>>mhm. Joining me now is Drew Schlussel, who is the senior director of product marketing at Wasabi. Hey, Drew. Good to see you again. Thanks for coming back in the Cube. >>They great to be here. Great to see you. >>All right, let's get into it. You know, Drew prior to the pandemic zero trust. Just like, kind of like a digital transformation. It was sort of a buzzword. And now it's become a real thing. Almost a mandate. What's what's Arby's take on zero trust? >>Uh, so absolutely right it was. It's been around a while, and now people are paying attention. Uh, sabes take is zero. Trust is is a good thing. Uh, you know, there are There are too many places right where the bad guys are getting in. And, you know, I think of zero. Trust is as kind of smashing laziness, right? It takes a little work, takes some planning, but, you know, done properly and using the right technology is using the right vendors. The rewards are of course, tremendous. Right? You you you can put to rest the fears of of ransomware and having your systems compromised. >>Well, and we're going to talk about this. But there's a lot of process and thinking involved and, you know, design in your zero trust. And you don't want to be wasting time messing with infrastructure. So we're gonna talk about that. There's a lot of discussion in the industry drew about a mutability and air gaps. I'd like you to share wasabi point of view on these topics. How do you approach it? And what makes wasabi different? >>Uh, so in terms of air gap and mutability, right, the beautiful thing about object storage, which is what we do all the time, is that it makes it that much easier. Right? To have a secure, immutable copy of your data someplace that's easy to access and, uh, doesn't cost you an arm and a leg to get your data back. Um, we're working with some of the best partners in the industry. Um, you know, we're working with folks like VM con vault Arc Marquis MSP 3. 60. Um, all folks who understand that you need to have multiple copies of your data. You need to have a copy stored offsite, and that copy needs to be immutable. And we can We can talk a little bit about what a mutability is and what it really means. >>You know, I want I wonder if you could talk a little bit more about with subi solution, because sometimes people don't understand. You actually are a cloud you're not building on other people's public clouds. And storage is the one use case where it actually makes sense to do that. Tell us a little bit more about those ABS approach and your solution. >>Yeah, I appreciate that. So there's there's definitely some misconception. We are our own cloud storage service. We don't run on top of anybody else, right? It's It's our systems. It's our software deployed globally, and we interoperate because we adhere to the S three standard. We interoperate with practically hundreds of applications, primarily in this case, right? We're talking about backup and recovery applications, and it's such a simple process, right? I mean, uh, just about everybody who's anybody in this business, protecting data has the ability now to, uh, access cloud storage. And so we've made it really simple. Uh, in many cases, you'll see wasabi, as you know, listed in the primary set of available vendors and, uh, you know, put in your private keys. Make sure that your account is locked down properly using, uh, let's say multi factor authentication, and you've got a great place to store copies of your data securely. >>I mean, we just heard from David friend. I did my math, right? He was talking about, you know, 1/6 the cost per terabyte per month, Maybe even a little better than that. How are you able to achieve such attractive economics? >>Yeah, So, you know, I can't remember how to translate my fractions into percentages, but I think we talk a lot about being 80% right, less expensive than the hyper scholars. And, you know, we talked about this at demon, right? There's there's some secret sauce there. Um, and, you know, we take a different approach to how we utilise the raw capacity to the effective capacity. And the fact is, we're also not having to run a few 100 other services, right? We do storage plain and simple all day, all the time, so we don't have to worry about overhead to support, you know, up and coming other services that are perhaps, uh, you know, going to be a loss leader right. Um, customers love it, right? They see the fact that their data is growing 40 80% year over year. They know they need to have some place to keep it secure. And, uh, you know, folks are flocking to us in droves. In fact, we're We're seeing a tremendous amount of migration, actually, right now, multiple petabytes being brought to Assad because folks have figured out that they can't afford to keep going with their current hyper scale or vendor. >>And the mutability is a feature of your product, right? What's the feature called? Can you dig? Double click on that a little bit? >>Yeah, Absolutely. Um So the determined s three is object lock. And what that means is your application will write an object to cloud storage, and it will define a retention period. Let's say a week. And for that period, that object is immutable. Untouchable cannot be altered in any way, shape or form. The application can't change it. The system administration can't change it with subi Can't change it. Okay, it is truly carved in stone, and this is something that it's been around for a while. But you're seeing a huge uptick in adoption and support for that feature by all the major vendors. And I named off a few earlier. Um, and the best part is that with the mutability comes some some sense of Well, it comes with not just a sense of security. It is security, right when you have data that cannot be altered by anybody. Um, even if the bad guys compromise your account, they steal your credentials, right? They can't take away the data. And that's a beautiful thing. A beautiful, beautiful thing. >>And you look like an s three bucket. Is that right? >>Yeah. Yeah. I mean, we're fully compatible with the S three a p I. So if you're using S three a p I based applications today, um, it's a very simple matter of just kind of redirecting where you want to store your data. Beautiful thing about backup and recovery, right? That's probably the simplest application. Simple being a relative term as far as lift and shift right, because that just means for your next full right point that it was subi retain your other falls for whatever 30 60 90 days. And then once you've kind of made that transition from vine divine. You know you're off and running with wasabi. >>I talked to my open about the allure of object storage. Historically, you know the simplicity of the get put syntax. But what about performance? Are you able to deliver performance? That's that's comparable to other storage formats. >>Oh, yeah, Absolutely. And we've got the We've got the performance numbers on the site to back that up. But I forgot to answer something earlier, Right? You said that the mutability is a feature, and I want to make it very clear that it is a feature, but it's an API request. Okay, So when you're talking about gets and puts and so forth, you know the comment you made earlier about being 80% more cost effectively, percent less expensive. Um, you know that API call, right? It's typically something that the other folks charge for, right? And I think we use the metaphor earlier about the refrigerator. Uh, but I'll use a different metaphor today, right? Uh, you can think of cloud storage as as a magical coffee cup, right? It gets as big as you want to store as much copy as you want. And the coffee is always warm right, And when you want to take a sip, there's no charge. You want to pop the lid and see how much coffee is in there. No charge. And that's an important thing. Because when you're talking about millions or billions of objects and you want to get a list of those objects or you want to get the status of the immutable settings for those objects anywhere else, it's going to cost you money to look at your data. We'll also be no additional charge, and that's part of the thing that sets us apart. >>Excellent. Thank you for that. So you mentioned some partners before. How do partners fit into the wasabi story? Where do you stop? Where do they pick up what you know, What do they bring? Can you give us maybe a paint a picture for us? Example or two? >>Sure. So again, we just do storage, right? That is our Our sole purpose in life is to, you know, to safely and securely store our customers' data. And so they're working with, uh, their application vendors. Whether it's, you know, active archive backup in recovery, uh, Iot surveillance, uh, media and entertainment workflows, right? Those systems already know how to manage the day to manage the metadata. They just need someplace to keep the data that is being worked on being stored and so forth. All right, so just like, uh, you know, plugging in a flash drive on your laptop, right? You literally can plug in wasabi as long as your applications support the AP getting started. Incredibly easy, right. We offer a 30 day trial, one terabyte, and most folks find that within, you know, probably a few hours of their P O. C. Right. Um, it's giving them everything they need in terms of performance, in terms of accessibility, in terms of sovereignty. I'm guessing you talked to, uh, you know, Dave friend earlier about data sovereignty, right. We're global company. All right, so there's got to be probably, you know, wherever you are in the world, someplace that will satisfy your sovereignty requirements, um, as well as your compliance requirements. >>We did talk about sovereignty, Drew. This is really what's interesting to me. A bit of an industry historian. When I look back to the early days of cloud, I remember the large storage companies, you know, they CEOs would say, We're going to have an answer for the cloud and they would go out. And for instance, I No. One bought competitor of carbonite and then couldn't figure out what to do with it. They couldn't figure out how to compete with the cloud, in part because they were afraid it was going to cannibalise their existing business. I think another part is because they just didn't have that imagination to develop an architecture that in a business model that could scale to see that you guys have done that is I love it because it brings competition. It brings innovation, and it helps lower clients cost and solve really nagging problems like, you know, uh, Ransomware, mutability and recovery. I'll give you the last word, Drew. >>Yeah, you're absolutely right. You know, the the on prem vendors. They're not going to go away anytime soon, right? There's always going to be a need for, you know, incredibly low latency high band with, you know, But, uh, you know, not all data is taught all the time. And by hot, I mean, you know, extremely hot. Uh, you know, uh, you know, let's take, uh, you know real time, Uh, analytics for maybe facial recognition, right, That requires sub millisecond type of processing. But once you've done that work right, you want to store that data for a long, long time, and, uh, you're gonna want to also tap back into it later. So, you know, other folks are telling you that, you know, you can go to these like cold, glacial type of tiered storage. Don't believe the hype. You're still going to pay way more for that than you would with just a wasabi like hot cloud storage system. And, you know, we don't compete with our partners, right? We complement you know what they're bringing to market in terms of the software vendors in terms of the hardware vendors were beautiful component for that hybrid cloud architecture. And I think folks are gravitating towards that. I think the cloud is kind of hitting a new gear, if you will, in terms of adoption and recognition for the security that they can achieve with it. >>All right, Drew, Thank you for that. Vishal Lall is here. He's the senior vice president and general manager for HP ES Green Lake Cloud Services Solutions. Michelle, good to see you again. >>Likewise. David, good to see you. It was about a year ago that we met here. Or maybe nine months >>ago. That's right. Uh, September of last year. A new role >>for you. Is that right? I was starting that new role when I last met you. Yeah, but it's been nine months. Three quarters? What have you learned so far? I mean, it's been quite a right, right? I mean, when I was starting off, I had, you know, about three priorities we've executed on on all of them. So, I mean, if you remember back then they we talked about, you know, improving a cloud experience. We talked about data and analytics being a focus area and then building on the marketplace. I think you heard a lot of that over the last couple of days here. Right? So we've enhanced our cloud experience. We added a private cloud, which was the big announcement yesterday or day before yesterday that Antonio made so that's been I mean, we've been testing that with customers. Great feedback so far. Right? And we're super excited about that. And, uh, you know, uh, down there, the test drive section people are testing that. So we're getting really, really good feedback. Really good acceptance from customers on the data and Analytics side. We you know, we launched the S three connector. We also had the analytics platform. And then we launched data fabric as a service a couple of days ago, right, which is kind of like back into that hybrid world. And then on the marketplace side, we've added a tonne of partners going deep with them about 80 plus partners now different SVS. So again, I think, uh, great. I think we've accomplished a lot over the last three quarters or so lot more to be done. Though >>the marketplace is really interesting to us because it's a hallmark of cloud. You've got to have a market price. Talk about how that's evolving and what your vision is for market. Yes, >>you're exactly right. I mean, having a broad marketplace provides a full for the platform, right? It's a chicken and egg. You need both. You need a good platform on which a good marketplace can set, but the vice versa as well. And what we're doing two things there, Right? One Is we expanding coverage of the marketplace. So we're adding more SVS into the marketplace. But at the same time, we're adding more capabilities into the marketplace. So, for example, we just demoed earlier today quickly deploy capabilities, right? So we have an I S p in the marketplace, they're tested. They are, uh, the work with the solution. But now you can you can collect to deploy directly on our infrastructure over time, the lad, commerce capabilities, licencing capabilities, etcetera. But again, we are super excited about that capability because I think it's important from a customer perspective. >>I want to ask you about that, because that's again the marketplace will be the ultimate arbiter of value creation, ecosystem and marketplace. Go hand in hand. What's your vision for what a successful ecosystem looks like? What's your expectation now that Green Lake is up and running. I stay up and running, but like we've been following the announcement, it just gets better. It's up to the right. So we're anticipating an ecosystem surge. Yeah. What are you expecting? And what's your vision for? How the ecosystem is going to develop out? Yeah. I >>mean, I've been meeting with a lot of our partners over the last couple of days, and you're right, right? I mean, I think of them in three or four buckets right there. I s V s and the I S P is coming to two forms right there. Bigger solutions, right? I think of being Nutanix, right, Home wall, big, bigger solutions. And then they are smaller software packages. I think Mom would think about open source, right? So again, one of them is targeted to developers, the other to the I t. Tops. But that's kind of one bucket, right? I s P s, uh, the second is around the channel partners who take this to market and they're asking us, Hey, this is fantastic. Help us understand how we can help you take this to market. And I think the other bucket system indicators right. I met with a few today and they're all excited about. They're like, Hey, we have some tooling. We have the manage services capabilities. How can we take your cloud? Because they build great practise around extent around. Sorry. Aws around? Uh, sure. So they're like, how can we build a similar practise around Green Lake? So again, those are the big buckets. I would say. Yeah, >>that's a great answer. Great commentary. I want to just follow up on that real quick. You don't mind? So a couple things we're seeing observing I want to get your reaction to is with a i machine learning. And the promise of that vertical specialisation is creating unique opportunities on with these platforms. And the other one is the rise of the managed service provider because expertise are hard to come by. You want kubernetes? Good luck finding talent. So managed services seem to be exploding. How does that fit into the buckets? Or is it all three buckets or you guys enable that? How do you see that coming? And then the vertical piece? >>A really good question. What we're doing is through our software, we're trying to abstract a lot of the complexity of take communities, right? So we are actually off. We have actually automated a whole bunch of communities functionality in our software, and then we provide managed services around it with very little. I would say human labour associated with it is is software manage? But at the same time we are. What we are trying to do is make sure that we enable that same functionality to our partners. So a lot of it is software automation, but then they can wrap their services around it, and that way we can scale the business right. So again, our first principle is