Breaking Analysis: What we hope to learn at Supercloud22

This is breaking analysis with Dave Vellante. >> The term Supercloud is somewhat new, but the concepts behind it have been bubbling for years, early last decade when NIST put forth a definition of cloud computing it said services had to be accessible over a public network essentially cutting the on-prem crowd out of the cloud conversation. Now a guy named Chuck Hollis, who was a field CTO at EMC at the time and a prolific blogger objected to that criterion and laid out his vision for what he termed a private cloud. Now, in that post, he showed a workload running both on premises and in a public cloud sharing the underlying resources in an automated and seamless manner. What later became known more broadly as hybrid cloud that vision as we now know, really never materialized, and we were left with multi-cloud sets of largely incompatible and disconnected cloud services running in separate silos. The point is what Hollis laid out, IE the ability to abstract underlying infrastructure complexity and run workloads across multiple heterogeneous estates with an identical experience is what super cloud is all about. Hello and welcome to this week's Wikibon cube insights powered by ETR and this breaking analysis. We share what we hope to learn from super cloud 22 next week, next Tuesday at 9:00 AM Pacific. The community is gathering for Supercloud 22 an inclusive pilot symposium hosted by theCUBE and made possible by VMware and other founding partners. It's a one day single track event with more than 25 speakers digging into the architectural, the technical, structural and business aspects of Supercloud. This is a hybrid event with a live program in the morning running out of our Palo Alto studio and pre-recorded content in the afternoon featuring industry leaders, technologists, analysts and investors up and down the technology stack. Now, as I said up front the seeds of super cloud were sewn early last decade. After the very first reinvent we published our Amazon gorilla post, that scene in the upper right corner here. And we talked about how to differentiate from Amazon and form ecosystems around industries and data and how the cloud would change IT permanently. And then up in the upper left we put up a post on the old Wikibon Wiki. Yeah, it used to be a Wiki. Check out my hair by the way way no gray, that's how long ago this was. And we talked about in that post how to compete in the Amazon economy. And we showed a graph of how IT economics were changing. And cloud services had marginal economics that looked more like software than hardware at scale. And this would reset, we said opportunities for both technology sellers and buyers for the next 20 years. And this came into sharper focus in the ensuing years culminating in a milestone post by Greylock's Jerry Chen called Castles in the Cloud. It was an inspiration and catalyst for us using the term Supercloud in John Furrier's post prior to reinvent 2021. So we started to flesh out this idea of Supercloud where companies of all types build services on top of hyperscale infrastructure and across multiple clouds, going beyond multicloud 1.0, if you will, which was really a symptom, as we said, many times of multi-vendor at least that's what we argued. And despite its fuzzy definition, it resonated with people because they knew something was brewing, Keith Townsend the CTO advisor, even though he frankly, wasn't a big fan of the buzzy nature of the term Supercloud posted this awesome Blackboard on Twitter take a listen to how he framed it. Please play the clip. >> Is VMware the right company to make the super cloud work, term that Wikibon came up with to describe the taking of discreet services. So it says RDS from AWS, cloud compute engines from GCP and authentication from Azure to build SaaS applications or enterprise applications that connect back to your data center, is VMware's cross cloud vision 'cause it is just a vision today, the right approach. Or should you be looking towards companies like HashiCorp to provide this overall capability that we all agree, or maybe you don't that we need in an enterprise comment below your thoughts. >> So I really like that Keith has deep practitioner knowledge and lays out a couple of options. I especially like the examples he uses of cloud services. He recognizes the need for cross cloud services and he notes this capability is aspirational today. Remember this was eight or nine months ago and he brings HashiCorp into the conversation as they're one of the speakers at Supercloud 22 and he asks the community, what they think, the thing is we're trying to really test out this concept and people like Keith are instrumental as collaborators. Now I'm sure you're not surprised to hear that mot everyone is on board with the Supercloud meme, in particular Charles Fitzgerald has been a wonderful collaborator just by his hilarious criticisms of the concept. After a couple of super cloud posts, Charles put up his second rendition of "Supercloudifragilisticexpialidoucious". I mean, it's just beautiful, but to boot, he put up this picture of Baghdad Bob asking us to just stop, Bob's real name is Mohamed Said al-Sahaf. He was the minister of propaganda for Sadam Husein during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. And he made these outrageous claims of, you know US troops running in fear and putting down their arms and so forth. So anyway, Charles laid out several frankly very helpful critiques of Supercloud which has led us to really advance the definition and catalyze the community's thinking on the topic. Now, one of his issues and there are many is we said a prerequisite of super cloud was a super PaaS layer. Gartner's Lydia Leong chimed in saying there were many examples of successful PaaS vendors built on top of a hyperscaler some having the option to run in more than one cloud provider. But the key point we're trying to explore is the degree to which that PaaS layer is purpose built for a specific super cloud function. And not only runs in more than one cloud provider, Lydia but runs across multiple clouds simultaneously creating an identical developer experience irrespective of a state. Now, maybe that's what Lydia meant. It's hard to say from just a tweet and she's a sharp lady, so, and knows more about that market, that PaaS market, than I do. But to the former point at Supercloud 22, we have several examples. We're going to test. One is Oracle and Microsoft's recent announcement to run database services on OCI and Azure, making them appear as one rather than use an off the shelf platform. Oracle claims to have developed a capability for developers specifically built to ensure high performance low latency, and a common experience for developers across clouds. Another example we're going to test is Snowflake. I'll be interviewing Benoit Dageville co-founder of Snowflake to understand the degree to which Snowflake's recent announcement of an application development platform is perfect built, purpose built for the Snowflake data cloud. Is it just a plain old pass, big whoop as Lydia claims or is it something new and innovative, by the way we invited Charles Fitz to participate in Supercloud 22 and he decline saying in addition to a few other somewhat insulting things there's definitely interesting new stuff brewing that isn't traditional cloud or SaaS but branding at all super cloud doesn't help either. Well, indeed, we agree with part of that and we'll see if it helps advanced thinking and helps customers really plan for the future. And that's why Supercloud 22 has going to feature some of the best analysts in the business in The Great Supercloud Debate. In addition to Keith Townsend and Maribel Lopez of Lopez research and Sanjeev Mohan from former Gartner analyst and principal at SanjMo participated in this session. Now we don't want to mislead you. We don't want to imply that these analysts are hopping on the super cloud bandwagon but they're more than willing to go through the thought experiment and mental exercise. And, we had a great conversation that you don't want to miss. Maribel Lopez had what I thought was a really excellent way to think about this. She used TCP/IP as an historical example, listen to what she said. >> And Sanjeev Mohan has some excellent thoughts on the feasibility of an open versus de facto standard getting us to the vision of Supercloud, what's possible and what's likely now, again, I don't want to imply that these analysts are out banging the Supercloud drum. They're not necessarily doing that, but they do I think it's fair to say believe that something new is bubbling and whether it's called Supercloud or multicloud 2.0 or cross cloud services or whatever name you choose it's not multicloud of the 2010s and we chose Supercloud. So our goal here is to advance the discussion on what's next in cloud and Supercloud is meant to be a term to describe that future of cloud and specifically the cloud opportunities that can be built on top of hyperscale, compute, storage, networking machine learning, and other services at scale. And that is why we posted this piece on Answering the top 10 questions about Supercloud. Many of which were floated by Charles Fitzgerald and others in the community. Why does the industry need another term what's really new and different? And what is hype? What specific problems does Supercloud solve? What are the salient characteristics of Supercloud? What's different beyond multicloud? What is a super pass? Is it necessary to have a Supercloud? How will applications evolve on superclouds? What workloads will run? All these questions will be addressed in detail as a way to advance the discussion and help practitioners and business people understand what's real today. And what's possible with cloud in the near future. And one other question we'll address is who will build super clouds? And what new entrance we can expect. This is an ETR graphic that we showed in a previous episode of breaking analysis, and it lays out some of the companies we think are building super clouds or in a position to do so, by the way the Y axis shows net score or spending velocity and the X axis depicts presence in the ETR survey of more than 1200 respondents. But the key callouts to this slide in addition to some of the smaller firms that aren't yet showing up in the ETR data like Chaossearch and Starburst and Aviatrix and Clumio but the really interesting additions are industry players Walmart with Azure, Capital one and Goldman Sachs with AWS, Oracle, with Cerner. These we think are early examples, bubbling up of industry clouds that will eventually become super clouds. So we'll explore these and other trends to get the community's input on how this will all play out. These are the things we hope you'll take away from Supercloud 22. We actually have a launch video Shannon Champion, of Dell Technologies. And the way we do things a lot of times, is, analysts get a little preview or when you're watching things. You might have questions on it. So, rather than me just wanting it, or you wanting yourself I actually brought in a couple of Dell Technologies expertS two of our Cube alumni, happy to welcome you back to the program. Jon Siegal, he is the Vice President of Product Marketing, and Chad Dunn, who's the Vice President of Product Management, both of them with Dell Technologies. Gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us. >> Good to see you Stu. >> Great to be here. >> All right, and so what we're going to do is we're going to be rolling the video here. I've got a button I'm going to press, Andrew will stop it here and then we'll kind of dig in a little bit, go into some questions when we're all done. We're actually holding a crowd chat, where you will be able to ask your questions, talk to the experts and everything. And so a little bit different way to do a product announcement. Hope you enjoy it. And with that, it's VxRail. Taking HCI to the extremes is the theme. We'll see what that means and everything. But without any further ado, let's let Shannon take the video away. >> Hello, and welcome. My name is Shannon Champion, and I'm looking forward to taking you through what's new with VxRail. Let's get started. We have a lot to talk about. Our launch covers new announcements addressing use cases across the Core, Edge and Cloud and spans both new hardware platforms and options, as well as the latest in software innovations. So let's jump right in. Before we talk about our announcements, let's talk about where customers are adopting VxRail today. First of all, on behalf of the entire Dell Technologies and VxRail teams, I want to thank each of our over 8000 customers, big and small in virtually every industry, who've chosen VxRail to address a broad range of workloads, deploying nearly 100,000 nodes today. Thank you. Our promise to you is that we will add new functionality, improve serviceability, and support new use cases, so that we deliver the most value to you, whether in the Core, at the Edge or for the Cloud. In the Core, VxRail from day one has been a catalyst to accelerate IT transformation. Many of our customers started here and many will continue to leverage VxRail to simply extend and enhance your VMware environment. Now we can support even more demanding applications such as In-Memory databases, like SAP HANA, and more AI and ML applications, with support for more and more powerful GPUs. At the Edge, video surveillance, which also uses GPUs, by the way, is an example of a popular use case leveraging VxRail alongside external storage. And right now we all know the enhanced role that IT is playing. And as it relates to VDI, VxRail has always been a great option for that. In the Cloud, it's all about Kubernetes, and how Dell Technologies Cloud platform, which is VCF on VxRail can deliver consistent infrastructure for both traditional and Cloud native applications. And we're doing that together with VMware. VxRail is the only jointly engineered HCI system built with VMware for VMware environments, designed to enhance the native VMware experience. This joint engineering with VMware and investments in software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers. >> Alright, so Shannon talked a bit about, the important role of IT Of course right now, with the global pandemic going on. It's really, calling in, essential things, putting, platforms to the test. So, I really love to hear what both of you are hearing from customers. Also, VDI, of course, in the early days, it was, HCI-only-does-VDI. Now, we know there are many solutions, but remote work is putting that back front and center. So, Jon, why don't we start with you as the what is (muffled speaking) >> Absolutely. So first of all, Stu, thank you, I want to do a shout out to our VxRail customers around the world. It's really been humbling, inspiring, and just amazing to see The impact of our VxRail customers around the world and what they're having on on human progress here. Just for a few examples, there are genomics companies that we have running VxRail that have rolled out testing at scale. We also have research universities out in the Netherlands, doing the antibody detection. The US Navy has stood up a floating hospital to of course care for those in need. So we are here to help that's been our message to our customers, but it's amazing to see how much they're helping society during this. So just just a pleasure there. But as you mentioned, just to hit on the VDI comments, so to your points too, HCI, VxRail, VDI, that was an initial use case years ago. And it's been great to see how many of our existing VxRail customers have been able to pivot very quickly leveraging VxRail to add and to help bring their remote workforce online and support them with their existing VxRail. Because VxRail is flexible, it is agile, to be able to support those multiple workloads. And in addition to that, we've also rolled out some new VDI bundles to make it simpler for customers more cost effective cater to everything from knowlEdge workers to multimedia workers. You name it, you know from 250, desktops up to 1000. But again, back to your point VxRail, HCI, is well beyond VDI, it crossed the chasm a couple years ago actually. And VDI now is less than a third of the typical workloads, any of our customers out there, it supports now a range of workloads that you heard from Shannon, whether it's video surveillance, whether it's general purpose, all the way to mission critical