>>Well, hi everybody. I'm John Walls here and welcome back to the cubes, continuing coverage and splunk.com 21. And we've talked a lot about data, obviously, um, and a number of partnerships and the point of resources that it's going on in this space. And certainly a very valuable partnership that Splunk has right now is one with Intel. And with me to talk a little bit more about that is Rick Echavarria, who is the vice president of sales and the marketing group at Intel. Rick. Good to see it today. Thanks for joining us on the queue. It's >>Good to see you, John, and thanks for having us. >>You bet. No glad to have you as part of the.com coverage as well. Um, well, first off, let's just for folks at home, uh, who would like to learn more about this relationship, the Splunk Intel partnership, if you would give us that the 30,000 foot picture of it right now, in terms of, of how it began and how it's evolved to the point where it resides today. >>Yeah. Uh, sure. Glad to do that. You know, Splunk is had for many years, uh, position as, as one of the world's best, uh, security information and event management platform. So just like many customers in the cybersecurity space, they're probably trying to retire their technical debt. And, and what are the areas of important focuses to SIM space, right? The SIM segment within cybersecurity. And so the initial engagement between Intel and Splunk started with the information security group at Intel, looking to, again, retire the technical debt, bring next generation SIM technology. And that started, uh, the engagement with Splunk again, to go solve the cybersecurity challenges. One of the things that we quickly learned is that, uh, those flung offers a great platform, you know, from a SIM point of view, as you know, the cyber security segment, the surface area of attack, the number of attacks kids were increased. >>And we quickly realized that this needed to be a collaboration in order for us to be able to work together, to optimize our infrastructure. So it could scale, it could be performance, it could be reliable, uh, to protect Intel's business. And as we started to work with Splunk, we realized, Hey, this is a great opportunity. Intel is benefiting from it. Why don't we start working together and create a reference architecture so that our joint customers also benefit from the collaboration that we have in the cybersecurity space, as we were building the Intel cybersecurity infrastructure platform. So that re that was really the beginning of, uh, of the collaboration around described here and a little bit more, >>Right? So, so you had this, this good working relationship and said, Hey, why don't we get together? Let's get the band together and see what we can do for our car joint clients down the road. Right. So, so what about those benefits that, because you've now you've got this almost as force multiplier right. Of, of Intel's experience. And then what Splunk has been able to do in the data analytics world. Um, what kind of values are being derived, do you think with that partnership? >>Well, obviously we feel much better about our cyber security posture. Um, and, uh, and what's sort of interesting, John, is that we realized that we were what started out as a conversation on SIM. Uh, it really turned out to be an opportunity for us to look at Splunk as a data platform. And, you know, in the technology world, you sometimes hear people talk about the horizontal capabilities. Then the vertical usage is really the security. Uh, the SIM technology. It really became one of several, sorry about the noise in the background. One, uh, became a vertical application. And then we realized that we can apply this platform to some other usages. And in addition to that, you know, when you think about cybersecurity and what we use for SIM that tends to be part of your core systems in it, we started to explore what can we do with what could we do with other data types for other different types of applications. >>And so what we, what we decided to do is we would go explore usages of this data at the edge, uh, of, of the network, and really started to move into much more of that operational technology space. When we realized that Splunk could really, uh, that we could integrate that we can ingest other types of data. And that started a second collaboration around our open Vino technology and our AI capabilities at the edge with the ingestion and the machine learning capabilities of Splunk, so that we can take things like visual data and start creating dashboards for, for example, uh, managing the flow of people, you know, especially in COVID environment. So, uh, and understanding utilization of spaces. So it really started with SIM is moved to the edge. And now we realized that there's a continuum in this data platform that we can build other usages around. >>What was that learning curve like when you went out to the edge, because a lot of people are talking about it, right. And there was a lot of banter about this is where we have to be, but you guys put your money where your mouth was, right? Yeah. You went out, you, you explored that frontier. And, and so what was that like? And, and, and what I guess maybe kind of being early in, uh, what advantage do you think that has given you as that process has matured a little bit? >>Well, it's really interesting John, because what really accelerated our engagement with Splunk in that space was the pandemic. And we had, uh, in 2020 Intel announced the pandemic response technology initiative, where we decided we were going to invest $50 million in accelerating technologies and solutions and partnerships to go solve some of the biggest challenges that depend on them. It was presenting to the world at large. And one of those areas was around companies trying to figure out how to, how to manage spaces, how to manage, you know, the number of people that are in a particular space and social distancing and things of that nature. And, you know, we ended up engaging with Splunk and this collaboration, again, to start looking at visual data, right, integrating that with our open Vino platform and again, their machine learning and algorithms, and start then creating what you would call more operational technology types of application based on visual data. Now these will have other applications that could be used for security usages. It could be used for, again, social distancing, uh, the utilization of acids, but their pandemic and that program that ends the launch is really what became the catalyst for our collaboration with Splunk that allowed us to expand into space. >>Right. And you've done a tremendous amount of work in the healthcare space. I mean, especially in the last year and a half with Penn and the pandemic, um, can you give just a couple of examples of that maybe the variety of uses and the variety of, uh, processes that you've had an influence in, because I think it's pretty impressive. >>Yeah. We, um, there's quite a bit of breadth in the types of solutions we've deployed as part of the pandemic response. John, you can think of some of the, I wouldn't call these things basic things, but you think about telehealth and that improving the telehealth experience all the way to creating privacy aware or sorry, solutions for privacy sensitive usage is where you're doing things like getting multiple institutions to share their data with the right privacy, uh, which, you know, going back to secure and privacy with the right, uh, protections for that data, but being allowed, allowing organization a and organization B partner together use data, create algorithms that both organizations benefit from it. An example of that is, is work we've done around x-ray, uh, and using x-rays to detect COVID on certain populations. So we've gone from those, you know, data protection, algorithm, development, development type of solutions to, to work that we've done in tele-health. So, uh, and, and a lot of other solutions in between, obviously in the high-performance, uh, space we've invested in high-performance computing for, to help the researchers, uh, find cures, uh, for the current pandemic and then looking at future pandemic. So it's been quite a breadth of, uh, uh, of solutions and it's really a Testament also to the breadth of Intel's portfolio and partnerships to be able to, uh, enable so much in such a short amount of time. >>I totally agree, man. Just reading it a little bit about it, about that work, and you talk about the, the breadth of that, the breadth and the depth of that is certainly impressive. So just in general, we'll just put healthcare in this big lump of customers. So what, what do you think the value proposition of your partnership with Splunk is in terms of providing, you know, ultimate value to your customers, because you're dealing with so many different sectors. Um, but if you could just give a summary from your perspective, this is what we do. This is why this power. >>Yeah. Well, customers, uh, talk about transformation. You know, there's a lot of conversation around transformation, right before the pandemic and through and center, but there's a lot of talk about companies wanting to transform and, you know, in order to be able to transform what are the key elements of that is, uh, to be able to capture the right data and then take, turn that data into the right outcomes. And that is something that requires obviously the capabilities and the ability to capture, to ingest, to analyze the data and to do that on an infrastructure that is going to scale with your business, that is going to be reliable. And that is going to be, to give you the flexibility for the types of solutions that you're wanting to apply. And that's really what this blog, uh, collaboration with Intel is going to do. It's, it's just a great example, John, uh, of the strategy that our CEO, pat Gelsinger recently talked about the importance of software to our business. >>This plump collaboration is right in the center of that. They have capabilities in SIM in it observability, uh, in many other areas that his whole world is turning data into, you know, into outcomes into results. But that has to be done on an infrastructure that again, will scale with your business, just like what's the case with Intel and our cybersecurity platform, right? We need to collaborate to make sure that this was going to scale with the demand demands of our business, and that requires close integration of, of hardware and software. The other point that I will make is that the, what started out as a collaboration with between Intel and Splunk, it's also expanding to other partners in the ecosystem. So I like to talk to you a little bit on a work stream that we have ongoing between Intel Splunk, HPE and the Lloyd. >>And why is that important is because, uh, as customers are deploying solutions, they're going to be deploying applications and they're going to have data in multiple environments on premise across multiple clouds. And we have to give, uh, these customers the ability to go gather the data from multiple sources. And that's part of the effort that we're developing with HPE and the Lloyd's will allow people to gather data, perform their analytics, regardless, regardless of their where their data is and be able to deploy the Splunk platform across these multiple environments, whether it's going to be on prem or it's going to be in a pure cloud environment, or it's going to be in a hybrid with multiple clouds, and you're willing to give our customers the most flexibility that we can. And that's where that collaboration with Deloitte and HP is going to come into play. >>Right. And you understand Splunk, right? You will get the workload. I mean, it's, it's totally, there's great familiarity there, which is a great value for that customer base, because you could apply that. So, so, um, obviously you're giving us like multiple thumbs up about the partnership. What excites you the most about going forward? Because as you know, it's all about, you know, where are we going from here? Yes. Now where we've been. So in terms of where you're going together in that partnership, well, what excites you about that? >>Well, first of all, we're excited because it's just a great example of the value that we can deliver to customers when you really understand their pain points and then have the capability to integrate solutions that encompass software and hardware together. So I think that the fact that we've been able to do the work on, on that core SIM space, where we now have a reference architecture that shows how you could really scale and deliver that a Splunk solution for your cybersecurity needs in a, in a scale of one reliable and with high levels of security, of course. And the fact that we then also been able to co-develop fairly quickly solutions for the edge, allows customers now to have that data platform that can scale and can access a lot of different data types from the edge to the cloud. That is really unique. I think it provides a lot of flexibility and it is applicable to a lot of vertical industry segments and a lot of customers >>And be attractive to a lot of customers. I'm John Furrier with theCUBE I'm in our Palo Alto studios with our quarantine crew. We have a great lineup here for DockerCon 2020. Virtual event, normally it was in person face to face. I'll be with you throughout the day from an amazing lineup of content, over 50 different sessions, cube tracks, keynotes, and we've got two great co-hosts here with Docker, Jenny Burcio and Bret Fisher. We'll be with you all day today, taking you through the program, helping you navigate the sessions. I'm so excited. Jenny, this is a virtual event. We talk about this. Can you believe it? Maybe the internet gods be with us today and hope everyone's having-- >> Yes. >> Easy time getting in. Jenny, Bret, thank you for-- >> Hello. >> Being here. >> Hey. >> Hi everyone, so great to see everyone chatting and telling us where they're from. Welcome to the Docker community. We have a great day planned for you. >> Guys great job getting this all together. I know how hard it is. These virtual events are hard to pull off. I'm blown away by the community at Docker. The amount of sessions that are coming in the sponsor support has been amazing. Just the overall excitement around the brand and the opportunities given this tough times where we're in. It's super exciting again, made the internet gods be with us throughout the day, but there's plenty of content. Bret's got an amazing all day marathon group of people coming in and chatting. Jenny, this has been an amazing journey and it's a great opportunity. Tell us about the virtual event. Why DockerCon virtual. Obviously everyone's canceling their events, but this is special to you guys. Talk about DockerCon virtual this year. >> The Docker community shows up at DockerCon every year, and even though we didn't have the opportunity to do an in person event this year, we didn't want to lose the time that we all come together at DockerCon. The conversations, the amazing content and learning opportunities. So we decided back in December to make DockerCon a virtual event. And of course when we did that, there was no quarantine we didn't expect, you know, I certainly didn't expect to be delivering it from my living room, but we were just, I mean we were completely blown away. There's nearly 70,000 people across the globe that have registered for DockerCon today. And when you look at DockerCon of past right live events, really and we're learning are just the tip of the iceberg and so thrilled to be able to deliver a more inclusive global event today. And we have so much planned I think. Bret, you want to tell us some of the things that you have planned? >> Well, I'm sure I'm going to forget something 'cause there's a lot going on. But, we've obviously got interviews all day today on this channel with John and the crew. Jenny has put together an amazing set of all these speakers, and then you have the captain's on deck, which is essentially the YouTube live hangout where we just basically talk shop. It's all engineers, all day long. Captains and special guests. And we're going to be in chat talking to you about answering your questions. Maybe we'll dig into some stuff based on the problems you're having or the questions you have. Maybe there'll be some random demos, but it's basically not scripted, it's an all day long unscripted event. So I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun hanging out in there. >> Well guys, I want to just say it's been amazing how you structured this so everyone has a chance to ask questions, whether it's informal laid back in the captain's channel or in the sessions, where the speakers will be there with their presentations. But Jenny, I want to get your thoughts because we have a site out there that's structured a certain way for the folks watching. If you're on your desktop, there's a main stage hero. There's then tracks and Bret's running the captain's tracks. You can click on that link and jump into his session all day long. But we're going to be basically starting the day with two of my good Docker captain friends, (murmurs) and Laura Taco. And we're going to basically start you out and at the end of this keynote, at the end of this hour and we're going to get you going and then you can maybe jump out and go to take some sessions. Maybe there's some stuff you want to check out and other sessions that you want to chat and talk with the instructors, the speakers there, and then you're going to come back to us, right? Or go over, check out the interviews. So the idea is