Session 8 California’s Role in Supporting America’s Space & Cybersecurity Future

Hello, welcome back to theCUBE virtual coverage with Cal Poly for the Space and Cybersecurity Symposium, a day four and the wrap up session, keynote session with the Lieutenant Governor of California, Eleni Kounalakis. She's here to deliver her keynote speech on the topic of California's role in supporting America's Cybersecurity future. Eleni, take it away. >> Thank you, John, for the introduction. I am Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis. It is an honor to be part of Cal Poly Space and Cybersecurity Symposium. As I speak kind of Pierre with the governor's office of business and economic development is available on the chat, too ready to answer any questions you might have. California and indeed the world are facing significant challenges right now. Every day we are faced with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the economic downturn that is ensued. We have flattened the curve in California and are moving in the right direction but it is clear that we're not out of the woods yet. It is also impossible right now to escape the reality of climate change from the fire sparked by exceptionally rare, dry lightening events to extreme heat waves threatening public health and putting a strain on our electricity grid. We see that climate change is here now. And of course we've been recently confronted with a series of brutal examples of institutionalized racism that have created an awakening among people of all walks of life and compelled us into the streets to march and protest. In the context of all this, we cannot forget that we continue to be faced with other less visible but still very serious challenges. Cybersecurity threats are one of these. We have seen cities, companies and individuals paralyzed by attacks costing time and money and creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and insecurity. Our state agencies, local governments, police departments, utilities, news outlets and private companies from all industries are target. The threats around cybersecurity are serious but not unlike all the challenges we face in California. We have the tools and fortitude to address them. That is why this symposium is so important. Thank you, Cal Poly and all the participants for being here and for the important contributions you bring to this conference. I'd like to also say a few words about California's role in America's future in space. California has been at the forefront of the aerospace industry for more than a century through all the major innovations in aerospace from wooden aircraft, to World War II Bombers, to rockets and Mars rovers. California has played a pivotal role. Today, California is the number one state in total defense spending, defense contract spending and total number of personnel. It is estimated the Aerospace and Defense Industry, provides $168 billion in economic impact to our state. And America's best trained and most experienced aerospace and technology workforce lives here in California. The fact that the aerospace and defense sector, has had a strong history in California is no accident. California has always had strong innovation ecosystem and robust infrastructure that puts many sectors in a position to thrive. Of course, a big part of that infrastructure is a skilled workforce. And at the foundation of a skilled workforce is education. California has the strongest system of public higher education in the world. We're home to 10 university of California campuses, 23 California State university campuses and 116 California Community Colleges. All told nearly 3 million students are enrolled in public higher education. We also have world renowned private universities including the California Institute of Technology and Stanford University numbers one and three in the country for aerospace engineering. California also has four national laboratories and several NASA facilities. California possesses a strong spirit of innovation, risk taking and entrepreneurship. Half of all venture capital funding in the United States, goes to companies here in California. Lastly, but certainly no less critical to our success, California is a diverse state. 27% of all Californians are foreign born, 27% more than one in four of our population of 40 million people are immigrants from another country, Europe central and South America, India, Asia, everywhere. Our rich cultural diversity is our strength and helps drive our economy. As I look to the future of industries like cybersecurity and the growing commercial space industry, I know our state will need to work with those industries to make sure we continue to train our workforce for the demands of an evolving industry. The office of the lieutenant governor has a unique perspective on higher education and workforce development. I'm on the UC Board of Regents, the CSU Board of Trustees. And as of about two weeks ago, the Community Colleges Board of Governors. The office of the lieutenant governor is now the only office that is a member of every governing board, overseeing our public higher education system. Earlier in the symposium, we heard a rich discussion with Undersecretary Stewart Knox from the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency about what the state is doing to meet the needs of space and cybersecurity industries. As he mentioned, there are over 37,000 job vacancies in cybersecurity in our state. We need to address that gap. To do so, I see an important role for public private partnerships. We need input from industry and curriculum development. Some companies like Lockheed Martin, have very productive partnerships with universities and community colleges that train students with skills they need to enter aerospace and cyber industries. That type of collaboration will be key. We also need help from the industry to make sure students know that fields like cybersecurity even exist. People's early career interests are so often shaped by the jobs that members of their family have or what they see in popular culture. With such a young and evolving field like cybersecurity, many students are unaware of the job opportunities. I know for my visits to university campuses that students are hungry for STEM career paths where they see opportunities for good paying jobs. When I spoke with students at UC Merced, many of them were first generation college students who went through community college system before enrolling