Today, full day, a content coming your way. We've got one of our alumni back with us. Neil MacDonald joins us, the executive vice president and general manager of Compute at HPD Neale, Great to have you back on the Cube. >>It's great to be back. And how cool is it to be able to do this face to face again instead of on zoom. Right. So >>great. Great. The keynote yesterday absolutely packed, so refreshing to see that many people eager to hear what HP has been doing. It's been three years since we've all gotten together in person. >>It is, and we've been busy. We've been busy. We've got to share some great news yesterday about some of the work that we're doing with HB Green Lake Cloud Platform and really bringing together all the capabilities across the company in a very unified, cohesive way to enable our customers to embrace that as a service experience we committed to Antonio three years ago, said we were gonna deliver everything we do as a company as a service through Green Lake and we've done it. And it's fantastic to see the momentum that that's really building and how it's breaking down the silos from different types of infrastructure and offer to really create integrated solutions for our customers. So that's been a lot of fun. >>Give us the scope of your role, your areas of responsibility. And then I'd love to hear some feedback. You've been a couple of days here around customers. What some of the feedback help us understand that. >>So at HP, I lead the Compute business, which is our largest business. That includes our hardware and software and services in the compute space. Both, um, what flows through the green late model, but also what throws flows through a traditional purchase model. So, um, that's, uh, that's about $13 billion business for the company and the core of so much of what we do, and it's a real honour to be leading a business that's such a a legacy in a franchise with with 30 years of innovation for our customers in an ocean of followers. Um and it's great to be able to start to share some of the next chapters in that with our customers this week. >>Well, it's almost half the business H p e and as we've talked about, it's an awesome time to be in the computer business. What are you seeing in terms of the trends? Obviously you're all in on as a service. But some customers say, Tell me I got a lot of capital. Yeah, absolutely. I'm fine with Capex. What are you hearing from customers in that regard? And presumably you're happy to sell them in a kind of Capex model? >>Absolutely. And in the current environment, in particular with with some of the economic headwinds that we're starting to stare down here, it's really important for organisations to continue to transform digitally but to be able to match their investments with the revenues as they're building new services and new capabilities. And for some organisations, the challenge of investing all the Capex up front is a big lift and there's quite a delay before they can really monetise all of that. So the power of HP Green Lake is enabling them to match their investment in the infrastructure on a pay as you go basis with the actual revenue they're going to generate from their new capability. So for lots of people that works. But for many other customers, it's it's much more palatable to continue in a Capex purchase, but and we're delighted to do that. A lot of my business still is in that mode. What's changing the or what are the needs, whether you're in the green light environment or in the Capex environment? Um, increasingly, the edge has become a bigger and bigger part of all of our worlds, right, the edges where we all live and work. We've all seen over the last couple of years enormous change in how that work experience and how the shape of businesses has changed, and that creates some challenges for infrastructure. So one of the things that we've announced and we shared some more details of this week is HP Green Light for Computer Ops Management, which is a location agnostic, cloud based management set up that enables you to automate and lifecycle, manage your physical compute infrastructure wherever it lies, so that might be in a distributed environment in hotel locations or out at the edge for so much more data is now being gathered and has to be computed on. So we're really excited about that. And the great thing is because it's fully integrated with HP. Green Light Cloud Platform is in there alongside the storage, alongside the connectivity alongside all the other capabilities. And we can bring those together in a very cohesive infrastructure view for our customers and then build workloads and services and tops. And that's that's really exciting. How have >>your customer conversations evolved, especially over the last couple of years as the edge has exploded? But we've been living in such uncertain times. Are you seeing a change there in the stakeholders rising up the C suite stack in terms of how do we really fine tune this? Because we've got to be competitive. We've got to be a data company. >>Well, that's so true because everybody has seen seen data as a currency and is desperately innovating and Modernising their business model, and with it, the underlying infrastructure and how they think about development. And nowhere is that truer than in enterprises that really becoming digital. First, organisations more and more companies are doing their own in house full stack, cloud native development and pivoting hard from a more traditional view of in house enterprise i t. And in that regard, >>let's >>start to look a lot like a Saas company or a service provider in terms of the needs of the infrastructure you want linear performance scaling. You want to be very sensitive not just to the cost, as you call it, but also to the environmental cost and the power efficiency. And so yesterday we were really thrilled to announce the HBP Reliant are all 300 General Live in, which is the first of our general living platforms. And that's in partnership with Ampere is the first of several things that we're gonna go do together. We're looking forward to building out the rest of our Gen 11 portfolio broadly with all of our industry partners in the in the coming quarters. But we're thrilled about the feedback that we're starting to get from some of our customers about the gains in power efficiency that they're getting from using this new server line that we've developed with amber. >>So, you know, this is an area that I'm very interested in what I write about this a lot. So tell us the critical aspects of Gen 11, where ampere fits, is it is it being used for primarily offloads and there's a core share with us. So >>if you look at the opportunity here is really as a core compute tool for organisations that are doing that in house full snack cloud native development and in that environment, being able to do it with great power efficiency at a great cost point is the great combination. The maturity of the ecosystem, um, is really, really improving to the point where is much, much more accessible for those loads? And if you consider how the infrastructure evolves underneath it, the gains that you get from power efficiency multiply. It's a TCO benefit. It's obviously an environmental benefit, and we all have much, much more to do as an industry on that journey. But every little helps, and we're really excited about being able to bring that to market. The other thing that we've done is recognising the value that we bring in the prelim experience, everything with our integrated lights out management, all of the security, the, uh, hardware root of trust, the secure boot chains, all of that Reliant family values we brought to that platform, just as we do with our others. But we've also recognised that for some of our service provider customers, there's a lot of interest in leveraging open BMC and being able to integrate the management plane and control that in house and tie it to whatever orchestrations being done in the service product. So we have full support for open BMC out of the box out of the gate with Janna Levin. And that's one of the ways that we're evolving. Are offering to meet our customers where they are, including not just the assassin service providers but the enterprises who are starting to adopt more and more of those practises as they build out digital. First, >>tell us more about the architecture. If you would kneel. I mean, so where does ampere and that partnership add value? That's incremental to what you what you might think is a traditional server architecture. How's that evolving? >>Well, it's another alternative for certain workloads in that full stack in house proud Native Development model. Um, it's another choice. It's another option and something that's very excited about >>That's the right course for the horse, for the course that was back in internal development because it's just more efficient. It's lower power, more sustainable. All those things exactly. >>And the wonderful thing for us in the uh in this juncture in the market is there is so much architectural innovation. There are so many innovators out there in the industry creating different optimizations in technology with the lesson silicon or other aspects of the system. And that gives us a much broader palette to paint from as we meet our customers' needs as their businesses involving the requirements are evolving, we can be much more creative as we bring this all together. It's a real thrill to be able to bring some of these technologies into the HP reliant space because we've always felt that compute matters. We've always known that hardware matters, and we've been leading and innovating and meeting these needs as they've evolved over the decades, and it's really fun to be able to continue to do that. Hardware still >>matters. It doesn't matter. We know that here on the Cube, talk about the influence of the customer with so much architectural innovation. There's a lot of choice for customers in every industry. When you're in customer conversations, how are you helping them make decisions? One of the key differentiators that you articulate that's going to really help them achieve outcomes that they have to achieve? >>Well, I think that's exactly as you say. It's about the outcome. Too often, I think the conversation can get down into the lower level details of component, tree and technology and our philosophy. HP has always been focused on what it is that the customer is trying to achieve. How are they trying to serve their customers? What are their needs? And then we can bring an opinionated point of view on the best way to solve that problem, whether that's recommendations on the particular Capex, infrastructure and architecture to build or increasingly, the opportunity to serve that through HP Green Lake, either as hard or as a service. Or is HP Green Lake services further up the stack? Because when you start talking about what is the outcome you're trying to achieve, you have you have a much, much better opportunity to focus the technology to serve the business and not get wrapped up in managing the infrastructure and that's what we love to do. >>So where? Give us the telescope vision. Maybe not to tell a binocular vision as to where compute is going. We're clearly seeing more diversity in silicon. Uh, it's not just a you know x 86 CPU world anymore. There's all these other supporting components new workloads coming in. Where do you you mentioned Edge, whole new ballgame ai inference sing. And that was kind of new workloads, offloads and things of that. Where do you see it all going in the next 3 to 5 years? >>I think it's gonna be really, really exciting time because more and more of our data is getting captured to the edge. And because of the experiences that companies are trying to deliver and organisations are trying to deliver that requires more and more stories are more and more compute at the edge. The edge is not just about connectivity, and again, that's why with the F B green light cloud platform, the power of bringing together the connectivity with the compute with the storage with the other capabilities in that integrated way gives us the ability to serve that combined need at the edge in a very, very compelling way. The room moves a lot of friction and a lot of work for our customers. But as you see that happen, you're going to see more and more combining of functionalities. The silos are going to start to break down between different classes of building block in the data centre, and you've already seen shifts with more and more software to find more and more hybrid offerings running across a computing substrate. But perhaps delivering storage services are analytic services or other workloads, and you're gonna see that to conduct that continue to evolve. So it's gonna be very fun over the next few years to see that, uh, that diversification and a much more opinionated set of offers for particular use cases and workloads and at our job and value is going to be simplifying that complexity because choices great right up to the point where you're paralysed by too many choices. So the wonderful thing about the world that's been done here is that we're able to bring that opinionated point of view and help guide, and again it's all about starting with what are you trying to achieve. What are the outcomes you're trying to deliver? And if you start there were having a great time helping our customers find the right path forward. >>Wow, it sounds like a fun job. Talk to me about, you know, maybe one of your favourite examples that you really think articulates the value of of the choice and the opportunities that HP can deliver to customers, maybe favourite customer example where you think we really nailed it here and they're achieving some incredible outcomes. >>Well, we're really excited about this week as I was chatting with the CEO of Cloud Sigma, which is a global ideas and pass provider who's actually been using our new HP per client moral 300 general live in Are you on purpose? Server line? And, uh, their CEO was reporting to me yesterday that based on his benchmarking, they're seeing a significant improvement in power efficiency, and that's that's that's cool to an engineer. But what's even better is the next thing, he said. That's enabling them to deliver better cost to their customers and advanced their sustainability goals, which is such a core part of what we as an industry and we as society are going to have to continue to make stepwise progress against over the next decade in order to confront those challenges in the environment so that that's that's really fulfilling, not just to see the tech, which is always interesting to an engineer but actually see the impact that it's having an enabling that outcome foreclosed signal >>so many customers, including Cloud Sigma and customers in every industry. E S G is an incredibly important initiative. And so it's vital for companies that have a core focus on E. S G to partner with companies like HP who will help them facilitate that actually demonstrate outcomes to their own users. >>It's such an important journey and it's gonna be a journey of many steps together. But I think it's one of the most critical partnerships that as an industry and as an ecosystem, we still have a lot of work to do and we have to stay focused on it every day, continuing, moving the bar. >>You >>know, to your point about E. S G. You see these E s G reports. Now that they're unbelievable, the data that is in them and the responsibility that organisations mid and large organisations have to actually publish that and be held accountable. It's actually kind of daunting, but there's a lot of investments going on there. You're absolutely right. The >>accountability is key, and it's it's it's necessary to have an accountability partner and ecosystem that can facilitate that. Exactly. >>We just published last week our Own Living Progress report this year, talking about some of the steps that we're making the commitments that we pulled in in time. Um, and we're looking forward to continue to work on that with our customers and with the industry, because it's so critical that we make faster progress together on that >>last question. What's your favourite comment that you've heard the last couple of days being back in person with about 8000 customers, partners and execs? It's >>not. It's not the common. It's the sparkles in the eyes. It's the energy. It is so great to be back together, face to face. I think we, uh, we've soldiered through a couple of tough years. We've done a lot of things remotely together, but there's no substitute for being back together, and the energy is just palpable and it's it's fantastic to be able to share some of what we've been up to in the interim and see the excitement about getting adopted by customers and partners. >>I agree the energy has been fantastic. I got a power panel here, Lisa Martin, with Dave Valante, John furrier, Holger Mueller also joins us. We are gonna wrap this, like you've never seen a rap before guys. Lot of momentum today, lot, lot of excitement, about 8,000 or so customers, partners, HPE leaders here. Holger. Let's go ahead and start with you. What are some of the things that you heard felt saw observed today on day one? >>Yeah, it's great to be back in person. Right? 