I am Lisa Martin, sitting here in Bellevue, Washington with a couple of Smart Sheeters. Next to me is Ben Canning, the VP of Product Management. >> Hey Ben. >> Hey. >> And Ignacio Martinez, the VP of Security, Risk and Compliance. Guys, thank you so much for carving out time in a very packed event agenda to come and chat with us on theCUBE. >> Happy to be here. >> Happy to be here. >> So, this is a really interesting event, couple of things that really stood out to me, this morning in the key note, as I was telling you, we cover a lot of events here on theCUBE, of all sizes, and it was really interesting how your CEO Mark Mader, who was on the program earlier this morning, went out into the audience and talked about ENGAGED in action. I thought that was fantastic. And asked customers, randomly, three customers I think, how are you being empowered by Smartsheet? And how these customers were able to get up and articulately talk about the value that Smartsheet is delivering to their business. I thought that customer connection was really quite memorable. And then additionally, product management, when Jean Thoreau came out, and to a round of applause, a number of times, during announcements of the enhancements and features and what that really. >> Multi assign too. >> Yes, what that really, sort of, said to me, is you guys deliver software that is a facilitator of collaboration that is essential to drive businesses, digital transformation, et cetera, but you're collaborating with them because clearly they were very happy to hear about a number of these announcements today. >> Yeah we have very, very passionate customers and it's one of the great things about working here and working with these customers. We're super focused on what do those customers need and how do we enable them to get those things done. We don't typically get imposed from the top down by IT. You're using Smartsheet because you chose to use it. It's the thing that makes your life easier. And we never forget that and we never forget that we need to keep that close connection with our customers and I think you see it here, at the conference today. >> You do, you got 50 customers plus speaking in breakout sessions, which for an event that's got about 2000 people, it's huge percentage. >> Yeah. >> Some great announcements. Before we get into some of the risk and compliance stuff Ignacio, Ben walk us through maybe a high level of some of the key enhancements that were announced this morning. >> Well, so we talked about a lot of things today. I think we had over 23 total announcements. Things from the range of multiple, being able to sign multiple people in the grid, to Dynamic View, which we're incredibly excited about, that allows you to have custom views on a sheet and control who gets access to which view. Really opens up tremendous new possibilities for Smartsheet. Some of the things that I get super excited about, I work a lot in the platform and administrative space. We've announced a number of things this week that are all about helping IT administrators and system admins, manage Smartsheet much more effectively when it gets to large scale. And I'll highlight a couple of them. One is the directory integration capability that we've done. We hear a lot from our customers that managing individual Smartsheet users gets kind of hard once you get over a number and I want to be able to see all the people in my organization and be able to share with them and assign tasks with them, even if they're not yet Smartsheet users. So what we announced today was a way to integrate active directory with Smartsheet so that the company directory of all the users in the company is automatically synchronized into Smartsheet so that those users can be, you can assign things to them, you can @ mention them, they'll show up in the grid with their faces and all their departmental information. It makes it much easier to manage users inside your organization. So when 100 people join the team, they automatically show up in Smartsheet. When someone leaves the organization, they get de-provisioned. And it makes it much easier to collaborate with folks throughout your organization than it ever has been before. So we're really excited to announce that as a product for our enterprise customers, starting a little bit later this year. >> Excellent. You've got customers, I was reading, doing my prep for the show, over 75,000 customers in 190 countries, of all industries. >> Yes. And I imagine, some of the things that we've heard guys from your customers on the program today that they're really benefiting from are the visibility, the configurability of the technology, the ability to have accountability, to not only improve workforce productivity, but to be able to eliminate duplicate tasks, give project owners and initiative owners full visibility, whereas they did not have that full visibility before. Ignacio, another big announcement that came out today, was what you guys are doing in the federal space. So tell us a little bit about FedRAMP, what that is and how you are working with them. >> Sure so without boring you to death on FedRAMP, I'll give you a quick overview. FedRAMP is a requirement of the federal government. It's a program developed by the government to essentially certify or authorize cloud service providers like Smartsheet to be meeting a certain security level of compliance, to be deployed in the federal agency space. So the federal government, every agency, is required to abide by it. So they should be selecting providers that have gone through FedRAMP authorization. So it is essentially security compliance program that companies voluntarily put themselves through to enable themselves to do work in the federal space. And very happy to announce, this morning, that we were not only announcing our intent to develop a program and a product to enter the federal space, to have been selected by the FedRAMP program to go through what they call FedRAMP Connect. That's an accelerated process where the FedRAMP office selects cloud service providers that they feel, based on application, have a high level of demand in the federal agency space. So they select those providers and work very closely with us to go through that compliance exercise and get authorized to be FedRAMP authorized in the FedRAMP program. So the reason the government does that is they have a strong desire to get products like Smartsheet deployed quickly among the federal agencies, because those people, think of them as an enterprise, they want all those great features that Ben talked about that we bring to enterprises in the public sector, they want them in the government agency sector as well. So we are very pleased that we were selected to go through this program and get a product to the market place in the federal space to help them improve how they work as well. >> So this isn't an entry into federal, 'cause Smartsheet has great presence and traction in federal, NASA, the National Institutes of Health and Veterans Administration. I also saw from your website, you've got customers using Smartsheet in city governments and state governments but this FedRAMP Connect Program, you mentioned it as an accelerator, but I think I heard you say that this was from demand from users, so this is that validation coming from the best place it can, right? >> Yeah it's essentially demand in the federal market place. So we're going to go through on an accelerated basis and what that does, you're right, we are currently deployed in a large number of federal agencies, state and local government, but in those cases, we'll get deployed on a limited basis, because we don't have FedRAMP authorization and they will be careful about where we're deployed. Achieving FedRAMP authorizations gives those federal government agency CIOs and CISOs the ability to say, Smartsheet can be deployed agency wide because it's now authorized under the FedRAMP Program. >> So let's talk about that from a product, maybe innovation standpoint. One of the things that's very clear from today, is how collaborative Smartsheet is with its customers and how influential they are in product innovation. From a federal perspective, you mentioned, Ignacio, that a lot of times they have the same requirements as enterprises and other organizations in the private sector, but how are you guys working together? Are there tweaks and enhancements that you need to make to the technology as part of the FedRAMP Connect Program? >> Yeah for sure. So one of the, FedRAMP institutes a very strict regime of compliance, audit, security controls, onto the product. And it ensures that we're really operating at the highest level of rigor and delivering a service that is highly reliable, highly scalable, fully audited and secure. So that requires us to invest in all of those areas. And the nice thing about FedRAMP, for even the non-federal customers, is that we make those investments consistently across the service. So while FedRAMP is an isolated instance of Smartsheet, all of Smartsheet can take advantage of the practices and procedures. We don't want to have to do things two different ways for two different parts of the service, so we impose a lot of those same practices and procedures and hardening of the service, across the board. And so that helps us to meet our promise to our customers that are not federal customers, that we're delivering a true enterprise grade fully scaled and reliable solution that they can depend on. >> And the flip side is true. Everything that Ben's team is working on, as you said, the customers cheer when we announce something, it was on our roadmap because they wanted it. So our federal customers, they would want and desire the same things that Ben's team has been developing, automation, any of those tools, because they want to work efficiently and effectively and collaborate the same way all of the private sectors do. >> Exactly. >> Yeah that's right. I mean you saw that this morning, in the keynote, right, where we heard from the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This is a federal agency that's using the power of Smartsheet to build a solution in mere days, rather than having to outsource it or wait for a large scale IT spend and RFP and all of those things. We're empowering these agencies to build solutions. The people on the ground are able to put together a solution that is really saving people's lives. >> That, exactly, Hurricane Florence that just hit, that's a life and death situation. >> Yeah and it was breathtaking and sort of moment of pride to see how quickly they were able to put that together and that's the power of Smartsheet. So we're really excited to bring that to the rest of the federal government. We see a tremendous amount of desire from them for that. >> So Ignacio, in terms of the FedRAMP Connect Program, you mentioned it's going to allow an acceleration of this process. What would it normally take if you weren't part of this Connect Program? I'm just curious how much advantage you'll get but you'll be able to pass through to your federal and non-federal customers. >> Yeah so very good point, good question. The statistics you often see thrown around about companies, cloud service providers, that want to get a product into the FedRAMP authorization space, is they'll spend on average a couple years, two years, and a million plus dollars. So it's not a small task to get FedRAMP authorized. Being part of that FedRAMP Connect accelerated program, we're working with what's called the JAB, the Joint Advisory Board, so the top three CIOs of the FedRAMP Program, they work along side us if we're wiling to invest the time and the dollars to take our product through to do it on this accelerated basis. So it is literally a joint effort, hand in hand, working with the FedRAMP office, the auditors we use for it, and our people to demonstrate that we've got the enterprise great security and that we can meet the ongoing monitoring submissions that have to be done. >> So the cost avoidance of a million dollars from two years, what are you expecting? And if you can't share that, that's okay, I'm just curious, is it going to be six months, a year? >> Well if you look at the FedRAMP Connect Program, on average, it runs approximately six months. So it's back and forth. It's a three way collaboration between the cloud service provider, the FedRAMP office and the auditors, but that program, their goal is to get it into approximately a six month timeline. So we were announced last week, so I think we said, our goal is to work with them on that timeline and early in calendar year 2019, is the timeline end that we all have on our radar. >> That's like Back to the Future acceleration, no wonder you're excited about that. >> We are and we're going to try to go faster than that, if we can manage it on the product side, but we'll see how quickly it goes. >> Well that's one of the things, that not only is that validation from the users within the federal government that they want this. But Ben, as you were saying we're not developing things in isolation or certain features for this market and this market can't use it, this is all going to be accelerating, I imagine, what Smartsheet is innovating to deliver to all segments globally. >> Yeah I think that's right. We see an increasing need for manageability and security capabilities within the platform. And our customers are asking for this across the board. Great example, another feature we announced today, is what we call the event monitoring service. So enterprise IT wants to understand who is doing what on the system. They want to be able to impose business rules, make sure that highly confidential information isn't being shared inappropriately. So we've invested in a system that we announced today that basically keeps track of all events that happen within the system, anything that's shared, new documents that are created and so forth, and gives the IT administrator a way to track that feed and make business decisions on the basis of it. Integrating with other CASB Solutions to drive business rules. So for example, we have customers that are using this system today to keep track of all of the attachments that are being added into their environment. When they see an attachment being added, they're able to go and look at that attachment and make sure that if it's a highly confidential thing, and that it's shared with an inappropriate set of folks, then they can take business action automatically to manage that environment. And that's the kind of security and audit control that enterprises need in order to feel comfortable deploying Smartsheet at wide scale. So we're very excited to be able to offer that to those enterprise administrators and help them foster Smartsheet adoption in the company. >> So some of the things that we've talked about today are this is technology that was designed for the business user, I've used it. I think I read a quote from Mark Mader that may have been from the press release for the IPO a few months ago, that said, in the beginning in the early days, 12 years ago, there were critics that said, why are you guys building this on a spreadsheet construct, and his answer and Smartsheet's answer, at a very small company, at that time, was 500 million people are familiar with this, so building something for business users, lines of business, finance, IT, sales, for example, tools that I as a marketing person don't need to be an IT expert. I don't need to even know what an API is or what it stands for, right. But you're also now, as you were saying, some of the new enhancements to facilitate IT, so what's that, kind of, yin and yang with designing a tool that is for the average user and ensuring that the IT folks who weren't probably involved in the first place, are able to manage this successfully? >> Yeah well it's definitely a balance that we have to maintain. We can never lose sight of the fact that the end user is at the center of what we do. And that we have to design for solutions that end users can implement themselves and that's at the heart of what Smartsheet does. At the same time, we look at IT administrators as partners. We know that the users love what the product does. They're desperate for it. And in general, I find that IT administrators are not trying to get in the way of what their users want. They want to be the hero and they want to be able to say, yes. So part of my job is to make sure that I give them the tools to enable them to get to a yes. That I can show them that we are secure enough, reliable enough and scalable enough, that we meet their strategic enterprise needs, that we integrate with the other systems that they have so that they're not building an