Of diversity equity inclusion program at a core american council of renewable energy and Blair Anderson, director of public policy industries at AWS. Thanks for coming on the cube. Thanks for having us. So first of all, big announcement on stage max Peterson, head of public sector announced some big news with a core. Tell us what it >>is. Well we are going to be partnered with amazon to do a supply chain study on how we can best diversify the renewable energy supply chain. So we're actually gonna have baseline data on where we should start to be able to create a program that's going to be a model for the renewable energy industry on how to develop and support the success of black women and bipac owned um firms. So >>this program that you're running accelerate accelerate your programs and membership tell more has it worked? And why the successes having, what is amazon's relationship with it Besides funding? Is there other things you can talk about? >>Yeah. So accelerate wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for people like Shannon Kellogg with a W. S. Um who about a year ago after the George Floyd murders said, you know, what are we doing as a core? He sits on our board um in this area and we had to say nothing. So um Shannon. And a group of leaders got together and workshop this idea. Let's create a membership program for women and minority owned businesses so that they can be successful in renewable energy. Let's pick a cohort and let's do whether it takes to make them successful. Everything from introducing them to business connects, to mentoring them to even legal services for them. >>Well, yeah, this is like an interesting dynamic. Remember Andy Jassy was on stage when he was the ceo of a W S a year ago, I kind of was preaching, you hate that, I said that word, but preaching to the audience build, build, build, there's an entrepreneurship, public sector vibe going on right now, very entrepreneurial across every industry. I mean, this is a real thing that's going on. >>Yeah, so we're super excited about this opportunity, the work that core has done to lead on this program for the last year, especially with Constance coming in, becoming the leader has kind of been able to take this idea that she mentioned that AWS was kind of a founding member at the genesis of it about a year ago. She's taking this idea that many of these folks put on paper And been able to turn it into a really hard substantive efforts to move it forward. So we've been able to have great conversations with many of these 15 companies that have been brought into the program and start building a relationship with them. I think, as you have seen around a WS like we believe strongly in innovation and creativity. the renewable energy industry is very similarly there is a lot of kind of thinking big and innovative spirit that needs to take place in that space and having the diversity at all levels of these companies is kind of an important component to be able to move that entrepreneurship forward. >>You know, cost is one of the things that we've been reporting on until getting on the cube is right in the wheelhouse of what you're doing is a cultural change happening. And that cultural change with amazon and cloud computing is causing structural changes which are opportunities like radical structural changes. So that means old incumbent, the old guard as you guys call it, this can be replaced not because people hate them because they're inadequate. So you start to see this kind of mindset shift, entrepreneurial, impact oriented I can make a change but actually I can level up pretty quick because the people in charge don't know cloud, I mean I hate to put it bluntly like that, but if you're not on that edge, if you're not not on that wave, your driftwood. >>Yeah. You know it's funny you say that I like to call it, our members are making systemic disruptions to the system in a very equitable way, meaning our members are in communities like Chicago Jackson Tennessee there in the north end of texas, they are in um everywhere and they're in the communities, making these systemic disruptions to the way things happen, the way we talk about renewable energy to the way we deploy solar, they're making those kind of changes. So to your point they're doing it, we have to catch up to them because they're already out there, they're moving their entrepreneurial, >>it's like, it's like there's a class of entrepreneurship and evolving and it's like everyone's got the pedigree, this or that knowledge is knowledge and you can apply it in software, you could be shrink wrapped software you put on the shelves called shelf where no successful inventory, give it back cloud computing. If you're not successful. Like right now it's not working. So if you don't have results, no one bought it, it must not work. So it's easy to identify what's working. Yes, so that eliminates a lot of dogma, a lot of weird blocking. It's true, this is a democratization of >>absolutely, I think you're talking about transparency and transparency is one of the tenets of inclusion. If you're truly doing things to be inclusive, transparent and that's where you see the changes, that's exactly what you're talking >>about data driven. That's one thing I love about this data world data is now part of like how apps are built, it's not like a database, then you go fetch a file data is now transparently available. If you know what to look for it if it's available. So the whole old silo mentality, this is one of the amazon strength blair you guys are doing. So I have to ask how is this translating out in the public policy world because you know, when you can make this kind of change quicker, you're gonna have some wins under your belt. Yeah, you gotta double down on those. I >>think, I think there's a lot of transformation we're talking about in this conversation. You take kind of one of the missions we're talking about here, which is around clean energy and the expansion of clean energy, Aws and Amazon. We have procured 10 gigawatts of renewable power and making us the largest corporate procure globally, to kind of put that in maybe a little bit more approachable context, that's the equivalent of powering 2.5 million homes. Um and there's still farther to go to be able to meet that kind of think big that is happening in the industry right now, you have to have a broad, diverse industry to be able to reach all those communities to be, have kind of all types of different leaders in it, because we need everybody at the table both for the industry, but also for the communities that are being served. >>What does sustainability mean to you? Because this is a core focus, I know the energy things huge, but it's not obvious to some people, but it's getting better. What are the what's the core 10ets behind the sustainability strategy? >>Yeah, no, I think there's a lot of different ways you can take a stab at that for us. It's uh probably most uh out there in the public that people talk about is our climate pledge. This is kind of a um goal that we've set to be uh net zero carbon by 2040 which is 10, 10 years ahead of the paris Climate change within that. There are components of that that are related to electric vehicles, clean energy, renewable energy procurement, carbon offset programs around the world. I think throughout all of that is kind of coming back to, as you said, with sustainability and approaching climate change as a as an issue that needs a comprehensive holistic approach to talk >>about some of the stories and the members that you have because is the recruiting strategy climate change? Or is there another like how do you because renewable energy could be a no brainer, but how to get people excited? Like save the world. What's the what's the what's the, what are people aligning with then? What's their reaction? So, >>You know, it's very simply the way we see with our members, most of our members, 87% of them are in the solar area. Many of them when we talk about sustainability, how can people live their lives in a way where they save money on their energy bills? How can communities understand how they can harness their own renewable energy, make a little money from that, but also live their lives in a very peaceful, sustainable, peaceful, sustainable way. Right, so that's part of it as an example, a couple of examples is that we have um 548 capital is a member company. And keep in mind that these are early startup companies. 5 48 capital is in Chicago and their models started off with we want all homes in our communities and these are places in the hood, some of them um son text works with people, it works with spanish speaking customers solely in texas where they explain to them the benefits of renewable energy. They explain the benefits of a sustainability and what it is. I mean that's so that's kind of what we're looking >>at here is just kind of show up and just kind of telling the truth >>exactly and show them the benefits that they've kind of not been leading on. Actually. The other thing is that this is about economics. So this renewable energy movement that we're going through is about economics. It is a it's our next wave of being able to ensure americans are able to live lives in a in a way that's meaningful economic. >>Well you've got visibility on the unit economics event good energy. There's also a community angle. >>Yes, absolutely. >>About some of those stories around the community response to this idea, wow this actually is gettable. Yeah, we >>solar is one of our members and it's owned by the first female community solar own company out of. She's out of Baltimore but she has a solar farm here in D. C. And what she did was was engaged churches in how can you get involved in this renewable energy movement? How can you save money? How can you create a community around around this work? We sold as an example of that um son text, I have to mention them again. They speak with they work with only spanish speaking customers who had no clue about this and who are now making having their lives live better because of it, >>you know, affecting change is hard now you've got a tailwind with structural change in systemic opportunities there. What are the blockers? What are the blockers right now? Is an awareness, is it participation community? >>I'm sorry, it's your show and I've >>interrupted, you know, >>we talk about entrepreneurs in the space, particularly women and those from bipod communities. The first thing that you'll hear is they'll say we don't have access to capital people. The terms around getting capital to start up are tough and their barriers there's so that's one the second is awareness and that's awareness of introducing them to companies that might want to do business with them. So that's something that's a benefit for a core occurs. Members are all people who touch every renewable energy transaction from the finances to the developers to the to the buyers. So this is what makes it unique. So what we're doing with accelerate is breaking down the barriers of access to capital by introducing them to people who can potentially support their work but also introducing them to companies that can help them be a part of their supply chain, which is why the study that max announced is amazing because we're going to be able to have baseline data on what, what are the demographics of the supply chain in the renewable energy and what can we do about it? And we're gonna scale accelerate to be a model for the industry >>and that's the transparency angle. Get the baseline, understand this is classic Amazonian thinking, get the baseline, raise the bar, >>you can see why you get >>so OK, so a lot of great stories, how do people get involved? Obviously amazon is taking the lead leadership role here. What's the coolest thing you've seen so far in your programme around neutral energy um, could be story, it could be people story could be tech story. What's the coolest thing you've seen spot there? Yeah, you really did. You >>know, I think we have a company called clear look, that's a member there out of Jackson Tennessee and they're actually working with retailers are renewable energy credits to create, to create renewable energy farms in their area. And I, what I think is so cool is that she's disrupting the way that you go about using renewable energy credits. Clear loop dot org. Look them >>up in the new york times. Had a story. I'm just reading California other areas. We have a high density of electric vehicles, it's training the power grid. So this idea of coming in, come back is what it's not sure yet. It's not, this is kind of where it's going. So okay, what's the cool thing you've seen? >>No, for me, I've just enjoyed kind of, I've enjoyed the journey. I think the moment for me where I could see that this was real and this was going to be a impactful program constants organized. It's called a speed dating, a virtual speed dating for us with about eight different companies and it was fascinating to get on, spend some time being able to interact with eight different companies. Um, who we probably would not have ever had kind of introduction to before in the past either. They didn't know how to get in touch with us. We didn't know how to get in touch with them and it kind of opens your eyes to all the different ways. People are approaching this problem and starts the executives who I had in these colors. You can see their wheels spinning the ideas sparking of oh there's some cool ideas here. There's something new that we could do. We should explore further. Nothing I can announce at the moment but lots of lots of good uh I'm >>sure the baseline max got baseline studies. I'm sure there will be a lot of doubling down opportunities on success or not success because you want to have the data, you know what to work on. Its true cause a great mission. We're here for a KubeCon CloudNativeCon preview for the North America show in Los Angeles, here in person and a virtual event. Two of the co-chairs are with me again this year, Constance Caramanolis, principal engineer at Splunk, and of course, Stephen Augustus, head of Open Source at Cisco. Great to see you guys. Hey, thanks for coming on, virtually, for the preview. >> Great to be had! >> Constance: Thank you for having us. >> Stephen: Great to see you again John. (laughing) >> Constance: Yeah. >> So I love... well, KubeCon has gotten, It's my favorite event every year. This is where the DevOps actually, where the people are reading the tea leaves, connecting the dots, but also meeting up and doing what communities do best, which is set the agenda for the next, next generation that's happening in person. Last year, it was virtual. We had the European virtual KubeCon, CloudNativeCon. This year a mix. Give us a taste of updates that you want to share. Let's get, let's get into it. >> Sure. Uh, so I think, you know, um, I-I-I think uh, seeing this event in particular and uh, you know, one, we've got this, we've got this hopeful r-return to you know, some semblance of normalcy. I know that you know, over the last year and change, we've been uh, we've been kind of itching t-t-to see each other in person. And, and you know, and, and I-I think I say on a lot of uh, interviews that I, you know, one of my favorite parts of any conference is the, is the hallway track, right? It's really hard to, and, and we've- we've made, you know, we've made strides to replicate it, but there's- I don't think there's anything uh, you know, close t-to being in person, right? And, and getting to, to bounce i-ideas off of uh, your, your co-conspirators, (laughs) co-conspirators or compatriots. Um, so I'm- I'm really excited for that, um, I love the, I love the um, the mandates that we've put in place, uh, to make sure that people are uh, a little bit more safe. Um, and, you know, overall, like seeing uh- I-I think one of the things that gets me most excited is the, is the uh, the set of day zero events, right? Um, I-I think the, the increase in the uh, day zero events, we, we've got uh, Constance, what's the, what's the count at now? I'm, I'm looking over it and, and it's uh, it's, it's massive, right? You know, SupplyChainSecurityCon, Uh, the, you know, the Cloud Native for Eclipse Foundation, it's beyond, >> Too, hmm, too many to count right off the bat when I'm looking at it. >> Too many, too many to count! >> And it's also like, this is a reduced number because some people decide or some, not people, like projects, decide to do virtual uh, days or a non-conference outside of the normal KubeCon cycle because of... >> Yeah, well, let's get, let's get- >> that thing that should not be named. >> Let's get into some of the data. >> I want to jump into the trends. But just for the folks watching, this is a hybrid event, and- >> Yeah. >> There's going to be this day zero, which is the pre-programming. Which by the way, I think has evolved into a format that's just tremendous. You got the pregame, pre-event action. Very dynamic, very ad-hoc, ephemeral in the, in the, in the, in the, in the people getting together and making things happen. Then you got the structured event. It's uh, the 11th to the 12th on the pre-programming, day zero stuff, which you talked about, and then the 13th to the 15th, the main conference. It's in-person and virtual, so it's going to be a hybrid event, which should be dynamic because you have an in-person dynamic where it's a scarce resource of the face-to-face, working and trying to create synchronicity with the asynchronous environment on virtuals. So it should be an action packed and a must-watch event. So I'm personally excited, we'll be there in person. But I got to ask you guys, the co-chairs, how are you guys handling this? How are the papers coming, what's the call for talks? How are you structuring things? Can you just give a quick overview of what's, what's happening on the talks? >> Uh, talks, uh, I feel like it went really well this round. >> Um, really like, wide variety. I know it's pretty vague, but there's a wide variety of topics, uh, things that are getting I think, I feel like more popularity, like security is getting more popular. Uh, business value, one thing that I'm really passionate about, is getting a lot more traction. Uh, student track 101 is also, as always, I guess, as