Look the cloud has become a staple of digital infrastructure. I don't know where we'd be right now without being able to access enterprise services I. T. Services remotely. Um But specifically how our customers looking at backup and recovery in the cloud, is it a kind of a replacement for existing strategies? Is it another layer of protection? How are they thinking about that? >>Yeah. Great question. David again, thank thanks for having me. And I think you know, look if you look back to 15 years ago when the founders of AWS had the hypothesis that many enterprises governments and developers we're gonna want access to on demand pay as you go I. T. Resources in the cloud. Uh None of us would have been able to predict that it would have Matured and um you know become the staple that it has today over the last 15 years. But the reality is that a lot of these enterprise customers, many of whom have been doing their own IT infrastructure for the last 10, 20 or multiple decades do have to kind of figure out how they deal with the change management of moving to the cloud. And while a lot of our customers um will initially come to us because they're looking to save money or costs, almost all of them decided to stay and go big because of the speed at which they are able to innovate on behalf of their customers and when it comes to storage and backup, that just plays right into where they're headed. And there's a variety of different techniques that customers use, whether it be, you know, a lift and shift for a particular set of applications or a data center where they do very much. Look at how can they replace the backup and recovery that they have on premises in the cloud using solutions like, but we're partnering with console to do or completely reimagining their architecture for net new developments that they can really move quickly for their customers. Um and and completely developing something brand new, where it is really a, you know, a brand new replacement and innovation for for for what they've done in the past. >>Great, thank you, Stephen Rachael, I want to ask you about the d were digital. Look, if you're not a digital business today, you're basically out of business. So, my question to you is how have you seen customers change the way they think about data protection during what I call the forced March to digital over the last 18, 19 months or customers, you know, thinking about data protection differently today >>definitely Dave and and thank you for having me and steven. Pleasure to join you on this cube interview first going back to stevens comments can't agree more. Almost every business that we talked with today has a cloud first strategy, a cloud transformation mandate and you know, the reality is back to your digital comment. There are many different paths to the hybrid multi cloud and different customers. You know, there are different parts of the journey. So I still was saying most often customers at least in the data protection perspective start the conversation by thinking here have all these tips. Can I start using cloud as my air gap long term retention target and before they realized they start moving their workloads into the cloud and none of the backup and record yesterday's are going to change. So you need to continue protecting the clothes, which is where the cloud native data protection comes in and then they start innovating around er, can I use cloud as media sites so that you know, I don't need to meet in the other side. So this year is all around us. Cloud transformation is all around us and and the real essence of this partnership between AWS and calm vault is essentially to dr and simplify all the paths to the club regardless of whether you're going to use it as a storage started or you know, your production data center, all your dear disaster recovery site. >>Yeah, it really is about providing that optionality for customers. I talked to a lot of customers and said, hey, our business resilience strategy was really too focused on D. R. I've talked to all the customers at the other end of the spectrum said we don't even have a D. R. Strategy now, we're using the cloud for that. So it's really all over the map and you want that optionality. So steven and then go ahead. >>Please, ransomware plays a big role in many of these considerations that greatly. It's unfortunately not a question of whether you're going to be hit by ransomware, it's almost we can like, what do you do when you're hit by ransomware and the ability to use the clothes scaled immediately, bring up the resources, use the cloud backups has become a very popular choice simply because of the speed with which you can bring the business back to normal our patients. The agility and the power that cloud brings to the table. >>Yeah, ransomware is scary. You don't, you don't even need a high school diploma to be a ransomware ist you can just go on the dark web and by ransomware as a service and do bad things and hopefully you'll end up in jail. Uh Stephen we know about the success of the AWS marketplace, uh you guys are partnering here. I'm interested in how that partnership, you know, kind of where it started and how it's evolving. >>Yeah, happy to highlight on that. So, look when >>we when we started >>Aws or when the founders of aws started aws, as I said 15 years ago we we realized very early on that while we were going to be able to provide a number of tools for customers to have on demand access to compute storage, networking databases that many, particularly enterprise and government government customers still use a wide range of tools and solutions from hundreds, if not in some cases thousands of different partners. I mean I talked to enterprises who literally use thousands of of different vendors to help them deliver their solutions for their customers. So almost 10 years ago, we're almost at our 10 year anniversary for AWS marketplace, we launched the first substantiation of AWS marketplace which allowed builders and customers to find try buy and then deploy third party software solutions running on amazon machine instances also noticed as armies natively right in their AWS and cloud accounts to complement what they were doing in the cloud. And over the last nearly 10 years we've evolved quite a bit to the point where we support software and multiple different packaging types, whether it be amazon machine instances, containers, machine learning models and of course SAS and the rise of software as a service. So customers don't have to manage the software themselves. But we also support data products through the AWS Data exchange and professional services for customers who want to get services to help them integrate the software into their environments. And we now do that across a wide range of procurement options. So what used to be pay as you go amazon machine instances now includes multiple different ways to contract directly, customer can do that directly with the vendor with their channel partner or using kind of our public e commerce capabilities. And we're super excited, um, over the last couple of months we've been partnering with calm vault to get their industry leading backup and recovery solutions listed on AWS marketplace, which is available for our collective customers now. So not only do they have access to convulse awesome solutions to help them protect against ransomware as we talked about and to manage their backup and recovery environments, but they can find and deploy that directly in one click right into their AWS accounts and consolidate their building relationship right on the AWS and voice. And it's been awesome to work with with Rhonda and the product teams and convo to really, um, expose those capabilities where converts using a lot of different AWS services to provide a really great native experience for our collective customers as they migrate to the cloud. >>Yeah, the marketplace has been amazing. We've watched it evolve over the past decade and, and, and it's a, it's a key characteristic of everybody has a cloud today. We're a cloud to butt marketplaces unique uh, in that it's the power of the ecosystem versus the resources of one and Ringo. I wonder from, from your perspective, if you could talk about the partnership with AWS from your view and then specifically you've got some hard news, I wonder if you could talk about that as well. >>Absolute. So the partnership has been extended for more than 12 years. Right. So aws and Commonwealth have been bringing together solutions that help customers solve the data management challenges and everything that we've been doing has been driven by the customer demand that we seek. Right customers are moving their workloads in the cloud. They're finding new ways of deploying their workloads and protecting them. Um, you know, earlier we introduced cloud native integration with the EBS API which has driven almost 70% performance improvements in backup and restores. And when you look at huge customers like coca cola who have standardized on AWS um, combo. That is the scale that they want to operate in. You manage around 1 50,000 snapshots 1200 ec, two instances across six regions. But with just one resource dedicated for the data management strategy. Right? So that's where the real built in integration comes into play and we've been extending it to make use of the cloud efficiencies like our management and auto scale and so on. Another aspect is our commitment to a radically simple customer experience and that's, you know, I'm sure Stephen would agree it's a big month for at AWS as well. That's really together with the customer demand which brought us together to introduce com ball into the AWS marketplace exactly the way Stephen described it. Now the heart announcement is coming back up and recovery is available in native this marketplace. So the exact four steps that Stephen mentioned, find, try buy and deploy everything simplified through the marketplace So that our aws customers can start using far more back of software in less than 20 minutes. A 60 year trial version is included in the product through marketplace and you know, it's a single click buy, we use the cloud formation templates to deploy. So it becomes a super simple approach to protect the AWS workloads and we protect a lot of them. Starting from easy to rds dynamodb document DB um, you know, the containers, the list just keeps going on. So it becomes a very natural extension for our customers to make it super simple to start using convert data protection for the w >>well the con vault stack is very robust. You have extremely mature stack. I want, I'm curious as to how this sort of came about and it had to be customer driven. I'm sure where your customers saying, hey, we're moving to the cloud, we had a lot of workloads in the cloud, we're calm vault customer. That intersection between calm vault and AWS customers. So again, I presume this was customer driven. but maybe you can give us a little insight and add some color to that. >>Everything in this collaboration has been customer driven. We were earlier talking about the multiple paths to chlorine vapor example and still might probably add more color from his own experience at our jones. But I'll bring it to reference Parsons who's a civil engineering leader. They started with the cloud first mandate saying we need to start moving all our backups to the cloud but we have wanted that bad actors might find it easy to go and access the backups edible is um, Conwell came together with the security features and com well brought in its own authorization controls and now we have moved more than 14 petabytes of backup data into the club and it's so robust that not even the backup administrator and go and touch the backups without multiple levels of authorization. Right. So the customer needs, whether it is from a security perspective performance perspective or in this case from a simplicity perspective is really what is driving this. And and the need came exactly like that. There are many customers who have no standardized on it because they want to find everything through the AWS marketplace. They want to use their existing, you know, the AWS contracts and also bring data strategy as part of that so that that's the real um, driver behind this. Um, Stephen and I hope actually announced some of the customers that I actively started using it. You know, many notable customers have been behind this uh, innovation, don't even, I don't know, I wanted to add more to that. >>I would just, I would, I would just add Dave, you know, look if I look back before I joined a W S seven