(bright music) >> Okay, we're back. With Jeff and Travis Vigil to dig deeper into the news. Guys, again, good to see you. Travis, if you could, maybe before we get into the news, can you set the business context for us? What's going on out there? >> Yeah, thanks for that question, Dave. To set a little bit of the context when you look at the data protection market, Dell has been a leader in providing solutions to customers for going on nearly two decades now. We have tens of thousands of people using our appliances. We have multiple thousands of people using our latest, modern, simple power protect data manager software. And as Jeff mentioned, we have, you know, 1700 customers protecting 14 exabytes of data in the public clouds today. And that foundation gives us a unique vantage point. We talked to a lot of customers. And they're really telling us three things. They want simple solutions, they want us to help them modernize, and they want us as the highest priority, maintain that high degree of resiliency that they expect from our data protection solutions. So that's the backdrop to the news today. And as we go through the news, I think you'll agree that each of these announcements deliver on those pillars. And in particular, today we're announcing the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance. We are announcing PowerProtect Cyber Recovery enhancements, and we are announcing enhancements to our APEX data storage services. >> Okay, so three pieces, let's dig to that. It's interesting appliance, everybody wants software but then you talk to customers and they're like, "Well, we actually want appliances because we just want to put it in and it works, and performs great." So what do we need to know about the appliance? What's the news there? >> Well, you know, part of the reason I gave you some of those stats to begin with is, that we have this strong foundation of experience, but also intellectual property. Components that we've taken, that have been battle tested in the market. And we've put them together in a new simple, integrated appliance that really combines the best of the target appliance capabilities, we have with that modern, simple software. And we've integrated it from the, you know, sort of taking all of those pieces, putting them together in a simple, easy-to-use and easy-to-scale interface for customers. >> So the premise that I've been putting forth for, you know, months now, probably well over a year, is that data protection is becoming an extension of your cybersecurity strategies. So I'm interested in your perspective on Cyber Recovery, your specific news that you have there? >> Yeah, you know, we are in addition to simplifying things via the appliance. We are providing solutions for customers no matter where they're deploying. And Cyber Recovery, especially, when it comes to cloud deployments, it's an increasing area of interest and deployment that we see with our customers. So what we're announcing today is that we're expanding our Cyber Recovery services to be available in Google Cloud. With this announcement, it means we're available in all three of the major Clouds. And it really provides customers the flexibility to cure their data no matter if they're running, you know, on premises, in a Colo, at the edge in the public cloud. And the other nice thing about this announcement is that you have the ability to use Google Cloud as a Cyber Recovery vault. That really allows customers to isolate critical data and they can recover that critical data from the vault back to on-premises or from that vault back to running their cyber protection, or their data protection solutions in the public cloud. >> I always involve my favorite Matt Baker here, It's not a zero-sum game, but this is a perfect example where there's opportunities for a company like Dell to partner with the public cloud provider. You've got capabilities that don't exist there. You've got the on-prem capabilities. We could talk about Edge all day, but that's a different topic. Okay so my other question, Travis, is how does this all fit into APEX? We hear a lot about APEX as a service it's sort of the new hot thing. What's happening there? What's the news around APEX? >> Yeah, we've seen incredible momentum with our APEX Solutions, since we introduced data protection options into them earlier this year. And we're really building on that momentum with this announcement being, you know, providing solutions that allow customers to consume flexibly. And so what we're announcing specifically is, that we're expanding APEX Data Storage Services to include a data protection option. And it's like with all APEX offers, it's a pay-as-you go solution. Really streamlines the process of customers purchasing, deploying, maintaining and managing their backup software. All a customer really needs to do is, you know, specify their base capacity, they specify their performance tier, they tell us do they want a one-year term, or a three-year term? And we take it from there. We get them up and running, so they can start deploying and consuming flexibly. And as with many of our APEX solutions, it's a simple user experience all exposed through a unified APEX console. >> Okay, so you're keeping a simple, like, I think large, medium, small, you know, we hear a lot about T-shirt sizes. I'm a big fan of that 'cause you guys should be smart enough to figure out, you know, based on my workload, what I need. How different is this? I wonder if you guys could address this, Jeff, maybe you can- >> So, I'll start and then, pitch me, you know, Travis, you jump in when I screw up here so... >> Awesome. >> So first I'd say we offer innovative Multi-cloud data protection solutions. We provide that deliver performance, efficiency and scale that our customers demand and require. We support as Travis at all the major public clouds. We have a broad ecosystem of workload support and I guess the great news is we're up to 80% more cost effective than any of the competition. >> 80%? >> 80%. >> That's a big number. Travis, what's your point of view on this? >> Yeah, I think number one, end-to-end data protection. We, we are that one stop shop that I talked about. Whether it's a simplified appliance, whether it's deployed in the cloud, whether it's at the edge, whether it's integrated appliances, target appliances, software we have solutions that span the gamut as a service. I mentioned the APEX solution as well. So really we can provide solutions that helps support customers and protect them, any workload, any cloud, anywhere that data lives, Edge core to cloud. The other thing that we're here, as a big differentiator for Dell and Jeff touched on this a little bit earlier, is our intelligent cyber resiliency. We have a unique combination in the market where we can offer immutability or protection against deletion as sort of that first line of defense. But we can also offer a second level of defense which is isolation, talking about data vaults or cyber vaults and Cyber Recovery. And more importantly, the intelligence that goes around that vault. It can look at detecting cyber-attacks, it can help customer speed time to recovery and really provides AI and ML to help early diagnosis of a cyber-attack and fast recovery should a cyber-attack occur. And you know, if you look at customer adoption of that solution specifically in the clouds, we have over 1300 customers utilizing PowerProtect Cyber Recovery. >> So I think it's fair to say that your, I mean your portfolio has obviously been a big differentiator whenever I talk to, you know your finance team, Michael Dell, et cetera that an end-to-end capability that that your ability to manage throughout the supply chain. We actually just did an event recently with you guys where you went into what you're doing to make infrastructure trusted. And so my take on that is, in a lot of respects, you're shifting, you know, the client's burden to your R&D, and now, they have a lot of work to do, so it's not like they can go home and just relax, but that's a key part of the partnership that I see. Jeff, I wonder if you could give us the final thoughts. >> Sure, Dell has a long history of being a trusted partner within IT, right? So we have unmatched capabilities, going back to your point, we have the broadest portfolio, we have, you know, we're a leader in every category that we participate and we have a broad deep breadth of portfolio. We have scale, we have innovation that is just unmatched. Within data protection itself, we have the trusted market leader, no if and or buts. We're a number one for both data protection software in appliances per IDC. And we were just named, for the 17th consecutive time the leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. So bottom line is customers can count on Dell. >> Yeah. And I think again, we're seeing the evolution of data protection. It's not like the last 10 years, it's really becoming an adjacency and really a key component of your cyber strategy. I think those two parts of the organization are coming together. We said that data recovery strategies have to be built into security practices and procedures and by default, this should include modern hardware and software. Now in addition, to reviewing some of the challenges that customers face, which have been pretty well documented, we heard about new products that Dell Technologies is bringing to the marketplace. Specifically, address these customer concerns. There were three that we talked about today. First, the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance, which is an integrated system. Taking advantage of Dell's history in data protection but adding new capabilities. And I want to come back to that in a moment. Second is Dell's PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for Google Cloud platform. This rounds out the big three public cloud providers for Dell, which joins AWS and Azure support. Now finally, Dell has made its target backup appliances available in APEX. You might recall earlier this year, we saw the introduction from Dell of APEX backup services. And then in May at Dell Technologies World, we heard about the introduction of APEX Cyber Recovery Services. And today, Dell is making its most popular backup appliances available in APEX. Now I want to come back to the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance because it's a new integrated appliance. And I asked Dell off camera, really, what is so special about these new systems and what's really different from the competition because look, everyone offers some kind of integrated appliance. So I heard a number of items Dell talked about simplicity and efficiency and containers and Kubernetes. So I kind of kept pushing and got to what I think is the heart of the matter in two really important areas. One is simplicity. Dell claims that customers can deploy the system in half the time relative to the competition. So we're talking minutes to deploy and of course, that's going to lead to much simpler management. And the second real difference I heard, was backup and restore performance for VMware workloads. In particular, Dell has developed transparent snapshot capabilities to fundamentally change the way VMs are protected which leads to faster backup and restores with less impact on virtual infrastructure. Dell believes this new development is unique in the market, and claims that in its benchmarks, the new appliance was able to back up 500 virtual machines in 47% less time compared to a leading competitor. Now this is based on Dell benchmarks so hopefully these are things that you can explore in more detail with Dell to see if and how they apply to your business. My name is Savannah Peterson, joined here by my cohost David on the Cube, and our first guest today is a very exciting visionary. He's a leader at Dell. Please welcome Travis Vhi. Travis, thank you so much for being here. >>Thank you so much for having me. >>How you feeling? >>Okay. I I'm feeling like an exciting visionary. You >>Are. That's, that's the ideas why we tee you up for that. Great. So, so tell us, Dell had some huge announcements Yes. Last night. And you get to break it to the cube audience. Give us the rundown. >>Yeah. It's a really big show for Dell. We announced a brand new suite of GPU enabled servers, eight ways, four ways, direct liquid cooling. Really the first time in the history of the portfolio that we've had this much coverage across Intel amd, Invidia getting great reviews from the show floor. I had the chance earlier to be in the whisper suite to actually look at the gear. Customers are buzzing over it. That's one thing I love about this show is the gear is here. >>Yes, it is. It is a haven for hardware nerds. Yes. Like, like well, I'll include you in this group, it sounds like, on >>That. Great. Yes. Oh >>Yeah, absolutely. And I know David is as well, sew up >>The street. Oh, big, big time. Big time hardware nerd. And just to be clear, for the kids that will be watching these videos Yes. We're not talking about alien wear gaming systems. >>No. Right. >>So they're >>Yay big yay tall, 200 pounds. >>Give us a price point on one of these things. Re retail, suggested retail price. >>Oh, I'm >>More than 10 grand. >>Oh, yeah. Yeah. Try another order of magnitude. Yeah. >>Yeah. So this is, this is the most exciting stuff from an infrastructure perspective. Absolutely. You can imagine. Absolutely. But what is it driving? So talk, talk to us about where you see the world of high performance computing with your customers. What are they, what are they doing with this? What do they expect to do with this stuff in the future? >>Yeah. You know, it's, it's a real interesting time and, and I know that the provenance of this show is HPC focused, but what we're seeing and what we're hearing from our customers is that AI workloads and traditional HPC workloads are becoming almost indistinguishable. You need the right mix of compute, you need GPU acceleration, and you need the ability to take the vast quantities of data that are being generated and actually gather insight from them. And so if you look at what customers are trying to do with, you know, enterprise level ai, it's really, you know, how do I classify and categorize my data, but more, more importantly, how do I make sense of it? How do I derive insights from it? Yeah. And so at the end of the day, you know, you look, you look at what customers are trying to do. It's, it's take all the various streams of data, whether it be structured data, whether it be unstructured data, bring it together and make decisions, make business decisions. >>And it's a really exciting time because customers are saying, you know, the same things that, that, that, you know, research scientists and universities have been trying to do forever with hpc. I want to do it on industrial scale, but I want to do it in a way that's more open, more flexible, you know, I call it AI for the rest of us. And, and, and customers are here and they want those systems, but they want the ecosystem to support ease of deployment, ease of use, ease of scale. And that's what we're providing in addition to the systems. We, we provide, you know, Dell's one of the only providers on the on in the industry that can provide not only the, the compute, but the networking and the storage, and more importantly, the solutions that bring it all together. Give you one example. We, we have what we call a validated design for, for ai. And that validated design, we put together all of the pieces, provided the recipe for customers so that they can take what used to be two months to build and run a model. We provide that capability 18 times faster. So we're talking about hours versus months. So >>That's a lot. 18 times faster. I just wanna emphasize that 18 times faster, and we're talking about orders of magnitude and whatnot up here, that makes a huge difference in what people are able to do. Absolutely. >>Absolutely. And so, I mean, we've, you know, you've been doing this for a while. We've been talking about the, the deluge of data forever, but it's gotten to the point and it's, you know, the, the disparity of the data, the fact that much of it remains siloed. Customers are demanding that we provide solutions that allow them to bring that data together, process it, make decisions with it. So >>Where, where are we in the adoption cycle early because we, we've been talking about AI and ML for a while. Yeah. You, you mentioned, you know, kind of the leading edge of academia and supercomputing and HPC and what that, what that conjures up in people's minds. Do you have any numbers or, you know, any, any thoughts about where we are in this cycle? How many, how many people are actually doing this in production versus, versus experimenting at this point? Yeah, >>I think it's a, it's a reason. There's so much interest in what we're doing and so much demand for not only the systems, but the solutions that bring the systems together. The ecosystem that brings the, the, the systems together. We did a study recently and ask customers where they felt they were at in terms of deploying best practices for ai, you know, mass deployment of ai. Only 31% of customers said that they felt that they self-reported. 