So far, we've covered the rapid migration to WiFi 60 technology and the role that switching is going to play. And now we're gonna get into private five g to do that. Let's welcome Masumi here. Who is vice president and general manager of mobile cable and the Iot business at Cisco and Greg Dorey, who is the vice president of product management for the networking experiences group of Cisco. He's responsible for Catalyst access that whole portfolio enterprise five G Cisco DNA spaces, Cisco, Iasi A lot of stuff there. Uh, Greg gentlemen, welcome, >>Dave. Thank you for having us. >>Yeah, our pleasure. So let's start with you on the topic of private five g five g. What do we need to know about that? And more specifically, you know what's unique about Cisco's private five G? >>So, most importantly, delivering private five G in enterprise terms that's super important to look at five p. Many of our peer groups might have got it wrong. We're looking at private five g with the lens of enterprise. What enterprise really needs is five g going to come and displace a lot of existing technology? Or is it going to help augment the technology that enterprise has an excellent Their digitisation is you need. I wanted to start Dave with the basic premise of hybrid work, and what hybrid work really means. Is it only for knowledge worker or is it for all workers? So we strongly believe hybrid work needs to empower all workers. It's not only connecting remote workers but also bringing people things and space together. And I strongly believe the combination of WiFi six n five g for private network is going to accelerate that journey, bringing people things and space together in a very, very cohesive way. Why are our offer is so unique? We are going to create a continent. Enterprises don't have to make a hard choice. They will be using WiFi technology and five G technology hand in hand without creating a disruption on their policy and identity systems. They don't have to rethink. Do I have to go and build a new background is a common background that will support both WiFi as well as five t Most importantly, delivering this enter offer as a service with the ease of consumption is of operation and trusted environment that they can put their mission critical workloads on. >>I like it. So couple takeaways there are inclusive of all workers, not just knowledge workers non disruptive. Everybody loves to hear that. And of course, the as a service model is key. So let me stay with you. I mean, we can't wait for five g, right? It's lightning fast. They've got super low latency, very high bandwidth. So that's what everybody is excited about. The question, though, is is five g gets introduced. You know it's going to power things like Coyote Networks. Is that going to replace WiFi and legacy Wired broadband? >>Absolutely not. So we see private five years, an augmentation to the enterprise on top of WiFi WiFi. As you heard in the previous conversation, WiFi is bringing more capability with WiFi six and WiFi 16 and five G is going to be yet another augmentation. WiFi and fight. The will coexist within enterprise for many years to come. I would like my friend Greg to talk a little bit about this continuum. Greg. >>Yeah, I think it's sort of like I like to say it's an and not an AR because there's enough use cases out there. Richard Pryor Spectrum And you know, spectrum >>is a constraint, so >>you have private five G, your WiFi six and both offer opportunities. So, for example, in an indoor carpet setting where you're basically connecting your phone for basic browsing or connecting your laptop, WiFi is sufficient. But if it's a process automation, uh, factory where you need seven nines of reliability, private five g is a better technology. Similarly outdoor large areas. It's probably private. Five g right like this, you can have easy handoff between public and private, so it's use case driven, and once it's used case driven, it's going to be an are because there's so many next time use cases, whether it's a are we are drones, self driving cars, you name it right, like And so I think these two technologies five g and Y 5 60 is gonna work hand in hand to deliver awesome outcomes for our customers. >>Yeah, and just the data volumes are gonna be incredible. We always talk about the data volumes. You ain't seen nothing yet is what I always say. But the thing is, every new tech that's introduced into the enterprise, you can almost be certain that is going to bring adoption challenges. And not only that also is going to bring changes in the way you do things. And that brings new complexities from an operational standpoint. So my question is, how are you addressing this with the introduction of five g. >>Dave, this is a fantastic question, and this is why we have spent me and Greg have spent tremendous amount of time to create continual. I'll start with the foundation first, back down. So we have been building this enterprise backbone, supporting what Wild Connexion as well as WiFi Connexion. We wanted to make sure that as private five G camps within enterprise, you don't have to rethink and reimagine your background is the common backbone that will support both WiFi WiFi six WiFi 60 as well as private five g. You rest assured that it is the same backbone that we have heard in the previous section on the Cap 90 that will also support a private key access. The second aspect of private five G is as you build any new technology into enterprise. Oftentimes we get into this trap to get to an outcome. We move fast and we create asylum. And then that silo operation creates a barriers to mainstream it. So upfront we have to think about not creating another silent and how we're doing it. Number one is a device that can connecting to WiFi network or a private five G network. You don't have to reimagine or rethink how I'm going to manage. The identity will create continue of the common identity across the WiFi access or five t access in the same environment. The second aspect of that is, how are we going to reach in all our staff are enterprise staff is well trained with WiFi technology and white technology. Now five G comes with tremendous amount of value and benefit, but it also comes with inherent technology complexity, learning problems. This is where our simple to consume simple to operate model of sass comes to play. That we're going to take all those complexity away. It is a cloud deliberate service enterprise don't have to go through this massive learning car. Adopting this technology last but not list on how you're going to manage your capital. Any new technology and enterprise, Oftentimes you need a huge amount of upfront investment to adopt the technology to get to the other side of getting the outcome. So again, our business model of SARS will allow Enterprise to adopt this new technology and pay as you go model to meet with enterprise needs. Finally, I also wanted to pass to break to touch a little bit more on how we are thinking about this common identity across any access in the enterprise. Greg to your >>So we we talk about it in two different ways. One is a lot of enterprises today use our identity and secure management platform. We call it Isis Co ice platform. And so years and years of policy and identities Excess service, radio service they use, uh, etcetera are plugged in already into our eyes. Right. So if you can share that with this private five years as a service, uh, infrastructure that Muslims been building, we think we'll be able to create that bridge because we're not forcing enterprises to create new identities, a new policy. So thats sort of step one to make it easier. Uh, you also talk through something where, in