This is The Cube live in Barcelona, Spain for Cisco live 2018 in Europe. I'm John Furrier, co-host of The Cube with my co-host this week, Stu Miniman, the coupon analyst. Our next guest is Denny Trivette, who's the Vice President of Ecosystem Sales Acceleration Global Partner Organization at Cisco. Denny welcome to The Cube. >> Thank you very much glad to be here. >> So you have a good job. You have to on the business side look at commercializing all this great technology everyone's learning. It's important because there's big numbers, billions of dollars involved in the businesses. Depending on who you talk to, this vendor does a billion dollars with Cisco. This vendor does a billion dollars with supplies at Cisco so a lot of happy customers, but an evolving ecosystem. What's the business outlook from your stand point? Obviously there's change happening, positive change at Cisco. What's going on in the business side? Is it bumpy, is it smooth? Give us the weather report. >> Yeah I think first point though you said I have a good job for Cisco? I have a great for Cisco. I love what we do cause our job is all about how do we leverage the full power of the Cisco partner ecosystem to really build new connections that will drive and accelerate our solutions to all kinds of customers. When you say bumpy areas, absolutely. >> Yeah >> There's always going to be trends and different moves in the market or what have you. For us, what we're able to do is expand the opportunity that Cisco is focused on. We're not just selling products, technologies, and architectures into an IT buying center. Now we're opening up buying centers for our good friends at App D or getting into the line of business and engaging in new conversations that unlock real value. >> You guys have always been a company that has a heritage of enabling technologies. You enable other people to create value and speeds and fees and great tech. The question for you is you mentioned in your title sales acceleration, you can't be in a more pressing time now where words like time to value are faster. Customers want more value up front faster than ever before. So that kind of puts the pressure on the business front. How do you get that done? Is there a certain business model that you guys evolved to? Is it tried and true? Can you explain the business model of how you get to that value faster with partners? >> I think it's a very important point because back in the day we used to celebrate successes, and a success was hey we just launched a new joint integration. That was a success, and we'd celebrate that. In the end nobody monetized that, so in the end that doesn't matter. Now what we're trying to figure out is how do we truly unlock the power of these relationships? There's two transformations we've driven. One is how we engage multiple partners in new sales motions. We've never done that effectively as an industry quite frankly and we've launched things like ACES and it stands for accelerating Cisco ecosystem sales. Which is a fully built framework for better engaging multiple partners so that we can actually do all of the things that we all know we need to do as a business to drive and accelerate success, but we do it highly effectively. There's multiple steps to it. >> John: And multiple stake holders too. >> A lot of stake holders yeah. And by the way a big part of it is make sure you actually have agreement from the executive decision makers from the different partners that we're going to go down these paths in the first point. So very very important. >> Soon you can automate that away, it's like deb ops culture, right? >> Actually no that's so real. We work with this one partner who built out the whole ACES framework. Then they built out ACES two dot oh, sorry ACES at scale. Now they just said hey Denny we're building out ACES at hyper scale where we're going to automate this whole process so that we can drive path the revenue plans with close loop selling etcetera. So it's a game changer for us. >> So this is a real, this is actually happening. >> This is actually happening, and when we engage like this with our partners two things happen we accelerate the whole time to revenue. We actually get the sales teams better aligned. We get executive commitment. We engage customers sooner and then we can sell more effectively. For our customers, they love it because now we're bringing the power of the ecosystem in an organized fashion. They see hey these guys really understand my business issues and they're committed to solving those problems with us. >> And they probably make more money too because when you have that efficiency that drops right to the bottom line. >> Yeah that's important for us and them. And by the way part of the business model transformation that we're driving that's important is I also realized we can no longer live in a siloed world. We use to silo all of our resources. We had big teams on this partner, that partner, this technology, this architecture and what we did is we moved our sales acceleration team into a shared tool model. So now we can dynamically allocate talent to whatever the next big thing is. So a hyper flex, the latest launch, or whatever, great. We can dynamically move the right talent to engage the right partners in the right sales motions. >> That's very elastic, very cool. >> Denny, you know we've been watching Cisco's transformation for years. Obviously, networking is still at the core but security, we go to so many shows. We see Cisco in the container space, lots of open stores. Software acquisitions, how's that transformation of Cisco changing and proliferating the various ecosystem models that you have to build? >> This is one of those things that we struggle with in certain days cause if Cisco moves into a new space where we acquire a new company, not only does the sales motion sometimes change and who we sell to change. It's maybe a new buying center an applications dev ops cloud development, but also the ecosystem changes. So we have to get smart about who we bring in. So for instance back in the day Cisco and a reseller we could go sell to the networking buying center, the data center buying center, but now all of a sudden if we want to have a conversation around dev ops and then bring in the line of business, IT and these other dev ops, Cisco and our resellers we can't really sit at the table and bring as much value there. So there's different vendors, like consultancies out there. Companies like Zentars that can actually come to the table and help build the bridge between IT and the line of business, facilitate and drive that conversation. So to your question, we're engaging new partners like that. They don't resell anything but they're a key influence there to connect the multiple different buying centers. There helping Cisco and our resellers generate opportunities we wouldn't have gotten before. >> To follow up on the channel I remember back when converge infrastructure started. There were Cisco channel partners that built whole data center practices. All new lines of business when they were building it. How do you help build that kind of multiply effect for some of your partners to help really accelerate them, drive new businesses? Think about there are so many new areas that Cisco is tapping into. How do you help move that change? People are resistant to change. They're worried about cloud. They're worried about oh you're taking away some of my existing lines of business. Will I make money? >> Actually when you think about digital transformation there's the cloud, there's analytics, there's security. There's so many technologies that come into play. Our resellers have to think about how do I build a practice that includes all of those different foundations. Working with one of my peers in Rob's organization he's got this person Andre Sintez. We're partnered up with them to build out this new model where we can actually help assess our partners to see where they are against all these critical foundational pieces, and then build the training around it. It's not just training because a reseller has an option. If they're going to move into whatever this dev ops cloud space, whatever it happens to be, they have an option to build, buy, or partner. They can build the capability. Train there people, hire new people, etc. Buy a company that does that already, or partner with one of those consultancies or boutique systems integrator. That's where we're spending our time, is building those new connections. >> I'm wondering if you can comment on service providers too. Obviously it's been a big customer for Cisco before, also there's many times we've said the service provider can be the new channel for both Cisco and the partners. Do you look at that very differently than you do the enterprise? >> Service provider as a channel is a big motion without a doubt because they are in those accounts. They're selling in many cases what our customers want to consume in the consumption model that they want. It is critical that we play with them and that we play with them effectively. What's interesting is sometimes based on the verticals or the industries or the segments it's a different set of solutions. So sometimes it's not the motion that my team does by engaging the right ecosystem partners with them. The motion doesn't change as much, what changes is which customer or segment you're going after. Which partners really make sense and can they be delivered in the consumption model that you're looking at? So we might have to pick the right partners and the right solutions to drive. But once we do, we can still leverage a lot of the same practices. So ACES, sales blitzes, overdrives, vertical value plays, all these cool things that we do today could fit with a service provider or any other client. >> Do you guys just flex those resources and go wherever you need to go? Very elastic kind of like a cloud model. >> Absolutely. >> I got to ask you on the organizational front, do you guys have like a big pow wow with your partners? Is it like an annual summit that you do at Cisco live? How do you get your partners together? Is there like a >> Yes, yes, and yes to all of it >> How do you guys handle the partner relationships? >> Each event is a little bit different. Cisco live and here at Cisco live Barcelona, the incredible thing about this event is we have all the people in the world of solutions. The sponsors, the hardware vendors, software vendors, those vendors are here. Our resellers are here. Our sales teams are here. So this type of event we actually have a separate track. Here at Cisco live called the partner experience. Wendy Mars kicked it off this morning. In the room we had resellers, software vendors, hardware vendors, a bunch of different partner types in the room. Then we break out into different tracks. I just left the solution partner forum where it was no resellers, it was software vendors and all these folks. We had an intimate conversation with them about how we're going to accelerate our business together with them as ecosystem partners. >> So you do the big tent events during the lives. You do your own little events with them as well probably with your own teams like a sales kick off? >> Yup and then probably the most popular events is when we regionalized it and do things like partner connections. So like show Shark Tank, we can bring in four or five of these ecosystem partners and any one particular vertical or architecture and have them pitch to a roomful >> Can we film it? >> Yeah we should. I would love to. >> That would be great Cube action. >> That would be awesome. >> You're really on the front lines, super innovation. I love this notion of codifying and putting frameworks around the