31% said they felt that they were deploying best practices for their AI deployments. So almost 70% self reporting saying we're not doing it right yet. Yeah. And, and, and another good stat is, is three quarters of customers have fewer than five AI applications deployed at scale in their, in their IT environments today. So, you know, I think we're on the, you know, if, if I, you think about it as a traditional S curve, I think we're at the first inflection point and customers are asking, Can I do it end to end? >>Can I do it with the best of breed in terms of systems? But Dell, can you also use an ecosystem that I know and understand? And I think that's, you know, another great example of something that Dell is doing is, is we have focused on ethernet as connectivity for many of the solutions that we put together. Again, you know, provenance of hpc InfiniBand, it's InfiniBand is a great connectivity option, but you know, there's a lot of care and feeding that goes along with InfiniBand and the fact that you can do it both with InfiniBand for those, you know, government class CU scale, government scale clusters or university scale clusters and more of our enterprise customers can do it with, with ethernet on premises. It's a great option. >>Yeah. You've got so many things going on. I got to actually check out the million dollar hardware that you have just casually Yeah. Sitting in your booth. I feel like, I feel like an event like this is probably one of the only times you can let something like that out. Yeah, yeah. And, and people would actually know what it is you're working >>With. We actually unveiled it. There was a sheet on it and we actually unveiled it last night. >>Did you get a lot of uz and os >>You know, you said this was a show for hardware nerds. It's been a long time since I've been at a shoe, a show where people cheer and u and a when you take the sheet off the hardware and, and, and Yes, yes, >>Yes, it has and reveal you had your >>Moment. Exactly, exactly. Our three new systems, >>Speaking of u and os, I love that. And I love that everyone was excited as we all are about it. What I wanna, It's nice to be home with our nerds. Speaking of, of applications and excitement, you get to see a lot of different customers across verticals. Is there a sector or space that has you personally most excited? >>Oh, personally most excited, you know, for, for credibility at home when, when the sector is media and entertainment and the movie is one that your, your children have actually seen, that one gives me credibility. Exciting. It's, you can talk to your friends about it at, at at dinner parties and things like that. I'm like, >>Stuff >>Curing cancer. Marvel movie at home cred goes to the Marvel movie. Yeah. But, but, but you know, what really excites me is the variety of applications that AI is being used, used in healthcare. You know, on a serious note, healthcare, genomics, a huge and growing application area that excites me. You know, doing, doing good in the world is something that's very important to Dell. You know, know sustainability is something that's very important to Dell. Yeah. So any application related to that is exciting to me. And then, you know, just pragmatically speaking, anything that helps our customers make better business decisions excites me. >>So we are, we are just at the beginning of what I refer to as this rolling thunder of cpu. Yes. Next generation releases. We re recently from AMD in the near future it'll be, it'll be Intel joining the party Yeah. Going back and forth, back and forth along with that gen five PCI e at the motherboard level. Yep. It's very easy to look at it and say, Wow, previous gen, Wow, double, double, double. It >>Is, double >>It is. However, most of your customers, I would guess a fair number of them might be not just N minus one, but n minus two looking at an upgrade. So for a lot of people, the upgrade season that's ahead of us is going to be not a doubling, but a four x or eight x in a lot of, in a lot of cases. Yeah. So the quantity of compute from these new systems is going to be a, it's gonna be a massive increase from where we've been in, in, in the recent past, like as in last, last Tuesday. So is there, you know, this is sort of a philosophical question. We talked a little earlier about this idea of the quantitative versus qualitative difference in computing horsepower. Do we feel like we're at a point where there's gonna be an inflection in terms of what AI can actually deliver? Yeah. Based on current technology just doing it more, better, faster, cheaper? Yeah. Or do we, or do we need this leap to quantum computing to, to get there? >>Yeah. I look, >>I think we're, and I was having some really interesting conversations with, with, with customers that whose job it is to run very, very large, very, very complex clusters. And we're talking a little bit about quantum computing. Interesting thing about quantum computing is, you know, I think we're or we're a ways off still. And in order to make quantum computing work, you still need to have classical computing surrounding Right. Number one. Number two, with, with the advances that we're, we're seeing generation on generation with this, you know, what, what has moved from a kind of a three year, you know, call it a two to three year upgrade cycle to, to something that because of all of the technology that's being deployed into the industry is almost more continuous upgrade cycle. I, I'm personally optimistic that we are on the, the cusp of a new level of infrastructure modernization. >>And it's not just the, the computing power, it's not just the increases in GPUs. It's not, you know, those things are important, but it's things like power consumption, right? One of the, the, the ways that customers can do better in terms of power consumption and sustainability is by modernizing infrastructure. Looking to your point, a lot of people are, are running n minus one, N minus two. The stuff that's coming out now is, is much more energy efficient. And so I think there's a lot of, a lot of vectors that we're seeing in, in the market, whether it be technology innovation, whether it be be a drive for energy efficiency, whether it be the rise of AI and ml, whether it be all of the new silicon that's coming in into the portfolio where customers are gonna have a continuous reason to upgrade. I mean, that's, that's my thought. What do you think? >>Yeah, no, I think, I think that the, the, the objective numbers that are gonna be rolling out Yeah. That are starting to roll out now and in the near future. That's why it's really an exciting time. Yeah. I think those numbers are gonna support your point. Yeah. Because people will look and they'll say, Wait a minute, it used to be a dollar, but now it's $2. That's more expensive. Yeah. But you're getting 10 times as much Yeah. For half of the amount of power boom. And it's, and it's >>Done. Exactly. It's, it's a >>Tco It's, it's no brainer. It's Oh yeah. You, it gets to the point where it's, you look at this rack of amazing stuff that you have a personal relationship with and you say, I can't afford to keep you plugged in anymore. Yeah. >>And Right. >>The power is such a huge component of this. Yeah. It's huge, huge. >>Our customer, I mean, it's always a huge issue, but our customers, especially in Amia with what's going on over there are, are saying, I, you know, I need to upgrade because I need to be more energy efficient. >>Yeah. >>Yeah. I I, we were talking about 20 years from now, so you've been at Dell over 18 years. >>Yeah. It'll be 19 in in May. >>Congratulations. Yeah. What, what commitment, so 19 years from now in your, in your second Dell career. Yeah. What are we gonna be able to say then that perhaps we can't say now? >>Oh my gosh. I, I look, I mean, there are are, you know, global issues that advances in computing power will help us solve. And, you know, the, the models that are being built, the ability to generate a, a digital copy of the analog world and be able to run models and simulations on it is, is amazing. Truly. Yeah. You know, I, I was looking at some, you know, it's very, it's a very simple and pragmatic thing, but I think it's, it, it's an example of, of what could be, we were with one of our technology providers and they, they were, were showing us a digital simulation, you know, a digital twin of a factory for a car manufacturer. And they were saying that, you know, it used to be you had to build the factory, you had to put the people in the factory. You had to, you know, run cars through the factory to figure out sort of how you optimize and you know, where everything's placed. >>Yeah. They don't have to do that anymore. No. Right. They can do it all via simulation, all via digital, you know, copy of, of analog reality. And so, I mean, I think the, you know, the, the, the, the possibilities are endless. And, you know, 19 years ago, I had no idea I'd be sitting here so excited about hardware, you know, here we are baby. I think 19 years from now, hardware still matters. Yeah. You know, hardware still matters. I know software eats the world, the hardware still matters. Gotta run something. Yeah. And, and we'll be talking about, you know, that same type of, of example, but at a broader and more global scale. You know, you said this was a show for hardware nerds. Our three new systems, that has you personally most excited? (upbeat music) >> Hi everyone, and welcome back to DTW 2021, theCUBE's continuous coverage of Dell Technologies World, the virtual edition. My name is Dave Vellante and I've been watching the ebb and flow and transformation of cloud strategies, from on-prem suppliers for a number of years. And it started with an aspiration to compete with their own public clouds. And over time, it became clear that customers wanted them to focus rather on their enduring foundational platforms, and evolve those, to bring cloud-like experiences, along with simplicity and agility and flexibility to the data center. And there's no more prominent example than VMware Cloud. We've shared the data with you all, as part of our Breaking Analysis, customers are leaning in, they're placing bets and the spending on these platforms is rising. And with me to talk about this, are two CUBE alums, Fidelma Russo, Senior Vice President and GM of Cloud Services unit at VMware, and Travis Vigil, who's the Senior Vice President Product Management, at Dell Technologies. Folks, welcome back to theCUBE. Great to see you again. >> Good to see you, Dave. >> Nice being here, Dave. >> So Fidelma, let's start with you. We've been seeing the rise of VMware Cloud and we see it in our ETR survey data, that VMware's Cloud offerings, as well as Dell's, Travis, have some of the highest momentum, within your respective company portfolios, when it comes to relative customer spend. So customers are voting with their wallets. Fidelma, what's the update? What do we need to know about VMware Cloud? >> So, as you saw Dave, we just did a big announcement at the end of March, on Yammer cloud being our multi-cloud platform. We truly believe that, this is what customers want. They want a consistent experience, not just on the public cloud, but also on-prem. And we're delivering that experience across a multitude of platforms. With that, our relationship with Dell Technologies goes very deep. We've seen a big uptake in the data center, where customers want a cloud operating model, that is just like being in the public cloud, but because of things like latency compliance, data sovereignty, you know, they're really those applications that need to remain on-prem, and that's where VMC on Dell EMC comes into play. >> Great, thank you Fidelma. Now Travis, we've had this scenario out there, where, we had to pivot of course, to remote work. And now, we're sort of forecasting, that, we're clearly, we're seeing spending coming back, but there's this sort of dual strategy, where people have to invest in hybrid, hybrid work meeting, and they also have to invest in the data center, because it's kind of been neglected over the last year. So, but the problem is that there's a staff shortage. There's a skills gap. And so people are sort of leaning more into managed services. They're definitely looking at OPEX models because it gives them more flexibility. So that's more important to organizations. What is VMware Cloud on Dell EMC and how does it address those needs? >> Yeah, Dave, I think you're spot on. And VMware Cloud on Dell EMC is a joint solution from VMware and Dell, to provide infrastructure as a service, delivered and deployed on-premises. And that on-premises could be a data center. It could be a colocation facility, it could be an edge location. And the great thing about it, as you pointed out, is that customers don't have to worry about managing the infrastructure, because it's managed for them. And, if you look at the offering overall, it has VMware Software-Defined Data Center stack, with compute, storage and networking coming from Dell, comes with flexible billing options. And, Fidelma talks a little bit about some of the workloads that are staying on-prem, whether that be for data sovereignty or compliance or performance or latency or any of the other issue, the other deciding factors that Fidelma mentioned, but the other great thing about this solution, and to your point, is that it helps customers, that are in this hybrid world, both develop and run both traditional and cloud-native applications on a single unified infrastructure. So we're seeing a, a ton of momentum, a ton of interest in this solution and solutions like it. >> I mean Fidelma, it's actually kind of scary. I mean, it's like the entire tech businesses now, just everything's growing. I mean, whether it's on-prem, laptops, new security solutions, you know, to crypto. I mean, it's just crazy right now, but the data center is on fire. You see the chip shortage, you see all kinds of investments going on, and organizations as you've pointed out, they want a hybrid solution. What are the workloads or use cases that are the best fit for on-premises and can benefit the most from this cloud service that you guys offer? Where are your customers finding success? >> So, where we found success, you know, and not surprisingly, regulated industries and industries where privacy and security are paramount. So let's talk a little bit about healthcare, and what we've seen on VMC on Dell EMC. There we've seen it deployed, on-prem, to provide online access to clinical records via VDI, and also access to analytics, from ALGA to clinicians, ALGA remote centers, where the clinicians work. So, that's one aspect. Another aspect is in energy, where we've seen deployments happen, and happen not just in the data center, but also out at the, what I would call the fat edge. And so, you know, so not unlike what you would think, as we move forward here. And, what I would say is, there is a thread that's common amongst customers, in areas where they have maybe a very mobile workforce, COVID I think has played into actually, not just accelerating to the public cloud, but also accelerating the need to have this remote operation of data center infrastructure on-prem. So, so as you said, both on fire, and we're seeing the uptake, especially within a regulated and compliant industry verticals. >> Great, thank you. So Travis, course we all saw the news couple of weeks ago and it was no surprise. Dell's spinning out VMware, and as part of that, there's a special commercial agreement associated with that spinout. But wonder if you could tell us, what is this joint offer, and how does it inform us about the future of VMware and Dell Technologies Fidelma mentioned? It's obviously a great channel, Dell that is, sells a lot of VMware technology. So, what should we, how should we think about this relationship going forward? And what's the next phase of this partnership going to look like? >> Yeah, I mean, I don't know an easier way to say it, than VMware is a key strategic partner for Dell, and this relationship enables us to deliver unmatched value to current and future customers on a continuous basis. And, if you look over the the last couple of years, the collaboration across Dell and VMware has never been stronger. We have shown our ability to partner very, very effectively on things like VxRail. And so, if you look at, what we're doing with VMware Cloud on Dell EMC, it's really about radically simplifying customer's IT experiences, so that they can focus on business