you're hopping back and forth and throughout the day we're basically changing out every hour. We're not just changing out the guests basically, but we're also changing out the topics that we can cover because different guests will have different expertise. We're going to have some special guests in from Microsoft, talk about some of the cool stuff going on there, and basically it's captains all day long. So we're trying to recreate that experience online. Like Jenny said, the code of conduct is important. So, we're all in this together with the chat, so try to be nice in there. These are all real humans that, have feelings just like me. So let's try to keep it cool. I tweeted this out last night and let them get you guys' reaction to this because there's been a lot of talk around the COVID crisis that we're in, but there's also a positive upshot to this is Cambridge and explosion of developers that are going to be building new apps. And I said, you know, apps aren't going to just change the world, they're going to save the world. So a lot of the theme here is the impact that developers are having right now in the current situation. If we get the goodness of compose and all the things going on in Docker and the relationships, this real impact happening with the developer community. And it's pretty evident in the program and some of the talks and some of the examples. how containers and microservices are certainly changing the world and helping save the world, your thoughts. >> Like you said, a number of sessions and interviews in the program today that really dive into that. And even particularly around COVID, Clement Beyondo is sharing his company's experience, from being able to continue operations in Italy when they were completely shut down beginning of March. We have also in theCUBE channel several interviews about from the national Institute of health and precision cancer medicine at the end of the day. And you just can really see how containerization and developers are moving in industry and really humanity forward because of what they're able to build and create, with advances in technology. >> Yeah and the first responders and these days is developers. Bret compose is getting a lot of traction on Twitter. I can see some buzz already building up. There's huge traction with compose, just the ease of use and almost a call for arms for integrating into all the system language libraries, I mean, what's going on with compose? I mean, what's the captain say about this? I mean, it seems to be really tracking in terms of demand and interest. >> I think we're over 700,000 composed files on GitHub. So it's definitely beyond just the standard Docker run commands. It's definitely the next tool that people use to run containers. Just by having that we just buy, and that's not even counting. I mean that's just counting the files that are named Docker compose YAML. So I'm sure a lot of you out there have created a YAML file to manage your local containers or even on a server with Docker compose. And the nice thing is is Docker is doubling down on that. So we've gotten some news recently, from them about what they want to do with opening the spec up, getting more companies involved because compose is already gathered so much interest from the community. You know, AWS has importers, there's Kubernetes importers for it. So there's more stuff coming and we might just see something here in a few minutes. >> All right, well let's get into the keynote guys, jump into the keynote. And then deploys the app directly from the Docker command line to the clouds in just two commands. A development team would use this to quickly share functional changes of their app with the product management team, with beta testers or other development teams. Let's go ahead and take a look at our app. Now, this is a web app, that randomly pulls words from the database, and assembles them into sentences. You can see it's a pretty typical three tier application with each tier implemented in its own container. We have a front end web service, a middle tier, which implements the logic to randomly pull the words from the database and assemble them and a backend database. And here you can see the database uses the Postgres official image from Docker hub. Now let's first run the app locally using Docker command line and the Docker engine in Docker desktop. We'll do a Doc compose up and you can see that it's pulling the containers from our Docker organization account. Wordsmith, inc. Now that it's up. Let's go ahead and look at local host and we'll confirm that the application is functioning as desired. So there's one sentence, let's pull and now you and you can indeed see that we are pulling random words and assembling into sentences. Now you can also see though that the look and feel is a bit dated. And so Lanca is going to show us how easy it is to make changes and share them with the rest of the team. Lanca, over to you. >> Thank you, so I have, the source code of our application on my machine and I have updated it with the latest team from DockerCon 2020. So before committing the code, I'm going to build the application locally and run it, to verify that indeed the changes are good. So I'm going to build with Docker compose the image for the web service. Now that the image has been built, I'm going to deploy it locally. Wait to compose up. We can now check the dashboard in a Docker desktop that indeed our containers are up and running, and we can access, we can open in the web browser, the end point for the web service. So as we can see, we have the latest changes in for our application. So as you can see, the application has been updated successfully. So now, I'm going to push the image that I have just built to my organization's shared repository on Docker hub. So I can do this with Docker compose push web. Now that the image has been updated in the Docker hub repository, or my teammates can access it and check the changes. >> Excellent, well, thank you Lanca. Now of course, in these times, video conferencing is the new normal, and as great as it is, video conferencing does not allow users to actually test the application. And so, to allow us to have our app be accessible by others outside organizations such as beta testers or others, let's go ahead and deploy to the cloud. >> Sure we, can do this by employing a context. A Docker context, is a mechanism that we can use to target different platforms for deploying containers. The context we hold, information as the endpoint for the platform, and also how to authenticate to it. So I'm going to list the context that I have set locally. As you can see, I'm currently using the default context that is pointing to my local Docker engine. So all the commands that I have issued so far, we're targeting my local engine. Now, in order to deploy the application on a cloud. I have an account in the Azure Cloud, where I have no resource running currently, and I have created for this account, dedicated context that will hold the information on how to connect it to it. So now all I need to do, is to switch to this context, with Docker context use, and the name of my cloud context. So all the commands that I'm going to run, from now on, are going to target the cloud platform. So we can also check very, more simpler, in a simpler way we can check the running containers with Docker PS. So as we see no container is running in my cloud account. Now to deploy the application, all I need to do is to run a Docker compose up. And this will trigger the deployment of my application. >> Thanks Lanca. Now notice that Lanca did not have to move the composed file from Docker desktop to Azure. Notice you have to make any changes to the Docker compose file, and nor did she change any of the containers that she and I were using locally in our local environments. So the same composed file, same images, run locally and upon Azure without changes. While the app is deploying to Azure, let's highlight some of the features in Docker hub that helps teams with remote first collaboration. So first, here's our team's account where it (murmurs) and you can see the updated container sentences web that Lanca just pushed a couple of minutes ago. As far as collaboration, we can add members using their Docker ID or their email, and then we can organize them into different teams depending on their role in the application development process. So and then Lancae they're organized into different teams, we can assign them permissions, so that teams can work in parallel without stepping on each other's changes accidentally. For example, we'll give the engineering team full read, write access, whereas the product management team will go ahead and just give read only access. So this role based access controls, is just one of the many features in Docker hub that allows teams to collaboratively and quickly develop applications. Okay Lanca, how's our app doing? >> Our app has been successfully deployed to the cloud. So, we can easily check either the Azure portal to verify the containers running for it or simpler we can run a Docker PS again to get the list with the containers that have been deployed for it. In the output from the Docker PS, we can see an end point that we can use to access our application in the web browser. So we can see the application running in clouds. It's really up to date and now we can take this particular endpoint and share it within our organization such that anybody can have a look at it. >> That's cool Onka. We showed how we can deploy an app to the cloud in minutes and just two commands, and using commands that Docker users already know, thanks so much. In that sneak preview, you saw a team developing an app collaboratively, with a tool chain that includes Docker desktop and Docker hub. And simply by switching Docker context from their local environment to the cloud, deploy that app to the cloud, to Azure without leaving the command line using Docker commands they already know. And in doing so, really simplifying for development team, getting their app from code to cloud. And just as important, what you did not see, was a lot of complexity. You did not see cloud specific interfaces, user management or security. You did not see us having to provision and configure compute networking and storage resources in the cloud. And you did not see infrastructure specific application changes to either the composed file or the Docker images. And by simplifying a way that complexity, these new features help application DevOps teams, quickly iterate and get their ideas, their apps from code to cloud, and helping development teams, build share and run great applications, is what Docker is all about. A Docker is able to simplify for development teams getting their app from code to cloud quickly as a result of standards, products and ecosystem partners. It starts with open standards for applications and application artifacts, and active open source communities around those standards to ensure portability and choice. Then as you saw in the demo, the Docker experience delivered by Docker desktop and Docker hub, simplifies a team's collaborative development of applications, and together with ecosystem partners provides every stage of an application development tool chain. For example, deploying applications to the cloud in two commands. What you saw on the demo, well that's an extension of our strategic partnership with Microsoft, which we announced yesterday. And you can learn more about our partnership from Amanda Silver from Microsoft later today, right here at DockerCon. Another tool chain stage, the capability to scan applications for security and vulnerabilities, as a result of our partnership with Sneak, which we announced last week. You can learn more about that partnership from Peter McKay, CEO Sneak, again later today, right here at DockerCon. A third example, development team can automate the build of container images upon a simple get push, as a result of Docker hub integrations with GitHub and Alaska and Bitbucket. As a final example of Docker and the ecosystem helping teams quickly build applications, together with our ISV partners. We offer in Docker hub over 500 official and verified publisher images of ready to run Dockerized application components such as databases, load balancers, programming languages, and much more. Of course, none of this happens without people. And I would like to take a moment to thank four groups of people in particular. First, the Docker team, past and present. We've had a challenging 12 months including a restructuring and then a global pandemic, and yet their support for each other, and their passion for the product, this community and our customers has never been stronger. We think our community, Docker wouldn't be Docker without you, and whether you're one of the 50 Docker captains, they're almost 400 meetup organizers, the thousands of contributors and maintainers. Every day you show up, you give back, you teach new support. We thank our users, more than six and a half million developers who have built more than 7 million applications and are then sharing those applications through Docker hub at a rate of more than one and a half billion poles per week. Those apps are then run, are more than 44 million Docker engines. And finally, we thank our customers, the over 18,000 docker subscribers, both individual developers and development teams from startups to large organizations, 60% of which are outside the United States. There are over 600 COVID-19 related publicly available projects on Docker hub today, from data processing to genome analytics to data visualization folding at home. The distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, is also available on Docker hub, and it uses spirit compute capacity to analyze COVID-19 proteins to aid in the design of new therapies. And right here at DockerCon, you can hear how Clemente Biondo and his company engineering in Gagne area Informatica are using Docker in the fight with COVID-19 in Italy every day. Now, in addition to fighting the pandemic directly, as a community, we also have an opportunity to bridge the disruption the pandemic is wreaking. It's impacting us at work and at home in every country around the world and every aspect of our lives. For example, many of you have a student at home, whose world is going to be very different when they returned to school. As employees, all of us have experienced the stresses from working from home as well as many of the benefits and in fact 75% of us say that going forward, we're going to continue to work from home at least occasionally. And of course one of the biggest disruptions has been job losses, over 35 million in the United States alone. And we know that's affected many of you. And yet your skills are in such demand and so important now more than ever. And that's why here at DockerCon, we want to try to do our part to help, and we're promoting this hashtag on Twitter, hashtag DockerCon jobs, where job seekers and those offering jobs can reach out to one another and connect. He's with Red Monk, the analyst firm and has been tracking open source for many generations. He's been doing amazing work. Watch his great keynote. I'm going to be interviewing him live right after. So stay with us and enjoy the rest of the day. We'll see you back shortly. (upbeat music) >> Hi, I'm James Governor, one of the co-founders of a company called RedMonk. We're an industry research firm focusing on developer led technology adoption. So that's I guess why Docker invited me to DockerCon 2020 to talk about some trends that we're seeing in the world of work and software development. So Monk Chips, that's who I am. I spent a lot of time on Twitter. It's a great research tool. It's a great way to find out what's going on with keep track of, as I say, there's people that we value so highly software developers, engineers and practitioners. So when I started talking to Docker about this event and it was pre Rhona, should we say, the idea of a crowd wasn't a scary thing, but today you see something like this, it makes you feel uncomfortable. This is not a place that I want to be. I'm pretty sure it's a place you don't want to be. And you know, to that end, I think it's interesting quote by Ellen Powell, she says, "Work from home is now just work" And we're going to see more and more of that. Organizations aren't feeling the same way they did about work before. Who all these people? Who is my cLancaern? So GitHub says has 50 million developers right on its network. Now, one of the things I think is most interesting, it's not that it has 50 million developers. Perhaps that's a proxy for number of developers worldwide. But quite frankly, a lot of those accounts, there's all kinds of people there. They're just Selena's. There are data engineers, there are data scientists, there are product managers, there were tech marketers. It's a big, big community and it goes way beyond just software developers itself. Frankly for me, I'd probably be saying there's more like 20 to 25 million developers worldwide, but GitHub knows a lot about the world of code. So what else do they know? One of the things they know is that world of code software and opensource, is becoming increasingly global. I get so excited about this stuff. The idea that there are these different software communities around the planet where we're seeing massive expansions in terms of things like open source. Great example is Nigeria. So Nigeria more than 200 million people, right? The energy there in terms of events, in terms of learning, in terms of teaching, in terms of the desire to