Joining us on the program is Kristina Draper, the chief technology officer at Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo, one of the sponsors, Kristina welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you so much Lisa, it's a real pleasure to be here. >> So this is the forth annual WiDS, and as I was mentioning some of the numbers, it's incredible, the momentum that this event has generated, we'd like to call it a movement. Tell a little bit about your involvement in WiDS, as well as Wells Fargo's involvement as a sponsor. >> Yes, um, so we are really honored to be able to be a part of WiDS. I was introduced to WiDS from an employee of mine, Catherine Lee, she joined our team just about a year ago, and she's been part of WiDS since the Inception. So working with Margo and the team and we believe so strongly that in the consumer bank space we have a tremendous opportunity and responsibility to understand how our customers interact with Wells Fargo and that will require a discipline around data science and so we had an opportunity, and had asked this year to be an executive sponsor and we jumped at it and I think we'll continue to be here at that sponsor level in future years. >> So you've been in Wells Fargo for a long time, tell me a little bit about your background of rising to become the chief technology officer. >> Sure, thank you so much for the question. It's been an interesting journey, I haven't always been at Well. So I did a few start ups here in the Silicon Valley. Um, kind of middle of my career and I came back to Wells Fargo. Most recently, I have a responsibility for the consumer bank technology space, that's the majority of branch technology. It's all of the ATMs, the point of sale network for customers. It also is a lot of business services, so how we think about services oriented architecture to ensure that we're always thinking about our customer and their accounts, in a consistent way regardless of how customers interact with Wells Fargo. So, all channels consistently trusted, so that data set's really important. And then, I also have the customer feedback and customer complaints so the idea that from survey all the way through complaints are being able to understand how our customers are interacting with us. >> And data is an interesting topic, because it's to broad. And I think so many people now across generations understand data privacy, to some degree you can think of you know, the baby-boomers that were affected by the Facebook information and things being shared. From a financial perspective, tell as a little bit about the discipline of data science, not just from the technology background and understanding that your team needs to have, but also other skills such as empathy, communication, negotiation, how are all of those contribute to what your team is delivering? >> Yeah, I would tell you we are in the business of trust. And three years ago, after sales practice came into Wells Fargo, was a very interesting time for our company. We kind of lost our way. And the opportunity with data science is an opportunity to reestablish trust with our customers. And so, you've seen a lot of the rebranding that Wells Fargo is doing in about... We were invented in 1852, but we're reinventing ourselves now. And we have to understand our customers, we have to know our responsibilities to be that trusted advisor to really care for our customers in every interaction. And so, I would think empathy, absolutely. Trust is all about every interaction consistent every time. And so, you think about even just a personal relationship and how you establish trust. It's very hard to reestablish trust, and so for us right now, the commitment to data science is about that reestablishing trust and to really thinking about every interaction with every customer and ensuring we're getting it right. >> You've been there a long time as I've mentioned, I'd love to understand your, some of the things that you've seen along the way as technology changes in terms of more females becoming interested, as we know that there was you know, from where we were in the 80s, where it has been a downwards spiral but you were recently named one of the 50 most powerful women in technology. What are some of the things as you think of how technology in Wells Fargo is re-imagining data and trust? What are the things that you've seen in terms of the evolution of females in technology and in leadership roles? >> Sure, absolutely. Thank you so much. You know think about industry recognition, and I think about how important it is to recognize women's value in the industry. So the recognition women in technology and most powerful women for me, it's an opportunity to really demonstrate that we should be very confident in the value that we bring as leaders, and that confidence as a woman is hard to come by. I think of my own personal career and the way that doors were opened for me along the way often we are our own worst enemies we second guess ourselves, we second guess our value, and we have to really work for that seat at the table. There's certainly been, I wouldn't have come back to Wells if I didn't believed that I had the right sponsors and the right mentors that were not only willing to help me kind of see the doors to walk through but to walk through those doors. And so my coming back to Wells was really about a opportunity as a leader in technology. I just had two start ups here in Silicon Valley, and so I was invited to come back and it was really the leaders and the leadership that brought me back to Wells. I felt I could make a real impact and I think that there's, when I think about the couple of jobs I've had since my second return to Wells Fargo it's really been about impact and recognizing my voice and starting to step into that accountability. When I think about what we can do as women leaders in technology and in data science a lot of it is owning that accountability to leadership and to really kind of paving the way for leaders behind us. There comes a part in a career certainly mine, where you no longer thinking about the next job for yourself and you know, I'm really fortunate that I've been able to get to a CTO level a tech division executive level, I have, you know the recognition on most powerful woman. But I don't do that alone. I do that with a team of women and men who've helped to really create value in the space that we're in. And we're in a consumer banking space and financial services and so there's certainly a lot of places to innovate, there's a lot of places to think about how technology can help to serve a Wells Fargo customer and if you think about when you need your bank you need your bank throughout your entire life. And whether you are thinking about a home purchase, an auto purchase, college for your children, retirement, there's so many big markers in life and that's where I get excited about, not only the leadership role that I have now, but I have the opportunity to bring a team with me to contribute real value. And so that's for me what really brought me back was an opportunity to have that impact to think about data science and technology in a way that there's true visible value being added to the market place to the industry. >> So it's almost like can we have pay it forward added to, how are you using that to expand your team with the right skills and the right people regardless of gender, regardless of any of that, to continue this big movement, this re-imagination that Wells Fargo is a business in undergoing. >> Yeah, well I would tell you WiDS is one way. WiDS is certainly a tremendous network opportunity if you think about the breadth and the reach across countries, across landscapes, across geographies, this is just one example of how I think about that. There's real power in relationships. There's real power in ability to establish not only a strong industry network a strong personal brand, but also a personal network. Even in the last couple of hours, WiDS started today, so inspired by the keynote speaker, so inspired about how they're turning data science and really thinking about different problems, different ways that we can improve, not only our lives, but the lives of future generations to come. I think part of how I think about it is finding that inspiration, because we have to inspire future generations of leaders, of women, and of men to really tackle the problem and have the right skills and confidence to be able to jump into that space. >> I agree with you. I think one of my favorite things in this, theCUBE has been covering WiDS since the beginning for four years and I always love coming here because you walk in and you immediately feel inspired. But you also feel that sense of collaboration, you talked about how important that is, not just for people that are in academia but in industry as well, you know I can't do what I do, you can't be a successful CTO at anywhere, at Wells Fargo let alone, any organization, without that collaborative spirit and I think I always feel that very strongly every time I walked in the door at a WiDS event, that people, they really do live up to their mission statement which is to inspire and educate women in data science and people in data science in general. >> Yeah, and I would offer that there's a lot of magic in the empty space, so the space in between and the way I would describe that is that so you come in to WidS data conference and certainly I come from a financial services background that the primary, you know, my primary professional background has been in financial services and technology, but the problems that our future generations will face can't be solved with just one lens. You can't solve problems with just a financial services expertise or just a technical expertise. You need to really look for how do you... It's the AND, and sometimes the space in between and bringing art and science. It's an ability to bring to think across industry and to apply solutions and innovation that have been brought forward through other industries, through other companies, through other academia and thinking about how that could apply in solving the problems that we're faced with in the financial services space. And so, to me coming to WiDS conference or spending time with the women that we'll meet in the room or the men that we'll meet in the room it's really about listening to their stories, listening to their passions, thinking about the problems they're solving and stepping back and identifying well, gosh if I really turned some of the problems that we're faced with upside down and thought about it with that perspective of with that lens, and maybe invited some people to your point, the collaboration to help solve problems with us, we might come up with a better answer, it's the space that's in between that might have called the difference. >> I like that! The space in between, there's so much applicability, I mean there's 2.5 quintillion data generated everyday across every industry. Whether it's you know, personal banking information or what we eat or where we travel, we do everything through mobile these days, and companies like Wells Fargo have such potential to be able to utilize that data to you know, create solutions that helps so many people. But you're right it's what can, how can financial services and the data that you deal with and to help customers and that sense, with the opportunity to influence all these other disciplines. I think that's one of the things that excites me about data science, it's how broad and symbiotic this discipline really is. >> Totally agree with you. And I have a new leader, Jason Strle, who just came in to Wells Fargo, just over a year ago, and he talks about a vision where we are 100 percent transparent in our data with our customers, so think about that value proposition in financial services, where there's a 100 percent data symmetry. What we know, you know. What you know, we know, when you want us to know it. And that can be so powerful, and that's really how we're thinking about the transformation around technology, the investment that we're going to make in data science, an AI and machine learning, because that 100 percent data symmetry comes back to trust. If we're a 100 percent transparent with everyone of our customers about what we know think about how that establishes trust. I mean that is a rock solid foundation for trust in the future, and I think that's really something that can be very powerful if we capitalize it, but we can't to it alone, we're going to need partners. We're going to need partners like so many of the companies in the academics that are in this room today. And we'll have to reach even broader because some of the solutions won't be found if we just look internal to Wells Fargo. >> Exactly. That diversity in so many ways is so impactful. Lauren Bissell, Immutable Industries | Monaco Crypto Summit 2022


 

(upbeat music) >> Hey, welcome back everyone to theCube's live coverage of the Monaco Crypto Summit here in Monaco. I'm John Furrier, host of theCube, and Lauren Bissell here, founder and CEO of Immutable Industries, focused on the advancement of technologies in art, entertainment, blockchain across multiple sectors. Great background in entertainment music, complying that into the convergence and to crypto. Welcome to theCube. I appreciate it. >> Thank you so much. Thank you guys for having me. It's been an incredible day so far. >> So we were just talking before we came on camera, your background and just the people you've worked with in the music industry. You've been there for a very long part of your career, from the beginning. Now you're on the wave of Web3, crypto, DeFi. There's a confluence of refactoring businesses. We're seeing that impact. And I think a lot of people, finance and entrepreneurial, the best brains are coming into the sector because it's an opportunity, clearly, to reset and refactor old antiquated business models and practices, in a new way to achieve the same things. Better, faster, cheaper >> Exactly. Better, faster, cheaper, is good sometimes, other times that's... We will see. But I think for me, coming in from the music industry was something that, I honestly never expected to be involved in blockchain and futuristic tech. It's always something that I admired, but I didn't really see, "Okay. Here's how I can be involved in that." I was obsessed with it. But as I was sort of progressing my career as a music producer, I saw so many issues with the industry. The way capital came in, the way that it was distributed. I mean, these things are still happening today. But I was just constantly looking around for better solutions and how to make this work in a better way. In 2017, when I started really diving into crypto, that was something where I saw a huge opportunity for the entire industry. The music industry is notorious for just sort of being behind the curve when it comes to new tech. And it's a shame. When you're in an industry that's full of art and innovation, you would think that it's something... It's an industry that would embrace this position. Maybe some people do this, and I applaud those people very much. But in general, the music industry is kind of behind. We live a little bit in the Wild West. Not in the futures way, but kind of in the old way. I'm just really excited to be able to bring these things into the industry. >> It's interesting. I'm not in the industry, in the music side, but I've been on the software industry, where you had the proprietary software, the rights, and people used to build software. And then when the company went under, the software was gone, lost forever. And in around the late eighties, nineties, open source movement happened, and it just changed everything. And I think, to me, I feel like this is a similar structural inflection point in change, where rights are changing. People are still holding onto like, "He can't use the copyright." And I even saw a stat that said, with AI now, you can actually copyright every single melody, every single note in music. So that means like, "Who the hell's going to develop anything?" So are even rights even matter? So rights, ownership, art, mixing. Funny story of my son, a year and a half ago, mixed an old song from a band that wasn't around, and it became a TikTok sensation. Hundreds of millions of listens, and then the Spotify and Apple account was making like 20,000 a week, and DistroKid cut him off. Because someone went back and claimed the copyrights. But it was a mix of a couple of different pieces of the song for a new melody. But because that wasn't his work, the middle man killed the account. >> Right. But if there had been maybe an easier solution for him to go get those rights. So I actually used to be a rights and royalties negotiation specialist. I was on the phone with labels, every second of every day. From a producer standpoint, you're trying to find something that works for the artist, something that works for the label, something that you can arrange in perpetuity, if possible. But it's just... Again, there's so many people that have to just get on the phone- >> Like a busy gen system of like- >> Yeah. >> Weirdness >> Right. >> What's the solution? >> I mean, right now one of the favorite... It's super simple. Smart contracts related to publishing and royalties. Now you still need, probably in the interim, someone to go out and... The old school job for someone in rights and royalties is sitting in a restaurant and listening to see if the music is being played, and then you write it all down on a piece of paper. I mean, that's quite old school, but that still happens in a lot of places. So we can kind of move into smart contracts for the payment systems, and eventually we can move into AI, to actually detect what music is being played where. Just to go, not really on a tangent, but it's like, "Okay. Well, are we taking a job away from someone who's supposed to sit in a restaurant and listen to the music?" Well, I think we're developing a lot of new jobs by needing to generate this software. This is more- >> I've heard that. We've heard that argument before, "Oh! Bank tellers are going to be put out of business by the ATM machine." Turns out there's more branches now. >> Right. >> Okay. There's a total waste there. I mean, people say that are like... I mean, but it does bring up the next gen, the creator, the young artist, the ability to collaborate with smart contracts, the removal of the middle person in all this, the intermediaries. That's really the key, right? >> I think it is the key. And like I said, before removal of the middle person, some people would look down on that. I think it's more efficient systems. When you have more efficient systems, you have more efficient societies, you can create bigger and better things. So is there a change process that has to happen there? Yeah, of course. But this is humanity, this is history, this is what happens. >> Okay. So you're a pro, you've been through- >> I just embrace that. >> You've been through the business, you got the scar tissue, you got the experience, you got the brains. Now you're here in the front of a new generation, a lot of pioneering going on, a lot of chaos, a lot of confusion. Some people... Blood's spilling on the ground. There's a lot of stuff going on, that is opportunity. What are you up to? How are you attacking this market, how do you look at it, what's on your mind? >> Yeah. I mean, so what's funny, I've actually been spending the last few years, sort of directly advising individuals and companies in the music industry. So everyone from artists to label executives, content distribution executives, licensing teams and publishers, and sort of explaining, "Here's how things work. Here's how we think they're going to go. And here's how, instead of running away from that and trying to block your artists from using that system, we can actually use this to enhance the financial pie of the music industry, instead of just trying to steal a piece of everyone else's pie." That's what I really want to do, is, the industry pie can get bigger. We don't need to steal your blueberries. It's just- >> They're picking up crumbs and fighting over crumbs >> Exactly. The industry changed, and I understand why it's scary. I really, really do. I've lived through this. But it's going to be- >> What do they say? What's your advice to them, and what's their reaction? Is it like, "Yeah, you said that you'd get lip service." Or like, "Yeah, we're trying my best. I'll stop drinking, I promise." I mean, I've heard... I tried last week. I mean, are they actually getting it done, or they don't know what to do? >> Yeah. Well, I think it starts with individuals. I actually spent a lot of time working with individuals on education and how they can take that information to their companies or implement that in their companies. It's on sort of a corporate level. It is slower. That's okay. That's expected. But educating sort of individuals, like I said, that's what I've been doing for the past few years, is what's really been helpful. Because if you just kind of do this overnight, I understand it's not going to happen overnight. But being able, like