It aws Imagine. Edie you. It's a brand new show. Actually, this is the second year were here last year to really is part of public sector on Really addressing education and education is K through 12. It's higher education. It's community college. It's that and so much border. We're really excited to have our next guest. The company's been in the space for a long time, are really driving a lot of digital transformation internally as well as with their customers. And we have Andrew Gilfillan. He is the VP of product management for Pearson. Andrew, great to see you. >> Great to be here. Thanks for having me. >> All right. So give us the kind of quick over on Pearson for people who aren't familiar with the country. >> S O Pearson's a global education company operating in 70 countries around the world. And our mission is really to help people progress their lives through learning. >> Now things are changing up. Change it up a little bit. You're here he had a big announcement earlier today during the keynote Yes, about a new product called Rebel Pearson Rebel Pearson Rebels been around for a little while, so give us the background and what's changed now, >> right? So Rebel first launched in 2014. So it's now been around for a little more than five years on. And really, it's at the forefront of our transformation to digital course materials. Revels intended. Thio replaced the traditional tax book and give students the opportunity to have a fully digital interactive learning experience where they can read practice, study anywhere, >> anytime. So it's basically an app that integrates all the different types of material that they're going to use in their kind of day to day. In the actual engagement with that class. >> Eso it incorporates all of their course materials, so their readings, their assignments, they can access it through their computer or through mobile app, which is which is great because it enables them to learn anywhere. We know that students are on the go lots of priorities they're squeezing in their course, you know, their course work while there juggling jobs, families, activity is everything else. So it's pretty >> interesting because you talk about it being pretty mobile, heavy, mobile centric because that's one of the big attributes of mobile. Right? We check our phones were in line at the grocery store and you get a couple of minutes here in a couple minutes here, as opposed to when used to sit down at the computer. And I've kind of dedicated attention span. So you're seeing that on the education side with the kids in the way they actually engage with their with their curricula? >> Absolutely. I mean, we have to meet students where they are way have to bring learning to them so they can learn on their terms >> and is a workout. I mean, old school people like me, like Come on, you guys, let's sit down and concentrate for 20 minutes. 30 minutes on a particular topic. Yeah, it works for >> that. It does. And actually, what we know from research is that students actually learn better. When material is broken down into smaller chunks, the rebel is able to break the material down into smaller pieces. I'm really optimize the learning, provide immediate feedback for them, and soon can kind of stop pick up where they left off later down the road. You know, if they were studying during a break at their job right now and they're gonna pick back up when they get home, they can do that. >> Interesting. Okay, So that what is the Lexx? I have to do this. What's the opportunity? How did this come about in the first place? And then you guys do >> s so we're super excited to be able to partner with Amazon again. Our goal is Thio really make learning more engaging and more convenient for more learners. And the partnership with Amazon to bring the rebel skill for Alexa is another step in that direction. Eso, Alexa really enable students too engaged in their learning on their own terms. We had one student who tested the skill for us while it was in development who was juggling a family taking a full course load and had a full time job. And she used Alexa toe listen to her reading while she was preparing meals for her, for her family on it was a great way to really show that Alexa made possible her to fit her course. Bergin, when she had time to do it. >> So it's really just connecting her Alexa device at home in tow. Her her her revel account. >> Yeah, So the link your rebel account with your with your Alexa with your Amazon Alexa a count, and it allows you to stay up to date on when your assignments or do it allows. You listen to the tax. You can change devices and pick up where you left off on a new device >> in a different location at a different time. So how many different kind of actions will do >> so their number of commands? It's really focused on audio playback on understanding when your assignments are due being able to play sort of, you know what, you what the current assignment is or to know when the next assignment is due. Right? So it's still really focused on sort of the key activities that a student's gonna participate in when they're engaging with their with their rebel product. >> Okay, And do you see just isn't open up your product manager, you know, kind of a whole new host of of potential capabilities. Using voice is an interface versus >> yeah, eso eso I mean, we know that students air mobile. We know that the sort of current generation of students what we call the eye Jen's grew up in a world where Internets always been a thing. And so we really want to take advantage of all of the tools that are out there to deliver more engaging