Vishal Lall is here. He's the senior vice president and general manager for HP ES Green Lake Cloud Services Solutions. Michelle, good to see you again. >>Likewise. David, good to see you. It was about a year ago that we met here. Or maybe nine months >>ago. That's right. Uh, September of last year. A new role >>for you. Is that right? I was starting that new role when I last met you. Yeah, but it's been nine months. Three quarters? What have you learned so far? I mean, it's been quite a right, right? I mean, when I was starting off, I had, you know, about three priorities we've executed on on all of them. So, I mean, if you remember back then they we talked about, you know, improving a cloud experience. We talked about data and analytics being a focus area and then building on the marketplace. I think you heard a lot of that over the last couple of days here. Right? So we've enhanced our cloud experience. We added a private cloud, which was the big announcement yesterday or day before yesterday that Antonio made so that's been I mean, we've been testing that with customers. Great feedback so far. Right? And we're super excited about that. And, uh, you know, uh, down there, the test drive section people are testing that. So we're getting really, really good feedback. Really good acceptance from customers on the data and Analytics side. We you know, we launched the S three connector. We also had the analytics platform. And then we launched data fabric as a service a couple of days ago, right, which is kind of like back into that hybrid world. And then on the marketplace side, we've added a tonne of partners going deep with them about 80 plus partners now different SVS. So again, I think, uh, great. I think we've accomplished a lot over the last three quarters or so lot more to be done. Though >>the marketplace is really interesting to us because it's a hallmark of cloud. You've got to have a market price. Talk about how that's evolving and what your vision is for market. Yes, >>you're exactly right. I mean, having a broad marketplace provides a full for the platform, right? It's a chicken and egg. You need both. You need a good platform on which a good marketplace can set, but the vice versa as well. And what we're doing two things there, Right? One Is we expanding coverage of the marketplace. So we're adding more SVS into the marketplace. But at the same time, we're adding more capabilities into the marketplace. So, for example, we just demoed earlier today quickly deploy capabilities, right? So we have an I S p in the marketplace, they're tested. They are, uh, the work with the solution. But now you can you can collect to deploy directly on our infrastructure over time, the lad, commerce capabilities, licencing capabilities, etcetera. But again, we are super excited about that capability because I think it's important from a customer perspective. >>I want to ask you about that, because that's again the marketplace will be the ultimate arbiter of value creation, ecosystem and marketplace. Go hand in hand. What's your vision for what a successful ecosystem looks like? What's your expectation now that Green Lake is up and running. I stay up and running, but like we've been following the announcement, it just gets better. It's up to the right. So we're anticipating an ecosystem surge. Yeah. What are you expecting? And what's your vision for? How the ecosystem is going to develop out? Yeah. I >>mean, I've been meeting with a lot of our partners over the last couple of days, and you're right, right? I mean, I think of them in three or four buckets right there. I s V s and the I S P is coming to two forms right there. Bigger solutions, right? I think of being Nutanix, right, Home wall, big, bigger solutions. And then they are smaller software packages. I think Mom would think about open source, right? So again, one of them is targeted to developers, the other to the I t. Tops. But that's kind of one bucket, right? I s P s, uh, the second is around the channel partners who take this to market and they're asking us, Hey, this is fantastic. Help us understand how we can help you take this to market. And I think the other bucket system indicators right. I met with a few today and they're all excited about. They're like, Hey, we have some tooling. We have the manage services capabilities. How can we take your cloud? Because they build great practise around extent around. Sorry. Aws around? Uh, sure. So they're like, how can we build a similar practise around Green Lake? So again, those are the big buckets. I would say. Yeah, >>that's a great answer. Great commentary. I want to just follow up on that real quick. You don't mind? So a couple things we're seeing observing I want to get your reaction to is with a i machine learning. And the promise of that vertical specialisation is creating unique opportunities on with these platforms. And the other one is the rise of the managed service provider because expertise are hard to come by. You want kubernetes? Good luck finding talent. So managed services seem to be exploding. How does that fit into the buckets? Or is it all three buckets or you guys enable that? How do you see that coming? And then the vertical piece? >>A really good question. What we're doing is through our software, we're trying to abstract a lot of the complexity of take communities, right? So we are actually off. We have actually automated a whole bunch of communities functionality in our software, and then we provide managed services around it with very little. I would say human labour associated with it is is software manage? But at the same time we are. What we are trying to do is make sure that we enable that same functionality to our partners. So a lot of it is software automation, but then they can wrap their services around it, and that way we can scale the business right. So again, our first principle is automated as much as we can to software right abstract complexity and then as needed, uh, at the Manus Services. >>So you get some functionality for HP to have it and then encourage the ecosystem to fill it in or replicated >>or replicated, right? I mean, I don't think it's either or it should be both right. We can provide many services or we should have our our partners provide manage services. That's how we scale the business. We are the end of the day. We are product and product company, right, and it can manifest itself and services. That discussion was consumed, but it's still I p based. So >>let's quantify, you know, some of that momentum. I think the last time you call your over $800 million now in a are are you gotta You're growing at triple digits. Uh, you got a big backlog. Forget the exact number. Uh, give us a I >>mean, the momentum is fantastic Day. Right. So we have about $7 billion in total contract value, Right? Significant. We have 1600 customers now. Unique customers are running Green Lake. We have, um, your triple dip growth year over year. So the last quarter, we had 100% growth year over year. So again, fantastic momentum. I mean, the other couple, like one other metric I would like to talk about is the, um the stickiness factor associated tension in our retention, right? As renewal's is running in, like, high nineties, right? So if you think about it, that's a reflection of the value proposition of, like, >>that's that's kind of on a unit basis, if you will. That's the number >>on the revenue basis on >>revenue basis. Okay? >>And the 1600 customers. He's talking about the size and actually big numbers. Must be large companies that are. They're >>both right. So I'll give you some examples, right? So I mean, there are large companies. They come from different industries. Different geography is we're seeing, like, the momentum across every single geo, every single industry. I mean, just to take some examples. BMW, for example. Uh, I mean, they're running the entire electrical electric car fleet data collection on data fabric on Green Lake, right? Texas Children's Health on the on the healthcare side. Right On the public sector side, I was with with Carl Hunt yesterday. He's the CEO of County of Essex, New Jersey. So they are running the entire operations on Green Lake. So just if you look at it, Barclays the financial sector, right? I mean, they're running 100,000 workloads of three legs. So if you just look at the scale large companies, small companies, public sector in India, we have Steel Authority of India, which is the largest steel producer there. So, you know, we're seeing it across multiple industries. Multiple geography is great. Great uptake. >>Yeah. We were talking yesterday on our wrap up kind of dissecting through the news. I want to ask you the question that we were riffing on and see if we can get some clarity on it. If I'm a customer, CI or C so or buyer HP have been working with you or your team for for years. What's the value proposition? Finish this sentence. I work with HPV because blank because green like, brings new value proposition. What is that? Fill in that blank for >>me. So I mean, as we, uh, talked with us speaking with customers, customers are looking at alternatives at all times, right? Sometimes there's other providers on premises, sometimes as public cloud. And, uh, as we look at it, uh, I mean, we have value propositions across both. Right. So from a public cloud perspective, some of the challenges that our customers cr around latency around, uh, post predictability, right? That variability cost is really kind of like a challenge. It's around compliance, right? Uh, things of that nature is not open systems, right? I mean, sometimes, you know, they feel locked into a cloud provider, especially when they're using proprietary services. So those are some of the things that we have solved for them as compared to kind of like, you know, the other on premises vendors. I would say the marketplace that we spoke about earlier is huge differentiator. We have this huge marketplace. Now that's developing. Uh, we have high levels of automation that we have built, right, which is, uh, you know, which tells you about the TCO that we can drive for the customers. What? The other thing that is really cool that be introduced in the public in the private cloud is fungible itty across infrastructure. Right? So basically on the same infrastructure you can run. Um, virtual machines, containers, bare metals, any application he wants, you can decommission and commission the infrastructure on the fly. So what it does, is it no matter where it is? Uh, on premises, right? Yeah, earlier. I mean, if you think about it, the infrastructure was dedicated for a certain application. Now we're basically we have basically made it compose herbal, right? And that way, what? Really? Uh, that doesnt increases utilisation so you can get increased utilisation. High automation. What drives lower tco. So you've got a >>horizontal basically platform now that handle a variety of work and >>and these were close. Can sit anywhere to your point, right? I mean, we could have a four node workload out in a manufacturing setting multiple racks in a data centre, and it's all run by the same cloud prints, same software train. So it's really extensive. >>And you can call on the resources that you need for that particular workload. >>Exactly what you need them exactly. Right. >>Excellent. Give you the last word kind of takeaways from Discover. And where when we talk, when we sit down and talk next year, it's about where do you want to be? >>I mean, you know, I think, as you probably saw from discovered, this is, like, very different. Antonio did a live demo of our product, right? Uh, visual school, right? I mean, we haven't done that in a while, so I mean, you started. It >>didn't die like Bill Gates and demos. No, >>no, no, no. I think, uh, so I think you'll see more of that from us. I mean, I'm focused on three things, right? I'm focused on the cloud experience we spoke about. So what we are doing now is making sure that we increase the time for that, uh, make it very, you know, um, attractive to different industries to certifications like HIPAA, etcetera. So that's kind of one focus. So I just drive harder at that adoption of that of the private out, right across different industries and different customer segments. The second is more on the data and analytics I spoke about. You will have more and more analytic capabilities that you'll see, um, building upon data fabric as a service. And this is a marketplace. So that's like it's very specific is the three focus areas were driving hard. All right, we'll be watching >>number two. >>mhm. Okay, we're back. I'm John. Fully with the Cuban. We're going to go deeper into a deep dive into unified cloud networking solution from Pluribus and NVIDIA. And we'll examine some of the use cases with Alexandra Barberry, VP of product Management and Pluribus Networks. And Pete Lambasts, the director of technical market and video. Remotely guys, thanks for coming on. Appreciate it. >>I think >>so. Deep dive. Let's get into the what and how Alexandra, we heard earlier about the pluribus and video partnership in the solution you're working together on. What is it? >>Yeah. First, let's talk about the what? What are we really integrating with the NVIDIA Bluefield deep You Technology pluribus says, uh, has been shipping, uh, in volume in multiple mission critical networks. So this adviser, one network operating systems it runs today on merchant silicon switches and effectively, it's a standard based open network computing system for data centre. Um, and the novelty about this operating system is that it integrates a distributed the control plane for Atwater made effective in STN overlay. This automation is completely open and interoperable, and extensible to other type of clouds is nothing closed and this is actually what we're now porting to the NVIDIA GPU. >>Awesome. So how does it integrate into video hardware? And specifically, how is plural is integrating its software within video hardware? >>Yeah, I think we leverage some of the interesting properties of the blue field the GPU hardware, which allows actually to integrate, um, our soft our network operating system in a manner which is completely isolated and independent from the guest operating system. So the first byproduct of this approach is that whatever we do at the network level on the GPU card is completely agnostic to the hyper visor layer or OS layer running on on the host even more. Um, uh, we can also independently manage this network. Note this switch on a nick effectively, uh, managed completely independently from the host. You don't have to go through the network operating system running on X 86 to control this network node. So you truly have the experience effectively of a top of rack for virtual machine or a top of rack for kubernetes spots. Where instead of, uh, um, if you allow me with analogy instead of connecting a server nique directly to a switchboard now you're connecting a VM virtual interface to a virtual interface on the switch on a nick. And also as part of this integration, we, uh, put a lot of effort, a lot of emphasis in accelerating the entire day to play in for networking and