8,000 people events are rare. Uh, I'm not sure. Have you been to more than 8,000? <laugh> yeah, yeah. Okay. This year, this year. I mean, historically, yes, but, um, >>Snowflake was 10. Yeah. >>So, oh, wow. Okay. So 8,000 was my, >>Cisco was, they said 15, >>But is my, my 8,000, my record, I let us down with 7,000 kind of like, but it's in the Florida swarm. It's not nicely. Like, and there's >>Usually what SFI, there's usually >>20, 20, 30, 40, 50. I remember 50 in the nineties. Right. That was a different time. But yeah. Interesting. Yeah. Interesting what people do and it depends how much time there is to come. Right. And know that it happens. Right. But yeah, no, I think it's interesting. We, we had a good two analyst track today. Um, interesting. Like HPE is kind of like back not being your grandfather's HPE to a certain point. One of the key stats. I know Dave always for the stats, right. Is what I found really interesting that over two third of GreenLake revenue is software and services. Now a love to know how much of that services, how much of that software. But I mean, I, I, I, provocate some, one to ones, the HP executives saying, Hey, you're a hardware company. Right. And they didn't even come back. Right. But Antonio said, no, two thirds is, uh, software and services. Right. That's interesting. They passed the one exabyte, uh, being managed, uh, as a, as a hallmark. Right. I was surprised only 120,000 users if I had to remember the number. Right, right. So that doesn't seem a terrible high amount of number of users. Right. So, but that's, that's, that's promising. >>So what software is in there, cuz it's gotta be mostly services. >>Right? Well it's the 70 plus cloud services, right. That everybody's talking about where the added eight of them shockingly back up and recovery, I thought that was done at launch. Right. >>Still who >>Keep recycling storage and you back. But now it's real. Yeah. >>But the company who knows the enterprise, right. HPE, what I've been doing before with no backup and recovery GreenLake. So that was kind of like, okay, we really want to do this now and nearly, and then say like, oh, by the way, we've been doing this all the time. Yeah. >>Oh, what's your take on the installed base of HP. We had that conversation, the, uh, kickoff or on who's their target, what's the target audience environment look like. It certainly is changing. Right? If it's software and services, GreenLake is resonating. Yeah. Um, ecosystems responding. What's their customers cuz managed services are up too Kubernetes, all the managed services what's what's it like what's their it transformation base look like >>Much of it is of course install base, right? The trusted 20, 30 plus year old HP customer. Who's keeping doing stuff of HP. Right. And call it GreenLake. They've been for so many name changes. It doesn't really matter. And it's kind of like nice that you get the consume pain only what you consume. Right. I get the cloud broad to me then the general markets, of course, people who still need to run stuff on premises. Right. And there's three reasons of doing this performance, right. Because we know the speed of light is relative. If you're in the Southern hemisphere and even your email servers in Northern hemisphere, it takes a moment for your email to arrive. It's a very different user experience. Um, local legislation for data, residency privacy. And then, I mean Charles Phillips who we all know, right. Former president of uh, info nicely always said, Hey, if the CIOs over 50, I don't have to sell qu. Right. So there is not invented. I'm not gonna do cloud here. And now I've kind of like clouded with something like HP GreenLake. That's the customers. And then of course procurement is a big friend, right? Yeah. Because when you do hardware refresh, right. You have to have two or three competitors who are the two or three competitors left. Right. There's Dell. Yeah. And then maybe Lenovo. Right? So, so like a >>Little bit channels, the strength, the procurement physicians of strength, of course install base question. Do you think they have a Microsoft opportunity where, what 365 was Microsoft had office before 365, but they brought in the cloud and then everything changed. Does HP have that same opportunity with kind of the GreenLake, you know, model with their existing stuff. >>It has a GreenLake opportunity, but there's not much software left. It's a very different situation like Microsoft. Right? So, uh, which green, which HP could bring along to say, now run it with us better in the cloud because they've been selling much of it. Most of it, of their software portfolio, which they bought as an HP in the past. Right. So I don't see that happening so much, but GreenLake as a platform itself course interesting because enterprise need a modern container based platform. >>I want, I want to double click on this a little bit because the way I see it is HP is going to its installed base. I think you guys are right on say, this is how we're doing business now. Yeah. You know, come on along. But my sense is, some customers don't want to do the consumption model. There are actually some customers that say, Hey, of course I got, I don't have a cash port problem. I wanna pay for it up front and leave me alone. >>I've been doing this since 50 years. Nice. As I changed it, now <laugh> two know >>Money's wants to do it. And I don't wanna rent because rental's more expensive and blah, blah, blah. So do you see that in the customer base that, that some are pushing back? >>Of course, look, I have a German accent, right? So I go there regularly and uh, the Germans are like worried about doing anything in the cloud. And if you go to a board in Germany and say, Hey, we can pay our usual hardware, refresh, CapEx as usual, or should we bug consumption? And they might know what we are running. <laugh> so not whole, no offense against the Germans out. The German parts are there, but many of them will say, Hey, so this is change with COVID. Right. Which is super interesting. Right? So the, the traditional boards non-technical have been hearing about this cloud variable cost OPEX to CapEx and all of a sudden there's so much CapEx, right. Office buildings, which are not being used truck fleets. So there's a whole new sensitivity by traditional non-technical boards towards CapEx, which now the light bulb went on and say, oh, that's the cloud thing about also. So we have to find a way to get our cost structure, to ramp up and ramp down as our business might be ramping up through COVID through now inflation fears, recession, fears, and so on. >>So, okay. HP's, HP's made the statement that anything you can do in the cloud you can do in GreenLake. Yes. And I've said you can't run on snowflake. You can't run Mongo Atlas, you can't run data bricks, but that's okay. That's fine. Let's be, I think they're talking about, there's >>A short list of things. I think they're talking about the, their >>Stuff, their, >>The operating experience. So we've got single sign on through a URL, right. Uh, you've got, you know, some level of consistency in terms of policy. It's unclear exactly what that is. You've got storage backup. Dr. What, some other services, seven other services. If you had to sort of take your best guess as to where HP is now and peg it toward where Amazon was in which year? >>20 14, 20 14. >>Yeah. Where they had their first conference or the second we invent here with 3000 people and they were thinking, Hey, we're big. Yeah. >>Yeah. And I think GreenLake is the building blocks. So they quite that's the >>Building. Right? I mean similar. >>Okay. Well, I mean they had E C, Q and S3 and SQS, right. That was the core. And then the rest of those services were, I mean, base stock was one of that first came in behind and >>In fairness, the industry has advanced since then, Kubernetes is further along. And so HPE can take advantage of that. But in terms of just the basic platform, I, I would agree. I think it's >>Well, I mean, I think, I mean the software, question's a big one. I wanna bring up because the question is, is that software is getting the world. Hardware is really software scales, everything, data, the edge story. I love their story. I think HP story is wonderful Aruba, you know, hybrid cloud, good story, edge edge. But if you look under the covers, it's weak, right? It's like, it's not software. They don't have enough software juice, but the ecosystem opportunity to me is where you plug and play. So HP knows that game. But if you look historically over the past 25 years, HP now HPE, they understand plug and play interoperability. So the question is, can they thread the needle >>Right. >>Between filling the gaps on the software? Yeah. With partners, >>Can they get the partners? Right. And which have been long, long time. Right. For a long time, HP has been the number one platform under ICP, right? Same thing. You get certified for running this. Right. I know from my own history, uh, I joined Oracle last century and the big thing was, let's get your eBusiness suite certified on HP. Right? Like as if somebody would buy H Oracle work for them, right. This 20 years ago, server >>The original exit data was HP. Oracle. >>Exactly. Exactly. So there's this thinking that's there. But I think the key thing is we know that all modern forget about the hardware form in the platforms, right? All modern software has to move to containers and snowflake runs in containers. You mentioned that, right? Yeah. If customers force snowflake and HPE to the table, right, there will be a way to make it work. Right. And which will help HPE to be the partner open part will bring the software. >>I, I think it's, I think that's an opportunity because that changes the game and agility and speed. If HP plays their differentiation, right. Which we asked on their opening segment, what's their differentiation. They got size scale channel, >>What to the enterprise. And then the big benefit is this workload portability thing. Right? You understand what is run in the public cloud? I need to run it local. For whatever reason, performance, local residency of data. I can move that. There that's the big benefit to the ISVs, the sales vendors as well. >>But they have to have a stronger data platform story in my that's right. Opinion. I mean, you can run Oracle and HPE, but there's no reason they shouldn't be able to do a deal with, with snowflake. I mean, we saw it with Dell. Yep. We saw it with, with, with pure and I, if our HPE I'd be saying, Hey, because the way the snowflake deal worked, you probably know this is your reading data into the cloud. The compute actually occurs in the cloud viral HB going snowflake saying we can separate compute and storage. Right. And we have GreenLake. We have on demand. Why don't we run the compute on-prem and make it a full class, first class citizen, right. For all of our customers data. And that would be really innovative. And I think Mongo would be another, they've got OnPrem. >>And the question is, how many, how many snowflake customers are telling snowflake? Can I run you on premise? And how much defo open years will they hear from that? Right? This is >>Why would they deal Dell? That >>Deal though, with that, they did a deal. >>I think they did that deal because the customer came to them and said, you don't exactly that deal. We're gonna spend the >>Snowflake >>Customers think crazy things happen, right? Even, even put an Oracle database in a Microsoft Azure data center, right. Would off who, what as >>Possible snowflake, >>Oracle. So on, Aw, the >>Snow, the snowflakes in the world have to make a decision. Dave on, is it all snowflake all the time? Because what the reality is, and I think, again, this comes back down to the, the track that HP could go up or down is gonna be about software. Open source is now the software industry. There's no such thing as proprietary software, in my opinion, relatively speaking, cloud scale and integrated, integrated integration software is proprietary. The workflows are proprietary. So if they can get that right with the partners, I would focus on that. I think they can tap open source, look at Amazon with open source. They sucked it up and they integrated it in. No, no. So integration is the deal, not >>Software first, but Snowflake's made the call. You were there, Lisa. They basically saying it's we have, you have to be in snowflake in order to get the governance and the scalability, all that other wonderful stuff. Oh, but we we'll do Apache iceberg. We'll we'll open it up. We'll do Python. Yeah. >>But you can't do it data clean room unless you are in snowflake. Exactly. Snowflake on snowflake. >>Exactly. >>But got it. Isn't that? What you heard from AWS all the time till they came out outposts, right? I mean, snowflake is a market leader for what they're doing. Right. So that they want to change their platform. I mean, kudos to them. They don't need to change the platform. They will be the last to change their platform to a ne to anything on premises. Right. But I think the trend already shows that it's going that way. >>Well, if you look at outpost is an signal, Dave, the success of outpost launched what four years ago, they announced it. >>What >>EKS is beating, what outpost is doing. Outpost is there. There's not a lot of buzz and talk to the insiders and the open source community, uh, EKS and containers. To your point mm-hmm <affirmative> is moving faster on, I won't say commodity hardware, but like could be white box or HP, Dell, whatever it's gonna be that scale differentiation and the edge story is, is a good