[Music] hello everyone welcome back to the live coverage here in monaco for the monaco crypto summit i'm john furrier host of thecube uh we have a great great guest lineup here already in nine decentralization web 3 the metaverse we've got a a powerhouse influencer on the qb ryan gills the founder of openmeta been in the issue for a while ryan great to see you thanks for coming on great to be here thank you you know one of the things that we were observing earlier conversations is you have young and old coming together the best and brightest right now in the front line it's been there for a couple years you know get some hype cycles going on but that's normal in these early growth markets but still true north star is in play that is democratize remove the intermediaries create immutable power to the people the same kind of theme has been drum beating on now come the metaverse wave which is the nfts now the meta verses you know at the beginning of this next wave yeah this is where we're at right now what are you working on tell us what's what's open meta working on yeah i mean so there is a reason for all of this right i think we go through all these different cycles and there's an economic incentive engine and it's designed in because people really like making money but there's a deeper reason for it all and the words the buzzwords the terms they change based off of different cycles this one is a metaverse i just saw it a little early you know so i recognized the importance of an open metaverse probably in 2017 and really decided to dedicate 10 years to that um so we're very early into that decade and we're starting to see more of a movement building and uh you know i've catalyzed a lot of that from from the beginning and making sure that while everything moves to a closed corporate side of things there's also an equal bottom-up approach which i think is just more important and more interesting well first of all i want to give you a lot of props for seeing it early and recognizing the impact and potential collateral damage of not not having open and i was joking earlier about the facebook little snafu with the the exercise app and ftc getting involved and you know i kind of common new york times guy comment online like hey i remember aol wanted to monopolize dial up internet and look the open web obviously changed all that they went to sign an extinction not the same comparable here but you know everyone wants to have their own little walled guard and they feel comfortable first-party data the data business so balancing the benefit of data and all the ip that could come into whether it's a visualization or platform it has to be open without open then you're going to have fragmentation you're going to have all kinds of perverse incentives how does the metaverse continue with such big players like meta themselves x that new name for facebook you know big bully tons of cash you know looking to you know get their sins forgiven um so to speak i mean you got google probably will come in apple's right around the corner amazon you get the whales out there how do is it proprietary is walled garden the new proprietary how do you view all that because it's it's still early and so there's a lot of change can happen well it's an interesting story that's really playing out in three acts right we had the first act which was really truly open right there was this idea that the internet is for the end user this is all just networking and then web 2 came and we got a lot of really great business models from it and it got closed up you know and now as we enter this sort of third act we have the opportunity to learn from both of those right and so i think web 3 needs to go back to the values of web one with the lessons in hindsight of web 2. and all of the winners from web 2 are clearly going to want to keep winning in web 3. so you can probably guess every single company and corporation on earth will move into this i think most governments will move into it as well and um but they're not the ones that are leading it the ones that are leading it are are just it's a culture of people it's a movement that's building and accumulating over time you know it's weird it's uh the whole web 2 thing is the history is interesting because you know when i started my podcasting company in 2004 there's only like three of us you know the dave weiner me evan williams and jack dorsey and we thought and the blogging just was getting going and the dream was democratization at the time mainstream media was the enemy and then now blogs are media so and then all sudden it like maybe it was the 2008 area with the that recession it stopped and then like facebook came in obviously twitter was formed from the death of odio podcasting company so the moment in time in history was a glimmic glimmer of hope well we went under my company went under we all went under but then that ended and then you had the era of twitter facebook linkedin reddit was still around so it kind of stopped where did it where did it pick up was it the ethereum bitcoin and ethereum brought that back where'd the open come back well it's a generational thing if you if you go back to like you know apple as a startup they were trying to take down ibm right it was always there's always the bigger thing that was that we we're trying to sort of unbundle or unpackage because they have too much power they have too much influence and now you know facebook and apple and these big tech companies they are that on on the planet and they're doing it bigger than it's ever been done but when they were startups they existed to try to take that from a bigger company so i think you know it's not an it's not a fact that like facebook or zuckerberg is is the villain here it's just the fact that we're reaching peak centralization anything past this point it becomes more and more unhealthy right and an open metaverse is just a way to build a solution instead of more of a problem and i think if we do just allow corporations to build and own them on the metaverse these problems will get bigger and larger more significant they will touch more people on earth and we know what that looks like so why not try something different so what's the playbook what's the current architecture of the open meta verse that you see and how do people get involved is there protocols to be developed is there new things that are needed how does the architecture layout take us through that your mindset vision on that and then how can people get involved yeah so the the entity structure of what i do is a company called crucible out of the uk um but i i found out very quickly that just a purely for-profit closed company a commercial company won't achieve this objective there's limitations to that so i run a dao as well out of switzerland it's called open meta we actually we named it this six months before facebook changed their name and so this is just the track we're on right and what we develop is a protocol uh we believe that the internet built by game developers is how you define the metaverse and that protocol is in the dao it is in the dow it's that's crucial crucible protocol open meta okay you can think of crucible as labs okay no we're building we're building everything so incubator kind of r d kind of thing exactly yeah and i'm making the choice to develop things and open them up create public goods out of them harness things that are more of a bottom-up approach you know and what we're developing is the emergence protocol which is basically defining the interface between the wallets and the game engines right so you have unity and unreal which all the game developers are sort of building with and we have built software that drops into those game engines to map ownership between the wallet and the experience in the game so integration layer basically between the wallet kind of how stripe is viewed from a software developer's campaign exactly but done on open rails and being done for a skill set of world building that is coming and game developers are the best suited for this world building and i like to own what i built yeah i don't like other people to own what i build and i think there's an entire generation that's that's really how do you feel about the owning and sharing component is that where you see the scale coming into play here i can own it and scale it through the relationship of the open rails yeah i mean i think the truth is that the open metaverse will be a smaller network than even one corporate virtual world for a while because these companies have billions of people right yeah every room you've ever been in on earth people are using two or three of facebook's products right they just have that adoption but they don't have trust they don't have passion they don't have the movement that you see in web3 they don't have the talent the level of creative talent those people care about owning what they create on the on what can someone get involved with question is that developer is that a sponsor what do people do to get involved with do you and your team and to make it bigger i mean it shouldn't be too small so if this tracks you can assume it gets bigger if you care about an open metaverse you have a seat at the table if you become a member of the dao you have a voice at the table you can make decisions with us we are building developing technology that can be used openly so if you're a game developer and you use unity or unreal we will open the beta this month later and then we move directly into what's called a game jam so a global hackathon for game developers where we just go through a giant exploration of what is possible i mean you think about gaming i always said the early adopters of all technology and the old web one was porn and that was because they were they were agnostic of vendor pitches or whatever