I'm your host, Rebecca Knight, along with my co-host John Furrier. We're joined by Clement Pang. He is the co-founder of Wavefront by VMware. Welcome. >> Thank you Thank you so much. >> It's great to have you on the show. So, I want you tell our viewers a little bit about Wavefront. You were just purchased by VMware in May. >> Right. >> What do you do, what is Wavefront all about? >> Sure, we were actually purchased last year in May by VMware, yeah. We are an operational analytics company, so monitoring, I think is you could say what we do. And the way that I always introduce Wavefront is kind of a untold secret of Silicon Valley. The reason I said that is because in the, well, just look at the floor. You know, there's so many monitoring companies doing logs, APM, metrics monitoring. And if you really want to look at what do the companies in the Valley really use, right? I'm talking about companies such as Workday, Watts, Groupon, Intuit, DoorDash, Lyft, they're all companies that are customers of Wavefront today. So they've obviously looked at all the tools that are available on the market, on the show floor, and they've decided to be with Wavefront, and they were with us before the acquisition, and they're still with us today, so. >> And they're the scale-up guys, they have large scale >> That's right, yeah, container, infrastructure, running clouds, hybrid clouds. Some of them are still on-prem data centers and so we just gobble up all that data. We are platform, we're not really opinionated about how you get the data. >> You call them hardcore devops. >> Yes, hardcore devops is the right word, yeah. >> Pushing the envelope, lot of new stuff. >> That's right. >> Doing their own innovation >> So even serverless and all the ML stuff that that's been talked about. They're very pioneering. >> Alright, so VMware, they're very inquisitive on technology, very technology buyers. Take a minute to explain the tech under the covers. What's going on. >> Sure, so Wavefront is a at scale time series database with an analytics engine on top of it. So we have actually since expanded beyond just time series data. It could be distributed histograms, it could be tracing, it includes things like events. So anything that you could gather up from your operation stack and application metrics, business metrics, we'll take that data. Again, I just said that we are unopinionated so any data that you have. Like sometimes it could be from a script , it could be from your serverless functions. We'll take that data, we'll store it, we'll render it and visualize it and of course we don't have people looking at charts all day long. We'll alert you if something bad is going on. So teams just really allow the ability to explore the data and just to figure out trends, correlations and just have a platform that scales and just runs reliably. >> With you is Switzerland. >> Yeah, basically I think that's the reason why VMware is very interested, is cause we work with AWS, work with Azure, work with GCP and soon to be AliCloud and IBM, right. >> Talk about why time series data is now more on board. We've got, we've had this conversation with Smug, we saw the new announcement by Amazon. So 'cause if you 're doing real-time, time matters and super important. Why is it important now, why are people coming to the realization as the early adopters, the pioneers. >> That's right, I think I used to work at Google and I think Google, very early on I realized that time series is a way to understand complex systems, especially if you have FMR workloads and so I think what companies have realized is that logs is just very voluminous, it's very difficulty to wield and then traditional APM products, they tend to just show you what they want to show you, like what are the important paying points that you should be monitoring and with Wavefront, it's just a tool that understands time series data and if you think about it, most of the data that you gather out of your operational environment is timer series data. CPU, memory, network, how many people logging in, how many errors, how many people are signing up. We certainly have our customer like Lyft. You know, how many of you are getting Rise, how many credit cards are off. You know all of that information drives, should we pay someone because a certain city, nobody is getting picked up and that's kind of the dimension that you want to be monitoring on, not on the individual like, okay this base, no network even though we monitor those of course. >> You know, Clement, I got to talk to you about the supporting point because we've been covering real time, we've been covering IoT, we've been doing a ton of stuff around looking at the importance of data and having data be addressable in real-time. And the database is part of the problem and also the overall architecture of the holistic operating environment. So to have an actual understanding of time series is one. Then you actually got to operationalize it. Talk about how customers are implementing and getting value out of time series data and how they differentiate that with data leagues that they might spin up as well as the new dupe data in it. Some might not be valuable. All this is like all now coming together. How do people do that? >> So I think there were a couple of dimensions to that. So it's scalability is a big piece. So you have to be able to take in enormous amount of data, (mumbles) data leagues can do that. It has to be real-time, so our latency from ingestion to maturalization on a chart is under our second So if you're a devops team, you're spinning up containers, you can't go blind for even 10 seconds or else you don't know what's going on with your new service that you just launched. So real-time is super important and then there's analytics. So you can't, you can see all the data in real-time but if it's like millions of time series coming in, it's like the matrix, you need to have some way to actually gather some insights out of that data. SO I think that's what we are good at. >> You know a couple of years ago, we were doing Open Compute, a summit that Facebook puts on, you eventually worked with Google so I see he's talking about the cutting edge tech companies. There's so much data going onto the scale, you need AI, you got to have machines so some of the processing, you can't have this manual process or even scrips, you got to have machines that take care of it. Talk about the at-scale component because as the tsunami of data continues to grow, I mean Amazon's got a satellite, Lockheed Martin, that's going to light up edge computing, autonomous vehicles, pentabytes moving to the cloud, time series matters. How do people start thinking about machine learning and AI, what do you guys do. >> So I think post-acquisition I would say, we really double down on looking at AI and machine learning in our system. We, because we don't down sample any of the data that we collect, we have actually the raw data coming in from weather sensors, from machines, from infrastructure, from cloud and we just is able to learn on that because we understand incidence, we understand anomalies. So we can take all of that data and punch it through different kinds of algorithms and figures out, maybe we could just have the computer look at the incoming time series data and tell you if its anomalist, right. The holy grail for VMware I think, is to have a self-driving data center and what that means is you have systems that understands, well yesterday there was a reinforcement learning announcement by Amazon. How do we actually apply those techniques so that we have the observability piece and then we have some way to in fact change against the environment and then we figure out, you know, just let the computer just do it. >> I love this topic, you should come into our studio, if I'm allowed to, we'll do a deep dive on this because there's so many implications to the data because if you have real-time data, you got to have the streaming data come in, you got to make sense of it. The old networking days, we call it differentiate services. You got to differentiate of the data. Machine learning, if the data's good, it works great, but data sucks, machine learning doesn't go well so if I want that dynamic of managing the data so you don't have to do all this cleaning. How do people get that data verified, how do they set up the machine learning. >> Sure, it still required clean data because I mean, it's garbage in, garbage out >> Not dirty data >> So, but the ability for us, for machine learning in general to understand anything in a high dimensional space is for it to figure out, what are the signals from a lot of the noise. A human may require to be reduces in dimensionality so that they could understand a single line, a single chart that they could actually have insights out of. Machines can technically look at hundreds or even tens of thousands of series and figures out, okay these are the two that are the signals and these are the knobs that I could turn that could affect those signals. So I think with machine learning, it actually helps with just the voluminous nature of the data that we're gathering. And figuring out what is the signal from the noise. >> It's a hard problem. So talk about the two functionalities you guys just launched. What's the news, what are you doing here at AWS. >> So the most exciting thing that we launched is our distributed tracing offering. We call it a three-dimensional micro service observability. So we're the only platform that marry metrics, histograms and distributed tracing in a single platform offering. So it's certainly at scale. As I said, it's reliable, it has all the analytical capabilities on top of it, but we basically give you a way to quickly dive down into a problem and realize what the root cause is and to actually see the actual request at it's context. Whether it's troubleshooting , root cause analysis, performance optimization. So it's a single shop kind of experience. You put in our SDK, it goes ahead and figures out, okay you're running Java, you're running Jersey or Job Wizard or Spring Boot and then it figures out, okay these are the key metrics you should be looking at. If there are any violations, we show you the actual request including multiple services that are involved in that request and just give you an out of the box turn keyway to understand at scale, microservice deployments, where are the pain points, where is latency coming from, where are the errors coming from. So that's kind of our first offering that we're launching. Same pricing mode, all that. >> So how are companies going to use this? What kind of business problem is this solving. >> So as the world transitions to a deployment architecture that mostly consists of Microservices, it's no longer a monolytic app, it's no longer an end-tier application. There are a lot of different heterogeneous languages, frameworks are involved, or even AWS. Cloud services, SAS services are involved and you just have to have some way to understand what is goin on. The classic example I have is you could even trace things like an actual order and how it goes through the entire pipeline. Someone places the orders, a couple days later there's someone who, the orders actually get shipped and then it gets delivered. You know, that's technically a trace. It could be that too. You could send that trace to us but you want to understand, so what are the different pieces that was involved. It could be code or it could be like a vendor. I could be like even a human process. All of that is a distributed tracing atom and you could actually send it to Wavefront and we just help you stitch that picture together so you could understand what's really going on. >> What's next for you guys. Now you're part of VMware. What's the investment area, what are you guys looking at building, what's the next horizon? >> So I think, obviously the (mumbles) tracing, we still have a lot to work on and just to help teams figure out, what do they want to see kind of instantly from the data that we've gathered. Again, we just have gathered data for so long, for so many years and at the full resolution so why can't we, what insights can develop out of it and then as I said, we're working on AI and ML so that's kind of the second launch offering that we have here where you know, people have been telling us, it's great to have all the analytics but if I don't have any statistical background to anything like that, can you just tell me, like, I have a chart, a whole bunch of lines, tell me just what I should be focusing on. So that's what we call the AI genie and so you just apply, call it a genie I guess, and then you would basically just have the chart show you what is going wrong and the machines that are going wrong, or maybe a particular service that's going wrong, a particular KPI that's in violation and you could just go there and figure out what's-- >> Yeah, the genie in the bottle. >> That's right (crosstalk) >> So final question before we go. What's it like working for VMware start-up culture. You raised a lot of money doing your so crunch based reports. VMware's cutting edge, they're a part with Amazon, bit turn around there, what's it like there? >> It's a very large company obviously, but they're, obviously as with everything, there's always some good points and bad points. I'll focus on the good. So the good things are there's just a lot of people, very smart people at VMware. They've worked on the problem of virtualization which was, as a computer scientist, I just thought, that's just so hard. How do you run it like the matrix, right, it's kind of like and a lot of very smart people there. A lot of the stuff that we're actually launching includes components that were built inside VMware based on their expertise over the years and we're just able to pull, it's just as I said, a lot of fun toys and how do we connect all of that together and just do an even better job than what we could have been as we were independent. >> Well congratulations on the acquisition. VMware's got the radio event we've covered. >>Hello. And we're here at the cube startup showcase made possible by a Ws. Thanks so much for joining us today. You know when Jim McDaid Ghani was formulating her ideas around data mesh, She wasn't the only one thinking about decentralized data architecture. Hello, Fresh was going into hyper growth mode and realized that in order to support its scale, it needed to rethink how it thought about data. Like many companies that started in the early part of last decade, Hello Fresh relied on a monolithic data architecture and the internal team. It had concerns about its ability to support continued innovation at high velocity. The company's data team began to think about the future and work backwards from a target architecture which possessed many principles of so called data mesh even though they didn't use that term. Specifically, the company is a strong example of an early but practical pioneer of data mission. Now there are many practitioners and stakeholders involved in evolving the company's data architecture, many of whom are listed here on this on the slide to are highlighted in red are joining us today, we're really excited to welcome into the cube Clements cheese, the Global Senior Director for Data at Hello Fresh and christoph Nevada who's the Global Senior Director of data also, of course. Hello Fresh folks. Welcome. Thanks so much for making some time today and sharing your story. >>Thank you very much. Hey >>steve. All right, let's start with Hello Fresh. You guys are number one in the world in your field, you deliver hundreds of millions of meals each year to many, many millions of people around the globe. You're scaling christoph. Tell us a little bit more about your company and its vision. >>Yeah. Should I start or Clements maybe maybe take over the first piece because Clements has actually been a longer trajectory yet have a fresh. >>Yeah go ahead. Climate change. I mean yes about approximately six years ago I joined handle fresh and I didn't think about the startup I was joining would eventually I. P. O. And just two years later and the freshman public and approximately three years and 10 months after. Hello fresh was listed on the German stock exchange which was just last week. Hello Fresh was included in the Ducks Germany's leading stock market index and debt to mind a great great milestone and I'm really looking forward and I'm very excited for the future for the future for head of fashion. All our data. Um the vision that we have is to become the world's leading food solution group and there's a lot of attractive opportunities. So recently we did lounge and expand Norway. This was in july and earlier this year we launched the U. S. Brand green >>chef in the U. K. As >>well. We're committed to launch continuously different geographies in the next coming years and have a strong pipe ahead of us with the acquisition of ready to eat companies like factor in the U. S. And the planned acquisition of you foods in Australia. We're diversifying our offer now reaching even more and more untapped customer segments and increase our total addressable market. So by offering customers and growing range of different alternatives to shop food and consumer meals. We are charging towards this vision and the school to become the world's leading integrated food solutions group. >>Love it. You guys are on a rocket ship, you're really transforming the industry and as you expand your tam it brings us to sort of the data as a as a core part of that strategy. So maybe you guys could talk a little bit about your journey as a company specifically as it relates to your data journey. You began as a start up. You had a basic architecture like everyone. You made extensive use of spreadsheets. You built a Hadoop based system that started to grow and when the company I. P. O. You really started to explode. So maybe describe that journey from a data perspective. >>Yes they saw Hello fresh by 2015 approximately had evolved what amount of classical centralized management set up. So we grew very organically over the years and there were a lot of very smart people around the globe. Really building the company and building our infrastructure. Um This also means that there were a small number of internal and external sources. Data sources and a centralized the I team with a number of people producing different reports, different dashboards and products for our executives for example of our different operations teams, christian company's performance and knowledge was transferred um just via talking to each other face to face conversations and the people in the data where's team were considered as the data wizard or as the E. T. L. Wizard. Very classical challenges. And those et al. Reserves indicated the kind of like a silent knowledge of data management. Right? Um so a central data whereas team then was