ever since it's been, since inception has been popular, um, it's definitely getting to the point where we're actually, well not to the point, but maybe it's just being more highlighted that a lot of the, like, like, some of the like great content from the day zeros are also showing up in KubeCon and then like, vice versa and they're kind of everywhere. Uh, Yeah, the talks I think was really- >> John: The sessions, the sessions are always driving it. Stephen I'm like from a, from a, from a maturisation standpoint, you have the, the, the people developing and then you got the f... the things are getting hardened. Can you talk about the trends around, what's kind of hardening out from a project basis on these sessions and what's forming relative to the trend line this year. >> Yeah. So, you know, so to Constance's point, I think that we're, we're starting to see some diversity in, or continued diversity and kind of the personas that are coming into the conference, right? So whether you're talking about that continuing 101 track or, the student track, which, you know, a lot of people have, have kind of jumped in and seeing that as an opportunity to, to, to not only start becoming part of the community, but also to immediately contribute to content. And then you've got that For me? It's, it's security, all day, right? I think, you know, I think that, you know, there's not a week, there's not a week that passes that I don't have a chat with someone around what's happening in security lately. And I think you'll see that highlighted in in all of the keynotes that we have planned there are, there's not one, not two, but three uh, keynotes around software supply chain security, and some of the different things that you have to consider as we're kind of walking into the space of you know, protecting, protecting your, your build pipeline, protecting your production artifacts, so that's something that really, you know, that goes to that, you know, that goes to my work on that, you know, in Kubernetes for SIG release, release engineering, that's, you know, something that we, we know that there are countless downstream consumers, right? So, some, you know, some that we may not have even had contact with yet from the upstream perspective, right? So it's, it's paramount for us to make sure that, you know, everything that we're pushing out to the community and to the wider world is safe to consume. So, so security is definitely top of mind for me. I would say for, you know, lots of things around you know, continue, continuing to talk about uh, GitOps observability. And I think, and I think that, you know, each of these, what's, you know, what's fun about um, each of these, uh, the, each of these topics, each of these areas is that they're all interconnected, right? So more and more you're seeing, you're seeing, oh, well, you know, the, you know, the Tekton folks are, you know, are talking to the Flux folks. And, and they're talking to the, the folks who are working on uh, Sigstore and Rekor and, and, and all of these fun tools about how to integrate into, you know, how to integrate into those respective areas. Um, so it's, it's, it's really a time of um, collaboration underscored by um, you know, protecting, protecting the community and the, and the end users. >> John: Yeah. We're seeing a lot of ah, um, you know, the security discussions. I mean, how far can you shift left before it becomes like standard, right? So like, you know, we're seeing that being built in. I got to ask you guys also on the trend of DevOps there's been a lot of conversations around Cloud Native, around obsolete management and in terms of ability, but data, the role of data has been different approaches on how people are leveraging machine learning and AI, can you, did that come up a lot in, in some of the, the discussions and the analysis? Because everyone's slapping machine learning on things these days, and there's a little bit of that going on, but it seems to be data and machine learning and horizontal scale, classic DevOps, things are happening. What's your reaction to, to some of those things that are happening? Can you guys, is there anything happening there? >> I feel like this year wasn't that big of a machine learning year in terms of submissions. >> Yes. >> I'm certain you agree with that, but it wasn't, as I think, like, security took a lot and, and, like, and this might also just be like, thinking about it holistically now, like security was, had such amazing submissions that it probably took a little bit of the spotlight off of when we were looking at the machine learning ones. Um... >> John: So security... >> Also I'm biased, so I think >> John: So security dominated more than, than everyone else did. >> Yeah. I think, you know, I think for this year, security is, security is dominating. I, you know, I think we even talked about this in the last uh, chat we had, um, the, you know, kind of from the AI side, I think you're, we're, we're running, there have been discussions around the, uh, you know, bias in, in AI models and um, you know, how we work through that, um, I'm not sure that we have any content for that this time around, but I think it, yeah, but I think, you know, as we start to talk about like how we collect data, you know, are, are we collecting the right types of data, how we serve it, especially as a, those relate to like collecting data at the edge, right? Like, how do we, how do we, how, how do we even deploy applications at the edge? We, we have a lot of potential solutions for that. But when you combine that with, well, how do we, how do we scrape information from the things that we're deploying from the edge, right? Or, or, or some, some of the things you'll see in the, in the program. >> Constance and Stephen, talk about the community vibe right now, because you know, that's the biggest part of this conference is seeing how the people come together, but it's also the vibe sets the tone. What's, what's the current vibe in the community that you're seeing and what do we expect this year at KubeCon, CloudNativeCon? >> Yeah, I'm going to say, I imagine the community's tired and it's been a long few, two years. It feels like 10 years, it feels like forever. And a lot of the in-person aspect that used to be like social validation, we just get like is lacking, so, but that being said, there's still been amazing, like collaboration from like the open, from like the Observability and Open Telemetry part. Like, I am seeing so many projects within the tag Observability collaborate together and making that a focus. And so even though we are tired, it's still, we're still doing good work. And we're still making a point of trying to keep that community tight even though it's much harder on Zoom and right, you know, it's going to try and do the awkward, like Zoom handshake. It just doesn't do the same thing there. But to Stephen's keynote, can't remember how long ago it is, about like resiliency. We are pretty resilient. And we're also, I think we're all learning to work at a slower pace because maybe we were working too fast beforehand. And I think that, I think that's a really good takeaway from all of this. So I think it's going to, for as safe as it can be to have some variation, it's probably going to just be like, it's going to be a big party because we're going to finally get to see each other after a long time then. >> John: Yeah. >> I hope we get to do that in a safe way. >> Stephen, you bring it in, Steve, you go. Oh, Steve, you always got the energy certainly on camera, but in person as well. >> (laughs) >> This in-person dynamic this year is huge. >> Yeah, we, >> Wh-what do you think is going to happen? What, give us your take. >> Yeah, so I mean, I, you know, I would echo Constance in saying that, you know, we're, we're, we're all tired, we're all very tired at this point. Um, but I, you know, but, they, they, the conference tagline for, for North America is, uh, is 'Resilience Realized', right? I think that, you know, throughout this, this year, um, the, the contributors, maintainers of, of all of these, you know, CNCF projects have made incredible strides uh, to empower the communities to, to, uh, to be together, to be family, to, to work better together, um, in spite of, you know, in spite of uh, location, location uh, boundaries, in spite of, you know, uh, uh, health concerns, like we've, we've really made the effort to um, to show up for each other. Um, so I think that, you know, what we'll see in the conference and, and, you know, one of my favorite tracks personally um, is the, the community track, um, so lots of, lots of content around, you know, a-around community building, around uh, I think more of the, the meta of, of maintaining communities, right? So the, you know, the, the, the, the code of conduct committee, as well as uh, steering committee uh, for Kubernetes got together um, last conference to, to talk about the values and principles of the community, right? And, and I think that, you know, that, that needs to continue to be highlighted, um, you know, some of the conversations that we've had around um, how you maintain groups, you know, how do you maintain groups, especially as um, especially as a, the, the, the size of the group grows, right? Once you escape that kind of like Dunbar's number uh, area, like it gets harder and harder to s have the s the same bandwidth conversations that you would in a smaller group, right? So making sure that we're continuing to, to have valuable conversations, but also be inclusive while we're doing that is, um, is something that will continue to be highlighted over the next year and change really. >> Well. I'm really impressed by what you guys do. And I know we're all tired getting, and we want to get back and, hats off to pulling it together and creating a great program because your, your group and your community is a social construct. It's, it's, we're all social animals. And this whole COVID virtual, now hybrid really is going to, going to show in real world as all playing out, and we're going to see how it evolves, and evolution is part of social communities. And I think that the progress has been made and, you know, and with the team and you guys putting together this great event. So my hat's off to you guys, thanks for, for doing that. Appreciate, great stuff. >> Thank you, thank you. >> Now, final question, um, what do you expect? Given, I mean, this is a social organization, um, things evolve, we're social organisms. We're going to be face to face. We're going to have virtual. We're going to have great talks, security obviously is prime time, Mainstream Enterprise Adoption in Kubernetes and Cloud Native. This is crunch time, so what do you guys expect for this event? Share your thoughts. >> Yeah, I-I think there's going to be lots of um, lots of fun, uh, I think uh more social conversations, less structured. Um, you know, i-if you have, if you haven't had the opportunity to kind of hang out on CNCF Slack, while one of these events are happening, we, we've spun up something of like a hallway track. Um, so, so people are hanging out, they're giving their takes during the um, you know, you know, in between uh talks, there, there was also a, you know, kind of after conference uh, hangout for, for the hallway track that we did. Um, so w we definitely want to continue some of that stuff. Um, as you know, between the last few conferences we've launched uh, Cloud Native TV um, and lots of great producers uh, and, and, and content over there. So you'll see, you'll see, kind of, us start to break the wall between um, that virtual content that we've created uh, across the last few months, as well as, you know, th s seeing that turn physical, right? Um, so how do we, you know, how, how do we, how do we manage that and h-how do we make that seamless for people who may be maybe participating virtually as opposed to physically, right. That there's going to be a bit of um, there, there's an aspect of like, you're, you're almost running two conferences, right. Simultaneously. So. >> It's a total experiment in the real world, but it's, it's all important. It's super important. Constance, your thoughts on, on the event, what people are expecting to see and surprises that might emerge, what do you, what's your thoughts? >> Um, I, well actually, see while you were saying something, I had an idea that I think we can make it more connected, So I just wrote it down, um, uh, I, I have some silly ideas when it comes to the conference stuff, which is why Stephen's laughing, although you can't see it. >> (both men laughing) >> Um, my, I, like, I'm, I'm trying to go in with no expectations, mostly because I'm so excited. I don't want to be disappointed um, and I don't want to miss out. I think, I actually think that probably a lot of the discussions are just going to be like, hi, like, it's so nice to actually meet you and just talk about random things. Maybe not as much technology discussions as maybe there would be at a normal, I like, ah, I don't want to say normal, right? Because we are in a new normal, like what KubeCon was several years ago. Um, I think that I do. I think that it would be probably a little painful, this hybrid part, since we don't know what to expect. I think there's going to be so many things that we're going to look back and be like, face palm and be like, oh, we should've thought about these things. So for anyone who's attending virtually, apologies in advance, and please give us feedback. There's so many things I know we're going to have to improve, we just, we don't know them yet. So please be patient with us and know that we wish that you could be there in person with us too. >> Um, uh, I don't know. >> Well, that's the thing, that's the thing. >> I'm just going to go in there with an open mind. Well that's the thing, it's, it's new, it's all new, virtual. So it's, it's, we're learning together. That's, I think, people put too much pressure. I think people like expecting, you know, some magic to happen, but it's all evolving. And I think the magic is the event. And I think, I think it's going to work out great. And by the way, there's no downside it's, you know, learn. >> Exactly! >> So, yeah. So, you know, so one of the things that I um, I, I have this spiel that I give to um, the release team, the Kubernetes release team, every time we start a new cycle, right? Um, you've got a set of returning contributors. You've got a set of uh, net new contributors, right? And um, and, and moving into the release team, you're kind of like thrown right into the fire of Kubernetes, right? So it's, it's, it's one of those things. I, I, I come in and, and, and, essentially say, um, be curious, question everything. Um, this is like, it's a, it's, it's very much like a human experience, right? And I think that, you know uh, to, to Constance's point, we're all here to, to learn and grow, make this a better experience for everyone. Um, so bring yourself, like bring yourself to the conference, right? I think it's, you know, in, in terms of offering feedback, we have, you know, feedback forms for every one of the, you know, every one of the, the talks that you attend, um, you can feel free to reach out to Constance, and myself and, and Jasmine, um, if you have feedback that you want to give personally, you know, there, there are, there are ways to get in touch with us. There are ways to make the event better. And I think that every time we, we uh, we incorporate, like, we incorporate a lot of this feedback into the next conference. So every time um, you provide some piece of information for us, that gives us an opportunity to make it better, right? So this conference is built, uh, this conference is built by the community, right? The, you know, it's not just a, you know, it's not a, you know, it's not a body just uh making, making decisions kind of off the cuff, it's, we are taking your ideas and we're trying to turn them into a program, right? So it's, it's the maintainers, it's the end users. It's the students, it's people who have never used Kubernetes in their lives, or never used Cloud Native technology in their lives. It's folks who are coming from the, you know, the, the corporate IT kind of classic uh, background, and, and just trying to understand how to be effective in this, in this new world for them. Um so it's like, it takes all kinds and we, we don't get it done without your feedback. So please, um, as you're coming to the conference, whether it's in-person or virtually, like, bring yourselves, be curious, ask questions, um, provide that feedback. And then um, and I think, you know, from the, you know, th-the kind of from the uh, the, yes, we need to be human, but we also need to um recognize some of the, the requirements, uh, that, that are, that we have going into this conference. So reminder that, you know, all of, all of the events are under, you know, under a code of conduct, please make sure to familiarize yourself with uh, code of conduct. I think that um, you know, I-I think that coming back into a physical space for a lot of people, the um, the, some of the social skills can, can erode over time. So please not just bring yourself, bring your best self. And, you know, be sure to review all of the policies around health and, and safety as we go into this. >> Constance, Stephen, that's great stuff. Love talking with you guys. Go ahead. >> I want to add one thing, also be gentle with yourself and like, be really kind to yourself and others, because this is going to be really overwhelming. We are here covering KubeCon and CloudNativeCon North America 2020, November 17th to the 20th, a virtual event. Normally we're there in person, but again, 2020 has been a crazy year, we're not going to be able to be there in person, but we're here remotely. We have two great guests, the co-chairs of KubeCon and CloudNativeCon Stephen Augustus senior, open source engineer VMware KubeCon CloudNativeCon chair and Constance Caramanolis principal software here at Splunk and you guys are co-chairs of KubeCon. Big responsibility, thank you for coming on. >> Thank you. Thank you for having us. >> Thank you for having us. >> Okay so we, the number one question every year is before it gets started is, how did you make the selections for the talks, what's