Jeff Frick here with theCUBE. Coming to you today from our Palo Alto studios. It's COVID is still going on. So, there's still no shows, but the good news is we've got the technology we can reach out to the community, and bring them in from far, far away. So today joining us from Virginia across the country is Dave Scott. He is the director of Product Management for Veritas, Dave, great to see you. >> Thanks Jeff, great to be here. >> Absolutely. So let's jump into it. You guys have been about backup and recovery for years and years and years, but oh my goodness, how the landscape continues to evolve between, you know, public cloud and you know, all the things happening with Amazon and Google, and Microsoft. And then now, of course big push for Hybrid. And, you know, we're the workloads, and kind of application centric infrastructure. You guys still got a backup and secure all this things. I wonder if you can give us a little bit of your perspective on, you know, kind of the increasing complexity of the computing environment, has all these different kind of pieces of the puzzle, are kind of gaining traction at the same time. >> Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I'm on the compliance side of the company. So I'm more on looking after requirements around collection of content preparation for litigation, making sure you're adhering to compliance regulations in different parts of the world. And, I mean that's a constantly evolving space. One of the, so basically the products I look after are Enterprise Vaults, Enterprise Vault.cloud, and eDiscovery platform. And, as you say, I mean, one of the biggest challenges is that customers are starting to move, you know, customers are looking for flexibility in how they deploy our solutions. We've had a product in market with enterprise vault for about 20 years. And so, we have a lot of customers that have a lot of data on premise, and now they're starting, you know, they've got cloud mandates, they want to move that content to the cloud. So we have gotten very aggressive at building out our SaaS, archiving solution, Enterprise Vault.cloud. But we also provide other options. Like if you want to move enterprise vault from your data center on premise, to your tenant in Azure, Amazon, we fully support that. In fact, we're taking advantage of cloud services to make that a much more viable option for our customers. >> So let's get into the regulation and the compliance, 'cause that's a big piece of the motivation beyond just, you know, making sure that the business can recover, that the regulation and compliance thing is huge. You know, the GDPR, which has been around now for a couple of years, California protection act. And I think what I find interesting from your perspective is you have this kind of crazy sea of regulations that are different by country, by industry, by data type, and they're evolving all the time. So, that's got to be a relatively complex little grid you got to keep track of. >> Yeah, it makes the job interesting. But it also is a huge competitive advantage for us. We have a team that researches data privacy regulations around the world, and it's been a competitive advantage in that we can be incredibly nimble in creating a new policy. We had some opportunities come up in Turkey, there's a regulation there that mirrors GDPR called KVKK or KVKK I think they call it locally. And it's, a joke that it's kind of like GDPR, but with jail time for noncompliance. So there's a lot more motivation on the part of an IT department, to make sure they're meeting that requirement. But it has to do with dealing with, you know, data privacy again, and ensuring the safety of the continent. That's proliferating throughout the world. You mentioned California Consumer Privacy Act, many other States are starting to follow what the California Consumer Privacy Act. And I'm sure, it won't be long before we have a data privacy act in the US, that's nationwide instead of at the state level. In other industries that we serve, like the financial services industry. There's, you know, there's always been a lot of regulation around SEC and FINRA in the US, that's spreading to other countries now, you know, MiFID II in the European union has been huge. And that dictates you need to capture all voice conversations, all text conversations, instant messages, everything that goes on between a broker and the end customer, has to be captured, has to be supervised, and has to be maintained on warm storage. So that's a great segment for us as well. That's an area we play very well in. >> So it's interesting. 'Cause in preparing for this, I saw some of the recent announcements around the concept of data supervision. So I think a lot of people are familiar with backup and recovery, and continuity, but specifically data supervision. What does that really mean? How is that different than kind of traditional backup and recovery, and what are some of the really key features or attributes to make that a successful platform? >> Yeah, no, it is really outside of the realm of backup and recovery. Archiving is very different from backup and recovery. And then archiving is about preserving the communication, and being able to monitor that communication, for the purposes of meeting compliance regulations. So, in the case of our solution, Veritas advanced supervision, It sounds a bit big brotherish, if I'm being honest, but it is a requirement for the financial service community that you sample a subset of those communications looking for violations. So you're looking for insider trading, you're looking for money laundering. In some companies, at the HR departments, or even just trying to ensure that their employees are being compliant. And so you may sample a subset of content. But it's absolutely required within the financial services community. And we're starting to see a lot of other industries, you know, leveraging this technology just to ensure compliance with different regulations, or compliance with their own internal policies. Ensuring a safe work place, ensuring that there's not any sexual harassment, or that type of thing going on through office communications. So it is a way of just monitoring your employees communications. >> So it's while I remember when, when people used to talk about messaging, and kind of the generic sense, like I could never understand why, you know, it's an email, it's a text. I mean, little did I know that every single application is now installed on every single device that I have, has a messaging app, you know, has a direct messaging feature. So, I mean the complexity and, and I guess the, the variability in the communication methods, across all these applications and, you know, probably more than half of them, that most of us work on are SaaS as well, really adds a ton of complexity to the challenge that you were just talking about. >> Oh, absolutely. I mean, I'm old. You know, when I started, all of my communications were on a Microsoft mail server, all my files were in the file, you know, the server room down the hall. Now I've got about 20 different ways to communicate on my phone. And, the fragmentation of communication does make that job a lot more, more challenging. You know, now you need to take a voice conversation, convert it to text. With COVID and with, you know, the dawn of telemedicine, or at least the rapid growth, and telemessaging, telemedicine sorry. There is a whole new potential market for this kind of supervision tool. Now you can capture every doctor patient interaction that takes place over Zoom or over a Team's video, transcribe that content, and there's a wealth of value in that conversation. Not only can you tell if the doctor is responding to the patient, if the interaction is positive or negative, is the doctor helping to calm the patient down? Do they have good quality of interaction? That sort of thing. And so there's incredible value in capturing those communications, so you can learn from the... you know learn best practices, I guess. And then, feed that into a broader data lake, and correlate the interaction with patient outcomes, who are your great doctors? who are your, you know, that type of thing. So that's an area that we're very excited about going forward. >> Wow, that's pretty interesting. I never kind of thought that through, because I would have assumed that, you know, kind of most of the calls for this type of data were based on some type of a litigation. You know, it was some type of an ask or a request, that I was going to ask you, now how does that actually work within the context of this sea of data, that you have. Is it usually around a specific individual, who's got some issues and you're kind of looking at their ecosystem of communications, or is it more of a pattern, or is it potentially more of a keyword type of thing that's triggering, You know, kind of this forensics into this tremendous amount of data that's in all these enterprises. >> Yeah, it's a little bit of everything. Like, so first of all, we have the ability to capture a lot of different native content sources. But we also leverage partners