Continue our coverage. We're joined by Stormy Peters, who was the senior manager community lead at Red Hat and stormy. Good afternoon to you. Are you going after him? All right. So you think about you know I love that, you know, community lead. You know, in an open source based company. You like Red Hat. Your job is very simply expanded. Evolved ecosystem, Right? So So I mean, how are you? I guess using that that company culture that embedded culture to grow, I think it's already pretty well established. What are your reputation is for how open you guys are right to the community. And what have you What are you doing in terms of leveraging that and trying to expand on that reputation? >> Yeah. Our goal is to make sure we're supporting those upstream communities. So all of all of Red Hat software is open source, and we worked with a whole community of individuals and companies, and the upstream opens our software. And we want to make sure that we're not just contributing features that we want but that were a good player, that we're helping to make sure those communities air healthy. And so, for a number of the projects that were involved in, we actually assigned a fulltime community manager a community lead to help make sure that project is healthy. So we have someone on everything from stuff and Lester Toe fedora Toe Cooper Netease. I'm just making sure the community does, well, >> stormy. You actually did a session for analysts about about a month or so ago, and I've been involved with open source for about twenty years, and you said something that made me do a double take and had to rethink the way I look at this commune unity. And it was we used to think of open source as well. May be I worked on a project, or maybe I spent a little bit time on nights and weekends and it was just kind of giving of time. You said that a majority of people working in this, they've got day jobs that is contribution to this. It's, you know, we understand that companies like IBM and Red Hat and Google often will have that. But the majority of people that are contributing open source now that is their job or a major part of their job. Could you stand a little bit about You know, how we saw that shift? And it's just me that snuck up on. >> So I think it's stuck up on us, all of us. But I really do think it's a fundamental shift that we need to consider so that we can make sure that we're helping the ecosystem the best way possible. So when open Source first started, it was people in their free time. You know, Linus Torvalds had a project he wanted to work on. You had it, it's described. You wanted your desktop to run free software, and so you put your free time into it evenings and weekends. And if you've got a paid job, working on it like that was something to celebrate like that was everybody's dream. And these days, with software becoming more complicated, more complex, and the solutions are even bigger and greater with the cloud there more than a one person project. They're like multi people, multi company projects. And so more and more people are getting paid to work on them and they're getting forty hours a week paid time to work on these projects. They might give more, but they're getting a full time salary. And so how we include not just the individuals but the companies that are paying them to work on it, I think changes how our project's work. I think it's a huge opportunity, >> and I mean talk about that shift a little bit, if you would then and how that has, I would say mature the marketplace. But certainly it's altered the the flows of jobs and innovation and development and all that, because I kind of passed time before now full time and what comes with that? I mean, what challenges come with that we're all of a sudden It is Ah, little, it's it's a little more parent, if you will, right and that you're a little more evident in wherever you're working because it is a full time commitment outs no longer just a of casual or less than full time pursuit. >> Yeah, I think it's a good thing, but I do think adds challenges. So, for example, on boarding process, you used to know when you had an open source software project you've got. Someone was giving up on our two of their evening TTO. Learn your project so you had to make sure that getting started docks worked for them within twenty thirty minutes. Maybe these days, you know, it's really hard to install a lot of this software in twenty or thirty minutes, but someone's doing it is their day job. They're going to have a day or a week. So the on boarding process is different, which I think makes it harder for volunteers and easier for paid volunteers and paid so little a little hard to distinguish. But for people that have all day to do it, they have a little more time to get on board into the on boarding processes are take longer. I think the problem is that we can solve our more complex because someone can spend an entire week. They're not breaking their thought process up like evenings. They have, like, all day. They can work with teams across cos he can pull in lots more expertise. We have a special interest groups and projects like Santos on where we're pulling in different companies to work together. I'm so like we're working on an NFI save with Intel and others. I'm so you get you get more diversity of people that could work on it. That can dedicate more brainpower to in one one setting. >> You can't. Can you talk a little bit about? You've