experiences, right, and and to really be able to reach Maur learners in really positive ways, >> right? And then who's your customer? Your customer usually like the school, the school entity, >> So that's a great question. Eso Historically, our customer really was The student is the end user. The educator ultimately chose what, uh, what they used or what they expected this student to use. Increasingly, Pierson's transforming and really looking at institutions as customers as well. And so we have tears of customers. It's It's the institution. It's Theo educator, and it's the student, and we have to meet the needs of all three of those things. One of the great things about Revel is not only do we believe that it drives better outcomes for the student, but it allows us to deliver a better product at a more affordable price, >> right? Do you find that the engagement with the application because it still basically the same application under the cover significantly is significantly different with a voice interaction around. If you have enough data yet, yeah, I think I >> think it's too early to tell. I mean, certainly were optimistic about the promise of voice being a part of the experience. It's not going to be the whole experience but will be an important part of the experience. And it will really enable more flexibility for students to use the tool in a variety of ways. >> It's just interesting to me with the whole voice thing that you get e mails old people like us get e mails telling you what you should ask your voice. You should ask Alexei, Have you thought about asking like something more than just turn on the radio with the weather? It's only a joke, >> you know, it's it's amazing. I think when you watch students interact with these tools, it's so natural and so intuitive for them. They've grown up with mobile devices. They've grown up with the Internet, they've grown up sort of with a new paradigm, and they expect that they're learning experiences, air gonna adapt in those ways and in sort of the ways that they're adopting, >> right? So last question. Here we're here. It it Just imagine, obviously, Theresa's super passionate about this area. Andrews super passionate about this area. What's it meant for you guys? How's Amazon been? Our AWS is a partner, you know, still kind of early days for them in this type of area. But clearly there's a lot of resource is being put behind. >> Yes, eso Amazon has been a great partner and Alexa the rebel skill for Alexis, sort of our new launch. But we've partnered with Amazon. Andi used Amazon Web service is underpinning Ah, lot of a lot of our product experiences, including Revel So they've been a great partner. And I think this is an example of just extending that one more step. And we look forward to be ableto, you know, look even further to see how we can work together to improve learning for students. >> I love a 200 year old company using voice. That's right. You're watching the Cube, the leader in live-tech coverage. My name is Dave Vellante and I'm here with my co-host, David Floyer. Good to see you again David. VMWorld day three, wall to wall coverage. We got sets going on. 94 guests. Patrick Osborne is here, he's the Vice President of Big Data and Secondary Storage at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Patrick, it's great to see you again. >> Always a pleasure to be on the Cube. >> Big quarter, Antonio Neri early into his tenure. >> Yes. The earnings, raise guidance, great to see that. Got to feel good. Give us the update, VMworld 2018, what's happening with you guys? >> So Q3 was bang up quarter, for all segments of the business. It was great, you know. Obviously it's the kind of earnings you want to have from a CEO in a second quarter. Steering the ship here. I think everyone's jazzed up. He's brought a lot of new life to the company, in terms of technology leadership. He's someone who's certainly grown up, from the grounds up, starting off his career at HPE. So for us who have started off as a Product Manager, an individual contributor, making your way up to CEO is definitely possible. So that's been great and I think it's favorable micro economics and we're taking advantage of that. VMworld's been awesome. I think this whole story around Multicloud and obviously we talk about hybrid IT at HPE, so it fits very well. VMware Technology, partner of the year, again. Four years running, so it's been a really good show for us. >> As last year, data protection is the single, hottest topic. Data protection, obviously Cloud, The Edge, but The Edge is kind of new and it's hot, it's sexy. But in terms of actual business that's getting done, companies that are getting funded, companies getting huge raises, throwing big parties. We saw you back to back nights at Omnia, it's a lot happening in data protection. HPE has got a whole new strategy around data protection. Maybe talk about that a little bit and how it's going. >> So it's going really well, like you said, that part of the market, it's pretty hot right now. I think there's a couple of things playing into that, certainly this new style of IT, like applied to secondary storage. We saw that with primary storage the last few years. Multicloud, the move to all flash, low-latency workloads. And then, certainly a lot of the things, in that area, are disrupting secondary storage. People want to do it different ways, they want to be able to simplify this area. It's a growing area for data, in general. They want to make that data work for them. Test, Dev, workload placement, intelligent placement of data, for secondary and even tertiary storage