>>mhm. Welcome back to Boston. This is the cubes coverage of the Red Hat Summit 2022. The first Red Hat Summit we've done face to face in at least two years. 2019 was our last one. We're kind of rounding the far turn, you know, coming up for the home stretch. My name is Dave Valentin here with Paul Gillon. A J monger is here is a senior director of Iot. The Iot group for developer solutions and engineering at Intel. AJ, thanks for coming on the Cube. Thank you so much. We heard your colleague this morning and the keynote talking about the Dev Cloud. I feel like I need a Dev Cloud. What's it all about? >>So, um, we've been, uh, working with developers and the ecosystem for a long time, trying to build edge solutions. A lot of time people think about it. Solutions as, like, just computer the edge. But what really it is is you've got to have some component of the cloud. There is a network, and there is edge and edge is complicated because of the variety of devices that you need. And when you're building a solution, you got to figure out, like, where am I going to push the computer? How much of the computer I'm going to run in the cloud? How much of the computer? I'm gonna push it at the network and how much I need to run it at the edge. A lot of times what happens for developers is they don't have one environment where all of the three come together. And so what we said is, um, today the way it works is you have all these edge devices that customers by the instal, they set it up and they try to do all of that. And then they have a cloud environment they do to their development. And then they figure out how all of this comes together. And all of these things are only when they are integrating it at the customer at the solution space is when they try to do it. So what we did is we took all of these edge devices, put it in the cloud and gave one environment for cloud to the edge. Very good to your complete solution. >>Essentially simulates. >>No, it's not >>simulating span. So the cloud spans the cloud, the centralised cloud out to the edge. You >>know, what we did is we took all of these edge devices that will theoretically get deployed at the edge like we took all these variety of devices and putting it put it in a cloud environment. So these are non rack mountable devices that you can buy in the market today that you just have, like, we have about 500 devices in the cloud that you have from atom to call allusions to F. P. G s to head studio cards to graphics. All of these devices are available to you. So in one environment you have, like, you can connect to any of the cloud the hyper scholars, you could connect to any of these network devices. You can define your network topology. You could bring in any of your sources that is sitting in the gate repository or docker containers that may be sitting somewhere in a cloud environment, or it could be sitting on a docker hub. You can pull all of these things together, and we give you one place where you can build it where you can test it. You can performance benchmark it so you can know when you're actually going to the field to deploy it. What type of sizing you need. So >>let me show you, understand? If I want to test, uh, an actual edge device using 100 gig Ethernet versus an Mpls versus the five G, you can do all that without virtualizing. >>So all the H devices are there today, and the network part of it, we are building with red hat together where we are putting everything on this environment. So the network part of it is not quite yet solved, but that's what we want to solve. But the goal is here is you can let's say you have five cameras or you have 50 cameras with different type of resolutions. You want to do some ai inference type of workloads at the edge. What type of compute you need, what type of memory you need, How many devices do you need and where do you want to push the data? Because security is very important at the edge. So you gotta really figure out like I've got to secure the data on flight. I want to secure the data at Brest, and how do you do the governance of it. How do you kind of do service governance? So that all the services different containers that are running on the edge device, They're behaving well. You don't have one container hogging up all the memory or hogging up all the compute, or you don't have, like, certain points in the day. You might have priority for certain containers. So all of these mortals, where do you run it? So we have an environment that you could run all of that. >>Okay, so take that example of AI influencing at the edge. So I've got an edge device and I've developed an application, and I'm going to say Okay, I want you to do the AI influencing in real time. You got something? They become some kind of streaming data coming in, and I want you to persist, uh, every hour on the hour. I want to save that time stamp. Or if the if some event, if a deer runs across the headlights, I want you to persist that day to send that back to the cloud and you can develop that tested, benchmark >>it right, and then you can say that. Okay, look in this environment I have, like, five cameras, like at different angles, and you want to kind of try it out. And what we have is a product which is into, um, open vino, which is like an open source product, which does all of the optimizations you need for age in France. So you develop the like to recognise the deer in your example. I developed the training model somewhere in the cloud. Okay, so I have, like, I developed with all of the things have annotated the different video streams. And I know that I'm recognising a deer now. Okay, so now you need to figure out Like when the deer is coming and you want to immediately take an action. You don't want to send all of your video streams to the cloud. It's too expensive. Bandwidth costs a lot. So you want to compute that inference at the edge? Okay. In order to do that inference at the edge, you need some environment. You should be able to do it. And to build that solution What type of age device do you really need? What type of compute you need? How many cameras are you computing it? What different things you're not only recognising a deer, probably recognising some other objects could do all of that. In fact, one of the things happened was I took my nephew to San Diego Zoo and he was very disappointed that he couldn't see the chimpanzees. Uh, that was there, right, the gorillas and other things. So he was very sad. So I said, All right, there should be a better way. I saw, like there was a stream of the camera feed that was there. So what we did is we did an edge in friends and we did some logic to say, At this time of the day, the gorillas get fed, so there's likelihood of you actually seeing the gorilla is very high. So you just go at that point and so that you see >>it, you >>capture, That's what you do, and you want to develop that entire solution. It's based on whether, based on other factors, you need to bring all of these services together and build a solution, and we offer an environment that allows you to do it. Will >>you customise the the edge configuration for the for the developer If if they want 50 cameras. That's not You don't have 50 cameras available, right? >>It's all cameras. What we do is we have a streaming capability that we support so you can upload all your videos. And you can say I want to now simulate 50 streams. Want to simulate 30 streams? Or I want to do this right? Or just like two or three videos that you want to just pull in. And you want to be able to do the infant simultaneously, running different algorithms at the edge. All of that is supported, and the bigger challenge at the edge is developing. Solution is fine. And now when you go to actual deployment and post deployment monitoring, maintenance, make sure that you're like managing it. It's very complicated. What we have seen is over 50% 51% to be precise of developers are developed some kind of a cloud native applications recently, right? So that we believe that if you bring that type of a cloud native development model to the edge, then you're scaling problem. Your maintenance problem, you're like, how do you actually deploy it? All of these challenges can be better managed, Um, and if you run all of that is an orchestration later on kubernetes and we run everything on top of open shift, so you have a deployment ready solution already there it's everything is containerised everything. You have it as health charged Dr Composed. You have all their you have tested and in this environment, and now you go take that to the deployment. And if it is there on any standard kubernetes environment or in an open ship, you can just straight away deploy your application. >>What's that edge architecture looked like? What's Intel's and red hats philosophy around? You know what's programmable and it's different. I know you can run a S, a p a data centre. You guys got that covered? What's the edge look like? What's that architecture of silicon middleware? Describe that for us. >>So at the edge, you think about it, right? It can run traditional, Uh, in an industrial PC. You have a lot of Windows environment. You have a lot of the next. They're now in a in an edge environment. Quite a few of these devices. I'm not talking about Farage where there are tiny micro controllers and these devices I'm talking about those devices that connect to these forage devices. Collect the data. Do some analytics do some compute that type of thing. You have foraged devices. Could be a camera. Could be a temperature sensor. Could be like a weighing scale. Could be anything. It could be that forage and then all of that data instead of pushing all the data to the cloud. In order for you to do the analysis, you're going to have some type of an edge set of devices where it is collecting all this data, doing some decisions that's close to the data. You're making some analysis there, all of that stuff, right? So you need some analysis tools, you need certain other things. And let's say that you want to run like, UH, average costs or rail or any of these operating systems at the edge. Then you have an ability for you to manage all of that. Using a control note, the control node can also sit at the edge. In some cases, like in a smart factory, you have a little data centre in a smart factory or even in a retail >>store >>behind a closet. You have, like a bunch of devices that are sitting there, correct. And those devices all can be managed and clustered in an environment. So now the question is, how do you deploy applications to that edge? How do you collect all the data that is sitting through the camera? Other sensors and you're processing it close to where the data is being generated make immediate decisions. So the architecture would look like you have some club which does some management of this age devices management of this application, some type of control. You have some network because you need to connect to that. Then you have the whole plethora of edge, starting from an hybrid environment where you have an entire, like a mini data centre sitting at the edge. Or it could be one or two of these devices that are just collecting data from these sensors and processing it that is the heart of the other challenge. The architecture varies from different verticals, like from smart cities to retail to healthcare to industrial. They have all these different variations. They need to worry about these, uh, different environments they are going to operate under, uh, they have different regulations that they have to look into different security protocols that they need to follow. So your solution? Maybe it is just recognising people and identifying if they are wearing a helmet or a coal mine, right, whether they are wearing a safety gear equipment or not, that solution versus you are like driving in a traffic in a bike, and you, for safety reasons. We want to identify the person is wearing a helmet or not. Very different use cases, very different environments, different ways in which you are operating. But that is where the developer needs to have. Similar algorithms are used, by the way, but how you deploy it very, quite a bit. >>But the Dev Cloud make sure I understand it. You talked about like a retail store, a great example. But that's a general purpose infrastructure that's now customised through software for that retail environment. Same thing with Telco. Same thing with the smart factory, you said, not the far edge, right, but that's coming in the future. Or is that well, that >>extends far edge, putting everything in one cloud environment. We did it right. In fact, I put some cameras on some like ipads and laptops, and we could stream different videos did all of that in a data centre is a boring environment, right? What are you going to see? A bunch of racks and service, So putting far edge devices there didn't make sense. So what we did is you could just have an easy ability for you to stream or connect or a Plourde This far edge data that gets generated at the far edge. Like, say, time series data like you can take some of the time series data. Some of the sensor data are mostly camera data videos. So you upload those videos and that is as good as your streaming those videos. Right? And that means you are generating that data. And then you're developing your solution with the assumption that the camera is observing whatever is going on. And then you do your age inference and you optimise it. You make sure that you size it, and then you have a complete solution. >>Are you supporting all manner of microprocessors at the edge, including non intel? >>Um, today it is all intel, but the plan, because we are really promoting the whole open ecosystem and things like that in the future. Yes, that is really talking about it, so we want to be able to do that in the future. But today it's been like a lot of the we were trying to address the customers that we are serving today. We needed an environment where they could do all of this, for example, and what circumstances would use I five versus i nine versus putting an algorithm on using a graphics integrated graphics versus running it on a CPU or running it on a neural computer stick. It's hard, right? You need to buy all those devices you need to experiment your solutions on all of that. It's hard. So having everything available in one environment, you could compare and contrast to see what type of a vocal or makes best sense. But it's not >>just x 86 x 86 your portfolio >>portfolio of F. P. G s of graphics of like we have all what intel supports today and in future, we would want to open it up. So how >>do developers get access to this cloud? >>It is all free. You just have to go sign up and register and, uh, you get access to it. It is difficult dot intel dot com You go there, and the container playground is all available for free for developers to get access to it. And you can bring in container workloads there, or even bare metal workloads. Um, and, uh, yes, all of it is available for you >>need to reserve the endpoint devices. >>Comment. That is where it is. An interesting technology. >>Govern this. Correct. >>So what we did was we built a kind of a queuing system. Okay, So, schedule, er so you develop your application in a controlled north, and only you need the edge device when you're scheduling that workload. Okay, so we have this scheduling systems, like we use Kafka and other technologies to do the scheduling in the container workload environment, which are all the optimised operators that are available in an open shift, um, environment. So we regard those operators. Were we installed it. So what happens is you take your work, lord, and you run it. Let's say on an I seven device, when you're running that workload and I summon device, that device is dedicated to you. Okay, So and we've instrumented each of these devices with telemetry so we could see at the point your workload is running on that particular device. What is the memory looking like power looking like How hard is the device running? What is a compute looking like? So we capture all that metrics. Then what you do is you take it and run it on a 99 or run it on a graphic, so can't run it on an F p g a. Then you compare and contrast. And you say Huh? Okay for this particular work, Lord, this device makes best sense. In some cases, I'll tell you. Right, Uh, developers have come back and told me I don't need a bigger process that I need bigger memory. >>Yeah, sure, >>right. And some cases they've said, Look, I have I want to prioritise accuracy over performance because if you're in a healthcare setting, accuracy is more important. In some cases, they have optimised it for the size of the device because it needs to fit in the right environment in the right place. So every use case where you optimise is up to the solution up to the developer, and we give you an ability for you to do that kind >>of folks are you seeing? You got hardware developers, you get software developers are right, people coming in. And >>we have a lot of system integrators. We have enterprises that are coming in. We are seeing a lot of, uh, software solution developers, independent software developers. We also have a lot of students are coming in free environment for them to kind of play with in sort of them having to buy all of these devices. We're seeing those people. Um I mean, we are pulling through a lot of developers in this environment currently, and, uh, we're getting, of course, feedback from the developers. We are just getting started here. We are continuing to improve our capabilities. We are adding, like, virtualisation capabilities. We are working very closely with red hat to kind of showcase all the goodness that's coming out of red hat, open shift and other innovations. Right? We heard, uh, like, you know, in one of the open shift sessions, they're talking about micro shifts. They're talking about hyper shift, the talking about a lot of these innovations, operators, everything that is coming together. But where do developers play with all of this? If you spend half your time trying to configure it, instal it and buy the hardware, Trying to figure it out. You lose patience. What we have time, you lose time. What is time and it's complicated, right? How do you set up? Especially when you involve cloud. It has network. It has got the edge. You need all of that right? Set up. So what we have done is we've set up everything for you. You just come in. And by the way, not only just that what we realised is when you go talk to customers, they don't want to listen to all our optimizations processors and all that. They want to say that I am here to solve my retail problem. I want to count the people coming into my store, right. I want to see that if there is any spills that I recognise and I want to go clean it up before a customer complaints about it or I have a brain tumour segmentation where I want to identify if the tumour is malignant or not, right and I want to telehealth solutions. So they're really talking about these use cases that are talking about all these things. So What we did is we build many of these use cases by talking to customers. We open sourced it and made it available on Death Cloud for developers to use as a starting point so that they have this retail starting point or they have this healthcare starting point. All these use cases so that they have all the court we have showed them how to contain arise it. The biggest problem is developers still don't know at the edge how to bring a legacy application and make it cloud native. So they just wrap it all into one doctor and they say, OK, now I'm containerised got a lot more to do. So we tell them how to do it, right? So we train these developers, we give them an opportunity to experiment with all these use cases so that they get closer and closer to what the customer solutions need to be. >>Yeah, we saw that a lot with the early cloud where they wrapped their legacy apps in a container, shove it into the cloud. Say it's really hosting a legacy. Apps is all it was. It wasn't It didn't take advantage of the cloud. Never Now people come around. It sounds like a great developer. Free resource. >>Mhm Yeah, this is Dave valentin. I'd like to welcome you back to the cubes coverage of couch base connect online with the theme of this event is modernized now and one of the big announcements is Capella which of course as you all undoubtedly know is the brightest star in the constellation Auriga, which is latin for charioteer, yep, you can find that in the constellation of that constellation of the night sky in late february, early March in the northern hemisphere. So with that little tidbit, I'd like to welcome in scott Anderson to the cube, who is the senior vice president of product management and business operations. That couch base scott welcome. Good to see you. >>Thank you very much. Thanks for having me. >>That's our pleasure. So you've launched couch based cappella if I understand correctly, it's built on couch based server seven which he launched just a few months ago in the middle of the summer. Can you give us an overview of Capella? >>Yeah, absolutely. So couch based Capellas are fully managed databases. Service for enterprise applications. One of the goals of launching Capella and our databases is service offering that we just announced today is about increasing the accessibility of couch base so it's about making it easy for a developer or an enterprise to get up and running in just a few clicks in a couple of minutes Um and about making it more affordable and accessible through the development phase through the test phase, the production phase. So really it's about ease of use having the right offerings aligned to the phase of development that customers in and eventually into the production of their enterprise application leveraging capella and couch based Server seven. >>So let me ask you, I I went pretty deep with ravi on the, on the technical side and I want to understand what makes Capella different from some of the competitive offerings. Is it the sort of the fundamentals that I learned from Ravi about how you guys have have have really done an awesome focus on on on sequel but been able to maintain acid compliance deal with distributed architectural challenges and then bringing that over to database as a service. Is that the fundamental, what are some of the other differentiators? >>Yeah, that that is the fundamental, we have an amazing platform that Roddy and our core engineering team built and we've talked about that and I think Robbie mentioned that the ease of sequel and applying that to a documented oriented database, then combining some of those capabilities with the ease of use, the ability that you can get up and running, signing up for our free trial couple minutes later you've got a database endpoint that is fully managed by couch base. And so we're doing the monitoring, we're doing alerting, we have calls to action based off what events are occurring within the database environment, ensuring it's always available as well as doing kind of the mundane tasks of backup and recovery, uh scaling the environment, upgrades and so forth. So it's really about ease of use, making it um leveraging are incredibly robust, broad platform um and then making that in different consumable model for our customers and developers and getting started really easily. The other thing that we have done is really leverage the best practices over the last 10 or 11 years of some of the largest enterprises in the world using couch based for the mission critical applications. So we've codified those best practices and that's how we keep that service, high performance, always on highly available. And that's one of the core value propositions that were able to bring with Capella. It's really about management capability, global visibility of your clusters coupled with what we believe is the best no sequel database in the marketplace today. >>What about what about cost, total cost of ownership as you scale a lot of times when you scale out, you get dis economies of scale, it's kind of like, you know, you get that negative curve, uh what are you seeing? >>Yeah, we've done a third party benchmark studies which have proven out how we are able to literally scale the environment uh and continue on that curve as you add notes, you're getting that incremental performance that you would expect. The other thing that we do that's really unique within couch bases are multidimensional scaling and this allows you to place our services, things like data index, query, full text search indexes and analytics, you can co locate those on single nodes within a cluster or you can have dedicated notes for each one of those services. The reason that is important is you get work line isolation for those specific services within our cluster. The other thing that you can do is you can match the compute infrastructure to the needs of each one of those services. So some services like query are much more core, compute intensive and that allows you to have a specific instance type that is optimized for that, reducing your costs, indexes where you want very fast performance, you may want to have a higher amount of memory relative to the number of course. So that ability to mix and match the infrastructure with an existing cluster allows us to lower overall costs. That coupled with their blazing fast performance with our in memory architecture allows people to get incredible performance at scale. Um, what we've proven out in the study that I mentioned earlier is we have that linear scalability and you're able to do more for less at the end of the day, you're getting more operations per second per dollar if you want to use that as a metric. >>Got it. Thank you for that. What do customers need to think about when they want to get started with Capela? How difficult is it for people to jump in? >>It is incredibly simple. It's as simple as going to couch base dot com clicking on start your free trial, You're going to that free trial, you provide a minimal set of information for us and it's literally a few clicks and you're going to have a database endpoint within three minutes and that's really been a foundation of, of what we've been focused on over the last 6-9 months is removing any friction we can in the process because our goal is to give a tremendous user experience and get people up and running as quickly as possible. So we're really, really proud of that. And then from a paid offering perspective, we have a number of offerings which are really aligned to the needs of each customer, some individuals who want a larger cluster and they want to be able to pay for that. We've optimized service levels around that in terms of level support and the features that we think are appropriate for a dev cycle, a test cycle and then into production and lastly we will be announcing a number of promotional starter pack bundles, really trying to couple the overall service that we have with Capella with some of our expertise, so helping new users get up and running in terms of things like index definitions, what's the best way to do document design and schema within within couch base. Our end goal is to match these services and bundles with the life cycle of application development. So in my development phase what's the offering for me as I move for production readiness, what services capabilities I need and then production and the ongoing if I expand my use. So we've been really focused on, how do we get people up up and running as quickly as possible and how do we get them to production as quickly as possible at the lowest total cost? >>That's nice. That's a nice accelerant for customers. Um, so as you heard upfront, I did a little research about the name Capella. How did you choose it and why? >>Well, one thing I learned early in my career is naming is not a strong suit of mine. I leave that to John or our chief marketing officer in the overall team. Um, we all have opinions, but I trust John and we went through, I think it was over 60 names, seven rounds of debate to come up with capella, but we want to name of strength. We like the alliteration couch, basic capella together. Um, one of the little facts may have tipped it over is I believe in latin, it means little goats. So we kind of played from the barriers. Always think to jerry rice goat, greatest of all time. So that was a nice play on that also. You're watching the cube we're here with David Harvey is the vice president of strategic alliances at VM. David. Good to see you. How you doing? >>I'm well thanks David yourself you've been good, >>yep. Doing great thank you. Hey you've heard the term follow the money, we're gonna follow the data. How >>about right >>So HP and wien you're celebrating a 10 year milestone in your alliance. That's a lot of good parties at at the HP discover shows. And uh of course we miss miss being face to face this year but next year we'll be back rocket but uh talk a little bit about what that milestone means to you. >>Yeah Thanks. Dave. And you're right. It is a milestone. I mean when you look at alliances or partnerships overall, it's crazy that you can maintain this depth of partnership is depth of relationship and this success for 10 years. I mean H. P. Was our number one alliance that we started working with when we started being X Number of years ago. Um and the reason for that was that we really came together from the very start with a philosophy about the approach we wanted to provide to the customer and also the synergy of technology. Um and 10 years is a long time. I mean how many alliances that you've seen in the industry Um that have managed to maintain for 10 years and we're stronger than ever as we come into this point and that's amazing. So from that point of view we're really excited for this 10 year milestone. We're really pleased that the investment from both sides as maintained and grown through that time period. Um And as you said it's a shame we're not doing this in person but this is a great event for us and that's why we're so proud to be top sponsor this year and supporting the charge for this government. >>Well, congratulations on that milestone immunity. So often when I talk to folks that are in your role, they'll complain and yeah, we do it. We have a lot of numbers, but not a lot of hard y and not a lot of fruitful partnerships and they'll do barney deals. I love you, you love me, you will do a press release but it's not driving and I happen to know that the HPV in relationship is very productive and I think, you know, one of the key moves when when HP split itself into it took its competitive data protective product that sold that off and then that just opened up a whole new opportunity for the relationships. It was a game changer. So but looking back, what do you think was the meaningful sort of investment that the alliance has really made together? >>Yeah, great question. And it's a really cheesy answer, but it's it's one of those very rare scenarios, where is the truth and his death? You know, the depth of discussion from the very start was really what built that foundation, We were the launch back up part of the three part, um, and every release team has done since then has had a key HP component to it. And more importantly, as you said as HP has evolved through that period, the divestiture and the overall movement of their portfolio. We've continued to listen to each other on what is important to both parties. But while that's great from the relationship and the alliance, the one thing that's never changed is the response of the customer to saying, not only have you integrated together on technology, you've unified your message, you provide a supply chain that is meaningful to my business by simplifying and providing value and you continue to evolve. You continue to adjust and move as you've gone through the time period in our needs have changed. I mean we started with servers, we worked with storage, we're with green labour? S moral like all across that portfolio. We found a way to continue to listen to each other and what's important and that's been killed. >>So what are the waves that you're you're surfing here, You put on the binoculars and look forward what are going to be the most important areas that you guys invest in and focus on in the future? >>Yeah. Great question. I mean we're focused on three things for the for the medium to short