responsible for different type of verticals and different domains, different geographies and all this setup gave us to the beginning the flexibility to grow fast as a company in 2015 >>christoph anything that might add to that. >>Yes. Um Not expected to that one but as as clement says it right, this was kind of set up that actually work for us quite a while. And then in 2017 when L. A. Freshman public, the company also grew rapidly and just to give you an idea how that looked like. As was that the tech department self actually increased from about 40 people to almost 300 engineers And the same way as a business units as Clemens has described, also grew sustainable, sustainably. So we continue to launch hello fresh and new countries launching brands like every plate and also acquired other brands like much of a factor and with that grows also from a data perspective the number of data requests that centrally we're getting become more and more and more and also more and more complex. So that for the team meant that they had a fairly high mental load. So they had to achieve a very or basically get a very deep understanding about the business. And also suffered a lot from this context switching back and forth, essentially there to prioritize across our product request from our physical product, digital product from the physical from sorry, from the marketing perspective and also from the central reporting uh teams. And in a nutshell this was very hard for these people. And this that also to a situation that, let's say the solution that we have became not really optimal. So in a nutshell, the central function became a bottleneck and slowdown of all the innovation of the company. >>It's a classic case, isn't it? I mean Clements, you see you see the central team becomes a bottleneck and so the lines of business, the marketing team salesman's okay, we're going to take things into our own hands. And then of course I I. T. And the technical team is called in later to clean up the mess. Uh maybe, I mean was that maybe I'm overstating it, but that's a common situation, isn't it? >>Yeah. Uh This is what exactly happened. Right. So um we had a bottleneck, we have the central teams, there was always a little of tension um analytics teams then started in this business domains like marketing, trade chain, finance, HR and so on. Started really to build their own data solutions at some point you have to get the ball rolling right and then continue the trajectory um which means then that the data pipelines didn't meet the engineering standards. And um there was an increased need for maintenance and support from central teams. Hence over time the knowledge about those pipelines and how to maintain a particular uh infrastructure for example left the company such that most of those data assets and data sets are turned into a huge step with decreasing data quality um also decrease the lack of trust, decreasing transparency. And this was increasing challenge where majority of time was spent in meeting rooms to align on on data quality for example. >>Yeah. And and the point you were making christoph about context switching and this is this is a point that Jemaah makes quite often is we've we've we've contextualized are operational systems like our sales systems, our marketing system but not our our data system. So you're asking the data team, Okay. Be an expert in sales, be an expert in marketing, be an expert in logistics, be an expert in supply chain and it start stop, start, stop, it's a paper cut environment and it's just not as productive. But but on the flip side of that is when you think about a centralized organization you think, hey this is going to be a very efficient way, a cross functional team to support the organization but it's not necessarily the highest velocity, most effective organizational structure. >>Yeah, so so I agree with that. Is that up to a certain scale, a centralized function has a lot of advantages, right? That's clear for everyone which would go to some kind of expert team. However, if you see that you actually would like to accelerate that and specific and this hyper growth, right, you wanna actually have autonomy and certain teams and move the teams or let's say the data to the experts in these teams and this, as you have mentioned, right, that increases mental load and you can either internally start splitting your team into a different kind of sub teams focusing on different areas. However, that is then again, just adding another peace where actually collaboration needs to happen busy external sees, so why not bridging that gap immediately and actually move these teams and to end into into the function themselves. So maybe just to continue what, what was Clements was saying and this is actually where over. So Clements, my journey started to become one joint journey. So Clements was coming actually from one of these teams to build their own solutions. I was basically having the platform team called database housed in these days and in 2019 where basically the situation become more and more serious, I would say so more and more people have recognized that this model doesn't really scale In 2019, basically the leadership of the company came together and I identified data as a key strategic asset and what we mean by that, that if we leverage data in a proper way, it gives us a unique competitive advantage which could help us to, to support and actually fully automated our decision making process across the entire value chain. So what we're, what we're trying to do now or what we should be aiming for is that Hello, Fresh is able to build data products that have a purpose. We're moving away from the idea. Data is just a by problem products, we have a purpose why we would like to collect this data. There's a clear business need behind that. And because it's so important to for the company as a business, we also want to provide them as a trust versi asset to the rest of the organization. We say there's the best customer experience, but at least in a way that users can easily discover, understand and security access high quality data. >>Yeah, so and and and Clements, when you c J Maxx writing, you see, you know, she has the four pillars and and the principles as practitioners you look at that say, okay, hey, that's pretty good thinking and then now we have to apply it and that's and that's where the devil meets the details. So it's the four, you know, the decentralized data ownership data as a product, which we'll talk about a little bit self serve, which you guys have spent a lot of time on inclement your wheelhouse which is which is governance and a Federated governance model. And it's almost like if you if you achieve the first two then you have to solve for the second to it almost creates a new challenges but maybe you could talk about that a little bit as to how it relates to Hello fresh. >>Yes. So christophe mentioned that we identified economic challenge beforehand and for how can we actually decentralized and actually empower the different colleagues of ours. This was more a we realized that it was more an organizational or a cultural change and this is something that somebody also mentioned I think thought words mentioned one of the white papers, it's more of a organizational or cultural impact and we kicked off a um faced reorganization or different phases we're currently and um in the middle of still but we kicked off different phases of organizational reconstruct oring reorganization, try unlock this data at scale. And the idea was really moving away from um ever growing complex matrix organizations or matrix setups and split between two different things. One is the value creation. So basically when people ask the question, what can we actually do, what shall we do? This is value creation and how, which is capability building and both are equal in authority. This actually then creates a high urge and collaboration and this collaboration breaks up the different silos that were built and of course this also includes different needs of stuffing forward teams stuffing with more, let's say data scientists or data engineers, data professionals into those business domains and hence also more capability building. Um Okay, >>go ahead. Sorry. >>So back to Tzemach did johnny. So we the idea also Then crossed over when she published her papers in May 2019 and we thought well The four colors that she described um we're around decentralized data ownership, product data as a product mindset, we have a self service infrastructure and as you mentioned, Federated confidential governance. And this suited very much with our thinking at that point of time to reorganize the different teams and this then leads to a not only organisational restructure but also in completely new approach of how we need to manage data, show data. >>Got it. Okay, so your business is is exploding. Your data team will have to become domain experts in too many areas, constantly contact switching as we said, people started to take things into their own hands. So again we said classic story but but you didn't let it get out of control and that's important. So we actually have a picture of kind of where you're going today and it's evolved into this Pat, if you could bring up the picture with the the elephant here we go. So I would talk a little bit about the architecture, doesn't show it here, the spreadsheet era but christoph maybe you can talk about that. It does show the Hadoop monolith which exists today. I think that's in a managed managed hosting service, but but you you preserve that piece of it, but if I understand it correctly, everything is evolving to the cloud, I think you're running a lot of this or all of it in A W. S. Uh you've got everybody's got their own data sources, uh you've got a data hub which I think is enabled by a master catalog for discovery and all this underlying technical infrastructure. That is really not the focus of this conversation today. But the key here, if I understand it correctly is these domains are autonomous and not only that this required technical thinking, but really supportive organizational mindset, which we're gonna talk about today. But christoph maybe you could address, you know, at a high level some of the architectural evolution that you guys went through. >>Yeah, sure. Yeah, maybe it's also a good summary about the entire history. So as you have mentioned, right, we started in the very beginning with the model is on the operation of playing right? Actually, it wasn't just one model is both to one for the back end and one for the for the front and and or analytical plane was essentially a couple of spreadsheets and I think there's nothing wrong with spreadsheets, right, allows you to store information, it allows you to transform data allows you to share this information. It allows you to visualize this data, but all the kind of that's not actually separating concern right? Everything in one tool. And this means that obviously not scalable, right? You reach the point where this kind of management set up in or data management of isn't one tool reached elements. So what we have started is we've created our data lake as we have seen here on Youtube. And this at the very beginning actually reflected very much our operational populace on top of that. We used impala is a data warehouse, but there was not really a distinction between borders, our data warehouse and borders our data like the impala was used as a kind of those as the kind of engine to create a warehouse and data like construct itself and this organic growth actually led to a situation as I think it's it's clear now that we had to centralized model is for all the domains that will really lose kimball modeling standards. There was no uniformity used actually build in house uh ways of building materialized use abuse that we have used for the presentation layer, there was a lot of duplication of effort and in the end essentially they were missing feedbacks, food, which helped us to to improve of what we are filled. So in the end, in the natural, as we have said, the lack of trust and that's basically what the starting point for us to understand. Okay, how can we move away and there are a lot of different things that you can discuss of apart from this organizational structure that we have said, okay, we have these three or four pillars from from Denmark. However, there's also the next extra question around how do we implement our talking about actual right, what are the implications on that level? And I think that is there's something that we are that we are currently still in progress. >>Got it. Okay, so I wonder if we could talk about switch gears a little bit and talk about the organizational and cultural challenges that you faced. What were those conversations like? Uh let's dig into that a little bit. I want to get into governance as well. >>The conversations on the cultural change. I mean yes, we went through a hyper growth for the last year since obviously there were a lot of new joiners, a lot of different, very, very smart people joining the company which then results that collaboration uh >>got a bit more difficult. Of course >>there are times and changes, you have different different artifacts that you were created um and documentation that were flying around. Um so we were we had to build the company from scratch right? Um Of course this then resulted always this tension which I described before, but the most important part here is that data has always been a very important factor at l a fresh and we collected >>more of this >>data and continued to improve use data to improve the different key areas of our business. >>Um even >>when organizational struggles, the central organizational struggles data somehow always helped us to go through this this kind of change. Right? Um in the end those decentralized teams in our local geography ease started with solutions that serve the business which was very very important otherwise wouldn't be at the place where we are today but they did by all late best practices and standards and I always used sport analogy Dave So like any sport, there are different rules and regulations that need to be followed. These rules are defined by calling the sports association and this is what you can think about data governance and compliance team. Now we add the players to it who need to follow those rules and bite by them. This is what we then called data management. Now we have the different players and professionals, they need to be trained and understand the strategy and it rules before they can play. And this is what I then called data literacy. So we realized that we need to focus on helping our teams to develop those capabilities and teach the standards for how work is being done to truly drive functional excellence in a different domains. And one of our mission of our data literacy program for example is to really empower >>every employee at hello >>fresh everyone to make the right data informs decisions by providing data education that scaled by royal Entry team. Then this can be different things, different things like including data capabilities, um, with the learning paths for example. Right? So help them to create and deploy data products connecting data producers and data consumers and create a common sense and more understanding of each other's dependencies, which is important, for example, S. S. L. O. State of contracts and etcetera. Um, people getting more of a sense of ownership and responsibility. Of course, we have to define what it means, what does ownership means? But the responsibility means. But we're teaching this to our colleagues via individual learning patterns and help them up skill to use. Also, there's shared infrastructure and those self self service applications and overall to summarize, we're still in this progress of of, of learning, we are still learning as well. So learning never stops the tele fish, but we are really trying this um, to make it as much fun as possible. And in the end we all know user behavior has changed through positive experience. Uh, so instead of having massive training programs over endless courses of workshops, um, leaving our new journalists and colleagues confused and overwhelmed. >>We're applying um, >>game ification, right? So split different levels of certification where our colleagues can access, have had access points, they can earn badges along the way, which then simplifies the process of learning and engagement of the users and this is what we see in surveys, for example, where our employees that your justification approach a lot and are even competing to collect Those learning path batteries to become the # one on the leader board. >>I love the game ification, we've seen it work so well and so many different industries, not the least of which is crypto so you've identified some of the process gaps uh that you, you saw it is gloss over them. Sometimes I say paved the cow path. You didn't try to force, in other words, a new architecture into the legacy processes. You really have to rethink your approach to data management. So what what did that entail? >>Um, to rethink the way of data management. 