the case of a public five g network, for example, the It's very convenient because you take your phone out of your pocket and it's connected to the network, right? Was this for WiFi? You have to log into an S I D in your hotel or in your home and home. It's automatic, but that's that logging process that creates friction. And that's a problem, because then you can't be seamless. So we initiated what we call us open roaming, right? Like that's, uh, identity federation that we first created between identity owners. Could be carriers could be, um, anything that anyone who owns an identity and they will share with venues. And so if the sharing happens, then that Onboarding can be automatic and once on boarding is automatic, then it's easy to pass off between five and five G. And so that's again another way in which you can lower the adoption barriers because you share across public private G and WiFi networks. So these are two concrete examples of how we thought about lowering the barriers of adoption. As we enter into this heterogeneous >>world, >>I can't wait. Let's let's talk about how this thing scales in the go to market, what are the most likely or maybe preferred or obvious routes to market for private five g Francisco >>so they stay tuned when when they announce more about it. But I can also assure you that exposed to the spectrum is a challenge for many enterprises when it comes to cellular technology. In some countries, there are more spectrum accessible by enterprise. In many countries, that's not the case. So we have talked to very carefully that how do we bring this offer to the market? Partnering with many service providers and mobile operators, where in countries where we don't have direct access to the spectrum, our partnership with mobile operators that you will hear more about as we come to mobile world Congress is going to allow our enterprise to consume this technology even if they don't have the spectrum in places where the enterprise might have direct spectrum access. We'll also bring in our relativist providers to hide the complexity of the new technology on top of our cell services or a cloud deliberate services. This is the augmentation with the partnership with menaces providers and mobile operators that will ease this journey for enterprises are most important. Primitive in this journey is to keep it simple for enterprise. Make it intuitive and trust it from day one. >>Outstanding. Okay. Assume, Greg, Thanks so much. It's great to have you guys. We have two guests for this segment we have. Mika will lose. She's the art director for Nutanix Thank you so much for coming on the show. >>Thank you for inviting me >>And we have Satish Ramachandran, Global head of design at Nutanix Thank you so much for coming on. So it's always so much fun to talk to really creative people, particularly in this technology world. I want to start the conversation by asking Michael first where you go for inspiration and who do you talk to? What he read? What kinds of things do you look at to inspire you to and then bring them back to your job here in Nutanix. So I strongly >>believe that inspiration come from everywhere. No matter where you go is an architecture or you go to the supermarket and you look on packaging or you read a book and you think about images or even just social media. And there is so much variety of different opinion and different cultures to get inspired from. Even from this conference, we took inspiration from Copenhagen, the city, and from Swiss design or from California and divide in the mid century. I put, like not in construction, but like architecture. Er, um, we created this really Sundwall the supreme the best day ever. And I was actually reading a book with my kids, the diary of a wimpy kid. And I was like, Okay, you know what? We can make something really fun out of it. We can take like a page from a diary and create Sabrina Best day, something like that. >>It was truly everywhere. >>It's really every. >>How about Yusa? Tish >>men? It's two parts, actually. I think one is the inspiration when it comes to the aesthetics of design. So to a large degree, I'm a huge fan off minimalism, everything from Japanese paintings, for example, where with two or three strokes, you have a stark on the water. The Bauhaus movement clean, elegant lines very minimal to the point, and even the Scandinavian architecture, for example, is quite minimalistic and very clean. So that is one angle on what we strive to do in terms off getting to minimal, clean, simple. But in the other portion of inspiration is actually comes from empathy because, you know, it's the you know, I care deeply about the human condition, even pre Nutanix sort of teenage angst that never left me right. And ah, so in a sense, is a lot of empathy. Toe what people are going through in terms of technology, how they're using it. How can we make their lives easier? How can we bring about some joys in their life and to a large degree, the secretary working? You know, I t, um, has bean sort of underserved design wise for many years on de. So there's a lot of inspiration that comes in the form of motivation in order to do something for people there. >>Well, yes, it's a teacher, I'm wondering, can help connect the dots with us. I think of minimalism and obviously ties to this simplicity Nutanix and remember in the early days, talking Nutanix to make something truly simple from a technology standpoint usually has a lot of work, and we've been talking to the executive team about, you know, in this multi cloud, highly disperse. Tear it even harder today. So how does some of those core design principles make their way into into Nutanix is world. >>You want me to talk about the process? You know, I >>think >>the process is quite straightforward. I mean, you start with understanding the space, understanding the experience that exists in the space. You don't start with the feature or the product. That's the first thing you start with the people. So you started with a very human centric manner on. Okay, What are they trying to do? What are they trying to achieve and how do you get them in the simplest possible manner to do that? So we have this thing that we use called intentional our design, which is one off our design principles. Very. How do you get someone who has an intention to fulfill their intention with the least amount of effort? And the effort in the middle is what we label less friction constantly. So we talk about trying to become friction less and so on. So the process for that is you start with the person what they're trying to get done, and >>from there you actually >>work all the Muslims in the organization. So design, basically at that point takes on the role of a facilitator by bringing in, you know, engineering product management design itself together and all in service off the user to create an experience, right? So it starts with, you know, formulating the requirements together with engineering and product management. It's address it, then converging on these things by creating prototypes than testing these things with users and so on and then figuring out really what is essential, what can be thrown out and how to keep it really simple. And that's how we build product, basically. >>So that's so. As you said, it starts with this point of empathy, and that is this collaborative process between the engineers and the artists and design team. How would you say that design is more part of the Nutanix philosophy, just rather than the simple, simple, easy, elegant products itself but the entire company? How would you say it's it's built into the philosophy? I actually think this is >>why Nutanix is so