term here and looking at there is rapidly recovering your data. You know, the news at the moment is exploding related to issues companies are having, which is so unfortunate and recovering data quickly. It's an economic component is not just about the ability to do it fast, it's about the fact that the quicker you bring data back in this circumstance where you have to, the better it is for your bottom line. We also simplify that data protection. And the reason for that is that if you look at the diversity of the portfolio, HP has you want unification regardless of what products you're buying from HP, you want to make sure that you're working with solutions that work with all of those different parts of it. As I mentioned, service storage as moral Green Lake et cetera. And so that simplification of data protection is huge. And finally it's getting your data protection as a service. We've been working with Green Lake for a good number of years now and it's one of the fastest growing areas of our partnership. But if you bring those three things together, the customers are deciding that modern data protection needs, that they have, they're looking at the hybrid world, they're looking at all parts of the portfolio from the thought leaders, they work with specifically HP and they're wanting to make sure that they've got that unification moving forward and that whatever decisions they make with the infrastructure, the underlying protection of their data continues to be a core component that they can evolve with as they move their needs forward. >>We'll talk about that speedy recovery. There's so much in the news today, we're seeing all this, all this ransomware. I mean it's bringing down organizations, it's affecting supply chains all over the world very concerning. And there's two dimensions here. One is the speed to recover. We can all relate when, you know, when your laptop freezes like, oh, I gotta reboot and it takes five minutes and you're frustrated. Imagine your whole business, you know, it takes half a day to recover. That's huge. The other dimension, of course, is how much data you you lose in that recovery and you try to compress that RP. Oh right. Is as tight as possible. And that's the other sort of value that that customers look for from a combination of HPV and VM. So, but I want to ask you, so we're here at HP covering HP discover you can't talk about hB without getting a kool aid injection of Green Lake and as a service. And how are you guys sort of addressing those as a service needs for today's customers? >>Yeah, it's a great question. And by the way kudos, you can be a salesperson force with our pos and all those keywords. I love it. But what I would say overall is that when you look at the changing way customers are spending, um it depends on where they're structuring their financial desires, whether it's the Capex world, the optics world etcetera. And Green Led by its nature allows you to look at having the control of a physical component. But having the economic structure of in some respects pay as you go when you look at it in that component. And so you're avoiding that capital investment concern. But you're getting the power and the strength of the management component as well. And that's what's really important. I mean when you look at overall movement, Yes, you did a really interesting report recently and they're saying that spending on data center protection is going to grow 50% this year in 2021. Looking at improving that level of key component for their data centers as they go through that modernization. And so from that point of view, what we're seeing and this is applicable for HP more than anybody else. Is that the speed that they came out with the Green Lake a number of years ago allowed customers, especially the big enterprises, we're having a massive amount of success together, enabled them to decide the economic buying model that they wanted and to combine that with the best of breed service and management and control. So from our point of view, you know, that's something we've been investing within a long period of time now, not only on the solutions but also on how we go to market together. Our field team is working very closely with their field team within Green Lake to be there so that the customer can utilize it as a tool and not feel like they're having a different conversation because we're so baked in with the rest of the organization. So from our point of view, Green Lake is key to how things are moving forward and other things that the storage departments doing as well as they look at some of their new ways with their announcements we've, they've recently made with buying down on demand and new products they're having. So it's allowing the customer to have that choice and from us, it forms a core component of how we're working together. However you decide you want to consume the HP portfolio. You should have the ability for us to seamlessly work with it. And to your point, that's why that growth rate on our oi but more importantly on the revenue and the amount of growth of our customers year over year have really embraced that synchronization together. >>David, I think of your thoughts on containers. Generally I want to I want to talk about the cast and acquisition specifically but I want to ask about it in the context of the two things. One is just kind of the overall where you see that going and and how you're working with H. P. E. On that. But the other is as it relates to two of the most vexing problems for I. T. Folks in the past have been been security and data protection and their their their adjacency is you're not a security company but it's a kind of a cousin if you will. And and both of those areas have always been an afterthought after you get snake bitten, you close the barn door kind of thing and it's a bolt on. Okay. I got my application it's all hard and I got my database and ready to go, oh hey how do we back this thing up as an afterthought when I think containers and and and I think kubernetes I think developers I think infrastructure as code and now you're designing in security and data protection focusing on the ladder obviously. How does the cast and acquisition and what H. P. S doing on containers fit into that context and how do you see it evolving overall? >>Yeah that's a great question and there's two pastoring. I mean if you look at the way that HP moves to market and you look at the themes and the focus they've had now for the last three plus years with regard to that data center transformation and the movement and modernization of it. This has been a part of it But as you exactly said, this is a new type of context point has come in. Obviously we acquired casting as you alluded to early in 2020 because for us we absolutely believe that this is a core component righty. And you raised the point perfectly there Dave it used to be a component after you're snakebit, it's not today. I mean you alluded to it with regard to what's going on in the news over the last few weeks or so. It's nowhere near an afterthought Now it's a component that's built in from the start and that's why when you look at some of those studies about the spend in this area overall it isn't an afterthought anymore but I agree with you, it was when you look back a number of years and so for us casting build a very key area of our portfolio but it also allowed us with HP to double down on another area of investment for themselves. Esmeralda is a key play for HP moving forward. You can get casting on the Admiral marketplace and that's another example, as I was saying, it doesn't matter how you keep evolving your relationship with HP, how you keep drawing down from the portfolio, you want to make sure that the data protection, you've got the simplified data protection across all of these areas, is there from the start? And what we're finding is with Greenfield sites, with new applications with new deployments where containers kubernetes really comes into play. They are looking to buy it together at the start so that they can focus on learning, acquiring deploying and really maximizing the benefit of kubernetes and not worry about that snakebite component you talked about. So for us, you know, it supports our portfolio and it allows us to stay with HP as they continue to evolve their strategy. >>That SG Stat of 50% growth in data protection is pretty amazing and it's funny, I think back to the insight acquisition uh VM and you know, conventional wisdom would have said, oh wow, what a bummer. They bought this thing right before a global pandemic in an economic downturn. It's but in this, in your businesses like real estate with pre pandemic post pandemic evaluation should be skyrocketing is as a function of of the heightened focus on digital and security and data protection. So it's really an exciting time. Um if I were to ask you this question 10 years ago where where HP envy emceeing joint success in the marketplace? It would have been, well of course, virtualization, it's all the >>rage. Where >>are you seeing success today? >>And that's a great question and it's interesting you talk about it with the pandemic. I'll be honest, the last recession us that I was in the digital messaging market and at that point when economies get tight, everybody invest in cheaper types of marketing, which is digital messaging. Now we've got a pandemic and guess what, everybody is looking at this area of the market again with protection. And I think to your point, it's a great Russian. What we're finding is the word hybrid and it's it's a well overplayed term, but it's reality of the scenario. You know, we came through and started our journey of being here in the virtual world, but we moved into the physical and that's where we've been having so much success with HP as well. And now as we move towards that cloud world, um and to a degree, the application world with office 365 etcetera, what you're seeing is that hybrid need. We're seeing that the large enterprises that have relied on HP for so many years are also looking for that ubiquitous data protection layer. And because we have it so well baked into all the different parts of the portfolio, it's a seamless ability to just continue to exp fan utilization of the portfolio. So from our point of view, we're seeing fantastic against bright success. We're seeing it in some of these verticals like medical, like financial, the big corcoran pillars of society is related to the economic and industrial models. We're seeing those areas come on board, but we're also seeing people look at what I would classify as some of the Greenfield projects and that's a different viewpoint because if you look back at the history of HP as well, they were fantastic provider for the foundation of the core business. Now, what we're finding is that coming to HP envy and saying, hey, new areas Greenfield want to start fresh with a new approach, less of the legacy concern I've had before. How can we look at these new projects I'm working on. So we're seeing in the enterprise, we're seeing in what I would classify as traditional type of verticals and now we're starting to see that acceleration in some of these Greenfield projects, which is key. And that's something we've really, really enjoyed. And last part I'd say on that one as well is from a geographic basis. We are seeing all of our regions come up. Um, and the reason why that's important is sometimes you see alliances that have success in one market or one area, We're seeing the year over year growth in a mere be faster than we've ever seen. We're seeing are America's growth growth year over year and Asia is continuing to explode for us together. And so from that point of view, I think what that's telling us is that the customers resonate on what we're producing together. And so from that point of view, we're very ubiquitous in our level of value to customers and we're hoping to carry that on moving forward. >>Well, it's two trusted brands. Obviously, you know, the Hewlett Packard enterprise name and that stands out and is no longer start up with a funny name is >>you're proven >>In the marketplace, you just had a major release. I think it was V- 11. I'm not great the greatest products but um, earlier this year, wondering how that impacted the alliance? Was that fit? >>Yeah. Great question. And to your point, some people still have trouble with the name, but overall you're right, we do tend to find that we're in a good spot nowadays with regards to recognition and I D. C. Just released some fantastic statistics on growth and another record breaking year for being both from the sequential growth and the year over year growth for the second half of 2020. Moving us up into the number two position for the first time, which again, is a testament to the success were also having with HP and when you look at what happened on V 11, because as I mentioned at the start of this discussion, every one of our major releases has had HPV baked into it. And V 11 was a big release for us. There was a lot of pent up development work we were trying to get done and what we focused on with this again, especially for the enterprise, was looking at the HP portfolio and looking at faster speeds, faster speeds, have an economic value. We increased our speed and performance with HP primera, we increase it with HP nimble. We also made a really significant when we're working with HP store. Once we did a lot of evolution on that for a huge space savings, which together really values the customer and then finally where we've also found the customers asked for a lot of development from us together is consolidated with an all in one backup type of approach with the HP Apollo series. So from that point of view, we focused on the experience of the customer because the integrations are so solid. We're now fine tuning to increase that ri for the customer and V 11 was a big component of that, what I >>love about Wien David. So I used to be an I. D. C. For years and you just mentioned that the study that came out and you're number two and >>I've been talking a lot of your >>executives recently, you've, you've, you've thrown out that stand a lot number two. Number two. But, but when I was in to see everybody wanted to be number one at something, so you could say, oh, hey, we're number one backup company with the green logo. Hey, we're number one, >>but you're not >>doing that. And I'm joking about the green logo, but you actually are the number one. I think I'm correct in saying this, the number one pure play and back up in data protection and you don't, you don't stand up on that mantle. And I was asking some executives why? And you're like, well, no, because we want to be number one, that's what, that's our objective. You know, we're not gonna claim number one now until we get to number one and we'll claim real number one. So I like that about you guys. You, you set the mark the mark high. But so I love that. Um, >>I appreciate it. Yeah. How should >>people be thinking about the future of your relationship with HP the rest of this year and beyond? >>Yeah, great question. And I do really do appreciate that comment because it's an easy one to sort of pick up on it. And it comes down to the attitude. It comes down to our attitude with regards to there's nothing wrong with fight. There's nothing wrong with making sure you continue to have a north star that you never want to stop getting too. And I think that's a testament to the development of the products and, and overall our attitude to working in the field and working with our alliances. And when you look about, when you ask the question, excuse me. Dave about, you know, where do we see the HP envy moving forward, consistency, consistency is key for us for 10 years. We've been consistent in providing value And we want to continue doing that for another 10 years moving forward. And as we evolve our portfolio and you look at our Act two and as you talked about some of the things you talk to are the executives about. When you look at, we're moving forward, we're doing that in conjunction and we believe as you move forward with regards to some of the things HPR Do we want that consistency of integration? We want that consistency of experience to the customer. We want that consistency of listening and developing our engineering resources together to address that need. And again, it sounds like a really obvious answer and it is, but the difference on the back of this one, to be honest with you, Davis, we proved this again and again and again. And as you look at the Truman data protection solution and you do it in conjunction with HP, it's one of those things where we're so proud to make sure we keep working hard together and pushing each other to be better for our customers, that we're really excited about how it moves forwards. Were also, and again, we're not going into any juicy secrets here, but I wouldn't be surprised if V 12 that comes here in the, in the future also has another little nice street related to HPV as well. So from that point of view, um, you should have consistency, you should have trust and you should be excited about the fact that the investment and the joint alliance is stronger than it's ever been. >>Well, you guys are setting the marks, uh, certainly the competitive landscape gets tougher and tougher, but you guys are, are leading, you're moving fast, you get a great product to move at the speed, the speed you're, you are and growing at the pace you are for a billion dollar company is impressive. We have a lot of numbers, but not a lot of marijuana and not a lot of fruitful partnerships and they'll do barney deals. I love you, you love me, you will do a press release, but it's not driving and I happen to know that the HPV in relationship is very productive and I think, you know, one of the key moves when when HP split itself into it took its, you know, competitive data protective product that sold that off and then that just opened up a whole new opportunity for the relationships and was a game changer. So but looking back, what do you think was the meaningful sort of investment that the alliance has really made together? >>Yeah, great question. >>And it's a really >>cheesy answer, but it's, it's one of those very rare scenarios, where is the truth and his death? You know, the depth of discussion from the very start was really what >>Built that foundation, we were the launch back up part of the three >>part, um, and every release team has done since then has had a key HP component to it. And more importantly, as you said, as HP has evolved through that period, the divestiture and >>the overall movement of their portfolio. >>We've continued to listen to each other on what >>is important to both parties. But while that's great from the relationship and the alliance, >>the one thing that's never changed is the response of the customer to saying, not only have you integrated together on technology, you've unified your message, you provide a supply chain that is meaningful to my business by simplifying and providing value and you continue to evolve. You continue to adjust and move as you've gone through the time period and our needs have changed. I mean we started with servers, we worked with storage, we're with green lake esmeralda like all across that portfolio. We found a way to continue to listen to each other and what's important and that's been q. >>So what are the waves that you're, you're surfing here, You put on the binoculars and look forward. What are going to be the most important areas that you guys invest in and focus on in the future? >>Yeah, great question. I mean we're focused on three things for the, for the medium to short term here and looking at there is rapidly recovering your data. You know, the news at the moment is exploding related to issues companies are having, which is so unfortunate and recovering data quickly. It's an economic component is not just about the ability to do it fast, it's about the fact that the quicker you bring data back in this circumstance where you have to, the better it is for your bottom line. We also simplify that data protection and the reason for that is that if you look at the diversity of the portfolio HP has, you want unification regardless of what products you're buying from HP, you want to make sure that you're working with solutions that work with all of those different parts of it. As I mentioned, service storage as moral Green Lake et cetera. And so that simplification of data protection is huge. And finally it's getting your data protection as a service. We've been working with Green Lake for a good number of years now and it's one of the fastest growing areas of our partnership. But if you bring those three things together, the customers are deciding that modern data protection needs that they have, they're looking at the hybrid world, they're looking at all parts of the portfolio from the thought leaders, they work with specifically HP and they're wanting to make sure that they've got that unification moving >>forward and that whatever >>decisions they make with the infrastructure, the underlying protection of their data continues to be a core component that they can evolve with as they move their needs forward. >>You talk about that speedy recovery, there's so much in the news today, we're seeing all this, all this ransomware, I mean it's bringing down organizations, it's affecting supply chains all over the world very concerning. And there's two dimensions here. One is the speed to recover. We can all relate, you know, when your laptop freezes like, oh, I gotta reboot and it takes five minutes and you're frustrated. Imagine your whole business, you know, it takes half a day to recover. That's huge. The other dimension, of course, is how much data you lose in that recovery and you try to compress that arpeggio right is to so as tight as possible. And that's the other sort of value that that customers look for from a combination of HP envy them. So, but I want to ask you so we're here at HP covering HP discover you can't talk about hB without getting a kool aid injection of Green Lake and as a service. And we're how are you guys sort of addressing those as a service needs for today's customers? >>Yeah, it's a great question. And by the way, kudos, you can be a salesperson force with our pos and all those keywords. I love it. But what I would say overall is that when you look at the changing way customers are spending, um it depends on where they're structuring their financial desires, whether it's the Capex world, the optics world etcetera. And Green Led by its nature allows you to look at having the control of a physical component. But having the economic structure of in some respects pay as you go when you look at it in that component. And so you're avoiding that capital investment concern. But you're getting the power and the strength of the management component as well. And that's what's really important. I mean when you look at overall movement. S you did a really interesting report recently and they're saying that spending on data center protection is gonna grow 50% this year in 2021. Looking at improving that level of key component for their data centers as they go through that modernization and so from that point of view, what we're seeing and this is applicable for HP more than anybody else. Is that the speed that they came out with the Green Lake a number of years ago allowed customers, especially the big enterprises, we're having a massive amount of success together, enabled them to decide the economic buying model that they wanted and to combine that with the best of breed service and management and control. So from our point of view, that's something we've been investing within a long period of time now, not only on the solutions but also on how we go to market together. Our field team is working very closely with their field team within Green Lake to be there so that the customer can utilize it as a tool and not feel like they're having a different conversation because we're so baked in with the rest of the organization. So from our point of view, Green like his key to how things are moving forward and other things that the storage departments doing as well as they look at some of their >>new >>ways with their announcements we've, they've recently made with buying down on demand and new products they're having. So it's allowing the customer to have that choice and from us, it forms a core component of how we're working together. However you >>decide you want to consume the HP >>portfolio. You should have the ability for us to seamlessly work with it. And to your point, that's why that growth rate on our oi but more importantly on the revenue and the amount of growth of our customers year over year have really embraced that synchronization together. >>David, I think of your thoughts on containers. Generally. I want to I want to talk about the casting acquisition specifically but I want to ask about it in the context of the two things. One is just kind of the overall where you see that going and and how you're working with H. P. E. On that. But the other is as it relates to two of the most vexing problems for I. T. Folks in the past have been been security and data protection and their their their adjacency is you're not a security company but it's a kind of a cousin if you will. And and both of those areas have always been an afterthought. After you get snake bitten, you close the barn door kind of thing and it's a bolt on. Okay. I got my application it's all hard and I got my database and ready to go oh hey how do we back this thing up as an afterthought when I think containers and and and I think kubernetes I think developers I think infrastructure as code and now you're designing in security and data protection focusing on the ladder obviously how does the cast and acquisition and what H. P. S doing on containers fit into that context and how do you see it evolving overall. >>Yeah that's a great question. And there's two pastoring. I mean if you look at the way that HP moves to market and you look at the themes and the focus they've had now for the last three plus years with regard to that data center transformation and the movement and modernization of it. This has been a part of it but as you exactly said this is a new type of context point has come in. Obviously we acquired casting as you alluded to early in 2020 because for us we absolutely believe that this is a core component righty and you raised the point perfectly there Dave it used to be a component after you're snakebit, it's not today. I mean you alluded to it with regard to what's going on in the news over the last few weeks or so. It's nowhere near an afterthought Now it's a component that's built in from the start and that's why when you look at some of those studies about the spend in this area overall it isn't an afterthought anymore but I agree with you, it was when you look back a number of years and so for us casting build a very key area of our portfolio but it also allowed us with HP to double down on another area of investment for themselves. Esmeralda is a key play for HP moving forward. You can get casting on the Admiral marketplace and that's another example, as I was saying, it doesn't matter how you keep evolving your relationship with HP, how you keep drawing down from the portfolio, you want to make sure that the data protection, you've got the simplified data protection across all of these areas, is there from the start? And what we're finding is with Greenfield sites with new applications with new deployments where containers kubernetes really comes into play. They are looking to buy it together at the start so that they can focus on learning, acquiring deploying and really maximizing the benefit of kubernetes and not worry about that snakebite component you talked about. So for us, you know, it supports our portfolio and it allows us to stay with HP as they continue to evolve their strategy. >>That SG Stat of 50% growth in data protection is pretty amazing and it's funny, I think back to the insight acquisition of'em and you know, conventional wisdom would have said, oh wow, what a bummer. They bought this thing right before a global pandemic, in an economic downturn, it's but in this, in your businesses like real estate with pre pandemic post pandemic evaluation should be skyrocketing is is a function of of the heightened focus on digital and security and data protection. So it's really an exciting time. Um if I were to ask you this question 10 years ago, where where hp envy emceeing joint success in the marketplace, it would have been, well of course virtualization, it's all the rage. Where are you seeing success today? >>And that's a great question and it's >>interesting you talk about it with the pandemic. >>I'll be honest, the >>last recession us had, I was in the digital messaging market and at that >>point when economies get tight, everybody invest >>in cheaper types of marketing, which is digital messaging. Now, we've got a pandemic and guess what, everybody's looking at this area of the market again with protection. And I think to your point, it's a great question. What we're finding is the word hybrid and it's it's a well overplayed term, but it's reality of the scenario. You know, we came through and started our journey of being here in the virtual world, but we moved into the physical and that's where we've been having so much success with HP as well. And now as we move towards that cloud world, um and to a degree, the application world with Office 365 etcetera. What you're seeing is that hybrid me, we're seeing that the large enterprises that have relied on HP for so many years are also looking for that ubiquitous data protection layer >>and because we >>have it so >>well baked into all the >>different parts of the portfolio, it's a seamless ability to just continue to expand the utilization of the portfolio. So from our point of view, we're seeing fantastic enterprise success. We're seeing it in some of these verticals >>like medical, like >>financial, the big corporate pillars of society is related to the economic and industrial models. We're seeing those areas come on board, but we're also seeing, people will look at what I would classify some of the Greenfield projects and that's a different viewpoint because if you look back at the history of HP as well, they were fantastic >>provider for the >>foundation of the core business. Now, what we're finding is that coming to HP envy and saying, Hey, new areas Greenfield want to start fresh with a new approach, less of the legacy concern I've had before. How can we look at these new projects I'm working on? So we're seeing in the enterprise, we're seeing in what I would classify as traditional type of verticals and now we're starting to see that acceleration in some of these Greenfield projects, which is key. And that's something we've really, really enjoyed. And last part I'd say on that one as well is from a geographic basis. We are seeing >>all of our regions come up. Um and the reason why >>that's important is sometimes you see alliances that have success in one market or one area, we're seeing the year >>over year growth in >>a mere be faster than we've ever seen. We're seeing are America's growth growth year over year and Asia is continuing to explode for us together. And so from that point of view, I think what that's >>telling us is that the customers resonate on what we're producing together. And so from >>that point of view we're very >>ubiquitous in our level of value to customers and we're hoping to carry that on moving >>forward. Well it's >>two trusted brands. Obviously, you know the Hewlett Packard Enterprise name and that stands out and is no longer a start up with a funny name is You've proven in the marketplace, you just had a major release. I think it was V- 11. I'm not great the greatest products but um earlier this year, wondering how that impacted the alliance. Was that fit? >>Yeah. Great question. And to your point, some people still have trouble with the name but overall you're right, we do tend to find that we're in a good spot nowadays with regards to recognition. And I D. C just >>released some >>fantastic statistics on growth and another record breaking year for being both from the sequential growth and the year over year growth For the second half of 2020. Moving us up into the number two position for