applications now with SAP HAN. So, this has changed the game for sure. But the range of work loads and the flexibility of the actual rules which really helping our existing customers during this pandemic. >> Yeah, I agree with you, Jon, we've seen customers really embrace HCI for a number of workloads in their environments, from the ones that we sure all knew and loved back in the initial days of HCI. Now, the mission critical things now to Cloud native workloads as well, and the sort of the efficiencies that customers are able to get from HCI. And specifically, VxRail gives them that ability to pivot. When these, shall we say unexpected circumstances arise? And I think that that's informing their their decisions and their opinions on what their IP strategies look like as they move forward. They want that same level of agility, and ability to react quickly with their overall infrastructure. >> Excellent. Now I want to get into the announcements. What I want my team actually, your team gave me access to the CIO from the city of Amarillo, so maybe they can dig up that footage, talk about how fast they pivoted, using VxRail to really spin up things fast. So let's hear from the announcement first and then definitely want to share that that customer story a little bit later. So let's get to the actual news that Shannon's going to share. >> Okay, now what's new? I am pleased to announce a number of exciting updates and new platforms, to further enable IT modernization across Core, Edge and Cloud. I will cover each of these announcements in more detail, demonstrating how only VxRail can offer the breadth of platform configurations, automation, orchestration and Lifecycle Management, across a fully integrated hardware and software full stack with consistent, simplified operations to address the broadest range of traditional and modern applications. I'll start with hybrid Cloud and recap what you may have seen in the Dell Technologies Cloud announcements just a few weeks ago, related to VMware Cloud foundation on VxRail. Then I'll cover two brand new VxRail hardware platforms and additional options. And finally circle back to talk about the latest enhancements to our VxRail HCI system software capabilities for Lifecycle Management. Let's get started with our new Cloud offerings based on VxRail. VxRail is the HCI foundation for Dell Technologies, Cloud Platform, bringing automation and financial models, similar to public Cloud to On-premises environments. VMware recently introduced Cloud foundation for Delta, which is based on vSphere 7.0. As you likely know by now, vSphere 7.0 was definitely an exciting and highly anticipated release. In keeping with our synchronous release commitment, we introduced VxRail 7.0 based on vSphere 7.0 in late April, which was within 30 days of VMware's release. Two key areas that VMware focused on we're embedding containers and Kubernetes into vSphere, unifying them with virtual machines. And the second is improving the work experience for vSphere administrators with vSphere Lifecycle Manager or VLCM. I'll address the second point a bit in terms of how VxRail fits in in a moment for VCF 4 with Tom Xu, based on vSphere 7.0 customers now have access to a hybrid Cloud platform that supports native Kubernetes workloads and management, as well as your traditional VM-based workloads. So containers are now first class citizens of your private Cloud alongside traditional VMs and this is now available with VCF 4.0, on VxRail 7.0. VxRail's tight integration with VMware Cloud foundation delivers a simple and direct path not only to the hybrid Cloud, but also to deliver Kubernetes at Cloud scale with one complete automated platform. The second Cloud announcement is also exciting. Recent VCF for networking advancements have made it easier than ever to get started with hybrid Cloud, because we're now able to offer a more accessible consolidated architecture. And with that Dell Technologies Cloud platform can now be deployed with a four-node configuration, lowering the cost of an entry level hybrid Cloud. This enables customers to start smaller and grow their Cloud deployment over time. VCF and VxRail can now be deployed in two different ways. For small environments, customers can utilize a consolidated architecture which starts with just four nodes. Since the management and workload domains share resources in this architecture, it's ideal for getting started with an entry level Cloud to run general purpose virtualized workloads with a smaller entry point. Both in terms of required infrastructure footprint as well as cost, but still with a Consistent Cloud operating model. For larger environments where dedicated resources and role-based access control to separate different sets of workloads is usually preferred. You can choose to deploy a standard architecture which starts at eight nodes for independent management and workload domains. A standard implementation is ideal for customers running applications that require dedicated workload domains that includes Horizon, VDI, and vSphere with Kubernetes. >> Alright, Jon, there's definitely been a lot of interest in our community around everything that VMware is doing with vSphere 7.0. understand if you wanted to use the Kubernetes piece, it's VCF as that so we've seen the announcements, Dell, partnering in there it helps us connect that story between, really the VMware strategy and how they talk about Cloud and where does VxRail fit in that overall, Delta Cloud story? >> Absolutely. So first of all Stu, the VxRail course is integral to the Delta Cloud strategy. it's been VCF on VxRail equals the Delta Cloud platform. And this is our flagship on prem Cloud offering, that we've been able to enable operational consistency across any Cloud, whether it's On-prem, in the Edge or in the public Cloud. And we've seen the Dell tech Cloud Platform embraced by customers for a couple key reasons. One is it offers the fastest hybrid Cloud deployment in the market. And this is really, thanks to a new subscription offer that we're now offering out there where in less than 14 days, it can be still up and running. And really, the Dell tech Cloud does bring a lot of flexibility in terms of consumption models, overall when it comes to VxRail. Secondly, I would say is fast and easy upgrades. This is what VxRail brings to the table for all workloads, if you will, into especially critical in the Cloud. So the full automation of Lifecycle Management across the hardware and software stack across the VMware software stack, and in the Dell software and hardware supporting that, together, this enables essentially the third thing, which is customers can just relax. They can be rest assured that their infrastructure will be continuously validated, and always be in a continuously validated state. And this is the kind of thing that those three value propositions together really fit well, with any on-prem Cloud. Now you take what Shannon just mentioned, and the fact that now you can build and run modern applications on the same VxRail infrastructure alongside traditional applications. This is a game changer. >> Yeah, I love it. I remember in the early days talking with Dunn about CI, how does that fit in with Cloud discussion and the line I've used the last couple years is, modernize the platform, then you can modernize the application. So as companies are doing their full modernization, then this plays into what you're talking about. All right, we can let Shannon continue, we can get some more before we dig into some more analysis. >> That's good. >> Let's talk about new hardware platforms and updates. that result in literally thousands of potential new configuration options. covering a wide breadth of modern and traditional application needs across a range of the actual use cases. First up, I am incredibly excited to announce a brand new Dell EMC VxRail series, the D series. This is a ruggedized durable platform that delivers the full power of VxRail for workloads at the Edge in challenging environments or for space constrained areas. VxRail D series offers the same compelling benefits as the rest of the VxRail portfolio with simplicity, agility and lifecycle management. But in a lightweight short depth at only 20 inches, it's adorable form factor that's extremely temperature-resilient, shock resistant, and easily portable. It even meets milspec standards. That means you have the full power of lifecycle automation with VxRail HCI system software and 24 by seven single point of support, enabling you to rapidly react to business needs, no matter the location or how harsh the conditions. So whether you're deploying a data center at a mobile command base, running real-time GPS mapping on the go, or implementing video surveillance in remote areas, you can ensure availability, integrity and confidence for every workload with the new VxRail ruggedized D series. >> All right, Chad we would love for you to bring us in a little bit that what customer requirement for bringing this to market. I remember seeing, Dell servers ruggedized, of course, Edge, really important growth to build on what Jon was talking about, Cloud. So, Chad, bring us inside, what was driving this piece of the offering? >> Sure Stu. Yeah, yeah, having been at the hardware platforms that can go out into some of these remote locations is really important. And that's being driven by the fact that customers are looking for compute performance and storage out at some of these Edges or some of the more exotic locations. whether that's manufacturing plants, oil rigs, submarine ships, military applications, places that we've never heard of. But it's also about extending that operational simplicity of the the sort of way that you're managing your data center that has VxRails you're managing your Edges the same way using the same set of tools. You don't need to learn anything else. So operational simplicity is absolutely key here. But in those locations, you can take a product that's designed for a data center where definitely controlling power cooling space and take it some of these places where you get sand blowing or seven to zero temperatures, could be Baghdad or it could be Ketchikan, Alaska. So we built this D series that was able to go to those extreme locations with extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme altitude, but still offer that operational simplicity. Now military is one of those applications for the rugged platform. If you look at the resistance that it has to heat, it operates at a 45 degrees Celsius or 113 degrees Fahrenheit range, but it can do an excursion up to 55 C or 131 degrees Fahrenheit for up to eight hours. It's also resistant to heat sand, dust, vibration, it's very lightweight, short depth, in fact, it's only 20 inches deep. This is a smallest form factor, obviously that we have in the VxRail family. And it's also built to be able to withstand sudden shocks certified to withstand 40 G's of shock and operation of the 15,000 feet of elevation. Pretty high. And this is sort of like wherever skydivers go to when they want the real thrill of skydiving where you actually need oxygen to, to be for that that altitude. They're milspec-certified. So, MIL-STD-810G, which I keep right beside my bed and read every night. And it comes with a VxRail stick hardening package is packaging scripts so that you can auto lock down the rail environment. And we've got a few other certifications that are on the roadmap now for naval shock requirements. EMI and radiation immunity often. >> Yeah, it's funny, I remember when we first launched it was like, "Oh, well everything's going to white boxes. "And it's going to be massive, "no differentiation between everything out there." If you look at what you're offering, if you look at how public Clouds build their things, but I called it a few years or is there's a pure optimization. So you need to scale, you need similarities but you know you need to fit some, very specific requirements, lots of places, so, interesting stuff. Yeah, certifications, always keep your teams busy. Alright, let's get back to Shannon to view on the report. >> We are also introducing three other hardware-based additions. First, a new VxRail E Series model based on where the first time AMD EPYC processors. These single socket 1U nodes, offer dual socket performance with CPU options that scale from eight to 64 Cores, up to a terabyte of memory and multiple storage options making it an ideal platform for desktop VDI analytics and computer aided design. Next, the addition of the latest Nvidia Quadro RTX GPUs brings the most significant advancement in computer graphics in over a decade to professional work flows. Designers and artists across industries can now expand the boundary of what's possible, working with the largest and most complex graphics rendering, deep learning and visual computing workloads. And Intel Optane DC persistent memory is here, and it offers high performance and significantly increased memory capacity with data persistence at an affordable price. Data persistence is a critical feature that maintains data integrity, even when power is lost, enabling quicker recovery and less downtime. With support for Intel obtain DC persistent memory customers can expand in memory intensive workloads and use cases like SAP HANA. Alright, let's finally dig into our HCI system software, which is the Core differentiation for VxRail regardless of your workload or platform choice. Our joining engineering with VMware and investments in VxRail HCI system software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers. Under the covers, VxRail offers best in class hardware, married with VMware HCI software, either vSAN or VCF. But what makes us different stems from our investments to integrate the two. Dell Technologies has a dedicated VxRail team of about 400 people to build market sell and support a fully integrated hyper converged system. That team has also developed our unique VxRail HCI system software, which is a suite of integrated software elements that extend VMware native capabilities to deliver seamless, automated operational experience that customers cannot find elsewhere. The key components of VxRail HCI system software shown around the arc here that include the extra manager, full stack lifecycle management, ecosystem connectors, and support. I don't have time to get into all the details of these elements today, but if you're interested in learning more, I encourage you to meet our experts. And I will tell you how to do that in a moment. I touched on the LCM being a key feature to the vSphere 7.0 earlier and I'd like to take the opportunity to expand on that a bit in the context of VxRail Lifecycle Management. The LCM adds valuable automation to the execution of updates for customers, but it doesn't eliminate the manual work still needed to define and package the updates and validate all of the components prior to applying them. With VxRail customers have all of these areas addressed automatically on their behalf, freeing them to put their time into other important functions for their business. Customers tell us that Lifecycle management continues to be a major source of the maintenance effort they put into their infrastructure, and then it tends to lead to overburden IT staff, that it can cause disruptions to the business if not managed effectively, and that it isn't the most efficient economically. Automation of Lifecycle Management and VxRail results in the utmost simplicity from a customer experience perspective, and offers operational freedom from maintaining infrastructure. But as shown here, our customers not only realize greater IT team efficiencies, they have also reduced downtime with fewer unplanned outages, and reduced overall cost of operations. With VxRail HCI system software, intelligent Lifecycle Management upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack are automated, keeping clusters and continuously validated states while minimizing risks and operational costs. How do we ensure Continuously validated states for VxRail. VxRail labs execute an extensive, automated, repeatable process on every firmware and software upgrade and patch to ensure clusters are in continuously validated states of the customers choosing across their VxRail environment. The VxRail labs are constantly testing, analyzing, optimizing, and sequencing all of the components in the upgrade to execute in a single package for the full stack. All the while VxRail is backed by Dell EMC's world class