is it made money they've worked we don't tell them we've always been first we don't tolerate vaporware gaming is now the new area where it is so the audience doesn't want vapor they want it to work they want technology to be solid they want community so it's now the new arbiter so gaming is the pretext to metaverse clearly gaming is swallowing all of media and probably most of the world and this game mechanics under the hood and all kinds of underlying stuff now how does that shape the developer community so like take the classic software developer may not be a game developer how do they translate over you seeing crossover from the software developers that are out there to be game developers what's your take on that it's an interesting question because i come to a lot of these events and the entire web 3 movement is web developers it's in the name yeah right and we have a whole wave of exploration and nfts being sold of people who really love games they're they're players they're gamers and they're fans of games but they are not in the skill set of game development this is a whole discipline yeah it's a whole expertise right you have to understand ik retargeting rigging bone meshes and mapping of all of that stuff and environment building and rendering and all these things it's it's a stacked skill set and we haven't gone through any exploration yet with them that is the next cycle that we're going to and that's what i've spent the last three or four years preparing for yeah and getting the low code is going to be good i was saying earlier to the young gun we had on his name was um oscar belly he's argo versus he's 25 years old he's like he made a quote i'm too old to get into esports like 22 old 25 come on i'd love to be in esports i was commenting that there could be someone sitting next to us in the metaverse here on tv on our digital tv program in the future that's going to be possible the first party citizenship between physical experience absolutely and meta versus these cameras all are a layer in which you can blend the two yeah so that that's that's going to be coming sooner and it's really more of the innovation around these engines to make it look real and have someone actually moving their body not like a stick figure yes or a lego block this is where most people have overlooked because what you have is you have two worlds you have web 3 web developers who see this opportunity and are really going for it and then you have game developers who are resistant to it for the most part they have not acclimated to this but the game developers are more of the keys to it because they understand how to build worlds yeah they do they understand how to build they know what success looks like they know what success looks like if you if you talk about the metaverse with anyone the most you'll hear is ready player one yeah maybe snow crash but those things feel like games yeah right so the metaverse and gaming are so why are game developers um like holding back is because they're like ah it's too not ready yet i'm two more elite or is it more this is you know this is an episode on its own yeah um i'm actually a part of a documentary if you go to youtube and you say why gamers hate nfts there's a two-part documentary about an hour long that robin schmidt from the defiant did and it's really a very good deep dive into this but i think we're just in a moment in time right now if you remember henry ford when he he produced the car everybody wanted faster horses yeah they didn't understand the cultural shift that was happening they just wanted an incremental improvement right and you can't say that right now because it sounds arrogant but i do believe that this is a moment in time and i think once we get through this cultural shift it will be much more clear why it's important it's not pure speculation yeah it's not clout it's not purely money there's something happening that's important for humanity yeah and if we don't do it openly it will be more of a problem yeah i totally agree with you on that silent impact is number one and people some people just don't see it because it's around the corner visionaries do like yourselves we do my objective over the next say three to six months is to identify which game developers see the value in web 3 and are leaning into it because we've built technology that solves interoperability between engines mapping ownership from wallets all the sort of blueprints that are needed in order for a game developer to build this way we've developed that we just need to identify where are they right because the loudest voices are the ones that are pushing back against this yeah and if you're not on twitter you don't see how many people really see this opportunity and i talked to epic and unity and nvidia and they all agree that this is where the future is going but the one question mark is who wants it where are they you know it's interesting i talked to lauren besel earlier she's from the music background we were talking about open source and how music i found that is not open it's proprietary i was talking about when i was in college i used to deal software you'd be like what do you mean deal well at t source code was proprietary and that started the linux movement in the 80s that became a systems revolution and then open source then just started to accelerate now people like it's free software is like not a big deal everyone knows it's what it was never proprietary but we were fighting the big proprietary code bases you mentioned that earlier is there a proprietary thing for music well not really because it's licensed rights right so in the metaverse who's the proprietary is it the walled garden is the is it is it the gamers so is it the consoles is it the investment that these gaming companies have in the software itself so i find that that open source vibe is very much circulating around your world actually open maps in the word open but open source software has a trajectory you know foundations contributors community building same kind of mindset music not so much because no one's it's not direct comparable but i think here it's interesting the gaming culture could be that that proprietary ibm the the state the playstation the xbox you know if you dive into the modding community right the modding community has sort of been this like gray area of of gaming and they will modify games that already exist but they do it with the values of open source they do it with composability and there's been a few breakthroughs counter-strike is a mod right some of the largest games of all time came from mods of other games look at quake had a comeback i played first multiplayer doom when it came out in the 90s and that was all mod based exactly yeah quake and quake was better but you know i remember the first time on a 1.5 cable mode and playing with my friends remember vividly now the graphics weren't that good but that was mod it's mod so then you go i mean and then you go into these other subcultures like dungeons and dragons which was considered to be such a nerdy thing but it's just a deeply human thing it's a narrative building collective experience like these are all the bottom-up type approaches modding uh world building so you're going to connect so i'm just kind of thinking out loud here you're going to connect the open concept of source with open meta bring game developers and software drills together create a fabric of a baseline somewhat somewhat collected platform tooling and components and let it just sell form see what happens better self form that's your imposing composability is much faster yeah than a closed system and you got what are your current building blocks you have now you have the wallet and you have so we built an sdk on both unity and unreal okay as a part of a system that is a protocol that plugs into those two engines and we have an inventory service we have an avatar system we basically kind of leaned into this idea of a persona being the next step after a pfp so so folks that are out there girls and boys who are sitting there playing games they could build their own game on this thing absolutely this is the opportunity for them entrepreneurs to circumvent the system and go directly with open meta and build their own open environment like i said before i i like to own the things i built i've had that entrepreneurial lesson but i don't think in the future you should be so okay with other companies or other intermediaries owning you and what you build i think i mean opportunity to build value yeah and i think i think your point the mod culture is not so much going to be the answer it's what that was like the the the the dynamic of modding yes is developing yes and then therefore you get the benefit of sovereign identity yeah you get the benefit of unbanking that's not the way we market this but those are benefits that come along with it and it allows you to live a different life and may the better product win yeah i mean that's what you're enabling yeah ryan thanks so much for coming on real final question what's going on here why are we Breaking Analysis: Your Online Assets Aren’t Safe - Is Cloud the Problem or the Solution?


 

