Isabel geese is the CMO of calm vault and john Gallagher he leads global enterprise infrastructure at sing Creon. And folks welcome to the cube. Thanks for coming on. >>Thank you. >>Thank you. >>So john we heard you this morning. You know, great job you guys are in the industrial logistics business. So supply chains at all a hot topic today. It's got to be challenging. Maybe you could talk about what you're seeing there, but specifically how are you thinking about data management in the context of your overall IT strategy. >>Okay, thank you. So in terms of data management, Synchrotron has 100 sites globally. So if we were to rewind by say 10 years we had data residing a lot out of those remote sites. Uh so over the last few years were basically consolidated a lot of that data and also centralist. So we've brought that into our data centers that we now have, which is a very, very centralist model. So that, that makes it a lot easier to understand where all of that data resides. >>So in the decision pie, as it relates to data, it sounds like cost efficiency is pretty, pretty ranks pretty highly. How does that impact your data management strategy and approach? I mean, is is that like the number one consideration? Is that one of many factors. How should we think about that? >>I would say cost is one of many factors. So obviously cost is key, but you don't want to introduce unnecessary risks. So you've got to keep costs at the forefront. But that's just one of the factors. Obviously data protection is one of the factors ensuring that data is protected and safe. And also understanding, is that exactly where that data resides, making sure that data is encrypted. So I would say that cost is just one of the factors. >>So Isabel good to see you again. I wonder if you could talk about how you're seeing your customers and what they're thinking about, how they're thinking differently about data management today, Are they changing the way they manage data giving given the escalation of ransomware that comprise the called the forced march to digital over the last 18, 19 months, but you've got new threats, new business dynamics, how is that affecting organizations? >>It does, it does affect them a lot. It's um we see a lot more. Actually, I asked a lot of virtual coffee talks with our customers so they can share best practices and a lot of C IOS network ending end with sizzles and they have a readiness plan because they know the question is not if they're going to have an attack, but when and how to recover from it is critical. So all the security team is really looking at the prevention but they know that if they can't stop it all, then they have a plan of end of to the data team for recovery. I see a lot more thoughtfulness because not all data is created equal. So which one is in the cloud and you can recover which one you need fast for minimum business was sorry, minimum business disruption and you keep on prime and which one you cannot lose and you have a go. So we see a lot more planning, a lot more collaboration across all verticals. We have also new services that help customers before the attacks to design and plan and also helping them post attack to recover so very much and to end and as we've seen the king out right now it's all about the people enabling them to do the business while you're risking the business too. So >>All right, thank you for that. So Reza and the fact that your Ceo is C I O. Uh so you must have some interesting conversations there but and you can be a sort of tap Sanjay's brain, how did you handle this kind of thing? And and uh that's a nice collaboration I bet. But what advice can you give to other, see IOS or grappling with cyber threats, data volumes and just the ongoing pressure to do more with less that never changes does it? >>It doesn't. And you're absolutely right. And I obviously as part of my job attracted benchmarks about budgets and everything else that before the pandemic used to track about like 3% growth year over year which is a hard to kind of do a whole lot with them. Um What what I can tell you is not for C I O not two areas the areas of investments are not created equal and from my perspective the biggest areas of investment for somebody like me in my position should be data and protecting the data. So that means that you have to find ways of on the budget side, find ways of shifting money whether you reallocate resources, whether you reform or a really organized differently, automate simplified etcetera. My background is operation so when you talk about people process technology outside of things, I leave the technology to the people that are really good at it and I focus on people and process side and for me that's about again efficiencies and finding ways that you can reorganize, you probably have the people that do the work that you want them to do and you just have to think about reorganizing them differently. And the last thing I said is prioritize prioritize initiatives across the board and it is like partner in crime in these things and we don't always say yes to her and what she wants because we need to be transparent so where we put our money >>so rest, I want to stay with you for me, I want to talk about data sprawl was interesting john during your session this morning I was sort of laying down some of my thoughts because I I feel like data sprawl, it's like social change. You can't fight it. You can maybe, you know for a period of time control it. But data is is out of control. So how do you address data sprawl in an organization? Both from a management perspective there's obviously risk. Somebody said this morning we used to keep, I think it was the C. I. A. In New Jersey. We used to keep everything forever. But that's risky. So how do you deal with that result from an organizational and management perspective? >>Yeah. You again, I'm gonna have to agree with you. As as I said in in a morning session, I like it's a natural phenomenon for a company to go through it. I've seen it in companies that are 150% people and I've seen it in companies that have tens of thousands of people. It's like a foundation onto what what entropy is in thermodynamics. It's the natural order of events. If you don't apply structure, organization data is going to go haywire and everything else. The only way. The best way that I know when the pendulum is here and everybody is doing the wrong thing is to push the pedal on the other side at least for a while to centralize, pick a few of your brightest people that know the data in and out, put them in a team and say you're responsible for making sense out of these things. Identify sources of truth for us and architect them differently. But but start with executive level metrics and board level metrics and push them down. >>So I see. I I agree with that with that. I think the people who have the data context are in the best position to add value as to whether it's data quality and how to get the most out of that data. But the problem is uh john I'd love to pick your brain on this. Especially your urine mia. You got all these different regulations and data silos, which I believe are a byproduct of how we organize. Uh, but but anyway, you have a lot of the considerations to deal with whether it's G. D. P. R. Or or or or data sovereignty etcetera. How do you approach that? >>So one of the first approaches we took when we moved over to con vault with our data protection was to reduce the number of products we used for the data protection. So we had six products through various acquisitions that we, we've done over the last 10-15 years. We've now reduced that six products down to one single product. So it means that all of your data is managed through a sort of single pane, which definitely gives you a much better insight. And also just going back to the costs that you mentioned in the previous question. Obviously going down from six products to one product, we managed to strip around $500,000 out of our costs over three years. We also moved data like I said into the center and allowed us to also concentrate the teams. So also the teams became more efficient because less people were dealing with that data as well. But yes you are right around GDP are there is definitely compliance to be considered and you just have to make sure you're up to date on all of those compliance regulations. >>So it's interesting resident here you talk about you know Isabelle, she's got needs but I would say Isabel that you probably know in your team, you know the marketing data better than anybody but there's got to be Federated governance, you've got to enforce policy in this data sprawl world. So anyway this is sort of a side but Sanjay Isabelle talk today about as a service growing like crazy and given your background I wonder if you can share any insights about how and why you think customers are going to be looking towards SAs I mean the whole world is becoming SAs ified you had some data on that this morning from, from Gardner. What are your thoughts? >>Yeah, no, absolutely, you're right experience this percent coming from cell phones and yes angie mentioned in the keynote by I think 2025 85% of business will be delivered through SAAS apps and that's very simple look at the world today the market dynamics of business changes. You mentioned the supply chain is you were talking you know all the line of business people of the business executives have to change fast. And the fastest way to do that is SAS because it has speed agility and you get the value faster problem being then it becomes very complex or I. T. Because you have workloads in multiple clouds on premise multiple apps and and what convo stands for and what everybody should look at is being able to enable all this innovation but at the same time removing the complexity for I. T. To protect this data to recover it and that's really where you know we're focusing our attention that is unavoidable. It's all about business and gT but it doesn't mean that you should compromise on data management. Yeah. >>Yeah I think you know we gotta we have to wrap here but I think the model, you know again it's about you coming from salesforce, we've contextualized our operational systems. You know, whether it's you know the sales cloud, the logistics, cloud, it's the lines of business actually have a good handle on this. And where I see the role of calm vault is that that notion of Federated governance, you've got to have centralized policy but you've got to programmatically and automate that out to the lines of business and I think that is kind of where the where the future is headed. Uh And I think that's really kind of controlled strategy. I'm hearing a lot on automation cloud like services and pushing that out. Um And so I see a new era in data coming and you guys talked a lot about this but but Isabelle will give you the last word. Put a put a bumper sticker on the on the panel for us. >>Well absolutely. I mean you said it's not left for no workload, sorry, it should be left behind and that's why you know you need a single architecture. I think businesses is changing fast and it's exciting. Uh And as long as you know you got a great I. T. Team with a great plan to have your back as a business leader. Every company should really embrace um all the change and innovation. Green Lake announcements, my name is Dave balanta, you're watching the cube die on Hinchcliffe is here along with Holger muller, these are the constellation kids, extraordinary analysts guys. Great to see you again. I mean it super experienced. You guys, you deal with practitioners, you deal your technologist, you've been following this business for a long time. Diane, We spoke to Holger earlier, I want to start with you uh when you look at this whole trend to as a service, you see a lot of traditional enterprise companies, hard traditionally hardware companies making that move for for a lot of obvious reasons are they sort of replicating in your view, a market that you know well and sas what's your take on how they're doing generally that trend and how HP is >>operating well. Hp has had a unique heritage. They're coming at the whole cloud story and you know the Hyper Scaler story from a different angle than a lot of their competitors and that's mostly a good thing because most of the world is not yet on the cloud, They actually came from H. P. S original world, their line of servers and networks and so on. Um and and so they bring a lot of credibility saying we really understand the world you live in