I'm john for your host of the cube we're here with Hillary Hunter, the VP and CTO and IBM fellow of IBM cloud at IBM. Hillary, Great to see you welcome back, You're no stranger to us in the cube your dentist few times. Thanks for coming on. >>Thanks so much for having me back. Great to talk more today >>I believe I B M is the premier sponsor for red hat summit this year. No, I mean I think they're somewhat interested in what's happening. >>Yeah, you know, somebody is such a great event for us because it brings together clients that, you know, we work together with red head on and gives us a chance to really talk about that overall journey to cloud and everything that we offer around cloud and cloud adoption um, and around redheads capabilities as well. So we look forward to the summit every year for sure. >>You know, the new IBM red hat relationship obviously pretty tight and successful seeing the early formations and customer attraction and just kind of the momentum, I'll never forget that Red hat something was in SAN Francisco. I sat down with Arvin at that time, uh, Red hat was not part of IBM and it was interesting. He was so tied into cloud native. It was almost as if he was dry running the acquisition, which he announced just moments later after that. But you can see the balance. The Ceo at IBM really totally sees the cloud. He sees that experience. He sees the customer impact. This has been an interesting year, especially with Covid and with the combination of red hat and IBM, this cloud priority for IT leaders is more important than ever before. What's your, what's your take on this? Because clearly you guys are all in on cloud, but not what people think, what's your, what's your view on this? >>Yeah. You know, from, from the perspective of those that are kind of data oriented IBM Institute for Business Value, did lots of studies over the last year, you know, saying that over 60% of leaders feel, you know, increased urgency to get to the cloud, um they're intending to accelerate their program to the cloud, but I think, you know, just even as consumers where each very conscious that our digital behaviors have changed a lot in the last year and we see that in our enterprise client base where um everything from, you know, a bank, we work that that that had to stand up their countries equivalent of the payroll protection program in a matter of weeks, which is just kind of unheard of to do something that robust that quickly or um, you know, retail obviously dealing with major changes, manufacturing, dealing with major changes and all consumers wanting to consume things on an app basis and such, not going into brick and mortar stores and such. And so everything has changed and months, I would say have sort of timeframes of months have been the norm instead of years for um, taking applications forward and modernizing them. And so this journey to cloud has compressed, It's accelerated. And as one client I spoke with said, uh, in the midst of last year, you know, it is existential that I get to cloud with urgency and I think That's been that has been the theme of 2020 and now also 2021. And so it is, it is the core technology for moving faster and dealing with all the change that we're all experiencing. >>That's just so right on point. But I got I want to ask you because this is the key trend enterprises are now realizing that cloud native architecture is based on open source specifically is a key architectural first principle now. >>Yeah. >>What's your, what, what would you say to the folks out there who were listening to this and watching this video, Who were out in the enterprise going, hey, that's a good call. I'm glad I did it. So I don't have any cognitive dissidence or I better get there faster. >>Yeah. You know, open source is such an important part of this conversation because I always say that open source moves at the rate and pays a global innovation, which is kind of a cute phrase that I really don't mean it in anyways, cute. It really is the case that the purpose of open sources for people globally to be contributing. And there's been innovation on everything from climate change to you know, musical applications to um things that are the fundamentals of major enterprise mission critical workloads that have happened is everyone is adopting cloud and open source faster. And so I think that, you know this choice to be on open source is a choice really, you know, to move at the pace of global innovation. It's a choice too um leverage capabilities that are portable and it's a choice to have flexibility in deployment because where everyone's I. T is deployed has also changed. And the balance of sort of where people need the cloud to kind of come to life and be has also changed as everyone's going through this period of significant change. >>That's awesome. IBM like Red has been a long supporter and has a history of supporting open source projects from Lenox to kubernetes. You guys, I think put a billion dollars in Lenox way back when it first started. Really power that movement. That's going back into the history books there. So how are you guys all collaborating today to advance the open source solutions for clients? >>Yeah, we remain very heavily invested in open source communities and invested in work jointly with Red Hat. Um you know, we enabled the technology known as um uh Rackham the short name for the Red Hat advanced cluster management software, um you know, in this last year, um and so, you know, provided that capability um to to become the basis of that that product. So we continue to, you know, move major projects into open source and we continue to encourage external innovators as well to create new capabilities. And open source are called for code initiatives for developers as an example, um have had specific programs around um uh social justice and racial issues. Um we have a new call for code out encouraging open source projects around climate change and sustainable agriculture and all those kind of topics and so everything from you know, topics with developers to core product portfolio for us. Um We have a very uh very firm commitment in an ongoing sustained contribution on an open source basis. >>I think that's important. Just to call out just to kind of take a little sidebar here. Um you guys really have a strong mission driven culture at IBM want to give you props for that. Just take a minute to say, Congratulations call for code incredible initiative. You guys do a great job. So congratulations on that. Appreciate. >>Thank you. Thank you. >>Um as a sponsor of Red Hat Summit this year, I am sponsoring the zone Read at um you have you have two sessions that you're hosting, Could you talk about what's going on? >>Yeah, the the two sessions, so one that I'm hosting is around um getting what we call 2.5 x value out of your cloud journey. Um and really looking at kind of how we're working with clients from the start of the journey of considering cloud through to actually deploying and managing environments and operating model on the cloud um and where we can extract greater value and then another session um that I'm doing with Roger Primo, our senior vice President for strategy at IBM We're talking about lessons and clouded option from the Fortune 500, so we're talking there about coca cola european bottling partners, about lumen technologies um and um also about wonderman Thompson, um and what they're doing with us with clouds, so kind of two sessions, kind of one talking a sort of a chalkboard style um A little bit of an informal conversation about what is value meaning cloud or what are we trying to get out of it together? Um And then a session with roger really kind of focused on enterprise use cases and real stories of cloud adoption. >>Alright so bottom line what's going to be in the sessions, why should I attend? What's the yeah >>so you know honest honestly I think that there's kind of this um there's this great hunger I would say in the industry right now to ascertain value um and in all I. T. Decision making, that's the key question right? Um not just go to