But Mattia Baldassarre's here, founder and CEO of Epico Play. Welcome to the CUBE! >> Thank you, John >> So I love to have you on. I love the Italian accent. Get a little European going here. We're from Silicon valley, where you're in Italy. Great to have you on. So Epico Play, what is it? >> So Epico Play is an innovative startup with the aim to digitalize the sport industry, to support clubs, federation leagues, to move into the digital era. Right? So we build up a technology. It is, actually two heads. One is a kind of white label technology for, you know, small, bigger club and then a B2C platform api-play.com where you actually can open up your own engaging channel straight away and allow clubs to have a digital infrastructure, to engage directly with their community, to monetize it and to make together some let's say two way engagement experience. Because we are used today, to just, you know a communication usually by this brand that has one way. So I tell you something, here is something, you know we create something together between the brand that is a club and the community itself. So it's kind of our ability to lump these experiences. >> Yeah. So I saw something on YouTube a day and a half ago. Roma soccer team introduced a new player and the fans were going crazy. They had a little light show. He comes out with the Big Digital Bits logo on this jersey. I forgot who the player was. You know, it was a young player. >> Dybala. Paulo Dybala. >> Yes. And the fans packed the place. And I know he's got the sponsorship with Digital Bits. So Digital Bits is sponsoring that club, but then the underlying technology. Are you over the top? Are you building apps on top of digital bits? >> Yes. I mean, that's also one of the, you know touching point of our partnership. Digital Bits today we announce our partnership with them, with Digital Bits Foundation. They're going to become, you know, our blockchain partner. They will support us on offering the token service to clubs. And for sure, we are going to, we are aiming to create our own token for Epico Play Platform which will always be the substances of the Digital Bits blockchain. And a second step will be for sure optimizing the relationship of Digital Bits, you know, also around the world. >> Yeah. >> But on ourself already has, you know a big pipeline of clubs onboarding. And I was telling before in the in the Summit is not just, we don't want just the top clubs. Right? That's easy. They have money. We want to help, you know, smaller club to go into this new era. Otherwise they're going to lose a lot of audience. They're going to lose a lot of revenue. >> It's interesting Mattia. I was telling earlier guests we had on about the meta version, sports. Sports clubs have been savvy around data for a decade, over a decade, all the big clubs that have TV contracts, certainly. They know how to manage, use technology to manage the team. They have technology to manage the stadiums and they have technology to manage the fan experience which was normally ticketing and, you know, I got a beer, I go to my seat, get stuff delivered, get a shirt, you know spot pricing, being smart. >> Sure. >> So with data. So, okay. That's good. That's a nice foundation. Now with the digital side of things and NFTs you've got assets and you've got a whole other level of interaction on the assets, the player, the brand the fan who can be a player and a fan. And so like now the multiple dimensions of new use cases. >> Completely. It is I believe it is, is like the game A New Hero, you know? So the touching point are much more our, let's say the Gen-Z, you know, the teenager, like they need more, much more input during the week. You know, for our, for my generation going to the stadium was the most exciting thing. So we were waiting for Sunday to go to the stadium, right? Now, the kids, they have so much information that if you don't engage them through this kind of fun engagement during the week, they will play PlayStation, you know or play whatever gaming on Sunday instead of watching the live match. >> But so to get that example let's stay with that for a second. You use your personal experience. Because I felt the same way for sports. If they could reach you during the week you'd be engaging with them. >> Exactly. You collect more data. >> You were ready. >> Exactly, you collect more data and mostly you have a higher quality of the data itself because you see how they behave. You see what they like, not just on the offline pitch. Right? But you can track everything here. So it's a, I think the big step that we bringing also into, into sports >> You know, I did a talk over 15 years ago at MIT and I said, web one was about information. Web two is about connections. And web three is about relationships. Okay, not just who you, you know connected to with devices, relationships. And guess what? Community, NFTs, self-expression, engagement, and the engagement patterns are changing as well. You're talking about things that aren't around right now. >> Yeah, exactly. >> This is new, new benefits. >> It's a new benefit, completely >> New benefits of everybody >> Completely for everybody. And especially, you know, actions that clubs need to do if they want to evolve, you know, that's I think really crucial for them. >> Great. You're building on Digital Bits. Where are you with the company? Talk about the origination story. How did it get started? Did you wake up one day and the apple fell on your head and you said, well, what happened? What's going on? >> So the story is this one, I worked in media, into sport media industry with a big group in London for a long time. And then I was also the CEO of a sport, OTT broadcaster. It is international, but I was taking care of Italy. While I was getting