We're in downtown San Francisco at the OSIsoft show, it's called PI World. It's been going on for over 15 years. We've never been here before, we're excited to be here. Really is coming at it from the operations point of view, and they've been worrying about operations and operations efficiency for years. There's people walking around with 15-year pins, which is pretty amazing. I got my first one-year pin, so that's good. So we're excited to be here and dive into the details, because we've talked about IoT and industrial IoT, and kind of coming at it from the IT side, but these guys have been working at it from the OT side for years and years and years, almost 40 years. So our first guest is joining us. He's Remi Duquette, the Global Head - Applied AI and Datacenter at Clarity Lifecycle, it's a mouthful, for Maya Heat Transfer Technologies. Remi, nice to meet you. >> Very nice meeting you, thank you for having me. >> So, give us a little bit more detail on what Maya Heat Transfer is all about, and then we'll dive into some of the specific stuff you're working on. >> So Maya Heat Transfer started about 28 years ago in the simulation of heat and getting rid of all that heat that's being emitted by a lot of data centers, all the servers and the density that's occurring these days. And we've involved into developing a software solution, leveraging the PI infrastructure for real-time monitoring, and extended it beyond, for forecasting and doing all sorts of advanced analytics from that data. >> Right, so heat is the historical enemy of electronics, and has been forever. >> Yes, continuing to be so, for sure. >> And continuing to be so, and the data centers, you know, it's an interesting evolution in the data center space, because on one hand, they're consolidating data centers, or shutting down data centers, you've got this public cloud phenomenon. On the other hand, it's density, density, density, density, density, which probably is good opportunity for you guys. >> A great opportunity. Unfortunately, you know, the problems kind of are accentuated by exactly those phenomenon of consolidation, and the cloud, and the virtualization projects that are going on. So all of that combined, makes for a really big cocktail of heat and that heat needs to be dissipated somehow. And of course, the energy efficiency of all the machines are getting better and better, but at some point, it needs to be optimized, and that's where the software component, to remove the human in the loop, really to optimize that heat distribution and removal. >> So one of the big themes here at this show is finding inefficiency. This kind of continual quest for better efficiency and using data, and big data specifically, and sensor data, to be able to get that, find the inefficiency and act on the inefficiency. So what are some of the things that you guys look at? You've been at it for a long time, but there's still a lot more opportunities to find inefficiencies. Where are you still finding inefficiencies? >> Well, I mean, the main aspect is we have a lot of building automation systems and cooling loop systems, that have been programed to try and get to the best situation in any circumstances. And, really, when you look at what we're doing now, is applying artificial intelligence to augment the abilities of those systems, to better control and get to even a better place from an energy efficiency perspective. So that's really the latest evolution, to use that big data, to learn from that data, and then further optimize your cooling environment and your heat distribution. >> Right, now I'm curious what kind of new learnings came out of kind of the hyperscale players. Obviously, big public cloud players, Amazon and Azure, Google Cloud, have giant data centers, not only for their own core businesses, but now they're building them out as public clouds. Much bigger scale than the traditional corporate data centers. They're just operating at a whole different level. >> A whole new, yeah (laughs). >> So what are some of the things that have come out of those experiences that are different than the world pre-public cloud? >> Well, if you look at the pre-public, private cloud and public cloud, you had maybe, on average, five to six kilowatt per rack in a data center, was the average power consumed by those racks. Now we're looking, you know, some of our clients have up to 50 kilowatt per rack and now you need water-cooled elements into that rack, or other cooling elements that are being, helping the situation, 'cause those kinds of densities are producing a huge amount of heat, and that's really a big concern and a big shift from the enterprise level data center that was a little bit less of a consumer of that power. >> Right, now do you guys do anything outside of the data center? I know that's your area of specialties, but we've been doing a lot of autonomous vehicle shows, and one of the things that comes over and over and over is kind of the harsh environment for compute in a car or a truck or a bus or whatever. It's not a beautifully controlled with a lot of great backup power and diesel and air conditioning. Very rough environment. So what are some of the applications that you guys can use to help get that compute power in these vehicles? >> Well, actually the evolution for us more on the software side, was to apply our deep learning, artificial intelligence components and agents to other industries. So we're leveraging the forecasting capabilities of these deep learning agents to apply to other areas. So discrete manufacturing was one example, fleet optimization, so to go back to those edge devices, so we do a lot of fleet optimization, fuel optimization on these components. And that's completely outside the data center, but it's based on the same type of deep learning technologies that we've developed for the data center. >> And all the forecasts are, as more and more the compute and the store moves out to the edge, and you've got all the industrial devices running around in the centers, it's not new news for the group at this organization, >> No, clearly (chuckles). >> But you know, you're kind of shifting that load of the heat management from the data center out to the edge. >> To the edge, correct. So it does relieve a little bit of the, let's call it the pressure, inside the data center, but at the end of the day, the density of those cloud providers is just being accentuated by the sheer number of devices. So we thought there might be a shift towards the edge from a power, let's say a removal from the core data center, but in the end, it's actually the opposite that's happening. The power is really getting denser and denser inside the data center itself. >> So, last question before I let you go. What's your take on the vibe of the show, what's happening here at PI World? It's amazing, the international flavor as I'm walking around the halls. I'm seeing badges and hearing all kinds of languages. I mean, this is pretty hard-core, industrial internet happening right here. >> Oh yeah, I mean the operational technologies and the various applications and industries in which PI is used and leveraged worldwide is phenomenal. And it's a very vibrant show. It's actually quite good, when it comes down to it, a lot of people, the exchange between the end users together from different industries share their tips and tricks on how they've deployed, their various stories are just amazing. So a great, great, great PI World conference for sure. >> All right, good. Rachel Skaff, AWS | International Women's Day


 

(gentle music) >> Hello, and welcome to theCUBE's coverage of International Women's Day. I'm John Furrier, host of theCUBE. I've got a great guest here, CUBE alumni and very impressive, inspiring, Rachel Mushahwar Skaff, who's a managing director and general manager at AWS. Rachel, great to see you. Thanks for coming on. >> Thank you so much. It's always a pleasure to be here. You all make such a tremendous impact with reporting out what's happening in the tech space, and frankly, investing in topics like this, so thank you. >> It's our pleasure. Your career has been really impressive. You worked at Intel for almost a decade, and that company is very tech, very focused on Moore's law, cadence of technology power in the industry. Now at AWS, powering next-generation cloud. What inspired you to get into tech? How did you get here and how have you approached your career journey, because it's quite a track record? >> Wow, how long do we have? (Rachel and John laugh) >> John: We can go as long as you want. (laughs) It's great. >> You know, all joking aside, I think at the end of the day, it's about this simple statement. If you don't get goosebumps every single morning that you're waking up to do your job, it's not good enough. And that's a bit about how I've made all of the different career transitions that I have. You know, everything from building out data centers around the world, to leading network and engineering teams, to leading applications teams, to going and working for, you know, the largest semiconductor in the world, and now at AWS, every single one of those opportunities gave me goosebumps. And I was really focused on how do I surround myself with humans that are better than I am, smarter than I am, companies that plan in decades, but live in moments, companies that invest in their employees and create like artists? And frankly, for me, being part of a company where people know that life is finite, but they want to make an infinite impact, that's a bit about my career journey in a nutshell. >> Yeah. What's interesting is that, you know, over the years, a lot's changed, and a theme that we're hearing from leaders now that are heading up large teams and running companies, they have, you know, they have 20-plus years of experience under their belt and they look back and they say, "Wow, "things have changed and it's changing faster now, "hopefully faster to get change." But they all talk about confidence and they talk about curiosity and building. When did you know that this was going to be something that you got the goosebumps? And were there blockers in your way and how did you handle that? (Rachel laughs) >> There's always blockers in our way, and I think a lot of people don't actually talk about the blockers. I think they make it sound like, hey, I had this plan from day one, and every decision I've made has been perfect. And for me, I'll tell you, right, there are moments in your life that mark a differentiation and those moments that you realize nothing will be the same. And time is kind of divided into two parts, right, before this moment and after this moment. And that's everything from, before I had kids, that's a pretty big moment in people's lives, to after I had kids, and how do you work through some of those opportunities? Before I got married, before I got divorced. Before I went to this company, after I left this company. And I think the key for all of those is just having an insatiable curiosity around how do you continue to do better, create better and make better? And I'll tell you, those blockers, they exist. Coming back from maternity leave, hard. Coming back from a medical leave, hard. Coming back from caring for a sick parent or a sick friend, hard. But all of those things start to help craft who you are as a human being, not as a leader, but as a human being, and allows you to have some empathy with the people that you surround yourself with, right? And for me, it's, (sighs) you can think about these blockers in one of two ways. You can think about it as, you know, every single time that you're tempted to react in the same way to a blocker, you can be a prisoner of your past, or you can change how you react and be a pioneer of the future. It's not a blocker when you think about it in those terms. >> Mindset matters, and that's really a great point. You brought up something that's interesting, I want to bring this up. Some of the challenges in different stages of our lives. You know, one thing that's come out of this set of interviews, this, of day and in conversations is, that I haven't heard before, is the result of COVID, working at home brought empathy about people's personal lives to the table. That came up in a couple interviews. What's your reaction to that? Because that highlights that we're human, to your point of view. >> It does. It does. And I'm so thankful that you don't ask about balance because that is a pet peeve of mine, because there is no such thing as balance. If you're in perfect balance, you are not moving and you're not changing. But when you think about, you know, the impact of COVID and how the world has changed since that, it has allowed all of us to really think about, you know, what do we want to do versus what do we have to do? And I think so many times, in both our professional lives and our personal lives, we get caught up in doing what we think we have to do to get ahead versus taking a step back and saying, "Hey, what do I want to do? "And how do I become a, you know, "a better human?" And many times, John, I'm asked, "Hey, "how do you define success or achievement?" And, you know, my answer is really, for me, the greatest results that I've achieved, both personally and professionally, is when I eliminate the word success and balance from my vocabulary, and replace them with two words: What's my contribution and what's my impact? Those things make a difference, regardless of gender. And I'll tell you, none of it is easy, ever. I think all of us have been broken, we've been stretched, we've been burnt out. But I also think what we have to talk about as leaders in the industry is how we've also found endurance and resilience. And when we felt unsteady, we've continued to go forward, right? When we can't decide, the best answer is do what's uncomfortable. And all of those things really stemmed from a part of what happened with COVID. >> Yeah, yeah, I love the uncomfortable and the balance highlight. You mentioned being off balance. That means you're growing, you're not standing still. I want to get your thoughts on this because one thing that has come out again this year, and last year as well, is having a team with you when you do it. So if you're off balance and you're going to stretch, if you have a good team with you, that's where people help each other. Not just pick them up, but like maybe get 'em back on track again. So, but if you're solo, you fall, (laughs) you fall harder. So what's your reaction to that? 'Cause this has come up, and this comes up in team building, workforce formation, goal setting, contribution. What's your reaction to that? >> So my reaction to that that is pretty simple. Nobody gets there on their own at all, right? Passion and ambition can only take you so far. You've got to have people and teams that are supporting you. And here's the funny thing about people, and frankly, about being a leader that I think is really important: People don't follow for you. People follow for who you help them become. Think about that for a second. And when you think about all the amazing things that companies and teams are able to do, it's because of those people. And it's because you have leaders that are out there, inspiring them to take what they believe is impossible and turn it into the possible. That's the power of teams. >> Can you give an example of your approach on how you do that? How do you build your teams? How do you grow them? How do you lead them effectively and also make 'em inclusive, diverse and equitable? >> Whew. I'll give you a great example of some work that we're doing at AWS. This year at re:Invent, for the first time in its history, we've launched an initiative with theCUBE called Women of the Cloud. And part of Women of the Cloud is highlighting the business impact that so many of our partners, our customers and our employees have had on the social, on the economic and on the financials of many companies. They just haven't had the opportunity to tell their story. And at Amazon, right, it is absolutely integral to us to highlight those examples and continue to extend that ethos to our partners and our customers. And I think one of the things that I shared with you at re:Invent was, you know, as U2's Bono put it, (John laughs) "We'll build it better than we did before "and we are the people "that we've been waiting for." So if we're not out there, advocating and highlighting all the amazing things that other women are doing in the ecosystem, who will? >> Well, I've got to say, I want to give you props for that program. Not only was it groundbreaking, it's still running strong. And I saw some things on LinkedIn that were really impressive in its network effect. And I met at least half a dozen new people I never would have met before through some of that content interaction and engagement. And this is like the power of the current world. I mean, getting the voices out there creates momentum. And it's good for Amazon. It's not just personal brand building for my next job or whatever, you know, reason. It's sharing and it's attracting others, and it's causing people to connect and meet each other in that world. So it's still going strong. (laughs) And this program we did last year was part of Rachel Thornton, who's now at MessageBird, and Mary Camarata. They were the sponsors for this International Women's Day. They're not there anymore, so we decided we're going to do it again because the impact is so significant. We had the Amazon Education group on. It's amazing and it's free, and we've got to get the word out. I mean, talk about leveling up fast. You get in and you get trained and get certified, and there's a zillion jobs out (laughs) there in cloud, right, and partners. So this kind of leadership is really important. What was the key learnings that you've taken away and how do you extend this opportunity to nurture the talent out there in the field? Because when you throw the content out there from great leaders and practitioners and developers, it attracts other people. >> It does. It does. So look, I think there's two types of people, people that are focused on being and people who are focused on doing. And let me give you an example, right? When we think about labels of, hey, Rachel's a female executive who launched Women of the Cloud, that label really limits me. I'd rather just be a great executive. Or, hey, there's a great entrepreneur. Let's not be a great entrepreneur. Just go build something and sell it. And that's part of this whole Women of the cloud, is I don't want people focused on what their label is. I want people sharing their stories about what they're doing, and that's where the lasting impact happens, right? I think about something that my grandmother used to tell me, and she used to tell me, "Rachel, how successful "you are, doesn't matter. "The lasting impact that you have "is your legacy in this very finite time "that you have on Earth. "Leave a legacy." And that's what Women of the Cloud is about. So that people can start to say, "Oh, geez, "I didn't know that that was possible. "I didn't think about my career in that way." And, you know, all of those different types of stories that you're hearing out there. >> And I want to highlight something you said. We had another Amazonian on the program for this day earlier and she coined a term, 'cause inside Amazon, you have common language. One of them is bar raising. Raise the bar, that's an Amazonian (Rachel laughs) term. It means contribute and improve and raise the bar of capability. She said, "Bar raising is gender neutral. "The bar is a bar." And I'm like, wow, that was amazing. Now, that means your contribution angle there highlights that. What's the biggest challenge to get that mindset set in culture, in these- >> Oh. >> 'Cause it's that simple, contribution is neutral. >> It absolutely is neutral, but it's like I said earlier, I think so many times, people are focused on success and being a great leader versus what's the contribution I'm making and how am I doing as a leader, you know? And when it comes to a lot of the leadership principles that Amazon has, including bar raising, which means insisting on the highest standards, and then those standards continue to raise every single time. And what that is all about is having all of our employees figure out, how do I get better every single day, right? That's what it's about. It's not about being better than the peer next to you. It's about how do I become a better leader, a better human being than I was yesterday? >> Awesome. >> You know, I read this really cute quote and I think it really resonates. "You meditate to upgrade your software "and you work out to upgrade your hardware." And while it's important that we're all ourselves at work, we can't deny that a lot of times, ourselves still need that meditation or that workout. >> Well, I hope I don't have any zero days in my software out there, so, but I'm going to definitely work on that. I love that quote. I'm going to use that. Thank you very much. That was awesome. I got to ask you, I know you're really passionate about, and we've talked about this, around, so you're a great leader but you're also focused on what's behind you in the generation, pipelining women leaders, okay? Seats at the table, mentoring and sponsorship. What can we do to build a strong pipeline of leaders in technology and business? And where do you see the biggest opportunity to nurture the talent in these fields? >> Hmm, you know, that's great, great question. And, you know, I just read a "Forbes" article by another Amazonian, Tanuja Randery, who talked about, you know, some really interesting stats. And one of the stats that she shared was, you know, by 2030, less than 25% of tech specialists will be female, less than 25%. That's only a 6% growth from where we are in 2023, so in seven years. That's alarming. So we've really got to figure out what are the kinds of things that we're going to go do from an Amazon perspective to impact that? And one of the obvious starting points is showcasing tech careers to girls and young women, and talking openly about what a technology career looks like. So specifically at Amazon, we've got an AWS Git IT program that helps schools and educators bring in tech role models to show them what potential careers look like in tech. I think that's one great way that we can help build the pipeline, but once we get the pipeline, we also have to figure out how we don't let that pipeline leak. Meaning how do we keep women and, you know, young women on their tech career? And I think big part of that, John, is really talking about how hard it is, but it's also greater than you can ever imagine. And letting them see executives that are very authentic and will talk about, geez, you know, the challenges of COVID were a time of crisis and accelerated change, and here's what it meant to me personally and here's what we were able to solve professionally. These younger generations are all about social impact, they're about economic impact and they're about financial impact. And if we're not talking about all three of those, both from how AWS is leading from the front, but how its executives are also taking that into their personal lives, they're not going to want to go into tech. >> Yeah, and I think one of the things you mentioned there about getting people that get IT, good call out there, but also, Amazon's going to train 30 million people, put hundreds of millions of dollars into education. And not only are they making it easier to get in to get trained, but once you're in, even savvy folks that are in there still have to accelerate. And there's more ways to level up, more things are happening, but there's a big trend around people changing careers either in their late 20s, early 30s, or even those moments you talk about, where it's before and after, even later in the careers, 40s, 50s. Leaders like, well, good experience, good training, who were in another discipline who re-skilled. So you have, you know, more certifications coming in. So there's still other pivot points in the pipeline. It's not just down here. And that, I find that interesting. Are you seeing that same leadership opportunities coming in where someone can come into tech older? >> Absolutely. You know, we've got some amazing programs, like Amazon Returnity, that really focuses on how do we get other, you know, how do we get women that have taken some time off of work to get back into the workforce? And here's the other thing about switching careers. If I look back on my career, I started out as a civil engineer, heavy highway construction. And now I lead a sales team at the largest cloud company in the world. And there were, you know, twists and turns around there. I've always focused on how do we change and how do we continue to evolve? So it's not just focused on, you know, young women in the pipeline. It's focused on all gender and all diverse types throughout their career, and making sure that we're providing an inclusive environment for them to bring in their unique skillsets. >> Yeah, a building has good steel. It's well structured. Roads have great foundations. You know, you got the builder in you there. >> Yes. >> So I have to ask you, what's on your mind as a tech athlete, as an executive at AWS? You know, you got your huge team, big goals, the economy's got a little bit of a headwind, but still, cloud's transforming, edge is exploding. What's your outlook as you look out in the tech landscape these days and how are you thinking about it? What your plans? Can you share a little bit about what's on your mind? >> Sure. So, geez, there's so many trends that are top of mind right now. Everything from zero trust to artificial intelligence to security. We have more access to data now than ever before. So the opportunities are limitless when we think about how we can apply technology to solve some really difficult customer problems, right? Innovation sometimes feels like it's happening at a rapid pace. And I also say, you know, there are years when nothing happens, and then there's years when centuries happen. And I feel like we're kind of in those years where centuries are happening. Cloud technologies are refining sports as we know them now. There's a surge of innovation in smart energy. Everyone's supply chain is looking to transform. Custom silicon is going mainstream. And frankly, AWS's customers and partners are expecting us to come to them with a point of view on trends and on opportunities. And that's what differentiates us. (John laughs) That's what gives me goosebumps- >> I was just going to ask you that. Does that give you goosebumps? How could you not love technology with that excitement? I mean, AI, throw in AI, too. I just talked to Swami, who heads up the AI and database, and we just talked about the past 24 months, the change. And that is a century moment happening. The large language models, computer vision, more compute. Compute's booming than ever before. Who thought that was going to happen, is still happening? Massive change. So, I mean, if you're in tech, how can you not love tech? >> I know, even if you're not in tech, I think you've got to start to love tech because it gives you access to things you've never had before. And frankly, right, change is the only constant. And if you don't like change, you're going to like being irrelevant even less than you like change. So we've got to be nimble, we've got to adapt. And here's the great thing, once we figure it out, it changes all over again. And it's not something that's easy for any of us to operate. It's hard, right? It's hard learning new technology, it's hard figuring out what do I do next? But here's the secret. I think it's hard because we're doing it right. It's not hard because we're doing it wrong. It's just hard to be human and it's hard to figure out how we apply all this different technology in a way that positively impacts us, you know, economically, financially, environmentally and socially. >> And everyone's different, too. So you got to live those (mumbles). I want to get one more question in before we, my last question, which is about you and your impact. When you talk to your team, your sales, you got a large sales team, North America. And Tanuja, who you mentioned, is in EMEA, we're going to speak with her as well. You guys lead the front lines, helping customers, but also delivering the revenue to the company, which has been fantastic, by the way. So what's your message to the troops and the team out there? When you say, "Take that hill," like what is the motivational pitch, in a few sentences? What's the main North Star message in today's marketplace when you're doing that big team meeting? >> I don't know if it's just limited to a team meeting. I think this is a universal message, and the universal message for me is find your edge, whatever that may be. Whether it is the edge of what you know about artificial intelligence and neural networks or it's the edge of how do we migrate our applications to the cloud more quickly. Or it's the edge of, oh, my gosh, how do I be a better parent and still be great at work, right? Find your edge, and then sharpen it. Go to the brink of what you think is possible, and then force yourself to jump. Get involved. The world is run by the people that show up, professionally and personally. (John laughs) So show up and get started. >> Yeah as Steve Jobs once said, "The future "that everyone looks at was created "by people no smarter than you." And I love that quote. That's really there. Final question for you. I know we're tight on time, but I want to get this in. When you think about your impact on your company, AWS, and the industry, what's something you want people to remember? >> Oh, geez. I think what I want people to remember the most is it's not about what you've said, and this is a Maya Angelou quote. "It's not about what you've said to people "or what you've done, "it's about how you've made them feel." And we can all think back on leaders or we can all think back on personal moments in our lives where we felt like we belonged, where we felt like we did something amazing, where we felt loved. And those are the moments that sit with us for the rest of our lives. I want people to remember how they felt when they were part of something bigger. I want people to belong. Kate Goodall, Halcyon | Women in Tech: International Women's Day


 