security. So we are taking advantage of the DACA, uh, video DACA api to programme the accelerators and this your accomplished two things with that number one, you, uh, have much greater performance, much better performance than running the same network services on an X 86 CPU. And second, this gives you the ability to free up. I would say around 2025% of the server capacity to be devoted either to additional war close to run your cloud applications. Or perhaps you can actually shrink the power footprint and compute footprint of your data centre by 20% if you want to run. The same number of computer work was so great efficiencies in the overall approach. >>And this is completely independent of the server CPU, right? >>Absolutely. There is zero quote from pluribus running on the X 86 this is what why we think this enables a very clean demarcation between computer and network. >>So, Pete, I gotta get I gotta get you in here. We heard that the GPUS enable cleaner separation of devops and net ops. Can you explain why that's important? Because everybody's talking. Def SEC ops, right now you've got Net ops. Net net SEC ops, this separation. Why is this clean separation important? >>Yeah, I think it's, uh, you know, it's a pragmatic solution, in my opinion, Um, you know, we wish the world was all kind of rainbows and unicorns, but it's a little a little messier than that. And I think a lot of the devops stuff in that, uh, mentality and philosophy. There's a natural fit there, right? You have applications running on servers. So you're talking about developers with those applications integrating with the operators of those servers? Well, the network has always been this other thing, and the network operators have always had a very different approach to things than compute operators. And, you know, I think that we we in the networking industry have gotten closer together. But there's still a gap. There's still some distance, and I think in that distance isn't going to be closed and So again it comes down to pragmatism. And I think, you know, one of my favourite phrases is look, good fences make good neighbours. And that's what this is. Yeah, >>it's a great point because devops has become kind of the calling card for cloud. Right? But devops is a simply infrastructure as code infrastructure is networking, right? So if infrastructure as code, you know, you're talking about, you know, that part of the stack under the covers under the hood, if you will. This is super important distinction. And this is where the innovation is. Can you elaborate on how you see that? Because this is really where the action is right now. >>Yeah, exactly. And I think that's where one from from the policy, the security, the zero trust aspect of this right. If you get it wrong on that network side, all of a sudden, you you can totally open up that those capabilities and so security is part of that. But the other part is thinking about this at scale, right. So we're taking one top of rack switch and adding, you know, up to 48 servers per rack, and so that ability to automate orchestrate and manage its scale becomes absolutely critical. >>Alexandra, this is really the why we're talking about here. And this is scale and again getting it right. If you don't get it right, you're gonna be really kind of up. You know what you know. So this is a huge deal. Networking matters. Security matters. Automation matters. DEVOPS. Net ops all coming together. Clean separation. Help us understand how this joint solution within video gets into the pluribus unified cloud networking vision. Because this is what people are talking about and working on right now. >>Yeah, absolutely. So I think here with this solution, we're talking to major problems in cloud networking. One is the operation of cloud networking, and the second is distributing security services in the cloud infrastructure. First, let me talk about first. What are we really unifying? If you really find something, something must be at least fragmented or disjointed. And what is this? Joint is actually the network in the cloud. If you look holistically how networking is deployed in the cloud, you have your physical fabric infrastructure, right? Your switches and routers. You build your I P clause fabric leaf and spine to apologies. this is actually well understood the problem. I would say, um, there are multiple vendors with a similar technologies. Very well, standardised. Very well understood. Um, and almost a commodity, I would say building an I P fabric these days. But this is not the place where you deploy most of your services in the cloud, particularly from a security standpoint. Those services are actually now moved into the compute layer where you actually were called. Builders have to instrument a separate network virtualisation layer, where they deploy segmentation and security closer to the workloads. And this is where the complication arise. This high value part of the cloud network is where you have a plethora of options, that they don't talk to each other, and they are very dependent on the kind of hyper visor or compute solution you choose. Um, for example, the networking API between an SX I environment or and hyper V or a Zen are completely disjointed. You have multiple orchestration layers and when and then when you throw in Also kubernetes in this In this in this type of architecture, uh, you're introducing yet another level of networking, and when you burn it, it runs on top of the M s, which is a prevalent approach. You actually just stuck in multiple networks on the compute layer that they eventually run on the physical fabric infrastructure. Those are all ships in the night effectively, right? They operate as completely disjointed. And we're trying to attack this problem first with the notion of a unified fabric, which is independent from any work clothes. Uh, whether it's this fabric spans on a switch which can become connected to a bare metal workload or can spend all the way inside the deep You where you have your multi hypervisors computer environment. It's one a P I one common network control plane and one common set of segmentation services for the network. That's probably number one. >>You know, it's interesting you I hear you talking. I hear one network different operating models reminds me the old server list days. You know there's still servers, but they called server list. Is there going to be a term network list? Because at the end of the, it should be one network, not multiple operating models. This this is like a problem that you guys are working on. Is that right? I mean, I'm not I'm just joking. Server, Listen, network list. But the idea is it should be one thing. >>Yeah, it's effectively. What we're trying to do is we're trying to recompose this fragmentation in terms of network operations across physical networking and server networking. Server networking is where the majority of the problems are because of the as much as you have standardised the ways of building, uh, physical networks and cloud fabrics with high people articles on the Internet. And you don't have that kind of, uh, sort of, uh, operational efficiency at the server layer. And this is what we're trying to attack first with this technology. The second aspect we're trying to attack is how we distribute the security services throughout the infrastructure more efficiently. Whether it's micro segmentation is a state, full firewall services or even encryption, those are all capabilities enabled by the blue field deep you technology and, uh, we can actually integrate those capabilities directly into the network fabric. Limiting dramatically, at least for is to have traffic, the sprawl of security appliances with a virtual or physical that is typically the way people today segment and secured the traffic in the >>cloud. All kidding aside about network. Listen, Civil is kind of fun. Fun play on words There the network is one thing is basically distributed computing, right? So I love to get your thoughts about this Distributed security with zero trust as the driver for this architecture you guys are doing. Can you share in more detail the depth of why DPU based approach is better than alternatives? >>Yeah, I think. What's what's beautiful and kind of what the deep you brings that's new to this model is completely isolated. Compute environment inside. So you know, it's the yo dog. I heard you like a server, So I put a server inside your server. Uh, and so we provide, you know, arm CPUs, memory and network accelerators inside, and that is completely isolated from the host. So the server, the the actual X 86 host just thinks it has a regular nick in there. But you actually have this full control plane thing. It's just like taking your top of rack, switch and shovel. Get inside of your compute node. And so you have not only the separation, um, within the data plane, but you have this complete control plane separation. So you have this element that the network team can now control and manage. But we're taking all of the functions we used to do at the top of rack Switch, and we distribute them now. And, you know, as time has gone on, we've we've struggled to put more and more and more into that network edge. And the reality is the network edge is the compute layer, not the top of rack switch layer. And so that provides this phenomenal enforcement point for security and policy. And I think outside of today's solutions around virtual firewalls, um, the other option is centralised appliances. And even if you can get one that can scale large enough, the question is, can you afford it? And so what we end up doing is we kind of hope that if aliens good enough or we hope that if you excellent tunnel is good enough, and we can actually apply more advanced techniques there because we can't physically, financially afford that appliance to see all of the traffic, and now that we have a distributed model with this accelerator, we could do it. >>So what's the what's in it for the customer real quick. I think this is an interesting point. You mentioned policy. Everyone in networking those policies just a great thing. And it has. You hear it being talked about up the stack as well. When you start getting to orchestrate microservices and what not all that good stuff going on their containers and whatnot and modern applications. What's the benefit to the customers with this approach? Because what I heard was more scale, more edge deployment, flexibility relative to security policies and application. Enablement. I mean, is that what what's the customer get out of this architecture? What's the enablement? >>It comes down to taking again the capabilities that were that top of rack switch and distracting them down. So that makes simplicity smaller. Blast Radius is for failure, smaller failure domains, maintenance on the networks and the systems become easier. Your ability to integrate across workloads becomes infinitely easier. Um, and again, you know, we always want to kind of separate each one of those layers. So, just as in, say, a Vieques land network, my leaf and spine don't have to be tightly coupled together. I can now do this at a different layer and so you can run a deep You with any networking in the core there. And so you get this extreme flexibility, you can start small. You can scale large. Um, you know, to me that the possibilities are endless. >>It's a great security control Playing really flexibility is key, and and also being situationally aware of any kind of threats or new vectors or whatever is happening in the network. Alexandra, this is huge Upside, right? You've already identified some, uh, successes with some customers on your early field trials. What are they doing? And why are they attracted? The solution? >>Yeah, I think the response from customer has been the most encouraging and exciting for for us to, uh, to sort of continuing work and develop this product. And we have actually learned a lot in the process. Um, we talked to three or two or three cloud providers. We talked to s P um, sort of telco type of networks, uh, as well as enter large enterprise customers. Um, in one particular case, um uh, one, I think. Let me let me call out a couple of examples here just to give you a flavour. There is a service provider, a cloud provider in Asia who is actually managing a cloud where they are offering services based on multiple hypervisors their native services based on Zen. But they also, um, ramp into the cloud workloads based on SX I and N K P M. Depending on what the customer picks from the piece from the menu. And they have the problem of now orchestrating through the orchestrate or integrating with Zen Centre with this fear with open stock to coordinate this multiple environments and in the process to provide security, they actually deploy virtual appliances everywhere, which has a lot of cost complication, and it's up into the service of you the promise that they saw in this technology they call it. Actually, game changing is actually to remove all this complexity, even a single network, and distribute the micro segmentation service directly into the fabric. And overall, they're hoping to get out of it. Tremendous OPEC's benefit and overall operational simplification for the cloud infrastructure. That's one important use case, um, another large enterprise customer, a global enterprise customer is running both Essex I and I purvey in their environment, and they don't have a solution to do micro segmentation consistently across Hypervisors. So again, micro segmentation is a huge driver. Security looks like it's a recurring theme talking to most of these customers and in the telco space. Um, uh, we're working with a few telco customers on the CFT programme, uh, where the main goal is actually to Arman Eyes Network operation. They typically handle all the V NFC with their own homegrown DPD K stock. This is overly complex. It is, frankly, also slow and inefficient. And then they have a physical network to manage the idea of having again one network to coordinate the provisioning of cloud services between the take of the NFC. Uh, the rest of the infrastructure is extremely powerful on top of the offloading capability. After by the blue fill the pews. Those are just some examples. >>There's a great use case, a lot more potential. I see that with the unified cloud networking. Great stuff shout out to you guys that NVIDIA, you've been following your success for a long time and continuing to innovate his cloud scales and pluribus here with unified networking. Kind of bringing the next level great stuff. Great to have you guys on and again, software keeps, uh, driving the innovation again. Networking is just part of it, and it's the key solution. So I got to ask both of you to wrap this up. How can cloud operators who are interested in in this new architecture and solution learn more? Because this is an architectural ship. People are working on this problem. They're trying to think about multiple clouds are trying to think about unification around the network and giving more security more flexibility to their teams. Google Cloud Announcements and Day 2 Show Wrap with DR | Cloud City Live 2021