to bring in other content sources. We can capture over 80 different content sources, all the, you know, instant messaging, social media, of course email, but even voice communications and video communications. And to answer your question as far as litigation, I mean, it really depends on the incident right? in the past, in the old days, any kind of litigation resulted in a fire drill where you're trying to find every scrap of evidence, every piece of information related to the case. By being a little bit proactive and capturing your email, and your communication streams into immutable storage in an archive, you're ready for that litigation event. And you've already indexed that content, you've already classified that content. So you can find the needle in the haystack. You can find the relevant content to prove your innocence, or at least to comply with the request for information. Now that has also led to solving similar issues for public sector. US federal, with the Freedom of Information Act. They're getting all kinds of requests for right now for COVID related communications. And that could be related to lawsuits. it could be related to just information around how stimulus funds are being spent. And they've got to respond to these requests very, very quickly. Our team came up with a COVID-19 classification policy, where we can actually weed out the communications related to COVID-19. To allow those federal agencies, and even state and local agencies, to quickly respond to those types of requests. So that's been an exciting area for us. And then there's still the SEC requirements to monitor broker dealers and conversations with end users, to ensure they're not doing anything, they shouldn't be doing like insider trading, >> Right. Which is so different, than kind of a post event, you know, kind of forensics investigation, and then collecting that data. So I'm curious, you know, how often are you having to update policies and update, you know, kind of the sniffers and the intelligence that goes behind the monitoring to trigger a flag, And then that just go into their own internal kind of compliance reg and set off a whole another chain of events? I would imagine. >> Yeah. I mean, there's a lot of things we can do with our classification policies. And like, in the case of the COVID policy, we just kind of crowd source that internally, and created a policy, in about a week, really. That we, you know, we shaped the basic policy and then kept refining it, refining it, testing it. And we were able to go from start to finish, and have it publicly available within about a week and a half. It was really a great effort. And we have that kind of ability to be very nimble, to react to different types of regulations as they become, you know, get out there. And then there's also a constant refining of even data privacy for every country that we support. You know, we have data privacy regulations for the entire European union and for most countries around the world, obviously the US, Canada, Australia, and so on. And, you can always make those policies better. So we've introduced feedback loops where our customers can give us feedback on what works and what isn't working, and we can tweak the policies as needed. But it is a great way to respond to whatever's going on in the world, to help our customer base, which, you know, is largely the financial verticals, the public sector verticals, but even healthcare is becoming more important for us. >> So Dave, I wonder if there's some other use cases that people aren't thinking about, where you guys have seen value in this type of analytics. >> Yeah, I mean, definitely the one thing that I think is just starting to emerge as the value that's inherent in communications. So I mentioned earlier the telemedicine idea, and, you know, can you learn from doctor-patient interactions if you're capturing them over telemedicine vehicles, you know again, Video Chat, Zoom, and that sort of thing. But similarly, if you've captured communications for a long time, as many of our customers have, what can you do with that data? And how can it feed into a broader data lake to give you new insights? So for example, if you want to gauge whether a major deal is about to close, you know, you can rely on your sales reps to populate the CRM and give you an indication it's 10% complete, it's 50% complete, whatever. But you're dependent on all the games that salespeople play. It would be far better to look at the pattern of a traditional deal Closing. You know, first you start out with one person at your company talking, to one person at the target customer that leads to meetings, that leads to calendar invites, that leads to emails being sent back and forth. You can look at the time of response, how quickly does the target customer respond to the sales rep? How often are they interacting? How many people are they interacting with? Is it spanning different GEOS? Is it spanning different groups within the company? Are there certain documents being sent back and forth, like, a quote for example. All of this can give you a higher confidence that that deal is going to close, or that deals failing. You don't really know. You can also look at historical data, and compare the current account manager to his predecessor. You know, does the current account manager interact with his customer as much as the former rep did? And is there a correlation in their effectiveness? You know, based on kind of their interactions, and their just basic skills. So I think that's an exciting field, and it shines a new light on the data that you have to collect, to comply with regulations, the data you have to collect for litigation and other reasons. Now there's other value there. >> Right. That's a fascinating story. So the reason that you guys would be involved in this, is because you're sitting on, you're sitting all that comms data, because you have to, for the regulation. I mean, what you're describing sounds like a perfect, you know, kind of sales force. Plug in. >> Absolutely. >> With a much richer dataset, versus as you said, relying on the sales person to input the sales force, information which would require them to remember their password, which gets reset every three weeks. So the chances of that are pretty slim. (laughs) >> Yeah. There's a fact, I think I've read a stat recently that about, you know, only 10% of information is actually captured in a CRM. You know, contact information and that sort of thing. But if you're looking at their emails, if you're looking at their phone calls and their texts, and that sort of thing, you get a rich set of data on contacts and people that you're interacting with at a target customer, and, you know, sales. More than any other job, I think sales has high turnover. And so you need that record of, you know, off the counter. One account rep leaves, you don't want to lose all their contacts and start over again. You want a smooth handover to the next person. >> Right. >> If you capture all that content from their communications into CRM, you're in great shape. >> Dave, I want to get your take on something that's happening now, because you're so dialed into policy, and policy and regulations, which are such a giant determinant of what people can and should and should not do, with data. When you take something like COVID and the conversations about people going back to work, and contact tracing. To me it's like, Wow! You know, it's kind of this privacy clash against HIPAA, and, you know, that's medical information. And yet it's like this particular disease has been deemed such that it kind of falls outside the traditional, you know, kind of HIPAA rules. They're not going to test me for any other ailments before I come in the door at work, but they, you know, eventually we're going to be scanning people. So, you know, the levels of complexity and dynamicism, if that's even a word, around something like that, that's even a one off, within a specific, you know, kind of medical data is got to be, you know, I guess, interesting and challenging, but from a policy perspective and an actual handling of that information, that's got to be a crazy challenge. >> Yeah. I mean, we do expect that COVID it's going to lead to all kinds of litigation and Freedom of Information Act request. And that's a big reason why we saw the importance very quickly, that we need a classification policy to highlight that content. So what we can do in this case is we can, first of all, identify where that content is stored. We have a product called data insight that can monitor your file system and quickly locate. If you've got a document that includes, you know, patient data or anything related to COVID-19, we can find that. And now as we bring in the communications, we can flag communications, as we archive them and say, this is related to COVID-19. Then when a litigation happens, you can look, you can do a quick search and you can filter on the COVID-19 tag. And the people you're concerned with, and the date range you're concerned with, you can easily pull in all of the communications, all of the file content, anything