Precision cancer medicine really is evolving where the personalization of the data are really going to be important to personalize those treatments based upon unique characteristics of the tumors. This is something that's been a really hot topic, talking point and focus area in the industry. And technology is here to help with two great guests who are using technology. Docker Docker containers a variety of other things to help the process go further along. And we got here spring and who's the bioinformatics research assistant and Camille took Who's a student and in turn, you guys done some compelling work. Thanks for joining this docker con virtualized. Thanks for coming on. >>Thanks for having me. >>So first tell us about yourself and what you guys doing at the Children's Cancer Institute? That's where you're located. What's going on there? Tell us what you guys are doing there? >>Sure, So I built into Cancer Institute. As it sounds, we do a lot of research when it comes to specifically the Children's cancer, though Children a unique in the sense that a lot of the typical treatment we use for adult may or may not work or will have adverse side effects. So what we do is we do all kinds of research. But what lab and I love, which we call a dry love What we do research in silica, using computers at the develop pipelines in order to improve outcomes for Children. >>And what are some of the things you get some to deal with us on the tech side, but also there's the workflow of the patients survival rates, capacity, those constraints that you guys are dealing with. And what are some of the some of the things going on there that you have to deal with and you're trying to improve the outcomes? What specific outcomes were you trying to work through? >>Well, at the moment off of the past decade and all the work you've done in the past decade, we've made a substantial impact on the supply of ability off several high risk cancers in Pediatrics on and we've Got a certain Program, which spent I'll talk about in more depth called the Zero Childhood Cancer Program and essentially that aims to reduce childhood cancer in Children uh, zero. So that, in other words, with the previous five ability 100% on hopefully, no lives will be lost. But that's >>and what do you guys doing specifically? What's your your job? What's your focus? >>Yes, so part of our lab Old computational biology. Uh, we run a processing pipeline, the whole genome and our next guest that, given the sequencing information for the kids, though, we sequence the healthy cells and we sequence there. Two missiles. We analyze them together, and what we do is we find mutations that are causing the cancel that help us determine what treatment. So what? Clinical trials might be most effective for the kids and so specifically Allah books on that pipeline where we run a whole bunch of bioinformatics tools, that area buying thematic basically biology, informatics, and we use the data generated sequel thing in order to extract those mutations that will be the cancer driving mutations that hopefully we can target in order to treat the kids. >>You know, you hear about an attack and you hear Facebook personalization recommendation engines. What the click on you guys are really doing Really? Mawr personalization around treatment recommendations. These kinds of things come into it. Can you share a little bit about what goes on there and and tell us what's happening? >>Well, as you mentioned when you first, some brought us into this, which we're looking at, the the profile of the team itself and that allows us to specialize the medication on the young treatment for that patient on. Essentially, that lets us improve the efficiency and the effectiveness off the treatment, which in turn has an impact on this probability off. >>What are some of the technical things? How did you guys get involved with Docker with Docker fit into all this? >>Yeah, I'm sure Camille will have plenty to bring up on this as well. But, um, yes, it's been quite a project to the the pipeline that we have. Um, we have built on a specific platforms and is looking great. But as with most tools in a lot of things that you develop when your engineers eyes pretty easy for them to become platform specific. And then that kind of stuck there. And you have to re engineer the whole thing kind of of a black hole. That's such a pain to there. So, um, the project that Mikhail in my field working on was actually taking it to the individual's pools we used in the pipeline and Docker rising them individually containing them with the dependencies they need so that we could hook them up anyway. We want So we can configure the pipeline, not just customized based off of the data like we're on the same pipeline and every it even being able to change the pipeline of different things to different kids. Be able to do that easily, um, to be able to run it on different platforms. You know, the fact that we have the choice not only means that we could save money, but if there's a cloud instance that will run an app costal. If there's a platform that you know wanted to collaborate with us and they say, Oh, we have this wholesome data we'd love for you to analyze. It's over hell, like a lot of you know, >>use my tool. It's really great. >>Yeah. And so having portability is a big thing as well. And so I'm sure people can go on about, uh, some of the pain point you having to do authorize all of the different, But, you know, even though they Austin challenges associated with doing it, I think the payoff is massive. >>Dig into this because this is one of the things where you've got a problem statement. You got a real world example. Cancer patients, life or death gets a serious things going on here. You're a tech. You get in here. What's going on? You're like, Okay, this is going to be easy. Just wrangle the data. I throw some compute at it. It's over, right? You know what? How did you take us through the life? They're, you know, living >>right. So a supreme I mentioned before, first and foremost well, in the scale of several 100 terabytes worth of data for every single patient. So obviously we can start to understand just how beneficial it is to move the pipeline to the data, rather the other way around. Um, so much time would be saved. The money costs as well, in terms of actually Docker rising the but the programs that analyze the data, it was quite difficult. And I think Sabrina would agree mate would agree with me on this point. The primary issue was that almost all of the apps we encountered within the pipeline we're very, very heavily dependent on very specific versions off some dependencies, but that they were just build upon so many other different APS on and they were very heavily fined tuned. So docker rising. It was quite difficult because we have to preserve every single version of every single dependency in one instance just to ensure that that was working. And these apps get updated quite Simpson my regularly. So we have to ensure that our doctors would survive. >>So what does it really take? The doc arise your pipeline. >>I mean, it was a whole project. Well, um, myself, Camille, we had a whole bunch of, um, automatic guns doing us over the summer, which was fantastic as well. And we basically have a whole team of lost words like, Okay, here's another automatic pull in the pipeline. You get enterprise, you get to go for a special you get enterprise, they each who individually and then you've been days awake on it, depending on the app. Easier than others. Um, but particularly when it comes to things a lot by a dramatic pools, some of them are very memory hungry. Some of them are very finicky. Some of the, um ah, little stable than others. And so you could spend one day characterizing a tool. And it's done, you know, in a handful of Allah's old. Sometimes it could make a week, and he's just getting this one tool done. And the idea behind the whole team working on it was eventually use. Look through this process, and then you have, um, a docker file set up. Well, anyone to run it on any system. And we know we have an identical set up, which was not sure before, because I remember when I started and I was trying to get the pipeline running on my own machine. Ah, lot of things just didn't look like Oh, you don't have the very specific version of ah that this developer has. 00 that's not working because you don't have this specific girl file that actually has a bug fixes in it. Just for us like, Well, >>he had a lot of limitations before the doctor and doctor analyzing docker container izing it. It was tough. What was it like before and after? >>And we'll probably speak more people full. It was basically, uh, yeah, days or weeks trying to set up on in. Stole everything needed around the whole pipeline. Yeah, it took a long time. And even then, a lot of things, But how you got to set up this? You know, I think speculation of pipeline, all the units, these are the three of the different programs. Will you need this version of obligation? This new upgrade of the tools that work with that version of Oz The old, all kinds of issues that you run into when they schools depend on entirely different things and to install, like, four different versions of python. Three different versions of our or different versions of job on the one machine, you know, just to run it is a bit of >>what has. It's a hassle. Basically, it's a nightmare. And now, after you're >>probably familiar with that, >>Yeah. So what's it like after >>it's a zoo? It supports ridiculously efficient. Like it. It's It's incredible what Michael mentioned before, as soon as we did in stone. Those at the versions of the dependencies. Dhaka keeps them naturally, and we can specify the versions within a docker container. So we can. We can absolutely guarantee that that application will run successfully and effectively every single time. >>Share with me how complicated these pipelines are. Sounds like that's a key piece here for you guys. And you had all the hassles that you do. Your get Docker rised up and things work smoothly. Got that? But tell >>me about >>the pipelines. What's what's so complicated about them? >>Honestly, the biggest complication is all of the connection. It's not a simple as, um, run a from the sea, and then you don't That would be nice, but that know how these things work if you have a network of programs with the output of this, input for another, and you have to run this program before this little this one. But some of the output become input for multiple programs, and by the time you hook the whole thing up, it looks like a gigantic web of applications. The way all the connections, so it's a massive Well, it almost looks like a massive met when you look at it. But having each of the individual tools contained and working means that we can look them all up. And even though it looks complicated, it would be far more complicated if we had that entire pipeline. You know, in a single program like having to code, that whole thing in a single group would be an absolute nightmare. Where is being able to have each of the tools as individual doctors means we just have the link, the input on that book, which is the top. But once you've done that, it means that you know each of the individual pools will run. And if an individual fails, or whatever raised in memory or other issues run into, you can rerun that one individual school re hooks the output into whatever the next program is going without having one massive you know, program will file what it fails midway through, and there's nothing you can do. >>Yeah, you unpack. It really says, Basically, you get the goodness to the work up front, and a lot of goodness come out of it. So this lets comes to the future of health. What are the key takeaways that you guys have from this process? And how does it apply to things that might be helpful to you right around the corner? Or today, like deep learning as you get more tools out there with machine learning and deep learning? Um, we hope there's gonna be some cool things coming out. What do you guys see here? And the insights? >>Well, we have a section of how the computational biologist team that is looking into doing more predictive talks working out, um, basically the risk of people developing can't the risks of kids developing cancel. And that's something you can do when you have all of this data. But that requires a lot of analysis as well. And so one of the benefits of you know being able to have these very moveable pipelines and tools makes it easier to run them on. The cloud makes it easier to shale. You're processing with about researches to the hospitals, just making collaboration easier. Mainz that data sharing becomes a possibility or is before if you have three different organizations. But the daughter in three different places. Um, how do you share that with moving the daughter really feasible. Pascal, can you analyze it in a way that practical and so I don't want one of the benefits of Docker? Is all of these advanced tools coming out? You know, if there's some amazing predicted that comes out that uses some kind of regression little deep learning, whatever. If we wanted to add that being able to dock arise a complex school into a single docker ice makes it less complicated that highlighted the pipeline in the future, if that's something we'd like to do, >>Camille, any thoughts on your end on this? >>Actually, I was Sabrina in my mind for the last point. I was just thinking about scalability definitely is very. It's a huge point because the part about the girls as a technology does any kind of technology that we've got to inspect into the pipeline. As of now, it be significantly easier with the use of Docker. You could just docker rise that technology and then implant that straight into the pipeline. Minimal stress. >>So productivity agility doesn't come home for you guys. Is that resonate? >>Yeah, definitely. >>And you got the collaboration. So there's business benefits, the outcomes. Are there any proof points you could share on some results that you guys are seeing some fruit from the tree, if you will, from all this Goodness. >>Well, one of the things we've been working on is actually a collaboration with those Bio Commons and Katica. They built a platform, specifically the development pipelines. We wanted to go out, and they have support for Docker containers built into the platform, which makes it very easy to push a lot of containers of the platform, look them up and be able to collaborate with them not only to try a new platform without that, but also help them look like a platform to be able to shoot action access data that's been uploaded there as well. But a lot of people we wouldn't have been able to do that if we hadn't. Guys, they're up. It just wouldn't have. Actually, it wouldn't be possible. And now that we have, we've been able to collaborate with them in terms of improving the platform. But also to be able to share and run our pipelines on other data will just pretty good, >>awesome. Well, It's great to have you on the Cube here on Docker Con 2020 from down under. Great Internet connections get great Internet down. They're keeping us remote were sheltering in place here. Stay safe and you guys final question. Could you eat? Share in your own words from a developer? From a tech standpoint, as you're in this core role, super important role, the outcomes are significant and have real impact. What has the technology? What is docker ization done for you guys and for your work environment and for the business share in your own words what it means. A lot of other developers are watching What's your opinion? >>But yeah, I mean, the really practical point is we've massively increased capacity of the pipeline. One thing that been quite fantastic years. We've got a lot of increased. The Port zero child who can program, which means going into the schedule will actually be able to open a program. Every child in Australia that, uh, has cancel will be ableto add them to the program. Where is currently we're only able to enroll kids who are low survivability, right? So about 30% the lowest 30% of the viability we're able to roll over program currently, but having a pipeline where we can just double the memory like that double the amount of battle. Uh, and the fact that we can change the instance is really to just double the capacity trip. The capacity means that now that we have the support to be able to enroll potentially every kid, Mr Leo, um, once we've upgraded the whole pipeline, it means will actually be a code with the amount of Children being enrolled, whereas on the existing pipeline, we're currently that capacity. So doing the upgrade in a really practical way means that we're actually going to be a triple the number of kids in Australia. We can add onto the program which wouldn't have been possible otherwise >>unleashing the limitations and making it totally scalable. Your thoughts as developers watching you're in there, Your hand in your hands, dirty. You built it. It's showing some traction. What's what's your what's your take? What's your view? >>Well, I mean first and foremost locks events. It just feels fantastic knowing that what we're doing is as a substantial and quantify who impact on the on a subset of the population and we're literally saving lives. Analyze with the work that we're doing in terms off developing with With that technology, such a breeze especially compared Teoh I've had minimal contact with what it was like without docker and from the horror stories I've heard, it's It's It's a godsend. It's It's it's really improved The quality of developing. >>Well, you guys have a great mission. And congratulations on the success. Really impact right there. You guys are doing great work and it must feel great. I'm happy for you and great to connect with you guys and continue, you know, using technology to get the outcomes, not just using technology. tech with experts we'll be diving into the changing economics of our industry and how to think about the next phase of your digital transformation now very importantly we're also going to talk about how to optimize workloads from edge to exascale with full security and automation all coming to you as a service and with me to kick things off is neil mcdonald who's the gm of compute at hpe neil always a pleasure great to have you on it's great to see you dave now of course when we spoke a year ago you know we had hoped by this time we'd be face to face but you know here we are again you know this pandemic it's obviously affected businesses and people in in so many ways that we could never have imagined but in the reality is in reality tech companies have literally saved the day let's start off how is hpe contributing to helping your customers navigate through things that are so rapidly shifting in the marketplace well dave it's nice to be speaking to you again and i look forward to being able to do this in person some point the pandemic has really accelerated the need for transformation in businesses of all sizes more than three-quarters of cios report that the crisis has forced them to accelerate their strategic agendas organizations that were already transforming or having to transform faster and organizations that weren't on that journey yet are having to rapidly develop and execute a plan to adapt to this new reality our customers are on this journey and they need a partner for not just the compute technology but also the expertise and economics that they need for that digital transformation and for us this is all about unmatched optimization for workloads from the edge to the enterprise to exascale with 360 degree security and the intelligent automation all available in that as a service experience well you know as you well know it's a challenge