>>Um, okay, thanks to the studio there for the handoff. Appreciate it. We're here for breaking news and it's exciting that we have who's the managing director. Google is breaking some hard news here, Dave. We want to bring him in and get commentary while we end up Dave too. Honestly, the story here is cloud city. We are in the cloud city and all, thanks for coming on remotely into our physical hybrid set here. Thanks for coming >>On. Thank you, John. And very excited to be here. What Juliet. >>Well, we got Bon Jovi ready to play. Everyone's waiting for that concert in the year. The only thing standing between bunch of LV and all the great stuff. So a lot of people watching. Thanks for coming on, sir. So you guys got some big news, um, first Erickson partners with you guys on 5g platform, deal with Anthem, as well as, uh, open ran Alliance. You guys are joining huge, a Testament to the industry. I see Google with all your innovation you guys have in the big three cloud hyperscalers. Obviously you guys invented SRE, so you know, you no stranger to large scale. What's the news. Let's tell us why this Erickson news is so important. Let's start with the Erickson announcement. >>Sure. So John, I mean, we are very excited today to finally bring to the market, the strategic partnership that we've been building with Erickson for the last few months, uh, the partnership to recent retreat, which is very important to the industry is you're actually doing this in conjunction with very large CSPs. So it's not been in isolation. You are in fact in the press release that we have already launched something to get the big telecom Italia in Italy, because you will see that also in the past. And really the partnership is on three pillars. Number one, how can CSBs monetize 5g and edge, which is the real team at the moment using Google clouds solutions like the edge computing platform and, and POS, and Erikson's cutting edge 5g components, 5g solutions. And if we can onboard these together at the CSP, such as telecom Italia, that creates massive pain to market efficiency. So that's 0.1 because speed and agility is key John, but then point to it also unlocks a lot of edge use cases for a bunch of verticals, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, so on, which are already starting to launch together with that. Excellent. And so that's the second pillar. And then the final pillar of course, is this continuously cloud native innovation that you just highlighted. John, we are going to try and double down on it between ourselves and Ericsson to really time created this cloud native application suite or 5g or whatever. >>Talk about the innovations around cloud, because the message we're hearing him this year at mobile world Congress, is that the public cloud is driving the innovation. And, you know, I can be a little bit over the top. So the telcos are slow. They're like glaciers, they move slow, but they're just moving packets. They are there. They're moving the network around. The innovation is happening on top. So there's some hardened operations operating the networks. Now you have a build concept cloud native enables that. So you've got containers. You can put that encapsulate that older technology and integrated in. So this is not a rip and replace. Someone has to die to win. This is a partnership with the tellers. Can you share your thoughts on that piece? >>Smart Antone's photo? We believe that it's a massive partnership opportunity. There's zero conflict or tensions in this sort of ecosystem. And the reason for that is when you talk about that containerization and right once and deploy everywhere type architecture that we are trying to do, that's where the cloud native really helps. Like when you create Ericsson 5g solutions with the operators, adjust telecom Italia, once you build a solution, you don't have to worry about, do I need to kick it back again and again, but every deployment, as long as your mantra, genetics and working, you shouldn't be able to have the same experience. >>Yeah, I'm John. I talk all the time in the cube about how developers are really going to drive the edge. You're clearly doing that with your distributed cloud, building out a telco cloud. I wonder if you could talk a little bit more about how you see that evolving. A lot of the AI that's done today is done in the cloud. A lot of modeling being done. When you think about edge, you think about AI inferencing, you think about all these monetization opportunities. How are you thinking about that? >>So I think David, first of all, it's a fan best six Sigma in how we are looked in at analytics at the edge, right? So we, uh, we have realized that is a very, very, uh, uh, uh, data computing, heavy operation. So certainly the training of the models is still going to stay in cloud for the foreseeable future. But the influencing part that you mentioned is there something that we can offer to the edge? Why is that so important in the pandemic era, think of running a shop or a factory floor, completely autonomously meeting zero minimal human intervention. And if you want to look at an assembly line and look at AI influencing as a way to find out assembly line defects on products in manufacturing, that's very difficult problem to solve unless you actually create those influencing models at the edge. So creating that ecosystem of an Erickson and a Google cloud carrier gives you that edge placement of the workloads that would fit right next to our factory floor in our manufacturing example. And then on top of that, you could run that AI influence thing to really put in the hands of the manufacturer, a visual inspection capability to just bring this to life. >>Great. Thank you for that. And now the other piece of the announcement of course, is the open, open ran. We've been talking about that all weekend and you know, you well, remember when cloud first came out, people were concerned about security. Of course. Now everybody's asking the question, can we still get the reliability and the security that we're used to with the telcos? And of course over time we learned that you guys actually pretty good at security. So how do you see the security component, maybe first talk about the open ran piece, why that's important and how security fits? >>Sure. So first of all, open trend is something that we have taken great interest in the last year or so as it started evolving. And the reason for that is fairly simple. Dave, this aggregation of networks has been happening for some time in the radio layer. We believe that's the final frontier of sort of unlocking and dis-aggregating that radio layer. And why is it so important? 80% of the operators spend globally is on radio. 80% is on radio. If you disaggregate that. And if the internet synergies for your CSP partners and clients, that meant you have standard purpose hardware standard for software with open interfaces, number one, massive difference in VCO. Number two, the supply chain gets streamlined and become still really, really simple way to manage a fairly large distribution. That's about to get larger in 5g and the capital clarity that 5g needs. >>You're thinking of tens of thousands of micro cells and radio cells going everywhere. And having that kind of standardized hardware software with openings of Essex is an extremely important cost dimension to every new site finished that the reason we got to exact open brand was you can now run for a lot of API APIs on the radio net, cetera, that then certainly brings a whole developer community on the radio later. That then helps you do a bunch of things like closed loop automation for network optimization, as well as potentially looking at monetization opportunities by hyper personalizing, yours and mine experiences at the waist level from the self-doubt. And so that really is what is driving us towards this open grind paper. Come on, we go and >>Got a minute and a half. I want to get your thoughts real quick on, on open source and the innovation. Um, Danielle Royston, who's the CEO of telco, Dr. She's at a keynote today. And she mentioned that the iPhone 14 years ago was launched. Okay. And you think about open and you mentioned proprietary with the 5g and having Iran be more commodity and industry standard. That's going to lower the costs increase the surface here of infrastructure. Everyone wins because everyone wants more connectivity options. Software is going to be the key to success for the telco industry. And open source is driving. That is Android. The playbook that you guys pioneered, obviously at Google with the smart phones was very successful. How is that a playbook or an indicator to what could happen at telecom? >>Absolutely. John and the parallel and analogy that you raised is photon. Be believed in the telco world and tossed multi cloud as a unifying software development layer. The app development platform is the way that people will start to drive this innovation, whether it's radio or whether it's in the core or whether it's on the side of pups, same software planning, everywhere that really allows you that whole development models that we are familiar with, but on the telecom side. And that's where we are seeing some massive innovation opportunities for systems to come on board. >>That's great stuff. And I was just heard someone in the hallway just yesterday and say, you want to be the smartphone. You don't want to be the Blackberry going forward. That's pretty much the consensus here at mobile world Congress. I'm all. It's been a big, it's been a big day-to-day at MWC and in cloud city, really starting to get packed. I mean, everyone's coming in the band's warming up. You can kind of hear it. Um, I think Elon Musk is about to go on as well. So I mean, it's really happening all the buzz about cloud city out there in the hallway. Yeah. Yeah, no, I mean, I think everyone's talking about it. I'm really, really excited with how it's going. >>Well, this is awesome. While we got you here, we want to put you to work being the cube analyst for the segment. You just heard Google. Uh, we broke them in for a breaking news segment. So hard news Erickson partnership. We're in the factory, former Erickson booth. They're not even here, it's now the Calco VR booth, but that's a relation. And then open ran again, open source, you got five G you got open source all happening. What's your take on this? >>You see, you know, there's two big. And I, I talked about it, my keynote this morning, and there's two big technological changes that are happening in our industry simultaneously. And I don't think we could have had it MWC 21. I certainly wanted to make it about the public cloud. I think I'm sort of successful in doing that. And I think the other piece is open ramp, right? And I think these two big shifts are happening and, um, I'm really thrilled about it. And so, yeah, >>Well I loved your keynote. We were here, live. Chloe was here filling in for Dave while David was going to do some research and some breaking stories to you are on stage. And we were talking well, he's like, there's trillions of dollars, John on the table. And I was making the point, the money is at the middle of the table and it's changing hands if people don't watch it. And then you onstage that this trillions of dollars, this is a real competitive shift with dollars on the table. And you've got cultural collision. You got operators and builders trying to figure out it feels like dev ops is coming in here. Yeah. I mean, what's the, what's the holistic vibe. What's >>The, yeah, I think my message is about, we can use the software and specifically the software, the public cloud to double your ARPU without massive cap X expenditure. And I think the CSPs is always viewed to get the increase in ARPU. I got to build out the network. I got to spend a lot of money. And with these two technologies that require might be dropped. And then in exchange for doubling our poo, why not? We should do that. Absolutely. >>You know, your message has been pretty clear that you got to get on, on the wave that arrived the way you're going to become driftwood. As John said yesterday. And I think it's pretty, it's becoming pretty clear that that's the case for the telcos. I feel like Danielle, that they were entering this decade, perhaps with a little bit more humility than they have in the past. And then, you know, maybe, especially as it relates to developers, we're just talking about building out the edge. We always talk about how developers are really going to be a key factor in the edge. And that's not a wheelhouse necessarily. It's obviously they're going to have to partner for that to have going to have to embrace cloud native. I mean, it's pretty clear that your premise is right on it. We'll see how long it takes, but if it, if they don't move fast, you know, what's going to happen. Well, I >>Think you look at it from the enterprise's perspective. And I think we just heard Google talking about it. We need to provide a tech stack that the enterprises can write to now, historically they haven't had this opportunity historically that CSPs have provided it. Now you're going to be able to write against Google's tech stack. And that's something that is documented. It's available. There's developers out there that know it. Um, and so I think that's the big opportunity and this might be the big use case that they've been looking for with 5g and looking forward to 16th. And so it's a huge opportunity for CSS. >>I think that's an important point because you got to place bets. And if I'm betting on Google or Amazon, Microsoft, okay. Those are pretty safe bets, right. Those guys are going to be around. >>I mean, they're like, no, don't trust the hyperscalers. I'm like, um, are you guys nuts? If they're safe, right. Safe >>Bets in terms of your investment in technology, now you got to move fast. Yeah. That's the other piece of it. You've got to change your business model. >>Well, you gotta be in the right side of history too. I mean, I mean, what is trust actually really mean? The snowflake trust Amazon, it sure did to get them where they are. Um, but now that's a >>Great example, John. It really is because there's a company that can move fast, but at the same time they compete with the same time they add incremental value. And so yeah, >>Here, the, you can see the narrative like, oh no, we're partnering telcos. Aren't bad. No one needs to die to bring in the new containers. Do we'll help them manage that operational legacy. But if they don't move, they're going to have an asset. That'll get rolled up into a SPAC or some sort of private equity deal. And because the old model of building cap backs and extract rents is kind of shifting because the value shifting. So to me, I think this is what we're watching still kind of unknown. Danielle Love to get your thoughts on this because if the value shifts to services, which is a consumption model like cloud, yeah. Then you can, don't have to try and extract the rents out of the cap ex >>Yeah. I don't think you need to own the entire stack to provide value. And I think that's where we are today in telco, right there. I mean, nuts and bolts of the stack, the servers, you know, the