the first time, which again is a testament to the success were also having with hp and when you look at what happened on V 11, because as I mentioned at the start of this discussion, every one of our major releases has had HPV baked into it. And V 11 was a big release for us. There was a lot of pent up development work we were trying to get done and what we focused on with this again, especially for the enterprise, was looking at the HP portfolio and looking at faster speeds, faster speeds, have an economic value. We increased our speed and performance with HP Primera. We increase it with HP Nimble. We also made a really significant when we're working with HB store. Once we did a lot of evolution on that for a huge space savings which together really values the customer and then finally where we've also found the customers asked for a lot of development from us together is consolidated with an all in one backup type of approach with the HP Apollo series. So from that point of view, we focused on the experience of the customer because the integrations are so solid. We're now fine tuning to increase that ri for the customer and V 11 was a big component of that. >>What I love about Wien David. So I used to be an I. D. C. For years and you just mentioned that the study that came out and you're number two and I've been talking a lot of your executives recently, you've, you've thrown out that stand a lot number two. Number two. But, but when I was about to see everybody wanted to be number one at something. So you could say, oh, hey, we're number one backup company with the green logo. Hey, we're number one, but you're not doing that. And I'm joking about the green logo, but you actually are the number one. I think I'm correct in saying this, the number one pure play and back up in data protection. And you don't, you don't stand up on that mantle. And I was asking some executives why? And you're like, well, no, because we want to be number one, that's what, that's our objective. You know, we're not going to claim number one now until we get the number one will claim real number one. So I like that about you guys, you, you set the mark, the mark high. But so I love that. Um, >>I appreciate I have >>how should people be thinking about the future of your relationship with H. P. E. You know, the rest of this year and beyond? >>Yeah, great question. And I do really do appreciate that comment because it's an easy one to sort of pick up on it. And it comes down to the attitude. It comes down to our attitude with regards to there's nothing wrong with fight. There's nothing wrong with making sure that you continue to have a north star that you never want to stop getting too. And I think that's a testament to the development of the products and, and overall our attitude to working in the field and working with our alliances And when you look about, when you ask the question, excuse me Dave about, you know, where do we see the HP envy moving forward, >>consistency, consistency >>Is key for us for 10 years, we've been consistent in providing value And we want to continue doing that for another 10 years moving forward. And as we evolve our portfolio and you look at our Act two and as you talked about some of the things you've talked to, other executives about when you look at, we're moving forward, we're doing that in conjunction and we believe as you move forward with regard to some of the things HPR Do we want that consistency of integration? We want that consistency of experience to the customer. We want that consistency of listening and developing our engineering resources together to address that need. And again, it sounds like a really obvious answer and it is, but the difference on the back of this one, to be honest with you, Davis, we proved this again and again and again. And as you look at the Truman data protection solution and you do it in conjunction with HP, it's one of those things where we're so proud to make sure we keep working hard together and pushing each other to be better for our customers, that we're really excited about how it moves forwards. Were also, and again, we're not going into any juicy secrets here, but I wouldn't be surprised if V 12 that comes here in in the future also has another little nice street related to HPV as well. So from that point of view, um, you should have consistency, you should have trust and you should be excited about the fact that the investment and the joint alliance is stronger than it's ever been. >>Well, you guys are setting the marks. Uh, certainly the competitive landscape gets tougher and tougher, but you guys are are leading, you're moving fast, you get a great product to move at the speed, the speed you're, you are and growing at the pace you are for a billion dollar company is impressive. He's the senior director of product management for HP. Green Lake Lighthouse. New offering from HP. We're gonna talk about that. We're gonna talk about cloud native. Hey john, welcome to the cube. Good to see you again. >>Awesome. Great to be with you again. >>All right. So what is Green Lake Lighthouse? >>Yeah, it's very excited. Another new offering and innovation from H P E to support our broader Green Lake strategy and plans. It's really a brand new, purpose built cloud native platform that we've developed and created. That pulls together all of our infrastructure leadership with our platform software leadership into a single integrated system built to run green light cloud services. So think of it as you know, fully integrated, deploy it any place you want on your premises at a co location provider or at the edge wherever you need. Um, they'll inter operate, work together sharing data, you know, running apps together. Great capability for people to bring the cloud where they want as we talk about what Green like it's the cloud that comes to you. >>So should we think of this as a as a management platform? Is it also sort of a quasi development platform kind of, where does it fit in that spectrum? >>Well, it's really more of an integrated system with all of the integrated control planes needed to run it in a distributed fashion. So it's a it's a true distributed cloud intended to run at any client location that's needed, connects back to Green Lake Central and our Green Light cloud operations teams to go ahead and run any cloud services that they want. So you get the benefit of running those workloads wherever you need but that, you know, uh centralized control that people want in terms of how they run their class. >>Okay so we think of these things like for instance how is it different from a WS outposts or things like you know as your stack or as your hub? >>Yeah, very simply this is because it's a distributed cloud intended to make it so you can run it wherever you need. You don't need to be tethered to any of the public cause or the various public clouds out there so people can now run their systems wherever they want however they need without that required tethering that much of those other vendors require. So you can really sort of own your own cloud or have that cloud come to wherever you need it within your overall. I. T. >>Can I tether to a public cloud if I want to. >>Yes. The cloud services like many other cloud services can interconnect together, so no issue, if you want to run or even do fail over between public cloud or on premises, it's all how you want to set it up. But that connection to public cut again through Green Lake is done at that cloud services level. Uh you know where you would connect one of the screen, like lighthouse systems to the public cloud three services. >>Okay, so maybe we talk a little bit about the use cases in a minute, but but how flexible is this? How do I configure Lighthouse? You know what what comes standard? What what what what are my options? >>Yes, so we've designed it in a very modular fashion so that people can really configure it to whatever their needs are at any given location. So there's a basic set of modules that align to a lot of the compute and storage instances that people are familiar with from all of the cloud providers, you simply tell us which workloads you want to be running on it and how much capacity you want and that will get configured and deployed to that given site. In terms of the different types, we have what we're calling to series or a set of series that are available for this to meet different sets of needs, one being more mainstream for broad use cases that people need virtualized container, any other type of enterprise workloads and another more technically focused with higher performance networking. For higher performance deployments, you can choose which of those fits your needs for those given areas. >>So maybe you could talk a little bit more about the workloads and what specifically is uh supported and how they get deployed. >>Again, all of it is managed and run through Green Lake Central. That's our one location where people can go to watch these things manage them. You can run container as a service VM as a service as needed on these different platforms. You can actually mix and match those as well. So one of these platforms can run multiple of those and you can vary the mix of those as your business needs change over time. So think of it as a very flexible way to manage this, which is really what cloud native is all about, having that flexibility to run those workloads wherever and however you need. In addition, we can build more advanced type of solutions on top of those sort of foundational capabilities with things like HPC is a service and collapses a service to better enable clients to deploy any of their given enterprise workloads. >>John what about the security model for lighthouse? Um, that's obviously a big deal. Everybody's talking about these days. It can't open the, the news without seeing some kind of, you know, hack de jure, how does Lighthouse operate in the, you know, secure environment? >>Well, you know, first of all, there's sort of a new standard that was established, um, you know, within these cloud operating models and HPV was leading in terms of infrastructure innovation with our Silicon Root of Trust, where we came out with the world's most secure infrastructure a few years ago. And what we're doing now, since this is a full platform and integrated system will be extending that capability beyond just how we create a root of trust in our manufacturing facilities to ensure that it's secure. Running it within the infrastructure itself, will be extending that vertically up into the software stacks of containers and VMS sort of using that root of trust up to make sure everything's secure in that sense. And then eventually up to the workloads themselves. So by being able to go back to that root of trust, it really makes a big difference in how people can run things in an enterprise secure way. Great innovations continued and one of our big focus areas throughout this year. >>So where does it fit in the portfolio, john I mean, how is it uh, compliment or how is it different from, you know, the typical HP systems, the hardware and software that we're used to? >>You might think of this as sort of a best of bringing together all the great innovations of H P D. You know, we we've got awesome infrastructure that we lead for many, many years. We've got, you know, great more cloud native software that's being developed. We've got great partnerships that we've got with a lot of the leading vendors out there. This allows us to bring all of those things together into an integrated platform that is really intended to run these cloud native services. So uh it builds on top of that leadership fits uh in that sense with the portfolio, but it's ultimately about how it allows us to run and extend our green light capabilities as we know them, to make them more uh more consumable if you want to call it for a lot of our enterprise clients and whatever location. So >>when would I when would I use Lighthouse? And when would I use sort of a traditional H P E system? >>Again, it's a matter of which level of integration people want. Cloud is really also in terms of experience about simplifying what people are purchasing and making it easier for them to consume easier for them to roll out a lot of these things. That's when you'd want to purchase a Lighthouse versus our other infrastructure products, we'll always have those leading infrastructure products where people can put together everything exactly the way that they want and go through the qualification and certification of a lot of those workloads or they can go ahead and select this green like Lighthouse, where they have a lot of these things available in a catalog. We do validation of, of the workloads and, and uh, platform systems so that it's all sort of ready for people to roll out in a much more secure, tested and agile fashion. >>So if I have a cloud first strategy, but I don't want to put it in the public cloud, but I want that cloud experience. Uh, and I want to go fast. It sounds like Lighthouse is that I'm the perfect customer for for Lighthouse, >>precisely. You know, this is taking that cloud experience that people are wanting the simplicity of those deployments and making it where it can come to them in whichever location that they want. You know, running it on a consumption basis so that it's a lot easier wait for them to go ahead and manage and deploy those things with out a lot of the internal qualifications and certifications that they had to do over the years >>versus okay. But or, and or if I want to customize it, maybe I want to, maybe I'm a channel partner. I want to bring some of my own value. I got a specific use case that's not covered by something like Lighthouse. That's where I would go with the more traditional infrastructure, >>correct? Yes. If anyone wants to do customization, we've got a great set of products for that. We really want to use Lighthouses, a mechanism for us to standardize and focus on more enabling these broader cloud capabilities for crime >>and Lighthouse. Uh Talk a little bit more about the automation that that I get, you know, things like patching and software updates that's sort of included in this integrated system. >>Is that correct? Absolutely. You know, when, when when people think about, you know, managing workloads in the cloud, they don't worry about taking care of from we're updating and a lot of those things that's all taken care of by the provider. So uh in that same experience, Lighthouse comes with all of the firmware, updating, all of the software, updating all included, all managed through our Green Lake managed services teams. So that's just part of how the system takes care of itself. Um You know, that's a new level of capability and experience that's consistent with all other cloud providers >>and that's that's okay, so that's that's something that is a managed service. Um So let's say I have a lighthouse on prem, you're gonna you're gonna that managed services doing all the patching and the releases and the updates and that lives that lives in the cloud, that lives in hp, that lives in my prem. >>Well, yeah, ultimately it all goes through Green Lake Central and it's managed. Um you know, all of those deployments are are automated in nature so that people don't have to worry about them. Um There's multiple ways that that can get delivered to them. We have some automation and control plane technology that brings that all together for them. Um You know, it can vary based on the client on their degree of of how they want to manage some of that, but it's all taken care of for them. >>And you've got Green Lake in the name and my to infer from that that it's sort of dovetails in is one of the puzzles in the Green Lake mosaic. >>Yeah, exactly. So think of think of Green Lake as our broader initiative for everything cloud and how do we start enabling not only these cloud services, but make it easier for people to deploy those and consume them, consume them wherever they need. And this is the enablement piece. This is that portion of green light that helps them enable that connected to green like Central where they can manage everything centrally. And then we've got that broad catalog of services available. >>And when can I get it? When you go G. A. >>Yes. So it'll july is when our first set of shipments and availability are there. So just a very few days after you discover here, and we'll expand the portfolio over time with more of a mainstream version early, more technical or performance oriented ones available soon thereafter. And we've got plans even for edge type offerings, uh more in the, in the future as well. So a case where we'll continue to build and expand more targeting these platforms to folks needs whether their enterprise or maybe there are vertical offerings that they want in terms of how they move all these things together. Think of Telco is a great case where people want this. Healthcare is another area where we can add the value of these integrated systems in a very purpose built way. >>Can I ask you what, like what's inside, you know, what, what can I get in terms of, you know, basic infrastructure, compute storage, networking, what are my options, >>all of the above. You know, what we'll do is we'll we'll go through the basic selection of all of that greatest hits uh within our complete portfolio. Pulling together, give you a few simple choices, you know, you think about it as you want, general purpose compute modules you might want compute optimized or memory optimized modules. Each of those are simple choices that you'll make that come together underlying all that are the great infrastructure pieces that you've known for years, but we take care of simplifying that for you so you don't have to worry about those details. >>Great well, john, congratulations on the new new product and uh and thank you for sharing the the the update with the cube. >>Thank you very much appreciate. >>All right, thank you for watching the cubes coverage of HP discover 2021. Brought to You by on Shape, which is a PTC company. My name is Dave Valentin. I'm coming to you from our studios outside of Boston. I'll be directing the conversations today. It's a very exciting, all live program. We're gonna look at how product innovation has evolved and where it's going and how engineers, entrepreneurs and educators are applying cutting edge, cutting edge product development techniques and technology to change our world. You know, the pandemic is, of course, profoundly impacted society and altered how individuals and organizations they're gonna be thinking about an approaching the coming decade. Leading technologists, engineers, product developers and educators have responded to the new challenges that we're facing from creating lifesaving products to helping students learn from home toe how to apply the latest product development techniques and solve the world's hardest problems. And in this program, you'll hear from some of the world's leading experts and practitioners on how product development and continuous innovation has evolved, how it's being applied toe positive positively affect society and importantly where it's going in the coming decades. So let's get started with our first session fueling Tech for good. And with me is John Hirschbeck, who is the president of the Suffers, a service division of PTC, which acquired on shape just over a year ago, where John was the CEO and co founder, and Dana Grayson is here. She is the co founder and general partner at Construct Capital, a new venture capital firm. Folks, welcome to the program. Thanks so much for coming on. >>Great to be here, Dave. >>All right, John. >>You're very welcome. Dana. Look, John, let's get into it for first Belated congratulations on the acquisition of Von Shape. That was an awesome seven year journey for your company. Tell our audience a little bit about the story of on shape, but take us back to Day zero. Why did you and your co founders start on shape? Well, >>actually, start before on shaping the You know, David, I've been in this business for almost 40 years. The business of building software tools for product developers and I had been part of some previous products in the industry and companies that had been in their era. Big changes in this market and about, you know, a little Before founding on shape, we started to see the problems product development teams were having with the traditional tools of that era years ago, and we saw the opportunity presented by Cloud Web and Mobile Technology. And we said, Hey, we could use Cloud Web and Mobile to solve the problems of product developers make their Their business is run better. But we have to build an entirely new system, an entirely new company, to do it. And that's what on shapes about. >>Well, so notwithstanding the challenges of co vid and difficulties this year, how is the first year been as, Ah, division of PTC for you guys? How's business? Anything you can share with us? >>Yeah, our first year of PTC has been awesome. It's been, you know, when you get acquired, Dave, you never You know, you have great optimism, but you never know what life will really be like. It's sort of like getting married or something, you know, until you're really doing it, you don't know. And so I'm happy to say that one year into our acquisition, um, PTC on shape is thriving. It's worked out better than I could have imagined a year ago. Along always, I mean sales are up. In Q four, our new sales rate grew 80% vs Excuse me, our fiscal Q four Q three. In the calendar year, it grew 80% compared to the year before. Our educational uses skyrocketing with around 400% growth, most recently year to year of students and teachers and co vid. And we've launched a major cloud platform using the core of on shape technology called Atlas. So, um, just tons of exciting things going on a TTC. >>That's awesome. But thank you for sharing some of those metrics. And of course, you're very humble individual. You know, people should know a little bit more about you mentioned, you know, we founded Solid Works, co founded Solid where I actually found it solid works. You had a great exit in the in the late nineties. But what I really appreciate is, you know, you're an entrepreneur. You've got a passion for the babies that you you helped birth. You stayed with the salt systems for a number of years. The company that quiet, solid works well over a decade. And and, of course, you and I have talked about how you participated in the the M I T. Blackjack team. You know, back in the day, a zai say you're very understated, for somebody was so accomplished. Well, >>that's kind of you, but I tend to I tend Thio always keep my eye more on what's ahead. You know what's next, then? And you know, I look back Sure to enjoy it and learn from it about what I can put to work making new memories, making new successes. >>Love it. Okay, let's bring Dana into the conversation. Hello, Dana. You look you're a fairly early investor in in on shape when you were with any A And and I think it was like it was a serious B, but it was very right close after the A raise. And and you were and still are a big believer in industrial transformation. So take us back. What did you see about on shape back then? That excited you. >>Thanks. Thanks for that. Yeah. I was lucky to be a early investment in shape. You know, the things that actually attracted me. Don shape were largely around John and, uh, the team. They're really setting out to do something, as John says humbly, something totally new, but really building off of their background was a large part of it. Um, but, you know, I was really intrigued by the design collaboration side of the product. Um, I would say that's frankly what originally attracted me to it. What kept me in the room, you know, in terms of the industrial world was seeing just if you start with collaboration around design what that does to the overall industrial product lifecycle accelerating manufacturing just, you know, modernizing all the manufacturing, just starting with design. So I'm really thankful to the on shape guys, because it was one of the first investments I've made that turned me on to the whole sector. And while just such a great pleasure to work with with John and the whole team there. Now see what they're doing inside PTC. >>And you just launched construct capital this year, right in the middle of a pandemic and which is awesome. I love it. And you're focused on early stage investing. Maybe tell us a little bit about construct capital. What your investment thesis is and you know, one of the big waves that you're hoping to ride. >>Sure, it construct it is literally lifting out of any what I was doing there. Um uh, for on shape, I went on to invest in companies such as desktop metal and Tulip, to name a couple of them form labs, another one in and around the manufacturing space. But our thesis that construct is broader than just, you know, manufacturing and industrial. It really incorporates all of what we'd call foundational industries that have let yet to be fully tech enabled or digitized. Manufacturing is a big piece of it. Supply chain, logistics, transportation of mobility or not, or other big pieces of it. And together they really drive, you know, half of the GDP in the US and have been very under invested. And frankly, they haven't attracted really great founders like they're on in droves. And I think that's going to change. We're seeing, um, entrepreneurs coming out of the tech world orthe Agnelli into these industries and then bringing them back into the tech world, which is which is something that needs to happen. So John and team were certainly early pioneers, and I think, you know, frankly, obviously, that voting with my feet that the next set, a really strong companies are going to come out of the space over the next decade. >>I think it's a huge opportunity to digitize the sort of traditionally non digital organizations. But Dana, you focused. I think it's it's accurate to say you're focused on even Mawr early stage investing now. And I want to understand why you feel it's important to be early. I mean, it's obviously riskier and reward e er, but what do you look for in companies and and founders like John >>Mhm, Um, you know, I think they're different styles of investing all the way up to public market investing. I've always been early stage investors, so I like to work with founders and teams when they're, you know, just starting out. Um, I happened to also think that we were just really early in the whole digital transformation of this world. You know, John and team have been, you know, back from solid works, etcetera around the space for a long time. But again, the downstream impact of what they're doing really changes the whole industry. And and so we're pretty early and in digitally transforming that market. Um, so that's another reason why I wanna invest early now, because I do really firmly believe that the next set of strong companies and strong returns for my own investors will be in the spaces. Um, you know, what I look for in Founders are people that really see the world in a different way. And, you know, sometimes some people think of founders or entrepreneurs is being very risk seeking. You know, if you asked John probably and another successful entrepreneurs, they would call themselves sort of risk averse, because by the time they start the company, they really have isolated all the risk out of it and think that they have given their expertise or what they're seeing their just so compelled to go change something, eh? So I look for that type of attitude experience a Z. You can also tell from John. He's fairly humble. So humility and just focus is also really important. Um, that there's a That's a lot of it. Frankly, >>Excellent. Thank you, John. You got such a rich history in the space. Uh, and one of you could sort of connect the dots over time. I mean, when you look back, what were the major forces that you saw in the market in in the early days? Particularly days of on shape on? And how is that evolved? And what are you seeing today? Well, >>I think I touched on it earlier. Actually, could I just reflect on what Dana said about risk taking for just a quick one and say, throughout my life, from blackjack to starting solid works on shape, it's about taking calculated risks. Yes, you try to eliminate the risk Sa's much as you can, but I always say, I don't mind taking a risk that I'm aware of, and I've calculated through as best I can. I don't like taking risks that I don't know I'm taking. That's right. You >>like to bet on >>sure things as much as you sure things, or at least where you feel you. You've done the research and you see them and you know they're there and you know, you, you you keep that in mind in the room, and I think that's great. And Dana did so much for us. Dana, I want to thank you again. For all that, you did it every step of the way, from where we started to to, you know, your journey with us ended formally but continues informally. Now back to you, Dave, I think, question about the opportunity and how it's shaped up. Well, I think I touched on it earlier when I said It's about helping product developers. You know, our customers of the people build the future off manufactured goods. Anything you think of that would be manufacturing factory. You know, the chair you're sitting in machine that made your coffee. You know, the computer you're using, the trucks that drive by on the street, all the covert product research, the equipment being used to make vaccines. All that stuff is designed by someone, and our job is given the tools to do it better. And I could see the problems that those product developers had that we're slowing them down with using the computing systems of the time. When we built solid works, that was almost 30 years ago. If people don't realize that it was in the early >>nineties and you know, we did the >>best we could for the early nineties, but what we did. We didn't anticipate the world of today. And so people were having problems with just installing the systems. Dave, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to install these systems. You need toe speck up a special windows computer, you know, and make sure you've got all the memory and graphics you need and getting to get that set up. You need to make sure the device drivers air, right, install a big piece of software. Ah, license key. I'm not making this up. They're still around. You may not even know what those are. You know, Dennis laughing because, you know, zero cool people do things like this anymore. Um, and it only runs some windows. You want a second user to use it? They need a copy. They need a code. Are they on the same version? It's a nightmare. The teams change, you know? You just say, Well, get everyone on the software. Well, who's everyone? You know, you got a new vendor today? A new customer tomorrow, a new employee. People come on and off the team. The other problem is the data stored in files, thousands of files. This isn't like a spreadsheet or word processor, where there's one file to pass around these air thousands of files to make one, even a simple product. People were tearing their hair out. John, what do we do? I've got copies everywhere. I don't know where the latest version is. We tried like, you know, locking people out so that only one person can change it At the time that works against speed, it works against innovation. We saw what was happening with Cloud Web and mobile. So what's happened in the years since is every one of the forces that product developers experience the need for speed, the need for innovation, the need to be more efficient with their people in their capital. Resource is every one of those trends have been amplified since we started on shape by a lot of forces in the world. And covert is amplified all those the need for agility and remote work cove it is amplified all that the same time, The acceptance of cloud. You know, a few years ago, people were like cloud, you know, how is that gonna work now They're saying to me, You know, increasingly, how would you ever even have done this without the cloud. How do you make solid works work without the cloud? How would that even happen? You know, once people understand what on shapes about >>and we're the >>Onley full SAS solution software >>as a service, >>full SAS solution in our industry. So what's happened in those years? Same problems we saw