the cloud because everyone's going to the cloud or not just adopt you know open source technologies because it's you know something that someone said to do, but what value are we going to get out of it? And then how do we have an intentional conversation about cloud architecture? How do we think about managing across environments in a consistent way? Um how do we think about extracting value in that journey of application, modernization, um and how do we structure and plan that in a way? Um that results in value to the business at the end of the day, because this notion of digital transformation is really what's underlying it. You want a different business outcome at the end of the day and the decisions that you take in your cloud journey picking. Um and open hybrid, multi cloud architecture leveraging technologies like IBM cloud satellite to have a consistent control plan across your environments, um leveraging particular programs that we have around security and compliance to accelerate the journey for regulated industries etcetera. Taking intentional decisions that are relevant to your industry that enable future flexibility and then enable a broad ecosystem of content, for example, through red hat marketplace, all the capabilities and content that deploy onto open shift, et cetera. Those are core foundational decisions that then unlock that value in the cloud journey and really result in a successful cloud experience and not just I kind of tried it and I did or didn't get out of it what I was expecting. So that's really what, you know, we talk about in these in these two sessions, um and walk through um in the second session than, you know, some client use cases of, of different levels and stages in that cloud journey, some really core enterprise capabilities and then Greenfield whitespace completely new capabilities and cloud can address that full spectrum. >>That's exciting not to get all nerdy for a second here, But you know, you bring up cloud architecture, hybrid cloud architecture and correct me if I'm wrong if you're going to address it because I think this is what I'm reporting and hearing in the industry against the killer problem everyone's trying to solve is you mentioned, um, data, you mentioned control playing for data, you mentioned security. These are like horizontally scalable operating model concepts. So if you think about an operating system, this is this is the architecture that becomes the cloud model hybrid model because it's not just public cloud cloud native or being born in the cloud. Like a startup. The integration of operating at scale is a distributed computing model. So you have an operating system concept with some systems engineering. Yeah, it sounds like a computer to me, right. It sounds like a mainframe. Sounds like something like that where you're thinking about not just software but operating model is, am I getting that right? Because this is like fundamental. >>Yeah, it's so fundamental. And I think it's a great analogy, right? I think it's um you know, everyone has kind of, their different description of what cloud is, what constitutes cloud and all that kind of thing, but I think it's great to think of it as a system, it's a system for computing and what we're trying to do with cloud, what we're trying to do with kubernetes is to orchestrate a bunch of, you know, computing in a consistent way, as, you know, other functions within a single server do. Um What we're trying to do with open shift is, you know, to enable um clients to consume things in a consistent way across many different environments. Again, that's the same sort of function um conceptually as, you know, an operating system or something like that is supposed to provide is to have a platform fundamentally, I think the word platform is important, right? Have a platform that's consistent across many environments and enables people to be productive in all those environments where they need to be doing their computing. >>We were talking before we came on camera about cloud history and we were kind of riffing back and forth around, oh yeah, five years ago or six years ago was all the conversations go to the cloud now, it's like serious conscience around the maturity of cloud and how to operate that scale in the cloud, which is complex, it's complex system and you have complexity around system complexity and novelty complexity, so you have kind of all these new things happening. So I want to ask you because you're an IBM fellow and you're on the cloud side at IBM with all this red hat goodness you've got going on, Can you give us a preview of the maturity model that you see the IBM season, that red hats doing so that these architectures can be consistent across the platforms, because you've got def sec ops, you've got all these new things, you've got security and data at scale, it's not that obviously it's not easy, but it has to be easier. What's what's the preview of the maturity model? >>Yeah, you know, it really is about kind of a one plus one equals three conversation because red hats approach to provide a consistent platform across different environments in terms of Lennox and Kubernetes and the open shift platform um enables that first conversation about consistency and maturity um in many cases comes from consistency, being able to have standards and consistency and deployment across different environments leads to efficiency. Um But then IBM odds on that, you know, a set of conversations also around data governance, um consistency of data, cataloguing data management across environments, machine learning and ai right bringing in A. I. For I. T. Operations, helping you be more efficient to diagnose problems in the IT environment, other things like that. And then, you know, in addition, you know, automation ultimately right when we're talking about F. R. I. T. Ops, but also automation which begins down at the open shift level, you know with use of answerable and other things like that and extends them up into automation and monitoring of the environment and the workloads and other things like that. And so it really is a set of unlocking value through increasing amounts of insight, consistency across environments, layering that up into the data layer. Um And then overall being able to do that, you know efficiently um and and in a consistent way across the different environments, you know, where cloud needs to be deployed in order to be most effective, >>You know, David Hunt and I always talk about IBM and all the years we've been covering with the Cube, I mean we've pretty much been to every IBM events since the Cube was founded and we're on our 11th year now watching the progression, you guys have so much expertise in so many different verticals, just a history and the expertise and the knowledge and the people. They're so smart. Um I have to ask you how you evolved your portfolio with the cloud now um as it's gone through, as we are in the 2021 having these mature conversations around, you know, full integration, large scale enterprise deployments, Critical Mission Mission Critical Applications, critical infrastructure, data, cybersecurity, global scale. How are you evolve your portfolio to better support your clients in this new environment? >>Yeah, there's a lot in there and you hit a lot of the keywords already. Thank you. But but I think that you know um we have oriented our portfolio is such that all of our systems support Red hat um and open shift, um our cloud, we have redhead open shift as a managed service and kubernetes is at the core of what we're doing as a cloud provider and achieving our own operational efficiencies um from the perspective of our software portfolio, our core products are delivered in the form of what we refer to as cloud packs on open shift and therefore deploy across all these different environments where open shift is supported, um products available through Red hat marketplace, you know, which facilitates the billing and purchasing an acquisition and installation of anything within the red hat ecosystem. And I think, you know, for us this is also