now but we want to take you to that that as a service future. Uh and and you know, since we understand you so well and we also understand where this is going and we can adapt that to that world. Have a very compelling story and I think that with green like you know, was first started about four years ago, it was off to the side uh you know, with all the other offerings now it's it's really grown up, it's matured a lot and I think you know, as we talked about the announcements, we'll see that a lot of key pieces have fallen into place to make it a very compelling hybrid cloud option for the enterprise. >>Let's talk about the announcement. Was there anything in particular that stood out the move to data management? I think it's pretty interesting is a tam expansion strategy. What's your take on the >>announcement? Well, the you know, the unified analytics uh story I think is really important now. That's the technology piece where they say, they say we can give you a data fabric, you can access your data outside of its silos. It doesn't address a lot of the process and cultural issues around data ownership inside the enterprise, but it's you know, having in the actual platform and as you articulating it as a platform, that's one of the things that was also evident, they were getting better and better at saying this is a hybrid cloud platform and it has all the pieces that you would expect, especially the things like being able to bring your data from wherever it is to wherever people needed to be. Uh you know, that's the Holy Grail, so really glad to see that component in particular. I also like the cloud adoption framework saying we understand how to take you from this parochial world of servers that you have and do a cloud date of hybrid world and then maybe eventually get you get you to a public cloud. We understand all the steps and all the components uh I think that's uh you know, I have a study that fully in depth but it seems to have all the moving parts >>chime in anything stand out to, you >>know, I think it's great announcements and the most important things H. P. S and transformation and when you and transformation people realize who you've been, the old and they're here. Maybe the mass of the new but an experienced technology but I will not right away saying oh it's gonna happen right. It's going to happen like this is gonna be done, it's ready, it's materials ready to use and so on. So this is going to give more data points, more proof points, more capabilities that HB is moving away from whatever they were before. That's not even say that to a software services as a service as you mentioned provider. It's >>been challenging, you look at the course of history for companies that try to go from being a hardware company to a software company, uh HP itself, you know, sort of gave up on that IBM you could say, you know semi succeeded but they've they've struggled what's different >>That will spend 30 billion, >>30 >>four. Exactly. So and of course Cisco is making that transition. I mean every traditional large companies in that transition. What about today? Well, first of all, what do you think about HP es, prospects of doing so? And are there things today in the business that make that, you know more faster, whether it's containers or the cloud itself or just the scale of the internet? >>I mean it's fascinating topic, right? And I think many of the traditional players in the space failed because they wanted to mimic the cloud players and they simply couldn't muster up the Capex, which you need to build up public cloud. Right? Because if you think of the public cloud players then didn't put it up for the cloud offering, they put it up because they need themselves right, amazon is an online retailer google as a search and advertising giant Microsoft is organic load from from from office, which they had to bring to the cloud. So it was easier for them to do that. So no wonder they failed. The good news is they haven't lost much of their organic load. Hp customers are still HP customer service, celebrity security in their own premises and now they're bringing the qualities of the cloud as a service, the pay as you go capabilities to the on premise stack, which helps night leader to reduce complexity and go to what everybody in the post pandemic world wants to get to, which is I only pay for what I use and that's super crucial because business goes up and down. We're riding all the waves in a much, much faster way than ever before. Right before we had seven year cycles, it was kind of like cozy almost now we're down to seven weeks, sometimes seven days, sometimes seven hour cycles. And I don't want to pay for it infrastructure, which was great for how my business was two years ago. I want to pay for it as I use it now as a pivot now and I'm going to use >>Diane. How much of this? Thank you for that whole girl. How much of this is what customers want and need versus sort of survival tactics on the vendors >>part. So I think that there, if you look at where customers want to go, they know they have to go cloud, they had to go as a service. Um, and that they need to make multiple steps to get there. And for the most part, I see green light is being a, a highly credible market response to say, you know, we understand IT better, we helped build you guys up over the last 30 years. We can take you the rest of the way, here's all the evidence and the proof points, which I think a lot of the announcements provide uh, and they're very good on cloud native, but the area where the story, um, you may not be the fullest strength it needs to be is around things like multi cloud. So when I talked to almost any large organization C I O. They have all the clouds need to know, how do I make all this fit together? How do I reconcile that? So for the most part, I think it's closely aligned with actual customer requirements and customer needs. I think these have additional steps to go >>is that, do you feel like that's a a priority? In other words, they got to kind of take a linear path. They got to solve the problem for their core customer base or is it, do you feel like that's not even necessarily an aspiration? And it seems like customers, I want them to go. There is what I'm >>inferring that you're, so I do. Well let's go back to the announcement specifically. So there's there are two great operational announcements, one around the cloud physics and the other one around info site. It gives a wealth of data, you know, full stack about how things are operating, where the needs are, how you might be able to get more efficiencies, how you can shut down silicon, you're not using a lot of really great information, but all that has to live with a whole bunch of other consoles and everybody is really craving the single piece of glass. That's what they want is they want to reduce complexity as holder was saying and say, I want to be able to get my arms around my data center and all of my cloud assets. But I don't want to have to check each cloud. I want it in one place. So uh, but it's great to see those announcements position them for that next step. They have these essential components that are that look, you know, uh, they look best to breed in terms of their capabilities are certainly very modern now. They have to get the rest of that story. >>Hope you were mentioning Capex. I added it up I think last year the big four include Alibaba, spent 100 billion on the Capex and generally the traditional on prem players have been defensive around cloud. Not everything is moving to the cloud, we all know that. But I, I see that as a gift in a way that the companies like HP can build on top of into Diane's point that, you know, extend cross clouds out to the edge, which is, you know, a trillion dollar opportunity, which is just just massive. What are your thoughts on HBs opportunities there and chances of maybe breaking away from the pack >>I think definitely well there's no matter pack left, like there's only 23, it's a triumvirate of maybe it's a good thing from a marketing standpoint. There's not a long list of people who give me hardware in my data center. But I think it increases their chances, right? Like I said, it's a transformation, there's more credibility, there's more data point, there's more usage. I can put more workloads on this. And I see, I also will pay attention to that and look at that for the transformation. No question. >>Yeah. And speaking of C. I. O. S. What are you hearing these days? What's their reaction to this whole trend toward as a service? Do they, do they welcome it? Do they feel like okay it's a wait and see. Uh I need more proof points. What's the sentiment? >>Well, you have to divide the Ceo market basically two large groups. One is the the ones that are highly mature. They tend to be in larger organizations are very sophisticated consumers of everything. They see the writing on the wall and that for most things certainly not everything as a service makes the most sense for all the reasons we know, agility and and and speed, you know, time to value scalability, elasticity, all those great things. Uh And then you have the the other side of the market which they really crave control. They have highly parochial worlds that they've built up um that are hard to move to the cloud because they're so complex and intertwined because they haven't had that high maturity. They have a lot of spaghetti architecture. They're not really ready to move the cloud very quickly. So the the second audience though is the largest one and it's uh you know, the hyper scales are probably getting a lot of the first ones. Um, but the bigger markets, really the second one where the folks that need a lot of help and they have a lot of legacy hardware and software that they need to move and that H P. E understands very well. And so I think from that standpoint they're well positioned to take advantage of an untapped market are relatively untapped market in comparison. Hey, >>in our business we all get pulled in different directions because it would get to eat. But what are some of the cool things you guys are working on in your research that you might want people to know about? >>Uh, I just did a market overview for enterprise application platforms. I'm a strong believer that you should not build all your enterprise software yourself, but you can't use everything that you get from your typical SAs provider. So it's focusing on the extent integration and build capabilities. Bill is very, very important to create the differentiation in the marketplace and all the known sauce players basically for their past. Right? My final example is always to speak in cartoons, right? The peanuts, right? There's Linus of this comfort blanket. Right? The past capability of the SARS player is the comfort blanket, right? You don't fit 100% there or you want to build something strategic or we'll never get to that micro vertical. We have a great enterprise application, interesting topic. >>Especially when you see what's happening with Salesforce and Service now trying to be the platform platforms. I have to check that out. How about >>Diane? Well and last year I had a survey conducted a survey with the top 100 C IOS and at least in my view about what they're gonna do to get through this year. And so I'm redoing that again to say, you know, what are they gonna do in 2022? Because there's so many changes in the world and so, you know, last year digital transformation, automation cybersecurity, we're at the top of the list and it'll be very interesting. Cloud was there too in the top five. So we're gonna see what, how it's all going to change because next year is the year of hybrid work where we're all we have to figure out how half of our businesses are in the office and half are at home and how we're gonna connect those together and what tools we're gonna make, that everybody's trying to figure >>out how to get hybrid. Jt Welcome to the cube conversation. >>Hey, that sound, thanks for having me. It sounds like we know each other, we used to run into each other at meat out. So yeah, >>it's fun to talk to you because I know you're, you know, scratching the devops it from the beginning before devops was devops before infrastructure of code was infrastructure as code. All that's played out. So it's really a great ride. I know you had a good time doing it a lot of action though. If you look at devops it's kind of like this new, I won't say devops two point because it kind of cliche but you're starting to see