100%. So if I take the example of Revolution, Industrial Revolution or classical supply chain revolution, but just imagine that you have been riding a horse, for example, your whole life and suddenly you can operate a car or you suddenly receive just a complete new way of transporting assets from A to B. Um, so we needed to establish a new set of cross functional business processes to run faster, dry faster, um, more robustly and deliver data products which can be trusted and used by downstream processes and systems. Hence we had a subset of new standards and new procedures that would fall into the internal data governance and compliance sector with internal, I'm always referring to the data operations around new things like data catalog, how to identify >>ownership, >>how to change ownership, how to certify data assets, everything around classical software development, which we know apply to data. This this is similar to a new thinking, right? Um deployment, versioning, QA all the different things, ingestion policies, policing procedures, all the things that suffer. Development has been doing. We do it now with data as well. And in simple terms, it's a whole redesign of the supply chain of our data with new procedures and new processes and as a creation as management and as a consumption. >>So data has become kind of the new development kit. If you will um I want to shift gears and talk about the notion of data product and, and we have a slide uh that we pulled from your deck and I'd like to unpack it a little bit. Uh I'll just, if you can bring that up, I'll read it. A data product is a product whose primary objective is to leverage on data to solve customer problems where customers, both internal and external. So pretty straightforward. I know you've gone much deeper and you're thinking and into your organization, but how do you think about that And how do you determine for instance who owns what? How did you get everybody to agree? >>I can take that one. Um, maybe let me start with the data product. So I think um that's an ongoing debate. Right? And I think the debate itself is an important piece here, right? That visit the debate, you clarify what we actually mean by that product and what is actually the mindset. So I think just from a definition perspective, right? I think we find the common denominator that we say okay that our product is something which is important for the company has come to its value what you mean by that. Okay, it's it's a solution to a customer problem that delivers ideally maximum value to the business. And yes, it leverages the power of data and we have a couple of examples but it had a fresh year, the historical and classical ones around dashboards for example, to monitor or error rates but also more sophisticated ways for example to incorporate machine learning algorithms in our recipe recommendations. However, I think the important aspects of the data product is a there is an owner, right? There's someone accountable for making sure that the product that we are providing is actually served and is maintained and there are, there is someone who is making sure that this actually keeps the value of that problem thing combined with the idea of the proper documentation, like a product description, right that people understand how to use their bodies is about and related to that peace is the idea of it is a purpose. Right? You need to understand or ask ourselves, Okay, why does this thing exist does it provide the value that you think it does. That leads into a good understanding about the life cycle of the data product and life cycle what we mean? Okay from the beginning from the creation you need to have a good understanding, we need to collect feedback, we need to learn about that. We need to rework and actually finally also to think about okay benefits time to decommission piece. So overall, I think the core of the data product is product thinking 11 right that we start the point is the starting point needs to be the problem and not the solution and this is essentially what we have seen what was missing but brought us to this kind of data spaghetti that we have built there in in Russia, essentially we built at certain data assets, develop in isolation and continuously patch the solution just to fulfill these articles that we got and actually these aren't really understanding of the stakeholder needs and the interesting piece as a result in duplication of work and this is not just frustrating and probably not the most efficient way how the company should work. But also if I build the same that assets but slightly different assumption across the company and multiple teams that leads to data inconsistency and imagine the following too narrow you as a management for management perspective, you're asking basically a specific question and you get essentially from a couple of different teams, different kind of grass, different kind of data and numbers and in the end you do not know which ones to trust. So there's actually much more ambiguity and you do not know actually is a noise for times of observing or is it just actually is there actually a signal that I'm looking for? And the same is if I'm running in a B test right, I have a new future, I would like to understand what has it been the business impact of this feature. I run that specific source in an unfortunate scenario. Your production system is actually running on a different source. You see different numbers. What you've seen in a B test is actually not what you see then in production typical thing then is you're asking some analytics tend to actually do a deep dive to understand where the discrepancies are coming from. The worst case scenario. Again, there's a different kind of source. So in the end it's a pretty frustrating scenario and that's actually based of time of people that have to identify the root cause of this divergence. So in a nutshell, the highest degree of consistency is actually achieved that people are just reusing Dallas assets and also in the media talk that we have given right, we we start trying to establish this approach for a B testing. So we have a team but just providing or is kind of owning their target metric associated business teams and they're providing that as a product also to other services including the A B testing team, they'll be testing team can use this information defines an interface is okay I'm joining this information that the metadata of an experiment and in the end after the assignment after this data collection face, they can easily add a graph to the dashboard. Just group by the >>Beatles Hungarian. >>And we have seen that also in other companies. So it's not just a nice dream that we have right. I have actually worked in other companies where we worked on search and we established a complete KPI pipeline that was computing all this information. And this information was hosted by the team and it was used for everything A B test and deep dives and and regular reporting. So uh just one of the second the important piece now, why I'm coming back to that is that requires that we are treating this data as a product right? If you want to have multiple people using the things that I am owning and building, we have to provide this as a trust mercy asset and in a way that it's easy for people to discover and actually work with. >>Yeah. And coming back to that. So this is to me this is why I get so excited about data mesh because I really do think it's the right direction for organizations. When people hear data product they say well, what does that mean? Uh but then when you start to sort of define it as you did, it's it's using data to add value, that could be cutting costs, that could be generating revenue, it could be actually directly you're creating a product that you monetize, So it's sort of in the eyes of the beholder. But I think the other point that we've made is you made it earlier on to and again, context. So when you have a centralized data team and you have all these P NL managers a lot of times they'll question the data because they don't own it. They're like wait a minute. If they don't, if it doesn't agree with their agenda, they'll attack the data. But if they own the data then they're responsible for defending that and that is a mindset change, that's really important. Um And I'm curious uh is how you got to, you know, that ownership? Was it a was it a top down with somebody providing leadership? Was it more organic bottom up? Was it a sort of a combination? How do you decide who owned what in other words, you know, did you get, how did you get the business to take ownership of the data and what is owning? You know, the data actually mean? >>That's a very good question. Dave I think this is one of the pieces where I think we have a lot of learnings and basically if you ask me how we could start the feeling. I think that would be the first piece. Maybe we need to start to really think about how that should be approached if it stopped his ownership. Right? It means somehow that the team has a responsibility to host and self the data efforts to minimum acceptable standards. This minimum dependencies up and down string. The interesting piece has been looking backwards. What what's happening is that under that definition has actually process that we have to go through is not actually transferring ownership from the central team to the distributor teams. But actually most cases to establish ownership, I make this difference because saying we have to transfer ownership actually would erroneously suggests that the data set was owned before. But this platform team, yes, they had the capability to make the changes on data pipelines, but actually the analytics team, they're always the ones who had the business understands, you use cases and but no one actually, but it's actually expensive expected. So we had to go through this very lengthy process and establishing ownership. We have done that, as in the beginning, very naively. They have started, here's a document here, all the data assets, what is probably the nearest neighbor who can actually take care of that and then we we moved it over. But the problem here is that all these things is kind of technical debt, right? It's not really properly documented, pretty unstable. It was built in a very inconsistent over years and these people who have built this thing have already left the company. So there's actually not a nice thing that is that you want to see and people build up a certain resistance, e even if they have actually bought into this idea of domain ownership. So if you ask me these learnings, but what needs to happen as first, the company needs to really understand what our core business concept that they have, they need to have this mapping from. These are the core business concept that we have. These are the domain teams who are owning this concept and then actually link that to the to the assets and integrated better with both understanding how we can evolve actually, the data assets and new data build things new in the in this piece in the domain. But also how can we address reduction of technical death and stabilizing what we have already. >>Thank you for that christoph. So I want to turn a direction here and talk about governance and I know that's an area that's passionate, you're passionate about. Uh I pulled this slide from your deck, which I kind of messed up a little bit sorry for that, but but by the way, we're going to publish a link to the full video that you guys did. So we'll share that with folks. But it's one of the most challenging aspects of data mesh, if you're going to decentralize you, you quickly realize this could be the Wild West as we talked about all over again. So how are you approaching governance? There's a lot of items on this slide that are, you know, underscore the complexity, whether it's privacy, compliance etcetera. So, so how did you approach this? >>It's yeah, it's about connecting those dots. Right. So the aim of the data governance program is about the autonomy of every team was still ensuring that everybody has the right interoperability. So when we want to move from the Wild West riding horses to a civilised way of transport, um you can take the example of modern street traffic, like when all participants can manoeuvre independently and as long as they follow the same rules and standards, everybody can remain compatible with each other and understand and learn from each other so we can avoid car crashes. So when I go from country to country, I do understand what the street infrastructure means. How do I drive my car? I can also read the traffic lights in the different signals. Um, so likewise as a business and Hello Fresh, we do operate autonomously and consequently need to follow those external and internal rules and standards to set forth by the redistribution in which we operate so in order to prevent a car crash, we need to at least ensure compliance with regulations to account for society's and our customers increasing concern with data protection and privacy. So teaching and advocating this advantage, realizing this to everyone in the company um was a key community communication strategy and of course, I mean I mentioned data privacy external factors, the same goes for internal regulations and processes to help our colleagues to adapt to this very new environment. So when I mentioned before the new way of thinking the new way of um dealing and managing data, this of course implies that we need new processes and regulations for our colleagues as well. Um in a nutshell then this means the data governance provides a framework for managing our people the processes and technology and culture around our data traffic. And those components must come together in order to have this effective program providing at least a common denominator, especially critical for shared dataset, which we have across our different geographies managed and shared applications on shared infrastructure and applications and is then consumed by centralized processes um for example, master data, everything and all the metrics and KPI s which are also used for a central steering. Um it's a big change day. Right. And our ultimate goal is to have this noninvasive, Federated um ultimatum and computational governance and for that we can't just talk about it. We actually have to go deep and use case by use case and Qc buy PVC and generate learnings and learnings with the different teams. And this would be a classical approach of identifying the target structure, the target status, match it with the current status by identifying together with the business teams with the different domains have a risk assessment for example, to increase transparency because a lot of teams, they might not even know what kind of situation they might be. And this is where this training and this piece of illiteracy comes into place where we go in and trade based on the findings based on the most valuable use case um and based on that help our teams to do this change to increase um their capability just a little bit more and once they hand holding. But a lot of guidance >>can I kind of kind of trying to quickly David will allow me I mean there's there's a lot of governance piece but I think um that is important. And if you're talking about documentation for example, yes, we can go from team to team and tell these people how you have to document your data and data catalog or you have to establish data contracts and so on the force. But if you would like to build data products at scale following actual governance, we need to think about automation right. We need to think about a lot of things that we can learn from engineering before. And that starts with simple things like if we would like to build up trust in our data products, right, and actually want to apply the same rigor and the best practices that we know from engineering. There are things that we can do and we should probably think about what we can copy and one example might be. So the level of service level agreements, service level objectives. So that level indicators right, that represent on on an engineering level, right? If we're providing services there representing the promises we made to our customers or consumers, these are the internal objectives that help us to keep those promises. And actually these are the way of how we are tracking ourselves, how we are doing. And this is just one example of that thing. The Federated Governor governance comes into play right. In an ideal world, we should not just talk about data as a product but also data product. That's code that we say, okay, as most as much as possible. Right? Give the engineers the tool that they are familiar basis and actually not ask the product managers for example to document their data assets in the data catalog but make it part of the configuration. Have this as a, as a C D C I, a continuous delivery pipeline as we typically see another engineering task through and services we say, okay, there is configuration, we can think about pr I can think about data quality monitoring, we can think about um the ingestion data catalog and so on and forest, I think ideally in the data product will become of a certain templates that can be deployed and are actually rejected or verified at build time before we actually make them deploy them to production. >>Yeah, So it's like devoPS for data product um so I'm envisioning almost a three phase approach to governance and you kind of, it sounds like you're in early phases called phase zero where there's there's learning, there's literacy, there's training, education, there's kind of self governance and then there's some kind of oversight, some a lot of manual stuff going on and then you you're trying to process builders at this phase and then you codify it and then you can automate it. Is that fair? >>Yeah, I would rather think think about automation as early as possible in the way and yes, there needs to be certain rules but then actually start actually use case by use case. Is there anything that small piece that we can already automate? It's as possible. Roll that out and then actually extended step by step, >>is there a role though that adjudicates that? Is there a central Chief state officer who is responsible for making sure people are complying or is it how do you handle that? >>I mean from a from a from a platform perspective, yes, we have a centralized team to uh implement certain pieces they'll be saying are important and actually would like to implement. However, that is actually working very closely with the governance department. So it's Clements piece to understand and defy the policies that needs to be implemented. >>So Clements essentially it's it's your responsibility to make sure that the policy is being followed. And then as you were saying, christoph trying to compress the time to automation as fast as possible percent. >>So >>it's really it's uh >>what needs to be really clear that it's always a split effort, Right? So you can't just do one thing or the other thing, but everything really goes hand in hand because for the right automation for the right engineering tooling, we need to have the transparency first. Uh I mean code needs to be coded so we kind of need to operate on the same level with the right understanding. So there's actually two things that are important which is one its policies and guidelines, but not only that because more importantly or even well equally important to align with the end user and tech teams and engineering and really bridge between business value business teams and the engineering teams. >>Got it. So just a couple more questions because we gotta wrap I want to talk a little bit about the business outcome. I know it's hard to quantify and I'll talk about that in a moment but but major learnings, we've got some of the challenges that you cited. I'll just put them up here. We don't have to go detailed into this, but I just wanted to share with some folks. But my question, I mean this is the advice for your peers question if you had to do it differently if you had a do over or a Mulligan as we like to say for you golfers, what would you do differently? Yeah, >>I mean can we start with from a from the transformational challenge that understanding that it's also high load of cultural change. I think this is this is important that a particular communication strategy needs to be put into place and people really need to be um supported. Right? So it's not that we go in and say well we have to change towards data mesh but naturally it's in human nature, you know, we're kind of resistance to to change right? Her speech uncomfortable. So we need to take that away by