Really exciting topic coming up for you next, please. Welcome Blake shoulda, founder and CEO of boom supersonic Blake. It's great to have you on the program. Thank you for having me, Lisa, and your background gives me all the way with what we're going to talk about in the next few minutes or so, but supersonic flight has existed for quite a long time, like 50 or so years. I think those of us in certain generations remember the Concorde for example, but the technology to make it efficient and mainstream is only recently been approved by or accepted by regulators. Tell us a little bit about boom, your mission to make the world more accessible with supersonic commercial flight. Well, a supersonic flight has >> actually been around since 1949 when Chuck Yeager broke the speed barrier or sorry, the sound barrier. >>And as, as many of you know, he actually passed yesterday, uh, 97. So very, very sad to see one of the supersonic pioneers behind us. Uh, but, uh, but as I say goodbye to Jaeger, a new era of supersonic flight is here. And if you look at the history of progress and transportation, since the Dawn of the industrial revolution, uh, we used to make regular progress and speed. As we went from, uh, the horse to the iron horse, to the, the boats, to the, the early propeller airplanes that have the jet age. And what happened was every time we made transportation faster, instead of spending less time traveling, we actually spent more time traveling because there were more places to go, more people to meet. Uh, we haven't had a world war since the Dawn of the jet age. Uh, places like Hawaii have become, uh, a major tourist destination. >>Uh, but today, uh, today it's been 60 years since we've had a mainstream re uh, step forward and speed. So what we're doing here at boom is picking up where Concord left off building an aircraft that flies faster by factor to the, anything you can get a ticket on today. And yet is 75% more affordable than Concorde was. So we want to make Australia as accessible as a why yesterday. We want to enable you to cross the Atlantic, do business, be home in time, detect your kids into bed, or take a three-day business trip to Asia and let you do it in just 24 >> hours. I like the sound of all of that. Even getting on a plane right now in general. I think we all do so, so interesting that you, you want to make this more accessible. And I did see the news about Chuck Yeager last night. >>Um, designing though the first supersonic airliner overture, it's called in decades, as you said, this dates back 60 years, rolling it out goal is to roll it out in 2025 and flying more than 500 trans oceanic routes. Talk to me about how you're leveraging technology and AWS to help facilitate that. Right. Well, so one of the really fascinating things is the new generation of airplanes, uh, are getting born in the cloud and then they're going to go fly through actual clouds. And so there are, there are a bunch of revolutions in technology that have happened since Concord's time that are enabling what we're doing now, their breakthroughs and materials. We've gone from aluminum to carbon fiber they're breakthroughs and engines. We've gone from after burning turbo jets that are loud and inefficient to quiet, clean, efficient turbo fans. But one of the most interesting breakthroughs has been in a available to do design digitally and iteration digitally versus, uh, versus physically. >>So when conquer was designed as an example, they were only able to do about a dozen wind tunnel tests because they were so expensive. And so time consuming and on, uh, on our XP one aircraft, which is our prototype that rolled out in October. Um, uh, we did hundreds of iterations of the design in virtual wind tunnels, where we could spin up a, uh, a simulation and HPC cluster in AWS, often more than 500 cores. And then we'd have our airplanes flying through virtual wind tunnels, thousands of flights scenarios you can figure out which were the losers, which were the winners keep iterating on the winners. And you arrive at an aerodynamic design that is more efficient at high speed. We're going very safely, very quickly in a straight line, but also a very smooth controllable for safe takeoff and landing. And the part of the artist supersonic airplane design is to accomplish both of those things. One, one airplane, and, uh, being able to design in the cloud, the cloud allows us to start up to do what previously only governments and militaries could do. I mentioned we rolled out our XP one prototype in October. That's the first time anyone has rolled out a supersonic civil aircraft since the Soviet union did it in 1968. And we're able to do as a startup because of computing. >>That's incredible born in the cloud to fly in the cloud. So talk to me about a lot of, of opportunity that technology has really accelerated. And we've seen a lot of acceleration this year in particular digital transformation businesses that if they haven't pivoted are probably in some challenging waters. So talk to us about how you're going all in with AWS to facilitate all these things that you just mentioned, which has dramatic change over 12, uh, when tone test for the Concord and how many times did it, >>Uh, I mean for 27 years, but not that many flights, never, it never changed the way mainstream, uh, never, never district some of you and I fly. Right. Um, so, so how, how are we going all in? So we've, you know, we've been using AWS for, uh, you know, basically since the founding of the company. Uh, but what we, what we're doing now is taking things that we were doing outside of the cloud and cloud. Uh, as an example, uh, we have 525 terabytes of XP one design and test data that what used to be backed up offsite. Um, and, and what we're doing is migrating into the cloud. And then your data is next. Your compute, you can start to do these really interesting things as an example, uh, you can run machine learning models to calibrate your simulations to your wind tunnel results, which accelerates convergence allows you to run more iterations even faster, and ultimately come up with a more efficient airplane, which means it's going to be more affordable for all of us to go to go break the sound barrier. >>And that sounds like kind of one of the biggest differences that you just said is that it wasn't built for mainstream before. Now, it's going to be accessibility affordability as well. So how are you going to be leveraging the cloud, you know, design manufacturing, but also other areas like the beyond onboard experience, which I'm already really excited to be participating in in the next few years. >>Yeah. So there's so many, so many examples. We've talked about design a little bit already. Uh, it's going to manifest in the manufacturing process, uh, where the, the, the, the, the supply chain, uh, will be totally digital. The factory operations will be run out of the cloud. You know, so what that means concretely is, uh, you know, literally there'll be like a million parts of this airplane. And for any given unit goes through their production line, you'll instantly know where they all are. Um, you'll know which serial numbers went on, which airplanes, uh, you'll understand, uh, if there was a problem with one of it, how you fixed it. And as you continue to iterate and refine the airplane, this, this is one of things that's actually a big deal, uh, with, with digital in the cloud is, you know, exactly what design iteration went into, exactly which airplane and, uh, and that allows you to actually iterate faster and any given airline with any given airplane will actually know exactly what, what airplane they have, but the next one that rolls off the line might be even a little bit better. >>And so it allows you to keep track of all of that. It allows you to iterate faster, uh, it allows you to spot bottlenecks in your supply chain before they impact production. Um, and then it allows you to, uh, to do preventive maintenance later. So there's to be digital interpretation all over the airplane, it's going to update the cloud on, you know, uh, are the engines running expected temperature. So I'm gonna run a little bit hot, is something vibrating more than it should vibrate. And so you catch these things way before there's any kind of real maintenance issue. You flag it in the cloud. The next time the airplane lands, there's a tech waiting for the airplane with whatever the part is and able to install it. And you don't have any downtime, and you're never anywhere close to a safety issue. You're able to do a lot more preventively versus what you can do today. >>Wow. So you have to say that you're going to be able to, to have a hundred percent visibility into manufacturing design, everything is kind of an understatement, but you launched XQ on your prototype in October. So during the pandemic, as I mentioned, we've been talking for months now on the virtual cube about the acceleration of digital transformation. Andy, Jassy talked about it in his keynote at AWS reinventing, reinventing this year, virtual, what were some of the, the, the advantages that you got, being able to stay on track and imagine if you were on track to launch in October during a time that has been so chaotic, uh, everywhere else, including air travel. >>Well, some of it's very analog, uh, and some of it's very digital. So to start with the analog, uh, we took COVID really seriously at Bo. Uh, we went into that, the pandemic first hit, we shut the company down for a couple of weeks, so we'd kind of get our feet underneath of us. And then we sort of testing, uh, everyone who had to work on the airplane every 14 days, we were religious about wearing masks. And as a result, we haven't had anyone catch COVID within the office. Um, and I'm super proud that we're able to stay productive and stay safe during the pandemic. Um, and you do that, but kind of taking it seriously, doing common sense things. And then there's the digital effort. And, uh, and so, you know, part of the company runs digitally. What we're able to do is when there's kind of a higher alert level, we go a little bit more digital when there's a lower alert level. >>Uh, we have more people in the office cause we, we still really do value that in-person collaboration and which brings it back through to a bigger point. It's been predicted for a long time, that the advent of digital communication is going to cause us not to need to travel. And, uh, what we've seen, you know, since the Dawn of the telephone is that it's actually been the opposite. The more you can know, somebody even a little bit, uh, at distance, the hungry you are to go see them in person, whether it's a business contact or someone you're in love with, um, no matter what it is, there's still that appetite to be there in person. And so I think what we're seeing with the digitization of communication is ultimately going to be very, um, uh, it's very complimentary with supersonic because you can get to know somebody a little bit over a long distance. You can have some kinds of exchanges and then you're, and then the friction for be able to see them in person is going to drop. And that is, uh, that's a wonderful combination. >>I think everybody on the planet welcomes that for sure, given what we've all experienced in the last year, you can have a lot of conversations by zoom. Obviously this was one of them, but there is to your point, something about that in-person collaboration that really takes things can anyway, to the next level. I am curious. So you launched XB one in October, as I mentioned a minute ago, and I think I read from one of your press releases planning to launch in 2025, the overture with over 500 trans oceanic routes. What can we expect from boom and the next year or two, are you on track for that 2025? >>Yeah. Things are going, things are going great. Uh, so to give a sense of what the next few years hold. So we rolled out the assembled XB one aircraft this year, uh, next year that's going to fly. And so that will be the first civil supersonic, uh, flying aircraft ever