(upbeat music) >> Hey, welcome back everybody. Jeff Frick here with theCUBE. We're at our Palo Alto studios today. And obviously, what's top of the news is the coronavirus and COVID-19, and it's having a direct impact on anything where people get together. We're obviously really tied into the convention space. But we're excited to have an expert in the field coming at it from a different kind of point of view, more from the entertainment side. We'd like to welcome, calling in from Tennessee, Lauren Spahn. She is a partner for Shackelford, Bowen, McKinley, or excuse me, but yeah, McKinley & Norton. Lauren, great to see you. >> Hey there, how are ya? >> Jeff Frick: Good. So we were introduced through kind of the process of the South by Southwest cancellation. Before we get into it, tell us a little bit about kind of what you do, what type of clients do you have, who do you guys kind of represent? >> Yeah, sure, so I practice primarily in entertainment law here in Nashville. But I work with a variety of people in the music industry, whether it be artists or music festivals, record labels, publishing companies, you name it, across the US. So I do a lot of work in L.A. and New York as well. And our firm specializes in a little bit of everything, but our national hub is kind of the spearhead for the entertainment and music practice. >> So it's pretty interesting 'cause we're not so directly involved in entertainment, but we do go to a lot of conferences. And, I think, for us, the watershed moment this year was Mobile World Congress earlier this year in February, 100,000 people in Barcelona, Spain. That's a little unique because most of the main vendors are Asian in terms of all the mobile carriers and the handset tech carriers. But, you were saying before we turned the cameras on, that now the South By Southwest event cancellation is kind of sending the same shock waves if you will through the entertainment industry. >> Yeah, I mean South By Southwest obviously is a big coming together of multiple industries. You know, music, film, TV, technology, but it really was one of the first events that were canceled that impacted the music industry. And so, such a large conference to completely cancel, really just started, it was the tip of the iceberg, or I think what we are going to continue to see across the sphere in music whether its tours being canceled or music festivals that are being canceled, everything is kind of starting to ramp up, and were starting to see the effects from South By Southwest line. >> Jeff Frick: Right. So, one of the things that really is just kind of a splash of cold water, is these things are going down it just really highlights the interconnectedness of all these different parts of these events, right? whether it is the primary promoter or the primary bands in the case of South By Southwest or even the tech companies, but then there are tons and tons of secondary, third and other vendors that are involved from food and transportation and the list goes on and on. So, you're quoted quite often in the press about talking about force majeure and that this is something that kind of comes up in contract law when these types of events happen. So, I wonder if you can kind of explain the dictionary definition of force majeure and how do you see it kind of executed traditionally in a contract where maybe one person just can't uphold their part of the deal and how that contrasts with something like this, which is hitting kind of both sides of the agreement, if you will. >> Completely. So, I think it's important to step back and look at if we are going to use a music festival as an example. You have a contract, the music festival itself will have a contract with the artist, but they will also have contracts with their vendors, with the production team that comes in and sets up the staging and the sound and the light. There are a myriad of contracts and so, the language in each contract tends to govern the relationship between the festival and that third party. So, in this situation of let's use an artist, for example. There is different things in the contract that point to how you can cancel and what happens when you cancel. A force majeure is an example of that. And force majeure is something that is outside of the control of both parties. So, again, the festival and the artist. If something like the Coronavirus is coming, neither one of those parties can control that from happening. And so it typically relieves both parties of any obligation to move forward with the contract. What is important, though, is the language that's in that force majeure provision. So, you sometimes will see language like sickness or an epidemic. But then, you may not have that, and you may have language that says, a local or national state of emergency. So, depending upon the state you're in, depending upon the exact situation in the city that you are holding the event, all of those things can be looked or looked to to interpret whether or not the language that's in that force majeure contract will impact you or will give you the rights to cancel that event without having to pay additional money. >> Jeff Frick: Right. >> And so, you know, not only that but you're then seeing it carried out through the insurance policies, as well. So, even if you have force majeure language whether or not the insurance company will help cover the losses for you again depends upon the exact language that's in your insurance policy. >> Jeff Frick: Right. >> So, across the board, it really is a contractual right, that can differ for the different people that are involved. >> Right. But, there's the contractual, the language in the contract, but then there is kind of this random stuff that comes up. And, we hear kind of act of God kind of thrown up by insurance companies when it's something they haven't defined in all the fine language. And then, the other piece that we're hearing about a lot in the news here on Palo Alto, right is the specific descriptive terms used by the authorities. Is it a pandemic? Is it an outbreak? Is it a natural disaster? Is it a state of emergency called by the government? >> Or other. So, how does that figure in on something like we're experiencing? I don't know that we've seen anything quite like this before. >> You know, I was looking back through some contracts earlier this morning because I had a potential cancellation that was going to happen, and I mean some contracts go as far as to even describe the Swine Flu and similar things like that but we really are looking to the authorities to see what decision they are making on everything. And whether or not they are calling it a local state of emergency because a lot of times that exact definition or that exact cause is defined in the agreement . But, yeah, I mean really it comes down to small print wording in this situation, if you are looking at the contract itself to see what rights that you have. What I found is that people aren't going to the nitty gritty of at least the contracts, you're probably going to get into the nitty gritty of the insurance policy, if you have a chance of getting any kind of protection. But, at the end of the day, the artist doesn't want to go play a festival that could potentially cause their fans to have some outbreak of the Coronavirus. An event doesn't want to be liable for holding an event that could be connected with that, as well, because across the board, that creates a PR nightmare for whoever's making that decision. So, you're seeing people that are trying to work together to figure out exactly how we're going to handle things, and what we're going to do moving forward, because no one is going to win in this situation. >> [Jeff Frick} Right. Right. >> It's really just figuring out a way that we can all be in the best position possible across the board. >> Yeah. And I think that's what we're kind of seeing a lot too, where, you know, I think everyone is again instead of just one party that's not upholding their part of the deal and the other party getting screwed on that, this is really, you know, we're kind of in it together, this has kind of come down on both of our houses so how do we work together to minimize the pain and at least, kind of get through this window that we assume will pass at some point or at least the current heightened state will go. But, I just wonder if you have an opinion on, from a legal point of view, and it's not your space, so if you say no that's an okay answer, but, you know, if you look at kind of market forces is determining what is the appropriate action, right? Because we don't really know what's the right action. But, clearly, the market is defined based on activity and the University of Washington shutting down and Stanford shutting down >> Vanderbilt >> Almost is a self-imposed kind of semi-quarantine state, which is just, you know the latest now I think they get the local high school basketball game is they can only have 100 people in the stands in the biggest building they can find and everybody needs to spread out. So, it's just been very interesting to see you know kind of what is the appropriate response. What's the right response? Because ultimately it seems like it's driven by nobody wants to be the one that didn't take the max precautions and something bad happens. >> To be honest, I don't think that anyone really knows. You know, it really is the conversations right now are not the artist's agent calling the festival and saying we're absolutely not doing this The conversation is more so, hey what are you guys seeing? What are you guys thinking? What's the best way to handle this? You know, no one wants to put the consumers and the fans at risk. And, you know, until we have a better handle on exactly how we handle this type of situation, it's really going to be people doing their best to try to not create a situation that's going to, you know, cause some kind of massive outbreak. >> Right. Right. >> If you look at, you know, something like South By, no one wants to cancel, you know. It really impacts, not only the company and the event itself, but really everyone that's associated to it, has a financial hardship because of that decision, but the decision isn't made because someone wants to do it, it's made because collectively, you know, people are feeling like it needs to be done in order to keep people safe. >> Right. >> And if they didn't think that, they'd probably go ahead and try to hold the event and, you know, risk the liability. But, I think people truly want what's in the best interest of everyone. And that's why they are working together to try to figure this out. >> Yeah. Yeah. It really is driven home what social