outcomes. And we have teams here at Dell Technologies. We have teams at VMware, they're hard at work, at taking this offer and scaling it in the market. And we're also working at a, on a longer term integration of VMware Cloud on Dell EMC within Apex, which is really going to further simplify the experience for our joint customers. So, I mean, I think the easiest way to say it, is that we're both committed to delivering the best enterprise class infrastructure services to our joint customers, including hardware and software integrated together, and, I think this is just the start of many good things to come. >> Well, it makes sense. I mean, you guys have obviously developed muscle memory over the years, you know, it's like for years EMC prior, and obviously Dell, you kind of wanted to hang on and it was kind of tethered to VMware, but the time is right for that, for a lot of reasons. But I wonder Travis, how do you see, sort of VMware Cloud on Dell EMC, particularly you mentioned Apex. Is Apex, you have Apex hybrid cloud, that you've announced, the Dell Tech World and Apex private cloud. How does, how do you see that fitting in? >> Yeah, it's all part of a portfolio of solutions that we have for our customers. Dell Technologies, you've worked with, for us, for a long time Dave, and we always strive to provide the best solutions for our customers to match their needs. And so, if a customer determines that they will require a vendor managed cloud service, they want that single invoice billing, that completely managed solution for them, the best offering is obviously VMware Cloud on Dell EMC. If a customer determines that they have the IT resources to manage the infrastructure, they want the flexibility to and managed services later, Apex hybrid cloud or private cloud is the best solution. But the great news is that, all of these solutions showcase the partnership between Dell and VMware, as all of them have a major VMware component. Showcases our joint solutioning, and all of them are available today via Dell. And so, the only thing I can say is, there's more to come in the future. So stay tuned for exciting announcements in the not too distant future. >> Well, well Fidelma, the great thing about VMware and Dell, is you were in it, you got VMware. A lot of people, look back and say, wow, we could've had that for 635 million or whatever it was. (Fidelma laughing) And now it's just amazing to see how that the transformation has occurred. And I'll tell you how, how I see it. I mean, you've got this huge opportunity. You call it core to cloud to edge. I just see this abstraction layer that can be built out. And if I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, that the next 10 years of cloud aren't going to look like the last 10 years of cloud. So I'm wondering, but you have relationships with the public cloud players. You got a special relationship with AWS obviously, IBM, Microsoft, et cetera, et cetera. How do you see VMware Cloud on Dell EMC relative to the offerings that you have with other hyperscalers with the public cloud? >> So, we think it's a very important compliment. And so, you know I think, we've been around this industry long enough to know that, there's never one size fits all, and that, I think we're just coming into the next innings in cloud, as you said the next 10 years, won't be like the last 10 years. VMC on Dell EMC is the perfect compliment to other VMC offerings on top of the public cloud. And so, most customers end up with, they will have public cloud, for some applications native, they will have public cloud with VMware on it, and then they would have the need to have something either in their data center or at a colo. And for there, VMC on Dell EMC is the only heterogeneous one, that can operate with all of the VMware options on the public cloud. So, we think this is a really important play for us and our customers, and dovetails nicely into our portfolio. >> Yeah, we got a little bit of time left, I wonder if I'd get your opinion on this. I mean, I think that, obviously the public cloud is growing faster than the on-prem piece of it, but the on-prem piece is so much larger. So just a few percentage point growth in the on-prem, can mean so much more (Dave laughs) revenue and value. And I think people forget about that sometimes. I think the other thing is, I think for years, people misunderstood that, oh, it's like, it's not a zero-sum game, I guess is what I'm saying. And my point there is, if I'm you guys, I'm like, well thank you public cloud guys for spending tens of billions of dollars a year. It's like building the internet, thank you for that. Now we can build on top of it. And that's where I see the next 10 years, the real innovation that you guys can bring. The public cloud guys, yeah maybe they're going to try to dabble in that, but I, I'm not sure, I trust them to run my whole estate. If I'm a big Dell customer, I want to know, okay, what are you guys going to do for me in VMware? What are you going to do for me in terms of expanding? And that seems to be the direction that you're going, like Fidelma just said, it's early innings, that whole idea of abstracting all that underlying complexity away. It just seems to me, a huge opportunity for you and your customers. >> Yeah, we agree. I mean, even if you think about, you know, you made a very important point, it's not a zero-sum game, applications and workloads are growing. They're being driven by the development of modern applications on top of container technology. And so, with our transient technology from VMware, deployed across multiple cloud endpoints, we give you a lot of choice on where you want to develop those applications. You'll see us embedding it in many of our offerings including VMC on Dell EMC. And we're seeing a huge uptake on interest within the data centered customers and within, to start to develop modern applications on-prem. And so, as you said, it's not a zero-sum game and a few percentage points in uptake in data center will be good for everybody. Travis, you want to add? >> Yeah, I think that's right Fidelma. And I think the other thing is, Dell and VMware have been doing on-premises deployments for a long time. And, if you look at some of the core strengths that Dell has in terms of something, as critical as supply chain or services reach or the, what I call the ability to service tens of thousands of customers at moderate to large scale, that's something that, some of the alternative providers don't have. And so, the more, and Fidelma and I have talked about this a lot, the more that Dell and VMware can collaborate on these solutions, I think the stronger hand that we're going to have, going forward. >> Yeah, on-prem and complexity, frankly, that's your home court. Hild s VP of product management for Dell Technologies. Travis, nice to see you today. >>Hey, how's it going, Lisa? >>Not bad. Nice to connect a few, virtually. Of course, this year everything is so different. You've already done Virtual Cube. So welcome back our very socially distance program. 3rd 1 13 market. Alright. Eso back in May, you were on the Cube talking about the launch of power store. Really? What Dell Technologies was doing thio, um, kind of converged, Formerly overlapping technologies. My acquisitions compelling extreme io give us an update last few months of what's going on with power store customer adoption, mo mentum stuff like that. >>Yeah, you know, it's it's been, um, almost six months that we've launched the product and it's been a nun. Believable experience. Um, you know, let let me kind of break it up into a couple of different aspects. First of all, you know, we had Thio launch power store into a very different world than we had anticipated. Um, the global pandemic is obviously affecting everybody and everybody, you know, and everything around the world. You know, our first priority, Adele, is the health and safety of our customers of our team members of our partners. And, you know, it was a very interesting experience in that this technology is extremely important to many of our customers that are in essential businesses or businesses that are impacted by what's going on in the world. So even though there's this broad, um, you know, backdrop against which we had tow launch the product, we're still seeing fantastic adoption and fantastic mo mentum. Since launch, we've shipped worldwide over 40. We've we've shipped into over 40 different countries already. Um, but, you know, I think to really talk about mo mentum and what's going on, it's it's better to talk about specific customers and what they're doing and what they're finding advantageous about the product. Um, start maybe with a health care example. Healthcare provider in North America chose to adopt power stories, a multimillion dollar deal and what they were trying to do Waas modernize their data centers. They had many heritage storage devices in their data centers. Um, there was a lot of technical debt and they wanted toe modernize things, make things more autonomous and at the same time consolidate multiple different data centers into, uh, you know, still, they had data centers across across the country and across the world, but they were consolidating into fewer sites and with power store because of the efficiency because of the D duplication capability, because of the performance of the array, they were actually able to reduce the annual optics they had related to storage expenditures by $3 million per year. By going to PowerMax. I'm sorry by going to PowerStore, Um, so that that was a big one. Another, another good example was in a me, a high tech customer. They adopted power store because of power stores, ability to scale performance and capacity independently and in the business that they're in, they have two things that they're trying to balance. One is kind of a spiky performance requirement across their different applications. And the other is, uh, kind of ah, variable. And you know and uncertain growth of data. So the ability to scale performance when they need it and capacity when they need it allowed us to win this this nearly million dollar deal with them and then and then one other one that that's one of my favorites. Uh um entertainment company in the A P J region. Obviously, with with all of us staying home, I can speak for my my kids that air, you know, remote learning right over my shoulder. There is a lot more video games going on, and so this particular provider was able to do three things by installing power store. First, they were able to decrease their backup window from, uh, multiple weeks to a half a day because of the performance of the array. And the other thing they were able to do was to increase video game development efficiency by 25% and decrease cost a storage by 25%. So faster backups, more efficient game development and decreased cost. So those were just a couple of the examples that we have for power store. We were seeing great adoption, great traction and really, uh, customers and partners are are really excited about what we brought to market. >>He talked about, you know, some of the things that are essential that even back in May, when power Start was launched, no one would have thought here in October 2020. We'd still be in such a state of massive remote workforce businesses that we wouldn't have thought like a gaming company in a p j being essential as really being essential. Talk to me about the speed of adoption. For example, the health care organization that you talked about North America. How quickly were you able to enable that organization Thio upgrade or migrate to power store so that they could achieve not only those business objectives or outcomes that you talked about but do so in a way where only essential folks needed to be on site if it was on Prem? Because, of course, all the challenges there, right? >>Yeah, you know it, za Really good question on. We have to Do you know, this was a brand new product for us And in order to enable proof of concepts in order in order to enable our partners to be able to demonstrate the product is taken an enormous amount of coordination, an enormous amount of doing things remotely. And so you know, it's actually taken a little bit more time than, you know, had we've been ableto fly people around the world to do it. But we've gotten very proficient at organizing, with the customer being ableto host. The demonstrations or the proof of concepts remotely be able to do our. You know, our customer briefing is remotely eso. It is a new world and a new way of doing it, but we're doing it very effectively. >>So Power Start was big. In the beginning, there was like 1000 engineers working on this. This was the largest beta launch in Dell's history, the >>largest launch that we never did that we've ever done, >>launching it during a pandemic, unpredictable, and you're seeing tremendous momentum. So walk me through when you're talking to customers. What are some of the key differentiators that really make power store unique? >>Yeah, you know, I like to start at at the architecture of the product when I'm talking to a customer about power store because, um, with storage products, the architecture er is the thing that all future features and capabilities air built on. And so when you look at the core architecture of power store, it was a ground up design, a clean sheet design optimized for the way the world is today in the way the world is going to be. And so it was optimized for the latest and greatest in terms of media, whether that the NBN me or NBN me or ECM it was micro services based so that, you know, it's much more modular in the way that we can develop. And, uh, it was built from the ground up with things like performance and efficiency in mind. You know, when we first launched this this array and this this fact is true. Today we were bringing a product to market because of the fact that we had built it and optimized it at its core for the way the world is today. That was seven times more performance and three times more responsive than any previous mid range array that we had brought to market. So that that core performance is kind of point number one point number two Data reduction data reduction is the new normal. And with power store, we have a guaranteed Fourtou one data reduction. We've actually had a partner that did a test across a broad array of of midrange storage devices. That and in their particular environment, they saw 4.6 to 1 data reduction. And the closest competitive array that they had in their environment was getting less than 4 to 1. So being, you know, very competitive industry leading in data reduction is another key capability. And then if you go back to the core architecture, er and I talked about it in the in the high tech company that I mentioned the European high tech company, the ability to scale, performance and capacity independently in our scale. Out design is another differentiator. Um, for folks that have been around storage arrays a long time traditional storage array. You know, you you would add capacity sometimes when you need it performance or you that performance. Sometimes when you need to capacity by being ableto separate. Those two things customers can really get optimized in their environment for what they're trying toe. What their needs are. They need more performance, they can have more performance, they need more capacity, they can add more capacity. So I put those three things in the core architectural, um, differentiation that's resonating with customers and partners and then above and beyond that we brought some industry Onley capability to market. Um, in that we are the Onley purpose built storage appliance with a built in vm ware s X i hyper visor. So what this allows customers to do is run bm where based applications on the same hardware as they're hosting for storage. That's being fed to clients in the more traditional model. And this enables the whole new host of use cases where customers can, um, changed the way that they're optimized in the core. And also, there's a lot of good edge, uh, deployments that this that this new capability can help enable. So it z, you know, being architecturally advanced in performance efficiency and scale up and scale out and bringing industry Onley capabilities in our integration, especially with VM, where to market that have really resonated with our customers. >>How about some of those new use cases that the VM ware integration is enabling, especially in today's climate, with massively that scattered workforce that you know, some big execs predict 50% of the workforce is going to stay remote. We've got the edge expanding with device proliferation. What >>are some >>of the new use cases That that what Power Mac power store can deliver, uniquely as you said is gonna be able to drive and help many businesses thrive? >>Yeah, you know, I think that