It's great to have you back on the program, seeing you in 3d >>It's. It's so great to be here and we get a guest interviewer. So this >>Is >>Fantastic. Fly by. Fantastic. >>So talk to us, what's going on at pure. It's been a while since we had a chance to talk, >>Right. Well, well, besides the fact that it's great to see in person and to be back at a conference and see all of our customers, partners and prospects, you know, pure storage has just been on a tear just for your audience. Many, those who don't follow pure, right? We finished our last year with our Q4 being 41% year over year growth. And in the year, just under 2.2 billion, and then we come outta the gates this year, close our Q1 at 50% year over year, quarter quarterly growth. Have you ever seen a storage company or an infrastructure partner at 2 billion grow at that rate? >>Well, the thing was, was striking was that the acceleration of growth, because, you know, I mean, COVID, there were supply chain issues and you know, you saw that. And then, and we've seen this before at cloud companies, we see actually AWS as accelerated growth. So this is my premise here is you guys are actually becoming a cloud-like company building on top of, of infrastructure going from on-prem to cloud. But we're gonna talk about that. >>This is very much that super cloud premise. Well, >>It is. And, and, but I think it's it's one of the characteristics is you can actually, it, you know, we used to see companies, they go, they'd come out of escape velocity, and then they'd they'd growth would slow. I used to be at IDC. We'd see it. We'd see it. Okay. Down then it'd be single digits. You guys are seeing the opposite. >>It's it's not just our bookings. And by the way, I would be remiss if I didn't remind your audience that our second quarter earnings call is tomorrow. So we'll see how this philosophy and momentum keeps going. See, right. But besides the growth, right? All the external metrics around our business are increasing as well. So our net promoter score increased right at 85.2. We are the gold standard, not just in storage in infrastructure period. Like there's no one close to us, >>85. I mean, that's like, that's a, like apple, >>It's higher than apple than apple. It's apple higher than Tesla. It's higher than AWS shopping. And if you look in like our review of our products, flash rate is the leader in the gardener magic quadrant for, for storage array. It's been there for eight years. Port works is the leader in the GIGO OME radar for native Kubernetes storage three years in a row. Like just, it's great to be at a company that's hitting on all cylinders. You know, particularly at a time that's just got so much change going on in our >>Industry. Yeah. Tremendous amount of change. Talk about the, the VMware partnership from a momentum of velocity perspective what's going on there. And some of the things that you're accelerating. >>Absolutely. So VMware is, is the, the oldest or the longest tenured technology partner that we've had. I'm about to start my 10th year at pure storage. It feels like it was yesterday. When I joined, they were a, an Alliance partner before I joined. And so not to make that about me, but that's just like we built some of the key aspects around our first product, the flash array with VMware workloads in mind. And so we are a, a co-development partner. We've worked with them on a number of projects over years of, of late things that are top of mind is like the evolution of vials, the NV support for NVMe over fabric storage, more recently SRM support for automating Dr. With Viv a deployments, you know, and, and, and then our work around VMware ex extends to not just with VMware, they're really the catalyst for a lot of three way partnerships. So partnerships into our investments in data protection partners. Well, you gotta support V ADP for backing up the VMware space, our partnership within Nvidia, well, you gotta support NVA. I, so they can accelerate bringing those technologies into the enterprise. And so it's it, it's not just a, a, a, you know, unilateral partnership. It's a bidirectional piece because for a lot of customers, VMware's kind of like a touchpoint for managing the infrastructure. >>So how is that changing? Because you you've mentioned, you know, all the, the, the previous days, it was like, okay, let's get, make storage work. Let's do the integration. Let's do the hard work. It was kind of a race for the engineering teams to get there. All the storage companies would compete. And it was actually really good for the industry. Yeah, yeah. Right. Because it, it went from, you know, really complex, to much, much simpler. And now with the port works acquisition, it brings you closer to the whole DevOps scene. And you're seeing now VMware it's with its multi-cloud initiatives, really focusing on, you know, the applications and that, and that layer. So how does that dynamic evolve in terms of the partnership and, and where the focus is? >>So there's always in the last decade or so, right. There's always been some amount of overlap or competing with your partnerships, right. Something in their portfolios they're expanding maybe, or you expand you encroach on them. I think, I think two parts to how I would want to answer your question. The retrospective look V VMware is our number one ISV from a, a partner that we, we turn transactions with. The booking's growth that I shared with you, you could almost say is a direct reflection of how we're growing within that, that VMware marketplace. We are bringing a platform that I think customers feel services their workloads well today and gives them the flexibility of what might come in their cloud tomorrow. So you look at programs like our evergreen one subscription model, where you can deploy a consumption based subscription model. So very cloud-like only pay for what you use on-prem and turn that dial as you need to dial it into a, a cloud or, or multiple clouds. >>That's just one example. Looking forward, look, port works is probably the platform that VMware should have bought because when you look at today's story, right, when kit Culbert shared a, a cross cloud services, right, it was, it was the modern version of what VMware used to say, which was, here's a software defined data center. We're gonna standardize all your dissimilar hardware, another saying software defined management to standardize all your dissimilar clouds. We do that for Kubernetes. We talk about accelerating customers' adoption of Kubernetes by, by allowing developers, just to turn on an enable features, be its security, backup high availability, but we don't do it mono in a, you know, in a, in a homogeneous environment, we allow customers to do it heterogeneously so I can deploy VMware Tansu and connect it to Amazon EKS. I can switch one of those over to red head OpenShift, non disruptively, if I need to. >>Right? So as customers are going on this journey, particularly the enterprise customers, and they're not sure where they're going, we're giving them a platform that standardizes where they want to go. On-prem in the cloud and anywhere in between. And what's really interesting is our latest feature within the port works portfolio is called port works data services, and allows customers to deploy databases on demand. Like, install it, download the binaries. You have a cus there, you got a database, you got a database. You want Cassandra, you want Mongo, right? Yeah. You know, and, and for a lot of enterprise customers, who've kind of not, not know where to don't know where to start with port works. We found that to be a great place where they're like, I have this need side of my infrastructure. You can help me reduce cost time. Right. And deliver databases to teams. And that's how they kick off their Tansu journey. For example. >>It's interesting. So port works was the enabler you mentioned maybe VMware should above. Of course they had to get the value out of, out of pivotal. >>Understood. >>So, okay. Okay. So that, so how subsequent to the port works acquisition, how has it changed the way that you guys think about storage and how your customers are actually deploying and managing storage? >>Sure. So you touched base earlier on what was really great about the cloud and VMware was this evolution of simplifying storage technologies, usually operational functions, right? Making things simpler, more API driven, right. So they could be automated. I think what we're seeing customers do to today is first off, there's a tremendous rise in everyone wanting to do every customer, not every customer, a large portion of the customer bases, wanting to acquire technology on as OPEX. And it, I think it's really driven by like eliminate technical debt. I sign a short term agreement, our short, our shortest commitment's nine months. If we don't deliver around what we say, you walk away from us in nine months. Like you, you couldn't do that historically. Furthermore, I think customers are looking for the flexibility for our subscriptions, you know, more from between on-prem and cloud, as I shared earlier, is, is been a, a, a big driver in that space. >>And, and lastly, I would, would probably touch on our environmental and sustainability efforts. You saw this morning, Ragu in the keynote touch on what was it? Zero carbon consumption initiative, or ZCI my apologies to the veer folks. If I missed VO, you know, we've had, we've had sustainability into our products since day one. I don't know if you saw our inaugural ESG report that came out about 60 days ago, but the bottom line is, is, is our portfolio reduces the, the power directly consumed by storage race by up to 80%. And another aspect to look at is that 97% of all of the products that we sold in the last six years are still in the market today. They're not being put into, you know, into, to recycle bins and whatnot, pure storage's goal by the end of this decade is to further drive the efficiency of our platforms by another 66%. And so, you know, it's an ambitious goal, but we believe it's >>Important. Yeah. I was at HQ earlier this month, so I actually did see it. So, >>Yeah. And where is sustainability from a differentiation perspective, but also from a customer requirements perspective, I'm talking to a lot of customers that are putting that requirement when they're doing RFPs and whatnot on the vendors. >>I think we would like to all, and this is a free form VO comment here. So my apologies, but I think we'd all like to, to believe that we can reduce the energy consumption in the planet through these efforts. And in some ways maybe we can, what I fear in the technology space that I think we've all and, and many of your viewers have seen is there's always more tomorrow, right? There's more apps, more vendors, more offerings, more, more, more data to store. And so I think it's really just an imperative is you've gotta continue to be able to provide more services or store more data in this in yesterday's footprint tomorrow. A and part of the way they get to is through a sustainability effort, whether it's in chip design, you know, storage technologies, et cetera. And, and unfortunately it's, it's, it's something that organizations need to adopt today. And, and we've had a number of wins where customers have said, I thought I had to evacuate this data center. Your technology comes in and now it buys me more years of time in this in infrastructure. And so it can be very strategic to a lot of vendors who think their only option is like data center evacuation. >>So I don't want to, I, I don't wanna set you up, but I do want to have the super cloud conversation. And so let's go, and you, can you, you been around a long time, your, your technical, or you're more technical than I am, so we can at least sort of try to figure it out together when I first saw you guys. I think Lisa, so you and I were at, was it, when did you announce a block storage for AWS? The, was that 2019 >>Cloud block store? I believe block four years >>Ago. Okay. So 20 18, 20 18, 20 18. Okay. So we were there at, at accelerate at accelerate and I said, oh, that's interesting. So basically if I, if I go back there, it was, it was a hybrid model. You, you connecting your on-prem, you were, you were using, I think, priority E C two, you know, infrastructure to get high performance and connecting the two. And it was a singular experience yeah. Between on-prem and AWS in a pure customer saw pure. Right. Okay. So that was the first time I started to think about Supercloud. I mean, I think thought about it in different forms years ago, but that was the first actual instantiation. So my, my I'm interested in how that's evolved, how it's evolving, how it's going across clouds. Can you talk just conceptually about how that architecture is, is morphing? >>Sure. I just to set the expectations appropriately, right? We've got, we've got a lot of engineering work that that's going on right now. There's a bunch of stuff that I would love to share with you that I feel is right around the corner. And so hopefully we'll get across the line where we're at today, where we're at today. So the connective DNA of, of flash array, OnPrem cloud block store in the cloud, we can set up for, for, you know, what we call active. Dr. So, so again, customers are looking at these arrays is a, is a, is a pair that allows workloads to be put into the, put into the cloud or, or transferred between the cloud. That's kind of like your basic building, you know, blocking tackling 1 0 1. Like what do I do for Dr. Example, right? Or, or gimme an easy button to, to evacuate a data center where we've seen a, a lot of growth is around cloud block store and cloud block store really was released as like a software version of our hardware, Ray on-prem and it's been, and, and it hasn't been making the news, but it's been continually evolving. >>And so today the way you would look at cloud block store is, is really bringing enterprise data services to like EBS for, for AWS customers or to like, you know, is Azure premium disc for Azure users. And what do I mean by enterprise data services? It's, it's the, the, the way that large scale applications are managed, on-prem not just their performance and their avail availability considerations. How do I stage the, the development team, the sandbox team before they patch? You know, what's my cyber protection, not just data protection, how, how am I protected from a cyber hack? We bring all those capabilities to those storage platforms. And the, the best result is because of our data reduction technologies, which was critical in reducing the cost of flash 10 years ago, reduces the cost of the cloud by 50% or more and pays for the, for pays more than pays for our software of cloud block store to enable these enterprise data services, to give all these rapid capabilities like instant database, clones, instant, you know, recovery from cyber tech, things of that nature. >>Do customers. We heard today that cloud chaos are, are customers saying so, okay, you can run an Azure, you can run an AWS fine. Are customers saying, Hey, we want to connect those islands. Are you hearing that from customers or is it still sort of still too early? >>I think it's still too early. It doesn't mean we don't have customers who are very much in let's buy, let me buy some software that will monitor the price of my cloud. And I might move stuff around, but there's also a cost to moving, right? The, the egress charges can add up, particularly if you're at scale. So I don't know how much I seen. And even through the cloud days, how much I saw the, the notion of workloads moving, like kind of in the early days, like VMO, we thought there might be like a, is there gonna be a fall of the moon computing, you know, surge here, like, you know, have your workload run where power costs are lower. We didn't really see that coming to fruition. So I think there is a, is a desire for customers to have standardization because they gain the benefits of that from an operational perspective. Right. Whether they put that in motion to move workloads back and forth. I think >>So let's say, let's say to be determined, let let's say they let's say they don't move them because your point you knows too expensive, but, but, but, but you just, I think touched on it is they do want some kind of standard in terms of the workflow. Yep. You you're saying you're, you're starting to see demand >>Standard operating practices. Okay. >>Yeah. SOPs. And if they're, if they're big into pure, why wouldn't they want that? If assuming they have, you know, multiple clouds, which a lot of customers do. >>I, I, I I'll assure with you one thing that the going back to like basic primitives and I touched it touched on it a minute ago with data reduction. You have customers look at their, their storage bills in the cloud and say, we're gonna reduce that by half or more. You have a conversation >>Because they can bring your stack yeah. Into the cloud. And it's got more maturity than what you'd find from a cloud company, cloud >>Vendor. Yeah. Just data. Reduction's not part of block storage today in the cloud. So we've got an advantage there that we, we bring to bear. Yeah. >>So here we are at, at VMware Explorer, the first one of this name, and I love the theme, the center of the multi-cloud universe. Doesn't that sound like a Marvel movie. I feel like there should