period some of these deals we've been announcing these are 10-year five-year multi-year strategic partnerships they go across the campus of you know all of you and you know those are the really exciting scaled partnerships but you know to your point you can't just take SR re from Google and apply it to company X but you can take things like error budgets or how we think about the principles of sree and you can apply them over the course of developing technology collaborating innovating together yeah and I think cloud native is gonna be a key thing and yeah I think what it's just my opinion but I think one of those situations where the better mousetrap will win if your cloud native and you have api's and you have the kind of services that people will will know beaded to your doorstep so I have to ask you with Thomas Korean on board obviously we've been following his career as well at Oracle he knows what he's doing comes in to Google it's being built out it's like a rocket ship at this point what bet is he making and what bet are you guys making on behalf of your customers what's the if you have to boil it down to Google clouds big bet what is the bet on the technology side and what's the bet on the business side sure well I've already mentioned you know I've already Internet's you know the big strategy that Thomas is brought in and you know that is the that's again those three pillars making sure that we show up and that we're present by having a scaled customer facing organization and making sure that we transitioned from you know a typical support mindset into more of customer experience mindset and then making sure that those solutions are tailored and available for our priority industries if I was to add you know more color to that I think one of the most important changes that Thomas has personally been driving as he's been converting us to a partner LED is and a partner led organization and this means a lot of investments in large mobile systems integrators like Accenture and Deloitte but this also means that like the Splunk announcement from yesterday that isn't just the cell >> this is a partnership it goes deep across go-to-market product and self do and then we also bring in very specific partners like Temenos in Europe for financial services or a SATA or a rack space for migrations and as a result the already we're seeing really incredible lifts so for example nearly 200 percent year-over-year increase in partner influenced revenue Google cloud and almost like a 13 X year-over-year increase in new customers one-bite partners that's the kind of engine that builds a real hyper scale does it's just saying you mentioned Splunk I want to get that in a second but I also notice there was a deal with Dallas group on ECM subscriptions which kind of leads me into the edge piece there's a real edge component here with Google cloud and I think I'd Akashi edge with Jennifer Lynn a few years ago really digging into the built-in security and the value of the Google Network I mean a lot of the scuttlebutt around the valley and the industry is you know Google's got an amazing network store a software-defined networking is gonna be a hot program programmable area so you got programmable networking and you got edge and edge security these are killer areas that need innovation could you comment on what you guys are doing there and do you agree I'm out see with you have a killer Network and you're leveraging it what's the can you just give some insight into what's going on those those two areas network and then the edge yeah I think what you're seeing is the manifestation of an of the progression of cloud generally what do I mean by that you know started out as like get everything to the data center you know we kind of had this thought that maybe we could take all the workloads and we could get them to these centralized hubs and they could redistribute out the results and you know drive the latency down over time so we span the portfolio of applications and services that would be relevant over time and what we've seen over the last decade really in cloud is an evolution >> more of a layered architecture and that layered architecture includes you know poor data centers that includes CDN capacity points of presence that includes edge and just in that list of customers over the last year I there were at least three or four telcos in there and you've also probably heard and seen quite a bit of telco momentum coming from asks in recent announcements I think that's an indication that a lot of us are thinking about how can we pick big technology like anthos for example and how could we orchestrate workloads create a common control play and you know manage services across those three shells if you will of the architecture and that's a that's a very strategic and important area for us and I think generally for the cloud industry easy it was expanding beyond the data center as the place where everything happens and you can look at you know Google Phi you look at stadia you can look at examples within Google they go well beyond cloud as to how we think about new ways to leverage that kind of creature all right so we saw some earnings come out on Amazon side as Google both groups and Microsoft well all three clouds are crushing it on the cloud side that's a tailwind I get that but as it continues we're expecting post kovat some you know redistribution of development dollars and projects whether it's IT going cloud native or whatever new workloads we are predicting a Cambrian explosion of new things from core to edge and this is gonna create some lift so I want to get your thoughts on you guys strategy with go-to market as well as your customers as they now have the ability to build workloads and apps with ai and data there seems to be a trend towards the vertical ization of whether its sales and go to market and/or specialism because you have horizontal scalability with cloud and you now have data that has distinct value in these verticals so it really seems to be a I won't say ratification but in a way that seems to be the norm whether you come into a market you have specialization but the date is there so apps can be more agile do you are you guys seeing that and is that something that you guys are considering from from an organization standpoint and how do customers think about targeting vertical industries and their customers yeah I I bring this to and where you started going there at the end of the question is exactly the way that we think about it as well which is we've moved from you know here are storage offers for everybody and here's you know basic infrastructure everybody and now we've said how can we make sure that we have solutions that are tailored with very specific problems that customers are trying to solve and we're getting to the point now where your performance and variety of technologies are available to be able to compose very specific solutions and if you think about the substrate that has to be there you know we mentioned you have to have some really great partners and you have to have you know roadmap that is focused on priority solution area so for example at Google cloud you know we're very focused on six priority vertical areas so retail financial services health care manufacturing and industrials health care life sciences public sector and you know as a result of being very focused in those areas we can make more target investments and also align our entire go-to-market system and our entire partner ecosystem ecosystem around those beers specific priority areas so for example we worked with SATA and HDA Healthcare Rob very recently to develop and maintain a national response portal Berko vat19 and that's to help better inform communities and hospitals we can use looker to help with like a Commonwealth Care Alliance on nonprofit and that helps monitor patient system symptoms and risk factors so you know we're using you know a very specific focus in healthcare and a partner ecosystem - you know ferry tailored solutions you know you can also look at I mentioned Shopify earlier that's another great example of how in retail they can use something like Google meat inherent reliability scalability security to connect their employees during these interesting times but then they can also use GCP at Google cloud platform to scale out and as they come up with new apps and experiences for their shoppers for their shops they can rapidly deploy to your point and those you know those solutions and you know how the database performs and how those tiers perform you that's a very tight-knit feedback loop with our engineering teams yeah one of the things I'm seeing obviously with the virtualization of the kovat is that you know when the world gets back to normal it'll be hybrid and it'll be a hybrid between reality not physical and 100% virtual hybrid and that's going to impact events to media to everything every vertical will be impacted and I want to point out the Splunk team bring that back in because I want you to comment on the relevance of the Splunk to you and in context to Splunk has a cloud they got a great slogan data for every everywhere everywhere dated to everywhere I think it is but the cube we have a cloud every company will have a cloud scale at some level will progress to having some sort of cloud because they have data how are you guys powering those clouds because I think the Splunk deal is interesting their partner their stock price was up out on the news of the deal a nice bump their first Blunk shout out to those guys but they're a data company now they're cross-platform but they're not Google but they have a cloud so you know saying so they need to play in all the clouds but they need infrastructure they need support so how do you guys talk to that customer and that says hey the next pandemic that comes the next crisis that's going to cause some either social disruption or workflow disruption or work supply chain disruption I need to be agile I need have full cloud scale and so I need to talk to Google what do you say to them what's the pitch and as does a Splunk deal Samir some of those capabilities or tie that together for us the spunk deal and how it relates to sure for example proof themselves for the future sorry for example with the cloud deal you take a look at what Google is already really good at data processing at scale log analytics you take a look at what Splunk is doing you know with their events and security incident monitoring and the rest it a really great mashup because they see by platforming on Google cloud not only they get highly performant infrastructure but they also get the opportunity to leverage data tools data analytics tools machine learning and AI that can help them provide enhance services so not just about acity going up and down your periods of band but also enhancing services and continuing to offer more value to their customers and we see that you know it's a really big trend and you know this gets it something you know John a little bit bigger which is the two views of the world and we talked about very tailored focused solutions Splunk is an example of making a very methodical approach to a partnership developing a solution specifically you know with partners and you know in this case Splunk on the security event management side but we're always going to provide our data processing platform our infrastructure for companies across many different industries and I think that addresses one part of the topic which is you know how do we make sure that in periods of demand rapidly changing this deals back to the foundational elements of like AI infrastructure as a service and elasticity and we're gonna provide a platform infrastructure that can help companies move through periods of you know it's hard to forecast and/or demand may rise and fall you know in very interesting ways but then there's going to be funds where you know we we because they're not a necessarily a focused use case where it may just be generalized platform versus a focused solution so for example like in the oil and gas industry we don't develop custom AI ml solutions the facility upstream extraction for example but what we do do is work with renewable energy companies to figure out how they might be able to leverage some of our AI machine learning algorithms from our own data centers to make their operations more efficient and to help those renewable energy companies learn from what we've learned building out the but I consider to be a world leading renewable energy strategy and so classic and able mint model where you're enabling your platform for your customers okay so I got to ask the question I asked this to the Microsoft guys as well because Amazon you know has their own sass stuff but but really more of an tend the better products usually on the ecosystem side you guys have some killer sass cheap tree-sweet where customer if we use the g sqweep really deeply we also use some BigTable as well I want to build a cloud we have a cloud cube cloud but you guys have meat so I want to build my product on Google cloud how do I know you're not going to compete with me do you guys have those conversations around the trade-off between you know the pure Google services which provide great value for the areas where the ecosystem needs to develop those new areas that are gonna be great markets potentially huge markets that are out there well this is the power of partnership I mentioned earlier that one of the really big moves that Thomas is made has been developing a sense of partners and it kind of blurs the line between traditional what you would call a customer what you would call a partner and so having a really strong sense of which industries were in which we prioritize Plus having a really strong sense of where we want to add value and where you know our customers and partners want to add that value that's that's the foundational that's the beginning of that conversation that you just mentioned it's important that we have an ability to engage not just in a you know here's the cloud infrastructure piece of the puzzle but one of the things Thomas has also done in the East rata jia is has been to make sure that you know the Google cloud relationship is also a way to access all amazing innovation happening across all of Google and also help bring a strategic conversation in that includes multiple properties from across Google so that an HSBC and Google and have a conversation about how to move forward together that is comprehensive rather than you know having to wonder and have that uncertainty sit behind the projects that we're trying to get out and have high velocity on because they offer so much to retail bank for example well I got a couple more questions and then I'll let you go I know you got some other things going I really appreciate you digging the time sharing this great insight and updates as a builder you've been on the other side of the table now you're at Google heading up the CTO I was working with Thomas understanding them go to market across the board and the product mix as you talk to customers and they're thinking the good customers are thinking hey you know I want to come out of this Cove in on an upward trajectory and I want to use this opportunity to reset and realign for the future what advice do you have for those enterprises there could be small medium sized enterprises to the full large big guys and obviously cloud native we talked some of that already but what advice would you have for them as they start to really prioritize as some things are now exposed the collaboration the tooling the scale all these things are out there what have you seen and what advice would you give a CX o or C so or leader in the industry to think about and how they should come out of this thing how they should plan execute and move forward well I appreciate the question because this is the crux of most of my day job which is interacting with the c-suite and boards of you know companies and partners around the world and they're obviously very interested to learn or you know get a data point from someone at Google and the the advice generally goes in a couple of different directions out one collaboration is part of the secret sauce that makes Google what it is and I think you're seeing this right now across every industry and it you know whether you're a small medium-sized business or you're a large company if the ability to connect people with each other to collaborate in very meaningful ways to share information rapidly to do it securely with high reliability that that's the foundation that enables all of the projects that you might choose to you know applications to build services to enable actually succeed in production and over the long haul is that culture of innovation and collaboration so absolutely number one is you're having a really strong sense of what they want to achieve from a cultural perspective a collaboration perspective and the and the people because that's the thing that fuels everything else second piece of the you know advice especially in these times where there's so much uncertainty is where can you buy down uncertainty with vets that aren't you know that art you can you can learn without a high penalty and this is a this is why cloud I think is really really you know finding you know super scale it was our it was already on the rise but what you're seeing now and you know as you've linked back to me during this conversation we're seeing the same thing which is a high increase in demand of let's get this implemented now how can we do this more this is you know clearly one way to move through uncertainty and so look for those opportunities I'll give you a really good example mainframes one of the classic workloads of the you know on-premise enterprise and you know there's all sorts of there are all sorts of potential magic solves for getting mainframes to the cloud and getting out of mainframes but a practical consideration might be maybe you just front-end it with some Java or maybe you just get closer to other data centers within a certain amount of milliseconds that's required to have performant workload maybe you start chunking at a part and treat the workload a little bit differently rather than you know just one thing but there are a lot of years and investments in a workload that might run on a mainframe and that's a perfect example of out you know biting off too much it might be a little bit dangerous but there is a path to and so for example like we brought in a company called cornerstone to help with those migrations but we also have you know partnerships with you know data center providers and others globally from us our own built infrastructure to allow even you know a smaller stuff per site or more like post proximity location in the workload it's great you know everything had as a technical metaphor connection these days when you have a Internet digitally connected world we're living in you know the notion of a digital business was a research buzzword that's been kicked around for years but I think now kovat 19 you're seeing the virtual or digital it's really digital but you know virtual reality augmented reality is going to come fast to really get people to go WOW virtual virtualization of my business so you know we've been kind of kicking around this term business virtualization just almost as a joke but it's really more about okay this is about a new world a new opportunity to think about when we come out of this we're gonna still go back to our physical world now the hybrid now kicks in this kind of connects all aspects of business in every verticals not leahey I'm targeting like the this industry so there might be unique solutions in those industries but now the world is virtualized it's connected it's a digital environment these are huge concepts that I think has kind of been a fringe lunatic fringe idea but now it's brought mainstream this is gonna be a huge tailwind for you guys as well as developers and entrepreneurs and app application software this is gonna be we think a big thing what's your reaction to that which your based on your experience what do you see happening do you agree with it and you have any thing you might want to add maybe you know one kind of philosophical statement and then one more you know I bruised my shins a lot in this world and maybe share some of the black and blue coloration first from a philosophical standpoint the greater the crisis the more open-minded people become and the more creative people get and so I'm really excited about the creativity that I'm seeing you know with all of the customers that I work with directly plus our partners you know Googlers everybody's rallying together to think about this world differently and so to your point you know a shift in mindset you know there are there are very few moments where you get this pronounced a change and everyone is going through it all at the same time so that creates a you know an opportunity a scenario where the old thinking new strategies creativity you know bringing people in in new ways collaborating a new way and offer a lot of benefits more you know practically speaking and from my experience you know building technology for a couple decades you this is a it has an interesting parallel to you know building like tightly coupled really large maybe monoliths versus micro services and debate around you know do we build small things that can be reconfigured and you know built out by others or built on by others more easily or do we credit Golden Path and a more understood you know development environment and I'm not here to