training and by communicating um chris we're gonna add something to that >>and definitely I think the point that I have also made before right we need to acknowledge that data mesh is an architecture of scale, right? You're looking for something which is necessary by huge companies who are vulnerable, data productive scale. I mean Dave you mentioned it right, there are a lot of advantages to have a centralized team but at some point it may make sense to actually decentralized here and at this point right? If you think about data Mash, you have to recognize that you're not building something on a green field. And I think there's a big learning which is also reflected here on the slide is don't underestimate your baggage. It's typically you come to a point where the old model doesn't doesn't broke anymore and has had a fresh right? We lost our trust in our data and actually we have seen certain risks that we're slowing down our innovation so we triggered that this was triggering the need to actually change something. So this transition implies that you typically have a lot of technical debt accumulated over years and I think what we have learned is that potentially we have decentralized some assets to earlier, this is not actually taking into account the maturity of the team where we are actually distributed to and now we actually in the face of correcting pieces of that one. Right? But I think if you if you if you start from scratch you have to understand, okay, is are my team is actually ready for taking on this new uh, this news capabilities and you have to make sure that business decentralization, you build up these >>capabilities and the >>teams and as Clements has mentioned, right, make sure that you take the people on your journey. I think these are the pieces that also here, it comes with this knowledge gap, right? That we need to think about hiring and literacy the technical depth I just talked about and I think the last piece that I would add now which is not here on the flight deck is also from our perspective, we started on the analytical layer because that's kind of where things are exploding, right, this is the thing that people feel the pain but I think a lot of the efforts that we have started to actually modernize the current state uh, towards data product towards data Mash. We've understood that it always comes down basically to a proper shape of our operational plane and I think what needs to happen is is I think we got through a lot of pains but the learning here is this need to really be a commitment from the company that needs to happen and to act. >>I think that point that last point you made it so critical because I I hear a lot from the vendor community about how they're gonna make analytics better and that's that's not unimportant, but but through data product thinking and decentralized data organizations really have to operationalize in order to scale. So these decisions around data architecture an organization, their fundamental and lasting, it's not necessarily about an individual project are why they're gonna be project sub projects within this architecture. But the architectural decision itself is an organizational, its cultural and what's the best approach to support your business at scale. It really speaks to to to what you are, who you are as a company, how you operate and getting that right, as we've seen in the success of data driven driven companies is yields tremendous results. So I'll ask each of you to give give us your final thoughts and then we'll wrap maybe >>maybe it quickly, please. Yeah, maybe just just jumping on this piece that you have mentioned, right, the target architecture. If we talk about these pieces right, people often have this picture of mind like OK, there are different kind of stages, we have sources, we have actually ingestion layer, we have historical transformation presentation layer and then we're basically putting a lot of technology on top of that kind of our target architecture. However, I think what we really need to make sure is that we have these different kind of viewers, right? We need to understand what are actually the capabilities that we need in our new goals. How does it look and feel from the different kind of personas and experience view? And then finally, that should actually go to the to the target architecture from a technical perspective um maybe just to give an outlook but what we're what we're planning to do, how we want to move that forward. We have actually based on our strategy in the in the sense of we would like to increase that to maturity as a whole across the entire company and this is kind of a framework around the business strategy and it's breaking down into four pillars as well. People meaning the data, cultural, data literacy, data organizational structure and so on that. We're talking about governance as Clements has actually mentioned that, right, compliance, governance, data management and so on. You talk about technology and I think we could talk for hours for that one. It's around data platform, better science platform and then finally also about enablement through data, meaning we need to understand that a quality data accessibility and the science and data monetization. >>Great, thank you christophe clement. Once you bring us home give us your final thoughts. >>Can't can just agree with christoph that uh important is to understand what kind of maturity people have to understand what the maturity level, where the company where where people organization is and really understand what does kind of some kind of a change replies to that those four pillars for example, um what needs to be taken first and this is not very clear from the very first beginning of course them it's kind of like Greenfield you come up with must wins to come up with things that we really want to do out of theory and out of different white papers. Um only if you really start conducting the first initiatives you do understand. Okay, where we have to put the starts together and where do I missed out on one of those four different pillars? People, process technology and governance. Right? And then that kind of an integration. Doing step by step, small steps by small steps not boiling the ocean where you're capable ready to identify the gaps and see where either you can fill um the gaps are where you have to increase maturity first and train people or increase your text text, >>you know Hello Fresh is an excellent example of a company that is innovating. It was not born in Silicon Valley which I love. It's a global company. Uh and I gotta ask you guys, it seems like this is an amazing place to work you guys hiring? >>Yes, >>definitely. We do >>uh as many rights as was one of these aspects distributing. And actually we are hiring as an entire company specifically for data. I think there are a lot of open roles serious. So this is to me this is why I get so excited about data mesh because I really do the company needs to really understand what our core business concept that they have, they need to have this mapping from. to the full video that you guys did. in order to prevent a car crash, we need to at least ensure the promises we made to our customers or consumers, these are the internal objectives that help us to keep a three phase approach to governance and you kind of, it sounds like you're in early phases called phase zero where Is there anything that small piece that we can already automate? and defy the policies that needs to be implemented. that the policy is being followed. so we kind of need to operate on the same level with the right understanding. or a Mulligan as we like to say for you golfers, what would you do differently? So it's not that we go in and say So this transition implies that you typically have a lot of the company that needs to happen and to act. It really speaks to to to what you are, who you are as a company, how you operate and in the in the sense of we would like to increase that to maturity as a whole across the entire company and this is kind Once you bring us home give us your final thoughts. and see where either you can fill um the gaps are where you Uh and I gotta ask you guys, it seems like this is an amazing place to work you guys hiring? I'll be with you throughout the day from an amazing lineup of content, over 50 different sessions, cube tracks, keynotes, and we've got two great co-hosts here with Docker, Jenny Burcio and Bret Fisher. We have a great day planned for you. >> Guys great job getting this all together. I know how hard it is. These virtual events are hard to pull off. I'm blown away by the community at Docker. The amount of sessions that are coming in the sponsor support has been amazing. Just the overall excitement around the brand and the opportunities given this tough times where we're in. It's super exciting again, made the internet gods be with us throughout the day, but there's plenty of content. Bret's got an amazing all day marathon group of people coming in and chatting. Jenny, this has been an amazing journey and it's a great opportunity. Tell us about the virtual event. Why DockerCon virtual. Obviously everyone's canceling their events, but this is special to you guys. Talk about DockerCon virtual this year. >> The Docker community shows up at DockerCon every year, and even though we didn't have the opportunity to do an in person event this year, we didn't want to lose the time that we all come together at DockerCon. The conversations, the amazing content and learning opportunities. So we decided back in December to make DockerCon a virtual event. And of course when we did that, there was no quarantine we didn't expect, you know, I certainly didn't expect to be delivering it from my living room, but we were just, I mean we were completely blown away. There's nearly 70,000 people across the globe that have registered for DockerCon today. And when you look at DockerCon of past right live events, really and we're learning are just the tip of the iceberg and so thrilled to be able to deliver a more inclusive global event today. And we have so much planned I think. Bret, you want to tell us some of the things that you have planned? >> Well, I'm sure I'm going to forget something 'cause there's a lot going on. But, we've obviously got interviews all day today on this channel with John and the crew. Jenny has put together an amazing set of all these speakers, and then you have the captain's on deck, which is essentially the YouTube live hangout where we just basically talk shop. It's all engineers, all day long. Captains and special guests. And we're going to be in chat talking to you about answering your questions. Maybe we'll dig into some stuff based on the problems you're having or the questions you have. Maybe there'll be some random demos, but it's basically not scripted, it's an all day long unscripted event. So I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun hanging out in there. >> Well guys, I want to just say it's been amazing how you structured this so everyone has a chance to ask questions, whether it's informal laid back in the captain's channel or in the sessions, where the speakers will be there with their presentations. But Jenny, I want to get your thoughts because we have a site out there that's structured a certain way for the folks watching. If you're on your desktop, there's a main stage hero. There's then tracks and Bret's running the captain's tracks. You can click on that link and jump into his session all day long. He's got an amazing set of line of sleet, leaning back, having a good time. And then each of the tracks, you can jump into those sessions. It's on a clock, it'll be available on demand. All that content is available if you're on your desktop. If you're on your mobile, it's the same thing. Look at the calendar, find the session that you want. But we're going to be basically starting the day with two of my good Docker captain friends, (murmurs) and Laura Taco. And we're going to basically start you out and at the end of this keynote, at the end of this hour and we're going to get you going and then you can maybe jump out and go to take some sessions. Maybe there's some stuff you want to check out and other sessions that you want to chat and talk with the instructors, the speakers there, and then you're going to come back to us, right? Or go over, check out the interviews. So the idea is you're hopping back and forth and throughout the day we're basically changing out every hour. We're not just changing out the guests basically, but we're also changing out the topics that we can cover because different guests will have different expertise. We're going to have some special guests in from Microsoft, talk about some of the cool stuff going on there, and basically it's captains all day long. But the coolest thing about as business online, is that we actually get to involve everyone, so as long as you have a computer and internet, you can actually attend DockerCon if you've never been to one before. So we're trying to recreate that experience online. Like Jenny said, the code of conduct is important. So, we're all in this together with the chat, so try to be nice in there. These are all real humans that, have feelings just like me. So let's try to keep it cool. I'm looking forward to the Microsoft Amazon sessions, which are going to be good. And there's a couple of great customer sessions there. I tweeted this out last night and let them get you guys' reaction to this because there's been a lot of talk around the COVID crisis that we're in, but there's also a positive upshot to this is Cambridge and explosion of developers that are going to be building new apps. And I said, you know, apps aren't going to just change the world, they're going to save the world. So a lot of the theme here is the impact that developers are having right now in the current situation. If we get the goodness of compose and all the things going on in Docker and the relationships, this real impact happening with the developer community. And it's pretty evident in the program and some of the talks and some of the examples. how containers and microservices are certainly changing the world and helping save the world, your thoughts. >> Like you said, a number of sessions and interviews in the program today that really dive into that. And even particularly around COVID, Clement Beyondo is sharing his company's experience, from being able to continue operations in Italy when they were completely shut down beginning of March. We have also in theCUBE channel several interviews about from the national Institute of health and precision cancer medicine at the end of the day. And you just can really see how containerization and developers are moving in industry and really humanity forward because of what they're able to build and create, with advances in technology. >> Yeah and the first responders and these days is developers. Bret compose is getting a lot of traction on Twitter. I can see some buzz already building up. There's huge traction with compose, just the ease of use and almost a call for arms for integrating into all the system language libraries, I mean, what's going on with compose? I mean, what's the captain say about this? I mean, it seems to be really tracking in terms of demand and interest. >> I think we're over 700,000 composed files on GitHub. So it's definitely beyond just the standard Docker run commands. It's definitely the next tool that people use to run containers. Just by having that we just buy, and that's not even counting. I mean that's just counting the files that are named Docker compose YAML. So I'm sure a lot of you out there have created a YAML file to manage your local containers or even on a server with Docker compose. And the nice thing is is Docker is doubling down on that. So we've gotten some news recently, from them about what they want to do with opening the spec up, getting more companies involved because compose is already gathered so much interest from the community. You know, AWS has importers, there's Kubernetes importers for it. So there's more stuff coming and we might just see something here in a few minutes. >> All right, well let's get into the keynote guys, jump into the keynote. Hi, I'm Scott Johnson, CEO of Docker and welcome to DockerCon 2020. This year DockerCon is an all virtual event with more than 60,000 members of the Docker Community joining from around the world. And with the global shelter in place policies, we're excited to offer a unifying, inclusive virtual community event in which anyone and everyone can participate from their home. As a company, Docker has been through a lot of changes since our last DockerCon last year. The most important starting last November, is our refocusing 100% on developers and development teams. As part of that refocusing, one of the big challenges we've been working on, is how to help development teams quickly and efficiently get their app from code to cloud And wouldn't it be cool, if developers could quickly deploy to the cloud right from their local environment with the commands and workflow they already know. We're excited to give you a sneak preview of what we've been working on. And rather than slides, we thought we jumped right into the product. And joining me demonstrate some of these cool new features, is enclave your DACA. One of our engineers here at Docker working on Docker compose. Hello Lanca. >> Hello. >> We're going to show how an application development team collaborates using Docker desktop and Docker hub. And then deploys the app directly from the Docker command line to the clouds in just two commands. A development team would use this to quickly share functional changes of their app with the product management team, with beta testers or other development teams. Let's go ahead and take a look at our app. Now, this is a web app, that randomly pulls words from the database, and assembles them into sentences. You can see it's a pretty typical three tier application with each tier implemented in its own container. We have a front end web service, a middle tier, which implements the logic to randomly pull the words from the database and assemble them and a backend database. And here you can see the database uses the Postgres official image from Docker hub. Now let's first run the app locally using Docker command line and the Docker engine in Docker desktop. We'll do a Doc compose up and you can see that it's pulling the containers from our Docker organization account. Wordsmith, inc. Now that it's up. Let's go ahead and look at local host and we'll confirm that the application is functioning as desired. So there's one sentence, let's pull and now you and you can indeed see that we are pulling random words and assembling into sentences. Now you can also see though that the look and feel is a bit dated. And so Lanca is going to show us how easy it is to make changes and