the hottest thing going on, what's the focus for this KubeCon? >> Well, so actually we use a Ouija board to choose the talks. (laughing) No, I'm joking it doesn't happen that way. >> Yeah, yeah, it's pretty much all out of a hat, but seriously, we spent a lot of time with talks that showed, I guess diversity and integration in the community. So, what projects are starting to pick up steam? What projects are starting to integrate more deeply with other ones? So you'll see lots of commentary around, multi cluster items within cloud native technologies, as well as, lots of content on security, which I'm excited about. >> Yeah, and also things are like, there's a little bit like, kind of to your point about like things layered on, like we're starting to get to the point where people are talking about like hey, I deployed Kubernetes and Envoy and something else. And like, these are starting to be a lot more of these kind of joint talks there that actually even make it harder for us to place. Like, does it belong in networking? Does it belong in application development? Like there've been some really good challenges trying to figure out where things are slotted and what's right- >> You know one of the things I love about KubeCon besides being fun to go to while it's face to face is even with the virtual, it's still a great community. The talks are awesome, people are submitting talks. But you got the sixth year, I think it's a six year or fifth year. We've been there for all years. I think this is the sixth year for us, the maturation, the growth and of Kubernetes now it's pretty clear. This glue layer, is gluing things together the API is extending to service and more services. Can you guys comment on what you guys are seeing in terms of some of the practical projects and how they're playing out for developers? Because you're starting to see you know, more clusters you've got cloud you've got multi-cloud around the horizon. So you've got more of these conversations where you have more capabilities but the focus on the modern application building is the number one business focus. So, you know, the developers are trying to build out under the covers and say, how do I scale this? So, this seems to be the kind of a growth year and inflection point for that next level. It seems like next level. Steven, what's your thoughts and reactions to that? >> Yeah absolutely. So, as a former, I've been out a few cloud native companies at this point so more or less from Red Hat before heading over to VMware. And as a former field engineer and solutions architects at some of these places, we spent a lot of time thinking through what is the days, zero day one story, right? And it's very clear that as a community, we've gotten to the point where like that is officially the boring stuff, right? Seeing a lot of the features within projects like (indistinct) and Cluster API come to maturation. We start to focus a lot more on that developer story, right? And ultimately that's what we care about, right? Businesses are not necessarily looking for a new tool to play around with, right? There are business goals that are tied to the new technologies, right? So the velocity in which you deploy your applications, the feedback loop in terms of understanding, you know, what ties into your application, where things are going wrong and, you know, Constance can definitely speak to the, the observability layer for all of these cloud native applications that are out there. >> Constance, observability I hear is really hot right now, what's your take on it, I mean is observability everywhere? New startup comes out and you work at Splunk, they're the King King of observability, they started out with very small observation space now it's a full platform. You have to look at the observation space to get the data that's the internet. >> You do. >> That's semi application. What's hot in observability? Take us through your thoughts. >> I think what's also starting to like, so you're still like, there's some, I can think of like one talk right now, it's a little bit talking about like, you know, observability at scale in a sense of just like now we have these massive applications and saying we globally and to observe and monitor observe right now, I'm not going to use a tourism changeable. I know that's a total different debate the available topic, but for now, just keep it at that. But it's also now, I think one thing as observability space and maturing is we're not talking only about like, hey, I instrument my like application with metrics, logs, traces, or some other thing there. It's now being a little bit more critical about how, if I'm using all three of these are all different telemetries, like how to be smart about it. Like, okay, I'll need to use traces for some things and let me use logs for something else. And like kind of getting to reach a part of like, now that we have that data let's actually think about better ways to use that data. So we don't, you know, collect everything cause you can't collect everything as much as we want to. >> Well, I mean this is something that I want to get your both thoughts on because one of the conversations we're hearing from developers and we hear it from them on the business size everything is a service, that's like the ivory tower you know, the CXOs, everything is as a service and then it down into the developers in the engineering community and they're like, well, it's not that easy 'cause you got tools for every platform, right? And that's a problem because these siloed tools are tools that were built for a certain products. And then you've got the systems thinking you guys talk about this integration is a key area. So making everything is as a service, just isn't that easy, right? So the goal is to make it easy, right? So this is the systems conversation. How do you guys look at that from a KubeCon, CloudNativeCon because cloud native does enable a lot of, good things. It's horizontally scalable cloud from a resource standpoint, you've got programmability. You can look at it as a system but people are stuck with these tools for the platform. I mean, you have tools for this, tools for that and five different tools, how do you make observability work? How do you make security work? These are tough questions. What's your reaction to that? >> I think that a lot of it comes down to, from a building perspective and, you know, taking the builder perspective and then also taking the consumer perspective. For builders, and I actually spent some time with, at some developer heads in New York, we sat down for a dinner and kind of talked, talked through some of the problems in the space. And I think what it really comes down to is when we build tools we need to think about who we're building the tools for, right? There are multiple personas that you might look at in the cloud native space. And, you know, one might be the persona of that systems integrator, of the classic Opsy, DevOps SRE role, right? Then you've got someone who may be building tools on top of one of those Ops platforms, right? And then you've got the consumers that may be in your company maybe they're external, right? That's for their experience, they're really only interested in how do I ship my app, right? So whether we're talking about building out Kubernetes or whether we're talking about a server less platform, right? So sort of Alyssa and the cloud, right? You often hear the, it runs on, it's running on someone else's machine, right? You know, it's not really, so I think in that space you have to consider a developer experience, right? So I think one of the overarching themes that you'll see throughout this KubeCon is, how do we talk about the developer experience? Who are we building these tools for? How can we actually get outcomes that end users are looking for? Right, cause it's not, again, it's not about the tools it's about the outcomes for the respective businesses. >> Constance what's your reaction to this trend of tools. >> I think. >> Edge computing, 'cause you you don't want to have to build security for everything, single thing. I've got an edge device, I want to have that'd be software operated, right? It makes total sense. But making that happen is hard. >> Yeah, I think this is something that as a community like we're really, I guess like kind of how I use example like end user docs versus restaurants documentation. I think that we've been, done a really good job at creating these really powerful tools but like in terms of, we still need to simplify them for anyone who doesn't want to learn, like say Kubernetes or Envoy or open telemetry, like the back of their hand. And I think that's where we're starting to finally start to close that gap. And as I think also why KubeCon is getting a lot more popular is like now things are a little bit more accessible to those who don't have, you know, either don't have the bandwidth or it just it isn't in their interest to learn all these things in details. And so we're slowly going from those who want to be deep, deep experts into, yeah I kind of want to play around with it and make it more manageable. And, I do think we still have quite a bit of ways to go. Like I think, you know, what's been helpful like at least like our end user stories that we get and like the application development track, especially that one, like the case studies that there's no longer track but it is highlighted as like these talks and case studies. I think that shows it's kind of giving people more like, hey, these are stories of how I can take these tools and start making them more digestible in my own way. 'Cause going from like, oh, this feature does XYZ to, this is a whole story that you can do around it. It's been a little very gap, we're closing. >> Yeah, and I think one of the things about you kind of being shy there, I'll say, KubeCon, CloudNativeCon, CNCF in general has been very successful because of the end user focus I will say that. But also the ecosystem of the vendors that are there. So you have kind of the best of both worlds and they'll want to get better, right? So, but they al have to make money at the same time. So you have this balance, is open source, is what it is, it's out in the open. Can you guys comment on how the community is thriving and surviving? We're in a tough time with the pandemic. It's been a big challenge honestly, we're not in person we're remote. How is everything going with the community? Because it's such a great end user vendor community working together out in the open shipping code, trying to make things better. What's the state of the community? >> Yeah, so I would say that honestly, what it comes down to is that word community, we're all friends, right? There are people who, you know, as the, as we moved towards is kind of like cloud native consolidation of companies. A lot of us have worked together before, right? A lot of us are active in multiple communities and what comes out of that is really open and honest collaboration as a result. You know, even today there's a Twitter thread going, you know, I started talking about the Kubernetes release cadence, right? And if, and how it should change. Given 2020, we had an extended release cycle for 119, right? And questions became, what do we do? Like, do we continue with three releases a year? Do we try for, to do the switch back to four? Like, what does that look like? Right. And reaching out across the Kubernetes community across the CNCFC, the contributor strategy saying in CNCF and getting feedback from all of these people who depend on the products that we build day to day is huge. So I think what it comes down to really is, is open and honest collaboration. I think, you know, when you were strained I know that everyone has a lot going on in life right now. What's great about it is being forthcoming with that, right? We have all of these teams that are, that are built to support the people that are around them. So, if anything, I, you know, I'd love to see all of the collaboration and feedback coming from everyone who works on these projects day to day. >> Yeah. >> Constance what's your reaction? I mean when, I've talked of some developer friends of mine, they're like, hey, this is great, I can work virtually, I've been doing it for years anyway. So no big deal. It's not like the people who have to go to the office every day. So they're used to virtual format. The other comment was, I get more time to do some gaming too. Trying to make light out of the bad situation, but you know, it is serious. What's your reaction to the survival and the thriving continue thriving of the community? >> Yeah, I also want to eventually go back to cause you're making a comment about vendors and now this is my first time as vendor. I have interesting, I like, it's a really interesting perspective to come from, but let's talk about the community. I think like, you know, it's like one of the things that like I think actually has been one of the highlights of this year for me, for 2020, it like to be co-chair but it's also just to like be able to work with Stephen and Nancy and the rest of the CNCF community. And also like any attendees, like has actually even though this is a big year of change and it's, you know, it was a change that no one was planning. It has definitely been like really nice to just get like Kube, I guess would say as an example, the story like for KubeCon you, like I was surprised at how many people were engaged in the Slack channel and asking questions and like Priyanka has set up these happy hours and people are just joining and we're starting to talk and so it wasn't quite hallway track but we still had that connection. And there was definitely, there are people who are attending from all parts of the world. And I thought that was really nice. Like, we think CNCF has made it, like they have made the statement before that there will always be a virtual component to it to address the fact that, you know, our community we're so used to being in person, but that does, you know it does reduce accessibility to those who can't travel or for whatever reason they can't be there in person. So now it is becoming more open. And, I know, I mean kind of turning back a little bit a little bit derail, I'm a little bit derailing but to your point about like also like the vendors. And so this is my first time being a part of a vendor. And I think what's really interesting is like, there's this natural like, you know, tension between like, oh, some were like, oh, I don't want to do it from the vendors, or like, I only want things from end users. But I think the thing that I've kind of forget is that both of them are like active, you know, they're active in the community, both in either contributing or enabling others to be successful using CNCF projects. And so we all have, you know, valid points and perspectives on it really. You can maybe sometimes argue that sometimes being a vendor is almost a bonus because you get to talk to maybe more people who are trying to adopt the technology and you get to see trends. And then after as an end user, you could say like, hey, I have this really unique problem here and this is how I try to solve it and share that story with other people, so. >> Yeah, I mean, I think you're right. I mean, there's checks and balance I've observed over my years in open source you've seen certain things thrive certain ways. And I think that balance and, but having the mission and kind of a rules of engagement if always seen well, good, worked well for CNCF they embraced the vendors really well, but they're, I mean I will say paranoid cause that's my word. But like they're paranoid of the vendors I would be too, like, you know, only to get their fingers in the pie, but they're also contributing. So there's always been that checks and balance and that's, what's been magical I think about it is that they fostered the community, they fostered the engagement and they fostered that balance. And I think that's where the give and get comes in. And I think that's a healthy community and I just love to see and love to be involved with. So, it's super, super good approach. Now, putting back the vendor hat on, if I'm a vendor, I want a competitive advantage. So yeah, this brings us to the next gen conversation open source goes and going next gen, you're seeing a big focus on AI, you're seeing a big focus on, you know, edge computing which is going to be software operated, software defined, which cloud native will lead. I got to get your perspective on something. Steven said at the top was security. Every conversation for the past five months with Dave has been shift left. So, okay. Where are we going left? We're shifting left. This is about security. How do you build security in? This has been a big conversation. It's not easy problem. I know it's a top focus. I want to get your reactions Steve and we'll start with you then Constance I would like you to weigh in too. >> Yeah sure, so, security, security is already strict, right? And I think that people start to put the focus on security when it's a little too late, right? The move is always preventative as opposed to reactive, right? And security is an onion, right? So it's not enough to just think about security on one axis, right? It's, you know, how is this affecting, you know, how is this affecting my application, the systems that I build, the physical, you know, the physical restraints of the, you know, of the area, right? Infrastructure, the cloud providers that I'm running on, right? Are they a certain level of compliant, right? Especially when that comes up for federal customers, right? On the application side, right? You know, if you think of, you know, if you think of all the, the different ways that you can break an application that hurts security now with the cloud native space container security, right? Am I building a safe Docker files or build packs or what have you, however you package your application. And ultimately you have to, you know and then there's also the supply chain, right? Am I getting, how am I moving that stuff from some physical infrastructure or some cloud infrastructure into the hands of the developers, into the hands of the customers? How do I react to changes once those applications have actually