creatures we are when you start to kind of disconnecting crowds and groups of people from so many events and it just continues to ripple through whether it's our business, a convention business, the entertainment business, you know March Madness is coming up here in a very short order. What's going to happen there all the way down to you know, the local talent show for the local middle schoolers that they used to have before graduation, which is now canceled. So, it's interesting times. >> And I think for us, the biggest indicator in terms of just music festivals is going to be what happens with Coachella. And, you know, Billboard and Variety have reported that they're looking to potentially reschedule the event to October, if artists are able. And if not, they're going to have to completely cancel it for this year. And, you know, Coachella is such a massive festival that attracts people from all over the world. And if Coachella is canceled then I think there is a good chance that so long as this is continuing at the speed it is, that we're going to see a lot more music festivals canceled. >> When is Coachella scheduled? >> It starts in about a month. >> In about a month. >> So it's the second weekend in April, but they have to start production and really building out the grounds now. >> Wow. Wow. >> And so the decision kind of has to be made before then. And then, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a decision there in the next few days. >> Yeah. I think I would take the short if I was in Vegas, because there's just not enough data, I don't think, to go forward based on the current situation. I'm glad I'm not the one sitting in that chair. >> Yeah. It'd be a tough position. >> All right, well Lauren, well thank you for sharing your insight and, you know, it's great to get the perspective of another you know kind of industry that's all built around bring people together. And, I think we probably both would agree that this time will pass and we'll get a vaccine out, we'll get the growth curves to start to flatten out and go down which is where they need to go. And then you know I think it will be a different time, but hopefully things will get approximate a little bit more to normal in the not too distant future. >> Yeah, fingers crossed. I hope it gets figured out sooner rather than later and we can all have our summers full of conferences and festivals and the gathering of people. >> Yep. All right Lauren. Brought to you by Dell Technologies, and it's ecosystem partners. >> Hello everyone, welcome back, live CUBE coverage here in Las Vegas with Dell Technology World 2019. I'm John Furrier with Dave Vellante. Dave, winding down three days of wall-to-wall coverage. We've got two senior executives from Dell Technologies here with us, Greg Bowen, Senior Vice President, CTO of Office of the CIO Dell Technologies and Garry Wiseman, Senior Vice President, office of the CIO. Guys, welcome to theCUBE, good to see you. >> Thank you. >> Great to be here. >> So, we had Howard on, we had the CFO Tom Sweet on, digital experience is a big part of it. On the news announcements, a lot of Cloud stuff, but also a lot of, you know, workplace, workforce, human resource kind of vibe around Client Edge, digital technologies, unified workspaces, all pointing to the benefits of what Cloud and data can do, ultimately at the end of the day, that's what drive great value in apps, but also, user experience. I mean, people are workin', they're mobile, this is one of the core themes of the show. You guys have a digital, Dell Digital Way kind of mission. What is that about, tell us about that, 'cause you're doing it in internally, you're not even dog footing, you're building it out in real time, rolling it out, take us through the digital, the Dell Digital Way. >> Yeah, so the Dell Digital Way. If you guys ever Google digital transformation, good luck. The first six or seven results are all paid. Someone's trying to sell you the story on digital transformation. We're out there and you know, we're doing it all ourselves. We go to market with the IT transformation, workforce transformation, security and application transformation. A lot of people are choosing to do those one or two at a time. We're trying to do it all at the same time. So we had to develop a way that will allow us to accelerate our path through that, and we call it the Dell Digital Way. It's really a people process and technology transformation that allows us to change our underlying culture, really the way we interact with the business. Start with the business and the User first, and then work backwards from that. So the people part, it's really taking things from big functional silos that have a lot of matrix overlays, and creating small balance teams that own their code. On process, it's taking very large programs that are just generating risk all the way up and breaking those down into small deliverables where you have very low risk. And then on the technology side, this is where we are drinking our own champagne. We're actually employing our reference architecture from VMware and Pivotal all the way through the DM, Dell EMC technologies in our own data centers, So we can operate as a multi Cloud environment as well. >> So it's not just an announcement from the top saying, okay, just go digital. We're hearing from some of the insiders in the hallways here at the conference, it's hardcore. It's training, agile training, and this is not just you know, talk, talk, talk. You guys are actually getting it done with the training. How important has that been? Because at the end of the day, everyone's has all these kind of, they talk the talk, but might not walk the walk. >> It's training and getting the people right. At the end of the day, we have to change 10,000 hearts and minds in order to transform. And that means you have to touch those people, and you have to actually train them to operate in the new world. If you don't do that, you can put all the technology you want into the environment, if they don't know how to use it, it does you no good. So we're starting with getting our people up skilled, getting them trained. We're taking program managers, putting them through full stack developer training. We've got our first 60 that are going to be graduating this summer. And then we're training the rest of them on the Pivotal Way. So that's really about starting with that customer and working backwards, user centered design. >> How do people get the, how do, how do companies get the people's side right? Because you know, we all kind of work the big companies, you guys are a lot bigger. Now that Dell Technologies, where head of the old world was oh, let's reorganize, it's not working. You reorganize as a matrix organization. You know what agile teams, a lot of kind of HR issues that if someone might be great on one team, not great on another, and so it's really about the attraction of talent, retaining talent, knowing when someone's a fit. Is this ad hoc? How you guys get that right? Because that seems to be a big part of it. Because you got to be agile. You don't be doing reorders after the fact Oh, we didn't post the numbers. We weren't successful. Let's reorder, which means failure. So how do you guys get that right? >> I think it's partly skills assessment going in, right? You actually know which people are right for which skills and there's really key, three key skills in this. There's a product manager, the product designer and engineering. And then there's a lot of people that come into the balanced team after the fact. So it's really understanding where your teams are today, and then getting and finding paths for them in the future. I don't know if you have any. >> Well, I also have to say, obviously, being a company that presents itself as one that's modern, from a development standpoint, our infrastructure a place where really the next generation of developer or product manager or designer wants to come and work because they can see how we're really, you know, operating in this, this digital age, is another key thing for us to make sure that as we, as we recruit folks, particularly as we look at college hires, you know, they're looking for those types of places to come to work. And so part of it's the workplace we'd make sure that we have a modern looking workspace, we have, you know, open seating areas, we have lots of collaboration spaces for people to get together in. And then, of course, with the technologies, we're very lucky to have such a rich set of technologies available within the company itself. So we have, you know, the Pivotal methodology we use, but we have Pivotal Cloud Foundry, which is a great way for people to go and build applications and run them in the Cloud. We actually have all of the the things from a security standpoint that help us make sure that our customer data is secure. And so we can give them that insight as we bring them in, if we're trying to recruit people like, you know, the college hires as well as other industry folks that we're trying to track, that we're in this, this big motion and we have scale. Right, that's the, that's the one big difference. >> South of the playbook then is the playbook to get this right as core team. Get that core fabric of the, whatever the objective is, product engineering, and then put tuning people through. And cross pollinating based upon what the situation might be. I need a little Cloud, I need a little bit of hyper convergence. So you kind of, it's kind of like a combined workout. It's kind of like sports. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, I think you know, as Howard had mentioned previously, on some the other sessions, with such a large organization, there are people who are going to be, you know, really game for the change and really want to, you know, shift towards this new way of working. There are folks that are curious, and then there's a small percentage that may decide that this is not a journey they want to be a part of. And so it's really as we go through those, those motions of saying, here are the plans of where we want to go. Who are the people that are going to opt in? And who do we want to help you to move forward from a skills perspective? >> So a couple of challenges that I, that I see, I wonder if you could help us understand how you address, you've got the business, users, apps, and then the tech comes last. Okay, makes sense. But you've got, I'm sure there are a lot of similarities across, how big is Dallas? Like hundreds of thousands of people? Lot of similarities, but there's also some unique requirements. So how do you deal with that? You try to find the overlaps and say, Okay 60%, you know, nail it, and the others, you know, maybe we build snowflakes or maybe we just burned some bridges. How do you guys address those dissimilarities? >> So the good news is, the frameworks that we're building, and the decentralization of decision making allows you to address some of those dissimilarities. We've got applications that have built ground up Cloud native, they're a green field, they've started in the Cloud, they started on PCF. And they are perfectly, really prepared for this journey. We have other applications that have been sitting in the data center for decades, right? And, and everything in between. We found that we can create technology pipelines that can actually get all those applications to production the same way. So there's one thing out of the way, the building process of writing software and deploying it to production standardized. The next step is when you decentralize decision making and you get the product teams to own their code, you get better decisions. So it's about creating a framework that allows you to handle the variety of challenges and use cases that are thrown at you. >> Okay, so you're also a 35 year old company, you got, there's all this technical debt hanging around. How do you deal with that? Maybe you could give some examples of situations where you said, Okay, this part of the portfolio, we're going to leave alone, maybe some old cobalt mainframe. You're not that old, (laughing) Oracle database, and we're not going to touch that. But, but how do you deal with that technical debt challenge? >> Yeah. >> Well, you know, the way we've looked at it is really, where's the need for us to move fast? Because when you look at digital transformation, it's really about making sure that yes, we're customer centric, we have high quality, but also that we can move quickly with the new expected speeds of business. And so we've looked at it in the respect that a lot of the customer facing type of environment, so dell.com, or our b2b site for customers, or anything that's service facing, those are the ones that we want to make sure we focus on iterating quickly versus, you know, the order management system per se. So the order management system, you know, it's, it's an area that we're working on from a transformation standpoint, but it's not as critical to be able to move as quick there to keep up with customer features that they're expecting in this digital age. And so we we look at it from a portfolio standpoint, and again, from an outcome perspective, and where do we want to have an impact with the customers or the employees will feel most immediately? And so that's how we prioritize things in the question. >> Another question, John, I like to ask guys like you, you mentioned drinking your own champagne before, but, well, a lot of times, you know, the product guys are coming to you with, you know, things that are in beta perhaps, champagnes not quite ready yet. (laughing) >> That's want to be champagne, you know. >> So you, I'm sure, have a lot of people trying to hey, try this out, you guys are busy. You're trying to, you know, drive, you know, company value. What role do you play in that regard? In terms of beta testing? You know, do people love you, do they hate you? You like, you tell on them? How does that all work? >> We should be our first and best customer, and actually our hardest one. So, you know, we've actually taken some of the container technology and run it through its paces. And early revs of that just wasn't ready for us. But we did put it into a non production environment and started working on okay, how can we utilize this, for maybe non production workloads, some of the DevOps stuff, we're just needing, say, runners in a container to move code from point A to point B, so we can start flexing it, and exercising it and give feedback where, you know what, it's not going to really handle some of our production workloads. But here's what you need to do. So we want to be the first and hardest customer. >> Yeah, I was going to say it's not always a negative in that, yes, we might encounter issues. So we've we've adopted PCF, the Pivotal Cloud Foundry a lot over the last year and applications. And yes, we discovered things that either it couldn't do, or other issues with, and the fact that we have that close relationship with the product team, we can actually ask for new features that they will actually then go ahead and develop for us in order to support our business. >> I presume there's such a large portfolio, you have to be somewhat selective, right? You can't just take every new product, okay. And so how do you measure the value? What are the key metrics that you're trying to lever? >> Yeah, so when we went and did this, we built a business case, right? Because it's a sizable investment. And we look at adoption of behaviors. So are you adopting the methodology, the Agile pivotal methodology? Are you adopting test driven development, then how does that impact our key performance indicators? Are we reducing user incidents and production incidents? Are we getting stories from the business into production faster? Or is the velocity picking up? And then all of those outcomes lead to the business outcomes. Are we reducing our total spend? Are we becoming more technology focused, more development focused, then say program management focused, so we have a nice cascade of adoption of behaviors key performance indicator changes, and then actually business metric outcomes. >> You guys make it sound so easy. >> Right, Greg and Garry, thanks for spending the time. I know you guys have a hard stop. But I want to get you know, one last, a couple quick questions in. One of the things we're hearing is integration, that part of the whole Dell transformation, a lot of glue layer in the past, lot of SI like work being done in IT. How is that going for you guys? How is the heavy lifting of rolling out consistent infrastructure been? And what kind of experiences is that throwing off for you guys, for the end users? >> So I mean, I'd say, although I've only been at the company for the last couple years, you know, I'm a Dell Technologies employee, not necessarily from, from either business before, but from what I've observed, and from what I've seen so far, integration is actually going very well from a systems perspective for both the companies coming together at scale. We have a North Star. So we have a strategy to make sure that where we have multiple systems we want to end up with, with a single system. We're working towards that over the years. And likewise with the infrastructure. We have data centers that we're using, you know, now across different locations, from both the entities as they came together, that we're continuing to optimize and modernize using the latest Dell technology. So, from my perspective, as someone that came into the company a couple years ago, it's very impressive at how well-- >> That, that's where the efficiencies are going to be right there too, right? >> Yes, it's amazing the same of the same, the sales tools as we're integrating those, and making sure that we have tools where the salespeople can sell the whole portfolio across Dell Technologies is another great thing. >> IT guy told me one time, he says "we're in business when we're out of business". >> Correct. Meaning, you've got that heavy lifting out of the way and shifting to the higher value, you know, capabilities with AI, machine learning, do much more higher crafted things. You guys see it the same way. Not that you're out of business, but you know what I'm saying, when you're invisible, it's good, right? >> Our job is to enable the business ultimately, and if no one knows we're there, that's when it's actually working the best. >> Alright guys, thanks so much real quick, go down the line. What is the, take your IT hats off, take your CIO hats off, put your tech hat on, industry participant observer. What is the most important stories being told here at Dell technology? What's the big takeaway? What's the most important stories? >> Yeah, for me, I also own our AI capabilities and Dell digital. So for us, it's just that, that huge amount of data that's being created on a daily basis, and using technology to do something with it. And I think, you know, you have to be ready and prepared for that. So for me, that's one of the biggest takeaways. >> Garry. >> I would simply say that, you know, the dream, I'll be able to run workloads in, whether it's your own infrastructure, or multiple Clouds that are out there and manage it in a single place. That's one of my big takeaways now that we've, we've released that with the, the Dell Cloud. >> Operational seamlessness and then using data to have specialism in apps in every industry that's unique. Tailor is horizontally scalable, but vertically specialized, very, it's like a whole new world. >> Yeah, very exciting. >> Guys, Congratulations, exciting news. And what happens when you bring together the scientific know how of a global bias Bio pharmaceutical powerhouse in Takeda, a leading cloud services provider in AWS and Accenture's ability to innovate, execute and deliver innovation, Joining me to talk about these things we have Aaron. Sorry. Arjun, baby. He is the senior managing director and chairman of Accenture's Diamond Leadership Council. Welcome margin, you Carl Hick. He is the chief digital and information officer at Takeda. >>Pleasure to be here. Thank you. Rebecca >>and Brian Bowen, global director and head of the Accenture AWS Business Group at Amazon Web services. Thanks so much for coming. Thank you. So, as I said, we're talking today about this relationship between your three organizations. Carl, I want to talk with you. I know you're at the beginning of your cloud journey. What was the compelling reason Why? Why I moved to the cloud and why now? >>Yeah. No, thank you for the question. So you know as ah, bio pharmaceutical leader were committed toe bringing better health and a brighter future to our patients. We're doing that by translating science and toe some really innovative and life transporting therapies. But throughout, you know, we believe that there's, ah responsible use of technology of data and of innovation. And those three ingredients air really key to helping us deliver on that promise. And so, you know, while I think I'll call it this Cloud Journeys already has always been a part of our strategy. Andi have made some pretty steady progress over the last years with a number of local it diverse approaches to the digital in AI. We just weren't seeing the impact at scale that we wanted to see. Andi, I think that you know, there's a there's a need ultimately to accelerate and broaden that