answer the question of which one's better is that's what's still a raging debate and I can tell you that the process of going through and taking a service or an application or a thing that we want to deliver the customer that one of our customers wants to deliver to their cost and thinking about it so comprehensively that you're able to think about it in its what its power its core functions and then thinking methodically about how to enable those core functions that is a you know that's a real opportunity and I think technology to your point is getting to the place where you know if you want to run across multiple clouds yeah this is the anthos conversation where you know recently g8 you know a global scale platform you know multi cloud platform that's a pretty big moment in technology and that opens up the aperture to think differently about architectures and that process of taking you know an application service and making it real well I think you're right on the money I think philosophically it's a flashpoints opportunity I think that's going to prove to be accelerating gonna see people win faster and lose faster you can see that quickly happen but to your point about the monolith versus you know service or decoupled based systems I think we allow a live in a world where it's a systems of you now you can have a monolith combined with decoupled systems that's distributed computing I think this is that the trend it's a system it's not one thing or the other so I think the debate will continue just like you know VI versus Emacs we know you don't know right so you know if people gonna have this debate but it's just if you think about as a system the use case defines the architecture that's the beautiful thing about the cloud so great insight I really appreciate it and how's everything going over there Google Cloud you got meat that's available how's your staff what's it like inside the Googleplex and the Google cloud team tell us what's going on over there people still working working remote how's everyone doing well as you can as you can tell from my scenario here my my backdrop yes still hard at work and we take this as a huge responsibility you know these moments is a huge responsibility because there are you know educators loved ones medical professionals you know critical life services that run on services that Google provides and so I can tell you were humbled by the opportunity to provide you know the backbone and the platform and the people and the curiosity and the sincere desire to help and I mentioned a couple of ways already just in this conversation where we've been able to leverage some of our investment in technology to help or people that really gets at the root of who we are so while we just like any other humans are going through a process of understanding our new reality what really fires us up and what really a chart is because is that this is a moment where what we do really well is very very important for the world in every geo in every vertical in every use case and every solution type so we're just take we're taking that responsibility very seriously and at the same time we're trying to make sure that you know all of our teams as well as all the teams that we work with our customers and partners are making it a human moment not just the technology moment well congratulations and thanks for spending the time great insight will appreciate will Grannis Managing Director head of Technology office of the CTO at Google cloud this certainly brings to the mainstream what we've been in the industry been into for a long time which is DevOps large-scale role of data and technology now we think it's going to be even more acute around societal benefits and thank God we have all those services for the frontline workers so thank you so much for all that way effort and thanks for spending the time Palo Alto studios you know kind of continuing our leadership coverage reaching out to the community for people that we've got in our community to get their take on you know how they're dealing with the Kovach crisis how they're helping to contribute back to the community to to bring their resources to bear and you know just some general good tips and tricks of getting through these kind of challenging times and we're really excited to have one of my favorite guests he's being used to come on all the time we haven't had them on for three years which I can't believe it sabi Mehta the CEO of true SATA founder to say to obby I checked the record I can't believe it's been three years since we last that down great to see you Jeff there's well first of all it's always a pleasure and I think the only person to blame for that is you Jeff well I will make sure that it doesn't happen again so in just a check-in how's things going with the family the company thank you for asking you know family is great we have I've got two young kids who have become video conferencing experts and they don't teach me the tricks for it which I'm sure is happening a lot of families around the world and the team is great we vent remote at this point almost almost two months ago down and can't complain I think their intellectual property business like you are so it's been a little easier for us to go remote compared to a lot of other businesses in the world and in America but no complaints it'll be very fortunate we are glad that we have a business and a company that can withstand the the economic uncertainty and the family's great I hope the same for the queue family I haven't seen Dave and John and it's good to see you again and I hope all of you guys are helped happy and healthy great I think in we're good so thank you for asking so let's jump into it you know one of the things that I've always loved about you is you know really your sense of culture and this kind of constant reinforcing of culture in your social media posts and the company blog post at true SATA you know celebrating your interns and and you really have a good pulse for that and you know I just I think we may even talked about it before about you know kind of the CEOs and leadership and and social media those that do and that and those that don't and you know I think it's it's probably from any kind of a risk reward trade-off you know I could say something group it versus what am I getting at it but really it's super important and in these times with the distributed workforce that the the importance and value of communicating and culture and touching your people frequently across a lot of different mediums and topic areas is is more important than ever before share with us kind of your strategy why did you figure this out early how have you you know kind of adjusted you know your method of keeping your team up and communicating absolutely like I guess I owe you guys a little bit of gratitude for it which is we launched our company and you know I'm showing a member on the cube it was a social media launch you know if you say that say it like that I think there are two or three things that are very important Jeff and you hit on all of them one is the emphasis on information sharing it becomes more important than times like these and we as as a society value the ability to share a positive conversation of positive perspective and a positive outlook more but since day zero at the seder we've had this philosophy that there are no secrets it is important to be open and transparent both inside and outside the company and that our legacy is going to be defined by what we do for the community and not just what we do for our shareholders and by its very nature the fact that you know I grew up in a different continent now live and call America now a different continent my home I guess I was it's very important for me to stay connected to my roots it is a good memory or reminder that the world is very interconnected unfortunately the pandemic is the is the best or worst example of it in a really weird way but I think it's also a very important point Jeff that I believe we learned early and I hope coming out from this is something that we don't lose the point you made about kindness social media and social networking has a massively in my opinion massively positive binding force for the world at the same time there were certain business models it tried to capitalize on the negative aspects of it you know whether they are the the commercialized versions of slam books or not so nice business models that capitalize on the ability for people to complain I hope that people society and us humans coming out of it learn from people like yourself or you know the small voice that I have on social media or the messages we share and we are kinda in what we do online because the ability to have networks that are viral and can propagate or self propagate is a very positive unifying force and I hope out of this pandemic we all realize the positive nature's of it more than the negative nature's of it because unfortunately as you know that our business models built on the negative forces of social media and I really really hope they're coming out of this are positive voices drown out the negative voices that's great point and and it's a great I want to highlight a quote from one of your blog's again I think you're just a phenomenal communicator and in relationship to what's going on with kovat and and I quote we are fighting fear pain and anxiety as much as we are fighting the virus this is our humble attempt to we'll get into what you guys did to help the thousands of first responders clerks rockstars but I just really want to stick with that kindness theme you know I used to or I still joke right that the greatest smile in technology today is our G from signal FX the guys are gonna throw up a picture of him he's a great guy he looks like everybody's favorite I love that guy but therefore signal effects and actually it's funny signal FX also launched on the cube at big data a big data show I used to say the greatest smile intact is avi Mehta I mean how can I go wrong and and what I when I reached out to you I I do I consciously thought what what more important time do we have than to see people like you with a big smile with the great positive attitude focusing on on the positives and and I just think it's so important and it segues nicely into what we used to talk about it the strata shows and the big data shows all the time everyone wanted to talk about Hadoop and big data you always stress is never about the technology it's about the application of the technology and you focus your company on that very where that laser focus from day one now it's so great to see is we think you know the bad news about kovat a lot of bad news but one of the good news is is you know there's never been as much technology compute horsepower big data analytics smart people like yourself to bring a whole different set of tools to the battle than just building Liberty ships or building playing planes or tanks so you guys have a very aggressive thing that you're doing tell us a little bit about is the kovat active transmission the coat if you will tell us about what that is how did it come to be and what are you hoping to accomplish of course so first of all you're too kind you know thank you so much I think you also were the first people to give me a hard time about my new or Twitter picture I put on and he said what are you doing RV you know you have a good smile come on give me the smile die so thank you you're very kind Jeff I think as I as we as you know and I know I think you've a lot to be thankful for in life and there's no reason why we should not smile no matter what the circumstance we have so much to be thankful for and also I am remiss happy Earth Day you know I'm rocking my green for Earth Day as well as Ramadan Kareem today is the first day of Ramadan and you know I I wish everybody in the world Ramadan Kareem and on that friend right on that trend of how does do we as a community come together when faced with crisis so Court was a very simple thing you know it's I'm thank you for recognizing the hard work of the team that led it it was an idea I came up with it you know in the shower I'm like there are two kinds of people or to your you can we have we as humans have a choice when history is being made which I do believe I do believe history is being made right whether you look at it economically and a economic shock and that we have not felt as humanity since the depression so you look at it socially and again something we haven't seen sin the Spanish blue history is being made in in these times and I think we as humans have a choice we can either be witnesses to it or play our part in helping shape it and coat was our humble tiny attempt to when we look back when history was being made we chose to not just sit on the sidelines but be a part of trying to be part of the solution so all riddled with code was take a small idea I had team gets the entire credit read they ran with it and the idea was there was a lot of data being open sourced around co-ed a lot of work being done around reporting what is happening but nothing was being done around reporting or thinking through using the data to predict what could happen with it and that was code with code we try to make the first code wonder oh that came out almost two weeks ago now when you first contacted us was predicting the spread and the idea around breaking the spread wasn't just saying here is the number of cases a number of deaths and know what to be very off we wanted to provide like you know how firefighters do can we predict where it may go to next at a county by county level so we could create a little bit of a firewall to help it from stop you know have the spread of it to be slower in no ways are we claiming that if you did port you can stop it but if he could create firewalls around it and distribute tests not just in areas and cities and counties where it is you know spiking but look at the areas and counties where it's about to go to so we use a inner inner in-house Network algorithm we call that Orion and we were able to start predicting where the virus is gonna go to we also then quickly realize that this could be an interesting where an extra you know arrow and the quiver in our fight we should also think about where are there green shoots around where can recovery be be helped so before you know the the president email announced this it was surrender serendipitous before the the president came and said I want to start finding the green shoes to open the country we then did quote $2 which we announced a week ago with the green shoots around a true sailor recovery index and the recovery index is looking at its car like a meta algorithm we're looking at the rates of change of the rates of change so if you're seeing the change of the rates of change you know the meta part we're declining we're saying there are early shoots that we if as we plan to reopen our economy in our country these are the counties to look at first that was the second attempt of code and the third attempt we have done is we calling it the odd are we there yet index it got announced yesterday and now - you're the first public announcement of it and the are we there yet index is using the government's definition of the phase 1 phase 2 phase 3 and we are making a prediction on where which are the counties that are ready to be open up and there's good news everywhere in the country but we we are predicting there are 73 different counties that ask for the government's definition of ready to open are ready to open that's all you know we were able to launch the app in five days it is free for all first responders all hospital chains all not-for-profit organizations trying to help the country through this pandemic and poor profit operations who want to use the data to get tests out to get antibodies out and to get you know the clinical trials out so we have made a commitment that we will not charge for code through - for any of those organizations to have the country open are very very small attempt to add another dimension to the fight you know it's data its analytics I'm not a first responder this makes me sleep well at night that I'm at least we're trying to help you know right well just for the true heroes right the true heroes this is our our humble attempt to help them and recognize that their effort should not go to its hobby that that's great because you know there is data and there is analytics and there is you know algorithms and the things that we've developed to help people you know pick they're better next purchase at Amazon or where they gonna watch next on Netflix and it's such a great application no it's funny I just finished a book called ghost Bob and is a story of the cholera epidemic in London in like 1850 something or other about four but what's really interesting at that point in time is they didn't know about waterborne diseases they thought everything kind of went through the air and and it was really a couple of individuals in using data in a new and more importantly mapping different types of datasets on top of it and now this is it's as this map that were they basically figured out where the the pump was that was polluting everybody but it was a great story and you know kind of changing the narrative by using data in a new novel and creative way to get to an answer that they couldn't and you know they're there's so much data out there but then they're so short a date I'm just curious from a data science point of view you know um you know there there aren't enough tests for you know antibodies who's got it there aren't enough tests for just are you sick and then you know we're slowly getting the data on the desk which is changing all the time you know recently announced that the first Bay Area deaths were actually a month were they before they thought they were so as you look at what you're trying to accomplish what are some of the great datasets out there and how are you working around some of the the lack of data in things like you know test results are you kind of organizing pulling that together what would you like to see more of that's why I like talking to you so I missed you you are these good questions of me excellent point I think there are three things I would like to highlight number one it doesn't take your point that you made with the with the plethora of technical advances and this S curve shift that these first spoke at the cube almost eleven years ago to the date now or ten years ago just the idea of you know population level or modeling that cluster computing is finally democratized so everybody can run complicated tests and a unique segment or one and this is the beauty of what we should be doing in the pandemic I'm coming I'm coming I'm quite surprised actually and given the fact we've had this S curve shift where the world calls a combination of cloud computing so on-demand IO and technical resources for processing data and then the on-demand ability to store and run algorithms at massive scale we haven't really combined our forces to predict more you know that the point you made about the the the waterborne pandemic in the eighteen eighteen hundreds we have an ability as humanity right now to actually see history play out rather than write a book about it you know it has a past tense and it's important to do are as follows number one luckily for you and I the cost of computing an algorithm to predict is manageable so I am surprised why the large cloud players haven't come out and said you know what anybody who wants to distribute anything around predictions lay to the pandemic should get cloud resources for free I we are running quote on all three cloud platforms and I'm paying for all of it right that doesn't really make sense but I'm surprised that they haven't really you know joined the debate or contribute to it and said in a way to say let's make compute free for anybody who would like to add a new dimension to our fight against the pandemic number one but the good news is it's available number two there is luckily for us an open data movement you know that was started on the Obama administration and hasn't stopped because you can't stop open movements allows people companies like ours to go leverage know whether it's John Hancock Carnegie Mellon or the new data coming out of you know California universities a lot of those people are opening up the data not every single piece is at the level we would like to see you know it's not zip plus 4 is mostly county level it's available the third innovation is what we have done with code but not it's not an innovation for the world right which is the give get model so we have said we will curate everything is available lie and boo cost anybody is used but they're for purposes and computations you want to enrich it every organization who gives code data will get more out of it so we have enabled a data exchange keep our far-off purple form and the open up the rail exchange that my clients use but you know we've opened up our data exchange part of our software platform and we have open source for this particular case a give get model but the more you give to it the more you get out of there and our first installations this was the first week that we have users of the platform you know the state of Nevada is using it there are no our state in North Carolina is using it already and we're trying to see the first asks for the gift get model to be used but that's the three ways you're trying to address the that's great and and and and so important you know in this again when this whole thing started I couldn't help but think of the Ford plant