systems cause that essentially makes it more efficient and you can then flex for these unique situations cause not every deploy is different. A partner might have different vertical requirements. So you can't boiler plate this. It's really one of those things where complexity you have to address at the field level. >> You do exactly. To your point if we can have certain frameworks, so say like a sales blitz. Real actionable item. A sales blitz is where we do a lunch and learn, a cold calling blitz, then we have basically day two support where we can follow up on leads that come from it. We built a sales blitz originally with a partner like a live action, that plays with us in SD Win. Then we said hey this works in data protection. Lets leverage it for a calm vault or veeam. Hey this also works in a healthcare application. So as we build out these best practices we build them in a way so that they can be scaled across any architecture or any partner or any solution type. We also build it so it can be high touched where I use resources of my own to manage it, low touched we just coach em on how to do it, or no touch here it is it's in a box you take it and you go build it yourself. All the best practices are there. >> So this must have a real impact on personnel. Have you seen higher attainments and retention with sales people? It sounds motivating. >> What's so funny and this is a fact, I just heard last week, one of my teams came up and they said hey Denny I talked to one of our new hires, they came into Cisco early in career first and they were on one of these flex teams and they've already done three different projects in three different areas. In the past they would've been hired in the hyper flex team or whatever. Now they've done whatever, hyper flex, the network intuitive launch, and then they did something around the Apple launch. How cool is that from an experience... >> So the old waterfall model of group to group to group now they can essentially go wherever the agile needs are. >> Exactly. >> Denny I know it's tough to choose favorites, but what's buzzing in your partner ecosystem? What's the area where they're seeing big opportunity, customers are getting excited about? >> A lot of the stories that tell the best are these customer experience stories. If I think of a partner called Local Measure for instance, they're a software vendor. They play in retail and other areas. These stories get exciting. Let me tell you real quick. First of all when we partner with these folks we take a customer in approach. We don't go in there and pitch product like, Local Measure by the way works with Marakey and Spark. We don't go into that line of business fire and pitch Marakey and Spark. It probably doesn't come up until later in the conversation. We really start about hey, what's your true business issue, and typically in a retailer they might want to do two things. They might want to accelerate or increase the engagement of the customers so they get better loyalty and repeat buyers. They want people to come back to their amusement park or their retailer or whatever it happens to be, and ultimately the way Local Measure can do that, they can say hey we can change the engagement in the store. For instance if you go into a shoe store and you send out a tweet that says hey the service stinks at this shoe store, they intercept that through Twitter, or Facebook, or Instagram and then they can correlate that information with location from a Marakey network and then send it to the store and say hey store associate via Spark message. There's a person, they're in your New York City store. They're standing right in this spot right now. They just sent out this tweet. Here's their profile. Go talk to them, they want help. That engagement is very different than other types of engagements, but when we tell those stories people see the importance of connecting technologies together, cause it's multiple technologies, but also bridging the conversation between the line of business, that retails store person, and IT. You can't do it either or, you got to bring em together and deliver that type of outcome. >> Well, we're always looking for some good stories on The Cube so if you've got any great stories to tell with customers we'd love to see these cases that can really point to the future. >> For things like this, events like this we collected 23 different win stories here and Europe from a small set of ecosystems and partners. So we can bring some of these guys on and have them tell their stories directly to you. >> We love those tech athletes. They're out making it happen every day. Denny great to see you and (unintelligible) the Cube and taking the time. John, how was your lunch? >>My lunch was great. Wasn't very complex like it is today, so it was very easy, >>Appropriate for the conversation we're about >>To have. Great, great guests coming up Cube alumni and great question around complexity and how is wellbeing teams be good? >>Yes. And, and and on that note, let's welcome John from DeWit as well as Danny from Inox. I swear I'll be able to say that right by the end of this. Thank you guys so much for being here. How's the show going for you? >>Excellent so far. It's been a great, a great event. You know, back back to pre Covid days, >>You're still smiling day three. That's an awesome sign. John, what about you? >>Fantastic. It's, it's been busier than ever >>That that's exciting. I, I think we certainly feel that way here on the cube. We're doing dozens of videos, it's absolutely awesome. Just in case. So we can dig in a little deeper throughout the rest of the segment just in case the audience isn't familiar, let's get them acquainted with your companies. Let's start with do it John. >>Yeah, thanks Savannah. So do it as a global technology company and we're partnering with deleted cloud providers around the world and digital native companies to provide value and solve complexity. John, to your, to your introductory point with all of the complexities associated with operating in the cloud, scaling a business in the cloud, a lot of companies are just looking to sort of have somebody else take care of that problem for them or have somebody they can call when they run into, you know, into problems scaling. And so with a combination of tech, advanced technology, some of the best cloud experts in the world and unlimited tech support or we're offloading a lot of those problems for our customers and we're doing that on a global basis. So it's, it's an exciting time. >>I can imagine pretty much everyone here on the show floor is dealing with that challenge of complexity. So a couple customers for you in the house. What about you Danny? >>I, I come from a company which operates in a financial industry market. So we essentially a global broker, financial trading broker. Which what this means for those people who don't really understand, essentially we allow clients to be able to trade digitally and speculate with different pricing, pricing tools online. We offer a different products for different type of clients. We have institutional clients, we've got our affiliates, partners programs and we've got a retail clients and this is where AWS and Doit comes handy allows us to offer our products digitally across the globe. And one of the key values for us here is that we can actually offer a product in regions where other people don't. So for example, we don't compete in North America, we don't compete in EME in Europe, but we just do it in AWS to solve our complex challenges in regions that naturally by, depending on where they base, they have like issues and that's how we deliver our product. >>And which regions, Latin >>America, Latin, the entire Africa, subcontinent, middle East, southeast Asia, the culture is just demographic is different. And what you used to have here is not exactly what you have over there. And obviously that brings a lot of challenges with onboarding and clients, deposit, trading activities, CDN latency, all of >>That stuff. It's interesting how each region's different in their, their posture with the cloud. Someone roll their own, someone outta the box. So again, this brings up this theme this year guys, which is about end to end seeing purpose built like specialty solutions. A lot of solutions going end to end with data makes kind of makes it more complicated. So again, we got more complexity coming, but the greatest the cloud is, you can abstract that away. So we are seeing this is a big opportunity for partners to innovate. You're seeing a lot of joint engineering, a lot more complexities coming still, but still end to end is the end game so to speak. >>A absolutely John, I mean one, one of the sort of ways we describe what we try to do for our customers like Equinox is to be your co-pilot in the cloud, which essentially means, you know, >>What an apt analogy. >>I think so, yeah, >>Well, well >>Done there. I think it works. Yvanna. Yeah, so, so as I mentioned, these are the majority or almost all of our customers are pretty sophisticated tech savvy companies. So they don't, you know, they know for most, for the most part what they're trying to achieve. They're approaching scale, they're at scale or they're, or they're through that scale point and they, they just wanna have somebody they can call, right? They need technology to help abstract away the complex problem. So they're not doing so much manual cloud operational work or sometimes they just need help picking the next tech right to solve the end to end use case that that they're, that they're dealing with >>In business. And Danny, you're rolling out solutions so you're on, you're on the front lines, you gotta make it easier. You didn't want to get in the weeds on something that should be taken care of. >>Correct. I mean one of the reasons we go do it is you need to, in order to involve do it, you need to know your problems, understand your challenges, also like a self review only. And you have to be one way halfway through the cloud journey. You need to know your problems, what you want to achieve, where you want to end up a roadmap for the next five years, what you want to achieve. Are we fixing or developing a building? And then involve those guys to come and help you because they cannot just come with magic one and fix all your problems. You need to do that yourself. It's not like starting the journey by yourself. >>Yeah. One thing that's not played up in this event, I will say they may, I don't, they missed, maybe Verner will hit it tomorrow, but I think they kind of missed it a little bit. But the developer productivity's been a big issue. We've seen that this year. One of the big themes on the cube is developer productivity, more velocity on the development side to keep pace with what's on, what solutions are rolling out the customers. And the other one is skills gap. So, and people like, and people have old skills, like we see VMware being bought by Broadcom for instance, got a lot of IT operators at VMware, they gotta go cloud somewhere. So you got new talent, existing talent, skill gaps, people are comfortable, yet the new stuff's there, developers gotta be more productive. How do you guys see that? Cuz that's gonna be how that plays now, it's gonna impact the channel, the partnership relationship, your ability to deliver. >>What's your reaction to that first? Well I think we obviously have a tech savvy team. We've got developers, we've got dev, we've got infrastructure guys, but we only got so much resource that we can afford. And essentially by evolving due it, I've doubled our staff. So we got a tech savvy senior solution architects which comes to do the sexy stuff, actually develop and design a new better offering, better