I said, to figure out, "Okay. We grow the financial pie for the whole industry." This accumulates, this helps the health of the industry. Like I said, I grew up in the industry. I care a lot about the industry. I actually want to see good things happen- >> Positive change. >> It's in my heart, in my soul, to make the music industry- >> So Lauren, I got to ask you. So as you see the industry changing, and it's going to be hard to get people to go through transformation. >> Yeah. >> They have to get there. Otherwise, they'll be extinct. And we kind of see that. Is there new brands emerging that have a clean sheet of paper? Because I'm a far young artist, I'm saying to myself, "Okay. If I can write my own ticket..." And by the way, brands become platforms is a big trend you're seeing with NFTs and- >> Yeah. >> And these great Web3 platforms. So I got more social power, I got collective intelligence, I got network effect, I got fans. All that's tappable now from a monetization standpoint. >> Yeah. >> Are there new agencies, new brands, emerging that's artists friendly like this? >> I mean, that's one of the reasons we're here, to begin with. I'm obviously just going to mention Digital Bits, because they're literally creating NFTs for brands. I'm here because I believe in what they're building. Their model is applicable to brands, it's applicable to artists and athletes. I actually truly believe in what they're building and how they're doing it. NFTs is a faster way to achieve what we thought we were going to achieve with sort of the tokenization of a person or an individual brand. NFTs, I think, is a better way to do that. Obviously NFTs are tokens as well, but it's a different type of thing than an ICO. >> It has more versatility and it's got the same kind of characteristics- >> Yeah. I think you can build more community with it, you can maintain the value of the token itself, the non-punchable token itself, a little bit better, and you can build community around it. >> What are some of the companies you're advising and people you're advising? Are they record labels, are they executive, like an executive coach on one end, business consultant on the other? >> Yeah. >> What's some of the range of... >> So I actually advise a couple of brands, I can't completely speak about in the music industry, but from the executive position, I do advise individual executives from the label and the content distribution side, on sort of how to implement futurist tech into their company a little bit better, and sort of what the real things that are going on, the new things that are going on. I actually just took on a role for a company called Cyber Yachts, which I'm really excited about. This one's just going to be fun. International music, entertainment, fun. >> Do you need some media up there? We'll have to do interviews on both- >> Yeah. You can come on the metaverse yacht and the physical yacht, if you want to. But- >> Monaco's a great place for that. >> We will be here. >> All right. >> Absolutely. >> So tell me about the future of some of these big agencies you mentioned? Because if you look at the market right now, if you zoom out, content is king, distribution is Kong. That's what they say. There's a lot more distribution now more than, it seems, content. That's maybe on some perspectives. But it seems like there's a lot more outlets looking for better content. >> Always. >> Do you agree that distribution's hungry for the content, or is there more content than distribution? >> I think it just depends on the type of content. If you look at the content that's being distributed over, say social media, for example, there's a plethora of content. >> Yeah. I guess I'm not- >> There's actually, now, this new hierarchy there, where you have to really scrap to get to the top. So in a weird way, you're seeing that sort of mimic. We see how societies work. So now that's become very hierarchical, and that's almost mimicking the way the traditional industry has been developed. So we go through these cycles. >> It must be hard for a record label to try to do the A and R job, when you have more artists emerging from TikTok, Instagram, the social networks, or- >> I would say their job's probably gotten easier. >> Do you think because of the filtering? >> Well, yeah. Now you can view so much talent in a tiny amount of time online. Now, do I know what they are like lives, do I know how they perform? No, I got to go figure that out. But before you had to go to clubs and sit in there, and run around a city. You can only be in so many places at one time. >> You got to chase content down, look it down. >> Yeah. >> All right, so what's the most exciting thing that you think is happening in the whole crypto world, that's people should pay attention to, that's going to impact some of the mainstream? What's the most important things, do you think? >> Well, something that's actually, somewhat unrelated to music, which is government adoption. Sorry, but hands down, that is the most exciting and important thing that's going on right now. >> Adopting it and embracing it is important. >> Adopting it, embracing it, new regulations coming out. >> Are you happy with the progress? >> Yeah. I mean, it takes time. But right now we're the biggest sort of country that sun is, El Salvador. >> And now Monaco's leaning in. >> Now Monaco is obviously leaning in, that's... It's exciting. It's really exciting. >> Well, to me, I think Digital Bits, so when you climbed in earlier, is that, there's a legitimate crossover between the physical asset, digital asset world, and now the kind of the tough parts, the in between the details and the gaps, the contracts, the royalties. >> Yeah. >> Compliance. What does that even mean? >> Right. >> How is that going to get sorted out? Do you think this is going to settle itself out on its own or self govern, a little bit of a iron hand in there, or... >> It'll be a mix. I mean, there's a lot of trial and error going on right now, as far as governments. Like I said, there's really only a few places in the world that are doing it. I applaud these places for their bravery because... Don't get me wrong. It's going to be a struggle. There's going to be failures and successes, and being willing to be one of the countries that does that, that shows some grit. I really respect it. >> And the upside is if they get it right, it's huge. Lauren, final question. What are you up to next, what's on your mind? What are you working on beyond this consultancy? What's around the corner for you? Where do you see the self dots connecting in the future? >> Well, I'm really... Right now I travel quite a bit. I spend a lot of different... A lot of time at different conferences. I spoke earlier a little bit about an education program that I'm developing with an alliance with Draper University in El Salvador. So I want to finish the programming for that. We're going to scale that out across multiple countries. And that's everything from education for governments and education for people that, maybe just recently heard of Bitcoin and they don't even know how to go about seeing what it is. >> 5G in emerging countries is pretty potential there. >> It is. Lisa Martin, with Dave Vellante. We are with UiPath at Forward IV. The next topic of conversation is going to be a good one, and that's because it's automation for good. I've got two guests here joining Dave and me, James Droskoski, Strategic Account Exec at UiPath joins us and Brian Khlochkoff, head of automation at Dentsu. Guys, welcome to the program. >> Yeah. Thank you. >> Thanks for having us. >> Yeah. Happy to be here. >> So we're going to, we're going to to dig into automation for good, which is going to be a really feel-good conversation. We're going to get into what you're doing, but Brian, I wanted you to give the audience an overview of Dentsu as an organization. Who are you, what do you guys do? >> Sure. So Dentsu is a large network of advertising agencies. We're about 45,000 people large, 10 billion plus in revenue, going across for 125 markets. So we're a large enterprise advertising media, creative CXM type business. We're really focused on helping to elevate our clients' value when it comes to the value proposition around marketing, advertising, and media. >> So you think about that as a, as a, as a, a business that maybe, you know, it's hard to understand where automation might fit in. On the other hand, it's like a lot of moving parts, a lot of arms and legs. >> Brian: Hmmm. So how are you applying automation to the business? >> Sure. So when we first started doing proof of concepts level approaches, we approach things in a traditional, hey, let's go look at the shared services groups. Why are we having invoice processing delays? Things like that. And we started being a bit more prescriptive and proactive about how we were applying the limited POC budget we had to go after these problems. And we started doing some root cause analysis to understand the interaction between the back office functions and the mid office functions. And what we uncovered was that we could actually be really good custodians of budget and enable people at the same time by solving for problems at a root cause analysis level. So what I mean by that is even the invoices coming down the pipe, and it's not getting processed because it's missing critical information that could be easily added six processes upstream. So what really helped elevate the conversation that we're having around automation for good and be a catalyst for what we're going to talk about a bit later is, we just started connecting people from the mid office to the back office, helping them understand, hey, if we actually follow process properly, put the right controls in place with RPA to generate critical data elements on those invoices, Shaler in the back office doesn't have to work the weekends because there's not a pipeline backload of invoices for them to process. So we actually connected those mid office people with the back office people, and it really drove that human connection to drive the change management and then our automation journey. And that's kind of been the crux of what we've wanted to do over the past four years, finding ways to elevate our people's potential by integrating automation and AI into their actual day-to-day work. >> Hmm. So tech for good is a theme that you hear a lot and as a, as a media company, that, that, that kind of, we're not gotcha media, you know, we've more want to tell the story of tech athletes, and I think we've done a pretty good job of that over the past decade, but so it goes, tech's under fire constantly. It was basically big tech. We hear the Facebook hearings today and so forth, but so automation kind of early days, oh, you're going to take away my job. I think generally speaking with the fatigue of Zoom and the perpetual workday, people begin to understand that, hey, maybe automation is a good thing, but automation for good, what, what is that, James? >> Yeah, well, it's, it's not doing technology for the sake of technology. You know, at the end of the day, when we implement solutions with our customers like Dentsu, it's about, what's the impact? What's the change? What's the benefit? And what's unique about Dentsu is, because they've grown through acquisition and there are lots of different companies come together, you have to focus on the people first cause there is no one process or one system that we can look and just automate that system or process. So automation for good is about focusing on the people and how do we take the solutions and the programs and the technologies we have, make an impact so that somebody's day is better. Their, their, their job is better. That process are doing is easier and they can focus on more of the things that make them different. You know, specifically as we, we'll uncover in the conversation, you know, we looked at a program that Dentsu is doing around working with different types of people, as far as people with autism and what was the impact we could do there. And that's uncovered a journey that we've been together for the last two years around seeing we can have, we can make an impact with those types of folks who might not get the same types of opportunities that everybody else. >> Brian, talk about the, the catalyst for that program at Dentsu, couple years ago. >> Sure, so it goes back to that foundational layer of elevating people's potential. So the testimonial that we had from our own employees around applying automation, meaningful ways to progress their day to day came from an employee in the mid office who said, I didn't go $160,000 in student debt to copy paste stuff from Excel into this proprietary platform that we use for media. And that really resonated with us as leaders in this space and with our executive leadership, because there was a gap between what our people's skills were and what they were actually doing. They wanted to do Mad Men type stuff. They wanted to be the Don Draper's and the Peggy Olsen's of our industry. And they were losing that opportunity because we weren't tapping into the skills that they had to drive human-centric solutions for our clients. So taking that concept, we looked at the partnerships that we have with our outsourcing providers and Autonomy Works, which we're going to be doing a session later tomorrow with the CEO, Dave Friedman, we're going to spend a lot of time talking about how the unique skill sets of that company and those people can actually elevate them to do more tech-enabled work, but also enabling our own team to focus on building solutions with the skills that we have by allowing them to use the skills that they have to do the machine-learning training of models and things like that, which they really Excel at from a detail-oriented perspective. And that's not only a feel good story, but it's, it's great for our business because the resources on my immediate team are building product, they're building solutions, and we can rely on an excellent partner in them to help us with the maintenance overhead that we're creating through those solutions. And eventually through automation cloud, driving better outcomes through positive, negative reinforcement within machine learning. >> And there's specific examples with individuals with autism, correct? >> Correct. That's right. >> Add some color to that. What is that all about? >> Yeah. Let me tell you a little story. So when, when they first brought the conversation to me, I was terrified because I, the type of work that they were outsourcing was very repetitive rule-based and I'm like, this is perfect for automate. This is exactly what we automate. I was terrified that the program we were going to work on together was going to eliminate the program. And so I was, you know, cautiously, you know, approached it- (Dave laughs) >> How ironic. (laughing) >> I was like, hey, that sounds like a great idea. And I hung up. I was like, oh, how are we going to, how am I going to figure out this one? But through the conversation, and we just started, you know, brainstorming and putting our heads together. What was interesting is, because of the way that automations work, as far as being very structured and repetitive, it lends itself well to workers with autism. It's exactly the way they think and what we actually found after kind of coming up with the collaborative ideas, hey, wait a second. We were already doing these kind of bodathon, hackathon type programs with the Dentsu employees, teaching them the skills, how to build automations for themselves. What if we kind of modified it and adjusted it to cater to these types of individuals who learn differently, we have to approach it differently. And we went through the program, we adjusted everything. And what was incredible to see was they thrived with the ability to learn how to work this way. They built things that made them more productive, that created more capacity. They could do more with less now, work with more customers, do more work for, for their, for their customers because they had this almost assistant that was kind of like them. And it was, it was just so rewarding. You know, we talk about, again, what's automation for good all about? It's about that personal reward. >> Brian: Yeah. I mean, for me, you know, we didn't sell any more licenses or it wasn't about the commercial transaction. It was about, you know, catering to the segment of the workforce that, first of all, it was very educate, enlightening to me to see how many folks are out there that are unemployed. And I got to meet these first 15 individuals that couldn't have been more amazing and more smart and more diligent and hardworking, and that the numbers are something in the lines of between 50% and 90% unemployed because they just don't get the same opportunities as people without autism. It's kind of the world's set up for us. So to know that we could do this kind of program together to go have an impact in this community, was the reward in and of itself. And, you know, we've since been working together on how we continue to expand that, how do we, you know, take that forward and bring that everywhere? Cause that's the end of the day, I think beyond, you know, revenue, this is the stuff that really matters, especially in an organization at Dentsu that, this is important. >> Yeah. And I think building on the missed opportunity piece around 50% to 90% being unemployed, that's a missed opportunity for business as well. So those skills are so niche and they're so necessary for us to thrive within an environment that's moving as rapidly as we are, because we just can't keep pace with the change of feature sets that are being released, coupled with maintaining existing solutions that we've built. So it's in cross enabling people to really compliment each other's unique skills and strengths based off of strong, true partnership. So it really became a beautiful three-way partnership between Dentsu, Autonomy Works and UiPath that we continue to evolve as UiPath makes additional releases with emerging tech that we're officially hearing about right now. So we have a ton of different ideas that we can bring that into the fold. And what resonates with us the most is hearing different perspectives on how to apply that coming from that working group. So just a different way of thinking about things and the diversity of thought really resonates with, hey, are we actually applying this thing the right way? Should we be thinking about this differently? Cause you get a lot of, yes, people, you know, when we come and talk to people about how to apply this technology and when you have somebody with a different perspective, it's able to help us figure out what our long-term strategies are actually going to look like, but taking advantage of the resources and partnerships that we already have in place. >> In terms of that strategic vision, how do you think this three-way partnership that you mentioned is going to influence that percentage of those, these individuals who are unemployed? What are you, any predictions on how much you can bring that down with automation? >> I think that depends on Dave's staffing plan. (James laughs) But, but the goal is to grow, right? So I mean this, this is a, a startup out of Chicago that has, you know, a healthy amount of staff, but finding ways to apply those skills in new ways with technology that's emerging, the horizon is your, is your end point. Right? And I think with the advent of low-code no-code machine-learning, coming into this type of a platform, it's, it's only opportunistic, there's only, there's only things ahead of us to do that. We just have to make sure that we train people properly and give them that opportunity cause they're going to run with it with the right leadership and those skills. >> Yeah. What, what's exciting also is, is, you know, what started as an idea and a conversation that's now turned into a pilot program and a little bit of expansion of the stuff we're working on together, we've taken some of the excitement and spread it beyond that now. So we've got partners like ENY and PWC and Revature that are saying, and Specialisterne and Automattic who helped in the initial program saying, how can we help? What can we do? How can we broaden this and how can we go out to the larger community and make a bigger impact? So, you know, I think it's exciting. We know we can see how fast RPA and these types of technologies are causing change. And we got to make sure that people don't get left behind. Especially, you know, someone as this important part of a segment of a workforce. If we can equip them with these skills to be relevant to their current employers or future employers, I think it's, it's critical. You know, another like, moment for me during this process was, I took for granted, you know, what working actually means, right? It creates independence for us, right? So you get a job, you get paid and generate income. You have the independence now to go live on your own, for, provide for yourself. A lot of these individuals, I learned are still living with their parents because they can't get employment. They don't have that independence that