be superheroes walking around here. At some point >>We got Mr. Fantastic. Right here. We do >>Gone for, I dunno it >>Is. But a lot of, a lot of news this morning in the keynote, you were in the keynote, what are some of the things that you're hearing from VMware and what excites you about this continued evolution of the partnership with pure >>Yeah. Great point. So I, I think I touched on the, the two things that really caught my attention. Obviously, you know, we've got a lot of investment in V realize it was now kind of rebranded as ay, that, you know, I think we're really eager to see if we can help drive that consumption a bit higher, cuz we believe that plays into our favor as a vendor. We've we've we have over a hundred templates for the area platform right now to, you know, automation templates, whether it's, you know, levels set your platform, you know, automatically move workloads, deploy on demand. Like just so, so again, I think the focus there is very exciting for us, obviously when they've got a new release, like vSphere eight, that's gonna drive a lot of channel behaviors. So we've gotta get our, you know, we're a hundred percent channel company. And so we've gotta go get our channel ready because with about half of the updates of vSphere is, is hardware refresh. And so, you know, we've gotta be, be prepared for that. So, you know, some of the excitements about just being how to find more points in the market to do more business together. >>All right. Exciting cover the grounds. Right. I mean, so, okay. You guys announce earnings tomorrow, so we can't obviously quiet period, but of course you're not gonna divulge that anyway. So we'll be looking for that. What other catalysts are out there that we should be paying attention to? You know, we got, we got reinvent coming up in yep. In November, you guys are obviously gonna be there in, in a big way. Accelerate was back this year. How was accelerate >>Accelerate in was in Los Angeles this year? Mm. We had great weather. It was a phenomenal venue, great event, great partner event to kick it off. We happened to, to share the facility with the president and a bunch of international delegates. So that did make for a little bit of some logistic securities. >>It was like the summit of the Americas. I, I believe I'm recalling that correctly, but it was fantastic. Right. You, you get, you get to bring the customers out. You get to put a bunch of the engineers on display for the products that we're building. You know, one of the high, you know, two of the highlights there were, we, we announced our new flash blade S so, you know, higher, more performant, more scalable version of our, our scale and object and file platform with that. We also announced the, the next generation of our a I R I, which is our AI ready, AI ready infrastructure within video. So think of it like converged infrastructure for AI workloads. We're seeing tremendous growth in that unstructured space. And so, you know, we obviously pure was funded around block storage, a lot around virtual machines. The data growth is in unstructured, right? >>We're just seeing, we're seeing, you know, just tons of machine learning, you know, opportunities, a lot of opportunities, whether we're looking at health, life sciences, genome sequencing, medical imaging, we're seeing a lot of, of velocity in the federal space. You know, things, I can't talk about a lot of velocity in the automotive space. And so just, you know, from a completeness of platform, you know, flat flash blade is, is really addressing a need really kind of changing the market from NAS as like tier two storage or object is tier three to like both as a tier one performance candidate. And now you see applications that are supporting running on top of object, right? All your analytics platforms are on an object today, Absolut. So it's a, it's a whole new world. >>Awesome. And Pierce also what I see on the website, a tech Fest going on, you guys are gonna be in Seoul, Mexico city in Singapore in the next week alone. So customers get the chance to be able to in person talk with those execs once again. >>Yeah. We've been doing the accelerate tech tech fests, sorry about that around the globe. Um Congratulations on your 15th birthday of E C two. You get the keys to the kingdom of one of the hottest products. The most important product you look at. I look at our billets. Ec two is the highest, it's always the best everyone focuses on. It's the compute a lot of other goodness with amazon cloud. Thanks for coming on. >>Thank you. Thanks for having me. >>So, can you break down the graviton two processor overview? Why is custom Silicon important and why should architects and developers understand the opportunity with graviton to these are the other opportunities within 80 bucks. What's the, what's the magic do it we should that they think about as the architect their cloud. >>Yeah. So, I mean, I think why it's important is what you said like so much uh the workloads that they're running at the end of the day is running on EC two, whether it's running on Ec two directly or running on one of the other AWS services that's built on a C two and when you have, when you're able to, when we're able to innovate and deliver a very significant price performance advantage, not just lowers their costs. So like there, It's hardly a day of industry where you're able to go and do a pretty simple migration and get a 40% price performance improvement and that's huge and I think that's why this is, you know, raising a lot of interest. Is that um, customers, I found it relatively easy to go and do this migration and get that benefit. >>That's awesome mirage. I gotta ask you ec two offers more than 400 instant types with different combinations of compute memory, networking and storage, which is obviously the backbone of the cloud. A lot of people that are coming in learning about clouds, what does it mean that there's all these instances that because it's just more combinations, different workloads, why 400 instance types? What does that mean for someone learning about clouds? Does it mean anything to you actually? Would you explain the difference of instance types of 400 of them? >>Yeah. So, I mean when you think about an instance type, it's essentially configuration of a virtual machine, there's a certain amount of memory, there's a certain amount of processing power. Uh there could be a certain amount of disk and workloads, uh, the different ratios of these uh, dimensions, these characteristics. So by offering selection across a wide variety of instances were really able to optimize the compute that particular workload needs. The customers could essentially uh, increase their performance and have a more optimized price for what they want to get done. So ultimately, that's what that's what it's about having the right form factor for a given workload and the more configurations that we have, the more we're able to tune for those workloads. >>It's like having a driver riding a car you want the driver type to match the road, match the engine. So the instance has to match the profile of the app, the workload and kind of, and is that kind of where you're getting at getting met? You can do that. >>Yeah. And you know, and one of the things that we're also investing in at the same time as tools to enable customers to realize and learn what the right instance is. So, you know, we launched about a year ago uh capability called compute optimizer that lets customers look at their workloads, you know, in flight essentially and make recommendations saying, hey, instead of this instance, you know, you could Move to um this other instance type and save 50% or you know, as an example. So, um, you know, part of it, creating the selection and the other part of it is creating the tools. So customers, do you know what the right fit is for them so that they can really optimize their thin >>Well Roger, I really preach this is going to ask me anything guru question, but here's the simple one. What is gravitas to, at the end of the day when someone asks you what is graviton too? >>Yeah. So I mean grandma can do is a processor, it's a chip, it's a CPU um and so what that means essentially is and it's an arm. Basic. So um, you know, with, with are just like you have intel and AMG processors, these are the, the circuitry and the computer that does the work. Right. And um with, with Gravitas on we support arm which is a different architecture set but one that has been around long enough and it's pretty ubiquitous across mobile devices and servers now. So the operating systems that you know, you know all the Linux operating system, the tools that you know, they all work and are able to run on Graviton too. So this means that when you have applications, you can very easily take it from the same AMG or intel X 86 platform and move it over and just get the efficiencies that gravity to offers with lower power envelope and higher performance >>there it is many master class here at raj. Pie Vice President Ec two product management laying down the graviton to knowledge and for folks learning about cloud and architects really want to know the difference. It's a 40% performance improvement, lower power envelope, 20% less than cost. I believe something those range about right about in the same territory there. This is the Cube virtual. I'm your host, John Ferrier normally were there in person, a lot of great face to face, but not this year with the pandemic. We're doing a lot of remote, and he's got a great great content guest here. Rebecca Weekly, who's the senior director and senior principal engineer at for Intel's hyper scale strategy and execution. Rebecca. Thanks for coming on. A lot of great news going on around Intel on AWS. Thanks for coming on. >>Thanks for having me done. >>So Tell us first, what's your role in Intel? Because obviously compute being reimagined. It's going to the next level, and we're seeing the sea change that with Cove in 19, it's putting a lot of pressure on faster, smaller, cheaper. This is the cadence of Moore's law. This is kind of what we need. More horsepower. This is big theme of the event. What's what's your role in intel? >>Oh, well, my team looks after a joint development for product and service offerings with Intel and A W s. So we've been working with AWS for more than 14 years. Um, various projects collaborations that deliver a steady beat of infrastructure service offerings for cloud applications. So Data Analytics, ai ml high performance computing, Internet of things, you name it. We've had a project or partnership, several in those the main faces on thanks to that relationship. You know, today, customers Committee choose from over 220 different instance types on AWS global footprint. So those feature Intel processors S, P. J s ai accelerators and more, and it's been incredibly rewarding an incredibly rewarding partnership. >>You know, we've been covering Intel since silicon angle in the Cube was formed 10 years ago, and this is what we've been to every reinvent since the first one was kind of a smaller one. Intel's always had a big presence. You've always been a big partner, and we really appreciate the contribution of the industry. Um, you've been there with with Amazon. From the beginning, you've seen it grow. You've seen Amazon Web services become, ah, big important player in the enterprise. What's different this year from your perspective. >>Well, 2020 has been a challenging here for sure. I was deeply moved by the kinds of partnership that we were able to join forces on within telling a W s, uh, to really help those communities across the globe and to address all the different crisis is because it it hasn't just been one. This has been, ah, year of of multiple. Um, sometimes it feels like rolling crisis is So When the pandemic broke out in India in March of this year, there were schools that were forced to close, obviously to slow the spread of the disease. And with very little warning, a bunch of students had to find themselves in remote school out of school. Uh, so the Department of Education in India engaged career launcher, which is a partner program that we also sponsor and partner with, and it really they had to come up with a distance learning solutions very quickly, uh, that, you know, really would provide Children access to quality education while they were remote. For a long as they needed to be so Korean launcher turned to intel and to a W s. We helped design infrastructure solution to meet this challenge and really, you know, within the first, the first week, more than 100 teachers were instructing classes using that online portal, and today it serves more than 165,000 students, and it's going to accommodate more than a million over the fear. Um, to me, that's just a perfect example of how Cove it comes together with technology, Thio rapidly address a major shift in how we're approaching education in the times of the pandemic. Um, we also, you know, saw kind of a climate change set of challenges with the wildfires that occurred this year in 2020. So we worked with a partner, Roman, as well as a partner who is a partner with AWS end until and used the EEC Thio C five instances that have the second Gen Beyond available processors. And we use them to be able to help the Australian researchers who were dealing with that wildfire increase over 60 fold the number of parallel wildfire simulations that they could perform so they could do better forecasting of who needed to leave their homes how they could manage those scenarios. Um, and we also were able toe work with them on a project to actually thwart the extinction of the Tasmanian Devils. Uh, in also in Australia. So again, that was, you know, an HPC application. And basically, by moving that to the AWS cloud and leveraging those e c two instances, we were able to take their analysis time from 10 days to six hours. And that's the kind of thing that makes the cloud amazing, right? We work on technology. We hope that we get thio, empower people through that technology. But when you can deploy that technology a cloud scale and watch the world's solve problems faster, that has made, I would say 2020 unique in the positivity, right? >>Yeah. You don't wanna wish this on anyone, but that's a real upside for societal change. I mean, I love your passion on that. I think this is a super important worth calling out that the cloud and the cloud scale With that kind of compute power and differentiation, you gets faster speed to value not just horsepower, but speed to value. This is really important. And it saved lives that changes lives. You know, this is classic change. The world kind of stuff, and it really is on center stage on full display with Cove. I really appreciate, uh, you making that point? It's awesome. Now with that, I gotta ask you, as the strategist for hyper scale intel, um, this is your wheelhouse. You get the fashion for the cloud. What kind of investments are you making at Intel To make more advancements in the clock? You take a minute, Thio, share your vision and what intel is working on? >>Sure. I mean, obviously were known more for our semiconductor set of investments. But there's so much that we actually do kind of across the cloud innovation landscape, both in standards, open standards and bodies to enable people to work together across solutions across the world. But really, I mean, even with what we do with Intel Capital, right, we're investing. We've invested in a bunch of born in the cloud start up, many of whom are on top of AWS infrastructure. Uh, and I have found that to be a great source of insights, partnerships, you know, again how we can move the needle together, Thio go forward. So, in the space of autonomous learning and adopt is one of the start ups we invested in. And they've really worked to use methodologies to improve European Health Co network monitoring. So they were actually getting a ton of false positive running in their previous infrastructure, and they were able to take it down from 50 k False positive the day to 50 using again a I on top of AWS in the public cloud. Um, using obviously and a dog, you know, technology in the space of a I, um we've also seen Capsule eight, which is an amazing company that's enabling enterprisers enterprises to modernize and migrate their workloads without compromising security again, Fully born in the cloud able to run on AWS and help those customers migrate to the public cloud with security, we have found them to be an incredible partner. Um, using simple voice commands on your on your smartphone hypersonic is another one of the companies that we've invested in that lets business decision makers quickly visualized insects insight from their disparate data sources. So really large unstructured data, which is the vast majority of data stored in the world that is exploding. Being able to quickly discern what should we do with this. How should we change something about our company using the power of the public cloud? I'm one of the last ones that I absolutely love to cover kind of the wide scope of the waves. That cloud is changing the innovation landscape, Um, Model mine, which is basically a company that allows people thio take decades of insights out of the mainframe data and do something with it. They actually use Amazon's cloud Service, the cloud storage service. So they were able Teoh Teik