the mature ization of companies besides the early adopters and the people who are hardcore adopting and they realize this is amazing and then they? Re platform in the cloud and they go great, let's do more and next thing, you know, they have an operations issue and they got a really kind of stabilize and then also not break anything. So this is kind of the wheelhouse of what you guys are doing in ops reminds me of no ops, no operations, you know, we don't want to have a lot of extra stuff. This is a big thing. Take a but take them in to explain the company, you're what you guys stand for and what you're all about. >>Yeah, so you know, our main focus is more on the operation side, so, you know the reason why you move to cloud or the reason why you have devops practices, you want to go fast. Um but you know when you're building cloud infrastructure, you have to make trade offs right? You have to maybe some environment, maybe you have to optimize for S L A. And maybe another workload, you have to optimize for um you know, maybe costs, right? So what we're on a mission to do is to make sure that companies are able to make the right trade offs, right? We help companies to make sure all their workload, every single resource in the cloud is aligned with the business needs, you know, so we do a lot of cool things by like, you know, bringing accountability mapping and we're close to different genes. But yeah, the end goal is, can we make sure that every single resource on data Bs is aligned with the business needs >>and they're also adding stuff. Every reinvent zillion more services get announced. So a lot, a lot of stuff going on, I gotta ask you while I got you here, what is the definition of cloud apps these days, from your standpoint and why is it important? A lot of folks are looking at this and they want to have stable operations. They love the cloud really can't deny the cloud value at all. But cloud ops has become a big topic. What is cloud apps and why is it important. >>Right? I mean, first of all, Like you just mentioned, right? Like Amazon keeps on launching more services. It's over 200. So the environment is very complex, Right? And then mm complexity within the services is uh pretty uh you really need to be the main expert for example, know everything about do So, you know, our question to us is, let's say if you find a critical issue, uh let's say you want to uh you know, enable multi AZ on your RDS for example. Uh and it's critical because you know, you're running a uh high availability workloads on AWS. How do you follow up on that right to us. Operation is how do you build a cloud backlog? How do you prioritize, how do you come together as a team to actually remediate those issues? No one is tackling that job, everyone's surfaces like, hey, here's 1000 things that are wrong with your environment. No one is focused on like how do you go from these issues to prioritization to backlog to actually coming together as a team. You know, I've been fixing some of those issues. That's that's what operation means is >>I know it's totally hard because sometimes I don't even know what's going on. I gotta ask you why, why is it harder now? Why are people, I mean I get the impression that people like looking the other way? I hope it goes the problem kind of goes away. What are the challenges? What's the big blocker from getting at the root cause or trying to solve these problems? What's the big thing that's holding people back? >>Yeah, I mean, when I first got into, you know, I t you know, I was working in data center and every time we needed a server, you know, we have to ask for approvals, right? And you finally got a server, but nowadays anyone could provision resources. And normally you have different people within the team's provisioning resources and you can have hundreds of different teams who are provisioning resources. So the complexity uh and the speed that we are, you know, provisioning resources across multiple people, it just continues to go higher and higher. So that's why uh you know, on the surface it might look that hey, this, you know, maybe the biggest instance uh is, you know, aligned with the business needs, you know, looking at the changes, it's hard to know, are those aligned with the business? They're not? So that's that's that's where the complexity and player. >>So the question I get a lot from people we talk about devops and cloud, cloud apps or cloud management or whatever kind of buzz words out there, it kind of comes down to cloud apps and cloud management seems to be the category, people focus on. How is cloud ops different then? Say the traditional cloud management and what impact does it have for customers and why should they care and what do they need an option. >>Right. So one of the things we do uh and and we do think that cloud operation is sort of an evolution from cloud management. We make sure that Every single resource 1st, first of all blondes and workload. So and you know, workload could be a group of microservices uh and then uh you know every single workload has owners like define owners who are responsible for making sure they managed budget that they're responsible for security that normally doesn't exist. Right? Cloud is this black box, you know where multiple people are provisioning resources, you know, everyone tries to sort of build sort of a structure to kind of see like what are these resources for? What are these resources for as part of onboarding to end up? So what we do, we actually, you know, analyze all your metadata. We create like 56 workloads and then we say here is a bucket where there's there, this is totally unassigned, right? And then we actually walked them through assigning different roles and also we walk them through to kinda looking under this unallocated resources and assign resources for those as well. So once you're done, every single resource has clear definition, right? Is this a compliant? Uh you know hip hop workload, what are the run books, what is this for? John I don't know if he heard that before. Sometimes there are workloads running and how people don't know, I don't even know who is the owner, right? So after you're done with an office and after you're managing and uh, you know, uh, managing your workload on and off, you have full visibility and clear understanding of what are the. It's funny, it's >>funny you mentioned the workloads being kind of either not knowing the owners, but also we see people um, with the workloads sometimes it's like throwing a switch and leaving the hose on the water on. And next thing you know, they get the bill. They're like, oh my God, what happened? Why did I leave? What, what is this? So there's a lot of things that you could miss. This brings up the point you just said and what you said earlier aligning resources across the cloud uh and and having accountability. And then you, you mentioned at the top of this interview that aligning with the business needs. I find that fastest. I would like to take him in to explain because it sounds really hard. I get how you can align the resources and do some things, identify what's going on, accountability kind of map that that's, that's good tech. How does that, how do you get that to the alignment on the business side. >>Yeah. I mean we start by, first of all, like I said, you know, we use machine learning to play these workloads? And then we asked basic questions about the workload. You know, what is this workload for? Uh Do you need to meet with any kind of compliance is for this workload? Uh What is your S. O. A. For this workload? You know, depending on that. We we make recommendations. Uh So we kind of ask those questions and we also walk them through where they create roles. Like we asked who was responsible for creating budgets or managing security for this workload and guess what also the you know the bucket where resources are allocated for. We ask for you know, owners for that as well like in this bucket who's the owner for who's going to monitor the budget and things like that. So you know we asked, you know, we start by just asking the question, having teams complete that sort of information and also you know, why do you a little bit more information on how this aligns with the business needs? You know, >>talk about the complexity side of it. I love that conversation around the number of services. You said 200 services depending how you count what you call services in the thousands of so many different things uh knobs to turn on amazon uh web services. So why are people um focused on the complexity and the partnering side? Because you know, it's the clouds at E. P. I. Based system. So you're dealing with a lot of different diverse resources. So you have complexity and diversity. Can you talk me through how that works? Because that's that seems to be a tough beast to tame the difference between the complexity of services and also working with other people. >>Yeah for sure like this this normal to have um you know maybe thousands of lambda functions in their application. We're working with a customer where within last month there were nine million containers that launched and got terminated right there, pretty much leveraging, auto scaling and things like that. So these environments are like very complex. You know, there's a lot of moving pieces even, you know, depending on the type of services they're using. So again what we do, you know we when we look at tags and we look at other variables like environments and we look at who's provisioning resources, those resources and we try to group them together and that way there's accountability uh you know if the cost goes up for one workload were able to show that team like your cost is going up uh And also we can show uh unallocated bucket that hey within last week Your cost is you know, $4,000 higher in the unallocated bucket. Where would you like to move this these resources to just like an ongoing game. You >>know, you know jt I was talking with my friend jerry Chen is that Greylock partners is a V. C. Has been on the cube many times a couple of years ago. We're talking about how you can build a business within the cloud, in the shadows of the clouds, what he called it, but I called it more the enabling side and and that's happened now, you're seeing the massive growth. I'm also talking to some C X O C IOS or CSOs and they're like trying to figure out which companies that are evolving and growing to be to buy from, get to get the technology. Uh and they always say to me john I'm looking for game changing kind of impact. I'm looking for the efficiency and you know, enablement, the classic kind of criteria. So how would you guys position yourself to those buyers out there that might want to look at you guys as a solution and ups what game changing aspect of what you do is out there, how would you talk to that that C I O or C. So or buyer um out in the end the enterprise and the thieves ran his piece. What would you say to them? >>Yeah, I think the biggest uh advantage and I think right now it's a necessity, you hear these stories where, you know, people provision resources, they don't even know which project is it for. It's just very hard to govern the cloud environment, but I believe we're the only tool. Mhm where you want to compromise on the speed, right? The whole reason um cloud but they want to innovate faster. No one wants to follow that. Right? But I think what's important. We need to make sure everything is aligned with the business value. Uh, we allow people to do that. You know, we, we, we can both fast at the same time. You can have some sort of guard rails. So there are proper ownership. There's accountability. People are collaborating and people are also rightsizing terminating resources, they're not using. It's like, you know, I think if companies are looking for a tool that's gonna drive better accountability on how people build and collaborate on cloud, I think reply the best solution. >>So people are evolving with the cloud and you mentioned terminating services. That's a huge deal in cloud. Native things are being spun up and turned off all the time. So you need to have good law, You have a good visibility, observe ability is one of the hottest buzzwords out there. We see a zillion companies saying, hey, we're observe ability, which is to me is just monitoring stuff. They can sure you're tracking everything. So when you have all this and you start to operationalize this next gen, next level cloud scale, cost optimization and visibility