automated as much as we can to software right abstract complexity and then as needed, uh, at the Manus Services. >>So you get some functionality for HP to have it and then encourage the ecosystem to fill it in or replicated >>or replicated, right? I mean, I don't think it's either or it should be both right. We can provide many services or we should have our our partners provide manage services. That's how we scale the business. We are the end of the day. We are product and product company, right, and it can manifest itself and services. That discussion was consumed, but it's still I p based. So >>let's quantify, you know, some of that momentum. I think the last time you call your over $800 million now in a are are you gotta You're growing at triple digits. Uh, you got a big backlog. Forget the exact number. Uh, give us a I >>mean, the momentum is fantastic Day. Right. So we have about $7 billion in total contract value, Right? Significant. We have 1600 customers now. Unique customers are running Green Lake. We have, um, your triple dip growth year over year. So the last quarter, we had 100% growth year over year. So again, fantastic momentum. I mean, the other couple, like one other metric I would like to talk about is the, um the stickiness factor associated tension in our retention, right? As renewal's is running in, like, high nineties, right? So if you think about it, that's a reflection of the value proposition of, like, >>that's that's kind of on a unit basis, if you will. That's the number >>on the revenue basis on >>revenue basis. Okay? >>And the 1600 customers. He's talking about the size and actually big numbers. Must be large companies that are. They're >>both right. So I'll give you some examples, right? So I mean, there are large companies. They come from different industries. Different geography is we're seeing, like, the momentum across every single geo, every single industry. I mean, just to take some examples. BMW, for example. Uh, I mean, they're running the entire electrical electric car fleet data collection on data fabric on Green Lake, right? Texas Children's Health on the on the healthcare side. Right On the public sector side, I was with with Carl Hunt yesterday. He's the CEO of County of Essex, New Jersey. So they are running the entire operations on Green Lake. So just if you look at it, Barclays the financial sector, right? I mean, they're running 100,000 workloads of three legs. So if you just look at the scale large companies, small companies, public sector in India, we have Steel Authority of India, which is the largest steel producer there. So, you know, we're seeing it across multiple industries. Multiple geography is great. Great uptake. >>Yeah. We were talking yesterday on our wrap up kind of dissecting through the news. I want to ask you the question that we were riffing on and see if we can get some clarity on it. If I'm a customer, CI or C so or buyer HP have been working with you or your team for for years. What's the value proposition? Finish this sentence. I work with HPV because blank because green like, brings new value proposition. What is that? Fill in that blank for >>me. So I mean, as we, uh, talked with us speaking with customers, customers are looking at alternatives at all times, right? Sometimes there's other providers on premises, sometimes as public cloud. And, uh, as we look at it, uh, I mean, we have value propositions across both. Right. So from a public cloud perspective, some of the challenges that our customers cr around latency around, uh, post predictability, right? That variability cost is really kind of like a challenge. It's around compliance, right? Uh, things of that nature is not open systems, right? I mean, sometimes, you know, they feel locked into a cloud provider, especially when they're using proprietary services. So those are some of the things that we have solved for them as compared to kind of like, you know, the other on premises vendors. I would say the marketplace that we spoke about earlier is huge differentiator. We have this huge marketplace. Now that's developing. Uh, we have high levels of automation that we have built, right, which is, uh, you know, which tells you about the TCO that we can drive for the customers. What? The other thing that is really cool that be introduced in the public in the private cloud is fungible itty across infrastructure. Right? So basically on the same infrastructure you can run. Um, virtual machines, containers, bare metals, any application he wants, you can decommission and commission the infrastructure on the fly. So what it does, is it no matter where it is? Uh, on premises, right? Yeah, earlier. I mean, if you think about it, the infrastructure was dedicated for a certain application. Now we're basically we have basically made it compose herbal, right? And that way, what? Really? Uh, that doesnt increases utilisation so you can get increased utilisation. High automation. What drives lower tco. So you've got a >>horizontal basically platform now that handle a variety of work and >>and these were close. Can sit anywhere to your point, right? I mean, we could have a four node workload out in a manufacturing setting multiple racks in a data centre, and it's all run by the same cloud prints, same software train. So it's really extensive. >>And you can call on the resources that you need for that particular workload. >>Exactly what you need them exactly. Right. >>Excellent. Give you the last word kind of takeaways from Discover. And where when we talk, when we sit down and talk next year, it's about where do you want to be? >>I mean, you know, I think, as you probably saw from discovered, this is, like, very different. Antonio did a live demo of our product, right? Uh, visual school, right? I mean, we haven't done that in a while, so I mean, you started. It >>didn't die like Bill Gates and demos. No, >>no, no, no. I think, uh, so I think you'll see more of that from us. I mean, I'm focused on three things, right? I'm focused on the cloud experience we spoke about. So what we are doing now is making sure that we increase the time for that, uh, make it very, you know, um, attractive to different industries to certifications like HIPAA, etcetera. So that's kind of one focus. So I just drive harder at that adoption of that of the private out, right across different industries and different customer segments. The second is more on the data and analytics I spoke about. You will have more and more analytic capabilities that you'll see, um, building upon data fabric as a service. And this is a marketplace. So that's like it's very specific is the three focus areas were driving hard. All right, we'll be watching >>number two. Instrumentation is really keen >>in the marketplace to I mean, you mentioned Mongo. Some other data platforms that we're going to see here. That's going to be, I think. >>Hello and welcome today's cube presentation of eight of us startup showcase. I'm john for your host highlighting the hottest companies and devops data analytics and cloud management lisa martin and David want are here to kick it off. We've got a great program for you again. This is our, our new community event model where we're doing every quarter, we have every new episode, this is quarter three this year or episode three, season one of the hottest cloud startups and we're gonna be featured. Then we're gonna do a keynote package and then 15 countries will present their story, Go check them out and then have a closing keynote with a practitioner and we've got some great lineups, lisa Dave, great to see you. Thanks for joining me. >>Hey guys, >>great to be here. So David got to ask you, you know, back in events last night we're at the 14 it's event where they had the golf PGA championship with the cube Now we got the hybrid model, This is the new normal. We're in, we got these great companies were showcasing them. What's your take? >>Well, you're right. I mean, I think there's a combination of things. We're seeing some live shows. We saw what we did with at mobile world Congress. We did the show with AWS storage day where it was, we were at the spheres, there was no, there was a live audience, but they weren't there physically. It was just virtual and yeah, so, and I just got pained about reinvent. Hey Dave, you gotta make your flights. So I'm making my flights >>were gonna be at the amazon web services, public sector summit next week. At least a lot, a lot of cloud convergence going on here. We got many companies being featured here that we spoke with the Ceo and their top people cloud management, devops data, nelson security. Really cutting edge companies, >>yes, cutting edge companies who are all focused on acceleration. We've talked about the acceleration of digital transformation the last 18 months and we've seen a tremendous amount of acceleration in innovation with what these startups are doing. We've talked to like you said, there's, there's C suite, we've also talked to their customers about how they are innovating so quickly with this hybrid environment, this remote work and we've talked a lot about security in the last week or so. You mentioned that we were at Fortinet cybersecurity skills gap. What some of these companies are doing with automation for example, to help shorten that gap, which is a big opportunity >>for the job market. Great stuff. Dave so the format of this event, you're going to have a fireside chat with the practitioner, we'd like to end these programs with a great experienced practitioner cutting edge in data february. The beginning lisa are gonna be kicking off with of course Jeff bar to give us the update on what's going on AWS and then a special presentation from Emily Freeman who is the author of devops for dummies, she's introducing new content. The revolution in devops devops two point oh and of course jerry Chen from Greylock cube alumni is going to come on and talk about his new thesis castles in the cloud creating moats at cloud scale. They started with an on prem Hadoop system and then of course we all know what happened is S three essentially took the knees out from, from the on prem Hadoop market lowered costs, brought things into the cloud and what Hello Fresh is doing is they're transforming from that legacy Hadoop system into its running on AWS but into a data mess, you know, it's a passionate topic of mine. Hello Fresh was scaling they realized that they couldn't keep up so they had to rethink their entire data architecture and they built it around data mesh Clements key and christoph Soewandi gonna explain how they actually did that are on a journey or decentralized data >>measure it and your posts have been awesome on data measure. We get a lot of traction. Certainly you're breaking analysis for the folks watching check out David Landes, Breaking analysis every week, highlighting the cutting edge trends in tech Dave. Get your reaction to this castle and castles in the cloud where competitive advantages can be built in the cloud. We're seeing examples of that. But first I gotta ask you give us an update of what's going on. The ap and ecosystem has been an incredible uh, celebration these past couple weeks, >>so, so a lot of different things happening and the interesting thing to me is that as part of my job, I often think that I'm effectively living in the future because I get to see all this really cool stuff that we're building just a little bit before our customers get to, and so I'm always thinking okay, here I am now, and what's the world going to be like in a couple of weeks to a month or two when these launches? I'm working on actually get out the door and that, that's always really, really fun, just kind of getting that, that little edge into where we're going, but this year was a little interesting because we had to really significant birthdays, we had the 15 year anniversary of both EC two and S three and we're so focused on innovating and moving forward, that it's actually pretty rare for us at Aws to look back and say, wow, we've actually done all these amazing things in in the last 15 years, >>you know, it's kind of cool Jeff, if I may is is, you know, of course in the early days everybody said, well, a place for startup is a W. S and now the great thing about the startup showcases, we're seeing the startups that >>are >>very near, or some of them have even reached escape velocity, so they're not, they're not tiny little companies anymore, they're in their transforming their respective industries, >>they really are and I think that as they start ups grow, they really start to lean into the power of the cloud. They as they start to think, okay, we've we've got our basic infrastructure in place, we've got, we were serving data, we're serving up a few customers, everything is actually working pretty well for us. We've got our fundamental model proven out now, we can invest in publicity and marketing and scaling and but they don't have to think about what's happening behind the scenes. They just if they've got their auto scaling or if they're survivalists, the infrastructure simply grows to meet their demand and it's it's just a lot less things that they have to worry about. They can focus on the fun part of their business which is actually listening to customers and building up an awesome business >>Jeff as you guys are putting together all the big pre reinvented, knows a lot of stuff that goes on prior as well and they say all the big good stuff to reinvent. But you start to see some themes emerged this year. One of them is modernization of applications, the speed of application development in the cloud with the cloud scale devops personas, whatever persona you want to talk about but basically speed the speed of of the app developers where other departments have been slowing things down, I won't say name names, but security group and I t I mean I shouldn't have said that but only kidding but no but seriously people want in minutes and seconds now not days or weeks. You know whether it's policy. What are some of the trends that you're seeing around this this year as we get into some of the new stuff coming out >>So Dave customers really do want speed and for we've actually encapsulate this for a long time in amazon in what we call the bias for action leadership principle >>where >>we just need to jump in and move forward and and make things happen. A lot of customers look at that and they say yes this is great. We need to have the same bias fraction. Some do. Some are still trying to figure out exactly how to put it into play. And they absolutely for sure need to pay attention to security. They need to respect the past and make sure that whatever they're doing is in line with I. T. But they do want to move forward. And the interesting thing that I see time and time again is it's not simply about let's adopt a new technology. It's how do we >>how do we keep our workforce >>engaged? How do we make sure that they've got the right training? How do we bring our our I. T. Team along for this. Hopefully new and fun and exciting journey where they get to learn some interesting new technologies they've got all this very much accumulated business knowledge they still want to put to use, maybe they're a little bit apprehensive about something brand new and they hear about the cloud, but there by and large, they really want to move forward. They just need a little bit of >>help to make it happen >>real good guys. One of the things you're gonna hear today, we're talking about speed traditionally going fast. Oftentimes you meant you have to sacrifice some things on quality and what you're going to hear from some of the startups today is how they're addressing that to automation and modern devoPS technologies and sort of rethinking that whole application development approach. That's something I'm really excited to see organization is beginning to adopt so they don't have to make that tradeoff anymore. >>Yeah, I would >>never want to see someone >>sacrifice quality, >>but I do think that iterating very quickly and using the best of devoPS principles to be able to iterate incredibly quickly and get that first launch out there and then listen with both ears just >>as much >>as you can, Everything. You hear iterate really quickly to meet those needs in, in hours and days, not months, quarters or years. >>Great stuff. Chef and a lot of the companies were featuring here in the startup showcase represent that new kind of thinking, um, systems thinking as well as you know, the cloud scale and again and it's finally here, the revolution of deVOps is going to the next generation and uh, we're excited to have Emily Freeman who's going to come on and give a little preview for her new talk on this revolution. So Jeff, thank you for coming on, appreciate you sharing the update here on the cube. Happy >>to be. I'm actually really looking forward to hearing from Emily. >>Yeah, it's great. Great. Looking forward to the talk. Brand new Premier, Okay, uh, lisa martin, Emily Freeman is here. She's ready to come in and we're going to preview her lightning talk Emily. Um, thanks for coming on, we really appreciate you coming on really, this is about to talk around deVOPS next gen and I think lisa this is one of those things we've been, we've been discussing with all the companies. It's a new kind of thinking it's a revolution, it's a systems mindset, you're starting to see the connections there she is. Emily, Thanks for coming. I appreciate it. >>Thank you for having me. So your teaser video >>was amazing. Um, you know, that little secret radical idea, something completely different. Um, you gotta talk coming up, what's the premise behind this revolution, you know, these tying together architecture, development, automation deployment, operating altogether. >>Yes, well, we have traditionally