with one of dell technologies customers joining me from all the way down under in melbourne australia is kevin pritchard the head of it and business systems from janna investment advisors hi kevin nice to have you on the program thanks lisa a pleasure to be here so tell us about jonah investments who you guys are what you do all the types of data that you're dealing with jana is uh an asset consultant uh we consult to what we call in australia the superannuation industry which is the equivalent of your 401 k our clients are the actual funds themselves the pension funds we advise on both the accumulation and then the pension stage of those to those funds we have under advice across all our clients approximately 500 billion aud so that's a significant responsibility our decisions our research our recommendations probably affects between two to three out of five australians retirement outcomes all right so business critical data kevin i imagine there's compliance requirements not just in australia but if you're doing business with any clients in the americas or in uh europe primarily our markets australia but the regulatory overlays that we and our clients face into are significant and growing the superannuation sector in australia is now at around three trillion dollars it's a significant amount of money i think it's the second or third largest in the world um don't quote me on that but it's a significant amount of money so let's talk about data as a business critical asset and also from a brand reputation perspective talk to me about your it environment how you were managing data before and what some of the challenges were that you wanted to resolve i've been with jana for 14 years and in that time the demands and the complexity of our environment have increased we have to address a growing accumulation of business critical data our data forms our ip it's the core of our advice and it's not just what we're doing today it's what we've done five years ago 10 years ago it has to be there for ready reference it's a critical business asset i like how you said it's really your data is really your ip so talk to me about your it environment before on-prem cloud virtualize what does that landscape look like so we run a a data center we have a it's it's a more economical footprint but nevertheless it's the core of what we do as a business on a day-to-day some data we can't put in the cloud the regulatory overlays really don't permit it and privacy and you know we can better protect in a data center uh we we occupy a space in a dedicated space in a tier 4 data center in australia but that said we are increasingly moving into cloud now the cloud is super important to us it's but it's not easy to migrate into people just say oh let's just go to the cloud you really do have to think about things you have to think about how it's implemented you have to think about data security uh they're very good the cloud providers but it's all care no responsibility it ultimately comes back to you but the the nexus between cloud and on-prem is something that you have to think about and if i'm thinking about backup and dr and i can think of it from a number of perspectives you know it's not just backing up in case we've got failure of hardware but it's about cyber security it's about protection from things like air gapping ensuring um you know that your backups are actually aware of the malware for example uh we've we've had incidents uh and i'm sure the u.s had as well in australia where organizations have found six months down the track that their backups have been compromised we can't afford to do that our regulators our clients i myself have to give assurances to our clients that we're resilient that we're meeting the increasingly stringent benchmarks in your case study i was reading about uh really jonah was on a quest to become more data driven and also it sounded to me like the board was heavily invested and had a vested interest in data protection talk to me about how dell technologies is helping you meet some of those goals becoming more data driven and enabling you to ensure to your cfo et cetera the board that our data is secure yeah as i was saying [Music] at the beginning of this journey i would have thought back up how hard can it be right you you take a backup it's a tape it's a disc you put it into a secure repository something somewhere offside you have a problem you phone someone up they bring it take back and you restore those days have gone and when you really look into it it's a very specialist area how do you back up data especially the size of the data that we have how do you restore it in a timely manner how do you protect it against as i'm saying compromise you need to test it you need easy ways to test it it's complex now when i looked at this problem three years ago i think well okay we're no longer part of a big bank um we've got to stand on our own feet what's the best solution do you research the market um i i've worked with dell for a long time and they're in the mix in the end dell offered the best solution and they showed that they had the understanding of my environment and more broadly where industry is going so that data protection mix of products between the the visibility the dashboards and what happens in the cloud in terms of testing your workloads that are up there because testing is something that my board really really insists upon we have a an annual testing program it runs the full 12 months where we're testing various aspects of uh recovery so talk to me about you're talking about the complexity of a person in the beginning i thought back up in recovery how how difficult can that be you talked about the complexity though and as we talked about with with probably i would say increasing scrutiny from a regulations perspective aboard the cfo how did dell technologies how did power protect actually help you simplify because i actually saw a quote from you in your case study about it being easy help us understand how that was possible yeah you've always got to be careful using the word easy but let's take that perspective from what it would be if it wasn't easy so our prior solution was essentially relying on the dis backup multi-volume disk backup that was stored by a suitable company now i was looking at the dell uh the power protect data protect dashboard the other day and i was surprised we have 27 terabytes of data stored in the cloud which is sent up there daily i get a report card each day it's all green thankfully i can see that on average you know the change the delta of what the data we store on particular servers is on average around seven to ten percent a day those statistics are really important and uh and the deduplication compression ratios you know 97 98 are outstanding um that is really helpful so the point i was trying to make in my previous comments is that visibility is very important that's where it gets easy because i don't have to rely on an expert who's sitting over there he may be in or out telling me what's the status of where we are in day-to-day backup it's it's a critical part of bau it's a pretty critical part of data protection and our clients are greatly comforted by it absolutely when you were describing your previous environment i thought wow one of the things you probably you couldn't have had is complete visibility let alone maybe even good visibility so now with the dell uh power protect series can you look through like a single pane of glass management and see all the backups on file servers virtual machines all of that iep that you talked about that's core to the business uh the short answer is yes now there was another part of our previous setup where we used you what would be classical we had a warm site and we would replicate data one of the problems with that is i didn't know if replication was occurring i didn't know if you know if i if i had had a and we haven't but if we had a ransomware attack then it infects the server and it actually it replicates to your secondary side there was no air gap air gap your backup protected these old solutions of running a you know for an organization outside the the expanding the maintenance required to run a secondary side are just too much one of the things that sounds like you now have is confidence that what you're protecting with dell is in fact protected it's secure and you talked about ransomware a second ago and now in the age of kobe i read