share them with the rest of the team. Lanca, over to you. >> Thank you, so I have, the source code of our application on my machine and I have updated it with the latest team from DockerCon 2020. So before committing the code, I'm going to build the application locally and run it, to verify that indeed the changes are good. So I'm going to build with Docker compose the image for the web service. Now that the image has been built, I'm going to deploy it locally. Wait to compose up. We can now check the dashboard in a Docker desktop that indeed our containers are up and running, and we can access, we can open in the web browser, the end point for the web service. So as we can see, we have the latest changes in for our application. So as you can see, the application has been updated successfully. So now, I'm going to push the image that I have just built to my organization's shared repository on Docker hub. So I can do this with Docker compose push web. Now that the image has been updated in the Docker hub repository, or my teammates can access it and check the changes. >> Excellent, well, thank you Lanca. Now of course, in these times, video conferencing is the new normal, and as great as it is, video conferencing does not allow users to actually test the application. And so, to allow us to have our app be accessible by others outside organizations such as beta testers or others, let's go ahead and deploy to the cloud. >> Sure we, can do this by employing a context. A Docker context, is a mechanism that we can use to target different platforms for deploying containers. The context we hold, information as the endpoint for the platform, and also how to authenticate to it. So I'm going to list the context that I have set locally. As you can see, I'm currently using the default context that is pointing to my local Docker engine. So all the commands that I have issued so far, we're targeting my local engine. Now, in order to deploy the application on a cloud. I have an account in the Azure Cloud, where I have no resource running currently, and I have created for this account, dedicated context that will hold the information on how to connect it to it. So now all I need to do, is to switch to this context, with Docker context use, and the name of my cloud context. So all the commands that I'm going to run, from now on, are going to target the cloud platform. So we can also check very, more simpler, in a simpler way we can check the running containers with Docker PS. So as we see no container is running in my cloud account. Now to deploy the application, all I need to do is to run a Docker compose up. And this will trigger the deployment of my application. >> Thanks Lanca. Now notice that Lanca did not have to move the composed file from Docker desktop to Azure. Notice you have to make any changes to the Docker compose file, and nor did she change any of the containers that she and I were using locally in our local environments. So the same composed file, same images, run locally and upon Azure without changes. While the app is deploying to Azure, let's highlight some of the features in Docker hub that helps teams with remote first collaboration. So first, here's our team's account where it (murmurs) and you can see the updated container sentences web that Lanca just pushed a couple of minutes ago. As far as collaboration, we can add members using their Docker ID or their email, and then we can organize them into different teams depending on their role in the application development process. So and then Lancae they're organized into different teams, we can assign them permissions, so that teams can work in parallel without stepping on each other's changes accidentally. For example, we'll give the engineering team full read, write access, whereas the product management team will go ahead and just give read only access. So this role based access controls, is just one of the many features in Docker hub that allows teams to collaboratively and quickly develop applications. Okay Lanca, how's our app doing? >> Our app has been successfully deployed to the cloud. So, we can easily check either the Azure portal to verify the containers running for it or simpler we can run a Docker PS again to get the list with the containers that have been deployed for it. In the output from the Docker PS, we can see an end point that we can use to access our application in the web browser. So we can see the application running in clouds. It's really up to date and now we can take this particular endpoint and share it within our organization such that anybody can have a look at it. >> That's cool Onka. We showed how we can deploy an app to the cloud in minutes and just two commands, and using commands that Docker users already know, thanks so much. In that sneak preview, you saw a team developing an app collaboratively, with a tool chain that includes Docker desktop and Docker hub. And simply by switching Docker context from their local environment to the cloud, deploy that app to the cloud, to Azure without leaving the command line using Docker commands they already know. And in doing so, really simplifying for development team, getting their app from code to cloud. And just as important, what you did not see, was a lot of complexity. You did not see cloud specific interfaces, user management or security. You did not see us having to provision and configure compute networking and storage resources in the cloud. And you did not see infrastructure specific application changes to either the composed file or the Docker images. And by simplifying a way that complexity, these new features help application DevOps teams, quickly iterate and get their ideas, their apps from code to cloud, and helping development teams, build share and run great applications, is what Docker is all about. A Docker is able to simplify for development teams getting their app from code to cloud quickly as a result of standards, products and ecosystem partners. It starts with open standards for applications and application artifacts, and active open source communities around those standards to ensure portability and choice. Then as you saw in the demo, the Docker experience delivered by Docker desktop and Docker hub, simplifies a team's collaborative development of applications, and together with ecosystem partners provides every stage of an application development tool chain. For example, deploying applications to the cloud in two commands. What you saw on the demo, well that's an extension of our strategic partnership with Microsoft, which we announced yesterday. And you can learn more about our partnership from Amanda Silver from Microsoft later today, right here at DockerCon. Another tool chain stage, the capability to scan applications for security and vulnerabilities, as a result of our partnership with Sneak, which we announced last week. You can learn more about that partnership from Peter McKay, CEO Sneak, again later today, right here at DockerCon. A third example, development team can automate the build of container images upon a simple get push, as a result of Docker hub integrations with GitHub and Alaska and Bitbucket. As a final example of Docker and the ecosystem helping teams quickly build applications, together with our ISV partners. We offer in Docker hub over 500 official and verified publisher images of ready to run Dockerized application components such as databases, load balancers, programming languages, and much more. Of course, none of this happens without people. And I would like to take a moment to thank four groups of people in particular. First, the Docker team, past and present. We've had a challenging 12 months including a restructuring and then a global pandemic, and yet their support for each other, and their passion for the product, this community and our customers has never been stronger. We think our community, Docker wouldn't be Docker without you, and whether you're one of the 50 Docker captains, they're almost 400 meetup organizers, the thousands of contributors and maintainers. Every day you show up, you give back, you teach new support. We thank our users, more than six and a half million developers who have built more than 7 million applications and are then sharing those applications through Docker hub at a rate of more than one and a half billion poles per week. Those apps are then run, are more than 44 million Docker engines. And finally, we thank our customers, the over 18,000 docker subscribers, both individual developers and development teams from startups to large organizations, 60% of which are outside the United States. And they spend every industry vertical, from media, to entertainment to manufacturing. healthcare and much more. Thank you. Now looking forward, given these unprecedented times, we would like to offer a challenge. While it would be easy to feel helpless and miss this global pandemic, the challenge is for us as individuals and as a community to instead see and grasp the tremendous opportunities before us to be forces for good. For starters, look no further than the pandemic itself, in the fight against this global disaster, applications and data are playing a critical role, and the Docker Community quickly recognize this and rose to the challenge. There are over 600 COVID-19 related publicly available projects on Docker hub today, from data processing to genome analytics to data visualization folding at home. The distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, is also available on Docker hub, and it uses spirit compute capacity to analyze COVID-19 proteins to aid in the design of new therapies. And right here at DockerCon, you can hear how Clemente Biondo and his company engineering in Gagne area Informatica are using Docker in the fight with COVID-19 in Italy every day. Now, in addition to fighting the pandemic directly, as a community, we also have an opportunity to bridge the disruption the pandemic is wreaking. It's impacting us at work and at home in every country around the world and every aspect of our lives. For example, many of you have a student at home, whose world is going to be very different when they returned to school. As employees, all of us have experienced the stresses from working from home as well as many of the benefits and in fact 75% of us say that going forward, we're going to continue to work from home at least occasionally. And of course one of the biggest disruptions has been job losses, over 35 million in the United States alone. And we know that's affected many of you. And yet your skills are in such demand and so important now more than ever. And that's why here at DockerCon, we want to try to do our part to help, and we're promoting this hashtag on Twitter, hashtag DockerCon jobs, where job seekers and those offering jobs can reach out to one another and connect. Now, pandemics disruption is accelerating the shift of more and more of our time, our priorities, our dollars from offline to online to hybrid, and even online only ways of living. We need to find new ways to collaborate, new approaches to engage customers, new modes for education and much more. And what is going to fill the needs created by this acceleration from offline, online? New applications. And it's this need, this demand for all these new applications that represents a great opportunity for the Docker community of developers. The world needs us, needs you developers now more than ever. So stay with us and enjoy the rest of the day. We'll see you back shortly. (upbeat music) >> Hi, I'm James Governor, one of the co-founders of a company called RedMonk. We're an industry research firm focusing on developer led technology adoption. So that's I guess why Docker invited me to DockerCon 2020 to talk about some trends that we're seeing in the world of work and software development. So Monk Chips, that's who I am. I spent a lot of time on Twitter. It's a great research tool. It's a great way to find out what's going on with keep track of, as I say, there's people that we value so highly software developers, engineers and practitioners. So when I started talking to Docker about this event and it was pre Rhona, should we say, the idea of a crowd wasn't a scary thing, but today you see something like this, it makes you feel uncomfortable. This is not a place that I want to be. I'm pretty sure it's a place you don't want to be. And you know, to that end, I think it's interesting quote by Ellen Powell, she says, "Work from home is now just work" And we're going to see more and more of that. Organizations aren't feeling the same way they did about work before. Who all these people? Who is my cLancaern? So GitHub says has 50 million developers right on its network. Now, one of the things I think is most interesting, it's not that it has 50 million developers. Perhaps that's a proxy for number of developers worldwide. But quite frankly, a lot of those accounts, there's all kinds of people there. They're just Selena's. There are data engineers, there are data scientists, there are product managers, there were tech marketers. It's a big, big community and it goes way beyond just software developers itself. Frankly for me, I'd probably be saying there's more like 20 to 25 million developers worldwide, but GitHub knows a lot about the world of code. So what else do they know? One of the things they know is that world of code software and opensource, is becoming increasingly global. I get so excited about this stuff. The idea that there are these different software communities around the planet where we're seeing massive expansions in terms of things like open source. Great example is Nigeria. So Nigeria more than 200 million people, right? The energy there in terms of events, in terms of learning, in terms of teaching, in terms of the desire to code, the desire to launch businesses, desire to be part of a global software community is just so exciting. And you know, these, this sort of energy is not just in Nigeria, it's in other countries in Africa, it's happening in Egypt. It's happening around the world. This energy is something that's super interesting to me. We need to think about that. We've got global that we need to solve. And software is going to be a big part of that. At the moment, we can talk about other countries, but what about frankly the gender gap, the gender issue that, you know, from 1984 onwards, the number of women taking computer science degrees began to, not track but to create in comparison to what men were doing. The tech industry is way too male focused, there are men that are dominant, it's not welcoming, we haven't found ways to have those pathways and frankly to drive inclusion. And the women I know in tech, have to deal with the massively disproportionate amount of stress and things like online networks. But talking about online networks and talking about a better way of living, I was really excited by get up satellite recently, was a fantastic demo by Alison McMillan and she did a demo of a code spaces. So code spaces is Microsoft online ID, new platform that they've built. And online IDs, we're never quite sure, you know, plenty of people still out there just using the max. But, visual studio code has been a big success. And so this idea of moving to one online IDE, it's been around that for awhile. What they did was just make really tight integration. So you're in your GitHub repo and just be able to create a development environment with effectively one click, getting rid of all of the act shaving, making it super easy. And what I loved was it the demo, what Ali's like, yeah cause this is great. One of my kids are having a nap, I can just start (murmurs) and I don't have to sort out all the rest of it. And to me that was amazing. It was like productivity as inclusion. I'm here was a senior director at GitHub. They're doing this amazing work and then making this clear statement about being a parent. And I think that was fantastic. Because that's what, to me, importantly just working from home, which has been so challenging for so many of us, began to open up new possibilities, and frankly exciting possibilities. So Alley's also got a podcast parent-driven development, which I think is super important. Because this is about men and women rule in this together show parenting is a team sport, same as software development. And the idea that we should be thinking about, how to be more productive, is super important to me. So I want to talk a bit about developer culture and how it led to social media. Because you know, your social media, we're in this ad bomb stage now. It's TikTok, it's like exercise, people doing incredible back flips and stuff like that. Doing a bunch of dancing. We've had the world of sharing cat gifts, Facebook, we sort of see social media is I think a phenomenon in its own right. Whereas the me, I think it's interesting because it's its progenitors, where did it come from? So here's (murmurs) So 1971, one of the features in the emergency management information system, that he built, which it's topical, it was for medical tracking medical information as well, medical emergencies, included a bulletin board system. So that it could keep track of what people were doing on a team and make sure that they were collaborating effectively, boom! That was the start of something big, obviously. Another day I think is worth looking at 1983, Sorania Pullman, spanning tree protocol. So at DEC, they were very good at distributed systems. And the idea was that you can have a distributed system and so much of the internet working that we do today was based on radius work. And then it showed that basically, you could span out a huge network so that everyone could collaborate. That is incredibly exciting in terms of the trends, that I'm talking about. So then let's look at 1988, you've got IRC. IRC what developer has not used IRC, right. Well, I guess maybe some of the other ones might not have. But I don't know if we're post IRC yet, but (murmurs) at a finished university, really nailed it with IRC as a platform that people could communicate effectively with. And then we go into like 1991. So we've had IRC, we've had finished universities, doing a lot of really fantastic work about collaboration. And I don't think it was necessarily an accident that this is where the line is twofold, announced Linux. So Linux was a wonderfully packaged, idea in terms of we're going to take this Unix thing. And when I say package, what a package was the idea that we could collaborate on software. So, it may have just been the work of one person, but clearly what made it important, made it interesting, was finding a social networking pattern, for software development so that everybody could work on something at scale. That was really, I think, fundamental and foundational. Now I think it's important, We're going to talk about Linus, to talk about some things that are not good about software culture, not