always used the sclc, which is the software delivery life cycle. Um, and it is a straight linear process that has actually been around since the sixties, which is wild to me um, and really originated in manufacturing. Um, and as much as I love the Toyota production system and how much it has shown up in devops as a sort of inspiration on how to run things better. We are not making cars, we are making software and I think we have to use different approaches and create a sort of model that better reflects our modern software development process. >>It's a bold idea and looking forward to the talk and as motivation. I went into my basement and dusted off all my books from college in the 80s and the sea estimates it was waterfall. It was software development life cycle. They trained us to think this way and it came from the mainframe people. It was like, it's old school, like really, really old and it really hasn't been updated. Where's the motivation? I actually cloud is kind of converging everything together. We see that, but you kind of hit on this persona thing. Where did that come from this persona? Because you know, people want to put people in buckets release engineer. I mean, where's that motivation coming from? >>Yes, you're absolutely right that it came from the mainframes. I think, you know, waterfall is necessary when you're using a punch card or mag tape to load things onto a mainframe, but we don't exist in that world anymore. Thank goodness. And um, yes, so we, we use personas all the time in tech, you know, even to register, well not actually to register for this event, but a lot events. A lot of events, you have to click that drop down. Right. Are you a developer? Are you a manager, whatever? And the thing is personas are immutable in my opinion. I was a developer. I will always identify as a developer despite playing a lot of different roles and doing a lot of different jobs. Uh, and this can vary throughout the day. Right. You might have someone who has a title of software architect who ends up helping someone pair program or develop or test or deploy. Um, and so we wear a lot of hats day to day and I think our discussions around roles would be a better, um, certainly a better approach than personas >>lease. And I've been discussing with many of these companies around the roles and we're hearing from them directly and they're finding out that people have, they're mixing and matching on teams. So you're, you're an S R E on one team and you're doing something on another team where the workflows and the workloads defined the team formation. So this is a cultural discussion. >>It absolutely is. Yes. I think it is a cultural discussion and it really comes to the heart of devops, right? It's people process. And then tools deVOps has always been about culture and making sure that developers have all the tools they need to be productive and honestly happy. What good is all of this? If developing software isn't a joyful experience. Well, >>I got to ask you, I got you here obviously with server list and functions just starting to see this kind of this next gen. And we're gonna hear from jerry Chen, who's a Greylock VC who's going to talk about castles in the clouds, where he's discussing the moats that could be created with a competitive advantage in cloud scale. And I think he points to the snowflakes of the world. You're starting to see this new thing happening. This is devops 2.0, this is the revolution. Is this kind of where you see the same vision of your talk? >>Yes, so DeVOps created 2000 and 8, 2000 and nine, totally different ecosystem in the world we were living in, you know, we didn't have things like surveillance and containers, we didn't have this sort of default distributed nature, certainly not the cloud. Uh and so I'm very excited for jerry's talk. I'm curious to hear more about these moz. I think it's fascinating. Um but yeah, you're seeing different companies use different tools and processes to accelerate their delivery and that is the competitive advantage. How can we figure out how to utilize these tools in the most efficient way possible. >>Thank you for coming and giving us a preview. Let's now go to your lightning keynote talk. Fresh content. Premier of this revolution in Devops and the Freemans Talk, we'll go there now. >>Hi, I'm Emily Freeman, I'm the author of devops for dummies and the curator of 97 things every cloud engineer should know. I am thrilled to be here with you all today. I am really excited to share with you a kind of a wild idea, a complete re imagining of the S DLC and I want to be clear, I need your feedback. I want to know what you think of this. You can always find me on twitter at editing. Emily, most of my work centers around deVOps and I really can't overstate what an impact the concept of deVOPS has had on this industry in many ways it built on the foundation of Agile to become a default a standard we all reach for in our everyday work. When devops surfaced as an idea in 2008, the tech industry was in a vastly different space. AWS was an infancy offering only a handful of services. Azure and G C P didn't exist yet. The majority's majority of companies maintained their own infrastructure. Developers wrote code and relied on sys admins to deploy new code at scheduled intervals. Sometimes months apart, container technology hadn't been invented applications adhered to a monolithic architecture, databases were almost exclusively relational and serverless wasn't even a concept. Everything from the application to the engineers was centralized. Our current ecosystem couldn't be more different. Software is still hard, don't get me wrong, but we continue to find novel solutions to consistently difficult, persistent problems. Now, some of these end up being a sort of rebranding of old ideas, but others are a unique and clever take to abstracting complexity or automating toil or perhaps most important, rethinking challenging the very premises we have accepted as Cannon for years, if not decades. In the years since deVOps attempted to answer the critical conflict between developers and operations, engineers, deVOps has become a catch all term and there have been a number of derivative works. Devops has come to mean 5000 different things to 5000 different people. For some, it can be distilled to continuous integration and continuous delivery or C I C D. For others, it's simply deploying code more frequently, perhaps adding a smattering of tests for others. Still, its organizational, they've added a platform team, perhaps even a questionably named DEVOPS team or have created an engineering structure that focuses on a separation of concerns. Leaving feature teams to manage the development, deployment, security and maintenance of their siloed services, say, whatever the interpretation, what's important is that there isn't a universally accepted standard. Well, what deVOPS is or what it looks like an execution, it's a philosophy more than anything else. A framework people can utilize to configure and customize their specific circumstances to modern development practices. The characteristic of deVOPS that I think we can all agree on though, is that an attempted to capture the challenges of the entire software development process. It's that broad umbrella, that holistic view that I think we need to breathe life into again, The challenge we face is that DeVOps isn't increasingly outmoded solution to a previous problem developers now face. Cultural and technical challenge is far greater than how to more quickly deploy a monolithic application. Cloud native is the future the next collection of default development decisions and one the deVOPS story can't absorb in its current form. I believe the era of deVOPS is waning and in this moment as the sun sets on deVOPS, we have a unique opportunity to rethink rebuild free platform. Even now, I don't have a crystal ball. That would be very handy. I'm not completely certain with the next decade of tech looks like and I can't write this story alone. I need you but I have some ideas that can get the conversation started, I believe to build on what was we have to throw away assumptions that we've taken for granted all this time in order to move forward. We must first step back. Mhm. The software or systems development life cycle, what we call the S. D. L. C. has been in use since the 1960s and it's remained more or less the same since before color television and the touch tone phone. Over the last 60 or so odd years we've made tweaks, slight adjustments, massaged it. The stages or steps are always a little different with agile and deVOps we sort of looped it into a circle and then an infinity loop we've added pretty colors. But the sclc is more or less the same and it has become an assumption. We don't even think about it anymore, universally adopted constructs like the sclc have an unspoken permanence. They feel as if they have always been and always will be. I think the impact of that is even more potent. If you were born after a construct was popularized. Nearly everything around us is a construct, a model, an artifact of a human idea. The chair you're sitting in the desk, you work at the mug from which you drink coffee or sometimes wine, buildings, toilets, plumbing, roads, cars, art, computers, everything. The sclc is a remnant an artifact of a previous era and I think we should throw it away or perhaps more accurately replace it, replace it with something that better reflects the actual nature of our work. A linear, single threaded model designed for the manufacturer of material goods cannot possibly capture the distributed complexity of modern socio technical systems. It just can't. Mhm. And these two ideas aren't mutually exclusive that the sclc was industry changing, valuable and extraordinarily impactful and that it's time for something new. I believe we are strong enough to hold these two ideas at the same time, showing respect for the past while envisioning the future. Now, I don't know about you, I've never had a software project goes smoothly in one go. No matter how small. Even if I'm the only person working on it and committing directly to master software development is chaos. It's a study and entropy and it is not getting any more simple. The model with which we think and talk about software development must capture the multithreaded, non sequential nature of our work. It should embody the roles engineers take on and the considerations they make along the way. It should build on the foundations of agile and devops and represent the iterative nature of continuous innovation. Now, when I was thinking about this, I was inspired by ideas like extreme programming and the spiral model. I I wanted something that would have layers, threads, even a way of visually representing multiple processes happening in parallel. And what I settled on is the revolution model. I believe the visualization of revolution is capable of capturing the pivotal moments of any software scenario. And I'm going to dive into all the discrete elements. But I want to give you a moment to have a first impression, to absorb my idea. I call it revolution because well for one it revolves, it's circular shape reflects the continuous and iterative nature of our work, but also because it is revolutionary. I am challenging a 60 year old model that is embedded into our daily language. I don't expect Gartner to build a magic quadrant around this tomorrow, but that would be super cool. And you should call me my mission with. This is to challenge the status quo to create a model that I think more accurately reflects the complexity of modern cloud native software development. The revolution model is constructed of five concentric circles describing the critical roles of software development architect. Ng development, automating, deploying and operating intersecting each loop are six spokes that describe the production considerations every engineer has to consider throughout any engineering work and that's test, ability, secure ability, reliability, observe ability, flexibility and scalability. The considerations listed are not all encompassing. There are of course things not explicitly included. I figured if I put 20 spokes, some of us, including myself, might feel a little overwhelmed. So let's dive into each element in this model. We have long used personas as the default way to do divide audiences and tailor messages to group people. Every company in the world right now is repeating the mantra of developers, developers, developers but personas have always bugged me a bit because this approach typically either oversimplifies someone's career are needlessly complicated. Few people fit cleanly and completely into persona based buckets like developers and operations anymore. The lines have gotten fuzzy on the other hand, I don't think we need to specifically tailor messages as to call out the difference between a devops engineer and a release engineer or a security administrator versus a security engineer but perhaps most critically, I believe personas are immutable. A persona is wholly dependent on how someone identifies themselves. It's intrinsic not extrinsic. Their titles may change their jobs may differ, but they're probably still selecting the same persona on that ubiquitous drop down. We all have to choose from when registering for an event. Probably this one too. I I was a developer and I will always identify as a developer despite doing a ton of work in areas like devops and Ai Ops and Deverell in my heart. I'm a developer I think about problems from that perspective. First it influences my thinking and my approach roles are very different. Roles are temporary, inconsistent, constantly fluctuating. If I were an actress, the parts I would play would be lengthy and varied, but the persona I would identify as would remain an actress and artist lesbian. Your work isn't confined to a single set of skills. It may have been a decade ago, but it is not today in any given week or sprint, you may play the role of an architect. Thinking about how to design a feature or service, developer building out code or fixing a bug and on automation engineer, looking at how to improve manual processes. We often refer to as soil release engineer, deploying code to different environments or releasing it to customers or in operations. Engineer ensuring an application functions inconsistent expected ways and no matter what role we play. We have to consider a number of issues. The first is test ability. All software systems require testing to assure architects that designs work developers, the code works operators, that infrastructure is running as expected and engineers of all disciplines that code changes won't bring down the whole system testing in its many forms is what enables systems to be durable and have longevity. It's what reassures engineers that changes won't impact current functionality. A system without tests is a disaster waiting to happen, which is why test ability is first among equals at this particular roundtable. Security is everyone's responsibility. But if you understand how to design and execute secure systems, I struggle with this security incidents for the most part are high impact, low probability events. The really big disasters, the one that the ones that end up on the news and get us all free credit reporting for a year. They don't happen super frequently and then goodness because you know that there are endless small vulnerabilities lurking in our systems. Security is something we all know we should dedicate time to but often don't make time for. And let's be honest, it's hard and complicated and a little scary def sec apps. The first derivative of deVOPS asked engineers to move security left this approach. Mint security was a consideration early in the process, not something that would block release at the last moment. This is also the consideration under which I'm putting compliance and governance well not perfectly aligned. I figure all the things you have to call lawyers for should just live together. I'm kidding. But in all seriousness, these three concepts are really about risk management, identity, data, authorization. It doesn't really matter what specific issue you're speaking about, the question is who has access to what win and how and that is everyone's responsibility at every stage site reliability engineering or sorry, is a discipline job and approach for good reason. It is absolutely critical that applications and services work as expected. Most of the time. That said, availability is often mistakenly treated as a synonym for reliability. Instead, it's a single aspect of the concept if a system is available but customer data is inaccurate or out of sync. The system is not reliable, reliability has five key components, availability, latency, throughput. Fidelity and durability, reliability is the end result. But resiliency for me is the journey the action engineers can take to improve reliability, observe ability is the ability to have insight into an application or system. It's the combination of telemetry and monitoring and alerting available to engineers and leadership. There's an aspect of observe ability that overlaps with reliability, but the purpose of observe ability isn't just to maintain a reliable system though, that is of course important. It is the capacity for engineers working on a system to have visibility into the inner workings of that system. The concept of observe ability actually originates and linear dynamic systems. It's defined as how well internal states of a system can be understood based on information about its external outputs. If it is critical when companies move systems to the cloud or utilize managed services that they don't lose visibility and confidence in their systems. The shared