the other day that there's a ransomware attack happens every 11 seconds phishing is getting more personal and more sophisticated so that's a big challenge now that sounds like you've got a pretty resilient infrastructure that i i'm going to speak for you gives you the confidence that you're in a pretty good situation with respect to ensuring that that data is indeed safe i have a great deal more confidence and i'm being cautious and cynical i'm you'd never want to say 100. all right because the backup gods will frown upon you but i'm now more confident i can provide my c-suite i can provide the board with a ready snapshot view of where we stand are there any issues um not just cost effectiveness but the visibility of what's going on and look i i was absolutely surprised that an organization outside had 27 terabytes of data that's a lot of data for someone outside and that's important because really at the end of the day this boils down to brand reputation the ability to guarantee to the regulators your clients that all of the data that you talked about it's a lot for a company of your size is indeed secure and protected and that you can as you said you have pretty strong confidence i agree with you saying 100 is always one of those challenging kind of areas to be in but but i think from from a business outcomes perspective this isn't just about protecting the data that's sitting on file servers and virtual machines this is protecting and helping to reinforce the reputation of the brand of janna yes reputation our reputation is so important and we need to ensure to to guarantee to our clients that we stand head and shoulders above i've had funds come to me we we do our uh audits they've come in they've looked at our processes procedures you are miles ahead of us you put us to shame what's your advice to those folks who are coming in saying what you're doing kevin is putting us to shame you say here's how i would advise you to modernize your environment what's your advice well backup is no longer in d i's just look at the bcp and the dr thing it's no longer just about anticipating a hardware failure hub is very reliable but it can still fail network failure malware and malware is increasingly something we have to protect again that your your database is must be insured so you've got to think about it what's the best strategy and that and so you start with those primary objectives standing vms up in the cloud is you know you've got to understand cloud environments so seek good advice really research and and go for the solution that really offers hide the complexity if you can because at least if you guys make sure you can have someone over there that does all the the cloud stuff someone over there that knows all the hardware and then they can all get into a room and we can but most companies now are looking for that single pane of glass and you if you plan right and size your requirements then you you'll be okay in that respect and and it is an endorsement to dell [Music] um implementation phase well they're very good through the through the investigation phase their proposals were very very sound the um the costings the financial benefits were all laid out for me i was able to take a very firm recommendation to my board and we were able to secure that funding and then the implementation kevin that's great advice do do your due diligence and i'm sure now in this very dynamic different world that you're in you're in a much better position than you would have been had this not been able to be moved forward under your leadership we thank you so much VxRail Taking HCI to Extremes, Dell Technologies

launch from Dell technologies updates to the BX rail family we're gonna do things a little bit different here we actually have a launch video from Janet champion of Dell technologies and the way we do things a lot of times is analysts get a little preview or when you're watching things you might have questions on it though rather than me just walking it are you watching herself I actually brought in a couple of Dell technologies expert two of our cube alumni happy to welcome back to the program Jonathan Segal he is the vice president of product marketing and Chad Dunn who's the vice president at price today of product management both of them with Dell technologies gentlemen thanks so much for joining us it was too great to be here all right and so what we're gonna do is we're gonna be rolling the video here I've got a button I'm gonna press Andrew will stop it here and then we'll kind of dig in a little bit go into some questions when we're all done we're actually holding a crowd chat where you will be able to ask your questions talk to the expert and everything and so a little bit different way to do a product announcement hope you enjoy it and with that it's VX rail taking API to the extremes is is the theme we'll see you know how what that means and everything but without any further ado it but let's look fanon take the video away hello and welcome my name is Shannon champion and I'm looking forward to taking you through what's new with the ex rail let's get started we have a lot to talk about our launch covers new announcements addressing use cases across the core edge and cloud and spans both new hardware platforms and options as well as the latest in software innovations so let's jump right in before we talk about our announcements let's talk about where customers are adopting the ex rail today first of all on behalf of the entire Dell technologies and BX Rail teams I want to thank each of our over 8,000 customers big and small in virtually every industry who have chosen the x rail to address a broad range of workloads deploying nearly a hundred thousand nodes to date thank you our promise to you is that we will add new functionality improve serviceability and support new use cases so that we deliver the most value to you whether in the core at the edge or for the cloud in the core the X rail from day one has been a catalyst to accelerate IT transformation many of our customers started here and many will continue to leverage VX rail to simply extend and enhance your VMware environment now we can support even more demanding applications such as in-memory databases like s AP HANA and more AI and ML applications with support for more and more powerful GPUs at the edge video surveillance which also uses GPUs by the way is an example of a popular use case leveraging the X rail alongside external storage and right now we all know the enhanced role that IT is playing and as it relates to VDI the X Rail has always been a great option for that in the cloud it's all about kubernetes and how dell technologies cloud platform which is VCF on the x rail can deliver consistent infrastructure for both traditional and cloud native applications and we're doing that together with VMware the X ray o is the only jointly engineered HCI system built with VMware for VMware environments designed to enhance the native VMware experience this joint engineering with VMware and investments in software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers all right so Shannon talked a bit about you know the important role of IP of course right now with the global pandemic going on it's really you know calling in you know essential things you know putting you know platforms to the test so I'd really love to hear what both of you are hearing from customers also you know VDI of course you know in the early days it was HDI only does VDI now we know there are many solutions but remote work is you know putting that back front and center so John why don't we start with you is you know what you're absolutely so first of all us - thank you I want to do a shout out to our BX real customers around the world it's really been humbling inspiring and just amazing to see the impact of our bx real customers around the world and what they're having on on human progress here you know just for a few examples there are genomics companies that we have running the X rail that have a row about testing at scale we also have research universities out in the Netherlands on doing the antibody detection the US Navy has stood up a hosta floating Hospital >> of course care for those in need so look we are here to help that's been our message to our customers but it's amazing to see how much they're helping society during this so just just a pleasure there but as you mentioned just to hit on the the VDI