built by an independent company. Uh, and along the way, we are building the foundation of overture. So that design efforts happening now as XB one is breaking the sound barrier. We'll be finalizing the overture design in 22, we'll break ground in the factory in 23, we'll start building the first airplane and 25, we'll roll it out. And 26 we'll start flight tests. And, uh, and then we'll go through the flight test methodically, uh, systematically as carefully as we can, uh, and then be ready to carry passengers as soon as we are convinced that safe, which will be right around the end of the decade, most likely. >>Okay. Exciting. And so it sounds like you talked about the safety protocols that you guys put in place in the office, which is great. It's great to hear that, but also that this, this time hasn't derailed because you have the massive capabilities of, to be able to do all of the work that's necessary, way more than was done with before with the Concorde. And that you can do that remotely with cloud is a big facilitator of that communication. >>Yeah. You're able to do the cloud enables a lot of computational efficiencies. And I think about the, um, many times projects are not measured in how many months or years exactly does it take you to get done, but it's actually much easier to think about in terms of number of iterations. And so every time we do an airplane iteration, we look at the aerodynamics high speed. We look at the low speed. We look at the engine, uh, we look at the, the weights. Uh, we look at stability and control. We look at pilots, light aside, et cetera, et cetera. And every time you do an iteration, you're kind of looking around all of those and saying, what can I make better? But each one of those, uh, lines up a little bit differently with the rest now, for example, uh, uh, to get the best airplane aerodynamically, doesn't have a good view for the pilot. >>And that's why Concord had that droop nose famously get the nose out of the way so we can see the runway. And so we're able to do digital systems for virtual vision to let the pilot kind of look through the nose of the runway. But even then they're, trade-offs like, how, how good of an actual window do you need? And so your ability to make progress in all of this is proportional to how quickly you can make it around that, that iteration loop, that design cycle loop. And that's, that's part of where the cloud helps us. And we've, we've got some, uh, uh, some stuff we've built in house that runs on the cloud that lets you basically press a button with a whole set of airplane parameters. And bam, it gives you a, it gives you an instant report. I'm like, Oh, was it that this is a good change or bad change, uh, based on running some pretty high fidelity simulations with a very high degree of automation. And you can actually do many of those in parallel. And so it's about, you know, at this stage of the program, it's about accelerating, accelerating your design iterations, uh, giving everyone of the team visibility into those. And then, uh, I think you get together in person as it makes sense to now we're actually hitting a major design milestone with over-treat this week and we're, COVID testing everybody and get them all in the same room. Cause sometimes that in-person collaboration, uh, is really significant, even though you can still do so much digitally. >>I totally agree. There's there's certain things that you just can't replicate. Last question since my brother is a pilot for Southwest and retired Lieutenant Colonel from the air force, any special training that pilots will have to have, or are there certain pilots that are going to be maybe lower hanging fruit, if they have military experience versus commercial flight? Just curious. >>Yeah. So our XB one aircraft is being flown by test pilots. There's one ex Navy one ex air force on our crew, but, uh, overture, uh, will be accessible to any commercial pilot. So, uh, think about it as if you're, if you're used to flying Boeing, it'd be like switching to Airbus, uh, or vice versa. So the, uh, Concord is a complicated aircraft to fly because they didn't have computers. And all the complexity, the soup of supersonic flight was right there and the pilots and an overture, all that gets extracted by software. And, uh, you know, the, the, the ways the flight controls change over speed regimes. You don't have to worry about it, but the airplane is handled beautifully, no matter what you're doing. And so, uh, and so there are many, many places to innovate, but actually pilot experience, not one of them, >>Because the more conventional you can make it for people like your brother, the easier it's going to be for them to learn the aircraft. And therefore the safer it's going to be to fly. I'll let them know, like this has been fantastic, really exciting to see what boom supersonic is doing and the opportunities to make supersonic travel accessible. And I think at a time when everybody wants the world to open up, so by 20, 26, I'm going to be looking for my ticket. Awesome. Can't wait to have you on board. >> Welcome back to theCUBE's covering of AWS Public Sector Summit. In-person here in Washington, DC. I'm John Furrier, your host, great to be back face to face. We've got a great, special guest Clint Crosier, who is the Director of AWS' Aerospace & Satellite. Major General of The Air Force/Space Force. Retired. Great to see you in person again. Thanks for coming on theCUBE. >> Thank you for having me. I appreciate that. >> First of all, props to you for doing a great job at Amazon, bringing all your knowledge from Space Force and Air Force into the cloud. >> Thank you. >> So that's great, historical context. >> It's been valuable and it's provided a whole lot of insight into what we're building with the AWS space team, for sure. >> So number one question I get a lot is: We want more space content. What's the coolest thing going on in space? Is there a really a satellite behind the moon there, hidden there somewhere? What's the coolest thing going on in space? >> Well, the coolest thing that's going on in space, I think is you're seeing the rapid growth of the space industry, I mean, to me. I've been in the space industry for 34 years now, and there have been periods where we projected lots of growth and activity and it just didn't really come about, especially in the 80's and the 90's. But what we're seeing today is that growth is taking place. Whether it's the numbers of satellites that are being launched around the globe every year, there's some 3,000 objects on orbit today. Estimates are that there'll be 30,000 objects at the end of the decade, or the number of new companies, or the number of global spinning. It is just happening right now, and it's really exciting. >> So, when people say or hear space, there's a lot of economic changes in terms of the cost structures of how to get things deployed into space. That brings up the question of: Is space an opportunity? Is it a threat vector? What about congestion and security? >> Yeah, well three great things, absolutely an opportunity. We're seeing the rapid growth of the space industry, and we're seeing more commercialization than ever before. In my whole career, The Air Force or, NASA, or the NRO would sort of, hold things and do them themselves Today, you're seeing commercial contracts going out from the National Reconnaissance Office, NASA, from The Air Force, from the Space Force. So lots of opportunity for commercial companies. Security. Absolutely, priority number one should be security is baked into everything we do at AWS. And our customers, our Government classified customers tell us the reason they came to AWS is our security is top notch and certified for all their workloads. And as you well know, we have from unclassified all the way up to top secret capabilities on the AWS cloud. So just powerful opportunities for our customers. >> Yeah. And a lot of competitors will throw foot on that. I know, I've reported on some of that and not a lot of people have that same credential. >> Sure. >> Compared to the competition. >> Sure. >> Now I have to ask you, now that you have the top secret, all these clouds that are very tailorable, flexible with space: How are you helping customers with this Aerospace Division? Is it is a commercial? In the public sector together? What's the... >> All of the above. >> Take us through the value proposition. >> Yeah, happy to do this. So what we recognized over the last two years or so we, at AWS, recognized all this rapid growth that we're talking about within the space industry. Every sector from launch to on-orbit activities, to space exploration, all of it. And so AWS saw that and we looked at ourselves and said: "Do we have the right organization and expertise in place really to help our customers lean into that?" And the answer was: we decided to build a team that had deep experience in space, and that was the team that we grew because our thesis was: If you have a deep experience in space, a deep experience in cloud, you bring those two together and it's a powerful contribution. And so we've assembled a team with more than 500 years of collective hands-on experience, flying satellites, launching rockets. And when we sit down with our customers to innovate on their behalf, we're able to come up with some incredible solutions and I'm happy to talk about those. >> I'd love to, but tell you what, first of all, there's a lot of space nerds out there. I love space. I love space geeking out on the technology, but take us through the year you had, you've had a pretty incredible year with some results. You have that brain trust there. I know you're hiring. I know that people want to work for you. I'm sure the resumes are flying in, a lot of action. >> There is. >> What are the highlights from this year? >> So the highlights I think is, we've built a team that the industry is telling us was needed. Again, there was no organization that really served the space cloud industry. And so we're kind of building this industry within the industry, the space cloud industry. And so number one, just establishing that team and leaning into that industry has been valuable. The other thing that we're real proud of is we built a global team, because space is a global enterprise. We have teams in Europe and in Asia and South America here in the U.S., so we built a global team. One of the things that we did right up front, we weren't even six months old, when we envisioned the idea of doing the AWS Space Accelerator. And some of the folks told me: "Clint, six months under your belt, maybe you ought to get your feet under you." And I said: "No, no. We move fast to support our customers." And so we made a call for any space startup that wanted to come on board with AWS and go through our four week Space Accelerator. We partnered with Sarah from Capital. And the idea was: if you're a small company that wants to grow and build and learn how you can use the cloud to gain competitive advantage, come with us. And so John, I would have been happy if we had 50 companies applied, we had 194 companies across 44 countries that applied to our accelerator. We had to down select a 10, but that was a tremendous accomplishment, two of those are speaking this afternoon, where they met each other at our accelerator and now have formed a partnership: Ursa Space and HawkEye 360 on how they build on the cloud together. Fascinating. >> Well, I love that story. First of all, I love the military mindset. No, we're not going to wait. >> Move it out. >> It's not take that hill, it's take that planet. >> Our customers won't wait, innovation, doesn't wait, the future doesn't wait. We have to move out. >> So, this brings up the entrepreneurship angle. We got there a little early, but I want to talk about it because it's super important. There's an entrepreneurial culture happening right now in the space community >> There is. At large, and it's getting bigger and wider. >> Bigger every day. >> What is that? What if someone says: "Hey, what's going on with