island that they're going to have to deal with and doesn't connect with the rest of their estate and that they've got the tools to manage at scale, so that I'm not asking them to go one by one adding a thousand users, that's just not nice and fair. So I think we keep the end user, the business user, at the center and we look at IT as a partner and we try to find ways to help them get to yes with the product. And I don't think those two things are really in conflict. >> It's interesting, dealing with CIOs of our customers, they'll tell you, it's very strange, and it goes back to what you said earlier, value. So CIOs are tasked with delivering the most value for their organization, doing more for less, efficiently. And that often means selection of tools that then they have to go and force into an organization and deal with users that might be less than happy. I've had CIOs tell me on the phone, I have people putting together petitions to make Smartsheet the tool that we use across the organization. And so he said, that makes my life easy. I just need to work with you guys to make sure you've got the security, you've got all the tools I need as a CIO to protect the enterprise, but I don't have to worry about user acceptance. That's unique spot and we love it when the CIOs say, this makes my life easier with everything we're doing with Smartsheet. >> Oh that's music to your ears. >> Yeah it totally is. I mean, I met with a tech CIO recently as part of our enlist, talking to him about, oh well are you going to come to ENGAGE? And oh well you know, we're busy and we don't have a thing, and I said, oh you know actually there's eight people from your company, business users that are attending. >> Nice. That are attending the conference on their own dime and you can see the light bulb go off in his eyes and he's like, okay if eight people from our business groups are paying their own money to go to a tech conference, that's something I need to be paying attention to. How can you help me get my arms wrapped around this and help our users so it's a nice position to be in. >> It absolutely is. Well congratulations on being in the FedRAMP Connect Program and we're excited to hear next year all the great things coming out of that. Covering, Imagine: A Better World, a global education conference, sponsored by Amazon Web Services. >> Hey welcome back everybody. Jeff Rick here with theCUBE. We're in Downtown Seattle Washington at the AWS Imagine Education Conference. First one they've ever done about 900 registrants. People from over 20 countries are here. Theresa Carlson gave the kickoff and it's a pretty exciting event. We've seen this movie before with Amazon. They get involved in a project, and it grows and grows and grows. So this is all about education. It's about education institutions. It's about students obviously, which are the core of education, and we're really excited to have our next guest. It was a big announcement that happened today. He's Marvin Martinez, the President of East Los Angeles College. Marvin great to see you. >> Thank you, pleasure to be here. >> So you're getting ready to go up on stage. it's a big announcement so tell about what it is. It's called the California Cloud... >> Computing. >> Computing Initiative. >> So this is what we've done. We've been developing for the last year a certificate where students can take a number of classes, which is basically a total of 15 units, and they're able to earn at the end of 15 units, a certificate in cloud computing. And the goal is to get them trained quickly to get them out to work quickly. Eventually we hope that the certificate evolves into a degree program, so then we're hoping that the students come back and they get their associate of our certificate and they're able to get even a better job, which is really the goal of this program is we want to get them started, want to get them excited, get them into an entry-level type of job, then they will know they like it. They're going to come back. They'll get that degree, you know do even better right. >> So let me, I just want to make sure I get this. This is a California Cloud Workforce Project. So it's really about the workforce and giving these kids the skills. So it's funny though Marvin where everybody says technology is taking away jobs. They forget yeah they take away some jobs, but there's new jobs created. >> All the time. >> All the time, there's a ton of openings especially in the engineering field and in the cloud, but so what are some of the cloud skills specifically that that kids are taking to get the certificate? >> Well you know the skills they're taking specifically so they could eventually work with some of the major industries in our area. Obviously from Amazon and other similar industries and similar businesses, and there's many of them. Los Angeles you know quickly is becoming the new Silicon Valley. So a lot of industries are moving. They call us all the time, they call me all the time, and say that you have trained students. We will hire them right now and we'll pay them a good salary. So no doubt it's a motivation for us because that's who we are as community colleges. We are here to serve students. We are here to get them trained, get them up there quickly and respond to the needs of industry, that area. >> So it's a really interesting planning that it's the community colleges that you guys have all come together. I think the number's 19 as part of this. So A, you know that you're doing it as a unified effort. So kids at a broad area can take advantage, and also you're also partnering with individual high schools. Each Community College is partners with an individual high school. So how does that work? How does that kind of come into fruition? >> Well you know, one thing that we want to do is that as we work with high schools, high schools today are also under pressure to ensure that their students are being trained well and that if they just get a high school diploma they can go and work somewhere. But also today high schools are getting smart. They're saying hey how do we work with a local college so that when students graduate, they graduate with a high school diploma and a degree from a college. So and why are they doing that because they know in order to be competitive, a young person needs to have these degrees. Today if you want to be competitive a high school diploma may not be enough. So we notice that motivation there. Secondly we're able to get students on a college campus, get them developed get them, they're mature, get them to take a college-level course and then they're able to go out and obviously and work once they complete this program. So the relationship is a natural one. It's one that high schools are seeking from us, which is great. That has not been the case all the time. Usually we've gone to them, but now they're coming to us and saying we need you help us out. >> The part I like about it too is the kids are smart. And they're like why am I taking philosophy? How am I going to use philosophy in my job, that or why am I taking this or why am I taking that? These are really concrete skills that A, they can go look in the newspaper today or I guess I don't know if they look in newspaper for jobs because couldn't find a newspaper if you threw it at them, but they could go seek the job listings at the Amazon sites and also they are working with this technology, they live in this technology, so it's not something foreign or something new. It's something they experience every day. So it's got to be a pretty easy sell I would imagine. >> It's an easy sell. Young people today are different than the way that we grew up. I grew up at a time where there were no cell phones, there was no bottled water. It was a whole different time. Young people today as you're seeing grow up with these technologies. It's part of the who they are. They more than just embraced it. So they welcome to use it in any way they can. So when we propose programs like these, guess what happens? They enroll en masse and that's because they understand it. They identify with it. Will they be willing to enroll in a Shakespeare class? They might but not as much as a class like this one. So no doubt the population today has changed, so part of my job is to introduce programs on the campus that I know will generate that kind of enrollment and interest. So we know that a program like this will do that and we just need to recognize the fact that the world has changed. Let me just add that we don't do that world's education institutions. As institutions we're some of the most conservative institutions in the history of this country. So for us to change it takes quite a lot. So what's forcing us to change, what was forcing us to change is that enrollment is down and not just in many of our colleges in LA but throughout the country. Enrollment is-- >> In Community colleges generally or colleges in general? Community colleges. >> Community colleges throughout the nation enrollment is down. And enrollment is down for a number of reasons. There's more jobs out there, so students are looking to go out and work, but also enrollment is down because of the curriculum and the courses that we have are just not interesting to them. So I think a program like this will help the campus. A program like this will get more students to come and take advantage of an incredible education that they can get at our campuses. >> I was just curious kind of what were the drivers of enrollment before that have kind of fallen away? Was it a particular type of skill set? Was it just that they don't want it generic anymore? They got to go get a job? I'm just curious if there was something that you had before that was appealing that you have now that's just not appealing anymore? >> Good questions. So the last time our economy was in bad shape when the employment was down. That was back around 2008-2009. Well guess what happened in our campuses? Enrollment was up. So when the economy is in bad shape people come back to school. When the economy is in great shape like it is today where there is a lot of jobs, enrollment is down. So we don't see the economy going down at all in a number of years. >> Anytime soon. >> So we have to develop programs that we think will be of interest to students first. Secondly we have to respond to the needs of the new economy. The new economy is now being dominated by these new technologies. We know about it, young people know about it. So when we develop a program like this and we know that it will generate interest. It will generate enrollment. And in many ways that's what drives the funding for a college. We're funded on the basis of how many people we enroll. So if we don't enroll a lot people, we have less money, so no doubt there's a motivation for us, a motivation for the entire system, to really partner with Amazon. And figure out a way for us to really get students train and to get them, hopefully get them a good job. >> So you segued perfectly. My last question was going to be kind of the role of Amazon in AWS, in terms of being a partner. I mean they obviously you know are thinking about things. Theresa's fantastic. She just talked about being from an education family, but at the same time you know they have their own reasons to do it. They need workers right? They need people to fill these jobs to fulfill Amazon's own growth beyond their ecosystem, their partners and customers etcetera. So what does it mean for you as an educator and part of this consortium of community colleges to have somebody like AWS come in and really help you codevelop and drive these types of new programs? >> Well it means everything. Number one we know that Amazon is a major employer. We know that the jobs that they have available are good-paying jobs. They have a career path and so we know it's a good direction for young people to take. So part of my job as an educator is many ways it's like a parent. You want to take care of your family, you want to take care of the kids and put them in the right path so they have the most success possible. Amazon offers that kind of path. So for us to partner with someone like Amazon is great. Secondly, students know who Amazon is. I don't have to sell them. They know who they are, and they know what Amazon can do and they know that it's a great career path for them. coverage and we're here day one for us at Cisco live Barcelona even though we did a little preview game preview yesterday my good friend kena Reilly is here he's the director of customer experience at Cisco and he's joined by Kyle winters Technical Marketing engineer for the customer experience technology and transformation group it's six to go guys great to see you thanks for coming on and you know we love talking customer experience Cisco is a it's a big company big portfolio and a lot of complexity for clients and so bring it all together and customer experience is very important can't we have it a conversation with Alastair early today and he was talking about Cisco's commitment from the top chuck Robbins on down to really improve that customer experience bring essentially a digital virtual experience to your customers and you guys obviously fit into that right absolutely so about two years ago when Chuck brought in Maria Martinez that was the first step into really pushing Cisco to focus more on successful outcomes for customers so we had already always sold that way but with the complexity of technology and how fast technology is moving accelerating value realization for customers has never been bigger especially in the security space because as we've talked before you know with everything that goes on today and the fact that the bad guys are trying to get data faster quicker and different getting the technology in play operational and production it has never been more important and we're gonna dig in with Kyle with some detail and double click into the lifecycle specifically and the different points of that journey but that's really important for any customer experience is really understanding that lifecycle that maturity model can you talk about that a little bit yeah so so with us you know we've been at it for about six years when we started as Lancope so we've got a great model and you know our approach to getting outcomes for customers is completely in line with with the strategy of our products and technologies and all security so it's really important that you align with that strategy because salespeople sell and they sell you the what we sell the how we're gonna get you and so you have to understand what it is that customers need and how that technology maps because you don't want a shelf where and you don't want products or technology sitting there waiting to be implemented because you know these days especially with the move to the cloud it's got to get up and running you know within an hour so our model has always been that way we built our model with customer first and so we are you know we are the security experts we're the trusted security adviser so when we go in and work with customers we completely know exactly those outcomes that they need and with all the sort of technologies and products that we have not only with stealthWatch but the other products that sent ulema tree to us we have in Kyle will talk about how our service is completely aligned with those outcomes and the journeys that we will take our customers on yes a faster adoption means faster time to value obviously let's focus in on stealthWatch Kenneth you came in with the stealthWatch acquisitions been very successful I mean Cisco security business grew 22% last quarter we'll talk more about the sort of umbrella but let's drill in with Kyle to stealthWatch services specifically maybe you could sort of take us through you know at a high level what what the areas are and then we can sort of follow up on yeah yes so so our customer maturity model when it comes to services there's kind of three different stages to it it starts with the visibility stage so we have services around being able to deploy an operational I stealthWatch will bring in our best practices and help customers get up to speed and using the system quickly and efficiently from there we also have services around detection capabilities so being able to use automation and integrations to further the detection capabilities of stealthWatch things like being able to classify host groups through automation from source like IP address management systems things like asset discovering classification service that helped drive segmentation efforts all of these things help improve the behavioral algorithms and processes that stealthWatch is using to detect these threats in real time and then