there there's a change in the way that you can do things in the core. But I think the new, uh, you know, either remote, uh, site or kind of the distributed edge benefits from the ability to do more with less less. And so if you can have hardware that is ableto, you know, provide some compute capability and a lot of storage capability. Those applications and use cases that are migrating to the edge or to a remote site can be enabled with a single device which leads toe, you know, easier manageability, lower total cost of ownership than having toe deploy multiple multiple devices. >>So you're great with the stats you show you you articulated the value that Dell Technologies set out to establish with power store all the testing, what you're seeing actually, in customer, uh, environments, which is fantastic when you're talking with analysts looking at what Dell Technologies has done when it's in to develop our store. And like I said, you know, merging technologies from compelling and extreme Iot, uh, etcetera, our analysts looking at this is maybe a benchmark in terms of what storage array companies should be doing. >>Uh, yeah. You know, there was was some press that was written when we announced that that that the release of Power Store established a new benchmark of what was expected from a million very storage array, which is, you know, it was something that that was really fulfilling, especially all after all of the work and all of that engineering that we talked about that that and the innovation that we have put into it over the course of a multi multi year journey. And so you know what? We're what we're seeing, you know, whether it be from partners, whether it be from analysts, whether it be from customers, is people really understanding that we have, um, taken a huge step forward in simplifying our portfolio, that we're able to direct our R and D investments into a single platform to bring mawr and more capability to that platform over time, and that message is resonating very strongly. >>So wrapping things up here, Power Store is in its first five or six months. And during that time, you know, crazy things have happened in the world were in a state still disarray, if you will, no pun intended what is next for the second half of power stores? First year. How is Dele? Technology is going to enable businesses to really continue to get past that survival mode right now into thriving so that they could be the winners of tomorrow. >>Yeah. You know, I think the second half of this year, the first half of this year was was all about getting the product out into market, getting people educated on it, getting partners, trained up on it, getting those key early wins, you know, established establishing that thought leadership on what we're doing with the with the overall storage portfolio. The second half of this year is really about adoption and getting it into the hands of mawr customers. Getting into that that, you know, enabling our partners to, you know, amplify our message into the market. And so I think you're gonna You're gonna see a continual drumbeat from us in terms of mawr adoption mawr mo mentum and mawr success on power store. Uh, and for me, that is the foundation going back to the architecture er comment I made earlier of good things to come in the future. The architecture, er is so flexible and is built for the future. And so when new things come when new media comes when new, uh, you know, interfaces or interconnect technologies come when we, uh, you know, invest in even tighter integration with VM where, like at VM World? Just a couple of weeks ago, we announced that we're partnering with VM Ware on a new interconnect technology nbn me over TCP that core architectures so flexible that it can adopt, you know, with software upgrades to the way the world is going to be in the future. And so for me, it was getting it out into the market, getting it adopted, adopted and then continuing to provide new features and new capabilities as the market of alls. >>And as our evolution is sort of unclear, the flexibility that you talked about the simplification are needed everywhere. I'll take those as well, Travis. Thank you. So much for sharing with us. The moments, um, for the first half of power stores, first year and what we can look to see. I'm Lisa Martin, welcoming back to theCUBE one of our distinguished alumni, Travis Vigil, the SVP of Product Management for Dell Technologies. Travis, nice to see you today. >> Hey, how's it going Lisa? >> Not bad, nice to connect with you virtually, of course this year, everything is so different. You've already done virtual CUBEs. So welcome back to our very-- >> Yeah, this is my third one. >> Socially distance program. Third one? Third time lucky. >> Yeah. >> All right, so back in May, you were on theCUBE talking about the launch of PowerStore. Really what Dell Technologies was doing to kind of converge formerly overlapping technologies by Acquisitions, Compellent, XtremeIO, give us an update last few months of what's going on with PowerStore, customer adoption, momentum, stuff like that. >> Yeah, it's been almost six months that we've launched the product, and it's been an unbelievable experience. Let me kind of break it up into a couple of different aspects. First of all, we had to launch PowerStore into a very different world than we had anticipated. The global pandemic is obviously affecting everybody and everything around the world. Our first priority at Dell is the health and safety of our customers, of our team members, of our partners. And it was a very interesting experience in that, this technology is extremely important to many of our customers that are in essential businesses or businesses that are impacted by what's going on in the world. So even though there's this broad backdrop against which we had to launch the product, we're still seeing fantastic adoption and fantastic momentum. Since launch, we've shipped world wide over 40, we've shipped into over 40 different countries already. And we have the biggest pipeline that we've ever generated for our product in the history of Dell and EMC at this point in its life. But, I think to really talk about momentum and what's going on, it's better to talk about specific customers and what they're doing and what they're finding advantageous about the product. Start maybe with a healthcare example, a healthcare provider in North America chose to adopt PowerStore as a multimillion dollar deal. And what they were trying to do was modernize their data centers. They had many heritage storage devices in their data centers. There was a lot of technical debt and they wanted to modernize things, make things more autonomous. And at the same time consolidate multiple different data centers into most... Still they had data centers across the country and across the world, but they were consolidating into fewer sites. And with PowerStore because of the efficiency, because of the deduplication capability, because of the performance of the array, they were actually able to reduce the annual Opex they have related to storage expenditures by $3 million per year by going to PowerMax, I'm sorry, by going to PowerStore. So that was a big one. Another good example was an AMEA high-tech customer. They adopted PowerStore because of PowerStore's ability to scale performance and capacity independently. And in the business that they're in, they have two things that they're trying to balance. One is kind of a spiky performance requirement across their different applications, and the other is kind of a variable and uncertain growth of data. So the ability to scale performance when they need it and capacity when they need it allowed us to win this nearly million dollar deal with them. And then other one that's one of my favorites, an entertainment company in the APJ region, obviously with all of us staying home, I can speak for my kids that are remote learning right over my shoulder. There's a lot more video games going on. And so this particular provider was able to do three things by installing PowerStore. First, they were able to decrease their backup window from multiple weeks to a half a day because of the performance of the array. And the other thing they were able to do was to increase video game development efficiency by 25% and decreased costs of storage by 25%. So faster backups, more efficient game development, and decreased costs. So those are just a couple of the examples that we have for PowerStore. We're seeing great adoption, great traction, and really, customers and partners are really excited about what we've brought to market. >> You talked about some of the things that are essential, that even back in May when PowerStore was launched, no one would have thought here in October, 2020, we'd still be in such a state of massive remote workforce, businesses that we wouldn't have thought like a gaming company, and APJ being essential, as really being essential. Talk to me about the speed of adoption, for example, the healthcare organization that you talked about in North America. How quickly were you able to enable that organization to upgrade or migrate to PowerStore so that they could achieve not only those business objectives or outcomes that you talked about, but do so in a way where only essential folks needed to be on site, if it was on-prem, 'cause of course it was all the challenges there, right? >> Yeah, it's a really good question. This was a brand new product for us. And in order to enable proof of concept, in order to enable our partners to be able to demonstrate the product, it's taken an enormous amount of coordination and enormous amount of doing things remotely. And so, it's actually taken a little bit more time than had we been able to fly people around the world to do it, but we've gotten very proficient at organizing with the customer, being able to host the demonstrations or the proof of concepts remotely, be able to do our customer briefings remotely. So it is a new world and a new way of doing it, but we're doing it very effectively. >> So PowerStore was big from the beginning. There was like 1000 engineers working on this. This was the largest beta launch in Dell's history. >> The largest beta that we'd ever done, yes. >> Launching it during a pandemic that was unpredictable and you're seeing tremendous momentum. So walk me through, when you're talking to customers, what are some of the key differentiators that really make PowerStore unique? >> Yeah, I like to start at the architecture of the product when I'm talking to a customer about PowerStore, because with storage products, the architecture is the thing that all features and capabilities are built on. And so when you look at the core architecture of PowerStore, was a ground up design, a clean sheet design optimized for the way the world is today and the way the world is going to be. And then above and beyond that, we brought some industry only capability to market in that we are the only purpose built storage appliance with a built in VMware, ESXi hypervisor. So what this allows customers to do is, run VMware based applications on the same hardware as they're hosting for storage that's being fed to clients in the more traditional model. And this enables a whole new host of use cases where customers can change the way that they're optimized in the core. And also there's a lot of good edge deployments that this new capability can help enable. And so when new things come, when new media comes, when new interfaces or interconnect technologies come, when we invest in even tighter integration with VMware, like at VMworld just a couple of weeks ago, we announced that we're partnering with VMware on a new interconnect technology and NVMe-over-TCP. That core architecture is so flexible that it can adopt with software upgrades to the way the world is going to be in the future. And so for me, it was getting it out into the market, getting it adopted, and then continuing to provide new features and new capabilities as the market evolves. >> And as our evolution is sort of unclear, the flexibility that you talked about, the simplification are needed everywhere. I'll take those as well. Here we are in 2020 of course, rather than being together at the moscone or at the sand. We're coming to you in your place of work or home when you're watching video, happy to welcome back. We have two of our long time guests on the program. First we have Travis Vigil. He is the Senior Vice President of Product Management with Dell Technologies and joining him is Lee Caswell who's the Vice President of Product Storage and Availability Business unit at VMware, Lee and Travis, thanks so much for joining us. >> Thank you Steve, it's good to see you again. >> All right, so we love kind of the maturation of what's happened. I mentioned 11 years, I get to usually sit down and talk with both of you, we talk about strategy we talk about how customers, and at the end of the day, we know things are changing. Like 2020 things are changing more every day, but one of the big transitions here is talking about that, how applications are changing. In the old days it was hey, I have an application, let me just stick it in a VM and it's going to be good there forever. We know that today I need to be able to react fast, I need to move things forward. And that impacts what VMware and Dell are doing together. So hey Lee, if maybe we come with you give the VMware perspective on that application changing and what that means to there and Travis feel free to chime in when Lee's done. >> Sure. >> Yeah thanks so much Steve and great to have to be back here on theCube. And VMworld is always a great opportunity to talk about how the industry is changing. What's really happening here and so one of the things that we're all finding is that the pace of application change is speeding up. And you know what, I mean you think about infrastructure. We want to think about how you can organize around the fastest changing element. This is one of the things we kicked off with project Pacific and our Tanzu portfolio a year ago. And you're starting to see all the products come roaring through right now as we're integrating Kubernetes. So that container based applications can be managed, secured, protected, just the same way with all the same tools that we have with our traditional VM applications. >> Yeah it's an excellent point. I mean, we are seeing the adoption of the modern applications in VMware environments, just accelerate beyond belief. And we're getting increasing requests from our customers to protect, to manage production workloads in Kubernetes environments and with our power protect data manager. Yeah we're actually announcing that we have all support for the Tanzu portfolio. So that includes TKG TKGI, Kubernetes Clusters, Kubernetes Clusters, and vSphere. So we're really excited to be able to offer this capability to our joint customers. And I think one thing that we're seeing is that the roles in IT are oftentimes blending together. So one of the things we're excited about with our solution is that with our direct data protection integration and vSphere environments. It's actually the be admin that can provision, monitor, manage, and protect the Kubernetes workloads, give unified experience and provide that peace of mind in this next generation world. >> Yeah Travis I'm glad you brought up some of those changing roles. I mean, that was such a big theme for so many years as the Virtualization Admin taking on more responsibility. And Lee teed up the changing application, you've got other roles coming together. You've got the application development team, which often times is disconnected from the infrastructure team. So, from either of you just what are you seeing from your customers? How are they sorting through that? I need to move agile, I need to move faster and that's not traditionally how the infrastructure team has worked. >> Things that we've been working on for example is how we've integrated SRM with vVols and PowerMax. And when you think about that, and we've talked for years right about the vVols for example. What we're responding to now is that customers are coming back and saying, listen, I have HCI, but I also have storage system and I need your help to go and be able to manage these with a consistent operating model and the same team. And that career path for the Virtualization Administrator just continues to grow. They're adding now five native applications, Kubernetes Orchestrated Applications, and being able to manage those across traditional storage and newer HCI systems. This is a really interesting blend of where the companies are working together to make sure that customer responses are being addressed really quickly. >> Yeah, it's a great example Lee. I mean, if you think about Three-tier architecture and PowerMax being the flagship of the heart of a lot of data centers that have been in operation for decades, the fact that we're seeing from our customers, hey, can you take a SRM and vVols, Can you integrate it with PowerMax and SRDF and be able to provide me a step along the way on my modernization journey? Such that I can utilize what I've built up my IT operations about around over the last couple of decades along with the newer deployment models like Hyper-converged infrastructure. And we're seeing that kind of that step forward and a blurring of the lines in terms of roles all over the place. I think another good example Lee is Cloud Native App Dev, right? And customers looking object, S3 object storage capability to provide a simple dev apps friendly way of, developing applications and hybrid cloud environments. And that's why we're really happy that we're able to provide early access for what we refer to as object scale, which works in conjunction with the vSAN Data persistence Platform to allow our customers to deliver modern applications. But at the same time use infrastructure that the IT organization is deploying, for other standard applications. I think that's another good example. >> It's a good point we had blocks through VSand of course right? And added files, what was missing well objects. (laughing) And so... >> Exactly >> We're already together with this persistent storage platform. We've got a way to go on basically supply object scale, object scale storage that can be used for Cloud Native Development. And I think this is a good example, right? This isn't just one hand clapping, right? This is both companies working together to make sure that customers have a seamless experience. That's really important. It doesn't come for granted, right? I mean it really takes co-engineering, joint testing and developing and go-to market together between our companies. I've never seen it working better. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. Go ahead Stuart. >> I know Travis I was just saying, we saw how fast VMware went from announcing project Pacific to the GA of the base solution where you needed the cloud foundation to update one already allowing everything to move open. That's going to be a little bit challenging to keep up with that pace of innovation. We've been talking for years on the queue, but we went from the 18 month release cycle to now, most things are like a six week release cycle. So, give us through any other pieces that were portfolio we need to understand the fitting with Tanzu and yeah. How do you move things along and where are the customers with their adoption? Are they sitting there waiting for it, or is this something that is going to be a more traditional enterprise slow roll? >> No I think you hit it spot on Stu the adoption and the deployments of these new architectures are coming very, very quickly, right? Traditional IT is trying to and in many cases successfully moving to a more cloud-like delivery CI/CD approach to how they run their shops and the speed of innovation and the speed and the dynamics of new technologies within the data centers are just, accelerating at a really fast pace. And in order to continue to keep up with these changes, it's I'll reflect back on a little bit on what Lee was talking about. It's understanding where customers are going and jointly working together to target those pain points. And I'll give a very specific example. And then I think maybe Lee, we should start to talk a little bit about Monterey as well, but I'll say a very specific example on joint innovation is, as customers have deployed VMware more broadly and they put more mission, critical large applications on VM, there's been sort of this persistent issue that some of those VMs just were so large or required such high availability, that they were what some IT professionals would refer to as unprotectable. And so we're actually demonstrating with VMware innovation that allows those VMs, those large mission critical Vms that can take zero downtime or even a pause in availability or performance, the ability to take backups without impacting the performance on those VMs. So, that's a very specific thing we're doing, a very specific pin point, but I think it's an example of us working together to target customer customer needs. And then I think more broadly, there's a big trend in composability that part talked a little bit about this morning Project Monterey I'll let Lee kick it off and then kind of talk a little bit about what we're doing to partner with VMware on this initiative. >> Yeah, well great. I definitely want to hear Monterey obviously, edge computing has everybody excited. Travis we've been hearing from the Dell team the last couple of years is that strategy's muttering some of the investment pieces that Dell's doing. So Lee, we hear edge computing. What does that mean? VMware has got a strong telco play that we've watched, for many years. So, just as you said Project Pacific rolled out pretty fast, help us understand a bit more of this Monterey and how fast will this turn into that cascade of products that you talked about for that we sell the last year. >> Yeah thanks, and it's exciting at VMware, right? We're willing to go and share a projects. Overtime project to become products, it's the way it works. And so the project is really a directional vision that says, if you think about what we did with Project Pacific a year ago, and Pacific being like going broad. The idea was applications are changing, we needed to go and basically make Kubernetes integrated with these sphere, with our full VMware Cloud Foundation, and then basically simplify it for customer consumption, and we did that together with the Tanzu brand. Now, Project Monterey, if you think of the Monterey Canyon is now going deep. And what it says is that not only the software architecture has to change, but also hardware, new hardware capabilities, particularly through the use of Smart NICs are a new way for us to think about re-architecting, how compute is basically optimized within a server and then across clusters and even across the hybrid cloud. And so Monterey will be a new way to look at how we go in efficiently offload CPUs and use these new Smart NIC offload engines as a way to think about where hypervisors run, where let's call it software defined, whether it's storage or compute. And most importantly and probably is security. 'Cause one of the things we're finding that applications new applications are demanding is encryption for example or distributed firewalls thinking about like how do we do that secure boot or how do we think about air gapping applications from the infrastructure? And so we're really thinking about how to re-architect the world of security. So the security is integrally distributed throughout an architecture. And so you'll be seeing with Project Monterey our ability to go and drive new products out of that and we're working very closely on an engineering to engineering level with Dell Technologies to make sure this new technology becomes available for customers and fully integrated in the VMware Cloud Foundation. So we have an easy way for customers to digest it which I think that's the thing Stuart right now is there's a lot of new technologies coming so fast, really their partnership means that we're able to consume those more quick. >> Wonderful, yeah Monterey so we're going to go deeper than the grand canyon is deep, but I guess we need to all a breathe under water too. So Travis, as I mentioned, Dell's had for a couple of years, some of these analysts sessions that I've had the opportunity to go through, been watching out that growth of the edge strategy, obviously Dell has everything from some of the hardened pieces on the consumer side, through tying into broad ecosystems. So the software obviously is going to be a huge component of what edges we saw in the keynote stage and video, a big partnership they're obviously a huge important partner for both Dell and VMware. So Travis, from the Dell side, what does this vision of Monterey mean? >> It's extremely important, I'd say transformational potentially for IT going forward and Lee did a really good job of describing the trends, whether that be cloud native Telco 5G, machine learning and data-centric applications, multicloud, and hybrid cloud and that security concern that Lee was talking about. Those are our real trends, and if we can offer infrastructure that is more composable into these dis-aggregated resources, across the edge, across the cloud, across the core, all software defined and seamlessly managed. I mean, that's a powerful vision. And we're just really excited to be partnering with VMware, jointly engineering this future focusing first on those Smartnecks that Lee was talking about because you need that higher compute, you need that increased bandwidth. You need easier manageability of a distributed infrastructure, and you need that ability to provide easier and more distributed security. So lots more to come, we will be incorporating these technologies specifically in the form of Smartnecks into our HCI and our server portfolio. But this like Lee said, this is a trend that will move from initiative to project to products very quickly. >> Wonderful, well we covered that breadth in that depth as you said Lee. Want to give you both just final takeaways, what you want people to take from Vmworld 2020 Lee we'll start with you and then Travis you get the final word. >> Yeah, we're really looking at a changing world in terms of applications. And so for customers around the globe, look for the partnerships that will bring those new capabilities and make it easy to go and deploy as fast as possible. We started off making sure that people weren't looking down at the infrastructure and started looking up at the apps. We're continuing that process with what we're doing around Tanzu, around our Kubernetes portfolio and stay tuned there'll be more to come, much more as we work together on Project Monterey, lots of exciting news and glad that you were here from VMworld to go and see it all of the light. >> Yeah, I think I obviously agree with everything that Lee just said. I think for me the this VMworld is just, another step forward in a great partnership across Dell technologies and VMware. And I mentioned several things, all of the things that we're doing together I forgot to mention actually that we're the first company to be, to offer a certified solution to protect VMworld Cloud Foundations which I use that specific example again expect more first, expect more joint in engineering and integrations. And I think the power of these two organizations coming together is what's going to be needed to help drive forward into this next generation of modern applications and dynamic workloads and dis-aggregated resources. And so we're just really excited about the innovation, the ability to address customer issues and the strong partnership that we have across Dell technologies and VMworld. >> Well, one of the measurements six that we have today is how fast everyone can respond and move fast. Congratulations on all the progress you've both made in your teams in the last year. And absolutely look forward to hearing more about Project Monterey as that matures. He is the Senior Vice President of Product Management for storage and data protection at Dell Technologies. Travis, nice to see you. >> it's great to see you Stu, as always. >> Alright, so Travis, while we aren't at Dell tech world, you know that this May 2020 that's going to be handled in the fall. There are a lot of things happening in the storage world. your team's announced power store just a couple of weeks ago. >> Yeah. >> And you know many other things happening in the storage world and we're going to get to dig into it. So I guess let's start there. With the new mid range solution. I had a great conversation with Caitlin Gordon, what's the initial feedback you've been getting from the field? You know, and from customers of course. >> You know Stu, it's been a whirlwind of a couple of weeks with the public unveiling of power store. This was a major release for us you know simply put, I've referred to it as probably the most important and strategic launch that we've had at Dell since the combination of Dell and EMC. I personally have been involved with the program for a little over two years. And we have had significant investment in bringing this product to fruition over 1000 engineers across Dell Technologies, including engineers at VMware. Put in tireless time, hours, innovation into bringing this product to market and we're extremely excited about it. The press has been very positive on the launch on the capabilities, but more importantly, customers and partners have been extremely positive on The launch and the capabilities. Stu we've been talking for multiple years now about the fact that we are going to be simplifying our product line, especially in the mid range. And the release of power store is a major milestone in that simplification. And, you know, I can go into speeds and feeds and what differentiates it. But to me, the biggest part of this announcement is that we have a product in the market that is resonating with the field resonating with customers, resonating with partners. And, you know feedback from the largest beta program that we've done as a part of a mid range storage launch ever gave us early indications that things would be you know the feedback would come back this way. And we're very happy with the initial traction that we're receiving. >> Well Travis you know definitely a lot of work, you said over 1000 engineers working on that. >> Yeah, yeah. >> It's interesting you think back to the storage world, you know for a long time, it was you know growth of product line through acquisitions. Of course, Dell made a couple of acquisitions you're quite familiar with over the years, EMC over the years made many acquisitions, and tell me what does it mean for 1000 engineers to work on something, you know often you'll hear, you know oh well you know a startup of 50 people, they built some new thing, and you know that you know rocketed them to the next thing, and you know by the time they get to 1000 people oftentimes, you know they're talking about have they been acquired or, you know are they going public? So you know, why is that investment needed? And you know what's the outcome of that kind of, you know starting from the ground up solution? >> Yeah, it's a good question Stu. When I think about it, what we set out to do with power store was, is something very ambitious, which is to simplify the product lines. To bring the best capabilities of the current shipping mid range products into a next generation architecture. And when we looked at doing that, we quickly determined that in order to be flexible, and to be able to innovate quickly to be able to provide the features and capabilities needed to bring all of those customers forward, we had to make significant investment. And, you know, I don't know of another example to your point of a company having done this internally. Especially with a heritage of acquisition and so getting to build something from the ground up that is optimized and modern for the workloads of today, but also able to bring customers from previous or current generation products forward, is something that's been really special. And something that I think, you know that that Dell will be able to continue to innovate and lead the market in mid range from the investment that we made for the for, you know well into the future. >> Alright, so Travis, one of the other discussions we've been having with the Dell team quite a bit over the last couple of years is how storage fits into the whole discussion of cloud. So there's some recent announcements, you've got recent products. How is Dell thinking about you know, that world of storage, and how that integrates into a customer's overall cloud discussion? >> Yeah, if I think about cloud, I think about a couple things. One, there's sort of the cloud operating model, which is, you know things need to be really simple. things need to be autonomous. There's this concept of being able to provide private cloud functionality on prem. And so, you know when I look at some of the capabilities that we've built into power store, for example, it's delivering that cloud light, simple to use simple to scale experience, but on prem. Then I think the other aspect of cloud, which is just as important is, you know how do on prem products integrate with leverage, and really allow the capabilities that they provide to be used both on prem in a hybrid cloud environment or you know directly as part of a service in a public cloud. And we have seen that customers that are looking at us, customers that are in specific industries or looking at specific workloads are really looking for that flexibility, that