I've had the pleasure of spending this week with Lisa Martin and John Furrier. Thank you both so much for hanging out, for inviting me into the CUBE family. It's our first show together, it's been wonderful. >> Thank you. >> You nailed it. >> Oh thanks, sweetheart. >> Great job. Great job team, well done. Free wall to wall coverage, it's what we do. We stay till everyone else-- >> Savannah: 100 percent. >> Everyone else leaves, till they pull the plug. >> Lisa: Till they turn the lights out. We're still there. >> Literally. >> Literally last night. >> Still broadcasting. >> Whatever takes to get the stories and get 'em out there at scale. >> Yeah. >> Great time. >> 33. 33 different segments too. Very impressive. John, I'm curious, you're a trend watcher and you've been at every single KubeCon. >> Yep. >> What are the trends this year? Give us the breakdown. >> I think CNCF does this, it's a hard job to balance all the stakeholders. So one, congratulations to the CNCF for another great KubeCon and CloudNativeCon. It is really hard to balance bringing in the experts who, as time goes by, seven years we've been all of, as you said, you get experts, you get seniority, and people who can be mentors, 60% new people. You have vendors who are sponsoring and there's always people complaining and bitching and moaning. They want this, they want that. It's always hard and they always do a good job of balancing it. We're lucky that we get to scale the stories with CUBE and that's been great. We had some great stories here, but it's a great community and again, they're inclusive. As I've said before, we've talked about it. This year though is an inflection point in my opinion, because you're seeing the developer ecosystem growing so fast. It's global. You're seeing events pop up, you're seeing derivative events. CNCF is at the center point and they have to maintain the culture of developer experts, maintainers, while balancing the newbies. And that's going to be >> Savannah: Mm-hmm. really hard. And they've done a great job. We had a great conversation with them. So great job. And I think it's going to continue. I think the attendance metric is a little bit of a false positive. There's a lot of online people who didn't come to Detroit this year. And I think maybe the combination of the venue, the city, or just Covid preferences may not look good on paper, on the numbers 'cause it's not a major step up in attendance. It's still bigger, but the community, I think, is going to continue to grow. I'm bullish on it. >> Yeah, I mean at least we did see double the number of people that we had in Los Angeles. Very curious. I think Amsterdam, where we'll be next with CNCF in the spring, in April. I think that's actually going to be a better pulse check. We'll be in Europe, we'll see what's going on. >> John: Totally. >> I mean, who doesn't like Amsterdam in the springtime? Lisa, what have been some of your observations? >> Oh, so many observations. The evolution of the conference, the hallway track conversations really shifting towards adjusting to the enterprise. The enterprise momentum that we saw here as well. We had on the show, Ford. >> Savannah: Yes. We had MassMutual, we had ING, that was today. Home Depot is here. We are seeing all these big companies that we know and love, become software companies right before our eyes. >> Yeah. Well, and I think we forget that software powers our entire world. And so of course they're going to have to be here. So much running on Kubernetes. It's on-prem, it's at the edge, it's everywhere. It's exciting. Woo, I'm excited. John, what do you think is the number one story? This is your question. I love asking you this question. What is the number one story out KubeCon? >> Well, I think the top story is a combination of two things. One is the evolution of Cloud Native. We're starting to see web assembly. That's a big hyped up area. It got a lot of attention. >> Savannah: Yeah. That's kind of teething out the future. >> Savannah: Rightfully so. The future of this kind of lightweight. You got the heavy duty VMs, you got Kubernetes and containers, and now this web assembly, shows a trajectory of apps, server-like environment. And then the big story is security. Software supply chain is, to me, was the number one consistent theme. At almost all the interviews, in the containers, and the workflows, >> Savannah: Very hot. software supply chain is real. The CD Foundation mentioned >> Savannah: Mm-hmm. >> they had 16,000 vulnerabilities identified in their code base. They were going to automate that. So again, >> Savannah: That was wild. >> That's the top story. The growth of open source exposes potential vulnerabilities with security. So software supply chain gets my vote. >> Did you hear anything that surprised you? You guys did this great preview of what you thought we were going to hear and see and feel and touch at KubeCon, CloudNativeCon 2022. You talked about, for example, the, you know, healthcare financial services being early adopters of this. Anything surprise either one of you in terms of what you predicted versus what we saw? Savannah, let's start with you. >> You know what really surprised me, and this is ironic, so I'm a community gal by trade. But I was really just impressed by the energy that everyone brought here and the desire to help. The thing about the open source community that always strikes me is, I mean 187 different countries participating. You've got, I believe it's something like 175,000 people contributing to the 140 projects plus that CNCF is working on. But that culture of collaboration extends far beyond just the CNCF projects. Everyone here is keen to help each other. We had the conversation just before about the teaching and the learnings that are going on here. They brought in Detroit's students to come and learn, which is just the most heartwarming story out of this entire thing. And I think it's just the authenticity of everyone in this community and their passion. Even though I know it's here, it still surprises me to see it in the flesh. Especially in a place like Detroit. >> It's nice. >> Yeah. >> It's so nice to see it. And you bring up a good point. It's very authentic. >> Savannah: It's super authentic. >> I mean, what surprised me is one, the Wasm, or web assembly. I didn't see that coming at the scale of the conversation. It sucked a lot of options out of the room in my opinion, still hyped up. But this looks like it's got a good trajectory. I like that. The other thing that surprised me that was a learning was my interview with Solo.io, Idit, and Brian Gracely, because he's a CUBE alumni and former host of theCUBE, and analyst at Wikibon, was how their go-to-market was an example of a modern company in Covid with a clean sheet of paper and smart people, they're just doing things different. They're in Slack with their customers. And I walked away with, "Wow that's like a playbook that's not, was never, in the go-to-market VC-backed company playbook." I thought that was, for me, a personal walk away saying that's important. I