years ago, I was the C I O at dow jones and I was leading a a fairly big cloud migration there over a number of years. And one of the impetus is for us moving to the cloud in the first place was when Hurricane Sandy hit, we had a real disaster recovery scenario in one of our New Jersey data centers um, and we had to act pretty quickly convert was, was part of that solution. And I remember very clearly Even back then, back in 2013, they're being options available to help us accelerate are moved to the cloud and just to reiterate some of the stuff that Rhonda was talking about consoles, done a great job over the last more than a decade, taking features from things like EBS and S three and EC two and some of our networking capabilities and embedding them directly into their services so that customers are able to more quickly move their backup and recovery workloads to the cloud. So each and every one of those features was as a result of, I'm sure combo working backwards from their customer needs just as we do at >>AWS >>and we're super excited to take that to the next level to give customers the option to then also by that right on their AWS invoice on AWS marketplace. >>Yeah, I mean, we're gonna have to leave it there steven, you've mentioned several times the sort of the early days of back then we were talking about gigabytes and terabytes and now we're talking about petabytes and beyond. Is it a kind of a replacement for existing strategies? Is it another layer of protection? How are they thinking about that? >> Yeah. Great question, Dave. And again, thanks. Thanks for having me. And I think, you know, look. If you look back to 15 years ago, when the founders of AWS had the hypothesis that many enterprises, governments, and developers were going to want access to on demand, pay as you go, IT resources in the cloud. None of us would have been able to predict that it would have matured and, um, you know become the staple that it has today over the last 15 years. But the reality is that a lot of these are enterprise customers. Many of whom have been doing their own IT infrastructure for the last 10, 20 or or multiple decades do have to kind of figure out how they deal with it. The change management of moving to the cloud, and while a lot of our customers will initially come to us because they're looking to save money or costs. Almost all of them decide to stay and go big because of the speed at which they're able to innovate on behalf of their customers. And when it comes to storage and backup, that just plays right into where they're headed and there's a variety of different techniques that customers use. Whether it be, you know, a lift and shift for a particular set of applications. Or a data center or where it, where they do very much look at how can they replace the backup and recovery that they have on premises in the cloud using solutions like what we're partnering with Commvault to do. Or completely re-imagining their architecture for net new developments that they can really move quickly for, for their customers and, and completely developing something brand new, where it is really a, um, you know a brand new replacement and innovation for, for, for what they've done in the past. >> Great. Thank you, Stephen. Ranga, I want to ask you about the D word, digital. Look, if you're not a digital business today, you're basically out of business. So my question to you Ranga is, is how have you seen customers change the way they think about data protection during what I call the forced March to digital over the last 18, 19 months? Are customers thinking about data protection differently today? >> Definitely Dave, and and thank you for having me and Stephen pleasure to join you on this CUBE interview. First, going back to Stephen's comments, can't agree more. Almost every business that we talk with today has a cloud first strategy, a cloud transmission mandate. And, you know, the reality is back to your digital comment. There are many different paths to the hybrid micro cloud. And different customers. You know, there are different parts of the journey. So as Stephen was saying, most often customers, at least from a data protection perspective. Start the conversation their thinking, hey, I have all these tapes, can I start using cloud as my air gap, long-term retention target. And before they realize they start moving their workloads into the cloud, and none of the backup and recovery facilities are going to change. So you need to continue protecting the cloud, which is where the cloud meta data protection comes in. And then they start innovating around DR Can I use cloud as my DR sites so that, you know, I don't need to meet in another site. So this is all around us, cloud transmissions, all around us. And, and the real essence of this partnership between AWS and Commvault is essentially to drive, and simplify all the paths to the cloud Regardless of whether you're going to use it as a storage target or, you know, your production data center or your DR. Disaster Recovery site. >> Yeah. So really, it's about providing that optionality for customers. So that's where the real built-in integration comes into play. And we've been extending it to make use of the cloud efficiencies like power management and auto-scale, and so on. Another aspect is our commitment to a radically simple customer experience. And that's, you know, I'm sure Stephen would agree. It's a big mantra at AWS as well. That's really, together, the customer demand that's brought us together to introduce combo into the AWS Marketplace, exactly the way Stephen described it. Now the hot announcement is calmer, backup and recovery is available in AWS Marketplace. So the exact four steps that Stephen mentioned: find, try, buy, and deploy everything simplified to the Marketplace so that our AWS customers can start using our more backup software in less than 20 minutes. I mean, we're going to have to leave it there. Stephen you've mentioned this several times, there's sort of the early days of AWS. I have a special announcement from our friends at Commvault. So welcome back to the program. We have two of our cube alumni. First, we have Manoj Nair, he's actually the general manager of Metallic, which is a Commvault venture. First time Manoj on the program in your role with, with Commvault, welcome back. And also welcoming back Ranga Rajagopalan who's the vice president of products at Commvault. Ranga, caught up with you recently at the FutureReady event that we had over the summer. Thanks so much for joining us again. >> Sure. >> Alright. So Manoj, let's start. Metallic obviously was, you know, the standout you know, thing that everybody talked about last year at Commvault GO. Really helping to, you know, put Commvault clearly into the SaaS marketplace out there. Talking about how, you know, all the wonderful features for managing my data in a cloud environment. So there is an expansion to the portfolio that we're announcing today. Why don't you share the news? >> Yeah, absolutely Stu, you know, it's great to be back here with all of you and Metallic has come a long way from the launch. Just less than a year ago, we announced the creation of Metallic multiple different offerings whether it's protecting SaaS workloads like O365, remote endpoints and a hybrid cloud workloads. You know, the context that we're getting from our customers, especially in the last six months, increased cloud adoption and, you know, remote working collaboration suites being adopted. All of that has been a great accelerator for adoption of SaaS data protection, which is really what the Metallic is offering. We have gone to global countries and expanded to our Commvault customer base who was, you know, using both Commvault software and Metallic now. One of the key things that we're not, you know, today's announcement is focused on a Metallic cloud storage service that as a new service available for Commvault customers are looking to get a, you know, fully managed secure cloud-based SaaS target for protecting all of the data as an air gap copy and this is, you know, is more relevant than ever. >> So Manoj, using the cloud for data protection, for backup isn't new? Ranga, help us understand. I heard in there air gap, I heard, you know, leveraging the cloud. Absolutely, we've seen a huge tailwind for cloud adoption but there's that gap for making sure customers, you know, protect their data, secure their data. Do they have the skillset to be able to leverage that, so help help us drill in and understand what's different about this new service >> You're right Stu. Cloud is absolutely not new but what is really unique about today's announcement with metallic cloud storage service is that we are bringing cloud even closer to our Commvault customers. So thinking from a data management perspective, our customers want to more easily and securely get the benefits of cloud storage. What we are doing today is integrating Metallic cloud storage service as a cloud storage target into our Commvault software as well as our HyperScale X plans. And that lets our customers to seamlessly use cloud storage for their data protection, backup and archival use cases without needing to understand a lot about the cloud, without needing to get through any of the complexities. Think of it as the easy button that is now introduced into the Commvault software and HyperScale X. >> All right, so, if I heard you right, this is a managed service that Commvault is offering. Did I get that right? >> That's fast. >> Yeah >> So, you know, it's a managed service. It's public cloud storage. It's, as Ranga said, the easy button to be able to create your air gap copies in the cloud. And, you know, with everything that we keep hearing about ransomware, and we believe this is one of the, the, the most important steps in ransomware readiness, a lot of our customers are already doing it by bringing their own cloud storage on all the clouds we protect, but it's still not easy. And this is a skills gap, you know, the procurement process and all of that, you know, the management of the credentials, the setting up of the networking, all of that is encapsulated. So now, it's just, you know, it's like a built-in feature, just, you know plug it in and now you've got an on-ramp to the cloud. Make sure you have your air gap copy. >> Yeah, maybe it would help if you'd, if you'd talk about the easy button, give us a little compare contrast 'cause, right, I could go, I could spin up instance of the cloud, but, you know, who has access? What are the security settings? There's a whole litany of things that I need to make sure I've got the right identity management. It's kind of easy, but not necessarily simple to, to be able to do that. So from what you're describing I don't even need to really think, you know, yes, it's in the cloud, I'm leveraging all the wonderful things of the cloud, but I don't have to have that, that ramp up of skillset if I don't already have that in house as... Ranga, sounds like I'm understanding that. >> Yeah >> You know. >> Yeah, you're perfectly understanding and that's all there is to it. And let me expand on the PC part there, right? For us, simplicity is into end-customer experience. So I'm going to break this down from a customer life cycle perspective. Think of a Commvault customer who's backing up pretty much all the workloads in the data center. The first question they have is, you know, "For security reasons "for easy, or because I'm in a transformation project "I need to make, I need to start using cloud storage." So the first complexity they would face is understanding which cloud provider to use, what kind of cloud profile to use? or who their cloud or chasing model, which is very different from how they normally procure their hardware and software. So that's really the first dimension of simplicity that this Metallic cloud storage offer. Our customers can procure their cloud storage along with any other Commvault software and hardware just like they would do any other Commvault software. So that's the first level of simplicity. The second one is "How do I bring "that into my data management life cycle." And again, as I mentioned before, MCSS is fully integrated into Commvault software. So through the simplicity of command center, which is the one UI that brings all our products together, customers can just click to the cloud storage target and start backing up, moving copies, archiving, doing all the data management use cases, the second dimension of simplicity. And the third one really is the predictability. You know, cloud