shift. And, you know, we were commenting on this earlier, but there's, you know, it's been highlighted by a number of factors. One of those has been certainly a number of the large acquisitions we've made Shire being the most pressing example, but also the global pandemic. Both of those highlight the need for us to move faster at the speed of cloud ultimately on. So we started thinking outside of the box because it was taking us too long and we decided to leverage the strategic partner model on. It's giving us a chance to think about our challenges very differently. We call this the power of three on. Ultimately, our focus is singularly on our patients. I mean, they're waiting for us. We need Thio. Get there faster. It can take years. And so I think that there is a focus on innovation at a rapid speed so we can move ultimately from treating conditions to keeping people healthy. >>So as you are embarking on this journey, what are some of the insights you want to share about? About what you're seeing so far? >>Yeah. No, it's a great question. So I mean, look, maybe right before I highlight some of the key insights, I would say that, you know, with Cloud now as the as a launchpad for innovation, you know, our vision all along has been that in less than 10 years we want every single to Kito associate. We're employees to be empowered by an AI assistant. And I think that, you know that's gonna help us make faster, better decisions that will help us. Uh, fundamentally, you know, deliver transformative therapies and better experiences to to that ecosystem, to our patients, to positions to payers, etcetera much faster than we previously thought possible. Um, and I think that technologies like cloud and edge computing together with a very powerful or call it data fabric is gonna help us to create this this really time. I'll call it the digital ecosystem. The data has to flow ultimately seamlessly between our patients and providers or partners or researchers. Etcetera. Uh, and so we've been thinking about this, Uh, call it. We call it sort of this pyramid. Um, that helps us describe our vision on a lot of it has to do with ultimately modernizing the foundation, modernizing and re architect ing the platforms that drive the company, heightening our focus on data, which means that there's an accelerated shift towards enterprise data platforms and digital products. And then, ultimately, a, you know, really an engine for innovation. Sitting at the very top, um, and So I think with that, you know, there's a few different I'll call it insights that you know are quickly kind of come zooming into focus. I would say one is this need to collaborate very differently. Um, you know, not only internally, but you know, how do we define ultimately and build a connected digital ecosystem with the right partners and technologies? Externally, I think the second component that maybe people don't think as much about but, you know, I find critically important is for us to find ways of really transforming our culture. We have to unlock talent and shift the culture, certainly as a large biopharmaceutical, very differently. And then, lastly, you've touched on it already. Which is, you know, innovation at the speed of cloud. How do we re imagine that you know how Doe ideas go from getting tested in months? That kind of getting tested in days, you know, how do we collaborate very differently on So I think those air three, perhaps of the larger chocolate insights that you know the three of us are spending a lot of time thinking about right now. >>So, Arjun, I want to bring you into this conversation a little bit. Let's let's delve into those a bit. Talk first about the collaboration that Carl was referencing there. How how have you seen that it is enabling colleagues and teams to communicate differently, interact in new and different ways, both internally and externally. As Carl said, >>No, thank you for that. And I've got to give called a lot of credit because as we started to think about this journey, it was clear was a bold ambition. It was, uh, something that, you know, we had all to do differently. And so the concept of the power of three that Karl has constructed has become a label for us as a way to think about what are we going to do to collectively drive this journey forward? And to me, the unique ways of collaboration means three things. The first one is that what is expected is that the three parties they're going to come together, and it's more than just the sum of our resource is, and by that I mean that we have to bring all of ourselves all of our collective capabilities as an example. Amazon has amazing supply chain capabilities there. One of the best at supply chain. So in addition to Resource is when we have supply chain innovations, that's something that they're bringing in addition to just talent and assets. Similarly, for Accenture, right, we do a lot in the talent space. So how do we bring our thinking as to how we apply best practices for talent to this partnership? So as we think about this, so that's that's the first one. The second one is about shared success. Very early on in this partnership, we started to build some foundations and actually develop seven principles that all of us would look at it as the basis for this success shared success model. And we continue to hold that sort of in the forefront as we think about this collaboration. And maybe the third thing I would say is this one team mindset. So whether it's the three of our CEO's that get together every couple of months to think about this partnership or it is the governance model that Karl has put together, which has all three parties in the governance and every level of leadership, we always think about this as a collective group so that we can keep that front and center. And what this, I think, ultimately has enabled us to do Is it allowed us to move its speed, be more flexible and ultimately all be looking at the target the same way the North south? The same way. >>Brian. What? What about you? What have you observed? What are you thinking about? In terms of how this is helping teams collaborate differently? >>Yeah, absolutely. And Georgia made some great points there. And I think if you really think about what he's talking about, it's that diversity of talent, diversity of skill and viewpoint and even culture. Right? And so we see that in the power of three. And I think if we drilled down into what we see at Takeda and frankly, Takeda was really, I think, pretty visionary and on their way here, right, and taking this kind of cross functional approach and applying it to how they operate day to day. So moving from a more functional view of the world to more of a product oriented view of the world, right? So when you think about, we're gonna be organized around a product or service or capability that we're gonna provide to our customers are patients or donors. In this case, it implies a different structure, although altogether in a different way of thinking. Right, because now you've got technical people in business experts and marketing experts all working together in This is sort of a cross collaboration, and what's great about that is it's really the only way to succeed with Cloud, right, because the old ways of thinking where you've got application people in infrastructure, people and business people is sub optimal, right, because we can all access this tools and capabilities. And the best way to do that isn't across kind of a cross collaborative way. And so this is product oriented mindset of Takeda was already on, I think is allowed us to move faster in those areas. >>Carl, I wanna go back to this idea of unlocking talent and culture, and this is something that both Brian and origin have talked about. Two people are are an essential part of their at the heart of your organization. How will their experience of work change and how are you helping reimagine and reinforce a strong organizational culture, particularly at this time when so many people are working remotely. >>Yeah, that's a great question. And it's something that, you know, I think we all have to think a lot about. I mean, I think, you know, driving this this call this this digital and data kind of capability building takes a lot of a lot of thinking. So I mean, there's a few different elements in terms of how we're tackling this one is we're recognizing. And it's not just for the technology organization or for those actors that that we're innovating with. But it's really across, you know, all of Takeda. We're working through ways of raising what I'll call the overall digital leaders literacy of the organization. You know, what are the, You know, what are the skills that are needed almost at a baseline level, even for, ah, global biopharmaceutical company? And how do we deploy? I'll call it Those learning resource is very broadly, and then secondly, I think that, you know, we're very clear that there's a number of areas where they're very specialized skills that are needed. Uh, my organization is one of those, and so, you know, we're fostering ways in which you know, were very kind of quickly kind of creating avenues, excitement for for associates in that space. So one example specifically is we use, you know, during these very much sort of remote sort of days, we use what we call global it me days, and we set a day aside every single month and this last Friday. Um, you know, we create during that time, it's time for personal development. Um, and we provide active seminars and training on things like, you know, robotic process automation, Data Analytics Cloud. Uh, in this last month, we've been doing this for months and months now, but in his last month, more than 50% of my organization participated. And there's this huge positive shift, both in terms of access and excitement about really harnessing those new skills and being able to apply them on. So I think that that's, you know, 11 element that can be considered. And then thirdly, of course, every organization has to work on. How do you prioritize talent, acquisition and management and competencies that you can't re skill? I mean, there's just some new capabilities that we don't have, And so there's a large focus that I have with our executive team in our CEO and thinking through those critical roles that we need to activate in order kind of thio build on this, uh, this business led cloud transformation and lastly, probably the hardest one. But the one that I'm most jazzed about is really this focus on changing the mindsets and behaviors. Andi, I think there, you know, this is where the power of three is really kind of coming together nicely. E mean, we're working on things like, you