comments so it's your points do you know HCI and vxr8 EDI that was initially use case years ago and it's been great to see how many of our existing VX real customers have been able to inhibit very quickly leveraging via trail to add and to help bring their remote workforce you know online and support them with your existing VX rail because V it really is flexible it is agile to be able to support those multiple workloads and in addition to that we've also rolled out some new VDI bundles to make it simpler for customers more cost-effective catered to everything from knowledge workers to multimedia workers you name it you know from 250 desktops up to a thousand but again back to your point BX rail ci is well beyond video it had crossed the chasm a couple years ago actually and you know where VDI now is less than a third of the typical workloads any of our customers out there it supports now a range of workloads as you heard from Shannon whether it's video surveillance whether it's general purpose only to mission-critical applications now with SAV ha so you know this is this has changed the game for sure but the range of workloads and the flexibility of yet rail is what's really helping our existing customers from this pandemic we've seen customers really embrace HCI for a number of workloads in their environments from the ones that we serve all knew and loved back in the the initial days of of HCI now the mission-critical things now to cloud native workloads as well and you know sort of the efficiencies that customers are able to get from HCI and specifically VX rail gives them that ability to pivot when these you know shall we say unexpected circumstances arise and I think if that's informing their their decisions and their opinions on what their IT strategies look like as they move forward they want that same level of agility and the ability to react quickly with our overall infrastructure excellent want to get into the announcements what I want my team actually your team gave me access to the CIO from the city of Amarillo so maybe they can dig up that footage talk about how fast they pivoted you know using VX rail to really spin up things fast so let's hear from the announcements first and then definitely want to share that that customer story a little bit later so let's get to the actual news that and it's gonna share okay now what's new I am pleased to announce a number of exciting updates and new platforms to further enable IT modernization across core edge and cloud I will cover each of these announcements in more detail demonstrating how only the X rail can offer the breadth of platform configurations automation orchestration and lifecycle management across a fully integrated hardware and software full stack with consistent simple side operations to address the broadest range of traditional and modern applications I'll start with hybrid cloud and recap what you may have seen in the Dell technologies cloud announcements just a few weeks ago related to VMware cloud foundation on the X rail then I'll cover two brand new VX rail hardware platforms and additional options and finally circle back to talk about the latest enhancements to our VX rail HCI system software capabilities for lifecycle management let's get started with our new cloud offerings based on the ex rail you xrail is the HCI foundation for dell technologies cloud platform bringing automation and financial models similar to public cloud to on-premises environments VMware recently introduced cloud foundation for dotto which is based on vSphere 7 as you likely know by now vSphere 7 was definitely an exciting and highly anticipated release in keeping with our synchronous release commitment we introduced the XR l 7 based on vSphere 7 in late April which was within 30 days of VMware's release two key areas that VMware focused on were embedding containers and kubernetes into vSphere unifying them with virtual machines and the second is improving the work experience for vSphere administrators with vSphere lifecycle manager or VL CM I'll address the second point a bit in terms of how the X rail fits in in a moment for V cf4 with tansu based on vSphere 7 customers now have access to a hybrid cloud platform that supports native kubernetes workloads and management as well as your traditional vm based workloads and this is now available with VCF 4 on the ex rel 7 the X rails tight integration with VMware cloud foundation delivers a simple and direct path not only to the hybrid cloud but also to deliver kubernetes a cloud scale with one complete automated platform the second cloud announcement is also exciting recent VCF for networking advancements have made it easier than ever to get started with hybrid cloud because we're now able to offer a more accessible consolidated architecture and with that Dell technologies cloud platform can now be deployed with a four node configuration lowering the cost of an entry-level hybrid cloud this enables customers to start smaller and grow their cloud deployment over time VCF on the x rail can now be deployed in two different ways for small environments customers can utilize a consolidated architecture which starts with just four nodes since the management and workload domains share resources in this architecture it's ideal for getting started with an entry-level cloud to run general-purpose virtualized workloads with a smaller entry point both in terms of required infrastructure footprint as well as cost but still with a consistent cloud operating model for larger environments we're dedicated resources and role based access control to separate different sets of workloads is usually preferred you can choose to deploy a standard architecture which starts at 8 nodes for independent management and workload domains a standard implementation is ideal for customers running applications that require dedicated workload domains that includes horizon VDI and vSphere with kubernetes all right John there's definitely been a lot of interest in our community around everything that VMware's doing with vSphere 7 understand if you wanted to use the kubernetes piece you know it's it's VCF as that so we you know we've seen the announcements delt partnering there helped us connect that story between you know really the the VMware strategy and how they've talked about cloud and how you know where does the X rail fit in that overall Delta cloud story absolutely so so first of all is through the x-ray of course is integral to the Delta cloud strategy you know it's been VCF on bx r l equals the delta cloud platform and this is our flagship on-prem cloud offering that we've been able to enable operational consistency across any cloud right whether it's on prem in the edge or in a public cloud and we've seen the delta cloud platform embraced by customers for a couple key reasons one is it offers the fastest hybrid cloud deployment in the market and this is really you know thanks to a new subscription on offer that we're now offering out there we're at less than 14 days it can be set up and running and really the deltek cloud does bring a lot of flexibility in terms of consumption models overall comes to the extra secondly I would say is fast and easy upgrades I mean this is this is really this is what VX real brings to the table for all our clothes if you will and it's especially critical in the cloud so the full automation of lifecycle management across the hardware and software stack boss the VMware software stack and in the Dell software however we're supporting that together this enables essentially the third thing which is customers can just relax right they can be rest assured that their infrastructure will be continuously validated and always be in a continuously validated state and this this is the kind of thing that you know those three value propositions together really fit well with with any on print cloud now you take what Shannon just mentioned and the fact that now you can build and run modern applications on the same the x-ray link structure alongside traditional applications this is a game changer yeah it I love you know I remember in the early days that about CI how does that fit in with cloud discussion and align I've used the last couple years this you know modernize the platform then you can modernize the application though as companies are doing their full modernization this plays into what you're talking about all right let's get you know can't let ran