live from Las Vegas Nevada it's the kue covering knowledge 15 brought to you by service now welcome back to knowledge 15 everybody I'm Dave vellante and we're here this is the cube and we've been unpacking the experience that is service now knowledge knowledge 15 with this our third knowledge we did 13 14 and now 15 we're very excited to be here Nicole Tate and van Tran are here the two consultants in the IT service management space happen to be focused on health care right now but they got a lot of experience couple IT practitioners folks welcome to the cube it's great to see you so to call uh let me start with you so your first knowledge or you've been to a couple knowledge shows her so I started back in New Orleans with such okay no it's true yeah all right right so wow you've seen the transformation of knowledge along with the evolution of service now when you what do you think about this one so I'm amazed you know the first knowledge i attended I remember being overwhelmed I hadn't even implemented my first phase and so I'm sitting in these sessions and I'm just like wow these people are rockstars look at all these cool things that they're doing and I came back very energized very revived and started on my own journey after that and now I'm seeing some of these same people coming up and being their own rock stars and kind of watching the conference grow it's really impressive so if you go back van you know a few years ago so the IT and still in many organizations is of the whipping child of the organization but we've really seen a transformation in that role for particularly the clients that are the customers that are here maybe you could talk about that in your own experience yeah I started with service now back probably in 2007 and so back then it was something that was shown as something is an easy platform that you can easily configure and through the growth of service now you know it's become more complicated and clients have had more requirements so then we've seen more dedicated roles to this profession and a lot of resources are needed to be successful in the complication that we have today especially in the health care industry so it's it's it's going getting more complicated and they'll be need to be more people involved to make it successful so you both are relatively new to healthcare right it's turn over the last 12 months or so or less casing the call but you've got a lot of experience you're consulting with different organizations you know around and what's different about health care Nicole what are your first impressions so I think health care has been one of these things that's very complicated and rightfully so it's it's people's health you know it's their lives but with recent legislation and recent things that are coming down health care is being forced to be more of a product more of a service right and as the cost per patient Rises and you're getting less back from insurance right you have to get creative and there's going to have to be some disruption in this industry I'm and I see service now as a platform that will be able to streamline a lot of these complex processes put some automation behind it and really reduce some costs so you think it'll reduce our bills I hope so so van let's talk about your experiences with with service now he said started in 2007 did I hear right that's when I first he's dead okay how did that all come about it's it's still fairly new at that time so when when our our service desk was replacing a tool it was just something that you brought in and then I worked at the helpdesk at that time so I was in charge of just sort of configured to replace our old tool at that time and so and since then I've just kind of did a little fudging here and there and but as I went through my career I've had more dedicated part in service now and so now I'm a full-time developer and so I'm just doing it a lot lot more now and Nicole you were saying off-camera that your experience is you were one of the first to go beyond IT maybe you could tell us about that yeah so and when I came to the New Orleans conference I was just worried about it's an IT tool and as I was sitting there listening to some of the sessions and some of the use cases I thought you know there's there's something unique here we could we can take this really far so I came back and I did a really aggressive roadmap and I showed my boss and he says you're trying to do everything in six months and I said fine give me 12 and he says okay good luck whatever go do whatever you need to do and I met with HR facilities accounts payable engineering and then we rolled out 15 business apps in 18 months vicious very it was really nice because we had everybody using the same platform and once you get everybody using the same platform then you can automate your enterprise processes so this stuff that you know everybody has a piece of that before you have to take outside of a workflow you'd have to go door knocking and say hey it's your turn to do your part now we just you know hit the now button right it just goes everybody just got an automated task to do their keys they would do that these you go to the next piece we were able to bring a lot of products to market very fast for that house we're breaking ice new ground how did you go about succeeding there just take us through kind of the steps that he took yeah um initially HR came to me and says you know we do what you do and I send our IT you don't do what we do and he says no absolutely we have these we have incidents and she do no you don't you know you ok let's now really have a conversation and he's any starts to walk me through he says yeah you know you didn't get paid what would you think that was that was and I'm like oh it's a really big incident and he said yeah exactly so I need something that I can have as a portal for employees to come through and get services from HR and I was like that makes a lot of sense you know let's go ahead and do this so we did a proof of concept where we got everybody in the room and did an 8-hour jam session and we came out of that with actually a really good app it took three weeks to roll it out because we had to do change management and some training to the field but time to market it was literally four weeks and we had an enterprise HR you know case automation piece to it so it's really cool what was it ok but there was no app creator back then right now so how did that all work so it was me i just right clicked and created an app into the table and prayed that i did it right youryour coder by background I'm not I'm definitely from the business side of the house so I did the the proof of concept and then I had a developer come in and do some of the security and some of the more complex logic that was needed to support something like HR but there's a lot of sensitive sensitivity to data and things like that van you're a you a developer by right background or no I come the service that side so that's why what your service now developer and now my service not developer so you guys are the low coders or no coders as they say how did you get into being a developer service now well starting at the service desk you know at that time I just took calls and wrote up incidents and I moved into the application space and I still had a hand in service now and I did a little bit more coding in my application role and then in my consulting role then that's when I start to do more coding and stuff like that and so then so that's how I got in that space and I like coding yeah people wouldn't have to call me as much as when I wrecked at the service desk i was able to concentrate more and not be pulled in two different directions and as a developer i can just focus on what i'm working on in front of my screen at that time ok so I'm envisioning you know code right as code I see our developers they got code all the place and understand it maybe it's HTML maybe it's Python whatever it is so what's it like to be a service now developer it's not so much different from that it's just you have to know that there's some proprietary functions within the ServiceNow system but it's mostly javascript-based and there's some jelly and then you can do some HTML on the CMS front too but the server has a lot of tools that sort of make it a little bit easier for people who don't code very much as one of those who do code very much and then it because gives them short cousin they don't have to write everything themselves so today's developer in service now can to have the options to make it really complex if they need to or they can use the out of box tools to help them configure their application in a more efficient matter it helps with better practice or if you don't have a computer science background I have a computer science okay so that helped it does it does how hey okay so you've taken courses and you understand logic and yes yeah that definitely does have some code maybe not commercially but yeah I've been insane Nicole did you have a computer science background I don't have an MBA I'm straight up business now okay and you consider yourself now a service now developer or no you just sort of broke the ice so I'm definitely capable of putting together you know as it you know part of my role is being a champion for the organization identifying solution opportunities I can put together a POC or proof of concept within the tool and show people what they could do what life could be like if they use service now and then when you actually want to roll something out to production and have security and some automated business rules and things like that you know I'll partner with van and say help me this is the things that we want to go ahead and do here's some of the additional harder requirements that we need to solve here but yeah I'm capable of going in and doing stuff to it but the job of pieces and things like that I let the experts handle that so what makes a good developer and how does that compare to what makes a good service now developer there's got to be similarities or their differences there are slight differences what makes a good service now developers that you're aware of the best practice and you use the proprietary functions within the system some of the stuff comes with out of box and and depending on what your requirements are maybe you don't want to skirt around that you want to use that because you know you when things change on the service and Alfre you don't want your stuff to break so a good service now developer will take into account the existing out of box functionality things that you can figure and then you would code and help support that so that when you do changes and upgrades to that then your stuff wouldn't break so it's just about being conscious about what's best practice supporting the outer box functions when it's appropriate and and versus a regular developer well you wouldn't you might not have a system that you're working with you're just creating your own application so that's the general difference which you know you must be started about something else what you've seen at the very excited about your nieces and yeah so talk about what you want you've seen that's got you it's very it's very very nice and I see there has a presence that's a good idea about having a chat and the ability to do that and and I what I really like is the more support behind the mobil feature because in today it's we have the mobile feature but it but what we need may not it may not be fully supported yet but i see in geneva they're making a big push into the mobile app space and then I think that's when mobile apps going to start taking off for service now when we get to Geneva the real-time peace with angular yes that definitely supply yes okay all right a call so let's talk about n van both of you guys have one point to weigh in on this so let's take a hypothetical situation in healthcare you guys get relatively new to healthcare so you come up with a fresh perspective describe a typical healthcare situation may be using a variety of tools and a lot of stovepipes a lot of inefficiencies describe that situation and how you get from there to where you want to be and what is that state and how do you get there so one of the things that you know we're focusing on right now is standardized processes so in IT we're battling kind of the firefighting or the being a very reactive so if we can get everybody to fall into place with a standard process that allow us to have a very similar experience from the hospital with IT so if a doctor calls in they'll they'll have the very similar experience each and every time as opposed to it being somewhat varied or they have their their hook up their IT hook up if you will right the other kind of interesting piece is we do a lot of rounding so we go to the hospital and we try to find out what's better and in doing that I noticed that we have a lot of paper sheets where we file you know if a piece of equipments broken or anything you'd help with something at the hospital they're actually filling out a piece of paper it's a form for that there's a form he's a paper form you know there's an app for that will and help you there's a fourth with us it's a foreigner or stack of paper I'm in you know our field service your I'm printed if you want that's right good scan it yeah um so our field services reps then go through every morning and they collect these pieces of paper and then they dispatch out some additional people to go fix these things or replace the items I'm you know what I'd like to see is you know a mobile device there and it's just you know right there for them to be able to do that I think those are some prime opportunities that are kind of the low-hanging fruit for us from an IT perspective but I also think that there's some great things that we could do outside of IT on this platform you know supply chain managing some of the you know needle sticks you know if you take a use case like that it's a huge challenge in healthcare today and when you have a practitioner who sticks themselves with the needle they have to go and fill out a form they have to go to occupational health they have to go and do all of these different things there's a set process behind that um you know it'd be nice for them to be able to log it from their mobile device that they had this issue they would get some sort of task or some sort of notification this is hey now your next step in this process is to go do this it gets checked off that way and you can confirm that that practitioner followed the appropriate steps and then what really excites me is the opportunity to do analysis behind that so is it the the nurse who's working the 18-hour shift that always gets the needle sticks and those are higher is that the night shift is it this specific specific area that's having an issue you can start compiling some of that data and doing a lot of the reporting out of service now on how could we how could we be better I would think it's awfully challenging to do some of that analysis if it's on spreadsheets and paper and things like that now doctors aren't known for being the most aggressive users of technology at least historically uh maybe that's unfair has that changed I think I disagree with that because I think you're seeing significant significant advances in health care today and I think they're looking for technology you know I ran into a physician the other day and he's been working at the hospital for 50-plus years and he's in he says oh you're from IT and I said I am and he says when are we gonna get better technology and I thought that was really interesting because I think it shows that they're really wanting more from us he's on that's why I'm here I'm here to help so van what are some of the applications that you're working on developing or getting adopted what kind of just about everything anything like out of box like incident helping change cmdb Service Catalog discovery and then most recently I I developed and get me and my team developed a social media management app and so you know I can fix you can help control Twitter feeds and stuff like that so and then there's we also have custom apps that that might sort of support an existing medical system and so we review the process for that and then we custom-built out that request system so a request for an enhancement might come in and there'd be a workflow behind that but it's not an incident a change or a Service Catalog requests doctors tweet my corporate corporate tweets perfectly i guess it could be so what is the social media management app to that's interesting basically it would it would prevent accidental inappropriate treats or controversial treats for the organization and you would store the credentials in service now and so none of your social media team but actually need to know the credentials and so you give them the ability to post to the social media but they would have to go through service now they have to submit a suggestion for a post and it would go through a workflow and a review and there would be some of that I would have the final say and the final edit on that post and they can polish it up and make it look good and then it would say post it now and then it would go out from service now and actually post it on the twitter feed and this way you can prevent you know if their people are leaving and coming you don't have to keep changing the password you can just give a masses to service now you can just take it away so it is also much secure and it prevents people from accidentally posting stuff in sizing us that's a real concern in today's industry about accidentally posting such does that work so i have my service now credentials yeah and then i have access it's it's a access controls to this app yeah you have you would get access to service now you'd open up a record producer and you'd submit a suggestion for a post so let's say I worked in department XYZ and I say you know our company should really talk about this out there and so I would submit this post suggestion it would go through a workflow behind the scenes and it would get reviewed and if they feel that you know what we really should be talking about this then they'll review it no maybe work with a couple of people to polish it up and then they'll post it and the person who suggested it doesn't need to know the credentials but they got their post out there and so that's the power of service now you don't have to give the credential salad so is that is that how it works is pretty pretty much anybody can make a suggestion anyone can make a sort of a user-generated content I here within the organization yeah you'd get everyone to participate maybe it's just not the social media team anymore you get feedback from the entire organ asian about what they feel should be out there that's relevant to their area and maybe you didn't know that that should be something you're talking about and so you'd get that feedback you'd get to review it and maybe you don't want to post it out or maybe you do and if you do you can get some work notes and discussions on the suggestive post and when you're ready you can post it up through service now to the app now would you for instance take that app and put it in in the store in theory would you do that yeah it would be on share I mean for others too yeah yeah okay have you done that or are you planning on doing that trying to do that yeah you see the charge for it no no okay that's cool great i love free apps but I mean a lot of people want to put stuff in the store so they can you know make money right your motivation is the major Shara sharing knowledge and just help people I mean it's it's it's not a complicated program or anything like that but it's it done okay so what why recreated yeah now what's the general philosophy with sort of developing applications now that the stores here is this whole ecosystem make or buy builder by that's the what's the philosophy or I guess it depends on whether you have a big team if you have a team of 20 X developer's then you could build it yourself to exactly to your specifications and if your team is small and you're relatively small company maybe it's worth it you just buy the app there's also an advantage to making it because then you can support it you know exactly what's behind it I think you know people are going to download off of share and like put applications on the platform they need to thoroughly understand how that application was built and so that they can understand all the business rules and the logic that comes in from a management perspective I think that's really really important to vet out how those apps are been configured we could talk about services so a lot of large service organizations here systems integrators folks that are you know pretty astute on best practice within service now an IT Service Management or in your experiences past experience cars experience are you using service providers how are you using them what would you recommend in that regards a lot of people like oh wow that's a lot of money but we're talking about the family jewels here too so you have to be careful so what would you recommend there and what's your experience been so when I was at the telecommunications organization we used a lot of different partners and in what we found is that each partner kind of brings a different strengths and that really allowed us to leverage you know one partner who's really nailed asset management for example that's one that we want to partner with asset management but maybe not on HR case management another partner could be really good at you know governance risk and compliance and bring a really strong you know strong suite there that's what we want to partner with I'm kind of finding a little bit of a shift now um you know I prefer to use service now professional services you know it's the one back to Pat one throat to choke kind of thing and but they also you know are able to tap into a huge consulting you know practice so if I'm leading an implementation in healthcare I can partner with them and say I want people that have health care experience and when I was at telecommunications I said hey I need somebody that has telecommunications experience they brought their a-game to the telecommunication space so it's really important