like how they did that. And there's a lot of companies I think could learn from that. Especially as the recession comes where partnering with customers has always been a top priority. And how they did that was very clever, very effective, very efficient. So I walked away with that saying, "I think that's going to be a standard." So that was a pleasant surprise. >> That was a great surprise. Also, that's a female-founded company, which is obviously not super common. And the growth that they've experienced, to your point, really being catalyzed by Covid, is incredibly impressive. I mean they have some massive brand name customers, Amex, BMW for example. >> Savannah: Yeah. >> Great point. >> And I interviewed her years ago and I remember saying to myself, "Wow, she's impressive." I liked her. She's a player. A player for sure. And she's got confidence. Even on the interview she said, "We're just better, we have better product." And I just like the point of view. Very customer-focused but confident. And I just took, that's again, a great company. And again, I'm not surprised that Brian Gracely left Red Hat to go work there. So yeah, great, great call there. And of course other things that weren't surprising that I predicted, Red Hat continued to invest. They continue to bring people on theCUBE, they support theCUBE but more importantly they have a good strategy. They're in that multicloud positioning. They're going to have an opportunity to get a bite at the apple. And I what I call the supercloud. As enterprises try to go and be mainstream, Cloud Native, they're going to need some help. And Red Hat is always has the large enterprise customers. >> Savannah: What surprised you, Lisa? >> Oh my gosh, so many things. I think some of the memorable conversations that we had. I love talking with some of the enterprises that we mentioned, ING Bank for example. You know, or institutions that have been around for 100 plus years. >> Savannah: Oh, yeah. To see not only how much they've innovated and stayed relevant to meet the demands of the consumer, which are only increasing, but they're doing so while fostering a culture of innovation and a culture that allows these technology leaders to really grow within the organization. That was a really refreshing conversation that I think we had. 'Cause you can kind of >> Savannah: Absolutely. think about these old stodgy companies. Nah, of course they're going to digitize. >> Thinking about working for the bank, I think it's boring. >> Right? >> Yeah. And they were talking about, in fact, those great t-shirts that they had on, >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. were all about getting more people to understand how fun it is to work in tech for ING Bank in different industries. You don't just have to work for the big tech companies to be doing really cool stuff in technology. >> What I really liked about this show is we had two female hosts. >> Savannah: Yeah. >> How about that? Come on. >> Hey, well done, well done on your recruitment there, champ. >> Yes, thank you boss. (John laughs) >> And not to mention we have a really all-star production team. I do just want to give them a little shout out. To all the wonderful folks behind the lines here. (people clapping) >> John: Brendan. Good job. >> Yeah. Without Brendan, Anderson, Noah, and Andrew, we would be-- >> Of course Frank Faye holding it back there too. >> Yeah, >> Of course, Frank. >> I mean, without the business development wheels on the ship we'd really be in an unfortunate spot. I almost just swore on television. We're not going to do that. >> It's okay. No one's regulating. >> Yeah. (all laugh) >> Elon Musk just took over Twitter. >> It was a close call. >> That's right! >> It's going to be a hellscape. >> Yeah, I mean it's, shit's on fire. So we'll just see what happens next. I do, I really want to talk about this because I think it's really special. It's an ethos and some magic has happened here. Let's talk about Detroit. Let's talk about what it means to be here. We saw so many, and I can't stress this enough, but I think it really matters. There was a commitment to celebrating place here. Lisa, did you notice this too? >> Absolutely. And it surprised me because we just don't see that at conferences. >> Yeah. We're so used to going to the same places. >> Right. >> Vegas. Vegas, Vegas. More Vegas. >> Your tone-- >> San Francisco >> (both laugh) sums up my feelings. Yes. >> Right? >> Yeah. And, well, it's almost robotic but, and the fact that we're like, oh Detroit, really? But there was so much love for this city and recognizing and supporting its residents that we just don't see at conferences. You uncovered a lot of that with your swag-savvy segments, >> Savannah: Yeah. >> And you got more of that to talk about today. >> Don't worry, it's coming. Yeah. (laughs) >> What about you? Have you enjoyed Detroit? I know you hadn't been here in a long time, when we did our intro session. >> I think it's a bold move for the CNCF to come here and celebrate. What they did, from teaching the kids in the city some tech, they had a session. I thought that was good. >> Savannah: Loved that. I think it was a risky move because a lot of people, like, weren't sure if they were going to fly to Detroit. So some say it might impact the attendance. I thought they did a good job. Their theme, Road Ahead. Nice tie in. >> Savannah: Yeah. And so I think I enjoyed Detroit. The weather was great. It didn't rain. Nice breeze outside. >> Yeah. >> The weather was great, the restaurants are phenomenal. So Detroit's a good city. I missed some hockey games. I'd love to see the Red Wings play. Missed that game. But we always come back. >> I think it's really special. I mean, every time I talked to a company about their swag, that had sourced it locally, there was a real reason for this story. I mean even with Kasten in that last segment when I noticed that they had done Carhartt beanies, Carhartt being a Michigan company. They said, "I'm so glad you noticed. That's why we did it." And I think that type of, the community commitment to place, it all comes back to community. One of the bigger themes of the show. But that passion and that support, we need more of that. >> Lisa: Yeah. >> And the thing about the guests we've had this past three days have been phenomenal. We had a diverse set of companies, individuals come on theCUBE, you know, from Scott Johnston at Docker. A really one on one. We had a great intense conversation. >> Savannah: Great way to kick it off. >> We shared a lot of inside baseball, about Docker, super important company. You know, impressed with companies like Platform9 it's been around since the OpenStack days who are now in a relevant position. Rafi Systems, hot startup, they don't have a lot of resources, a lot of guerilla marketing going on. So I love to see the mix of startups really contributing. The big players are here. So it's a real great mix of companies. And I thought the interviews were phenomenal, like you said, Ford. We had, Kubia launched on theCUBE. >> Savannah: Yes. >> That's-- >> We snooped the location for KubeCon North America. >> You did? >> Chicago, everyone. In case you missed it, Bianca was nice enough to share that with us. >> We had Sarbjeet Johal, CUBE analyst came on, Keith Townsend, yesterday with you guys. >> We had like analyst speed dating last night. (all laugh) >> How'd that go? (laughs) >> It was actually great. One of the things that they-- >> Did they hug and kiss at the end? >> Here's the funny thing is that they were debating the size of the CNC app. One thinks it's too big, one thinks it's too small. And I thought, is John Goldilocks? (John laughs) >> Savannah: Yeah. >> What is John going to think about that? >> Well I loved that segment. I thought, 'cause Keith and Sarbjeet argue with each other on Twitter all the time. And I heard Keith say before, he went, "Yeah let's have it out on theCUBE." So that was fun to watch. >> Thank you for creating this forum for us to have that kind of discourse. >> Lisa: Yes, thank you. >> Well, it wouldn't be possible without the sponsors. We got a lot of CNCF projects and one of the ways to catch the attention of people walking the show floor is to have interesting swag. So we looked for the most unique swag on Wednesday and I hadn't found this yet, but I do just want to bring it up. Oops, I think I might have just dropped it. This is cute. Is, most random swag of the entire show goes to this toothbrush. I don't really have more in terms of the pitch there because this is just random. (Lisa laughs) >> But so, everyone needs that. >> John: So what's their tagline? >> And you forget these. >> Yeah, so the idea was to brush your cloud bills. So I think they're reducing the cost of-- >> Kind of a hygiene angle. >> Yeah, yeah. Very much a hygiene angle, which I found a little ironic in this crowd to be completely honest with you. >> John: Don't leave the lights on theCUBE. That's what they say. >> Yeah. >> I mean we are theCUBE so it would be unjust of me not to show you a Rubik's cube. This is actually one of those speed cubes. I'm not going to be able to solve this for you with one hand on camera, but apparently someone did it in 17 seconds at the booth. Knowing this audience, not surprising to me at all. Today we are, and yesterday, was the t-shirt contest. Best t-shirt contest. Today we really dove into the socks. So this is, I noticed this trend at KubeCon in Los Angeles last year. Lots of different socks, clouds obviously a theme for the cloud. I'm just going to lay these out. Lots of gamers in the house. Not surprising. Here on this one. >> John: Level up. >> Got to level up. I love these 'cause they say, "It's not a bug." And anyone who's coded has obviously had to deal with that. We've got, so Star Wars is a huge theme here. There's Lego sets. >> John: I think it's Star Trek. But. >> That's Star Trek? >> John: That's okay. >> Could be both. (Lisa laughs) >> John: Nevermind, I don't want to. >> You can flex your nerd and geek with us anytime you want, John. I don't mind getting corrected. I'm all about, I'm all about the truth. >> Star Trek. Star Wars. Okay, we're all the same. Okay, go ahead. >> Yeah, no, no, this is great. Slim.ai was nice enough to host us for dinner on Tuesday night. These are their lovely cloud socks. You can see Cloud Native, obviously Cloud Native Foundation, cloud socks, whole theme here. But if we're going to narrow it down to some champions, I love these little bee elephants from Raft. And when I went up to these guys, I actually probably would've called these my personal winner. They said, again, so community focused and humble here at CNCF, they said that Wiz was actually the champion according to the community. These unicorn socks are pretty excellent. And I have to say the branding is flawless. So we'll go ahead and give Wiz the win on the best sock contest. >> John: For the win. >> Yeah, Wiz for the win. However, the thing that I am probably going to use the most is this really dope Detroit snapback from Kasten. So I'm going to be rocking this from now on for the rest of the segment as well. And I feel great about this snapback. >> Looks great. Looks good on you. >> Yeah. >> Thanks John. (John laughs) >> So what are we expecting between now and KubeCon in Amsterdam? >> Well, I think it's going to be great to see how they, the European side, it's a chill show. It's great. Brings in the European audience from the global perspective. I always love the EU shows because one, it's a great destination. Amsterdam's going to be a great location. >> Savannah: I'm pumped. >> The American crowd loves going over there. All the event cities that they choose are always awesome. I missed Valencia cause I got Covid. I'm really bummed about that. But I love the European shows. It's just a little bit, it's high intensity, but it's the European chill. They got a little bit more of that siesta vibe going on. >> Yeah. >> And it's just awesome. >> Yeah, >> And I think that the mojo that carried throughout this week, it's really challenging to not only have a show that's five days, >> but to go through all week, >> Savannah: Seriously. >> to a Friday at 4:00 PM Eastern Time, and still have the people here, the energy and all the collaboration. >> Savannah: Yeah. >> The conversations that are still happening. And they mentioned that they had 11,000 people who have taken their Kubernetes course in that first year. If that's a benchmark and an indicator, we've got the veteran players here. But I do think that, I personally think that the hype of Kubernetes has actually preceded adoption. If you look at the data and now we're finally tipping over. I think the last two years we were on the fringe and right now we're there. It's great. (intro music playing) >> Hello everyone, and welcome to the power of n where HPE Aruba and Pensando are changing the game, the way customers scale with the cloud, and what's next in the evolution in switching. Hey everyone, I'm John furrier with the cube, and I'm here with Shane Corbin, director of technical product management at Pensando, and William show vice president of product management, Aruba HPE. Gentlemen, thank you for coming on and doing a deep dive and, and going into the, the big news. So the first question I want to ask you guys is um, what do you guys see from a market customer perspective that kicked this project off? um, amazing um, results um, over the past year or so? Where did it all come from? >> No, it's a great question, John. So when we were doing our homework, there were actually three very clear customer challenges. First, security threats were largely spawn with on, within the perimeter. In fact, Forrester highlighted 80% of threats originate within the internal network. Secondly, workloads are largely distributed creating a ton of east-west traffic. And then lastly, network services such as firewalls, load balancers, VPN aggregators are expensive, they're centralized, and they ultimately result in service chaining complexity. >> John: So, so, >> John: Go ahead, Shane. >> Yeah. Additionally, when we spoke to our customers