we take for granted. So I think, again, that's the essence of what automation for good is all about is, is being able to go and make an impact like that, to that community. And it's, you know, we talk about cultures and brands and, you know, it's also great to work with an organization like Dentsu cause they get it, right? Their product is ideas. It's human capital is their, their main ingredient of what they generate value for their customers. And so be able to take that and help people is just, I think what it's all about. >> You're lucky both to be in a business that the incentives are aligned. >> Yeah. >> You're not in businesses that are designed to appropriate data and push ads in front of our face or- >> James: Yeah. >> And a lot of big companies, It's almost like, okay, we got to do this. I mean, I don't mean to overstate this, but we have to do this because we're big and we're rich. >> James: Yeah. >> And so, and if we don't, we're going to get attacked. >> James: Yeah. >> Okay, and some of it, I can check, check box and to put somebody in charge of it. >> James: Yep. >> You know, often times a woman or a person of color. And I shouldn't be negative on that. >> James: Yeah. That's fine. That's good to do. But it just seems like there's a nice alignment with automation. >> James: Oh. >> AI could be similar because I mean, yeah. It can be used for really bad. Automation, okay, maybe takes, the perception is that it takes jobs away, but it's a really nice alignment that you can point at a lot of different initiatives. >> Yeah. >> So I think that's really a fortune- >> I know that's, that's what defines a partnership, right? It's that alignment of long-term interests that, you know, you make the investments now and the sacrifices now to drive that. It's not just commercial. It's not just transactional. >> Dave: Yeah. >> We were talking about the opportunities for these types of people and for us as a customer and for UiPath, it's, it exists within that AI conversation that you were just talking about. >> Dave: Yeah. >> Because from a technical perspective, you want to mitigate as much algorithmic bias within your training models. That's what these people are doing. It, it's helping to train models much more rapidly and effectively and objectively than we could have done otherwise. And that's, having that as part of our extended partnership within our network is going to accelerate the type of work that we want to do within the releases that we're seeing coming out of this conference because we don't have to worry about oh, well, we got to focus on tax forms and training the models to notice a signature because Autonomy Works has us covered there. They're enabling us to do more. We're enabling them to do a little more. >> Hmmm. And that's, that's the beauty of this intersection between the partners. >> Brian, I presume you talk with prospective customers of UiPaths. And I presume also that you probably looked at some of their competitors. If you think about what differentiates this fast-moving company, they talked this morning about the cadence that releases. Whew, very fast. (laughing) >> Brian: Yeah, that's a lot. >> Why UiPath for Dentsu? >> UiPath has been a tremendous partner for us since about 2017. And we've been able to move on that journey with UiPath. We've been able to help understand the product roadmaps and move at a similar pace as each other. So we're really lucky in that we have the flexibility as an advertising and media company that we're not beholden to internal audits, external audits, and really defined regulatory bodies. So we made a decision, you know, what, six, seven months ago to collapse six UiPath on-prem instances and migrate to cloud with the sponsorship of our global CTO and our Amaris CTO, just because it was the right thing to do. And because it would enable this type of partnership with external providers. So being able to move at that similar pace from a release cycle, but also from a feature adoption perspective, it's, it just makes the most sense for us. And we have that liberty to go to go do those things as we need to. >> Yeah, so the move to the cloud, you get, you're able to take advantage much faster- >> James: Yeah. >> Because what did, what did we hear this morning? You release every six months? >> James: Yep. >> Yes. Which is typical for an on-prem. >> James: Yeah. >> And then, but you got to prepare for that. >> James: Yeah. I don't know how many N minus ones you support, but it's not infinite. >> James: Yeah. >> You got to move people along. So people have to prep, whereas now in the cloud, there's the feature, boom. >> Oh yeah. So being investing automation for good topic, it's not, it's about automation for good across people in general, within internally to us and externally to us, for our clients, for our employees and for our partners. The automation cloud enables that to happen much more seamlessly because we don't have the technical debt in place that requires people to VPN into our network and go through the bureaucracy of security, legal, and privacy, which we've already done by the way, for those conversations, bureaucratically still needs to happen. With automation cloud, we're able to spin up autonomy Works employees in real time and give them the right set of access to go pursue the use cases that they want to, and that we need them to. So that, that technical debt release that we've experienced through the automation cloud is what's enabling us to do this type of good work. >> It makes sense. A bit more, less friction, obviously, greater scale. >> Yeah. >> Easier to experiment. >> Yeah. >> Fail fast. >> We went from 12 separate programs to one program in a matter of a couple of months. >> It was wild. (Brian laughs) >> And I imagine you're only really scratching the surface here with what you're doing with automation. That really the horizon is the limit as you said. Session 6 Industry Success in Developing Cybersecurity-Space Resources

Welcome back to the Space and Cyber Security Symposium. 2020 I'm John for your host with the Cuban silicon angle, along with Cal Poly, representing a great session here on industry success in developing space and cybersecurity. Resource is Got a great lineup. Brigadier General Steve Hotel, whose are also known as Bucky, is Call Sign director of Space Portfolio Defense Innovation Unit. Preston Miller, chief information security officer at JPL, NASA and Major General retired Clint Crozier, director of aerospace and satellite solutions at Amazon Web services, also known as a W s. Gentlemen, thank you for for joining me today. So the purpose of this session is to spend the next hour talking about the future of workforce talent. Um, skills needed and we're gonna dig into it. And Spaces is an exciting intersection of so many awesome disciplines. It's not just get a degree, go into a track ladder up and get promoted. Do those things. It's much different now. Love to get your perspectives, each of you will have an opening statement and we will start with the Brigadier General Steve Hotel. Right? >>Thank you very much. The Defense Innovation Unit was created in 2015 by then Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. To accomplish three things. One is to accelerate the adoption of commercial technology into the Department of Defense so that we can transform and keep our most relevant capabilities relevant. And also to build what we call now called the national Security Innovation Base, which is inclusive all the traditional defense companies, plus the commercial companies that may not necessarily work with focus exclusively on defense but could contribute to our national security and interesting ways. Um, this is such an exciting time Azul here from our other speakers about space on and I can't, uh I'm really excited to be here today to be able to share a little bit of our insight on the subject. >>Thank you very much. Precedent. Miller, Chief information security officer, Jet Propulsion Lab, NASA, Your opening statement. >>Hey, thank you for having me. I would like to start off by providing just a little bit of context of what brings us. Brings us together to talk about this exciting topic for space workforce. Had we've seen In recent years there's been there's been a trend towards expanding our space exploration and the space systems that offer the great things that we see in today's world like GPS. Um, but a lot of that has come with some Asian infrastructure and technology, and what we're seeing as we go towards our next generation expects of inspiration is that we now want to ensure that were secured on all levels. And there's an acknowledgement that our space systems are just a susceptible to cyber attacks as our terrestrial assistance. We've seen a recent space, uh, policy Directive five come out from our administration, that that details exactly how we should be looking at the cyber principle for our space systems, and we want to prevent. We want to prevent a few things as a result of that of these principles. Spoofing and jamming of our space systems are not authorized commands being sent to those space systems, lots of positive control of our space vehicles on lots of mission data. We also acknowledge that there's a couple of frameworks we wanna adopt across the board of our space systems levers and things like our nice miss cybersecurity frameworks. eso what has been a challenge in the past adopted somebody Cyber principles in space systems, where there simply has been a skill gap in a knowledge gap. We hire our space engineers to do a few things. Very well designed space systems, the ploy space systems and engineer space systems, often cybersecurity is seen as a after thought and certainly hasn't been a line item and in any budget for our spaces in racing. Uh, in the past in recent years, the dynamic started to change. We're now now integrating cyber principles at the onset of development of these life cycle of space. Systems were also taking a hard look of how we train the next generation of engineers to be both adequate. Space engineers, space system engineers and a cyber engineers, as a result to Mrs success on DWI, also are taking a hard look at What do we mean when we talk about holistic risk management for our space assistance, Traditionally risk management and missing insurance for space systems? I've really revolved around quality control, but now, in recent years we've started to adopt principles that takes cyber risk into account, So this is a really exciting topic for me. It's something that I'm fortunate to work with and live with every day. I'm really excited to get into this discussion with my other panel members. Thank you. >>You Preston. Great insight there. I really appreciate that introduction and really appreciate the opportunity to be here in the Space and Cybersecurity Symposium. And thanks to Cal Poly for putting it together, you know, I can't help, but as I think to Cal Poly there on the central California coast, San Luis Obispo, California I can't help but to think back in this park quickly. I spent two years of my life as a launch squadron commander at Vandenberg Air Force Base, about an hour south of Cal Poly launching rockets, putting satellites in orbit for the national intelligence community and so some really fond memories of the Central California coast. I couldn't agree more with the theme of our symposium this week. The space and cyber security we've all come to know over the last decade. How critical spaces to the world, whether it's for national security intelligence, whether it's whether communications, maritime, agriculture, development or a whole host of other things, economic and financial transactions. But I would make the case that I think most of your listeners would agree we won't have space without cybersecurity. In other words, if we can't guaranteed cybersecurity, all those benefits that we get from space may not be there. Preston in a moment ago that all the threats that have come across in the terrestrial world, whether it be hacking or malware or ransomware or are simple network attacks, we're seeing all those migrate to space to. And so it's a really important issue that we have to pay attention to. I also want to applaud Cow Pauling. They've got some really important initiatives. The conference here, in our particular panel, is about developing the next generation of space and cyber workers, and and Cal Poly has two important programs. One is the digital transformation hub, and the other is space data solutions, both of which, I'm happy to say, are in partnership with a W. S. But these were important programs where Cal Poly looks to try to develop the next generation of space and cyber leaders. And I would encourage you if you're interested in that toe. Look up the program because that could be very valuable is well, I'm relatively new to the AWS team and I'm really happy Thio team, as John you said recently retired from the U. S. Air Force and standing up the U. S. Space force. But the reason that I mentioned that as the director of the aerospace and satellite team is again it's in perfect harmony with the theme today. You know, we've recognized that space is critically important and that cyber security is critically important and that's been a W s vision as well. In fact, a W s understands how important the space domain is and coupled with the fact that AWS is well known that at a W s security is job zero and stolen a couple of those to fax A. W. S was looking to put together a team the aerospace and satellite team that focus solely and exclusively every single day on technical innovation in space and more security for the space domain through the cloud and our offerings there. So we're really excited to reimagine agree, envision what space networks and architectures could look like when they're born on the cloud. So that's important. You know, talk about workforce here in just a moment, but but I'll give you just a quick sneak. We at AWS have also recognized the gap in the projected workforce, as Preston mentioned, Um, depending on the projection that you look at, you know, most projections tell us that the demand for highly trained cyber cyber security cloud practitioners in the future outweighs what we think is going to be the supply. And so a ws has leaned into that in a number of ways that we're gonna talk about the next segment. I know. But with our workforce transformation, where we've tried to train free of charge not just a W s workers but more importantly, our customers workers. It s a W s we obsessed over the customer. And so we've provided free training toe over 7000 people this year alone toe bring their cloud security and cyber security skills up to where they will be able to fully leverage into the new workforce. So we're really happy about that too? I'm glad Preston raised SPD five space policy Directive five. I think it's gonna have a fundamental impact on the space and cyber industry. Uh, now full disclosure with that said, You know, I'm kind of a big fan of space policy directives, ESPN, Or was the space policy directive that directed to stand up of the U. S. Space Force and I spent the last 18 months of my life as the lead planner and architect for standing up the U. S. Space force. But with that said, I think when we look back a decade from now, we're going to see that s p d five will have as much of an impact in a positive way as I think SPD for on the stand up of the space Force have already done so. So I'll leave it there, but really look forward to the dialogue and discussion. >>Thank you, gentlemen. Clint, I just wanna say thank you for all your hard work and the team and the people who were involved in standing up Space force. Um, it is totally new. It's a game changer. It's modern, is needed. And there's benefits on potential challenges and opportunities that are gonna be there, so thank you very much for doing that. I personally am excited. I know a lot of people are excited for what the space force is today and what it could become. Thank you very much. >>Yeah, Thanks. >>Okay, So >>with >>that, let me give just jump in because, you know, as you're talking about space force and cybersecurity and you spend your time at Vanderburgh launching stuff into space, that's very technical. Is operation okay? I mean, it's complex in and of itself, but if you think about like, what's going on beyond in space is a lot of commercial aspect. So I'm thinking, you know, launching stuff into space on one side of my brain and the other side of brain, I'm thinking like air travel. You know, all the logistics and the rules of the road and air traffic control and all the communications and all the technology and policy and, you >>know, landing. >>So, Major General Clint, what's your take on this? Because this is not easy. It's not just one thing that speaks to the diversity of workforce needs. What's your reaction to that? >>Yeah. I mean, your observation is right on. We're seeing a real boom in the space and aerospace industry. For all the good reasons we talked about, we're recognizing all the value space from again economic prosperity to exploration to being ableto, you know, improve agriculture and in weather and all those sorts of things that we understand from space. So what I'm really excited about is we're seeing this this blossom of space companies that we sort of referred to his new space. You know, it used to be that really only large governments like the United States and a handful of others could operate in the space domain today and largely infused because of the technological innovation that have come with Cyber and Cyrus Space and even the cloud we're seeing more and more companies, capabilities, countries, all that have the ability, you know. Even a well funded university today can put a cube sat in orbit, and Cal Poly is working on some of those too, by the way, and so it's really expanded the number of people that benefits the activity in space and again, that's why it's so critically important because we become more and more reliant and we will become more and more reliant on those capabilities that we have to protect him. It's fundamental that we do. So, >>Bucky, I want you to weigh in on this because actually, you you've flown. Uh, I got a call sign which I love interviewing people. Anyone who's a call sign is cool in my book. So, Bucky, I want you to react to that because that's outside of the technology, you know, flying in space. There's >>no >>rule. I mean, is there like a rules? I mean, what's the rules of the road? I mean, state of the right. I mean, what I mean, what what's going? What's gonna have toe happen? Okay, just logistically. >>Well, this is very important because, uh and I've I've had access thio information space derived information for most of my flying career. But the amount of information that we need operate effectively in the 21st century is much greater than Thanet has been in the past. Let me describe the environment s so you can appreciate a little bit more what our challenges are. Where, from a space perspective, we're going to see a new exponential increase in the number of systems that could be satellites. Uh, users and applications, right? And so eso we're going we're growing rapidly into an environment where it's no longer practical to just simply evolved or operate on a perimeter security model. We and with this and as I was brought up previously, we're gonna try to bring in MAWR commercial capabilities. There is a tremendous benefit with increasing the diversity of sources of information. We use it right now. The military relies very heavily on commercial SAT com. We have our military capabilities, but the commercial capabilities give us capacity that we need and we can. We can vary that over time. The same will be true for remote sensing for other broadband communications capabilities on doing other interesting effects. Also, in the modern era, we doom or operations with our friends and allies, our regional partners all around the world, in order to really improve our interoperability and have rapid exchange of information, commercial information, sources and capabilities provides the best means of doing that. So that so that the imperative is very important and what all this describes if you want to put one word on it. ISS, we're involving into ah hybrid space architectures where it's gonna be imperative that we protect the integrity of information and the cyber security of the network for the things most important to us from a national security standpoint. But we have to have the rules that that allows us to freely exchange information rapidly and in a way that that we can guarantee that the right users are getting the right information at the right. >>We're gonna come back to that on the skill set and opportunities for people driving. That's just looking. There's so much opportunity. Preston, I want you to react to this. I interviewed General Keith Alexander last year. He formerly ran Cyber Command. Um, now he's building Cyber Security Technologies, and his whole thesis is you have to share. So the question is, how do you share and lock stuff down at the same time when you have ah, multi sided marketplace in space? You