code, the desire to launch businesses, desire to be part of a global software community is just so exciting. And you know, these, this sort of energy is not just in Nigeria, it's in other countries in Africa, it's happening in Egypt. It's happening around the world. This energy is something that's super interesting to me. We need to think about that. We've got global that we need to solve. And software is going to be a big part of that. At the moment, we can talk about other countries, but what about frankly the gender gap, the gender issue that, you know, from 1984 onwards, the number of women taking computer science degrees began to, not track but to create in comparison to what men were doing. The tech industry is way too male focused, there are men that are dominant, it's not welcoming, we haven't found ways to have those pathways and frankly to drive inclusion. And the women I know in tech, have to deal with the massively disproportionate amount of stress and things like online networks. But talking about online networks and talking about a better way of living, I was really excited by get up satellite recently, was a fantastic demo by Alison McMillan and she did a demo of a code spaces. So code spaces is Microsoft online ID, new platform that they've built. And online IDs, we're never quite sure, you know, plenty of people still out there just using the max. But, visual studio code has been a big success. And so this idea of moving to one online IDE, it's been around that for awhile. What they did was just make really tight integration. So you're in your GitHub repo and just be able to create a development environment with effectively one click, getting rid of all of the act shaving, making it super easy. And what I loved was it the demo, what Ali's like, yeah cause this is great. One of my kids are having a nap, I can just start (murmurs) and I don't have to sort out all the rest of it. And to me that was amazing. It was like productivity as inclusion. I'm here was a senior director at GitHub. They're doing this amazing work and then making this clear statement about being a parent. And I think that was fantastic. Because that's what, to me, importantly just working from home, which has been so challenging for so many of us, began to open up new possibilities, and frankly exciting possibilities. So Alley's also got a podcast parent-driven development, which I think is super important. Because this is about men and women rule in this together show parenting is a team sport, same as software development. And the idea that we should be thinking about, how to be more productive, is super important to me. So I want to talk a bit about developer culture and how it led to social media. Because you know, your social media, we're in this ad bomb stage now. It's TikTok, it's like exercise, people doing incredible back flips and stuff like that. Doing a bunch of dancing. We've had the world of sharing cat gifts, Facebook, we sort of see social media is I think a phenomenon in its own right. Whereas the me, I think it's interesting because it's its progenitors, where did it come from? So here's (murmurs) So 1971, one of the features in the emergency management information system, that he built, which it's topical, it was for medical tracking medical information as well, medical emergencies, included a bulletin board system. So that it could keep track of what people were doing on a team and make sure that they were collaborating effectively, boom! That was the start of something big, obviously. Another day I think is worth looking at 1983, Sorania Pullman, spanning tree protocol. So at DEC, they were very good at distributed systems. And the idea was that you can have a distributed system and so much of the internet working that we do today was based on radius work. And then it showed that basically, you could span out a huge network so that everyone could collaborate. That is incredibly exciting in terms of the trends, that I'm talking about. So then let's look at 1988, you've got IRC. IRC what developer has not used IRC, right. Well, I guess maybe some of the other ones might not have. But I don't know if we're post IRC yet, but (murmurs) at a finished university, really nailed it with IRC as a platform that people could communicate effectively with. And then we go into like 1991. So we've had IRC, we've had finished universities, doing a lot of really fantastic work about collaboration. And I don't think it was necessarily an accident that this is where the line is twofold, announced Linux. So Linux was a wonderfully packaged, idea in terms of we're going to take this Unix thing. And when I say package, what a package was the idea that we could collaborate on software. So, it may have just been the work of one person, but clearly what made it important, made it interesting, was finding a social networking pattern, for software development so that everybody could work on something at scale. That was really, I think, fundamental and foundational. Now I think it's important, We're going to talk about Linus, to talk about some things that are not good about software culture, not good about open source culture, not good about hacker culture. And that's where I'm going to talk about code of conduct. We have not been welcoming to new people. We got the acronyms, JFTI, We call people news, that's super unhelpful. We've got to find ways to be more welcoming and more self-sustaining in our communities, because otherwise communities will fail. And I'd like to thank everyone that has a code of conduct and has encouraged others to have codes of conduct. We need to have codes of conduct that are enforced to ensure that we have better diversity at our events. And that's what women, underrepresented minorities, all different kinds of people need to be well looked off to and be in safe and inclusive spaces. And that's the online events. But of course it's also for all of our activities offline. So Linus, as I say, I'm not the most charming of characters at all time, but he has done some amazing technology. So we got to like 2005 the creation of GIT. Not necessarily the distributed version control system that would win. But there was some interesting principles there, and they'd come out of the work that he had done in terms of trying to build and sustain the Linux code base. So it was very much based on experience. He had an itch that he needed to scratch and there was a community that was this building, this thing. So what was going to be the option, came up with Git foundational to another huge wave of social change, frankly get to logical awesome. April 20 April, 2008 GitHub, right? GiHub comes up, they've looked at Git, they've packaged it up, they found a way to make it consumable so the teams could use it and really begin to take advantage of the power of that distributed version control model. Now, ironically enough, of course they centralized the service in doing so. So we have a single point of failure on GitHub. But on the other hand, the notion of the poll request, the primitives that they established and made usable by people, that changed everything in terms of software development. I think another one that I'd really like to look at is Slack. So Slack is a huge success used by all different kinds of businesses. But it began specifically as a pivot from a company called Glitch. It was a game company and they still wanted, a tool internally that was better than IRC. So they built out something that later became Slack. So Slack 2014, is established as a company and basically it was this Slack fit software engineering. The focus on automation, the conversational aspects, the asynchronous aspects. It really pulled things together in a way that was interesting to software developers. And I think we've seen this pattern in the world, frankly, of the last few years. Software developers are influences. So Slack first used by the engineering teams, later used by everybody. And arguably you could say the same thing actually happened with Apple. Apple was mainstreamed by developers adopting that platform. Get to 2013, boom again, Solomon Hikes, Docker, right? So Docker was, I mean containers were not new, they were just super hard to use. People found it difficult technology, it was Easter Terek. It wasn't something that they could fully understand. Solomon did an incredible job of understanding how containers could fit into modern developer workflows. So if we think about immutable images, if we think about the ability to have everything required in the package where you are, it really tied into what people were trying to do with CICD, tied into microservices. And certainly the notion of sort of display usability Docker nailed that, and I guess from this conference, at least the rest is history. So I want to talk a little bit about, scratching the itch. And particularly what has become, I call it the developer authentic. So let's go into dark mode now. I've talked about developers laying out these foundations and frameworks that, the mainstream, frankly now my son, he's 14, he (murmurs) at me if I don't have dark mode on in an application. And it's this notion that developers, they have an aesthetic, it does get adopted I mean it's quite often jokey. One of the things we've seen in the really successful platforms like GitHub, Docker, NPM, let's look at GitHub. Let's look at over that Playfulness. I think was really interesting. And that changes the world of work, right? So we've got the world of work which can be buttoned up, which can be somewhat tight. I think both of those companies were really influential, in thinking that software development, which is a profession, it's also something that can and is fun. And I think about how can we make it more fun? How can we develop better applications together? Takes me to, if we think about Docker talking about build, share and run, for me the key word is share, because development has to be a team sport. It needs to be sharing. It needs to be kind and it needs to bring together people to do more effective work. Because that's what it's all about, doing effective work. If you think about zoom, it's a proxy for collaboration in terms of its value. So we've got all of these airlines and frankly, add up that their share that add up their total value. It's currently less than Zoom. So video conferencing has become so much of how we live now on a consumer basis. But certainly from a business to business perspective. I want to talk about how we live now. I want to think about like, what will come out all of this traumatic and it is incredibly traumatic time? I'd like to say I'm very privileged. I can work from home. So thank you to all the frontline workers that are out there that they're not in that position. But overall what I'm really thinking about, there's some things that will come out of this that will benefit us as a culture. Looking at cities like Paris, Milan, London, New York, putting a new cycling infrastructure, so that people can social distance and travel outside because they don't feel comfortable on public transport. I think sort of amazing widening pavements or we can't do that. All these cities have done it literally overnight. This sort of changes is exciting. And what does come off that like, oh there are some positive aspects of the current issues that we face. So I've got a conference or I've got a community that may and some of those, I've been working on. So Katie from HashiCorp and Carla from container solutions basically about, look, what will the world look like in developer relations? Can we have developer relations without the air miles? 'Cause developer advocates, they do too much travel ends up, you know, burning them out, develop relations. People don't like to say no. They may have bosses that say, you know, I was like, Oh that corporates went great. Now we're going to roll it out worldwide to 47 cities. That's stuff is terrible. It's terrible from a personal perspective, it's really terrible from an environmental perspective. We need to travel less. Virtual events are crushing it. Microsoft just at build, right? Normally that'd be just over 10,000 people, they had 245,000 plus registrations. 40,000 of them in the last day, right? Red Hat summit, 80,000 people, IBM think 90,000 people, GitHub Crushed it as well. Like this is a more inclusive way people can dip in. They can be from all around the world. I mentioned Nigeria and how fantastic it is. Very often Nigerian developers and advocates find it hard to get visas. Why should they be shut out of events? Events are going to start to become remote first because frankly, look at it, if you're turning in those kinds of numbers, and Microsoft was already doing great online events, but they absolutely nailed it. They're going to have to ask some serious questions about why everybody should get back on a plane again. So if you're going to do remote, you've got to be intentional about it. It's one thing I've learned some exciting about GitLab. GitLab's culture is amazing. Everything is documented, everything is public, everything is transparent. Think that really clear and if you look at their principles, everything, you can't have implicit collaboration models. Everything needs to be documented and explicit, so that anyone can work anywhere and they can still be part of the team. Remote first is where we're at now, Coinbase, Shopify, even Barkley says the not going to go back to having everybody in offices in the way they used to. This is a fundamental shift. And I think it's got significant implications for all industries, but definitely for software development. Here's the thing, the last 20 years were about distributed computing, microservices, the cloud, we've got pretty good at that. The next 20 years will be about distributed work. We can't have everybody living in San Francisco and London and Berlin. The talent is distributed, the talent is elsewhere. So how are we going to build tools? Who is going to scratch that itch to build tools to make them more effective? Who's building the next generation of apps, you are, thanks.

CUBE coverage here in Moscone in San Francisco for RSA, 2020. I'm John Furrier host of theCUBE. We've got a great guest here talking about cybersecurity and the impact with AI and the role of data. It's always great to have Derek Manky on Chief Security Insights Global Threat Alliances with FortiGuard Lab, part of Fortinet, FortiGuard Labs is great. Great organization. Thanks for coming on. >> It's a pleasure always to be here-- >> So you guys do a great threat report that we always cover. So it covers all the bases and it really kind of illustrates state of the art of viruses, the protection, threats, et cetera. But you're part of FortiGuard Labs. >> Yeah, that's right. >> Part of Fortinet, which is a security company, public. What is FortiGuard Labs? What do you guys do, what's your mission? >> So FortiGuard Labs has existed since day one. You can think of us as the intelligence that's baked into the product, It's one thing to have a world-class product, but you need a world-class intelligence team backing that up. We're the ones fighting those fires against cybercrime on the backend, 24/7, 365 on a per second basis. We're processing threat intelligence. We've got over 10 million attacks or processing just per minute, over a hundred billion events, in any given day that we have to sift through. We have to find out what's relevant. We have to find gaps that we might be missing detection and protection. We got to push that out to a customer base of 450,000 customers through FortiGuard services and 5 million firewalls, 5 million plus firewalls we have now. So it's vitally important. You need intelligence to be able to detect and then protect and also to respond. Know the enemy, build a security solution around that and then also be able to act quickly about it if you are under active attack. So we're doing everything from creating security controls and protections. So up to, real time updates for customers, but we're also doing playbooks. So finding out who these attackers are, why are they coming up to you. For a CSO, why does that matter? So this is all part of FortiGuard Labs. >> How many people roughly involved ? Take us a little inside the curtain here. What's going on? Personnel size, scope. >> So we're over 235. So for a network security vendor, this was the largest global SOC, that exists. Again, this is behind the curtain like you said. These are the people that are, fighting those fires every day. But it's a large team and we have experts to cover the entire attack surface. So we're looking at not just a viruses, but we're looking at as zero-day weapons, exploits and attacks, everything from cyber crime to, cyber warfare, operational technology, all these sorts of things. And of course, to do that, we need to really heavily rely on good people, but also automation and artificial intelligence and machine learning. >> You guys are walking on a tight rope there. I can only imagine how complex and stressful it is, just imagining the velocity alone. But one of the trends that's coming up here, this year at RSA and is kind of been talking about in the industry is the who? Who is the attacker because, the shifts could shift and change. You got nation states are sitting out there, they're not going to have their hands dirty on this stuff. You've got a lot of dark web activity. You've got a lot of actors out there that go by different patterns. But you guys have an aperture and visibility into a lot of this stuff. >> Absolutely. >> So, you can almost say, that's that guy. That's the actor. That's