worked on foundations and you support foundations. Talk about special interest groups. It's pay broad and very diverse ecosystem. Sometimes the outside rose like, Oh, it's thie, open source community and like No, no, no. There is not the open source community, their communities and lots of overlap. And they work in Iraq, maybe give us a little bit of context and love to hear some examples of some of the things you're working on. >> Yes, I think the first point is like projects aren't there. How they worked. Their governance isn't isn't static like it's always changing, like you might start a project on your own in your free time and it grew and you convinced all of us to join you. And now there's twenty people working on it and you want to be able to go on vacation and then you want to leave somebody in charge. So do you give him maintainer status? Do you create a board and let people vote? So you create a foundation like someone offers you money? How do you take it like I do? You put it in your bank account. Er, do you have to start it like a nonprofit to take this money? So I think they're constantly evolving. So an example that I have is the foundation we created the set foundation thiss year last year. Recently, um, and stuff has been open. Source It was it was open source created by thinktank acquired by Red. How we created a board of advisors around it to keep all those companies involved. And it had evolved to the point where people wanted to give it money. And so it needed to be something. You know, these companies wanted to collaborate on marketing together, So we created this a foundation as ah directed funded clinics foundation and had, like thirty companies joined in the very beginning, so I think I don't know what the next stage herself will be, but they're always evolving like that. >> But so what does it do if you will? Self? How do you pick projects out if you have thirty? Voice is a lot of voice. Is a lot of people raising their hands and let's look at this. Look at that. You know how to govern that. How do you, ah, assign work? How does all that work in that kind of? That's a really open environment that you're trying to corral a little bit. >> So So we're not trying to corral. We're tryingto like we're >> organized. A better >> word. Better word. >> So that the foundation was was enable people to collaborate on the marketing side, mostly a money side they wanted to give money for, like Suffolk on event. That's happening in a couple of weeks. There's a big annual event they wanted to be able to do Seth days. I'm things that you want to give money to enable it was getting really complicated. Will you pay for the beer and I'LL pay for the food and you know we'LL do it that way. The stuff project technically is led by a group of volunteers will have paid jobs and there's a project lead person for each sub project. And then they have a monthly meeting of all of the the whole project. And then each of those sub projects has a weekly meeting and something that stuff doesn't I think, is really interesting as they record all of their team meetings like it's a video meeting and they record it and they put it on YouTube and people watch the like. I think that's awesome. But it helps them with the time zone problem to record the meeting and put it on YouTube. >> One of the other things that I find really fascinating is many enterprise Cos now you know, we know they're using open source, but they're contributing open source. I remember back the future of open source survey that was done is think it was like half of companies that you know we're using it are also contributing. What do you see? You know, we've talked to users of the show for many years, is toe You know why they see value and why'd you do it, but it would love to hear your take. >> So I do think cos air. They're using open source software, but they're contributing on DH. People talk about what you contribute, the features that you want to see, but I think you contribute to the things you find exciting and that you want to participate in contributions. Starts at like very beginning level of just filing a bug report when you see it are coming to an events and going to the happy hour for that for that project of seven Cluster have won this afternoon. This afternoon. You know there's different get togethers and you participate by meeting the people, telling them how you're using it. I'm telling them what you'd like to see What's cool. I think a lot of people in the open source world, there's an opportunity for the developers to be very close to the users in the way that's harder and proprietary software. And it's really exciting, like if you're working on something and someone comes up and says, Hey, I'm using it and here's what I like Peanuts. It's fun. >> It's working All right. >> How about career advancement? You know, everybody I know in the developer world. It's like, Well, get really is your resume these days? So I gotta imagine that just the skill set and the education is such a huge part for so many companies. >> Yeah, with more people getting paid to work on open source and they can show what they worked on on that it's more, not more coming. It's very easy to move to another job, taking your skill set with you and it's very valued and you even get to keep your community of people that you're working with as you move around and help different companies with that project. How do you >> divvy it up in a