burst capability, if you will, to be ever able to leverage certain capabilities across on prem and in the cloud. And specifically, we've seen that demand with customers that utilize our Isilon products our OneFS products, those customers, some of them are corporate using them for kind of traditional file workloads, you know, enterprise file workloads, but there's a big chunk of customers that are in specific verticals like life sciences, like genomic sequencing, media and entertainment, things like collaborative video editing, or in wanting to the ability to burst to the cloud for video rendering. Use Cases like autonomous driving Where the massive scalability that we have in OneFS. For those customers that are using it in an on prem solution, they want to be able to also utilize it in a public cloud as a public cloud capability. And so part of what we're announcing is the ability to utilize OneFS as a native capability in Google Cloud. And lots of interest from customers of the type that I just just spoke about, to be able to leverage that capability. And it's really like, the capabilities we're bringing are like nothing else on the market, you know. I'm not exaggerating to say that the scalability, the performance, the capacity, are orders of magnitude better than what competitors can provide with their cloud capabilities. >> Yeah, well, Travis absolutely, If Think about the word scale, you know, Google's one of the first companies that comes to mind, >> Right, right. >> Who else has the global reach and the networking capability. It's been interesting to watch, Dell has partnerships and the Dell family has partnerships with, you know a lot of the you know, pretty much all the cloud providers at this point. So, you know what's special about, the Google solution, you said, unparalleled there you know bring us underneath the covers a little bit, and help us understand what really differentiates the OneFS solution that you're doing with Google Cloud? >> Yeah, so I'll take it back to the workload, the life sciences, media entertainment, autonomous driving, they need massively scalable file solutions from a performance perspective and a capacity perspective. And the solution that we've engineered, co-engineered with Google Cloud provides massive scalability and massive capacity. In particular, versus one of our closest competitors, it's 46 times higher in terms of read throughput, 96 times higher in terms of write throughput, put in 500 times higher in terms of maximum file system capacity. And these workloads require it. I mean, these are massive file based repositories. And it's not just the capacity, but it's the performance of that capacity that is extremely important. So much like the value we bring on prem with OneFS, we're bringing that value to the cloud to Google. And because you have, you know you're utilizing common OneFS, whether you're on prem or in the cloud, you have native replication capabilities available for customers that want to do that bursting. >> Yeah, it's been fascinating, Travis you know, my background's a little bit more on the block side of the house than the file side of the house. >> Yeah. >> But, you know from, mid range storage, where we kind of you know, put block and file together to get unified, then you saw the huge explosion of the scale out NAS type solutions. And then one of the things you know the whole industry looked at is you know, what's that gap between object, which is what you know is typically underlying the cloud storage and file. So many of these solutions you know, are really blurring those lines pulling these things together. So that I mean, ultimately you know, customers don't need to think about you know, some of those underlying you know, storage networking architectures, >> That's right. >> They could just solve their problems So, >> Yeah, I think you're exactly right. And, you know I actually come from a mid range background as well. And, you know I've been associated with OneFS, and Isilon for a couple years now and the amazing thing to me is the growth of data, right? You know, this stat better than I do Stu, which is 80% of all the data generated in the next decade will be unstructured. And so that's not to say that you know traditional storage arrays aren't going to continue to grow. Those workloads are growing as well. But the massive growth and the reason that there is such a desire to do things in or close to the clouds for file based workloads comes from that underlying growth. >> Yeah, so Travis, I guess one of the other things that's interesting to look at is with the global pandemic going on you know, automation is front and center for customers you know, I can't go touch my gear. So therefore you know I need to limit how often I would need to do that. So, you know how does that just overall usability, you know, autonomous nature of these types of solutions fit into everything we've been talking about. >> Yeah It's I mean, it's core to solutions going further forward, whether you're talking about the OneFS Google solution, or whether you're talking about power store, more and more customers need to be focused on the business outcomes or the it outcomes and not the care and feeding or tweaking of the equipment. And so, you know I think the best example of that is, you know, what we've done with power store in terms of the ground up architecture that's really built with machine learning directly into the platform, and the ability to take multiple power stores and look at them as a single logical unit and make recommendations about where things should be located. And and best configured. And so, you know we know because of the fact that we're taking in all of this IO, whether it be on you know our file solution or block slash unified solutions, what the underlying workloads are, and the fact that we're building in this knowledge, this intelligence into the system is part of why we designed the architecture from the ground up when we're talking about power store. And and if you go back and look at the original design of OneFS, and that highly scaled out architecture you know it's been a calling card for OneFS since almost a day one, which is this concept of simplicity at scale, Right? And, you know the fact that you have petabytes and petabytes of data shouldn't mean that you need tens or hundreds of hundreds of people to manage and feed it. You should, you know you should be able to administer it with with a small number of IT professionals. >> Alright, Travis, want to give you the final word, you know bring us inside you know Customer conversations you're having and what else customers should know about, really Dell Technologies today. >> You know, it's a very interesting time to be part of a technology company with everything that's going on. And I think, you know the last several months have shown us that digital transformation is key to company's success. I look at Dell Technologies and the fact that you know basically over the course of a week, you know we went from very few people or you know, a minority of people working remotely to almost the entire company, working remotely. And you know the thing that made that happen was, our underlying IT systems and the fact that they are built on capabilities that are resilient, that are autonomous, that are modern, and so, You know, I'm extremely bullish about the capabilities that we're bringing to market. I'm extremely bullish about the cloud capabilities that we're building in to our solutions, especially on the unstructured side of the house. And I think that the next wave of I would say the thing that this pandemic has highlighted is the need to be a digital business going forward. And you know I think that speaks very well for the prospects of Dell Technologies going forward and for infrastructure solutions going forward as well. >> Alright, well, Travis, pleasure catching up. Brought to you by Dell Technologies and its ecosystem partners. >> Hello everybody and welcome back to theCube's live coverage of Dell Technologies World here in Las Vegas. I'm your host Rebecca Knight along with my co-host Stu Miniman. We are joined by Travis Vigil. He is the Senior Vice President Product Management at Dell EMC. Thank you so much for coming on theCube, for returning to theCube I should say. >> Thank you so much for having me. >> Here from Austin Texas. >> Yes. Yes I am. >> Mothership. So there is a lot of great storage news so much storage news this week. Break it down for us. What are some of the sort of the headlines that you'd like our viewers to know about? >> Yeah there was a ton this morning in the keynote but for me it was three of the announcements in particular are something that I'm really excited about. The first is that we announced the unity XT which is the next generation platform of our unity product line. We've been shipping unity for a little less than three years. And in that time, we've actually shipped in nearly 80000 units. So it's been very successful for us. It's been known for flexibility, unified block and file, simplicity, value and with this release we're really taking it to the next level. We are increasing the performance entirely new hardware platform. It increases the performance up to 2x versus the previous generation. We're increasing data reduction rates up to five to one data reduction rate. It's NVMe ready and it's also architected for a hybrid cloud world. We call it cloud ready. So that's one thing. The second thing I'm excited about is actually that cloud ready part that I just talked about on unity XT. So we announced Dell EMC Cloud storage services today. And basically what that allows you to do is consume unity, Isilone or power Max as a service with direct connections into multiple public clouds which is really cool. And so if you're a customer like a unity XT customer for example, an awesome use case would be hybrid disaster recovery as a service. You don't have to have a secondary data center and you can actually use a ready native replication from on premises to the cloud. We showed a demonstration on stage where we are actually able to fail over to VMC on AWS automatically across on premises and what is consumed as a service unity XT in the cloud. I'm also excited about this capability because if you look at our Isilon product line, the fact that you can direct connect into multiple different public clouds is really cool because what a lot of people use Isilon for is big data analytics, streaming. A lot of the applications that are driving the unstructured data growth need burst compute. And so if you can sit in a data center right next to these multiple public clouds and be able to pick which compute that you want to use with your Isilon and have a customer be able to consume that as a service that's pretty exciting. So cloud services on the portfolio, a big part of the announcement today that I'm excited about. And the third thing I'm excited about is all the other things we announced around Isilon in general. We announced an entirely new software upgrade, a new OS 1fsa.2. That release increases the scalability of our Isilon clusters from 144 to 252. So big increase. Isilon is already known for having a very big single namespace. And so you might be asking well who really needs 252 nodes in a single cluster? Well believe me when I tell you autonomous driving or connected car, media and entertainment are very interested in this capability from us. So those are the big three for me what we're doing on unity XT, what we're doing in terms of cloud Connectivity and what we're doing with respect to Isilon. >> Travis I wonder if we could zoom out for a second here. I think we're at an interesting transition point when you talk about the storage industry. I think historically, storage is highly fragmented. I had my tier one storage, I had my mid-range storage, we had object storage, we had special HPC storage and there are so many different subcategories that you put in the environment. I wrote an article when Dell bought EMC. I said this is the end of the storage industry as we knew it. And I come to a show like this, cloud, hyper converging infrastructure. All of these pieces, storage is important but you just walk through many of the speeds and feeds and some of the new product lines that come out. But storage at the center and the storage admin, that's what EMC World was that's not what I hear at Dell technologies World. Give us kind of where we are in that transformation and of course I'm not saying that two years from now, we're in a storage-less world and nobody thinks about it 'cause data is more important than ever. >> Absolutely. >> Price capacity points are enabling customers to do more with it. So would love just kind of you to reflect back on where we are and where we're going for the market here. >> Yeah that's an excellent question Stu. I think you're exactly right. The discussions that we're having with customers more and more are centered around what you're trying to do, what business problem are you trying to solve? And you look within the portfolio, there have been places that we've done that before like with Isilon, it was very vertical industry focused. Speaking in the language of the customers around healthcare genomics or media and entertainment or whatever industry vertical we were targeting. More and more for the core I.T. buyer it's I want the infrastructure to work with my ecosystem. I'm investing in VMware so I want VRO plugins or I'm utilizing Ansible as my management and orchestration layer. So I want an Ansible playbook. And so if you look at what we've announced on power Max as part of this show, VRO, CSI and Ansible plugins or adapters for power Macs are a big part of what we're announcing because more and more, the customers that we're talking to want the storage to be good performance, cost effective, autonomous in terms of making a lot of decisions and optimizing itself but they want it to work in the broader ecosystem. So I was just having a conversation with a very large customer over in the EBC area earlier and we were talking about power Max and we were talking about all the cool things and all the new speeds and feeds, start talking about the Ansible playbook and that's when the customer leaned in and was like "Tell me more. "How does that work? "Because we're doing Ansible". So I think you're exactly right. I think whether you talk about management and orchestration or you whether you talk about the Dell Tech cloud platform where you can have storage as a piece of that. The conversation is shifting to a higher level, to the application or business problem level. >> Yeah I love it. Take us a little bit at that application space where to spend a bunch of the conversations talking everything from dev ops to containerization and micro services. When you talk about hybrid cloud. Well if I want similar to what the cloud environment is, that's usually what I'm doing. And sure, the VMware piece plays into that too but usually modernization ties into it and I know I've been hearing that story quite a lot bit more when I talked to storage people today. >> Yeah absolutely. I think the dev ops conversation with storage admins is probably one of the most popular conversation we're having. What are you doing for CSI plugins? We just announced one for our extreme IO product line, a lot of interest, a lot of conversations around that. And I think the conversation is also shifting to help me manage it, help me get me more intelligence about my storage estate versus speeds and feeds so one of the key conversations we have with customers is around a capability we have which is called Cloud IQ which I like to call it a health tracker for your storage estate. It gives you statistics, it gives you capacity trending. It gives you performance trending, it uses A.I. to predict capacity spikes or performance anomalies. And it's really an awesome tool for our customers because customers that use that are able to resolve issues in their environment three times faster than customers that don't. So I think you're absolutely right Stu, the conversation is more about how do I use the storage array in my environment? What ecosystems am I supporting? So it works with all the other stuff that I have to deal with. >> So digital transformation has been the buzzword of the last five years and the theme of this year's real transformation. I want to talk a little bit about implementation of these big technology initiatives. How do you work with customers to define exactly what they need, gather, garner support and make sure everyone is pulling in the same direction and wants the same thing? And then really bring it together. I mean is that, first of all, a challenge? And then second of all, walk us through the steps of what you do. >> Yeah I think to the earlier conversation there is a spectrum of conversations that