responsibility model of cloud storage compute and managed services require that engineering teams be able to quickly be alerted to identify and remediate issues as they arise. Flexible systems are capable of adapting to meet the ever changing needs of the customer and the market segment, flexible code bases absorb new code smoothly. Embody a clean separation of concerns. Are partitioned into small components or classes and architected to enable the now as well as the next inflexible systems. Change dependencies are reduced or eliminated. Database schemas accommodate change well components, communicate via a standardized and well documented A. P. I. The only thing constant in our industry is change and every role we play, creating flexibility and solutions that can be flexible that will grow as the applications grow is absolutely critical. Finally, scalability scalability refers to more than a system's ability to scale for additional load. It implies growth scalability and the revolution model carries the continuous innovation of a team and the byproducts of that growth within a system. For me, scalability is the most human of the considerations. It requires each of us in our various roles to consider everyone around us, our customers who use the system or rely on its services, our colleagues current and future with whom we collaborate and even our future selves. Mhm. Software development isn't a straight line, nor is it a perfect loop. It is an ever changing complex dance. There are twirls and pivots and difficult spins forward and backward. Engineers move in parallel, creating truly magnificent pieces of art. We need a modern model for this modern era and I believe this is just the revolution to get us started. I was mesmerized. It was impressive. >>The revolution of devops and the creative element was a really nice surprise there. But I love what she's doing. She's challenging the status quo. If we've learned nothing in the last year and a half, We need to challenge the status quo. A model from the 1960s that is no longer linear. What she's doing is revolutionary. >>And we hear this all the time. All the cube interviews we do is that you're seeing the leaders, the SVP's of engineering or these departments where there's new new people coming in that are engineering or developers, they're playing multiple roles. It's almost a multidisciplinary aspect where you know, it's like going into in and out burger in the fryer later and then you're doing the grill, you're doing the cashier, people are changing roles or an architect, their test release all in one no longer departmental, slow siloed groups. >>She brought up a great point about persona is that we no longer fit into these buckets. That the changing roles. It's really the driver of how we should be looking at this. >>I think I'm really impressed, really bold idea, no brainer as far as I'm concerned, I think one of the things and then the comments were off the charts in a lot of young people come from discord servers. We had a good traction over there but they're all like learning. Then you have the experience, people saying this is definitely has happened and happening. The dominoes are falling and they're falling in the direction of modernization. That's the key trend speed. >>Absolutely with speed. But the way that Emily is presenting it is not in a brash bold, but it's in a way that makes great sense. The way that she creatively visually lined out what she was talking about Is amenable to the folks that have been doing this for since the 60s and the new folks now to really look at this from a different >>lens and I think she's a great setup on that lightning top of the 15 companies we got because you think about sis dig harness. I white sourced flamingo hacker one send out, I oh, okay. Thought spot rock set Sarah Ops ramp and Ops Monte cloud apps, sani all are doing modern stuff and we talked to them and they're all on this new wave, this monster wave coming. What's your observation when you talk to these companies? >>They are, it was great. I got to talk with eight of the 15 and the amount of acceleration of innovation that they've done in the last 18 months is phenomenal obviously with the power and the fuel and the brand reputation of aws but really what they're all facilitating cultural shift when we think of devoPS and the security folks. Um, there's a lot of work going on with ai to an automation to really kind of enabled to develop the develops folks to be in control of the process and not have to be security experts but ensuring that the security is baked in shifting >>left. We saw that the chat room was really active on the security side and one of the things I noticed was not just shift left but the other groups, the security groups and the theme of cultural, I won't say war but collision cultural shift that's happening between the groups is interesting because you have this new devops persona has been around Emily put it out for a while. But now it's going to the next level. There's new revolutions about a mindset, a systems mindset. It's a thinking and you start to see the new young companies coming out being funded by the gray locks of the world who are now like not going to be given the we lost the top three clouds one, everything. there's new business models and new technical architecture in the cloud and that's gonna be jerry Chen talk coming up next is going to be castles in the clouds because jerry chant always talked about moats, competitive advantage and how moats are key to success to guard the castle. And then we always joke, there's no more moz because the cloud has killed all the boats. But now the motor in the cloud, the castles are in the cloud, not on the ground. So very interesting thought provoking. But he's got data and if you look at the successful companies like the snowflakes of the world, you're starting to see these new formations of this new layer of innovation where companies are growing rapidly, 98 unicorns now in the cloud. Unbelievable, >>wow, that's a lot. One of the things you mentioned, there's competitive advantage and these startups are all fueled by that they know that there are other companies in the rear view mirror right behind them. If they're not able to work as quickly and as flexibly as a competitor, they have to have that speed that time to market that time to value. It was absolutely critical. And that's one of the things I think thematically that I saw along the eighth sort of that I talked to is that time to value is absolutely table stakes. >>Well, I'm looking forward to talking to jerry chan because we've talked on the queue before about this whole idea of What happens when winner takes most would mean the top 3, 4 cloud players. What happens? And we were talking about that and saying, if you have a model where an ecosystem can develop, what does that look like and back in 2013, 2014, 2015, no one really had an answer. Jerry was the only BC. He really nailed it with this castles in the cloud. He nailed the idea that this is going to happen. And so I think, you know, we'll look back at the tape or the videos from the cube, we'll find those cuts. But we were talking about this then we were pontificating and riffing on the fact that there's going to be new winners and they're gonna look different as Andy Jassy always says in the cube you have to be misunderstood if you're really going to make something happen. Most of the most successful companies are misunderstood. Not anymore. The cloud scales there. And that's what's exciting about all this. >>It is exciting that the scale is there, the appetite is there the appetite to challenge the status quo, which is right now in this economic and dynamic market that we're living in is there's nothing better. >>One of the things that's come up and and that's just real quick before we bring jerry in is automation has been insecurity, absolutely security's been in every conversation, but automation is now so hot in the sense of it's real and it's becoming part of all the design decisions. How can we automate can we automate faster where the keys to automation? Is that having the right data, What data is available? So I think the idea of automation and Ai are driving all the change and that's to me is what these new companies represent this modern error where AI is built into the outcome and the apps and all that infrastructure. So it's super exciting. Um, let's check in, we got jerry Chen line at least a great. We're gonna come back after jerry and then kick off the day. Let's bring in jerry Chen from Greylock is he here? Let's bring him in there. He is. >>Hey john good to see you. >>Hey, congratulations on an amazing talk and thesis on the castles on the cloud. Thanks for coming on. >>All right, Well thanks for reading it. Um, always were being put a piece of workout out either. Not sure what the responses, but it seemed to resonate with a bunch of developers, founders, investors and folks like yourself. So smart people seem to gravitate to us. So thank you very much. >>Well, one of the benefits of doing the Cube for 11 years, Jerry's we have videotape of many, many people talking about what the future will hold. You kind of are on this early, it wasn't called castles in the cloud, but you were all I was, we had many conversations were kind of connecting the dots in real time. But you've been on this for a while. It's great to see the work. I really think you nailed this. I think you're absolutely on point here. So let's get into it. What is castles in the cloud? New research to come out from Greylock that you spearheaded? It's collaborative effort, but you've got data behind it. Give a quick overview of what is castle the cloud, the new modes of competitive advantage for companies. >>Yeah, it's as a group project that our team put together but basically john the question is, how do you win in the cloud? Remember the conversation we had eight years ago when amazon re event was holy cow, Like can you compete with them? Like is it a winner? Take all? Winner take most And if it is winner take most, where are the white spaces for Some starts to to emerge and clearly the past eight years in the cloud this journey, we've seen big companies, data breaks, snowflakes, elastic Mongo data robot. And so um they spotted the question is, you know, why are the castles in the cloud? The big three cloud providers, Amazon google and Azure winning. You know, what advantage do they have? And then given their modes of scale network effects, how can you as a startup win? And so look, there are 500 plus services between all three cloud vendors, but there are like 500 plus um startups competing gets a cloud vendors and there's like almost 100 unicorn of private companies competing successfully against the cloud vendors, including public companies. So like Alaska, Mongo Snowflake. No data breaks. Not public yet. Hashtag or not public yet. These are some examples of the names that I think are winning and watch this space because you see more of these guys storm the castle if you will. >>Yeah. And you know one of the things that's a funny metaphor because it has many different implications. One, as we talk about security, the perimeter of the gates, the moats being on land. But now you're in the cloud, you have also different security paradigm. You have a different um, new kinds of services that are coming on board faster than ever before. Not just from the cloud players but From companies contributing into the ecosystem. So the combination of the big three making the market the main markets you, I think you call 31 markets that we know of that probably maybe more. And then you have this notion of a sub market, which means that there's like we used to call it white space back in the day, remember how many whites? Where's the white space? I mean if you're in the cloud, there's like a zillion white spaces. So talk about this sub market dynamic between markets and that are being enabled by the cloud players and how these sub markets play into it. >>Sure. So first, the first problem was what we did. We downloaded all the services for the big three clowns. Right? And you know what as recalls a database or database service like a document DB and amazon is like Cosmo dB and Azure. So first thing first is we had to like look at all three cloud providers and you? Re categorize all the services almost 500 Apples, Apples, Apples # one number two is you look at all these markets or sub markets and said, okay, how can we cluster these services into things that you know you and I can rock right. That's what amazon Azure and google think about. It is very different and the beauty of the cloud is this kind of fat long tail of services for developers. So instead of like oracle is a single database for all your needs. They're like 20 or 30 different databases from time series um analytics, databases. We're talking rocks at later today. Right. Um uh, document databases like Mongo search database like elastic. And so what happens is there's not one giant market like databases, there's a database market And 30, 40 sub markets that serve the needs developers. So the Great News is cloud has reduced the cost and create something that new for developers. Um also the good news is for a start up you can find plenty of white speeds solving a pain point, very specific to a different type of problem >>and you can sequence up to power law to this. I love the power of a metaphor, you know, used to be a very thin neck note no torso and then a long tail. But now as you're pointing out this expansion of the fat tail of services, but also there's big tam's and markets available at the top of the power law where you see coming like snowflake essentially take on the data warehousing market by basically sitting on amazon re factoring with new services and then getting a flywheel completely changing the economic unit economics completely changing the consumption model completely changing the value proposition >>literally you >>get Snowflake has created like a storm, create a hole, that mode or that castle wall against red shift. Then companies like rock set do your real time analytics is Russian right behind snowflakes saying, hey snowflake is great for data warehouse but it's not fast enough for real time analytics. Let me give you something new to your, to your parallel argument. Even the big optic snowflake have created kind of a wake behind them that created even more white space for Gaza rock set. So that's exciting for guys like me and >>you. And then also as we were talking about our last episode two or quarter two of our showcase. Um, from a VC came on, it's like the old shelf where you didn't know if a company's successful until they had to return the inventory now with cloud you if you're not successful, you know it right away. It's like there's no debate. Like, I mean you're either winning or not. This is like that's so instrumented so a company can have a good better mousetrap and win and fill the white space and then move up. >>It goes both ways. The cloud vendor, the big three amazon google and Azure for sure. They instrument their own class. They know john which ecosystem partners doing well in which ecosystems doing poorly and they hear from the customers exactly what they want. So it goes both ways they can weaponize that. And just as well as you started to weaponize that info >>and that's the big argument of do that snowflake still pays the amazon bills. They're still there. So again, repatriation comes back, That's a big conversation that's come up. What's your quick take on that? Because if you're gonna have a castle in the cloud, then you're gonna bring it back to land. I mean, what's that dynamic? Where do you see that compete? Because on one hand is innovation. The other ones maybe cost efficiency. Is that a growth indicator slow down? What's your view on the movement from and to the cloud? >>I think there's probably three forces you're finding here. One is the cost advantage in the scale advantage of cloud so that I think has been going for the past eight years, there's a repatriation movement for a certain subset of customers, I think for cost purposes makes sense. I think that's a tiny handful that believe they can actually run things better than a cloud. The third thing we're seeing around repatriation is not necessary against cloud, but you're gonna see more decentralized clouds and things pushed to the edge. Right? So you look at companies like Cloudflare Fastly or a company that we're investing in Cato networks. All ideas focus on secure access at the edge. And so I think that's not the repatriation of my own data center, which is kind of a disaggregated of cloud from one giant monolithic cloud, like AWS east or like a google region in europe to multiple smaller clouds for governance purposes, security purposes or legacy purposes. >>So I'm looking at my notes here, looking down on the screen here for this to read this because it's uh to cut and paste from your thesis on the cloud. The excellent cloud. The of the $38 billion invested this quarter. Um Ai and ml number one, um analytics. Number two, security number three. Actually, security number one. But you can see the bubbles here. So all those are data problems I need to ask you. I see data is hot data as intellectual property. How do you look at that? Because we've been reporting on this and we just started the cube conversation around workflows as intellectual property. If you have scale and your motives in the cloud. You could argue that data and the workflows around those data streams is intellectual property. It's a protocol >>I believe both are. And they just kind of go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. Right? So data for sure. I. P. So if you know people talk about days in the oil, the new resource. That's