one. And I think with what we're seeing in the market now it's the industrial edge. The back office was gen one cloud back office data center. Now it's hybrid. The focus will be industrial edge machine learning and AI, and they have it here. And there's some, some early conversations with, uh, I heard it from, uh, this morning, you guys interviewed, uh, uh, John Schultz, right? With the world economic 4k birth Butterfield. She was amazing. And then you had Justin bring up a Hoar, bring up quantum. Yes. That is a differentiator. >>HP. >>Yes. Yeah. You, they have the computing shops. They had the R and D can they bring it to the table >>As, as HPC, right. To what they Schultz for of uh, the frontier system. Right. So very impressed. >>So the ecosystem is the key for them is because that's how they're gonna fill the gaps. They can't, they can't only, >>They could, they could high HPC edge piece. I wouldn't count 'em out of that game yet. If you co-locate a box, I'll use the word box, particularly at a telco tower. That's a data center. Yep. Right. If done properly. Yep. So, you know, what outpost was supposed to do actually is a hybrid opportunity. Aruba >>Gives them a unique, >>But the key thing is right. It's a yin and yang, right? It's the ecosystem it's partners to bring those software workload. Absolutely. Right. But HPE has to keep the platform attractive enough. Right. And the key thing there is that you have this workload capability thing that you can bring things, which you've built yourself. I mean, look at the telcos right. Network function, visualization, thousands of man, years into these projects. Right. So if I can't bring it to your edge box, no, I'm not trying to get to your Xbox. Right. >>Hold I gotta ask you since in the Dave too, since you guys both here and Lisa, you know, I said on the opening, they have serious customers and those customers have serious problems, cyber security, ransomware. So yeah. I teach transformation now. Industrial transformation machine learning, check, check, check. Oh, sounds good. But at the end of the day, their customers have some serious problems. Right? Cyber, this is, this is high stakes poker. Yeah. What do you think HP's position for in the security? You mentioned containers, you got all this stuff, you got open source, supply chain, you have to left supply chain issues. What is their position with security? Cuz that's the big one. >>I, I think they have to have a mature attitude that customers expect from HPE. Right? I don't have to educate HP on security. So they have to have the partner offerings again. We're back at the ecosystem to have what probably you have. So bring your own security apart from what they have to have out of the box to do business with them. This is why the shocker this morning was back up in recovery coming. <laugh> it's kind like important for that. Right? Well >>That's, that's, that's more ransomware and the >>More skeleton skeletons in the closet there, which customers should check of course. But I think the expectations HP understands that and brings it along either from partner or natively. >>I, I think it's, I think it's services. I think point next is the point of integration for their security. That's why two thirds is software and services. A lot of that is services, right? You know, you need security, we'll help you get there. We people trust HP >>Here, but we have nothing against point next or any professional service. They're all hardworking. But if I will have to rely on humans for my cyber security strategy on a daily level, I'm getting gray hair and I little gray hair >>Red. Okay. I that's, >>But >>I think, but I do think that's the camera strategy. I mean, I'm sure there's a lot of that stuff that's beginning to be designed in, but I, my guess is a lot of it is services. >>Well, you got the Aruba. Part of the booth was packed. Aruba's there. You mentioned that earlier. Is that good enough? Because the word zero trust is kicked around a lot. On one hand, on the other hand, other conversations, it's all about trust. So supply chain and software is trusting trust, trust and verified. So you got this whole mentality of perimeter gone mentality. It's zero trust. And if you've got software trust, interesting thoughts there, how do you reconcile zero trust? And then I need trust. What's what's you? What are you seeing older on that? Because I ask people all the time, they're like, uh, I'm zero trust or is it trust? >>Yeah. The middle ground. Right? Trusted. The meantime people are man manipulating what's happening in your runtime containers. Right? So, uh, drift control is a new password there that you check what's in your runtime containers, which supposedly impenetrable, but people finding ways to hack them. So we'll see this cat and mouse game going on all the time. Yeah. Yeah. There's always gonna be the need for being in a secure, good environment from that perspective. Absolutely. But the key is edge has to be more than Aruba, right? If yeah. HV goes away and says, oh yeah, we can manage your edge with our Aruba devices. That's not enough. It's the virtual probability. And you said the important thing before it's about the data, right? Because the dirty secret of containers is yeah, I move the code, but what enterprise code works without data, right? You can't say as enterprise, okay, we're done for the day check tomorrow. We didn't persist your data, auditor customer. We don't have your data anymore. So filling a way to transport the data. And there just one last thought, right? They have a super interesting asset. They want break lands for the venerable map R right. Which wrote their own storage drivers and gives you the chance to potentially do something in that area, which I'm personally excited about. But we'll see what happens. >>I mean, I think the holy grail is can I, can I put my data into a cloud who's ever, you know, call it a super cloud and can I, is it secure? Is it governed? Can I share it and be confident that it's discoverable and that the, the person I give it to has the right to use it. Yeah. And, and it's the correct data. There's not like a zillion copies running. That's the holy grail. And I, I think the answer today is no, you can, you can do that maybe inside of AWS or maybe inside of Azure, look maybe certainly inside of snowflake, can you do that inside a GreenLake? Well, you probably can inside a GreenLake, but then when you put it into the cloud, is it cross cloud? Is it really out to the edge? And that's where it starts to break down, but that's where the work is to be done. That's >>The one Exide is in there already. Right. So men being men. Yeah. >>But okay. But it it's in there. Yeah. Okay. What do you do with it? Can you share that data? What can you actually automate governance? Right? Uh, is that data discoverable? Are there multiple copies of that data? What's the, you know, master copy. Here's >>A question. You guys, here's a question for you guys analyst, what do you think the psychology is of the CIO or CSO when HP comes into town with GreenLake, uh, and they say, what's your relationship with the hyperscalers? Cause I'm a CIO. I got my environment. I might be CapEx centric or Hey, I'm open model. Open-minded to an operating model. Every one of these enterprises has a cloud relationship. Yeah. Yeah. What's the dynamic. What do you think the psychology is of the CIO when they're rationalizing their, their trajectory, their architecture, cloud, native scale integration with HPE GreenLake or >>HP service. I think she or he hears defensiveness from HPE. I think she hears HPE or he hears HPE coming in and saying, you don't need to go to the cloud. You know, you could keep it right here. I, I don't think that's the right posture. I think it should be. We are your cloud. And we can manage whether it's OnPrem hybrid in AWS, Azure, Google, across those clouds. And we have an edge story that should be the vision that they put forth. That's the super cloud vision, but I don't hear it >>From these guys. What do you think psycho, do you agree with that? >>I'm totally to make, sorry to be boring, but I totally agree with, uh, Dave on that. Right? So the, the, the multi-cloud capability from a trusted large company has worked for anybody up and down the stack. Right? You can look historically for, uh, past layers with cloud Foundry, right? It's history vulnerable. You can look for DevOps of Hashi coop. You can look for database with MongoDB right now. So if HPE provides that data access, right, with all the problems of data gravity and egres cost and the workability, they will be doing really, really well, but we need to hear it more, right. We didn't hear much software today in the keynote. Right. >>Do they have a competitive offering vis-a-vis or Azure? >>The question is, will it be an HPE offering or will, or the software platform, one of the offerings and you as customer can plug and play, right. Will software be a differentiator for HP, right. And will be close, proprietary to the point to again, be open enough for it, or will they get that R and D format that, or will they just say, okay, ES MES here on the side, your choice, and you can use OpenShift or whatever, we don't matter. That's >>The, that's the key question. That's the key question. Is it because it is a competitive strategy? Is it highly differentiated? Oracle is a highly differentiated strategy, right? Is Dell highly differentiated? Eh, Dell differentiates based on its breadth. What? >>Right. Well, let's try for the control plane too. Dell wants to be an, >>Their, their vision is differentiated. Okay. But their execution today is not >>High. All right. Let me throw, let me throw this out at you then. I'm I'm, I'm sorry. I'm I'm HPE. I wanna be the glue layer. Is that, does that fly? >>What >>Do you mean? The group glue layer? I'll I wanna be, you can do Amazon, but I wanna be the glue layer between the clouds and our GreenLake will. >>What's the, what's the incremental value that, that glue provides, >>Provides comfort and reliability and control for the single pane of glass for AWS >>And comes back to the data. In my opinion. Yeah. >>There, there there's glue levels on the data level. Yeah. And there's glue levels on API level. Right. And there's different vendors in the different spaces. Right. Um, I think HPE will want to play on the data side. We heard lots of data stuff. We >>Hear that, >>But we have to see it. Exactly. >>Yeah. But it's, it's lacking today. And so, Hey, you know, you guys know better than I APIs can be fragile and they can be, there's a lot of diversity in terms of the quality of APIs and the documentation, how they work, how mature they are, what, how, what kind of performance they can provide and recoverability. And so just saying, oh wow. We are living the API economy. You know, the it's gonna take time to brew, chime in here. Hi. >><laugh> oh, so guys, you've all been covering HPE for a long time. You know, when Antonio stood up on stage three years ago and said by 2022, and here we are, we're gonna be delivering everything as a service. He's saying we've, we've done it, but, and we're a new company. Do you guys agree with that? >>Definitely. >>I, yes. Yes. With the caveat, I think, yes. The COVID pandemic slowed them down a lot because, um, that gave a tailwind to the hyperscalers, um, because of the, the force of massive O under forecasting working at home. I mean, everyone I talked to was like, no one forecasted a hundred percent work at home, the, um, the CapEx investments. So I think that was an opportunity that they'd be much farther along if there's no COVID people >>Thought it wasn't impossible. Yeah. But so we had the old work from home thing right. Where people trying to get people fired at IBM and Yahoo. Right. So I would've this question covering the HR side and my other hat on. Right. And I would ask CHS let's assume, because I didn't know about COVID shame on me. Right. I said, big California, earthquake breaks. Right. Nobody gets hurt, but all the buildings have to be retrofitted and checked for seism logic down. So everybody's working from home, ask CHS, what kind of productivity gap hit would you get by forcing everybody working from home with the office unsafe? So one, one gentleman, I won't know him, his name, he said 20% and the other one's going ha you're smoking. It's 40 50%. We need to be in the office. We need to meet it first night. And now we went for this exercise. Luckily not with the California. Right. Well, through the price of COVID and we've seen what it can do to, to productivity well, >>The productivity, but also the impact. So like with all the, um, stories we've done over two years, the people that want came out ahead were the ones that had good cloud action. They were already in the cloud. So I, I think they're definitely in different company in the sense of they, I give 'em a pass. I think they're definitely a new company and I'm not gonna judge 'em on. I think they're doing great. But I think pandemic definitely slowed 'em down that about >>It. So I have a different take on this. I think. So we've go back a little history. I mean, you' said this, I steal your line. Meg Whitman took one for the Silicon valley team. Right. She came in. I don't think she ever was excited that I, that you said, you said that, and I think you wrote >>Up, get tape on that one. She >>Had to figure out how do I deal with this mess? I have EDS. I got PC. >>She never should have spun off the PC, but >>Okay. But >>Me, >>Yeah, you can, you certainly could listen. Maybe, maybe Gerstner never should have gone all in on services and IBM would dominate something other than mainframes. They had think pads even for a while, but, but, but so she had that mess to deal with. She dealt with it and however, they dealt with it, Antonio came in, he, he, and he said, all right, we're gonna focus the company. And we're gonna focus the mission on not the machine. Remember those yeah. Presentations, but you just make your eyes glaze over. We're going all in on Azure service >>And edge. He was all on. >>We're gonna build our own cloud. We acquired Aruba. He made some acquisitions in HPC to help differentiate. Yep. And they are definitely a much more focused company now. And unfortunately I wish Antonio would CEO in 2015, cuz that's really when this should have started. >>Yeah. And then, and if you remember back then, Dave, we were interviewing Docker with DevOps teams. They had composability, they were on hybrid really early. I think they might have even coined the term hybrid before VMware tri-state credit for it. But they were first on hybrid. They had DevOps, they had infrastructure risk code. >>HPE had an HP had an awesome cloud team. Yeah. But, and then, and then they tried to go public cloud. Yeah. You know, and then, you know, just made them, I mean, it was just a mess. The focus >>Is there. I give them huge props. And I think, I think the GreenLake to me is exciting here because it's much better than it was two years ago. When, when we talked to, when we started, it's >>Starting to get real. >>It's, it's a real thing. And I think the, the tell will be partners. If they make that right, can pull their different >>Ecosystem, >>Their scale and their customers and fill the software gas with partners mm-hmm <affirmative> and then create that integration opportunity. It's gonna be a home run if they don't do that, they're gonna miss the operating, >>But they have