making airplanes and and Keiser making Liberty ships in in World War two but you know now this is a different battle but we have different tools and to your point luckily we have a lot of the things in place right and we have mobile phones and you know we can do zoom and well you know we can we can talk as we're talking now so I want to shift gears a little bit and just talk about digital transformation right we've been talking about this for ad nauseam and then and then suddenly right there's this light switch moment for people got to go home and work and people got to communicate via via online tools and you know kind of this talk and this slow movement of getting people to work from home kind of a little bit and digital transformation a little bit and data-driven decision making a little bit but now it's a light switch moment and you guys are involved in some really critical industries like healthcare like financial services when you kind of look at this not from a you know kind of business opportunity peer but really more of an opportunity for people to get over the hump and stop you can't push back anymore you have to jump in what are you kind of seeing in the marketplace Howard you know some of your customers dealing with this good bad and ugly there are two towers to start my response to you with using two of my favorite sayings that you know come to mind as we started the pandemic one is you know someone very smart said and I don't know who's been attributed to but a crisis is a terrible thing to waste so I do believe this move to restoring the world back to a natural state where there's not much fossil fuels being burnt and humans are not careful about their footprint but even if it's forced is letting us enjoy the earth in its glory which is interesting and I hope you don't waste an opportunity number one number two Warren Buffett came out and said that it's only when the tide goes out you realize who's swimming naked and this is a culmination of both those phenomenal phrases you know which is one this is the moment I do believe this is something that is deep both in the ability for us to realize the virtuosity of humanity as a society as social species as well as a reality check on what a business model looks like visa vie a presentation that you can put some fancy words on even what has been an 11-year boom cycle and blitzscale your way to disaster you know I have said publicly that this the peak of the cycle was when mr. Hoffman mr. Reid Hoffman wrote the book bit scaling so we should give him a lot of credit for calling the peak in the cycle so what we are seeing is a kind of coming together of those two of those two big trends crises is going to force industry as you've heard me say many for many years now do not just modernize what we have seen happen chef in the last few years or decades is modernization not transformation and they are different is the big difference as you know transformation is taking a business model pulling it apart understanding the economics that drive it and then not even reassembling it recreating how you can either recapture that value or recreate that value completely differently or by the way blow up the value create even more value that hasn't happened yet digital transformation you know data and analytics AI cloud have been modernizing trends for the last ten years not transformative trends in fact I've also gone and said publicly that today the very definition of technology transformation is run a sequel engine in the cloud and you get a big check off as a technology organization saying I'm good I've transformed how I look at data analytics I'm doing what I was doing on Prem in the cloud there's still sequel in the cloud you know there's a big a very successful company it has made a businessman out of it you don't need to talk about the company today but I think this becomes that moment where those business models truly truly get a chance to transform number one number two I think there's going to be less on the industry side on the new company side I think the the error of anointing winners by saying grow at all cost economics don't matter is fundamentally over I believe that the peak of that was the book let's called blitzscaling you know the markets always follow the peaks you know little later but you and I in our lifetimes will see the return to fundamentals fundamentals as you know never go out of fashion Jeff whether it's good conversations whether it's human values or its economic models if you do not have a par to being a profitable contributing member of society whether that is running a good balance sheet individually and not driven by debt or running a good balance sheet as a company you know we call it financial jurisprudence financial jurisprudence never goes out of fashion and the fact that even men we became the mythical animal which is not the point that we became a unicorn we were a profitable company three years ago and two years ago and four years ago and today and will end this year as a profitable company I think it's a very very nice moment for the world to realize that within the realm of digital transformation even the new companies that can leverage and push that trend forward can build profitable business models from it and if you don't it doesn't matter if you have a billion users as my economic professor told me selling a watermelon that you buy for a dollar or fifty cents even if you sell that a billion times you cannot make it up in volume I think those are two things that will fundamentally change the trend from modernization the transformation it is coming and this will be the moment when we look back and when you write a book about it that people say you know what now Jeff called it and now and the cry and the pandemic is what drove the economic jurisprudence as much as the social jurisprudence obvious on so many things here we can we're gonna be we're gonna go Joe Rogan we're gonna be here for four hours so hopefully hopefully you're in a comfortable chair but uh-huh but I don't I don't sit anymore I love standing on a DD the stand-up desk but I do the start of my version of your watermelon story was you know I dad a couple of you know kind of high-growth spend a lot of money raised a lot of money startups back in the day and I just know finally we were working so hard I'm Michael why don't we just go up to the street and sell dollars for 90 cents with a card table and a comfy chair maybe some iced tea and we'll drive revenue like there's nobody's business and lose less money than we're losing now not have to work so hard I mean it's so interesting I think you said everyone's kind of Punt you know kind of this pump the brakes moment as well growth at the ethic at the cost of everything else right there used to be a great concept called triple-line accounting right which is not just shareholder value to this to the sacrifice of everything else but also your customers and your employees and-and-and your community and being a good steward and a good participant in what's going on and I think that a lot of that got lost another you know to your point about pumping the brakes and the in the environment I mean we've been kind of entertaining on the oil side watching an unprecedented supply shock followed literally within days by an unprecedented demand shock but but the fact now that when everyone's not driving to work at 9:00 in the morning we actually have a lot more infrastructure than we thought and and you know kind of goes back to the old mob capacity planning issue but why are all these technology workers driving to work every morning at nine o'clock it means one thing if you're a service provider or you got to go work at a restaurant or you're you're carrying a truck full of tools but for people that just go sit on a laptop all day makes absolutely no sense and and I'd love your point that people are now you know seeing things a little bit slowed down you know that you can hear birds chirp you're not just stuck in traffic and into your point on the digital transformation right I mean there's been revolution and evolution and revolution people get killed and you know the fact that digital is not the same as physical but it's different had Ben Nelson on talking about the changes in education he had a great quote I've been using it for weeks now right that a car is not a is not a mechanical horse right it's really an opportunity to rethink the you know rethink the objective and design a new solution so it is a really historical moment I think it is it's real interesting that we're all going through it together as well right it's not like there quake in 89 or I was in Mount st. Helens and that blew up in in 1980 where you had kind of a population that was involved in the event now it's a global thing where were you in March 20 20 and we've all gone through this indeed together so hopefully it is a little bit of a more of a unifying factor in kind of the final thought since we're referencing great books and authors and quotes right as you've all know Harare and sapiens talked about what is culture right cultures is basically it's it's a narrative that we all have bought into it I find it so ironic that in the year 2020 that we always joke is 20/20 hindsight we quickly found out that everything we thought was suddenly wasn't and the fact that the global narrative changed literally within days you know really a lot of spearhead is right here in Santa Clara County with with dr. Sarah Cody shutting down groups of more than 150 people which is about four days before they went to the full shutdown it is a really interesting time but as you said you know if you're fortunate enough as we are to you know have a few bucks in the bank and have a business that can be digital which you can if you're in the sports business or the travel business the hotel business and restaurant business a lot of a lot of a lot of not not good stuff happening there but for those of us that can it is an opportunity to do this nice you know kind of a reset and use the powers that we've developed for recommendation engines for really a much more power but good for good and you're doing a lot more stuff too right with banking and in in healthcare telemedicine is one of my favorite things right we've been talking about telemedicine and electronic medicine for now well guess what now you have to cuz the hospitals are over are overflowing Jeff to your point three stories and you know then at some point I know you have you I will let you go you can let me go I can talk to you for four hours I can talk to you for but days my friend you know the three stories that there have been very relevant to me through this crisis I know one is first I think I guess in a way all are personal but the first one you know that I always like to remind people on there were business models built around allowing people to complain online and then using that as almost like a a stick to find a way to commercialize it and I look at that all of our friends I'm sure you have friends have lots of friend the restaurant is big and how much they are struggling right they are honest working the hardest thing to do in life as I've been told and I've witnessed through my friends is to run a restaurant the hours the effort you put into it making sure that what you produce this is not just edible but it's good quality is enjoyed by people is sanitary is the hard thing to do and there was yet there were all of these people you know who would not find in their heart and their minds for two seconds to go post a review if something wasn't right and be brutal in those reviews and if they were the same people were to look back now and think about how they assort the same souls then anything to be supportive for our restaurant workers you know it's easy to go and slam them online but this is our chance to let a part of the industry that we all depend on food right critical to humanity's success what have we done to support them as easy as it was for us to complain about them what have we done to support them and I truly hope and I believe they're coming out of it those business models don't work anymore and before we are ready to go on and online on our phones and complain about well it took time for the bread to come to my table we think twice how hard are they working right number one that's my first story I really hope you do tell me about that my second story is to your have you chained to baby with Mark my kids I'm sure as your kids get up every morning get dressed and launch you know their online version of a classroom do you think when they enter the workforce or when they go to college you and me are going to try and convince them to get in a oil burning combustion engine but by the way can't have current crash and breakdown and impact your health impact the environment and show up to work and they'll say what do you talk about are you talking about I can be effective I can learn virtually why can't I contribute virtually so I think there'll be a generation of the next class of you know contribute to society who are now raised to live in an environment where the choice of making sure we preserve the planet and yet contribute towards the growth of it is no longer a binary choice both can be done so I completely agree with you we have fundamentally changed how our kids when they grew up will go to work and contribute right my third story is the thing you said about how many industries are suffering we have clients you know in the we have health care customers we have banking customers you know we have whoever paying the bills like we are are doing everything they can to do right by society and then we have customers in the industry of travel hospitality and one of my most humbling moments Jeff there's one of the no sea level executives sent us an email early in this in this crisis and said this is a moment where a strong David can help AV Goliath and just reading that email had me very emotional because they're not very many moments that we get as corporations as businesses where we can be there for our customers when they ask us to be their father and if we as companies and help our customers our clients who area today are flying people are feeding people are taking care of their health and they're well if V in this moment and be there for them we we don't forget those moments you know those as humans have long-term memories right that was one of the kindest gentlest reminders to me that what was more important to me my co-founder Richard you know my leadership team every single person at Reseda that have tried very hard to build automations because as an automation company to automate complex human process so we can make humans do higher order activities in the moment when our customers asked us to contribute and be there for them I said yes they said yes you said yes and I hope I hope people don't forget that that unicorns aren't important there are mythical animals there's nothing all about profits there's nothing mythical about fortress balance sheet and there's nothing mythical about a strong business model that is built for sustainable growth not good at all cost and those are my three stories that you know bring me a lot of lot of calm in this tremendous moment of strife and and in the piece that wraps up all those is ultimately it's about relationships right people don't do business I mean companies don't do business with companies people do business with people and it's those relationships and and in strong relationships through the bad times which really set us up for when things start to come back I me as always it's I'm not gonna let it be three years to the next time I hear me pounding on your door great to catch up you know love to love to watch really your your culture building and your community engagement good luck I mean great success on the company but really that's one thing I think you really do a phenomenal job of just keeping this positive drumbeat you always have you always will and really appreciate you taking some time on a Friday to sit down with us well first of all thank you I wish I could tell you I just up to you but we I'm your host Dave Vellante with my cohost David foyer and this is the cube, the leader in live tech coverage. This is our live coverage of micron insight 2019 we were here last year talking about some of the big picture trends. Derek ticker is here, he's the general manager and vice president of the storage business unit at micro and great to see you again. Thank you so much for having me here. Welcome. So you know we talk about the super powers a lot, you know, cloud data, AI and these new workloads that are coming in. And this, this, I was talking to David earlier in our kickoff like how real is AI? And it feels like it's real. It's not just a bunch of vendor industry hype and it comes in a lot of different forms. Derek, what are you seeing in terms of the new workloads and the big trends in artificial intelligence? >>I think just on the, on the front end, you guys are absolutely right. The, the role of artificial intelligence in the world is, uh, is absolutely transformational. I was sitting in a meeting in the last couple of days and somebody was walking through a storyline that I have to share with you. That's a perfect example of why this is becoming mainstream. In Southern California at a children's hospital, there were a set of parents that had a few days old baby and this baby was going through seizures and no one could figure out what it was. And during the periods of time of the seizure, the child's brain activity was zero. There was no brain activity whatsoever. And what they did is they performed a CT scan, found nothing, check for infections, found nothing. And can you imagine a parent just sitting there dealing with their child and that situation, you feel hopeless. >>This particular institution is so much on the bleeding edge. They've been investing in personalized medicine and essentially what they were able to do was extract a sample of blood from that sample of blood within a matter of minutes. They were able to run an algorithm that could sift through 5 million genetic variants to go find a potential match for a genetic variant that existed within this child. They found one that was 0.01% of the population found a tiny, tiny, call it a less than a needle in the haystack. And what they were able to do is translate that actual insight into a treatment. And that treatment wasn't invasive. It didn't involve surgery. It involves supplements and providing this shower, just the nutrients that he needed to combat this genetic variant. But all of this was enabled through technology and through artificial intelligence in general. And a big part of the show that we're here at today is to talk about the industry coming together and discussing what are the great advances that are happening in that domain. >>It's just, it's super exciting to see something that touches that close to our life. I love that story and that's, that's why I love this event. I mean, well, obviously micron memories, you know, DRAM, NAND, et cetera, et cetera. But this event is all about connecting to the impacts on our lives. You take, you take that, I used to ask this question a lot of when will machines be able to make better diagnoses than, than doctors. And I think, you know, a lot people say, well they already can, but the real answer is it's really about the augmentation. Yeah. You know, machines helping doctors get to that, you know, very, you know, uh, a small probability 0.1001% yes. And it'd be able to act on it. That's really how AI is affecting our lives every day. >> Wholeheartedly agree. And actually that's a, that's a big part of our mission. >>Our mission is to transform how the world uses information to enrich life. That's the heart and soul of what you just described. Yeah. And we're actually, we're super excited about what we see happening in storage as a result of this. Um, one of the, one of the things that we've noticed as we've gotten engaged with a broad host of customers in the industry is that there's a lot of focus on artificial intelligence workloads being handled based on memory and memory bandwidth and larger amounts of memory being required. If you look at systems of today versus systems of tomorrow, based on the types of workloads that are evolving from machine learning, the need for DRAM is growing dramatically. Multiple factors, we see that, but what nobody ever talks about or rarely talks about is what's going on in the storage subsystem and one of the biggest issues that we've found over time or challenges that exist is as you look at the AI workloads going back to 2014 the storage bandwidth required was a few megabytes per second and called tens of, but if you just look every year, over time we're exceeding at gigabyte, two gigabytes of bandwidth required out of the storage subsystem. >>Forget the memory. The storage is being used as a cash in it flushes, but once you get into a case where you actually want to do more work on a given asset, which of course everybody wants to do from a TCO perspective, you need super high performance and capability. One of the things that that we uncovered was by delivering an SSD. This is our 9,300 drive. We actually balanced both the read IOPS and the ride IOPS at three gigs per second. And what we allow to have happened is not just what you can imagine as almost sequential work. You load up a bunch of data into a, into a training machine, the machine goes and processes on it, comes back with a result, load more data in by actually having a balanced read and