to manage through any transformation let alone having to set up remote workers overnight securing them resetting budget priorities what are some of the barriers that you see customers are working hard to overcome simply per the organizations that we talk with are challenged in three areas they need the financial capacity to actually execute a transformation they need the access to the resource and the expertise needed to successfully deliver on a transformation and they have to find the way to match their investments with the revenues for the new services that they're putting in place to service their customers in this environment you know we have a data partner called etr enterprise technology research and the spending data that we see from them is it's quite dramatic i mean last year we saw a contraction of roughly five percent of in terms of i.t spending budgets etc and this year we're seeing a pretty significant rebound maybe a six to seven percent growth range is the prediction the challenge we see is organizations have to they've got to iterate on that i call it the forced march to digital transformation and yet they also have to balance their investments for example at the corporate headquarters which have kind of been neglected is there any help in sight for the customers that are trying to reduce their spend and also take advantage of their investment capacity i think you're right many businesses are understandably reluctant to loosen the purse strings right now given all of the uncertainty and often a digital transformation is viewed as a massive upfront investment that will pay off in the long term and that can be a real challenge in an environment like this but it doesn't need to be we work through hpe financial services to help our customers create the investment capacity to accelerate the transformation often by leveraging assets they already have and helping them monetize them in order to free up the capacity to accelerate what's next for their infrastructure and for their business so can we drill into that i wonder if we could add some specifics i mean how do you ensure a successful outcome what are you really paying attention to as those sort of markers for success well when you think about the journey that an organization is going through it's tough to be able to run the business and transform at the same time and one of the constraints is having the people with enough bandwidth and enough expertise to be able to do both so we're addressing that in two ways for our customers one is by helping them confidently deploy new solutions which we have engineered leveraging decades of expertise and experience in engineering to deliver those workload optimized portfolios that take the risk and the complexity out of assembling some of these solutions and give them a pre-packaged validated supported solution intact that simplifies that work for them but in other cases we can enhance our customers bandwidth by bringing them hpe point next experts with all of the capabilities we have to help them plan deliver and support these i.t projects and transformations organizations can get on a faster track of modernization getting greater insight and control as they do it we're a trusted partner to get the most for a business that's on this journey in making these critical compute investments to underpin the transformations and whether that's planning to optimizing to safe retirement at the end of life we can bring that expertise to bayer to help amplify what our customers already have in-house and help them accelerate and succeed in executing these transformations thank you for that neil so let's talk about some of the other changes that customers are seeing and the cloud has obviously forced customers and their suppliers to really rethink how technology is packaged how it's consumed how it's priced i mean there's no doubt in that to take green lake it's obviously a leading example of a pay as pay-as-you-scale infrastructure model and it could be applied on-prem or hybrid can you maybe give us a sense as to where you are today with green lake well it's really exciting you know from our first pay-as-you-go offering back in 2006 15 years ago to the introduction of green lake hpe has really been paving the way on consumption-based services through innovation and partnership to help meet the exact needs of our customers hpe green lake provides an experience that's the best of both worlds a simple pay-per-use technology model with the risk management of data that's under our customers direct control and it lets customers shift to everything as a service in order to free up capital and avoid that upfront expense that we talked about they can do this anywhere at any scale or any size and really hpe green lake is the cloud that comes to you like that so we've touched a little bit on how customers can maybe overcome some of the barriers to transformation what about the nature of transformations themselves i mean historically there was a lot of lip service paid to digital and and there's a lot of complacency frankly but you know that covered wrecking ball meme that so well describes that if you're not a digital business essentially you're going to be out of business so neil as things have evolved how is hpe addressed the new requirements well the new requirements are really about what customers are trying to achieve and four very common themes that we see are enabling the productivity of a remote workforce that was never really part of the plan for many organizations being able to develop and deliver new apps and services in order to service customers in a different way or drive new revenue streams being able to get insights from data so that in these tough times they can optimize their business more thoroughly and then finally think about the efficiency of an agile hybrid private cloud infrastructure especially one that now has to integrate the edge and we're really thrilled to be helping our customers accelerate all of these and more with hpe compute i want to double click on that remote workforce productivity i mean again the surveys that we see 46 percent of the cios say that productivity improved with the whole work from home remote work trend and on average those improvements were in the four percent range which is absolutely enormous i mean when you think about that how does hpe specifically you know help here what do you guys do well every organization in the world has had to adapt to a different style of working and with more remote workers than they had before and for many organizations that's going to become the new normal even post pandemic many it shops are not well equipped for the infrastructure to provide that experience because if all your workers are remote the resiliency of that infrastructure the latencies of that infrastructure the reliability of are all incredibly important so we provide comprehensive solutions expertise and as a service options that support that remote work through virtual desktop infrastructure or vdi so that our customers can support that new normal of virtual engagements online everything across industries wherever they are and that's just one example of many of the workload optimized solutions that we're providing for our customers is about taking out the guesswork and the uncertainty in delivering on these changes that they have to deploy as part of their transformation and we can deliver that range of workload optimized solutions across all of these different use cases because of our broad range of innovation in compute platforms that span from the ruggedized edge to the data center all the way up to exascale and hpc i mean that's key if you're trying to affect the digital transformation and you don't have to fine-tune you know be basically build your own optimized solutions if i can buy that rather than having to build it and rely on your r d you know that's key what else is hpe doing you know to deliver things new apps new services you know your microservices containers the whole developer trend what's going on there well that's really key because organizations are all seeking to evolve their mix of business and bring new services and new capabilities new ways to reach their customers new way to reach their employees new ways to interact in their ecosystem all digitally and that means app development and many organizations of course are embracing container technology to do that today so with the hpe container platform our customers can realize that agility and efficiency that comes with containerization and use it to provide insights to their data more and more that data of course is being machine generated or generated at the edge or the near edge and it can be a real challenge to manage that data holistically and not have silos and islands an hpe esmerald data fabric speeds the agility and access to data with a unified platform that can span across the data centers multiple clouds and even the edge and that enables data analytics that can create insights powering a data-driven production-oriented cloud-enabled analytics and ai available anytime anywhere in any scale and it's really exciting to see the kind of impact that that can have in helping businesses optimize their operations in these challenging times you got to go where the data is and the data is distributed it's decentralized so i i i like the esmerel of vision and execution there so that all sounds good but with digital transformation you get you're going to see more compute in in hybrid's deployments you mentioned edge so the surface area it's like the universe it's it's ever-expanding you mentioned you know remote work and work from home before so i'm curious where are you investing your resources from a cyber security perspective what can we count on from hpe there well you can count on continued leadership from hpe as the world's most secure industry standard server portfolio we provide an enhanced and holistic 360 degree view to security that begins in the manufacturing supply chain and concludes with a safeguarded end-of-life decommissioning and of course we've long set the bar for security with our work on silicon root of trust and we're extending that to the application tier but in addition to the security customers that are building this modern hybrid are private cloud including the integration of the edge need other elements too they need an intelligent software-defined control plane so that they can automate their compute fleets from all the way at the edge to the core and while scale and automation enable efficiency all private cloud infrastructures are competing with web scale economics and that's why we're democratizing web scale technologies like pinsando to bring web scale economics and web scale architecture to the private cloud our partners are so important in helping us serve our customers needs yeah i mean hp has really upped its ecosystem game since the the middle of last decade when when you guys reorganized it you became like even more partner friendly so maybe give us a preview of what's coming next in that regard from today's event well dave we're really excited to have hp's ceo antonio neri speaking with pat gelsinger from intel and later lisa sue from amd and later i'll have the chance to catch up with john chambers the founder and ceo of jc2 ventures to discuss the state of the market today yeah i'm jealous you guys had some good interviews coming up neil thanks so much for joining us today on the virtual cube you've really shared a lot of great insight how hpe is partnering with customers it's it's always great to catch up with you hopefully we can do so face to face you know sooner rather than later well i look forward to that and uh you know no doubt our world has changed and we're here to help our customers and partners with the technology the expertise and the economics they need for these digital transformations and we're going to bring them unmatched workload optimization from the edge to exascale with that 360 degree security with the intelligent automation and we're going to deliver it all as an as a service experience we're really excited to be helping our customers accelerate what's next for their businesses and it's been really great talking with you today about that dave thanks for having me you're very welcome it's been super neal and i actually you know i had the opportunity to speak with some of your customers about their digital transformation and the role of that hpe plays there so let's dive right in we're here on the cube covering hpe accelerating next and with me is rule siestermans who is the head of it at the netherlands cancer institute also known as nki welcome rule thank you very much great to be here hey what can you tell us about the netherlands cancer institute maybe you could talk about your core principles and and also if you could weave in your specific areas of expertise yeah maybe first introduction to the netherlands institute um we are one of the top 10 comprehensive cancers in the world and what we do is we combine a hospital for treating patients with cancer and a recent institute under one roof so discoveries we do we find within the research we can easily bring them back to the clinic and vis-a-versa so we have about 750 researchers and about 3 000 other employees doctors nurses and and my role is to uh to facilitate them at their best with it got it so i mean everybody talks about digital digital transformation to us it all comes down to data so i'm curious how you collect and take advantage of medical data specifically to support nki's goals maybe some of the challenges that your organization faces with the amount of data the speed of data coming in just you know the the complexities of data how do you handle that yeah it's uh it's it's it's challenge and uh yeah what we we have we have a really a large amount of data so we produce uh terabytes a day and we we have stored now more than one petabyte on data at this moment and yeah it's uh the challenge is to to reuse the data optimal for research and to share it with other institutions so that needs to have a flexible infrastructure for that so a fast really fast network uh big data storage environment but the real challenge is not not so much the i.t bus is more the quality of the data so we have a lot of medical systems all producing those data and how do we combine them and and yeah get the data fair so findable accessible interoperable and reusable uh for research uh purposes so i think that's the main challenge the quality of the data yeah very common themes that we hear from from other customers i wonder if you could paint a picture of your environment and maybe you can share where hpe solutions fit in what what value they bring to your organization's mission yeah i think it brings a lot of flexibility so what we did with hpe is that we we developed a software-defined data center and then a virtual workplace for our researchers and doctors and that's based on the hpe infrastructure and what we wanted to build is something that expect the needs of doctors and nurses but also the researchers and the two kind of different blood groups blood groups and with different needs so uh but we wanted to create one infrastructure because we wanted to make the connection between the hospital and the research that's that's more important so um hpe helped helped us not only with the the infrastructure itself but also designing the whole architecture of it and for example what we did is we we bought a lot of hardware and and and the hardware is really uh doing his his job between nine till five uh dennis everything is working within everyone is working within the institution but all the other time in evening and and nights hours and also the redundant environment we have for the for our healthcare uh that doesn't do nothing of much more or less uh in in those uh dark hours so what we created together with nvidia and hpe and vmware is that we we call it video by day compute by night so we reuse those those servers and those gpu capacity for computational research jobs within the research that's you mentioned flexibility for this genius and and so we're talking you said you know a lot of hard ways they're probably proliant i think synergy aruba networking is in there how are you using this environment actually the question really is when you think about nki's digital transformation i mean is this sort of the fundamental platform that you're using is it a maybe you could describe that yeah it's it's the fundamental platform to to to work on and and and what we see is that we have we have now everything in place for it but the real challenge is is the next steps we are in so we have a a software defined data center we are cloud ready so the next steps is to to make the connection to the cloud to to give more automation to our researchers so they don't have to wait a couple of weeks for it to do it but they can do it themselves with a couple of clicks so i think the basic is we are really flexible and we have a lot of opportunities for automation for example but the next step is uh to create that business value uh really for for our uh employees that's a great story and a very important mission hawaii and i love the partnership with hpe and the way you're reinventing an industry well you've always excelled john at catching market transitions and there are so many transitions and paradigm shifts happening in the market and tech specifically right now as you see companies rush to accelerate their transformation what do you see as the keys to success well i i think you're seeing actually an acceleration following the covet challenges that all of us faced and i wasn't sure that would happen it's probably at three times the paces before there was a discussion point about how quickly the companies need to go digital uh that's no longer a discussion point almost all companies are moving with tremendous feed on digital and it's the ability as the cloud moves to the edge with compute and security uh at the edge and how you deliver these services to where the majority of applications uh reside are going to determine i think the future of the next generation company leadership and it's the area that neil we're working together on in many many ways so i think it's about innovation it's about the cloud moving to the edge and an architectural play with silicon to speed up that innovation yes we certainly see our customers of all sizes trying to accelerate what's next and get that digital transformation moving even faster as a result of the environment that we're all living in and we're finding that workload focus is really key uh customers in all kinds of different scales are having to adapt and support the remote workforces with vdi and as you say john they're having to deal with the deployment of workloads at the edge with so much data getting generated at the edge and being acted upon at the edge the analytics and the infrastructure to manage that as these processes get digitized and automated is is so important for so many workflows we really believe that the choice of infrastructure partner that underpins those transformations really matters a partner that can help create the financial capacity that can help optimize your environments and enable our customers to focus on supporting their business are all super key to success and you mentioned that in the last year there's been a lot of rapid course correction for all of us a demand for velocity and the ability to deploy resources at scale is more and more needed maybe more than ever what are you hearing customers looking for as they're rolling out their digital transformation efforts well i think they're being realistic that they're going to have to move a lot faster than before and they're also realistic on core versus