entrepreneurship in this space? What are the key dynamics? What's the power dynamics?" It's not money, there's money out there, but like what's the structural thing happening? >> The key dynamic, I think, is we're seeing that we can unlock things that we could never do before. And one of our goals is: the more space data we can make more accessible to more people around the world. It unlocks things we couldn't do. We're working with space companies who are using space data to track endangered whales off the coast of California. We're working with companies that are using space data to measure thermal and greenhouse emissions for climate change and climate management. We're working with one company, Edgybees, who has a small satellite constellation, and they're using it to build satellite based, augmented reality, to provide it to first responders as they go into a disaster response area. And they get a 3D-view of what they're going into. None of those workloads were possible five years ago. And the cloud and cloud-based technologies are really what opens those kinds of workloads up. >> What kind of higher level services do you see emerging from space cloud? Because you know, obviously you have to have some infrastructure. >> Absolutely. Got to put some stuff into space. That's a supply chain, reliability, also threat. I mean, I can have a satellite attack, another satellite, or I'm just making that up, but I'm sure there's other scenarios that the generals are thinking about. >> So space security and cyberspace security is critical. And as I said, it's built into everything we do in all of our platforms, so you're absolutely right about that, but when we think about the entrepreneurship, you know, what we're seeing is, and I'll give you a good example of why the industry is growing so fast and why cloud. So one company we work with, LeoLabs. So Leo identified the growth in the LEO: Low Earth Orbit segment. 3,000 objects on orbit today, 30,000 tomorrow. Who's going to do the space traffic management for 30,000 objects in space that are all in the same orbital regime? And so LeoLabs built a process to do space traffic management, collision avoidance. They were running it on premises. It took them eight hours to do a single run for a single satellite conjunction. We got them to help understand how to use the cloud. They moved all that to AWS. Now that same run they do in 10 seconds. Eight hours to 10 seconds. Those are the kind of workloads as space proliferates in and we grow, that we just can't execute without cloud and cloud-based technologies. >> It's interesting, you know, the cloud has that same kind of line: move your workloads to the cloud and then refactor. >> Yeah. So space workloads are coming to the cloud. >> They are. >> Just changing the culture. So I have to ask you, I know there's a lot of young people out there looking for careers and interests. I mean, Cal poly is going into the high school now offering classes. >> Yeah So high school, there's so much interest in space and technology. What is the cultural mindset to be successful? Andy Jassy last year, reading and talk about the mindset of the builder and the enterprise CXO: "Get off your butt and start building" There's a space ethos going on. What is the mindset? Would you share your view on it? >> The mindset is innovation and moving fast, right? We, we lived, most of my career, in the time where we had an unlimited amount of money and unlimited amount of time. And so we were really slow and deliberate about how we built things. The future won't wait, whether it's commercial application, or military application, we have to move fast. And so the culture is: the faster we can move, The more we'll succeed, and there's no way to move faster than when you're building on the AWS cloud. Ground station is a good example. You know, the proposition of the cloud is: Don't invest your limited resources in your own infrastructure that doesn't differentiate your capability. And so we did that same thing with ground station. And we've said to companies: "Don't spend millions of dollars on developing your own ground station infrastructure, pay by the minute to use AWS's and focus your limited resources back in your product, which differentiate your space mission." and that's just been power. >> How is that going from customer perspective? >> Great. It's going great. We continue to grow. We added another location recently. And just in the last week we announced a licensed accelerator. One of the things our customers told us is it takes too long to work with global governments to get licensed, to operate around the world. And we know that's been the case. So we put together a team that leaned in to solve that problem, and we just announced the licensed accelerator, where we will work with companies to walk them through that process, and we can shave an 18 month process into a three or four month process. And that's been... we've gotten great response on that from our company. >> I've always said: >> I remember when you were hired and the whole space thing was happening. I remember saying to myself: "Man, if democratization can bring, come to space" >> And we're seeing that happening >> You guys started it and you guys, props to your team. >> Making space available to more and more people, and they'll dazzle us with the innovative ways we use space. 10 years ago, we couldn't have envisioned those things I told you about earlier. Now, we're opening up all sorts of workloads and John, real quick, one of the reasons is, in the past, you had to have a specific forte or expertise in working with space data, 'cause it was so unique and formatted and in pipeline systems. We're making that democratized. So it's just like any other data, like apps on your phone. If you can build apps for your phone and manage data, we want to make it that easy to operate with space data, and that's going to change the way the industry operates. >> And that's fundamentally, that's great innovation because you're enabling that. That's why I have to ask you on that note Of the innovation trends that you see or activities: What excites you the most? >> So a lot of things, but I'll give you two examples very quickly: One is high-performance compute. We're seeing more and more companies really lean in to understanding how fast they can go on AWS. I told you about LeoLabs, eight hours to 10 seconds. But that high-performance computes going to be a game changer. The other thing is: oh, and real quick, I want to tell you, Descartes Labs. So Descartes Labs came to us and said: "We want to compete in the Annual Global Top 500 supercomputer challenge" And so we worked with them for a couple of weeks. We built a workload on the AWS standard platform. We came in number 40 in the globe for the Top 500 super computer lists, just by building some workloads on our standard platform. That's powerful, high-performance compute. But the second example I wanted to give you is: digital modeling, digital simulation, digital engineering. Boom Aerospace is a company, Boom, that we work with. Boom decided to build their entire supersonic commercial, supersonic aircraft, digital engineering on the AWS cloud. In the last three years, John, they've executed 6,000 years of high-performance compute in the last three years. How do you do 6,000 years in compute in three years? You spin up thousands of AWS servers simultaneously, let them do your digital management, digital analysis, digital design, bring back a million different perturbations of a wing structure and then pick the one that's best and then come back tomorrow and run it again. That's powerful. >> And that was not even possible, years ago. >> Not at that speed, no, not at that speed. And that's what it's really opening up in terms of innovation. >> So now you've done it so much in your career, okay? Now you're here with Amazon. Looking back on this past year or so, What's the learnings for you? >> The learning is, truly how valuable cloud can be to the space industry, I'll admit to you most people in the space industry and especially in the government space industry. If you ask us a year ago, two years ago: "Hey, what do you think about cloud?" We would have said: "Well, you know, I hear people talk about the cloud. There's probably some value. We should probably look at that" And I was in the same boat, but now that I've dug deeply into the cloud and understand the value of artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced data analytics, a ground station infrastructure, all those things, I'm more excited than ever before about what the space industry can benefit from cloud computing, and so bringing that, customer by customer is just a really fulfilling way to continue to be part of the space industry. Even though I retired from government service. >> Is there a... I'm just curious because you brought it up. Is there a lot of people coming in from the old, the space industry from public sector? Are they coming into commercial? >> Absolutely. >> Commercial rising up and there's, I mean, I know there's a lot of public/private partnerships, What's the current situation? >> Yeah, lots of partnerships, but we're seeing an interesting trend. You know, it used to be that NASA led the way in science and technology, or the military led the way in science and technology, and they still do in some areas. And then the commercial industry would follow along. We're seeing that's reversed. There's so much growth in the commercial industry. So much money, venture capital being poured in and so many innovative solutions being built, for instance, on the cloud that now the commercial industry is leading technology and building new technology trends that the military and the DOD and their government are trying to take advantage of. And that's why you're seeing all these commercial contracts being led from Air Force, Space Force, NASA, and NRO. To take advantage of that commercialization. >> You like your job. >> I love my job. (laughing) -I can tell, >> I love my job. >> I mean, it is a cool job. I kind of want to work for you. >> So John, space is cool. That's our tagline: space is cool. >> Space is cool. Space equals ratings in the digital TV realm, it is really, super exciting a lot of young people are interested, I mean, robotics clubs in high schools are now varsity sports, eSports, all blend together. >> Space, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced analytics. It's all becoming a singular sector today and it's open to more people than ever before, for the reasons we talked about. >> Big wave and you guys are building the surf boards, everyone a ride it, congratulations. >>live from Washington, D. C. >>It's the Cube >>covering Bumi World 19. Do you buy movie? >>Hey, welcome back to the Cube. We've got candy. That's right. I am Lisa Martin in Washington, D. C. At booming World 19 with John Ferrier and John and I are excited to be talking next with a chief technology officer of candy dot com. Gary, welcome to the Cube. >>Thank you for having me great to be here. >>So tell our audience about candy dot com Guinea all that you want dot com cool stuff. >>It is cool stuff. It is the endless. I'll just like going to the supermarket and never runs. Oh, it's absolutely perfect. That's actually how we started knowing that there was so much candy out there that people wanted in the lines just weren't long enough to put him in, no matter where you checked out, and we started off being the online candy store, which was a foot in the door, but it was a very small opening at that time. >>One of the things you said when I met you today whilst eating candy that you guys brought thank you very much for that was very appropriate. Um, was that candy? Is recession proof? >>It is. It's it's ah, you know, good times, bad times. You know, people are gonna have birthday parties. People get married holidays. They're going to come. You know, you've had a really great day. It's a candy bar. You know, you've had a really bad day. It's the candy bar. That's just it's an impulse buy, but it's