earlier, but turn up the gain, their bigger problems. And with cloud, we've seen skepticism of years ago turn into acceptance. And now even embracement in the cova driven new normal. >>Yeah. So a lot of friction in the previous environments cloud obviously a huge factor on, I guess. I guess Dana John could see it coming, you know, in the early days of solid works with, you know, had Salesforce, which is kind of the first major independent SAS player. Well, I guess that was late nineties. So his post solid works, but pre in shape and their work day was, you know, pre on shape in the mid two thousands. And and but But, you know, the bet was on the SAS model was right for Crick had and and product development, you know, which maybe the time wasn't a no brainer. Or maybe it was, I don't know, but Dana is there. Is there anything that you would invest in today? That's not Cloud based? >>Um, that's a great question. I mean, I think we still see things all the time in the manufacturing world that are not cloud based. I think you know, the closer you get to the shop floor in the production environment. Um e think John and the PTC folks would agree with this, too, but that it's, you know, there's reliability requirements, performance requirements. There's still this attitude of, you know, don't touch the printing press. So the cloud is still a little bit scary sometimes. And I think hybrid cloud is a real thing for those or on premise. Solutions, in some cases is still a real thing. What what we're more focused on. And, um, despite whether it's on premise or hybrid or or SAS and Cloud is a frictionless go to market model, um, in the companies we invest in so sass and cloud, or really make that easy to adopt for new users, you know, you sign up, started using a product, um, but whether it's hosted in the cloud, whether it's as you can still distribute buying power. And, um, I would I'm just encouraging customers in the customer world and the more industrial environment to entrust some of their lower level engineers with more budget discretionary spending so they can try more products and unlock innovation. >>Right? The unit economics are so compelling. So let's bring it, you know, toe today's you know, situation. John, you decided to exit about a year ago. You know? What did you see in PTC? Other than the obvious money? What was the strategic fit? >>Yeah, Well, David, I wanna be clear. I didn't exit anything. Really? You >>know, I love you and I don't like that term exit. I >>mean, Dana had exit is a shareholder on and so it's not It's not exit for me. It's just a step in the journey. What we saw in PTC was a partner. First of all, that shared our vision from the top down at PTC. Jim Hempleman, the CEO. He had a great vision for for the impact that SAS can make based on cloud technology and really is Dana of highlighted so much. It's not just the technology is how you go to market and the whole business being run and how you support and make the customers successful. So Jim shared a vision for the potential. And really, really, um said Hey, come join us and we can do this bigger, Better, faster. We expanded the vision really to include this Atlas platform for hosting other SAS applications. That P D. C. I mean, David Day arrived at PTC. I met the head of the academic program. He came over to me and I said, You know, and and how many people on your team? I thought he'd say 5 40 people on the PTC academic team. It was amazing to me because, you know, we were we were just near about 100 people were required are total company. We didn't even have a dedicated academic team and we had ah, lot of students signing up, you know, thousands and thousands. Well, now we have hundreds of thousands of students were approaching a million users and that shows you the power of this team that PTC had combined with our product and technology whom you get a big success for us and for the teachers and students to the world. We're giving them great tools. So so many good things were also putting some PTC technology from other parts of PTC back into on shape. One area, a little spoiler, little sneak peek. Working on taking generative design. Dana knows all about generative design. We couldn't acquire that technology were start up, you know, just to too much to do. But PTC owns one of the best in the business. This frustrated technology we're working on putting that into on shaping our customers. Um, will be happy to see it, hopefully in the coming year sometime. >>It's great to see that two way exchange. Now, you both know very well when you start a company, of course, a very exciting time. You know, a lot of baggage, you know, our customers pulling you in a lot of different directions and asking you for specials. You have this kind of clean slate, so to speak in it. I would think in many ways, John, despite you know, your install base, you have a bit of that dynamic occurring today especially, you know, driven by the forced march to digital transformation that cove it caused. So when you sit down with the team PTC and talk strategy. You now have more global resource is you got cohorts selling opportunities. What's the conversation like in terms of where you want to take the division? >>Well, Dave, you actually you sounds like we should have you coming in and talking about strategy because you've got the strategy down. I mean, we're doing everything said global expansion were able to reach across selling. We got some excellent PTC customers that we can reach reach now and they're finding uses for on shape. I think the plan is to, you know, just go, go, go and grow, grow, grow where we're looking for this year, priorities are expand the product. I mentioned the breath of the product with new things PTC did recently. Another technology that they acquired for on shape. We did an acquisition. It was it was small, wasn't widely announced. It, um, in an area related to interfacing with electrical cad systems. So So we're doing We're expanding the breath of on shape. We're going Maura, depth in the areas were already in. We have enormous opportunity to add more features and functions that's in the product. Go to market. You mentioned it global global presence. That's something we were a little light on a year ago. Now we have a team. Dana may not even know what we have. A non shape, dedicated team in Barcelona, based in Barcelona but throughout Europe were doing multiple languages. Um, the academic program just introduced a new product into that space that z even fueling more success and growth there. Um, and of course, continuing to to invest in customer success and this Atlas platform story I keep mentioning, we're going to soon have We're gonna soon have four other major PTC brands shipping products on our Atlas Saas platform. And so we're really excited about that. That's good for the other PTC products. It's also good for on shape because now there's there's. There's other interesting products that are on shape customers can use take advantage of very easily using, say, a common log in conventions about user experience there, used to invest of all they're SAS based, so they that makes it easier to begin with. So that's some of the exciting things going on. I think you'll see PTC, um, expanding our lead in SAS based applications for this sector for our our target, uh, sectors not just in, um, in cat and data management, but another area. PTC's Big and his augmented reality with of euphoria, product line leader and industrial uses of a R. That's a whole other story we should do. A whole nother show augmented reality. But these products are amazing. You can you can help factory workers people on, uh, people who are left out of the digital transformation. Sometimes we're standing from machine >>all day. >>They can't be sitting like we are doing Zoom. They can wear a R headset in our tools, let them create great content. This is an area Dana is invested in other companies. But what I wanted to note is the new releases of our authoring software. For this, our content getting released this month, used through the Atlas platform, the SAS components of on shape for things like revision management and collaboration on duh workflow activity. All that those are tools that we're able to share leverage. We get a lot of synergy. It's just really good. It's really fun to have a good time. That's >>awesome. And then we're gonna be talking to John MacLean later about that. Let's do a little deeper Dive on that. And, Dana, what is your involvement today with with on shape? But you're looking for you know, which of their customers air actually adopting. And they're gonna disrupt their industries. And you get good pipeline from that. How do you collaborate today? >>That sounds like a great idea. Um, Aziz, John will tell you I'm constantly just asking him for advice and impressions of other entrepreneurs and picking his brain on ideas. No formal relationship clearly, but continue to count John and and John and other people in on shaping in the circle of experts that I rely on for their opinions. >>All right, so we have some questions from the crowd here. Uh, one of the questions is for the dream team. You know, John and Dana. What's your next next collective venture? I don't think we're there yet, are we? No. >>I just say, as Dana said, we love talking to her about. You know, Dana, you just returned the compliment. We would try and give you advice and the deals you're looking at, and I'm sort of casually mentoring at least one of your portfolio entrepreneurs, and that's been a lot of fun for May on, hopefully a value to them. But also Dana. We uran important pipeline to us in the world of some new things that are happening that we wouldn't see if you know you've shown us some things that you've said. What do you think of this business? And for us, it's like, Wow, it's cool to see that's going on And that's what's supposed to work in an ecosystem like this. So we we deeply value the ongoing relationship. And no, we're not starting something new. I got a lot of work left to do with what I'm doing and really happy. But we can We can collaborate in this way on other ventures. >>I like this question to somebody asking With the cloud options like on shape, Wilmore students have stem opportunities s Oh, that's a great question. Are you because of sass and cloud? Are you able to reach? You know, more students? Much more cost effectively. >>Yeah, Dave, I'm so glad that that that I was asked about this because Yes, and it's extremely gratified us. Yes, we are because of cloud, because on shape is the only full cloud full SAS system or industry were able to reach. Stem education brings able to be part of bringing step education to students who couldn't get it otherwise. And one of most gratifying gratifying things to me is the emails were getting from teachers, um, that that really, um, on the phone calls that were they really pour their heart out and say We're able to get to students in areas that have very limited compute resource is that don't have an I T staff where they don't know what computer that the students can have at home, and they probably don't even have a computer. We're talking about being able to teach them on a phone to have an android phone a low end android phone. You can do three D modeling on there with on shape. Now you can't do it any other system, but with on shape, you could do it. And so the teacher can say to the students, They have to have Internet access, and I know there's a huge community that doesn't even have Internet access, and we're not able, unfortunately to help that. But if you have Internet and you have even an android phone, we can enable the educator to teach them. And so we have case after case of saving a stem program or expanding it into the students that need it most is the ones we're helping here. So really excited about that. And we're also able to let in addition to the run on run on whatever computing devices they have, we also offer them the tools they need for remote teaching with a much richer experience. Could you teach solid works remotely? Well, maybe if the student ran it had a windows workstation. You know, big, big, high end workstation. Maybe it could, but it would be like the difference between collaborating with on shape and collaborate with solid works. Like the difference between a zoom video call and talking on the landline phone. You know, it's a much richer experience, and that's what you need. And stem teaching stem is hard, So yeah, we're super super. Um, I'm excited about bringing stem to more students because of cloud yond >>we're talking about innovation for good, and then the discussion, John, you just had it. Really? There could be a whole another vector here. We could discuss on diversity, and I wanna end with just pointing out. So, Dana, your new firm, it's a woman led firm, too. And collaborative nonprofit was initiative that was funded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, and really around diagnosing and curing and better managing infectious diseases. So really timely topic. Philip Tabor is also joining us. He's with silver side detectors, which develops neutron detective detection systems. Yet you want to know if early, if neutrons and radiation or in places where you don't want them, So this should be really interesting. And last but not least, Matthew Shields is with the Charlottesville schools and is gonna educate us on how he and his team are educating students in the use of modern engineering tools and techniques. Gentlemen, welcome to the Cuban to the program. This should be really interesting. Thanks for coming on. >>Hi. Or pleasure >>for having us. >>You're very welcome. Okay, let me ask each of you because you're all doing such interesting and compelling work. Let's start with Rafael. Tell us more about the bio hub and your role there, please. >>Okay. Yeah. So you said that I hope is a nonprofit research institution, um, funded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan. Um, and our main mission is to develop new technologies to help advance medicine and help, hopefully cure and manage diseases. Um, we also have very close collaborations with Universe California, San Francisco, Stanford University and the University California Berkeley on. We tried to bring those universities together, so they collaborate more of biomedical topics. And I manage a team of engineers. They by joining platform. Um, and we're tasked with creating instruments for the laboratory to help the scientist boats inside the organization and also in the partner universities Do their experiments in better ways in ways that they couldn't do before >>in this edition was launched Well, five years ago, >>it was announced at the end of 2016, and we actually started operation with at the beginning of 2017, which is when I joined, um, So this is our third year. >>And how's how's it going? How does it work? I mean, these things take time. >>It's been a fantastic experience. Uh, the organization works beautifully. Um, it was amazing to see it grow From the beginning, I was employee number 12, I think eso When I came in, it was just a nem P office building and empty labs. And very quickly we had something running about. It's amazing eso I'm very proud of the work that we have done to make that possible. Um And then, of course, that's you mentioned now with co vid, um, we've been able to do a lot of very cool work attire being of the pandemic in March, when there was a deficit of testing, uh, capacity in California, we spun up a testing laboratory in record time in about a week. It was crazy. It was a crazy project, Um, but but incredibly satisfying. And we ended up running all the way until the beginning of November, when the lab was finally shut down. We could process about 3000 samples a day. I think at the end of it all, we were able to test about 100 on the order of 100 and 50,000 samples from all over the state. We were providing free testing toe all of the Department of Public Health Department of Public Health in California, which at the media pandemic, had no way to do testing affordably and fast. So I think that was a great service to the state. Now the state has created that testing system that would serve those departments. So then we decided that it was unnecessary to keep going with testing in the other biopsy that would shut down. >>All right. Thank you for that. Now, Now, Philip, you What you do is mind melting. You basically helped keep the world safe. Maybe describe a little bit more about silver sod detectors and what your role is there and how it all works. >>Tour. So we make a nuclear bomb detectors and we also make water detectors. So we try and do our part thio keep the world from blowing up and make it a better place at the same time. Both of these applications use neutron radiation detectors. That's what we make. Put them out by import border crossing places like that. They can help make sure that people aren't smuggling. Shall we say very bad things. Um, there's also a burgeoning field of research and application where you can use neutrons with some pretty cool physics to find water so you could do things. Like what? A detector up in the mountains and measure snowpack. Put it out in the middle of the field and measure soil moisture content. And as you might imagine, there's some really cool applications in, uh, research and agronomy and public policy for this. >>All right, so it's OK, so it's a It's much more than, you know, whatever fighting terrorism, it's there's a riel edge or I kind of i o t application for what you guys >>do. We do both its's to plowshares. You might >>say a mat. I I look at your role is kind of scaling the brain power for for the future. Maybe tell us more about Charlottesville schools and in the mission that you're pursuing and what you do. >>Thank you. Um, I've been in Charlottesville City schools for about 11 or 12 years. I started their teaching, um, a handful of classes, math and science and things like that. But Thescore board and my administration had the crazy idea of starting an engineering program about seven years ago. My background is an engineering is an engineering. My masters is in mechanical and aerospace engineering and um, I basically spent a summer kind of coming up with what might be a fun engineering curriculum for our students. And it started with just me and 30 students about seven years ago, Um, kind of a home spun from scratch curriculum. One of my goals from the outset was to be a completely project based curriculum, and it's now grown. We probably have about six or 700 students, five or six full time teachers. We now have pre engineering going on at the 5th and 6th grade level. I now have students graduating. Uh, you know, graduating after senior year with, like, seven years of engineering under their belt and heading off to doing some pretty cool stuff. So it's It's been a lot of fun building a program and, um, and learning a lot in the process. >>That's awesome. I mean, you know, Cuba's. We've been passionate about things like women in tech, uh, diversity stem. You know, not only do we need more, more students and stem, we need mawr underrepresented women, minorities, etcetera. We were just talking to John Herstek and integrate gration about this is Do you do you feel is though you're I mean, first of all, the work that you do is awesome, but but I'll go one step further. Do you feel as though it's reaching, um, or diverse base? And how is that going? >>That's a great question. I think research shows that a lot of people get funneled into one kind of track or career path or set of interests really early on in their educational career, and sometimes that that funnel is kind of artificial. And so that's one of the reasons we keep pushing back. Um, so our school systems introducing kindergartners to programming on DSO We're trying to push back how we expose students to engineering and to stem fields as early as possible. And we've definitely seen the first of that in my program. In fact, my engineering program, uh, sprung out of an after school in Extracurricular Science Club that actually three girls started at our school. So I think that actually has helped that three girls started the club that eventually is what led to our engineering programs that sort of baked into the DNA and also our eyes a big public school. And we have about 50% of the students are under the poverty line and we e in Charlottesville, which is a big refugee town. And so I've been adamant from Day one that there are no barriers to entry into the program. There's no test you have to take. You don't have to have be taking a certain level of math or anything like that. That's been a lot of fun. To have a really diverse set of kids enter the program and be successful, >>that's final. That's great to hear. So, Philip, I wanna come back to you. You know, I think about maybe some day we'll be able to go back to a sporting events, and I know when I when I'm in there, there's somebody up on the roof looking out for me, you know, watching the crowd, and they have my back. And I think in many ways, the products that you build, you know, our similar. I may not know they're there, but they're keeping us safe or they're measuring things that that that I don't necessarily see. But I wonder if you could talk about a little bit more detail about the products you build and how they're impacting society. >>Sure, so There are certainly a lot of people who are who are watching, trying to make sure things were going well in keeping you safe that you may or may not be aware of. And we try and support ah lot of them. So we have detectors that are that are deployed in a variety of variety of uses, with a number of agencies and governments that dio like I was saying, ports and border crossing some other interesting applications that are looking for looking for signals that should not be there and working closely to fit into the operations these folks do. Onda. We also have a lot of outreach to researchers and scientists trying to help them support the work they're doing. Um, using neutron detection for soil moisture monitoring is a some really cool opportunities for doing it at large scale and with much less, um, expense or complication than would have been done. Previous technologies. Um, you know, they were talking about collaboration in the previous segment. We've been able to join a number of conferences for that, virtually including one that was supposed to be held in Boston, but another one that was held out of the University of Heidelberg in Germany. And, uh, this is sort of things that in some ways, the pandemic is pushing people towards greater collaboration than they would have been able to do. Had it all but in person. >>Yeah, we did. Uh, the cube did live works a couple years ago in Boston. It was awesome show. And I think, you know, with this whole trend toward digit, I call it the Force march to digital. Thanks to cove it I think that's just gonna continue. Thio grow. Rafael. What if you could describe the process that you use to better understand diseases? And what's your organization's involvement? Been in more detail, addressing the cove in pandemic. >>Um, so so we have the bio be structured in, Um um in a way that foster so the combination of technology and science. So we have to scientific tracks, one about infectious diseases and the other one about understanding just basic human biology, how the human body functions, and especially how the cells in the human body function on how they're organized to create tissues in the body. On Ben, it has this set of platforms. Um, mind is one of them by engineering that are all technology rated. So we have data science platform, all about data analysis, machine learning, things like that. Um, we have a mass spectrometry platform is all about mass spectrometry technologies to, um, exploit those ones in service for the scientist on. We have a genomics platform that it's all about sequencing DNA and are gonna, um and then an advanced microscopy. It's all about developing technologies, uh, to look at things with advanced microscopes and developed technologies to marry computation on microscopy. So, um, the scientists set the agenda and the platforms, we just serve their needs, support their needs, and hopefully develop technologies that help them do their experiments better, faster, or allow them to the experiment that they couldn't do in any other way before. Um And so with cove, it because we have that very strong group of scientists that work on have been working on infectious disease before, and especially in viruses, we've been able to very quickly pivot to working on that s O. For example, my team was able to build pretty quickly a machine to automatically purified proteins on is being used to purify all these different important proteins in the cove. It virus the SARS cov to virus Onda. We're sending some of those purified proteins all over the world. Two scientists that are researching the virus and trying to figure out how to develop vaccines, understand how the virus affects the body and all that. Um, so some of the machines we built are having a very direct impact on this. Um, Also for the copy testing lab, we were able to very quickly develop some very simple machines that allowed the lab to function sort of faster and more efficiently. Sort of had a little bit of automation in places where we couldn't find commercial machines that would do it. >>Um, eso Matt. I mean, you gotta be listening to this and thinking about Okay, So someday your students are gonna be working at organizations like like, like Bio Hub and Silver Side. And you know, a lot of young people they're just don't know about you guys, but like my kids, they're really passionate about changing the world. You know, there's way more important than you know, the financial angles and it z e. I gotta believe you're seeing that you're right in the front lines there. >>Really? Um, in fact, when I started the curriculum six or seven years ago, one of the first bits of feedback I got from my students is they said Okay, this is a lot of fun. So I had my students designing projects and programming microcontrollers raspberry, PiS and order we nose and things like that. The first bit of feedback I got from students was they said Okay, when do we get to impact the world? I've heard engineering >>is about >>making the world a better place, and robots are fun and all, but, you know, where is the real impact? And so um, dude, yeah, thanks to the guidance of my students, I'm baking that Maurin. Now I'm like day one of engineering one. We talk about how the things that the tools they're learning and the skills they're gaining, uh, eventually, you know, very soon could be could be used to make the world a better place. >>You know, we all probably heard that famous line by Jeff Hammer Barker. The greatest minds of my generation are trying to figure out how to get people to click on ads. I think we're really generally generationally, finally, at the point where young students and engineering a really, you know, a passionate about affecting society. I wanna get into the product, you know, side and understand how each of you are using on shape and and the value that that it brings. Maybe Raphael, you could start how long you've been using it. You know, what's your experience with it? Let's let's start there. >>I begin for about two years, and I switched to it with some trepidation. You know, I was used to always using the traditional product that you have to install on your computer, that everybody uses that. So I was kind of locked into that. But I started being very frustrated with the way it worked, um, and decided to give on ship chance. Which reputation? Because any change always, you know, causes anxiety. Um, but very quickly my engineers started loving it, Uh, just because it's it's first of all, the learning curve wasn't very difficult at all. You can transfer from one from the traditional product to entree very quickly and easily. You can learn all the concepts very, very fast. It has all the functionality that we needed and and what's best is that it allows to do things that we couldn't do before or we couldn't do easily. Now we can access the our cat documents from anywhere in the world. Um, so when we're in the lab fabricating something or testing a machine, any computer we have next to us or a tablet or on iPhone, we can pull it up and look at the cad and check things or make changes. That's something that couldn't do before because before you had to pay for every installation off the software for the computer, and I couldn't afford to have 20 installations to have some computers with the cat ready to use them like once every six months would have been very inefficient. So we love that part. And the collaboration features are fantastic, especially now with Kobe, that we have to have all the remote meetings eyes fantastic, that you can have another person drive the cad while the whole team is watching that person change the model and do things and point to things that is absolutely revolutionary. We love it. The fact that you have very, very sophisticated version control before it was always a challenge asking people, please, if you create anniversary and apart, how do we name it so that people find it? And then you end up with all these collection of files with names that nobody ever remembers, what they are, the person left. And now nobody knows which version is the right one. A mess with on shape on the version ING system it has, and the fact that you can go back in history off the document and go back to previous version so easily and then go back to the press and version and explore the history of the part that is truly, um, just world changing for us, that we can do that so easily on for me as a manager to manage this collection of information that is critical for our operations. It makes it so much easier because everything is in one place. I don't have to worry about file servers that go down that I have to administer that have to have I t taken care off that have to figure how to keep access to people to those servers when they're at home, and they need a virtual private network and all of that mess disappears. I just simply give give a person in accounting on shape and then magically, they have access to everything in the way I want. And we can manage the lower documents and everything in a way that is absolutely fantastic. >>Feel what was your what? What were some of the concerns you had mentioned? You had some trepidation. Was it a performance? Was it security? You know some of the traditional cloud stuff, and I'm curious as to how, How, whether any of those act manifested really that you had to manage. What were your concerns? >>Look, the main concern is how long is it going to take for everybody in the team to learn to use the system like it and buy into it? Because I don't want to have my engineers using tools against their will write. I want everybody to be happy because that's how they're productive. They're happy, and they enjoyed the tools they have. That was my main concern. I was a little bit worried about the whole concept of not having the files in a place where I couldn't quote unquote seat in some server and on site, but that That's kind of an outdated concept, right? So that took a little bit of a mind shift, but very quickly. Then I started thinking, Look, I have a lot of documents on Google Drive. Like, I don't worry about that. Why would I worry about my cat on on shape, right? Is the same thing. So I just needed to sort of put things in perspective that way. Um, the other, um, you know, the concern was the learning curve, right? Is like, how is he Will be for everybody to and for me to learn it on whether it had all of the features that we needed. And there were a few features that I actually discussed with, um uh, Cody at on shape on, they were actually awesome about using their scripting language in on shape to sort of mimic some of the features of the old cat, uh, in on, shaped in a way that actually works even better than the old system. So it was It was amazing. Yeah, >>Great. Thank you for that, Philip. What's your experience been? Maybe you could take us through your journey within shape. >>Sure. So we've been we've been using on shaped silver side for coming up on about four years now, and we love it. We're very happy with it. We have a very modular product line, so we make anything from detectors that would go into backpacks. Two vehicles, two very large things that a shipping container would go through and saw. Excuse me. Shape helps us to track and collaborate faster on the design. Have multiple people working a same time on a project. And it also helps us to figure out if somebody else comes to us and say, Hey, I want something new how we congrats modules from things that we already have put them together and then keep track of the design development and the different branches and ideas that we have, how they all fit together. A za design comes together, and it's just been fantastic from a mechanical engineering background. I will also say that having used a number of different systems and solid works was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Before I got using on shape, I went, Wow, this is amazing and I really don't want to design in any other platform. After after getting on Lee, a little bit familiar with it. >>You know, it's funny, right? I'll have the speed of technology progression. I was explaining to some young guns the other day how I used to have a daytime er and that was my life. And if I lost that daytime, er I was dead. And I don't know how we weigh existed without, you know, Google maps eso we get anywhere, I don't know, but, uh but so So, Matt, you know, it's interesting to think about, you know, some of the concerns that Raphael brought up, you hear? For instance, you know, all the time. Wow. You know, I get my Amazon bill at the end of the month that zip through the roof in, But the reality is that Yeah, well, maybe you are doing more, but you're doing things that you couldn't have done before. And I think about your experience in teaching and educating. I mean, you so much more limited in terms of the resource is that you would have had to be able to educate people. So what's your experience been with With on shape and what is it enabled? >>Um, yeah, it was actually talking before we went with on shape. We had a previous CAD program, and I was talking to my vendor about it, and he let me know that we were actually one of the biggest CAD shops in the state. Because if you think about it a really big program, you know, really big company might employ. 