community where you know the workload is kind of equally shared? Or there's a fair share of work being done and you and you want to. Maybe some people have a different level of expertise on DH, so there's some policing that kind of has to be done or argus. Some responsibilities assign whatever >> that could be >> a little delicate. Sometimes candidates you won't get the right people doing the right things, and you'LL love, willingness and enthusiasm. But sometimes you do have to kind of decide are you gonna work on this? We're gonna work on that. >> So some projects have done a really excellent job of defining the rolls and assigning them and having like, a mentoring process to get new people there. So, for example, Cooper Netease on the release team, there's like people that worked on the release team. And then, if you're interested, you raise your hand and you like work with the the person that's in that role for, like, an entire release. And so you get like a whole released to be mentored and taught, and then the next year you're the person doing the release and you can mentor somebody else. So I think the process is help with that. And it's, I think there's some really great work. >> You're building the farm team basically right. You're bringing them along on training wheels to a certain degree and then let him ride the bike by themselves, yet makes sense. >> So speaking of getting people ready, there was something new announced this week that I'm hoping you could explain. The Red Hat Universal Base image was explained to me that this is really a subset, Terrell or being roll ready. What Does that mean? How is that going to impact developers? >> Yeah, the idea is to help developers developed in containers on Lenox and in a way that they can so the FBI is based on, Well, it's a subset of rela packages. It's a it's a container, so in the clouds face and that you can develop your app on it. And then you can share that container with anybody. Whether or not there are real user, I'm so you can share it with anybody in the world had them developed on it. But then, when you're done, it is supported on grell and open shift so you can have full enterprise support for that's >> a show like this. Inject new blood new perspective into what you do. But I would assume this is a pretty good recruiting opportunity to in a lot of respects. And you stay pretty busy over the course of these three days, meeting with a lot of new people, meeting a lot of new faces, getting a lot of new ideas, a house to show kind of fit into what you're going to do the other three hundred sixty two days in a year. >> Well, We look forward to this show for three hundred sixty four days a year, so we're always planning foreign prepping for it. It adds energy. It adds excitement. We get to connect with people. They're using the software. Hopefully, they do come to the happy hours or down to the booth and talk to us and say, Here's how we're using it. We hope to get more people involved. People that are using software that want to learn about it, get him more involved. >> Well, you've got a great job of pulling the community together. We wish you continued success in doing that. live from San Francisco it's the cube covering Red Hat summit 2018 brought to you by Red Hat okay welcome back everyone live here in San Francisco California at Moscone West is the cubes exclusive coverage of Red Hat summit 2018 I'm John for your Cohoes with my co Sam John Troy co-founder of tech reckoning and as an analyst firm and community development advisory a next guests a star meter senior manager community leads at Red Hat welcome to the cube good to see you again so obviously the success of open source is grounded in community we'd love talking about community and there's a lot of new things happening new dynamics that are somewhat similar to us in the past but a new generation is coming into open source it's clear by the growth I mean go to any any event and you know just that the Linux Foundation event Jim's daylan's or is it to slide out exponential growth more code coming in so you know give to trot out all the ethos contribute be part of a project and so that the lines are still there but it's evolving and what's your thoughts on on it as it grows I'm looking at the big ecosystem here growing at Red Hat more contributors more projects more products yeah we definitely have the communities are growing and we have more participation and all the projects across the board and I think one of the things that's interesting is the the projects that we're working on are things that one person can't develop or use all on their own and we're talking like software-defined storage or talking OpenStack big solutions and so companies are paying people to work on them and I think over the last 10 years that's been the really big difference like our shares with Dirk at VM was heading up all their open sources and we just didn't Copenhagen and he was reiterating and reminding me because I found myself falling in the trap and a lot of new companies that come into open source I am gonna I'm gonna get people involved in a product I'm gonna join that project so we can commercialize the project versus commercialize their offering and being part of our project so Dirk when I were talking and he was emphasizing languages everything language defines behavior and that the project is an open contributed project on it the product that's commercialized is different