know, how do we create this patient obsessed curiosity? Um, and really kind of unlock innovation with a really kind of a growth mindset, Uh, and the level of curiosity that's needed not to just continue to do the same things, but to really challenge the status quo. So that's one big area of focus. We're having the agility toe act just faster. I mean, toe worry less. I guess I would say about kind of the standard chain of command, but how do you make more speedy, more courageous decisions? And this is places where we can emulate the way that ah, partner like AWS works? Or how do we collaborate across the number of boundaries, you know, and I think origin spoke eloquently to a number of partnerships that we can build so we can break down some of these barriers and use these networks. Um, whether it's within our own internal ecosystem or externally, to help to create value faster. So a lot of energy around ways of working we'll have to check back in. But, I mean, we're early in on this mindset and behavioral shift, but a lot of good early momentum. >>Carl, you've given me a good segue to talk to Brian about innovation because you said a lot of the things that I was the customer obsession and this idea of innovating much more quickly. Obviously. Now the world has its eyes on drug development, and we've all learned a lot about it in the past few months. And accelerating drug development is all of is of great interest to all of us. Brian How does a transformation like this help a company's ability to become more agile and more innovative? Add quicker speed to >>Yeah, No, absolutely. And I think some of the things that Karl talked about just now are critical to that. Right? I think, where sometimes you know, folks fall short is they think, you know, we're going to roll out the technology and the technology is going to be the Silver Bullet, where, in fact it is. The culture it is is the talent, and it's the focus on that. That's going to be, you know, the determinant of success. And I will say, You know, in this power of three arrangement, Karl talked a lot about the pyramid, um, talent and culture and that change. And that kind of thinking about that has been a first class citizen since the very beginning. Right? That absolutely is critical for being there. Um and so that's been that's been key. And so we think about innovation at Amazon and AWS, and Carl mentioned some of things that, you know, partner like AWS can bring to the table is we talk a lot about builders, right? So we're kind of obsessive about builders, Onda. We mean what we mean by that is way at Amazon, we hire for builders, we cultivate builders and we like to talk to our customers about it as well. And it also implies a different mindset. Right? When you're a builder, you have that curiosity. You have that ownership. You have that steak and whatever I am creating. I'm going to be a co owner of this product or the service right getting back to that kind of product oriented mindset. And it's not just the technical people or the I t. People who are builders. It is also the business people, as Karl talked about right. So when we start thinking about innovation again, where we see folks kind of get into a little bit of innovation, pilot paralysis is that you can focus on the technology. But if you're not focusing on the talent and the culture and the processes and the mechanisms, you're gonna be putting out technology. But you're not gonna have an organization that's ready to take it and scale and accelerated right, and so that's that's been absolutely critical. So just a couple of things we've been doing with with Takeda indicate, has really been leading the way is think about a mechanism and a process, and it's really been working backwards from the customer, right? In this case again, the patient and the donor. And that was an easy one because a key value of decadas is to be a patient focused biopharmaceutical, right? So that was embedded in their DNA. So that working back from that, that patient, that donor was a key part of that process. And that's really deep in our DNA as well in eccentrics. And so we're able to bring that together. The other one is, is getting used to experimenting and even perhaps failing right and being able to reiterate and fail fast and experiment and understanding that you know some decisions, what we call it at Amazon or to a doors meaning you could go through that door not like what you see and turn around and go back. And cloud really helps there. Because the cost of experimenting and the cost of failure is so much lower than it's ever been. You could do it much faster, and the implications there so much less so just a couple of things that we've been really driving with a kid around innovation that's been really critical. >>Carl, where are you already seeing signs of success? >>Yeah, No, it's a great question. And so we chose, you know, with our focus on innovation to try to unleash maybe the power of data digital in uh, focusing on what I call sort of a maid. And so we chose our plasma derived therapy business. Um and you know, the plasma drive therapy business unit? It develops critical lifesaving therapies for patients with a rare and complex diseases. Um, but what we're doing is by bringing kind of our energy together, we're focusing on creating called State of the art digitally connected donation centers. And we're really modernizing. You know, the donor experience right now we're trying Thio improve. Also, I'll call it the overall Plasma Collection process. And so we've selected a number of uncle at very high speed pilots that were working through right now specifically in this in this area, and we're seeing really great results already on DSO. That's that's one specific area of focus. >>Arjun, I want you to close this out here. Any ideas? Any best practices advice you would have for other pharmaceutical companies that are that are at the early stage of their cloud journey. >>Sorry. Was that for me? >>Yes. Sorry. Urgent? >>Yeah. No, I was breaking up a bit. No, I think the key is what sort of been great for me to see is that when people think about cloud, you know, you always think about infrastructure technology. The reality is that the cloud is really the true enabler for innovation at innovating at scale. And if you think about that, right and all the components that you need, ultimately, that's where the value is for the company, right? Because, yes, you're gonna get some cost synergies, and that's great. But the true value is And how do we transform the organization? The case of Takeda and a life sciences clients, right. We're trying to take a 14 year process of research and development that takes billions of dollars and compress that right. Tremendous amounts of innovation, opportunity. You think about the commercial aspect, lots of innovation can come that the plasma derived therapy is a great example of how we're gonna really innovate to change the trajectory of that business. So I think innovation is at the heart of what most organizations need to do. And the formula the cocktail that Takeda has constructed with this Fuji program really has all the ingredients, um, that are required for that success. >>Great. Well, thank you so much. Steve Spear is here, he's an author, MIT professor, author of The High Velocity Edge, welcome to The Cube, thanks for coming on. >> Oh, thanks for having me. >> I got to tell you, following Phil Black, you were coming onstage, I have never heard you speak before, I said, "Oh, this poor guy," and you did awesome, you were great, you held the audience, so congratulations, you were very dynamic and he was unbelievable and you were fantastic, so. >> Today was second-worst speaking setup, one time I was on a panel where it was three admirals, a general, and then the other guy wearing a suit, I said, "Well at least another schmo in a suit," and his opening lines were, "You know, this reminds me, "when I was on the space shuttle and we were flying "to the Hubble," and I'm like, "A flipping astronaut, "I got to follow an astronaut?" So anyway, this was only a SEAL, there were a lot of them, there were far fewer astronauts, so that was easy. >> What I really liked about your talk is, first of all, you told the story of Toyota, which I didn't know, you may. >> No, my experience with Toyota was in the early '70s, I remember the Toyota sort of sweeping into the market but you talked about 20 years before it when they were first entering and how this really was a company that had a lot of quality problems and it was perceived as not being very competitive. >> Yeah, Toyota now people look at as almost, they just take for granted the quality, the productivity, they assume good labor relations and that kind of thing, it's non-unionized, not because the unions haven't tried to unionize, but the employees don't feel the need. And again, in the '50s, Toyota was absolutely an abysmal auto-maker, their product was terrible, their productivity was awful and they didn't have particularly good relations with the workforce either. I mean, it's a profound transformation. >> And you gave this test, in the 50s, I forget what it was, it was one-tenth the productivity of the sort of average automobile manufacturer and then they reached parity in '62, by '68 they were 2X, and by '73, they were off the charts. >> Right, right, right. >> Right, so amazing transformation and then you try to figure out how they did it and they couldn't answer, but they said, "We can show you," right? And that sort of led to your research and your book. >> Yeah, so the quick background is in some regards, this fellow Kenneth Bowen, who was my mentor and advisor when I was doing my doctorate, he could argue we were late to the game because people started recognizing Toyota as this paragon of virtue, high quality at low cost, and so that in the 1980s prompted this whole investigation and the term lean manufacturing came out of the realization that on any given day, Toyota and suppliers were making basically twice the product with half the effort and so you had this period of '85 to about '95 where there was this intense attempt to study Toyota, document Toyota, imitate Toyota, General Motors had a joint venture with Toyota, and then you have the mid-'90s and there's no second Toyota, despite all this investment, so we go to the Toyota guys and say, "Look, clearly if everyone is studying you, imitating you, "copying you, and they haven't replicated you, "they've missed something, so what is it?" And they say, "I'm sorry, but we can't tell you." And we said, "Well you got to be kidding, I mean, "you have a joint venture with your biggest competitor, "General Motors," and they