services and support with a single point of contact for both hardware and software. IT productivity skyrockets with single click non disruptive upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack without the need to do extensive research and testing. taking you to the next VxRail version of your choice, while always in a continuously validated state. You can also confidently execute automated VxRail upgrades. No matter what hardware generation or node types are in the cluster. They don't have to all be the same. And upgrades with VxRail are faster and more efficient with leapfrogging simply choose any VxRail version you desire. And be assured you will get there in a validated state while seamlessly bypassing any other release in between. Only VxRail can do that. >> All right, so Chad, the lifecycle management piece that Shannon was just talking about is, not the sexiest, it's often underappreciated. There's not only the years of experience, but the continuous work you're doing, reminds me back the early vSAN deployments versus VxRail jointly developed, jointly tested between Dell and VMware. So bring us inside why, 2020 Lifecycle Management still, a very important piece, especially in the VM family line. >> Yes, Stu, I think it's sexy, but, I'm pretty big nerd. (all laughing) Yeah, this is really always been our bread and butter. And in fact, it gets even more important, the larger the deployments come, when you start to look at data centers full of VxRails and all the different hardware software, firmware combinations that could exist out there. It's really the value that you get out of that VxRail HCI system software that Shannon was talking about and how it's optimized around the VMware use case. Very tightly integrated with each VMware component, of course, and the intelligence of being able to do all the firmware, all of the drivers, all the software all together in tremendous value to our customers. But to deliver that we really need to make a fairly large investment. So as Shannon mentioned, we run about 25,000 hours of testing across Each major release for patches, express patches, that's about 7000 hours for each of those. So, obviously, there's a lot of parallelism. And we're always developing new test scenarios for each release that we need to build in as we as we introduce new functionality. And one of the key things that we're able to do, as Shannon mentioned, is to be able to leapfrog releases and get you to that next validated state. We've got about 100 engineers just working on creating and executing those test cases on a continuous basis and obviously, a huge amount of automation. And we've talked about that investment to execute those tests. That's one worth of $60 million of investment in our lab. In fact, we've got just over 2000 VxRail units in our testbed across the US, Shanghai, China and Cork, Ireland. So a massive amount of testing of each of those components to make sure that they operate together in a validated state. >> Yeah, well, absolutely, it's super important not only for the day one, but the day two deployments. But I think this actually a great place for us to bring in that customer that Dell gave me access to. So we've got the CIO of Amarillo, Texas, he was an existing VxRail customer. And he's going to explain what happened as to how he needed to react really fast to support the work-from-home initiative, as well as we get to hear in his words the value of what Lifecycle Management means. So Andrew, if we could queue up that customer segment, please? >> It's been massive and it's been interesting to see the IT team absorb it. As we mature, I think they embrace the ability to be innovative and to work with our departments. But this instance, really justified why I was driving progress. So fervently why it was so urgent today. Three years ago, the answer would have been no. We wouldn't have been in a place where we could adapt With VxRail in place, in a week we spun up hundreds of instant balls. We spun up a 75-person call center in a day and a half, for our public health. We rolled out multiple applications for public health so they could do remote clinics. It's given us the flexibility to be able to roll out new solutions very quickly and be very adaptive. And it's not only been apparent to my team, but it's really made an impact on the business. And now what I'm seeing is those of my customers that work, a little lagging or a little conservative, or understanding the impact of modernizing the way they do business because it makes them adaptable as well. >> Alright, so great, Richard, you talked a bunch about the the efficiencies that that the IT put in place, how about that, that overall just managed, you talked about how fast you spun up these new VDI instances. need to be able to do things much simpler? So how does the overall Lifecycle Management fit into this discussion? >> It makes it so much easier. And in the old environment, one, It took a lot of man hours to make change. It was very disruptive, when we did make change, it overburdened, I guess that's the word I'm looking for. It really overburdened our staff to cause disruption to business. That wasn't cost efficient. And then simple things like, I've worked for multi billion dollar companies where we had massive QA environments that replicated production, simply can't afford that at local government. Having this sort of environment lets me do a scaled down QA environment and still get the benefit of rolling out non disruptive change. As I said earlier, it's allowed us to take all of those cycles that we were spending on Lifecycle Management because it's greatly simplified, and move those resources and rescale them in other areas where we can actually have more impact on the business. It's hard to be innovative when 100% of your cycles are just keeping the ship afloat. >> All right, well, nothing better than hearing it straight from the end user, public sector reacting very fast to the COVID-19. And, if you heard him he said, if this is his, before he had run this project, he would not have been able to respond. So I think everybody out there understands, if I didn't actually have access to the latest technology, it would be much harder. All right, I'm looking forward to doing the CrowdChat letting everybody else dig in with questions and get follow up but a little bit more, I believe one more announcement he can and got for us though. Let's roll the final video clip. >> In our latest software release VxRail 4.7.510, We continue to add new automation and self service features. New functionality enables you to schedule and run upgrade health checks in advance of upgrades, to ensure clusters are in a ready state for the next upgrade or patch. This is extremely valuable for customers that have stringent upgrade windows, as they can be assured the clusters will seamlessly upgrade within that window. Of course, running health checks on a regular basis also helps ensure that your clusters are always ready for unscheduled patches and security updates. We are also offering more flexibility and getting all nodes or clusters to a common release level with the ability to reimage nodes or clusters to a specific VxRail version, or down rev one or more nodes that may be shipped at a higher rate than the existing cluster. This enables you to easily choose your validated state when adding new nodes or repurposing nodes in a cluster. We actually have a launch video Shannon Champion, of Dell Technologies. And the way we do things a lot of times, is, analysts get a little preview or when you're watching things. You might have questions on it. So, rather than me just wanting it, or you wanting yourself I actually brought in a couple of Dell Technologies expertS two of our Cube alumni, happy to welcome you back to the program. Jon Siegal, he is the Vice President of Product Marketing, and Chad Dunn, who's the Vice President of Product Management, both of them with Dell Technologies. Gentlemen, thanks so much for joining us. >> Good to see you Stu. >> Great to be here. >> All right, and so what we're going to do is we're going to be rolling the video here. I've got a button I'm going to press, Andrew will stop it here and then we'll kind of dig in a little bit, go into some questions when we're all done. We're actually holding a crowd chat, where you will be able to ask your questions, talk to the experts and everything. And so a little bit different way to do a product announcement. Hope you enjoy it. And with that, it's VxRail. Taking HCI to the extremes is the theme. We'll see what that means and everything. But without any further ado, let's let Shannon take the video away. >> Hello, and welcome. My name is Shannon Champion, and I'm looking forward to taking you through what's new with VxRail. Let's get started. We have a lot to talk about. Our launch covers new announcements addressing use cases across the Core, Edge and Cloud and spans both new hardware platforms and options, as well as the latest in software innovations. So let's jump right in. Before we talk about our announcements, let's talk about where customers are adopting VxRail today. First of all, on behalf of the entire Dell Technologies and VxRail teams, I want to thank each of our over 8000 customers, big and small in virtually every industry, who've chosen VxRail to address a broad range of workloads, deploying nearly 100,000 nodes today. Thank you. Our promise to you is that we will add new functionality, improve serviceability, and support new use cases, so that we deliver the most value to you, whether in the Core, at the Edge or for the Cloud. In the Core, VxRail from day one has been a catalyst to accelerate IT transformation. Many of our customers started here and many will continue to leverage VxRail to simply extend and enhance your VMware environment. Now we can support even more demanding applications such as In-Memory databases, like SAP HANA, and more AI and ML applications, with support for more and more powerful GPUs. At the Edge, video surveillance, which also uses GPUs, by the way, is an example of a popular use case leveraging VxRail alongside external storage. And right now we all know the enhanced role that IT is playing. And as it relates to VDI, VxRail has always been a great option for that. In the Cloud, it's all about Kubernetes, and how Dell Technologies Cloud platform, which is VCF on VxRail can deliver consistent infrastructure for both traditional and Cloud native applications. And we're doing that together with VMware. VxRail is the only jointly engineered HCI system built with VMware for VMware environments, designed to enhance the native VMware experience. This joint engineering with VMware and investments in software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers. >> Alright, so Shannon talked a bit about, the important role of IT Of course right now, with the global pandemic going on. It's really, calling in, essential things, putting, platforms to the test. So, I really love to hear what both of you are hearing from customers. Also, VDI, of course, in the early days, it was, HCI-only-does-VDI. Now, we know there are many solutions, but remote work is putting that back front and center. So, Jon, why don't we start with you as the what is (muffled speaking) >> Absolutely. So first of all, Stu, thank you, I want to do a shout out to our VxRail customers around the world. It's really been humbling, inspiring, and just amazing to see The impact of our VxRail customers around the world and what they're having on on human progress here. Just for a few examples, there are genomics companies that we have running VxRail that have rolled out testing at scale. We also have research universities out in the Netherlands, doing the antibody detection. The US Navy has stood up a floating hospital to of course care for those in need. So we are here to help that's been our message to our customers, but it's amazing to see how much they're helping society during this. So just just a pleasure there. But as you mentioned, just to hit on the VDI comments, so to your points too, HCI, VxRail, VDI, that was an initial use case years ago. And it's been great to see how many of our existing VxRail customers have been able to pivot very quickly leveraging VxRail to add and to help bring their remote workforce online and support them with their existing VxRail. Because VxRail is flexible, it is agile, to be able to support those multiple workloads. And in addition to that, we've also rolled out some new VDI bundles to make it simpler for customers more cost effective cater to everything from knowlEdge workers to multimedia workers. You name it, you know from 250, desktops up to 1000. But again, back to your point VxRail, HCI, is well beyond VDI, it crossed the chasm a couple years ago actually. And VDI now is less than a third of the typical workloads, any of our customers out there, it supports now a range of workloads that you heard from Shannon, whether it's video surveillance, whether it's general purpose, all the way to mission critical applications now with SAP HAN. So, this has changed the game for sure. But the range of work loads and the flexibility of the actual rules which really helping our existing customers during this pandemic. >> Yeah, I agree with you, Jon, we've seen customers really embrace HCI for a number of workloads in their environments, from the ones that we sure all knew and loved back in the initial days of HCI. Now, the mission critical things now to Cloud native workloads as well, and the sort of the efficiencies that customers are able to get from HCI. And specifically, VxRail gives them that ability to pivot. When these, shall we say unexpected circumstances arise? And I think that that's informing their their decisions and their opinions on what their IP strategies look like as they move forward. They want that same level of agility, and ability to react quickly with their overall infrastructure. >> Excellent. Now I want to get into the announcements. What I want my team actually, your team gave me access to the CIO from the city of Amarillo, so maybe they can dig up that footage, talk about how fast they pivoted, using VxRail to really spin up things fast. So let's hear from the announcement first and then definitely want to share that that customer story a little bit later. So let's get to the actual news that Shannon's going to share. >> Okay, now what's new? I am pleased to announce a number of exciting updates and new platforms, to further enable IT modernization across Core, Edge and Cloud. I will cover each of these announcements in more detail, demonstrating how only VxRail can offer the breadth of platform configurations, automation, orchestration and Lifecycle Management, across a fully integrated hardware and software full stack with consistent, simplified operations to address the broadest range of traditional and modern applications. I'll start with hybrid Cloud and recap what you may have seen in the Dell Technologies Cloud announcements just a few weeks ago, related to VMware Cloud foundation on VxRail. Then I'll cover two brand new VxRail hardware platforms and additional options. And finally circle back to talk about the latest enhancements to our VxRail HCI system software capabilities for Lifecycle Management. Let's get started with our new Cloud offerings based on VxRail. VxRail is the HCI foundation for Dell Technologies, Cloud Platform, bringing automation and financial models, similar to public Cloud to On-premises environments. VMware recently introduced Cloud foundation for Delta, which is based on vSphere 7.0. As you likely know by now, vSphere 7.0 was definitely an exciting and highly anticipated release. In keeping with our synchronous release commitment, we introduced VxRail 7.0 based on vSphere 7.0 in late April, which was within 30 days of VMware's release. Two key areas that VMware focused on we're embedding containers and Kubernetes into vSphere, unifying them with virtual machines. And the second is improving the work experience for vSphere administrators with vSphere Lifecycle Manager or VLCM. I'll address the second point a bit in terms of how VxRail fits in in a moment for VCF 4 with Tom Xu, based on vSphere 7.0 customers now have access to a hybrid Cloud platform that supports native Kubernetes workloads and management, as well as your traditional VM-based workloads. So containers are now first class citizens of your private Cloud alongside traditional VMs and this is now available