good about open source culture, not good about hacker culture. And that's where I'm going to talk about code of conduct. We have not been welcoming to new people. We got the acronyms, JFTI, We call people news, that's super unhelpful. We've got to find ways to be more welcoming and more self-sustaining in our communities, because otherwise communities will fail. And I'd like to thank everyone that has a code of conduct and has encouraged others to have codes of conduct. We need to have codes of conduct that are enforced to ensure that we have better diversity at our events. And that's what women, underrepresented minorities, all different kinds of people need to be well looked off to and be in safe and inclusive spaces. And that's the online events. But of course it's also for all of our activities offline. So Linus, as I say, I'm not the most charming of characters at all time, but he has done some amazing technology. So we got to like 2005 the creation of GIT. Not necessarily the distributed version control system that would win. But there was some interesting principles there, and they'd come out of the work that he had done in terms of trying to build and sustain the Linux code base. So it was very much based on experience. He had an itch that he needed to scratch and there was a community that was this building, this thing. So what was going to be the option, came up with Git foundational to another huge wave of social change, frankly get to logical awesome. April 20 April, 2008 GitHub, right? GiHub comes up, they've looked at Git, they've packaged it up, they found a way to make it consumable so the teams could use it and really begin to take advantage of the power of that distributed version control model. Now, ironically enough, of course they centralized the service in doing so. So we have a single point of failure on GitHub. But on the other hand, the notion of the poll request, the primitives that they established and made usable by people, that changed everything in terms of software development. I think another one that I'd really like to look at is Slack. So Slack is a huge success used by all different kinds of businesses. But it began specifically as a pivot from a company called Glitch. It was a game company and they still wanted, a tool internally that was better than IRC. So they built out something that later became Slack. So Slack 2014, is established as a company and basically it was this Slack fit software engineering. The focus on automation, the conversational aspects, the asynchronous aspects. It really pulled things together in a way that was interesting to software developers. And I think we've seen this pattern in the world, frankly, of the last few years. Software developers are influences. So Slack first used by the engineering teams, later used by everybody. And arguably you could say the same thing actually happened with Apple. Apple was mainstreamed by developers adopting that platform. Get to 2013, boom again, Solomon Hikes, Docker, right? So Docker was, I mean containers were not new, they were just super hard to use. People found it difficult technology, it was Easter Terek. It wasn't something that they could fully understand. Solomon did an incredible job of understanding how containers could fit into modern developer workflows. So if we think about immutable images, if we think about the ability to have everything required in the package where you are, it really tied into what people were trying to do with CICD, tied into microservices. And certainly the notion of sort of display usability Docker nailed that, and I guess from this conference, at least the rest is history. So I want to talk a little bit about, scratching the itch. And particularly what has become, I call it the developer authentic. So let's go into dark mode now. I've talked about developers laying out these foundations and frameworks that, the mainstream, frankly now my son, he's 14, he (murmurs) at me if I don't have dark mode on in an application. And it's this notion that developers, they have an aesthetic, it does get adopted I mean it's quite often jokey. One of the things we've seen in the really successful platforms like GitHub, Docker, NPM, let's look at GitHub. Let's look at over that Playfulness. I think was really interesting. And that changes the world of work, right? So we've got the world of work which can be buttoned up, which can be somewhat tight. I think both of those companies were really influential, in thinking that software development, which is a profession, it's also something that can and is fun. And I think about how can we make it more fun? How can we develop better applications together? Takes me to, if we think about Docker talking about build, share and run, for me the key word is share, because development has to be a team sport. It needs to be sharing. It needs to be kind and it needs to bring together people to do more effective work. Because that's what it's all about, doing effective work. If you think about zoom, it's a proxy for collaboration in terms of its value. So we've got all of these airlines and frankly, add up that their share that add up their total value. It's currently less than Zoom. So video conferencing has become so much of how we live now on a consumer basis. But certainly from a business to business perspective. I want to talk about how we live now. I want to think about like, what will come out all of this traumatic and it is incredibly traumatic time? I'd like to say I'm very privileged. I can work from home. So thank you to all the frontline workers that are out there that they're not in that position. But overall what I'm really thinking about, there's some things that will come out of this that will benefit us as a culture. Looking at cities like Paris, Milan, London, New York, putting a new cycling infrastructure, so that people can social distance and travel outside because they don't feel comfortable on public transport. I think sort of amazing widening pavements or we can't do that. All these cities have done it literally overnight. This sort of changes is exciting. And what does come off that like, oh there are some positive aspects of the current issues that we face. So I've got a conference or I've got a community that may and some of those, I've been working on. So Katie from HashiCorp and Carla from container solutions basically about, look, what will the world look like in developer relations? Can we have developer relations without the air miles? 'Cause developer advocates, they do too much travel ends up, you know, burning them out, develop relations. People don't like to say no. They may have bosses that say, you know, I was like, Oh that corporates went great. Now we're going to roll it out worldwide to 47 cities. That's stuff is terrible. It's terrible from a personal perspective, it's really terrible from an environmental perspective. We need to travel less. Virtual events are crushing it. Microsoft just at build, right? Normally that'd be just over 10,000 people, they had 245,000 plus registrations. 40,000 of them in the last day, right? Red Hat summit, 80,000 people, IBM think 90,000 people, GitHub Crushed it as well. Like this is a more inclusive way people can dip in. They can be from all around the world. I mentioned Nigeria and how fantastic it is. Very often Nigerian developers and advocates find it hard to get visas. Why should they be shut out of events? Events are going to start to become remote first because frankly, look at it, if you're turning in those kinds of numbers, and Microsoft was already doing great online events, but they absolutely nailed it. They're going to have to ask some serious questions about why everybody should get back on a plane again. So if you're going to do remote, you've got to be intentional about it. It's one thing I've learned some exciting about GitLab. GitLab's culture is amazing. Everything is documented, everything is public, everything is transparent. Think that really clear and if you look at their principles, everything, you can't have implicit collaboration models. Everything needs to be documented and explicit, so that anyone can work anywhere and they can still be part of the team. Remote first is where we're at now, Coinbase, Shopify, even Barkley says the not going to go back to having everybody in offices in the way they used to. This is a fundamental shift. And I think it's got significant implications for all industries, but definitely for software development. Here's the thing, the last 20 years were about distributed computing, microservices, the cloud, we've got pretty good at that. The next 20 years will be about distributed work. We can't have everybody living in San Francisco and London and Berlin. The talent is distributed, the talent is elsewhere. So how are we going to build tools? Who is going to scratch that itch to build tools to make them more effective? Who's building the next generation of apps, you are, thanks.

I'm John Furrier, the co-host of the Cube, co-founder of SiliconANGLE Media. In Puerto Rico for Blockchain Unbound, this is a global conference. I have an industry veteran here. My next guest Salim is founding CEO, Singularity University and author of the best-selling book, Exponential Organizations. He's seen many waves, friend, known him for years. Haven't seen you in a while, you look great. You haven't changed. >> (laughs) The hair has changed a lot. >> (laughs) I've still got mine. Hey great to see you. Bumping into you in Puerto Rico is really compelling because you have a nose for the future, and I've always respected that about you. You have the ability to understand at the root level what's going on but also pull back and see the big picture. Puerto Rico is the center of all the action because the killer wrap in this is money. So money is driving a lot of change, but there's some fundamental infrastructure, stack upgrades going on. Blockchain has been highly discussed, crypto is highly hyped, ICO's are-- Scammers out there but now some legits. What's your take? What's your view right now on the current situation? >> Well I think what's happening with a place like Puerto Rico is. When you get kind of wiped out of the old, you have the chance to leap-frog. When you think about any of our traditional environments, laying down Blockchain technologies, et cetera. It's really, really hard because you have to get the Supreme Court, the Constitution to approve blockchain based land titles, and then you build a stack there from a legal perspective. Here they can basically start from scratch and do it completely from the ground up. Which is what's exciting for everybody here. >> The top story that we've been reporting here is that Puerto Rico is rebooting. The hurricane obviously, I won't say a forcing function, but in general when you get wiped out, that is certainly an opportunity to rebuild. If there's any kind of silver lining in that. >> There's a long history of that. Japan got wiped out during World War II, so did Germany and they rebounded incredibly. We've seen that recently with Rwanda. We do a lot of work in Medillin, in Colombia, and that's just been one of the worst cities in the world, is now the most innovative city in the world. So this is the transition that we've seen a pattern for. >> One of the things I'm really excited about decentralization and blockchain is all the conversations have the same pattern. Efficiency is getting wired into things. So if you see slack in the system or inefficiencies, entrepreneurs are feeling the void. The entrepreneurial eye of the tiger goes that to that opportunity to reset, reduce steps, save time and make things easier. Classic value proposition in these new markets. You run a great university but also author of Exponential Organizations. A lot of people are scared, they're like, "Whoa, hold on. Slow down, this is bullshit, "we're not going to prove it." And then the other half saying, "No this is the future." So you have two competing forces colliding. You have the new guard saying, "We got to do this, this is the future." Old guard saying, "Blocks, Road blocks, blockers" You covered this in your book in a way, so how do you win, who wins? How do you create a win win? >> You can create a win win. What you have to do is leap-frog to the newest, fast as possible. The only question is, how can you get to the new? And the problem that you have is, as you rightly pointed out is. When you try disruptive innovation in any large organization or institution, the immune system attacks. I saw this at Yahoo running Brickhouse. Yahoo is supposedly a super advanced organization, and yet the minute you try to do something really radical, you spend all your time fighting the mother ship. So I've been focusing a lot of time the last few years focused on that particular problem, and we're pretty excited, we believe we've cracked it. >> How does someone crack that code? If I'm Puerto Rico, obviously the government officials are here at Blockchain Unbound. This is not just a tech conference. It's like a tech conference, investor conference, kind of world economic form rolled into one. >> Sure >> There's some serious players here. What's your advice to them? >> So what we do, and let me describe what we do in the private sector and what we do in the public sector. A couple of years ago, the global CI of Procter & Gamble came to me and said, "Hey, we'd like to work with you." And what we typically see is, some executive from a big company will come to Singularity. They'll go back headquarters with their hair on fire going, "Oh my god!" If they're from BMW for example. They go back going, "Drones, autonomous cars, hyperloop, VR." Back in Munich, they'll be given a white coat and some medicine and be put in a corner. "You're too crazy, now stand over there." And that's the tension that you are talking about. And then somebody else will come six months later then they'll do the Silicon Valley tour, then they'll have one of our people go over there, and it takes about three years for the big company to get up to speed, just the C-Suite to get up to speed. Forget transmitting that down. So I was talking to Linda Clement-Holmes and I said, "Look we're about to start this three year dance "I've been thinking about this, "let's shrink it to 10 weeks." So we designed what we now call an ExO Sprint. Which is how you get a leadership, culture and management thinking of a legacy organization, three years ahead in a 10 week process. And the way we do it is, we're in an opening workshop, that's really shock and awe. Freaks out all the incumbent management. And then young leaders and future lieutenants of the business do the thinking of what should come next. And they report back. Some thing about that opening workshop suppresses the immune system, and when the new ideas arrive they don't attack them in the same way. >> It's like a transplant if you will. >> It's like when you do a kidney transplant. You suppress the immune system, right? It's that same idea. So we've now run that like a dozen times. We just finished TD Ameritrade, HP, Visa, Black & Decker, et cetera. We're open-sourcing it. We're writing a manual on how to do it so that anybody can self-provision that process and run it. Because, every one of the Global 5000 has to go through that process with or without us. So then we said, "Okay, could we apply it to the public sector?" Where the existing policy is the immune system. You try and update transportation and you're fighting the taxis. Or education and you're fighting the teacher's unions. We have a 16 week process that we run in cities. We do it through a non-profit called the Fastrack Institute based out of Miami. We've run it four times in Medillin, in Colombia and we just finished four months with the mayor of Miami on the future of transportation. We're talking to the officials here about running a similar process here in Puerto Rico. >> Are they serious about that? Because they throw money at projects, it kind of sits on the vine, dies on the vine. Because there is an accelerated movement right now. I mean, exponential change is here. I'll give you an example. We're seeing and reporting that this digital nation trend is on fire. Suddenly everyone wants digital cities, IoT is out there. But now what cryptocurrency, the money being the killer app. It's flowing everywhere, out of Colombia, out of everywhere. Every country is moving money around with crypto it's easier, faster. So everyone is trying to be the crypto, ICO city. Saw it on Telegram today, France wants to be, Paris wants to be the ICO city. Puerto Rico, Bahrain, Armenia, Estonia. U.K. just signed a deal with Coinbase. What the hell is going on? How do you rationalize this and what do you see as a future of state here? >> Well I think, couple of thoughts. And you're hitting into some of the things I've been thinking about a lot recently. Number one is, that when you have a regulatory blockage, it's a huge economic developing opportunity for anybody that can leap-frog it. Nevada authorized autonomous cars early and now a lot of testing is done there. So the cities that have appreciated-- >> So you're saying regulatory is an opportunity to have a competitive advantage? >> Huge, because look at Zug in Switzerland. Nobody had ever heard of the place. You pass through there on the way to Zermatt. But now it's like a destination that everybody needs to get to because they were earlier. This is the traditional advantage of places like Hong Kong or Dubai or whatever. They're open and they're hungry. So we're going to see a lot of that going on. I think there's a bigger trend though, which is that we're seeing more and more action happen at the city level and very, very little happen at the national or global level. The world is moving too fast today for a big country to keep up. It's all going to happen this next century at the city level. >> Or smaller countries. >> Or small countries. >> So what's going on here at Blockchain Unbound for you? Why are you here? What are you doing? What's your story? >> I have this kind of sprint that we run in the private sector and in the public sector and then a community of about 200 consultants. And I have to pay 200 people in 40 countries and it's and unholy mess. Withholding taxes and concerns around money transfer costs-- >> It's a hassle. >> It's a nightmare. And so I've been thinking about an internal cryptocurrency just to pay our network. All of a sudden now, three or four countries have said, "Hey we want to buy that thing, "to have access to your network." So I've got all this demand over here, and I need to figure out how to design this thing properly. So I've been working with some of the folks like Brock and DNA and others to help think through it. But what I'm really excited about here is that, there's a-- You know what I love is the spectrum of dress. You got the radical, Burning Man, hippie guy, all