an impulse buy with your favorite. I mean, it's something to comfort more than anything else, actually. And the technology side talk about how you guys were organized. What? Some of the challenges and how does Bumi fit in? Take us through the journey. Sure, when we started out, we thought, How hard could it be doing? Data entry will get the orders. They'll come across, we'll have some people. Instrument to the system will start filling up, you know, and then everything else will take care of itself. And within about a few minutes, we realized that that was probably not going to work. It was not scalable because first of all, data entry is air pro. You know, if you have someone actually trying to do with their, it's not gonna work for us. So we realized that there was a mechanism out there with Edie I and we went to 1/3 party provider to help us with the FBI. And that's how we started with the first couple of integrations and it was good. It got us off the ground and got us further into that door. >>So you started with, um, how many different partners trading partners take us back to kind of the last 10 years of candy dot com and how that Trading Partner Network has grown. >>Oh, it's like the journey. It's still we starts with the first step. We had one that was interested, one that wanted to work with Austin, and we started to do the work with them and figure out how to handle it. But they had multiple divisions, so, you know, there was only one that was 32 actual integrations that had to be done on being a traditional brick and mortar. It's very competitive. So once the word got out that they were work with us, there was a couple other. So we had six pretty big ones lined up early on that we needed to have integrated in up and running very quickly. >>And from a digital perspective, what were some of the initial system's applications that you implemented just start being able to manage and track those trading partner interactions to ensure that you're able to deliver? You know what? The candy, the candy demand that you need to fill? >>It was, sadly, a lot of C S V. A lot of email, a lot of phone calls back and forth. There was a lot of hours, and it was one those ones where we would really just bring in temps and try to keep up with it did not really have a repeatable process or a good technical footprint of what we needed to d'oh way didn't know what we didn't know when we started, and we very rapidly came to become aware of what we needed to do. >>So starting with air P Net sweet brought net Sweden two years ago. Tell us about that and what you thought was gonna solve all of our problems. Well, that's why it's >>a great package because it brought us both order management and it brought us here. Pee in. There were so many models and so much technology behind it and they have a warehouse module. There's, like all we could grow forever With this, it will never be bounded. This is gonna be fantastic. But what we forgot is that it was only as good as the data in there. And if we're using as a manual data entry, it's not going to meet our needs. We needed to come up with a better way in a more efficient way to get the data in. And this was still back in the day when we're trying to fulfill something within a week, much less where we're at today. >>Okay, so where does Bumi fit into play? >>We realized, unfortunately that even when you have an integration up and running and as good as the integration is, some of your trading partners will have changes. They're going to give you a different reference number. They're gonna give you a different requirement. They're gonna make something that was optional now mandatory. So we had problems because it wasn't just also that was impacting everyone that was doing an integration with that trading partner had it. So if I had outsourced it and there was 100 people that had that map. We were one of 100. Sometimes we were one, and sometimes we were as far away from one is possible and you understand that, and you appreciate it because there's only a finite number of hours to get things done. So we understood that to be really profitable and get to the level of service we needed to control the data. And that's when we decided that we needed to bring the E. D I and house. >>So when you were looking for the right integration partner, what was it about Bhumi from a technology perspective and a business perspective that really differentiated it. >>First and foremost, the number one requirement had to talk to nets. We had a have a native nets. We'd integration if it did not talk to net sweet. It wasn't gonna make it onto our plate because we weren't gonna spend the time to reinvent the wheel when obviously the wheel was out there. We had actually done that once before, and it was successful but painful. And there's people out there who build a connection and work to silver partners like blooming in the platinum partners that can go out and they can actually keep up with the release before it comes out. And you're being proactive by the reactive from a business need. It was We can't drop data. We need to be efficient. We need to be timely. We need visibility. And looking at Bumi, it met all those needs. We had a connection into nets. We had a reporting tool. We had error messages coming back. We had everything that we needed to manage our own world and take control of it. Or so we thought >>that look. Okay, so get this implemented. What sort of opportunities is the start opening up? You talked about control there, or so we thought. What have you been able to unlock where control is concerned? In the last few years, >>what we didn't realize with what we were doing is that way. We're just basically turning on everything and trying to run this efficiently and fast as possible. And that was really the wrong approach to take what we needed to do it as some governance to it as some logic to it, too, you know, not compete with jobs. There's there's a finite number of avenues into the back end system, you need to utilize it. But there was also tools that we found out inside this system that handled things like error trapping and retrial, logic and time outs and stuff like that. And as we worked with the subject matter experts at Boom, as we worked with the people at Nets, we in our account managers who would show us things and help us long. We learned a lot more about him. When we went live back in February of 2016 we were very excited. We did 1000 orders into our system and one day and we thought, How phenomenal is this? I mean, 1000 orders. How many more orders could you actually look for? And we very soon realized that there was a lot more orders willing to come into our system if we could handle it. >>So what? So when you first started with Bhumi went from some number 2 1000 orders today. What was that original number that you guys were able to handle when it was more of a manual process? >>It depend on how many attempts we could hire that sometimes it was 100 orders we got in. Sometimes it was 100% dependent on people. Also depend on someone, Remember, understands the spreadsheet. >>The Sun's painful, >>painful and not really easy to plan for. >>But you discovered pretty quickly you went from I won't say 0 to 1000. But somewhere in between that realized tha the capabilities, though of this system was gonna allow you to get 20,000 orders per day. Where was the demand coming from? Was it coming from trading partners was coming from their customers? Was it coming from your internal team seeing Hey, guys, I think there's a lot more power here than we originally thought. >>Well, success begets success because we were able to get an order in now in a timely fashion and ship it out there. All of a sudden, I realized we were shipping orders within 48 to 72 hours. It wasn't taking 10 days anymore, so we had repeat customers, which obviously makes your numbers go up. And then, as you know, your experience is good and you share it because social media is the weight of the world All the sudden, you know if if you tell two friends and they tell two friends we start getting more volume. Damn white starts happening is someone realizes they're losing market share of their brick and mortar website. And who was fulfilling the orders for them if they're doing so well and we're losing business and they start knocking on the door saying what? We'd like to work with you as well. And the other thing, too, is just timing. In the United States, it's pretty warm between April and October, and the bulk of perishable and heat sensitive product will ship through one of our warehouses because we have the thermal controls in the programs in place to give a good experience to make sure the product arrives the way it's supposed to be treated. >>Yeah, you were mentioning that when you were on stage this morning with Mandy Dolly Well, Mami CMO and Jason Maynard from Net Sweet that there are obviously, if you order some chocolate. I wanted to get there in the exact state in which I saw it online, right? But there's you've gotta have a lot of access, invisibility and systems to be able to help you facilitate that temperature control, depending on the type of product. >>Absolutely. So we're very proud of the fact that, you know, we're temperature controlled where humidity controlled were suf certified. We've done everything the right way to make sure that what we do is gonna be the best experience that your food is safe. Because, Paramount, the last thing we ever want to do is to keep a product of someone's gonna make your child sex because, you know, you don't want anyone to get sick. But the worst feeling is apparent is when your kid doesn't feel well. So we understand that Andi have a phenomenal staff. Are Q A team will go through and we have ways to test the product to get to the melting point. And we know different products melted different temperatures, and we determine what those temperatures are. We build those thresholds we do calls out to get the weather. No, I'm shipping it from my location to you. What's the temperature of my It doesn't matter if it's cold at your place. It is 90 where I'm shipping it from. So we look at what is it now? Where is it going? What's it gonna be the next few days? How big is it? You know how much product is in there with that? That isn't heat sensitive. And we have a pretty complex algorithm that we put in place That has really enabled us to handle the summer months and give a good product because, I mean a lot of people like s'mores, but they don't want the pre melted chocolate showing up at their house. >>Would agree. That takes the fun out of the bonfire part, right? Exactly. So let's talk about the people transformation because you were saying your 100% dependent on manual Somebody even sending the spreadsheet little into star inputting data to process X number of orders per day went from almost 0 to 1000 overnight with Bhumi, then saw this capacity for 20,000. How have has your team has other business units within candy like finance? How are they benefiting from all of this? What a presume is massive workforce productivity gains that you're giving everybody? >>Absolutely. It was a great problem tohave because as we got bigger and we started getting more and more orders than we got more and more invoices and you know, we got more and more checks in which we always think it's a good thing, but those checks need to be reconciled. They have to be reconciled against the transaction Inside the Nets week. It's no exaggeration that we would have pages printed out with a ruler going down and highlighting one by one on the invoice to make sure nothing was omitted. And we were spending an individual spent an eight hour day, three days a week, just going through direct missile. One invoice that was coming in and we would get two or three a week from them. So it was painful and again also error prone. And these people are very creative, very smart, and they offer so much more to the business that it was a waste of their time in a waste of their intellect. S o del. Booming, we found out, is not just any