context they're they're their core capability is not the technology of themselves it's how to deploy it and they're we're looking for partners that can help bring them there together but that can also innovate and very often the leaders who might have been a leader in a prior generation may not be on this next move hence the opportunity for hpe and startups like vinsano to work together as the cloud moves the edge and perhaps really balance or even challenge some of the big big incumbents in this category as well as partners uniquely with our joint customers on how do we achieve their business goals tell me a little bit more about how you move from this being a technology positioning for hpe to literally helping your customers achieve their outcomes they want and and how are you changing hpe in that way well i think when you consider these transformations the infrastructure that you choose to underpin it is incredibly critical our customers need a software-defined management plan that enables them to automate so much of their infrastructure they need to be able to take faster action where the data is and to do all of this in a cloud-like experience where they can deliver their infrastructure as code anywhere from exascale through the enterprise data center to the edge and really critically they have to be able to do this securely which becomes an ever increasing challenge and doing it at the right economics relative to their alternatives and part of the right economics of course includes adopting the best practices from web scale architectures and bringing them to the heart of the enterprise and in our partnership with pensando we're working to enable these new ideas of web scale architecture and fleet management for the enterprise at scale you know what is fun is hpe has an unusual talent from the very beginning in silicon valley of working together with others and creating a win-win innovation approach if you watch what your team has been able to do and i want to say this for everybody listening you work with startups better than any other company i've seen in terms of how you do win win together and pinsando is just the example of that uh this startup which by the way is the ninth time i have done with this team a new generation of products and we're designing that together with hpe in terms of as the cloud moves to the edge how do we get the leverage out of that and produce the results for your customers on this to give the audience appeal for it you're talking with pensano alone in terms of the efficiency versus an amazon amazon web services of an order of magnitude i'm not talking 100 greater i'm talking 10x greater and things from throughput number of connections you do the jitter capability etc and it talks how two companies uniquely who believe in innovation and trust each other and have very similar cultures can work uniquely together on it how do you bring that to life with an hpe how do you get your company to really say let's harvest the advantages of your ecosystem in your advantages of startups well as you say more and more companies are faced with these challenges of hitting the right economics for the infrastructure and we see many enterprises of various sizes trying to come to terms with infrastructures that look a lot more like a service provider that require that software-defined management plane and the automation to deploy at scale and with the work we're doing with pinsando the benefits that we bring in terms of the observability and the telemetry and the encryption and the distributed network functions but also a security architecture that enables that efficiency on the individual nodes is just so key to building a competitive architecture moving forwards for an on-prem private cloud or internal service provider operation and we're really excited about the work we've done to bring that technology across our portfolio and bring that to our customers so that they can achieve those kind of economics and capabilities and go focus on their own transformations rather than building and running the infrastructure themselves artisanally and having to deal with integrating all of that great technology themselves makes tremendous sense you know neil you and i work on a board together et cetera i've watched your summarization skills and i always like to ask the question after you do a quick summary like this what are the three or four takeaways we would like for the audience to get out of our conversation well that's a great question thanks john we believe that customers need a trusted partner to work through these digital transformations that are facing them and confront the challenge of the time that the covet crisis has taken away as you said up front every organization is having to transform and transform more quickly and more digitally and working with a trusted partner with the expertise that only comes from decades of experience is a key enabler for that a partner with the ability to create the financial capacity to transform the workload expertise to get more from the infrastructure and optimize the environment so that you can focus on your own business a partner that can deliver the systems and the security and the automation that makes it easily deployable and manageable anywhere you need them at any scale whether the edge the enterprise data center or all the way up to exascale in high performance computing and can do that all as a service as we can at hpe through hpe green lake enabling our customers most critical workloads it's critical that all of that is underpinned by an ai powered digitally enabled service experience so that our customers can get on with their transformation and running their business instead of dealing with their infrastructure and really only hpe can provide this combination of capabilities and we're excited and committed to helping our customers accelerate what's next for their businesses neil it's fun i i love being your partner and your wingman our values and cultures are so similar thanks for letting me be a part of this discussion today thanks for being with us john it was great having you here oh it's friends for life okay now we're going to dig into the world of video which accounts for most of the data that we store and requires a lot of intense processing capabilities to stream here with me is jim brickmeyer who's the chief marketing and product officer at vlasics jim good to see you good to see you as well so tell us a little bit more about velocity what's your role in this tv streaming world and maybe maybe talk about your ideal customer sure sure so um we're leading provider of carrier great video solutions video streaming solutions and advertising uh technology to service providers around the globe so we primarily sell software-based solutions to uh cable telco wireless providers and broadcasters that are interested in launching their own um video streaming services to consumers yeah so this is this big time you know we're not talking about mom and pop you know a little video outfit but but maybe you can help us understand that and just the sheer scale of of the tv streaming that you're doing maybe relate it to you know the overall internet usage how much traffic are we talking about here yeah sure so uh yeah so our our customers tend to be some of the largest um network service providers around the globe uh and if you look at the uh the video traffic um with respect to the total amount of traffic that that goes through the internet video traffic accounts for about 90 of the total amount of data that uh that traverses the internet so video is uh is a pretty big component of um of how people when they look at internet technologies they look at video streaming technologies uh you know this is where we we focus our energy is in carrying that traffic as efficiently as possible and trying to make sure that from a consumer standpoint we're all consumers of video and uh make sure that the consumer experience is a high quality experience that you don't experience any glitches and that that ultimately if people are paying for that content that they're getting the value that they pay for their for their money uh in their entertainment experience i think people sometimes take it for granted it's like it's like we we all forget about dial up right those days are long gone but the early days of video was so jittery and restarting and and the thing too is that you know when you think about the pandemic and the boom in streaming that that hit you know we all sort of experienced that but the service levels were pretty good i mean how much how much did the pandemic affect traffic what kind of increases did you see and how did that that impact your business yeah sure so uh you know obviously while it was uh tragic to have a pandemic and have people locked down what we found was that when people returned to their homes what they did was they turned on their their television they watched on on their mobile devices and we saw a substantial increase in the amount of video streaming traffic um over service provider networks so what we saw was on the order of 30 to 50 percent increase in the amount of data that was traversing those networks so from a uh you know from an operator's standpoint a lot more traffic a lot more challenging to to go ahead and carry that traffic a lot of work also on our behalf and trying to help operators prepare because we could actually see geographically as the lockdowns happened [Music] certain areas locked down first and we saw that increase so we were able to help operators as as all the lockdowns happened around the world we could help them prepare for that increase in traffic i mean i was joking about dial-up performance again in the early days of the internet if your website got fifty percent more traffic you know suddenly you were you your site was coming down so so that says to me jim that architecturally you guys were prepared for that type of scale so maybe you could paint a picture tell us a little bit about the solutions you're using and how you differentiate yourself in your market to handle that type of scale sure yeah so we so we uh we really are focused on what we call carrier grade solutions which are designed for that massive amount of scale um so we really look at it you know at a very granular level when you look um at the software and and performance capabilities of the software what we're trying to do is get as many streams as possible out of each individual piece of hardware infrastructure so that we can um we can optimize first of all maximize the uh the efficiency of that device make sure that the costs are very low but one of the other challenges is as you get to millions and millions of streams and that's what we're delivering on a daily basis is millions and millions of video streams that you have to be able to scale those platforms out um in an effective in a cost effective way and to make sure that it's highly resilient as well so we don't we don't ever want a consumer to have a circumstance where a network glitch or a server issue or something along those lines causes some sort of uh glitch in their video and so there's a lot of work that we do in the software to make sure that it's a very very seamless uh stream and that we're always delivering at the very highest uh possible bit rate for consumers so that if you've got that giant 4k tv that we're able to present a very high resolution picture uh to those devices and what's the infrastructure look like underneath you you're using hpe solutions where do they fit in yeah that's right yeah so we uh we've had a long-standing partnership with hpe um and we work very closely with them to try to identify the specific types of hardware that are ideal for the the type of applications that we run so we run video streaming applications and video advertising applications targeted kinds of video advertising technologies and when you look at some of these applications they have different types of requirements in some cases it's uh throughput where we're taking a lot of data in and streaming a lot of data out in other cases it's storage where we have to have very high density high performance storage systems in other cases it's i gotta have really high capacity storage but the performance does not need to be quite as uh as high from an io perspective and so we work very closely with hpe on trying to find exactly the right box for the right application and then beyond that also talking with our customers to understand there are different maintenance considerations associated with different types of hardware so we tend to focus on as much as possible if we're going to place servers deep at the edge of the network we will make everything um maintenance free or as maintenance free as we can make it by putting very high performance solid state storage into those servers so that uh we we don't have to physically send people to those sites to uh to do any kind of maintenance so it's a it's a very cooperative relationship that we have with hpe to try to define those boxes great thank you for that so last question um maybe what the future looks like i love watching on my mobile device headphones in no distractions i'm getting better recommendations how do you see the future of tv streaming yeah so i i think the future of tv streaming is going to be a lot more personal right so uh this is what you're starting to see through all of the services that are out there is that most of the video service providers whether they're online providers or they're your traditional kinds of paid tv operators is that they're really focused on the consumer and trying to figure out what is of value to you personally in the past it used to be that services were one size fits all and um and so everybody watched the same program right at the same time and now that's uh that's we have this technology that allows us to deliver different types of content to people on different screens at different times and to advertise to those individuals and to cater to their individual preferences and so using that information that we have about how people watch and and what people's interests are we can create a much more engaging and compelling uh entertainment experience on all of those screens and um and ultimately provide more value to consumers awesome story jim thanks so much for keeping us helping us just keep entertained during the pandemic i really appreciate your time sure thanks all right keep it right there the growth of edge computing and build out is the next key transition in the market telecommunications service providers want to harness the potential of 5g to deliver new services across multiple locations in real time as we start building solutions that will be prevalent in a 5g digital environment we will need a scalable flexible and programmable network some use cases are the massive scale iot solutions more robust consumer devices and solutions ar vr remote health care autonomous robotics and manufacturing environments and ubiquitous smart city solutions intel and hp are partnering to meet this new wave head on for 5g build out and the rise of the distributed enterprise this build out will enable even more growth as businesses can explore how to deliver new experiences and unlock new insights from the new data creation beyond the four walls of traditional data centers and public cloud providers network operators need to significantly increase capacity and throughput without dramatically growing their capital footprint their ability to achieve this is built upon a virtualization foundation an area of intel expertise for example we've collaborated with verizon for many know our audience appreciated hearing your perspective on the market and how we're partnering together to support their digital transformation journey i am incredibly excited about what lies ahead for hp and intel thank you thank you antonio great to be with you today we just compressed about a decade of online commerce progress into about 13 or 14 months so now we're going to look at how one retailer navigated through the pandemic and what the future of their business looks like and with me is alan jensen who's the chief information officer and senior vice president of the sawing group hello alan how are you fine thank you good to see you hey look you know when i look at the 100 year history plus of your company i mean it's marked by transformations and some of them are quite dramatic so you're denmark's largest retailer i wonder if you could share a little bit more about the company its history and and how it continues to improve the customer experience well at the same time keeping costs under control so vital in your business yeah yeah the company founded uh approximately 100 years ago with a department store in in oahu's in in denmark and i think in the 60s we founded the first supermarket in in denmark with the self-service and combined textile and food in in the same store and in beginning 70s we founded the first hyper market in in denmark and then the this calendar came from germany early in in 1980 and we started a discount chain and so we are actually building department store in hyber market info in in supermarket and in in the discount sector and today we are more than 1 500 stores in in three different countries in in denmark poland and germany and especially for the danish market we have a approximately 38 markets here and and is the the leader we have over the last 10 years developed further into online first in non-food and now uh in in food with home delivery with click and collect and we have done some magnetism acquisition in in the convenience with mailbox solutions to our customers and we have today also some restaurant burger chain and and we are running the starbuck in denmark so i can you can see a full plate of different opportunities for our customer in especially denmark it's an awesome story and of course the founder's name is still on the masthead what a great legacy now of course the pandemic is is it's forced many changes quite dramatic including the the behaviors of retail customers maybe you could talk a little bit about how your digital transformation at the sawing group prepared you for this shift in in consumption patterns and any other challenges that that you faced yeah i think uh luckily as for some of the you can say the core it solution in in 19 we just roll out using our computers via direct access so you can work from anywhere whether you are traveling from home and so on we introduced a new agile scrum delivery model and and we just finalized the rolling out teams in in in january february 20 and that was some very strong thing for suddenly moving all our employees from from office to to home and and more or less overnight we succeed uh continuing our work and and for it we have not missed any deadline or task for the business in in 2020 so i think that was pretty awesome to to see and for the business of course the pandemic changed a lot as the change in customer behavior more or less overnight with plus 50 80 on the online solution forced us to do some different priorities so we were looking at the food home delivery uh and and originally expected to start rolling out in in 2022 uh but took a fast decision in april last year to to launch immediately and and we have been developing that uh over the last eight months and has been live for the last three months now in the market so so you can say the pandemic really front loaded some of our strategic actions for for two to three years uh yeah that was very exciting what's that uh saying luck is the byproduct of great planning and preparation so let's talk about when you're in a company with some strong financial situation that you can move immediately with investment when you take such decision then then it's