a really big part. Talk about why that's important. >> This is critically important because in the past, let's say the first generation of, threat intelligence was very flat. It was to watch. So it was just talking about here's a bad IP, here's a bad URL, here's a bad file block hit. But nowadays, obviously the attackers are very clever. These are large organizations that are run a lot of people involved. There's real world damages happening and we're talking about, you look at OT attacks that are happening now. There's, in some cases, 30, $40 million from targeted ransom attacks that are happening. These people, A, have to be brought to justice. So we need to understand the who, but we also need to be able to predict what their next move is. This is very similar to, this is what you see online or CSI. The police trynna investigate and connect the dots like, plotting the strings and the yarn on the map. This is the same thing we're doing, but on a way more advanced level. And it's very important to be able to understand who these groups are, what tools they use, what are the weapons, cyber weapons, if you will, and what's their next move potentially going to be. So there's a lot of different reasons that's important. >> Derek, I was riffing with another guest earlier today about this notion of, government protection. You've got a military troops drop on our shores and my neighborhood, the Russians drop in my neighborhood. Guess what, the police will probably come in, and, or the army should take care of it. But if I got to run a business, I got to build my own militia. There's no support out there. The government's not going to support me. I'm hacked. Damage is done. You guys are in a way providing that critical lifeline that guard or shield, if you will, for customers. And they're going to want more of it. So I've got to ask you the hard question, which is, how are you guys going to constantly be on the front edge of all this? Because at the end of the day, you're in the protection business. Threats are coming at the speed of milliseconds and nanoseconds, in memory. You need memory, you need database. You've got to have real time. It's a tsunami of attack. You guys are the front lines of this. You're the heat shield. >> Yes, absolutely. >> How do you take it to the next level? >> Yeah, so collaboration, integration, having a broad integrated platform, that's our bread and butter. This is what we do. End-to-end security. The attack surface is growing. So we have to be able to, A, be able to cover all aspects of that attack surface and again, have intelligence. So we're doing sharing through partners. We have our core intelligence network. Like I said, we're relying heavily on machine learning models. We're able to find that needle in the haystack. Like, as I said earlier, we're getting over a hundred billion potential threat events a day. We have to dissect that. We have to break it down. We have to say, is this affecting endpoint? Is this effect affecting operational technology? What vertical, how do we process it? How do we verify that this is a real threat? And then most importantly, get that out in time and speed to our customers. So I started with automation years ago, but now really the way that we're doing this is through broad platform coverage. But also machine learning models for and-- >> I want to dig into machine learning because, I love that needle in the haystack analogy, because, if you take that to the next step, you got to stack a needles now. So you find the needle in the haystack. Now you got a bunch of needles, where do you find that? You need AI, you got to have some help. But you still got the human component. So talk about how you guys are advising customers on how you're using machine learning and get that AI up and running for customers and for yourselves. >> So we're technology people. I always look at this as the stack. The stack model, the bottom of the stack, you have automation. You have layer one, layer two. That's like the basic things for, feeds, threat feeds, how we can push out, automate, integrate that. Then you have the human. So the layer seven. This is where our human experts are coming in to actually advise our customers. We're creating a threat signals with FortiGuard Labs as an example. These are bulletins that's a quick two to three page read that a CSO can pick up and say, here's what FortiGuard Labs has discovered this week. Is this relevant to my network? Do I have these protections in place. There's also that automated, and so, I refer to this as a centaur model. It's half human half machine and, the machines are driving a lot of that, the day to day mundane tasks, if you will, but also finding, collecting the needles of needles. But then ultimately we have our humans that are processing that, analyzing it, creating the higher level strategic advice. We recently, we've launched a FortiAI, product as well. This has a concept of a virtual-- >> Hold on, back up a second. What's it called? >> FortiAI. >> So it's AI components. Is it a hardware box or-- >> This is a on-premise appliance built off of five plus years of learning that we've done in the cloud to be able to identify threats and malware, understand what that malware does to a detailed level. And, where we've seen this before, where is it potentially going? How do we protect against it? Something that typically you would need, four to five headcount in your security operations center to do, we're using this as an assist to us. So that's why it's a virtual analyst. It's really a bot, if you will, something that can actually-- >> So it's an enabling opportunity for the customers. So is this virtual assistant built into the box. What does that do, virtual analyst. >> So the virtual analyst is able to, sit on premises. So it's localized learning, collect threats to understand the nature of those threats, to be able to look at the needles of the needles, if you will, make sense of that and then automatically generate reports based off of that. So it's really an assist tool that a network admin or a security analyst was able to pick up and virtually save hours and hours of time of resources. >> So, if you look at the history of like our technology industry from a personalization standpoint, AI and data, whether you're a media business, personalization is ultimately the result of good data AI. So personalization for an analyst, would be how not to screw up their job. (laughs) One level. The other one is to be proactive on being more offensive. And then third collaboration with others. So, you starting to see that kind of picture form. What's your reaction to that? >> I think it's great. There's stepping stones that we have to go through. The collaboration is not always easy. I'm very familiar with this. I mean I was, with the Cyber Threat Alliance since day one, I head up and work with our Global Threat Alliances. There's always good intentions, there's problems that can be created and obviously you have things like PII now and data privacy and all these little hurdles they have to come over. But when it works right together, this is the way to do it. It's the same thing with, you talked about the data naturally when he started building up IT stacks, you have silos of data, but ultimately those silos need to be connected from different departments. They need to integrate a collaborate. It's the same thing that we're seeing from the security front now as well. >> You guys have proven the model of FortiGuard that the more you can see, the more visibility you can see and more access to the data in real time or anytime scale, the better the opportunity. So I got to take that to the next level. What you guys are doing, congratulations. But now the customer. How do I team up with, if I'm a customer with other customers because the bad guys are teaming up. So the teaming up is now a real dynamic that companies are deploying. How are you guys looking at that? How is FortiGuard helping that? Is it through services? Is it through the products like virtual assistant? Virtual FortiAI? >> So you can think of this. I always make it an analogy to the human immune system. Artificial neural networks are built off of neural nets. If I have a problem and an infection, say on one hand, the rest of the body should be aware of that. That's collaboration from node to node. Blood cells to blood cells, if you will. It's the same thing with employees. If a network admin sees a potential problem, they should be able to go and talk to the security admin, who can go in, log into an appliance and create a proper response to that. This is what we're doing in the security fabric to empower the customer. So the customer doesn't have to always do this and have the humans actively doing those cycles. I mean, this is the integration. The orchestration is the big piece of what we're doing. So security orchestration between devices, that's taking that gap out from the human to human, walking over with a piece of paper to another or whatever it is. That's one of the key points that we're doing within the actual security fabric. >> So that's why silos is problematic. Because you can't get that impact. >> And it also creates a lag time. We have a need for speed nowadays. Threats are moving incredibly fast. I think we've talked about this on previous episodes with swarm technology, offensive automation, the weaponization of artificial intelligence. So it becomes critically important to have that quick response and silos, really create barriers of course, and make it slower to respond. >> Okay Derek, so I got to ask you, it's kind of like, I don't want to say it sounds like sports, but it's, what's the state of the art in the attack vectors coming in. What are you guys seeing as some of the best of breed tax that people should really be paying attention to? They may, may not have fortified down. What are SOCs looking at and what are security pros focused on right now in terms of the state of the art. >> So the things that keep people up at night. We follow this in our Threat Landscape Report. Obviously we just released our key four one with FortiGuard Labs. We're still seeing the same culprits. This is the same story we talked about a lot of times. Things like, it used to be a EternalBlue and now BlueKeep, these vulnerabilities that are nothing new but still pose big problems. We're still seeing that exposed on a lot of networks. Targeted ransom attacks, as I was saying earlier. We've seen the shift or evolution from ransomware from day to day, like, pay us three or $400, we'll give you access to your data back to going after targeted accounts, high revenue business streams. So, low volume, high risk. That's the trend that we're starting to see as well. And this is what I talk about for trying to find that needle in the haystack. This is again, why it's important to have eyes on that. >> Well you guys are really advanced and you guys doing great work, so congratulations. I got to ask you to kind of like, the spectrum of IT. You've got a lot of people in the high end, financial services, healthcare, they're regulated, they got all kinds of challenges. But as IT and the enterprise starts to get woke to the fact that everyone's vulnerable. I've heard people say, well, I'm good. I got a small little to manage, I'm only a hundred million dollar business. All I do is manufacturing. I don't really have any IP. So what are they going to steal? So that's kind of a naive approach. The answer is, what? Your operations and ransomware, there's a zillion ways to get taken down. How do you respond to that. >> Yeah, absolutely. Going after the crown jewels, what hurts? So it might not be a patent or intellectual property. Again, the things that matter to these businesses, how they operate day to day. The obvious examples, what we just talked about with revenue streams and then there's other indirect problems too. Obviously, if that infrastructure of a legitimate organization is taken over and it's used as a botnet and an orchestrated denial-of-service attack to take down other organizations, that's going to have huge implications. >> And they won't even know it. >> Right, in terms of brand damage, has legal implications as well that happened. This is going even down to the basics with consumers, thinking that, they're not under attack, but at the end of the day, what matters to them is their identity. Identity theft. But this is on another level when it comes to things to-- >> There's all kinds of things to deal with. There's, so much more advanced on the attacker side. All right, so I got to ask you a final question. I'm a business. You're a pro. You guys are doing great work. What do I do, what's my strategy? How would you advise me? How do I get my act together? I'm working the mall every day. I'm trying my best. I'm peddling as fast as I can. I'm overloaded. What do I do? How do I go the next step? >> So look for security solutions that are the assist model like I said. There's never ever going to be a universal silver bullet to security. We all know this. But there are a lot of things that can help up to that 90%, 95% secure. So depending on the nature of the threats, having a first detection first, that's always the most important. See what's on your network. This is things where SIM technology, sandboxing technology has really come into play. Once you have those detections, how can you actually take action? So look for a integration. Really have a look at your security solutions to see if you have the integration piece. Orchestration and integration is next after detection. Finally from there having a proper channel, are there services you looked at for managed incident response as an example. Education and cyber hygiene are always key. These are free things that I push on everybody. I mean we release weekly threat intelligence briefs. We're doing our quarterly Threat Landscape Reports. We have something called threat signals. So it's FortiGuard response to breaking industry events. I think that's key-- >> Hygiene seems to come up over and over as the, that's the foundational bedrock of security. >> And then, as I said, ultimately, where we're heading with this is the AI solution model. And so that's something, again that I think-- >> One final question since it's just popped into my head. I wanted, and that last one. But I wanted to bring it up since you kind of were, we're getting at it. I know you guys are very sensitive to this one topic cause you live it every day. But the notion of time and time elapsed is a huge concern because you got to know, it's not if it's when. So the factor of time is a huge variable in all kinds of impact. Positive and negative. How do you talk about time and the notion of time elapsing. >> That's great question. So there's many ways to stage that. I'll try to simplify it. So number one, if we're talking about breaches, time is money. So the dwell time. The longer that a threat sits on a network and it's not cleaned up, the more damage is going to be done. And we think of the ransom attacks, denial-of-service, revenue streams being down. So that's the incident response problem. So time is very important to detect and respond. So that's one aspect of that. The other aspect of time is with machine learning as well. This is something that people don't always think about. They think that, artificial intelligence solutions can be popped up overnight and within a couple of weeks they're going to be accurate. It's not the case. Machines learn like humans too. It takes time to do that. It takes processing power. Anybody can get that nowadays, data, most people can get that. But time is critical to that. It's a fascinating conversation. There's many different avenues of time that we can talk about. Time to detect is also really important as well, again. >> Let's do it, let's do a whole segment on that, in our studio, I'll follow up on that. I think it's a huge topic, I hear about all the time. And since it's a little bit elusive, but it kind of focuses your energy on, wait, what's going on here? I'm not reacting. (laughs) Time's a huge issue. >> I refer to it as a latency. I mean, latency is a key issue in cybersecurity, just like it is in the stock exchange. >> I mean, one of the things I've been talking about with folks here, just kind of in fun conversation is, don't be playing defense all the time. If you have a good time latency, you going to actually be a little bit offensive. Why not take a little bit more offense. Why play defense the whole time. So again, you're starting to see this kind of mentality not being, just an IT, we've got to cover, okay, respond, no, hold on the ballgame. >> That comes back to the sports analogy again. >> Got to have a good offense. They must cross offense. Derek, thanks so much. Quick plug for you, FortiGuard, share with the folks what you guys are up to, what's new, what's the plug. >> So FortiGuard Labs, so we're continuing to expand. Obviously we're focused on, as I said, adding all of the customer protection first and foremost. But beyond that, we're doing great things in industry. So we're working actively with law enforcement, with Interpol, Cyber Threat Alliance, with The World Economic Forum and the Center for Cyber Security. There's a lot more of these collaboration, key stakeholders. You talked about the human to human before. We're really setting the pioneering of setting that world stage. I think that is, so, it's really exciting to me. It's a lot of good industry initiatives. I think it's impactful. We're going to see an impact. The whole goal is we're trying to slow the offense down, the offense being