is huge. Um, what is the, what is the secret sauce uh, for that you guys offer? Because the change management is a big 12 teams are changing too cost team accountability. All this is kind of, it's not just speeds and feeds, there's, it's kind of intersection of both. What's your take on that reaction to that? >>Yeah, I think it's the Delta. Right? So change management, What you're really looking for is not a, like a fire hose, you're looking for. What changed what the root cause who did it, what happened? Right. Because it's totally normal for someone to provision maybe thousands or even millions containers. But how many of those got shut down? What is the delta and uh, you know, if there is a, there is an anomaly, what is the root cause? Right? Uh, how we fix it. So you know the way we've changed managers, change management is a lot different. We really get to the root cause analysis and we really help companies to make, really show what changed and how they can take action to a media. But if there were issues, >>I want to put a little plug in for you guys. I noticed you guys have a really strong net promoter score. You have happy customers also get partners. A lot of enablement there. You kind of got a lot of things going on. Um, explain what you guys are all about. How did you get here? What's the day in the life of a customer that you're serving? Why then why are the scores so high? Um, take us through a use case of someone getting that value. >>Yeah. So I, I come from like a consulting background, john so you know, I was migrating companies to read the Bs when the institute was in beta and then I, you know, founded a consulting company over 100 employees. Really successful interview. S premier partner called in clouds. And so Enos was born there because because you know it was, it was born out a consulting company, there are a lot of other partners who are leveraging the tools to help their customers and it goes back to our point earlier, john like amazon has to wonder services, right? We are noticing customers are open to work with partners and uh you know with different partners that really helped them to make sure they're making the right decisions when they are building on cloud. So a lot of the partners, a lot of the consulting companies are leveraging uh and hopes to deliver value to their customers as far as uh you know how we actually operate. You know, we pay attention to uh you know what, what customers are looking for, what, where are the next sort of challenges uh you know, customers are facing in a cloud environment world like super obsessed, you know, like we're trying to figure out how do we make sure every single resource is aligned with the business value without slowing companies down so that really drives us, we're constantly welcome customers to stay true to the admission >>and that's the ethos of devops moving fast. The old quote Mark Zuckerberg used to have move fast, break stuff and then he revised it to move move fast and make it stable, which is essentially operational thing. Right, so you're starting to see that maturity, I noticed that you guys also have a really cool pricing model, very easy to get in and you have a high end too. So talk us through about how to engage with you guys, how do people get involved? Just click and just jump in there, buying software buying services, take a minute to explain how people can, can work with you. >>Yeah, it's just, it's just signing up on our site, you know, our pricing is tier model, uh you know, once you sign up, if you do need help with, you know, remediating high risk issues we can bring in partners, we have a strong partner ecosystem. Uh we could definitely help you do interviews to the right partners but it's as simple as just signing up and just taking me out. First thing I guess. >>Jt great chatting with you have been there from early days of devops, born in the field, getting, getting close to the customers and you mentioned ec two and beta, they just celebrate their 15th birthday and I remember one of my starts that didn't actually get off the off the blocks, they didn't even have custom domains at that time was still the long remember the long you are else >>everything was ephemeral like when you restart server, everything will go away a cool >>time. And I just remember saying to myself man, every entrepreneur is going to use this service who would ever go out and buy and host the server. >>mhm Yes. Welcome back to the cubes coverage of red hat summit 2021 virtual john for your host of the cube paul. Comey who's here is the president and Ceo of red hat cube alumni paul always great to have you on the leader of red hat now President and Ceo for a year I think about a year now we're looking at under your belt now part of IBM Great to see you. >>You too nice to see you again john. >>So we've talked many times on the Cuban now. It's kind of playing out in real time. The software world with open source has gone mainstream. The conversation was moved to the cloud. Okay. People move to the cloud. Cloud native emerges devil has been around for a while. But now the conversation is cloud for the enterprise that uh, the enterprises, it's a tough world. You gotta, it's complicated is a lot of legacies, a lot of value and you want the new stuff. This is what the conversation is now. It's shifted to I got cloud, it's hybrid. What's your reaction to that? >>Well, you know, it really is, as you say, it's complicated but it's evolving and really, really fast. I mean, you know, I think you remember we've been here a lot. You first remember first software is eating the world and open source software is eating the world and in every every company is becoming a software company. All true. But that evolution continues today with the proliferation of hybrid cloud environments that it encompasses everything from data centers to public cloud services to And even now we'll talk about two for far flung edge deployments. That's all now part of the cloud. I mean, this is all what makes up hybrid. I like to always say that Hybrid really is the new data centers but now see IOS and I thi leaders, they need to reconsider what their roles, what their role here is and the way we look at it as every C I O now needs to be a cloud operator because because Hybrid is what their environment is now today, that used to be all in their data center. So, so but one of the things that really makes a choice even more important and its leaders, they need to address address specific needs, um not only to the organization, but even as they change and evolve in this because it really is a dynamic environment, I mean think about it and just mentioned edge and how how important that is to see IOS, we weren't even talking about that two years ago, so, so it's not a single answer here, right? Um and and you know, and there as there wasn't a single answer when it was all in one building or in one data center, but now it's even it's even more complex. So, so we need to enable really a new wave of cloud operators here with technologies that can be deployed as cloud services as well as on premises. We'll talk more about this too, but and we'll talk about this at the summit. We talked about the summit. Cloud services become really important, especially managed services, for example, because, um because we're so complex, Hybrid brings so much power, but it is complex. You know, see I need help with this, they need help managing this now. And so that's really where a lot of our focus is today. >>It's interesting you say there's no single answer. I would agree with you because it's now you can actually do a lot more customization with cloud and Hybrid. I think there's a general sentiment and directionally correct answer uh in the industry is that hybrid is operating model right? And I think you guys are have a whole division of SRS google talks about this all the time and their cloud site reliability engineers. And I think you're seeing that in educational institutions which we'll talk about. But I think this idea of cloud scale as the new I. T. And you mentioned hybrids, the new data center. You know, I don't I don't want to offend my I. T. Friends out there but they're kind of all realizing it to that if they don't understand how to operate cloud scale they'll be irrelevant and they're and they understand that their jobs are not just provisioning storage, networking and servers. Those are now involved in a hybrid architecture. And by the way, there is no one recipe, it's dependent. Each enterprise can have its own set of architecture based on their workloads again. So I buy that no single answer, but there is hybrid and I think it's pretty well understood. I mean, do you agree with that? >>I absolutely agree with that. But let's take a look at this, unpack it a little bit and take a look at the building blocks a bit. Right. Um, you know, we talked about open sources, what's driving all of this now and and everything we're talking about here is built in and around Lennox and it was only possible because Lennox was so open, so available and became so powerful, that's now been the platform that all this new innovation is built around. I mean, I oftentimes saying it's true the cloud just wouldn't be here had Lennox not only made its way in the open source development environment, but made its way into the enterprise to enable it to companies like us that make it enterprise ready, secure etcetera. So I think that's really an important thing to understand here. So when you talk about skills that the Ceos need certainly SRE skills, operation skills etcetera, but they also need Lennox skills and even open source skills. So so I think I think that's important, everything that's coming down the road and in in this space in um in his open source based and built in and around Lennox things like ai quantum computing, autonomous vehicles um IOT in and out to the edge all built on a foundation of Lennox and open source. So we see it in the enterprise everywhere now. I mean a survey where you know we did a survey out there and looking at the survey of C I O s out there, open is predominant out there, Lennox is predominant out there in hybrid is predominant and growing in a pretty big clip every year. >>You know, paul, I want to get your reaction to something because this may be kind of a dot connecting moment for me because I want to get your thoughts on this because it's a it's a pattern I'm seeing emerging now multiple times and usually I thought this was kind of a one off, but I'm starting to see it. So I'm going to get your thoughts on this. You guys have been super successful with open source in the enterprise, Super successful over decades, building a community and an ecosystem now with open source with with cloud Native, specifically we're seeing end users participating more in the, in the contribution starts out with the hyper scale ear's but now you're seeing kind of, I would call general purpose mainstream enterprises contributing projects, not necessarily their expertise, but they've been participating in taking the goodness of open source and bringing that into the into the enterprise. And I'll see you relying on you guys as well. But now I'm starting to see the pattern where people are relying on you to bring your community to them and they merge their communities with you guys and being kind of a steward there, is that a pattern? Do you see that evolving? Because we've heard that on multiple interviews on the cube where we've heard end users say we love the red hat ecosystem and and that seems to be more and more about they want to be building their ecosystem. So you did it for yourselves, you did it for the industry. Now, enterprises want this service is this is this is a pattern. And what's your reaction to that? >>It actually is a pattern because it's actually one of the reasons why innovation is moving so quickly right now. As I just said, you know, you know, this whole area here in infrastructure and cloud and development environments, Hybrid included. It's all built in and around, it's all built in and around Lennox. And in the past, what's happening and driven by open source development in the past? What happened? Look at the old fashioned way, right, where a company like us would be in a company, software company, not like us, but any old software company would be, you know, in their stovepipe, talking to their customers, getting their requirements and then bringing those requirements back from the customer base and then trying