after launching initially the distributed services platform, these compliance challenges clearly became apparent to us and while they saw the architecture value of adopting what the largest public cloud providers have done by putting a smart NIC in each compute node to provide these stateful services. Enterprise customers were still, were struggling with the need to upgrade fleets and brown field servers and the associated per node cost of adding a smart NIC to every compute node. Typically the traffic volumes for on a per node basis within an enterprise data center are significantly lower than cloud. Thus, we saw an opportunity here to, in conjunction with Aruba, develop a new category of switching product um, to share the processing capabilities of our unique intellectual property around our DPU across a rack of servers that net net delivers the same set of services through a new category of platform, enabling a distributed services architecture, and ultimately addressing the compliance and TCO generating huge TCO and ROI for customers. >> You know, one of the things that we've been reporting on with you guys, as well as the cloud scale, this is the volume of data and just the performance and scale. I think the timing of the, of this partnership and the product development is right on point. And you've got the edge right around the corner, more, more distributed nature of cloud operations, huge, huge change in the marketplace. So great timing on the origination story there. Great stuff. Tell me more about the platform itself, the details, what's under the hood, the hardware OS, what are the specs? >> Yeah, so we started with a very familiar premise. Rubik customers are already leveraging CX with an edge to cloud common operating model, in deploying leaf and spine networks. Plus we're excited to introduce the industry's first distributed services switch, where the first configuration has 48-25 gig ports with a hundred gig couplings running Aruba CX cloud native operating system, Pensando Asic's software inside, enabling layer four through six, seven stateful services. Shane, do you want to elaborate on. >> Yeah, let me elaborate on that a little bit further, um, you know, as we spoke existing platforms and how customers were seeking to address these challenges were, are inherently limited by the ASIC dye size, and that does limit their scale and performance and ability in traditional switching platforms to deliver truly stateful functions in, in, in a switching platform, this was, you know, architecturally from the ground up, when we developed our DPU, first and second generation, we delivered it, or we, we built it with stateful services in mind from the get-go, we leveraged the clean state design with our P four program with DPU. We evolved to our seven nanometers based pro DPU right now, which is essentially enabling software and Silicon. And this has generated a new level of performance scale, flexibility and capability in terms of services. This serves as the foundation for our 200 gig card, were we taking the largest cloud providers into production for. And the DPU itself is, is designed inherently to process stage, track stateful connections, and stateful flow is at very, very large scale without impacting performance. And in fact, the two of these DPU components server disk, services foundation of the CX 10 K, and this is how we enable stateful functions in a switching platform functions like stateful network fire-walling, stateful segmentation, enhanced programmable telemetry, which we believe will bring a whole lot of value to our customers. And this is a platform that's inherently programmable from the ground up. We can, we can build and leverage this platform to build new use cases around encryption, enabling stateful load balancing, stateful NAT to name a few, but, but the key message here is, this is, this is a platform with the next generation of architecture's in mind, is programmed, but at all, there's the stack, and that's what makes it fundamentally different than anything else. >> I want to just double click on that if you don't mind, before we get to the competitive question, because I think you brought up the state thing. I think this is worth calling out, if you guys don't mind commenting more on this states issue, because this is big. Cloud native developers right now, want speed, they're shifting left at the CICD pipeline with programmability. So going down and having the programmability, and having state is a really big deal. Can you guys just expand on that a little bit more and why it's important and, and how hard it really is to pull off? >> I, I can start, I guess, um, it's very hard to pull off because of the sheer amount of connections you need to track when you're developing something like a stateful firewall or a stateful load balancer, a key component of that is managing the connections at very, very large scale and understanding what's happening with those connections at scale, without impacting application performance. And this is fundamentally different at traditional switching platform, regardless of how it's deployed today in Asics, don't typically process and manage state like this. Um, memory resources within the chip aren't sufficient, um, the policy scale that you can um, implement on a platform aren't sufficient to address and fundamentally enable deployable firewalling, or load balancing, or other stateful services. >> That's exactly right. And so the other kind of key point here is that, if you think about the sophistication of different security threats, it does really require you to be able to look at the entire packet, and, and more so be able to look at the entire flow and be able to log that history, so that you can get much better heuristics around different anomalies, security threats that are emerging today. >> That's a great, great point. Thanks for, for, um, bringing that extra, extra point out. I would just add to this, we're reporting this all the time on Silicon angle in the cube is that, you know, the, you know, the, the automation wave that's coming with around data, you know, it's a center of data, not data centers we heard earlier on with the, in, in, in the presentation. Data drives automation, having that enabled with the state is a real big deal. So, I think that's really worth calling out. Now, I've got to ask the competition question, how is this different? I mean, this is an evolution. I would say, it's a revolution. You guys are being being humble, um, but how is this different from what customers can deploy today? >> Architecturally, if you take a look at it. We've, we've spoken about the technology and fundamentally in the platform what's unique, in the architecture, but, foundationally when customers deploy stateful services they're typically deployed leveraging traditional big box appliances for east-west our workload based agents, which seek to implement stateful security for each east-west. Architecturally what we're enabling is stateful services like firewalling, segmentation, can scale with the