>>Yeah. Hello and welcome to the Cuba's International Women's Showcase, featuring International Women's Day. I'm John, host of the Kiwi here in California. Great remote guest. She's amazing founder and C e O of Cuba, and great to see you. Okay, thanks for coming on. Um, good to see you. >>You as well. Always a pleasure. You >>know, International Women's Day is the big celebration. We're doing a lot of interviews with great people making things happen, moving and shaking things. Um, but every day, International Women's Day, As far as I'm concerned, it's happening all around the world. But these are stories of innovation, the stories of changes, the stories of transformation for the better. You've been doing a lot of things. Um and I want to get into that. But let's start with your background. Tell us a bit about who you are and what you've got going on. >>Yeah, my background is a little strange. I used to be a maritime archaeologists. So dumb shit breaks for a little bit. That was amazing. I always just It's only partial just because it's actually a bit of truth to it, that learning how to, you know, handle things at depth really does train you to be a C e o. Because you learn to control your breath and and focus on the things that matter and not be so reactive because it's three activity that will panic that will kill you. Uh, always knowing how to reframe. Return to the basics. Um, there's a really good things to hold on to, even in the world of business. Right? So I at some point, ended up doing doing a lot of things. Largely business development, following my time diving and amazing woman. Um, another woman for International Women's Day named Doctor who was a biotech entrepreneur from Japan, stepping down as her role at the helm of her company. Um, and she wanted to launch a space for a young innovators from around the world who are doing amazing work to tackle this very complex challenges we all know exist, um, and figure out a way to give them time and space to do their best work and pursue their their highest visions for change. We decided that we would focus on for-profit companies largely who were using sustainable, scalable business models to pursue both profit and purpose. Um creating a virtuous cycle between the return of money to a company and putting that into to go even further and faster towards, um, solving a problem. Um, so we now have companies over 200 companies from around the world that we have helped support tackling every single, sustainable development goal. Um, and I'm proud to say, you know, particularly related to the subject that fifty-nine percent of our companies have a woman founder or CO-FOUNDER. Um, and 69% of the founder of color. Um, so we're working with entrepreneurs from every every area of the world. Many approximate to the problem that they are trying to solve, so they intimately understand it. Um, and they're doing amazing things. >>Yeah, you can help the great mission. You have a lot of other things going on your helping women encouraging them to your career in the tech sector. Um, good statistics could be better, right? Is higher and better. So, um, what are you guys doing? What, you specifically to help and encourage women to forge their career and tech? >>Yeah. I mean, look, the good news is I do think that it's getting better. I particularly think that we will see the adventure is improving. Um, it takes a while because the companies that have been funded up until now are still working in the biggest amount in the later stages. So I think that percentage hasn't been shifting. But I have to believe that that's a bit of an illusion, and then a couple of years, we're going to start to sea level out. But you know as well as I do that they're pretty poultry statistics in terms of the amount of venture that women like cos. Capture, Um, and the other ways that women are doubted, um, in terms of their ability and potential. Um, so we we love to work with any underrepresented group of entrepreneurs, and there's ways that we do that whether it's helping them sort of find their power and hold space and be confident. And, um, you know, be able to pitch to any room, talk to any investor, talk to any customer but also working to be directed about some of the systemic challenges, both in terms of talking to existing investors and trying to educate them to see the opportunities that they're missing because there is a an economic imperative to them understanding what they're missing. Um, but there's also some things that we're doing in-house to make sure that we're also helping to close capital gaps for all our entrepreneurs. So we actually now have a suite of three capital mechanisms that are entrepreneurs can access on the back end of our incubator, a microphone fund, which is very quick turnaround, small amounts of capital for entrepreneurs who existing opportunities owns, which is a tax destination. Just this in the U. S. But that's meant to be deployed so that they can access capital towards revenue without credit checks, collateral being put up, a slow moving pace of banks and C. D. S s. It's particularly useful for people who may not raise venture. And it's useful for, uh, you know, people who maybe don't have that friends and family check that they can expect similar. We've got a great angel network who look at the best impact deals from around the world. Um, and it doesn't have to be a housing company, just a great venture that's pursuing impact on profit. Um, and then lastly, we're just about to announce that we have a fund of our own on the back end of our incubator that funds only healthy and companies. Um, it's an early stage fund. Um, but watch this space because our pipeline is just increasing your every year. We used to sort of just 16 companies here. Now, we're serving 60 this year, so, um, yeah, it's really exciting. Um, and so obviously, it's really great that, you know, we're going to be able to help scale the impact that we want to see. Uh, ideally a lot. A lot faster. >>Well, you definitely taking control. I remember when we had a few years ago. I think four years ago, you just thinking about getting going and going now with great tailwind. Um, >>and the diversity >>of sources of capital as well as diversity of firms is increasing. That's helping, uh, that we're seeing, but you're also got the back end fun for the housing companies. But also, you've been involved in we capital for a long time. Can you talk about that? Because that's a specific supporting women entrepreneurs initiative. Um, yeah. What's up with capital share? That >>was That was another venture that I-i embarked on with such coz. Um as well as Sheila Johnson and Jonny Adam, Person who runs Rethink Impact. We capital is a group of about 16 women that I pulled together women investors to invest through rethink impact, which is another fun that is looking for impact businesses but predominantly looking for those businesses that are led by women. So this investment group is women supporting women. Um, through the use of deployment of capital, um, they're doing amazingly well. They've had some really stunning news recently that I'll let you dig up. >>I'll definitely thanks for the lead there. I'm gonna go jump on that story. >>Yeah, >>the Okay, Thanks for that lead on that trend, though in Silicon Valley and certainly in other areas that are hot like New York, Boston and D. C. Where you're at, um, you're seeing now multiple years in almost a decade in of the pioneers of these women, only funds or women only firms and your investment. Um, and it's starting to increase to under all underrepresented minorities and entrepreneurs. Right? So take us through how you see that because it's just getting more popular. Is that going to continue to accelerate in your mind? Are their networks of networks. They cross pollinating. >>Yeah, I think you know, it's It's I'm glad to see it. And, you know, it's been a long time coming. I think you know, I think we all look forward to a future where it's not necessary. Um, and you know, funds. Just invest in everyone Until then, making sure that we have specific pools of capital allocated to ensure that that, you know, those entrepreneurs who have not always been equally represented get to pursue their ideas not just because they deserve to pursue their ideas, but because the world needs their ideas. Right. And as I mentioned, there is a business imperative, right? We've got lots of examples of businesses like banks that you wouldn't have gotten a shot just because the investors just didn't understand the opportunity. Um, and I think that's normal. That's human. It happens to everyone. You are successful as an investor largely because you recognize patterns. And if something is, you know, outside of your life experience, you are not going to identify it. So it's very important that we create different kinds of capital run by different types of people. Um, and, uh, and you know. I know lots of investors have every type that are investing in these funds because they recognize that, you know, perhaps the highest growth potential is gonna come out of these, you know, particular kind of funds, which is really exciting. >>That's super important, because half the world is women, and that's just like the population is inspired by many new ventures. And that's super exciting trend. I wanna ask you about your other areas of doing a lot of work in the queue has been to buy multiple times, um, initially reporting on a region out there, and that's certainly isn't important part of the world. Um, you've got a lot of good news going on there. Can you share what's going on with, uh, the social entrepreneurship going on in Bahrain around the region? >>Yeah, I'm happy to. We we've actually been so privileged to work with a W S for a very long time. Almost since the start of the incubator they've supported are entrepreneurs, all of our entrepreneurs with access to cloud credits and services. Um, and we've sort of double down with a W S in the last couple of years in areas where We both want to create an uplift, um, for small businesses and rapidly growing tax solutions to these these social environmental problems. We see. So there's been an excellent partner to do that. And one of the areas we did in the water was with rain, particularly with women, tech startups, women tech startups in Bahrain. Yeah, we did that last year. We had an amazing group of women over in D. C. Um, and we continue to support them. One of them is actually in the process of raising. I think she just closed her seed round recently. And that's why for, um, al yet, um, and she created playbook, which is an amazing, uh, platform for women to take master classes and network and really sort of level up, as one says, Um, but also, um, the mall of work. Um uh, just really talented women over in Bahrain, um, pushing the envelope and all sorts of directions, and it was wonderful to get the opportunity to work with them. Um, that has now spawned another set of programs serving entrepreneurs in the Middle East in North Africa. They were also working on with us as well as the U S. State Department. Um, so we're going to be working for the next two years with entrepreneurs to help our recovery from covid. Um, in China. Um, and then I'm also proud to say that we're working with a W s in South Africa because there is just an extraordinary energy, you know, in the continent, Um, and some amazing entrepreneurial minds working on, you know, the many problems and opportunities that they're facing and recognizing. Um So we're supporting, you know, companies that are working on finding, um, skilled refugees to be able to help them resettle and use their talents and make money. Um, sadly, are very relevant company now with what's going on in Ukraine. Um, but also, uh, zombie and satellite company, um, companies that are preventing food, food waste by providing, um, solar-powered refrigerators to rural areas in South Africa. Um, so a lot of, um, you know, just incredible talent and ideas that we're seeing globally. Um, and happy to be doubling down on that with the help of a W s. >>That's awesome. Yeah, following the work when we met in D. C. And again, you always had this international view um it's International Women's Day. It's not North America >>Women's Day. It's >>International Women's Day. Can you share your thoughts on how that landscape is changing outside the U. S. For example, and around the world and how the international peace is important and you mentioned pattern matching? Um, you also, when you see patterns, they become trends. What do you see forming that have been that that are locked in on the U. C they're locked in on that are happening that are driving. What are some of those trends that you see on the international side that's evolving? >>Yeah. You know, I think the wonderful opportunity with the Internet and social media is that, you know, both, uh, we can be more transparent about areas for improvement and put a little pressure where maybe things are moving fast enough. We've all seen the power of that, Um, the other, um, you know, things that certainly in countries where women maybe as free to move and operate, they can still acquire skills education they can set up cos they can do so so much. Um, you know, through these amazing technologies that we now have at our disposal growing an amazing rates. Um, they can connect via zoom. Right? I think that while the pandemic definitely set women back and we should acknowledge that, um, uh, the things that the pandemic perhaps helped us to exponentially scale will move women forward. And perhaps that's the target to hang on to, to feel optimistic about where we're headed. >>And also, there's a lot of problems to solve. And I think one of the things we're seeing you mentioned the Ukraine situation. You're seeing the geopolitical landscape changing radically with technology driving a lot of value. So with problems comes opportunities. Um, innovation plays a big role. Can you share some of the successful stories that you were inspired by that you've seen, um, in the past couple of years. And as you look forward, what What some of those innovation stories look like? And what are you inspired by? >>Yeah. I mean, there's so, so many. Um, you know, we just, uh, had a couple of entrepreneurs, and just the last year, Um, you know, after I think everyone sort of took an initial breath with the pandemic, They realize that they either had an opportunity or they had a problem to solve to your point. Um, and they did that well or not. And or some of them, you know, just didn't didn't have any more cards to play and had to really pivot. Um, it was really interesting to see how everyone handled handled that particular moment in time. One company that I think of is everywhere. Um, and she had created a wearable device that you can just put on your ear. It looks like an earring right at the top of your ear. Um, and it was for her for herself because she suffered from pulmonary complications. And, uh, without more discreet wearable, you know, had to wear a huge device and look around and oxygen tank and, you know, just to sort of have a good quality of life. Um, it turns out, obviously, during covid, that is a very useful item, not just for patients suffering from covid and wanting to know what their oxygen levels were doing, but also potentially athletics. So, um, she's really been able to double down as a result of the trends from the pandemic. Um, and I'm really proud of part of her. And that's actually where another great one that we just just came through. Our last 15 is Maya. Um, and she had a brick and mortar store. Um, uh, called Cherry Blossom. Intimate where she helped women have an enjoyable experience finding, uh, and fitting bras post mastectomy to include sort of, you know, the necessary, um, prosthetics and things like that. Um, she even made it so that you could go with your friends who haven't had a mistake, and she could also find some lovely luxury. Um, but the pandemic meant that that experience was sort of off the table. Um, and what they did was she decided to make it a technological one. So now she's she's essentially will be part of it. You can, you know, go to my, um, online. And you can, um, you know, order, uh, measure yourself, work with a specialist, all online, get a few different options, figure out the one that's perfect for you and the rest back. Um, and I don't think without the pandemic, that would not have happened. So she's now able to serve exponentially more. Um, you know, women who deserve to feel like themselves post it to me. >>That's also a model and inspirational. I have to ask you for the young women out there watching. What advice would you share with them as they navigate into a world that's changing and evolving and getting better with other women, mentors and entrepreneurs and or just an ecosystem of community? What advice would you give them as they step into the world and have to engage and experience life? >>Yeah, gosh, part of me always wants to resist that they don't listen to anyone to do you follow your heart, follow your gut, or at least be careful who you listen to because a lot of people will want to give you advice. I would >>say, Uh, that's good advice. Don't take my advice. Well, you've been a great leader. Love the work, you're doing it and I'll say N D. C. But all around the world and again, there's so much change going on with innovation. I mean, just the advances in technology across the board, from with machine learning and AI from linguistics and understanding. And I think we're going to be a bigger community. Your thoughts on as you see community organically becoming a big part of how people are engaging. What's your what's your view As you look out across the landscape, communities becoming a big part of tribes. What's your vision on how the role of communities place? >>You know, we we actually do you think a lot about community and healthy. And we say that are you know, alchemy really is providing space, you know, physical and mental space to think, um, access access to capital access to networks, Um, community, Um, and the community piece is very, very important. Are entrepreneurs leave us like the number one thing that they miss is being among like-minded, um, you know, slightly slightly crazy audacious people. Um, and I often joked that we're building a kind army because it is, you know, it's people who want to do it differently if people want to do it with integrity. Is people who are in it for a very different motivations than just money. Um, and, you know, you start to feel the power of that group together and its entirety and what that might look like as as a community solving global problems. Um, and it really is inspiring. Um, I do think that people are starving for FaceTime and people time, real human time after the pandemic, I think they won't go away. It's a great tool, but we all want a little bit of that, and I will mention just along those lines. And if you don't mind a quick plug for an event that we're having March 16, Um, also in partnership with a W s called Build her relevant to International Women's Day as well. People can, either. If they're in the city, they can come in person. But we also have a virtual program, and we'll be listening to some of the most inspiring. I'm Lisa Martin, and I've got two Cube alum here with me, please welcome Merim Becirovic, Managing Director of Global IT Enterprise Architecture at Accenture and Chris Wegmann, Accenture, AWS Business Group technology and practices, Senior Managing Director, gentlemen, welcome back to the program. >> Thank you, Lisa, great to be back. >> Thank you, Lisa. Great to be here. >> It is nice to be back in a way right here we are at this hybrid event, but we want to talk about what Accenture is doing with its, with AWS to serving its clients. And then we're going to get into your own internal use case, drinking your own champagne. Chris go ahead and start with you, talk to us about what Accenture is doing with AWS to serve its clients. >> Yeah, Lisa, it's exciting, as you said to be back in this hybrid event and you know, for me, this will be my 10th re-invent and for Accenture we're in year 14 of our partnership with AWS and actually year six of our partnership called Accenture AWS business group. And you know, the focus over the last year has been helping our clients come out of the pandemic stronger than, than where they started. Right? And a lot of that has been around focusing our customers, getting past cloud migration, past cloud modernization, and getting further into what we now call the cloud continuum, starting to truly leverage all the AWS assets and capabilities and services to, to truly speed their transformation. You know, we work with a lot of our customers who are needing to transform even faster today than they were before the pandemic. And, you know, we're focused on helping those customers do that with AWS services. >> So Merim, let's bring you into the conversation. Now Accenture's internal IT organization has been leveraging AWS and public cloud for a while. Talk to me about that you completed the journey a couple of years ago, 95% in the cloud. Talk to me about what you're doing there. >> Sure. Lisa, so our, our journey into the public cloud is complete. As you said, we put a bow on that project a couple of years ago. We started in 2015 and we went all in on public cloud. So we, the number 95%, 95% represents a true measure of everything it takes to run Accenture. Everything addressable is in the public cloud today. So the 95% just represents a small component of things that have to live outside of the cloud. But other than that, our journey to the cloud is complete, and we are very happy being in the cloud because it has opened tremendous doors for us as a business. I'm sure we'll talk about here as we go, but it's fundamentally a different place we live in today and where we were before we were in the cloud. >> Merim, you said something really powerful there a second ago. The Accenture's journey to the cloud is complete. I don't think I'd ever heard anybody say that. Talk to me about the impact, especially during the last 18 months that that cloud journey is delivered. >> I mean, one of the things I am extremely proud of for our collective global teams around the world, when the, obviously the, you know, when COVID hit and the pandemic engulf the world, the only difference for us was that people just did not come into an office to work. Our