Nancy Wang & Kate Watts | International Women's Day
>> Hello everyone. Welcome to theCUBE's coverage of International Women's Day. I'm John Furrier, host of theCUBE been profiling the leaders in the technology world, women in technology from developers to the boardroom, everything in between. We have two great guests promoting in from Malaysia. Nancy Wang is the general manager, also CUBE alumni from AWS Data Protection, and founder and board chair of Advancing Women in Tech, awit.org. And of course Kate Watts who's the executive director of Advancing Women in Tech.org. So it's awit.org. Nancy, Kate, thanks for coming all the way across remotely from Malaysia. >> Of course, we're coming to you as fast as our internet bandwidth will allow us. And you know, I'm just thrilled today that you get to see a whole nother aspect of my life, right? Because typically we talk about AWS, and here we're talking about a topic near and dear to my heart. >> Well, Nancy, I love the fact that you're spending a lot of time taking the empowerment to go out and help the industries and helping with the advancement of women in tech. Kate, the executive director it's a 501C3, it's nonprofit, dedicating to accelerating the careers of women in groups in tech. Can you talk about the organization? >> Yes, I can. So Advancing Women in Tech was founded in 2017 in order to fix some of the pathway problems that we're seeing on the rise to leadership in the industry. And so we specifically focus on supporting mid-level women in technical roles, get into higher positions. We do that in a few different ways through mentorship programs through building technical skills and by connecting people to a supportive community. So you have your peer network and then a vertical sort of relationships to help you navigate the next steps in your career. So to date we've served about 40,000 individuals globally and we're just looking to expand our reach and impact and be able to better support women in the industry. >> Nancy, talk about the creation, the origination story. How'd this all come together? Obviously the momentum, everyone in the industry's been focused on this for a long time. Where did AWIT come from? Advancing Women in Technology, that's the acronym. Advancing Women in Technology.org, where'd it come from? What's the origination story? >> Yeah, so AWIT really originated from this desire that I had, to Kate's point around, well if you look around right and you know, don't take my word for it, right? Look at stats, look at news reports, or just frankly go on your LinkedIn and see how many women in underrepresented groups are in senior technical leadership roles right out in the companies whose names we all know. And so that was my case back in 2016. And so when I first got the idea and back then I was actually at Google, just another large tech company in the valley, right? It was about how do we get more role models, how we get more, for example, women into leadership roles so they can bring up the next generation, right? And so this is actually part of a longer speech that I'm about to give on Wednesday and part of the US State Department speaker program. In fact, that's why Kate and I are here in Malaysia right now is working with over 200 women entrepreneurs from all over in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia Philippines, Vietnam, Borneo, you know, so many countries where having more women entrepreneurs can help raise the GDP right, and that fits within our overall mission of getting more women into top leadership roles in tech. >> You know, I was talking about Teresa Carlson she came on the program as well for this year this next season we're going to do. And she mentioned the decision between the US progress and international. And she's saying as much as it's still bad numbers, it's worse than outside the United States and needs to get better. Can you comment on the global aspect? You brought that up. I think it's super important to highlight that it's just not one area, it's a global evolution. >> Absolutely, so let me start, and I'd love to actually have Kate talk about our current programs and all of the international groups that we're working with. So as Teresa aptly mentioned there is so much work to be done not just outside the US and North Americas where typically tech nonprofits will focus, but rather if you think about the one to end model, right? For example when I was doing the product market fit workshop for the US State Department I had women dialing in from rice fields, right? So let me just pause there for a moment. They were holding their cell phones up near towers near trees just so that they can get a few minutes of time with me to do a workshop and how to accelerate their business. So if you don't call that the desire to propel oneself or accelerate oneself, not sure what is, right. And so it's really that passion that drove me to spend the next week and a half here working with local entrepreneurs working with policy makers so we can take advantage and really leverage that passion that people have, right? To accelerate more business globally. And so that's why, you know Kate will be leading our contingent with the United Nations Women Group, right? That is focused on women's economic empowerment because that's super important, right? One aspect can be sure, getting more directors, you know vice presidents into companies like Google and Amazon. But another is also how do you encourage more women around the world to start businesses, right? To reach economic and freedom independence, right? To overcome some of the maybe social barriers to becoming a leader in their own country. >> Yes, and if I think about our own programs and our model of being very intentional about supporting the learning development and skills of women and members of underrepresented groups we focused very much on providing global access to a number of our programs. For instance, our product management certification on Coursera or engineering management