write a model. Your ingest times go faster. So while you're working on a sequence, you can actually ingest more data into the system and it creates this overall efficiency. And it's these types of things that I think provided a great opportunity for innovation in the storage domain for these types of that's working >> requiring new architectures in storage, right? I mean, yeah, >>I mean, th th so one of the things that's happened in, in bringing SSDs in is that the old protocols were very slow, etc. And now we all the new protocols within in Vme and potentially even more new protocols coming in, uh, into this area. What's micron? What, how is micron making this thing happen? This speed that's gonna provide these insights? >>It's a fan fan. Fantastic question and you're absolutely right. The, the world of standards is something that we found over the course of time. If you can get a group of industry players wrapped around a given set of standards, you can create a large enough market and then people can innovate on top of that. And for us in the, in the storage domain, the big transitions had been in Sada and NBME. You see that happening today when we talked a little bit about maybe a teaser for what's coming a little later at, at our event, um, in some of the broader areas in the market, we're talking about how fabrics attach storage and infrastructure. And interestingly enough, where people are innovating quite a bit right now is around using the NBME infrastructure over fabrics themselves, which allows for shared storage across a network as opposed to just within a given server there. >>There's some fantastic companies that are out there that are actually delivering both software stacks and hardware accelerators to take advantage of existing NBME SSDs. But the protocol itself gets preserved. But then they can share these SSDs over a network, which takes a scenario where before you were locked with your storage stranded within a server and now you can actually distribute more broad. It's amazing difference, isn't it at that potential of looking at data over as broad an area as you want to. Absolutely. And being able to address it directly and having it done with standards and then having it done with low enough latency such that you aren't feeling severely disadvantaged, taking that SSD out of a box and making it available across a broad network. So you guys have a huge observation space. Uh, you sell storage to the enterprise, you sell storage to the cloud everywhere. >>I want to ask you about the macro because when you look at the traditional storage suppliers, you know, some of them are struggling right now. There aren't many guys that are really growing and gaining share because the cloud is eating away at that. You guys sell to the cloud. So that's fine. Moving, you know, arms dealer, whoever wins it may the best man win. Um, but, but at the same time, customers have ingested so much all flash. It's giving them head room and so they're like, Hey, I'm good for awhile. I used to have this spinning disc. I'd throw spinning disc at it at the problem till I said, give me performance headroom. That has changed. Now we certainly expect a couple of things that that will catch up and there'll be another step function. But there's also elasticity. Yes. Uh, you saw for instance, pure storage last quarter said, wow, hit the price dropped so fast, it actually hurt our revenues. >>And you'd say, well, wait a minute. If the price drops, we want people to buy more. There's no question that they will. It just didn't happen fast enough from the quarter. All of these interesting rip currents going on. I wonder what you're seeing in terms of the overall macro. Yeah. It's actually a fantastic question. If you go back in time and you look at the number of sequential quarters, when we had ASP decreases across the industry, it was more than six. And the duration from peak to trough on the spot markets was high double digit percentages. Not many markets go through that type of a transition. But as you suggested, there's this notion of elasticity that exists, which is once the price gets below a certain threshold, all of a sudden new markets open up. And we're seeing that happen today. We're seeing that happen in the client space. >>So, so these devices actually, they're going through this transition where companies are actually saying, you know what, we're going to design out the hard drive cages for all platforms across our portfolio going into the future. That's happening now. And it's happening largely because these price points are enabling that, that situation and the enterprise a similar nature in terms of average capacities and drives being deployed over time. So it's, I told you, I think the last time we saw John, I told just one of the most exciting times to be in the memory and storage industry. I'll hold true to that today. I, I'm super excited about it, but I just bought a new laptop and, and you know, I have, you know, a half a half a terabyte today and they said for 200 bucks you can get a terabyte. Yes. And so I said, Oh wow, I could take everything from 1983 and bring it, bring it over. >>Yeah. Interestingly, it was back ordered, you know, so I think, wow, it am I the only one, but this is going to happen. I mean, everybody's going to have, you know, make the price lower. Boom. They'll buy more. We, we, we believe that to be the case for the foreseeable future. Okay. Do you see yourself going in more into the capacity market as well with SSTs and I mean, this, this, this drop, let's do big opportunity or, yeah. Actually, you know, one of the areas that we feel particularly privileged to be able to, to engage in is the, the use of QLC technology, right. You know, quad level solar for bits per cell technology. We've integrated this into a family of, uh, of SSDs for the enterprise, or interestingly enough, we have an opportunity to displace hard drives at an even faster rate because the core capability of the products are more power efficient. >>They've got equal to, or better performance than existing hard drives. And when you look at the TCO across a Reed intensive workloads, it's actually, it's a no brainer to go replace those HDD workloads in the client space. There's segments of the market where we're seeing QLC to play today for higher, higher capacity value segments. And then there's another segment for performance. So it's actually each segment is opening up in a more dramatic way. So the last question, I know you got some announcements today. They haven't hit the wire yet, but what, can you show us a little leg, Derrick? What can you tell us? So I, I'll, I'll give you this much. The, um, the market today, if you go look in the enterprise segment is essentially NBME and SATA and SAS. And if you look at MDME in 20 2019 essential wearing crossover on a gigabyte basis, right? >>And it's gonna grow. It's gonna continue to grow. I mentioned earlier the 9,300 product that we use for machine learning, AI workloads, super high performance. There's a segment of the market that we haven't announced products in today that is a, a a mainstream portion of that market that looks very, very interesting to us. In addition, we can never forget that transitions in the enterprise take a really long time, right, and Sada is going to be around for a long time. It may be 15% of the market and 10% out a few years, but our customers are being very clear. We're going to continue to ship Satta for an extended period of time. The beautiful thing about about micron is we have wonderful 96 layer technology. There's a need in the market and both of the segments I described, and that's about as much as I can give you, I don't bet against data. Derek, thanks very much for coming on. Thank you guys so much. Thanks for coming >> on. Great to see me again. Thank you for having me >> and still you looking beautiful. Brilliant is always Dave. You're handsome. Okay, we're here in the Cube, breaking it down our guys. Seriously, let's let's let's wrap this up real quick. And then we'LL get into some of the fun conversations around some of the observations. But Day one's over. Clearly, Anthos is not just the rebrand. Although the CMO clearly talked about how wow has done that, they want to add more stuff into it. So that's the big topic here. We saw the migration tool and those migrate and then a lot of sun apogee here. AP eyes thoughts on Day one. >> Yes, eso John Anthos. I'm still trying to squint through it a little bit, and it's it's more than just Cooper Netease. We know that Google has a strong position, and being the open cloud is they've been saying for a couple of years. But you know what? Air these services who? The partners, How is this different from the, You know, dozens of Cooper, Nettie says. Solutions that are out there. So there's great buzz here at the show, Really good attendance here. A lot of really smart people. So we expect that coming off Google show So good start Day one. It was really excited to dig with you on some of the answers stuff as well as some of the surveillance pieces, which I've got some commentary on >> our partner and Chan sent a lot of time on the state. Duggan Cory, I know you've been putting in your ear the ground. What's happening? What do you see what he reporting? What have you collected? The >> I think one of the biggest things that I'm seeing in this entire conference to date has been almost a mind shift change. I mean, this is conferences called Google Next, and for a long time that's been one of the biggest problems. They're focusing on what's next rather than what is today, and they're inventing the future to almost at the expense of the present. I think the big messaging today was both about reassuring enterprises that yes, they're serious about this and also building a narrative where there now talking about coming at this from a position of being able to embrace customers where they are and speak their language? I think that that's transformative for Google. And it's something I don't think that we've seen them do seriously, at least not for very long. >> Dave. We've been talking about this all the time. Do they have the enterprise? Charles. We've been following the new team. When Diane Greene came in here to put the pieces together, it was a tough job. She had. They put the pieces together. But as Cory's pointing out, some one's like they're growing up now, saying Okay, we gotta realize that customers matter, not just addict attack or the future. This has been an Amazon playbook, customer, customer, customer and build a product. Customers. It seems to be your thoughts on this. >> Well, so I think Corey made a good point is they're always looking at the future. And if you want to get beyond search male and maps, I got to solve a problem today. And I'm not sure exactly like you said Stew. What problem Anthos is solving. I think it may still be a little early for this multi cloud management, but I think it is coming, you know, look, to think about how Amazon talks. Well, we're gonna eliminate heavy lifting. Microsoft clearly is got a software, a state that they could help you connect, you know, Oracle. Same. Same who? Google. It's always been about the tech and the future, and they're starting to get there, but still about to me, the tech and the future. >> It's a tragic Corey. I remember. I believe you were quoted in ah. News article recently is that Amazon listens to customers and Google historically talks to customers and tells them this is the way you should be doing it with a new Google. Now, >> I don't know. I don't think you change anything. Is biggest Google overnight. I think that there's a long story tradition of the Google engineer being the smartest person in the room. Just ask them. I'm kidding. You won't have to ask them. They're going to tell you on prompted. And I think that has to change because fundamentally addressing developers is a great way of building traction. It's a great way of getting to where they tend to be. But developers generally do not sign fifty million dollar deals. Well, more than once anyway. >> Well, this is a good point. This pretty customer attraction, which I think they've shown chops for the work they're doing that cnc f with continued open source. Great. But then when you got to go support the open source when you got to start putting lays together, this is where you start to get into procurement. Some requirements operations, security, a whole new level of grinding it out. I mean, the enterprise is a grind it out game. Google now has to go down that road stew. Dave, Corey, do you think they're ready? You think they're ready to grind it out? >> Way talked about in our kickoff this morning. Partnerships are critical and they had a bunch of really good ones up on stage this morning. You know, Cisco, VM wear some good ones to hang your hat on. You know, I would like to see more from an application standpoint as to where they sent him then they But you >> know, there's no question. I mean, I think there's an emphatic yes. Why? Because they got the global scale. They got the world's biggest cloud. They get a ton of dough. You know, we always say, though the best tech doesn't always win, and that's true. But usually the best tech runs out of money or they give up. You know, I don't see that happening in, >> Well, it's in the >> midterm or even semi long term for Google. So So I do think they have the chops to grind it out. >> I mean, I think they have attack. I've always said that love some of their tech, but they try to force Google Tech down the enterprise throats over the years. And I think Diane Green realized that that was the start of seeing real product management shop start to come in some of the work that they know they gotta get down and dirty on But to me it's a story that matters. The story has to be there. I think we're starting to see here, at least from my observation story of customers. So get in salt, create value, think this whole positioning of we want to be the open cloud where they say, Oh, you want to negotiate your contracts Don't want lock in You want developer productivity and you want operations I think it's a smart play by Google Stew. I think that's a good move. And again there, the dark horse in this. They don't have a lot to lose by going changing the game, changing the rules. Amazon, certainly in the lead, has a lot to lose, but they're so far ahead. Google just kind of catch up pretty quickly if they make the right moves. >> T K is making a lot of the right moves, but there's only so much it can be done so quickly. When you wind up in a story like we're seeing right now with customers who are taking workloads and haven't really been touched in there on from environments since nineteen ninety eight and they're migrating them into a GP environment and GPS formal deprecation Policy says We'LL give you one year's notice before turning anything off once it goes, g et. That's no time at all For an enterprise. Wait, we might have to move again. Absolutely not. It's still a language >> A C enterprise's years just to figure out Should we move? And where do we dio >> exactly their enterprise to go out of business and some of their divisions wouldn't know for five >> years. So is Google. What's what's the reaction when you press them on this, >> uh, usually starts with well, actually, And then they breathe and they reach for a whiteboard to show me exactly why I'm wrong. And then I lose interest and wander off, at which point they realized, Wow, you have no attention span for anything. Would you like to work here? And so far no dice, but we'LL see. >> So that's it. Well, that's a good business model, right? I think. Still your reaction to that? I mean, yeah, I read that they support rail For what? A deck like zillions of years. Right. This is what an example of how an enterprise needs to behave. >> Well, right, John Thie question we've had for a number of years is, you know, can cos b'more googly on DH. You know, the message here seems to be more. We're going to meet you where we are. We're going to be able to work with you on that. But there's some of those underlying things that Cory brings out that that need to change here. So that's a big change for Google. >> So what is the story that we heard from from Thomas carrying today? He said, Hybrid cloud Mina multi cloud, consistent framework with standard infrastructure in a platform to secure and manage data across the enterprise. Okay, sounds good. A lot of work to be done there. If you think about I mean, look at Amazon hybrid guard. If you announce outposts doesn't shift till later this year, it's a one small slice. There's got to be partnerships. There's gotta be an ecosystem to deliver on those three components of the vision on the story, and I say there's a lot of work to be done there now. What I do like about it is I do think that that multi cloud is a problem. I don't think thus far from most enterprises, it's a strategy I think it's if in multi vendor and so it will become a problem. The question I have is who's going to be in the best position to solve that problem? And you pointed out today still, well, Google has got VM wears a partner. Sisko is a partner. Red Hat as a partner. You know, IBM and Red Hat sort of lining up on that. Maybe service now tries to get into that game, but it's a wide open space. It's jump ball. >> Yeah, it's interesting. One of the things that I worry a little about and, you know, love. Corey's opinion on this is, you know, Google. Absolutely. If you talk about the container space, clear leadership, you know, first time I heard about containers, Google was front and center. They're leading this Cooper Netease march, but communities isn't magic, and even their server lis move movement. John and I interviewed Polly today, and it's very much, you know, Kay Native, we're going to take your containers and Goober Netease and extended service. That's not what I hear from you know, customers that I talked to today that are doing survivalists according what? What? What? What's your take there. >> I think that you sort of see almost the same problem emerging both with that narrative and the current multi cloud approach. It's It's not the fact that I can take this arbitrary code and Ronit anywhere that makes something server. Lis. We have a restaurant to run code or a raspberry pie or a burning dumpster with enterprise logo on the side of it that does. That isn't what's interesting. That isn't what delivers value to customers. It's the event model for starters, and I think right now that's not quite there. A lot of stuff. It's been announced and is coming out as we speak. And various block Post is still http endpoint activated, which means that you're not quite to an event model separately. What we're seeing with Anthos and the current approach to multicloud is you can deploy this to any cloud provider you'd like. Well, yes, in so far is a cloud provider to you is a bunch of disc, a pile of VMs and a network, and that's about it. That's not a cloud in the modern sense that is effectively outsourcing your data center and you'll find it runs on money pretty quickly. Once you start down that path, it's the higher level services, these renovations. >> This brings up a good point and that I think what I'm seeing and this is what I think, A lot of people, it's very aspirational. Views on Google People love Google. They love. They know about Google and they hope that they're as good as Amazon tomorrow. And let's just face it, Amazon is way out front. So I think this expectations for Google that are a little bit to hide. I think what I'm hearing the executives, at least the positive side would be. They understand where they are. I mean, the fact that we're not home on edge and I ot and all these other things, it means that they're still in foundational mode, in my opinion. So I mean, think about it. They're just getting their act together, building that foundational things. So I think they're cautious because we're not hearing about the eye ot. We're not hearing about some of the more advanced challenges that the enterprise is air. Having heard a little bit about from the sigh from a group that came on about data migration, Sata, Gata so OK, they got database at the Big Cloud. Big table, Big queer. OK, great stuff. Ml So data, certainly in their wheelhouse. But outside of that, I mean they're still foundational. So >> tomorrow's product day, though. So you know he may be here more there. I'm surprised they didn't hear more about machine intelligence. Give it. No, they talked about a little bit. But this company is the leader in a >> way. Maybe that's part of the issue. And I think that there is no question that when you want something far future that looks like robots from space Bill, you go to Google. You know that. I think there's a lot less of an awareness that Okay, I just need a bunch of the EMS to run somewhere, and I feel like that is more or less. It's a story of today, >> and you know Google. I mean, like their story. You know, I love the code cloud code, cloud run, cloud building. They have all the right. Like Jeff Bob's like linguistic that gets my attention. You get is kind of like it feels like it feels like they're really close. It's getting so >> far away. Cultures also extremely hard. You have a bunch of execs that have just shown up from Oracle seemingly yesterday in these terms, and there's a lot of knee jerk reactions of, Oh, Google is now taking on a bunch of Oracle approaches, like hiring sales people and talking to customers. That's not a bad thing. Meanwhile, the executives who come Teo out of Oracle