from the cube studios in palo alto in boston bringing you data-driven insights from the cube and etr this is breaking analysis with dave vellante the convenience of online access to bank accounts payment apps crypto exchanges and other transaction systems has created enormous risks which the vast majority of individuals either choose to ignore or simply don't understand the internet has become the new private network and unfortunately it's not so private apis scripts spoofing insider crime sloppy security hygiene by users and much more all increase our risks the convenience of cloud-based services in many respects exacerbates the problem but software built in the cloud is a big part of the solution hello everyone and welcome to this week's wikibon cube insights powered by etr in this breaking analysis we'll try to raise awareness about a growing threat to your liquid assets and hopefully inspire you to do some research and take actions to lower the probability of you losing thousands hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars let's go back to 2019 in an event that should have forced us to act but for most of us didn't in september of that year jack dorsey's twitter twitter account was hacked the hackers took over his account and posted racial slurs and other bizarre comments before twitter could regain control of the account and assure us that this wasn't a system-wide attack most concerning however was the manner in which the attackers got a hold of dorsey's twitter account they used an increasingly common and relatively easy to execute technique referred to as a sim hijack or a sim swap the approach allows cyber thieves to take control of a victim's phone number now they often will target high-profile individuals like ceos and celebrities to embarrass or harass them but increasingly they're going after people's money of course now just in the past month we've seen a spate of attacks where individuals have lost cash it's a serious problem of increasing frequency so let's talk a little bit about how it works now some of you are familiar with this technique but most people that we talk to either aren't aware of it or aren't concerned you should be in a sim hack like this one documented on medium in may of 2019 four months prior to the dorsey attack the hackers who have many of your credentials that have likely been posted on the dark web they have your email they have your frequently used passwords your phone number your address your mother's maiden name name of your favorite pet and so forth they go in and they spoof a mobile phone carrier rep into thinking that it's you and they convince the agent that they've switched phones or have some other ruse to get a new sim card sent to them or they pay insiders at the phone carrier to steal sim card details hey 100 bucks a card big money now once in possession of the sim card info the attacker now can receive sms messages as part of two-factor authentication systems that are often used to verify identity they can't use face id on mobile but what they can do is go into your web account and change the password or other information the website then sends an sms and now the attacker has the code and is in then the individual can lock you out and steal your money before you even know what hit you all right so what can you do about it first there's no system that is hack proof if the bad guys want to get you and the value is high enough they will get you but that's the key roi what's roi simply put it's a measure of return derived from dividing the value stolen by the cost of getting that value it's benefit divided by cost so a good way to dissuade a criminal is to increase the denominator if you make it harder to steal the value goes down the roi is less here's a layered system shared by jason floyer the son of our very own david floyer smart dna there so we appreciate his contribution to the cube the system involves three layers of protection first you got to think about all the high value online systems that you have here are just a few you got bank accounts you have investment accounts you might have betting sites that has cash in it e-commerce sites and so forth now many of these sites if not most will use sms-based two-factor authentication to identify you now that exposes you to the sim hack the system that jason proposes let's start in the middle of this chart the first thing is you got to acknowledge that the logins that you're using to access your critical systems are already public so the first thing you do is to get a in quotes secure email in other words one that no one knows about and isn't on the dark web find a provider that you trust maybe the one maybe one that doesn't sell ads but that look that's your call or maybe go out and buy a domain and create a private email address now the second step is to use a password manager now for those who don't know what that is you're probably already using one that comes with your chrome browser for example and it remembers your passwords and autofills them now if you on your iphone if you're an iphone user go to settings passwords and security recommendations or if you're on an android phone open your chrome app and go to settings passwords check passwords you're likely to see a number of recommendations as in dozens or maybe even hundreds that have been compromised reuse passwords and or or are the subject of a data breach so a password manager is a single cloud-based layer that works on your laptop and your mobile phone and allows you to largely automate the creation management and maintenance of your online credentials now the third layer here involves an external cloud-based or sometimes app-based two-factor authentication system that doesn't use sms one that essentially turns your phone into a hardware authentication device much like an external device that you would use like a yubikey now that's also a really good idea to use as that third layer that hardware fob so the system basically brings together all your passwords under one roof under one system with some layers that lower the probability of your money getting stolen again it doesn't go to zero percent but it's dramatically better than the protection that most people have here's another view of that system and this venn the password manager in the middle manages everything and yes there's a concern that all your passwords are in one place but once set up it's more secure than what you're likely doing today we'll explain that and it'll make your life a lot easier the key to this system is there's there's a single password that you have to remember for the password manager and it takes care of everything else now for many password managers you can also add a non-sms based third-party two-factor authentication capability we'll come back and talk about that in a moment so the mobile phone here uses facial recognition if it's enabled so it would require somebody they had either have you at gunpoint to use your phone and to stick it in front of your face to get into your accounts or you know eventually they'll become experts at deep fakes that's probably something we're going to have to contend with down the road so it's the desktop or laptop via web access that is of the greatest concern in this use case this is where the non-sms-based third-party two-factor authentication comes into play it's installed on your phone and if somebody comes into your account from an unauthorized device it forces a two-factor authentication not using sms but using a third-party app as you guessed it is running in the cloud this is where the cloud creates this problem but it's also here to help solve this problem but the key is this app it generates a verification code that changes on your phone every 20 seconds and you can't get into the website without entering that auto generated code well normal people can't get in there's probably some other back door if they really want to get you but i think you see that this is a better system than what 99 of the people have today but there's more to the story so just as with enterprise tech and dealing with the problem of ransomware air gaps are an essential tool in com combating our personal cyber crime so we've added a couple of items to jason's slide so the this air gap and the secure password notion what you want to do is make sure that that password manager is strong and it's easy for you to remember it's never used anywhere except for the password manager which also uses the secure email now if you've set up a non s if you've set up a two factor authentication sms or otherwise you're even more protected non-sms is better for the reasons we've described now for your crypto if you got a lot first of all get out of coinbase not only does coinbase gouge you on transaction costs but we'd recommend storing a good chunk of your crypto in an air-gapped vault now what you want to do is you want to make a few copies of this critical information you want to keep your secure password on you in one spot or memorize it but maybe keep a copy in your wallet your physical wallet and put the rest in a fireproof filing cabinet and a safety deposit box and or fire proof lock a lock box or a book in your library but but have multiple copies that somebody has to get to in order to hack you and you want to put also all your recovery codes so when you set all this up you're going to get recovery codes for the password manager in your crypto wallets that you own yeah it gets complicated and it's a pain but imagine having 30 percent or more of your liquid assets stolen now look we've really just scratched the surface here and you you're going to have to do some research and talk to people who have set this stuff up to get it right so figure out your secure email provider and then focus on the password manager now just google it and take your time deciding which one is the best for you here's a sample there are many some are free you know the better ones are for pay but carve out a full day to do research and set up your system take your time and think about how you use it before pulling the trigger on these tools and document everything offline air gap it now the other tooling that you want to use is the non-sms based third-party authentication app so in case you get sim hacked you've got further protection this turns your phone into a secure token generator without using sms unfortunately it's even more complicated because not only are there a lot of tools but not all