is beautiful, It brings a lot of flexibility, but it also brings in a lot of new terms. What are the egress charges? What does ingress mean? What does egress mean? What happens when I have the V store? What happens when I have the Ricola? So all of that complexity is taken away. We handle all of that in the backend. From the customer's perspective, just like they use CAP, just like they use the Desk, now, they can use cloud. We handled all the egress and all those kind of stuff in the backend. From the customer's perspective, they get a simple, predictable price point. So from the time of choosing, procuring it, using it and continuously getting the best benefits out of it, the easy button extends across that entire dimension. And the beauty in all of this is customers getting all the benefits of cloud without having to really understand much about cloud. So that's really the benefit we bring to the table with MCSS. >> Yeah. Manoj, Commvault has a long history of being able to live on, you know, various infrastructures that customers have. Are you able to share who the, I'm assuming there's a cloud partner for part of this, so who is the, the underlying IS? >> Yeah, so still, you know, end of June doing, we announced the next phase of our strategic partnership with Microsoft. So this is a, you know, one of the first big, new things that is coming out of the giant partnership between Commvault and Microsoft around Metallic and Microsoft Azure. There's a lot of things that, you know, we're jointly doing that are unique that make all of the simplicity Ranga, you know, just mentioned, come to life and, you know, that's, you know, power of the end as I call it. It's Commvault and Metallic and Microsoft, you know, coming together to make this really easy for our customers to start getting the value out of leveraging cloud for the data protection. Yeah. >> Well, Manoj, it seems natural extension of what you've already talked about for what Metallic can protect. Of course, you've got the, you know, the business suite from Microsoft, can you help frame it for us, you know, where this new, the MCSS fits in the Metallic portfolio today? >> Yeah absolutely. So if you look at, you know, what... I'll give you a customer journey and what's been happening. If you are not a Commvault customer today and you're looking at "What's my best 0365 data protection option," if you go to microsoft.com, you'll actually find Metallic in there as the recommended offer. And they, they might start the journey there or you're an existing Commvault customer and you start rapidly adopting teams and O365, you know, post COVID. The, the, you know, Metallic is the default option. So it doesn't matter how you enter in, you're now getting a full, you know, SaaS actual backup as a service, no storage costs, no egress costs. And so our Commvault customers have been asking, "We love that part of it, why not make that available "for all of the other data that is being protected "by Commvault, either appliance or software on-prem?" and, you know, in a very simple way, it's, you know, the best things are driven by customers. And in this case, our customers came to us and said, "We love the simple button "not just what's included in the Metallic service, "we would like that that to be available, even for, "you know, the existing software you're protecting on-prem "for the air gap copy use case is kind of the biggest one." And you know, all of the things that Ranga said in terms of simplicity now comes to bear. And it's something that we were including inside the Metallic SaaS offerings. Now, it's available for software and appliance customers. >> Yeah. I definitely, I've heard of the industry now. Microsoft seems a little bit more amenable to, you know, not charging for egress, with some of their partners, when they put together these solutions. Ranga, Manoj has mentioned air gap a couple of times, can you help us frame, you know, what that means today? You know, I even think back, you know, ape that most people are familiar with. Even, I think about, you know, Google, you know, use ape for many years even in the public cloud to give that air gap. Of course, we've talked to your customers lots about how to protect against ransomware. So how does, how does this fit in the new solution? >> You know, unfortunately, Stu today. It's, it's important reality for us to discuss the ransomware readiness. Number of attacks are going up depending on, you know, which your source you are listening to. So security is a very important concern in top of our customers' minds. Now, MCSS is cloud storage, so it is off site storage. So it comes with all the natural layered security that it's built into cloud storage. Additionally, Commvault brings a complete ransomware protection, protection and recovery framework, which becomes inherently available with the MCSS. And let me explain that in a few very simple quotes. Now, the entire journey from on-prem to the cloud storage is completely encrypted. So that's, you know, a very important part of the order on security mechanism, but here is where it really becomes cool Commvault software is managing the cloud credentials, the cloud keys. So the entire access to MCSS as a cloud storage target is managed to Commvault. So there isn't an independent cloud admin accessing that storage, which opens it up for any kind of an intentional or unintentional access. Anything can happen when you allow that access. So Commvault completely manages that access the keys are owned by the customer, but managed by a Commvault. So it's a really air gap security, layered security mechanism that you get in combination with the entire framework of air gap isolation, anomaly protection, the authentication, everything that is built into the Commvault framework. So when you, when you bring in the simplicity that we talked about earlier, you can apply that to the security angle as well here. Instead of making the customer manage yet another piece in the jigsaw, we are managing it for them. So from their perspective, it is a seamless extension to their data management strategy while it also adds an extra layer of security and a readiness to recover from ransomware attacks. >> While it's being launched today, we already have customers that have, you know, we have accelerated into adoption of MCSS and it's coming exactly for the scenarios Ranga just said. You know, they, they have a requirement for a cloud copy. If you have seen that on the Metallic SaaS side that some of the customers might be in pilot mode. And because they were in pilot mode, they were quickly able to recover from attacks that happened. Unfortunately, those, those things are reality. And we have had customers who after the attack go and say "I want to make sure it's much easier to recover from that." And so we already have our first customers who are starting to adopt the service even as we launch it today. >> Well. I'm so glad you brought up the customer examples. Manoj, give us a little bit just the high level view, you talked about the growth and adoption of Metallic overall, and you just talked about kind of the, the single management. You got any SaaS for us, you know, how much data do you have in the cloud now and, you know, what's the growth looking like? And talk a little bit about, you know, what we can expect going forward from this portfolio. >> Yeah, I, you know, I don't know how many people disclose this or not, but we have disclosed it in the past, we have over an exabyte of data today in the cloud that, you know, our customers are, you know, either using a Metallic or bringing their own cloud with Commvault and writing to the cloud. So, you know, that's probably, you know, best in class out there. What we are also seeing is the acceleration of that, you know, so we look at it's, you know, it's exponential growth over a hundred percent, you know, we're, we're seeing that, that rise in leverage yet it's something that when you look at the overall industry percentages, it depends on whose stats you use, it's probably only 5%, maybe 10% that are leveraging the cloud for anything, whether it's, you know, in this case, it's data, cloud data as a secondary target. So there's a lot of untapped potential. And the things that Ranga said I think really are the ones our customers are telling us as we tested this out. And those are the biggest reasons. Right cost, you know, I'm concerned about it. I've heard that it's unpredictable. It goes up, people start spinning up other things that they shouldn't be. And so I want predictable costs, you know, security and the whole model around it, the, the governance of the keys, and finally skills, everyone's busy, no one's trying to not be, you know, upping their cloud skills yet it's not something that is very, you know, very easy for most people to, you know, become an expert. And if you're not an expert while you're protecting your data, that's not, you know, that's not something you want to do, so you kind of hold back. And I think this is really the biggest thing that customers are looking at, like our cloud expertise packaged in an offering solving all those things? >> And Stu, we discussed this at FutureReady of how the Commvault portfolio continues to come closer and closer together in order to deliver that increased value to our customers. In July, when we were having a similar conversation, we saw how Hedvig came in as the scale load storage in our HyperScale X integrated data protection plans. And we can see that we have Metallic Cloud Storage Service coming in as a cloud extension to our software, as well as HyperScale X. So it's kind of bringing the best of both worlds, customers who want to continue to stay on for them, protect their on-prem workloads with on-prem footprint. You have HyperScale X as a very nice scale, which integrated our plans. And as the capacity needs increase, as the security needs increase, you have MCSS now as a managed storage extension, bringing together those pieces of the portfolio. Now, the thing that is now available already as of September 15 is our ability to manage Metallic as part of command center. So while you want that SaaS flexibility and you're using Metallic to protect the SaaS workloads let's also realize that there are a bunch of other workloads that you might be protecting using Commvault software all through HyperScale. We can now bring all of them together into the simplicity of command center. So it, again, takes away another point of complexity for the customer. Just one UI, go ahead, do protect the workloads the way you want. With the form factor you want. SaaS software, or our plans, and we bring it all together into a single management framework for you. So you're going to continue seeing the portfolio coming closer together because our prime concern is to provide flexibility of choice to customers. Flexibility of choice in so many different ways, you know, you can use software, our plans or SaaS. You can bring your own on-prem storage, cloud storage, or if you want to hit the simple button, use Metallic clouds for it. So, so you're going to see that happen as we move forward. >> Well. Manoj, Ranga, thank you so much for the updates. Congratulations on the launch. Love little tagline leading it. I'm Lisa Martin, my co-host is Stu Miniman, and Stu and I have a couple of guests from Cisco's Data Center Networking group with us. To my right, Thomas Scheibe, VP of Product Management and to his right, Ranga Rao, Senior Director of Product Management. Guys, welcome to theCUBE. Welcome back, Ranga. >> Thank you very much. >> Thomas, great to have you. >> Happy to be here, yeah. >> So, here we are in the DevNet Zone, this is, Ranga you were saying this is probably one of the busiest locations within all of Cisco Live. It's been jammed since this morning. >> Stu: You got the ACI Takeover going on right now. >> It is! >> Yes, yes. >> So with that said, Thomas, with ACI, application-centric infrastructure, all these changes to the network, what's going on on day two? >> It's fun, it's actually, yeah, as you say, it's a little busier. We have a good set of news coming this week and yeah, you're going to hear more but let me give a little bit of a hint here as to what we're doing. We talked about how do we extend ACI into the cloud, or, as they say, anywhere. We did this two or three months ago with AWS. We're following up with the same for Azure, as well as having extension into the IBM Cloud, so that's really really exciting, opens up a lot of capabilities not just for the networking teams, how to extend into the