know, suppliers, users, systems. This is a huge security challenge. What's your reaction to this? Because we're intersecting all these things space and cybersecurity. It's just not easy. What's your reaction? >>Absolutely, Absolutely. And what I would say in response to that first would be that security really needs to be baked into the onset of how we develop and implement and deploy our space systems. Um, there's there's always going to be the need to collect and share data across multiple entities, particularly when we're changing scientific data with our mission partners. Eso with that necessitates that we have a security view from the onset, right? We have a system spaces, and they're designed to share information across the world. How do we make sure that those, uh, those other those communication channels so secure, free from interception free from disruption? So they're really done? That necessitates of our space leaders in our cyber leaders to be joining the hip about how to secure our space systems, and the communications there in Clinton brought up a really good point of. And then I'm gonna elaborate on a little bit, just toe invite a little bit more context and talk about some the complexities and challenges we face with this advent of new space and and all of our great commercial partners coming into therefore way, that's going to present a very significant supply chain risk management problems that we have to get our hands around as well. But we have these manufacturers developing these highly specialized components for the space instruments, Um, that as it stands right now, it's very little oversight And how those things air produced, manufactured, put into the space systems communication channels that they use ports protocols that they use to communicate. And that's gonna be a significant challenge for us to get get our hands around. So again, cybersecurity being brought in. And the very onset of these development thes thes decisions in these life cycles was certainly put us in a best better position to secure that data in our in our space missions. >>Yeah, E just pick up on that. You don't mind? Preston made such a really good point there. But you have to bake security in up front, and you know there's a challenge and there's an opportunity, you know, with a lot of our systems today. It was built in a pre cyber security environment, especially our government systems that were built, you know, in many cases 10 years ago, 15 years ago are still on orbit today, and we're thankful that they are. But as we look at this new environment and we understand the threats, if we bake cybersecurity in upfront weaken balance that open application versus the risk a long as we do it up front. And you know, that's one of the reasons that our company developed what we call govcloud, which is a secure cloud, that we use thio to manage data that our customers who want to do work with the federal government or other governments or the national security apparatus. They can operate in that space with the built in and baked in cybersecurity protocols. We have a secret region that both can handle secret and top secret information for the same reasons. But when you bake security into the upfront applications, that really allows you to balance that risk between making it available and accessible in sort of an open architecture way. But being sure that it's protected through things like ITAR certifications and fed ramp, uh, another ice T certifications that we have in place. So that's just a really important point. >>Let's stay high level for a man. You mentioned a little bit of those those govcloud, which made me think about you know, the tactical edge in the military analogy, but also with space similar theater. It's just another theater and you want to stand stuff up. Whether it's communications and have facilities, you gotta do it rapidly, and you gotta do it in a very agile, secure, I high availability secure way. So it's not the old waterfall planning. You gotta be fast is different. Cloud does things different? How do you talk to the young people out there, whether it's apparent with with kids in elementary and middle school to high school, college grad level or someone in the workforce? Because there are no previous jobs, that kind of map to the needs out there because you're talking about new skills, you could be an archaeologist and be the best cyber security guru on the planet. You don't have to have that. There's no degree for what, what we're talking about here. This >>is >>the big confusion around education. I mean, you gotta you like math and you could code you can Anything who wants to comment on that? Because I think this >>is the core issue. I'll say there are more and more programs growing around that educational need, and I could talk about a few things we're doing to, but I just wanna make an observation about what you just said about the need. And how do you get kids involved and interested? Interestingly, I think it's already happening, right. The good news. We're already developing that affinity. My four year old granddaughter can walk over, pick up my iPad, turn it on. Somehow she knows my account information, gets into my account, pulls up in application, starts playing a game. All before I really even realized she had my iPad. I mean, when when kids grow up on the cloud and in technology, it creates that natural proficiency. I think what we have to do is take that natural interest and give them the skill set the tools and capabilities that go with it so that we're managing, you know, the the interest with the technical skills. >>And also, like a fast I mean, just the the hackers are getting educated. Justus fast. Steve. I mean e mean Bucky. What do you do here? You CIt's the classic. Just keep chasing skills. I mean, there are new skills. What are some of those skills? >>Why would I amplify eloquent? Just said, First of all, the, uh, you know, cyber is one of those technology areas where commercial side not not the government is really kind of leading away and does a significant amount of research and development. Ah, billions of dollars are spent every year Thio to evolve new capabilities. And a lot of those companies are, you know, operated and and in some cases, led by folks in their early twenties. So the S O. This is definitely an era and a generation that is really poised in position. Well, uh, Thio take on this challenge. There's some unique aspects to space. Once we deploy a system, uh, it will be able to give me hard to service it, and we're developing capabilities now so that we could go up and and do system upgrades. But that's not a normal thing in space that just because the the technical means isn't there yet. So having software to find capabilities, I's gonna be really paramount being able to dio unique things. The cloud is huge. The cloud is centric to this or architectural, and it's kind of funny because d o d we joke because we just discovered the cloud, you know, a couple years ago. But the club has been around for a while and, uh, and it's going to give us scalability on and the growth potential for doing amazing things with a big Data Analytics. But as Preston said, it's all for not if if we can't trust the data that we receive. And so one of the concepts for future architectures is to evolve into a zero trust model where we trust nothing. We verify and authenticate everyone. And, uh, and that's that's probably a good, uh, point of departure as we look forward into our cybersecurity for space systems into the future. >>Block everyone. Preston. Your reaction to all this gaps, skills, What's needed. I mean it Z everyone's trying to squint through this >>absolutely. And I wanna want to shift gears a little bit and talk about the space agencies and organizations that are responsible for deploying these spaces into submission. So what is gonna take in this new era on, and what do we need from the workforce to be responsive to the challenges that we're seeing? First thing that comes to mind is creating a culture of security throughout aerospace right and ensuring that Azzawi mentioned before security isn't an afterthought. It's sort of baked into our models that we deploy and our rhetoric as well, right? And because again we hire our spaces in years to do it very highly. Specialized thing for a highly specialized, uh, it's topic. Our effort, if we start to incorporate rhetorically the importance of cybersecurity two missing success and missing assurance that's going to lend itself toe having more, more prepared on more capable system engineers that will be able to respond to the threats accordingly. Traditionally, what we see in organizational models it's that there's a cyber security team that's responsible for the for the whole kit kaboodle across the entire infrastructure, from enterprise systems to specialize, specialize, space systems and then a small pocket of spaces, years that that that are really there to perform their tasks on space systems. We really need to bridge that gap. We need to think about cybersecurity holistically, the skills that are necessary for your enterprise. I t security teams need to be the same skills that we need to look for for our system engineers on the flight side. So organizationally we need we need to address that issue and approach it, um todo responsive to the challenges we see our our space systems, >>new space, new culture, new skills. One of the things I want to bring up is looking for success formulas. You know, one of the things we've been seeing in the past 10 years of doing the Cube, which is, you know, we've been called the ESPN of Tech is that there's been kind of like a game ification. I want to. I don't wanna say sports because sports is different, but you're seeing robotics clubs pop up in some schools. It's like a varsity sport you're seeing, you know, twitch and you've got gamers out there, so you're seeing fun built into it. I think Cal Poly's got some challenges going on there, and then scholarships air behind it. So it's almost as if, you know, rather than going to a private sports training to get that scholarship, that never happens. There's so many more scholarship opportunities for are not scholarship, but just job opportunities and even scholarships we've covered as part of this conference. Uh, it's a whole new world of culture. It's much different than when I grew up, which was you know, you got math, science and English. You did >>it >>and you went into your track. Anyone want to comment on this new culture? Because I do believe that there is some new patterns emerging and some best practices anyone share any? >>Yeah, I do, because as you talked about robotics clubs and that sort of things, but those were great and I'm glad those air happening. And that's generating the interest, right? The whole gaming culture generating interest Robotic generates a lot of interest. Space right has captured the American in the world attention as well, with some recent NASA activities and all for the right reasons. But it's again, it's about taking that interested in providing the right skills along the way. So I'll tell you a couple of things. We're doing it a w s that we found success with. The first one is a program called A W s Academy. And this is where we have developed a cloud, uh, program a cloud certification. This is ah, cloud curriculum, if you will, and it's free and it's ready to teach. Our experts have developed this and we're ready to report it to a two year and four year colleges that they can use is part of the curriculum free of charge. And so we're seeing some real value there. And in fact, the governor's in Utah and Arizona recently adopted this program for their two year schools statewide again, where it's already to teach curriculum built by some of the best experts in the industry s so that we can try to get that skills to the people that are interested. We have another program called A W s educate, and this is for students to. But the idea behind this is we have 12 cracks and you can get up to 50 hours of free training that lead to A W s certification, that sort of thing. And then what's really interesting about that is all of our partners around the world that have tied into this program we manage what we call it ws educate Job board. And so if you have completed this educate program now, you can go to that job board and be linked directly with companies that want people with those skills we just helped you get. And it's a perfect match in a perfect marriage there. That one other piece real quickly that we're proud of is the aws Uh restart program. And that's where people who are unemployed, underemployed or transitioning can can go online. Self paced. We have over 500 courses they can take to try to develop those initial skills and get into the industry. And that's been very popular, too, So that those air a couple of things we're really trying to lean into >>anyone else want to react. Thio that question patterns success, best practices, new culture. >>I'd like Thio. The the wonderful thing about what you just touched on is problem solving, right, And there's some very, very good methodologies that are being taught in the universities and through programs like Hacking for Defense, which is sponsored by the National Security Innovation Network, a component of the I you where I work but the But whether you're using a lien methodologies or design school principals or any other method, the thing that's wonderful right now and not just, uh, where I work at the U. The Space force is doing this is well, but we're putting the problem out there for innovators to tackle, And so, rather than be prescriptive of the solutions that we want to procure, we want we want the best minds at all levels to be able to work on the problem. Uh, look at how they can leverage other commercial solutions infrastructure partnerships, uh, Thio to come up with a solution that we can that we can rapidly employ and scale. And if it's a dual use solution or whether it's, uh, civil military or or commercial, uh, in any of the other government solutions. Uh, that's really the best win for for the nation, because that commercial capability again allows us to scale globally and share those best practices with all of our friends and allies. People who share our values >>win win to this commercial. There's a business model potential financial benefits as well. Societal impact Preston. I want to come to you, JPL, NASA. I mean, you work in one of the most awesome places and you know, to me, you know, if you said to me, Hey, John, come working JP like I'm not smart enough to go there like I mean, like, it's a pretty It's intimidating, it might seem >>share folks out there, >>they can get there. I mean, it's you can get there if you have the right skills. I mean I'm just making that up. But, I mean, it is known to be super smart And is it attainable? So share your thoughts on this new culture because you could get the skills to get there. What's your take on all this >>s a bucket. Just missing something that really resonated with me, right? It's do it your love office. So if you put on the front engineer, the first thing you're gonna try to do is pick it apart. Be innovative, be creative and ways to solve that issue. And it has been really encouraging to me to see the ground welcome support an engagement that we've seen across our system. Engineers in space. I love space partners. A tackling the problem of cyber. Now that they know the West at risk on some of these cyber security threats that that they're facing with our space systems, they definitely want to be involved. They want to take the lead. They want to figure things out. They wanna be innovative and creative in that problem solving eso jpl We're doing a few things. Thio Raise the awareness Onda create a culture of security. Andi also create cyber advocates, cybersecurity advocates across our space engineers. We host events like hacked the lad, for example, and forgive me. Take a pause to think about the worst case scenarios that could that could result from that. But it certainly invites a culture of creative problem solving. Um, this is something that that kids really enjoy that are system engineers really enjoyed being a part off. Um, it's something that's new refreshing to them. Eso we were doing things like hosting a monthly cybersecurity advocacy group. When we talk about some of the cyber landscape of our space systems and invite our engineers into the conversation, we do outweighs programs specifically designed to to capture, um, our young folks, uh, young engineers to deceive. They would be interested and show them what this type of security has to offer by ways of data Analytic, since the engineering and those have been really, really successful identifying and bringing in new talent to address the skill gaps. >>Steve, I want to ask you about the d. O. D. You mentioned some of the commercial things. How are you guys engaging the commercial to solve the space issue? Because, um, the normalization in the economy with GPS just seeing spaces impacts everybody's lives. We we know that, um, it's been talked about. And and there's many, many examples. How are you guys the D o. D. From a security standpoint and or just from an advancement innovation standpoint, engaging with commercials, commercial entities and commercial folks? >>Well, I'll throw. I'll throw a, uh, I'll throw ah, compliment to Clint because he did such an outstanding job. The space forces already oriented, uh, towards ah, commercial where it's appropriate and extending the arms. Leveraging the half works on the Space Enterprise Consortium and other tools that allow for the entrepreneurs in the space force Thio work with their counterparts in a commercial community. And you see this with the, uh, you know, leveraging space X away to, uh, small companies who are doing extraordinary things to help build space situational awareness and, uh, s So it's it's the people who make this all happen. And what we do at at the D. O. D level, uh, work at the Office of Secretary defense level is we wanna make sure that they have the right tools to be able to do that in a way that allows these commercial companies to work with in this case of a space force or with cyber command and ways that doesn't redefine that. The nature of the company we want we want We want commercial companies to have, ah, great experience working with d o d. And we want d o d toe have the similar experience working, working with a commercial community, and and we actually work interagency projects to So you're going to see, uh, General Raymond, uh, hey, just recently signed an agreement with the NASA Esa, you're gonna see interagency collaborations on space that will include commercial capabilities as well. So when we speak as one government were not. You know, we're one voice, and that's gonna be tremendous, because if you're a commercial company on you can you can develop a capability that solves problems across the entire space enterprise on the government side. How great is that, Right. That's a scaling. Your solution, gentlemen. Let >>me pick you back on that, if you don't mind. I'm really excited about that. I mentioned new space, and Bucky talked about that too. You know, I've been flying satellites for 30 years, and there was a time where you know the U. S. Government national security. We wouldn't let anybody else look at him. Touch him. Plug into, um, anything else, right. And that probably worked at the time. >>But >>the world has changed. And more >>importantly, >>um, there is commercial technology and capability available today, and there's no way the U. S government or national security that national Intel community can afford economically >>to >>fund all that investment solely anymore. We don't have the manpower to do it anymore. So we have this perfect marriage of a burgeoning industry that has capabilities and it has re sources. And it has trained manpower. And we are seeing whether it's US Space Force, whether it's the intelligence community, whether it's NASA, we're seeing that opened up to commercial providers more than I've ever seen in my career. And I can tell you the customers I work with every day in a W s. We're building an entire ecosystem now that they understand how they can plug in and participate in that, and we're just seeing growth. But more importantly, we're seeing advanced capability at cheaper cost because of that hybrid model. So that really is exciting. >>Preston. You know you mentioned earlier supply chain. I don't think I think you didn't use the word supply chain. Maybe you did. But you know about the components. Um, you start opening things up and and your what you said baking it in to the beginning, which is well known. Uh, premise. It's complicated. So take me through again, Like how this all gonna work securely because And what's needed for skill sets because, you know, you're gonna open. You got open source software, which again, that's open. We live in a free society in the United States of America, so we can't lock everything down. You got components that are gonna be built anywhere all around the world from vendors that aren't just a certified >>or maybe >>certified. Um, it's pretty crazy. So just weigh in on this key point because I think Clint has it right. And but that's gonna be solved. What's your view on this? >>Absolutely. And I think it really, really start a top, right? And if you look back, you know, across, um in this country, particularly, you take the financial industry, for example, when when that was a burgeoning industry, what had to happen to ensure that across the board. Um, you know, your your finances were protected these way. Implemented regulations from the top, right? Yeah. And same thing with our health care industry. We implemented regulations, and I believe that's the same approach we're gonna need to take with our space systems in our space >>industry >>without being too directive or prescriptive. Instance she ating a core set of principles across the board for our manufacturers of space instruments for deployment and development of space systems on for how space data and scientific data is passed back and forth. Eso really? We're gonna need to take this. Ah, holistic approach. Thio, how we address this issue with cyber security is not gonna be easy. It's gonna be very challenging, but we need to set the guard rails for exactly what goes into our space systems, how they operate and how they communicate. >>Alright, so let's tie this back to the theme, um, Steve and Clint, because this is all about workforce gaps, opportunities. Um, Steve, you mentioned software defined. You can't do break fix in space. You can't just send a technician up in the space to fix a component. You gotta be software defined. We're talking about holistic approach, about commercial talk about business model technology with software and policy. We need people to think through, like you know. What the hell are you gonna do here, right? Do you just noticed road at the side of the road to drive on? There's no rules of engagement. So what I'm seeing is certainly software Check. If you wanna have a job for the next millennial software policy who solves two problems, what does freedom looked like in space Congestion Contention and then, obviously, business model. Can you guys comment on these three areas? Do you agree? And what specific person might be studying in grad school or undergraduate or in high school saying, Hey, I'm not a techie, but they can contribute your thoughts. I'll >>start off with, uh, speak on on behalf of the government today. I would just say that as policy goes, we need to definitely make sure that we're looking towards the future. Ah, lot of our policy was established in the past under different conditions, and, uh, and if there's anything that you cannot say today is that space is the same as it was even 10 years ago. So the so It's really important that our policy evolves and recognizes that that technology is going to enable not just a new ways of doing things, but also force us to maybe change or or get rid of obsolete policies that will inhibit our ability to innovate and grow and maintain peace with with a rapid, evolving threat. The for the for the audience today, Uh, you know, you want some job assurance, cybersecurity and space it's gonna be It's gonna be an unbelievable, uh, next, uh, few decades and I couldn't think of a more exciting for people to get into because, you know, spaces Ah, harsh environment. We're gonna have a hard time just dud being able differentiate, you know, anomalies that occur just because of the environment versus something that's being hacked. And so JPL has been doing this for years on they have Cem Cem great approaches, but but this is this is gonna be important if you put humans on the moon and you're going to sustain them there. Those life support systems are gonna be using, you know, state of the art computer technology, and which means, is also vulnerable. And so eso the consequences of us not being prepared? Uh, not just from our national security standpoint, but from our space exploration and our commercial, uh, economic growth in space over the long term all gonna be hinged on this cyber security environment. >>Clint, your thoughts on this too ill to get. >>Yeah. So I certainly agree with Bucky. But you said something a moment ago that Bucky was talking about as well. But that's the idea that you know in space, you can't just reach out and touch the satellite and do maintenance on the satellite the way you can't a car or a tank or a plane or a ship or something like that. And that is true. However, right, comma, I want to point out. You know, the satellite servicing industry is starting to develop where they're looking at robotic techniques in Cape abilities to go up in services satellite on orbit. And that's very promising off course. You got to think through the security policy that goes with that, of course. But the other thing that's really exciting is with artificial intelligence and machine learning and edge computing and database analytics and all those things that right on the cloud. You may not even need to send a robotic vehicle to a satellite, right? If you can upload and download software defined, fill in the blank right, maybe even fundamentally changing the mission package or the persona, if you will, of the satellite or the spacecraft. And that's really exciting to, ah, lot >>of >>security policy that you've gotta work through. But again, the cloud just opens up so many opportunities to continue to push the boundaries. You know, on the AWS team, the aerospace and satellite team, which is, you know, the new team that I'm leading. Now our motto is to the stars through the cloud. And there are just so many exciting opportunities right for for all those capabilities that I just mentioned to the stars through the cloud >>President, your thoughts on this? >>Yes, eso won >>a >>little bit of time talking about some of the business model implications and some of the challenges that exists there. Um, in my experience, we're still working through a bit of a language barrier of how we define risk management for our space systems. Traditionally traditionally risk management models is it is very clear what poses a risk to a flight mission. Our space mission, our space system. Um, and we're still finding ways to communicate cyber risk in the same terms that are system engineers are space engineers have traditionally understood. Um, this is a bit of a qualitative versus quantitative, a language barrier. But however adopting a risk management model that includes cybersecurity, a za way to express wish risk to miss the success, I think I think it would be a very good thing is something that that we have been focused on the J. P o as we Aziz, we look at the 34 years beyond. How do >>we >>risk that gap and not only skills but communication of cyber risk and the way that our space engineers and our project engineers and a space system managers understand >>Clinton, like Thio talk about space Force because this is the most popular new thing. It's only a couple of nine months in roughly not even a year, uh, already changing involving based on some of the reporting we've done even here at this symposium and on the Internet. Um, you know, when I was growing up, you know, I wasn't there when JFK said, you know, we're gonna get to the moon. I was born in the sixties, so, you know, when I was graduating my degree, you know, Draper Labs, Lincoln Lab, JPL, their pipeline and people wasn't like a surge of job openings. Um, so this kind of this new space new space race, you know, Kennedy also said that Torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans. So in a way that's happening right now with space force. A new generation is here is a digital generation. It's multi disciplinary generation. Could you take a minute and share, uh, for for our audience? And here at this symposium, um, the mission of Space Force and where you see it going because this truly is different. And I think anyone who's young e I mean, you know, if this was happening when I was in college would be like dropping everything. I'm in there, I think, cause there's so many areas thio jump into, um, it's >>intellectually challenging. >>It's intoxicating in some level. So can you share your thoughts? >>Yeah. Happy to do that. Of course. I I need to remind everybody that as a week ago I'm formally retired. So I'm not an official spokesman for US forces. But with that, you know, it said I did spend the last 18 months planning for it, designing and standing it up. And I'll tell you what's really exciting is you know, the commander of, uh, US Base Force General J. Raymond, who's the right leader at the right time. No question in my >>mind. But >>he said, I want to stand up the Space Force as the first fully digital service in the United States. Right? So he is trying >>to bake >>cloud baked cybersecurity, baked digital transformational processes and everything we did. And that was a guidance he gave us every day, every day. When we rolled in. He said, Remember, guys, I don't wanna be the same. I don't wanna be stale. I want new thinking, new capabilities and I want it all to be digital on. That's one of the reasons When we brought the first wave of people into the space force, we brought in space operations, right. People like me that flew satellites and launch rockets, we brought in cyber space experts, and we brought in intelligence experts. Those were the first three waves of people because of that, you know, perfect synergy between space and cyber and intel all wrapped in >>it. >>And so that was really, really smart. The other thing I'll say just about, you know, Kennedy's work. We're going to get to the moon. So here we are. Now we're going back to the Moon Project Artemus that NASA is working next man first woman on the moon by 2024 is the plan and >>then >>with designs to put a permanent presence on the moon and then lean off to march. So there was a lot to get excited about. I will tell you, as we were taking applications and looking at rounding out filling out the village in the U. S. Space Force, we were overwhelmed with the number of people that wanted, and that was a really, really good things. So they're off to a good start, and they're just gonna accomplishment major things. I know for sure. >>Preston, your thoughts on this new generation people out there were like I could get into this. This is a path. What's your what's your opinion on this? And what's your >>E could, uh, you so bold as to say >>that >>I feel like I'm a part of that new generation eso I grew up very much into space. Uh, looking at, um, listen to my, uh, folks I looked up to like Carl Sagan. Like like Neil Tyson. DeGrasse on did really feeling affinity for what What this country has done is for is a space program are focused on space exploration on bond. Through that, I got into our security, as it means from the military. And I just because I feel so fortunate that I could merge both of those worlds because of because of the generational, um, tailoring that we do thio promote space exploration and also the advent of cybersecurity expertise that is needed in this country. I feel like that. We are We are seeing a conversions of this too. I see a lot of young people really getting into space exploration. I see a lot of young people as well. Um uh, gravitating toward cybersecurity as a as a course of study. And to see those two worlds colliding and converse is something that's very near and dear to me. And again, I I feel like I'm a byproduct of that conversion, which is which, Really, Bothwell for space security in the future, >>we'll your great leader and inspiration. Certainly. Senior person as well. Congratulations, Steve. You know, young people motivational. I mean, get going. Get off the sidelines. Jump in Water is fine, Right? Come on in. What's your view on motivating the young workforce out there and anyone thinking about applying their skills on bringing something to the table? >>Well, look at the options today. You have civil space President represents you have military space. Uh, you have commercial space on and even, you know, in academia, the research, the potential as a as an aspiring cyber professional. All of you should be thinking about when we when we When? When we first invented the orbit, which eventually became the Internet, Uh, on Lee, we were, uh if all we had the insight to think Well, geez, you know whether the security implications 2030 years from now of this thing scaling on growing and I think was really good about today's era. Especially as Clint said, because we were building this space infrastructure with a cyber professionals at ground zero on dso the So the opportunity there is to look out into the future and say we're not just trying to secure independent her systems today and assure the free for all of of information for commerce. You know, the GPS signal, Uh, is Justus much in need of protection as anything else tied to our economy, But the would have fantastic mission. And you could do that. Uh, here on the ground. You could do it, uh, at a great companies like Amazon Web services. But you can also one of these states. Perhaps we go and be part of that contingency that goes and does the, uh, the se's oh job that that president has on the moon or on Mars and, uh, space will space will get boring within a generation or two because they'll just be seen as one continuum of everything we have here on Earth. And, uh, and that would be after our time. But in the meantime, is a very exciting place to be. And I know if I was in in my twenties, I wanna be, uh, jumping in with both feet into it. >>Yeah, great stuff. I mean, I think space is gonna be around for a long long time. It's super exciting and cybersecurity making it secure. And there's so many areas defeating on. Gentlemen, thank you very much for your awesome insight. Great panel. Um, great inspiration. S now heading up. as Preston mentioned, Um, depending on the projection that you Clint, I just wanna say thank you for all your hard work and the team and all the communications and all the technology and policy and, you It's not just one thing that speaks to the diversity of workforce needs. countries, all that have the ability, you know. outside of the technology, you know, flying in space. I mean, state of the right. in the modern era, we doom or operations with our friends and allies, So the question is, how do you share and talk about some the complexities and challenges we face with this advent of new space and and environment, especially our government systems that were built, you know, in many cases 10 years ago, You mentioned a little bit of those those govcloud, which made me think about you I mean, you gotta you like math and that we're managing, you know, the the interest with the technical skills. And also, like a fast I mean, just the the hackers are getting educated. And a lot of those companies are, you know, operated and and in some cases, Your reaction to all this gaps, skills, What's needed. I t security teams need to be the same skills that we need to look for for our system engineers on the flight One of the things I want to bring up is looking for success formulas. and you went into your track. But the idea behind this is we have 12 cracks and you can get up to Thio that question patterns success, best practices, And so, rather than be prescriptive of the solutions that we want to procure, if you said to me, Hey, John, come working JP like I'm not smart enough to go there like I mean, I mean, it's you can get there if you landscape of our space systems and invite our engineers into the conversation, we do outweighs programs Steve, I want to ask you about the d. O. D. You mentioned some of the commercial things. The nature of the company we You know, I've been flying satellites for 30 years, and there was a time where you the world has changed. and there's no way the U. S government or national security that national Intel community can afford And I can tell you the customers I work with every You got components that are gonna be built anywhere all around the world And but that's gonna be solved. May always >> Great to be with you guys. >> All right, So I gotta ask you because, you know, Dave and I were talking on yesterday's kickoff on our intro about the conversation we had. I think six years ago we saw you standing there in Austin, but still a public company didn't go private yet. And then the series of moves going private and we're like, That's great. Get behind the curtain. Get things reset. Look at the cash flows. Looking good. You had the clear plan as the founder and CEO is kind of a new kind of reset, if you will. And then up to now the execution in just the series of moves. When you look back now where you are today, where you were then how do you feel? What's absurd? What did you learn? What's some of the highlights for you? >> Well, look, we feel great, You know, our business is really grown tremendously. It's all the things we've been doing has been resonating with customers have been ableto, I would say, restored the origins of the entrepreneurial dream and success of the company and reintroduce, uh, innovation and risk taking into, ah, now ninety one billion dollars company growing in double digits last year and certainly the set of capabilities. That way, we've been able to build organically and in organically on DH with set of alliances. We have the trust that customers have given us, you know, super happy about the position that we're in and the opportunities going forward. As I've said, you know, a zay said Mikey. No, yesterday. I think all this is really just the pregame show. Tow what's ahead for our industry and for the role that technology is going to play in the world. >> And the role of data you mentioned also used to quote you Yes, that you said data a CZ the life, blood of digital transformation of the heartbeat, visual transformation and It's also revitalizing all the other components of what looked like a consolidated market is now actually being reborn the PC, technology, infrastructure, fabrics and other software opportunity. So Data has kind of brought in a whole nother level of kind of revitalisation and the industry, which is actually causing more investment in what looked like older category of you know it and computers whatnot. This's been a big, big tailwind for you guys. >> Well, data has always been at the centre of you know how the technology industry works and now we just have a tsunami explosion of data. And of course, now we have this new computer science that allows us Teo reason over the data in real time and create much better results in outcomes and that combined with the computing power, all organizations have to reimagine themselves, given all these technologies and certainly the infrastructure requirements in terms of the network, you know, the storage, that computer bill out of the edge, tons of new requirements, and we're super well positioned to go address all that. >> I enjoyed your keynote, Michael. So I thought it was excellent. One of your better ones and you painted a picture of tech for good. Uh, really life changing things that you guys and your customers are doing. You gave some examples that be an example of example was great Draper Labs. But you also paid a picture. You need a platform for this digital transformation. We've seen the numbers. Eighty percent of the workloads are still on Prem. What do you think that looks like ten years down the road? What do you What's your vision say? >> Well, the surprise outcome ten years from now is they'LL be something much bigger than the private cloud and Public Cloud. It's the edge and actually think that would be way more computer data on the edge in ten years than any of the, you know, derivatives of cloud that we want to talk about. So that's a ten year prediction. Yeah, that's that's That's kind of what I see. And maybe maybe nobody's predicting that this yet, But, you know, let's come back in ten years and see what it looks like. >> So I like to do that hybrid hybrid. Klaus been around for a while, but talked about. It's been kind of operating, Ma. We see that multi cloud is really kind of surged in importance in conversations because I think people wake up and go. Hey, I got multiple clouds. I got azure over here for ofthis three sixty five. I got some Amazon over here. I got some home grown stuff over here. I got a data center so that people kind of generally Khun, Khun, relate to the reality of multi cloud hybrid. Live it more of a different kind of twist, but certainly relevant. But multi cloud has got everyone's attention and you guys launched Del Cloud. Is that a multi cloud, or is that a cloud to multiple clouds? Explain your view on that and where this goes. >> So really, what we're doing is we're bringing to customers. All the resource is they need to operate in the hybrid, multi cloud world. And first, you have to recognize that the workloads want to move around and to say that they're all going to be here, or there is in some sense, missing the point because they're going to move back and forth. And, uh, you know, you've got regulation cost security performance late and see all sorts of new requirements that air coming at you and they're not going to just sit, sit in one place. Now, as