your financial systems and apps we will support the same two-factor authentication app your password manager for example might only support duo your crypto exchange might support authy but your bank might only support symantec vip or it forces you to have a key fob or use sms so it's it's a mishmash so you may need to use multiple authentication apps to protect your liquid assets yeah i'm sorry but the consequences of not protecting your money and identity are worth the effort okay well i know there's a deviation from our normal enterprise tech discussions but look we're all the cios of our respective home i.t we're the network admin the storage admin the tech support help desk and we're the chief information security officer so as individuals we can only imagine the challenges of securing the enterprise and one of the things we talk about a lot in the cyber security space is complexity and fragmentation it's just the way it is now here's a chart from etr that we use frequently which lays out the security players in the etr data set on two dimensions net score or spending velocity in the vertical axis and market share or pervasiveness within the data set on the horizontal now for change i'm not going to elaborate on any of the specific vendors today you've seen a lot of this before but the chart underscores the complexity and fragmentation of this market and this is just really literally one tiny subset but the cloud which i said at the outset is a big reason that we got into this problem holds a key to solving it now here's one example listen to this clip of dave hatfield the longtime industry exec he's formerly an executive with pure storage he's now the ceo of laceworks lace work a very well-funded cloud-based security company that in our view is attacking one of the biggest problems in security and that's the fragmentation issue that we've often discussed take a listen so at the core of what we do you know you know it's um it's really trying to merge when we look at we look at security as a data problem security and compliance is the data problem and when you apply that to the cloud it's a massive data problem you know you literally have trillions of data points you know across shared infrastructure that we you need to be able to ingest and capture uh and then you need to be able to process efficiently and provide context back to the end user and so we approached it very differently than how legacy approaches have been uh in place you know largely rules-based engines that are written to be able to try and stop the bad guys and they miss a lot of things and so our data-driven approach uh that we patented is called uh polygraph it's it's a security architecture and there are three primary benefits it does a lot of things but the three things that we think are most profound first is it eliminates the need for you know dozens of point solutions um i was shocked when i you know kind of learned about security i was at symantec back in the day and just to see how fragmented this market is it's one of the biggest markets in tech 124 billion dollars in annual spend growing at 300 billion dollars in the next three years and it's massively fragmented and the average number of point solutions that customers have to deal with is dozens like literally 75 is the average number and so we wanted to take a platform approach to solve this problem where the larger the attack service that you put in the more data that you put into our machine learning algorithms the smarter that it gets and the higher the efficacies look hatfield nailed it in our view i mean the cloud and edge explodes the threat surface and this becomes a data problem at massive scale now is lace work going to solve all these problems no of course not but having researched this it's common for individuals to be managing dozens of tools and enterprises as hatfield said 75 on average with many hundreds being common the number one challenge we hear from csos and they'll tell you this is a lack of talent lack of human skills and bandwidth to solve the problem and a big part of that problem is fragmentation multiple apis scripts different standards that are constantly being updated and evolved so if the cloud can help us reduce tooling creep and simplify and automate at scale as the network continues to expand like the universe we can keep up with the adversaries they're never going to get ahead of them so look i know this topic is a bit off our normal swim lane but we think this is so important and no people that have been victimized so we wanted to call your attention to the exposure and try to get you to take some action even if it's baby steps so let's summarize you really want to begin by understanding where your credentials have been compromised because i promise they have been just look at your phone or look into your browser and see those recommendations and you're going to go whoa i got to get on this at least i hope you do that now you want to block out an entire day to focus on this and dig into it in order to protect you or your and your family's assets there's a lot of stake here and look one day is not going to kill you it's worth it then you want to begin building those three layers that we showed you choose a private email that is secure quote-unquote quote-unquote research the password manager that's find the one that's going to work for you do you want one that's web-based or an app that you download how does the password manager authenticate what do the reviews say how much does it cost don't rush into this you may want to test this out on a couple of low risk systems before fully committing because if you screw it up it's really a pain to unwind so don't rush into it then you want to figure out how to use your non-sms based two-factor authentication apps and identify which assets you want to protect you don't want to protect everything do you really care about your credentials on a site where you signed up years ago and never use it anymore it doesn't have any credit cards in it just delete it from your digital life and focus on your financial accounts your crypto and your sites where your credit card or other sensitive information lives and can be stolen also it's important to understand which institutions utilize which authentication methods really important that you make sure to document everything and air gap the most sensitive credentials and finally you're going to have to keep iterating and improving your security because this is a moving target you will never be 100 protected unfortunately this isn't a one-shot deal you're going to do a bunch of work it's hard but it's important work you're going to maintain your password you're going to change them every now and then maybe every few months six months maybe once a year whatever whatever is right for you and then a couple years down the road maybe two or three years down the road you might have to implement an entirely new system using the most modern tooling which we believe is going to be cloud-based or (upbeat music) >> From our studios in the heart of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto, California, this is a CUBE Conversation. >> Welcome everyone to this special CUBE Conversation Around the CUBE segment, Unpacking AI, number two, sponsored by Juniper Networks. We've got a great lineup here to go around the CUBE and unpack AI. We have Ken Jennings, all-time Jeopardy champion with us. Celebrity, great story there, we'll dig into that. John Hinson, director of AI at Evotek and Charna Parkey, who's the applied scientist at Textio. Thanks for joining us here for Around the CUBE Unpacking AI, appreciate it. First question I want to get to, Ken, you're notable for being beaten by a machine on Jeopardy. Everyone knows that story, but it really brings out the question of AI and the role AI is playing in society around obsolescence. We've been hearing gloom and doom around AI replacing people's jobs, and it's not really that way. What's your take on AI and replacing people's jobs? >> You know, I'm not an economist, so I can't speak to how easy it's going to be to retrain and re-skill tens of millions of people once these clerical and food prep and driving and whatever jobs go away, but I can definitely speak to the personal feeling of being in that situation, kind of watching the machine take your job on the assembly line and realizing that the thing you thought made you special no longer exists. If IBM throws enough money at it, your skill essentially is now obsolete. And it was kind of a disconcerting feeling. I think that what people need is to feel like they matter, and that went away for me very quickly when I realized that a black rectangle can now beat me at a game show. >> Okay John, what's your take on AI replacing jobs? What's your view on this? >> I think, look, we're all going to have to adapt. There's a lot of changes coming. There's changes coming socially, economically, politically. I think it's a disservice to us all to get to too indulgent around the idea that these things are going to change. We have to absorb these things, we have to be really smart about how we approach them. We have to be very open-minded about how these things are going to actually change us all. But ultimately, I think it's going to be positive at the end of the day. It's definitely going to be a little rough for a couple of years as we make all these adjustments, but I think what AI brings to the table is heads above kind of where we are today. >> Charna, your take around this, because the role of humans versus machines are pretty significant, they help each other. But is AI going to dominate over humans? >> Yeah, absolutely. I think there's a thing that we see over and over again in every bubble and collapse where, you know, in the automotive industry we certainly saw a bunch of