>>Welcome back to the cubes coverage of AWS storage. They were here in downtown Seattle, crisp downtown Seattle. Winter is coming we're to talk about the snow unintended and also the ever expanding cloud, the cloud it's in a way it's like the universe, it's moving out to the edge and to the data center, which is literally another edge node. If you think about it, Mark Curry is here as the general manager of AWS gateway and Sid Roy is the GM of AWS snow family. Folks. Welcome. Good to see you. Thank you. So mark, talk about how you think about on-prem and hybrid. >>That's an excellent question, Dave. So I represent a group of services called storage gateway, and that's exactly what storage gateway does. Is it bridges your on-prem applications with the cloud? And the way we do that is we deliver it with really four services that we all call it. We call it gateway is the first one being volume gateway. And what volume gateway does is give you a way to connect your block storage on prem with the cloud for file shares for backup is what popular application there. And, uh, for applications that can tolerate some latency and that's a traditional service, then we, uh, came out with something called virtual tape gateway, which I'm personally really excited about because we all know about, you know, the big clunky tapes that have been around for 50 years, that you have to have trucks pick up and go store in a mountain and all that, um, with the virtual tape gateway, what we can do is we all have our gateways install either as a software package on-prem or as an appliance hardware appliance, but we put the tape gateway on prem and the customer is able to back up their tapes to us. >>And we look like a tape drive, virtual tape dry. So what we're doing is we're allowing the customer to basically digitize in the cloud, all of their legacy tapes. And this I think is a huge industry and we've got some great customers there. One would be formula one. Um, they've used virtual tape library. Our gateway to, um, basically could reduce the recovery time from five days down to one. So big impact there. Uh, the next gateway is our file gateway. And what I felt gateway does, again, sits on-prem either the software package or as a hardware appliance and fell gateway exposed as both an SMB share for Microsoft traffic and then an NFS share for your NFS traffic. And basically what we do as we front end S3 with this gateway. And so the gateway caches, so your active workflow gets really great performance, but you can move your inactive data to the cloud in S3, uh, where you've got durable storage. >>It's, you know, it's over multiple regions. You can run all of our analytics on that, on that data as well. Um, a good example, there would be modernize. A company worked on the COVID vaccine. They used storage gateway the file version to move their instrumentation and scientific data into the cloud, where once it's up in S3 week, you know, we've got a really robust set of tools, allow them to do analytics on it. And then finally, but not least our last announcement was something called FSX gateway and FSX is a chemical product. So we offer FSX as a windows file system or file share in the cloud. Um, the, the gateway basically acts as a cache to that. So a customer can put our FSX gateway on prem in lieu of like a server of some sort, and we'll cash all the traffic for that active workflow again, and then push their inactive data back to the FSX file system in the cloud. >>Cool. Lots of ways to get data to the cloud compatibility >>Issues. So, excellent. Thank you for that. Mark said, >>We know about snowball snowcones snowmobile all the snows, where does that fit >>In? Yeah. So let me, let me talk about the AWS edge. First, the broader edge spectrum of AWS spans many things from snow to outpost, to IOT, where there's a lot of data being created at the edge within this edge spectrum. There's the rugged mobile edge, which is where snow plays, right? So snow's purpose is really to capture transform and optionally move the data from rugged edge to AWS, right? And in our portfolio we have different devices. Uh, so let me start with the stone device. We announced last year in 2020, uh, snow cone is a small, uh, tissue box sized device. You know, it, it, it is portable. It's highly mobile, portable, rugged. It can, it can capture data from rugged sensory and end points and industrial equipment. And once we capture the data, you can process the data locally right there. And then if you have to send the data back to AWS, you can ship the device back or use data sync to transfer the data back at VWs. >>Now, if you have higher compute needs, where you have what we call the core edge, where it's not portable, but you need to kind of process there. We have the snowball edge device now that can be single known or multi-node snowball edge devices in groups of clusters for storage at storage edge compute. There, you can process like large scale data capture and transform it right there with, you know, machine learning or other data management and analytics right there for real time and AI based edge local decisions. So I'll give you a couple of examples in each category. So for snowcones, for example, we are partnering with Facebook to deliver, uh, private, LTE based, uh, networks for, uh, remote and rural areas where the connectivity is not here there. Right? So, so, uh, we are serving those communities in partnership with Facebook to deliver private LTE networks. The second example I'll give you is with the snowball edge device, that multiple nodes, we, us air force recently demonstrated, uh, that ABM a system, which is the advanced battle management system, where they can do like a lot of data capture and local simulation with AI and ML on containers, right on the snow cone, uh, on the snowball edge devices. So those are two examples of how we're doing, uh, edge local processing and capture. >>Well, I think, I think you guys got it right. You got a lot of ways to get data on the on-ramps into the cloud, but I I'm particularly struck by your edge. You know, we didn't get into the it strategy, but the idea of processing locally, bringing machine learning, uh, you know, cause the future we think anyway is AI and for instance, where the data lives, right. And yet, like you said, if you want to bring it back and bring it back and we have ways to get it back. Right, exactly. I'll give you guys the last word. >>Well, I, I would just say, you know, our FSX gateways of relatively new announcement, it's got some really cool applications for, um, high-performance Microsoft applications, but also for remote offices that want to share files. >>Great. Have a new guest new to the cube moderate Tabla, the director of strategic partnerships for enterprise application services is joining me moderate. It's nice to have you on the program. >>Thank you lisa. Very excited to be here and hello everyone. >>So different this year. Again Virtual like last year we're going to talk about digital transformation and we saw this huge acceleration in 2020. The massive adoption of SAS applications. We want to talk though about IBM managed services for S AP applications. So before we get into that I'd love for you to be able to describe what your role is to our audience. >>Absolutely lisa. So good day everyone. I've been with IBM for over 23 years and my current role, I run the strategic alliances for IBM basically in the E. R. P. Space S. A. P. Being our primary strategic partner, I have a global team of architects and we basically look at market requirements. Talk to a lot of customers, talk to our business partner S. A. P. Obviously um you know, try to help them would come up with a solution. Well the transformation journey to the cloud and hopefully today, you know, we'll elaborate a little bit more on the exact work that we do in this space. So very happy to be here. Thank you. >>Sure. So we're going to dissect the IBM s. A. P. Relationship. I think you even worked at S. A. P. Before your 23 year tenure at IBM. So we'll get to some of that as well. But help us understand customers have so much choice each day. There is more and more interest why should a customer choose IBM as their strategic partner for this digital transformation journey. >>Well really, IBM has been in this essay p business for many, many