cloud, we also have some interesting things around how we actually can start with ACI in the cloud first for the app developers, and then come back if you want to deploy either in the cloud or on prem. So, really an extension of what is doable for the networking team, as well as actually for the app teams. >> So, any ACI, any platform, any location, any workload? Any hypervisor, any container platform you want, yeah. Flexibility, that's what this is about. So, Ranga, spoke with you earlier this year at one of your partner shows, talking about all the latest, you know, AI, cognitive learning and all of those pieces there. Partner's obviously a big piece of the ACI story here. >> Thomas: Yeah. >> Thomas was giving a little talk about some of the cloud provider, what more can you share about what's happening with how your product integrates with a vast ecosystem? >> Absolutely, when we built ACI, we sort of anticipated this moment when this crowd in the DevNet area that we are seeing, right? Like, from people shifting from a very CLI focused approach to a developer focused, and integrated solution-focused approach. So we built ACI as an open platform. We have 65 plus partners, and with new integrations coming on like every so often. Just this at Cisco Live, we are launching an integration with F5. F5 is building, has built, an app for the Cisco ACI App Center, and a whole number of tools and integrations for developers. We have essentially built integrations with Ansible, Terraform, and new Python modules, so these are all exciting new things coming at Cisco Live. >> So, when you guys talk with customers, being in product management, I know you talk to customers all the time. There's presumably a very bidirectional symbiotic relationship. When you're talking with customers, Thomas, what are some of the values that they're looking for ACI to help them deliver, especially as it relates to being able to get more value out of the data that they've got? >> Right, so there are a couple of things that are probably standing out. One is, if you turn to the networking team, it's all around network automation and segmentation. There are the two biggest things everybody's after. Particularly if you look as the data is more distributed it's become harder and harder to do those all manually. You want to automate your date one activity as well as you want to make sure you can enforce segmentation of the data lost in the cloud, and on prem, all over the place. So these are the two big ones that really every network operations team is after. And then the second piece that we see obviously more and more is, what about day two? Give me better visibility, in particular, as they say, if the data is so dissolute, get me better visibility. What is going on? And then be able to tie this back to the user, which is the application team. Is there an impact on the application or not? And so there are a lot of interesting tools that we have and we're going to demo those all here, that is available for the networking team. The other piece, really, and you asked for the values, as I said, the app team, right? What is today, if an app team is developing they're typically then handed over in production. This is where this friction happens. How long does it take to go from here to here? If I can shorten that one and just take the blueprints out of the app development process, and map it directly to the automation capability of ACI, I can shorten the cycle to deploy, and so that's a tremendous value that we do see from customers. >> Great, lots of discussion in the keynote about the ever changing architectures that are happening here. Give us the update, you know? We've been down this path for ACI for a few years now, but where are your customers at? You know, what are the new things that are causing them challenges and opportunities, Thomas? >> Yeah, I probably use instead of ever changing I would say ever expanding, but you're absolutely right, because what we saw when we started this office rollaround how do I automate my data center? How do I get a cloud experience in my data center? What we see changing, and what I find is driven by this whole app refactoring process, that customers want to deploy apps maybe in the cloud, maybe develop in the cloud and so they need an extension to their automated data center into the cloud, and so really what you see from us is an expansion of that ACI concept, to Ranga's point, we actually really didn't change. We're just extending it to container development platforms, to different cloud environments, but it's the same idea, how do I automate the end to end network reach as well as these segmentations? >> Ranga, maybe can you expand on some of the automated piece of it, even, you know, I look at one of the things that jumped out at me this week is there's some changes to the CCIE program. It's not just, okay, I've done it, and I do my test. It's, well, we understand that things are changing year to year, and therefor how I get my certification, How I keep up on these, it is going to change. Where does automation play in all of this? >> Absolutely, I mean, when you think about automation there are two key parts to it. One is the automation that happens within the fabric that the controller manages and there's a lot of that. To extend on what Thomas was saying, right, in terms of how quickly the fabric can be brought up, how quickly applications can be deployed on the fabric and so on. Beyond that, there's automation that we have built leveraging the modern devo apps and CICD tools that are very popular among the developer community. Like I said, we have built integrations with Ansible, Terraform and so on, but we have also made rich APIs available across our platform. Every piece of information that the controller or the switches have is very much accessible for developers. That's really a back breaking approach to networking where developers have access to everything and can program to the network. So I think that's where the world is going, and that's what we plan to support with automation. >> Let me comment on this, because there's an interesting piece where we did, right? We have this fabric controller called the APIC. It's actually an App posting platform as well and so where we're actually taking advantage of that, everything is code in ACI, and you can write as a partner customer, apps, right on top, and so like the F5 integration that we have done is literally an F5-written and app residing there, right? And so it's really, really really flexible to build workflows around what you want to do on any infrastructure, for customers themself, for any partner themself. >> Yeah, it's an interesting piece, cause when you think, you know, I think back at my career. How much did the network really, the network architect think about the applications? Like, oh, okay, how much throughput and sure, I need it to go from north to south to east, west. Or, oh, wait, this thing needed some extra buffer credits, but usually, you know, the business owner, application owner and the network people, they were throwing things over the wall between each other and tweaking some dials here. Now when I look around this show, it's we're talking about building applications at the core of it and it's happening together. Can you speak a little bit to some of the activities going around, and that trend? >> No, absolutely, it's actually exciting. I actually, because my background is I did programming long long time back, and it's actually- >> Back when you called it programming, not coding? >> Correct. (laughing) it was programming. It is actually exciting to see, and I can tell you over the fast four, five years, when we run these techtorials we ask, cause, like architecture and programming, how many people are interested programming? And it used to be, I dunno, 10%. Now it's literally 60 to 70% of the people in the room are saying we're using automation frameworks like Ansible, and they actually see what we're doing and the value and they want to learn more. So there's a significant shift in terms of what people expect, what they want to do as a network infrastructure, versus what it was in the past. It's just a reflection on, as I said, the agility that is needed out of the infrastructure, and how do we react to what the developers, the users, want to do that put the apps on, so. >> In the spirit of Cisco's bridge to possible which was the Barcelona theme, is this a bridge to IT and business working better together? >> Absolutely. I mean the way... I dunno whether I can say much, but it's absolutely, how do I bridge, we call it initially, how do I bridge between what you called out, the networking and application team? It's the bridge to possible. It's not like, oh, it's your problem, it's my problem. We can do it together or these two teams can do it together, absolutely. That's actually a very good reference. >> To add to that, when we were in 2012 thinking about what should ACI be, everyone in the industry was somehow thinking that all the network engineers will magically become programmers, right? So programmability is a big part of what the network needs but also being aware of the application and being able to respond to the right needs of the application at the right moment is a pretty big thing, and that's what we have built with ACI, with the first class support for programmability. >> And the programmability that we're seeing and hearing about, Ranga, how is that a differentiator for Cisco? >> So, I think, first of all, the network, we have always believed, is the nervous system of the enterprise, so a lot really interesting information goes through the network, so unlocking the value of the network for these different use cases is what's made possible with the programmability approaches that we have taken, right? The only reason why we have 65 plus partners programming to our platform, is because we have these open APIs. We have a ton of channel partners using the open APIs to build apps and to, like, support videos, different use cases for our customers, with ad hoc automation or even using some of the automation framework, so it has really, evolved the network from being CLI-centric to being solution and programmability centric. >> Maybe one point to make since he said open APIs, and I can't overemphasize this, we're truly open APIs, right? Because sometimes there's in this, not naming names, but people saying, oh, you have to be a certification to use these APIs. That is not the case for Cisco APIs on ACI. They are open. Everybody, customers, partners, quite frankly, even competitors could use those to program. We're standing behind our APIs. They can be used as-is. >> So it is quite a big change. I mean, people know historically, Cisco it's like, well, Cisco solves customer problems, and then they would drive it through the standards. Here, you know, we we've watched the ascendency of the DevNet group, and you know, hundreds of thousands of people now helping to build code. It's the API economy, so, you know, very much it's not the Cisco I thought about a generation ago. >> Thank you. You know, we take this as a compliment. We're actually really excited to see how much development is possible by opening this platform up with APIs and I think that somebody else said this, so it's not all mine, but your more APIs to have, you have user lists to integrate, the faster we jointly develop and actually achieve what we want, so that's the bridge. >> And the beautiful thing about APIs is customers and other developers learn things that we wouldn't have and we learn, and we are seeing a lot of that, so that's another way of unlocking innovation for our customers, and we are seeing a lot of that, you know? >> So when we talk with any customer, any business, we always talk about speed scale, speed to innovation. With the wave of connectivity, the expansion of 5G, WiFi six, the proliferation of mobile data that's going to be traversing the networks the next few years. It's going to be video. How is an application-centric infrastructure going to allow customers to take advantage of the demands on the network that need for speed, so that your customers can be as competitive as they need to be? >> Let me try to kind of tune down to the essence there. What really is going on, you have all these different applications, as you point out, all of these users and endpoints, and what you want to do is you want to have an ability to correlate between what the user wants to run on the infrastructure and how the infrastructure has to behave. And then also, you