jobs were lost, but a bunch of jobs were gained. And so we're just now actually getting into the phase where people are realizing that AI isn't just replacement, it has to be augmentation, right? We can't simply use images to replace recognition of people, we can't just use black box to give our FICO credit scores, it has to be inspectable. So there's a new field coming up now called explainable AI that actually is where we're moving towards and it's actually going to help society and create jobs. >> All right so let's stay on that next point for the next round, explainable AI. This points to a golden age. There's a debate around are we in a bubble or a golden age. A lot of people are negative right now on tech. You can see all the tech backlash. Amazon, the big tech companies like Apple and Facebook, there's a huge backlash around this so-called tech for society. Is this an indicator of a golden age coming? >> I think so, absolutely. We can take two examples of this. One would be where, you remember when Amazon built a hiring algorithm based upon their own resume data and they found that it was discriminating against women because they had only had men apply for it. Now with Textio we're building augmented writing across the audience and not from a single company and so companies like Johnson and Johnson are increasing the pipeline by more than nine percent which converts to 90,000 more women applying for their jobs. And so part of the difference there is one is explainable, one isn't, and one is using the right data set representing the audience that is consuming it and not a single company's hiring. So I think we're absolutely headed into more of a golden age, and I think these are some of the signs that people are starting to use it in the right way. >> John, what's your take? Obviously golden age doesn't look that to us right now. You see Facebook approving lies as ads, Twitter banning political ads. AI was supposed to solve all these problems. Is there light at the end of this dark tunnel we're on? >> Yeah, golden age for sure. I'm definitely a big believer in that. I think there's a new era amongst us on how we handle data in general. I think the most important thing we have here though is education around what this stuff is, how it works, how it's affecting our lives individually and at the corporate level. This is a new era of informing and augmenting literally everything we do. I see nothing but positives coming out of this. We have to be obviously very careful with our approaching all the biases that already exist today that are only going to be magnified with these types of algorithms at mass scale. But ultimately if we can get over that hurdle, which I believe collectively we all need to do together, I think we'd live in much better, less wasteful world just by approaching the data that's already at hand. >> Ken, what's your take on this? It's like a daily double question. Is it going to be a golden age? >> Laughs >> It's going to come sooner or later. We have to have catastrophe before, we have to have reality hit us in the face before we realize that tech is good, and shaping it? It's pretty ugly right now in some of the situations out there, especially in the political scene with the election in the US. You're seeing some negative things happening. What's your take on this? >> I'm much more skeptical than John and Charna. I feel like that kind of just blinkered, it's going to be great, is something you have to actually be in the tech industry and hearing all day to actually believe. I remember seeing kind of lay-person's exposure to Watson when Watson was on Jeopardy and hearing the questions reporters would ask and seeing the memes that would appear, and everyone's immediate reaction just to something as innocuous as a AI algorithm playing on a game show was to ask, is this Skynet from Terminator 2? Is this the computer from The Matrix? Is this HAL pushing us out of the airlock? Everybody immediately first goes to the tech is going to kill us. That's like everybody's first reaction, and it's weird. I don't know, you might say it's just because Hollywood has trained us to expect that plot development, but I almost think it's the other way around. Like that's a story we tell because we're deeply worried about our own meaning and obsolescence when we see how little these skills might be valued in 10, 20, 30 years. >> I can't tell you how much, by the way, Star Trek, Star Wars and Terminators probably affected the nomenclature of the technology. Everyone references Skynet. Oh my God, we're going to be taken over and killed by aliens and machines. This is a real fear. I thinks it's an initial reaction. You felt that Ken, so I've got to ask you, where do you think the crossover point is for people to internalize the benefits of say, AI for instance? Because people will say hey, look back at life before the iPhone, look at life before these tools were out there. Some will say society's gotten better, but yet there's this surveillance culture, things... And on and on. So what do you guys think the crossover point is for the reaction to change from oh my God, it's Skynet, gloom and doom to this actually could be good? >> It's incredibly tricky because as we've seen, the perception of AI both in and out of the industry changes as AI advances. As soon as machine learning can actually do a task, there's a tendency to say there's this no true Scotsman problem where we say well, that clearly can't be AI because I see how the trick worked. And yeah, humans lose at chess now. So when these small advances happen, the reaction is often oh, that's not really AI. And by the same token, it's not a game-changer when your email client can start to auto-complete your emails. That's a minor convenience to you. But you don't think oh, maybe Skynet is good. I really do think it's going to have to be, maybe the inflection point is when it starts to become so disruptive that actually public policy has to change. So we get serious about >> And public policy has started changing. >> whatever their reactions are. >> Charna, your thoughts. >> The public policy has started changing though. We just saw, I think it was in September, where California banned the use of AI in the body cameras, both real-time and after the fact. So I think that's part of the pivot point that we're actually seeing is that public policy is changing.` The state of Washington currently has a task force for AI who's making a set of recommendations for policy starting in December. But I think part of what we're missing is that we don't have enough digital natives in office to even attempt to, to your point Ken, predict what we're even going to be able to do with it, right? There is this fear because of misunderstanding, but we also don't have a respect of our political climate right now by a lot of our digital natives, and they need to be there to be making this policy. >> John, weigh in on this because you're director of AI, you're seeing positive, you have to deal with the uncertainty as well, the growth of machine learning. And just this week Google announced more TensorFlow for everybody. You're seeing Open Source. So there's a tech push, almost a democratization, going on with AI. So I think this crossover point might be sooner in front of us than people think. What's your thoughts? >> Yeah it's here right now. All these things can be essentially put into an environment. You can see these into products, or making business decisions or political decisions. These are all available right now. They're available today and its within 10 to 15 lines of code. It's all about the data sets, so you have to be really good stewards of the data that you're using to train your models. But I think the most important thing, back to the Skynet and all this science-fiction side, we have to collectively start telling the right stories. We need better stories than just this robots are going to take us over and destroy all of our jobs. I think more interesting stories really revolve around, what about public defenders who can have this informant augmentation algorithm that's going to help them get their job done? What about tailor-made medicine that's going to tell me exactly what the conditions are based off of a particular treatment plan instead of guessing? What about tailored education that's going to look at all of my strengths and weaknesses and present a plan for me? These are things that AI can do. Charna's exactly right, where if we don't get this into the right political atmosphere that's helping balance the capitalist side with the social side, we're going to be in trouble. So that's got to be embedded in every layer of enterprise as well as society in general. It's here, it's now, and it's real. >> Ken, before we move on to the ethics question, I want to get your thoughts on this because we have an Alexa at home. We had an Alexa at home; my wife made me get rid of it. We had an Apple device, what they're called... the Home pods, that's gone. I bought a Portal from Facebook because I always buy the earliest stuff, that's gone. We don't want listening devices in our house because in order to get that AI, you have to give up listening, and this has been an issue. What do you have to give to get? This has been a big question. What's your thoughts on all this? >> I was at an Amazon event where they were trumpeting how no technology had ever caught on faster than these personal digital assistants, and yet every time I'm in a use case, a household that's trying to use them, something goes terribly wrong. My friend had to rename his because the neighbor kids kept telling Alexa to do awful things. He renamed it computer, and now every time we use the word computer, the wall tells us something we don't want to know. >> (laughs) >> This is just anecdata, but maybe it