related to COVID-19. And this is huge for, again, for public sector, where there are subject to finance, you know, sorry, Freedom of Information Act request. But it's also going to affect every company, because like, it's going to be litigation around, when a company decided that they would work from home, and did they wait too long. You know, and did someone get sick because they weren't aggressive enough. There's going to be frivolous lawsuits, there's going to be more tangible lawsuits, and, there's going to be all kinds of activity around how stimulus funds were spent and that sort of thing. So, yeah. That's a great example of a case where you've got to find the content quickly and respond to requests very quickly. Classification go a long way there. >> Yeah. That's the lawyers have hardly gotten involved in this COVID thing yet. And, to your point, it's going to be both frivolous as well as justified. And did people come back too early? Did they take the right steps? It's going to be messy and sloppy, but it sounds like you're in a good position to help people get through it. So, you know, just kind of your final thoughts you've been in this business for a long time. The rate and pace of change is only increasing the complexity of veracity, stealing some good, old, big data words. Velocity of the data is only increasing, the sources are growing exponentially. You know, as you kind of sit back and reflect obviously, a lot of exciting stuff ahead, but what do you think about what gets you up in the morning beyond just continuing to race to keep up with the neverending see of changing regulatory environment? >> Yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I think we have a great portfolio that can really help us react to change, and to take advantage of some of these new trends. And that is exciting, like telemedicine, the changes that come with COVID-19, what we could do for telemedicine rating doctors gauging their performance. We could do the same sort of thing for tele-education. You know, like I have two kids that have had, you know, homeschooling for the last three months, and, probably are going to face that in the fall. And, there might be some needs to just rate how the teachers are doing, how well are the classes interacting, and what can we learn from best practices there. So I think that's interesting and interesting space as well. But what keeps me going is the fact that we've got market leading products in archiving, eDiscovery, and supervision. We're putting a lot of new energy into those solutions. They've been around a long time. We've been archiving since 1998 I think, and doing supervision and discovery for 20 years. And, it's strange, the market's still there, it's still expanding, it's still growing. And, it's kind of just keeping up to change and, trying to find better ways of surfacing the relevant human communications content that said that's kind of the key to the job, I think. >> Right. Well yeah, Finding that signal amongst the noise is going to get increasingly... >> Exactly. >> More difficult than has been kind of a recurring theme here over the last 12 weeks or 15 weeks, or however long it's been. As you know, this kind of light switch moment on digital transformation is no longer, when are we going to get to it, or we're going to do a POC or let's experiment a little bit, you know, here and there it's, you know, ready, set, go. Whether you're ready or not, whether that's a kindergarten teacher, that's never taught online, a high school teacher running a big business. So nothing but a great opportunity. (laughs) >> Absolutely. >> All right. >> Absolutely. I mean, it's a very, a changing world and lots of opportunity comes with that. >> All right. Well Dave, thank you for sharing your insight, obviously regulation compliance, and I like that, you know, data supervision is not just backup and recovery is much, much bigger opportunity, in a lot higher value activity. Hey, >>welcome to the cube at Lisa Martin in Colorado at convo go 19 I'm assuming a man and stew and I are pleased to welcome back to the cube and Alon my who hasn't visited us in awhile, but he's kind of a big deal is the CEO of Commonwealth's on Jay Mirchandani. Sanjay, welcome back. >>Thank you Lisa. Good to be a good too. >>So exciting. This is the fourth go. I love the name go and lots of stuff. So you have come onboard to combo in about about nine months ago and man, are you making some changes? You know the analysts said combo, you gotta, you gotta upgrade your sales force, you gotta expand your marketing, you've gotta shift gears and really expand your market share. And we've seen what Combolt is doing in all three of those areas along with some pretty big announcements in the last couple of days. Talk to us about this, this first nine months here. And really maybe even, I would start with the cultural change that you have brought to a company that's been run by the Bob hammer for 20 years >>right now. Firstly, I'm very fortunate to be here because the company is, it has incredible foundation. The bones of the company, if you would, are solid a great balance sheet, um, over 800 patents, no debt, cash on the books, profitable. It's just, you know, and great, great technology wrapped around some amazing people. So when I look at the, when I look at it and you go, this is this, this is an incredible asset. My role really when I came in when I transitioned with Bob and Al for a period of time was really about making sure we didn't break anything, making sure that we kept the momentum, understood the culture, took time to talk to customers, talk to partners, talk to our employees, shareholders and understand, um, what are the focus areas that we needed to go after. And the last nine months has been about, you know, a lot of learning on my part. >>But also a very receptive group of employees and partners saying, you know, we'll give you a chance. Let's get this done, let's see where it goes. So that's where the nine months had been around and it's been a, it's been fabulous. >> So that's actually one of the things I've heard from your team is you've come in loud and clear with the voice of the CIO. Having been a CIO yourself, that's something you want them to focus on. Everybody, we always talk about listening to the customers, but you know, the role of the CIO has changed an awful lot. You know, since you first became a CIO, clouds change everything in a Nicholas CARF said for a while, does it even matter? Right. Um, so you know, Ferguson side a little bit as to how you want to make sure you're delivering for what the CIO is need. >>Not necessarily what, you know, they were saying that they want. No, it's fair. And, and as much as the role of the CIO has evolved, I don't think it's changed fundamentally. They still, you know, the guardians of the data, the, you know, the compliance and everything else and of course more than anything else, the productivity and the competitive edge that businesses need, technology and business, regardless of which business you're in, are interested intrinsically tied. Your delivery of anything you do today is tied to technology. If you, if you want to be future proof. So if anything, the role of the CIO has only been elevated. I'm, I say this playfully, but I do say it. I said, if I wasn't running this great company that I am now, I'd love to be the CIO of a dysfunctional it organization at a large company because there's so much you can do. >>Many of the decisions that we would spend an inordinate amount of time on the infrastructure, the application, how do you bind it, what are the protocols? Which data center, how much, who runs it, which partner? I kind of dissipated if you're not going to the cloud in some form of fashion, come on, right? If you're not building cloud native applications, come on. If you're not using dev ops, come on. So you've got all this time back now where you're not hopefully having conversations that don't matter and you're really go and building new things. So I think it matters. That's great stuff. And absolutely we agree. We've talked many times on the cube. It definitely actually matters more than today. If anything. Not only did they need to be responsive to the business, but oftentimes it can be one of those drivers for innovation in change in the business. >>Um, I love something you said in your keynote, you said data is at the center of everything you do because right. Most CEO's, hopefully infrastructure is something they might have under their purview, but it's not what drives the business. It's the data, it's the application, it's their customers that matters. So to speak a little bit to the role of data has changed a lot. You know, you and I worked for that big storage company where we even didn't talk as much about storage back about data back in the day. Today it's the life blood of the company. It's everything like that. >> And you know that that is one of the reasons I'm at Convolt because for the past 30 years I've been in technology, I've done app side, I've done infrastructure side, I've done a mix of all of those. And the