eyes phenomenal, Aditi, I but it has all these other tools and won. The tools we had was to be able to take the remittance file from the financial institution, reconcile it against the invoice is in the system and create a C S V import that would run that we have a script for that created a cash payment in our system that would actually close out the invoices and be paid so that we don't take care of it. It was done, and finance would basically get the file and e mail to us. We would file it back and they'd run an import. So instead of 250 hours a week, it was five minutes of file. >>That's a dramatics saving hundreds of hours a month, but also faster time to revenue recognition. >>That's a big one, you know, because when you try to get people discounts or give them brakes or if your terms are out there, it's nice to get it in there and keep your system's clean, because you also have to answer to the end of the month. You know you want to close the books and everything in manual processes. Air one the few things that you can't just throw more horsepower at. >>I'm glad you brought up, though from a resource kind of reallocation. Perspective is, these folks, in particular areas of the business, have value that they're not able before weren't able to really unlock and deliver. Now, with the technology in place, they're able to probably focus on more strategic areas of the business or more strategic projects. I also imagine your sales. We said faster time to revenue in revenue recognition, but big boost to candy dot comes sales. Since you've implemented the technology >>direct, I mean the sales numbers have just grown. I mean, as much as we do. No do are forecasting and think where it's going to go. Wee wee drastically underestimated this year. The summer was very, very good to us. Our first year under booming, we ran for 11 months. We did a little over 600,000 orders for that first year. In comparison, in June, July and August this year, we did over a 1,000,000 orders. That's a lot of chocolate. So a >>lot of candy, >>most certainly >>busier time, period. I mean Halloweens in a few weeks, Christmas is coming. How does that compare in terms of like the Flux >>way? Have a peek? Obviously, Halloween Halloween is obviously the time, of course. November 1st, our orders are zero because everyone walks in with a pillowcase of candy from their kids to the office, so it literally goes from a 1,000,000 miles an hour or two nothing, and it's it's kind of eerie. But throughout the summer we stay very, very busy because a lot of the market places don't have the facility and listen, they're great, you know, it's one stop shopping. They have everything, but everything is in a warehouse in that entire warehouse is not properly controlled to handle food products. So they decided it was an advantageous for them to ship, you know, during the summer, and it's poorly monitored as a summer Shipp program. But it's really more of a heat sensitive program because we'll add the thermal product to protect the thermal packaging to protect the product, even in February. I mean, there's some spots in Florida in Texas at a pretty one that you want to protect the item. So it's a heat sensitive program that we're very proud of, and we keep advancing and we keep growing. And, you know, I have. I'm very fortunate. I have a great team. I mean, we're not gonna call out, you know, like Jim and Scott, because that would be wrong to deal with. These guys have been with me from the start, and they put the E. T. I in place. They put the scripting in place that the guys were just, you know, rock stars on. Do I look good because of their effort? And I'm very, very proud of the team we've assembled that does this to make sure that you're and satisfaction is always met. >>Awesome story. So I imagine you know, when we hear like, four out of five dentists recommend this kind of bet. Is the fifth dentist recommending candy dot com? Is that where that guy's been? >>Yeah, he's got four kids >>going through college and >>everything, so he figures candy dot com to go. Mike Evans is here. He's the vice president of technical business development at Red Hat. Mike, good to see you. Thanks for coming back in the Cube. >> Right to be here. >> So, you know, we're talking hybrid cloud multi cloud. You guys have been on this open shift for half a decade. You know, there were a lot of deniers, and now it's a real tail one for you in the whole world is jumping on. That bandwagon is gonna make you feel good. >> Yeah. No, it's nice to see everybody echoing a similar message, which we believe is what the customers demand and interest is. So that's a great validation. >> So how does that tie into what's happening here? What's going on with the show? It's >> interesting. And let me take a step back for us because I've been working with Google on their cloud efforts for almost ten years now. And it started back when Google, when they were about to get in the cloud business, they had to decide where they're going to use caveat present as their hyper visor. And that was a time when we had just switched to made a big bet on K V M because of its alignment with the Lenox Colonel. But it was controversial and and we help them do that. And I look back on my email recently and that was two thousand nine. That was ten years ago, and that was that was early stages on DH then, since that time, you know, it's just, you know, cloud market is obviously boomed. I again I was sort of looking back ahead of this discussion and saying, you know, in two thousand six and two thousand seven is when we started working with Amazon with rail on their cloud and back when everyone thought there's no way of booksellers goingto make an impact in the world, etcetera. And as I just play sort of forward to today and looking at thirty thousand people here on DH you know what sort of evolved? Just fascinated by, you know, sort of that open sources now obviously fully mainstream. And there's no more doubters. And it's the engine for everything. >> Like maybe, you know, bring us inside. So you know KK Veum Thie underpinning we know well is, you know, core to the multi clouds tragedy Red hat. And there's a lot that you've built on top of it. Speak, speak a little bit of some of the engineering relationships going on joint customers that you have. Ah, and kind of the value of supposed to, you know, write Hatton. General is your agnostic toe where lives, but there's got to be special work that gets done in a lot of places. >> Ralph has a Google. Yeah, yeah, yeah. >> Through the years, >> we've really done a lot of work to make sure that relative foundation works really well on G C P. So that's been a that's been a really consistent effort and whether it's around optimization for performance security element so that that provides a nice base for anybody who wants to move any work loader application from on crime over there from another cloud. And that's been great. And then the other maid, You know, we've also worked with them. Obviously, the upstream community dynamics have been really productive between Red Hat and Google, and Google has been one of the most productive and positive contributors and participants and open source. And so we worked together on probably ten or fifteen different projects, and it's a constant interaction between our upstream developers where we share ideas. And do you agree with this kind of >> S O Obviously, Cooper Netease is a big one. You know, when you see the list, it's it's Google and Red Hat right there. Give us a couple of examples of some of the other ones. I >> mean again, it's K B M is also a foundation on one that people kind of forget about that these days. But it still is a very pervasive technology and continuing to gain ground. You know, there's all there's the native stuff. There's the studio stuff in the AML, which is a whole fascinating category in my mind as well. >> I like history of kind of a real student of industry history, and so I like that you talk to folks who have been there and try to get it right. But there was a sort of this gestation period from two thousand six to two thousand nine and cloud Yeah, well, like you said, it's a book seller. And then even in the down turn, a lot of CFO said, Hey, cap backstop ex boom! And then come out of the downturn. And it was shadow I t around that two thousand nine time frame. But it was like, you say, a hyper visor discussion, you know, we're going to put VM where in in In our cloud and homogeneity had a lot of a lot of traditional companies fumbling with their cloud strategies. And and And he had the big data craze. And obviously open source was a huge part of that. And then containers, which, of course, have been around since Lennox. Yeah, yeah, and I guess Doctor Boom started go crazy. And now it's like this curve is reshaping with a I and sort of a new era of data thoughts on sort of the accuracy of that little historical narrative and and why that big uptick with containers? >> Well, a couple of things there won the data, the whole data evolution and this is a fascinating one. For many, many years. I'm gonna be there right after nineteen years. So I've seen a lot of the elements of that history and one of the constant questions we would always get sometimes from investor. Why don't you guys buy a database company? You know, years ago and we would, you know, we didn't always look at it. Or why aren't you guys doing a dupe distribution When that became more spark, etcetera. And we always looked at it and said, You know, we're a platform company and if we were to pick anyone database, it would only cover some percentage and there's so many, and then it just kind of upsets the other. So we've we've decided we're going to focus, not on the data layer. We're going to focus on the infrastructure and the application layer and work down from it and support the things underneath. So it's consistent now with the AML explosion, which, you know, we're who was a pioneer of AML. They've got some of the best services and then we've been doing a lot of work within video in the last two years to make sure that all the GP use wherever they're run. Hybrid private cloud on multiple clouds that those air enabled and Raylan enabled in open shift. Because what we see happening and in video does also is right now all the applications being developed by free mlr are written by extremely technical people. When you write to tense airflow and things like that, you kind of got to be able to write a C compiler level, but so were working with them to bring open shift to become the sort of more mass mainstream tool to develop. A I aml enable app because the value of having rail underneath open shift and is every piece of hardware in the world is supported right for when that every cloud And then when we had that GPU enablement open shift and middleware and our storage, everything inherits it. So that's the That's the most valuable to me. That's the most valuable piece of ah, real estate that we own in the industry is actually Ralph and then everything build upon that and >> its interest. What you said about the database, Of course, we're a long discussion about that this morning. You're right, though. Mike, you either have to be, like, really good at one thing, like a data stacks or Cassandra or a mongo. And there's a zillion others that I'm not mentioning or you got to do everything you know, like the cloud guys were doing out there. You know, every one of them's an operational, you know, uh, analytics already of s no sequel. I mean, one of each, you know, and then you have to partner with them. So I would imagine you looked at that as well. I said, How're we going to do all that >> right? And there's only, you know, there's so many competitive dynamics coming at us and, you know, for we've always been in the mode where we've been the little guy battling against the big guys, whoever, maybe whether it was or, you know, son, IBM and HP. Unix is in the early days. Oracle was our friend for a while. Then they became. Then they became a nen ime, you know, are not