speaks to something deeper, the fact that we don't necessarily like the feeling of being surveilled. IBM was always trying to push Watson as the star Trek computer that helpfully tells you exactly what you need to know in the right moment, but that's got downsides too. I feel like we're going to, if nothing else, we may start to value individual learning and knowledge less when we feel like a voice from the ceiling can deliver unto us the fact that we need. I think decision-making might suffer in that kind of a world. >> All right, this brings up ethics because I bring up the Amazon and the voice stuff because this is the new interface people want to have with machines. I didn't mention phones, Androids and Apple, they need to listen in order to make decisions. This brings up the ethics question around who sets the laws, what society should do about this, because we want the benefits of AI. John, you point out some of them. You got to give to get. Where are we on ethics? What's the opinion, what's the current view on this? John, we'll start with you on your ethics view on what needs to change now to move the ball faster. >> Data is gold. Data is gold at an exponential rate when you're talking about AI. There should be no situation where these companies get to collect data at no cost or no benefit to the end consumer. So ultimately we should have the option to opt out of any of these products and any of this type of surveillance wherever we can. Public safety is a little bit different situation, but on the commercial side, there is a lot of more expensive and even more difficult ways to train these models with a data set that isn't just basically grabbing everything our of your personal lives. I think that should be an option for consumers and that's one of those ethical check-marks. Again, ethics in general, the way that data's trained, the way that data's handled, the way models actually work, it has to be a primary reason for and approach of how you actually go about developing and delivering AI. That said, we cannot get over-indulgent in the fact that we can't do it because we're so fearful of the ethical outcomes. We have to find some middle ground and we have to find it quickly and collectively. >> Charna, what's your take on this? Ethics is super important to set the agenda for society to take advantage of all this. >> Yeah. I think we've got three ethical components here. We certainly have, as John mentioned, the data sets. However, it's also what behavior we're trying to change. So I believe the industry could benefit from a lot more behavioral science, so that we can understand whether or not the algorithms that we're building are changing behaviors that we actually want to change, right? And if we aren't, that's unethical. There is an entire field of ethics that needs to start getting put into our companies. We need an ethics board internally. A few companies are doing this already actually. I know a lot of the military companies do. I used to be in the defense industry, and so they've got a board of ethics before you can do things. The challenge is also though that as we're democratizing the algorithms themselves, people don't understand that you can't just get a set of data that represents the population. So this is true of image processing, where if we only used 100 images of a black woman, and we used 1,000 images of a white man because that was the distribution in our population, and then the algorithm could not detect the difference between skin tones for people of color, then we end up with situations where we end up in a police state where you put in an image of one black woman and it looks like ten of them and you can't distinguish between them. And yet, the confidence rate for the humans are actually higher, because they now have a machine backing their decision. And so they stop questioning, to your point, Ken, about what is the decision I'm making, they're like I'm so confident, this data told me so. And so there's a little bit of you need some expert in the loop and you also can't just have experts, because then you end up with Cambridge Analytica and all of the political things that happened there, not just in the US, but across 200 different elections and 30 different countries. And we are upset because it happened in the US, but this has been happening for years. So its just this ethical challenge of behavior change. It's not even AI and we do it all the time. Its why the cigarette industry is regulated (laughs). >> So Ken, what's your take on this? Obviously because society needs to have ethics. Who runs that? Companies? The law-makers? Someone's got to be responsible. >> I'm honestly a little pessimistic the general public will even demand this the way we're maybe hoping that they will. When I think about an example like Facebook, people just being able to, being willing to give away insane amounts of data through social media companies for the smallest of benefits: keeping in touch with people from high school they don't like. I mean, it really shows how little we value not being a product in this kind of situation. But I would like to see this kind of ethical decisions being made at the company-level. I feel like Google kind of surreptitiously moved away from it's little don't be evil mantra with the subtext that eh, maybe we'll be a little evil now. It just reminds me of Manhattan Project era thinking, where you could've gone to any of these nuclear scientists and said you're working on a real interesting puzzle here, it might advance the field, but like 200,000 civilians might die this summer. And I feel like they would've just looked at you and thought that's not really my bailiwick. I'm just trying to solve the fission problem. I would like to see these 10 companies actually having that kind of thinking internally. Not being so busy thinking if they can do something that they don't wonder if they should. >> That's a great point. This brings up the point of who is responsible. Almost as if who is less evil than the other person? Google, they don't do evil, but they're less evil than Amazon and Facebook and others. Who is responsible? The companies or the law-makers? Because if you look up some of the hearings in Washington, D.C., some of the law-makers we see up there, they don't know how the internet works, and it's pretty obvious that this is a problem. >> Yeah, well that's why Jack Dorsey of Twitter posted yesterday that he banned not just political ads, but also issue ads. This isn't something that they're making him do, but he understands that when you're using AI to target people, that it's not okay. At some point, while Mark is sitting on (laughs) this committee and giving his testimony, he's essentially asking to be regulated because he can't regulate himself. He's like well, everyone's doing it, so I'm going to do it too. That's not an okay excuse. We see this in the labor market though actually, where there's existing laws that prevent discrimination. It's actually the company's responsibility to make sure that the products that they purchase from any vendor isn't introducing discrimination into that process. So its not even the vendor that's held responsible, it's the company and their use of it. We saw in the NYPD actually that one of those image recognition systems came up and someone said well, he looked like, I forget the name of what the actor was, but some actor's name is what the perpetrator looked like and so they used an image of the actor to try and find the person who actually assaulted someone else. And that's, it's also the user problem that I'm super concerned about. >> So John, what's your take on this? Because these are companies are in business to make money, for profit, they're not the government. And who's the role, what should the government do? AI has to move forward. >> Yeah, we're all responsible. The companies are responsible. The companies that we work with, I have yet to interact with customers, or with our customers here, that have some insidious goal, that they're trying to outsmart their customers. They're not. Everyone's looking to do the best and deliver the most relevant products in the marketplace. The government, they absolutely... The political structure we have, it has to be really intelligent and it's got to get up-skilled in this space and it needs to do it quickly, both at the economy level, as well as for our defense. But the individuals, all of us as individuals, we are already subjected to this type of artificial intelligence in our everyday lives. Look at streaming, streaming media. Right now every single one of us goes out through a streaming source, and we're getting recommendations on what we should watch next. And we're already adapting to these things, I am. I'm like stop showing me all the stuff you know I want to watch, that's not interesting to me. I want to find something I don't know I want to watch, right? So we all have to get educated, we're all responsible for these things. And again, I see a much more positive side of this. I'm not trying to get into the fear-mongering side of all the things that could go wrong, I want to focus on the good stories, the positive stories. If I'm in a courtroom and I lose a court case because I couldn't afford the best attorney and I have the bias of a judge, I would certainly like artificial intelligence to make a determination that allows me to drive an appeal, as one example. Things like that are really creative in the world that we need to do. Tampering down this wild speculation we have on the markets. I mean, we are all victims of really bad data decisions right now, almost the worst data decisions. For me, I see this as a way to actually improve all those things. Fraud fees will be reduced. That helps everybody, right? Less speculation and these wild swings, these are