because I think while everybody does incident management there are specific use cases for these different industries and things that are the I gotchas and they've been through those things and they can bring that knowledge and I think that that's worth you know the money that they charge is bringing the blog's up this health care provider and they did it this way and this is what they found don't do that you know we've gotten a lot of help on our recent project in that area just don't do this do it this way you know specific to our our guidelines writing for our industry we're running out of time you have a van a couple couple final questions man from your perspective coming from help desk now throw them in the application development role what's the one action item you would give you know to your peers what should they be focused on to be successful as a developer I think they would need to focus more on the business and be more you know listening and gathering requirements because i think you know there might be like a developer role and that business systems analyst role and not that that's not important but it would help the developer if they had a general understanding of the business and the flow of that so I think if they could extend just beyond being a developer fully if they could understand the business in the process that would definitely help them question and think about whether what they're building even though it's based off the requirements is really the best way to do it because they have the understanding of the business process to so to call you're nodding profusely okay look van took that one what's the piece of advice you would give your your peers and be your own internal sales rep so as we're asking the development community to fill in that gap of you know the business analyst and understanding the business and coming up with creative solutions you know from a solution owner a platform owner perspective it's be the champion you know HR is not going to know the capabilities of the platform unless you're out in front of them coming up with these solutions and showing the capabilities behind it so you know be the champion because it can only benefit your organization for everybody to be using the same technology you know it's interesting IT people traditionally you wouldn't consider them the most sales oriented our marketing oriented people in the planet but you walk around this conference and and you call it use it to our champion it's a good word but internal champion internal sales people you see a lot more that it events like this generally but specifically knowledge and so that's a skill set that's new IT isn't it it's good yeah and I think you know the platform allows that right we're not spending a lot of time coding and you know being very complicated our role is really making their processes less complicated so that we can automate in the tool faster right so if I can push back on the business and say hey why are you doing it that way this is a better way to do it I'm also simplifying our lives from a development perspective and I can go to market quicker as opposed to having to build all this custom functionality to support some crazy business requirement right so I think that's why you see a lot more champions at this conference because that's the skill set that's really important to make sure you don't mess up your platform all right we'll leave it there Nicole van thanks very much thank you >>Hey, everyone. Welcome to the cubes coverage of women in data science, 2022. I'm Lisa Martin. And I'm here with one of the key featured keynotes for this year is with events. So the Aragon, the professor and department of human centered design and engineering at the university of Washington Cecilia, it's a pleasure to have you on the cube. >>Thank you so much, Lisa Lisa, it's a pleasure to be here as well. >>You got an amazing background that I want to share with the audience. You are a professor, you are a data scientist, an aerobatic pilot, and an author with expertise in human centered, data science, visual analytics, aviation safety, and analysis of extremely large and complex data sets. That's quite the background. >>Well, thank you so much. It's it's all very interesting and fun. So, >>And as a professor, you study how people make sense of vast data sets, including a combination of computer science and art, which I love. And as an author, you write about interesting things. You write about how to overcome fear, which is something that everybody can benefit from and how to expand your life until it becomes amazing. I need to take a page out of your book. You were also honored by president Obama a few years back. My goodness. >>Thank you so much. Yes. I I've had quite a journey to come here, but I feel really fortunate to be here today. >>Talk about that journey. I'd love to understand if you were always interested in stem, if it was something that you got into later, I know that you are the co-founder of Latinas in computing, a passionate advocate for girls and women in stem. Were you always interested in stem or was it something that you got into in a kind of a non-linear path? >>I was always interested in it when I was a young girl. I grew up in a small Midwestern town and my parents are both immigrants and I was one of the few Latinas in a mostly white community. And I was, um, I loved math, but I also wanted to be an astronaut. And I remember I, when we were asked, I think it was in second grade. What would you like to be when you grow up? I said, oh, I want to be an astronaut. And my teacher said, oh, you can't do that. You're a girl pick something else. And um, so I picked math and she was like, okay. >>Um, so I always wanted to, well, maybe it would be better to say I never really quite lost my love of being up in the air and potentially space. But, um, but I ended up working in math and science and, um, I, I loved it because one of the great advantages of math is that it's kind of like a magic trick for young people, especially if you're a girl or if you are from an underrepresented group, because if you get the answers right on a math test, no one can mark you wrong. It doesn't matter what the color of your skin is or what your gender is. Math is powerful that way. And I will say there's nothing like standing in a room in front of a room of people who think little of you and you silence them with your love with numbers. >>I love that. I never thought about math as power before, but it clearly is. But also, you know, and, and I wish we had more time because I would love to get into how you overcame that fear. And you write books about that, but being told you can't be an astronaut. You're a girl and maybe laughing at you because you liked Matt. How did you overcome that? And so nevermind I'm doing it anyway. >>Well, that's a, it's a, okay. The short answer is I had incredible imposter syndrome. I didn't believe that I was smart enough to get a PhD in math and computer science. But what enabled me to do that was becoming a pilot and I B I learned how to fly small airplanes. I learned how to fly them upside down and pointing straight at the ground. And I know this might sound kind of extreme. So this is not what I recommend to everybody. But if you are brought up in a way where everybody thinks little of you, one of the best things you can possibly do is take on a challenge. That's scary. I was afraid of everything, but by learning to fly and especially learning to fly loops and rolls, it gave me confidence to do everything else because I thought I appointed the airplane at the ground at 250 miles an hour and waited, why am I afraid to get a PhD in computer science? >>Wow. How empowering is that? >>Yeah, it really was. So that's really how I overcame the fear. And I will say that, you know, I encountered situations getting my PhD in computer science where I didn't believe that I was good enough to finish the degree. I didn't believe that I was smart enough. And what I've learned later on is that was just my own emotional, you know, residue from my childhood and from people telling me that they, you know, that they, that I couldn't achieve >>As I look what, look what you've achieved so far. It's amazing. And we're going to be talking about some of the books that you've written, but I want to get into data science and AI and get your thoughts on this. Why is it necessary to think about human issues and data science >>And what are your thoughts there? So there's been a lot of work in data science recently looking at societal impacts. And if you just address data science as a purely technical field, and you don't think about unintended consequences, you can end up with tremendous injustices and societal harms and harms to individuals. And I think any of us who has dealt with an inflexible algorithm, even if you just call up, you know, customer service and you get told, press five for this press four for that. And you say, well, I don't fit into any of those categories, you know, or have the system hang up on you after an hour. I think you'll understand that any type of algorithmic approach, especially on very large data sets has the risk of impacting people, particularly from low income or marginalized groups, but really any of us can be impacted in a negative way. >>And so, as a developer of algorithms that work over very large data sets, I've always found it really important to consider the humans on the other end of the algorithm. And that's why I believe that all data science is truly human centered or should be human centered, should be human centered and also involves both technical issues as well as social issues. Absolutely correct. So one example is that, um, many of us who started working in data science, including I have to admit me when I started out assume that data is unbiased. It's scrubbed of human influence. It is pure in some ways, however, that's really not true as I've started working with datasets. And this is generally known in the field that data sets are touched by humans everywhere. As a matter of fact, in our, in the recent book that we're, that we're coming out with human centered data science, we talk about five important points where humans touch data, no matter how scrubbed of human influence it's support it's supposed to be. >>Um, so the first one is discovery. So when a human encounters, a data set and starts to use it, it's a human decision. And then there's capture, which is the process of searching for a data set. So any data that has to be selected and chosen by an individual, um, then once that data set is brought in there's curation, a human will have to select various data sets. They'll have to decide what is, what is the proper set to use. And they'll be making judgements on this the time. And perhaps one of the most important ways the data is changed and touched by humans is what we call the design of data. And what that means is whenever you bring in a data set, you have to categorize it. No, for example, let's suppose you are, um, a geologist and you are classifying soil data. >>Well, you don't just take whatever the description of the soil data is. You actually may put it into a previously established taxonomy and you're making human judgments on that. So even though you think, oh, geology data, that's just rocks. You know, that's soil. It has nothing to do with people, but it really does. Um, and finally, uh, people will label the data that they have. And this is especially critical when humans are making subjective judgments, such as what race is the person in this dataset. And they may judge it based on looking at the individual skin color. They may try to apply an algorithm to it, but you know what? We all have very different skin colors, categorizing us into race boxes, really diminishes us and makes us less than we truly are. So it's very important to realize that humans touch the data. We interpret the data. It is not scrubbed of bias. And when we make algorithmic decisions, even the very fact of having an algorithm that makes a judgment say on whether a prisoner's likely to offend again, the judge just by having an algorithm, even if the algorithm makes a recommended statement, they are impacted by that algorithms recommendation. And that has obviously an impact on that human's life. So we consider all of this. >>So you just get given five solid reasons why data science and AI are inevitably human centric should be, but in the past, what's led to the separation between data science and humans. >>Well, I think a lot of it simply has to do with incorrect mental models. So many of us grew up thinking that, oh, humans have biases, but computers don't. And so if we just take decision-making out of people's hands and put it into the hands of an algorithm, we will be having less biased results. However, recent work in the field of data science and artificial intelligence has shown that that's simply not true that algorithmic algorithms reinforce human biases. They amplify them. So algorithmic biases can be much worse than human biases and can greater impact. >>So how do we pull ethics into all of this data science and AI and that ethical component, which seems to be that it needs to be foundational. >>It absolutely has to be foundational. And this is why we believe. And what we teach at the university of Washington in our data science courses is that ethical and human centered approaches and ideas have to be brought in at the very beginning of the algorithm. It's not something you slap on at the end or say, well, I'll wait for the ethicists to weigh in on this. Now we are all human. We can all make human decisions. We can all think about the unintended consequences of our algorithms as we develop them. And we should do that at the very beginning. And all algorithm designers really need to spend some time thinking about the impact that their algorithm may have. >>Right. Do you, do you find that people are still in need of convincing of that or is it generally moving in that direction of understanding? We need to bring ethics in from the beginning, >>It's moving in that direction, but there are still people who haven't modified their mental models yet. So we're working on it. And we hope that with the publication of our book, that it will be used as a supplemental textbook in many data science courses that are focused exclusively on the algorithms and that they can open up the idea that considering the human centered approaches at the beginning of learning about algorithms and data science and the mathematical and statistical techniques, that the next generation of data scientists and artificial intelligence developers will be able to mitigate some of the potentially harmful effects. And we're very excited about this. This is why I'm a professor, because I want to teach the next generation of data scientists and artificial intelligence experts, how to make sure that their work really achieves what they intended it to, which is to make the world a better place, not a worse place, but to enable humans to do better and to mitigate biases and really to lead us into this century in a positive way. >>So the book, human centered data science, you can see it there over Sicily, his right shoulder. When does this come out and how can folks get a copy of it? >>So it came out March 1st and it's available in bookstores everywhere. It was published by MIT press, and you can go online or you can go to your local independent bookstore, or you can order it from your university bookstore as well. >>Excellent. Got to, got to get a copy of, get my hands on that. Got cut and get a copy and dig into that. Cause it sounds so interesting, but also so thoughtful and, um, clear in the way that you described that. And also all the opportunities that, that AI data science and humans are gonna unlock for the world and humans and jobs and, and great things like that. So I'm sure there's lots of great information there. Last question I mentioned, you are keynoting at this year's conference. Talk to me about like the top three takeaways that the audience is going to get from your keynote. >>So I'm very excited to have been invited to wins this year, which of course is a wonderful conference to support women in data science. And I've been a big fan of the conference since it was first developed here, uh, here at Stanford. Um, the three, the three top takeaways I would say is to really consider the data. Science can be rigorous and mathematical and human centered and ethical. It's not a trade-off, it's both at the same time. And that's really the, the number one that, that I'm hoping to keynote will bring to, to the entire audience. And secondly, I hope that it will encourage women or people who've been told that maybe you're not a science person or this isn't for you, or you're not good at math. I hope it will encourage them to disbelieve those views. And to realize that if you, as a member of any type of unread, underrepresented group have ever felt, oh, I'm not good enough for this. >>I'm not smart enough. It's not for me that you will reconsider because I firmly believe that everyone can be good at math. And it's a matter of having the information presented to you in a way that honors your, the background you had. So when I started out my, my high school didn't have AP classes and I needed to learn in a somewhat different way than other people around me. And it's really, it's really something. That's what I tell young people today is if you are struggling in a class, don't think it's because you're not good enough. It might just be that the teacher is not presenting it in a way that is best for someone with your particular background. So it doesn't mean they're a bad teacher. It doesn't mean you're unintelligent. It just means the, maybe you need to find someone else that can explain it to you in a simple and clear way, or maybe you need to get some scaffolding that is Tate, learn extra, take extra classes that will help you. Not necessarily remedial classes. I believe very strongly as a teacher in giving students very challenging classes, but then giving them the scaffolding so that they can learn that difficult material. And I have longer stories on that, but I think I've already talked a bit too long. >>I love that. The scaffolding, I th I think the, the one, one of the high level takeaways that we're all going to get from your keynote is inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your path to stem, how you got here, why humans, data science and AI are, have to be foundationally human centered, looking forward to the keynote. Eugene's Great to see you. >>Thanks for having me. So >>So talk to your audience a little bit about a PTO. What is it that you guys do? Help them understand that >>absolutely. Abdo provides leading tools for technology business management. We help our customers understand their technology costs where they're spending money where they're not spending money and how they can optimize those and help translate that into the language of whether you're a business person or finance person or working directly and technology department. You all can come together and understand what your technology costs are and where they're headed in the future. And then we also provide Cem tools for you to dive deeper into your cloud specific cost. For example, >>speaking of Cloud Cross, one of the things that is happening that we all know is that cloud spend has never been mawr important because of all the changes the surgeon SAS Applications Enterprise Cloud with everybody shifting Thio work from home Talk to me about some of the trends that you're seeing. >>Yeah, it's really interesting to see right. It's It's an interesting time. And as we see more and more folks come online working from home consuming digital products, we're seeing the demand really grow for well cloud services and the services that our customers consumed to provide that digital content. However, at the same time those customers are being asked to do more with less less. Resource is less. Spending on resource is providing mawr information, more data, more content. So it's in that world that we look to help our customers as much as possible achieve those goals. How do I make sure that my dollar goes as far as possible on my infrastructure? Spend with AWS? I get the tremendous benefit of elasticity, lead and flexibility with my cloud resource is from AWS, and how do I make sure that I'm using my dollar on the right set of resource is that my teams are looking at the right set of products or discount models that can allow them to save more money as they consume more of those services. It'll be just provide some really great opportunities to do just that. We're the ones who look to help you achieve that with AWS. >>So customers that air as to be, you know, do more with less, but also companies that need more technical capabilities. How does Abdul >>help that trade >>off that balance? >>Yeah, it's definitely a balanced. It's one that we look to help folks with even folks that aren't our customers, necessarily, right. We're one of the founding members of the Thin Ops Foundation. We provide our own content as well, where you can simply consume and understand. What is it that you're gonna get from eight of us in terms of your costs and usage data? What are you going to see when you get your bill? How can you consume that more efficiently processed that information so that you can again make your dollar go further again? There's tremendous benefits with cloud, but that also means that you get a lot more data with the consumption that you have tens of thousands, millions of rows of data because you can actually spin up and spin down resource is, as you see fit means that you have more data to process and more data to consume. So it's imperative. It's really important that you understand how to look at that data, had a process it and then how to make decisions from that data. And that really boils down to the financial management practices, because you have to look at it as both a technologist and the financial lens that you have from the cost that are coming from those data. >>So let's impact that because as we talk about data is the new goal. That's oil it is. Organizations can harness it and extract insights quickly as