unique in our space because we don't just look at the technology we looking at a whole package of design and technology, the left brain and the right brain together. And it comes from our leadership because, dear, it is the great advocator for design. He's really believing in the importance of it, not just a pretty rap on something, but it's something that is meaningful and and really able to provide a full experience for our customers. >>Yeah, meet me how maybe I love to get you both of your commentary. There's a new AH advertising campaign that was launched. The video was in the keynote yesterday. >>It >>all together now it is very colorful, and it is very diverse and at the same time, even, you know, I'm a technology guy. I will often roll my eyes when I see a certain advertising, but to articulate to the world, it's like, Okay, how does my database and multi cloud and all these things play together? Well, way we anthropomorphized though those technology pieces into people on dhe. You've got photos that you can do there, so bring us inside a little bit as to how that you helped the messaging eso some, you know, pretty complex pieces underneath. >>Yes, we're very excited about this campaign. I have to tell you. We worked very hard to conceptualize it and bring it out to the world. And we were very excited to be able to share it here. That next the thinking behind it. Waas, you know I to world is complex and here in Nutanix, we really try to offer a simple way to remove this complexity. So what is a better way than just take those I t concept and business an application manners and personalize them and make them fun. And when you think about Public Cloud, what do you mean? What does it mean to you? How do you envision it when you think about a database? Do you think about the strongman that carrying the cylinder and you >>make it a >>campaign Maur You humanize it, you make it accessible to people and you make it fun And this is what we're trying to do We're trying to delight. Our customers were trying to empower them to be able to do their business in a better way, and that was our goals provide simplicity, choice and delights. >>And as you said, it's it's this ample anthropomorphizing of this. If you've a database where a person what would go with the database person look like it's the cloud Where Human? Yes, exactly. And it just I think they just >>make make it fun and you make it unique and you create something that is different in our scene. And nothing, That's what we're trying to do. >>How do you work together with the engineers? I mean, I know you said. You gather in a room and you are thinking about the end user. How does the customer experience this? But how do artists and engineers communicate? I mean, is that Is that ever a challenge or >>not? Really? No, not really. Actually, it's, Ah, it's a three legged stool. Basically, there's ah, and you know, if you put marketing in there as well for the awareness piece, which precludes anything that we you know the customer uses, it actually becomes a four legged stool. But in terms of building product, it's a three legged stool, which is product management, and they're trying to figure out what is the product market fit, and that's what they bring to the table. The engineer's coming and as we're dreaming up stuff, they're thinking, Is this stuff buildable or not? You know these guys dreaming way too much, right? And so it is a colonization. So and I think that's the crucible in which the best creativity actually comes out. It's not designing isolation where, you know, design dreams up something and the rest of the folks build it. It really isn't that so. We are, actually, in a sense, the way I see it, we have the glue and we formed the Crucible for the colonization. And and in that, you know, good things come out. >>So we hear you are in Denmark, which is design savvy, fashion forward, food obsessed and eyes cultivating that sense of well being in comfort and coziness. What kinds of things are you going to take with you from this conference itself? What are you seeing? What's interesting to you? And how are you gonna bring that back to Nutanix? >>Honestly, for me, I think it's just the warmth of the people in the community in here. They were so invasive and and and kind. And we got a chance to work with a lot of people when we were building this conference. And and to me it's all about the human connection and I think this is something that I will definitely carry with me when we go back to Nutanix. And we were trying to think about our next dock next conference. And you know how we can bring some of that too there as >>well? Yeah, it's to teach anything on dot next Copenhagen, and you know, you're from Berlin, so you're in Europe and get gets a different, you know, cultural input. I >>think they're still. I think >>there is still some stuff. I think around the accessibility mainly for me, like the hotel we're staying. And, you know, first thing I noticed was, you know, that's bringing on, you know, when you have to open the refrigerator, for example, or the closet door And it, I mean, that first thought was like, you know, they have already designed in the accessibility. And then I liberate that back to product, and I think you know how we doing on accessibility. And of course, you know, everything around you here is pretty inspiring in terms of architecture and so on and so forth. So that's a gimme, really. And you see that a lot of it in Germany so that it isn't as much new, but in terms of the conference, it's very heartening that will come this fire. You know, I don't know. Miami many years ago, which is my first conference, you know, we were like all of 600 people, and now we are 4500 here. So in a sense, it's very heartening. And people seem to embrace the, you know, the vision that we're putting foot. Yeah, you know, around convergence off many, many things. >>How deeply technical are both of you? Um, I understand. >>I understand the technology. I understand the struggle. I understand what we're trying to achieve is a company. It doesn't mean I can go and do a demo on stage, but I think it's important to understand the technology of the company that you work for in order to represent it truly and in order to convey the message that we're trying to tell because we are a storyteller. That's what we do. We take the message and the technology, and we bring it out to our customers. So it's important. >>I'm a dyed in the wool engineer s o. I was I mean, my cases where I was an engineer for a fleet to the kids. You know, you take running engineering teams, that kind of stuff. And then I stumbled upon design. So I have a very deep understanding off engineering and what it takes to build stuff. But I have another side of me which is generally around. Empathy, experiences, you know, human interaction, human behavior. What makes people take what frustrates them, those kinds of things. So for me that we design has beena synthesis off many off my interests, and that's why I fell in love with it and have stuck around. >>One of the biggest issues in Silicon Valley and in the technology industry at large is is the skills and the right people the talent gap? How much of an issue is that for the design teams within these technology companies? Because you are looking for so many different skills people who can grasp the technology but then also have this more creative spark Innis to them to how hard is it to find the right people? I think it's a little bit >>of a challenge, but I think we're very fortunate to have amazing teams that understand technology and design in the connection between them. So I know I feel very fortunate with the