in a UC and they gravitated to STEM majors. With so many job opportunities available to STEM students, cybersecurity ought to be one that they are aware of and consider. Since this symposium is being hosted by Cal Poly, I wanted to highlight the tremendous work they're doing as leaders in the space and cybersecurity industry. Cal Poly California Cybersecurity Institute, does incredible work bringing together academia, industry and government training the next generation of cyber experts and researching emerging cybersecurity issues. As we heard from the President of Cal Poly, Jeff Armstrong the university is in the perfect location to contribute to a thriving space industry. It's close to Vandenberg Air Force Base and UC Santa Barbara and could be home to the future permanent headquarters of US Space Command. The state is also committed to supporting this space industry in the Central Coast. In July, the State of California, Cal poly US-based force and the others signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a commercial space port at Vandenberg Air Force Base and to develop a master plan to grow the commercial space industry in the region. Governor Newsom has made a commitment to lift up all regions of the state. And this strategy will position the Central Coast to be a global leader in the future of the space industry. I'd like to leave you with a few final thoughts, with everything we're facing. Fires, climate change, pandemic. It is easy to feel overwhelmed but I remain optimistic because I know that the people of the State of California are resilient, persistent, and determined to address our challenges and show a path toward a better future for ourselves and our families. The growth of the space industry and the economic development potential of projects like the Spaceport at Vandenberg Air Force Base, our great example of what we can look forward to. The potential for the commercial space industry to become a $3 trillion industry by mid century, as many experts predict is another. There are so many opportunities, new companies are going to emerge doing things we never could have dreamed of today. As Lieutenant General John Thompson said in the first session, the next few years of space and cyber innovation are not going to be a pony ride at the state fair, they're going to be a rodeo. You guys doing a lot of work, a lot going on in California but cybersecurity and space as it comes together, California's playing a pivotal role in leading the world and the community. Who's the vice president of technology and CIO at Cal Poly but more importantly, he's the director of the cyber institute located at Cal Poly. It's a global organization looking at the intersection of space and cybersecurity. Bill, let's wrap this up. Eleni had a great talk, talking about the future of cybersecurity in America and its future. The role California is playing, Cal Poly is right in the Central Coast. You're in the epicenter of it. We've had a great lineup here. Thanks for coming on. Let's put a capstone on this event. >> Thank you, John. But most importantly, thanks for being a great partner helping us get this to move forward and really changing the dynamic of this conversation. What an amazing time we're at, we had quite an unusual group but it's really kind of the focus and we've moved a lot of space around ourselves. And we've gone from Lieutenant General Thompson and the discussion of the opposition and space force and what things are going on in the future, the importance of cyber in space. And then we went on and moved on to the operations. And we had a private company who builds, we had the DOD, Department Of Defense and their context and NASA and theirs. And then we talked about public private partnerships from President Armstrong, Mr. Bhangu Mahad from the DOD and Mr. Steve Jacques from the National Security Space Association. It's been an amazing conference for one thing, I've heard repeatedly over and over and over, the reference to digital, the reference to cloud, the reference to the need for cybersecurity to be involved and really how important that is to start earlier than just at the employment level. To really go down into the system, the K through 12 and start there. And what an amazing time to be able to start there because we're returning to space in a larger capacity and it's now all around us. And the lieutenant governor really highlighted for us that California is intimately involved and we have to find a way to get our students involved at that same level. >> I want to ask you about this inflection point that was a big theme of this conference and symposium. It was throughout the interviews and throughout the conversations, both on the chat and also kind of on Twitter as well in the social web. Is that this new generation, it wasn't just space and government DOD, all the normal stuff you see, you saw JPL, the Hewlett Foundation, the Defense Innovation Unit, Amazon Web Services, NASA. Then you saw entrepreneurs come in, who were doing some stuff. And so you had this confluence of community. Of course, Cal Poly had participated in space. You guys does some great job, but it's not just the physical face-to-face show up, gets to hear some academic papers. This was a virtual event. We had over 300 organizations attend, different organizations around the world. Being a virtual event you had more range to get more people. This isn't digital. This symposium isn't about Central California anymore. It's global. >> No, it really has gone. >> What really happened to that? >> It's really kind of interesting because at first all of this was word of mouth for this symposium to take place. And it just started growing and growing and the more that we talk to organizations for support, the more we found how interconnected they were on an international scale. So much so that we've decided to take our cyber competition next year and take it globally as well. So if in fact as Major General Shaw said, this is about a multinational support force. Maybe it's time our students started interacting on that level to start with and not have to grow into it as they get older, but do it now and around space and around cybersecurity and around that digital environment and really kind of reduce the digital dividing space. >> Yeah, General Thompson mentioned this, 80 countries with programs. This is like the Olympics for space and we want to have these competitions. So I got great vision and I love that vision, but I