product that makes us competitive. And this is where we involved, essentially we use the due IT staff as an staff employees that our demand is richly army of qualified people. We can actually cherry pick who we want for the call to do X, Y, and Z. And they're there to, to support you. We just have to ask for help. And this is how we fill our gap from technical skills or budget constrained within, you know, within recruitment. >>And I think, I think what, what Danny is touching on, John, what you mentioned is, is really the, the sort of the core family principle of the company, right? It's hard enough for companies like Equinox to hire staff that can help them build their business and deliver the value proposition that they're, that they see, right? And so our reason for existence is to sort of take care of the rest, right? We can help, you know, operate your cloud, show you the most effective way to do that. Whether they're finops problems, whether they're DevOps problems, whether dev SEC ops problems, all of these sort of classic operational problems that get 'em the way of the core business mission. You're not in the business of running the cloud, you're in the business of delivering customer value. We can help you, you know, manage your cloud >>And it's your job to do it. >>It is to do it >>Can, couldn't raise this upon there. How long have y'all been working together? >>I would say 15 months. We took, we took a bit of a conservative approach. We hope for the baseball, prepare for the worst. So I didn't trust do it. I give them one account, start with DEF U A C because you cannot, you just have to learn the journey yourself. So I think I would, my advice for clients is give it the six months. Once you establish a relationship, build a relationship, give them one by one start slowly. You actually understand by yourself the skills, the capacity that they have. And also the, for me consultants is really important And after that just opens up and we are now involving them. We've got new project, we've got problem statement. The first thing we do, we don't Google it, we just say do it. Log a ticket, we got the team. You're >>A verb. >>Yeah. So >>In this case we have >>The puns are on list here on the Cuban general. But with something like that, it's great. >>I gotta ask you a question cuz this is interesting John. You know, we talked last year on the cube and, and again this is an example of how innovations playing out. If you look at the announcements, Adam Celski did and then sw, he had 13 or so announcements. I won't say it's getting boring, but when you hear boring, boring is good. When you start getting into these, these gaps in the platforms as it grows. I won't say they was boring cause that really wasn't boring. I like the data >>Itself. It's all fascinating, John, >>But it, but it's a lot of gap filling, you know, 50 connectors you got, you know, yeah. All glue layers being built in AI's critical. The match cloud is there. What's the innovation? You got a lot of gaps being filled, boring is good. Like Kubernetes, we say there boring means, it's being invisible. That means it's going away. What's the exciting things from your perspective in cloud here? >>Well, I think, I mean, boring is an interesting word to use cuz a company with the heritage of AWS is constantly evolving. I mean, at the core of that company's culture is innovation, technology, development and innovation. And they're building for builders as, as you know, just as well as I do. Yeah. And so, but what we find across our customer base is that companies that are scaling or at scale are using maybe a smaller set of those services, but they're really leveraging them in interesting ways. And there is a very long tail of deeper, more sophisticated fit for purpose, more specific services. And Adam announced, you know, who knows him another 20 or 30 services and it's happening year after year after year. And I think one of the things that, that Danny might attest to is, I, I spoke about the reason we exist and the reason we form the company is we hold it very, a very critical part of our mission is to stay abreast of all of those developments as they emerge so that Danny and and his crew don't have to, right? And so when they have a, a, a question about SageMaker or they have a question about sort of the new big data service that Adam has announced, we take it very seriously. Our job is to be able to answer that question quickly and >>Accurately. And I notice your shirt, if you could just give a little shirt there, ops, cloud ops, DevOps do it. The intersection of the finance, the tuning is now we're hearing a lot of price performance, cost recovery, not cost recovery, but cost management. Yeah. Optimizing. So we're seeing building scale, but now, now tuning almost a craft, the craft of the cloud is here. What's your reaction to that? It, >>It absolutely is. And this is a story as old as the cloud, honestly. And companies, you know, they'll, they'll, companies tend to follow the same sort of maturity journey when they first start, whether they're migrating to the cloud or they were born in the cloud as most of our customers are. There's a, there's a, there's an, there's an access to visibility and understanding and optimization to tuning a craft to use your term. And, and cost management truly is a 10 year old problem that is as prevalent and relevant today as it was, you know, 10 years ago. And there's a lot of talk about the economics associated with the cloud and it's not, certainly not always cheaper to run. In fact, it rarely is cheaper to run your business from any of the public cloud providers. The key is to do it and right size it and make sure it's operating in accordance and alignment with your business, right? It's okay for cloud process to go up so long as your top line is also >>Selling your proportion. You spend more cloud to save cloud. That's it's >>Penny wise, pound full. It's always a little bit, always a little bit of a, of a >>Dilemma on, on the cost saving. We didn't want to just save money. If you want to save money, just shut down your services, right? So it's about making money. So this is where do it comes, like we actually start making, okay, we spend a bit more now, but in about six months time I will be making more money. And we've just did that. We roll out the new application for all the new product offering host to AWS fully with the guys support, a lot of long, boring, boring, boring calls, but they're productive because we actually now have a better product, competitive, it's tailored for our clients, it's cost effective. And we are actually making money >>When something's invisible. It's working, you know, talking about it means it's, it's, it's operational. >>It's exactly, it's, >>Well to that point, John, one of the things we're most proud of in, you know, know this year was, was the launch of our product we called Flex Save, which essentially does exactly what you've described. It's, it's looking for automation and, and, and, and automatic ways of, yes. Saving money, but offering the opportunities to, to to improve the economics associated with your cloud infrastructure. >>Yeah. And improving the efficiency across the board. A hundred percent. It, it's, oh, it's awesome. Let's, and, and it's, it's my understanding there's some reporting and insights that you're able to then translate through from do it to your CTO and across the company. Denny, what's that like? What do you get to see working >>With them? Well, the problem is, like the CTO asked me to do all of that. It is funny he thinks that he's doing it, but essentially they have a excellent portal that basically looks up all of our instances on the one place. You got like good analytics on your cost, cost, anomalies, budget, costal location. But I didn't want to do that either. So what I have done is taken the next step. I actually sold this to the, to my company completely. So my finance teams goes there, they do it themselves, they log in, check, check, all the billing, the costal location. I actually has zero iteration with them if I don't hear anything from them, which is one of the benefits. But also there is lot of other products like the Flexe is virtually like you just click a finger and you start saving money just like that. Easy >>Is that easy button we've been talking about on >>The show? Yeah, exactly, exactly how it is. But there is obviously outside of the cost management, you actually can look at what is the resource you using do actually need it, how often you use it, think about the long term goal, what you're trying to achieve, and use the analytics to, and actually I have to say the analytics much better than AWS in, in, in, in cmp. It's, it's just more user friendly, more interactive as opposed to, you know, building the one in aws. >>It's good business model. Make things easy for your customers. Easy, simple >>To use. >>It's gotta be nice to hear John. >>Well, so first of all, thank you daddy. >>We, we work, but in all seriousness, you know, we, we work, Danny mentioned the trust word earlier. This is at the core of if we don't, if we're not able to build trust with our clients, our business is dead. It, it just doesn't exist. It can't scale. In fact, it'll go the opposite direction. And so we're, we work very, very hard to earn that trust and we're willing to start small to Danny's example, start small and grow. And that's why we're very, one of the things we're most proud of is, is how few customers tend to leave us year over year. We have customers that have been with us for 10 years. >>You know, Andy, Jesse always has, I just saw an interview, he was on the New York Times event in New York today as a CEO of Amazon. But he's always said in these build out phases, you gotta work backwards from the customer and innovate on behalf of the customer. Cause that's the answer that will always be a good answer for the outcome versus optimizing for just profit, you know what I'm saying? Or other things. So we're still in build out mode, >>You know, as a, as a, as a core fundamental sort of product concept. If you're not solving important problems for our customer, what are you, why, why are you investing? It just >>Doesn't make it. This is the beauty we do it. We actually, they wait for you to come to do the next step. They don't sell me anything. They don't bug me with emails. They're ready. When you're ready to make that journey, you just log a ticket and then come and help you. And this is the beauty. You just, it's just not your, your journey. >>I love it. Danny Winokur, AppDynamics | Cisco Live EU Barcelona 2020