largely true because of powers a bunch. But the workflow to your point john is sticky because every company is a unique snowflake right? Like the process used to run the cube and your business different how we run our business. So if you can build a workflow that leverages the data, that's super sticky. So in terms of switching costs, if my work is very bespoke to your business, then I think that's competitive advantage. >>Well certainly your workflow is a lot different than the cube. You guys just a lot of billions of dollars in capital. We're talking to all the people out here jerry. Great to have you on final thought on your thesis. Where does it go from here? What's been the reaction? Uh No, you put it out there. Great love the restart. Think you're on point on this one. Where did we go from here? >>We have to follow pieces um in the near term one around, you know, deep diver on open source. So look out for that pretty soon and how that's been a powerful strategy a second. Is this kind of just aggregation of the cloud be a Blockchain and you know, decentralized apps, be edge applications. So that's in the near term two more pieces of, of deep dive we're doing. And then the goal here is to update this on a quarterly and annual basis. So we're getting submissions from founders that wanted to say, hey, you missed us or he screwed up here. We got the big cloud vendors saying, Hey jerry, we just lost his new things. So our goal here is to update this every single year and then probably do look back saying, okay, uh, where were we wrong? We're right. And then let's say the castle clouds 2022. We'll see the difference were the more unicorns were there more services were the IPO's happening. So look for some short term work from us on analytics, like around open source and clouds. And then next year we hope that all of this forward saying, Hey, you have two year, what's happening? What's changing? >>Great stuff and, and congratulations on the southern news. You guys put another half a billion dollars into early, early stage, which is your roots. Are you still doing a lot of great investments in a lot of unicorns. Congratulations that. Great luck on the team. Thanks for coming on and congratulations you nailed this one. I think I'm gonna look back and say that this is a pretty seminal piece of work here. Thanks for sharing. >>Thanks john thanks for having us. >>Okay. Okay. This is the cube here and 81 startup showcase. We're about to get going in on all the hot companies closing out the kino lisa uh, see jerry Chen cube alumni. He was right from day one. We've been riffing on this, but he nails it here. I think Greylock is lucky to have him as a general partner. He's done great deals, but I think he's hitting the next wave big. This is, this is huge. >>I was listening to you guys talking thinking if if you had a crystal ball back in 2013, some of the things Jerry saying now his narrative now, what did he have a crystal >>ball? He did. I mean he could be a cuBA host and I could be a venture capital. We were both right. I think so. We could have been, you know, doing that together now and all serious now. He was right. I mean, we talked off camera about who's the next amazon who's going to challenge amazon and Andy Jassy was quoted many times in the queue by saying, you know, he was surprised that it took so long for people to figure out what they were doing. Okay, jerry was that VM where he had visibility into the cloud. He saw amazon right away like we did like this is a winning formula and so he was really out front on this one. >>Well in the investments that they're making in these unicorns is exciting. They have this, this lens that they're able to see the opportunities there almost before anybody else can. And finding more white space where we didn't even know there was any. >>Yeah. And what's interesting about the report I'm gonna dig into and I want to get to him while he's on camera because it's a great report, but He says it's like 500 services I think Amazon has 5000. So how you define services as an interesting thing and a lot of amazon services that they have as your doesn't have and vice versa, they do call that out. So I find the report interesting. It's gonna be a feature game in the future between clouds the big three. They're gonna say we do this, you're starting to see the formation, Google's much more developer oriented. Amazon is much more stronger in the governance area with data obviously as he pointed out, they have such experience Microsoft, not so much their developer cloud and more office, not so much on the government's side. So that that's an indicator of my, my opinion of kind of where they rank. So including the number one is still amazon web services as your long second place, way behind google, right behind Azure. So we'll see how the horses come in, >>right. And it's also kind of speaks to the hybrid world in which we're living the hybrid multi cloud world in which many companies are living as companies to not just survive in the last year and a half, but to thrive and really have to become data companies and leverage that data as a competitive advantage to be able to unlock the value of it. And a lot of these startups that we talked to in the showcase are talking about how they're helping organizations unlock that data value. As jerry said, it is the new oil, it's the new gold. Not unless you can unlock that value faster than your competition. >>Yeah, well, I'm just super excited. We got a great day ahead of us with with all the cots startups. And then at the end day, Volonte is gonna interview, hello, fresh practitioners, We're gonna close it out every episode now, we're going to do with the closing practitioner. We try to get jpmorgan chase data measures. The hottest area right now in the enterprise data is new competitive advantage. We know that data workflows are now intellectual property. You're starting to see data really factoring into these applications now as a key aspect of the competitive advantage and the value creation. So companies that are smart are investing heavily in that and the ones that are kind of slow on the uptake are lagging the market and just trying to figure it out. So you start to see that transition and you're starting to see people fall away now from the fact that they're not gonna make it right, You're starting to, you know, you can look at look at any happens saying how much ai is really in there. Real ai what's their data strategy and you almost squint through that and go, okay, that's gonna be losing application. >>Well the winners are making it a board level conversation >>And security isn't built in. However, on Lee. 37% have been successful in We ask ourselves, Why is that and believe it or not, Ah, lot of customers tell us that they struggled with live in defining what being data driven it even means, and in particular aligning that definition between the business and the technology stakeholders. Let's talk a little bit. Let's look at our own definition. A data driven organization is an organization that harnesses data is an asset. The drive sustained innovation and create actionable insights. The super charge, the experience of their customers so they demand more. Let's focus on a few things here. One is data is an asset. Data is very much like a product needs to evolve sustained innovation. It's not just innovation innovation, it's sustained. We need to continuously innovate when it comes to data actionable insights. It's not just interesting insights these air actionable that the business can take and act upon, and obviously the actual experience we. Whether whether the customers are internal or external, we want them to request Mawr insights and as such, drive mawr innovation, and we call this the for the flywheel. We use the flywheel metaphor here where we created that data set. Okay, Our first product. Any focused on a specific use case? We build an initial NDP around that we provided with that with our customers, internal or external. They provide feedback, the request, more features. They want mawr insights that enables us to learn bringing more data and reach that actual data. And again we create MAWR insights. And as the flywheel spins faster, we improve on operational efficiencies, supporting greater data richness, and we reduce the cost of experimentation and legacy environments were never built for this kind of agility. In many cases, customers have struggled to keep momentum in their fleet, flywheel in particular around operational efficiency and experimentation. This is where Richie fits in and helps customer make the transition to a true data driven organization. Red Shift is the most widely used data warehouse with tens of thousands of customers. It allows you to analyze all your data. It is the only cloud data warehouse that sits, allows you to analyze data that sits in your data lake on Amazon, a street with no loading duplication or CTL required. It is also allows you to scale with the business with its hybrid architectures it also accelerates performance. It's a shared storage that provides the ability to scale toe unlimited concurrency. While the UN instant storage provides low late and say access to data it also provides three. Key asks that customers consistently tell us that matter the most when it comes to cost. One is usage based pricing Instead of license based pricing. Great value as you scale your data warehouse using, for example, reserved instances they can save up to 75% compared to on the mind demand prices. And as your data grows, infrequently accessed data can be stored. Cost effectively in S three encouraged through Amazon spectrum, and the third aspect is predictable. Month to month spend with no hitting charges and surprises. Unlike and unlike other cloud data warehouses, where you need premium versions for additional enterprise capabilities. Wretched spicing include building security compression and data transfer. >>Great Thanks. Scout um, eso. As you can see, everybody wins with the cloud data warehouses. Um, there's this evolution of movement of users and data and organizations to get value with these cloud data warehouses. And the key is the data has to be accessible by the users, and this data and the ability to make business decisions on the data. It ranges from users on the front line all the way up to the boardroom. So while we've seen this evolution to the Cloud Data Warehouse, as you can see from the statistic from Forrester, we're still struggling with how much of that data actually gets used for analytics. And so what is holding us back? One of the main reasons is old technology really trying to work with today's modern cloud data warehouses? They weren't built for it. So you run into issues of trying to do data replication, getting the data out of the cloud data warehouse. You can do analysis and then maintaining these middle layers of data so that you can access it quickly and get the answers you need. Another issue that's holding us back is this idea that you have to have your data in perfect shape with the perfect pipeline based on the exact dashboard unique. Um, this isn't true. Now, with Cloud data warehouse and the speed of important business data getting into those cloud data warehouses, you need a solution that allows you to access it right away without having everything to be perfect from the start, and I think this is a great opportunity for GAL and I have a little further discussion on what we're seeing in the marketplace. Um, one of the primary ones is like, What are the limiting factors, your Siegel of legacy technologies in the market when it comes to this cloud transformation we're talking about >>here? It's a great question, Michael and the variety of aspect when it comes to legacy, the other warehouses that are slowing down innovation for companies and businesses. I'll focus on 21 is performance right? We want faster insights. Companies want the ability to analyze MAWR data faster. And when it comes to on prem or legacy data warehouses, that's hard to achieve because the second aspect comes into display, which is the lack of flexibility, right. If you want to increase your capacity of your warehouse, you need to ensure request someone needs to go and bring an actual machine and install it and expand your data warehouse. When it comes to the cloud, it's literally a click of a button, which allows you to increase the capacity of your data warehouse and enable your internal and external users to perform analytics at scale and much faster. >>It falls right into the explanation you provided there, right as the speed of the data warehouses and the data gets faster and faster as it scales, older solutions aren't built toe leverage that, um, you know, they're either they're having to make technical, you know, technical cuts there, either looking at smaller amounts of data so that they can get to the data quicker. Um, or it's taking longer to get to the data when the data warehouse is ready, when it could just be live career to get the answers you need. And that's definitely an issue that we're seeing in the marketplace. I think the other one that you're looking at is things like governance, lineage, regulatory requirements. How is the cloud you know, making it easier? >>That's That's again an area where I think the cloud shines. Because AWS AWS scale allows significantly more investment in securing security policies and compliance, it allows customers. So, for example, Amazon redshift comes by default with suck 1 to 3 p. C. I. Aiso fared rampant HIPPA compliance, all of them out of the box and at our scale. We have the capacity to implement those by default for all of our customers and allow them to focus. Their very expensive, valuable ICTY resource is on actual applications that differentiate their business and transform the customer experience. >>That's a great point, gal. So we've talked about the, you know, limiting factors. Technology wise, we've mentioned things like governance. But what about the cultural aspect? Right? So what do you see? What do you see in team struggling in meeting? You know, their cloud data warehouse strategy today. >>And and that's true. One of the biggest challenges for large large organizations when they moved to the cloud is not about the technology. It's about people, process and culture, and we see differences between organizations that talk about moving to the cloud and ones that actually do it. And first of all, you wanna have senior leadership, drive and be aligned and committed to making the move to the cloud. But it's not just that you want. We see organizations sometimes Carol get paralyzed. If they can't figure out how to move each and every last work clothes, there's no need to boil the ocean, so we often work with organizations to find that iterative motion that relative process off identifying the use cases are date identifying workloads in migrating them one at a time and and through that allowed organization to grow its knowledge from a cloud perspective as well as adopt its tooling and learn about the new capabilities. >>And from an analytics perspective, we see the same right. You don't need a pixel perfect dashboard every single time to get value from your data. You don't need to wait until the data warehouse is perfect or the pipeline to the data warehouse is perfect. With today's technology, you should be able to look at the data in your cloud data warehouse immediately and get value from it. And that's the you know, that's that change that we're pushing and starting to see today. Thanks. God, that was That was really interesting. Um, you know, as we look through that, you know, this transformation we're seeing in analytics, um, isn't really that old? 20 years ago, data warehouses were primarily on Prem and the applications the B I tools used for analytics around them were on premise well, and so you saw things like applications like Salesforce. That live in the cloud. You start having to pull data from the cloud on Prem in order to do analytics with it. Um, you know, then we saw the shift about 10 years ago in the explosion of Cloud Data Warehouse Because of their scale, cost reduced, reduce shin reduction and speed. You know, we're seeing cloud data. Warehouses like Amazon Red Shift really take place, take hold of the marketplace and are the predominant ways of storing data moving forward. What we haven't seen is the B I tools catch up. And so when you have this new cloud data warehouse technology, you really need tools that were custom built for it to take advantage of it, to be able to query the cloud data warehouse directly and get results very quickly without having to worry about creating, you know, a middle layer of data or pipelines in order to manage it. And, you know, one company captures that really Well, um, chick fil A. I'm sure everybody has heard of is one of the largest food chains in America. And, you know, they made a huge investment in red shift and one of the purposes of that investment is they wanted to get access to the data mawr quickly, and they really wanted to give their business users, um, the ability to do some ad hoc analysis on the data that they were capturing. They found that with their older tools, the problems that they were finding was that all the data when they're trying to do this analysis was staying at the analyst level. So somebody needed to create a dashboard in order to share that data with a user. And if the user's requirements changed, the analysts were starting to become burdened with requests for changes and the time it took to reflect those changes. So they wanted to move to fought spot with embrace to connect to Red Shift so they could start giving business users that capability. Query the database right away. And with this, um, they were able to find, you know, very