in the cloud. So a lot of good things happening, from an HPE perspective. >> So not just back up? >> No, not just back up. >> I want more out of my insurance policy. >> Exactly. Something in the past that was moving from purely a TCO type of conversation. My examples are always like, who likes to pay their life insurance premium, right? Because at the end of the day, I'm not going to derive any utility from that payment. So now, it's moving into more ROI. So we have things like, the Hybrid Flash Array, from Nimble, for example. It allows you to put your workloads to work. We have a great cloud service, called HPE Cloud Volumes, that we use for our customers to be able to do intelligent DR, as a service, and be able to apply Cloud compute to your data. So there's a lot of things going on, in the space, that's just outside of your traditional move data from point A to point B. Now you want to make it work for you. >> And what about the big data portfolio? You hear a lot about data. You don't hear a ton about the Big Data, Hadoop piece of the world. I know Hadoop, nobody seems to be talking about that anymore. But everybody's talking about AI, Machine-Learning, Deep-Learning. Certainly The Edge is all about data. What's the Big Data story? >> So at HPE, we're definitely focused on the whole Edge to Core analytic story. So we have a great story and you can see in the numbers from Q3, The Edge business, The Edge line servers, Aruba, driving a lot of growth in the company, where a lot of that data is being created. And then back into the Core, so for Big Data, we see a number of customers, who are using these tools to affect digital transformation. They're doing it, we're doing it to ourselves. So they're moving from batch oriented, to now fast data, so streaming analytics. And then, incorporating concepts of AI and ML to provide better service or better experience for their customers. And we're doing that with, for example, InfoSight. So we have a great product, Nimble, 3PAR. And then we provide a service, on top of that, which is a SAS based service. It has predictive analytics and Machine Learning. And we're able to do that, by using Big Data analytics. >> You're offering that as a service, as a SAS service to your customers? >> Absolutely. And the way we're able to provide those predictive analytics and be able to provide those recommendations and that Machine-Learning across a entire portfolio and be able to scale that service, because it's a service, we got tens of thousands of users using the service on a daily basis, is moving from an ERP system, data warehouse, to batch analytics, to now we're doing Elasticsearch and Kafka and all these really cool techniques, so it's really helped us unlock a lot of value for our customers. >> So, the Nimble acquisision is interesting, it's bringing that sort of Machine-Learning and AI to infrastructure. You got a lot of automation in the portfolio and you can't really talk about Cloud without talking about automations. So talk a little about automation. >> In particular, even at the show here this week, we are a premier technology partner with VMware and I think more that you see in the VMware Ecosystem is all around Cloud and automation. That's really where they're going. And we've been day-zero partners on a lot of different fronts. So VMware Cloud Foundation integration, we do things on the storage level with Vvols and SRM and all these things that allow customers to essentially program that infrastucture and get out of the mundane tasks of having to do this manually. So for us, automation is key part of our story here. Especially with VMware. >> So going a little bit further with that, what sort of examples, what benefit is this to your customers? How are they justifying putting all this in? >> It's a hybrid world, so our customers are going to expect, from us, as a portfolio vendor, the ability to provide an automated solution, on premises, as automated as what you'd get in the cloud. So for us, the ability to have a sourcing experience, that we call GreenLake, so you can buy everything from us, from a solution perspective, in a pay-as-you-go elastic model where you can flex-up, flex-down. And then being able to, essentially provide a different view, depending on what persona you're coming from. Obviously we've been focused on the infrastructure persona, more often, we're getting into the DevOps persona, the Cloud engineer persona, providing all of our infrastructure, whether it's computer networking or storage, that plugs into all these frameworks. Whether it's Ansible, Chef and all these things that we do around our automation ecosystem, it's pretty ubiquitous. >> You're touching on all the Cloud basis and you're seeing a lot of discussion around that. What are you hearing from customers? Sometimes we have to squint through this, a lot of the guys here, we always like to say, move at the speed of the CIO, which sometimes is slow. At the same time, they're all afraid they're going to get disrupted. HPE, over the last two or three years, has really brought in and partnered with some of the guys your talking about. Whether it's containers and companies that do those types of offerings. How fast do the customers actually adopting, where they adopting them, how are they handling, you talked about a hybrid world; How are they bridging the old and the new? >> That's a great question. For a lot of our customers, it's always a brown field conversation. You do have these mission critical workloads that have to run, so there's no Edge to Core without your core ERP system, right? Your Core Oracle System or for