possible. Make to your point decisions in real time but affect the business. And so many businesses the last nine months have had to pivot multiple times to get to. How do we survive this? How do we thrive during this? So how does that do you help customers be ableto leverage the power of cloud to get access to all that data, but also really manage their cloud financial financials? >>Yeah, we've got a few ways toe help you with that. We have tools like Cloud ability which provide provide the ability to dive into your data, get that process from AWS, and then we'll actually visualize that for U. S. So instead of you having to go into those gargantuan data files, you actually can get that right in front of you in the tool and share that with your internal stakeholders. So it's important that you share the information is not just about Lisa knowing what she spent on cloud cost, it's about the entirety organization knowing what each part is consuming and subsequently spending. The other bit of it is making sure you're not overspending. You mentioned it right? There's a lot more demand on cloud Resource is what that means that you mean to be really careful that you're not overspending. You're not over provisioned. Both in the resource is you use using a resource that might be too large for the application of workload. You're running or not, taking advantage of all the great commitment based products that AWS provides to you. Credibility seeks to help you do that, but we also have and are expanding on that suite of products because we view as more than just the infrastructure you have with eight of us. It's also the SAS products, the software the service that you are using to help run your cloud services. We give you the ability with credibility, SAS to look at that data as well and look at all the applications you used to run those services. >>So credibility and the credibility staff. I'm just curious as things have evolved so much the last, you know, a few months, as I mentioned, How is your conversation within a customer organization changing like Has your target audience changed for cloud ability? Are they now? Is it now at the C suite or you're target audience not going. We need to be able to justify leveraging this tool to optimize our spend all the way up to our CEO and our >>board. Yeah, you know, that's uninterested point. We're definitely seeing Mawr Eyes on Cloud spend as it becomes a larger proportion of your overall technology spending right after you. Asshole has been very used to having eyes on our products and our data at the C suite love. But that's because it was the overall technology spending. Now, as cloud becomes a bigger and bigger portion of that spend a SAS becomes a bigger and bigger portion of that spending worldwide technology spend is gonna approach $4 trillion and assassin and infrastructure the service of the fastest growing segments of that spend. So we get more of those eyeballs. Uh, we also get more of the well, Hey, Eugene, prove to me why it's worth it. Why should we move to the cloud? Why should we move our workloads to the cloud? Because we think we get it. We hear a lot about it, but show me hard dollars in hard data. Why is that valuable? Why is that important for us? And what is the guy that I'm going to realize from that? That's what we seek to dio. That's we do pretty well on. What we also look to do is to be able to drive that information down. Is the organisation's well. It's not just enough. Thio explain to the C suite why it's Ah, hi are y Overall. It's important to empower folks within the organization to actually achieve that All that's a very important part of it as well. So we really look at it that way. >>That's a great point that you make. It's not just about justifying the you know, these cloud cost management and optimization or C CMO tools. It's about empowering the individuals to be able to use them to extract that value. That's a great point that you brought up. So let's dig into the R o I a little bit more like How are you helping a W S customers contain their costs? And what are some of the r. A. Y figures that you're saying >>We're seeing great results from our customers? We do in primarily three ways. We talked about visibility just simply being able to see what you're spending on what your teams are consuming. The second is actually providing proactive recommendations for you. What can you do with reservations or savings plans in AWS? What's the optimal point at which you can commit and get a high r a y for the commitment you're making Tate of us for one or three years? What are the resource is you're running and which ones are over provision. Which ones are unattached or idle, were able to actually highlight that for you. The Third Way is actually providing proactive anomaly detection. We run our own algorithms and determine when and where we're seeing spend or usage that doesn't really fit your historical patterns. And we highlight those for you. Now it may be that you expected this, and this was something that you knew was coming. You're launching a new product in a new market. Or maybe you've got higher demand for your services because you're a media company and there's a lot of media being consumed recently, but we will still highlighted for you. We've been able to find many instances where you're actually unaware of that. Spend. That anomaly that we've detected is something that you could stop right at the source. >>So given this sort of urgency that we're all living in, how quickly, uh, from a tournament time frame, can you work with customers to show them proactively these air, all the areas in which you are overspending under spending? This is where you need to optimize. What's that? What's the customer looking for in terms of time frame to make that impact? >>Well, she asked customer, they probably say real time, right, right away. And we come pretty darn close to that. We do it throughout the month so historically, folks who are consuming infrastructure very usedto we know we're spending. We bought this server many years ago, were depreciating it, and we know exactly what we're spending for that month. But with the cloud, you're actually getting that bill in real time. You're getting your estimated charges every day, every hour, and we're right there with you looking at that data as it goes by. So that's what customers are really looking forward Now there's some things that you won't get right away, right? There's some things that come in, you know, in your monthly invoices or things that you'll see that we help you allocate and understand who's spending where. But by and large, we actually do this right at the time that you're seeing this data come through, and that's really important. The real time nature of it, the ability to look at your costs and usage and who is actually using it is critical to your success. Otherwise, things could run away pretty quickly. >>It is absolutely critical, and it's kind of one of those things. As consumers, we sort of had this on demand expectation for so long and now, with things changing so quickly and organizations having to make so many pivots and probably continue to do so. Being able to have that visibility that inside in real time, make decisions on it. It's critical because there's very likely a competitor, er, right in the rear view mirror that might be smaller and more agile and, you know, kind of willing toe and ready to come in and and kind of bulldozed down. So with that said how and as things continue to change, and I think we can expect that for a while longer as we approach the or 2021 how do you advise organizations think about cloud in the context of their overall technology spend? >>Yeah, that's a great question. The first is to think of it more than just a budget line item. It's more than just an entering your general ledger of spending this much money is really about driving the growth of your organization and making sure that you drive the optimal growth in the resource is and infrastructure and software that you consume in order to increase your own broke. The second is to actually plan for it. There's this sort of feeling that that folks get when I talk to that, they can't really plan for cloud spend, right. It's just gonna happen. What my organization you can consume is what they're going to consume. But that couldn't be further from the truth. You can plan for your cloud spend you can look at the demand for your resource is you can plan for different scenarios and what might happen in the future, as you put it. And you can actually look at that yourself. You can also look at tools like plan, ability, demand in the video suite. You could look at cloud ability itself to forecast that demand you can actually plan for. So don't be daunted by, Well, it's a lot of data. I'm not sure what's gonna happen. It's just gonna We're just gonna roll with it. A zit happens, right? You need to be able to plan for you need to be proactive with it. I mean, you understand what you might spend depending on what well, the economy does, what the world does and what your customers at the end of that, they do >>great advice that you can plan for it and you should plan for it and be proactive. I think all of us could use a little bit of that in our lives. Justin and I are joined by a couple of guests New to the Cube. We've got David Meister next to meet Global head of sales for Io Tahoe. Welcome. Eddie Edwards with a cool name. Global Data Service is director from Direct Energy. Welcome, Eddie. Thank you. Okay, So, David, I know we had somebody from Io Tahoe on yesterday, but I'd love for you to give her audience an overview of Io Tahoe, and then you gotta tell us what the name means. >>Okay. Well, day pie stir. Io Tahoe thinks it's wonderful event here in AWS and excited to be here. Uh, I, oh, Tahoe were located in downtown on Wall Street, New York on and I Oh, Tahoe. Well, there's a lot of different meanings, but mainly Tahoe for Data Lake Input output into the lake is how it was originally meant So But ah, little background on Io Tahoe way are 2014. We came out way started in stealth came out of stealth in 2017 with two signature clients. When you're going to hear from in a moment direct energy, the other one g e and we'll speak to those in just a moment I owe Tahoe takes a unique approach way have nine machine learning machine learning algorithms 14 future sets that interrogates the data. At the data level, we go past metadata, so solving that really difficult data challenge and I'm gonna let Eddie describe some of the use cases that were around data migration, P II discovery, and so over to you >>a little bit about direct energy. What, you where you're located, What you guys do and how data is absolutely critical to your business. Yeah, >>sure. So direct energy. Well, it's the largest residential energy supplier in the er us around 5000 employees. Loss of this is coming from acquisitions. So as you can imagine, we have a vast amount of data that we need some money. Currently, I've got just under 1700 applications in my portfolio. Onda a lot. The challenges We guys are around the cost, driving down costs to serve so we can pass that back onto our consumers on the challenge that with hard is how best to gain that understanding. Where I alter whole came into play, it was vainly around off ability to use the products quickly for being able to connect to our existing sources to discover the data. What, then, that Thio catalog that information to start applying the rules around whether it be legislation like GDP, are or that way gets a lot of cases where these difference between the states on the standings and definitions so the product gives us the ability to bring a common approach So that information a good success story, would be about three months ago, we took the 30 and applications for our North America home business. We were able to running through the product within a week on that gave us the information to them, consolidate the estate downwards, working with bar business colleagues Thio, identify all the data we don't see the archival retention reels on, bring you no more meaning to the data on actually improve ourselves opportunities by highlights in that rich information that was not known >>previously. Yes, you mentioned that you growing through acquisition. One thing that people tend to underestimate around I t. Is that it's not a heterogeneous. It's not a homogeneous environments hatred genius. Like as soon as you buy another company, you've got another. You got another silent. You got another day to say. You got something else. So walk us through how iota who actually deals with that very disparity set of data that you've night out inherited from just acquiring all of these different companies? >>Yeah, so exactly right. You know, every time we a private organization, they would have various different applications that were running in the estate. Where would be an old article? I say, Hey, sequel tap environment. What we're able to do is use the products to plug in a name profile to understand what's inside knowledge they have around their customer base and how we can number in. That's in to build up a single view and offer additional products value adding products or rewards for customers, whether that be, uh on our hay truck side our heat in a ventilation and air con unit, which again we have 4600 engineers in that space. So it's opening up new opportunities and territories to us. >>Go ahead, >>say additionally to that, we're across multiple sectors, but the problem death by Excel was in the financial service is we're located on Wall Street. As I mentioned on this problem of legacy to spirit, data, sources and understanding, and knowing your data was a common problem, banks were just throwing people at the problem. So his use case with 1700 applications, a lot of them legacy is fits right into what we d'oh and cataloging is he mentioned. We catalogue with that discover in search engine that we have. We enable search cross enterprise. But Discovery we auto tag and auto classify the sensitive data into the catalog automatically, and that's a key part of what we do. And it >>was that Dave is something in thinking of differentiation, wanting to know what is unique about Iota. What was the opportunity that you guys saw? But is the cataloging and the sensitive information one of the key things that makes it a difference >>Way enabled data governance. So it's not just sensitive information way catalog, entire data set multiple data sets. And what makes us what differentiates us is that the machine learning way Interrogate in brute force The data So every single so metadata beyond so 1,000,000,000 rose. 100,000 columns. Large, complex data sets way. Interrogate every field value. And we tell you what this looks like A phone number. This looks like an address. This looks like a first name. This looks like the last name and we tagged at to the catalog. And then anything that sensitive in nature will color coded red green, highly sensitive, sensitive. So that's our big differentiator. >>So is that like 100% visibility into the granularity of what is in this data? >>Yes, that's that's one of the issues is who were here ahead of us. We're finding a lot of folks are wanting to go to the cloud, but they can't get access to the data. They don't know their data. They don't understand it. On DSO where that bridge were a key strategic partner for aws Andi we're excited about the opportunity that's come about in the last six months with AWS because we're gonna be that key geese for migration to the cloud >>so that the data like I love the name iota, How But in your opinion, you know, you could hear so many different things about Data Lake Data's turning into data Swamp is there's still a lot of value and data lakes that customers just like you're saying before, you just don't know what they have. >>Well, what's interesting in this transition to one of other clients? But on I just want to make a note that way actually started in the relational world. So we're already a mess. We're across header genius environment so but Tahoe does have more to do with Lake. But at a time a few years back, everybody was just dumping data into the lake. They didn't understand what what was in there, and it's created in this era of privacy, a big issue, and Comcast had this problem. The large Terry Tate instance just dumping into the lake, not understanding data flows, how they're data's flowing, not understanding what's in the lake, sensitivity wise, and they want to start, you know they want enable b I. They want they want to start doing analytics, but you gotta understand and know the data, right? So for Comcast, we enable data ops for them automatically with our machine learning. So that was one of the use cases. And then they put the information and we integrated with Apache Atlas, and they have a large JW aws instance, and they're able to then better govern their data on S O N G. Digital. One other customer very complex use case around their data. 36 e. R. P s being migrated toe one virtually r p in the lake. And think about finance data How difficult that is to manage and understand. So we were a key piece in helping that migration happen in weeks rather than months. >>David, you mentioned cloud. Clearly weird. We're at a cloud show, but you mentioned knowing your data. One of the aspect of that cloud is that it moves fast, and it's a much bigger scale than what we've been used to. So I'm interested. Maybe, Eddie, you can. You can fill us in here as well about the use of a tool to help you know your data when we're not creating any less stated. There's just more and more data. So at this speed and this scale, how important is it that you actually have tooling to provide to the to the humans who have to go on that operate on all of this data >>building on what David was saying around the speed in the agility side, you know, now all our information I would know for North America home business is in AWS Hold on ns free bucket. We are already starting work with AWS connect on the call center side. Being able to stream that information through so we're getting to the point now is an organization where we're able to profile the data riel. Time on. Take that information Bolts predict what the customers going going to do is part that machine learning side. So we're starting to trial where we will interject into a call to say, Well, you know, a customer might be on your digital site trying to do a journey. You can see the challenges around data, and you could Then they go in with a chop using, say, the new AWS trap that's just coming through at the moment. So >>one of the things that opportunities I'm here. Sorry, Eddie is the opportunity to leverage the insights into the data to deliver more. You mentioned like customer words, are more personalized experience or a call center agent. Knowing this is the problem of this customer is experiencing this way. Have tried X, y and Z to resolve, or this customer is loyal to pay their bills on time. They should be eligible for some sort of reward program. I think consumers that I think amazon dot com has created us this demanding consumer that way expect you to know us. I expect you to serve us up things that you think we want. Talk to me about the opportunity that I owe Ty was is giving your business to be able to delight customers in ways that you probably couldn't even have predicted? >>Well, they touched on the tagging earlier, you know, survive on the stunned in the data that's coming through. Being able to use the data flow technology on dhe categorizing were able than telling kidding with wider estate. So David mentioned Comcast around 36 e. R. P. You know, we've just gone through the same in other parts of our organization. We're driving the additional level of value, turning away from being a manually labor intensive task. So I used to have 20 architects that daily goal through trying to build an understanding the relationship. I do not need that now. I just have a couple of people that are able to take the outputs and then be able to validate the information using the products. >>And I like that. There's just so much you mentioned customer 360. Example at a call centre. There's so much data ops that has to happen to make that happen on. That's the most difficult challenge to solve. And that's where we come in. And after you catalogue the data, I just want to touch on this. We enable search for the enterprise so you're now connected to 50 115 100 sources with our software. Now you've catalogued it. You profiled it. Now you can search Karen Kim Kim Smith, So your your your engineers, your architect, your data stewards influences your business analysts. This is folks can now search anything they want and find anything sensitive. Find that person find an invoice, and that helps enable. But you mentioned the customer >>360. But I can Also. What I'm hearing is, as it has the potential to enable a better relationship between I t in the business. >>Absolutely. It brings those both together because they're so siloed. In this day and age, your data siloed and your business is siloed in a different business unit. So this helps exactly collaborate crowdsource, bring it all together. One platform >>and how many you so 1700 applications. How many you mentioned the 36 or so air peace. What percentage? If you can guess who have you been able to reduce duplicate triplicate at center applications? And what are some of the overarching business benefits that direct energy is achieving? >>So incentive the direct senator, decide that we're just at the beginning about journey. We're about four months in what? We've already decommissioned 12. The applications I was starting to move out to the wider side in terms of benefits are oh, I probably around 300% of the moment >>in a 300% r A y in just a few months. >>Just now, you know you've got some of the basic savings around the story side. We're also getting large savings from some of the existing that support agreements that we have in place. David touched on data Rob's. I've been able to reduce the amount of people that are required to support the team. There is now a more common on the standing within the organization and have money to turn it more into a self care opportunity with the business operations