and continue get some more before we dig into some more analysis that's good let's talk about new hardware platforms and updates that result in literally thousands of potential new configuration options covering a wide breadth of modern and traditional application needs across a range of the actual use cases first up I am incredibly excited to announce a brand new delhi MCB x rail series the DS series this is a ruggedized durable platform that delivers the full power of the x rail for workloads at the edge in challenging environments or for space constrained areas the X ray LD series offers the same compelling benefits as the rest of the BX rail portfolio with simplicity agility and lifecycle management but in a lightweight short depth at only 20 inches it's a durable form factor that's extremely temperature resilient shock resistant and easily portable it even meets mil spec standards that means you have the full power of lifecycle automation with VX rail HCI system software and 24 by 7 single point of support enabling you to rapidly react to business needs no matter the location or how harsh the conditions so whether you're deploying a data center at a mobile command base running real-time GPS mapping on-the-go or implementing video surveillance in remote areas you can ensure availability integrity and confidence for every workload with the new VX Rail ruggedized D series had would love for you to bring us in a little bit you know that what customer requirement bringing bringing this to market I I remember seeing you know Dell servers ruggedized of course edge you know really important growth to build on what John was talking about clouds so yeah Chad bring us inside what was driving this piece of the offering sure Stu yeah you know having the the hardware platforms that can go out into some of these remote locations is really important and that's being driven by the fact that customers are looking for compute performance and storage out at some of these edges or some of the more exotic locations you know whether that's manufacturing plants oil rigs submarine ships military applications in places that we've never heard of but it's also been extending that operational simplicity of the the sort of way that you're managing your data center that has VX rails you're managing your edges the same way using the same set of tools so you don't need to learn anything else so operational simplicity is is absolutely key here but in those locations you can take a product that's designed for a data center where you're definitely controlling power cooling space and take it to some of these places where you get sand blowing or sub-zero temperatures so we built this D series that was able to go to those extreme locations with extreme heat extreme cold extreme altitude but still offer that operational simplicity if you look at the the resistance that it has to heat it can go from around operates at a 45 degrees Celsius or 113 degrees Fahrenheit range but it can do an excursion up to 55 °c or 131 degrees Fahrenheit for up to eight hours it's also resisted the heats and dust vibration it's very lightweight short depth in fact it's only 20 inches deep this is a smallest form factor obviously that we have in the BX rail family and it's also built to to be able to withstand sudden shocks it's certified it was stand 40 G's of shock and operation of the 15,000 feet of elevation it's pretty high and you know this is this is sort of like where were skydivers go to when they weren't the real real thrill of skydiving where you actually the oxygen to to be a put that out to their milspec certified so mil-std 810g which i keep right beside my bed and read every night and it comes with a VX rail stick hardening package is packaging scripts so that you can auto lock down the rail environment and we've got a few other certifications that are on the roadmap now for for naval chakra quirements EMI and radiation immunity of all that yeah you know it's funny I remember when weights the I first launched it was like oh well everything's going to white boxes and it's going to be you know massive you know no differentiation between everything out there if you look at what you're offering if you look at how public clouds build their things what I call it a few years poor is there's a pure optimization so you need scale you need similarities but you know you need to fit some you know very specific requirements lots of places so interesting stuff yeah certifications you know always keep your teams busy alright let's get back to Shannon we are also introducing three other hardware based editions first a new VX rail eseries model based on were the first time AMD epic processors these single socket 1u nodes offered dual socket performance with CPU options that scale from 8 to 64 cores up to a terabyte of memory and multiple storage options making it an ideal platform for desktop VDI analytics and computer-aided design next the addition of the latest NVIDIA Quadro RT X GPUs brings the most significant advancement in computer graphics in over a decade to professional workflows designers and artists across industries can now expand the boundary of what's possible working with the largest and most complex graphics rendering deep learning and visual computing workloads and Intel obtain DC persistent memory is here and it offers high performance and significantly increase memory capacity with data persistence at an affordable price persistence is a critical feature that maintains data integrity even when power is lost enabling quicker recovery and less downtime with support for Intel obtain DC persistent memory customers can expand in memory intensive workloads and use cases like sa P Hana alright let's finally dig into our HCI system software which is the core differentiation for the xrail regardless of your workload or platform choice our joint engineering with VMware and investments in the x-ray HCI system software innovation together deliver an optimized operational experience at reduced risk for our customers under the covers the xrail offers best-in-class Hardware married with VMware HCI software either vcn or VCF but what makes us different stems from our investments to integrate the two Dell technologies has a dedicated VX rail team of about 400 people to build market sell and support a fully integrated hyper-converged system that team has also developed our unique the X rail HDI system software which is a suite of integrated software elements that extend VMware native capabilities to deliver a seamless automated operational experience that customers cannot find elsewhere the key components of the x rail HDI system software are shown around the arc here that include the X rail manager full stack lifecycle management ecosystem connectors and support I don't have time to get into all the details of these elements today but if you're interested in learning more I encourage you to meet our experts and I will tell you how to do that in a moment I touched on VLC M being a key feature to vSphere seven earlier and I'd like to take the opportunity to expand on that a bit in the context of the xrail lifecycle management the LCM adds valuable automation to the execution of updates for customers but it doesn't eliminate the manual work still needed to define and package the updates and validate all of the components prior to applying them with the X ray all customers have all of these areas addressed automatically on their behalf freeing them to put their time into other important functions for their business customers tell us that lifecycle management continues to be a major source of the maintenance effort they put into their infrastructure and then it tends to lead to overburden IT staff that it can cause disruptions to the business if not managed effectively and that it isn't the most efficient economically Automation of lifecycle management in VX Rail results in the utmost simplicity from a customer experience perspective and offers operational freedom from maintaining infrastructure but as shown here our customers not only realize greater IT team efficiencies they have also reduced downtime with fewer unplanned outages and reduced overall cost of operations with the xrail HCI system software intelligent lifecycle management upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack are automated keeping clusters in continuously validated States while minimizing risks and operational costs