along with clubs, federation leagues, I said, there is a missing here. Right? They still not consider this as a main aspect. They always scared of investment or investing money in this. Right? So that's why we say, okay, you know what when I quit my job, we say, okay, I want, I'm going to... >> You just quit your job. Say I'm going to quit. >> Okay, no, I finished the season. Then I say, okay, done. Now I'm, I'm already thinking about what's going on. And then I open Epico Play. We also, with these mission say, okay there is an opportunity. There is a need in the market. And again, John, I'm not talking about just the top three teams of each league. I'm talking about all the teams. >> All the teams. >> All the teams, professional clubs, being basketball and volleyball. You know, all the sports need these changes. >> Yeah, some are bigger than others, but it's the power law. They all have communities. >> But if you aggregate all the small and medium teams, you know, right, You reach 1.5 billion fans. Right. So huge amount of data. And again, with our technology, we are able to give this environment without an investment from the club. So they are more open. They feel more like comfortable. And we are going to make money together with that. >> And they contribute the assets. So they're partner. >> Yeah. We are completely partner. So we build ecosystem, we then, for them and we make money together. >> It's a joint venture kind of, not formally but it's a win-win. >> It's a win. >> Not a lot of money out of pocket. They put a little bit probably to integrate in, but not big numbers. >> Not a lot of impact on the cash flow because in their mind is still for sure. The pitch, not the field is the most important thing. >> Yes. >> So that's why, okay, then we will help them. Okay. Don't worry. >> It's all upside for them. Do they have a rev share on things too? >> Yes. Exactly. >> So they do a business deal on their side? >> Yes >> So they're happy. They have the option for the future and... >> We build up everything for the future. Then we keep starting and keep monetizing together. So into different ways. >> So can you get some good tickets when the CUBE is in town? >> Whenever you want John. (laughs) >> Of course. What's next for you? Take us through your fundraising. You're building your team. Take a minute to put a plug in for your company. >> We actually, at the end, like seen around 1.2 million. Between, you know, an investment group that we're working with. This other venue, you know, one big TECHO company and some angel, strategic angel investor. Now we are also closing another bridge round to go then in 2023 to make a big round, you know, and scale internationally. So already, now we are approaching five to seven countries new countries, especially, you know, also going to South America where there is a massive adoption of this kind of opportunity, especially in terms of data. Then straight after we're going to, you know, make this fundraising and expand our business. Be really aggressive. As I told you before on the fact that, okay you know what we do the investment. Just let's build us your ecosystem together. >> Yes. >> And then we see, you know can be a different element between eventually other competitors will come out after. >> Okay. Great venture. Can you tell us more about it? >> Yes. Uh so so techo in three d mobile application, which has a minute reality and as connected to the hardware which has dedicated for the behavioral change of people for so that they can become more conscious and like a friendly. >> And can you tell us more about how it works? Yes, >> of course there is. Luba, who can explain this? Okay. S >> o r application is about an astronaut who needs to save the planet. S O Firstly is there is a game in which a person needs to save your hair. Virtual airs by selling some ecological problems in it so that he or she wrote, be educated to both real life scenarios. Actually, there were before some eco trash boxes in our school because like the thing off, ecological problems and recycling is one of the most talked about topics in Kazakhstan nowadays. And like in our school, the students try. Thio make this echo charge boxes, but they were always empty because students wasn't incent ified to recycle the garbage. And we tested our up in our school and we already launched it in our school and this ups incentivize our students. And now this I could trash boxes with our hard way always full. So >> that's awesome. See, you already found some success with your app. Thank you. Do you think that that this is a problem in the bigger community. >> Oh, maybe Donna Comptel. >> So we're saying that we started locally, but we got to go globally within that, uh, a pollution, like a pollution global problem and we trying to solve all over the world. So in our game, we have the whole world that you become an astronaut. So you should be aware for hold the problem that was happening in the earth. So we are trying to engage and educate people to be more global on to be more responsible for our final for our home. >> It sounds like everyone in the world should download that app. Yes, I do hope Thio uh, expand if you get the funding. >> Yes, um, we plan to expand not only in our country, Kazakhstan on only locally, but also globally. And we would like to create the eco friendly community across Central Asia since we want to make sure that consciousness is global in our area. >> And what struggles have you faced trying to create this app? >> Um, probably there were some struggles and off course in the realization and, uh, the realization of technical part of this project and creating a business model, since we are not very experienced in this kind of things. But since we have participated in techno vacation