want to correlate back as to infrastructure issues, who is impacted? And really was ACI was about is not rebuilding applications. It was about, provide this glue, this bridge, between what's going on in the infrastructure to what the user experience is, and if I can do this it becomes so much more efficient and it's so much easier to roll out all these new applications on an ACI infrastructure. >> Exciting stuff, guys. from our studios in the heart of Silicon Valley Palo Alto California this is a cute conversation hello everyone welcome to this cube conversation here in Palo Alto California I'm John Fourier host of the cube we are in the cube studios we're here with Ranga Rao's Senior Director of Product Management Cisco Networking group and David link the CEO of science logic tell what their part is guys great to see you thanks I come in it glad to be here so you guys had a great event by the way symposium in DC thanks a lot of momentum yeah it was fun to watch he was there eight videos up on YouTube but you guys are classic partnership here with Cisco talk about the relationship you guys are meeting in the channel got a lot of joint customers a lot of innovation talk about the relationship between science logic and Cisco Cisco and science logic have been working together because our customers demand us to work together right so across more for more than 10 years science logic has been a strong part of for Cisco working across various different business units when we started working on ACI which is application centric infrastructure which is the product that my group works on we thought science logic was a perfect partner to work with and in fact some of our joint customers including Cisco IT which is a customer of science logic two came to the table and said we needed an integration with science logic so customers are a huge part of the genesis of the partnership and that's what keeps us going together and the fact that we have such strong synergies from a technology perspective makes it really easy for us to collaborate and the fact that we have both open platforms with strong api's makes it really easy for us to collaborate and this is the real haveá-- we're here to the chalk tracks around you know these API so this abstraction software layer zci has kind of gone the next level we covered that at Cisco live Dave we talked before about your value proposition you're on the front lines Cisco obviously has this new programmability model where their goal is to leverage the value the network abstract away the complexities and allow people to get more value out of it how is that working in what and how do you guys tie into Cisco it's really an ecosystem of technologies and partnerships that deliver outcomes for customers Cisco's advancing technology so fast we've seen an innovation sprint from Cisco it's actually causing us to sprint with them on behalf of their customers but ultimately we've had to introduce deep integrated monitoring across all the fabrics that they support for software-defined and that includes visibility into the ACCAC eye fabrics but it also goes through into the virtual machines the storage layers the operating systems the application layer so when you pull all of that together that's a day to challenge for the enterprise to make sure they're delivering outcomes to the customer that are above expectations recently we supported support for multi-site and multi pod ACI fabric we're working on a CI anywhere in the cloud we're really Cisco's extending the datacenter hyper-converged solutions to deliver value propositions no matter where the applications live so that's a huge step forward and then it causes operational initiatives to say how are we going to solve that problem for our customers no matter where the application lives so that's really where we're focused helping solve problems on that day to side of make all these technologies come to collect together to deliver a great outcome for the end-user and so they're enabling you with the with the ACI if a hyper converges to go out and do your thing yes so we instrument all those different really abstracted components because what we have with container management with Software Defined it's abstraction on top of core routes which and server and hypervisor technologies that bring it together in an intuitive way ultimately what we've seen from the enterprise and service providers is they really want infrastructure delivered as a service and that's really where Cisco's headed helping make that a reality with these products we just helped bring them together with the instrumentation analytics to operate them as one system you know ranking this is a great example of what we're seeing in this modern era with the data center on premises modernization growth of the cloud the advent of you know real hybrid cloud and private cloud as well as public cloud you guys are in a good position so I want to kind of dig into some talk tracks one you mentioned day two operates I've heard that term kicked around before cuz this is kind of speaks to this modernization in IT operations you know enabling an environment for you know Network compute storage to work seamlessly this is this is the real deal what is day to operations can you like define what that is yeah so our customers essentially go through the journey of building and network for some purpose to deliver an application or a service to their end users so the we think of the process of them building the network is day zero configuring the network for the particular operator a particular service as day one and everything that they deal with which is a lot of complexity which is they where they spend 80% of their time 90% of their budget has data operations which is a very complex domain so this is the area that we have been focusing within our business unit to make our customers lives easier with products that essentially solve some of these problems and collaborating with partners like science logic to make the operations of our customers much easier a important part of data operations is making sure that we provide the light right kind of abstractions for our customers initially customers used to configure switches on a switch by switch basis using command line interfaces with obscure commands what we have done within the data center as of like 2014 is brought in the application centric abstraction so customers can configure the network in the language of the application which is the intent interesting you know I'm old enough to remember those days of standing those networks up day one day zero on day one but I think day two has become really the new environment because day 2 operates was simply you know make sure the lights are on provision the switches top of racks all that stuff that went on and then you managed it you had your storage administrator all these things we're kind of static perimeter based security all that now is kind of thrown away so I think day two is almost like the reality of the situation because you now have micro services you've got apps and DevOps manding to have the agility and programmability the network so I got to ask is if that's true and you got cloud over the top happening this means that the software has to be really rock-solid because it's not getting less complex it's getting more complex so it's what is science logic fit in today too we've been focused on all these different technologies you bring together so from an intent based perspective Cisco's been really focused on intent based solutions but that lines up to a business service the business service is made up of a lot of different technologies that can come from many different locations to deliver you an application to you where you're super satisfied with an outcome its delivering productivity to you all the great things that you're hoping to experience when you interact with an application but behind the scenes there's a whole myriad of technologies that we instrument from a fault configuration performance analytics and really an analysis perspective to see all these multivariate data streams coming together in a hub where we can analyze them and understand the relationships the context of how all of those data feeds come together to enable a service so if we know that service view again no matter where the service is coming from in Cisco is now supporting ECI anywhere so that service could be sitting in a lot of different places today and we're seeing more and more hybrid applications and I think that's around for a long time to stay for good reasons security compliance and other reasons you've got to bring all that together and understand real time the real time operational viewpoint of how is it now and more so that proactive insight to know if you have an anomaly across any one of these performance variants how that may impact the service so is it going to be impacting the service and really help operations stay proactive I think that's where the DevOps and focuses right now look at evolution of DevOps gene King was on the cube said 3% of enterprises have adopted Ewa certainly there's the early adopters we all know who they are they're there DevOps cloud native from day one but really the adoption of DevOps is not yet there on mainstream is getting there but you're speaking to day two operations as kind of like operations you mentioned developers the apps that needs to be built to require all this infrastructure program ability this is where I think a CIS can I guess you need intrument ation so you need IT ops and you got to have program ability of the network but everyone's talking about automation so to me it sounds like there's an automation story in here if you got an instrument everything you got to have move beyond command line and configuring is that how does that fit it how's the automation finish yeah absolutely first of all within the ACI fabric we have we have a controller based approach so there's a single place of managing the entire infrastructure today we have customers who use two hundred-plus physicals which is being managed by a single point that's a huge amount of automation for provisioning the network from the perspective of managing the network the controller continuously looks at what's going on and essentially we have a product core network assurance engine which look which are which is a second pair of eyes which will tell you proactively if there are problems in the network right but a broader automation is needed where you can actually look at information from various different silos because network as important as we as cisco think is one part of the whole puzzle rate information comes from many different places so there's a platform that's needed where people can funnel in pieces of information from various different places and analyze that pieces of information figure out trends find the things that are of interest to them and operate in a data-driven fashion they want to get your thoughts on this next talk track around the impact of the cloud because if this happens the automations is pretty much agreed upon the industry therefore we've gotta automate things that are repetitive mundane tasks and certainly the network's a lot of command line stuff that can be automated away value will shift to other places but with the impact of cloud operation the operational side of the data center is looking more and more cloud like so in a way whether the debate of moving to the private cloud versus on-premises goes away and it becomes more of a cloud operation story on-premises multi-cloud on public clouds is kind of a new system this is the operational shift this is where all the action is talk about your perspective on this because this is kind of like you know it's not a simple saying lift and shift and moving into the cloud it's I want cloud like economics I want cloud like elasticity I want all that benefit on premises that's day two in my opinion would you agree I do and I think that's sometimes lost on the industry that we have a lot of clouds that we have to serve and for good purpose they're gonna live in different places but back to the earlier comment you've got to then pull information into a data hub I'll just call it in an architecture of data where you've got it from multiple sources whether it's clouds or private hyper-converged the wireless to the end-user all these different layers often that are being abstracted we've got to really understand how that relates to a user experience so when we think about what are the end results we're trying to achieve we're trying to be proactive so among