with VCF 4.0, on VxRail 7.0. VxRail's tight integration with VMware Cloud foundation delivers a simple and direct path not only to the hybrid Cloud, but also to deliver Kubernetes at Cloud scale with one complete automated platform. The second Cloud announcement is also exciting. Recent VCF for networking advancements have made it easier than ever to get started with hybrid Cloud, because we're now able to offer a more accessible consolidated architecture. And with that Dell Technologies Cloud platform can now be deployed with a four-node configuration, lowering the cost of an entry level hybrid Cloud. This enables customers to start smaller and grow their Cloud deployment over time. VCF and VxRail can now be deployed in two different ways. For small environments, customers can utilize a consolidated architecture which starts with just four nodes. Since the management and workload domains share resources in this architecture, it's ideal for getting started with an entry level Cloud to run general purpose virtualized workloads with a smaller entry point. Both in terms of required infrastructure footprint as well as cost, but still with a Consistent Cloud operating model. For larger environments where dedicated resources and role-based access control to separate different sets of workloads is usually preferred. You can choose to deploy a standard architecture which starts at eight nodes for independent management and workload domains. A standard implementation is ideal for customers running applications that require dedicated workload domains that includes Horizon, VDI, and vSphere with Kubernetes. >> Alright, Jon, there's definitely been a lot of interest in our community around everything that VMware is doing with vSphere 7.0. understand if you wanted to use the Kubernetes piece, it's VCF as that so we've seen the announcements, Dell, partnering in there it helps us connect that story between, really the VMware strategy and how they talk about Cloud and where does VxRail fit in that overall, Delta Cloud story? >> Absolutely. So first of all Stu, the VxRail course is integral to the Delta Cloud strategy. it's been VCF on VxRail equals the Delta Cloud platform. And this is our flagship on prem Cloud offering, that we've been able to enable operational consistency across any Cloud, whether it's On-prem, in the Edge or in the public Cloud. And we've seen the Dell tech Cloud Platform embraced by customers for a couple key reasons. One is it offers the fastest hybrid Cloud deployment in the market. And this is really, thanks to a new subscription offer that we're now offering out there where in less than 14 days, it can be still up and running. And really, the Dell tech Cloud does bring a lot of flexibility in terms of consumption models, overall when it comes to VxRail. Secondly, I would say is fast and easy upgrades. This is what VxRail brings to the table for all workloads, if you will, into especially critical in the Cloud. So the full automation of Lifecycle Management across the hardware and software stack across the VMware software stack, and in the Dell software and hardware supporting that, together, this enables essentially the third thing, which is customers can just relax. They can be rest assured that their infrastructure will be continuously validated, and always be in a continuously validated state. And this is the kind of thing that those three value propositions together really fit well, with any on-prem Cloud. Now you take what Shannon just mentioned, and the fact that now you can build and run modern applications on the same VxRail infrastructure alongside traditional applications. This is a game changer. >> Yeah, I love it. I remember in the early days talking with Dunn about CI, how does that fit in with Cloud discussion and the line I've used the last couple years is, modernize the platform, then you can modernize the application. So as companies are doing their full modernization, then this plays into what you're talking about. All right, we can let Shannon continue, we can get some more before we dig into some more analysis. >> That's good. >> Let's talk about new hardware platforms and updates. that result in literally thousands of potential new configuration options. covering a wide breadth of modern and traditional application needs across a range of the actual use cases. First up, I am incredibly excited to announce a brand new Dell EMC VxRail series, the D series. This is a ruggedized durable platform that delivers the full power of VxRail for workloads at the Edge in challenging environments or for space constrained areas. VxRail D series offers the same compelling benefits as the rest of the VxRail portfolio with simplicity, agility and lifecycle management. But in a lightweight short depth at only 20 inches, it's adorable form factor that's extremely temperature-resilient, shock resistant, and easily portable. It even meets milspec standards. That means you have the full power of lifecycle automation with VxRail HCI system software and 24 by seven single point of support, enabling you to rapidly react to business needs, no matter the location or how harsh the conditions. So whether you're deploying a data center at a mobile command base, running real-time GPS mapping on the go, or implementing video surveillance in remote areas, you can ensure availability, integrity and confidence for every workload with the new VxRail ruggedized D series. >> All right, Chad we would love for you to bring us in a little bit that what customer requirement for bringing this to market. I remember seeing, Dell servers ruggedized, of course, Edge, really important growth to build on what Jon was talking about, Cloud. So, Chad, bring us inside, what was driving this piece of the offering? >> Sure Stu. Yeah, yeah, having been at the hardware platforms that can go out into some of these remote locations is really important. And that's being driven by the fact that customers are looking for compute performance and storage out at some of these Edges or some of the more exotic locations. whether that's manufacturing plants, oil rigs, submarine ships, military applications, places that we've never heard of. But it's also about extending that operational simplicity of the the sort of way that you're managing your data center that has VxRails you're managing your Edges the same way using the same set of tools. You don't need to learn anything else. So operational simplicity is absolutely key here. But in those locations, you can take a product that's designed for a data center where definitely controlling power cooling space and take it some of these places where you get sand blowing or seven to zero temperatures, could be Baghdad or it could be Ketchikan, Alaska. So we built this D series that was able to go to those extreme locations with extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme altitude, but still offer that operational simplicity. Now military is one of those applications for the rugged platform. If you look at the resistance that it has to heat, it operates at a 45 degrees Celsius or 113 degrees Fahrenheit range, but it can do an excursion up to 55 C or 131 degrees Fahrenheit for up to eight hours. It's also resistant to heat sand, dust, vibration, it's very lightweight, short depth, in fact, it's only 20 inches deep. This is a smallest form factor, obviously that we have in the VxRail family. And it's also built to be able to withstand sudden shocks certified to withstand 40 G's of shock and operation of the 15,000 feet of elevation. Pretty high. And this is sort of like wherever skydivers go to when they want the real thrill of skydiving where you actually need oxygen to, to be for that that altitude. They're milspec-certified. So, MIL-STD-810G, which I keep right beside my bed and read every night. And it comes with a VxRail stick hardening package is packaging scripts so that you can auto lock down the rail environment. And we've got a few other certifications that are on the roadmap now for naval shock requirements. EMI and radiation immunity often. >> Yeah, it's funny, I remember when we first launched it was like, "Oh, well everything's going to white boxes. "And it's going to be massive, "no differentiation between everything out there." If you look at what you're offering, if you look at how public Clouds build their things, but I called it a few years or is there's a pure optimization. So you need to scale, you need similarities but you know you need to fit some, very specific requirements, lots of places, so, interesting stuff. Yeah, certifications, always keep your teams busy. Alright, let's get back to Shannon to view on the report. >> We are also introducing three other hardware-based additions. First, a new VxRail E Series model based on where the first time AMD EPYC processors. These single socket 1U nodes, offer dual socket performance with CPU options that scale from eight to 64 Cores, up to a terabyte of memory and multiple storage options making it an ideal platform for desktop VDI analytics and computer aided design. Next, the addition of the latest Nvidia Quadro RTX GPUs brings the most significant advancement in computer graphics in over a decade to professional work flows. Designers and artists across industries can now expand the boundary of what's possible, working with the largest and most complex graphics rendering, deep learning and visual computing workloads. And Intel Optane DC persistent memory is here, and it offers high performance and significantly increased memory capacity with data persistence at an affordable price. Data persistence is a critical feature that maintains data integrity, even when power is lost, enabling quicker recovery and less downtime. With support for Intel obtain DC persistent memory customers can expand in memory intensive workloads and use cases like SAP HANA. Alright, let's finally dig into our HCI system software, which is the Core differentiation for VxRail regardless of your workload or platform choice. Our joining engineering with VMware and investments in VxRail HCI system software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers. Under the covers, VxRail offers best in class hardware, married with VMware HCI software, either vSAN or VCF. But what makes us different stems from our investments to integrate the two. Dell Technologies has a dedicated VxRail team of about 400 people to build market sell and support a fully integrated hyper converged system. That team has also developed our unique VxRail HCI system software, which is a suite of integrated software elements that extend VMware native capabilities to deliver seamless, automated operational experience that customers cannot find elsewhere. The key components of VxRail HCI system software shown around the arc here that include the extra manager, full stack lifecycle management, ecosystem connectors, and support. I don't have time to get into all the details of these elements today, but if you're interested in learning more, I encourage you to meet our experts. And I will tell you how to do that in a moment. I touched on the LCM being a key feature to the vSphere 7.0 earlier and I'd like to take the opportunity to expand on that a bit in the context of VxRail Lifecycle Management. The LCM adds valuable automation to the execution of updates for customers, but it doesn't eliminate the manual work still needed to define and package the updates and validate all of the components prior to applying them. With VxRail customers have all of these areas addressed automatically on their behalf, freeing them to put their time into other important functions for their business. Customers tell us that Lifecycle management continues to be a major source of the maintenance effort they put into their infrastructure, and then it tends to lead to overburden IT staff, that it can cause disruptions to the business if not managed effectively, and that it isn't the most efficient economically. Automation of Lifecycle Management and VxRail results in the utmost simplicity from a customer experience perspective, and offers operational freedom from maintaining infrastructure. But as shown here, our customers not only realize greater IT team efficiencies, they have also reduced downtime with fewer unplanned outages, and reduced overall cost of operations. With VxRail HCI system software, intelligent Lifecycle Management upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack are automated, keeping clusters and continuously validated states while minimizing risks and operational costs. How do we ensure Continuously validated states for VxRail. VxRail labs execute an extensive, automated, repeatable process on every firmware and software upgrade and patch to ensure clusters are in continuously validated states of the customers choosing across their VxRail environment. The VxRail labs are constantly testing, analyzing, optimizing, and sequencing all of the components in the upgrade to execute in a single package for the full stack. All the while VxRail is backed by Dell EMC's world class services and support with a single point of contact for both hardware and software. IT productivity skyrockets with single click non disruptive upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack without the need to do extensive research and testing. taking you to the next VxRail version of your choice, while always in a continuously validated state. You can also confidently execute automated VxRail upgrades. No matter what hardware generation or node types are in the cluster. They don't have to all be the same. And upgrades with VxRail are faster and more efficient with leapfrogging simply choose any VxRail version you desire. And be assured you will get there in a validated state while seamlessly bypassing any other release in between. Only VxRail can do that. >> All right, so Chad, the lifecycle management piece that Shannon was just talking about is, not the sexiest, it's often underappreciated. There's not only the years of experience, but the continuous work you're doing, reminds me back the early vSAN deployments versus VxRail jointly developed, jointly tested between Dell and VMware. So bring us inside why, 2020 Lifecycle Management still, a very important piece, especially in the VM family line. >> Yes, Stu, I think it's sexy, but, I'm pretty big nerd. (all laughing) Yeah, this is really always been our bread and butter. And in fact, it gets even more important, the larger the deployments come, when you start to look at data centers full of VxRails and all the different hardware software, firmware combinations that could exist out there. It's really the value that you get out of that VxRail HCI system software that Shannon was talking about and how it's optimized around the VMware use case. Very tightly integrated with each VMware component, of course, and the intelligence of being able to do all the firmware, all of the drivers, all the software all together in tremendous value to our customers. But to deliver that we really need to make a fairly large investment. So as Shannon mentioned, we run about 25,000 hours of testing across Each major release for patches, express patches, that's about 7000 hours for each of those. So, obviously, there's a lot of parallelism. And we're always developing new test scenarios for each release that we need to build in as we as we introduce new functionality. And one of the key things that we're able to do, as Shannon mentioned, is to be able to leapfrog releases and get you to that next validated state. We've got about 100 engineers just working on creating and executing those test cases on a continuous basis and obviously, a huge amount of automation. And we've talked about that investment to execute those tests. That's one worth of $60 million of investment in our lab. In fact, we've got just over 2000 VxRail units in our testbed across the US, Shanghai, China and Cork, Ireland. So a massive amount of testing of each of those components to make sure that they operate together in a validated state. >> Yeah, well, absolutely, it's super important not only for the day one, but the day two deployments. But I think this actually a great place for us to bring in that customer that Dell gave me access to. So we've got the CIO of Amarillo, Texas, he was an existing VxRail customer. And he's going to explain what happened as to how he needed to react really fast to support the work-from-home initiative, as well as we get to hear in his words the value of what