all helpful things. >> Well Ken, John and Charna, thank- (audio feedback) >> Go ahead, finish. Get that word in. >> Sorry. I think that point you were making though John, is we are still a capitalist society, but we're no longer a shareholder capitalist society, we are a stakeholder capitalist society and the stakeholder is the society itself. It is us, it what we want to see. And so yes, I still want money. Obviously there are things that I want to buy, but I also care about well-being. I think it's that little shift that we're seeing that is actually you and I holding our own teams accountable for what they do. >> Yeah, culture first is a whole new shift going on in these companies that's a for-profit, mission-based. Ken, John, Charna, thanks for coming on Around the CUBE, Unpacking AI. Let's go around the CUBE Ken, John and Charna in that order, and just real quickly, unpacking AI, what's your final word? >> (laughs) I really... I'm interested in John's take that there's a democratization coming provided these tools will be available to everyone. I would certainly love to believe that. It seems like in the past, we've seen no, that access to these kind of powerful, paradigm-changing tools tend to be concentrated among a very small group of people and the benefits accrue to a very small group of people. But I hope that doesn't happen here. You know, I'm optimistic as well. I like the utopian side where we all have this amazing access to information and so many new problems can get solved with amazing amounts of data that we never could've touched before. Though you know, I think about that. I try to let that help me sleep at night, and not the fact that, you know... every public figure I see on TV is kind of out of touch about technology and only one candidate suggests the universal basic income, and it's kind of a crackpot idea. Those are the kind of things that keep me up at night. >> All right, John, final word. >> I think it's beautiful, AI's beautiful. We're on the cusp of a whole new world, it's nothing but positivity I see. We have to be careful. We're all nervous about it. None of us know how to approach these things, but as human beings, we've been here before. We're here all the time. And I believe that we can all collectively get a better lives for ourselves, for the environment, for everything that's out there. It's here, it's now, it's definitely real. I encourage everyone to hurry up on their own education. Every company, every layer of government to start really embracing these things and start paying attention. It's catching us all a little bit by surprise, but once you see it in production, you see it real, you'll be impressed. >> Okay, Charna, final word. >> I think one thing I want to leave people with is what we incentivize is what we end up optimizing for. This is the same for human behavior. You're training a new employee, you put incentives on the way that they sell, and that's, they game the system. AI's specifically find the optimum route, that is their job. So if we don't understand more complex cost functions, more complex representative ways of training, we're going to end up in a space, before we know it, that we can't get out of. And especially if we're using uninspectable AI. We really need to move towards augmentation. There are some companies that are implementing this now that you may not even know. Zillow, for example, is using AI to give you a cost for your home just by the photos and the words that you describe it, but they're also purchasing houses without a human in the loop in certain markets, based upon an inspection later by a human. And so there are these big bets that we're making within these massive corporations, but if you're going to do it as an individual, take a Coursera class on AI and take a Coursera class on ethics so that you can understand what the pitfalls are going to be, because that cost function is incredibly important. >> Okay, that's a wrap. in the heart of Silicon Valley, and the role AI is playing in society around obsolescence. and realizing that the thing you thought made you special I think it's going to be positive But is AI going to dominate over humans? in the automotive industry we certainly saw You can see all the tech backlash. that people are starting to use it in the right way. Obviously golden age doesn't look that to us right now. that are only going to be magnified Is it going to be a golden age? We have to have catastrophe before, the tech is going to kill us. for the reaction to change from I really do think it's going to have to be, And public policy their reactions are. and they need to be there to be making this policy. the growth of machine learning. So that's got to be embedded in every layer of because in order to get that AI, the wall tells us something we don't want to know. the fact that we don't necessarily like the feeling they need to listen in order to make decisions. that we can't do it because we're so fearful Ethics is super important to set the agenda for society There is an entire field of ethics that needs to start Obviously because society needs to have ethics. And I feel like they would've just looked at you in Washington, D.C., some of the law-makers we see up there, I forget the name of what the actor was, Because these are companies are in business to make money, and I have the bias of a judge, Get that word in. and the stakeholder is the society itself. I'm joining my co-host Jeff Kelly from Wiki bond.org, the best analyst in the business. Jeff, welcome back for another segment. End of the day, day one loving every minute. Okay. We're here with our guest. Jack Norris is a cm of map bar Jack. Welcome back to the cube. You've been on a few times. Um, so you guys have some news. Yes. So let's get right to the news. So you guys are a player in the business, so share with your news, the folks. Excellent jump right in. >>So, uh, two big announcements today, we announced that Amazon is integrating map bar as part of their Lastic MapReduce service and both edition or, or free edition. M three is available as well as M five directly with Amazon, Amazon in the cloud. >>So what's the value proposition. Why would a customer say, all right, I want to do this in the cloud manpower, an Amazon cloud rather than doing it on premise. >>Okay. So let's start with, I mean, there's a lot of value propositions, all balled up into one here. Uh, first of all, in the cloud, it allows them to spin up very quickly. Within a couple minutes, you can get, uh, you know, hundreds of nodes available. Um, and, uh, and depending on where you're processing the data, if you've got a lot of data in the cloud already makes a lot of sense to do the Hadoop processing directly there. So that's, that's one area. A second is you might have an on-premise cloud deployment and need to have a disaster recovery. So map R provides point in time, snapshots, uh, as well as, as a white area replication. So you can use mirroring having Amazon available as a target is a huge advantage. And then there's also a third application area where you can do processing of the data in the cloud and then synchronize those results to an on-premise. So basically process where the data is combined the results into a cluster on premise. So you >>Don't have to move the raw data. Uh, >>On-premise actually, it's all about let's do the processing on the data. Well, you know, the whole, >>The value proposition and big data in general is let's not move, move data as little as possible. Yep. Uh, you know, so you bring the computation to the data, if you can. Uh, so what are your take on this event? I mean, we've got, uh, this is a, you know, the 4th of June summit, uh, you know, Hortonworks is now fully taken over the show and talk about what you see out here in terms of, uh, the other vendors that play. And, uh, just to kind of the attendees, the vibe you're seeing, >>Uh, it's a lot of excitement. I think a big difference between last year, which seemed to be very developer focused. We're seeing a lot of, a lot of presentations by customers. A lot of information was shared by our customers today. It was fun to see that, uh, comScore's shared, uh, shared their success. Boeing gap map is, uh, it was great for us. >>Fantastic. We look at Amazon, Amazon, first of all, is the gold standard for public cloud. Right? They've knocked it out of the park. Everyone knows Amazon. Um, but they've been criticized on the big data front because of the cycle times involve on. Um, and some developers and mean for web service spending up and down. No problem. Um, and we're seeing businesses like Netflix run on Amazon. So Amazon is not a stranger to running scale for cloud, but Hadoop has kind of been a klugey thing for Amazon. So I think, you know, talk about why Amazon and you guys is a good fit out to the market. The market reach is great. So you guys know and have a huge addressable market. Are you guys helping solve some of that complexity with the, uh, with the MapReduce side? What's, >>What's the core, I guess the first comment first response would be, I think every customer should have that type of Kluge. Uh, uh, they could have the success that Amazon has in Hadoop. They have a huge number of, of, uh, of Hadoop deployments have been very, very successful. I think, >>I mean, you know what I mean by it's natural, it's, cloogy everywhere right now. That's the problem. But Amazon has huge scale, um, and had not a natural fit. There >>Is not a natural fit >>For the data for the data component. And, uh, uh, the HBase for example, >>Component. So where were Amazons, you know, made it very frictionless is the ability to spin up Hadoop to do the analysis. The gap that was missing is some of the, the ha capabilities. The data protection features the disaster recovery, and, you know, we're map are now