the things that we're working on from a vision perspective instead of thinking about waiting for a system across any one of these tiers to have a fault where it tells you I've got a problem here's a trap here's a log I've experienced this problem we really want to do a lot more on the front end that performance analytics the anomaly detection to get across multivariate all these very 'it's mean this kind of performance health and in a performance score cisco has been investing heavily here we have as well jointly for some of our customers what I'd like to see in the future our vision is that you rely less on fault management and more on the proactive analytics side so that you understand anomalous behavior and how that could impact your experience as an end-user and fix it through automation before there is a problem so that's a very different thought I'd love to say our industry should in the future worry less about event correlation and more about predictive behavior so that's where we're spending a lot I don't like so wherever the false look for the goodness to I mean where's the zag lesion but you have to have all these data streams and you have to understand how they can textually relate to one another to make those important decisions and recommendations well you know I've always said this on the cube you can you know in this world of digital you can instrument everything so you soon it's going to be a matter of time for seeing what everything's happening but knowing what to look at it's kind of like what you're getting at yes hey Rach I talked about your your perspective because again and one of the things that Dave Volante and I just do many we talk about all the time on the cube is we debate this cloud conversation because I think my opinion is it's one big distributed architecture second operating system the cliff it's all the cloud they're all edges nodes and arcs on a distributed a dissenter certainly isn't going away but if everything is a network connection well that's the edge your data center you got this is you're in the business of networking right what's your take on all this because you know if it's a cloud operations it's a shift from the old IT to the new IT what's your perspective on this so the moniker that we have been using this year is that there's nothing centered about the data centers like you said there are workloads that reside in many different environments including the cloud so customers are demanding consistent operations and consistent management capabilities across this many different environments right so you're right the data center itself is turning out more to be like a cloud and we have even seen large cloud providers like offer solutions that sit within a customer's data center right so that's one area in which the words evolving another area is in terms of all the tools that are coming together to solve some of the operational problems to be more predictive and more proactive yeah you know I like to draw horns sometimes too many minute we keep on coin the term private cloud years ago and everyone was throwing hate at them you know on the way I don't know what's this private cloud nonsense if that's what's happening there's a private cloud it's a hybrid cloud multiple clouds you have public cloud and again you're gonna have multi purpose pick the right cloud for the workload kind of environment going on kind of like the way the tools business would but it's still platform so so guys thanks for coming in and sharing your insights I really appreciate that before we go take a minute to get the plug in for what you guys are working on give the company update what's going on you're hiring revenues up what's happening give us a state of the science logic what's going on so we had a great first quarter the best first quarter in the history of the company the health of the business is good I think the underlying theme is the transform of infrastructure is causing a lot of people to rethink the monitoring tooling as to how do we need to manage in this new operating environment you mentioned DevOps I think the real key there is the developer really wants to have the application be infrastructure aware and he needs good information coming from not 50 places but from a trusted place where he can make sure the application knows about how all the infrastructure that's supporting it no matter where it is is behaving and that's really the wind behind the sales driving our business we grew quarter-over-quarter sequentially with our subscription over a hundred percent in q1 so we're really thrilled with where the business is headed excited about the momentum and this is a really important partnership for us because everybody uses Cisco all of our enterprise customer service provider government customers Cisco is embedded in virtually every customer that we work with so we have to have the best support kind of that thought leadership of support for our customers for them to entrust management of those core applications through our platform right it gives a quick plug for the data center networking group what's happening there what's the the hot items what's the with give the plug quickly so very quickly I think the journey that we have been on is a CI any where to take a CI and its management and operations paradigm to many different environments we introduced support for AWS earlier in this year we are working on support for Azure and soon we'll have support for Google public clouds in all these environments we want our customers to have consistent experience and the way we get that is through solutions working with partners where we offer consistent solutions across all these environments for our customers and working with science logic as a very important partner to solve problems for our joint customers and you guys have always had a great Channel great ecosystem now you have not new for you to partner yeah we have like open API is open platform 65 plus partners that we work with so all customer focus well let me put you on the spot one last question got you here because your guru and networking and you know you've been around the block you've seen the different waves what's the biggest wake-up call that customers are having with respect to the old way of doing networking and the new way cuz clearly everyone has come to the realization that the perimeter based security model and static networking has to be more dynamic what's the big wake-up call that you think customers are seeing now with this new modern era I think customers are realizing more and more how important technologies part of it as part of their business sometimes it even drives the techni drives the business and helps customers make ditions on what's the right path to take for their business so what this applications become really important and the nerve center which is the network that supports the application becomes really important so customers are demanding us to build the best network possible to support this modern world that's continuously evolving so did you think a stab at that customer wake-up call what's your perspective on this what's the big R from your experience over the years you can't use tools that were built 20 years ago to continue operating global networks so we see a lot of the industry it's about a ten billion dollar total addressable market changing over because the market fit of the old tools that people have relied upon for many years aren't solving modern problems Oh How's the show going for you? >> Show's going really good. I just had a chance to walk around the booths and a lot of interesting conversations and, the Red Hat booth too, there've been a lot of interesting conversations with customers. >> A lot of tailwinds these days for Red Hat. We talk about that a lot on theCUBE, this whole notion of hybrid cloud, you guys have been on that since the early days. >> Yeah. >> Multi-cloud, omni-cloud, hyper-converged infrastructure, it's in your title. It's like that all the moons are lining up for you guys, you know is it just luck, skill, great predictions powers, what's your take? >> Well, I mean, I think it's a combination of those, but more importantly, it's about listening to our customers. I think that's what gives us, today, the permission to talk to our customers about some of these things they're doing, because when we talk to them, it's not just about solving today's problems, but also where they're headed, and anticipating where they're going, and the ability to meet their needs. So is, I think. >> So the Google partnership, we were talking earlier, it started 10 years ago with the hypervisor. >> Yup. >> And it's really evolved. Where is it today, from your perspective? >> Well, I think it continues to, it continues to cooperate in the technical community very well, and a couple of data points, one is on Kubernetes, that started four, five years ago, and that's going really strong. But more importantly, as the industry matures, there are, what I would call, special interest groups that are starting to emerge in the Kubernetes community. One thing that we are paying very close attention to is the storage SIG, which is the ability to federate storage across multiple clouds, and how do you do it seamlessly within the framework of Kubernetes, as opposed to trying to create a hack, or a one-off that some vendors attempted to do. So we try to take a very wholistic view of it, and make sure, I mean the industry we are in is trying to drive volumes, and volumes drives standards, so I think we pay very, very close attention-- >> And the objective there is leave the data in place if possible, provide secure access and fast access, provide high-speed data movement if necessary, protect the data in motion. That is a complex problem. >> It is, and that's why I think it's very important that the community together solves the problem, not just one vendor. But it's about how do you facilitate, the holy grail is how do you facilitate data portability and application portability across these hybrid clouds. And a lot of the things that you talked about are part and parcel of that, but what users don't wanna do is stitch them together. They want a simple, easy way. And most common example that we often get asked is can I migrate my data from one cloud to the other, from on-prem to a public cloud beta based on certain policies. That's a prototypical example of how federated storage and other things can help with that. >> Ranga, bring us inside some of those customer conversations, 'cause we talk on theCUBE, we go back to, customers always say I want multi-vendor, yes, I don't want lock-in, portability is a good thing, but at the end of the day, some of these things, if it's some science experiment or if it's difficult, well, sometimes it's easier just to kind of stick on a similar environment. We know the core of Red Hat, it's if I build on top of rail, then I know it can work lots of places, so where are customers at, how does that fit in to this whole discussion of multi-cloud. >> So, what I can kind of give you a perspective of the hybrid cloud, the product strategy that we've been on for better part of a decade now, is around facilitating the hybrid cloud. So if you look at the open, or the storage nature of the data nature of the conversations, it's almost two sides of the same coin. Which is, the developers want storage to be invisible. They don't wanna be in the business of stitching their lungs and their zone masking all that stuff. But yet at the same time they want storage to be ubiquitous. So, they want it to be invisible, they want it to be ubiquitous. So that's one of the key themes that we are in from our customer. >> Come on, Ranga, you guys are announcing storage list this year, right? >> Yeah, (laughs) exactly. (laughs) So that's a great point. The other part that we are also seeing from our customer conversations is, I think, let me give you, kind of the Red Hat inside out perspective. Is any products, any thing that we release to the market, the first filter that we run through is will it help our customers with our open hybrid cloud journey? So that kind of becomes the filter for any new features we add, any go-to-market motion, so that there is a tremendous amount of impedance match if you will. Between where we're going and how customers can succeed with their open hybrid cloud journey. >> So, in thinking about some of the discussions you're having with customers on their hybrid cloud strategy, specifically, what are those conversations like, what are the challenges that they're having? It's a