how do we ensure continuously validated States Furby xrail the x-ray labs execute an extensive automated repeatable process on every firmware and software upgrade and patch to ensure clusters are in continuously validated states of the customer's choosing across their VX rail environment the VX rail labs are constantly testing analyzing optimising and sequencing all of the components in the upgrade to execute in a single package for the full stack all the while the x rail is backed by Delhi MCS world-class services and support with a single point of contact for both hardware and software IT productivity skyrockets with single-click non-disruptive upgrades of the fully integrated hardware and software stack without the need to do extensive research and testing taking you to the next VX rail version of your choice while always in a continuously validated state you can also confidently execute automated VX rail upgrades no matter what hardware generation or node types are in the cluster they don't have to all be the same and upgrades with VX rail are faster and more efficient with leap frogging simply choose any VX rail version you desire and be assured you will get there in a validated state while seamlessly bypassing any other release in between only the ex rail can do that all right so Chad you know the the lifecycle management piece that Jana was just talking about is you know not the sexiest it's often underappreciated you know there's not only the years of experience but the continuous work you're doing you know reminds me back you know the early V sand deployments versus VX rail jointly develop you know jointly tested between Dell and VMware so you know bring us inside why you know 2020 lifecycle management still you know a very important piece especially in the VL family yeah let's do I think it's sexy but I'm pretty big nerd yes even more the larger the deployments come when you start to look at data centers full of VX rails and all the different hardware software firmware combinations that could exist out there it's really the value that you get out of that VX r l HTI system software that Shannon was talking about and how its optimized around the VMware use case very tightly integrated with each VMware component of course and the intelligence of being able to do all the firmware all of the drivers all of the software altogether tremendous value to our customers but to deliver that we really need to make a fairly large investment so she Anna mentioned we've run about twenty five thousand hours of testing across each major release four patches Express patches that's about seven thousand hours for each of those so obviously there's a lot of parallelism and and we're always developing new test scenarios for each release that we need to build in as we as we introduce new functionality one of the key things that were able to do as Shannon mentioned is to be able to leapfrog releases and get you to that next validated state we've got about 100 engineers just working on creating and executing those test cases on a continuous basis and obviously a huge amount of automation and then when we talk about that investment to execute those tests that's well north of sixty million dollars of investment in our lab in fact we've got just over two thousand VH rail units in our testbed across the u.s. Shanghai China and corn island so a massive amount of testing of each of those those components to make sure that they operate together in a validated state yeah well you know absolutely it's super important not only for the day one but the day two deployments but I think this actually be a great place for us to bring in that customer that Dell gave me access to so we've got the CIO of Amarillo Texas he was an existing VX rail customer and he's going to explain what happened as to how he needed to react really fast to support the work from home initiative as well as you know we get to hear in his words the value of what lifecycle management means though Andrew if we could queue up that that customer segment please it was it's been massive and it's been interesting to see the IT team absorb it you know as we mature and they I think they embrace the ability to be innovative and to work with our departments but this instance really justified why I was driving progress so so fervently why it was so urgent today three years ago we the answer would have been no there would have been we wouldn't have been in a place where we could adapt with it with the x-ray all in place you know in a week we spun up hundreds of instant phones we spawned us a seventy five person call center in a day and a half for our public health we will allow multiple applications for Public Health so they could do remote clinics it's given us the flexibility to be able to to roll out new solutions very quickly and be very adaptive and it's not only been apparent to my team but it's really made an impact on the business and now what I'm seeing is those those are my customers that were a little lagging or a little conservative or understanding the impact of modernizing the way they do business because it makes them adaptable as well all right so rich you talked to a bunch about the the efficiencies that they tie put place how about that that overall just managed you know you talked about how fast you spun up these new VDI instances you need to be able to do things much simpler so you know how does the overall lifecycle management fit into this discussion it makes it so much easier and you know in the in the old environment one it took a lot of man-hours to make change it was it was very disruptive when we did make change this it overburdened I guess that's the word I'm looking for it really over overburdened our staff it cost disruption to business it was it cost-efficient and then you simple things like you know I've worked for multi billion-dollar companies where we had massive QA environments that replicated production simply can't afford that at local government you know having the sort of environment lets me do a scaled-down QA environment and still get the benefit of rolling out non disruptive change as I said earlier it's allow us to take all of those cycles that we were spending on lifecycle management because it's greatly simplified and move those resources and rescale them in in other areas where we can actually have more impact on the business it's hard to be innovated when a hundred percent of your cycles are just keeping the ship afloat all right well you know nothing better than hearing straight from the end-user you know public sector reacting very fast to the Cova 19 and you know you heard him he said if this had hit his before he had run this project he would not have been able to respond so I think everybody out there understands if I didn't actually have access to the latest technology you know it would be much harder all right I'm looking forward to doing the crowd chat and everybody else digging with questions and get follow-up but a little bit more I believe one more announcement he came and got for us though let's roll This is Dave Volante with John furrier. We're here with the cube. The cube is our live mobile studio. We go out to the events, we extract the signal from the noise. Carla Gentry is here otherwise known as at data nerd. Carla, great to see you. Welcome to the cube. You are a data scientists. Do you have your own company? Um, we were just talking to, uh, to dr Ahmed Bouloud from a university in um, Istanbul and he said, well, it's data science. It really, really isn't a such thing as a data scientist. And so he and I are arguing a little about it. So I said, come back and see Carla, right? You're a data scientist, right? >>Well, you know, right out of college I started with a RJ criminal associates up in Chicago. And um, that that's what we all were a bunch of data nerds in there playing around with terabytes of data before anybody even knew what a terabyte one terabyte was really big. Right? Right back when the terabyte was big data, but a, you know, gleaning insight for a discover financial services. And then, you know, I've worked with consumer packaged goods, the education, I mean it's, it's been a wonderful, wonderful career. And what's so great about this is to be able to walk around and see how much data is a part of more people's lives now than it was 20 years ago. I mean, 20 years ago you couldn't have, you know, gotten thousands of people together