capabilities in the cloud, our capabilities of having everything in the cloud really made it that much easier for our people to go to work. We weren't fighting over resources around infrastructure. People could just work from home directly. So I'm extremely proud of the collective global team that made all of that happen as part of that execution of all those things. So it was really a very proud moment, I would say for all of us running IT. >> As well, it should be. Chris, talk about that from your perspective of facilitating that massive pivot 18, 19 months ago, and what your group was responsible for doing to enable this cloud journey to be complete. >> Yeah. I always laughed at, you know, Merim and our internal CIO organizations, we call it was our first customer, right. You know, way back when I started working in this partnership, you know, we were already starting to leverage AWS, S3 and EC2, and that insight Accenture, and we took a lot of those best practices and started helping, our clients leverages best practices. So, you know, from an Accenture, we always kind of harvest from internally what we're doing, but, you know, over the last several years, we really are our focused with the CIO organization, Merim's organization has been, you know, expanding the usage of non, you know, I, as I call Maya services, right? So past EC2, you know, past S3. Obviously there's always storage. There's always compute, but you know, truly doing and building serverless applications, truly using, you know, services, fully managed services. So, you know, the CIO organization doesn't have to spend their time doing that. And, for our customers, that's while it's, they're still early on in a lot of their journeys, that's a novel idea is a truly try to sunset IS services or EC2 and things like that, you know, and whether that's, you know, fix some containerization or things like that, I think the other big part is, is the maturing security footprint, right? Obviously, as you use one or more of these AWS services, your security posture, your presence, how you think about security. We created an asset called secure cloud foundation, leveraging many of the AWS services in the security space that have come out like guard duty and others really to help make that security foundation stronger, make it easier for our customers, including CIO to leverage those services and truly enable that move further up the cloud or further down the continuum as we call it. >> Merim, I want to get your thoughts on security from in a, because we have seen such a dramatic change in the threat landscape in the last 18, 19 months. We've seen a huge spike in ransomware. It's getting much more personal. It's now a household word. We've got the executive order. We had this rapid pivot to and hundreds of thousands of Accenture employees working from home. Talk to me about, you feel very confident in the cloud during that you didn't word where's your competence from a security perspective. >> As you said, security is the fastest growth in our business. Collectively, like you said, the bad guys don't sleep. We don't sleep either when it comes to security. One of the things that we're constantly thinking about is how do we turn on a lot of our capabilities as an example. So even, I would say at an enterprise level, it's different when you're running a big multinational corporation, 650,000 people like we do. We can't just turn everything on and hope for the best. We are very scripted in terms of how we think about those services, how we think about the processes, how we work with our CSO organization, so that we're very meticulous and very thorough in terms of what services we turn on, how we turn them on, when we turn them on? How long we make them available, because this is, this is the new world, right? We have extended our corporate structure out into the cloud. That means we have to think of different ways for how we want to consume those capabilities and services. So like Chris said, you know, the, the journey to the cloud for us is complete. A lot of it was I, as I would tell you, a lot of it was lift and shift for less. And we can talk about that if we get time, but it was more about getting into the cloud and taking advantage of the cloud where we are today, because now that we're there, we get to take advantage of all those capabilities that are there. And I would say the best part of being with on, in, in the cloud is also having the, the providers like AWS they are with us, helping us with that security posture. So it's not just us doing this by ourselves. >> So Chris, I want to talk about that Merim just said, this was mostly lift and shift. Talk to us about that. Cause when we talk to organizations in every industry, the cloud transition, the cloud journey is extremely challenging. It's complex. How did you do this? How did you facilitate this and in a relatively short time period, Chris? >> Yeah. And, and you're right. Everyone has conversations I have with my clients. You know, there's a huge debate whether to lift and shift or modernize or build new build cloud native, right? So, you know, in Accenture's situation, you know, very early on, it was identified that we can, we can do a large savings by doing a lift and shift migration, right. We were not a big data center owner, right. That wasn't, we're not a big capital intense organization. So for us, that, that journey we had, you know, colos and that stuff coming up for renewal. And we knew that we could, you know, get some early savings there and really, you know, reduce our footprint and take that investment and then invest it into, you know, true modernization. So Merim and his organization worked very closely to build the factory, to do the migrations, get that done in a very short amount of time and then turn their attention on truly refactoring rebuilding the applications. I'm super proud of the number of applications that we've rebuilt. I'm super proud of the number of applications that, that now are cloud native. And we live in these applications every day. You know, they they're everything from our performance to how we do our payroll and do our time charging and things like that. But which, you know, it was a big reason why, you know, we can access our systems remotely and at home versus going into different systems to get to that stuff. So, you know, it was very much heavily lift and shift early, then really focusing on modernization. And as Merim said, getting, you know, now it's about living there and continuing, continuing to modernize, continuing to accelerate what we're doing in the cloud. >> Yeah. Lisa, its little bit like, so our journey lift and shift was a core component of it. But the minute we decided to go to the cloud, one of the things, the first things we did, as I said, no more vans. So any new capability that we were going to build, we were going to build a cloud native micro-services based, and that's been our standard for the last 3 or 4 years ago. So any new capability that comes along today that we must do custom, we build a cloud native microservices because one of the other things that I've got on my plate is I'm trying to reduce our overall technical debt. So all of these IS platforms, I still have to maintain them, patch them, support them, upgrade them. And I would rather be much more efficient at doing those things as, as I can and reinvest money into refactoring and modernizing the rest of the application, plead through containers through microservices, et cetera, which then gives me the agility right back to actually go even faster, to enable more services for the business. >> Speed is something that we've seen become even more critical in the last 18, 19 months where we needed to everybody pivot businesses multiple times over and over. But part of the challenge there Merim, I want to get your thoughts on this is they are something cultural shift. Talk to me about, you've been at Accenture for a long time. Talk to me about the cultural shift needed to facilitate this massive transformation to cloud and how Chris's team was a facilitator of that. >> So, you know, one of the things for us, I have probably in the last five years spoken to a thousand of our clients, around our cloud journey and this culture conversation always comes up and I will say, you know, the biggest thing for us was interesting. We had those same fears. We had some same in when we first talked about going to the cloud, you know, six years ago, it was very, not everything was there, that's there today. So the teams were extremely nervous and they were confident that we could never be as, as good in the cloud as we were on, on site. Yet here we are six years later and we're constantly finding ways to add value and take, bring value back. And though, it's so same teams. And one of the things is just, we gave them the challenge to say, Hey, this is the future. We're telling our clients, this is where we're going. We have an opportunity here to do something different and they took it and the team really took it on. And they said, okay, let's do it. And they act, and we looked at how we run into cloud the many different ways, whether we're using reserved instances, whether we're using containers, whether we're using, you know, different computer capabilities, we went through all of it and we're running such a highly efficient machine right now that it's like, we're still able to continue to eat out savings even five years after the program. Even two years after the program is complete, we're still able to get savings. >> That's outstanding. That's ROI that every business and every industry hopes to be able to achieve from this. I want to switch gears a little bit now because this is actually pretty cool. Accenture is really focused also on sustainability. You guys have signed onto the Amazon climate pledge, which if you don't know what the Amazon climate pledge, and this is back in 2019, Amazon, co-founded this a commitment to be net zero carbon across businesses by 2040, which is actually 10 years ahead of the Paris agreement. You're in talk to us about that. And from Accenture's perspective, why it was important to sign on to that. >> So on a, on a personal level, I love obviously sustainability as a whole, that I think about the world park for my children that are growing up. So it's very important to me on a personal level as well. But I would say at a company level, what I love about the cloud is I am there right there with them as they make investments. All of our enterprise capabilities are there. We are able to very quickly shift and use those capabilities. So as Amazon, for example, in this scenario creates new capabilities, new compute offerings, new, new storage offerings, whatever it may be. They're doing it with a sustainability lens and me by being in the cloud already, I can then turn to start using those things too. So as much as I can, on that perspective, I'm in a great place with, as Amazon puts these sustainability capabilities out there, I'm right there consuming and making them more efficient. And then the other one is obviously as much of our workloads, as we can get to a cloud native perspective, microservices perspective, then we keep reducing that compute consumption and everything else that goes along with it. And lastly, I would say, you know, the, the other thing is we're very aggressive in managing all of our systems in terms of uptime. So for example, in a data center, most, most organizations don't think about turning off their development environments and everything else. But for us, we're very rigid in this process. And we have a, we have a target of all of our development environments being down 55% of the time. And primarily that's also a sustainability play in addition to a financial savings plan. >> Awesome. Great stuff, Chris, last question for you, as we wrap up here, what are some of the things that you were excited about that's coming in cloud in the next few years? Obviously here we are at, re-invent going to be hearing a lot of news, a lot of announcements about cloud in the coming days. What excites you most, Chris? >> Yeah. You know, obviously the machine learning and AI stuff is, is always the most exciting things right now in cloud. And, you know, we've put a lot of those to use here inside of Accenture as well. And, and our, you know, in our synopsis platform, which we use with our customers to run in a more intelligent operations, we use that internally as well. But you know, one of the things that excites me the most is the continued innovation at the core. Right. And you know, whether that be, you know, chip sets, you know, Merim talked a little bit about, you know, improvement and performance improvement and power consumption, you know, grabbing time, those types of stuff that, that excites me every year, I look forward to seeing what, what they come out with and, and then how we're going to put that to use. >> Well, I look forward to talking to you guys next year, you've done such a tremendous job. You should be proud of the massive transformation that you've done. I imagine this is, would be a great case study. If it's not already written up, it should be. It's really impressive. Great to be here. >> It is nice to be back in a way right here we are at this hybrid event, but we want to talk about what Accenture is doing with its, with AWS to serving its clients. And then we're going to get into your own internal use case, drinking your own champagne. Chris go ahead and start with you, talk to us about what Accenture is doing with AWS to serve its clients. >> Yeah, Lisa, it's exciting, as you said to be back in this hybrid event and you know, for me, this will be my 10th re-invent and for Accenture we're in year 14 of our partnership with AWS and actually year six of our partnership called Accenture AWS business group. And you know, the focus over the last year has been helping our clients come out of the pandemic stronger than, than where they started. Right? And a lot of that has been around focusing our customers, getting past cloud migration, past cloud modernization, and getting further into what we now call the cloud continuum, starting to truly leverage all the AWS assets and capabilities and services to, to truly speed their transformation. You know, we work with a lot of our customers who are needing to transform even faster today than they were before the pandemic. And, you know, we're focused on helping those customers do that with AWS services. >> So Merim, let's bring you into the conversation. Now Accenture's internal IT organization has been leveraging AWS and public cloud for a while. Talk to me about that you completed the journey a couple of years ago, 95% in the cloud. Talk to me about what you're doing there. >> Sure. Lisa, so our, our journey into the public cloud is complete. As you said, we put a bow on that project a couple of years ago. We started in 2015 and we went all in on public cloud. So we, the number 95%, 95% represents a true measure of everything it takes to run Accenture. Everything addressable is in the public cloud today. So the 95% just represents a small component of things that have to live outside of the cloud. But other than that, our journey to the cloud is complete, and we are very happy being in the cloud because it has opened tremendous doors for us as a business. Docker is launching innovation everywhere. Join us on the journey to build, share, run the future. >>Hello and welcome to Docker con 2021. We're incredibly excited to have more than 80,000 of you join us today from all over the world. As it was last year, this year at DockerCon is 100% virtual and 100% free. So as to enable as many community members as possible to join us now, 100%. Virtual is also an acknowledgement of the continuing global pandemic in particular, the ongoing tragedies in India and Brazil, the Docker community is a global one. And on behalf of all Dr. Khan attendees, we are donating $10,000 to UNICEF support efforts to fight the virus in those countries. Now, even in those regions of the world where the pandemic is being brought under control, virtual first is the new normal. It's been a challenging transition. This includes our team here at Docker. And we know from talking with many of you that you and your developer teams are challenged by this as well. So to help application development teams better collaborate and ship faster, we've been working on some powerful new features and we thought it would be fun to start off with a demo of those. The one about updates and the docs landing page Smith, the doc combat and more prominence. >>Yeah. I've got something working on my local machine. I haven't committed anything yet. I was thinking we could try, um, that new Docker dev environments feature. >>Yeah, that's cool. So if you hit the share button, what I should do is it will take all of your code and the dependencies and the image you're basing it on and wrap that up as one image for me. And I can then just monitor all my machines that have been one click, like, and then have it side by side, along with the changes I've been looking at as well, because I was also having a bit of a look and then I can really see how it differs to what I'm doing. Maybe I can combine it to do the best of both worlds. >>Sounds good. Uh, let me get that over to you, >>Wilson. Yeah. If you pay with the image name, I'll get that started up. >>All right. Sen send it over >>Cheesy. Okay, great. Let's have a quick look at what you he was doing then. So I've been messing around similar to do with the batter. I've got movie at the top here and I think it looks pretty cool. Let's just grab that image from you. Pick out that started on a dev environment. What this is doing. It's just going to grab the image down, which you can take all of the code, the dependencies only get brunches working on and I'll get that opened up in my idea. Ready to use. It's a here close. We can see our environment as my Molly image, just coming down there and I've got my new idea. >>We'll load this up and it'll just connect to my dev environment. There we go. It's connected to the container. So we're working all in the container here and now give it a moment. What we'll do is we'll see what changes you've been making as well on the code. So it's like she's been working on a landing page as well, and it looks like she's been changing the banner as well. So let's get this running. Let's see what she's actually doing and how it looks. We'll set up our checklist and then we'll see how that works. >>Great. So that's now rolling. So let's just have a look at what you use doing what changes she had made. Compare those to mine just jumped back into my dev container UI, see that I've got both of those running side by side with my changes and news changes. Okay. So she's put Molly up there rather than mobi or somebody had the same idea. So I think in a way I can make us both happy. So if we just jumped back into what we'll do, just add Molly and Moby and here I'll save that. And what we can see is, cause I'm just working within the container rather than having to do sort of rebuild of everything or serve, or just reload my content. No, that's straight the page. So what I can then do is I can come up with my browser here. Once that's all refreshed, refresh the page once hopefully, maybe twice, we should then be able to see your refresh it or should be able to see that we get Malia mobi come up. So there we go, got Molly mobi. So what we'll do now is we'll describe that state. It sends us our image and then we'll just create one of those to share with URI or share. And we'll get a link for that. I guess we'll send that back over to you. >>So I've had a look at what you were doing and I'm actually going to change. I think that might work for both of us. I wondered if you could take a look at it. If I send it over. >>Sounds good. Let me grab the link. >>Yeah, it's a dev environment link again. So if you just open that back in the doc dashboard, it should be able to open up the code that I've changed and then just run it in the same way you normally do. Everyone we'll have more of this later in the keynote. So stay tuned. Let's say earlier, we've all been challenged by this past year, whether the COVID pandemic, the complete evaporation of customer demand in many industries, unemployment or business bankruptcies, we all been touched in some way. And yet, even to miss these tragedies last year, we saw multiple sources of hope and inspiration. For example, in response to COVID we saw global communities, including the tech community rapidly innovate solutions for analyzing the spread of the virus, sequencing its genes and visualizing infection rates. In fact, if all in teams collaborating on solutions for COVID have created more than 1,400 publicly shareable images on Docker hub. As another example, we all witnessed the historic landing and exploration of Mars by the perseverance Rover and its ingenuity drone. >>Now what's common in these examples, these innovative and ambitious accomplishments were made possible not by any single individual, but by teams of individuals collaborating together. The power of teams is why we've made development teams central to Docker's mission to build tools and content development teams love to help them get their ideas from code to cloud as quickly as possible. One of the frictions we've seen that can slow down to them in teams is that the path from code to cloud can be a confusing one, riddle with multiple point products, tools, and images that need to be integrated and maintained an automated pipeline in order for teams to be productive. That's why a year and a half ago we refocused Docker on helping development teams make sense of all this specifically, our goal is to provide development teams with the trusted content, the sharing capabilities and the pipeline integrations with best of breed third-party tools to help teams ship faster in short, to provide a collaborative application development platform. >>Everything a team needs to build. Sharon run create applications. Now, as I noted earlier, it's been a challenging year for everyone on our planet and has been similar for us here at Docker. Our team had to adapt to working from home local lockdowns caused by the pandemic and other challenges. And despite all this together with our community and ecosystem partners, we accomplished many exciting milestones. For example, in open source together with the community and our partners, we open sourced or made major contributions to many projects, including OCI distribution and the composed plugins building on these open source projects. We had powerful new capabilities to the Docker product, both free and subscription. For example, support for WSL two and apple, Silicon and Docker, desktop and vulnerability scanning audit logs and image management and Docker hub. >>And finally delivering an easy to use well-integrated development experience with best of breed tools and content is only possible through close collaboration with our ecosystem partners. For example, this last year we had over 100 commercialized fees, join our Docker verified publisher program and over 200 open source projects, join our Docker sponsored open source program. As a result of these efforts, we've seen some exciting growth in the Docker community in the 12 months since last year's Docker con for example, the number of registered developers grew 80% to over 8 million. These developers created many new images increasing the total by 56% to almost 11 million. And the images in all these repositories were pulled by more than 13 million monthly active IP addresses totaling 13 billion pulls a month. Now while the growth is exciting by Docker, we're even more excited about the stories we hear from you and your development teams about how you're using Docker and its impact on your businesses. For example, cancer researchers and their bioinformatics development team at the Washington university school of medicine needed a way to quickly analyze their clinical trial results and then share the models, the data and the analysis with other researchers they use Docker because it gives them the ease of use choice of pipeline tools and speed of sharing so critical to their research. And most importantly to the lives of their patients stay tuned for another powerful customer story later in the keynote from Matt fall, VP of engineering at Oracle insights. >>So with this last year behind us, what's next for Docker, but challenge you this last year of force changes in how development teams work, but we felt for years to come. And what we've learned in our discussions with you will have long lasting impact on our product roadmap. One of the biggest takeaways from those discussions that you and your development team want to be quicker to adapt, to changes in your environment so you can ship faster. So what is DACA doing to help with this first trusted content to own the teams that can focus their energies on what is unique to their businesses and spend as little time as possible on undifferentiated work are able to adapt more quickly and ship faster in order to do so. They need to be able to trust other components that make up their app together with our partners. >>Docker is doubling down and providing development teams with trusted content and the tools they need to use it in their applications. Second, remote collaboration on a development team, asking a coworker to take a look at your code used to be as easy as swiveling their chair around, but given what's happened in the last year, that's no longer the case. So as you even been hinted in the demo at the beginning, you'll see us deliver more capabilities for remote collaboration within a development team. And we're enabling development team to quickly adapt to any team configuration all on prem hybrid, all work from home, helping them remain productive and focused on shipping third ecosystem integrations, those development teams that can quickly take advantage of innovations throughout the ecosystem. Instead of getting locked into a single monolithic pipeline, there'll be the ones able to deliver amps, which impact their businesses faster. >>So together with our ecosystem partners, we are investing in more integrations with best of breed tools, right? Integrated automated app pipelines. Furthermore, we'll be writing more public API APIs and SDKs to enable ecosystem partners