really thrilling yeah right awesome um two-part question talk about how you leverage data to support the solid groups mission and you know drive value for customers and maybe you could talk about some of the challenges you face with just the amount of data the speed of data et cetera yeah i said data is everything when you are in retail as a retailer's detail as you need to monitor your operation down to each store eats department and and if you can say we have challenge that that is that data is just growing rapidly as a year by year it's growing more and more because you are able to be more detailed you're able to capture more data and for a company like ours we need to be updated every morning as a our fully updated sales for all unit department single sku selling in in the stores is updated 3 o'clock in the night and send out to all top management and and our managers all over the company it's actually 8 000 reports going out before six o'clock every day in the morning we have introduced a loyalty program and and you are capturing a lot of data on on customer behavior what is their preferred offers what is their preferred time in the week for buying different things and all these data is now used to to personalize our offers to our cost of value customers so we can be exactly hitting the best time and and convert it to sales data is also now used for what we call intelligent price reductions as a so instead of just reducing prices with 50 if it's uh close to running out of date now the system automatically calculate whether a store has just enough to to finish with full price before end of day or actually have much too much and and need to maybe reduce by 80 before as being able to sell so so these automated [Music] solutions built on data is bringing efficiency into our operation wow you make it sound easy these are non-trivial items so congratulations on that i wonder if we could close hpe was kind enough to introduce us tell us a little bit about the infrastructure the solutions you're using how they differentiate you in the market and i'm interested in you know why hpe what distinguishes them why the choice there yeah as a when when you look out a lot is looking at moving data to the cloud but we we still believe that uh due to performance due to the availability uh more or less on demand we we still don't see the cloud uh strong enough for for for selling group uh capturing all our data we have been quite successfully having one data truth across the whole con company and and having one just one single bi solution and having that huge amount of data i think we have uh one of the 10 largest sub business warehouses in global and but on the other hand we also want to be agile and want to to scale when needed so getting close to a cloud solution we saw it be a green lake as a solution getting close to the cloud but still being on-prem and could deliver uh what we need to to have a fast performance on on data but still in a high quality and and still very secure for us to run great thank you for that and thank alan thanks so much for your for your time really appreciate your your insights and your digital transformation is a key topic so we know the next wave of digital transformation is here being driven by massive amounts of data an increasingly distributed world and a new set of data intensive workloads so how do you see world optimization playing a role in addressing these new requirements yeah no absolutely antonio and i think you know if you look at the depth of our partnership over the last you know four or five years it's really about bringing the best to our customers and you know the truth is we're in this compute mega cycle right now so it's amazing you know when i know when you talk to customers when we talk to customers they all need to do more and and frankly compute is becoming quite specialized so whether you're talking about large enterprises or you're talking about research institutions trying to get to the next phase of uh compute so that workload optimization that we're able to do with our processors your system design and then you know working closely with our software partners is really the next wave of this this compute cycle so thanks lisa you talk about mega cycle so i want to make sure we take a moment to celebrate the launch of our new generation 10 plus compute products with the latest announcement hp now has the broadest amd server portfolio in the industry spanning from the edge to exascale how important is this partnership and the portfolio for our customers well um antonio i'm so excited first of all congratulations on your 19 world records uh with uh milan and gen 10 plus it really is building on you know sort of our you know this is our third generation of partnership with epic and you know you are with me right at the very beginning actually uh if you recall you joined us in austin for our first launch of epic you know four years ago and i think what we've created now is just an incredible portfolio that really does go across um you know all of the uh you know the verticals that are required we've always talked about how do we customize and make things easier for our customers to use together and so i'm very excited about your portfolio very excited about our partnership and more importantly what we can do for our joint customers it's amazing to see 19 world records i think i'm really proud of the work our joint team do every generation raising the bar and that's where you know we we think we have a shared goal of ensuring that customers get the solution the services they need any way they want it and one way we are addressing that need is by offering what we call as a service delivered to hp green lake so let me ask a question what feedback are you hearing from your customers with respect to choice meaning consuming as a service these new solutions yeah now great point i think first of all you know hpe green lake is very very impressive so you know congratulations um to uh to really having that solution and i think we're hearing the same thing from customers and you know the truth is the compute infrastructure is getting more complex and everyone wants to be able to deploy sort of the right compute at the right price point um you know in in terms of also accelerating time to deployment with the right security with the right quality and i think these as a service offerings are going to become more and more important um as we go forward in the compute uh you know capabilities and you know green lake is a leadership product offering and we're very very you know pleased and and honored to be part of it yeah we feel uh lisa we are ahead of the competition and um you know you think about some of our competitors now coming with their own offerings but i think the ability to drive joint innovation is what really differentiate us and that's why we we value the partnership and what we have been doing together on giving the customers choice finally you know i know you and i are both incredibly excited about the joint work we're doing with the us department of energy the oak ridge national laboratory we think about large data sets and you know and the complexity of the analytics we're running but we both are going to deliver the world's first exascale system which is remarkable to me so what this milestone means to you and what type of impact do you think it will make yes antonio i think our work with oak ridge national labs and hpe is just really pushing the envelope on what can be done with computing and if you think about the science that we're going to be able to enable with the first exascale machine i would say there's a tremendous amount of innovation that has already gone in to the machine and we're so excited about delivering it together with hpe and you know we also think uh that the super computing technology that we're developing you know at this broad scale will end up being very very important for um you know enterprise compute as well and so it's really an opportunity to kind of take that bleeding edge and really deploy it over the next few years so super excited about it i think you know you and i have a lot to do over the uh the next few months here but it's an example of the great partnership and and how much we're able to do when we put our teams together um to really create that innovation i couldn't agree more i mean this is uh an incredible milestone for for us for our industry and honestly for the country in many ways and we have many many people working 24x7 to deliver against this mission and it's going to change the future of compute no question about it and then honestly put it to work where we need it the most to advance life science to find cures to improve the way people live and work but lisa thank you again for joining us today and thank you more most importantly for the incredible my favorite cube alums and i'll add these are some of the execs that are stepping up to change not only our industry but also society and that's pretty cool and of course it's always good to hear from the practitioners the customer discussions have been great so far today now the accelerating next event continues as we move to a round table discussion with krista satrathwaite who's the vice president and gm of hpe core compute and krista is going to share more details on how hpe plans to help customers move ahead with adopting modern workloads as part of their digital transformations krista will be joined by hpe subject matter experts chris idler who's the vp and gm of the element and mark nickerson director of solutions product management as they share customer stories and advice on how to turn strategy into action and realize results within your business thank you for joining us for accelerate next event i hope you're enjoying it so far i know you've heard about the industry challenges the i.t trends hpe strategy from leaders in the industry and so today what we want to do is focus on going deep on workload solutions so in the most important workload solutions the ones we always get asked about and so today we want to share with you some best practices some examples of how we've helped other customers and how we can help you all right with that i'd like to start our panel now and introduce chris idler who's the vice president and general manager of the element chris has extensive uh solution expertise he's led hpe solution engineering programs in the past welcome chris and mark nickerson who is the director of product management and his team is responsible for solution offerings making sure we have the right solutions for our customers welcome guys thanks for joining me thanks for having us krista yeah so i'd like to start off with one of the big ones the ones that we get asked about all the time what we've been all been experienced in the last year remote work remote education and all the challenges that go along with that so let's talk a little bit about the challenges that customers have had in transitioning to this remote work and remote education environment uh so i i really think that there's a couple of things that have stood out for me when we're talking with customers about vdi first obviously there was a an unexpected and unprecedented level of interest in that area about a year ago and we all know the reasons why but what it really uncovered was how little planning had gone into this space around a couple of key dynamics one is scale it's one thing to say i'm going to enable vdi for a part of my workforce in a pre-pandemic environment where the office was still the the central hub of activity for work uh it's a completely different scale when you think about okay i'm going to have 50 60 80 maybe 100 of my workforce now distributed around the globe um whether that's in an educational environment where now you're trying to accommodate staff and students in virtual learning uh whether that's uh in the area of things like uh formula one racing where we had uh the desire to still have events going on but the need for a lot more social distancing not as many people able to be trackside but still needing to have that real-time experience this really manifested in a lot of ways and scale was something that i think a lot of customers hadn't put as much thought into initially the other area is around planning for experience a lot of times the vdi experience was planned out with very specific workloads or very specific applications in mind and when you take it to a more broad-based environment if we're going to support multiple functions multiple lines of business there hasn't been as much planning or investigation that's gone into the application side and so thinking about how graphically intense some applications are one customer that comes to mind would be tyler isd who did a fairly large roll out pre-pandemic and as part of their big modernization effort what they uncovered was even just changes in standard windows applications had become so much more graphically intense with windows 10 with the latest updates with programs like adobe that they were really needing to have an accelerated experience for a much larger percentage of their install base than than they had counted on so in addition to planning for scale you also need to have that visibility into what are the actual applications that are going to be used by these remote users how graphically intense those might be what's the login experience going to be as well as the operating experience and so really planning through that experience side as well as the scale and the number of users uh is is kind of really two of the biggest most important things that i've seen yeah mark i'll i'll just jump in real quick i think you you covered that pretty comprehensively there and and it was well done the couple of observations i've made one is just that um vdi suddenly become like mission critical for sales it's the front line you know for schools it's the classroom you know that this isn't a cost cutting measure or a optimization nit measure anymore this is about running the business in a way it's a digital transformation one aspect of about a thousand aspects of what does it mean to completely change how your business does and i think what that translates to is that there's no margin for error right you really need to deploy this in a way that that performs that understands what you're trying to use it for that gives that end user the experience that they expect on their screen or on their handheld device or wherever they might be whether it's a racetrack classroom or on the other end of a conference call or a boardroom right so what we do in in the engineering side of things when it comes to vdi or really understand what's a tech worker what's a knowledge worker what's a power worker what's a gp really going to look like what's time of day look like you know who's using it in the morning who's using it in the evening when do you power up when do you power down does the system behave does it just have the it works function and what our clients can can get from hpe is um you know a worldwide set of experiences that we can apply to making sure that the solution delivers on its promises so we're seeing the same thing you are krista you know we see it all the time on vdi and on the way businesses are changing the way they do business yeah and it's funny because when i talk to customers you know one of the things i heard that was a good tip is to roll it out to small groups first so you could really get a good sense of what the experience is before you roll it out to a lot of other people and then the expertise it's not like every other workload that people have done before so if you're new at it make sure you're getting the right advice expertise so that you're doing it the right way okay one of the other things we've been talking a lot about today is digital transformation and moving to the edge so now i'd like to shift gears and talk a little bit about how we've helped customers make that shift and this time i'll start with chris all right hey thanks okay so you know it's funny when it comes to edge because um the edge is different for for every customer in every client and every single client that i've ever spoken to of hp's has an edge somewhere you know whether just like we were talking about the classroom might be the edge but but i think the industry when we're talking about edge is talking about you know the internet of things if you remember that term from not to not too long ago you know and and the fact that everything's getting connected and how do we turn that into um into telemetry and and i think mark's going to be able to talk through a couple of examples of clients that we have in things like racing and automotive but what we're learning about edge is it's not just how do you make the edge work it's how do you integrate the edge into what you're already doing and nobody's just the edge right and and so if it's if it's um ai mldl there's that's one way you want to use the edge if it's a customer experience point of service it's another you know there's yet another way to use the edge so it turns out that having a broad set of expertise like hpe does to be able to understand the different workloads that you're trying to tie together including the ones that are running at the at the edge often it involves really making sure you understand the data pipeline you know what information is at the edge how does it flow to the data center how does it flow and then which data center uh which private cloud which public cloud are you using i think those are the areas where where we really sort of shine is that we we understand the interconnectedness of these things and so for example red bull and i know you're going to talk about that in a minute mark um uh the racing company you know for them the the edge is the racetrack and and you know milliseconds or partial seconds winning and losing races but then there's also an edge of um workers that are doing the design for for the cars and how do they get quick access so um we have a broad variety of infrastructure form factors and compute form factors to help with the edge and this is another real advantage we have is that we we know how to put the right piece of equipment with the right software we also have great containerized software with our esmeral container platform so we're really becoming um a perfect platform for hosting edge-centric workloads and applications and data processing yeah it's uh all the way down to things like our superdome flex in the background if you have some really really really big data that needs to be processed and of course our workhorse proliance that can be configured to support almost every um combination of workload you have so i know you started with edge krista but but and we're and we nail the edge with those different form factors but let's make sure you know if you're listening to this this show right now um make sure you you don't isolate the edge and make sure they integrate it with um with the rest of your operation mark you know what did i miss yeah to that point chris i mean and this kind of actually ties the two things together that we've been talking about here but the edge uh has become more critical as we have seen more work moving to the edge as where we do work changes and evolves and the edge has also become that much more closer because it has to be that much more connected um to your point uh talking about where that edge exists that edge can be a lot of different places but the one commonality really is that the edge is is an area where work still needs to get accomplished it can't just be a collection point and then everything gets shipped back to a data center or back to some some other area for the work it's where the work actually needs to get done whether that's edge