been deployed? Right? So like all of these things to consider and when you look at that space, these are multiple teams, right? These are dozens and dozens of teams across, you know, multiple companies, right? You may not have, you may not have full control of your security story, right? So I think that, what, you know what you need to do is start the conversation internally about how we can build security at multiple layers, right? So some of the things that are kind of interesting to see pop up during this KubeCon and some of, you know, and some of the last ones, the continued work that's happening on OPA and Gatekeeper spiffy and Spire, right? And, you know, all of these, all these frameworks for authentication and authorization that are kind of cropping up, right? I think, you know, Spiffy and Spire really interesting story because, you know, the first thing that you think is I have these cloud native applications that I'm building and I also have these legacy applications, right? How can I build a bridge between the two? Right? And then you've also got things like, you know, service mesh, right? And you start to talk about service mesh and, you know, the security within applications that live inside a cluster or across cluster, right? And how you negotiate that. So tons of things to think about, and, you know, it's honestly going to it's honestly going to depend on where you are in your journey but I think that, you know, good security is only built by having the conversation and having the conversation across all teams and doing it before you get into trouble. >> Do it before you get in trouble have it baked in from the beginning, brush your teeth make sure you're all healthy. Constance your reaction, (laughing) your reaction. >> So I will say like, I am unfortunately one of those people that like security, well security is just not something that I guess going to say I find super exciting. And it mostly just because I, I really love observability and like service mesh and so I usually defer to the experts on that, but I do want to like, I guess plus when some of what Steven said, obviously using git hub, you know, terminology for plus and what you know, enhancing things like definitely started early and it, but I think, you know, start early, start a conversation. But I think we also need just be cognizant of like for any of the technologies, like if it's security say networking whatever, all of these things are behavior changes and just bucket more time than you think you're going to need. There's going to be so many roadblocks and especially when it comes like, especially when it comes to behavior changes. Like, if you're and behavior, but not like necessarily like a personal, but like, you know, technology behavior like you're used to sending things without MTLS, right? Or, you know, with our backs, things are going to fail and, you know, there's going to be that initial friction and so definitely trying to make this smooth as possible. >> Yeah, I mean, I think that's the focus I like to see more of which is having it be built in. So if you're really not into it, but you don't want to screw it up either so you want to be on top of it without doing it, right? That's the end game, right? That's what DevOps is about. So if you don't have programming infrastructure write code. So all these things, this is the trend this is the trend that we're seeing in cloud native. Can you guys share your thoughts this year on, on the most important stories that you think people should think about or lean into or at least look at for KubeCon? What are some of the things that attendees or people watching remotely or participating virtually or in the Slack channels, what should they pay attention to? >> So starting with, I think even with the last KubeCon and some of the products that have recently come out from certain vendors, we're starting to look a lot more at the, what is that conversion story for someone who is a classic CIS admin, right? Who may be learning all about cloud native technology for the first time, or how do we, you know, how do we welcome a new KubeCon attendee to the community? So I think one of the best things that we did was instantiate that's a one-on-one track, right? So with the one-on-one track, I think we got a bunch of great feedback. So we work to make sure that they were actually, we eliminated I believe we fully eliminated the lightning talks and work to include more one-on-one content as well as tutorials within this program. >> Constance, your reaction, Constance your reaction to thoughts on the most important story to pay attention to? >> I think it's more, right, cause, okay, I know this is like a common line that we say at KubeCon and like, you know, depends what group your on. But since so many more of our talks we're now talking about intersections between like, you know, using X and Y try to build Z, Zed. Oh my goodness I'm trying, I'm losing my Zeds. I think trying to like, you know looking for those talks that at least somewhat resonated like, hey, I've already talked to communities, let me see how I add Envoy. Like, trying to find those there because there's a lot more of that content now, right? Cause maybe you know, about like to even last KubeCon or like last KubeCon North America, a lot of the things were more focused on like one project, maybe a hint or you're just going to see more of these combinations. And so there are a lot more, there's a lot more of that content available for you to find. I'm doing two, three, maybe four, It's a lot of projects at once, adoptions and seeing how that works too. Oh yeah, one-on-one track has definitely been definitely like a great hit. I'm going to say, right? The first time it was launched and we got so many CFPs for one-on-one it was just amazing to see all these ways that people wanted to make KubeCon more accessible to everyone else who hasn't been a part of, you know. >> It's every year, it's every year the onboarding of new members of the community would be impressive. And having that tracker laddering or different ways to work as a community to help people along has been another thing I noticed you guys do really well on. There's a real camaraderie amongst the community. So a hat tip for you guys on that. Final question for you guys is more about the format. Obviously it's virtual this year the game is still the same. There's talks, there's people, there's hallways, but they're virtual, I guess you're virtually walking through Slack and discord or Twitter, whatever. What's the learnings from last event, as we're going into virtual, how does an attendee maximize their time, their engagement there's times to lean in and be present, attending a talk, you mentioned Slack Constance. What's some of the learnings that you guys have learned from virtual? And what can people think about and prepare for, for KubeCon virtual this year? >> Yeah, I think one way you start it. So, there's actually a resource, this came from our debrief for me, it was like there's a resource like, hey, let me help get the day off. And like, we even provided template to like provide to your, you know, direct to your managers. Say like can I please get this day off so I could focus on it? And I think that's one thing that and I think we'd all probably seen on Twitter and blogs is that even though it is virtual it is still a brain drain, well it's still, you know, you have to engage with a topic so set aside time. I would probably even say attend fewer talks, than you would normally do in person there is zoom fatigue, I guess it's been from on screen fatigue. So just give yourself a lot more space to consume the information and just debrief and also join the activities, right? Like ask questions in Slack. There's a lot of the virtual events like there's bingo there's even an escape room, which sounds like a lot of fun, all these different activities too that you can do with everyone. So like definitely enjoy that part, right? 'Cause you still get a little bit off until you just say like hey, you mentioned this project, let's chat offline. And then, you know, a few weeks later you may be on a four hour long Zoom meeting talking about some project. And so, yeah >> Yeah, I noticed the hang space kind of mindset of virtual was pretty cool. Be mindful to introduce yourself and either do a sidebar or jump on some back channel. I mean, there's plenty of tools, developers know what they are, so pretty good point I want to call that out. Good, good point Constance. Steven, your thoughts on learnings from the virtual format and then things this year people should pay attention to and jump in and use the site for. >> Yeah, so I would say if anything the previous attendees gave lots of thoughtful feedback about how to improve the overall program. One of my favorite parts of any conference and it's the part that I prioritize more than anything else in the conference even the talks, right? Is the hallway track, right? It's one of the few times, you know, especially with KubeCon and the various contributors across the cloud native space that's the, you know, the one time every quarter or so that I get an opportunity to see these people face to face, right? So, you know, we wanted to do our best to bring in experience that felt, you know, it's not the, you know, it's not the same as the physical hug, right? Or the, you know, or going out for, you know, going out for dinner after a long day. But we tried and we laughed through lots of crazy ideas that the event team, to see what they would come up with for me as a New York resident and having a conference that is any virtual but would have been in Boston, I thought it was important thinking about screen fatigue, as well as just the physicality of where people would have been at the time, is the start time of the conference, right? So as Constance was mentioning screen fatigue it's, I think with all of the virtual conferences going on, it's very hard to have that time during the day, right? So this KubeCon for folks on the East coast it starts basically at your lunchtime. So the idea is, hopefully you get some, you get some of your meetings in for the day, grab a bite to eat and then you sit down for lunch and you, and you dig into some KubeCon, so. >> Yeah, and you can have any lunch you want and then later of you will be able to eat lunch from the conference. That's awesome. The other thing I love about the, what you guys said is the hallway tracks. And I think one of the things I've noticed going to a lot of virtual events and doing them is, Constance you're right, it's mentally draining to lean into a talk because you're present, even though you're virtual. So taking time to get involved in the fun activities or just, you know, wandering Slack or doing a sidebar with the hallways is kind of a have some time off like the time to regroup and not be so, you know, leaned into a session, I find that to help on the fatigue side for sure. The other one is viewing parties. We popped into some, you know, Zooms together and we watched each other watch the session, right? So viewing parties has been one trick I've seen work well, other ones I've seen people toast beer at a certain time. The Germans obviously do at first, cause they're on the time zone, but you start to see these playful things. You know, people can share their kind of position where they are. So it's fun. We'll look forward to seeing that. Okay, final comments, Steven, Constance. What's the bumper sticker this year for KubeCon? >> Ooh, have we decided yet Constance? (laughing) >> Velvet jackets are required for entry. (laughing) I'll make word sense after you see a special message from us. >> Narrator: From around the globe, it's theCUBE with coverage of KubeCon and CloudNativeCon Europe 2020 Virtual brought to you by Red Hat, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation and ecosystem partners. >> Hi I'm Stu Miniman and this is theCUBE's coverage of KubeCon, CloudNativeCon the 2020 European show of course happening virtually and that has put some unique challenges for the people running the show, really happy to welcome to the program she is one of the co-chairs of this event, and she is also a Principal Software Engineer at Splunk, Constance Caramanolis thank you so much for joining us. >> Hi, thank you for having me, I'm really excited to be here, it's definitely an interesting time. >> Alright, so Constance we know KubeCon it's a great community, robust everybody loves to get together there's some really interesting hallway conversations and so much going on, we've been watching, the four or five years we've been doing theCUBE at this show, just huge explosion of the breadth and depth of the content and of course, great people there. Just, if we could start with a little bit, your background, as I mentioned you're the co-chair, you work for Splunk by way of an acquisition, of Omnition try saying that three times fast, and Omnition you were telling me is a company that was bought really before it came out of stealth, but when it comes to the community itself, how long have you been involved in this community? What kind of led you to being co-chair? >> Yeah, I guess I've been involved with the community since 2017, so, I was at Lyft before Omnition Splunk, and I was lucky enough to be one of the first engineers, on Envoy you might've heard of Envoy, sorry I laugh at my own jokes. (laughing) Like my first exposure to KubeCon and seeing the CNCF community was KubeCon Austin and the thing that I was amazed by was actually you said it the hallway tracks, right? I would just see someone and be like, "Hey, like, I think I've seen your code review can I say hi?" And that started back on me at least a little bit involved in terms of talking to more people then they needed people I would work on a PR or in some of the community meetings and that was my first exposure to the community. And so I was involved in Envoy pretty actively involved in Envoy all the way until from 2016 until mid 2018 and then I switched projects and turning it left and did some other stuff and I came back into CNCF community, in OpenTelemetry as of last year, actually almost exactly a year ago now to work on making tracing, I'm going to say useful and the reason why I say useful is that usually people think of tracing as, not as important as metrics and logs, but there is so much to tracing that we tend to undervalue and that's why I got involved with OpenTelemetry and Omnition, because there's some really interesting ways that you could view tracing, use tracing, and you could answer a lot of questions that we have in our day-to-day and so that's kind of that's how I got involved in the second-round community and then ended up getting nominated to be on the co-chair and I obviously said yes, because this is an amazing opportunity to meet more people and have more of that hallway track. >> Alright, so definitely want to talk about OpenTracing, but let's talk about the event first, as we were talking about. >> Yeah. >> That community you always love the speakers, when they finish a session, they get mobbed by people doing questions. When you walk through the expo hall, you go see people so give us a little bit of insight as to how we're trying to replicate that experience, make sure that there's I don't know office hours for the speakers and just places and spaces for people to connect and meet people. >> Yeah, so I will say that like, part of the challenge with KubeCone EU was that it had already been meant to be an in person event and so we're changing it to virtual, isn't going to be as smooth as a KubeCon or we have the China event that's happening in a few weeks or at Boston, right that's still going on, like, those ones are being thought out a lot more as a proper virtual event. So a little bit of the awkwardness of, now everything is going to be online, right? It's like you can't actually shake someone's hand in a hallway but we are definitely trying to be cognizant of when I'm in terms of future load, like probably less content, right. It's harder to sit in front of a screen and listen to everything and so we know that we know we have enough bandwidth we're trying to find, different pieces of software that allow for better Q and A, right? Exactly, like the mobbing after session is go in as a speaker and one as attendee is sometimes like the best part about conferences is you get to like someone might've said something like, "Hey, like this little tidbit "I need to ask you more questions about this." So we're providing software to at least make that as smooth, and I'm putting this in quotation and as you'll be able to tell anyone who's watching as I speak with my hands. Right, so we're definitely trying to provide software to at least make that initial interaction as smooth as possible, maybe as easy as possible we know it's probably going to be a little bit bumpy just because I think it's also our first time, like everyone, every conference is facing this issue so it's going to be really interesting to see how the conference software evolves. It is things that we've talked about in terms of maybe offering their office hours, for that it's still something that like, I think it's going to be really just an open question for all of us, is that how do we maintain that community? And I think maybe we were talking or kind of when I was like planting the seed of a topic beforehand, it's like it's something I think that matters like, how do we actually define community? 