and development teams to roll their own integrations. We'll be sharing more details about remote collaboration and ecosystem integrations. Later in the keynote, I'd like to take a moment to share with Docker and our partners are doing for trusted content, providing development teams, access to content. They can trust, allows them to focus their coding efforts on what's unique and differentiated to that end Docker and our partners are bringing more and more trusted content to Docker hub Docker official images are 160 images of popular upstream open source projects that serve as foundational building blocks for any application. These include operating systems, programming, languages, databases, and more. Furthermore, these are updated patch scan and certified frequently. So I said, no image is older than 30 days. >>Docker verified publisher images are published by more than 100 commercialized feeds. The image Rebos are explicitly designated verify. So the developers searching for components for their app know that the ISV is actively maintaining the image. Docker sponsored open source projects announced late last year features images for more than 200 open source communities. Docker sponsors these communities through providing free storage and networking resources and offering their community members unrestricted access repos for businesses allow businesses to update and share their apps privately within their organizations using role-based access control and user authentication. No, and finally, public repos for communities enable community projects to be freely shared with anonymous and authenticated users alike. >>And for all these different types of content, we provide services for both development teams and ISP, for example, vulnerability scanning and digital signing for enhanced security search and filtering for discoverability packaging and updating services and analytics about how these products are being used. All this trusted content, we make available to develop teams for them directly to discover poll and integrate into their applications. Our goal is to meet development teams where they live. So for those organizations that prefer to manage their internal distribution of trusted content, we've collaborated with leading container registry partners. We announced our partnership with J frog late last year. And today we're very pleased to announce our partnerships with Amazon and Miranda's for providing an integrated seamless experience for joint for our joint customers. Lastly, the container images themselves and this end to end flow are built on open industry standards, which provided all the teams with flexibility and choice trusted content enables development teams to rapidly build. >>As I let them focus on their unique differentiated features and use trusted building blocks for the rest. We'll be talking more about trusted content as well as remote collaboration and ecosystem integrations later in the keynote. Now ecosystem partners are not only integral to the Docker experience for development teams. They're also integral to a great DockerCon experience, but please join me in thanking our Dr. Kent on sponsors and checking out their talks throughout the day. And my job is to enable this rich interconnected community of builders and makers to build even more and hopefully have a great time doing it in order to enable the best platform for developers, which I know is something we are all passionate about. We need to partner across the ecosystem to ensure that developers can have a great experience across get hub and all the tools that they want to use. No matter what they are. My team works to build the tools and relationships to make that possible. I am so excited to join Scott on this virtual stage to talk about increasing developer velocity. So let's dive in now, I know this may be hard for some of you to believe, but as a former CIS admin, some 21 years ago, working on sense spark workstations, we've come such a long way for random scripts and desperate systems that we've stitched together to this whole inclusive developer workflow experience being a CIS admin. >>Then you were just one piece of the siloed experience, but I didn't want to just push code to production. So I created scripts that did it for me. I taught myself how to code. I was the model lazy CIS admin that got dangerous and having pushed a little too far. I realized that working in production and building features is really a team sport that we had the opportunity, all of us to be customer obsessed today. As developers, we can go beyond the traditional dev ops mindset. We can really focus on adding value to the customer experience by ensuring that we have work that contributes to increasing uptime via and SLS all while being agile and productive. We get there. When we move from a pass the Baton system to now having an interconnected developer workflow that increases velocity in every part of the cycle, we get to work better and smarter. >>And honestly, in a way that is so much more enjoyable because we automate away all the mundane and manual and boring tasks. So we get to focus on what really matters shipping, the things that humans get to use and love. Docker has been a big part of enabling this transformation. 10, 20 years ago, we had Tomcat containers, which are not Docker containers. And for y'all hearing this the first time go Google it. But that was the way we built our applications. We had to segment them on the server and give them resources. Today. We have Docker containers, these little mini Oasys and Docker images. You can do it multiple times in an orchestrated manner with the power of actions enabled and Docker. It's just so incredible what you can do. And by the way, I'm showing you actions in Docker, which I hope you use because both are great and free for open source. >>But the key takeaway is really the workflow and the automation, which you certainly can do with other tools. Okay, I'm going to show you just how easy this is, because believe me, if this is something I can learn and do anybody out there can, and in this demo, I'll show you about the basic components needed to create and use a package, Docker container actions. And like I said, you won't believe how awesome the combination of Docker and actions is because you can enable your workflow to do no matter what you're trying to do in this super baby example. We're so small. You could take like 10 seconds. Like I am here creating an action due to a simple task, like pushing a message to your logs. And the cool thing is you can use it on any the bit on this one. Like I said, we're going to use push. >>You can do, uh, even to order a pizza every time you roll into production, if you wanted, but at get hub, that'd be a lot of pizzas. And the funny thing is somebody out there is actually tried this and written that action. If you haven't used Docker and actions together, check out the docs on either get hub or Docker to get you started. And a huge shout out to all those doc writers out there. I built this demo today using those instructions. And if I can do it, I know you can too, but enough yapping let's get started to save some time. And since a lot of us are Docker and get hub nerds, I've already created a repo with a Docker file. So we're going to skip that step. Next. I'm going to create an action's Yammel file. And if you don't Yammer, you know, actions, the metadata defines my important log stuff to capture and the input and my time out per parameter to pass and puts to the Docker container, get up a build image from your Docker file and run the commands in a new container. >>Using the Sigma image. The cool thing is, is you can use any Docker image in any language for your actions. It doesn't matter if it's go or whatever in today's I'm going to use a shell script and an input variable to print my important log stuff to file. And like I said, you know me, I love me some. So let's see this action in a workflow. When an action is in a private repo, like the one I demonstrating today, the action can only be used in workflows in the same repository, but public actions can be used by workflows in any repository. So unfortunately you won't get access to the super awesome action, but don't worry in the Guild marketplace, there are over 8,000 actions available, especially the most important one, that pizza action. So go try it out. Now you can do this in a couple of ways, whether you're doing it in your preferred ID or for today's demo, I'm just going to use the gooey. I'm going to navigate to my actions tab as I've done here. And I'm going to in my workflow, select new work, hello, probably load some workflows to Claire to get you started, but I'm using the one I've copied. Like I said, the lazy developer I am in. I'm going to replace it with my action. >>That's it. So now we're going to go and we're going to start our commitment new file. Now, if we go over to our actions tab, we can see the workflow in progress in my repository. I just click the actions tab. And because they wrote the actions on push, we can watch the visualization under jobs and click the job to see the important stuff we're logging in the input stamp in the printed log. And we'll just wait for this to run. Hello, Mona and boom. Just like that. It runs automatically within our action. We told it to go run as soon as the files updated because we're doing it on push merge. That's right. Folks in just a few minutes, I built an action that writes an entry to a log file every time I push. So I don't have to do it manually. In essence, with automation, you can be kind to your future self and save time and effort to focus on what really matters. >>Imagine what I could do with even a little more time, probably order all y'all pieces. That is the power of the interconnected workflow. And it's amazing. And I hope you all go try it out, but why do we care about all of that? Just like in the demo, I took a manual task with both tape, which both takes time and it's easy to forget and automated it. So I don't have to think about it. And it's executed every time consistently. That means less time for me to worry about my human errors and mistakes, and more time to focus on actually building the cool stuff that people want. Obviously, automation, developer productivity, but what is even more important to me is the developer happiness tools like BS, code actions, Docker, Heroku, and many others reduce manual work, which allows us to focus on building things that are awesome. >>And to get into that wonderful state that we call flow. According to research by UC Irvine in Humboldt university in Germany, it takes an average of 23 minutes to enter optimal creative state. What we call the flow or to reenter it after distraction like your dog on your office store. So staying in flow is so critical to developer productivity and as a developer, it just feels good to be cranking away at something with deep focus. I certainly know that I love that feeling intuitive collaboration and automation features we built in to get hub help developer, Sam flow, allowing you and your team to do so much more, to bring the benefits of automation into perspective in our annual October's report by Dr. Nicole, Forsgren. One of my buddies here at get hub, took a look at the developer productivity in the stork year. You know what we found? >>We found that public GitHub repositories that use the Automational pull requests, merge those pull requests. 1.2 times faster. And the number of pooled merged pull requests increased by 1.3 times, that is 34% more poor requests merged. And other words, automation can con can dramatically increase, but the speed and quantity of work completed in any role, just like an open source development, you'll work more efficiently with greater impact when you invest the bulk of your time in the work that adds the most value and eliminate or outsource the rest because you don't need to do it, make the machines by elaborate by leveraging automation in their workflows teams, minimize manual work and reclaim that time for innovation and maintain that state of flow with development and collaboration. More importantly, their work is more enjoyable because they're not wasting the time doing the things that the machines or robots can do for them. >>And I remember what I said at the beginning. Many of us want to be efficient, heck even lazy. So why would I spend my time doing something I can automate? Speaking of the open source ecosystem we at get hub are so honored to be the home of more than 65 million developers who build software together for everywhere across the globe. Today, we're seeing software development taking shape as the world's largest team sport, where development teams collaborate, build and ship products. It's no longer a solo effort like it was for me. You don't have to take my word for it. Check out this globe. This globe shows real data. Every speck of light you see here represents a contribution to an open source project, somewhere on earth. >>These arts reach across continents, cultures, and other divides. It's distributed collaboration at its finest. 20 years ago, we had no concept of dev ops, SecOps and lots, or the new ops that are going to be happening. But today's development and ops teams are connected like ever before. This is only going to continue to evolve at a rapid pace, especially as we continue to empower the next hundred million developers, automation helps us focus on what's important and to greatly accelerate innovation. Just this past year, we saw some of the most groundbreaking technological advancements and achievements I'll say ever, including critical COVID-19 vaccine trials, as well as the first power flight on Mars. This past month, these breakthroughs were only possible because of the interconnected collaborative open source communities on get hub and the amazing tools and workflows that empower us all to create and innovate. Let's continue building, integrating, and automating. So we collectively can give developers the experience. They deserve all of the automation and beautiful eye UIs that we can muster so they can continue to build the things that truly do change the world. Talking to developers, their world is getting much more complex. Developers are being asked to do everything security ops on goal data analysis, all being put on the rockers. Software's eating the world. Of course, and this all make sense in that view, but they need help. One team. I told you it's shifted all our.net apps to run on Linux from windows, but their developers found the complexity of Docker files based on the Linux shell scripts really difficult has helped make these things easier for your teams. Your ones collaborate more in a virtual world, but you've asked us to make this simpler and more lightweight. You, the developers have asked for a paved road experience. You want things to just work with a simple options to be there, but it's not just the paved road. You also want to be able to go off-road and do interesting and different things. >>Use different components, experiments, innovate as well. We'll always offer you both those choices at different times. Different developers want different things. It may shift for ones the other paved road or off road. Sometimes you want reliability, dependability in the zone for day to day work, but sometimes you have to do something new, incorporate new things in your pipeline, build applications for new places. Then you knew those off-road abilities too. So you can really get under the hood and go and build something weird and wonderful and amazing. That gives you new options. Talk as an independent choice. We don't own the roads. We're not pushing you into any technology choices because we own them. We're really supporting and driving open standards, such as ISEI working opensource with the CNCF. We want to help you get your applications from your laptops, the clouds, and beyond, even into space. >>Let's talk about the key focus areas, that frame, what DACA is doing going forward. These are simplicity, sharing, flexibility, trusted content and care supply chain compared to building where the underlying kernel primitives like namespaces and Seagraves the original Docker CLI was just amazing Docker engine. It's a magical experience for everyone. It really brought those innovations and put them in a world where anyone would use that, but that's not enough. We need to continue to innovate. And it was trying to get more done faster all the time. And there's a lot more we can do. We're here to take complexity away from deeply complicated underlying things and give developers tools that are just amazing and magical. One of the area we haven't done enough and make things magical enough that we're really planning around now is that, you know, Docker images, uh, they're the key parts of your application, but you know, how do I do something with an image? How do I, where do I attach volumes with this image? What's the API. Whereas the SDK for this image, how do I find an example or docs in an API driven world? Every bit of software should have an API and an API description. And our vision is that every container should have this API description and the ability for you to understand how to use it. And it's all a seamless thing from, you know, from your code to the cloud local and remote, you can, you can use containers in this amazing and exciting way. >>One thing I really noticed in the last year is that companies that started off remote fast have constant collaboration. They have zoom calls, apron all day terminals, shattering that always working together. Other teams are really trying to learn how to do this style because they didn't start like that. We used to walk around to other people's desks or share services on the local office network. And it's very difficult to do that anymore. You want sharing to be really simple, lightweight, and informal. Let me try your container or just maybe let's collaborate on this together. Um, you know, fast collaboration on the analysts, fast iteration, fast working together, and he wants to share more. You want to share how to develop environments, not just an image. And we all work by seeing something someone else in our team is doing saying, how can I do that too? I can, I want to make that sharing really, really easy. Ben's going to talk about this more in the interest of one minute. >>We know how you're excited by apple. Silicon and gravis are not excited because there's a new architecture, but excited because it's faster, cooler, cheaper, better, and offers new possibilities. The M one support was the most asked for thing on our public roadmap, EFA, and we listened and share that we see really exciting possibilities, usership arm applications, all the way from desktop to production. We know that you all use different clouds and different bases have deployed to, um, you know, we work with AWS and Azure and Google and more, um, and we want to help you ship on prime as well. And we know that you use huge number of languages and the containers help build applications that use different languages for different parts of the application or for different applications, right? You can choose the best tool. You have JavaScript hat or everywhere go. And re-ask Python for data and ML, perhaps getting excited about WebAssembly after hearing about a cube con, you know, there's all sorts of things. >>So we need to make that as easier. We've been running the whole month of Python on the blog, and we're doing a month of JavaScript because we had one specific support about how do I best put this language into production of that language into production. That detail is important for you. GPS have been difficult to use. We've added GPS suppose in desktop for windows, but we know there's a lot more to do to make the, how multi architecture, multi hardware, multi accelerator world work better and also securely. Um, so there's a lot more work to do to support you in all these things you want to do. >>How do we start building a tenor has applications, but it turns out we're using existing images as components. I couldn't assist survey earlier this year, almost half of container image usage was public images rather than private images. And this is growing rapidly. Almost all software has open source components and maybe 85% of the average application is open source code. And what you're doing is taking whole container images as modules in your application. And this was always the model with Docker compose. And it's a model that you're already et cetera, writing you trust Docker, official images. We know that they might go to 25% of poles on Docker hub and Docker hub provides you the widest choice and the best support that trusted content. We're talking to people about how to make this more helpful. We know, for example, that winter 69 four is just showing us as support, but the image doesn't yet tell you that we're working with canonical to improve messaging from specific images about left lifecycle and support. >>We know that you need more images, regularly updated free of vulnerabilities, easy to use and discover, and Donnie and Marie neuro, going to talk about that more this last year, the solar winds attack has been in the, in the news. A lot, the software you're using and trusting could be compromised and might be all over your organization. We need to reduce the risk of using vital open-source components. We're seeing more software supply chain attacks being targeted as the supply chain, because it's often an easier place to attack and production software. We need to be able to use this external code safely. We need to, everyone needs to start from trusted sources like photography images. They need to scan for known vulnerabilities using Docker scan that we built in partnership with sneak and lost DockerCon last year, we need just keep updating base images and dependencies, and we'll, we're going to help you have the control and understanding about your images that you need to do this. >>And there's more, we're also working on the nursery V2 project in the CNCF to revamp container signings, or you can tell way or software comes from we're working on tooling to make updates easier, and to help you understand and manage all the principals carrier you're using security is a growing concern for all of us. It's really important. And we're going to help you work with security. We can't achieve all our dreams, whether that's space travel or amazing developer products ever see without deep partnerships with our community to cloud is RA and the cloud providers aware most of you ship your occasion production and simple routes that take your work and deploy it easily. Reliably and securely are really important. Just get into production simply and easily and securely. And we've done a bunch of work on that. And, um, but we know there's more to do. >>The CNCF on the open source cloud native community are an amazing ecosystem of creators and lovely people creating an amazing strong community and supporting a huge amount of innovation has its roots in the container ecosystem and his dreams beyond that much of the innovation is focused around operate experience so far, but developer experience is really a growing concern in that community as well. And we're really excited to work on that. We also uses appraiser tool. Then we know you do, and we know that you want it to be easier to use in your environment. We just shifted Docker hub to work on, um, Kubernetes fully. And, um, we're also using many of the other projects are Argo from atheists. We're spending a lot of time working with Microsoft, Amazon right now on getting natural UV to ready to ship in the next few. That's a really detailed piece of collaboration we've been working on for a long term. Long time is really important for our community as the scarcity of the container containers and, um, getting content for you, working together makes us stronger. Our community is made up of all of you have. Um, it's always amazing to be reminded of that as a huge open source community that we already proud to work with. It's an amazing amount of innovation that you're all creating and where perhaps it, what with you and share with you as well. Thank you very much. And thank you for being here. >>Really excited to talk to you today and share more about what Docker is doing to help make you faster, make your team faster and turn your application delivery into something that makes you a 10 X team. What we're hearing from you, the developers using Docker everyday fits across three common themes that we hear consistently over and over. We hear that your time is super important. It's critical, and you want to move faster. You want your tools to get out of your way, and instead to enable you to accelerate and focus on the things you want to be doing. And part of that is that finding great content, great application components that you can incorporate into your apps to move faster is really hard. It's hard to discover. It's hard to find high quality content that you can trust that, you know, passes your test and your configuration needs. >>And it's hard to create good content as well. And you're looking for more safety, more guardrails to help guide you along that way so that you can focus on creating value for your company. Secondly, you're telling us that it's a really far to collaborate effectively with your team and you want to do more, to work more effectively together to help your tools become more and more seamless to help you stay in sync, both with yourself across all of your development environments, as well as with your teammates so that you can more effectively collaborate together. Review each other's work, maintain things and keep them in sync. And finally, you want your applications to run consistently in every single environment, whether that's your local development environment, a cloud-based development environment, your CGI pipeline, or the cloud for production, and you want that micro service to provide that consistent experience everywhere you go so that you have similar tools, similar environments, and you don't need to worry about things getting in your way, but instead things make it easy for you to focus on what you wanna do and what Docker is doing to help solve all of these problems for you and your colleagues is creating a collaborative app dev platform. >>And this collaborative application development platform