[Music] welcome back to red hat summit 2021 my name is dave vellante and you're watching the cube where we go out to the events and extract the signal from the noise of course virtually in this case and i'm pleased to welcome victor carumpus who is the senior vice president of digital banking at bank mandiri coming in from jakarta welcome to the cube victor great to see you hi dave great to see you and great to be invited here thank you yeah you're very welcome i i wonder if you could just give us an overview of the bank maybe talk a little bit about your strategy your customers you know what the what the focus is of your company and what your role is there okay uh maybe i'm i'll give a short overview about bang mandir itself so bang money is a state-owned enterprise owned by the government but we also public company currently we already have a very big distribution channel in so uh you know indonesia is an island country it's very huge country so we are we are representing all over indonesia from province of aceh and i'm up to profits of papua and we have about 2600 branches all over indonesia and about uh 15 000 atms all over indonesia so bangladesh itself is focused on a lot of segment customers like indonesia from the corporate side small medium enterprise and also retail banking now uh we are we are currently focused in turning ourselves to become having to have more digital capability and currently in our uh current situations actually it is very good uh about 95 percent of our transactions is already coming from the electronic channel so it's only about five percent that coming from the branches but we know that this is still a journey uh and we are building more digital capability and features and functions on our digital channels to our customer got it um okay and so your your your digital journey kind of coincides i guess in a way with your your your container uh adoption journey uh i think that started a few years ago um and so maybe you could talk a little bit about that i i mean in thinking about modernizing your application portfolio obviously containers been around forever but they weren't packaged in a way that could actually be easily you know utilized and now you're seeing people in i.t roles like yourself really leaning in maybe you could talk about some of the technology considerations that impacted that desire to actually leverage containers i think uh first it's about the scalability because with a monolithic architecture it's kind of difficult to scale up for only specific features by doing container microservices we have options to scale up in a very fast way because one of the features is auto scaling on the container architectures uh one monitor is a very focused on the transaction banking so you might say bangladesh is supporting the economy of the country because in a in any given time in bangladesh we we're running about four thousand transactions per seconds that's a huge transactions number and have having said that uh our channel like i told you already running about 95 percent of the transactions so scalability is always important for us because especially like like now is the the in indonesia is a festive month it's a ramadan month where muslim is actually doing fasting but at the same time actually there's a lot of needs and people do a lot of transactions and on this kind of festive seasons the transition can be increased up to 40 or 50 suddenly and that's kind of things always happen in bangladesh and we must be ready and we must have a scalability on demand now containerization is enabling us to do that other thing is about flexibility because on the old days actually when we want to set up a new environment it's very difficult and takes a lot of time and that's affecting the time to market our products by doing the containerizations and putting it on a ci cd continuous integration called the development plan platform we are we call devsecops platform that kind of things becoming automatic because we set up the devsecos platform and the third one is the consistency actually so by by doing the contact investigations we can put the the apis on our back-end apis in the container itself and actually it's deliverable environment and a consistent experience to our customer because for example we promise our customer that every transaction should be finished within two seconds from their mobile banking up to our hosts and back forward to their mobile banking is only two seconds so that kind of thing is driving us to move to the current technology which we're using containerization and micro services great okay so 4 000 transactions per second you can't can't do that on erc20 ethereum for all you crypto fans out there that's that's pretty high volume uh and if i understand it correctly victor your role is really to envision this digital environment and then ultimately make it happen from a technology standpoint is that correct that's product that's got it yeah so okay so you now have a number of of product lines and teams you're using the same container platform maybe you could share with our audience some of the best practices and learnings that that you've taken away on this journey so i think first of all we can reuse a lot of components by doing this containerization platform is different when we still use the monolithic platform like the application server of java application server uh by using containerization actually uh be providing like a service banking as a service so whenever we build a new channel for example the first one we built a new service for example like a fun transfer service but when we create another channel for example a corporate banking electronic channel or we create another uh let's say wealth management channel whatever we already built before can be reusable instantly by using this technology so uh if i might say that actually there is a lot of best practices coming by using this platform and my team get a lot of benefit in terms of faster development time and also they can deliver the product and service in a high quality manner minimize the number of errors as well you know there's a lot of choices out there obviously i wonder if you could share what led you to the choice of red hat and open shift okay so first of all before we choose the platform actually we also comparing ourselves with the with the fintechs and also with the big tech in indonesia as well so we see we see that actually they already start using kubernetes and uh their platform is quite stable and even they can support about 90 to 100 million of customers without any issues at all so when we see this uh we choose a lot of we learn about a lot of platform and we finally choose opencv because we think that openshift and we we already do our research openshift is quite stable and for banks like us that have for having 4500 transaction per seconds stability is number one uh availability is also number one now uh having said that after doing our research we choose openshift and we implemented openshift in our environment because we promise our customers to provide 99.95 percent uh availability can i just i'm sorry to interrupt you victor can you just repeat that you cut out a little bit so you you said you you promised your customers to deliver and then you cut out a little bit can you just repeat what you just said there okay so we're giving a promise to our to our customer providing a 99.95 availability so this is the starting point of our channel sure in the efficiency we have efficient also to providing four nines which is 99.99 but i mean the starting point is 99.95 and because we have that the demand that requirement that's one of the reason we choose the openshift and red hat as our technology stack platform got it okay and so i have a question um what was it like in terms of just the skills and the adoption uh for your developers uh was it was it a big gap to go from where you were to you know where you are today did you have to what kind of training did you have to do did you have to do any sort of outsourcing to accelerate that maybe you could describe that how you close that skills gap so definitely in the beginning is quite challenging because although they are using modern languages like jaffa or kotlin but uh to understand the concept and to design correctly yes we we did a lot of training to them uh it takes a it takes me about three months to give them the proper training uh in terms of building the right uh microservices platform and also to building modular architecture in terms of the customer channel because this will be the fundamental when you build it correctly in the beginning and actually at the later point you will enjoy the benefit so the first three months actually is training and doing research and development and doing a lot of trial and errors but after the three months actually we already have the right technology stack have the right models and our devsecops is already working then actually after that the speed is very fast because uh it sprints uh we do agile way of working the agiles dlc it's only one month so every one month we already have new features coming in so that's what we call a huge transformation a digital transformation inside of our bank it's three months actually not bad i mean i would i would have thought on average it's going to take five or six months to get people up to speed so three months is pretty good and i'm also inferring that you weren't just paving the cow path you weren't just saying okay let's take our traditional and then you know re refactor it to digital you had to re-envision what digital looked like because the digital is different uh than the traditional uh so so that's actually pretty good uh ramp rate i wonder if you could just go ahead and comment if you could because when you say about uh revamp so actually it's not on the id side not only but also the business side we implement new way as well so actually if clearly they're implementing a new model so they're using a design thinking and also a co-creation model where now when we building a product so we're not writing the old product in a new way no we totally building it from from scratch and involving our key customer and our stakeholder when we're building this product so actually we implementing new models what we call design thinking and also uh co-creation with our customer so that's actually changing the face of the customer electronic channel a lot and and actually when we when we want to to deploy we invite our customer to test it first we call it like usability testing if they like it we continue to design if they they don't like it they give us a feedback how they would like it to be changed and and that's we appreciate our customer feedback because customers experience is everything now yeah so so the product can be accepted if the experience on that product is really making customer uh solving their problem solving the customer problem and making them enjoying uh doing transactions in our mobile banking product i think this is a really important point for people to understand so you weren't just paving the cow path i call it you're taking the old and and just trying to refactor it and make it exactly turn it into digital you had to really think about the business the business processes the dependencies the customer experience and then bring it back um what have been some of the business outcomes of this initiative and maybe you could we then after that we can get into some of the the future plans so so the outcome uh i think this journey uh since last year uh not last year actually since no october 2019 we already started the journey uh what took us by surprise is actually the pandemic uh suddenly the first three months when we have the pandemic of coffee we are being forced to close a lot of branches for temporary because we want to avoid the pandemic situations and that time actually the the demand using our digital channel is increasing a lot but because we already prepared actually we get the benefit one of the thing is uh the business benefit is relating so during the pandemic nobody can come to the branch and mostly the account opening actually happening online so uh we even got about 9000 account opening per day which is something that we are not imagining before so uh the benefit is very clear by using this this technology actually enabling us to provide digital capability for our customer and enabling us to open more accounts we see ourselves can grow even not linear but exponentially grow by using this platform uh talking about that indonesia is a is a huge country with we have about 200 250 million populations and actually there's still a lot of people is not having a bank account at all now by doing this actually we open opportunity doing financial inclusion for those people that need a banking account now they can reach us by using the digital platform as well yeah that's an awesome story and it goes back to the to the reason the real motivator for for moving to kubernetes and containers was scale uh and and you know it's you obviously started your digital journey prior to the pandemic but a lot of customers and i'm sure you as well were were forced to speed up a portion anyway of the digital component uh because of the pandemic like you said you couldn't people couldn't walk into the branches so but now you've got some more time to think about that journey you've had a lot of learnings 2020 was like a petri dish of experimentation but but in real time having to serve customers what's the future look like for the bank's technology journey okay so basically we uh we are not stopping only on the retail side yeah uh we want to redefine our customer journey also on the wholesale side and also on the small medium enterprise there is still a lot of things that need to be done uh and required by the customer actually so uh on the on the on the sme side we want to give them easier access uh for uh financing their businesses i think when we are back to the new normal uh the business need to have funding for for starting their business again so building an sme platform for them will will help a lot and will help the country as well on the retail side actually like i told you uh we are focusing on the more financial inclusion because uh i give you example right uh from the 230 million of indonesians uh populations i think by today maybe it's only about 50 million customers that already have a banking account so there is still a lot of people that need an access faster and cheaper and more efficient way for doing banking transactions so that's this also will become our focus and the last part is actually corporate what we see now a lot of the corporate require us to open uh api connectivity doing open banking with them the government actually the central bank supporting it supporting all the banks they are trying to create an api playbooks now and then they create they want to create an api standard for all the core all the use corporate also can connect it to the bank directly using api so this is also our focus because it will help the country economy when the economy costs the transaction costs getting more efficient getting more cheaper and there's a lot of transaction can be supported by our bank as well so i think i think that's the the future that we are imagining and i'm really hope that the pandemi will be finished and we come back to the to the new normal and we can support more transactions for this country yeah you're here to that i call it the new abnormal but so this is this is a great story everybody loves to talk about disruption we do as well and but people think oh it's out with out with the old in with the new and it's not like that this is a great story victor of uh of an established incumbent that is modernizing its its applications and its digital experience and of course the incumbent has the advantage of it's a real business it has customers that has a data it has experiences it and if it can modernize its infrastructure and and it's in its application portfolio it actually has an advantage because it's got way more features way more data way more customers and This is Dave Vellante, and as part of my CEO and CXO series I've been bringing in leaders around the industry and I'm really pleased to have Sudheesh Nair, who is the CEO of ThoughtSpot Cube alum. Great to see you against Sudheesh, thanks for coming on. >> My pleasure Dave. Thank you so much for having me. I hope everything is well with you and your family. >> Yeah ditto back at you. I know you guys were in a hot spot for a while so you know we power on together, so I got to ask you. You guys are AI specialists, maybe sometimes you can see things before they happen. At what point did you realize that this COVID-19 was really going to be something that would affect businesses globally and then specifically your business. >> Yeah it's amazing, isn't it? I mean we used to think that in Silicon Valley we are sitting at the top of the world. AI and artificial intelligence, machine learning, Cloud, IOT and all of a sudden this little virus comes in and put us all in our places basically. We are all waiting for doctors and others to figure these things out so we can actually go outside. That tells you all about what is really important in life sometimes. It's been a hard journey for most people because of what a huge health event this has been. From a Silicon Valley point of view and specifically from artificial intelligence point of view, there is not a lot of history here that we can use to predict the future, however early February we had our sales kick off and we had a lot of our sellers who came from Asia and it became sort of clear to us immediately during our sales kick off in Napa Valley that this is not like any other event. The sort of things that they were going through in Asia we sort of realized immediately that us and when it gets to the shores of the US, this is going to really hurt. So we started hunkering down as a company, but as you mentioned early when we were talking, California in general had a head start, so we've been hunkered down for almost five weeks now, as a company and as the people and the results are showing. You know it is somewhat contained. Now obviously the real question is what next? How do we go out? But that's probably the next journey. >> So a lot of the executives that I've talked to, of course they start with the number one importance is the health and well-being of our employees. We set up the work from home infrastructure, et cetera. So that's I think, been fairly well played in the media and beginning to understand that pretty well. Also, you saw I talked to Frank Slootman and he's sort of joked about the Sequoia memos, that you know eliminate unnecessary expenses and practices. I've always eliminated unnecessary expenses, keep it to the essentials, but one of the things that I haven't probed with CEOs and I'd love your thoughts on this is, did you have to rethink sort of the ideal customer profile and your value proposition in the specific context of COVID? Was that something that you deliberately did? >> Yeah so it's a really important question that you asked, and I saw the Frank interview and I a 100% agree with that. Inside the company we have this saying, and our co-founder Ajeet actually coined the phrase of living like a middle-class company, and we've always lived that, even though we have, 300 plus million dollars in the bank and we raised a big round last year. It is important to know that as a growth stage company, we are not measured on what's in the bank. It's about the value that we are delivering and how much I'll be able to collect from customers to run the business. The living like a middle-class family has always been the ethos of the company and that has been a good thing. However, I've been with ThoughtSpot for a little more than 18 months. I joined as the CEO. I was an early investor in the company and there are a couple of big changes that we made in the last 18 months, and one of is moving to Cloud which we can talk. The other one has been