know you have the number... Not number, the scores and from the competition this year that happened earlier in the week. Could you share the results of that challenge? >> Yeah, absolutely. We had 83 teams participate this year in the California Cyber Innovation Challenge. And again, it was based around a spacecraft scenario where a spacecraft, a commercial spacecraft was hacked and returned to earth. And the students had to do the forensics on the payload. And then they had to do downstream network analysis, using things like Wireshark and autopsy and other systems. It was a really tough competition. The students had to work hard and we had middle school and high school students participate. We had an intermediate league, new schools who had never done it before or even some who didn't even have STEM programs but were just signing up to really get involved in the experience. And we had our ultimate division which was those who had competed in several times before. And the winner of that competition was North Hollywood. They've been the winning team for four years in a row. Now it's a phenomenal program, they have their hats off to them for competing and winning again. Now what's really cool is not only did they have to show their technical prowess in the game but they also have to then brief and out-brief what they've learned to a panel of judges. And these are not pushovers. These are experts in the field of cybersecurity in space. We even had a couple of goons participating from DefCon and the teams present their findings. So not only are we talking technical, we're talking about presentation skills. The ability to speak and understand. And let me tell you, after reading all of their texts to each other over the weekend adds a whole new language they're using to interact with each other. It's amazing. And they are so more advanced and ready to understand space problems and virtual problems than we are. We have to challenge them even more. >> Well, it sounds like North Hollywood got the franchise. It's likethe Patriots, the Lakers, they've got a dynasty developing down there in North Hollywood. >> Well, what happens when there's a dynasty you have to look for other talent. So next year we're going global and we're going to have multiple states involved in the challenge and we're going to go international. So if North Hollywood pulls it off again next year, it's going to be because they've met the best in the world than defeated >> Okay, the gauntlet has been thrown down, got to take down North Hollywood from winning again next year. We'll be following that. Bill, great to get those results on the cyber challenge we'll keep track and we'll put a plug for it on our site. So we got to get some press on that. My question to you is now as we're going digital, other theme was that they want to hire digital natives into the space force. Okay, the DOD is looking at new skills. This was a big theme throughout the conference not just the commercial partnerships with government which I believe they had kind of put more research and personally, that's my personal opinion. They should be putting in way more research into academic and these environments to get more creative. But the skill sets was a big theme. What's your thoughts on how you saw some of the highlight moments there around skill sets? >> John, it's really interesting 'cause what we've noticed is in the past, everybody thinks skill sets for the engineering students. And it's way beyond that. It's all the students, it's all of them understanding what we call cyber cognizance. Understanding how cybersecurity works whatever career field they choose to be in. Space, there is no facet of supporting space that doesn't need that cyber cognizance. If you're in the back room doing the operations, you're doing the billing, you're doing the contracting. Those are still avenues by which cybersecurity attacks can be successful and disrupt your space mission. The fact that it's international, the connectivities, all of those things means that everyone in that system digitally has to be aware of what's going on around them. That's a whole new thought process. It's a whole new way of addressing a problem and dealing with space. And again it's virtual to everyone. >> That's awesome. Bill, great to have you on. Bret Dennis who's the head of product management with Helio campus. >> Thank you. >> Thanks so much for joining us. >> Go caps, thank you very much, appreciate it. >> Really bringing that [Inaudible] of having won the cup, lots of celebration, and there's a lot of energy here at this show. So we're heading into day two, what's your ... How do you feel about the show so far? >> It's good, it's been good. I did the Edstart program earlier in the week, and we did a sales pitch competition for startup Edtechs, so it's been really exciting, lot's of fun things going on. >> We've loved talking to startups here on theCUBE. I've talked to a number of companies, cyber-security, it's like, "Oh, okay, wait, which agency did you come out of." because of the NSA and the like. You have a similar story coming out of the University of Maryland >> Right. >> Give us a little bit of background on Helio campus. >> So we were spun out in 2016 from the University college. The Maryland board of regents had recognized the value that we'd brought to the University, over about six years of development in terms of the technology platform and the services we were bringing to the University and decided this would be really useful to other Universities, so let's spin it out into a company and go to market, and that's what we've been doing for the last two years. So it's been very exciting. >> Tell me about the product? What does it do? I mean obviously you guys incubate it in the college, so there's equity arrangements, you got a grant. Tell the story about the funding and then now, as you expand, what's that plan look like and how does Amazon fit into the whole mess? >> So we had an initial grant from the board of regions from the state of Maryland, and the idea was to assist colleges and Universities, to help them ask and answer their most pressing questions, but using data, and in order to effectively do that we wanted to bring a full solution that included platform technology as well as a services approach. So we're using Amazon Web Services and the Redshift database and platform to collect data from Universities, and then we have a services team that works with Tableau dashboards to not