decades. As you know Um we have many many certified people in S. A. P. close to 40,000 people actually globally. Um And we can help the clients in various aspects of their journey. So you know the typical cloud journey has four different aspects to it. Um You need the advice so you need basically systems integration services to help customers actually define the scope on, you know what they actually want to either upgrade, bring it to current as well as you know what workloads they want to move to the cloud. We can help customers with our Systems integration services called the Global Business Business Services in IBM we can help them with their entire planning, we can help them with the actual move to the cloud. So IBM offers a whole different variety of services for migration or not only to see ASAP workloads. I mean ASAP typically ends up being the heart of the workloads that any of the major customers run but surrounding SCP, there's a lot of other applications so we can help plan that entire journey for advice and then move it as well as in the interim. You know, there's also another step which can be some customers. They need to build net new and you know upgrade their applications to the latest technologies so we can help them with that. And then once the building move is over, obviously customers need help with the actual steady state run state environment and that's where this key service that we have managed services for SCP applications helps them. So our certifications with S. A. P. And the fact that we have consultants that are certified and all these different aspects of the journey can really help your clients. The other part, I would say that IBM is really a hybrid cloud provider. So obviously we have our cloud service, the IBM cloud, but we can offer this service meeting the customer where they need to be. So we are a client centric service, so if the customer has a choice of AWS or Azure, uh we can meet them left. So this is how, you know, we can really help our customers with our expertise. I know the data point to note that, you know, 70 80 of the enterprise customers still have not moved their workloads to the cloud. So this is a space, especially with Covid, as you've seen what's happened, you know, customers now are really, really looking to accelerate the journey because it's become a necessity, It's no longer something that our Ceo and C I O can push to the right, right, this is something they have to act now. So I began with all these various services, you know, specifically good in the S A. P area. Um, and given that we've been managing these production workloads for a lot of these enterprise customers on our cloud services for many, many years, we have the experience, we can truly help them with their journey >>And as you said, that's so critical of these days. One of the things that I think we learned in 2020 is is there was no time like the present, it really became such a massive shift that for business survival, those that weren't digitized definitely were in some hot water. Talk to me. So you talked about the IBM s, a P relationship being longstanding, Can you talk to me about the different aspects of the alliance and how that helps you guys to meet customers where they are? >>Sure. Um so s. a. p. and idea, we've been strategic partners for over 46 years. That's a long time. The partnership obviously has evolved over the years and I'll talk about you know a few of the different aspects where we've been partners um you know, the alliance initially obviously started, you know, IBM is in multiple businesses as you know, we have our one of the largest systems integrators in the world from a global business services point of view as well as one of the largest application planet services providers. So that's uh you know part of the alliance then we have our server groups, the power systems that IBM has. So that's another dimension of the alliance where um you know 5 6000 plus ASAP clients even today are still running um there? S a the applications on the power systems, whether it's on premise or also in some of the cloud deployment models. Historically we also had obviously the Database DB two alliance, but now with the S. A. P. S moved to Hannah um that's kind of a little bit of a mute point. Obviously it still exists, but most of the clients are now obviously being encouraged really to adopt S. A. P. S latest S four hana from the services standpoint. The other facet, you know, is really around the cloud services. So that's really our topic today right. Um in the cloud services area we have alliances with S. A. P very very strong alliances that have existed for you know, almost a decade now. Um as I said we've been managing the production workloads for very very large customers in many different industries, their entire supply chains. HR financial systems are running on IBM either in the old traditional hosting models um or also in our cloud models for the past 10 plus years. Right as IBM has evolved, so we have made sure that we do a whole different types of certifications with S. A. P. To stay current. Um many of these certifications are done either you know every two years, some are done every year. And if anyone checks, you know, the S. A. P. Service marketplace website which is owned by S. A. P. You can see IBM listed in all these different angles as a certified provider. There isn't another provider that can claim this breath in terms of certifications that IBM has done and that's why customers can benefit either from one or two of these services that IBMS provides or obviously a combination is a single vendor if the customer needs. So, you know, we have the sex, we have the credibility, we have decades of, you know, Delivery excellence in these areas, servicing these clients. Lots of the Fortune, 100 customers actually are running. Um there? S a p workloads on the IBM systems, whether in traditional hosting or in a hybrid cloud deployment. Some cases were actually providing services for customers that run their SCP workloads on premise. So we cater to that, you know, sets of clients as well and then of course others that are purely on our cloud. Um IBM cloud as well as hyper scholars. Yeah, so long >>list of certifications, that seems to be one of the biggest differentiators that you talked about me a little bit about how things have evolved over the last 12 to 18 months. in terms of how is IBMS focus changed for hybrid cloud with S. A. P. >>Yeah, so the focus changed if you know, you know, until last year we will call the cloud and cognitive company. Um This year of course the whole company has changed and we're going through a major transformation at the moment. We are the hybrid cloud company now. And that that name change means a lot. It means a lot in the sense that it gives choices to the customer, that's what the whole mission is all about. We want to make sure that customers are consuming IBM services and the IBM wants to meet them where they want to be. So there's you know, flexibility of choices in terms of hybrid, another cloud deployment model. So most customers in the S. A. P. Area, you know, they're looking for either just a pure private cloud deployment or they're looking for public cloud deployment or a combination and some are because, you know, there? S A. P. S. Footprint sizes are so large. Think about the multinational global companies, you know, and then they operate in so many different regions of the world and their data sizes of their databases are so large. Perhaps, you know, the public cloud really isn't a good fit yet. These customers are looking to move some sort of their workloads to the cloud. So that's where this hybrid cloud helps them. Because customers, you know, 90 plus percent of the clients today are really not choosing one hyper Scaler as their deployment option. They're really looking at multiple. So because they're running their workloads not just ASAP, but everything else, you know, SCP always brings along a whole bunch of other applications like tax applications and other interfaces, homegrown applications analytics that the customers are using. So if you want to take advantage of the true hybrid cloud and the benefits of all the various um, deployments and hyper scale is available in that region. Really, the hybrid cloud strategy from IBM is a perfect fit because