we're having with customers and as Dell Technologies, we talk to customers big and small and we talk to customers who want to procure a solution or they want to procure an array. And I think the common thread in the conversations we're having is, give me the information that I need so that I can easily integrate it into my environment. And we're not out of the world where people care about IOPS and latency and all the speeds and feeds in the storage array. But increasingly there's customers are like "Yeah, yeah I need that "but I need you to tell me how it works "in my oracle environment "or my SAP environment". And so you can look at a lot of the solutions that Dell Technologies is bringing together via our solutions group. We've brought out an A.I. solution and with computing, networking and storage. We're focusing on SAP as a high value workload where customers again, compute networking and storage how do you bring it all together and kind of t shirt size the different solutions. So you know I think that if I look at it from a product lens that's how we're approaching it. There's also a services lens to look at it which is there's many customers that still want to do it themselves. And there's many customers that say "Hey can I get a managed service? "Can you just do it for me?" So we have a broad spectrum of customers and many customers that are on different places on that journey but it's definitely the conversations no matter where you're starting are all trending to, I want you to do more so I can focus on my business and my applications. >> So Travis really we've merged through the largest acquisition in tech history. You came from the Dell side. >> I did. >> The Dell storage side so would just love to get real quick your perspective on being in the Dell storage team to now being in the Dell Technologies, Dell EMC storage team and what that impact's been when you're meeting with customers that huge booster into the enterprise space too. >> Yeah it's been an amazing journey over these last two plus years. I guess going on three years now and I took a little break from being outside of the product group and I came back about a year ago. And so you're right I ran product management for Dell storage for quite some time and then I had the great opportunity to come back and run product management for all of Dell EMC storage. And you know I think there's a lot of stuff that's the same. We're still driving the roadmap, we're still prioritizing customer needs. We're still striving to provide the best possible solution for customers in what we do as a storage array or what we do in a broader solution. But you know the coming together of Dell and EMC from my perspective, it's been a great success. We had a lot of strength on the compute side, we had a small storage business. EMC had a large storage business. And so the combination of the two it's just been like chocolate and peanut butter. I mean it's been really good and I'm amazed at all the conversations and all the customers that have invested in Dell EMC for their storage infrastructure. When we have some of these customer events and you have name brand universities or large government entities and they're there giving you feedback about how they're using Isilon or ECS or whatever in their environment it's just a really impressive portfolio that we have and it's been an absolute joy. >> Well that's great. Next year I want the Dell EMC candy bar. So there's your next product idea (laughs). >> With chocolate and peanut butter. >> We're here with Jeff Boudreau and Travis Vigil, and we're going to dig into the details about Dell's big data protection announcement. Guys, good to see you. Thanks for coming in. >> Good to see you. Thank you for having us. >> You're very welcome. Let's start off, Jeff, with a high level, you know I'd like to talk about the customer, what challenges they're facing. You're talking to customers all the time, what are they telling you? >> Sure. As you know, we spend a lot of time with our customers, specifically listening, learning understanding their use cases their pain points within their specific environments. They tell us a lot, to no surprise to any of us that data is a key theme that they talk about. It's one of their most important assets. They need to extract more value from that data to fuel their business models their innovation engines, their competitive edge. So they need to make sure that that data is accessible it's secure, and it's recoverable, especially in today's world with the increased cyber attacks. >> Okay. So maybe we could get into some of those challenges. I mean, when you talk about things like data sprawl what do you mean by that? What should people know? >> Sure, so for those big three themes, I'd say, you know you have data sprawl, which is the big one which is all about the massive amounts of data. It's the growth of that data which is growing at an unprecedented rates. It's the gravity of that data and the reality of the multi-cloud sprawl. So stuff is just everywhere, right? Which increases that service, attack space for cyber criminals. >> And by gravity you mean the data's there and people don't want to move it. >> It's everywhere, right? And so when it lands someplace, think Edge, Core or Cloud, it's there. And it's something we have to help our customers with. >> Okay. So it's nuanced cause complexity has other layers. What are those layers? >> Sure. When we talk to our customers they tell us complexity is one of their big themes. And specifically it's around data complexity. We talked about that growth and gravity of the data. We talk about multi-cloud complexity and we talk about multi-cloud sprawl. So multiple vendors, multiple contracts multiple tool chains, and none of those work together in this, you know, multi-cloud world. Then that drives their security complexity. So we talk about that increased attack surface. But this really drives a lot of operational complexity for their teams. Think about, we're lack consistency through everything. So people, process, tools, all that stuff which is really wasting time and money for our customers. >> So how does that affect the cyber strategies and the, I've often said the CISO, now they have this shared responsibility model they have to do that across multiple clouds. Every cloud has its own security policies and frameworks and syntax. So maybe you could double click on your perspective on that. >> Sure. I'd say the big challenge customers have seen, it's really inadequate cyber resiliency. And specifically they're feeling very exposed. And today as the world with cyber attacks being more and more sophisticated, if something goes wrong it is a real challenge for them to get back up and running quickly. And that's why this is such a big topic for CEOs and businesses around the world. >> You know, it's funny, I said this in my open, I think that prior to the pandemic businesses were optimized for efficiency and now they're like, wow, we have to actually put some headroom into the system to be more resilient, you know? Are you hearing that? >> Yeah, we absolutely are. I mean, the customers really they're asking us for help, right? It's one of the big things we're learning and hearing from them. And it's really about three things one's about simplifying IT. Two, it's really helping them to extract more value from their data. And then the third big piece is ensuring their data is protected and recoverable regardless of where it is going back to that data gravity and that very, you know the multi-cloud world. Just recently, I don't know if you've seen it, but the global data protected, excuse me the global data protection index. >> GDPI. >> Yes. Jesus! >> Not to be confused with GDPR. >> Actually that was released today and confirms everything we just talked about around customer challenges but also it highlights an importance of having a very cyber, a robust cyber resilient data protection strategy. >> Yeah, I haven't seen the latest, but I want to dig into it. I think this, you've done this many, many years in a row. I like to look at the time series and see how things have changed. All right. At a high level, Jeff, can you kind of address why Dell and from your point of view is best suited? >> Sure. So we believe there's a better way or a better approach on how to handle this. We think Dell is uniquely positioned to help our customers as a one stop shop, if you will, for that cyber resilient multi-cloud data protection solution and needs. We take a modern, a simple and resilient approach. >> Well what does that mean? What do you mean by modern? >> Sure. So modern, we talk about our software defined architecture, right? It's really designed to meet the needs not only of today but really into the future. And we protect data across any cloud and any workload. So we have a proven track record doing this today. We have more than 1700 customers that trust us to protect more than 14 exabytes of their data in the cloud today. >> Okay. So you said modern, simple and resilient. What, what do you mean by simple? >> Sure. We want to provide simplicity everywhere, going back to helping with the complexity challenge, and that's from deployment to consumption to management and support. So our offers will deploy in minutes. They are easy to operate and use and we support flexible consumption models for whatever customer may desire. So traditional, subscription, or as a service. >> And when you talk about resilient, I mean I put forth that premise, but it's hard because people say, well, that's going to going to cost us more. Well, it may, but you're going to also reduce your risk. So what's your point of view on resilience? >> Yeah, I think it's something all customers need. So we're going to be providing a comprehensive and resilient portfolio of cyber solutions that are secured by design. We have some some unique capabilities in a combination of things like built in immuneability, physical and logical isolation. We have intelligence built in with AI parred recovery and just one, I guess fun fact for everybody is we have our cyber vault is the only solution in the industry that is endorsed by Sheltered Harbor that meets all the needs of the financial sector. >> So it's interesting when you think about the NIST framework for cybersecurity, it's all about layers. You're sort of bringing that now to data protection. >> Correct. >> Yeah. All right. In a minute we're going to come back with Travis and dig into the news. The Future of Multicloud Data Protection is Here FULL EPISODE V1
>> Prior to the pandemic, organizations were largely optimized for efficiency as the best path to bottom line profits. Many CIOs tell theCUBE privately that they were caught off guard by the degree to which their businesses required greater resiliency beyond their somewhat cumbersome disaster recovery processes. And the lack of that business resilience has actually cost firms because they were unable to respond to changing market forces. And certainly, we've seen this dynamic with supply chain challenges. And there's a little doubt we're also seeing it in the area of cybersecurity generally, and data recovery specifically. Over the past 30 plus months, the rapid adoption of cloud to support remote workers and build in business resilience had the unintended consequences of expanding attack vectors, which brought an escalation of risk from cybercrime. While security in the public cloud is certainly world class, the result of multicloud has brought with it multiple shared responsibility models, multiple ways of implementing security policies across clouds and on-prem. And at the end of the day, more, not less, . But there's a positive side to this story. The good news is that public policy, industry collaboration and technology innovation is moving fast to accelerate data protection and cybersecurity strategies with a focus on modernizing infrastructure, securing the digital supply chain, and very importantly, simplifying the integration of data protection and cybersecurity. Today, there's heightened awareness that the world of data protection is not only an adjacency to, but is becoming a fundamental component of cybersecurity strategies. In particular, in order to build more resilience into a business, data protection people, technologies and processes must be more tightly coordinated with security operations. In this segment, we welcome into theCUBE two senior executives from Dell who will share details on new technology announcements that directly address these challenges. Jeff Boudreau is the President and General Manager of Dell's Infrastructure Solutions Group, ISG, and he's going to share his perspectives on the market and the challenges he's hearing from customers. Travis is the Senior Vice-President of Product Management for ISG at Dell Technologies, and he's going to give us details on the products that are being announced today and go into the hard news. Now, we're also going to challenge our guests to explain why Dell's approach is unique and different in the marketplace. Thanks for being with us. Let's get right into it. (upbeat music) We're here with Jeff Boudreau and Travis Vigil, and we're going to dig into the details about Dell's big data protection announcement. Guys, good to see you. Thanks for coming in. >> Good to see you. Thank you for having us. >> You're very welcome. Alright, let's start off Jeff, with the high level. You know, I'd like to talk about the customer, what challenges they're facing? You're talking to customers all the time. What are they telling you? >> Sure, as you know, we spend a lot of time with our customers, specifically listening, learning, understanding their use cases, their pain points within their specific environments. They tell us a lot. No surprise to any of us that data is a key theme that they talk about. It's one of their most important assets. They need to extract more value from that data to fuel their business models, their innovation engines, their competitive edge. So, they need to make sure that that data is accessible, it's secure and its recoverable, especially in today's world with the increased cyber attacks. >> Okay, so maybe we could get into some of those challenges. I mean, when you talk about things like data sprawl, what do you mean by that? What should people know? >> Sure, so for those big three themes, I'd say, you have data sprawl, which is the big one, which is all about the massive amounts of data. It's the growth of that data, which is growing at unprecedented rates. It's the gravity of that data and the reality of the multicloud sprawl. So stuff is just everywhere, right? Which increases that surface as attack space for cyber criminals. >> And by gravity, you mean the data's there and people don't want to move it. >> It's everywhere, right? And so when it lands someplace, think Edge, Core or Cloud, it's there. And it's something we have to help our customers with. >> Okay, so it's nuanced 'cause complexity has other layers. What are those layers? >> Sure. When we talk to our customers, they tell us complexity is one of their big themes. And specifically it's around data complexity. We talked about that growth and gravity of the data. We talk about multicloud complexity and we talk about multicloud sprawl. So multiple vendors, multiple contracts, multiple tool chains, and none of those work together in this multicloud world. Then that drives their security complexity. So, we talk about that increased attack surface. But this really drives a lot of operational complexity for their teams. Think about we're lacking consistency through everything. So people, process, tools, all that stuff, which is really wasting time and money for our customers. >> So, how does that affect the cyber strategies and the, I mean, I've often said the Cisco, now they have this shared responsibility model. They have to do that across multiple clouds. Every cloud has its own security policies and frameworks and syntax. So, maybe you could double click on your perspective on that. >> Sure. I'd say the big challenge customers have seen, it's really inadequate cyber resiliency and specifically, they're feeling very exposed. And today as the world with cyber attacks being more and more sophisticated, if something goes wrong, it is a real challenge for them to get back up and running quickly. And that's why this is such a big topic for CEOs and businesses around the world. You know, it's funny. I said this in my open. I think that prior to the pandemic businesses were optimized for efficiency, and now they're like, "Wow, we have to actually put some headroom into the system to be more resilient." You know, are you hearing that? >> Yeah, we absolutely are. I mean, the customers really, they're asking us for help, right? It's one of the big things we're learning and hearing from them. And it's really about three