only help visualize data in meaningful ways, but also to explore how different data sets can be cross-seeded together across the student life cycle. >> Whose the user for you guys? Obviously big data analyst is awesome, we're seeing that clearly as one of those things where it's completely changing businesses >> Sure. And getting these kinds of insights that are actionable and different. Sometimes new questions can be answered. Who's the buyer, who's the user, how is that working? >> So institutional research is a key stakeholder for us. They are traditionally seen as the data owners of Universities and colleges, do most of the research, do most of the numbers crunching, but our idea is that we want to really democratize access to data to enrollment managers, to admissions managers, even to financial managers that want to have their own power to explore and interrogate the data, but do it in such a way that's a very intuitive process, so they don't have to be SQL query writers or really hardcore database developers. We're trying to get to those functional types of users to give the access to data >> So business users basically who don't have to be a data scientist to know Python and wrangle data, you're thinking about more of like turning them into analysts on the fly. >> We want them to be able to ask and answer their own questions without needing the technical skills. Now that's precisely why we bring the services in, so if they decide I really want to use a predictive, algorithmic approach to forecasting, or to admissions modeling, and we have data scientists available to provide that services level on top of the platform. >> Wondering if you might be able to give us an example, either generically, or if you can mention a specific company, just to help illustrate how they're transforming the use of data. >> So we work with the system at the system level for the University of North Carolina. So they had a need where they had done a lot of work on building up base data extracts of their own, but they needed a way to get that data out to campuses in a more effective way using rich visualizations. So we won an RFP with them and were able to help them, not only at the system level, but also at the campuses to make sure that the campuses and the board of regents and the board of governors are getting the data that they need, to again, understand what are my patterns and trends for success. What are specific student populations that we want to help, and we want to use data to help get to those insights. So that's been a real success story for us. >> Talk about the public sector impact of Amazon, obviously Amazon's well known in the startup community, you can spin up a server, that kind of changed the whole provisioning of a data center, now they got large enterprises doing all kinds of stuff, taking databases from big Oracle systems. But public sector, certainly education, we've seen community colleges, all the way up to premier institutions like the University of Maryland, this is now a game changer. So how are you seeing that evolve in other universities? What are your peers doing? What's their mindset? Where are they on the progress bar using cloud, if you will, cloud native, are they thinking microservices, are they thinking about [Inaudible], are they thinking about containers, where are they on the evolution? >> Yeah it is a game changer, and it is because scalability and security are probably two themes that I would bring up. So regardless of the amount of data that you want to use as part of the analysis, there's no limit in terms of using AWS and performance, from a performance perspective, if we want to bring in a new data set, test it, see if there is correlation, see if it's useful in helping answer their key questions, we can do that. But also it goes with out saying, the security, so we don't really have to do a lot of selling in terms of the security of AWS because the level of approvals and the level of certifications at AWS far exceeds beyond what any University could get on their own, or what any vendor individually could do on their own. So that's a natural benefit that comes with a platform. >> What other features or services in AWS are important for what you build, obviously, scalability, security, kind of a given when you talk about AWS. >> The Redshift platform has been really useful to us. The way that we architect our model is that we use Tableau on the front-end for BI, but also any user could have access at the database level and go into Redshift, now we supply security models so that only authorized users can get to that. So it's very helpful to have the security model on top of it, but the Redshift data structure really enables us to provide that experience at any level depending on what the need is of each user. So not many functional users would be going to that level, but Redshift really enables us to have the technical users and the traditional SQL query writers, and the ones that are doing the cross-seeding of the data to have access at that level. >> It's interesting you have a services model built in because it kind of makes sense because one of the benefits of the cloud, obviously, is speed. You get performance, just raw performance, but also speed to value, so you don't have to do a lot of heavy lifting to kind of understand where the value points are. So how does that change the services speed because Amazon's constantly introducing new services, how are you seeing that evolve? Because you can do some heavy lifting, okay here's a data set, is that the way the services are? How is the services changing with cloud? >> So our services model is really to hire individuals from Universities that have the subject matter expertise. So we have x directors of institutional research, x admission officers, so from our perspective we want to leave the technical, the platform, the architecture, the security services to the experts in that realm, that's not what our Universities are asking us for. They want to know how can you bring us subject matter expertise in the functional areas where we're struggling, we want to not have to worry about the technical piece at all. So I think that's where, from a cloud perspective, we're able to rely on the expertise at AWS and Amazon where, again, we're not having to worry about that and we can focus squarely on what the institutional needs are. >> So you're more efficient? >> I think so, yeah. >> You don't spend your time doing a lot wrangling