Lifecycle Management means. So Andrew, if we could queue up that customer segment, please? >> It's been massive and it's been interesting to see the IT team absorb it. As we mature, I think they embrace the ability to be innovative and to work with our departments. But this instance, really justified why I was driving progress. So fervently why it was so urgent today. Three years ago, the answer would have been no. We wouldn't have been in a place where we could adapt With VxRail in place, in a week we spun up hundreds of instant balls. We spun up a 75-person call center in a day and a half, for our public health. We rolled out multiple applications for public health so they could do remote clinics. It's given us the flexibility to be able to roll out new solutions very quickly and be very adaptive. And it's not only been apparent to my team, but it's really made an impact on the business. And now what I'm seeing is those of my customers that work, a little lagging or a little conservative, or understanding the impact of modernizing the way they do business because it makes them adaptable as well. >> Alright, so great, Richard, you talked a bunch about the the efficiencies that that the IT put in place, how about that, that overall just managed, you talked about how fast you spun up these new VDI instances. need to be able to do things much simpler? So how does the overall Lifecycle Management fit into this discussion? >> It makes it so much easier. And in the old environment, one, It took a lot of man hours to make change. It was very disruptive, when we did make change, it overburdened, I guess that's the word I'm looking for. It really overburdened our staff to cause disruption to business. That wasn't cost efficient. And then simple things like, I've worked for multi billion dollar companies where we had massive QA environments that replicated production, simply can't afford that at local government. Having this sort of environment lets me do a scaled down QA environment and still get the benefit of rolling out non disruptive change. As I said earlier, it's allowed us to take all of those cycles that we were spending on Lifecycle Management because it's greatly simplified, and move those resources and rescale them in other areas where we can actually have more impact on the business. It's hard to be innovative when 100% of your cycles are just keeping the ship afloat. >> All right, well, nothing better than hearing it straight from the end user, public sector reacting very fast to the COVID-19. And, if you heard him he said, if this is his, before he had run this project, he would not have been able to respond. So I think everybody out there understands, if I didn't actually have access to the latest technology, it would be much harder. All right, I'm looking forward to doing the CrowdChat letting everybody else dig in with questions and get follow up but a little bit more, I believe one more announcement he can and got for us though. Let's roll the final video clip. >> In our latest software release VxRail 4.7.510, We continue to add new automation and self service features. New functionality enables you to schedule and run upgrade health checks in advance of upgrades, to ensure clusters are in a ready state for the next upgrade or patch. This is extremely valuable for customers that have stringent upgrade windows, as they can be assured the clusters will seamlessly upgrade within that window. Of course, running health checks on a regular basis also helps ensure that your clusters are always ready for unscheduled patches and security updates. We are also offering more flexibility and getting all nodes or clusters to a common release level with the ability to reimage nodes or clusters to a specific VxRail version, or down rev one or more nodes that may be shipped at a higher rate than the existing cluster. This enables you to easily choose your validated state when adding new nodes or repurposing nodes in a cluster. Now, here's your host, Dave Vellante. >> Hi everybody, welcome to this Cube Conversation here in our studios, outside of Boston. My name is Dave Vellante. I'm here with Matt Carroll, who's the CEO of Immuta. Matt, good to see ya. >> Good, nice to have me on. >> So we're going to talk about governance, how to automate governance, data privacy, but let me start with Immuta. What is Immuta, why did you guys start this company? >> Yeah, Immuta is an automated data governance platform. We started this company back in 2014 because we saw a gap in the market to be able to control data. What's happened in the market as changes is that every enterprise wants to leverage their data. Data's the new app. But, governments want to regulate it and consumers want to protect it. These were at odds with one another, so we saw a need of creating a platform that could meet the needs of everyone. To democratize access to data and in the enterprise, but at the same time, provide the necessary controls on the data to enforce any regulation, and ensure that there was transparency as to who is using it and why. >> So let's unpack that a little bit. Just try to dig into the problem here. So we all know about the data explosion, of course, and I often say data used to be a liability, now it's turned into an asset. People used to say get rid of the data, now everybody wants to mine it, and they want to take advantage of it, but that causes privacy concerns for individuals. We've seen this with Facebook and many others. Regulations now come into play, GDPR, different states applying different regulations, so you have all these competing forces. The business guys just want to go and get out to the market, but then the lawyers and the compliance officers and others. So are you attacking that problem? Maybe you could describe that problem a little further and talk about how you guys... >> Yeah, absolutely. As you described, there's over 150 privacy regulations being proposed over 25 states, just in 2019 alone. GDPR has created or opened the flood gates if you will, for people to start thinking about how do we want to insert our values into data? How should people use it? And so, the challenge now is, you're right, your most sensitive data in an enterprise is most likely going to give you the most insight into driving your business forward, creating new revenue channels, and be able to optimize your operational expenses. But the challenge is that consumers have awoken to, we're not exactly sure we're okay with that, right? We signed a YULU with you to just use our data for marketing, but now you're using it for other revenue channels? Why? And so, where Immuta is trying to play in there is how do we give the line of business the ability to access that instantaneously? But also give the CISO, the Chief Information Security Officer, and the governance seems the ability to take control back. So it's a delicate balance between speed and safety. And I think what's really happening in the market is we used to think about security from building firewalls, we invested in physical security controls around managing external adversaries from stealing our data. But now it's not necessarily someone trying to steal it, it's just potentially misusing it by accident in the enterprise. And the CISO is having to step in and provide that level of control. And it's also the collision of the cloud and these privacy regulations. Cause now, we have data everywhere, it's not just in our firewalls. And that's the big challenge. That's the opportunity at hand, democratization of data in the enterprise. The problem is data's not all in the enterprise. Data's in the cloud, data's in SaaS, data's in the infrastructure. >> It's distributed by it's very nature. All right, so there's a lot of things I want to follow up on. So first, there's GDPR. When GDPR came out of course, it was May of 2018 I think. It went into effect. It actually came out in 2017, but the penalties didn't take effect till '18. And I thought, okay, maybe this can be a framework for governments around the world and states. It sounds like yeah sort of, but not really. Maybe there's elements of GDPR that people are adopting, but then it sounds like they're putting in their own twists, which is going to be a nightmare for companies. So, are you not seeing a sort of, GDPR becoming this global standard? It sounds like, no. >> I don't think it's going to be necessarily global standard, but I do think the spirit of the GDPR, and at the core of it is, why are you using my data? What was the purpose? So traditionally, when we think about using data, we think about all right, who's the user, and what authorizations do they have, right? But now, there's a third question. Sure, you're authorized to see this data, depending on your role or organization right? But why are you using it? Are you using it for certain business use? Are you using it for personal use? Why are you using this? That's the spirit of GDPR that everyone is adopting across the board. And then of course, each state, or each federal organization is thinking about their unique lens on it, right? And so you're right. This is going to be incredibly complex. And the amount of policies being enforced at query time. I'm in my favorite, let's just say I'm in Tableau or Looker right? I'm just some simple analyst, I'm a young kid, I'm 22, my first job right? And I'm running these queries, I don't know where the data is, right? I don't know what I'm combining. And what we found is on average in these large enterprises, any query at any moment in time, might have over 500 thousand policies that need to be enforced in real time. >> Wow. >> And it's only getting worse. We have to automate it. No human can handle all those edge cases. We have to automate. >> So, I want to get into how you guys actually do that. Before I do, there seems to be... There's a lot of confusion in the marketplace. Take the word data management, data protection. All the backup guys are using that term, the database guys use that term, GOC folks use that term, so there's a lot of confusion there. You have all these adjacent markets coming together. You've got the whole governance risk and compliance space, you've got cyber security, there's privacy concerns, which is kind of two sides of the same coin. How do you see these adjacencies coming together? It seems like you sit in the middle of all that. >> Yeah, welcome to why my marketing budget is getting bigger and bigger. The challenge we're facing now is I think, who owns the problem right? The Chief Data Officer is taking on a much larger role in these organizations, the CISO is taking a much more larger role in reporting up to the board. You have the line of business who now is almost self-sustaining, they don't have to depend on IT as much any longer because of the cloud and because of the new compute layers to make it easier. So who owns it? At the end of the day, where we see it is we think there's a next generation of cyber tools that are coming out. We think that the CISO has to own this. And the reason is that the CISO's job is to protect the enterprise from cyber risk. And at the core of cyber risk is data. And they must own the data problem. The CDO must find the data, and explain what that data is, and make sure it's quality, but it is the CISO that must protect the enterprise from these threats. And so, I see us as part of this next wave of cyber tools that are coming out. There's other companies that are equally in our stratosphere, like BigID, we're seeing AWS with Macy doing sensitive data discovery, Google has their data loss prevention service. So the cloud players are starting to see, hey, we've got to identify sensitive data. There's other startups that are saying hey, we got to identify and catalog sensitive data. And for us, we're saying hey, we need to be able to consume all that cataloging, understand what's sensitive, and automatically apply policies to ensure that any regulation in that environment is met. >> I want to ask you about the cloud too. So much to talk to you about here, Matt. So, I also wanted to get your perspective on variances within industries. So you mentioned Chief Data Officers. The ascendancy of the Chief Data Officers started in financial services, healthcare, and government where we had highly regulation industries. And now it's sort of seeped into more commercial. But it terms of those regulated industries, take healthcare for example. There are specific nuances. Can you talk about what you're seeing in terms of industry variance. >> Yeah, it's a great point. Starting with like, healthcare. What does it mean to be HIPPA compliant anymore? There are different types of devices now where I can point it at your heartbeat from a distance away and I can have 99 percent accuracy of identifying you, right? It takes three data points in any data set to identify 87 percent of US citizens. If I have your age, sex, location, I can identify you. So, what does it mean anymore to be HIPPA compliant? So the challenge is how do we build guarantees of trust that we've de-identified these DESA's, cause we have to use it, right? No one's going to go into a hospital and say, "You know what, I don't want you to say my life. "Cause I want my data protected," right? No one's ever going to say that. So the challenges we face now across these regulated industries is the most sensitive data sets are critical for those businesses to operate. So there has to be a compromise. So, what we're trying to do in these organizations is help them leverage their data and build levels of proportionality, to access that right? So, the key isn't to stop people from using data. The key is to build the controls necessary to leverage a small bit of the data. Let's just say, we've made it indistinguishable. You can only ask Agriculture and Statistics the question. Well, you know what, we actually found some really interesting things there, we need to be a little bit more useful, it's this trade-off between privacy and utility. It's a pendulum that swings back and forth. As someone proves I need more of this, you can swing it, or just mask it. I need more of it? All right, we'll just redact some of the certain things. Nope, this is really important, it's going to save someone's life. Okay, completely unmasked, you have the raw data. But it's that control that's necessary in these environments, that's what's missing. You know, we came out of the US Intelligence community. We understood this better than anyone. Because highly regulated, very sensitive data, but we knew we needed the ability to rapidly control. Well is this just a hunch, or is this a 9-11 event? And you need the ability to switch like that. That's the difference and so, healthcare is going through a change of, we have all these new algorithms. Like Facebook the other day said, hey, we have machine learning algorithms that can look at MRI scans, and we're going to be better than anyone in the world at identifying these. Do you feel good about giving your data to Facebook? I don't know, but we can maybe provide guaranteed anonymization to them, to prove to the world they're going to do right. That's where we have to get to. >> Well, this is huge, especially for the consumer, cause you just gave several examples. Facebook's going to know a lot about me, a mobile device, a Fit Bit, and yet, if I want to get access to my own medical records, it's like Fort Knox to try to get, please, give this to my insurance company. You know, you got to go through all these forms. So, you've got those diverging objectives and so, as a consumer, I want to be able to trust that when I say yes you can use it, go, and I can get access to it, and other can get access to it. I want to understand exactly what it is that you guys do, what you sell. Is it software, is it SAS, and then let's get into how it works. So what is it? >> Yeah, so we're a software platform. We deploy into any infrastructure, but it is not multi-tenant so, we can deploy on any cloud, or on premises for any customer, and we do that with customers across the world. But if you think about at the core of what is Immuta, think of Immuta as a system of record for the CISO or the line of business where I can connect to any data, on any infrastructure, on any compute layer, and we connect into over 61 different storage platforms. We then have built a UI where lawyers... We actually have three lawyers as employees that act as product managers to help any lawyer of any stature take what's on paper, these regulations, these