common things in in the supply chain analysis around the ability to figure out what store should get, what product that was selling better. The other part was they didn't have to wait for the data to get settled into some sort of repository or second level database. They were able to query it quickly. And then with that, they're able to make changes right in the red shift database that were then reflected to customers and the business users right away. So what they found from this is by adopting thought spot, they were actually able to arm business users with the ability to make decisions very quickly. And they cleared up the backlog that they were having and the delay with their analysts. And they're also putting their analysts toe work on different projects where they could get better value from. So when you look at the way we work with a cloud data warehouse, um, you have to think of thoughts about embrace as the tool that access that layer. The perfect analytic partner for the Cloud Data Warehouse. We will do the live query for the business user. You don't need to know how to script and sequel, um Thio access, you know, red shift. You can type the question that you want the answer to and thought spot will take care of that query. We will do the indexing so that the results come back faster for you and we will also do the analysis on. This is one of the things I wanted to cover, which is our spot i. Q. This is new for our ability to use this with embrace and our partners at Red Shift is now. We can give you the ability to do auto analysis to look at things like leading indicators, trends and anomalies. So to put this in perspective amount imagine somebody was doing forecasting for you know Q three in the western region. And they looked at how their stores were doing. And they saw that, you know, one store was performing well, Spot like, you might be able to look at that analysis and see if there's a leading product that is underperforming based on perhaps the last few quarters of data. And bring that up to the business user for analysis right away. They don't need to have to figure that out. And, um, you know, slice and dice to find that issue on their own. And then finally, all the work you do in data management and governance in your cloud data warehouse gets reflected in the results in embrace right away. So I've done a lot of talking about embrace, and I could do more, but I think it would be far better toe. Have Vika actually show you how the product works, Vika. >>Thanks, Michael. We learned a lot today about the power of leveraging your red shift data and thought spot. But now let me show you how it works. The coronavirus pandemic has presented extraordinary challenges for many businesses, and some industries have fared better than others. One industry that seems to weather the storm pretty well actually is streaming media. So companies like Netflix and who Lou. And in this demo, we're going to be looking at data from B to C marketing efforts. First streaming media company in 2020 lately, we've been running campaigns for comedy, drama, kids and family and reality content. Each of our campaigns last four weeks, and they're staggered on a weekly basis. Therefore, we always have four campaigns running, and we can focus on one campaign launch per >>week, >>and today we'll be digging into how our campaigns are performing. We'll be looking at things like impressions, conversions and users demographic data. So let's go ahead and look at that data. We'll see what we can learn from what's happened this year so far, and how we can apply those learnings to future decision making. As you can already see on the thoughts about homepage, I've created a few pin boards that I use for reporting purposes. The homepage also includes what others on my team and I have been looking at most recently. Now, before we dive into a search, will first take a look at how to make a direct connection to the customer database and red shift to save time. I've already pre built the connection Red Shift, but I'll show you how easy it is to make that connection in just three steps. So first we give the connection name and we select our connection type and was on red Shift. Then we enter our red shift credentials, and finally, we select the tables that we want to use Great now ready to start searching. So let's start in this data to get a better idea of how our marketing efforts have been affected either positively or negatively by this really challenging situation. When we think of ad based online marketing campaigns, we think of impressions, clicks and conversions. Let's >>look at those >>on a daily basis for our purposes. So all this data is available to us in Thought spot, and we can easily you search to create a nice line chart like this that shows US trends over the last few months and based on experience. We understand that we're going to have more clicks than impressions and more impressions and conversions. If we started the chart for a minute, we could see that while impressions appear to be pretty steady over the course of the year, clicks and especially conversions both get a nice boost in mid to late March, right around the time that pandemic related policies were being implemented. So right off the bat, we found something interesting, and we can come back to this now. There are few metrics that we're gonna focus on as we analyze our marketing data. Our overall goal is obviously to drive conversions, meaning that we bring new users into our streaming service. And in order to get a visitor to sign up in the first place, we need them to get into our sign up page. A compelling campaign is going to generate clicks, so if someone is interested in our ad, they're more likely to click on it, so we'll search for Click through Rape 5% and we'll look this up by campaign name. Now even compare all the campaigns that we've launched this year to see which have been most effective and bring visitors star site. And I mentioned earlier that we have four different types of campaign content, each one aligned with one of our most popular genres. So by adding campaign content, yeah, >>and I >>just want to see the top 10. I could limit my church. Just these top 10 campaigns automatically sorted by click through rate and assigned a color for each category so we could see right away that comedy and drama each of three of the top 10 campaigns by click through rate reality is, too, including the top spot and kids and family makes one appearance as well. Without spot. We know that any non technical user can ask a question and get an answer. They can explore the answer and ask another question. When you get an answer that you want to share, keep an eye on moving forward, you pin the answer to pin board. So the BBC Marketing Campaign Statistics PIN board gives us a solid overview of our campaign related activities and metrics throughout 2020. The visuals here keep us up to date on click through rate and cost per click, but also another really important metrics that conversions or cost proposition. Now it's important to our business that we evaluate the effectiveness of our spending. Let's do another search. We're going to look at how many new customers were getting so conversions and the price cost per acquisition that we're spending to get each of these by the campaign contact category. So >>this is a >>really telling chart. We can basically see how much each new users costing us, based on the content that they see prior to signing up to the service. Drama and reality users are actually relatively expensive compared to those who joined based on comedy and kids and family content that they saw. And if all the genres kids and family is actually giving us the best bang for our marketing >>buck. >>And that's good news because the genres providing the best value are also providing the most customers. We mentioned earlier that we actually saw a sizable uptick in conversions as stay at home policies were implemented across much of the country. So we're gonna remove cost per acquisition, and we're gonna take a daily look how our campaign content has trended over the years so far. Eso By doing this now, we can see a comparison of the different genres daily. Some campaigns have been more successful than others. Obviously, for example, kids and family contact has always fared pretty well Azaz comedy. But as we moved into the stay at home area of the line chart, we really saw these two genres begin to separate from the rest. And even here in June, as some states started to reopen, we're seeing that they're still trending up, and we're also seeing reality start to catch up around that time. And while the first pin board that we looked at included all sorts of campaign metrics, this is another PIN board that we've created so solely to focus on conversions. So not only can we see which campaigns drug significant conversions, we could also dig into the demographics of new users, like which campaigns and what content brought users from different parts of the country or from different age groups. And all this is just a quick search away without spot search directly on a red shift. Data Mhm. All right, Thank you. And back to you, Michael. >>Great. Thanks, Vika. That was excellent. Um, so as you can see, you can very quickly go from zero to search with thought Spot, um, connected to any cloud data warehouse. And I think it's important to understand that we mentioned it before. Not everything has to be perfect. In your doubt, in your cloud data warehouse, um, you can use thought spot as your initial for your initial tool. It's for investigatory purposes, A Z you can see here with star, Gento, imax and anthem. And a lot of these cases we were looking at billions of rows of data within minutes. And as you as your data warehouse maturity grows, you can start to add more and more thoughts about users to leverage the data and get better analysis from it. You can really start using thought spot for search right away and start getting analysis and start understanding the data through the automatic search analysis and the way that we query the data and we've seen customers do that. Chick fil a example that we talked about earlier is where they were able to use thoughts bought to notice an anomaly in the Cloud Data Warehouse linking between product and store. They were able to fix that very quickly. Then that gets reflected across all of the users because our product queries the Cloud Data Warehouse directly so you can get started right away without it having to be perfect. And >>that's awesome. And gal will leave a fun one for you. What can we look forward to from Amazon Red Shift next year? >>That's a great question. And you know, the team has been innovating extremely fast. We released more than 200 features in the last year and a half, and we continue innovating. Um, one thing that stands out is aqua, which is a innovative new technology. Um, in fact, lovely stands for Advanced Square Accelerator, and it allows customers to achieve performance that up to 10 times faster, uh, than what they've seen really outstanding and and the way we've achieved that is through a shift in paradigm in the actual technological implementation section. Uh, aqua is a new distributed and hardware accelerated processing layer, which effectively allows us to push down operations analytics operations like compression, encryption, filtering and aggregations to the storage there layer and allow the aqua nodes that are built with custom. AWS designed analytics processors to perform these operations faster than traditional soup use. And we no longer need to bring, you know, scan the data and bring it all the way to the computational notes were able to apply these these predicates filtering and encourage encryption and compression and aggregations at the storage level. And likewise is going to be available for every are a three, um, customer out of the box with no changes to come. Things in, well, customers that I speak to on day in, day out that we partner with, um, they're busy adapting their businesses to serve their customers. It's very much a game of ensuring the week and serve our customers to help their customers. Um, you know, the adaptation that's happening here is, um, trying to be more agile. Got to be more flexible. Um, a lot of pressure on data, a lot of demand on data and to deliver more value to the business, too. So that customers, >>as I said, we've been talking about data ops a lot. The idea being Dev Ops applied to the data pipeline, But talk about enterprise data automation. What is it to you. And how is it different from data off >>Dev Ops, you know, has been great for breaking down those silos between different roles functions and bring people together to collaborate. Andi, you know, we definitely see that those tools, those methodologies, those processes, that kind of thinking, um, lending itself to data with data is exciting. We look to do is build on top of that when data automation, it's the it's the nuts and bolts of the the algorithms, the models behind machine learning that the functions. That's where we investors, our r and d on bringing that in to build on top of the the methods, the ways of thinking that break down those silos on injecting that automation into the business processes that are going to drive a business to serve its customers. It's, um, a layer beyond Dev ops data ops. They can get to that point where well, I think about it is is the automation behind new dimension. We've come a long way in the last few years. Boy is, we started out with automating some of those simple, um, to codify, um, I have a high impact on organization across the data a cost effective way house. There's data related tasks that classify data on and a lot of our original pattern certain people value that were built up is is very much around that >>love to get into the tech a little bit in terms of how it works. And I think we have a graphic here that gets into that a little bit. So, guys, if you bring that up, >>sure. I mean right there in the middle that the heart of what we do it is, you know, the intellectual property now that we've built up over time that takes from Hacha genius data sources. Your Oracle Relational database. Short your mainframe. It's a lay and increasingly AP eyes and devices that produce data and that creates the ability to automatically discover that data. Classify that data after it's classified. Them have the ability to form relationships across those different source systems, silos, different lines of business. And once we've automated that that we can start to do some cool things that just puts of contact and meaning around that data. So it's moving it now from bringing data driven on increasingly where we have really smile, right people in our customer organizations you want I do some of those advanced knowledge tasks data scientists and ah, yeah, quants in some of the banks that we work with, the the onus is on, then, putting everything we've done there with automation, pacifying it, relationship, understanding that equality, the policies that you can apply to that data. I'm putting it in context once you've got the ability to power. Okay, a professional is using data, um, to be able to put that data and contacts and search across the entire enterprise estate. Then then they can start to do some exciting things and piece together the the tapestry that fabric across that different system could be crm air P system such as s AP and some of the newer brown databases that we work with. Snowflake is a great well, if I look back maybe five years ago, we had prevalence of daily technologies at the cutting edge. Those are converging to some of the cloud platforms that we work with Google and AWS and I think very much is, as you said it, those manual attempts to try and grasp. But it is such a complex challenges scale quickly runs out of steam because once, once you've got your hat, once you've got your fingers on the details Oh, um, what's what's in your data state? It's changed, You know, you've onboard a new customer. You signed up a new partner. Um, customer has, you know, adopted a new product that you just Lawrence and there that that slew of data keeps coming. So it's keeping pace with that. The only answer really is is some form of automation >>you're working with AWS. You're working with Google, You got red hat. IBM is as partners. What is attracting those folks to your ecosystem and give us your thoughts on the importance of ecosystem? >>That's fundamental. So, I mean, when I caimans where you tell here is the CEO of one of the, um, trends that I wanted us CIO to be part of was being open, having an open architecture allowed one thing that was close to my heart, which is as a CEO, um, a c i o where you go, a budget vision on and you've already made investments into your organization, and some of those are pretty long term bets. They should be going out 5 10 years, sometimes with the CRM system training up your people, getting everybody working together around a common business platform. What I wanted to ensure is that we could openly like it using AP eyes that were available, the love that some investment on the cost that has already gone into managing in organizations I t. But business users to before. So part of the reason why we've been able to be successful with, um, the partners like Google AWS and increasingly, a number of technology players. That red hat mongo DB is another one where we're doing a lot of good work with, um and snowflake here is, um Is those investments have been made by the organizations that are our customers, and we want to make sure we're adding to that. And they're leveraging the value that they've already committed to. >>Yeah, and maybe you could give us some examples of the r A y and the business impact. >>Yeah, I