then become also a journey about operational efficiency. We're working with many of our clients is we're kind of chatting about before about their cloud operating model, about their transformation um and ultimately in many cases about consumption of cloud as a service. Um and so um as we, you know, extend our own cloud capabilities, you know, out into other environment through distributed cloud program, what we refer to as as IBM cloud satellite, you know, that enables consistent and secure deployment of cloud um into any environment um where someone needs, you know, cloud to be operated. Um And that operating model conversation with our clients, you know, has to do with their own open shift environments that has to do with their software from IBM, it has to do their cloud services. And we're really ultimately looking to partner with clients to find efficiency in each stage of that journey and application modernization in deployment and then in getting consistency across all their environments, leveraging everything from uh the red hat, you know, ACM capabilities for cluster management up through a i for beauty shops and automation and use of a common console across services. And so it's an exciting time because we've been able to align our portfolio, get consistency and delivery of the red half capabilities across our full portfolio and then enable clients to progress to really efficient consumption of cloud. >>That's awesome. Great stuff there. I got to ask you the question that's on probably your customers minds. They say, okay, Hillary, you got me sold me on this. I get what's going on, I just gotta go faster. How do I advance my hybrid cloud model faster? What are you gonna do for me? What do you have within the red hat world and IBM world? How are you gonna make me go faster? That's in high quality way? >>Yeah. You know, we often like to start with an assessment of the application landscape because you move faster by moving strategically, right? So assessing applications and the opportunity to move most quickly into a cloud model, um, what to containerized first, what to invest in lift and shift perspective, etcetera. So we we help people look at um what is strategic to move and where the return on investment will be the greatest. We help them also with migrations, Right? So we can help jump in with additional skills and establish a cloud center of competency and other things like that. That can help them move faster as well as move faster with us. And I think ultimately choosing the right portfolio for what is defined as cloud is so important, having uh, an open based architecture and cloud deployment choice is so important so that you don't get stuck in where you made some of your initial decisions. And so I think those are kind of the three core components to how we're helping our clients move as quickly as possible and at the rate and pace that the current climate frankly demands of everyone. >>You know, I was joking with a friend the other night about databases and how generations you have an argument about what is it database, what's it used for. And then when you kind of get to that argument, all agree. Then a new database comes along and then it's for different functions. Just the growth in the internet and computing. Same with cloud, you kind of see a parallel thing where it's like debate, what is cloud? Why does he even exist? People have different definitions. That was, you know, I mean a decade or so ago. And then now we're at almost another point where it's again another read definition of, okay, what's next for cloud? It's almost like an inflection point here again. So with that I got to ask you as a fellow and IBM VP and Cto, what is the IBM cloud because if I'm going to have a discussion with IBM at the center of it, what does it mean to me? That's what people would like to know. How do you respond to that? >>Yeah. You know, I think two things I think number one to the, to the question of accelerating people's journeys to the cloud, we are very focused within the IBM cloud business um on our industry specific programs on our work with our traditional enterprise client base and regulated industries, things like what we're doing in cloud for financial services, where we're taking cloud, um and not just doing some sort of marketing but doing technology, which contextualize is cloud to tackle the difficult problems of those industries. So financial services, telco uh et cetera. And so I think that's really about next generation cloud, right? Not cloud, just for oh, I'm consuming some sauce, and so it's going to be in the cloud. Um but SAS and I SV capabilities and an organization's own capabilities delivered in a way appropriate to their industry in in a way that enables them to consume cloud faster. And I think along those lines then kind of second thing of, you know, whereas cloud headed the conversation in the industry around confidential computing, I think is increasingly important. Um It's an area that we've invested now for several generations of technology capability, confidential computing means being able to operate even in a cloud environment where there are others around um but still have complete privacy and authority over what you're doing. And that extra degree of protection is so important right now. It's such a critical conversation um with all of our clients. Obviously those in things like, you know, digital assets, custody or healthcare records or other things like that are very concerned and focused about data privacy and protection. And these technologies are obvious to them in many cases that yes, they should take that extra step and leverage confidential computing and additional data protection. But really confidential computing we're seeing growing as a topic zero trust other models like that because everyone wants to know that not only are they moving faster because they're moving to cloud, but they're doing so in a way that is without any compromise in their total security, um and their data protection on behalf of their clients. So it's exciting times. >>So it's so exciting just to think about the possibilities because trust more than ever now, we're on a global society, whether it's cyber security or personal interactions to data signing off on code, what's the mutability of it? I mean, it's a complete interplay of all the fun things of uh of the technology kind of coming together. >>Absolutely, yeah. There is so much coming together and confidential computing and realizing it has been a decade long journey for us. Right? We brought our first products actually into cloud in 2019, but its hardware, it's software, it services. It's a lot of different things coming together. Um but we've been able to bring them together, bring them together at enterprise scale able to run entire databases and large workloads and you know um pharmaceutical record system for Germany and customer records for daimler and um you know what we're doing with banks globally etcetera and so you know it's it's wonderful to see all of that work from our research division and our developers and our cloud teams kind of come together and come to fruition and and really be real and be product sizable. So it's it's very exciting times and it's it's a conversation that I think I encourage everyone to learn a little bit more about confidential computing. >>Hillary hunter. It's virtual this year. We're not in person because of the pandemic. We're doing the remote Cube Cube Virtual were the Cube virtual. I'm your host, John for here with Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web services, in for his annual at the end of the show comes on the Cube. This year, it's virtual Andy. Good to see you remotely in Seattle or in Palo Alto. Uh, Dave couldn't make it in a personal conflict, but he says, Hello, great to see you. >>Great to see you as well, John. It's an annual tradition. On the last day of reinvent. I wish we were doing it in person, but I'm glad at least were able to do it. Virtually >>the good news is, I know you could arrested last night normally at reinvent you