by pushing the line from being a technical problem to a business challenge. And at the end of the day, they're the experts. They understand the data better than any IittIe fault that sat in a corner, right? So I'm >>gonna ask you one more question. What gave you the confidence that I Oh, Tahoe was the right solution for you >>purely down Thio three Open Soul site. So we come from a you know I've been using. I'll tell whole probably for about two years in parts of the organization. We were very early. Adopters are over technologies in the open source market, and it was just the ability thio on the proof of concept to be able to turn it around iTunes, where you'll go to a traditional vendor, which would take a few months large business cases. They need any of that. We were able to show results within 24 48 hours on now buys the confidence. And I'm sure David would take the challenge of being able to plug in some day. >> And one topic. I want to get onto that. You mentioned it up and you opened the can of worms on this. So I blame you. His blood flow restriction training you called B F R. And Freeman listening chases the well, the most well versed individuals in this area. I was, I learned from him probably weekly on it, and I get studies from him. I used to be daily. Probably. It will lessen consistent now, because he's probably realizing that I can't read that fast. But I'm gonna chase to talk a little bit about some of protocols that you used be a far and harder you can use it for. Not yet. That's like development for individuals who might just be seeking an alternative way to work out whether the older adults, people who travel on the road and what it does physiologically for not only muscle growth, but the tendon thickness, like you said, and some of the other other >> protocols. Such a cellular swelling protocols. >> Yeah, yeah, I think you know, the one thing I would say about our previous of conversation with incense Thing is, I'm not telling people not to take him out like running around saying that that's the devil and all that. So I make sure that I'm not like one of those zealots about that stuff. It's it's just Hey, do you need it? You know, like this, that thought process is critical. Is this necessary? Not let me just problem cause I'm sore today, right? I think that's the caveat I want people to walk away with is that everything is necessary if it's necessary. And if it's not, is there a better alternative, or is it just part of life? Is that part of being a division one athlete or, you know, somebody who's recreational? E fit is you're going to feel a little sore and tired. Is it necessary to take that pill that made negatively? Thank you. So I think that's one thing I want to say, but kind of moving on to the >> You are not a dealer. I will vouch for it. Yeah. Interesting topic to talk about. And I give you credit for being open minded on both ends. Yes, everyone was concerned. >> Yeah, Yeah, I want to throw that out there. But I think with the Bee Afar stuff, it's I'm so ill. I've learned a lot from the man. Dr Headless Sarah. Hey, Works is Smart tools company, which they're just absolutely revolutionising how available and the education that's associative willful restrictions. So I you know, I I'm gonna kind of pass on that credit and say that, uh, they're really pushing the field forward, and I'm not affiliated with the company. I just think what they're doing is is fantastic work, because local restriction obviously has been around for a long time. It's not new, you know, we're not pretending it's new, but you know, it's really the availability of cuffs for sort of affordable prices has made it seem no refreshed and kind of a new life to it started in the late nineties in Japan, really doing a lot of the early research on it. Ah, lot of people started with tine off with different straps and and, ah, bands that they're just wrapping around their arms and looking for, you know, in a partial occlusion and some cases probably dangerously a full ischemia. But I think you saw it. And most recent years, with some of the owns recovery and the Delphi's, which come in a pretty high price tag and as I mentioned, smart tools has come out. They have much more affordable. I think it's, you know, a tenth of the price. And so now you're able tto. But these types of you know it's tool and everybody's hands. And I think it's is changing the landscape as faras, a modality that has multiple uses. And that's one thing when we talk sports science, we talked technology. You know, everything has a time in place. But when I look and evaluate and vet out technology, or whatever we're going to bring on is as a new resource. I always looked forward to have multiple uses, doesn't have a bang for your buck, and I think the blood flow restriction does. It's versatile. It can be used in rehab. You can be used to build muscle confused for strength. It can be used as, ah, activity potentially ater so you can use it. Potentially increase your subsequent performance with an acute time window. You can use it as a recovery tool, so I think the the utilization of it is still we're learning about it. There's still no definitive. Here's how this happens in this sequence but I think that's what Everything right? The human body. We're learning so much about it. But the science that's there has proven that low load with local restriction, where we're including one hundred percent venous return, but partially including arterial inflow. So there is blood flow going into the muscles and the periphery, but there is no blood flow returning, and so it creates a cooling effect. We're essentially you're gonna limit the availability of oxygen. You're going to decrease the pH and more acidic. You're goingto deplete foster creating stores. You're essentially going to run through the size of principle and use up small of slow twitch fibers and skip essentially rights of fast switch fivers with a low load or even a non loaded exercise. So I think when you talk about somebody who's got limitations, maybe they just had surgery. They can't run. They can't have the impulse of the impact that you would need or you would want to see toe. I kind of developed the most cultures. They come back. Little restriction is a great way because takes a low load exercise and you realise, is that restricted bowling and you get a subsequent fast, which adaptation? So you're you're simulating the big boys, the ones that move us, the ones that make us jump and run faster. Ah, and I think you're seeing time Windows of adaptation that air a sixth of the time Faster, you're getting strength. And I purchased three Adaptation in two weeks, whereas in traditional resistance training it was taking eight to twelve. Um, so And when you talk about, I had an athlete rolled her ankle and I want to make sure that they're not having atrophy is they walk around in a boot. I need to make sure that the muscles around the knees and the hamstrings, the name of the elders, critical drivers and sport aren't just wasting away. So we would have athletes obviously in the rehab sitting, doing protocols to develop muscle but also just sitting the act of just sitting with occlusion passively not doing anything has been shown to cut atrophy by fifty percent. So it's fantastic because it's not invasive. You're not doing anything into him. They're just sitting. So, uh, we don't you know, promote them to play on their phones constantly, but they can sit there and have their phone out and, you know, twenty minutes goes by and they just hopefully of, you know, benefited their return to play and a, you know, a faster, more efficient way than just sitting around. So lots of lots of utility for it. >> Interesting. So for those not familiar bloodflow restriction training the way it works, you gotta cuss. Arms hopefully cast. Not just, uh, elastic band, you tying on. But that's how I started originally from Kat to training out in Japan. So it's a cuff. The attach is approximately on the whim, typically by the shoulder or up along the thigh, and it includes the amount of blood so reduces the amount of blood. Don't go into the muscle, which then allows these Siri's of physiological effects that chase alluded to. That is a difference between Venus and arterial occlusion and chase in. Regards to that were Some of the specifics are for people who aren't as familiar with blood flow. You rattle off a bunch of stuff regarding blood flow and from the adaptations of it. But people who aren't familiar with it you measure the occlusion through Doppler. I believe Smart tools uses a remote Doppler. They're attached to you on the distal limb and everyone using this, what percentages do use? How do you know what you too much occlusion that to type that not tight enough. And we're the protocols that you use once you have the right conclusion for that limb to increase some of these hypertrophy, some muscle growing activities or, you know, just sitting there play on your phone activities that reduces hypertrophy for your athletes. >> Yeah. So what you're doing is you're actually going to take an external Doppler or something that's gonna allow you to magnify the sound of the pulse, right? So if you take radio pulse, you know, right here you would replace the Doppler on it. You would actually be able to hear the heartbeat as it from service, >> due stew, stew, sh >> and up top. They're wearing the cuff. You're going to slowly start to inflate it. It gets tighter, tighter, tighter. And you will eventually get to a point where that, uh, false will start to fade of >> this dish dish. >> And it comes to a point where it's non existent. And so that's when you know that there's been full arterial occlusion that's there one hundred percent. There is no blood flow into that arm. There's no blood flow out. It is included. And so research has shown that basically anywhere from thirty percent in ninety percent, you're gonna have the same amount of occlusion. So if I was explained that, ah, a little bit more detail is so I'm going to take that one hundred percent occlusion number. So if you've ever done your blood pressure and the typical one of perfect blood pressure's one twenty of Brady and that's the same device we're going to use I mean its's stigmata. I'm anemometer the tough one to say, um and you're going to get a number up there like, let's just say two fifty. Alright, so that's your hundred percent occlusion. What again research has shown is that in thirty percent of two. Fifty all the way up to ninety percent of two. Fifty, that's the sweet spot or including arterial, that actually doesn't improve occlusion as the higher you go. So we stick to fifty percent. So, you know, fifty per cent of two fifty is one twenty five. And, ah, you're goingto have Justus. Much of you did it at ninety percent. And really, the differences is pain perception. Because if you start getting up one hundred percent inclusion and telling somebody to exercise, they're not going to like it. It's not going to feel good. So it's a nice sweet spot of saying, Hey, we have included Arterial but not fully restricted, but we have researched it, Venus. But we can still move and be act on DSO with that what you're really looking to do. There's a thirty fifteen fifteen fifteen protocol that's seen pretty commonly, but ultimately you just need to fatigue the muscles. Ito have a low load exercise that's done for high volume, typically fifteen plus wraps for multiple sets with a minimal respirations. So what we're trying to do is we're trying Teo, allow for blood to be flung, pumped into the muscle. You're goingto actively, you know, contract. Over time, it's going to stimulate fast twitch fibers. You're going to rest for a very short period. More blood flow is going to go to the area. It's gonna keep getting more acidic. It's going to keep activating Mohr fast twitch, and you're going to just repeat that. And so I mean it really, really magnifies the response of typically a weight or resistance that would be almost no impact on you at all. You would have no performance benefit from using a weight that light. So you can really use it as you know, when I was in a rehab setting with an athlete who has very little capability to handle load. Or you could use it as a finisher in your body builder. And you wantto stimulate ah, muscle group that's lagging, and you really want to build it up. Ah, it's the fantastic thing I think about It is it's a minimally damaging activity. And what I mean by that is that you're gonna have a dramatic reduction and creating stores of CK levels. Lt's myoglobin. You're not going to get the same mechanical breakdown that you see what too difficult resistance training when we start talking about internal load and H R V. If you were to substitute and in season lift with the Afar, you're still going to get strengthened and have virtually adaptation without the potential systemic load. That may be a typical resistance training session. Does the now you start talking about minimizing, uh, internal responses? Bye. Still getting annotation, so it's it's pretty, pretty amazing. >> Yeah, that's that's something. So I've seen personally as well. I use smart tools, smart tools. I'm not feeling it with a big fan of whom, because they made it affordable for individuals like you, of myself actually use them. So we're talking about occlusion. We're talking about reducing amount of arterial occlusion, but not with the amount of Venus inclusions here allowing blood to pool. It's an extent you get large amounts of violation. You increase the amount of capital area is in that area, but you're also not breaking down the muscle in the same way that you would otherwise. So we're lifting a heavy load. You have the fibers himself begin to essentially tear apart. Your body has to rebuild these, but now we're increasing hypertrophy, so growing them also, without having to have this break down response in the muscle itself. But that being said, the loads that you're using are also twenty percent of your one rat max. So a very, very light load you're using to fatigue. How does that affect the tendon itself? Because one thing I've noticed personally, this is I'm not I'm not saying you should do this, Okay, this is what I did and maybe stupid or whatever you wanna call it. I had a really bad Tanaka, the issue of my knee where I couldn't play basket. I couldn't go upstairs well, and I didn't be afar. Traditional trailer at tempo work. But when I started doing be fr low level plyometrics when I started inducing some of the shearing forces on the tendon to increase adaptation that area that otherwise might not be there with a >> low load, >> I started Teo see much better results in my knee compared to some of the tempo work. Do you do anything specifically with B a far that might target attendant outside of the traditional thirty wraps, fifteen wraps, fifteen reps. Fifteen reps with >> a low load. >> Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I think you know some of the ice of measures that we talked about when you were working in Stanford and having that Anil Jessica effect. So having the ability to have the mitigation on acute windows of what, fifteen, forty five minutes, but also the college and proliferation. So you're getting an increase in human growth hormone that there's like one hundred seventy percent times greater after ah workout, which we know. H gh doesn't necessarily build bigger muscles, but it does stimulate collagen growth. So when you're having somebody who is maybe coming back from a ruptured Achilles or another, you know IDA cirrhosis issue, You know, it's a great way to help promote and environment and maybe in a vascular area and the kind of forces, nutrients and a hormonal shift that may promote a more appealing environment. I think you know, we talked about it briefly. The training piece, I think you know, the more that you can start to get people into. I'm not overly dramatic, sport specific person, but I think the more you can get people into activities that are going to be replicated on the field, know whether it's sled pushes and walks or whether it's, you know, having some type of, um, you know, activity. If your picture where you're getting your arm through these range of emotions that are going to be necessary while using the inclusion is actually gonna promote a lot of ongoing benefit. I think toe rehabilitate the area on a functional manner and develop not only the musculature, but also remote the properties around that specific tissue that needs to be healed. So I think there's some really cool things that are just now kind of being played with Just because we can actually die. Elin, the proper collusions. We can actually die. Elin. What we want to see happen with you whether it's, uh, some of the cells, whole protocols that we're doing are these giving preconditions. Bread falls. Where were haven't athletes sit for extended period time passively with their occlusion of set? And then they're gonna reap, refuse. We're in, Allow blood flow back, and we're going to do that repeated intervals prior to activity and see a potential for increased power output. Oxygen. Connectix. The research is pretty amazing with some of the human reconditioning and that they're saying, um, increase time to exhaustion, decrease time trial performances. But they don't really know why. You know, there isn't like a clear mechanisms for performance gains that's been totally identified just yet. There has been stuff where it's shown to attenuate lacked eight levels. So you're obviously no cellular. Respiration is enhanced because you're not getting that amount of hydrogen present in the blood. So you may be potentially more efficient energy user using more, more fat and oxygen, so that's great there. But I think you know, as the research are sketching out, that piece is that's one thing that I'm looking at doing for my research focus for school. Is that potentially a shin piece? If I'm already going to be sitting around before a game, or I'm gonna have time between events like a track and field event are, you know, Cool event. And I know I can sit here passively, not use energy, provide a stimulus to the body that's gonna potentially open up neural pathways or physiological mechanisms to increase contract ability of the muscles. I'm going to, then maybe get that extra tenth of a second. I'm going to throw an extra, you know, a couple feet on the javelin. I'm going to do whatever I need to dio potentially at a higher level. I think that's really as we're pushing towards performance. Why do you take, you know, choose during the game like you want increase performance, you want to run longer, and I think this is going to add one more a little layer to it. That from an investment piece is minimally invasive is minimally changing to their to their schedule. They're not. They don't have to do anything crazy. They feel good. And that's the biggest thing. Is the anecdotal feedback on it is man, I feel great. I feel like I have to I don't have to do a full warm up. I feel like I can just kind of get out there, move around. We still have him do stuff, but they just feel like they've warmed up faster. And I think of that piece is gonna be really cool to see if we can demonstrate some of empirical evidence on it. >> Yeah, that I'm excited to see the research, >> and I know you're working hard on it. >> It's kind of a great stop. Making Brava kind really brings us full circle because you look at be fr it, increases their sit in the area and lacked a production and increases economic nervous system arousal, which has been shown both to increase cognitive abilities. Um, neural plasticity and ability to enhance memory. And so why you're doing this? It's also the only prime main the body for the coming activity. We also prime ing the body is a hole in regards to it's mental capacity and not just the muscular area. And so when you start looking at that, you know, full system, the human body and how we can talk about a little bit here, some dynamical systems where you know the body is really complex. What happens in one area affects another. You can't differentiate between your physical mental side because the physical side of the Afar is now enhancing your mental side. Just like your perception. Ten hands a workout. And so you have feedback up and feedback back down. And that's just a great, you know, highlight You brought up because now it's really inclusive. Were we're so often thinking this isolated manner. Oh, if we've been to this or we run this, this will happen. But we don't think about it in this recursive loop manor where what I did to my muscle, right, our muscle releases these myo times. I go talk to our brain, which then go back and talk to our muscle. And we have the endocrine system working together to orchestrate this all and just the whole idea of be a farm for a game It's not just right the muscles and the scheming Preconditioning, but it's also a fact that you're putting the person in a state That's more conducive. Two performance itself, because so often and this isn't to go on a rant and I apologise. And this is something you buy a top about, right? Avoiding the sympathetic states, All right, we don't want to be sitting there before game doing deep belly breathing because we need to be ready to roll. There's a reason why you get excited in these situations and a really excellent full loop example. How Don't comes together there. >> Yeah, I think one last little piece with that, too, is black. Tate has been shown and exercise of a specific lactate now to have been associated with BDNF, right? So that brain derived neurotrophic factor that exercise stimulates like Miracle Gro for the brain, >> and that if >> you're sitting around watching, you know, lecture for an hour, get up to ten SWATs. Walk around, and all of a sudden you have a renewed focus. And so with that to your point of it's all connected is you have an athlete who essentially is going to get a benefit from that. But we're also, you know, and there they'll never watch this, so I'll say it. I do planting that placebo. My burbage is really, really careful. And hey, just so you know, you wear this attempt ten, fifteen minutes before you do some ISOs, your ankle will feel better. It has an ability to mitigate. Think like him. Planting