you know, with via Work Cloud Foundation, we have the ability to move these workloads seamlessly across. Now, essentially all the public clouds, right. Forty, two hundred partners out there infrastructure on premise built and tuned specifically for the VM wear platform and empowered also for the edge and a love. This together is the Del Technologies Cloud. We have obviously great, uh, capabilities from our Delhi emcee infrastructure solutions and all the great innovations that Veum where coming together >> scale has been a topic. We talked on the Cube many years. We saw Amazon get scale with public cloud scales of competitive advantage is now becoming kind of table stakes both for customers trying to figure out how to operate a digital scale, speed a life. You guys have a scale level now that's pretty impressive. What you guys done with the puzzle pieces, You cut puzzle pieces, you know, cos capabilities now across the board, as you guys look at scale is a competitive advantage, which it is, and we talked about this before. You now have to integrate seamlessly in these pieces. So as you compose as customers compose the variety of capabilities. It's gotta be frictionless. That's a goal. How do you look at that? How do you talk to your team's about this on DH? What's your view on scale? And is this something you guys talk about inside the company? >> Well, inside the business, you know, the first priority was to get each of the individual pieces working well. But then we saw that the real opportunity was in the scenes on how we could more deeply integrate all the aspects of what we're doing together. And you saw that on stage, you know, in vivid form yesterday with Pat and Jeff and Sasha and even more today again. And there's more to do. There's, although there's always more to do. Were working on how we build a gate, a platform bringing together all of our capabilities with Bhumi and data protection on DH bm wear, and this is all going to be super important way. Enter this A I enabled age of the future. >> Michael, you got a track record of creating shareholder value. We're big fans of, you know, we'LL have CNBC on in the office and Michael's on everybody coming across, right? Davos? Picky, Quick. We're also big fans have asked you to sort of knocked down to three criticisms. And sure, it was really a conversation about stock price, you know? And you Did you knock down the debt structure? The low margin business, the ownership structure, its center. But you never came backto stock price, so it looks like a couple of ways to invest. Now VM wear directly. Also looks like Veum where you could you could buy cheaply through Del What your thoughts on on that? You know where Dell sits in the market today? Its value. >> I think. You know, investors are increasingly understanding that we've created an incredible business here and certainly, you know, if we look at the additional coverage that we have and you know, they're they're a CZ their understanding, the business, you know, some of the analysts are starting to say, Hey, this doesn't really feel like a conglomerate. Direct quote. Okay. And, uh, if you think about what we demonstrated today, yesterday and we'LL demonstrate the future, you know, we're not like Berkshire Hathaway or, uh you know, uh, this is not a railroad that owns a chain of restaurants. This is one integrated business that fits together incredibly well, and you know it's generating substantial cash flows. And, you know, I think investors overtime are figuring out value. That's intrinsic. Teo, the overall Del Technologies family now wave Got lots of ways to invest, right? Get, Be aware. SecureWorks pivotal. And, of course, the overall Del Technologies. >> Yeah, and just a follow up on that. I mean, I've observed on the margin side I mean, when del went private, it was around nineteen percent gross margins. Now you're in gross margin heaven, you know, absorbing the emcee. And it seems to be headed in the right right direction. So it's a nice mix >> know, in our in our cloud, an infrastructure group, almost ninety percent of the engineers are software engineers. And so you think aboutthe innovations you saw in states today with power Macs and Unity, X T and our power protect platform. You know, basically all software running on power power it surfers and platforms that we've created. >> What's on your plate now, Michael? As you come out, come out of Del Technologies world. You got business to take care of what your goals what's on your plate. What's your object? Is what you trying to accomplish in the next year? >> Well, certainly continuing to execute for our customers growing faster than the industry. You know, maintaining and improving our customer NPS levels and keeping the innovation engine cranked up on high. You saw a lot today on DH yesterday. Stay tuned, Veum. World's coming in in August and they'LL be much, much more way Continue toe innovate together Lucy with Veum where so we've got we've got lots more in the cube >> and you got cash will come in, which means your suppliers to a lot of customers Congratulations. I want to get your final thought on my final question on the Tech for good One of the things I saw yesterday on the Kino that you gave was that popped out wass. It wasn't about the speeds and feeds around, you know, the performances get great performance on the tech side. You gotta be, you know, the infrastructure level Scott be performing, but it's about solving problems. And I think this is a direction that you're taking the company saying there's outcomes out there. The problems that can be solved with tech We're hearing a whole tech for bad narrative in the media these days. Tax evil text. Bad. But there are awesome spots where technology is creating great things for society. This is a theme for you. Can you share? Why that focus? And when some of the highlights >> it's right. I mean, if you if you step back from the what happened in the last twenty four hours, twenty four days and even twenty four months, you start looking at, you know, twenty four years you start to see is thie. Outcomes for humanity have gotten dramatically better, and technologies played an enormous role in that. I'm massively optimistic that in the next three decades they're going to be really miracles. In terms of how do you dress things like deafness and blindness and paralysis with a I and embedded technology inside the body. The, you know, things were able to do now with sequencing the genome and using all this data to create personalized medicine solutions. Yes, technology can be used for bad, but the vast majority of it is used for good by people that have good in their hearts. Right. And and, uh, you know, uh, it goes beyond making great businesses and making people more productive. It's actually changing lives and very positive ways, >> while the other big narrative in the pressure here is automation and taking away jobs. And it's a serious concern. However, you know there's no reason to protect the past from from the future and this great opportunities ahead education and someone, even you and Susan but big supporters of that, obviously. So we're optimistic for the future. I know I know you are. The best is yet to come. As I'd like to say >> Absolutely, we agree. >> Once an entrepreneur, always an entrepreneur, you great entrepreneurial track record you celebrate thirty five years from the original dorm room. So some of your Facebook posts now here he took a business that you knew T mature couple players. This is a trend we're seeing. Zoom communication just went public. They took video streaming and holding meetings and completely when cloud base and disrupted it. You saw >> runs on Dell EMC by the way >> runs on Dell, did not know that it's only a lot of Michael great, but this is an entre. I want to get your advice to other articles that might be watching us because you now, with the technology with data and cloud and tech, you, Khun, go into existing markets that don't look good on paper that people might dismiss as that's over. That's a mature market You've certainly taken Del Technology's got all the pieces and are executing at a home of the level. Zoom did it for video on the cloud. There are zillions of these opportunities out there that entrepreneurs. So the advice don't be discouraged by what looks like a big fat market. So your what's your advice?  >> and I I feel something is coming. That's quite significant. And right now you mentioned this new wave of companies that air coming public and they were built on a foundation of technology infrastructure capabilities. You know that was established, Let's say, ten years ago. Okay, well, right now we're just at the kind of beginning of five G and A II technology, and all these embedded sensors and low latent see communications, and there will be a whole another wave of cos I suspect many, many more across all industries that, you know, just unlock all kinds of new capabilities and an opportunity. So I'm super excited about that. Andi, I think I think it's it's just going to get more interesting. >> It's amazing to think of the tools you had thirty five years ago, when you started and how you've transformed. There's about 4,000 of the Dell Technologies community of partners here as well. Day one as I mentioned, we're very pleased to welcome back one of our cube alumni, Karen Quintos, EVP and Chief Customer Officer from Dell Technologies, Karen, welcome back to theCUBE. >> Thank you, thank you. Always great to be with you all. >> So one of the things you walk down on stage this morning with Michael Dell and and the whole gang and you started to share a story that I'd love for you to share with our audience about this darling little girl, Phoebe from Manchester, England that has to do with this Dell Technologies partnership with Deloitte Detroit and 3D prosthetics. Can you share this story and what it meant about this partnership. >> Well we wanted to tell this story about Phoebe because we really wanted the audience to understand the innovation and all of what's done it with social good is really about the individual, You know, technology plays a key role but the face behind the technology and the innovation are people and you know, as you mention Phoebe is from Manchester, U.K. Her father wrote this blog about Phoebe's experience. Phoebe's aunt, Claire works for Deloitte. She had access to a lot of what they could do in terms of 3D printing and basically came to Dell and we were able to take it and scale it and accelerate it and speed it up with a engineer by the name of Seamus who saw what the precision workstation could do. So it was this small idea to help an amazing little girl like this that has now turned into this movement around how do we more rapidly, quickly scale 3D prosthetics so these children and adults can have a chance at a normal life so. >> What kind of prosthetics did you guys build for her? >> It's an arm, so the very first arm that we built for her when she was about five years old had the frozen Disney theme painted on it. I asked her father Keith what is the one that she's wearing now because she's now this like really super cool seven-year-old that goes to school and all of her classmates and friends around her see her as this rock star and the one that she has today is printed with unicorns and rainbows. So if you know anything about seven-year-old girls, it's all about unicorns and rainbows and she's done an amazing thing and she's inspired so many other people around the world, individuals, customers, partners like Deloitte and others that we're working with to really take this to a whole new level. >> Karen, I think back to Dell you know, if you think back a couple of decades ago you know, drove a lot of the some of the waves of technology change you know, think back to the PC, but in the early days it was you know supply chain and simple ordering in all these environments and when I've watched Dell move into the enterprise, a lot of that is, I need to be listening to my customer, I need to be much closer to them because it's not just ordering your SKU and having it faster and at a reasonable price but there's a lot more customization. Can you talk about how you're kind of putting that center, that customer in the center of the discussion and that feedback loops that you have with them, how that's changed in Dell. >> Yeah sure, so all of the basic fundamentals around you got to order, deliver, make the supply chain work to deliver for our customers still matters but it's gone beyond that to your point and probably the best way to talk about it is these six customer award winners that we recognized last night. I've gotten to know all six of those over the last year and while they are doing amazing things from a digital transformation using technology in the travel business, the automotive business, banking, financial services, insurance, kind of across the board, the thing that they say consistently is look, we didn't always have the answer in terms of what we needed but you came in, you listened, you rolled up your sleeves to try to figure out how you could design a solution that would meet the needs that we have and they said, that's why you're one of the most strategic partners that we have. Now you can do all those other things, right? You can supply chain ride and build and produce and all that but it's the design of a solution that helps us do the things that will allow us to be differentiated and you look at that list of six customers and brands that they represent, right, Carnival Cruise Lines, USAA, Bradesco, McLaren I mean, the list kind of goes on, they are the differentiators out there and we're really honored to be able to be working with them. >> So we're only a day one and it's only just after lunchtime but one of the things I think somatically that I heard this morning in the keynote with Michael and Pat and Jeff and Satya and yourself is, it's all about people. A couple interviews I did earlier today, same sort of thing, it's like we had the city of Las Vegas on. This is all driven by the people in for the people so that sense of community is really strong. I also noticed this year's theme of real transformation, parlays off last year's theme of make it real, it being digital transformation, IT, security, workforce transformation, what are some of the things that were like at Dell Technologies. Cloud this morning for example, VMware Cloud on Dell EMC that you guys specifically heard say from last year's attendees that are manifesting in some of the announcements today and some of the great things the 15 or so thousand people here are going to get to see and feel and touch at this year's event? >> Well, Lisa you nailed it. What you heard on stage today is what customers have been telling us over the last year. We unveiled about a month ago with a very small group of CIOs in Amia, our cloud strategy, our portfolio, the things that we're going to be able to do and one customer in particular immediately chimed in and said, we need you in the cloud and we need you in there now because you offer choice, you offer open, you offer simplicity, you offer integration and they're like, there's just too many choices and a lot of them are expensive. So what you heard on stage is absolutely a manifestation of what they told us. The other pieces, look, I think I think the industry and CIOs are very quickly realizing their workforce matters, making them happy and productive matters having them enabled that they can work flexibly wherever they want to really, really matters and you know, our Unified Workspace ONE solution is all about how we help them simplify, automate, streamline that experience with their workforce so their employees stick around. I mean, there's a war on talent and everybody's dealing with it and that experience is really, really important in particular to the gensies and the millennials. >> Karen, I love that point. Actually, I was really impressed this morning. In the press and analyst session this morning, there was a discussion of diversity and inclusion and the thing that I heard is, it's a business imperative, it's not, okay it's nice to do it or we should do it but no, this is actually critical to the business. Can you talk about what that means and what you hear from your customers and partners. >> Yes, yes, well, we're seeing it in spades and all of these technology jobs that are open, right. So look, all the research has shown that if you build a diverse team, you'll get to a more innovative solution and people generally get that but what they really get today is here in the U.S. alone, there's 1.1 million open technology jobs by the year 2024, half of them, half of them are going to be filled by the existing workforce. So there is this war in talent that is going to get bigger and bigger and bigger and I think that's what really has given a wake-up call to corporations around why this matters. I think the other piece that we're starting to see, not just around diversity but in our other social impact priorities around the environment as well as how we use our technology for good, look, customers want to do business with a corporation that has a soul and they stand for something and they're doing something, not just a bunch of talking heads but where it's really turning into action and they're being transparent about the journeys and where they're at with it. So it matters now to the current generation, the next generation, it matters to business leaders, matters to the financial services community, which you start to see you know, some of the momentum around you know, the black stones and state street. So it's really exciting that we're part of it and we're leading the way in a lot of number of areas. >> And it's something to that we talked about a lot on theCUBE, diversity and inclusion from many different levels, one of them being the business imperative that you talked about, the workforce needing to compete for this talent, but also how much different products and technologies and apps and APS and things can be with just thought diversity in and of itself and I think it's refreshing to what Stu was saying, hey, we're hearing this is a business imperative but you're also seeing proof in the pudding. This isn't just, we've got an imperative and we're going to do things nominally, you're seeing the efforts manifest. One of the, Draper Labs who was one of the customer award winners. That video that was shown this morning struck probably everyone's heart with the campfire in Paradise California. >> Tragic. >> I grew up close to there and that was something that only maybe, I get goosebumps, six months ago, so massively devastating and we think you know, that was 2018 but seeing how Dell Technologies is enabling this laboratory to investigate the potential toxins coming from all of this chart debris and how they're working to understand the social impact to all of us as they rebuild, I just thought it was a really nice manifestation of a social impact but also the technology breadth and differentiation that Dell has enabling. >> That was also why this story today was so great about Phoebe, right because it's where you can connect the human spirit with technology and scale and have an even bigger impact and there's so much that technology can help with today. You know, that that story about Phoebe. From the time that her aunt from Deloitte identified, you know, what we could do, all the way to the time that Phoebe got her first arm was less than seven months, seven months and you think about you know, some of the other prototypes that were out there, times would take years to be able to do it. So I love that you know, connection of human need with the human spirit and connecting and inspiring and motivating so many children and adults around the world. >> And what what are some of the next, speaking of Phoebe and the Deloitte digital 3D prosthetics partnership, what are some of the other areas we're going to see this technology that this little five-year-old from Manchester spurned. >> Well, I'll give you another example. So we, there was an individual in India, actually an employee of ours that designed an application to help figure out how to deploy healthcare monitoring in some of the remote villages in India where they don't have access to basic things that we take for granted. Monitoring your blood pressure, right, checking your cholesterol level and he created this application that a year later now, we have given kind of the full range of the Dell portfolio technology suite. So it is you know our application plus Pivotal plus VMware plus Dell EMC combined with the partnering that we've done with Tata Trust and the State of India, we've now deployed this healthcare solution called Life Care Solution to nearly 37 million rural residents, citizens in India. >> Wow 37 million. >> 37 million, so a small idea, you take from a really passionate individual, a person, a human being and figure out how you can really leverage that across the full gamut of what Dell can do, I think the results are incredible. >> Awesome, you guys also have a Women in Technology Executive Summit that you're hosting later this week. Let's talk about that