just like we're all both losing our voice at the end of the show. At least me more than you, your and we're just at the end of like okay, Relief. It happens here. It's different. It's been three weeks has been virtual. Um, you guys had a unique format this year went much better than I expected. It would go on because I was pretty skeptical about these long, um, multiple days or weeks events. You guys did a good job of timing it out and creating these activations and with key news, starting with your keynote on December 1st. Now, at the end of the three weeks, um, tell me, are you surprised by the results? Can you give us, Ah, a feeling for how you think everything went? What's what's your take So far as we close out reinvented >>Well, I think it's going really well. I mean, we always gnome or a Z get past, reinvent and you start, you know, collecting all the feedback. But we've been watching all the metrics and you know, there's trade offs. Of course, now I think all of us giving our druthers would be together in Las Vegas, and I think it's hard to replace that feeling of being with people and the excitement of learning about things together and and making decisions together after you see different sessions that you're gonna make big changes in your company and for your customer experience. And yeah, and there's a community peace. And there's, you know, this from being there. There's a concert. The answer. I think people like being with one another. But, you know, I think this was the best that any of us could imagine doing doing a virtual event. And we had to really reinvent, reinvent and all the pieces to it. And now I think that some of the positive trade offs are they. You get a lot mawr engagement than you would normally get in person So normally. Last year, with about 65,000 people in Las Vegas this year, we had 530,000 people registered to reinvent and over 300,000 participate in some fashion. All the sessions had a lot more people who are participating just because you remove the constraints of of travel in costs, and so there are trade offs. I think we prefer being together, but I think it's been a really good community event, um, in learning event for for our customers, and we've been really pleased with it so >>far. No doubt I would totally agree with you. I think a lot of people like, Hey, I love to walk the floor and discover Harry and Sarah Davis moments of finding an exhibit her and the exhibit hall or or attending a session or going to a party, bumping into friends and seeing making new friends. But I think one of the things I want to get your reaction to it. So I think this is comes up. And, you know, we've been doing a lot of Q virtual for the past year, and and everyone pretty much agrees that when we go back, it's gonna be a hybrid world in the sense of events as well as cloud. You know that. But you know, I think one of the things that I noticed this year with reinvent is it almost was a democratization of reinvent. So you really had to reinvent the format. You had 300,000 plus people attend 500 pending email addresses, but now you've got a different kind of beehive community. So you're a bar raiser thinker. It's with the culture of Amazon. So I gotta ask you do the economics does this new kind of extra epiphany impact you and how you raise the bar to keep the best of the face to face when it comes back. And then if you keep the virtual any thoughts on how to leverage this and kind of get more open, it was free. You guys made it free this year and people did show up. >>Yeah, it's a really good question, and it's probably a question will be better equipped to answer in a month or two after we kind of debrief we always do after reading that we spend. Actually, I really enjoy the meeting because the team, the Collective A. W s team, works so hard in this event. There's so many months across everything. All the product teams, um, you know, all the marketing folks, all the event folks, and I think they do a terrific job with it. And we we do about 2.5 3 hour debrief on everything we did, things that we thought was really well the things that we thought we could do better and all the feedback we get from our community and so I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't find things from what we tried this year that we incorporate into what we do when we're back to being a person again. You know, of course, none of us really know when we'll be back in person again. Re event happens to fall on the time of the year, which is early December. And so you with with a lot of people seemingly able to get vaccinated, probably by you know, they'd spring early summer. You could kind of imagine that we might be able to reinvent in person next year. We'll have to see e think we all hope we will. But I'm sure there are a number of pieces that we will take from this and incorporate into what we do in person. And you know, then it's just a matter of how far you go. >>Fingers crossed and you know it's a hybrid world for the Cube two and reinvent and clouds. Let's get into the announcement. I want to get your your take as you look back now. I mean, how many announcements is you guys have me and a lot of announcements this year. Which ones did you like? Which one did you think were jumping off the page, which ones resonated the most or had impact. Can you share kind of just some stats on e mean how many announcements launches you did this >>year? But we had about 100 50 different new services and features that we announced over the last three weeks and reinvent And there, you know the question you're asking. I could easily spend another three hours like my Kino. You know, answering you all the ones that I like thought were important. You know, I think that, you know, some of the ones I think that really stood out for people. I think first on the compute side, I just think the, um the excitement around what we're doing with chips, um, is very clear. I think what we've done with gravitas to our generalized compute to give people 40% better price performance and they could find in the latest generation X 86 processors is just It's a huge deal. If you could save 40% price performance on computer, you get a lot more done for less on. Then you know some of the chip work we're doing in machine learning with inferential on the inference chips that we built And then what? We announced the trainee, um, on the machine learning training ship. People are very excited about the chip announcements. I think also, people on the container side is people are moving to smaller and smaller units of compute. I think people were very taken with the notion of E. K s and D. C s anywhere so they can run whatever container orchestration framework they're running in A. W s also on premises. To make it easier, Thio manage their deployments and containers. I think data stores was another space where I think people realize how much more data they're dealing with today. And we gave a couple statistics and the keynote that I think are kind of astonishing that, you know, every every hour today, people are creating mawr content that there was in an entire year, 20 years ago or the people expect more data to be created. The next three years in the prior 30 years combined these air astonishing numbers and it requires a brand new reinvention of data stores. And so I think people are very excited about Block Express, which is the first sand in the cloud and there really excited about Aurora in general, but then Aurora surveillance V two that allow you to scale up to hundreds of thousands of transactions per second and saved about 90% of supervision or people very excited about that. I think machine learning. You know, uh, Sage Maker has just been a game changer and the ease with which everyday developers and data scientists can build, train, tune into play machine learning models. And so we just keep knocking out things that are hard for people. Last year we launched the first i D for Machine Learning, the stage maker studio. This year, if you look at things that we announced, like Data Wrangler, which changes you know the