people I get to work with. Their very there are amazing. Yeah. >>I mean, it was hard in the beginning when we when Nutanix was 150 people or something on the brown. Nobody knew. So then it was very hard to find the right people and to also simplified the vision and to sell it. I still remember spending with every new hire. I would be the first guy they would talk to. And I spent two years in two hours on a whiteboard, talking of taking borders, a technology problem on translating it into an experiential problem. And speaking to really this is very hard to design for and that's where the challenge lies, right? But what a period of time we have successfully built a brand which is a Nutanix design brand. And we have done a ton of things that I'm actually very proud off establishing relationships with universities, even on the social media, having a website, having a proper blawg, various things. When Now we are recognized in the enterprise space as a place for designers to go and work. And there is a certain combination. I figured out where which makes for a good designer in the space. Because if you take people with too little off a technology background, then the ramp up is very high. S o. If you typically you find somebody who's got done some amount of technology than the prior company or in school. And there are people like that. There are plenty of them. And then they moved on to design. And that seems to be the right mix because they can understand the empathize both on the technology side and also on the design side of things. And that makes for the right combination. >>And it's not >>too bad to find people. >>And I think >>technology can be talked. But I think passion and carrying is that part of it is hard to find >>be innate skills. Yeah, exactly. Great. A first time guest on the program, says Heart O. B. Who is a senior leader of global business development with Healthcare Life. Scientists know this group and AWS thanks so much for joining us. All right, so you know, we love digging into some of the verticals here in New York City. Of course, it's been a lot of time on the financial service is peas we actually had, Ah, another one of our teams out of the eight of us. Imagine show going on yesterday in Seattle with a lot of the education pieces. So healthcare, life sciences in genomics, little bit of tech involved in those groups, a lot of change going on in that world. So give us a thumbnail if you would as toe what what's happening in your >> world so well just from a scope one of you Health care includes life set paid on provider Life sciences is far more by attacking its most medical device and then genomics and what we're seeing in those spaces. Let's start with health care. It's such a broad thing, will just sort of back to back and forth in health care itself. What we're sort of seeing their customs ask us to focus on and to help them do falls into three categories. First, is a lot of customers ask us to help them personalized the consumer health journey. You and I, all of us, are so accustomed to that frictionless experiences we have elsewhere and in health care. There's a lot more friction. And so we're getting a lot of enquiries and request for us to help them transform that experience. Make it frictionless. So an example That would be if you're familiar with Doc. Doc started here in New York. Actually, when you want a book, an appointment, Doc, Doc, you can normally, if you go online, I have to put information for insurance. You type it all. Then it's full of friction. Have to put all the fields in. They use one of our A I service's image recognition, and you simply hold up your card to the camera and it able to pull your in transporation, determine eligibility and look the right appointment for you. So that's an example of removing friction for the consumer of the health consume over the patient as they're trying to go to that health care and excessive category one frictionless experiences using AWS to support it with a i service is category, too. We're getting a lot of interest for us to help health systems predict patient health events. So anything of value base care the way you actually are able to change the cost. Quality Curve is predicting events, not just dealing with math and so using a i Am L service is on top of data to predict and forecast events is a big part of one example would be with sooner where they moved, they're healthy and 10 platform, which is a launch to a patient record platform onto AWS. About 223,000,000 individuals that are on that platform Men we did a study with him where way consume about 210,000 individual patient data and created a machine learning model this is published where you can predict congestive heart failure 15 months in advance of it actually occurring. So when you look at that, that prediction are forecasting that sort of one of the powers of this princess. What category number two is predicting health events, and then the last one I'd be remiss in leaving out is that you probably have heard a lot of discussion on physician and a clinician. Burnout to the frustrations of the nurses or doctors and Muslims have the heart of that is not having the right information the right time to take care of the right patient. Data liquidity and in Trop ability is a huge challenge, and a lot of our customers are asking us to help solve those problems with them. You know it hims. This year we announced, together with change Healthcare Change Healthcare said they want to provide free and troubling to the country on AWS, with the platform supporting that. So those are sort of three categories. Personalize the consumer health journey. Predicting patient health events and promoting intra ability is sort of the signals that we're seeing in areas that were actively supporting our customers and sort of elevating the human condition. >> It's very easy to look at the regulation around things like health care and say, Oh, that gets in the way and its onerous and we're not gonna deal with it or it should be faster. I don't think anyone actively wants that. We like the fact that our hospitals were safe, that health care is regulated and in some of the ways that it is at least. But I saw an artifact of that means that more than many other areas of what AWS does is your subject to regulatory speed of Sloane. A speed of feature announcement, as opposed to being able to do it as fast technology allows relatively easy example of this was a few years back. In order to run, get eight of us to sign a B A. For hip, a certification, you have to run dedicated tendency instances and will not changed about a year and 1/2 2 years ago or even longer. Depending it's it all starts to run together after a time, but once people learn something, they don't tend to go back and validate whether it's still true. How do you just find that communicating to your customers about things that were not possible yesterday now are, >> yeah, when you look at hip eligibility. So as you know, a devious is about over 100 him eligible service's, which means that these are so this is that so compliance that you start their compliance, Remember, is an outcome, not a future. So compliance is a combination of people process platform, and we bring the platform that's hip eligible, and our customers bring the people in process, if you will, to use that platform, which then becomes complying with regulatory requirements. And so you're absolutely right. There's a diffusion of sort of understanding of eligibility, a platform, and then they worked with customers have to do in order as a shared responsibility to do it. That diffusion is sometimes slower. In fact, there's sometimes misinformation. So