around narrowing our focus on who we sell to, because one of the things that, as you know very well Dave, is that the world of data is extremely complex. Every company can come in and say, "We have the best solution out there" and it can just be in the world, but the reality is no single product is going to solve every problem for a customer when it comes to a data analytics issue. All we can hope for is that we become part of a package or solution that solves a very specific problem, so in that context there's a lot of services involved, a lot of understanding of customer problems involved. We are not a bi-product in the sense of Tableau or click on Microsoft, but they do. We are about a use case based outcomes, so we knew that we can't be everywhere. So the second change we made is actually a narrower focus, exclusively sell to global. That class, the middle class mentality, really paid off now because almost all the customers we sell to are very large customers and the four work verticals that we were seeing tremendous progress, one was healthcare, second was financial sector, the third was telecom and manufacturing and the last one is repair. Out of these four, I would say manufacturing is the one where we have seen a slowdown, but the other verticals have been, I would say cautiously spending. Being very responsible and thus far, I'm not here to say that everything is fine, but the impact if you take Zoom as a spectrum, on one end of the spectrum, where everything is doing amazingly well, because they are a good product market fit to hospitality industry on the other side. I would say ThoughtSpot and our approach to data analytics is closer to this than that. >> That's very interesting Sudheesh because, of course health care, I don't think they have time to do anything right now. I mean they're just so overwhelmed so that's obviously an interesting area that's going to continue to do well I would think. And they, the Financial Services guys, there's a lot of liquidity in the system and after 2009 the FinTech guys or the financial, the banks are doing quite well. They may squeeze you a little bit because they're smart negotiators, but as you say manufacturing with the supply chains, and in retail, look, if your ecommerce I mean Amazon hit, all-time highs today up whatever, 20% in the last two weeks. I mean just amazing what's happening, so it's really specific parts of those sectors will continue to do well, won't they? >> Absolutely, I think look, I saw this joke on Twitter, what's the number one cost? What is in fact (mic cuts out). Very soon people will say it is COVID and even businesses that have been tried to, sort of relatively, reluctant to really embrace the transformation that the customers have been asking for. This has become the biggest forcing function and that's actually a good thing because consumers are going to ultimately win because once you get groceries delivered to you into your front doors, it's going to be hard to sort of go back to standing in the line in Costco, when InstaCart can actually deliver it for you and you get used to it, so there are some transformation that is going to happen because of COVID. I don't think that society will go back from, but having said that, it's also not transformation for the sake of transformation. So speaking from our point of view on data analytics, I sort of believe that the last three to four years we have been sort of living in the Renaissance of enterprise data analytics and that's primarily because of three things. The first thing, every consumer is expecting, no matter how small or the big business, is to get to know them. You know, I don't want you to treat me like an average. I don't want you treat me like a number. Treat me like a person, which means understand me but personalize the services you are delivering and make sure that everything that you send me are relevant. If there's a marketing campaign or promo or customer support call, make sure it's relevant. The relevance and personalization. The second is, in return for that. customers are willing to give you all sorts of data. The privacy, be damned, so to a certain extent they are giving you location information, medical information,-- And the last part is with Cloud, the amount of data that you can collect and free plus in data warehouse like Snowflakes, like Redshift. It's been fundamentally shifted, so when you toggle them together the customers demand for better actors from the business, then amount of data that they're willing to give and collect to IOT and variables and then cloud-based technologies that allows you to process and store this means that analyzing this data and then delivering relevant actions to the consumers is no longer a nice to have and that I think is part of the reason why ThoughtSpot is finding sort of a tailwind, even with all this global headwind that we are all in. >> Well I think too, the innovation formula really has changed in our industry. I've said many times, it's not Moore's law anymore, it's the combination of data plus AI applied to that data and Cloud for scale and you guys are at the heart of that, so I want to talk about the market space a little bit. You look at BI and analytics, you look at the market. You know the Gartner Magic Quadrant and to your point, you know the companies on there are sort of chalk and cheese, to borrow a phrase from our friends across the pond. I mean, you're not power BI, you're not SaaS. I mean you're sort of search led. You're turning natural language into complex sequel queries. You're bringing in artificial intelligence and machine intelligence to really simplify and dramatically expand and put into the hands of business people analytics. So explain a little bit. First of all, do I have that sort of roughly right? And help us frame the market space how you think about it. >> Yeah I mean first of all, it is amazing that the diverse industry and technologies that you speak to and how you are able to grasp all of them and summarize them within a matter of seconds is a term to understand in itself. You and Stew, you both have that. You are absolutely right. So the way I think of this is that BI technologies have been around and it's played out really well. It played it's part. I mean if you look at it the way I think of BI, the most biggest BI tool is still Excel. People still want to use Excel and that is the number one BI tool ever. Then 10 years ago Tableau came in and made visualizations so delightful and a pic so to speak. That became the better way to consume complex data. Then Microsoft came in Power BI and then commoditized and the visualization to a point that, you know Tableau had to fight and it ended up selling to the Salesforce. We are not trying to play there because I think if you chase the idea of visualization it is going to be a long hard journey for ThoughtSpot to catch Tableau in visualization. That's not what we are trying to do. What we are trying to do is that you have a lot of data on one hand and you have a consumer sitting here and saying data doesn't mean you treated me well. What is my action that is this quote, very customized action quote. And our question is, how does beta turn into bespoke action inside a business? The insurance company is calling. You are calling an insurance company's customer support person. How do you know that the impact that you are getting from them is customized. But turning data into insight is an algorithmic process. That's what BI does, but that's like a few people in an organization can do that. Think of them like oil. They don't mix with water, that's the business people. The merchandising specialist who figures out which one should become site and what should be the price what should be ranking. That's the merchandiser. Their customer support person, that's a business user. They don't necessarily do Python or SQL, so what happens is in businesses you have the data people like water and the business people who touch the customer and interact with them every day, they're like the water. They don't mix. The idea of ThoughtSpot is very simple. We don't want this demarcation. We don't want this chasm. We want to break it so that every single person who interact with the customer should be able to have an interactive storytelling with the data, so that every decision that they make takes data into insight to knowledge to action, and that decision-making pipeline cannot be gut driven alone. It has to be enabled by data science and human experience coming together. So in our view, a well deployed data platform, decision-making platform, will enhance and augment human experience, as opposed to human experience says, this data says that, so you've got to pick one. That's an old model and that has been the approach with natural language based interactive access with the BI being done automated through AI in the backend, parts what we are able to put very complex data science in front of a 20 year experienced merchandising specialist in a large e-commerce website without learning Python, without learning people, without understanding data warehouse >> Right so, a couple of things I want to pick up on. I mean data is plentiful, insights aren't. That's really the takeaway from one of the things that you mentioned and this notion of storytelling is very, very important. I mean, all business people, they better be storytellers in some way shape or form and what better way to tell stories than with data, and so, because as you say it's no longer gut feel, it's not the answer anymore. So it seems to me Sudheesh, that you guys are transformative. The decision to focus on the global 2000 and really not, get washed up in the Excel, well I could just do it in Excel, or I'm going to go get Power BI, it's good enough. It's really, you're trying to be transformative and you've got a really disruptive model that we talked about before, search led and you're speaking to the system, or, typing in a way that's more natural, I wonder if you could comment on that and particularly that disruption of that transformation. >> Remember we are selling to global 2000. Almost all of them will have Tableau or one of these power BI or one of these solutions already, so you're not trying to go right and change that. What we have done is very clearly focus on use cases. We're transforming data into action. We will move the needle for the bit, but for example with the COVID situation going on, one of the most popular use cases for us is around working capital management. Now a CFO who's been in the business for 20 or 30 years is an expert and have the right kind of gut feeling about how her business is running when it comes to working capital. However, imagine now she can do 20 what-if scenarios in the next five seconds or next 10 minutes without going to the SPN 18, without going to the BI team. She can say what if we reduce hiring in Japan and instead we focus them on Singapore? What if we move 20% of marketing dollars from Germany to New York? What would be the impact of AR going up by 1% versus AP going down by 1%? She needs to now do complex scenarios, but without delay. It's sort of like how do I find a restaurant through Yelp versus going to the lobby to talk to a specialist who tells me the local restaurant. This interactive database storytelling for gut enhances the decision-making is very powerful. This is why, customer have, our largest customer has spent more than $26 million with ThougthSpot and this is not small. Our average is around close to 700k. This week for example, we are having a webinar where Verizon's SVP of Analytics specifically focused on finance. He's actually going to be on a webinar with our CFO. Our CFO Sophie, one of our financial specialists and Jeff Noto from Verizon are going to be on this talking about working capital management. What parts ThoughtSpot is a portion of, but they are sharing their experience of how do we manage, so that kind of varies, like extremely rigid focus on use cases, supply chain, modeling different things so that someone who knows Asia can really interact with the data to figure out if our supply chain from Bangladesh is going to be impacted because of COVID can we go to Ecuador? What will that look like? What will be the cost? What's the transportation cost, the fuel cost, Business has become so complex you don't have time to take five, six days to look at the report, no matter how pretty that report is, you have to make it efficient. You need to be able to make a lightning fast decision and something like COVID is really exposing all of that because day by day situation on the ground is changing. You know, employees are calling in sick. The virus is breaking out in one place, other place. If it's not, curves are going up and down so you cannot have any sort of delay between human experience and data signs and all of that comes down to your point telling visual stories so that the organization can rally behind the changes that they want to make. >> So these are mission-critical use cases. They are big problems that you're solving and attacking. As you said, you're not all things to all people. One of the things you're not is a data store, right? So you've got a partner, you've got to have an ecosystem, whether it's cloud databases, the cloud itself. I wonder if you could talk about some of the key partnerships that you're forming and how you're going to market and how that's affecting your business. >> Yeah, I mean one of the things that I've always believed in Silicon Valley is that companies die out of indigestion, not out of starvation. You try to do everything. That's how you end up dying and for us in the space of data, it's an extremely humbling space because there is so much to do, data prep, data warehousing, you know a mash-up of data, hosting of data, We have clearly decided that our ability is best spent on making artificial intelligence to work, interactive storytelling for business use and that's it. With that said, we needed a high velocity agility partner in the back end and Cloud based data warehouse have become a huge tailwind for us because our entire customer deployments are on Cloud, and the number one, obviously as you know from Frank's thing, the Snowflake has actually given, customers have seen Snowflakes plus ThoughtSpot is actually a good thing and we are exclusive in global 2000 and the Snowflake is climbing up there and we are able to build a good mutual partnership, but we are also seeing a really creative partnership all the way from product design to go to market and compensation alignment with Amazon on their push on Redshift as well. Google, we have announced partnership. There is a little bit of (mic cuts out) in the beginning we are getting, and just a couple of weeks ago we started working with Microsoft on their Azure Synapse algo. Now I would say that it's lagging, we still have work to do but Amazon and Snowflake are really pushing in terms of what customers want to see, and it completely aligns with our value popular, one plus one equals three. It really works well for our customers >> And Google is what, BigQuery plus Google Cloud, or what are you doing there? >> Yep so both Amazon and Google. Well, what we are doing at three different pieces. One if obviously the hosting of their cloud platforms. Second is data warehouse and enterprise data warehouse, which is Redshift and BigQuery. Third, we are also pretty good at taking machine learning algorithms that they have built for specific verticals. We're going to take those and then ingest them and deliver better. So for example if you are one of the largest supply companies in the world and you want to know what's the shipment rate from China and it shows and then the next thing you want to know is what the failure rate on this based on last behavior when you compressed a shipment rate, and that probably could use a bit of specific algorithms and you know Google and others have actually built a library of algorithms that can be injected into ThoughtSpot. We will simply answer the question of we may have gotten that algorithm from the Google library, sort of the business use is concerned. It doesn't really matter, so we have made all that invisible and we are able to deliver democratized access to Bespoke Insights to a business user, who are too sort of been afraid to deal with the sector data. >> Since you mentioned that you've got obviously several hundred million dollars in cash. You've raised over half a billion. You've talked previously about potential acquisitions, about IPO, are you considering acquisitions? M&A at this point in time? I mean there may be some deals out there. There's certainly some talent out there, but boy the market is changing so fast. I mean, it seems to, certain sectors are actually doing quite well. Will you consider M&A at this point? >> Yes, so I think IPO and M&A are two different-- IPO definitely, it will be foolish to say that this hasn't pushed our clients back a little bit because this is a huge event. I think there will be a correction across valuation and all of that. However, it is also important for us we use this opportunity to look at how we are investing our resources and investment for long-term versus the short-term and make sure that we are more focused and more tightening at the belt. We are doing that internally. Having said that, being a private company our valuation is, you know at least in theory, frozen, and then we have a pretty good cash position of close to $300 million, which means that it is absolutely an opportunity for us to seriously consider M&A. The important thing going back to my adage of, companies don't die out of starvation. It is critical to make sure that whatever we do, we do it with clarity. Are we doing it for talent? Are we doing it for tech? Or are we doing it for market? When you have a massive event like this, it is a poor idea to go after new market. It is important to go to our existing customers who are very large global 2000 firms and then identify problems that we cannot solve otherwise and then add technology to solve those problems, so technology acquisitions are absolutely something to consider, but it needs some more time to settle in because, the first two weeks were all people who were blindsided by this, then the last two weeks we have now gotten the mojo back in sales and mojo back in engineering, and now I think it is time for us to digest and prepare for these next two, three quarters of event and as part of that, companies like us who are fortunate enough to be on a good cash position, we'll absolutely look for interesting and good deals in the M&S space. >> Yeah, it makes sense, is tell and tech and, post IPO you can worry about Tam expansion. You'll be under pressure to do that as the CEO, but for now that's a very pragmatic approach. My last question is, there's some things when you think about, you say five weeks now you've been essentially on lockdown. You must, as many of us start thinking about wow, a lot of this work from home which came so fast people wouldn't even think about it earlier. You know, some companies mandated the beehive approach. Now everybody's open to that. There are certain things that are likely to remain permanent post COVID. Have you thought much about that? Generally and specifically how it might affect your business, the permanence of post COVID. Your thoughts. >> Yeah I've thought a lot about it. In fact, this morning I was speaking with our CRO Brian McCarthy about this. I think the change will happen, think of like an onion's inner most layer, I think the most, my hope is, that the biggest change will be in every one of us internally, as a what sort of a person am I and what does my position in the world means. The ego of each one of us that we carry because if this global event in one shot did not make you rethink your own sort of position in this big universe I think that's a mess. So the first thing has to be about being a better person. The second thing is, I had this two, three days of fever which was negative for COVID but I isolated myself, but