talking about data analytics. Well, you know, the interesting thing about what you're saying without you, you CPG education, financial services, John and I talk about this a lot, how the data layer is becoming a transport mechanism to connect the dots across different industries and data scientists. >>You guys don't like to get locked into one little industry niche. Do you you'd like to gather data from all types of different sources? Talk about that. Well, that's the thing. Uh, unfortunately, uh, we get bored very easily because, you know, we like to have our fingers in a lot of different pies. But, you know, you wouldn't want to be necessarily siloed with just one kind of information because curiosity makes you think about everything. Education, risk, you know, I'm that way. I have no walls. You know, I can, I can glean insight from any type of data. If you've got a database, uh, we can jump in with both feet. Is data is data and why is the data more transformative today in this day and age, you know, circa 2014 versus say, when you came out of college, why is it that everybody's talking about data that data is able to, to change industries, transform industries. >>What's different? Well, now the, you know, data can actually give you, you know, an insight into your customer mean, you know, what is your customer buying, you know? Um, so when you go to, you know, run a campaign or something like that, you, you're not shooting in the dark. You know, you're actually, you have a face to your customer. So you know, you can make decisions and it's not just marketing, you know, which is what I started out in, you know, trying to do increase and lift, you know, sales. But now you know, you have risk, you have, you know, data breaches. You have, you know, what keeps CEOs up at night, you know, it's not only the cash flow, you know, it's the mitigated risk that's involved. And when you're looking at your, your data and you're collecting this information that gives you a view into what's really going on so you can sleep at night and have a little bit of comfort mostly, >>well not sleeping at night, it's a couple hours of sleep. The notification when I opened CEO's and CIO's, CFO's, chief data officer, you've seen much more formal roles around data where data is real key asset. And this is awesome because it brings to the forefront the role of data. And so I want to get your perspective on this. You brought into the kind of the, kind of the trajectory of where we've come from, um, and talking about the role of software because really what this highlights here at IBM insight is okay, it's not just data per se, you know, how software that's a key part of it. So it's now also an integral part of the platforms. You have a developer angle, you have the data asset, and now you've got this real time in the moment experience. And IBM is talking about engagement a ton here. And so what's your take on all that? I mean it's, it's exciting. Certainly if you're in the data business. >>Well definitely, I mean, real time data, of course it's very expensive. Um, but it's, it's more attainable now than it ever was. Um, the thing is now is you don't necessarily have to be a data scientist to be able to go and get at your data. I mean, thanks to software tools, you know, like IBM, they give you that benchmark, you know, the, these tools, uh, where you can use BI and things like that. To be able to get a view into your business. And you know, it's not just for, you know, your analytical department anymore. Um, so I think it's what it's done is it's actually made it more attainable now. You know, it was like people looked at data wagon back then, Oh, and it was so scary, you know, but now it's, it's bringing it to the forefront to where we can make decisions. We can want our bitter, our business better. And like I joined forces with a repo software years ago to look at the supply chain. Now when you talk about that, that's what keeps the lights on. But you're only as strong as your weakest link. So when you're working with third parties, you have to make sure that everything is going smoothly. So >>I want to get your take on a couple of things in. He chose SA was on earlier and she's an awesome guest. She's been on many times. She's dynamic and articulate and super smart, brilliant and beautiful. We love talking with her. She said, I asked her what are the top three customer issues? And kind of a double edged question. She said three things, customer experience, operational assets, AKA the supply chain, and then risk security and governance. And then we weaved in context computing and then cognitive. So let's break that down. So customer experience, internet of things is a data play, you know, probes and sensors and machines certainly get that >>analogies. People are things. Yeah, well you know, here's the thing that you think about. Data. Data is a person that record that you have in that database equates to a real live person and you want to, you know, you're not going to be friends with your, your customers, but you want to know more about them so that you can serve them better. Um, you know, for me the biggest thing is, you know, people will go out and spend millions of dollars on a database but not necessarily know what to do with it. So it comes down to what question are you trying to answer? >>Yeah. And the infrastructure piece is interesting because you want to have that agile flexibility, which is kind of a buzz word amongst vendors. Hey, be flexible. But there is meaning behind it. Right. So context computing is relationships across entities. The streaming stuff is very, very interesting to me because now you have streaming data coming off of devices and again brings up the real time piece. So making sense of all this means it puts it in the forefront. >>And what you can do with that data is if you do have a client or a customer and you let them link in socially, like log in through Twitter or LinkedIn or Google, Facebook, now you can append that social data. So now you, you've got an ideal, you know sediment and you know when you're positive you it's first party data. Yeah, exactly. The Holy grail of active data is first party data. Exactly. >>Cause we'd love the crowd chatting and love people. The logging in and, and thanks for, by the way, for hosting the crowd chat with Brian the other day. It was really fantastic conversation. My pleasure. Let's talk about cognitive because this brings a human element of it. And one of the things we've been teasing out of the past couple of shows we've been at around big data is the role of the developer where the developers in the old days from even going back to the mainframe days, cold ball, they were adding in these rooms, almost like almost an image of coders in the back room coding away. But now with the customer experience front and center with mobile infrastructure, the developers are getting closer to the customer experience. And so you're seeing more creativity on the developers side with the use of data. Could you share just observation, anecdotes, things you've been involved in that can tease out where this is going and how people should be thinking about it? >>Oh, do you know 20 years ago if he tried to show someone and graft with, you know, 16 different things at one time going on, they were like, that's messy. Now you can actually find the sweet spot or where everything interacts. So you know, when you're talking to an artist, a digital artist who's working with data and giving that picture, that's exciting for me. And going back when we were talking about cognitive computing, when you're talking about the Watson on ecology, that's exciting. Yeah, that's the highlight of it's almost magic. It's almost like black magic, this Watson stuff and people are really just now getting their arms around that and that is essentially making sense of the data, but that's the thing. See, it's no longer magic now. That's what they thought 20 years ago. Poof. People like me, they kept in a little closet, you know, and then our office and they only came to Moses when they needed something. >>Now we're an integral part and we actually are in the business development meetings and we're a liaison between the it department and the C suite. One of the, one of the things that it's interesting about your role as not only you out in the field doing some great work, you're also an influencer here at the IBM influencer program, so I