that sense of this is gonna work because we'll see Bo Effect works. We know it does. So there's a little bit of, you know, mix of art and science and how we imply these technologies and saying they like, Hey, Logan, just say no, you wear this before that game, your ankle will feel better. You're gonna feel looser, going to hell faster and just letting them roll with that and don't need to tell him anything else. And I think that to your point of it's all connected can then maximise whatever intervention you want to, then increase performance. >> Yeah, and I'll avoid a rant here. I'll keep it short, I promise. But what you hit on? Perfect. Especially since that. Look at some of studies regarding attendance, they'll look at it and see that the timid itself is healthy, yet they feel pain, and they've done lost studies where they're saying an external stimulus. So something like a metre gnome in the background going Ping Ping Ping and you're focused on the stimulus instead of the pain. And you now begin to de associate your knee with pain because the stimulus and regards to the tempo that's going on the background, you're doing it. Why didn't exercise So now? Because you're focused on this external stimulus fall during exercise, you begin to disassociate pain with your, you know, near tendon during that movement and just really shows how coupled the system is and how our brain talks your body body. And if we perceive that we're healthy right? You said, Oh, mixing the heart and the science while you're mixing the science of the science, right? Your you understand that perception is reality is not necessarily. We like to call it art because there's no number to put behind it. Really. It's, you know, the science that our body is deeply into connected and how are neurons from the brain talked to our muscles? Are muscles tough back to our brain are all essentially one and how everything from your nutrition, your perception to your stress from school, you're emotional state, whether you got a text message from someone that made you upset all effects, your internal load off the body itself. And regardless of what external only put and no matter how hard you want to work, if your internal system isn't able to handle the stimulus they're going to put on it in terms of the load you're going to give then what we're doing is it? It's really falling short of what we're actually trying to accomplish because we're essentially using external load to infer what's going on. But there's so many things that go on inside the body outside of external load that we're only using one system to monitor the internal system. We're kind of I was a falling short, but not maybe doing all that we can. >> D'oh Yeah, I mean, I think the you know not to rant myself, but that's one of the biggest mistakes that we as a sissy practitioners make, is the assumption with general adaptation Centrum theory that you're getting people and that they're adapting at the rate into the dose that you think is appropriate that we're making that assumption as to where they're at. So when we say, Oh, they're at home, you know, stasis. And we're going to apply to weeks of ah loading scheme, and then we're gonna unload, and then we're gonna push it higher because they're going to super compensate. I think that is a load of crap. I think that we want that to be the case because we want to feel justified and feel good ofwhat we d'oh. But in many cases, you really have to dial in all the factors associated with overreaching all the factors associated with performance and mix them and have checks and balances to see truly, if somebody is where you think they are and if you got them where they are and if not, what was the reason why was there an energy insufficiency? Was there a Micronesian problem? Was there associated stress damaging the functioning, The A access All those things have you know they come in to play, but we are so rigid and and a lot of our thinking me included Holy, guilty. This we work in four to six week block. So yeah, you know, my own load is gonna be a three week three. Well, maybe your own unload should be a week nine. You know, like, how do you know that they're not ready for Maura. Maura, Amore. Um, you know, so that I think that assumption of not necessarily taking into consideration that connectedness between all these systems Ah, can get us into trouble to make us have false positives. I think I think we really congrats pawn the stuff that's not there >> now, that's that's couldn't be said better because we like to make it simple, because we can understand Simple. And when we make it complex, we realize we don't really understand that much. But the more we appreciate as complex, the more we can appreciate how applying something simple, like we think a load ten push ups really isn't as simple as it may be. And that at times, can cause paralysis by analysis. Where you have so many things >> going on at once and to consider I'm not saying that we just sit there and measure every single subsystem. I know you're not either, >> but the idea that we need to appreciate that and see where can we maybe refer. Teo, Turn, Tio. That isn't just in the lane off. How much weight do we lift? How much low do we give someone But what other factors could be involved and that athletes life. That's not getting the results that we think this external load should be leading. Tio, it's a great check engine light, because now we have this external load. Hey, I expected to be here in three months, and you're not there. That's okay. Who knows whose fault it is? No one's. But the idea is that now we can turn different people because we didn't see the expected results. We can dive a little deeper, and that's allowing us to utilize our resource is whether it's a friend. You know, a doctor. You know, another practitioner, you know, to help arm us with the information to be the best that we can be. >> Yeah, I think that's what the external load comes in, right. You gotta know if they're not meeting expectations or the desired outcomes. No. Are they typically matching people in practice? You know that are similar positional demands. Are they typically being asked to do something that isn't looking normal? That would then we can kind of backtrack and see how they were doing it. What the fuck? Jack is associated with an internal load work, and again, we don't. We don't monitor everything. We don't think it's necessary. We try and find what's appropriate for his team and scenario. But I think again, if you're mindful and you know you're athletes and you know the scenario of what you're trying to put them in, you can then kind of use your your coaching, I to say, Okay, what are the things that I think may be influencing? Yeah, providing Malad a patient, you know, orange, the desired stimulus, you know, desired outcome. Now, what are we doing to them that we should be seeing or think we should be saying. And if I know them, what is essentially a confounding variable to that? >> Yeah, No, that's perfect. You don't assess everything. A because you can't and be known as time. But you assess what's pertinent and you're aware of what's apartment and you act out the check engine light and facilitate where you can now, well said, because I think both ends resettle. Let's be so simple and just do this or let's on Lee do this aspect over here. But when you take in consideration, all of it, you allow yourself to be the best you can be in your position that you're in because you're not trying to solve everything. You just try to facilitate where you can. Yeah, perfect for Chase. And I want to hold you up too long, and I really appreciate you being here. I want to wrap it up before finishing up here. I got, I guess, two questions for you. I didn't send them to you ahead of time so that I can if you don't have a quick answer, that's fine. The first one is it's pretty simple. I'm not going. I don't mean Resource is in terms of O go to Pub Med or go to this paper. But are there any individuals out there that you can possibly listen to or find that you have found the very informative and not just in terms of all that's good information, but sometimes change the way you think about how you do your job. >> I'm talking to you right now. It's a lot of my my thoughts and know how I address of, you know, some of the the bio mechanics and physics of what we're doing. You know, it's definitely not an area that I'm strong in, and I think you've done a great job of putting information out there for the public tio toe, you know, be able to digest an easy manner, man, you know, a public resource. You know, this may sound kind of cheesy and maybe a little bit of roast sci fi, but I still re t Nation and Goto like all those you know, you know, Jim Wendler sites and freed all the Westside stuff. And, you know, I think you can't isolate sports science and sail. It's just Dad are, Oh, it's just, you know, pumping out research out of the lab or Oh, it's physiology or urge technology. I think each practitioners gonna have their own flavour and what they like and what they bring to the table. And I think that we need to cater to that. Each person should say, Hey, this is what I'm good at. These are my skills. I want to learn more about tax and if X s o happens to be baseball and throwing and overhead athletes than you're going to find the Mike Ryan holds air crises and really dive into that. And if you want to know about traditional pure ization schemes and force plays, you're gonna look at the stone stuff. You're gonna look at half, you're going to look at people who are early pioneers in it. So I think, you know, I don't have ah, necessarily a one person go follow, but it's more of a question to the question is what do you want to know about? What do you like? What's something that's really really, you know, kind of hits the button for you and then just start Googling stuff start, you know, typing these these keywords in and people will start popping up. And I think that's my development has come has jumped. The greatest, I guess Leaves is when I started diving into these rabbit holes of what I want to learn about right now and just saying for the next two weeks, I'm going all in on, you know, let's see saturation lost muscle from Samo, too. You know, I'm just learn everything I can about my loving and hemoglobin and mad a crit and all that stuff. So it's really more about finding what you want to know at that time and just doing a deep dive and then finding something else, doing a deep that and before you know it, you're times years to that and you have a, you know, a well rounded hopefully, you know, face of knowledge to pull from. >> And my last question for you chase. And this might be a tough one for you to answer the that you are the ghost of social media. Yeah, That the king of the King of trolling my page. You know that you are interested. People are interested in following up on what you're doing. Where can they find more information about yourself? What links or handles either. Twitter, Instagram. Would you advise him to look up into and keep a tab on yourself? >> So the only thing I'm using, as I have on Instagram and at Underscore Chase felt so It's It's simple. It's like toe like to troll you and fight in every now and then. But, ah, that's basically what I got. I got a couple post up there. But maybe maybe if, uh, I get a little help, we'll see how it Ah, how it grows. >> Yeah. I highly advise you guys following him because we continue to push him to post more stuff. (techno music) >> Welcome back to theCUBE's live coverage of Lenovo Transform here in New York City. I'm your host Rebecca Knight along with my co-host Stu Miniman. We're joined by Rod Lappin. He is the senior vice president in marketing here at Lenovo. And Roger Cox, the research vice president at Gartner. Thank you much, gentlemen for coming on theCUBE. >> Thanks for having us! Excited. >> So the big news for the day, NetApp, Lenvovo Two global powerhouses joining forces I want to hear Rod, the Lenovo speil, and then I want to hear your analysis of the deal and what you make of it. So why don't you go ahead. >> Yes, so obviously we're really really excited, Rebecca. It's a great day for us. I think it's something that we've been really planning with NetApp for obviously a long time, and to actually have it come to fruition is really exciting for all of us, right. So as you would have known, probably, our storage offering in market has been quite small up until now. We're addressing about 15% of the market. With this new deal with NetApp we're sort of in the TAM the target market. We can after up to about 92%. We've been quite good at storage. We've been growing about 2X the market average in Flash, over 100% year on year, but we haven't really had the full product range that we've needed to really address out customers' needs, and so, now having this, having this deal now with NetApp means we can go after our customers and really bring value to them the way that we have wanted and definitely the way our customers are asking us to. >> And so that's my question. Was it customer driven? Was it them saying: We just need you to able to do more or what? >> I think if you look at our core business last quarter, Gartner, obviously, ranked us as the fastest growing server business globally. We grew 68% year on year on our revenue last quarter. And so, with the momentum we've got now as a business, we're seeing our customers want us to do more. We're number one in customer satisfaction, number one in reliability, so they see value in us generally but we had sort of what I would classify as a subsegment of the storage market that we want to address. And of course our customers are saying to us: Hey, we want you to do more for us because we like the way you've performed. So it's been good for us. We're excited >> Yeah. >> So, Rodger you know a thing or two about the storage industry and NetApp specifically. So give us the customer viewpoint. You talked to a lot of them. >> Well, first of all let's say this is one of the better kept secrets because it never leaked out. So really haven't been getting customer calls on this event yet but I'm sure we will starting today be getting a lot >> Yeah, they brought a few analysts down to RTP in July and I remember, Rodger you said: What do I do when the customers call? and they're like, shh, shh. Customers aren't going to call. We're going to keep it under wraps. >> And they did a good job of it. But anyways, what it means, I think, to Lenovo is it really elevates Lenovo's standing as a provider of IT technology for the data center. So they now have, not only a very competitive server offering, which Rod's talked about quite a bit, they have what many believe to be one of the best storage offerings in the business. And now they can go compete head to head against Dell EMC, as well as with HPE, which would be the two larger competitors that they have to deal with. So it's going to be very good in terms of providing an alternative to clients for data center technology-involved storage. Good thing. We like competition. >> Absolutely, and we want to be part of it. I think up until now we probably haven't been able to. So when you look at how we're going to market, my field sales team has been planning with the NetApp field's also. We've been basically coordinating how we go to market where do we attack together, where do we have conflict, where do we not. So we actually go in and really focus in on those core competitors that Roger's just described which is where we want to go. >> In the keynote this morning it said from a channel standpoint, there's not a lot of overlap which, on the one hand, I'm saying: Well, sounds like we'll need a lot of training then. But how do you hit the ground running fast? >> So we are already ready to go. We start shipping tomorrow, so that's the good thing about this announcement. Like Roger said, we kept it under wraps, but we are ready to manufacture and go. So, I think it's a really exciting spot for us. From a go-to-market perspective in the channel, NetApp has traditionally been very much about engaging end users, fulfilling through the channel, but engaging end users. Where Lenovo's got a much stronger forte around mid-market and SMB. And we've got a much stronger forte in emerging market, so if you actually start to split geographically the world up a little bit and then you can start to split how we got to market a little you can actually find some really big parts of the market that we don't conflict at all that we can go after. >> But you see, from my point of view, the bigger challenge they have is to go to market. Now they could say there's not much overlap, but you know there's always overlap. There's going to be certain accounts where Lenovo already has a position, and maybe NetApp has a position, too. Then, who's going to do what given a time? So, the biggest challenge that Lenovo has here is also a challenge for NetApp is how they manage together the go to market motion, as well as the service and support because Lenovo's going to have level one, level two support responsibility. They're going to have that revenue to go for support. We'll see how that works out over time. >> I want to ask you what your advice would be to Lenovo leadership in terms of, this deal enables it to go after bigger players and to take over more of the market. But when it's now going head to head with Dell EMC , what do you think it should focus on? >> I think it should focus more on marketing. The products speak for themselves. The competency of these products are well-known. Besides this, it gives Lenovo the opportunity to become more cloud-friendly, too. Because they also have access to all of the software out of NetApp's cloud data services organization. So my main advice would be to Rod, because he's responsible for this, (Rod and Rebecca laugh) is put more wood behind arrow. Get Huawei to put up more money to accentuates the marketing of the product. Create more enthusiasm about the fact that you're now up at another level in terms of being an IT provider to the data center. >> It's a well kept secret as you started out by saying >> Yeah! >> That's right so we've got a business case that we've put together that's starting today obviously. Which involves us getting out and starting to hit the ground running with a lot of media. There's a lot of social media noise today on it obviously. Thanks very much to people like yourselves which is great. And I think we're going to see a lot more marketing-based initiative that run both through the channel as well as to the end users across our, what I classify as our T-1 countries to start with. To Roger's point, though, when we look at the go-to-market, we basically categorize in all the accounts into four boxes. Those accounts where NetApp's very strong and Lenovo's very strong which means Lenovo's strong from the server perspective. NetApp's very strong from the storage perspective. >> FAP would be one of those. >> That's right. That's a very good example. And in that environment, we're going to collaborate and show them we're communicating with each other and ultimately, not fight with each other. We're going to recognize that we want to continue to protect our server business. They're protecting their storage business. We don't want to touch that. In a place where Lenovo, for example, may be weak and NetApp very strong, so they're got a very good storage relationship, we want them to bring our servers into that space. Because obviously if they don't bring us in, then one of our key competitors that is also competitive in NetApp is going to have a foot in the door there somewhere. So, we're going to drive a little bit of a different strategy in that environment. Then, we've got obviously the third environment where Lenovo's very strong from a server perspective and NetApp's nowhere. In that environment, it's free fields for Lenovo to go after that with our new storage array. And then obviously, where we're both neither engaging those customers, it's in acquisition for both. We're going to play and ultimately go after them. There's some really great things that we've been able to put together with this relationship. Like for example, comp neutrality. So, the NetApp teams when we go into that third and fourth box I was just talking about, the NetApp sales force is going to paid the same whether it goes on a Lenovo hardware or goes on the NetApp hardware. So, we've got some pieces that sort of ensure that we don't have conflicts and we're all aligned to ultimately grow and compete with Dell EMC and HPE. >> So, Roger There have been some interesting server and storage partnerships. I think back a decade ago, Dell and EMC did billions of dollars together. It eventually broke up, and then what do you know, it went back together. I think five years ago, NetApp had pretty strong server partnership there. The storage market has changed a lot in the five to ten years. Tell our audience a little bit how NetApp's different, how the storage market's different, and how customers should be thinking about an arrangement like this. >> Well, the storage market's different because there's more alternatives for storage. There's the Cloud: AWS, Azure, even Google Cloud. You get over to Asia, Alibaba over in Asia and so forth. So that's had a very large impact on on-premises storage. The other one is hyper converged. Lenovo's very much a hyper converged business. They have relationships with Nutanix. They've got them with VMware. They have them with Pivot3 and some others. And so, all of these things come together to create a different alternative to the classical three-tier infrastructure: server, networking, and storage. So, all those things are going to exist. And, the upright storage market, while it may be a declining market from a revenue perspective, has a long payoff. It's going to be like mainframe, so it'll be here forever. Like Tate, here forever. It's like me. I'll be here forever. (Rod and Rebecca laugh) So right now, Stu, we're seeing a little bit of a bubble. So we are getting a bubble interns of, this is a good time by the way for Lenovo to have this partnership because there is more likelihood of increase spending for IT. Good economy in the States, good economy over in Europe. Good economy around the world for that matter. I think it's going to last another couple years. 