that gave me sort of an idea of dipping in the dark room where I'm hoping my family won't get infected and you know my parents are in India so I sort of also realized that what is really important for you in life and how much family should mean to you, so that goes to the first, yourself second, your relationship with family, but having said that, the third thing when it comes to business building is also the importance for building with quality people, because when things go wrong it is so critical to have people who believe in the purpose of what you are trying to build. People with good faith and unshakable faith, personal faith and unshakable faith in the purpose of the company and most importantly you mentioned something which is the story telling. People, leaders who can absolutely communicate with clarity and certainty. It becomes the most important thing to lead an organization. I mean, you are a small business owner. You know we are in a small company with around 500 people. There is nothing like sitting at home waiting to see how the company is doing over email if you're a friend line engineer or a seller. Communication becomes so critical, so having the trust and the respect of organization and have the ability to clearly and transparently communicate is the most important thing for the company and over communicating due to the time of crisis. These things are so useful even after this crisis is over. Obviously from a technology point of view, you know people have been speaking a lot about working remotely and technology changes, security, those things will happen but I think if these three things were to happen in that order. Be a better person, be a better family member and be a better leader, I think the world will be better off and the last thing I'll also tell you, that you know in Silicon Valley sometimes we have this disregard for arts and literature and fight over science. I hope that goes away, because I can't imagine living without books, without movies, without Netflix and everything. Art makes yourself creative and enriches our lives. You know, sports is no longer there on TV and the fact that people are able to immerse their imagination in books and fiction and watch TV. That also reminds you how important it is to have a good balance between arts and science in this world, so I have a long list of things that I hope we as a people and as a society will get better. >> Yeah, a lot more game playing in our household and it's good to reconnect in that regard. Well Sudheesh, you've always been a very clear thinker and you're in a great spot and an awesome leader. Thanks so much for coming on theCUBE. It was really great to see you again. The signal here is all about automation, robotic process automation, software robots, we're seeing the ascendancy of that market space. I'm Dave Vellante with Stu Miniman. This is UiPath's Forward conference, big user conference, UiPath Forward Americas, about 1500 people here, Stu. They have conferences all over the world, I think I heard 14,000 people in the last year have attended such shows. They're intimate, there are a lot of partners here, they're loud, they're a lot of good energy. Ana Cinca is here, she's the Vice President of Enabling Technologies, and she's joined by old friend Tom Clancy, who's the Senior Vice President of UiPath Learning, both folks from UiPath, welcome. Thanks for coming to theCUBE. >> Thank you for having us. >> So Ana, let's start with you. VP of Enabling Technologies. What does that mean, what's that role? >> Well, my role in the organization is to generate a set of non-core products and programs that are creating an ecosystem that is actually contributing actively into accelerating the adoption of the core platform. And that would be through learning, through generating new products like the UiPath Go!, the Marketplace, or constantly engaging the community of users and so on. >> Okay, so you started the training program, correct? >> Ana: Yeah. >> How did that get started? What was your kind of mission, how'd you do it? >> Well it started from a very simple need. Back then, about two years ago, we were, a bunch of my team members were a bunch of RPA developers, who were losing their time only delivering training, so, two years ago about 500 trainings, five days per week, per year. That were a lot of training, so we said, we need to automate this, we need to do something about it. And the only thing that could come into our mind was to, we got inspired by the Udemy, by Coursera, by all the right courses out there, like platforms out there, which were very democratic in sharing the knowledge. So we said, how about we actually create a set of online courses that are really, really good, RPA focused, UiPath focused, courses, and put it out there? That's how it all started, we just wanted to get rid of these repetitive trainings, ultimately. >> Alright, so you had to do it for yourselves and then. >> Ana: Absolutely, yeah. >> So Stu, we heard today from Daniel, he kind of did the moon shot. He said we are going to train a million people in three years, right? >> Well, Tom, it seems like you've got a challenge in front of you to really scale this business. We've talked with you for years, back in your EMC days, your not just storage but new architectures, this convergent approach to the silos, and then cloud architects, really training kind of next generation of the work force in IT, give us a little bit, what's the same, what's different between what you did back at EMC and what you're doing now here with RPA? >> So the biggest difference between EMC and UiPath is EMC had a technology that a lot of people thought was kind of commodity, right? So, the excitement wasn't there when you started going outside of your partners and customers, right? This technology, there is passion about this throughout the entire globe. This is the next big wave, and so, if you're going to scale a program like this, you have to have a bunch of different factors on your side. What Ana just talked about is the academy, you have to bring value somehow, and that starts with having the right courses. If you don't have the courses built up, then you're starting from zero, right, from scratch. But, the other thing that's even more important, is the passion from the CEO. You know, when I first met with Daniel, it was actually sort of an interview, he was, he talked about, you know, employee training, partner training, customer training, but his passion and forty-five minutes of the hour was talking about educating the planet, right? And so he started with universities, which that was kind of a no brainer. And then he went to Youth in Action, under-represented groups, and so forth. The other factor that's really important is having the right team, so, at UiPath, the team is the company, everybody wants to do this. If you're the leader in India, Japan, China, the US, they're all coming to us saying "We need this program." Not just universities but all the way down to the youths. And then, you need a good academic alliance team. So the team that we're building is going to leverage academy, but we are bringing in some of those EMC academic alliance people, we're bringing in a person from Salesforce.com that was running a big piece of it, starts today. We're bringing in a VMware person, a Cisco person, so we're getting all the best. Those are the best programs in the industry. >> Tom, there's one underlying thing, that I saw, a similarity, is back when you talked about convergence or cloud, there was an underlying fear of "Oh my gosh, I'm not going to have the skills, I'm going to be out of a job." Automation's always been that thing "Oh wait, if I automate it, what's that mean for me?" How do you address that? >> Well, first of all, there's a report all that says by 2030, 1.5 billion jobs will be impacted. It doesn't say negative, it just says impacted. So, everybody is going to have to understand that this is coming, and how does it impact me? We're going to put together, as part of this, we'll have an upscaling rescaling, so everybody, it doesn't matter who you are, will be able to leverage the academy, and we'll be tweaking the academy courses, so if it's upscaling rescaling, they will take the courses in a different way, in a different format, than the university students, than the Youth in Action, so we'll target those different audiences, and the other, one other thing is marketing is hugely important, because you can't rely on the training group to get the word out. So, Bobby Patrick and his team, are working hand-in-hand with us to drive the awareness across the globe. >> So Ana, when we first heard about RPA and UiPath, we read the Forrester report, and said "Okay, there's a few leaders out there, let's "play with it, let's go download the software "and see how hard it is to do." Turned out, we could only get our hands on UiPath software, it was very easy to get our hands on the software, it was very open. Some of the other guys were like, "Why do you want to use it?" Forget it. But then we built some automations, and it was kind of, you know, it took a little, there was a little bit of a learning curve, but it was not a developer who did it, so it was relatively low code, or even no code. So, when you started this program and as you scale it, who are you targeting? Is it the hardcore developer, is it the, you know, RPA developer, is it the citizen developer, both? And how do you adjust the training correspondingly? >> Yeah, so, first of all, the way we set up the trainings, were, we wanted to make sure that, exactly like we did with the core platform, that was the first RPA software that had a trial version that was available for everyone, right? We had to do the same thing in learning and we're an academy, so what we said were we're launching courses which are free of charge, online, for everyone to use. But, moreover than that, what we wanted to do, is to, have courses that take someone from a very basic foundation level, of basic programming, and actually guide him or her through a learning curve that will get them to an expert level. So, the way we built the courses, are in such a matter that it is very easy to be followed by anyone, actually. And now, that's the reason why, now we're having not only courses for the RPA developers, the techie guys, or solution architects, or infrastructure engineers, but, moreover than that, we're tackling into the space of non-technical people who are equally very important in the RPA journey. Like business analysts, the RPA project managers, and so on. So we're trying to cover all the personas that are critical in an RPA COE set up. >> So it's interesting, Tom, hearing you say you're recruiting people from Cisco, Vmware, some EMC folks, a lot of the traditional, some would say legacy, enterprise companies, who are constantly in the process of reskilling, so I would think that these folks would be very receptive to that. Now you think about Vmware admin, Cisco certified engineers, Microsoft certifications, they sort of led to full employment for at least some period of time. Do you think RPA skills are going to be similar, in that they are going to be in such demand, if young people start to get trained in RPA they're going to essentially have full employment for life, or do you think it's more fleeting that that? You're thoughts? >> So I've been here for three months now, so I guess that makes me a veteran at UiPath, but robotics is going to be in everybody's job. So one of the things that it took me a while to kind of grasp when I was talking to Daniel the first time, the first meeting I mentioned, is he said that there will be at least one robot on every desktop moving forward. This is going to be, you know, when you had the flip phone before, well actually, when people went from the big cell phones and people were saying everybody's going to have a cell phone, you know, everybody looked like "That's kind of crazy," but then, next thing you know, you have a computer on your phone, and everybody has at least one phone. This is going to be the same way with robots. It's going to be ubiquitous across the entire industry. So, people will grow up understanding what robots are. That's why we're going after the youth, so they understand robots right from the get go. And then, it will integrated into everybody's job across the globe, so it's not fleeting at all, it's actually the complete opposite. >> How do you guys measure success? Obviously, you got to get to a million in three years, that's a lot of training. How else do you measure success? What kind of parameters do you set? Tests you take, how do you measure it? >> Want to take that one up for scaling? >> So, one of the things we did, well Ana, one of the things that Ana did before I got here, was they built certification. Certification is going to continue to get more and more important for us. You know, so, think Microsoft, Cisco, certification, and so forth, and so, we believe we will have the industry standard certification program, period. But one of the things we did, was we built our own certification platform, high stakes certification. So what that does is, we do not have to charge, or charge much, any of the people going through our courses and certification. So, today, because we had to go through a third party, we're charging 850 dollars per test. This quarter, through the end of the year, it's going to be zero, just to bring more people in. And then, going forward, it would be significantly lower than 150. What we want to do, and what we will do, is democratize learning and certification for robots. >> I think this is huge, go on you want to add something? >> Yeah, I really want to add one more thing, because what we're doing together, is actually, through the way we're approaching community, and through the spaces that we have already built so far like the academy, the forum, we're bringing now the UiPath Go! in October, the end of October, the project space, all holistically wrapped up in a new version of the community. What we're trying to get out there is an RPA developer getting trained on the academy, being certified, but then practicing within the UiPath universe. Ultimately, where we want to get to, is to measure success also through the number of community users, of end-users, who are not only certified, but we will be able to see what is their activity status, like reputation, and recognition, within the community itself. And, hence, ultimately, reaching up to a stage, where we will be able to pinpoint to a true UiPath expert elite of people throughout the world. >> I love that it's a community driven measurement. >> Everything goes into building up a holistic and global community. >> Very open-- >> If I could just say one thing on community if you just look at the education and the different audiences, you know, let's say, you know, people that do robotics and they get certified, all the way down to youth, we will have a community, where all these different organizations are talking to each other, and to professionals. So, you might have a ten year old in Bangladesh, that is on the community asking questions, and you might have an engineer in Romania at UiPath answering those questions because they're part of the community. Or, it could be a customer or partner, you know, in Philadelphia, but they're all part of the community, we're bringing all these people together. So, things like STEM, Women in Coding, one person came up to me last night, he was so excited, he said "I represent a lot of the black community when "it comes to education and I really want to get my teams "across the country involved in this." >> Phenomenal, now, the no cost training is available roughly when? >> Yeah, right now. >> It's today? >> Well no cost training has been available-- >> Since the beginning. >> That was a decision that Ana made 18 months ago. If somebody, if a customer wants to have a seminar, or something like that, we have third-party training companies that will go in, and they'll charge, but if you go online to the academy, 100 percent free. And the certification for the next quarter is going to be 100 percent free. >> That's unbelievable, because, you know, I got three kids in college and one of them is he's doing Python, he's doing R, he's doing Tableau and he's texting me, "Hey, these Tableau courses "are really expensive, can you pay for it?" And I'm like well, what's the ROI? And I'm sayin' learn about RPA, because it's going to change the world, you know, visualizations important and all that stuff's important, but that's, I think, a huge investment that you guys are making, and then also, helps me understand how you guys plan on staying ahead. So congratulations on getting this started, Tom, you basically came out of retirement, you know, quasi-retirement so it had to be pretty alluring. Red Hat Summit 2018 | Day 2 | PM Keynote


 

[Music] and y'all know that these [Music] ladies and gentlemen please take your seats and silence your cellphone's our program will begin shortly ladies and gentlemen please welcome Red Hat executive vice president and chief people officer dallisa Alexander an executive vice president and chief marketing officer Tim Layton [Music] hi everyone we're so excited to kick off this afternoon day 2 at the Red Hat summit we've got a stage full of stories about people making amazing contributions with open source well you know dallisa you and I both been coming to this event for a long long time so what keeps you coming back well you know the summit started as a tech conference an amazing tech conference but now it's expanded to be so much more this year I'm really thrilled that we're able to showcase the power of open source going way beyond the data center and beyond the cloud and I'm here also on a secret mission oh yes I'm here to make sure you don't make too many bad dad jokes so there's no such thing as a bad dad they're just dad jokes are supposed to be bad but I promise to keep it to my limit but I do have one okay I may appeal to the geeks in the audience okay so what do you call a serving tray full of empty beer cans yeah we container platform well that is your one just the one that's what I only got a budget of one all right well you know I have to say though in all seriousness I'm with you yeah I've been coming to the summit since its first one and I always love to hear what new directions people are scoring what ideas they're pursuing and the perspectives they bring and this afternoon for example you're gonna hear a host of different perspectives from a lot of voices you wouldn't often see on a technology mainstage in our industry and it's all part of our open source series live and I have to say there's been a lot of good buzz about this session all week and I'm truly honored and inspired to be able to introduce them all later this afternoon I can tell you over the course the last few weeks I've spent time with all of them and every single one of them is brilliant they're an innovator they're fearless and they will restore your faith in the next generation you know I can't wait to see all these stories all of that and we've got some special guests that are surprised in store for us you know one of the things that I love about the people that are coming on the stage today with us is that so many of them teach others how to code and they're also bringing more people that are very different in to our open-source communities helping our community is more innovative and impactful and speaking of innovative and impactful that's the purpose of our open brand project right that's right we're actually in the process of exploring a refresh of our mark and we'd really like your help as well because we're doing this all in the open we've we've been doing it already in the open and so please join us in our feedback zone booth at the summit to tell us what you think now it's probably obvious but I'm big into Red Hat swag I've got the shirt I've got my pen I've got the socks so this is really important to me personally especially that when my 15 