our upcoming women founders accelerator. We provide both access that you can get from anywhere. And then also very intentional programming that connects people into the networks to be able to further their networks and what they've learned through the skills online, so. >> Yeah, and something Kate just told me recently is these courses that Kate's mentioning, right? She was instrumental in working with the American Council on Education and so that our learners can actually get up to six college credits for taking these courses on product management engineering management, on cloud product management. And most recently we had our first organic one of our very first organic testimonials was from a woman's tech bootcamp in Nigeria, right? So if you think about the worldwide impact of these upskilling courses where frankly in the US we might take for granted right around the world as I mentioned, there are women dialing in from rice patties from other, you know, for example, outside the, you know corporate buildings in order to access this content. >> Can you think about the idea of, oh sorry, go ahead. >> Go ahead, no, go ahead Kate. >> I was going to say, if you can't see it, you can't become it. And so we are very intentional about ensuring that we have we're spotlighting the expertise of women and we are broadcasting that everywhere so that anybody coming up can gain the skills and the networks to be able to succeed in this industry. >> We'll make sure we get those links so we can promote them. Obviously we feel the same way getting the word out. I think a couple things I'd like to ask you guys cause I think you hit a great point. One is the economic advantage the numbers prove that diverse teams perform better number one, that's clear. So good point there. But I want to get your thoughts on the entrepreneurial equation. You mentioned founders and startups and there's also different makeups in different countries. It's not like the big corporations sometimes it's smaller business in certain areas the different cultures have different business sizes and business types. How do you guys see that factoring in outside the United States, say the big tech companies? Okay, yeah. The easy lower the access to get in education than stay with them, in other countries is it the same or is it more diverse in terms of business? >> So what really actually got us started with the US State Department was around our work with women founders. And I love for Kate to actually share her experience working with AWS startups in that capacity. But frankly, you know, we looked at the content and the mentor programs that were providing women who wanted to be executives, you know, quickly realize a lot of those same skills such as finding customers, right? Scaling your product and building channels can also apply to women founders, not just executives. And so early supporters of our efforts from firms such as Moderna up in Seattle, Emergence Ventures, Decibel Ventures in, you know, the Bay Area and a few others that we're working with right now. Right, they believed in the mission and really helped us scale out what is now our existing platform and offerings for women founders. >> Those are great firms by the way. And they also are very founder friendly and also understand the global workforce. I mean, that's a whole nother dimension. Okay, what's your reaction to all that? >> Yes, we have been very intentional about taking the product expertise and the learnings of women and in our network, we first worked with AWS startups to support the development of the curriculum for the recent accelerator for women founders that was held last spring. And so we're able to support 25 founders and also brought in the expertise of about 20 or 30 women from Advancing Women in Tech to be able to be the lead instructors and mentors for that. And so we have really realized that with this network and this individual sort of focus on product expertise building strong teams, we can take that information and bring it to folks everywhere. And so there is very much the intentionality of allowing founders allowing individuals to take the lessons and bring it to their individual circumstances and the cultures in which they are operating. But the product sense is a skill that we can support the development of and we're proud to do so. >> That's awesome. Nancy, I want to ask you some never really talk about data storage and AWS cloud greatness and goodness, here's different and you also work full-time at AWS and you're the founder or the chairman of this great organization. How do you balance both and do you get, they're getting behind you on this, Amazon is getting behind you on this. >> Well, as I say it's always easier to negotiate on the way in. But jokes aside, I have to say the leadership has been tremendously supportive. If you think about, for example, my leaders Wayne Duso who's also been on the show multiple times, Bill Vaas who's also been on the show multiple times, you know they're both founders and also operators entrepreneurs at heart. So they understand that it is important, right? For all of us, it's really incumbent on all of us who are in positions to do so, to create a pathway for more people to be in leadership roles for more people to be successful entrepreneurs. So, no, I mean if you just looked at LinkedIn they're always uploading my vote so they reach to more audiences. And frankly they're rooting for us back home in the US while we're in Malaysia this week. >> That's awesome. And I think that's a good culture to have that empowerment and I think that's very healthy. What's next for you guys? What's on the agenda? Take us through the activities. I know that you got a ton of things happening. You got your event out there, which is why you're out there. There's a bunch of other activities. I think you guys call it the Advancing Women in Tech week. >> Yes, this week we are having a week of programming that you can check out at Advancing Women in Tech.org. That