said, "No, no, it's not that we wouldn't tell you, "we just actually don't know how to explain what we do "'cause most of us learn it in this very immersive setting, "but if you'd like to learn it, "you can learn it the way we do." I didn't realize at the time that it would be this Karate Kid wax-on, wax-off, paint-up, paint-down experience, which took years and years to learn and there are some funny anecdotes about it but even at the end, their inability to say what it is, so I went years trying to capture what they were doing and realizing I was wrong 'cause different things wouldn't work quite right, and I can tell you, I was on the Shinkansen with the guy who was my Toyota mentor and I finally said, "Mr. Oba, I think I finally "figured it out, it all boils down to these basic "approaches to seeing and solving problems." And he's looking over my cartoons and stuff and he says, "Well, I don't see anything wrong with this." (laughs) >> That was as good as it got. >> That was as good as it got, I was like, "Score, nothing wrong that he can see!" So anyway. >> But so if you talk about productivity, reliability, you made huge gains there, and the speed of product cycles, were the three knobs that Toyota was turning much more significantly than anybody else and then fuel efficiency came. >> Right, so if you start looking at Toyota and I think this is where people first got the attraction and then sort of the dismissive of, we don't make cars, so the initial hook was the affordable reliability, they could deliver a much higher-quality car, much more affordable based on their productivity. And so that's what triggered attention which then manifest itself as this lean manufacturing and its production control tools. What then sort of started to fall off people's radar is that Toyota not only stayed ahead on those dimensions but they added to the dimensionality of the game, so they started introducing new product faster than anybody else and then they introduced new brand more successfully so all the Japanese, Nissan, Honda, Toyota, all came out with a luxury version, but no one came out with Lexus other than Toyota. The Affinity and the Acura, I mean, it's nice cars, but it didn't become this dominant brand like the Lexus. And then in trying to hit the youth market, everyone tried to come up with, like Honda had the Element but nothing like the Scion, so then Toyota's, and that's much further upstream, a much more big an undertaking than just productivity in a factory. And then when it came time to this issue around fuel efficiency, that's a big technology play of trying to figure out how you get these hybridized technologies with a very very complex software engineering overlay to coordinate power flow in this thing and that, and everyone has their version of hybrid, but no one has it through six generations, 21 platforms, and millions of copies sold. So it didn't matter where you were, Toyota figured out how to compete on this value to market with speed and ease which no one else in their industry was replicating. >> You're talking about, this has nothing to do with operational efficiency, when you talk about the Scion for example, you're talking about tapping into a customer, into an emotional connection with your customer and being able to actually anticipate what they will want before they even know, how do you operationalize that? >> So I think, again, Toyota made such an impression on people with operational efficiency that a lot of their genius went unrecognized, so what I was trying to elaborate on this morning is that Toyota's operational efficiency is not the consequence of just more clever design of operations, like you have an algorithm which I lack and so you get to a better answer than I do, it was this very intense almost empathetic approach to improving existing operations, so you're working on something and it's difficult so we're perceptive of that difficulty and try to understand the source of that difficulty and resolve it, and just do that relentlessly about everything all the time, and it's that empathy to understand your difficulty which then becomes the trigger for making things better, so as far as the Scion comes in, what you see is the same notion of empathic design apply to the needs of the youth market. And the youth market unlike the folks who are, let's say at the time, middle-aged, was less about reliable affordability, but these were people who were coming of age during the Bannatyne era where, very fast mass customization or the iPod era, which was common Chassis but very fast, inexpensive personalization and the folks at Toyota said, "You know what, "the youth market, we don't really understand that, "we've been really successful for this older mid-market, "so let's try to understand the problems that the youth "are trying to solve with their acquisitions," and it turned out personalization. And so if you look at the Scion, it wasn't necessarily a technically or technologically sophisticated quote-unquote sexy product, what it did was it leant itself towards very diverse personalization, which was the problem that the youth market was trying to solve. And you actually see, if I can go on this notion of empathic design, so you see this with the Lexus, so I think the conventional wisdom about luxury cars was Uber technology and bling it, throw chrome and leather and wood and when Toyota tried that initially, they took what was I guess now the Avalon, full-sized car, and they blinged it up and it was contradictory 'cause if you're looking for a luxury car, you don't go to a Toyota dealer, and if you go to a Toyota dealer and you see something with chrome and leather and wood veneer, you're like, you have dissonance. So they tried to understand what luxury meant from the American consumer perspective and again, it wasn't, you always wish you'd get this job, but they sent an engineering team to live in Beverly Hills for some months. (laughs) It's like, ooh, twist my arm on that one, right? But what they found was that luxury wasn't just the physical product, it was the respectful service around it, like when you came back to your hotel room, you walked in, people remembered your name or remembered that, oh we noticed that you used a lot of bath towels so we made sure there were extra in your room, that sort of thing, and if you look at the Lexus, and people were dismissive of the Lexus, saying, "It looks like slightly fancier Toyota, "but what's the big deal, it's not a Beamer or Mercedes." But that wasn't the point, it was the experience you got when you went for sales and service, which was, you got treated so nice, and again, not like hoity toity but you got treated respectfully, so anyway, it all comes back to this empathic design around what problem is the customer or someone inside a plan trying to solve. >> So Toyota and Volkswagen trying to vie for top market share but Toyota, as you say, has got this brand and this empathy that Volkswagen doesn't. You must get a lot of questions about Tesla. Thoughts on Tesla. >> Yeah, cool product, cool technology and time will tell if they're actually solving a real problem. And I don't mean to be dismissive, it's just not an area where I've spent a lot of time. >> And we don't really know, I mean, it's amazing and a software-defined automobile and autonomous, very difficult to predict, we're very tight on time. >> All the cool people seem to drive them though. >> Yeah, that's true. Last question I have is, what the heck does this have to do with analytics at a conference like this? >> Right, so you start thinking about the Toyota model, really, it's not that you can sit down and design something right, it's that you design things which you know deep-rooted in your DNA is that what you've designed is wrong, and that in order to get it right and actually much righter than anything else in the marketplace, what you need to do is understand what's wrong about it and so the experience of the user will help inform what's wrong, the worker rounds they do, the inconveniences they experience, the coping, the compensation they do, and that you can not only use that to help inform what's wrong, but then help shape your understanding of how to get to right, and so where all this fits in is that when you start thinking about data, well first of all, these are gigantic systems, right, which it's probably well-informed to think in terms of these systems are being designed by flawed human beings so the systems themselves have flaws, so it's good to be attentive to the flaws that are designed in it so you can fix them and make them more usable by your intended clientele. But the other thing is that these systems can help you gain much greater precision, granularity, frequency of sampling and understanding of where things are misfiring sooner than later, smaller than larger, so you can adjust and adapt and be more agile in shaping the experience. >> Well Steve, great work, thanks very much for coming on The Cube and sharing and great to meet you. >> Yeah likewise, thanks for having me. >> You're welcome. hi everybody we're back after that break and we're here at the ServiceNow knowledge conference in Las Vegas with the aria hotel i'm here with my co-host and colleague Jeff Frick as you know we've been continue to unpack the ServiceNow messaging the marketing messaging and test the alignment with the customers Craig Wishart is here he's the CIO of service stream an Australian company and customer of service now Greg welcome to the cube thank you very much mortals yeah so we've been talking to a number of practitioners this morning about the show about sort of how they're using service now but before we get into that tell us more about service stream and tell us about your role there is a CI L show so service stream is a Australian listed business and we really have three unique business divisions so we have a telecommunications business which specializes in rolling out and managing fiber across the country nationally we have a mobile communications business which specializes in building mobile communications towers in fact this year we'll do around about fifteen hundred of those towers and upgrading to the new LTE standards and we have an energy and water business which in itself is quite diverse but everything from in-home services from solar installations on roofs and hot water service through to read or out 40 million meter reads a year initiator coming with over 400,000 smart meter replacements we have a field force of about 4,000 plus people which makes us one of the largest in the country for field force and of course you know service stream by nature graph through acquisition and one of the challenges that