more I think of an dev ops, I've done that. >>The more I think about it. If I were, if I was sitting with a CEO today and having a conversation about what matters in technology, who's maybe a CEO is not a technologist, I would say data matters. I would say the asset of your company is the data. It's gone from something that you used to manage down, compress deduplicate and hope it went away and you wanted to minimize its footprint to something where you want to maximize its value. And those aren't just words. I mean that is what makes great companies, great companies today, the way they use data to their competitive advantage. So this is, this is exactly the mindset where the mindset, the Guppy do to convo because all we do, all we do is help our customers be data ready. As I was saying this morning, that's, I love that term because that kind of encapsulates it for me. So that's, that's where my head's at. >> Yeah. I mean, we've always said that the thing that defines a company that's gone through debt, that digital transformation is that data drives the business. >>It, it absolutely should, but we're, when you talk with customers that have, whether it's a big university, a research university, healthcare organization or whatever type of organization that has multiple departments, so much data that potentially has a tremendous amount of value that they actually aren't managing well or can't get visibility out of. When you say we want to help you be data ready, w what does that mean to them? >>It means a few things. You summed it up perfectly. That's the world, the customer, the chaos that customers could live in because fundamentally, Lisa, if I had over-simplified applications, we're intrinsically to date data that you use for tied intrinsically to the application to build. So if you had an SAP system, your data was very tightly tied to that. If an Oracle ERP system, it was very tight detail yet it'll supply chain system. You were tied to that. And once data side of getting released from the abstracted, from the system that was built on, you've got a little bit of chaos, then you had to figure out who had access, where, how, how are you replicating and how are you backing it up over the policies, your plan compliance. And then it became chaos. And what I say to customers being data ready, saying do you have a strategy and a capability, more importantly to protect, manage, control and use that information in the way you wish to for competitive advantage. >>Just protecting it is like a life insurance policy, controlling, managing and using it as where you get the value out of it. Right? And so as companies become more data driven, this is where we help them. So the whole concept of the show, what we're sort of bringing to market is the fact that we can help our customers be data ready. And some of the technologies we've talked about today lend themselves to exactly that. Alright. So Sanjay, one of the questions many of us had coming into the show is how exactly Hedvig your, your first acquisition was going to play out. You made a comment in your, your opening keynote this morning that we need to rethink primary and secondary storage. So some of us read the tea leaves and be like, well, you know, you're selling an SDS storage, your, you're in the primary storage market as we would've called it before. >>Yes, the lines are blurring. I don't think those there. So I want to give you the chance to let us know where we're going. Years primary and secondary storage as we classified them, we're looking grayer and grayer mean they'll always be primary storage because there's always a certain user use cases for, for high-performance scale up capabilities. But a lot of the stuff was getting murky. You know, is it really primary? Is is it lower end primary, is it secondary and it doesn't, it shouldn't really matter. And with that, would that segmentation game a set of other capabilities like Oh, you know, file block, object cloud, more, more segmentation, more silo and more fragmentation. And I'm a big believer that this is all about software. The magic is in the software. And if you, if you forget for a minute that it's software defined storage as we call it today, but a set of capability's, a universal plane that allows you to truly define how customers get that ubiquity between any infrastructure that they run. >>Okay. Which in turn gives them the abstraction from the data that they bill. Okay. We've just taken a lot of workload and pressure off the customer to figure all that stuff out, keep whole manage. So I wouldn't get, I wouldn't get wrapped up on the whole storage thing as much as I would on the SA on the universal data plane or the data brain as I called it, nicknamed it in the show, you know, earlier as the left and right side one size, the data management, the other sizes, you know, traditional storage management. Yeah. Maybe I was reading too much in this. There's two brains. I think you've, you turn them sideways. They look like clouds too. But uh, yeah. Yeah. Um, partners wonder if you could speak, you know, we're talking about obviously the channel hugely important, we're going to talk to a lot of your team, but from a technology standpoint, you've got a lot of those hardware providers as well as different software companies that are here in the expo hall. >>Does metallic and Hedvig in those, you know, how will that change the relationships? I mean there's one, I've never built a business in my life that wasn't partner centric and partnerships to me is where both sides feel like they won. They went together. And so I've been very clear with our team, our channel, our board, our ecosystem that we're not doing this alone. That's not my intent. And our goal is to work together. Now we have partners in across the spectrum, cloud partners, technology partners like NetApp, HPE, Cisco. We've got ecosystem partners, the up the, the startups that are building new capabilities that we want to be, they want to be part of our ecosystem and vice versa. Traditional channel. Okay. so we've got the whole run of those, of those partnerships and we've been very focused. But we've also being very clear that we're in this for the long haul with them. Hedvig is today sold through channel and will continue to and metallic is built to be only sold through the channel. >>And you guys also, I was looking at some of the strategic changes that you've implemented since you've been here. Leadership changes to the sales organization, but even on the marketing side go to market. You mentioned that the channel opportunities for Hedvig as well as metallic, but also you guys have a new partner programmed, really aimed at going after and cultivating those large global enterprises with your SIS. So in terms of of you know, partner first, it really seems like the strategic directions that you're moving in are really underscoring that. >>Absolutely. Everything we do, every single thing we do is, you know, the question, the reviews we do, the internal inspection we do with the business. The, the way I look at the, the, the go to market conversations as to uh, the, you know, the pipeline is always about which partners involved, who's the partner involved, you know, and on an exception where we don't have a partner involved. My um, my F it's a flag to me going why? Um, no, we're, I don't know if you're speaking with Ricardo today or at some point he'll, he'll, he'll let you know exactly what we're doing there and how we think about it. And then we've just hired Marissa Rowe, I don't know, you know, Mercer and so Mercer's just come on board as our sort of partner lead worldwide. Yup. >>We're going to be talking with him as well. >>It's a cultural shift folks and we're completely committed to it. 100% committed. >>So one of the things that, that Stu and I were chatting about earlier today that you guys talked about in the keynote is in terms of how quickly metallic was conceived, design built really fast. Does that come from kind of a nod to your days at puppet where you are used to much shorter cycles? And how did, how did internally, the Combolt folks kind of react and we're able to get that done so quick. >>They embraced it. And I'll tell you, I'm, people will tell you that I'm used to saying this, this, this thing. I say that competition and time are not our friends. So we have to, we have to get out there before somebody else does. And if you're coming out with something, it's gotta be better than anybody else has. And so we all agreed there was a need for world-class solution, but we also understood that we had to do a differently doing it the way we've always built something probably probably wasn't the best answer. We needed to go shake things up because it's a different audience, a different delivery capability. But the beauty of the whole thing was that we had core technology at vault that was truly multi-tenanted, truly secure, truly scalable, which we had. This was years of, of great IP, which we took and we built on top of. >>And so we ended up focusing on the user experience and the capabilities of a SAS solution, the modern SAS