to have their own to your point. They have to have their own software innovation. >>They have to good infrastructure ways to build applications. I don't wanna build with somebody else. I don't wanna take a Microsoft stack on open source stack. I'm not sure if it's gonna work with HP. So they have to have an app dev answer. I absolutely agree with that. And the, the big thing for the partners is, which is a good thing, right? Yep. HPE will not move into applications. Right? You don't have to have the fear of where Microsoft is with their vocal large. Right. If AWS kind of like comes up with APIs and manufacturing, right. Google the same thing with their vertical push. Right. So HPE will not have the CapEx, but >>Application, >>As I SV making them, the partner, the bonus of being able to on premise is an attractive >>Part. That's a great point. >>Hold. So that's an inflection point for next 12 months to watch what we see absolutely running on GreenLake. >>Yeah. And I think one of the things that came out of the, the last couple events this past year, and I'll bring this up, we'll table it and we'll watch it. And it's early in this, I think this is like even, not even the first inning, the machine learning AI impact to the industrial piece. I think we're gonna see a, a brand new era of accelerated digital transformation on the industrial physical world, back office, cloud data center, accounting, all the stuff. That's applications, the app, the real world from space to like robotics. I think that HP edge opportunity is gonna be visible and different. >>So guys, Antonio Neri is on tomorrow. This is only day one. If you can imagine this power panel on day one, can you imagine tomorrow? What is your last question for each of you? What is your, what, what question would you want to ask him tomorrow? Hold start with you. >>How is HPE winning in the long run? Because we know their on premise market will shrink, right? And they can out execute Dell. They can out execute Lenovo. They can out Cisco and get a bigger share of the shrinking market. But that's the long term strategy, right? So why should I buy HPE stock now and have a good return put in the, in the safe and forget about it and have a great return 20 years from now? What's the really long term strategy might be unfair because they, they ran in survival mode to a certain point out of the mass post equipment situation. But what is really the long term strategy? Is it more on the hardware side? Is it gonna go on the HPE, the frontier side? It's gonna be a DNA question, which I would ask Antonio. >>John, >>I would ask him what relative to the macro conditions relative to their customer base, I'd say, cuz the customers are the scoreboard. Can they create a value proposition with their, I use the Microsoft 365 example how they kind of went to the cloud. So my question would be Antonio, what is your core value proposition to CIOs out there who want to transform and take a step function, increase for value with HPE? Tell me that story. I wanna hear. And I don't want to hear, oh, we got a portfolio and no, what value are you enabling your customers to do? >>What and what should that value be? >>I think it's gonna be what we were kind of riffing on, which is you have to provide either what their product market fit needs are, which is, are you solving a problem? Is it a pain point is a growth driver. Uh, and what's the, what's that tailwind. And it's obviously we know at cloud we know edge. The story is great, but what's the value proposition. But by going with HPE, you get X, Y, and Z. If they can explain that clearly with real, so qualitative and quantitative data it's home >>Run. He had a great line of the analyst summit today where somebody asking questions, I'm just listening to the customer. So be ready for this Steve jobs photo, listening to the customer. You can't build something great listening to the customer. You'll be good for the next quarter. The next exponential >>Say, what are the customers saying? <laugh> >>So I would make an observation. And my question would, so my observation would be cloud is growing collectively at 35%. It's, you know, it's approaching 200 billion with a big, big four. If you include Alibaba, IBM has actually said, Hey, we're gonna gr they've promised 6% growth. Uh, Cisco I think is at eight or 9% growth. Dow's growing in double digits. Antonio and HPE have promised three to 4% growth. So what do you have to do to actually accelerate growth? Because three to 4%, my view, not enough to answer Holger's question is why should I buy HPE stock? Well, >>If they have product, if they have customer and there's demand and traction to me, that's going to drive the growth numbers. And I think the weak side of the forecast means that they don't have that fit yet. >>Yeah. So what has to happen for them to get above five, 6% growth? >>That's what we're gonna analyze. I mean, I, I mean, I don't have an answer for that. I wish I had a better answer. I'd tell them <laugh> but I feel, it feels, it feels like, you know, HP has an opportunity to say here's the new HPE. Yeah. Okay. And this is what we stand for. And here's the one thing that we're going to do that consistently drives value for you, the customer. And that's gonna have to come into some, either architectural cloud shift or a data thing, or we are your store for blank. >>All of the above. >>I guess the other question is, would, would you know, he won't answer a rude question, would suspending things like dividends and stock buybacks and putting it into R and D. I would definitely, if you have confidence in the market and you know what to do, why wouldn't you just accelerate R and D and put the money there? IBM, since 2007, IBM spent is the last stat. And I'm looking go in 2007, IBM way, outspent, Google, and Amazon and R and D and, and CapEx two, by the way. Yep. Subsequent to that, they've spent, I believe it's the numbers close to 200 billion on stock buyback and dividends. They could have owned cloud. And so look at this business, the technology business by and large is driven by innovation. Yeah. And so how do you innovate if >>You have I'm buying, I'm buying HP because they're reliable high quality and they have the outcomes that I want. Oh, >>Buy their products and services. I'm not sure I'd buy the stock. Yeah. >>Yeah. But she has to answer ultimately, because a public company. Right. So >>Right. It's this job. As I changed it, now <laugh> two know And I don't wanna rent because rental's more expensive and blah, And if you go to a board in Germany and say, Hey, we can pay our usual hardware, refresh, HP's, HP's made the statement that anything you can do in the cloud you I think they're talking about the, their If you had to sort of take your best guess as to where Yeah. So they quite that's the I mean similar. And then the rest of those services But in terms of just the basic platform, I, I would agree. But their execution today is not I wanna be the glue layer. I'll I wanna be, you can do Amazon, but I wanna be the glue layer between the clouds and And comes back to the data. And there's glue levels on API level. But we have to see it. And so, Hey, you know, you guys know better than I APIs can be fragile and Do you guys agree with that? I mean, everyone I talked to was like, no one forecasted a hundred percent work but all the buildings have to be retrofitted and checked for seism logic down. But I think pandemic definitely slowed I don't think she ever was excited that I, that you said, you said that, Up, get tape on that one. I have EDS. Presentations, but you just make your eyes glaze over. And edge. I wish Antonio would CEO in 2015, cuz that's really when this should have started. I think they might have even coined the term You know, and then, you know, just made them, I mean, And I think, I think the GreenLake to me is And I think the, the tell will be partners. It's gonna be a home run if they don't do that, they're gonna miss the operating, But they have to have their own to your point. You don't have to have the fear of where Microsoft is with their vocal large. the machine learning AI impact to the industrial piece. If you can imagine this power panel But that's the long term strategy, And I don't want to hear, oh, we got a portfolio and no, what value are you enabling I think it's gonna be what we were kind of riffing on, which is you have to provide either what their product So be ready for this Steve jobs photo, listening to the customer. So what do you have to do to actually accelerate growth? And I think the weak side of the forecast means that they don't I feel, it feels, it feels like, you know, HP has an opportunity to say here's I guess the other question is, would, would you know, he won't answer a rude question, You have I'm buying, I'm buying HP because they're reliable high quality and they have the outcomes that I want. I'm not sure I'd buy the stock. So Yeah. Never a dull moment with the three of you around <laugh> guys. Thanks so much for sharing your insights and for letting me join this power panel. We're looking forward to a great conversation next. Lisa Martin, Dave Vellante, two guests join us. We're going to be talking about the power of the channel. Mike Beltrano joins us, Worldwide Channel Sales Leader at AMD, and Phil Soper is here, the North America Head of Channel Sales at HPE. Guys, great to have you. >> Thanks for having us. >> Great to be here. >> So we're talking a lot today about the ecosystem. It's evolved tremendously. Talk to us about the partnership. Mike, we'll start with you. Phil, we'll go to you. What's new with HPE and AMD Better Together? >> It's more than a partnership. It's actually a relationship. We are really tied at the hip, not just in X86 servers but we're really starting to get more diverse in HP's portfolio. We're in their hyper-converged solutions, we're in their storage solutions, we're in GreenLake. It's pretty hard to get away from AMD within the HP portfolio so the relationship is really good. It's gone beyond just a partnership so starting to transition now down into the channel, and we're really excited about it. >> Phil, talk about that more. Talk about the evolution of the partnership and that kind of really that pull-down. >> I think there's an impression sometimes that AMD is kind of the processor that's in our computers and it's so much more, the relationship is so much more than the inclusion of the technology. We co-develop solutions. Interesting news today at Antonio's presentation of the first Exascale supercomputer. We're solving health problems with the supercomputer that was co-developed between AMD and HPE. The other thing I would add is from a channel perspective, it's way more than just what's in the technology. It's how we engage and how we go to market together. And we're very active in working together to offer our solutions to customers and to be competitive and to win. >> Describe that go-to-market model that you guys have, specifically in the channel. >> So, there is a, his organization and mine, we develop joint go-to-market channel programs. We work through the same channel ecosystem of partners. We engage on specific opportunities. We work together to make sure we have the right creative solution pricing to be aggressive in the marketplace and to compete. >> It's a great question because we're in a supply chain crisis right now, right? And you look at the different ways that HP can go to market through the channel. There's probably about four or five ways that channel partners can provide solutions, but it's also route to purchase for the customers. So, we're in a supply chain crisis right now, but we have HP AMD servers in stock in distribution right now. That's a real big competitive advantage, okay? And if those aren't exactly what you need, HP can do custom solutions with AMD platforms all day, across the board. And if you want to go ahead and do it through the cloud, you've got AMD technology in GreenLake. So, it's pretty much have it your way for the customers through the channel and it's really great for the customers too because there's multiple ways for them to procure the equipment through the channel so we really love the way that HP allows us to kind of integrate into their products, but then integrate into their procurement model down through the channel for the end user to make the right choice. So, it's fantastic. >> You mentioned that AMD's in HCI, in storage, in GreenLake and in the channel. What are the different requirements within those areas? How does the channel influence those requirements and what you guys actually go to market with? >> Well, it comes down to awareness. Awareness is our biggest enemy and the channel's just huge for us because AMD's competitive advantage in our technology is much different. And when you think about price and performance and security and sustainability, that's what we're delivering. And really the channel kind of plugs that in and educates their customers through their marketing and demand gen, kind of influences when they hear from their customers or if they're proactively touching them, influences the route to purchase based on their situation, if they want to pay for it as a service, if they want to finance it, if it does happen to be in stock and speed of delivery is important to them, the channel partner influences that through the relationships and distribution or they can go ahead and place it as a custom to order. So, it's just really based on where they're at in their purchasing cycle and also, it's not about the hardware as much as it's about the software and the applications and the high-value workloads that they're running and that kind of just dictates the platform. >> Does hardware matter? >> Yes, it sure does. It does, man. We're just kind of, it's kind of like the vessel at this point and our processors and our GPS are in the HP vessel, but it is about the application. >> I love that analogy. I would say, absolutely does, workloads matter more and then what's the hardware to run those workloads is really critical. >> And to your point though, it's not just about the CPU anymore. It's about, you guys have made some acquisitions to sort of diversify. It's about all the other supporting sort of actors, if you will, that support those new workloads. >> Let me give you an example that's being showcased at this show, okay? Our extreme search solution with being driven by Splunk, okay? And it's a cybersecurity solution that the industry is going to have to be able to handle in regards to response to any sort of breach and when you think about, they have to search through the data and how they have to get through it and do it in a timely fashion. What we've done is developed a DL385 solution where we have a epic processor from AMD, we have a Xilinx which who we own now, they're FGPA, and Samsung SSDs which are four terabytes per drive packed in a DL385. Now you add the Splunk solution on top of that and if there ever is a breach, it would normally take about days to go ahead and access that breach. Now it can be done in 25 minutes and we have that solution here right now so it's not like we acquire Xilinx and we're waiting to integrate it. We hit the ground running and it's fantastic 'cause the solution's being driven by one of our top partners, WWT, and it's live in their booth here today so we're kind of showing that integration of what AMD is doing with our acquisitions in HP servers