'Cause so much of it has been defined off that hallway track or bumping into someone, right? And going into someone's booth and be like, like asking that question there, because it is a lot more less intimidating to ask something in person than is to ask it online when everyone gets to hear your question, right. I know I ask less questions online, I guess maybe one thing I want to say is that for now that am thinking about it is like, if you have a question please ask questions, right? If recording is done, if there's a recording for a talk, the speakers are usually made available online during the session or a bit afterwards, so please ask your questions when things come up, because that's going to be a really good way to, at least have a bit of that question there. And also don't be shy, please, even when I say like in terms of like, when it comes to review, code reviews, but if something's unintuitive or let's say, think about something else, like interact with it, say it or even ask that question on Twitter, if you're brave enough, I wouldn't but I also barely use Twitter, yeah I don't know it's a big open question I don't know what the community is going to look like and if it's going to be harder. >> Yeah, well, one of the things I know every, every time I go to the show conferences, when the keynote when it's always like, okay, "How many people is this your first time at the show?" And you look around and it's somewhere, third or half people attending for the first time. >> Yeah. I know I'm trying to remember if it was year and a half ago, or so there was created a kind of one-on-one track at the show to really help onboard and give people into the show because when the show started out, it was like okay, it was Kubernetes and a couple of other things now you've got the graduated, the incubated, the dozens of sandbox projects out there and then even more projects out there so, cloud-native is quite a broad topic, there is no wrong way where you can start and there's so many paths that you can go on. So any tips or things that we're doing this time, to kind of help broaden and welcome in those new participants? >> Yeah so there's two things, one is actually the one to attract is official for a KubeCon EU so we do have like, there's a few good talks in terms of like, how to approach KubeCon it was meant to originally be for a person but at least helping people in terms of general terms, right? 'Cause sometimes there's so much terminology that it feels like you need to carry, cloud-native dictionary around with you, doing that and giving suggestions there, so that's one of the first talks that's going to be able to watch on KubeCon so I highly suggest that, This is actually a really tough question because a lot of it would have been like, I guess it would have been for me, would have been in person be like, don't be afraid to like, if you see someone that, said something really interesting in a talk you attended, like, even if it's not after the question, just be like, "Hey, I thought what you said was really cool "and I just want to say I appreciate your work." Like expressing that appreciation and just even if it isn't like the most thoughtful question in the world just saying thank you or I appreciate you as a really good way to open things up because the people who are speaking are just as well most people are probably just as scared of going up there and sharing their knowledge as probably or of asking a question. So I think the main takeaway from that is don't be shy, like maybe do a nervous dance to get those jitters out and then after (laughing) and then ask that question or say like, thank you it's really nice to meet you. It's harder to have a virtual coffee, so hopefully they have their own teapot or coffee maker beside them, but offered you that, send an email I think, one thing that is very common and I have a hard time with this is that it's easy to get overwhelmed with how much content there is or you said it's just like, I first feel small and at least if everyone is focusing on Kubernetes, especially like a few years ago, at least and you're like, maybe that there are a lot of people who are really advanced but now that there's so many different people like so many people from all range of expertise in this subject matter experts, and interests that it's okay to be overwhelmed just be like, I need to take a step back because mentally attending like a few talks a day is like, I feel like it's taking like several exams 'cause there's so much information being bombarded on you and you're trying to process it so understand that you can't process it all in one day and that's okay, come back to it, right. It's a great thing is that all of these talks are recorded and so you can watch it another time, and I would say probably just choose like three or four talks that you're really excited about and listen to those, don't need to watch everything because as I said we can't process it all and that's okay and ask questions. >> Some great advice there because right, if we were there in person it was always, attend what you really want to see, are there speakers you want to engage with? Because you can go back and watch on demand that's been one of the great opportunities with the virtual events is you can have access on demand, you can poke and prod, personally I love that a lot of them you can adjust the speed of them so, if it's something that it's kind of an intro talk, I can crank it up to one and a half or 2X speed and get through more content or I can pause it, rewind if I'm not getting it. And the other opportunity is I tell you the last two or three years, when I'm at an event, I try to just spend my time, not looking at my phone, talking to people, but now there's the opportunity, hey, if I can be of help, if anybody in the community has a question or wants to get connected to somebody, we know a lot of people I'm easily reachable on Twitter and I'm not sitting on a plane or in the middle of something that being like, so there is just a great robust community out there, online, and it were great be a part of it. So speaking of projects, you mentioned OpenTelemetry, which is what, your day job works on it's been a really, interesting topic of course for those that don't know the history, there were actually two projects that merged, it was a OpenTracing and OpenCensus created OpenTelemetry, so why don't you bring us up to speed as to where we are with the project, and what people should be looking at at the show and throughout the rest of 2020? >> OpenTelemetry is very exciting, we just did our first beta release so for anyone who's been on the fence of, is OpenTelemetry getting traction, or is it something that you're like at, this is a really great time to want to get involved in OpenTelemetry and start looking into it, if it's as a viable project, but I guess should probably take a step back of what is OpenTelemetry, OpenTelemetry as you mentioned was the merging or the marriage of OpenTracing-OpenCensus, right? It was an acknowledgement that so many engineers were trying to solve the same problem, but as most of us knows, right, we are trying to solve the same problem, but we had two different implementations and we actually ended up having essentially a lot of waste of resources because we're all trying to solve the same problem, but then we're working on two different implementations. So that marriage was to address that because, right it's like if you look at all of the major players, all of the players on OpenTelemetry, right? They have a wide variety of vendor experience, right even as of speaking from the vendor hat, right vendors are really lucky that they get to work with so many customers and they get to see all these different use cases. Then there's also just so many actually end users who are using it and they have very peculiar use cases, too, even with a wide set of other people, they're not going to obviously have that, so OpenTelemetry gets to merge all of those different use cases into one, or I guess not into one, but like into a wide set of implementations, but at least it's maintained by a larger group instead of having two separate. And so the first goal was to unify tracing tracing is really far ahead in terms of implementation,, or several implementations of libraries, like Go, Java, Python, Ruby, like on other languages right now but quite a bit of lists there and there's even a collector too which some people might refer to as an agent, depending on what background they have. And so there's a lot of ways to one, implement tracing and also metrics for your services and also gather that data and manipulate it, right? 'Cause for example, tracings so tracing where it's like you can generate a lot of traces, but sometimes missing data and like the collector is a really great place to add data to that, so going back to the state of OpenTelemetry, OpenTelemetry since we just did a beta release, right, we're getting closer to GA. GA is something that we're tracking for at some point this year, no dates yet but it's something that we're really pushing towards, but we're starting to have a very stable API in terms of tracing a metric was on its way, log was all something we're wrapping up on. It is a really great opportunity to, all the different ways that we are that, we even say like service owners, applications, even business rate that we're trying to collect data and have visibility into our applications, this is a really great way to provide one common framework to generate all that data, to gather all that data and generate all that data. So it was really exciting and I don't know, we just want more users and why we say that is to the earlier point is that the more users that we have who are engaged with community, right if you want to open an issue, have a question if you want to set up a PR please do, like we really want more community engagement. It is a great time to do that because we are just starting to get traction, right? Like hopefully, hopefully in a year or two, like we are one of those really big, big projects right up on a CNCF KubeCon and it's like, let's see how much has grown. And it's a great time to join and help influence a project and so many chances for ownership, I know it's really exciting, the company-- >> Excellent well Constance, it's really exciting >> Yeah. >> Congratulations on the progress there, I'm sure everybody's looking forward to as you said GA later this year, want to give you the final word, yourself and Vicky Cheung as the co-chairs for the event, what's your real goal? What do you hope the takeaway is from this instance of the 2020 European show? Of course, virtual now instead of Amsterdam. I guess like two parts one for the takeaway is that it's probably going to be awkward, right? Especially again going back to the community is that we don't have a lot of that in person things so this will be an awkward interaction, but it's a really great place for us to want to assess what a community means to us and how we interact with the community. I'm here with Max Peterson, the Head of Public Sector, Vice President. Max, great to see you in in-person event. >> Great to be here. We're in-person and we're also live streaming. So, we're here, however customers, however partners want to participate. >> I got to say, I'm very impressed with the turnout. The attendance is strong. People excited to be here. We're not wearing our masks cause we're on stage right now, but great turnout. But it's a hybrid event. >> It is. >> You've got engagement here physically, but also digitally as well with theCube and other live streams everywhere. You're putting it everywhere. >> It's been a great event so far. We did a pre-day yesterday. We had great participation, great results. It was about imagining education. And then today, from the executive track to the main tent, to all of the learning, live streaming 'em, doing things in person. Some things just don't translate. So, they'll won't be available, but many things will be available for viewing later as well. So all of the breakout sessions. >> The asynchronous consumption, obviously, the new normal, but I got to say, I was just on a break. I was just walking around. I heard someone, two people talking, just cause I over walk pass them, over hear 'em, "Yeah, we're going to hire this person." That's the kind of hallway conversations that you get. You got the programs, you got people together. It's hard to do that when you're on a virtual events. >> Max: It's hard. The customers that we had up on stage today, the same sort of spontaneity and the same sort of energy that you get from being in-person, it's hard to replicate. Lisa from State of Utah, did a great job and she got an opportunity to thank the team back home who drove so much of the innovation and she did it spontaneously and live. You know, it's a great motivator for everybody. And then Lauren from Air force was phenomenal. And Suchi, our "Imagine Me and You" artist was just dynamite. >> I want to unpack some of that, but I want to just say, it's been a really change of a year for you guys at Public Sector. Obviously, the pandemic has changed the landscape of Public Sector. It's made it almost like Public-Private Sector. It's like, it seems like it's all coming together. Incredible business performance on your end. A lot of change, a lot of great stuff. >> We had customers we talked today with SBA, with VA, with NASA, about how they just embraced the challenge and embraced digital and then drove amazing things out onto AWS. From the VA, we heard that they took tele-health consultations. Get this from 25,000 a month to 45,000 a day using AWS and the Cloud. We heard SBA talk about how they were able to turn around the unemployment benefits programs, you know, for the unemployed, as a result of the traumatic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in a matter of weeks. And then, scaled their systems up just to unbelievable heights as President Biden announced the news. >> You had a lot of announcement. I want to get to a couple of them. One of them was the health equity thing. What is that about? Take us through that announcement. >> So the pandemic, it was hard. It was traumatic in a lot of different ways. It also turned into this little innovation laboratory, but one of the things that it laid bare more than anything else where the inequities associated with some of these systems that had to spring into action. And in particular, in the space of health, healthcare equity. We saw simply communities that didn't have access and weren't included in the same sorts of responses that the rest of the community may have been included in. And so we launched this global initiative today to power health equity solutions. It's a $40 million program. Lasts for three years. And it's open to customers or it's open to partners. Anybody who can contribute to three different areas of health equity. It's people who are leveraging data to build more equal, more sustainable health systems. Is people that are using analytics to do greater study of socioeconomic and social situational conditions that contribute to health inequities. And then finally, it's about building systems that deliver more equitable care to those who are underserved around the world. >> So, just to get this right, 40 million. Is that going to go towards the program for three years and are you going to dolo that out or as funding, or is that just a fund the organization? >> It's actually very similar to the development diagnostic initiative that we ran when COVID hit. We've launched the program. We're welcoming applications from anybody who is participating in those three developmental areas. They'll get Cloud credits. They'll get technical consulting. They may need professional services. They'll get all manner of assistance. And all you have to do is put in an application between now and November 15th for the first year. >> That's for the health equity? >> For the health equity. >> Got it. Okay, cool. So, what's the other news? You guys had some baseline data, got a lot of rave reviews from ACORE. I interviewed Constance and Thompson on the Cube earlier. That's impressive. You guys really making a lot of change. >> Well, you're hundred percent right. Sustainability is a key issue from all of our customers around the world. It's a key issue for us, frankly, as inhabitants of planet earth, right? >> John: Yeah. >> But what's really interesting is we've now got governments around the world who are starting to evaluate whether they're not their vendors have the same values and sustainability. And so that the AWS or the Amazon Climate Pledge is a game changer in terms of going carbon zero by 2040, 10 years ahead of most sort of other programs of record. And then with ACORE, we announced the ability to actually start effecting sustainability in particular parts around the world. This one's aim at that. >> But the key there is that, from what I understand is that, you guys are saying a baseline on the data. So, that's an Amazonian kind of cultural thing, right? Like you got to measure, you can't know what you're doing. >> The world is full of good intentions, but if you want to drive change at scale, you've got to figure out a way to measure the change. And then you've got to set aggressive goals for yourself. >> That's really smart. Congratulations! That's a good move. Real quick on the announcement at re:Invent, you've talked about last re:Invent, you're going to train 29 million people. Where are you on that goal? >> Well, John, we've been making tremendous progress and I'm going to use theCube here to make a small teaser. You know, stay tuned for our re:Invent conference that comes up shortly because we're actually going to be sharing some more information about it. But we've done digital trainings, self-training, online skills workshops. We just took a program called re/Start, which serves an unemployed or underemployed individuals. We launched that around the world and we're really excited. Today, we announced we're bringing it to Latin America too. So we're expanding into Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Brazil, and Argentina. And the amazing thing about that re/Start program, it's a 12 week intensive program. Doesn't require skills in advance. And after 12 weeks, 90% of the people graduating from that course go right onto a job interview. And that's the real goal, not just skills, but getting people in jobs. >> Yeah. The thing about the Cloud. I keep on banging the drum. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, but the level up, you don't need to have a pedigree from some big fancy school. The Cloud, you can be like top tier talent from anywhere. >> And you heard it from some of our speakers today who said they literally helped their teams bootstrap up from old skills like COBOL, you know, to new skills, like Cloud. And I will tell you, you know, right now, Cloud skills are still in a critical shortage. Our customers tell us all the time they can use every single person we can get to 'em. >> I'm going to tell my son, who's a sophomore in CS. I'm like, "Hey, work on COBOL Migration to AWS. You'll be a zillionaire." (John and Max laughs) No one knows what the passwords of the COBOL. I love that 80s jazzy jokes from two re:Invents ago. (John laughs) I got to ask you about the National-Local Governments, how they're monetizing Cloud of the past 18 months. What have you seeing at that level? >> Yeah. National and Local Governments, of course, were tremendously impacted first by the pandemic itself and the health concerns around it, but then all of the secondary effects, you know, unemployment. And immediately, you needed to put into action unemployment benefits systems. We work with the U.S. Small Business Administration, 15 other States across the U.S. You know, to have those systems in place in like weeks to be able to serve the unemployed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then you saw things progress, to the point where we had States across the country, standing up call centers on Amazon Connect. Instantly, they could have a high scalable volume call center that was situated for their instantly remote workforce, as opposed to their old call center technology. So, across the U.S. we saw those. And in fact, around the world, as governments mobilized to be able to respond to citizens. But the final thing that I think is really incredible, is though is the way that the AWS teams and partners sprung into action to work with National Governments around the world. Over 26 National Governments run their vaccine management scheduling systems on AWS. The largest to date, being in India, where in a single day, the vaccine management system scheduled and conducted 22.5 million vaccinations. Which is more than the population of New York State in one week and one day. >> Wow. That's good. That's great progress. I got to say, I mean, that kind of impact is interesting. And we had Shannon Kellogg on earlier, talking about the Virginia impact with the Amazon $220 million being spread over a few Counties just in one year. The partnership between business... and governments with the Cloud, so much more agility. This really strikes at the core of the future of government. >> Max: I think so. People have talked about private-public partnerships for a long time. I'm really proud of some of the work that Amazon and the whole team is doing around the world in those types of public private partnerships. Whether they're in skilling and workforce with partnerships, like eight different States across the U.S. to deliver skills, training through community college based systems. Whether it's with healthcare systems. Like NHS or GEL over in the UK, to really start applying cloud-scale analytics and research to solve the problems that eventually you're going to get us to personalized healthcare. >> That's a great stuff. Cloud benefits are always good. I always say the old joke is, "You hang around the barbershop long enough, you'll get a haircut." And if you get in the Cloud, you can take advantage of the wave. If you don't get on the wave, your driftwood. >> And States found that out, in fact. You'd have customers who were well on their journey. They were really able to turn on a dime. They pivoted quickly. They delivered new mission systems with customers. Those who hadn't quite progressed to the same state, they found out their legacy. IT systems were just brittle and incapable of pivoting so quickly to the new needs. And what we found, John, was that almost overnight, a business, government, which was largely in-person and pretty high touch had to pivot to the point where their only interaction was now a digital system. And those who- >> John: Middle of the day, they could have race car on the track, like quickly. >> Well, we've got it. We do have race cars on the track, right? Every year we've got the artificial intelligence powered Amazon DeepRacer and Red River on the track. >> I can see it. Always a good showing. Final question. I know you got to go on and I appreciate you coming on- >> It's been great. >> with all your busy schedule. Looking ahead. What tech trends should we be watching as Public Sector continues to be powered by this massive structural change? >> Well, I think there's going to be huge opportunity in healthcare. In fact, this afternoon at four o'clock Eastern, we're talking with Dr. Shafiq Rab from Wellforce. He and folks at Veterans Affairs to tell you telehealth and telemedicine are two, the areas where there's still the greatest potential. The number of people who now are serviced, and the ability to service a population far more broadly dispersed, I think has dramatic potential in terms of simply making the planet more healthy. >> Like you said, the pandemics have exposed the right path and the wrong path. And agility, speed, new ways of doing things, telemedicine. Another example, I interviewed a great company that's doing a full stack around healthcare with all kinds of home, agents, virtual agents, really interesting stuff. >> It is. It's virtual this year, though, theCUBE is virtual. This is theCUBE virtual I'm John Furrier your host. This is the segment where we kind of pre tease out the show for this year. We do a CUBE review and analyze and talk about some of the things we're expecting trends in the marketplace. And I'm pleased to announce a new CUBE co-host with me, Ali Amagasu, who's been part of theCUBE community since 2013, going back to the OpenStack days, which is now different name, but it's private clouds making a come back. But she's part of the cloud community, the cloud Harati, as we say, Ali, welcome to being a CUBE host. >> Thank you so much, John. It's a pleasure, it's been a while since we've hung out, but I do remember pestering you back in those days, and I've certainly stayed with theCUBE ever since then. I mean, you guys are an institution to put it. >> It's been so much fun, I have to say I had less gray hair. I didn't have glasses, I wear contacts. Now I have progressive vision, so I can't wear the contacts. They're hard for me, but it's been such a great evolution. And one of the things that's been really important to our mission has been to be kind of like an upstream project to be kind of open and be part of the community to be on the ground floor. We can't be there this year 'cause of the pandemic, but it's been great and about a few years ago, Stu Miniman and I were seeing that we had a great community of people who wanted a co-host, and we got a great community host model. And thanks for coming on and being part of this mission, it's been important to our mission. We've got Lisa Martin, Rebecca Knight, John Troyer, Keith Townson, Justin Warren, Corey Quinn, to name a few. So welcome to the crew, thanks for coming on. >> Sure I'm happy to step in. >> So I want to go back in time. I mean, when we first met in 2013, you were a part of Metacloud, which got acquired by Cisco at that time, OpenStack was hot, OpenStack was at the cloud. And if you think about where Amazon was at that point and time, it was really the beginning of that sea change of rapid cloud scale, public cloud, specifically OpenStack kind of settled in, and that's kind of making a nice foundation for private cloud right now. It's still out there, telco clouds. You're seeing that trend, but this is the sixth Kubecon we've been there at all of them. We were there at the founding president creation. What an interesting turn of events. The world is kind of spun in the direction of all the conversations we were having back in 2013, 14, 15, 16. Now fast forward Kubernetes is the hottest thing on the planet and cloud native is the construct for all these modern apps, so what's your take on it. What's your view on this? 'Cause you've been riding this wave. >> Well, I think it's interesting. You brought up OpenStack because I remember in those days, OpenStack was smoking hot. And I remember talking to some of the organizers from the foundation, what they said was we want OpenStack to be boring. We want it to be part of the background. We will know we've made it when it's boring. And we could argue that they're there now, right? They aren't what we're talking about as much, but they're still there, they're still doing their thing. They're still growing as far as I know. So that's happened and now Kubernetes is the incredible hotness and it's just exploded. And so it turned from, you know, just a few projects, to now, if you look at the list of projects that are in incubation list of projects that have graduated, it's pretty long, and it's an impressive set of capabilities, when you look. >> It's been really interesting, you know, Dan Collin who's, the Ben was the director of the CNCF. I remember talking to him early on. And when he came, when he joined, he was, he hustled hard. He was smart. And he had a vision to balance the growing ecosystem cause he's done successful startups. So he kind of kind of knows the rocket ship labor, but he basically brought that entrepreneurial startup mentality. And I saw him in China when I was there with Intel with Alibaba conference in the lobby of the hotel, I'm like, dad, what are you doing here? So the CNC, I was already thinking global. They build out the most impressive landscape of vendors to participate in cloud nativecon and Kubecon At the same time, they maintain that end user focused. If you look at Envoy, right, it came from Lyft. So you have this really nice balance. And you know, it was always people chirping and complaining about this, that, and the other thing on the vendor's side. But the end user focus has been such a strong hand for Kubecon and the CNCF. It's just been really impressive and they maintain that. And this is the key. >> And I think what's impressive is that they've evolved. They've continued, they haven't sat there and said, "We've got a couple of fantastic projects," right? They're bringing in new ones all the time. They're staying at the cutting edge. They're looking at serverless and making sure there's projects that are taking care of that. And so I think that's, what's keeping it relevant, is the fact that they're relentlessly evolving. >> Yeah, and we comment, I think two years ago, Stu and I were pontificating about, can they maintain it? And one of the things that we were predicting, I want to get your reaction to this is that as Kubernetes becomes more standard and you're starting to see the tipping point now where it's beyond just testing and deploying in some clusters, you're starting to see Kubernetes native and in part of everything, in part of the future as service meshes and wrap around it and other things, the commercialization, the success of the vendor side is starting to be there. You starting to see real viable companies be started. So do they become end-users or so? So the question was, can it maintain its open source vibe while you have all this commercialization going on? Because that's always the challenge in open source. How do you balance it? What's your reaction to that threat or maybe an opportunity? >> I don't think it's a threat. I think there will always be folks who want to do it themselves. They want to use the vanilla upstream, Kubernetes. They want to build it. They don't want any vendor interference. There's also a very other solid other camp that says, "No, no, we don't want to deal with the updates ourselves. We don't want to deal with the integration with networking and security and all those things." And the vendor takes care of that. So I really think it's just serving two different audiences that as far as I can tell are changing, they're not, I don't see one side growing and one side shrinking. I really see it staying same, pretty stable. And so it's serving both teams. >> Yeah, I totally agree. And this is what's great about evolution. And when you talk about the community gets about the people involved. And I was riffing with someone the other day and were like, "Hey, you know what makes CNCF different?" And we were saying that everyone kind of knows each other. So as you have, you know, the most popular thing at Kubecon is the hallway tracks, right? So hallway tracks are always popular. And just being in the hallways, we call it lobby con and the CUBES on the floor there. So there's a lot of hallway conversations as hallway tracks, there's lightening talks, there's always something exciting, but even though people might move around from company to company for project to project, everyone kind of knows each other. So I think that kind of gives this kind of self governance piece, some legs. >> It does, and you're bringing up something that's really relevant right now 'cause it's virtual this year, right? So we don't get to have those hallway conversations. We don't get to have those, you know, accidental, you know, connections that means so much. I think they did an amazing job, amazing with the European version of Kubecon and you know, they're doing the best they can, I think the attend, I heard the attendance was great. The sessions were incredible from an efficiency standpoint. If you're an attendee, you could hit so many more sessions from home. There was so much to learn, the content was fabulous. The one thing that's missing, and I don't know how they replicate it is that ability to connect with your colleagues in the hallway, the folks you haven't seen'cause they, they moved on, they went to a different company. Maybe they'd been to two or three companies since you saw them last and the one place, you know, you're going to see them is at Kubecon or some of the other conferences you attend. >> Yeah and talking to Priyanka. And some of the co-chairs one of the things that was interesting out of that last conference was you had the virtual theater, but the Slack channel was very engaging. So you had people leaning in on the dialogue and it's interesting. And this is where I want to ask you your thoughts on the top conversations as we prepare. And we start doing the remote interviews, with the leaders of the CNCF, as well as the top end users, as well as vendors and companies, people want to know what's the top conversation that's happening and what are we looking for? So I want to ask you, what are you looking for, Ali? What are the things that you're trying to squint through? What smoke signals you're looking for? What's the trends that you're trying to tease out a coupon this year? >> I'm going to be really interested. You know, I already mentioned it once, but I'm going to be interested to hear how the new serverless projects are going. I know there are a couple in incubation that sounds really interesting. Priyanka brought them up when I've spoken with her. And so I'd love to see if those are getting so traction. What does the momentum around those look like? Is there as much excitement service meshes there was last year. I know there was a lot of discussion about what was happening with search. Most people were really excited. So I want to know what's happening with that. I want to know how new users to the community are dealing with the proliferation of projects. You know, how are they finding out ways to get involved? How are we nurturing new members to the CNCF community and making sure that they aren't overwhelmed, that they find their niche and they're able to contribute to become users, to do whatever their role is meant to be. I think those are the interesting things to me. How about you? >> That's a good question. I mean, I've, there's so many things. I mean, I look at the first of all, the open source projects are phenomenal. And again, talking about the people, I love to see the things that are maturing and getting promoted and what's kind of in sandbox, but I look at the, some of the ecosystem landscape maps with the vendors. And if you look at Amazon, Cisco and the HPE, IBM cloud, red hat, VMware to name a few, and you've got some other companies like Convolt for instance, which is pivoting to a cloud service, Microsoft Palo Alto networks for security Rancho was acquired., you know, a lot of companies are, I think at capital one out there, always in great end. You always great stuff. You got interesting and in Docker, for example, cup Docker containers, we did Docker con this year and I was blown away by the demand, the interest and just the openness of DAPA as they re-pivoted back to their roots. But I'm interested to see how the big cloud vendors are going to play because Google has always been an impressive and dominant partner in KubeCon, Amazon then joined, Azure is in there as well. So you've got those three, the big three in there. So the question is, okay, as this ecosystem is growing, I'm trying to tease out what is this, everything as a service, because one of the things that's coming out on the customer side, if you work backwards from the customer, they're getting kind of the missions from the CEOs and the CIO or CSO saying, "Take everything as a service," which is kind of like, I call it the ivory tower kind of marching orders. And then it gets handed down to the cloud architects and the developers and they go, "What's that? How's that, how does it's kind of hard?" It's not easy, right? So the modern apps is one and then this, everything as a service business model is going to be based upon cloud native. So I think the cloud native, this is the year that cloud native is going to start showing some signs and some visibility into what the metrics are going to be for success around the key projects. And then who can deliver at scale, do everything is a service. So, you know, understanding what that means, what does Kubernetes enable? What are some of the new things? So to me, I'm trying to tease that out because I think that's the next big wave. Everything is a service. And then what that means technically, how do you achieve it? Because when you start rolling out, it's like, okay, what's next? >> Yeah, I wonder who are going to be the new super users that emerged from this, you know, who are going to be the companies that maybe didn't adopt early, they're getting in now and they start running with it and they do incredible new things with it. And the truth is going to your earlier point about whether or not commercializing that, you know, should it be an upstream thing where you're using it vanilla using, you