work in a use case like vdi or whether that's edge work in the case of doing real-time analytics you mentioned red bull racing i'll i'll bring that up i mean you talk about uh an area where time is of the essence everything about that sport comes down to time you're talking about wins and losses that are measured as you said in milliseconds and that applies not just to how performance is happening on the track but how you're able to adapt and modify the needs of the car uh adapt to the evolving conditions on the track itself and so when you talk about putting together a solution for an edge like that you're right it can't just be here's a product that's going to allow us to collect data ship it back someplace else and and wait for it to be processed in a couple of days you have to have the ability to analyze that in real time when we pull together a solution involving our compute products our storage products our networking products when we're able to deliver that full package solution at the edge what you see are results like a 50 decrease in processing time to make real-time analytic decisions about configurations for the car and adapting to to real-time uh test and track conditions yeah really great point there um and i really love the example of edge and racing because i mean that is where it all every millisecond counts um and so important to process that at the edge now switching gears just a little bit let's talk a little bit about some examples of how we've helped customers when it comes to business agility and optimizing their workload for maximum outcome for business agility let's talk about some things that we've done to help customers with that mark yeah give it a shot so when we when we think about business agility what you're really talking about is the ability to to implement on the fly to be able to scale up to scale down the ability to adapt to real time changing situations and i think the last year has been has been an excellent example of exactly how so many businesses have been forced to do that i think one of the areas that that i think we've probably seen the most ability to help with customers in that agility area is around the space of private and hybrid clouds if you take a look at the need that customers have to to be able to migrate workloads and migrate data between public cloud environments app development environments that may be hosted on-site or maybe in the cloud the ability to move out of development and into production and having the agility to then scale those application rollouts up having the ability to have some of that some of that private cloud flexibility in addition to a public cloud environment is something that is becoming increasingly crucial for a lot of our customers all right well i we could keep going on and on but i'll stop it there uh thank you so much uh chris and mark this has been >> Good morning, good afternoon and good evening. I'm Jeff Corcoran, Worldwide Go To Market Program Manager for the Compute Business Group. And I'm here today to talk to you about enabling and empowering your remote workforce with virtual desktop infrastructure or VDI. The pandemic has changed the way everyone works. And we're unlikely to go back to the way things were before 2020. The entire world has seen a dramatic fore shift to remote working. As you can see on the graphic here, 75% of CEOs say the pandemic has changed and accelerated this transformation. This brings with it a whole host of challenges. There are technical challenges like security and connectivity but there are also important challenges like culture and productivity to be concerned with. Gartner found that around half of employers now see remote work as a go forward motion for them which is opposed to less than a third before the pandemic. Of course there's work that you just can't do remotely. There the question is, how do you ensure maximum employee safety for work that needs to be physically co-located? 60% of CEOs say that their top concern is keeping employees safe and productive. It's becoming quite clear that the future is one of hybrid. It means that you have the flexibility to get work done regardless of your physical location. Because it's better for business continuity, better for employee productivity and better for long-term effectiveness. And employers are demanding it. Gartner reports that around 80% of employees want to work remotely, at least some of the time as opposed to those that want to work remotely all the time which is around 56%. This is because employees report the flexibility to work from home. It's a boost to retention, productivity and work-life balance. It's no coincidence that a JP Morgan CIO Survey found that the single biggest tech spending shift has been for technologies that enable remote working. This is seeing a 15% increase while other technologies in the rest of the market is flat to declining. When we talk about remote and hybrid work, one of the key enabling technologies is VDI. VDI is a client desktop virtualization workload. That's a subset of the more expansive spectrum of end user computing or EUC for short. These are technologies that allow users to access corporate applications and data regardless of where they are. Within this EUC spectrum, there are server-based computing which is sometimes known as application virtualization. These are for users with less complex computing needs. And then you've got the aforementioned VDI which is for task or productivity users. And then we have physical hosted desktops which is for the most demanding end-users. To understand why VDI has become so popular, we need to understand the benefits that it can provide. So you've got ease of access. And again we're talking about remote work, work from home. This is a way of life. So the VDI has the ability to provide that ease of access. Flexibility, so organizations have vastly different needs predicated on their users and their computing needs. So VDI enables organizations to provision right size solutions for their workforce. Less administrative overhead, you can now manage devices in the desktop to updates from a centralized location for VDI which is a tremendous boost. Resource consolidation, for those deployments where the users don't require full capacity all the time, you can see tremendous consolidation ratios. Data security and sovereignty, this is probably the number one reason why people go with VDI. You safely keep your data where it belongs in the data center where you have the ability to build a secure perimeter around it. So in this scenario with VDI, users are accessing the data. It's not on their laptop, it's in the data center. And now what happens is when they access it, the data itself doesn't come across the line. It's just the pixels of what that data represents so that it paints it on their screen. So if somebody were to intercept that stream they wouldn't get the data itself but just the pixels so security is greatly enhanced. And this is also closely predicated to performance. Applications reside close to the data, in the data center. So they're able to operate at data center speed, so think about 10 gigabyte or higher speeds. And so for those engineering workloads, for example that have maybe large models and they have lowered huge dataset with many different parts because this is operating at wire speed in the data center it happens very quickly. And this is a boon to productivity. It's a great way to realize the benefit of VDI. The process of developing your HPE VDI solution starts with identifying the types of users you have and understanding the applications that they use to perform their duties. That way we can size the VDI deployment correctly. If they provide or perform more simple office tasks or just a single function positions, these are what we might call task workers. So they use limited office, Microsoft Office, you know, they're maybe some word processing. But think about customer service, telesales, data entry, healthcare, telemedicine is a good one here. Perhaps they need more performance and they're oriented towards analysis or content creation. These are what we call knowledge workers. And this is probably most of you in the audience. Think about heavy office 365 usage teams and zoom for collaboration, web based SaaS apps. This is office workers, sales and operations, marketing, finance legal. And then lastly for those users that are really dependent on a heavy graphical usage, think about MRIs scans for healthcare, maybe complex graphs for investment bankers, maybe simulations or modeling and engineering, these are power users. So again, you know, CAD engineering design simulation, financial traders, geo-physical analysis for the energy industry, software developers and the media and entertain industry. These are great places for power users. Whatever the right mix is for your organization, we ensure that the solution provides each and every type of worker, the performance they need to perform the tasks they need to have success. Netherlands Cancer Institute is one of the foremost cancer research centers in the world. They were looking to improve IT agility and performance to support demanding research projects and dynamic clinical services. And to do this, we worked with them and deployed HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 with VMware Horizon for their VDI infrastructure. And what this did was supported during the day up to 2000 VDI users. And at night, the usage went down to 400 to 600 users and the flexible design of the solution allowed them to take advantage of this infrastructure. And they could allocate capacity at night to some batch jobs that were running to improve image sharpness of imagery that's used to aid in the early research of cancer disease. And what used to take one hour to work on an image, took 10 minutes now in this new environment. So they are able to increase the agility to run diverse clinical and research workloads. They (indistinct) their IT infrastructure to handle consistently and constantly evolving business needs. And it also freed clinicians to focus more time on patient care which is really what they wanted to do. And the quote here says that by spending less time working with technology, the clinicians were able to spend more time focusing on the patients which is what they, you know, what's the most important part of this equation. With the introduction of HPE ProLiant Gen10 Plus, we see a tremendous opportunity to help our customers drive better outcomes. For VDI that means we can leverage the innovation that the 3rd Generation AMD EPYC Processor provides. Improved clock speeds and increased instructions per clock will greatly benefit VDI workloads as well increased memory, so up to four terabytes per CPU. Storage and networking are no longer going to bottlenecks either as there's 128 PCIe Gen4 lanes to support this increased IO. This is twice the bandwidth that was available with Gen3. Great to be here. >>Hey what can you tell us about the Netherlands Cancer Institute? Maybe you could talk about your core principles and and and also if you could weave in your specific areas of expertise. >>Yeah maybe first introduction to the National Cancer Institute. We are one of the top 10 comprehensive cancers in the world. And what we do is we combine a hospital for treating patients with cancer and research institute under one roof. So the discoveries we do we find within the research. We can easily bring them back to the clinic and and visa versa. So um we have about 750 researchers and about 3000 other employees, doctors, nurses and and my role is to facilitate them at their best with I. T. >>Got it. So I mean everybody talks about digital digital transformation to us that it all comes down to data. So curious how you collect and take advantage of medical data specifically to support NK eyes goals. Maybe some of the challenges that your organization faces with the amount of data, the speed of data coming in. Just the the complexities of data. How do you handle that? >>Yeah it's it's it's a challenge and uh what we we have we have a really a large amount of data so we produce uh terabytes today and we have stored now one petabyte of data at this moment. And it's uh the challenge is to reuse the data optimal for research and to share it with other institutions. So that needs to have a flexible infrastructure for that. So a fast really fast network big data storage environment. But the real challenge is not so much the I. T. But is more the quality of the data. So we have a lot of medical systems all producing those data and how do we combine them and you get the data fair. So findable accessible, interoperable and reusable for research purposes. So I think that's the main shell is the quality of the data. >>Very common themes that we hear from from other customers. I wonder if you could paint a picture of your environment and maybe you can share where HP solutions fit in what what value they bring to your organization's mission. >>Yeah I think it it brings a lot of flexibility. So what we did with HP. Es. That we we developed a software defined data center and then a virtual workplace for our researchers and doctors and that that's based on the HB infrastructure. And what we wanted to build is something that I expect the needs of doctors and nurses, but also the researchers and to kind of different blood groups, blood groups and with different needs. So, uh but we wanted to create one infrastructure because we wanted to make the connection between the hospital and research that's that's more important. So uh HPD helped helped us not only with the infrastructure itself, but also designing and the whole architecture of it. And for example, what we did is we bought a lot of hardware and and and the hardware is really doing his job between 9 to 5 Dennis, everything is working within, everyone is working with an institution, but all the other time in the evening and and nine hours and also the redundant environment we have for for our health care that doesn't do nothing of uh much more less uh in those uh dark hours. So, but we we created together with A V N H B and B M R, is that we we we call it Fidel today, compute by night. So we re use those uh those servers and those Gpu capacity for computational research jobs within the research. >>That's how you mentioned flexibility for this genius. And and so we're talking, you said a lot of hardware probably reliant, I think synergy Aruba networking is in there. How are you using this environment? Actually, the question really is when you think about NK eyes digital transformation, I mean, is this sort of the fundamental platform that you're using? Is it a maybe you could describe that? >>Yeah, it's the fundamental platform to work on. And what we see is that we have we have now everything in place for it. But the real challenge is, is the next steps we are in. So we have a software defined data center, we are cloud ready. So the next step is to make the connection to the cloud to give more automation to our researchers. So they don't have to wait a couple of weeks for I. T. To do it but they can do it themselves with a couple of clicks. So I think the basic is is we are really flexible and we have a lot of opportunities for automation for example. But the next step is to create that the business value really for for our employees. >>That's a great story and a very important mission. Really fascinating stuff. Joining me next is one of our cube alumni. Breton McMillan is back the director of us, federal for AWS. Right. It's great to see you glad that you're safe and well. >>Great. It's great to be back. Uh, I think last year when we did the cube, we were on the convention floor. It feels very different this year here at reinvent, it's gone virtual and yet it's still true to how reinvent always been. It's a learning conference and we're releasing a lot of new products and services for our customers. >>Yes. A lot of content, as you say, the one thing I think I would say about this reinvent, one of the things that's different, it's so quiet around us. Normally we're talking loudly over tens of thousands of people on the showroom floor, but great. That AWS is still able to connect in such an actually an even bigger way with its customers. So during Theresa Carlson's keynote, want to get your opinion on this or some info. She talked about the AWS open data sponsorship program, and that you guys are going to be hosting the national institutes of health, NIH sequence, read archive data, the biologist, and may former gets really excited about that. Talk to us about that because especially during the global health crisis that we're in, that sounds really promising >>Very much is I am so happy that we're working with NIH on this and multiple other initiatives. So the secret greed archive or SRA, essentially what it is, it's a very large data set of sequenced genomic data. And it's a wide variety of judge you gnomic data, and it's got a knowledge human genetic thing, but all life forms or all branches of life, um, is in a SRA to include viruses. And that's really important here during the pandemic. Um, it's one of the largest and oldest, um, gen sequence genomic data sets are out there and yet it's very modern. It has been designed for next generation sequencing. So it's growing, it's modern and it's well used. It's one of the more important ones that it's out there. One of the reasons this is so important is that we know to find cures for what a human ailments and disease and death, but by studying the gem genomic code, we can come up with the answers of these or the scientists can come up with answer for that. And that's what Amazon is doing is we're putting in the hands of the scientists, the tools so that they can help cure heart disease and diabetes and cancer and, um, depression and yes, even, um, uh, viruses that can cause pandemics. >>So making this data, sorry, I'm just going to making this data available to those scientists. Worldwide is incredibly important. Talk to us about that. >>Yeah, it is. And so, um, within NIH, we're working with, um, the, um, NCBI when you're dealing with NIH, there's a lot of acronyms, uh, and uh, at NIH, it's the national center for, um, file type technology information. And so we're working with them to make this available as an open data set. Why, why this is important is it's all about increasing the speed for scientific discovery. I personally think that in the fullness of time, the scientists will come up with cures for just about all of the human ailments that are out there. And it's our job at AWS to put into the hands of the scientists, the tools they need to make things happen quickly or in our lifetime. And I'm really excited to be working with NIH on that. When we start talking about it, there's multiple things. The scientists needs. One is access to these data sets and SRA. >>It's a very large data set. It's 45 petabytes and it's growing. I personally believe that it's going to double every year, year and a half. So it's a very large data set and it's hard to move that data around. It's so much easier if you just go into the cloud, compute against it and do your research there in the cloud. And so it's super important. 