after decades there and are now working at Google. We're having to adjust to a more rapid pace of innovation to this new world in which they have customers that don't actively hate. Um, and it's turning into a very different story for everyone involved. I'm curious to see what comes out of it, but it's still very much earlier, >> and I think they could build fast. Like you said, they like Google's. The parties like him. What they don't like about Google is responsiveness and being, you know, the white gloves they need. They need to have that kind of service ability. >> And Google also, by having a single overarching brand in the term of the word Google is their consumer efforts do wind up playing into people's perception of through the clouds like yes, we want Google to listen to us? No, not through our thermostats. >> Well, they got a lot of Regis developing. They got the footprint. Guys, great job student. Final comments. >> I mean, just you talk about the customer you've heard there was. You know, my comment. My comment on Twitter this morning that got the most reaction is you no question to retail or why are you choosing Google Cloud? Answer is, you're not Amazon, and you know, the long and short being the alternative to a leader in the market today. Not a bad thing. So Google has, you know, a good position at the market. They we always knew that they had great tak es o >> Also thing on that comments do is that I think in watching Google, I think I personally in critical of what they need to do more obviously. But they know their people are doing the work. I mean, you've got to grind it out to me. This is a grind it out game. It's on ly early. You gotta get the discipline up there. They got the right product management type chops and there Can they get those things done that Thomas Curry and, um, it's Avery can bring to the table and kind of shed the Oracle and put the New Jersey on and fight the battle with the new Google Way. That's going to be the tell Signe. >> Well, the hard part for me is it. So it's hard to measure. You see some logo's. You don't know what they're really buy. I mean, with them is on, you know, it's it's infrastructures of service. Microsoft. Okay, I'm not sure. How much is there Oracle? Clearly not sure, you know, etcetera. But so lookit Proof was talking to customers, right? Huh? How much they're actually adopting this stuff for riel Business problems. >> Yeah, not multi cloud if your infrastructure runs on a different cloud provider. But you're using g sweet. I mean that that's not really what people think of when they say multi cloud. But that is what analysts chalk it up as something >> it's a battle at least accomplishes lining up. (upbeat orchestral music) >> Hi I'm Peter Burris and welcome to another CUBE Conversation from our wonderful Palo Alto Studios. Great conversation today with Jeremy Werner who is the vice president of SSD Marketing at Toshiba Memory, Jeremy welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you Peter, great to be here. >> You know Jeremy, one of the reasons why I find you being here so intriguing interesting is there's a lot going on in the industry. We talk about new types of workloads: AI, cloud, deep learning, all these other things, all these technologies are-- all these applications and workloads are absolutely dependent on the idea that the infrastructure has to start focusing less on just persisting memory and focusing more on delivering memory-- delivering data to these very advanced applications. That's where flash comes in. Tell us a little bit about the role that flash has had in the industry. >> It's amazing, thank you for recognizing that. So, flash has a long history. 30 years ago actually Toshiba invented flash memory, and it's had a transformation on people's lives everywhere, on all kinds of products starting with the very first application for flash being-- for NAND flash being kind of removable memory cards. You had the digital camera revolution, then it found its way into cell phones, that enabled smart phones and people carrying around all their media etc. And now we're in kind of this large third phase adoption which is, like you mentioned, the transition from persistent storage with a hard drive where, your data was available but not really available to do a lot with. To now storage on an SSD, which allows artificial intelligence, business analytics, and all the new workloads that are changing business paradigms. >> So clearly flash adoption is increasing in the data center. Wikibon has been talking about this for quite some time. My colleague David Foyer was one of the first people out there to project the role that flash was going to play within the data center. How are you seeing as you talk to customers, as you talk to some of the big systems manufacturers and some of the hyperscalers. How are you hearing or what are they saying about how they are applying and will intend to apply flash in the market today? >> It's amazing when we talk to customers they really can't get enough flash. As an industry we just came out of a major shortage of flash memory, and now a lot of new technologies are coming online. So, we at Toshiba, just announced our 96 layer 3D flash, our QLC flash. This is all in an attempt to get more flash storage into the hands of these customers so that they can bring these new applications to market. And this transformation, it's happening quickly although maybe not as quickly as people think because there's a very long road ahead of us. Still you look out 10 years into the future, you're talking about 40 or 50% growth per year, at least for the next decade. >> So I want to get to that in a second, but I want to touch upon something that you said that many of the naysayers about flash predicted that there would be shortfalls and they were very Chicken Little like. Oh my gosh, the sky is going to fall, the prices are going to go out of control. We did have a shortage, and it was a pretty significant one, but we were able to moderate some of the price increases so it didn't lead to a whole bunch of design losses or a disruption in how we thought about new workloads, did it? >> True, no it didn't, and I think that's the value of flash memory. Basically what we saw was the traditional significant decline in pricing took a pause, and you look back 20 years ago, I mean flash was 1000 times more expensive. And as we move down that cost curve, it enables more and more applications to adopt it. Even in today's pricing, flash is an amazingly valuable tool to data centers and enterprise as they roll out new workloads and particularly around analytics, and artificial intelligence, machine learning, kind of all the interesting new technologies that you hear about. >> Yeah, and I think that's probably going to be the way that these kinds of blips in supply are going to be-- it'll perhaps lead to a temporary moderation in how fast the prices drop. >> That's right. >> It's not going to lead to massive disruption and craziness. And I will also say this, you mentioned 20 years ago stuff was really expensive and I cut my teeth on mainframe stuff. And I remember when disk drives on the mainframe were $3500 a megabyte, so it could be a lot worse. So, let's now-- flash is a great technology, SSD is a great technology, but it's made valuable by an overall ecosystem. >> That's right. >> There's a lot of other supporting technologies that are really crucial here. Disk has been dominated by interfaces like SATA for a long time. Done very well by us. Allowed for a fair amount of parallelism, a lot of pathing to mainly disk, but that's starting to change as we start thinking about flash coming on and being able to provide much much faster access times. What's going on with SATA and what's on the horizon? >> Yeah, so great question. Really what we saw with SATA in about 2010 was the introduction of a six gigabit SATA interface, and that was a doubling of the prior speed that was available, and then zero progress since then, and actually the SATA roadmap has nothing forward. So people have been stuck effectively with that SATA interface for the last eight years. Now they've had some choices. You look at the existing ecosystem, the existing infrastructure, SATA and SAS drives were both choices, and SAS is a faster interface today up to 12 gigabit. It's full duplex where SATA is half duplex, so you can read and write in parallel, so actually you can get four times the speed on a SAS drive that you would get on a SATA drive today. The challenge with SAS, why everyone went to SATA-- I won't say everyone went to SATA, but maybe three or four times the adoption rate of SATA versus SAS was the SAS products that were available on the market really didn't deliver the most economical deployment of-- >> They were more expensive. >> They were more expensive. >> Alright, but that's changing. >> That is changing, so what we've been trying to do is prepare and work with our customers for a life after SATA. And it's been a long time coming, like I said eight years on this current interface. Recently we introduced what we call a value SAS product line. The value SAS product line brings a lot of the benefits of SAS, so the faster performance, the better reliability, and the better manageability, into the existing infrastructure, but at SATA-like economics. And that I think is going to be critical as customers look at the long-term life after SATA, which is the transition to NVMe and a flash-only world without having to be fully dependent on changing everything that they've ever done to move from SATA to NVMe. So, the life after SATA preparation on customers is how do I make the most out of my existing knowledge, my existing infrastructure capabilities. What's readily available from a support perspective as I prepare for that eventual transition to NVMe. >> Yeah I want to pick up on that notion of higher performance at improving cost of SAS and just make sure that we're clear here that SATA is an electrical interface. It has certain performance characteristics, but these new systems are putting an enormous amount of stress on that interface. And that means you can't put more work on top of that, not only from an application standpoint, but as you said crucially also from a management standpoint. When you put more reporting or you put more automation or your put more AI on some of these devices, that creates new load on those drives. Going to SAS releases that headroom, so now we can bring more management workloads. That's important, and this is what I want to test. That's important because as we do these more complex applications, we're pushing more work down closer to the data, and we're using a lot more data, it's going to require more automation. Is SAS going to provide the headroom that we need to actually bring new levels of reliability to more complex work? >> I believe it will, absolutely. SAS is the world's most trusted interface. So, when it comes to reliability, our SAS drives in the field are the most reliable product that our customers purchase today. And we take that same core technology and package in a way to make it truly an economical replacement for SATA. >> So we at Wikibon now have observed NVMe, so I want to turn a little bit of attention to that. We have observed that NVMe is in fact going to have a significant impact. But when Toshiba Memory is looking at what kinds of things customers are looking for, you're saying not so much SATA, let's focus on SAS, and let's bring NVMe online as the system designs are there. Is that kind of what it's about? >> You know I think it's a complicated situation. Not everyone is ready for everything at the same time. Even today, there's some major cloud providers that have just about fully transitioned to NVMe SSDs. And that transition has been challenging. So what we see is customers over the course of the next four or five years, their readiness for that transition from today to five years from now, that's happening based on the complexity of what they need to manage from a physical infrastructure, a software ecosystem perspective. So some customers have already migrated, and other customers are years away. And that is really what we're trying to help customers with. We have a very broad NVMe offering. Actually we have more NVMe SSDs than any other product line, but for a lot of those customers who want to continue with the digital transformation in to data analytics, in to realizing the value of all the data that they have available and transforming that into improved business processes, improved business results. Those customers don't want to have to wait for their infrastructure to catch up for NVMe. Value SAS gives them a means to make that transition, while continuing on to take advantage of all the capabilities of flash. One of the things that we always talk about, one of my responsibilities is product planning product definition, and one of the things that we always talk about is our ideal SSD, the bottleneck is the flash. In other words if you look at a drive there's so many things that could bottleneck performance. It could be the interface, it could be the power that you can consume and dissipate, it could be the megahertz in your controller >> You sound like an electrical engineer. >> I am an electrical engineer, but I'm a marketing guy, right? So, there's all kinds of bottlenecks, and when we design an SSD we want the flash to be the bottleneck cause at the end of the day, that's fundamentally what people need and want. And so, you look at SATA, and it's like, not only is it a bottleneck, but it's clamping the performance at 50% or less than 50% of what's achievable in the same power footprint, in the same cost footprint, so it's just not practical I mean the thing's eight years old so-- >> Yeah. Yeah. >> In technology eight years is a lot of time. >> Especially these days, and so to simplify that perhaps, or say that a little bit differently, bottom line is SAS is a smaller step for existing customers who don't have the expertise necessary to re-engineer an entire system and infrastructure. >> That's right, it gives them that stepping stone. >> So you also mentioned that there' a difference between the flash and the SSD, and that difference is an enormous amount of value-wide engineering that leads to automation, reliability, types of things you can do down at the drive. Talk to us a little bit about Toshiba, Toshiba Memory, as a supplier of that differentiating engineering that's going to lead to even superior performance at better cost and greater manageability and time to value on some of these new flash-based workloads. >> So I'm amazed at the quality of our engineering team and the challenges that they face to constantly be bringing out new technologies that keep up with the flash memory curve. And I actually joke sometimes, I say it's like being on a hamster wheel. It never stops, the second that you release a product you're developing the next product. I mean it's one of the fastest product life cycles in the entire industry, and you're talking about extremely complicated, complex systems with tight firmware development. So what we do at Toshiba Memory, we actually engineer our own SOCs and controllers, develop the RTL, manage that from basically architecture to production. We write all our own firmware, we assemble our own drives, we put it all together. The process for actually defining a product to when we release it is about five years. So we have meetings now, we're talking about what are we going to release in 2023? And that is one of the big challenges, because these design cycles are very long so anticipating where innovation is going, and today's innovation is at the speed of software, right? Not the speed of hardware. So how do you build that kind of flexibility and capability into your product so that you can keep up with new innovations no one might have seen five years ago? It seems like it's something that happen overnight, but there's been a lot of hard work going on for quite a lot of years, even going back to heck when you and I worked together. >> Danny: That's right. >> A company use to be called EMC. NVMe, so first of all just bring everybody up to speed as to what you work on inside the Dell family. >> Danny: Sure, so my responsibility at now Dell EMC has been this whole notion of emergence systems. New technologies, new capabilities that are just coming into broad market adoption, broad readiness, technological feasibility, and those kinds of things. And then making sure that as a company we're prepared for their adoption and inclusion in our product portfolio. So it's a great set of capabilities a great set of work to be doing especially if you have a short attention span like I do. >> Danny, I spend a lot of time these days in the open source world. You talk about people are moving faster, people are trying lots of technologies. You've been doing some really hard work. The company and the industry in the standards world. What's the importance of standards these days, and bring us back to how this NVMe stuff started. >> So a great way to get everybody up to speed as you mentioned when you kicked off. NVMe, an overnight success, almost 11 years in the making now. The very first NVMe standard was about 2007. EMC joined the NVMe consortium in 2008 along with an Austin, Texas computer company called Dell. So Dell and EMC were both in the front row of defining the NVMe standard, and essentially putting in place a set of standards, a set of architectures, a set of protocols, product adoption capabilities, compatibility capabilities for the entire industry to follow, starting in 2008. Now you know from our work together that the storage industry likes to make sure that everything's mature, everything works reliably. Everything has broad interoperability standards and things like that. So since 2008, we've largely been about how do we continue to build momentum and generate support for a new storage technology that's based on broadly accepted industry standards, in order to allow the entire industry to move forward. Not just to achieve the most out of the flash revolution, but prepare the industry for coming enhancements to storage class memory. >> Yeah, so storage class memory you mentioned things like flash. One thing we've looked at for a long time is when flash rolled out. There's a lot of adoption on the consumer side first, and then that drove the enterprise piece, but flash today is still done through Ikusi interface with SaaS or Sata. And believe we're finally getting rid of when we go to NVMe. What some in the industry have called the horrible Ikusi stack. >> Danny: That's right. >> So explain to us a little bit about first, the consumer piece of where this fits first, and how it gets the enterprise. Where are we in the industry today with that? >> Yeah so as you pointed out a number of the new media technologies have actually gained a broad acceptance and a grounds full of support starting in the consumer space. The rapid adoption of mobile devices whether initially iPods and iPhones and things like that. Tablets where the more memory you have the more songs you carry, the more pictures you can take. A lot of very virtuous cycle type things occurred in the consumer space to allow flash to go from a fairly expensive perhaps niche technology to broad high volume manufacturing. And with high volume manufacturing comes much lower costs and so we always knew that flash was fast when we first started working on it at EMC in 2005. It became fast and robust when we shipped in 2008. It went from flash to robust to affordable with technologies like the move from SLC to MLC, and now TLC flash and the continuing advances of Moore's law. And so flash has been the beneficiary of high volume consumer economics along with our friend Moore's law over a number of years. >> Okay, so on the NVMe piece, your friends down in Round Rock in Dell. They've got not only the storage portfolio, but on the consumer side. There's pieces like my understanding NVMe already in the market for some part of this today, correct. >> That's right, I think one of the very first adoption scenarios for NVMe was in Lightweight laptop device. The storage deck could be more efficient. The fundamental number of gates in Silicon required to implement the stack was more efficient. Power was more efficient, so a whole bunch of things that were beneficial to a mobile high volume client device like an ultra light, ultra portable laptop made it a great place to launch the technology. >> Okay, and so bring us to what does that mean then for storage? Is that available in the enterprise storage today? >> Danny: Yeah. >> And where is that today and where is that today, and where are we going to see in the next years though? >> So here's the progression that the industry has more or less followed. If we went from that high volume, ultra light laptop device to very inexpensive M.2 devices that could be used in laptops and desktops more broadly, also gained a fair amount of traction with certain used cases and hyperscalers. And then as the spec matured and as the enterprise ecosystem around it, broader data integrity type solutions in the sili-case itself. A number of other things that are bread and butter for enterprise class devices. As those began to emerge, we've now seen NVMe move forward from laptop and client devices to high volume M.2 devices to full function, full capability dual ported enterprise NVMe devices really crossing over this year. >> Okay, so that means we're going to see not only in the customer pieces but should be seeing really enterprise roll