solution as opposed to putting a wrapper of SAS around substandard technology. So in full credit to the team, we do 90 day releases on our core technology today. Right. So yeah, I think, I think that refresh cycle is what customers expect of us. That you know the and, and then that's what we do today. Right. So something, I don't think it's, I'm not giving myself any credit for it. Yeah. And Sanjay actually we had a customer on earlier talking about that cadence release cycle and he said to Combolt's credit, they're hitting it and it makes my life more predictable when the channels yeah. You know, and so they know when to expect something. So we have a 90 day and Tom will talk to you about this when he, when he comes on, how we get our channel ready for it, how are we enabled them, our own support so we give, so we are completely buttoned up and taking advantage of that release cycle. >>All right. Great. Sunday, nine months, you've already made quite a few moves in the test board, making a lot of pieces there from what we hear, you know, this is just the beginning. Give us a little bit going forward though those people watching what does Sanjay's next nine to 12 months, you know, foretold and as much as you think it's a lot of moving parts that we've, we've changed, um, there we're all part of a, of a roadmap that and so that, and I've been very open and public about it. When I came in there was a lot we had to do and I wanted to be really focused about getting this company back to growth and really helping you realize the potential that it had with, with its heritage of great technology, great customer base, great ecosystem. So I laid out a very simple three point plan, simplify, innovate, execute and tell. >>People are tired of me talking about it and giving me proof points that I'm done. I'm going to keep talking about it. And so simplify is everything about how we use the product, the user experience with us and how you engage with us. OK. innovators innovate in everything we do, products, experiences, everything we have to, we have to challenge the status quo and say it's a smarter way of doing it. Metallic is a complete encapsulation of that, of that energy. Okay. And the last is execute. It's all about getting out there and getting it done. Doing what we say and saying what we do. Just get it out there, get it done. And um, and I think the team has been amazing. They've just rallied around it. And if I embraced it, this is what I think this is what they want. So the changes, sorry, just sorry, I didn't mean to cut you off but it, I'll sum it up by saying that, you know, the nine months have been very focused in the direction making. Now it's about really making sure we help the company and how customers realize its true potential because the technology is great. The people are great. We're a good company. People love our technology. They stay with us forever. Because it does what it's supposed to. We just think we have a lot more to offer. Now. >>I know we're only day one at the show. Things did kick off a little bit yesterday with partners. What's some of the feedback that you've heard from those customers? Either those that have been using vault for 10 years or those that are maybe newer to the bandwagon? >>Well, somebody asked me if I had 10 cups of coffee before I went on stage in the sporting, but I think it's a good proxy for what I feel on the show. I feel incredible energy. I think that the customers, the partners, our own people, it's just, there's a buzz and you've been to shows before and some of them are just, you know, some of them have that energy and some of them are flat. Well this one's just full of energy and uh, and it's, it feels like a lot of adrenaline here and this people are excited and um, you know, I'm excited to go walk the floor. >>Well, your competitors are taking notice. There was some interesting digital signage yesterday at the airport. I noticed that that wasn't okay. I didn't, I missed it. Invitation. Highest form of flattery. Sanjay, >>I got the notice that there's, there's a lot of investment that goes into this. Uh, this, this segment of the market. It's been really hot. Um, what, what's your take on all the startups in as well as the, the, the big companies that have been putting a lot of it that it's an important space, right? Um, it's, it's, it's in the top three to five depending on which study you look at data protections back because it's one thing to have data and nothing to know that it is the way you want it. It's also a testimony to the a, it's not an easy space to get into when you're telling your customer that you're protecting them. That's a big word. Okay. I believe that you earn your way there day on day release, on release. And we've done that. I mean the animals the same good things about as in half a years we had customers on stage, you know, and it, customers don't just come up on stage and they, they really believe it. We have a, we had a pretty decent turnout at the partner event yesterday. You know, I think we're, we're in a great space at a great time and we've got 20 years of, of great pedigree that I don't take for granted as much as people sort of go, Oh, you're an old company. I go, Oh, don't mistake pedigree for anything else. You know, we've got some incredible IP over 800 active. >>Yes. >>You were sharing some of those thoughts this morning. I was looking to see where I put them. How are you guys leveraging the data that you have under management to make combos technology even better and to help make some of those strategic, >>it's this deep learning. It gives as much, you know, we applying AI implicitly. I don't want it to be an AI washing my technology for my customers. It's in there. It just works for them and it's my job to make my product better so they get more value out of it as opposed to for them to bolt on something to make my product better. So I don't, I really don't care what other shit about it. What I care about is I'm building that right into, into the intelligence. We have all the data, we know we, our customers use it, how they back it up, what their expectations are, what the SLS are, what their protocols are. We know this stuff and you, you have to, you know, we've been around enough to know this stuff. So now we're taking all of that with technologies like deep learning and machine learning and making the product better. >>So Sunday, one of the toughest things to do out there is have people learn, learn about somebody again for the, for the second time, you know, you only get one chance to make a first impression. So maybe I'd love your insight. You've been on board for nine months, you know, everybody knows Combolt it has a strong pedigree as you said, has a lot of patents. There's the culture there, but anything you've learned in the last nine months that you didn't know from the outside, he was still a pretty good secret. And there's a lot of people that don't know us as long as even though we've been around in the enterprise and and have have achieved a ton, there's still a ton of customers that don't know us and you know in our chops to get it out there. And if you've looked at our digital presence, if you've looked at how we're engaging online, it's a different Convolt. In fact, one of my favorite hashtags that's a, that that's trending at the show is a hashtag new comm vault. Is that right? I like that one. >>As I say, I might have started it, I don't know. But it is, it's an opportunity, right as to said, you know, we all wish sometimes in certain situations we could make a first impression. Again, I think you have that opportunity is you're saying there's, you have I she was saying close to 80% of, I think I read the other day, 75 80% of Commonweal's revenue comes from the fortune 500 you have the big presence with Bleagh global enterprises. This sustainability initiative that you were doing with the U N that Chris talked about. So there's, there's a lot of momentum behind that as well to take and really kind of maybe even leverage the voice of those enterprises to share with the world the benefits that Convolt provides. Like you said, data protection is hot. Again, if you have the data and it's, and you don't have the insight and it's not protected and you can't recover it quickly, then what value >>or used, if you can't use that know, why does it have to be compartmentalized where you say, Oh, that is my archive. Why can't I, why can't I say that? Yes, it is my archive, but I can, I can leverage that data for other things in my business. Okay. And so our product orchestrate allows customers to discovery to do, sorry, activate, not orchestrate to do eDiscovery, to curate information to use it for R and D to have a policy on sensitive governance needs. There's so much we can do with that, with with the data that's just sitting there, that and from different sources that I believe that at some level, protecting and protecting, managing and controlling our almost table stakes. So I'm raising the stakes uses where the magic is. >>All right, raising the stakes. Well, Sanjay, thank you so much for joining Stu and