we give them choices of deployment. We're not saying that you have to deploy an IBM cloud. Um, we're saying you can deploy either on premise VWs as your idea of cloud. Really what makes sense? You know, best sense for the types of war clothes that the customer is looking at. So that's how the strategy for IBM has completely changed to meet the clients, you know, for what they're actually looking for. Talk to me a >>little bit about the go to market so I B M and S A P longstanding decades old relationship, A lot of certifications that you talked about. We're talking about business critical Applications, you mentioned supply chain a minute ago and I can't help but think it how supply chain has been affected in the last year. What is the good market approach with respect to providing consultation services to help customers determine? Should we migrate to what Hyper Scaler and how and when? >>Yeah, so we can help them with that? Um, so hyper hyper scale is obviously, you know, IBM has been listed for example, as the leader in Gartner 2020 and you know, there's lots of other stats that show them that IBM is a leader in application services, in consulting services, application management services as well as managed services. So these are all different, Right? And you can see us being listed as a leader either it's in Gartner or I. D. C. Or Horse or Wave. And for many reasons and you know, IBM actually has one series of pinnacle awards from S. A. P. Over the U. S. How this helps the clients really determined is that, you know, IBM obviously does a lot of studies externally. We have internal as well as external facing views of comparatives of the various hyper scholars, um you know, including Aws, Azure, G. C. P. And so on. So when a customer comes to us for asking for advice, um, and so on, we basically look at our own intellectual properties, all the analysis that has been done. And more importantly, we look at the full scope of services that the customer wants is doing. What sort of a business are there in. We have industry experts, there's E. R. P. Strategy, um, folks within IBM. So, you know, they go after a certain industry and when they, let's say, you know, they've gone after the oil and gas industry, for example, they will look at multiple customers in that particular space. So based on their experiences, we can actually define the right road map for the client to be able to help them to move their work clothes to this hybrid cloud strategy that I just mentioned. Right? So that's how we can help them because we have the expertise in that industry as well. >>And I'm curious moderate in the last year with so much flux and rapidly changing market conditions, Did you >>see any >>one or two industries in particular really leading the charge here and coming to IBM. S. A. P. For help on this transformation journey which has been accelerated by a couple of years. >>Suddenly the retail industry for sure, right. I mean in spite of the crisis, I think the retail industry did pretty well, right? Because people still have to buy stuff. Of course, the whole buying behavior change. No question. Um You and I don't know about two days of, but for me, you know, I was never a major online shopper. Oh yeah. You know, I just about everything. Um previously it used to be select things here and there, but now it's totally changed, right? So that industry certainly has accelerated. No question. We've had a lot of those coming. The other industries that I've seen. The change in the last 12, 18 months is really, for example, you know, the banking industry and so on. Um IBM basically, you know, launched a lot of services in the financial services sector for this reason. Um So those are of course transforming very fast to keep up with the market. Um and I'm sure there's others, right? But these are the two that come to mind. Yeah, >>two that have been most affected and needed to pivot so quickly. In addition to health care. Let me ask you one final question here. Before we wrap. Talk to me about the advantages of using the PMC partner managed cloud s a P license resale model. The advantages of using that and the benefits. >>Sure. Um so we, you know, so far our discussion was really focused around, you know, the various service capabilities that IBM has in terms of our capabilities for helping clients with hyper scholars and hybrid cloud. We also need to spend a little bit of time talking about the operations model. Right? So when they're running their production workloads on IBM PMC is yet another dimension. So what PMC partner managed cloud is really some very limited partnerships that s A P does And the IBM is the lead on that one in this base. What ASAP allows is the partner, which in this case is IBM to resell the ASAP software license to a customer. So IBM has the rights globally to resell the license and why is that beneficial to the client? Because now, um, IBM can actually turn around the S. A. P license and have the customer pay us in a SAS model. So it basically is now an apex model where the customer is basically paying, you know, a monthly fee as an example, so there's no upfront cost to the client and they basically pay IBM and IBM PS ASAP. So IBM is kind of holding the risk if you will on behalf of the customer, it gives customers more choices, more flexibilities, better pricing approach. So if the customer wants as an example to buy everything the full package, including systems implementation services, deployment models with choices on a cloud, whether it's IBM cloud or others as well as the license itself. IBM has this end to end capability today. We've been selling it to several clients for a few years in several geography is right. So that's the advantage behind it. >>Excellent. Thanks for breaking that down moderate and joining me today talking about what's new with I B M and S A P, the opportunities for customers to accelerate their digital transformation. I'm stupid and my co host for today is Cory Quinn, and this is eight of us. Summit New York City. It is one of the regional events that they have, but these regional events are actually tend to be bigger and more exciting than >> many companies. You know, big events not say that companies don't do good shows, but if you look, we've got 11,500 people in attendance over 120 seconds over 125. A number of the customers such a fin ra and Gordon, who we will have on the program on good energy, a local show it is free to attend Cory. Before >> we get into the technology, though, there's a little bit of a protest going on. Here is actually the second Amazon show in a row that this was was that Amazon re Mars, where a protester talking about I believe it was >> something around about chickens in Whole Foods. Basically, she got really close to the richest man in the world. But the protest here, it's outside, it's going and it's about ice and border control was actually a very well organized protest. Security had to take many of them out for the first least half hour of the of the keynote. Warner stopped a few times and said, Look, I'll be happy to talk to you after, >> but please let me finish. I thought he handled it, respectively. But what? What was your take? >> Very much so. And it's, I think it's an issue with There aren't too many people you'd want associate with on the other side of it, Kids in Cages is not something anyone sensible wants to endorse. The challenge that I continually have, I think, is that it's easy to have these conversations. Now is not the time. Okay, great. Typically, it's difficult to get big companies to say, and now is the time for us to address this and anything outside of very carefully worded statements. So I empathize. I really do. I mean, as a speaker myself, it's terrifying to me the idea that I could go up and have to have that level of conversation and a suddenly interrupted by people yelling at me. It's gotta be nerve wracking. Speaking to 10,000 people on its own is not easy, and having to carry that forward with something that effectively comes down to a morality question is it's gotta be tough. I have sympathy for people going through this on work on Amazon, and it's I don't know that there's a great answer right now. >> So, Cory, I know you know You are not >> deep in the government space, but you were at the public sector show there and there's always