the cyber criminals. So there's more coming on that end. There's going to be protection, heat shields out there. You guys are doing a good job. It's only going to be more important than ever before. So, first of all, great journey for your company. Closed a year ago. Half a 1,000,000,000. Roughly give or take 60. Congratulations. Thank you. Big accomplishments. You guys were taken out right in the growth phase. Now at Palo Alto Networks, which we've been following, you know, very careful. You got a new CMO over there, Jean English? No, we're very well. We're very bullish on Palo Alto. Even though that the on premise transitions happening cloud. You guys are well positioned. How's things going things are going fantastic. We're investing a lot in the next Gen security business across the board, as mentioned Prisma Cloud is big business. And then on the other side, which is what I'm part of the cortex family focused on the Security operations center and the efficiencies That's fantastic and, ah, lot off product innovations, investment and the customer pull from an operations perspective. So very excited. You guys had a big announcement on Monday, and then yesterday was the earnings, which really kind of points to the trend that we're seeing, which is the wave to the cloud, which you're well positioned for this transition going on. I want to get to the news first. Then we get into some of the macro industry questions you guys announced the X ore, which is redefining orchestration. Yes. What is this about? What's this news about? Tell us. >> So this news is about Mr was acquired about a year ago as well. This is taking that Mr Platform and expanding it on, expanding it to include a very core piece, which is Intel management. If you look at a traditional saw, what has happened is soccer teams have had the same dead and over the last few years acquired a sword platform such as a mystery security orchestration, automation and response platform. But the Edge Intel team has always been still separate the threat Intel feeds that came in with separate. With this, we are expanding the power of automation and applying doc to the threat intelligence as well. That is, thread intelligence, current state of the art right now. So the current state of the art of threat intelligence is are the larger organizations typically subscribe to a lot of faith, feeds open source feeds and aggregate them. But the challenge is to aggregate them the sit in a repository and nobody knows what to do with them. So the operationalization of those feeds is completely missing. >> So basically, that is going to have data pile. Corpus is sitting there. No one touches it, and then everyone has to. It's a heavy lift. It's a heavy lift, and nobody knows. Cisco sees the value coming out of it. How do you proactively hunt using those? How do you put them to protecting proactively to explain cortex X, or what is it? And what's the value? So the cortex X or as a platform. There are four core pieces, three off which for the core tenants of the misto since the big one is automation and orchestration. So today we roughly integrate with close to 400 different products security and I t products. Why are the FBI on let customers build these work flows come out of the box with close to 80 or 90 different workloads. The idea of these workloads is being able to connect to one product for the data go to another taken action there Automation, orchestration builds a visual book second s case management and this is very critical, right? I mean, if you look at the process side of security, we have never focused as an industry and the process and the human side of security. So how do you make sure every security alert on the process the case management escalation sl A's are all managed. So that's a second piece off cortex. Third collaboration. One of the core tenants of Mr Waas. We heard from customers that analysts do not talk to each other effectively on when they do. Nobody captures that knowledge. So the misto has an inbuilt boardroom which now Cortex X or has the collaboration war room on that is now available to be able to chat among analysts. But not only that charged with the board take actions. The fourth piece, which is the new expanded platform, is the personal management to be able to now use the power of orchestration, automation collaboration, all for threat intelligence feeds as well. Not only the alerts >> so and so you're adding in the threat. Intelligence feeds, yes. So is that visualize ai on the machine Learning on that? How is that being process in real time? How does that on demand work for that fills. So the biggest piece is applying the automation and intelligence to automatically score that on being able to customize the scoring the customer's needs. Customized confidence score perfect. And once you have the high fidelity indicators automatically go block them as an example. If you get a very high fidelity IOC from FBI that this particular domain is the militias domain, you would want to block that in. Your firewall is executed immediately, and that is not happening today. That is the core, and that's because of the constraint is I don't know the data the way we don't know the data and it's manual. Some human needs to review it. Some human needs to go just not being surfaced, just not. So let's get back into some of the human piece. I love the collaboration piece. One of things that I hear all the time in my cube interviews across all the hundreds of events we go to is the human component you mentioned. Yes, people have burnt out. I mean, like the security guys. I mean, the joke was CIOs have good days once in a while, CSOs don't have any good days, and it's kind of a job board pejorative to that. But that's the reality. Is that it works? Yes. We actually okay, if you have another job. Talking of jokes, we have this. Which is what do you call and overwork security analyst. A security analyst, because every one of them >>is over word. >>So this is a huge thing. So, like the ai and some of the predictive analytics trend Is tourist personalization towards the analyst Exactly. This is a trend that we're seeing. What's your view on this? What? You're absolutely We're seeing that trend which is How do you make sure analyst gets to see the data they're supposed to see at the right time? Right. So there's one aspect is what do you bring up to the analyst? What is relevant and you bring it up at the right time to be able to use it. Respond with that. So that comes in one from an ML perspective and machine learning. And our cortex. XDR suite of products actually does a fantastic job of bringing very rich data to the analyst at the right time. And then the second is, can we help analyst respond to it? Can we take the repetitive work away from them with a playbook approach? And that's what the cortex platform brings to that. I love to riff on some future scenarios kind of. I won't say sci fi, but I got to roll a little bit of a future to me. I think security has to get to like a multi player gaming environment because imagine like a first person shooter game, you know where or a collaborative game where it's fun. Because once you start that collaboration, yes, then you're gonna have some are oi around. I saw that already. Don't waste your time or you get to know people. So sharing has been a big part? Yes. How soon do you think we're gonna get to an environment where I won't say like gaming? But that notion of a headset on I got some data. I know you are your reputation. I think your armor, you're you're certifications. Metaphorically putting. I think way have a lot of these aspects and I think it's a very critical point. You mentioned right one of the things which we call the virtual war room and like sex or I was pointing out the fact that you can have analysts sit in front of a collaboration war room not only charge for the appears but charged with a boat to go take care of. This is equivalent to remember that matrix movie plugging and says, you know how to fly this helicopter data and now I do. That's exactly what it is. I think we need to point move to a point where, no matter what the security tool is what your endpoint is, you should not have to learn every endpoint every time the normalization off, running those commands via the collaboration War Room should be dead. I would say we're starting to see in some of the customers are topics or they're using the collaboration war room to run those commands intractably, I would say, though, there's a big challenge. Security vendors do not do a good job normalizing that data, and that is where we're trying to reach you. First of all, you get the award for bringing up a matrix quote in The Cube interview. So props to that. So you have blue teams. Red teams picked the pill. I mean, people are people picking their teams. You know what's what's going on. How do you see the whole Red Team Blue team thing happening? I think that's a really good stuff happening. In my opinion, John, what's going on is right now so far, if you see if I go back three years our adversaries were are committing. Then we started to see this trend off red teaming automation with beach automation and bunch of companies starting to >>do that >>with Cortex X or on similar products, we're starting to now automate the blue team side of things, which is how do you automatically respond how do you protect yourself? How do you put the response framework back there? I think the next day and I'm starting to see is these things coming together into a unified platform where the blue team and the team are part of the same umbrella. They're sharing the data. They're sharing the information on the threat Intel chair. So I see we are a very, very good part. Of course, the adversities. I'm not gonna sit idle like you said about the Dev ops mindset. Heavens, notion of knowledge coming your way and having sharing packages all baked out for you. She doesn't do the heavy lifting. That's really the problem. The data is a problem. So much demand so much off it. And you don't know what is good and what is not. Great. Great conversation again. The Matrix reference about your journey. You've been an entrepreneur and sold. You had a great exit again. Politics is world class blue chip company in the industry public going through a transition. What's it like from an entrepreneur now to the big company? What's the opportunity is amazing. I think journey has been very quick. One. We saw some crazy growth with the misto on. Even after the acquisition, it's been incredibly fast pace. It's very interesting lot of one of the doctors like, Hey, you must be no resting is like, No, the journey is amazing. I think he s Polito Networks fundamentally believe that. We need to know where it really, really fast to keep the adversaries out on. But that's been the journey. Um, and we have accelerated, in fact, some of our product plans that we hard as a start up on delivering much faster. So the journey has been incredible, and we have been seeing that growth Will they picked you guys write up? There's no vesting interesting going on when you guys were on the uphill on the upslope growth and certainly relevance for Palo Alto. So clearly, you know, you haven't fun. People vested arrest when they checked out, You guys look like you're doing good. So I got to ask you the question that when you started, what was the original mission? Where is it now? I mean this Is there any deviation? What's been the kind? Of course you know, this is very, very relevant questions. It's very interesting. Right after the acquisition, we went and looked at a pitch deck, which we presented overseas in mid 2015. Believe it or not, the mission has not changed, not changing iron. It had the same competent off. How do you make the life off a security person? A security analyst? Easy. It's all the same mission by automating more by applying AI and learning to help them further by letting them collaborate. All the aspects off case management process, collaboration, automation. It's not changed. That's actually very powerful, because if you're on the same mission, of course you're adding more and more capabilities. But we're still on the same path on going on that. So every company's got their own little nuanced. Moore's Law for Intel. What made you guys successful was that the culture of Dev ops? It sounds like you guys had a certain either it was cut in grain. I think I would say, by the way, making things easy. But you got to do it. You got to stay the course. What was that? I think that's a fundamental cultural feature. Yeah, there's one thing really stand by, and I actually tweeted about a few weeks ago, this which is every idea, is as good as good as its execution. So there's two things between really focus on which is customer focused on. We were really, really portable about customer needs to get the product needs to use the product, customer focus and execution. As we heard the customers loud and clear, every small better. And that's what we also did. You guys have this agile mindset as well, absolutely agile mindset and the development that comes with the customer focus because way kind of these micro payments customer wants this like, why do they want this? What is the end goal? Attributed learner. Move on to make a decision making line was on Web services Way debate argue align! Go Then go. And then once you said we see great success story again Startup right out of the gate 2015. It's the Cube's live coverage. Four days of action. I'm John Furrier with my co host, Dave Vellante. Stew Minimum is in the house. We've been really interview all the thought. Leads all the action here in the DEV. Net zone of Cisco. We're here with Susie Wee, who's the senior vice president, chief technology officer and general manager of Cisco's DEV. Net and C X ecosystem success. Susie, great to see you again, Thanks to you. With our third year we've been we've been watching the growth of definite explode and definite create a separate event for developers. Great to see you. >>Great to see you. Great to be here. >>So how does it feel to be on a wave of success? You've had quite an impact in the industry, and I think the biggest story that's going on in the industry is the role of developers. You guys have embraced that four years ago, brought it all together and really just been marching to the cadence of just humble training, education and programming, all the Cisco products enabling what it looks like to be the future of Cisco. >>Yeah, I mean, it's it's humbling, t So you know what's been really great? It's really all about our community. And, you know, I mean, you guys have jumped in, been with us on this journey. You've seen it like all around us in terms of how it's progressed. But what's interesting is that, you know, networkers the software developers, the Dev Ops pros that people who are coming into definite really progressing, they're getting to the next level. And then we have more and more new people coming in. And what happens is the technology keeps advancing right. So networking, security going toe intent based networking, multi domain. How do you integrate these things? Cognitive collaboration. I o t an edge, you know, edge computing. As all of this comes together, you get to a really interesting place. But what happens is we have to think about I t department networking departments like how do people use this to their advantage? Right. So there's actually users of people who install and run these things and how do they make that available and actually get a business advantage out of that infrastructure? That's what this is all about. >>And the big scene. Wendy on the opening keynote, kicked off before David came on. She had a slide that I thought encapsulate what I think the future of all business and you guys have been on and on and on, a reference that it was people in communities, business model and business operations almost like a three legged stool. You've been on this because your team Michael was on the Cube just now said people have been in their careers on Cisco. But Cisco is betting the business on the people, that ecosystem, it's developers. CC III is the certifications. This dynamic of the role of the people is critical, >>and they're driving >>the change >>it is. And you know what was tremendous about Cisco's business model and how Cisco was founded. So this was pre me, you know, and it's just the brilliance of the early folks is like Cisco made this router, you know? It was a little start up. It was like five people, right? And then it started flying off the shelf in the mid eighties in late eighties when the Internet started taking off, and then the way they scale that out was by growing the community, they didn't say We're going to hire people around the world to install these networks. We're gonna create a community of professionals who can go around and install these networks. And then we're going to create a partner ecosystem of partners who are going to build businesses around this, installing networks for customers. And so really, Cisco very early on, learn that we had to be very customer focused and build with an ecosystem of partners. And then we created Cisco Certification Program, and that started to take the people who are getting trained to do networking and give them certifications. And then they were able to get jobs in customers and partners and build their careers. And so now we move that to today, and we're continuing with that philosophy and doubling down. It's about them, except there's a shift in technology. So the network has changed. It's not the same old network like now. There's