we always see it work with our customers and that shared, responsive model so that they can meet their requirements as they come to the cloud. And we can bring platforms that are eligible for hip. They can actually carry out the work clothes they need to. So it's it's that money, you know, the way I think of it is. This when you think of compliance, is that if if I were to build for you a deadbolt for your door and I can tell you that this complies boasted of things, but you put the key under the mat way might not be complying with security and regular requirements for our house. So it's a share responsible. I'll make the platform be eligible and compliant, and so that collective does daytime and dusting. People are saying that there is a flat from this eligible, and then they have to also, in their response to work to the people in process potion to make the totality of it comply with the requirements for regulatory for healthcare regulatory requirements. >> Some of the interesting conversations I've had in the last few years in health care in the industry is collaborations that are going on, you know, how do we share data while still maintaining all of the regulations that are involved? Where does that leave us get involved? There >> should. That's a fact. There is a data sharing part of that did a liquidity story that we talked about earlier in terms of instability. I'll give an example of where AWS actually actively working in that space. You may be familiar with a service we launched last November at Reinvent called Amazon Campion Medical and Campion Medical. What it does is it looks at a medical note and can extract key information. So if you think back to in high school, when you used to read a book in highlighting yellow key concepts that you wanted to remember for an exam Amazon Carmen Medical Same thing exactly, can lift key elements and goes from a text blob, too discrete data that has relationship ontology and that allows data sharing where you where you need to. But then there's one of the piece, so that's when you're allowed to disclose there's one of me. Sometimes you and I want to work on something, but we want to actually read act the patient information that allows data sharing as well. So Amazon coming medical also allows you to read, act. Think of when a new challenge shows that federally protected doctor that's blacked out Amazon com for American also remove patient identifying information. So if you and I want to collaborate on research project, you have a set of data that you wanna anonima de identify. I have data information of I D identified. To put it together, I can use Amazon com Medical Read Act All the patient information Make it d identified. You can do the same. And now we can combine the three of us that information to build models, to look a research and to do data sharing. So whether you have full authority to to share patient information and use the ontological portion of it, or whether you want to do the identifying matter, Amazon competent medical helps you do that. >> What's impressive and incredible is that whether we like it or not, there's something a little special about health care where I can decide I'm not going to be on the Internet. Social media things all stop tweeting. Most people would thank me for that, or I can opt out of ride sharing and only take taxis, for example. But we're all sooner or later going to be customers of the health care industry, and as a result, this is some of that effects, all of us, whether we want to acknowledge that or not. I mean, where some of us are still young enough to believe that we have this immortality streak going on. So far, so good. But it becomes clear that this is the sort of thing where the ultimate customer is all of us. As you take a look at that, does that inform how AWS is approaching this entire sector? >> Absolutely. In fact, I'd like to think that a W brought a physician toe lead sector because they understood that in addition to our customer obsession that we see through the customer to the individual and that we want to elevate the human condition we wanted obsess over our customers success so that we can affect positive action on the lives of individuals everywhere. To me, that is a turn. The reason I joined it of U. S s. So that's it. Certainly practice of healthcare Life's I said on genomic Seti ws has been around for about six years. A doubIe s double that. And so actually it's a mature practice and our understanding of our customers definitely includes that core flame that it's about people and each of us come with a special story. In fact, you know the people that work in the U. S. Healthcare life, science team people that have been to the bedside there, people that have been adventure that I worked in the farm industry, healthcare, population, health. They all are there because of that thing you just said. Certainly I'm there because that on the entire practice of self life sciences is keenly aware of looking through the customers to the >> individual pieces. All right, how much? You know, mix, you know, definitely an area where compute storage are critically important than we've seen. Dramatic change. You know, in the last 5 to 10 years, anything specific you could share on that >> Genomics genomex is an area where you need incredible computer storage on. In our case, for example, alumina, which is one of our customers, runs about 85% of all gene sequencing on the planet is in aws customer stores. All that data on AWS. So when you look at genomex, real power of genomics is the fact that enables precision diagnostics. And so when you look at one of our customers, Grail Grail, that uses genomic fragments in the blood that may be coming from cancer and actually sequences that fragment and then on AWS will use the power of the computer to do machine learning on that Gino Mexicans from to determine if you might have one of those 1 10 to 12 cancers that they're currently screening for. And so when you talk to a position health, it really can't be done without position diagnostics, which depends on genomex, which really is an example of that. It runs on AWS because we bring compute and storage essentially infinite power. To do that you want, For example, you know the first whole genome sequence took 14 years. And how many billions of dollars Children's Hospital Philadelphia now does 1000 whole genome sequences in two hours and 20 minutes on AWS, they spike up 20,000 see few cores, do that desi and then moved back down. Genomics. The field that literally can't be. My humble opinion can't be done outside the cloud. It just the mechanics of needed. The storage and compute power is one that is born in the cloud on AWS has those examples that I shared with you. >> It's absolutely fantastic and emerging space, and it's it's interesting to watch that despite the fact there is a regulatory burden that everything was gonna dispute that and the gravity of what it does. I'm not left with sense that feature enhancement and development and velocity of releases is slower somehow in health care than it is across the entire rest of the stack. Is that an accurate assessment, or is there a bit of a drag effect on that? >> Do you mean in the health care customers are on AWS speaking >> on AWS aside, citizen customers are going to be customers. Love them. We >> do aws. You know, we obviously innovation is a rowdy and we release gosh everything. About 2011 we released 80 front service than features and jumped 1015 where it was like 702 jumped 2018. Where was 1957 features? That's like a 25 fold. Our pace of innovation is not going to slow down. It's going to continue. It's in our blood in our d. N. A. We