this discussion as you know Well, you're supplying the technology. While Amazon might not be providing, you know, bummers and, you know, guns. They are providing the technology underneath. Facial recognition causes a lot of concern, you know, rightfully so that make sure we understand this thing. Security products in the light. So, you know, when you have the Department of Defense and Border Control as your clients, they do open themselves up for some criticism, >> right? At some point, you have to wonder who you do business with versus who don't do business with and the historical approach. Well, as long as there are sanctions or laws preventing us from doing business with someone, we'll be open to all comers. I some level I find that incredibly compelling. In practice, the world is messy. If things were that black and white, we wouldn't have these social media content, moderation issues. It would be a very different story with a very different narrative. >> Yeah, definitely. Amazon as a whole has a platform, and they have relationships. You know, Jeff Bezos has met with, you know, the highest levels of power in this country. They've got Jay Carney. The foot was part of the Obama administration helping with policy. So absolutely with great to see Amazon, you know, take a strong statement and you know, for good is something that we're hugely a part of and therefore way want to see all the suppliers you know, having a dialogue and helping to move this >> for you. And I think the lesson that we take from it, too, is that there are multiple ways to agitate for change and protest. You know, new developer kids fluent bid, you know, talking about the momentum of the company security databases on you know, the general adoption overall, you know, quick take for me as I love to hear you know, Werner up there talking about applications. It's not purely Oh, everything's going to live in the cloud and it'll be sun shines in unicorns and rainbows. But we understand that there's challenges here, your data and how we manage that requires, you know, >> a broad ecosystem that was the event bridge is something I would >> definitely want a drilling on because from a serverless environment, not just one thing, it's lots of different things. And how do we play between all of them? But since you do sort through and sift through all of these announcements, give us a date. It was there anything new here? Did you already know all of this because it's in your R S s feed Newsletters are you know what did grab you? >> Surprisingly, it turns out, in the weeks with you have, obviously reinvent is just a firehose torrent that no human being can wind up consuming. And you see a few releases in Santa Clara and a few in New York. But I thought I knew most of things that were coming out, and I did. I missed one that I just noticed. About two minutes we went on the air called cloudwatch anomaly detection the idea is that it uses machine learning. So someone check that off the business card of the bingo card. And at that point, you take all the cloudwatch logs and start running machine learning and look for anomalies discrepancies. In the rest it uses machine learning. But rather than go figure out what it's for, it's applied to a very specific problem and those of the A. I am l products. I like the best where it's we're solving a problem with your data for you. But riding guard rails as opposed to step one, hire $2,000,000 worth of data. Scientists Step two. We're still working on that. >> All right, so court cloudwatch actually e saw the event bridge that I mentioned, which is that event ecosystem around Lambda uh, Deepak, who we're going to have on the program that said that it was the learnings from cloudwatch that helped them to build. This may be for audience. Just give us cloudwatch. There's a lot of different products under that. Give us what you hear from your customers. You know where cloudwatch fits and, you >> know, let's start at the beginning For those who are fortune enough never to have used it. Cloudwatch is AWS is internal monitoring solution. It gathers metrics, it gathers logs, it presents them in different ways. And it has interesting bill impacts as a cloud economist. I see it an awful lot where every time you the monitoring company, walk around the Expo hall, you'll trip over 40 of those. They're all gathering their data on the infrastructure from Bob Watch and interpreting that. Now you're paying for the monitoring company and you're paying for the FBI charges against it. And I was sort of frozen in amber, more or less for a good five years or so. I wrote a bit of a hit piece late last year and had some fascinating conversations afterwards, and it hasn't aged well, they're really coming to the fore with a lot of enhancements that are valuable on it. The problem is, there's a tremendous amount of data. How do you get a signal from it? How do you look at actionable things? If you're running 10,000 instances, you're not looking at individual metrics for individualism. You care about aggregates, but you also care about observe ability. You care about drilling down into things Bernard talked about X rays distributed tracing framework today, and I think we're rapidly seeing across the board that it all ties back to events. Watch events is what's driving a lot of things like >> Event Bridge >> and the idea of an event centric architecture is really what we're trying to see Software's evolving into. >> Yeah, it's one of those things, you know, when you >> talk, you know that server list term out, their events are at the center of them. And how do I get some standardization across the industry? There's some open source groups that are trying to insert themselves and give some flexibility here. You know, when I want understand from Vin, Fridge says, Okay, it's Lambda and their ecosystem. But is this going to be a lame the only ecosystem or, well, this lay the ground work so that, yes, there are other clouds out there. You know what azure has other environment? Will this eventually be able to extend beyond this, or is this a Amazon proprietary system? Do you have any insight there? >> It's a great question. I would argue that I guess one of the taking a step back for a second. It would have to be almost irrelevant in some cases. When you start looking at server this lock in, it's not the fact that who there's this magic system only in one provider that will take my crappy code and run it for me. It's tied into the entire event ecosystem. It's tied into a bunch of primitives that do not translate very well. Now, inherently by looking What event bridge is in the fact that anyone who wants to be integrated into their applications, you absolutely could wind up with a deep native integration coming from another large, hyper scale pop provider? The only question is, will >> you great, great point. I know when I've talked to some of the surveillance ecosystem, it's that skills on understanding, you know, each environment because today, doing A W S versus doing azure, there's still a lot of difference, is there? Sure I could learn >> it, But yeah, and one of the things that I think is fascinating to is we've seen a couple attempts of this before from other start ups that are doing very similar things in open stores or trying to do something themselves. But one of the things that change this tremendously here is that this is a double us doing, that it doesn't matter what they do, what ridiculous name they give it when they want something. World generally tends to sit up and notice, just by sheer virtue of its scale and the fact that it's already built out. And you don't have to build the infrastructure yourself to run these things. If anything has a chance to start driving a cohesive standard around this, it's something coming from someone like Amazon. >> Yeah, absolutely. All right, Cory, you know, database is always a hot topic. Latest stat from Werner is, I believe it was 150,000 databases migrated. You called and >> said, Hey, why's amazon dot com on there? Jeff Faris like, Well, they have a choice. And of course, Amazon would point out they were using >> a traditional database for a long time and now have >> completely unplug the last in a >> long time. But they finally got off of a database that was produced by a law firm, and I understand the reasons behind