mean, the r a y David is is built upon on three things that I mentioned is a combination off. You're leveraging the existing investment with the existing estate, whether that's on Microsoft Azure or AWS or Google, IBM, and I'm putting that to work because, yeah, the customers that we work with have had made those choices. On top of that, it's, um, is ensuring that we have got the automation that is working right down to the level off data, a column level or the file level we don't do with meta data. It is being very specific to be at the most granular level. So as we've grown our processes and on the automation, gasification tagging, applying policies from across different compliance and regulatory needs that an organization has to the data, everything that then happens downstream from that is ready to serve a business outcome now without hoping out which run those processes within hours of getting started And, um, Bill that picture, visualize that picture and bring it to life. You know, the PR Oh, I that's off the bat with finding data that should have been deleted data that was copies off on and being able to allow the architect whether it's we're working on GCB or a migration to any other clouds such as AWS or a multi cloud landscape right off the map. >>A. She's a senior vice president of enterprise Data Architecture at Webster Bank. Good to see you. Thanks for coming on. >>Nice to see you too. Yes. >>So let's let's start with Let's start with Webster Bank. You guys are kind of a regional. I think New York, New England, uh, leave headquartered out of Connecticut, but tell us a little bit about the >>bank. Yeah, Webster Bank is regional, Boston. And that again in New York, Um, very focused on in Westchester and Fairfield County. Um, they're a really highly rated bank regional bank for this area. They, um, hold, um, quite a few awards for the area for being supportive for the community. And, um, are really moving forward. Technology lives. Currently, today we have, ah, a small group that is just working toward moving into a more futuristic, more data driven data warehouse. That's our first item. And then the other item is to drive new revenue by anticipating what customers do when they go to the bank or when they log into there to be able to give them the best offer. The only way to do that is you have timely, accurate, complete data on the customer and what's really a great value on off something to offer that >>at the top level, what were some of what are some of the key business drivers there catalyzing your desire for change >>the ability to give the customer what they need at the time when they need it? And what I mean by that is that we have, um, customer interactions and multiple weights, right? And I want to be able for the customer, too. Walk into a bank, um, or online and see the same the same format and being able to have the same feel, the same look and also to be able to offer them the next best offer for them. >>Part of it is really the cycle time, the end end cycle, time that you're pressing. And then there's if I understand it, residual benefits that are pretty substantial from a revenue opportunity >>exactly. It's drive new customers, Teoh new opportunities. It's enhanced the risk, and it's to optimize the banking process and then obviously, to create new business. Um, and the only way we're going to be able to do that is that we have the ability to look at the data right when the customer walks in the door or right when they open up their app. >>Do you see the potential to increase the data sources and hence the quality of the data? Or is that sort of premature? >>Oh, no. Um, exactly. Right. So right now we ingest a lot of flat files and from our mainframe type of runnin system that we've had for quite a few years. But now that we're moving to the cloud and off Prem and on France, you know, moving off Prem into, like, an s three bucket Where that data king, we can process that data and get that data faster by using real time tools to move that data into a place where, like, snowflake Good, um, utilize that data or we can give it out to our market. The data scientists are out in the lines of business right now, which is great, cause I think that's where data science belongs. We should give them on, and that's what we're working towards now is giving them more self service, giving them the ability to access the data in a more robust way. And it's a single source of truth. So they're not pulling the data down into their own like tableau dashboards and then pushing the data back out. I have eight engineers, data architects, they database administrators, right, um, and then data traditional data forwarding people, Um, and because some customers that I have that our business customers lines of business, they want to just subscribe to a report. They don't want to go out and do any data science work. Um, and we still have to provide that. So we still want to provide them some kind of read regiment that they wake up in the morning and they open up their email. And there's the report that they just drive, um, which is great. And it works out really well. And one of the things. This is why we purchase I o waas. I would have the ability to give the lines of business the ability to do search within the data, and we read the data flows and data redundancy and things like that and help me cleanup the data and also, um, to give it to the data. Analysts who say All right, they just asked me. They want this certain report and it used to take Okay, well, we're gonna four weeks, we're going to go. We're gonna look at the data, and then we'll come back and tell you what we dio. But now with Iot Tahoe, they're able to look at the data and then, in one or two days of being able to go back and say, Yes, we have data. This is where it is. This is where we found that this is the data flows that we've found also, which is what I call it is the birth of a column. It's where the calm was created and where it went live as a teenager. And then it went to, you know, die very archive. >>In researching Iot Tahoe, it seems like one of the strengths of their platform is the ability to visualize data the data structure, and actually dig into it. But also see it, um, and that speeds things up and gives everybody additional confidence. And then the other pieces essentially infusing ai or machine intelligence into the data pipeline is really how you're attacking automation, right? >>Exactly. So you're able to let's say that I have I have seven cause lines of business that are asking me questions. And one of the questions I'll ask me is, um, we want to know if this customer is okay to contact, right? And you know, there's different avenues so you can go online to go. Do not contact me. You can go to the bank And you could say, I don't want, um, email, but I'll take tests and I want, you know, phone calls. Um, all that information. So seven different lines of business asked me that question in different ways once said Okay to contact the other one says, You know, just for one to pray all these, you know, um, and each project before I got there used to be siloed. So one customer would be 100 hours for them to do that and analytical work, and then another cut. Another of analysts would do another 100 hours on the other project. Well, now I can do that all at once, and I can do those type of searches and say yes we already have that documentation. Here it is. And this is where you can find where the customer has said, You know, you don't want I don't want to get access from you by email, or I've subscribed to get emails from you. I'm using Iot typos eight automation right now to bring in the data and to start analyzing the data close to make sure that I'm not missing anything and that I'm not bringing over redundant data. Um, the data warehouse that I'm working off is not, um a It's an on prem. It's an oracle database. Um, and it's 15 years old, so it has extra data in it. It has, um, things that we don't need anymore. And Iot. Tahoe's helping me shake out that, um, extra data that does not need to be moved into my S three. So it's saving me money when I'm moving from offering on Prem. >>What's your vision or your your data driven organization? >>Um, I want for the bankers to be able to walk around with on iPad in their hands and be able to access data for that customer really fast and be able to give them the best deal that they can get. I want Webster to be right there on top, with being able to add new customers and to be able to serve our existing customers who had bank accounts. Since you were 12 years old there and now our, you know, multi. Whatever. Um, I want them to be able to have the best experience with our our bankers. >>That's really what I want is a banking customer. I want my bank to know who I am, anticipate my needs and create a great experience for me. And then let me go on with my life. And so that's a great story. Give us a little background CTO, You've got a deep, deep expertise in a lot of different areas. But what do we need to know? >>Well, David, I started my career basically at Microsoft, uh, where I started the information Security Cryptography group. They're the very 1st 1 that the company had, and that led to a career in information, security. And and, of course, as easy as you go along with information security data is the key element to be protected. Eso I always had my hands and data not naturally progressed into a roll out Iot talk was their CTO. >>What's the prescription for that automation journey and simplifying that migration to the cloud? >>Well, I think the first thing is understanding what you've got. So discover and cataloging your data and your applications. You know, I don't know what I have. I can't move it. I can't. I can't improve it. I can't build upon it. And I have to understand there's dependence. And so building that data catalog is the very first step What I got. Okay, >>so So we've done the audit. We know we've got what's what's next? Where do we go >>next? So the next thing is remediating that data you know, where do I have duplicate data? I may have often times in an organization. Uh, data will get duplicated. So somebody will take a snapshot of the data, you know, and then end up building a new application, which suddenly becomes dependent on that data. So it's not uncommon for an organization of 20 master instances of a customer, and you can see where that will go. And trying to keep all that stuff in sync becomes a nightmare all by itself. So you want to sort of understand where all your redundant data is? So when you go to the cloud, maybe you have an opportunity here to do you consolidate that that data, >>then what? You figure out what to get rid of our actually get rid of it. What's what's next? >>Yes, yes, that would be the next step. So figure out what you need. What, you don't need you Often times I've found that there's obsolete columns of data in your databases that you just don't need. Or maybe it's been superseded by another. You've got tables have been superseded by other tables in your database, so you got to kind of understand what's being used and what's not. And then from that, you can decide. I'm gonna leave this stuff behind or I'm gonna I'm gonna archive this stuff because I might need it for data retention where I'm just gonna delete it. You don't need it. All were >>plowing through your steps here. What's next on the >>journey? The next one is is in a nutshell. Preserve your data format. Don't. Don't, Don't. Don't boil the ocean here at music Cliche. You know, you you want to do a certain degree of lift and shift because you've got application dependencies on that data and the data format, the tables in which they sent the columns and the way they're named. So some degree, you are gonna be doing a lift and ship, but it's an intelligent lift and ship. The >>data lives in silos. So how do you kind of deal with that? Problem? Is that is that part of the journey? >>That's that's great pointed because you're right that the data silos happen because, you know, this business unit is start chartered with this task. Another business unit has this task and that's how you get those in stance creations of the same data occurring in multiple places. So you really want to is part of your cloud migration. You really want a plan where there's an opportunity to consolidate your data because that means it will be less to manage. Would be less data to secure, and it will be. It will have a smaller footprint, which means reduce costs. >>But maybe you could address data quality. Where does that fit in on the >>journey? That's that's a very important point, you know. First of all, you don't want to bring your legacy issues with U. S. As the point I made earlier. If you've got data quality issues, this is a good time to find those and and identify and remediate them. But that could be a laborious task, and you could probably accomplish. It will take a lot of work. So the opportunity used tools you and automate that process is really will help you find those outliers that >>what's next? I think we're through. I think I've counted six. What's the What's the lucky seven >>Lucky seven involved your business users. Really, When you think about it, you're your data is in silos, part of part of this migration to cloud as an opportunity to break down the silos. These silence that naturally occurs are the business. You, uh, you've got to break these cultural barriers that sometimes exists between business and say so. For example, I always advise there's an opportunity year to consolidate your sensitive data. Your P I. I personally identifiable information and and three different business units have the same source of truth From that, there's an opportunity to consolidate that into one. >>Well, great advice, Lester. The hashtag is data automated and we're going to really dig into data migrations, data migrations. They're risky, they're time consuming and they're expensive. Yousef con is here. He's the head of partnerships and alliances at I o ta ho coming again from London. Hey, good to see you, Seth. Thanks very much. >>Thank you. >>So let's set up the problem a little bit. And then I want to get into some of the data said that migration is a risky, time consuming, expensive. They're they're often times a blocker for organizations to really get value out of data. Why is that? >>I think I mean, all migrations have to start with knowing the facts about your data. Uh, and you can try and do this manually. But when you have an organization that may have been going for decades or longer, they will probably have a pretty large legacy data estate so that I have everything from on premise mainframes. They may have stuff which is probably in the cloud, but they probably have hundreds, if not thousands of applications and potentially hundreds of different data stores. >>So I want to dig into this migration and let's let's pull up graphic. It will talk about We'll talk about what a typical migration project looks like. So what you see, here it is. It's very detailed. I know it's a bit of an eye test, but let me call your attention to some of the key aspects of this, uh and then use if I want you to chime in. So at the top here, you see that area graph that's operational risk for a typical migration project, and you can see the timeline and the the milestones That Blue Bar is the time to test so you can see the second step. Data analysis. It's 24 weeks so very time consuming, and then let's not get dig into the stuff in the middle of the fine print. But there's some real good detail there, but go down the bottom. That's labor intensity in the in the bottom, and you can see hi is that sort of brown and and you could see a number of data analysis data staging data prep, the trial, the implementation post implementation fixtures, the transition to be a Blu, which I think is business as usual. >>The key thing is, when you don't understand your data upfront, it's very difficult to scope to set up a project because you go to business stakeholders and decision makers, and you say Okay, we want to migrate these data stores. We want to put them in the cloud most often, but actually, you probably don't know how much data is there. You don't necessarily know how many applications that relates to, you know, the relationships between the data. You don't know the flow of the basis of the direction in which the data is going between different data stores and tables. So you start from a position where you have pretty high risk and probably the area that risk you could be. Stack your project team of lots and lots of people to do the next phase, which is analysis. And so you set up a project which has got a pretty high cost. The big projects, more people, the heavy of governance, obviously on then there, then in the phase where they're trying to do lots and lots of manual analysis, um, manual processes, as we all know, on the layer of trying to relate data that's in different grocery stores relating individual tables and columns, very time consuming, expensive. If you're hiring in resource from consultants or systems integrators externally, you might need to buy or to use party tools. Aziz said earlier the people who understand some of those systems may have left a while ago. CEO even higher risks quite cost situation from the off on the same things that have developed through the project. Um, what are you doing with Ayatollah? Who is that? We're able to automate a lot of this process from the very beginning because we can do the initial data. Discovery run, for example, automatically you very quickly have an automated validator. A data met on the data flow has been generated automatically, much less time and effort and much less cars stopped. >>Yeah. And now let's bring up the the the same