2018, 2019, maybe in the 20's before it starts tailing off again. So the way people are talking to me now, it's kind of like a flush. Hey, we got all this money. We're going to go spend it. Refresh everything. Get more over into Flash. I think they will sell a lot of Flash, even with the entry product, what they call a DE. I think they'll sell a lot of Flash there. And of course up in the DM series, which is the equivalent of NetApp's A200, A300 which are top tier products. They'll sell a lot of Flash there, too. >> I would say as what you just mentioned, the traditional storage market is reducing, but Flash is obviously growing. NetApp last quarter was the number one Flash company in the world. 27.6% market share-- >> Where do I check that out? (Rebecca laughs) That comes from another source >> That comes from another source, yeah sorry. But they hit number one last quarter according to an unknown source. But I think that's really encouraging, right? And at that part of the market Flash is about 30-40% of the overall storage market right now and easily the fastest growing. So this product range really drives an all-Flash array type solution that we can actually take advantage of. >> Rod, we want to get your perspective China, too. That's a big piece of this announcement. Maybe you an talk a little bit about that. I think Roger's got some comments on it. >> Well, think this is a good deal for NetApp. This is the reason why I think maybe the channel conflict won't be as bad as it was for the Dell EMC guys. This is the way for NetApp. NetApp wants to go more and more towards the Cloud. You look at their strategy. It's going more and more towards the Cloud with all of the Cloud data services software that they're developing. And so they're putting more and more emphasis on that. At the same time, the relationship they have with Lenovo gives them the opportunity to get really a creative revenue that otherwise would not get. Allows them maybe to reduce the burden that they would have under manufacturing SGNE expenses and stuff like that. But the big benefit is China. They JB in China is going to give NetApp a entry into China that otherwise would not be able to get because of the laws that the People's Republic of China have. It's a big deal. >> I think we're really excited about China. Obviously that's one of the cornerstones of the deal. So it's an independent organization that's going to be set up. Lenovo will have 51% ownership. NetApp will have 49. Seven board members. Four of them will be Lenovo. Three of them will be NetApp. And ultimately we are going to have that organization just purely specializing on the Lenovo product that is designed by NetApp originally. And it's going to be doing joint IP. We'll have joint developers in there. We'll be able to leverage my existing sales force in China, that's our traditional sales force, to go and drive for everything from a tier one city all the way down to a tier six, tier seven city in PRC. But, that joint venture itself will just be a specialist organization specifically on storage. It's really exciting. >> The thing about the JB it's very very important. Whatever is developed by the JB has to stay in China. That software cannot be taken outside of China because of all the geopolitical issues that you have around the world. Big point. >> Yeah, and a challenge. >> Absolutely It's a challenge that both NetApp and Lenovo have to manage with respect to each other. >> Just for the record, I'm not totally sure. If we develop something in the joint venture, I'm not totally sure that we have to keep that in China. >> I'm not saying that legally you have to. I'm saying emotionally you should. >> Emotional we should. >> Ahhh... >> I was going to say... >> There might be some government concerns on some of that. >> I think it's always going to depend on the government. And we don't want to get into a geopolitical conversation. I think Europe for example will be a lot more liberally open to that sort of stuff >> Speak a little bit about the cultures coming together. NetApp. You've been working on this deal together. sometimes that can be the strength or the challenge. >> I think company cultures are always challenging. And when you get two companies that are, especially right now, as we've heard this morning in some of the sessions, turning the corner. They're both growing. They're both doing very well at the moment. So, there's always a level of confidence, shall we say, in both those situations that you've just got to break down. And I think what we've done very successfully this time is Wei Wei, and George and Kirk, and George and Henri Ricard and myself and Brad Anderson, you saw today who was actually up on stage with us today as well working with us as the executive sponsor on that side. We're lining up our executives globally. All of the field team for Henri Ricard's team and my field team globally have all been interlocking with each other. They're account planning. They're territory planning. We're really trying to break down any of the walls the way may have from a cultural perspective. And really drive a much more open conversation, so we don't get caught out early in the deal. There's a escalation process in the deal. So it goes to a geo level up and then ends up with Henri and myself to actually manage worldwide if something was to get really out of control. But, at the moment, day one, don't see any issues. Seems to be going okay, touch wood. >> They both, Brad and Kirk, said they're complementary companies. Is that your perspective, too? Would you agree with that? >> Well, I think they gave complementary purposes. The interesting thing here is this thing's coming together when both companies are on the uptick. It's not because, go back three years ago and look at where NetApp was three years ago versus where they are today. So it's coming together when both companies, and matter of fact, go back to look at Lenovo two years ago as well >> Absolutely. >> So it's been an uptick that happened here over the last three years, so this thing's coming together when both companies are doing quite well in that respect. >> So-- >> By the way I want to mention Gartner will be publishing a report in September on this transaction from NetApp's point of view. And we'll be publishing a report on in November on this transaction from Lenovo's point of view. >> Great, so one of the things people like Roger and I have to do is, we look at how we would say whether something's successful or not. So I want to get your point first too and then when you look out six, 12, 18 months from now, whether it is successful and the thing I have to say is Kirk and Brad said, well, our goal is to number three in China, and I said isn't that a low bar? Aren't you practically on day one? I mean you're two joint companies. It's going to be there? >> I can't count on my boss to be honest with you. >> You've got the sales team. I know you can do that. >> I would love to. I think at the moment let's just talk about the joint venture for a second. I think the point is at the moment we are only 15% addressable market with our existing range. And so at the moment, we're saying, hey we can address 15% of the market. That puts us way outside of the number 10 slot in PRC. So, to say we want to be number three, is quite ambitious. Especially because we want to try to do it in the next couple of years. So, I actually feel like he's being quite aggressive from a growth perspective, so I think that's quite balanced. Outside of that, I really want to measure us on profitable growth. We really want to diversify our share of wallet and our customer base. We've got a great customer base now from a server perspective. We need to really expand that to ensure that we're taking advantage of the customer feedback we've had. So, I think that's a pretty good spot. >> At the end of the day, the success of non-success of this program is in Rod's hands. (laughing) On the one hand, >> I love the pressure you're putting me under >> And then Laura, on the services support side. People will support this program if they get good quality service and support. So, you have to keep that up for this program. >> Absolutely, and at the moment, the services model is level one and level two is run by Lenovo internally and then level three escalation runs into the NetApp program. [Music] and y'all know that these [Music] ladies and gentlemen please take your seats and silence your cellphone's our program will begin shortly ladies and gentlemen please welcome Red Hat executive vice president and chief people officer dallisa Alexander an executive vice president and chief marketing officer Tim Layton [Music] hi everyone we're so excited to kick off this afternoon day 2 at the Red Hat summit we've got a stage full of stories about people making amazing contributions with open source well you know dallisa you and I both been coming to this event for a long long time so what keeps you coming back well you know the summit started as a tech conference an amazing tech conference but now it's expanded to be so much more this year I'm really thrilled that we're able to showcase the power of open source going way beyond the data center and beyond the cloud and I'm here also on a secret mission oh yes I'm here to make sure you don't make too many bad dad jokes so there's no such thing as a bad dad they're just dad jokes are supposed to be bad but I promise to keep it to my limit but I do have one okay I may appeal to the geeks in the audience okay so what do you call a serving tray full of empty beer cans yeah we container platform well that is your one just the one that's what I only got a budget of one all right well you know I have to say though in all seriousness I'm with you yeah I've been coming to the summit since its first one and I always love to hear what new directions people are scoring what ideas they're pursuing and the perspectives they bring and this afternoon for example you're gonna hear a host of different perspectives from a lot of voices you wouldn't often see on a technology mainstage in our industry and it's all part of our open source series live and I have to say there's been a lot of good buzz about this session all week and I'm truly honored and inspired to be able to introduce them all later this afternoon I can tell you over the course the last few weeks I've spent time with all of them and every single one of them is brilliant they're an innovator they're fearless and they will restore your faith in the next generation you know I can't wait to see all these stories all of that and we've got some special guests that are surprised in store for us you know one of the things that I love about the people that are coming on the stage today with us is that so many of them teach others how to code and they're also bringing more people that are very different in to our open-source communities helping our community is more innovative and impactful and speaking of innovative and impactful that's the purpose of our open brand project right that's right we're actually in the process of exploring a refresh of our mark and we'd really like your help as well because we're doing this all in the open we've we've been doing it already in the open and so please join us in our feedback zone booth at the summit to tell us what you think now it's probably obvious but I'm big into Red Hat swag I've got the shirt I've got my pen I've got the socks so this is really important to me personally especially that when my 15 year old daughter sees me in my full regalia she calls me adorable okay that joke was fed horrible as you're done it wasn't it wasn't like I got way more well Tim thanks for helping us at this stage for today it's time to get started with our first guest all right I'll be back soon thank you the people I'm about to bring on the stage are making outstanding contributions to open source in new and brave ways they are the winners of the 2018 women and open source Awards the women in open source awards was created to highlight the contributions that women are making to open source and to inspire new generations to join the movement our judges narrowed down the panel a very long list just ten finalists and then the community selected our two winners that were honoring today let's learn a little bit more about them [Music] a lot of people assume because of my work that I must be a programmer engineer when in fact I specifically chose and communications paths for my career but what's fascinating to me is I was able to combine my love of Communications and helping people with technology and interesting ways I'm able to not be bound by the assumptions that everybody has about what the technology can and should be doing and can really ask the question of what if it could be different I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare just because I feel like has the most impact in helping people a lot of what I've been working on is geared towards developing technology and the health space towards developing world one of the coolest things about open-source is bringing people together working with other people to accomplish amazing things there's so many different projects that you could get involved in you don't even have to be the smartest person to be able to make impact when you're actually developing for someone I think it's really important to understand the need when you're pushing innovation forward sometimes the cooler thing is not [Music] for both of us to have kind of a health care focus I think it's cool because so many people don't think about health care as being something that open-source can contribute to it took a while for it to even get to the stage where it is now where people can open-source develop on concepts and health and it's an untapped potential to moving the world for this award is really about highlighting the work of dozens of women and men in this open source community that have made this project possible so I'm excited for more people to kind of turn their open-source interest in healthcare exciting here is just so much [Music] I am so honored to be able to welcome to the stage some brilliant women and opensource first one of our esteemed judges Denise Dumas VP of software engineering at Red Hat she's going to come up and share her insights on the judging process Denise so you've been judging since the very beginning 2015 what does this judge this being a judge represents you what does the award mean to you you know every year it becomes more and more challenging to select the women an opensource winner because every year we get more nominees and the quality of the submissions well there are women involved in so many fabulous projects so the things that I look for are the things that I value an open source initiative using technology to solve real world problems a work ethic that includes sin patches and altruism and I think that you'll see that this year's nominees this year's winners really epitomize those qualities totally agree shall we bring them on let's bring them on let's welcome to the stage Zoe de gay and Dana Lewis [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] alright let's take a seat [Applause] well you both have had an interesting path to open-source zuy you're a biomedical engineering student any of it you have a degree in public relations tell us what led to your involvement and open source yeah so coming to college I was new I was interested in science but I didn't want to be a medical doctor and I didn't want to get involved in wet lab research so through classes I was taking oh that's why I did biomedical engineering and through classes I was taking I found the classroom to be very dry and I didn't know how how can I apply what I'm learning and so I got involved in a lot of entrepreneurship on campus and through one of the projects I was asked to build a front end and I had no idea how to go about doing that and I had some basic rudimentary coding knowledge and what happened was I got and was digging deep and then found an open source library that was basically building a similar thing that I needed and that was where I learned about open source and I went from there now I'm really excited to be able to contribute to many communities and work on a variety of projects amazing contributions Dana tell us about your journey well I come from a non-traditional background but I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14 and over the next couple years got really frustrated with the limitations of my own diabetes devices but felt like I couldn't change them because that wasn't my job as a patient but it was actually through social media I discovered someone who had solved one of the problems that I had been found having which was getting date off my diabetes device and that's how I learned about open source was when he was willing to share his code with me so when we turned around and made this hybrid closed-loop artificial pancreas system it was a no brainer to make our work open source as well that's right absolutely and we see using the hash tag we are not waiting can you tell us about that yeah so this hash tag was created actually before I even discovered the open source diabetes world but I loved it because it really illustrates exactly the fact that we have this amazing technology in our hands in our pockets and we can solve some of our most common problems so yes you could wait but waiting is now a choice with open source we have the ability to solve some of our hardest problems even problems dealing with life and death that's great so zuy with the vaccine carrier system that you helped to build how were you able to identify the need and where did you build it yes so I think before you even build anything first need to understand what is the problem that you're trying to solve and that really was the case when starting this project I got to collaborate with engineers in Kampala Uganda and travel there and actually interview stakeholders in the medical field medical doctors as well as pharmaceutical companies and from there I really got to understand the health system there as well as what is how do vaccines enter the country and how can we solve this problem and that's how we came up with the solution for an IOT based vaccine carrier tracking system I think it's really important especially today when products might be flashy to also understand what is the need behind it and how do we solve problems with these products yeah yeah it's so interesting how both of you have this interest in health care Dana how do you see open-source playing a role in healthcare but first before you answer that tell us about your shirt so this shirt has the code of my artificial pancreas on it and I love it as an illustration of no thank you I love it as an illustration of how open-source is more than we think it is I've just been blown away by the contributions of people in my open-source communities and I think that that is what we should apply to all of healthcare there's a lot of tools and technologies that are solving real world problems and I think if we take what we know in technology and apply it to healthcare we'll solve a lot of problems more quickly but it really needs to be recognizing everything an open source it's the documentation it's the collaboration it's the problem-solving it's working together to take technologies that we didn't previously think we're applicable and finding new ways to apply it it's a great answer Sooey yeah I think especially where healthcare is related to people and open-source is the right way to collaborate with people all over the world especially in the project I've been working on we're looking at vaccines in Uganda but the same system can be applied in any other country and then you can look at cross countries health systems there and from there it becomes bigger and bigger and I think it's really important for people who have an idea and want to take it further to know that open-source is a way that you could actually take your idea further whether you have a technical background or not so yeah stories are amazing you're just an inspiration for everyone in open-source I want to thank you so much for very very well and I know that so many people have been inspired today especially the next generation who go on to do things we can't even dream of yet [Music] I think collabs important because we need to make sure we get younger children interested in technology so that they understand the value of it but also that there are a lot of powerful women in technology and they can be one of them I hope after this experience maybe we'll get some engineers and some girls working our hot so cool right well we have some special guests convite for the club stage now I'd like to invite Tim back and also introduce Red Hat's own Jamie Chappell along with our collab students please welcome Gabby tenzen Sofia lyric Camila and a Volyn [Applause] you've been waiting for this moment for a while we're so excited hear all about your experiences but Jamie first tell us about collab sure so collab is red hats way of teaching students about the power of open source and collaboration we kicked off a little over a year ago in Boston and that was so successful that we decided to embark on an East Coast tour so in October we made stops at middle schools in New York DC and Raleigh and these amazing people over here are from that tour and this week they have gone from student to teacher so they've hosted two workshops where they have taught Red Hat summit attendees how to turn raspberry pies into digital cameras they assigned a poem song of the open road by Walt Whitman and they've been working at the open source stories booth helping to curate photos for an installation we're excited to finish up tomorrow so amazing and welcome future women in open source we want to know all about your experiences getting involved can you tell us tenzen tell us about something you've learned so during my experience with collab I learned many things but though however the ones that I valued the most were open source and women empowerment I just I was just so fascinated about how woman were creating and inventing things for the development of