want to get your take on this balance between organic data and kind of structural data. Organic data means free forming unstructured data and then existing data that comes in that's rigid and structured because of business processes. And I get that is data warehousing business has been around for years, right? It's intelligence, it's all fenced in, all structured. But now you have this new inbound data sources coming in, being ingested by these large systems, data changes the data. So you now have a new dynamic where latency, real time insights, these are the new verbs, right? >>So talk about that role, the balance being organic data and the structure data and what the opportunities are. Well, the wonderful thing about, you know, now that unstructured data was scary way back in the day. So now it's not so scary, you know, now we can actually take this data and make business decisions, but uh, you know, like social data and things like that. When you can add that in a pin that and get to, you know, what we all want is a better view of our customer and to be able to, you know, do better business with them. Like, um, like supply chain management and things like that. I mean you're, you're looking at open people, you know, collecting information from varying sources and this all has to be put together. So I think they mentioned earlier this morning how 80% of it is we're data janitors cleaning up this, that and the other. >>Whereas what we really want to do is, you know, glean the insight from it. But I think, uh, the tools these days are making that much more easier no matter what the source is that we can actually put it all together, what we used to call the merge Burj back in the old days. It takes weeks to do the merge purge and yeah, who all here knows what a DLT is trying to solve this problem for a while with traditional technology 17 years. So let's talk about, you know, the, the promise of BI and the traditional data warehouse 360 degree view of my customer, real time information. And that's what it's about. It's about drilling down predictive analytics, all these promises. Did the data warehouse live up to those promises in your view? Well, initially, maybe not, but you know, things are, it just seems in the last few years that people have had an epiphany of how this is really adding value to their company. >>Now back in the old days, they all knew that, you know, insight is wonderful, but now you can see it visibly showing signs actually making a difference in company so they can keep an eye on everything that's going on. Now, going back to what keeps CFOs, you know, up at night with the risk and stuff, there's still always the risk, but at least now you can get a little better handle on it. And thanks to the age of technology and the data that we have accessible to us today and the tools we have available to us today. It's, it's made a dramatic change. What are the technology catalyst? Is it do? Is it no sequel? Is it, what are the, what are the tools that are sort of the foundation of that change? Well, I think always the, you know, the new tools and making it so that you don't have to go out and learn SQL. >>You don't have to be a programmer, you don't have to, you know, go to college for four years and learn mathematics and engineering to actually be able to work with this data. So thanks to, you know, tools like had it been other tools. I mean you can really sit down and glean insight without having to write one single line of code. So the things we're getting some questions in the crowd chats, um, um, at furry, at data nerd, what are the key things that are messy, scary right now for CEOs and CFOs? So things are becoming less scary. What is the scary things right now? Oh, the scary thing is the breaches. You know, when you hear about target and these big names, you know, people getting access to your, your credit card data. That's, that's scary. So, you know, we've got to really try to lock down that risk, you know, and I know everybody's scrambling scratching their head, figuring out how we're going to keep these breaches from happening again. >>Yeah. Big data solves that. I mean you have big data technology, which is a combination of machine learning, streaming where you're getting massive surges of data coming in to these ingest systems where you can apply some reasoning to it, some cognitive, some insights to look for the patterns and that's where machine learning shines. Um, how do you see that aspect of machine learning and these new tools affecting that kind of analysis? Will I see it opening up a lot of different doors for a lot of different people and making a difference because, uh, you know, everybody knows that data is important, but not a lot of people know how to deal with it, especially when it gets into the zettabytes of data. When you have tools, you know, like the IBM tools that can handle this type of load and be able to, to give you, you know, instantaneous information. >>And, and like what we saw this morning where, uh, like risk, I mean an oil and gas industry, you know, you, you have to worry about, you know, as someone going to get injured on the job and they showed the the center, whereas she walked toward it, it went off. I mean the internet of things, being able to let us know in real time if there's a danger, you know, to personal life or to your database and then predictive to be able to say, well this is what we think is going to happen in the future and to be able to move and act on that. It's a very exciting time. You mentioned IBM, so obviously is a leader in here, >>Jeff Kelly's report shows IBM is the number one big data player. But big part of that is IBM. So big, right? >>Well and you guys were around a long, you've been around a long time. You guys were playing with big data way back before. Big data was big data. So yeah, we guys, us guys, yeah, well social, social data, >>those guys, right? So we're not all right, but so, but, but so you bring up IBM, a lot of people have a perception IBM big, hard to work with, but you're, >>but that's changing. So talk about that change. What I'm excited about is the Watson's analytics. I mean that in itself right there and made me sit up and, you know, get excited about the data world all over again. You know, to be able to excite you about Watson analytics platform? Well, I really like, uh, the, uh, the oncology, uh, Watson, um, they had the, the one for the, uh, not necessarily for the police, but for the, uh, the crimes. I mean, in real time, if you can see that a crime is about to happen and you can prevent it, or if you see someone's health is failing and you're able to step in. And that's why over there, earlier I was talking about IBM cognitive abilities can save lives, you know, so I mean, my, my mom passed away from cancer, so, you know, the, the, um, oncology Watson was very exciting to me, but it's gonna make a difference. And I think the thing is now is that how it's changed is to make them user friendly where you don't have to have a data scientist or an analyst to come in. You know, they talk about how expensive data scientists are. Now the reason I opened my business was to make it affordable to small businesses, you know, so although you know, people look at IBM and think it's scary, I think they're going to see now that the, the direction that they're moving is becoming more user friendly and more available. >>So Carla, I wonder if you could talk about how you engage with clients. So you mentioned small business, right? Cause you have a lot of, a lot of businesses, small midsize companies don't have the resources. Right? Um, so where did they start? Did they start with a call to you and, >>well, uh, most of the time it's a call where, you know, we spent all this money on this database and we still can't get what we want out of it. So it comes down to what question are you trying to answer? I think that's the most important thing because that directly deals with what data that you need. And if you don't have it internally, can we get it externally? You know, can we go through open source, can we get census data? Can we get, you know, work with hospitals and doctors and things like that and use this to be able to feed this information into them to make a difference. >>So what do you do? I mean, are you so CEO calls up small companies, is that got all this data? It's unstructured. I get some social data. I get my customer data trying to