chart. But with a set of an automation injection in here and now. So you now see the sort of Cisco said accelerated by Iot, Tom. Okay, great. And we're gonna talk about this, but look, what happens to the operational risk. A dramatic reduction in that, That that graph and then look at the bars, the bars, those blue bars. You know, data analysis went from 24 weeks down to four weeks and then look at the labor intensity. The it was all these were high data analysis, data staging data prep trialling post implementation fixtures in transition to be a you all those went from high labor intensity. So we've now attacked that and gone to low labor intensity. Explain how that magic happened. >>I think that the example off a data catalog. So every large enterprise wants to have some kind of repository where they put all their understanding about their data in its price States catalog. If you like, imagine trying to do that manually, you need to go into every individual data store. You need a DB, a business analyst, reach data store. They need to do an extract of the data. But it on the table was individually they need to cross reference that with other data school, it stores and schemers and tables you probably with the mother of all Lock Excel spreadsheets. It would be a very, very difficult exercise to do. I mean, in fact, one of our reflections as we automate lots of data lots of these things is, um it accelerates the ability to water may, But in some cases, it also makes it possible for enterprise customers with legacy systems take banks, for example. There quite often end up staying on mainframe systems that they've had in place for decades. I'm not migrating away from them because they're not able to actually do the work of understanding the data, duplicating the data, deleting data isn't relevant and then confidently going forward to migrate. So they stay where they are with all the attendant problems assistance systems that are out of support. You know, you know, the biggest frustration for lots of them and the thing that they spend far too much time doing is trying to work out what the right data is on cleaning data, which really you don't want a highly paid thanks to scientists doing with their time. But if you sort out your data in the first place, get rid of duplication that sounds migrate to cloud store where things are really accessible. It's easy to build connections and to use native machine learning tools. You well, on the way up to the maturity card, you can start to use some of the more advanced applications >>massive opportunities not only for technology companies, but for those organizations that can apply technology for business. Everyone is the live Cube coverage for two days here in Atlanta, Georgia for instable fest. I'm John Furrier, My Coast stupid in with the Cube. Ted Julian, vice president, product management, formerly CEO. Resilient now part of an IBM company. Back to doing V P of product management. Again, you don't really ask. Welcome to welcome back to the Cube. Good to see you. It's a >>pleasure to be here. Thanks. >>So I see product management. Holistic thinking is the big discussion here. The thing that's coming out of this event is configuration management, a siloed point activity now, more of a platform. You're seeing more of a systems architecture thinking going into some of these platform discussion. Security certainly has been there. They're here now. A lot of pressure, the out of things built in with security but maintaining the onslaught of threats and landscape changes going on. That's what you do. >>It's rough out there. >>What what's going on? What are the key trends that customers should be aware of when thinking about configurations? Because automation can help. Yeah, maybe all use cases, but >>way need to do something and because customers definitely need help. The alerts that they're dealing with them both in the volume and the severity is like nothing we've ever seen before. At the same time we're talking about earlier, right, the regulatory impact also really big difference just in the last two or three years. Huge skills, gap shortage also a critical problem. People can't find enough people to do this work. That's very difficult to keep so clearly we need to do something different. And there's no doubt that orchestration and automation and configuration management, as a component of that is we've barely scratched the surface of the potential there. To help solve some of >>the open source is, is helping a lot of people now. Seeing the light first was cloud, the skeptics said. There's no security and cloud now. There is open source securities there, but still, proprietary systems have security. But the mayor may not be talented. Your point, so automation is an opportunity. How are companies dealing with the mishmash or the multi platform solutions that are out there >>at your right to ask the question it is driving, um, the problem in a big way. Years ago we tried this security automation within security, like in the early days of firewalls and the Web and stuff like that, and it didn't go well. Unintended consequences. But think two things have changed. The environments changed, which has raised the stakes for the need to be able to do this stuff to a whole different level. But at the same time, the technology matured enormously. There's been multiple platforms shifts since then, and so security teams. They're both kind of desperate for a better solution, but also better options now than they had before. And so it's for this reason that we're starting to see people adopt orchestration and automation now in a way that we didn't see in the last time around. >>But the thing is that we were hearing here is that people are trying to automate the same things and some of these holes in the infrastructure, whether it's an S three bucket, this is basic stuff. This is not rocket science. Yeah, so on these known use cases, this makes total sense that a playbook or automation could help kind of feel those holes. >>We talk about it as a journey, you know? And I don't think any two organizations journey is the same, nor does it really even need to be the same. So we've seen some customers, for example, take the approach of what's a high volume type of incident that we deal with. And if we could apply orchestration and automation, they were gonna get great our eye right? We see 4000 phishing attacks every month or what have you. And that's certainly one way to do it. Yeah, but those other times with one, >>though, I have to go >>into that point. There's other people that are like, you know, gathering forensics on an end point right now. Incredibly manual process. We need to be able to do that globally. Do we do it every day? No, we don't. But if we could automate that and get those results back in more like a couple hours, as opposed to two days, because the guy we need in Sweden is out of the office or whatever, that could mean the difference between ah, low level incident were able to contain and something that goes global. And so that's the use case we wanna chase, so I don't think there's a right or wrong answer. >>Depends on the environment. Ah, whole host of the whole thing about security is no general purpose software anymore. You have to really make it custom because every environments different. >>I mean, gosh, you guys Aaron Arcee, right? It's nuts. There's thousands of vendors. I mean, there's hundreds of vendors that are really products. They're not the features masquerading as products that are masquerading as companies. But there's a reason why that's been the case, and it's because the risk is so high. >>The desperation to >>yes, exactly good word choice. Yeah. >>So what? One of the things that reminded me of security is this morning hearing about, you know, J P. Morgan going through the transformation from the ticketing system. Tau wait to make a great case study two. I need to be able to automate things. So, you know, we know that response time is so critically important in the security area. So tell us how that meshes together from security and automation toe be able to response, and you know, whether it be patching or, you know, responding to an attack, >>there's huge opportunity gains there on. We've seen customers do some really remarkable things that start with what you're discussing, which is if we could automate that fishing process to a degree and we have 4000 of those a month and we're able to maybe shrink a response time by 80 some or more percent, which is what we've seen. That's a lot of savings right there. And you know, the meat and potatoes there is. You already have a fishing Neil Alias. Probably that that employees report those phishing attacks, too. But what if we just monitored that? We stripped those emails, stripped out the attachments, and we could automate all the manual grunt work that an analyst would otherwise do right? Is that and is there in execute a ble? Is that execute herbal? Unknown bad? What command and control servers is it talk to? Are those known bads those air 10 tabs That analyst could have opening their browser if we could automate all of that. So when they go into the case, it's all just sitting there for them. Huge time saver. >>It's the great proof point of the people plus machines. How do you make make sure that the people that when they get the information, they're not having to do too much grunt work. They get really focused on the things where their expertise in skill sets are needed, as opposed to just buried. You >>nailed it. I mean, automation is a great role to play, but it really is a subset of orchestration. It's when you can bring those two things together and really fuse the people process and technology via orchestration. That's when you get really game changing improvements. >>Talk about the relationship between you guys or silly, unanswerable. Where's the fit? What you guys doing together? Why year give a quick plug for what you working on? >>Yeah, absolutely. So just by working with customers, we kind of discovered that there was this growing groundswell of answerable use within our customer base. It was largely an I T, whereas that IBM resilient. We're selling mainly in a security. Um, and once we uncovered that were like, Oh my gosh, there's all these integrations that already exists. They're already using them for I t use cases on that side of the house, but a lot of the same work needs to be done as part of a security workflow. And so we built our integration where, literally you install that integration into resilient. And we have a visual workflow editor where you can define a sophisticated workflow. And what's that? Integration is in place. All of your instable integrations air there for you. You drag and drop them on near workflow. You can string them all together. I mean, it's really, really powerful. >>It's interesting. Stew and I and David Lattin Ovary Brother Q. Post. We got hundreds of events we see every conference. Everyone's going for the control plane layer. Don't control the data. I mean, it's aspiration, but it's You can't just say it. You gotta earn it. What's happening here is interesting in this country. Configuration management. Little sector is growing up because they control the plumbing, the control of the hardware, the piece parts right to the operating system. So the abstraction lee. It provides great value as it moves up the stack, no doubt, and this is where the impact is, and you guys are seeing it. So this dependency between or the interdependence between software glue that ties the core underpinnings together, whether it's observe ability data. It's not a silo, just context, which they're integrating together. This the collision course? Yeah. What's the impact gonna be here? What's your thesis on this? >>That's why there is such great synergy is because they are really were sort of the domain expertise Doreen experts on the security point of view and our ability to leverage that automation set of functions that answerable provides into this framework where you can define that workflow and all the rest that specific to some security use cases eyes just very, very complimentary to one another. >>This is a new kind of a 2.0 Kana infrastructure dynamic, where this enables program ability. Because if these are the control switch is on the gear and the equipment and the network routes, >>yeah, and where things get really interesting is when you do that in the context of ah, workflow and a case management system, which is part of what we provide, then you get a lot of really valuable metrics that are otherwise lost. If you're purely just at a point to point tool to to automation realm, and that allows you to look at organizational improvements because you're able to marry. Well, first of all, you can do things like better understand what kind of value those I t controls. Air providing you and the automation that you're able to deliver. But you can relate that to your people in your process as well. And so you can see, for example, that while we have two teams, they're doing that the ones in the day shift ones in the night shift. They have access to the same tool sets, but ones more effective than the other. First of all, you know that. But then, having known that you can now drill into that and figure out OK, why is the day shift better than the night shift? And you can say, Oh, well, they're doing things a little bit differently, maybe with how they're orchestrating this other team is, Or maybe they're not orchestrating it. All right? And you're having that. And then now you are able to knowledge share and, um improve that process to drive that continuous improvement. >>So this operational efficiency comes from breaking down these siloed exactly mentality data sets or staff? >>Yeah, and pairing. That was not just as I said, the IittIe automation aspect of weaken now do that 80% faster. But what about the people in the process aspect? We even bring that into the mix as well. You get that next limit layer of insight which kind of allows you to tap into another layer of productivity. >>So this is an alignment issue. This brings that back. The core cultural shift of Dev ups. This is the beginning of what operationalize ng Dev ops looks like. >>Yes. Yeah, >>people are working together. >>It's really, really well put. I mean, it gets back to how this question got started, which is what is this energy? And to me, this energy really is that you have these siloed all too often siloed functions of I t operations and security operations. And this integration between resilient and answerable is the glue that starts to pull those two things together to unlock everything we just talked about. >>Awesome. That's great. >>Yeah, well, you know, research has shown that you know, Dev Ops embracing, delivering and shipping code more frequently actually can improve security. Not You know what? We have to go through this separate process and slow everything down. So are you seeing what? What is that kind of end state organization look like? Oh, >>I mean, that's a huge transformation. And it's something that on the security field we've been struggling with for the longest time, because when we were in kind of a waterfall mode of sort of doing things I mean your timeframe of uncovering a security issue, addressing it in code code, getting deployed to a meaningful enough fashion and over a long enough time to get a benefit that could be years, right? But now that we're in this model, I mean, that could be so much, much more quickly obtained and obviously not only other great just General Roo I improvements that come from that, but your ability to shrink the threat window as a result of this as well as huge and that is crucial because all the same things that us, the good guys they're doing to be able to automate our defenses, the bad guys, they're doing the same thing in terms of how they're automating their attacks. And so we really have to. We have no choice. >>So, Ted, you were acquired by IBM. IBM made quite sizeable acquisition with Red Hat. Tell us what your IBM with danceable. How that should play out >>there is just enormous potential. And answerable is a big, big piece of it, without a doubt. And I think we're just scratching the tip of the iceberg for the benefits. They're just in the from resilience point of view. And, you know, we're not to stay in touch because we have some really interesting things coming down the pike in terms of next gen platforms and the role that that answer will complain those two and how those stretch across the security portfolio with an IBM more broadly and then even beyond that. >>Well, we want to keep in touch. We certainly have initiated Cube coverage this year on security. Cyber little bit going for a broader than the enterprise. Looking at the edge edges. You know about the perimeter. Being just disabled by this new service area takes one penetration lightbulb I p address. So again, organizing and configuring these policy based systems sounds like a configuration problem. Yeah, it is. This is where the software's gonna do it. Ted, Thanks for coming on. Sharing the insights. Any other updates on your front. What do you are most interested in what? Give us a quick update on what you're working on. >>Um, well, we're just getting started with the answerable stuff, so that's particularly notable here, but also kind of modern, modernizing our portfolio, and that really gets to the whole open shift side of the equation and the Red Hat acquisition as well, So not ready to announce anything yet. But some interesting things going on there that that kind of pull this all together and that serve as just one part of the foundation for the marriage between red at 9 p.m. and wanna sneak a value can bring the >>customers any sneak peek at all on the new direct.