in conjunction of what we talked a minute ago about, it's a business imperative as Stu pointed out, there are tangible, measurable results, tell us about this. >> Well, I'm kind of done honestly with a lot of the negativity around, oh, we're not making any progress, oh, we need to be moving fast and if you look at the amount of effort, energy and focus that is going into this space by so many companies and the public sector, it's remarkable and I've met a number of these CIOs over the last year or two, so we basically said let's invite 20 of them, let's share our passion, have made progress, care about solving this across their organization. A lot of us are working on the same things so if we simply got in a room and figured out, are their power in numbers and if we worked collectively together, could we accelerate progress. So that's what it's all about. So we have about 15 or 20 CEOs, both men and women and we'll be spending you know, six or seven hours together and we want to walk away with one or two recommendations on some things that we could collaborate on and have a faster, bigger impact. >> And I heard that, you mentioned collaboration, that's one of the vibes I also got from the keynote this morning when you saw Michael up there with Pat and Jeff and Satya, the collaboration within Dell Technologies, I think even talking with Stu and some of the things that have come out and that I've read, it seems to be more symbiosis with VMware but even some the, like I said, we're only in, I wouldn't even say halfway through day one and that is the spirit around here. We talk about people influence, but this spirit of collaboration is very authentic here. You are the first chief customer officer for Dell, if you look back at your tenure in this role, could you have envisioned where you are now? >> No, because it was like the first ever chief customer officer at Dell and you know, it really gave me a unique opportunity to build something from scratch and you know, there's been a number of other competitors as well as other companies that have announced in the last year or so the need to have a chief customer officer, the need to figure out how, which is a big remit of mine across Dell Technologies, how do we how do we eliminate the silos and connect the seams because that's where the value is going to be unlocked for our customers. That's what you saw on stage today. You saw the value of that with Jeff, with Pat, with Satya, some you know, one of our most important partners out there. Our customers don't want point solutions, they want them to be integrated, they want it to be streamlined, they don't be automated, they want us to speed time to value, they want us to streamline a lot of the back-office kind of mundane things that they're like, I don't want my people spending their time anymore and doing that and that's where we see Dell Technologies being so much more differentiated from other choices in the market. >> Yep, I agree with you. I'm Lisa Martin with John Furrier, this is day one of two sets of coverage for three days for theCUBE. There are at least 15,000 people here, we just came from a great keynote, Michael Dell, Pat Gelsinger, Jeff Clarks, Sati Netella was here. John and I are pleased to welcome back to theCUBE one of our guests, we've got Doug Schmitt, president of Dell Technologies Services. Doug, welcome back. >> Well, thank you for having me. >> And you've brought a partner in crime, we have Alex Barretto, Senior Vice President of Dell Technologies Services, Strategic Planning, and Technology. Alex, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you, happy to be here. >> So guys, I always love the keynotes. Michael always has- Michael and team always have great energy. Lot of cool announcements, all talking about digital transformation. But Doug, let's start with you, let's talk about the transformation of Dell Technologies Services. Give us an overview of your organization, and what you're doing for Dell Technologies Services. >> Yeah, well thank you for having us back. I know we were here last year talking a little bit about Dell Technologies, and wow, what an opening keynote this morning. And following up on that; look, service is key component, obviously. Helping our customers through their transformation. Our number one priority, it's really simple. It's literally about, for, and helping the customers. Whether it be specifically kind of, three areas: to sport, deployment, and their manning services. And helping them not only keep their data centers to the edge, running correctly. Making sure to help them through their transformations that they're going through, that we talked a lot about this morning. And then, what we do is we support our customers really with 60,000 people globally, about half of those are Dell Badge, the others, we leverage partners in various countries for. Look, it's about getting up every day and making sure everything runs correctly for them. And that's our job. >> Alex, talk about the strategy for services. Because one of the highlights in the keynote was Bank of America talking about how they got where they are today, and they go forward. It's not the same, things are changing, you guys have to change. What's changing in sevices? What's the strategy? Because it's a whole new ballgame. >> Yeah, great question. In fact, technology is- we have to ask ourselves of our own transformation. In fact, Doug and I spend quite a bit of time talking about a technology world map. Really, if you open the aperture of 'What is technology?', it's everything from data science, to our bots, to our software engineers, into the AI, engineers are developing both in-house as well as partnering with others. That is really the essence of what we're doing in services, and you see customers like Bank of America really adopting that. Because it's helpful in the value that customers get out of our technology. >> And the data was also important, they mentioned data. How are you guys using data in services? I'm sure you must be data-driven. I mean, the mandate up from high, Michael's like, "It's a data-driven world, it's clear as day." >> Absolutely, data is essential. In fact, if you look at the amount of data that's out there, and the growth of the data, it's just phenomenal. But the way I actually like to talk about data is the insights we get from data, right? Data is interesting, but the value that you get from data comes from the insights. So, we actually spent a lot of time developing models, and that's why we use a lot of data scientists, a lot of software engineers. Again, to develop models to generate value from the data. That value is what customers are looking for, and what we're focused on. >> In terms of value, one of the things that was also talked about this morning in the keynote is people and the workforce being massively distributed for any kind of business. 81% of the average worker, is outside of the traditional office, with over half of these people, I'm one of them, working in at least three different places every week. You've got customers that are highly distributed, as is your workforce. What can you talk to us, Alex, about the unified workspace announced on stage this morning? >> Fantastic new offering that we have, obviously you heard from Jeff onstage talking about that. And if you look at that, there are a couple elements that are interesting to me. First, you see all the pieces of Dell Technologies coming together to create greater value for the customer, and if you look at the value that's generated there, to your point, wherever you are as a customer, you're able to access your specific information, whatever the device. And so, if you think about your whole experience, device independent, as well as from a software standpoint, we can offer all in one. >> How, how is-- Sorry Doug, how is service integral to this, you know? >> Well that's-- yeah. What that's really about is so, you have workspace one, coming from VM, great offer and product. And then you have our services, which would be pro-deploy, are pro-support and in some cases, even the manning services, coming together with that to provide a wrapper around that. So, customers have that end-to-end experience with unified workspace, getting those four great service offerings together. Which really then brings it all together for the customer. So they have to do very little, quite frankly, to make that happen. >> One of the comments from Sati Netella was the whole new renaissance of IT needs infrastructure. You see the VX rail being bundled into data centers and service, the demo of the VM-ware cloud, where the just deploy a data center to the edge. I mean, this is just completely game-changing. How is that changing how you guys do the services? Because you guys, it was self-healing. There was a lot of stuff in the dashboard-- no one was deployed, it was all being done with software. How is this changing your mix of business, personnel, economics? >> Great question. You know, we talk about how we're helping customers transform Dell Technologies, well look, services is going through its own transformation as well. And I think that's what you're bringing up. And really, there's four pivots around that transformation we see inside of services that we have to do to stay up and make sure that we're cutting-edge for our customers. The first is around technology, Alex talked a little bit about that. But really, what that's about is the telemetry to help our customers. Data insights, it's not just the data. The second is around our systems that we're putting in place to leverage all that telemetry. You know, we're basically building a whole new CRM, bringing everything together. Our field capabilities, in terms of systems we're building out as well. So a massive transformation on the infrastructure inside just running this to support really. It's a $150 million install base. >> Can you share just stats or data on what's the most popular services you're deploying? And which ones are trending? Like, which ones are kind of, people kicking the tires on? Obviously, you've got the grooves swing on some of your key products. What's the hottest, services/products that you have? >> Well look, our Pro Support Plus is a very hot product for us, it literally provides end-to-end support for our customers, provides what we call a technical account manager, or service account manager with it. It gives you the insights then to really go help you. So it's not then about break/fix anymore. What it's about is proactive, predictive service, and then actually using that to go to the customer and say, "Hey, you know what? "Here's what we're seeing, here's how you can improve "your environment, not only prevent issues from happening, "but what are we doing to actually improve, "and carry that environment forward." And our customers love that. >> Any up and coming, trending products, services you see? Obviously, I can see yeah, there's probably going to be some new services there, but what are going to be the hot new techniques? >> I think seeing the same spot in ProManage which you'll see us carry forward here, and carrying it into the managing service is how do we continue to provide more of that end-to-end? Really, what you're seeing is a convergence of deployment, support, and managing service all really coming together. Our customers are really looking for more and more of that one-stop shop, but one offer across the board. So that's what we're seeing. >> But just to add to that, if you our ProSupport Suite, we have SupportAssist, which is our technology behind ProSupport. And the insights that we're generating; we have 55 million devices connected now. So you look at the connectivity, and the value customers are getting out of that, it's amazing. 20 Terabytes of data per day generated out of those devices. It's a lot of information coming in, customers see the value, they connect more, and again, back to your loop that you're talking about the data. >> Well, the security visibility too, just looking at the data, with all those devices now with Windows, and all the new multiple vendors. I mean, you've got all that data. >> That's right. But I think it's the insights, you know, we keep talking about that. Those insights are really helping us leverage that for the customer so they can see in front of them, and I think what we always say internally is "Look, customers aren't looking for a rear-view mirror. "They're looking through the windshield." The more we can use that insight, to help them see when and where they need to get through for their own transformation, is what it's all about. >> And talk to us about how both of you-- Doug, we'll start with you, how have customers been sort of symbiotic to the digital transformation of services in terms of knowing, "We've got to get predictive"? How are they helping you to evolve what you're delivering so that ultimately, services is part of this technology differentiation and product front that Dell Technologies has? >> Yeah, well, you know the history of Dell Technologies is really the core of our foundation. Culturally, for all 140,000 of us, is listening to the customer. And I think that culture has allowed us to adapt and stay close to not only what the customers are telling us, using the insights we're getting back, but knowing where the customers want to head. And it truly is a one-on-one listening to the customers, listening to where their issues are at, then using this technology and their solutions to solve their problems they're bringing up. But I got to tell you, there's not a big hammer that just- one answer for that. Literally, it's how are we helping consumers? How are we helping small, medium, business? Large? All of them have a variation of what's the same, and all of them have a variation of difference as well. >> Alex, how about strategy for a minute, the strategic landscape, how has Dell Technologies Services changed with the vendor landscape? Now you've got multiple vendors, it turns into multiple clouds, multiple clouds with open source software. You've got all kinds of new things emerging. How do you stay on top of it, what's the strategy, what's the long game look like for you guys? >> If I were to summarize in a nutshell, it's software. We're investing quite a bit in software, whether that is within our predictive capabilites, but as well as in deployment services, and Doug alluded to ProManage. So software is a pivotal, key component. So this is how we are approaching from a services standpoint. Whether you talk support, deploy, or manage services, the umbrella around that is really our capability to do the software component. So that's where we are placing our bets, we think that's where the future is. Whether it's SupportAssist, or our ProManager offering. It's all the backbone based on software development. >> And where is, we talked a lot about digital transformation and services, but the people, the people being essential to, we need the technology to do our jobs in any industry. What about skill, upleveling skills? It's great to have all the technology, but we need to have people to be trained, certified, professionals to be able to maximize the value of the services. Doug, go ahead and start, and then Alex, maybe from a strategic perspective, where is that people, cultural part of the services? >> Well, look it's huge. I don't think it's just for services, I hear our customers talk about it as well. And as Alex just mentioned, that software is driving more and more of it. You know, we use a lot of different acronyms and titles to kind of describe it, Digital Transformation, AI, BI. I mean there's all of this, but it is is all summarized in Digital Transformation. And the impact it has on our team members is vast. So look, open communication, yes, it is changing the way we do business, and quite frankly the world's doing business, the simple tasks are getting more and more automated through these insights, and they're going away. Making it easier for our customers means you're not getting as many break/fix calls, you're not getting these transactions. But what we're doing at the same time is we're upscaling the team, telling them where we need to be in the future, helping them with those skillsets, reset. The interesting thing is our team members are seeing the value of it, their jobs actually become more enriched because you're doing higher value things for our customers. But there is a transformation going on and-- >> And Doug, there's cultural changes as well, as we think about how we measure the business, some of the metrics that we look at, legacy metrics versus new metrics, they are different now. How we think about people development is different. So, I think it's a great question, 'cause the actual talent transformation, it's huge. There's short-term impact, and long-term impact. And if you don't plan that right, obviously you can't execute a strategy. >> How should your customers start rethinking about how they're leveraging the services? Because with unified workspace, data center as a service, and now multi-cloud, architecture is really important. Where the data sits, using real-time data you mentioned in software and data, so as they think about now, looking at not resetting, but taking services for their advantage. 'Cause they look at services, they want to be in the right position. It seems like architectures are more important now. Multi-cloud architecture. So, more technical people involved, the roles are changing. What should customers, how should they expect to be thinking about that? >> It's another great question. Well look, I'll let Alex follow up with his thoughts on this one. But I think this is really about us, the customers have to look as a true partnership. What we're really there trying to help them with every single day, is we talk about keeping the solutions in the system running to what they need, what they wanted. But we can also help by helping their staff free up time through the services we have, so they can stay focused on their transformation and provide the value that their teams and customers are looking for. That's really how we see that. So in other words, go into them and say, "Hey look, "we can take some of these tasks off, whether it be the deployment, unified workspace we talked about, you know, that was announced today. These are all about not only providing better technology for their team members and their customers, but then leveraging their time then to go spend it on their transformation. That's really it, quite frankly, simply put. >> Yeah, I would say it depends. Customers want to do a variety of things, so it depends on their business outcomes. So, at the end of the day, I would say, as you look at Dell Technologies, we have all the Lego blocks. You tell us what you're trying to achieve from a business standpoint, and we have the Lego blocks to make it happen. I think we're in a unique position to be able to deliver that valuable proposition to customers. So it's not a one size fits all. >> More data, more workloads, I've heard the term workload mentioned so many times in all my CUBE interviews, we all talk about workloads, but now with IOT and Edge, you're going to see a proliferation of more workloads, some small, some massive, and managing that workload is a huge challenge for organizations. This comes up as the number one issue. How does services play into that, how do you guys make that easier, and I love the operating model of simplicity, but when you guys take that realization into services, what do you guys bake out of that? What comes out of that? >> Yeah, I would say two things. First, the reason that workloads exists is that it's important for the business. So it's got to be up at times, it's got to be 100 percent. It's got to be up and running. We make sure that that happens. Second, if you look at the workloads, they're actually running critical pieces of the business. So we actually assure that we are providing additional value, beyond actually just running infrastructure, actually keeping value and how you should optimize that infrastructure so you can do more with less. >> Can you give, is there an example of a customer? John mentioned B of A was highlighted this morning, Draper was as well, I think some of the Trailblazer Winners were right before we started. A customer that comes to mind that really demonstrates the value that they're getting from Dell Technologies' suite of services? >> Well, look, I think there's a lot of those. But going back to maybe, we talked about the customers today in the keynote speeches that were happening. But look, there's a lot of small and medium businesses that are one, trying to stay with and ahead of technology. Lots of cases actually farther ahead in their transformation. I think I know of one that I recently had a conversation with, a doctor's office had four or five offices in a town here in the US. And they're staying ahead of that. They want us to "Look, we want to buy things that have "easy deployment, easy install/run. We also need you "to come in and help us tell us how to access "and leverage the technology we have better." Running it easier, staying ahead of that digital transformation, and