Four days here in Barcelona, Spain for Cisco live 2020 kicking off the year. Great event. I'm Jafar way my co Stu Miniman, our next guest, Danny Winokur, general manager of app dynamics, part of Cisco and special keynoter headlining the event, the networking show headlining by the app development story. Any welcome to the cube. Thanks for joining us. Thank you. It's good to be here. So one of the big signals, I think it was a shot across the bow to the industry, but also internally within Cisco has been the multi-year movement around getting API APIs built into the products. You start to see dev ops become network ops. Now with app dynamics, digging down into the infrastructure provide great value, but in a DevOps way. This is, this is the top story in my mind. You've led the keynote, which was very unusual for Cisco. Was it planned that way? Tell us some of the background. >>Well, it was planned that way. And I think part of what we're recognizing is that in the world that we're now living in where applications have moved to become the center of the business, you have business initiatives encoded in applications and that's what actually drives the use of technology in the organization. So it really starts with the application. And Cisco of course recognizes that and that has implications for the way we think about the entire technology stack. And so we see it as an opportunity to actually make the infrastructure and the people that actually buy and work with the infrastructure, the infrastructure engineers and operations teams, network engineers and network operations teams, they become much more relevant by actually looking at how the technologies and the work that they do are actually placed within the context of the application and how that application and the experiences within it are delivering a business result to the larger organization. >>Yeah, and one of the big trends, how she's doing, I were early days in the cloud, watch Amazon rise up. No one kind of saw that common. Most of the insiders did, but API APIs were key, but the word dev ops was started around that time. Infrastructure as code makes a lot of sense. Programmable infrastructure. That's right. You guys picked up on that. We've been covering that for now for a four years around programmable networking and you guys have been just goes, been shifting the products, but during the keynote you mentioned biz dev ops, which I thought was a very fascinating stake in the ground. Could you explain what you meant by that? Because if I think what you're saying is true, this is now another layer of opportunity that takes advantage of all the scale. The agility. Efficiency. >>Yeah, that's right. That's right. So I mean, what's what's going on is companies that now say, okay, my business is now in my app. The app has become the business. They have to now figure out how do they iterate very, very quickly on that application. And in order to iterate very quickly, the business team, the development team and the operations teams need to work together in a closed loop operating model. Because if they don't work together closely, they have two big problems, right? One is the business initiatives which move very quickly, can't get encoded quickly enough in the application and the application falls behind and the business suffers. Number two, they can't produce winning experiences because executives like us sitting in a conference room with an idea for an experience are almost always wrong about what's going to work for the end-users. The way it works in the modern world and what we know from digital native organizations that have pioneered this is that you actually have to form user research and a hypothesis from it and it in your application and get it quickly in front of your users with real time measurement and telemetry and then you use that to inform yourself in real time around what's working and what's not. >>You reform your hypothesis, make that adjustment reimplementing code, get it back out and iterate and iterate and the more shots on goal that you're able to take with the velocity of iteration, the more likely you are to get to the winning experience. So biz dev ops is really around getting those three teams, the business team, the development team, and the operations team working together with velocity in a new operating model that allows you to actually gain the competitive advantage that's necessary in an experience driven application centric world where the infrastructure and development team and the business are now all working together in tandem, in lockstep. >>The antennae had really interesting stuff as we all know that the organizational construct in the silos often slow down that that innovation and growth we watched for years developers, they find their tools, they do their thing, but as you said, it's got to be connected with the business. I want to make sure I understand. We've seen somewhat places where some of the tooling actually is getting people together because they have common data. You give the business people things in their colors and languages as opposed to the developers. They need different things out of it, but it's a, it's a backbone or back plane buildings together. So are those business product owners or business leaders actually coming into and seeing things? Is it at that level, the >>really important point, right? The problem that we've seen in the traditional operating model is not only are the teams siloed, but the technologies and the data that they rely upon keep them siloed. And so as the changes in the market are pushing them to work together for the reasons I said, they need common tooling and common data sets. And so what we're actually doing at Cisco is connecting app dynamics to the tools that are beneath it in the stack. Like what we announced yesterday with the inner site inner site workload optimizer and what we've previously done with ACI for the software defined data center networking fabric so that you can actually have each team, each persona use a tool that they're comfortable with that's specialized for their domain, but the datasets are now connected. So it gives them a single source of truth that allows them, instead of finger-pointing when something goes wrong or they need to optimize, they're able to actually have a shared source of truth and they can say, okay, I understand my domain here, I understand my domain here, but they're telling me the same thing, and that makes it easier for them to collaborate in this closed loop, the operating model. >>Whereas it was harder to do that when they were looking at their separate tools and separate data. One of the things I want to get your thoughts on, Danny, is as coming from the app dynamics side now at Cisco, you've seen a lot of modern used the word modern applications. The modern architecture is evolving. People see the picture, they know what to do. Most enterprises outside of the the pioneers, they're like, okay, I love the idea of biz dev ops, but Hey, I'm just trying to figure out which cloud I'm going to use. Right. Okay. So take me through how you engage with that because you're kind of, you might be ahead of the curve on the thought process, but I'm just trying to crop the cloud and it's impacted me as a notarized. What do you say to that? What's that? What's your answer to that? >>I mean, what we see going on right now is that in almost every single organization that has their business now running in the apps, those apps are hybrid multi-cloud apps, right? They recognize that in order to iterate quickly on the front end of the application, they probably need to use some of the latest cloud based technologies, either in the public cloud or in a private cloud on premise us. But they also have other components of their architecture that are going to be using something more like web technologies or client server technologies or in some organizations still mainframe technologies for backend data access. And so you end up with this sort of diverse array of layered tech stacks across different deployment environments in a multi-cloud world. And they have to work together seamlessly. And so part of what we've done is innovate lenses within app dynamics that actually give you a view through that complexity so that you can focus on what really matters most. >>And that was yesterday's announcement of the experience journey map that we have from app dynamics, right? It compliments what we've done before with business transactions and business IQ and adds a new lens that is focused on the screens that the end users are actually seeing in their browser or on their mobile device. And it automatically uses AI and ML technology to map a screen by screen journey flow through the application that the user's actually seen and experienced seeing and experiencing. And within that screen-based view, it gives you business data like abandonment rate and it correlates it down to the technical performance of what's actually being served to the user on that screen so that you can quickly determine where are the technology issues across this broad hybrid multi-cloud estate. Where are they actually surfacing issues or not on the screens that your users are seeing. >>So you can now prioritize the warnings on the back end based on what your users really need you to address right away. So if I hear you correctly, what you're saying is essentially cause instrumentation. You mentioned that earlier data is critical. So what you're saying is you could have abandonment rates say's an app or whatever and say maybe there's a DDoS attack on, on a switch or a firewall. So I might want to scale that up with policy. So you're seeing, you're coordinating technical remedies or architectural changes based upon what you know, the business logic, is that what you're kind of getting at? That's exactly right. So we know from data that we have from our app attention index, that 50% of users are willing to pay more for a competitor's product if it performs and gives them a better experience. And worst yet 63% of users and the app potential index have told us that if they get a subpar digital experience, they're going to go out and actually not only leave but bad mouth, the experience that they had and spread ill will about your application. >>So what has to happen in that world is you have to actually relate your business performance data to the user experience within the screen, through the experience journey map into the backend application components, which is the business transaction and then down through intersite into the layers of the infrastructure where you can actually get into the chassies, the blades, the fans, the Dems and the network. So essentially it's like auto scale and concept that will, you know, in cloud that's right. Fly to the app level and a feature by feature basis. That's right. And you can do it exactly. You can do it within the context of the key experiences that have been prioritized as the ones that contribute the greatest impact of your business results. And you can work load optimize and scale infrastructure dynamically and automatically. Final, final point on this cause a good thread here. >>So final question is, okay, now prove it to me. How much money did I make? Can you guys tie that to actual dollars? Because then on the client's side, do they have to program then? No. So you can within app dynamics, through our business IQ capabilities, tell us through the interface of their product, what are the pieces of business data that are the key measures of your business success. It could be dollars, it could be cents, it could be skews, it could be a product ID, it could be an abandonment rate or a funnel conversion through your funnel. You tell us what are those metrics that you need and we will actually introspect, pull them out and give you a real time ROI. It is. That's what it is. So, so Denny, the thing I've been trying to chomp at the bid here, I'm agreeing with a lot of what you're saying. >>There was a trend that was all over everywhere that we went in 2019 that I heard and haven't heard you use a certain word. It's observability. Certain people are like one of the biggest trends of 2020 help us understand your viewpoint on observability what you're hearing from customers because much of the language you're talking about of that systems view resonates as what we're talking about. Observability so just not fond of the word or none. Not trying to jump on that bandwagon. It's a buzzword. What I'm talking about is full stack observability. That's exactly what it is. You can go from the business to the end user experience, the application, the compute infrastructure, the network infrastructure and the security domain that wraps at all and you can actually now see with telemetry that we're pulling in from each of those layers whether it's using