fabric and are delivered at the optimal point for east west which is through leaf for access layer of the network. And we do this for any type of workload. Be it deployed on a virtualized compute node, be a deployed on a containerized worker node, be deployed on bare metal, agnostic up typology, it can be in the access layer of a three tier design and a data center. It can be in the leaf layer of a VX VPN based fabric, but the goal is an all centrally managed to a single point of orchestration and control of which William will talk about shortly. The goal of this is to drive down the TCO of your data center as a whole, by allowing you to retire legacy appliances that are deployed in an east-west roll, and not utilize host based agents, and thus save a whole lot of money and we've modeled on the order of 60 to 70% in terms of savings in terms of the traditional data center pod design of a thousand compute nodes which we'll be publishing. And as, as we go forward additional services, as we mentioned, like encryption, this platform has the capability to terminate up to 800 gigs of our line rates encryption, IP sec, VPN per platform, stateful Nat load balancing, and this is all functionality we'll be adding to this existing platform because it's programmable as we've mentioned from the ground up. >> What are some of the use cases lead? And what's the top use cases, what's the low hanging fruit and where does this go? You've got service providers, enterprises. What are the types of customers you guys see implementing? >> Yeah, that's, what's really exciting about the CX 10,000. We actually see customer interest from all types of different markets, whether it be higher education, service providers to financial services, basically all enterprises verticals with private cloud or edge data centers. For example, it could be a hospital, a big box retailer, or a colon such as Iniquinate So it's really the CX 10,000 that creates a new switching category, enabling stateful services in that leaf node right at the workload, unifying network and security automation policy management. Second, the CX 10,000 greatly improves security posture and eliminates the need for hair-pinning east-west traffic all the way back to the centralized deployments. Lastly, As Shane highlighted, there's a 70% TCO savings by eliminating that appliance sprawl and ultimately collapsing the network security operations. >> I love the category creation um, vibe here. Love it. And also the technical and the cloud alignment's great. But how do the customers manage all this? Okay, I got a new category. I just put the box in, throw away some other ones? I mean, how does this all get done? And how does the customers manage all this? >> Yeah, so we're, we're looking to build on top of the river fabric composer. It's another familiar site for our customers, and what's already provides for compute storage and network automation, with a broad ecosystem integrations, such as VMware vSphere Vcenter as with Nutanix prism and so aligned with the CX 10,000 FGA, now you have a fabric composer, unified security and policy orchestration, and management with the ability to find firewall policies efficiently and provide that telemetry to collect your such a Splunk. >> John: So the customer environments right now involve a lot of multi-vendor and new frameworks, obviously, cloud native. How does this fit into the customer's existing environment with the ecosystem? How do they get, get going here? >> Yeah, great question. Um, Our customers can get going as we, we've built a flexible platform that can be deployed in either Greenfield or brownfield. Obviously it's a best of breed architecture for distributed services we're building in conjunction with Aruba. But if customers want to gradually integrate this into their existing environments and they're using other vendors, spines or cores, this can be inserted seamlessly as, as a lead for an access, access tier switch to deliver the exact same set of services within that architecture. So it plugs seamlessly in because it supports all the standard control plan protocols, a VX 90 VPN, and a traditional attitude, three tier designs easily. Now, for any enterprise solution deployment, it's critical that you build a holistic ecosystem around it. It's clear that, this will get customer deployments and the ecosystem being diverse and rich is very, very important. And as part of our integrations with the controller, we're building a broad suite of integrations across threat detection, application dependency mapping, Siemens sooam, dev ops infrastructure as code tools. (inaudible) And it's clear if you look at these categories of integrations, you know, XDR or threat detection requires full telemetric from within the data center, it's been hard to accomplish to date because you typically need agents on, on your compute nodes to give you the visibility into what's going on or firewalls for east west fuels. Now, our platform can natively provide full visibility into all flows east- west in the data center. And this can become the source of telemetry truth that these MLX CR engines require to work. The other aspects of ecosystem around application dependency mapping, this single core challenge with deploying segmentation east west is understanding the rules to put in & Right, first is how do you insert the service, um, service device in such a way that it won't add more complexity? We don't add any complexity because we're in line natively. How you would understand it, would allow you to build the rules that are necessary to do segmentation. We integrate with tools like Guardi core, we provide our flogs as source of data, and they can provide room recommendations and policy recommendations for customers. Around, we're building integrations around Siemen soam with, with tools like Splunk and elastic, elastic search that will allow NetOps and SecOps teams to visualize trend and manage the services delivered by the CX 10 K. And the other aspect of ecosystem, from a security standpoint is clearly how do I get policy for these traditional appliances and enforce them on this next generation architecture that you've built, that can enable stateful services. So we're building integrations with tools like turf and an algo sec third-party sources of policy that we can ingest and enforce on the infrastructure, allowing you to gradually, um, migrate to this new architecture over time. >> John: It's really a cloud native switch. I mean, you solve people's problems, pin- points, but yet positioned for growth. I mean, it sounds that's my takeaway, but I got to ask you guys both, what's the takeaway for the customers because it's not that simple for them, I mean it's, we a have complicated environment. (all giggling) >> Yeah, I think it's, I think it's really simple, um, you know, every 10 years or so, we see major evolutions in the data center and the switching environment, but we do believe we've created a new category with the distributed services, distributed services switch, delivering cloud scale distributed services, where