year old daughter sees me in my full regalia she calls me adorable okay that joke was fed horrible as you're done it wasn't it wasn't like I got way more well Tim thanks for helping us at this stage for today it's time to get started with our first guest all right I'll be back soon thank you the people I'm about to bring on the stage are making outstanding contributions to open source in new and brave ways they are the winners of the 2018 women and open source Awards the women in open source awards was created to highlight the contributions that women are making to open source and to inspire new generations to join the movement our judges narrowed down the panel a very long list just ten finalists and then the community selected our two winners that were honoring today let's learn a little bit more about them [Music] a lot of people assume because of my work that I must be a programmer engineer when in fact I specifically chose and communications paths for my career but what's fascinating to me is I was able to combine my love of Communications and helping people with technology and interesting ways I'm able to not be bound by the assumptions that everybody has about what the technology can and should be doing and can really ask the question of what if it could be different I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare just because I feel like has the most impact in helping people a lot of what I've been working on is geared towards developing technology and the health space towards developing world one of the coolest things about open-source is bringing people together working with other people to accomplish amazing things there's so many different projects that you could get involved in you don't even have to be the smartest person to be able to make impact when you're actually developing for someone I think it's really important to understand the need when you're pushing innovation forward sometimes the cooler thing is not [Music] for both of us to have kind of a health care focus I think it's cool because so many people don't think about health care as being something that open-source can contribute to it took a while for it to even get to the stage where it is now where people can open-source develop on concepts and health and it's an untapped potential to moving the world for this award is really about highlighting the work of dozens of women and men in this open source community that have made this project possible so I'm excited for more people to kind of turn their open-source interest in healthcare exciting here is just so much [Music] I am so honored to be able to welcome to the stage some brilliant women and opensource first one of our esteemed judges Denise Dumas VP of software engineering at Red Hat she's going to come up and share her insights on the judging process Denise so you've been judging since the very beginning 2015 what does this judge this being a judge represents you what does the award mean to you you know every year it becomes more and more challenging to select the women an opensource winner because every year we get more nominees and the quality of the submissions well there are women involved in so many fabulous projects so the things that I look for are the things that I value an open source initiative using technology to solve real world problems a work ethic that includes sin patches and altruism and I think that you'll see that this year's nominees this year's winners really epitomize those qualities totally agree shall we bring them on let's bring them on let's welcome to the stage Zoe de gay and Dana Lewis [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] alright let's take a seat [Applause] well you both have had an interesting path to open-source zuy you're a biomedical engineering student any of it you have a degree in public relations tell us what led to your involvement and open source yeah so coming to college I was new I was interested in science but I didn't want to be a medical doctor and I didn't want to get involved in wet lab research so through classes I was taking oh that's why I did biomedical engineering and through classes I was taking I found the classroom to be very dry and I didn't know how how can I apply what I'm learning and so I got involved in a lot of entrepreneurship on campus and through one of the projects I was asked to build a front end and I had no idea how to go about doing that and I had some basic rudimentary coding knowledge and what happened was I got and was digging deep and then found an open source library that was basically building a similar thing that I needed and that was where I learned about open source and I went from there now I'm really excited to be able to contribute to many communities and work on a variety of projects amazing contributions Dana tell us about your journey well I come from a non-traditional background but I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14 and over the next couple years got really frustrated with the limitations of my own diabetes devices but felt like I couldn't change them because that wasn't my job as a patient but it was actually through social media I discovered someone who had solved one of the problems that I had been found having which was getting date off my diabetes device and that's how I learned about open source was when he was willing to share his code with me so when we turned around and made this hybrid closed-loop artificial pancreas system it was a no brainer to make our work open source as well that's right absolutely and we see using the hash tag we are not waiting can you tell us about that yeah so this hash tag was created actually before I even discovered the open source diabetes world but I loved it because it really illustrates exactly the fact that we have this amazing technology in our hands in our pockets and we can solve some of our most common problems so yes you could wait but waiting is now a choice with open source we have the ability to solve some of our hardest problems even problems dealing with life and death that's great so zuy with the vaccine carrier system that you helped to build how were you able to identify the need and where did you build it yes so I think before you even build anything first need to understand what is the problem that you're trying to solve and that really was the case when starting this project I got to collaborate with engineers in Kampala Uganda and travel there and actually interview stakeholders in the medical field medical doctors as well as pharmaceutical companies and from there I really got to understand the health system there as well as what is how do vaccines enter the country and how can we solve this problem and that's how we came up with the solution for an IOT based vaccine carrier tracking system I think it's really important especially today when products might be flashy to also understand what is the need behind it and how do we solve problems with these products yeah yeah it's so interesting how both of you have this interest in health care Dana how do you see open-source playing a role in healthcare but first before you answer that tell us about your shirt so this shirt has the code of my artificial pancreas on it and I love it as an illustration of no thank you I love it as an illustration of how open-source is more than we think it is I've just been blown away by the contributions of people in my open-source communities and I think that that is what we should apply to all of healthcare there's a lot of tools and technologies that are solving real world problems and I think if we take what we know in technology and apply it to healthcare we'll solve a lot of problems more quickly but it really needs to be recognizing everything an open source it's the documentation it's the collaboration it's the problem-solving it's working together to take technologies that we didn't previously think we're applicable and finding new ways to apply it it's a great answer Sooey yeah I think especially where healthcare is related to people and open-source is the right way to collaborate with people all over the world especially in the project I've been working on we're looking at vaccines in Uganda but the same system can be applied in any other country and then you can look at cross countries health systems there and from there it becomes bigger and bigger and I think it's really important for people who have an idea and want to take it further to know that open-source is a way that you could actually take your idea further whether you have a technical background or not so yeah stories are amazing you're just an inspiration for everyone in open-source I want to thank you so much for joining us here today let's give another round of applause to our winners [Applause] [Music] you know the tagline for the award is honor celebrate inspire and I feel like we've been doing that today very very well and I know that so many people have been inspired today especially the next generation who go on to do things we can't even dream of yet [Music] I think collabs important because we need to make sure we get younger children interested in technology so that they understand the value of it but also that there are a lot of powerful women in technology and they can be one of them I hope after this experience maybe we'll get some engineers and some girls working our hot so cool right well we have some special guests convite for the club stage now I'd like to invite Tim back and also introduce Red Hat's own Jamie Chappell along with our collab students please welcome Gabby tenzen Sofia lyric Camila and a Volyn [Applause] you've been waiting for this moment for a while we're so excited hear all about your experiences but Jamie first tell us about collab sure so collab is red hats way of teaching students about the power of open source and collaboration we kicked off a little over a year ago in Boston and that was so successful that we decided to embark on an East Coast tour so in October we made stops at middle schools in New York DC and Raleigh and these amazing people over here are from that tour and this week they have gone from student to teacher so they've hosted two workshops where they have taught Red Hat summit attendees how to turn raspberry pies into digital cameras they assigned a poem song of the open road by Walt Whitman and they've been working at the open source stories booth helping to curate photos for an installation we're excited to finish up tomorrow so amazing and welcome future women in open source we want to know all about your experiences getting involved can you tell us tenzen tell us about something you've learned so during my experience with collab I learned many things but though however the ones that I valued the most were open source and women empowerment I just I was just so fascinated about how woman were creating and inventing things for the development of Technology which was really cool and I also learned about how open source OH was free and how anyone could access it and so I also learned that many people could you know add information to it so that other people could you learn from it and use it as well and during Monday's dinner I got this card saying that the world needed more people like you and I realized through my experience with collab that the world does not only need people like me but also everyone else to create great technology so ladies you know as you were working on your cameras and the coding was there a moment in time that you had an AHA experience and I'm really getting this and I can do this yes there was an aha moment because midway through I kind of figured out well this piece of the camera went this way and this piece of the camera did it go that way and I also figured out different features that were on the camera during the camera build I had to aha moments while I was making my camera the first one was during the process of making my camera where I realized I was doing something wrong and I had to collaborate with my peers in order to troubleshoot and we realize I was doing something wrong multiple times and I had to redo it and redo it but finally I felt accomplished because I finished something I worked hard on and my second aha moment was after I finished building my camera I just stared at it and I was in shock because I built something great and it was so such a nice feeling so we talked a lot about collaboration when we were at the lab tell us about how learning about collaboration in the lab is different than in school so in school collaboration is usually few and far between so when we went to collab it allowed us to develop new skills of creativity and joining our ideas with others to make something bigger and better and also allowed us to practice lots of cooperation an example of this is in my group everybody had a different problem with their pie camera and we had to use our different strengths to like help each other out and everybody ended up assembling and working PI camera great great awesome collaboration in collab and the school is very different because in collab we were more interactive more hands-on and we had to work closer together to achieve our own goals and collaboration isn't just about working together but also combining different ideas from different people to get a product that is so much better than some of its parts so girls one other interesting observation this actually may be for the benefit of the folks in our audience but out here we have represented literally hundreds and hundreds of companies all of whom are going to be actually looking for you to come to work for them after today we get first dibs that's right but um you know if you were to have a chance to speak to these companies and say what is it that they could do to help inspire you know your your friends and peers and get them excited about open source what would you say to them well I'm pretty sure we all have app store and I'm pretty sure we've all downloaded an app on that App Store well instead of us downloading app State well the computer companies or the phone companies they could give us the opportunity to program our own app and we could put it on the App Store great idea absolutely I've got to tell you I have a 15 year old daughter and I think you're all going to be an inspiration to her for the same absolutely so much so I see you brought some cameras why don't we go down and take a picture let's do it [Applause] all right I will play my very proud collab moderator role all right so one two three collab okay one two three [Applause] yeah so we're gonna let leave you and let you tell us more open source stories all right well thank you great job thank you all and enjoy the rest of your time at Summit so appreciate it thanks thank you everyone pretty awesome pretty awesome and I would just like to say they truly are fedorable that's just um so if you would like to learn more as you heard the girls say they're actually Manning our open-source stories booth at the summit you know please come down and say hello the stories you've seen thus far from our women and open-source winners as well as our co-op students are really bringing to life the theme of this year's summit the theme of ideas worth exploring and in that spirit what we'd like to do is explore another one today and that is how open-source concepts thrive and expand in the neverending organic way that they do much like the universe metaphor that you see us using here it's expanding in new perspectives and new ideas with voices beyond their traditional all starting to make open-source much bigger than what it was originally started as fact open-source goes back a long way long before actually the term existed in those early days you know in the early 80s and the like most open-source projects were sort of loosely organized collections of self-interested developers who are really trying to build low-cost more accessible replicas of commercial software yet here we are 2018 the world is completely different the open-source collaborative development model is the font of almost all original new innovation in software and they're driven from communities communities of innovation RedHat of course has been very fortunate to have been able to build an extraordinary company you know whose development model is harnessing these open-source innovations and in turning them into technologies consumable by companies even for their most mission-critical applications the theme for today though is we see open-source this open source style collaboration and innovation moving beyond just software this collaborative community innovation is starting to impact many facets of society and you're starting to see that even with the talks we've had already too and this explosion of community driven innovation you know is again akin to this universe metaphor it expands in all directions in a very organic way so for red hat you know being both beneficiaries of this approach and stewards of the open collaboration model we see it important for us to give voice to this broader view of open source stories now when we say open source in this context of course will meaning much more than just technology it's the style of collaboration the style of interaction it's the application of open source style methods to the innovation process it's all about accelerating innovation and expanding knowledge and this can be applied to a whole range of human endeavors of course in education as we just saw today on stage in agriculture in AI as the open source stories we shared at last year's summit in emerging industries like healthcare as we just saw in manufacturing even the arts all these are areas that are now starting to benefit from collaboration in driving innovation but do we see this potentially applying to almost any area of human endeavor and it expands again organically expanding existing communities with the addition of new voices and new participants catalyzing new communities and new innovations in new areas as we were talking about and even being applied inside organizations so that individual companies and teams can get the same collaborative innovation effects and most profound certainly in my perspective is so the limitless bounds that exist for how this open collaboration can start to impact some of humankind's most fundamental challenges we saw a couple of examples in fact with our women and open-source winners you know that's amazing but it also potentially is just the tip of the iceberg so we think it's important that these ideas you know as they continue to expand our best told through storytelling because it's a way that you can embrace them and find your own inspirations and that's fundamentally the vision behind our open-source stories and it's all about you know building on what's come before you know the term we use often is stay the shoulders are giants for a lot of the young people that you've seen on this stage and you're about to see on this stage you all are those giants you're the reason and an hour appears around the world are the reasons that open-source continues to expand for them you are those giants the other thing is we all particularly in this room those of us have been around open-source we have an open-source story of our own you know how were you introduced the power of open-source how did you engage a community who inspired you to participate those are all interesting elements of our personal open-source stories and in most cases each of them are punctuated by you here my question to the girls on stage an aha moment or aha moments you know that that moment of realization that enlightens you and causes you to think differently and to illustrate I'm going to spend just a few minutes sharing my open-source story for for one fundamental reason I've been in this industry for 38 years I am a living witness to the entire life of open-source going back to the early 80s I've been doing this in the open-source corner of the industry since the beginning if you've listened to Sirhan's command-line heroes podcasts my personal open story will actually