out in I'm assuming things like storage arrays, maybe hyper converged. All the different flavors in the not too distant future. >> Absolutely right, the people who get paid to forecast these things when they look into their crystal balls. They've talked about when does NVMe get close enough to its predecessor SaaS to make the switch over be a no brainer. And often times, you get a performance factor where there's more value or you get a cost factor where suddenly that becomes the way the game is won. In the case of NVMe versus SaaS, both of those situations value and cost are more or less a wash right now across the industry. And so there are very few impediments to adoption. Much like a few years ago, there were very few impediment to adoption of enterprise SSDs versus high performance HDDs. The 15Ks and the 10K HDDs. Once we got to close enough in terms of cost parity. The entire industry went all flash over night. >> Yeah, it's a little bit different than say the original adoption of flash versus HDD. >> Danny: That's right. >> HDD versus SSD. Remember back, you had to have the algebra sheet. And you said okay, how many devices did I have.? What's the power savings that I could get out of that? Plus the performance that I had and then does this makes sense. It seems like this is a much more broadly applicable type of solution that we'll see. >> Danny: Right. >> For much faster adoption. >> Do you remember those days of a little goes a long way? >> Stu: Yeah. >> And then more is better? And then almost be really good, and so that's where we've come over what seems like a very few years. >> Okay, so we've only been talking about NVMe, the thing I know David Foyer's been look a lot from an architectural standpoint. Where we see benefit obviously from NVMe but NVMe over Fabrics is the thing that has him really excited if you talk about the architectures, maybe just explain a little bit about what I get with NVMe and what I'll get added on top with the over fabric piece of that. >> Danny: Sure. >> And what's that roll out look like? >> Can I tell you a little story about what I think of as the birth of NVMe over Fabrics? >> Stu: Please. >> Some of your viewers might remember a project at EMC called Thunder. And Thunder was PCI flash with an RDMA over ethernet front end on it. We took that system to Intel developers forum as a proof of concept. Around the corner from me was an engineer named Dave Min-turn, who's an Intel engineer. Who had almost exactly the same software stack up and running except it was an Intel RDMA capability nick and an Intel flash drive, and of course some changes to the Intel processor stack to support the used case that he had in mind. And we started talking and we realized that we were both counting the number of instructions from packet arriving across the network to bytes being read or written on the vis-tory fast PCI E device. And we realized that there has to be a better way, and so from that day, I think it was September 2013, maybe it was August. We actually started working together on how can we take the benefits of the NVMe standard that exists mapped onto PCI E. And then map those same parameters as cleanly as we possibly can onto, at that time ethernet but also InfiniBand, Fiber channel, and perhaps some other transports as a way to get the benefits of the NVMe software stack, and build on top of the new high performance capabilities of these RDMA capable interconnects. So it goes way back to 2013, we moved it into the NVMe standard as a proposal in 2014. And again three, four years later now, we're starting to see solutions roll out that begin to show the promise that we saw way back then. >> Yeah and the challenge with networking obviously is sounds like you've got a few different transport layers that I can use there. Probably a number of different providers. How baked is the standard? Where do things like hits the interoperability fit into the mix? When do customers get their hands on it, and what can they expect the roll out to be? >> We're clearly at the beginning of what's about to be a very, I think long and healthy future for NVMe over Fabrics. I don't know about you. I was at Flash Memory Summit back in August in Santa Clara and there were a number of vendors there starting to talk about NVMe over Fabrics basics. FPGA implementation, system on chip implementations, software implementations across a variety of stacks. The great thing was NVMe over Fabrics was a phrase of the entire show. The challenging thing was probably no two of those solutions interoperated with each other yet. We were still at the running water through the pipes phase, not really checking for leaks and getting to broad adoption. Broad adoption I think comes when we've got a number of vendors broad interoperability, multi-supplier, component availability and those things, that let a number of implementations exists and interoperate because our customers live in a diverse multi-vendor environment. So that's what it will take to go from interesting proof of concept technology which I think is what we're seeing in terms of early customers engagement today to broad base deployment in both existing fiber channel implementations, and also in some next generation data center implementations, probably beginning next year. >> Okay, so Danny, I talked to a lot of companies out there. Everyone that's involved in this (mumbles) has been talking about NVMe over Fabric for a couple of years now. From a user standpoint, how are they going to help sort this out? What will differentiate the check box. Yes, I have something that follows this to, oh wait this will actually help performance so much better. What works with my environment? Where are the pitfalls and where are the things that are going to help companies? What's going to differentiate the marketplace? >> As an engineer, we always get into the speeds and the feeds and the weeds on performance and things like that, and while those are all true. We can talk about fewer and fewer instructions in the networks stack. Fewer and fewer instructions in the storage stack. We can talk about more efficient Silicon implementations. More affinity for multi-processor, multi-core processing environments, more efficient operating system implementations and things like that. But that's just the performance side. The broader benefits come to beginning to move to more cost effective data center fabric implementation. Where I'm not managing an orange wire and a blue wire unless that's really what I want. There's still a number of people who want to manage their fiber channel and will run NVMe over that. They get the compatibility that they want. They get the policies that they want and the switch behavior that they want, and the provisioning model that they want and all of those things. They'll get that in an NVMe over Fabrics implementation. A new data center however will be able to go, you know what, I'm all in day one on 25, 5000 bit gigabit ethernet as my fundamental connection of choice. I'm going 400 gigabit ethernet ports as soon as Andy Beck-tels shine or somebody gives them to me and things like that. And so if that's the data center architecture model that I'm in, that's a fundamental implementation decision that I get to make knowing that I can run an enterprise grade, storage protocol over the top of that, and the industry is ready. My external storage is ready, my servers are ready and my workloads can get the benefit of that. >> Okay, so if I just step back for a second, NVMe sounds like a lot of it is what we would consider the backend in proving that NVMe over Fabrics helps with some of the front end. From a customer stand point, what about their application standpoint? Can they work with everything that they have today? Are there things that they're going to want to do to optimize for that? So the storage industry just take care of it for them. What do they think about today and future planning from an application standpoint? >> I think it's a matter of that readiness and what is it going to take. The good news and this has analogs to the industry change from HDD to SSDs in the first place. The good new is you can make that switch over today and your data management application, your database application, your warehouse, you're analytics or whatever. Not one line of software changes. NVMe device shows up in the block stack of your favorite operating system, and you get lower latency, more IOs in parallel. More CPU back for your application to run because you don't need it in the storage stack anymore. So you get the benefits of that just by changing over to this new protocol. For applications who then want to optimize for this new environment, you can start thinking about having more IOs in flight in parallel. You could start thinking about what happens when those IOs are satisfied more rapidly without as much overhead in and interrupt processing and a number of things like that. You could start thinking about what happens when your application goes from hundred micro-second latencies and IOs like the flash devices to 10 microsecond or one microsecond IOs. Would perhaps with some of these new storage class memory devices that are out there. Those are the benefits that people are going to see when they start thinking about an all NVMe stack. Not just being beneficial for existing flash implementations but being fundamentally required and mandatory to get the benefits of storage class memory implementations. So this whole notion of future ready was one of the things that was fundamental in how NVMe was initially designed over 10 years ago. And we're starting to see that long term view pay benefits in the marketplace. >> Any insight from the customer standpoint? Is it certain applications or verticals where this is really going to help? I think back to the move to SSDs. It was David Foyer who just wet around the entire news feed. He was like, database, database, database is where we can have the biggest impact. What's NVMe going to impact? >> I think what we always see with these things. First of all, NVMe is probably going to have a very rapid advancement and impact across the industry much more quickly than the transition from HDD to SSD, so we don't have to go through that phase of a little goes a long way. You can largely make the switch and as your ecosystem supports it as your vendor of choice supports it. You can make that switch and to a large extent have the application be agnostic from that. So that's a really good way to start. The other place is you and I have had this conversation before. If you take out a cocktail napkin and you draw an equation that says time equals money. That's an obvious place where NVMe and NVMe over Fabrics benefit someone initially. High speed analytics, real time, high frequency trading, a number of things where more efficiency. My ability to do more work per unit time than yours gives me a competitive advantage. Makes my algorithms better, exposes my IP in a more advantageous way. Those are wonderful places for these types of emerging technologies to get adopted because the value proposition is just slam dunk simple. >> Yeah, so running through my head are all the latest buzz words. Is everything at Wikibon when we did our predictions for this year, data is at the center of all of it. But machine learning, AI, heck blockchain, Edge computing all of these things can definitely be affected by that. Is NVMe going to help all of them? >> Oh machine learning. Incredible high bandwidth application. Wonderful thing stream data in, compute on it, get your answers and things like that. Wonderful benefits for a new squeaky clean storage stack to run into. Edge where often times, real time is required. The ability to react to a stimulus and provide a response because of human safety issue or a risk management issue or what have you. Any place that performance let's you get close, get you outer close to real time is a win. And the efficiency of NVMe has a significant advantage in those environments. So NVMe is largely able to help the industry be ready just at the time that new processing models are coming in such as machine learning, artificial intelligence. New data center deployment architectures like the Edge come in and the new types of telemetry and algorithms that they maybe running there. It's really a technology that's arriving just at the time that the industry needs it. >> Yeah, was reading up on some of the blogs on the Dell sites. Jeff Brew-dough said, "We should expect "to see things from 2018." Not expecting you to pre-announce anything but what should we be looking for from Dell and the Dell family in 2018 when it comes to this space? >> We're very bullish on NVMe. We've been pushing very, very hard in the standards community. Obviously, we have already shipped NVMe for a series of internal use cases in our storage platforms. So we have confidence in the technology, its readiness, the ability of our software stacks to do what they need to do. We have a robust, multi-supplier supply chain ready to go so that we can service our customers, and provide them the choice in capacities and capabilities and things like that that are required to bet your business, and long term supply assurance for and things like that. So we're seeing the next year or so be the full transition to NVMe and we're ready for it. We've been getting ready for a long time. Now, the ecosystem is there and we're predicting very big things in the future. >> Okay, so Danny, you've been working on this for 11 years. Give us just a little bit of insight. What you learned, what this group has learned from previous transitions? What's excited you the most? Give us a little bit of sausage making? >> What's been funny about this is we talk about the initial transition to flash, and just getting to the point where a little goes a long way. That was a three year journey. We started in 2005, we shipped in 2008. We moved from there. We flash in a raise as a tier, as a cache, as the places where a little latency, high performance media adds value and those things. Then we saw the industry begin to develop into some server centric storage solutions. You guys have been at the front of forecasting what that market looks like with software defined storage. We see that in technologies like ScaleIO and VSAN where their abilities to start using the media when it's resident in a server became important. And suddenly that began to grow as a peer to the external storage market. Another market San alternative came along with them. Now we're moving even further out where it seems like we use to ask why flash? And it will get asked that. Now it's why not flash? Why don't we move there? So what we've seen is a combination of things. As we get more and more efficient low latency storage protocols. The bottle neck stops being about the network and start being about something else. As we get more multi-core compute capabilities and Moore's law continues to tickle along. We suddenly have enough compute and enough bandwidth and the next thing to target is the media. As we get faster and faster more capable media such as the move to flash and now the move to storage class memory. Again the bottle neck moves away from the media, maybe back to something else in the stack. As I advance compute in media and interconnect, suddenly it becomes beneficial for me to rewrite my application or re-platform it, and create an entire new set of applications that exploit the current capabilities or the technologies. And so we are in that rinse, lather repeat cycle right now in the technology. And for guys like you and me who've been doing this for awhile, we've seen this movie before. We know how it hands. It actually doesn't end. There are just new technologies and new bottlenecks and new manifestations of Moore's law and Holmes law and Metcalfe's law that come into play here. >> Alright so Danny, any final predictions from you on what we should be seeing? What's the next thing you work on that you call victory soon right? >> Yes, so I'm starting to lift my eyes a little bit and we think we see some really good capabilities coming at us from the device physicists in the white coats with the pocket protectors back in the fabs. We're seeing a couple of storage class memories begin to come to market now. You're led by Intel and microns, 3D XPoint but a number of other candidates on the horizon that will take us from this 100 microsecond world to a 10 microsecond world maybe to a 100 nanosecond world. And you and I we back here talking about that fairly soon I predict. >> Excellent, well Danny Cobb always a pleasure to catch up with you. Thanks so much for walking us through all of the pieces. I'm Lisa Martin with my co host Stu Miniman, we've had a great morning, main stage, Michael Dell, Patt Gelsinger, Google, et cetera. We're excited to be joined by Doctor Sadir, Sadir is kind of awesome, the CTO of Dell EMC, Stewart, welcome to The Cube! >> Thank you, thanks for having me. >> We're excited to have you here, so you were an EMC guy, we talked about that. When people think of Dell, they think of, well maybe used to, PCs, when they think of EMC they think of storage arrays, talk to us about, you know, one year post combination almost, how has your customers' perception changed, what have you heard in the last year? >> Sure yeah, it's been a pretty dramatic change, I would say in the sense of about a year ago when the deal was, or actually two years ago when the deal was first announced that it would be happening there was a lot of skepticism in the customer base obviously around A, what does this mean, how's it going to come together? I think a year into it people started to see some initial signs of better together. And now a year later we're seeing dramatic, dramatic positive energy and feedback from customer base on how, when they're actually seeing the products and solutions coming together in a combined solution I think that's, I mean we used to joke in the old days where our products, you know, EMC's got our portfolio, and our products would only come together on the PO, that was the common joke inside. And I think that perception is changing quite a lot now. >> So bring us into the storage group, because it was one that you know, if you look there were a lot of places where there were no overlaps. Storage, there was a long partnership between Dell and EMC then Dell had acquired a couple of companies, EMC, as you said already had a very large portfolio so bring us inside a little bit, especially kind of with your, you know, your CTO, your technologist. What are those lenses you look through and where are we into, you know, things coming together soon? >> Sure, I think it's a great question, I know and thank you because one of the things that people miss is that the portfolio strategy is a conscious strategy, right? It is really hard to cover the entire spectrum of work loads, use cases with a single widget, if you will. And a lot of our competitors will try to convince customers of that and they're finding that out themselves that it's really hard to cover that gamut so I think fundamentally, first and foremost the portfolio strategy is very important now that said, it is acknowledged and I'll admit that it is perhaps more in the portfolio right now than perhaps is needed. And so that in fact is one of our first, one of our big priorities for this year is to simplify the portfolio because it's confusing for our customers and so we're definitely working towards that. You'll see that roll out starting next year. And then over the next few years. >> So on that front, and sort of maybe waiting things out to simplify, from an innovation perspective Michael Dell also talked on main stage this morning about the importance of customer innervation but I'd love to understand how if you can take us kind of more through that, how is Dell EMC innovating internally so that you can be leaders in innovation-- >> Yeah, that's a great question, it's a great question because you know when you have a multi billion dollar business everybody assumes it's really really hard to innovate and it is, there's no question because you've got a big business to sustain. Now but the, I completely agree with Michael, what he said on stage and what he said to us privately which is in fact Dick Egan used to say the same thing. Founder of EMC he was, if there's one thing that you should be comfortable with, it's change and because this industry is changing like crazy, and I've been in the industry now for what, coming up on 20 years. Seen a lot, you know from FDDI to wherever you're at today. And I'm still constantly amazed by how much change is going on even now. So we do believe in change, we believe in actually innovating constantly, and Jeff Budrow, one of my manager he's a big believer in change as well, we're working on a lump number of innovations internally, organic innovations, big innovations. I can't tell you much about that today but we'll hopefully as we get closer to the next year we'll be able to talk more about it. That said, we're innovating on our existing products as well, we've refreshed our entire portfolio at Dell EMC World earlier this year. At VMWorld just now we announced our availability of our X2 platform which is the next generation of the XGMIL platform, so we're constantly innovating and as a result it's more of a rolling thunder as opposed to like a big bang. >> So I kind of look at it, there's kind of two ways that things are changing along storage. Number one there's kind of the underneath pieces, so you talked about going from FDDI, you know when we saw