app dynamics or using some of the instrumentation that Cisco has across those other infrastructure layers and security layers of the stack. >>We pull that all together with AI and ML produce insights and then provide an API that allows integration with systems for automation and action that is not only full stack observability it's full stack observability paired with the ability to implement an AI ops operating model that then supports a biz dev ops way of working for the company. You might want to throw in horizontal observability too because you know with cloud you've got horizontal scalable across deployment. Exactly across your deployment environment and from an application standpoint, everything from kind of traditional model is through microservices. Do things with serverless do are absolutely we have, we have agent technologies that take care of the very latest serverless technologies. We have things for Kubernetes cluster monitoring, we have support for CloudWatch and then going all the way back to the other side. Of course, traditional job applications.net applications back to mainframes IIB. >>We monitor and support all of that. It's the broadest array of visibility of what you're going to cabbage in the company working for you, the all the cool stuff. Cloud native Coobernetti's we've tried, we let, we like to be the cool kids. Magic questions. So I got to ask you, since you've got a good view up and down the stack and across multiple domains and workloads and clouds, what do you think, going into 2020 with this show and beyond, what is the most important story you think that people are talking about and what's the most important story that you think people should be talking about? I think the most important thing that's going on right now is figuring out how to connect across the different technologies and the different layers, right? We're coming from a place where there's naturally been a specialization within each of the domains. >>The whole point now is about multi domain and actually connecting the different layers of the technology stack to produce insights that allow for movement in this lock step higher velocity model. Because what we know from all of the data and all of the experience with customers is that the winners and an experience driven world are those that can actually implement with velocity, not break things and deliver well-designed, beautiful experiences. And in order to do that, you need to be able to connect these different technologies and get the teams that traditionally run them working together in a much more collaborative, what are people missing? What should we be people be focused on. Outside of that, what other areas that either the media or customers, what are the, what are some of the hidden gems out there that people should really pay attention to? Well, I think, I mean I think there's a lot of exciting innovation that is going on in some of the new cloud native technologies in the cloud native architectures. >>The other thing that I think is a little bit of a hidden thing that a lot of people haven't realized is that the cloud is great for some of the really high velocity, fast moving things, but it's not always the most efficient or the least, sorry, the most cost effective way, least least costly way of running everything and so we actually do see some recoil back to these hybrid environments where people are actually now running some cloud technologies on premise us and so I think that's an area to watch as we see some of the public cloud players, obviously out of the traditional players bringing cloud innovation, but running that on premises in a way that connects seamlessly to elastic scalable public cloud resources that work together in tandem. I guess last >>question I had for you, I think it was in your keynote, I heard you talk about customers using app D as being agents of transformation. Just what advice do you give them? You know, where are some of the stumbling blocks that if they don't have a conversation or understand a certain architecture that they're going to run into some issues? >>Yeah. So for us, an agent of transformation is the sort of notion of a change agent in the organization that recognizes the things we've been talking about where the world is going and is seeking to be that disruptive force of change inside the company. And in order to do that, what we have found is they're most successful when they get their hands on hard cold data, right? That's how you convince an organization. You show them the data and you connect the data and the technology to a business result. And so the most effective change agents have been able to go into the depths of the technology. They've been able to correlate data sets up and down the stack and then walk into the board room at the executive level and show in an undeniable evidence based way that these layers of technology are producing this business result and the organization needs to invest to accelerate that. And that's >>jail model too. You just get the data and iterate. Double down on absolutely what you want. It brings it all the way up to the boardroom. A New Service & Ops Experience
and II just think about how data could be customer experience value propositions operations that improve profitability and strategic options for the business as it moves forward but that means openly either we're thinking about how we embed data more deeply into our operations that means we must also think about how we're going to protect that data so the business does not suffer because someone got a hold of our data or corrupted our data or that a system just failed and we needed to restore that data very quickly now what we want to be able to do is we want to do that in a way that's natural and looks a lot like a cloud because we want that cloud experience in our data protection as well so that's we're going to talk about with Klum you know today a lot of folks think in terms of moving all the data into the cloud we think increasingly we have to recognize a cloud is not a strategy for centralizing data but rather distributing data and being able to protect that data where it is utilizing a simple common cloud like experience it's becoming an increasingly central competitive need for a lot of digital enterprises the first conversation we had was with pooja Kumar who John is a CEO and co-founder of Kaleo let's hear a pooja I had to say about data value data services and Kumi Oh poo John welcome to the show thank you Peter nice to be here so give us the update in clue so comeö is a two year old company right we just recently launched out of stealth so so far you know we we came out with innovative offering which is a SAS solution to go and protect on premises you know VMware and BMC environments that's what we launched out of style two months ago we won our best of show when we came out of stealth in in VMware 2019 but ultimately we started with a vision about you know protecting data irrespective of where it resides so it was all about you know you know on-premises on cloud and other SAS services so one single service that protects data irrespective of where it resides so far we executed on on-premises VMware and BMC today what we are announcing for the first time is our protection to go and protect applications natively built on AWS so these are applications that are natively built on AWS that loomio as a service will protect irrespective of you know them running you know in one region or cross region cross accounts and a single service that will allow our customers to protect native AWS applications the other big announcement we are making is a new round of financing and that is testament to the interest in the space and the innovative nature of the platform that we have built so when we came out of stealth we announced we had raised two rounds of financing 51 million dollars in series a and Series B rounds of financing today what we are announcing is a Series C round of financing of 135 million dollars the largest I would say Series C financing for a SAS enterprise company especially a company that's a little over two years old Oh congratulations that's gonna buy a lot of new technology and a lot of customer engagement but what customers as I said up from what customers are really looking for is they're looking for tooling and methods and capabilities that allow them to treat their data differently talk a bit about the central importance of data and how it's driving decisions of Cluny oh yes so fundamentally you know when we built out the the data platform it was about going after the data protection as the first use case on the platform longer term the journey really is to go from a data protection company to a data management company and this is possible for the first time because you have the public cloud on your side if you truly built a platform for the cloud on the public cloud you have this distinct advantage of now taking the data that you're protecting and really leveraging it for other services that you can enable the enterprise for and this is exactly what enterprises are asking for especially as they you know you know make a transition from on-premises to the public cloud where they're powering on more and more applications in the public cloud and they really you know sometimes have no idea in terms of where the data is sitting and how they can take advantage of all these data sources that ultimately protecting well no idea where the data is sitting take advantage of these data sources presumably facilitate new classes of integration because that's how you generate value out of data that suggests that we're not just looking at protection as crucial and important as it is we're looking at new classes of services they're going to make it possible to alter the way you think about data management if I got that right and what are those new services yes it's it's a journey as I said right so starting with you know again data protection it's also about doing data protection across multiple clouds right so ultimately we are a platform even though we are announcing you know AWS you know application support today we've already done VMware and BMC as we go along you'll see us kind of doing this across multiple clouds so an application that's built on the cloud running across multiple clouds AWS ashore and GCP or whatever it might be you see as kind of doing data protection across in applications in multiple clouds and then it's about going and saying you know can we take advantage of the data that we are protecting and really power on adjacent use cases you know there could be security use cases because we know exactly what's changing when it's changing there could be infrastructure analytics use cases because people are running tens of thousands of instances and containers and VMs in the public cloud and if a problem happens nobody really knows what caused it and we have all the data and we can kind of you know index it in the backend analyze in the backend without the customer needing to lift a finger and really show them what happened in their environment that they didn't know about right so there's a lot of interesting use cases that get powered on because you have the ability to index all the data here you have the ability to essentially look at all the changes that are happening and really give that visibility to the end customer and all of this one-click and automating it without the customer needing to do much I will tell you this that we've talked to a number of customers of Cuneo and the fundamental choice the clue Meo choice was simplicity how are you going to sustain that even as you add these new classes of services that is the key right and that is about the foundation we have