new capabilities that require software. It requires dev ops. It requires applications to hit the infrastructure it requires. I T and Infrastructure to solve business problems. But we need to bring the people along and doing that, and that is absolutely what we've been about. >>I said in my breaking analysis there were there were many things that helped Cisco rise with the three things like pointed out where the bet on I p, the M and A and then I was too narrow. I liked how you describe it as the community, but really talking about the Army of trained engineers that were advocates. And you're extending that to the partner ecosystem. What's interesting about watching this rise over the faster uses? Not only transformation of Cisco from hardware to software and now even business transformation is you see, I t go from a cost center to a profit center, but you're sort of following that track. I don't know if you're leading it are following it sort of incompetent what's going on. And, >>you know, I would say >>that we're doing both because, uh, obviously we're listening to customers and partners all the time to see what do you need? So we're listening, and that would make us leading as we're sorry. Following is >>we're >>listening and yet we're creating technology to enable them to do these new things right? So there's a reason that you can think about the network to be solving business problems. It's because we made the networking programmable and based on software. If we didn't make it software, it would still be running the old way. And it wouldn't be able to play in a Dev ops loop or be automated or anything there. So I would say that it's very combined. But Cisco takes a holistic approach right back there. We have an I T managers forum where there are people who are trying to say, Hey, you know, I've been leading technology teams in I T. But I need to learn how to talk to the business, right? So there's a transformation that needs to happen, which is okay, The technologist networkers I t folks themselves need to learn about software. But then also, these folks and their managers need to be able to talk to the business and think differently. So take some design thinking. Think about what are the business stakeholders problems where customers problems, how can I make my technology work for them? So we really have a lot going on Teoh building the kind of success of our ecosystem. >>Yeah, it's interesting you mentioned technology shift, and that's causing a lot of change is actually how people are certified business models. And it's interesting. When we were chatting years ago, Dev. Ops was actually out there. The hyper scales around you saw it evolving was pretty clear to a lot of the insiders. That's Dev Ops. Infrastructure is code. Then you kicked on something where programmable networks I heard this week, and this is kind of again goes to the next level and kind of connect the dots. Biz Dev. Ops. So the AB dynamics guys, look at this as OK. So this agile attitude yes, has been on for a while. Could you comment? I think >>a lot of people that >>are looking at Cisco trying to understand its evolution where it's gonna go >>yeah, >>is rooted in years ago. A shift in thinking, yes, and it's an agile It's a dev ops mindset, >>yes, but >>the Dev ops notion from whether it's pure Dev ops, cloud native or Dev ops or Biz Dev ops >>for what's next? So this is a It's been around for a while. You just share your Yeah, Absolutely. So >>I have a slide and we don't show slides here, which is a good thing. But it was called it the hamburger slide. So the hamburger slide, where there would be infrastructure and the applications. And then there's this other layer appear business, you know. And basically, what happens is the infrastructure became programmable, so as opposed to the infrastructure and the applications being separate, the I T teams did the infrastructure of the app Dev did. The businesses did the APS. Then now that the infrastructure's family can get into a dev ops workflow. So for cloud applications, the APS and the infrastructure can really mix. And now the network is programmable. So there's Net Dev ops. And it's not just compute that can get into Dev ops. But you know, the network can too. But then, now that business layer can flow into this. And so what happens is once again, you could say that cloud enables business, right? And so, if you know, a business is trying to say, how do I compete like a retail store? How my completing with a cloud competitors. Well, you have to embrace it. Take your traditional infrastructure, your customer data your stores, but then mix that with cloud offerings. That's a huge transformation that needs to happen. But now there's even more capabilities. As you're saying, Hey, I'm like a coffee shop and I'm rolling out all of these stores. How do I make sure my business applications get there? How do I get customer intelligence and business intelligence together so my workers can serve my customers with the right knowledge and information they need so you can actually use the infrastructure and APS as an advantage in how you serve your business? And you wouldn't even be able to do those things if you didn't know about the technology. So I would say that there's like a workforce trend where technology is enabling business and it can grow your business in different ways. But we need to make sure that we can express that because the technologist doesn't usually talk in terms of the business. But that's where all the value >>on the application has always been. That point of business value in connection to the business when the APP is the infrastructure has been removed from that now that the infrastructure's becoming programmable. It's embedded into that application, and developers can now add value on top of it. I mean, the striking thing to me was just behind us, to seeing a number of your customers lining up to learn how to code in Python. And then I o t was off the charts. And I've always been saying that Look at the edge is going to be one by developers E. I think you really got that right. I'm curious as to why you think just really is the one company in a large, established player. That is, I think, figured it out that I've said that many have tried throwing money at the problem, reaching out to developers fallen flat. I mean, even very successful software companies were struggling. Why do you think Cisco has had successes? Is a culture is at the leverage of that certification and community that you talked about earlier? >>Yeah, it's while it's really hard to say, like one reason why, because these air tricky things, like so taking on a new business strategy, getting everybody aligned in a big company, even in a little company, is hard, but it takes like everybody pushing towards the direction and what happens is different. People get it at different times. So obviously with Dev net, we're trying to push something along. The CEO Chuck Robbins. He got it and he was pushing it. And then the businesses and product teams. Some of them had a P I first, and some of them did not. But now more and more on almost all of them do. Now. All the products have AP eyes and they're getting more AP I first and now what we're doing is aligning AP eyes across the portfolio. You need to get your sales teams to understand and to engage. Like the regions. We have people in Italy who are engaging with the Italian community. We have our seas around the world that are basically engaging the people in each of their countries to evangelize it in tow, work with customers and partners in their local language is using this material to get them on board. So, you know, when we started, Definite Way had different ways we could take it. No one defined a developer program for a company like Cisco before, like a networking company, but we actually didn't do it by saying, Oh, we're only gonna talk to application developers and ignore those old networkers We said we're going to make them core and bring them along and bring in the captives and bring them together. I wouldn't say we're gonna, like, forget about the old Cisco products We said we're gonna work with them as they add AP eyes and make that better. We're gonna ignore our sales guys and the ones that we're going to bring them along and make them our evangelists and advocates to work with the region. So we kind of use the whole fabric along with it and just I kind of gained. The community >>recognized the appetite for building, and some people are like, >>I'm going to jump in and give this a try because I think it's important and something like, I'm gonna wait and see and they're like, Oh, it's something now, Okay, now I'll jump in and we're like, >>That's right, >>you're totally We do a lot of Cuban. It is many different events here at Cisco over the years. It's interesting to see when people get in and you can see it when their eyes pop up. Oh, I get it. It is a progression of whether they're orientation, what their background is. But it seems to me the early people who click it on it is our systems thinkers. Most of the techies, they're systems systems, folks. Yeah, they see as a system not as one thing. Yes, As you said, it's not just absent infrastructure. So a lot of the system guys get it first. And then on the business side, they see it from more of the making money. So you see the impact of the application changing the business model. It's a retail app or whatever they get it. That that's gonna be the future. Yeah, it depends on where you're coming from. >>It does. It does. And what's interesting is to >>see how this community has evolved and actually, how we've evolved to be able to support people along the way. So as you remember, when you were first year, it was really some techies who realized they needed to learn something new. So is about learning about software and AP eyes. And then we evolved. It became about coding. So how do we use a definite automation exchange in code exchange to use a software based model to build community code around networking use cases because they wanted to use it and get it into use cases. And then now we have people are like, Okay, I'm doing it, I get it. But I can't get my business leaders to understand. So now we're actually helping them express the business case and create use cases that solve business problems more directly, so >>your access to customer success >>and customer success. So now explain that piece. What is that? How >>to be successful at training is everything >>customer direction. What is that piece? So s >>o me and my team were Cisco employees, and sometimes I mean, this doesn't get represented, but we move around the York, so you know, as different things change. And so there's a recent move where it has been in the engineering team. I've now moved into the customer experience organization. We're doing a transformation like a customer experience, customer success, transformation for Cisco and so you know, as we think about that. Well, first of all, Cisco's always been customer oriented, But what does this mean in a world of software in world of partners? ecosystems with the products and opportunities we have now. And so, as we're gearing towards this kind of customer success and customer experience model, is that, you know, they're trying to do a transformation, and it's actually very similar to what Dev Net has already done, which is specifically, let's see. So when you engage with a company on new technology, we can say Okay, come here to the DEV Net Zone and learn about the AP eyes, you know. But as you're working with a customer and you say, Hey, you know you're from the customer, let's go on this journey together. Did you know that we have AP eyes? Let's learn about AP eyes. >>And did you know that >>this product performs this function? But it also has AP eyes. So let's teach you about those. Then you learn a different aspect of the product that you might not have thought about before because you're like, Oh, it can be a platform and then you say, Hey, and you know you need to solve automation. This can be used to solve automation, and so then you're like, Oh, I'm thinking about automation, but how do I do it? so you can't have just one product. That's >>that's a progression that depends on what the customer's orientation is, whether environment looks like >>so it >>means, like start to evolve and think about their problem. Actually, their problem is automation. Their problem is not using this product right. They're trying to solve a bigger product and hopefully this is a bigger business problem or an automation problem. And this product is a piece of the puzzle into it. So we want to kind of engage in the full discussion from what is your need, an automation and then work backwards toe like, How can this product help? And so it's kind of like turning things upside down and ensuring the customer uses. And, you know, we understand their business problem. We're helping them solve it. And this is how these products can play a role in helping you achieve that >>in every business is looking at that from the corner office. They all want to drive automation into their business. They're looking at okay, if the economy turns out more automation, whether it's you know, you see an R P. A takeoff is the cloud is supporting that, Yeah, it's a big trend >>is huge, and it's, you know, and actually moving to an automation infrastructure. It's not like buy a new product and you've automated and you're done. It's actually very hard, and it requires an architectural shift. It means, like I'm going to start to build telemetry, analyze data and get insights from it. Well, if you don't have that implemented somewhere, then you need to architect for them. And then once you start building into that and seeing dashboards and then connecting that into other business APS, then you start to go further and further so every step along the way, we want to get them closer to an automation architecture. But that takes work, >>and it's cultural as well as people hear automation. If it well, that's my job and so >>little >>education. And then once they see it, Oh, you mean I could get rid of all these things I don't like to do, and I can do this instead. Then they really lean in and create new value. >>Yeah, So what we're getting at is this, like, really interesting. I'll call it a new technology trend of looking at kind of automation, plus Ai together, right? And so I've been talking about it out here in some places, which is now we've been talking about automation. We've been talking about AI. You look at these together. There's a set of people who are like, Let's think about what automation means. It could mean Oh my gosh, someone's going to take my job away. I don't need people anymore That would be called like autonomous. And there's some things that you do want to make autonomous and work themselves. But then you can also look at kind of assisting humans. Right? So assisting like, what are you trying to do? Roll out configurations across different places and get them set up where we can automate that and you can assist a human? And being able to do it on this next age is augmenting humans. What is there that a person really couldn't do that they can do now in a night? Example of that is, you know, you take a look at threat intelligence and security going around the world. Cisco has products around the world that are looking for security threats. You put those together, you can see a threat before it comes to a customer environment and say, Hey, we found this threat. We better shut it down over in your system to make sure you're blocked and protected from it. You've augmented human capability, you know, using automation and AI. >>You know, one of the things a lot of companies do is they focus on a big wave and they focus on it. They get on that new wave. Cisco's on a lot of different ways. You got I, O. T. And Security, which you were talking about. This kubernetes and Cloud native is like all these collaboration. They're all their own big waves coming. So I have to ask you because you've been so successful, definite and then a great leader in the industry with all your experience. What's your vision as this comes in? Because Cisco is that one of the benefits uniquely positioned with all the complexity, all the opportunities to the Dev ops, like across the board up and down the stack, these waves are coming. It's not just one. You have a focus on kubernetes. You got a focus on security. There's all these different big things that you guys are working on. What's your vision >>on how >>this all plays out >>like so while there's different, there's different things going on kubernetes and cloud. You know, we're doing networking. What's going on in I O. T and Edge Computing and the Future of Cognitive Collaboration and AI and ML, And you know all of this kind of thing a security I don't actually view them as separate. Actually view them is all part of a bigger system, right? They're part of a platform that's trying to solve a bigger problem, >>and the secret is AP ice. So it's actually a >>combination of architecture in AP eyes and how this works is a fabric together and you know there's benefit. Like if you're trying to do security, sure, you can use security products to do security. But why don't you also use network segmentation to do security, like literally segment out pieces of the network and, you know, data and APS that should not be talking to other places and use that for security? So, you know, I kind of view it is all working together towards a bigger architecture because you're using Ap eyes. You can start to put these