consists of multiple different pieces. I'm not going to walk through all of them today, but the overall view is that we're providing all the tooling you need from the development environment, to the container images, to the collaboration services, to the pipelines and integrations that enable you to focus on making your applications amazing and changing the world. If we start zooming on a one of those aspects, collaboration we hear from developers regularly is that they're challenged in synchronizing their own setups across environments. They want to be able to duplicate the setup of their teammates. Look, then they can easily get up and running with the same applications, the same tooling, the same version of the same libraries, the same frameworks. And they want to know if their applications are good before they're ready to share them in an official space. >>They want to collaborate on things before they're done, rather than feeling like they have to officially published something before they can effectively share it with others to work on it, to solve this. We're thrilled today to announce Docker, dev environments, Docker, dev environments, transform how your team collaborates. They make creating, sharing standardized development environments. As simple as a Docker poll, they make it easy to review your colleagues work without affecting your own work. And they increase the reproducibility of your own work and decreased production issues in doing so because you've got consistent environments all the way through. Now, I'm going to pass it off to our principal product manager, Ben Gotch to walk you through more detail on Docker dev environments. >>Hi, I'm Ben. I work as a principal program manager at DACA. One of the areas that doc has been looking at to see what's hard today for developers is sharing changes that you make from the inner loop where the inner loop is a better development, where you write code, test it, build it, run it, and ultimately get feedback on those changes before you merge them and try and actually ship them out to production. Most amount of us build this flow and get there still leaves a lot of challenges. People need to jump between branches to look at each other's work. Independence. Dependencies can be different when you're doing that and doing this in this new hybrid wall of work. Isn't any easier either the ability to just save someone, Hey, come and check this out. It's become much harder. People can't come and sit down at your desk or take your laptop away for 10 minutes to just grab and look at what you're doing. >>A lot of the reason that development is hard when you're remote, is that looking at changes and what's going on requires more than just code requires all the dependencies and everything you've got set up and that complete context of your development environment, to understand what you're doing and solving this in a remote first world is hard. We wanted to look at how we could make this better. Let's do that in a way that let you keep working the way you do today. Didn't want you to have to use a browser. We didn't want you to have to use a new idea. And we wanted to do this in a way that was application centric. We wanted to let you work with all the rest of the application already using C for all the services and all those dependencies you need as part of that. And with that, we're excited to talk more about docket developer environments, dev environments are new part of the Docker experience that makes it easier you to get started with your whole inner leap, working inside a container, then able to share and collaborate more than just the code. >>We want it to enable you to share your whole modern development environment, your whole setup from DACA, with your team on any operating system, we'll be launching a limited beta of dev environments in the coming month. And a GA dev environments will be ID agnostic and supporting composts. This means you'll be able to use an extend your existing composed files to create your own development environment in whatever idea, working in dev environments designed to be local. First, they work with Docker desktop and say your existing ID, and let you share that whole inner loop, that whole development context, all of your teammates in just one collect. This means if you want to get feedback on the working progress change or the PR it's as simple as opening another idea instance, and looking at what your team is working on because we're using compose. You can just extend your existing oppose file when you're already working with, to actually create this whole application and have it all working in the context of the rest of the services. >>So it's actually the whole environment you're working with module one service that doesn't really understand what it's doing alone. And with that, let's jump into a quick demo. So you can see here, two dev environments up and running. First one here is the same container dev environment. So if I want to go into that, let's see what's going on in the various code button here. If that one open, I can get straight into my application to start making changes inside that dev container. And I've got all my dependencies in here, so I can just run that straight in that second application I have here is one that's opened up in compose, and I can see that I've also got my backend, my front end and my database. So I've got all my services running here. So if I want, I can open one or more of these in a dev environment, meaning that that container has the context that dev environment has the context of the whole application. >>So I can get back into and connect to all the other services that I need to test this application properly, all of them, one unit. And then when I've made my changes and I'm ready to share, I can hit my share button type in the refund them on to share that too. And then give that image to someone to get going, pick that up and just start working with that code and all my dependencies, simple as putting an image, looking ahead, we're going to be expanding development environments, more of your dependencies for the whole developer worst space. We want to look at backing up and letting you share your volumes to make data science and database setups more repeatable and going. I'm still all of this under a single workspace for your team containing images, your dev environments, your volumes, and more we've really want to allow you to create a fully portable Linux development environment. >>So everyone you're working with on any operating system, as I said, our MVP we're coming next month. And that was for vs code using their dev container primitive and more support for other ideas. We'll follow to find out more about what's happening and what's coming up next in the future of this. And to actually get a bit of a deeper dive in the experience. Can we check out the talk I'm doing with Georgie and girl later on today? Now I'd like to talk more about applications while the dev environment is like the workbench around what you're building. The application itself has all the different components, libraries, and frameworks, and other code that make up the application itself. And we hear developers saying all the time things like, how do they know if their images are good? >>How do they know if they're secure? How do they know if they're minimal? How do they make great images and great Docker files and how do they keep their images secure? And up-to-date on every one of those ties into how do I create more trust? How do I know that I'm building high quality applications to enable you to do this even more effectively than today? We are pleased to announce the DACA verified polisher program. This broadens trusted content by extending beyond Docker official images, to give you more and more trusted building blocks that you can incorporate into your applications. It gives you confidence that you're getting what you expect because Docker verifies every single one of these publishers to make sure they are who they say they are. This improves our secure supply chain story. And finally it simplifies your discovery of the best building blocks by making it easy for you to find things that you know, you can trust so that you can incorporate them into your applications and move on and on the right. You can see some examples of the publishers that are involved in Docker, official images and our Docker verified publisher program. Now I'm pleased to introduce you to marina. Kubicki our senior product manager who will walk you through more about what we're doing to create a better experience for you around trust. >>Thank you, Dani, >>Mario Andretti, who is a famous Italian sports car driver. One said that if everything feels under control, you're just not driving. You're not driving fast enough. Maya Andretti is not a software developer and a software developers. We know that no matter how fast we need to go in order to drive the innovation that we're working on, we can never allow our applications to spin out of control and a Docker. As we continue talking to our, to the developers, what we're realizing is that in order to reach that speed, the developers are the, the, the development community is looking for the building blocks and the tools that will, they will enable them to drive at the speed that they need to go and have the trust in those building blocks. And in those tools that they will be able to maintain control over their applications. So as we think about some of the things that we can do to, to address those concerns, uh, we're realizing that we can pursue them in a number of different venues, including creating reliable content, including creating partnerships that expands the options for the reliable content. >>Um, in order to, in a we're looking at creating integrations, no link security tools, talk about the reliable content. The first thing that comes to mind are the Docker official images, which is a program that we launched several years ago. And this is a set of curated, actively maintained, open source images that, uh, include, uh, operating systems and databases and programming languages. And it would become immensely popular for, for, for creating the base layers of, of the images of, of the different images, images, and applications. And would we realizing that, uh, many developers are, instead of creating something from scratch, basically start with one of the official images for their basis, and then build on top of that. And this program has become so popular that it now makes up a quarter of all of the, uh, Docker poles, which essentially ends up being several billion pulse every single month. >>As we look beyond what we can do for the open source. Uh, we're very ability on the open source, uh, spectrum. We are very excited to announce that we're launching the Docker verified publishers program, which is continuing providing the trust around the content, but now working with, uh, some of the industry leaders, uh, in multiple, in multiple verticals across the entire technology technical spec, it costs entire, uh, high tech in order to provide you with more options of the images that you can use for building your applications. And it still comes back to trust that when you are searching for content in Docker hub, and you see the verified publisher badge, you know, that this is, this is the content that, that is part of the, that comes from one of our partners. And you're not running the risk of pulling the malicious image from an employee master source. >>As we look beyond what we can do for, for providing the reliable content, we're also looking at some of the tools and the infrastructure that we can do, uh, to create a security around the content that you're creating. So last year at the last ad, the last year's DockerCon, we announced partnership with sneak. And later on last year, we launched our DACA, desktop and Docker hub vulnerability scans that allow you the options of writing scans in them along multiple points in your dev cycle. And in addition to providing you with information on the vulnerability on, on the vulnerabilities, in, in your code, uh, it also provides you with a guidance on how to re remediate those vulnerabilities. But as we look beyond the vulnerability scans, we're also looking at some of the other things that we can do, you know, to, to, to, uh, further ensure that the integrity and the security around your images, your images, and with that, uh, later on this year, we're looking to, uh, launch the scope, personal access tokens, and instead of talking about them, I will simply show you what they look like. >>So if you can see here, this is my page in Docker hub, where I've created a four, uh, tokens, uh, read-write delete, read, write, read only in public read in public creeper read only. So, uh, earlier today I went in and I, I logged in, uh, with my read only token. And when you see, when I'm going to pull an image, it's going to allow me to pull an image, not a problem success. And then when I do the next step, I'm going to ask to push an image into the same repo. Uh, would you see is that it's going to give me an error message saying that they access is denied, uh, because there is an additional authentication required. So these are the things that we're looking to add to our roadmap. As we continue thinking about the things that we can do to provide, um, to provide additional building blocks, content, building blocks, uh, and, and, and tools to build the trust so that our DACA developer and skinned code faster than Mario Andretti could ever imagine. It's amazing what you can do to improve the trusted content so that you can accelerate your development more and move more quickly, move more collaboratively and build upon the great work of others. Finally, we hear over and over as that developers are working on their applications that they're looking for, environments that are consistent, that are the same as production, and that they want their applications to really run anywhere, any environment, any architecture, any cloud one great example is the recent announcement of apple Silicon. We heard from developers on uproar that they needed Docker to be available for that architecture before they could add those to it and be successful. And we listened. And based on that, we are pleased to share with you Docker, desktop on apple Silicon. This enables you to run your apps consistently anywhere, whether that's developing on your team's latest dev hardware, deploying an ARM-based cloud environments and having a consistent architecture across your development and production or using multi-year architecture support, which enables your whole team to collaborate on its application, using private repositories on Docker hub, and thrilled to introduce you to Hughie cower, senior director for product management, who will walk you through more of what we're doing to create a great developer experience. >>Senior director of product management at Docker. And I'd like to jump straight into a demo. This is the Mac mini with the apple Silicon processor. And I want to show you how you can now do an end-to-end arm workflow from my M one Mac mini to raspberry PI. As you can see, we have vs code and Docker desktop installed on a, my, the Mac mini. I have a small example here, and I have a raspberry PI three with an led strip, and I want to turn those LEDs into a moving rainbow. This Dockerfile here, builds the application. We build the image with the Docker, build X command to make the image compatible for all raspberry pies with the arm. 64. Part of this build is built with the native power of the M one chip. I also add the push option to easily share the image with my team so they can give it a try to now Dr. >>Creates the local image with the application and uploads it to Docker hub after we've built and pushed the image. We can go to Docker hub and see the new image on Docker hub. You can also explore a variety of images that are compatible with arm processors. Now let's go to the raspberry PI. I have Docker already installed and it's running Ubuntu 64 bit with the Docker run command. I can run the application and let's see what will happen from there. You can see Docker is downloading the image automatically from Docker hub and when it's running, if it's works right, there are some nice colors. And with that, if we have an end-to-end workflow for arm, where continuing to invest into providing you a great developer experience, that's easy to install. Easy to get started with. As you saw in the demo, if you're interested in the new Mac, mini are interested in developing for our platforms in general, we've got you covered with the same experience you've come to expect from Docker with over 95,000 arm images on hub, including many Docker official images. >>We think you'll find what you're looking for. Thank you again to the community that helped us to test the tech previews. We're so delighted to hear when folks say that the new Docker desktop for apple Silicon, it just works for them, but that's not all we've been working on. As Dani mentioned, consistency of developer experience across environments is so important. We're introducing composed V2 that makes compose a first-class citizen in the Docker CLI you no longer need to install a separate composed biter in order to use composed, deploying to production is simpler than ever with the new compose integration that enables you to deploy directly to Amazon ECS or Azure ACI with the same methods you use to run your application locally. We're going to be optimizing your update experience to make sure that you can easily understand the current state of your application, all its components and keep them all current without worrying about breaking everything as you're doing. So we're going to make it easier for you to synchronize your work. Using cloud sync features. We're going to improve collaboration through dev environments and beyond, and we're going to do make it easy for you to run your microservice in your environments without worrying about things like architecture or differences between those environments. And now you're going to be hearing from one of our customers about what they're doing to launch their business with Docker >>I'm Matt Falk, I'm the head of engineering and orbital insight. And today I want to talk to you a little bit about data from space. So who am I like many of you, I'm a software developer and a software developer about seven companies so far, and now I'm a head of engineering. So I spend most of my time doing meetings, but occasionally I'll still spend time doing design discussions, doing code reviews. And in my free time, I still like to dabble on things like project oiler. So who's Oberlin site. What do we do? Portal insight is a large data supplier and analytics provider where we take data geospatial data anywhere on the planet, any overhead sensor, and translate that into insights for the end customer. So specifically we have a suite of high performance, artificial intelligence and machine learning analytics that run on this geospatial data. >>And we build them to specifically determine natural and human service level activity anywhere on the planet. What that really means is we take any type of data associated with a latitude and longitude and we identify patterns so that we can, so we can detect anomalies. And that's everything that we do is all about identifying those patterns to detect anomalies. So more specifically, what type of problems do we solve? So supply chain intelligence, this is one of the use cases that we we'd like to talk about a lot. It's one of our main primary verticals that we go after right now. And as Scott mentioned earlier, this had a huge impact last year when COVID hit. So specifically supply chain intelligence is all about identifying movement patterns to and from operating facilities to identify changes in those supply chains. How do we do this? So for us, we can do things where we track the movement of trucks. >>So identifying trucks, moving from one location to another in aggregate, same thing we can do with foot traffic. We can do the same thing for looking at aggregate groups of people moving from one location to another and analyzing their patterns of life. We can look at two different locations to determine how people are moving from one location to another, or going back and forth. All of this is extremely valuable for detecting how a supply chain operates and then identifying the changes to that supply chain. As I said last year with COVID, everything changed in particular supply chains changed incredibly, and it was hugely important for customers to know where their goods or their products are coming from and where they were going, where there were disruptions in their supply chain and how that's affecting their overall supply and demand. So to use our platform, our suite of tools, you can start to gain a much better picture of where your suppliers or your distributors are going from coming from or going to. >>So what's our team look like? So my team is currently about 50 engineers. Um, we're spread into four different teams and the teams are structured like this. So the first team that we have is infrastructure engineering and this team largely deals with deploying our Dockers using Kubernetes. So this team is all about taking Dockers, built by other teams, sometimes building the Dockers themselves and putting them into our production system, our platform engineering team, they produce these microservices. So they produce microservice, Docker images. They develop and test with them locally. Their entire environments are dockerized. They produce these doctors, hand them over to him for infrastructure engineering to be deployed. Similarly, our product engineering team does the same thing. They develop and test with Dr. Locally. They also produce a suite of Docker images that the infrastructure team can then deploy. And lastly, we have our R and D team, and this team specifically produces machine learning algorithms using Nvidia Docker collectively, we've actually built 381 Docker repositories and 14 million. >>We've had 14 million Docker pools over the lifetime of the company, just a few stats about us. Um, but what I'm really getting to here is you can see actually doctors becoming almost a form of communication between these teams. So one of the paradigms in software engineering that you're probably familiar with encapsulation, it's really helpful for a lot of software engineering problems to break the problem down, isolate the different pieces of it and start building interfaces between the code. This allows you to scale different pieces of the platform or different pieces of your code in different ways that allows you to scale up certain pieces and keep others at a smaller level so that you can meet customer demands. And for us, one of the things that we can largely do now is use Dockers as that interface. So instead of having an entire platform where all teams are talking to each other, and everything's kind of, mishmashed in a monolithic application, we can now say this team is only able to talk to this team by passing over a particular Docker image that defines the interface of what needs to be built before it passes to the team and really allows us to scalp our development and be much more efficient. >>Also, I'd like to say we are hiring. Um, so we have a number of open roles. We have about 30 open roles in our engineering team that we're looking to fill by the end of this year. So if any of this sounds really interesting to you, please reach out after the presentation. >>So what does our platform do? Really? Our platform allows you to answer any geospatial question, and we do this at three different inputs. So first off, where do you want to look? So we did this as what we call an AOI or an area of interest larger. You can think of this as a polygon drawn on the map. So we have a curated data set of almost 4 million AOIs, which you can go and you can search and use for your analysis, but you're also free to build your own. Second question is what you want to look for. We do this with the more interesting part of our platform of our machine learning and AI capabilities. So we have a suite of algorithms that automatically allow you to identify trucks, buildings, hundreds of different types of aircraft, different types of land use, how many people are moving from one location to another different locations that people in a particular area are moving to or coming from all of these different analyses or all these different analytics are available at the click of a button, and then determine what you want to look for. >>Lastly, you determine when you want to find what you're looking for. So that's just, uh, you know, do you want to look for the next three hours? Do you want to look for the last week? Do you want to look every month for the past two, whatever the time cadence is, you decide that you hit go and out pops a time series, and that time series tells you specifically where you want it to look what you want it to look for and how many, or what percentage of the thing you're looking for appears in that area. Again, we do all of this to work towards patterns. So we use all this data to produce a time series from there. We can look at it, determine the patterns, and then specifically identify the anomalies. As I mentioned with supply chain, this is extremely valuable to identify where things change. So we can answer these questions, looking at a particular operating facility, looking at particular, what is happening with the level of activity is at that operating facility where people are coming from, where they're going to, after visiting that particular facility and identify when and where that changes here, you can just see it's a picture of our platform. It's actually showing all the devices in Manhattan, um, over a period of time. And it's more of a heat map view. So you can actually see the hotspots in the area. >>So really the, and this is the heart of the talk, but what happened in 2020? So for men, you know, like many of you, 2020 was a difficult year COVID hit. And that changed a lot of what we're doing, not from an engineering perspective, but also from an entire company perspective for us, the motivation really became to make sure that we were lowering our costs and increasing innovation simultaneously. Now those two things often compete with each other. A lot of times