cabling, everything. And I'm like, stand on the shoulders of these amazing tech giants that have solved, you know, mega data centers, right. Huge data centers at scale, and just leverage their, their investment and uh, for your own benefit, it starts to focus. And we heard, um, all talking about it starts to focus on your subscriber and driving a great experience for us. Right? Yeah. Well, you're >>Talking about that many times they can do, but you're right. If the conversation hasn't has to go beyond, okay, we're just conductivity. It's gotta be ongoing and be like, oh, it's $10 a month for roaming charges. Ah, great. Yeah. Tick that box, right? It's those value added services that you're talking about and it's an infinite number of those that can be developed. And that's where the partnerships come in a creativity in the industry. It's just >>A blank piece of paper for, well, we, you know, everyone thinks Google knows everything about you, right. We've had the experience on our phone where they're serving of ads and you're like, how did you write Facebook? But you know, who knows more about us than, than Google or your mother, even your telco, you take your phone with you everywhere. Right? And so it's time to start unlocking all of that knowledge and using it to provide >>A really great, by the way, congratulations on the CEO to Toby and the investment a hundred million dollars. That's a game changer statement again, back to the billing. And there's a good, there's a whole new chain, even all up and down the stack of solutions, great stuff. And I want to unpack that tomorrow. I don't hold that. We're going and we're going to meet tomorrow. I want, I wanna want to leave that to stay >>In the data for a second, because you made the point before in your keynote as well. That it's, that it's the data that drives the value of these companies. Why is it that apple, Amazon, Google Facebook now trillion dollar evaluations. It's all about the data and the telcos have the data, but they can't figure out how to turn that into valuation. >>There's two parts of the data problem, which is number one, the data is trapped in on-premise siloed systems that are not open. You can't connect them and they certainly can't do without. And we talked about it, I think yesterday, you know, millions of dollars of expenditure. And I think the other piece that's really interesting is that it's not connected to a mechanism to get it out in a timely manner, right? This is data that's aging by the minute. And when it takes you weeks to get the insight it's useless. Right? And so to Togi we announced the launch to Togi, I'll get a little to Tokyo plug in there, right. To Toby is connecting that insight to the charger, to the engagement engine and getting it out to subscribers. I think that's the beginning of this connection. I think it's a hard problem to solve and would have been solved already. >>But I think the key is leveraging the public cloud to get your data out of on-premise and, and mashing it up against these great services that Google and Azure and Amazon provides to drive it into the hands of the subscriber, make it very actionable, very monetizeable right at the end, that's what they want. More ARPU, more revenue. Right. And you know, we heard some keynotes from GSA yesterday, some big, big guys, you know, talking about how, you know, it's not fair that these other communication platforms are not regulated. You know, telco is heavily regulated and they're like, it's not fair. And I'm like, yep. It's not fair. That's like right. South complaining about it and start treating your customers better. So they are, they're happy to give you more. >>Yeah. And I think that's the message about the assets do, um, well, one thing I will say is this mobile world Congress is that we've been having a lot of fun here in cloud city. I have to ask you a personal question. Have you been having fun? You look great on the keynote of spring to your staff, cloud cities. Beautiful. Spectacular here. Give us some highlights, personal highlights from your trip. So far, >>Number one, I'm, I'm psyched that the keynote is delivered and, and done. I mean, I think it takes my blood pressure down a blind, um, you know, the spring in my step, I wore these fun little tennis shoes and, and that was really fun, but yeah, I'm having, I'm having, I think a lot of things, great conversations. Yes. The attendance has reduced, um, you know, usually you see hundreds of people from the big group carriers, especially the European groups and yeah, the attendance is reduced, but the senior guys are here, right. The senior leadership teams are in the booth or having meetings, running amazing conversations. I think the last year we really did live a decade in one year. I think they woke up to the power of the public cloud. I mean, there was no way that they got business done without cloud based tools. And I think the light bulb went off, I think I'm right in the right moment. Awesome. Do you think that, >>Do you think that they'd think in there, like left money on the table because you look at the pandemic, there were three categories of companies, losers, people who held the line struggled and then winners. Yeah. Big time tailwind booming. Obviously the zooms of the world telcos did well. They were up and running. Uh, this, this was good. You think we might've left some money on the table? They could have done more. >>Yeah. I think the ones that were, you know, people talk about digital transformation where digital telco we're digitally enabled, but I think the pandemic really tested this. Right. Can you deliver a contactless SIM or do you need to go to a store in person to get to go pick it up? And I had a broken SIM during the pandemic. My provider made me go to the store and I'm like, is it even open? And so I heard other stories of telcos that were very digitally enabled, right. They were using Uber to deliver Sims, all sorts of fun, crazy stuff and new ideas. And they were able to pivot right. Agile. And so I think, I think that was a really big telemedicine booming. So >>If you were in a digital business during the pandemic in general, you're out of business maybe unless you were telco, but I think you're right. I think the light bulb went off. It was an aha moment. And they said, oh, if >>We don't, I mean, I am not kidding. Right. As an ex CEO where I was trying to collect signatures on renewals, right. Here's a DocuSign, which for the world is like, duh. I mean, our school uses DocuSign. I had telcos that required an in-person signature, right. In some country once a month on Tuesday between 10 and two. And I'm like, how are you doing business? Like that? That's like the dark ages. >>Yeah. This is where the crypto guys got it right. With know your customer. Right. >>Because they have the data. Well, there's a lot of things that come in wrong. We don't want to get the whole show on that, but then you have great to have you drop biopsy Bon Jovi's here. How did you get Bon Jovi? Huge fan, New Jersey boy Patriots fan. We'd love it. Well, >>Yeah. I mean, who doesn't love Bon Jovi. Right. Um, we knew we wanted a rocker, right. Rock and roll is all about challenging the status quo. We are in the cloud city and all, thanks for coming on remotely So you guys got some big news, um, first Erickson partners with you guys on 5g platform, And so that's the second pillar. And, you know, And the reason for that is I wonder if you could talk a little bit But the influencing part that you mentioned is And now the other piece of the announcement of course, is the open, open ran. And the reason for that is fairly simple. And having that kind of standardized hardware software with openings of Essex is an extremely important cost And she mentioned that the iPhone John and the parallel and analogy that you raised is photon. And I was just heard someone in the hallway just yesterday and say, you want to be the smartphone. Watch that in there. We're going to see you to Mike. I mean, everyone's coming in the band's warming up. And then open ran again, open source, you got five G you And I don't think we could have had it MWC 21. and some breaking stories to you are on stage. And I think the CSPs is always viewed to get the increase in ARPU. And I think it's pretty, it's becoming pretty clear that that's the case for the telcos. And I think we just heard Google talking about it. I think that's an important point because you got to place bets. I'm like, um, are you guys nuts? You've got to change your business model. Well, you gotta be in the right side of history too. And so yeah, And because the old model of building cap backs and extract I mean, nuts and bolts of the stack, the servers, If the conversation hasn't has to go beyond, And so it's time to start unlocking And I want to unpack In the data for a second, because you made the point before in your keynote as well. I think yesterday, you know, millions of dollars of expenditure. But I think the key is leveraging the public cloud to get your data out of on-premise and, I have to ask you a personal question. This is the CUBE Conversation. >> Hey everybody this is Dave Vellante and welcome to the special CUBE Conversation. I'm really excited to have Keith Bradley here he's the Vice President of IT at Nature Fresh Farms. Keith good to see you. >> Hey, good to see you too there Dave. >> All right, first of all I got to thank you for sending me these awesome veggies. I got these wonderful peppers. I got red, orange. I got the yellow. I got to tell you Keith these tomatoes almost didn't make it. It's my last one on the vine. >> (Laughs) >> These guys are like candy. It's amazing. >> Yap. They are the tasty thing. >> Wonderful. >> You know what, I'll probably just join you right here now too. I'll have one right here right now and I'll join you right now. >> My kids love these but I'm not bringing them home. And then I got these other grape tomatoes and then I've got these mini pepper poppers that are so sweet. You know which one I'm talking about here. And then we've got the tomatoes on the vine. I mean, it's just unbelievable that you guys are able to do this in a greenhouse. Big cukes, little cukes. Wow. Thank you so much for sending these. Delicious. Really appreciate it. >> Yeah. Well thank you for having them. It's a great little tree and it's something that I know you're going to enjoy. And I love for everybody to have it and there's not a person I haven't seen that hasn't enjoyed our tomatoes and peppers. >> Now tell me more about Nature Fresh Farms. Let's talk about your business I want to spend some time on that. We've got IoT, we got a data lifecycle. All kinds of cool stuff, scanners. Paint a picture for us. >> I like to even go... If you don't mind. I like to even go back to where our roots actually came from. So Peter Quiring, our owner actually was a builder by nature and he was actually back in the year 2000 really wanted to get into the greenhouse because he was a manufacturer. And he built our phase one facility back in 2000 under the concept that he said, "there's computers out there." And Peter will be the first one to say, "I don't know how to use them, "but I know that it can do a lot for us." So even back in 2000, we were starting to experiment with using the computers back then to control the greenhouse, to do much of the functionality. Then he bought it under the concept as our sister company, South Essex Fabricating that he would sell the greenhouse turnkey to somebody else. Well, talking to him and I've been around since about phase two. He basically said, "when I built phase three, "which is our first 32 acre range, I realized that is actually in the pepper business now," and he realized he was a grower and then he fell in love with the industry. And again, kept pushing how we can do things automated? How do we can do things? How do we get more yield, more everything out of what we do? And as a lover of technology he made it a great environment for everybody including the growers to work in and to just do something new. >> Well, I mean the thing that we know that as populations grow we're not getting more land. Okay (laughs). So, you have to get better yield and the answer is not to just pound vegetables with pesticides. So maybe talk about how you guys are different from sort of a conventional farming approach, just in terms of maybe your yield, how you treat the plants, how you're able to pick throughout the year, give us some insight there. >> So basically I'll start with through the lifecycle of a pepper. So it's basically planted at a propagator and then it comes to our facility and it comes in the little white boxes here behind me. And they actually are usually about that tall. They're about a foot tall. Maybe a little more when they come to us. And right from that point in time, we start keeping track of everything. How much we put water, how much water it doesn't take, what nutrients it takes, how much it weighs. We actually weigh the vines to know how much they are in real time. We do everything top to bottom. So we actually control the life cycle of the plant. On top of that, we also look and have a whole bio scout division. So it's a group of people that are starting to use AI to actually look at how the bugs are attacking the plants. And then at the same time, we release a good bug that will eventually die off to kill the bugs that are starting to harm the plant. So it basically allows us to basically do as close to natural way of growing a plant as possible without spraying or doing anything like that at night. It's actually funny 'cause there's a lot pictures out there and you think that a greenhouse, it's going to be wet in here. And actually for the most part, it is dry all the time. Like I'm very hot, it's very dry and it's just how we work. We don't let anything inside. We control everything in that plant's life. And now with our newest range, we even control how much light it gets. So we basically give it light all night too. And even some nights when it's a little days out, not like today, but when it's a little dark out and the sun's not up there, we'll actually make sure it gets more light to get that more yield out of it. So we can grow 24/7 12 months a year. >> Okay Keith. So it sounds like you're using data and AI to really inform you as to nature's best formula for the good bugs, the bad bugs, the lighting to really drive yields and quality. >> Yeah, we analyze, like I said, everything from the edge that we collect, like I said, we have over 2000 sensors out in the greenhouse and we keep expanding it more and more every year to collect everything from the length of the vine, the weight of the vine in real time. And we basically collect it from the day the plant is born to the day that we actually take it all out to be composted. We know how much light it got. Does it need to get light that day? We analyze everything in general and it allows us to take that data back in real time to make it better and to look at the past data to do better again. Like you hear, some times we have actually have a cart going by here now. That data from that cart, we'll go back to our growers and they will know how much weight they got out of that row in the next 15 to 20 minutes. So they can actually look, okay, how did that plant react to the sun, how's tomorrow? Does it need more nutrients? Does it need a little less? They take all that data from the core and make sure it's all accurate and as up to date as possible. >> So Keith, and maybe even you can give us approximations, but so how much acreage do you have? And how much acreage would you need with conventional farming techniques to get the kind of yields and quality that you guys are able to achieve? >> So we own 160 acres of greenhouse that's actually under glass. It's actually 200 acres total of land but what's 160 acres approximately of greenhouse that's actually under glass. 