enemy but a competitor on the Lennox side. And the Amazon was early friend, and then, though they did their own limits. So there's a competitive, so that's that's normal operating model for us to us to have this, you know, big competitive dynamic with a partnering >> dynamic. You gotta win it in the marketplace that the customers say. Come on, guys. >> Right. We'Ll figure it out >> together, Figured out we talked earlier about hybrid cloud. We talked about multi cloud and some people those of the same thing. But I think they actually you know, different. Yeah, hybrid. You think of, you know, on prim and public and and hopefully some kind of level of integration and common data. Plain and control plan and multi cloud is sort of evolved from multi vendor. How do you guys look at it? Is multi cloud a strategy? How do you look at hybrid? >> Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's a simple It's simple in my mind, but I know the words. The terms get used by a lot of different people in different ways. You know, hybrid Cloud to me is just is just that straightforward. Being able to run something on premise have been able to run something in any in a public cloud and have it be somewhat consistent or share a bowl or movable and then multi cloud has been able to do that same thing with with multiple public clouds. And then there's a third variation on that is, you know, wanting to do an application that runs in both and shares information, which I think the world's you know, You saw that in the Google Antos announcement, where they're talking about their service running on the other two major public cloud. That's the first of any sizable company. I think that's going to be the norm because it's become more normal wherever the infrastructure is that a customer's using. If Google has a great service, they want to be able to tell the user toe, run it on their data there at there of choice. So, >> yeah, so, like you brought up Antos and at the core, it's it's g k. So it's the community's we've been talking about and, he said, worked with eight of us work for danger. But it's geeky on top of those public clouds. Maybe give us a little bit of, you know, compare contrast of that open shift. Does open ship lives in all of these environments, too, But they're not fully compatible. And how does that work? So are >> you and those which was announced yesterday. Two high level comments. I guess one is as we talked about the beginning. It's a validation of what our message has been. Its hybrid cloud is a value multi clouds of values. That's a productive element of that to help promote that vision And that concept also macro. We talked about all of it. It it puts us in a competitive environment more with Google than it was yesterday or two days ago. But again, that's that's our normal world way partnered with IBM and HP and competed against them on unit. We partner with that was partnered with Microsoft and compete with them, So that's normal. That said, you know, we believe are with open shift, having five plus years in market and over a thousand customers and very wide deployments and already been running in Google, Amazon and Microsoft Cloud already already there and solid and people doing really things with that. Plus being from a position of an independent software vendor, we think is a more valuable position for multi cloud than a single cloud vendor. So that's, you know, we welcome to the party in the sense, you know, going on prom, I say, Welcome to the jungle For all these public called companies going on from its, you know, it's It's a lot of complexity when you have to deal with, You know, American Express is Infrastructure, Bank of Hong Kong's infrastructure, Ford Motors infrastructure and it's a it's a >> right right here. You know Google before only had to run on Google servers in Google Data Center. Everything's very clean environment, one temperature on >> DH Enterprise customers have it a little different demands in terms of version ality and when the upgrade and and how long they let things like there's a lot of differences. >> But actually, there was one of the things Cory Quinn will. It was doing some analysis with us on there. And Google, for the most part, is if we decide to pull something, you've got kind of a one year window to do, you know? How does Red Hot look at that? >> I mean, and >> I explained, My >> guess is they'LL evolve over time as they get deeper in it. Or maybe they won't. Maybe they have a model where they think they will gain enough share and theirs. But I mean, we were built on on enterprise DNA on DH. We've evolved to cloud and hybrid multi cloud, DNA way love again like we love when people say I'm going to the cloud because when they say they're going to the cloud, it means they're doing new APs or they're modifying old apse. And we have a great shot of landing that business when they say we're doing something new >> Well, right, right. Even whether it's on Prem or in the public cloud, right? They're saying when they say we'LL go to the club, they talk about the cloud experience, right? And that's really what your strategy is to bring that cloud experience to wherever your data lives. Exactly. So talking about that multi cloud or a Romney cloud when we sort of look at the horses on the track and you say Okay, you got a V M. We're going after that. You've got you know, IBM and Red Hat going after that Now, Google sort of huge cloud provider, you know, doing that wherever you look. There's red hat now. Course I know you can't talk much about the IBM, you know, certainly integration, but IBM Executive once said to me still that we're like a recovering alcoholic. We learned our lesson from mainframe. We are open. We're committed to open, so we'LL see. But Red hat is everywhere, and your strategy presumably has to stay that sort of open new tia going last year >> I give to a couple examples of long ago. I mean, probably five. Six years ago when the college stuff was still more early. I had a to seo conference calls in one day, and one was with a big graphics, you know, Hollywood Graphics company, the CEO. After we explained all of our cloud stuff, you know, we had nine people on the call explaining all our cloud, and the guy said, Okay, because let me just tell you, right, that guy, something the biggest value bring to me is having relish my single point of sanity that I can move this stuff wherever I want. I just attach all my applications. I attached third party APS and everything, and then I could move it wherever we want. So realize that you're big, and I still think that's true. And then there was another large gaming company who was trying to decide to move forty thousand observers, from from their own cloud to a public cloud and how they were going to do it. And they had. They had to Do you know, the head of servers, a head of security, the head of databases, the head of network in the head of nine different functions there. And they're all in disagreement at the end. And the CEO said at the end of day, said, Mike, I've got like, a headache. I need some vodka and Tylenol now. So give me one simple piece of advice. How do I navigate this? I said, if you just write every app Terrell, Andrzej, boss. And this was before open shift. No matter >> where you want >> to run him, Raylan J. Boss will be there, and he said, Excellent advice. That's what we're doing. So there's something really beautiful about the simplicity of that that a lot of people overlooked, with all the hand waving of uber Netease and containers and fifty versions of Cooper Netease certified and you know, etcetera. It's it's ah, it's so I think there's something really beautiful about that. We see a lot of value in that single point of sanity and allowing people flexibility at you know, it's a pretty low cost to use. Relish your foundation >> over. Source. It's great to see Google getting more and more invested in the cloud and more and more invested in the enterprise about. I think they've had great success in a lot of non enterprise accounts, probably more so than the other clowns. And now they're coming this way. They've got great technology. We've our engineers love working with their engineers, and now we've got a more competitive dynamic. And like I said, welcome to the jungle. >> We got Red Hat Summit coming up stew. I'm Lisa Martin with John Ferrier and we're welcoming to the King for the first time. Brian Stewart, managing director of Deloitte specifically in the h r transformation practice. Brian, thanks so much for joining us on the program today. >>Thanks for having me, >>Deloitte. Long time Global Systems integrator with Del Technologies del Bumi. You were on a customer panel this morning and the Kino that was very interesting. Talk to us about what? Deloitte His helping American Airlines transform with Del Boom. You mentioned This is, you know, this is a big, long duration transformation. American Airlines, well known, a lot of passengers. A lot of customers don't just about where you started three years ago, what that transformation has been like. >>Sure, in 2013 when American and US Airways came together, the first thing they did was focused on their customer world. And once they were able to get the customer rolled under control, they started looking at how they could take their employees world forward and what what we started to do was, as they said, we want to take successfactors and make that our system of record way came in to do the implementation. Okay, so we leverage Successfactors used elbow me to do the integration between all the external and internal systems. So it's some 136 plus integration State star systems and 327 internal systems spread out, you know, across the American Airlines. >>And what were some of the big results that you have helped them achieve to date? >>Well, I think for American the biggest thing was they wanted their employees experience to be the same as their customers never want it. They believe that if the employees experience is the best, it can be that the customers will have the best boss works pains. And so when they were able to do the implementation successfactors and tied together the integration points it allowed there and play experience to come up to the same standards as their customer experience. And for the first time, they had an integrated system that allowed them to get that view, provide consistent experience across the board and give them really give them place confidence. And they knew where to go to get their data, to manage their own data. >>About where you see Del Bumi succeeding where others haven't been successful, the attractions been great. A lot of watching might be looking at Dublin's Hey, okay, what's they're born in the cloud. What's why why were they successful? What's what's what's the key thing in your mind >>from our perspective, when we looked at the possible options way, looked at several possible metal wears and way Bumi stood out was to measure weight, scalability and flexibility going forward. When you're talking American Airlines, over the course of last 20 years, we're talking 325,000 plus employees that have traveled benefits. So in order to scale to that kind of number as we pull across, we had to have a solution that could be speed to build and pull that information on a regular basis. Okay, boom. He really check that box in the hard way where nobody else could. >>Big trend is different, you know, hit the easy, but not so easy when you're dealing with a lot of legacy integration points project timelines tend to get loaded in lengthened. That's the challenge. How to shorten those? Well, it's a big, big challenge. Howto customers get that that success point. >>There were a couple of different ways that we looked at handling that number one by using booming. We had all the pre built, you know, attachments to the FBI's for success factors. That was a big deal for us, because we're going to have speed to build, right? I mean, when you're talking 136 integrations that have now turned into 100 50 as after we've gone