and being able to show that today with a workload on top of it is real deal. >> Purpose-built to scan through all those log files and actually surface the inside. >> Exactly what it is, and it's on public sector right now, that's a requirement to be able to do that and to not have it take weeks and be able to do it in 25 minutes is pretty impressive. >> Those are the outcomes customers are demanding? >> That's it. People are, if you're purchasing an outcome, HP can deliver it with AMD and if you're looking to build your own, we can give it to you that way too so, it's flexibility. >> Absolutely critical. Mike, from your perspective on the partnership we've seen and obviously a lot of transformation at HPE over the last couple of years, Antonio stood on this stage three years ago and said, "By 2022, we're going to deliver the entire portfolio as a service." How influential has AMD been from a relationship perspective on what he said three years ago and where they are today? >> Oh my gosh! We've been with them all the way through. I mean, HP is just such a great partner, and right now, we're the VDI solution on GreenLake so it's HP GreenLake, VDI solutions powered by AMD. We love that brand recognition as a service, okay? Same with high-performance computing powered by AMD, offered on HP GreenLake so it's really changed it a lot because as a service, it's just a different way for a customer to procure it and they don't have to worry about that hardware and the stack and anything like that. It's more about them going into that GreenLake portal and being able to understand that they're paying it just like they pay their phone bill or anything else so it's really Antonio's been spot-on with that because that's a reality today and it's being delivered through the channel and AMD's proud to be a part of it and it's much different 'cause we don't need to be as evolved as we have to be from a hardware sale perspective when it's going through GreenLake and it makes it much easier for us. >> Phil, you talked about workloads, really kind of what matter, how are they evolving? How is that affecting? What are customers grabbing you and saying, "We need this." What do you and from a workload standpoint and how are you delivering that? >> Well, the edge to the cloud platform or GreenLake is very much as a service offering, aimed at workloads. And so, if HPE is building and focusing its solutions on addressing specific workload needs, it's not about necessarily the performance you mentioned, or you're asking the question about hardware. It's not necessarily about that. It's, what is the workload, should the workload be, or could the workload be in public cloud or is it a workload that needs to be on premise and customers are making those choices and we're working with those customers to help them drive those strategies and then we adapt depending on where the customer wants the workload. >> Well, it's interesting, because Antonio in his keynote today said, "That's the wrong question," and my reaction was that's the question everybody's asking. It may be the wrong question, but that's what so, your challenge is to, I guess, get them to stop asking that question and just run the right tool for the right job kind of thing. >> That's exactly what it's about because you take high-value workloads, okay? And that can mean a lot of different things and if you just pick one of them, let's say like VDI or hyper-converged. HP's the only game in town where they can kind of go into a gun, a battle with four different guns. They give you a lot of choices and they offer them on an AMD platform and they're not locking you in. They give you a lot of flexibility and choice. So, if you were doing hyper-converged through HPE and you were looking to do it on AMD platform, they can offer to you with VMware vSAN ReadyNodes. They can offer it to you with SimpliVity. They can offer it to you with Nutanix. They can offer it to you with Microsoft, all on an AMD stack. And if you want to bring your own VMware and go bare metal, HP will just give you the notes. If you want to go factory integrated or if you want to purchase it via OEM through HP and have them support it, they just deliver it any way you want to get it. It's just a fantastic story. >> I'll just say, look, others could do that, but they don't want to, okay? That's the fact. Sometimes it happens, sometimes the channel cobbles it together in the field, but it's like they do it grinding their teeth so I mean, I think that is a differentiator of HPE. You're agnostic to that. In fact, by design. >> They can bring your own, you can bring your own software. I mean, it's like, you just bring your own. I mean, if you have it, why would we make a customer buy it again? And HP gives them that flexibility and if it's multiple hypervisors and it's brand agnostic, it's more about, let's deliver you the nodes, purpose-built, for the application that you're going to run in that workload and then HP goes ahead and does that across their portfolio on a custom to order. It's just beautiful for us to fit the need for the customer. >> Well, you're meeting customers where they are. >> Yes. >> Which in today's world is critical. There's no, really no other option for companies. Customers are demanding. Demands are not going to go. We're not going to see a decrease after the pandemic's over of demand, right? And the expectations on businesses. So meeting the customers where they are, giving them that choice, that flexibility is table stakes. >> How has those, you've mentioned supply chain constraints, it sounds like you guys are managing that pretty well. It's I think it's a lot of these hard to get supporting components, maybe not the most expensive component, but they just don't have it. So you can't ship the car or you can't ship the server, whatever it is, how is that affecting the channel? How are they dealing with that? Maybe you could give us an update. >> Oh, the channel's just, we love them, they're the front line, that's who the customers call in, who's been waiting to get their technology and we're wading through it, thank goodness that we have GreenLake because if you wanted to buy it traditionally, because HP is supplying supply-to-purchase through distribution in stock, but it's very limited. And then if you go customer order, that's where the long lead times come into place because it's not just the hard drives and memory and the traditional things that are constrained now. Now it's like the clips and the intangibles and things like that and when you get to that point, you got to just do the best you can and HP supply chain has just been fantastic, super informative, AMD, we're not the problem. We got HP, plenty of processors and plenty of accelerators and GPUs and we're standing with them because that back to the relationship, we're facing the customer with them and managing their expectations to the best we can and trying to give them options to keep their business floating. >> So is that going to be, is this a supply chain constraints could be an accelerant for GreenLake because that capacity is in place for you to service your customers with GreenLake presumably. You're planning for that. There's headroom there in terms of being able to deliver that. If you can't deliver GreenLake, all this promise. >> I would say I would be careful not to position GreenLake as an answer to supply chain challenges, right? I think there's a greater value proposition to a client, and keep in mind, you still have technology at the heart of it, right? And so, and to your question though about our partners, honestly in a lot of ways, it's heartbreaking given the challenges that they face, not just with HPE, but other vendors that they sell and support and without our partners and managing those, we'd be in a world of hurt, frankly and we're working on options. We work with our partners really closely. We work with AMD where we have constraints to move to other potential configurations. >> Does GreenLake make it harder or easier for you to forecast? Because on the one hand, it's as a service and on the other hand, I can dial it down as a customer or dial it up and spike it up if I need to. Do you have enough experience to know at this point, whether it's easier or harder to forecast? >> I think intuitively it's probably harder because you have that variable component that you can't forecast, right? It's with GreenLake, you have your baseline so you know what that baseline is going to be, the baseline commitment and you build in that variable component which is as a service, you pay for what you consume. So that variable component is the one thing that is we can estimate but we don't know exactly what the customer is going to use. >> When you do a GreenLake deal, how does it work? Let's say it's a two-year deal or a three-year deal, whatever and you negotiate a price with a customer for price per X. Do you know like what that contract value is going to be over the life or do you only know that that baseline and then everything else is upside for you and extra additional cost? So how does that work? >> It's a good question. So you know both, you know the baseline and you know what the variable capacity is, what the limits are. So at the beginning of the contract, that's what you know, whether or not a customer determines that they have to expand or do a change order to add another workload into the configuration is the one thing that we hope happens. You don't know. >> But you know with certainty that over the life of that contract, the amount of that contract that's booked, you're going to recognize at some point that. You just don't know when. >> Yes, and so that, and that's to your question, you know that element, the fluctuation in terms of usage is depending on what's happening in the world, right? The pandemic, as an example, with GreenLake customers, probably initially at the beginning of the pandemic, their usage went down for obvious reasons and then it fluctuates up. >> I think a lot of people don't understand that. That's an interesting nuance. Cool, thank you. >> Guys, thanks so much for joining us on the program, talking about the relationship that AMD and HPE have together, the benefits for customers on the outcomes that it's achieving. We've had a lot of great conversations so far. Just a few hours in. We have two of our alumni back with us. Powerhouses, two powerhouses from Nutanix. Two for the price of one. Mandy Dhaliwal joins us. The CMO of 90 days at Nutanix. It's great to see you. Congratulations on the gig. >> Thanks Lisa. It's great to be here and great to be at Nutanix. >> Isn't it? And Tarkan Maner, the Chief Commercial Officer at Nutanix. Welcome back Tarkan. >> Great to see you guys. >> So this is only day one of the the main show Tarkan. We've been hearing a lot about cloud as an operating model. We've heard your CEO Rajiv talking about it. Break that down from Nutanix's point of view. >> Yeah, look at the end, the tech conference we are talking a lot technology but at the end it is all about outcomes. I saw Keith was here earlier, you know, GreenLake's story. We were on a session earlier. Everything is about business outcomes for the customers. And obviously our partner Ecosystems, NBC all these double technologies come together and become an open model. And our customers are moving from a CAPEX model, old school model, what I call dinosaur model, into an OPEX model, subscription model. Which Nutanix basically the category creator for this, in a hybrid multi-cloud fashion. One platform, one experience, any app, any user, anytime, and make it count. Let the customers focus on business outcomes. Let us deal with infrastructure for you. >> What are some of the key outcomes that you're seeing customers achieve? We've seen so much change in the last couple of years. >> Tarkan: Right. >> A lot of acceleration. >> Tarkan: Right. >> Every company has to be a data company today to compete. >> Right. >> What are some of the outcomes that you're really proud of? >> So look, at the end of the, day's it's all about digital transformation and it's a big loaded word. But at the end of the day every company is trying to get digitized. And hybrid multicloud is the only way to get there in a cost effective way. So that cost is a big story. Highly secure. Manageable, available, reliable, total cost ownership definitely depressed and take the complexity out. Let us deal with the infrastructure for you. You focus on your time to market, and the best applications for the best users. >> So Mandy, I remember, you know you talked about your category creator Tarkan, and I remember Stu Miniman and I, were in the Wikibon offices. We were just getting started and he said, "Dave you got to come in here." And Dhiraj was on the phone. They were describing this new category and I was blown away. I'm like, wow, that's like the cloud but you know, for on-prem. So what does the, what does the cloud operating model mean to Nutanix Mandy? >> Really, what we're trying to do is become this common cloud platform across Core, Edge and Cloud. We're known for our strength in HCI on premise. We have capability across. So it's really important for us to share this story with the market. Now, also one of the reasons I joined. You know this story needs to be told in a bigger fashion. So I'm here to really help evolve this category. We've won HCI, right? What's next? So stay tuned. >> So we call that super cloud. I call it. >> Yes, I love that name. >> So it, but it needs has meaning, right? >> Right. >> It's a new layer. It's not just, oh, I run on Azure. I run an Aw or running green. >> Mandy: Right. >> It's actually a common infrastructure. >> Yes. >> Common experience across maybe and even out to the edge. >> Mandy: Right. >> Right. So is, is that, do you guys see that or do you think this is just a little buzzword that Dave made up? >> No, I think it has legs. And I think at the core of it, it's simplicity and elegance. And if you look, and, and again, I'm drinking the the champagne, right? We have that we architected for that. We've solved that problem. So we now can extend it to become ubiquitous in the market. So it's, it's an amazing place to be because we've got the the scale, frankly, and the breadth now of the technology platform to be able to go deliver that super cloud. >> And you have to do the work, right? You, you, you have to hide all the complexity- >> Mandy: Yeah. >> Of whether it's AWS, Azure, Google, GreenLake wherever you go on prem. >> Mandy: Right. >> And not only that, as you know Dave, many people think about cloud, they automatically think about public cloud. AWS, Azure, or Google. Guess what? We have customers. Some of the workloads and apps running on a local country. If you're in Singapore, on Singtel, and your, if you're in Switzerland on Swisscom, if you're in Japan on NTT, guess what? Our cloud runs also on those clouds. For those customers who want the data, gravity, local issues with the security and privacy laws in the local country then all this SI you have HCI, Emphasis VIDPro, Accenture, CAPS, JAM, and ITCS. They have also cloud services. What we build as Mandy said as the creator, make the platform run anywhere. So the customers can move data, apps, workloads from cloud to cloud. From private to public and within public, from public to public. From AWS to Singtel. From Singtel to Swisscom to Azure, doesn't matter. We want to make sure one platform one