is spotlighting the expertise of a number of women in our space. So it is three days of programming Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday if you are in the US so the seventh through the ninth, but available globally. We are also going to be in New York next week for the event at the UN and are looking to continue to support our mentorship programs and also our work supporting women founders throughout the year. >> All right. I have to ask you guys if you don't mind get a little market data so you can share with us here at theCUBE. What are you hearing this year that's different in the conversation space around the topics, the interests? Obviously I've seen massive amounts of global acceleration around conversations, more video, things like this more stories are scaling, a lot more LinkedIn activity. It just seems like it's a lot different this year. Can you guys share any kind of current trends you're seeing relative to the conversations and topics being discussed across the the community? >> Well, I think from a needle moving perspective, right? I think due to the efforts of wonderful organizations including the Q for spotlighting all of these awesome women, right? Trailblazing women and the nonprofits the government entities that we work with there's definitely more emphasis on creating access and creating pathways. So that's probably one thing that you're seeing is more women, more investors posting about their activities. Number two, from a global trend perspective, right? The rise of women in security. I noticed that on your agenda today, you had Lena Smart who's a good friend of mine chief information security officer at MongoDB, right? She and I are actually quite involved in helping founders especially early stage founders in the security space. And so globally from a pure technical perspective, right? There's right more increasing regulations around data privacy, data sovereignty, right? For example, India's in a few weeks about to get their first data protection regulation there locally. So all of that is giving rise to yet another wave of opportunity and we want women founders uniquely positioned to take advantage of that opportunity. >> I love it. Kate, reaction to that? I mean founders, more pathways it sounds like a neural network, it sounds like AI enabled. >> Yes, and speaking of AI, with the rise of that we are also hearing from many community members the importance of continuing to build their skills upskill learn to be able to keep up with the latest trends. There's a lot of people wondering what does this mean for my own career? And so they're turning to organizations like Advancing Women in Tech to find communities to both learn the latest information, but also build their networks so that they are able to move forward regardless of what the industry does. >> I love the work you guys are doing. It's so impressive. I think the economic angle is new it's more amplified this year. It's always kind of been there and continues to be. What do you guys hope for by next year this time what do you hope to see different from a needle moving perspective, to use your word Nancy, for next year? What's the visual output in your mind? >> I want to see real effort made towards 50-50 representation in all tech leadership roles. And I'd like to see that happen by 2050. >> Kate, anything on your end? >> I love that. I'm going to go a little bit more touchy-feely. I want everybody in our space to understand that the skills that they build and that the networks they have carry with them regardless of wherever they go. And so to be able to really lean in and learn and continue to develop the career that you want to have. So whether that be at a large organization or within your own business, that you've got the potential to move forward on that within you. >> Nancy, Kate, thank you so much for your contribution. Harnessing the Power of Sound for Nature – Soundscape Ecological Research | Exascale Day 2020

We are celebrating Exascale Day. 10, 18, I think it's the second year of celebrating Exascale Day, and we're really excited to have our next guest and talk about kind of what this type of compute scale enables, and really look a little bit further down the road at some big issues, big problems and big opportunities that this is going to open up. And I'm really excited to get in this conversation with our next guest. He is Bryan Pijanowski the Professor of Landscape and Soundscape Ecology at Purdue University. Bryan, great to meet you. >> Great to be here. >> So, in getting ready for this conversation, I just watched your TED Talk, and I just loved one of the quotes. I actually got one of quote from it that's basically saying you are exploring the world through sound. I just would love to get a little deeper perspective on that, because that's such a unique way to think about things and you really dig into it and explain why this is such an important way to enjoy the world, to absorb the world and think about the world. >> Yeah, that's right Jeff. So the way I see it, sound is kind of like a universal variable. It exists all around us. And you can't even find a place on earth where there's no sound, where it's completely silent. Sound is a signal of something that's happening. And we can use that information in ways to allow us to understand the earth. Just thinking about all the different kinds of sounds that exist around us on a daily basis. I hear the birds, I hear the insects, but there's just a lot more than that. It's mammals and some cases, a lot of reptiles. And then when you begin thinking outside the biological system, you begin to hear rain, wind, thunder. And then there's the sounds that we make, sounds of traffic, the sounds of church bells. All of this is information, some of it's symbolic, some of it's telling me something about change. As an ecologist that's what I'm interested in, how is the earth changing? >> That's great and then you guys set up at Purdue, the Purdue Center for Global