I'm John Furrier with theCUBE I'm in our Palo Alto studios with our quarantine crew. We have a great lineup here for DockerCon 2020. Virtual event, normally it was in person face to face. I'll be with you throughout the day from an amazing lineup of content, over 50 different sessions, cube tracks, keynotes, and we've got two great co-hosts here with Docker, Jenny Burcio and Bret Fisher. We'll be with you all day today, taking you through the program, helping you navigate the sessions. I'm so excited. Jenny, this is a virtual event. We talk about this. Can you believe it? We have a great day planned for you. >> Guys great job getting this all together. I know how hard it is. These virtual events are hard to pull off. I'm blown away by the community at Docker. The amount of sessions that are coming in the sponsor support has been amazing. Just the overall excitement around the brand and the opportunities given this tough times where we're in. It's super exciting again, made the internet gods be with us throughout the day, but there's plenty of content. Bret's got an amazing all day marathon group of people coming in and chatting. Jenny, this has been an amazing journey and it's a great opportunity. Tell us about the virtual event. Why DockerCon virtual. Obviously everyone's canceling their events, but this is special to you guys. Talk about DockerCon virtual this year. >> The Docker community shows up at DockerCon every year, and even though we didn't have the opportunity to do an in person event this year, we didn't want to lose the time that we all come together at DockerCon. The conversations, the amazing content and learning opportunities. So we decided back in December to make DockerCon a virtual event. And of course when we did that, there was no quarantine we didn't expect, you know, I certainly didn't expect to be delivering it from my living room, but we were just, I mean we were completely blown away. There's nearly 70,000 people across the globe that have registered for DockerCon today. And when you look at DockerCon of past right live events, really and we're learning are just the tip of the iceberg and so thrilled to be able to deliver a more inclusive global event today. And we have so much planned I think. Bret, you want to tell us some of the things that you have planned? >> Well, I'm sure I'm going to forget something 'cause there's a lot going on. But, we've obviously got interviews all day today on this channel with John and the crew. Jenny has put together an amazing set of all these speakers, and then you have the captain's on deck, which is essentially the YouTube live hangout where we just basically talk shop. It's all engineers, all day long. Captains and special guests. And we're going to be in chat talking to you about answering your questions. Maybe we'll dig into some stuff based on the problems you're having or the questions you have. Maybe there'll be some random demos, but it's basically not scripted, it's an all day long unscripted event. So I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun hanging out in there. >> Well guys, I want to just say it's been amazing how you structured this so everyone has a chance to ask questions, whether it's informal laid back in the captain's channel or in the sessions, where the speakers will be there with their presentations. But Jenny, I want to get your thoughts because we have a site out there that's structured a certain way for the folks watching. If you're on your desktop, there's a main stage hero. There's then tracks and Bret's running the captain's tracks. You can click on that link and jump into his session all day long. He's got an amazing set of line of sleet, leaning back, having a good time. And then each of the tracks, you can jump into those sessions. It's on a clock, it'll be available on demand. All that content is available if you're on your desktop. If you're on your mobile, it's the same thing. Look at the calendar, find the session that you want. If you're interested in it, you could watch it live and chat with the participants in real time or watch it on demand. So there's plenty of content to navigate through. We do have it on a clock and we'll be streaming sessions as they happen. So you're in the moment and that's a great time to chat in real time. But there's more, Jenny, getting more out of this event. You guys try to bring together the stimulation of community. How does the participants get more out of the the event besides just consuming some of the content all day today? >> Yes, so first set up your profile, put your picture next to your chat handle and then chat. John said we have various setups today to help you get the most out of your experience are breakout sessions. The content is prerecorded, so you get quality content and the speakers and chat so you can ask questions the whole time. What are you excited about throughout your day? Take us through your program on the captains. That's going to be probably pretty dynamic in the chat too. >> Yeah, so I'm sure we're going to have lots of, stuff going on in chat. So no cLancaerns there about, having crickets in the chat. But we're going to be basically starting the day with two of my good Docker captain friends, (murmurs) and Laura Taco. And we're going to basically start you out and at the end of this keynote, at the end of this hour and we're going to get you going and then you can maybe jump out and go to take some sessions. Maybe there's some stuff you want to check out and other sessions that you want to chat and talk with the instructors, the speakers there, and then you're going to come back to us, right? Or go over, check out the interviews. So the idea is you're hopping back and forth and throughout the day we're basically changing out every hour. We're not just changing out the guests basically, but we're also changing out the topics that we can cover because different guests will have different expertise. We're going to have some special guests in from Microsoft, talk about some of the cool stuff going on there, and basically it's captains all day long. And if you've been on my YouTube live show you've watched that, you've seen a lot of the guests we have on there. I'm lucky to just hang out with all these really awesome people around the world, so it's going to be fun. >> Awesome and the content again has been preserved. You guys had a great session on call for paper sessions. Jenny, this is good stuff. What other things can people do to make it interesting? Obviously we're looking for suggestions. Bret, any final thoughts on what you want to share to the community around, what you got going on the virtual event, just random thoughts? >> Yeah, so sorry we can't all be together in the same physical place. But the coolest thing about as business online, is that we actually get to involve everyone, so as long as you have a computer and internet, you can actually attend DockerCon if you've never been to one before. So we're trying to recreate that experience online. Like Jenny said, the code of conduct is important. So, we're all in this together with the chat, so try to be nice in there. These are all real humans that, have feelings just like me. So let's try to keep it cool. And, over in the Catherine's channel we'll be taking your questions and maybe playing some music, playing some games, giving away some free stuff, while you're, in between sessions learning, oh yeah. >> And I got to say props to your rig. I'm looking forward to the Microsoft Amazon sessions, which are going to be good. And there's a couple of great customer sessions there. I tweeted this out last night and let them get you guys' reaction to this because there's been a lot of talk around the COVID crisis that we're in, but there's also a positive upshot to this is Cambridge and explosion of developers that are going to be building new apps. And I said, you know, apps aren't going to just change the world, they're going to save the world. So a lot of the theme here is the impact that developers are having right now in the current situation. If we get the goodness of compose and all the things going on in Docker and the relationships, this real impact happening with the developer community. And it's pretty evident in the program and some of the talks and some of the examples. how containers and microservices are certainly changing the world and helping save the world, your thoughts. >> Like you said, a number of sessions and interviews in the program today that really dive into that. And even particularly around COVID, Clement Beyondo is sharing his company's experience, from being able to continue operations in Italy when they were completely shut down beginning of March. We have also in theCUBE channel several interviews about from the national Institute of health and precision cancer medicine at the end of the day. And you just can really see how containerization and developers are moving in industry and really humanity forward because of what they're able to build and create, with advances in technology. >> Yeah and the first responders and these days is developers. Bret compose is getting a lot of traction on Twitter. I can see some buzz already building up. There's huge traction with compose, just the ease of use and almost a call for arms for integrating into all the system language libraries, I mean, what's going on with compose? I mean, what's the captain say about this? I mean, it seems to be really tracking in terms of demand and interest. >> I think we're over 700,000 composed files on GitHub. So it's definitely beyond just the standard Docker run commands. It's definitely the next tool that people use to run containers. Just by having that we just buy, and that's not even counting. I mean that's just counting the files that are named Docker compose YAML. So I'm sure a lot of you out there have created a YAML file to manage your local containers or even on a server with Docker compose. And the nice thing is is Docker is doubling down on that. So we've gotten some news recently, from them about what they want to do with opening the spec up, getting more companies involved because compose is already gathered so much interest from the community. You know, AWS has importers, there's Kubernetes importers for it. So there's more stuff coming and we might just see something here in a few minutes. >> All right, well let's get into the keynote guys, jump into the keynote. Hi, I'm Scott Johnson, CEO of Docker and welcome to DockerCon 2020. This year DockerCon is an all virtual event with more than 60,000 members of the Docker Community joining from around the world. And with the global shelter in place policies, we're excited to offer a unifying, inclusive virtual community event in which anyone and everyone can participate from their home. As a company, Docker has been through a lot of changes since our last DockerCon last year. The most important starting last November, is our refocusing 100% on developers and development teams. As part of that refocusing, one of the big challenges we've been working on, is how to help development teams quickly and efficiently get their app from code to cloud And wouldn't it be cool, if developers could quickly deploy to the cloud right from their local environment with the commands and workflow they already know. We're excited to give you a sneak preview of what we've been working on. And rather than slides, we thought we jumped right into the product. And joining me demonstrate some of these cool new features, is enclave your DACA. One of our engineers here at Docker working on Docker compose. Hello Lanca. >> Hello. >> We're going to show how an application development team collaborates using Docker desktop and Docker hub. And then deploys the app directly from the Docker command line to the clouds in just two commands. A development team would use this to quickly share functional changes of their app with the product management team, with beta testers or other development teams. Let's go ahead and take a look at our app. Now, this is a web app, that randomly pulls words from the database, and assembles them into sentences. You can see it's a pretty typical three tier application with each tier implemented in its own container. We have a front end web service, a middle tier, which implements the logic to randomly pull the words from the database and assemble them and a backend database. And here you can see the database uses the Postgres official image from Docker hub. Now let's first run the app locally using Docker command line and the Docker engine in Docker desktop. We'll do a Doc compose up and you can see that it's pulling the containers from our Docker organization account. Wordsmith, inc. Now that it's up. Let's go ahead and look at local host and we'll confirm that the application is functioning as desired. So there's one sentence, let's pull and now you and you can indeed see that we are pulling random words and assembling into sentences. Now you can also see though that the look and feel is a bit dated. And so Lanca is going to show us how easy it is to make changes and share them with the rest of the team. Lanca, over to you. >> Thank you, so I have, the source code of our application on my machine and I have updated it with the latest team from DockerCon 2020. So before committing the code, I'm going to build the application locally and run it, to verify that indeed the changes are good. So I'm going to build with Docker compose the image for the web service. Now that the image has been built, I'm going to deploy it locally. Wait to compose up. We can now check the dashboard in a Docker desktop that indeed our containers are up and running, and we can access, we can open in the web browser, the end point for the web service. So as we can see, we have the latest changes in for our application. So as you can see, the application has been updated successfully. So now, I'm going to push the image that I have just built to my organization's shared repository on Docker hub. So I can do this with Docker compose push web. Now that the image has been updated in the Docker hub repository, or my teammates can access it and check the changes. >> Excellent, well, thank you Lanca. Now of course, in these times, video conferencing is the new normal, and as great as it is, video conferencing does not allow users to actually test the application. And so, to allow us to have our app be accessible by others outside organizations such as beta testers or others, let's go ahead and deploy to the cloud. >> Sure we, can do this by employing a context. A Docker context, is a mechanism that we can use to target different platforms for deploying containers. The context we hold, information as the endpoint for the platform, and also how to authenticate to it. So I'm going to list the context that I have set locally. As you can see, I'm currently using the default context that is pointing to my local Docker engine. So all the commands that I have issued so far, we're targeting my local engine. Now, in order to deploy the application on a cloud. I have an account in the Azure Cloud, where I have no resource running currently, and I have created for this account, dedicated context that will hold the information on how to connect it to it. So now all I need to do, is to switch to this context, with Docker context use, and the name of my cloud context. So all the commands that I'm going to run, from now on, are going to target the cloud platform. So we can also check very, more simpler, in a simpler way we can check the running containers with Docker PS. So as we see no container is running in my cloud account. Now to deploy the application, all I need to do is to run a Docker compose up. And this will trigger the deployment of my application. >> Thanks Lanca. Now notice that Lanca did not have to move the composed file from Docker desktop to Azure. Notice you have to make any changes to the Docker compose file, and nor did she change any of the containers that she and I were using locally in our local environments. So the same composed file, same images, run locally and upon Azure without changes. While the app is deploying to Azure, let's highlight some of the features in Docker hub that helps teams with remote first collaboration. So first, here's our team's account where it (murmurs) and you can see the updated container sentences web that Lanca just pushed a couple of minutes ago. As far as collaboration, we can add members using their Docker ID or their email, and then we can organize them into different teams depending on their role in the application development process. So and then Lancae they're organized into different teams, we can assign them permissions, so that teams can work in parallel without stepping on each other's changes accidentally. For example, we'll give the engineering team full read, write access, whereas the product management team will go ahead and just give read only access. So this role based access controls, is just one of the many features in Docker hub that allows teams to collaboratively and quickly develop applications. Okay Lanca, how's our app doing? >> Our app has been successfully deployed to the cloud. So, we can easily check either the Azure portal to verify the containers running for it or simpler we can run a Docker PS again to get the list with the containers that have been deployed for it. In the output from the Docker PS, we can see an end point that we can use to access our application in the web browser. So we can see the application running in clouds. It's really up to date and now we can take this particular endpoint and share it within our organization such that anybody can have a look at it. >> That's cool Onka. We showed how we can deploy an app to the cloud in minutes and just