be quite familiar with you because my arc is the same as the first several podcast as she talked about I'm sort of a walking history lesson in fact of open source I wound up at most of the defining moments that should have changed how we did this not that I was particularly part of the catalyst I was just there you know sort of like the Forrest Gump of open-source I was at all these historical things but I was never really sure how it went up there but it sure was interesting so with that as a little bit of context I'm just gonna share my aha moment how did I come to be you know a 59 year old in this industry for 38 years totally passionate about not just open source driving software innovation but what open source collaboration can do for Humanity so in my experience I had three aha moments I just like to share with you the first was in the early 80s and it was when I was introduced to the UNIX operating system and by the way if you have a ha moment in the 80s this is what it looks like so 1982 mustache 19 where were you 2018 beard that took a long time to do all right so as I said my first aha moment was about the technology itself in those early days of the 80s I became a product manager and what at the time was digital equipment corporation's workstation group and I was immediately drawn to UNIX I mean certainly these this is the early UNIX workstation so the user interface was cool but what I really loved was the ability to do interactive programming via the shell but by a--basically the command line and because it was my day job to help figure out where we took these technologies I was able to both work and learn and play all from the same platform so that alone was was really cool it was a very accessible platform the other thing that was interesting about UNIX is it was built with networking and and engagement in mind had its own networking stack built in tcp/ip of course and actually built in a set of services for those who've been around for a while think back to things like news groups and email lists those were the first enablers for cross internet collaboration and that was really the the elements that really spoke to me he said AHA to me that you know this technology is accessible and it lets people engage so that was my first aha moment my second aha moment came a little bit later at this point I was an executive actually running Digital Equipment Corporation UNIX systems division and it was at a time where the UNIX wars were raging right all these companies we all compartmentalized Trump those of the community and in the end it became an existential threat to the platform itself and we came to the point where we realized we needed to actually do something we needed to get ahead of this or UNIX would be doomed the particular way we came together was something called cozy but most importantly the the technique we learned was right under our noses and it was in the area of distributed computing distributed client-server computing inherently heterogenous and all these same companies that were fierce competitors at the operating system level were collaborating incredibly well around defining the generation of client-server and distributed computing technologies and it was all being done in open source under actually a BSD license initially and Microsoft was a participant Microsoft joined the open group which was the converged standards body that was driving this and they participated to ensure there was interoperability with Windows and and.net at the time now it's no spoiler alert that UNIX lost right we did but two really important things came out of that that sort of formed the basis of my second aha moment the first is as an industry we were learning how to collaborate right we were leveraging open source licenses we realized that you know these complex technologies are best done together and that was a huge epiphany for the industry at that time and the second of course is that event is what opened the door for Linux to actually solve that problem so my second aha was all about the open collaboration model works now at this point to be perfectly candidates late 1998 well we've been acquired by compacts when I'm doing the basically same role at Compaq and I really had embraced what the potential impact of this was going to be to the industry Linux was gaining traction there were a lot of open source projects emerging in distributed computing in other areas so it was pretty clear to me that the in business impact was going to be significant and and that register for me but there was seem to be a lot more to it that I hadn't really dropped yet and that's when I had my third aha moment and that was about the passion of open-source advocates the people so you know at this time I'm running a big UNIX group but we had a lot of those employees who were incredibly passionate about about Linux and open source they're actively participating so outside of working a lot of things and they were lobbying more and more for the leadership to embrace open source more directly and I have to say their passion was contagious and it eventually spread to me you know they were they were the catalyst for my personal passion and it also led me to rethink what it is we needed to go do and that's a passion that I carry forward to this day the one driven by the people and I'll tell you some interesting things many of those folks that were with us at Compaq at the time have gone on to be icons and leaders in open-source today and many of them actually are involved with with Red Hat so I'll give you a couple of names that some of whom you will know so John and Mad Dog Hall work for me at the time he was the person who wrote the first edition of Linux for dummies he did that on his own time when he was working for us he he coined he was part of the small team that coined the term open source' some other on that team that inspired me Brian Stevens and Tim Burke who wrote the first version to rent out Enterprise Linux actually they did that in Tim Burke's garage and cost Tim's still with Red Hat today two other people you've already seen him on stage today Denise Dumas and Marko bill Peter so it was those people that I was fortunate enough to work with early on who had passion for open-source and much like me they carry it forward to this day so the punchline there is they ultimately convinced us to you know embrace open-source aggressively in our strategy and one of the interesting things that we did as a company we made an equity investment in Red Hat pre-ipo and a little funny sidebar here I had to present this proposal to the compact board on investing in Red Hat which was at that time losing money hand over fist and they said well Tim how you think they're gonna make money selling free software and I said well you know I don't really know but their customers seem to love them and we need to do this and they approve the investment on the spot so you know how high do your faith and now here we are at a three billion dollar run rate of this company pretty extraordinary so from me the third and final ha was the passion of the people in the way it was contagious so so my journey my curiosity led me first to open source and then to Red Hat and it's been you know the devotion of my career for over the last thirty years and you know I think of myself as pretty literate when it comes to open source and software but I'd be the first one to admit I would have never envisioned the extent to which open source style collaboration is now being brought to bear on some of the most interesting challenges in society so the broader realization is that open source and open can really unlock the world's potential when applied in the collaborative innovative way so what about you you know you many of you particular those have been around for a while you probably have an open source story of your own for those that maybe don't or they're new to open source are new to Red Hat your open source story may be a single inspiration away it may happen here at the summit we certainly hope so it's how we build the summit to engage you you may actually find it on this stage when I bring up some of the people who are about to follow me but this is why we tell open-source stories and open source stories live so each of you hopefully has a chance to think about you know your story and how it relates over source so please take advantage of all the things that are here at the summit and and find your inspiration if you if you haven't already so next thing is you know in a spirit of our telling open source stories today we're introducing our new documentary film the science of collective discovery it's really about citizen scientists using open systems to do serious science in their backyards and environmental areas and the like we're going to preview that I'm gonna prove it preview it today and then please come see it tonight later on when we preview the whole video so let's take a look I may not have a technical scientific background but I have one thing that the scientists don't have which is I know my backyard so conventional science happens outside of public view so it's kind of in this black box so most are up in the ivory tower and what's exciting about citizen science is that it brings it out into the open we as an environmental community are engaging with the physical world every day and you need tools to do that we needed to democratize that technology we need to make it lightweight we need to make it low-cost we needed to make it open source so that we could put that technology in the hands of everyday people so they go out and make those measurements where they live and where they breathe when you first hear about an environmental organization you mostly hear about planting trees gardens things like that you don't really think about things that are really going to affect you hey we're the air be more they'd hold it in their hand making sure not to cover the intake or the exhaust I just stand here we look at the world with forensic eyes and then we build what you can't see so the approach that we're really centered on puts humans and real issues at the center of the work and I think that's the really at the core of what open source is social value that underlies all of it it really refers to sort of the rights and responsibilities that anyone on the planet has to participate in making new discoveries so really awesome and a great story and you know code newbie founder Saran yep Eric good afternoon how y'all doing today oh that was pretty weak I think you could do better than that how y'all doing today wonderful much better I'm Saran I am the founder of code newbie we have the most supportive community of programmers and people learning to code this is my very first Red Hat summits I'm super pumped super excited to be here today I'm gonna give you a talk and I'm going to share with you the key to coding progress yes and in order to do that I'm gonna have to tell you a story so two years ago I was sitting in my hotel room and I was preparing for a big talk the next morning and usually the night before I give a big talk I'm super nervous I'm anxious I'm nauseous I'm wondering why I keep doing this to myself all the speakers backstage know exactly what I'm what I'm talking about and the night before my mom knows this so she almost always calls just to check in to see how I'm doing to see how I'm feeling and she called about midnight the night before and she said how are you how are you doing are you ready and I said you know what this time I feel really good I feel confident I think I'm gonna do a great job and the reason was because two months ago I'd already given that talk in fact just a few days prior they had published the video of that talk on YouTube and I got some really really good positive feedback I got feedback from emails and DMS and Twitter and I said man I know people really like this it's gonna be great in fact that video was the most viewed video of that conference and I said to my office said you know what let's see how many people loved my talk and still the good news is that 14 people liked it and a lot more people didn't and I saw this 8 hours before I'm supposed to give that exact same talk and I said mom I gotta call you back do you like how I did that to hang up the phone as if that's how cellphones work yeah and so I looked at this and I said oh my goodness clearly there's a huge disconnect I thought they were really liked they were I thought they were into it and this showed me that something was wrong what do you do what do you do when you're about to give that same talk in 8 hours how do you begin finding out what the problem is so you can fix it I have an idea let's read the comments you got to believe you gotta have some optimism come on I said let's read the comments because I'm sure we'll find some helpful feedback some constructive criticism some insights to help me figure out how to make this talk great so that didn't happen but I did find some really colorful language and some very creative ideas of what I could do with myself now there are some kids in the audience so I will not grace you with these comments but there was this one comment that did a really great job of capturing the sentiment of what everyone else was saying I can only show you the first part because the rest is not very family-friendly but it reads like this how do you talk about coding and not fake societal issues see the thing about that talk is it wasn't just a code talk it was a code and talk is about code and something else that talked touched on code and social justice I talked a lot about how the things that we build the way we build them affect real people and their problems and their struggles and that was absolutely not okay not okay we talk about code and code only not the social justice stuff it also talked about code and diversity yeah I think we all know the diversity is really about lowering the bar it forces us to talk about people and their issues and their problems in their history and we just don't do that okay absolutely inappropriate when it comes to a Tech Talk That Talk touched on code and feelings and feelings are squishy they're messy they're icky and a lot of us feel uncomfortable with feelings feelings have no place in technology no place in code we want to talk about code and code I want you to show me that API and when you show me that new framework that new tool that's gonna solve my problems that's all I care about I want to talk about code and give me some more code with it now I host a podcast called command line heroes it's an original podcast from Red Hat super excited about it if you haven't checked it out and totally should and what I love about this show as we talk about these really important moments and open swords these inflection points moments where we see progress we move forward and what I realized looking back at those episodes is all of those episodes have a code and something let's look at a few of those the first two episodes focused on the history of operating systems as a two-part episode part 1 and part 2 and there's lots of different ways we can talk about operating systems for these two episodes we started by talking about Windows and Mac OS and how these were two very powerful very popular operating systems but a lot of a lot of developers were frustrated with them they were closed you couldn't see inside you can see what it was doing and I the developer want to know what it's doing on my machine so we kind of had a little bit of a war one such developer who was very frustrated said I'm gonna go off and do my own thing my name is Linus this thing is Linux and I'm gonna rally all these other developers all these other people from all over the old to come together and build this new thing with me that is a code and moment in that case it was code and frustration it was a team of developers a world of developers literally old world of developers who said I'm frustrated I'm fed up I want something different and I'm gonna do something about it and what's really beautiful about frustration is it the sign of passion we're frustrated because we care because we care so much we love so deeply then we want to do something better next episode is the agile revolution this one was episode three now the agile revolution is a very very important moment in open-source and technology in general and this was in response to the way that we used to create products we used to give this huge stack of specs all these docs from the higher-ups and we'd take it and we go to our little corner and we lightly code and build and then a year with Pastor here's a pass a few years have passed and we'd finally burst forth with this new product and hope that users liked it and loved it and used it and I know something else will do that today it's okay no judgment now sometimes that worked and a lot of times it didn't but whether or not it actually worked it hurt it was painful these developers not enjoy this process so what happened a dozen developers got together and literally went off into their own and created something called the agile manifesto now this was another code and moment here it's code and anger these developers were so angry that they literally left civilization went off into a mountain to write the agile manifesto and what I love about this example is these developers did not work at the same company we're not on the same team they knew each other from different conferences and such but they really came from different survive and they agreed that they were so angry they were going to literally rewrite the way we created products next as an example DevOps tear down the wall this one is Episode four now this is a bit different because we're not talking about a piece of technology or even the way we code here we're talking about the way we work together the way that we collaborate and here we have our operations folks and our developers and we've created this new kind of weird place thing called DevOps and DevOps is interesting because we've gotten to a point where we have new tools new toys so that our developers can do a lot of the stuff that only the operations folks used to be able to do that thing that took days weeks months to set up I can do it with a slider it's kind of scary I can do it with a few buttons and here we have another code and moment and here that blink is fear for two reasons the operations focus is looking over the developer folks and thinking that was my job I used to be able to do that am I still valuable do I have a place in this future do I need to retrain there's also another fear which is those developers know what they're doing do they understand the security implications they appreciate how hard it is or something to scale and how to do that properly and I'm really interested in excited to see where we go with that where we take that emotion if we look at all of season one of the podcast we see that there's always a code and whether it's a code and frustration a code and anger or a code and fear it always boils down to code and feelings feelings are powerful in almost every single episode we see that that movement forward that progress is tied back to some type of Oshin and for a lot of us this is uncomfortable feelings make us feel weird and a lot of those YouTube commenters definitely do not like this whole feeling stuff don't be like those YouTube commenters there's one thing you take away from this whole talk let it be that don't be like these YouTube commenters feelings are incredibly powerful so the next time that you're working on a project you're having a conversation about a piece of software or a new piece of technology and you start to get it worked up you get angry you get frustrated maybe you get worried you get anxious you get scared I hope you recognize that feeling as a source of energy I hope you take that energy and you help us move forward I would take that to create the next inflection point that next step in the right direction feelings are your superpowers and I hope you use your powers for good