process of Data Prep, which is one of the most time consuming pieces in machine learning or our feature store or the first see, I see deeper machine learning with pipelines or clarify, which allow you to have explain ability in your models. Those are big deals to people who are trying to build machine learning models, and you know that I'd say probably the last thing that we hear over and over again is really just the excitement around Connect, which is our call center service, which is just growing unbelievably fast and just, you know, the the fact that it's so easy to get started and so easy to scale so much more cost effective with, you know, built from the ground up on the cloud and with machine learning and ai embedded. And then adding some of the capabilities to give agents the right information, the right time about customers and products and real time capabilities for supervisors. Throw when calls were kind of going off the rails and to be ableto thio, stop the the contact before it becomes something, it hurts. The brand is there. Those are all big deals that people have been excited about. >>I think the connecting as I want to just jump on that for a second because I think when we first met many, many years ago, star eighth reinvent. You know the trends are always the same. You guys do a great job. Slew of announcements. You keep raising the bar. But one of the things that you mentioned to me when we talked about the origination of a W S was you were doing some stuff for Amazon proper, and you had a, you know, bootstrap team and you're solving your own problems, getting some scar tissue, the affiliate thing, all these examples. The trend is you guys tend to do stuff for yourself and then re factor it into potentially opportunities for your customers. And you're working backwards. All that good stuff. We'll get into that next section. But this year, more than ever, I think with the pandemic connect, you got chime, you got workspaces. This acceleration of you guys being pretty nimble on exposing these services. I mean, connect was a call center. It's an internal thing that you guys had been using. You re factored that for customer consumption. You see that kind of china? But you're not competing with Zoom. You're offering a service toe bundle in. Is this mawr relevant? Now, as you guys get bigger with more of these services because you're still big now you're still serving yourself. What? That seems to be a big trend now, coming out of the pandemic. Can you comment on um, >>yeah, It's a good question, John. And you know we do. We do a bunch of both. Frankly, you know, there there's some services where our customers. We're trying to solve certain problems and they tell us about those problems and then we build new services for him. So you know a good example that was red shift, which is our data warehouse and service, you know, two or three very large customers of ours. When we went to spend time with them and asked them what we could do to help them further, they just said, I wish I had a data warehousing service for the cloud that was built in the AWS style way. Um and they were really fed up with what they were using. Same thing was true with relation databases where people were just fed up with the old guard commercial, great commercial, great databases of Oracle and Sequel Server. And they hated the pricing and the proprietary nature of them and the punitive licensing. And they they wanted to move to these open engines like my sequel and post dress. But to get the same performance is the commercial great databases hard? So we solve that problem with them. With Aurora, which is our fastest growing service in our history, continues to be so there's sometimes when customers articulate a need, and we don't have a service that we've been running internally. But we way listen, and we have a very strong and innovative group of builders here where we build it for customers. And then there are other cases where customers say and connect with a great example of this. Connect with an example where some of our customers like into it. And Capital One said, You know, we need something for our contact center and customer service, and people weren't very happy with what they were using in that space. And they said, You, you've had to build something just to manage your retail business last 15, 20 years Can't you find a way to generalize that expose it? And when you have enough customers tell you that there's something that they want to use that you have experienced building. You start to think about it, and it's never a simple. It's just taking that technology and exposing it because it's often built, um, internally and you do a number of things to optimize it internally. But we have a way of building services and Amazon, where we do this working backwards process that you're referring to, where We build everything with the press release and frequently asked questions document, and we imagine that we're building it to be externalized even if it's an internal feature. But our feature for our retail business, it's only gonna be used as part of some other service that you never imagine Externalizing to third party developers. We always try and build it that way, and we always try to have well documented, hardened AP eyes so that other teams can use it without having to coordinate with those teams. And so it makes it easier for us to think about Externalizing it because we're a good part of the way there and we connect we. That's what we did way generalized it way built it from the ground up on top of the cloud. And then we embedded a bunch of AI and it so that people could do a number of things that would have taken him, you know, months to do with big development teams that they could really point, click and do so. We really try to do both. >>I think that's a great example of some of the scale benefits is worth calling out because that was a consistent theme this past year, The people we've reported on interviewed that Connect really was a lifeline for many during the pandemic and way >>have 5000 different customers who started using connect during the pandemic alone. Where they, you know, overnight they had to basically deal with having a a call center remotely. And so they picked up connect and they spun up call center remotely, and they didn't really quickly. And you know, it's that along with workspaces, which are virtual desktops in the cloud and things like Chime and some of our partners, Exume have really been lifelines for people. Thio have business continuity during a tandem. >>I think there's gonna be a whole set of new services that are gonna emerge You talked about in your keynote. We talked about it prior to the event where you know, if this pandemic hit with that five years ago, when there wasn't the advancements in, say, videoconferencing, it'd be a whole different world. And I think the whole world can see on full display that having integrated video communications and other cool things is gonna have a productivity benefit. And that's kind >>of could you imagine what the world would have been like the last nine months and we didn't have competent videoconferencing. I mean, just think about how different it would have been. And I think that all of these all of these capabilities today are kind of the occult 1.5 capabilities where, by the way, thank God for them. We've we've all been able to be productive because of them. But there's so early stage, they're all going to get evolved. I'm so significantly, I mean, even just today, you know, I was spending some time with with our team thinking about when we start to come back to the office and bigger numbers. And we do meetings with our remote partners, how we think about where the center of gravity should be and who should be on video conferencing and whether they should be allowed to kind of video conference in conference rooms, which are really hard to see them. We're only on their laptops, which are easier and what technology doesn't mean that you want in the conference rooms on both sides of the table, and how do you actually