Soundscapes. Tell us a little bit about the mission and some of the work that you guys do. >> Well, our mission is really to use sound as a lens to study the earth, but to capture it in ways that are meaningful and to bring that back to the public to tell them a story about how the earth kind of exists. There's an incredible awe of nature that we all experience when we go out and listen into to the wild spaces of the earth. I've gone to the Eastern Steppes of Mongolian, I've climbed towers in the Paleotropics of Borneo and listened at night. And ask the question, how are these sounds different? And what is a grassland really supposed to sound like, without humans around? So we use that information and bring it back and analyze it as a means to understand how the earth is changing and really what the biological community is all about, and how things like climate change are altering our spaces, our wild spaces. I'm also interested in the role that people play and producing sound and also using sound. So getting back to Mongolia, we have a new NSF funded project where we're going to be studying herders and the ways in which they use sonic practices. They use a lot of sounds as information sources about how the environment is changing, but also how they relate back to place and to heritage a special sounds that resonate, the sounds of a river, for example, are the resonance patterns that they tune their throat to that pay homage to their parents that were born at the side of that river. There's these special connections that people have with place through sound. And so that's another thing that we're trying to do. In really simple terms, I want to go out and, what I call it sounds rather simple, record the earth-- >> Right. >> What does that mean? I want to go to every major biome and conduct a research study there. I want to know what does a grassland sound like? What is a coral reef sound like? A kelp forest and the oceans, a desert, and then capture that as baseline and use that information-- >> Yeah. >> For scientific purposes >> Now, there's so much to unpack there Bryan. First off is just kind of the foundational role that sound plays in our lives that you've outlined in great detail and you talked about it's the first sense that's really activated as we get consciousness, even before we're born right? We hear the sounds of our mother's heartbeat and her voice. And even the last sense that goes at the end a lot of times, in this really intimate relationship, as you just said, that the sounds represent in terms of our history. We don't have to look any further than a favorite song that can instantly transport you, almost like a time machine to a particular place in time. Very, very cool. Now, it's really interesting that what you're doing now is taking advantage of new technology and just kind of a new angle to capture sound in a way that we haven't done before. I think you said you have sound listening devices oftentimes in a single location for a year. You're not only capturing sound, the right sound is changes in air pressure, so that you're getting changes in air pressure, you're getting vibration, which is kind of a whole different level of data. And then to be able to collect that for a whole year and then start to try to figure out a baseline which is pretty simple to understand, but you're talking about this chorus. I love your phrase, a chorus, because that sound is made up of a bunch of individual inputs. And now trying to kind of go under the covers to figure out what is that baseline actually composed of. And you talk about a bunch of really interesting particular animals and species that combine to create this chorus that now you know is a baseline. How did you use to do that before? I think it's funny one of your research papers, you reach out to the great bird followers and bird listeners, 'cause as you said, that's the easiest way or the most prolific way for people to identify birds. So please help us in a crowdsource way try to identify all the pieces that make this beautiful chorus, that is the soundscape for a particular area. >> Right, yeah, that's right. It really does take a team of scientists and engineers and even folks in the social sciences and the humanities to really begin to put all of these pieces together. Experts in many fields are extremely valuable. They've got great ears because that's the tools that they use to go out and identify birds or insects or amphibians. What we don't have are generalists that go out and can tell you what everything sounds like. And I'll tell you that will probably never ever happen. That's just way too much, we have millions of species that exist on this planet. And we just don't have a specific catalog of what everything sounds like, it's just not possible or doable. So I need to go out and discover and bring those discoveries back that help us to understand nature and understand how the earth is changing. I can't wait for us to eventually develop that catalog. So we're trying to develop techniques and tools and approaches that allow us to develop this electronic catalog. Like you're saying this chorus, and it doesn't necessarily have to be a species specific chorus, it can be a chorus of all these different kind of sounds that we think relate back to this kind of animal or that kind of animal based upon the animals instrument-- >> Right, great. >> And this is the sound. >> Now again, you know, keep it to the exascale theme, right? You're collecting a lot of data and you mentioned in one of the pieces I've dug up, that your longest study in a single location is 17 years. You've got over 4 million recordings. And I think you said over 230 years if you wanted to listen to them all back to back. I mean, this is a huge, a big data problem in terms of the massive amount of data that you have and need to run through an analysis. >> Yeah, that's right. We're collecting 48,000 data points per second. So that's 48 kilohertz. And then so you multiply everything and then you