the way to a three-piece suit. And that diversity is very, very rich and really, real creativity comes from it. This feels like the web in '96, '95. It's just starting, people know there's something really magical. They don't quite know what to do. >> Well what I'm impressed about is that there's no real bad vibe from either sets of groups. There's definitely some posturing, I've noticed some things. Obviously I'm wearing a jacket, so those guys aren't giving me hugs like they're giving Brock a hug. I get that, but the thing is, the coexistence is impressive. I'm not seeing any real mud-slinging, again I didn't like how Brock got handled with John Oliver. I thought that was unacceptable because he's done a lot of good work. I don't know him personally, I've never met him, but I like what he's doing, I like his message. His keynote here, at d10e, was awesome. Really the right messaging, I thought. That's something that I want to get behind and I think everyone should. But he just got trashed. Outside of that, welcoming culture. And they're like, "Hey if you don't like it, "just go somewhere else." They're not giving people a lot of shit for what they do. It's really accepting on all sides. >> Here's my take on the whole decentralization thing. We run the world today on a series of very top down hierarchical structures. The corporation, the military industrial complex, Judeo-Christian religions, et cetera. That are very hierarchical-- Designed for managing scarcity, right? We're moving the world very, very quickly to abundance. We now have an abundance of information, we'll soon have an abundance of energy, we'll soon have an abundance of money, et cetera. And when you do these new structures, you need very decentralized structures. Burning Man, the maker movement, the open-source movement, et cetera. It's a very nurturing, participatory, female type of archetype and we're moving very quickly to that. What we're seeing in the world today is the tension going from A to B. >> And also when you have that next level, you usually have entrepreneurs and sponsorships. People who sponsor entrepreneurs the promotion side of it, PR and that starts the industry. Then when it hits that level it's like, "Wow it's going to the next level." Then it gets capital markets to come in. Then you have new stake holders coming in now with government officials. This thing is just rocket-shipping big time. >> Yes >> And so, that's going to change the dynamics. Your thoughts and reaction to that dynamic. >> Completely, for example... When we do these public sprints we end up usually with a decentralized architecture that needs to built. For example, we're working with the justice system in Colombia. And the Supreme Court has asked us to come in and re-do the entire justice system. Now you think about all the court filings and court dates, and briefs, and papers all should be digitized and put on a blockchain type structure because it's all public filing. We have an opportunity to completely re-do that stack and then make that available to the rest of the world. I think that trend is irreversible for anything that previously had centered-- I mean, most government services are yes, ratifying this and ratifying that. They all disappear. >> Well Salim, I want to tap your brain for a second. Since you're here, get it out there, I want to throw a problem at you, quick real time riff with you. So one of the things that I've been thinking about is obviously look at what cloud computing did, no one saw Amazon web services early, except some of the insiders like us. Who saw it's easy to host and build a data center. "I have no money, I'm a start-up or whatever." You use AWS, EC2 and S3... They were misunderstood, now it's clear what they're doing. But that generated the DevOps movement. So question for you is, I want to riff with you on is, "Okay that created programmable infrastructure, "the notion of server-less now going mainstream." Meaning, I don't have to talk about the server, I need resource so I can just make software, make it happen. That's flipped around the old model, where it used to be the network would dictate to the applications what they could do. How is that DevOps ethos, certainly it's driven by open-source, get applied to this cryptocurrency? Because now you have blockchain, cryptocurrency, ICO is kind of an application if you will, capital market. How does that model get flipped? Is there a DevOps model, a blockchain ops model, where the decentralized apps are programming the blockchain? Because the plumbing is the moving chain right now. You got, Hashgraph's got traction, then you got Etherium, Lightning's just got 2.5 million dollars. I mean, anyone who's technical knows it's a moving train in the plumbing. But the business logic is pretty well-defined. I'm like, "I want to innovate this process. "I'm going to eliminate the efficiency." So this dynamic. Does the business model drive infrastructure? Does the plumbing drive the business model? Your thoughts on this new dynamic and how that plays out. >> I suspect you and in violent agreement here. It's always going to be lead by the business model because you need something to act as the power of pull to pull the thing along, right? The real reason for the success of Etherium right now is all the ICOs and it was a money driven thing. Today we're going to see these new stacks, now we're on version three of these new types of stacks coming along, and I think they're all looking for a business model. Once we find some new killer ops for this decentralized structure, then you'll see things happen. But the business model is where it's at. >> So basically I agree with you. I think we're on the same page here. But then advice would be to the entrepreneurs, don't fret about the infrastructure, just nail your business model because the switching cost might not be as high as you think. Where in the old days, when we grew up, you made a bad technical assess and you're out of business. So it's kind of flipped around. >> Yeah, just hearing about this term, atomic swaps. Where you can just, essentially once you have a tokenized structure, you can just move it to something else pretty quickly. Therefore, all the effort should be on that. I think finding the really compelling use cases for this world is going to be fascinating to see. >> So software-defined money, software-defined business, software defined society is coming. >> Yes >> Okay, software defined, that's the world Salim thanks for coming on, sharing your awesome expert opinon. Dave a lot a and we're excited to have our youngest guest we've ever had on the Cuban our six-year seventh year doing it 10 Maybach che who's the star of the show coding since age 5 welcome to the cube hello ok so how was the first time you wrote code well actually I was 5 and I started with FoxPro programming on a really old computer forgot who manufactured it in general with my dad's help alright so how do you feel with all these old people around you like us learning back in the old days you're the next generation so how do you feel about all this these sub celebrity status you're famous on YouTube a lot of people love your videos you've been great teacher yeah I love to help people so it feels great yeah was that what was the how many videos have you posted now I have around 80 videos 88 yes all sort of sort of self-help yeah programming here's how to yes sure and and your community is growing I presume yeah is your dad a programmer uh he he does work as a programmer yet uh-huh so is that how you first yes my first got into programming but now sometimes that you can teach my dad programmers do for iOS teaching the teachers ok so when did you surpass your dad in the in the programming really all when the Iowa my first iOS app t-tables which helps you learn multiplication tables was accepted into the iOS App Store and so right after that I started using the Internet as a tool to basically learn programming and at that point I just started learning more and more yeah and you like teaching people too so not only do you develop you also are teaching folks and you like that yes yes all right so when was the last time you push code this morning today kind of clock morning yeah oxi agile a little update for us Tim it allows you to ask another question from the result page I said what's cool about the the current stuff you're seeing here are you playing with Watson at all's Watson integrate actually I use Watson in the latest app that I've developed which I was actually presenting yesterday at the cloud Expo it's called a stem ray and so basically it you can ask it person or organization questions like who is the CEO of IBM and it should be able to answer them and so it does use IBM Watson's api's in this case relationship abstraction and natural language classifier are you using bluemix at all yes absolutely I love what makes it's really easy to use the Watson api's containers and stuff yeah I like it was a developer you feel like the services the richness of the services in bluemix so to satisfy your your general needs and yes what what more would you like to see out of bluemix well mainly out of bluemix nothing that i can think off the top of my head but for watson i really want more sort of api's don't have anything in general in specific that i can think of but more IBM watson api's would be great so you've also done some development for wearables right Apple watch is that right or yes I have developed apps that are actually I have a TGS app it's a number guessing game app for the Apple watch and iPhone on the App Store I also have developed for Mac OS X but I don't have any apps on the App Store for that yet what are you what do you think about the wearables thing is remember when Google glass came out John actually went and got with the first Google glass of your son Alec was wearing it as graduation and but they were sort of you know kind of not they were sort of awkward you know it didn't and people said I don't know you have an apple developer Kate was pretty weak at the time it wasn't coming I thought was a great first version and I love it it's it's sandbox stuff but so what do you what do you think about you know wearables the development environment yeah you encouraged about the future of them do they have a long way to go give us your thoughts on that Tanmay well to begin first of all on the Apple watch I love pretty much the portability of these sorts of devices and there's one more thing but I want sort of like the Apple watch and the Google glass it would be best if there were independent devices instead of connected to your phones they could be sort of like a Mac and an iPhone they can share data with each other but they shouldn't have to depend on each other that's one thing that I'm not too much of a fan of about them so I mean if my inference is that's a form factor related you know you can only do so much on the problem on a watch but do you I mean I know there's a lot going on in Silicon Valley with the future of the way in which we you know communicate I just wonder as a young person right you you've always been had a device like this right you're your disposal but it seems to me that using our thumbs to communicate to these devices is doesn't seem to be the right way asking the AI question yeah so exactly is is the future you know artificial intelligence what do you envision as a as a developer how are we going to communicate with these devices in the future well first of all let me just tell you our computers sort of power is not with natural language it's with math because of our human is better at sort of talking to people like we are right now not at sort of mass or live it would be harder for a human to do math but a computer can do math easier natural language you can't do whatsoever and so first of all in order to program in even asked anime it would take a lot of code and so what I can really think is we the next I don't know how many years it's going to take a long time to get to the sort of really powerful questions answering systems that can answer with a hundred percent accuracy not even hey we could do that so Tama you've been using the internet for outreach and in building a community to teach people than great the next step is you can't be everywhere so you use the internet but what about virtual reality oculus rift have you played with any of this stuff not yet but I plan on soon yes you you enticed by that yes I'm specifically excited about microsoft hololens the virtual Tanmay on the whiteboard you could be everywhere that way all right so what's the coolest language right now for you I mean I see your we heard Swift on stage you did the iOS app water what are some of the cool things well first of all I've developed as Ted may in Python and Java for the backend and HTML for the interface and PHP for the interface and back-end bridge but the most interesting language that I've ever used really is Swift huh first of all second I'd say as a close second is Java because it's portability you create something on Linux and it would almost easily work on Windows and Mac as well Chavez Chavez a good language is good for heavy lifting things yeah how about visualization are you thinking anything about rich media at all and visualization uh I'm I'll get the data you have the Swift absolute the mobile yes visualizing other media techniques with the T with math and with your truth your developer is what are you using for visualization graphics o for graphics well I'm not actually a graphic designer I'm trying to focus all more on the programming side of things but I do develop the user interface for example I actually had another app except to the a few days ago a goal setting app for which I had the same user interface then sort of graphics themselves I don't see usually hardcore fans but use you know the libraries yes 10 May you mentioned the Swift was your favorite language what's so alluring about it from a developer's perspective the syntax is great and it's really powerful which is what I love about Swift so it's easy and and powerful yes exactly so um you from Toronto right um sorry Toronto yeah how we say it right so is there a big developer community there I know there is a growing one but sorry uh well I have I don't really meet with people in person and develop together I'm more of an independent developer right now but I do definitely help people want to one on my youtube channel with really any questions or problems they have if you'd like to see my YouTube channel of course it's called Tim live action I get to answer yes when it's called Tim me back she which is my name yes okay can google it up and you'll find it I teach stuff like computing programming algorithms Watson math and science and so yeah so actually if you like an example a few days ago actually another app called speak for handicap was accepted into the iOS App Store and I developed that with von Clement which is one who is one of my subscribers and so yeah it took us a few months of hard work and we were able to even epic n' speak for handicaps it allows them to essentially speak i'm going to ask you the question so a lot of moment I have four kids to her about your age they are naturally attracted to programming it's fun it's like sports you know it's really fun for them and so that but a lot of them don't know how to way to start you had you were lucky you fell right into it five well you get that a lot of us knows you get a lot of questions on your on your YouTube channel around that you people excited for your next video but for the folks that are now seeing you and want to get in it might be a little scared can you share what you've learned and what advice would you give folks what I recommend is start out slow start doing some stuff in programming don't immediately get into the harder sort of thing start with really simple applications and don't develop when you need to develop you want to essentially programming things randomly for example I learned Swift like pretty much entirely due to the fact that first of all I'm writing a book on it it's for iOS app developers for beginners and also because I would just programming stuff randomly I didn't wait for me to need to programming something or for if I wanted to make an iOS app an order program in something for one day trader prime number checker the mastery number generator stuff like that and so just randomly anything I times it'll create a YouTube video on it to help people you could also use again a YouTube channel as sort of a place to learn programming and so use the internet as resource every developer has to pull those late nights and sometimes you pups to pull an all-nighter have you pulled an all-nighter coding that's not happy about that trouble without stuck he was doing it into the covers but also developers also struggle sometimes on the really hard problem and then the satisfaction of cracking the code or breaking through can you give us an example where you were pulling your hair out you were really focused on the problem you were kind of thrashing through it and you made it through yes actually any I could give you but the one that I remember most is during a Stanley's development at first I was using the multi processing library in Python in order to send multiple queries to relationship extraction at once but then what happened I don't know whether it was a memory management issue or something but after let's say five queries the sixth one will be painfully slow then I tried out the threading library why not and so next after around 10 queries the eleventh one will be painfully slow again I have no idea why then now this was in Python and so what I decided to do was maybe reprogram it for threading in Java and then have Python communicate with Java and so what I did is I learned job I the day because I hadn't ever touched that before because again once you went in programming basics it's really easy to move to another language and slipped in python there actually slipped in general is quite similar to Java except java's a little bit simpler and so yeah I learned drama today the next day I programmed in a simple relationship extraction threading module made a jar out of it and let Python communicate with the jar and so after that the glitch was mostly fixed it was just Python not threading properly or you could never got to the problem I was not able to find out what the problem was but I mean yeah so what kind of machine do you run he's like you driver the car multi-threading you got a lot of processors how many cores what kind of machine do you have on the attack what's your local host mic 27-inch 5k Retina iMac with 64 gigs of RAM and four cores I mean acre yeah four cores than hyper-threaded eight cores until I seven and that's good for you right now yeah you're happy with it yeah how about any external in the cloud any obviously SSD uh I don't actually I do have a wood