from there we have an integration stage as well - which is all about bridging the gap between stealthWatch and the rest of not only Cisco's portfolio but the entirety of our customer security portfolio as well and some of those services include things like sim integrations being able to integrate stealthWatch with Splunk we have services such as our proxy integration service as well a lot of different types of services that we're able to help get our customers to the next stage with their stealth watch environments I got a lot of questions yeah we could get to it and you guys could take it by stage so yes the sort of visibility that's where you start that's when you do the discovery right so what what are you discovering how do you actually do that discovery so a lot of that is about making sure that we've got all the flow and telemetry that we need from the various different sources of our network coming into stealthWatch feeding into the processes and algorithms that are going on there so a lot of things is not only net flow data but getting ice integrated in there as well being able to pull that user attribution data and being able to find sources of data where we maybe can convert it into net flow if it's not already net flow and be able to ingest that data as well we also in that space typically to help set up customers with a lot of different best practices that kind of get them operationalized very quickly and things like being able to build custom reports and dashboards for them will work through them which is kind of understanding the system from a base level to more of a professional fully operational level a lot of times we come in during the stage two and customers don't even understand what's going on in their network they're seeing things that maybe they've never seen before one stealthWatch turns on a great example actually as we were at a large financial firm and we were able within 30 minutes of being on site with them through our services team we were able to identify rogue DNS servers unsecured telnet going on sequel injections suspicious SMB and that's the sage traffic this is all just within 30 minutes of us coming on there and taking a look at this stuff you don't even want to look at sometimes yeah so who's doing this can I mean is this sort of all automated you've got professionals sort of overseeing it in our society yeah so the team that we have the technology transformation team when we've talked about it before that team is kind of on the bleeding edge of helping customers and you know a lot of these services that that Kyle talked about is we are building services that customers are consuming based on their needs today and that's why the team is very flexible we build you know a lot of these integrations with those requirements in mind and then we take those and we can scale that so these are all field engineers we have developers so in in essence it is like a mini development team that goes out and works on the specific things that customers need to protect themselves okay and my understanding is there's a there's an ongoing learning with the customers and a it's a transfer of knowledge from day one right there the customer is with you on this in each of these phases and you're sort of learning as they go along and that's sort of part of the transfer of knowledge it's I would say even a tool a transfer knowledge too because we're teaching them our best practices and how to best be successful with these systems but we also learn from them what's going on what are the trends that they're seeing how can we help get them to the next stage and that's where our technology and transformation group comes and they're able to be on the cutting edge here the problems that the customers are talking about and be able to take stealthWatch to the next level okay let's dig it to the detection phase so this is where you're classifying things like host groups etc I'm interested in how that happens is that you know it used to be you'd get everybody in a room you start drawing pictures and that just doesn't scale it's too complicated today so can you auto classify stuff how does that all work and use them oh yeah genius math to do that so so traditionally the the you know the MIT's a manual effort to classify your whole group somebody who's very familiar with the network comes in and they say okay these are the DNS servers these are the web servers these are this network scanners oh oh today but the problem is that today's networks are so dynamic and fluid that what the network looks like today is not necessarily going to be the same tomorrow so there needs to be that relief from the analyst to be able to come in there needs to be that automation that they can go in each day and know that their system is going to be classified accurately and meaningfully that way the behavioral detection that is built into stealthWatch is also driven and accurate and meaningful - so we have this service so for example our host group automation service and through that we're able to pull in telemetry and data from various different sources such as IP address management systems cmdbs we can do threat feeds as well external threat feeds and we're able to drive the classification based off of the metadata that we see from these different sources so we're able to write different types of automation rules that essentially pull this data in detect the different patterns that we're seeing with that metadata and then drive that classification stealthWatch that way when you come in that next day you know that your network scanners are gonna be classified as Network scanners and your web servers are gonna be web servers etc etc so you you have that integrity of data coming in every single day yeah so a lot of different data sources data quality obviously really important I mean you'd love it if somebody had like you know a single CMDB from ServiceNow boom and pop it right in but that's not always the case we never always the case there's always a challenge and that's where kind of our services engineers come in they're able to work through these different environments and understand what the main admit what the metadata is where we need to go and how we need to classify and driving the classification from there so it does require a little bit of a human element on the front-end but once we get it worked out it can be fully automated you know there's lots of different sources and the quality of the data is not always there we've seen for example customers who have Excel spreadsheets and everything is just you're all over the place and we have to figure out a way to work with that and that's part of what our engineer success is so before we get to the integration piece can you been following this industry for for a while um security is really exciting space it's growing like crazy it's really hard I did a braking analysis piece you know a few weeks ago just talking about the fragmentation in the business you see startups coming out like crazy big valuations at the same time you see companies like Cisco with big portfolios yeah you mentioned Splunk before and they've kind of become a gold standard for for log files but very complex and you talk to security practitioners and they'll tell you our number one problem is just skillsets so get you know paint a picture of what's going on in the security world and what's in the house cisco is trying to address that so the security teams the analysts all the way up the management chain to the sea so they're under tremendous pressure their businesses are growing and so when their businesses are growing the sort of a tax base is growing and the business is growing faster than they can protect it so with the sort of increase in the economy more money more investment to build more point products so you've got a very stressed team a lot of turnover skill sets aren't great and what do we do as an industry we just give them more technology right more tools more tools complexity avalanche ok they're buried all right so we feel and we've made great strides within the security group within Cisco is we're taking the products that we have and we're integrating them under one platform so that it is in a bunch of point products and so that the that's what everybody else is doing I mean the other guys are acquiring companies then they're trying to integrate those because the customers are saying I don't need another point protocol yeah yeah it's too much so you know with us that's the way we approach it and now with the platform that's going to be launching this year the cisco threat response that we've launched you're gonna see later on in this year that we will be selling and positioned in implementing the entire platform yeah so I have a stat I came up with this and my one of my analyses it was the the worldwide economy is like 86 trillion and we spent about 0.014 percent on security so we're barely scratching the surface so this sort of tools avalanche probably isn't gonna change though integration becomes an extremely important aspect of the customer journeys and it's through that and to continue on that point you just made as well - I believe in our Cisco cybersecurity report from 2017 only fifty four six percent or fifty seven percent of actual threats are being investigated remediated so there's always that need to kind of help build bridge that gap make it easier for people to understand these threats and and mitigate and prioritize know what to go after right which part the integration exactly so we do have a lot of different integration services as well - for example I mentioned our sim integration service one thing that we can really do that's really awesome with that is we're able to deploy for example with Splunk a full-fledged stealthWatch for Splunk application that allows you to utilize stealth watches capabilities directly inside of Splunk without having to actually store an index any data inside of Splunk so all these api's are on demand inside of this app and available throughout the rest of the Splunk capabilities as well so you can extend it into other search reporting correlate that against other sets of data that you have and Splunk you can do quite a bit with it we also have other ways absolutely advantage of that is just obviously integration you're not leaving the environment plus its cost you're saving customers money a lot of a lot of customers kind of see their sim as a single pane of glass so being able to bring that stealthWatch value into that single pane is a huge win for our customers not to mention that reduction in licensing costs as well we have other ways to that we can reduce licensing costs some customers like to send their flow data into their sim for deeper analytics and long-term retention and we have a service we call it our flow adapter service and through this service we're essentially able to take buy flow off of the stealthWatch flow collectors and the buy flow is essentially when the raw net flow hits the stealthWatch flow collectors it's coming from multiple different routers and switches on the network this is gets converted into bi flow which is bi-directional deduplicated stitched together flow records so right there by sending that data into a sim or a data Lake as opposed to ronette flow we see data reduction cost anywhere from 15 to 80% depending on how the customers network is architected great any any favorite customer examples you have that you can share where ya guys have gone in you know provided these services and and it's had an outcome that got the customer excited or you found some bad guys or there's one that's one of my favorites so we have this service we call it our asset discovering classification service and I mentioned the host tree of automation service that's if you have some sort of authoritative source we can pull that information in but if a customer doesn't have that authoritative source they don't know what's on their network and a lot of times too they want to do a segmentation effort they're undergoing network segmentation but they need to understand what's on their network how these devices are communicating and that's where our asset discovery classification service comes in we're able to pull in telemetry not just from stealthWatch but other sources such as ice tetration Active Directory I Pam's again as well and we're able to essentially profile these different devices based off of the nature of their behavior so we were at a kind of a large technology company and we were essentially in this effort trying to segment their security cameras and upon segmenting their security cameras we were able to build this report where we can see the security camera and how its communicating with the other parts of the network and we noticed that there was essentially two IP addresses from inside of their network that were accessing all these different security cameras but they were not authorized to so with this service we were able to see that these different these two hosts were unauthorized actually accessing these devices that got reported up through the management chain and ultimately those two employees were no longer at that technology permanence that was discovered nice to love it alright bring us on we're here in the dev net zone sort of all about hit for structures code and software and and and and talk a little bit about the futures where you see this all going yeah so for us for Cisco security the future is really bright we've either built or acquired a portfolio that the customers really need that get absolute outcomes that customers need and through the customer experience organization certainly stealthWatch is fitting into the broader play to to get customers who have all those technologies get that operational and get them success so when we talked last summer I told you the jury was still out we would see how the journeys gonna go and the journey has started it has gotten much better since the summer and this year I think we're gonna be doing some great things for our customers just we can't get in too much of the business but stealthWatch customers are still expanding because I think we told you last time customers can never get enough stealthWatch okay the attack surface is too big right so so we we feel really good about that and the other technologies that they're building really fit into what customers need we're going to the cloud so they're gonna be able to consume cloud on-prem hybrid protect networks the campus protect their cloud infrastructure so we're really checking a lot of boxes in our group brings it all together and takes all the complexity out of that for customers just to get them the outcomes that I named us Cisco is one of my four star security companies for 2020 okay based on spending data that we share from our friends at ETR and the reason was because cisco has both a large presence in the market and but also you have spending momentum I mentioned 22% you know growth last quarter and the security business but you've also got the expertise you put your money where your mouth is you know the big portfolio which helps if you can bring it together and do these types of integrations it simplifies the customers environment and so that's a winner in my book so I named you along with some other high fliers right you know and you see some really interesting startups coming out and probably acquisition targets probably something that aren't your radar but guys thanks so Six Labs Incubator Investor. Same dull bet with sink. Sorry. So sorry They got that wrong with little glare on my spring there. Thanks for coming on. Appreciate it. Guys, start up. Scene here is robust. Last year from this year, More energy, more deployed capital because you're deploying capital. You're building a company. Give us the update start. >> Yeah, I would say over the past year, just our Bahrain location alone. We've already hit 23 startups that we've invested in, and we're looking to increase that number by about 68 start ups every six months. Um, as you've seen over the past year and Amina region and the GCC, there's rapid growth in the startup scene. Um and we're slowly starting to see each vertical fill up with the relevant startups and get more saturated. I think for a while we were one of the regions that were a lot less saturated when it came to our local startup because systems and the rest of the world The good thing is, now that we've gotta love the financial infrastructure into place, flat six Labs is one of them. And I think that's where we really um, we're lacking support before on DSO were signed to feel see players come into every stage of the startup growth be ableto help the stops raise their seed funds. Siri's a Series B >> and