have it so that people who are remote could see which side of the table. I mean, all this stuff is yet to be invented. It will be very primitive for the next couple few years, even just interrupting one another in video conferencing people. When you do it, the sound counsel cancels each other out. So people don't really cut each other off and rip on one another. Same way, like all that, all that technology is going to get involved over time. It's a tremendous >>I could just see people fighting for the mute button. You know, that's power on these meetings. You know, Chuck on our team. All kidding aside, he was excited. We talked about Enron Kelly on your team, who runs product marketing on for your app side as well as computer networking storage. We're gonna do a green room app for the Q because you know, we're doing so many remote videos. We just did 112 here for reinvent one of things that people like is this idea of kind of being ready and kind of prepped. So again, this is a use case. We never would have thought off if there wasn't a pandemic. So and I think these are the kinds of innovation, thinking that seems small but works well when you start thinking about how easy it could be to say to integrate a chime through this sdk So this is the kind of things, that kind thing. So so with that, I want to get into your leadership principles because, you know, if you're a startup or a big company trying to reinvent, you're looking at the eight leadership principles you laid out, which were, um don't be afraid to reinvent. Acknowledge you can't fight gravity. Talent is hungry to reinvent solving real customer problems. Speed don't complex. If I use the platform with the broader set of tools, which is more a plug for you guys on cloud pull everything together with top down goals. Okay, great. How >>do you >>take those leadership principles and apply them broadly to companies and start ups? Because I think start ups in the garage are also gonna be there going. I'm going to jump on this wave. I'm inspired by the sea change. I'm gonna build something new or an enterprise. I'm gonna I'm gonna innovate. How do you How do you see these eight principles translating? >>Well, I think they're applicable to every company of every size and every industry and organization. Frankly, also, public sector organizations. I think in many ways startups have an advantage. And, you know, these were really keys to how to build a reinvention culture. And startups have an advantage because just by their very nature, they are inventive. You know, you can't you can't start a company that's a direct copy of somebody else that is an inventive where you have no chance. So startups already have, you know, a group of people that feel insurgent, and they wanted their passionate about certain customer experience. They want to invent it, and they know that they they only have so much time. Thio build something before money runs out and you know they have a number of those built in advantages. But I think larger companies are often where you see struggles and building a reinvention and invention culture and I've probably had in the last three weeks is part of reinvent probably about 40 different customer meetings with, you know, probably 75 different companies were accomplished in those or so and and I think that I met with a lot of leaders of companies where I think these reinvention principles really resonated, and I think they're they're battling with them and, you know, I think that it starts with the leaders if you, you know, when you have big companies that have been doing things a certain way for a long period of time, there's a fair bit of inertia that sets in and a lot of times not ill intended. It's just a big group of people in the middle who've been doing things a certain way for a long time and aren't that keen to change sometimes because it means ripping up something that they that they built and they remember how hard they worked on it. And sometimes it's because they don't know what it means for themselves. And you know, it takes the leadership team deciding that we are going to change. And usually that means they have to be able to have access to what's really happening in their business, what's really happening in their products in the market. But what customers really think of it and what they need to change and then having the courage and the energy, frankly, to pick the company up and push him to change because you're gonna have to fight a lot of inertia. So it always starts with the leaders. And in addition to having access that truth and deciding to make the change, you've gotta also set aggressive top down goal. The force of the organization moved faster than otherwise would and that also, sometimes leaders decide they're gonna want to change and they say they're going to change and they don't really set the goal. And they were kind of lessons and kind of doesn't listen. You know, we have a term the principal we have inside Amazon when we talk about the difference between good intentions and mechanisms and good intentions is saying we need to change and we need to invent, reinvent who we are and everyone has the right intentions. But nothing happens. Ah, mechanism, as opposed to good intention, is saying like Capital One did. We're going to reinvent our consumer digital banking platform in the next 18 months, and we're gonna meet every couple of weeks to see where we are into problem solved, like that's a mechanism. It's much harder to escape getting that done. Then somebody just saying we're going to reinvent, not checking on it, you know? And so, you know, I think that starts with the leaders. And then I think that you gotta have the right talent. You gotta have people who are excited about inventing, as opposed to really, Justin, what they built over a number of years, and yet at the same time, you're gonna make sure you don't hire people who were just building things that they're interested in. They went where they think the tech is cool as opposed to what customers want. And then I think you've got to Really You gotta build speed into your culture. And I think in some ways this is the very biggest challenge for a lot of enterprises. And I just I speak to so many leaders who kind of resigned themselves to moving slowly because they say you don't understand my like, companies big and the culture just move slow with regulator. There are a lot of reasons people will give you on why they have to move slow. But, you know, moving with speed is a choice. It's not something that your preordained with or not it is absolutely a leadership choice. And it can't happen overnight. You can't flip a switch and make it happen, but you can build a bunch of things into your culture first, starting with people. Understand that you are gonna move fast and then building an opportunity for people. Experiment quickly and reward people who experiment and to figure out the difference between one way doors and two way doors and things that are too way doors, letting people move quick and try things. You have to build that muscle or when it really comes, time to reinvent you won't have. >>That's a great point in the muscle on that's that's critical. You know, one of things I want to bring up. You brought on your keynote and you talk to me privately about it is you gave attribute in a way to Clay Christensen, who you called out on your keynote. Who was a professor at Harvard. Um, and he was you impressed by him and and you quoted him and he was He was your professor there, Um, your competitive person and you know, companies have strategy departments, and competitive strategy is not necessarily departments of mindset, and you were kind of brought this out in a zone undertone in your talk, we're saying you've got to be competitive in the sense of you got to survive and you've got to thrive. And you're kind of talking about rebuilding and building and, you know, Clay Christians. Innovative dilemma. Famous book is a mother, mother teachings around metrics and strategy and prescriptions. If he were alive today and he was with us, what