'A' we're always constantly growing. Our demand is up that that's why we grow so fast. Usually you're looking at both 12 to one. So for every foot squared of space, you're looking for equivalent is about 12 feet squared for a conventional farm. That's the general average. Mostly because we can harvest year round, we can continually harvest. We maximize the harvest amount and everything total. >> I'm also interested in your regime, your team. So obviously you're supporting from an IT perspective, but you've got all this AI going on. You've got this data life cycle. So what does the data team look like? >> We're actually... I always laugh though. I like to call our growers are basically data analysts. They're not really part of my IT team, but they basically have learned the role of how to analyze data. So we'll have basically one or two junior growers, per range. So probably about, I'd say about, we have about 10 to 12 junior growers and then one senior grower per whole farm. So probably about three or four senior growers at any one time. But my IT staff is actually about a team of four, five, including myself. And we are always constantly looking at how to improve data and how to automate the process. That's what drives us to do more. And that's where the robots even come in is every time we look at something, it's not even from an IT perspective, but even just from a picking perspective, how do we automate this? How do we do a better tomorrow? How do we continually clean this up? And it just never ends. And every year we look back, okay, it cost us a dollar per meter squared or per foot square for the people down South in America there now. We look at that and how do we do that better next year? How do we do better the next day? And it's a constant looking and it's something we look at refining and now that's why we're going so much into AI 'cause we want to not look at the data and decide what to do. We want the data to tell us what to do. >> You guys are on the cutting edge. I mean this is the future of farming. I wonder if we could talk about the IT, what does the IT group look like in the future of farming? I mean you guys, what's your infrastructure look like? Are you all in the cloud or you can't be in the cloud because this is really an extent of an IoT or an edge use case. Paint a picture of the IT infrastructure for us if you would. >> So the IT infrastructure it's a very large amount at the edge. We take a lot of the information from the edge and we bring it back to our core to do our analyzing. But for the most part, we don't really leverage the cloud much yet and most of it is on-prem. We are starting to experiment with moving out to the cloud. And a lot of it is, you'll laugh though, is because the farming and agriculture industry really was stagnant for a long time and not really stagnant, but just didn't really progress as fast as the rest of the world. So now they're just starting to catch up and realizing, wow, this is a growing industry. We can do a lot of cool things with technology in this range. And now it's just exploded. So I'm going to say in the next five to 10 years, you're going to see a lot more private clouds and things like that happening with us. I know we're right now starting to just look at creating with the VxRail, a private cloud, and a concept like that to start to test that water again of how to analyze and how to do more things onsite and in the cloud and leverage everything top to bottom. >> So you've got your own servers at the edge... So Intel based servers, what's your storage infrastructure look like? Maybe describe the network a little bit. >> Yap. Okay. So we are basically, I'll admit here, we are a Dell factory. We're basically everything top to bottom. Right now we're on an FX2, Dell FX2 platform. It's basically our core platform we've been using for the last five years. It does all of our analitics and stuff like that. And we have just transformed our unstructured data to Isilon. It's been one of the best things for us to clean that up and make things move forward. It was actually one of those things that management actually looked at me and kind of looked at me and said, "what are you nuts?" Because we basically bought our first Isilon and then four months later, I said, "I love this. I got to have more," because everybody loved it so much in the way of store things. So we actually doubled the size of it within four months, which was a great... It was actually very seamless to do, but we're now also in a position where the FX2 in that stage type of situation didn't quite work for us to expand it. It wasn't as easy to expand. So we wanted to get away that we could expand at a moment's notice. We can change, we can scale out much faster and do things easier. So that's why we're transforming to a VxRail to basically clean that up and allow us to expand as we grow. >> So you're essentially trying to replicate the agility and speed of the cloud but like you say, you're an edge use case. So you can't do everything in cloud. Is that the right way to think about it? You mentioned private cloud but just sort of cloud experience, but at the edge. >> Yeah. We try to keep everything at the edge. It just makes it a lot easier to control. Because we're so big. Think about it like you are bringing all this information back from everywhere. It's a lot of data to come back to one spot. So we're trying to push that more, to keep it at the edge so that we can analyze it right there in the moment instead of having to come back and do it but yeah. And I think you'll see in the next few years, a lot of change to the cloud, I think it'll start to be there, but again, like I said, the private cloud will probably be the way most will go. >> Okay. So I got to ask you then, I mean, you've really tested that agility over the last 60 days with this COVID pandemic. How were you able to respond? What role did data play? You had supply chain considerations. Obviously, you got a lot of online ordering going on. You got to get produce out. You've got social distancing. How were you able to handle that crisis? >> Well it was a really great thing for our team. Our team really came together in a great way. We had a lot of people that did have to go home and we started because we had so many ranges all over, already about a year and a half ago we started implementing an SD-WAN solution to allow us to connect to different areas and to do all kinds of stuff. So it was actually very quick for us to be able to send the others home. We used our VeloCloud SD-WAN to expand it. It was very seamless and we just started sending people home left, right and center. The staff that had to stay here, like the workers out in the greenhouse here now are offshore labor as we call it. They work great. They worked with at every moment of the day and they dug right in. We haven't lost heartbeat. Like actually our orders have gone up in the last... Through this COVID experience more than anything else. And it's really learned... It really helped from an IT perspective and I laugh about this and it's one of the greatest things about what I do, I love this moment, is where sometimes we were very hesitant to jump on this video collaboration. I said, "hey, that's a great way of doing this." But sometimes people they're very stuck in their ways and they love it and they're like, "I don't know about this whole team Zoom "and all that fun stuff," but because of this, they've now embraced it and it's actually really changed the way even they've worked. So in a way, it kind of sped up the processes of us becoming more agile that way in a way that would've taken a long time. They now love teams. They love being able to communicate that way. They love being able to just do a quick call. All that functionality has changed and even made us more efficient that way. (mumbles) >> How does this all affect your IT budget allocation? Did you get more budget? Was it flat budget? Did you have to shift budget to sort of work from home and securing the remote workers? Can you sort of describe that dynamic? >> So it did, I'll be true, there's no way around it to not up my budge. They basically said, "yep, "you have to do what you have to do. "We have to continue to function, "we cannot let our greenhouse go down "and what do you need to do to make it happen?" So I quickly contacted Dell and got things coming and improve our infrastructure as much as we could to get ready. I contacted (mumbles). I basically made it so that my team can support every single part of our facet from home if they actually had to go home. So for example, if I had to get stuck at home, I could do every single part of my job from home, including the growers as much as possible. So say our senior grower had to get home. I locked him up. He has to be able to see everything and do everything. So we actually expanded that very quickly and it was a cost to us. But again, there's no technology we didn't implement that we hadn't talked about before. We just hadn't said, "you know what? It's just not the right time to try that." And now we just went ahead and we just said, we got to do it now. And there's not one part of our aspect that we don't reuse. >> Was Dell able to deliver? Did they have supply constraint issues? I mean, I know there's been huge demand for that whole remote worker. Were able to get what you needed in time? >> Yeah. You know what, I think that we hit it a little ahead of the scope of when things started to go bad, our senior management, our president and all that. He basically said, "you know Keith, "we got to get ready on this. "We got to get some stuff coming." We never ran out of some things. The quirkiest thing and it is just a reality, the biggest thing was webcams was to kind of trying to get webcams. Other than that, there was issues with UPS and Purolator and FedEx because they were just inundated too. But for the most part, we kept everything moving. There wasn't a time that I was actually really waiting on something that we had to have. One of the other great things of our senior team that's here is they've really given me the latitude to say, "what do you need and how do you need to do it?" And so I have my own basically storage area of stuff everywhere. And my team does laugh at me 'cause they call me a hoarder and I basically have too much. And we were able to use either some older stuff or some newer stuff and combine it and we got everything running. There was only a little hiccups here and there but nothing ever is going to go perfect. >> Yeah. But it's enabling business results. We've asked a lot of it pros like yourself like what do you expect the shape of the recovery? And obviously our hearts go out to those small businesses that have been decimated. You're clearly seeing industries like airlines and hospitality and restaurants are obviously in rough shape, but there is a bifurcated story here. Some businesses and it sounds like in this camp where the pandemic was actually a tailwind, your online demand is up, food, vegetables, people... There were a lot of meat shortages. So people really turn to vegetables, is that right? Is that the shape of the recovery actually, is maybe not even V-shape, it's been a tailwind for Nature Fresh Farms. >> Yeah. You know what? It has been a tailwind and that's the right way to say it. We've just increased our yieldage. We've increased that, it's not unnew for us, that's been the biggest driving force for us is basically the demand for our product and building fast enough to keep up to that demand. Like we continually build and expand. We've got more ranges being built in the coming years like looking towards the 21, 22, 23 year. It's just going to just continue to expand and that is purely because of demand. And this COVID just again, escalated that little bit 'cause everybody's like, I really want the peppers and like you learned, we actually do have some tasty peppers and tomatoes. So it does make it a nice little treat to have at home for the kids. >> Well, it's an amazing story of tech meets farming. And as you said for years your industry kind of became quiet when it came to tech, but this is the future of farming, in my opinion. This is the CUBE Conversation. >> Hey everybody this is Dave Vellante and welcome to the special CUBE Conversation. I'm really excited to have Keith Bradley here he's the Vice President of IT at Nature Fresh Farms. Keith good to see you. >> Hey, good to see you too there Dave. >> All right, first of all I got to thank you for sending me these awesome veggies. I got these wonderful peppers. I got red, orange. I got the yellow. I got to tell you Keith these tomatoes almost didn't make it. It's my last one on the vine. >> (Laughs) >> These guys are like candy. It's amazing. >> Yap. They are the tasty thing. >> Wonderful. >> You know what, I'll probably just join you right here now too. I'll have one right here right now and I'll join you right now. >> My kids love these but I'm not bringing them home. And then I got these other grape tomatoes and then I've got these mini pepper poppers that are so sweet. You know which one I'm talking about here. And then we've got the tomatoes on the vine. I mean, it's just unbelievable that you guys are able to do this in a greenhouse. Big cukes, little cukes. Wow. Thank you so much for sending these. Delicious. Really appreciate it. >> Yeah. Well thank you for having them. It's a great little tree and it's something that I know you're going to enjoy. And I love for everybody to have it and there's not a person I haven't seen that hasn't enjoyed our tomatoes and peppers. >> Now tell me more about Nature Fresh Farms. Let's talk about your business I want to spend some time on that. We've got IoT, we got a data lifecycle. All kinds of cool stuff, scanners. Paint a picture for us. >> I like to even go... If you don't mind. I like to even go back to where our roots actually came from. So Peter Quiring, our owner actually was a builder by nature and he was actually back in the year 2000 really wanted to get into the greenhouse because he was a manufacturer. And he built our phase one facility back in 2000 under the concept that he said, "there's computers out there." And Peter will be the first one to say, "I don't know how to use them, "but I know that it can do a lot for us." So even back in 2000, we were starting to experiment with using the computers back then to control the greenhouse, to