experience, any app, any user. >> And at least a lot of those guys are building on OpenStack. We don't talk about OpenStack anymore. But a lot of the local telcos they actually it's alive and well and actually growing. >> So you, you make it sound simple. So I got to ask you as the chief marketing officer how do you message that simplicity and actually make it tangible for customers? >> That's a great question. It's really about the customer story, right? How do we share that we're able to take something that took months to deploy and have it done in in days, minutes, right? So there's a lot of those kinds of stories that you'll see across the platform coming. We're getting a lot more messaging around that. We're also tightening up the message to be more easily conveyed. So that's a lot of the stuff that I'm working on right now and really super excited. You know, we've got leading retailers, financial services institutions, public sector agencies that are running on our platform. So we've got this amazing cadre of customers and their stories just need to be told. >> That voice of the customer is so powerful. >> Mandy: Yep. >> As you well know Tarkan. That's, that's the objective voice right? That is ideally articulating your value proposition. >> Yeah. >> Validating that helping other customers understand this, these are the outcomes we are achieving. >> Mandy: Right? >> You can do the same. >> Mandy: Right. >> And, and different personas. >> Mandy: Right. >> It's not one customer fits all right. You heard Home Depot, Daniel with Antonio on the keynote. The stores, the distribution center, the warehousing and their service department, their mobile app all that data has to move from place to place. And we want to make sure it's cost effective. It's secure. And not only for the system, people like Daniel but also for application developers. Dave, you talked about, you know, Open Source, OpenStack, a lot of new application development is all open source. >> Mandy: Yep. >> And we need to also gear toward them and give them a platform, a hybrid multicloud platform. So they can build applications and then run applications and manage lifecycle applications anywhere in simple ways securely. So this platform is not only for running applications but also build a new set of digital transformation driven applications. >> So what are you doing with GreenLake especially in that context, right? 'Cause that's what we're looking for. Is like are people going to build applications on top. Maybe it's the incumbents. It might not be startups, but what what are you doing there? >> Right. So look, I'll give you the highlights on this. I know you talked to Keith again we had the session earlier. We have about 2000 plus customers. Customers are moving from a CapEx model to an OPEX model. They like the subscription side of the business and basically our strategy and many is leading this globally making cloud on your terms. So you have the control, you move from CapEx to OPEX and we bring the data in cloud to you. So you can manage the data securely, privately build your applications, and then they're ready. You can move applications based on microservices capabilities we deliver to different cloud as, as you wish. >> So then what are you hearing from customers? What are they most excited about right now given the massive potential that you're about to unleash? >> It it's really about best in class, right? So you get these these amazing technologies to come together. We abstract the complexity away for the customer. So HP GreenLake brings economic benefit. Nutanix brings experience. So you couple those two. And all of a sudden they've got time to value. Like they've never had before. Add on top of that the skills gap that we've got in the market, right? The new breed of folks that are deploying and managing these applications just don't have an appetite for complexity like they did in the old world. So we've got elegance, that's underpinning our architecture and simplicity and ease of use that learn that really translates into customer delight. So that's our secret sauce. >> You talk about time to value. Sorry, Dave. Time to value is no joke as a marketer. Talk to me about what does that mean from a translation perspective? Because these days, one of the things we learned in the pandemic, other than everyone had no patience and still probably doesn't is that access to realtime data no longer a, oh, it's awesome. It's Fanta, it's, it's table stakes. It is it's, what's going to help companies succeed. And those not. So from a time to value perspective, talk a little bit more about that as really impactful to every industry. >> Right, And, and, and underpin underpinning, all of it is that simplicity and ease of use, right? So if I can pick up and have portability across all aspects of my platform, guess what? I've got a single pane of glass that's that I'm able to manage my entire infrastructure through. That's really powerful. So I don't have to waste time doing an undifferentiated heavy lifting, all of a sudden there's huge value there in simplicity and ease of use, right? So it translates for things that would take months and you know, hundreds of developers all of a sudden you can vend out infrastructure in a way that's performant, reliable, scalable and all of a sudden, right? Everybody's happy. People are not losing sleep anymore because they know they've got a reliable way of deploying and managing and running their infrastructure. >> Perfect example for you very quick. Just is very exciting. Mandy and I, were in the session, Texas Children's Hospital. >> Yeah. >> Theresa Montag. I mean, Tonthat, she's the head of infrastructure, with Keith, with us you should listen to the patient care Pediatric, you know, oncology, realtime data. Hip regulation, highly regulated industry data. Gravity is super important. State laws, city laws, healthcare laws. The data cannot go to a public cloud service but has to be cloud driven, cloud enabled and data driven and eccentric on the site. But cloud operating model, Nutanix again with GreenLake, delivers a subscription methodology, a you know, OPEX model and delivers desktop service cloud native applications, supporting all these tools like epic all happening in healthcare. >> You guys have a high net promoter score. What, what got you there? And what's going to keep you there in the future. >> It's underpinned by the technology itself and also our outstanding support team right. We hear our competitors' customers call us for support first, before they call our competitors. If you can't take that to the bank, what can you, right. It's crazy. They, our customers tell us this >> Dave: Really? >> Really. >> It's pretty validating. >> Yeah. >> Yeah, help us with has help us with this XYZ stuff. Yeah. >> And it becomes even more important with this new cloud era. >> Yes. >> As you're moving the data, the applications to different places, they want the same experience. And look as a company, we spent the investment. It's not free. >> Mandy: Yeah. >> It costs us a lot of money to make that happen. One of the best support organizations I've been in industry for 30 years, I've never seen this kind of a maniacal focus on customer service. And without that success will not come. >> Yeah, I mean, I've met a lot of Nutanix customers at the various shows over the years. Ridden in taxis bus rides, you know, cocktail parties. They're, they're an interesting bunch, right. They, they were kind of leading edge early on. They saw the light bulb went off, they adopted. >> Right. >> Right, so, and think about thinking about aligning with where they're going where are they going and how is Nutanix aligning with them? >> There's, there's so much complexity in the world, right? So we're abstracting away the complexity. Not all workloads are meant to run in an either or situation. >> Right. >> Right, and we're hearing from IDC as well in, in, by 2026, 75% of workloads are going to be misplaced. How do they have a strategic partner? That's going to help them run their organization effectively and efficiently. We become that open and neutral player in the market. That can be the trusted advisor for them to help with workload placement optimization. They're standardizing, they're consolidating they're modernizing, they're transforming. There's a lot going on right. And so how do they come to somebody? That's voice of reason that also is well networked across the ecosystem. And that interoperability is key and yes, I'm still drinking the Kool-Aid, but it, I see it. It's, it's a tremendous story. >> Switzerland with weapons. (everyone laughing) >> You said it, you said it, Dave. >> And also one other thing it's important competition makes us better not bitter. >> Yeah. >> We have the best best partner network, 10,000 plus partners but more than numbers, quality, constantly working theater. And some of our partners also are competitors. We compete with them and we deliver solutions this way. Customers don't have to forklift out forklift in Nutanix. We leverage their past investment, current investment so they can tie Nutanix in different ways for different workloads, not one size fits all. We have multiple solutions, multiple ways you know, small, medium, large, extra large D in terms of scale and different workloads from the, you know Edge to the Cloud. And to at the end of the day to data as a whole, as you heard from HP today, our strategy, our roadmaps super aligned. That's why we were having a lot of success with GreenLake as well. >> Mandy, can you talk a last question about the partner ecosystem that Tarkan mentioned? How were you leveraging that to, to modify the messaging that you talked about? You've only been here almost 90 days. >> Mandy: Right. >> How is the partner ecosystem going to be a facilitator of the Nutanix brand and messaging and the reach? >> They're, they're tremendous, right? Because we're able to now, like we're doing here, right. Be able to reach into their customer base, and showcase our stories in a purpose built way right. This is, this is reality and solutions that we're driving for the customers with like-minded problems, like-minded people so they can see that. And so we do that across the, the ecosystem and all of a sudden, we've got this rolling thunder if you will. So it's up to us to, to, to really hone in on the right narrative and hand it to them and have them run with it that there's going to be practices built on this, even in a deeper way, moving forward. I see it, you know, we've done, I've done this before in my career. And so I've got conviction that we're on the right track and, you know, watch the space. >> Dot, dot, dot, to be continued. Dave, it's great to be here. This is the first Discover in three years and we're here with about 7,000 of our closest friends. >> Yeah. You know, I tweeted out this, I think I've been to 14 Discovers between the U.S. and Europe, and I've never seen a Discover with so much energy. People are not only psyched to get back together, that's for sure, but I think HPE's got a little spring in its step and it's feeling more confident than maybe some of the past Discovers that I've been to. >> I think so, too. I think there's definitely a spring in the step and we're going to be unpacking some of that spring next with one of our alumni who joins us, Keith White's here, the executive vice president and general manager of GreenLake Cloud Services. Welcome back. >> Great. You all thanks for having me. It's fantastic that you're here and you're right, the energy is crazy at this show. It's been a lot of pent up demand, but I think what you heard from Antonio today is our strategy's changing dramatically and it's really embracing our customers and our partners. So it's great. >> Embracing the customers and the partners, the ecosystem expansion is so critical, especially the last couple of years with the acceleration of digital transformation. So much challenge in every industry, but lots of momentum on the GreenLake side, I was looking at the Q2 numbers, triple digit growth in orders, 65,000 customers over 70 services, eight new services announced just this morning. Talk to us about the momentum of GreenLake. >> The momentum's been fantastic. I mean, I'll tell you, the fact that customers are really now reaccelerating their digital transformation, you probably heard a lot, but there was a delay as we went through the pandemic. So now it's reaccelerating, but everyone's going to a hybrid, multi-cloud environment. Data is the new currency. And obviously, everyone's trying to push out to the Edge and GreenLake is that edge to cloud platform. So we're just seeing tons of momentum, not just from the customers, but partners, we've enabled the platform so partners can plug into it and offer their solutions to our customers as well. So it's exciting and it's been fun to see the momentum from an order standpoint, but one of the big numbers that you may not be aware of is we have over a 96% retention rate. So once a customer's on GreenLake, they stay on it because they're seeing the value, which has been fantastic. >> The value is absolutely critically important. We saw three great big name customers. The Home Depot was on stage this morning, Oak Ridge National Laboratory was as well, Evil Geniuses. So the momentum in the enterprise is clearly present. >> Yeah. It is. And we're hearing it from a lot of customers. And I think you guys talk a lot about, hey, there's the cloud, data and Edge, these big mega trends that are happening out there. And you look at a company like Barclays, they're actually reinventing their entire private cloud infrastructure, running over a hundred thousand workloads on HPE GreenLake. Or you look at a company like Zenseact, who's basically they do autonomous driving software. So they're doing massive parallel computing capabilities. They're pulling in hundreds of petabytes of data to then make driving safer and so you're seeing it on the data front. And then on the Edge, you look at anyone like a Patrick Terminal, for example. They run a whole terminal shipyard. They're getting data in from exporters, importers, regulators, the works and they have to real-time, analyze that data and say, where should this thing go? Especially with today's supply chain challenges, they have to be so efficient, that it's just fantastic. >> It was interesting to hear Fidelma, Keith, this morning on stage. It was the first time I'd really seen real clarity on the platform itself and that it's obviously her job is, okay, here's the platform, now, you guys got to go build on top of it. Both inside of HPE, but also externally, so your ecosystem partners. So, you mentioned the financial services companies like Barclays. We see those companies moving into the digital world by offering some of their services in building their own clouds. >> Keith: That's right. >> What's your vision for GreenLake in terms of being that platform, to assist them in doing that and the data component there? >> I think that was one of the most exciting things about not just showcasing the platform, but also the announcement of our private cloud enterprise, Cloud Service. Because in essence, what you're doing is you're creating that framework for what most companies are doing, which is they're becoming cloud service providers for their internal business units. And they're having to do showback type scenarios, chargeback type scenarios, deliver cloud