again. Mainframe data used that and be able to use Amazon's capabilities. Thio actually create, you know, meaningful insights for business users. So all of those again are really exciting. There's a bunch of information on the Intel sponsor channel with demos and videos with those customer stories and many, many, many more. Using Amazon instances built on Intel technology, >>you know that Amazon has always been in about startup born in the cloud. You mentioned that Intel has always been investing with Intel Capital, um, generations of great investments. Great call out there. Can you tell us more about what, uh, Amazon technology about the new offerings and Amazon has that's built on Intel because, as you mentioned at the top of the interview, there's been a long, long standing partnership since inception, and it continues. Can you take a minute to explain some of the offerings built on the Intel technology that Amazon's offering? >>Well, I've always happened to talk about Amazon offerings on Intel products. That's my day job. You know, really, we've spent a lot of time this year listening to our customer feedback and working with Amazon to make sure that we are delivering instances that are optimized for fastest compute, uh, better virtual memory, greater storage access, and that's really being driven by a couple of very specific workloads. So one of the first that we are introducing here it reinvents is the n five the n instant, and that's really ah, high frequency, high speed, low Leighton see network variants of what was, you know, the traditional Amazon E. C two and five. Um, it's powered by a second Gen Intel scalable processors, The Cascade late processors and really these have the highest all court turbo CPU performance from the on scalable processors in the club, with a frequency up to 4.5 gigahertz. That is really exciting for HPC work clothes, uh, for gaining for financial applications. Simulation modeling applications thes are ones where you know, automation, Um, in the automotive space in the aerospace industries, energy, Telkom, all of them can really benefit from that super low late and see high frequency. So that's really what the M five man is all about, um, on the br to others that we've introduced here today and that they are five beats and that is that can utilize up thio 60 gigabits per second of Amazon elastic block storage and really again that bandwidth and the 260 I ops that it can deliver is great for large relational databases. So the database file systems kind of workload. This is really where we are super excited. And again, this is built on Cascade Lake. The 2nd 10. Yeah, and it takes It takes advantage of many different aspects of how we're optimizing in that processor. So we were excited to partner with customers again using E. B s as well as various other solutions to ensure that data ingestion times for applications are reduced and they can see the delivery to what you were mentioning before right time to results. It's all about time to results on the last one is t three e. N. 33 e n is really the new D three instant. It's again on the Alexa Cascade Lake. We offer those for high density with high density local hard drive storage so very cost optimized but really allowing you to have significantly higher network speed and disk throughput. So very cost optimized for storage applications that seven x more storage capacity, 80% lower costs given terabytes of storage compared to the previous B two instances. So we will really find that that would be ideal for workloads in distributed and clustered file system, Big data and analytics. Of course, you need a lot of capacity on high capacity data lakes. You know, normally you want to optimize a day late for performance, but if you need tons of capacity, you need to walk that line. And I think the three and really will help you do that. And and of course, I would be absolutely remiss to not mention that last month we announced the Amazon Web Services Partnership with us on an Intel select solution, which is the first, you know, cloud Service provider to really launching until select solution there. Um, and it's an HPC space, So this is really about in high performance computing. Developers can spend weeks for months researching, you know, to manage compute storage network software configuration options. It's not a field that has gone fully cloud native by default, and those recipes air still coming together. So this is where the AWS parallel cluster solution using. It's an Intel Select solution for simulation and modeling on top of AWS. We're really excited about how it's going to make it easier for scientists and researchers like the ones I mentioned before, but also I t administrators to deploy and manage and just automatically scale those high performance computing clusters in Aws Cloud. >>Wow, that's a lot. A lot of purpose built e mean, no, you guys were really nailing. I mean, low late and see you got stories, you got density. I mean, these air use cases where there's riel workloads that require that kind of specialty and or e means beyond general purpose. Now, you're kind of the general purpose of the of the use case. This is what cloud does this is amazing. Um, final comments this year. I want to get your thoughts because you mentioned Cloud Service provider. You meant to the select program, which is an elite thing, right? Okay, we're anticipating Mawr Cloud service providers. We're expecting Mawr innovation around chips and silicon and software. This is just getting going. It feels like to me, it's just the pulse is different this year. It's faster. The cadence has changed. As a strategist, What's your final comments? Where is this all going? Because this is pretty different. Its's not what it was pre code, but I feel like this is going to continue transforming and being faster. What's your thoughts? >>Absolutely. I mean, the cloud has been one of the biggest winners in a time of, you know, incredible crisis for our world. I don't think anybody has come out of this time without understanding remote work, you know, uh, remote retail, and certainly a business transformation is inevitable and required thio deliver in a disaster recovery kind of business continuity environment. So the cloud will absolutely continue on continue to grow as we enable more and more people to come to it. Um, I personally, I couldn't be more excited than to be able Thio leverage a long term partnership, incredible strength of that insulin AWS partnership and these partnerships with key customers across the ecosystem. We do so much with SVS Os Vives s eyes MSP, you know, name your favorite flavor of acronym, uh, to help end users experience that digital transformation effectively, whatever it might be. And as we learn, we try and take those learnings into any environment. We don't care where workloads run. We care that they run best on our architecture. Er and that's really what we're designing. Thio. And when we partner between the software, the algorithm on the hardware, that's really where we enable the best and user demand and the end use their time to incite and use your time to market >>best. >>Um, so that's really what I'm most excited about. That's obviously what my team does every day. So that's of course, what I'm gonna be most excited about. Um, but that's certainly that's that's the future that you see. And I think it is a bright and rosy one. Um, you know, I I won't say things I'm not supposed to say, but certainly do be sure to tune into the Cube interview with It's on. And you know, also Chatan, who's the CEO of Havana and obviously shaken, is here at A W s, a Z. They talk about some exciting new projects in the AI face because I think that is when we talk about the software, the algorithms and the hardware coming together, the specialization of compute where it needs to go to help us move forward. But also, the complexity of managing that heterogeneity at scale on what that will take and how much more we need to do is an industry and as partners to make that happen. Um, that is the next five years of managing. You know how we are exploding and specialized hardware. I'm excited about that, >>Rebecca. Thank you for your great insight there and thanks for mentioning the Cube interviews. And we've got some great news coming. We'll be breaking that as it gets announced. The chips in the Havana labs will be great stuff. I wouldn't be remiss if I didn't call out the intel. Um, work hard, play hard philosophy. Amazon has a similar approach. I'm John for your host. We are the Cube virtual not there in person, but we're doing remote, as is a W s. Although there there on stage live. And we're here with Dave Brown, Vice President of the Sea, to compute. Great to see you again. Great keynote last night, kicking off everything for the opening night. Great stuff. >>Yeah, well, John, it's always good to be on the Cuban. Thanks for having me back. >>You know, you're in the hot seat these days in the sense of there's so much going on. I mean, Andy, that could do a three week announcement. Keynote. It was like in three hours of nonstop you take a break to go The bathroom. You missed two announcements, right? So, so much going on. You opened up reinvent 2020 with your announcement ec2 of mac instances. And there was a ton of compute. And the theme was really you know, reinventing and reimagining compute both. I want to get into that. But let's start with the hard news. Tell me about the Mac instances. Um, you had a great use case there, That kind of illustrated in your talk. But where is this coming from? It's obviously Mac developers are big, but is this market something that you guys saw from customers or was a necessity? Take us through the thinking around the Mac instance. Easy to for Mac instances, um are going for >>absolutely absolutely So I mean me personally Matthews, a longtime Matthews that we've often thought about. Could we ever bring Mac OS to AWS? Right This thing we've spoken about on and off for many, many years and, you know, it was about a year and a half about two years ago. You know, we're always hearing new use cases from customers, and that's kind of what we're doing. So we're saying what a customer is trying to do that we don't support today, and how would we support them in that? And we started a year from customers that they have been able to successfully migrate all of the AWS workloads to AWS. So most of the server workloads to AWS and then they've got this Mac bold workload that they just weren't able to bring to us. We just didn't support Max into. It was a great example who I had on stage with me last night where you know, they over the last couple of years have been moving Ah, lot of their workloads to AWS. And and then they had these Mac money sitting around that they had to manage themselves. And so we said, could we actually do this? And so that was the one thing the customer ask. And the other thing that we realized was with the nitro system in the work that we've been doing there over the last, you know, six years, seven years since 2012, Really? And just where we are from the From nitro system point of view, we were able to wrap a Mac money without making any changes to it with nitro cards plugging a FireWire to the thunderbolt port and and and actually control that device. And so it means that you get the best of Apple hardware, which is what Apple's all about is the hard way that they make and the way that their software works with it. together with the nitric system and the cards around that inte integrating with the rest of AWS. So we're giving you, you know, high speed secure networking. We're giving you great access to elastic block store Was just integrates natively into the magma Nias? Well, a So we realized that the technology was there, the customer asked, was there and then obviously went to Apple and worked with them very closely to make it happen. And so that's kind of how it all came together. And I was incredibly excited to announce it last night. And the feedback today has just been amazing. A lot of excitement. >>Yeah, take me through the use case because, you know, obviously there's two trends going on. There's custom chips and server list kind of thing happening where you guys, I mean, really doing a good job of the eye as layer, innovating there and then platform as a service. All that software on top. I totally get that. You could see that happening. Chips custom ships to Intel, A, M, D. And others. Now you got Mac hardware. Where's the innovation use case because one would start would say, Hey, why don't you care about whether it's Mac hardware or not. Because I'm server lists. I should be programming the infrastructure actually be getting compute generically. Where does the Mac tying come in? Because that's the first question I was thinking of was, I'm a Mac user. I love Mac, but I'm also got some windows actually going on now. And ultimately, do I really care if it's compute? What's your reaction to that? Yeah, >>absolutely. I mean, if you look at Apple's ecosystem today, right, they have millions of applications in the APP store. They have 28 million developers worldwide, actually building those applications just incredible. And many of those applications, all these millions in the In the APP store itself, there's many more applications that are both by enterprises and companies, right? We have an application that we use internally at Amazon is available on my phone. That's not in the APP store, and you know, many companies are doing that and to build applications for the ecosystem, they have to be built on Mac hardware. And that's just how Apple works, right? So if you wanna build for iPad or iPhone or even Apple TV and Apple watch, you have to build those applications on a Mac. And so what we see companies doing is, you know, the old develop a meme off. Well, it works on my computer, right when you build something, you don't wanna be bullied on your local laptop for production. So they typically have a fleet of machines that they either under somebody's desk or in a data center somewhere that they use for for building these Mac applications. And so it's not possible to build a Mac application on anything other than a Mac itself. And we when we looked at it, we really didn't feel that virtualization made sense, right? Apple? I mean, they have some some virtualization that they're able to do within Mac OS itself. But if you think about how do we solve the customer use case, it's really bringing apple hardware too easy to to solve the problem and giving customers that exactly same exact same experience that they have on prep. And if you look into it like that, models just worked right. We gave them better access. Uh, you know, they've been using that data which you normally say, Hey, don't don't run production workloads on a beta. But you know, I found out if I interview with the BPS at Intuit critique that they've actually moved 80% of their production pulled wear clothes too easy to already to run on the Mac instances. And so that, and that's in the space of two months. And so, just as seamless ability to move because it's the same hardware is kind of what we were going >>after. Great, thanks for sharing that and say, one thing I wanna point out is Mac does have their own chips as well. They're going custom chips. Amazon's going custom chips. And I think I think you nailed what I was trying to understand, which is this developer community for Mac. And there's some things that are purpose built for Mac devices. So on Mac ecosystem, get the marketplace as well as you know, that that was the hardware PCs and devices, and they're only doing more and more. So this brings me to the i o t. Um, piece of it, because Apple does make devices that people wear and I watch is, um, iPhones. I mean, they're not computers anymore. They're everything. So this kind of brings up the edge conversation. So whether it's an iPhone or a five G in a Metro or I'm a stadium watching a football game and there's some sensor camera vision industrial thing there, this is the new normal. This is where you guys are kind of eating, eating up the software side that that business, because there's new capabilities here. Can you explain how compute he's, particularly C two gets to the edges because no one wants to move data around. They wanna move, compute, not data, because data is expensive and it's and it's fat. So we we talked about that we keep on years ago, but you gotta move. Compute. So how does that work Take us through your vision? >>Absolutely. And this is This is a massively growing area for us. I mean, you mentioned Apple's new M one silicon Apple silicon that they just launched a swell, and we're super excited about Apple's been doing there. We've been doing the same thing with our grab. It's on two processor and really saving customers. An incredible amount on price performance. Tried customers moving and getting 40% improvement and price performance just by moving to grab it on too. It's just incredible. Um, in terms of the edge, you know, we started this journey. We started this journey quite some time ago and bringing, you know, Lambda functions to cloudwatch and things like that. How do we bring compute to the edge? We took a look at five G, which I think it's gonna feel a lot of this right if if we look at our cell phones today was actually just talking to the Apple team yesterday