5, 10, 15, 20 cad guys, right? I mean, when I worked for a large defense contractor, I think there were probably 20 of us as the cad guys. I now have about 300 students doing cat. So there's probably more students with more hours of cat under their belt in my building than there were when I worked for the big defense contractor. Um, but like you mentioned, uh, probably our biggest hurdle is just re sources. And so we want We want one of things I've always prided myself and trying to do in this. Programs provide students with access two tools and skills that they're going to see either in college or in the real world. So it's one of the reason we went with a big professional cad program. There are, you know, sort of K 12 oriented software and programs and things. But, you know, I want my kids coding and python and using slack and using professional type of tools on DSO when it comes to cat. That's just that That was a really hurt. I mean, you know, you could spend $30,000 on one seat of, you know, professional level cad program, and then you need a $30,000 computer to run it on if you're doing a heavy assemblies, Um and so one of my dreams And it was always just a crazy dream. And I was the way I would always pitcher in my school system and say, someday I'm gonna have a kid on a school issued chromebook in subsidized housing, on public WiFi doing professional level bad and that that was a crazy statement until a couple of years ago. So we're really excited that I literally and you know, March and you said the forced march, the forced march into, you know, modernity, March 13th kids sitting in my engineering lab that we spent a lot of money on doing cad March 14th. Those kids were at home on their school issued chromebooks on public WiFi, uh, keeping their designs going and collaborating. And then, yeah, I could go on and on about some of the things you know, the features that we've learned since then they're even better. So it's not like this is some inferior, diminished version of Academy. There's so much about it. Well, I >>wanna I wanna ask you that I may be over my skis on this, but we're seeing we're starting to see the early days of the democratization of CAD and product design. It is the the citizen engineer, I mean, maybe insulting to the engineers in the room, But but is that we're beginning to see that >>I have to believe that everything moves into the cloud. Part of that is democratization that I don't need. I can whether you know, I think artists, you know, I could have a music studio in my basement with a nice enough software package. And Aiken, I could be a professional for now. My wife's a photographer. I'm not allowed to say that I could be a professional photographer with, you know, some cloud based software, and so, yeah, I do think that's part of what we're seeing is more and more technology is moving to the cloud. >>Philip. Rafael Anything you Dad, >>I think I mean, yeah, that that that combination of cloud based cat and then three d printing that is becoming more and more affordable on ubiquitous It's truly transformative, and I think for education is fantastic. I wish when I was a kid I had the opportunity to play with those kinds of things because I was always the late things. But, you know, the in a very primitive way. So, um, I think this is a dream for kids. Teoh be able to do this. And, um, yeah, there's so many other technologies coming on, like Arduino on all of these electronic things that live kids play at home very cheaply with things that back in my day would have been unthinkable. >>So we know there's a go ahead. Philip, please. >>We had a pandemic and silver site moved to a new manufacturing facility this year. I was just on the shop floor, talking with contractors, standing 6 ft apart, pointing at things. But through it all, our CAD system was completely unruffled. Nothing stopped in our development work. Nothing stopped in our support for existing systems in the field. We didn't have to think about it. We had other server issues, but none with our, you know, engineering cad, platform and product development in support world right ahead, which was cool, but also a in that's point. I think it's just really cool what you're doing with the kids. The most interesting secondary and college level engineering work that I did was project based, taken important problem to the world. Go solve it and that is what we do here. That is what my entire career has been. And I'm super excited to see. See what your students are going to be doing, uh, in there home classrooms on their chromebooks now and what they do building on that. >>Yeah, I'm super excited to see your kids coming out of college with engineering degrees because, yeah, I think that Project based experience is so much better than just sitting in a classroom, taking notes and doing math problems on day. I think it will give the kids a much better flavor. What engineering is really about Think a lot of kids get turned off by engineering because they think it's kind of dry because it's just about the math for some very abstract abstract concept on they are there. But I think the most important thing is just that hands on a building and the creativity off, making things that you can touch that you can see that you can see functioning. >>Great. So, you know, we all know the relentless pace of technology progression. So when you think about when you're sitting down with the folks that on shape and there the customer advisor for one of the things that that you want on shape to do that it doesn't do today >>I could start by saying, I just love some of the things that does do because it's such a modern platform. And I think some of these, uh, some some platforms that have a lot of legacy and a lot of history behind them. I think we're dragging some of that behind them. So it's cool to see a platform that seemed to be developed in the modern era, and so that Z it is the Google docks. And so the fact that collaboration and version ing and link sharing is and like platform agnostic abilities, the fact that that seems to be just built into the nature of the thing so far, That's super exciting. As far as things that, uh, to go from there, Um, I don't know, >>Other than price. >>You can't say >>I >>can't say lower price. >>Yeah, so far on P. D. C. S that work with us. Really? Well, so I'm not complaining. There you there, >>right? Yeah. Yeah. No gaps, guys. Whitespace, Come on. >>We've been really enjoying the three week update. Cadence. You know, there's a new version every three weeks and we don't have to install it. We just get all the latest and greatest goodies. One of the trends that we've been following and enjoying is the the help with a revision management and release work flows. Um, and I know that there's more than on shape is working on that we're very excited for, because that's a big important part about making real hardware and supporting it in the field. Something that was cool. They just integrated Cem markup capability. In the last release that took, we were doing that anyway, but we were doing it outside of on shapes. And now we get to streamline our workflow and put it in the CAD system where We're making those changes anyway when we're reviewing drawings and doing this kind of collaboration. And so I think from our perspective, we continue to look forward. Toa further progress on that. There's a lot of capability in the cloud that I think they're just kind of scratching the surface on you, >>right? I would. I mean, you're you're asking to knit. Pick. I would say one of the things that I would like to see is is faster regeneration speed. There are a few times with convicts, necessities that regenerating the document takes a little longer than I would like. It's not a serious issue, but anyway, I I'm being spoiled, >>you know? That's good. I've been doing this a long time, and I like toe ask that question of practitioners and to me, it It's a signal like when you're nit picking and that's what you're struggling to knit. Pick that to me is a sign of a successful product, and and I wonder, I don't know, uh, have the deep dive into the architecture. But are things like alternative processors. You're seeing them hit the market in a big way. Uh, you know, maybe helping address the challenge, But I'm gonna ask you the big, chewy question now. Then we maybe go to some audience questions when you think about the world's biggest problems. I mean, we're global pandemics, obviously top of mind. You think about nutrition, you know, feeding the global community. We've actually done a pretty good job of that. But it's not necessarily with the greatest nutrition, climate change, alternative energy, the economic divides. You've got geopolitical threats and social unrest. Health care is a continuing problem. What's your vision for changing the world and how product innovation for good and be applied to some of the the problems that that you all are passionate about? Big question. Who wants toe start? >>Not biased. But for years I've been saying that if you want to solve the economy, the environment, uh, global unrest, pandemics, education is the case. If you wanna. If you want to, um, make progress in those in those realms, I think funding funding education is probably gonna pay off pretty well. >>Absolutely. And I think Stam is key to that. I mean, all of the ah lot of the well being that we have today and then industrialized countries. Thanks to science and technology, right improvements in health care, improvements in communication, transportation, air conditioning. Um, every aspect of life is touched by science and technology. So I think having more kids studying and understanding that is absolutely key. Yeah, I agree, >>Philip, you got anything to add? >>I think there's some big technical problems in the world today, Raphael and ourselves there certainly working on a couple of them. Think they're also collaboration problems and getting everybody to be able to pull together instead of pulling separately and to be able to spur the ideas on words. So that's where I think the education side is really exciting. What Matt is doing and it just kind of collaboration in general when we could do provide tools to help people do good work. Uh, that is, I think, valuable. >>Yeah, I think that's a very good point. And along those lines, we have some projects that are about creating very low cost instruments for low research settings, places in Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, so that they can do, um, um, biomedical research that it's difficult to do in those place because they don't have the money to buy the fancy lab machines that cost $30,000 an hour. Um, so we're trying to sort of democratize some of those instruments. And I think thanks to tools like Kahn shape then is easier, for example, to have a conversation with somebody in Africa and show them the design that we have and discuss the details of it with them on. But it's amazing, right to have somebody, you know, 10 time zones away, Um, looking really life in real time with you about your design and discussing the details or teaching them how to build a machine, right? Because, um, you know, they have a three D printer. You can you can just give them the design and say like, you build it yourself, uh, even cheaper than and, you know, also billing and shipping it there. Um, so all that that that aspect of it is also super important. I think for any of these efforts to improve some of the hardest part was in the world for climate change. Do you say, as you say, poverty, nutrition issues? Um, you know, availability of water. You have that project at about finding water. Um, if we can also help deploy technologies that teach people remotely how to create their own technologies or how to build their own systems that will help them solve those forms locally. I think that's very powerful. >>Yeah, the point about education is right on. I think some people in the audience may be familiar with the work of Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee, the second machine age where they sort of put forth the premise that, uh, is it laid it out. Look, for the first time in history, machines air replacing humans from a cognitive perspective. Machines have always replaced humans, but that's gonna have an impact on jobs. But the answer is not toe protect the past from the future. The answer is education and public policy that really supports that. So I couldn't agree more. I think it's a really great point. Um, we have We do have some questions from the audience. If if we could If I can ask you guys, um, you know, this one kind of stands out. How do you see artificial intelligence? I was just talking about machine intelligence. Um, how do you see that? Impacting the design space guys trying to infuse a I into your product development. Can you tell me? >>Um, absolutely, like, we're using AI for some things, including some of these very low cost instruments that will hopefully help us diagnose certain diseases, especially this is that are very prevalent in the Third World. Um, and some of those diagnostics are these days done by thes armies of technicians that are trained to look under the microscope. But, um, that's a very slow process. Is very error prone and having machine learning systems that can to the same diagnosis faster, cheaper and also little machines that can be taken to very remote places to these villages that have no access to a fancy microscope. To look at a sample from a patient that's very powerful. And I we don't do this, but I have read quite a bit about how certain places air using a Tribune attorneys to actually help them optimize designs for parts. So you get these very interesting looking parts that you would have never thought off a person would have never thought off, but that are incredibly light ink. Earlier, strong and I have all sort of properties that are interesting thanks to artificial intelligence machine learning in particular >>yet another. The advantage you get when when your work is in the cloud I've seen. I mean, there's just so many applications that so if the radiology scan is in the cloud and the radiologist is goes to bed at night, Radiologist could come in in the morning and and say, Oh, the machine while you were sleeping was using artificial intelligence to scan these 40,000 images. And here's the five that we picked out that we think you should take a closer look at. Or like Raphael said, I can design my part. My, my, my, my, my you know, mount or bracket or whatever and go to sleep. And then I wake up in the morning. The machine has improved. It for me has made it strider strider stronger and lighter. Um And so just when your when your work is in the cloud, that's just that's a really cool advantage that you get that you can have machines doing some of your design work for you. >>Yeah, we've been watching, uh, you know, this week is this month, I guess is AWS re invent and it's just amazing to see how much effort is coming around machine learning machine intelligence. You know Amazon has sage maker Google's got, you know, embedded you no ML and big query. Uh, certainly Microsoft with Azure is doing tons of stuff and machine learning. I think the point there is that that these things will be infused in tow R and D and in tow software product by the vendor community. And you all will apply that to your business and and build value through the unique data that your collecting, you know, in your ecosystems. And and that's how you add value. You don't have to be necessarily, you know, developers of artificial intelligence, but you have to be practitioners to apply that. Does that make sense to you, Philip? >>Yeah, absolutely. And I think your point about value is really well chosen. We see AI involved from the physics simulations all the way up to interpreting radiation data, and that's where the value question, I think, is really important because it's is the output of the AI giving helpful information that the people that need to be looking at it. So if it's curating a serious of radiation alert, saying, Hey, like these air the anomalies. You need to look at eyes it, doing that in a way that's going to help a good response on. In some cases, the II is only as good as the people. That sort of gave it a direction and turn it loose. And you want to make sure that you don't have biases or things like that underlying your AI that they're going to result in less than helpful outcomes coming from it. So we spend quite a lot of time thinking about how do we provide the right outcomes to people who are who are relying on our systems? >>That's a great point, right? Humans air biased and humans build models, so models are inherently biased. But then the software is hitting the market. That's gonna help us identify those biases and help us, you know? Of course. Correct. So we're entering Cem some very exciting times, guys. Great conversation. With me is John McElheny, who is one of the co founders of On Shape and is now the VP of strategy at PTC. John, it's good to see you. Thanks for making the time to come on the program. Thanks, Dave. So we heard earlier some of the accomplishments that you've made since the acquisition. How has the acquisition affected your strategy? Maybe you could talk about what resource is PTC brought to the table that allowed you toe sort of rethink or evolve your strategy? What can you share with us? >>Sure. You know, a year ago, when when John and myself met with Jim Pepperman early on is we're we're pondering. Started joining PTC one of things became very clear is that we had a very clear shared vision about how we could take the on shape platform and really extended for, for all of the PTC products, particular sort of their augmented reality as well as their their thing works or the i o. T business and their product. And so from the very beginning there was a clear strategy about taking on shape, extending the platform and really investing, um, pretty significantly in the product development as well as go to market side of things, uh, toe to bring on shape out to not only the PTC based but sort of the broader community at large. So So So PTC has been a terrific, terrific, um, sort of partner as we've we've gonna go on after this market together. Eso We've added a lot of resource and product development side of things. Ah, lot of resource and they go to market and customer success and support. So, really, on many fronts, that's been both. Resource is as well a sort of support at the corporate level from from a strategic standpoint and then in the field, we've had wonderful interactions with many large enterprise customers as well as the PTC channels. So it's been really a great a great year. >>Well, and you think about the challenges of in your business going to SAS, which you guys, you know, took on that journey. You know, 78 years ago. Uh, it's not trivial for a lot of companies to make that transition, especially a company that's been around as long as PTC. So So I'm wondering how much you know, I was just asking you How about what PCP TC brought to the table? E gotta believe you're bringing a lot to the table to in terms of the mindset, uh, even things is, is mundane is not the right word, but things like how you compensate salespeople, how you interact with customers, the notion of a service versus a product. I wonder if you could address >>that. Yeah, it's a it's a really great point. In fact, after we had met Jim last year, John and I one of the things we walked out in the seaport area in Boston, one of things we sort of said is, you know, Jim really gets what we're trying to do here and and part of let me bring you into the thinking early on. Part of what Jim talked about is there's lots of, you know, installed base sort of software that's inside of PTC base. That's helped literally thousands of customers around the world. But the idea of moving to sass and all that it entails both from a technology standpoint but also a cultural standpoint. Like How do you not not just compensate the sales people as an example? But how do you think about customer success? In the past, it might have been that you had professional services that you bring out to a customer, help them deploy your solutions. Well, when you're thinking about a SAS based offering, it's really critical that you get customers successful with it. Otherwise, you may have turned, and you know it will be very expensive in terms of your business long term. So you've got to get customers success with software in the very beginning. So you know, Jim really looked at on shape and he said that John and I, from a cultural standpoint, you know, a lot of times companies get acquired and they've acquired technology in the past that they integrate directly into into PTC and then sort of roll it out through their products, are there just reached channel, he said. In some respects, John John, think about it as we're gonna take PTC and we want to integrate it into on shape because we want you to share with us both on the sales side and customer success on marketing on operations. You know all the things because long term, we believe the world is a SAS world, that the whole industry is gonna move too. So really, it was sort of an inverse in terms of the thought process related to normal transactions >>on That makes a lot of sense to me. You mentioned Sharon turns the silent killer of a SAS company, and you know, there's a lot of discussion, you know, in the entrepreneurial community because you live this, you know what's the best path? I mean today, You see, you know, if you watch Silicon Valley double, double, triple triple, but but there's a lot of people who believe, and I wonder, if you come in there is the best path to, you know, in the X Y axis. If if it's if it's uh, growth on one and retention on the other axis. What's the best way to get to the upper right on? Really? The the best path is probably make sure you've nailed obviously the product market fit, But make sure that you can retain customers and then throw gas on the fire. You see a lot of companies they burn out trying to grow too fast, but they haven't figured out, you know that. But there's too much churn. They haven't figured out those metrics. I mean, obviously on shape. You know, you were sort of a pioneer in here. I gotta believe you've figured out that customer retention before you really, You know, put the pedal to the >>metal. Yeah, and you know, growth growth can mask a lot of things, but getting getting customers, especially the engineering space. Nobody goes and sits there and says, Tomorrow we're gonna go and and, you know, put 100 users on this and and immediately swap out all of our existing tools. These tools are very rich and deep in terms of capability, and they become part of the operational process of how a company designs and builds products. So any time anybody is actually going through the purchasing process. Typically, they will run a try along or they'll run a project where they look at. Kind of What? What is this new solution gonna help them dio. How are we gonna orient ourselves for success? Longer term. So for us, you know, getting new customers and customer acquisition is really critical. But getting those customers to actually deploy the solution to be successful with it. You know, we like to sort of, say, the marketing or the lead generation and even some of the initial sales. That's sort of like the Kindle ing. But the fire really starts when customers deploy it and get successful. The solution because they bring other customers into the fold. And then, of course, if they're successful with it, you know, then in fact, you have negative turn which, ironically, means growth in terms of your inside of your install. Bates. >>Right? And you've seen that with some of the emerging, you know, SAS companies, where you're you're actually you know, when you calculate whatever its net retention or renew ALS, it's actually from a dollar standpoint. It's up in the high nineties or even over 100%. >>So >>and that's a trend we're gonna continue. See, I >>wonder >>if we could sort of go back. Uh, and when you guys were starting on shape, some of the things that you saw that you were trying to strategically leverage and what's changed, you know, today we were talking. I was talking to John earlier about in a way, you kinda you kinda got a blank slate is like doing another startup. >>You're >>not. Obviously you've got installed base and customers to service, but But it's a new beginning for you guys. So one of the things that you saw then you know, cloud and and sas and okay, but that's we've been there, done that. What are you seeing? You know today? >>Well, you know, So So this is a journey, of course, that that on shape on its own has gone through it had I'll sort of say, you know, several iterations, both in terms of of of, you know, how do you How do you get customers? How do you How do you get them successful? How do you grow those customers? And now that we've been part of PTC, the question becomes okay. One, There is certainly a higher level of credibility that helps us in terms of our our megaphone is much bigger than it was when we're standalone company. But on top of that now, figuring out how to work with their channel with their direct sales force, you know, they have, um, for example, you know, very large enterprises. Well, many of those customers are not gonna go in forklift out their existing solution to replace it with with on shape. However, many of them do have challenges in their supply chain and communications with contractors and vendors across the globe. And so, you know, finding our fit inside of those large enterprises as they extend out with their their customers is a very interesting area that we've really been sort of incremental to to PTC. And then, you know, they they have access to lots of other technology, like the i o. T business. And now, of course, the augmented reality business that that we can bring things to bear. For example, in the augmented reality world, they've they've got something called expert capture. And this is essentially imagine, you know, in a are ah, headset that allows you to be ableto to speak to it, but also capture images still images in video. And you could take somebody who's doing their task and capture literally the steps that they're taking its geo location and from their builds steps for new employees to be, we'll learn and understand how todo use that technology to help them do their job better. Well, when they do that, if there is replacement products or variation of of some of the tools that that they built the original design instruction set for they now have another version. Well, they have to manage multiple versions. Well, that's what on shape is really great at doing and so taking our technology and helping their solutions as well. So it's not only expanding our customer footprint, it's expanding the application footprint in terms of how we can help them and help customers. >>So that leads me to the tam discussion and again, as part of your strategist role. How do you think about that? Was just talking to some of your customers earlier about the democratization of cat and engineering? You know, I kind of joked, sort of like citizen engineering, but but so that you know, the demographics are changing the number of users potentially that can access the products because the it's so much more of a facile experience. How are you thinking about the total available market? >>It really is a great question, You know, it used to be when you when you sold boxes of software, it was how many engineers were out there. And that's the size of the market. The fact that matter is now when, When you think about access to that information, that data is simply a pane of glass. Whether it's a computer, whether it's a laptop, UH, a a cell phone or whether it's a tablet, the ability to to use different vehicles, access information and data expands the capabilities and power of a system to allow feedback and iteration. I mean, one of the one of the very interesting things is in technology is when you can take something and really unleash it to a larger audience and builds, you know, purpose built applications. You can start to iterate, get better feedback. You know there's a classic case in the clothing industry where Zara, you know, is a fast sort of turnaround. Agile manufacturer. And there was a great New York Times article written a couple years ago. My wife's a fan of Zara, and I think she justifies any purchases by saying, You know, Zara, you gotta purchase it now. Otherwise it may not be there the next time. Yet you go back to the store. They had some people in a store in New York that had this woman's throw kind of covering Shaw. And they said, Well, it would be great if we could have this little clip here so we can hook it through or something. And they sent a note back toe to the factory in Spain, and literally two weeks later they had, you know, 4000 of these things in store, and they sold out because they had a closed loop and iterative process. And so if we could take information and allow people access in multiple ways through different devices and different screens, that could be very specific information that, you know, we remove a lot of the engineering data book, bring the end user products conceptually to somebody that would have had to wait months to get the actual physical prototype, and we could get feedback well, Weaken have a better chance of making sure whatever product we're building is the right product when it ultimately gets delivered to a customer. So it's really it's a much larger market that has to be thought of rather than just the kind of selling A boxes software to an engineer. >>That's a great story. And again, it's gonna be exciting for you guys to see that with. The added resource is that you have a PTC, Um, so let's talk. I promise people we wanna talk about Atlas. Let's talk about the platform. A little bit of Atlas was announced last year. Atlas. For those who don't know it's a SAS space platform, it purports to go beyond product lifecycle management and you You're talking cloud like agility and scale to CAD and product design. But John, you could do a