thank you so much [Applause] please welcome jewel-box chief technology officer Sara Chipps [Music] Wow there's a lot of you out here how's it going I know there's a lot of you East Coasters here as well and I'm still catching up on that sleep so I hope you guys are having a great experience also my name is Sarah I'm here from New York I have been a software developer for 17 years it's longer than some of the people on stage today I've been alive big thanks to the folks at Red Hat for letting us come and tell you a little bit about jewel box so without further ado I'm gonna do exactly that okay so today we're gonna do a few things first I'm gonna tell you why we built jewel BOTS and why we think it's a really important technology I'm gonna show you some amazing magic and then we're gonna have one of the jewel bus experts come as a special guest and talk to you more about the deep technology behind what we're building so show hands in the audience who here was under 18 years old when they started coding it's hard for me to see you guys yep look around I'd have to say at least 50% of you have your hands up all right keep your hand up if you were under 15 when you started coding I think more hands up just what is it I don't know how that mouth works but awesome okay great yeah a little of I think about half of you half of you have your hands up that's really neat I've done a bunch of informal polls on the internet about this I found that probably about two-thirds of professional coders were under 18 when they started coding I myself was 11 I was a homeschooled kid so a little weird I'm part of the generation and some of you maybe as well is the reason we became coders is because we were lonely not because we made a lot of money so I was 11 this is before the internet was a thing and we had these things called BBS's and you would call up someone else's computer in your town and you would hang out with people and chat with them and play role-playing games with them it didn't have to be your town but if it wasn't your mom would yell at you for a long distance fees and I got really excited about computers and coding because of the community that I found online okay so this is sometimes the most controversial part of this presentation I promised you that they dominate our lives in many ways even if you don't even if you don't even know a 9 to 14 year old girl even if you just see them on the street sometimes they are deciding what you and I do on a regular basis hear me out for a second here so who here knows who this guy is okay you don't have to raise your hands but I think most people know who this guy is right so this guy used to be this guy and then teenage girls were like I think this guy has some talent to him I think that he's got a future and now he's a huge celebrity today what about this guy just got his first Oscar you know just kind of starting out well this guy used to be this guy and I'm proud to tell you that I am one of the many girls that discovered him and decided this guy has a future all right raise your hand if you listen to Taylor Swift just kidding I won't make you do it but awesome that's great so Taylor Swift we listen to Taylor Swift because these girls discovered Taylor Swift it wasn't a 35 year old that was like this Taylor Swift is pretty neat no one cares what we think but even bigger than that these huge unicorns that all of us some of us work for some of us wish we invented these were discovered by young teenage girls no one is checking to see what apps were using they're finding new communities in these thin in these platforms and saying this is how I want to commune with my friends things like Instagram snapchat and musically all start with this demographic and then we get our cues from them if you don't know what musically is I promise you ask your nearest 9 to 14 year old friend if you don't do that you'll hear about it in a few years but this demographic their futures are all at risk everyone here knows how much the field of software development is growing and how important technical literacy is to the future of our youth however just 18% of computer science graduates are girls just 19% of AP computer science test takers and just 15% of Google's tech force identify as female so we decided to do something about that we were inspired by platforms like MySpace and Geocities things like Neopets and minecraft all places where kids find something they love and they're like okay to make this better all I have to do is learn how to code I can totally do that and so we wanted to do that so we talked to 200 girls we went to schools we sat down with them and we were like what makes you tick what are you excited about and what we heard from them over and over again is their friends their friends and their community are pivotal to them and this time in their lives so when we started talking to them about a smart friendship bracelet that's when they started really freaking out so we built Jewel BOTS and Jewel BOTS has an active online community where girls can work together share code that they've built and learn from each other help each other troubleshoot sometimes the way they work is when you are near your friends your bracelets light up the same color and you can use them to send secret messages to each other and you can also code them so you can say things like when all my swimming friends are together in the same room all of our bracelets should go rainbow colors which is really fun you can even build games jewel BOTS started shipping about a year and a half ago about after a lot of work and we are about to ship our 12,000 jewel bot we're in 38 city sorry 38 countries and we're just getting started okay so now it's time for the magic and I have an important question does anyone here want to be my friend pick me all right someone today Gary oh I don't have many friends that's awesome I'm so glad that we'll be friends okay it's awesome so we just need to pair our jewel BA okay okay and in order to do that we're gonna hold the magic button in the middle down for two seconds so one locomotive two locomotive great and then we got a white flashing I'm gonna do yours again I did it wrong locomotive two locomotive it's we're adults we can't do it okay it's a good that are smart alright so now we get to pick our friendship color I'm gonna pick red hat red does that work for you sure okay great so now I just picked a red hat red and my jewel bot is saying alright Tim's jewel bot do you want to be my friend and imageable about it's like I'm thinking about it I think so okay now we're ready okay great so now we're red friends when we're together our bracelets are going to be red and I will send you a secret message when it's time for you to come out and trip and introduce the next guest awesome well thank you so much thank you tailor gun so glad we could be friends and if only people would start following me on Twitter it'd be a great day awesome alright so now you can see the not so technical part of jewel box they use bluetooth to sense when your friends are nearby so they would work in about a 30 meter hundred foot range but to tell you about the actual technology part I'm going to introduce is someone much more qualified than I am so Ellie is one of our jewel box ambassadors she's come on out Ellie [Applause] hello my name is le gallais I'm gonna show you how I got coding and then show you some coding in action I first started coding at a6 when my dad helped me code a game soon after I program form a code for Minecraft then my dad had shown me jo bot I keep coding because it helps people for instance for instance you could code auto crack to make it a lot smarter so it can help make people stay run faster but what about something more serious what if you could help answer 911 calls and give alerts before we start I have three main steps to share with you I often use these steps to encoding my jaw bot and continue to use some of these now step one read the instructions and in other words this means for Jabba to memorize the colors and positions a way to memorize these because it's tricky is to remember all the colors and positions you O type will be capital and remember that the positions are either short for north west south west north east and south east step to learn the basic codes when it comes to coding you need to work your way up step 3 discover feel free to discover once you mastered everything now let's get to coding let's use or let's first use combining lights so under void loop I'm going to put LED turn on single s/w and blue and before we make sure that this works we got to put LED LED okay now let's type this again LED dot turn on single now let's do SW green now we have our first sketch so let's explain what this means led LED is a function that to control the LED lights LED turn on single SW blue tells that SW light to turn blue and green flashes so quickly with the blue it creates aqua now let's do another code lets you i'm going to use a more advanced command to make a custom color using RGB let's use a soft pink using 255 105 and 180 now let's type this in the button press function so let's do LED led LED dot set light and now we can do let's do position 3 255 105 and 180 now let's explain what this means the first one stands for the position the three others stand for red green and blue our GPS can only go up to 255 but there are 256 levels but if you count the first one as zero then get 255 so let's first before we move on let's show how this works so this is it before and now let's turn it on to see how our aqua turned out now let's see how our RGB light turned out so we are looking for a soft pink so let's see how it looks think about how much the code you write can help people all around the world these are ideas are just the beginning of opening a new world in technology a fresh start is right afternoon red hat summit 2018 i'm femi holiday combs founder of hacker femme Oh I started coding when I was 8 when I was 9 I set up South London raspberry jam through crowdfunding to share my passion for coding with other young people who might not otherwise be exposed to tech since then I've run hundreds of coding and robot workshops across the UK and globally in 2017 I was awarded an inaugural legacy Diana award by their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Prince Harry my service and community we welcome young people who have autism or like me tract syndrome because coding linked me up to a wider community of like-minded people and I'm trying to do the same for those who might also benefit from this I also deliver workshops to corporate companies and public organizations whilst feeding back ideas and resources into my community work we like to cascade our knowledge and experience to other young coders so that they can benefit too we're learning new tech every day we're starting to use github to document and manage our coding projects we've no dread we're using the terminal and beginning to really appreciate Linux as we explore cybersecurity and blockchain it's been quite a journey from South London to the world-famous Tate Modern museum to Bangladesh to this my first trip to the States and soon to China where I hope to translate my microwave workshops into Mandarin on this journey I'm noticed it is increasingly important for young coders to have collaborative and community led initiatives and enterprise and career ready skills so my vision now is to run monthly meetups and in collaboration with business partners help a hundred young disadvantaged people to get jobs in the digital services in fact out of all the lessons I've learned from teaching young coders they all have one thing in common the power of open source and the importance of developing community and today I want to talk about three of those lessons the value of reaching out and collaborating the importance of partnering event price and the ability to self organize and persist which translated into English means having a can-do attitude getting stuff done when you reach out when you show curiosity you realize you're not alone in this diverse community no matter who you are and where you're from from coding with minecraft to meeting other young people with jams I found there are people like me doing things I like doing I get to connect with them that's where open-source comes to the fourth second the open source community is so vast then it crosses continents it's so immersed perspectives that it can take you to amazing places out of space even that's my code running on the International Space Station's Columbus module let's take a lesson and playing was an audio representation for the frequencies recorded in space my team developed Python code to measure and store frequency readings from the space station and that was down linked back to earth to my email box Thomas who's 10 developed an audio file using audacity and importing it back into Python how cool is that Trulli collaboration can take you places you never thought possible because that's how the community works when you throw a dilemma a problem a tip the open source community comes back with answers when you give the community gives back tenfold that's how open source expands but in that vast starscape how do you know what to focus on there are so many problems to solve where do I start your world enterprice enterprise software is very good at solving problems what's the big problem how about helping the next generation be ready for the future I want to do more for the young coding community so I'm developing entrepreneurial business links to get that done this is a way to promote pathways to deal with future business problems whether in FinTech healthcare or supply chains a meeting the skill shortage it is a case for emerging in it's a case for investing in emerging communities and young change enablers throwing a wider net equates to being fully inclusive with a good representation of diversity you know under the shadow of the iconic show back in London there are pockets of deprivation where young people can't even get a job in a supermarket many of them are interested in tech in some way so my goal for the next three years is to encourage young people to become an active part of the coding community with open source we have the keys to unlock the potential for future innovation and technological development with young coders we have the people who have to face these problems working on them now troubleshooting being creative connecting with each other finding a community discovering their strengths along the way for me after running workshops in the community for a number of years when I returned from introducing coding to young street kids in Bangladesh I realized I had skills and experience so I set up my business hacker Famicom my first monetized fehmi's coding boot camp at Rice London Barclays Bank it was a sellout and a few weeks later shows my second I haven't looked back since but it works the opposite way - all the money raised enable me to buy robots for my community events and I was able to cascade my end price knowledge across to other young coders - when you focus on business problems you get active enthusiastic support from enterprise and then you can take on anything the support is great and we have tons of ideas but what does it really take to execute on those ideas to get things done can-do attitudes what open source needs you've seen it all this week we're all explorers ideator z' thinkers and doers open source needs people who can make the ideas happen get out there and see them through like I did setting up Safford and raspberry jam as an inclusive space to collaborate and learn together and that that led to organizing the young coders conference this was about organizing our own two-day event for our partners in industry to show they value young people and wanted to invest in our growth it doesn't stop there oh nice now I'm setting up monthly coding meetups and looking at ways to help other young people to access job opportunities in end price and digital services the underlying ethos remains the same in all I do promoting young people with the desire to explore collaborative problem-solving when coding digital making and building enterprise you fled having the confidence to define our journey and pathways always being inclusive always encouraging innovation and creativity being doers does more than get projects done makes us a pioneering force in the community dreaming and doing is how we will make exponential leaps my generation is standing on the shoulders of giants you the open-source pioneers and the technology you will built so I'd love to hear about your experiences who brought you into the open-source community who taught you as we go to upscale our efforts we So, you were the first, and people are recognizing this, to really sort of call the boom in the data center. We certainly have seen it with cloud, and we saw a little bit with data and big data, and now digital transformation, but well over a year ago, you said, we have tailwinds, it just feels right, so good call. >> Yeah, hey thank you, and you know clearly like the IDCs, Gartners, you know, they began last year, 2% to 3% growth, I said no, I think it's at least 2x that, and we ended of the year almost 6% growth in IT, and everybody's raised their forecast, and I think they're still a little bit conservative, and I think in this period, where technology is becoming more pervasive in everything, every business is becoming a tech business, every area of every business is becoming influenced by tech, and as a result, hey I think we're going to see a long run of tech strength and every company in tech is going to benefit and those that are well-positioned are going to benefit in a big way. >> Yeah, you see, you called it, "tech is breaking out of tech" >> Yep, yep absolutely, right, you know, we're no longer that little IT thing stuck in the back corner making sure your mail runs, it's now everything. You know, back office has become front office, right. You know, every aspect of data becomes mission-critical for the business. As some have called it, you know, data is the new oil, right, in the future. And it really is thrilling to see some of our customers, and Michael had a few on stage this morning doing really pretty cool things. >> Well VMware is on fire. I mean, it's only 10% of Dell's revenue, but it's half, it generates half of its operating cash flow. Obviously we love the software business, of course. Talk about your business, the core is doing really well, you got NSX crankin', vSAN cranking, the cloud now, there's Clarity in cloud, give us the overview of your business and give us the update. >> Sure, and as I say, you know, there's three reasons we're doing well. You know, one is our strategy is resonating with customers, and you know, when you got strategic resonance with customers, you're not in the purchasing department, you're in the business units, the CIO's office. So strategy is resonating well, across what we do for private cloud, what we're doing for public cloud, what we're doing for end user and workforce transformation, our security strategy, every aspect is resonating. You know, second, we're executing well. And I'll say, you know, your good strategy, you're executing it well, and you know, clearly the Dell momentum has helped us. We're ahead of schedules on the synergies that we've laid out, and that's been a powerful accelerant. It was like we're doing well, you know, and you put some turbochargers on, whoa, you know this is going, and then finally as we said, it's a good market, right. And well-positioned tech companies are benefiting from that. So across our product families, you know, NSX, vSAN, and HCI, you know, our cloud management is really performing, the end user computing, you know, all of these seeing, you know 30, 50, 100 percent growth rates. You know, my overall cloud business, you know, VMware is growing in the teens you know, my cloud business is growing in the 30s, and way ahead of the growth rate of the business, so pretty much everything that