have a sense of how many data points you actually have to put them all together. When you're listening to a sound file over 10 minutes, you have hundreds of sounds that exist in them. Oftentimes you just don't know what they are, but you can more or less put some kind of measure on all of them and then begin to summarize them over space and time and try to understand it from a perspective of really science. >> Right, right. And then I just love to get your take as you progress down this kind of identification road, we're all very familiar with copyright infringement hits on YouTube or social media or whatever, when it picks up on some sound and the technology is actually really sophisticated to pick up some of those sound signatures. But to your point, it's a lot easier to compare against the known and to search for that known. Then when you've got this kind of undefined chorus that said we do know that there can be great analysis done that we've seen AI and ML applied, especially in the surveillance side on the video-- >> Right. >> With video that it can actually do a lot of computation and a lot of extracting signal from the noise, if you will. As you look down the road on the compute side for the algorithms that you guys are trying to build with the human input of people that know what you're listening to, what kind of opportunities do you see and where are we on that journey where you can get more leverage out of some of these technology tools? >> Well, I think what we're doing right now is developing the methodological needs, kind of describe what it is we need to move into that new space, which is going to require these computational, that computational infrastructure. So, for example, we have a study right now where we're trying to identify certain kinds of mosquitoes (chuckling) a vector-borne mosquitoes, and our estimates is that we need about maybe 900 to 1200 specific recordings per species to be able to put it into something like a convolutional neural network to be able to extract out the information, and look at the patterns and data, to be able to say indeed this is the species that we're interested in. So what we're going to need and in the future here is really a lot of information that allow us to kind of train these neural networks and help us identify what's in the sound files. As you can imagine the computational infrastructure needed to do that for data storage and CPU, GPU is going to be truly amazing. >> Right, right. So I want to get your take on another topic. And again the basis of your research is really all bound around the biodiversity crisis right? That's from the kind of-- >> Yeah. >> The thing that's started it and now you're using sound as a way to measure baseline and talk about loss of species, reduced abundancies and rampant expansion of invasive species as part of your report. But I'd love to get your take on cities. And how do you think cities fit the future? Clearly, it's an efficient way to get a lot of people together. There's a huge migration of people-- >> Right. >> To cities, but one of your themes in your Ted Talk is reconnecting with nature-- >> Yeah. >> Because we're in cities, but there's this paradox right? Because you don't want people living in nature can be a little bit disruptive. So is it better to kind of get them all in a tip of a peninsula in San Francisco or-- >> Yeah. >> But then do they lose that connection that's so important. >> Yeah. >> I just love to get your take on cities and the impacts that they're have on your core research. >> Yeah, I mean, it truly is a paradox as you just described it. We're living in a concrete jungle surrounded by not a lot of nature, really, honestly, occasional bird species that tend to be fairly limited, selected for limited environments. So many people just don't get out into the wild. But visiting national parks certainly is one of those kinds of experience that people oftentimes have. But I'll just say that it's getting out there and truly listening and feeling this emotional feeling, psychological feeling that wraps around you, it's a solitude. It's just you and nature and there's just no one around. >> Right. >> And that's when it really truly sinks in, that you're a part of this place, this marvelous place called earth. And so there are very few people that have had that experience. And so as I've gone to some of these places, I say to myself I need to bring this back. I need to tell the story, tell the story of the awe of nature, because it truly is an amazing place. Even if you just close your eyes and listen. >> Right, right. >> And it, the dawn chorus in the morning in every place tells me so much about that place. It tells me about all the animals that exist there. The nighttime tells me so much too. As a scientist that's spent most of his career kind of going out and working during the day, there's so much happening at night. Matter of fact-- >> Right. >> There's more sounds at night than there were during the day. So there is a need for us to experience nature and we don't do that. And we're not aware of these crises that are happening all over the planet. I do go to places and I listen, and I can tell you I'm listening for things that I think should be there. You can listen and you can hear the gaps, the gaps and that in that chorus, and you think what should be there-- >> Right. >> And then why isn't it there? And that's where I really want to be able to dig deep into my sound files and start to explore that more fully. >> It's great, it's great, I mean, I just love the whole concept of, and you identified it in the moment you're in the tent, the thunderstorm came by, it's really just kind of changing your lens. It's really twisting your lens, changing your focus, because that sound is there, right? It's been there all along, it's just, do you tune it in or do you tune it out? Do you pay attention? Do not pay attention is an active process or a passive process and like-- >> Right. >> I love that perspective. And I