me on the cube today. It's the sixth year of theCUBE coverage. Two sets wall-to-wall. Day two of day four, day one of our broadcast, two more days, wall-to-wall coverage. I'm John Furrier, your host. Our next two guests are from Druva. We've got Jaspreet Singh, CUBE alumni, founder and CEO, and Mike Palmer, chief product officer from Druva. You guys are in the middle of it, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thanks very much. >> Thanks for coming on. >> Thank you. >> Good to see you guys. I want to get into it because I just had another guest on earlier. We talked about the holy trinity of infrastructure has been compute, networking, and storage, right? Those things are not, those are evolving, now they're coming together and they're changing. You get a lot of compute here, you can do more storage there, you got networking. We're expecting to hear a lot of announcements about connectivity. But the new dynamics of the infrastructure really encapsulates why cloud's been so successful. Okay great, cloud's great, DevOps, microservices. Check check check. We all love that, we believe it. But the big thing that people, I won't say be blindsided by, but aren't talking as much about is just the impact of data. Okay, you guys were out early on it, you saw the architecture in the cloud. Are people finally getting it? The cloud and data are coming together architecturally, thinking-wise, impact to customer. You guys started attacking that problem early on. What's your vibe here at re:Invent about the role of data and cloudification? >> Sure, I think if you look back and understand why cloud happened in the first place, right? So if you look at Amazon itself or AWS, it's Amazon's retail API is applied to everything IP. Where you could, we could buy and consume services on a price point across the globe as APIs. And now if you fast-forward, the right decide the compute, network is all coming together, the new realm of self serverless computing, all these turns are pioneering more and more increased data creation. Either in the data center, at the edge, or in the cloud. And unless you do something more holistic, sort of manage it, to protect it, to manage it, it's getting harder and harder to put your arms around the data growth. And cloud is a great answer to the whole data management, or the whole creation and management of data, given that the traditional systems are not very, very defined in the way data is going. Data used to be in Oracle, and VMware, and Siebel Systems, and everything else, now it's more image sensor, media text, apps which have been created. The new realm of data is very hard to put arms around with traditional routes of putting in the box in the middle of data. That's why the cloud is key to it. >> On the product side, you guys have been attacking the data. Amazon's expecting to announce here, they've done some pre-announcements, the role of consistency. It's something that we've talked about on theCUBE in our studio and at events. You guys have been on this from day one. Cloud operations on-premises, and the cloud should look the same, has to be consistent. Andy Jassy is going to be banging that drum tomorrow in his keynote. You guys have been part of AWS for a long time, your relationship. Are they getting that messaging from you guys? (chuckles) I mean, Andy, they all be in the public cloud now that he's back on-premise. So he's listening to the customers. I mean, Andy's very straight up about it. He's like, hey, I'm a big guy. I can handle the criticism. Customers want it on-premise. I'd love her when it come to the cloud, but that's what they want. >> It certainly would be flattery that they took messaging from Druva. (John laughing) And I'm not sure that-- >> But you guys have been, cover the relationship with Amazon first. How long have you guys been working with Amazon? >> We work five years now. Very good relationship with Amazon. >> And the product side is impacted in their ecosystem. How are you guys doing relative to the architecture of Amazon? >> I think we're the only natively architected solution in the market today. And so, if you saw this morning, we were right there on the board with some of the companies that have been around for decades, primarily because if you think about the generations of data protection solutions where you started with tape on mainframe, and you moved to one of the four legacy providers in the client's server space, you had another one that really popped up with VMware. Druva really owns the cloud space. And that requires, as you mentioned, a different architecture, adoption of more of an object storage model, the ability to natively store data in a file system in the cloud. That's different than what anyone has built in the past, and I think that's what the relationship with AWS is built on. >> So you think that Jassy's going on his on-premise mess-ee-mah consistently validates what you guys do? >> Without a doubt. He's gotten a lot of customers moving to AWS over the years, and some of them have some real barriers. I think AWS is doing what they always have done well. Listen to their customers, create solutions for those customers, and in the case of Druva, for example, being able to be integrated in a Snowball Edge which is unique to Druva, serving those customers, moving data to the cloud but allowing 'em local restore? Give 'em-- >> Andy Jassy announces AWS on-premise which is what we're expecting to see tomorrow. It's maybe some sort of appliance or something along those lines. We'll see what it comes out as. That's essentially the Azure stack model done right. From their premier perspective. Amazon on Amazon, Amazon on-premise, you can run it in the cloud. This sounds like a tailwind for you guys. How will that impact your business? How is Druva going to be impacted? To me, it would seem like it's just, you don't miss a beat. Sounds like it's going to be a good thing. Your thoughts. >> I think as Mike mentioned when he joined the company as well, right? The beauty of, what I didn't even realize, is that every time Amazon improves the platform, Druva is almost automatically benefited, given they're so, they really build on them. So when Amazon announced Snowball Edge, we were a launch partner with them, and third-party apps should be provision on Snowball Edge. I have a different take on the on-premise word than what the world think of. I think ultimately cloud or no cloud, it's all about helping the customer. If my understanding is correct, what Amazon is trying to do is to create a better way for customers to adapt more to public cloud, which is going deep in data center. There's a difference between doing enough on the edge to make the way for the cloud versus trying to do the legacy of going on-premise. So as Amazon creates that corridor for the option, Druva's naturally a good fit for it and part of it. >> Yeah, certainly that being cloud native with AWS is going to give you guys a good lift. Kind of a lay up question there. Let's get into the customer latency question, 'cause this has come up, expect to hear this a lot as well. Latency matters, latency certainly is a key criteria. Why the on-premise strategy? I would say Snowball, they're kickin' the tires. They did the VMware RDS deal on-premise, then so, this was not like an awakening for Amazon, they were going down that road. A little bit more deeper. What is the impact to customers, in you guys' opinion, of the move from Amazon? What's your thoughts? How deep in the enterprise does it go? How will this impact cloud migration? Is it going to change lift-and-shift to be more of a container strategy where you containerize it, then shift it? Some will not shift? What's your thoughts on the impact of cloud on-premise? >> So, I think there's three kinds of clouds. One is where you're trying to build any new applications in cloud which is where mostly Amazon comes in. Second is you can build a pre-made SaaS application. And third is the lift-and-shift. They're trying to still keep it tied to the data center, and putting some local in the cloud. And the third category is where latency matters. And just like virtualization, the last critical app to be virtualized was Exchange and SQL, right? When Exchange got virtualized, the data center opened the door, right? >> Yeah. >> The last critical app left in the way for major clouded option is, seems like Oracle. So which is where our RDS on-premise announced, which is where latency becomes key if you have to adopt some of those financial applications being built in the cloud where hyper-critical latency or uptime is needed. So that's a last hinge for some of the large enterprises to see more clouded option. >> Mike, talk about the product innovations. So people that don't know Druva, they see a lot of hype out there in this market. A lot of advertising, a lot of funding, venture-backed funding, you guys are startup. Pretty competitive. Where are you guys winning? What are the key innovations in the product that you guys have? Take a minute to explain your key value for your customers. >> Well, the first thing I think we want our customers