two commands, and using commands that Docker users already know, thanks so much. In that sneak preview, you saw a team developing an app collaboratively, with a tool chain that includes Docker desktop and Docker hub. And simply by switching Docker context from their local environment to the cloud, deploy that app to the cloud, to Azure without leaving the command line using Docker commands they already know. And in doing so, really simplifying for development team, getting their app from code to cloud. And just as important, what you did not see, was a lot of complexity. You did not see cloud specific interfaces, user management or security. You did not see us having to provision and configure compute networking and storage resources in the cloud. And you did not see infrastructure specific application changes to either the composed file or the Docker images. And by simplifying a way that complexity, these new features help application DevOps teams, quickly iterate and get their ideas, their apps from code to cloud, and helping development teams, build share and run great applications, is what Docker is all about. A Docker is able to simplify for development teams getting their app from code to cloud quickly as a result of standards, products and ecosystem partners. It starts with open standards for applications and application artifacts, and active open source communities around those standards to ensure portability and choice. Then as you saw in the demo, the Docker experience delivered by Docker desktop and Docker hub, simplifies a team's collaborative development of applications, and together with ecosystem partners provides every stage of an application development tool chain. For example, deploying applications to the cloud in two commands. What you saw on the demo, well that's an extension of our strategic partnership with Microsoft, which we announced yesterday. And you can learn more about our partnership from Amanda Silver from Microsoft later today, right here at DockerCon. Another tool chain stage, the capability to scan applications for security and vulnerabilities, as a result of our partnership with Sneak, which we announced last week. You can learn more about that partnership from Peter McKay, CEO Sneak, again later today, right here at DockerCon. A third example, development team can automate the build of container images upon a simple get push, as a result of Docker hub integrations with GitHub and Alaska and Bitbucket. As a final example of Docker and the ecosystem helping teams quickly build applications, together with our ISV partners. We offer in Docker hub over 500 official and verified publisher images of ready to run Dockerized application components such as databases, load balancers, programming languages, and much more. Of course, none of this happens without people. And I would like to take a moment to thank four groups of people in particular. First, the Docker team, past and present. We've had a challenging 12 months including a restructuring and then a global pandemic, and yet their support for each other, and their passion for the product, this community and our customers has never been stronger. We think our community, Docker wouldn't be Docker without you, and whether you're one of the 50 Docker captains, they're almost 400 meetup organizers, the thousands of contributors and maintainers. Every day you show up, you give back, you teach new support. We thank our users, more than six and a half million developers who have built more than 7 million applications and are then sharing those applications through Docker hub at a rate of more than one and a half billion poles per week. Those apps are then run, are more than 44 million Docker engines. And finally, we thank our customers, the over 18,000 docker subscribers, both individual developers and development teams from startups to large organizations, 60% of which are outside the United States. And they spend every industry vertical, from media, to entertainment to manufacturing. healthcare and much more. Thank you. Now looking forward, given these unprecedented times, we would like to offer a challenge. While it would be easy to feel helpless and miss this global pandemic, the challenge is for us as individuals and as a community to instead see and grasp the tremendous opportunities before us to be forces for good. For starters, look no further than the pandemic itself, in the fight against this global disaster, applications and data are playing a critical role, and the Docker Community quickly recognize this and rose to the challenge. There are over 600 COVID-19 related publicly available projects on Docker hub today, from data processing to genome analytics to data visualization folding at home. The distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, is also available on Docker hub, and it uses spirit compute capacity to analyze COVID-19 proteins to aid in the design of new therapies. And right here at DockerCon, you can hear how Clemente Biondo and his company engineering in Gagne area Informatica are using Docker in the fight with COVID-19 in Italy every day. Now, in addition to fighting the pandemic directly, as a community, we also have an opportunity to bridge the disruption the pandemic is wreaking. It's impacting us at work and at home in every country around the world and every aspect of our lives. For example, many of you have a student at home, whose world is going to be very different when they returned to school. As employees, all of us have experienced the stresses from working from home as well as many of the benefits and in fact 75% of us say that going forward, we're going to continue to work from home at least occasionally. And of course one of the biggest disruptions has been job losses, over 35 million in the United States alone. And we know that's affected many of you. And yet your skills are in such demand and so important now more than ever. And that's why here at DockerCon, we want to try to do our part to help, and we're promoting this hashtag on Twitter, hashtag DockerCon jobs, where job seekers and those offering jobs can reach out to one another and connect. Now, pandemics disruption is accelerating the shift of more and more of our time, our priorities, our dollars from offline to online to hybrid, and even online only ways of living. We need to find new ways to collaborate, new approaches to engage customers, new modes for education and much more. And what is going to fill the needs created by this acceleration from offline, online? New applications. And it's this need, this demand for all these new applications that represents a great opportunity for the Docker community of developers. The world needs us, needs you developers now more than ever. So let's seize this moment. Let us in our teams, go build share and run great new applications. Thank you for joining today. We're an industry research firm focusing on developer led technology adoption. So that's I guess why Docker invited me to DockerCon 2020 to talk about some trends that we're seeing in the world of work and software development. So Monk Chips, that's who I am. I spent a lot of time on Twitter. It's a great research tool. It's a great way to find out what's going on with keep track of, as I say, there's people that we value so highly software developers, engineers and practitioners. So when I started talking to Docker about this event and it was pre Rhona, should we say, the idea of a crowd wasn't a scary thing, but today you see something like this, it makes you feel uncomfortable. This is not a place that I want to be. I'm pretty sure it's a place you don't want to be. And you know, to that end, I think it's interesting quote by Ellen Powell, she says, "Work from home is now just work" And we're going to see more and more of that. Organizations aren't feeling the same way they did about work before. Who all these people? Who is my cLancaern? So GitHub says has 50 million developers right on its network. Now, one of the things I think is most interesting, it's not that it has 50 million developers. Perhaps that's a proxy for number of developers worldwide. But quite frankly, a lot of those accounts, there's all kinds of people there. They're just Selena's. There are data engineers, there are data scientists, there are product managers, there were tech marketers. It's a big, big community and it goes way beyond just software developers itself. Frankly for me, I'd probably be saying there's more like 20 to 25 million developers worldwide, but GitHub knows a lot about the world of code. So what else do they know? One of the things they know is that world of code software and opensource, is becoming increasingly global. I get so excited about this stuff. The idea that there are these different software communities around the planet where we're seeing massive expansions in terms of things like open source. Great example is Nigeria. So Nigeria more than 200 million people, right? The energy there in terms of events, in terms of learning, in terms of teaching, in terms of the desire to code, the desire to launch businesses, desire to be part of a global software community is just so exciting. And you know, these, this sort of energy is not just in Nigeria, it's in other countries in Africa, it's happening in Egypt. It's happening around the world. This energy is something that's super interesting to me. We need to think about that. We've got global that we need to solve. And software is going to be a big part of that. At the moment, we can talk about other countries, but what about frankly the gender gap, the gender issue that, you know, from 1984 onwards, the number of women taking computer science degrees began to, not track but to create in comparison to what men were doing. The tech industry is way too male focused, there are men that are dominant, it's not welcoming, we haven't found ways to have those pathways and frankly to drive inclusion. And the women I know in tech, have to deal with the massively disproportionate amount of stress and things like online networks. But talking about online networks and talking about a better way of living, I was really excited by get up satellite recently, was a fantastic demo by Alison McMillan and she did a demo of a code spaces. So code spaces is Microsoft online ID, new platform that they've built. And online IDs, we're never quite sure, you know, plenty of people still out there just using the max. But, visual studio code has been a big success. And so this idea of moving to one online IDE, it's been around that for awhile. What they did was just make really tight integration. So you're in your GitHub repo and just be able to create a development environment with effectively one click, getting rid of all of the act shaving, making it super easy. And what I loved was it the demo, what Ali's like, yeah cause this is great. One of my kids are having a nap, I can just start (murmurs) and I don't have to sort out all the rest of it. And to me that was amazing. It was like productivity as inclusion. I'm here was a senior director at GitHub. They're doing this amazing work and then making this clear statement about being a parent. And I think that was fantastic. Because that's what, to me, importantly just working from home, which has been so challenging for so many of us, began to open up new possibilities, and frankly exciting possibilities. So Alley's also got a podcast parent-driven development, which I think is super important. Because this is about men and women rule in this together show parenting is a team sport, same as software development. And the idea that we should be thinking about, how to be more productive, is super important to me. So I want to talk a bit about developer culture and how it led to social media. Because you know, your social media, we're in this ad bomb stage now. It's TikTok, it's like exercise, people doing incredible back flips and stuff like that. Doing a bunch of dancing. We've had the world of sharing cat gifts, Facebook, we sort of see social media is I think a phenomenon in its own right. Whereas the me, I think it's interesting because it's its progenitors, where did it come from? So here's (murmurs) So 1971, one of the features in the emergency management information system, that he built, which it's topical, it was for medical tracking medical information as well, medical emergencies, included a bulletin board system. So that it could keep track of what people were doing on a team and make sure that they were collaborating effectively, boom! That was the start of something big, obviously. Another day I think is worth looking at 1983, Sorania Pullman, spanning tree protocol. So at DEC, they were very good at distributed systems. And the idea was that you can have a distributed system and so much of the internet working that we do today was based on radius work. And then it showed that basically, you could span out a huge network so that everyone could collaborate. That is incredibly exciting in terms of the trends, that I'm talking about. So then let's look at 1988, you've got IRC. IRC what developer has not used IRC, right. Well, I guess maybe some of the other ones might not have. But I don't know if we're post IRC yet, but (murmurs) at a finished university, really nailed it with IRC as a platform that people could communicate effectively with. And then we go into like 1991. So we've had IRC, we've had finished universities, doing a lot of really fantastic work about collaboration. And I don't think it was necessarily an accident that this is where the line is twofold, announced Linux. So Linux was a wonderfully packaged, idea in terms of we're going to take this Unix thing. And when I say package, what a package was the idea that we could collaborate on software. So, it may have just been the work of one person, but clearly what made it important, made it interesting, was finding a social networking pattern, for software development so that everybody could work on something at scale. That was really, I think, fundamental and foundational. Now I think it's important, We're going to talk about Linus, to talk about some things that are not good about software culture, not good about open source culture, not good about hacker culture. And that's where I'm going to talk about code of conduct. We have not been welcoming to new people. We got the acronyms, JFTI, We call people news, that's super unhelpful. We've got to find ways to be more welcoming and more self-sustaining in our communities, because otherwise communities will fail. And I'd like to thank everyone that has a code of conduct and has encouraged others to have codes of conduct. We need to have codes of conduct that are enforced to ensure that we have better diversity at our events. And that's what women, underrepresented minorities, all different kinds of people need to be well looked off to and be in safe and inclusive spaces. And that's the online events. But of course it's also for all of our activities offline. So Linus, as I say, I'm not the most charming of characters at all time, but he has done some amazing technology. So we got to like 2005 the creation of GIT. Not necessarily the distributed version control system that would win. But there was some interesting principles there, and they'd come out of the work that he had done in terms of trying to build and sustain the Linux code base. So it was very much based on experience. He had an itch that he needed to scratch and there was a community that was this building, this thing. So what was going to be the option, came up with Git foundational to another huge wave of social change, frankly get to logical awesome. April 20 April, 2008 GitHub, right? GiHub comes up, they've looked at Git, they've packaged it up, they found a way to make it consumable so the teams could use it and really begin to take advantage of the power of that distributed version control model. Now, ironically enough, of course they centralized the service in doing so. So we have a single point of failure on GitHub. But on the other hand, the notion of the poll request, the primitives that they established and made usable by people, that changed everything in terms of software development. I think another one that I'd really like to look at is Slack. So Slack is a huge success used by all different kinds of businesses. But it began specifically as a pivot from a company called Glitch. It was a game company and they still wanted, a tool internally that was better than IRC. So they built out something that later became Slack. So Slack 2014, is established as a company and basically it was this Slack fit software engineering. The focus on automation, the conversational aspects, the asynchronous aspects. It really pulled things together in a way that was interesting to software developers. And I think we've seen this pattern in the world, frankly, of the last few years. Software developers are influences. So Slack first used by the engineering teams, later used by everybody. And arguably you could say the same thing actually happened with Apple. Apple was mainstreamed by developers adopting that platform. Get to 2013, boom again, Solomon Hikes, Docker, right? So Docker was, I mean containers were not new, they were just super hard to use. People found it difficult technology, it was Easter Terek. It wasn't something that they could fully understand. Solomon did an incredible job of understanding how containers could fit into modern developer workflows. So if we think about immutable images, if we think about the ability to have everything required in the package where you are, it really tied into what people were trying to do with CICD, tied into microservices. And certainly the notion of sort of display usability Docker nailed that, and I guess