and this is not new to read that but it's worth just reeling some of the language as new people come in your thoughts on this yeah so Red Hat we're really clear on what's upstream what's the open source version that everyone is working on together and then what's the version that we're supporting for our customers they have the same codebase they have the same features but the upstream version we call a project and the downstream version we call a product and sometimes they're even branded differently for example manage IQ is the upstream project in cloud forms Red Hat cloud forms is the downstream product and that's where the action is for Red Hat to to commercialize and or productize alright Lord and get all around it but then they contribute everything backups everything's developed upstream so you and you and the other community managers are you at Red Hat it's a little bit different right open source the open source way and open source ethos so you do have a you know these open source communities as well as user communities are you involved with both I mean how do you how do you meld the two how do you differentiate the two you know in the context of Red Hat if I'm a Red Hat customer yes so they're all the same or overlapping so usually you'll have a core group of contributors who maybe some maybe Red Hat employees some may work at another company that either a user company or a partner company some may be individuals working on it and it's kind of your core base but then you have like people that that are participating watching very carefully may be contributing once in a while that are watching that and then you have users and so they're not separate groups of people they're overlapping groups of people that's great the in terms of community here at the show right once you have community that's that's 365 right you come you come to an event and it's like kind of like homecoming so how has the experience been this year for you at Red Hat summit with the Red Hat community people coming together you know a community activities that sort of thing it's it's a really great place to bring people together so that we have all of our customers we have contributors and everyone is on the floor talking so like we're in community central here the floor and our booth has been full of people all day long even when they announce that it's closing there's still people around and talking and we have everything from customer events where we talk to customers about how we work on an upstream - actually that we've had contributor meetups where everyone gets together and meets all their fellow contributors in person how do you guys handle the growth because you know with with growth you have still new ideas coming in so you want to keep an open inclusive environment is there any new things you guys are doing they make sure all the best ideas are being surfaced up or is it the same program seems to think keep going that that way I think I think the best projects evolve over time so we're always looking at the governance of our projects and does it fit where that project is right now and so when a project first starts out it might have a benevolent dictator and then later when it has more contributors and more companies involved you might have even might evolve to a board or to a technical group so for example Gluster we just graduated to a group of maintainer x' that make decisions as opposed to just a project lead is there like a norm or is there a certain pattern that emerges for the puck the programs up I mean the project's having a certain format that you seen that works best or this is more ad hoc based on who's involved it's a little ad hoc but I think most of them start with a very strong personality who has a vision and so a lot of them start either as benevolent dictators or as you know someone who's the main project lead and then as they grow bigger over time you end up with more of a voting member to board of directors Stiles to like Apache and then now today there's a lot of foundations involved to write some some things are are in the Red Hat orbit more more closely others we you know like we were just at KU con so the all the Linux Foundation different the for instance the kubernetes the CN CF as well as stuff like you know the Cloud Foundry and OpenStack foundation so I mean can you talk a little bit about the role of foundations now in modern community in socially open-source yeah I think it's it's part of this evolution from all the contributors we're working as individuals which they still are two companies being able to to pay for people to work on these projects and so the companies want to not just give people time to these projects they also want to donate money and pull their resources to do joint marketing or to push kubernetes forward and so organizations like the CNCs the Linux Foundation enable those companies to work together more effectively if done a good job of balancing I mean they got a lot of logos I mean a lot of people paying them money so there's a commercial aspect but they've been very transparent about that trying to create a great core community and they've separated the technical steering committee from the membership which is smart most the foundations are really good about leaving the technical steering committee to work as it's worked well in open-source and then having the company has pulled their money for for marketing or for filling in the holes