we found well when I first joined 12 months ago was it by default you end up with very different cultures very different platforms very bespoke architectures and that sort of led us down the path in many ways to looking for a platform that could start to consolidate business but start to give us some leverage through commonality of process and also some synergies through the way in which the businesses work together bespoke is a good description of the way that a lot of IT operations their own so you guys are seriously into infrastructure obviously well that's true you know in terms of what we do as a technology team we saw our our objectives is being very closely aligned with the business unit in terms of being able to build commonality and drive costs out you know one of the one of the key premises that we offer to our clients is that we manage your customers customer and we do it very well and we do it on the basis of delivering to the expectations of our clients and you know to do that you really need a platform that can get you from the back of house if you like from the data center right out to parts of Australia which is still going through connectivity issues with telecommunications so we have a very mobile workforce you know if people working from right up the north end to write down into the metros so you were at the the CIO decisions conference that was taking place here i guess the i call it conference but it's like a sub advantage yeah sort of a breakout if you will at this event before we get into sort of your implementation of service now talk a little bit about what was shared at that little side event what kind of themes were struck and you know what was on the minds of the cios that were in that yeah look that's a good question and it was it was firstly it was a terrific event to be a part of and around people who are like-minded in a sense of you know one thing you find when you start talking to people regardless of where you work you've faced the same challenges you know you're under increase in cost pressures to not only take cost out but to deliver value the other challenges you're facing too often are how do you compete very quickly you know the market is moving so quickly and your competitors are moving quickly that often what you're trying to do is not only keep pace but innovate at the same time so innovation was a key theme I think the other thing that came out is you know how do we start to leverage what each of us are doing and how do we start to learn more from one another and I found that quite refreshing because in most instances when you're ten these sorts of conferences people are very guarded and one thing I've really taken out of this one in particular is that people are very open and want to share so you know the three key themes i took out here is you know how to CIOs lead and how do you get business connectiveness second piece is around how do you drive innovation often when you're competing against taking cost out and I think the third thing that you know became quite obvious to is how can we start to work together to leverage the capabilities of this platform which seemed to be developing you know week by week so let's talk about some of those themes I want to start with good leadership yeah what has changed in the last 10 years as far as CIO leadership look that's you know that's something to that is being discussed quite openly in Australia to the role of the CIO and in many ways I think the title itself will change over time but you know I think if we go back 15 20 years you know cos typically evolved from being infrastructure applications people and they grew up with specific knowledge around how to build stuff and you know over the last five years I think what we've seen is a transition of you know the CIA role being very much the person in the business who has accountability for information systems and technologies but really they're there to provide coaching and leadership to our business units on how they can best leverage new technologies you know to increase their profitability drive revenue take costs out but also increasingly how do you manage your workforce it's a very diverse role and I think one of the challenges and I'm talking about this later today my presentation the CI roll roll by default can also lock you into a paradigm that restricts you from being innovative and you know one of the things I'm talking about today is that you know be careful in a sense if you define yourself as a cell role in fact you may define yourself as being out of the business I see the role of the CIO now really being another business executive at the table who really just has accountability for systems and process so that leads me to the next you know piece that you mentioned which is innovation I want to talk about the role of the CIO at innovation jeff's from from Silicon Valley where there's a lot of innovation going on and one of the one of the montreux Silicon Valley right right Jeff is if you're going to fail fail fast you know failure is oftentimes not something that's part of the cios DNA in fact oftentimes they're trying to avoid failure yeah so talk about that dissonance how in your view can the CIO both lead and drive innovation in a climate that is frequently thought of as you know de-risking themselves yeah what you know when we talk about the themes and what's what's obvious and I put into this context you know there's there's three things that have really come up over the last six months which continue to resonate no matter where you are and they are you know how do we solve for mobility how do we solve for you know what is effectively going to be big data and how effectively you know do we solve for what is going to become predominantly these cloud-based services so if I talk about de-risking you know I think I think one of the challenges here is where we run at either end at times we run from right at legislation end which is what can you do and of course in Australia we often face into the context of you know data sovereignty it's always a big issue in terms of when you speak to you know the legal team wears it hosted who's got the data how can we protect the data in the IP right through to I think the role that Sarah plays in terms of you know taking investments and turning them into things that you know make sense for the business I think the challenge around de-risking is often about relationships and you know I think there's a lot of things that you can read about it but at the end of the day the position you take as a chief information officer as a big you know business executive how do we take an investment strategy and how do we translate into something it's going to mean something for the business either in adding value to the share price or taking costs out of the business so that we can do more with the money that we save you know I think by many default you know we are constrained sometimes what legislation but I think often it's just the questions we ask that helps us solve for those problems now of course we the third area want to talk is the collaboration we do a lot of these events and a lot of them are you know at a big boom vendor shops like IBM or HP or EMC and by the very nature of this their heft they're running into partners and there you know the whole cooperation yeah what's the cios attitude on collaboration in terms of I mean though the peer-to-peer thing is very strong you guys culturally very strong with your peers but how do you collaborate with competitors as that hole co-op titian thing hit your your world and talked about it specifically in terms of collaboration within the service now can yeah I think I think we're very much on the start of our service now journey we've we've been going now really for about six months and like most we started with the night esm instance from what I've been able to see we're very well progressed on what we do and obviously we'll talk about that as well but you know we I don't think there's anything that we're doing that hasn't been done elsewhere and I think the challenge is how do you apply that in your own context we've been very open with a lot of our people in terms of you know even some of our competitors are watching what we do and of course we watch what they do at the end of the day I think the measures of success are very simple for our clients and that is deliver the services that we ask you to do deliver them very well the technologies that you use regardless well you know what that's up to you so Craig talk a little bit about mobile and you know you mentioned that you've got 4,000 field guys out there and Australia for those who don't know still doesn't have a road that goes all the way across right i mean there so there's some desolate areas is a bumpy one at one point is there a bumpy one if you have a if you have a range rover hope it's about anyway so talk about you know one the challenges of having this field force and then to how the current trends and mobility are impacting your ability to know that help them do their jobs perhaps a couple things on this one that you know and I'll start at the telecommunications in the public internet level you know we we do run into challenges around the breadth of and the size of our country and we do run into coverage issues but you know if you put that aside where that seems to be growing and some people may be familiar with what the federal government's doing around their national broadband network program which is in our 36 billion dollar program to provide connectiveness around the country that aside you know from our perspective we want to have people in the field we want them working and the way to do that is to provide them with infield devices a lot of our people for so long have been working off paper they literally print paper out they'll take it with them they'll fill it out in some cases they'll roll it over the bonnet of a four-wheel drive in Western Australia they'll mark it up with a texture I'll probably spill some toffee on it at the same time that will then be post packed back into the main office where will render that back into autocad and then we'll figure out six weeks later that actually we really don't understand what you've done and we'll send them back out again it's probably not the best way to do things so you know if I think about what we're doing there very shortly our people will take out a tablet they'll mark it up on the fly will be using surface now to drive the service autumn side of that and as mediately as they submit that will render that in autocad in have an infield collaboration which is just going to take out six weeks of a cycle time just at