from this conference, at least the rest is history. So I want to talk a little bit about, scratching the itch. And particularly what has become, I call it the developer authentic. So let's go into dark mode now. I've talked about developers laying out these foundations and frameworks that, the mainstream, frankly now my son, he's 14, he (murmurs) at me if I don't have dark mode on in an application. And it's this notion that developers, they have an aesthetic, it does get adopted I mean it's quite often jokey. One of the things we've seen in the really successful platforms like GitHub, Docker, NPM, let's look at GitHub. Let's look at over that Playfulness. I think was really interesting. And that changes the world of work, right? So we've got the world of work which can be buttoned up, which can be somewhat tight. I think both of those companies were really influential, in thinking that software development, which is a profession, it's also something that can and is fun. And I think about how can we make it more fun? How can we develop better applications together? Takes me to, if we think about Docker talking about build, share and run, for me the key word is share, because development has to be a team sport. It needs to be sharing. It needs to be kind and it needs to bring together people to do more effective work. Because that's what it's all about, doing effective work. If you think about zoom, it's a proxy for collaboration in terms of its value. So we've got all of these airlines and frankly, add up that their share that add up their total value. It's currently less than Zoom. So video conferencing has become so much of how we live now on a consumer basis. But certainly from a business to business perspective. I want to talk about how we live now. I want to think about like, what will come out all of this traumatic and it is incredibly traumatic time? I'd like to say I'm very privileged. I can work from home. So thank you to all the frontline workers that are out there that they're not in that position. But overall what I'm really thinking about, there's some things that will come out of this that will benefit us as a culture. Looking at cities like Paris, Milan, London, New York, putting a new cycling infrastructure, so that people can social distance and travel outside because they don't feel comfortable on public transport. I think sort of amazing widening pavements or we can't do that. All these cities have done it literally overnight. This sort of changes is exciting. And what does come off that like, oh there are some positive aspects of the current issues that we face. So I've got a conference or I've got a community that may and some of those, I've been working on. So Katie from HashiCorp and Carla from container solutions basically about, look, what will the world look like in developer relations? Can we have developer relations without the air miles? 'Cause developer advocates, they do too much travel ends up, you know, burning them out, develop relations. People don't like to say no. They may have bosses that say, you know, I was like, Oh that corporates went great. Now we're going to roll it out worldwide to 47 cities. That's stuff is terrible. It's terrible from a personal perspective, it's really terrible from an environmental perspective. We need to travel less. Virtual events are crushing it. Microsoft just at build, right? Normally that'd be just over 10,000 people, they had 245,000 plus registrations. 40,000 of them in the last day, right? Red Hat summit, 80,000 people, IBM think 90,000 people, GitHub Crushed it as well. Like this is a more inclusive way people can dip in. They can be from all around the world. I mentioned Nigeria and how fantastic it is. Very often Nigerian developers and advocates find it hard to get visas. Why should they be shut out of events? Events are going to start to become remote first because frankly, look at it, if you're turning in those kinds of numbers, and Microsoft was already doing great online events, but they absolutely nailed it. They're going to have to ask some serious questions about why everybody should get back on a plane again. So if you're going to do remote, you've got to be intentional about it. It's one thing I've learned some exciting about GitLab. GitLab's culture is amazing. Everything is documented, everything is public, everything is transparent. Think that really clear and if you look at their principles, everything, you can't have implicit collaboration models. Everything needs to be documented and explicit, so that anyone can work anywhere and they can still be part of the team. Remote first is where we're at now, Coinbase, Shopify, even Barkley says the not going to go back to having everybody in offices in the way they used to. This is a fundamental shift. And I think it's got significant implications for all industries, but definitely for software development. Here's the thing, the last 20 years were about distributed computing, microservices, the cloud, we've got pretty good at that. The next 20 years will be about distributed work. We can't have everybody living in San Francisco and London and Berlin. The talent is distributed, the talent is elsewhere. So how are we going to build tools? Who is going to scratch that itch to build tools to make them more effective? Who's building the next generation of apps, you are, thanks.

Of course, it's theCube's coverage of four days of Cube action. All day, I'm John Furrier, my host Stu Miniman, got two great guests, Thomas Scheibe, Vice President of Cisco and Yousuf Khan, Vice President Technical Marketing. All things data center and networking, these are the guys. Guys, good to see you again, welcome back. >> Thanks, always fun. >> Thank you very much. So, kicking off the show, I know there's some announcements coming so we're going to save the good stuff for tomorrow and Wednesday. But a lot of new things going on in data center and Cisco ecosystem. Give us the update. >> Yeah, again, thanks for having us on. So yeah, I mean there's actually a lot of good stuff on the data center side. Let me touch a couple of items. One we started two years ago, actually, was assurance. We're expanding our analytics portfolio, we're adding insights capability. So it's the assurance and network insights tool set. Very, very cool stuff. Really focused on the network operator. That was one of the messages we got, you guys need to help us here in these complex cloud environments. And so what we have is we built ACI extensions for our fabric controllers. Bolster NEXUS and ACI site. Same same. Pure software extension. And initial feedback from customers is very, very happy with what they see. So that's one piece. I don't know, Yousuf, you want to say a little bit on what we do with ecosystem partners? >> Thank you, yes we are very excited also to announce some of the new integrations that we have with our ecosystem partners. And for example AlgoSec and ACI integration. Terraform from HashiCorp and ACI integration. Continued expansion with our Splunk apps with the ecosystem. So these are some of the new things that we are working on. So that is excellent. And on top of it, Thomas, you can expand on it, but I think we are very happy that our 400 gig portfolio is shipping now, and we have customers in production on our 400 gig portfolio. So that is great news for us. >> Yeah, that's such a good point. >> You mentioned Splunk and Terraform, HashiCorp, you know, ecosystem partners. It's interesting, if you look at the performance of a lot of those companies, cloud is a tailwind for them. So, because the consumption is a service, the customers are all embracing it. But it's not just public cloud, the data center now is back. Can you guys just share your thoughts on your environment with your customers? Because the software is the key, get it as a subscription or consumable model. What are some of the trends with the consumer, I mean customers in the data center, because cloud and hybrid now is happening, and it's real growth. >> Oh, it's absolutely happening. So yeah, I mean, maybe a little bit of why this is happening, why we are having some of these integrations, you're absolutely right, cloud is happening, but really cloud means hybrid cloud or for some customers, multi-cloud hybrid because they're going to have two different cloud providers. But it's really hybrid cloud, so it's really distributed data center. And so the interesting piece happens, it's really two things that need to come together. There's this whole network automation analytics, which is, how do I get from my data center into a cloud and how do I treat this really like a utility. But that's the infrastructure. Then there's this front end, because what really drives this is the application refactoring. And this is where the application automation needs to come together with the infrastructure automation, and so that's one of the reasons why we have this integration with Terraform and the other one is like a Jenkins Pipeline tool. How do we actually take what the application was in the front end, and then seamlessly mix it into infrastructure, which is like a supernode, or infrastructure as a code thing. And that doesn't really matter whether that's in the cloud or on-prem, it has to work across. >> Automation is a huge thing. >> Yeah, and it's so nice to hear. Because Thomas, actually, when Cisco first came out with application-centric infrastructure, I kind of looked at it a little bit, I'm like, well, come on, how much are you actually tying to the application? Well, it was Cisco skating to where the puck was going. And I think the technology today and what you're talking about is closer to that application, and we have, we're here in the devNet zone, we're talking more about those pieces. Not just, oh, it's something that runs over the pipes and I've got buffers and traditional networking pieces. Would you say that's fair, that we're a little bit more application-centric today in 2020 than we might have been a couple of years ago? >> That's actually, that's a very good comment. I probably would spin it slightly different, because I'm the pragmatic guy. Yeah, do we want everything at the same time? Absolutely, right? But you do have to put some of the building blocks in place. And yes, application-centric really meant more we changed the configuration management scheme of infrastructure from thinking about network terms to using application terms. And that's really what application-centric means. It doesn't mean you change the application. It was more like, change the paradigm. How do you manage infrastructure to not just automate. Everybody does that. But actually have an abstraction layer that is meaningful to secure and apps people. And you're right, it takes time to get there. >> In the end, customers and users are looking to deploy applications faster, manage applications better. That's the whole purpose of building the data center, so that we can host the applications. So what we did is, we introduced constructs that can help you manage those applications better, deploy them faster, manage the life cycle of those applications faster, and that's why we introduced the concepts. And again, I mean, going back to your comment in terms of buffers and searches, we firmly believe that the plumbing which is the networking, has to be state of the art for us to abstract these things on top through software and exploit through software. So we have to have a best-in-class network and the searches and then we have to build the op section that we can exploit through the software means, right? >> And also, that highlights the partnerships that you mentioned. Companies like Splunk and HashiCorp, they're living in a multi-cloud environment. So, I shouldn't need to think about for some of them, oh, wait, is it hybrid cloud, public cloud A, or my data center, things like that. I'm going to have that common tooling and skill set across those environments. >> Right, because all the CIOs that we talk to, I mean, multi-cloud is a big part of their strategy. And they want to make sure that they have consistent security posture, whether it is on-prem, whether it is on multi-cloud, or like, consistent governance model across hybrid cloud. >> Yeah, that's a good point. I want to get your thoughts on that, because multi-cloud and hybrid we've both mentioned, it's interesting and what we were saying in our opening segment just earlier, multi-cloud is a business problem. It's what you have, it's a situation. Hybrid is technology, you're implementing new things for an operating model that hits core to what happens in your environment, whether it's software development, application awareness, network automation. So, they're two different things but they're kind of related, right? So you nail hybrid with public private or public on-premise, and then multi-cloud can be dealt with. This seems to be where you guys are fitting in, right? Because you can do the hybrid public, then you connect, just that's the outcome of the software. >> You're spot on, right. People use it and sometimes it means the same, and sometimes it's really not. And hybrid cloud is really around, how can I extend my data center to a public cloud infrastructure, right? And that's more of a technology discussion. What do I need to do to make that happen? Then there's the multi-cloud discussions really around how do I have consistent policy, because I want to get to a situation where I don't have to worry. And so I can deploy this, subscribers can deploy whenever I want to. And so you're right, they're two distinct things that need to happen. But I do, sorry, I do want to come back to your comment because I can take up the energy there. Users are common there, right? I mean for half these application developers that want to use tools like Terraform or Jenkins or... >> Yousuf: Ansible. >> Or Ansible or Splunk, all of them expect that they have an API. And they expect actually a network API. What they all prefer to have is something that makes sense from an application construct perspective. And so that's why we had to put something in place to make that work, right? Was it they weren't all there? That the application team could jump? Clearly not, but it's very clear if if I look, we are now, what? Six years into this? If I look back, I think it really jolted the market and I think it got everybody moving in that direction. >> Yeah and again, when we use the term application-centric infrastructure, the whole purpose is it is conducive to deploy applications faster and manage applications better. That's why, right? >> Wonder if you can dig in a little bit on the 400 gig? Tell us, you know, it's not just the next step function. We're trying to go more to the applications, you talk about these changes. So, what do people need to understand about 400 gig? You know, what's the same? What does this unlock for me? Does this tie in with all my WIFI 6 and 5G, and everything else that I'm doing? You know, where and when is this most important? >> Wow, let me take it maybe, on 400 gig. A, it is available and shipping. A little sneak preview, we're actually going to have a customer with us on Wednesday talk about what they do with 400 gig, in their European data center. It's a French customer. 400 gig is really an evolution. The way I look at it, right, I mean, we had 1 gig, 10 gig, 40, 100, 400, right? It's literally an evolution. And we're always looking back and saying, wow, do you really need that much bandwidth? Then later, you know, when you ask the question, you look like you missed it. Where is it deployed today? Service provider. No data arm, it's all in the service provider space. It's primarily what we call a large scale cloud provider. But also, the initial more tech DCs are looking at this. It's an evolution. How do we build 400 gig? The way we approach it is, this is not something special. Everything that we do today around ACI, everything we do around analytics has to work, right? Because customers are not building their own speeds. Customers are building around the operational model, and whatever they have has to work. Just because I've got my 4x speed, that has to work the same way. And so 400 gig for us, is really an extension on what we have. And you will see it. It plucks indirectly. So, can I build a 400 gig ACI fabric? Yes you can, if you want to. >> With all that horsepower, obviously the next logical question that comes to my mind is, okay, faster means more data, that means more potential fat-finger mistakes on configurating. But if you automate that away, you need AI, right? So, analytics and AI become interesting to that. How does that fit into the customer journey when they go, okay, I'm going faster. If I'm application-aware, is there an analytics angle on this? >> Ah, yes there is. >> No, you're absolutely right. I think based on the survey that we received, US corporations are spending billions of dollars due to the IT outages, right? And most of those outages are human errors, right? 