do much of the functionality. Then he bought it under the concept as our sister company, South Essex Fabricating that he would sell the greenhouse turnkey to somebody else. Well, talking to him and I've been around since about phase two. He basically said, "when I built phase three, "which is our first 32 acre range, I realized that is actually in the pepper business now," and he realized he was a grower and then he fell in love with the industry. And again, kept pushing how we can do things automated? How do we can do things? How do we get more yield, more everything out of what we do? And as a lover of technology he made it a great environment for everybody including the growers to work in and to just do something new. >> Well, I mean the thing that we know that as populations grow we're not getting more land. Okay (laughs). So, you have to get better yield and the answer is not to just pound vegetables with pesticides. So maybe talk about how you guys are different from sort of a conventional farming approach, just in terms of maybe your yield, how you treat the plants, how you're able to pick throughout the year, give us some insight there. >> So basically I'll start with through the lifecycle of a pepper. So it's basically planted at a propagator and then it comes to our facility and it comes in the little white boxes here behind me. And they actually are usually about that tall. They're about a foot tall. Maybe a little more when they come to us. And right from that point in time, we start keeping track of everything. How much we put water, how much water it doesn't take, what nutrients it takes, how much it weighs. We actually weigh the vines to know how much they are in real time. We do everything top to bottom. So we actually control the life cycle of the plant. On top of that, we also look and have a whole bio scout division. So it's a group of people that are starting to use AI to actually look at how the bugs are attacking the plants. And then at the same time, we release a good bug that will eventually die off to kill the bugs that are starting to harm the plant. So it basically allows us to basically do as close to natural way of growing a plant as possible without spraying or doing anything like that at night. It's actually funny 'cause there's a lot pictures out there and you think that a greenhouse, it's going to be wet in here. And actually for the most part, it is dry all the time. Like I'm very hot, it's very dry and it's just how we work. We don't let anything inside. We control everything in that plant's life. And now with our newest range, we even control how much light it gets. So we basically give it light all night too. And even some nights when it's a little days out, not like today, but when it's a little dark out and the sun's not up there, we'll actually make sure it gets more light to get that more yield out of it. So we can grow 24/7 12 months a year. >> Okay Keith. So it sounds like you're using data and AI to really inform you as to nature's best formula for the good bugs, the bad bugs, the lighting to really drive yields and quality. >> Yeah, we analyze, like I said, everything from the edge that we collect, like I said, we have over 2000 sensors out in the greenhouse and we keep expanding it more and more every year to collect everything from the length of the vine, the weight of the vine in real time. And we basically collect it from the day the plant is born to the day that we actually take it all out to be composted. We know how much light it got. Does it need to get light that day? We analyze everything in general and it allows us to take that data back in real time to make it better and to look at the past data to do better again. Like you hear, some times we have actually have a cart going by here now. That data from that cart, we'll go back to our growers and they will know how much weight they got out of that row in the next 15 to 20 minutes. So they can actually look, okay, how did that plant react to the sun, how's tomorrow? Does it need more nutrients? Does it need a little less? They take all that data from the core and make sure it's all accurate and as up to date as possible. >> So Keith, and maybe even you can give us approximations, but so how much acreage do you have? And how much acreage would you need with conventional farming techniques to get the kind of yields and quality that you guys are able to achieve? >> So we own 160 acres of greenhouse that's actually under glass. It's actually 200 acres total of land but what's 160 acres approximately of greenhouse that's actually under glass. 'A' we're always constantly growing. Our demand is up that that's why we grow so fast. Usually you're looking at both 12 to one. So for every foot squared of space, you're looking for equivalent is about 12 feet squared for a conventional farm. That's the general average. Mostly because we can harvest year round, we can continually harvest. We maximize the harvest amount and everything total. >> I'm also interested in your regime, your team. So obviously you're supporting from an IT perspective, but you've got all this AI going on. You've got this data life cycle. So what does the data team look like? >> We're actually... I always laugh though. I like to call our growers are basically data analysts. They're not really part of my IT team, but they basically have learned the role of how to analyze data. So we'll have basically one or two junior growers, per range. So probably about, I'd say about, we have about 10 to 12 junior growers and then one senior grower per whole farm. So probably about three or four senior growers at any one time. But my IT staff is actually about a team of four, five, including myself. And we are always constantly looking at how to improve data and how to automate the process. That's what drives us to do more. And that's where the robots even come in is every time we look at something, it's not even from an IT perspective, but even just from a picking perspective, how do we automate this? How do we do a better tomorrow? How do we continually clean this up? And it just never ends. And every year we look back, okay, it cost us a dollar per meter squared or per foot square for the people down South in America there now. We look at that and how do we do that better next year? How do we do better the next day? And it's a constant looking and it's something we look at refining and now that's why we're going so much into AI 'cause we want to not look at the data and decide what to do. We want the data to tell us what to do. >> You guys are on the cutting edge. I mean this is the future of farming. I wonder if we could talk about the IT, what does the IT group look like in the future of farming? I mean you guys, what's your infrastructure look like? Are you all in the cloud or you can't be in the cloud because this is really an extent of an IoT or an edge use case. Paint a picture of the IT infrastructure for us if you would. >> So the IT infrastructure it's a very large amount at the edge. We take a lot of the information from the edge and we bring it back to our core to do our analyzing. But for the most part, we don't really leverage the cloud much yet and most of it is on-prem. We are starting to experiment with moving out to the cloud. And a lot of it is, you'll laugh though, is because the farming and agriculture industry really was stagnant for a long time and not really stagnant, but just didn't really progress as fast as the rest of the world. So now they're just starting to catch up and realizing, wow, this is a growing industry. We can do a lot of cool things with technology in this range. And now it's just exploded. So I'm going to say in the next five to 10 years, you're going to see a lot more private clouds and things like that happening with us. I know we're right now starting to just look at creating with the VxRail, a private cloud, and a concept like that to start to test that water again of how to analyze and how to do more things onsite and in the cloud and leverage everything top to bottom. >> So you've got your own servers at the edge... So Intel based servers, what's your storage infrastructure look like? Maybe describe the network a little bit. >> Yap. Okay. So we are basically, I'll admit here, we are a Dell factory. We're basically everything top to bottom. Right now we're on an FX2, Dell FX2 platform. It's basically our core platform we've been using for the last five years. It does all of our analitics and stuff like that. And we have just transformed our unstructured data to Isilon. It's been one of the best things for us to clean that up and make things move forward. It was actually one of those things that management actually looked at me and kind of looked at me and said, "what are you nuts?" Because we basically bought our first Isilon and then four months later, I said, "I love this. I got to have more," because everybody loved it so much in the way of store things. So we actually doubled the size of it within four months, which was a great... It was actually very seamless to do, but we're now also in a position where the FX2 in that stage type of situation didn't quite work for us to expand it. It wasn't as easy to expand. So we wanted to get away that we could expand at a moment's notice. We can change, we can scale out much faster and do things easier. So that's why we're transforming to a VxRail to basically clean that up and allow us to expand as we grow. >> So you're essentially trying to replicate the agility and speed of the cloud but like you say, you're an edge use case. So you can't do everything in cloud. Is that the right way to think about it? You mentioned private cloud but just sort of cloud experience, but at the edge. >> Yeah. We try to keep everything at the edge. It just makes it a lot easier to control. Because we're so big. Think about it like you are bringing all this information back from everywhere. It's a lot of data to come back to one spot. So we're trying to push that more, to keep it at the edge so that we can analyze it right there in the moment instead of having to come back and do it but yeah. And I think you'll see in the next few years, a lot of change to the cloud, I think it'll start to be there, but again, like I said, the private cloud will probably be the way most will go. >> Okay. So I got to ask you then, I mean, you've really tested that agility over the last 60 days with this COVID pandemic. How were you able to respond? What role did data play? You had supply chain considerations. Obviously, you got a lot of online ordering going on. You got to get produce out. You've got social distancing. How were you able to handle that crisis? >> Well it was a really great thing for our team. Our team really came together in a great way. We had a lot of people that did have to go home and we started because we had so many ranges all over, already about a year and a half ago we started implementing an SD-WAN solution to allow us to connect to different areas and to do all kinds of stuff. So it was actually very quick for us to be able to send the others home. We used our VeloCloud SD-WAN to expand it. It was very seamless and we just started sending people home left, right and center. The staff that had to stay here, like the workers out in the greenhouse here now are offshore labor as we call it. They work great. They worked with at every moment of the day and they dug right in. We haven't lost heartbeat. Like actually our orders have gone up in the last... Through this COVID experience more than anything else. And it's really learned... It really helped from an IT perspective and I laugh about this and it's one of the greatest things about what I do, I love this moment, is where sometimes we were very hesitant to jump on this video collaboration. I said, "hey, that's a great way of doing this." But sometimes people they're very stuck in their ways and they love it and they're like, "I don't know about this whole team Zoom "and all that fun stuff," but because of this, they've now embraced it and it's actually really changed the way even they've worked. So in a way, it kind of sped up the processes of us becoming more agile that way in a way that would've taken a long time. They now love teams. They love being able to communicate that way. They love being able to just do a quick call. All that functionality has changed and even made us more efficient that way. (mumbles) >> How does this all affect your IT budget allocation? Did you get more budget? Was it flat budget? Did you have to shift budget to sort of work from home and securing the remote workers? Can you sort of describe that dynamic? >> So it did, I'll be true, there's no way around it to not up my budge. They basically said, "yep, "you have to do what you have to do. "We have to continue to function, "we cannot let our greenhouse go down "and what do you need to do to make it happen?" So I quickly contacted Dell and got things coming and improve our infrastructure as much as we could to get ready. I contacted (mumbles). I basically made it so that my team can support every single part of our facet from home if they actually had to go home. So for example, if I had to get stuck at home, I could do every single part of my job from home, including the growers as much as possible. So say our senior grower had to get home. I locked him up. He has to be able to see everything and do everything. So we actually expanded that very quickly and it was a cost to us. But again, there's no technology we didn't implement that we hadn't talked about before. We just hadn't said, "you know what? It's just not the right time to try that." And now we just went ahead and we just said, we got to do it now. And there's not one part of our aspect that we don't reuse. >> Was Dell able to deliver? Did they have supply constraint issues? I mean, I know there's been huge demand for that whole remote worker. Were able to get what you needed in time? >> Yeah. You know what, I think that we hit it a little ahead of the scope of when things started to go bad, our senior management, our president and all that. He basically said, "you know Keith, "we got to get ready on this. "We got to get some stuff coming." We never ran out of some things. The quirkiest thing and it is just a reality, the biggest thing was webcams was to kind of trying to get webcams. Other than that, there was issues with UPS and Purolator and FedEx because they were just inundated too. But for the most part, we kept everything moving. There wasn't a time that I was actually really waiting on something that we had to have. One of the other great things of our senior team that's here is they've really given me the latitude to say, "what do you need and how do you need to do it?" And so I have my own basically storage area of stuff everywhere. And my team does laugh at me 'cause they call me a hoarder and I basically have too much. And we were able to use either some older stuff or some newer stuff and combine it and we got everything running. There was only a little hiccups here and there but nothing ever is going to go perfect. >> Yeah. But it's enabling business results. We've