of tech, standing up anything, just pretty much turnkey on the cloud side, focused on getting the users up and running with the tools that you guys have. >> Exactly, and we've had instenses where institutions have asked, "Oh, we want to do this research project, we need additional space." We can turn that up instantly through the value of the services provided through Amazon, which if we were to do that on our own it would be very expensive and a manual process. >> You can actually deliver services that values to the customer. I got to ask you a question, now looking forward, where's the head room? If you look at your business and how it's evolving, what's the head room that you see coming down the road that you're going towards, that you're going to bring to you customer base. >> Right, so with evolving technologies that we all know the buzzwords about, AI and machine learning, sort of taking the data science to the next level. I think that's what eventually we'll be asked to do, is to look at, "Well how can these be brought into education in a meaningful way? How can they provide us insight in ways that we're not doing today, again, more efficiently. We also value time or accelerating time to value, so again, I think right now we're moving data around and we're shifting data, and sometimes it can take a bit of time to do that. I think in the future we'll be able to turn up customers and start delivering that time to value in a much more accelerated way. >> So you said you attended some startup activity here at the show >> Yes. and also seen quite a few Universities here, so it sounds like you're learning to help build your business as well as from the customer standpoint, why don't you give us a little bit of insight as to the value that you get out of a show like this. >> Absolutely. So when the Universities attend we have meetings and we get an understandings of where they are now, what kinds of questions are they having, that's really what we want to get to, analytics is really nothing unless you understand what problem are you trying to solve. So being able to have those meaningful conversations in this type of environment is very helpful to us to understand, again, where are you now, what is your vision for where you want to go, how can we meet that at their point of need. >> What's the low-hanging fruit for these Universities use case wise? What are they using you guys for the most, if you had to look at the patterns? >> It can be arranged, so it can be I am not able to provide my stakeholders meaningful visualizations and insights and have them use data in a more meaningful way. So instead of giving you a table of lines and numbers, I can give you something that's actually actionable. That's really where we start at the dashboard level, the more advanced institutions, and everyone we work with has smart people on their teams but they may have other projects, they may not have time, they may not have the ability to hire expensive data scientists. So from that perspective on the advanced analytic side we can help with that advanced piece with our services team. >> They can get up to speed faster. Sometimes these projects can take months to stand up. >> It is, it's the acceleration that's huge. >> Great, what's the show vibe here? If you had to describe it for the folks that didn't make it. >> Yeah. >> What's the show about this year in your mind? What's the main big story here this year? >> It' a lot like last year for me, it is understanding, and I look at it from a data perspective of course, and it really is all about new technologies, and new vendors, and how we can understand, again, how these technologies can not only make us more efficient from a time perspective and cost perspective, but again, how can we more meaningfully answer the important questions that we have. >> Alright final question. Because you're a startup kind of within a cool environment at the University, which has got a lot of resources and access to some real use case data, what's the biggest thing you've learned over the past few years? Looking at the cloud, you're right in the middle of it, cloud native is super hot, there's people born in the cloud, people migrating the cloud, all kind of different levels of cloudifying businesses, some PurePlay cloud. What is the things that you learn the most? Looking back and saying, "Okay, these are the top three things that we learned." >> So I've worked for a foreign institution as well as for a number of different vendors in this space and I think the theme that I see is I want to go buy technology, "Oh I heard I need predictive analytics, Oh I heard that I need to have machine learning", well that's great that you know that, but have you really refined what your challenges and what you're trying to solve, and that goes for any technology whether it's cloud or a new server or a new application, really need to understand what is that core challenge and that's where we always start. Like any good product manager as we spoke about earlier, you've got to start with what problem you're trying to solve and then apply your solution in a meaningful way. So I think that would be my answer for that. >> Bret, thank for coming on theCUBE, thanks for sharing your story >> Thank you. >>Okay. We're back here, live in New York city for big data week. This is siliconangle.tvs, exclusive coverage of Hadoop world strata plus Hadoop world big event, a big data week. And we just wrote a blog post on siliconangle.com calling this the south by Southwest for data geeks and, and, um, it's my prediction that this is going to turn into a, quite the geek Fest. Uh, obviously the crowd here is enormous packed and an amazing event. And, uh, we're excited. This is siliconangle.com. I'm the founder John ferry. I'm joined by cohost update >>Volante of Wiki bond.org, where people go for free research and peers collaborate to solve problems. And we're here with Jack Norris. Who's the vice president of market marketing at map are a company that we've been tracking for quite some time. Jack, welcome back to the cube. Thank you, Dave. I'm going to hand it to you. You know, we met quite a while ago now. It was well over a year ago and we were pushing at you guys and saying, well, you know, open source and nice look, we're solving problems for customers. We got the right model. We think, you know, this is, this is our strategy. We're sticking to it. Watch what happens. And like I said, I have to hand it to you. You guys