to remember is if you're moving your workloads into an Amazon environment, or you're adopting cloud, we're the only natively architected solution. So just like you would have bought, a competitor for example in the VMware space, you're going to buy Druva because of its advantages to scale with Amazon in terms of its compute, to be able to allow you to tier into the various storage options that they create almost on a quarterly basis for you. But beyond all the infrastructure basics, we are converging services that otherwise were separate silos on-premises. So if you are a customer of one of the legacy providers, and you needed eDiscovery, you bought an eDiscovery product. You needed archive? You bought an archive product. You got backup, you bought backup product. The beauty of having a file system in the cloud is you can buy all of those operations against a single object store. So the definition's changing, we're offering that advantage. >> And one more point to it is also the go-to-market strategy. You saw David McCann this morning talk about Marketplace and how it's going to reshape the selling motion for them. And he mentioned Druva as the key Marketplace partner. With also tooling, or retooling the go-to-market motion of how customers wants to best buy a SaaS service and not a hardware, software model, impacting the real agility and time to market for businesses. >> Are you guys in the Marketplace? >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. >> You guys are on to something really big here and I think it's not well understood, the industry yet. I want to just think out loud for a minute. You mentioned that I got to buy eDiscovery, siloed app. 'Cause that's the old way. I mean, cloud's kind of a horizontally scalable fabric. Some of the best solutions aren't pure plays. So you guys are I think the first company of its kind that kind of is not in a category. I mean, I see how you want to be in a category. Gartner has the Magic Quadrant, backup and recovery, okay. You got to be in some and you win that one, you get some good marks on that. But cloud is more, it helps, maybe it could be leading backup and recovery, but it's not a solution for that. Just delivers value that happens to be for backup and recovery, powered by software. >> That's right. >> So this is the cloud dynamic of having the kind of scale. This is a whole new paradigm of software development. Your reaction to that, do you agree? >> Tell-- >> I totally agree. And I think you hit on two very important points. You know, one is data is a platform in the cloud, now it's a surface that you can operate on. You can add services, you can integrate with ecosystem services. Not everything is going to come from Druva. But unlike competitors, when you are with Druva, we are going to enable you to work with those providers. I think the second one, and the one, personally having come from an ISV environment, is this. If I have a great idea today, 65% of my customers wouldn't be in production with my idea for 2 1/2 years. >> Yeah, the time. >> That model's gone. If Amazon announces a service today as Jaspreet mentions, we want our customers to be taking advantage of that with their data today. >> Talk about the impact of the ecosystem that you guys are seeing, just thoughts on the industry. Jaspreet, you seem to have been around them. You've seen the movie a few times. What's coming? Because if these net-new workloads, again, you're going to hear Andy Jassy talk about this on the keynote tomorrow, new net-new workloads. AI's being powered, ML is being powered by compute availability. So that changes that industry. Kind of a slow, stuck in the mud for 20 years AI. You see Lumi's been around for not new science. But with compute, new magic happens. This the dynamic. What's your thoughts on the ecosystem. Those old solutions are going to die. There's going to be winners and losers. Who are the winners and who are the loser? >> I think the time will say how people take on the challenges. We believe that three core changes coming to cloud. One is serverless computing. In a big way. To drive the cost down of computing dramatically. And also converge the whole networking storage compute in a single mine center. Second is machine learning, or what in Druva we call AI of Things. How machine learning will be like mobility of 10 years ago to impact almost every single piece of software to make it smarter. >> Machine learning first is going to be a new trend. >> Exactly. >> We just called it right now on theCube. ML first. (Mike chuckling) >> And then the third trend is going to be around the nature of enterprise to analyze content. The whole Spark, or Kafka, or, the entire availability of metadata on your fingertips to sort of mine information, the available data, data on the platform, is going to be a predominant thing in the future. So put them together, the possibilities are limitless. You have a data platform which you can mine more cost effectively to the serverless, and be a lot more effective through machine learning. >> I think you guys are a data platform without a doubt. You're not backup and recovery. It's just one of the things you happen to do. And you need a category to start with. I mean, this is a data platform. And you're seeing that all over the place. I just saw a presentation from the FBI, counter-terrorism, they just can't put the puzzles together fast enough on these investigations 'cause the databases are everywhere. So just latency, talk about time to value, just ridiculous. Bad guys are winning. IT is going through the same thing. >> I think software in general has moved away from proprietary and more toward open standards, and so you're going to look for solutions that enable an ecosystem, that don't lock you into a container for one purpose, and we're taking a hold of that trend. >> Alright, guys, real quick, we going to end this segment. What's going on with Druva? Quick plug. How many people? What's on the roadmap? Where's the new innovation, where's the disruption coming? >> You take that? >> Roadmap, 600 people and growing. And the company was just an exciting place to be. Jaspreet mentions one of the most important things. Customer's think about three things. How much does it cost me? It it reducing my risk, or making me more agile? And we're focused on all three. You'll see us, serverless architecture's going to continue to reduce costs. Adopting Amazon storage tiers is going to help our customers reduce costs. From the making them better point of view, you're going to see more eDiscovery, legal hold, performance is going to improve, integration with premises, we got a lot going on at Druva. >> Lambda is so much faster than spitting up an instance, that's for sure. >> That's right, that's right. >> Your thoughts, final word. >> I think data science and machine learning is a big core focus of Druva. I think we have over 100 petabyte in management today. About, as he said, about 600 employees and growing very, very rapidly. How we monetize this 100 petabyte with the cloud through us, with customers, know how our knowledge is a big focus area for us. And also the data born in the cloud. The focus has shifted to your point of newer clouds. How do we tackle the new world clouds? Born in the cloud, born outside the core center of data center, and tackling those. A big focus for us going into next year. >> Congratulations, guys. Jaspreet, I know as founder it's always hard to stand up a company. You guys are doing well, congratulations. You got the right architecture, you got the right product roadmap. Congratulations, I'm looking forward to hearing more. Cloudification, new workloads, scale. Brought to you by VMware and its ecosystem partners. >> Hey, welcome back everyone, this is the live CUBE coverage here in Las Vegas for VMworld 2018. Two sets, nine years of coverage, this is our ninth year. Lot of games changed, we've seen the movie play over and over again. Infrastructure's supposed to be dead, it never goes away. Storage is supposed to be dead, never goes away. Data protection, recovery, never going away. It's only getting better, the cloud is here. I'm John Furrier with Dave Vellante. Next guest, Peter McKay, Co-CEO and President of Veeam. Big party, tonight. Massive success story in the industry, year over year. They kind of kept it quiet, I don't know why, but then the past two years the numbers started to come out. >> Yeah. >> The chart is up and to the right, competition is going down, congratulations. >> Thank you. >> Where's the growth coming from, what's the success? >> You know, I mean, we've been on a trajectory, as you guys know, for many years. Because we're not public, because we're not looking to go public any time soon, we never published the numbers. But, when we realized: look we got a lot of success going, the momentum's going, we think people should know what's happening, especially our customers who invested. So, we've just continued to execute really well on a multi-segmented approach from the large enterprise, the medium-mid-market, and the SMV. All of those three segments are growing double