make sense out of. I'm trying to figure out, you know, who's >>ready to buy, where I should be, you know, focus my products. Uh, and I got all this, this, this date. I don't know what to do with it, but I know there's some gold in there. I know there's a signal in that data mining, right? So how do I get it? How can you help me? Well, it's gap analysis. First off, I would come in and I would sit down and first of all, I need to see what variables you're collecting. Uh, if you're telling me you you're collecting your name, address and phone number, but you want to do a predictive model, we can't get that. So, um, you know, the question that you want to answer is, is most important? Are you wanting to increase your sales? Are you wanting to get your, to know your customers better, to be able to service them better? >>Like in the healthcare industry, you know, you really want to know what's going on health wise, you know, so, uh, I sat down with them when we do a gap analysis, what are you missing? What do you have? How can we get it? What do you want? Where are you at? Yeah. And here's, here's what you have, here's what you're missing. How do we get at that? And that's oftentimes starts with data sources. Exactly. So then you go get the data sources and then more than what you do, well then we merge it back in. And here's the thing, you have to have that way to connect them. You know, the relational databases will always exist to where you have, you know, client information here and you've got other information over here and you have to always bring that back together. So, um, you know, it's a wonderful time. >>You're a data hacker in a sense, right? Is that fair data nerd in a complimentary way? I mean hacking is about exploration. Yeah, exactly right. So I mean, so you have the skillsets as a data scientist to pull all this data together, analyze it and well, you're going to bring in an external source and then when you bring it externally, you want to make sure that you can match it back up. And now that's the important and without a unique quantify or how do you do that? And that's why when you see databases with all these little arrows and everything pointing to where things belong, I mean we have to be able to pull that in to make decisions. >>Yeah. We were talking with frons yesterday to another influencer. We were talking about this particular point. He was ex P and G back in the day, which is very data-driven. Of course, they're well known for their brand work and certainly on the advertising side, but they're, they're quant jocks over there. They love data. Their data nerds over there, they're kicking out on data. And he used to say that the software would cut off data points that were skewing way outside the median. And so they would essentially throw away what are now exploratory points. So this kind of brings up this long tail distribution concept where, okay, you can get the meat of what you want in the head of the tail and distribution, but out into the long tail is all these skew data points that were once skew standard off the standard deviation that are now doorway. So, you know, we're old enough to know that that movie with Jodie foster with contact where they, they find that little white space, they open it up and there's a, a huge puzzle. That's the kind of things that's happening right now. So exactly >>the same thing. Well, yes, yes. I mean, you know, the thing is, uh, you know, a lot of people don't necessarily have the information that they need. So they're seeking it, you know, when they're going to what Avenue, where, where do I go to get this data? You know, and thanks to open source and things like that. You, you know, we've been able to get more information and bring it together than we've ever been able to do before. And I think people now are more open to analysis where it's not necessarily a dirty word. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to go out and spend $300,000 a year to hire a data scientist. You can sit down, you know, and look at what you have and uh, someone else mentioned that. Take the people that you have that know what's going on with your company. You know, they may not be data scientists, they may not be analytical, but they have insights they have. >>There's more of a cultural issue now around playing with data and an experimental sandbox way where you don't need to have the upfront prove the case. And then pre prefabricated systems you can say, I'm going to do some stuff in jest, for instance, bringing in data sources and play with the data. >>Well, and you mentioned, you know, outliners I mean everything when, when you look graphically at data, you expect everything to fall within this little bubble, this, you know, this thing. But when you see, you know, all these outliners going on for me, usually that means a mistake. Okay. So, and if it's not a mistake, it's something that calls attention. So it's definitely not something you just want to toss aside >>talking about creativity because creativity now becomes, you know, uh, uh, an aspect of the job where you gotta be creative, where it's not just being the math geek or being super analytical and you have to kind of think outside the box or outside the query, if you will, to do the exploration. What's the role of creativity in the new model? >>Well before, I think that we always thought of ourself as just being, you know, matter of fact, you know, just the facts please, you know, but now, you know, you can look at things visually and see, you know, and it is an art form to be able to find that sweet spot in the data. And um, you know, before, you know, years and years and years ago when you would take something like that to a CEO, he would say it was messy, you know, so now you get that creative side where you can actually make things visually attractive. And I think that's important to people too because it's not just data, it's the way you present it. >>It's also the mindset of understanding MSCI is a good start, start with messy and then versus getting the perfect answer. As we were saying, using it with pop-up Jana earlier about, don't try it at the home run right away. Hit a few singles. He's in the baseball metaphor given the world series going on. So totally awesome. Um, but I want to get your final thoughts as we wrap up the segment here on the practitioners out there. What's, what should they do? So there's an approach to the job now, right? So there is a shift and inflection point happening at the same time. What advice would you give to folks out there who say, Oh, I love Carla's interview. I want to do that. I just don't know where to start, what to do. How do I convince management I want to be, I want to get going. What do you, what would you share for advice? >>Well, I'm sure it's the platform. I mean, you know, think about the foundation of a house. Now if you have a strong data foundation, you can build on that. It's just like your house. If you have a weak foundation, your house is going to tumble down. So if you have a strong, you have a strong foundation or with your data and everything is built right now. When I say built right means, what are you trying to do? What are you trying to accomplish? You know, if it's risk, then you need to be, you know, looking at those, those factors. You know, how many people have been hurt? How many of you people been injured? You know, how many people died? You know, I mean, how many breaches do we have? You know, so it starts with the question, what is it that you're trying to accomplish? And then you go from there and collect the right variables. So don't wait, you know, a year later and call a data scientist and going, I've spent, you know, millions of dollars on this. I'm still not getting what I want. So think about an initially in the setup and you know, be involved, involved your analyst, involve your data scientists, make sure that they're in your business meetings because we're the liaisons between it and the Csuite. >>Yeah, and that's the key roles team as a team, that person really is collaborative. We heard from a med earlier pair programming pair, not pay eggs in an accent, pair programming, work in pairs, buddy system. This is really a true team effort. >>Well, I always said, you know, I am a team of data. Scientists can write programs, we can glean insight, but the team part has to come from working with it and working with your C suite. So very much agree.