know, pure Kubernetes or using a vendor version? The truth is when you start getting vendors involved and getting super users involved, and these big companies, they can throw 10, 20 people at projects as contributors. You know, I tend to think of open source as being a bunch of small companies, but the truth is it's a lot harder for a small company to dedicate multiple head count to full-time contributions, right? Well big company, you could throw a couple dozen at them and not even blink. And so that's, it's critical to the survival truthfully of the community that we have, these big companies get in there and run with it. >> You know, I was talking to Constance and Steven Augustus, they're both co-chairs of the event and Steven brought up something. That's interesting because it's the theme that's kind of talked about, but no one likes to talk about it because it's kind of important and ugly at the same time. It's security and I think one of the things that I'm looking for this year, Ali is, you know, there's a buzz word out there has been kind of overused, but it's still kind of relevant and it's called shift left. So shift left means how do you build security into the CICB pipeline? So developers don't have to come back and do stuff, right? So it's like baking security in. This is going to be kind of a nuance point because of course everyone wants security, but that's not what application developers think about every day, right? It's like, they're not like security people, right? So, but they got to have security. So I think whoever can crack the code on making security brain dead easy will be great. And how that works together with across multiple vendors. So to me, that's something that I want to understand more. I don't yet have a formed opinion on it, but certainly we're hearing "Shift left" a lot. >> Yes I agree 100% at first we had developers and operators. Then we had devOps. Now I hear sec devOps all the time. You know, that I started hearing that last year and now these poor developers, you know, suddenly they are, whether they want to be, or not, to some degree, they are responsible for their company security, because if they aren't integrating best practices into their code, then they are introducing vulnerabilities. And so it it's just fallen upon them, whether they signed up for it or not, it's fallen upon them. And it'll be real interesting to see how that plays out. >> Well, one of the things I'd love to do is get me, you John, Troy, Keith Townsend, Justin Warren, and certainly Corey Quinn on a podcast or CUBE interview because man, we would have some war stories and have some real good stories to tell the evolution of what's real. And what's not real. Certainly Cory queen allows to talk about kind of like squinting through the hype and calling out kind of what's real, but this is kind of really kind of what's going on with coop comes a lot of exciting things. So I have to ask you over the years within CNCF and cloud nativecon and Kubecon, what are some of your favorite memories or moments that you can share could be personal, could be professional, could be code, could be accompany. What's some of the things that you can share about some, some happy moments for Kubecon >> Sure, sure, I'd say for me, some of the best moments have been the recent pivot toward trying to take care of the attendees. You know, I don't remember if it was San Diego. I think it was San Diego where they brought in all the puppies or mental wellness. And there was a meditation room. I don't know if you went in there, but it was quiet. And there was just some very soft lighting and some quiet music. And I didn't know how much traction that was going to get amongst attendees, that room was packed every time I went in there, dead quiet people relaxing, the puppies were bananas. People were just hoarding around the puppies and wanting to pet them. And I just really liked the way that they had really thought of a bunch of different angles to try to make sure that people who have left their families, they've come to a different place. They're, they're, they're under stress. 'Cause they're probably traveling with their boss and a bunch of their colleagues and they're stressed. And so to make sure that they had a break, I thought that was really somewhere where KubeCon was ahead of a lot of the other conferences I see. And it wasn't a single approach. It wasn't, we're going to throw a bunch of dogs in the hallway. It was, we're going to do that. We're going to have a therapist do a session. We're going to have puzzles in a quiet area at the hallway. It really went all in. And so for me, that was one of my favorite things from recent years. I thought that was fantastic. How about you? >> It's been fun. I mean, it's just so many moments. I mean, I love the European show. We did one year when I first, first time they had rolled out in Europe and I thought that was just so small and intimate. Of course the big mega shows have been great with activity. I think, but one of my favorite moments was I was wandering in the lobby. This was in Europe. It was, and it was a huge EU event, I think 2018 might've been, and I'm kind of buzzing around the lobby and I had nothing to do that night. And it was like five to 11 different parties to go to. People have, you know, dinners. And I ran into one of the CNCF co-hosts and also she's a Google engineer and I'm like, "Hey, what are you guys doing?" I'm like, she's like, "Oh, we're going to the women's happy hour." And I'm like, "Oh, that's cool." I'm like, "It sounds good." And she invited me and I went with her and I was the only guy there, okay. >> Oh lucky you. >> And I looked around and it was packed. And I said to myself, this is freaking amazing. And it was great women, great leaders, smart, super awesome. And they were all welcomed me. I wasn't like being stared at either, by the way. So I'm like, okay, there was no line for the men's room either by the way, just to, you know, and I was like, good tweet there. But I felt really welcomed. And I thought that was very cool. It was packed. And I went back until it's too much. Do you can't believe it was just really awesome. I was in this awesome happy hour. And I remember saying to myself, "This community is inclusive, they're awesome. And it was just one of just a great moment. >> It's great you've got to be the other side of that, right? Because as a woman, I am always on the standard side of it, which has guys everywhere, there's very few women, but here's the thing I have never felt intimidated or uncomfortable in any way at a Kubecon I've always felt welcomed, I've had fabulous interactions. I've met people from around the world. And I try to explain to my kids actually, when we talk and they they'll say something sometime not xenophobic, maybe that's an overstatement, but they're little kids. They don't have a great understanding of the world. And I'll say, "Wait till you grow up and you go to one of these conferences, you'll realize that people from countries that even fear that some of them there's some of the kindest, nicest, most polite people I have ever met. And you walk away really feeling like you want to just throw your arms around everyone, that's been my experience anyway. S0 maybe I've been lucky, but I haven't had that intimidation factor at all. >> You got it, you've got a great mindset and your kids are lucky. And I feel like for me, the moment was the community is very open and inclusive. And I think theCUBE when we interview people, we want people who are smart, you know, and we interview a lot of great women and at KubeCon, it's been fantastic, so that's the highlight. And of course the grueling hours, and then, you know, people like to drink beer in this community. And I like beer, although I'd been trimming down a little bit because, you know, IPA's have been kind of getting heavy on me, but good beer drinkers. They like to have fun and they also work hard and it's a great community, so. >> And now you have to bring your own beer. Now that it's virtual, you have to keep your own IPA. >> Well, the joke was virtual is that we can have a better lunch at home. 'Cause that's always kind of like the event thing. But I think virtuals, I miss the face to face, but we get to talk to more people with remote and they get more traffic on the site, but hopefully when it comes back, it'll be hybrid and we'll still be kind of doing more remote, but more face-to-face. >> So well, and it's more affordable. I did not look at what the pricing is this time, but I know for the European version, the pricing was very fair, certainly more affordable than going in real life. And, you know, for some folks who really can't swing that travel costs and the registration fee, it's a great opportunity to get in on the cheap and suck up a lot of knowledge really quickly. >> Well, Ali, thank you for riffing on Kubecon preview. Live here in Seattle for KubeCon CloudNativeCon 2018, with theCUBE's coverage I'm John Furrier for Stu Miniman. We've been there from the beginning watching this community grow into a powerhouse. Almost a Moore's Law like growth, doubling every, actually six months, if you think about it. >> Yeah it's pretty wild. >> Chris Aniszczyk, CTO and COO of the CNCF, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, great to see you again. Thanks for coming on. >> Super stoked to be here. Thank you for being with us since the beginning. >> So it's been fun to watch you guys, CNCF has done an exceptional job, I thought, a fabulous job of how you guys have built out a great community, open-source community as the main persona target, but brought in the vendor on terms that really work for open-source, Linux foundation, great shepherding this thing through, now you have, basically, looks like a conference. >> Yeah. >> End user conference, vendors are here, still open-source is pure. The growth has been phenomenal. Just take a minute to give us the update on just some of the stats, massive growth. >> Yeah, sure. I mean you know, we're 8,000 people here today, which is absolutely wild. What's actually crazy is when we planned this event, it was about two years ago when we had to start booking a venue, figuring out how many people may be here. And two years ago we thought 5,000 would have been a fantastic number. Well, we got to 8,000. We have about 1500 to 2,000 people on the wait list that could not get in. So, obviously we did not plan properly but sometimes it's hard to predict kind of the uptake of technology these days. Things just move quickly. I think we've kind of benefited from the turnaround that's happening in the industry right now where companies are finally looking to modernize their infrastructure. Whether it's moving to the cloud or just modernizing things, and that's happening everywhere, from traditional enterprises to internet scale companies. Everyone's looking to kind of modernize things and we're kind of at the forefront of that. >> I mean the challenge of events is, some of it is provisioning, over provision. You don't show up, you want elastic, dynamic, agile-- >> I want the Cloud Native events. >> Programmable space that could just go auto scale when you need it. >> Exactly. >> All kidding aside, congratulations on the success. But one thing we've been covering on SiliconANGLE and theCUBE, and you guys have been actually executing on, is the growth in China in open-source. And it's been around for a while but just the scale, just pure numbers, tell them about the success in China and the impact to the open-source community and business. >> Yeah. We put on our first event in Shanghai, KubeCon China. It was fantastic. We sold out at 2500 people. Always a little bit difficult to do your first event in China. I have many stories to share on that one, but the amount of scale, in terms of software deployment there are just fascinating. You kind of have these companies like ofo, is like a bike sharing system right. You know in China they have hundreds of millions of these bicycles that they have to kind of manage in an infrastructural way. The software that you use to actually do that has to be built very well. And so the trend that we're actually seeing in CNCF now is about 10%, we have three projects that were born in China, dealing with China-scale problems. So one of those projects is TiKV, which is kind of a very well fine-tuned built distributed key value store that is used by a lot of the Chinese com providers and folks like ofo and LME out there that are just dealing with hundreds of millions of users. It's fascinating. I think the trend you're going to see in the future is there's going to be more technology that is kind of born dealing with China-scale issues, and having those lessons being shared with the rest of the world and collaborate. One of the goals in CNCF for us is to help bridge these communities. In China about 25% of our attendance was international, which was higher then we expected. But we had dual live simultaneous translation for everyone, to kind of try to bridge these... >> It's a big story. The consumption and the contribution side is just phenomenal. >> China is our number two contributor to all CNCF projects, it's very impressive in my opinion. >> So Chris there was a lot in the keynote. I wondered, give us a little insight, it's different for a foundation in open-source communities than it is for company when you talk about the core product being Kubernetes and then all these other projects, you've got the incubating projects, the ones that have been elevated, new FCD comes into it, how do you do the juggling act of this? >> Honestly, the whole goal of the foundation is basically to cultivate and sustain, and kind of grow projects that come in. Some are going to work and be very successful, some may never leave the sandbox, which is our early stage. So today I was very excited to finally have etcd come as an official incubating project. This is our 31st project, which is a little bit wild, since we started, it was just Kubernetes. We had other projects that moved from, say, sandbox to incubating. So in China, one of our big announcements was Harbor, which is a container registry, or actually, technically, we call it a Cloud Native Registry, because it does support things like helm charts, it doesn't only host container-based artifacts. It moved up to the incubating level and that is being embedded. It's in all of Cloud Foundry's and Pivotal's products. It's used by some cloud providers in China as their kind of registry as a service. Like their equivalent to ECR or GCR, essentially. And we've just seen incredible growth across all of our projects. I mean, we have three graduated projects. Envoy recently, which you saw Matt, Constance, and Jose on stage a little bit to talk about. To me, what I really like about Envoy and Prometheus, these are two projects that were not born from a vendor. You know. Envoy came from Lyft because they were just like, you know what? We're not happy with our current kind of reverse proxy, service proxy situation, let's build our own open-source and kind of share our lessons. Prometheus, born from SoundCloud. So I think CNCF has a good mix of, hey, we have some initial vendor-driven projects, like Kubernetes came from Google but now it's used by a ton of people. But then you have other projects that were born from the end-user community. I think having that healthy mix is good for everyone. >> I think the DNA of that early on in the culture has been a successful one for you guys. Not being vendor-led, being end-user led, but vendors can come in and participate. >> Yeah, absolutely. >> So talk about the end-user perspective because we're very interested, a lot of people are interested in end-user. What are they doing with it? It used to be a joke. I stood up a bunch Hadoop but what are you using it for? What are people using Kubernetes for? You've got Apple, Uber, Capital One, Comcast, GoDaddy, Airbnb. They're all investing in Kubernetes as their main stack. >> And CNCF projects, not only Kubernetes. >> But what does that mean when they say Kubernetes as a stack? It's kind of been encapsulated to include other things. People are looking at this as a real alternative. Can you explain what that is about? >> So, I think people have to realize that CNCF is essentially more than just Kubernetes. Cloud Native is more than just Kubernetes. So what we'll see is, take a company like Lyft. Lyft did not start using Kubernetes, they are kind of on that migration path now but Lyft started to use Envoy, Prometheus, gRPC, other technologies that kind of lead them to that Cloud Native journey that eventually they're like, you know what? Maybe we don't need our homegrown orchestrator. We'll go use that. And use, (huffs) Everyone falls in differently in kind of a community. Some people start with Kubernetes and eventually subsume the other kind of ancillary projects. >> This is what the project cloud is about. Let me rephrase the question. So when people say, because this is a real trend we've been reporting on this, the CNCF stack, people have language semantics on how that's couched. Oh, on the Kubernetes-- >> I don't like stack because it means there's one proscribed solution, where I think it's more like an a la carte model. >> Well if I quote the CNCF stack, if there was a word for it, as an alternative, as a solution base with Kubernetes at the core of it, right. Okay, cool. What is that usage being looked like? How is that developing? How are end users looking at the CNCF holistically with Kubernetes at the core? >> So we have one of the largest end-user communities out there of any open-source foundation. We have about 80 members. When we talk to them directly, why are they adopting CNCF projects and technology? Most of the time is they want to deploy software faster, right? They want to use modern CICD tools and just development patterns. So it's all about faster time to market and making the developers lives easier so they're actually able to deliver business customer value. And it's basically similar to a whole DevOps mantra, right. If I could ship software faster and it's easier for my developers to get stuff done, I'm delivering value to whatever my end-user customer is at the end of the day. If you go to the CNCF end-user