and we were immersed in this protest and were modified Thio motivated. Yeah, and we're motivated to learn all this things and acquire those skills. And this is why we became more experienced in this stuff. So right now, uh, those struggles that we face before not longer problem for us. So yeah, this what we faced? >> So techno vacation has definitely helped. Do you improve your app and yes, right houses. Tech innovation Helped you? >> Yeah, Um, probably someone else wants to ask you this question. >> How is SECNAV ation help? You were What skills have you learned from this journey? For >> example, one of the most important skills, I guess iss a teamwork. Like after we started to work on the one project, we started to listen each other excavation actually helped us too. Um, I understand the opinions off other people and like to understand the problems in our society. We start to dream bigger to think bigger, wider kind of that >> That's amazing. And also take Novation helping us >> to explore new companies to be more like open a person to come to The company's asked about the help on not like B just like see the problems and trying to solve trying to find a solution and be the people of the world and be responsible for our planet for what's happening in our local community on be aware of everything. >> And, um So I heard you guys had an amazing week. Um, you you went to whoever You went some other places. So can you tell us more about your week >> you want? So we went to amazing places in a Silicon Valley in a San Francisco San Jose and we so, like it'd, for example, Golden Gate Bridge. And also the Alcatraz so were so impressed by their architecture by the people by the nature on DDE. We just expected a lot of Onda. We just got this old expectations come to the reality on dhe. We hope that that kind of dream will come true in our future, and we gonna to work in a one of the big companies that were located here. I know all the universities. So >> how is it like going to the different tech companies and seeing it in real life. >> So we >> visited Uber Company and Google Ventures, and both we I have seen people who work is there, and we're really impressive on. And we really like it. It? Yeah. And, uh, I think so. Before, like in my childhood, I dreaming to be to be in Silicon Valley, to goes there and, like, meet people who are work already working you And now, like my dream came through. >> That's awesome. (techno music) >> Hello everyone, welcome to our special on the ground presentations, The Cube coverage in Washington, D.C. I'm John Furrier, the co-founder of SiliconANGEL, the host of the Cube. We are getting all the stories on what's happening with the innovation and entrepenuership in our societal nonprofits and/or innovation in government. We hear Peter Prix is the OneRelief app founder, onereliefapp.com, OneRelief is your venture. You're part of the PeaceTech Accelerator. We're here at the United States Peace Institute in D.C. Tell us about your opportunity. >> Great pleasure. Yes, my name is Peter, CEO and founder of OneRelief, the OneRelief app. What we do is let people like you and me make quick donations, micro donations to disaster relief aid. So after emergency has struck, Hurricane Maria, last year in September, approaching the Caribbean Islands. We all knew about it, we all saw those pictures on TV. And we all felt empathy and wanted to help and wanted to gift, but there's no easy way. So what we do with the OneRelief web app is we let people like you and me easily, with the click of a button, make quick donations that supports certified disaster relief agencies on the ground. >> And you guys are a start up here at the PeaceTech Accelerator. >> Exactly, we're a startup here at the PeaceTech Accelerator. >> Great, well I'm really bullish and I think crowdsourcing has opened up the democratization of giving, which has been phenomenal. But there's some scale issues, now there's ten zillion apps, certainly GoFundMe, we know about those things. They're kind of peer-to-peer. You know, friend has to socialize with that but you know, a lot of folks are wondering, hey, if I donate to that Haiti situation, or hurricane, where does the money go? We heard in Puerto Rico, half the stuff didn't even get there. This is a big fear, cognitive dissonance from the giver. Do you guys solve that problem? >> Yes, so absolutely. When it comes to giving at the moment you can choose between giving to the big players, the big charities that we don't trust, as we know. Or you can go on a platform like GoFundMe and there's actually 12,000 fundraisers for Hurricane Maria. And you don't know who to trust either. So what we do in OneRelief is we provide a marketplace, a platform that is certifying charities with confirmed people on the ground. And when you make a donation through the platform you actually get an update. You get a status notification, help has been embarked, help has arrived in a community. You get visuals, you get video of what's happening on the ground. And you get feedback at the end of the disaster of what has actually been achieved with the money you've donated. >> So you close in the loop from the giver, from the journey of the money to the destination, and seeing the impact of it. >> Absolutely. From the second you press the donate button and you donate and you share a fundraiser, you can see how the money is getting to the country, how the money's being used, what it's being used for, and what the progress of that is, providing you information on the impact of your donation and closing the loop and encouraging you the next time another disaster happens to donate again. >> Create some reliability. You're essentially verifying the end points of where the cash goes. >> Peter: Absolutely. >> How's