life, it's Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot to manage, and we can't have a situation where every little thing is it's custom built. Then things start to fall apart, right? It becomes a self fulfilling, snowballing top of prophecy. So the consistency provided by Bumi allowed us to get that speed, and then it also gave us the flexibility to make calls where sometimes there are challenges with that kind of volume of data to make the combined like ad hoc report calls with the A P, I calls and do innovative actions that most people haven't seen. I know some of the stuff we were doing. They said we didn't know you could do that way, pulled it off. >>Well, what a surprise. So that's the business. You want to be in success point where you can actually go out, get value of the data and deliver the user experience. Peace, >>right. And as we go forward and we continue to leverage a state AIDS, you know, HR systems are great. And like I said, American believes that with experience must mean customer experience. But it's often hard to determine our why exactly right. Because, you know, HR Systems. You know, it's not always clear, but one of things you can take it forward on is combining it with other data across the organization and looking at how we can tie the employee data using Bumi with data from airports or customer, and tie that out and provide insights going forward. >>You know, that's a big deal. And I think you're in the hr side of it. This personal practice you're in now, but I think you nailed what we hear a lot, which is Oh, we have a staff that's gonna help you. But you know about a horizontally scalable cloud fabric model, whether it's on premises or in cloud. But the data accessibility cross pollinates. That's a key value. >>Yeah, you know, when you look at things that can impact operations Dr Shareholder value I mean, when you can get insights on those type of things back and binding that set of data going across like you're talking about, it really changes what you can get out of the system. >>So it's more than just immigration platform at that point. Yeah, it's a data trust platform >>on booming searches underlying foundation friendly with that date around >>transformation theme of many events. Del Bumi coming out today and say we want to be the transformation transformation is now a sea level conversation. It's a board level conversation. It's an imperative, very challenging for businesses like American Airlines, who grow dramatically by opposition et cetera, but also weren't born in the cloud to undergo such transformation. When you were having conversations with customers, where are you going right to that sea level? The boardroom. This is alright, delight. We have to transform. We need your help to help us identify where we should start. What's that customer like inquiry Start like >>it depends. I mean, sometimes it's a question about what can the road map look like? Kind of what you're talking about from that sea level executive or way. Maybe in the middle of an implementation where we're identifying, you know, like, here's how we can leverage the state and take it forward and bringing that forward. You know, when you talk to one of the things that you see all the time, is people on the ground have wonderful ideas and understand exactly what you know. Changes could help impact the business. And listening to those people and putting together their thoughts and taking it forward is one of the things we do to try to make sure way actually leverage all parts off Clyde experience. So I think you can start the way you're talking about. But it can also start with, you know, I think when the gentleman I work with it at American senior manager and his ideas are something constantly collaborate on to try to come up with how we can improve American Airlines is business. >>So, uh, >>in terms of delights partnership as a global systems integrator with Delta me, you have choice customers have choice. It's It's about much more than integrating applications data people processes. Today, Dell, Gloomy came out and said, We want to be not just the transformation partner, but we're We're gonna redefine the eye and ipads intelligence percent McNab talked about. I pass to Dato from some of the things you heard presumably yesterday. The Partner Summit. What excites you about this new vision that Del Bhumi is bringing the iPads >>well, the opening up in the flexibility of the platform and to add your logic in as the represented from sky, I'll have talked about this morning understanding how you can add that logic and to drive changes to anything from customer experience. You know, adding the intelligence into your workflow being part of the, you know, their flow product that they're talking about, adding that intelligence in really changes the game on what you can do. And that is the most exciting part to me, because if you had that intelligence and you can save both a customer frustration, user user experience and the bottom line and you know you can, you can anticipate things more quickly and be able to help people sell them ourselves. >>Ryan, My final question for you is you seen different evolutions of deployments and consultancy projects over the years. They've gotten shorter in the gravy train of two year projects. Everyone's making money that because planes serviced just different animal Baxter, I t was different. Now cloud speed is critical. You mentioned scale earlier. I need speed. I need scale and I need to have automation. I don't want to be going back and uploading on the 138 6 integration and find out the 3rd 1 has problems. This is chasing your tail kind of philosophy. That's over this new world. What's different about this world we're living in now? If you had to tell a friend Hey, As you start going into digital transformation, watch out for these things. But do more of this. What would that advice be? How would you advise >>I think in? If I were to try to phrase it like that, It's the key that we look for his automation and everything. So one, the big challenges I know most people faces. All right, I contest these interfaces. I've quarterly releases. People talk about release fatigue, right? How can I oughta make my testing Sakhalin away because that doesn't come just out of the box right in, actually leverage moving for some of that. But But how can automate that cycle? Because what you're exactly right. People don't want to have to say tweet one value on my data model. Now I have to test 48 interfaces. I shouldn't have to generate 40 a day sets. It should be automated and ready to go. And I think that kind of speed is what we look at as a big changer for how we how we handle keeping those things compressed and not testing everything in the world every time >>and changes the productivity. Yeah. I mean, those are like, that's grunt work. You gotta go down and get down and dirty. If you don't have the automation, someone's gonna do that. It's a weekend, you know. I mean, we could be ruined basically at that point, >>and and you see that frustration, right? Because you know, if people have to do that nobody you have highly experienced in highly paid people, they don't want to sit there in top in data all day because it's a waste of their time. So it's not evaluate either. >>It's no, it's a waste of time. It's also wasted a lot of money. (bright samba music) >> Hello everyone and welcome back to The Cube's exclusive coverage here in Puerto Rico for Blockchain Unbound global conference where leaders from around the world, Silicon Valley, Miami, New York, all over the United States and Puerto Rico and Moscow and South Africa, all over the world come together to talk about the impact of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and a decentralized internet and the impact on society. Our next guest is David Orban. He's the managing director of Networking Society Ventures. Also does some investing. On the keynote speech of the closing session here on Day 1 of Blockchain Unbound. Thanks for joining me. >> Thank you very much for having me. >> So one of the big things that we're seeing in this revolution with blockchain and cryptocurrency is an awareness of how to reimagine democracy, society, and among other things, money transfer, and how that's impacting the world, from entrepreneurship to NGO's and society for good, AI for good, technology for good. So I got to ask ya, I heard some of your presentation, is there's some good tailwinds and some good headwinds in this industry, what's your assessment right now of the state of the globe with respect to how a network society will evolve and what are some of your observations and conclusions? >> One of our fundamental assumptions is that social change is only possible if sustainable technologies emerge to catalyze it. You know, if a slave rebellion won under the Roman Empire, the night of the victory, the slaves would be around the fire to decide who would be the slave the next morning, because they needed slaves to do everything. Today, not only we have achieved a level in our human civilization to outlaw slavery, we have incredible new inventions, like blockchain, to imagine a new social contract that is going to unstoppably come. >> This social contract is interesting, because now you have, I mean, democratization in digital transformation has been kicked around for a long time. Where are some real good examples that you can point to where you see really bright lights of innovation around democratization and digital transformation where it's working, and also where it's not working and what we need to do better? >> Certainly it is fashionable to pretend that technology hasn't helped. And one of the reasons why many people take that stance, is because they are confused. Too many simultaneous changes make the future even harder to predict today that it used to be the case 10, 20 or a hundred years ago. This is especially hard for those who are in charge of making those predictions, politicians, regulators, policy makers. We appointed or elected them in order to make decisions for everybody else. It is an impossible job, but they cannot afford to say that is the case. >> Yeah, and certainly we're in the media business and our model is open media, and even in the media you still have these gate keepers. So we see interesting trends, right so we're seeing disruption horizontally across all industries. If you look at blockchain and some of the things that are coming out, it's spurring real creativity from entrepreneurs as well as leaders, progressives if you will, that are being focused on efficiencies, which is spawning these little spots of innovation. I saw your use case around the solar panel. It was working. They killed it. So, you know, this is examples of where you see people get the value of really fast. So where are the efficiencies? Where's the value of creation coming from? What is blockchain? What is crypto? What is decentralized apps enabling? Is it, are we running too fast? Is it an enabling technology? What's your reaction, the thoughts? >> Some of us have been around in the first internet boom, 20 years ago, and the big three trillion dollars of value have been achieved by the dot-coms as measured by their market capitalization. And you would say, well, that bubble burst, and it all disappeared, but it didn't. We are still using the transatlantic fiber optic cables that were laid down then, and that created the premise for the next 20 years of technology based economic growth. So with blockchain, we are seeing the same, except that contrary to that, which was a quite provincial Silicon Valley phenomenon, blockchain innovation is today, global. So it is going to incredible places incredibly fast, and it is extremely competitive. There are projects that are doing the same thing, addressing the same challenge, all over the world. And it is fantastic. We even have a name for it. It's called forking or ray forking. >> Yeah, forking creates competition, but also faster time the value. Let's talk about the bubble. The dot-com bubble, which I lived through, and