things together and start to apply policies across these different domains. So this kind of whole new area, another new technology trend, is looking at multi domain opportunities and cross architecture. So that's really key >>in the data that you get out of that as well, right? Data and metadata that you can analyze and then act upon. Yes, Dr. Inside >>multi domain, multi clouds Having >>data models, right? Look at how do you take, you know, so that all these different systems are adding up to a everything you need to create data models that these different applications can kind of pour into >>that used to be locked inside of a box. Sitting in >>these types of application would have its own >>kind of model, But we're really all working towards the bigger thing in software that lets you down in >>the silicon is a great thing to get so looking One coming, Yes, moving from the box of the chip. Yeah, not a bad strategy. >>Super interesting. So, yeah, >>if you look at, you know, where are the bottlenecks in this? And this is where you need to rethink what your business strategy is. And it's just like you down in the optics down at that layer is where the big opportunities are. And if we can differentiate and provide value in that space, then that's what we've done. We >>were riffing the other night in the taxi came in I said, The day of Digital and digital, which is the Internet's all digital. Now the business model is the killer app, and we're just more of a provocative statement like, What are you trying to dio with that? What all this is? What's the purpose of all this? >>Yeah, I >>have a business model that actually works. >>It is, But it is, Yeah, >>and what's interesting about the business model? Also, to think about that? It's not just your own business model. It's again. That's where that's why I called our new group ecosystem success. It's what you do, you know. And there's this whole model of success, meaning you your customer, your supply chain up above you and then how you deliver. But it's east west now, too, right? It's like, How does your innovation work with your partner's innovation? Another area that and how did this all happen together? Like, how do you take trends in security and advances there and, you know, in workforce and people. And as you take a look at, you know, everything that's happening in cloud and then intersect so that we're all successful >>and it's enabled by what you're saying before automation and AI obviously supported by Cloud AP eyes and data across that system that you guys were talking >>about, I think that I think the bumper sticker for Cisco's Cisco connects businesses because that's really what you're doing. >>There we go way >>shut up for the 1st 500 >>Yes, yes, yes. So yes. So some of the big news over here is that well, in this >>world of where the infrastructure becomes programmable. So what Cisco's had a long time is Cisco's sort of certification program. So we have ccn a Cisco Certified Network Associates. Si Si n Pi's CC III is the expert level, and that's been an industry standard for the last 26 years, and people have job roles. They've gotten promotions, they get recognized, their certified for delivering quality, and what we've introduced is the definite certifications. So, in addition to the engineering certifications or the software certifications and Devon, it's kind of growing to the next level. By so far, everybody who's been in here has been into definite because of their hearts and because they knew they had to learn anything. But now we're giving them a certification so they can be recognized as their efforts, and we're expanding Cisco certification to cover it. Now. This represents the move of engineering plus software together in your I T teams and together for your technology teams and the new certifications. Brought to you by Five9. >> Welcome back to theCUBE, Lisa Martin, with Stu Miniman, live in Orlando at Enterprise Connect 2019. This is day three of the event. Can you hear all of that buzz behind us? It's been a very full event. 6,500 or so attendees, 140 vendors here in the Exhibitor Hall. New products, new announcements, we're very excited, speaking of new announcements, to welcome for the first time to theCUBE the CEO of Poly, Joe Burton. Joe, welcome to theCUBE. >> Well thanks so much for having us, it's great. >> Our pleasure, so big news Plantronics, Polycom, rebranded as Poly this week. Big coming out part here, this is way more than a rebrand. Walk us through what you guys have just announced, and why this is so exciting for the industry? >> Well it really is an exciting time. An exciting time for all of us. About a year ago, to the day, we announced that Polycom and Plantronics were coming together as one company to provide a end-to-end set of end points for the entire UC industry. So no matter what cloud you're hooking to in the contact center, for unified communications, from the headset that rides on your body, to the desktop, to the huddle room, to the board room, we were going to provide every end point where the end user touches the Collaboration Cloud. Very, very exciting. We were really looking for the right name to take us into the future. And frankly, Plantronics is a wonderful name, but it's very 60s sounding. Formed in 1961 by a couple of airline pilots to build headsets. Polycom, also a very good name, but a little old. We were looking for something short, punchy, tight, that really talked about everything that we do. And we were thinking about going down the route of an entirely new word, going the whole way. And one day a brilliant person on the brand team walked in and said, we can do both. We can have our heritage, our history, and we can go a different direction. Poly, Greek word for many. So many kinds of communication, many people, the power of many. Many ways of interacting. You actually look at our new logo it looks very much like a Polycom speakerphone of the past, it looks like an airline propellor for Plantronics, but it's also three Ps. Plantronics and Polycom coming together to form Poly. >> Joe, I do love that because that iconic speakerphone, heck, I sold some of those back in the 90s when I worked for one of the telecommunications company. There's still one sitting in our conference room in our boss scenario office today. Plantronics, of course, so known for so many of the different devices over the year. So maybe give us a little bit as to the coming together of Plantronics and Polycom, now as Poly. What's that mean for the future as we talk proliferation in devices, the line between what consumers expect and the Enterprise Connect. That's something we've been talking about for a couple of decades now. So what is Poly, into the future? >> You bet. So you see all these amazing communications, cloud providers around. Everybody is innovating in the cloud, they want to provide this software as a service that can enable all these great communications. But at the end of the day all of that Collaboration Cloud, gets accessed through a set of devices. Every single device where the end user touches the Collaboration Cloud actually comes from Poly. Like I said, the headset, the video conferencing, the audio conferencing and beyond. So as Poly we're going to build every single device that you need to access the cloud with a management layer, where you can understand each and every device. Is it on, is it off? Firmware upgrades, security patches, but so much more. You can actually understand usage data you've never seen before. So literally, because we're writing on the person, we're in the conference room, or on the desktop, we're in the open office area. We're in a position where we can actually tell you, these devices are being utilized but not these. That corner of the building is too noisy for good collaboration. Figure out what's going on. Even though the laptops in building 32 are telling you that there's no network problem, at the ear, we're actually seeing packet loss, and here's what we think you should do about it. So we think Poly literally brings something from the human perspective to the collaboration experience that just nobody else can do. >> We've heard a lot about the human element in it. Anytime we talk about emerging technologies, AI, ML, there's always that, oh the concerns about AI taking over jobs. But thematically, at this event, we've heard that it's got to be machines and humans augmenting. Whether we're talking about call center and it's agent delivery, but that human element, that relationship point, that voice, is really resounding at this event. It's absolutely hot again, still critical, whatever you want to call it. >> You're absolutely right. So what we're seeing very much when we look at AI and ML in our devices we're not in anyway seeing something that takes a job as much as helps you be your best self. What if you could be on your game, in the zone, instead of an hour or two a day but two, three, four times that much? And we think with some of the coaching we can do, using some of these AI and ML techniques. Through our devices, we can just help you be the best you can be all the time. >> Joe, at this show, we know it's a complex ecosystem. Something that I heard over and over again though, in the keynotes, is you've got a lot of partnerships. I heard many companies talking about, oh, and here's Poly devices. Heard it in the Microsoft keynote. We're here in the Five9 booth, we understand the partnership there. Talk about some of those partnerships, some of the news that was announced beyond just the company rebranding. >> Absolutely. Partnerships are our life blood. The reason we can be a great partner to so many companies is because, frankly, we don't compete against them for the cloud. We said we're going to do the user experience, we're going to be the end point. The management of the end point. But we've announced a lot of exciting things. Of course, Microsoft's a great partner to us. Zoom, and others, are a great partner. We announced this week a partnership with Google around Google Voice where we're the first and only certified Google Voice set of phones, at this point. Great announcements with Amazon around Chime and Alexa for business. Both in our trio speakerphones but also in the headsets. So I can actually touch the button and access Alexa straight through the headsets as well. And then of course companies like Five9 that are just an amazing, amazing partner to us. They have such an incredible product. Our headsets are on the vast mass majority of their agents. And when we look ahead at some of the unique analytics that we can do out of our headsets, some of the things they're trying to do, we just see an unbeatable combination with so many of these companies. >> What have been some of the feedback that you've heard from some of your customers and partners? This week, with such big news coming out and you mentioned a big spectrum-- >> Yeah. >> Of very big partners. Tell us about some of the feedbacks that you're getting from customers. >> Well I have to say, it has really been a thrilling week. The rebranding of the company as Poly, we had done all the research, we thought it was the right thing to do, the right name, the right heritage, plus being fresh. But it has been just overwhelmingly, you nailed it. I think from our customers and partners just a real excitement that they knew that Plantronics and Polycom were a premier end point provider, maybe the premier. But to see us partnered with so many of the cloud providers, as the predominant partner they're just seeing us in a whole new light, it's fantastic. >> Joe, one of the things we've been looking at is how Omnichannel's been changing over time. We talked about this show used to be VoiceCon. >> Yup. >> And a few years ago voice was a little bit lower on people's radar, but today a lot of voice, a lot of video. Of course it plays right into your heritage at the company. I'd love to hear what you're hearing from your customers as to the trends of the importance of voice and the ever growing importance of video. >> I think you nailed it in many ways, Stu. I think everybody has figured out that if voice isn't perfect the collaboration session isn't perfect. Even in a video conferencing call, we can put up with the video pixelating a little bit, as long as the voice is excellent. If the voice goes down, you don't have a session. So voice has to be fantastic. The end point plays a huge part in that. Working very carefully with our partners to make sure voice is absolute, is just fantastic. One of the other things on video that I think is really interesting is, we are really moving to, I guess I would say, a post speeds and feeds world. A few years ago all we heard is, are you VGA, are you force F? To use old words. Are you 1080p, are you 4K? Our product that won best of show yesterday in the product category, the Polycom Studio, a brand new video product for The Huddle Room. Really fascinating. Incredible good video, dead simple to use. I've probably been involved in 60 or 100 demos down here in the booth and done dozens of briefings on it. Nobody has asked me, what's the resolution of the camera? (Stu chuckling) What codec does it use? We've moved into a world of, it looks excellent, tell me about ease of use, tell me about the training. So I really think we're moving to a different world with that consumer expectation you talked about earlier of don't really care about those specifications anymore, it has to just work. >> That's a theme also Joe that we've heard from every guest that we've had on, as well as on the main stage. That that's what consumers, we are so demanding, we are so empowered, we have all this information and we expect that, to transact business as simply as we do things if we're buying something on Amazon or downloading something from Spotify, that simplicity is key. People say, it just has to work. Not so easy to be able to deliver, but it sounds like what you're saying is, people in your booth are getting it and it's so obvious to them that some of those speeds and feeds they just don't matter because it's so effective. >> Well you're absolutely right, the only thing I would disagree on is how hard it is. It really is just a matter of pivoting the company. So this has been a huge part of the Poly story. A couple of years ago as we were starting this journey of Plantronics and then as we brought Polycom in to form Poly we've really turned it on it's head. I mean our product managers, our engineers, we've got them out there with users, we ask users, not leading questions, but just in your wildest dreams, how do you see this working? Show me how you would do this as a consumer and we'll add the absolute minimum pieces in to add enterprise reliability, enterprise security, privacy, et cetera, et cetera. But we're really starting from that end user perspective and absolutely delighting them. And then adding what IT wants as opposed to the other way around which is where I think this industry was stuck for 10 or 15 years. >> Alright. So Joe, as a public company, I'm not going to ask too much but if we look down the road what should we be looking now that you've got the full resources together, you've got the rebranding, what should we expect as industry watchers to see from Poly kind of the next six to 12 months? >> So I think you'll see three or four things. We've talked about it publicly before. Number one, you'll see us just finish refreshing the product portfolio so every single product has the Poly look, has the Poly name, very consumer friendly, consumer forward, a consumer forward design and simplicity. So, best products across the board on the hardware side. Incredible ability to manage the products where you can understand every single one of them and then bringing those analytics and AI type functionality to these products that make the user their best self. That don't do weird things for them, that are a little scary, but really, really, really just anticipate their needs, help them do exactly what they want and you'll see even deeper and more partnerships. We are a partner company, we're going to live and die by partnerships, and we're going to be the best at it. >> Well Joe thank you so much for joining Stu and me on theCUBE. Tell our viewers a little bit about the bank and also about what you do there. >> So first of all, a few words about myself: I'm 47 years old and am married with a lovely wife and two daughters. Probably they are watching me from Italy. >> (laughs) Hello! >> About my job, I've worked for Intesasanpaolo for 17 years, a lot of time. It's always fun, is a great job, is a great place to work for. Intesasanpaolo is now the biggest bank in Italy, and one of the top banks in Europe. We also have a business plan to help us to grow a little bit more and more to become the first digital bank in Europe. We also have a business plan for IT, of course. So Intesasanpaolo is now, for me, is a good place to work. It's a good bank in Italy. We do also a lot for social. We invest in social, and we give money back to the community and to Italy. It's very important for me. >> So talk a little bit about what your role is at the bank. >> I am the head of Cloud and Collaboration. In the past I led the data center infrastructure from mainframe to open system. Now I am the head of Cloud and Collaboration as told before. It's a very important role for me because Cloud and Collaboration are important topics for us, and we work a lot on them. About Cloud, we work on the strategy, we work on the integration platform to merge different functionalities. On the Collaboration, we are working on a modern