your role here is outreach building out my rain. Yet where the Economic Development Board trying to figure out that put together an entrepreneur strategy and not figure it out. We know what it is. You get money? Yeah, yeah. Party together, >> Yes. So what we're trying to do is there's two main things. One is that we're trying Thio finally be the first kind of financial investor that can help people going from a full time job in tow. You know, full time entrepreneurship rolls on to give them access to three of the biggest barriers that they usually will face, which is a business development network mentorship on Capitol andan. Everything that we're doing is weed. So personally, What I take care of is that I go to a lot of the international events around the globe, would start up because systems and try and find very early stage founders and educate them on the market. The region see where people would fit, where the gaps are in the market on dumb kind of raise awareness of old advantages that we have here in Bahrain. >> What makes you guys different? What's the differentiation >> as a country or as flat six labs? Both. So I'd say, as a country behinds in a very unique position where we have, ah, cultural mindset that is very easy for a lot of foreigners and expatriates to adapt to, Um, I think we've even been ranked number one in the world as a place for expect us to live several times on DA number. Thing is that we have a very high skilled workforce. Um, overhead costs are lower. So, for example, when it comes to the cost of rent when it comes to hiring a team, you also have subsidies that come into place like Tom Keen, uh, which Sam has also benefited from where if you go and you hire fresh graduate Bahrainis, you'll get >> ah, >> large margin of that subsidized by the government. So you're looking at, ah, mix where you have a high quality of life. But at the same time, it's the best starting point for a lot of start ups. Because you can extend your runway. You have, ah, much lower cash burn, and at the same time you've got one of the biggest market places right next door, which is Saudi Arabia, is the 30 minute drive across the bridge. So we've kind of got the best of all worlds over here, and and because we're a small country, we have a government that's incredibly reactive. So the regulatory authorities are very close with the startup ecosystem, for example, were always involved in the economic development board round table meetings on the ministries, all working closely together to try and make this as friendly and atmosphere is possible for the startup >> and they're authentic. That's interesting and see government authentically aligning. >> Yeah, it's in the interest of entrepreneur, I would say. One thing we really have going on is it's really an nationwide initiative from the founders to the private entities and investors like us and to the governmental agencies where we all are really dedicated towards making this start up >> san talk about your company. What do you guys do and what's your situation? >> Right? So my company's name is sinking. We're software as a service company that helps businesses manage the really hard aspects of managing their employees like things like timesheets scheduling. Job safety is a big one for us and job costing, and our target market is actually us small businesses and way were early stage company, and we met Salar and Flat six Labs, and they convinced us to come sit up here in Bahrain and never looked back. But the access to talent here is just amazing the cost of very low and were able to do a lot of a very small amount of money. And so far we've got to a total of four and 1/2 1000 U. S. Businesses using the platform. And we've done that all here from Bahrain, >> so very low, low cost leverage, a model, and that's because of the substance of just talent >> as a >> mixer, so it's a little bit cheaper to hire. People have more access to tell him it's a number of things. It's both of those things. >> Yeah, the university programs were interesting there. Got a degree in cloud Computing. They announced that we heard that news today. I mean, that's compelling. I mean, have you want to make the market just teach it? Yeah, exact. This is good, I think. >> I think the good thing is that everyone's come to an understanding that all parties have to get actively involved to make it the right atmosphere. So the universities are also working very closely with us hand in hand. And I've seen Percy a gigantic improvement over the past year where their senior projects of the universities are turning out where they got legitimate startup. It's Dex on Dhe. Some of them are even ready to go straight into acceleration, which was not the case a few years ago. So everybody's really on board. >> That's one of things we met last year in the economic Dillman for that round table. Lotte. I won't say complaints but concerns, and they're very listening to the whiteboards out their charts. How are they doing? Checking the boxes? They are checking the items off, moving these blockers and what's remaining in your mind in terms of things to make it frictionless. >> Yeah, I'd say like there's so far. We've done a great start andan the space of a year. We've accomplished a lot. But of course there's still shifting the whole mentality to understand the startup scene and also, you know, to get people to be less as, ah, cultural mentality, risk averse and start letting people feel that failure is an okay thing. It's okay to go straight out of university and give it a shot and try and start your own startup, Um, and also educating people of all the tools that are available to them. So although we do a lot of outreach and roadshows, still, there's, ah, a lot of people that need to be educated on how exploration works, how the VC side of it works. And I'd say another thing. We need Thio See coming is bridge funds. So we've got people that are ready to come in at Siri's a that precede that seed. But then there's usually these gaps where we need to kind of help Fila's well to keep people on target towards seriously >> like a bullpen. Capital kind of model. Like Paul Martinez Company? We're in the DevNet Zone, we've been here all week. Dave, this DevNet Zone is the place to be at Cisco Live. >> Well, first of all, it's so packed downstairs, not that it's not packed here, but there's a little space you can walk around in, number one, and number two, it's where all the action is from the learning standpoint and education. People are just eating it up, they're like sponges. >> They are eating it up. Speaking of learning, we are pleased to welcome Mike Adams, the VP and GM of Learning at Cisco. Mike, welcome to theCube. >> Thank you, it's my pleasure to be here. >> We talked to Susie a number of times, she's actually coming on to guest host with me in an hour or so, and looking at the DevNet evolution in the last five years, 600,000 members in this community, which is mind-boggling how this is, I teased that it was like a field of dreams. >> (chuckles) >> Dave: Which also was 30 years ago. >> It is, yes. That's kind of scary isn't it? But also so is Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, I think those are two really good ways of looking at DevNet. If we look at some of the things that you guys have announced with respect to bringing software skills and software practices to network engineers, it's a big signal in Cisco's evolution. Talk to us about some of the things you guys have announced from the certification perspective and why that's a signal of changing winds. >> Yeah, absolutely. It's been exciting. Susie and I have been working together very closely for the last year in preparation for this. I'm not sure if I'm Bill or Ted in the combo. >> Lisa: Either one's pretty good. >> You're the one who started the excellent adventure. >> That's right. There's some really fundamental significant changes to the program. The most exciting, of course, is the launch of our DevNet branded software certification. It's one of a kind in the industry. There is not other company that has the mix of network engineering certifications and software certifications like Cisco does, certainly not at the scale that we do. We've certified over 1.7 million people since the program has launched over 25 years ago. You imagine the power of bringing together the community of developers with this community of network engineers that we've created. The sky's the limit. It's going to be amazing. That's the biggest announcement is the launch of the software certification, DevNet certification. We've made some other pretty important changes too, and all of these were based on the feedback that we got from customers and partners. One is you can now use continuing education credits to maintain your certification at any level. Rather than having to go back and retake the test every three years, now you can branch out and learn new things, like software as a continuing education credit to maintain that certification you have. We've also added flexibility into the program. In the past, you had to start at associate level and then go to professional and then go to expert. Today, if you feel like you're ready for professional, we invite you to start right there. If you feel like you're ready for that very rigorous CCIE Lab Exam, bring it on, we'll welcome you into it. We feel like that's going to give learners more of a choice in terms of how they process their learning and training and which certifications they want to pursue. Go on, I could go on. >> Let's keep goin'. You could essentially cut the line if you've had some field experience, and/or you just naturally have an affinity towards this. >> That's right. If you have developed depth of expertise and skill and experience, but you haven't started the certification program, why would I make you go back and take an entry level engineer exam just to work your way into the direction you wanted to go, rather we welcome you to come in and start working where you feel like you're ready. >> Can you explain more about the continuous certification, because if I infer correctly, it used to be every three years you got to re-up, kind of like an EMT has to get re-certified. That's not required anymore? You can traverse across the portfolio? >> I'll answer it very specifically. In today's program, the highest level, the CCIE, the expert level, that level can use continuing education credits to re-certify, to maintain their certification. We've extended that same principle to all the others, so today, if you had a CCNA, and you wanted to maintain that CCNA, you would have to go take that exam again. We think it's a lot more valuable, and it's interesting you would mention EMTs, there are lots of other verticals and professions, there's a lot of data and science behind this, that will say that there's more value in terms of extending and maintaining your skills by doing continuing education rather than studying for a test. >> Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. You're allowing the folks to have more control over their education. >> Mike: Exactly. >> Choose your own adventure kind of thing. >> Mike: That's right. >> Also, one of the things that sort of strikes me about what Cisco has done in this big pivot, software's becoming developer friendly, which for a large organization with a history and the girth that Cisco has is not easy to do. From a competitive advantage perspective, what are you hearing from customers, in terms of, are you seeing this as a dial-up on Cisco's competitive edge? >> Yes, absolutely. We took counsel from Gerri, our Head of Sales, she believes very strongly that the DevNet certification, in combination with our network certification program, gives us a real selling edge because it demonstrates the commitment we have to solving real world problems for our customers. We know our customers are anxious to take advantage of what software on top of the network creates for them. To take advantage of those APIs, to build applications and programs that let them maximize the use of their technology as they compete in their own marketplaces. We're absolutely hearing very positive things about how this differentiates Cisco. I'll just add one more point. Even though it looks like there's two tracks, there's a network engineering track and a software track, that's really not the case. It's one certification program. As an example, at the professional level, to earn that CCNP, you have to take a CORE exam, and then you take a concentration exam in the same technology vertical. Data Center, Enterprise, Collaboration, Security Service Bribe, or DevNet. Interestingly, in each of the first five that I mentioned, you'll take the CORE exam and then the concentration can be a DevNet concentration. So we're inviting people to begin to add that software skills into the traditional network certification track that they've had. >> I wonder if you could help us understand the philosophy of the programs. I've seen some education programs, it's like a Chinese menu. It's deep and wide. My sense is that a lot of companies, some companies, not a lot, have said, "Okay, we're really not relevant to the Cloud market, "Let's do some Cloud certifications," stamping it premature there. It seems like Cisco's strategy is to be very focused. Is that fair? Maybe you could add some comments to that. >> It's absolutely fair. We've been very thoughtful about how we have structured the program and what content we have put into it. We've been very mindful to focus on need-to-know information in the CORE exams, and then allowing the learner to choose concentrations for the nice-to-know, the things they want to round themselves out with. Around relevancy, we built the program with job-role specific skills in mind. As an example we've been talking about it this week. Dev Sec-Ops Engineer is an example. It would maybe get their CCNP in Enterprise, route switch, and then they could add on to that various DevNet concentration exams to earn them specialists that would mix that, whether it be WebEx or IOT, and then those combination of skills speak to a very specific job role, this Dev Sec-Ops Engineer, as an example. There are other ways you can mix and match the components to create the capability around skills for a job. >> I imagine as time goes on with these new certifications that you guys are going to be analyzing the different pathways that each person is taking to understand, maybe looking at some consistencies and maybe even offering some recommendation, recommended pathways. >> That's exactly right, because as those job roles evolve in the industry, we're constantly evaluating what skills are needed for those, making sure that we're bringing those to the market. I just can't say enough how important it is to DevNet certification is. Being able to have developers demonstrate their capabilities and skills through a certification is really powerful. >> What's the strategy with regard to partnering with universities, are you doing things along those line? >> I'm so glad you brought that up. There's another leader that Susie and I have been working with, Laura Quintana, she's runs Networking Academy. Networking Academy reaches out to higher education, and also to high schools, they also create networking academies in underserved areas around the globe. Laura and her team have been at this for a while. They have trained over 9.2 million people and have a goal to graduate another two million within the next year. The reason I mention that is that's the arm of Cisco that reaches into higher education and invites people in underserved areas into our industry by giving them those fundamentals. The primary certification that they graduate with is the CCNA, is that entry-level engineer, and now entry level software DevNet associate, those are the graduation that they'll focus on out of Networking Academy. We do a lot of that. >> How about the technology of learning. When you started this almost three decades ago, this is a massive scale of learning. How has the technology of learning evolved? >> Massively. Think about how you like to learn new things. Much of it is going to the web, or finding some digital format, and then doing it at your own pace. That's the other important thing here as well. We are massively transforming the way we are meeting our customers through digitized products. It's very important. Another one of the other big announcements this week was the move from Cisco's services to customer experience, you may have heard Maria Martinez on stage, day two. If you noticed there were four main pillars to the CX Strategy, one of them was learning, active learning. We know that by embedding learning and education