43% of the IT corporations are spending 43% of their time in troubleshooting those outages. So I think it is very, very important, as the data centers are scaling, as the fabrics are getting automated, is that we grab them and provide them with the operation tools that can look smartly and proactively predict the network changes. They can assure that in turn the business intent has been translated into the network and proactively tell them what are the problems they might run into. And when they run into the problems, also intelligently explain to them what is the correlation of the events that they see on their log files and what is the root cause of the problem, right? >> Yeah, you've got a lot of data to work with there. And experience, right? That's where the predictive analytics-- >> Maybe let me expand it a little bit. So, I started off as saying we have this interesting extension and network insight which is precisely that, what Yousuf just elaborated on. It's really an engine that takes telemetry data and we're going actually one step further than everybody else that I know. Everybody talks telemetry, but they're talking about software telemetry, network state. We actually can marry that up with actual traffic data, in real time, and we can give you that correlation. And now I'm getting actually where you are kind of going to, is, I can actually tell you what's the root cause between why do I have a congestion, why do I have a problem and who is impacted, and who caused this? And I can actually predict the stuff. I can actually see this before it happens, and now help a customer. I can look at other customer experience and I do really more with machine learning. There's really an opportunity there. We're just scratching the surface, if you ask me. There's so much upside-- >> I mean, historically speaking, if you look at it, I mean, we had all the show commands in the world, which can tell you that what the (mumbles) looks like. What the CAM utilization is. But the co-relation, or the time-based co-relation was missing, in terms of when you're seeing some traffic degradation, you don't know whether it is dropped, dropped on what search, which type of traffic is getting affected. Now we have the ability to, using MLANI techniques to co-relate these events and give a meaningful picture back to the customer, so you can pinpoint that, look, my video traffic on search number five is getting affected because there is a drop in the output buffer, because my link is congested. >> And that only works if you have quality data. It's not so much volume. Volume, I mean, the faster you go, Facebook and these guys prove it, you can use machine learning. But if the data's good, then the outcomes are better on the predictive. >> You need to have the flow data. If you don't have it, there's nothing you can do. >> So, scale is something we talk a lot about in the network. When I walk through the show floor, I'm starting to see some of the small scale, because we're talking about edge computing, we talked about shrinking down some of the things we're doing. When I hear telemetry data and AI and everything, I'm like, oh, here's some big opportunities that we need to attack at the edge. So, what can you tell us about where your group is with some of the edge pieces? >> Well, interesting, actually I just came out of the service provider opening session, and I was there together with T-Systems, actually, on stage. It was a customer of ours, he's using actually an ACI fabric together with a (mumbles) environment, which is like a virtual infrastructure management on x86. And they're using that in a Taco Cloud environment. And clearly, as an interconnect for networking services and it's going to move, if you look at what they have in mind, moving into more edge services. And that's an SP example, that we have today deployed. But clearly, I think you're going to see this in enterprises. You see this pretty much in every customer base, right? Because what you do have is you have this trade off between do I want to get all my data back, centrally? Or do I want a computer on the edge? And what we have put in place was our ACI fabric. I can run this in a highly distributed and still scalable environment, managed centrally, with policy. So, not only is this actually where we think the world is going, we actually have customers doing this as we speak. >> Yeah, I think it's a tell sign too, and my final question for you guys is, and we've been saying this, I've been saying this in theCube with the team is, cloud helps everybody if hybrid kicks in, which we now have proven that hybrid cloud is a reality. That's what's going on, technically, operationally. If you believe that, then you go to the next level which is cloudification value. So I want to rattle off some keywords for you guys, and I want you to respond to 'em. So, cloudification of networking. Network as a service. WAN to cloud versus internal. SD WAN, simplification of the edge, BGP. Security in networking. Common policy. >> It's a lot of technology and gobbledegook. >> That all sounds complex, but it's got to be simplified. What's your reaction to that, cloudification? How does that kind of direction package itself out for the benefit of customers? Because there's a lot in there, right? SD WAN alone. >> There's a lot in there. >> Yeah, simplify it. >> My easy way I look at this is in the end, it's a business. It's that simple, right? And what's going on, you want to generate more revenue, more services, which is where the profit and the money comes from. And you have to scale, which means more service individually. More scale, how many customers you're going to deliver to, how fast you can roll this out. Without having your costs going up the same way. And that's really what it comes down to, at least in my book. And then you make your decisions what you're going to pick, right? How do I figure out how to develop an app faster? Maybe you're going to go to the cloud, to start cloud-first, to develop. And then you figure out, oh, I need to hit a certain scale, I'm going to start having it running and running here, My dev here, my production here, I need to connect it. But all of these things again coming down, how do we roll out services faster without my costs actually going up, but preferably staying flat or going down. >> So, business model. >> It's a business problem, that's what it is. >> Yeah, and I think from my perspective, it is about us building tools for the customer so that we can simplify the whole process for them, right? So that these multi-cloud can be treated as another site. Whether you are deploying it on-prem, whether you are deploying in AWS or Azure, these are different sites to you. And you don't have, as a user, have to worry about the nuances of AWS versus Azure versus IBM versus on-prem, you should be able to say this is my intent, deploy it in AWS, deploy it in on-prem, and be able to move the workloads accordingly. >> So, if I extract what you guys just said is, if the hybrid and cloud equation operationally solves itself, technically and with software and automation, all that stuff, the business issues, the app development, basically, the apps drive everything. >> Thomas: Absolutely. That's a good summary. >> That's the nirvana, I mean, are we going to hear some of that on the show this week? >> Absolutely. >> I think you're going to hear some of these pieces, actually. How we're tying together business intelligence with infrastructure intelligence. I think you're going to hear of some it. >> And the good trend for the data center businesses is that the edge can look like a data center too. >> The data center is everywhere the data is. All day, I'm John Furrier, my host Stu Miniman, got two great guests, Thomas Scheibe, Vice President of Cisco and Yousuf Khan, Vice President Technical Marketing. All things data center and networking, these are the guys. Guys, good to see you again, welcome back. >> Thanks, always fun. >> Thank you very much. So, kicking off the show, I know there's some announcements coming so we're going to save the good stuff for tomorrow and Wednesday. But a lot of new things going on in data center and Cisco ecosystem. Give us the update. >> Yeah, again, thanks for having us on. So yeah, I mean there's actually a lot of good stuff on the data center side. Let me touch a couple of items. One we started two years ago, actually, was assurance. We're expanding our analytics portfolio, we're adding insights capability. So it's the assurance and network insights tool set. Very, very cool stuff. Really focused on the network operator. That was one of the messages we got, you guys need to help us here in these complex cloud environments. And so what we have is we built ACI extensions for our fabric controllers. Bolster NEXUS and ACI site. Same same. Pure software extension. And initial feedback from customers is very, very happy with what they see. So that's one piece. I don't know, Yousuf, you want to say a little bit on what we do with ecosystem partners? >> Thank you, yes we are very excited also to announce some of the new integrations that we have with our ecosystem partners. And for example AlgoSec and ACI integration. Terraform from HashiCorp and ACI integration. Continued expansion with our Splunk apps with the ecosystem. So these are some of the new things that we are working on. So that is excellent. And on top of it, Thomas, you can expand on it, but I think we are very happy that our 400 gig portfolio is shipping now, and we have customers in production on our 400 gig portfolio. So that is great news for us. >> Yeah, that's such a good point. >> You mentioned Splunk and Terraform, HashiCorp, you know, ecosystem partners. It's interesting, if you look at the performance of a lot of those companies, cloud is a tailwind for them. So, because the consumption is a service, the customers are all embracing it. But it's not just public cloud, the data center now is back. Can you guys just share your thoughts on your environment with your customers? Because the software is the key, get it as a subscription or consumable model. What are some of the trends with the consumer, I mean customers in the data center, because cloud and hybrid now is happening, and it's real growth. >> Oh, it's absolutely happening. So yeah, I mean, maybe a little bit of why this is happening, why we are having some of these integrations, you're absolutely right, cloud is happening, but really cloud means hybrid cloud or for some customers, multi-cloud hybrid because they're going to have two different cloud providers. But it's really hybrid cloud, so it's really distributed data center. And so the interesting piece happens, it's really two things that need to come together. There's this whole network automation analytics, which is, how do I get from my data center into a cloud and how do I treat this really like a utility. But that's the infrastructure. Then there's this front end, because what really drives this is the application refactoring. And this is where the application automation needs to come together with the infrastructure automation, and so that's one of the reasons why we have this integration with Terraform and the other one is like a Jenkins Pipeline tool. How do we actually take what the application was in the front end, and then seamlessly mix it into infrastructure, which is like a supernode, or infrastructure as a code thing. And that doesn't really matter whether that's in the cloud or on-prem, it has to work across. >> Automation is a huge thing. >> Yeah, and it's so nice to hear. Because Thomas, actually, when Cisco first came out with application-centric infrastructure, I kind of looked at it a little bit, I'm like, well, come on, how much are you actually tying to the application? Well, it was Cisco skating to where the puck was going. And I think the technology today and what you're talking about is closer to that application, and we have, we're here in the devNet zone, we're talking more about those pieces. Not just, oh, it's something that runs over the pipes and I've got buffers and traditional networking pieces. Would you say that's fair, that we're a little bit more application-centric today in 2020 than we might have been a couple of years ago? >> That's actually, that's a very good comment. I probably would spin it slightly different, because I'm the pragmatic guy. Yeah, do we want everything at the same time? Absolutely, right? But you do have to put some of the building blocks in place. And yes, application-centric really meant more we changed the configuration management scheme of infrastructure from thinking about network terms to using application terms. And that's really what application-centric means. It doesn't mean you change the application. It was more like, change the paradigm. How do you manage infrastructure to not just automate. Everybody does that. But actually have an abstraction layer that is meaningful to secure and apps people. And you're right, it takes time to get there. >> In the end, customers and users are looking to deploy applications faster, manage applications better. That's the whole purpose of building the data center, so that we can host the applications. So what we did is, we introduced constructs that can help you manage those applications better, deploy them faster, manage the life cycle of those applications faster, and that's why we introduced the concepts. And again, I mean, going back to your comment in terms of buffers and searches, we firmly believe that the plumbing which is the networking, has to be state of the art for us to abstract these things on top through software and exploit through software. So we have to have a best-in-class network and the searches and then we have to build the op section that we can exploit through the software means, right? >> And also, that highlights the partnerships that you mentioned. Companies like Splunk and HashiCorp, they're living in a multi-cloud environment. So, I shouldn't need to think about for some of them, oh, wait, is it hybrid cloud, public cloud A, or my data center, things like that. I'm going to have that common tooling and skill set across those environments. >> Right, because all the CIOs that we talk to, I mean, multi-cloud is a big part of their strategy. And they want to make sure that they have consistent security posture, whether it is on-prem, whether it is on multi-cloud, or like, consistent governance model across hybrid cloud. >> Yeah, that's a good point. I want to get your thoughts on that, because multi-cloud and hybrid we've both mentioned, it's interesting and what we were saying in our opening segment just earlier, multi-cloud is a business problem. It's what you have, it's a situation. Hybrid is technology, you're implementing new things for an operating model that hits core to what happens in your environment, whether it's software development, application awareness, network automation. So, they're two different things but they're kind of related, right? So you nail hybrid with public private or public on-premise, and then multi-cloud can be dealt with. This seems to be where you guys are fitting in, right? Because you can do the hybrid public, then you connect, just that's the outcome of the software. >> You're spot on, right. People use it and sometimes it means the same, and sometimes it's really not. And hybrid cloud is really around, how can I extend my data center to a public cloud infrastructure, right? And that's more of a technology discussion. What do I need to do to make that happen? Then there's the multi-cloud discussions really around how do I have consistent policy, because I want to get to a situation where I don't have to worry. And so I can deploy this, subscribers can deploy whenever I want to. And so you're right, they're two distinct things that need to happen. But I do, sorry, I do want to come back to your comment because I can take up the energy there. Users are common there, right? I mean for half these application developers that want to use tools like Terraform or Jenkins or... >> Yousuf: Ansible. >> Or Ansible or Splunk, all of them expect that they have an API. And they expect actually a network API. What they all prefer to have is something that makes sense from an application construct perspective. And so that's why we had to put something in place to make that work, right? Was it they weren't all there? That the application team could jump? Clearly not, but it's very clear if if I look, we are now, what? Six years into this? If I look back, I think it really jolted the market and I think it got everybody moving in that direction. >> Yeah and again, when we use the term application-centric infrastructure, the whole purpose is it is conducive to deploy applications faster and manage applications better. That's why, right? >> Wonder if you can dig in a little bit on the 400 gig? Tell us, you know, it's not just the next step function. We're trying to go more to the applications, you talk about these changes. So, what do people need to understand about 400 gig? You know, what's the same? What does this unlock for me? Does this tie in with all my WIFI 6 and 5G, and everything else that I'm doing? You know, where and when is this most important? >> Wow, let me take it maybe, on 400 gig. A, it is available and shipping. A little sneak preview, we're actually going to have a customer with us on Wednesday talk about what they do with 400 gig, in their European data center. It's a French customer. 400 gig is really an evolution. The way I look at it, right, I mean, we had 1 gig, 10 gig, 40, 100, 400, right? It's literally an evolution. And we're always looking back and saying, wow, do you really need that much bandwidth? Then later, you know, when you ask the question, you look like you missed it. Where is it deployed today? Service provider. No data arm, it's all in the service provider space. It's primarily what we call a large scale cloud provider. But also, the initial more tech DCs are looking at this. It's an evolution. How do we build 400 gig? The way we approach it is, this is not something special. Everything that we do today around ACI, everything we do around analytics has to work, right? Because customers are not building their own speeds. Customers are building around the operational model, and whatever they have has to work. Just because I've got my 4x speed, that has to work the same way. And so 400 gig for us, is really an extension on what we have. And you will see it. It plucks indirectly. So, can I build a 400 gig ACI fabric? Yes you can, if you want to. >> With all that horsepower, obviously the next logical question that comes to my mind is, okay, faster means more data, that means more potential fat-finger mistakes on configurating. But if you automate that away, you need AI, right? So, analytics and AI become interesting to that. How does that fit into the customer journey when they go, okay, I'm going faster. If I'm application-aware, is there an analytics angle on this? >> Ah, yes there is. >> No, you're absolutely right. I think based on the survey that we received, US corporations are spending billions of dollars due to the IT outages, right? And most of those outages are human errors, right? 