to work that into their products over time, get that back out to the customer to test it and try it, see it as it works. That's probably a five year, there's probably a five year journey, uh, for big, big requirements for big change requirements you look at now with, with actually end users now participating in upstream development, they're building their requirements into that upstream, which is our development environment. And actually that's what feeds our products. And so we've cut out the middleman, if you will completely in there now when we're building those requirements into our future future, R and D work in the upstream and then we bring that down into a product back into their enterprise for them to use in production. So it cuts out years of time for that innovation to get from concept to building to product, rising to production. And, and I think, you know, john, that's one of the big reasons why that customer base participating is one of the big reason why we're seeing innovation move like we've never seen it before in the enterprise, which in the old days that was a stodgy place where they didn't want to move very quickly. >>Yeah. And the values there, I mean I think it's clear what the pandemic we get to this towards the the last last talking track here. But with the pandemic I think it's pretty clear what the value is and the speed to capture opportunities and growth. I think enterprises are realizing that I think the power of the ecosystem is a modern error kind of phenomenon that is now kind of showing its its value and clearly in the market. And I think people who harness communities and ecosystems not try to fork them but connect them and and intersect them and kind of played well together. So again this is an open source concept kind of re imagined so we'll keep an eye on that. So, um, I want to get to your comment in the kino you mentioned at the top here every C I. O. It has to be a cloud operator. You know, that reminds me of all the start ups and all the positioning statements. Every company needs to be a software company. Every company needs to be a media company. Every company needs to be a cloud operator. So I love that. What does it mean? Because I could say, hey paul, I have a cloud, I'm working on amazon Or is that it? Or wait a minute as yours got, I got 365 over here and I'm using big query over here. I might use oracle over here. I mean all these multi cloud conversations. So it's confusing. >>Yeah. Tell me what, you know, if you look at, if you look at it, we were really one of the first ones to really build around this hybrid, this hybrid concept. And the reason why we were one of the first ones is because what amazon hit the world 12 or 13 years ago or something like that, They were the first major cloud and at the time that the narrative was that, you know, every application was going to move to the cloud tomorrow. Right well, because as I said earlier, everything is built in and in and around open source. And legs were very involved with our customers as they tried to move those first applications to the cloud. So certainly is a lot of value and moving to the cloud. But our customers quickly realized with us helping them, quickly realized that you know what, this is great. But not every application suited for the cloud, um for any cloud, but also I may want to run multiple clouds because another cloud provider over here might have a better service than this particular service over here, vice versa. And so we were in the middle of that. So one of the decisions we made seven or eight years ago, everything we did in that last seven or eight years around the portfolio, whether it was building products, m and A, requiring new companies etcetera, was built around that hybrid portfolio. What that means is a common platform that sits both on premise and bare metal machines. Virtual machines, private clouds on premise multiple clouds across out in the enterprise, that common platform so that developers, operators and the security people have that common platform to build with because just like in Lenox, even though they are all derived from open source upstream, they're all different, they all make different choices and how they're going to configure themselves. So, so that's important. So now we're out there with these multiple clouds. One of our surveys we see our Ceo is telling us now that You're using on the average I think six Clouds today and they expect that to go 8-10 over the next 3-5 years. So how are they going to manage that? How are they going to secure that? How are their operations people going to operate with that? That's all the things that we've been working on over the last number of years. So from that common platform, which is sort of the basis which is open shift to underneath it, which is the Linux operating system, which is well that spans all those footprints that I talked about. And then also you look at one of the latest trends is as well as manage services because what customers are now telling us is okay I got this environment that this hybrid is now my data center. It means I have to worry about these apps all in different footprints. Um I want to the platform to act like a cloud in some cases I don't want to I don't want to even manage it. I want you to manage it for me because for many reasons I want great up time. I might not have the right skill sets in my organization and so I want you to manage it. And so that's where we develop managed services and that's where we have set a large group today large SRE group that's providing those managed services no matter where our platform runs for our customers. Also, what I talked about in my keynote today is that to support that thought process is that we're doing a lot of research in this and so, you know, in a typical computer science research world, you know, of the past, you might really be into the into the real computer science of Research. We with the consortium around mass Open cloud with Boston University, MIT, Harvard Northeastern with this consortium. We're running mass Open cloud on all Red Hat with the collaboration of these universities and we're really focusing on the sorry aspect of it. What do we need to manage it? What do we need around automation to manage it? What do we need around ai to manage it? What do we need for tools to manage it? And and that's really goes down to what I fully briefly said in the beginning, is that every C I O N I T uh executive now has to be their own cloud operator because they are effectively stitching all these disparate clouds together. So that's where a big part of our focus takes us all the way from, You know, upstream development to product to the research we're doing for the next 3-5 plus years. >>You know, I gotta say the hybrid cloud is a new data center which is implying I T in the cloud operators with C X O S and C IOS is interesting because it's validated by Mckinsey's recent report that came out that said there's a trillion dollars of untapped value in one retrofitting existing infrastructure and operations and to net new operate use cases that the cloud enables. So there's clearly not two categories of value proposition that businesses are facing. One is, you know, kind of take care of the existing and then also bring in the new that cloud enables. So, you know, I think that's really key and that will drive the business leaders to foresight, if you will to be agile and adaptive to that. So so totally agree on that. I love this open cloud initiative, you mentioned the mass open cloud which I know is kind of like this beanpot for techies, um people who know what that means, uh it's in the boston area these institutions um this is gonna be a training and an opportunity to train the next generation and if you take it to the next level cybersecurity is also in this kind of net new novelty, interdisciplinary components. So you got engineering which is like devops engineering and then Systems Engineering and Computer Science intersecting together with kind of this data discipline. So it hits cybersecurity which is a board level conversation, it hits the new business model opportunities which is a driver, this is new, this is there's no pre existing curriculum. What how do you explain that to heads of the departments and the deans of these institutions saying, you know, it's an engineering thing. No, it's computer science thing. No, it's a it's a business school thing with data science. What's your what's your conversation with folks in the industry when you say this is a different thing? >>Uh you know, the university, you know, the university is getting, it was actually one of the one of the first things this is you know what you'll see. You know, I talked to uh dr bob Brown from President bu earlier in an interview and and this is what we imagined with them early on and even they brought those disciplines together now in in in what they call a harry institute, where to bring data, computer science engineering as you say. And now even operations, it's almost like, you know, systems engineering on steroids, it's a really big spanning system. And so so the universities are starting understand that's why these universities in the consortium, that's why we're working here. But also, you know, the industry's kind of learning it the hard way because now that they get some of their developers starting to move some of their application developments out into one, maybe two clouds and having the now they have to figure out how they're going to do all those things that we talked about, develop, secure operated. So they're they're learning the hard way that this is the new discipline because that's reality. I also think that, you know, as I said, like anything in tech, we always say this is going to happen tomorrow. I also think, like I said, when when cloud first came came out, everybody saying, I'm moving every app to the cloud tomorrow. We even had customers that bought into that said we're moving going full board but they realized once they get into it it wasn't practical. Don't take me wrong. Cloud brings a ton of value here but from a practical perspective it's going to be some apps and across many clouds and and so now they're having to deal with the I. T. Execs and the C. I. Was having to deal with it. So they're learning really fast because of the reality that they have to deal with. Now having said all that to it also brings up why managed services you're seeing so popular right now because as that's moving so fast they just don't have the skills necessary in many cases to really operate and run in this in this type of environment. It brings so much power but the skills aren't necessarily there in the industry. So that now you see the connection between the industry where we sit and even the university now looking at this whole big problem as as you put said, john, actually a new discipline, >>I think, I think, and I think one final leg of a three legged stool is at the business schools because when you think about systems programming, you mentioned that and you know, I love to go back in history and look at the history of operating systems. And you know, paul, we've talked us in the past and you guys know a lot about operating systems from a technology standpoint, it's not just about a productivity suite for a user or a department with the system, it's a company that needs to be programmed. So when people want to globally operate their business, that software defined this isn't now and this is now happening, right? So this the new leaders in these companies that want to run these global companies that scale operate them, just like operating the business not necessary. Operating a tech or shiny new toy, have to build the operating system for the business. To me, I think that's where I see IBM looking at cloud differently and saying, hey, this is an operating system under the covers for the business. The applications are multi fold from, you know, an application for productivity to an edge device, industrial or consumer user work at home. I mean it's a plethora of applications. What's your reaction to that? And you you see the same thing? >>I mean frankly, I think this is an area that a lot of the infrastructure players missed in the past. And I think I think this is what IBM saw with with bringing us in as well. It's all about the application. You know, I said earlier that, you know, we said every every company was a software company is true. And so that means the companies are running their