where they're not getting volunteers start go ahead well story I just wanted to extend the governance conversation a little bit to the culture as well the I mean we're we're in an interesting place again 2018 in our bigger culture those of us who've been involved in online culture and online communities we know the ways these things can go wrong and we've seen it you know how do you as an individual and your team develop and foster a inclusive and participatory culture in your in the communities of Red Hat I think he said we've all seen things go wrong but I think we also have a lot of experience now about how to foster the culture that we would like and how to include people and so you're seeing a lot more efforts like most online communities are pretty nice places to hang out these days and you're seeing a lot of effort to make sure there's code of conduct for the projects that there's kind of conduct for the events that people are welcome there's a diversity event tomorrow here and so I think we're seeing a lot more inclusiveness and a real effort to bring people in you guys attract a younger demographic we were talking earlier with Denise and because it's open source you got academic you could go as high school is seeing everything from robotics clubs - you know coding early on so you get the redheads getting the mirth for her Li and so she made the kind we're gonna grow our own talent so you know kind of a tongue-in-cheek but you guys have access to a lot of the younger developers any commentary on you know the orientation shop see their loved mission-driven act the younger folks love mission driven and tech but is there any kind of a new school kind of concepts you seen coming from the young guns that are coming up through the ranks so I recently had a chance to speak to a classroom full of college students and that was you really impressed like they knew what open source was they were familiar with licenses and they all wanted to like make their app or make money but they were really focused on humanitarian causes at the same time and so as you really impressed with that I want to do well in my career but I want to make a difference in the world in a better place on that I was really exciting the safe and now more than ever you with a global footprint we just had UNICEF on earlier here Red Hat labs doing some pretty cool things around you know code for good so I think that's cool the challenge we're seeing is is that okay as enterprises come in the continued balance has always been the case you don't want the big one vendor coming in for on their weight around and we're seeing like even with Java you know which is Oracle Java emails Oracle seeing movement that's kind of opening up so it seems the business model seems to be pretty clear opens winning we certainly think so at Red Hat the best model is to be open what's it like to work here it's a really awesome place to work I love all the people that I work with you know everyone red hat really takes the open-source culture not just to its codebase but also to the culture that it has within the organization and decisions are made openly discussed openly everyone gets input everyone doesn't always get to a vote but everyone gets to to have a say and it's listen to it it's a great place to work technical culture as well I'll see techies very technical - as the as the ecosystem grows right there's obviously a lot more participants in the community and so if a company wants to get involved either say like in the kubernetes community or in the openshift community you know what's the right way for a company to come in and participate in that kind of a community and and maybe what are some wrong ways if a company wants to get involved in the community I think the first thing they do is find them online right are they on IRC talking are they on flack talking join the mailing list go to whatever events are local to you your local meetups go to the big events if you can and just put people on it people that know what you're trying to do with it and can contribute you know either with getting started documentation or with bug reports yeah I think it does have to come down to the people you have to send actual people and it can't be some sort of corporate motion and in some ways community is all about people and making connections it's absolutely about people I start talk about your experience this year right had somehow see the numbers are bigger they're getting great the company's being rate reviews from financial analysts open ship has been very popular some of the obviously this is what kubernetes has been phenomenal o open stacks got a bunch of life into it you seen separation clear visibility now on how things are kind of clicking together on the app side core OS is in it's just interesting right is there it heads kind of going to a home of the level what's the conversations like here inside the hall people who aren't here watching didn't have a chance to come what's what's the main conversations the chatter what's been the focus in the community central booth I think the focus has been on how things work together like how our different products work together and how you can use them together as well as like how do I follow along like how do I participate if I want to know where our do is going where do I go to to be part of it what's the coolest thing you've heard here at the show and you could share story oh the coolest thing