43% of the IT corporations are spending 43% of their time in troubleshooting those outages. So I think it is very, very important, as the data centers are scaling, as the fabrics are getting automated, is that we grab them and provide them with the operation tools that can look smartly and proactively predict the network changes. They can assure that in turn the business intent has been translated into the network and proactively tell them what are the problems they might run into. And when they run into the problems, also intelligently explain to them what is the correlation of the events that they see on their log files and what is the root cause of the problem, right? >> Yeah, you've got a lot of data to work with there. And experience, right? That's where the predictive analytics-- >> Maybe let me expand it a little bit. So, I started off as saying we have this interesting extension and network insight which is precisely that, what Yousuf just elaborated on. It's really an engine that takes telemetry data and we're going actually one step further than everybody else that I know. Everybody talks telemetry, but they're talking about software telemetry, network state. We actually can marry that up with actual traffic data, in real time, and we can give you that correlation. And now I'm getting actually where you are kind of going to, is, I can actually tell you what's the root cause between why do I have a congestion, why do I have a problem and who is impacted, and who caused this? And I can actually predict the stuff. I can actually see this before it happens, and now help a customer. I can look at other customer experience and I do really more with machine learning. There's really an opportunity there. We're just scratching the surface, if you ask me. There's so much upside-- >> I mean, historically speaking, if you look at it, I mean, we had all the show commands in the world, which can tell you that what the (mumbles) looks like. What the CAM utilization is. But the co-relation, or the time-based co-relation was missing, in terms of when you're seeing some traffic degradation, you don't know whether it is dropped, dropped on what search, which type of traffic is getting affected. Brought to you by, Cohesity. >> Good morning everyone and welcome back to theCUBE's live coverage of Microsoft Ignite. We are here in the Orange County Convention Center. I'm your host Rebecca Knight, along with Stu Miniman. Stu, this is Microsoft's Big Show. 26,000 people from around the globe, all descending on Orlando. This is the big infrastructure show. Thoughts, impressions, now that we're on day two of a three day show. >> Yeah, Rebecca. Last year I had this feeling that it was a little bit too much talking about the Windows 10 transition and the latest updates to Office 365. I could certainly want to make sure that we really dug in more to what's going on with Azure, what's happening in 6the developer space. Even though they do have a separate show for developers, it's Microsoft build. They actually have a huge partner show. And so, Microsoft has a lot of shows. So it's, what is this show that is decades old? And really it is the combination of Microsoft as a platform today. Satya Nadella yesterday talked about empowering the world. This morning, Scott Hanselman was in a smaller theater, talking about app devs. And he came out and he's like, "Hey, developers, isn't it a little bit early for you this morning?" Everybody's laughing. He said, "Even though we're kicking off at 9:00 a.m., Eastern." He said, "That's really early, especially for anybody coming from the West Coast." He was wearing his Will Code For Tacos shirt. And we're going to have Scott on later today, so we'll talk about that. But, where does Microsoft sit in this landscape? Is something we've had. I spent a lot of time looking at the cloud marketplace. Microsoft has put themselves as the clear number two behind AWS. But trying to figure out because SaaS is a big piece of what Microsoft does. And they have their software estate in their customer relationship. So how many of those that are what we used to call window shops. And you had Windows people are going to start, Will it be .NET? Will it be other operating systems? Will it come into Azure? Where do they play? And the answer is, Microsoft's going to play a lot of places. And what was really kind of put on with the point yesterday is, it's not just about the Microsoft solutions, it is about the ecosystem, they really haven't embraced their role, very supportive of open source. And trust is something that I know both you and I have been pointing in on because, in the big tech market, Microsoft wants to stand up and say, "We are the most trusted out there. And therefore, turn to us and we will help you through all of these journeys." >> So you're bringing up so many great points and I want to now go through each and every one of them. So, absolutely, we are hearing that this is the kinder, gentler Microsoft, we had Dave Totten on yesterday. And he was, as you just described, just talking about how much Microsoft is embracing and supporting customers who are using a little bit of Microsoft here, a little bit of other companies. I'm not going to name names, but they're seemingly demanding. I just want best to breed, and this is what I'm going to do. And Microsoft is supporting that, championing that. And, of course we're seeing this as a trend in the broader technology industry. However, it feels different, because it's Microsoft doing this. And they've been so proprietary in the past. >> Yeah, well, and Rebecca, it's our job on theCUBE actually, I'm going to name names. (laughs) And actually Microsoft is-- >> Okay. >> Embracing of this. So, the thing I'm most interested in at the show was Azure Arc. And I was trying to figure out, is this a management platform? And at the end of the day really, it is, there's Kubernetes in there, and it's specifically tied to applications. So they're going to start with databases specifically. My understanding, SQL is the first piece and saying, it sounds almost like the next incarnation of platform as a service to our past. And say, I can take this, I can put it on premises in Azure or on AWS. Any of those environments, manage all of them the same. Reminds me of what I hear from VMware with Hangzhou. Vmworld, Europe is going on right now in Barcelona. Big announcement is to the relationship with VMware on Azure. If I got it right, it's actually in beta now. So, Arc being announced and the next step of where Microsoft and VMware are going together, it is not a coincidence. They are not severing the ties with VMware. VMware, of course partners with all the cloud providers, most notably AWS. Dave Totten yesterday, talked about Red Hat. You want Kubernetes? If you want OpenShift, if you are a Red Hat customer and you've decided that, the way I'm going to leverage and use and have my applications run, are through OpenShift, Microsoft's is great. And the best, most secure place to run that environment is on Azure. So, that's great. So Microsoft, when you talk about choice, when you talk about flexibility, and you talk about agility cause, it is kinder and gentler, but Satya said they have that tech intensity. So all the latest and greatest, the new things that you want, you can get it from Microsoft, but they are also going to meet you where you are. That was Jeremiah Dooley, the Azure advocate, said that, "There's, lots of bridges we need to make, Microsoft has lots of teams. It's not just the DevOps, it's not just letting the old people do their own thing, from your virtualization through your containerization and everything in between microservices server list, and the like. Microsoft has teams, they have partners. Sure that you could buy everything in Microsoft, but they know that there are lots of partners and pieces. And between their partners, their ecosystem, their channel, and their go-to-market, they're going to pull this together to help you leverage what you need to move your business forward. >> So, next I want to talk about Scott Hanselman who was up on the main stage, we're going to have him on the show and he was as you said, adorned in coder dude, attire with a cool t-shirt and snappy kicks. But his talk was app development for everyone. And this is really Microsoft's big push, democratizing computing, hey, anyone can do this. And Satya Nadella, as we've talked about on the show. 61% of technologist's jobs are not in the technology industry. So this is something that Microsoft sees as a trend that's happening in the employment market. So they're saying, "Hey, we're going to help you out here." But Microsoft is not a hardware company. So how does this really change things for Microsoft in terms of the products and services-- >> Well right, >> It offers. >> So really what we're talking about here, we're talking about developers right? 61% of jobs openings for developers are outside the tech sector. And the high level message that Scott had is your tools, your language, your apps. And what we have is, just as we were talking about choice of clouds, it's choice of languages. Sure they'd love to say .NET is wonderful, but you want your Java, your PHP, all of these options. And chances are, not only are you going to use many of them, but even if you're working on a total solution, different groups inside your company might be using them and therefore you need tools that can spam them. The interesting example they use was Chipotle. And if there's a difference between when you're ordering and going through the delivery service, and some of the back-end pieces, and data needs to flow between them, and it can't be, "Oh wait, I've got silos of my data, I've got silos of all these other environments." So, developer tools are all about, having the company just work faster and work across environments. I was at AnsibleFest show earlier this year. And, Ansible is one of those tools that actually, different roles where you have to have the product owner, the developer, or the the operations person. They all have their way into that tool. And so, Microsoft's showing some very similar things as to, when I build something, it's not, "Oh, wait, we all chose this language." And so many of the tools was, " Okay, well, I had to standardize on something." But that didn't fit into what the organization needed. So I need to be able to get to what they all had. Just like eventually, when I'm picking my own taco, I can roll it, bowl it, soft or hard shell-- >> It was a cool analogy. >> And choose all my toppings in there. So it is Taco Tuesday here-- >> Yes. >> At Microsoft Ignite and the developers like their choices of tools, just like they like their tacos. >> And they like their extra guac. So going back to one of the other points you made at the very opening. And this is the competitive dynamic that we have here. We had David Davis and Scott Lowe on yesterday from a ActualTech Media. Scott was incredibly bullish about Microsoft. And saying it could really overtake AWS, not tomorrow, but within the next decade. Of course, the choice for JEDI certainly could accelerate that. What do you make of it? I mean, do you think that's still pie in the sky here? AWS is so far ahead. >> So look, first of all, when you look at the growth rates, first of all, just to take the actual number, we know what AWS's, revenue is. Last quarter, AWS did $9 billion. And they're still growing at about a 35% clip. When I look at Microsoft, they have their intelligent cloud bucket, which is Azure, Windows Server, SQL Server and GitHub. And that was 10.8 billion. And you say, "Oh, okay, that's really big." But last year, Azure did about $12 billion dollars. So, AWS is still two to three times larger when you look at infrastructure as a service. But SaaS hugely important piece of what's going on in the cloud opportunity. AWS really is more of the platform and infrastructure service, they absolutely have some of the PaaS pieces. Azure started out as PaaS and has this. So you're trying to count these buckets, and Azure is still growing at, last quarter was 64%. So if you look at the projection, is it possible for Azure to catch up in the next three years? Well, Azure's growth rate is also slowing down, so I don't think it matters that much. There is a number one and a number two, and they're both clear, valid choices for a customer. And, this morning at breakfast, I was talking to a customer and they are very heavily on Microsoft shop. But absolutely, they've got some AWS on the side. They're doing Azure, they've got a lot of Azure, being here at our Microsoft show. And when I go to AWS, even when I talked to the companies that are all in on AWS, " Oh, you got O 365?" "Of course we do." "Oh, if you're starting to do O 365, are there any other services that you might be using out of Azure?" "Yeah, that's possible." I know Google is in the mix. Ali Baba's in the mix. Oracle, well, we're not going to talk about Oracle Cloud, but we talked about Oracle, because they will allow their services to run on Azure specifically. We talked about that a lot yesterday, especially how that ties into JEDI. So, look, I think it is great when we have a healthy competitive marketplace. Today really, it is a two horse race. It is, AWS and Azure are the main choices for customers. Everyone else is really a niche player. Even a company like IBM, there's good solutions that they have, but they play in a multi cloud world. Google has some great data services, and absolutely a important player when you talk about multi cloud for all they've done with Kubernetes and Istio. I'm going to be at Kube Con in a couple of weeks and Google is front and center there. But if you talk about the general marketplace, Microsoft has a lot of customers, they had a lot of applications and therefore, can they continue to mature that market and grow their environment? Absolutely. AWS has so many customers, they have the marketplace is stronger. It's an area that I want to dig in a little bit more at this show is the Azure Marketplace, how much we talked about the ecosystem. But, can I just procure through the cloud and make it simpler? Big theme we've talked about is, cloud in the early days was supposed to be cheap and simple. And it is neither of those things. So, how do we make it easier, so that we can go from the 20% of applications in the public cloud, up to 50% or more? Because it is not about all everything goes to the public cloud, but making customers put the applications and their data in the right place at the right time with the right services. And then we haven't even talked about edge computing which Microsoft has a big push on, especially with their partners. We talked to HP, a little bit about that yesterday. But really the surface area that this show and Microsoft covers is immense and global. >> It is indeed, and we are going, this is our second day of three days of coverage and we're going to be getting into all of those things. Happy on a day to thank you for being here. >> No, man, it's an absolute pleasure. Me, Max. It's It's kind of crazy how our relationship has evolved throughout the years. Ah, start with Diem. You know, that's how it usually goes, the way your T shirt and he's got hair. So I wish I was that God, like I got it down here, but I got it out talk. So don't worry, Max. I'm going to make you a T shirt and I'm sending Teo. You said >> make a T shirt. I >> will wear >> until you plant cast with you again. >> Be careful with the pick. Might be >> way careful with that. Wait. Speaking of that, Corey, I mean, before we went on air here, you have a little story about your beard. And not to say you're only known for the beard, but the beer definitely is a staple in the slashing. Your appearance give me back for that. I want to hear it, and they will dive into some of the science. >> Yeah, man. So as far as the beard, I mean, it started at you. Maybe we're on a Spanish tour went overseas, and I did. One of those crazy handlebar mustache is right. I mean, it was gnarly, but being overseas just didn't shave, right? I mean, we're there for almost a week and a half, and I just started growing out the stubble. And then people are like, keep it going. And so I kept going and we were winning a lot of games. And then we end up winning a championship. And so it became like the tournament beard or became like the season beard. And so I just kept rolling it from there, and yeah, that's that's kind of where the beard is stated for now. And then when I realized, like if I could, it almost looks like a cancer patient. So I needed a key because he's blond eyebrows, man from five feet away. It looks like I'm ball period like I can't grow here. So, yeah, that's where the beard states is at this point. >> Well, Iet's fifty. I'm getting mine going. I'm not going to your caliber. I keep it trimmed, but it makes me feel like I'm a scientist or something. If I have a beard, makes you more intelligent, but getting off the topic here. When it comes to developing anybody, people say, you know, athletes, athletes, athletes athletes are what zero point