the local, where the workloads reside greatly, simplifying network, security provisioning, and operations with the urban fabric composer while improving security posture and the TCO. But that's not all the folks, it's a journey, right Shane? >> Yeah, it's absolutely a journey. And this is the first step in a long journey with a great partner like Aruba. There's other platforms, hundred or 400 gig hardware platforms where we're looking at and then this additional services that we can enable over time, allowing customers to drive even more TCO value out of the platform of the architecture services like encryption for securing the cloud on-ramp, services like stateful load balancing to deploy east-west in the data center and, you know, holistically that's, that's the goal, deliver value for customers. And we believe we have an architecture and a platform, and this is a first step in a long journey. >> It's a great way of, I just ask one final, final question for both of you as product leaders, you got to be excited having a category creation product here in this market, this big wave, but what's your thoughts? >> Yeah, exactly right, it doesn't happen that often, and so we're, we're all in it's, it's exciting to be able to work with a great team like Pensando and Shane here. Um, so we're really, really excited about this launch. >> Yeah, it's awesome. The team is great. It's a great partnership between Pensando and Aruba. You know, we, we look forward to delivering value for our joint customers. >> John: Thank you both for sharing under the hood and more details on the product. I'm super excited to have one, for the first time Flexera on theCUBE program, I'm Keith Townsend @CTOAdvisor on Twitter and I'm joined by the CEO of Flexera, Jim Ryan. Jim, welcome to the show. >> Thanks for having us Keith. >> And Marie Godfrey, Senior Vice President of Product at Flexera. >> Thanks. It's good to be here. >> Welcome to the show. So, first off, I think most of the industry knows Flexera from the famous survey you guys do every year. Help us understand, what's the purpose of the survey and the intent of it? >> I think the purpose of the survey is to continue to provide the pulse of the market to our customers and the market at large. This is not a revelation to say that cloud, hybrid cloud, multi-cloud is an ever-changing fast, fast moving target in the industry and we find that by pulsing our customers and pulsing the market and then in return, giving people a broader sense as to what's going on, how they view the current top three challenges that they're facing, allows people to just stay relevant and stay current without having to do so much heavy lifting themselves. >> So, talk to me about the other part that's not as famous. Marie, the product, what's the primary goal of Flexera? >> So, to take off from what Jim said, the state of the cloud report that we issue every year is just one of many that we do research on and we published and Flexera hasn't always been known as a cloud management tool or a cloud provider of optimization solutions for the cloud. We have grown up and our legacy is very much on software asset management. So, over the course of both organic and inorganic means, we find ourselves in this great position now to be able to talk to not only our core strengths as an organization and as a company, but also what we do to help our customers optimize their cloud cost. >> So, one of the interesting outputs or data points from the report is this 70/30 split. I've seen it as 80/20, 70/30, more or less the same ideal concept that we spend 30% of our time basically on these innovative projects but 70% of our time basically on traditional IT operations. How does that impact your team's view of the market? >> Well, I think it profoundly impacts our view. You can call it the elephant in the room or you can call it the immovable object. The fact of the matter remains is that although a lot of the focus, attention and an ever increasing share of everybody's budget is being focused and centered on the cloud, if you're a CIO or somebody working in the CIO's organization, what you've got to realize and focus on is that 70% of your applications in your spending in your tech stack, are still on premise and VMs and other things that simply cannot be ignored. So, our overarching value proposition above and beyond remaining relevant in the cloud and publishing the state of the cloud is we focus on giving CIOs and IT teams the insight as to what's going on in your on-prem estate and if we do our jobs properly with our technology stack, it's identifying overuse or cost optimization opportunities, so, you can take dollars from your legacy stack and throw it over to invest in more innovative things that's going to move the needle for your business. >> So, that's a pretty interesting, I think value pop especially where the public cloud show help me understand kind of the overall challenge when we're thinking about public cloud, where typically less than 30% of our resources are probably in the public cloud. For most people watching this interview and the majority are on the private cloud, how does like Flexera help me to extract the value of both environments? >> Well, that's by robbing Peter to pay Paul, right? So, for everybody listening in here, lean in and listen. The biggest problem that we have when we're talking with our customers is that the cloud people aren't talking to the legacy on-prem asset management people and like Americans or everybody else, we got to just get together and talk to one another so, there's money and budget dollars to be extracted on the legacy on-prem last glamorous stuff of the house here and I say with great certainty not knowing all of the situations with everybody that's watching this, that I'm sure that you fight for single Dollar, Euro, Pound, Yen, et cetera, et cetera that you want to spend on your cloud initiatives. By collaborating with your brethren and your sisters over on the other side of the aisle and by looking at what's going on on the on-prem estate here, you can identify opportunities where you can reallocate budget dollars. >> So Marie, you guys have this term that I've not seen before, Technology Value Optimization or TVO, explain that to me. >> So, TVO is just the latest evolution in terms of how we think about our portfolio and our place in this ecosystem. That includes not just your traditional infrastructure management but this bridging and this realization of value when it comes to how we help our customers extract the value from what we do really, really well which is all around discovery of IT assets. It's around knowing my entitlements, it's around understanding my usage and now of course we brought cloud assets into the picture and helping our customers not only understand and see into those cloud assets but really look at how do I right size? How do I reclaim dollars? How do I avoid failed audits and really understand my usage patterns and what it is I need to do to enact and move toward that digital transformation that Jim referred