Technology which was really cool and I also learned about how open source OH was free and how anyone could access it and so I also learned that many people could you know add information to it so that other people could you learn from it and use it as well and during Monday's dinner I got this card saying that the world needed more people like you and I realized through my experience with collab that the world does not only need people like me but also everyone else to create great technology so ladies you know as you were working on your cameras and the coding was there a moment in time that you had an AHA experience and I'm really getting this and I can do this yes there was an aha moment because midway through I kind of figured out well this piece of the camera went this way and this piece of the camera did it go that way and I also figured out different features that were on the camera during the camera build I had to aha moments while I was making my camera the first one was during the process of making my camera where I realized I was doing something wrong and I had to collaborate with my peers in order to troubleshoot and we realize I was doing something wrong multiple times and I had to redo it and redo it but finally I felt accomplished because I finished something I worked hard on and my second aha moment was after I finished building my camera I just stared at it and I was in shock because I built something great and it was so such a nice feeling so we talked a lot about collaboration when we were at the lab tell us about how learning about collaboration in the lab is different than in school so in school collaboration is usually few and far between so when we went to collab it allowed us to develop new skills of creativity and joining our ideas with others to make something bigger and better and also allowed us to practice lots of cooperation an example of this is in my group everybody had a different problem with their pie camera and we had to use our different strengths to like help each other out and everybody ended up assembling and working PI camera great great awesome collaboration in collab and the school is very different because in collab we were more interactive more hands-on and we had to work closer together to achieve our own goals and collaboration isn't just about working together but also combining different ideas from different people to get a product that is so much better than some of its parts so girls one other interesting observation this actually may be for the benefit of the folks in our audience but out here we have represented literally hundreds and hundreds of companies all of whom are going to be actually looking for you to come to work for them after today we get first dibs that's right but um you know if you were to have a chance to speak to these companies and say what is it that they could do to help inspire you know your your friends and peers and get them excited about open source what would you say to them well I'm pretty sure we all have app store and I'm pretty sure we've all downloaded an app on that App Store well instead of us downloading app State well the computer companies or the phone companies they could give us the opportunity to program our own app and we could put it on the App Store great idea absolutely I've got to tell you I have a 15 year old daughter and I think you're all going to be an inspiration to her for the same absolutely so much so I see you brought some cameras why don't awesome pretty awesome and I would just like to say they truly are fedorable that's just um so if you would like to learn more as you heard the girls say they're actually Manning our open-source stories booth at the summit you know please come down and say hello the stories you've seen thus far from our women and open-source winners as well as our co-op students are really bringing to life the theme of this year's summit the theme of ideas worth exploring and in that spirit what we'd like to do is explore another one today and that is how open-source concepts thrive and expand in the neverending organic way that they do much like the universe metaphor that you see us using here it's expanding in new perspectives and new ideas with voices beyond their traditional all starting to make open-source much bigger than what it was originally started as fact open-source goes back a long way long before actually the term existed in those early days you know in the early 80s and the like most open-source projects were sort of loosely organized collections of self-interested developers who are really trying to build low-cost more accessible replicas of commercial software yet here we are 2018 the world is completely different the open-source collaborative development model is the font of almost all original new innovation in software and they're driven from communities communities of innovation RedHat of course has been very fortunate to have been able to build an extraordinary company you know whose development model is harnessing these open-source innovations and in turning them into technologies consumable by companies even for their most mission-critical applications the theme for today though is we see open-source this open source style collaboration and innovation moving beyond just software this collaborative community innovation is starting to impact many facets of society and you're starting to see that even with the talks we've had already too and this explosion of community driven innovation you know is again akin to this universe metaphor it expands in all directions in a very organic way so for red hat you know being both beneficiaries of this approach and stewards of the open collaboration model we see it important for us to give voice to this broader view of open source stories now when we say open source in this context of course will meaning much more than just technology it's the style of collaboration the style of interaction it's the application of open source style methods to the innovation process it's all about accelerating innovation and expanding knowledge and this can be applied to a whole range of human endeavors of course in education as we just saw today on stage in agriculture in AI as the open source stories we shared at last year's summit in emerging industries like healthcare as we just saw in manufacturing even the arts all these are areas that are now starting to benefit from collaboration in driving innovation but do we see this potentially applying to almost any area of human endeavor and it expands again organically expanding existing communities with the addition of new voices and new participants catalyzing new communities and new innovations in new areas as we were talking about and even being applied inside organizations so that individual companies and teams can get the same collaborative innovation effects and most profound certainly in my perspective is so the limitless bounds that exist for how this open collaboration can start to impact some of humankind's most fundamental challenges we saw a couple of examples in fact with our women and open-source winners you know that's amazing but it also potentially is just the tip of the iceberg so we think it's important that these ideas you know as they continue to expand our best told through storytelling because it's a way that you can embrace them and find your own inspirations and that's fundamentally the vision behind our open-source stories and it's all about you know building on what's come before you know the term we use often is stay the shoulders are giants for a lot of the young people that you've seen on this stage and you're about to see on this stage you all are those giants you're the reason and an hour appears around the world are the reasons that open-source continues to expand for them you are those giants the other thing is we all particularly in this room those of us have been around open-source we have an open-source story of our own you know how were you introduced the power of open-source how did you engage a community who inspired you to participate those are all interesting elements of our personal open-source stories and in most cases each of them are punctuated by you here my question to the girls on stage an aha moment or aha moments you know that that moment of realization that enlightens you and causes you to think differently and to illustrate I'm going to spend just a few minutes sharing my open-source story for for one fundamental reason I've been in this industry for 38 years I am a living witness to the entire life of open-source going back to the early 80s I've been doing this in the open-source corner of the industry since the beginning if you've listened to Sirhan's command-line heroes podcasts my personal open story will actually be quite familiar with you because my arc is the same as the first several podcast as she talked about I'm sort of a walking history lesson in fact of open source I wound up at most of the defining moments that should have changed how we did this not that I was particularly part of the catalyst I was just there you know sort of like the Forrest Gump of open-source I was at all these historical things but I was never really sure how it went up there but it sure was interesting so with that as a little bit of context I'm just gonna share my aha moment how did I come to be you know a 59 year old in this industry for 38 years totally passionate about not just open source driving software innovation but what open source collaboration can do for Humanity so in my experience I had three aha moments I just like to share with you the first was in the early 80s and it was when I was introduced to the UNIX operating system and by the way if you have a ha moment in the 80s this is what it looks like so 1982 mustache 19 where were you 2018 beard that took a long time to do all right so as I said my first aha moment was about the technology itself in those early days of the 80s I became a product manager and what at the time was digital equipment corporation's workstation group and I was immediately drawn to UNIX I mean certainly these this is the early UNIX workstation so the user interface was cool but what I really loved was the ability to do interactive programming via the shell but by a--basically the command line and because it was my day job to help figure out where we took these technologies I was able to both work and learn and play all from the same platform so that alone was was really cool it was a very accessible platform the other thing that was interesting about UNIX is it was built with networking and and engagement in mind had its own networking stack built in tcp/ip of course and actually built in a set of services for those who've been around for a while think back to things like news groups and email lists those were the first enablers for cross internet collaboration and that was really the the elements that really spoke to me he said AHA to me that you know this technology is accessible and it lets people engage so that was my first aha moment my second aha moment came a little bit later at this point I was an executive actually running Digital Equipment Corporation UNIX systems division and it was at a time where the UNIX wars were raging right all these companies we all compartmentalized Trump those of the community and in the end it became an existential threat to the platform itself and we came to the point where we realized we needed to actually do something we needed to get ahead of this or UNIX would be doomed the particular way we came together was something called cozy but most importantly the the technique we learned was right under our noses and it was in the area of distributed computing distributed client-server computing inherently heterogenous and all these same companies that were fierce competitors at the operating system level were collaborating incredibly well around defining the generation of client-server and distributed computing technologies and it was all being done in open source under actually a BSD license initially and Microsoft was a participant Microsoft joined the open group which was the converged standards body that was driving this and they participated to ensure there was interoperability with Windows and and.net at the time now it's no spoiler alert that UNIX lost right we did but two really important things came out of that that sort of formed the basis of my second aha moment the first is as an industry we were learning how to collaborate right we were leveraging open source licenses we realized that you know these complex technologies are best done together and that was a huge epiphany for the industry at that time and the second of course is that event is what opened the door for Linux to actually solve that problem so my second aha was all about the open collaboration model works now at this point to be perfectly candidates late 1998 well we've been acquired by compacts when I'm doing the basically same role at Compaq and I really had embraced what the potential impact of this was going to be to the industry Linux was gaining traction there were a lot of open source projects emerging in distributed computing in other areas so it was pretty clear to me that the in business impact was going to be significant and and that register for me but there was seem to be a lot more to it that I hadn't really dropped yet and that's when I had my third aha moment and that was about the passion of open-source advocates the people so you know at this time I'm running a big UNIX group but we had a lot of those employees who were incredibly passionate about about Linux and open source they're actively participating so outside of working a lot of things and they were lobbying more and more for the leadership to embrace open source more directly and I have to say their passion was contagious and it eventually spread to me you know they were they were the catalyst for my personal passion and it also led me to rethink what it is we needed to go do and that's a passion that I carry forward to this day the one driven by the people and I'll tell you some interesting things many of those folks that were with us at Compaq at the time have gone on to be icons and leaders in open-source today and many of them actually are involved with with Red Hat so I'll give you a couple of names that some of whom you will know so John and Mad Dog Hall work for me at the time he was the person who wrote the first edition of Linux for dummies he did that on his own time when he was working for us he he coined he was part of the small team that coined the term open source' some other on that team that inspired me Brian Stevens and Tim Burke who wrote the first version to rent out Enterprise Linux actually they did that in Tim Burke's garage and cost Tim's still with Red Hat today two other people you've already seen him on stage today Denise Dumas and Marko bill Peter so it was those people that I was fortunate enough to work with early on who had passion for open-source and much like me they carry it forward to this day so the punchline there is they ultimately convinced us to you know embrace open-source aggressively in our strategy and one of the interesting things that we did as a company we made an equity investment in Red Hat pre-ipo and a little funny sidebar here I had to present this proposal to the compact board on investing in Red Hat which was at that time losing money hand over fist and they said well Tim how you think they're gonna make money selling free software and I said well you know I don't really know but their customers seem to love them and we need to do this and they approve the investment on the spot so you know how high do your faith and now here we are at a three billion dollar run rate of this company pretty extraordinary so from me the third and final ha was the passion of the people in the way it was contagious so so my journey my curiosity led me first to open source and then to Red Hat and it's been you know the devotion of my career for over the last thirty years and you know I think of myself as pretty literate when it comes to open source and software but I'd be the first one to admit I would have never envisioned the extent to which open source style collaboration is now being brought to bear on some of the most interesting challenges in society so the broader realization is that open source and open can really unlock the world's potential when applied in the collaborative innovative way so what about you you know you many of you particular those have been around for a while you probably have an open source story of your own for those that maybe don't or they're new to open source are new to Red Hat your open source story may be a single inspiration away it may happen here at the summit we certainly hope so it's how we build the summit to engage you you may actually find it on this stage when I bring up some of the people who are about to follow me but this is why we tell open-source stories and open source stories live so each of you hopefully has a chance to think about you know your story and how it relates over source so please take advantage of all the things that are here at the summit and and find your it's really about citizen scientists using open systems to do serious science in their backyards and environmental areas and the like we're going to preview that I'm gonna prove it preview it today and then please come see it tonight later on when we preview the whole video so let's take a look I may not have a technical scientific background but I have one thing that the scientists don't have which is I know my backyard so conventional science happens outside of public view so it's kind of in this black box so most are up in the ivory tower and what's exciting about citizen science is that it brings it out into the open we as an environmental community are engaging with the physical world every day and you need tools to do that we needed to democratize that technology we need to make it lightweight we need to make it low-cost we needed to make it open source so that we could put that technology in the hands of everyday people so they go out and make those measurements where they live and where they breathe when you first hear about an environmental organization you mostly hear about planting trees gardens things like that you don't really think about things that are really going to affect you hey we're the air be more they'd hold it in their hand making sure not to cover the intake or the exhaust I just stand here we look at the world with forensic eyes and then we build what you can't see so the approach that we're really centered on puts humans and real issues at the center of the work and I think that's the really at the core of what open source is social value that underlies all of it it really refers to sort of the rights and responsibilities that anyone on the planet has to participate in making new discoveries so really awesome and a great story and you know code newbie founder Saran yep Eric good afternoon how y'all doing today oh that was pretty weak I think you could do better than that how y'all doing today wonderful much better I'm Saran I am the founder of code newbie we have the most supportive community of programmers and people learning to code this is my very first Red Hat summits I'm super pumped super excited to be here today I'm gonna give you a talk and I'm going to share with you the key to coding progress yes and in order to do that I'm gonna have to tell you a story so two years ago I was sitting in my hotel room and I was preparing for a big talk the next morning and usually the night before I give a big talk I'm super nervous I'm anxious I'm nauseous I'm wondering why I keep doing this to myself all the speakers backstage know exactly what I'm what I'm talking about and the night before my mom knows this so she almost always calls just to check in to see how I'm doing to see how I'm feeling and she called about midnight the night before and she said how are you how are you doing are you ready and I said you know what this time I feel really good I feel confident I think I'm gonna do a great job and the reason was because two months ago I'd already given that talk in fact just a few days prior they had published the video of that talk on YouTube and I got some really really good positive feedback I got feedback from emails and DMS and Twitter and I said man I know people really like this it's gonna be great in fact that video was the most viewed video of that conference and I said to my office said you know what let's see how many people loved my talk and still the good news is that 14 people liked it and a lot more people didn't and I saw this 8 hours before I'm supposed to give that exact same talk and I said mom I gotta call you back do you like how I did that to hang up the phone as if that's how cellphones work yeah and so I looked at this and I said oh my goodness clearly there's a huge disconnect I thought they were really liked they were I thought they were into it and this showed me that something was wrong what do you do what do you do when you're about to give that same talk in 8 hours how do you begin finding out what the problem is so you can fix it I have an idea let's read the comments you got to believe you gotta have some optimism come on I said let's read the comments because I'm sure we'll find some helpful feedback some constructive criticism some insights to help me figure out how to make this talk great so that didn't happen but I did find some really colorful language and some very creative ideas of what I could do with myself now there are some kids in the audience so I will not grace you with these comments but there was this one comment that did a really great job of capturing the sentiment of what everyone else was saying I can only show you the first part because the rest is not very family-friendly but it reads like this how do you talk about coding and not fake societal issues see the thing about that talk is it wasn't just a code talk it was a code and talk is about code and something else that talked touched on code and social justice I talked a lot about how the things that we build the way we build them affect real people and their problems and their struggles and that