smaller customers that are running their businesses on SQL and other things. But what we're seeing is that, by shoring up that Core and we provide a set of services and products that we feel are the best in the industry for that. And then allow them to provide adjacent services on top of that, it's exactly like the same example we had with InfoSight, where those systems use to call home, right now we're taking that data, we're providing a whole ancillary set of services and functions around it and our customers are doing that. Enormous customers, like British Telecom, folks like Wayfair, for example, they're doing this on premises and their disrupting their competitors, in the mean time. >> What do you make of some of the announcements we've heard this week? Obviously VMware making a big deal with what's going on with AWS. We're seeing AWS capitulate, David Floyer you made the call. Got to have an on-prem strategy. Many said no, that'll never happen. They just want to sweep the floor. So that's a tip to the hybrid cap. What are your thoughts on what's going on there? How does HPE sort of participate in those trends? >> I'd say it's, instead of battle and capitulate, we've been very laser-focused on the customers and helping them, along their way, on the journey. So you see a lot of acquisitions we've done around services, advisory service. CTP is a perfect example. So CTP has a whole cadre of experts who understand AGER, who understand ECS and all the services and functions that go along with them And we're able to help people, right size, right place, whatever you want to call it, within their infrastructure. Because we know, we've been in business for 75+ years and have a very loyal customer base, and we're going to help them along their maturity curve and certainly everyone's not on the same path, in the same race. It's been pretty successful so far. >> You guys tend to connect the dots between your HPE Discover in U.S., in Las Vegas and HPE Discover in December. So June to December, you're on these six month cycles, U.S. focus and Europe focus, Decembers in Madrid, again. Second year of Madrid. U.S. is always Vegas, like most of these conferences, what's the cadence that your on? What was the vibe like at Discover? What should we expect leading up to Q4, calendar Q4 in Madrid? >> I'd say that Discover was a big success in Vegas, always fun to spend time here. In Madrid, you'll see a focus around the value part of our business. So we've been growing in automation, we talked about hybrid IT, certainly the Core around storage. We're really focusing and very heavily invested in, not just storage, but intelligent data management. So we really feel that our offerings, especially doubling down and offering more services around InfoSight and some of those predictive and Cloud-ready user stories for our customers is something that definitely differentiates ourselves in the market. So we'll be very focused on the data plan, the data layer and helping customers transform in that area. >> So let's talk some tenor sax. >> (David laughs) >> This is not New Orleans. When we were down in New Orleans, we were at VeeamON, I think you had your sax with you, you jumped in. >> That's right, I played with the Soul Rebels. >> Playing with the Soul Rebels, you were awesome. Leonard, a big jazz man. Love it. I'm a huge TOP fan. What's new in that world? Are you still active? Are you still playing? >> Yeah, the band's still playing. Shout out to my buddies in Jolpe, sitting in with some friends at a Dead cover band coming up, in a couple weeks. So, should be fun. We're going to reenact The Grateful Dead and Branford Marsalis. >> That's wonderful. >> It should be fun. >> We've been getting a big dose of hip-hop this week. >> Yeah. But the new thing is that, in hip-hop, it's getting back to it's original roots, so a lot of folks in the jazz world, collaborating with the folks in the hip-hop world, so not very commercial, definitely underground, but pretty cool. >> I love it. That's right Leonard, you pointing out Miles Davis was one of the first to make that transformation. >> Yeah >> Good call. >> I'm going to get the numbers wrong, but it's about five percent technique and 95 percent attitude. (multiple laughs) >> Jazz, like hip-hop, there's a lot guys just doing their own thing. And somehow it all comes together. >> Absolutely. >> Okay Patrick, great to see you. >> Great to see you guys. live from las vegas it's the cube covering knowledge 60 brought to you by service now here your host dave vellante and Jeff Frick we're back Jeff Frick and I are pleased to be wrapping up day one for us for the cube at knowledge 16s a plastic piece no service house big events been a long day okay farriers texted me from SA and looks like they had a good event down there as well but but we're here at knowledge 16 great day financial analyst meeting yesterday set up the cube had a great kick off today at the the keynotes with Frank's luqman and and company laying out their vision she said robert gates on as a rock star right i saw him at the cio event so service now has a separate cio event within the event and they bring in a lot of speakers and they share you know it's behind closed doors CIOs talking to other CIOs pretty impressive was great walking over with him ten minutes he came on now remember he replaced rumsfeld all right george w bush brought him in asking him to replace rumsfeld it was like it would be like Belichick replacing Parcells right Rumsfeld effusive outgoing controversial hey and then and then and then of course belcheck you know very straight narrow and and that's