are really have some great traction in the market and you're doing what you said. And so congratulations on that. I know you've got a lot more work to do, but >>Yeah, and actually the, the topic of openness is when it's, it's pretty interesting. Um, and, uh, you know, if you look at the different options out there, all of them are combining open source with some proprietary. Uh, now in the case of some distributions, it's very small, like an ODBC driver with a proprietary, um, driver. Um, but I think it represents that that any solution combining to make it more open is, is important. So what we've done is make innovations, but what we've made those innovations we've opened up and provided API. It's like NFS for standard access, like rest, like, uh, ODBC drivers, et cetera. >>So, so it's a spectrum. I mean, actually we were at Oracle open world a few weeks ago and you listen to Larry Ellison, talk about the Oracle public cloud mix of actually a very strong case that it's open. You can move data, it's all Java. So it's all about standards. Yeah. And, uh, yeah, it from an opposite, but it was really all about the business value. That's, that's what the bottom line is. So, uh, we had your CEO, John Schroeder on yesterday. Uh, John and I both were very impressed with, um, essentially what he described as your philosophy of we, we not as a product when we have, we have customers when we announce that product and, um, you know, that's impressive, >>Is that what he was also given some good feedback that startup entrepreneurs out there who are obviously a lot of action going on with the startup community. And he's basically said the same thing, get customers. Yeah. And that's it, that's all and use your tech, but don't be so locked into the tech, get the cutters, understand the needs and then deliver that. So you guys have done great. And, uh, I want to talk about the, the show here. Okay. Because, uh, you guys are, um, have a big booth and big presence here at the show. What, what did you guys are learning? I'll say how's the positioning, how's the new news hitting. Give us a quick update. So, >>Uh, a lot of news, uh, first started, uh, on Tuesday where we announced the M seven edition. And, uh, yeah, I brought a demo here for me, uh, for you all. Uh, because the, the big thing about M seven is what we don't have. So, uh, w we're not demoing Regents servers, we're not demoing compactions, uh, we're not demoing a lot of, uh, manual administration, uh, administrative tasks. So what that really means is that we took this stack. And if you look at HBase HBase today has about half of dupe users, uh, adopting HBase. So it's a lot of momentum in the market, uh, and, you know, use for everything from real-time analytics to kind of lightweight LTP processing. But it's an infrastructure that sits on top of a JVM that stores it's data in the Hadoop distributed file system that sits on a JVM that stores its data in a Linux file system that writes to disk. >>And so a lot of the complexity is that stack. And so as an administrator, you have to worry about how data gets permit, uh, uh, you know, kind of basically written across that. And you've got region servers to keep up, uh, when you're doing kind of rights, you have things called compactions, which increased response time. So it's, uh, it's a complex environment and we've spent quite a bit of time in, in collapsing that infrastructure and with the M seven edition, you've got files and tables together in the same layer writing directly to disc. So there's no region servers, uh, there's no compactions to deal with. There's no pre splitting of tables and trying to do manual merges. It just makes it much, much simpler. >>Let's talk about some of your customers in terms of, um, the profile of these guys are, uh, I'm assuming and correct me if I'm wrong, that you're not selling to the tire kickers. You're selling to the guys who actually have some experience with, with a dupe and have run into some of the limitations and you come in and say, Hey, we can solve some of those problems. Is that, is that, is that right? Can you talk about that a little bit >>Characterization? I think part of it is when you're in the evaluation process and when you first hear about Hadoop, it's kind of like the Gartner hype curve, right. And, uh, you know, this stuff, it does everything. And of course you got data protection, cause you've got things replicated across the cluster. And, uh, of course you've got scalability because you can just add nodes and so forth. Well, once you start using it, you realize that yes, I've got data replicated across the cluster, but if I accidentally delete something or if I've got some corruption that's replicated across the cluster too. So things like snapshots are really important. So you can return to, you know, what was it, five minutes before, uh, you know, performance where you can get the most out of your hardware, um, you know, ease of administration where I can cut this up into, into logical volumes and, and have policies at that whole level instead of at an individual file. >>So there's a, there's a bunch of features that really resonate with users after they've had some experience. And those tend to be our, um, you know, our, our kind of key customers. There's a, there's another phase two, which is when you're testing Hadoop, you're looking at, what's possible with this platform. What, what type of analytics can I do when you go into production? Now, all of a sudden you're looking at how does this fit in with my SLS? How does this fit in with my data protection, uh, policies, you know, how do I integrate with my different data sources? And can I leverage existing code? You know, we had one customer, um, you know, a large kind of a systems integrator for the federal government. They have a million lines of code that they were told to rewrite, to run with other distributions that they could use just out of the box with Matt BARR. >>So, um, let's talk about some of those customers. Can you name some names and get >>Sure. So, um, actually I'll, I'll, I'll talk with, uh, we had a keynote today and, uh, we had this beautiful customer video. They've had to cut because of times it's running in our booth and it's screaming on our website. And I think we've got to, uh, actually some of the bumper here, we kind of inserted. So, um, but I want to shout out to those because they ended up in the cutting room floor running it here. Yeah. So one was Rubicon project