the front end and you know to reduce 0 error rate by at least eighty percent the second piece which i think is really interested in terms of how we're using the product within the next six months will have nearly 250 million dollars of revenue flowing through service now whilst it's being used for itsm we're standing it up as a business platform with 250 million million dollars in revenue I'd say within a month the target will be half a billion so our revenue base will be flowing through the platform now to give you an example of what we're doing there we will do in home services for one of the utilities companies in Australian will drive about 70 to 80 million dollars worth of revenue through it this year and we are putting all of our service orders in there we're running asset management through the platform serialization of stock integrated into Division Microsoft's and vision persol are set we then take that information and we push that out to a tablet for our Enfield people who accept or reject the job now one great example of where service now so given us power that we didn't have is if you think for every hundred jobs that we do our technicians have to fill out 2,000 pages of a 4 it's a compliance issue that we've had to face into we service now we're driving it from form-based they mark it up on the tablet they then asked the custom to sign it they physically draw the house and mark up where the panels will go on the roof and they submit it for every job we do we take 20 pages of a 4 out and we take out back a house after you had to read that it's a remarkable thing to be able to do I think this year will take out 40,000 pages of a for that need review wow that is amazing i'm having saying all week that to me service now is about scaling your business and it's about delivering business value i try no you just gave two examples for its enabling you to reach means the scale and this i really like this value discussion is that is the value discussion in your mind something that its service now isn't is enabling additional value or is it just enabling you to actually see the value flow or a combination you know one of the things that i really liked about service now when i first saw it meant it's resonated with me since we started the journey is the simplicity of the interface and you know i was just talking to one of one of the service providers downstairs about some reporting and analytics software and i said what do you want to use for as it actually I don't want to use it I want my business execs to use it right because I don't want to be sitting there writing reports i think you know i need to be able to empower my people and my colleagues at the table as well as my board to be able to construct reports with information that makes sense to the problems they're trying to solve for you know and i think when we look at servicenow in terms of the value it derives its the simplicity of the way in which the information could be presented back and you know the information is then providing a framework for taking decisions and more importantly I want a framework from which our clients can see the value that we're pushing out to them we were talking earlier this morning to Fred ludie after his keynote and the internet of things came up he indicated that is one of the interesting trends yes he's tracking and then he sort of tied it back into service now as part of the vision they basically he wants to touch virtually you know everybody out there and you know presumably potentially every device out there yeah you guys are in this sort of Internet of Things business of instrumenting you know the the infrastructure energy infrastructure can you talk about that a little bit and talk about the whole you know this big data theme what this all means to your company I think you know the big big diet is interesting because I don't think it's really been defined I think it's still it very much at a concept stage so people talk about it in terms of what do we know about what we know they talk very broadly about social networks and interactions and information you can extract but perhaps I can give you a really good example of where we're going to take the platform next that will play into the big data piece you know over the next six months we will stand up a self-management workforce interface for our people so if you can imagine this which doesn't exist today I think we're really going to be first in the southern hemisphere to stand this up people will be able to register with our business putting in place in fact their skills their capabilities the insurances they hold the compliance as they hold the type of work that they want to do so for example I only want to work on a thursday sat down sunday and by the way I only work on single story houses I don't do doubles by the way here's my contracting model and the subset of contractors that I have and this is the rate that I'll work for now today we have a very heavy process-driven hey char you know I've got to talk to everyone and then I'll employ you and that process just takes too long we'll get to self managing of not only the registration cycle but also how I self-managed my profile now once i get to there think our workforce reach will move from 4,000 to 20,000 or 30,000 people will register with our business to do work for us that we can then go out and capture so you'll be able to essentially funnel down those candidates right so you didn't add so then you talk about Big Data right and you say so now that I know who you are what else do I know about you in the public internet world and I can start to look at what people say about you on facebook so i can say ok you're a plumber terrific we need that sort of skill and capability what else do you know out there and how do you represent yourself out there because if i'm going to put you out there with one of our clients customers i need to know that you're going to represent us the way that i want you to be represented how about all this how about all the data that's going to come up with smart meters how do you envision using that that's the bets a great question when you're going to this year do somewhere around about 400,000 smart meter replacements and you know those sorts of jobs funny enough they take about twenty eight minutes each they're a very quick job the data that comes back off the smart meter obviously goes back into the utility providers but one thing that the utility providers in Australia doing very now is that they have what's called an in-home display device you put that device on your wall I don't know if you've got it in the US but you put it on your wall and you can look at it you know every minute and tells you how much energy you're consuming in your house and you can start to take decisions around the way in which you use your appliances but you know if you look at us we are very much the intermediary there to get that data to the house and back to the utility company and and for us of course service now will then form the backbone of the asset management cycle so we now know where that asset is we know when that s it needs to be treated and then we can proactively go back and help these people manage their devices both at a consumer and at the business end ya think you're a little bit of head up from New England we just finally get rid of our windmills yeah I know Austin you know the folks down at austin energy of doing some cool stuff like that yeah i think you know generally you're a little bit ahead of the companies now you're actually implementing those today is absolutely so we are doing the ship packing dispatch of the in-home devices today in australia and then we're also been doing the smart meter replacement for two or three years now we've got a large cycle to come so it appears that service now has great potential of the i likened to a tick it's not the best analogy sort of embedded into the organization yeah and then you know it's like a ticket of virus but but not really I mean you know it's funny because you talk about you know Salesforce and that's kind of how Salesforce happens right here by two licenses and then three seasons and five seats and then you got a million seats it seems like service now actually doesn't take that that sort of approach but nonetheless this whole not idea of a platform of the ability to develop other applications seems to be something that your organization could take advantage of our time where do you see that going I think from my perspective is and other things that we need to get right you know the first thing is we've got to be able to capture a workforce so you know really we need a workforce of people with skills and capabilities that we can leverage back into the market we want our clients to see the value in which we hole I think the second thing for us very much is that we have to be able to move information around very quickly and we need to capture the information in terms of the work that we perform push that information out get the information back and then pass that back to our clients and of course like any business we need to be run a very effective billing cycle so to give an example again how service now is helping us we've built in what's called an RCT I process which effectively is just a taxi invoicing so when I go out and do a job once I close that job in service now that kicks a process that starts the billing cycle so I will immediately know that I've just been paid for that job you know and we run some assumptions around the quality and the work that you've done so that part is also next steps for us in terms of just maturing it I think the third piece which is probably one of the challenges of I think we're all going to face in tosa 6 to 12 months is so we've got all this data now what do we do with it you know do we do we understand the information that we've got and you know one of the things that I really like about the platform that will start to work on more is how can you extract the data and such you know such a format if you like for our business leaders they can start to take decisions I really think that the growth of the platform is not going to come from my team I think I'm going to be surpassed by my business leaders and executives are going to ask me to do more and I think they're going to ask me to do more in the field and the space of mobility and they're going to ask me to do more and how can they start to interpret the data they've got to drive business performance yeah in the example you gave it so this is a great example of instrumenting your business and that seems to be where it's headed yeah taking out costs in efficiencies and dry new revenue