better job than I. What do >>we need to know about Atlas? Well, I think Atlas is a great description because it really is metaphorically sort of holding up all of the PTC applications themselves. But from the very beginning, when John and I met with Jim, part of what we were intrigued about was that he shared a vision that on shape was more than just going to be a cad authoring tool that, in fact, you know, in the past these engineering tools were very powerful, but they were very narrow in their purpose and focus. And we had specialty applications to manage the versions, etcetera. What we did in on shape is we kind of inverted that thinking. We built this collaboration and sharing engine at the core and then kind of wrap the CAD system around it. But that collaboration sharing and version ING engine is really powerful. And it was that vision that Jim had that he shared that we had from the beginning, which was, how do we take this thing to make a platform that could be used for many other applications inside of inside of any company? And so not only do we have a partner application area that is is much like the APP store or Google play store. Uh, that was sort of our first Stan Shih ation of this. This this platform. But now we're extending out to broader applications and much meatier applications. And internally, that's the thing works in the in the augmented reality. But there'll be other applications that ultimately find its way on top of this platform. And so they'll get all the benefits of of the collaboration, sharing the version ing the multi platform, multi device. And that's an extremely extremely, um, strategic leverage point for the company. >>You know, it's interesting, John, you mentioned the seaport before. So PTC, for those who don't know, built a beautiful facility down at the Seaport in Boston. And, of course, when PTC started, you know, back in the mid 19 eighties, there was nothing at the seaport s. >>So it's >>kind of kind of ironic, you know, we were way seeing the transformation of the seaport. We're seeing the transformation of industry and of course, PTC. And I'm sure someday you'll get back into that beautiful office, you know? Wait. Yeah, I'll bet. And, uh and but I wanna bring this up because I want I want you to talk about the future. How you how you see that our industry and you've observed this has moved from very product centric, uh, plat platform centric with sass and cloud. And now we're seeing ecosystems form around those products and platforms and data flowing through the ecosystem powering, you know, new innovation. I wonder if you could paint a picture for us of what the future looks like to you from your vantage point. >>Yeah, I think one of the key words you said there is data because up until now, data for companies really was sort of trapped in different applications. And it wasn't because people were nefarious and they want to keep it limited. It was just the way in which things were built. And, you know, when people use an application like on shape, what ends up happening is there their day to day interaction and everything that they do is actually captured by the platform. And, you know, we don't have access to that data. Of course it's it's the customer's data. But as as an artifact of them using the system than doing their day to day job, what's happening is they're creating huge amounts of information that can then be accessed and analyzed to help them both improve their design process, improve their efficiencies, improve their actual schedules in terms of making sure they can hit delivery times and be able to understand where there might be roadblocks in the future. So the way I see it is companies now are deploying SAS based tools like on shape and an artifact of them. Using that platform is that they have now analytics and tools to better understand and an instrument and manage their business. And then from there, I think you're going to see, because these systems are all you know extremely well. Architected allow through, you know, very structured AP. I calls to connect other SAS based applications. You're gonna start seeing closed loop sort of system. So, for example, people design using on shape, they end up going and deploying their system or installing it, or people use the end using products. People then may call back into the customers support line and report issues, problems, challenges. They'll be able to do traceability back to the underlying design. They'll be able to do trend analysis and defect analysis from the support lines and tie it back and closed loop the product design, manufacture, deployment in the field sort of cycles. In addition, you can imagine there's many things that air sort of as designed. But then when people go on site and they have to install it. There's some alterations modifications. Think about think about like a large air conditioning units for buildings. You go and you go to train and you get a large air conditioning unit that put up on top of building with a crane. They have to build all kinds of adaptors to make sure that that will fit inside of the particulars of that building. You know, with on shape and tools like this, you'll be able to not only take the design of what the air conditioning system might be, but also the all the adapter plates, but also how they installed it. So it sort of as designed as manufactured as stalled. And all these things can be traced, just like if you think about the transformation of customer service or customer contacts. In the early days, you used to have tools that were PC based tools called contact management solution, you know, kind of act or gold mine. And these were basically glorified Elektronik role in Texas. It had a customer names and they had phone numbers and whatever else. And Salesforce and Siebel, you know, these types of systems really broadened out the perspective of what a customer relationship? Waas. So it wasn't just the contact information it was, you know, How did they come to find out about you as a company? So all of the pre sort of marketing and then kind of what happens after they become a customer and it really was a 3 60 view. I think that 3 60 view gets extended to not just to the customers, but also tools and the products they use. And then, of course, the performance information that could come back to the manufacturer. So, you know, as an engineer, one of the things you learn about with systems is the following. And if you remember, when the CD first came out CDs that used to talk about four times over sampling or eight times over sampling and it was really kind of, you know, the fidelity the system. And we know from systems theory that the best way to improve the performance of a system is to actually have more feedback. The more feedback you have, the better system could be. And so that's why you get 16 60 for example, etcetera. Same thing here. The more feedback we have of different parts of a company that a better performance, The company will be better customer relationships. Better, uh, overall financial performance as well. So that's that's the view I have of how these systems all tied together. >>It's a great vision in your point about the data is I think right on. It used to be so fragmented in silos, and in order to take a system view, you've gotta have a system view of the data. Now, for years, we've optimized maybe on one little component of the system and that sometimes we lose sight of the overall outcome. And so what you just described, I think is, I think sets up. You know very well as we exit. Hopefully soon we exit this this covert era on John. I hope that you and I can sit down face to face at a PTC on shape event in the near term >>in the seaport in the >>seaport would tell you that great facility toe have have an event for sure. Big changes in this market and about, you know, a little Before It's been, you know, when you get acquired, You've got a passion for the babies that you you helped birth. And you know, I look back Sure to enjoy And and you were and still are a What kept me in the room, you know, in terms of the industrial world was seeing And you just launched construct capital this year, right in the middle of a pandemic and you know, half of the GDP in the US and have been very under invested. And I want to understand why you feel it's important to be early. so I like to work with founders and teams when they're, you know, Uh, and one of you could sort of connect the dots over time. you try to eliminate the risk Sa's much as you can, but I always say, I don't mind taking a risk And I could see the problems You know, a few years ago, people were like cloud, you know, And now even embracement in the cova driven new normal. And and but But, you know, the bet was on the SAS model was right for Crick had and I think you know, the closer you get to the shop floor in the production environment. So let's bring it, you know, toe today's you know, I didn't exit anything. know, I love you and I don't like that term exit. It's not just the technology is how you go to market and the whole business being run and how you support You know, a lot of baggage, you know, our customers pulling you in a lot of different directions I mentioned the breath of the product with new things PTC the SAS components of on shape for things like revision management And you get good pipeline from that. Um, Aziz, John will tell you I'm constantly one of the questions is for the dream team. pipeline to us in the world of some new things that are happening that we wouldn't see if you know you've shown Are you able to reach? And so the teacher can say to the students, They have to have Internet access, you know, going forward. Thank you. Okay, so thank you guys. Okay, let me ask each of you because you're all doing such interesting and compelling San Francisco, Stanford University and the University California Berkeley on. it was announced at the end of 2016, and we actually started operation with at the beginning of 2017, I mean, these things take time. of course, that's you mentioned now with co vid, um, we've been able to do a lot of very cool Now, Now, Philip, you What you do is mind melting. And as you might imagine, there's some really cool applications do. We do both its's to plowshares. kind of scaling the brain power for for the future. Uh, you know, graduating after senior year with, like, seven years of engineering under their belt I mean, you know, Cuba's. And so that's one of the reasons we keep pushing back. And I think in many ways, the products that you build, you know, our similar. Um, you know, they were talking about collaboration in the previous segment. And I think, you know, with this whole trend toward digit, I call it the Force march to digital. and especially how the cells in the human body function on how they're organized to create tissues You know, there's way more important than you know, the financial angles one of the first bits of feedback I got from my students is they said Okay, this is a lot of fun. making the world a better place, and robots are fun and all, but, you know, where is the real impact? I wanna get into the product, you know, side and understand how each of that person change the model and do things and point to things that is absolutely revolutionary. What were some of the concerns you had mentioned? Um, the other, um, you know, the concern was the learning curve, right? Maybe you could take us through your journey within I want something new how we congrats modules from things that we already have put them together And I don't know how we weigh existed without, you know, Google maps eso we I mean, you know, you could spend $30,000 on one seat wanna I wanna ask you that I may be over my skis on this, but we're seeing we're starting to see the early days I can whether you know, I think artists, you know, But, you know, So we know there's a go ahead. it. We had other server issues, but none with our, you know, engineering cad, the creativity off, making things that you can touch that you can see that you can see one of the things that that you want on shape to do that it doesn't do today abilities, the fact that that seems to be just built into the nature of the thing so There you there, right? There's a lot of capability in the cloud that I mean, you're you're asking to knit. of the the problems that that you all are passionate about? But for years I've been saying that if you want to solve the I mean, all of the ah lot to be able to pull together instead of pulling separately and to be able to spur the Um, you know, availability of water. you guys, um, you know, this one kind of stands out. looking parts that you would have never thought off a person would have never thought off, And here's the five that we picked out that we think you should take a closer look at. You don't have to be necessarily, you know, developers of artificial intelligence, And you want to make sure that you don't have biases or things like that I can't thank you enough for spending the time with us and sharing And he's currently the VP of strategy at PTC. And so from the very beginning not the right word, but things like how you compensate salespeople, how you interact with customers, In the past, it might have been that you had professional services that you bring out to a customer, I mean today, You see, you know, if you watch Silicon Valley double, And then, of course, if they're successful with it, you know, then in fact, you have negative turn which, know, when you calculate whatever its net retention or renew ALS, it's actually from a dollar standpoint. and that's a trend we're gonna continue. some of the things that you saw that you were trying to strategically leverage and what's changed, So one of the things that you saw then you know, cloud and and sas and okay, And this is essentially imagine, you know, in a are ah, headset that allows you to but but so that you know, the demographics are changing the number that could be very specific information that, you know, we remove a lot of the engineering data book, And again, it's gonna be exciting for you guys to see that with. tool that, in fact, you know, in the past these engineering tools were very started, you know, back in the mid 19 eighties, there was nothing at the seaport s. I wonder if you could paint a picture for us of what the future looks like to you from your vantage point. In the early days, you used to have tools that were PC I hope that you and I can sit down face to face at seaport would tell you that great facility toe have have an event for sure. It's a very exciting, all live program. We're gonna look at how product innovation has evolved, where it's going and how engineers, entrepreneurs and educators are applying cutting edge, cutting edge product development techniques and technology to change our world. You know, the pandemic is, of course, profoundly impacted society and altered how individuals and organizations they're gonna be thinking about and approaching the coming decade. Leading technologists, engineers, product developers and educators have responded to the new challenges that we're facing from creating lifesaving products to helping students learn from home toe how to apply the latest product development techniques and solve the world's hardest problems. And in this program, you'll hear from some of the world's leading experts and practitioners on how product development and continuous innovation has evolved, how it's being applied toe positive, positively affect society and importantly where it's going in the coming decades. So let's get started with our first session fueling Tech for good. And with me is John Herstek, who is the president of the Suffers, a service division of PTC, which required on shape just over a year ago, where John was the CEO and co founder. And Dana Grayson is here. She is the co founder and general partner at Construct Capital, a new venture capital firm. Folks, welcome to the program. Thanks so much for coming on. Great >>to be here, Dave. >>All right, John. You're very welcome. Dana. Look, John, let's get into it for first. A belated congratulations on the acquisition of Von Shape. That was an awesome seven year journey for your company. Tell our audience a little bit about the story of on shape, but take us back to Day zero. Why did you and your co founders start on shape? Well, >>actually, start before on shaping the You know, David, I've been in this business for almost 40 years. The business of building software tools for product developers and I had been part of some previous products in the industry and companies that had been in their era. Big changes in this market and about, you know, a little Before founding on shape, we started to see the problems product development teams were having with the traditional tools of that era years ago, and we saw the opportunity presented by Cloud Web and Mobile Technology. And we said, Hey, we could use Cloud Web and Mobile to solve the problems of product developers make their Their business is run better. But we have to build an entirely new system, an entirely new company, to do it. And that's what on shapes about. >>Well, so notwithstanding the challenges of co vid and difficulties this year, how is the first year been as, Ah, division of PTC for you guys? How's business? Anything you can share with us? >>Yeah, our first year of PTC has been awesome. It's been, you know, when you get acquired, Dave, you never You know, you have great optimism, but you never know what life will really be like. It's sort of like getting married or something, you know, until you're really doing it, you don't know. And so I'm happy to say that one year into our acquisition, a TPI TC on shape is thriving. It's worked out better than I could have imagined a year ago. Along always, I mean sales are up. In Q four, our new sales rate grew 80% vs Excuse me, our fiscal Q four Q three. In the calendar year, it grew 80% compared to the year before. Our educational uses skyrocketing with around 400% growth, most recently year to year of students and teachers and co vid. And we've launched a major cloud platform using the core of on shape technology called Atlas. So, um, just tons of exciting things going on a TTC. >>That's awesome. But thank you for sharing some of those metrics. And of course, you're very humble individual. You know, people should know a little bit more about you mentioned, you know, we founded solid works, go founded solid, where I actually found it solid works. You had a great exit in the late nineties. But what I really appreciate is, you know, you're an entrepreneur. You've got a passion for the babies that you helped birth. You stayed with the salt systems for a number of years. The company that quiet, solid works well over a decade. And and, of course, you and I have talked about how you participated in the M I t blackjack team. You know, back in the day a Z I say you're very understated, for somebody was so accomplished. So well, >>that's kind of you. But I tend to I tend Thio always keep my eye more on what's ahead. You know what's next then? And you know, I look back Sure to enjoy it and learn from it about what I can put toe work, making new memories, making new successes. >>I love it. Okay, let's bring Dana into the conversation. Hello, Dana. And you Look, you were fairly early investor in on shape when you were with any A. And I think it was like it was a Siri's B. But it was very right close after the A raise. And and you were and still are a big believer in industrial transformation. So take us back. What did you see about on shape back then? That that excited you? >>Thanks. Thanks for that. Yeah. I was lucky to be a early investment in shape. You know, the things that actually attracted me. Don shape were largely around John and, uh, the team. They're really setting out to do something, as John says humbly, something totally new, but really building off of their background was a large part of it. Um, but, you know, I was really intrigued by the design collaboration side of the product. Um, I would say that's frankly what originally attracted me to it. What kept me in the room, you know, in terms of the industrial world was seeing just if you start with collaboration around design what that does to the overall industrial product lifecycle accelerating manufacturing just, you know, modernizing, manufacturing, just starting with design. So I'm really thankful to the on shape guys, because it was one of the first investments I've made that turned me on to the whole sector. And, wow, just such a great pleasure to work with with John and the whole team there. Now see what they're doing inside PTC, >>and you just launched construct capital this year, right in the middle of a pandemic and which is awesome. I love it. And you're focused on early stage investing. Maybe tell us a little bit about construct capital. What? Your investment thesis is and you know, one of the big waves that you're hoping to ride. >>Sure, it construct it is literally lifting out of any what I was doing there, um uh, you're on shape. I went on to invest in companies such as desktop metal and Tulip, to name a couple of them form labs, another one in and around the manufacturing space. But our thesis it construct is broader than just, you know, manufacturing and industrial. It really incorporates all of what we'd call foundational industries that have let yet to be fully tech enabled or digitized. Manufacturing is a big piece of it. Supply chain, logistics, transportation and mobility or not, or other big pieces of it. And together they really drive, you know, half of the GDP in the US and have been very under invested. And frankly, they haven't attracted really great founders like Iran in droves. And I think that's going to change. We're seeing, um, entrepreneurs coming out of the tech world or staggolee into these industries and then bringing them back into the tech world, which is which is something that needs to happen. So John and team were certainly early pioneers and I think, you know, frankly, obviously, that voting with my feet that the next set, a really strong companies are going to come out of this space over the next decade. >>I think there's a huge opportunity to digitize the sort of traditionally non digital organizations. But Dana, you focused. I think it's it's accurate to say you're focused on even Mawr early stage investing now. And I want to understand why you feel it's important to be early. I mean, it's obviously riskier and reward e er, but what do you look for in companies and and founders like John >>Mhm, Um, you know, I think they're different styles of investing all the way up to public market investing. I've always been early stage investors, so I like to work with founders and teams when they're, you know, just starting out. Um, I happened to also think that we were just really early in the whole digital transformation of this world. You know, John and team have been, you know, back from solid works, etcetera around the space for a long time. But again, the downstream impact of what they're doing really changes the whole industry and and so we're pretty early and in digitally transforming that market. Um, so that's another reason why I wanna invest early now, because I do really firmly believe that the next set of strong companies and strong returns for my own investors will be in the spaces. Um, you know, what I look for in Founders are people that really see the world in a different way. And, you know, sometimes some people think of founders or entrepreneurs is being very risk seeking. You know, if you asked John probably and another successful entrepreneurs, they would call themselves sort of risk averse, because by the time they start the company, they really have isolated all the risk out of it and think that they have given their expertise or what they're seeing their just so compelled to go change something, eh? So I look for that type of attitude experience a Z. You can also tell from John. He's fairly humble. So humility and just focus is also really important. Um, that there's a that's a lot of it. Frankly, >>excellent. Thank you. And John, you got such a rich history in the space in one of you could sort of connect the dots over time. I mean, when you look back, what were the major forces that you saw in the market in in the early days? Uh, particularly days of on shape on how is that evolved? And what are you seeing today? Well, I >>think I touched on it earlier. Actually, could I just reflect on what Dana said about risk taking for just a quick one and say, throughout my life, from blackjack to starting solid works on shape, it's about taking calculated risks. Yes, you try to eliminate the risk sa's much as you can, but I always say, I don't mind taking a risk that I'm aware of, and I've calculated through as best I can. I don't like taking risks that I don't know I'm taking. >>That's right. You like to bet on >>sure things as much sure things, or at least where you feel you. You've done the research and you see them and you know they're there and you know, you, you you keep that in mind in the room, and I think that's great. And Dana did so much for us. Dana, I want to thank you again for all that you did it every step of the way from where we started. Thio, Thio You know your journey with us ended formally but continues informally. Now back to you. Um, Dave, I think question about the opportunity and how it's shaped up. Well, I think I touched on it earlier when I said It's about helping product developers. You know, our customers of the people build the future of manufactured goods. Anything you think of that would be manufacturing factory. You know, the chair you're sitting in machine that made your coffee. You know, the computer you're using that trucks that drive by on the street, all the covert product research, the equipment being used to make vaccines. All that stuff is designed by someone, and our job is given the tools to do it better. And I could see the problems that those product developers had that we're slowing them down with using the computing systems of the time. When we built solid works, that was almost 30 years ago. People don't realize that it was in the early >>nineties, and, you know, we did the >>best we could for the early nineties, but what we did, we didn't anticipate the world of today. And so people were having problems with just installing the systems. Dave, you wouldn't believe how hard it is to install these systems. You need a spec up a special windows computer, you know, and make sure you've got all the memory and graphics you need and getting to get that set up. You need to make sure the device drivers air, right, install a big piece of software. Ah, license key. I'm not making this up. They're still around. You may not even know what those are. You know, Dennis laughing because, you know, zero cool people do things like this anymore on but only runs some windows. You want a second user to use it? They need a copy. They need a code. Are they on the same version? It's a nightmare. The teams change. You know? You just say, Well, get everyone on the software. Well, who's everyone? You know? You got a new vendor today? A new customer tomorrow, a new employee. People come on and off the team. The other problem is the data stored in files, thousands of files. This isn't like a spreadsheet or word processor where there's one file to pass around these air thousands of files to make one, even a simple product. People were tearing their hair out. John, what do we do? I've got copies everywhere. I don't know where the latest version is. We tried like, you know, locking people out so that only one person can change it at the time that works against speed. It works against innovation. We saw what was happening with Cloud Web and mobile. So what's happened in the years since is every one of the forces that product developers experience the need for speed, the need for innovation, the need to be more efficient with their people in their capital. Resource is every one of those trends have been amplified since we started on shape by a lot of forces in the world. And covert is amplified all those the need for agility and remote work cove it is amplified all that the same time, The acceptance of cloud. You know, a few years ago, people were like cloud, you know, how is that gonna work now They're saying to me, you know, increasingly, how would you ever even have done this without the cloud? How do you make solid works Work without the cloud? How would that even happen? You know, And once people understand what on shapes about >>and we're the >>Onley full SAS solution software as a service, full SAS solution in our industry. So what's happened in those years? Same problems we saw earlier, but turn up the gain, their bigger problems. And with cloud, we've seen skepticism of years ago turn into acceptance. And now even embracement in the cova driven new normal. >>Yeah. So a lot of friction in the previous environments cloud obviously a huge factor on, I guess. I guess Dana John could see it coming, you know, in the early days of solid works with Salesforce, which is kind of the first major independent SAS player. Well, I guess that was late nineties. So it was post solid works, but pre in shape and their work day was, you know, pre on shape in the mid two thousands. And and but But, you know, the bet was on the SAS model was right for Crick had and and product development, you know, which Maybe the time wasn't a no brainer. Or maybe it was I don't know, but Dana is there. Is there anything that you would invest in today that's not Cloud based? >>Um, that's a great question. I mean, I think we still see things all the time in the manufacturing world that are not cloud based. I think you know, the closer you get to the shop floor in the production environment. Um, e think John and the PTC folks would agree with this, too, but that it's, you know, there's reliability requirements. There's performance requirements. There's still this attitude of, you know, don't touch the printing press. So the cloud is still a little bit scary sometimes. And I think hybrid cloud is a real thing for those or on premise. Solutions, in some cases is still a real thing. What, what were more focused on. And, um, despite whether it's on premise or hybrid or or SAS and Cloud is a frictionless go to market model, um, in the companies we invest in so sass and cloud, or really make that easy to adopt for new users, you know, you sign up, start using a product, um, but whether it's hosted in the cloud, whether it's as you can still distribute buying power. And, um, I would I'm just encouraging customers in the customer world and the more industrial environment to entrust some of their lower level engineers with more budget discretionary spending so they can try more products and unlock innovation. >>Right? The unit economics are so compelling. So let's bring it, you know, toe today's you know, situation. John, you decided to exit about a year ago. You know? What did you see in PTC? Other than the obvious money? What was the strategic fit? >>Yeah, Well, David, I wanna be clear. I didn't exit anything. Really? You >>know, I love you and I don't like that term exit. I >>mean, Dana had exit is a shareholder on and so it's not It's not exit for me. It's just a step in the journey. Um, what we saw in PTC was a partner. First of all, that shared our vision from the top down at PTC. Jim Hempleman, the CEO. He had a great vision for for the impact that SAS can make based on cloud technology. And really is Dana of highlighted so much. It's not just the technology is how you go to market and the whole business being run and how you support and make the customers successful. So Jim shared a vision for the potential. And really, really, um said Hey, come join us and we can do this bigger, Better, faster. We expanded the vision really to include this Atlas platform for hosting other SAS applications. That P D. C. I mean, David Day arrived at PTC. I met the head of the academic program. He came over to me and I said, You know, and and how many people on your team? I thought he'd say 5 40 people on the PTC academic team. It was amazing to me because, you know, we were we were just near about 100 people were required are total company. We didn't even have a dedicated academic team and we had ah, lot of students signing up, you know, thousands and