we've laid out is firing on all cylinders. >> Pat, I think most people understand some of the products of VMware. I think it's, you know, 20 years now, since server virtualization laws You've, you know great momentum with NSX with vSAN, wonder if you could talk a little bit about the digital platform though, you know how does VMware look, you know, for the next five to 10 years, fit into the Vision 2030 like Michael was talking about. >> Yeah, yeah, you know very much, you know, as I say, you know, our objective is to be the essential, ubiquitous, digital infrastructure, right. Where you know, this idea, you know, essential. You know we run this mission critical stuff and increasingly we're seeing businesses put their crown jewels running on VMware. You know, 'cause we ran a lot of the stuff of the past, we'd run your SharePoints, your Outlooks, and so on, but now, they're putting core banking on us, you know, core transactional platform. They just say, you are essential, ubiquitous, our strategy is to move all the way to the edge, and the IOT use cases, into the core networks of our service provider partners, You know, to as I say, build these four clouds, the private cloud, the public cloud, the telco cloud, and the NF or the IOT cloud. All of those on a common infrastructure, that enables applications to build on and leverage all of the above. So you know, we're increasingly ubiquitous, digital infrastructure, meaning that they can build their applications from the past as well as in the future on us. And as we're partnering with Pivotal with our PKS strategy, reaching more to the developer, right, and delivering that infrastructure for the next-generation apps, and of course the dirty secret is, is that almost all of the cool new apps are some ugly combination of new and old. And if we can give a common operational security management and automation environment that transcends their cool new container, and function as a service, but combine it, in a consistent operational and security environment with today's infrastructure, oh, that's like the big easy button for IT. Got it, we could take you to the future, without giving up the past. >> We hear from our, you know, CXOs, in our community, in our audience, they really, they want to get digital right. So my question to you is, what kind of conversations are you having with executives around getting digital right? >> Uh-huh, yeah, and lots of those things are, you know, like just with a big media company, was with a huge Bank, on the phone with a big consumer goods product last week. You know these interactions occurring, you know like you say they want to get it right. And with it we're seeing the conversation shift, because a lot of it used to be, you know best of breed. Oh that looks good, and I'll stitch it together with this, and maybe I'll put it that, and a lot of their bandwidth was being put to putting the pieces together, and we're saying no, right. What you going to do is have robust infrastructure. Increasingly rely on fewer, more strategic vendors. It's my job to put it together, so you can take your investments and put them into the applications and services that really differentiate your business. And this is becoming a sea change in how we work with customers and say, okay, yeah I can't stitch all these pieces together, I can't have a hundred security vendors, I must rely on fewer vendors, in much more strategic ways. And in that, obviously we're benefiting from that enormously and they're expecting us to step up like never before, to be a partner with them, and it really is a thrilling time for us. >> So that simplifies all the complexity on there, and at least in concept. Who's leading this charge? Do you discern any patterns of the guys that are getting it right, versus the guys that are maybe struggling, or maybe complacent, specifically in terms of leadership? >> Yeah, and it's super, super interesting, because I find leaders in every industry, right? You know, you find leaders and laggards in those, I had one customer not a lot, long say, "Hey is that virtualization stuff, can I really rely on it?" It's like, ding dong, you know, you're now the trailing edge of technology, but for every one of those trailers, we're seeing those front end customers, and you saw some of them on stage this morning. Where they're just really going and saying, boy we are now ready to ante in, in a big way. We're seeing that in car companies. We're seeing that in financial services companies. We're seeing that in supply chain companies. And some of those are now really seeing these startups now putting pressure on their business for the first time, and they say no, we got to innovate in a very aggressive way. And for that, you know, the Dell Technologies family, you know all of us coming together, you know with our, each skills and focus areas, but together being able to present that holistic solution that says, that's right, we can lead you on digital transformation, we could change your infrastructure, we can build-in security, we could transform your workplace, we could take you to the multi-cloud future, we got it. >> Pat, there was one of the things that caught my ear, Allison Dew, when she was talking about the Dell Technology Institute, said that, together you're going to become a force for good. I know that's something that's near and dear to your heart, >> Pat: Yeah. >> So, maybe, you talked about the tech, and the security and everything, what about the Dell families as a force for good out there? >> Yeah, and I've described this era, and I've said there's four superpowers. You know, technology superpowers that are bigger than any of us, right. And the four I described, you know, mobile. The ability to reach anyone, over half the planet is now connected. Cloud, the ability to scale as never before. AI, the ability to bring intelligence to everything, and IOT, the ability to bridge to the physical world everywhere. And those four are really reinforcing each other, right? They're accelerating each other, as Michael said, you know, "Today, the fastest day of your life. "Today, the slowest day of the rest of your life, "for tech evolution." And we see them just causing and accelerating each to go, as I mentioned in my talk this week at the Grow Awards in Silicon Valley, in 1986 I was making the 486, a great AI chip, right. It's like, what? 31 years ago? And now it's a success because the superpowers are coming together. The compute is now big enough, the data is now volumous enough, that we can do things never possible before. But with that, technology is neutral. The Gutenberg printing press did the Bible, you know, Luther's Bible, it also prints Playboy. It sort of doesn't care. Technology is neutral. And it's our job as a tech industry to shape technology for good. You know that's our obligation, and increasingly we need to be involved in, and shaping, legislations, policies, laws, to enable tech to be that force for good. >> Pat, you mentioned kind of the speed of change in the industry. You're a public company with you know, a lot of employees, how does, internally, how do you keep up with the pace of change, keep inspiring people, get them working on the next thing? You know, Michael talked about going private was one of the things that would help him restructure and get ready for that, so maybe discuss that dynamic. >> Well, you know and for us, you know, as a software company living in Silicon Valley, we feel it every day, right. I'll tell ya' you know, we see these startups, that are hovering around our people, and our buildings, and they got ideas, you know, so we're synthesizing those ideas. We have our own research effort, our advanced product efforts, we're engaging, you know, and thousands of customer interactions per day. And ultimately, it's my job to create a culture that enables my 8,000 software engineers to go for it every single day, right. Where they are just, you know, they love what we do as a company, they love who we are as a company, our values. And then find ways that we enable our teams to, what I say, innovate in everything. Not just in R and D, but how we sell our products, how we support our customers, you know, how we enable these new use cases. We have to innovate in everything, if we're going to keep pace with this industry, and to some degree, I think it's almost in the water in Silicon Valley, right. You know yeah, you got some crazy master's student coming out of Stanford, and he thinks he's going to start up a company to displace me. It's like, what are you talking about? But we feel that every day, and as we bring those people into our environment, creating that culture that allows everybody to innovate in everything, >> So it's hard to argue that things aren't getting faster, that speed, but speed is an interesting question. When you think about blockchains, and AI, and natural language processing, just digital in general, there's a lot of complexity in terms of adopting those things. So speed versus adoption. What do you see in terms of adoption? >> Yeah, you know in a lot of these things like, you know, you look at a technology like NSX, cool, breakthrough, you know we're five years old now, almost on NSX, right? Since we did the Nicira acquisition as a starting point, 4 1/2 years on NSX, and some of these things need to be sedimented, as I describe it, into the infrastructure. Hardened, you know when you've really proven all of the edge cases. You know, those things don't move every day. >> Dave: Right right, fossilized, Furrier word, >> Yeah, you know there is, you know similarly with vSAN. Boy, these edge use cases, data recovery, pounding on the periphery of failure cases, disk drives, failure modes on flash drives, some of those things need to be sedimented, but as you think about those layers, always it's you know, how do you sediment? How do you standardize? And then expose them as APIs and services to the next layer. And every layer as you go up the stack gets faster and faster right, so as somebody would consume the software-defined data center, they need to be able to do that pretty fast. You know, how can I make, you know VM, we just released 6.7. Which reduced by an order of magnitude the time to launch a VM. You know, increase the, by 20x the amount of V-Center bandwidth, just so I can go faster. Not that I needed to go faster for VMs, I needed to go faster that I can put containers in VMs, and they need much higher speed of operation. So to me, it's this constant standardization, sedimenting, integrating, and then building more and more agile surfaces, as you go higher in the stack, that allows people to build applications where literally they're pushing updates, and seeing their CICD pipeline allow new code releases every day. I'm not changing NSX every day, but I am changing my container environment for that new app literally every day, and the whole stack needs to support that. >> Cloud partnerships, we talked last year at Vmworld, about the clarity that the AWS deal brought, of course you have an arrangement with IBM, you're doing stuff with Kubernetes, so, just talk about your posture with the big cloud players, and how that has affected your business, and where you see it going. >> Yeah, you know, clearly the cloud strategy, the AWS partnership, as I said, more than anything else, when we announced that, people moved their views of VMware. Oh, I get it, VMware isn't part of my private cloud, or part of my past, they're the bridge to the future. And that has been sort of a game-changing perspective where we can truly enable this hybrid cloud experience. Where I could take you and take your existing data centers, I can move them into a range of public cloud partners, AWS, IBM, you know, and be able to operate seamlessly in a truly hybrid way. Oh your data center's getting a little hot, let's move a few workloads out. Oh, it's getting a little bit cool, let's move some workloads back. We can truly do that now, in a seamless, hybrid multi-cloud way, and customers, as they see that, it's not only the most cost-efficient, right, it also allows them to deal with unique business requirements, geo-requirements that they might have, oh, in Europe I have to be on a GDPR cloud in Germany. Okay, we support, we have a right, you know here's our portfolio. Other cases, it's like, oh, I really want to do take advantage of those proprietary services that some of the cloud vendors are doing, you know. You know, maybe in fact that new AI service is something that I could differentiate my business on, but the bulk of my workload, I want to have it on this hybrid platform that truly does give them more freedom and choice over time, while still meeting unique compliance, legal, security, issues, as they've come to know and love from VMware over time. >> So to clarify, is it, are you seeing it as use-case-specific, or is it people wanting to bring that cloud experience on-prem, or is it both? >> It is truly both, because what you've seen, is many people, and if we were talking four years ago, you would've been asking me questions, "oh, you know I just talked to Fred, "and he says everything is going to the cloud" right. And people tried that student body right to the cloud of their existing apps, and it was like, oh crap, right? You know, it's hard to re-platform, to refactor those applications, and when I got there, I got the same app, right. You know, it's like, wow that was a lot of investment to not get much return, right. Now, they look at it and they say, "Oh boy, you know, "I can build some new apps in cool new ways" right, with these cloud native services. I can now have this agile private hybrid cloud environment, and I truly can operationalize across that in a flexible way. And sometimes we have customers that are bringing workloads out of native cloud, and saying, oh that's become too big in my operation role. You know I have different governance requirements. I'm going to bring that one back. Other cases are saying, "Oh, I didn't want to move it to the VMware cloud on Amazon", or you know, IBM, the migration service is really powerful. I want to get out of the data center. Other cases, they look at their cost of capital, and the size and scale they're operating, and says, "Hey, I'm going to keep 80% on-premise forever, "but I never want to be locked in, "that I can't take advantage of that, "should there be a new service." It really is all of the above. And VMware, and our Dell relationship, and our key cloud partners, now 4,100 cloud partners strong, it's really stepping into that, in a pretty unique and powerful way. >> And the key is that operational impact, as Pat is saying. >> So Pat, just one of the challenges we've heard from users we talked to is, if this was supposed to get simpler, virtualizing it, you know, I kept all my old applications. Going the cloud, there's more SKUs of compute in the public cloud than there are, if I was to buy from Dell.com. You know, in management, you know we're making steps, but you know it's heterogeneous, it's always add, nothing ever dies, how do we help customers through this? >> Yeah, and I do think they're, you know we're definitely hearing that from customers. And they're looking to us to make these things simpler. And I think we've now, you know, laid the templates for a truly simpler world. Right, in the security domain, intrinsic security. Build many of the base security capabilities into the platform. Automation, automate across these multiple cloud environments, so you don't care about it, we're taking care of it against your policies. Being able to do that, you know, and have an increasingly autonomous infrastructure that truly is responding and operationalizing those environments, without you having to put personnel and specific investments, right at that fundamental operations level, because it's too big, it's too fast, you can't respond at the pace the business requires. So I feel really good, we have some key innovations, you'll see us announcing. Now, we're going to talk at VMworld right? >> Dave: Oh absolutely. >> Okay, >> I will 100% be there, >> I have some cool announcements in this area, by VMworld as well, specifically, in some of these management automation, we see some of that applying, some new AIML techniques, to be able to help with some of those workload management and policy management areas. So, some really cool things going on to help these problems specifically. >> We've seen, oh we saw blog recently, about you guys working on some blockchain stuff. I know it's early days there, but it's exciting new technology. >> Yeah, and the blockchain stuff is what I'm really, really pretty excited about. We have some algorithmic breakthroughs that right now, you know, blockchain on a log scale basically scales at you know log or super log, right. Which meaning, it's problematic right. Is you get lots of nodes, right, you know the time to resolve those, gets to be exponentially expensive, to be able to resolve. We've come up with some algorithmic breakthroughs that drop that to near linear. And when people look at that, they sort of say, wow, I can make my blockchain environments much larger, much more distributed as a result, so as a result of some of that work we'll be increasingly making blockchain as a primitive. We're not trying to deal with the application level, you know for insurance, for financial, but we can increasingly deliver a primitive infrastructure along with vSphere in the VMware environment, that says yeah, we've taken care of that base issue. We've guaranteed it from a vendor you trusted, and you might remember there was a couple of breaches, of some of the blockchain implementations, so yeah, we hope to take care of some of those hard problems for customers and bring some, a good breakthrough engineering, from VMware to that problem. >> Well, it's great to see companies like VMware and you know enterprise plays, IBM obviously involved, into bringing some credibility to that space, which everybody says "Crypto, oh", they don't walk they run, but there's real potential in the technology. I want to ask you about a Silicon Valley question. >> Pat: Okay. >> Any chance I get, so if I broadly define Silicon Valley, Let's include, you know, Seattle. And we generally don't do that, but that's okay, but I'm going to. >> We'll take this, we'll take 'em in okay. >> it's technology industry, but technology industry seems to have this dual disruption agenda. We've always sort of seen, tech companies own this horizontal stack, you know, and go attack, and cloud, and big data, and disruption, but it seems like, with digital, you're seeing them attack new industries. Whether it's healthcare, or groceries, or media. What do you make of that? Can Silicon Valley, broadly defined, pull off this dual disruption agenda? >> You know I really believe it can, right. In that, I'm, you know, being part of it. I'm a huge optimist on it. I don't think it will be exclusive to Silicon Valley, right. You know, there's a tech community in Boston, that's a bit more focused on healthcare, right. Obviously, the cloud guys coming out of Seattle. You know, Austin, and you know, Texas has increasing, Research Triangle, when you go around the world, you see more places because, you know, in that sense, one of my favorite, you know, cartoons, is a picture of a dog at a terminal. I'm sure it was a Dell terminal, but you know, and the caption reads right, "On the internet, "they don't know you're a dog." Right, you know the point being, hey, when you're on the net, it doesn't matter where you are, right. And it enables innovation, whether that's Afghanistan, whether that's Bangladesh, whether that's Myanmar, you know any of those places, become equal on the net, and it does open up that domain of innovation. So I view it much more as tech is disrupting everything. And that's my theme of, "tech is breaking out of tech". Clearly the hub of that, is Silicon Valley. Right you know, that's the center where you know, every third door is a new startup, as you walk down the street. It really is an incredible experience. But increasingly, you know, that innovative disruptive spirit is breaking out of Silicon Valley, to you know, literally across the world. The Chinese think they might be the number one. You know, Europeans, oh sort of a renaissance in France, you know that we haven't seen for many years, and so on. And I do believe that it will continue to be technology, in this horizontal way you know, but increasingly, and I think you know, Amazon has led the way on this. We're seeing boy, we can disrupt entire industries you know, leveraging that. You know, Tesla in automotive, and Airbnbs. All of these are changing industries in fundamental ways, and I do not see that slowing down at all. You know, I'm thrilled to see like, you know, health care, right. Boy, I have not seen this amount of disruptive technology startups in healthcare, healthcare one of the lowest percentage of spend on IT. Can you imagine that? Right, you know at that level, and boy, we're starting to see that pick up. So industry by industry I think we're just getting started. >> And that's an industry that is really ripe for disruption. >> Pat: Oh my gosh. >> So Pat, we're going to hear about some of this, this afternoon at your keynote, I presume? Maybe show us a little leg there, and we'll wrap. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Dave: Alright, take it home. >> Hey, you know we're, today's keynote, obviously going to talk about the better together aspects, we'll update on vSAN and HCI and our strategy there, some of the cool things we're doing with Dell, and AirWatch Workspace ONE, and the client space. Yeah, we're going to talk about networking. I'm going to lay out our networking strategy, and we're going to give a teaser this afternoon of a broad set of networking announcements that we're doing this week. And hope to really lay out, what we think of, as the virtual cloud network of the future, and how the network is essential to that future. So, we're going to have a little bit of fun there, and you'll see me don the VR headset, right, and hey we're going to go into the virtual, virtual data center today, >> Virtualization inception. >> There we go. >> Well Pat, on a personal note, you've been a great friend of theCUBE, and we really appreciate that, and you've been an awesome guest, we saw you come from Intel with an amazing career, and we just see it going from there. This is theCUBE, the leader in live tech coverage. My name is Dave Vellante. I'm here with my co-host Peter Burris. And many-time Cube guest Xavier Poisson is back. He's the vice president of Cloud28+ and service providers worldwide for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. And he's joined by Eugene Viskovic, who is the chief business officer at Veon, a Cloud28+ partner. Gentlemen, welcome to theCUBE. Welcome back, Xavier, it's good to see you again. >> Thank you, hi. >> Hi. So give us the update on Cloud 28. It started out as sort of this focused European effort. It has exploded now globally. What's the update? >> So I don't remember, I don't know if you remember it. It was last year, the same event. We were in London, I believe. And we were saying, "Okay, we are 300. "How many will be next year?" I took that back. It will be 700. We are 700. >> Dave: Wow, congratulations. >> 700 members. We have been expanding in the different geographies. So also in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, but we expanded in North America, in A-Pac, Latin America, and Caribbean. So now we are present in 60 countries. We are proposing 24,000 cloud services, so the catalog has been expanding dramatically. We are offering capabilities, data center capabilities from all partners in 33 countries. And we can offer from 400 data centers already. So average we have 40,000 hits per month on the platform, acquiring members and so on. And, yes, it has been a delight to launch that everywhere. It's really taking off very, very quickly. >> And the basic value proposition, you are essentially enabling cloud partners to create cloud-like business capabilities. >> Yeah, so what we do is, first of all, we enable the partners to get known on the market on this side, to publish all their services built and consume also. So it's not only IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, but also integration services as well because it's a comprehensive value chain. Then, what we do, we're not a marketplace where people go and leave. In the center, they can speak everyday. So they publish articles, full leadership articles around security, big data, manufacturing, and so on and so on. This year, only this year, they have published 600 articles. So when you're a customer, you go to this platform. You can see the offering, but you can see how the vendor is positioning himself around the market, his value-add, and what they are doing. So digital marketing a lot, also for them. We have been increasing the value on the market of many of our partners with social media because we are very good activity in this area, and also lead-generation engine because now we have so much offerings that we can target specific campaigns for our partners in specific geographies and generate a lot of leads on the market. Last, but not least, the market is evolving. We have a lot of partners, so we create platform-connected offerings. Example we have done is a specific cloud-in-a-box for manufacturing for plants where, in six clicks, you can provision from Cloud28+ all your information system for a plant. So this is also the kind of things that we do. >> Great, okay, Eugene, tell us about Veon. Why are you in business? What's your story? >> Okay, yes. Just talk a few minutes about Veon because it's not a very well-known name around the world, and don't be ashamed if you don't know Veon because it still is the seventh largest mobile operator in the world. It's significant. We are, today, around 42,000 employees, over 12 different countries. I have to say, very unusual countries. Not the type of countries you may choose to go for holidays, but it would be a shame because, honestly, some of them are good like, you know, all Eurasia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Russia. We have also emerging market, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Algeria, and one, only one European market, which is Italy with WIND, WIND Three. Which means it's a very large region. We are dealing with 10, more than 10% of the total population of the globe, 235 million customers, which is significant. And within this organization, there is an enterprise division, which I'm leading, which is around 4,500 people dedicated for enterprise and wholesales. Full revenue around $3 billion, just to give you a scale on who we are. Again, not very well-known, but definitely within our footprint we are the number one in this particular region of the world. >> It's sizable, substantial business. >> Eugene: Exactly, yes. >> So what's driving your business today? Obviously mobile is exploding. >> Yes, it's clear we came from the mobile business. We are number one mobile operator in the majority of these countries. We are what we call some fixed business. And since the last two, three years when I joined the organization, we completely reorganized our business model and moving more into the what we call value added services, ICT services. And one of the components, definitely, was to try to find a partner for our cloud proposition. You need to understand that we're in a very emerging market for this type of subject. We are sitting in a very traditional way, you know, how enterprise operating. They own the infrastructure, they own data center, they own the servers, the management platform, and their own people. And they have not yet shifted to this new model, which is to try to outsource some of the infrastructure. And this is where we came into the game as a global provider in order to have enterprise really to operate the shift. There is also another interesting situation is every time we bid a cloud proposition, usually we try to centerize it and have different country. In our part of the world is not possible. We have to set up a cloud platform in every single of our countries for regulatory constraints, which is not very economical, but definitely it's an opportunity for us to lead this market especially with HP Enterprise. >> Well, it allows you to differentiate, as well, from some of the mega-cloud providers that everybody knows, everybody talks about. So is that a primary way in which you compete? >> Oh, completely. It's clear the big players today are not very well-implemented in this part of the world because of this particular constraint, outside of Italy which is a little bit different game. But it's clear in Russia and Eurasia, yes. Today there is a opportunity. We believe that we want to be the single provider within this region operating across different market segments because we're covering from SO up to multinational accounts, even government. And having a set of value propositions we can offer across every single of our countries. >> Xavier, is it common that, amongst the Cloud28+ partners, there's that theme of local presence, of course, but is there also a differential in terms of what the partners will do, the types of work they'll do, customizations? >> Yeah, typically the case of Veon is very specific because they address very specific markets. Some other players will ask different things. But what is very important in the case of Veon is, first of all, to have a ready-to-deploy solution that you can industrialize in different countries. So this is the reason why we played with one of the technology partners of Cloud28+, with Ormuco, who has a cloud-in-a-box solution that can be deployed and managed remotely if needed. But that was fitting the needs of the market. Then, what we need to do is really to engage locally. So, in this particular case, what we're going to do is to engage with the HP organization in order that when we have the needs for our customers to go for cloud computing kind of workloads, we say, "Okay, we have the solution. "We have a partner, a Cloud28+ partner, "who took the decision to go with us, "and we trust each other. "So you, Mr. Customer, you want to do "backup as a service, disaster recovery "as a service, compute, storage as a service, "or security as a service, Veon is there." And the good point is Veon is there on very qualified hardware of HP synergy with a very good solution, which is one of the solution ready for service providers of HPE and operated by a very serious tech operator with the number six on the market, this is Veon. And we go together. So in this particular case, what was interesting was to have a solution that can be deployed everywhere the same with workloads that may fit with the different expectations of the market, engage the HP people to play with and, then, we market and with Cloud28+ we'll amplify their message. We will be able to drive lead generation campaigns. We'll be able to onboard our resellers because one thing I believe is that in this kind of regions, people don't go, as you say, Eugene, directly to the cloud. They continue to go to their resellers and, "What do I need to do?" And here, you know that we have the largest reseller network in the industry. So we will introduce this solution to our resellers in order that when a reseller of HPE is in front of such a case, it can have the mind to say, "Okay, let's engage with Veon." So this is the way we are going to operate. >> So when I think of many of the Akistan countries, I think of natural resources, challenging topography, challenging terrain. How does the physical reality and the industries that typify that region impact the way you're providing cloud services? >> It's clear, we're talking sometime a very, very large geography in terms of country size. When you take only in Russia. >> Mountainous. >> Eleven time zones you have in one single country. And when we operate, yes we have to spread our capability in order to be able to touch every single country, including in some infrastructure. Especially as a carrier, I like to imagine how much we need to pull fiber, cable, across the country and have these different set up of infrastructure, cloud propositions, to make sure we can serve better in term latency especially when we're talking about financial sections and so on, which brings some level of complexity and, as I said earlier, also some level of efficiency in term investment because we are not in a perfect world, especially when we talk about the regulatory constraints, which, yes, we need to find some middle way. How we can have a better, being still competitive, but as sometimes still delivering the expected quality. But you are right. This particular part of the world require a lot of work in term of physical infrastructure and also in our team. Our people are spread across these different countries, and for that reason yes, it's not an easy situation. >> Does it drive, are you likely to see a higher demand? HPE talks about the intelligent edge. Are you likely to see a higher demand for things like the intelligent edge because of the nature of the natural resource industry's petrochemical, et cetera, mountainous regions and a lot of communities that you serve, is that going to be a driver of new services or is it going to be something else? What do you think? >> Well, I think there would be two aspects. The first one, there is, definitely, a requirement driven, very often, by very large, multinational corporations. You'll be surprised how this multinational corporations are covering this part of the world. You have natural resources. All the western industry is present. And because they are present, they need to bring their standard in term of infrastructure they are using within this particular country. That the reason, yes, the demand is coming from there. At the same time, you have the rest of the market in term of large, local businesses where it's clear. They are moving. If you're looking in our part of the world, we are exactly where we were 10 years ago in Europe, in North America, and in Asia. We are really into emerging in face, in adopting this type of infrastructure. It's clear it's going to go much more quicker because, on top of that, enterprises have big pressure to reduce costs, but at the same time not to sacrifice the quality, what they're looking. Which, again, together we're capable and we can demonstrate they can get better for less. And this is a big work, and that's the reason when Xavier was mentioning about working together in each of the countries, this was one of the critical element in choosing with HP Enterprise because I'm a mobile operator and fixed. I'm not yet organized as an ICT services or cloud. It was very important for me, if we wanted to go very quickly to associate a brand with a leading organization like HP. And I have to say, I have tested several times. Every time we say, "Okay, we are in "partnership with HP Enterprise. "We are partnered with Cloud28+." This ring immediately the bell of the enterprise we are meeting, and it's easier for us to move quicker. But, definitely, I think we have a big, big opportunity. Large market to address, but definitely something interesting to go after. >> And it's early days, it's only been two years now, what do you want from Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and what are you guys going to deliver? Let's talk road map a little bit. First, from the partner/customer. What are you driving HPE and Xavier to deliver? >> For me there would be three axes in term of development. The first one in term of value proposition. We want to be able, over the next 12, 18 months to be able to offer to the market a full set of propositions, as you mentioned earlier. But Xavier, in term of public, private, hybrid cloud, and moving to different solution, we're talking about security. And, also, we're moving into more vertical market approach. We're talking about IUT where will also be some direction. This is the first ax. The second one, it's in term of countries. We're not going to launch a platform in every single, as I said earlier. We need to do it country by country. We are starting with Russia, Ukraine, Pakistan will come behind, Algeria. Very quickly, over the next 12 months, we are going to launch one by one these different countries. And the last element for us, which is also very key, is market segment. We are organized, as I said, by market segment. SO, small-medium enterprise, large key account, multinational corporation, and government. And each of these segments have different requirements. And we need to customize our approach. This is where where working with HP and Ormuco, we want to have a very customized, bi-market segment from highly customized to off-the-shelf type proposition. But, for me, these would be the three key axes in term of development working with HP Enterprise. >> And Xavier, how does that align with your roadmap? >> Well, you know, it's fully alligned in the sense that, first of all, we are expanding a lot the value prop of Cloud28+ with ISV software vendors. And the problems of telcos and service providers moving to the cloud, that's correct there is ICT branding, and there we can help. But this is the content because one day or another, they will face what the others have been facing, even in these countries, meaning yes is not enough. So if you have a portfolio of applications, verticals, horizontal applications, that they can use to continue to satisfy the demand of the market, so it will be great for them, and we are investing a lot in this order. The other thing is today I believe that we have now reached a maturity on digital marketing with Cloud28+, which is impressive. We had a big event yesterday. I will not give to you the number of impression we had only in four hours. It has been massive. If we take that, we put this at the disposal of this partner in every single country, we will speed them on the market. So these are the two big elements. The third element is what I said about this platform connected solutions because the more we go, the more we see that our outside-in approach with Cloud28+, thinking customers first, is excellent. We need to continue on that. But, as you were mentioning, the move to the edge, we see more and more solutions for energy, for manufacturing, oil and gas, environment, that we need pure hybrid because you cannot put everything into a cloud. And where we are lucky with Veon is that they have the network. So you can imagine, they have their big cloud in a country that they could deploy also some private cloud very, very quickly in specific area within an oil and gas land or I don't know where in energy, mining, or where you have not that. And you cannot, because of latency issues you cannot go directly to the cloud, but you need to handle at the edge, send back to the cloud for analytics or AI or so on, and this will be at the disposal for them. And I believe the combination of the two for that will be for the benefit of the customer. So this is my opinion. >> I completely agree. I think they approach, in term of the partnership, as I said, I think when we're going to deal with very large organizations is going to be very infrastructure-type discussion driven. But when we're going to cool down, it's purely, definitely Sowasis, content. I want to be able to address, for example, the marketing department, how we can help them to understand the behavior of a consumer by using data, big data, you know, analytics. In term of delivery for an organization, using fleet management. In term of manufacturing, using more IUT. But when you look at these different solutions, what is below is a type of infrastructure. Is to have a cloud infrastructure where we can rely on a strong partnership, bringing this solution, and offering to our customer definitely a very cost-effective but also agile, very, you know, able to move with the market demand in a very vertical way, but definitely this is a way we want to work together. >> Excellent.