built at the end of the day right so if you look at all of our customers that have you know on boarded today it's really the experience we're in less than you know 15 minutes they can we start enjoying the power of the platform and the backend that we have built and the focus on design that we have is ultimately why we are able to do this with simplicity so so when we when we think about you know all the things we do in the back end there's obviously a lot of complexity in the back end because it is a complex platform but every time we ask ourselves the question that okay from a customer perspective how do we make sure that it is one click and easy for them so that focus and that attention to detail that we have behind the scenes to make sure that the customer ultimately should just consume the service and should not need to do anything more than what they absolutely need to do so that they can essentially focus on what adds value to their business takes a lot of technology a lot of dedication to make complex things really simple absolutely whoo John Kumar CEO and co-founder of coolio thanks very much for being on the cube Thank You bigger great conversation with poo John data value leading to data services now let's think a little bit more about how enterprises ultimately need to start thinking about how to manifest that in a cloud rich world Chad Kenney is the vice president and chief acknowledges of Cuneo and Chad and I had an opportunity to sit down and talk about some of the interesting approaches that are possible because of cloud and very importantly to talk about a new announcement that clue miios making as they expand their support of different cloud types let's see what Chad had to say the notion of data services has been around for a long time but it's being upended recast reformed as a consequence of what cloud can do but that also means that cloud is creating new ways of thinking about data services new opportunities to introduce and drive this powerful approach of thinking about digital businesses centralized assets and to have that conversation about what that means we've got Chad Kenny who's a VP and chief technologists of comeö with us today Chad welcome to the cube thanks so much for having me okay so let's start with that notion of data services and the role the clouds going to play Kumi always looked at this problem this challenge from the ground up what does that mean so if you look at the the cloud as a whole customers have gone through a significant journey we've seen you know that the first shadow IT kind of play out where people decided to go to the cloud IT was too slow it moved into kind of a cloud first movement where people realize the power of cloud services that then got them to understand a little bit of interesting things that played out one moving applications as they exist were not very efficient and so they needed to react attack certain applications second SAS was a core way of getting to the cloud in a very simplistic fashion without having to do much of whatsoever and so for applications that were not core competencies they realized they should go SACEM for anything that was a core competency they needed to really reaaargh attack to be able to take advantage of those you know very powerful cloud services and so when you look at it if people were to develop applications today cloud is the default that you'd go towards and so for us we had the luxury of building from the cloud up on these very powerful cloud services to enable a much more simple model for our customers to consume but even more so to be able to actually leverage the agility and elasticity of the cloud think about this for a quick second we can take facilities break them up expand them across many different compute resources within the cloud versus having to take kind of what you did on prim in a single server or multitudes of servers and try to plant that in the cloud from a customer's experience perspective it's vastly different you get a world where you don't think about how you manage the infrastructure how you manage the service you just consume it and the value that customers get out of that is not only getting their data there which is the on-ramp around our data protection mechanisms but also being able to leverage cloud native services on top of that data in the longer term as we have this one common global index and platform what we're super excited today to announce is that we're adding in AWS native capabilities to be able to date and protect that data in the public cloud and this is kind of the default place where most people go to from a cloud perspective to really get their applications up and running and take advantage a lot of those cloud native services well if you're gonna be cloud native and promise to customers as you're going to support their workloads you got to be obviously on AWS so congratulations on that but let's go back to this notion of user word powerful mm-hmm AWS is a mature platform GCPs coming along very rapidly asher is you know also very very good and there are others as well but sometimes enterprises discover that they have to make some trade-offs to get the simplicity they have to get less function to get the reliability they have to get rid of simplicity how does qu mio think through those trade-offs to deliver that simple that powerful that reliable platform for something as important as data protection and data services in general so we wanted to create an experience that was single click discover everything and be able to help people consume that service quickly and if you look at the problem that people are dealing with a customer's talked to us about this all the time is the power of the cloud resulted in hundreds if not thousands of accounts within AWS and now you get into a world where you're having to try to figure out how do I manage all of these for one discover all of it and consistently make sure that my data which as you've mentioned is incredibly important to businesses today as protect it and so having that one common view is incredibly important to start with and the simplicity of that is immensely powerful when you look at what we do as a business to make sure that that continues to occur is first we leverage cloud native services on the back which are complex and and and you know getting those things to run and orchestrate are things that we build on the back end on the front end we take the customer's view and looking at what is the most simple way of getting this experience to occur for both discovery as well as you know backup for recovery and even being able to search in a global fashion and so really taking their seats to figure out what would be the easiest way to both consume the service and then also be able to get value from it by running that service AWS has been around well AWS in many respects founded the cloud industry it's it's you know certainly Salesforce and the south side but AWS is that first company to make the promise that it was going to provide this very flexible very powerful very a a July infrastructure as a service and they've done an absolutely marvelous job about it and they've also advanced the state of your technology dramatically and in many respects are in the driver's seat what trade offs what limits does your new platform face as it goes to AWS or is it the same Coolio experience adding now all of the capabilities of AWS it's a great question because I think a lot of solutions out there today are different parts and pieces kind of clump together well we built is a platform that these new services just get instantly added next time you log into that service you'll see that that available to you and you can just go ahead and log in to your accounts and be able to discover directly and I think that the vow the power of SAS is really that not only have we made it immensely secure which is something that people think about quite a bit with having you know not only data in flight but data at rest encryption and and leveraging really the cloud capabilities of security but we've made it incredibly simple for them to be able to consume that easily literally not lift a finger to get anything done it's available for you when you log into that system and so having more and more data sources in one single pane of glass and being able to see all the accounts especially in AWS where you have quite a few of those accounts and to be able to apply policies in a consistent fashion to ensure that you're you know compliant within the environment for whatever business requirements that you have around data protection is immensely powerful to our customers Chad Denny Chief Technologist plumie oh thanks very much for being on the tube thank you great conversation Chad especially interested in hearing about how klum EO is being extended to include AWS services within its overall data protection approach and obviously into Data Services but let's take a little bit more into that Columbia was actually generated and prepared a short video that we could take a look at that goes a little bit more deeply into how this is all going to work enterprises are moving rapidly to the cloud embracing sass for simplified delivery of key services in this cloud centric world IT teams can focus on more strategic work accelerating digital transformation initiatives for when it comes to backup IT is stuck designing patching and capacity planning for on-premise systems snapshots alone for data protection in the public cloud is risky and there are hundreds of unprotected SAS applications in the typical enterprise the move to cloud should make backup simpler but it can quickly become exponentially worse it's time to rethink the backup experience what if there were no hardware software or virtual appliances to size configure manage or even buy it all and by adding Enterprise backup public cloud workloads are no longer exposed to accidental data deletion and ransomware and Clube o we deliver secure data backup and recovery without any of that complexity or risk we provide all of the critical functions of enterprise backup d dupe and scheduling user and key management and cataloging because we're built in the public cloud we can rapidly deliver new innovations and take advantage of inherent data security controls our mission is to protect your data wherever it's stored the clew mio authentic SAS backup experience scales on demand to manage and protect your data more easily and efficiently and without things like cloud bills or egress charges luenell gives you predictable costs monitoring global backup compliance is far simpler and the built-in always-on security of Clue mio means that your data is safe take advantage of the cloud for backup with no constraints clew mio authentic SAS for the enterprise great video as we think about moving forward in the future and what customers are trying to do we have to think more in terms of the native services that cloud can provide and how to fully exploit them to increase the aggregate flexible both within our enterprises but also based on what our supplies have to offer we had a great conversation with wounds Young who is the CTO and co-founder of Clue mio about just that let's hear it wound had to say everybody's talking about the cloud and what the cloud might be able to do for their business the challenges there are a limited number of people in the world who really understands what it means to build for the cloud utilizing the cloud it's a lot of approximations out there but not a lot of folks are deeply involved in actually doing it right we've got one here with us today woo Jung is the CTO and co-founder of Cluny Oh woo and welcome to the cube how they theny here so let's start with this issue of what it means