asked a lot of it pros like yourself like what do you expect the shape of the recovery? And obviously our hearts go out to those small businesses that have been decimated. You're clearly seeing industries like airlines and hospitality and restaurants are obviously in rough shape, but there is a bifurcated story here. Some businesses and it sounds like in this camp where the pandemic was actually a tailwind, your online demand is up, food, vegetables, people... There were a lot of meat shortages. So people really turn to vegetables, is that right? Is that the shape of the recovery actually, is maybe not even V-shape, it's been a tailwind for Nature Fresh Farms. >> Yeah. You know what? It has been a tailwind and that's the right way to say it. We've just increased our yieldage. We've increased that, it's not unnew for us, that's been the biggest driving force for us is basically the demand for our product and building fast enough to keep up to that demand. Like we continually build and expand. We've got more ranges being built in the coming years like looking towards the 21, 22, 23 year. It's just going to just continue to expand and that is purely because of demand. And this COVID just again, escalated that little bit 'cause everybody's like, I really want the peppers and like you learned, we actually do have some tasty peppers and tomatoes. So it does make it a nice little treat to have at home for the kids. >> Well, it's an amazing story of tech meets farming. And as you said for years your industry kind of became quiet when it came to tech, but this is the future of farming, in my opinion. And Keith, thanks so much for coming on the CUBE and sharing the story of Nature Fresh Farms. >> Well, thank you for having me. It's been a great pleasure. >> Alright. We here with this team Cube alumni Von Stuart, vice president technology at pier Storage. Great to see you guys another year, another privilege to sit >> down and have a little chat. >> Another. Another year that Vienna where doesn't die of something storage doesn't go away every year. Containers is going to kill the end where this is revealing. The EM wears resiliency as virtualization platform is just second to none has been, well, document. We've been talking about it because the operational efficiencies of what they've done has been great. You guys air kicking butt in storage on again, a sector that doesn't go away. You gotta put the data somewhere. Eso stores continues toe do Well, Congratulations. What's the big What's the big secret? Thanks. >> Well, we just shared our cue to >> financial results last week. 28% year on your growth. We are the by far the fastest growing storage company, and I think there's a lot of disruption for the legacy vendors. Right now. They're getting hit on all angles. Next. Gen. If vendors like us followed by the cloud as well this platforms like H. C, I think it's been it's been a tough sledding for similar legacy vendors. >> Talk about your relationship with the end, where and why that's been so important for pure because again, again, resiliency operations. At the end of the day, that's what the rubber hits the road, making developers happy, but operating it's a key. Yeah, if you look at >> so that's a really good question. If you look at our business, Veum, where is the number one platform deployed on top of pure storage platforms? And that's probably the case for most of the storage vendors because of their dominant position in the infrastructure. That means, as VM were evolves their product platforms right. Well, that's the pivotal acquisition Veum or Claude Foundation via McLaren AWS. And as that'll expand, you have to as a partner continued to jointly innovate, sometimes hand in hand. Sometimes, you know, on parallel paths to drive value into that that market for those customers or you're not gonna make it. And our investments of engineering wise are significant. We've had a large number of new capability that we've ruled out through the years that are specific to VM, where that are either integrations or enhancements to our platform. You know, we believe through external data points, we are the number one V balls vendor, which is, you know, which was something that being were launched about 78 years back. That kind of dip, but has risen back up. Um, and >> we were key, >> I think, um, design partner right now with the cloud platforms, the Via MacLeod Foundation as well as, ah, humor coordinative us. >> So, as you know, this is our 10th year VM world. You go back to 2010. There was what I used to call the storage cartel. And you weren't part of it, right? Had early access to the AP eyes you had. So obviously e m c was in there. Um, you were really the on lee sort of newbie to reach escape velocity. Your storage. Now there's basically two independent storage companies over a billion dollars. You guys a net up. Um, so >> when I was at both, >> you saw you saw >> the opportunity and okay, leaned in hard. Yeah, there >> was a time when he's >> paid off. But so why do you think, um, you were able to be one of the rare ones to achieve escape velocity when many people said that will never happen. You'll never see another $1,000,000,000 storage company. And then I'm interested in how you're achieving number one in Viv balls. In a world where it seems like, you know, the ecosystem is getting a little tighter between Dow Wand VM where? But how do you guys thrive in that dynamic? >> I think there's a challenge for all vendors in terms of market and try to get your message through right. If you if you one better does something well, the rest of the market tries too obvious. Get that. We've been fortunate enough that through our channel ecosystem, our system's integrator partners right to actually be able to demonstrate the technology that gain there enthusiasm to drive it into the market and then actually demonstrated to the customers. And so how does that show up? Uh, I think it's fair to say our platforms are more intelligent, they're more automated and they they operated a greater scale. Then then the competitors and you can look at this through one lens and say, Well, it's Veum or a P I says in that Make all the storage the same And it's like it does from a via more operational standpoint, but it doesn't mean how you deliver on that value Prop or what us. A platform deliver above and beyond is at parody, and that's really where we demonstrate a significant difference. Let me give you one example. We have a lot of customers. Ah, a lot customer growth in the last 12 months around Custer's who are deploying eight c i, along with all flash raise. Right? And David Floyd had reached out recently and said, Well, wouldn't one, you know, compete with the other? It's like, Yes, there's overlap. But what we're finding from customers is they're looking to say if my applications need to be more cost effective, easy to manage its scale, we actually want to put it on all flash rain, You say, How could that be? I'll give you one simply example. Do you know what it takes anywhere from 10 x 200 x, less time to upgrade your V and where infrastructure on a shared array. Then if it's on on hyper converged because you don't have to go through the evacuation and rehydration of all your data twice right? And so things like that, they're just really simple that you wouldn't pick up in like a marketing scheme. If you are a customer at scale, you go well. I can't afford 100 man hours. I can afford woman. And so it's It's simple things like that. It's rapid provisioning. It's not having Silas that are optimized for performance or availability or cost. It's about saying, you know your time to implement is one time life cycle on hardware. But it's probably something happens every quarter for the next three years, right? >> So this is your point about >> innovation in the innovative vendors. Your the modernization of storage is planning for these use cases where the old way didn't work. >> Yeah, yeah, you mentioned that you were 10 years now, and one of things that I've said over the last six or seven years being up yours, one of things I think is really interesting about pure is that our founder, John Call Grove, came out of the volume manager and file system space at Veritas, right? He was the founder for those products. He understood the intersection between managing a storage array and your application, and that goes through our ethos of our products, where I think a lot of storage platforms, a start up platforms come from George guys who worked on the Harbour side. And so they take a faster, you know, Piper faster from the media, and they make another box that behaves like the other box from an operational perspective. >> So he said, a C I a compliment or competitors. I'm still not sure which. Maybe it's both and then say, Same question for V. San. Yeah, how do you So, >> um, on air that we've put a lot of investment in and started one with via more around the middle of last year was putting V sand with pure storage flash race together, and what you see that materialized now is when you look at via MacLeod Foundation or via MacLeod in eight of us. The management domains must be visa, and that's so that you can have an instant out of the box controlled, um, management plane that Veum where you know, executes on and then you have workload domains and those could be on ah, hyper converge platform. Or they could be on third party storage. And when you put those on pure, then you again, all the advantages that we bring to bear as an infrastructure with all the same simplicity scale in lifecycle management that you get from from just, you know, the VM where std see manager. And so it works very well together. Now, look, I'm sure what I share with you here. They'll be some folks who are on the V sand team that they themselves are to be like, you know, B s. But that's the nature of our business. One >> of these I want to get your thoughts on this side. Vons. You've always >> been kind of on the cutting edge on all the conversations we've had. I gotta ask you about the container revolution, which not new doctor came out many many years ago. Jerry Chen when he funded those guys and we covered that extensively upset there was a small changed kubernetes is all the rage orchestrating the containers is a pivotal role in all the action happening here. It's big part of how things were with the app side. So the question is, how does continues impact the storage world? How do you see that being integrated in? There's talk of putting Cooper names on bare metal, so you start to see HC. I come back. Devices are important, she started. See hardware become important again with that? >> Well, I love you. Drop of pivotal there, right? First off, kudos to Vienna, where for the acquisition pill, little guys are exceptional. What they don't have is a lot of customers, but the customers they do have our large customers, right? So we've got a fair amount of pivotal on pure customers, and they are all at scale. So I think it's a great acquisition for VM, where by by far the most enterprise class form of containers today, >> and they've always kind of been the fold. Now they're officially in the fold. Yes, formalize it. >> And so now that the road map that was shared in terms of what via Moore looks to do to integrate containers into the Essex I platform itself right, it's managing V, EMS and containers next year. That's perfect in terms of not having customers have to pick or choose between which platform and where you're going to play something, allow them to say you can deploy on whichever format you want. It runs in the same ecosystem and management, and then that trickles down to the gun in your storage layer. So we do a lot of object storage within the container ecosystems. Today, a lot of high performance objects because you know the file sizes of instances or applications is much larger than you know, a document filed that you or I might create online. So there's a big need around performance in that space, along with again management at scale. It's >> interesting we sent about about Pivotal and I, By the way, I like the acquisition, too, because I think it was cheap. Any time you can pick up $4 billion asset for 800 million in cash, you know gets my attention. But Pivotal was struggling in the marketplace. The stock price never even came close to its I po. You know, it's spending patterns were down. Do you feel as though the integration will VM Where will supercharge Pivotal? >> I absolutely agree that I've had this view that the container ecosystem was really, um uh, segmented you had comes that built their products off a container. So save your twitter or your Facebook, right? The platform that your customers and interact interact with is all ran by containers. Then you have an enterprise. You have containers, which was more kind of classic applications. Right? And that would take time for the applications to be deployed. And so what did you see now for Mike stuff, right? See if you can run as a container. Right? Run is a container. As the enterprise app start to roll over, the enterprise will start to evolve from virtual machines, two containers. And so I think it's the timing's right. That's not to dismiss any of where people I think is built the brand right now, which is helping companies build next gen platforms. You know, after big sure that I don't name drop customers references to pull back there. Yeah, I think the time is right. >> I'm interested in how you guys can further capitalized on containers. And we've been playing around with this notion of of data assurance containers, Fring complexity. And so, you know, complexities oftentimes your friend, because you're all about simplifying complexity. But so how do you capitalize on this container trend in the next 3 to 5 years? So you've got storage >> needs for containers that either tend to be ephemeral or persistent. And I think when containers were virtually created, it was always this notion that would be ephemeral. And it's like, Yeah, but where's the data reside? Ultimately, there's been significant growth around data persistence, and we've driven that in terms of leveraging the flecks of all drivers that have been put into the community, driving that into our pure service orchestrator RPS O'Toole, which supports pivotal in kubernetes derivatives. Today again, we've got proven large scale installs on this. So it's it's, um, it's providing the same class of storage. Service is simplicity and elegance in your integrations that we have for Vienna, where we've been doing that across pivotal already. Pivotals. Interesting, right? They don't validate hardware, the only validate software. So they validate our P S O and having that same value prop for that that infrastructure, because they are scale, you never find a small scale containers ecosystem, and I keep referencing that point when you get to scale considerations around. What does it take to allow that environment to to remain online and holly performance are significant considerations and weak cell >> There. We'll talk about your event coming up. You guys have pierced accelerate September 17th and 18th Coming up Osti the VM where ecosystem that