into the digital products that we have and getting it to our customers just in time, and ideally by looking at telemetry coming back from how they're using our products, maybe I can predict what training you need before you know you even need it. That's where we're going. >> Very awesome. Last question for you, Mike. Cisco's a massive part of our Ecosystem, we've been talking with a lot of them this week, and at many events, what's to them, to your partners, what does the certification and this massive change signal to them in terms of Cisco's evolution? >> It absolutely signals where the company is going, our commitment to software, our commitment to continue to evolve and stay on the forefront of technology, giving them what they need to go serve their customers and make money in the meantime. Our partner ecosystem is so critical to this company. The software certification, as an example, is going to allow them to demonstrate to their customers, in a very quantifiable way, how many DevNet certified engineers they have. Some of these partners have over a thousand DevNet members already, but wouldn't it be great via certifications? It's a real differentiator for them. I'll mention one other thing. We have a group of very strong learning partners that we work with that extend our capability globally, that are able to take the content that we create and then form that to meet the needs of very specific customers. There's another aspect of partners that are critical to this transformation. >> So you talk about partners to your customers, to the engineers, when I was at IDG one of the most frequently read articles was the Annual Computer World Salary. >> Mike: (laughs) >> You know what, if everyone's going to publish salaries, I'm going to look and see where do I stand. That's part of it, getting more certifications, you're going to be worth more in the market. >> It is. We've got some really good data that says what an investment in professional or expert level certification should do for your W-2 at the end of the year, and we're very mindful of that. >> DevNet bringing the street-cred. Mike, it was great to have you in the program. I can only imagine how dynamic you and Susie are together. >> We have a lot of fun. >> I got to see that next time. Congrats on all the success. [Music] everyone welcome to the special cube conversation here to talk about the big announcements big news big concepts and big trends happening Cisco live in Barcelona I'm John for your host of the cube we're here with Fabio Gauri senior director cloud solution marketing at Cisco I've been great to see you things are spending time to me to unpack all the exciting news in Barcelona great stuff thank you thank you for having me John so one of the things that's happening with Cisco we've covered certainly we've been reporting and reporting are other outlets as well and you guys have been transforming and continuing to innovate Cisco has transformed itself into the next level building on your successes we've been covering that and that's been all about the clouds been all about networking going you know software driven you know software powered network operations DevOps the whole thing is now infiltrating into into the new model but it's clear now there's no debate that on-premise data centers on-premise environments of IT service providers the entire old you know computing industry is connecting with the cloud that's been kind of validated and we've been staring at that for a couple of years and now everyone's starting to take action this is a key theme here in Barcelona for you guys and we heard you see you talking about it last year at Cisco live in North America that transition to cloud validated across the voice or Andy chassis the CEO of AWS actually announced an on-premise device hybrid cloud has been validated so public cloud and on-premise and now visibility into what kubernetes is enabled with multi cloud mm-hmm this is the new normal describe that impact in the marketplace what does it mean for customers what do they do what what is it what does this mean when now enterprises are seeing on-premise and cloud coming together absolutely well you know if you think about it you gotta start from the application so if you take a step back right we've been talking about digitization for so long but what does that ultimately mean right people need to build more and more applications to digitize their their business processes their customer experience and so on and so forth ultimately what we're seeing is that this applications are becoming exceptionally distributed right because they go what it makes sense whatever the data is whatever the user is you may have low latency needs you may have actually just you know the right needs to go all the way to the cloud in reality you have a mix of this kind of needs but workloads are distributed and people want to harness this multi cloud world and that's what we're seeing I love these chips it's kind of like people have been living on two sides of the street you know old way new way it's clear that the migration to this new model cloud is the new way and that's been validated again so you've got the old way in new way describe in your mind the old way and the new way from Cisco because if you look at the history of Cisco the dominance and the success I had and recently had an opportunity to be John Chambers at his house and he talked about that that dynamic of how Cisco is so dominant the culture and then going the next level the datacenter you guys have a great success networking edge this is New York or business yeah that's still relevant with the cloud in the new way so talk about what's changed all the way new way Francisco I'll give you a try so fundamentally if you if you if you remember where we're coming from we are coming from an era where we've been seeing infrastructure kind of dictating application requirements through the other way around as well but you had an application you will buy specific hardware networking and everything else including firewalls for a specific infrastructure right so that era actually is not going away is there because it's built an immense amount of legacy that you can not all of a sudden throw away however the new world is a world where you see applications fundamentally going pretty much across multiple type of domains not just to do the center domain anymore but here comes the cloud we have a lot of applications that are going to the edge if you have a branch office right you may want to take your application over there because it's simpler it's it's sometimes it's more economic you don't need to move all the data and still you can have those applications collaborating with your data center with your cloud so what you're now seeing is a completely from world where applications want the infrastructure to be programmable and easy accessible and still extremely secure that's interesting in the old way was you know the you dictate applications you can only do as much as the network and the infrastructure will let you to do yeah and then now as infrastructure becomes more abundant yeah data tsunamis have spent a lot of data's coming in so that's why the storage industry never docking it's always growing storage industries always growing servers as always need for compute but as is more abundance than that it almost as a limitless opportunity for applications so it's not a you know kill the old and bring in the new it's more of a foundational hold as now foundational it is literally next level thing so kubernetes service meshes these programmable policy-based abstractions are showing the way and that's a network construct policy is a network concert so the first time we're seeing is the coming together of the app market with infrastructure absolutely and if you think about it even a step before the apps people have when they build application they have a business intent right let's make an example you take healthcare application right you want in a hospital you want the doctors to be able to access you know the full extent of the data of a customer record for instance you may not want the nurses doing the same thing or for instance you don't want the nurses and the doctors to get access to the financial system of the hospital so this is actually a business intent that that given application will have to respect well the infrastructure can and has to cope with this kind of requirements by delivering the appropriate kind of segmentation right so that you'll be able to ensure that what the application wants to do the infrastructure delivers what has changed in the on premise and cloud world in your mind because to have that kind of coordination and you guys are have announced here it's some great announcements around seamless end-to-end as a theme we're seeing you're seeing hyper convergence anywhere are you seeing application centric infrastructure concepts everywhere but when you actually go into the hood and look at how complex it is it's almost magical in the sense that it's going on its I know it's hard work and people who know networking know it's hard what are the innovations what's enabling that what is the key driver that's making you guys connect an on-premise data complex data center environment that is now edges private networks hybrid private cloud IOT edge enterprise edge campuses the old stuff now with cloud what are the key linchpins well hey I'm gonna take on one of the the words that you use complexity people are looking for the opposite of complexity people are looking for simplicity easy to say more difficult to do but what sits between complexity and and and turning it into a more simple kind of architecture is automation so what you have to have is fundamentally an infrastructure that becomes automated programmable that takes the business intent or the application intent as an input and actually with a closed-loop system fundamentally monitors and gives you the assurance okay the implementation the assurance that actually what you want to do gets delivered by the infrastructure and this has to be literally annalistic and cross-domain kind of architecture what do I mean with cross-domain you're going out of the data center you're going out to the edge you're now going to the cloud this should be seen as a cohesive almost fluid environment where you can actually push your policy your security models right and transform in this highly fragmented the architecture into a set of domains or a multi domain architecture that you can control that you can automate as if it was all yours so to speak even though in the cloud for instance you're going into a domain that you don't control end-to-end so big concept here being discussed in Barcelona is multi domain you just get that explain that a little bit and then take that to where cloud integration comes in because the other thread that we're seeing here is multi cloud yeah so multi domain multi-cloud the same are they different what's the nuance points there yeah again the the critical point is let's think applications applications want to go and it's convenient to go into multiple domains right depending on what you want to do what you want to access to you wanna access clouds innovation from whatever they come from so that's why we have a multi cloud world the data center is still there is critically important you have a lot of applications databases that are still there and now we're seeing the big new shiny object which which is more and more super Robo remote office branch office applications where for instance IDC believes 30% of applications are going to be deployed into this kind of environments so your problem is now connecting all of this together right and because the applications are going anywhere are the designer strategy is that the data center needs to follow the applications and support them wherever they go so it's a data center anywhere kind of kind of strategy the data center has to flex and provide that yes be ready for anything basically from from applications what you're getting at and all the all the plumbing and all the all the intelligence underneath it have to be reactive to what the application wants absolutely a vocation doesn't have to get into the provisioning or any kind of policy because that's the infrastructure as code DevOps the point is that that kind of absolutely the application has an intent right there's also application policy etcetera but it needs to be translated into infrastructure policy where we've been talking about it a minute ago when we were doing the the healthcare kind of example right well we've been super excited in collaborating with you guys on kubernetes we have a special section on silicon angle called the kubernetes special report that's evolving into multi cloud special reports the folks watching Silicon angle comm check out the multi classify syrup or that should be up and yeah by now it was the COO Bernays but ton of interest was seeing startups coming out of the kubernetes you're seeing a cloud native world CN CF and Linux foundation promoting tons of great ecosystem development pulling together those developers want more infrastructure and so that and they wouldn't want to deal with it right so this is where you the cloud strategy has been paying off for you guys you guys have had done deals with Google as your AWS s ap Red Hat among others you guys are well poised for this talk about cloud Center that's a big piece of the story here yeah cloud Center suite a new capabilities talk about the impact of cloud and cloud Center yeah so let me let me let me take us the buck if you want and tell you a little bit more about what we're announcing here right because it's a pretty big announcement I mentioned at the center anywhere what does it mean right well of course our data center portfolio is sent around two big components the first one is networking right particular application center came first structure a CI based on the Nexus 9 K kind of architecture and the second one is our computing portfolio particularly you know the hyper-converged infrastructure cisco hyper flex that's of course you know an extremely efficient way of condensing you know what you need to make it very flexible in your application implementation where we have two major news here right in this two areas and the third is absolutely what you were asking for which is Cloud Center so with a CI and it's interesting because they're going into two if you want different directions when it comes to the small T cloud domain AC I was already visualized in the previous releases sorry application centric infrastructure is fundamentally cisco in ten base networking for the data center okay it gives you program ability of the infrastructure it gives you segmentation gives you security and a high degree of automation capabilities exactly okay continue and so in the previous in the previous if you want developments releases of ACI what we've been doing was to aggressively visualize a CI right so that you will have constructs like virtual poles and virtual leaves to rescale your data center implementation to the edge now where we're going with this new announcement is exactly on the other side which is we're standing ACI to the cloud to usher in AWS so that the construct that you have typically on Prem under your control such as tenants EP G's and things of this nature will be translated into the equivalent construct in AWS whether it's VP C's or security groups and the likes the two things end up fundamentally corresponding so now we have one construct that extends from the edge to the data center to the cloud that's a pretty big deal and what does that mean to the customer just give an example it means a high degree of automation security and control on the resources right so that you can impose one policy it propagates all across the board one way of monitoring you know the data center flows and discovering for instance if you have if you have any kind of security threat monitoring application performance thanks to the inter so this fully checks this hybrid cloud box this ship I say yes is one a hybrid deployment this checks the box saying I can operate and say whatever cloud and on-premise in the datacenter with a CI both places without changing any code is it seamless what's the what's that well with a CI is gonna come with a specific software this is all software that's that's the beauty of it right it's it's in line with the transformation the company that you were referring to it's all software and it goes into AWS and uses of course all the api's to connect 2d to the AWS resources that you were you're you're acquiring from AWS right so that's one big bucket of news the second bucket o news is