things. One's about simplifying IT. Two, it's really helping them to extract more value from their data. And then the third big piece is ensuring their data is protected and recoverable regardless of where it is going back to that data gravity and that very, you know, the multicloud world. Just recently, I don't know if you've seen it, but the Global Data Protected, excuse me, the Global Data Protection Index. >> GDPI. >> Yes. Jesus. >> Not to be confused with GDPR. >> Actually, that was released today and confirms everything we just talked about around customer challenges. But also it highlights at an importance of having a very cyber, a robust cyber resilient data protection strategy. >> Yeah, I haven't seen the latest, but I want to dig into it. I think this, I've done this many, many years in a row. I'd like to look at the time series and see how things have changed. All right. At a high level, Jeff, can you kind of address why Dell, from your point of view is best suited? >> Sure. So, we believe there's a better way or a better approach on how to handle this. We think Dell is uniquely positioned to help our customers as a one stop shop, if you will, for that cyber resilient multicloud data protection solution and needs. We take a modern, a simple and resilient approach. >> What does that mean? What do you mean by modern? >> Sure. So modern, we talk about our software defined architecture. Right? It's really designed to meet the needs not only of today, but really into the future. And we protect data across any cloud and any workload. So, we have a proven track record doing this today. We have more than 1,700 customers that trust us to protect more than 14 exabytes of their data in the cloud today. >> Okay, so you said modern, simple and resilient. What do you mean by simple? >> Sure. We want to provide simplicity everywhere, going back to helping with the complexity challenge. And that's from deployment to consumption, to management and support. So, our offers will deploy in minutes. They are easy to operate and use, and we support flexible consumption models for whatever the customer may desire. So, traditional subscription or as a service. >> And when you talk about resilient, I mean, I put forth that premise, but it's hard because people say, "Well, that's going to cost us more. Well, it may, but you're going to also reduce your risk." So, what's your point of view on resilience? >> Yeah, I think it's something all customers need. So, we're going to be providing a comprehensive and resilient portfolio of cyber solutions that are secure by design. And we have some unique capabilities and a combination of things like built in immutability, physical and logical isolation. We have intelligence built in with AI part recovery. And just one, I guess fun fact for everybody is we have, our cyber vault is the only solution in the industry that is endorsed by Sheltered Harbor that meets all the needs of the financial sector. >> So it's interesting when you think about the NIST framework for cybersecurity. It's all about about layers. You're sort of bringing that now to data protection. >> Jeff: Correct. Yeah. >> All right. In a minute, we're going to come back with Travis and dig into the news. We're going to take a short break. Keep it right there. (upbeat music) (upbeat adventurous music) Okay, we're back with Jeff and Travis Vigil to dig deeper into the news. Guys, again, good to see you. Travis, if you could, maybe you, before we get into the news, can you set the business context for us? What's going on out there? >> Yeah. Thanks for that question, Dave. To set a little bit of the context, when you look at the data protection market, Dell has been a leader in providing solutions to customers for going on nearly two decades now. We have tens of thousands of people using our appliances. We have multiple thousands of people using our latest modern, simple PowerProtect Data Manager Software. And as Jeff mentioned, we have, 1,700 customers protecting 14 exabytes of data in the public clouds today. And that foundation gives us a unique vantage point. We talked to a lot of customers and they're really telling us three things. They want simple solutions. They want us to help them modernize. And they want us to add as the highest priority, maintain that high degree of resiliency that they expect from our data protection solutions. So, that's the backdrop to the news today. And as we go through the news, I think you'll agree that each of these announcements deliver on those pillars. And in particular, today we're announcing the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance. We are announcing PowerProtect Cyber Recovery Enhancements, and we are announcing enhancements to our APEX Data Storage Services. >> Okay, so three pieces. Let's dig to that. It's interesting, appliance, everybody wants software, but then you talk to customers and they're like, "Well, we actually want appliances because we just want to put it in and it works." >> Travis: (laughs) Right. >> It performs great. So, what do we need to know about the appliance? What's the news there? >> Well, you know, part of the reason I gave you some of those stats to begin with is that we have this strong foundation of experience, but also intellectual property components that we've taken that have been battle tested in the market. And we've put them together in a new simple, integrated appliance that really combines the best of the target appliance capabilities we have with that modern, simple software. And we've integrated it from the, you know, sort of taking all of those pieces, putting them together in a simple, easy to use and easy to scale interface for customers. >> So, the premise that I've been putting forth for months now, probably well over a year, is that data protection is becoming an extension of your cybersecurity strategies. So, I'm interested in your perspective on cyber recovery. Your specific news that you have there. >> Yeah, you know, we are in addition to simplifying things via the appliance, we are providing solutions for customers no matter where they're deploying. And cyber recovery, especially when it comes to cloud deployments, is an increasing area of interest and deployment that we see with our customers. So, what we're announcing today is that we're expanding our cyber recovery services to be available in Google Cloud. With this announcement, it means we're available in all three of the major clouds and it really provides customers the flexibility to secure their data no matter if they're running on-premises, in Acolo, at the Edge, in the public cloud. And the other nice thing about this announcement is that you have the ability to use Google Cloud as a cyber recovery vault that really allows customers to isolate critical data and they can recover that critical data from the vault back to on-premises or from that vault back to running their cyber protection or their data protection solutions in the public cloud. >> I always invoke my favorite Matt Baker here. "It's not a zero sum game", but this is a perfect example where there's opportunities for a company like Dell to partner with the public cloud provider. You've got capabilities that don't exist there. You've got the on-prem capabilities. We could talk about Edge all day, but that's a different topic. Okay, so my other question Travis, is how does this all fit into APEX? We hear a lot about APEX as a service. It's sort of the new hot thing. What's happening there? What's the news around APEX? >> Yeah, we've seen incredible momentum with our APEX solutions since we introduced data protection options into them earlier this year. And we're really building on that momentum with this announcement being providing solutions that allow customers to consume flexibly. And so, what we're announcing specifically is that we're expanding APEX Data Storage Services to include a data protection option. And it's like with all APEX offers, it's a pay-as-you-go solution. Really streamlines the process of customers purchasing, deploying, maintaining and managing their backup software. All a customer really needs to do is specify their base capacity. They specify their performance tier. They tell us do they want a one year term or a three year term and we take it from there. We get them up and running so they can start deploying and consuming flexibly. And as with many of our APEX solutions, it's a simple user experience all exposed through a unified APEX Console. >> Okay, so it's, you're keeping it simple, like I think large, medium, small. You know, we hear a lot about T-shirt sizes. I'm a big fan of that 'cause you guys should be smart enough to figure out, you know, based on my workload, what I need. How different is this? I wonder if you guys could address this. Jeff, maybe you can start. >> Sure, I'll start and then- >> Pitch me. >> You know, Travis, you jump in when I screw up here. >> Awesome. >> So, first I'd say we offer innovative multicloud data protection solutions. We provide that deliver performance, efficiency and scale that our customers demand and require. We support as Travis said, all the major public clouds. We have a broad ecosystem of workload support and I guess the great news is we're up to 80% more cost effective than any of the competition. >> Dave: 80%? >> 80% >> Hey, that's a big number. All right, Travis, what's your point of view on this? >> Yeah, I think number one, end-to-end data protection. We are that one stop shop that I talked about, whether it's a simplified appliance, whether it's deployed in the cloud, whether it's at the Edge, whether it's integrated appliances, target appliances, software. We have solutions that span the gamut as a service. I mentioned the APEX Solution as well. So really, we can provide solutions that help support customers and protect them, any workload, any cloud, anywhere that data lives. Edge, Core to Cloud. The other thing that we hear as a big differentiator for Dell, and Jeff touched on on this a little bit earlier, is our Intelligent Cyber Resiliency. We have a unique combination in the market where we can offer immutability or protection against deletion as sort of that first line of defense. But we can also offer a second level of defense, which is isolation, talking about data vaults or cyber vaults and cyber recovery. And more importantly, the intelligence that goes around that vault. It can look at detecting cyber attacks. It can help customers speed time to recovery. And really provides AI and ML to help early diagnosis of a cyber attack and fast recovery should a cyber attack occur. And if you look at customer adoption of that solution, specifically in the cloud, we have over 1300 customers utilizing PowerProtect Cyber Recovery. >> So, I think it's fair to say that your portfolio has obviously been a big differentiator. Whenever I talk to your finance team, Michael Dell, et cetera, that end-to-end capability, that your ability to manage throughout the supply chain. We actually just did an event recently with you guys where you went into what you're doing to make infrastructure trusted. And so my take on that is you, in a lot of respects, you're shifting the client's burden to your R&D. now they have a lot of work to do, so it's not like they can go home and just relax. But that's a key part of the partnership that I see. Jeff, I wonder if you could give us the final thoughts. >> Sure. Dell has a long history of being a trusted partner within IT, right? So, we have unmatched capabilities. Going back to your point, we have the broadest portfolio. We're a leader in every category that we participate in. We have a broad deep breadth of portfolio. We have scale. We have innovation that is just unmatched. Within data protection itself, we are the trusted market leader. No if, ands or buts. We're number one for both data protection software in appliances per IDC and we were just named for the 17th consecutive time the leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant. So, bottom line is customers can count on Dell. >> Yeah, and I think again, we're seeing the evolution of data protection. It's not like the last 10 years. It's really becoming an adjacency and really, a key component of your cyber strategy. I think those two parts of the organization are coming together. So guys, really appreciate your time. We said that data recovery strategies have to be built into security practices and procedures and by default, this should include modern hardware and software. Now, in addition to reviewing some of the challenges that customers face, which have been pretty well documented, we heard about new products that Dell Technologies is bringing to the marketplace that specifically address these customer concerns. And there were three that we talked about today. First, the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance, which is an integrated system taking advantage of Dell's history in data protection, but adding new capabilities. And I want to come back to that in a moment. Second is Dell's PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for Google Cloud platform. This rounds out the big three public cloud providers for Dell, which joins AWS and Azure support. Now finally, Dell has made its target backup appliances available in APEX. You might recall, earlier this year we saw the introduction from Dell of APEX Backup Services and then in May at Dell Technologies World, we heard about the introduction of APEX Cyber Recovery Services. And today, Dell is making its most popular backup appliances available in APEX. Now, I want to come back to the PowerProtect Data Manager Appliance because it's a new integrated appliance and I asked Dell off camera, "Really what is so special about these new systems and what's really different from the competition?" Because look, everyone offers some kind of integrated appliance. So, I heard a number of items. Dell talked about simplicity and efficiency and containers and Kubernetes. So, I kind of kept pushing and got to what I think is the heart of the matter in two really important areas. One is simplicity. Dell claims that customers can deploy the system in half the time relative to the competition. So, we're talking minutes to deploy, and of course that's going to lead to much simpler management. And the second real difference I heard was backup and restore performance for VMware workloads. In particular, Dell has developed transparent snapshot capabilities to fundamentally change the way VMs are protected, which leads to faster backup and restores with less impact on virtual infrastructure. Dell believes this new development is unique in the market and claims that in its benchmarks, the new appliance was able to back up 500 virtual machines in 47% less time compared to a leading competitor. Now, this is based on Dell benchmarks, so hopefully these are things that you can explore in more detail with Dell to see if and how they apply to your business. The Alignment of Data Protection and Cybersecurity
(light upbeat music) >> Prior to the pandemic, organizations were largely optimized for efficiency, as the best path to bottom line profits. Many CIOs tell theCUBE privately that they were caught off guard by the degree to which their businesses required greater resiliency beyond their somewhat cumbersome disaster recovery processes. And the lack of that business resilience has actually cost firms because they were unable to respond to changing market forces. Certainly we've seen this dynamic with supply chain challenges. And there's a little doubt we're also seeing it in the area of cybersecurity generally, and data recovery specifically. Over the past 30 plus months, the rapid adoption of cloud to support remote workers, and building business resilience, had the unintended consequences of expanding attack vectors which brought an escalation of risk from cybercrime. While security in the public clouds is certainly world class, the result of multi-cloud has brought with it multiple shared responsibility models, multiple ways of implementing security policies across clouds, and on-prem. At the end of the day, more, not less, complexity. But there's a positive side to this story. The good news is that public policy, industry collaboration, and technology innovation is moving fast to accelerate data protection and cybersecurity strategies with a focus on modernizing infrastructure, securing the digital supply chain, and very importantly simplifying the integration of data protection and cybersecurity. Today there's heightened awareness that the world of data protection is not only an adjacency to but it's becoming a fundamental component of cybersecurity strategies. In particular, in order to build more resilience into a business, data protection, people, technologies, and processes must be more tightly coordinated with security operations.