rules and policies, and they digitize it essentially, in active code. So they can build any policy they want on any data in the ecosystem, in the enterprise, and enforce it globally without having to write any code. And then because we're this plane where you can connect any tool to this data, and enforce any regulation because we're the man in the middle, we can audit who is using what data and why. In every action, in any change in policy. So, if you think about it, it's connect any tool to any data, control it, any regulation, and prove compliance in a court of law. >> So you can set the policy at the data set level? >> Correct. >> And so, how does one do that? Can you automate that on the creation of that data set? I mean you've got you know, dependencies. How does that all work? >> Yeah, what's a really interesting part of our secret sauce is that one, we could do that at the column level, we can do it at the row level, we can do it at the cell level. >> So very granular. >> Very, very granular. This is something again, we learned from the US Intelligence community, that we have to have very fine grained access to every little bit of the data. The reason is that, especially in the age of data, is people are going to combine many data sets together. The challenge isn't enforcing the policy on a static data set, the challenge is enforcing the policy across three data sets where you merge three pieces of data together, who have conflicting policies. What do you do then? That's the beauty of our system. We deal with that policy inheritance, we manage that lineage of the policy, and can tell you here's what the policy will be. >> In other words, you can manage to the highest common denominator as an example. >> Or we can automate it to the lowest common denominator, where you can work in projects together recognizing hey, we're going to bring someone into the project that's not going to have the level of access. Everyone else will automatically change it to the lowest common denominator. But then you share that work with another team and it'll automatically be brought to the highest common denominator. And we've built all these work flows in. That was what was missing and that's why I call it a system of record. It's really a symbiotic relationship between IT, the data owner, governance, the CISO, who are trying to protect the data, and the consumer, and all they want to do is access the data as fast as possible to make better, more informed decisions. >> So the other mega-trend you have is obviously, the super power of machine intelligence, or artificial intelligence, and then you've got edge devices and machine to machine communication, where it's just an explosion of IP addresses and data, and so, it sounds like you guys can attack that problem as well. >> Any of this data coming in on any system, the idea is that eventually it's going to land somewhere, right? And you got to protect it. We call that like rogue data, right? This is why I said earlier, when we talk about data, we have to start thinking about it as it's not in some building anymore. Data's everywhere. It's going to be on a cloud infrastructure, it's going to be on premises, and it's likely, in the future, going to be on many distributed data centers around the world cause business is global. And so, what's interesting to us is no matter where the data's sitting, we can protect it, we can connect to it, and we allow people to access it. And that's the key thing is not worrying about how to lock down your physical infrastructure, it's about logically separating it. And that's why what differentiates us from other people is one, we don't copy the data, right? That's the always the barrier for these types of platforms. We leave the data where it is. The second is we take all those regulations and we can actually, at query time, push it down to where that data is. So rather than bring it to us, we push the policy to the data. And what that does is that's what allows us, what differentiates us from everyone else is, it allows us to guarantee that protection, no matter where the data's living. >> So you're essentially virtualizing the data? >> Yeah, yeah. It's virtual views of data, but it's not all the data. What people have to realize is in the day of apps, we cared about storage. We put all the data into a database, we built some services on top of it and a UI, and it was controlled that way, right? You had all the nice business logic to control it. In the age of data, right? Data is the new app, right? We have all these automation tools, Data Robot, and H20, and Domino, and Tableau's building all these automation work flows. >> The robotic process automation. >> Yeah, RPA, UI Path, the Work Fusion, right? They're making it easier and easier for any user to connect to any data and then automate the process around it. They don't need an app to build a unique work flows, these new tools do that for them. The key is getting to the data. And the challenge with the supply chain of data is time to data is the most critical aspect of that. Cause, the time to insight is perishable. And so, what I always tell people, a little story, I came from the government, I worked in Baghdad, we had 42 minutes to know whether or not a bad guy in the environment, we could go after him. After that, that data was perishable, right? We didn't know where he was. It's the same thing in the real world. It's like imagine if Google told you, well, in 42 minutes it might be a good time to go 495. (laughter) It's not very useful, I need to know the information now. That's the key. What we see is policy enforcement and regulations are the key barrier of entry. So our ability to rapidly, with no latency, be able to connect anyone to that data and enforce those policies where the data lives, that's the critical nature. >> Okay, so you can apply the policies and you do it quickly, and so now you can help solve the problem. You mentioned a cloud before, or on prem. What is the strategy there with regard to various clouds and how do you approach multi-clouds? >> I think cloud is what used to be an infrastructure as a service game, is now becoming a compute game. I think large, regulated enterprises, government, healthcare, financial services, insurance, are all moving to cloud now in a different way. >> What do you mean by that? Cause people think infrastructure as service, they'll say oh that's compute storage and some networking. What do you mean by that? >> I think there's a whole new age of software that's being laid on top of the availability of compute and the availability of storage. That's companies like Databricks, companies like Snowflake, and what they're doing is dramatically changing how people interact with data. The availability zones, the different types of features, the ability to rip and replace legacy warehouses and main frames. It's changing the ability to not just access, but also the types of users that could even come on to leverage this data. And so these enterprises are now thinking through, "How do I move my entire infrastructure of data to them? "And what are these new capabilities "that I could get out of that?" Which, that is just happening now. A lot of people have been thinking, "Oh, this has been happening over the past five years," no, the compute game is now the new war. I used to think of like, Big Data, right? Big Data created, everyone started to understand, "Ah, if we've got our data assets together, "we can get value." Now they're thinking, "All right, let's move beyond that." The new cloud at our currents works is Snowflake and Databricks. What they're thinking about is, "How do I take all your meta-data "and allow anyone to connect any BI tool, "any data science tool, and provide highly performance, "and highly dependable compute services "to process petabytes of data?" It's pretty fantastic. >> And very cost efficient and being able to scale, compute independent of storage, from an architectural perspective. A lot of people claim they can do that, but it doesn't scale the same way. >> Yeah, when you're talking about... Cause that's the thing is you got to remember, these financial systems especially, they depend on these transactions. They cannot go down and they're processing petabytes of data. That's what the new war is over, is that data in the compute layer. >> And the opportunity for you is that data that can come from anywhere, it's not sitting in a God box, where you can enforce policies on that corpus. You don't know where it's coming from. >> We want to be invisible to that right? You're using Snowflake, it's just automatically enforced. You're using Databricks, it's automatically enforced. All these policies are enforced in flight. No one should even truly care about us. We just want to allow you to use the data the way you're used to using it. >> And you do this, this secret sauce you talked about is math, it's artificial intelligence? >> It's math. I wish I could say it was like super fancy, unsupervised neural nets or what not, it's 15 years of working in the most regulated, sticky environments. We learned about very simple novel ways of pushing it down. Great engineering's always simple. But what we've done is... At query time, what's really neat is we figured a way to take user attributes from identity management system and combine that with a purpose, and then what we do is we've built all these libraries to connect into all these dispert storage and compute systems, to push it in there. The nice thing about that is prior to this what people were doing, was making copies. They'd go to the data engineering team and they'd say hey, "I need to ETL this "and get a copy and it'll be anatomized." Think about that for a second. One, the load on your production systems, of all these copies, all the time, right? The second is CISO, the surface area. Now you've got all this data that in a snapshot in time, is legal and ethical, might change tomorrow. And so, now you've got an increase surface area of risk. Like that no-copy aspect. So the pushing it down and then the no-copy aspect really changed the game for enterprises. >> And you've got providence issues, like you say. You've got governance and compliance. >> And imagine trying, if someone said to you, imagine Congress said hey, "Any data source that you've processed "over the past five years, I want to know if "there was these three people in any of these data sources "and if there were, who touched that data "and why did they touch it?" >> Yeah and storage is cheap, but there's unintended consequences. People are, management isn't. >> We just don't have a unified way to look at all of the logs cross listed. >> So we started to talk about cloud and then I took you down a different path. But you offer your software on any cloud, is that right? >> Yeah, so right now, we are in production on Immuta's Marketplace. And that is a managed service, so you can go deploy in there, it'll go into your VPC, and we can manage the updates for you, we have no insight into your infrastructure, but we can push those updates, it'll automatically update, so you're getting our quarterly releases, we release every season. But yeah, we started with AWBS, and then we will grow out. We see cloud is just too ubiquitous. Currently, we still support though, Bigquery, Data Praq, we support Azure, Data Light Storage version two, as well as Azure Databricks. But you can get us through Immuta's Marketplace. We're also investing in ReInvent, we'll be out there in Vegas in a couple weeks. It's a big event for us just because obviously, the government has a very big stake in AWBS, but also commercial customers. It's been a massive endeavor to move. We've seen lots of infrastructure. Most of our deals now are on cloud infrastructure. >> Great, so tell us about the company. You've raised, I think in a Series B, about 28 million to date. Maybe you could give us the head count, and whatever you can share about momentum, maybe customer examples. >> Yeah, so we've raised 32 million to date. >> 32 million. >> From some great investors. The company's about 70 people now. So not too big, but not small anymore. Just this year, at this point, I haven't closed my fiscal year, so I don't want to give too much, but we've doubled our ARR and we've tripled our LOGO count this year alone and we've still got one more quarter here. We just started our fourth quarter. And some customer cases, the way I think about our business is I love healthcare, I love government, I love finance. To give you some examples is like, COGNO is a really great example. COGNO and what they're trying to solve is can they predict where a child is on the autism spectrum? And they're trying to use machine learning to be able to narrow these children down so that they can see patterns as to how a provider, a therapist is helping these families give these kids the skills to operate in the real world. And so it's like this symbiotic relationship utilizing software, surveys and video and what not, to help connect these kids that are in similar areas of the spectrum, to help say hey, this is a successful treatment, right? The problem with that is we need lots of training data. And this is children, one, two, this is healthcare, and so, how do you guarantee HIPPA compliance? How do you get through FDA trials, through third party, blind testing? And still continue to validate and retrain your models, while protecting the identity of these children? So we provide a platform where we can anonymize all the data for them, we can guarantee that there's blind studies, where the company doesn't have access to certain subsets of the data. We can also then connect providers to gain access to the HIPPA data as needed. We can automate the whole thing for them. And they're a startup too, there are 100 people. But imagine if you were a startup in this health-tech industry and you had to invest in the backend infrastructure to handle all of that. It's too expensive. What we're unlocking for them, I mean yes, it's great that they're HIPPA compliant and all that, that's what we want right? But the more important thing is like, we're providing a value add to innovate in areas utilizing machine learning, that regulations would've stymied, right? We're allowing startups in that ecosystem to really push us forward and help those families. >> Cause HIPPA compliance is table stay compulsory. But now you're talking about enabling new business models. >> Yeah, yeah exactly. >> How did you get into all this? You're CEO, you're business savvy, but it sounds like you're pretty technical as well. What's your background? >> Yeah I mean, so I worked in the intelligence community before this. And most of my focus was on how do we take data and be able to leverage it, either for counter-terrorism missions, to different non-kinetic operations. And so, where I kind of grew up in is in this age of, think about billions of dollars in Baghdad. Where I learned is that through the computing infrastructure there, everything changed. 