hyper flex that's actually heading to the edge because what we're seeing is more and more applications that have components of the application itself or even entire applications that are going into remote office branch offices and the reason are many right it could be cost reason it could be did a gravity reason it could be just low latency reason right we all know that you know to go back and forth from the cloud that's not always convenient as well as if you lose the connectivity your branch is dead right so you have to you need to have business continue it in all of this and so it doesn't mean that you don't want the cloud you want a collaboration across this again fluid sort of infrastructure so I purflex come with a very efficient kind of kind of fun factor over there now it's either flex edge and its control Emilia this is that because you have many remote offices and branch offices is controlled from the cloud with cisco inter side which is of course our console and cloud system to manage all these hand points no just hyper flex but also UCS so when you think of this now you understand what do we mean with the dissenter anywhere because we're taking both our networking and our computing platforms anywhere the application needs them right and the third component which actually is where your questions started from is application lifecycle management in this kind of infrastructure becomes even more of a problem right it is extremely complicated now to have applications in multiple clouds and then in your data center and to the in India JH and in you know all these different kind of places so what we've done with cloud center which is our flagship club management and an orchestration system is two big things first we have expanded the functionalities by adding new modules especially the cause optimizer the helps operations team at Center suite now it's the cloud center suite and I'll explain you in a moment why we remove the branding slightly from cloud center to cloud center suite because we highly modularize the software and and make it and made it really much more easy to consume I'll go there in a moment but going back to what is new first of all is cost optimizer right that's that's brand new and it helps Operations team to right-size the workload to pick up the the best instances in the cloud are you using to actually minimize your investment or reach your your goal of performance and cost right that's one big thing the second one is that we're adding a very smart so called action Orchestrator which is a workflow manager that helps you automate in there tear connection of your cloud management system to all the other systems right some of these plugins and integrations come outer-box particularly with the higher level tiers of licensing such as with service now for instance or we give you already built-in integration with cisco inter side or UCS director which is the infrastructure manager for Cisco infrastructure but you can use the kind of platform and module to build your own integrations with the other systems that's very important because the cloud management system doesn't exist in isolation right it needs to integrate with all the other IT management solution that you have on Prem and that's one big thing the second big thing as you said before when you said about the suite is the fact that because we have written all of this new software and cuber Nerys right this is highly scalable highly portable so now we can give you different tiers of licenses you can start very small as small as around $50,000 right for subscription service and you can actually bite subscription on pram or that's big news you can buy Nate software-as-a-service so cloud center is now Asaf offering yes available when it's gonna be so all the subscription use the new software is going to be available literally a next month in a few days for now right in February and the SAS version is gonna be available in North America in March so right away for Europe of course due to the GDP our implementation our customers will have to wait until the summer but it's pretty immediate and you hear a bit of an extra work done yeah okay so bottom line me on the cloud Center suite what is the the purpose is it to be the high level management suite how is it connecting into other systems so if I have all these different management tools out there when Cisco and others is it connecting into am i connecting up and you just explain quickly you know the purpose of it yeah works so really the goal of Cloud Center is to do a salute three things the first one is a he wants to simplify cloud management and how it does it right one of the key patents that we acquire together we clicker right click a cloud center when we brought them in more than two years ago was the really unique way that they have to model applications right the way that people are managing cloud management and an organization is still extremely manual I mean many customers are still kind of doing scripting we have cases of customers that are scripting like 1200 lines of codes just to upload a piece of software onto the cloud we think the approach should be different right the approach should be you should be able to model that application your application model wants and then thanks to cloud API so we have 16 different API into a cloud integrations with AWS our Google you name it right I BM and the likes we realize of course on parameter private cloud once you model your application you can use any of these other clouds as a target for implementation okay that allows you to have a very very effective cloud management solution because don't risk to make mistakes you leave the tool so you said it's written in kubernetes absolutely we scraped all this now we program all this in Cuban Eddie's so you may tell us hey you're walking the talk absolutely doing that and that's very in that sow actually we can do it on Prem in a Cuban IT infrastructure by the way if you need one we have the Cisco cloud center platform a hyper flex underneath to do it or you can buy from the cloud because we're uploading a little dot to the cloud you guys have done a good job at kubernetes just as a side note you guys done the work it's doing the cloud integrations and I think wasn't she about kubernetes unlike other trends I've seen in some of these open-source projects some hype comes up and then it kind of drops off or it gets hyped up and it's too hard to roll out or use it cost too much and so people actually using kubernetes for not just standing it up they're actually pulling it for a purpose so congratulations on that I think it's a real good thank you for thank you know we're a big believer in to this so simplifying really multiplayer management is one big thing reducing time to value is another big thing because with the integrations and the ability you know to integrate with the other tools you can put it in production very very quickly and then it's incredibly easy to consume you can start small and grow up so I did a little checklist here I want to just run this by you and then I'm going to ask you a question around what all this means to your to your customer base because I'm sure the world's changing we've done a lot of kind of you know surveys and interaction with a lot of network guys to kind of spiel out how the markets going get your reaction so interesting thing you guys have a this builder model very similar to Amazon you know toolkits for cloud builders you guys are really investing heavily and it's a security you got stealthWatch tetration analytics you've got app dynamics and tetration as well datacenter hyper flex UCS Nexus check cloud apps WebEx I know what else is in there there's also cloud apps cloud native apps which you're connecting into management cloud center container platform and IOT kinetic and networking the edge Meraki cloud service route or bunch of other things so you guys are building quite the portfolio on here right so given that you guys have that security to network and kind of end-to-end with the application centric infrastructure are kind of expanding and intent based networking combined cloud seems to be kind of the end-to-end is the theme it really is it's it's again end to end and across multiple domains because that's the thing that doesn't come across with end to end is the fact that you need to cross different domains that are exceptionally different from from each other and so having consistent policies and a single security model having one mean of networking and securing all this in a containerized world which which is where we're progressively going that's everything and you know it's not me saying it but if you look at the CN CF surveys they'll tell you the securing and working containers is one of the toughest things so I got to ask you that the tough question totally makes sense you got my buy-in on it I totally believed in the vision making it work okay making it smart and making it at scale are the three kind of things I'm looking at give us your take on how you guys are looking at those three kind of you know checkpoints you got to get this up and running so one make it work you know end-to-end mobile domains yeah make it intelligent that's data smarter you know automation kicks in and I'll see scaling it up but you know with all the checkbox security everything else so take us through the strategy yeah and what you guys are thinking there and and the impact with that in mind so the person on the other side your customer the buyer and customer Sisko to manage it that's that's a big sea change yeah and the benefits are pretty lucrative on the other side if you can pull this up yeah yeah upon three big aspects so first of all we mean we've been talking about architectures but architectures doesn't mean that you shouldn't have Best of Breed products right it starts from there those are the atomic components of any strategy right you gotta have best of the products now these products need to integrate into an architecture that solves true business problems such as the intent base you know architecture that we've been talking about the third aspect is actually how you help customers to be successful and I will love to call out our partner strategy right which for I would say for as long as 30 years has been Cisco's critical differentiator and I think this is an enormous asset especially when you look at the number one problem in IT out there which is not kubernetes and it's no cloud is actually lack of talent people don't have the skillset and talents so relying on an ecosystem that helps you expanding what you need because you don't have it inside its fundamental importance on you guys absolutely but this is a critical asset and you know we're doing a lot of investments also on the customer experience side of the house with our leader Maria Martinez the staking actually this customer experience so approach to the next level more and more it's about these architectures also being cloud a touch so you heard me talking about inter-site it doesn't come by chance right the more you can rely on on this kind of architectures the more you can harvest analytics you can do cross correlation across multiple networks and domains and figure out what is going wrong that's something that providers of pinpoint products just cannot even dream of delivering as final question for first of all thanks for spending the time and chatting and he was going to be rolling out a lot of content we're gonna be following what's going on with on your end to really like Cisco's vibe you guys are very transparent and collaborating appreciate being there working with you guys final question if someone's watching this I'm a Cisco customer you know we've been talking about the network I which I've talked to a couple you know and surveying some some enterprises where you know the network's they've done the heavy lifting that's been part of the computing industry you know networking compute they've been running the show and really have moved the needle campus networking the list goes on and on but now that foundation set we're going to a whole nother level it's almost like a sea change on the personality side persona of the people who've built it out and now have to build the next generation yeah and my relevant am I gonna be the mainframe guy am I gonna be leading the charge or may be left behind there's a lot of cognitive dissidence around decisions so that go here should I go there architectures so there's a lot of psychology and also decision-making that's gonna be determined by your core audience mm-hmm that person out there is your target audience they're thinking about these things because they want to do well and they don't wanna be left behind what do you say to that audience about Cisco now the opportunity for them personally their ability to one grow their skill gaps or have an impact to being a key change agent for this next generation what do you say that that person out there about the Cisco and the opportunity for them it's it's a very big question I would split a question in two parts first of all is what is your advice to IT professionals right how can they not just survive but thrive and be the heroes of this this transition and it's pretty simple actually you have to understand what your business wants we've been talking about how do you close this gap between of infrastructure and application but in other terms is covering the gap between what you do and what the business wants you've got to understand that right so that's number one second part of the question is okay considering this is cisco the right partner for me and the answer of course from cisco standpoint is approximately yes because our entire company strategy is wrapped around this concept of intent-based architecture where our goal is to map the business intent into the infrastructure underneath and that's exactly your core business mr. IT professional right so I see this as a as a marriage in heaven right in terms of where I see really the talent need for IT going right in IT professionals and where the company is going right if we if we're right and I think we are this is gonna be a great ride and not a threatening one I think everything's lining up you're getting clear visibility into what the role of cloud is the scale PC and personal links are just undeniable and that the role of technologists now are super important there's no jobs really going away they're shifting this is this is the reality this is kind of what the exciting opportunity it is but but again it's about bringing IT very close to the business in the end I believe it's just it's just gonna be continuity between what we call today line of business and IT it's just a company that wants to win in the marketplace right wants to get faster efficient usual kind of you know terminology but you know does this gap is gonna go away Fabio thank you for taking the time to share this conversation I'm John furry this is a cube conversation here at Barcelona live go live Europe back to the cube coverage go to the cube dotnet to check out all the live coverage and cube interviews in Barcelona I'm here with Fabio Korey senior director cloud solutions marking Cisco I'm John for the cube thanks for watching [Music] you