that. But I was talking with people afterwards. Amazon does have a choice. Do they use, and if AWS wants to win them over to use their service is they have to sell them just like any other customer. And that's why it's on that slide as a customer. Now, if you're not in the ecosystem like some of us are, it looks a little disjointed of weight. C successfully sold yourself and put yourself on the slide. Well, okay, >> yes, it was actually so so the biggest thing I learned at the Amazon remarks show when >> you talk about all the fulfillment centers in the robotics and machine, learning almost everything underneath there it's got eight of us. Service is underneath it, So absolutely, it is one company. But yes, Amazon is the biggest customer of AWS. But that doesn't mean that there isn't somewhere, you know. You know, I still haven't gotten the word if they're absolutely 100% on that WS because we expect that there's some 400 sitting in the back ground running >> one of those financial service things. Maybe they finally micro did that one >> that's rather building in AWS 400. >> All right, Cory, what else you know either from the key note or from your general observations about Amazon that you want to share? >> I want to say that it's very clear that Amazon is getting an awful lot of practice at putting these events on and just tracking it here. Two year, Not just the venue. Logistics, which Okay, great. Get a bunch of people in a conference room, have a conversation. Do Aquino throw him out the end. But the way they're pacing the chinos, the way they're doing narratives, the customer stories that are getting up on stage are a lot less challenging. But then they were in years past. Where people get on stage, they seem more comfortable. It's very clear that a number of Amazon exacts not just here but another. Summits have been paying serious attention to how to speak publicly to 10,000 people once it's its own unique skill. >> Yeah, and you gotta like that, You know that. You know, the two first customers that they put on which will have on financial service is, of course, a big presence here in New York City. Gord Ash has their headquarters, you know, just a few blocks uptown from good, deep stories. Isn't you know, there there's that mixed that they did a good job. I thought of kind of cloud 10 >> one because still many customers are very early on that journey. We're not all cloud native, you know, run by the developers and everything there. But, you know, good looks of technology and the new pieces for those people that have been in a while, but still, you know, welcoming and embracing for how to get started >> and the stories we're moving up the stack to. It's not. >> We had a bunch of the >> EMS, and we put them in a different place. Okay, which is great news. Everyone starts there. But now the stories are moving into running serious regulated workloads with higher level of service is And that's great, because it's also not the far extreme Twitter for pets. We built this toy project last week when someone else fell through. And now we have to give this talk. It's very clearly something large enterprises. >> Yeah. So, Corey, last thing I want to ask you is you remember in the early days, you know, that public cloud? Oh, it was It was cheap and easy to use today. They have 200 instance types up there. You know, What does that mean for customers? You know you are a cloud economist. So need your official opinion diagnosis. >> I think it reduces the question, too, before you buy a bunch of reserve businesses. Are you on the right instance? Types. And the answer is almost certainly not just based on statistics alone. So now it's a constant state of indecision. It's rooted in an epic game of battleship between two Amazon S. V. V S. And I really hope one of the winds already so we can stop getting additional instance dives every couple of months. But so far no luck. >> So in your your your perfect world, you know what the announcement reinvented, fixes the problem. >> That's a really good question. I think that fundamentally, I don't I don't And I don't think I have any customers who care what type of incidents they're running on. They want certain resource levels. They want certain performance characteristics. But whatever you call that does not matter to them and having to commit to, though what you picked for 1 to 3 years, that's a problem. You don't have to. You can go on demand, but you're leaving 30% of the day. >> Yeah, and I love that point is actually taken notes fin rot. I want to talk to them because they say they've been three major re architectures in four years. So therefore, how did they make sure that they get the latest price performance but still get, you know, good, good economics on the outdated >> regulatory authority? It is one of the regional events that they have, but these regional events are actually tend to be bigger and more exciting than many companies. You know, big events not, you know, say that companies don't do good shows, but if you look, we've got 11,500 people in attendance over 120 seconds over 125. Before we get into the technology, though, there's a little bit of a protest going on. Here is actually the second Amazon show in a row. That this was was an Amazon re Mars, where a protester talking about I believe it was something around about chickens in Whole Foods. Basically, she got really close to the richest man in the world. But the protest here, it's outside, it's going and it's about ice and border control was actually a very well organized protest. Security had to take many of them out for the first least half hour of the of the keynote. Warner stopped a few times and said, Look, I'll be happy to talk to you after, but please let me finish. I thought he handled it, respectively. But what was your take? >> Very much so. And it's, I think it's an issue with There aren't too many people you'd want to associate with. On the other side of it, kids in Cages is not something anyone sensible wants to endorse. The challenge that I continually have, I think, is that it's easy to have these conversations. Now is not the time. Okay, great. Typically, it's difficult to get big companies to say, and now is the time for us to address this in anything outside of very carefully worded statements. So I empathize. I really do. I mean, as a speaker myself, it's terrifying to me the idea that I could >> go up and >> have to have that level of conversation and a suddenly interrupted by people yelling at me. It's gotta be nerve wracking. Speaking to 10,000 people on its own is not easy, and having to carry that forward with something that effectively comes down to a morality question is it's gotta be tough. I have sympathy for people going through this on work on Amazon, and it's I don't know that there's a great answer right now. >> So, Cory, I know you know You are not deep in the government space, but you were at the public sector show there and there's always this discussion as you know Well, you're supplying the technology. While Amazon might not be providing, you know, bummers and, you know, guns. They are providing the technology underneath. Facial recognition causes a lot of concern. You rightfully so that make sure we understand this thing security products and the like. So you know, when you have the Department of Defense and Border Control as your clients, they do open themselves up >> for some criticism, right? At some point you have to wonder who you do business with versus who don't do business with and the historical approach. Well, as long as there are sanctions or laws preventing us from doing business with someone, we'll be open to all comers. I some level I find that incredibly compelling. In practice, the world is messy. If things were that black and white, he wouldn't have the social media content, moderation issues. It would be a very different story with a very different narrative. >> Yeah, definitely. Amazon as a whole has a platform, and they have relationships. You know, Jeff Bezos has met with, you know, the highest levels of power in this country. They've got a carny. The foot was part of the Obama administration helping with policy. So absolutely with great to see Amazon, you know, take a strong puff statement and you know, for good is something that we're hugely a part of and therefore way want