maturity spectrum, obviously, but what are you seeing at each level of the spectrum, and where are some of those execution, formulation and execution challenges? >> So, as the industry evolves and the technology matures, the conversation change, and 12, 24 months ago it was a dramatically different conversation. It was an all around help me get there. Now the conversation is people really understand, and most of our conversations that we see, and even the other industry players are seeing this, is the conversation starts with on-prem looking out, as opposed to a cloud looking in. So, customers say look I've invested a tremendous amount of assets, intellectual horsepower into building my on-prem infrastructure and make it solid, now give me the degree of freedom for me to move certain workloads to one or many of these public clouds. So that's kind of a huge shift in the conversations we have with the customers. If you click one or a couple of levels below, the conversation talks about things like security as you pointed out. How do you ensure that if I move my workload my overall corporate compliance stuff aren't anywhere compromised. So that's one aspect. The other aspect is manageability. Can it really manage this infrastructure from a proverbial single pane of glass. So now the conversations are less about more theoretical, it's more about I've started the journey help me make this journey successful. >> So when you talk about the perspective of, I've built up this on-prem infrastructure, I've invested a ton it in, and now help me connect, I can see a mindset that would say think cloud first. Of course, the practical reality says I've got all this tactical debt. So how much of that is gonna be a potential pitfall down the road for some of these companies, in your view? >> Well, I think it's not so much of a technical debt. In one way you could call it a technical debt, but the other aspect is how do you really leverage the investment that you've made without having to just say well I'm gonna do things differently. So, that's why I think the conversations we have with our customers are mutually beneficial, because we can help them, but the same token they can help us understand where some of the road blocks are. And through our products, through our services, we can help them circumvent or mitigate some of those-- >> And those assets aren't depreciated on the books, they've gotta get a return on them, right? >> So, Ranga, we know that one of the areas that Red Hat and Google end up working a lot together is in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation. >> Yep. >> Bring us up to speed as to where we are with that storage discussion, 'cause I think back to when Docker launched it was oh, it's gonna be wonderful and everything, but we all live through virtualization, and we had to fix networking and storage challenges here, and networking seemed to go a little further along and there's been a few different viewpoints as to how storage should be looked at in the containerized and the Kubernetes SDO world that we're moving towards today. >> So one example that illustrates storage being the center of this is there is a project called Rook.io. If you're familiar with this, think of it as kind of sitting between the storage infrastructure and Kubernetes. And that is taking on a tremendous amount of traction, not just in the community, but even within the CNCF. I could be wrong here, but my understanding it's a project that's in incubation phase right now. So we are seeing a lot of industry commitment to that Rook project, and you're gonna see real, live use cases where customers are now able to fulfill the vision of data portability and storage portability across these multiple hybrid clouds. >> So Kubernetes is obviously taking off, although again, it's a maturity level. Some customers are diving in, and others maybe not so much. What are you seeing is some of the potential blockers, how are people getting started? Can you just download the code and go? What are you seeing there? >> That's a very interesting question, because we look at it as projects versus products. And, Kubernetes is a project. Phenomenal amount of velocity, phenomenal amount of innovation. But once you deploy it in your production environment, things like security, things like life cycle management, all those things have to be in place before somebody deploys it. That's why, in OpenShift you've seen the tremendous amount of market acceptance we've have with OpenShift is a proof point that it is kind of the best Kubernetes out there, because it's enterprise ready, people can deploy it, people can use it, people can scale with it, and not be worried about things like life cycle management, things like security, all the things that come into play when you deal with an upstream project. So, what we've seen from a customer basis, people start to dabble, and they'll look at Kubernetes, what's going on, and understand where the areas of innovation are. But once they start to say look I've got it deployed for some serious workloads, they look at a vendor who can provide all the necessary ingredients for them to be successful. >> We're having a good discussion earlier about customer's perspectives, I wanna get as much out of that asset as I possibly can. You said something that interested me. I wanna go back to it. Is customers want options to be able to migrate to various clouds. My question is do you sense that that's because they wanna manage their risk, they want an exit strategy? Or, are they actively moving more than once. Maybe they wanna go once and then run in the cloud. Or are you seeing a lot of active movement of that data? >> I think the first order of bit in those discussions that are about the workloads, What workload do they wanna run? And once they decide this is the, for instance, with the Google Cloud, with the MLAI type of workloads, lend themselves very well to the Google Cloud infrastructure. So when a customer says look this is the workload I wanna run on-prem, but I want the elastic capability for me to run on one of these public clouds, often the decision criteria seems to be what workload it is and where's the best place to run it in. And then, you know, the rest of the stuff comes into play. >> So, Ranga, let's step back for a second. I come out of this show, Google Cloud this year, and I'm hearing open, multi-cloud, reminds me of words I've heard going to Red Hat, some every year. Help us to kind of squint through a little bit as to where Red Hat sits in the customer. If I'm the c-suite of an enterprise customer day, where Red Hat fits in the partnership with customers, and where the partners fit into that overall story. >> So, our view is let's look at it customer end. And practically every customer that we talk to wants to embark on an open hybrid cloud storage. And I wanna kind of stress on the open part of it, because it's the easier way to say okay let me go build a hybrid cloud. The more difficult part is how do you facilitate it through open hybrid cloud story. And that's the march, if you will, that we've been on for the last five plus years. And, that business strategy and the technology strategy has not, we've been unwavering in that. And, the partners are and they say we truly believe that for us to be successful, for our customers to be successful, we need an ecosystem of partners. And the cloud providers are absolutely a critical ingredient and a critical component of the overall strategy, and I think together, with our partners, and our core technology, and our go-to-market routes, we think we can really solve our customers, we are solving them today, and we think we can continue to solve them over time. >> You talk about open, open has a lot of different definitions. And again it's suspected UNIX used to be open. (laughs) I see that potentially as one, real solid differentiator of Red Hat. I mean, your philosophy on open. What do you see as your differentiators in the marketplace? >> Well, I think the first is obviously open like you said, the second part is, I think I hinted upon it earlier, which is, projects are good. I think they are almost a fountain and of ideas and things, but I think where we spend a tremendous amount of hours of energy is to transform it from the upstream project into a product. And if you go back, Red Hat Linux, I think we've shown that Linux was in the same kind of state of vibe in other ways, 10, 20 years ago. And I think what we've shown to the industry is by being solely committed and focused on make these projects enterprise ready, I think we've shown the market leading the way, and making it successful. So I think for us, the next wave, whether it's Kubernetes, whether it's other things, it's a very similar recipe book, nothing dramatically different, but fundamentally what we want to do is help our customers take advantage of those innovations, but yet not compromise on what they need in their enterprise data centers. >> The recipe book is similar, but you've gotta make bets. You've made some pretty good bets over the years. >> Yep. >> We could debate about OpenStack, but I mean, even there. But that's not an easy thing for an open source company to do. 'Cause you've gotta pick your poison, you have to provide committers, what's the secret sauce there? >> Well, I think, first off, I think the number one secret sauce from our perspective is add more technical and intellectual horsepower to these communities. And, not so much for the sake of community, it's about does it solve a real business problem for our customers? That's the way we go about it because in the open source community, I don't even know, hundreds of thousands of open source projects are out there. And we pay, and our office of the CTO pays very close attention to all the projects out there, identify the ones that have promise, not just from our perspective but from customers' perspective, and invest in those areas. And a lot of them have succeeded, so we think we'll do well in that. >> Alright, so, Ranga, one of the biggest announcements this week is Anthos from Google. Wanna get your viewpoint as to where that fits. >> I think it's a good announcement, I haven't read through all the details, but part of it is I think it validates, to a certain extent, what Red Hat has been talking about for the last five, seven years. Which is you need a unified way to deploy, manage, provision your infrastructure, not just on public clouds, but a seamless way to connect to the on-prem. And I think Anthos is a validation of how we've been thinking about the work. So we think it's great. exclusive coverage I'm John for the coast of the Q with John Troy you're my Coast analyst as we blues co-founder of tech reckoning advisory and Community Development firm meniscus is ranked at Rangachari vice president general manager Red Hat storage for you to see you again welcome back to the cube thank you thank you invited me again so Steve a lot they said storage is where all the action is with wellness data to be stored somewhere with the cloud yeah it's still important you guys have a new concept yeah on storage yeah I'm storage what is the unstirred you know I think essentially when we got into the storage business the status quo was your traditional storage mainframe so wheeling a piece of gear and it's to scale up and have things workloads running there but with the movement towards cloud especially with hybrid cloud where you really can't take a physical box and move it into a public cloud and in the last year or so with containers the common theme that's emerging is things like agility things like scale things like almost having ubiquitous storage all around the place is becoming more and more important so our thought is it almost turns a storage the phenomenal storage industry upside down on its head because the things that people cared about decade ago on the workloads are no longer relevant or less relevant than where they are today so and you know it seems to be people seem to get it so we're pretty I mean we've seen the strain on servers server less storage less so in a way this the recent resource pool is not just you know a box and provision the LUNs more like okay I need storage exact a button I don't care where it comes from is that we're kind of getting to somebody that's exactly what it is right I think in a in a different way right one of the customers said I want storage to be everywhere but nowhere right in that they want storage to be a pervasive but it has to be invisible so they don't have to worry about things like zoning