thousands. Well, now we have hundreds of thousands of students were approaching a million users, and that shows you the power of this team that PTC had combined with our product and technology whom you get a big success for us and for the teachers and students to the world. We're giving them great tools. So so many good things were also putting some PTC technology from other parts of PTC back into on shape. One area, a little spoiler, little sneak peek. Working on taking generative design. Dana knows all about generative design. We couldn't acquire that technology were start up, you know, just to too much to do. But PTC owns one of the best in the business. This frustrated technology we're working on putting that into on shaping our customers. Um, will be happy to see it, hopefully in the coming year sometime. >>It's great to see that two way exchange. Now, you both know very well when you start a company, of course, a very exciting time. You know, a lot of baggage, you know, our customers pulling you in a lot of different directions and asking you for specials. You have this kind of clean slate, so to speak in it. I would think in many ways, John, despite you know, your install base, you have a bit of that dynamic occurring today especially, you know, driven by the forced march to digital transformation that cove it caused. So when you sit down with the team PTC and talk strategy, you now have more global resource is you got cohorts selling opportunities. What's the conversation like in terms of where you want to take the division? >>Well, Dave, you actually you sounds like we should have you coming in and talking about strategy because you've got the strategy down. I mean, we're doing everything said global expansion were able to reach across selling. We've got some excellent PTC customers that we can reach reach now and they're finding uses for on shape. I think the plan is to, you know, just go, go, go and grow, grow, grow where we're looking for this year, priorities are expand the product. I mentioned the breath of the product with new things PTC did recently. Another technology that they acquired for on shape. We did an acquisition. It was it was small, wasn't widely announced. It, um, in an area related to interfacing with electrical cad systems. So? So we're doing We're expanding the breath of on shape. We're going Maura. Depth in the areas were already in. We have enormous opportunity. Add more features and functions that's in the product. Go to market. You mentioned it global global presence. That's something we were a little light on a year ago. Now we have a team. Dana may not even know what we have a non shape, dedicated team in Barcelona, based in Barcelona but throughout Europe were doing multiple languages. Um, the academic program just introduced a new product into that space. That's that's even fueling more success and growth there, Um, and of course, continuing to to invest in customer success. And this Atlas platform story I keep mentioning, we're going to soon have We're gonna soon have four other major PTC brands shipping products on our Atlas Saas platform. And so we're really excited about that. That's good for the other PTC products. It's also good for on shape because now there's there's. There's other interesting products that are on shape customers can use take advantage of very easily using, say, a common log in conventions about user experience there used to invest of all their SAS based, so they that makes it easier to begin with. So that's some of the exciting things going on. I think you'll see P. D. C. Um expanding our lead in saas based applications for this sector for our target sectors, not just in in cat and data management. But another area, PTC's Big and his augmented reality with of euphoria, product line leader and industrial uses of a R. That's a whole other story we should do. A whole nother show augmented reality. But these products are amazing. You can You can help factory workers people on, uh, people who are left out of the digital transformation. Sometimes we're standing from machine >>all day. >>They can't be sitting like we are doing Zoom. They could wear a R headset in our tools. Let them create great content. This is an area Dana is invested in in other companies, but what I wanted to note is the new releases of our authoring software. For this, our content getting released this month, used through the Atlas platform, the SAS components of on shape for things like revision management and collaboration on duh workflow activity. All that those are tools that we're able to share leverage. We get a lot of synergy. It's just really good. It's really fun to We'll have a good time, >>that's awesome. And then we're gonna be talking to John MacLean later about Atlas and do a little deeper dive on that. And, Dana, what is your involvement today with with on shape? But you're looking for you know, which of their customers air actually adopting, and they're gonna disrupt their industries. You get good pipeline from that. How do you collaborate today? >>That sounds like a great idea. Um, a Z John will tell you I'm constantly just ask him for advice and impressions of other entrepreneurs and picking his brain on ideas. No formal relationship clearly, but continue to count John and and John and other people in on shaping in the circle of experts that I rely on for their opinions. >>All right, so we have some questions from the crowd here. Uh, one of the questions is for the dream team. You know, John and Dana. What's your next next collective venture? I don't think we're there yet, are we? No. I >>just say, as Dana said, we love talking to her about. You know, Dana, you just returned the compliment. We would try and give you advice and the deals you're looking at, and I'm sort of casually mentoring at least one of your portfolio entrepreneurs, and that's been a lot of fun for May on hopefully a value to them. But also Dana, We uran important pipeline to us in the world of some new things that are happening that we wouldn't see if you know you've shown us some things that you've said. What do you think of this business? And for us, it's like, Wow, it's cool to see that's going on And that's what's supposed to work in an ecosystem like this. So we we deeply value the ongoing relationship. And no, we're not starting something new. I got a lot of work left to do with what I'm doing and really happy. But we can We can collaborate in this way on other ventures. >>I like this question to somebody asking with the cloud options like on shape, Wilmore students have stem opportunities s Oh, that's a great question. Are you because of sass and cloud? Are you able to reach? You know, more students? Much more cost effectively. >>Yeah, Dave, I'm so glad that that that I was asked about this because Yes, and it's extremely gratifying us. Yes, we are because of cloud, because on shape is the only full cloud full SAS system. Our industry were able to reach stem education brings able to be part of bringing step education to students who couldn't get it otherwise. And one of most gratifying gratifying things to me is the emails were getting from teachers, um, that that really, um, on the phone calls that were they really pour their heart out and say We're able to get to students in areas that have very limited compute resource is that don't have an I T staff where they don't know what computer that the students can have at home, and they probably don't even have a computer. We're talking about being able to teach them on a phone to have an android phone a low end android phone. You could do three D modeling on there with on shape. Now you can't do it any other system, but with on shape, you could do it. And so the teacher can say to the students, They have to have Internet access, and I know there's a huge community that doesn't even have Internet access, and we're not able, unfortunately to help that. But if you have Internet and you have even an android phone, we can enable the educator to teach them. And so we have case after case of saving a stem program or expanding it into the students that need it most is the ones we're helping here. So really excited about that. And we're also able to let in addition to the run on run on whatever computing devices they have, we also offer them the tools they need for remote teaching with a much richer experience. You know, could you teach solid works remotely? Well, maybe if the student ran it had a windows workstation, you know, big, big, high and workstation. Maybe it could, but it would be like the difference between collaborating with on shape and collaborate with solid works. Like the difference between a zoom video call and talking on the landline phone. You know, it's a much richer experience, and that's what you need in stem teaching. Stem is hard. So, yeah, we're super super excited about bringing stem to more students because of clouds. >>Yeah, we're talking about innovation for good, and then the discussion, John, you just had it. Really? There could be a whole another vector here. We could discuss on diversity, and I wanna end with just pointing out So, Dana, your new firm. It's a woman led firm, too. Two women leaders, you know, going forward. So that's awesome to see, so really? Yeah, thumbs up on that. Congratulations on getting that off the ground. Yeah. Thank you. Okay. So thank you guys. And I want to understand why you feel it's important to be early. so I like to work with founders and teams when they're, you know, And what are you seeing today? you try to eliminate the risk sa's much as you can, but I always say, I don't mind taking a risk You like to bet on I want to thank you again for all that you did it every step of the way from where we started. You know, a few years ago, people were like cloud, you know, in the cova driven new normal. And and but But, you know, the bet was on the SAS model was right for Crick had and I think you know, the closer you get to the shop floor in the production environment. So let's bring it, you know, toe today's you know, You know, I love you and I don't like that term exit. It's not just the technology is how you go to market and the whole business being run and how you support You know, a lot of baggage, you know, our customers pulling you in a lot of different directions you know, just go, go, go and grow, grow, grow where we're looking for this year, the SAS components of on shape for things like revision management How do you collaborate today? Um, a Z John will tell you I'm constantly one of the questions is for the dream team. the world of some new things that are happening that we wouldn't see if you know you've shown us some things that you've said. He's the CMO of IBM IBM Storage division. He's joined by James Amy's, who's the head of networks at advance. The service provider Guys, Welcome to the Cube. Good to see again. >> Great. Thanks for having us loved being on the cute. >> So we love having you So, James, let's start with you. Tell us a little bit about advanced to want to dig into some of the networking trends. We're hearing a lot about it here. It's just go live. >> Yeah, I think so. Advanced are a manage service provider software software company based in the UK, one of the largest software companies in the UK, providing interim solutions for lots of different Marchal market verticals, including healthcare, local government, regional government, national infrastructure projects we've got involved with as well as charity sector legal sector. A lot of education work we do is real diverse portfolio of products we offer on with the manage services piece. We also offer complete outsourcing. So this is desktop support. Telephony support, printer support all the >> way back into integration with public cloud platforms and private cloud platforms, the majority of >> which is our in. >> So so Eric advanced are both a customer and a partner, right? Right, right. And so you love you. Love versus Stack. These guys are presumed versus stack customers. Well >> stacked customer in the Versace tack, as you know, Integrate. Cisco, UCS, Cisco Networking Infrastructure, IBM Storage of all types entry products up into the fastest all flash raise with our software spectrum virtualized spectrum, Accelerate Family and James's company is using versus tax is part of their infrastructure, which they then offer, as you know, to a service toe and uses. James just described. >> So let's talk about some of the big trends that you guys are seeing and how you're both responding to customers and you're responding to your customer. So we're seeing two hearing today. Lot about multi cloud. We've been hearing that for a while the network is flattening your network expert love to get your your thoughts on that. Security, obviously, is a huge topic. End end management, another big topic, something that IBM is focused on. So so James, what 1 of the big mega trends that you're seeing that a driving your business decisions and your customer's activity? One >> of the big changes we're seeing is a change from large scare enterprise scale deployments off a particular type of technology on customers are now choosing because they're informed the best fit for a particular application or particular service on that may be coming to a service provider like ourselves to offer our services products to them. Uh, or they're looking for us to run in infrastructure service for them or integrate with a public cloud offering. So the competition of the public cloud for service providers is key on DH. I think people were looking around a few years ago thinking, How do we compete to this well, with partnerships that we have in our Francisco? It gives us a very compelling competitive offering. But we can turn around and say, Well, we can give you a like for like, but we can give you a slightly better service because we could give you guaranteed availability. We give you guaranteed price point on, and this is all backed with key vendor certified designs. So we're not talking about going out on developing a solution that takes maybe eighteen months to take to market. This is understanding a requirement for a quick, you know, Q and A with a customer a line that, too a reference architecture that we can literally just pick up off the shelf, deploy into our data centers using the standard building rocks that we use across the business. So Nexus nine K seven k's or our standard bread and butter inside the data center environment. As Eric pointed out, Cisco UCS is our our key Intel computer platform that we used on DH. The store wise IBM product has been a real true success story for us. So we started off being a a mixed then the house where we would align storage requirement paste with what we could find in the market. That was, that was a good fit. But the store was products is basically just allowed us to standardize on the speed of deployment is one of the key things. So we started out with a very lengthy lead time tio service ready, which is when we start charging for revenue on if we want a ninety day build. Well, we've got a lot of special service time, A lot of engineering time getting that ready Teo, Teo and take to the customer and then we turn it on. We can start seeing revenue from that platform with versus Stack. This enabled us to accelerate how quickly we can turn that on. And we've seen that drop, too. They're literally days through standardisation elements of automation as well. Many of our environments are bespoke because we have such a wide arrange off different types of customers with different needs, but it allows us to take those standing building blocks, align them to their needs and deliver that service. >> James James, we found the peas are often in the middle of those discussions that customers are having on multi clouds. You talked a lot about the services you build. Are they also coming to you? If if you tie into the public Cloud services or yes, maybe you can help explain a little bit on how that worked Five years ago, it was the public loud there are going to kill them and service providers. And what we see is customers can't sort out half of what's going on. They've got to be able to turn two partners like you to be able to figure this out. >> Yeah, that's a fantastic question. I think three years ago we'd be talking to our customers and they were I am going to this public cloud or I am going to build this infrastructure. Where is now? They're They're making Mohr informed select decisions based on the drive to the hosted office and voice platforms offered by Microsoft. There's a big driving. Many of our customers are going in that direction, but it's how we integrate that with legacy applications. Some of the solutions that some of our customers use have have have had millions of pounds of investment into them, and that's not something I can just turn off the water away from overnight. So it is how we're integrating that. We're doing that at the network level, so it's how we're appearing with different service providers, bringing that in integrating that, I'm offering it to them as a solution. What we try tio, we try to try position ourselves is really it's the same experience, regardless of where we're placing it. Consumption. Workload doesn't know whether it's inside our data centers, whether we're talking one of the public cloud platforms or even on premise. So we have quite a few customers that still have significant presence on premises because that's right for their business, depending on on what they're doing, especially some of the research scientists. >> So you've got to deliver flexibility in your architecture, and you talk a lot about software to find you guys made a big move to software to find, you know, a couple years ago, actually, maybe discuss how that fits in to how you're servicing advanced another client? >> Sure. So you know, IBM Storage has embraced multi Cloud for several years. So our solutions. While, of course, they work with IBM, Cloud and IBM cloud private work with Amazon. They work with azure Google Cloud and in fact, some are products. For example, the versus stack not only is advanced using it, but we've got pry forty or fifty public, small, medium sized cloud providers that our public references for the vs Tag and Spectrum Protect you Know which is our backup product Number one in the Enterprise. Back up space Expect from detectives Got at least three hundred cloud providers. Medium, small and big. Who offered the engine underneath for their backup is a service is spectrum protect, So we make sure that weather PR transparent cloud tearing our cyber resiliency technology. What we doing? Backup archive object storage works with essentially all cloud providers. That way, someone like James A. CSP MSP can leverage our products. And we, like I said, we have tons of public records around versus Stack for that, but so can an enterprise. And in fact, I saw survey recently that it was done in Europe and in North America that when you look at a roughly two billion US size revenue and up the average company of that sizing up, we use five different public cloud riders at one time. Where that it be due to legal reasons whether that be procurement. You know, the Web is really the Internet. And, yeah, Cloud is really just It's been around for twenty some years. So in bigger accounts, guess what is now involved Procurement Well, we love that you did that deal with IBM club, but you are going to get a competitive quote now from Amazon and Microsoft, right? So that's driven it legal's driven it. Certain countries, right? The data needs to stay in that country, even if your cloud if eyeing it, it's so to speak. So if the clap water doesn't have a data center there, guess what? Another geographer used different. And then you, of course, still have some large entities that still allow regional buying pattern so they'll have three or four different cloud providers that air quote certified by corporate. And then you could use whichever one you want, so we make sure that we could take advantage of that. Wade and IBM. We ride the wave, We don't fight the way. >> So you've got in that situation. You these multi cloud you got different AP eyes, You get different frameworks potty, you abstract all that complexity you got, Francisco coming at it from a networking standpoint, I b m. Now with Red Hat is good. Be a big player in that that world. VM where What do you guys do? James, in terms of of simplifying all that multi cloud complexity >> for people. I think some of it is actually the mystifying on its engaging with our partners to understand what the proposition is on, how we can develop that on a line, that to mind your own business, but more importantly, to the needs of our customers. We've got some really, really talented technicians worked within within advance, and we've got a number of different forums that allow them to feed back their ideas. But we've got the alignments between those partners and and some of those communities, so that we can have an open discussion on drive. Some of that thinking forward about ultimately see engaging with customers. So the customers feedback is key on how we shape and deliver no need service to them, but also to the service to other customers. We have a number of customers that are very similar, but they may work in different spaces, some somewhere even competitive. So we have to tread that line very safe, very carefully and safely. But it is. It's a good one to one relationship between the client service managers, technical technicians. We have inside business having that to complete three sixty communication is key, but that's that's that's really the bottom takes. Its creation >> came like youto dig into security for us a little bit. You know, I think we surpassed a couple of years ago. I'm not going to go to the cloud to it because it's not secure to Oh, I understand it's time for me to least reevaluate meant security and, most likely, you know, manage service fighters. Public clouds are probably more secure than what I had in my data center, but if I've got multiple environment, there's a lot of complexity there. So how do you traverse that? Make sure that you've got a comprehensive security practice, not just all these point solutions for security all over the place. >> Ah, so that's that comes onto visibility. So its visibility understanding where all the control points are within a given infrastructure on how the landscape looks. So we were working quite closely with a number actually of key Cisco and IBM partners, as well as IBM and Cisco themselves directly tohave a comprehensive offering that allows us to position to our customers. You used to once upon a time you had one game, right? So we need it is from good security on your Internet. Facing viable For now, you might have a ten. Twenty, thirty of those. We need tohave consistent policies across those. We need to understand how they're performing, but also potentially, if there's any attempt attack vector on one of them. How that how someone is trying to looking to compromise that so centralized intelligence on That's where we start to look at my eye operations to gather all that information. The long gone are the days where you have twenty people sharing a room just reading streams. Those twenty people now need thio. See reams and reams of information instantly. Something needs to be called up to them. They could make a decision quickly on Active planet on DH. That's really where we we're positioning ourselves in the market to differentiate. I'm working with key part, Mr >> Never talk about your announcement cadence. Good idea as a big show. Think coming up in a couple weeks cubes gonna be there. Of course. What can we expect from from you guys? >> So we're actually gonna announce on the fifth before things way, want to drive end users and our business partners to storage campus, which is one of the largest campuses at IBM, think we'll have over fifteen pedestals of demo and actually multiple demos because we have such a broad portfolio, from the all flash arrays to our versus stack offering to a whole set of modern data protection management control for storage, which manages in control storage, that's not ours, right? Our competitors storage as well, and, of course, our software to find storage. So we're going to do a big announcement. The focus of that will be around our storage solutions. These air solutions blueprints reference architectures is Jane, you mentioned that use our software and our storage systems that allow reseller or end user to configure systems easily. Think of it as the ultimate wrestling recipe for that German chocolate cake. But it's the perfect recipe. It's tried. It's true, it's tested. It's been on the Food Channel twenty seven times and everybody loves it. That's what we do with our our solutions. Blueprints. We'll have some announcements around modern data protection, and obviously a big focus of IBM. Storage is been in the space. So both storage as an Aye aye platform for aye aye, applications are workloads but also the incorporation of technology into our own storage systems and software. So be having announcements around that on February fifth going into think, which will then be the week after in San Francisco. >> Great. So I'm here and trusted data protection plays into that. Aye, aye. Intelligence machine intelligence. And I'm also hearing header of Geneti multiple platforms. Whether it's your storage, you said our competitors now does that also include sort of the clouds? Fear we're not announcing anything. But you guys have you know, you've seen your pictures. That's azure itt's a w a s. I mean, that continues >> so absolutely so. Whether it be what we do from backup in archive, right, let's take the easy one. So we support not only the protocol of IBM clad object storage which we acquired and allows you to have object storage either on premise or in a cloud in stance e ation. But we also support the s three protocol. So, for example, our spectrum scale software giant scale out. In fact, the two fastest supercomputers world you spectrum scale over four hundred fifty petabytes running on spectrum scale, and they continue their to an object store that supports us three. Or it can tear toe IBM clad object stories through that IBM clad object storage customer. That's great for using the S three protocol. You, Khun, Tear to that as well. That's just one example. Same thing we do for cyber resiliency. So from a cyber resents me perspective, we could do things with any cloud vendor oven air cat air gap, right? And so you could do that, eh? With tape. But you could also do that with the clouds. So if your cloud is your backup archive replication repository, then you can always roll back to a known good copy. You don't have to pay the ransom writer. When you clean up the malware, you can roll back to a known good copy, and we provide that across all of the platforms in a number of ways. Our protect family, our new products, a safeguard copy for the main friend that we announced October. So all that allows us to be multi cloud resiliency as well as how do we connect a multi cloud backup archive automated tearing all kinds of clouds, whether the IBM cloud and, of course, I'm a shareholder. So I love that, but at the same time were realistic. Lots of people use Amazon Google Azar. And like I said, there's thousands of mid two small cloud providers all over the world, and we support them, too. We engage with everyone. >> What about SAS? You know, that's one of the questions we've been trying to squint through and understand is because when you talk about five cloud providers is obviously infrastructures of service. And then there's their service providers like like Advanced. And then there's like a gazillion SAS Companies >> write a lot of data >> in there and a lot of data in there. How should we think about, you know, protecting that data? Securing that data is that sort of up to the SAS vendor, and thou shalt not touch. Or should that be part of the scope of AH, storage company? Well, so what we do >> is we engage with the SAS vendor, so we have a number of different sass coming is, in fact, one of them was on the Cube two years ago with us. They were startup in the cyber security space and all of its delivered over SAS. So what they do is in that case, the use our flash system product line, they get the performance they need to deliver south. They want no bottlenecks because obviously you have to go over the network when you're doing SAS Andi. Also, what they do is data encryption at rest. So when the data is brought in because we have on our flash arrays capability and most of our product line especially the flash systems to have no performance hit on encrypt their decrypt because its hardware embedded, they're able to have the data at rest encrypted for all their customers. That gives them a level of security when it's at rest on their site. At the same time, we've given the right performance. They need tohave soft reserve, so we engage with all we pry have three hundred, four hundred different SAS companies who are the actual software vendor and their deployment model. This software's interest, by the way, we do that as well as I mentioned, over three hundred cloud providers today have a backup is a service and the engine ease their spectrum. Protect or spectrum protect. Plus, but they may call it something else. In fact, we just had a public reference out from Silver String, which is out in the UK, and all they do is cyber resiliency. Backup in archive. That's their service. They have their own product, but then spectrum Protect and Spectrum Check plus is the engine underneath their Prada. So that's an example. In this case, the backup is a service, which, I would argue is not infrastructure, but more of an application. But then true what you call real application providers like cyber security vendors, we have a vendor who in fact, does something for all of the universities and colleges. United States. They have about eight thousand of them, including the junior colleges, and they run all their bookstores. So when you place an order, all their air NPR, everything they do is from this SAS vendor that's based in there in the Northeast. And they've got, like I said, about a thousand colleges and universities in the U. S. And Canada, and they offer this if you will bookstore as a sass service and the students use it. University uses it. And, of course, the bookstores are designed to, you know, make a little money for the university, and they all use that so that's another example. And they use are flash systems as well. And then they back up that data internally with spectrum protectors. They obviously it's the financial data as well as the inventory of all of these book stores all over the United States at the collegiate >> level right now. James Way gotta wrap, but just sort of give you the final word. UK specialist, right? So Brexit really doesn't affect you. Is that a fair statement? >> Uh, we'll do? Yes. >> How so? >> I think it's too early to tell. No one really knows. I think that's all the debates are about. AJ's trying to understand that on DH for us. We're just watching and observing. >> Staying focused on your customers, obviously. So no predictions as to what's going to happen. I was not from a weeks ago. I got hurt both sides. You know, it's definitely gonna happen, All right, Not happen, but okay, again give you the last word. You know? What's your focus? Over the next twelve eighteen months? >> Eso all our focus is really about visibility, So they they they've touched on that. We're talking about security for customers. Understanding whether data is whether exposure point saw. That's our keep. Keep focusing on DH versus stack on dh thie IBM store wise product underpin all of those offerings that we have on. So Advanced are a managed service provider software company based in the UK, one of the largest software companies in the UK, providing interim solutions for lots of different market verticals, including healthcare, local government, regional government, national infrastructure projects we get involved with. As well as charity sector, legal sector. A lot of education work we do, so it's real diverse portfolio of products we offer. I'm with the managed services piece. We also offer complete IT outsourcing. So this is desktop support, telephony support, printer support all the way back into integration with public cloud platforms and private cloud platforms, the majority of which is our own >> So so Eric advanced are both a customer and a partner, right? Right, right. And so you love versus stack, these guys I presume a versus stack customers as well. >> Versus stack and customer in the Versace tack, as you know, integrates Cisco, UCS, Cisco Networking Infrastructure, IBM storage of all types entry products up into the fastest all flash raise with our software spectrum, virtualized spectrum, Accelerate Family and James's company is using versus tax is part of their infrastructure, which they then offer, as you know, to a service toe and uses. James just described. >> So let's talk about some of the big trends that you guys are seeing and how you're both responding to customers and you're responding to your customer. So we're seeing two hearing today. Lot about multi cloud. We've been hearing that for a while the network is flattening your network expert love to get your your thoughts on that. Security, obviously, is a huge topic. End end management, another big topic, something that IBM is focused on. So so James, what 1 of the big mega trends that you're seeing that a driving your business decisions and your customer's activity? One >> of the big changes we're seeing is a change from large scare enterprise scale deployments off a particular type of technology on customers are now choosing because they're informed the best fit for a particular application or particular service on that may be coming to a service provider like ourselves to offer our services products to them. Uh, or they're looking for us to roam in infrastructure service for them or integrate with a public cloud offering. So the competition of the public cloud for service providers is key. Andi, I think people were looking around a few years ago thinking, How do we compete to this well, with partnerships that we have an IBM and Cisco gives us a very compelling competitive offering, but we can turn around and say, Well, we could give you a like for like, but we can give you slightly better service because we could give you guaranteed little give you guaranteed price point on. And this is all backed with key vendor certified designs. So we're not talking about going out on developing a solution that takes maybe eighteen months to take to market. This is understanding a requirement for a quick, you know, Q and A with a customer. Our line that, too, a reference architecture that we can literally just pick up off the shelf, deploy into our data centers using the standard building brought that we use across the business so Nexus nine k seven k's or our standard bread and butter inside the data center environment. As Eric pointed out, Cisco UCS is our our key Intel computer platform that we used on DH. The store wise IBM product has been a real true success story for us. So we started off being a a mixed then the house where we would align storage requirement based with what we could find in the market. That was, that was a good fit for the store. Waste products is basically just allowed us to standardize on the speed of deployment is one of the key things. So we started out with a very lengthy lead time tio service ready, which is when we start charging for revenue on If we want a ninety day build, Well, we've got a lot of special service time, A lot of engineering time getting that ready Teo, Teo and take to the customer and then we turn it on. We can start seeing revenue from that platform with versus Stack. This enabled us to accelerate how quickly we can turn that on. And we've seen that drop, too. They're literally days through standardisation elements of automation as well. Many of our environments are bespoke because we have such a wide arrange off different types of customers with different needs, but it allows us to take those standing building blocks, align them to their needs and deliver that service. >> James James, we found the peas are often in the middle of those discussions that customers are having on multi clouds. You talked a lot about the services you build. Are they also coming to you? If if you tie into the public Cloud services or yes, maybe you can help expand a little bit on how that worked. Five years ago, it was the public loves are all going to kill the man and service providers, and what we see is customers can sort out half of what's going on. They've got to be able to turn two partners like you to be able to figure this out. >> Yeah, that's a fantastic question. I think three years ago we'd be talking to our customers and they were I am going to this public cloud or I am going to build this infrastructure. Whereas now they're making more informed select decisions based on what's right. The drive to the hosted office and voice platforms offered by Microsoft.  