2006 Baghdad created this boom of technology. We had drones, right? We had all these devices on our trucks that were collecting information in real time and telling us things. And then we started building computing infrastructure and it burst Hadoop. So, I kind of grew up in this era of Big Data. We were collecting it all, we had no idea what to do with it. We had nowhere to process it. And so, I kind of saw like, there's a problem here. If we can find the unique little, you know, nuggets of information out of that, we can make some really smart decisions and save lives. So once I left that community, I kind of dedicated myself to that. The birth of this company again, was spun out of the US Intelligence community and it was really a simple problem. It was, they had a bunch of data scientists that couldn't access data fast enough. So they couldn't solve problems at the speed they needed to. It took four to six months to get to data, the mission said they needed it in less than 72 hours. So it was orthogonal to one another, and so it was very clear we had to solve that problem fast. So that weird world of very secure, really sensitive, but also the success that we saw of using data. It was so obvious that we need to democratize access to data, but we need to do it securely and we need to be able to prove it. We work with more lawyers in the intelligence community than you could ever imagine, so the goal was always, how do we make a lawyer happy? If you figure that problem out, you have some success and I think we've done it. >> Well that's awesome in applying that example to the commercial business world. Scott McNeely's famous for saying there is no privacy in the internet, get over it. Well guess what, people aren't going to get over it. It's the individuals that are much more concerned with it after the whole Facebook and fake news debacle. And as well, organizations putting data in the cloud. They need to govern their data, they need that privacy. So Matt, thanks very much for sharing with us your perspectives on the market, and the best of luck with Immuta. >> Thanks so much, I appreciate it. >> No, that makes total sense. You've got me thinking a little bit. You see some of this right now going on general fitness and these thirty six minute classes will fit thirty six is awesome there. Big group No. One, their trainers. And they do a really good job of it. But the onset of maybe not such, um, high intensity aspects that you're doing. But you're promoting motor patterns, right? So it's not like, Okay, let's train for thirty six minutes. Generally was trained for forty five minutes. Let's train for an hour. But let's have a specific program that we're picking on to develop an athlete and push him in direction. So I mean by that is, I kind of see this in this is my attempt to digest cores. Mind not break it down and bring her with me. I thought you'd like to roost e a seven day period. And then you said in this period, I want to accomplish, you know, thiss five sets off total or five sets of ten reps and back squat and then your micro dose in mind like you, you slice it up, and so all of a sudden it doesn't become a five by ten because fifty total wrapped trying to get you won't take that ten reps here and twenty wraps here and maybe five reps here, and you put it in different ways. So if you look at it holistically, it's this very on the certainly first. See, it looks almost just organized, but looks like a lot happening at once. When you take us back, you look at a full truck, the full pies there, and so people they come and see me one of your workout So they see on Instagram that, oh, it's just Korea Doing, you know, appears to be basic patterns that kind of seem random. But really, you said, Okay, this is my goal. This is what I want from these guys and you're taking a step back. You applied it in a very strategic way. So it's not just people say, Oh, it's a fitness class. No, First off, Micro does seem just That's if I like, you know, a thirty minute workout. It's a thirty minute directed work out with the candle quantifiable goal over Baghdad, a period of time. Is that a fair assessment? I dove into the brain of Cory. No, my deal >> looked like this. Lookit. Let's look at another population. We look at prisoners when they go to the yard. How much time do they have a day? All right, >> You know what, >> Right. That's what I'm saying. Like, it's not a lot like they're locked up in a cell for the whole day. So when they go to the yard, they go ham on whatever's available, it ain't like they got this nice little hole like, Okay, we're going to do from squads. And they were gonna go to bench and they were going to Arlo, and we're going to do no. They pick something that is available and they go ham on it for an hour, and they're on really terrible food and really terrible environments, but tend to get really strong. Okay, well, that makes sense. So and you know what? They do it again the next day and the next day and the next day. So I'm not saying we're trained like prisoners, But what I'm saying is there's a reason why if I was to tell any elite level lifter, OK? All you can do today for thirty minutes is squad. What do you think's gonna happen? They're going to go heavy often. And they're going to be able to be fresh the next day to do the same thing. I mean, no one leaves a power lifting meet the next day saying, Oh, time to go train again. No, their body is trashed, right? Because of all the intensity that they didn't through multiple movements. Same idea, right? All I'm doing is isolating it. So, for instance, I'm looking for a specific response. If I want to train relative string, I want to find a movement that they can move a lot of way, obviously not through a high speed. And that's the movement we're going to do. If I want a absolute velocity, for instance, Woodchuck and Tendo terms, I want them to be very elastic. Reactive owned him to move very, very fast. Then I'm gonna pick a movement, say, like a barbell squad job. Maybe it's a credible swing. Maybe it's throws and then they're going to go ham on that. But if you just take that one isolated lift, I don't care. If you do tend doubles at it, you're not going to be that sword, especially if you've been doing this for over a year. First start the preseason. We gotta look at stress holistically. The biggest stress they have is basketball. So the last thing I'm going to do is beat them down. And here I'm just going to make sure that we'Ll stay on the cart. So you look at our total volume. It looks something like four sets of four. But by the time we're at the end of the season January, February, March, we're hitting our P R's and reason why we're hit Rp. Ours is because we've made this huge reservoir of stress that they're able tto handle. So now practises cut in half. So I have more reserves in the weight room. So that force that's afore we were hitting for those compound movements in preseason. Well, now they look like ten sets of doubles or twelve sets of singles because they have that reservoir. So now we're expressing in a controlled environment faster weights have your weights at the time of year that we're looking for those adaptations so that now we're quote unquote stronger and faster. We're trying to win the championship, not tryingto win it and the summer, which you generally see like thereby sent PR is before they go home and summer. Well, that's great. And then they go into their maintenance program for the season, which last six months. Can you maintain anything for longer than six? No, you can't, like, maybe your oil, but you've not wantto patients, you know? I'm saying so. You know, that's that's where it really came down to is I'm trying to find the best means to produce performance, >> so I'm on times Lower standard. Yeah. Please do not mind around it. So I get it correct. Nowhere earthly it's looking at How do we given work out at that? Fits? The current state needed the athlete, so Okay, there begin the year, right? Their capacity only so localize outside stressors to fit in the workout around the other twenty three hours. Right? And then you're applying a stressor that's heavy enough, but not too light. And you do it. I'm not not overly fatigued them, but at least stimulate them. So you working guide rails? Not a written in stone. A type of thing, >> right? Yeah. So yeah. Yeah. How Basically how I how I keep the best part of the best way to put it is what I've done this year that I haven't done in the past is abuse Tendo Units, I'm just That's my way of just monitoring. How about speed? Okay, Cool, because load is one thing. But once again, how do you move that load now? We're not We're not dicing up like, Oh, it's point seven. You're supposed to hit point five like up. You know, add thirty kilos or vice versa, right? Like you're not exact. But if you're within a range, it gives me a whole lot of details, all right? And then you're basically all we do from that point is record the wait, not the speed. I just keep them in a certain zone. Stay within this. You, for instance, our strength speed or a relative strength and strength. Speed movements can't go anything more than triples our speed, strength and are absolute velocity. You can't go anything over five reps. If you hit quote unquote those triples or those fives, then the next time you come in, guess what we get to upload if you're not above that was going to stick with the same load. And if you prove it within your early work sex, then we'LL have a little bit alert. But that's our way of day to day, keeping them on the road, if you will. >> No, that makes sense. Do I couldn't agree more. I see it carrying over so well. Universally way you looked at the origins of strength training and we're like Oh, came from Russia and even your ever pashanski for those people aren't nerds like myself. Russian sports science even started like appeared ization. It's kind of a made up thing, right? So one hundred percent made up haven't made up and it kind of came from the four years cycle of Russia itself. America takes that andan. What happens is you get the the non athlete world's intelligent public world. Everything is monetized, right? So it's like, Okay, we know that training really heavy every days and probably a good. So we're going to make these things called, you know, in small little workouts that might last twenty five minutes are our six minutes, you know, have a shrink it as Lois and possibly can. But no, let's make it not necessarily difficult, but challenging. Um and we make money office. We labeled something different and you see different fitness fads come off when I come and go. But a lot of because I got the capitalistic market monetization. People try to make money off of things. But that really does him from, like the athletic side. If you're thinking about Hey, I'm Cory. I'm dealing with Alex. I don't know how they're going to walk into my door today. I don't know if they're going to be high lower, you know, just normal. How can I then give myself the opportunity to provide environment where they can work successfully and and what you do, which is really cool, And I find it really inspiring kind of cheesy word. But you give a lot of ownership to all your athletes when it comes to selection of exercises and movements. And I find that to be something that we don't say. We as in the general world of anything sports, science and fitness don't always like to do. Um, and you say Okay, you know, credit. I'm wrong, Corey to I don't want take worth mountains, him incorrectly. Just so you know, here's a pattern and maybe select one of these three exercises that you feel like gets you ready. And what's so great about that? It removes the constraints of this exercise is the best. You know, this is the golden exercise and really, I mean you and I know it, but we want to feel good. We would always have a bench press when I came in town, but absolutely, it's like, Okay, let's let's really understand that it's not really a difference between Aback Squad versus upfront squad versus may be something of a trap, our poll, especially if you're using it to get the athlete ready. So talk. If you could talk a little bit about how you decide some of that and what led you down that path and giving those athletes that kind of ownership and understanding of you know, I want to do this versus I have to >> do this right? I mean, to me, autonomy is everything, because what you generally see and it's to me, it's almost criminal is everyone gets the piece of paper. They fill it out with me you get, then you do the same thing, right? You get that piece of paper the next day, fill it out. Get that piece of paper. Next thing, fill it out. And then four years later you go. Well, I'm leaving now. Where's my piece of paper For the rest of my life. Oh, so you didn't really learn how to train, did you? You didn't really learn what worked for you. You didn't really In the really issue is like I deal with crazy, different levers. I mean, I got guys that are five eight all the way to seven foot. So you can't tell me there's a golden exercise that it doesn't exist in my world. >> I >> like knowing you're on. I would love to have everybody do the exact same thing. They love doing it. And they all do it very, very well so that I can have my little lab and I can have my control and I can show. Hey, guys, look how much better we got this year because of my implementation. Bax Wass What? What does that say? That says that I care more about what I'm doing more than what's best for that athlete and what they're doing if you really the real reason why I got to this autonomy stage is when I realized what I do is such a small percentage of their overall success and the reason why I say that I'm not necessarily saying I agree with hit or disagree with Hit, but you could have a hit program. You could have an Olympic based program. You could have your holistic based program, whatever you want to say, and I see the hit program Win a national championship and I'm like, what happened? Like I don't agree with that program, but they won well, it's all about it's all about the dude's. So if I can give quote unquote my dudes the best training environment that works for them. So what I mean by that is Look, here's a squad. You hate doing back squats because the bar on your back, it's jerking the hell out of your shoulders because you don't like to be an external rotation will. Then maybe I'm just going to hate. How about this Bar safety squad bar that feel better? Cool court. My knees are super tender away. It's basketball. Everybody's needs at some point this season, every a super tender last thing I'm going to do is put them in an environment. Teo, flame up those tendons so that they can't perform at a higher level on the basketball court. So what are we going to do? Well, let's Hinch, how about we just do some already? L stay. How about we do some kettle bell swings? Maybe some tribe are dead. Lift. It doesn't necessarily have to be this golden exercise that everybody fits in. And I think really what it stands from is that strength coaches got approved to their sport coaches that we'll look at, our numbers go up and they have to have a control to do that. And the exact opposite. It's a sport. Coaches coming down saying one of our guys bench. Well, if our sport coaches cares so much about bench press, well, then what do you think I got to do? Well, I gotta bench my guys so we could get those numbers so I could look like, you know, I'm validated my job. Well, how about we take something that's oh, universally accepted. So how about a counter movement? Jump out force plate. Now, I'm not saying everybody has forced plates, but you could just use jump height. Friend sits. Who cares how you got there? As long as you are trending right, that's all that matters. Why should we be fixated to a certain methodology or a certain pattern or not? Pattern but exercise. Just give them a pattern, let him choose. And to be honest with you, if it feels right, it's going to fly, right? If it feels good to do attract bar squat, opposed to doing a front squat well, they're probably gonna put more load and they put more load that I'm going to get the stress response adaptation. If I don't like the front squat because it's choking me the hell out. Well, then I'm probably not going to put his much load on it. Now, I have a negative connotation now have all these internal stress is going on, and then I'm gonna have a weird as look atyou, saying I don't like what we're doing in here. So now you think the quote unquote Byeon is going to be there. So now we're not getting any stresses that are going to give me that positive adaptation I'm looking for. So at the end of the day, if I can give them the education tto, learn how to do these movements and how to choose for themselves, well, then now it's not just what they did here for four years. I just gave them skills for the rest of their life. And if they're good enough to play pros now, they can take that and they can articulate it to the next coaching stuff so they could do a better >> job. No, that's that's awesome, man like this. A lot of things I want. I head into their I'LL keep it all Diamond all nine hundred promised. But I couldn't agree more and one of things that you say, you know, let's have a king P I They said jump high, for example, a point of reference. Then let's not care what we d'Oh, to the extent I mean not care. But let's not constrain ourselves of what we dio in order to improve that k p I. So the way I think about it, it's kind of like you ever use waze before that? Yes, that we got right. It knows to things and knows where you are. It knows where you were. If you're driving, it knows where you're going. Road. And then as okay, all I care about getting to point B So it will take you on detours left and right. Little Granny is driving slow in front of you for the pothole. If whatever is going to find the best way to get there, it doesn't care how it gets there, right, Right. And