it gives options to those customers. You know, if they want those kinds of enterprise enterprise grade features, now they have an option within EMR. It can select a M five and, and get moving if they want a performance. And in NFS, they've got the M three options. >>Well, congratulations. I think it's a great deal for you guys and for Amazon customers. My question for you is, as you guys explore the enterprise ready equation, which has been a big topic this week, um, what does that mean to you guys? Cause it means different things to different people depends on where, how high up to OLTB do you go? Right? I mean, we're how far from batch to real time transactional, um, levels you go, I mean, low bash, no problem. But as you start to get more near real time, it's going to be a little bit different gray in this house used security HDFS. Yeah. >>Yeah. So, so duke represents the strategic platform, right? Deploying that in an organization, um, you know, moving from kind of an experimental kind of lab based to production environment creates a different set of feature requirements. How available is it? How easy is it to integrate, right? How do I kind of protect that information and how do I share it? So when we say enterprise grade, we mean you can have SLA, she can put the data there and, and be confident that the data will remain there, that you can have a point in time recovery for an application error or user mistake. Uh, you can have a disaster recovery features in place. And then the integration is about not recreating the wheel to get access to the information. So Hadoop is very powerful, but it requires interacting through an HDFS API. If you can leverage it like through map bar with NFS standard file based access standard ODBC access, open it up. >>So I can use a standard file browser applications to see and manipulate the data really opens up the use cases. And then finally, what we announced in two dot oh, was multitenancy features. So as you share that information, all of a sudden the SLA is of different groups and well, these guys need it immediately. And if you've got some low grade batch jobs are going to impact that. So you want the ability to protect, to isolate, to secure information, and basically have virtual clusters within a cluster. And those features are important to cloud, but they're also important to on-premise >>So great for the hybrid cloud environments out there. I mean, the multitenancy cracking the code on that. Exactly huge. I mean, that is basically, I mean, right now most enterprises are like private cloud because it's like, they're basically extension of their data center and you're seeing a lot more activity in the hybrid cloud as a gateway to the public cloud. So, >>And, and, you know, frankly, people are kind of struggling with in an experimental with Apache Hadoop and the other distributions, the policies are either at the individual file level or the whole cluster. And it all almost forced the creation of separate physical clusters, which kind of goes against the whole Hadoop concept. So the ability to manage it, a logical layer have separate volumes where you can apply policies to apply that applies to all the content underneath really kind of makes it much, much easier for administrators to kind of deal with these multiple use cases. >>Amazon, Amazon has always been one of those cases for the enterprise where it's been one of those and they've, this has been talked about for years, put the credit card down, go play on Amazon, but then bring it back into the it group for certification. And so I think this is a nice product for you guys to bring that comfort. You know, we're very >>Excited the enterprise saying, Hey, >>Come play in Amazon. It's Bulletproof enterprise. Ready? So congratulations. >>I wonder, can we talk, uh, talk use cases. So what are you seeing in terms of, uh, evolving use cases as, as, uh, duke continues to become more enterprise grade, uh, depending on your definition, uh, but how is that impacting what you're seeing in terms of, even if it's just, uh, you know, the, the, um, the mindset even people think now, okay, now it's enterprise grade, well, maybe, you know, in, in, depending on who you talk to, it's been that way for a bit, but what kind of, uh, use cases are you seeing develop now that it's kind of starting to gain acceptance? It's like, okay, we can trust our data is going to be there, et cetera. >>So th there's a huge range of use cases that, uh, different by industry, different by kind of dataset that's being used against everything from really a deep store where you can do analytics on it. So you're selecting the content to something that's very, very analytic machine learning intensive, where you're doing sophisticated clustering algorithms, uh, et cetera, um, where we've seen kind of an expansion of use cases are around real-time streaming and you get streaming data sets that are kind of entering into the cloud. And, um, some of the more mission, critical data moving beyond just maybe click stream data or things that if you happen to drop a few, you know, not a big deal, right. Versus the kind of trust the business type of content. >>Talk a little bit about the streaming, uh, aspects, uh, because of course, you know, we think of duke, we think of a batch system in terms of streaming data into Hadoop. You know, that's, that's a different, uh, that's something we don't, we haven't heard a lot about. So how do you guys approach that? >>So, uh, one of the artifacts of, of HDFS, which is a, is a distributed file system that scores in the underlying Linux file system, it's append only. So as an administrator, you decide, how frequently do I close the file item? I going to do that an hourly basis on it every eight hours, because you have to close the file for other applications to see the data that's been written. Right? So one of the innovations that, uh, that we pursued was to rewrite that create this dynamic read-write layer. So you can continue to write data in any application is seeing the latest data that's written. So you can Mount the cluster as if it's storage and just continue to write data. There really opens up what's, uh, what's possible companies like Informatica, they're all from a messaging product integrates directly in with, with Matt BARR and provides. >>So what kind of advantage does that provide to the end user? What w w translate that into real business value? Why, why is that important? >>Well, so one example is comScore, comScore handles 30 billion, uh, objects a day, uh, as they go out and try to measure the use of, of the web and being able to continually write and stream that information and scale and handle that in a real time and do analytics and turn around data faster, has tremendous business value to them. If they're stuck in a batch environment where the load times lengthen to the point where all of a sudden they can't keep up and they're actually reporting on, you know, old news. And I think the analogy is forecasting rain a day after it's wet. Isn't exactly valuable. >>Yeah. So you guys, obviously a great deal of the enterprise ready for Amazon, big story, big coup for the company. What's next for you. I want to ask that and make sure you get that out there on your agenda for the next year, but then I want you to take a step back a year, maybe a year and a half ago. Look back at how much has changed in this landscape. Um, share your perspective because the market has gone through an evolution where there's been a market opportunity, and then everyone goes, oh my God, it's bigger than we actually thought. I mean, Jeff, Kelly's a groundbreaking report about the $50 billion market is now being talked about as too low. So big data has absolutely opened up to a huge, and it's changed some of the tactics around strategies. So your strategy, Hortonworks strategy, even cloud era. So, and it's still evolving. So what's changed for the folks out there from a year and a half ago, a year ago to today, and then look out for the next 12 months. What's on your agenda. >>Well, if, if you look back, I think we've been fairly consistent. Um, uh, I'm, I'm not going to take credit for the vision of our CEO and CTO. Uh, but they recognized early on that Hadoop was, uh, was a strategic platform and to be a strategic platform that applied to the broadest number of use cases and organizations required some, some areas, uh, of innovation and particularly the how it, how it scaled, how it was managed, how you stored and protected the information needed a rearchitecture. And I think that, you know, architecture matters when you're going through a paradigm shift, having the right one in place creates this, this ability, you know, to speed innovation. And I think that's, if there's anything that's changed, I think it's the speed of innovation has even increased in the Hadoop community. I think it's, it's created a focus on these enterprise grade features on how do we store this valuable information and, and continue to explore. >>And I think one of the observations I'll make is that on that note is that it really focuses everyone to be just mind your own business and get the products out. You know what I'm saying? We've seen everyone, the product focus be the number one conversation. >>What we've seen is customers, you know, start and they expand rapidly. Some of that student data growth, but a lot of it is student more and more applications are being delivered and, and, uh, and, and the values kind of extracted from the hoop platform and success breeds success. Well, >>Congratulations for all your success, great win with Amazon web services and make that a little bit more easier, more robust, and more, more features for them and you, uh, more revenue for part of our, um, and I want to personally thank you for your support to the cube.