and, um, they're, they're an interesting company. They're a real-time advertising platform at auction network. They recently passed a Google in terms of number one ad reach as mentioned by comScore, uh, and a lot of press on that. Um, I particularly liked the headline that mentioned those three companies because it was measured by comScore and comScore's customer to map our customer. And Google's a key partner. >>And, uh, yesterday we announced a world record for the Hadoop pterosaur running on, running on Google. So, um, M seven for Rubicon, it allows them to address and replace different point solutions that were running alongside of Hadoop. And, uh, you know, it simplifies their, their potentially simplifies their architecture because now they have more things done with a single platform, increases performance, simplifies administration. Um, another customer is ancestry.com who, uh, you know, maybe you've seen their ads or heard, uh, some of their radio shots. Um, they're they do a tremendous amount of, of data processing to help family services and genealogy and figure out, you know, family backgrounds. One of the things they do is, is DNA testing. Uh, so for an internet service to do that, advanced technology is pretty impressive. And, uh, you know, you send them it's $99, I believe, and they'll send you a DNA kit spit in the tube, you send it back and then they process that and match and give you insights into your family background. So for them simplifying HBase meant additional performance, so they could do matches faster and really simplified administration. Uh, so, you know, and, and Melinda Graham's words, uh, you know, it's simpler because they're just not there. Those, those components >>Jack, I want to ask you about enterprise grade had duped because, um, um, and then, uh, Ted Dunning, because he was, he was mentioned by Tim SDS on his keynote speech. So, so you have some rockstars stars in the company. I was in his management team. We had your CEO when we've interviewed MC Sri vis and Google IO, and we were on a panel together. So as to know your team solid team, uh, so let's talk about, uh, Ted in a minute, but I want to ask you about the enterprise grade Hadoop conversation. What does that mean now? I mean, obviously you guys were very successful at first. Again, we were skeptics at first, but now your traction and your performance has proven this is a market for that kind of platform. What does that mean now in this, uh, at this event today, as this is evolving as Hadoop ecosystem is not just Hadoop anymore. It's other things. Yeah, >>There's, there's, there's three dimensions to enterprise grade. Um, the first is, is ease of use and ease of use from an administrator standpoint, how easy does it integrate into an existing environment? How easy does it, does it fit into my, my it policies? You know, do you run in a lights out data center? Does the Hadoop distribution fit into that? So that's, that's one whole dimension. Um, a key to that is, is, you know, complete NFS support. So it functions like, uh, you know, like standard storage. Uh, a second dimension is undependability reliability. So it's not just, you know, do you have a checkbox ha feature it's do you have automated stateful fail over? Do you have self healing? Can you handle multiple, uh, failures and, and, you know, automated recovery. So, you know, in a lights out data center, can you actually go there once a week? Uh, and then just, you know, replace drives. And a great example of that is one of our customers had a test cluster with, with Matt BARR. It was a POC went on and did other things. They had a power field, they came back a week later and the cluster was up and running and they hadn't done any manual tasks there. And they were, they were just blown away to the recovery process for the other distributions, a long laundry list of, >>So I've got to ask you, I got to ask you this, the third >>One, what's the third one, third one is performance and performance is, is, you know, kind of Ross' speed. It's also, how do you leverage the infrastructure? Can you take advantage of, of the network infrastructure, multiple Knicks? Can you take advantage of heterogeneous hardware? Can you mix and match for different workloads? And it's really about sharing a cluster for different use cases and, and different users. And there's a lot of features there. It's not just raw >>The existing it infrastructure policies that whole, the whole, what happens when something goes wrong. Can you automate that? And then, >>And it's easy to be dependable, fast, and speed the same thing, making HBase, uh, easy, dependable, fast with themselves. >>So the talk of the show right now, he had the keynote this morning is that map. Our marketing has dropped the big data term and going with data Kozum. Is that true? Is that true? So, Joe, Hellerstein just had a tweet, Joe, um, famous, uh, Cal Berkeley professor, computer science professor now is CEO of a startup. Um, what's the industry trifecta they're doing, and he had a good couple of epic tweets this week. So shout out to Joe Hellerstein, but Joel Hellison's tweet that says map our marketing has decided to drop the term big data and go with data Kozum with a shout out to George Gilder. So I'm kind of like middle intellectual kind of humor. So w w w what's what's your response to that? Is it true? What's happening? What is your, the embargo, the VP of marketing? >>Well, if you look at the big data term, I think, you know, there's a lot of big data washing going on where, um, you know, architectures that have been out there for 30 years or, you know, all about big data. Uh, so I think there's a, uh, there's the need for a more descriptive term. Um, the, the purpose of data Kozum was not to try to coin something or try to, you know, change a big data label. It was just to get people to take a step back and think, and to realize that we are in a massive paradigm shift. And, you know, with a shout out to George Gilder, acknowledging, you know, he recognized what the impact of, of making available compute, uh, meant he recognized with Telekom what bandwidth would mean. And if you look at the combination of we've got all this, this, uh, compute efficiency and bandwidth, now data them is, is basically taking those resources and unleashing it and changing the way we do things. >>And, um, I think, I think one of the ways to look at that is the new things that will be possible. And there's been a lot of focus on, you