so work that it's say, OK, let's get the sevens environment where we can learn. And we know we need to get to be for me. And I'm not gonna say to go in a straight line because you might go through building and crashing hit pedestrians. We're gonna find a way to get to be. We're going to find a way that makes sense for the athlete and yourself. So my teaching them, you know, let's have you like and learn to do some of these movements then don't know taking a left at this next stop light to get to point B will be quicker than you saying go straight because they're the one in the driver's seat, right? And if that educational environment where you start to look at this a really complex system, her planting a really simple abie model and apply it to something as complex as the human body so that we can learn. And the example I give. It's like, you know, the ways part like, that's the more complex and assumptions we make more room for aeri half All right, we'Ll screw this. We assume that the sumo gets here. Well, if we assume in order to get to A to B, we got a one a two a three a four, a five. But any point on the line that, you know, assumption breaks, we don't get to be all right, you guys, you stuck at a whatever and doing. You know, we have to follow this waterfall method. It's very much a living method where things come in, things come out, things make you change. But you know what? You want to go? I >> mean, it's we work in team sports. Like the only objective we are the only objective that matters is wins and losses, period. Right? So if I wasn't a stopwatch sport, maybe my mind would change a little bit, right? Maybe I got okay. We need to drift towards this because literally it's did you get faster? Did you not get faster? Right? Swimming whatever you're doing, maybe these are the things we need to do more often to make that happen. But I'm dealing with incompetent. I mean great human beings, but just physically incompetent. There's still learning about their bodies were still growing into their bodies. I think it's the most arrogance thing that a strength coach could do is to say, Here's a program that's gonna get you better for six weeks. What? What is that? Even here's a block that's going to get youto point me. How do you know Like, till you know Saddamist like, can you honestly tell me that following this six week plan is doing that? Hey, they got sport practice. They got exams, they got pick up your tell me none of those factors could potentially there off your little plan or that your little plan can go up. They're KP eyes, if you will, or their Their goal is just a play basketball. So that to me, that's where as this thing, it's like the most arrogant thing in our field and it just drives me up the wall. But the other day, like I got a sport coach who has all the faith in the world of me gives me the keys to the castle. He just tells me, Do what you think is best. I I report the numbers that he doesn't even know he needs. That's what's awesome about he's like Chord. I just trust you like these were things that I want to see my guys do. We want a quote unquote play fast. Well, okay, here's some standards that we can set And these Airways that we know we got quote unquote faster. Now, from the technical tactical aspect, that's where you guys come in and you guys got it. Apply what you think is best to make that happen, right? But I gave you the physical requirements. I told you exactly what you need to get done and how we got there. Now you guys apply the technical tactical aspect. And then there we go. Now we have a happy marriage is long as I can supply valuable information. It doesn't matter what the information ISS, and that's where everybody gets stuck on these controlled environment numbers like like looking, swatting inventions like Who cares? Like Who cares about written load? Load gets you to here right after that, it's all about It's all about speed. It's all about rhythm coordination, your vestibular system that there's so many things that go into making. You better not just, uh, put three fifteen on the back squat suite. No, >> that's you know. Yes, yes, I agree. I'm not going to deviate too far. My ma, you know how I work or my mind races and I don't go in straight lines. I apologized immediately. Good. I was thinking about your friend mentioned earlier. It was everything that this lately, too. People who've been the private sector's I work in personal training, and I worked in exercise clinic for two and a half years. Iowa State, where don't older adults randall off cool testing on them. But ultimately they showed up because they enjoy it. And one things that I think we I don't mean We have everybody some people forget is that it needs to be enjoyable back. And when you're in a private sector and you're literally your food is the ability for something to come back to you. Hey, it's really different and you start. You said Okay, you know what exercise and movement do you like, and then you manipulate How do I make that exercise the most effective exercise for that person? And that's what you kind of mentioned with the educational process for your athletes. You're taking this approach. Where? How did you get them to win? Firstly, they gotta want to be here, but they don't want to be who I try hard. And secondly, no Adam, take ownership of these movements. I really like that concept because it's really melting in the world of Hey, you're here. You have to get better. But everyone knows when you want to get better. Vs have to get better, right? The be out a little different and unusual marks Lefton excited to move. I just keep thinking about that from like the private side. That's really where, like the general public, and you could deal with great Alan to deal with a lot of athletes who really want to be there. But unfortunately, majority the world doesn't want to work out like they're they're not interested, and I hate to make an assumption, but it's hard not to think that it's either them not knowing or them intimidated that have to do something in there, right? Right. I'm like that mindset a beam to apply. Okay, let's have an ownership model that drives it, because if you talk to people, her successful personal trainers, they have a way to make sure people come back. Oh, for should join a box in a way that a strength coach you're no environment might not even have to be exposed to just because it's the nature of >> well, for me, like the off season. I mean, when I get a freshman, that's a great thing about basketball. But I get a freshman. I mean, maybe they picked up some weights like a B. There's still just such a greenhorn in the weight room. They don't know what's good and what's bad, right? So, essentially the off season is a little bit of dictatorship like Sorry, I'm to tell you what to do because you don't know shit, right? But the goal is to earn that autonomy as well. So, you know, my guys that are kind of like slaps like for the whole offseason. Well, their leashes a lot tighter like Nah, bro, you're going to do this because I know you need to do this. You have earned the right to have that a top. So I want to make sure that that's, like pretty clear, too, because if you just give autonomy all day and there's going to run over you. But the one aspect that I think that is so important with our autonomy is it's my biggest performance enhancer, and I actually had dated Approve it. Like if I just look at my C M J members from our force plates once again. Yes, there are some maybe eight sets of doubles or six sets of triples or whatever, right? But once again, that is Tendo based, like to a certain agree with most of our movement. So you know, it could be a triple. It could be a double. It could be a single. It depends on where they fall in on along those lines, but essentially the flexibility of the sets and wraps, the unbelievable latitude of the movement pattern that they're doing. But yet counter movement jumps in February. They are p r ng, not season. P R's. I'm talking life top ers Guys that have been here for three years are hidden from nineteen point one to twenty six point four. I can't say names the twenty six point four in February. So what does that say? It says that my biggest performance enhancer is the kids saying I want to do that. Cool. That's what we're going to do. >> No, I love it that zik perfect. If you want to be there, you're intense. Going to be high. You're going to try harder. I heard it put that way and I'll get straight to the point that one look into into exercise probably should do some form of micro dose in to see if you even like it everyone to overdose. How do they start that process if they're not athletes per se how they decide where they began? >> Well, essentially is what do you want to end up like, What's the what's the point beyond ways, right? Do you just want to look aesthetically better? How aesthetically do you want to look? Do you wanna look like a big body voter? Do you want to look like a swimmer? What do you want to look like? And I think that the vein than fan ity. And I mean, that's what drives my basketball players there in tank tops here around. Of course, they want nice arms. Right? So there's certain things that you gotta know. Like, I want to look like this. Now, some of the performance guys, Maybe I wantto sprint faster or jump higher. Like that's a whole another aspect. But we're talking about general population number one. What do you wanna look like? Okay, so if I'm three hundred pounds and I want to lose some body fat for my own general health and I want to, you know, be more presentable, if you will. And smaller clothing. Well, then maybe just walking ten minutes every day, and then you start adding layers to it, So Okay, You know what I mean? Killing these walks. How about we go Stairmaster? Okay, that's a little tougher. Okay, how about we introduce maybe some med ball exercises because that's not necessarily too complex to do that. I can do it through different ranges. It's easy to manipulate. Okay, Now, let's take a dumb bill or kettle bill. Then we work our way to a bar bill and now. Oh, man, what do you know? I just dropped one hundred pounds and in them. Oh, before all of that eating. But like, we're just talking about the physical aspects, but as far as that, where do you want to be? Okay, I want to look like Brad Pitt. OK, for one, get plastic surgery. But if you want to look cool air at Brad Pitt and Fight Club Okay, well, these are the things that I need to do. So let's reverse into near the process, okay? He cut his little jack, so that means he's got muscular strength. OK, cool. So that means weights are going to get involved at some point we'll he got really lean for this too. So my general fitness sucks. Maybe I just need to start with walking. Maybe a jump rope, maybe just medicine Ball toss is something that's super easy. The number one. What's going to make me more consistent? What consistency is goingto win? It's not. They'll work out you do that's going to make you go from a counter movement jumped a nineteen point one to twenty six point for It's the consistency that got you there. All right. That was a two year process for that kid. Just to get to that point, right? If you try to hijack the system, if you try to go, I want to get from point A to point Z like that. Well, you're going to run into multiple things. One possibly injury and two. What's the real reason why you're Russian? The real reason why you Russians, Because I don't want to be there in first place. Now you've just ruined the whole concept. Now you've just ruined the journey. To me, that is much more important. Like when I used to be a fake body motor, if you will, that when I try to get ready for shows. I don't remember the show at all. The only thing I remembered was those nights where I was damn hungry those mornings where I had to get up, do my quote unquote fasted cardio meal prep backs without remember only big. How I was on stage for forty five seconds like that was twelve weeks for forty five seconds. Right? So that's where you gotta understand like it's the beauty or what is it that Jake whole line of the beauty is in the is in the cash. Basically what? The thing that you want to fall in love with the most is the adversity that they were going to fall in love with the most is the stressful points. That's what's going to create the beauty, if you will remember that Jake Colon. MacInnis foot on the floor like a pogo stick and doing extremely extremely unloaded movements early on that site, too early on but in the rehab process itself to introduce low level plyometrics, He's doing band assisted jumps. He's doing isometrics. He's doing heavy squads. He's doing some bar bell curls. All things important for the curies. >> Sure are. Absolutely yeah beyond you. My understandings of the lower leg complex is off the charts because of my injury. So for the viewer's eye, tor macula or a ruptured my Achilles tendon with a full rupture but right at the insertion, which is the very atypical tear because I've been dealing teno sis for over a year before I tore it. So they had it cut me up top to bring me down low, if you will. So usually Achilles ruptures that all they do is bring it together and then tie it. There are. So it through the mind was at the very bottom. So essentially, they had to cut me up top toh length and me and then, uh, suitors through. So is very atypical, which sucks only that that part sucks. Spike. Um, it's not that I am Well, maybe a little bit arrogant, but I honestly want to take full control of my physical therapy because I think that intuitively I understand the process not just of rehab, but of how to increase performance. So all I did was watered down as much of that is possible and truly started as soon as I got to the pain free. And so, yeah, with all the unloaded stuff, it just made sense to me like that's something you just don't see in physical therapy to It's kind of blows. My mind is what's the first thing to go like when you get older? What happens? Will you lose your ability to do very forceful things or to lose power or the ability to generate power. So that's the first thing that came in my mind when I rupture. Or when a Torme Achilles was okay. I need to go back and not be old because essentially, I'm staying still. So if I'm staying still, it's like use it or lose it protocol. So from that perspective, I told myself, I need to move fast at some point. So I started with all my available limbs at the time, just moving fast. Then I progress toe when my suitors seal or excuse me with my I want my wound healed. I got into the pool, so that's the most is about is unloaded. You should get, and all it did was just frail. My leg and there a cz muchas I could through different planes and of course, he has fold up. But of course, it's going to like your adding a stress. And so I just did it Mohr or Mohr. And so I just Kim. Training fast, even though, is the most unloaded way you can do it. And then, like Max was talking about, I got to a seated position and I just started doing be most unloaded pogo jumps you've ever seen or ankle pops or whatever you want to call it. So then I transition to standing on it isometrics, then putting more force into the forefoot isometrics. And then I started using the bands I mean super heavy bands and then just started like Pogo's and then start lighting the bands I went to arm went the body weight. To me, it's like super common sense, but I don't know, maybe the physical world. It doesn't really look at it that way. They look at it and isolation opposed to global. So to me, I knew if I could quickly get back to global patterns that I will be able to promote healing faster. And so, like Chase talked about, his last one ought to be a far protocols. Luckily, I had him as a resource to help me with my healing process, but right now, on that four and a half months, almost five months, and I'm doing some pretty cool things if just to give you a point of reference. Dez Bryant, wide receiver. He tore his a week after mine, and essentially, you guys Essentially, he's What's a similar athletes level athlete? You know, very someone. Uh, actually, he's going to be up until eight to nine months. John Wall tour has a few months after mine. He's going to be an entire year for his process. Boog, Golden State warriors took him a whole year to get back on my goal. If I can get it back and lesson seven months, that means I did something, right? >> No, I love it. Well, that's tough stuff.