zero zero one percent of population when it comes to developing anybody at all. We got talking about the bass aspects of human movement human development. You have an interesting take on this, and I don't want to spoil it for the listeners. I'd rather have you say it first, cause I'll just bastardized and screw it up. You're going to take on developing anybody regardless if they're an athlete or just general population, >> right? I mean, if you look through human evolution one or two things that we used to do, I used to farm. We used to kill things with our hands. We used to climb, you know, we used to throw things, you know? I mean, look at the the early Olympics, right? I mean, that's basically what the events wass. He wrestled someone. You ran faster than someone. You ran further than someone, and you threw some things. I and basically that's what human capacity is. So my goal before we actually trained them to be better athletes, is to make them better humans first, because if I can express their ability to be a better human, then they will be able to express their ability to be a better athlete. >> Joshua and with those movements, selections. If you have unique choice food people who don't follow up Instagram better weigh on your instagram handle at the end. But the selections of exercises you pick, it's not traditional a sense. Let's load a bar up. Let's do a hand claim you really take ownership of different shaped objects for that way, whether it be a yoke, whether it be a kettle bell, how do you come up with the most movements? Elections? What goes into that decision making? And for any individual out there, whether they are fast ball player who's seven one or a guy who's five eight, how do you decide which of those implements are best fitted for you? >> Well, everything that shaped the way I believe is one hundred ten percent based off my environment. And look, I played college basketball. Don't look at my stats. I was not that good, but I trained in or I've played with, and now for ten years I've trained that basketball athletic population, so you can imagine with me. Okay, I'm five foot ten. Very average, at best, especially with my links, man. Now imagine six foot six, but a seven foot two weeks man and all those things that I was good at, clean snatched jerk. You know, I was a purist in the beginning. I mean, of course I was right. I was just learning what strength iss How to be strong. Now, I'm trying to imagine further. Like, how do I have impact? How do I have quote unquote transfer? What? I'm trying to load these freaks. I mean, these guys are not normal human beings, right? They got seven foot two wings fans and short torso, so their levers are crazy. So now I'm asking them to do the same things that got me strong. Being at five. Ten, it just doesn't make much sense to me now, Not saying they don't have the capacity to do it mean help. Be honest with you. Some of my best weightlifters actually been seven foot tall, But that being said, if there's a way I can load them, that makes a lot more sense. That's easy to teach. I could do it often, and it's right in their comfort zone now, not comfort as in like we're not training hard, but like in their center of mass, where they can actually manipulate loads heavy loads at that with decent speeds. Then, yeah, I'm going to do that. So, for instance, we look at a bar bell, clean snatches all good. Why can't we do the same intent with a trap door? I mean, we could still pull. We could still triple extend and then we can still catch in that power position. The only thing that changes is the complexity of the movement. Now I'm not manipulating myself around a straight bar bell. It's in my centre of mass. And now I, Khun Express quote unquote force. Ah, lot more efficient, Effective. So now I can load it more loaded faster and do less teaching. Yeah, I do that. That makes a lot of things So that's really what it came from. And then to be honest with you, But how do you experience that light? How do you know a seven foot feels like? How do you know? And so you know, I've dabbled town some ways too. Open up my consciousness, if you will, to allow me to feel that ord, allow the imagination, my creativity to tryto understand what that could feel like. And then, of course, obviously feedback from my athletes. But I mean, why you always see, like the old school dues were just like, Oh, this is weak. This is squad. We we box what we what do we do? Whatever to get strong. But it's like, you know, it makes sense. If you're five foot six, it doesn't make much sense if your seven foot tall so you've got a truly find ways to experience it yourself. And now by the means that you do that probably not going to talk about on this podcast. But the way I did it work. >> Yeah, well, we'll refrain from diving that specific. I'd appreciate it on because to each his own one of the things you mentioned like talking about Hooper's I played basketball. I played your Batch three point shooter. Anyone's listening, too, By the way, when my feet are set, I'm not. I'm not an athlete, but I could shoot the shit out of basketball. I'LL be very blunt with you. I've >> been on the receiving end of that on one of our own game. You don't have to talk when you busted my ask way >> down to like. A lot of basketball players are bad movers, and what I mean by that it's their very good when you put a ball in their hands. That is something you talked about, too. But when you get them in a dance room right there, a lot different than football players and I mean by that is you don't see a bad end zone celebration, right? Want touchdown dances look really good, Odell Beckham being very soon and a lot of it's because those patterns are done without a ball in their hand. This is my opinion and they're very primal and natural with a minute and basketball everything's doing the ball in their hand and then when they start to move, especially because they're developing this, you starts. We're like a third rate. Now they have to only play basketball. And typically you don't play football and basketball, especially football. The high level, because you know you prepping for the basketball season itself. >> You get that deal in Scotland. Shit, bro, >> You have to play basketball for every waking hour the next fifteen years to get there. I'm kidding, but I'm thinking about my head is we're not exposed to those different movement. Parents were stuck in this ninety foot unless you're how light is forty six feet, something like that with court that really constrains how we move. And then you put someone in a waiting room where all the son of dealing with external loads and very unique movement patterns you get guys who just looked walking and I think you talked about this on different podcast, but I want to get into a little bit. Here was, I think so. That stems from our coaching of a young athletes and our physical education that we no longer does. Have we used to have back in the day and how that's really affecting athletes as they get older. >> I couldn't agree more. I mean, I get these quote unquote specialized athletes. And to be honest with you, I don't have athletes like I have guys who have a basketball in their hand. They got really long levers and they have some skill, right? They have some skill to be able to go from point A to point B and put on orange round ball into a cellar. That's that's so happen to be ten foot off the ground. That's what I have. I don't have a true athlete who can pick things up off the floor who could sit down on the floor and stand up, who can throw things who can sprint, who could jump onto things. I mean, some of the best vertical jumps that you see in basketball are not even close to what you would see in football and track and field. When you think this is a sport with the high flyers counter movement, jump hands on hips averages that I've seen on teams eighteen inches and everybody is like Oh, that's terrible But that's a true counter movement jump with long levers. So now if we add some momentum to that and add a seven foot two wingspan and then all of a sudden their elbows above the ramp. Right? So that's the difference we get. We see this a NRI or this false thought, or this false vision of what athleticism is because they're so long. But in reality. And then you put a bunch of cornerbacks out there that would be really special to see, because these are guys that are like five foot ten and the most explosive fast dude you've ever seen. There's don't have the skill to play basketball. So you know, with the way we are, physical education is set up now, obviously has been chopped in half, half, half so no more education. Physical education is what we get to. They only play one sport. They sit in chairs that they're not really made to be. They live in this wart western society where every chair they sit in Is that it? His ninety, which for them is more like this, right? And then they get up and down on these beds that their feet are hanging off of. So I don't know what sleep looks like for that. And if you saw my guys get on an airplane, a commercial airplane, you would be cringing the entire time because they're literally bundled up like this. And so not on ly. Are we trying to correct childhood development? I'm trying to correct what they deal with on a daily basis. Just walking the class. We watching my guys duck through door frames constantly. It is like some some of them are guards and they're ducking through frames. And you're just like I don't know how you've made it this far without knocking yourself out. So there's so many that it's really all about the environment and her. When I've trained my athletes, it's all about giving them the environment they have never had. So that's why we utilize the resting room. The gymnastics room. It's soft had so they know, so they don't necessarily fear the ground. They don't fear their interactions gravity. So now I'm giving them the ability to learn how to change levels. You know, little guys. So I don't see six foot ten guys wrestling, right? So I have an opportunity. Now they learn how to interact and change levels, and then even more so you put somebody with them. So now we're like pushing and pulling, just like you see in football. So now they know where they put their feet. So now we're not stepping on feet constantly looking. I mean, God, Hey, these guys are like because sixteen seventeen shoes like, of course, I'm going to step on each other's speed. But if they have that awareness in that sense of where other people are, then maybe they don't make that misstep. Or maybe they get their self out of harm's way and then even more so just learning how to fall. They learn how to fall properly from standing toe floor transitions. Then, when they jumped through the air at forty two inch words, whatever you see, that's make believe for you. Switch vertical right word, but and then they get hit in the air, and now they've got to figure out the most effective way. Not the break there. Nash. Well, most of the guys are going to do everything they can to stay on their feet. Well, that's where you want to get blown out, right? So now if I can give them a tumbling strategy, so now that they can interact with the floor a lot more smoother, athletic, well, then maybe they have a chance to not get hurt and be be back in the action, right? So it's performance enhancing as well as injury mitigation. >> I >> know that. I mean, I don't know where to begin. I have about nine comments off that. First. I love the idea of talking about how these guys are living in a world built for some one, five, ten. I'm six two and Kelsey, my girlfriend. But, hey, can you reach above and grab the top? Can apostle whatever I'm like? Yeah, Okay. But you look at a guy until you actually play hoops. I think, and really appreciate how big these dudes are. You play. It's a guy who's seven one. You look at him and go, Oh, my gosh, like that's at a different human. And then you know his shoe size next to you and you shake his hand and you get to the other side of his hand. You start to understand, like, who we dealing with here, right? You look at these, you know the body needs to heal when it goes into a stress or whatever, and we're putting these guys in positions that the body would not otherwise deem for recovery right now, like this call. Time out. Is that the funniest thing? MBA timeouts. Aside from LeBron James, that's got the nine foot chair right? These guys come out and these will stools that are too small for meaning, and >> so they're not really >> rusting. And you got a dude who's trying to recover his heart rate, but really the whole time, he's in a hip flexion. He's never been in the past, you know, thirty years, right? And if you're thinking about really taking care of an athlete, we spend so much time in the weight room and all this great stuff we can do. So Muchmore. If we had a liberty, too, I use we usually more like you, um, to you, then develop an environment that conducive to them. I know University. Kentucky did that. If you look at their dorm rooms, they had ESPN going on two years ago when they built at the new facility. For the basketball players, the sinks were higher, the magical tired, they were longer. And if you ever wash a guy who's seven foot dragging on the water fountain, I mean the amount of spinal flexion he has to go under. It's ridiculous. The guy's curling up in a C. And I mean, that's crazy to think about because the whole time on the way we were talking about how do we get these guys in a position that they can function successfully? And right now it's like optimally because obviously would have been something we did fifteen years ago to get in a position, right? But how do we get them to be successful? So I pose the question to your court. I'm gonna give you the keys to the castle. The kingdom. Okay, Philip, um, maybe not the whole environment. But there's three things you like to change the outside of the weight room that you had the crystal ball and you could go either back in time more just socially. Okay. I want to change his guys. You know, the size of his car. You know that the chair he sits and we're three things that you pick and dio >> number one. I would get them involved and dance or martial arts as their first sport. That would be probably number one so or gymnastics something. I don't care how tall you are like Who cares if you're not trying Win a gold medal at three, Right? Is just learning how to do those things right? Understanding your body number two. I would change how physical education is and in western society, um, and then number three. Let's give you something actual physical number three. If I could make what? I >> got some for you. Well, you're thinking, OK, I got you want to think your third for me? Basketball players eat horribly. You're so single, teacher. Yeah, basketball players, at least by team. And I will make this universal blanket statement. They just don't like to eat for some reason. Right? Who for? Three hours and drinking game and call it good. And I don't get it like I have a fat ass. My play. I gained weight in season. Really? Team he'll know what a food I take over which you're pulling their postgame meals. And that's when they remove the snack girl. Remember the snack role when, uh, >> you know, you have todo I had Taco Bell, bro. Like we won. We got talking about, you know? So I asked the level Appalachia, which we suck. >> I think I'm going to go a little. Can't you apologize? We're going to go play and that's a D three hoops. That's finest. We're rolling to a game. It's up north took a four hour drive and we stopped at the rude crib an hour and a half before taking a corner booth buffet of ribs. They got a bunch of island boys here. The rib crib you bring up platters were basically, you know, and capacity. And when they get like five points because our center had to pull out the throat at halftime. >> Yeah, it is. Did you ever have to drive the team ban? Because I have ways in the backseat in the bag who thought that was, like level once again, level athlete, that unreal. But I would say that the third thing Don't be wrong. Yes, food. But if there's a way, I mean, if there's a truly economical way across the board to just look, it got health, we could do that, don't care. But I can change your environment that could change your internal environment and will, And the number one is if I can just poof your gut and I can look at everything, then that will be the number one, because just a little moving world. But I don't know how you're absorbing it. I don't know what's going on. And then you wantto talk about these kids that you know, a phD or these kids that are super restless. Well, I think it starts with the gut, because if you're got health sucks, so does this. So that would be the third thing. >> No, that's crazy That way. May I have a little bit of experience is our company. I don't deal with the actual read now that the things I've learned and seeing the idea of taking that integrated approach. So hey, let's actually look at your stomach. Yes, you have to collect your poop three times a day, and I'm sorry. If you're going to do that, you can start to look at what you produced and way of excreting and whether or not you're absorbing what you need to absorb. And we start looking at injuries and no tendon, health and muscle tissue, everything as a holistic approach. What? We gotta look at the internal environment if any of our environments messed up inside and we're trying to impose a stressor on the body. But we have no idea what the internal systems like, and you have certain deficiencies or certain aspects that your lack and these were certain areas where it again people go, Oh, that's not scientific. There's no study. Well, unfortunately, if you