I've heard I don't know if I have a moment but it's just been all the conversations and like the fact that there's people flowing through all the time it's like standing room only in the booth because people want to talk there's a lot of action a lot of face-to-face engagement all right I do have a stir so we had um we taught these uh these red hat when she Boston and taught these middle school girls how to make cameras that open the hardware and open-source software has anyone talked to you about this no and so they made these cameras and then we flew a couple of them out here and they taught a group of people here at the events on Monday how to make so these 11 year olds twelve year olds taught them how to make cameras how to open hardware and open-source software and I was out talking to one of them about what was different about teaching it that that was probably my favorite moment it's hard to be teacher when yeah you got em together know the material yeah but that's paying it forward that's the open sore thief ethos yeah that's we're talking about sorry thanks for coming on the cube and sharing good to see you again congratulations on all the success and again the community is buzzing you guys are doing great and exciting so thanks for coming on and sharing appreciate it thanks for having me live cube coverage here in San Francisco for Red Hat summit 2018 I'm John Frusciante for stay with us day 2 coverage continues for three days of coverage after this short break be right back [Music]

I'm joined today by DeLisa Alexander, she is the Chief People Officer here at Red Hat and then, joining us also, are the women in Open Source Technology winners. We have Jigyasa Grover and we also have Avni Khatri. So congratulations. >> Thank you. >> Thank you. >> I'm looking forward to hearing more about why you were bestowed with this honor but I want to start with you, DeLisa. >> DeLisa: Thank you. >> Why this award? Why did Red Hat feel that highlighting women and what they're doing in Open Source was worthy and we needed to showcase these women? >> Red Hat believes this is incredibly important. We all know that there are not nearly enough females in the technology industry and as the Open Source leader, we felt like we had a responsibility to begin to make a difference in that way. >> So tell us about the process. How do you find these women? How do you then winnow it down to who deserves it? >> So it's community based. It's a power of participation. >> So it's the Open Source way. >> It is the Open Source way. So the nominees come in from whomever would like to make a nomination. We do have a panel of judges that narrow down the nominations so there's five of each, the academic and the community And then we put it out to the community to vote. And so the community selects our award winners. >> Great, okay. So let's start with you, Anvi. So you, you're based here in Cambridge. >> Anvi: I am. >> And you were talking about how you had a five year goal. >> Yes. So, I was working at Yahoo! at the time and my boss at that time had asked us to make one year, five year, and 10 year goals. And in my five year plan, I had listed I wanted to set up computer labs for underserved populations. I wanted to travel, I wanted to see other cultures and I wanted to bring technology to other cultures. And I went to this awesome conference, the Grace Hopper Conference for Women in Computing. >> The Cube has a great partnership and long-term partnership with Grace Hooper. >> Awesome, it's a great conference. I was there and I met ... I reconnected with some folks and I was so inspired by all the women that were there and I came back and I was looking at my goals and I was like, why do I have to wait five years to do this? And I looked online and I saw that someone I had reconnected with, Stormy Peters at Grace Hopper, was running Kids on Computers and so I emailed her and the rest is really history. I found one of my passions in life is to bring technology to people who don't have access to it and doing it with Open Source so that it's accessible to everyone who needs it. >> So tell me about some of the stories, some of the kids that you're working with, and how it is, in fact, changing their lives. I just got back Monday night from a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico for Kids on Computers. We were there for a whole week. But we were setting up computer labs for these local rural communities. Most of them don't have internet. Some of them are now starting to get internet but what we do is we take donated equipment and grant money and Red Hat has also been ... Has awarded Kids on Computers a grant for contributing to some of the labs we set up last week. But we set up two new labs, we took donated equipment and we purchased equipment in country and we worked in the small towns of Antequera and Constitución. Those are actually the school names. We worked in the city of ... It's a suburb of Oaxaca City, Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán and working with them is really enlightening. So, some of the teachers have never used a computer before. Some of the kids have but most of them have not. So just seeing them trying to use a mouse, learning how to do single-click, double-click and going from the point where they haven't used it to the point where they have and where the understand it and getting to the point where one kid is teaching another kid is just really ... Just