to? So, at the end of the day, how we think about technology value optimization is that critical factor which is all around understanding the return on the investment and how to better understand and monetize the value for our customers in terms of what they have today and where they need to go. >> Ken, I wanted you to shed some light in what we consider or what we should now consider assets in this new era of cloud, and that your traditional products that how could others understand the AS or the asset either is a server or a virtual machine on that server networks switch etcetera but as I look at SaaS and past platforms and infrastructure as a service platform, what is the asset in this new world? >> By my definition, an asset is anything that your company spend money on and you need to get a return on it. So, 10 years ago, if we were having this conversation, an asset would have been a desktop, a router, a server, or maybe it would be a multi-core server and as things started to get a little bit more complicated, we added virtual machines. So, assets weren't just physical devices, they were virtual devices where we really cut our teeth and made a name for ourselves at Flexera was in software license optimization or software asset management, which is you take all of your physical assets and then you throw software applications from IBM, Oracle SAP, Microsoft and you put those two together and what you have are licensable events or financial exposure, because it's not just as simple as buying a database from Oracle, Oracle is going to want to know how many cores you're running on the server, and all of those different combinations in a Rubik's cube of complexity throw off licensable or financial events and while I'd love to tell everybody that the cloud and hybrid cloud and multi-cloud is making it easier, it's actually making it more sophisticated and more complicated to try and get your head around it because now you have containers and just when we thought we had figured out VMs and what assets and things are running in VMs, you've got containers that are going up and down and trying to find out what assets are in containers across a hybrid multicloud environment says the latest instantiation of chasing your tail here in the business. >> And then help me think through, or at least visualize this concept of entitlements when it comes to the cloud era. When I had on premises assets, I could go and look at my Oracle license and maybe figure out what I was entitled to but now when I, especially when I think of multicloud multi-service and even hybrid where Microsoft gives me credits or on premises services versus off-prem services, help me understand how I should be looking at that and how Flexera helps. >> I think you've got to be looking at it at closely and you can't look at it in isolation. So what you can't do is look at what you've got spun up in an Azure environment and AWS or Google cloud environment, because you're only going to negotiate one agreement with Microsoft most likely. You're only going to negotiate one ELA with IBM or Oracle, or fill in the blank and you know what, Oracle's not going to care what you're running in just cloud if they come and audit you. They are going to perform an audit, and they're going to want to know what you're running in in an on-prem world in VMs, on your data center and your desktop, and then they're going to want you to bring to full account what you're running in your cloud environments as well. So the way Flexera helps you is that we can discover, and we can give you an unprecedented visibility into what's running throughout your IT assets estate, whether it's on-prem, on a desktop, in a data center, on a SaaS application and an infrastructure platform as a service, pull it back and normalize it and compare that to what you've actually signed with all of your suppliers and when we do our job right, our customers run our algorithms across what you're entitled to use and what you're actually using, and what we find is that there's anywhere from 30 zero to 30% of overused in spend in ways. >> Keith, I just want to add example of where I saw this in real time with one of our solution engineers this about two weeks ago, where he was demonstrating the power of what we deliver across entitlements and usage and understanding where a potential wasted spend is and the customer was really focused on Oracle, and making sure that the Oracle negotiation coming up was going to be one where the customer felt like they were in a position of strengths and really understood what entitlements and usage were but when we showed them that Oracle was one piece of a bigger puzzle and that their cloud spend and AWS spend, and even their spend with some of their largest SaaS applications was actually much smaller than the whole, it really showed the customer the power of looking at these assets back to your question around assets and how do we think about them in a way that compares them to one another so the customer gets a full point of view. >> It's very difficult to get an Apple's and Apple's comparison with hybrid versus public and it's no longer just, I don't know if it was ever simple, but it's just more complex these days. Last question, as you look at the past few years, and I go to the Flexera website and look at your product portfolio, talk to me about the relationship between your customer in the industry and how that's changed and how customers consume Flexera as a product. >> I think over the years, our customers like the market has shifted to our SaaS and cloud offering we back in the day we used to have perpetual licenses and we were focusing on an on-prem scenario only, and our customers rightfully so have become far more demanding much like the market has and they now expect things to be delivered in real time with an agile mindset on a SaaS or cloud native basis and with that becomes a much, much higher expectation in terms of customer success and service that they get, because they're on a subscription basis, they can cancel at any time, just like we can do with our cable service provider. So we've really had to invest a lot, not just in R&D and making sure that our technology delivers outcomes, but in the way that we work with and service our customers. They're far more demanding than that they ever have and I wouldn't want it any other way and we think that our strategic imperatives is just keeping up with that in their high demands and expectations in the future. >> Well, I really appreciate you two taking out the time out of your busy schedules, both of you on the East coast, I'm in a Midwest, couple of hundred thousand people tuning into AWS re:Invent 2020 virtual learning to tackle a lot of these complex problems. The pandemic, the new reality of the market has forced us to address implementing and managing enterprise IT in a completely different way. This conference is a great example of that. I'm Lisa Martin with Stu Miniman, and we're please to welcome for the first time to theCUBE, Cindy Warner, SVP of Worldwide Service