45 petabytes, give you an idea if it were all human data, that's equivalent to have a seven and a half million people or put another way 90% of everybody living in New York city. So that's how big this is. But then also what AWS is doing is we're bringing compute. So in the cloud, you can scale up your compute, scale it down, and then kind of the third they're. The third leg of the tool of the stool is giving the scientists easy access to the specialized tool sets they need. >>And we're doing that in a few different ways. One that the people would design these toolsets design a lot of them on AWS, but then we also make them available through something called AWS marketplace. So they can just go into marketplace, get a catalog, go in there and say, I want to launch this resolve work and launches the infrastructure underneath. And it speeds the ability for those scientists to come up with the cures that they need. So SRA is stored in Amazon S3, which is a very popular object store, not just in the scientific community, but virtually every industry uses S3. And by making this available on these public data sets, we're giving the scientists the ability to speed up their research. >>One of the things that Springs jumps out to me too, is it's in addition to enabling them to speed up research, it's also facilitating collaboration globally because now you've got the cloud to drive all of this, which allows researchers and completely different parts of the world to be working together almost in real time. So I can imagine the incredible power that this is going to, to provide to that community. So I have to ask you though, you talked about this being all life forms, including viruses COVID-19, what are some of the things that you think we can see? I expect this to facilitate. Yeah. >>So earlier in the year we took the, um, uh, genetic code or NIH took the genetic code and they, um, put it in an SRA like format and that's now available on AWS and, and here's, what's great about it is that you can now make it so anybody in the world can go to this open data set and start doing their research. One of our goals here is build back to a democratization of research. So it used to be that, um, get, for example, the very first, um, vaccine that came out was a small part. It's a vaccine that was done by our rural country doctor using essentially test tubes in a microscope. It's gotten hard to do that because data sets are so large, you need so much computer by using the power of the cloud. We've really democratized it and now anybody can do it. So for example, um, with the SRE data set that was done by NIH, um, organizations like the university of British Columbia, their, um, cloud innovation center is, um, doing research. And so what they've done is they've scanned, they, um, SRA database think about it. They scanned out 11 million entries for, uh, coronavirus sequencing. And that's really hard to do in a typical on-premise data center. Who's relatively easy to do on AWS. So by making this available, we can have a larger number of scientists working on the problems that we need to have solved. >>Well, and as the, as we all know in the U S operation warp speed, that warp speed alone term really signifies how quickly we all need this to be progressing forward. But this is not the first partnership that AWS has had with the NIH. Talk to me about what you guys, what some of the other things are that you're doing together. >>We've been working with NIH for a very long time. Um, back in 2012, we worked with NIH on, um, which was called the a thousand genome data set. This is another really important, um, data set and it's a large number of, uh, against sequence human genomes. And we moved that into, again, an open dataset on AWS and what's happened in the last eight years is many scientists have been able to compute about on it. And the other, the wonderful power of the cloud is over time. We continue to bring out tools to make it easier for people to work. So what they're not they're computing using our, um, our instance types. We call it elastic cloud computing. whether they're doing that, or they were doing some high performance computing using, um, uh, EMR elastic MapReduce, they can do that. And then we've brought up new things that really take it to the next layer, like level like, uh, Amazon SageMaker. >>And this is a, um, uh, makes it really easy for, um, the scientists to launch machine learning algorithms on AWS. So we've done the thousand genome, uh, dataset. Um, there's a number of other areas within NIH that we've been working on. So for example, um, over at national cancer Institute, we've been providing some expert guidance on best practices to how, how you can architect and work on these COVID related workloads. Um, NIH does things with, um, collaboration with many different universities, um, over 2,500, um, academic institutions. And, um, and they do that through grants. And so we've been working with doc office of director and they run their grant management applications in the RFA on AWS, and that allows it to scale up and to work very efficiently. Um, and then we entered in with, um, uh, NIH into this program called strides strides as a program for knowing NIH, but also all these other institutions that work within NIH to use the power of the cloud use commercial cloud for scientific discovery. And when we started that back in July of 2018, long before COVID happened, it was so great that we had that up and running because now we're able to help them out through the strides program. >>Right. Can you imagine if, uh, let's not even go there? I was going to say, um, but so, okay. So the SRA data is available through the AWS open data sponsorship program. You talked about strides. What are some of the other ways that AWS system? >>Yeah, no. So strides, uh, is, uh, you know, wide ranging through multiple different institutes. So, um, for example, over at, uh, the national heart lung and blood Institute, uh, do di NHL BI. I said, there's a lot of acronyms and I gel BI. Um, they've been working on, um, harmonizing, uh, genomic data. And so working with the university of Michigan, they've been analyzing through a program that they call top of med. Um, we've also been working with a NIH on, um, establishing best practices, making sure everything's secure. So we've been providing, um, AWS professional services that are showing them how to do this. So one portion of strides is getting the right data set and the right compute in the right tools, in the hands of the scientists. The other areas that we've been working on is making sure the scientists know how to use it. And so we've been developing these cloud learning pathways, and we started this quite a while back, and it's been so helpful here during the code. So, um, scientists can now go on and they can do self-paced online courses, which we've been really helping here during the, during the pandemic. And they can learn how to maximize their use of cloud technologies through these pathways that we've developed for them. >>Well, not education is imperative. I mean, there, you think about all of the knowledge that they have with within their scientific discipline and being able to leverage technology in a way that's easy is absolutely imperative to the timing. So, so, um, let's talk about other data sets that are available. So you've got the SRA is available. Uh, what are their data sets are available through this program? >>What about along a wide range of data sets that we're, um, uh, doing open data sets and in general, um, these data sets are, um, improving the human condition or improving the, um, the world in which we live in. And so, um, I've talked about a few things. There's a few more, uh, things. So for example, um, there's the cancer genomic Atlas that we've been working with, um, national cancer Institute, as well as the national human genomic research Institute. And, um, that's a very important data set that being computed against, um, uh, throughout the world, uh, commonly within the scientific community, that data set is called TCGA. Um, then we also have some, uh, uh, datasets are focused on certain groups. So for example, kids first is a data set. That's looking at a lot of the, um, challenges, uh, in diseases that kids get every kind of thing from very rare pediatric cancer as to heart defects, et cetera. >>And so we're working with them, but it's not just in the, um, uh, medical side. We have open data sets, um, with, uh, for example, uh, NOAA national ocean open national oceanic and atmospheric administration, um, to understand what's happening better with climate change and to slow the rate of climate change within the department of interior, they have a Landsat database that is looking at pictures of their birth cell, like pictures of the earth, so we can better understand the MCO world we live in. Uh, similarly, uh, NASA has, um, a lot of data that we put out there and, um, over in the department of energy, uh, there's data sets there, um, that we're researching against, or that the scientists are researching against to make sure that we have better clean, renewable energy sources, but it's not just government agencies that we work with when we find a dataset that's important. >>We also work with, um, nonprofit organizations, nonprofit organizations are also in, they're not flush with cash and they're trying to make every dollar work. And so we've worked with them, um, organizations like the child mind Institute or the Allen Institute for brain science. And these are largely like neuro imaging, um, data. And we made that available, um, via, um, our open data set, um, program. So there's a wide range of things that we're doing. And what's great about it is when we do it, you democratize science and you allowed many, many more science scientists to work on these problems. They're so critical for us. >>The availability is, is incredible, but also the, the breadth and depth of what you just spoke. It's not just government, for example, you've got about 30 seconds left. I'm going to ask you to summarize some of the announcements that you think are really, really critical for federal customers to be paying attention to from reinvent 2020. >>Yeah. So, um, one of the things that these federal government customers have been coming to us on is they've had to have new ways to communicate with their customer, with the public. And so we have a product that we've had for a while called on AWS connect, and it's been used very extensively throughout government customers. And it's used in industry too. We've had a number of, um, of announcements this weekend. Jasmine made multiple announcements on enhancement, say AWS connect or additional services, everything from helping to verify that that's the right person from AWS connect ID to making sure that that customer's gets a good customer experience to connect wisdom or making sure that the managers of these call centers can manage the call centers better. And so I'm really excited that we're putting in the hands of both government and industry, a cloud based solution to make their connections to the public better. >>It's all about connections these days, but I wish we had more time, cause I know we can unpack so much more with you, but thank you for joining me on the queue today, sharing some of the insights, some of the impacts and availability that AWS is enabling the scientific and other federal communities. We're doing the remote interviews, doing the live coverage over the past couple weeks. We'll be covering it in depth. My next guest is Lynn Martin, vice president of government education. Health care for VM Ware Public Sector Thank you for coming on the Q. As part of the public sector day. Thanks for coming on. >>Thanks, John. It's my pleasure to be with you to that >>great to see last time you're on the Cube. We were in person and D. C is part of the Public Sector Summit, which is the reinvent for public sector is what I call it Theresa's big event. Teresa Carlson, who runs a U. S public sector. You guys a friend. You've been working together the partnership between VM where AWS has been so strong going back to 2016. I'll never forget. When I interviewed Pat and Andy, A lot of skeptics were like VM Ware E W s turned out to be great. Move at many levels. You're in the field for VM Ware driving the business. What's up? What's the update? >>So a couple exciting things. The partnership has been going great. Ah, lot of transformation work and co innovation between the two companies from the engineering side. And, as you mentioned, great a t the Pat Andy level on Ben. When you take it down to the field, support our government education, healthcare, customers. Great partnership with Theresa and her team. They've done a fabulous job, really, being at the forefront of the cloud transformation across those markets and our partnership together. No, it's pretty exciting. We have a lot of new product announced. It's coming out around our government. Go to market means jointly. So it's been a busy time with co vid and a lot of opportunity for both companies to really market differentiators for some of the challenges that are unique customers face >>when I want to ask you a little bit more on that piece because I know it's been interesting with the pandemic. You guys have had a nice overlay with 80. Invest with Teresa's organization obviously from it from a customer standpoint, Nice fit. Okay. Also, with the pandemic, we're seeing customers certainly doing more modern development. That's a big theme of reinvent also for VM World a few months ago as well. But the operator side of the I t piece is gonna be completely changed. I've been doing some reporting and stories around how not just the modern app site, but the I T portion operating these environments. It's hard in pant with the pandemic, so you start to see that operator meets software meets Cloud kind of world. Can you give your perspective of how that's impacted with the pandemic? Because it seems to have accelerated both i t operations in public sector and modern development of new APS and new surge. So, uh, interesting thoughts. I'd love to get your perspective. >>Yes. So I would say that when you kind of look back at the beginning of 2020 I don't think any of us envisioned quite what we were gonna be facing and what our customers, particularly in public and health care you know have faced. So we have customers jointly that are on the forefront of either providing civil services, national security, education to the students or commercial health care first responders right on the front line around patient care. And what I would say, the observation we had really early on in March was the acceleration of the digital transformation across all of those sectors. So lots of discussions have been taking place, and there were a lot of projects in place that would take a couple of years to probably implement. And I think what occurred with Covic is you really have to accelerate how you were gonna provide those civil services or patient care or education and parts of that digital transformation. I think we're taking for granted. So if you think of, like virtual desktop technology in the education space or, you know, SD when and network capability be of the cloud force for health care providers and things of that nature. So I think the portion played a bigger part in the country, responded to cove it in ensuring that we could do the things we needed to do virtually and quickly and out enabled, you know, speed to market and then infrastructure from companies like VM Ware teamed with an Amazon. We allow the acceleration for that journey. >>You know, the old expression. Necessity is the mother of all invention. Um, education and healthcare in particular really were impacted. They had a pressure points t do differently, things faster e education. We know what's going on there and health care with the pandemic. How how are you managing through this? Because, you know, you had a lot of business in flight prior before the pandemic. Now during and you've got maybe some visibility toe what growth looks like Post pandemic. You still got demand. So how are you managing it with from your perspective, your team? What's it like? How how are you as a leader dealing with this? But it's not like it's slowing down for you. It's increasing in >>demand. Yes, so are our segment was kind of on the forefront within bm where globally, um, we started working with different state, local governments and the federal government ahead of the close downs. You know, in one of the major large metropolitan cities, there were over a billion students that had to be able to be educated virtually and there were challenges around network capability, device capability, all kinds of things. So we've had a lot, a lot of activity and as a company. But you know, my segment, how to really work with corporate to kind of bend, how we do business business process rules as well, to be able to respond quickly and to be agile for our clients and provide different ways to support the needs of those customers. So then they could provide the kind of civil services that the country, you know, counts on them to dio. So I think from the internal perspective, in customer facing, we were able to flex, flex and move very quickly and then internally, within the organization as well. I would say, You know, February to June was almost a blur, were busy on weekend calls and things like that, dealing with all different kinds of situations and the organization as a whole. We were ableto flex and work remotely very quickly. I mean, we just used our own technology and literally upon the shutdown. The only difference is where you were working from, but all the tools, infrastructure and things we had were already in place. So anything from there and then as a leader, the third element, all out is kind of the human element. I think it's it's all an opportunity to connect our teams a little bit. Mawr. You know, you have to put more effort virtually more, all hands because more one on ones and kind of also adapt toe how they're dealing with the different personal things of educating their own Children and their family or caring with elders different types of situations as well. >>It's not business as usual, certainly, but it's, you know, challenging great leadership insight there. Thank you for sharing that. I wanna get back to the cloud impact I did. An interview is part of Amazon's Public Sector Awards program a few months ago or in late spring. Roughly, Um, there was a use case with the center and the Canada government, and the guy was kind of, uh, didn't wanna take sidewall Amazon. I'm not gonna be a spokesperson for Amazon. He ended up when the pandemic hit. He was so big fan of AWS and Cloud connectors example because he was skeptical, but he saw the benefit to speed can you give some examples of customers that you're working with that were getting immediate benefits from cloud in the pandemic. That literally made a big difference in what they did because you're seeing people highlight on, okay, just transmission. But people want to see examples. Can you share some examples where this is where cloud helped? It made a huge difference. And that's an example of what we're talking about here. >>Yes. So I would say, um, um example would be at M. D. Anderson Cancer Institute. Um, they had a need to really expand the connectivity off the facility to segregate patient care and ensure that patients that already, you know, had health issues were segregated from any other co vid patients. And very quickly we saw them scale and extend their data center in record time. I mean, things that traditionally would have taken years were done in months, you know, major accomplishments. In 30 days, a zai mentioned, you know, one of our large cities in the country had to really struggle with off 1.2 billion students in K through 12, many of which count on the school systems for, you know, their meals and things and how you deliver your virtual desktops in that environment. VMC on AWS for horizon is a great example that we saw across many state and local you know, entities in how they transform their education to those clients. Uh, and then the federal government. There's many examples, uh, you know, across some of the larger agencies as well, with BMC on AWS for both horizon