in fact, hire people that are just not satisfied. The status quo on want to innovate and change things. Just, you know, innovation is the beginning of the end of the story, so, no, I don't have to spend any slowdown. In fact, when you add machine learning models on machine learning service that we're putting in? I only see it. An even faster hockey stick of the service is that we're gonna bring out. And I want you to come to reinvent where we're going to announce the mall and you you will be there and see that. live from Stanford University in Palo Alto California it's the cube covering women in data science conference 2018 brought to you by Stanford welcome to the cube we are alive at Stanford University I'm Lisa Martin and we are at the 3rd annual women in data science conference or woods whiz if you're not familiar is a one-day technical conference that has keynote speakers technical vision talks as well as a career panel and we are fortunate to have guests from all three today it's also an environment it's really a movement that's aimed at inspiring and educating data scientists globally and supporting women in the field this event is remarkable in its third year they are expecting to reach sit down for this 100,000 people today we were here at Stanford this is the main event in person but there's over 150 plus regional events around the globe in 50 plus countries and I think those numbers will shift up during the day and I'll be sure to brief you on that we're excited to be joined by one of the speakers featured on mainstage this morning not only a cube alum not returning to us but also the first ever female president of Harvey Mudd College dr. Maria Klawe a maria welcome back to the cube thank you it's great to be here it's so exciting to have you here I love you representing with your t-shirt there I mentioned you are the first-ever female president of Harvey Mudd you've been in this role for about 12 years and you've made some pretty remarkable changes there supporting women in technology you gave some stats this morning in your talk a few minutes ago share with us what you've done to improve the percentages of females in faculty positions as well as in this student body well the first thing I should say is as president I do nothing nothing it's like a good job the whole thing that makes it work at Harvey Mudd is we are community that's committed to diversity and inclusion and so everything we do we try to figure out ways that we will attract people who are underrepresented so that's women in areas like computer science and engineering physics it's people of color in all areas of science and engineering and it's also LGTB q+ i mean it's you know it's it's muslims it's it's just like all kinds of things and our whole goal is to show that it doesn't matter what race you are doesn't matter what gender or anything else if you bring hard work and persistence and curiosity you can succeed i love that especially the curiosity part one of the things that you mentioned this morning was that for people don't worry about the things that you you might think you're not good at i thought that was a very important message as well as something that I heard you say previously on the cube as well and that is the best time that you found to reach women young women and to get them interested in stem as even a field of study is the first semester in college and I should with you off camera that was when I found stem in biology tell me a little bit more about that and how what are some of the key elements that you find about that time in a university career that are so I guess right for inspire inspiration so I think the thing is that when you're starting in college if somebody can introduce you to something you find fun engaging and if you can really discover that you can solve major issues in the world by using these ideas these concepts the skills you're probably going to stay in that and graduate in that field whereas if somebody does that to when you're in middle school there's still lots of time to get put off and so our whole idea is that we emphasize creativity teamwork and problem-solving and we do that whether it's in math or an engineering or computer science or biology we just in all of our fields and when we get young women and young men excited about these possibilities they stick with it and I love that you mentioned the word fun and curiosity I can remember exactly where I was and bio 101 and I was suddenly I'd like to biology but never occurred to me that I would ever have the ability to study it and it was a teacher that showed me this is fun and also and I think you probably do this too showed that you believe in someone you've got talent here and I think that that inspiration coming from a mentor whether you know it's a mentor or not is a key element there that is one that I hope all of the the viewers today and the women that are participating in which have the chance to find so one of the things every single one of us can do in our lives is encourage others and you know it's amazing how much impact you can have I met somebody who's now a faculty person at Stanford she did her PhD in mechanical engineering her name is Allison Marsden I hadn't seen her for I don't know probably almost 12 years and she said she came up to me and she said I met you just as I was finishing my PhD and you gave me a much-needed pep talk and you know that is so easy to do believing in people encouraging them and it makes so much difference it does I love that so wins is as I mentioned in the third annual and the growth that they have seen is unbelievable I've not seen anything quite like it in in tech in terms of events it's aimed at inspiring not just women and data science but but data science in general what is it about wizz that attracted you and what are some of the key things that you shared this morning in your opening remarks well so the thing that attracts me about weeds is the following data science is growing exponentially in terms of the job opportunities in terms of the impact on the world and what I love about withes is that they had the insight this flash of genius I think that they would do a conference where all the speakers would be women and just that they would show that there are women all over the world who are contributing to data science who are loving it who are being successful and it's it's the crazy thing because in some ways it's really easy to do but nobody had done it right and it's so clear that there's a need for this when you think about all of the different locations around the world that are are doing a width version in Nigeria in Mumbai in London in you know just all across the world there are people doing this yeah so the things I shared are number one oh my goodness this is a great time to get into data science it's just there's so many opportunities in terms of career opportunities but there's so many opportunities to make a difference in the world and that's really important number two I shared that it's you never too old to learn math and CS and you know my example is my younger sister who's 63 and who's learning math and computer science at the northern Alberta Institute of Technology Nate all the other students are 18 to 24 she suffers from fibromyalgia she's walked with a walker she's quite disabled she's getting A's and a-pluses it's so cool and you know I think for every single person in the world there's an opportunity to learn something new and the most important thing is hard work and perseverance that it's so much more important than absolutely anything else I agree with that so much it's it's such an inspiring time but I think that you said