you want to increase innovation, that's going to increase your costs, but the challenge last year was how to do both simultaneously. So here's a few stats for you from our team. In Q1 of last year, we were spending almost $600,000 per month on compute costs prior to COVID happening. That wasn't hugely a concern for us. It was a lot of money, but it wasn't as critical as it was last year when we really needed to be much more efficient. >>Second one is flexibility for us. We were deployed on a single cloud environment while we were cloud thought ready, and that was great. We want it to be more flexible. We want it to be on more cloud environments so that we could reach more customers. And also eventually get onto class side networks, extending the base of our customers as well from a custom analytics perspective. This is where we get into our traction. So last year, over the entire year, we computed 54,000 custom analytics for different users. We wanted to make sure that this number was steadily increasing despite us trying to lower our costs. So we didn't want the lowering cost to come as the sacrifice of our user base. Lastly, of particular percentage here that I'll say definitely needs to be improved is 75% of our projects never fail. So this is where we start to get into a bit of stability of our platform. >>Now I'm not saying that 25% of our projects fail the way we measure this is if you have a particular project or computation that runs every day and any one of those runs sale account, that is a failure because from an end-user perspective, that's an issue. So this is something that we know we needed to improve on and we needed to grow and make our platform more stable. I'm going to something that we really focused on last year. So where are we now? So now coming out of the COVID valley, we are starting to soar again. Um, we had, uh, back in April of last year, we had the entire engineering team. We actually paused all development for about four weeks. You had everyone focused on reducing our compute costs in the cloud. We got it down to 200 K over the period of a few months. >>And for the next 12 months, we hit that number every month. This is huge for us. This is extremely important. Like I said, in the COVID time period where costs and operating efficiency was everything. So for us to do that, that was a huge accomplishment last year and something we'll keep going forward. One thing I would actually like to really highlight here, two is what allowed us to do that. So first off, being in the cloud, being able to migrate things like that, that was one thing. And we were able to use there's different cloud services in a more particular, in a more efficient way. We had a very detailed tracking of how we were spending things. We increased our data retention policies. We optimized our processing. However, one additional piece was switching to new technologies on, in particular, we migrated to get lab CICB. >>Um, and this is something that the costs we use Docker was extremely, extremely easy. We didn't have to go build new new code containers or repositories or change our code in order to do this. We were simply able to migrate the containers over and start using a new CIC so much. In fact, that we were able to do that migration with three engineers in just two weeks from a cloud environment and flexibility standpoint, we're now operating in two different clouds. We were able to last night, I've over the last nine months to operate in the second cloud environment. And again, this is something that Docker helped with incredibly. Um, we didn't have to go and build all new interfaces to all new, different services or all different tools in the next cloud provider. All we had to do was build a base cloud infrastructure that ups agnostic the way, all the different details of the cloud provider. >>And then our doctors just worked. We can move them to another environment up and running, and our platform was ready to go from a traction perspective. We're about a third of the way through the year. At this point, we've already exceeded the amount of customer analytics we produce last year. And this is thanks to a ton more albums, that whole suite of new analytics that we've been able to build over the past 12 months and we'll continue to build going forward. So this is really, really great outcome for us because we were able to show that our costs are staying down, but our analytics and our customer traction, honestly, from a stability perspective, we improved from 75% to 86%, not quite yet 99 or three nines or four nines, but we are getting there. Um, and this is actually thanks to really containerizing and modularizing different pieces of our platform so that we could scale up in different areas. This allowed us to increase that stability. This piece of the code works over here, toxin an interface to the rest of the system. We can scale this piece up separately from the rest of the system, and that allows us much more easily identify issues in the system, fix those and then correct the system overall. So basically this is a summary of where we were last year, where we are now and how much more successful we are now because of the issues that we went through last year and largely brought on by COVID. >>But that this is just a screenshot of the, our, our solution actually working on supply chain. So this is in particular, it is showing traceability of a distribution warehouse in salt lake city. It's right in the center of the screen here. You can see the nice kind of orange red center. That's a distribution warehouse and all the lines outside of that, all the dots outside of that are showing where people are, where trucks are moving from that location. So this is really helpful for supply chain companies because they can start to identify where their suppliers are, are coming from or where their distributors are going to. Photonic Accelerators for Machine Intelligence


 

>>Hi, Maya. Mr England. And I am an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at M I T. It's been fantastic to be part of this team that Professor Yamamoto put together, uh, for the entity Fire program. It's a great pleasure to report to you are update from the first year I will talk to you today about our recent work in photonic accelerators for machine intelligence. You can already get a flavor of the kind of work that I'll be presenting from the photonic integrated circuit that services a platonic matrix processor that we are developing to try toe break some of the bottle next that we encounter in inference, machine learning tasks in particular tasks like vision, games control or language processing. This work is jointly led with Dr Ryan heavily, uh, scientists at NTT Research, and he will have a poster that you should check out. Uh, in this conference should also say that there are postdoc positions available. Um, just take a look at announcements on Q P lab at m i t dot eu. So if you look at these machine learning applications, look under the hood. You see that a common feature is that they used these artificial neural networks or a and ends where you have an input layer of, let's say, and neurons and values that is connected to the first layer of, let's Say, also and neurons and connecting the first to the second layer would, if you represented it biomatrix requiring and biomatrix that has of order and squared free parameters. >>Okay, now, in traditional machine learning inference, you would have to grab these n squared values from memory. And every time you do that, it costs quite a lot of energy. Maybe you can match, but it's still quite costly in energy, and moreover, each of the input values >>has to be multiplied by that matrix. And if you multiply an end by one vector by an end square matrix, you have to do a border and squared multiplication. Okay, now, on a digital computer, you therefore have to do a voter in secret operations and memory access, which could be quite costly. But the proposition is that on a photonic integrated circuits, perhaps we could do that matrix vector multiplication directly on the P. I C itself by encoding optical fields on sending them through a programmed program into parameter and the output them would be a product of the matrix multiplied by the input vector. And that is actually the experiment. We did, uh, demonstrating that That this is, you know, in principle, possible back in 2017 and a collaboration with Professor Marine Soldier Judge. Now, if we look a little bit more closely at the device is shown here, this consists of a silicon layer that is pattern into wave guides. We do this with foundry. This was fabricated with the opposite foundry, and many thanks to our collaborators who helped make that possible. And and this thing guides light, uh, on about of these wave guides to make these two by two transformations Maxine and the kilometers, as they called >>input to input wave guides coming in to input to output wave guides going out. And by having to phase settings here data and five, we can control any arbitrary, uh, s U two rotation. Now, if I wanna have any modes coming in and modes coming out that could be represented by an S u N unitary transformation, and that's what this kind of trip allows you to dio and That's the key ingredient that really launched us in in my group. I should at this point, acknowledge the people who have made this possible and in particular point out Leon Bernstein and Alex lots as well as, uh, Ryan heavily once more. Also, these other collaborators problems important immigrant soldier dish and, of course, to a funding in particular now three entity research funding. So why optics optics has failed many times before in building computers. But why is this different? And I think the difference is that we now you know, we're not trying to build an entirely new computer out of optics were selective in how we apply optics. We should use optics for what it's good at. And that's probably not so much from non linearity, unnecessarily I mean, not memory, um, communication and fan out great in optics. And as we just said, linear algebra, you can do in optics. Fantastic. Okay, so you should make use of these things and then combine it judiciously with electronic processing to see if you can get an advantage in the entire system out of it, okay. And eso before I move on. Actually, based on the 2017 paper, uh, to startups were created, like intelligence and like, matter and the two students from my group, Nick Harris. And they responded, uh, co started this this this jointly founded by matter. And just after, you know, after, like, about two years, they've been able to create their first, uh, device >>the first metrics. Large scale processor. This is this device has called Mars has 64 input mode. 64 Promodes and the full program ability under the hood. Okay. So because they're integrating wave guides directly with Seamus Electron ICS, they were able to get all the wiring complexity, dealt with all the feedback and so forth. And this device is now able to just process a 64 or 64 unitary majors on the sly. Okay, parameters are three wants total power consumption. Um, it has ah, late and see how long it takes for a matrix to be multiplied by a factor of less than a nanosecond. And because this device works well over a pretty large 20 gigahertz, you could put many channels that are individually at one big hurts, so you can have tens of S U two s u 65 or 64 rotations simultaneously that you could do the sort of back in the envelope. Physics gives you that per multiply accumulate. You have just tens of Tempted jewels. Attn. A moment. So that's very, very competitive. That's that's awesome. Okay, so you see, plan and potentially the breakthroughs that are enabled by photonics here And actually, more recently, they actually one thing that made it possible is very cool Eyes thes My face shifters actually have no hold power, whereas our face shifters studios double modulation. These use, uh, nano scale mechanical modulators that have no hold power. So once you program a unitary, you could just hold it there. No energy consumption added over >>time. So photonics really is on the rise in computing on demand. But once again, you have to be. You have to be careful in how you compare against a chance to find where is the game to be had. So what I've talked so far about is wait stationary photonic processing. Okay, up until here. Now what tronics has that also, but it doesn't have the benefits of the coherence of optical fields transitioning through this, uh, to this to this matrix nor the bandwidth. Okay, Eso So that's Ah, that is, I think a really exciting direction. And these companies are off and they're they're building these trips and we'll see the next couple of months how well this works. Uh, on the A different direction is to have an output stationary matrix vector multiplication. And for this I want to point to this paper we wrote with Ryan, Emily and the other team members that projects the activation functions together with the weight terms onto a detector array and by the interference of the activation function and the weight term by Hamad and >>Affection. It's possible if you think about Hamad and affection that it actually automatically produces the multiplication interference turn between two optical fields gives you the multiplication between them. And so that's what that is making use of. I wanna talk a little bit more about that approach. So we actually did a careful analysis in the P R X paper that was cited in the last >>page and that analysis of the energy consumption show that this device and principal, uh, can compute at at an energy poor multiply accumulate that is below what you could theoretically dio at room temperature using irreversible computer like like our digital computers that we use in everyday life. Um, so I want to illustrate that you can see that from this plot here, but this is showing. It's the number of neurons that you have per layer. And on the vertical axis is the energy per multiply accumulate in terms of jewels. And when we make use of the massive fan out together with this photo electric multiplication by career detection, we estimate that >>we're on this curve here. So the more right. So since our energy consumption scales us and whereas for a for a digital computer it skills and squared, we, um we gain mawr as you go to a larger matrices. So for largest matrices like matrices of >>scale 1,005,000, even with present day technology, we estimate that we would hit and energy per multiply accumulate of about a center draw. Okay, But if we look at if we imagine a photonic device that >>uses a photonic system that uses devices that have already been demonstrated individually but not packaged in large system, you know, individually in research papers, we would be on this curve here where you would very quickly dip underneath the lander, a limit which corresponds to the thermodynamic limit for doing as many bit operations that you would have to do to do the same depth of neural network as we do here. And I should say that all of these numbers were computed for this simulated >>optical neural network, um, for having the equivalent, our rate that a fully digital computer that a digital computer would have and eso equivalent in the error rate. So it's limited in the error by the model itself rather than the imperfections of the devices. Okay. And we benchmark that on the amnesty data set. So that was a theoretical work that looked at the scaling limits and show that there's great, great hope to to really gain tremendously in the energy per bit, but also in the overall latency and throughput. But you shouldn't celebrate too early. You have to really do a careful system level study comparing, uh, electronic approaches, which oftentimes happened analogous approach to the optical approaches. And we did that in the first major step in this digital optical neural network. Uh, study here, which was done together with the PNG who is an electron ICS designer who actually works on, uh, tronics based on c'mon specifically made for machine on an acceleration. And Professor Joel, member of M I t. Who is also a fellow at video And what we studied there in particular, is what if we just replaced on Lee the communication part with optics, Okay. And we looked at, you know, getting the same equivalent error rates that you would have with electronic computer. And that showed that that way should have a benefit for large neural networks, because large neural networks will require lots of communication that eventually do not fit on a single Elektronik trip anymore. At that point, you have to go longer distances, and that's where the optical connections start to win out. So for details, I would like to point to that system level study. But we're now applying more sophisticated studies like this, uh, like that simulate full system simulation to our other optical networks to really see where the benefits that we might have, where we can exploit thes now. Lastly, I want to just say What if we had known nominee Garrity's that >>were actually reversible. There were quantum coherent, in fact, and we looked at that. So supposed to have the same architectural layout. But rather than having like a sexual absorption absorption or photo detection and the electronic non linearity, which is what we've done so far, you have all optical non linearity, okay? Based, for example, on a curve medium. So suppose that we had, like, a strong enough current medium so that the output from one of these transformations can pass through it, get an intensity dependent face shift and then passes into the next layer. Okay, What we did in this case is we said okay. Suppose that you have this. You have multiple layers of these, Uh um accent of the parameter measures. Okay. These air, just like the ones that we had before. >>Um, and you want to train this to do something? So suppose that training is, for example, quantum optical state compression. Okay, you have an optical quantum optical state you'd like to see How much can I compress that to have the same quantum information in it? Okay. And we trained that to discover a efficient algorithm for that. We also trained it for reinforcement, learning for black box, quantum simulation and what? You know what is particularly interesting? Perhaps in new term for one way corner repeaters. So we said if we have a communication network that has these quantum optical neural networks stationed some distance away, you come in with an optical encoded pulse that encodes an optical cubit into many individual photons. How do I repair that multi foot on state to send them the corrected optical state out the other side? This is a one way error correcting scheme. We didn't know how to build it, but we put it as a challenge to the neural network. And we trained in, you know, in simulation we trained the neural network. How toe apply the >>weights in the Matrix transformations to perform that Andi answering actually a challenge in the field of optical quantum networks. So that gives us motivation to try to build these kinds of nonlinear narratives. And we've done a fair amount of work. Uh, in this you can see references five through seven. Here I've talked about thes programmable photonics already for the the benchmark analysis and some of the other related work. Please see Ryan's poster we have? Where? As I mentioned we where we have ongoing work in benchmarking >>optical computing assed part of the NTT program with our collaborators. Um And I think that's the main thing that I want to stay here, you know, at the end is that the exciting thing, really is that the physics tells us that there are many orders of magnitude of efficiency gains, uh, that are to be had, Uh, if we you know, if we can develop the technology to realize it. I was being conservative here with three orders of magnitude. This could be six >>orders of magnitude for larger neural networks that we may have to use and that we may want to use in the future. So the physics tells us there are there is, like, a tremendous amount of gap between where we are and where we could be and that, I think, makes this tremendously exciting >>and makes the NTT five projects so very timely. We're kind of halfway through now, I guess. Thank you for joining us on this session. So my name is Elton, I'm a Docker Captain. And I'm joined by Julie who was also a Docker Captain. This is actually this session was Julie's idea. We were talking about this learning of Docker and how it's a light bulb moment for lots of people. But Julie, she came up with this great idea for DevOps. So I'll let Julie introduce herself, and tell you a bit about what we're going to talk about. >> Thanks, Elton. So I'm Julie Lerman. I'm a Software Coach. I'm a developer. I've been a developer for over 30 years. I work independently and I'm a Docker captain. Also a Microsoft Regional Director. I wouldn't let them put it on there, because it makes people think I work for Microsoft but I don't. (he laughs) >> Yeah, so it's a weird title. So the Microsoft ID the Regional Director, it's like a kind of Uber, MVP. So I'm an MVP. And that's fine. That's just like a community recognition, just like you get with a Docker captain. So MVP is kind of like the micro version, Julie's MVP too. But then you get the Regional Director which is something that MVP get. >> Doesn't matter. >> I'm not surprised Julie. >> Stop, a humble man. (he laughs) >> We've been using Docker for years 10 years between. >> You probably, how long ago was your Docker aha moment? >> So 2014 I first started using Docker, so I was working on a project, where I was assaulting for a team who were building an Android tablet, and they were building the whole thing, so they Spec out the tablet, they got a bill over in the far East. They were building their own OS their own app to run on and of course all that stacks within it. But they was all talking to the services that were running in the power they wanted to use as your for that and .NET that was on-prem, though that technology historically . So I came in to do the .NET stuff is running in as your, but I got really friendly with the Linux guys. It was very DevOps, it was one team who did the whole thing. And they were using Docker for that their build tools, and for have the and the CI tools, and they were running their own get server and it was all in. >> Already until 2014. That's pretty cool. >> Yeah, pretty early introduction to it. And it was super cool. So I'd always been interested in Linux, but never really dug into it. Because the entry bar was so high runs nothing in it. So you read about this great open source project, and then you go and look at the documentation and you have to download the source code and build it and it's like, well, I'm not going to be doing that stuff. And then Docker came along. I do Docker run. (he laughs) >> Well, I would say it was a little definitely delayed from that. I'm still thinking Wait, when you first started saying that this company was building their own android system, you start thinking, they're building software, but no, they weren't building everything, which is pretty amazing. So, I have to say it took me quite a while, but I was also behind on understanding virtual machines. (both laughs) So, Docker comes along, and I have lots of friends who are using it, I spent a lot of time with Michelle Noorali this Monday, and she's big container person. And most of the people I hear talking about Docker are really doing DevOps, which is not my thing. As a developer, I always just said, let somebody else do that stuff. I want to code an architect and do things like that. And I also do a lot of data work. I'm not like a big data person doing analytics. Or I'm not a DBA. I'm more very involved in getting data in and out of applications. So my aha moment, I would say was like, four years ago, after Microsoft moved SQL Server over to Linux, and then put it inside a Docker image. So that was my very first experience, just saying, oh, what does this do and I downloaded the image. And Docker run. And then like literally I was like, holy smokes. SQL Servers already installed. The containers up like that, and then it's got to run a couple of Bashan SQL scripts to get all the system tables, and databases and things like that. So that's another 15 seconds. But that was literally for me. The not really aha, it was more like OMG, and I'll keep the EFF out just to keep it clean here. It was my OMG moment with Docker. So getting that start, then I worked with the SQL Server image and container and did some different things, with that in applications. And then eventually, expanded my knowledge out bit by bit, and got a deeper understanding of it and tried more things. So I get to a comfort level and then add to it and add to it. >> Yeah. And I think that the great thing about that is that as you're going on that journey that aha moments keep coming, along we had another aha moment this week, with the new announcement that you can use your Docker compose files, and use your Docker commands to spin stuff up running in as your container instances. So like that you've kept up that learning journey is there if you want to go down, How do I take my monolithic application, and break up into pieces and run those in containers? Like suddenly the fact that you can just glue all these things together in run it on one platform, and manage everything in the same way? And these light bulbs keep on coming. So, you've seen the modernization things that people are doing that's a lot of the work that I do now, and taking these big applications, you just write a Docker file, and you've got your 15 year old .NET application running in the container. And you can run that in the cloud with no changes to code, and not see them. But that's super powerful for people. >> And I think one of the really important things, especially for people like you and I, who are also teachers, and is to try to really remember that moment, because I know a lot of times, when people are deeply expert in something it they forget how hard it was, or what it felt like not to understand it that context. So I still have held on to that. So when I talk, I like to do introduction, I like to help people get that aha moment. And then I say, Okay, now go on to the, they're really expert people. You're ready to learn more, but it's really important to especially, maybe we're teachers, conference speakers, book