would he be talking about? Because, you know, you have kind of stuck in the middle. Strategy was not Clay Christensen thing, but, you know, companies have to decide who they are. Their first principles face the truth. Some of the things you mentioned, what would we be talking with him about if we were talking about the innovator's dilemma with respect to, say, cloud and and some of the key decisions that have to be made right now? >>Well, then, Clay Christensen on it. Sounds like you read some of these books on. Guy had the fortunate, um, you know, being able to sit in classes that he taught. And also I got a chance. Thio, meet with him a couple of times after I graduated. Um, school, you know, kind of as more of a professional sorts. You can call me that. And, uh, he he was so thoughtful. He wasn't just thoughtful about innovation. He was thoughtful about how to get product market fit. And he was thoughtful about what your priorities in life were and how to build families. And, I mean, he really was one of the most thoughtful, innovative, um, you know, forward thinking, uh, strategist, I had the opportunity Thio encounter and that I've read, and so I'm very appreciative of having the opportunity Thio learn from him. And a lot of I mean, I think that he would probably be continuing to talk about a lot of the principles which I happen to think are evergreen that he he taught and there's it relates to the cloud. I think that one of the things that quite talked all the time about in all kinds of industries is that disruption always happens at the low end. It always happens with products that seem like they're not sophisticated enough. Don't do enough. And people always pooh pooh them because they say they won't do these things. And we learned this. I mean, I watched in the beginning of it of us. When we lost just three, we had so many people try and compare it Thio things like e m. C. And of course, it was very different than EMC. Um, but it was much simpler, but And it and it did a certain set of activities incredibly well at 1 1/100 of the price that's disrupted, you know, like 1 1/100 of the price. You find that builders, um, find a lot of utility for products like that. And so, you know, I think that it always starts with simple needs and products that aren't fully developed. That overtime continue to move their way up. Thio addressing Maura, Maura the market. And that's what we did with is what we've done with all our services. That's three and easy to and party ass and roar and things like that. And I think that there are lots of lessons is still apply. I think if you look at, um, containers and how that's changing what compute looks like, I think if you look at event driven, serverless compute in Lambda. Lambda is a great example of of really ah, derivative plays teaching, which is we knew when we were building Lambda that as people became excited about that programming model it would cannibalize easy to in our core compute service. And there are a lot of companies that won't do that. And for us we were trying to build a business that outlasts all of us. And that's you know, it's successful over a long period of time, and the the best way I know to do that is to listen to what customers We're trying to solve an event on their behalf, even if it means in the short term you may cannibalize yourself. And so that's what we always think about is, you know, wherever we see an opportunity to provide a better customer experience, even if it means in the short term, make cannibalism revenue leg lambda with complete with easy to our over our surveillance with provisions or are we're going to do it because we're gonna take the long view, and we believe that we serve customers well over a long period of time. We have a chance to do >>that. It's a cannibalize yourself and have someone else do it to you, right? That's that's the philosophy. Alright, fine. I know you've got tight for time. We got a you got a hard stop, But let's talk about the vaccine because you know, you brought up in the keynote carrier was a featured thing. And look at the news headlines. Now you got the shots being administered. You're starting to see, um, hashtag going around. I got my shot. So, you know, there's a There's a really Momenta. Mit's an uplifting vibe here. Amazon's involved in this and you talked about it. Can you share the innovation? There can just give us an update and what's come out of that and this supply chain factor. The cold chain. You guys were pretty instrumental in that share your your thoughts. >>We've been really excited and privileged partner with companies who are really trying to change what's possible for all of us. And I think you know it started with some of the companies producing vaccines. If you look at what we do with Moderna, where they built their digital manufacturing sweet on top of us in supply chain, where they used us for computing, storage and data warehousing and machine learning, and and on top of AWS they built, they're Cove in 19 vaccine candidate in 42 days when it normally takes 20 months. I mean, that is a total game changer. It's a game changer for all of us and getting the vaccine faster. But also, you just think about what that means for healthcare moving forward, it zits very exciting. And, yeah, I love what carriers doing. Kariya is building this product on top of AWS called links, which is giving them end and visibility over the transportation and in temperature of of the culture and everything they're delivering. And so it, uh, it changes what happens not only for food, ways and spoilage, but if you think about how much of the vaccine they're gonna actually transport to people and where several these vaccines need the right temperature control, it's it's a big deal. And what you know, I think there are a great example to what carrier is where. You know, if you think about the theme of this ring and then I talked about in my keynote, if you want to survive as an organization over a long period of time, you're gonna have to reinvent yourself. You're gonna have to probably do it. Multiple times over and the key to reinventing his first building, the right reinvention culture. And we talk about some of those principles earlier, but you also have to be aware of the technology that's available that allows you to do that. If you look at Carrier, they have built a very, very strong reinvention culture. And then, if you look at how they're leveraging, compute and storage and I o. T at the edge and machine learning, they know what's available, and they're using that technology to reinvent what's what's possible, and we're gonna all benefit because of >>it. All right. Yeah, a certificate one year that is gonna rapidly put new talent in the market. Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. >> Thank you so much. We're really excited by this announcement today on Dhe. What's exciting about it is Ah, first of all, it's the first cloud computing degree in the Middle East on the other. The other element to this is that the the students suits from any background. Any discipline can get a really good understanding about cloud technology for the certification because the challenges we face in the region right now are we don't have enough skilled tech talent on we don't have enough skill talent to fill the jobs are available in the region. This is not just a regional thing is you know this is a global issue on universities. Have Thio adapt, be a bit more forward thinking live in the future. And we feel really optimistic with our partnership with Amazon today that we can actually fulfill the needs off public sector employers, entrepreneurs, governments throughout the region. And that's the exciting thing >> for us. I mean, let's just take a minute to explain the two components. One's a four year degree, one when you just give a little quick DT on ongoing questions. >> So I need a four year back to the program is gonna be delivered in a very different wave in the traditional academic program is gonna be heavily integrated with the needs of employers, so employees are gonna be