it going? How far along are you guys? Sounds like a great idea, I think it's an awesome idea. Getting a little dashboard, seeing the impact, make people feel good, know their money's going to work. How do you get this off the ground? You're in the Accelerator, what's the status? >> Absolutely, we're about three weeks away from the launch of the platform, it will be launched on March 1st, so we are in the final push of getting the app off the ground. We have partners, we have contracts signed with, for example, Action Against Hunger, where agencies that have country offices that have been working in the countries that are very often struck by crises for many many years. So it's not that their money goes to a small charity that we've never heard of and are not able to get any accountability information, but it's going to certified agencies that have people on the ground. >> And they're excited by this, it sounds like. >> Oh they are more than excited. It's changing the entire industry. It's rather than the rich people signing big checks it's people like you and me small donations that have an impact of changing the world. And what the OneRelief app is really special and good at it's the speed at what this happens. So, a disaster strikes, within hours, the fundraiser's online on social media and people can donate. >> And one of the great things about us covering Gov Cloud, we've observed that bringing a modern stack like cloud you can actually radically transform these industries that have technology going in some cases so antiquated they don't know what's running on. >> Oh no, absolutely. So, the platform itself is running on AWS and we use serverless cloud technology that allows us to really scale the platform, whether a thousand people donate or a million people donate at the same time it's running on a serverless cloud. >> So you're providing critical infrastructure services for donations , big or small? >> Absolutely, and it's 100% scalable, which wasn't able a few years ago. >> How is the accelerator helping you, PeaceTech? >> Yeah, a really interesting question in multiple ways, both through mentoring support that we get through the partners that bring incredible support and help us really in getting the platform off the ground. AWS helps helps us with setting it up on lambda, that's wonderful. We have C5 who gives us some really interesting support in how we can operate this as a nonprofit with a tech startup mechanism. Really kind of look at this, not just as a philanthropy opportunity, real change. But what's interesting to us us we've reported on SiliconANGLE is the societal entrepreneurship market is booming in D.C. Can you comment about what it's like here? I mean, is that right? Obviously Silicon Valley where we live you get a lot of the tech alpha tech guys out there. But here it's like non-profits. What old ways of doing things are now kind of becoming more entrepreneurial because of cloud? What's your reaction to that? >> No, absolutely, I think Washington, D.C. Is the best place for us to be at. It's a mix of government, non-profits, and foundations that come in. There's a lot of, actually a lot of young startups coming up, impact startups. There's lots of coworking spaces. And we can really feel it. This is the most conducive environment for us as a startup to grow and to thrive getting support from partners that we need. >> Societal entrepreneurship as a category, I mean, I don't even know if that's the name of it, what do you call it, is booming. Can you share any anecdotes, is it booming, is it just emerging? What's your thoughts? >> Societal entrepreneurship. Yes, what the OneRelief platform really does, it allows everyone to give. It is enabling every citizen in the world to make a quick donation an amount that every one of us can afford. >> Final question, what's your core challenges as you get through the accelerator, look to go to market, is it the partnerships, is it the tech? What are your core challenges? >> I think it's really clearly communicating how OneRelief is different and how it is not like all the other platforms out there, how we are the one stop shop in a marketplace that is connecting people who want to do good with receiving charities on the ground. >> How do you compare and contrast to say these other crowdsourcing and crowdfunding platforms? >> Yes, on the one hand there's the big players, the big charities that we don't trust, that we want to give directly to because we don't know what happens with the money. And there's peer-to-peer fundraising that we don't trust either because they're tiny and we don't know who's setting up those fundraisers. We are right in between. We are a platform that is connecting the donor with a certified charity. >> How about emerging technologies like blockchain which has been very popular in supply chain-like things, because you're basically an end-to-end supply chain of money moving to the end point, the relief or whatever. >> Peter: Yeah! >> Good use of blockchain? No? Are you thinking about that? >> Oh no, absolutely. We actually have an innovation lab that is only purely looking at blockchain from different angles. One of them is for us to accept crypto donations and to be the first platform on the market that is accepting micro donations in cryptocurrency. And secondly, we are looking at blockchain technology and running a hyperledger project at the moment to see how we can accelerate the speed at how long it takes to get the donation from when a person makes it into the receiving bank account on the ground in country xyz in the world. >> A whole new infrastructure wave is coming, you're seeing it decentralize applications and hardened end-to-end apps like you guys. >> Yeah, no, absolutely. >> Well, congratulations Peter.