there was clearly a demand for this what Wits has done in such a short time period demonstrates massive demand the stats that I was reading the last couple of days that show that women with stem degrees only 26% of them are actually working in STEM fields that's very low and and even can start from things like how how companies are recruiting talent and the messages that they're sending may be the right ones maybe not so much so I have a great example for you about companies recruiting talent so about three years ago I was no actually almost four years ago now I was talking in a conference called HR 50 and it's a conference that's aimed at the chief human resource officers of 50 multinationals and my talk I was talking for 25 minutes on how to recruit and retain women in tech careers and afterwards the chief HR officer from Accenture came up to me and she said you know we hire 17,000 software engineers a year Justin India 17,000 and she said we've been coming in at 30 percent female and I want to get that up to 45 she said you told me some really good things I could use she she said you told me how to change the way we advertise jobs change the way we interview for jobs four months later her name is Ellen Chowk Ellen comes up to me at another conference this has happens to be the most powerful women's summit that's run by Fortune magazine every year and she comes up and she says Maria I implemented different job descriptions we changed the way we interview and I also we started actually recruiting at Women's College engineering colleges in India as well as co-ed once she said we came in at 42% Wow from 30 to 42 just making those changes crying I went Ellen you owe me you're joining my more my board and she did right and you know they have Accenture has now set a goal of being at 50/50 in technical roles by 2025 Wow they even continued to come in all around the world they're coming in over 40% and then they've started really looking at how many women are being promoted to partners and they've moved that number up to 30% in the most recent year so you know it's a such a great example of a company that just decided we're gonna think about how we advertise we're going to think about how we interview we're gonna think about how we do promotions and we're going to make it equitable and from a marketing perspective those aren't massive massive changes so whether it expects quite simple exactly yeah these are so the thing I think about so when I look at what's happening at Harvey Mudd and how we've gotten more women into computer science engineering physics into every discipline it's really all about encouragement and support it's about believing in people it's about having faculty who when they start teaching a class the perhaps is technically very rigorous they might say this is a really challenging course every student in this course who works hard is going to succeed it's setting that expectation that everyone can succeed it's so important I think back to physics and college and how the baseline was probably 60% in terms of of grades scoring and you went in with intimidation I don't know if I can do this and it sounds like again a such a simple yet revolutionary approach that you're taking let's make things simple let's be supportive and encouraging yet hopefully these people will get enough confidence that they'll be able to sustain that even within themselves as they graduate and go into careers whether they stay in academia or go in industry and I know you've got great experiences in both I have I so I've been very lucky and I've been able to work both in academia and in industry I will say so I worked for IBM Research for eight years early in my career and you know I tribute a lot of my success as a leader since then to the kind of professional development that I got as a manager at IBM Research and you know what I think is that I there's not that much difference between creating a great learning environment and a great work environment and one of the interesting results that came out of a study at Google sometime in the last few months is they looked at what made senior engineering managers successful and the least important thing was their knowledge of engineering of course they all have good knowledge of engineering but it was empathy ability to mentor communication skills ability to encourage all of these kinds of things that we think of as quote unquote soft skills but to actually change the world and and on those sasuke's you know we hear a lot about the hard skills if we're thinking about data scientists from a role perspective statistical analysis etcetera but those soft skills empathy and also the ability to kind of bring in different perspectives for analyzing data can really have a major impact on every sector and socially in the world today and that's why we need women and people of color and people who are not well represented in these fields because data science is changing everything in the world absolutely is and if we want those changes to be for the better we really need diverse perspectives and experiences influencing things that get made because you know algorithms are not algorithms can be hostile and negative as well as positive and you know good for the world and you need people who actually will raise the questions about the ethics of algorithms and how it gets used there's a great book about how math can be used for the bad of humanity as well as the good of humanity and until we get enough people with different perspectives into these roles nobody's going to be asking those questions right right well I think with the momentum that we're feeling in this movement today and it sounds like what you're being able to influence greatly at Mudd for the last twelve years plus there is there are our foundations that are being put in place with not just on the education perspective but on the personal perspective and in inspiring the next generation giving them helping them I should say achieve the confidence that they need to sustain them throughout their career summary I thank you so much for finding the time to join us this morning on the cube it's great to have you back and we can't wait to talk to you next year and It's our flagship program, we go out to the events and as you can see from the noise, I'm John Furrier with SiliconANGLE co-host Dave Vellante of WikiBon.org And our special guest, John Cleese, distinguished Professor at Cornell, we just learned, no-one knows that. But apparently that's true. Writer, comedian, thought-leader, I got told that. >> And a Doctor. I'm a Doctor, Doctor of Laws. >> Doctor. >> And, what else am I? I was offered a Peerage but I turned it down because I had to be in England during the winter and go and vote in the House of Lords, so I said no to that. And I also turned down a CBE, but I would love to have an OBE. But not an Order of the British Empire, I'd like to have an Out of Body Experience. (laughs) >> But you're not a thought leader anymore, you're a futurist, that's the new trend. The futurist is the buzzword. >> No, I'm not. I'm very much living in the past. I don't like the future. And I don't think much of the present. (laughs) >> Well you're here speaking at the CIO Decisions. What do you think of all the CIOs and all the geeks here at ServiceNow? What's your? >> Well I like geeks because they all like Monty Python. (laughs) You know? I'm about, three-quarters of the speeches I do are to software people, and I usually tease them. You know, I ask em how many Star Trek episodes they can name, whether they've got a tee-shirt with Moore's Equation on it, and all this kind of, whether they wear a black backpack to formal