from disk to flash for EMC was you know, early on that that kind of reemergence of flash after a couple of decades of it being you know, not used for awhile. We've got things like NVME, NVME over fabric coming out so we're going to start there, maybe by one o'clock after there's kind of the operating model on how we change things because we've converged and cloud and all those but on some of those underlying pieces which I know keep the storage people kind of really engaged, you know where are we today with some of those transitions, what are some of the things that you're looking at over the next kind of 12, 24, 36 months? >> Terrific, I mean I see actually three vectors of change impacting the storage business and impacting us. One is the media like you said, there's NVME and we'll talk a little bit more about that. There's actually a whole bunch of stuff beyond NVME right, storage class memory, persistent memory coming out. Second set of things is consumption models, what we call consumption model round, whether it's a cloud consumption model, where if you think of cloud actually more as a consumption model as opposed to a destination. And software defined is a big thing, I think that's going to dramatically change the game, especially when you combine it with things like persistent memory. And then the third thing I think is the new wave of applications as well, that's generating a whole new class of data and adds a whole new set of requirements. For example, real time streaming analytics, right, that changes the, you can't deal with block and file and object in those worlds, you're dealing with new semantics. So those are some of the vectors that we're looking at in terms of. >> So let's start with kind of the low level, the media, you know some of those things right, what is data, what is memory, you know all those things blurring. Where you know, I hear, there seems to be so many people NVME, NVME over fabrics seems to be-- >> Hey look, so let me hit that off right in front. Right so it was 10 years ago that Dell and EMC independently before obviously we were one company actually co founded the contortion that invented NVME so we saw the meat of this technology, the limitations of SAS and SATA 10 years ago, we saw this coming. We helped drive the standards including NVME over fabric standard, and that's like, well before some of these companies that are claiming NVME today weren't actually even born. So NVME to me is a journey, right there's the there's the bus, changing from the SAS bus to the NVME bus. That's one part, then there's the media that stands behind them all, the NVME transport. Things like 3D cross point that are starting to come out, and then even beyond that you get to really persistent memory type of applications. So we see this as a journey, we're going to be rolling our NVME in all our products across the entire portfolio starting this year, later this year. For first, today scale IO already supports NVME devices in 14G, so we're going to, you're going to see that. >> Yeah, I guess my follow up, just to dig in a little deeper because when we got the CTO you've got to dig down. There were some, when flash came out, they were like oh yeah, whatever, I'm going to throw a couple of percentage in, well we saw flash greatly change architectures, it changed some of those application considerations-- >> Absolutely. >> Especially you know, Wikibon's David Floyer has been beating on let's really look at databases, let's do this. NVME, is it an extension and kind of evolution or will this be a similar revolution to what we saw with flash? >> I think it's a similar revolution. It's a similar but perhaps less of a quantum leap, I would say. And the reason is because you're going from like 10s of milliseconds or milliseconds of latency with spinning media to sub millisecond with flash. Now you're going from sub millisecond to sub sub millisecond but you know, it's getting diminishing. I think where you're going to see a lot of dramatic is as it's more on the latency as you get as the applications get closer and closer to the servers. Right so I think you're going to see a lot of pretty dramatic change in that space. >> Speaking of change and revolution, the three vectors that you talked about, media, consumption models, this new wave of applications, how, ST to you are you seeing the buyers' journey change as a result of these vectors? >> So that's actually part two of the question that Stu was just asking is while I agree that it's going to be a revolution, what I've also seen in 20 years is that these things don't happen instantly, yes flash was a big change. But even today, over 40, 40, 50% of our revenue still comes from hybrid systems. Mixed flash and, so these things take time, right? So customers are taking leaps I would say I'm seeing a spread of the early adopters and, we're probably in the big medium, in the big, the bell curve right now and then there's some laggards as well that are still buying you know, pure HDD only systems. >> Do you see a difference there, sorry, with respect to industries, maybe healthcare or financial services that are early adopters? >> Definitely, I think, there's industries and there's also size of customer, right, the bigger the customer the more, eager we see they are in doing this digital transformation so we're seeing a lot of them going all in on software defined, right, so we're definitely seeing that shift from buying purpose build arrays to software defined. Now it's not going to be instantaneous, again it's going to be over many years, similarly in the mid range and below we're seeing a shift from, modular systems to hyper converged systems as well. So we're seeing that as well, we're seeing a lot of shift from purely on prem to a hybrid solution of on prem plus cloud, so all of our products are now attaching to the cloud as well. So we're definitely seeing all of these transitions. >> When it comes to the cloud native piece, there are some that have said well, it's kind of could be a kind of completely different way of doing things, really focused on the developers and won't that just live in the public cloud, or you know will SAS applications you know, be where a lot of those live, so you know what do you say to the, you've improved media, you've improved consumption models but, maybe they're just, it's easier for me not to own some of these pieces, one of the company, small companies, I don't want to deal with infrastructure at all, let me, you know, let me yeah-- >> Yeah that's another great, great question. What we are seeing I would say is definitely some of that. Especially as you said in the smaller companies it's easy for them to get started, right, with minimal initial expenses they can get started in the public cloud so we definitely see that. But as you get larger, what we're seeing is the economics of running everything in the cloud on a sustained basis, just don't work out, it's much more cost effective to run things on ground, so I think for cost reasons when you're running over a sustained operations as well as for security reasons, we're still seeing a lot of hesitation and especially as you get to the higher end of the market, people are concerned especially with all the breaches and things like that, that they're concerned about where their assets are. So we actually at Dell Technologies I would say, and Dell EMC in particular, we're seeing a pretty significant opportunity popping up where customers want to run on prem data centers just like the cloud. And that's where things like software defined storage become really important because hey, the public clouds are running all the software defined, that's their, one of the secrets to their agility and speed. Why can't we have that prem and we actually absolutely see that in fact today's announcement of PKS is right on the money for that. >> So we're here at VMWorld, with respect to that, seeing more customers want to bring things on prem maybe kind of the true private cloud that Wikibon's been talking about. What are you guys doing now with VM or to align that, we've heard a number of things about, yesterday with AWS you mentioned Pivotal today, Google, what's going on today with Dell EMC and WM Ware to help customers really build a solid on prem solution? >> Yeah so I think Pivotal is certainly a key piece of that, Pivotal, VM Ware, so the whole VM Ware cloud foundation, cloud suite is a key piece of that. The integration with PCF is actually going to be very key because what customers need, especially the traditional customers, if you will, who don't quite have the expertise yet to build cloud native applications, they need a platform, not just an infrastructure. So I think that's why Pivotal is very important. And we're working very closely with, as Dell EMC we're working closely with both of those partners in delivering those solutions, VX Rail is a good example of that. VX Rail, VX Rack are good examples of the two technologies coming together. And so those are the kinds of things, I think that's where software defined storage, you'll see a lot more integration between Dell EMC's software defined portfolio, with the VM Ware and Pivotal ecosystems. >> So the storage group you've talked about you have a lot of options, we've been talking about software defined storage, how that you know is driving a lot of the change there, gives a lot of flexibility there. How does the storage team look at things like VMAX and Extreme IO compared to the software defined storage these days? >> Yeah so I think we, I presume everybody's seen the famous chart where there's the traditional infrastructure and then there's the cloud native, the new world. And that's a transition that's going to happen and we think it's going to be a really long transition, right. Mainframes are not dead, right, so they're still alive. And there's a reason, because people are running their absolute mission critical application on those infrastructures so we think there's definitely going to be a place for both, and it isn't all or nothing. And that's, I think, going back to innovation, your question about it, where is Dell EMC innovating, we're the only company that's actually embracing these changes, this transition to software defined, right? Where with products like ECS and Scale IO and so on and so forth, so we see that the transitions will happen slowly but there's going to be a lot of opportunity for highly reliable, you know, six, seven, nines reliable infrastructure based on purpose built infrastructure. >> Yeah, it definitely matches a lot of as you said the true private cloud report that we have on Wikibon. >> Well thank you so much, Sadir, for joining us on The Cube, we now bring you into The Cube alumni, the illustrious Cube alumni category. >> Glad to be here. >> Lisa: And thank you for sharing your insights as CTO on what you're doing with customers and innovation. >> Sadir: Thank you very much. >> And we want to thank you for watching, I'm Lisa Martin. >> Announcer: Live from San Francisco, it's the Cube covering Spark Summit 2017, brought to you by databricks. >> Hi, we're back here where the Cube is live, and I didn't even know it Welcome, we're at Spark Summit 2017. Having so much fun talking to our guests I didn't know the camera was on. We are doing a talk with Cloudera, a couple of experts that we have here. First is Mark Grover, who's a software engineer and an author. He wrote the book, "Dupe Application Architectures." Mark, welcome to the show. >> Mark: Thank you very much. Glad to be here. And just to his left we also have Jennifer Wu, and Jennifer's director of product management at Cloudera. Did I get that right? >> That's right. I'm happy to be here, too. >> Alright, great to have you. Why don't we get started talking a little bit more about what Cloudera is maybe introducing new at the show? I saw a booth over here. Mark, do you want to get started? >> Mark: Yeah, there are two exciting things that we've launched at least recently. There Cloudera Altus, which is for transient work loads and being able to do ETL-Like workloads, and Jennifer will be happy to talk more about that. And then there's Cloudera data science workbench, which is this tool that allows folks to use data science at scale. So, get away from doing data science in silos on your personal laptops, and do it in a secure environment on cloud. >> Alright, well, let's jump into Data Science Workbench first. Tell me a little bit more about that, and you mentioned it's for exploratory data science. So give us a little more detail on what it does. >> Yeah, absolutely. So, there was private beta for Cloudera Data Science Workbench earlier in the year and then it was GA a few months ago. And it's like you said, an exploratory data science tool that brings data science to the masses within an enterprise. Previously people used to have, it was this dichotomy, right? As a data scientist, I want to have the latest and greatest tools. I want to use the latest version of Python, the latest notebook kernel, and I want to be able to use R and Python to be able to crunch this data and run my models in machine learning. However, on the other side of this dichotomy are the IT organization of the organization, where if they want to make sure that all tools are compliant and that your clusters are secure, and your data is not going into places that are not secured by state of the art security solutions, like Kerberos for example, right? And of course if the data scientists are putting the data on their laptops and taking the laptop around to wherever they go, that's not really a solution. So, that was one problem. And the other one was if you were to bring them all together in the same solution, data scientists have different requirements. One may want to use Python 2.6. Another one maybe want to use 3.2, right? And so Cloudera Data Science Workbench is a new product that allows data scientists to visualize and do machine learning through this very nice notebook-like interface, share their work with the rest of their colleagues in the organization, but also allows you to keep your clusters secure. So it allows you to run against a Kerberized cluster, allows single sign on to your web interface to Data Science Workbench, and provides a really nice developer experience in the sense that My workflow and my tools and my version of Python does not conflict with Jennifer's version of Python. We all have our own docker and Kubernetes-based infrastructure that makes sure that we use the packages that we need, and they don't interfere with each other. We're going to go to Jennifer on Altus in just a few minutes, but George first give you a chance to maybe dig in on Data Science workshop. >> Two questions on the data science side: some of the really toughest nuts to crack have been Sort of a common environment for the collaborators, but also the ability to operationalize the models once you've sort of agreed on them, and manage the lifecycle across teams, you know? Like, challenger champion, promote something, or even before that doing the ab testing, and then sort of what's in production is typically in a different language from what, you know, it was designed in and sort of integrating it with the apps. Where is that on the road map? Cause no one really has a good answer for that. >> Yeah, that's an excellent question. In general I think it's the problem to crack these days. How do you productionalize something that was written by a data scientist in a notebook-like system onto the production cluster, right? And I think the part where the data scientist works in a different language than the language that's in production, I think that problem, the best I can say right now is to actually have someone rewrite that. Have someone rewrite that in the language you're going to make in production, right? I don't see that to be the more common part. I think the more widespread problem is even when the language is production, how do you go making the part that the data scientist wrote, the model or whatever that would be, into a prodution cluster? And so, Data Science Workbench in particular runs on the same cluster that is being managed by Cloudera manager, right? So this is a tool that you install, but that is available to you as a web server, as a web interface, and so that allows you to move your development machine learning algorithms from your data science workbench to production much more easier, because it's all running on the same hardware and same systems. There's no separate Cloudera managers that you have to use to manage the workbench compared to your actual cluster. >> Okay. A tangential question, but one of the, the difficulties of doing machine learning is finding all the training data and, and sort of data science expertise to sit with the domain expert to, you know, figure out proper model of features, things like that. One of the things we've seen so far from the cloud vendors is they take their huge datasets in terms of voice, you know, images. They do the natural language understanding, speech or rather text to speech, you know, facial recognition. Cause they have such huge datasets they can train on. We're hearing noises that they'd going to take that down to the more mundane statistical kind of machine learning algorithms, so that you wouldn't be, like, here's a algorithm to do churn, you know, go to town, but that they might have something that's already kind of pre-populated that you would just customize. Is that something that you guys would tackle, too? >> I can't speak for the road map in that sense, but I think some of that problem needs to be tackled by projects like Spark for example. So I think as the stack matures, it's going to raise the level of abstraction as time goes on. And I think whatever benefits Spark ecosystem will have will come directly to distributions like Cloudera. >> George: That's interesting. >> Yeah >> Okay >> Alright, well let's go to Jennifer now and talk about Altus a little bit. Now you've been on the Cube show before, right? >> I have not. >> Okay, well, familiar with your work. Tell us again, you're the product manager for Altus. What does it do, and what was the motivation to build it? >> Yeah, we're really excited about Cloudera Altus. So, we released Cloudera Altus in its first GA form in April, and we launched Cloudera Altus in a public environment in Strata London about two weeks ago, so we're really excited about this and we are very excited to now open this up to all of the customer base. And what it is is a platform as a service offering designed to leverage, basically, the agility and the scale of cloud, and make a very easy to use type of experience to expose Cloudera capacity for, in particular for data engineering type of workloads. So the end user will be able to very easily, in a very agile manner, get data engineering capacity on Cloudera in the cloud, and they'll be able to do things like ETL and large scale data processing, productionized machine learning workflows in the cloud with this new data engineering as a service experience. And we wanted to abstract away the cloud, and cluster operations, and make the end user a really, the end user experience very easy. So, jobs and workloads as first class objects. You can do things like submit jobs, clone jobs, terminate jobs, troubleshoot jobs. We wanted to make this very, very easy for the data engineering end user. >> It does sound like you've sort of abstracted away a lot of the infrastructure that you would associate with on-prem, and sort of almost make it, like, programmable and invisible. But, um, I guess my, one of my questions is when you put it in a cloud environment, when you're on-prem you have a certain set of competitors which is kind of restrictive, because you are the standalone platform. But when you go on the cloud, someone might say, "I want to use red shift on Amazon," or Snowflake, you know, as the MPP sequel database at the end of a pipeline. And it's not just, I'm using those as examples. There's, you know, dozens, hundreds, thousands of other services to choose from. >> Yes. >> What happens to the integrity of that platform if someone carves off one piece? >> Right. So, interoperability and a unified data pipeline is very important to us, so we want to make sure that we can still service the entire data pipeline all the way from ingest and data processing to analytics. So our team has 24 different open source components that we deliver in the CDH distribution, and we have committers across the entire stack. We know the application, and we want to make sure that everything's interoperable, no matter how you deploy the cluster. So if you deploy data engineering clusters through Cloudera Altus, but you deployed Impala clusters for data marks in the cloud through Cloudera Director or through any other format, we want all these clusters to be interoperable, and we've taken great pains in order to make everything work together well. >> George: Okay. So how do Altus and Sata Science Workbench interoperate with Spark? Maybe start with >> You want to go first with Altus? >> Sure, so, we, in terms of interoperability we focus on things like making sure there are no data silos so that the data that you use for your entire data lake can be consumed by the different components in our system, the different compute engines and different tools, and so if you're processing data you can also look at this data and visualize this data through Data Science Workbench. So after you do data ingestion and data processing, you can use any of the other analytic tools and then, and this includes Data