website, we have case studies from Nordstrom, Capital One, I think Lyft is there. Just a bunch of people that, we moved to these technologies because it improved the way we could monitor software, how fast we could ship. It's all about faster time to market, and modernizing their infrastructure. >> Chris, give us a little bit of a view coming forward. We're on 1.13 for Kubernetes, if I read it right. The contribution slowed down a little bit because we're actually reaching a level of maturity. >> Kubernetes is boring and mature. >> What do you see as we come, other than continued growth? >> So I think the wider ecosystem is going to continue to grow. So if you actually look at Kubernetes directly, it has been very focused on moving things out of the core as much as possible and trying to force people to extend things. I don't know if you saw, Tim Hockin had this great talk in terms of how all the Kubernetes components are either being ripped out or turned into custom resource definition of CODs. Basically trying to make Kubernetes as extensible as possible. Instead of trying to ram things into Kubernetes, hey, use the built in extensibility layer. >> Decompose a little bit. >> Decompose and the analogy here would be like kernel space versus user space if you're going to Linux. All the exciting things tend to happen in user space these days but, yeah, the kernel is still important, actively contributed to by a ton of people, very critical, everything. But a lot of the action happens in user space. And I think you'll see the same thing with Kubernetes, where it will kind of become like Linux where the kernel of Kubernetes, very stable, mature, focused on basically not breaking and trying to keep it as simple as possible and built good extensibility mechanisms so folks could plug in whatever systems. We saw this with storage in Kubernetes. A lot of the initial storage drivers, flex volume stuff, was baked into the Kubernetes with a new effort called the container storage interface. They all pulled that out and made they basically built an extensibility mechanism so any company or any project could bring in their storage solution. >> One of the key trends we're seeing, obviously, in cloud is automation. We see serverless around the corner, you see all these things going on around the cool things you guys are building. As automation continues to move down the track, where is that going to impact and create value for customer end-users as they roll with the CNCF? So Kubernetes at some point could be auto, why even be managing clusters? Well, that should be automated at some point. >> I mean, hey, you could do it both ways. A lot of people love the managed service approach. If I could pay a large hyper-scale cloud provider to manage everything, the more the merrier. Some want the freedom to roll their own. Some may want to pay a vendor, I don't know, Red Hat OpenShift looks great, let's pay them to help manage data. Or I just roll alone. And we've seen it all. You know it really depends on the organization. We've seen some very high end banks or financial institutions that have very good technical chops. They're okay rolling on their own. Some may not be as interested in that and just pay a vendor to manage it. >> It's a choice issue. >> For us it's all goodness, whatever you prefer. I think longer term we'll see more people, just for the convenience of managed services, go that route. But for CNCF Kubernetes there's multiple ways to do it; you could go Vanilla, you could go Managed Service, you could go through a vendor like Rancher or OpenShift. The cool thing about all these things is they all are conformant to the Kubernetes certified program, so it means there's no breakage or forking, everyone is compliant. >> So for the people that are watching that couldn't make it here or are on the waiting list, or doing LobbyCon. >> I'm sorry, I'm sorry for the waiting list. >> This is actually a good venue to do LobbyCon, there's places to meet here. I know a lot of people actually in town kind of LobbyCon-ing it. But for the people that aren't here, what's the most important story that's being told? I know we're not being talked about. What is happening here? What should people know about this year? In your mind's eye, in your understanding of the program, and how it's developed early on, what's the most important thing? >> I think in general CNCF, Cloud Native, Kubernetes all have matured a lot in the last three years, especially the last 12-18 months, where you've seen... Earlier it was all about technical-savvy folks scratching their itch. Now the end-users that I'm talking to, you have like Maersk, what does Maersk do? They actually ship containers, right? But now they are using Kubernetes to manage containers on the containers. >> They're in the container business. >> I'm seeing traditional insurance companies. So I think what we're doing is we're basically hitting, we're kind of past that threshold of early adopters and tinkerers, and now we're moving to full-blown mainstream adoption. Part of that is the cloud providers are all offering Managed Kubernetes, so it's convenient for companies that move in the cloud. And then on the distro front, OpenShift, PKS, Rancher, they're all mature products. So there's just a lot of stability and maturity in the ecosystem. >> Just talking about the mature stuff, give us your take on Knative. What should people be looking at that? How does Serverless fit into all this? >> So Serverless, you know we love Serverless in CNCF. We just view it as another kind of programing model that eventually runs on some type of containerized stack. For us at CNCF, we have a Serverless working group that's been putting out whitepapers. We have a spec around cloud events standardized. I think Knative is a fantastic approach of how to basically build a, kind of like CNCF where it's a set of components that you can use to build your own serverless framework. I think the adoption has been great. We've actually been talking to them about potentially bringing in some components of Knative into CNCF. I think, if you want to provide your own serverless offering, you're going to need the components in Knative to make that happen. I've seen SAPs picked up on it. GitLab just announced a serverless offering based on Knative today. I think it's a great technology. It's still very early days. I think serverless is great and will be continually used, but it's one option of many. We're going to have containers, we're going to have serverless, we're going to have mainframes. It's going to be a mix of everything. >> I'm old enough to remember the old client server days when multi-vendor was a big buzz word. Multi-cloud now is a subtext here. I think that one of the big stories in issue of the maturity is that you're starting to see people, I want choice. And hybrid-cloud is the word today but I think ultimately people view it as a multi-cloud environment of resource. >> So one interesting thing about KubeCon, I think one of our reasons that we've grown so much is if you look at it, there's really no other event you can go to that is truly multi-cloud. You have all the HyperScale folks, you've got your end-users and vendors in one area, right? Versus you going to a vendor-specific event. So I think that's kind of been part of our benefit and then luck to kind of stumble in this where everyone is in the same room. I think next year, big push on bringing all the clouds. >> Well, Chris, thanks for spending the time. I know you're super busy. CTO and COO of the CNCF, really making things happen. This is a real, important technology wave, the cloud computing, and having the kind of choices in ecosystem around open-source is making it happen. Congratulations to your success. I'm your host, Rebecca Knight. We're joined by Maureen Fan. She is the CEO and co-founder of Baobab Studio, which is the industry's leading VR animation studio, so, welcome Maureen. >> Thank you so much for having me. >> It's excited to talk to you, because you just won an Emmy. Congratulations. >> Thank you. >> You just won an Emmy for "Invasion", so, tell us a little bit about invasion. >> It was our first piece ever and it was just an experiment to see if we could even create VR and it's a story about these adorable little bunnies and you are actually a bunny too, you look down, you have a furry, little bunny body and these aliens that come to try to take over the Earth, with their advanced technology and you and your bunny friend end up saving the entire Earth and it's starring Ethan Hawk and it just came out last year. And we're really excited, because it became the number one top downloaded VR experience across all the headsets and it's getting turned into a Hollywood Feature Film. >> Very cool, very cool >> Thank you. >> And you have another film coming out too and this is "Rainbow Crow" >> Yes. >> Tell our viewers a little bit about "Rainbow". >> So, "Rainbow Crow" is based off of a Native American legend about how the crow used to have beautiful rainbow feathers and a beautiful singing voice and it's John Legend, in our piece and how he decides to sacrifice himself, by flying into the sun to bring warmth and fire back to the Earth and in the process, loses all his beautiful feathers, becomes black and burnt and his voice becomes like the crow's voice, but it's about how beauty is within and there's also, huge themes about diversity and how if you learn to accept yourself and your differences, that's when you can accept others and that's why we specifically cast minorities and women, so, we have John Legend, Constance Wu, from "Fresh off the Boat" as a skunk character, Diego Luna, from "Rogue One", for the moth character, as well as Randy Edmunds, as a Native American elder, narrator, and we have a whole bunch of other stars to announce, soon-- >> Well we cannot wait to hear. That's already an amazing line-up. >> Thank you. >> So, when you're thinking about "Rainbow Crow" and particularly, because it's VR, which is relatively new, still experimental, I mean, the messages of diversity, does it lend itself to VR, better than, say, a standard animation film? >> Absolutely, because if you think about stories that you just watch passively, the reason why we need stories and humanity, in general is to experience characters and stories beyond those we can experience in our real lives and we think, "Oh, how would I feel if I was in the "position of that character or what would I do?" but in VR, because you are actually playing a character in a role, you actually have to decide at that point, "what would I do?" so, it's not just a experience that I just see, it's one where I'm actively experiencing it, so, I create a memory and remember afterwards and there's all these research studies at Stanford by Jeremy Bailenson, who is head of the Stanford VR lab, that shows if you are made a homeless person, inside a VR experience and you have to go through a day in the life of a homeless person or you would look in the mirror and see that you are a black woman, that you, when you get out of the headset, you act completely differently. You have so much more empathy for these people than you would normally and so, it gets you to care about these characters, in a way that you don't normally and in VR, because you're doing it in a real-time game engine, these characters can act and react to what you do, so you can turn that empathy into action and actually act upon your caring, which we call compassion, so, it really changes you in a way, that normal, traditional story-telling doesn't, so, I think that having voices and characters that are different, in front of the screen, and also, behind the screen are really important to create role models and different perspectives for all the people out in the world. >> And these are movies that are targeted at kids, children, but do you see a future in which, where there is more targeted at adults, for VR? >> Absolutely. The funny thing is, in the beginning, the VR distributors didn't think that people would want our VR animation, because they're like, "Oh, it's just going to be these hardcore boys "that just love to play games. "Are they going to want this animation?" and VR is targeted towards adults, that's why they were surprised and we were surprised when "Invasion" became the number one downloaded VR experience. It shows that the audience for our content is from little kids to grandmas and everyone in between and that's probably why it became the top downloaded experience, is because it's universally appealing and has themes that are appealing to just, every single generation, so, absolutely, but for VR to become mainstream, there needs to be more universally appealing content. Right now, the content tends to be for games, like parkour games, as well as documentaries, which are two amazing pieces of content for this medium, but for it to become mainstream, we need more universally appealing content and I'm excited about, right now, it's a new industry. This is when minorities and women in particular, can enter the space and help shape the voices and the direction of the industry. >> That is exactly where I wanted to go next. So, let's talk a little bit about Baobab Studio. It's not that old and VR is not that old and so, why are there more opportunities, would you say, for women, and minorities? >> Well, if you look at traditional animation in the traditional entertainment fields that's a very mature industry and to break into that industry, you have to either have lots and lots of money or unfair distribution advantage, but VR, there's technological disruption, which means nobody has an advantage at all, means it's a level playing field and everybody can come in and start something, so, this is a perfect opportunity, when there's low barriers to entry of coming in, for women and minorities, anyone who wants their voice heard, to start companies or to make experiences and we can set the groundwork, because there's no one telling us what we can and can't do, because no one actually knows what we can and can't do yet. >> Right, right, but yet you are still of a female, asian figurehead of a studio, that will hopefully, someday be a major studio. You're working on it, but do you find that people take you as seriously in Hollywood? I mean, what are you coming up against? >> Well, it's really interesting, because I heard for even fundraising is one of the hardest parts of starting a company and there was a Stanford Research Study that showed that if you took a deck, a pitch deck for a company and you had a male voice-over versus a female voice-over the male voice-over was, I don't remember what, it was like 50% more likely to get funded than the woman with the same exact pitch deck, so I knew from that and they also show that if you are married and wear a ring you're taken more seriously, or if you're less attractive, also, you're taken more seriously and my hypothesis and some of the hypotheses out there, is it takes away the whole entire female attraction thing, like what does it mean to be an attractive female, so, I had to go into the meetings, knowing this. I even considered wearing a ring. I considered wearing a paper bag over my head. >> A bag over you head. Exactly, exactly. >> But at the same time I felt that I need to be myself and the best thing to, there's a correlation between the perceived leadership and confidence, that I needed to just go in there and be confident in myself so, I knew that, that could work against me, but I just needed to be myself, but I had to make sure that I was really confident and really believed in what I said and honestly, besides being confident and aggressive, I also, felt comfortable, because a lot of the people I talked to, I knew from my network and I had many of my male friends and female friends who knew these VC's, do the initial introduction, so I felt more comfortable going in, for them already knowing that I had somebody else saying that I was awesome. >> Yeah, and you've had many mentors and sponsors along the way too. >> Absolutely, I would say it's one of the most important things, for my career from the very beginning. When I graduated from business school, I actually emailed my mentors and said, "Here are the things I care about for finding a job." I didn't have to go find any jobs. They actually found all these jobs. for me, set up informational interviews, for me and I just went in and did it, all the informational interviews, got the offers and just choose one of them that I wanted to be in but, even for starting my company, my co-founder, Eric Darnell was a write and director of all four "Madagascar" films and I got introduced to him, through my mentor, Glen Entis who is the co-founder of PDI Dreamworks Animation and he was my mentor through Zynga and then, Gen Entis introduced me to Alvy Ray Smith, who is the co-founder of Pixar, who also became our advisor, Alvy Ray Smith, then introduced us to Glen Keane, who is the animator for "Little Mermaid", "Alaadin". >> The power of networks. >> It was all through the network and through my mentors that I found, a lot of the opportunities that I have and they also helped my through my personal life and how to navigate being entrepreneur and I rely on them so much. >> So, beyond finding the right mentor and sponsor what else would you give, your parting words to the young Maureen fans out there? >> I think there's a tendency for society to pressure you to conform, to money, fame, beauty and you don't need to listen to that and you don't need to be bucketed. I designed my own major at Stanford and with an eBay, I took four different roles. I just kept on creating my own roles and refusing to be bucketed as a creative or a suit and you can be who you are and create a category onto yourself and so, don't feel pressured to listen to what society is telling you. The other thing, is if you are faced with pushed back for being promoted and you feel like it's maybe because you're a woman, we have a tendency as women to start blaming ourselves and thinking there's something wrong with us, versus research shows men are most likely to blame the system, don't let it affect you and bring you down, because you need to actually be confident and believe in yourself in order to rise above. >> Great.