want to shift gears a little bit, 'cause another big environmental thing, and you mentioned it quite frequently is feeding the world's growing population and feeding it-- >> Yeah. >> In an efficient way. And anytime you see kind of factory farming applied to a lot of things you wonder is it sustainable, and then all the issues that come from kind of single output production whether that's pigs or coffee or whatever and the susceptibility to disease and this and that. So I wonder if you could share your thoughts on, based on your research, what needs to change to successfully and without too much destruction feed this ever increasing population? >> Yeah, I mean, that's one of the grand challenges. I mean, society is facing so many at the moment. In the next 20 years or so, 30 years, we're going to add another 2 billion people to the planet, and how do we feed all of them? How do we feed them well and equitably across the globe? I don't know how to do that. But I'll tell you that our crops and the ecosystem that supports the food production needs the animals and the trees and the microbes for the ecosystem to function. We have many of our crops that are pollinated by birds and insects and other animals, seeds need to be dispersed. And so we need the rest of life to exist and thrive for us to thrive too. It's not an either, it's not them or us, it has to be all of us together on this planet working together. We have to find solutions. And again, it's me going out to some of these places and bringing it back and saying, you have to listen, you have to listen to these places-- >> Right. >> They're truly a marvelous. >> So I know most of your listening devices are in remote areas and not necessarily in urban areas, but I'm curious, do you have any in urban areas? And if so, how has that signature changed since COVID? I just got to ask, (Bryan chuckling) because we went to this-- >> Yeah. >> Light switch moment in the middle of March, human activity slowed down-- >> Yeah. >> In a way that no one could have forecast ever on a single event, globally which is just fascinating. And you think of the amount of airplanes that were not flying and trains that we're not moving and people not moving. Did you have any any data or have you been able to collect data or see data as the impact of that? Not only directly in wherever the sensors are, but a kind of a second order impact because of the lack of pollution and the other kind of human activity that just went down. I mean, certainly a lot of memes (Bryan chuckling) on social media of all the animals-- >> Yeah. >> Come back into the city. But I'm just curious if you have any data in the observation? >> Yeah, we're part of actually a global study, there's couple of hundred of us that are contributing our data to what we call the Silent Cities project. It's being coordinated out of Europe right now. So we placed our sensors out in different areas, actually around West Lafayette area here in Indiana, near road crossings and that sort of thing to be able to kind of capture that information. We have had in this area here now, the 17 year study. So we do have studies that get into areas that tend to be fairly urban. So we do have a lot of information. I tell you, I don't need my sensors to tell me something that I already know and you suspect is true. Our cities were quiet, much quieter during the COVID situation. And it's continued to kind of get a little bit louder, as we've kind of released some of the policies that put us into our homes. And so yes, there is a major change. Now there have been a couple of studies that just come out that are pretty interesting. One, which was in San Francisco looking at the white-crowned sparrow. And they looked at historical data that went back something like 20 years. And they found that the birds in the cities were singing a much softer, 30% softer. >> Really? >> And they, yeah, and they would lower their frequencies. So the way sound works is that if you lower your frequencies that sound can travel farther. And so the males can now hear themselves twice as far just due to the fact that our cities are quieter. So it does have an impact on animals, truly it does. There was some studies back in 2001, during the September, the 9/11 crisis as well, where people are going out and kind of looking at data, acoustic data, and discovering that things were much quieter. I'd be very interested to look at some of the data we have in our oceans, to what extent are oceans quieter. Our oceans sadly are the loudest part of this planet. It's really noisy, sound travels, five times farther. Generally the noise is lower frequencies, and we have lots of ships that are all over the planet and in our oceans. So I'd really be interested in those kinds of studies as well, to what extent is it impacting and helping our friends in the oceans. >> Right, right, well, I was just going to ask you that question because I think a lot of people clearly understand sound in the air that surrounds us, but you talk a lot about sound in ocean, and sound as an indicator of ocean health, and again, this concept of a chorus. And I think everybody's probably familiar with the sounds of the humpback whale right? He got very popular and we've all seen and heard that. But you're doing a lot of research, as you said, in oceans and in water. And I wonder if you can, again, kind of provide a little bit more color around that, because I don't think you people, maybe we're just not that tuned into it, think of the ocean or water as a rich sound environment especially to the degree as you're talking about where you can actually start to really understand what's going on. >> Yeah, I mean, some of us think that sound in the oceans is probably more important to animals than on land, on the terrestrial side. Sound helps animals to navigate through complex waterways and find food resources. You can only use site so far underwater especially when it gets to be kind of dark, once you get down to certain levels. So there many of us think that sound is probably going to be an important component to measuring the status of health in our oceans. >> It's great. Well, Bryan, I really enjoyed this conversation. I've really enjoyed your Ted Talk, and now I've got a bunch of research papers I want to dig into a little bit more as well. >> Okay.