really involved in curriculum design. We like them to be part of a teacher faculty as well. The way that the program will be delivered will be very much in a kind of project based way. So it's about developing not just knowledge, but the skills, competency values mindset required to be successful in the 21st century. That's exciting. Think about it, and of course, you know, looking at some of the detail behind the curriculum you're looking at networking, security, machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data. So the fact that this cloud base is actually just a small component to what it opens up in terms of broader skill sets >> I mean, one of the things that we always comment here on the Cube as we cover Amazons reinvent their big annual conference. And the joke is how many more announcement's gonna make this year a tsunami of new things coming. So certainly it's tough to keep up. Many people say that, but for the young people in school, this is relevant stuff. This is like pathway to success. Yeah, job making some cash, making some money, get that's what the purpose of education is. >> Well, I think I think there's a couple of That's a great point. The first thing is, education systems now need to live in the future. Living in a current or in many cases, the past is no acceptable. So it means it means taking some sort of calculated risk. But we're very clear in terms of the direction of travel with regard to technology in the future, jobs The reality is today. But 2/3 of the world's population already needs re Skilling. Those are the challenges we face today. Young people are purpose driven. They know where the where jobs are gonna be. They want to work for themselves. You know, they understand far better than anyone else where the way the future is unraveling do they >> understand how relevant this is? I mean, that's pretty obvious. We're in the industry. Yeah, we kind of obviously known you've been part of you are getting that This is wave. This wave is not gonna end for a while. This is gonna be a great upward migration for opportunity. You know, it's still learning on the young kids part. >> I think I think I think sometimes in education we do a disservice to young people. They're so well informed they understand the market, the trends, the way the technology shaping the future on reality is that what student learns in year one of the university, 50% and acknowledge will be obsolete by the time they graduate. So the focus is no just around giving him a degree. This is also about Skillet Re Skilling and upscaling. People have graduated people in the workforce. So this is a far wider opportunity, even just young people. Well, >> I'll tell you, one thing that gets my attention is that this reminds me of theeighties glider science because I got a degree. I was a freshman. 1983 was just at the beginning of the operating systems movement. Lennox was even around yet Units was just emerging on the scene and was interesting what we learned as building blocks with operating systems and that becoming obsolete in the sense that we don't use it anymore. But coding still happen. So this is had scaled to it with Amazon. You got okay. Easy to industry. Yeah. Now you got He's mentioned machine learning at Lambda Functions server lists. Yep. I'm so much more stuff there for a variety of jobs. >> I think this is just the tip of the iceberg. And I think for us, the way that education is evolving is that we we really believe that education will be more modular, as you say, credentials based, um lifelong on the channel. So some of it will be hands on. Some would be through other channels on competency base, and I think that's the thing. I think competency for us is about the kind of mobilization of the knowledge, your skills, the values attributes. And that's the bit it's gonna add. Value Thio economies throughout >> the world. So had a strategy. You gotta look at the chessboard in the future. You mentioned I live in the future. Yeah. What are some of the feedback you've gotten as you talk to folks in the industry when you roll this out? Um, doing some press interviews? I know you've had some feedback. What's the what's the general sentiment right now? >> Really excited. I think that we talk to employees all the time. We talked to sm easy. You talk to big players like Amazon. I think that in the in the region, I think when we talk about the scale of disruption, I think well, the way we talk about it in U. S. Or Europe is very different to the way we talk about it. I think the Middle East region, like Mellie developing parts of the world still playing catch up on old there. But what you'll find is once they've caught up, the adoption rates go through the roof and then that's that's the challenge for us. Because you know what? We see the uptake. Now we see the update every year growing and growing. And now the next challenge is moving into government, moving into the private sector on upscaling and re Skilling, though. So we're just at the start of this kind of huge opportunity. John and I see it being, you know, exponentially over the next five years. You >> know, it's interesting. I live in San Francisco, Bay Area and Silicon Valley. Invalid. We'll tow you. See what Berkeley's doing. Stand up for you. If you look at Berkeley in particular, number one classes are the data science class and the CS intro. Yeah, I mean, they're kind of hybrids, basically, is all cloudy? Do anything with coding. It's gonna be cloud based, right? Um, and seal, who's the deputy Group CEO? Banky, ABC. I just interviewed earlier today. He said, Aye, aye. He thinks is the biggest thing that's gonna happen. So it's not just racking and stacking standing up infrastructure with Amazon, although great to learn that it will be nerds. Geeks do that. There's a huge machine learning a I field. Yeah, I think that's gonna be something. Is head of strategy. You gotta keep your eye on the prize. They're absolutely What's your view on that? How do you see that happening? >> I think you're right. I think only CD of recently released some doctor to say that over 20% of jobs will be automated as a result of their arrive in the next few years. I think our role is to prepare young people regardless of what they're studying. Fool. Aye, aye. On the impact of machine learning. So I'll give an example. Medicine. You can make a diagnosis now for a patient diagnosis in a fraction of a second compared to what we used to be able to buy using I. Now the reality is that although I all I can give you that information you as a patient, one a robot to give you that diagnosis, right? So our job, I think, is to look at the skills that will define what defines us as human beings away from robots. And that's empathy. That's the stuff around building, building connections around team, working around collaboration. And actually those are the things the education systems of a designed not to deliver. So our job now is by embracing these types of new program is it is. It is to start to work on those softer skills on Prepare this generation of shooting for the for the A. I will that we're moving into >> camera, and I was so excited for your opportunity. Computer science cloud >> all kind, bundle >> together and software is powering this new job. As we say, it's the keys to the kingdom. In this case, it could be the keys to the kingdom. >> Well, I think for us as the national university on for many Ah, not just Bahrain. But for many developing an emerging countries around the world, this is far greater than just technology. Or create Jarvis's about sovereignty. Because if you look at many countries, they import talent. They have to import hardware, software, computers and things imported. This is a great opportunity to help create a workforce but actually flips it on its head. Becomes the innovators, becomes the job creators. So that's the exciting thing for us. It really is >> a generational accident. This is an opportunity for the younger generation to literally take the keys to the kingdom. Absolutely absolutely thanks so much for coming. Thank you.