businesses on these applications. So it's all about the app and I think a lot of infrastructure companies miss that. And and so with Hybrid now you have that ability to run the app wherever makes the most sense for for a whole host of reasons. And so now, but now comes the complexity of all of that. I think, I think IBM with bringing us in saw that that Hybrid was maybe as big, if not a bigger opportunity than cloud itself because of of the complexity it's going to bring, the power is going to bring. But also the complexity is gonna bring. I see that's why, you see Arvind, I sort of doubling down the entire IBM company on on hybrid services that are that are going to be really important here, that they provide these applications on top that are going to be really important, but that have to be architected in such a way that they can run in a hybrid environment. And finally there's all the infrastructure and tools and development pieces that we bring to the table. So, So yeah, I think I think are really, really understood that as they made the decision to bring redheaded, >>I talked to a center all the time and they also have this kind of concept of re factoring and reprogramming your business. Uh, it's not, it's a holistic view. This is kind of what's happening. So my final question for you is as as that becomes software enabled and programmed if you will with applications the business with many different subsystems in there. Um a lot of companies now looking at the light at the end of the tunnel with the pandemic and they're seeing vaccines coming out. Some say vaccines will be pretty much everywhere, everyone over 12 by the fall. So we're back to real life. There's gonna be a pullback of some projects on doubling down on others. As you as you mentioned, what are we doing? We're starting to see hybrid as companies come out of the pandemic, they're all jockeying to make sure that they have either done their work to re factor or reposition, reprogrammed their business and be set up for net new opportunities. >>What >>do you see as a growth model or growth opportunities for companies? You want to come out with a growth strategy out of the gate of the pandemic. What's your thoughts? >>Well, I mean, I think you have to plan for companies have to plan for your workforce to be anywhere, but in order to be anywhere in and to be productive, you need you need services like we're on right now for example, but you need the infrastructure to be able to do that. You need you need a way for your customers if you buy the fact that every company is a software company, you're running a business through their applications either way for your customers to be able to interact with you anywhere from where they are anywhere in a real time way. And so I think that's why from our perspective, things like that we're pushing a lot on the edge. Now, that's why you're seeing the hybrid cloud moved all the way out into the edge and you can see it in every vertical, you know, in the telco space. The edge means you gotta do, you have data and compute that needs to be done on the set on the cell tower in the manufacturing world. You have the state and compute that needs to be done on the factory floor, in the retail vertical. We see the edge really being significant in all these verticals, but but that edge is now extends that hybrid data center that we've been talking so much about. So even though you have all these edge devices way out there on the edge, it's a critical part of the business. So you have to have, your developers need need to be able to develop for it, you need to secure it, you need to and you need to operate it and manage it. So now, you know, in a very short period of time, hybrids taken on another dimension, bringing you out to all these points on the edge which is the same but slightly different in every vertical. Now comes complexity and that's why automation is so important because with that power comes complexity but it's going to take automation to keep it all running, >>paul. Great insight. Thanks for coming on the cube. Open innovation out in the open with with you guys again continue. And the focus of the evolution of software and the cloud with enterprise I. T. Clearly a lot of innovation and your contribution to academia and the mass open cloud and all the open cloud initiatives, phenomenal. The world's going. Open source and continues and continues. Alan Downs is the vice president, global Cloud security and resiliency services at IBM and he's joined by MS Michelle what? Weston who is the director of cloud security and resiliency offerings at IBM folks. Welcome to the cube. Thanks for coming on. >>Thank you. >>Now before we get into it, I said IBM but I want to ask you, alan about an announcement you made last month about Kendrell new spin out from IBM. What can you tell us? >>Very excited about the name? I think there's a lot of meaning in the name centered around new growth and censored around partnership and relationship. So if you look at the name that was announced I think it really does typify what we set out to be as a trusted partner in the industry. All born around new growth centered around strong partnership and relationship. So very pleased and excited and look forward to the opportunity we have going forward. >>Yeah congratulations on that. Had some clarity martin schroder. New ceo Cubillan. Great executive love it. So good luck. Um Alan let me stay with you for a second. I mean operational resilience it means different things to different people and we know from speaking with C. IOS in our community during the pandemic. It doesn't just mean disaster recovery. In fact a lot of C. I. O. Said that their business continuing strategy were too focused on on D. R. Ellen. What does operational resilience mean from your perspective? >>So I'll answer it this way. Operational resiliency risk is defined as the quantifiable steps that any client needs to take in order to respond, recover from an unplanned outage. It sits squarely within operational risk. And if you think about it, operational risk is the kind of non financial element of risk. And defined within that category, operational resiliency risk is trying to identify those steps both pre active and reactive that a client needs to consider that they would have to take in the event of an unplanned disruption or an unplanned outage that would impact their ability to serve their clients or to serve their organization. That's how I define operational resiliency risk. >>Great and I wonder Michelle if you can add to that but I think you know I sometimes say that the pandemic was like a forced march to digital and part of that was business resilience. But You know, where do we go from here? You know, we had 14 months shoved into our face and now we have some time to think about. So how should clients think about evolving their strategies in this regard? >>Yeah, Well, certainly with respect to what was called Newco now, Kendrell, um our approach has been advisory led. Uh we will help clients along this journey. Uh, one thing that I'd like to point out in one of the journeys that we've been taking over the last couple of years is it really is about security and resiliency together. If you think of that planning and how to mitigate your operational risk, the security and resiliency go hand in hand through the same people within the organization that are planning for that and worried about it. And so we had already started about three years ago to pull the two together and to have a unified value proposition for clients around security and resiliency, both being advisory lead, doing everything for a client from project based to the digital consumption world which we know clients live in today to a fully managed service all around security and resiliency together. >>Yeah, so I mean it's really important topic. I mean you heard Chair Powell last month. He was he was on 60 minutes saying well yeah worried about inflation, were way more worried about security. So so alan you know, were let's say you're in the virtual, you know, conference room with the board of directors. What's that conversation like? Uh where does it start? >>I think there is a huge concern right now with regard to security and obviously resiliency as well. But if you just think about what we've all been through and what's transpired in the last 12 months, the what we call the threat landscape has broadened significantly and therefore clients have had to go through a rapid transformation not just by moving employees to home base, but also their clients having a much higher expectation in terms of access to systems, access to transactions which are all digital. So you referred to it earlier. But the transformation, our clients have had to go on driving a higher dependence on those systems that enable them to serve their clients digitally and enable them to allow the employees to work remotely in this period has increased the dependencies that they have across the environment that are running many of the critical business processes. So the discussion in the boardroom is very much are we secure? Are we safe? How do we know how safe and secure and resilient should we be? And based on that fact about how safe and secure should we be? Where are we today as an organization? And I think these are the questions that are at the boardroom is basically from a resiliency security perspective, where should we be that supports our strategy vision and our client expectation? And then the second question is very much where are we today? How do we know that we are secure? How do we know that we can recover from any unplanned or unforeseen disruption to our environments? >>So Michelle, I mean I just mentioned the threat surface is expanding and we're just getting started, everybody's like crazy about five G leaning in the edge Iot and that's just uh this could be orders of magnitude by the end of the decade compared to where it is today. So how do you think about the key steps that organizations should should take to ensure operational resilience, you know, not only today, but also putting in a road map. >>Yeah, yeah. And and one thing that we do know from our clients is those that have actually planned for resiliency and security at the forefront. They tend to do that more effectively and more efficiently. Um It's much better to do that than to try to do that after an outage. You certainly learn a lot. Um but that's not the experience that you want to go through. You want to have that planning and strategy in the forefront. As Alan said in terms of the threat vector, the pandemic brought that on as well. We saw surgeons Of cyberattacks, opportunistic attacks. Um you know, we saw the best of people in the pandemic as well as the worst in people. Some of those attacks were on agencies that we're trying to recover. We're trying to treat the public with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. So none of us can let our guard down here. I think we can anticipate that that's only going to increase. And with the emergence of these new technologies like cloud, we know that there's been such a massive benefit to clients. In fact those that were cloud enabled to sustain their businesses during the pandemic full stop. But with that comes a lot more complexity. Those threat vectors increase five G. I expect to be the same. So again, resilience and security have never been more relevant. More important, we see a lot of our clients putting budget there and those that plan for it with a strategic mindset and understand that whatever they have today may be good enough, but in the future they're going to have to invest and continue to evolve that strategy. Are those that have done the best. >>Yeah, the bolt on strategy doesn't doesn't really work that well, but and I wonder if you think about when we talk to CSOS for example, and you ask them what's your biggest challenge? They'll say things like lack of talent. We got too many tools. It's just as we're on the hamsters on wheels. So I would think that's, you know, unfortunately for some, but it's good for your, your business. That's that's a dynamic that you can help with. I mean you're a services organization, you got deep expertise in this. So I wonder if you could, could talk a little bit about that, that lack of talent, that skills gap and how you guys address that. >>I think this is really the fit for managed services providers like Kendrell, um, certainly with some of our largest clients, if we look at Peta as an