understand complex systems and their dynamic interactions and not to get too detail, I'Ll explain it as simple as I can. But what happens is we have an outcome like a strange angle, and we say, Oh, and go weak angle get hurt, right? Well, kind of grooming. Or maybe it's ankle week. That's a risk factor. Athlete didn't sleep enough the past three nights. Risk factor Athlete had some sort of physical contact during the game. That critter there system risk factor athlete. Nutritionally, it wasn't recovering from previous workouts and games. Risk factors so happens of all these risk factors, and that's just a very there's no all the risk factors. A lot involved, all but these risk factors come about and then we have the probabilistic nature of something toe happen. So oh, how likely is it that something bad will go wrong and we see the last straw on the camel's back sprain an ankle and we go a week. But maybe it's didn't sleep enough Ankle week. All this other stuff and that ankle sprain. For people interested in complex systems, it's called an emergent pattern. So there's a common pattern that occurs when you have things go wrong. So if the money C l it's like, Oh, gluten medias is weak knee Val Agus. All right, you're a muscular control all these things that go into and nothing can pinpoint it. So if we're including these bomber, you know about mechanical factors and Eve Alvis, why aren't we including some internal factors like gut health Or, you know, the blood wood for the micro nutrient efficient season? Yes, I know I'm not versed enough to speak on micronutrient deficiencies and our interactions off, you know, health and whatnot. But something as simple as college in environments haven't adequate vitamin C for, you know, ten and healing instead of, you know, repair is obviously a factor. And so when we start looking the bottom, we gotta look at the big picture. It's not just how your knee bends. It's not how you shoot a jump shot. It's not how you land every time. >> Where are you? Our body is so much more resilient and durable than you. Give it credit for me. We've survived as a species. We're a very long time. You're very harsh conditions and you're going to tell me it's that one jump that got you one job. One job is the one that Oh, that needs a little dalliance. That's the one that got you. I mean, if you super slow mo A lot of these great expressions of physical capacity in sport it was you would be like, Oh, my God, they're neither this there that But in reality, like that's I'm close to the reason why they like break or don't Break. And Jordan shallow, brilliant dude, He gave me this metaphor. He was saying to Philip, a pond, Well, it's like this fungus that will Philip a pond and it doubles its size every day. So if it starts off it like, you know, point two, then the next day be point for and he asked me, he's like, Okay, if it's going to Philip in thirty days, Philip, the whole pond, What's the day? It's half full. Then I thought for a second it took me a lot longer than I should have thought about it. But he's like, but he an injection goes day twenty nine. I >> don't want an answer, by the way. >> Yeah, was like Day twenty nine I. That's why I look at the human body like that is literally the last thing and then pull. And so it's all these. We could have had all these interventions from day to today twenty eight or day twenty nine. Even the notes that one just last. Ah, strong. The camel's back to just there goes, you know, And that's what's great about being in the collegiate setting. And being a Stanford is we have a lot of safety nets for our safety, and that's if you will. So we try to have as many quote unquote KP eyes and objective measurements to give us an idea of what could possibly happen. But in reality, it's still the dynamic environment, so I don't understand. Like I can't account for school. I can't account for their sleep. I mean, we could through, like, grouper or or whatever, but it's not realistic and thine and are setting and in their gut hell's like way picking up poop. Three times a day. They were not drawn blood once. We're not doing these things. So unless we're doing that, then you're just trying to create most resilient, durable human beings so they can withstand the stressors some more than others. But hopefully have a successful season. >> No, that's like I hate to break it to people. We don't know what we're doing. We're doing our best. I think chase Wells with him. A Stanford. Get a great line, he said. We can't guarantee success. We can almost guarantee you're not guaranteed to fail. And what I mean by that is that you can't always KP eyes and really, we're looking at. If you jump nine inches, we're probably not going to be very good basketball unless you're seven. No, right. And so we're looking at the human system as a means of understanding what is going on really lagged behind in regards to your performance assessment and what might be hindering you in regards to launch into no tracking? Can I get a little bit of data? A lot? The way explain it is kind of like I don't ask my girlfriend Kelsey, how she's doing. Once a week, you know. I asked her every day and why I asked that every day is to realize, you know, all my clothes that I left out pissing her off. You know, I did. I forget that we're supposed to go on a date last night. You know, I might not have forgot a wallet last night. We went to dinner from now on, Accent, all supposed to buy. But that's a true story. WeII >> brought up. I mean, that's the most important thing is you gotta have feedback daily, right? And wait here. It's really simple. We take a controlled environment, do some things in it before they go into a dynamic environment, which is basketball games of basketball practice. So what we do is we call that microdot. It's our way of training. Every day, in some form or fashion, these individuals come into their work, their human capacity, a Siri's, if you will. Then after that, they go into their B series, which is complex. This is really what I know what's going on. I don't get me wrong when they walk in to get their weight, are joking or making eye contact and get that handshake. How firm is that handshake thes air, All the quantitative things that I'm trying to pick up as they're coming through the door. Then you watch them say We're hitting clean, complex and they're going through the motions and their consulate changing grip or or the pool isn't looking too good, and any sharp today will boom. That's my control Now. It's not the most objective feedback, but at least it's a constant. And so that's my way of having once against safety nets from a safety nets and then weekly or depending on how many games we have that we do, our force plate jumps. So once again, another safety net, and then we have our connects on day. So our GPS data that they do on the practice gym once again any one of those in isolation doesn't tell me much. But if I have a bunch of them, then I can at least paint a better picture from quantitative qualitative, and then I can go and knit. Pick what I think they're intervention may need to be, and so it's not going to be perfect, not even close, but as long as you have a constant and yours is beautiful. Like you said, Just something simple. You get daily. Hey, how are you doing? And you know how they express that. I'm doing good. I'm doing good. I'm cool. I'm great. Like, you know, what there was in flux is are like, you know what? They're how they're truly feeling. Just based off that one question alone. But once again, if you can set up your system or your program or whatever toe have safety nets for your safety nets, then I think you can You can catch a >> lot of those along the way. >> Yeah. No, that makes sense. It's how you provide context to a situation. And the more information that we can apply that we didn't classifier more to a system like jumping is, you know, your lower body strength and your verbal expressions, your most emotional state on DH, maybe even sweep or other things that go into that, the more we could understand what's actually happening to the person. So I was kind of really bad for a second. You said some of micro dose in and term overdose. You refer into training a little bit often. Yep. And Corey is well known for this and for those at home listening, I'm going to my best to explain it. Short weeks. I got a question off of it. If you know, explains it will stay here for another hour and a half because great to listen to. But I want Teo a little bit of a different direction off of athletics about it. Firstly, micro doses the idea that we're applying a moderate level toe, low level stressor consistently, and that adaptation occurs from the aggravation off those dresses over a period of time. So we're never going to Hi, we're never going to low. And the idea is that training in the weight room is only one small piece of your life. They even programmed High Day, and you don't sleep that night or you have emotional stressor for your case, your practice. Then all of a sudden, that high, big, magnified and starts spilling over the bar and becomes too much the idea of micro dozing, especially a non controlled external environment where it's called life, and we're trying to apply enough that you can handle. If someone's feeling good, then they can push a little bit that they themselves. Now My question for you, Cory, is I love an athletic sense. I also see it being very applicable to anyone out there general population and especially in terms of I got two things. Us too. In terms of one, someone learned a movement. You get a chance to do it often and daily and someone who wants to learn how to be in the weight room. And secondly, because there are, let's say we do it eight out of ten days. If you only miss one day, you're only missing ten percent of your entire workout, right? So instead of doing looking at this whole one workout one day, you look at like a ten day period. If you got eight days of pick from and you just can't do one, you only missed ten percent versus if you only had five days of pick one and you miss one, you missed twenty percent, right? And so now we have the ability to be more flexible in our environment. So how does that fit in like a general population? If it was my dad or my girlfriend trying to learn howto use some of this micro dose in the weight room. How do you plan? >> So one hundred percent with micro dozing. The reason why it came about was it was a solution to a problem. My problem is I don't have enough exposure to my guys. So how do I create more training frequency? And now we got rid of warm up something that was just kind of getting them ready for practice. That kind of don't care about it. The coach hated seen me do it. I personally hated doing it. So now it was a solution. What it turned into was motor learning. Now you want to learn how to train, will do it all the time. So that's where complex comes in. It's the value of orcs work, right? So basically, you take a bar bill and you do every movement that you would do in a weight room, in some sense, in one set, so you'd hinge You do a hip flexion. You do a press, do a pool. If I break down each one of those into isolation, it would look like already else Squad, Polish, military, press or row, those air all movements that you would do and if you separated each exercise in an isolation you would go more resistance on, just like you would see in general fitness, right? Like we're going to do three sets of ten on bench press or three sets a tent on back squad. Well, that's great. How about we just put it all in one and now we have more exposure. So now I'm learning how to do the movements, and then you can't tell me that doing one thing once a week is actually going to make you learn the movement. So now you learn those little small video sequences that you see with thirty year experience power lifters who truly understand, like, move from body, this foot stance, or this is how I start to hinge here within my squat X degree. And that's how they perfected is because they have so much exposure to it. So we're doing the same thing. We're just trying to create exposure at lower thresholds and and in doing it often now as faras general population, what's the number one concern? But I don't have enough time. Oh, really? You don't have a thirty minute today, twenty to thirty minutes a day to not kind ofwork. Now. Every day I call B s. I say You just don't want to train. So that's where my producing to me is beautiful in the general population is because it's living the way you start your day. It's lunch, or it's when you get off work. Perfect. You can pick any of those three slots twenty, thirty minutes. You can eat and shower and get backto work or before work. So you can't tell me that everybody doesn't have that situation. So now, creating training frequency, you're getting enough volume throughout the week. Now we have on and then most importantly, like you brought up if I just had to miss that one day, it's ten percent of my training like it's not well, only train twice a week, So fifty percent of my training is gone. So that's where I think it's beautiful. And that's where he could work from general population to the most elite athletes in the world and the reason why I say the most elite athletes in the world because I just so happen to train to of So I do it with all these populations

Jeff Frick here with theCUBE. We're at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco at the IBM Chief Data Officer Strategy Summit Spring 2017. It's a mouthful, it's 170 people here, all high-level CXOs learning about data, and it's part of an ongoing series that IBM is doing around chief data officers and data, part of a big initiative with Cognitive and Watson, I'm sure you've heard all about it, Watson TV if nothing else, if not going to the shows, and we're really excited to have the drivers behind this activity with us today, also Peter Burris from Wikibon, chief strategy officer, but we've got Caitlin Lepech who's really driving this whole show. She is the Communications and Client Engagement Executive, IBM Global Chief Data Office. That's a mouthful, she's got a really big card. And Cortnie Abercrombie, who I'm thrilled to see you, seen her many, many times, I'm sure, at the MIT CDOIQ, so she's been playing in this space for a long time. She is a Cognitive and Analytics Offerings leader, IBM Global Business. So first off, welcome. >> Thank you, great to be here. >> Thanks, always a pleasure on theCUBE. It's so comfortable, I forget you guys aren't just buddies hanging out. >> Before we jump into it, let's talk about kind of what is this series? Because it's not World of Watson, it's not InterConnect, it's a much smaller, more intimate event, but you're having a series of them, and in the keynote is a lot of talk about what's coming next and what's coming in October, so I don't know. >> Let me let you start, because this was originally Cortnie's program. >> This was a long time ago. >> 2014. >> Yeah, 2014, the role was just starting, and I was tasked with can we identify and start to build relationships with this new line of business role that's cropping up everywhere. And at that time there were only 50 chief data officers worldwide. And so I-- >> Jeff: 50? In 2014. >> 50, and I can tell you that earnestly because I knew every single of them. >> More than that here today. >> I made it a point of my career over the last three years to get to know every single chief data officer as they took their jobs. I would literally, well, hopefully I'm not a chief data officer stalker, but I basically was calling them once I'd see them on LinkedIn, or if I saw a press announcement, I would call them up and say, "You've got a tough job. "Let me help connect you with each other "and share best practices." And before we knew, it became a whole summit. It became, there were so many always asking to be connected to each other, and how do we share best practices, and what do you guys know as IBM because you're always working with different clients on this stuff? >> And Cortnie and I first started working in 2014, we wrote IBM's first paper on chief data officers, and at the time, there was a lot of skepticism within our organization, why spend the time with data officers? There's other C-suite roles you may want to focus on instead. But we were saying just the rise of data, external data, unstructured data, lot of opportunity to rise in the role, and so, I think we're seeing it reflected in the numbers. Again, first summit three years ago, 30 participants. We have 170 data executives, clients joining us today and tomorrow. >> And six papers later, and we're goin' strong still. >> And six papers later. >> Exactly, exactly. >> Before we jump into the details, some of the really top-level stuff that, again, you talked about with John and David, MIT CDOIQ, in terms of reporting structure. Where do CDOs report? What exactly are they responsible for? You covered some of that earlier in the keynote, I wonder if you can review some of those findings. >> Yeah, that was amazing >> Sure, I can share that, and then, have Cortnie add. So, we find about a third report directly to the CEO, a third report through the CIO's office, sort of the traditional relationship with CIOs, and then, a third, and what we see growing quite a bit, are CXOs, so functional or business line function. Originally, traditionally it was really a spin-off of CIO, a lot of technical folks coming up, and we're seeing more and more the shift to business expertise, and the focus on making sure we're demonstrating the business impact these data programs are driving for our organization. >> Yeah, it kind of started more as a data governance type of role, and so, it was born out of IT to some degree because, but