digits. You know, different value prop, different message, different solution in each one. Kind of the way we package. But they're all going really well. Europe, Americas, and now APJ is growing faster than any other region. >> Well, it's interesting, you said this morning, was people have the perception you guys were SMB and you said, oh, we just went after the-- >> The virtual buyer. >> The VMware guys, the virtual buyer. I think you said about a third of your business is small, about a third is commercial, and about a third is what? >> A third is the breakdown of our revenue. It is true that we didn't focus on a partiular market. We focused on whoever bought Vsphere should buy Veeam. And so whoever sold it, whatever the channel partner sold it we wanted them to sell Veeam. Whoever bought it, we wanted them to buy Veeam. It wasn't that complex, it was fairly straightforward. Just execute on following wherever VMware went, we went. We became the number one backup vendor, virtual backup. Number one VMware backup, now we added Hyper-V, and now we're in a crop-o-lis with Nutanix, which is the latest. >> Is the type of buyer now changing as you sort of enter some of these new markets, go more deeper into the larger enterprises? >> Yeah, it's gotten a lot more complicated, today. You remember we bought this company N2WS, which is really interesting. It's native backup for AWS. >> Right. >> And that was fantastic. We started as an investment, we bought it, and this business just keeps doubling and doubling. And really what it taught us when we had an event that we would go to, all the people, our customers were going to the booth, and they didn't know who Veeam was. So we we're like, wait a minute, you have Veeam in your business, well we didn't know that. So they were totally different buyers. They were looking to back up for the cloud offering than traditional backup or even your virtual backup. And so it really expanded an opportunity that we never knew. Hey, this is a whole group of people we weren't talking to. So that has expanded, you've got that group. You know, your traditional backup buyers, your virtual. But now it's line of business, it's much more complicated than ever before. >> So you're sharing some numbers. You mind sharing how many customers you have, the kind of renewals and what the booking numbers look like? >> Yeah, we ended the year at 300, we passed 300,000 customers and we're up to what, 320 or so, now. We added about 133, on average over the last two years, 133 per day, 4,000 a month. >> Customers? >> Customers. >> New Customers. >> New customers. That has been our kind of trajectory. It all goes back to, we have a 73 Net Promoter score, we do a really good job making our customers successful, making it easy to buy, easy to deploy, easy to manage, and we constantly just stay ahead in the roadmap, in what we're doing, and you know, it's-- >> Nice business. >> It's not that complex. >> What's the booking, what's the booking? >> The last year we ended at 827 on our goal of 766, so we blew away our goal last year. This year we put a stretch goal, get to a billion, we're well on our way to do that. I think there's only 34 companies that have got there, got over a billion, but that's our goal. >> And as a Co-CEO, one of your jobs is to sort of identify opportunities for TAM expansion, you've done that. Now, you've up-leveled the messaging big-time. So that's been great, to see that progress. And then, talk about the TAM. People think, okay, back up, tiny little five, six, seven billion dollar market. But your TAM is much larger, talk about your market. >> So we call what we're doing intelligent data management, so data management, managing your data, protecting your data, but doing it in an intelligent way, right? Not, you know, reactive, more proactive, more from policy based to behavior based. So that message is really resonating in the market. And so, I think there's a lot of, when we looked at the space, backup and recovery is really just one piece of it. There's email backup, right? Office 365, SAS applications, more and more eDiscovery, there's endpoint backup. So when we look at that and then back up in the cloud from a cloud infrastructure, when you add up all of that addressable market, it's about a 39, just, the high $30s billion market opportunity growing at almost 10%. So, some of that we'll do organically, we'll build ourselves, some of which we'll buy like N2WS, and some of it we'll just partner where it makes sense to do that, but that's the market we're going after intelligent data management. >> How are you using machine intelligence and leveraging that to go after intelligent data management? >> Well, you think of, we call it five stages of intelligent data management, so there's a journey that people go from backup to aggregation of all the data, to visibility, orchestration, and automation. When you get to orchestration and automation, it's around doing things smarter and getting more insight from what you've been doing in the past, like learning how you've been able to managing your backup to the cloud, from the cloud, between clouds, but now when you start adding things like security, like hey, there's a ransomware that you found, find a clean backup or restore to a better version of your data to the environment. Or a weather pattern, something's happened and back up to a different location versus. So you can start feeding in external, different third party data into our machine that allows us to be able to protect and manage your data far better. So, that's a huge opportunity. >> I mean, this is a very competitive space, you've been as a company, so successful, while others are declining or flattening out. Why, what specifically is the driver? Is it simplicity, was it just the product itself? I mean, it's hard to break into this market and kind of have the numbers you guys have. >> Yeah, I've been amazed early on. I mean, it is, the product is that good. We used to have a tagline that it just works, and that came from our customers. Veeam: it just works, and it does. I mean, I would say first and foremost, the technology is that good. I love to say it was sales, the execution, and everything else, but you know it is the product. >> Easy to sell a product that's just good. >> It makes it so much easier when the product is that good. >> So, that, I think the way we approach the ecosystem, it's a channel model, it's a very leveraged model, we added alliances into the mix, so we have, we just announced our Cisco Hyperflex. So Hyperflex, we're the first and only solution, intelligent data management solution, that is bundled with Cisco Hyperflex, that we announced, today. But, Cisco can now resell as one skew, HP can now sell as one bundled skew, NetApp can sell as one bundled skew, and we've got others that are coming. We've been hardware and software, hardware agnostic, cloud agnostic. And when other companies like Commvault and Veritas and Dell all have an appliance solution, Cohesity, Ruberik, and others, it's really driven the rest of the ecosystem to the company that has been Switzerland of all of it, because a lot of these companies have hardware that they already have. So we leverage, hey, we'll work with what you have, and you know we're going to work with what you're going to have, because we're not locking you into any hardware. >> That's what you always down. And it's been, so good product, easy-- >> Common sense approach. >> Common sense, and then focus. We haven't tried to do more than what we're, I mean, we want to be best in the world, started with virtual, cloud was the next, physical we added physical component that we were missing in. So virtual, physical, and cloud. Single pane of glass, orchestration, automation. It's not that hard. >> On the product side, as you got a couple minutes left. I want to get your thoughts on the growth strategy. Obviously, machine learning, if you're doing intelligent data, you've got to be using ML and AI, it's going to be core to the product. How is that looking, what's the story there? >> You know it's almost vertical dependent, right? Because what we're finding is in certain verticals, the ecosystem is different, and how we learn from, a lot of the channel partners are driving us in this direction, alliance partners are driving us to this direction, and moving from this kind of reactive mode to proactive mode. And so that's kind of opening up a broader ecosystem for us on how do we leverage more of the knowledge that's outside of our world and into making what we do in the managing of data, because, you know, the accumulation of data, as you guys know, it's doubling every two years, right? It's everywhere, data is all at endpoints and edge devices, it's coming from all over the place, and it's far more critical. And so, we're kind of in the middle of all that. And so now, how do we better manage that data for you, and adding more machine learning into that is critical. >> Well, thanks for taking the time to stop by theCUBE, congratulations on your success, just works, your product excellence, it's pretty nice to have that.