to see all the suppliers you know, having a dialogue and helping to move this >> for you. I think the lesson that we take from it, too, is that there are multiple ways to agitate for change and protest. What does that mean for customers. You know you are a cloud economist. So need your official opinion diagnosis. >> I think it reduces the question, too, before you buy a bunch of reserve businesses. Are you on the right instance? Types. And the answer is almost certainly not just based on statistics alone. So now it's a state of indecision. It's rooted in an epic game of battleship between two Amazon s VVS, and I really hope one of the winds already so we can stop getting additional instance dives every couple of months. But so far no luck. >> So in your your your perfect world, you know what the announcement reinvented, fixes the problem. >> That's a really good question. I think that fundamentally, I don't I don't And I don't think I have any customers who care what type of incidents they're running on. They want certain resource levels. They want certain performance characteristics. But whatever you call that does not matter to them and having to commit to, though what you picked for 1 to 3 years, that's a problem. You don't have to. You can go on demand, but you're leaving 30% of the day. >> Yeah, and I love that point is actually taken. Notes fin rot. I want to talk to them because they say they've done three major re architectures in four years. So therefore, how did they make sure that they get the latest price performance but still get you no good? Good economics on the outdated >> regulatory authority? Tell us a little bit about that in your role as a senior integration engineer and what that means. >> Okay, So, PS lifestyle, we're national Hair Salon were in thirty seven states, and we have, Ah, super niche angle. All of our salons are in senior assisted living communities as we focus exclusively on seniors and, you know, well, twenty mics in your life more enjoyable. >> Okay, well, that's that's excellent. We always talk about, you know, jobs of the future and where there is growth. Ueno the boo birds generation is, you know, creating lots of people, you know, in health care. And, you know, part of health is making sure you're feeling happy about how you look. So I don't need to worry too much about my hair. These days, but we do, other than just head say, the older generation >> way do some of that, like massage services. Just just Yeah, well, being >> very, very cool is, you know, definitely not something we've talked about on our program. And after nine years and thousands of interviews, it's nice to have some interesting angles talk about. So you're a senior integration engineer? My understanding from some of the prep is you're really working on cloud related activity primarily. >> Yeah. So I came on board about a year ago. I switched out of our operations, roll into a development role and P s lifestyle are looking too, uh, bring the internal systems forward. I've been doing a lot of work, a lot of writing the stylist in the field when I end up writing out their services that they perform everyday, which doesn't really scale. So yeah, they're trying. Teo, bring the services into the present. Um, get get away from having to write everything down. So we're building out like a It's not quite a point of sale. System is somewhere between point of sail on, like, an Internet s so that everyone in the field automate what they're doing? Our accounting team doesn't have tio re input everything that comes in. Andi, just make things flow smoother. >> Okay? So frigates inside a little bit, You know what cloud services are using, and there's there's coating that you're doing is is part of that also. >> So right now we're developing in a PHP framework called Larry Gill. And we're playing to both elastic being stalking a w s and s, um, and we're building. So we have off front ends our old Larry Gill in Elastic Beanstalk. Not back in. We're building a P. I's in Lumen and the micro services are in T. C s. So we could have been scaling. >> Yeah, and, you know, Cloud seems an obvious solution for, you know, a a highly distributed in environment, like as retail too often is. And you know your locations are Is that How long could you bring us? A little bit, as you've been on for a year. But how long has that car journey been going on? >> Actually, a year. Okay. Came in just as just a CZ. The company started developing. Thiss has been on the on the horizon for about two years. And as the study of ramping up. They brought on additional people such myself. Just a stuff up so that we could actually walk through it. >> Okay. And I was there, you know, eight of us, Obviously the leader in the spaces. It was there some consideration as Teo, which cloud they'd be using. There's >> no things they were already using a ws to some capacity for Like what? Press hosting. It was just a natural continuation of that with me coming on board I've been looking at Well, what if we do want redundancy? Do we do we try Multi cloud, You know that's now on option. You know, maybe we start exploring technologies like Tara forms so that we can actually duplicate environments just in case. On the very rare instance that eight of us does go down. Yeah, well, so >> is that a concern? When you know, people say, you know, a ws going down, does an availability zone sometimes have issues shore, But can't you architect around this, or, you know, >> you know, I mean, we've had issues where a w s has been unavailable to us for, like, non technical reasons. In that case is like we were we were trapped. Unfortunately, we were not in production at the time, But it's, you know, that's a little look, a lesson you learn once, and then you think, Well, all right, I need a backup, just in case something does happen. And I know it's, like, very unlikely to happen, so that that then informs, you know, what is my back up? You know how much how much dough I invest in the back of >> great? Yeah, because, you know, multi cloud is one of those things that people talk about when you dig down, It's like, Okay, we understand. Why is that something you're doing? Because, you know, I want tohave price leverage of one against the other. Is it? Is there a service that I wanted one that, you know that might not be available other? Or is it it's kind of insurance. And in your case that saying, you know, in the case that you are, Are you saying I think from an architectural standpoint, I'm not looking to run in both clouds all the time. But if I have an outage, I should be able to kind of fail over almost on spin, something up relatively fast. And another environment. >> Eggs. Exactly. So it's like way we're talking about, you know, possibly looking in Asia. Maybe that's a little overkill. Maybe we could just do with, like, a droplet on on digital Ocean Does our entire environment we develop in Dhaka. That's pretty easy just to pick up and leave, pick up and move somewhere else on DH. You know, maybe far standby environment is nowhere near as powerful, at least still running. >> Yeah, and so, so great. You know, you've got that containers is kind of the base level for free. How are you developing? You know what one of the challenges out there is, you know, digital ocean, great for developers. Work for the containers, but, uh, you know, please correct me if I'm not getting this right, you know, You know, Cloud today isn't a utility, so I can't just say, Oh, I'm running on a day of us and let me just take everything and throw it in azure throat. Indio, You know, we're like, there's usually, you know, some work and prepped to make sure that I've got what I need. >> There is there is so it's like, so right now, it's like we're focused on us so we can work with the tooling. And then, as as we start getting more comfortable, we can start looking at extending that tolling toe, be a little flexible toe with multiple providers >> and cloudy. And if some people you know, concern is Tio, you know, how do how do I make sure that my costs just don't kind of spiral out of control is you know, how does kind of the internal control, you know, is there budgeting process in place? Do you have? Do you have a good understanding around what you have today? You know, is there much growth going on and what you have? And you