was absolutely not okay not okay we talk about code and code only not the social justice stuff it also talked about code and diversity yeah I think we all know the diversity is really about lowering the bar it forces us to talk about people and their issues and their problems in their history and we just don't do that okay absolutely inappropriate when it comes to a Tech Talk That Talk touched on code and feelings and feelings are squishy they're messy they're icky and a lot of us feel uncomfortable with feelings feelings have no place in technology no place in code we want to talk about code and code I want you to show me that API and when you show me that new framework that new tool that's gonna solve my problems that's all I care about I want to talk about code and give me some more code with it now I host a podcast called command line heroes it's an original podcast from Red Hat super excited about it if you haven't checked it out and totally should and what I love about this show as we talk about these really important moments and open swords these inflection points moments where we see progress we move forward and what I realized looking back at those episodes is all of those episodes have a code and something let's look at a few of those the first two episodes focused on the history of operating systems as a two-part episode part 1 and part 2 and there's lots of different ways we can talk about operating systems for these two episodes we started by talking about Windows and Mac OS and how these were two very powerful very popular operating systems but a lot of a lot of developers were frustrated with them they were closed you couldn't see inside you can see what it was doing and I the developer want to know what it's doing on my machine so we kind of had a little bit of a war one such developer who was very frustrated said I'm gonna go off and do my own thing my name is Linus this thing is Linux and I'm gonna rally all these other developers all these other people from all over the old to come together and build this new thing with me that is a code and moment in that case it was code and frustration it was a team of developers a world of developers literally old world of developers who said I'm frustrated I'm fed up I want something different and I'm gonna do something about it and what's really beautiful about frustration is it the sign of passion we're frustrated because we care because we care so much we love so deeply then we want to do something better next episode is the agile revolution this one was episode three now the agile revolution is a very very important moment in open-source and technology in general and this was in response to the way that we used to create products we used to give this huge stack of specs all these docs from the higher-ups and we'd take it and we go to our little corner and we lightly code and build and then a year with Pastor here's a pass a few years have passed and we'd finally burst forth with this new product and hope that users liked it and loved it and used it and I know something else will do that today it's okay no judgment now sometimes that worked and a lot of times it didn't but whether or not it actually worked it hurt it was painful these developers not enjoy this process so what happened a dozen developers got together and literally went off into their own and created something called the agile manifesto now this was another code and moment here it's code and anger these developers were so angry that they literally left civilization went off into a mountain to write the agile manifesto and what I love about this example is these developers did not work at the same company we're not on the same team they knew each other from different conferences and such but they really came from different survive and they agreed that they were so angry they were going to literally rewrite the way we created products next as an example DevOps tear down the wall this one is Episode four now this is a bit different because we're not talking about a piece of technology or even the way we code here we're talking about the way we work together the way that we collaborate and here we have our operations folks and our developers and we've created this new kind of weird place thing called DevOps and DevOps is interesting because we've gotten to a point where we have new tools new toys so that our developers can do a lot of the stuff that only the operations folks used to be able to do that thing that took days weeks months to set up I can do it with a slider it's kind of scary I can do it with a few buttons and here we have another code and moment and here that blink is fear for two reasons the operations focus is looking over the developer folks and thinking that was my job I used to be able to do that am I still valuable do I have a place in this future do I need to retrain there's also another fear which is those developers know what they're doing do they understand the security implications they appreciate how hard it is or something to scale and how to do that properly and I'm really interested in excited to see where we go with that where we take that emotion if we look at all of season one of the podcast we see that there's always a code and whether it's a code and frustration a code and anger or a code and fear it always boils down to code and feelings feelings are powerful in almost every single episode we see that that movement forward that progress is tied back to some type of Oshin and for a lot of us this is uncomfortable feelings make us feel weird and a lot of those YouTube commenters definitely do not like this whole feeling stuff don't be like those YouTube commenters there's one thing you take away from this whole talk let it be that don't be like these YouTube commenters feelings are incredibly powerful so the next time that you're working on a project you're having a conversation about a piece of software or a new piece of technology and you start to get it worked up you get angry you get frustrated maybe you get worried you get anxious you get scared I hope you recognize that feeling as a source of energy I hope you take that energy and you help us move forward I would take that to create the next inflection point that next step in the right direction feelings are your superpowers and I hope you East Coasters here as well and I'm still catching up on that sleep so I hope you guys are having a great experience also my name is Sarah I'm here from New York I have been a software developer for 17 years it's longer than some of the people on stage today I've been alive big thanks to the folks at Red Hat for letting us come and tell you a little bit about jewel box so without further ado I'm gonna do exactly that okay so today we're gonna do a few things first I'm gonna tell you why we built jewel BOTS and why we think it's a really important technology I'm gonna show you some amazing magic and then we're gonna have one of the jewel bus experts come as a special guest and talk to you more about the deep technology behind what we're building so show hands in the audience who here was under 18 years old when they started coding it's hard for me to see you guys yep look around I'd have to say at least 50% of you have your hands up all right keep your hand up if you were under 15 when you started coding I think more hands up just what is it I don't know how that mouth works but awesome okay great yeah a little of I think about half of you half of you have your hands up that's really neat I've done a bunch of informal polls on the internet about this I found that probably about two-thirds of professional coders were under 18 when they started coding I myself was 11 I was a homeschooled kid so a little weird I'm part of the generation and some of you maybe as well is the reason we became coders is because we were lonely not because we made a lot of money so I was 11 this is before the internet was a thing and we had these things called BBS's and you would call up someone else's computer in your town and you would hang out with people and chat with them and play role-playing games with them it didn't have to be your town but if it wasn't your mom would yell at you for a long distance fees and I got really excited about computers and coding because of the community that I found online okay so this is sometimes the most controversial part of this presentation I promised you that they dominate our lives in many ways even if you don't even if you don't even know a 9 to 14 year old girl even if you just see them on the street sometimes they are deciding what you and I do on a regular basis hear me out for a second here so who here knows who this guy is okay you don't have to raise your hands but I think most people know who this guy is right so this guy used to be this guy and then teenage girls were like I think this guy has some talent to him I think that he's got a future and now he's a huge celebrity today what about this guy just got his first Oscar you know just kind of starting out well this guy used to be this guy and I'm proud to tell you that I am one of the many girls that discovered him and decided this guy has a future all right raise your hand if you listen to Taylor Swift just kidding I won't make you do it but awesome that's great so Taylor Swift we listen to Taylor Swift because these girls discovered Taylor Swift it wasn't a 35 year old that was like this Taylor Swift is pretty neat no one cares what we think but even bigger than that these huge unicorns that all of us some of us work for some of us wish we invented these were discovered by young teenage girls no one is checking to see what apps were using they're finding new communities in these thin in these platforms and saying this is how I want to commune with my friends things like Instagram snapchat and musically all start with this demographic and then we get our cues from them if you don't know what musically is I promise you ask your nearest 9 to 14 year old friend if you don't do that you'll hear about it in a few years but this demographic their futures are all at risk everyone here knows how much the field of software development is growing and how important technical literacy is to the future of our youth however just 18% of computer science graduates are girls just 19% of AP computer science test takers and just 15% of Google's tech force identify as female so we decided to do something about that we were inspired by platforms like MySpace and Geocities things like Neopets and minecraft all places where kids find something they love and they're like okay to make this better all I have to do is learn how to code I can totally do that and so we wanted to do that so we talked to 200 girls we went to schools we sat down with them and we were like what makes you tick what are you excited about and what we heard from them over and over again is their friends their friends and their community are pivotal to them and this time in their lives so when we started talking to them about a smart friendship bracelet that's when they started really freaking out so we built Jewel BOTS and Jewel BOTS has an active online community where girls can work together share code that they've built and learn from each other help each other troubleshoot sometimes the way they work is when you are near your friends your bracelets light up the same color and you can use them to send secret messages to each other and you can also code them so you can say things like when all my swimming friends are together in the same room all of our bracelets should go rainbow colors which is really fun you can even build games jewel BOTS started shipping about a year and a half ago about after a lot of work and we are about to ship our 12,000 jewel bot we're in 38 city sorry 38 countries and we're just getting started okay so now it's time for the magic and I have an important question does anyone here want to be my friend pick me all right someone today Gary oh I don't have many friends that's awesome I'm so glad that we'll be friends okay it's awesome so we just need to pair our jewel BA okay okay and in order to do that we're gonna hold the magic button in the middle down for two seconds so one locomotive two locomotive great and then we got a white flashing I'm gonna do yours again I did it wrong locomotive two locomotive it's we're adults we can't do it okay it's a good that are smart alright so now we get to pick our friendship color I'm gonna pick red hat red does that work for you sure okay great so now I just picked a red hat red and my jewel bot is saying alright Tim's jewel bot do you want to be my friend and imageable about it's like I'm thinking about it I think so okay now we're ready okay great so now we're red friends when we're together our bracelets are going to be red and I will send you a about a 30 meter hundred foot range but to tell you about the actual technology part I'm going to introduce is someone much more qualified than I am so Ellie is one of our jewel box ambassadors she's come on out Ellie [Applause] hello my name is le gallais I'm gonna show you how I got coding and then show you some coding in action I first started coding at a6 when my dad helped me code a game soon after I program form a code for Minecraft then my dad had shown me jo bot I keep coding because it helps people for instance for instance you could code auto crack to make it a lot smarter so it can help make people stay run faster but what about something more serious what if you could help answer 911 calls and give alerts before we start I have three main steps to share with you I often use these steps to encoding my jaw bot and continue to use some of these now step one read the instructions and in other words this means for Jabba to memorize the colors and positions a way to memorize these because it's tricky is to remember all the colors and positions you O type will be capital and remember that the positions are either short for north west south west north east and south east step to learn the basic codes when it comes to coding you need to work your way up step 3 discover feel free to discover once you mastered everything now let's get to coding let's use or let's first use combining lights so under void loop I'm going to put LED turn on single s/w and blue and before we make sure that this works we got to put LED LED okay now let's type this again LED dot turn on single now let's do SW green now we have our first sketch so let's explain what this means led LED is a function that to control the LED lights LED turn on single SW blue tells that SW light to turn blue and green flashes so quickly with the blue it creates aqua now let's do another code lets you i'm going to use a more advanced command to make a custom color using RGB let's use a soft pink using 255 105 and 180 now let's type this in the button press function so let's do LED led LED dot set light and now we can do let's do position 3 255 105 and 180 now let's explain what this means the first one stands for the position the three others stand for red green and blue our GPS can only go up to 255 but there are 256 levels but if you count the first one as zero then get 255 so let's first before we move on let's show how this works so this is it before and now let's turn it on to see how our aqua turned out now let's see how our RGB light turned out so we are looking for a soft pink so let's see how it looks think about how much the code you write can help people all around the world these are ideas are just the beginning of opening a new world in technology a fresh start is right afternoon red hat summit 2018 i'm femi holiday combs founder of hacker femme Oh I started coding when I was 8 when I was 9 I set up South London raspberry jam through crowdfunding to share my passion for coding with other young people who might not otherwise be exposed to tech since then I've run hundreds of coding and robot workshops across the UK and globally in 2017 I was awarded an inaugural legacy Diana award by their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Prince Harry my service and community we welcome young people who have autism or like me tract syndrome because coding linked me up to a wider community of like-minded people and I'm trying to do the same for those who might also benefit from this I also deliver workshops to corporate companies and public organizations whilst feeding back ideas and resources into my community work we like to cascade our knowledge and experience to other young coders so that they can benefit too we're learning new tech every day we're starting to use github to document and manage our coding projects we've no dread we're using the terminal and beginning to really appreciate Linux as we explore cybersecurity and blockchain it's been quite a journey from South London to the world-famous Tate Modern museum to Bangladesh to this my first trip to the States and soon to China where I hope to translate my microwave workshops into Mandarin on this journey I'm noticed it is increasingly important for young coders to have collaborative and community led initiatives and enterprise and career ready skills so my vision now is to run monthly meetups and in collaboration with business partners help a hundred young disadvantaged people to get jobs in the digital services in fact out of all the lessons I've learned from teaching young coders they all have one thing in common the power of open source and the importance of developing community and today I want to talk about three of those lessons the value of reaching out and collaborating the importance of partnering event price and the ability to self organize and persist which translated into English means having a can-do attitude getting stuff done when you reach out when you show curiosity you realize you're not alone in this diverse community no matter who you are and where you're from from coding with minecraft to meeting other young people with jams I found there are people like me doing things I like doing I get to connect with them that's where open-source comes to the fourth second the open source community is so vast then it crosses continents it's so immersed perspectives that it can take you to amazing places out of space even that's my code running on the International Space Station's Columbus module let's take a lesson and playing was an audio representation for the frequencies recorded in space my team developed Python code to measure and store frequency readings from the space station and that was down linked back to earth to my email box community works when you throw a dilemma a problem a tip the open source community comes back with answers when you give the community gives back tenfold that's how open source expands but in that vast starscape how do you know what to focus on there are so many problems to solve where do I start your world enterprice enterprise software is very good at solving problems what's the big problem how about helping the next generation be ready for the future I want to do more for the young coding community so I'm developing entrepreneurial business links to get that done this is a way to promote pathways to deal with future business problems whether in FinTech healthcare or supply chains a meeting the skill shortage it is a case for emerging in it's a case for investing in emerging communities and young change enablers throwing a wider net equates to being fully inclusive with a good representation of diversity you know under the shadow of the iconic show back in London there are pockets of deprivation where young people can't even get a job in a supermarket many of them are interested in tech in some way so my goal for the next three years is to encourage young people to become an active part of the coding community with open source we have the keys to unlock the potential for future innovation and technological development with young coders we have the people who have to face these problems working on them now troubleshooting being creative connecting with each other finding a community discovering their strengths along the way for me after running workshops in the community for a number of years when I returned from introducing coding to young street kids in Bangladesh I realized I had skills and experience so I set up my business hacker Famicom my first monetized fehmi's coding boot camp at Rice London Barclays Bank it was a sellout and a few weeks later shows my second I haven't looked back since but it works the opposite way - all the money raised enable me to buy robots for my community events and I was able to cascade my end price knowledge across to other young coders - when you focus on business problems you get active enthusiastic support from enterprise and then you can take on anything the support is great and we have tons of ideas but what does it really take to execute on those ideas to get things done can-do attitudes what open source needs you've seen it all this week we're all explorers ideator z' thinkers and doers open source needs people who can make the ideas happen get out there and see them through like I did setting up Safford and raspberry jam as an inclusive space to collaborate and learn together and that that led to organizing the young coders conference this was about organizing our own two-day event for our partners in industry to show they value young people and wanted to invest in our growth it doesn't stop there oh nice now I'm setting up monthly coding meetups and looking at ways to help other young people to access job opportunities in end price and digital services the underlying ethos remains the same in all I do promoting young people with the desire to explore collaborative problem-solving when coding digital making and building enterprise you fled having the confidence to define our journey and pathways always being inclusive always encouraging innovation and creativity being doers does more than get projects done makes us a pioneering force in the community dreaming and doing is how we will make exponential leaps my generation is standing on the shoulders of giants you the open-source pioneers and the technology you will built so I'd love to hear about your experiences who brought you into the open-source community who taught you as we go to upscale our efforts we