providing really, their virtual CIO, with a technical account manager pulling all that together. You know, all from the storage, their server, their client products coming together; they don't view it as-- the customer's not coming to us and talking to us about individual products. It's not the discussion. What they're saying is "We need to purchase this, "we know we need this solution, we need to have you guys "come and pull it all together, we're looking "for our people to take care of the patients, "get the information that needs to the government, "and get paid, that's it. "And we need you to help us pull all that together." And we're doing that. >> Doug, my final question for you. Michael Dell always talks about this, within the hallway conversations, or on theCUBE. He says, "The best way to create valuable teams is to attract and retain the best talent." How are you guys attracting and retaining the talent, because the workforces are changing, the technology's changing. What are some of the hard problems? Because people love to solve hard problems. What's the pitch for people out there watching, that might want to work in the services group? What's the environment like? How do you attract great people? What kind of problems do they work on? Give a little taste. >> Well, first of all, you know, you have to love and want to take care of our customers, that's really exciting to me, and I know to the other 60,000 team members. That's why we get up for every day. There's an energy that comes from that. I mean, you're getting up and helping our customers whether they're hospitals, small, medium businesses, or consumers. Really being productive in their lives, whatever it may be. So there's an energy that comes from that, I think a lot of people enjoy doing that. It can't be more exciting than that, right? Second of all, career. Just so many aspects to this. You think about digital future technology, we have everything from being able to go out in the field and help our customers to remote, there's just so many different opportunities. And then we also have our employee resource group. So even participating beyond just work, we have the ability to join all of our different resources groups, whether it be Pride, or Veterans, or whatever they may be. People like and see value to just coming into work, but being able to take their passions that they have on the outside and bring it in as well. >> Real citizenship opportunities to bring and contribute back. >> Exactly right, giving back to our communities. very strong, very strong. You know I get an immense amount of pride in the things that I want to contribute to outside of work, and seeing and getting empowered by Dell to do those things. And then constant learning, constant, constant learning. >> I would also hint at a bit of competitive imagination. (Laughing) If you heard any barking during our interviews, speaking of things to do outside of work, we're next to Michael's Angel Paws, which is near and dear to Michael Dell's heart. That's the service dogs that are actually here for all of us to get our dog fixes on. (upbeat electronic music) >> From the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, it's theCUBE covering HoshoCon 2018 brought to you by Hosho. >> OK, welcome back everyone. We're live in Las Vegas for HoshoCon. I'm John Furrier, the host of theCUBE. This is the first inaugural security conference around blockchain. Our next guest is John Kirch, who's the Chief Evangelist for Sentinel Protocol. Great to see you, thanks for coming on. Hey, it's great to be here, John. Thank you very much for inviting me. >> I love the shirt, I got my CUBE shirt here. You got your shirt on. Cool crowd here. So, before you get into some of the things you guys are working on, what's the scene here like, for people who aren't here, this is the first ever blockchain security conference around in the industry. What are the type of people that are here? And what's going on? Why is this important? >> Well, that's a really good question. I mean, I can think back and I remember meeting the president of Hosho. For the first time back in New York at Consensus. And he was giving a presentation, and I thought it was fantastic presentation, but we broke ice, we shook hands. And then we bumped into each other again in Soul. And then I was also talking to Tim Draper not too long ago. And Tim said, he was coming out here to Las Vegas to give a presentation. And he is one of our key investors. So we thought, it would be a good idea for us to show up as well. And we believe that many times in trade shows and other types of seminar series, there's too much emphasis on fintech and not on security. And the reason why I say that, is basically in the blockchain crypto world, right now one of the major challenges holding back the growth and the success is the lack of security. Not in a core blockchain technology, but in the Dapps and in the other connected applications. People are getting hacked. And there's different types of hackings, everything from Phishing, to malware, to DNS engine hacking, to smart contracts, web applications, I mean. >> The surface area is large. >> It, many different vectors, and it's complex. Something needs to be done about it in order to unlock the potential of blockchain crypto. >> Yeah, and I also love this event because one, it's, well first of anything is always good because it's present on creation, and you don't know, there might be another one, if it's around the next year or not. But I think this one seems like it's got the right people at it that it would grow. Because, remember. >> Yeah. >> The security is the number one problem, it should be seamless, it's complicated, multiple keys to deal with, multiple chains, never mind in the surface area for hacking. So I think blockchain is going to be a sea-change. We all know that, all tech alpha entrepreneurs are getting that. The complexity around the software is the key. What do you guys, how do you guys look at this? Because you guys are in the business to solve this problem. >> Right. >> What's the answer here? >> Well, we'd look at it from a experience point of view of cybersecurity. What I mean by that is that we have a lot of people on the team that come from companies like Palo Alto Networks, and F5, and Fortinet, I come from Darktrace, and other cybersecurity companies as well. But we'd look at it from the point of view, what did we do in the past, what were the problems, how can we leverage these technologies. What's wrong with the stuff that we did before, and how can we correct those gaps and provide a better product that's more usable, easier to install, and then has the multi-vector analysis capabilities to do the, not just antivirus, for instance, but how about AI, machine learning for detecting new anomalies and behavior or newer threats and attacks, or sandboxing. But how do we solve the problem is really our main focus. >> So I got to ask you question. A lot of people in the industry that are smart or trying to attack this problem, there's two schools of thoughts. We are going to get the software, going to get to the AI, got to do all the stuff over here, and then there's radical view is, Hey, the old model isn't working for blockchain, 'cause it's a different architecture, it's decentralized, so you can't just take network protocol stacks and say, Hey this is your security stack in the old network model to decentralize. So it needs a redo. >> Right. >> A refresh or a do-over. >> Right, right. >> So, this is, seems to be tension that's productive but still contentious. >> Right. >> What's the answer, because your old Juniper, Cisco switches might not be the perimeter-based firewall model, >> I'd love that question. >> We need a do-over or not? >> So, we are the world's first crowdsourced threat intelligence platform. I didn't say product, I said platform. And that means multiple various different types of products on our platform, but in addition to that, one of the biggest problems today is the need to update. Let's say, if you're looking at things from an antivirus point of view, if you haven't updated your database, your system, then you've got vulnerabilities that you haven't addressed. And so we don't need to be updated. Our system is running on a decentralized blockchain, and therefore is connected to APIs, to different types of endpoints. We are platform-agnostic, so we could connect to IoT-type devices or, you know, other types of, mobile telephones, or to PCs, servers, and so on. And, by having this collective cybersecurity intelligence, by definition, that means we have a richer, wider database of more information, than if you license a product from, let's say, any one of the antivirus vendors. You get that company's intelligence and support services only. But we're doing it, where we're taking company A plus B, plus C, plus this white hat hacker, plus this individual here, and we're, basically, combining all that together and offering it to our clients. >> And so, is it the single source of truth or knowledge around trust, how's the trust factor come in. 'Cause, if I'm a company I want to know that everything I'm running is updated. I want to know what it is first, and then it's updated. >> And you know, in this decentralized trustless world, there is, from our point of view, a need for an organization that can be trusted by people who have been hacked or experienced suspicious activity. So, we are addressing that, so we have a team of people called the Sentinels, and they are tested and certified by our internal cybersecurity experts, as having the capabilities and the knowledge and experience to contribute. And when those people make contributions, in terms of cybersecurity intelligence, we award them with points, and those points can be converted to fiat or into other crypto tokens. >> So you're tokenizing the contribution. >> We are. >> Relative to the crowdsourcing. >> Exactly. >> So this is like CrowdStrike, or is it different? >> Oh, it's different, I think, from CrowdStrike, because CrowdStrike, while it's a very good company and very good product, what we're doing is that we're combining blacklist with whitelist and we're providing the reporting service. And so, and we're running it on a blockchain, and the blockchain has certain elements that are very very good in terms immutability, or a very high type of resilience factor, or traceability, and so we're really taking our product and focusing it on the blockchain crypto world, but quite frankly, what we're building, because we're utilizing the technology in the optimal manner, it is also applicable to the conventional cybersecurity world too. And I expect that it'll be very commonly used there tomorrow. >> So, it's portable in the sense of the function. You can actually bring this to the class of cybersecurity, known detection type identification. >> I could be using it for Goldman Sachs or Bank of America, or, let's say, this hotel. >> Some of the global cybersecurity landscape, how would you, you know, if someone's putting their toe in the water for the first time. You're obviously in the trenches doing cutting edge work, certainly folks in Washington, D.C., around the world, have cyber conversations, from general Keith Alexander, there's new companies got some interesting things going on there. To kind of grokking it, what's so this, there's crowdsourcing, how would you brake up the cybersecurity market, 'cause cyber intelligence is a big part of regional cloud deployments now, Amazon's going to have a region in the Middle East. I'm sure they got their DNS monitored well. But you have network points and you have software running on them. How is the market sliced up? Is there categories, like, that are cleanly defined? How do you view that? >> Well, you know, I look at things from a point of view of having started in the cybersecurity world, John, back in 1998. And that was when I introduced the company called WatchGuard to the Japanese market, and also did that in Korea as well. But we pioneered the use of Linux appliances. Would you believe that? (John laughing) And we also pioneered managed security services. And so, one of the things that I learned over time as the cybersecurity world increased in complexity, I mean, back there it was easy, all you needed was an antivirus and you needed network firewall. >> And you had proprietary software too, open source wasn't as prevalent. >> Exactly, but things keep on getting ratcheted up, the complexity factor is growing. And now we look at cybersecurity and there are so many different types of products and services. And so it really comes down to understanding the security policy of the end user, of the organization or the individual. What type of PC they're using? Is it IBM, is it Apple? For them putting together a security policy and then bringing in different types of products that, basically, help that individual or that organization to satisfy that policy. And then tuning that over time. Most people don't think about that part, but the tuning process is also very important. So, and then educating people too, so. >> What's a number one industry problem that industry needs to solve as an industry, and then, what is the biggest concern that end users or organizations will have? Well, I think that biggest problem out there right now that hasn't been solved, is what's going on in front of our very eyes, this, the hacking of these exchanges and wallets. I mean, those organizations have lost now over three billion dollars, cumulative over the past few years, and then over one billion dollars this year. I mean, that's a lot of money. >> It's a lot of cash. >> And somebody needs to do something. >> And nobody knows where it goes, I mean, >> Well, actually we do know where it goes. Because, actually, that's the video I wanted to show today after my presentation, but there just wasn't enough time. We analyzed the Zaif hacking that happened just a few weeks ago. >> How much did they take? >> It was about 60 million dollars. But we analyzed that, and using crowdsourced information, we analyzed the transactions and so forth, and we found, believe it or not, that a large portion of those stolen Bitcoins were washed and went through Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. And so, if they utilized our technology, to understand that the coins that are going through them were stolen, we would do a lot to increase the cost factor for monetizing stolen Bitcoins, we would help Binance to protect themselves. >> So the laundering of the coins, >> Yes. >> You could, basically, put a penalty on that, or >> Well, I don't look at it from a penalty point of view. I look at it from the point of view of helping people to make transactions that are kosher, that meet with their corporate policy, that comply with law, that enable them to ensure, that what they are doing is correct. >> So, you tracked the address, how do you know they are being washed, from that specific >> We, basically, track the addresses, we were able to track the addresses and I can show you a video later, if you like to, where we did just that. >> Yeah, I would like to get a copy of that. >> And the information, this is on the blockchain, show that the coins went through Binance. >> So, meaning the old classic IT operations, you always had the network management's piece, this is, again, can be a big part of traceability and accountability piece of it. >> Correct. >> This is important. >> Yeah, in fact, you know, it's really important that when you think about this world. For instance, if I were to give you five dollars. >> Thanks. >> And you were to get ripped off, and somebody took that five dollars from you, how would, John, how would you trace that five dollars? >> I would track the guy around that had stole it, find out where it is, but if I don't know who's took it, then... >> If you went to the police and ask them for help, do you think they could help you analyze and trace that and audit? >> Well, in San Francisco they break into cars and just take whatever they want. The police don't even show up. >> Right, but that's relying on luck, do you know, did he open the right car, >> I wouldn't. I wouldn't know who had this. >> But, you know, that's one of the great things is that with the blockchain technology, if you use it correctly, you can trace, many times, not all the time. But it does offer us very... >> 'Cause there's a digital footprint. >> Yeah. >> There's definitely a traceability aspect. >> And that's one of the nice advantages. So, I'd rather give you Bitcoin than the five-dollar bill. >> Yeah, I'll take the Bitcoin, it probably is worth more than the five. Money is going away, paper money, I don't now have a need for. Talk about the aspect of Bitcoin in cryptocurrency, as it relates to the funding of security attacks, because that's been a big concern, people trying to figure that out. Have you guys made any progress on tracking the funding, the underground funding for security attacks. >> Well, when you think about it, and when you think about the funding of security attacks, it's now teams, and a lot of these teams are very well trained and educated. >> And they're making some good money too. >> Yeah, and so they're making good money, they've monetized this. And all it takes is one time that they break in. And, so, once they break in, and you're compromised, so you have to defend every every time, and do it well, but they only need to break in once. But in terms of that, >> One bad day. >> The one bad day. >> One bad second. >> And your company's gone. >> Yeah. >> But the funding of these endeavors is getting more and more sophisticated, the money involved is becoming much much more bigger, and we need to ratchet up our defenses, so that we can provide an adequate response. >> So, what is the answer for me, let's just say, hypothetically, you know, I get, you know, 50 million in Bitcoin for theCUBE bank, for our community, and going to use that Bitcoin to have people have flourish with content, and I got to store it somewhere. >> Yeah. >> What do I do? >> Well. >> What's my answer? Do I call Binance and say, Hey if you going to wash and launder that, I might as well put it with you, because if you're the home for all the money. >> Well, I think that the optimal solution is to get it off the network, put it into a cold wallet, and safeguard that private key in a way that is very very secure. Do not leave it, you know, on your PC, don't tape it to your screen, but basically safeguard that privat key very well. Give us a quick update on the Sentinel Protocol, the company. How big are you guys? You mentioned Draper funded you guys. What's the status? >> Well, you know, we started earlier this year, back in January, and now we have 30 security professionals, our headquarters are in Singapore, we have another big office up in Seoul, Korea, we have a third office in Tokyo. We now have over 42 partners. I'm very proud to say that we've got, amongst those partners, at least 10 exchanges and wallets signed on with us directly, that are very interested in using our technology, integrated into their applications. >> Yeah. >> And so, >> And why they work with you, for a hedge, for security, for insurance, what's the rationale? It's forensics, for data, what's the value for them? >> Once they've been hacked, it's pretty hard to recover. A lot of these companies that are hacked, in fact, it ends with the company closing, or being sold. So, basically, what they're trying to do is leverage our security to detect the threats and the attacks, you know, in a proactive online manner before they get damaged. And then, by doing that, they can enhance their branding, that's services they're providing to their clients, and they can also help to maximize the stability and growth of their organization, as well as, >> It's a heat shield. >> The future life. >> It's a shield for them. >> It's a shield, yes. >> So they're being proactive on the security front. >> Exactly. >> So minimize any damages that potentially could get through. >> You know, right now, John, unfortunately, if you get hacked, it's a wild, wild West, it's every man up to himself. >> Yeah, it's a total stage coach. >> Nobody's going to help you. >> With the mask on, no one knows who it is. You got to do some sort of real forensics and get lucky. >> Yeah. >> Sounds like it's hit or miss, right? >> Yeah, if you get lucky, you're a lucky man, I'll tell you, because most of the people out there are not getting lucky. >> Yeah. So, we're working together with our partners to, basically, solve this problem. >> And how much money did you guys raise? >> We raised approximately eight million dollars, but it was 25,000 Ethereum. >> OK, congratulations. >> Not at all, thank you very much. >> Well thanks for coming on. I would track the guy around that had stole it, and just take whatever they want. I wouldn't. But, you know, that's one of the great things is that And that's one of the nice advantages. the funding of security attacks, and when you think about the funding of security attacks, but they only need to break in once. But the funding of these endeavors and I got to store it somewhere.