example, that notion of phone a friend is really important when it starts to go down and you're not sure what you're gonna do next. You want the expertise, you want to be able to phone someone and you want to be able to rely on them to help you recover your most critical data. One of the things clients have also been asking us for is a vaulted capability, almost like the safe deposit box for your data and your critical applications. Being able to put them somewhere and then in the event of needing to recover, um, you certainly could call someone to help you do exactly that >>Ellen. I wonder if you can address this. I mean, I like IBM I was I'm a customer. I trust IBM. What's your relationship? Are you still gonna, you know, be able to allow me to tap the pieces that that I like and maybe you guys can be more agile in some respects, maybe you can talk about that a little bit. >>She has Sure, Dave and many of our clients, we have a long history with a very positive experience of delivering, you know, market leading and high high quality of services and product the relationship continue. So we will remain very close to IBM and we will continue to work with many of IBM's customers as will IBM work with our customers going forward. So the relationship, I believe whilst a different dynamic will continue and I believe engenders an opportunity for growth and you know, we mentioned earlier the very name signifies the fact that it's new growth and I do think that that partnership will continue and we'll continue together to deliver the type of service, the quality of products and services that our clients have, you know, enjoyed from IBM over the last number of years, >>Michelle my, one of my takeaway from your earlier comments as you guys are hands on consultative in nature. Um, and I think about the comment I made about a lot of Ceo said we were way too d our focus. But when I think about d are a lot of times it was a checkbox to the board. Hey, we got it. But it was last time you tested it. Well, we don't test it because it's too risky to test. You know, we, we do fail over, but we don't fail back because it's just too risky. Can I stress test, you know, my environment, we, at the point now where technology and expertise will allow us to do that is that part of what you bring to the table? >>It is exactly exactly what we bring to the table. So from a first of all, from a compliance and regulatory perspective, you no longer have that option. A lot of the auditors are asking you to demonstrate your d our plan. We have technology and I think we've talked about this before about the automation that we have in our portfolio with resiliency orchestration that allows you to see the risk in your environment on a day to day basis. Proactively manage it. I tried to recover this, there's a there's a failure and then you're able to proactively address it. I also give the example from a resiliency orchestration perspective in this very powerful software automation that we have for D. R. We've had clients that have come in scheduled A. D. R. Test, it was to be all day they've ordered in lunch And the D. R. test fail over failed back took 22 minutes and lunch was canceled. >>I love >>it. >>so erin you're a technique for a Cloudera, you're a whiz kid from Brown, you have, how many Brown people are engineers here at Cloudera >>as of monday, we have five full timers and two interns at the moment and we're trying to hire more all the time. >>Mhm. So how many interns? >>Uh two interns from Brown this this summer? A few more from other schools? Cool, >>I'm john furry with silicon angle dot com. Silicon angle dot tv. We're here in the cloud era office in my little mini studio hasn't been built out yet, It was studio, we had to break it down for a doctor, ralph kimball, not richard Kimble from uh I called him on twitter but coupon um but uh the data warehouse guru was in here um and you guys are attracting a lot of talent erin so tell us a little bit about, you know, how Claudia is making it happen and what's the big deal here, people smart here, it's mature, it's not the first time around this company, this company has some some senior execs and there's been a lot, a lot of people uh in the market who have been talking about uh you know, a lot of first time entrepreneurs doing their startups and I've been hearing for some folks in in the, in the trenches that there's been a frustration and start ups out there, that there's a lot of first time entrepreneurs and everyone wants to be the next twitter and there's some kind of companies that are straddling failure out there? And and I was having that conversation with someone just today and I said, they said, what's it like Cloudera and I said, uh, this is not the first time crew here in Cloudera. So, uh, share with the folks out there, what you're seeing for Cloudera and the management team. >>Sure. Well, one of the most attractive parts about working Cloudera for me, one of the reasons I, I really came here was have been incredibly experienced management team, Mike Charles, they've all there at the top of this Oregon, they have all done this before they founded startups, Growing startups, old startups and uh, especially in contrast with my, the place where I worked previously. Uh, the amount of experience here is just tremendous. You see them not making mistakes where I'm sure others would. >>And I mean, Mike Olson is veteran. I mean he's been, he's an adviser to start ups. I know he's been in some investors. Amer was obviously PhD candidates bolted out the startup, sold it to yahoo, worked at, yahoo, came back finish his PhD at stanford under Mendel over there in the PhD program over this, we banged in a speech. He came back entrepreneur residents, Excel partners. Now it does Cloudera. Um, when did you join the company and just take us through who you are and when you join Cloudera, I want your background. >>Sure. So I, I joined a little over a year ago is about 30 people at the time. Uh, I came from a small start up of the music online music store in new york city um uh, which doesn't really exist all that much anymore. Um but you know, I I sort of followed my other colleagues from Brown who worked here um was really sold by the management team and also by the tremendous market opportunity that that Hadoop has right now. Uh Cloudera was very much the first commercial player there um which is really a unique experience and I think you've covered this pretty well before. I think we all around here believe that uh the markets only growing. Um and we're going to see the market and the big data market in general get bigger and bigger in the next few years. >>So, so obviously computer science is all the rage and and I'm particularly proud of hangout, we've had conversations in the hallway while you're tweeting about this and that. Um, but you know, silicon angles home is here, we've had, I've had a chance to watch you and the other guys here grow from, you know, from your other office was a san mateo or san Bruno somewhere in there. Like >>uh it was originally in burlingame, then we relocate the headquarters Palo Alto and now we have a satellite up in san Francisco. >>So you guys bolted out. You know, you have a full on blow in san Francisco office. So um there was a big busting at the seams here in Palo Alto people commuting down uh even building their burning man. Uh >>Oh yeah sure >>skits here and they're constructing their their homes here, but burning man, so we're doing that in san Francisco, what's the vibe like in san Francisco, tell us what's going on >>in san Francisco, san Francisco is great. It's, I'm I live in san Francisco as do a lot of us. About half the engineering team works up there now. Um you know we're running out of space there certainly. Um and you're already, oh yeah, oh yeah, we're hiring as fast as we absolutely can. Um so definitely not space to build the burning man huts there like like there is down, down in Palo Alto but it's great up there. >>What are you working on right now for project insurance? The computer science is one of the hot topics we've been covering on silicon angle, taking more of a social angle, social media has uh you know, moves from this pr kind of, you know, check in facebook fan page to hype to kind of a real deal social marketplace where you know data, social data, gestural data, mobile data geo data data is the center of the value proposition. So you live that every day. So talk about your view on the computer science landscape around data and why it's such a big deal. >>Oh sure. Uh I think data is sort of one of those uh fundamental uh things that can be uh mind for value across every industry, there's there's no industry out there that can't benefit from better understanding what their customers are doing, what their competitors are doing etcetera. And that's sort of the the unique value proposition of, you know, stuff like Hadoop. Um truly we we see interest from every sector that exists, which is great as for what the project that I'm specifically working on right now, I primarily work on H. D. F. S, which is the Hadoop distributed file system underlies pretty much all the other um projects in the Hadoop ecosystem. Uh and I'm particularly working with uh other colleagues at Cloudera and at other companies, yahoo and facebook on high availability for H. D. F. S, which has been um in some deployments is a serious concern. Hadoop is primarily a batch processing system, so it's less of a concern than in others. Um but when you start talking about running H base, which needs to be up all the time serving live traffic than having highly available H DFS is uh necessity and we're looking forward to delivering that >>talk about the criticism that H. D. F. S has been having. Um Well, I wouldn't say criticism. I mean, it's been a great, great product that produced the HDs, a core parts of how do you guys been contributing to the standard of Apache, that's no secret to the folks out there, that cloud area leads that effort. Um but there's new companies out there kind of trying a new approach and they're saying they're doing it better, what are they saying in terms and what's really happening? So, you know, there's some argument like, oh, we can do it better. And what's the what, why are they doing it, that was just to make money do a new venture, or is that, what's your opinion on that? Yeah, >>sure. I mean, I think it's natural to to want to go after uh parts of the core Hadoop system and say, you know, Hadoop is a great ecosystem, but what if we just swapped out this part or swapped out that part, couldn't couldn't we get some some really easy gains. Um and you know, sometimes that will be true. I have confidence that that that just will not simply not be true in in the very near future. One of the great benefits about Apache, Hadoop being open source is that we have a huge worldwide network of developers working at some of the best engineering organizations in the world who are all collaborating on this stuff. Um and, you know, I firmly believe that the collaborative open source process produces the best software and that's that's what Hadoop is at its very core. >>What about the arguments are saying that, oh, I need to commercialize it differently for my installed base bolt on a little proprietary extensions? Um That's legitimate argument. TMC might take that approach or um you know, map are I was trying to trying to rewrite uh H. T. F. >>S. To me, is >>it legitimate? I mean is there fighting going on in the standards? Maybe that's a political question you might want to answer. But give me a shot. >>I mean the Hadoop uh isn't there's no open standard for Hadoop. You can't say like this is uh this is like do compatible or anything like that. But you know what you can say is like this is Apache Hadoop. Uh And so in that sense there's no there's no fighting to be had there. Um Yeah, >>so yeah. Who um struggling as a company. But you know, there's a strong head Duke D. N. A. At yahoo, certainly, I talked with the the founder of the startup. Horton works just announced today that they have a new board member. He's the guy who's the Ceo of Horton works and now on bluster, I'm sorry, cluster announced they have um rob from benchmark on the board. Uh He's the Ceo of Horton works and and one of my not criticisms but points about Horton was this guy's an engineer, never run a company before. He's no Mike Olson. Okay, so you know, Michaelson has a long experience. So this guy comes into running and he's