Welcome to this special Cube conversation. We are on the ground in Puerto Rico for Blockchain Unbound and Restart Week, a variety of blockchain, cryptocurrency, industry events, a lot of action here. All the thought leaders, the pioneers, a lot of the people making it happen, from entrepreneurs to the investors, and entrepreneurs who made it in bitcoin blockchain, as well as participants in the local community. Our next guest is Michael Angelo, the co-founder of EDU Block, Edublock.io, EDUblock.io. Interesting story here, he's got a school chain, I call it, going around. Michael, welcome to the conversation. >> It's great to be here. >> So talk about what you guys do. And I think it's super fascinating, you guys are creating a value chain with the university system. Obviously, you know, the first thing that jumps to mind is, hey, it's like the internet. Connect the internet with TCP/IP and next thing you know, the internet's born, the web is born. You're doing something really fascinating with your project, connecting the universities here in Puerto Rico. Take a minute to explain what you're working on. >> Okay, so, Edublock is an educational platform based in Puerto Rico. So what we're doing is, we're connecting every single university in the island to work on open-source projects, to make solutions for the private sector. >> And so you're enabling this actual connectedness, so you got the blockchain which can enable that, cryptocurrency in Puerto Rico is certainly hot. A lot of the ecosystem blending in, coming into the country, into the area; people are excited. What's going on in the front lines? As the young kids are looking at this revolution, this is a massive wave, they've got to be inspired. They've got to look at this as an opportunity. What's some of the things that you're seeing on the front-lines, there? >> Okay, well let me tell you. So, people are scared here. So, Edublock wants to create transparency in blockchain and make people trust us and trust the movement. So we see a bunch of people coming here, and we see a tremendous potential for the island. We could become an emerging market through blockchain technology. But people are scared. Most people come here and they talk about the how and the what, so Edublock wants to talk about the why. So, why is... We want to educate, we want to make this transparent. We want to change the lives of a bunch of people, teach them, so they can become the next world leaders. >> And really, enabling them with tools. So Brock Pierce gave the keynote here, to the kickoff of Blockchain Unbound, as part of a kind of a pitch competition with d10e. Great message, power of we, not me, is really what makes it happen. Paying it forward, cultural ethos. It's global, so this whole global economy's shaping. This is an opportunity for a digital nation to emerge. How do you guys talk about that? The young guys going in there, the developers. The trust needs to be there. What are some of the things people are working on? What kind of things do you imagine happening with Edublock? What are some of the things on your mind, there? >> Okay, so basically what we're doing is, anyone who's coming here in the island, we're just asking them, if you want outreach, you have an ICO, you have a big project, so we have this ecosystem that's running. We have software developers, and you want to teach people. So if you have your ICOs, you have a project, you give it to us, we just lay it down in the ecosystem and see how it works, trial and error. And it's a win-win, 'cause it's free. So you win, you win the expansion here in the island, and we win knowledge. >> So basically, you guys are opening up your arms, saying, hey, throw us what you got, we'll kick the tires, we'll give it a dry run, we'll give you feedback, there's some learnings that are shared. Is that kind of the thing you guys are thinking about? Is that what you're referring to? >> Yeah, that's exactly what we're doing as of now. So we have few projects, we're working with ListCoin, and we have a few ICOs of ourselves, that I cannot go into details right now. But some big projects, that I think some software developers in the island that have talent, could work on, and just develop. >> Michael, talk about who's working with you guys. Who's helping you out? Give some shout-outs, who's involved in the project, what kind of momentum do you have? And what are you guys looking for, for continued support? >> So, we're looking for people that come to the island and have big ICOs. We're looking to just speak with them, see if they could give us some feedback on what we have to do to move along this project. So we're working with Link Puerto Rico, it's a software development company here in the island. So they're helping us with the curriculum. So we're working hands-on with ICOs, but we also want to teach. So we have to make a curriculum. So we teach people that have no idea. The other day, we had an event where we taught 50 people how to create a smart contract from scratch. Those are 50 people who are not the same anymore. So we're working with Brock Pierce, he's going to be one of the main speakers at our event. We're going to have an event the 17th. You can register at Edublock.eo, it's totally free. Why did this event come to be? So, we have Blockchain Unbound, right? So it's about $1,000. So most people want to be part of this event that can't be. Most humans, that's too of a hefty pay. >> John: Yeah, it's a lot of cash. >> It's a lot of cash. You know, $1,000 is food; $1,000 is gas, a whole semester is $1,000. So what we did was, we grabbed 14 main speakers from Blockchain Unbound, Enrique Martinez, Brock Pierce, ListCoin, ArtCoin, they're going to be talking about microgrids, about housing. I love what you're doing, and I'm really thankful you're doing it. And because, when you get people together, magic happens. And I think what's really exciting is that the market is accepting that now. And Brock talked about that on stage today, here at Blockchain Unbound, announcing his restart venture fund. 100% dedicated to entrepreneurs. And he's structuring it in a way, where... I mean, not a lot of preference here. So he gets a little bit carved out for the managers of the fund, and they got some lot of cash they're managing. But it's all about feeding the entrepreneurial ecosystem for venture development. >> And that's great, that's why Edublock has to be a thing. 'Cause we are the educational system in the island. And so, if this is a movement that's happening here, and this is going to become the epicenter of this multi-billion dollar market, we need to have people prepared for this. We have to create the transparency. So that's why Edublock is such an important thing, here in the island. >> I love what you're doing, the young people. I see it in Silicon Valley, all around the United States and around the world. Trust matters, reputation matters, who you work with matters. And I love your project. It reminds me of when I interviewed Vint Cerf many years ago, father of the internet. TCP/IP connected three universities, four universities, five universities, and then multiple universities. That became the backbone for the internet. I see what you're doing as something as game-changing. You can connect the universities and then the curriculum, and keep it decentralized, no central authority, you have the trust and you have the voices of the people and software and applications. That's super fantastic. >> By the way, I just want to say something right now. You don't have to be a software developer to be in Edublock. So, most people are scared that if they aren't a programmer, they don't have experience, the don't know solidity, they can't be part of Edublock. The thing is, we're teaching from scratch, as well. We're working with software, we're working with hardware, we're working with a team of daily traders. Miners, we're going to teach how to make GPU, how to make an A6 from scratch. So you're going to learn a lot of things, and it's free. >> Great point. That brings up the community question. Because the point is, you don't have to be a coder. You're in the community. So, I want to ask you, what is the community like right now? What's it look like? It sounds like it's robust, it's active. What do you and the guys hope to do with the development of the community? >> Okay so the community, I would say it's divided, as of now. So most people are scared, they don't know what's going on. Most people that come here start off with the what, the how, and people are scared. But the young people, are like, yo, this is happening. This is not a moment, this is a movement. This is a movement and they're just so happy to be part of it. >> Well, I got to tell ya, as an old guy like me, I've seen many waves. When the waves come, you jump on it. And I'm so excited that you're doing what you're doing. Appreciate what you're doing. Michael Angelo, co-founder of EDU block.io, Edublock.io. okay we're back at vmworld twenty twelve i'm john fairy with SiliconANGLE calm this is the cube this is our flagship telecast we go out to the events extract a signal from the noise and share that with you i'm joe and stu miniman my co-host with this segment and martine casado the co-founder of nicera you guys are ranking number one on our trending tool that we built under networking because it moved up to the top of the list because of vmworld company had spent a billion dollars for you guys jaishree from Arista called you guys the Instagram of networking kind of tongue-in-cheek on the huge buyout but hey congratulations great wired story today SR with you guys we've done about the talent you have and you brought over the vmworld and you're the top story here so congratulations thank you welcome to the cube thank you so take us through the logic and your motion around past year okay up until the buyout what a roller coaster so just share with us personally from Europe as an entrepreneur what was it like what highlights of what happened well I guess I've been very focused on changing networking right so for me it's been largely a technical ride and since we started the company five years ago we've been focusing on developing core technology and we did that for the first three years and then the last year to us was primarily about execution and customer engagement and so you know we've spent a lot of time proving the technology getting into production doing the support and fixing out that model and so it turned out is a very natural transition point when the acquisition happened because we had gotten traction we had starting to realize how difficult it is to address a market as large as this within a small start-up and so it was very welcome to come join a much larger company where we can kind of provide this as a much box so you guys have some big backers obviously you know they're all it's all well documented in the valley but every entrepreneur has that moments like wait a minute is this what I wanted is this tea but the dollars was so good and vmware's asti growing company what clicked for you what made you go is this the right thing take us through that decision you know absolutely so I mean like to me business guides behavior and at the end of the day the goal is is how do you change networking and have a very very firm belief that the access layer to that network is moving from within the network towards the edge and so we wanted to develop technologies that can use this position to re-implement networking and software and so once you get the core technology done once you prove it out with large customers once you prove out the market the question is is kind of what is the best way to have the biggest impact and I think in some respects you can look at vmware is one of the largest networking companies in the in the world just based on port count right the number of virtual ports that they control is as large as any large networking vendor so this is the opportunity of a lifetime to change in industry so like I've been doing this now you know sdn since those doing my PhD at stanford for so going on 10 years now and this is the the opportunity of a lifetime to actually have broad broad like planet scale impact well congratulations certainly you disrupted the market not only in the validation of the acquisition but as you guys were moving out and talking about some of the deployments you guys were doing it just came out of left field for most people but in the inside baseball sure people knew it was going on in terms of like how you guys are disrupting so so congratulations thank you here I want to talk about is also the messaging here at vmworld very solid around suffered to find datacenter sure and that really kind of brings you into a whole nother beyond networking so you know we've been covering converged infrastructure that's looking a look upon you know around house storage servers and networking so its bigger now than just networking right so now you're taking it to a whole nother leg of the journey so connect the dots out there for the folks between software virtualization and software-defined networking to this to the data center help them understand what is going to happen under that next leg of the journey yeah of course so we're all familiar with compute virtualization right I mean this is how vmware initially changed the world where the time it takes to provision a workload when from weeks to literally minutes like two minutes however I t isn't about single workloads ideas about applications and all the network services that those applications require for example firewalling or security or or monitoring debugging and so even though we reduce the time it took to provisional workload from weeks two minutes you still took days to do everything else that was required so if we take a broad scope if we take a broad look at a thai tea we still realize it still takes days to provision new applications and to provision new workloads and so the only way to get past this the next step that we want to take is to virtualize every aspect of infrastructure and so there's three of those there's there's compute which is virtualized their storage which we're making good progress on and there's network and network really is a pivot piece right it's the one piece that touches everything right it is between the compute in the storage it is between the different types of compute and so if you look at large data centers even cloud data centers the long pole in the tent and provisioning is the network so we must must virtualize that so the goal is the software-defined data center that's like everything's in software everything's totally dynamic you create it on demand you can move it its liquid it's like water it'll go anywhere but in order for this dream to be realized we've got to get the network out of the way and that's what the sierra does we've been talking about going to go and Wikibon we've just kicked up a whole kind of research section on what we're calling data infrastructure and really highlighting this modern era right and we kind of use a lot of sports analogies but you know a modern era meaning the new way not the old way right so you're a classic example of disruption in a new way so talk about the enablement that you see happening from a from a marker play standpoint just you know open your mind and share the crowds and vision around what you will enable with this because networking is has to be dynamic it has that makes total sense you guys have done it what's going to happen next in your mind's eye in terms of what the possibilities are yeah yeah absolutely so I think ultimately this is where we want to get to we want to build a platform that will provide that will recreate you know every Network Service and functionality in a virtualized manner in software from the edge and that means that there can be any service available anywhere over any type of hardware at any scale that's needed and it can be done all at virtualization timeframe so this is like you do an API call you get a virtual network abstraction you add a firewall to it you you configure ackles to it and so all of network configuration all of network services all of network operations become soft state it becomes like a VM image and it's available anywhere that you want it to and so that is the first step so I believe these transformations and systems and this happened many times in the past happen in two steps the first one is you virtualize and when you virtualize you offer the same thing but in a more flexible manner like when you virtualize compute you offered an x86 cpu but you did it in software after you virtualize you can actually change the operational paradigm like when you when they created compute virtualization they didn't immediately get to migration or snapshot or rewind all these other kind of operational benefits these came later so the first step is any networking anywhere you want at any scale automatically and then the second step is like drastically changing the operational paradigm so you can do things like better security so you can rewind configuration state I mean things that we can't even think about today because now we have this ultimate point of indirection that's virtualized this virtualized layer and who's the candidate for these developers just admins net admins all the above is it going to be software programmatic I mean how does that it takes DevOps right to a level of functionality that is just mind-boggling so yeah who's the new personnel yeah it was like who's life does this impact think what happens called a CI easy out there well I mean it's a good question whose life does this impact I mean I mean immediately anybody that's building out a data center like a cloud architect is going to have this this primitive that that they can use to architect better system just like you gave them a virtual machine they use that as a primitive for building better data centers now we're giving them virtual networks as a primitive build virtual data centers so the cloud architects job gets easier application developers don't have to worry about the basics of you know the way networks work our network configuration operations will have