with the iPhone, only came out, you know, 13 years ago. It's kind of amazing to think just how much progress we've had and what four g did for the device that's in our pocket in terms of, you know, just how much we rely on that today and what we get. Well, five g is just a step function in both in terms of latency, but also in terms of throughput. And so, you know, one of the projects we announced last year with Verizon and we now Andy announced this morning we're also gonna be rolling out with Katy D I and SK Telecom and Vodafone next year. Um is a project always like that brings aws compute to the edge of the telco network. And so with Verizon, we now have eight locations around the U. S. Where we have AWS compute capacity. And what I mean by that is literally C five instances uh, G four GPU instances for customers that want to do influence and graphics processing on the edge. And that's embedded into the five G network on DSO customers. You know, we've got a number of customers that are doing a lot of interesting things with five G in the sports area, where they have five G cameras that are, you know, submitted directly to wavelength. We no longer need to drive a truck to a stadium to record a game. You just have five G cameras, um, to, you know, automated factories where they doing robotics in factories and yet really low latency. And they don't want the computer, the factory they wanted in five G and so just exciting area for us. That's growing really, really quickly. Thea Other thing we did is obviously with local zones. We launched our first local zones in L a X last year, Los Angeles on that's being used by the movie industry, so you know right now is a lot of exciting up and running off the covert and shut down for a period of time and filming the next release of all of our favorite episodes and across all of these various streaming platforms. And a lot of that work is actually the post production is being done on on AWS on G four instances within the Los Angeles region. So, you know, very low agency for colorization animation, special effects, all that sort of things happening there. What we heard from a lot of customers was they loved outposts as well, which is our offering to put a server into a data center. And you heard from riot games in Andy's Keynote, where they actually bought a number of outposts and put them all over the U. S. And also other places of the world to really lower the Leighton see for their latest game. And so what Andy also just announced is the availability off three additional local zones. So Atlanta, Miami and Houston Sorry, Boston Miami in Houston available today, and then additional 12 available local zones next year, and what that does is that sort of spreads AWS capacity compute capacity at the edge in all of our major metropolitan hubs all of their capacities on the AWS backbone as well, but brings customers that low latency connectivity that they're looking for. Gaming developers were, you know, every every millisecond counts in terms of gameplay on so super excited to be going after that use case, which I think, you know, it's difficult to tell what the next 10 years is gonna be like. But I think Layton's he's gonna have a big part to play in the types of applications we see on our phones going forward. >>Great stuff, final question for you as we wrap up, obviously with virtualization with virtualization. But you know, the cove it is. And he pointed out, People are gonna change, is gonna be winners and losers. He kind of clearly pointed out, But the people who do lean into the cloud who have been on the cloud or taking advantage of the tail winds of cove in because of the capabilities there are two bills air higher, and you should be happy for that. But they're also gonna have more demand for you to say, Hey, I need more services. So How do you speak to those people who are leaning in who are leveraging, more, compute? What should they be looking at? What kinds of services should be connecting into compute? How should they be thinking about the future of compute so that they can take advantage of those capabilities? The lower costs, higher performance? What things are complementary for these customers as they come in, not toe dip in the water kind of things against really driving. And what do they need? >>Yeah, absolutely. And this has been a big focus on us. You know, things has bean, as I cover in my keynote, which leadership session that I'm doing tomorrow Wednesday. You know, a lot of this year has been helping customers through covert and what covert is meant for their business. Whether that is cost savings for many of them or whether it's just demand, you know that they've never experienced are expected before. I mean, we've been incredibly hard at work in servicing those customers, right? I actually catch up with Scott Sikora. In my keynote. He leads our capacity team. We talked through what it meant and how we actually provided the capacity that our customers needed during Colbert Times. But for a customer moving to us, the first thing is obviously we wanna find ways to make them very successful in the cloud, but more importantly, lower price performance for them. So what we wanted to do is give them the best possible performance that's available at the lowest possible cost. And if you look at a number of the announcements that Andy made today, you know whether it's our latest graviton processor where you can, you know, when you move to arm. I think customers often overestimate how much work it will be to move to arm. And when I talked to them after they have moved, that's ahead. Wasn't actually that much work. We actually got it up and running relatively quickly. So what's simpler than people expect? But that's an opportunity to save 40% on price performance. You know these new newer workloads like our graphics. We just launched a new G four a D, which is an AMG based GPU solution, the first time we have had an AMG GPU on the EEC too. And that's also looking to say, if you know upwards of 40% price performance of other GPU offering so just incredibly exciting for graphics, work, clothes and then in the machine learning space. Like I think, if you know, machine learning is just become the new normal, like everybody is doing it. And you know, just three years ago, everybody was thinking about whether they should do it. How would how they would use it Now that it's a lot of companies are doing it. It's really How do you How do I use it more? And that comes down to again saving costs. And so what we know with without Inferential Chip and then the new Habbaniya chip we just announced it with with the work with Intel that we're doing and then a new trainee, um, ship for training, training. We're really working to lower the cost of machine learning. And so, like we've seen many customers like Alexa was a great use case the other day. Being able to lower the cost of inference for Alexa by 35% again just helps customers, you know, move to the cloud. But I mean, just generally, you know, we're trying to support customers everywhere where there were, you know, if there are many customers are in their own data centers looking to move to AWS. You know, we have great models that can support them with our existing compute. A new savings plan offering we announced last year just great for saving costs on getting the price down So a lot. You can look at it. You know, I could go on forever. Really. It >>Certainly it's certainly is MAWR. We'll we'll do a deeper dive follow up after reinvent, but it is a wake up call. As I wrote in my post, um, for a cloud on Finally, I've been saying this for years. Horizontal scalability is a disruption on the infrastructure side, but you've got vertical specialization with data to create great modern apse of machine learning. And I actually playing out in full display here is Andy said, um, net right now. So all this benefits and all these opportunities to disrupt horizontally and then leverage the data all tied together, all coming together. You're clear. Leading the team. Marc Lemire, senior vice president general manager of the Cloud Services business unit at VM Ware and David Brown is the vice president for two at AWS Amazon Web services. Both Cube alumni's great to see you guys remotely Thanks. Coming on eso i first vm worlds not face to face. Usually it's great event reinvents Also gonna be virtual again. It's, you know, we're gonna get the content out there, but people still gotta know the news is gonna know what's going on. Um, I remember three years ago, I interviewed Pat Kelsey and Andy Jassy in San Francisco on the big announcement of AWS and VM Ware Uh, vm ware on a W s. Really? Since then, what a great partnership Not only has VM where have cleaned up their clarity around cloud. But the business performance mark has been phenomenal. Congratulations. All the data that we're reporting shows customers are leaning into it heavily Great adoption and super happy success. A US congratulations as well for great partnership. Mark three years, Uh, with the industry defining partnership. Ah, lot of people were skeptical. We're on the right side of history, I gotta say, we called >>it. That's right. It's an update. Yeah, No, look, we're super excited. Like you said, It's the third year anniversary of this game changing partnership and look, the relationship could not be stronger right across engineering the product teams to go to market teams really getting stronger and deeper every day. And at the end of the day, you know, of course, what it's about is innovating on behalf of our customers, delivering compelling new capabilities that allow them thio, migrate and modernize. And, you know, look, we're just really pleased with the partnership, right? And I think, as a result of that depth of joint engineering, building and delivering the service together, you know, we're proud to be able to say that it addresses are preferred public cloud partner for the Starbase workloads. >>You know, I remember at the time David talking to Terry Wise Ah, native West Side and Andy, of course on Ragu the architect for this vision of the partnership. And this changed how vm Ware has been doing partnerships on. I want to talk about that because I think that's a great use case of what I call the new cloud native reality that everyone's living in. But before we get there, Mark, there's some news tied around AWS and VM. Where could you take a minute to, uh, share the news around what's going on with VM World 10 0 You got connect. You got all kinds of enhancements. Just the update on the news. >>Yeah, sure. So you know, we continue Thio, listen closely to our customers and continue to deliver them new value, new capabilities and a few things we're gonna highlight at being world. The first is we've heard from many customers, you know, they love the ability to rapidly migrate their visa service workloads to the AWS Cloud and VMC on AWS is really a game changer. From that perspective on dso that continues to be really, really compelling use case for many customers. But what they've also said to us is, Look, it's not just about migrating to the cloud. It's also about migrating and then modernizing. And so, together with AWS, we have really brought together the richest set of tools for our customers to enable them to modernize those applications. Of course, we've talked about before. Customers have access to the full rich set of AWS services on Ben within VM or called on AWS. We're now announcing support for native kubernetes capabilities within VM Ware Cloud in eight of us taking advantage of the VM Ware Tansy Communities, good service. So we're really excited about bringing that that service in particular to our joint customers and then three other kind of key innovation that we're going to be talking about is around networking, right? And as our customer environments get larger and larger and they're looking to create a fairly sophisticated apologies between their on Prem Data Center between multiple VMC and AWS instances and between perhaps multiple native aws vpc s, we've done a lot of work together to really simplify the way that customers can connect all those environments together. Onda, maybe Dave wants toe talk a little about that. >>It did chime in. What's What's the news on your end to? What's the relationship and an update from the Amazon side for VM World? >>Yeah, absolutely. I mean, the partnership has just been incredible working with being where Right, Right? Right from four years ago, when we first started with the idea of what could be a W s and beyond where do together. I think we've seen really deep engineering engagement, but also leadership engagement on support from leadership on both sides was really set. Set us up for the partnership that we have today, which has been phenomenal. You know, Mark was just talking about the transit connect feature that beyond whereas adopting and what you really seen, there is years of innovation on the networking side of the sea to where we've really understood deeply what customers need from a network. Understood the fact that they're trying to recreate some of those large networked apologies that they're doing on premise on, then trying to support them in a cloud way of supporting them in a cloud about, like, way. And so, you know, transit gateways to service under the hood that we released about two years ago. It reinvent. And so what we've been doing with being where he's working out. What is Transit Gateway mean within the VM Ware environment? And so really bringing customers that that rich connectivity that they need? You know, whether it's between the BBC's between the VM Ware environments, even back to on Prem or between regions on DSO. That's what transit connect now on being where it's gonna be utilizing and bringing to customers we're pretty excited about. You know what that means for our customers? >>You know, one of the trends I see coming out all the announcements. David, I want to get your thoughts on it because we talked briefly a few months ago, uh, for your summit virtual. But I want you to kind of put it in context of VM Ware because you're seeing virtualization of physical things. You know, Nick's with Project Monterey and all that stuff with within video and software. You see to you guys have seen this vision not just compute, but you talk about networking. You know, you have the really the first time this convergence of physical own software virtual and This is not new to you guys. I know this is the premise of Amazon Cloud. First, you have the building blocks as three NBC too. But now a slew of other services. But this trend is gonna continue. Certainly with covert and work at home, there's mawr need firm or compute more different kinds of compute. You got the physical layer from the network of the devices. This isn't gonna go away. I mean, I would just need some interviews about Space Force, and they're talking about software to find, um, devices you can't do break fix in the space. So you know all this is gonna be done with software and this idea of the physical virtual coming together I mean, I know I love the Virtual Cube were not in person, which we were. But this virtualization trend around the hardware this is this'll is all about the sea, but the sea spinning for years. How does that relate >>to be inward customer? So, I mean, I think the VM ware customers experience which realization right long before ec2 was around as well. When being we're back in the day with being workstation, uh, it's it's kind of central to what they've been able to do, you know, being able to virtualized environments, being able to stand up environments ready very quickly on a physical machine is what the English board for the customer, Easy to started in a similar place. You know, the strength of the C two is being able to get a B m in a few minutes. Andi, you know, we've just grown the what we can support in a virtualized world. So you think about where we started with very simple machines, you know, today is supporting things like HPC and and advanced. You know, accelerators like GP use. And if p g A s and so we've already pushed the virtual world now, interestingly enough, you know, Vienna is obviously doing the same thing with their hyper visor. You know, many, many happy customers there. The really interesting thing it was through the innovation that we were doing on the easy to side to work out. How do we really get the most out of virtualization? Historically, virtualization is being played with things like jitter and just performance. You couldn't really get the network performance there with CPU would stall and those are sort of the old issues. The cloud in the innovation we've been doing is largely gotten rid of those. And so it's actually almost the the the ability to remove the virtualization from easy to. That really was the ingredient that enabled us to allow VM Ware to run on this. And so that's where it all started. Back in late 2016 we started to work with my team saying, You know, we've actually built the ability through our nitro system, um, to not require our virtualization layer. And then we could replace that virtualization with the VM Ware virtualization layer and that that set us up for what we have today, right? That that made VM ware on AWS a reality that gave the VM Ware customer you know, the full VM ware virtualization support, which is what