and Support at NetApp. Cindy, it's great to have you here. >> Thank you. I'm thrilled to be here. >> So this morning's keynote, talked a lot about transformation. Transformation of NetApp. Transformation that your customers need to execute to be competitive, to be successful. Tell us about customer transformation that you're seeing as the leader of service and support. >> Sure, our customers want outcome plain and simple. They are buying solutions that lead to outcome. So in the service and support area, the conversations we're having with our customers now is all about outcome. What can we do to ensure their outcome. To ensure their transformation. To ensure they can provide the services to their customers that they're looking to provide, or new revenue streams, or what have you. But it's really all about outcome and that's awesome because they don't care what's behind the curtain. They don't care if it's this box or that box. They care about outcomes. So that's a really big transformation for us. >> Yeah Cindy, one of the big challenges that used to be, okay, I got a box. I know exactly where it is. I know exactly, you know, who set it up and all the configuration. Now it's like wait. It's a multi-hybrid cloud world. >> Cindy: Right. >> And I got software spanning all of these environments and my data is all over the place. That has to have a huge ripple effect on the services and support. Walk us through a little bit about what that looks like. >> Yeah, I would tell you the number one thing in our world, if you really think about it, is data sovereignty. Because where's my data, you know. If I were a CTO or CIO, I'd wake up in the morning and go, where's my data. Right because, and we're managing that data for a lot of clients. And so it's really all about where's my data, and making sure that the sovereignty of the data is suppose to be in a certain place. It's suppose to be protected in a certain way. We work with a lot of regulated environments. So think healthcare, right. Think, you know, even automotive to some extend. All that IOT data, who's touching that data? That's personal data. So as, you know, the futurist talked about this morning, the ethical side of data for services and support is really intriguing to us actually. >> What's the conversation like, Cindy, with your enterprise legacy customers who weren't born in the cloud? How are you helping them kind of embrace the change that they have to go through? >> Yeah, I think the number one thing is to not be persuade into thinking it's all cloud, right. It's not everything is not made for the cloud. Especially if it wasn't born on the cloud. The pathway to the cloud could be very difficult, and maybe not even prudent. So we're doing a lot of assessments for our clients to decide what workloads belong in the cloud, and helping them to understand, it isn't all cloud. It's some cloud and it's hybrid cloud, and so it's this wonderful Lego cube that we build for them. >> NetApp has done quite a few acquisitions, you know, in the last couple of years. How does that impact what you're doing? Think about everything from the Gubernatis pieces and what's happening in AI. Talk about some of those challenges and opportunities. >> Sure, I mean, I would tell you something like Green Cloud that we did last year. When we look at managing those workloads, and helping to build up that Rubik's cube, right. Of piece parts and what that overall orchestration and architectural looks like in the future. Something like a Green Cloud helps us to orchestrate that. It helps us to manage that and really, that management plane for our clients is really where the heartburn is. It's taking look and seeing that entire data landscape and managing and orchestrating that. And the movement of all that data. That's the biggie. >> You know, follow up question. When I think about NetApp, NetApp was heavily involved in helping to really fix storage in a virtualized environment. >> Cindy: Sure. >> Lots of us have, you know, the wounds, the memories of, you know, over a decade of kind of fighting through that. What is FCS's role in kind of the cloud native this next wave? >> Yeah I, you know, I think it's the overall integration. Our team now is really fixated on where do we go with the overall integration of legacy and the cloud native stuff that clients are building. And grand it, the cloud native stuff gives competitive differentiation. Gives speed, gives scale. Really great stuff. But you can't leave the other stuff behind, right So for us, integration and how that integration is going to work through APIs or otherwise, is really a huge fixation in services and support. >> So NetApp has grown a lot. Done a lot of transformation. Talk about some of the changes to your customers' segmentation and how you're using that information and that segmentation to really deliver differentiated services. 'Cause let's face it, customers have a lot of choice. >> Right, and that's a key word for us actually. We say that the tag line, and for services and support we're looking for value based differentiated services that deliver outcomes. Big mouth. All I know, and I have no marketing chops, as you can tell, but the truth be told, when we look at our Global 1000 customer, they want high touch. And in some cases, no touch. And they want to get the information, solve problems really quickly without having to go, L1, L2 all through the tiers. And so we're piloting programs that are proactive predictive. And that are very high touch to ensure that they can solve their problems quite quickly. Either on their own or through the right person instead of going through some of that typical pathways to support. >> Alright, Cindy, I love you. You're going to help us decode some of this marketing discussion. So, hashtag data driven is something we're seeing at the show. >> Cindy: Right. >> Help connect for us, you know, how are customers being data driven as they look at their future in the cloud and beyond. >> Well, when I think of data driven, I think of new services. That to me means new services. And looking at the correlation, if you may say. Give you, you know, a start here. So the gentleman that had the DNA and Gene-Up data, right, in the keynote. If we can take that data and correlated to somebody's overall health history and see the transition, right. See as your blood pressure is going up. Or see as, you know, certain changes and doubts are happening in your health profile. Overall holistically, you can I think see the train before it hits you. Right, you can see a stroke coming. And that would be the most beautiful thing. Is to see stuff before it hits you. Same with the car manufacturer. If they see a pattern of brakes that are going out, Marry Barra probably never wants to sit in front of the Senate again, right. So we can see those patterns before a massive recall has to happen. So that's data driven to me. It's either new goods and services or seeing a train before it hits you. >> Cindy, I know this is a short segment, but we want to thank you so much for stopping by.