know what? I'll be down. >> We've been actually very surprising. That resource is that we get on our tier of VWs. It's like we're not even scratching the surface. So we keep looking at, you know, we need toe. Everyone says, Oh, you need to worry about scaling. You need to worry about this and that way Haven't even touched what we have s so we were right. Now our focus is more on just making sure things run and then start scaling us as we run into that issue. >> All right, Candy. Last thing. What will What brings you to this event? So obviously it's it's been doing more than virtual ization and canoeing cloud for about five years now. You know what? What? What? What brings you to this show? >> The community is fantastic. So I have been working with in a previous life I worked with somewhere, which is how I got it in tow. Vey tug. And the community around Socialization is just incredible, Very supportive. So it's like I try and give back, so come back. And >> so so just going to follow up on that. I know virtualization community, you know, very welcoming. And the like do you find in the cloud world similar types of communities? >> Yeah, so it's I've actually just started up, eh? Of'em will use a group and then a WS user group on both of those communities have been fantastic so far. I walk in also with PHP, as I said, and that's an entirely different community. I'm not saying it's not friendly, but it's a different style. >> Yeah, absolutely. You find different cultures and these various ecosystems. And yeah, it's very different. You know, the early VV number one, you've had people. It's like, Oh, I'm used to being about have to do a little bit of, you know, building on top of it. A Ws is definitely builders, you know, and what they're doing. And you know on that. So can we really appreciate you joining? Steven Armstrong, Paddy Power Betfair - OpenStack Summit 2017 - #OpenStackSummit - #theCUBE


 

>> Voiceover: Live from Boston, Massachusets, it's The Cube, covering OpenStack Summit 2017, brought to you by the OpenStack foundation, RedHat, and additional ecosystem support. >> Welcome back, I'm Stu Miniman, joined by my co-host John Troyer. We're really digging in to some of the practitioners here on day three of our coverage. Happy to welcome back to the program, a Cube alum. Not only that, a super user, and not only that, a cowinner Paddy Power Betfair, Steve Armstrong, principal automation engineer. Thanks so much for joining us and congratulations to you and all team. >> Thank you, thanks very much. >> Alright, so, we've had you on the program, bring us up to speed, you know, where's your OpenStack deployment going, where are you spending your time? You know, at the event and stuff. >> So we're just recently, last year, merged companies, so what we're doing with it at OpenStack implantation at the moment is we're migrating all of our applications onto it from the merged company, so we're in the migration phase of the project at the moment, so we just recently, just after Christmas, had the hundred applications onto the platform. Mayston, we're now up to around 200 applications, so what we're doing with it is we've got a single customer platform which is the Merscode base of the two companies, and then we're going to run different branding from it. So in terms of OpenStack, what we're doing is we're looking to do an upgrade in the next month, as well. We had the session earlier on today where we went through that, so hopefully that was insightful for the people that were here. >> So fascinating, I'll tell you what, one of the, you know, there are many challenges with mergers and acquisitions. IT can be atrocious. I've worked with plenty of companies, if they're small, the parent company comes in, rips out the entire thing, and puts a new thing. How's OpenStack, is that an enabler? Do you see it as a marked improvement? Any findings that you've got so far? >> Well I think with OpenStack, it is very flexible because we're using it as the Middleware for the whole platform, and so we've got different storage vendors, we can just substitute the end and then go to the OpenStack APIs, that programmatically control everything. So, it's really useful for us, so if we ever wanted to essentially use a new storage vendor then we don't have to rewrite all the self-service orchestration our developers are using and interrupt them, so that's really, that's key for us and our business. >> It's interesting you use the word middleware. I haven't heard that word used in terms of OpenStack, but you mean the layer, literally the layer, between storage networking the raw infrastructure, and the app on top. >> Yeah, so what we're really doing, we've created self-service template that our development teams use, and we then want multiple different ways for teams to create virtual machines and basically go the APIs directly, so what we've done is we've created a layer using Felt Works School, and where development teams fill in self-Service yamafells with all the details that it needs and then they can send them for structure that way, so we're simplifying it and making it user-friendly for them so that when they're onboarding an application, they don't actually need to come to the infrastructure team. They can basically self-serve against OpenStack, so I think that's giving them that EWS or Google Cloud or Azure-like ability within the private cloud, and we've had to really change the way our business is set-up to actually operate that, so generally what we've done is we set up different teams where they're more T-shaped teams, so you, in a T-shape team, you have a network engineer, you have a storage guy, you have some automation engineers, someone maybe from a development background, and what we really did with it, when we're building the pilot process, we tried to encapsulate all those different scales within the one team and set them up as a core team that would then go and build the infrastructure using best practices from each discipline. >> So a T-shaped in the sense that, the team is still cross-functional, what's the 'T' of the T-shape. >> So, the debt of the T is really the deep-dive expertise, so you might have a network engineer who has a deep-dive knowledge in that, but what we're trying to do is expand the teams breadth, so the breadth is the T is really the other disciplines that they are learning as part of that team. >> And congrats on the award again. >> Steve: Thank you. >> As they talked about the award, some of the description of why you got the award, they did mention, the words dev-ops and CICDs. You talked a little bit about an order structure and changing your org, and processes to do that. Now do you call that T-shaped, is that a dev-ops team for you, or how do you all look at it? >> We don't really like to use dev-ops team because it is kind of a- >> That was a trick question. >> Yeah, a leading question, so it was really, a. What we try to do is have cross-functional teams so really dev-ops for us, what it means, is more collaboration between those teams. We've still got teams at the moment within our business that are looking after the heritage legacy stacks at the moment, so what we'll need to do going forward in our business is bring those teams into the fold cause we've really had, I mean, essentially what we're doing at the moment, it's, like, gotten our bimodal, where you essential have more to, we're beltless. We need to take that to the next level and basically bring the people that have been looking after the other parts of the business because you need to maintain them while we're doing this new private-cloud implementation, along on that journey, so we're running training sessions now for our network engineers, teaching them mansible skill in the map, so it's really exciting time, just bringing on that journey. >> I actually think that's fascinating, because there's been a lot of talk about bimodal, type one versus type two and the word from the community and from the end users' raids, that's not sustainable. So, what you're saying is is indeed you can organize that way, but you've got to bring the old teams- >> Yeah, I think you can put names on anything, but generally that's what you do, you stand up, we stood up a brand new Greenfield implementation. You needed to people to go over to that, and act in a different way