seeing that makes you feel, like, wow. I've actually made an impact and then, hopefully, by providing accessed technology and also providing access to educational content. So the offline content pieces for schools that don't have internet, working with a partner of Kids on Computers, Internet in a Box, providing offline Wikipedia, Khan Academy, MEDLINE content, offline books, that we give them a pathway to bettering their own lives and bettering the lives of their communities. >> That's really incredible and it will be this really big leveling of the playing field. >> Yes, I hope so. I really hope so and I am hopeful that will come to fruition 'cause I think education is one of the most sustainable ways to improve communities and I think Open Source is an avenue to get them there. >> Thank you. Jigyasa, so you are the academic winner. You are still a college student and with this wonderful award so congratulations. >> Jigyasa: Thank you so much. >> I want to talk to you. So you went to an all-girls high school in India and then got to university in New Delhi and weren't very happy with what you saw when you got to university. Can you tell us a little bit more. >> So I told you what was at the end. What I see is ... I am doing my undergraduation in Computer Science and Technology. In my batch, 80% of them are boys and the rest, girls, and not much interested in pursuing a career in technology, as such. They're pursuing different stuff like arts, designing, or even going for civil services back home. So when I came, I wanted to actually pursue a career in technology and do something apart from cataclysm. Not just books, but do something so that I can apply the concepts somewhere. We were just studying different mordents of software engineering but I wanted to be a part of a team, which actually implements it. So Open Source was the only way because I had internet, I had a good internet connection, I had a laptop and lots of free time. So one day I came across Pharaoh. The name itself fascinated me because it reminded me of Egyptian mummies and all. So that's how I actually got into Pharaoh. I've been contributing to it since three years now and also been apart of different world wide programs like Google Summer of Code and to give back to the community which has helped me so much, starting right from scratch. I tried to meet 13 rich developers and budding programmers through programs, like one of them is Learn IT Girl. So it pairs females, both mentors and mentees, worldwide. So not only do you get to know about technology but you can also know about their culture by being a team and knowing about how it works, how are their working styles and temperaments. Also, I wanted to be a part of something local so that I could interact with them physically so I'm the Director for Delhi Network of Women who Code which has more than 400 plus members back in New Delhi and I organize code labs, teach them, or randomly give pep talks sot that they do not feel bogged down and have enough to look forward to. It's been a pretty exciting journey, as I say. >> It's just beginning. >> And this is the thing is that we are bombarded with headlines about how difficult it is for women in the technology industry because it is such a male-dominated industry. There's a lot of sexism, there's a lot of discrimination, a lot of biases where people just don't put women and technology together. You think of a technologist, you think of an engineer, you think of a guy. So how do you think that these awards, DeLisa, are changing things? What are your hopes and dreams for women in this sector? >> Well, we've come so far in terms of the way we think about supporting women just in our conference alone. And so, I think that when we're really, really successful we won't need this award anymore. But we have a long way to go between now and then. Women like these women are just so inspiring and by sharing their stories and showing what women can do future generations of girls, hopefully, will be inspired to join. Men will understand the contributions that women are making today and it will help really generate the next leaders in Open Source that are women. >> Anvi, five years from now, what do you hope? How many labs do you hope to have opened? What's your grand plan? >> So we have 22 labs right now, which is so exciting, in five countries. >> In how long? >> So, we're eight years old. We were a 501(c)(3) in 2009, so super exciting. So my hope is that ... We are currently focusing in Oaxaca and we just formed a partnership with a local university down there to provide support because, as we know, technology is just one piece of the puzzle. We need the community, we need the support, we need the education pieces along with the technology to really fulfill the project. So my hope is that ... At this point, we've kind of figured out how to deploy one lab at a time and my hope is that now we can do this at scale. That we can work with local universities, governments, and actually get .... Reach out to kids who need it because I think Oaxaca has one of the lowest literacy rates in all of Mexico. This is definitely communities where most of the kids do not go on to high school and definitely most do not go on to college. So if we can make an impact, show the measure, like be able to measure the impact that we're making, longitudinally, I think that then we can grow and we can scale. So, very hopeful. But this is my passion, right. So