authors, pluralsight, etc. But lots of other people, who are working on teams they might already be somebody who's gotten there with Docker, and they want to help their teammates understand Docker. So I think it's really important to, for everybody who wants to share that to kind of have a little empathy, and remember what that was like, and understand that sometimes it just takes explaining it a different way explaining maybe, just tweaking your expression, or some of the words or your analogies. >> Yeah, that's definitely true. And you often find this it's a technology, that people really become affectionate for, they have a real deep feeling for documents, once they start using it, and you get these internal champions in companies who say, "This is the stuff I've been using, I've been using this at home or whatever." And they want to bring it into their project, and it's pretty cool to be able to say to them this is, take me on the same journey that you've been on, or you've been on a journey, which was probably slightly more investment for you, because you had to learn from scratch. But now you can relay that back into your own project. So you can take, you don't have to take everyone from scratch like you did. You can say, here's the Docker file for our own application. This is how it works. And bringing things into the terms that people are using everyday , I think is something that's super powerful. Why because you're completely strange. (he laughs) >> Oh, I was being really cool about your video. (both laughs) Maybe it's just how it streaming back to me. I think the teacher thing again, like we'll work a little harder and, bump our knees and stub our toes, or tear our hair out or whatever pain we have to go through, with that learning because, it's also kind of obsessive. And you can steer people away from those things, although it's also helpful to let them be aware like this might happen, and if it does, it's because of this. But that's not the happy path. >> Yeah, absolutely. And I think, it's really interesting talking to people about the time you're trying to get to what problem are they trying to solve? It's interesting, you talk about DevOps there, and how that sort of not an area, that you've done a lot of stuff in. Writing a couple of organizations, whether they're really trying hard to move that model, and trying to break down the barriers, between the team who build the software, and the team who run the software, but they have those barriers, but 20 years, it's really hard to write that stuff down. And it's a big cultural shift, it needs a lot of investment. But if you can make a technological change as well, if you can get people using the same tools, the same languages, the same processes to do things, that makes it so much easier. Like now my operators are using Docker files, on there and the security team are going into the Docker file and cozening it, or DevOps team or building up my compose file, and everyone's using the same thing, it really helps a lot, to bind people together to work on the same area. >> I also do a lot of work in domain Dave Vellante design, and that whole idea of collaboration, and bringing together teams, that don't normally work together, and bringing them together, and enabling them to find a way to collaborate giving them tools for collaboration, just like what you're saying with, having the same terms and using the same tools. So that's really powerful. You gave me a great example of one of your clients, aha moments with Docker. Do you remember which that was? The money yes, it's a very powerful Aha. >> Yes. >> She cherish that. >> The company that I've worked for before, when I was doing still get thought that I can sort a thing, and they knew I'd go into containers. I was working for Docker at the time. And I went in just as if I wasn't a sales pitch or anything, I was just as a favor to talk to them about what containers would look like if payments, their operation, big heavy Windows users, huge number of environment, lots of VMs that are all running stuff, to get the isolation, and give them what they needed. And I did this presentation of IT. So it wasn't a technical thing. It was very high level, it was about how containers kind of work. And I'm fundamentally a technical person, so I probably have more detail in there. And then you would get from a sales pitch, but it was very much about, you can take your applications, you can wrap them up the running these things for containers, you still get the isolation, you can run loads more of them on the same hardware that you've got, and you don't pay a Windows license each of those containers, you pay a license for the server that the right one. >> That's it, that's the moment. >> And the head of IT said that's going to save us millions of dollars. (he laughs) And that was his aha moment. >> I'm going to wrap that into my conference session, about getting to the Docker, for sure getting that aha moment. My experience is less that but wow, I mean, that's so powerful. When you're talking to come C level people about making those kinds of changes, because you need to have their buy in. So as a developer and somebody who works with developers, and that's kind of my audience, my experience more has been, when I'm giving conference presentations, and I'll start out in a room of people, and I have to say, when I'm at .NET focus conference, I find that the not there yet with Docker. Part of the audience is a big one. So I kind of do a poll at the beginning of the talk. Who's heard of Docker, obviously, they're in the room, but curious because you still don't really understand it. And that's usually a bulk of the room. And what I like to ask at the end is, of all of you that, that first group, like, do you feel like you get it now, like you just get what it is and what it does, as opposed to I don't know what this thing is. It's for rocket scientists. Is that's how I felt about it. I was like, I'm just a developer. It wasn't my thing. But now, I'm still not doing DevOps, I use Docker as a really important tool, during development and test and that's actually one of it I'm going to be talking about that. But it's my session a little later. Oh, like the next hour. It's about using Docker, that my aha Docker, SQL Server, in an image and but using that in Dave Vellante, it's not about the DevOps and the CI/CD and Kubernetes, I can spell it. (he laughs) Especially when I get to say k eight s, Like I even know the cool Lingo (mumbles) on Twitter. (he laughs) >> I think that's one of the cool things about this technology stack in particular, I think to get the most out of it, you need to dig in really light if you want to, if you're looking at doing this stuff in production, if you're attracted by the fact that I can have a managed container platform in anytime. And I can deploy my app, everywhere using the same set of things that compose files or humidity files or whatever. And if you really want to take advantage of that, you kind of have to get down to the principles understand all go on a proper kind of learning journey. But if you don't want to do that, you can kind of stop wherever it makes sense for you. So like even when I'm talking to different audiences, is a lot strangely enough, I did a pool size large bin this morning. It was quite a specific topic. It was about building applications in containers. So is about using containers, to compile your app and then package it, so you can build anywhere. But even a session like that, the first maybe two minutes, I give a lightning quick overview, of what containers are and how you use them. Here's exactly like you say, people will come to a session, if it's got Docker or humanities in the title. But if they don't have the entry requirements. They've never really used this stuff. And we were up here and it's a big dump for them. So I try and always have that introductory slide. >> I had to do that on the fly. >> Sorry. >> I've done that on the fly in conference, because yes, doing like, ASP.NET Core with Entity Framework and containers. And, 80% of the room, really didn't know anything about Docker. So, instead of talking like five minutes about Docker and then demoing the rest, I ended up spending more time talking about Docker, to make sure everybody was really you could tell that difference when they're like oh, like that they understood enough, in order to be follow along and understand the value of what it was that I was there to show, about it in that core, I'm also this is making me remember that first time I actually use Docker compose, because it was a while, I was just using the SQL Server, Docker image, in on my development machine for quite a while. And because I wasn't deploying, I was learning and exploring and so I was on my development machine, so I didn't need to do anything else. So the first time I really started orchestrating, that was yet another aha moment. But I was ready for it then. I think you know if you start with Docker compose and you don't haven't done the other, maybe I would write but I was ready, because I'd already gotten used to using the tooling and, really understanding what was going on with containers. Then that Docker compose was like yeah. (he laughs) >> It's just the next one, in the line is a great comment actually in the chat about someone in the chat. >> From chat? >> Yeah, from Steve saying, that he could see there would be an aha moment for his about security. And actually that's absolutely, it's so when security people, first want to get their head around containers, they get worried that if someone can compromise the app in the container, they might get a break out, and get to all the other containers. And suddenly, instead of having one VM compromised, you have 100 containers compromised. But actually, when you dig into it so much easier to get this kind of defense in depth, when you're building in containers, because you have your tape on an image that's owned by your team who produced the path, whether or not they will have their own images, that are built with best practices. You can sign your images, through your platform doesn't run anything that isn't signed, you have a full history of exactly what's in the source code is what's in production, there's all sorts of, ways you can layer on security that, attract that side of the audience. >> I've been looking at you this whole time, and like I forgot about the live chat. There's the live chat. (he laughs) There's Scott Johnston in live chat. >> Yes. >> People talking about Kubernetes and swarm. I'm scrolling through quickly to see if anybody's saying, well, my aha moment was. >> There was a good one. What was this one from Fatima earlier on, Maya was pointing out with almost no configuration onto a VM, and couldn't believe it never looked back on us. >> Yeah. >> That's exactly, on one command, if your image is mostly built, SaaS has some sensible defaults, it just all works. And everyone's (mumbles). >> Yeah, and the thing that I'm doing in my session is, what I love. the fact that for development team, Development Testing everybody on the team, and then again on up the pipeline to CI/CD. It's just a matter of, not only do you have your SaaS code, but in your SaaS code, you've got your Docker compose, and your Docker compose just makes sure, that you have the development environment that you need, all the frame, everything that you need is just there, without having to go out and find it and install it. >> There were no gap in a development environment with CI build the production. So I'm hearing, you don't hear but I can hear that we need to wrap up. >> Oh, yeah. >> Get yourself prepared for your next session, which everyone should definitely, I'll be watching everyone else do. First year though, that WT2 is digital. So I'm coming to you remotely. Not from Palo Alto, but from my home in San Jose. I'm very please to welcome the VP of Diversity and Inclusion from VMware, Shanis Windland. Shanis, welcome to theCUBE. >> Thank you, it's great to be here. >> WT2 is one of my favorite events. I have had the opportunity to go live and cover it for theCUBE the last couple of years, and it is truly one of those events where you walk in and it's sort of that beautiful quiet outdoors in the Palo Alto campus. >> Mm-hmm. >> But you feel this very large sense of community and it's so positive, but it's overwhelming in how genuine it is. >> Mm-hmm. >> I can't imagine how challenging it was to have to make the decision, not too long ago to have to convert that to digital. But I can also imagine that that community that VMware has built with WT2 was a big facilitator of getting women everywhere to go, "Absolutely. "No matter where I am, I want to be here." Tell me a little bit about that quick pivot and what some of the things were that pleasantly surprised you about the event the other day. >> Yeah, so I think we were watching obviously the news and we decided probably a little bit earlier than other conferences did make the move to virtual so that we could really spend the time to really plan it and make it special. So I'm so pleased with how the event turned out. As you know, it's usually a smaller event of 500, 550 women in-person. And this year, we were able to have over 5,000 attendees, which is fantastic. And I still felt this amazing energy from the conference. You know, the chat was going and people were super positive and cheering each other on, and giving each other advice, and talking about what the speakers were talking about and it was an incredible experience. I was so surprised and energized by my experience at the conference. So happy I was able to attend. >> 5,000 is remarkable. I'm sure that blew your expectations. >> Yeah. >> Totally. >> But it's also, you know, we're living in this very different time where everything is disrupted, and it's hard to engage. The number of your speakers that I have spoken to about this event have all talked about how interactive every session was with hundreds of women >> Mm-hmm. >> who logged in to each session. And that is... I think that speaks to the community and the reputation that WT2 has built over the last five years. But tell me a little bit about how this pivot happened. So the theme, We Rise, very poignant and so important in this very uncertain climate that we're in. Talk to me about the importance and the development of that theme which really helped create some energy from everybody being all over the world. >> Yeah, I mean, we talked about the theme a long time ago and developed it, you know, with a collection of companies, the consortium that we worked on in planning the conference. And it is so relevant to what's happening right now, the experience of, not only women, but people everywhere feeling isolated and the need for connection and the need to feel like you can still succeed and win at work. And it was just so amazing. And one of my favorite pieces was when Laura Dern was actually quoting the Maya Angelou poem about rising. It was so incredibly powerful and just really wrapped up the day in an amazing way with that theme. And I know, I personally walked away feeling energized and feeling like, "Yes, we can do this, "we can continue to rise regardless of the situation." >> So tell me, you are the VP of Diversity and Inclusion. What are some of the changes that you're... Or the evolution of that role, even in the last two months of this pandemic, knowing that every single person from Pat Gelsinger, all the way down, and everybody across the globe, is really emotionally challenged right now, as well as potentially, you know, impacted financially. >> Yeah, I think it's just been super important to talk about empathy and leadership and supporting our employees. And I think it's truly given leaders and managers and employees a totally different perspective on what that means right now, and at VMware where I've felt so much empathy from our leadership and so much empathy from our managers, and just in terms of understanding employee experience, this isn't normal working-with-from-home for anybody. This is working from home, not having help, dealing with homeschooling, still trying to succeed at work, and a variety of other things that people have. Sick family members, worried about the world and work. And I think it's just really, really important for leaders to continue to check in and connect with their employees. >> Empathy is so important, and I'm glad that you mentioned that, because when we talked to the C-suite or executives, I was talking to some of the other speakers earlier this morning who helped develop women to be in leadership positions. And instead of asking, you know, "What are some of the characteristics that you can identify "if this person is on the C-suite path?" I always want to understand what are the hard and soft skills. And I never liked the word, soft. I really should >> Mm-hmm. >> (mumbles) that up because empathy is one of those. But it's something now that I think is not only is important, it's also contagious. So if you see that from a leader, I think that the impact to productivity can be huge. >> Mm-hmm, no, that's so true. And I think that employees, regardless of their working environment still really want to succeed at work. They still want to feel like they can have a career and move forward, and they still want to support their companies in succeeding. And it's so important that they feel like regardless of their personal situation, they can do that and can contribute. >> So one of the things that I saw Laura Dern mention in her closing keynote was about, you know, you don't have to stay in your swim lane. And when I was looking at your background, I thought you're a CFO and a financial exec. Tell me about your pivot or evolution into diversity and inclusion. >> Yeah, it was a surprising turn for me as well. You know, I spent my entire career doing finance, but coming to VMware, it was really, for me, an opportunity to participate in building the company where I wanted to continue to work. And I really took my business background in building companies and building cultures and applying it to this role. I think diversity and inclusion succeeds when it's really felt by every single employee every single day. And in a global company like VMware, the only way that works is if each and every employee and manager embrace that. So they look around and they see people like them succeeding and they feel like they can have the best career possible at VMware. And when I approach this role, that's how I think about applying it to VMware. >> Tell me about the culture at VMware before this hit. And how has it evolved in just the last eight weeks, knowing, well, knowing there's a lot of uncertainty and probably assuming, "We're going to be working "from home for a while"? What is that overall spirit of the company? >> Yeah, so VMware was already having, you know, quite a number of distributed employees but still kind of an office-centric culture. And we were working on an initiative to move that faster, and our executives are calling it, Faster in to The Future, where we're really embracing this distributed working model moving forward. It's been this huge impetus to grab onto this as an opportunity to build the future of the company, to tap into new talent pools and to really embrace how and where our employees want to work and give them the choice on how and where they want to work. >> And one of the things too, I work from home a lot when I'm not traveling. So there's a balance. And I thought, "Well, I know how to work from home, "but this is a very different situation." A lot of folks I'm talking to are all acknowledging the same emotional concerns or waking up one day going, "I don't feel very motivated today." But also some of the things that I'm hearing resoundingly are everybody's in that same storm. And acknowledging that is really critical because that's also an authentic way of communicating. I'd like to know though, your thoughts about the fact that we're all, you know, using Zoom, and we have, thankfully the technologies. VMware has a lot of technology to enable remote workforce. The connection and thought, diversity of thought. What are some of your recommendations for maybe folks who aren't used to working from home? How can they express or feel the confidence to express their thoughts and their concerns or maybe ideas that they have that this pandemic is bringing up? >> Well, I'm thinking that, first of all, they have to feel like the company is actually supporting that. So you know, to your point about feeling burnt out or just not feeling like they're able to engage. VMware announced pandemic leaves for all of their employees to allow exactly that. If you need to take a break, take a break. No questions asked. And everyone's dealing with a lot of different things. So I think that's important. And then I think that managers and leaders and employees can just create the connection across the company. We've seen so many things at VMware, virtual coffees, parties. We did a sort of variety show as an all-hands and had 20,000 employees calling in to it. Just amazing ways for people to feel like they can still connect with the company and feel part of the community. But I think we also have to be empathetic to Zoom fatigue, which is great technology. But trying to be on video all the time and on can be difficult for people. And so really just staying in touch with people and being honest about where we are, I think is really important for everybody. >> So WT2 number five, first time virtual, but huge success, massive amounts of people, 5,000 or so. As you look forward, you know, we know VM world, huge event. theCUBE has been there for many years, is going to be digital this year. So we're also kind of anticipating, we're not going to have these in-person events for, who knows, maybe it's a year or more. Are you already looking out to WT2, the sixth annual knowing confidently, "We can do this virtually"? But what are your thoughts, kind of looking forward next year based on the community sense that you saw and felt the other day? >> Yeah, so I think there was so much special about the in-person event. You mentioned this at the beginning. This smaller group of women able to connect and really build that in-person community made the event so special, yet it was so incredibly successful, you know, as a virtual event. As an example, sitting and just watching Laura Dern and Kathryn Finney one-to-one essentially, was an amazing experience for me. It felt like I was there with them just having a conversation, which was so cool. And so I think we're really considering how we can continue to have that virtual community but offer that in-person experience. And you know, we haven't entirely figured that out, but it's definitely something top of mind for us. That participation, that broad community, continuing to build, that is going to be so important. >> The inclusion piece of, just struck me when you were talking about, you know, everybody. And I saw lots of comments on Twitter, everybody loved Kathryn Finney and Laura Dern. But one of the things that I find comforting in this time is doing this job from my home office in San Jose. But even watching the local newscasters or you know, the national newscasters at home, everyone is in the same storm. There is a sense of, I would say inclusion in that, that seeing, you know, a recent Oscar-winner, Laura Dern at her home just sort of, I don't want to say, levels the playing field, but it's a connection point that you probably wouldn't have had with her had things been like they were last year. >> Totally, you know? And just the opportunity to chat with her virtually and feel like, yeah, it's very, very connected because we're just right next to each other even though we really weren't. It is truly special and does make you feel and remember that everyone is in the same boat. >> So and one thing that I'm thinking about with your background being a finance expert, is that helpful to you in your role? Again, 'cause there's so much financial uncertainty right now, right? We hear all of that on the news, it's always so negative. Does that give you kind of a different basis by which to help evolve the Diversity and Inclusion program at VMware, understanding that employees have concerns about finances, they're in tough concerns about finances? Tell me a little bit about that experience that you have in this new role and how maybe in this current situation they're dovetailing together. >> Yeah, I think it's really around being metrics-driven and ensuring that we're using data to inform decisions about programs we build and how we talk to leaders and teams. But my finance background and really understanding data and numbers has helped me in this role tremendously. And I think you're right. You know, people are struggling with finances. Maybe their spouses have lost their job or their parents have lost their job. And again, it really just comes back to empathy and understanding what people are experiencing and ensuring that we open the door for them to be able to talk about it and bring that to work and be okay with it. >> And even the governor of California, Gavin Newsom has been talking for weeks about making data-driven decisions. And the tech-nerd in me just lights up right away. I'm like, "I know what that is." but it's important. But a lot of... There are folks that, if you're not in tech, don't understand that, right, because of the economic impacts and some of the toll. But having that, I guess, pragmatic side that I would say, in conjunction with that empathy, that's a pretty good winning combination. >> Yes, exactly. I am very pragmatic (laughs). >> Well, Shanis, it's been a pleasure having you on the program. Thank you so much. I'm so pleased to hear how successful the event was. I'm not at all surprised. But it's great to hear that the sense of community and the energy was there in spades in a digital environment. >> Yes, I'm so glad you were able to be there with us. from the silicon angle media office in Boston Massachusetts it's the queue now here's your host Stu minimun hi this is a cute conversation from our Boston area studio I'm Stu minimun and joining for this deep dive into partnership discussions is Brian Regan the CMO of activity Oh Brian great to see you and happy 2020 great to see you used to thanks all right so we had a conversation with yourself and a shuch talking