(chuckling) >> It's a fascinating topic, but I think the most important thing that you talked about extensively in your Ted Talk is really just taking a minute to take a step back from the individual perspective, appreciate what's around us, hear, that information and I think there's a real direct correlation to the power of exascale, to the power of hearing this data, processing this data, and putting intelligence on that data, understanding that data in a good way, in a positive way, in a delightful way, spiritual way, even that we couldn't do before, or we just weren't paying attention like with what you know is on your phone please-- >> Yeah, really. >> It's all around you. It's been there a whole time. >> Yeah. (both chuckling) >> Yeah, Jeff, I really encourage your viewers to count it, just go out and listen. As we say, go out and listen and join the mission. >> I love it, and you can get started by going to the Center for Global Soundscapes and you have a beautiful landscape. We air live at Stanford University for the fourth annual Women in Data Science Conference. The Cube has had the pleasure of being here all four years on I'm welcoming Back to the Cube, one of our distinguished alumni Janet George, the fellow chief data officer, scientists, big data and cognitive computing at Western Digital. Janet, it's great to see you. Thank you. Thank you so much. So I mentioned yes. Fourth, Annie will women in data science. And it's been, I think I met you here a couple of years ago, and we look at the impact. It had a chance to speak with Margo Garrett's in a about an hour ago, one of the co founders of Woods saying, We're expecting twenty thousand people to be engaging today with the Livestream. There are wigs events in one hundred and fifty locations this year, fifty plus countries expecting about one hundred thousand people to engage the attention. The focus that they have on data science and the opportunities that it has is really palpable. Tell us a little bit about Western Digital's continued sponsorship and what makes this important to you? >> So Western distal has recently transformed itself as a company, and we are a data driven company, so we are very much data infrastructure company, and I think that this momentum off A is phenomenal. It's just it's a foundational shift in the way we do business, and this foundational shift is just gaining tremendous momentum. Businesses are realizing that they're going to be in two categories the have and have not. And in order to be in the half category, you have started to embrace a You've got to start to embrace data. You've got to start to embrace scale and you've got to be in the transformation process. You have to transform yourself to put yourself in a competitive position. And that's why Vest Initial is here, where the leaders in storage worldwide and we'd like to be at the heart of their data is. >> So how has Western Digital transform? Because if we look at the evolution of a I and I know you're give you're on a panel tan, you're also giving a breakout on deep learning. But some of the importance it's not just the technical expertise. There's other really important skills. Communication, collaboration, empathy. How has Western digital transformed to really, I guess, maybe transform the human capital to be able to really become broad enough to be ableto tow harness. Aye, aye, for good. >> So we're not just a company that focuses on business for a We're doing a number of initiatives One of the initiatives were doing is a I for good, and we're doing data for good. This is related to working with the U. N. We've been focusing on trying to figure out how climate change the data that impacts climate change, collecting data and providing infrastructure to store massive amounts of species data in the environment that we've never actually collected before. So climate change is a huge area for us. Education is a huge area for us. Diversity is a huge area for us. We're using all of these areas as launching pad for data for good and trying to use data to better mankind and use a eye to better mankind. >> One of the things that is going on at this year's with second annual data fun. And when you talk about data for good, I think this year's Predictive Analytics Challenge was to look at satellite imagery to train the model to evaluate which images air likely tohave oil palm plantations. And we know that there's a tremendous social impact that palm oil and oil palm plantations in that can can impact, such as I think in Borneo and eighty percent reduction in the Oregon ten population. So it's interesting that they're also taking this opportunity to look at data for good. And how can they look at predictive Analytics to understand how to reduce deforestation like you talked about climate and the impact in the potential that a I and data for good have is astronomical? >> That's right. We could not build predictive models. We didn't have the data to put predictive boats predictive models. Now we have the data to put put out massively predictive models that can help us understand what change would look like twenty five years from now and then take corrective action. So we know carbon emissions are causing very significant damage to our environment. And there's something we can do about it. Data is helping us do that. We have the infrastructure, economies of scale. We can build massive platforms that can store this data, and then we can. Alan, it's the state at scale. We have enough technology now to adapt to our ecosystem, to look at disappearing grillers, you know, to look at disappearing insects, to look at just equal system that be living, how, how the ecosystem is going