and infrastructure as well. As you know, sometimes it wasn't one solution. They might have went a W s native for part vmc on AWS for part. And the combination of that really allows companies to come together in part to get things done very, very quickly. It's >>a great example of the VM Ware cloud on AWS success story. I think what's interesting and how I see you guys really doing well with Amazon. It will get to the partnership in a second. But I wanna call this out because you mentioned that earlier devices the network these air not usually associate with cloud usually clouds. You burst of the cloud clouds. Awesome. All these utility higher level services, Dev Ops Cloud native All goodness, But when you get down to what's going on the pandemic. It's the devices you're using. The desktops. It's the network working at home. How as much as that affected your team and your customers, Can you unpack that a little bit more? >>Yes. So what I would say on that is really when you look atyou out, you know the VMC on AWS offerings and you take it down to an example like the horizon platform horizon allows you with the V m c A W s power behind it to really present your virtual desktop on any device anywhere. And that allowed the education entities to be able to provide those curriculums to the students very quickly and, you know, not really have a big, disconnected downtime on how that was done. So I think you know, you're kind of taking cloud classic infrastructure that you reference and then layering in those unique use cases with the VMC on AWS offerings that then could be applied or telehealth. So you know, lots of examples across the health care industry with telehealth and deploying actually patient care via the M R solutions on BMC on aws is well, so it z really taking core. I t infrastructure layering on a software platform that then allows you to provide all those use cases, whether it be an NYPD or fire departments across the country or education entities or commercial patient care things of that nature as a second layer on top of that cloud infrastructure that you think of normally. >>Well, then I want to congratulate you and the team at VM. Where you guys doing? A great job. Like Teresa Carlson. You guys have a really good focus. Uh, you have a great understanding of how the public sector and commercial dynamics working with cybersecurity, going on all across there. And I just you guys there in space with them. You're doing stuff on the land and the ground station all across the public sector, and and they need faster solutions in the cloud. So congratulations. So I have to ask you, since we're here at reinvent, how is the relationship going? Um, where do you see it evolving? I'll see. We talked about the pressure of education, health care and other areas. I mean, case is gonna be re hall. That's gonna be a complete reinvention. Um, so a lot going on. What's supposed to give us the update. >>So I think that in general, you know the future off the public sector and healthcare space will never go backwards. And the acceleration that we've seen occur over 2020. You're gonna see that accelerate as we move forward. And I think the co innovation between Amazon and B M, where which are both innovative companies coming together to support those markets, I think we have more opportunity ahead of us then behind us. And I think when you look at just the great job Amazon has done in general, I was super excited to see Theresa pick up the health care sector. So we have a whole new space to work together on this year and really lots of exciting, innovative offerings to support both patient care and pharmaceuticals, life science and our payer community across the health care sector, as well as some of the work we've already been doing in the public sector. But given the dynamics in the future outlook of the industry, there's gonna require lots of innovation and different kinds of things to really partner together technically and, you know, aligning our go to market around primarily the customer needs. So I think what's very unique about our partnership in the public and healthcare space is we focus first on the customer needs and the mission of those customers and what they need to achieve. And both companies come to the table with, you know, incredible innovation around solutions to support that market. >>It's a great, great partnership, I gotta say, from a technology standpoint, after Raghu VM Ware when they did this, he's like It's a much deeper It's a real deal is not just the Barney deal is everyone kind of knows the old school, uh, phrases saying It's not really a deal. You guys have really integrated in the field on the customer activities. Strong final question for you You don't mind, um, here it reinvent. You know, people are remote. There's gonna be three weeks, a lot of live coverage. Cube Game day will be doing a lot of support and coverage. But for the audience watching this, what would you say is the most important story people should think about or, um, look at harder. I'm when it comes to cloud collision of public sector and what's gonna happen post pandemic because there's gonna be a new reality. There's gonna be growth strategies that will be in play. Some projects will be doubled down on some may not continue. What's your What's your advice to folks watching? What should they pay attention to this reinvent. >>So I think the number one thing is to really embrace the change going around you. And, you know, I think Amazon will be on the forefront of leading a lot of great innovation in that area. And it's really trying to be open minded about how you take advantage of the things that are coming out and be able to apply that into your infrastructure. So if you look across our customer base, you know there's lots of changes you mentioned. I don't think we'll ever go backwards. And those that will be able to move forward quicker are going to be the ones that embrace the change and really lead and drive that innovation within their organization in reinventing themselves through the kind of technology that a company like Amazon and beyond, where bring to the table >>great insight. Lynn And also there's a lot of great problems to solve and societal benefits a lot of need and you guys doing great work. Thanks for your leadership. And, uh, great conversation. Yeah. >>Yeah. And to be fair, right? They didn't tweet it. It's always fun. >> The energy that you guys kicked off everything with this morning, the keynote, it was awesome, it was electric. I love the numbers that you started with. Boomi World '18 was about 11 months ago and we were talking, I was watching those videos back the other day, you had about 7500 customers then. You now have over 9000 customers in 80 plus countries, over 1500 endpoints integrated, 580 partners, I could go on and on, 97% renewal rate. (laughs) >> Keep selling! >> It's amazing, though, the momentum that you guys have carried into D.C. in just a short time period. Tell us about that. >> Lisa, it's really been the result of not only hard work by our team, we continue to innovate for our product and bring new things to market. But it's our customers that drive adoption and we use customer references to gain new customers and it's their stories that resonate with the new prospects that come onboard. It's our 580 partners making sure that when our customers and prospects buy into the Boomi platform that they get implemented and they shorten the timeframe and they bring intelligence and smarts and it's our community. It's the 65,000 people that are already there solving problems, that are helping our newer customers get onboarded and get success early. So it's those four legs of the stool. It's the entire ecosystem that continues to go, all of us are going along for the ride. >> Last year we asked you what you were investing in, your team as well. And the theme was pretty consistent across the board. Product first and foremost. 'Cause the product is continuing to grow and enabling platform, some great stuff there go to market, and then the customer success equation, not customer success organization, although you have a lot there, the equation... Where are you guys this year on those three points? >> Yeah, so tremendous investment in the product. You're going to hear tons of announcements. My announcements are the tip of the iceberg. We've got huge announcements in API management and the things that we're doing there. There's event-driven architecture announcements, there's the conversational AI; we're adding voice to integration platform service, with the help of Accenture. So you can now talk to your platform and interact with your enterprise applications. That's just the tip of the iceberg on the product side. We've got data hub things and so on. When we look at the other parts, John, particularly around customer success, we're doing really well there. Our customer success rate, our retention rate is now 95-96%. Our customer satisfaction was around 97%. And it's our customer success organization that helps make sure our services are being implemented, our partners are doing the right thing, success and outcomes are being delivered, and we engage to make sure that happens. If you need a little bit of Boomi help, Boomi help comes. And we partner over the success of that, and I think when you look at the key KPIs around churn and retention, as well as customer SaaS, I think we're doing a really nice job there. >> On the follow-up on that, one of the things we've been observing and reporting on SiliconANGLE and theCUBE is the successful companies are the ones that have, that was a great product, but in the cloud era, data's a big part of it. You guys have unified data platform. We talked about this last year, how you have anonymous data, you mentioned on your keynote that you get insights. So this is again, Coupa software does this, a lot of the successful profitable companies have a nice business model, by leveraging the data. How does that fit into the equation for customer success? I want you to explain the equation specifically. I mean, you guys have great format for customer focus, I get that, but what is the equation now that you have this unique modern value proposition? >> Yeah I think the equation for us is quite simple. So we do leverage all the metadata. Every single process that's ever been run, we know how long it took, did it have an error? We know how people build connections, we have that meta, we leverage that for our customers. When we look at our customers, we have a life cycle that we walk them through. When you're talking about the equation, we have a framework, a life cycle. How do we engage in sales to make sure sales is not overselling it? How do we get them to close so they look at us as a partner? How do we make sure the implementation goes well? Will they view it alone, with a partner, or with us? Get them to success. Get them through a renewal, and then how can we help them land and expand and do more things in their enterprise to continue the winning success that they established initially. >> You talked this morning revealing Boomi's competitive, unfair competitive advantage in customers, one of the things that we talk about, Chris, at every show and you probably talk about this all the time, too, is data. It's the new oil. It's gold. It's the lifeblood of a business. Yes! If an organization, whether it is an incumbent established business that might have brittle technology and disparate systems, if that type of company can't actually see all the data, have the visibility, and ensure that all of the endpoints are sharing from a single source of truth, that data value is capped, right? You guys leveraging that. I think it's over 30 Terabytes of anonymized metadata? >> Chris: It is. >> Is a great example of unlocking the power of the data that you have to make your customers better, to make them more successful and keep them, which you've obviously done. >> Yeah, it's a part of the ecosystem play that I continuously talk about. As customers use our platform, they instill it with their knowledge, experience, and their expertise. What we do, as a pure cloud provider, because I store how they map this field to that field, how long this process took, and all of these kind of things to make up that repository, I can now, as a cloud platform lever that up. And I can increase the productivity for everybody in the ecosystem. So as customers put a little bit in themselves, they get a 10x return or a massive return out, in terms of productivity and leverage that our platform's able to provide, but it takes both of us together to do that. >> Chris, I want to talk about the hard news this morning. You guys announced with Accenture, a big partnership around conversational AI. Accenture was on stage, their brand, their expertise, coming together with you guys, in a joint partnership. Could you explain, for a minute, what that is about? Just take a minute to explain the partnership and the solution specifically. >> Yeah, so when you look at conversational AI, it's the use of natural language, right? To work with technology, and you can't preprogram it, you have to understand the variations of things, you have to understand voice as identity, so when I say my pipeline report, it knows it's me, it's my authorization, it gets my data. Accenture brings the conversational AI experience, technology, and solutions to the table. And we're now linking and partnering that into our integration capabilities and connective capabilities. So as a net result, people can talk to their phone and interact with their workflows, and interact with their datastores to get data, approve workflows, etc, in a very natural way, >> What is Boomi do and what does Accenture do? 'Cause they're involved with you. You guys have a team, you're teamed up. What's the relationship? Take a minute to explain the relationship. Who's doing what? >> So, Accenture brings much of the voice capabilities. So when we mentioned this morning that language isn't a barrier, I'd like to offer up this service in Spanish and French and English, etc. Accenture does all of that work. So they're the natural language processing there, the language independent part of that, and we're all the connectivity part. We are the workflows, we are the integration. Accenture feeds us something, whether it comes, it can come in multiple languages over WhatsApp, chat, voice, it doesn't matter, comes to me, and then we do the natural unlocking of the data. >> That's their converse piece, that converse and Boomi, working together? >> Yeah, so B in the Boomiverse, you mean? >> John: Yeah. >> So, Boomiverse and B, the introduction of our astronaut B, who going to lead you on a mission through our community and be your bot. It's a working bot and we're going to leverage that kind of capability through that as well. >> One of the interesting things about the conversational AI is that we all as consumers have interacted probably pretty recently with a call center for something. And I love how Leticia, who's going to be on from Accenture later today with John and me, was talking about, we've all been there going, "Agent, agent, agent." And a few months ago, while working for theCUBE, I realized, oh actually, as frustrating as it is sometimes, we have the opportunity to help train the models. But I'd love to get your perspective on what Boomi and Accenture are seeing in organizations, executive suites about the perception of conversational AI and the impact. They see the impact possibilities that Accenture and Boomi can bring, and are they ready for that? >> I think there's going to be a bit of an educational process with leaders in the business, but if you look at Leticia's, I think, second slide, where she says, "Seven million dollars being spent "on password resets with humans." When voice is your identity, you don't need that anymore. You don't have to remember passwords. You don't have to reset things. The immense benefit for organizations is huge. 25% reduction in Op-Ecs. That's going to get people's attention. They're going to have to work our way through it, and we're going to work through the process with them. Okay, let's do a small thing, let's try it out, let's get it working, let's scale it, and let's get it to enterprise. >> It speaks to integration opportunity. I mean, voice, video, other mediums, it's an integration game. That's what you guys are doing. And that's the whole benefit of Boomi. I'd love to get your thoughts on your success formula and how you guys are going to ride this wave going forward, 'cause you have a modern infrastructure, modern solution, you get projects off the ground quickly for customers, you get the value quickly. This is a mega trend. People, they don't want projects back at them, they want to get them done quick. You guys are solving that big problem. What's next? Where are you investing? What's your thoughts on the business? What do you do? >> Well in terms of what's next, so we really did go after the entire transformation problem. Integration's not just data to us. It's people. It's devices, it's your processes, right? So we look at it holistically, we've done that. We brought intelligence in so now we're providing insights, data privacy insights that we talked about in the keynotes, conversational AI and that's the start. But we've got to do a better job of dashboards, other insights, what is the return on investment of a Boomi purchase and how much is it helping? To what degree is transform making a bottom line impact in your business? Having the analytics to support that is going to be big. >> Lisa and I were talking on the intro round, you can't hide success anymore. You can't hide the ball. 'Cause your instrument, the outcomes, and the outcomes are either you're getting paid for value, or you're achieving a mission, whether it's the veterans or the American Cancer Institute, usage of an app, you can't hide the ball anymore! It's either success or not. You guys are very customer centric. Hundreds of use cases, best practices. This is your focus. The people part of success has been a missing link in the digital transmission: process, technology, people, culture. You guys are breaking through. Is that because the winds people are getting? Is that the energy? Is that the people? What's the people equation on your end? You've been so successful with, you guys are having success there. >> The Boomi culture, when we talk internally, who are we and what do we value? One of the first things we talk about is, we are customer-first. What that means to us is outcomes matter. It's not about buying our technology. It's not about getting data; it's about an outcome. And we talked a lot about outcomes today. In fact, at this show, throughout all the presentations, there will be roughly 100 different customer outcome stories that are shared globally. So when we talk about breaking through, because we want to partner with them and join them in their goal, and whatever it takes to do that, that starts to resonate. It's taken a while to resonate, but now it really is, and when you feel the energy on the floor, I hope you guys feel the same thing, it's just enormous and it's really starting to grow and we couldn't be happier. >> One of the cool things that I heard yesterday, Chris, I have had the opportunity to talk to a number of your customers in the last week who said, I always say, "Tell me about the differentiators, "the technical differentiators." The cloud native always comes up, the low-code. We talked yesterday about CFOs becoming citizen developers, and I thought, Wow, really? Do they know that? But on the business side, resoundingly, customers are saying cultural alignment. "Boomi understands our business." And so what you guys are enabling on the transformation of people side, as John mentioned, you're delivering that because it was one of the things that customers have said that was one of the deciding factors in going with Boomi, and they'll say, "We evaluated A, B, and C." And this cultural alignment. Yeah, I mean, Boomi has fans and it sounds kind of cliche to say, it's true! >> I appreciate that, and that is really great to hear! I stood up on stage last year and this year, and repeated the phrase, "I don't want to be their software vendor." I don't think of it that way. Nobody on my team thinks about it that way. We're building. I want to be your transformation partner. I want to be a part of, a piece of, how you're moving your business forward. Whatever it takes to do that: workflows, mobile applications, data integration, warehouse problems, insights. We can get engaged in all of that. We can go end to end in your enterprise, to open it up for you, and then provide access for your customers in ways you never dreamed of. And being a part of that is just an awesome thing for us. >> Chris, I want to get your reaction to some comment Michael Dell made, two comments Michael Dell made to me on theCUBE. 