about 10c some of the activities the general momentum of ectopy oh but really want to spend a little bit of time talking about partnerships so Activia being a software company always has add a number of partnerships so you know when we talk a little bit of just the philosophy of the company and you know how important that is for you know technology partnerships as well as the go-to-market absolutely and I think we you know in 2019 we really increased our focus our investments and really our entire company alignment towards five types of partners specifically one was relatively new partnership for us which is a software partnership with IBM and their data and AI division of IBM under Arvid Krishna and Rob Thomas that we really the OEM our product to go after the test data management market opportunity and really become a data platform for a lot of their initiatives that involve Watson and and analytics as well as test data management that was a huge new partnership for us in 2019 well of course a new area of partnership because IBM I understand is probably the longest and oldest partnership that activity oh is that absolutely so the software group was probably the last group that we have partnered with in inside of the IBM corporation but we saw incredible traction throughout the year great pipeline growth from literally the beginning of the the Inc signing the the paper and have a roster of incredible logos to show for it over the last 12 months yeah it's always interesting to look if you talk about software and how a ifit's to it that was 2019 one of the things we said just you know okay what is AI are along that spectrum but you know how do these things stitch together everything to a Maya feed for the training algorithms or there are other things I can do so that sounds like you found some areas where customers are going to be working at leveraging your solution absolutely and certainly with IBM's acquisition of Red Hat and their embrace of containers and kubernetes that application modernization intersection point where we can bring data into containers is going to be a big theme for us in 2020 as well okay exciting stuff so that's on the software piece so if you have software hardware still matters into C 20 it turns out we still need to run things on servers and storage so and and switches and the like so we're fortunate to have partnered with Dell EMC as one of our focus infrastructure partners we have reference architectures for converged infrastructure using the rail and their rack designs on the VX flex OS underneath and really going after the database cloning market opportunity so bringing a essentially a data center pod architecture with Activia software running inside to power these databases of service opportunities that exist in a large enterprises alright interesting that you know EMC was not one that I would have thought would have been the first one to partnership Dell EMC with a much broader portfolio it seems a natural fit absolutely and and we were excited actually to based on client demand to also introduce the support to write to data domain so we can actually support data domain essentially we treated almost like an object target to increase the useful life and actually increase the power of data domain within these broader infrastructures that the enterprise clients have you know I had a great conversation with the shuch talking about what one of the things about 10 C is we've known for a long time that object storage is so important for the storage industry and where we want to go but customers shouldn't have to think about it it's just how we enable that and that leads up to of course cloud is big piece absolutely NC there so so where the important partnership from a cloud standpoint so certainly all of the clouds for us in our multi cloud effort are important we we support seven of the hyper scalars and and certainly you know Alibaba cloud IBM cloud Oracle cloud VMware cloud in addition to the three that people think about most but from a go-to-market standpoint we were probably the most embedded with Google cloud over the last year to 18 months again we've aligned a lot of both go to market but also engineering efforts to make sure that we're supporting Google cloud in the best way possible bringing the most compelling and differentiated offerings particularly for database workloads for backup dr and ultimately database cloning well congratulations important partnership especially when you talk about that engineering standpoint Google is not one just to make oh you know we made a handshake and it's good it really they dig in from an engineering standpoint and we know that Google makes the smartest stuff out there they'll tell you that so if you you've gone through the wringer on that that that really speaks to the architectural absolutely piece of the environment and and credit to a shook in the entire engineering organization I mean that is to your point very much an engineering first and then go to market second type of relationship and we're delighted to be in the go-to-market side of that okay go to market then is probably another way piece of absolutely so the last two types of partners that were really focused on for 2020 and we certainly got very serious in 2019 one is global systems integrators and TCS has really emerged is a really key partner for us in that landscape when we think about the enterprise accounts that we target you know a billion and up in revenue they're in every single one of them and we have several wins that we can look back on 2019 and credit their influence they are certainly helping the application modernization initiatives within all of these enterprises and partnering with active Pheo to really bring a data management and test data management capability to bear really was an important step for us in nineteen that we hope to accelerate in 2020 and then the the last piece and last but not least from a go-to-market standpoint is the chat and you know important channel partners whether it's Trace 3 particularly on the west coast whether it's data trend you know from the Midwest and East Coast these types of channel partners have really helped us you know become embedded in some of the largest accounts in in North America as well as globally and really are the the trusted adviser inside of those accounts that we want to continue to enable with compelling differentiated offerings like Tennessee yeah there were a lot of transformations going on in the channel they were all trying to figure out how they live in that multi-cloud world seems a natural fit for those that are thriving and surviving absolutely in this era that those would be the ones that you'd be working with absolutely so as a software company you know the part of our power is the ecosystem power and but we believe that by continuing to foster these multifaceted relationships they all have actually really fascinating benefits across the board the IBM relationship for example has ecosystem benefits in their channel and their systems integrators the Dell EMC relationship has you know ripple effects into their channel and their distribution points of distribution so we believe it's a very complimentary ecosystem that we're building we're excited at the possibility of an even stronger 2020 because of it awesome the one that you mentioned actually in our earlier conversation talking about active intensity si P of course a big important partner also a huge it's an important partner from a standpoint of it's maybe the most critical workload in most enterprises that use sa P and being a part of their technology stack inside of the Hana enterprise cloud is a critical capability for us but it's also an important point of distribution as they go out to their enterprise customers and are looking to become more relevant in a broader sense of data management so we're certainly excited about the work that we're doing with them we're delighted about the influence that they've had in terms of our roadmap and pushing our platform to be even more capable particularly for Hana workloads all right a lot of different pieces Brian congratulations on all that happened in 2019 and looking forward to watching the momentum in 2020 Thanks C this year Excited to have there could be four really chatty people in this segment warning you now we've got Mandy Dollar while the cmo abou me Anibal Corker s V p of sales guys welcome thistles been in Austin. This is day one of the main event partner event started yesterday Partner Summit One of the things that is always very resonant with Bhumi events as you get this sense of collaboration with your partners with your customers and it's very symbiotic. So some of the numbers that came out today I wanted to kind of geek out on numbers because last boom, the world was on the 11 months ago, and I think the numbers we were talking about where 7500 customers adding five new a day. Now it's over 9000 in over 80 countries. Your partner program is blowing up 580 partners, incredible growth. And Chris McNab told Jonah me earlier today. This event? Actually, no, he said in the keynote five x What? It was the first event. Wow. You guys all look very refreshed for being this busy facade. Mandy, talk to us about what's going on. Abou me from your perspective. The new branding is really cool to have that represent what booby is delivering. We're at a >>growth trajectory and we had to refresh our brand to put a new face on this business so we could accelerate our growth. This is a whole new boo me to the world. When I stood up, it sails kick off earlier this year. In February, we reposition the company and focused ourselves on selling solutions. And as a part of that strategy, to start to amplify this brand to really become more of a known entity in the market, it was time for us to polish the brand up. You know, we had tremendous product market fit for many years. We just forgot to tell the world. So when I came on board, I can't keep a secret. Here I am Brandy. Look and feel. Lots of new customer stories. We're accelerating outcomes. >>Very clean. Logo queen branding. What's the brand promise. Where do you want to take the brand? What's next? Where's this going? Take us through the vision. >>Great question. The vision for the business Is that why we exist? We went through and, you know, we deliver a connected business experience that the real reason why we exist is to accelerate business outcomes for our customers. That is our vision, all right. We're connecting and unifying everything in a ditch. Digital ecosystem. The world has gone digital. No longer is software eating the world digital. Is the new game in town gloomy as well. Poised to go do that? That is the vision. And it's all about the customer and sharing their stories and the winds that they have worthy, enabling technology that drives that outcome faster and better than anybody else >>we had on earlier the founder of Bumi sharing early successes, Lisa asked him the background behind all started, and he said, we made a big bet and self aware Founder said We got lucky and he got lucky. Made a big bet on cloud. Now you guys have 9000 customers. Last year, your number one number one priority was customer success equation then the keynote again this year. You guys are crazy about customer outcomes. What >>is >>that mean? You hear customer success equation? What is the equation? Because the math equation isn't like, is it? What? What is the formula? >>Well, I think it entails a couple of key things. It starts with the product right, and it doing exactly what people are looking for it to do. And the reality is most people come in and they have an idea that they want to do X, and they really end up doing X plus y Times E. And and that becomes that's a big part of it. So getting to understand the platform and then showing them, you know that we really care about their success, that in fact it's either win, win relationship or lose lose, we have to make them successful. We have a tremendous muscle when it comes to customer success and our support efforts and those types of things. So just making sure that they're on the right journey, that they're leveraging the platform that's doing what they wanted to do. And again, we're seeing so many customers come back in now because of that and thinking that they can solve so many more problems than what they originally anticipate >>talking on our opening around. Um, you're successful business model like you talk more about that. But in contrast to what we've been reporting on our sites and silken angle in the Cube is Wall Street sees we work pulled their I p o uber, all these big companies, they buy market share, get a position, and then they try to crank the monetization. They're not being looked upon favorably right now, because that entails extracts from the customer. You guys are more on the other side, the Cloud SAS model, which is provide value if you need more, buy more, lower price fits increased. That's an Amazon like flywheel. Yeah, So you guys are on the positive side of the SAS formula as you have that first you guys agree with that's happening. But what do you say to customers who is booming? Because now you're you have leverage software business. Yeah, we have the professional service is what does this mean for customers? >>We'll get I would say that what it means is that they can come in and solve a problem so much faster than they ever thought they could solve it before. They're thinking they want to go on a journey. Everyone talks about the journey right, and it all. It comes in about 1000 different shapes and sizes. And with Bumi having a layer like this to be able to connect, what you need to connect when you need to connect it, how you need to connect it, that's and doing that in such in a fashion that no one ever really thought. And again. You said you had Rick Nucci and in the Founder where they thought I just talked to a minute ago. And I always say he was talking about how he was listening to some of the customers success stories. And I looked at him. I said You didn't think they were ever going to do all this stuff, that they could do all these things And he said, You know what? We didn't anticipate. It really didn't and so getting them to do that. But the key, to be honest, a big part of our growth, although we're acquiring lots of new logo. Certainly, as you mentioned, let's new customers a huge part of our growth is that again people are going, man. OK, I I brought in a new SAS application service now, or something like that. Okay, that's good. But I've got all these FTP problems and I've got this database issue and I need to be able to leverage this existing on Premiere P. And now I'm going to work Day and I have to be able to, and it's just it's just we see them just starting to get very creative about how they're leveraging the fact >>it's opening up. You say, you know, from a marketing perspective, unlocking potential. But it's really true. I I saw yesterday first and the manifestation of the Bumi fandom. That's rial. I was talking to one of your customers who integrated use integration for a particular opportunity. I thought there might be some, you know? Wow, there's gonna be a lot of data coming out. What can we do with this? And all of the, um, kind of side benefits that came from that they couldn't have predicted. Neither could have Rick Nucci, but how they're able to become even, you know, as a transportation logistics provider, trusted advisors to the carriers and the shippers that work with them. And then they're realizing, Oh, actually what we're doing, you know, under the hood with Bhumi is making a carrier more productive because the workload is less less clicks, etcetera. So it's really it shows the transformation doesn't just stay within your customer, their customers as well. The sort of this snowball effect. It really got that resoundingly yesterday from summer combo, >>where we see the people, the customers figure out if this becomes a common data layer for their monetization journey, right. So now they have control of all this data, no matter where it is and how it's going out in public cloud private clouds, public's ask, whatever it is, and then they now they've got control. They can become creative with the data. Now they can provide new service is to customers and suppliers and partners and internal stakeholders, whatever it might be. And I think that's that's it. Haven't clicked for us a couple years ago, and Mandy has been great about making that really how we send the message and it's really seen takeoff. >>We really speak about transformation, right? That's business processes. That's customer experience. How do you take that data and build upon it using our flow capabilities and take thes wrote processes and start to have them automated in a way that you're driving new customer experiences. Right? Employees on boarding is one that we use internally. We talked about it before our MPs went from a negative. I don't know, two incredibly positive, right? That's what this technology can do. Once you have that data layer in, we become that enabling technology to to go drive these additional >>out. And he has net promoter score for the folks at the jargon that this piece of a good point with the new branding we saw, it resonates. Well, it's gonna create a lot of brand impressions. I know you've done a great job of getting it out there. It's only gonna get better. But you get the brain of pressure. Then I want to know who is booming. If they know Bhumi, who what's the new room? We're gonna be like, What's the plan? How we're going to scale up the messaging? How you gonna take it? The market with the brand, There >>s O. Our core strategic initiatives are really what's on top of mind for Cee Io's right connection is important. That the stuff that will talked about in terms of on Prem and multi hybrid cloud scenarios right modernization, right? Getting stuff off of legacy Fed has a massive opportunity in terms of modernization. We're seeing that already. You know, we were Fed RAM certified in August. We've already got her for stealing the door. Congratulations. A fantastic opportunity on modernization, transformation. The stuff I spoke about customer experience, the one I'm particularly excited about. This is the marketing strategy coming through the innovation layer. We have a quick serve retailer that is now taking facial recognition. When I go through a drive thru triangulating my data with Maya vehicle license plate, making me on the spot loyalty offers and also saying, Oh, Mandy, would you like your regular breath breakfast sandwich Order That is the artist >>or not, you're in a good mood or Rolls Express. Oh, >>yes, >>minutes late today she's going to storm through here, right? Like that level of sentiment analysis based on my voice. The other stuff we heard this morning, right? We're triangulating all of that to go Dr whole new ways of doing business. So that's what I find hard. Your >>ecosystem is a key part of any growth strategy. I have to get the customer equation I loved. Loved the business model. You know, a big fan Disclose that everyone knows that. But be successful. You guys have a challenge. You have to grow the brand. You had to build the ecosystem, build the community with education pieces again. They're these >>air >>real blocking and tackling things. What? You guys, what's your opinion? What do you guys gonna do with that? Give us the playbook. >>We've brought it all together under one brand now, right Community saw this morning the boom Evers. The >>asked 1000 people in that community manager. >>Absolutely. And now we are ready for exponential growth, right? We have a way to game. If I We have a way to certify and train more people are partners. Demand it. There's a skills gap in the market in technology. That's a known fact for many years. So how do we quickly enable intelligence around the Bumi platform and mind trust and share? So that's something that's gonna happen. So we're creating this in waves were creating a viral ality component to our community right, all under the Bumi brand. So it all becomes additive. And that was important for us, as far as a growing up as a business is. Well, we're We're on this fast growth trajectory and everybody's off doing their thing. So I came in and said, All right, guys, let's let's build some cohesion here and that is going to help us as we scale this business >>will. On the sales side, you're gonna get a lot of pull now from the marketing Digital's. A lot of organic stuff goes on digital. We know we do a lot of cubes that we see the data. You guys still get the lead. You got too close sale cycles. This is kind of the business side of it. How's that going? What's that? What's an engagement looked like? How fast do Customs committees that word of mouth they talk to each other? What if some of the dynamics in the field? >>Well, we're seeing some of those times shrink. It's weird. I've been here seven years, so it's, you know, my team then was like 10. Now it's 470 or something, and so we've grown very fast, but it's on. We came in before. It was kind of like a connection deal. Last minute I thought, you know Oh gosh, I got an immigration problem. But now, a couple years later, it started really extending because it became a little more strategic. But now we're starting to see it shrink because people realize they're bringing it in, and they know that it's something that's key to what they have to do. What we're seeing is, is it's it's It's something that all of our partners are partners air so critical to helping us with the journey because we're really still just talking about one little piece of that larger pie. And so they come in and become with Come in with us every single time and we're globalizing as you mentioned all the countries that we're doing this in. But you know, France and Germany, or big efforts for Japan, the Fed those were like four areas. If I could pick that partners and how we're going to those markets >>are credible. Follow up on that. Just as you guys are getting these deals. Whats When does a customer know they have a Bumi opportunity? What is their problems? or a moment Is that a certain use cases? It like, Wow, I got integration problem. Is it integration? Problem called Boo me. What's that? What's the success pattern that you're seeing for the winds? >>You know, I'm gonna go back to the four that we talked about because, you know, part of part of my challenges, the sales leader for seven years was I've said this is the most organic technology I've ever I've ever dealt with. Representative. Because when we walked in, it could go anywhere. People wanted to do Data Analytics. They wanted to solve that TP problem. They wanted to do front. And you heard Olive from Sky. And she's thinking front end customer support stuff. So it really could go anywhere now is always always about managing data and collecting it. But, I mean, it really was. It comes from so many places, and the sale cycle has been, you know, has changed because of it. >>So as the marketing and the brand have evolved since Mandy spent on board, how much are you time? Are you still spending describing? Okay. So Bumi is how much more brand awareness and recognition do you have now? And how is that making the job easier? Because the attention the renewal rate is really high. 97%. >>Yeah, what's actually almost 99% from our field customers, and then we get over AM customers as well, about 97%. So how do we How do we keep the customers >>in terms of brand awareness, all the recognition? How much if you compared to seven years ago, when you were having to say, Well, buoy is now with Chris, McNall said, Hey, there's gonna be 100 different mentions of customer stories at this event alone. How much easier is your job? Enough sense? Because people are now much more aware of Bloomie's capability. >>I think people realize they need. This is what I say to all of our partners and even we're talking Deltek people. Every single customer will invest in this type of technology over the next several years. It might be a very tactical thing to do, but but call it a night pass. Call it a simpler way to connect and manage and access your data. So, yes, we're proud we're over that bridge to say OK, this is what was legitimate I think we're still having conversations about how strategic it is. But again, that's typically an interpretive process. We weigh very rarely come in and say Someone says, Oh, I'm going to replace all of this So it is. It's I'm going to solve this problem And then they go, Oh, all right now And its architects and leaders are going, Oh, well, we could solve all of these other problems that we've had >>Well, and if I may, they say, normally it would have taken me months to do this and you did it in days. Yes, we're interested. So that's that's the value. Proper >>the equation. Accelerate, right? >>Well, they were. The thing that we're observing is that the projects are increasing, not decreasing, and the number of project because they could be little things. That's right. That time to value is the proof points versus the long monolith proposal. It's up and running, and the jet states for months and months. >>Well, you talk about the integrators that we have so many integrators that we work with. We were worried at first years ago. Are we taking their business from them a little bit right? Because they have a lot of folks who are focused on that. But what they found is they're solving problems faster. But they're just doing the time. More problems, right? There's that there's this. Projects are growing. >>What I love about your business model is that the trend that we're covering is it's not I t setting the pace of projects. It's the projects themselves that then dictate to the cloud scale. And so I think you guys are tipping on this new we call Cloud to point out, which is it's completely flipped around anyone. If it's a mission based organization or for profit, there's a project to do something valid. You That's right. I t is just has to support it, not dictate terms. So this is a whole different level of thinking. Having the SAS business model >>well and layer in the usability of the product, right? The interface We go after citizen integrators lines of business. I can go build something for my marketing text back that's powerful, >>and the veterans examples of great one of the key No. Two people have to get done and they make a difference.