workplace. >> So, Nicola, it's interesting to hear you talk about cloud. We're here at the Microsoft show. Microsoft plays across a lot of different areas. What's the relationship between the bank and Microsoft? >> Microsoft, obviously, is a big partner for us. We are a big customer for Microsoft. It's, I think, through Microsoft Cloud. In the last years, Microsoft has the biggest growing cloud that I've ever seen. What I can say, it's a very enterprise-ready cloud platform. It's easier to manage a foreign, big enterprise, like us. We are still using cloud-- When I talk about cloud, I think hybrid model. And we have important private cloud installation. We deliver 90% of our machine totally automatically through our private cloud. And we can also extend our data center on the public cloud in Asia. We have a connection between our data center and the Microsoft data center in a hybrid model. So it's an extension of the data center. We also deliver the 40%-- 45% of all our delivery operation are made through our private cloud portal. So it's an important investment that we did on cloud. >> We know data is very important to all companies, especially not only security, but how you can leverage data is important for financial institutions like yourself. You've mentioned a hybrid model. That's something we've been hearing from a lot of customers. We're here in the Cohesity booth, and I understand you're using them. Maybe talk a little about how you think about the data protection in a multi-cloud world. >> We started to use Cohesity some years ago. We were the first customer in Europe, and the first bank in the world. Very early adopter. Few words about Cohesity: Cohesity is a very smart company and very nice people to work with. So we started to work together to increase the functionalities that they provide, to be more enterprise ready. Now, speaking about the data, obviously for a bank, the data protection is one of the main points. And Cohesity helped us to do an easier process to manage data. We are working with them to increase the data protected with Cohesity as a secondary storage. We are looking also at new functionality that they are providing. It's the connection to the cloud. So I think they can help us, to enable us to use a little bit more of the cloud in that hybrid model. So enable the hybrid model of the cloud, can be easier for us, I think. >> One of the biggest companies-- One of the biggest challenges that so many companies face is staying innovative and staying ahead of the game. How do you and your team-- I know you said workplace productivity, collaboration are really important things for you. How do you keep your team working at the cutting edge? >> Nice question. I can speak about technical innovation, because in our technical department, the IT department, we work a lot on innovation. We have a model. We define a model for the age of innovation. It seems a contradiction, but we decided to invest in innovation. Initially we find some prosperous company. We have some connection in Sillicon Valley, with Italian and European investors, and this is why we became the first customer for Cohesity when Cohesity was so small. They had a great road map but they were very small. Like them, we also adopted Damonte it's a container as a surface platform. When we adopted last year, they were very small as well. But they are smart guys as well, nice company, good investor. The DNA of the company seems good. So we decided to adopt the technology. It's also an opportunity for my people, for the people of the bank, for the people of IT, to stay in touch with the innovative community of Sillicon Valley, of the investor. It's very important for them, because in the past, working IT in a bank wasn't so nice. So this is why we invest a lot in innovation, and this is why our people love to do that. >> Finally, you're here in the States for only a couple of days. You're heading back to Italy. At this conference, what has impressed you? What do you think you will take away from what you're learning here, what you're seeing, what you're hearing, and share with your colleagues back home? >> First of all, the relationships. I met a lot of people, a lot of business, other customers, a lot of banks, so I will have a lunch with another bank, big bank in Europe so we can exchange. We saw that we have the problems, the same path. We are all working in the same area. It's good, it's comfortable for us. The other point is we saw, with my colleagues here, we saw some nice innovative companies to work with. We are here live in San Francisco for the Cube's exclusive two day coverage of Cisco's inaugural event: DevNet Create. An extension of the core DevNet community founded three years ago by our next guest. I'm John Furrier with Peter Burris. Our next guest, Rick Tywoniak, Senior Director of Cisco DevNet, also the co founder with Susie Wee who was on yesterday. Congratulations on creating DevNet three years ago. >> Rick: Thanks John. >> Very successful. I said it's blowing up, I mean in a good way, doing great robust community and also creator of DevNet Create, Congratulations. >> Thanks, thanks John, appreciate it. >> So why DevNet Create? I mean just give us the quick why DevNet Create vs. DevNet, What's the difference? How should people look at those two events? >> So, DevNet Create is our event to reach out to a new community of developers. Typically an audience that may not have thought about Cisco in the past. may have thought of us as a hardware company doing routers and switching and we want to try to reach out to that new community to help them understand that Cisco has a great platform for them to develop on and there's great opportunity to work with Cisco. And so we want to get to that new audience. That's what the inaugural vision of DevNet Create is all about. >> Before we came on camera Peter asked you a question, you were getting rolling and we decide to wait. Go ahead ask the question. >> Why Cisco? >> Rick: Why Cisco? (John laughs) >> You know we were talking about, so there's a subset of developers; let's call them ISV, Independent Software Vendors, and when you think about the plethora of platforms out there, there's a lot of people that they can develop on. And so you've got to think about why Cisco. When I talk to developers a couple things: first of all you start with the platforms right? So is the technology cool and are the API's cool, and can you do something innovative with them, right? So you have Meraki location API's, you have Spark Collaboration API's, you have the networking API's right? And so the first thing we do is we start off with the technology and, you know, to be fair a lot of the developers, when you start talking about the technology that Cisco brings to market they weren't even aware. They just thought it was routering and switches, hardware. They weren't even aware that the network had API's that they can use, especially in the area of IOT. So educating the developers on what the technology is, is extremely important but it doesn't stop there. Because, okay it's cool technology but if I'm an ISV, eventually I need to make money so what can Cisco offer me that's unique and different and there's a couple of things that we do with inside DevNet which takes you sort of the partnership area. So if you're out there developing a software product and you integrate with our platforms and you develop some API's, the second thing that we also bring to our developers, who have companies usually, is introduction to the field and the channel, okay? So how do you ... >> John: So monetize? >> Yeah monetize this. We have one of this, so we help them monetize their app. And obviously it has to be a good app, it's got to be tested and certified and it has to have some customer traction but once you get customer traction, my group is also responsible for introducing them to the field and our channel organization to help them get out to market. And then we also have thirteen innovation centers throughout the world where you can do co-creation and get, even if you're early stage, get introduced to customers. Cisco's got a lot of customers in the enterprise, right? >> John: Right. >> We help, depending on where you are in the world, if you're in Latin America you can go to Brazil, if you're in Europe you can go to France and then England. You can get involved in these innovation centers and get out to the customer base and get opportunities. If you go from there, they get a lot of traction. Many times we'll put applications on the general price list, so our field and channel can actually sell those applications and get compensated. So now you're opening up, say if you're a small start up, and you want to take advantage of... You have to have a good application right? >> John: Right. It has to have the customers want it, but then you can start to leverage some of the field and the channel out there to get your application out to get bigger. >> Great, great explanation. Thanks for taking the time to lay that out there. My question for you is, we talked about this in our opening and today and in our wrap-up yesterday is: Cisco is a huge opportunity, I mean, you have network guys who are really great. They know the operations cold and it's known that not everyone has the operations skills >> Rick: Right! >> And DevOps has an ops piece, so this is a great direction for you, so we're both very complementary of that. Question is: what value does Cisco bring to the table because certainly, yeah, you've got monetization that's going to be great for the start ups. What value providing up the stack? Because you've got the networks, that's the crown jewel of the operations. Making it programmable. How is that valuable to the developer? >> Well, so, applications that are developed inside the enterprise have to run on the network. So everything you have or all the devices you have in an area of IOT, all have to run on the network so you start with that core sort of functionality that we provide and then you start adding the API's because all of the intelligence that works in the stuff that runs the network is now as exposed in an API layer. So now if you're a software developer inside an enterprise, taking advantage of those API's to have your application run more efficiently is the key, sort of sauce, that DevNet or Cisco provides through DevNet. You know, if you go back to the original vision of what we had: "So why did you start this thing" "And what was the vision?" So this idea of taking two groups that may have never talked to each other in the past. The networking professionals who really understood the network, software professionals inside an enterprise who really understand and build software. How do you bring them together and sort of create a community where those two are starting to understand what each other does, understand the skill levels that they have, work together, break down the silos, get out of their tribes, >> John: Um, Hmm >> Come together and in a DevOps environment how do you run software more efficiently? >> The Innovations there, you've got open source, you've got ... dominating the app developer market big time. >> Rick: Yup >> So you bring network guys who know ops to the application guys who don't want to now ops. >> Rick: They don't. >> And they can share. >> But increasingly, it's the, we talked about this yesterday with Susie, the network, the evolution of a lot of IT componentry, especially if you look at, for example: hardware, server, storage, there is a regular cadence of how it's improved. The network has always been a step function. We go from IPv4 to IPv5, whatever else it might be. There's always a step function and developers have always looked at the networks and it's too big and we don't know when the next big change is going to happen. As a stable, unchanging thing and it never impacted their vision of architecture or how they did things. And we're not too far off from another big step function that Cisco is going to be right in the middle of and having those two groups talk about how to do things today but also how to do things in a plan-full way to anticipate some of the big changes that are going to happen in network technology is going to be really crucial for developers to build stuff that's got more than a 3 month life to it. Do you agree with that? >> Absolutely, and all that came when we took that intelligence and moved it into a software layer. Because you have the opportunity to make it unstable which is not what you want to do, so you have to plan it out, you have to figure it out but you have to, once it's in software, you have to be able to leverage it and that's what it's all about. You know, the other component of DevNet is an educational component. So what we want to do is teach software developers the value the network and a little bit about networking and more importantly what those API's are but we're not trying to turn the software people into networking guys. And then for the networking guys, we're teaching them basic coding skills, so we're not going to necessarily making them a coder unless they want to do that, they could. It gives an appreciation for what the other group does and so we have a big educational component. >> Peter: And how each impacts the other. >> How each impacts the other cuz they can start talking to each other and working together. And when you start looking at a DevOps environment it is crossing the hallway to go talk to this other guy in another department and if we can educate these guys on how to work with each other I think it's kind of that pie level vision. >> The ops sharing is happening, you're seeing people share in the operational roles and you need to be people who know the network to do that. >> Rick: Yup. >> Okay, the question for you is: How are you going to get the folks who are watching or in the DevOps world, Cloud-Native world, on board? Is there a strategy or is it is going to be a loose affiliation, is it going to be a formal program? Obviously developer.cisco.com is the site but this great tag line: "Infrastructure meets applications" is interesting, or "applications meets infrastructure" is a really good vision. How do I get involved if I'm not a part of DevNet? >> Well obviously come to developer.cisco.com and get involved. Not everybody can hear ... >> Do I raise my hand and say, "I'm an app developer" or is there like a profiling kind of thing? >> Yeah there is, yeah! you come in and if you come into our learning area there is a learning track. I'm an app developer, I want to learn about networking; there. If I'm a networking guy and I want to learn about app development we have learning tracks that will take you through either. >> John: That's cool. >> Yeah. >> So just declare everything. I could say it and get it. >> Rick: Yup. We have events. DevNet Create is big but we actually have events all throughout the year and around the world. We call them DevNet express events, we're at Cisco Live, we're also going to be at various DevOps conferences so sometimes we just have to go to where the developer is. So you'll see us there with our developer evangelists. So yeah, no, there is definitely a plan to get the word out there and you're going to see a lot more Cisco. You know we've only been 3 years old. If you think about what we've accomplished in 3 years, pretty significant but we still have a long way to go. >> What's the big learnings you could share with the folks, it could be anecdotal, personal, business, from the process of 3 years, I mean, DevNet again, you guys were entrepreneurs, you weren't sure, the action was overwhelming, and congratulations for that. And now you've got DevNet Create. As I said, "Middle of the Fairway for you guys!" Did a good job here. What'd you learn? What's the learnings? >> It's risk taking, you know. You've got to take risks, you've got to fail, and you've got to mistake and you've got to learn from them. A lot of us that are in DevNet, including myself, came from the start up world, okay. And so you just know about that. You know: fail fast, fail often. >> John: Don't be afraid to take a risk. >> Don't be afraid to take a risk. When we had our first, when we started DevNet we had our first even at Cisco Live. We invested a lot of money to put a developer conference together in five months as a brand new organization. Literally I remember walking into that event at the Mochone thinking this could be empty, it could fall on the floor and I'm out of a job. (John laughs) Luckily when I came up that escalator at 10:00 the place was packed and we knew we had something. >> But in a classic strategy you doubled down! >> We doubled down yeah, now here we are again. Now we're getting out of Cisco Live, doing DevNet Create which is kind of separate from cisco by design. >> How do you feel about this event? When you walked in here did you feel like it's working? I mean, What's the vibe, what's your take on it? >> Yeah, and I think the cool thing is we are getting people that would not necessarily come to Cisco Live. Some of them do, you know we still have some of our loyal audience here. But yeah, we're talking about new topics and so we see this definitely as the future. We're going to do more of these events and we're going to do them in Europe in places like that. >> We certainly want you to come into our studio and talk more about this. It's something we're passionate about, as you know. Glad to support you guys here, think it's a great direction for Cisco and we love DevOps, We love Cloud-Native, we love Big Data, so you guys are on the right track, congratulations. >> Thank you very much.