because OpenStack, it doesn't make sense having different styles, looking after different components of it, because OpenStack centralizes that into middleware, so it's actually quite difficult to chop that up into different styles. If you're going to do it, you couldn't have someone just looking after sender for instance because it's so incorporated with the rest of the stack. So really what we're doing is we're exposing that API layer to the developers and allowing them to self-service against it, and then we look after the core team, the maintenance of it, so we've done this with the team. Eight people looking after the core platform, and then we've got multiple different teams that went out and they helped the developers onboard many applications onto the platform by teaching them the self-service workflows and how to fill out all the yama files, and then if there's any feedback from them, we use a continuous improvement model to try and get them to improve the platform continuously. So, it's a continuum process and it's gets better and better each day, and hopefully we're going to speed up the amount of deployment that we can do and speed up take to market for it. >> Nice. So Steve, we've very much appropriated, you know, your organization sharing with our community. You're very active, obviously, in the super user. Talk about how you interact with your peers, you know, how that helped with your learnings, kind of that give and take that you have with the community. >> Yeah, so with the community, really, we come to these events, and we generally try to be as open as possible and just talk about our lessons learned. I think the OpenStack Summit's great for that because people are very honest. It's not like vendor-led. And met-ups, for instance, where they'll just tell you that everything's great and they're very self-deprecating in some of the sessions, but I think that honesty with the OpenSource community and the continual learning that you get from that is really key to actually looking at the problems, seeing 'OK, we're not 100% perfect' cause you never will be, and continuously improving as a community. So, I think having the belief then to drive with the OpenSource community is very key in that, and because that, I think, what you can do is if something in OpenStack isn't working the way that you want it to, you can contribute back and you can actually help make a difference and make it better. That's what we're trying to and there's projects such as Vitrush or Rickos and Alice's where at the moment you don't have a sense of plug-in, we use senses, so we begin to contribute back in write in a plug-in for that project so that we can use it, and then others basically benefit from that as well, so I think that's where OpenStack's very key. Your hear Edward Snowden's keynote, some controversial things in there, but at the same time, the premise was really if your putting your data somewhere else, like in public cloud, you don't actually know what's happening with, so that was something that resonated quite well because you have to look at what workload you want to run in public cloud and which ones you can run in private cloud, so I think it would really... We're just getting on to the next stages, and evolution and that journey where we will be looking at what workloads we place where, and I think that is where tubes like Cooper Nessus are really thriving, because they can place workloads wherever you want, and that's the popularity is so high. >> I'm wondering if you can speak a little bit to your company's corporate culture that allows, you know, this movement. I think, you know, information's open, eventually the house always wins on these bets, alright, with so much information available. >> Yeah, so, I think for us, the way that we've been able to do this is we've had sponsorship from CT level and Director level down, and it's very hard when you're doing a grassroots movement of just engineers trying to do this from the ground up. You really have to have a company that believes in this philosophy and wants to take it forward. And for us, what we really wanted to was just create a platform that allowed our developers to innovate on it, and just basically make the best tubes possible for our customers. >> So you're a longtime OpenStack user. We're now here in Boston, you know, Summits every six months. Anything in particular about the mood of people, the operators here, kind of how you would like to see both, you know, we've talked about Cooper and Eddie's, you've talked about different modules that you might want to see, you know, some activity in, or, just how you see in the future, path of OpenStack, how would you like the community and the project to grow? >> Well, I think there is a lot of presentations on stand-alone apps in OpenStack, so you have center stand-alone for box storage, you have ironic stand-alone. We use some of those projects to actually build it out, so I think module-bar rising it, and allowing it to be used, you might not want to install all of OpenStack, but why can't you install sender for instance, to control box storage, and so I think that's really the future of it. People could take all of it, or they could take different components of it, and I think that's what we're seeing in the community. People want to be able to install sender to help manage it, and maybe not install neutron or keystone alongside it, so I think that's really where OpenStack is going. It will be a modular metal service framework that makes it up, and you can install the best that you want in the project that you want. We've also seen a consolidation of projects, that the results of talk are in that eventually making projects simpler and removing features. I think when we originally had OpenStack, we just tried to throw every feature possible in, and then you seen a sprawl of projects, and then that's not maintainable. I think what we're getting down to is just the key projects that then use going forward, So I think you see the consolidation and then stand-alone instances that you can kind of plug-in the edges. >> So, Steve, let me speak a little bit about your business. I have to think there's few companies, you know, at least definitely fewer industries, that, deal with the rate of change and the uncertainty in the world, you know, more than really gambling in everything, that happens there. Anything changing in kind of the relationship of IT to the business? How does OpenStack help you respond to a very dynamic environment. >> Yeah, so, I think the key thing for us, is if one of our competitors has a feature, and we can't compete with that feature, we just will loose our customers to that competitor. So really being able to change and use OpenStack to change the platform and get new products out to market as quickly as possible is very key for us. Generally OpenStack is helping is we want an active, active data center We have a 24/7 business. We really need to have that uptake. If we are down, any sporting event, our customers will go somewhere else to place bets. So that's really key. And, for us, we've used OpenStack across two data centers, and built that out, and what we're looking to do is scale that out horizontally. So, for instance, when we've got new applications coming up onboard, we can just scale out new ratchets in openstack, we use ironic. We're completely controlling the whole data center programmatically, and that allows us the ability to scale up the infrastructure to meet the demands so that people are not waiting on tickets, or not having the internal IT processes that are handling most of our firms, so that's really where OpenStack is allowing us to evolve is that flexibility in having a private cloud just like you would a public cloud with VWS, but we've got that in-house. So I think we're quite lucky, and I keep telling the garages that are working on this, this is a once in a lifetime project, and I don't think they'll really believe me until they get their next job, so I think they're being quite spoiled in this as well. >> Steve Armstrong, really appreciate you joining us again on the program, and once again congratulations at Paddy Power Betfair and the whole team, and John and I will be back with more coverage here from the OpenStack Summit 2017 in Boston, Massachusetts You're watching the Cube.