the applications have been. Both Paul, that's what they've really come. Thio love. I don't want to change all of that when they moved to the cloud and so being able to move those workloads to the cloud for being where you know on on AWS and and get the benefit of great hardware design together with the great opera visor from being where obviously, it's a virtual the end of the day with a lot of innovation that we need to make him that >>mark. I wanna get your thoughts on this because I remember when we again years ago when we covered it again on the right side of history of the prediction, we said It's gonna be a great thing, afraid of us. And the end where some of the other commentary was at that time was Oh, my God. VM was lost at the capitulated Amazon is gonna suck all the thousands and thousands of VM where customers into the cloud and they're gonna eat him up in Vienna. Where is gonna be sitting there? Uh, you know, inside of the road. Okay. Not the case. Your business performance has been exceptional. Okay? The customers have been resonating with the offering. It's been a win win. Can you talk about the business momentum and how this continues to go? Because again, everyone got it wrong on that side. This has been exactly how you guys had heated up. I mean, a little bit here, and they're not exactly, But from a business perspective, it hit the mark. What's your thoughts? >>Yeah. No. Look, we've been incredibly pleased that the customer adoption that we've seen for the service, um, in fact, you know, the total workload count on the service has increased by over 140% versus this time last year, right? So clearly, customers are adopting the service at a large scale on growing rapidly. But I think you sort of feel that killed that back a little bit, right? It's It's really driven by three use cases and the value that we're able to deliver the customers right? And so if you're a customer, that's gotta be severe based workload in your own data center, and you want to move to the AWS Cloud. You know the fastest, lowest cost lowest Chris Way to move that workload is using VM Ware Cloud on AWS, right? And so it's that use case. It's powering a lot of that consumption. Another interesting use case that Xdrive in a lot of demand and that we continue to invest and expand is disaster recovery, right? So there's some customers that still want to run some more clothes in their own data centers, but they'd like to build leverage the public cloud as a target for disaster recovery. And you think about it you're talking about, you know, Cloud delivered as a service and the elasticity and all of those benefits. Those really playoff strongly in the d r use case where you Onley really want to spend up that capacity in the scenario where you actually need it, right in the case of a natural disaster. And so VM were recently acquired a company called Atrium and we're using that technology to enable a new service we call VM Ware. Cloud D are on top of the VMC on AWS offering, and this is a really powerful capability because it allows our customers to significantly reduce the cost of disaster recovery by taking advantage of AWS is low cost s three storage, combined with some unique capabilities in the day trip service that allows us to store the V M. D. K. Is very cost effectively on the next three storage. And then, in the case of a disaster, we can spin up those hosts. You know, they've talked about the nitro host. I've been spin up those bare metal host with the being more hyper visor on it and automatically restart those workloads without requiring any. VM conversion is because, of course, it's all all these fear based, right? So you know, it's so we're really pleased with the business performance, but you know, sort of behind that, of course, is the value that we can deliver to our joint customers together. >>You know, the integration thing is interesting again. I think the success is that there's a partnership at the highest levels and trickles down into engineering. David, talk about what's next for AWS because, you know, after cloud, you've got cloud native integrations. They're gonna be needed across more partners and more customers. Um, but they don't wanna do the heavy lifting, right? So So if I'm a customer like, hey, you know what? I just want Mawr Cloud scale. I want more cloud capabilities, but I don't want to do all this integration. How does how does Amazon view that conversation? Because again, that's one of the things that every interview, every reinvent every time I talk to Andy and the team. It's undifferentiated, heavy lifting what our customers asking for free from from you guys. VM, where customers and What's the What's your thoughts on this? What do you guys thinking about right now? >>Absolutely. I think market head on a couple of key points there as well or at the customer in this case, off. I have a workload today that I run in my data center or running a cola facility, whatever it might be. And I run it for many years, Um, in many cases working with customers in industries like healthcare and finance. You know, where they've actually had these thes applications qualified or certified? I'm to actually one on that hardware. And so, you know, requiring them to move to a different hyper visor is obviously a ready they'd lift and may slow down the ultimate migration to the cloud. Um And so having vm ware cloud on AWS and the ability to say to those customers, you know, just bring your application and you'll workload and and honestly the benefit of the entire ecosystem that VM Ware provides and come and enjoy that on AWS and burst into aws eso that's just been enormously beneficial for our in customer, For AWS is probably aware. I think that's the thing that really makes the partnership incredibly strong. And from there, you know, these customers can pivot. And so one of the things that we've been doing together with Vienna, where is ongoing innovation? Right. So we recently just launched, um, support for our I three n uh storage instance type, which offers up to 50% discount storage per gig with VM ware. And there's a lot that went into that behind the scenes to make sure that that instance type is perfectly tuned for what VM were needed for their end customer. We're very excited to get that out. There are many, many customers so excited about the benefit that that brings to them, right? So they're getting all the benefit of AWS innovation while they keep the benefits that they've been enjoying on the VM Ware side. Um, and you know, that speaks to the largest sort of approach that AWS has taken in in several industries across several industries. Right being where, I think is probably the best example of that. But if you look at many other areas like our networking products, customers will often come to us and say, you know, I love using a certain type of load balance. So I love using this firewall. Um, you know, within my environment. And we have great partnerships of all those companies to say if your customer, while joint customer, wants to use whatever appliance, whatever application, you know, we have a full market place full of thousands of applications that are all certified to run on us. We want to make sure we can meet those customers where they are and simplify the immigration story for them as much as we can. >>All right, So I gotta put you guys on the spot. Mark will start with you, but you can't get the same answer. Um, to the same question. The question is, what are the customers most happy with with the partnership from a feature perspective? What's the one? What? What would you say, Mark, um is the big Ah ha. This really is amazing. I'm so happy because of this feature capability. >>Yeah, yeah, I mean, a little bit back to the discussion we're having before, but I think you know the killer use case Really for the service today is that cloud migration use case I was talking about before. And if you think about what it might have taken them previously. Right? Uh, you know, expensive time consuming. Um, you know, it requires changes to their environment. In some cases, with with VM or cloud on AWS, we could take the cloud migration that would previously been taken them perhaps years, millions or tens of millions of dollars. And we can shrink that down toe literally months, right. We have some customers like m i t. That migrated hundreds of applications literally over a weekend. Right. And we're able to do that because it's the same core enterprise Class V, and where capabilities of the customers already optimized their application to run on in their own data centers that now we've enabled on AWS as a cloud service so that that cloud migration use case kind of combined with the fact that we're, um that were delivered to them as a service in the AWS cloud. I think is, uh, you know, one of the one of the use cases that a lot of customers find extremely attractive. >>Alright, David, your turn from an M. A w s perspective. What are people happy with you for on this partnership? What praises? Are you getting some your way When someone says, Hey, man, this partners has been great. Amazon really is awesome for this. What would you say to that? >>Eso, you know, watch book about the migration I was going to choose sort of, You know, once they're in aws, um, the benefits of the power brakes writes the ability to scale on the mind. E think one of the great things about the record in AWS that VM Ware did is already built it as a cloud native service. And so, you know, the customers are able to provision additional capacity very easily. We have that capacity available on AWS, and so they're able to meet any sort of unexpected demand of scale. Um, and then together with the breadth of services that we have on a diverse is Well, you know, you and we've we thought very carefully about how being were customer would want to consume those and to make sure that the whole system set up to allow that to happen. And so allowing them to to broaden what they're using over time, is there. Engineers and teams find other services that allow them to innovate faster and, you know, bold more interesting applications so that it integrates incredibly well between AWS and VMware and customers benefit from that. >>I wanna ask you guys, um, or in the industry side, um, to comment on cloud native, um, mainly because one we cover it into it's kind of important trend. Um, recently, snowflake went public with the largest i p on the history of the of Wall Street, and it's an enterprise company. Okay, Um, and I was using that as an example because actually being where was the second most popular, uh, Hypo happens to be another enterprise company if and I was commenting on this, and I want to get your reaction to it And that is, is that if you look at the mega trend that's going on now, of all the things people talk about, it's the cloud native That's the most interesting, because this is all the value. If you look at the modern applications all the way down to the networking, everything in between. It's all about cloud native, And it's not just about cloud public cloud. It's not about It's an operating model when we talk about that. But Cloud native is the big wave that people are on. And if you're on it, your modern. This is not just hand waving. It's legit. I mean, you're seeing benefits of it. You're seeing speed, time to value all the things that people talk about, it, the events. Could you guys comment on why Cloud native is so important today and why customers and developers should be really thinking through what that is for them. Um, David will start with you. >>Absolutely. So for us part native really means, you know, have you built your application in a way that takes advantage of the benefits of the cloud? And so are you able to scare the application horizontally? Are you able, Thio? You know, building away That's redundant Across multiple data centers. Are you able to utilize services that are provided by, you know, aws, the cloud provider Thio to not have your teams build that And so what it ultimately means is you're able to spend more time focused on on building stuff that really matters. You know, if your application So you mentioned Snowflake, you know there are a great AWS customer work very closely with them and and they're able Thio, have us around a lot of the infrastructure, all the infrastructure for them in the power. And they can really focus on building an absolutely incredible data, whereas in solution for their end customer and we innovate very closely with them. And so that's really what it means, you know. And I think organizations that have gotten themselves there ready get a lot of benefit. They're able to innovate faster. They're able Thio deliver more to the end customer. You know, we spent a lot of time with companies that you wouldn't say a cloud native today and as a cloud provider, azi exciting as it is to support the cloud native customer, it's also incredibly important that we find a way to support the company. That's on a journey towards adopting the cloud, right? They've got a long history. Maybe they've been around for many, many, many years. Andi, I've got a large application stack that they need to move. And so that's where our migration programs really support customers. You need to bring non card native applications and then we're able to work with them over time to make them, you know, more cloud native and get a lot of those benefits. And so it's a journey that I think many of companies on. Some started there, and some have a way to get their differently. Has a lot of benefit. >>Isn't Snowflake really in Just a example of value creation? I mean, it's not about that. They're on Amazon. You're happy about that. But it shows that you don't have to go a certain way. If you create value, speed, scale speaks for itself. So that's just that could be an enterprise. That could be startup. That could be the Cube. It could be anybody, right? I mean, don't you see it that way? >>Absolutely. Absolutely. I mean, they had a great use case that a customer need. It's in a really interesting area, obviously dealing with big data. And so I think you know, there's there's really no limit there, >>Mark. You guys are in the modern app. That's what you're hearing. It's one of the things that people gonna wanna come out of co vid. They're gonna wanna have a growth strategy. Cloud native. Why is it important? And what's your take on this? What's your reaction to the cloud native being the big wave? >>Yeah, I mean, I think. I think Dave said it. You know very well. I mean, when I talked to customers, you know, regardless of where they are in that journey, they all have some form of digital transformation agenda. Right? And at the end of the day, they wanna deliver better services to their end customers because they know that's what different is going to differentiate them. Or they want a better empower their employees, right? And as part of trying to deliver that value to their customers, their employees, you know, they want to focus their time and energy on the things that really differentiate them. Right? And, you know, for many of them that that means, you know, they don't wanna have to worry about, you know, upgrading some infrastructure software, right? That's not that's not delivering value to their to their customers. And so, you know, I think as they go down that journey, you know, we're really pleased to be ableto partner. What they did you ask to be able to create these, uh, you know, these powerful platforms together between VM ware and AWS that really deliver a lot of value to customers and allow them to focus on what's important their business, right? And, you know, by bringing together those enterprise class VM, or capabilities that hundreds of thousands of customers trust for their most mission critical workloads. Combining that with eyes, they have talked about the possibility of agility, the scalability of the dust cloud and then sort of, you know, not just those existing workloads, but also enabling a rich set of new services those customers can take advantage of to modernize. You know, whether it's VM Ware services like I talked about before with our native kubernetes capability built into BMC or whether it's the you know, hundreds and growing portfolio abated bus services, you know, giving them all, giving them the power of that full toolkit as a service so they can focus on building value on top. I mean, that's e think, really they want an equation. But that's why so many customers are moving down that path together with us. >>Well, congratulations. I want to say to you because David Lynch has been digging into the buyer behavior data, looking at the what the budget projections gonna be and VM ware on AWS has been strongly performing, and it's doing really well. Congratulations. And David. Great to have you back on. And you got reinvent less than 60 days away. Can you give us a little taste, teaser and taste of what you got going on? I know you can't reveal, but what kind of generally we're gonna be seeing at reinvent, uh, with E c two and your team >>absolutely reinvents a little different this year. It's It's obviously virtual on, so we're pretty excited about that. We think it will bring a new flavor. And so there's a lot of planning going on both in terms of product delivery. It was a It was a great time of year for us as we finish up a lot about big