There's a big drive and many of our ITO customers are going in that direction, but it's how we integrate that with their legacy applications. Some of the ERP solutions that some of our customers use have had millions of pounds of investment into them, and that's not something they can just turn off and walk away from over night. So it's how we're integrating that. We're doing that at the network level, so it's how we're pairing with different service providers, bringing that in integrating that I'm offering it to them as a solution on what we try to, we try to try and position ourselves is really it's the same experience. Regardless of where we're placing IT consumptional workload, it doesn't matter whether it's inside our data centers, whether we're talking one of the public cloud platforms or even on premise. So we have quite a few customers that still have significant presence on premise, because that's right for their business, depending on what they're doing, especially some of the research scientists. >> So you've got to deliver flexibility in your architecture, and you talk a lot about software to find you guys made it big. You move to software to find, you know, a couple years ago, actually, maybe discuss how that fits in to how you're servicing advanced another client? >> Sure. So you know, IBM Storage has embraced multi cloud for several years. No, our solutions. While, of course, they work with IBM, Cloud and IBM cloud private work with Amazon. They work with Azure Google Cloud and in fact, some are products. For example, the versus Stack not only is advanced using it, but we've got pry forty or fifty public, small, medium sized cloud providers that our public references for the versus stack and spectrum protect Now, which is our backup product number one in the Enterprise. Back up space expect from detectives Got at least three hundred cloud providers. Medium, small and big. Who offered the engine underneath for their backup is a service is spectrum protect, so we make sure that weather PR transparent cloud tearing our cyber resiliency technology. What we doing? Backup archive object storage works with essentially all cloud providers. That way, someone like James A. CSP MSP can leverage our products. And we, like I said, we have tons of public records around versus Stack for that, but so can an enterprise. And in fact, I saw survey recently, and it was done in Europe and in North America that when you look at a roughly two billion US size revenue and up the average company of that sizing up, we'll use five different public cloud riders at one time. Where that it be due to legal reasons whether that be procurement. You know, the Web is really the Internet, and go Cloud is really just It's been around for twenty some years. So in bigger accounts, guess what is now involved procurement. Well, we love that you did that deal with IBM club, but you are going to get a competitive quote now from Amazon and Microsoft, right? So that's driven it legal's driven it. Certain countries, right? The data needs to stay in that country, even if your cloud if eyeing it, it's so to speak. So the clap water doesn't have a data center there. Guess what another geographer used different. And then you, of course, still have some large entities that still allow regional buying pattern so they'll have three or four different cloud providers that air quote certified by corporate. And then you could use whichever one you want, So we make sure that we could take advantage of that. Wade and IBM We ride the wave. We don't fight the way. >> So you've got in that situation. You these multi cloud you got different AP eyes, you get different frameworks. How d'you abstract all that complexity you got, Francisco coming at it From a networking standpoint, I b m. Now with Red Hat is good. Be a big player in that that world. VM where What do you guys do? James, in terms of of simplifying all that multi cloud complexity >> for people. I think some of it is actually demystifying on DH. It's engaging with our partners to understand what the proposition is on, how we can develop that on a line that to learn their own business but more importantly, to the needs of our customers. We've got some really, really talented technicians worked within within advance, and we've got a number of different forums that allow them to feed back their ideas. We've got thie alignment between those partners on DH, some of those communities, so that we can have an open discussion and drive. Some of that thinking forward about ultimately see engaging with customers so the customers feedback is key on how we shape and deliver only in service to them, but also to the service to other customers. We have a number of customers that are very similar, but they may work in different spaces, some somewhere even competitive. So we have to tread that line very safe, very carefully and safely. But it is. It's a good one to one relationship between the client service managers technical so that the technicians we have inside business having that complete three sixty. Communication is key. That's that's that's really the bottom takes its creation >> came like youto dig into security for us a little bit. You know, I think we surpassed a couple of years ago. I'm not going to go to the cloud to it because it's not secure to Oh, I understand it's time for me to least reevaluate my security and most likely, no manage service fighters. Public clouds are probably more secure than what I had in my data center, but if I've got multiple environment, there's a lot of complexity there. So how do you traverse that? Make sure that you've got a comprehensive security practice, not just all these point solutions for security all over the place. >> Yeah, so that's that comes onto visibility. So its visibility understanding where all the control points are within a given infrastructure on how the landscape looks. So we were working quite closely with a number actually Key Cisco and IBM partners, as well as IBM and Cisco themselves directly to have a comprehensive offering that allows us to position to our customers. You used to once upon a time you had one guy, right? So we need It is from good security on your Internet. Facing viable For now, you may have a ten. Twenty, thirty of those. We need tohave consistent policies across those. We need to understand how they're performing, but also potentially, if there's any attack, attack vector on one of them. How that how someone is trying to looking to compromise that so centralized intelligence on That's where we start to look at my eye operations to gather all that information. The long gone are the days where you have twenty people sharing a room just reading streams. Those twenty people now need thio. See reams and reams of information instantly. Something needs to be called up to them. They could make a decision quickly on Active planet on DH. That's really where we were. We're We're positioning ourselves in the market to differentiate. I'm working with key partners. We have >> to do that. >> Eric, talk about your announcement cadence. That idea has a big show. Think coming up in a couple weeks. Cubes going be here? Of course. What can we expect from from you guys? >> So we're actually gonna announce on the fifth before things we want to drive end users and our business partners to storage Campus, which is one of the largest campuses at IBM, think we'll have over fifteen pedestals of demo and actually multiple demos because we have such a broad portfolio, from the all flash arrays to our versus stack offering to a whole set of modern data protection management control for storage, which manages in control storage, that's not ours, right? Our competitors storage as well. And, of course, our software to find story. So we're going to do a big announcement. The focus of that will be around our storage solutions. These air solutions blueprints reference architectures is Jane, you mentioned that use our software and our storage systems that allow reseller or end user to configure systems easily. Think of it as the ultimate wrestling recipe for that German chocolate cake. But it's the perfect recipe. It's tried. It's true, it's tested. It's been on the Food Channel twenty seven times and everybody loves it. That's what we do with our our solutions. Blueprints. We'll have some announcements around modern data protection, and obviously a big focus of IBM. Storage is been in the space. So both storage as an Aye aye platform for Aye, aye. Applications are workloads, but also the incorporation of technology into our own storage systems and software. So be having announcements around that on February fifth going into think, which will then be the week after in San Francisco. >> Great. So I'm here and trusted data protection plays into that. Aye, aye. Intelligence Machine Intelligence. And I'm also hearing header of Geneti multiple platforms. Whether it's your storage, you said our competitors now does that also include sort of the clouds Fear without announcing anything. But you guys have you know, you've seen your pictures. That's azure itt's a W a s. I mean, that continues >> so absolutely so. Whether it be what we do from backup in archive, right, let's take the easy one. So we support not only the protocol of IBM clad object storage which we acquired and allows you to have object storage either on premise or in a cloud in stance E ation. Well, we also support the s three protocol. So, for example, our spectrum scale software giant scale out. In fact, the two fastest supercomputers world use spectrum scale over four hundred fifty petabytes running on spectrum scale, and they continue ear to an object store that supports US three. Or it can tear toe IBM clad object stories through that IBM clad object storage customer. That's great using the S three protocol. You, Khun, Tear to that as well. So that's just one example. Same thing we do for cyber resiliency. So from a cyber resents me perspective, we could do things with any cloud vendor oven air cat air gap, right? And so you could do that, eh? With tape. But you could also do that with the clouds. So if your cloud is your backup archive replication repository, then you can always roll back to a known good copy. You don't have to pay the ransom writer. When you clean up the malware, you can roll back to a known good copy, and we provide that across all of the platforms in a number of ways. Our Protect family, our new products say safeguard copy for the main friend that we announced October. So all that allows us to be multi cloud resiliency as well as how do we connect a multi cloud backup archive automated tearing all kinds of clouds, whether the IBM cloud and of course, I'm a shareholder, so I love that. But at the same time, we're realistic. Lots of people use Amazon Google Azar. And like I said, there's thousands of mid two small cloud providers all over the world, and we support them, too. We engage with everyone. >> What about SAS? You know, that's one of the questions we've been trying to squint through and understand is because when you talk about five cloud providers is obviously infrastructures of service. And then there's their service providers like like Advanced. And then there's like a Brazilian SAS companies >> write a lot of data in >> there and a lot of data in there. How should we think about, you know, protecting that data? Securing that data is that sort of up to the SAS vendor, and thou shalt not touch. Or should that be part of the scope of AH, storage company? Well, so what we do >> is we engage with the SAS vendor, so we have a number of different sass coming is, in fact, one of them was on the Cube two years ago with us. They were startup in the cyber security space and all of its delivered over SAS So what they do is, in that case, the use our flash system Roddick line. They get the performance they need to deliver South. They want no bottlenecks because obviously you have to go over the network when you're doing SAS on DH, then also, what they do is data encryption at rest. So when the data is brought in because we have on our flash arrays capability and most of our product line especially the flash systems to have no performance hit on encrypt their decrypt because its hardware embedded, they're able to have the data at rest encrypted for all their customers. That gives them a level of security when it's at rest on their site. At the same time, we've given the right performance. They need tohave soft reserve, so we engage with all we pry have three hundred, four hundred different SAS companies who are the actual software vendor and their deployment model. This software's interest, by the way, we do that as well as I mentioned, over three hundred cloud providers today have a backup is a service and the engine ease their spectrum. Protect or spectrum protect. Plus, but they may call it something else. In fact, we just had a public reference out from Silver String, which is out in the UK, and all they do is cyber resiliency. Backup in archives. That's their service. They have their own product, but then spectrum Protect and Spectrum Check plus is the engine underneath their product. So that's an example. In this case, the backup is a service, which, I would argue is not infrastructure, but more of an application. But then true what you call real application providers like cyber security vendors, we have a vendor who in fact, does something for all of the universities and colleges. United States. They have about eight thousand of them, including the junior colleges, and they run all their bookstores. So when you place an order, all their air NPR, everything they do is from this SAS vendor that's based in there in the Northeast. And they've got, like I said, about a thousand colleges and universities in the U. S. And Canada, and they offer this if you will bookstore as a sass service and the students use it. University uses it. And, of course, the bookstores are designed to, you know, make a little money for the university, and they all use that. So that's another example. And they use are flash systems as well. And then they back up that data internally with spectrum protectors. They obviously it's the financial data as well as the inventory of all of these book stores all over the United States at the collegiate >> level right now. James Way gotta wrap, but just sort of give you the final word. UK specialist, right? So Brexit really doesn't affect you. Is that a fair statement >> will do? Yes. >> How so? >> I think it's too early to tell. No one really knows. I think that's that's what all the debates are about. AJ's trying to understand that on DH for us. We're just watching and observing. >> Staying focused on your customers, obviously. So no predictions as to what's going to happen. I was not from a weeks ago. I got hurt both sides. You know, it's definitely gonna happen. All right, Not happen, but up. Okay, again give you the last word. You know? What's your focus? Over the next twelve eighteen months? >> Eso all our focus is really about visibility, So they they they've touched on that. We're talking about the security for customers understanding whether data is whether exposure point saw that's all Keep keep focusing on DH versus stack on dh thie IBM store wise product underpin all of those offerings that we have on. Valentin I'm here with my co-host David Floria we're covering micron insight 2018 really bring it together memory storage and artificial intelligence talking about AI for good talking about changing the way in which we work new workloads Raj to Lori is here he's the senior vice president and general manager of microns a booming mobile business unit rise I think it's the fastest growing business unit at micron at least of XY's and Keith crescent is here is the senior vice a senior vice president at Qualcomm Keith welcome thank gentlemen thanks for coming on the cube okay thank you so right let's let's start with you what are the big trends that you see that are driving that at 60% growth rate in your business yeah I mean we are finding now that you know mobile phones and use of memory in mobile phones and this is DRAM and also use of storage in mobile phones this is where we actually you know like flash both are growing inside a mobile phone you know we've seen people launch you know four and six gigabyte phones and now we have our customers talking about 8 and 10 and 12 gigabyte phones in the future and one of the big reasons is the applications you know a lot of machine learning and AI applications from the phones and those are driving the need for a lot of increased both storage and memory so we talked about what's changing in your business over the last several years I mean mobile obviously exploded onto the scene but now people are talking about AI and mobile and and and just increase use cases and applications so what's going on from your perspective yeah I think my handset perspective there's been some visual changes right the screens got a little bigger the bezels get smaller phones get a little thinner and so you see some of the visual cues but really the excitement of what's going on underneath the visual cues so the amount of AI processing is accelerating at a rapid pace a lot of advanced cameras you know moving from two three four and now their phones with five cameras cameras to recognize depth perception there's a voice recognition so there's a lot of AI processing and a lot of capability getting into the phone for a variety of applications okay so voice recognition that makes sense you'd use AI for that but you're talking about AI in in visual and in in the handset talk more about that explain how that all works yeah so so actually I would argue that today imaging is probably the primary application of AI so cameras used to be just capturing pixels but now it's about much more than capturing pixels it's about understanding what those pixels are so are they recognizing objects or food or something else or is it facial recognition for things like payments and biometrics and so the cameras now are much more intelligent and with multiple cameras you're adding depth information so then you start to get to much higher levels of realism for things like avatar and gaming and other areas where the camera is capturing and also perceiving so not a hot dog for you fans of the show Silicon Valley so but Raj what does this all mean for the the memory and storage requirements yeah I mean eyes keep mentioned I think you know the mobile phone you know with the process from Qualcomm and and other processor vendors has really gotten to have a lot more camera applications and a lot more AI applications now there's a there's a difference when you actually drive applications that need AI and machine learning versus other applications and the difference is that the compute paradigm in AI and ml is different in the sense that these are like complex neural networks that need a load of lot of data very close to the processor to achieve the result so as more AI applications come in we are actually finding that the customers which are Qualcomm customers and our customers are asking for more processing from the airside but they're also asking for more higher speeds higher density memory to kite to couple tightly with the process so they can realize these AI applications for the consumers and also storage because sometimes you want to store a lot of the images and videos on the card so both storage and memory are increasing as applications come in but I'd like to ask about the gaming side of things and the ante AR that seems to me that is is starting to improve to a level which is frightening linear reality what do you have to do to get it to that stage where you can have true VR and have games for example which exploit that sure so maybe first I'll talk about gaming specifically gaming obviously continues to grow a lot of money in gaming gaming tournaments and so forth the gaming certainly is getting more realistic with better graphics and so forth better displays multiplayer gaming very hot right multiplayer gaming requires you know very fast connections very low latency connections to another source so play multiple players can play at the same time also many times for games you'll have a play with partners maybe you're on a team of five but now in coming soon maybe that team of five you don't need to find that fifth person or that fourth person maybe there's an AI engine that's running similar to the human capability and you're actually playing with a simulated player right from teams so there's in that require opens up a whole new area of processing for the games and then I think for AR and BR AR is a little further out than VR err requires some more advancements with respect to optics and so forth VR is taking you know high-end displays and AI and graphics kind of packaging it all into one to really change the paradigm of how you interact with the computer how does 5g change things is it is it as much of a game changer as people think or is there just so much data that it sort of allows us to keep pace I wonder if you can talk about 5g yeah so so you know every ten years or so there's a G transition 3G and 99 4G in 2009 now 5g in 2019 so it's not a ten-year cadence and every time when you have a G transition you couple that with a transition in computing and it changes the paradigm so what's gonna happen is 5g is gonna bring a lot more capacity a lot lower latency at the same time AI is coming in and that together is going to create a pretty powerful platform for applications for the future and then of course there's just so much more data now how do you guys keep because the you mentioned you know you've been talking to the to the street and you mentioned this morning that the the rate of bit density that is is moderating so how do you guys keep up where are your investments that allow you to keep pace yeah I mean we have a so just maybe a little bit of comment on 5g I think as the bandwidth to the device gets faster and faster there's more and more data that comes in that you can imagine for example one of the things people out of people like to do you know is to you know download content if you look at Netflix if you look at Amazon Prime if you look at even DirecTV and I have all of those you can actually download the content now and watch them offline so as it happens and that content gets to be 4k and an even higher frame rates the amount of storage that's needed to download that is getting more and more like you know you know my wife upgraded her phone the other day and the first thing she said is I want an entire Netflix season on my phone when I'm in the gym so so you know there's simple things like that I've changed a lot you know that's one of the reasons why the storage is getting so much now when you go to 5g and the download speed gets higher you can download like a 4k video really quickly now you got to put it somewhere after you downloaded so that's actually driving the need for this so before people wouldn't like download a 4k video because where would you put it so as we increase storage that kind of stuff comes really fast because you couldn't you know take a long time to download before so as the bandwidth gets higher the storage requirements the memory requirements are getting higher now what we are doing on that front is we're investing a lot you know as Sanjay and Scott talked earlier both in our fab capacity is both in our technology transitions we have a lot of new interesting technologies like new emerging memories they're actually like 3d crosspoint we talked about that kind of blur the line between storage and memory so there's a lot of new interesting technologies that will actually take advantage of that super exciting time so going back to the image processing side of that one of the trends it seems to me is that the processing is going further and further to the edge itself and going inside the camera itself do you talk a little bit about that and what it's going to take to to put that that your memory technology or bandwidth right inside the camera itself sure so so there's no doubt that you want to maximize the capability on the edge as a first step and then you want to reduce the late as much as possible to the cloud as a second step so on the edge you know if you had something for example if I'm taking a picture of you and I want face recognition I don't want to take every frame and send it up to the clouds I'm gonna waste bandwidth so on I want that capability on device and that's true for a variety of different applications you want to maximize the capability on device and then focus on the fast connection so the cloud and the device from a latency and bandwidth perspective are much tightly more tightly coupled you know you think about the evolution of computing you know obviously everything was centralized and then you know pcs the world was about pcs back then it was kind of the the centralization with it was a bit blip on the screen compared to the pcs was everything remember that and then of course mobile drove cloud through the roof and now with the edge and cloud and and mobile you're seeing just this ubiquitous capability that senses now you bring in AI you bring in machine intelligence it what do you guys envision for the for the next 10 years in terms of what the world looks like centralized decentralized distributed intelligent I mean it's just mind-boggling what's your vision well I think if you look at client devices client devices certainly generate a lot of data maybe we get a little bit of data from a sensor and a bridge but maybe we'll get a lot of data from the car traveling across that bridge and what you need to do is you need to make sense of that data locally and then transmit it back to the cloud so you want the cloud to have the most useful data or sorted data right data that can then improve you know automated driving or reduce traffic accidents and so forth but you don't want all the data sent there so what's gonna happen is on the edge there's literally you know a device is going from smartphones where there's about one and a half billion a year to billions even trillions of IOT connected devices any device that has a computing element also is can have a connectivity element also is going to have an AI element so it's gonna be a much more connected world as opposed to just connected people yeah I mean I think kids keep explained it very well you know you know if you step back a little bit I think that the history of technology and evolution has been very similar right in industry for a while but we all remember the times when we said we just did month one mainframe and everyone needs dumb terminals right then we went on to say hey you know what I think distributed computing with everyone having a pcs that I think you do now we are back to maybe we should have everything in the cloud and the edge devices so I actually think in a world goes cyclical and the more you do at the edge the more it drives the need for the cloud and we call it the virtuous cycle and I think the best way to think about it is you want the HD devices to send information not data which means they need to be for data needs to be processed with memory and compute to become information and then you send the information to the edge yeah I guess my point was that you know I've been around a while too and you're going to see the pendulum swing I feel like the pendulum is not swinging anymore it's just exploded inside it's really an exciting time in our industry guys thanks very much for coming thank you appreciate thank you all right keep right there everybody we'll