you're part of here. Big part of that. You guys have a lot of customers. I know you can reveal any news, but what's expected at this show? What can people who are interested in either attending or my peach in some of the notable things that might be happening >> lot orange? We know that >> one. Number two I know the cubes gonna be there >> for two days will be there for two days. >> So hopefully you guys will get a load of conversations with both our our team, product management, engineering, maybe some of leadership, but also customers. I think customers are always the best statement you can make about how your how you're doing and market. I think you will see from us a number of announcements that I am prohibited to share today, but some really big things that we're gonna introduce the market. So it should be excited for that. And some just a great showing of our partner. Our alliance ecosystem will be there. Obviously, VM will be there in force as well as red hat with the open >> again, there's gonna be a cloudy >> future for you. It's girls would be very analytical. It's going to be there elastics going to be there. So, you know, >> you guys like to do first of these shows. I mean, kind of I don't view it first with an all flesh array, but probably one of the first if not first the evergreen thing ticked off a lot of people like, Why didn't we think of that? You were first with sort of bundling envy. Any in the whole thing. The announcement you guys made with video. That was before anybody else. Ashutosh Mooney, vice president, Applications services with an IBM and carried to lose chief technology officer nationwide Building society in the UK Great to have you guys. Thank you, John, for applications. Big part of the focus because the applications air now dictating the data strategy. The II with a and you could cloud multi cloud underneath. So the chained, changing market requirements around what, after doing are super important? All this is a focus. It's dictating that the infrastructure what to do so that this is the key to the cloud. Talk about what you guys are doing. >> Absolutely, absolutely, in fact, not just for IBM. For clients, mostly for them to be able to ready for their customers, they need to make sure that their applications are up there for their customer experience as well. What we're seeing is most of these supper clients today are saying that all the work that they have done in past for the last five, ten years that's the core that they have been in there trying to look at how they can minimize the spend on that and maximize the spending a ll. The customer facing applications like to enhance the customer experience >> they call and you call that the workload? Oh, yes. Load is code for applications. Carry your customer of IBM. Let me explain what you guys do first. Then we can talk about some things you're working on, >> So we are a large, UK based mutual building society. We have about fifteen million members in the U. K. But you can think of us as a bank. In many respects, most people do. Challenge throws us, as you said, is basically we have thirty or forty years of legacy technology. We need to transform that technology and also bill the next generation digital services alongside that technology. So if Rose, it's the combination of how do we transform that legacy core whilst also building from you? >> And what are some of the use case is that the new technology going bring you because containers has been great with legacy because you don't kill the old to bring in the new. As you look at the modern modernization journey, you're on What is guiding principles? One things you guys are looking at, how you guys thinking that through? >> Okay, so a number of things. One is we've been on a thirty year journey towards looser and looser coupling on smaller and smaller micro services. So what you're starting to see is big applications, monolithic applications being broken down into services and the micro services. So for us, the key is the smaller and smaller micro services. The more agility we can create more value great. And that loose coupling them becomes really important because that then allows us to deliver a high level of parallelism in development in change. So those are two key areas. >> It has it going today. Good scar tissue. You learning its >> learning and its iterating and it's failing and its understanding. But the main thing is, you know, the more we do, the more we learn, the more we can then build that back into Nick's situation. >> Actually, I always love to hear, especially the financial services ones that have been around a while that that modernization and how they do that, I couldn't help but notice. You're both wearing the, you know, I heart a I the shirts. So if you connect the dots for us between that application modernization and the wave of a ay >> yeah. So I heard that Tom fail fast and fail regular. I mean, it's all good until you actually have atleast one success, right? Failing fast is good, but you cannot escape feeling. So where it comes into play is primarily making sure that you're basing your those decisions on what have been proven right in Pastor's. Well, so what we have seen, especially for financial services, is even though the system's off engagement has changed the fundamental principles on which the banking services all the insurance services operator has not changed. So you're still wearing the same set of services just in different ways. The expectation of the client has changed, but the services remain the same. So our ability to be ableto look at what we have been doing in past which services makes sense to be Microsoft's enabled us getting talked about. It's not that you just take all the functions and enable them. That's where we're able to bring value Tour Kari. What's the impact >> on this on your ultimate and user >> better value? So for us, it's about helping our members, who are customers, to make better financial decisions on. To do that, they need data. So what we're trying to do is to really take that Legacy estate, which is really about locking data into the course. Or we can use it trying to liberate that day to get it out into the hands of our members so they could make better decisions on a eyes were really keep part of >> you. I mean that that was what we think back to. That wave of big data was the I should be able to have smaller companies, you know, not take years and millions of dollars to be able to do that. Tell us what's different about, you know today in a I that that we might not have been able to do five years >> ago. There's a couple of things, really. So one is compute power. So what you're seeing really is eyes is not necessarily advancing massively in terms of the algorithms and the approaches in the methodologies. What you're seeing, though, is compute power in storage capacity growing at an exponential rate store. So what it's doing is enabling those algorithms to work in a way that they've never been able to do before. We're getting to value quicker because the time it takes to reach that value is much shorter. >> I want to get your perspective on you mentioned parallel breaking down, decoupling things with looser sets the services. This is certainly the cloud way make AP eyes have micro services. Big part of it. How is that going from a culture standpoint? Because this is one of the things we hear all the time is it's a cultural journey to one. Get people lined up with that. And then what if some of the business benefits that you see what this parallel isn't? His efficiency is an innovation. Where do you see that culture? What did What did you do to change the culture? Go. Cheers. Um, this is what people want to know about. >> So in fact, what we're seeing is a majority of the clients have started to look into this because everybody else was because somebody digital native out there was doing it, so they some of them actually last on too quickly. They have not been ableto change their internal culture within the organization when the customers were ready, but their internal organizations or not. But I think plants like Cup NBS have sought out a fairly good strategy, and it will be great to get if you can >> share with your secret sauce that you like Carrot Stick. They were gonna go this way or you burn the boats, as they say at the How did you get people to go in the right direction? >> For us? There's a really, really important related past this the culture of the people from a culture perspective. You know, we've got teams of people who have been doing phenomenal pieces of work for thirty forty years coming to the end of their career. And you know, the technology that we're using again, we're looking at and the service life. So how do we how do we get away from that world where we're constantly focusing on the legacy to start focusing on new technology? So it's bringing in new people with new ideas. It's changing the way we work, so we started to focus on things like our child. They've ops, automation, new ways of working to allow people to really sort of liberate away from the old ways of working and give them new ideas and new opportunities. That's part of that as well. There's a couple of things in there for us which is really important. So one is bringing new technologies in bringing new people in that Khun, use those technologies. We also have to make sure we keep our own people trained up as well, so we can't forget the people that we've got. So it's it's a set of different things, >> and training is critical. Was gonna open source out there. It's like, you know, every years like a dog here, and you gotta keep up to date, Keep learning >> and all these aspects of procreation, right? So you cannot do it in isolation if you're doing it together. I mean, whether use design, thinking or not right, that's it. That's it. That's the way to do it. But I think the aspect of co creating in your end stakeholders and your own stakeholders, Orin more >> talk about more about that, cause this is a big team co creation we love doing with content were in the Q. We're doing it here with constant when you get into development. This is a new psychological dynamic, but also it's a productivity opportunity. Can you share what you're seeing there? Explain co creation a litte bit deeper >> Look so that we talk hypothetically, right? So from hypothetical perspective, if we were able to look at organization or a flat form where were able to access an amount ofthe computational power computation skills are programming skills. Our ability to be able to do the most creative expects for any use case and industry would be enormous. We just don't have that. We're limited to specific parts that were working with the Limited with specific employees that we have Andrea limited to the customers that were kids, and I think if we expand, so while we don't have, uh, handle off all the things that we haven't played. But if you are able to bring in our customers or internal stakeholders as well as our partners that we're working with and are able to build a common team and one of those common themes could be that I need to get you those services quickly and then figure out how to three can actually work in tandem we'll be able to make. >> How does that change your engagement model? Because I might be the same in eight days there, Miss Captain. Well, we used to do that before we usedto partner and understand their needs Bring solutions to the marketplace. Is it more software driven? So what's changed from the old way to the new way? Because I don't agree with you, by the way, I'm not I'm not a skeptic, but, yeah, that was what skeptic might say. >> Yeah, no, I think earlier what was happening was they were It was more offering leg and what I mean by offering letters these of the sex I have. And let's make these assets find the solutions. So what people will do is they will say this is the banking solution I have in this specific case and let's figure out what fifteen things I can >> do without those solutions. >> Approach now is different. They approach now is This is what the customer is demanding and the reason they're demanding is because customers expectation is based on there most recent experience that they had somewhere else, not necessarily with the bank. They may have experience and over, so when they have experienced that experience there, they want the similar services from the bank. So now the co creation model is actually starting from the other side of the equation rather than coming from Essex out. That's >> so it's flipped. The old model was hears. We got here's what you could do, Your limited and now it's like is what we want to do >> This ice >> program the infrastructure and focus on software to find agile. This is seems to be the new way. >> Let me add to that as well, because I think one of the things that we've done over the last year is really focusing on what our technology strategy, how this technology going change. Our business we've done is created a strategy where our ambition actually exceeds our ability to execute. So from a co creation perspective, we actually need really good partners are going to work with us in that context on be strong challenges br critical friend in the process. >> So it's more efficient and more productive. You get best of both worlds and the outcomes are more aligned via agile. Got me more acute on target. Many pretty much that >> getting Carrie actually love to get your perspective on like, what does it mean to have a cloud strategy today? We heard this week. You know, Jenny said, We're, you know, entering chapter to of the clouds. We took care of the twenty percent that was a little bit easier. We're getting eighty harder. Lots of customers I talked to. It's It's changing all the time, and things like hybrid and multi Cloud don't really mean much to them. Got serious in your shop, how you think of things. >> Great question. I think it's changing, and it's different from industry to industry. So I'm banking. The challenge for us has always been regulation has been the regulators pushing back on public cloud and saying, You know, we were nervous about that. Have you manage the security of the controls around that? So a lot of banking is focused on private Cloud? Can we adopt the technology in those banking's those styles of technology delivery in the private cloud way? But we're now starting to see that there is this shift towards public cloud with the economic advantage that public cloud house on the innovation that's going on in public cloud. It's becoming really attractive. So the strategy for us is about how do we make that happen? How do we build that multi cloud model? And then how do we move that sort of hybrid model from private to public and get the advantages of the different styles of cloud computing? >> Guys, Thanks for coming on, Given the inside love, this Dev ops Co creation model and really applications air driving the requirements now with programmable infrastructure. This is changing. The procurement is changing. The culture hiring strategist is really disrupted. This is really the digital transformation. It's all about creating great shop. Thanks for coming on.