set of course but then I don't really host anything online yet because I don't have a need for it yet but then what I'm going to make a send me public of course that I'm going to need a quite a powerful server get her to what so the industry needs your help have you thought about rewriting the Linux kernel actually I a few years ago I was I didn't really have anything to do so that's why I started YouTube but before that I actually I was really interested in operating systems i coded my little own with a hello world operating system assembly which could run on I forgot the architecture it runs on but it was quite interesting then again after that my youtube I started to take that more seriously and I didn't really have enough time to do that any projects you're working on now that excite you that you can share with us may be solving the speed of light problem actually mainly right now I've been working on as Tammy but I do have many other applications that I'm working on in an app that could help University students and developers with essentially it's an algorithm lookup if you'd like an algorithm that can help you do path finding for example you just put in path finding as a tag and some other things and then it'll give you a star dice other sort of algorithms and it uses the concept insights service and walks and I've also made a tweak classifier where you can say like let's say there's a hashtag on Twitter where there are two separate sort of things that you could talk about for example to hashtag Swift lang on Twitter at one Swift was open sourced it was there are two different types of people just talk about something general like nothing ever happened or they're talking about open sourcing let's say you wanted to see only news about Swift being open source well then you give Watson some examples of tweets that you like and sweets that you don't like and then eventually it would be able to tell you or give you tweets that you only you like it's a very hydration engine on context yes exactly an easy natural language classifier service so talk about social media I mean here at your age and what you've been through and what you know technically you have a good visit understanding of operating systems coding and all the principles of computer science but as it gets more complicated with social media people are all connected what's your view of the future going to be mean is it if Algrim is gonna solve the problem what do you think about the future how do you think about it 10 years out well first of all the world needs more programmers and I think more sort of algorithms and naturalizers processing are the means were the topics that we're going to focus on later have you ever been a Silicon Valley yes but it's so not not in a developer capacity in sort of visiting it would you like to sort of visit there yeah what does spend time with some of your your colleagues in the heart of development land John's out there your idols Steve Jobs Tim coke Bill Gates how about like I'm a software developer perspective any cult following people you love like some of the early guys coders any names that did pop to mind uh not the optimal might immediate jobs mo are you supposed in the orchestra are you running the orchestra he was a good product guy so if you can invent the product right now on the queue but would it be it would be mostly iron wrong sort of a QA system with almost a hundred percent accuracy that would be best in I state we have a hologram right here we have guests interface with us that would be cool how about that huh you are would you like to come to work for us and develop that we'd love to have you I like congratulate you on being the youngest ever cube alum we have this little community of cube you Cuban our six-year seventh year doing it ten Maybach che who's the star of the show coding since age five welcome to the cube well actually I was five and I started with Foxborough programming a really old computer forgot who manufactured it in general with my dad's help alright so how do you feel with all these old people around you like us you're the next generation so how do you feel about all this these sub celebrity status you're famous on YouTube a lot of people love your videos you've been great teacher yeah I love to help people so it feels great yeah was that what was the how many videos have you posted now I have around 80 videos 88 it's all sort of sort of self-help programming here's how to and and your community is growing I presume is your dad a programmer he does work as a programmer yes uh-huh so is that how you first first got into programming but now sometimes that you can teach my dad for teaching the teachers okay when did you surpass your dad in in the programming really when Iowa my first iOS app t-tables which helps you learn multiplication tables I was accepted into the iOS App Store and so right after that I started using the Internet as a tool to basically learn programming and at that point I just started learning more and more yeah and you like teaching people too so not only do you develop you also teaching folks and you'd like that yes yes all right so when was the last time you push code this morning today a little update for us to admit allows you to ask another question from the result page what's cool about the the current stuff you're seeing here are you playing with Watson at all Watson integrate actually I use Watson in the latest app that I've developed which I was actually presenting yesterday at the cloud Expo it's called a stamina and so basically it you can ask it person or organization questions like who is the CEO of IBM and it should be able to answer them and so it does use IBM Watson's api's in this case relationship extraction and natural language classifier are you using bluemix at all yes I love what makes it's really easy to use the Watson api's containers and so I like it was a developer you feel like the services the richness of the services in bluemix so to satisfy your your general needs and yes what what more would you like to see out of bluemix well mainly out of bluemix nothing that I can think off the top of my head but for Watson I really want more sort of api's don't have anything in general in specific that I can think of more IBM Watson api's would be great so you've also done some development for wearables right Apple watch is that right yes I have developed apps that are actually I have a to guess up it's a number guessing game app for the Apple watch and iPhone on the App Store I also have developed for Mac OS X but I don't have any apps on the App Store for that yet what are you what do you think about the wearables thing is remember when Google glass came out John actually went and got one of the first Google glass your son Alec was wearing at his graduation and but they were sort of you know kind of not they were sort of awkward you know didn't and people said have an Apple Developer Kit was pretty weak at the time there was something coming I thought was a great first version and I loved it it's it's sandbox stuff but so what do you what do you think about you know wearables the development environment yeah you encouraged about the future of them do they have a long way to go give us your thoughts on that Tanmay well we getting first of all on the Apple watch I love pretty much the portability of these sorts of devices and there's one more one thing that I sort of like the Apple watch and the Google glass it would be best if there were independent devices instead of connected to air phones they could be sort of like a Mac and an iPhone they can share data with each other but they shouldn't have to depend on each other that's one thing that I'm not too much of a fan of about them so I mean if my inference is that's a form factor related you know you can only do so much on this but do you I mean I know there's a lot going on in Silicon Valley with the future of the way in which we you know communicate I just wonder as a young person right you you've always been had a device like this right you're your disposal but it seems to me that using our thumbs to communicate to these devices is doesn't seem to be the right way it's asking the AI question yeah so exactly is is the future you know artificial intelligence what do you envision as a as a developer how are we going to communicate with these devices in the future first of all let me just tell you our computers sort of power is not with natural language it's with math because of human is better at sort of talking to people like we're right now not at sort of mass or it would be harder for a human to do math but a computer can do math easier natural language you can't do whatsoever and so first of all in order to program in even a Stanley it would take a lot of code and so what I can really think of is we for the next I don't know how many years it's going to take a long time to get through the sort of really powerful question of answering systems that can answer with a hundred percent accuracy not even here we could do that so Timmy you've been using the internet for outreach and in building a community to teach people then great the next step is you can't be everywhere so you use the internet but what about virtual reality oculus rift have you played with any of this stuff no yet but I plan on soon yes you enticed by that yes specifically excited about microsoft hololens virtual Tanmay you could be everywhere that way all right so what's the coolest language right now for you I mean I see your we heard Swift on stage you did the iOS app order what are some of the cool things as Ted made in Python and Java for the backend and HTML for the interface and PHP for the interface and back-end bridge but the most interesting language that I've ever used really is Swift first of all second I'd say as a close second is Java because it's portability you create something on Linux and it would almost easily work on the Windows and Mac as well this job is a good language for heavy lifting things how about a visualization are you thinking anything about rich media at all and visualization you have the swift absolute the mobile yes visualizing other media techniques with the T with math and with your truth your developers what are you using for visualization graphics for graphics I'm not actually a graphic designer I'm trying to focus more on the programming side of things but I do develop the user interface for example I actually had another app except of the a few days ago a goal setting app for which I had to write inside the user interface the sort of graphics themselves I don't but you know the libraries it's 10 May you mentioned the Swift is your favorite language what's so alluring about it from a developer's perspective this syntax is great and it's really powerful which is what I love about Swift so it's easy and and powerful yes exactly so you from Toronto right I'm sorry Toronto yes we say it right so is there a big developer community there I know there was a growing one but I don't really meet with people in person and develop together I'm more of an independent developer right now but I do definitely help people want to want on my youtube channel with really any questions or problems they have and if you'd like to see my youtube channel of course it's called team live actually get to it sir yes mine it's called Timmy Bakshi which is my name yes okay can google it up and you'll find it I teach stuff like computing programming algorithms Watson math and science and so yeah so actually if you like an example a few days ago actually another app called speak for handicap is accepted into the iOS App Store and I developed that with Vaughn Clement which is one who is one of my subscribers and so yeah it took us a few months of hard work and we were even that up again speak for handicaps it allows them to actually speak I'm gonna ask you the question so a lot of moma I have four kids - or about your age they are naturally attracted to programming it's fun it's like sports you know it's really fun for them and so that but a lot of them don't know how to wait a start you had you were lucky you fell right into it five what you get that a lot of ice knows you get a lot of questions on your on your YouTube channel around that you people excited for your next video but for the folks that are now seeing you and want to get in it might be a little scared can you share what you've learned and what advice would you give what I recommend is start out slow start doing some stuff in programming don't immediately get into the harder sort of thing start with really simple applications and don't develop when you need to develop you want to essentially programming things randomly for example I learned Swift like pretty much entirely due to the fact that first of all I'm writing a book on it it's for iOS app developers for beginners and also because I would just program in stuff randomly I didn't wait for me to need to programming something or for if I wanted to make an iOS app in order program and something it's one thing I trained a prime number checker the mastery number generator stuff like that and so just randomly anything I sometimes you look really YouTube video on it to help people you could also use again any YouTube channel as sort of a place to learn programming and so use resource every developer has to pull those late nights and sometimes you to pup to pull an all-nighter have you pulled an all-nighter code he was doing it into the covers but also developers also struggle sometimes on a really hard problem and then the satisfaction of cracking the code or breaking through can you give us an example where you were pulling your hair out you were really focused on the problem you were kind of thrashing through it and you made it through this actually many I could give you but the one that I remember most is during a Stanley's development at first I was using the multi processing library in Python in order to send multiple queries to relationship extraction at once but then what happened I don't know whether it was a memory management issue or something but after let's say five queries the sixth one would be painfully slow then I tried out the threading library why not and so next after around 10 queries the 11th one will be painfully slow again I have no idea why then now this was a Python and so what I decided to do was maybe reprogram it for threading in Java and then have Python communicate with Java and so what I did is I learned job I the day because I hadn't ever touched that before because again once you wanted programming basics it's really easy to move to another language and flipped and python there actually slipped in general is quite similar to Java except Java a little bit simpler and so yeah I learned drama a day the next day I programmed in a simple release abstraction threading module made a jar out of it and let Python communicate with the jar and so after that the glitch was mostly fixed it was just Python not threading properly or you could never got through the problem I was not able to find out what the problem was but I mean yeah so what kind of machine do you run it's like driving this car multi-threading you got a lot of processes how many cores what kind of machine you have on the advance your local host 27-inch 5k Retina iMac with 64 gigs of ram and 4 cores I mean 8 yeah 4 cores than hyper-threaded 8 cores until I seven and that's good for you right now yeah you're happy with it how about any external in the cloud any obviously SSD I don't actually I do have a wood set of course but then I don't really host anything online yet because I don't have a need for it yet but then what I'm going to make a semi-public of course I'm going to need a quite a powerful server you know her too so the industry needs your help have you thought about rewriting the Linux kernel years ago I was I didn't really have anything to do so that's why I started YouTube but before that I actually I was really interested in the operating systems I coated my little own with a hello world operating system assembly which could run on I forgot the architecture it runs on but it was quite interesting for them again after that my youtube I started to take that more seriously and I didn't really have enough time to do that any projects you're working on now that excite you that you can share with us maybe solving the speed of light problem or actually mainly right now I've been working on a STEMI but I do have many other applications that I'm working on including an app that could help University students and developers with essentially it's an algorithm lookup if you'd like an algorithm that can help you do path finding for example you just put in a path finding as a tag and some other things and then it'll give you a charred I sort of algorithms and it uses the concept insights service and walks and I've also made a tweet classifier where you can say like let's say there's a hashtag on Twitter where there are two separate sort of things that you could talk about for example the hashtag Swift laying on Twitter at one Swift was open sourced it was there are two different types of people just talk about soup in general like nothing ever happened or they're talking about open sourcing let's say you wanted to see only news about Swift being open source well then you give Watson some examples of tweets that you like and sweets that you don't like and then eventually it would be able to tell you or give you tweets that the only way you like variation in Jinan yes exactly and it uses the natural language classifier service so talk about social media I mean here at your age and what you've been through and what you know technically you have a good visit understanding of operating systems coding and all the principles of computer science but as it gets more complicated with social media people are all connected what's your view of the future going to be I mean is it if algorithm's gonna solve the problem what do you think about the future how do you think about it ten years out well first of all the world needs more programmers and I think more sort of algorithms and natural language processing are the means were the topics that we're going to focus on later have you ever been a Silicon Valley not not in a developer capacity just sort of visiting it would you like to sort of visit there spend time with some of your your colleagues in the heart of development John's out there your idols Steve Jobs Tim Cook Bill Gates how about like from a software developer perspective any cult following people you love like the early guys coders any names that did pop to mind jobs he was a good product guy so if you can invent the product right now on the cube what would it be it would be mostly iron wrong sort of a QA system with almost a hundred percent accuracy that would be best in 98 we have a hologram right here we have guests