2014, I asked him, besides VMWare, the crown jewel of Dell technologies, what are you excited about? He said "Pivitol." He was fixated on Pivitol at that time. Okay, Pivitol goes public. They get bought back into the fold, it's all going on. Last year at this event, I asked him, What are you focused on this year? Now what's getting your focus? He goes, "Boomi." What's your reaction to that? Because you know Michael, when he gets fixated on something, things happen. What's your reaction to that? >> My reaction is "Thank you, Michael, "for the brand awareness." I certainly appreciate that. Certainly when he focuses on 'em, it gets attention. We have, the Boomi business as it gets capitalized by Dell has had 100% executive support everything we've ever asked for as a leadership team, we've gotten and then some. Could not be a better situation for this business, the Boomi business, and then what Michael does for it, and as we push that forward, I believe and he believes that data is the fuel of AI in the future. It's going to be all about data, and Boomi sits right in the middle of that. >> And he likes to look under the hood, too. He's not just a business guy; he's a techie. So he's looking under the hood, he likes what he sees (laughs). Of course! >> When he talks to me about it, he's been pleased with the results to date, I'll say that. >> Excellent. Well, we have this, great, as we wrap things up, a story that is near and dear to, not just my heart, but many hearts. Talk to us about what this is. What Boomi is doing with the American Cancer Society, which I think is just phenomenal. >> Lisa, I really appreciate it. So, this morning, and I'll just kind of hold this up for a moment, but, this morning we had the American Cancer Society as one of our reference customers, how they completed nine projects in 14 months, one of which impacted 30,000 patients achieving 500,000, half a million rides, and integrated together 150 partners to make sure people could get to their life saving treatments and back, and it's a volunteer network. We're happy to be a part of that. So we undertook a cause. We're going to have a pass the baton for the American Cancer Society here at Boomi World. And every time we pass the baton, $2, $1 from us, being matched by Dell Technologies makes it $2, and we're going to pass the baton here, hoping to crush it and get to a $20,000 donation. live from Las Vegas it's the cube covering AWS reinvent 2018 brought to you by Amazon Web Services Intel and their ecosystem partners hey welcome back everyone we're live here in Las Vegas with AWS Amazon webster's reinvent our 6th year I'm Jeff our table what they did six years two sets people rolling out of the keynote so much action we got another day coming tomorrow they're two great guests here we got dr. feci philomon is the general manager the machine learning and AI at Amazon Web Services and dr. Taha costs senior leader at healthcare and AI at Amazon guys welcome to the cube Thank You thanks itíd that you're here because I've been waiting to have this conversation Dave and I have been we just had an analysis of the distractions and glued up the stack around machine learning so much value now coming online that's been in the works around AI are really mainly machine learning that's creating a I like benefits and II just had to spend a lot of time with key nuts they almost a third of it around a I like capabilities and how Amazon integrates in from you know chipsets with elastic inference beautiful it's just good stuff so congratulations so what does it mean what does it mean for customers right now who want to kind of grok what's going on with Amazon and AI is that new sense the services coming online is that how long has been the works explaining yeah our mission at AWS has always been to take technologies that have been traditionally available for a few special technology companies and take that and make it available to all developers and we've done that I should say that we've done that fairly well when it comes to compute when it comes to storage when it comes to databases the analytics and we're doing the same thing for machine learning and AI and what we're doing because it's a new field is we've got to innovate at three layers of our stack to the bottom most layer as you saw in the keynote earlier has to do with frameworks and infrastructure so this is more for the people that fully understand how to deal with machine learning models and like to go in and tweak these models the middle layer then is for everyday developers and the data scientists and that's sort of where sage maker fits in and finally at the top layer of the stack is where we have our application services and this is meant for developers that don't want to get into the weeds of machine learning but they still want to use make use of all of these technologies to make their applications more smarter so they get the insight benefits get the insights have the day that without getting in town on the weeds exactly who want to get down in the weeds you can get down and dirty with all this other stuff yeah look at that right yeah and typically what we do with the top layer of the stack as we try and solve really hard problems and so customers can now take advantage of it because we've solved it for them and they can just take that and integrate it into their Apple quick what what's the hardest problem that you guys solve I mean traditionally speech recognition is a very hard problem that's one of the hard problems the other one is NLP natural language processing but I would say speech recognition is probably a hard problem and we just launched streaming transcription so you can now transcribe live as somebody speaks and of course you can connect it to translate and translate it as well live so great for our cute beers looking forward to having that on as a health care practitioner how does this all apply to that industry what kind of projects are you guys working on in that regard of course yeah so I mean to to posses point is want to continue to innovate on behalf of the customers across all layers of the stack machine learning in particular this week we launched Amazon comprehend medical particularly in a hardier heart problem where the majority of healthcare data is captured conversation and observations and unstructured formality so petabytes of data is stored across entire healthcare system that's a nun structure for form so to drive actionable insights and to be able to find the right elements to treat patients or to manage a population or even to do accurate billing it's been really an important that we can empower our customers with building blocks for them to build the right solutions to take advantage of that so Amazon comprehend Medical is able to understand the medical language and the context similar how clinicians understand the medical language and context for example if you're looking at a patient medical note Amazon campaign medicals able to with high accuracy extract medical conditions medications tests procedures being done on the patients as well as the relationship between those and understanding that context at this condition and this treatment go together as well as the nuances for example you know a patient has no family history of X or there's no smoking history all those are things in relation in the past or in the future or other members and this is really what we're really proud about launched an Amazon comprehend medical talk about how it works because you know I Healthcare has been a great field around where a is old-fashioned a is a queer when I wasn't doing it in the 80s early 90s ontologies were really popular and it's linguistics is kind of known but now that but you need that linguistics guru to do that he mentioned streaming the transcribed got metadata how do you guys get this kind of benefit when the balls moving so fast around these rapidly changing and verticals like healthcare because healthcare is got a big problem like other verticals where it's too many notifications what I pay attention to so much data how do you put the puzzle together let me first give you some context here as you probably we're at last reinvent we launched Amazon comprehend right comprehend is a text analytics service it helps you look into text and understand what's in there right we started out with general things that we could detect like people places things sentiment the language the text is written in and so on but when we started customers are picked on it and they're using it a lot but as they keep using it they came back to us and said hey it's great that you guys have this this you're giving us the capability to understand general language but some of our domains have some special language like jargon like yeah like take the legal domain for example right it's got charges and defendants and very particular things that are very relevant to the legal domain so they were asking us for a capability to sort of extend the comprehend to include their custom domain terms and phrases as well right so last week we actually launched a custom custom entities feature that allows them to bring in their custom domain into comprehend so the comprehend be extended to include their domain the so legal language is difficult to understand but medical language on the other hand is even more harder to understand that quick right acronyms jargon absolutely what is an entity looks like extracting that and extracting it uses alone yeah miss spells right but relating those entities together is super important because you could in one clinical note you could have multiple drugs in there with different dosages different frequencies and so you need to be able to relate those entities together right and that's the sort of thing that comprehend Medical allows our customers to do to solve some really so you're doing one of that entity extraction is under the covers is that right has it were I mean how does comprehending the medical work I mean just out of the box you have to train it there's no training meet needed know machine learning expertise needed so the algorithm extract these entities as well as the relationship between those entities and then also extracts any attributes that might be related such as negation or past and future or what's anatomy of the body relates one now all that is done out of the box and that's super important you want to know whether the patient's stopped taking a medication right yeah so negation things like that you want to know because that gives you the context just getting the terms alone doesn't really tell you much it each has had a great video about the f1 point of ethics imagine that for personal that's right you're not doing good right now take a break yeah so I feel like we're kind of now scratching the service of stress in the surface of health care yeah information yeah think about the health care industry for years it's been compliance-driven yeah whether it's hip Affordable Care Act yeah EMR and meaningful use right but the industry hasn't been you know dramatically transformed and disrupted and it kind of needs to be yeah how do you guys see that evolving I feel like you're now beginning to see that see change and that's going to take a while it's a high-risk business obviously but what's your sort of prognosis for that transformation and what's the vision as to the outcome yes now that's a really great question I mean one thing I mean one great things happen over the last decade is the digitization of your medical record so and that's really wonderful because before was all paper-based primarily unless you were an acute setting so now the majority of the US for example and globally there's this huge adopt adoption and propagation of these electronic medical records the issue there remains now when the majority of that data is observations and conversations as well as unstructured that that creates a different kind of roadblock for our customers and this is what we're hoping for service like Amazon comprehend medical that's HIPPA eligible means a lot of the early the compliance or help our customer meet their compliance needs that we'll be able to remove the heavy lifting of this undepreciated task about you know having in a large amount of time being spent on analyzing this text and extracting very low we're now with Amazon company and medical be able to really fast track that and be able to elevate it hit the nail on the head of the undifferentiated heavy lifting right that's the ethos of DevOps is that yeah let me give you some stats actually there are one point two billion medical documents that are generated every year in the US and 80% of them it's unstructured text so to make sense of that it's going to enable our customers to do some really amazing things one of the things one of the use cases that we see is its clinical trial recruitment so Fred Hutchinson which is one of the yeah the nation's top cancer research centers they recruit patients for clinical trials if you go to clinical trials.gov you'll see like 290 thousand four and 50 clinical trials open and typically from history we know that most of these clinical trials don't end up recruiting they don't end up meeting their recruiting goals because it's very hard to figure out which patients fit the clinical trial that you're actually trying to perform so comprehend medical helps these customers to very quickly narrow it down expand on the involvement of people in the community mentioned Fred hutch Roach has also been involved what I heard yeah what who was involved in this project sound it was a collaboration take a minute to explain that right I mean it's very similar to a lot of other services that we put it into the market we collaborate a lot with customers 90% of what we do is really coming from customers so we've collaborated with people like Fred hutch and some of the nation's top institutions to help us validate the service that we've built to actually make sure that its meeting sort of the requirements for those use cases that they are thinking of so we collaborate closely with them to get the service to where this today and we announced it as generally available yesterday ok so what's the use case I'll go ahead yeah I can expand a little bit some of the customers as well their use cases we're talking anywhere from hospital systems that when I use or take advantage of their unstructured text for things such as identify people who are for their follow-up appointments or stopping treatments or find an alternative routes to billers we're trying to identify it is accurate procedures were done if we account for all the procedures or care for all the billing which often time is hidden in those unstructured text and require a lot of manual process and often time the rules that can't really scale to things such as clinical trials recruitment how can you if example in Fred Hutchinson Cancer Institute use case for identify a patient and match them to the right clinical trial these patients often time have Harry Potter's worth of clinical notes down on the minute their longitudinal journey and to go from one institution another another and be able to really find it's no longer needed a haystack it's like a needle in the bottom of Atlantic Ocean and then be able to really do that match from hours and months down to a few seconds and that's really the beauty about the service John likes to talk about the 20 mile stare and I wonder if we could just look ahead how far can we take AI and machine learning in in healthcare and how far should we take it and maybe a more specific question as as a practitioner you know when do you think machines might make better diagnosis than doctors if ever how do you feel about that where do you see this all going I think I mean the whole idea about machine learning the beauty about it I mean the seta scope was introduced or how the thermometer was introduced in medicine and these are tools that we use to our advantage to really provide better care and and better outcomes and that's really what we're that's the mission that our health IT and customers and wanna are really driving tower's machine learning can do a lot of great things for routine things that human being can't can go and focus their attention to other things such as the Fred Hutchinson instead of going and mining these diagnoses in mountain amounts of data a machine learning will be able to identify that with a clinical staff can focus on care and that's really where I think I mean over the next decade and so we can see a lot of this advancement in in these building blocks as well as what Amazon's offering from forecasting and prediction algorithms Rana will be able to find you know fine-tune our capabilities to help customers achieve even precision medicine real-world impact because you're changing the workflow I mean someone's within the wrong line or the wrong process based upon their history yeah HIPPA HIPPA requirements really cause a lot of this record sharing thing to be a problem from what we've been reporting over the years it's kind of a solution to that so if I move to a service medical service I get all that records with me it's just kind of how you see going and how does other regulations that are holding you back that are blockers is that clear now how does that solve the industry challenge it's of privacy and if you look at the healthcare system today there are lots of inefficiencies in there right in the end this is all about improving patient outcomes and making sure that we reduce costs and that's what this boils down to and these are tools that allow our customers to do exactly that well guys thanks for sharing this insight comprehend medicals really awesome opportunities I think it's early days day one is you guys think right I think there's so much more that could be there I'd love to see the industry just from the personal is decided change it's just get out of the way of all these pretty broad hurdles get the data out there expose the data check the privacy box would be good right this is gonna change the game yeah maybe we should say a little bit about the how we built the service in terms of that right as you know at AWS security and privacy is number one for us right so this service is HIPAA eligible it's a stateless service what that means is nothing gets stored this is not the data is not used to improve the models or anything like that the only person that can actually see the data is the customer he's got the keys he's the only one that's sending the data to the endpoint and whatever he gets back only he can decrypt it so we've taken care to make sure that we can remove some of