kind of way Gates is right i mean he was very measured and in yet opinionated met serving eight presidents all of all of which had great sense of humor except to he said right jimmy carter and and richard nixon yeah dark days then take take what you will from that he's head so pretty interesting but so what's your take on day one at knowledge you know kind of following up on some of the stuff that dr. gates talked about it the themes are actually really simple you know and he listed the traits of leadership you know these are not things that you never heard before carrying it with the trust humor and I think the themes here at as service now are very similar Dave and that it's it's about work it's not about records it's you know for time and time again about it's about effective response not necessarily you know building the biggest mode in the security in the security aspect and you know it's the action platformer we get work done so it just seems like this kind of methodical just boom boom boom stick another knitting moving down the road moving down the field as we like to say and continuing just to execute and as they see everything as a service that now that opens up this huge opportunity to go well beyond itsm which is you know consistent with the vision and I don't keep talking about that 2013 interview with rebels our first meeting with him you know to execute on that vision of a platform and now going into shared services which we've heard a lot about you know a little bit into HR a little bit into legal and continuing to move down that path where you know this seems like a good opportunity for a head but they're just executing just keep executing well and I Tom now is the big opportunity facing them and I think it's going to provide a Mick shift to to a new set of products for service now IT operations management they've made some acquisitions they are a service management is now it's got its tentacles everywhere and I mean essentially helping orchestrate chef and puppet if you want they could do the orchestration for you so cloud management is a new area for these guys than this whole notion of inter clouding and managing multiple disparate clouds is something that service now can help attack I mean it's pick a problem that involves a service workflow and service now is going to knock it down how many things in business involve a service workflow it's like everything everything we do everything we touch has a service workflow aspect to it so every project every new initiative every acquisition it's just you know the market opportunities enormous and what service now has done a really good job of doing is taking this little notion of a like the Big Bang IT Service Management he'll help desk changed man and problem management change management etc and exploded that in all different directions into new vectors you mentioned a little bit in hrs I think it's increasingly getting traction in HR legal logistics you're now seeing service now lay out a vision of touching and helping to essentially orchestrate request service requests around the ERP systems around the CRM systems which are systems of record and relatively rigid systems of record right and service now can help orchestrate all the activities around that it's an enormous opportunity so the TAM I pegged the tam in 2014 I wrote an article that John furrier II published on Forbes I pegged the tam at 30 billion at that time and remember when I went through the analysis David floor you help me at ease you know it just feels like it could even be higher and I remember discussing that with David said yeah but 30 billion so huge already and they get this tiny little company and you're on thin ice we better be conservative here and now it's up to 60 billion i think the 60 billion is is understated Jeff well Darryl from from H&R Block in Canada you know they do this annual thing I left I called it a merger acquisition at a divestiture to build the infrastructure to execute the annual tax process for Canada 84,000 tasks everything from painting the building to signage to computers to paper to hiring people firing people i mean how does a lot of different tasks that they now manage with service now I thought that was pretty a fascinating story you were not when we had Lawrence on from from from ey not understand young anymore ey and talked about now they can provide a level of detail in the IT FM the financial management is like what's the cost of an application that no one ever knew before because they never added in the data center cost you know this is just software and maintenance and now people can start making interesting informed decisions about end-of-life enough which has come up in a number of our conversation so that people are turning off other applications and and service now is taking that workload the other thing I wanted to talk about we talked about this at the open but when you and I walked the floor at 22 the ServiceNow 2013 it was struck us that one of the challenges they had is to evolve this ecosystem and in that but by the way they they still have that challenge but they've done a really good job and you've seen one of the things we said is where the real big guys KPMG was here but you know the the Accenture of the world the youngs at the time now they are going all-in so accenture acquires cloud sherpas CSC acquires fruition so those guys like to focus on big opportunities so the only area now the other thing we talked about when we were at the Aria was the down market opportunity you know we said boy wouldn't it be nice if they had a solution for small companies