to survive and be better in the next ten years. There's a >> tremendous amount of power that data for good has, when often times whether the Cube is that technology conferences or events like this. The word trust issues yes, a lot in some pretty significant ways. And we often hear that data is not just the life blood of an organization, whether it's in just industry or academia. To have that trust is essential without it. That's right. No, go. >> That's right. So the data we have to be able to be discriminated. That's where the trust comes into factor, right? Because you can create a very good eh? I'm odder, or you can create a bad air more so a lot depends on who is creating the modern. The authorship of the model the creator of the modern is pretty significant to what the model actually does. Now we're getting a lot of this new area ofthe eyes coming in, which is the adversarial neural networks. And these areas are really just springing up because it can be creators to stop and block bad that's being done in the world next. So, for example, if you have malicious attacks on your website or hear militias, data collection on that data is being used against you. These adversarial networks and had built the trust in the data and in the so that is a whole new effort that has started in the latest world, which is >> critical because you mentioned everybody. I think, regardless of what generation you're in that's on. The planet today is aware of cybersecurity issues, whether it's H vac systems with DDOS attacks or it's ah baby boomer, who was part of the fifty million Facebook users whose data was used without their knowledge. It's becoming, I won't say accepted, but very much commonplace, Yes, so training the A I to be used for good is one thing. But I'm curious in terms of the potential that individuals have. What are your thoughts on some of these practices or concepts that we're hearing about data scientists taking something like a Hippocratic oath to start owning accountability for the data that they're working with. I'm just curious. What's >> more, I have a strong opinion on this because I think that data scientists are hugely responsible for what they are creating. We need a diversity of data scientists to have multiple models that are completely divorce, and we have to be very responsible when we start to create. Creators are by default, have to be responsible for their creation. Now where we get into tricky areas off, then you are the human auto or the creator ofthe Anay I model. And now the marshal has self created because it a self learned who owns the patent, who owns the copyright to those when I becomes the creator and whether it's malicious or non malicious right. And that's also ownership for the data scientist. So the group of people that are responsible for creating the environment, creating the morals the question comes into how do we protect the authors, the uses, the producers and the new creators off the original piece of art? Because at the end of the day, when you think about algorithms and I, it's just art its creation and you can use the creation for good or bad. And as the creation recreates itself like a learning on its own with massive amounts of data after an original data scientist has created the model well, how we how to be a confident. So that's a very interesting area that we haven't even touched upon because now the laws have to change. Policies have to change, but we can't stop innovation. Innovation has to go, and at the same time we have to be responsible about what we innovate >> and where do you think we are? Is a society in terms of catching As you mentioned, we can't. We have to continue innovation. Where are we A society and society and starting to understand the different principles of practices that have to be implemented in order for proper management of data, too. Enable innovation to continue at the pace that it needs. >> June. I would say that UK and other countries that kind of better than us, US is still catching up. But we're having great conversations. This is very important, right? We're debating the issues. We're coming together as a community. We're having so many discussions with experts. I'm sitting in so many panels contributing as an Aye aye expert in what we're creating. What? We see its scale when we deploy an aye aye, modern in production. What have we seen as the longevity of that? A marker in a business setting in a non business setting. How does the I perform and were now able to see sustained performance of the model? So let's say you deploy and am are in production. You're able inform yourself watching the sustained performance of that a model and how it is behaving, how it is learning how it's growing, what is its track record. And this knowledge is to come back and be part of discussions and part of being informed so we can change the regulations and be prepared for where this is going. Otherwise will be surprised. And I think that we have started a lot of discussions. The community's air coming together. The experts are coming together. So this is very good news. >> Theologian is's there? The moment of Edward is building. These conversations are happening. >> Yes, and policy makers are actively participating. This is very good for us because we don't want innovators to innovate without the participation of policymakers. We want the policymakers hand in hand with the innovators to lead the charter. So we have the checks and balances in place, and we feel safe because safety is so important. We need psychological safety for anything we do even to have a conversation. We need psychological safety. So imagine having a >> I >> systems run our lives without having that psychological safety. That's bad news for all of us, right? And so we really need to focus on the trust. And we need to focus on our ability to trust the data or a right to help us trust the data or surface the issues that are causing the trust. >> Janet, what a pleasure to have you back on the Cube.