know, SQL interfaces on top of, of Hadoop, which are important. But I think some of the more interesting use cases are taking this machine J generated data that's being produced very, very rapidly and having automated operational analytics that can respond in a very fast time to change how you do business, either, how you're communicating with customers, um, how you're responding to two different, uh, uh, risk factors in the environment for fraud, et cetera, or, uh, just increasing and improving, um, uh, your response time to kind of cost events. We met earlier called >>Actionable insight. Then he said, assigning intent, you be able to respond. It's interesting that you talk about that George Gilder, cause we like to kind of riff and get into the concept abstract concepts, but he also was very big in supply side economics. And so if you look at the business value conversation, one of things we pointed out, uh, yesterday and this morning, so opening, um, review was, you know, the, the top conversations, insight and analytics, you know, as a killer app right now, the app market has not developed. And that's why we like companies like continuity and what you guys are doing under the hood is being worked on right at many levels, performance units of those three things, but analytics is a no brainer insight, but the other one's business value. So when you look at that kind of data, Kozum, I can see where you're going with that. >>Um, and that's kind of what people want, because it's not so much like I'm Republican because he's Republican George Gilder and he bought American spectator. Everyone knows that. So, so obviously he's a Republican, but politics aside, the business side of what big data is implementing is massive. Now that I guess that's a Republican concept. Um, but not really. I mean, businesses is, is, uh, all parties. So relative to data caused them. I mean, no one talks about e-business anymore. We talking to IBM at the IBM conference and they were saying, Hey, that was a great marketing campaign, but no one says, Hey, uh, you and eat business today. So we think that big data is going to have the same effect, which is, Hey, are you, do you have big data? No, it's just assumed. Yeah. So that's what you're basically trying to establish that it's not just about big. >>Yeah. Let me give you one small example, um, from a business value standpoint and, uh, Ted Dunning, you mentioned Ted earlier, chief application architect, um, and one of the coauthors of, of, uh, the book hoot, which deals with machine learning, uh, he dealt with one of our large financial services, uh, companies, and, uh, you know, one of the techniques on Hadoop is, is clustering, uh, you know, K nearest neighbors, uh, you know, different algorithms. And they looked at a particular process and they sped up that process by 30,000 times. So there's a blog post, uh, that's on our website. You can find out additional information on that. And I, >>There's one >>Point on this one point, but I think, you know, to your point about business value and you know, what does data Kozum really mean? That's an incredible speed up, uh, in terms of, of performance and it changes how companies can react in real time. It changes how they can do pattern recognition. And Google did a really interesting paper called the unreasonable effectiveness of data. And in there they say simple algorithms on big data, on massive amounts of data, beat a complex model every time. And so I think what we'll see is a movement away from data sampling and trying to do an 80 20 to looking at all your data and identifying where are the exceptions that we want to increase because there, you know, revenue exceptions or that we want to address because it's a cost or a fraud. >>Well, that's what I, I would give a shout out to, uh, to the guys that digital reasoning Tim asked he's plugged, uh, Ted. It was idolized him in terms of his work. Obviously his work is awesome, but two, he brought up this concept of understanding gap and he showed an interesting chart in his keynote, which was the date explosion, you know, it's up and, you know, straight up, right. It's massive amount of data, 64% unstructured by his calculation. Then he showed out a flat line called attention. So as data's been exploding over time, going up attention mean user attention is flat with some uptick maybe, but so users and humans, they can't expand their mind fast enough. So machine learning technologies have to bridge that gap. That's analytics, that's insight. >>Yeah. There's a big conversation now going on about more data, better models, people trying to squint through some of the comments that Google made and say, all right, does that mean we just throw out >>The models and data trumps algorithms, data >>Trumps algorithms, but the question I have is do you think, and your customer is talking about, okay, well now they have more data. Can I actually develop better algorithms that are simpler? And is it a virtuous cycle? >>Yeah, it's I, I think, I mean, uh, there are there's, there are a lot of debate here, a lot of information, but I think one of the, one of the interesting things is given that compute cycles, given the, you know, kind of that compute efficiency that we have and given the bandwidth, you can take a model and then iterate very quickly on it and kind of arrive at, at insight. And in the past, it was just that amount of data in that amount of time to process. Okay. That could take you 40 days to get to the point where you can do now in hours. Right. >>Right. So, I mean, the great example is fraud detection, right? So we used the sample six months later, Hey, your credit card might've been hacked. And now it's, you know, you got a phone call, you know, or you can't use your credit card or whatever it is. And so, uh, but there's still a lot of use cases where, you know, whether is an example where modeling and better modeling would be very helpful. Uh, excellent. So, um, so Dana custom, are you planning other marketing initiatives around that? Or is this sort of tongue in cheek fun? Throw it out there. A little red meat into the chum in the waters is, >>You know, what really motivated us was, um, you know, the cubes here talking, you know, for the whole day, what could we possibly do to help give them a topic of conversation? >>Okay. Data cosmos. Now of course, we found that on our proprietary HBase tools, Jack Norris, thanks for coming in. We appreciate your support. You guys have been great.