take a put in a page out of the the Salesforce playbook and they've announced offerings there you're not hearing anything about them you know because and I think the reason is at least in part there's so much opportunity in the global 2000 they're really laser focused on that piece we got to do some more digging and find out what's going on there I know initially there was some concerns about sort of the the growth path and but we haven't heard a peep unless I missed it about the down market product the entry-level product guys the guys like us right you know he'd use it I don't know if I have 84,000 tasks to put the cube production together but i could not the few that i was not to have an automated in this system absolutely yeah so and then the other thing Dave which which you know we ettore on talking about the design and and the the watch and the fact that he sits in a room he had a surf shop in the Maldives before he came to work for service now for a couple years and he sits with Fred and so again just this unique culture of having kind of the mad scientist you know elder coder with the the fellow surf shop design guy and to come together and to try things and to come up with the watch and told the story the watch and I had to build credibility over years to try new things to get to the point where you could say hey let's let's talk about the what let's do a watch and is a form factor of the wash and what are the types of notifications and work behavior that we can better represent represent in this form factor and I think it's just you just cannot underestimate the strength of having you know a driven visionary leader that pulls people to him and inspires people which he so clearly does well and he's young at heart I mean a sec i would say i think he was coding in the keynotes today i got we gotta ask him but he comes on you know but they you know you look at this company and there's some folks at this company that been around for a while you know it's not a bunch of kids you know co diem there are right but a lot of the senior leadership team and the technical team the development team have been around the block right this is not their first rodeo and yet they're able to focus on simplicity you know Fred used to talk about the Amazon experience lat you know last year I think it was the uber experience I think I know we're gonna see some more stuff on on Wednesday though the watch still as we scratching my head a little bit but look low when did the Apple watch come out right i mean window if you look at apple's kind of the people at stamp you know this is now kind of a valid new technical assed year right austrian they're already kind of thinking of new ways to use this fourth basket right well so one of the guests said today you know things change so quickly now you know we it's true we used to go to these conferences and you'd be talking about the same cloud narrative two years straight hey right now it's like every six months it's something new every three months it's something new you know whether it's you know the way i OT just exploded on the scene you know hadoop which was so hot now the dupes like passe you know everybody's talking about you know spark and you know other new real-time methods and streaming and and it's just amazing to see the pace of innovation and so servers now seems to be a company that can keep up with that the other thing is i'd look at my notes on is back to your comment about the system integrators you know we had center and see you see both talking about them getting out of the plumbing business and really moving more of their efforts with their clients to the high-value stuff and you think wow that's kind of counterproductive they've made a lot of money on I'm doing heavy lifting infrastructure implementations and integration and all that big nasty stuff even they see the writing on the wall it's better to get behind this transformation the cult of the rotation to the new and to build their practice around helping their customers execute in a cloud enable the world versus necessarily continuing to stitch together infrastructure well I mean I think that's it's important I mean the hallmark of a great company is one that can can navigate through transitions we we've covered EMC for years we've seen their their Executive Joe Tucci talk about the waves I I always believed in the DMC strategy for example was was the right one but it could not navigate those waves all right it's been a lot of great companies the digital is the primes the way thanks you know and so we'll see if well I mean guys like the service companies tend to be able to make those transitions all right because they they do you know eat from the trough so to speak right right hey they wait until there's a lot of food and then they go in and and pig out and I do a really good job of it and they're doing it now so that tells you there's food so that's a huge sign a confirmation about this ecosystem so all right anyway a big another big day tomorrow start off with the keynotes at eight a.m. pacific time and and then we start up i think at nine thirty again right correct we start at nine thirty and again we've got a great selection of service now executives of course but more importantly what we look forward to really is the customers and and again as we've said a number of times one of the reasons why this is one of our favorite shows is because we get to talk to practitioners we get to talk to people that are executing that are in the trenches that are transforming their own companies in this competitive world and they happen to be using service