a lot more flexibility and the virtual layer of where they can move things around as far as the physical networking layer the problem actually becomes quite a bit simpler but you still have to focus the on the problem of building a physical network so for example when server virtualization came around you didn't like reduce the need for servers you needed more servers and just like the same thing will happen with with network virtualization which is you'll still need physical networks and they're going to probably have to be better physical networks but the problem now is more of how do you build a physical network with high capacity that can support any workload and less about doing all the operational stuff you do today how does an impact we just had chris hoffman from juniper who's now a worker he's been a big security buff a great guest for us but we just were just riffing on the security problems right so give us your perspective on how this new canvas of software-defined virtualization is gonna impact security paradise yeah so I mean I think there are a couple of answers i actually think ultimately the security model is improved honestly so yeah the original work was done with the intelligence community actually the the original funding for nasira came from the intelligence community my background I used to work for the intelligence agencies and when you move everything to software we already have a fundamental security paradigm which is crust consolidation in the hypervisor right and with network virtualization you follow the same paradigm which is you you entrust the hypervisor to enforce things like isolation enforce the security but now you've got a strongly authenticated endpoint there you're not guessing about things but but it requires the security community to evolve with the virtualization community so I think that there's much more of a socialization hurdle more of a social hurdle than a technical hurdle like all of the technology is there to do good security in the cloud I think getting the traditional vendors to evolve their tools into of all they're thinking it's much more difficult so I've got one more thing to add I actually think there's an opportunity to do security in entirely new ways ones that again can transform the industry so for example with virtualization you've got deep semantics into the workloads I mean you're in the hypervisor you can look inside the VMS you know who's using them know what applications they're using guy you could even know what the documents are being sent or or read or passed around and because you have this information at the edge if you virtualize the network as well you can pass this context into the network so now instead of like looking at packets and kind of trying to guess what application there is by looking at traffic you can actually get past like the ground truth information from the hypervisor so I think we have the potential so it's like drastically improved security that's Martine if you look at the networking industry there's lots of companies that have tried to change it in the past when you talk about innovation standards have a lot of times slow things down yep you know there's the legacy thought set you know great respect for ccie s but you know they have their install base in their way of doing things so you know there's there's so many pieces that make up networking and even the first time I saw your solution there's multiple standards and open you know groups working on this so you know how do you guys tease through and work through all of these issues yeah so clearly a very complex and multifarious question so I'm going to I'm going to attack one piece of it and we can go from there one of the primary benefits of actual virtualization like actual virtualization is that what you end up with should look like what you started with right so like if you're fundamentally changing an operational paradigm you're probably not doing virtualization so for example in a network virtualization solution the physical network is still a physical Network and it needs to be managed like a physical network with physical networking tools and in order to be fully virtualized the virtual abstraction I give you if I give you a virtual network that should also look like the networks that you've kind of grown to love as a child right they should have all the counters all the debugging the ability to interpose services right and so from from that standpoint you're still preserving the interfaces that people are used to it says there's more of them so like for example when I talk to a network operator today they're like oh this is confusing I've got virtualization I say actually instead of having one network that's really complicated you've got em and simple networks now you've got a very simple physical Network and if you got any virtual networks and they all all of the same interfaces that you use to manage it however there's one catch and that one catch is is there's an additional bit of information which is how do you map this virtual world to the physical world which happened in compute virtualization as well so like everybody understood a virtual machine everybody understood the physical machine but people weren't entirely sure how you debug the mapping between the two and that's incumbent as US is software providers and solution providers to provide that to provide the ability to to map from this kind of you know like platonic virtual reality down to this kind of gritty physical reality okay so from a standard standpoint you I mean you guys helped invent OpenFlow you guys created the open V switch you're heavily involved in OpenStack Andy there's been a lot of buzz since the acquisition about you know the involvement in OpenStack and yeah yeah kind of God how many people today everything in what's your thoughts on it yeah so let me also teach a tease apart you know two things before I get to that one so in networking standards are really important and like in the way standards work he's got a bunch of people that kind of go and talk about things and they design things they agree on them that's actually quite different than open source right and like their different processes different communities different rules of engagement so let me focus on the open source first then we'll go back to the standards thank you because I perfect just to give you a little bit foreshadowing like I hope the world goes open source not open Stan so can we do to it so but we'll get there right so as far as open source yes so I wrote the first version of open flow I mean it came out of my thesis right the first three employees of nicera created the first craft of open flow and it was it was just something that we wanted to use to control switches right i mean we wrote the first reference implementation the first open flow controller you know we seeded the stanford stuff of course i'm a consulting a faculty at stanford so i was involved there we also are the primary developers behind open V switch it's in the linux kernel you know we've probably put you know many millions of dollars in developing that it's used by competitors and partners alike that's used in many clouds and then we've heavily participated in an OpenStack in particular you know where the Delete on quantum which is the networking portion of OpenStack we've done a lot of development bear so as far as the merger is concerned the acquisitions concerned none of that will change we're fully committed to open V switch to OpenStack will continue and even escalate our contribution there quick quick note on OpenStack i was told that something for folks have actually entered some code into the OpenStack of storage just kind of curious about that so and we touched many areas of OpenStack and again the the networking piece touches everything and you know we do a lot of the development on quantum and we run actually nasira internally randa an openstack cloud for internal dev cloud and we've got thousands of VMs on it that we use it and so we're heavily we're like heavy users and contributors to both OpenStack and linux I mean if you look in Linux we've actually fixed a lot of the veal and issues in the kernel right so like and we're very very involved in open source but we're involved as users right like we don't sell you know linux we don't sell OpenStack but we do believe for to have a vibrant ecosystem is nice to have these tools out there and as we use the tools we fix them and we contribute it back okay what about multi hypervisor environments because that was one of the things that really impressed me about like the open D switch is it really doesn able kind of that that multi hypervisor even more than kind of heterogeneous switches it's the multi hypervisor piece yeah that's right so if you kind of zoom away like I think we've had like a fairly myopic focus in the industry on servers over the last 10 years and it's like if you zoom away from the server to a data center you end up in this realm of heterogeneous technologies multiple cloud management systems multiple hypervisors and so when we came up with our our initial strategy of building a network virtualization layer we knew networks touch everything we must support all of those technologies and so it was like a fundamental tenant of the technology that we might support all hypervisors and physical hardware switches as well because there are workloads that are not july's and so you know open V switch itself which is the V switch that we use it's in sports in kvm bare metal linux it's been ported to bsd it's been ported to other operating systems it's been ported to top-of-rack hardware switches so we can use all of them to do to do network virtualization so mark can I want to ask you about the sufferer define partnering strategy from a technical perspective obviously we're really big believers in open source as well they love that we'd love to think it's great and it's now a business model in the industry so it's great to see all that work as vmware now with you guys in the family there go to other unifying clouds so they took a multiple clouds at this point so you know what would you bring to the table from hyper Microsoft hyper-v environment and other big vendors HP Dell yeah Microsoft what can you bring to the table in working with those guys or are you outgoing are you talking to them and and if you were having those conversations what does what would those conversations be well so the product itself that we're developing and we we do bring to market now we will continue is a network virtualization platform that's multi hypervisor right and so the goal is to have something that you can deploy into any cloud environment regardless of what CMS are running and regardless of what of what hypervisors they're using now we have many many partners whether their system integrators with the solution partners and so you know we don't have any religion on on the type of technologies in play we want to provide the best virtual networking solution in the industry and that's really our primary our primary focus let me ask you about it Trent some trends in the in the tech community in in academia and the research areas obviously at this example just randomly low-level virtual machines that kind of those kinds of shifts are happening could you talk about just what you're tracking right now that your get your eye on in terms of what's going on at some of the top university obviously low-level virtual machines at the University of Illinois and in Chicago so what other areas can you share with us that you monitoring listen this is a great question to ask a nap academic and I'm going to totally disappoint you in that I you know I i I'm on a lot of pcs and I follow a lot of research I mean you know I submit papers you know all the time and like I've mostly lost faith in the academic process on the research side lately which i haven't relevant so in terms of trends no but that's exactly the point I think that there's enough vision to last for a century and like now it's time to do work and if it were up to me we would all be taking these ideas that we've come up with over the last 10 years there's very few new ones in my opinion and we'd be executing like crazy and so well again while i'm on the pcs and while i do review the papers i do submit the papers i think we should all focus on like changing infrastructure into software executing like hell and changing the world that way and so and I don't have a really bad attitude about this especially as abuse or but it's a bad attitude okay we say it we hit it all hang out so final question for me and if she wants to get one more in and don't you can't say the acquisition as the answer what is the biggest surprise that that that you fell out of your chair over the past 24 months around you in the industry in your entrepreneurial venture here now at VMware and it could be like a surprise and this trend didn't happen that happened that you know these are the things that happened it could be good or bad what's the biggest surprise that caught you off guard this year that's 24 months yeah it's a good question I think the one that actually been a little the most shocking is how how difficult is being just very honest is how difficult to manage perception in the industry and if you look at kind of social media and you look at a lot of the buzz in the rags so much of it is generated by non disinterested parties so invested parties and so I think it's possible to be a perfectly good citizen and then get paint in a very negative light or be a very negative citizen and be painted in a very good light and it's been counterintuitive to me how you manage this effectively like almost a dynamic feedback system so for example this year has been an enormous contributor to open source I think we've contributed more than anybody in our space by you know factor of 10 or more we contributed most of the core technologies and often people like well but it's a proprietary solution on the other hand there sometimes we're like okay this is a closer source product people like we should use this here because it's the open solution and so well I think that definitely felt on both sides you know being both open source and close or sometimes it's worked for us and for the wrong reasons sometimes it's not worked for us for the right reasons and so that dynamic has been the least intuitive to me so I'm not sure I fell off my chair but definitely it's been the most surprising yeah and you know and that's what we're trying to solve a SiliconANGLE as we say we're agile media and ultimately with social media the whole media business is changing so we know one of the things that we care about here so that's why we have the qubits we just this is raw data we want to share be provocative be edgy is too it's a data-driven world and we believe the media business is absolutely screwed up beyond all recognition so so because of just lack of fact-checking just old techniques aren't working and but it's the same game right so it's just so things circulate things get branded and we've seen a time and time again I've seen great people show up as like almost painted as criminals yeah so it's just a sad state of reporting and media so would agree with you there okay John so if I if I can have that one last question your machine you know the networking industries is a big community and when you talk about kind of the jobs that people are doing today what's your recommendation to folks out there in the networking industry what should what should they start to you know we'd or you know start playing with to kind of understand where things are going down the line honestly I don't want to say a cliche but I actually really believe this one I think I think networking networks are evolving to become proper systems and proper systems in an end-to-end manner meaning that goes a very well-defined hardware a software layer they all work together and I think the data center is is becoming a large computer and I think the most important thing is to view the industry and that lens meaning you know I would get as much information as I could on how guys like Google or Amazon or Facebook build their data centers and you realize that if you do a cross-section of these things like the Capital savings the operational savings the flexibility of the software like that's changing the world and if it's not changing the world directly by changing infrastructure it's changing the world to the surfaces they deliver and understanding that model in your bones I think is the beacon going forward so if it were me the first thing I do is I really understand why they make those decisions what the benefits are and I would use that to