to build for the cloud now loomio has made the decision to have everything fit into that as a service model what is that practically mean so from the engineering point of view building our SAS application is fundamentally different so the way that I'll go and say is that at Combe you know we actually don't build software and ship software what we actually do it will service and service is what we actually ship to our customers let me give you an example in the case of Kumu they say backups fail like software sometimes fails and we get that failures >> the difference in between chromeo and traditional solutions is that if something were to fail we are the one detecting that failure before our customers - not only that when something fails we actually know exactly why you fail therefore we can actually troubleshoot it and we can actually fix it and operate the service without the customer intervention so it's not about the bugs also or about the troubleshooting aspect but it's also about new features if you were to introduce our new features we can actually do this without having customers upgraded code we will actually do it ourselves so essentially it frees the customers from actually doing all these actions because we will do them on behalf of them at scale and I think that's the second thing I want to talk about quickly is that the ability to use the cloud to do many of the things that you're talking about at scale creates incredible ranges of options that customers have at their disposal so for example AWS customers have historically used things like snapshots to provide it a modicum of data protection to their AWS workloads but there are other new options that could be applied if the systems are built to supply them give us a sense of how kkumeul is looking at this question of no snapshots versus something else yeah so basically traditionally even on the on print side of the things you have something called the snapshots and you had your backups right and there they're fundamentally different but if you actually shift your gears and you look at what they Wis offers today they actually offers the ability for you to take snapshots but actually that's not a backup right and they're fundamentally different so let's talk about it a little bit more what it means to be snapshots and a backup right so let's say there's a bad actor and your account gets compromised like your AWS account gets compromised so then the bad actor has access not only to the EBS volumes but also to the EBS snapshots what that means is that that person can actually go ahead and delete the EBS volume as well as the EBS snapshots now if you had a backup let's say you actually take a backup of that EBS volume to Kumu that bad actor will have access to the EBS volumes however they won't be able to delete the backup that we actually have in Kumu so in the whole thing the idea of Kumi on is that you should be able to protect all of your assets that being either a non-prime or AWS by setting up a single policies and these are true backups and not just snapshots and that leads to the last question I have which is ultimately the ability to introduce these capabilities at scale creates a lot of new opportunities that customers can utilize to do a better job of building applications but also I presume managing how they use AWS because snapshots and other types of servers can expand dramatically which can increase your cost how is doing it better with things like native backup services improve a customer's ability to administer their AWS spend and accounts so great question so essentially if you look at the enterprise's today obviously they have multiple you know on-premise data centers and also a different card provide that they use like AWS and Azure and also a few SAS applications right so then the idea is for cumin is to create this single platform where all of these things can actually be backed up in a uniform way where you can actually manage all of them and then the other thing is all doing it in the cloud so if you think about it if you don't solve the poem fundamentally in the cloud there's things that you end up paying later on so let's take an example right moving bytes moving bytes in between one server to the other traditionally basically moving bytes from one rack to the other it was always free you never had to pay anything for that certainly in the data center all right but if you actually go to the public cloud you cannot say the same thing right basically moving by it across aw s recent regions is not free anymore moving data from AWS to the on premises that's not fair either so these are all the things that any you know car provider service provider like ours has to consider and actually solve so that the customers can only back it up into Kumu but then they actually can leverage different cloud providers you know in a seamless way without having to worry all of this costs associated with it so kkumeul we should be able to back it up but we should be able to also offer mobility in between either AWS back at VMware or VNC so if I can kind of summarize what you just said that you want to be able to provide to an account to an enterprise the ability to not have to worry about the back-end infrastructure from a technical and process standpoint but not also have to worry so much about the back-end infrastructure from a cost and financial standpoint that by providing a service and then administering how that service is optimally handled the customer doesn't have to think about some of those financial considerations of moving data around in the same way that they used to I got that right I absolutely yes basically multiple accounts multiple regions multiple providers it is extremely hard to manage what Cuneo does it will actually provide you a single pane of glass where you can actually manage them all but then if you actually think about just and manageability it's actually you can actually do that by just building a management layer on top of it but more importantly you and we need to have a single data you know repository for you for us to be able to provide a true mobility between them one is about managing but the other thing is about if you're done if you're done it the real the right way it provides you the ability to move them and it leverages the cloud power so that you don't have to worry about the cloud expenses but kkumeul internally is the one are actually optimizing all of this for our customers wound jeong CTO and co-founder of columbia thanks senior software engineer at Microsoft also the co-chair with Kelsey Heights our great event record-setting attendance I'm John ferry your host with stew minimun Michele welcome to the cube thank you so much for having me so people don't know about if they might have watch the street if you had a stream you're on stage keynoting and managing the whole program here congratulations more attendees here at this event than all the other cube cause of cloud native combined shows the growth and interest in a new way to develop new way to engage with other developers and create value yeah kubernetes has been the heart of it explain cloud native con and cube con what's the difference because I love cloud native but what's this Cooper Denny's thing I love that too yeah was it related a intertwine Wayne take him into his plane there's a there's a really big kubernetes audience and community and they need time to engage and just like work with each other and learn from each other and that's where coop Connie came from soku-kun with the original conference and the first one was a November in Seattle in 2016 and I was actually at that wine was a few hundred people and it was just so small people were actually asking like what is a pod what is kubernetes which are fine questions asked today as well but it was everyone was asking this question nobody was past that point and then you know kubernetes was donated to the CNCs and there were also these other cloud native projects that came about in the space and so we wanted a conference that encompasses both all of the cloud native projects as well as serbs the kubernetes community as well so that's where both of them came from some of the other cloud native projects have their own conferences like Prometheus has prom time and that's been growing as well I think the last one was 200 people up from 70 the last so I gotta ask you because we even cover us we were there at the cube con I was actually having drinks with Luke Tucker at JJ we're like hey we should do this Cuban Eddie's thing and bolted onto the Linux Foundation so you're president creates with the whole team it's been fun to watch Wow yeah but it's the tale of two stories in the community in the industry companies that got funded and we're building open-source and our participants who are building projects out and then a new onboarding of new developers coming into the community a lot of first-timers here you're seeing a visibility into the success of cloud yeah and they're Rieger engaged so you got a lot of folks who have invested into the community and new entrants a migration into the community yeah what does that dynamic mean to the CN CF how is that impacting how you structure in the programming and what are some of the insiders talking about what it is what's the reality yeah I think a lot of it has to do with you know this is a really positive community and there are just like so many people working together and collaborating not just because they I mean it looks like nice to be in a positive community right but you kind of have to like these problems are really hard and it's good to learn from different organizations that have like come across these projects or problems starting in the in the space before and they'll come and collaborate I think some of the things that we've been talking about inside the community is how to actually how to onboard people so the kubernetes community is starting up a new mentorship program to help people that are new to the community start learning how to review code and then PR code and and be productive members in the community and whatever they whatever area they want miss Michelle want to hear about kind of some of the breadth and depth of the community here yeah you know we went there's so many announcements there's a bunch of wando's yeah it's a brand new project I think what it was four projects a year ago and it's now 14 you know right how does somebody's supposed to get their arms around it should they be beat me about that you know where should somebody start you know what do you recommend yeah start with the that's a great question by the way I think that people should start with with a solution to a problem they already have so just know that people have run into these problems before and you should just go into the thing that you know about first and then if that leads you to a different problem and there's a solution that the CNCs you know has already come across then you can go into and dive into the other palms for example I am really interested in kubernetes and have been in that space but I think tracing is really interesting too and I want to start learning how to incorporate that into my workflow as well so show you you're also one of the diversity chairs yeah for the event you talk about kind of a diverse global nature of this community yeah we are spread across all time zone so I actually want to share an experience I have as a sake lead in kubernetes so at first I really wanted to serve all of the time zones and so we have these weekly sick meetings at 9:30 a.m. Pacific and I was like no maybe we should have like alternate meetings like alternate weekly meetings for other time zones but after talking to those the