you have as well, was again, a Silicon Valley phenomenon, some New York, mostly America, basically, but everything happened. So everything that was talked about actually happened. But at that time, we didn't have a very wired community. Today we have organic communities in place, whether it's from open source communities online to actually a connected global network, AKA mobile internet. The role of communities now, seems to be that counter balancing self-governing opportunity. So I want to get your thoughts. Is the bubble going to be predicated, or letting some air out of that bubble, can it come from the communities? Because you could argue that efficiency in the communities with sourcing the truth if exposing the data can create very fast efficiencies around the transparency, so the thesis is, with the bubble behavior, also comes a connected community. So what's your view on the role of the community as a mechanism to continue to clean up or sanitize or whatever word we want to use to manage and help the self-governing? Because if it's organic ground swell, the communities should theoretically be monitoring and self-governing the growth. You thoughts. >> Those that are afraid of what is happening are incredibly capable of accusing the blockchain world of a thing and its opposite. Because they are saying, oh my god, the value, the metric value, which some mistakenly call the market capitalization, of tokens is increasing too fast, this is a bubble. And then maybe a month later, they will say, oh look it, everything is going to zero, I told you so. Well, either one is the problem or the other is the problem, but not both. The answer to your question is that yes, the community is expressing what is going on at the fine granularity that was not possible before because you would measure that by the subsequent venture funding stages of a startup, and maybe there would be a year or two years or more between one or the other of the stages. Today with tokens, every minute we are measuring the heartbeat of the project and the sentiment of the community around it. And everybody can vote with their tokens. Do I want to be part of this? Or I don't feel aligned anymore. And it is beautiful. But an even more important fact is that yes, today the community is global. When in 1976, Richard Dawkins wrote The Selfish Gene and the last chapter defined memes, which were the unit of the evolution of culture, he didn't mean silly images on the internet with captions. What he meant is, we should really be able to build a new science here. Memetic Engineering is what is fake news, and it is up to people like you and me who believe in the positive role of technology to show that we can actually have memetic engineering that benefits society and the markets. >> I mean, who'd have fake news is two things, the payload of fake news and actually the infrastructure gamification of what it did. I postulate that for, on one end of the spectrum is fake news, you could almost move to the other side of the spectrum and say, this good news. So clickbait equals fake news equals bad behavior, real bait, content, equals real news, real community. So there's a spectrum that you can almost say, we could actually weaponize content for good. >> Evolving our tool set in order to make sure that the wisdom of the crowds creates incredible investment and wealth creation opportunities for billions, not only for the gate keepers is what should be the regulators' best job, and they should be excited to have it rather than panicking. >> I want to ask you a question, philosophically. You mentioned tokens and governance, what we can vote for what people can vote with their coins and or some sort of consensus, gesture, or actually, real token transfer, as a way of voting. This actually, could solve the truth problem, because if you think about it, this is a new mechanism to understand sentiment within, whether it's a project or society, this new mechanism could be a source of truth, hence, but no centralized control, so you got the decentralization thing happening, but that's all predicated on going around a central authority, but the token dynamic, actually if you think about it, could be a token of truth, because statistically, it should work that way. Is that how you see it happening? And is that a directional correct statement? >> For too many years, we believed that Churchill's quip, democracy's the worst kind of government, except every other kind of government, was just a joke. He was giving us a challenge. And we were too weak to step up to that challenge and to design better governance mechanisms, better political instruments, and that is what is happening today. More and more people realize that they are freed up by technology where their relationship with the nation state that pretends to own them through citizenship and taxation can and will be renegotiated. >> I got to ask you a question. I love your logo, you've got a network graph up there that show the network society, implying that we're all connected, almost, you can argue, border-less nations, if you will. But I got to ask you, as that vision of a network society implies we're all connected, so we're all in one big tribe, although maybe, with different characteristics, but how do you see the future as we look at the current internet as almost a 30 year old stack, I mean, we're talkin' ancient relic by today's standards. So how do you see the stack evolving to match this criteria of a network society where the expectations of users and communities in society, whether it's government or groups are expecting new kinds of experiences, new kinds of outcomes? What in the stack is evolving? I mean, blockchain is one piece of it, but we're dealing with an old stack. I mean, it's old guard stuff, keep company's legacy. But the stack needs to be modernized. How does a stack modernize to intersect with your vision of a network society? >> Biological evolution has never been able to go meta. Our eyes are still so badly designed that the nerves bringing signals to our brain puncture the screen on which the images are projected. It's so stupid. We are able to understand when our designs are bad, and we are able to go deep, and actually rip out what has been the best way of going about certain things. This has happened in energy, where we are still in the process of electrifying a lot of things, many stoves are still gas stoves rather than electric as they should be. Or in transportation where we went from horses to cars and now we going to rapidly go to electric transportation. The internet is very young. It's just 30 years old, and the consumer space, just 50, 60 years old as a technology, but it must be fundamentally rebuilt and rethought. >> Yeah, it needs an engine change. It needs a tune up. >> What is dangerous is that there are very powerfully faulty memes being planted into the brains of too many people bringing desirable vulnerabilities in our infrastructure. And too few understand that those vulnerabilities caught everyone, whether they are friends, or real or pretend enemies. We have to build sustainable human civilization on a solid foundation. Nobody is served by maintaining those vulnerabilities that are still poking holes in vital infrastructure around us. >> Yeah, I mean, vital infrastructure and also the soft infrastructure, AKA the human psyche, AK memes in one tactic, to control the belief system and the narrative. But that's an attention driven mindset, so we're seeing that that fake news weaponizing content really prayed on the attention aspect of people where the reputation piece wasn't there. A lot of people now realizing that. How important is reputation in this new era of society, because there's something that's been challenging. We've seen every project, I mean, every project that I've seen, that I like, has an element of reputation in it. So there's a, because you have identity. Identity is super important. Attention, we know what does there. Get my attention. But the new discovery, the new navigation, the new progression to proficiency or value needs to be trusted. Reputation is an important part. Your reaction. >> Blockchain is making a lot of things measurable that were not before, and measuring them, it is able to assign value to them, and wherever there is value, new markets are being born. That is how incredible resources are now being poured in problems that were ignored for many, many years. And what is beautiful, is that blockchain is doing it open source. That is why new sustainable business models are evolving so fast. Back in the days, we would say an internet year is 3 months. I am now saying a blockchain year is 3 weeks. >> So that's fundamental, this value piece. That seems to be the equation that seems to be consistent. That's what you're saying, this value measurement seems to be a key metric and store, that's what the value is going to circulate around? Is that? >> So um, for the moment, our lives are bounded, limited. We have a given number of years to live, and more and more people realize that what they need to maximize is their benefit together with everybody else's benefit, because that is what makes human society valuable to its components and as a whole. So that kind of new outlook is being driven in the blockchain industry by people who don't necessarily need the second billion or the second million, but there are too many people who need to make ends meet, and it is just plain unacceptable that we let them live a life that does not fulfill their potential. >> This is a new opportunity to reimagine that equation. So I got to ask you, I love your work on social economic impact with blockchain, one of the things that we're observing in our reporting and analysis is, societal entrepreneurship is now emerging, what used to be a waterfall philanthropy exercise of NGO's and whatnot, fund something, stand up some servers, build a data center, uh, funding's over, project's over, start all over again. You're kind of chasing this tail. We're seeing real action with people who understand the businesses of nonprofits. We're turning that domain expertise into real, viable ventures. This is now an emerging trend, we're seeing certainly in Washington DC, where they have networks of people that they know, and now building on a tech stack is easier than it every was, so you're starting to see these real business opportunities getting funded and growing, that never would have gotten funding before, whether it's a, you know, an app for missing and exploited children, human trafficking, battered women, to water saving, water purification, all these things are now happening. What's your view on this, because this is kind of an unreported area around this entrepreneurship trend that things are getting to value faster? Do you see the same thing? >> If you ask the founder of the Ford Motor Company if he believed that damaging a community was a good business practice, he would have probably punched you, or at least laughed. Because today, those who feel that maximizing profit is a sacred duty of any capitalistic enterprise, even if it does include extracting and harming communities, employees, stakeholders, is extremely misguided. Positive impact is not counter to profit. They go hand in hand. >> Mission driven enterprises can exist. It's not just for the philanthropy. >> There is nothing else, but a sustainable business. In a long term an unsustainable business cannot be sustained. So if you want to build a business that lasts, you must build it sustainably, ecologically, socially, but of course, also in terms of it being profitable. And what is beautiful about the blockchain is that it completely decoupled the long term sustainability of a project from this silly decision. Should it be a for profit? Should it be a nonprofit? Who cares? What it should be is an inspiration for millions of people to align their creativity and passion with that project. And profits and sustainability will follow. >> And the funding's there and the opportunity time to value is shorter than ever before.