services and solutions inside the organization so that open platform, you're spot on. For our ecosystem, it's fantastic, but for our customers, they get to leverage it as well for their own internal IT work that's happening. >> So you talk about hybrid cloud, you talk about private cloud, what's your vision? You know, we use this term Supercloud. This in a layer that goes across clouds. What's your thought about that? Because you have an advantage at the Edge with Aruba. Everybody talks about the Edge, but they talk about it more in the context of near Edge. >> That's right. >> We talked to Verizon and they're going far Edge, you guys are participating in that, as well as some of your partners in Red Hat and others. What's your vision for that? What I call Supercloud, is that part of the strategy? Is that more longer term or you think that's pipe dream by Dave? >> No, I think it's really thoughtful, Dave, 'cause it has to be part of the strategy. What I hear, so for example, Ford's a great example. They run Azure, AWS, and then they made a big deal with Google cloud for their internal cars and they run HPE GreenLake. So they're saying, hey, we got four clouds. How do we sort of disaggregate the usage of that? And Chris Lund, who is the VP of information technology at Liberty Mutual Insurance, he talked about it today, where he said, hey, I can deliver these services to my business unit. And they don't know, am I running on the public cloud? Am I running on our HPE GreenLake cloud? Like it doesn't matter to the end user, we've simplified that so much. So I think your Supercloud idea is super thoughtful, not to use the super term too much, that I'm super excited about because it's really clear of what our customers are trying to accomplish, which it's not about the cloud, it's about the solution and the business outcome that gets to work. >> Well, and I think it is different. I mean, it's not like the last 10 years where it was like, hey, I got my stuff to work on the different clouds and I'm replicating as much as I can, the cloud experience on-prem. I think you guys are there now and then to us, the next layer is that ecosystem enablement. So how do you see the ecosystem evolving and what role does Green Lake play there? >> Yeah. This has been really exciting. We had Tarkan Maner who runs Nutanix and Karl Strohmeyer from Equinix on stage with us as well. And what's happening with the ecosystem is, I used to say, one plus one has to equal three for our customers. So when you bring these together, it has to be that scenario, but we are joking that one plus one plus one equals five now because everything has a partner component to it. It's not about the platform, it's not about the specific cloud service, it's actually about the solution that gets delivered. And that's done with an ISV, it's done with a Colo, it's done even with the Hyperscalers. We have Azure Stack HCI as a fully integrated solution. It happens with managed service providers, delivering managed services out to their folks as well. So that platform being fully partner enabled and that ecosystem being able to take advantage of that, and so we have to jointly go to market to our customers for their business needs, their business outcomes. >> Some of the expansion of the ecosystem. we just had Red Hat on in the last hour talking about- >> We're so excited to partner with them. >> Right, what's going on there with OpenShift and Ansible and Rel, but talk about the customer influence in terms of the expansion of the ecosystem. We know we've got to meet customers where they are, they're driving it, but we know that HPE has a big presence in the enterprise and some pretty big customer names. How are they from a demand perspective? >> Well, this is where I think the uniqueness of GreenLake has really changed HPE's approach with our customers. Like in all fairness, we used to be a vendor that provided hardware components for, and we talked a lot about hardware costs and blah, blah, blah. Now, we're actually a partner with those customers. What's the business outcome you're requiring? What's the SLA that we offer you for what you're trying to accomplish? And to do that, we have to have it done with partners. And so even on the storage front, Qumulo or Cohesity. On the backup and recovery disaster recovery, yes, we have our own products, but we also partner with great companies like Veeam because it's customer choice, it's an open platform. And the Red Hat announcement is just fantastic. Because, hey, from a container platform standpoint, OpenShift provides 5,000 plus customers, 90% of the fortune 500 that they engage with, with that opportunity to take GreenLake with OpenShift and implement that container capabilities on-prem. So it's fantastic. >> We were talking after the keynote, Keith Townsend came on, myself and Lisa. And he was like, okay, what about startups? 'Cause that's kind of a hallmark of cloud. And we felt like, okay, startups are not the ideal customer profile necessarily for HPE. Although we saw Evil Geniuses up on stage, but I threw out and I'd love to get your thoughts on this that within companies, incumbents, you have entrepreneurs, they're trying to build their own clouds or Superclouds as I use the term, is that really the target for the developer audience? We've talked a lot about OpenShift with their other platforms, who says as a partner- >> We just announced another extension with Rancher and- >> Yeah. I saw that. And you have to have optionality for developers. Is that the way we should think about the target audience from a developer standpoint? >> I think it will be as we go forward. And so what Fidelma presented on stage was the new developer platform, because we have come to realize, we have to engage with the developers. They're the ones building the apps. They're the ones that are delivering the solutions for the most part. So yeah, I think at the enterprise space, we have a really strong capability. I think when you get into the sort of mid-market SMB standpoint, what we're doing is we're going directly to the managed service and cloud service providers and directly to our Disty and VARS to have them build solutions on top of GreenLake, powered by GreenLake, to then deliver to their customers because that's what the customer wants. I think on the developer side of the house, we have to speak their language, we have to provide their capabilities because they're going to start articulating apps that are going to use both the public cloud and our on-prem capabilities with GreenLake. And so that's got to work very well. And so you've heard us talk about API based and all of that sort of scenario. So it's an exciting time for us, again, moving HPE strategy into something very different than where we were before. >> Well, Keith, that speaks to ecosystem. So I don't know if you were at Microsoft, when the sweaty Steve Ballmer was working with the developers, developers. That's about ecosystem, ecosystem, ecosystem. I don't expect we're going to see Antonio replicating that. But that really is the sort of what you just described is the ecosystem developing on top of GreenLake. That's critical. >> Yeah. And this is one of the things I learned. So, being at Microsoft for as long as I was and leading the Azure business from a commercial standpoint, it was all about the partner and I mean, in all fairness, almost every solution that gets delivered has some sort of partner component to it. Might be an ISV app, might be a managed service, might be in a Colo, might be with our hybrid cloud, with our Hyperscalers, but everything has a partner component to it. And so one of the things I learned with Azure is, you have to sell through and with your ecosystem and go to that customer with a joint solution. And that's where it becomes so impactful and so powerful for what our customers are trying to accomplish. >> When we think about the data gravity and the value of data that put massive potential that it has, even Antonio talked about it this morning, being data rich but insights poor for a long time. >> Yeah. >> Every company in today's day and age has to be a data company to be competitive, there's no more option for that. How does GreenLake empower companies? GreenLake and its ecosystem empower companies to really live being data companies so that they can meet their customers where they are. >> I think it's a really great point because like we said, data's the new currency. Data's the new gold that's out there and people have to get their arms around their data estate. So then they can make these business decisions, these business insights and garner that. And Dave, you mentioned earlier, the Edge is bringing a ton of new data in, and my Zenseact example is a good one. But with GreenLake, you now have a platform that can do data and data management and really sort of establish and secure the data for you. There's no data latency, there's no data egress charges. And which is what we typically run into with the public cloud. But we also support a wide range of databases, open source, as well as the commercial ones, the sequels and those types of scenarios. But what really comes to life is when you have to do analytics on that and you're doing AI and machine learning. And this is one of the benefits I think that people don't realize with HPE is, the investments we've made with Cray, for example, we have and you saw on stage today, the largest supercomputer in the world. That depth that we have as a company, that then comes down into AI and analytics for what we can do with high performance compute, data simulations, data modeling, analytics, like that is something that we, as a company, have really deep, deep capabilities on. So it's exciting to see what we can bring to customers all for that spectrum of data. >> I was excited to see Frontier, they actually achieve, we hosted an event, co-produced event with HPE during the pandemic, Exascale day. >> Yeah. >> But we weren't quite at Exascale, we were like right on the cusp. So to see it actually break through was awesome. So HPC is clearly a differentiator for Hewlett Packard Enterprise. And you talk about the egress. What are some of the other differentiators? Why should people choose GreenLake? >> Well, I think the biggest thing is, that it's truly is a edge to cloud platform. And so you talk about Aruba and our capabilities with a network attached and network as a service capabilities, like that's fairly unique. You don't see that with the other companies. You mentioned earlier to me that compute capabilities that we've had as a company and the storage capabilities. But what's interesting now is that we're sort of taking all of that expertise and we're actually starting to deliver these cloud services that you saw on stage, private cloud, AI and machine learning, high performance computing, VDI, SAP. And now we're actually getting into these industry solutions. So we talked last year about electronic medical records, this year, we've talked about 5g. Now, we're talking about customer loyalty applications. So we're really trying to move from these sort of baseline capabilities and yes, containers and VMs and bare metal, all that stuff is important, but what's really important is the services that you run on top of that, 'cause that's the outcomes that our customers are looking at. >> Should we expect you to be accelerating? I mean, look at what you did with Azure. You look at what AWS does in terms of the feature acceleration. Should we expect HPE to replicate? Maybe not to that scale, but in a similar cadence, we're starting to see that. Should we expect that actually to go faster? >> I think you couched it really well because it's not as much about the quantity, but the quality and the uses. And so what we've been trying to do is say, hey, what is our swim lane? What is our sweet spot? Where do we have a superpower? And where are the areas that we have that superpower and how can we bring those solutions to our customers? 'Cause I think, sometimes, you get over your skis a bit, trying to do too much, or people get caught up in the big numbers, versus the, hey, what's the real meat behind it. What's the tangible outcome that we can deliver to customers? And we see just a massive TAM. I want to say my last analysis was around $42 billion in the next three years, TAM and the Azure service on-prem space. And so we think that there's nothing but upside with the core set of workloads, the core set of solutions and the cloud services that we bring. So yeah, we'll continue to innovate, absolutely, amen, but we're not in a, hey we got to get to 250 this and 300 that, we want to keep it as focused as we can. >> Well, the vast majority of the revenue in the public cloud is still compute. I mean, not withstanding, Microsoft obviously does a lot in SaaS, but I'm talking about the infrastructure and service. Still, well, I would say over 50%. And so there's a lot of the services that don't make any revenue and there's that long tail, if I hear your strategy, you're not necessarily going after that. You're focusing on the quality of those high value services and let the ecosystem sort of bring in the rest. >> This is where I think the, I mean, I love that you guys are asking me about the ecosystem because this is where their sweet spot is. They're the experts on hyper-converged or databases, a service or VDI, or even with SAP, like they're the experts on that piece of it. So we're enabling that together to our customers. And so I don't want to give you the impression that we're not going to innovate. Amen. We absolutely are, but we want to keep it within that, that again, our swim lane, where we can really add true value based on our expertise and our capabilities so that we can confidently go to customers and say, hey, this is a solution that's going to deliver this business value or this capability for you. >> The partners might be more comfortable with that than, we only have one eye sleep with one eye open in the public cloud, like, okay, what are they going to, which value of mine are they grab next? >> You're spot on. And again, this is where I think, the power of what an Edge to cloud platform like HPE GreenLake can do for our customers, because it is that sort of, I mentioned it, one plus one equals three kind of scenario for our customers so. >> So we can leave your customers, last question, Keith. I know we're only on day one of the main summit, the partner growth summit was yesterday. What's the feedback been from the customers and the ecosystem in terms of validating the direction that HPE is going? >> Well, I think the fantastic thing has been to hear from our customers. So I mentioned in my keynote recently, we had Liberty Mutual and we had Texas Children's Hospital, and they're implementing HPE GreenLake in a variety of different ways, from a private cloud standpoint to a data center consolidation. They're seeing sustainability goals happen on top of that. They're seeing us take on management for them so they can take their limited resources and go focus them on innovation and value added scenarios. So the flexibility and cost that we're providing, and it's just fantastic to hear this come to life in a real customer scenario because what Texas Children is trying to do is improve patient care for women and children like who can argue with that. >> Nobody. >> So, yeah. It's great. >> Awesome. Dave and I have a couple of exciting guests we're proud to