occasions. So I got a whole lot of geek jokes. But they all like Python, cos they're extremely smart, and as you know, people who like Python are astonishingly smart. (laughs) >> So how to you tell smart people from people who aren't smart? How about people who are not smart? >> Well as you've said, you like Monty Python. >> I love Monty Python. (imitates extreme gibberish) >> You think, he doesn't like it. Doesn't get the jokes. >> So you've talked to a lot of software people. In Vegas? Do you like Vegas? Enjoy Vegas? >> Vegas? >> Las Vegas. (laughs) You see a show while you're out here? >> I can't get over this place. (laughs) Why people spend a lot of money to come here, so that they can lose what money they still have left. I really don't get it. Do they come here, because they think that the casino owners are so rich because they won a lot of money gambling at other people's casinos? (laughs) The only good thing about it is the food. >> Did you bring your wife with you? >> Which one? (laughs) No I didn't. She wasn't feeling well, said she's going to join me in New York, cos I'm going onto New York. And this weekend we are at the Tribeca Film Festival, Robert De Niro's, and we are having a Monty Python retrospective, for really smart people. >> What's been the weirdest thing that has happened to you, in the tech community here in ServiceNow. Any highlights? >> Not this visit, but the last visit when I arrived at the hotel, I can't think which one it was, Venetian I think, and the guy at the counter recognized me and said, are you listening? >> John F: Yes, I'm Tweeting away. >> No you're not. I tweet. >> I'm Tweeting away. >> He's kind of rude that way. >> What are you on your fucking keyboard for? I'm telling you a joke. (laughs) >> Tweeting away. >> Welcome to the future. >> Do you have a Twitter handle? >> Now, shall I start it again? (laughs) I was coming here to Las Vegas, right, I was staying at the Venetian hotel. Got any phone calls you need to answer or anything? >> Hold on, let me check. (laughs) >> I arrived there at reception and the guy said to me, "Mr Cleese, I really like your shows Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and all of that. Could I have your autograph?" So I said, sure, I write him an autograph. Then he says, could I have your credit card for extra expenses, and I gave it to him, and he said, "I'm sorry to ask you this, but do you have any identification?" (laughs) It's true. >> So are you Tweeting, and live-streaming? >> John C: Am I what? >> Tweeting, using your Twitter account? >> Am I, Am I? Can we get a handkerchief. >> Do you have a Facebook page? >> Facebook? I've heard of Facebook. That's for people who aren't important enough to get in the gossip columns and newspapers, right? (laughs) >> So we have some Facebook questions from the crowd. Do you mind if we ask you some of those? Somebody wants to know, what the air speed velocity is of an unladen swallow? >> Oh, I used to know this. I used to know this, in 1971 I could have answered that. Pass. (laughs) >> Dave: You're lucky. >> Are you back with us again? >> I'm back, I'm just going through the questions. So the question on my Facebook page is, what about this Cornell study about the double curse of incompetence? >> The double what? >> John F: Curse of incompetence. >> The double what you say? >> Dave: Curse. Double curse. >> Of incompetence. I don't know. >> Good question. >> Oh, now I know what you're talking about. There's a great guy there, a Professor called David Dunning, and he's one of the most amusing and entertaining guys I've ever met. And he's spent his career studying how good people are at knowing how good they are at things. What he calls Self Assessment. And what he's discovered, which I absolutely love, is that in order to know how good you are at something, it requires almost exactly the abilities that it does to be good at that thing in the first place. So if you're absolutely no good at something, you lack exactly the abilities that you need to know that you're no fucking good at it. And that explains the planet, better than anything else that I've ever come across. Is that there's a whole lot of people out there, who have no idea what they're doing, but they have absolutely no idea that they have no idea what they're doing. And those are the ones with the confidence and stupidity, who finish up in power. That's why the planet doesn't work. (laughs) >> So, honestly they don't know about Monty Python. >> They're not smart enough. >> What do you mean they don't know about Monty Python? This is a very smart man, David Dunning. (laughs) He's very smart, he's also shown, oh it doesn't matter. >> What did you talk about, the CIOs, when you out talking to the CIOs- >> John C: C-I-Os? >> John F: The Chief Information Officers. >> Geeks, well, what was interesting was that they were quite receptive to what I was saying, which is so counter-cultural. You see, I think we're living in the nadir of our civilization. I think as you wake up in the morning, that sound you can hear is our civilization cracking. And it's because of technology, because nobody talks to anyone anymore. They all go in restaurants and then they do this. I mean, we all know this, I'm not making a clever observation, but it's insanity, you know? When my daughter was 16, she would get together with all her friends but instead of talking to each other they'd be emailing or texting everyone who wasn't there yet. Do you see what I mean? They never actually- >> Texting selfies. What do they do when they get together? Just continue to talk to each other on their phones? >> It's completely vacuous, vacuous civilization. With the celebrity culture at the heart of its rottenness. >> Hollywood. >> So what effect do you think that has on the human brain, creativity, thinks like that? >> Well people are on technological devices all the time. They think now that the kids have less good social skills. And the point about human beings is we've always been good at technology, you know? In the 13th century when we were in the Holy Land, slaughtering Muslims, we were still able to build beautiful cathedrals. You see what I mean? So we can build things, and put men on the Moon. The only thing is we can't get on well together. So, which is more important? The answer is getting on well together, so we're now giving kids all the things that stop them from acquiring social skills. It's beyond mad, but people are after money, and so they will always do things, and always come up with excuses why what they're doing is actually good for the world, when it's all about that. >> What about the Hollywood situation. You mentioned in your speech about, when you were creative, when you were younger, and the process you went through, what's the state in your mind, of the Hollywood culture. I mean, they do a movie about Korea, and then Sony gets hacked. >> It's all a bit crazy, but I wrote two film scripts about ten years ago cos I thought to myself, can I make a living writing film scripts. And I did an adaptation of a children's book by Roald Dahl, called 'The Twits.', and I wrote something for Jeffrey Katzenberg about cavemen as an animation- who are you talking to? >> John F: He's saying we only have one minute. >> That's Greg Stewart. >> Oh okay. I can't be bothered to go on talking for one minute. (laughs) Though I have so many fascinating things to say, that I'm afraid (speaking off mic) >> Thanks, thanks for that. >> Thanks Greg, you're fired. (laughs) Greg's fired. >> The guy's going to lose their job if you walk off the set. >> John C: Good. >> Good, >> you're fired. (mic thumps on the desk) (laughs) >> Thank you very much.