releases aimed at reinvent, then obviously working on content and presentations. And so, you know, a lot of interesting stuff for customers to think about is that >>they're not revealing anything. You just you know. Okay, you're gonna have some announcements. I'm sure you see two. That's a big announcements. Exactly. Hiding the ball, as they say. David Brown, vice president of Easy to it. Amazon Web services. AWS, Markle, Omar s v P. And GM. Can Eisner, Who's the director of worldwide education programs for AWS Amazon Web services? Ken, great to see you. Thanks for coming on. This could be a great segment. Looking forward to chatting. >>Thanks so much, John. Great to talk to you again. >>You know, I'll say, Cube Virtual public sector summit Virtual. We've been virtualized as a society. I'll see the pandemic and all the things that is going on around has been pretty crazy. And one of the things that's most notable is the impact on Education. New York Times This morning and many published reports around the impact College education. Not only economics on the campus aside, the state of the people in the society and Covert 19 is pushed schooling online for the foreseeable future. What's your reaction is you're in charge you've done a lot of work on the foundational level to get Amazon educational programs out there. Take a minute to explain how how this has impacted you guys and your ability to bring that educational stuff to the to the foreseeable future. >>Yeah, the first thing I'd say is this This truly is an absolutely unprecedented time There. Move from virtual instruction. Excuse me from in person classroom instruction into the virtual world at such amazing scale, rapidity is something that educational institutions weren't ready for that couldn't be ready for at this time. We had to enter it with amazing lump levels of empathy for what was going on on the ground in K 12 schools and higher ed schools with our educational technology and publisher providers. So I think the first thing was we had or for the speed at which it happened, we did have to step back and look at what was going on. There are some changes that are happening in the immediacy, and there are some things that Corbett, 19 is has sped educational institutions around the world to look at. An AWS is working with those K 12 providers, higher educational providers teachers and so on on that switch, whether it's providing infrastructure that move into online learning, helping teachers as they prepare for this sort of new normal you some of examples of what has happen. We've been working with the University of Arizona. Help them stand up contact centers with the onset of of cove it and students and teachers. It's being pushed into their home environment or into virtual environments to give instruction to receive instruction. There have been a lot of calls that happen in virtual environments to staff to help them support this. And so we stood up with the University of Arizona and Amazon Amazon Connect help staff provide mobile solutions through the cell phone or computer for for students. >>I want to get your thoughts. Absolutely. I talked to Andy Jassy about this as well as well about agility. This is the Amazon wheelhouse, and you guys have gone into the I T world now developers. You went cloud native, you in that market. He won the enterprise I t market. But the reason why is that you took an old school outdated, antiquated system of I t and made it agile. That seems enough This is the country with Teresa and Andy about education in public sector. The modernization is happening, but there's also the triage and you guys have to do now in terms of getting people online. So what specifically are you doing to help education customers continue their instruction online? Because they still got to execute. They still need to provide this discussion around the fall window Coming up. You got to have the foundational things. I know you've done that, but it is hard. So what's the downstream triage when you come out of this mode of Okay, here you go. And how do you get people set up and then how they transform and re invent? >>Yeah, at this time, the disaster recovery from how do you get in that phase one with this immediate move was so prominent. And we're trying to work through that phase one and sort into sort of phase two delivery of education, which is you're moving with scale moving with agility into this world, speed and agility are really going to be the new normal for education. There were some advances that just weren't happening quick enough. Students should always have access to 24 7 learning, um, and access into that mobile arena. And they weren't having that several things that we did was we looked at our infrastructure were some of those key infrastructure elements that helped with both learning and work remotely. There were things such as Amazon, your work Doc's, which enables thieves virtual our workspaces, which enable virtual desktop environments, and appstream, which enables it APs to be streamed through virtual arena onto your removal or your desktop. Yeah, Amazon connect as I. As I mentioned before, there were services that were vital in helping speed into the cloud that was quick burst into the cloud. And so we enabled some of those services to have special promotional free rates or a given time period, and we have actually now extended that offer a into the fall into September 30th. So first we have to help people really quickly with educators. So I run this program AWS Educate, which is Amazon's global program. To provide students and educators around the world with resource is needed, help them get into cloud learning. But what we saw was that teachers around the world we're not prepared for this massive shift what we did to help that preparedness is we looked at our educators. We found that we did a survey over the weekend and found that 68% of them had significant experience or enough experience in teaching distance or online virtual education, too. Potentially leverage that for other educators around the world. So we and the other thing is teachers are really eager to help other teachers in this move, especially as they saw and they empathize with With her was the panic. Our confusion are best practices and moving into that online arena. So we saw both that they had that experience in a mass willingness to help other people, and we immediately spun up a Siri's of educator and educator help tools, whether it was a Morris Valadez are No a gift, and Doug Berman providing webinars and office hours for other educators around the world. We also did a separate tech talks offering for students. So there were there was the helping scale, whether it's getting blackboard as they ramped up to over 50 x of their normal load in 24 hours to help them deliver on that scale, whether it waas the Egyptian ministry that was trying to had to understand. How could they help students access the information that they need it in speed? And they worked with thinkI, which is a net educational technology provider, to provide access to 22 million students who needed to get access online or whether it was the educator mobilization initiative that we ran. Threat US of AWS Educate Helps Teachers have the resource is that they need it with the speed that they needed to get online. This is we are working. We're learning from our customers. As this happens, this is a moving target. But when I move from this immediacy of pushing people into the virtual space into what's gonna happen this summer, as students need toe recapture, learning that they might have lost in the spring are depending where you are worldwide. There's getting to your point all K 12 higher ed and educational technology providers into the position where they can act with that agility and speed. And it's also helping those educators as they go through this. We're learning from our customers every day. >>Yeah, I want to get into those some of those lessons, but one of things that will say, You know, I'm really bullish about what you do. Getting cloud education, I think, is going to change the literacy and also job opportunities out there. I'm a huge believer that public sector is the next growth wave, just like I t was. And it's almost the same movie, right? You have inadequate systems. It's all outdated. You need these workloads, need to run and then run effectively, which you guys have done. But the interesting thing with Cove it is it essentially exposes the scabs and the uh out there because, you know, online has been an augmentation to the physical space. So when you pull that back, people like me go, wait a minute. I have kids. I'm trying to understand their learning impact. Everyone sees it now. It's almost like it's exposed. Whether it's under provisioned VP ends or black boys networking and everyone's pointing their fingers. It's your fault and its the end. So you brought this up. There's now stakeholders whose jobs depend upon something that's now primary that wasn't primary before. Whether it's the presenter, the content presented the teacher certainly high availability. I t. Um >>all these things >>are just under huge pressure. So I gotta ask you, what are the key lessons and learnings that you have seen over the past few months that you could share because people are shell shocked and they're trying to move faster? >>Yeah. So first of all is speed and agility and education are the new normal. They should have been here for a while. They need to be here now when you've got a 30 year textbook, your ruling over education when students need to get the skills of tomorrow. Today we need to be adapting quickly in order to give those students the skills to give educational institution those opportunities. Every institution needs to be enable virtual education. Every institution needs to have disaster recovery solutions and they weren't in place. These solutions need to be comprehensive. Students need access to devices. Teachers need access to professional development. We need contact centers. We worked with Los Angeles Unified School District not just to stand up a contact center, which we did with yeah, Amazon connect. But we also connected their high school seniors too, with headphones. I think we provide 132,000 students with headphones. We are helping to source with through our Amazon business relationship devices for everybody. Every student needs access in their home. Every student needs access to great learning and they needed on demand. Teachers need that readiness. I think the other thing that's happening is the whole world is again speeding through changes that probably should have happened to the system already that virtual learning is vital. Another thing that's vital is lifelong learning. We're finding that and we probably should have already seen. This is everybody needs to be a student throughout their entire life, and they need to be streaming in and out of education. The only way that this could be properly done is through virtual environments through the cloud and through an access to on demand learning. We believe that this that the work that's being done I was actually talking to some people in Australia the other day and they're saying, You know, the government is moving away from degree centrist city and moving into a more modular stackable education. We've been building AWS educate to stack to the job to stack to careers, and that type of move into education, I think, is also being spent So were you were seeing the that move Apple absolutely accelerate. We're also seeing the need to accelerate the speed to research. Obviously with what's going on going on with Kobe 19 there is a need for tools to connect our researchers two cures to diagnostic, um, opportunities. We worked with the University of British Columbia, Vancouver General Hospital and the Vancouver I Get this thing, the Vancouver Coastal Health Research UNE Institute to develop to use Amazon sage maker to speed ai diagnostic tool so that pushed towards research is absolutely vital as well. We just announced a $20 million investment in helping you speak that that research to market so education needs to operate at scale education needs to operate at speed, and education needs to deliver to a changing customer. And we've got to be partners on that journey. >>And I think I would just add reinvent a word. You guys name your conference after every year. This is a re invention opportunity. Clearly, um, and you know, I was talking to some other parents is like, I'm not going to send my kids to school online learning for zoom interview, zoom, zoom, zoom classes. I'm like, Hey, you know, get a cloud data engineering degree from Amazon educate because they'll have a job like that. Once you put on linked in the job skills are out there. The jobs are needed. Skills aren't so. I got to ask you, you know, with this whole re Skilling, whether it's a Gap year student in between semesters, while this takes care of our up Skilling people on the job, this is huge world economic form said by 2020 half of the employees will need to be re skilled up skilled. This is a huge impact and even more focus with covert 19. >>That's absolutely correct. Yeah, I think one thing that's happening is we're cloud computing has been the number one Lincoln skill for the past four or five years. The the skill. Whether it's software development in the cloud cloud architecture, your data world, our cyber security and other operational rules, those are going to be in the most demand. Those are the skills that are growing. We need to be able prepare people for rules in technology. The lifelong worker, the re skill up skill opportunities, absolutely vital Gap year is going to be available for some students. But we also got a look at you know how the this that how covert 19 can accelerate gaps between students. Every student needs access to high quality education. Every teacher needs to be equipped with the latest professional development. We've got focused like a laser, not just on. The people could afford a gap. Here are the people who who are going to be some schools who actually had solutions that could immediately push there kids into their their youth, their students in college or even employees. You need those re skills. We're all home. But it also needs to extend into the middle of the middle of Los Angeles and and you're into low income students. And in Egypt, I was really excited. We we've been working with Northern Virginia community colleges as I think you know, they were one of the lead institutions. On launching an associate degree in the cloud, they took their courses and offer what they call a jump year to 70,000 high school senior. Our high school students in Northern Virginia in the northern Virginia area, including enabling some of our cloud computing horses, are the work courses that we worked on with them to the students. So yeah, those new partnerships, that extension of college into high school and college into re skill up skills, absolutely vital. But institutions need to be able to move fast with the tools that the cloud provides you into those arena. >>Well, you know, I think you've got a really hard job to do there. It's foundational in love, what you're doing and you know me. I've been harping people who watch the Cube know that I'm always chirping and talking about how the learning is non linear. It's horizontally scalable. There's different application. You can have an application for education. It's a Siri's of different things. The workload of learning is completely different. I think to me what you guys are doing right now setting that basics foundation infrastructure. It's like the E. C two s three model. Then you got more on top of it platform, and I think ultimately the creativity is going to come from the marketplace. Whoever can build those workloads in a very agile, scalable way to meet the needs, because, let's face it, it can't be boring. Education is gonna be robust, resilient and got to deliver the payload and that's gonna be customized applications that have yet to be invented. Reinvented >>absolutely. Hopefully were jump starting that next wave of innovation spreading the opportunities Teoh all students. Hopefully we are really looking at those endemic issues and education and following leaders like University of Arizona. What the Ministry of Education, um in in Egypt has done and Northern Virginia community. Hopefully we are really taking this the opportunity of this disaster to invent on behalf of our students. Bring in you forward to the 21st century as opposed to yeah, just looking at this naval gazing way we do wrong and the past. This is an exciting opportunity, albeit a obviously scary one is we're all dealing with this with this and >>there's no doubt once we've retrenching and get some solid ground postcode 19. It's a reinvention and a reimagine growth market opportunity because you got changing technology, changing economics and changing expectations and experiences that are needed. These are three major things going down right now. >>Absolutely, absolutely. And to your point, the retraining of workers, the up skill that the great thing is that governments realize this imperative as do educational institutions and obviously yet students. This is, and we seem like what educators can do when they want to help. Yeah, other educators, this is This is an opportunity in our