introduce you to. Please, welcome back to "theCUBE," John Schultz, the EVP and general counsel of HPE. Great to have you back here. And Kay Firth-Butterfield, the head of AI and machine learning at the World Economic Forum. Kay, thank you so much for joining us. >> Thank you. It's an absolute pleasure. >> Isn't it great to be back in person? >> Fantastic. >> John, we were saying that. >> Fantastic. >> Last time you were on "theCUBE", it was Cube Virtual. Now, here we are back. A lot of news this morning, a lot's going on. The Edge to Cloud Conferences is the theme this year. In today's Edge to Cloud world, so much data being generated at the edge, it's just going to keep proliferating. AI plays a key role in helping to synthesize that, analyze large volumes of data. Can you start by talking about the differences of the two? The synergies, what you see? >> Yeah. Absolutely. And again, it is great to be back with the two of you, and great to be with Kay, who is a leading light in the world of AI, and particularly, AI responsibility. And so, we're going to talk a little bit about that. But really, this synergistic effect between data and AI, is as tight as they come. Really, data is just the raw materials by which we drive actionable insight. And at the end of the day, it's really about insights, and that speed to insight to make the difference. AI is really what is powering our ability to take vast amounts of data. Amounts of data that we'd never conceived of, being able to process before and bring it together into actionable insights. And it's simplest form, right? AI is simply making computers do what humans used to do, but the power of computing, what you heard about frontier on the main stage today, allows us to use technology to solve problems so complex that it would take humans millions of years to do it. So, this relationship between data and AI, it's incredibly tight. You need the right raw materials. You need the right engine, that is the AI, and then you will generate insights that could really change the world. >> So, Kay, there's a data point from the World Economic Forum which really caught my attention. It says the 15.7 billion of GDP growth is going to be a result of AI by 2030, 15.7 billion added. That includes the dilutive effects where we're replacing humans with machines. What is driving this in this incremental growth? >> Well, I think obviously, it's the access to the huge amounts of data that John pointed out. But one of the things that we have to remember about, AI is that actually, AI is pretty dumb unless you give it nice, clean, organized data. And so, it's not just all data, but it's data that has been through a process that enables the AI to gain insights from it. And so, what is it? It's the compute power, the ever increasing compute power. So, in the past, we would never have thought that we could use some of the new things that we're seeing in machine learning, so even deep learning. It's only been about for a small length of time, but it's really with the compute power, with the amount of data, being able to put AI on steroids, for luck of a better analogy. And I think it's also that we are now in business, and society, being able to see some of the benefits that can be generated from AI. Listening to Oakridge talk about the medical science advances that we can create for human beings, that's extraordinary. But we're also seeing that across business. >> That's why I was going to add. As impressive as those economic figures are in terms of what value it could add from a pure financial perspective? It's really the problems that could be solved. If you think about some of the things that happened in the pandemic, and what virtual experience allowed with a phone or with a tablet to check in with a doctor who was going to curate your COVID test, right? When they invented the iPhone, nobody thought that was going to be the use. AI has that same promise, but really on a macro global scale, some of the biggest problems we're trying to solve. So, huge opportunity, but as we're going to talk about a little later, huge risk for it to be misused if it's not guided and aimed in the right direction. >> Absolutely. >> That's okay. Maybe talk about that? >> Well, I was just going to come back about some of the benefits. California has been over the last 10 years trying to reduce emissions. One wildfire, absolutely wiped out all that good work over 10 years. But with AI, we've been developing an application that allows us to say, "Tomorrow, at this location, you will have a wildfire. So, please send your services to that location." That's the power of artificial intelligence to really help with things like climate change. >> Absolutely. >> Is that a probability model that's running somewhere? >> Yeah. Absolutely >> So, I wanted to ask you, but a lot of AI today, is modeling that's done, and the edge, you mentioned the iPhone, with all this power and new processors. AI inferencing at the edge in real time making real time decisions. So, one example is predicting, the other is there's actually something going on in this place. What do you see there? >> Yeah, so, I mean, yes we are using a predictive tool to ingest the data on weather, and all these other factors in order to say, "Please put your services here tomorrow at this time." But maybe you want to talk about the next edge. >> Yeah. Yeah. Well, and I think it's not just grabbing the data to do some predictive modeling. It's now creating that end-to-end value chain where the actions are being taken in real time based on the information that's being processed, especially out at the edge. So, you're ending up, not just with predictive modeling, but it's actually transferring into actual action on the ground that's happening... You know, we like to say automagically. So, to the point where you can be making real time changes based on information that continues to make you smarter and smarter. So, it's not just a group of people taking the inputs out of a model and figuring out, okay now what am I going to do with it? The system end-to-end, allows it to happen in a way that drives a time to value that is beyond anything we've seen in the pas- >> In every industry? >> In every industry. >> Absolutely, and that's something we learned during the pandemic, one of the many things. Access to real time data to actually glean those insights that can be acted on, is no longer a nice to have. >> No. >> For companies in any industry they've got to have that now, they've got to use it as their competitive advantage. Where do you see when you're talking with customers, John? Where are they in that capability and leveraging AI on steroids, as I said? >> Yeah. I think it varies. I mean, certainly I think as you look in the medical field, et cetera, I mean, I think they've been very comfortable, and that continues to up. The use cases are so numerous there, that in some ways we've only scratched the surface, I think. But there's a high degree of acceptance, and people see the promise. Manufacturing's another area where automation and relying on some form of what used to be kind of analog intelligence, people are very comfortable with. I would say candidly, I would say the public sector and government is the furthest behind. It may be used for intelligence purposes, and things like that, but in terms of advancing overall, the common good, I think we're trailing behind there. So, that's why things like the partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and some of the other things we're seeing. That's why organizations like the World Economic Forum are so important, because we've got to make sure that this isn't just a private sector piece, It's not just about commercialization, and finding that next cost savings. It really should be about, how do you solve the world's biggest problems and do in a way that's smarter than we've ever been able to do it before? >> It's interesting, you say public sectors is behind because in some respects, they're really advanced, but they're not sharing that because it's secretive. >> Yeah. >> Right? >> That's very fair. >> Yeah. So, Kay, the other interesting stat, was that by 2023 this is like next year, 6.8 trillion will be spent on digital transformation. So, there's this intersection of data. I mean, to me, digital is data. But a lot of it was sort of, we always talk about the acceleration 'cause of the pandemic. If you weren't a digital business you were out of business, and people sort of rushed, I call it the force-march to digital. And now, are people stepping back and saying, "Okay, what can we actually do?" And maybe being more planful? Maybe you could talk about the sort of that roadmap? >> Sure. I think that that's true. And whilst I agree with John, we also see a lot of small... A lot of companies that are really only at proof of value for AI at the moment. So, we need to ensure that everybody, we take everybody, not just the governments, but everybody with us. And one of the things I'm often asked, is if you're a small or medium-sized enterprise, how can you begin to use AI at scale? And I think that's one of the exciting things about building a platform. >> That's right. >> And enabling people to use that. I think that there is also, the fact that we need to take everybody with us on this adventure because AI is so important. And it's not just important in the way it's currently being used. But if we think about these new frontier technologies like Metaverse, for example. What's the Metaverse except an application of AI? But if we don't take everybody on the journey now, then when we are using applications in the Metaverse, or building applications in the Metaverse what happens at that point? >> Think about if only certain groups of people or certain companies had access to wifi, or had access to cellular, or had access to a phone, right? The advantage and the inequality would be manifest, right? We have to think of AI and super computing in the same way, because they are going to be these raw ingredients that are going to drive the future. And if they are not, if there isn't some level of AI equality, I think the potential negative consequences of that, are incredibly high, especially in the developing world. >> Talk about it from a responsibility perspective? Getting everybody on board is challenging from a cultural standpoint, but organizations have to do it as you both articulated. But then every time we talk about AI, we've got to talk about it's used responsibly. Kay, what are your thoughts there? What are you seeing out in the field? >> Yeah, absolutely. And I started working in this in about 2014 when there were maybe a handful of us. What's exciting for me, is that now you hear it on people's lips, much more. But we still got a long way to go. We still got that understanding to happen in companies that although you might, for example, be a drug discovery company, you are probably using AI not just in drug discovery but in a number of backroom operations such as human resources, for example. We know the use of AI and human resources is very problematic. And is about to be legislated against, or at least be set up as a high risk problem use of AI by the E.U. So, across the E.U, we know what happened with GDPR that it became something that lots and lots of countries used, and we expect the AI Act to also become used in that way. So, what you need, is you need not only for companies to understand that they are gradually becoming AI companies, but also that as part of that transformation, it's taking your workers with you. It's helping them understand that AI won't actually take their jobs, it will merely help them with reskilling or working better in what they do. And they think it's also in actually helping the board to understand. We know lots of boards that don't have any clue about AI. And then, the whole of the C-suite and the trickle all down, and understanding that at the end, you've got tools, you've got data, and you've got people, and they all need to be working together to create that functional, responsible AI layer. >> When we think about it, really, when we think about responsible AI, really think about at least three pillars, right? The first off, is that privacy aspect. It's really that data ingestion part, which is respecting the privacy of the individuals, and making sure that you're collecting only the data you should be collecting to feed into your AI mechanism, right? The second, is that inclusivity and equality aspect. We've got to make sure that the actions that are coming out, the insights were generate, driving, really are inclusive. And that goes back to the right data sets. It goes back to the integrity in the algorithm. And then, you need to make sure that your AI is both human and humane. We have to make sure we don't take that human factor out and lose that connection to what really creates our shared humanity. Some of that's transparency, et cetera. I think all of those sound great. We've had some really interesting discussions about in practice, how challenging that's going to be, given the sophistication of this technology. >> When you say transparency, you're talking about the machine made a decision. I have to see how, understand how the machine made a decision. >> Algorithmic transparency. Go ahead. >> Algorithmic transparency. And the United States is actually at the moment considering something which is called the Algorithmic Accountability Act. And so, there is a movement to particularly where somebody's livelihood is affected. Say, for example, whether you get a job, and it was the algorithm that did the pre-selection in the human resources area. So, did you get a job? No, you didn't get that job. Why didn't you get that job? Why did the algorithm- >> A mortgage would be another? >> A mortgage would be another thing. And John was talking about the data, and the way that the algorithms are created. And I think, one great example, is lots of algorithms are currently created by young men under 20. They are not necessarily representative of your target audience for that algorithm. And unless you create some diversity around that group of developers, you're going to create a product that's less than optimal. So, responsible AI, isn't just about being responsible and having a social conscience, and doing things, but in a human-centered way, it's also about your bottom line as well. >> It took us a long time to recognize the kind of the shared interest we have in climate change. And the fact that the things that are happening one part of the world, can't be divorced from the impact across the the globe. When you think about AI, and the ability to create algorithms, and engage in insights, that could happen in one part of the world, and then be transferred out, not withstanding the fact, that most other countries have said, "We wouldn't do it this way, or we would require accountability. You can see the risk." It's what we call the race to the bottom. If you think about some of the things that have happened over the time in the industrial world. Often, businesses flock to those places with the least amount of safeguards that allow them to go the fastest, regardless of the collateral damage. I think we feel that same risk exists today with AI. >> So, much more we could talk about, guys, unfortunately, we are out of time. But it's so amazing to hear where we are with AI, where companies need to be. And it's the tip of the iceberg.