it's going back to as a woman, how do you find your passion. I think, find what you're passion is and go for it and that makes things so much easier. And I think there's a lot of opportunities for growth and look for people that will support efforts that you're doing, like DeLisa. And Jigyasa, she's mentoring girls already. >> And I think that that's also a great point too. This is the Open Source way because it is about community building and it's about collaboration and that is also, you're doing these things ... The software is a metaphor for what you're doing in life. >> [Jigyasa and Anvi] Yes. >> Jigyasa, what's next for you? So first, graduate from college, that would be >> Yes. (laughing) >> A big priority. But then where do you hope to work? >> Actually, I want to learn lots and travel the world, know more about everything. That's what Jigyasa means. So Jigyasa means curiousity in Hindi and Sanskrit so I hope I live up to my name and the next few years, I just want to keep the learning mode switched on, be curious, and if I want to do something, at least I'll give it a try so that I do not regret that I never gave a try. So always be curious, interact, and give a try. >> Do you want to continue working in technology or do you want to come to the States? Where do you see your career path? My career path, it's like I'm trying to balance everything. I want to learn more theoretically about computer science and technology. Maybe do a Master's degree further and then move on to industry. Also, I am pretty excited about the research work. I've done a couple of them in Europe, Asbarez, and Canada so I want to do something which is a mix of everything so that it keeps me going. >> Do you see ... These are really social initiatives that you're both working on. Do you see that as sort of a real future for Open Source innovation and technology? We know that Open Source is helping companies grow, get more customers, make more money, improve their bottom lines, but we also see it having this big impact on global and social progress. I mean, how untapped is this, where are we in this? Open Source is a way, it's not a technology, it's a way. It's a way of doing things and thinking about the world. Transparency, using the best ideas, innovating rapidly. We have a lot of complex problems to solve, now and in the future. Using the Open Source way, we will solve those problems more rapidly. Whether it's a technology issue or something entirely outside of technology. >> I agree with that completely. Open Source is a mechanism by which we can accomplsih not just technical innovations, but also social innovations. We have to look at it wholistically. We have to look at the ecosystem wholistically. It's not just technology, it's also society, it's also community, education and how do all the puzzle pieces fit together. JeLisa, we talked a little bit about the challenges of recruiting and retaining women in this industry. What is Red Hat doing to get the best and the brightest and the most talented women engineers? Well, we've come a long way. We have a long way to go. The first thing we wanted to do is to create an ecosystem within Red Hat that was very welcoming and inclusive because if you are recruiting people and they come in and they have an experience that isn't positive, they're going to go right out the door. So the most important thing was shoring up our community and creating an environment. So we focused on that, really, in the beginning. Then we started thinking about outreach. Now, the problem is so complex to solve, right. So we started realizing there's not enough people to outreach to. So now our next step has been to start to go deeper into the school systems and start partnering, We have a partnership with BU and also the city of Boston where we supported girls coming from middle school into a lab environment and doing some fun stuff, they get introduced to technology and we're going to keep our eyes on them and we'd like to recreate this type of experience in multiple places so really go deeper in to help create an interest at the middle school age with girls. Because that's what we understand that's when we need to get them interested. >> And that's when research shows confidence falls off and women, young girls, start raising their hands less in class. >> And all that stuff. Yeah, it's such a difficult issue but we hope that we will make a difference by reaching into the pipeline and then certainly retaining. We develop our women, we really focus on that. We want to support them as leaders and so it's the whole pathway. >> And Jigyasa, are you finding that your mentorship is making a difference for the young women you're working with? Young girls? >> It certainly is because even after the program ends I receive messages and emails from girls and boys alike about the program or how they want to build their own product. So, I remember one of the girls from Romania. I mentored her during a program sponsored by Google and all she wanted to build was a website for herself and she's very young. So she used to text me about what technologies she should use and how is it shaping up. Can I test it for her? So I really liked that even after the program ended, she kept up her spirit and is still continuing with it. >> And as DeLisa says, now you got to keep an eye on her and make sure she stays with it and everything. Well, DeLisa, Anvi, Jigyasa, thank you so much for joining us.