society to really look at every everybody is a constant learner were a constant learning from our customers. But everybody, there is no end to education. It cannot be terminal. And this is an opportunity to really provide the students learners with skills that they need in an on demand fashion at all times and re think re innovate, reinvent the way we look at education in general. >>Well, a man, Jeff Bezos says Day one. It's a new day, one, right? So you know that there is going to reinvent Ken. You doing great work. Director of worldwide education programs Ken Eisner with Amazon Web services, Certifications and degrees and cloud computing will be the norm. It's gonna happen again. It was re invent 2019 3rd day of a massive show where our seventh year of the eight years of Abel documenting the history and the rise in the changing landscape of the business. I'm John for Bruce. To Minutemen, my co host. Our next guest Bill McGee, senior vice president, general manager of the Hybrid Cloud Security group within Trend Micro. So, this company, those guys now lead executive of the Cloud Hybrid. I have rid Cloud Security hybrid in there looking cute. >>And I've been to every reinvent, every single one. >>Congratulations. Thank you. >>Thank you. Nice to be >>here. So, eight years, what's changed in your mind? Real quick. >>Uh, wow. The Yeah, certainly. The amount of a dot Uh, the amount of adoption is now massive mainstream. You don't have the question. Should I go to the cloud? It's all about how and how much. Probably the biggest change we've seen is how it's really being embraced all around the world where a global company we saw initially a US on Australia type focused you K. Now it's all over the place and it's really relevant everywhere, >>you know, at least from my standpoint. And I have enough friends of mine in the security industry. When we first started coming to show, I mean security was here. Security is not only is so front and center in the discussion of cloud that they had all show for it here, so you know, it gives the 2019 view of security inside that the broader hybrid cloud discussion here, a re >>investor. Let me tell you a couple of things, kind of what we're seeing within our customer base and then what matters from a security perspective. So we see, you know, some organizations doing cloud migration moving. We're close to the cloud of various forms. Had a couple of meetings yesterday. One was college evacuating their data center. The other one was celebrating that two weeks ago they closed their data center, So that's a big step. Windows and Lennox workloads moving to the cloud and really changing existing security controls toe work better in the cloud. But certainly what a lot of these cloud builders are here for is, you know, developing cloud native applications. Originally back 78 years ago, that was on top of what's now seem like pretty simple. Service is like s three E. C two. I've got containers and server lists and other platforms that that people are using. And then the last thing. A lot of companies are establishing a cloud centre of excellence, and they're trying to optimize the use of the cloud. They still have compliance requirements that they need to achieve. So these are what we see happening and really the challenge for the customer. How do we secure all this? How do we secure the aggressive, aggressive cloud Native application development? How do we help a customer achieve compliance easily from a cloud centre of excellence? So that's where we see us fitting. And we made a big announcement a couple of weeks ago about a new platform that we've created. I would love to talk to >>love that. Let's dig into that. But first we were at reinforces Amazons First security, Carver's David Locked and I were talking about cloud security was on Prem security and then what's happening here and had a conversation with someone who was close to the C I. A. Can't say his or her name. And they said Cloud has changed the game for them because they're cost line was pretty much flat. But the demand for missions were squirrels going scaling. So we're seeing that same dynamic. You were referring to it earlier that costs and data centers is kind of flat. But the demand for application new stuff's happened, so there's a real increased her demand for APS. Sure, this is the real driver, how people are flexing and deploying technology. So the security becomes really the built in conversation, cracked comment on that dynamic. And what do you recommend? Well, so here's a couple >>of things we've seen, Really? You know, again, we've been doing private security for about a decade, and really it was primarily focused on one service of eight of us, which is easy to now that's a pretty darn big service and widely used within their customer base. There's no 170 service's, I think is the most recent number. So the developers are embracing all these new service is we acquired a new capability in October. Company called Cloud Conformity, based in Sydney, Australia, very focused on AWS, analyzes implementations against the eight of US well-architected framework. So the first step we see for customers is you gotta get visibility into use of the cloud for the security team. What service is air being used, then? Can you set up a set of security guard rails to allow those service is to be used in a secure manner. Then we help our customers turn to more detailed, specialized protection of easy to or containers or server list. So that's what we've recognized ourselves. We had to create a very modest version of what Amazon has created themselves, which is a platform that allows builders to connect to and choose what security service is they want. >>Road is your service bases and all the service's air. You guys now pick and choose the wall. Yeah, there's a main ones. What does highlight? So >>there's Yeah, I'll give you the ones where we provide a very large breath of protection. So in the what we're calling Cloud one conformity service. So that's this technology we acquired a couple months ago. It cuts across about 70 service is right now and gives you visibility of potential security configuration errors that you have in your environment now if it's in a deaf team, maybe not such a big deal. But if it's in production, that is a big deal. Even better, you can scan your cloud formacion templates on the way to being live. Then we have a set of specialized protection that you know will run on a workload and protect it protected containerized environment. A library that can sit within a server lis application. That's kind of how we look at it. All right, >>So, Bill, one of things of going to the more and more cloud for customers is that there's that shared responsibility. Modern. We know that security is everyone's responsibility. It needs to be built in from the ground up. How are your customers doing with that shift? And are they understanding what they need to do? There have been some pretty visible, like a weight. I really had to configure that. I've thought about that Amazons trying to close the gap on song. But for some of those, >>we've seen a big positive change over the years. Initially I would say that there was what I would call a naive perception that the cloud with magic and it was perfectly secure and that I don't have to worry about it, right. Amazon data did the industry a real favor by establishing the shared responsibility model and making crystal clear what they've got covered that you don't need to worry about anymore as a customer. And then what are the capabilities you still need? Toe worry about? They've delivered a set of security tools that help their customers, and then they rely on partners like us. Thio deliver a set of more in depth tools. Thio, you know, specialized market. >>You actually used a word that we've been talking about a lot this week. Naive. Yeah. So we said, there's, you know, the one letter difference between being cloud native meeting Cloud naive there. Yeah. What does it mean to be cloud native in the security world? >>Well, I would say what allows you to be so first, the most important thing in every customer's mind. I don't care how good the security capabilities you're helping with me with. If you're going to slow down the improvements that I've just made to my development lifecycle. I'm not interested. So that is the most important thing is, are you able to inject your security technology and allow the customer to deliver at the rate that they're currently or continuing to improve? That is by far the most important thing. Then it's our your controls, fitting into an environment in a way that that are as easy as possible for the customer. One part that's been very critical for us. We've been a lead adopter of the AWS marketplace, allowing customers too procure security technology easily. They don't actually have to talk to us to buy our product. That's pretty revolutionary >>about the number of breaches that I'm going on, What's changed with you guys over the year because new vectors air coming out at this more surface area. Obviously, it's been discussed. What's changed most in your I'll >>tell you what we're worried about and what we expect to see, although I would say the evidence. It's early, uh, the reality in our traditional data centers. They were so porous at runtime in terms of the infrastructure and vulnerabilities that it was relatively easy for Attackers to get in the cloud has actually improved the level of security because of automation, less configuration errors. Unfortunately, what we expect his Attackers >>to move to. >>The developers moved to the depth pipeline, injecting code not a run time, but injecting it earlier in the life cycle. We've seen evidence of container images up on Dr Hub getting infected and then developers just pulling in without thinking about it. That's where Attackers are going to move to the depth pipeline. And we need to move some of our security technology to the dead pipeline toe, help customers defend themselves. >>What about International Geo Geo issues around compliance. How is that changing the game or slowing it down? Or I'm sailing it or you talk about that dynamic with regions? Are you >>sure you know us is the most innovative market and the most risk taking market, and therefore people moved to the cloud quite bravely over this over this decade. Some of the markets So, for example, were Japanese headquarters company. In general, Japanese companies, you know, really taken to a lot of considerations before they make that type of big bet. But now we're seeing it. We're seeing auto manufacturers embrace the cloud. So I think those it was a struggle for us in the early days. How regional the adoption of Cloud was. That's not the case anymore. It's really a relevant conversation in every one of our markets. >>Bill. Thank you for coming on the Cuban Sharing your insights Hybrid Cloud Security Got to ask you to end the segment. Yeah, What is going on for you This year? I'll see hybrids in your title. Operating models. Cloud center, gravity clouds going to the edge or data center. Just operate model. What's on your mind this year? What are you trying to do? Accomplish what you excited >>about? What? We're really excited about what this product announcement we made, called Cloud One. And what Cloud one is, is a set of Security Service's, which customers can access through common common access common building infrastructure, common cloud account management and choose what to use. You know, Andy put it pretty well in his keynote where you know he talked about He doesn't think of aws, a Swiss Army knife. He thinks of it as a specialized set of tools that builders get to adopt. We want to create a set of security tools in a similar way where customers can choose which of these specialized security service is that they want to adopt >>Bill. Great pleasure to meet you and have this conversation pro and then security area entrepreneur sold his company to Trend Micro. This is the hybrid world. It's all about the cloud operating model. Everyone's two cubes Live coverage here in Boston, Massachusetts, for AWS reinforce. This is Amazon Web services Inaugural conference around Cloud security There first of what? Looks like we'll be more focused events around deep dive security to reinvent for security. But not no one's actually saying that. But it's not a summit. It's ah, branded event Reinforce. We're hearing Mark Ryland off director Office of the Sea. So at eight of us, thanks for coming back. Good to see you keep alumni. Yeah, I'm staying here before It's fun. Wait A great Shadow 80 Bucks summit in New York City Last year we talked about some of the same issues, but now you have a dedicated conference here on the feedback from the sea. So as we've talked to and the partners in the ecosystem is, it's great to have an event where they go deep dives on some of the key things that are really, really important to security. Absolutely. This is really kind of a vibe that how reinvents started, right? So reinventing was a similar thing for commercial. You're deep, not easy to us. Three here, deeper on Amazon. But with security. Yeah, security lens on some of the same issues. One thing that happened >> and kind of signal to us that we needed an event like this over the years with reinvent was consistently over the years, the security and compliance track became one of the most important tracks that was oversubscribed in overflow rooms and like, Hey, there's a signal here, right? And so, but at the same time, we wanted to be able to reach on audience. Maybe they wouldn't go to reinvent because they thought I'd say It's all the crazy Dale Ops guys were doing this cloud thing. But now, of course, they're getting the strong message in their security organizations like, Hey, we're doing cloud. Or maybe as a professional, I need to really get smart about this stuff. So it's been a nice transition from still a lot of the same people, but definitely the different crowd that's coming here and was a cross pollination between multiple and I was >> just at Public sector summit. They about cyber security from a national defense and intelligence standpoint. Obviously, threesome Carlson leads That team you got on the commercial side comes like Splunk who our data and they get into cyber. So you started to see kind of the intersection of all the kind of Amazon ecosystems kind of coming around security, where it's now part of its horizontal. It's not just these are the security vendors and partners writes pretty much everyone's kind of becoming native into thinking about security and the benefits that you guys have talk about that what Amazon has to have a framework, a posture. Yeah, they call it shared responsibility. But I get that you're sharing this with the ecosystem. Makes sense. Yeah, talk about the Amazon Web service is posture for this new security >> world. Well, the new security world is if you look at like a typical security framework like Mist 853 120 50 controls all these different things you need to worry about if you're a security professional. And so what eight obvious able to do is say, look, there's a whole bunch of these that we can take care of on your behalf. There's some that we'll do some things and you got to do some things and there's some There's still your responsibility, but we'll try to make it easy for you to do those parts. So right off the bat we can get a lot of wins from just hey, there's a lot of things will just take care of. And you could essentially delegate to us. And for the what remain, You'll take your expertise and you'll re focus it on more like applications security. There still may be some operating systems or whatever. If using virtual machine service, you still have to think about that. But even there, we'll use we have systems Manager will make it easy to do patch management, updating, et cetera. And if you're willing to go all the way to is like a lambda or some kind of a platform capability, make it super easy because all you gotta do is make sure your code is good and we'll take care of all the infrastructure automatically on your behalf so that share responsibility remains. There's a lot of things you still need to be careful about and do well, but your experts can refocus. They could be very you know like it's just a lot less to worry about it. So it's really a message for howto raise the bar for the whole community, but yet still have >> that stays online with the baby value properties, which is, you know, build stuff, ship fast, lower prices. I mazon ethos in general. But when you think about the core A. W. S what made it so great Waas you can reduce the provisioning of resource is to get something up and running. And I think that's what I'm taking away from the security peace you could say. We know Amazon Web service is really well, and we're gonna do these things. You could do that so us on them and then parts to innovate. So I get that. That's good. The other trend I want to get your reaction to is comments we've had on the Cube with si SOS and customers is a trend towards building in house coding security. Your point about Lambda some cool things air being enabled through a B s. There's a real trend of big large companies with security teams just saying, Hey, you know what? I wanna optimize my talent to code and be security focused on use cases that they care about. So you know, Andy