Science Workbench. >> Right, and for Data Science Workbench runs, for example, with the latest version of Spark you could pick, the currently latest released version of Spark, Spark 2.1, Spark 2.2 is being boarded of course, and that will soon be integrated after its release. For example you could use Data Science Workbench with your flavor of Spark two's version and you can run PySpark or Scala jobs on this notebook-like interface, be able to share your work, and because you're using Spark Underneath the hood it uses yarn for resource management, the Data Science Workbench itself uses Docker for configuration management, and Kubernetes for resource managing these Docker containers. >> What would be, if you had to describe sort of the edge conditions and the sweet spot of the application, I mean you talked about data engineering. One thing, we were talking to Matei Zaharia and Ronald Chin about was, and Ali Ghodsi as well was if you put Spark on a database, or at least a, you know, sophisticated storage manager, like Kudu, all of a sudden there're a whole new class of jobs or applications that open up. Have you guys thought about what that might look like in the future, and what new applications you would tackle? >> I think a lot of that benefit, for example, could be coming from the underlying storage engine. So let's take Spark on Kudu, for example. The inherent characteristics of Kudu today allow you to do updates without having to either deal with the complexity of something like Hbase, or the crappy performance of dealing HDFS compactions, right? So the sweet spot comes from Kudu's capabilities. Of course it doesn't support transactions or anything like that today, but imagine putting something like Spark and being able to use the machine learning libraries and, we have been limited so far in the machine learning algorithms that we have implemented in Spark by the storage system sometimes, and, for example new machine learning algorithms or the existing ones could rewritten to make use of the update features for example, in Kudu. >> And so, it sounds like it makes it, the machine learning pipeline might get richer, but I'm not hearing that, and maybe this isn't sort of in the near term sort of roadmap, the idea that you would build sort of operational apps that have these sophisticated analytics built in, you know, where the analytics, um, you've done the training but at run time, you know, the inferencing influences a transaction, influences a decision. Is that something that you would foresee? >> I think that's totally possible. Again, at the core of it is the part that now you have one storage system that can do scans really well, and it can also do random reads and writes any place, right? So as your, and so that allows applications which were previously siloed because one appication that ran off of HDFS, another application that ran out of Hbase, and then so you had to correlate them to just being one single application that can use to train and then also use their trained data to then make decisions on the new transactions that come in. >> So that's very much within the sort of scope of imagination, or scope. That's part of sort of the ultimate plan? >> Mark: I think it's definitely conceivable now, yeah. >> Okay. >> We're up against a hard break coming up in just a minute, so you each get a 30-second answer here, so it's the same question. You've been here for a day and a half now. What's the most surprising thing you've learned that you thing should be shared more broadly with the Spark community? Let's start with you. >> I think one of the great things that's happening in Spark today is people have been complaining about latency for a long time. So if you saw the keynote yesterday, you would see that Spark is making forays into reducing that latency. And if you are interested in Spark, using Spark, it's very exciting news. You should keep tabs on it. We hope to deliver lower latency as a community sooner. >> How long is one millisecond? (Mark laughs) >> Yeah, I'm largely focused on cloud infrastructure and I found here at the conference that, like, many many people are very much prepared to actually start taking more, you know, more POCs and more interest in cloud and the response in terms of all of this in Altus has been very encouraging. >> Great. Well, Jennifer, Mark, thank you so much for spending some time here on the Cube with us today. We're going to come by your booth and chat a little bit more later. It's some interesting stuff. okay welcome back day two of the cube here and Las Vegas for live this is looking angles exclusive coverage of Amazon Web Services reinvent I'm John furrier with Dave vellante co-host of the cube Dave we got our first segment here we're pleased to have Jerry chin new venture capitalist cloud guru was at VMware it's been in the enterprise for a while guys welcome welcome to the cube Jay to kick off here at amazon reinvent Jerry welcome back decided Amy thanks for having guys cube alumni how was Hong Kong you just back from I'm stack I think Hong Kong was great my my body and time clocks someplace our Pacific though so I don't know them jet lag but thank God in Vegas I never need to leave the building so I don't need to know what time is on my mom actually in so it's good to be here so Amazon's pushing the cloud hard obviously they are the cloud huge market share on infrastructure as a service check the boxes there they got like thirty six percent by are not I think it's much higher than that actually her but jesse was saying today well I mean by vechs the next 14 it's got to be higher than thirty six percent I think it's closer to seven but ok that's infrastructure service but the actions platform as a service and SAS yeah if you can I got to get your take on guys we're following OpenStack you were just in Hong Kong you got amazon public cloud you get OpenStack coming up you know as that horse those a two-horse race right now clouds Dax out there but really it's OpenStack is like the enterprise hope it's the great hope for the enterprise with Amazon kind of rolling rolling out massive services what's your take on the two and and and is it a two-horse race and what's what's what's the what's the difference between the two you know I don't think it's a it's a two horse race yet but Amazon is quickly becoming the marker soph monopoly of the public cloud at the rate they're going and and it there have the size and scale that pretty soon to be really hard to compete and I think only google and maybe Marcus off and the public cloud space can really compete but if you take a step back and look at you know to your question OpenStack versus amazon I was in Hong Kong last week the OpenStack design summit and openstax philosophies one be all things to all people right it's open source multiple projects Amazon's philosophy is they want to be one cloud all people so you saw their announcements today around enterprise use cases desktop use cases startup use cases me to use cases there won't be one cloud to all people so it is not the race isn't over yet but very different philosophies right now between the two different cams was there much to talk about incorporating amazon api's into the whole OpenStack framework you know six months ago you heard a lot about that we had a crowd chatter on that run what was the the buzz there you know I I'll be honest into to the point that you guys brought up early around the Amazon ap is almost are becoming a lingua franca for infrastructure of a service but quite frankly debating whatnot they're the right api's or not isn't I think where the actions and the actions add to the point you made around pass and other developer services so the actual API so you do the api's right should be pretty easy for developers to adopt you just create really great developer service around it database services storage services security services those are what developers really care about so I feel like we have you know sometimes called cloud plus there are infrastructure service plus and you got sass minus you know it's like what you have with Salesforce do you feel like we really need that pass layer does that just sort of bifurcate into one of those two there's there's a there's a school of thought that says the world goes into two worlds a long telus a sax so there's an app for everything in which case you have SAS or SATA minus and then you know infrastructure private cloud for a budget likes the apps there's no middle ground for pass you know I'm more towards the middle ground because in a world where we have multiple SAS providers in multiple clouds I believe you're going to have multiple SAS multiple clouds you're going to need to integrate and stitch together a mash-up of applications right you have work day for HCM Salesforce for crm applications your own custom website running on amazon there are three different kinds now servers now how are you connect the data are going to move data around there's going to be at least some kind of past layer integration layer or cloud layer that needs to help stitch together this multi-cloud world so you like the pivotal play a pill I think the concept Indian concept right I think Paul is is a pulse of visionary and bus my friends to work there their announcement yes sir was was I think a step in the right direction that they're planning a flag saying that there has to be something beyond amazon there has to be a relevant private cloud initiative be it VMware or OpenStack of someplace else and let's create some services around it and the angle are taking around data and data services i think is proud of the right the right bed because all these new applications will need these data services to be relevant we were talking about pivotal yesterday one of the things that we were critical on and but also hopeful as you pointed out it's early right so true pivotal a mulligan or a pass if you will is this early and it's really a new company if you think about a 1,600 employees but new but it's window dressing announcement it really wasn't really i mean so the same logos i mean come on that they're trying to overhype and that's that was that's what people are talking about saying hey guys just be honest and say we're working as fast as i can because amazon is not going to break the enterprise right away I mean they also have a longer road going hard at the enterprise so they are going after IBM we must saw in the keynote that called out IBM specifically around some of the advertising there on the show yeah so Amazon is clearly trying to knock on the door or the enterprise so the question we are asking and talking about is how much time is it till they proliferate the enterprise I mean they're in there now toe in the water little beachhead still not enterprise-ready in the ends of the SLA s and the demands or does it matter so what's your take how much time is really on the radar for Amazon when will the clock be expiring for the IBM's HP pivotal's in terms of retooling so I think the evolution around enterprise public cloud like Amazon would take three potential paths so path one around amazon amazon invests enough engineering and product talent to make their cloud enterprise friendly privacy security reliability and they're they're hiring a bunch of folks a bunch of folks my old place vmware try to do that that's path one path to is you see a category of startups out there trying to meet amazon more cloud and enterprise friendly security privacy reliability right so that's path to and as a Greylock a venture capitalist we're investing a bunch of companies trying to you make that happen or past three is developers out there I'm engineer around the weaknesses amazon so the new Amazon is an enterprise friendly they know and about Amazon's got a bunch of weakness around security and privacy and he's just right there application around those weaknesses so I think those are the three evolutionary path paths I think it's a race to see who wins right one two or three yeah there's no doubt that Amazon is forcing the hand of the big guys he's seeing that clearly we have a question on our crowd check go to crowd chatting at / reinvent we've got a live live crowd-sourced thought leader chat there all those to Twitter and LinkedIn pendulum will you sign in but the question Jerry to you is how our cloud providers catering to provide low latency access to developing markets like India Indonesia Philippines etc you know given that the Hurricanes just destroyed all the infrastructure considering there's huge potential explosive internet growth so given that those new emerging markets are essentially refreshing their infrastructure what is the the cloud providers take on the end you do you work in that area what you're giving the opinion on what's going on in those areas sure I mean I think that the world is looking at two or three different clouds you say there's a u.s. dominated cloud maybe a China dominate cloud and rest of the world right generally a lot of analyst kind of segment the world in three major pockets when you think about developing markets or other geographies like Asia South Asia or South America huge markets lot of developers all applications it's the reason why I think there's only a handful of providers that can have the scoop in the reeds to reach globally I think Equinix Rackspace on Google Marcus off or all global footprint players everyone else I think you're going to look at a Federation of multiple players so every region has a local telco cloud provider it could be like an entity or rakuten in Japan it could be a sink tell in Singapore South East Asia so I think you're going to see a global brand around like Amazon or or VMware and VMware trying to franchise our own cloud or Microsoft and then I would see partnerships working between the different geographies and maybe OpenStack is that partnership maybe amazon API is the way different class communicate its remains to be seen what that interface between the different gos look like in the future what do you see as IBM's role I mean first of all do they have the global scale are you sort of purposefully leaving them out or just forget about them and just don't feel like they can compete on that global scale what do you see is their role in OpenStack so um bunch of questions there IBM didn't mean to leave them out there are definitely relevant especially for the large enterprises so I think you're seeing enterprise adoption come from large startups or small starts growing up in the cloud as well as large enterprises that are looking to modernize your applications and I think IBM has a great role to play from kind of that top-down approach I think IBM between a combination of a soft layers which is their their acquired cloud provider combined with their global services and their consulting business will be really relevant to large enterprises my mind so talk about the Amazon enterprise marchi obviously they're talking about cloud trails which is kind of like a monitoring service compliance oriented and I'll see vbi so you you've been close to the vdi movement so that's those are I started VDI hearted the beady eye movement so you know being there what is your take on that because that's very enterprising and that's rude good for business I'm what sir what's their chances there well I think so first on the vdi market we started that at VMware at 05 06 we coined the term VDI and I think it's a great service for large enterprises than need secure mass desktops I think I would love to see in a VDI service from VMware in Amazon five six seven years ago because now video i think is part of a larger solution it's it's it's significant but not enough right he's now enterprise to care about their madness desktops like VDI but my ipad devices iOS devices Android devices they really want kind of a holistically managed desktop or workspace environment so if i were amazon i would expand beyond windows and two other you know operating systems to manage like android and iOS but that's other serious about you know managing enterprise workspaces do they have do they have advantage and you're in your opinion despite the fact that they're so late to market do they have an advantage in that and I mean in essence they are starting around mobile developers aren't they whereas when you started that was especially a consideration Wright and Citrix sort of found its way there right but I think between um amazon I think Google's in a great position because they own so much of the Android stack right if they want to create an enterprise friendly manage um Android environment for Chromebooks Android devices they can start creating a bunch of great developer services like magic google drive but secured on on kind of a google cloud or something like that that could be pretty compelling I don't know if they're going there i think dropbox has a great opportunity kind of be that back and platform obviously Greylock investment but dropbox has a huge opportunity to be that kind of manage secure servers across mobile devices and desktop devices it's all a sudden the one overarching fact you have between Windows iOS and Android is your data and drop boxes on all three platforms chair we got to get rolling and we got in our next guest but I want to ask you actually talk about what you're investing in at greylock rate locked here 1dc you guys have done amazing deals I mean just recently in the past decade Greylock has emerged from just a tier 1 BC to a mega success good investments and if you're on the enterprise team they're actually the consumer side kick ass what's going on for you guys what are you investing in what are you looking at and if price is not an easy game to invest in obviously it's hard but what are you guys doing what are you investing what are you looking for I'm thinking about looking at across the categories most relevant for this audience is I'm really interested looking at startups that can either a make amazon a more enterprise funding cloud or be startups that will pose alternative or challenge to amazon in the enterprise cloud space and you do that either by you know focus on enterprise requirements or focus on enterprise services like data storage security that matter enterprises focus on doing that really really well better than vmware better than Microsoft there in the Amazon I think in the build a really big enterprise cloud business around those technology services you're essentially betting on that transformation from the way the world is the cloud is post of the world known as buying servers they're all trying to find a lab partner that's the direction and and are you bullish on this integrated stack offering obviously DevOps has been a big success you see Facebook you see Google you see Amazon building their own gear they were kind of saying we're not playing an open compute but sure that aside DevOps is a software model absolutely and so the integrated stack which are common on integrated stack and how that's going to involve for both the mainstream of DevOps absolutely so you see this DevOps culture permeating first development of applications now how you manage your infrastructure so you look at what's happened with open compute and open source switches which I think open compute project announced a couple days ago you're seeing that kind of DevOps culture and how they manage and update their applications / minate storage compute and now networking that's going to be kind of a common adoption curve throughout the cloud so the way DevOps technologies are getting adopted from languages to frameworks of databases is the same way we're seeing storage compute and networking technologies get adopted in this next cloud wave what's your take on the iphone for the enterprise amazon cloud kind of metaphor and OpenStack being more the Android we were talking earlier right just get your thoughts there an OpenStack also has a lot of legs right now but it's very open iPhone model or Amazon is kind of closed or some say lock in alright but it still apps are not closed right so the metaphor the metaphor was you know iphone is to Amazon as Android is to OpenStack and I think at a high level that kind of makes sense but not really because there's no Google behind OpenStack like there's a google behind Android so I think Rackspace is was an early leader and still as a leader in the OpenStack space but there's also red hat there's a bunch of the players there so as a result there's no single entity kind of driving OpenStack like Google's driving Android so that analogy can breaks down and then as far as Apple analogy to Amazon I I think Amazon is a lot more open than the iOS ecosystem is because just the fact that there's no governing board to prove her apps to launch on amazon right I can go stand up on an ec2 instance lost my application use it I don't need wait for this there's not a 20-page approval process so knowingly directionally that's more correct than not but it's analogy breaks down when you really get into it and OpenStack your prospects roman sec what's your what's your outlook on OpenStack real quick I think OpenStack so holistically i think is great a more bullets than sort of sub projects that i am overall I think they keep launching new projects some are better than others the core processing around compute and storage and this um API management I'm bullish on I'm supposed to be bullish on what they're doing around containers like docker and core OS and kind of adopting this next generation of cloud platforms well we got to go we got some fans out there want to hear what your take on VDI so go tweet to at jerry chen j ER