and LAN masking on one piece hardware and do the same thing with twenty other pieces what our solution offers offers is truly a scalable storage platform that's running on any kind of footprint physical virtual private a public cloud but it's a common user experience across all these different footprints and that's why and the other part of this thing which is also different is yes it does appeal to the storage admins but more importantly as you become as organizations of all the cloud architects and DevOps know what they care about is like I want storage to be as invisible as possible but yet I want to make the devil developers more and more productive so I think we are I feel really right track in appealing to how storage needs to be viewed it's a no brainer in my mind if you're DevOps you want to go total cloud horizontally scalable you need gel apps stores just to be available programmable all that's great stuff question I have for you is what's the impact of customers who have been buying boxes for decades so what's the impact of them with Red Hat so I'm still gonna need boxes and still gonna put them somewhere and so it's an on-prem cloud operation so I still need storage bits cloud obviously those guys have their own storage but I mean but you still gotta plug it in and put storage in sure what's the impact of the customer well I think they I mean we do we are practical enough and we rarely realize that no customer is gonna pull the plug one day and move on to the next infrastructure what we are seeing more and more is as those new workloads which are dramatically different the previous workloads as they come into play then they have to rethink how they develop deploy provisioned storage infrastructure so that's where we come in so it's not about in either/or it's about how do you are meant your existing storage infrastructure but think about it in a modern way think about how you can future-proof your architectures so that it scales so that's the way we think about it wrong how should people be thinking about storage at different levels of the architecture there's actually a lot of storage here there's been a lot of sessions and the ecosystem expo there's a lot of storage providers but you've got the we've been talking a lot about open shift and an open shift on OpenStack here at the show this is this year so if you're at the OpenStack lair versus on the open shift layer how should you be thinking about storage and and what and what products are plugging in at those layers yes so you know think with OpenShift a couple of days ago earlier this week we announced our 150 customers we're actually deploying our product which is called containing nearly storage CNS for short and what that does is it enables it's essentially the storage infrastructure for open shaft so wherever open ship goes the storage footprint follows along whether you're running it on Prem on top of virtualized infrastructure or you're running any of these public clouds and the most interesting part of that is you know getting back to the earlier conversation we try to make it as invisible as possible so you we as vendors don't have to say you've got to deploy it here so make it as invisible as possible and as seamless as possible now with OpenStack it's a different set of experience because that's kind of infrastructure up right and the advantage for us is if you look at the OpenStack community in general almost 70% of the OpenStack community in one way shape or form uses a safe project so it's almost become I wouldn't call it almost de facto standard on how people manage the storage infrastructure with an open stack but even there the cardinal rules are still the same which is when they think about spinning up a machine the storage has to be attached automatically to it and then scale as their computer in the storage infrastructure scales and this the scale is the question we're living in a new era of cloud economics scale is key and we here the customers here Red Hat Red Hat's customers talking about things like horizontally scalable asynchronous micro sets of micro services levels of granularity this is the programmable new fabric that is a new infrastructure of the Internet you know 30 year old statuses from e-commerce DNS they're you know gonna be abstracted away with a new abstraction layer yes hello opens yes hello you know new things kubernetes and in containers so with that being said there's an opportunity yes so when you that's kind of like the state of the yard now but you're welcome to an enterprise like what's kubernetes again so you got some enterprises are learning about kubernetes and it's good news for them learning about containers where they don't have to throw away anything you just containerize it how is that impacting the classic definition of software-defined datacenter yeah and software-defined storage because those are the two important trends that have been happening in Software Defined does it accelerate it does it change it a little bit what's your thoughts on those do you know I think it accelerates it and here's why that's a great question right because when you look at organizations especially in the container era right where there are certain companies who are actually I would argue even bypassing you know and building it container first strategy as opposed to a cloud first strategy right so that's that's the way they are thinking about this and when you talk about route through that lens storage essentially is an application as opposed to infrastructure so you have to talk as three or you have to talk whatever protocol it is so it just becomes part and parcel of that so the challenge or what vendors or customers are looking at us is how can you make it as seamless as possible so that they can get the acceleration can happen because a year ago I think nine months ago there was a survey that was done where customers said the top two issues with moved to accelerated move the containers were storage or persistent storage and security well I think we have a firm handle on what we need to do to really help our customers at least address the storage part of that discussion what's up what and what's the make of the use cases right now how many customers are deploying this roughly order of magnitude mean let's go into details but I mean you know you know how's the migration okay the early adopters and in mode now is it fast followers is it the rest of the market I think it's still in the early adoption in the truest definition I think you know using the baseball analogy we're at the top of the first inning right and most of the workloads tend to be new workloads right there are some left cloud native but there's some but as far as the use cases it is you know across the board you know no sequel databases see I see Dee Jenkins type of environment so we surprised vertical centric either because storage your Stora just used by everybody yes there is one layer where there's certain I is free apps that tend to be focused on certain verticals but they happen right by our availability or I ah she might need financial services or stretch clusters and all those kinds of things okay cool I love the concept of unstitch but that does leave in the cold a little bit the people that we used to call storage admins right so now multi cloud hybrid cloud a lot of examples and blood demonstration operators operators done does the job of the storage the person you who used to be in charge of storage it seems like that that changes now even with unstitch a lot of automation a lot of fabric a lot of pooling does it itself but you still are on a lot of different clouds and things like that how do you how are you talking to customers about that so you know I think one of the I think the term that people have started to use as generalists right if you look at it you know five years ago or seven years ago you had a silo of systems administrators storage administrators and network administrators now the whole vertical store the silos have been in a way normalized so now you have a pool of people might be the major is in storage but the minor is a networking by the major isn't compute their minor is in storage so it really helped her all the organizations that we talked to now they say look I have a collective pool that can help me where I need to get to so this plays really well what about that audience absolutely it does and the hybrid cloud equation in your thoughts there cuz lastly we'll keep on did a great piece of research on true private cloud and there and they are looking for more folks to first rating the next set of surveys so I'd love to introduce you to the Peter verse over there but the point is was true private cloud report showed that on-premise cloud if occasion whatever you want to call it action was much higher and growing it's not so much on premise has been dying or being reduced its transitioning to on-premise cloud operations which is essentially cloud it's a fat edge or you know and the cloud is that what is the cloud so you're seeing still a lot of work being done on premises where there we recasting reimagining cloud so how is that impacting the hybrid cloud because I've been cause it's not really a product it's a yes it's a journey it's a connection between two clouds so storage data the data plane control planes are all kind of like evolving your thoughts on multi cloud and as hybrid starts to accelerate that's the path I'll see open shift but your thoughts on so the I think the way we think about this right is hybrid cloud it's not so much that everything is running on app I absolutely agree with the research right but the customers that we talk to they are still building the foundational business on I got a you know keep the private cloud make it as seamless and as efficient as possible but there are certain workloads that lend themselves well to running on a public cloud now it's not so much as a disjointed these two universes never talk to each other it's how do we the Red Hat try to bring the two together so the user experience you almost in a way try to minimize where it actually runs right now so that's that's an open shift is a classic example of that right where you're running it on Prem but you're also running on these public clouds if certain workloads that are great on a public cloud an example of that is one of the largest airports and Europe so they use OpenShift on Prem but they also use OpenShift on a couple of other public clouds and our CNS product which is a continuous tourist product run runs along all those three environments so to the end-user it's essentially a seamless experience and that's you know as the journey unfolds I think that's what you're going to see more and more is about how do we start to know that the storage foundation is built how do we start to exposed some data services that can run across all these different that's gonna be killer so here's an update in the business how's the business what's the road map looked like what are the things that you guys are working on what's the priorities so business is like we announced on Monday 150 net new customers over the last 12 months and that's just on one specific strategic imperative which is containing native storage or help the customers with a container journey besides that I think there are two other pillars we are focused on one is around hybrid cloud right which is how do you really provide the best storage substrate for customers building private clouds and hybrid clouds and the third part is hyperconvergence because I think what our customers are asking for is they've seen the power of hyperconvergence but they want an open-source variant of hyperconvergence for their environment and stay tuned on that front we got some exciting stuff going on and we'll keep you folks updated on the final question what's going on the show here for you what's notable but the folks that are watching who couldn't make it here what's the vibe what's the hall way conversation what's the customer conversate with steer some color of what's happening here at breadhead summit here in san francisco so a lot of things but then I wish we had time but I know we're short of time here but the few things I want to highlight one is all the technology demos that we did yesterday today and some in the tomorrow or tomorrow timeframe you'll see are containing native storage or a storage portfolio be an integral part of every one of the teams that we are talking about so that's you know and we've got very positive feedback on that we have over two dozen text sessions and my