Jazz talks about builders. You guys are about builders you got cos your customers building absolutely. Yet they don't want Tonto, but they are becoming security. So you have a builder mindset going on in the big enterprises. >> Yes, talk about that dynamic. That's a That's a really important trend. And we see that even in security organizations which historically were full of experts but not full of engineers and people that could write code. And what we're seeing now is people say, Look, I have all this expertise, but I also see that with a software defined the infrastructure and everything's in a P I. If I pair up in engineering team with a security professional team, then well, how good things will happen because the security specials will say, Gosh, I do this repetitive task all the time. Can you write code to do that like, Yeah, we can write code to do that. So now I can focus on things that require judgment instead of just more rep repetitive. So So there's a really nice synergy there, and our security customers are becoming builders as well, and they're codifying if you moment expression in code, a policy that used to be in a document. And now they write code this as well. If that policy is whatever password length or how often we rode a credentials, whatever the policy is where Icho to ensure that that actually happening. So it's a real nice confluence of security expertise with the engineering, and they're not building the full stack >> themselves. This becomes again Aki Agility piece I had one customer on was an SMS business. They imported to eight of US Cloud with three engineers, and they wrote all the Kuban aged code themselves. They could have used, you know, other things, but they wanted to make sure it's stable so they could bring in some suppliers that could add value. So, again, this is new. Used to be this way back in the old days, in House developers build the abs on the mainframe, build the APS on the mini computers and then on I went to outsourcing, so we're kind of back. The insourcing is the big trend now, >> right in with the smaller engineering team, I can do a lot that used to require so many more people with a big waterfall method and long term projects. And now I take all these powerful building blocks and put an engineering team five people or what we would call it to pizza team five or six people off to the side, given 34 weeks, and they can generate a really cool system that would have required months and not years before. So that's a big trend, and it applies across the board, including two security. >> I think there's a sea change, and I think it's clear what I like about this show is this cloud security. But it's also they have the on premises conversation, Mrs Legacy applications that have been secured and or need to be secured as they evolve. And then you got cloud native and all these things together where security has to be built in. Yeah, this is a key theme, so I want to get your thoughts on this notion of built in security from Day one. What's your what's your view on this? And how should customers start thinking >> about it? And >> what did you guys bringing to the table? Well, I think that's just a general say maturation that goes on in the industry, >> whether it's cloud or on Prem is that people realize that the old methods we used to use like, Hey, I'm gonna build a nap And then I'm gonna hand it to the security team and they're gonna put firewalls around it That's not really gonna have a good result. So security by design, having security is equal co aspect of If I'm getting doing an architecture, I look a performance. I look, it cost. I look at security. It's just part of my system designed. I don't think of it as like a bolt on afterwards, so that leads to things like, you know, Secure Dev ops and kind of integration teams through. This could be happening on premises to it's just part of I T. Modernization. But Cloud is clearly a driver as well, and cloud makes it easier because it's all programmable. So things that are still manual on premises, you can do in a more automated getting into a lot of conversations here under the covers, A lot of under the hood conversations here around >> security BC to one of the most popular service is you guys have obviously compute a big part of the mission Land, another of the feature VPC traffic flows, where mirroring was a big announcement. Like we talked about that a lot of talking about the E c two nitro. You gave a talk on that. Did you just unpacked it a little bit because this has been nuanced out there. It's out there people are interested in. What's that talk about inscription is, is in a popular conversation taking minutes? Explain your talk. Sure, So we've talked for now a year and 1/2 >> about how we've essentially rien. Imagine reinvented our virtual machine architecture, too. Go from a primarily soft defined system where you have a mainboard with memory and intel processor and all that kind of a coup treatments of a standard server. And then your virtual ization layer would run a full copy of an operating system, which we call a Dom zero privileged OS that would mediate access between the guest OS is in this and the outside world because it would maintain the device model like how do I talk to a network card? How I talked to a storage device. I talked through the hyper visor, but through also a dom zero Ah, copy of Lennox. A copy of Windows to do all that I owe. So what we just did over the past few years, we begin to take all the things we're running inside that privileged OS and move that into dedicated hardware software, harbor combination where we now have components we call nitro components their actual separate little computers that do dbs processing. They do vpc processing they do instance, storage. So at this point now, we've taken all of the components of that damn zero. We've moved it out into these You could call Cho processors. I almost think of them is like the Nitro controllers. The main processor and the Intel motherboard is a co processor where customer workloads run because the trust now is in these external all systems. And when you go to talk to the outside world from easy to now you're talking through these very trusted, very powerful co processors that do encryption. They do identity management for you. They do a lot of work that's off the main processor, but we can accelerate it. We could be more assured that it's trustworthy. It can it can protect itself from potential types of hacks that might have been exposed if that, say, an encryption key was in the and the main motherboard. Now it's not so it's a long story until one hour version and doing three minutes now. But overall we feel that we built a trustworthy system for virtual. What was the title of talk so people can find it online? So I was just called the night to architecture security implications of the night to architecture. So it's taking information that we had out there. But we're like highlighting the fact that if you're a security professional, you're gonna really like the fact that this system has it has no damn zero. It has no shell. You can't log into the system as a human being. It's impossible to log in. It's all software to find suffer driven, and all the encryption features air in these co processors so we can do like full line made encryption of 100 gigabits of network traffic. It's all encrypted like that's never been done before. Really, in the history of computing, what's the benefit of nitro architectural? Simply not shelter. More trust built into it a trusted root. That's not the main board encryption, off load and more isolation. Because even if I somehow we're toe managed to the impossible combination of facts to get sort of like ownership of that main board, I still don't have access to the outside world. From there, I have to go through a whole another layer of very secure software that mediates between the inner world of where customer were close run and the outside world where the actual cloud is. So it's just a bunch of layers that make things more secure, >> and I'm sure Outpost will have that as well. Can you waste on that? Seem to me to hear about that. Okay, Encryption, encrypt everything. Is it philosophy we heard in the keynote? You also talked about that as well. Um, encrypting traffic on the hour. I didn't talk about what that means. What was talked to you? What's the big conversation around? Encryption within a. W s just inside and outside. What's the main story there? >> There's a lot of pieces to the pie, but a big one that we were talking about this week is a pretty long term project we call Project lever. It was actually named after a ah female cryptographer. Eventually Park team that was help. You know, one of the major factors, including World War Two, are these mathematicians and cryptographers. So we we wanted to do a big scale encryption project. We had a very large scale network and we had, you know, all the features you normally have, but we wanted to make it so that we really encrypted everything when it was outside of our physical control. So we done that took a long time. Huge investment, really exciting now going forward, everything we build. So any time data that customers give to us or have traffic between regions between instances within the same region outside reaches, whenever that traffic leaves our physical control so kind of our building boundaries or gates and guards and going down the street on a fiber optic to another data center, maybe not far away or going inter continent intercontinental links are going sub oceanic links all those links. Now we encrypt all the traffic all the time. >> And what's the benefit of that? So the benefit of that is there. Still, you know, it's it's obscure, >> but there is a threat model where, you know, governments have special submarines that are known to exist that go in, sniff those transoceanic links. And potentially a bad guy could somehow get into one of those network junction points or whatever. Inspect traffic. It's not, I would say, a high risk, but it's possible now. That's a whole nother level of phishing attacks. Phishing attack, submarine You're highly motivated to sniff that line couldn't resist U. S. O. So that's now so people could feel comfortable that that protection exists and even things like here's a kind of a little bit of scare example. But we have customers that say, Look, I'm a European customer and I have a very strong sense of regional reality. I wanna be inside the European community with all my data, etcetera, and you know, what about Brexit? So now I've got all this traffic going through. A very large Internet peering point in London in London won't be part of Europe anymore according to kind of legal norms. So what are you doing in that case? Unless they Well, how about this? How about if yes, the packets are moving through London, but they're always encrypted all the time. Does that make you feel good? Yeah, that makes me feel good. I mean, I so my my notion of work as extra territorial extra additional congee modified to accept the fact that hey, if it's just cipher text, it's not quite the same as unscripted. >> People don't really like. The idea of encrypted traffic. I mean, just makes a lot of sense. Why would absolutely Why wouldn't you want to do that right now? Final question At this event, a lot of attendee high, high, high caliber people on the spectrum is from biz dab People building out the ecosystem Thio Hardcore check. He's looking under the hood to see SOS, who oversee the regime's within companies, either with the C i O or whatever had that was formed and every couple is different. But there's a lot of si SOS here to information security officers. You are in the office of the Chief Security Information officer. So what is the conversations they're having? Because we're hearing a lot of Dev ops like conversations in the security bat with a pretty backdrop about not just chest undead, but hack a phone's getting new stuff built and then moving into production operations. Little Deb's sec up So these kinds of things, we're all kind of coming together. What are you hearing from those customers inside Amazon? Because I know you guys a customer driven in the customers in the sea SOS as your customer. What are they saying? What are they asking for? So see, so's our first getting their own minds around >> this big technical transformations that are happening on dhe. They're thinking about risk management and compliance and things that they're responsible for. They've got a report to a board or a board committee say, Hey, we're doing things according to the norms of our industry or the regulated industries that we sit in. So they're building the knowledge base and the expertise and the teams that can translate from this sort of modern dev ops e thing to these more traditional frameworks like, Hey, I've got this oversight by the Securities Exchange Commission or by the banking regulators, or what have you and we have to be able to explain to them why our security posture not only is maintained, it in some ways improved in these in this new world. So they're they're challenge now is both developing their own understanding, which I think they're doing a good job at, but also kind of building this the muscle of the strength. The terminology translate between these new technologies, new worlds and more traditional frameworks that they sit within and people who give oversight over them. So you gotta risk. So there's risk committees on boards of these large publics organizations, and the risk committees don't know a lot about cloud computing. So s O they're part of what they do now is they do that translation function and they can say, Look, I've I've got assurance is based on my work that I do in the technology and my compliance frameworks that I could meet the risk profiles that we've traditionally met in other ways with this new technology. So it's it's a pretty interesting >> had translations with the C I A. Certainly in public sector, those security oriented companies, a cz well, as the other trend, they're gonna educate the boards and they're secure and not get hacked the obsolete. And then there's the innovation side of it. Yeah, we actually gotta build out. Yes. This is what we just talked about a big change for our C says. That we talk to and work with all the time is that hey, we're in engineering community now. We didn't used to write a lot of code, and now we do. We're getting strong in that way. Or else we're parting very closely with an engineering team who has dedicated teams that support our security requirements and build the tools. We need to know that things are going well from our perspective. So that's a really cool, I think, changing that. I think that is probably one >> of my favorite trends that I see because he really shows the criticality of security was pretty much all critically, only act. But having that code coding focus really shows that they're building in house use case that they care about and the fact that I can now get native network traffic. Yeah, and you guys are exposing new sets of service is with land and other things >> over the top. >> It just makes for a good environment to do these clouds. Security things. That seems to be the show >> in a nutshell. Yeah, I think that's one of the nice thing about this show. Is It's a very positive energy here. It's not like the fear and scary stuff sometimes hear it. Security conference is like a the sky's falling by my product kind of thing Here. It's much more of a collaborative like, Hey, we got some serious challenges. There's some bad guys out there. They're gonna come after us. But as a community using new tooling, new techniques, modern approaches, modernization generally like let's get rid of a lot of these crusty old systems we've never updated for 10 or 20 years. It's a positive energy, which is really exciting. Good Mark, get your insights out. So this is your wheelhouse Show. Congratulations. >> You got to ask you the question. Just take your see. So Amazon had off just as an industry participant riding this way, being involved in it. What is the most important story that needs to be told in the press? In the media that should be told what's as important. Either it's being told it, then should be amplified or not being told and be written out. What's the What's the top story? I don't think that even after all this time that you know when people >> hear public cloud computing. They still have this kind of instinctive reaction like, Oh, that sounds kind of scary or a little bit risky and, you know, way need to get to the point where those words don't elicit some sense of risk in people's minds, but rather elicit like, Oh, cool, that's gonna help me be secure instead of being a challenge. Now that's a journey, and people have to get there, and our customers who go deep, very consistently, say, And I'm sure you've had them say to you, Hey, I feel more confident in my cloud based security. Then I do my own premises security. But that's still not the kind of the initial reaction. And so were we still have a ways, a fear based mentality. Too much more >> of a >> Yeah. Modernization base like this is the modern way to get the results in the outcomes I want, and cloud is a part of that, and it doesn't not only doesn't scare me, I want to go there because it's gonna take a community as well.