people in the other time sounds like they're very far off actually like China Asia Pacific I realize that they're actually more interested in reading notes and watching videos which is something I didn't actually know you know it's it's you think like oh you have to serve every community in the same way but what I've learned and face to face yeah base to base exactly and that's not actually how that's not how actually everybody wants to interact and so that's been an interesting thing I've learned from the diverse nature and this in the space let's see a challenges I mean we've been talking we're just that reinvent last week at Amazon obviously the number of services that they're rolling out is pretty strong there's a leader in the cloud but as multi cloud becomes the choice for most most enterprises and businesses the service requirements the baseline is got to be established seeing your community rolling out a lot of great new services but storage old storage is transferring to machine learning in AI and you got I Oh tea right around the corner new new kinds of applications yeah okay it's changing the game on the old card storage and security obviously two important areas you got to store the data data is that the card of the value proposition and then security security how are you guys dealing with that those challenges those political grounds that people are have a lot of making a lot of money in an old storage you mean ship a storage drive and here's an architecture those are being disrupted yeah I think they I mean they'll continue to be disrupted I think people are just going to bring in new and new more new and new use cases and then people will come and meet them meet those customers where they are and people just have to change I guess get used to it yeah shifter die yeah I think that some that that we are getting to that point but I can't only time will tell we'll see what are something exciting things that you see from the new developers I just recognize some friends here that I've haven't that dark wondering the community are new and they're kind of like licking their chops like wow what an excitement I could feel value and I could have a distribution I got a community and I can make money and then Dan said you know project products profits you put the product profit motive right on the table but he's clear at the same not pay to play it's okay to have profits if you have a good product for me project I buy that but the new developers like that because as an end scoreboard what are you guys doing with that new community what survived there around those kinds of opportunities you guys creating any programs for them or yeah I think just to just they can get involved you know I think knowledge is power perspective is power also so being involved helps give you a perspective to see where those gaps are and then come up with those services that are profitable or those tools that are profitable and I think this space can be very lucrative based on the number of people he sponsors I think he said he said the show was wondering if you can comment when you're building the schedule how do you balance you know all those platinum sponsors versus you know some of the you know practitioner companies that are also getting involved how do you there are there are different levels of sponsorship right like you mentioned the events team has a sponsorship section or sponsorship team and they handle most of placing sponsors and all of that and so they'll get whatever level they want but actually Kelsey and I do a lot of research and see like what's happening in the community what's interesting what's new and and we'll find time to highlight that as well which one is research what's your role in Microsoft share with the audience what are you working on what's your day-to-day job is it just foundation work are you doing coding what do you coding what's your fav is the VI MX what do you prefer yes my work is 30% community and 70% engineering I really love engineering but I also really love the community and just getting these opportunities to give back you know build skills as well learning how to speak in front of people as well these are both valuable skills to learn and it gives me an opportunity to just give back what I've learned so I appreciate those but I mostly work on developer tools that are open source that help people use containers and kubernetes a little more easily so I work on projects like Helms drafts and Brigade and these are just like things that we've seen the pain points that we've experienced and we want to kind of share our solutions with them so draft is the one I've been working on a lot have you heard of drops okay let me do the two second draft is a tool for application developers to build containerized apps without really understanding or having to understand all of what is kubernetes and containers so that's my favorite space to know you know one of the things we look at coming in here is there's that balance between there's complexity but there's flexibility you know I've heard Kelsey talking about our on when I talk to customer they're like oh I love kubernetes because I take vault and I take envoy and I take all these different things that put together and it does what I want but a lot of people are daunted and they say oh I want to I want to just go to Microsoft Azure and they'll take care of that so how do you look at that and what is the balance that we should be looking for as an industry yeah we've been emphasizing in the community a lot on plug ability across contracts it's like a theme that I think almost every project hurts and a word that you'll hear a lot I'm sure you already have heard a lot and I think that's because you can't meet everyone's needs so you build this modular component that does one thing very well and then you learn how to extend it and or you give people the ability to extend it and so that's really great for scaling a project I I do really appreciate the clouds coming out all of them with their own managed services because it's hard to operate and understand all of these things it's it takes a lot of depth in knowledge context and just prior experience and so I think that'll just make it a lot easier for people to onboard onto these technologies I was going to ask you I was going to ask so you brought up fug ability we saw you know Netflix on stage was his phenomenal of the culture yeah dynamic I think that the Schumer important conversation you know something we've been talking about silage is a real part of what we're seeing tech being a part of but the the things that popped out at me in the keynote were service mesh and pluggable architecture so I want to get your thoughts for the folks that aren't there is that in the trenches and inside the ropes what is a pluggable architecture and what is a service mesh these days because you got lyft and uber and all these great companies who have built hyper scale and large-scale systems in open source and now our big tech success stories donating these kinds of approaches pluggable architectures and service man talk a minute to explain so pluggable architectures this is why you have one layer of your stuff there's a piece of software that does something does one thing very well but you know every I like to say that every company is a snowflake and that's okay and so you may have some workflow or need that is specific to your company and so we shouldn't limit you to just what we think is the right solution to a problem we should allow you to extend or extend these pieces of software with modular components or just extensible components that that work for you does that make a little more sense yeah I work on helm and we also have a pluggable architecture because we were just getting so many requests from the community and it didn't make sense to put everything in the core code based if we did if we accepted one thing it would really just interrupt somebody else's workflow so that that's helped us a lot in in my personal experience I really like plug water it's actually that means you can go build a really kick butt app yeah nail it down to your specifications but decoupler from a core or avoiding kind the old spaghetti code mindset but kind of creating a model where it can be leveraged yeah plugin we all know plugins are but right so so that someone else could take advantage of it exactly yeah a service mesh that's evolved yeah heard a lot of that what is that yeah it's um so developers this is actually the lift story is really interesting to me so at lyft developers were really uneasy about moving from the monolith to the micro-services architecture just because they didn't early understand the network component and we're like network reliability would not be so reliable would fail and time service meshes have allowed engineers at lyft to understand where their failures happen and in terms like of a network standpoint and so you're basically abstracting with network layer and allowing more transparency into it this is like very useful for when you have lots of Micra services and you want this kind of reliability and stability awesome so one point 9s coming Spence support Windows that's what key and now a congratulations just go to the next level I mean growth talk about the growth because it's fun for us to watch you know kind of a small group core young community less than three years old really to kubernetes kind of had some traction but it really is going to be commoditized and that's not a bad thing so how do you what's your take on this what's the vibe what's that what's the current feeling inside the community right now excited pinching ourselves no I think everybody's in awe everybody is in awe and we're just like we want to make this the best experience possible in terms of an open source experience you know we want to welcome people to the community we want to serve the people's needs and we just we just want to do a good job because this is really fun and I think the people working on these problems are having a lot of fun with with seeing this kind of growth and support it's been great certainly for US president creation president and creation of this whole movement it's been fun to watch a document final question what should people expect this week what is the show going to hopefully do what's your prediction what's your purpose here what should people expect this week and the folks that didn't make it what do they miss okay there are so many things happening it's insane you're going to get a little bit of everything there's lots of different tracks lots of diverse content I think I'm when I go to conferences in my personal experience I really love technical salons those are really great because you can get your hands dirty and you can get questions answered by the people who created the project that's an experience that is is really powerful for me I went to the first open tracing salon and that's where I kind of got my hands dirty with tracing and been siegelman who's doing the keynote today this afternoon was the person who was teaching me how to like do this stuff so yeah it was awesome like some marketing fluff no it's not and it's just like it's it's real experienced very expert like experts you know in the in the space teaching you these things so that that definitely can't be replicated I think the cig sessions will be really cool there's a big focus on not just learning stuff but also collaborating and and just talking about things before they get documented so that's a really good experience here it's an action-packed schedule I tweeted that it feels like I'm you know when Burning Man had like a hundred people announced this big thing I think this is the beginning of a amazing