obviously in in open source, is that good for Yahoo and open sources. He they say they're going to continue to invest in Hadoop? They clearly are are still using a lot of Hadoop certainly. Um how is that changing Apache, is that causing more um consolidation, is that causing more energy? What's your view on the whole Horton works? Think >>um you know, yahoo is uh has been and will continue to be a huge contributor. Hadoop, they uh I can't say for sure, but I feel pretty confident that they have more data under management under Hadoop than anyone else in the world and there's no question in my mind that they'll continue to invest huge amounts of both key way effort and engineering effort and uh all of the things that Hadoop needs to to advance. Um I'm sure that Horton works will continue to work very closely with with yahoo. Um And you know, we're excited to see um more and more contributors to to Hadoop um both from Horton works and from yahoo proper. >>Cool, Well, I just want to clarify for the folks out there who don't understand what this whole yahoo thing is, It was not a spin out, these were key Hadoop core guys who left the company to form a startup of which yahoo financed with benchmark capital. So, yahoo is clearly and told me and reaffirm that with me that they are clearly investing more in Hadoop internally as well. So there's more people inside, yahoo that work on Hadoop than they are in the entire Horton's work company. So that's very clear. So just to clear that up out there. Um erin. so you're you're a young gun, right? You're a young whiz like Todd madam on here, explain to the folks out there um a little bit older maybe guys in their thirties or C IOS a lot of people are doing, you know, they're kicking the tires on big data, they're hearing about real time analytics, they're hearing about benefits have never heard before. Uh Dave a lot and I on the cube talk about, you know, the transformations that are going on, you're seeing AMC getting into big data, everyone's transforming at the enterprise level and service provider. What explains the folks why Hadoop is so important. Why is that? Do if not the fastest or one of the fastest growing projects in Apache ever? Sure. Even faster than the web server project, which is one of the better, >>better bigger ones. >>Why is the dupes and explain to them what it is? Well, you know, >>it's been it's pretty well covered that there's been an explosion of data that more data is produced every every year over and over. We talk about exabytes which is a quantity of data that is so large that pretty much no one can really theoretically comprehend it. Um and more and more uh organizations want to store and process and learn from, you know, get insights from that data um in addition to just the explosion of data um you know that there is simply more data, organizations are less willing to discard data. One of the beauties of Hadoop is truly that it's so very inexpensive per terabyte to store data that you don't have to think up front about what you want to store, what you want to discard, store it all and figure out later what is the most useful bits we call that sort of schema on read. Um as opposed to, you know, figuring out the schema a priority. Um and that is a very powerful shift in dynamics of data storage in general. And I think that's very attractive to all sorts of organizations. >>Your, I'll see a Brown graduate and you have some interns from Brown to Brown um, Premier computer science program almost as good as when I went to school at Northeastern University. >>Um >>you know, the unsung heroes of computer science only kidding Brown's great program, but you know, cutting edge computer science areas known as obviously leading in a lot of the computer science areas do in general is known that you gotta be pretty savvy to be either masters level PhD to kind of play in this area? Not a lot of adoption, what I call the grassroots developers. What's your vision and how do you see the computer science, younger generation, even younger than you kind of growing up into this because those tools aren't yet developed. You still got to be, you're pretty strong from a computer science perspective and also explained to the folks who aren't necessarily at the browns of the world or getting into computer science, what about, what is that this revolution about and where is it going? What are some of the things you see happening around the corner that that might not be obvious. >>Sure there's a few questions there. Um part of it is how do people coming out of college get into this thing, It's not uh taught all that much in school, How do how do you sort of make the leap from uh the standard computer science curriculum into this sort of thing? And um you know, part of it is that really we're seeing more and more schools offering distributed computing classes or they have grids available um to to do this stuff there there is some research coming out of Brown actually and lots of other schools about Hadoop proper in the behavior of Hadoop under failure scenarios, that sort of stuff, which is very interesting. Google uh actually has classes that they teach, I believe in conjunction with the University of Washington um where they teach undergraduates and your master's level, graduate students about mass produced and distributed computing and they actually use Hadoop to do it because it is the architecture of Hadoop is modeled after um >>uh >>google's internal infrastructure. Um So you know that that's that's one way we're seeing more and more people who are just coming out of college who have distributed systems uh knowledge like this? Um Another question? the other part of the question you asked is how does um how does the ordinary developer get into this stuff? And the answer is we're working hard, you know, we and others in the hindu community are working hard on making it, making her do just much easier to consume. We released, you cover this fair bit, the ECM Express project that lets you install Hadoop with just minimal effort as close to 11 click as possible. Um and there's lots of um sort of layers built on top of Hadoop to make it more easily consumed by developers Hive uh sort of sequel like interface on top of mass produce. And Pig has its own DSL for programming against mass produce. Um so you don't have to write heart, you don't have to write straight map produced code, anything like that. Uh and it's getting easier for operators every day. >>Well, I mean, evolution was, I mean, you guys actually working on that cloud era. Um what about what about some of the abstractions? You're seeing those big the Rage is, you know, look back a year ago VM World coming up and uh little plugs looking angle dot tv will be broadcasting live and at VM World. Um you know, he has been on the Q XV m where um Spring Source was a big announcement that they made. Um, Haruka brought by Salesforce Cloud Software frameworks are big, what does that look like and how does it relate to do and the ecosystem around Hadoop where, you know, the rage is the software frameworks and networks kind of collide and you got the you got the kind of the intersection of, you know, software frameworks and networks obviously, you know, in the big players, we talk about E M C. And these guys, it's clear that they realize that software is going to be their key differentiator. So it's got to get to a framework stand, what is Hadoop and Apache talking about this kind of uh, evolution for for Hadoop. >>Sure. Well, you know, I think we're seeing very much the commoditization of hardware. Um, you just can't buy bigger and bigger computers anymore. They just don't exist. So you're going to need something that can take a lot of little computers and make it look like one big computer. And that's what Hadoop is especially good at. Um we talk about scaling out instead of scaling up, you can just buy more relatively inexpensive computers. Uh and that's great. And sort of the beauty of Hadoop, um, is that it will grow linearly as your data set as your um, your your scale, your traffic, whatever grows. Um and you don't have to have this exponential price increase of buying bigger and bigger computers, You can just buy more. Um and that that's sort of the beauty of it is a software framework that if you write against it. Um you don't have to think about the scaling anymore. It will do that for you. >>Okay. The question for you, it's gonna kind of a weird question but try to tackle it. You're at a party having a few cocktails, having a few beers with your buddies and your buddies who works at a big enterprise says man we've got all this legacy structured data systems, I need to implement some big data strategy, all this stuff. What do I do? >>Sure, sure. Um Not the question I thought you were going to ask me that you >>were a g rated program here. >>Okay. I thought you were gonna ask me, how do I explain what I do to you know people that we'll get to that next. Okay. Um Yeah, I mean I would say that the first thing to do is to implement a start, start small, implement a proof of concept, get a subset of the data that you would like to analyze, put it, put Hadoop on a few machines, four or five, something like that and start writing some hive queries, start writing some some pig scripts and I think you'll you know pretty quickly and easily see the value that you can get out of it and you can do so with the knowledge that when you do want to operate over your entire data set, you will absolutely be able to trivially scale to that size. >>Okay. So now the question that I want to ask is that you're at a party and I want to say, what do you >>do? You usually tell people in my hedge fund manager? No but seriously um I I tell people I work on distributed supercomputers. Software for distributed supercomputers and that people have some idea what distributed means and supercomputers and they figure that out. >>So final question for I know you gotta go get back to programming uh some code here. Um what's the future of Hadoop in the sense of from a developer standpoint? I was having a conversation with a developer who's a big data jockey and talking about Miss kelly gets anything and get his hands on G. O. Data, text data because the data data junkie and he says I just don't know what to build. Um What are some of the enabling apps that you may see out there and or you have just conceiving just brainstorming out there, what's possible with with data, can you envision the next five years, what are you gonna see evolve and what some of the coolest things you've seen that might that are happening right now. >>Sure. Sure. I mean I think you're going to see uh just the front ends to these things getting just easier and easier and easier to interact with and at some point you won't even know that you're interacting with a Hadoop cluster that will be the engine underneath the hood but you know, you'll you'll be uh from your perspective you'll be driving a Ferrari and by that I mean you know, standard B. I tool, standard sequel query language. Um we'll all be implemented on top of this stuff and you know from that perspective you could implement, you know, really anything you want. Um We're seeing a lot of great work coming out of just identifying trends amongst masses of data that you know, if you tried to analyze it with any other tool, you'd either have to distill it down so far that you would you would question your results or that you could only run the very simplest sort of queries over um and not really get those like powerful deep insights, those sort of correlative insights um that we're seeing people do. So I think you'll see, you'll continue to see uh great recommendations systems coming out of this stuff. You'll see um root cause analysis, you'll see great work coming out of the advertising industry um to you know to really say which ad was responsible for this purchase. Was it really the last ad they clicked on or was it the ad they saw five weeks ago they put the thought in mind that sort of correlative analysis is being empowered by big data systems like a dupe. >>Well I'm bullish on big data, I think people I think it's gonna be even bigger than I think you're gonna have some kids come out of college and say I could use big data to create a differentiation and build an airline based on one differentiation. These are cool new ways and, and uh, data we've never seen before. So Aaron, uh, thanks for coming >>on the issue >>um, your inside Palo Alto Studio and we're going to.