IT was having problems with getting the line of business leaders to come to the table, and we knew that there had to be a shift over to the business leaders to get them to come and share their domain expertise because as every chief data officer will tell you, you can't have lineage or know anything about all of this great data unless you have the experts who have been sitting there creating all of that data through their processes. And so, that's kind of how we came to have this line of business type of function. >> And Inderpal really talked about, in terms of the strategy, if you don't start from the business strategy-- >> Inderpal? >> Yeah, on the keynote. >> Peter: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. >> You are really in big risk of the boiling the ocean problem. I mean, you can't just come at it from the data first. You really have to come at it from the business problem first. >> It was interesting, so Inderpal was one of our clients as a CEO three times prior to rejoining IBM a year ago, and so, Cortnie and I have known him-- >> Express Scripts, Cambia. >> Exactly, we've interviewed him, featured him in our research prior, too, so when he joined IBM in December a year ago, his first task was data strategy. And where we see a lot of our clients struggle is they make data strategy an 18-month, 24-month process, getting the strategy mapped out and implemented. And we say, "You don't have the time for it." You don't have 18 months to come to data, to come to a data strategy and get by and get it implemented. >> Nail something right away. >> Exactly. >> Get it in the door, start showing some results right away. You cannot wait, or your line of business people will just, you know. >> What is a data strategy? >> Sure, so I can say what we've done internally, and then, I know you've worked with a lot of clients on what they're building. For us internally, it started with the value proposition of the data office, and so, we got very clear on what that was, and it was the ability to take internal, external data, structured, unstructured, and pull that together. If I can summarize it, it's drive to cognitive business, and it's infusing cognition across all of our business processes internally. And then, we identified all of these use cases that'll help accelerate, and the catalyst that will get us there faster. And so, Client 360, product catalog, et cetera. We took data strategy, got buy-in at the highest levels at our organization, senior vice president level, and then, once we had that support and mandate from the top, went to the implementation piece. It was moving very quickly to specify, for us, it's about transforming to cognitive business. That then guides what's critical data and critical use cases for us. >> Before you answer, before you get into it, so is a data strategy a means to cognitive, or is it an end in itself? >> I would say it, to be most effective, it's a succinct, one-page description of how you're going to get to that end. And so, we always say-- >> Peter: Of cognitive? >> Exactly, for us, it's cognitive. So, we always ask very simple question, how is your company going to make money? Not today, what's its monetization strategy for the future? For us, it's coming to cognitive business. I have a lot of clients that say, "We're product-centric. "We want to become customer, client-centric. "That's our key piece there." So, it's that key at the highest level for us becoming a cognitive business. >> Well, and data strategies are as big or as small as you want them to be, quite frankly. They're better when they have a larger vision, but let's just face it, some companies have a crisis going on, and they need to know, what's my data strategy to get myself through this crisis and into the next step so that I don't become the person whose cheese moved overnight. Am I giving myself away? Do you all know the cheese, you know, Who Moved My Cheese? >> Every time the new iOS comes up, my wife's like-- >> I don't know if the younger people don't know that term, I don't think. >> Ah, but who cares about them? >> Who cares about the millenials? I do, I love the millenials. But yes, cheese, you don't want your cheese to move overnight. >> But the reason I ask the question, and the reason why I think it's important is because strategy is many things to many people, but anybody who has a view on strategy ultimately concludes that the strategic process is what's important. It's the process of creating consensus amongst planners, executives, financial people about what we're going to do. And so, the concept of a data strategy has to be, I presume, as crucial to getting the organization to build a consensus about the role the data's going to play in business. >> Absolutely. >> And that is the hardest. That is the hardest job. Everybody thinks of a data officer as being a technical, highly technical person, when in fact, the best thing you can be as a chief data officer is political, very, very adept at politics and understanding what drives the business forward and how to bring results that the CEO will get behind and that the C-suite table will get behind. >> And by politics here you mean influencing others to get on board and participate in this process? >> Even just understanding, sometimes leaders of business don't articulate very well in terms of data and analytics, what is it that they actually need to accomplish to get to their end goal, and you find them kind of stammering when it comes to, "Well, I don't really know "how you as Inderpal Bhandari can help me, "but here's what I've got to do." And it's a crisis usually. "I've got to get this done, "and I've got to make these numbers by this date. "How can you help me do that?" And that's when the chief data officer kicks into gear and is very creative and actually brings a whole new mindset to the person to understand their business and really dive in and understand, "Okay, this is how "we're going to help you meet that sales number," or, "This is how we're going to help you "get the new revenue growth." >> In certain respects, there's a business strategy, and then, you have to resource the business strategy. And the data strategy then is how are we going to use data as a resource to achieve our business strategy? >> Cortnie: Yes. >> So, let me test something. The way that we at SiliconANGLE, Wikibon have defined digital business is that a business, a digital business uses data as an asset to differentially create and keep customers. >> Caitlin: Right. >> Does that work for you guys? >> Cortnie: Yeah, sure. >> It's focused on, and therefore, you can look at a business and say is it more or less digital based on how, whether it's more or less focused on data as an asset and as a resource that's going to differentiate how it's business behaves and what it does for customers. >> Cortnie: And it goes from the front office all the way to the back. >> Yes, because it's not just, but that's what, create and keep, I'm borrowing from Peter Drucker, right. Peter Drucker said the goal of business is to create and keep customers. >> Yeah, that's right. Absolutely, at the end of the day-- >> He included front end and back end. >> You got to make money and you got to have customers. >> Exactly. >> You got to have customers to make the money. >> So data becomes a de-differentiating asset in the digital business, and increasingly, digital is becoming the differentiating approach in all business. >> I would argue it's not the data, because everybody's drowning in data, it's how you use the data and how creative you can be to come up with the methods that you're going to employ. And I'll give you an example. Here's just an example that I've been using with retailers lately. I can look at all kinds of digital exhaust, that's what we call it these days. Let's say you have a personal digital shopping experience that you're creating for these new millenials, we'll go with that example, because shoppers, 'cause retailers really do need to get more millenials in the door. They're used to their Amazon.coms and their online shopping, so they're trying to get more of them in the door. When you start to combine all of that data that's underlying all of these cool things that you're doing, so personal shopping, thumbs up, thumb down, you like this dress, you like that cut, you like these heels? Yeah, yes, yes or no, yes or no. I'm getting all this rich data that I'm building with my app, 'cause you got to be opted in, no violating privacy here, but you're opting in all the way along, and we're building and building, and so, we even have, for us, we have this Metro Pulse retail asset that we use that actually has hyperlocal information. So, you could, knowing that millenials like, for example, food trucks, we all like food trucks, let's just face it, but millenials really love food trucks. You could even, if you are a retailer, you could even provide a fashion truck directly to their location outside their office equipped with things that you know they like because you've mined that digital exhaust that's coming off the personal digital shopping experience, and you've understood how they like to pair up what they've got, so you're doing a next best action type of thing where you're cross-selling, up-selling. And now, you bring it into the actual real world for them, and you take it straight to them. That's a new experience, that's a new millennial experience for retail. But it's how creative you are with all that data, 'cause you could have just sat there before and done nothing about that. You could have just looked at it and said, "Well, let's run some reports, "let's look at a dashboard." But unless you actually have someone creative enough, and usually it's a pairing of data scientist, chief data officers, digital officers all working together who come up with these great ideas, and it's all based, if you go back to what my example was, that example is how do I create a new experience that will get millenials through my doors, or at least get them buying from me in a different way. If you think about that was the goal, but how I combined it was data, a digital process, and then, I put it together in a brand new way to take action on it. That's how you get somewhere. >> Let me see if I can summarize very quickly. And again, just as an also test, 'cause this is the way we're looking at it as well, that there's human beings operate and businesses operate in an analog world, so the first test is to take analog data and turn it into digital data. IOT does that. >> Cortnie: Otherwise, there's not digital exhaust. >> Otherwise, there's no digital anything. >> Cortnie: That's right. >> And we call it IOT and P, Internet of Things and People, because of the people element is so crucial in this process. Then we have analytics, big data, that's taking those data streams and turning them into models that have suggestions and predictions about what might be the right way to go about doing things, and then there's these systems of action, or what we've been calling systems of enactment, but we're going to lose that battle, it's probably going to be called systems of action that then take and transduce the output of the model back into the real world, and that's going to be a combination of digital and physical. >> And robotic process automation. We won't even introduce that yet. >> Which is all great. >> But that's fun. >> That's going to be in October. >> But I really like the example that you gave of the fashion truck because people don't look at a truck and say, "Oh, that's digital business." >> Cortnie: Right, but it manifested in that. >> But it absolutely is digital business because the data allows you to bring a more personal experience >> Understand it, that's right. >> right there at that moment, and it's virtually impossible to even conceive of how you can make money doing that unless you're able to intercept that person with that ensemble in a way that makes both parties happy. >> And wouldn't that be cheaper than having big, huge retail stores? Someone's going to take me up on that. Retailers are going to take me up on this, I'm telling you. >> But I think the other part is-- >> Right next to the taco truck. >> There could be other trucks in that, a much cleaner truck, and this and that. But one thing, Cortnie, you talk about and you got to still have a hypothesis, I think of the early false promises of big data and Hadoop, just that you throw all this stuff in, and the answer just comes out. That just isn't the way. You've got to be creative, and you have to have a hypothesis to test, and I'm just curious from your experience, how ready are people to take in the external data sources and the unstructured data sources and start to incorporate that in with the proprietary data, 'cause that's a really important piece of the puzzle? It's very different now. >> I think they're ready to do it, it depends on who in the business you are working with. Digital offices, marketing offices, merchandising offices, medical offices, they're very interested in how can we do this, but they don't know what they need. They need guidance from a data officer or a data science head, or something like this, because it's all about the creativity of what can I bring together to actually reach that patient diagnostic, that whatever the case may be, the right fashion truck mix, or whatever. Taco Tuesday. >> So, does somebody from the chief data office, if you will, you know, get assigned to, you're assigned to marketing and you're assigned to finance, and you're assigned to sales. >> I have somebody assigned to us. >> To put this in-- >> Caitlin: Exactly, exactly. >> To put this in kind of a common or more modern parlance, there's a design element. You have to have use case design, and what are we going, how are we going to get better at designing use cases so we can go off and explore the role that data is going to play, how we're going to combine it with other things, and to your point, and it's a great point, how that turns into a new business activity. >> And if I can connect two points there, the single biggest question I get from clients is how do you prioritize your use cases. >> Oh, gosh, yeah. >> How can you help me select where I'm going to have the biggest impact? And it goes, I think my thing's falling again. (laughing) >> Jeff: It's nice and quiet in here. >> Okay, good. It goes back to what you were saying about data strategy. We say what's your data strategy? What's your overarching mission of the organization? For us, it's becoming cognitive business, so for us, it's selecting projects where we can infuse cognition the quickest way, so Client 360, for example. We'll often say what's your strategy, and that guides your prioritization. That's the question we get the most, what use case do I select? Where am I going to have the most impact for the business, and that's where you have to work with close partnership with the business. >> But is it the most impact, which just sounds scary, and you could get in analysis paralysis, or where can I show some impact the easiest or the fastest? >> You're going to delineate both, right? >> Exactly. >> Inderpal's got his shortlist, and he's got his long list. Here's the long term that we need to be focused on to make sure that we are becoming holistically a cognitive company so that we can be flexible and agile in this marketplace and respond to all kinds of different situations, whether they're HR and we need more skills and talent, 'cause let's face it, we're a technology company who's rapidly evolving to fit with the marketplace, or whether it's just good old-fashioned we need more consultants. Whatever the case may be. >> Always, always. >> Yes! >> I worked my business in. >> More consultants! >> Alright, we could go, we could go and go and go, but we're running out of time, we had a full slate. >> Caitlin: We just started. >> I know. >> I agree, we're just starting this convers, I started a whole other conversation to him. We haven't even hit the robotics yet. >> We need to keep going, guys. >> Get control. >> Cortnie: Less coffee for us. >> What do people think about when they think about this series? What should they look forward to, what's the next one for the people that didn't make it here today, where should they go on the calendar and book in their calendars? >> So, I'll speak to the summits first. It's great, we do Spring in San Francisco. We'll come back, reconvene in Boston in fall, so that'll be September, October frame. I'm seeing two other trends, which I'm quite excited about, we're also looking at more industry-specific CDO summits. So, for those of our friends that are in government sectors, we'll be in June 6th and 7th at a government CDO summit in D.C., so we're starting to see more of the industry-specific, as well as global, so we just ran our first in Rio, Brazil for that area. We're working on a South Africa summit. >> Cortnie: I know, right. >> We actually have a CDO here with us that traveled from South Africa from a bank to see our summit here and hoping to take some of that back. >> We have several from Peru and Mexico and Chile, so yeah. >> We'll continue to do our two flagship North America-based summits, but I'm seeing a lot of growth out in our geographies, which is fantastic. >> And it was interesting, too, in your keynote talking about people's request for more networking time. You know, it is really a sharing of best practices amongst peers, and that cannot be overstated. >> Well, it's community. A community is building. >> It really is. >> It's a family, it really is. >> We joke, this is a reunion. >> We all come in and hug, I don't know if you noticed, but we're all hugging each other. >> Everybody likes to hug their own team. It's a CUBE thing, too. >> It's like therapy.
